Conclude Katanga’s case fast so that she can pay the balance for Higer buses, begs seller

HIGER buses general manager Wu Ming sent the Court into fits of laughter when he made an emotional plea that Charity Katanga’s criminal case be speedily disposed off so that she can pay the US$150, 000 owed to the company.

Ming who was testifying before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court told magistrate Davis Chibwili that the former deputy inspector general of police was a big spender as she would pay cash denominated in dollars for the 10 buses supplied to her.

In his testimony, Ming said prior to signing a contract with the ‘Sausage Ma’ composer, she made a down payment and made an effort to dismantle the bill in installments.

He said Katanga paid US$1, 401, 600 cash
and two bank payments worth K3,360,000 for the buses which she purchased to grow her transportation business.

“She’s a very good client, she owes me US$150,000 because of this case. She has to pay me, I hope this case can finish soon because my workers will suffer,” said Ming as he put his hands together in prayer, sending the Court and audience into laughter.

Clement Tembo, a senior Accountant in the Zambia Police Service said Katanga’s monthly income from January 2017 to November 30, 2021 was cumulative to K1.8 million.

“There was a letter written to the police by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) requesting for the emoluments earned by Charity Kantanga between January 2017 until December 2021. Zambia Police has a unit called PMEC ( Payroll Management and Establishment Control) and we (accounts)are able to access payroll information through the system,” said Tembo

“I requested for a printout of the pay-slips for the period under review. The Net pay in January 2017 was K24, 452.71 at the the time she was fired on November 30, 2021 the earnings for housing allowances, sports fund, NHIMA, thrift among other allowance was K 42,557.67.”

In this matter Katanga is accused of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Ramaphosa says his ruling ANC party wants country to quit International Criminal Court

President Cyril Ramaphosa said Tuesday his ruling ANC party had resolved that South Africa should quit the International Criminal Court, which last month issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March meaning Pretoria, due to host the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa bloc summit this year, would have to detain him on arrival.

“Yes, the governing party… has taken that decision that it is prudent that South Africa should pull out of the ICC,” Ramaphosa said during a press conference co-hosted with the visiting President of Finland Sauli Niinisto.

Ramaphosa said the decision, which follows a weekend meeting of the African National Congress (ANC), was reached “largely” because of what is perceived as the court’s unfair treatment of certain countries.

“We would like this matter of unfair treatment to be properly discussed, but in the meantime the governing party has decided once again that there should be a pull out,” he said.

The arrest warrant against Putin followed accusations that the Kremlin unlawfully deported Ukrainian children.

On whether South Africa would arrest Putin, Ramaphosa said “that matter is under consideration”.

But his party’s secretary general Fikile Mbalula earlier declared that “Putin can come anytime in this country”.

“This ICC does not serve the interest of all but the interest of a few,” Mbalula told a separate news conference.

– ‘Needs to be negotiation’ –

Pretoria has close ties with Moscow dating back decades to when the Kremlin supported the ANC’s fight against apartheid.

The continental powerhouse has refused to condemn the invasion of Ukraine which has largely isolated Moscow on the international stage, saying it wants to stay neutral and prefers dialogue to end the war.

South Africa has “adopted this stance of being non-aligned is to ensure that we are able, as a country to play a role in helping conflict to come to an end,” said Ramaphosa.

He said he had spoken to Putin several times and “my message has been clear. There needs to be negotiation”.

It is not the first time South Africa has attempted to withdraw from the ICC.

It made an attempt in 2016 following a dispute a year earlier when then-Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir visited the country for an African Union summit. It refused to arrest him despite the then-leader facing an ICC arrest warrant over alleged war crimes.

The controversial decision to pull out was however revoked when a domestic court ruled such a move would have been unconstitutional.

Earlier this year, it held a controversial joint military exercise with Russia and China, which critics cite as evidence of a tilt towards the Kremlin.

HH must fire himself, not ministers or PSs –LUCKY MULUSA

HH MUST RESIGN-LUCKY MULUSA

HH must fire himself, not ministers or PSs – Mulusa

By Taonga Tembo

Former minister of national planning and development Lucky Mulusa says President Hakainde Hichilema should not fire permanent secretaries or ministers but should instead fire himself.

Recently, governance activist Rueben Lifuka said President Hichilema should not end by reshuffling of Permanent Secretaries because changes were needed at Ministry level as well.

But in an interview, Tuesday, Mulusa said President Hichilema must fire himself because he failed to properly identify people who can help him perform his duties well.

“I am actually very disappointed with my young brother Rueben Lifuka for his sentiments that President Hichilema must fire ministers.

President Hichilema does not need to fire ministers or even permanent secretaries; President Hichilema should fire himself.

He should fire himself because today’s weak culture is that you create things, every leader is given an opportunity to create things after studying the work processes that need to be done and against those work processes, he will do a job fit exercise and that job fit exercise means that you examine work processes that must take place and who fits in to do that job,” he said.

“So, President Hichilema for 18 years, he was doing those exercises according to members of the UPND team, that existed at every stage, so he knew that every election when he was going to take over, there were people he had in mind who he had studied that they would fit in to do that particular task.

So today, if a PS he appointed after going through an analysis of a job fit is not performing, if a minister he appointed after analysing what needed to be done and he identified an individual after a thorough analysis of that individuals’ capabilities, and I am saying thorough analysis passionately because HH is coming from a background of private sector efficiencies, so, if he went wrong in terms of his appointments, then it is not the people he appointed who are wrong, it is he himself who is wrong”.

Mulusa said he would feel very bad to hear that any minister has been fired because it is President Hichilema who needed to be fired.

“Because it’s like you are given a task to be the head of surgery say at UTH and then, as head of surgery, you need to appoint a lead surgeon, then you, you go in Cairo Road and you pick a street boy and appoint him as a lead surgeon.

Then people start dying during surgery, patients start dying. It is wrong for Rueben Lifuka to say fire the lead surgeon who the head of surgery picked from the street in Cairo Road. It means that the person who has the problem is the head surgeon, the one who picked the lead surgeon
from the street,” he said. “So, Rueben Lifuka is wrong, HH must stop firing permanent secretaries, he must stop firing ministers, he must fire himself because he is the one who appointed them.

When did he realise that they were incapable of doing the job? Why did he appoint them? So, I feel sorry for everybody appointed who he is firing. Even ministers, ministers must not be touched for as long as he appointed them. He himself must fire himself because he is incapable of performing a very small task and the task is to identify who can do this job.

So, you cannot rush to say ‘he can’t do the job’ did that person get appointed by somebody else on your behalf or you appointed them? If you appointed them, then you are the one who should be fired. So, HH must fire himself. So,I’llfeelverybad to hear that ministers have been dropped.

No, it is him
who should be dropped”. Mulusa said the Head of State was doing a disservice by failing to explain the exact roles some positions
he had created entailed. “Because Zambians now are suffering. For instance, he is making appointments for people that are not suitable to be in those
positions and then the Zambians, through taxes,
are paying for the welfare of those people he is employing. You see, everything he does, he does it on behalf of Zambians. But then, he wakes up and starts just putting people in positions where they should be earning salaries.

PS special duties, he does not even specify to the Zambians what those special duties entail, how are those special duties benefiting the taxpayer? Is it just packing cadres into positions where they should be rewarded with salaries and vehicles and travel abroad and locally and that kind of stuff?” he asked.

“I mean, is it worth it for the Zambians? What is every job that he is giving people either in the bureaucracy or PS level or at Cabinet level? What is the benefit to the Zambian people? Because those salaries, the cost of those positions can build a clinic for a poor child out there, can improve the status of a community school out there so that a child who is going to a community school in Chiengi or in Shang’ombo or in Mwinilunga is able to be exposed to the same status that a child in Kabwata constituency who is going to a school built by Japan supported corporation has”.

Mulusa said Cabinet ministers had been whipped into a “confused circus” owing to President Hichilema’s leadership of intimidation.

“I am not impressed, the Cabinet ministers, even themselves they’ve been whipped into a confused circus and they have been warned through the style of leadership of HH of intimidation to simply keep quiet and allow the nation to drift along, so the person who should get fired at the moment is HH himself and HH must fire himself,” said Mulusa.

“He should just address the nation and say ‘I’ve resigned, I’ve failed’.

He should stand up and address the nation ‘I’ve resigned, I’ve failed, I am making arrangements for early elections’, so that Zambians can employ a better person than himself.

That’s the solution, he should call for early elections so that Zambians can employ a better President in his
place.”

ABOUT THE NEW DAWN OF BEGGING: A Case Of The “Tipempako Thandizo” Mentality- Sean Tembo

ABOUT THE NEW DAWN OF BEGGING: A CASE OF THE “TIPEMPAKO THANDIZO” MENTALITY

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. There are a lot of things wrong about the UPND administration, which range from economic policy blunders to grand corruption, dereliction of duty, regionalism and tribalism, dishonesty when dealing with the Zambian people, wastefulness of scarce national resources, etcetera. But among all these wrongs, there is one particular mischief which l feel has significantly contributed to the suffering of the Zambian people in the past two years or so that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has been President of the Republic of Zambia. And that is a begging mentality by the President and his Ministers. A false belief that this nation can only develop through handouts and favours from western countries.

2. About two weeks ago, President Hakainde Hichilema made a comment regarding the controversial Gulfstream G650 private jet which struck me as odd. He said he shall never use the famed presidential jet because it is too posh and he would look awkward when he goes to ask for grants (donations) from other countries. This supposedly innocent off-the-cuff statement spoke volumes about the President’s mindset and his idea of bringing development to Zambia. Evidently, his default mentality is not to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), or facilitate partnerships between Zambian and foreign companies or develop foreign markets for Zambian products, no. The President’s default mindset is to beg for donor assistance.

3. About three days ago, the Minister of Finance issued a statement saying that there is a lot of sympathy among IMF officials to release a $188 million disbursement which is part of the bailout loan that we got from the Fund, despite the country not reaching a debt restructuring agreement with it’s creditors. Key word here being “sympathy”!!!

4. For a country that is endowed with so much natural resources, l find it very painful that our stock-in-trade should be sympathy. We have an abundance of arable land, stable climate and fresh water to undertake any agricultural endeavor that we want. We are blessed with huge tourism potential that includes exotic lakes such as Kariba, Mweru, Tanganyika, Bangweulu, well-stocked game parks, central location in the region to be a transport hub, etcetera. We have an abundance of mineral wealth including base metals such as copper, cobalt and manganese as well as precious metals such as gold, silver, emeralds etcetera. And yet, the only thing that President Hakainde Hichilema and his cabinet see fit to offer to the outside world is sympathy? Tipempako thandizo? Tulelombako ubwafwilisho?

5. The thing about trading in sympathy and handouts is that whoever gives you assistance will own you and can make you dance to their tune whenever they feel like. There is nothing for free in this world. While President Hakainde Hichilema might think the IMF are his friends, the same IMF end up compelling him to give tax holidays and also relinquish future dividends in western-based mining companies operating in Zambia such as FQM. You let go of national revenue which this country is entitled to, in favor of handouts which are dependant on the goodwill of others? Mr. President sir, where is the morality in what you are doing? Where is your patriotism to this nation? Better still, where is your common sense sir?

ALCOHOL GIVES ME THE COURAGE TO STEAL, MAN TELLS COURT IN MITIGATION AS COURT JAILS HIM FOR 24 MONTHS

ALCOHOL GIVES ME THE COURAGE TO STEAL, MAN TELLS COURT IN MITIGATION AS COURT JAILS HIM FOR 24 MONTHS

A 36-year-old man caused laughter in a Kaoma court after he told Magistrate, Bestin Hamasiki during mitigation that he gets the courage to steal anything whenever he takes alcohol and that the court should have mercy on him for he did not know what he was doing.

Imasiku Siisi further told the court that he was a double orphan who looks after his old grandmother and a ten-year-old daughter.

Siisi said that sending him to prison would create hell for the persons under his custody.

ZANIS reports that this is in a case in which Siisi was charged with breaking into a building and committing a felony contrary to section 303(a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Facts before the court are that Siisi on 23rd of March 2023 around 23:00 hours did break into a shop at Kaoma’s old market where he got away with assorted clothes and hair weaves worth K36,630.00, property belonging to Sandra Kabanda, a business lady of Kaoma.

Siisi appeared in court and upon his own admission of facts, Magistrate Hamasiki sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour.

During mitigation, Siisi told the court that beer gives him a lot of courage to steal anything he comes across and that he was a double orphan who takes care of his grandmother and his 10-year-old daughter.

“Your honour, I am a double orphan and I take care of my grandmother and my 10-year-old daughter , so if you sentence me to prison these people will suffer, I’m the one that takes care of them. I am failing to understand myself because each time I take beer is when I have courage to steal. Please your honour have mercy on me, I don’t know what makes me behave like that,” he pleaded.

In passing judgment, Magistrate Hamasiki said he had considered Siisi’s mitigation and the fact that he was a first offender and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with hard labour upon his own admission.

U.S. Told to Drop ‘Antiquated’ Sanctions Against Mnangagwa to Access Lithium

0

United States (US) entrepreneur Glenn Jakins says there is an urgent need to give President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration a chance and lift sanctions, paving way for access to the Zimbabwe’s Lithium resource.

Zimbabwe has Africa’s largest lithium resource and ranks fifth globally amid indications that the “white gold” could be the country’s sanctions busting card.

However, trade between Zimbabwe and the US remains limited due to economic sanctions which authorities in Harare continue to blame for unjustifiably slowing down economic progress.

Presenting views through The Geopolitics publication recently, the renewable energy expert questioned the rationale behind keeping the sanctions in force even when they have failed to deliver the intended purpose.

Jakins said the former late President Robert Mugabe who triggered the sour relations between the two regions was forced out of office in 2017, and has since passed away.

“The European Union was invited to send an Election Observation Mission to observe the 2018 elections.

“In 2020, the Zimbabwean government announced a program to compensate the farmers who were ousted from their land back in 2001.

“The new government is not perfect, and many more changes are needed for true democracy and a stable economic position of Zimbabwe. That said, progress is being achieved. The new government has started to do what 20 years of sanctions could not,” he said.

He added that there is also a need for the US and its Western allies to appreciate that the Southern African nation is no longer agriculture dependent as was the case in the last 20 years, underscoring that the country has now uncovered a far more lucrative export of lithium.

Jakins further warned against maintaining the hard-line stance against Mnangagwa arguing that such a situation will only leave a vacuum which competitors like China, Russia and other Eastern Europe nations will exploit.

“So those in the West have to ask themselves, what is the most important goal? To hold on to antiquated sanctions that have done little to advance the cause of human rights, or keep up with the global economy while building bridges with Zimbabwe?”

He underscored that the future is coming fast and if the US is serious about being a leader in the transition to renewable energy it is an undisputed fact that they need access to more lithium which compels them to strengthen ties with Zimbabwe for their companies to invest in mining and refineries.

“Sanctions have failed. Instead of stalling the economy of Zimbabwe by refusing to do business, it is time to try investing in both the people and the resources found there.

“A strong economic partnership with Zimbabwe could hold the key to both influencing the government on human rights issues and addressing the raw material demands of a new, greener global economy,” he added. -New Zimbabwe.

BESTER AND NANDIPHA’S 5-STAR AFFAIR

BESTER AND NANDIPHA’S 5-STAR AFFAIR

Investigations have since revealed that Thabo Bester, while still in prison, using his alias Tom Nkwana with identity number 880613 9546 081, booked a five-star hotel in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, where he was allegedly joined by Magudumana.

On several occasions, Magudumana booked at the same hotel herself and Bester was allegedly driven, by G4S officials, from Bloemfontein to Ballito to join her for a romantic getaway. Investigations have revealed that Magudumana booked the same hotel on:

  • April 12-15, 2021.
  • August 17-20, 2021.
  • March 9-11, 2022.

Bester also booked a room, under his alias Nkwana, at the same hotel from March 9 to 11, 2022. Magudumana also booked two other rooms at the same hotel, one from March 11-13, 2022, and the other from March 12-14, 2022. It is suspected that it was during these days that the final touches for Bester’s escape plan were made.

Days before Bester escaped from prison after faking his death and with the help of his friends from G4S, who brought a corpse to his solitary cell and burned it, Magudumana booked herself at the same hotel for 11 straight days from April 19-30, 2022. On the same day, April 30, 2022, Bester asked to be moved to a solitary cell “for his own safety” after he supposedly failed to pay a prison gang a protection fee.

A prisoner, who was occupying the cell at the time, was forcefully removed to make room for Bester and also forced to cancel his request to be in a solitary cell the same evening. Bester was allegedly moved into cell 35 without proper approval and the cameras pointing to the cell were conveniently not working when he escaped.

The justice and correctional services portfolio committee heard that former G4S security officer Senohe Matsoara, who was the duty supervisor the night Bester escaped, wasn’t even supposed to be at work as he is a permanent day shift employee.

The committee heard how Matsoara arrived at the prison at 4.52pm on April 29, 2022, driving a bakkie with registration number KG97KM GP allegedly hired by Sekeleni from Sani Fleet Management in Boksburg, ferrying a corpse, which was later burnt in Bester’s cell, hidden in a plasma TV stand. He allegedly asked three other officers to carry the “plasma stand” to the workshop storeroom.

Matsoara allegedly removed officials on guard from their strategic positions that night to attend to some sick prisoners. And Bester escaped from prison in the early hours of May 3, 2022, after allegedly paying R5 million to at least 9 G4S officials.

Matsoara sneaked out of prison that morning to escort Bester out. Records of Matsoara’s access card, seen by Sunday Independent, show that he left the facility at 3.45am and returned at 4.05am, just 5 minutes before the cameras started working again.

Magudumana’s father, Zolile Sekeleni, arrived at the prison on May 3, 2022, to collect Bester’s body before G4S could reach any of his next of kin to report him dead. Prison officials refused to hand over the body to him because he wasn’t registered as Bester’s relative.

And the following day, on May 4, 2022, Magudumana arrived at the prison to claim the body, flaunting an affidavit and a statement from her father acknowledging that Bester was his daughter’s customary wedded husband. Magudumana’s affidavit was commissioned in Polokwane, Limpopo, by a police officer who was fired in January 2022, four months before the incident.

After the jailbreak, it is believed that Bester and Magudumana checked themselves into the same hotel in Durban hours after the escape and that the booking was done by one of their friends. Seven days later, on May 10, 2022, Magudumana hired a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, with an offer to purchase it for R1.7 million from a car dealership in Umhlanga not far from the hotel. Bester used the car to skip the country for Zimbabwe the following day, where he was supposed to lie low.

But unfortunately, an incident happened. The car was impounded at Beitbridge border post after its driver, named by a Zimbabwean newspaper as Sicelo Ndlovu, was allegedly caught red-handed removing its South African registration plates from the car and replacing them with Zimbabwean plates and was arrested.

Bester, who was being smuggled through illegal posts on foot to join his driver on the Zimbabwean side as he didn’t have a passport, came face to face with soldiers patrolling the border. One of his smugglers was shot but survived.

They all managed to escape. Sunday Independent understands that Bester stayed in Zimbabwe for a few days and was forced to return to South Africa after Magudumana allegedly failed to pay the Zimbabwean smugglers who were looking after him.

On his return to South Africa, Bester booked himself into the same hotel in Ballito from June 11 to 14, 2022. Bester and Magudumana later rented a R12 million house in Hyde Park, north of Johannesburg, where they were paying R40 000 a month. They had a maid and gardener from Zimbabwe who have since vanished without a trace.

The couple stayed in Hyde Park incognito until the news about Bester’s existence broke and they fled to the same hotel where they hid for a few days. Again the room was booked by one of their friends.

The couple left the hotel in a black SUV minutes before police raided the establishment and skipped the country to Mozambique, where they stayed for a few days before proceeding to Tanzania where they were arrested in the early hours of last Saturday.

Sunday Independent can confirm that Magudumana’s husband, Dr Mkhulesi Magudumana, initiated a divorce after he established that his wife was spending more time with Bester and that she was one of his regular visitors in prison. Dr Mkhulesi Magudumana failed to answer four questions sent to him this week.

CNN fires controversial Black Anchor Don Lemon

Don Lemon announced Monday that he’s been “terminated” by CNN. The embattled anchor, who joined the network in 2006, faced scrutiny over his alleged sexist behavior, surviving numerous on-air blunders during his tenure, like in February when he declared Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley “isn’t in her prime” at age 51.

“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN,” he shared on social media just hours after appearing on-air Monday morning as usual. “I am stunned.”

Lemon added, “After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play. With that said, I want to thank my colleagues and the many teams I have worked with for an incredible run. They are the most talented journalists in the business, and I wish them all the best.”

President HH Must Send Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa Into Diplomatic Service- Isaac Mwanza

0

By Isaac Mwanza

Last week, the nation woke up to a dramatic eviction of the former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa from the house government had been constructing for her and her children who were below the age of 21 when former President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa died.

The property was sold to the University of Lusaka (UNILUS), one of the most reputable universities in Zambia, by two money lenders Esther Chipasi and Osuman Mustapha who had lent Mrs Mwanawasa K1.2 million.

Many on social media claimed the house could not be sold as it was being built for the late former President Mwanawasa as part of his benefits. We find this not entirely true and want to dispel this from the beginning.

According to Section 4A (1) of the Benefits of the Former Presidents Act, a law that provides for benefits of a former President and his family, government is obliged to provide a furnished executive house to a former President who cease to hold office.

Such an executive house is built or bought in Zambia by the State at a place of the former President’s choice.

However, Mwanawasa died in 2008 before government could provide him with such an executive house at his choice thereby triggering sub-section 2 of Section 4A of the Act.

Under subsection 2, government is compelled to provide a furnished house (not an executive house) to the widow and children below the age of 21 of a dead former President, in this case, Maureen and the children.

The house is built or bought by the State at a place of the surviving spouse’s choice. The widow, Maureen, and the children share joint tenancy, meaning upon death of any one of them, the title would pass to other survivors until the last one.

This house built under Section 4A(1) belongs to the estate of a former President while the house built under Section 4A(2) does not belong to the estate of a late former President but to the widow and her children below the age of 21.

In our case, the State had in 2012 assigned land in Chongwe, opposite UNILUS to Maureen Mwanawasa to be jointly owned with her named children, in accordance with Section 4A(2)(b) of the Act.

The property belonged to Maureen Mwanawasa and the children, namely, Chipokota Mayamba, who works at State House, Matolo Levy Mwanawasa, Ntembe Tylanda and Lubona Perise Chikulupanama.

However, statements appearing in the media sound as if Maureen traded in property which she had not right to trade in or that the property did not belong to her but to her late husband, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa. That’s incorrect.

According to the law we have cited here, the property being built by government is her property together with the children. Maureen and the named children could do as they pleased with the property or the house.

They could have subdivided it among themselves or sell part of it to anyone, including government if government had wanted it. They eventually would have walked away with the money as late former President Rupiah Bwezani Banda did.

Maureen is a senior lawyer. She would not have been and was not careless to trade in property for which she had no title or authority from the children with similar life interest in it.

After her unsuccessful bid for the mayoral position in 2016, word has it that Maureen had decided to engage in what appeared to be a low-risk and high-return business.

Even though aware what it is, the author will not discuss the type of business unless she decides to do so herself. Maureen desperately needed money to invest in that business.

In 2017, it is reported that Maureen went to borrow K1.2 million from the named money lenders and pledged the property as collateral on a buy-back basis.

A caveat was put on the title so that no one could have any further business dealings on the property which was subject to a loan. This is a matter of mortgage practice.

Maureen failed to settle the loan. The money lenders grabbed the house but had offered her to buy it back at a much higher price, which was beyond her means. This was a business transaction.

At the height of these financial pressures in May, 2018, Maureen resigned from the UPND and stepped out from politics to concentrate on managing her businesses.

The Daily Nation reported that on 6th July, 2018, her children, who also had life interest in the house, signed a consent letter to sale the Retirement House, giving Maureen permission to transact on the property.

Having failed to pay back the money and on the authority of all the joint owners of the house, the money lenders caused to be removed the caveat on the property between 7 and 10th February, 2023.

The property was sold to University of Lusaka Limited at a consideration amount of US$2.1 million and a certificate of Title No CT_144302 was then obtained.

In our laws, Section 33 of the Lands and Deeds Registry Act makes it clear that a Certificate of Title is conclusive evidence of ownership from the date of issue notwithstanding existence in any other person of any estate or interest except in the case of fraud.

From these facts, it is difficult to fault UNILUS for purchasing the property which belonged to Maureen and her children. UNILUS, in our view, is a bonafide purchaser for value without notice.

What we mean is that UNILUS is a good-faith buyer who could have paid the U$2 million for a property from the money lender without knowledge of existing prior claims or equitable interests.

UNILUS could not have bought the property if they knew Maureen and her children had no ownership which they decided to give up to the seller.

UNILUS could have made the business decision, aware that all children who needed to give consent had given their consent to Maureen to sale the property. UNILUS had interest in the property because of its proximity to their Chongwe learning campus.

UNILUS must decide what next for them, irrespective of the moral judgment the public can make.

At the same time, we as members of the public should stop portraying as if Maureen acted criminally or wanted to make unjust enrichment by trading in property in whom she had no right to trade in. That’s not true.

Maureen must be going through a very difficult phase in life and could have made wrong decisions, which we all do.

Maureen needs our sympathy, a listening ear from friends, and assistance from government on how best to navigate the situation she has found herself in, no matter how embarrassing it could be.

More than ever before, Maureen needs her children who knew what happened to stand with her, defend her action and remove the tag that she acted without authority from the State when the property was theirs and on title, irrespective of fact that government was still constructing the house.

We call on President Hakainde Hichilema to assist the former first lady by sending her into diplomatic service. In that way, she can cope up with current situation and focus on something more constructive away from public criticisms which may have effect on her health.

Tottenham have sacked the caretaker manager in the wake of Sunday’s 6-1 humiliation

0

Tottenham have sacked the caretaker manager, Cristian Stellini, in the wake of Sunday’s 6-1 humiliation at Newcastle and placed his assistant, Ryan Mason, in charge.

The move was confirmed by the chairman, Daniel Levy, who described the result as unacceptable and devastating and said he took ultimate responsibility.

Levy said in a statement: “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.

Ryan Mason will take over head coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.

“I met with the player committee today – the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support.”

Mason, who was passed over for the interim position after the club dismissed Antonio Conte on 26 March, was in caretaker charge for the final weeks of the 2020-21 season after the sacking of José Mourinho, winning four of six Premier League games.

Levy needs to get the next permanent managerial appointment right and he hopes to be able to persuade Julian Nagelsmann to accept the post in the summer.

Nagelsmann, sacked by Bayern Munich on 24 March, pulled out of the running to take over at Chelsea last Friday; the west London club are primed to hire Mauricio Pochettino, a former Spurs manager.

Levy has made no move to go back to Pochettino despite the obvious attraction of him, especially his popularity with the fans, who have sung his name at recent matches. It has led to the feeling that Levy has somebody lined up for the end of the season. Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona and Spain manager, is another option.

The immediate priority is to stabilise after the Newcastle defeat when the team were 5-0 down after 21 minutes, bankrupt on every level. Stellini had started with a new-look 4-3-3 formation which he ditched in the 23rd minute, bringing on a third centre-half, Davinson Sánchez, for the midfielder Pape Sarr. – The Guardian

Lungu shares notes with top Catholic Bishops Banda, Mpundu

Former President Edgar Lungu spent part of today’s afternoon in the company of Catholic Archbishop of Lusaka Dr Alick Banda and Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu.

In a brief interview after the meeting which took place at his residence in Lusaka, Archbishop Dr Banda said he enjoyed the cordial and brotherly meeting which enabled the three leaders to exchange notes on various matters of national and spiritual interest.

Archbishop Dr Banda said he was particularly happy to meet with the Emeritus Archbishop Mpundu to dispel the rumours and innuendos that the church was divided.

“Those who thrive on innuendos and rumours can see that we are one church and one leadership,” he said. “We enjoyed an interchange of views on various issues affecting our nation as you know, church leaders are also national leaders.”

And Archbishop Mpundu described the meeting as being brotherly. He said the church would always stand with, and speak for the voiceless in its mandate to serve the Christian community.

And former President Lungu said he was humbled to be in the midst of “the two holy men.”

“As you know I am in retirement so I came to seek counsel and guidance in my retirement. Lungu said. “I’m just humbled that I am franked by two faithfuls, the two holy men. Last week I enjoyed the company of the Emeritus Archbishop Mpundu and today I’m in the presence of the two holy men.”

Former President Edgar Lungu Launches 2026 Campaigns

Lungu launches 2026 campaigns

FORMER president Edgar Lungu has today launched his 2026 presidential campaigns, with a mini political rally at his rented residence in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill area.

The former president has been pictured with a small crowd which, according to PF aligned-Facebook pages, are Ibex Hill residents who went to complain about the high cost of living to him.

Although he is yet to make a public announcement, Lungu has agreed to return to politics and contest the August 2026 general elections, after his associates convinced him that he would easily win a presidential election.

Back in 2021, after projecting himself as a likely winner of the election, saying he would win by half a million votes, Lungu was handed the mother of all 21st century electoral humiliations – he was rejected by close to three millions voters.

By September 2021, Lungu announced his resignation ad PF president and retirement from active politics.

However, after being convinced by his handlers, Lungu has crawled back to politics and is using every trick in the book to return to the helm of the former ruling party.

For instance, he recently launched a reality show, which insiders are calling ‘Keeping up with Lungu, where during the week, he fetes guests for Facebook likes and over the weekend he takes to the streets to wave at people and pose for pictures, claiming he is keeping fit.

Historian Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, retired Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu and governance activist Brebner Changala have already featured on the keeping up with Lungu reality show.

To keep trending, Lungu even wasted Facebookers’ bundles with an awkward dance that he shared online last week.

It is yet to be known who will be the next guest on the keeping up with Lungu’s reality show

HH is my son in law…I’m the longest detained female under my son in-law’s regime- Mumbi Phiri

0

Former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri says she has broken the record in the Zambian history to
become the first longest female politician to stay long in prison under her son-in-law’s regime ( President Hakainde
Hichilema).

And Mumbi who was recently freed from prison under the Nolle Prosequi says at no time did she breakdown during her over one
year of being in jail facing a murder charge.

She says while in prison, she watched President Hichilema’s press conference saying “even if you are my sister if you go
against the law, you are on your own.”

” I felt like this was directly said to me.

“But the law was broken the time they took me to Mongu under Article 59 of Mandela Rule approved by United States, I was
supposed to be kept near my family, ” she said.

Mumbi despite being related to President Hichilema in marriage, her family never attempted to reach out to him to intervene.
She says her family are Christians who believed in what she told them that God allowed her situation and that it would come
to pass.

President Hichilema is the son-in-law to Mumbi because of his cousin who is married to Mumbi’s biological daughter.

Speaking on Diamond TV COSTA programme recorded from her home which was broadcast Sunday night, 23rd April 2023 monitored by Zambian Eye, Mumbi said her incarceration was politically engineered.

” My incarceration was a revenge from President Hichilema over the treason charge he faced,” she said.

However, Mumbi says, there is no even a single day she broke down in prison even when people who went to visit her broke.

” When Nkandu Luo, Jean Kapata and Sylvia Chalikosa visited me, they broke down into tears but I encouraged them because I knew that my God had allowed this for a purpose and I will eventually come out,” Mumbi said.

The outspoken politician says, she had committed everything to God.

“While in prison, I even prayed for President Hichilema, and people could ask me why I prayed for this government which has
put me through this, I said I hold no grudge against anyone, my God will fight them,” she said.

Mumbi explained that the State had approached a woman called (Ms Bruno) who had a handbag when the shooting was happening to turn her into a state witness to implicate her in exchange for money and a job in foreign service but she turned down the offer.

” I don’t think if the children to Lawrence Banda would be happy when they grow up to hear that their father died with
someone’s handbag in his hands,” Mumbi answered when asked to comment on how she felt on the children left by deceased.

However, Mumbi also said says she never knew her co-accused. She says the only time she met with Shebby Chilekwa was in
court.

” I have never met Chilekwa in person, I didn’t know him,” she said.

Mumbi who calls herself a living Daniel says, she wanted to retire in active politics but her stay in prison made her realize that she has a lot to do for the country especially the women folk.

“I reasised that after what has happened to me women will be scared to participate in politics so I am not retiring yet but I would also like to form a foundation to look into issues of Children and Women in prison, ” Mumbi said.

She says the state when entering a Nolle Prosequi thought that she would not sue them, but the precedence is already there of
suing the state by those who had been freed the same way.

” Our mother, the wife to Chief Mukuni was arrested for 2 weeks, she sued the state and was given money together with her
lawyers, Even HH sued the state but was told he cannot since he is president but his co-accused have been paid. I am going to
sue the state for compensation,” Mumbi said. “My time has been wasted. I’m suing the State Bafwile bampelako ka samufingie.” – Zambian Eye

AMOS CHANDA DIDN’T COMMIT ANY CRIME AT SAROVAR HOTEL SAYS STATE WITNESS

AMOS CHANDA DIDN’T COMMIT ANY CRIME AT SAROVAR HOTEL SAYS STATE WITNESS

(Lusaka, 24 APRIL 2023)— A State witness has told the Lusaka Magistrates Court that Amos Chanda did not commit any crime at Sarovar Hotel on 30 September 2022 as alleged by the DEC.

This is a matter in which DEC prosecutors today moved the Lusaka Magistrates Court to Lusaka’s Sarovar Hotel just for site-seeing of the network of the 120 cameras in the hotel’s control room, poolside and basement carpark.

During cross-examination by defence lawyer Timmy Munalula, during the inspection of the basement carpark where the witness said Amos Chanda parked the car on September 30 last year, Sarovar hotel chief security officer Antony Mtonga (44) told the court that Mr Chanda did not commit any offence at the hotel that day or any other times he has visited the hotel.

Defence lawyers also asked Principal Resident Magistrate Irene Wishimanga to take judicial notice of the arrangement of the tables at poolside where no two tables were connected to each other as stated by DEC senior investigations officer Jones Siansamba.

Lawyers also asked Mtonga to show the court which of the three cameras that were focused on Mr Chanda would show where he sat, but the witness said all the three cameras did not show his full body but only showed a poor image of an unidentifiable person chest downwards.

“No I can’t tell where he sat. I don’t even know which table is number 22 and which one is 24. That is for the waiters to say,” he said.
” You can see him in the camera in the passage but as he got to the poolside terrace, it was dark and the cameras had been adjusted so that they don’t overshoot into Mandal Hill (shopping complex.) As a result all the people on the deck were cut chest downwards and the images were poor,” he said.

When the court court descended to the basement, the chief security officer identified two cameras that the hotel used to zoom on Amos Chanda as he parked.

Asked to state whether in that footage he saw the accused destroying any court document, the witness said Mr Chanda never committed any offence there or indeed anywhere else in the hotel.

In CCTV room, Mtonga said the footage that existed on server was secure and incorruptible before it was deleted 60 days after it was created. But he admitted that the footage he gave DEC was raw and not secured with any password.

The court did not view any footage there because the material DEC wanted the court to see was auto-deleted on 30 December, 2022, the hotel’s chief of security explained.

The court had ruled on Friday, April 21, 2023 that its visit to the hotel was only to view the physical infrastructure and not the footage or any software.

This followed the prosecution’s insistence last that it is important for the court to look at the CCTV hardware although the software, configured into a 60-day auto delete mode, erased the footage DEC claims contained vital evidence.

After looking at the hotel CCTV infrastructure, the Magistrate has ruled that the witness on the stand be cross examined on June 12, the date to which she has adjourned the matter.

Last Friday Mtonga revealed that the hotel has installed 120 CCTV cameras which they use to record videos of guests and surrender footage to third parties if requested.

He said the cameras cover the entire premises of the five-star boutique hotel starting from the basement carparks into the lifts, spa, bar, reception, hallways, restaurants and upto the upper rooms.

Mtonga said three DEC officers led by arresting officer Boyd Munalula ordered him to extract footage and give it to them and that the hotel general manager instructed him to handover any footage from any of the hotel’s rooms of interest to the DEC.

At the opening of the trial on 22 February 2023, DEC senior investigations officer, Jones Siansamba, told the court that he did not investigate anything about the purported missing court record because he was only concerned with the alleged recording he purportedly made on Amos Chanda in a noisy bar at Sarova Hotel .

But Siasamba admitted that he did not have any technical voice analysis report to affirm with certainty that the alleged audio was indeed of Mr Chanda. He claimed he made the recording between 20 and 22 hours in the night.

But on 19 April 2023, an expert state witness from ZICTA told the same court that his analysis of the recoding device the DEC submitted to him for processing showed that the purported recording was done at 02:55 am in the early hours of September 30,2022, long before Mr Chanda arrived at the hotel around 21 hours in the night.

Jeff Sitali, 38, the manager for cyber security and specialist consumer education at ZICTA told the court that he carried out digital forensics and established that the device given to him by the DEC contained recordings done on 30 September 2022 at 02:55:17 am, in the morning and not at 22:00 hrs as stated by Siansamba. He also said he infact did not listen to the audio and so he can’t say the person in the recording was Amos Chanda.

He said he focused on digital forensics to ascertain the integrity of the recording device and not the audios contained therein because he did not have any voice analysis expertise.

Sitali said the court must believe him because his report was an expert analysis pooled and drawn using “incorruptible” operating systems which cannot permit any external insertions into the devices he uses to decode and encode data. He also said he cannot tell the actual source of the recording.

On the same day, another state witness, James Habasimbi, 33, told the court he was just waiter whose job was to serve clients but was instructed by “two outsiders” to implicate Amos Chanda.

He said two people who don’t work for Sarova hotel summoned him to the CCTV room and asked him to identify and mention Amos Chanda as one of the people who sat on a dinner table (24) of interest to them. But Habasimbi presented to court a bill for table 22 where Amos Chanda did not sit that night.

“Me, l am just a waiter and I know nothing about this case before court. All I know is that Mr Amos Chanda is a public figure and he comes to the hotel.”

THE AMAZING STORY OF ZNBC’S PATRICIA ELLIS PUMULO

THE AMAZING STORY OF ZNBC’S PATRICIA ELLIS PUMULO
Allow me to reintroduce Myself!!!
My Name is Patricia Ellis. I am a Journalist, An Actress, A Fitness Enthusiast and Mother.
I was born on the 26 of January 1976, in Luanshya at Thompson Hospital from a British dad named Brian Arthur Dwight Ellis and Bemba Mother Laine Mulenga who is very much alive and resides in Kitwe. My father unfortunately died in 1988 in Luanshya. I come from a family of 13, 9 boys and 4 girls. All of these, 6 are late.

As a child I always dreamt of becoming a broadcaster. From as early as 6 years old I would tell my Dad that one day I will sit on the ZNBC news desk and read the news and My Dad was a strong believer in me so, he always encouraged me to realise that dream no matter the odds.

I started my school in Luanshya at Mpelembe Primary school, grade one to seven from 1982- 1988, then I went to Twashuka secondary school from 1989 to 1990 where I did my grade eight and nine.

Unfortunately, my school was put on hold for eight years due to lack of sponsorship but I picked it up in 1996 and I had to self-sponsor myself by doing odd jobs like waitressing, shop keeping and other jobs. Eventually I started evening classes and I completed my grade 12 at Hellen Kaunda Secondary School in Kitwe in 2001.

My Parents divorced when I was very young, about one-year-old so I grew up with my father in Luanshya. My childhood was a very happy one until my dad died when I was 12 years old in 1988 when I had just written my grade 7 exams and pretty much my life changed there on. I vividly recall how devastated I was by father’s death that this eventually caused me to fail my grade 9 exams.

Despite been out of school for eight years, I was still very determined to be educated and become a broadcaster so I started evening classes and re-wrote my grade nine and passed and did the same for my Grade 12. It was a tough time for me as I had to work to pay for school and sustain myself at the same time but that never discouraged me at all.

My first job was peeling cassava in a factory in Kitwe. I even remember the company’s name after so many years (Nisha Starch Ltd). I later worked as a cashier in a shop and waitress in a restaurant and casino, all these jobs helped pay for my education.

I later moved to Lusaka where I continued to do odd jobs and started studying through correspondence with an institute in the UK (Institute of Commercial Management) for my Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies, again as I could not be in college full time because I still had to work to pay for my education.

Eventually I completed my Diploma and in my last semester I was recruited as a News caster at 5 FM radio after auditions in 2002. And that was the beginning of my broadcasting career.

I worked for 5 FM for three and a half years as a reporter and news caster and on the 20th of November 2006, I made my lifelong dream that I had toiled for by joining ZNBC as a part time announcer.

I worked as a part time announcer for three and a half years and was finally employed on a full time basis on the 1st of May 2010 as a producer to date.

I vividly remember my first day working as a television broadcaster at ZNBC was a nerve wrecking experience especially coming from a background of reading news for radio.

On radio, you are not mindful of your looks and facial expressions but for TV you become aware of your outlook, your make-up, hair and clothes and facial expressions and all. And especially that you are reading for an audience countrywide you become aware that there are so many eyes on you, it is a totally scary experience. It’s still is, but the more I have done it over the years it has become easy and fun.
Being a being broadcaster is fulfilling for me, being that one person that delivers the most anticipated message to the public, it kinda makes you feel important, when I sit on the news desk and broadcast to the entire nation, it’s the one time I get people’s attention (chuckles) it’s an awesome experience. And also getting to meet different people from different walks of life is something I love about my job. Travelling both locally and internationally is something I love so much. I could actually live out of a suit case.

Growing up I was inspired by Maureen Nkandu and now CNN’s Isha Sesay. It’s every journalist’s dream to work for an international television news channel like CNN or the BBC and Isha has just done that.

The most challenging moment of my career was trying to get to prove that I was capable of casting the main news on ZNBC TV. As it was not easy to make it on the main news desk. One day a news caster missed the news and I took the opportunity and was able to present the main news and has been casting since.

I had two careers choices when I young, most prominent was as a broadcaster and the other as an actress and I always told myself that if I didn’t make it as a broadcaster, I would be an actress. I guess I have had a taste of both after all lol.

I acted in Kabanana as the new Amina, in Tears of love and recently had a small part in love Games as well Tikula. Since I have a busy schedule I rarely do auditions but I love acting. On a daily basis, my day starts at 05 hrs, I hit the gym, then head for work.
My hobbies include swimming, reading romantic novels and memoirs, dancing (though am terrible at dancing lol! I believe in never looking down on anyone as you can learn something from people regardless of their standing in society. I have also realised that you can never control people’s opinion about you so as a public figure, I have learnt to block out the negative and focus on the positive.
I am a mother of three Children namely, Natassja aged 29 and two boys Brian and Michael both aged 16. I one day intend to set up my own Film production company and to open up my own fitness gym.

Aside from casting main news On TV1 and Presenting on TV2’s Number television breakfast Morning Live, I am currently producer and presenter of a women’s show called Woman 360 on TV2 and am working on a Fitness Show called SWEAT IT OUT starting soon on TV2.
I am very passionate about fitness and this will be a perfect platform to share knowledge on fitness as well encourage people to live healthy lifestyles through exercise by demonstrating to them how it is done, so look out for that. I am currently running a Facebook page called Patricia Ellis Fitness, where I take along people on my fitness journey.

In 2019, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication science from University of South Africa.
I would like to encourage anyone with a dream to go for it whether big or small, and never let anyone stand in the way of your dream, it is never too late to live your dream. I am a living example of someone who was out of school for eight years however my dream was too big to ignore.

I call myself the late bloomer but here I am finally living my dream as a broadcaster and more.
So go for your dream.. anything is possible as long you have life in you

Rapper Desiigner Charged For Allegedly Exposing Himself, Masturbating On Plane

0

Desiigner is facing legal trouble following a bizarre incident on a plane.

The “Panda” rapper has been charged with indecent exposure after he allegedly exposed himself and masturbated in front of flight attendants while returning from a flight overseas.

According to legal documents, obtained by TMZ, Desiigner had his penis out while sitting in first class of the Delta flight and was masturbating in his seat.

Flight attendants allegedly told him to stop multiple times and he was taken to the back of the plane before being monitored by two of his friends. A jar of Vaseline dropped into the aisle as he was getting up to change seats, the FBI affidavit reveals.

Desiigner was interviewed by police when his plane arrived in Minneapolis. He told them it all happened because he “didn’t really get much … cootie” while in Japan, and was “brick hard” when he got on the plane.

Desiigner claimed he was aroused by the flight attendant and showed her the “magic stick” thinking it would give her “encouragement.”

He didn’t appear to be impaired during his interview with the FBI. He had been prescribed medication in Thailand, but hadn’t been taking it.

After the incident, Desiigner released a statement, saying that he has been struggling with mental health issues and has decided to check himself into a facility for treatment.

“For the past few months I have not been OK, and I have been struggling to come to terms with what is going on,” he wrote. “While overseas for a concert I performed at, I had to be admitted in to a hospital, I was not thinking clearly. They gave me meds, and I had to hop on a plane home.”

He continued, “I am ashamed of my actions that happened on that plane. I landed back to the States, and am admitting myself in a facility to help me.”

He asked his fans for their support while he gets help. “I will be cancelling all of my shows and any obligations until further notice. Mental health is real guys, please pray for me. If you’re not feeling like yourself please get help.”

Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa Opens In Gaborone

0

With over 600 young brand ambassadors and/or business leaders expected to be part of the four-day event, the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa kicked off in Botswana’s economic and political capital, Gaborone, on April, 23.

Thousands gathered in Botswana’s capital Gaborone yesterday, April 23, in the historic Main Mall and square, for the pan-African opening of the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa, held for a second year in the southern Africa city.

The four-day event kicked off with celebrations at the outdoor shopping and commercial hub as summit delegates and members of the public swayed to live on-stage music featuring energetic performances from some of Africa’s finest musical talent including Sauti Sol, Stabito, local Botswana artist Dato Seiko and one of the country’s rising stars, ATI.

South African Grammy award-winner Nomcebo Zikode also enthralled the audience with her foot-tapping music and viral smash single, Jerusalema.

The eager crowds gathered outside the Cresta President Hotel, known as a legacy hotel, overlooking the main stage.

“I am thrilled to be attending the 2023 summit,” said Muhle Ndwalane, the Managing Director of Asante Tech Solutions and FORBES AFRICA’s 2022 Under-30 lister. “This is one incredible platform that brings together some of the brightest minds and most innovative leaders from across the world.”

“With this being the first day of the summit, we have really been having fun,” said FORBES AFRICA’s 2021 Under-30 lister, filmmaker and creative director, Ifan Ifeanyi Michael, during the festivities.

“Apart from it being fun, it’s actually such a good networking experience for me. Meeting people from all parts of the continent, and all over the world; sharing business ideas, and also connecting with individuals who are also very optimistic about changing the narrative of Africa.”

Throughout the summit, attendees are looking forward to riveting conversations with change-makers from Africa and across the globe including the continent’s youngest billionaire Mohammed Dewji and Grammy award-winning artist Davido (who is also set to perform at the Bush Party), but part of the “fun” will be hearing from some of the past listers as well continuing the African growth story.

“This year I’m at the summit to speak on the topic of securing equitable funding, with fellow FORBES AFRICA listers Shaun Shoriwa and Charlot Magayi,” said Dr Brett Lyndall Singh, 2022 Under 30 list-maker, and founder and CEO of AOM GrouP.

“Last year, I came to the summit as an excited delegate, eager to learn from successful young entrepreneurs, and I ended up meeting a fellow lister, who became my co-founder! This year, I’m here to hear more! This summit is the most important event for any serious young entrepreneur, and I’m excited to share, learn and support this wonderful community.”

Held under the theme Entrepreneurial Africa—with Botswana at the Center, the summit will start day two with a talk with several African leaders and elite entrepreneurs, at the Botswana Innovation Hub. [forbesafrica.com]

The Value of Big African Companies Led by Female CEOs Outperform Benchmarks

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 24 April , 2023 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- While only 5% of companies listed on Africa’s 24 stock exchanges have a woman as CEO, those that do have a woman CEO outperform financially by a wide measure according to a new analysis by Africa.com.

To mark the evolution of Africa.com’s Definitive List of Women CEOs, sponsored by Standard Bank Group, now in its third year, Africa.com analyzed 2,020 listed companies on Africa’s 24 stock exchanges to compare the performance of companies where women hold the top position as CEO. Women led companies remain a rarity across Africa in spite of a growing body of evidence that more diverse management produces better results.

“Despite difficult market conditions in most sectors and most geographies across the continent, in 2022, female run companies in Africa outperformed most benchmarks,” said Teresa Clarke, Chair of Africa.com, the company that conducted the analysis.

Transcorp of Nigeria, a diversified conglomerate with investments in the power, hospitality and energy sectors run by President and CEO Ms. Owen Omogiafo, ranked as one of the top performers on the Africa.com list gaining 8.27% in share price in 2022. She joined us on the 19th to talk about how Transnational Corp. was able to outperform its competitors in this environment.

Another top performer was Bidvest Group of South Africa, a diversified industrial services company which has been run by chief executive Ms. Mpumi Madisa since 2020, saw its share price increase by 5.82% in 2022.

To put the figures into perspective, the share prices of the collective group of 93 women led companies analyzed by Africa.com outperformed the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (FTSE/JSE All Share) by 506 basis points, the Nairobi Securities Exchange Index (NSEASI) by 2,712 basis points, the London Stock Exchange (FTSE All Share Index) by 1,202 basis points, and the S&P 500 by 1,714 basis points.

Vera Songwe, Senior Fellow – Global Economy and Development, Africa Growth Initiative joined the virtual event on April 19th for the unveiling of the Definitive List of Women CEOs to share her perspective on why women outperform in the investment arena.

The trend of large, listed, women-led companies in Africa outperforming their male-run counterparts is consistent with trends seen in other parts of the world. Why do women-led firms often outperform? Patricia Lizarraga of Hypatia Capital wrote, “According to McKinsey, women face well-documented additional barriers in today’s workplace. The few who rise to the highest executive ranks, by definition, must possess additional leadership and performance characteristics versus the average executive, predominantly male, who did not face the same barriers.”

Hypatia Capital of New York designed the Hypatia Women CEO Index, measures the performance of publicly traded securities on U.S. exchanges that have female Chief Executive Officers. Over the same period, 6678 January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022, that index outperformed its benchmark by 479 basis points. Patricia Lizarraga, CEO of the Hypatia Womens CEO Index Fund in the US talked more about the “Female Factor,” her term for how women impact investment performance.

One of the caveats to the Africa.com analysis is that the various exchanges on which the companies are listed report share prices in their local currencies. Thus, in order to achieve the results indicated, an investor would have to purchase shares in the currencies of each regional exchange.

Teresa Clarke, Chair of Africa.com, said, “This work represents one of the first analyses of the performance of publicly listed companies in Africa conducted through a gender lens. We look forward to advancing this work in the years to come.”

For more information, please visit TheDefinitiveList.africa.com

Methodology:

Africa.com analyzed 2,020 companies listed on the 24 African stock exchanges. Of the 2,020 companies, Africa.com screened for those companies with revenue of $100 million or more, or a market cap of $150 million or more, which yielded a list of 787 companies. This data was provided by Bloomberg. The public websites of the 787 companies were then reviewed by Africa.com to identify female C-suite executives. The team of Africa.com researchers then examined the list of these women to determine those who have a title of chief executive officer or managing director or president AND conducted a review to confirm that these executives have bottom line, profit and loss responsibility for the companies. Two additional groups of women were selected through this process above, to identify division heads of African corporates and regional heads of global corporations. This resulted in the final Definitive List of 93 women CEOs. The Africa.com researchers then used the data to evaluate the change between the last closing share price at January 1, 2022 compared to December 31, 2022, to determine overall performance.

Joe Biden campaign team set to finalize plans for reelection

0

President Joe Biden‘s advisers are working quickly to finish personnel and operational elements of his reelection campaign before what is predicted to be a tough 19-month battle to persuade the public of his accomplishments and his potential to serve deep into his 80s.

After spending the previous weekend at Camp David, according to people with knowledge of the issue, Biden returned to the White House late on Sunday to thoroughly test-run the campaign and personnel preparations, including any decisions that still required his final approval.

But even as officials made final edits to an announcement video likely to be released Tuesday, marking four years since Biden declared himself a candidate in the 2020 presidential election, the challenges of the upcoming contest were coming into sharper view.

An NBC News poll released Sunday found just 26% of Americans think Biden should run for a second term as president, while 70% say he should not. Among Democrats, 51% say Biden should not run for a second term. That mirrors the findings of other recent polls showing tepid support for a Biden reelection bid, including an AP-NORC poll released Friday and CNN polling released earlier this month.

In the NBC poll, nearly half of those who oppose a Biden run say that his age is a major reason for that view.

Advisers are confident those numbers will mean little in the long run. Republicans – and former President Donald Trump’s candidacy in particular – have “a pretty good track record of bringing our people back home – and out to vote,” one senior Democratic official close to the White House said.

Biden’s advisers also believe his age represents decades of experience, which they say has driven legislative wins delivering tangible economic dividends across the country.

“He is a steady hand, when you look at what’s out there right now with Donald Trump and what we’re hearing again. People don’t want that chaos back again,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, when asked by CNN’s Dana Bash about Biden’s age on “State of the Union.”

Still, at 80, Biden’s age is certain to act as a central issue in the coming campaign, a fact even many of his Democratic allies privately acknowledge.

News that Biden had decided to launch his reelection campaign this week came as a surprise to a slew of Democratic officials who had been led to believe in recent weeks that Biden was more likely to wait until the summer to announce his bid.

For weeks, Biden advisers and others close to the White House had insisted the president felt no pressure to announce this spring and was keen to allow an increasingly contentious Republican primary to play out without being in the mix as an official candidate.

But other factors also weighed on Biden’s advisers. A messy debt ceiling fight, anticipated this summer, would not be the ideal time to announce a reelection campaign. The president will travel abroad next month for summits in Japan and Australia, and he plans to travel overseas again in July for a NATO summit in Lithuania, squeezing the calendar.

And high-dollar fundraising tends to be slower during the summer months, which could affect Democratic officials’ desire to deliver a strong first quarter haul for the reelection campaign.

Advisers continued to caution that last-minute changes were possible. And while Biden has finished taping a video declaring his candidacy and outlining his argument for a second term, according to people familiar with the matter, aides warned the timing of its release could shift.

As planning for the reelection launch came into public view in recent days, the number of candidates for campaign manager rapidly narrowed from more than a half-dozen to one name.

Biden is poised to name Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a senior White House adviser, to oversee the campaign, two senior Democratic advisers told CNN on Sunday. The choice of campaign chief was among the many outstanding decisions Biden and his team were making as they prepare for the potentially imminent announcement.

Rodriguez, a senior adviser to the president and director of the White House’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, has seen her star rise in Biden’s White House.

Biden elevated Rodriguez to the role of senior adviser last summer, adding her to the small circle of his senior-most aides.

While Rodriguez will formally manage the campaign, the effort will also be largely guided from the West Wing, where top aides Anita Dunn, Jen O’Malley Dillon, Mike Donilon and Steve Ricchetti will also play central roles.

Rodriguez, the granddaughter of labor icon Cesar Chavez, has been a longtime Democratic adviser who is close to Biden.

CBS News was first to report the expected decision.

Biden’s final weekend before the expected announcement served as a window into the balancing act to come as he and his top national security officials navigated the complexity of a potentially perilous evacuation of government personnel from the US embassy in war-ravaged Sudan.

Biden has maintained privately that his primary focus is on carrying the duties of the job he was elected to do in 2020.

He gave the order on Saturday to deploy roughly 100 US special operations troops to secure and complete the evacuation of US personnel in Sudan. The operation was successful and no US military and diplomatic personnel were harmed in the roughly hour-long process.

It served as a real-time demonstration of how the next 19 months may unfold for the incumbent running for the White House, where there are no shortage of crises that can turn a message or campaign on its head seemingly overnight.

It also provided a window into another Biden reality, people familiar with the matter said. He will have the ultimate say in the direction of things, even if that say takes longer than some in the party would prefer. That drove some on Biden’s team to warn allies that the Tuesday announcement wasn’t locked in until Biden gave the green light.

The video had been filmed, they noted, and close advisers had accelerated their communications with party officials and donors in the lead up to the announcement. But Biden wasn’t pleased by leaks – and still had much to mull over and discuss about the shape of his nascent campaign over the course of the weekend.

President Mnangagwa warns disloyal Zanu-PF MPs

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned both losing and winning candidates from just-ended Zanu-PF primary elections against being disloyal to the party and his leadership, vowing unspecified consequences.

Speaking at Mubaira business centre last Thursday, President Mnangagwa said party members bent on fomenting disunity within would face his wrath.

Prior to issuing the ominous warning, the Zanu-PF leader had summoned both defeated and victorious Zanu-PF primary election candidates upfront, where he chastised them in public.

These included losers, Zvimba South Member of Parliament (MP) Phillip Chiyangwa, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka (Hurungwe West), Cecil Kashiri (Magunje), Dexter Nduna (Chegutu West), among others.

On the winners’ pack, most recognisable was Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi’s nemesis Mercy Maruva-Dinha of Zvimba West, and incoming Mhondoro-Mubaira legislator, Chamu Chiwanza, who waltzed to victory after incumbent MP Freddy Kapuya opted not to contest.

“We recently held primary elections and all these people, those who lost and those that won, belong to Zanu-PF,” said Mnangagwa.

“I want to warn the old and new MPs, particularly the incoming ones that you will assume the yoke of responsibility to lead the people after taking over from losing candidates. You must remain Zanu-PF to the core.”Anyone who displays the spirit of Legion, particularly those just coming in, l will crush you ruthlessly. New MPs must know that Zanu-PF came a long way.

“When you carry the yoke of leading our people, remember that you are not the ones that started carrying the yoke … Zanu-PF doesn’t belong to you.”

The Zanu-PF first secretary and president took the opportunity to preach peace.

“I take opportunity of this event to call upon communities in promoting and preserving peace, harmony, tranquility, unity and love.

“Before, during and after harmonised general elections violence has no place. Violence must be rejected by every single Zimbabwean…”

Meanwhile, Zanu-PF has since started reconciliation and healing meetings to ease strained relations among its members in the aftermath of primaries.

In Manicaland, various gatherings presided over by Zanu-PF Politburo members have been convened to unite warring parties.

Mutare District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman, Binali Yard, called the indabas with all 23 DCC executive members, primary election candidates and district or ward chairpersons of all four wings that include Main Wing, Women’s League, Youth League and war veterans.

Why Ethiopians Feast On Raw Meat Wholeheartedly

0

Ethiopia is full of culinary surprises. Come to think about it. How does fresh raw meat taste?

While many do not comprehend how this is possible, eating raw meat in Ethiopia is a thing. Mutton, beef makes up the popular dish.

It is part of their national heritage embraced and loved beyond human comprehension. Interestingly, there is a history behind it all, coupled with their innate friendly nature.

For first-timers visiting Ethiopia, it is intriguing when you find people dining on raw meat. However, the intrigues don’t last long because they welcome you, explain the tradition behind it all and offer you a “taste trial”.

It is hard when you are not used to it. It takes some time to get used to the idea of feasting on uncooked meat. But, it tastes different, especially with pepper sauce by the side.

So, What’s Behind Eating Raw Meat In Ethiopia?
Walking into a butchery in Ethiopia – meat selling spots are known as butcheries in Africa – you find groups of people enjoying their meal. The meat points sell fresh lamb, sheep, and bull meat. It is upon you to order what you feel is right for you.

The serving comes straight from the butcher. It is indifferent quantities; a kilogram or more. Sometimes, people will order half a kilo. It all depends on the budget you have and how many people you are.

Nonetheless, the raw fresh meat serving comes in a circular metallic tray with a sauce bowl for dipping. It gives more flavor to the meat. The sauce has spicy flavors to rock your taste buds. Each tray comes with knives to chop it into fine pieces as you enjoy your meal.

When Is Raw Meat Eaten In Ethiopia?
Every day is a meat-eating day in Ethiopia. Saturday and Sunday are the peak days for raw meat-eating in Ethiopia. Wednesday and Friday are fasting days; no one eats raw meat. Also, during some traditional holidays, raw meat is off bounds. But, such holidays are just a few in a year.

What Is The History Behind Ethiopia’s Raw Meat?
Interestingly, raw meat-eating in Ethiopia dates back to 3000 years back. History has it that Ethiopians started eating raw meat to evade colonization by Italians who invaded their land thousands of centuries ago.

They couldn’t cook the meat because lighting fire to prepare it could blow their cover against their enemies – Italians. Thus, they took it raw.

The traditions are deeply rooted in the communities and carry a sentimental value for Ethiopians. It is a sign of honor for the ancestors, and the culture is passed from one generation to another.

How Much Does Raw Meat Cost In Ethiopia?

A raw meat dish is one of the most expensive dishes in Addis Ababa. It is served with Ethiopia’s signature food Injera. Injera is specially prepared with wheat flour and an Ethiopian touch making it an authentically Ethiopian dish. Across Addis Ababa, you will find it as an accompaniment.

You Still Can Enjoy Cooked Meat
Although raw meat-eating is popular, you still can enjoy a dish of well-cooked beef or mutton christened ‘chocolate tips.’ Another surprise shocks you.

A mini-clay oven is placed on the table with a clay pot on it. Beneath, hot charcoal cooks the meat slowly and keeps it hot throughout as you enjoy the meal. The spices used in preparing it are as tasty as Ethiopian cuisine.

Science cites that eating raw meat is harmful to the body. You are likely to suffer from Brucellosis. However, Ethiopians say this is not the case. For them, raw meat is a healthy option.- seeafricatoday

Lawyer accused of killing own child, suffered mental and physical abuse as a child

By Correspondent Reporter

THE Lusaka High Court has heard how a Lusaka lawyer Namweene Kamoto Phiri, who is accused of poisoning her son tried to commit suicide, after the child had drowned in the bathtub.

Esther Phiri testified that her sister, Namweene, decided to take a pesticide called Doom after she failed to resuscitate her son.

In this matter, Phiri on February 15, 2022 is alleged to have killed her two-year -old son by administering a pesticide to him and later consumed the same in an attempt to commit suicide.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

When the matter came up for defence last week on Friday, an emotional Phiri described her sister as a loving mother who loved and took good care of her son, Eden.

“She told me that her baby had drowned in the bathtub and when she noticed that, she got him and tried to resuscitate him. She tried to pray for him to come back to life, but he didn’t. She failed to bring him. She cried, your Lordship she loved the baby so much that she was devastated. So, she decided to take Doom, which she had mixed with some Domestos so that she could end her life,” she said.

Phiri said she never wanted to live anymore as the purpose of her life had ended with the death of the child.

“She felt she had no purpose to continue living because the son she was living for was dead,” said Phiri.

She told the court that friends of Nawa Sipalo, the child’s father, are the ones that suggested that Phiri had poisoned herself and the child when they went to the hospital.

Phiri, however, said that the allegations did not make sense because there was no substance on the boy’s body to show that he had been poisoned.

“I went to see Eden (boy), he was just there sleeping peacefully, no substance on his body. He was clean,” she said.

And Phiri, testified that Namweene would suffer from depression and that she even sought therapy with a Dr, Folotiya and Psych Health Zambia.

With tears in her eyes, she told the court that Namweene suffered mental, verbal and physical abuse during her childhood at the hands of their late aunt.

Phiri said at some point, the accused even ran away from home to live on the streets.

“She was abused mentally, verbally and physically by my late aunt, who was married to my late mother’s younger brother,” she narrated.

Phiri attested that in 2004, Namwene attempted to commit suicide by taking an overdose of Panadol.

“In 2005, I got married and took her in. During this time, I noticed she was battling with anger issues,” she stated.FRA LAWYER KILLS SON

17th February,2022 – Ibex police station received a report on 15th February,2022 in which Male Moya Mpehle aged 28 of plot number 52 in ibex hill off twin palm road reported that a Male Juvenile Ayden Sipalo aged 2 of ibex hill died after being given a suspected poison known as blue death insect powder Doom by the mother female Namwene Phiri aged 31, a lawyer for Food Reserve Agency after the body was found lying on the bed with foam of vomits on the mouth and the mother in a similar condition with a written statement beside confirming having committed suicide written on 15th February,2022.

President HH does spend significant time on social-media even as late as 02:00 -Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The Centre-Pivot Irrigation Story

During the 2023 AgriTech Expo, President Hakainde Hichilema discouraged young people using social-media to complain but to use their time to be productive.

“Zambians stay calm. Mundandaula too much pa social-media. Kukacha cabe ni social-media, ici, nicha, come forward, become a small investor, become a small investor, I stay on this platform, I see 02;00hrs, guys are hammering, and all they are doing is just talk. Reserve some of that time, put it in one hectare, two hectares buy centre-pivot from Mr Ashok, Saro, (Saro Agro Industrial Ltd) and you see that it will take you away from social-media. Go to social-media to get market data, technology information, where to buy at a lower price. That’s what you need social-media for…and ofcourse greet your family members. But not 24/7 social-media.”

Take aways;

1. The President does spend significant time on social-media even as late as 02;00.

2. The reference to young people to use their time productively is welcome but the advice to young people to buy hectres of land and irrigation Center Pivots showed a President out of touch.

Land and Centre-Pivots require significant amount of capital financing unaffordable for a young people who live in a country that literally doesn’t offer financing to entrepreneurial ideas, and even if they did,the banks would need collateral security, and massive experience before they could offer their expensive financing.

3. He is called the “Facebook President” because he relied heavily on the use of social-media to get elected! Closing the door of opportunity after entering!

I asked for a quote from a supplier of irrigation centre pivots, here is the answer!

The total cost of purchasing a Pivot machine can be defined according to the composition of said machine.

To design a Pivot irrigation system, there are some details we need to know:

A plan of the land with its elevations, showing the location of the water and electricity supplies.

The size and shape of the land.

By means of this datum we decide on the type of system (circular, sectorial, linear, hippodrome…), whether stop-in-slot or auto-reverse is required (the latter may be pivot-point or end-tower), whether an end gun is required to increase the irrigable area, and the composition of the machine (number and length of the spans and length of the overhang).

The flowrate and pressure available. This determines the diameter of the main piping of the system and the need or otherwise to use low-pressure sprinklers.

The type of soil and its orography. The wheels to be used for the Pivot machine depend on this factor; standard wheels or high-flotation wheels, and the advisability of installing emitters that spray the water over a greater area, to facilitate filtration and to prevent run-off.

Or perhaps to recommend a dry wheel package, consisting of extending the sprinkler outlet above the wheels rearwards with regard to the direction of movement, so that the wheels always run on dry ground, preventing them from sinking into the rut when the soil is clay-like.

The crops foreseen. This reveals the water requirements and therefore the flow to be distributed, and also the height of the Pivot machine in order to clear the crops.
The unevenness of the land.

This forces us to incorporate pressure regulators to guarantee the same flowrate at all the outlets, regardless of the varying levels of the ground.

The availability of electrical power. If there is none, an electrical generator must be considered to provide power for the Pivot irrigation system.

The water supply. If there is no natural or pumped pressure, the pump and the piping necessary to supply the Pivot must be calculated. In the case of linear systems or raingers, the ingress of water to the system inlet may be via a hose or drawn from a channel.

Is the area windy? For low-growing crops or in windy areas it is advisable to install drops that bring the sprinklers closer to the ground, thus reducing evaporation and dispersal by the wind. It is also advisable to provide for anchoring systems to ensure the safety of the Pivot.

Purchasing a Pivot irrigation machine is investing in technology. It entails a guarantee of capital return, as it increases productivity and expands the agricultural frontier, improves income and day-to-day work, increases the value of land that was recently considered to be a marginal area, generates stability of supply, eliminates climate uncertainty, brings environmental benefits…

Is the Kwacha Appreciation as a result of Central Bank intervention (releasing some dollars in the economy)?- Chishala Kateka

The Zambian Kwacha Exchange Rate
24th April 2023

After a seeming free fall, the Kwacha has rallied strongly against against major currencies and moved from about K22:$1 down to K17.4:$1 and all this within a week.

This is to be greatly appreciated considering the high cost of imported goods to an ordinary Zambian.

Having said that, as the public, we have not received an explanation of what is happening to our exchange rate.

In the last few months, we have seen the Kwacha go into free fall, and then rallying against major currencies rather rapidly. The cause of the loss and the rapid exchange rate gain, has not been explained to the public by those that should and as a result, the cause of the losses and gains are left to conjecture.

Why is it important to understand the underlying cause for the foreign currency fluctuations?

For the business community, it helps with planning. If the reason for the movement of the rate is known, either way, it will then be possible to know whether that movement will be sustained over a long period or not. For a business dealing with large volumes of foreign exchange, a difference of say, K6 in the rate, can result in large foreign exchange losses. This is why, for a business, a stable exchange rate is preferable.

We have seen celebrations, in some quarters, to the effect that the exchange rate has come down. Before we join in those celebrations however, we again ask – Why has the exchange rate come down?

  • Is this as a result of Central Bank intervention (releasing some dollars in the economy)?
  • Have we embarked on some venture that has started to generate foreign exchange?
  • Have we received an injection of funds in the economy?

One-off interventions will not sustain the exchange rate at an adequately low level and the rate will trend upwards again as soon as the effects of that intervention wears off.

What will sustain the rate, and what we as a nation should be pushing for, is our embarking on economic activities, that can generate adequate foreign exchange for the nation. This is an imperative.

Sharing information regarding the cause of foreign exchange rate movements will enable the business community to make informed decisions.

Mumbi Phiri Should Blame Her Loud Mouth And Not President Hichilema For Her 429 Days In Prison- UPND

MUMBI PHIRI SHOULD BLAME HER LOUD MOUTH AND NOT PRESIDENT HICHILEMA FOR HER 429 DAYS IN PRISON

April 24th, 2023

LUSAKA – Watching former PF deputy Secretary General Josephine Mumbi Phiri on the COSTA program on Diamond TV gave me the impression that what our mother needs more is Professional Mental Counselling and Management than media appearances.

Ms Phiri who spent 429 and a quarter days in a Mongu correctional facility on a charge of murder until the state entered a Nolle Prosequi seemed more bitter than she wanted the whole world to believe.

In the first place, it is common knowledge that Madam Phiri said more than she was supposed to during an interview with Kalani Muchima immediately after the shooting and killing of Lawrence Banda in Kaoma in 2019 leading to her incriminating herself in the matter and subsequent arrest.

We wonder how and where she decided to get the audacity to blame Republican President Hakainde Hichilema for her incarceration when ( in the words of Costa Mwansa) she opened her mouth louder than she should have. How then does she say the Head of State was playing a vengeance card on her.

If President Hakainde Hichilema wanted to play a vengeance card, We wonder how many PF leaders and members would have been in prison as we write this statement down today looking at the amount of atrocities committed under Madam Phiri’s watch when she served as the 4th most senior PF official in the country.

It was during her reign as PF Deputy Secretary General that several people were arrested, persecuted ad others killed without any recourse. Why wasn’t the Lawrence Banda murder case resolved between 2019 and 2023. What were the limiting factors. Where was Mumbi Phiri who claimed so loudly that she is the voice of the voiceless when a young Mrs Glazer Matapa and children had their bread winner slain by PF members? Where was she when a cold hand of the police under their watch led to the deaths of Chibulo Mapenzi and Vespers Shimuzhila, Joseph Kaunda and Nsama Nsama. Did the country ever see or hear Mama Phiri call on the living God when Zambians were being gassed while more than 50 people died under mob justices on allegations of being behind the gassing. Did she rise to speak up for the voiceless that suffered during that period. Young Frank Mugala was killed right at the gate of his school by a police bullet. Did Amai Phiri say any prayers for the family or there was no need to do so because it benefitted her and the regime?

The whole wide world watched Mutinta Hichilema cry while looking for her husband whose whereabouts she was not sure of. Did Madam Phiri hold her hand in sympathy or she stood on the mountain top to rebuke her while clapping triumphantly.

Today she wants to cry lion, lion accusing President Hakainde Hichilema of engineering her 429 days in prison when we all know that it was her loud mouth that got her in trouble in the first place. President Hichilema has showed statesmanship by restraining his agitated members from revenging against PF leaders and members for the atrocities committed against any member of society seen wearing anything red ( including a Manchester United football jersey) Let me ask Madam Phiri to imagine, difficult as it might be for her, but we shall ask her to do so. Just imagine if President Hakainde Hichilema had turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the feelings of his members and allowed for a ‘ friendly match’ even just for two days, how much damage would have been caused to this nation including herself as the 4th senior most official of the PF? Our advise to Madam Phiri is to keep quiet and not talk about vengeance because Zambians and President Hichilema could have forgiven but not forgotten. Let the sleeping dogs lie Amai.

She also claimed during the same programme that the killers of Lawrence Banda are out in the streets free and enjoying life. Maybe we ask the police to revisit the case and find out who are those killers that are moving freely on the streets. She seems to know more than the police do and maybe the courts have convicted a wrong person in Shebby Chilekwa. Maybe we should remind her that she is out on a Nolle Prosequi and not outright discharge or acquittal. We don’t need to explain what that means. Maybe we should request the police to check on her loud self incriminating mouth again. She says President Hakainde Hichilema is not being truthful about his 127 days in prison. Why should the nation believe her and not Mr Hichilema when all she did in the 10 years of PF rule was to lie?

We wish to advise the women movement such as NGOCC and ZWLG, the Church and family to offer her professional counselling services before she finds herself at crossroads with the law again. There is a family that is still grieving because it lost a son, brother, husband, father and bread winner to the cold arm of death orchestrated by her party.

The advise to her is to leave President Hakainde Hichilema out of her misfortune but instead concentrate on her healing process and avoid any media or public appearances as it is not doing her any good. Healing is a process and we advice her to concentrate on her marriage and family as she had promised the nation immediately after the humbling and humiliating August 12th, 2021 election loss. A loss can be difficult to handle at time.

Zambians have forgiven but not forgotten the many atrocities of the PF regime and the fact that they are enjoying their freedoms of expressions and speech as provided for under the new dawn administration should not make them think that they are the only ones that worship a living God.

Tondolo musuma bamayo Amai Josephine Mumbi Phiri.

“It could happen to you”…a Zambian filling station will kill your car- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

“It could happen to you”.

…a Zambian filling station will kill your car

Amb. Anthony Mukwita wrote on 23rd April 2023

This year, a video went viral filmed from a gas station called Karan in Zambia where a substance that was neither petrol nor diesel had been pumped out, believed to have been filled in cars of various unsuspecting motorists.

I looked at the video and said, “that looks familiar to what happened to my car” but is it really true? Do gas stations in Zambia pump contaminated stuff in our cars?

I hit the internet and found various complaints from motorist in Lusaka who had been taken for suckers by filling stations whose cars they messed up and got away with it.

Today the gas station is still doing booming business while the motorists have coped up huge costs on car repairs due to contaminated fuel supplies.

Fuel Contamination, a personal experience

It was a bright Saturday afternoon September when my family and I, our two boys and wife decided to leave home in Roma and go for a ride, wherever the road would take us.

I switched on our family Range Rover we have owned since 2016 while we worked for lovely country Zambia in Stockholm, Sweden until we returned home.

The dashboard on gas said, you have a quarter tank before the next refill so I made a mental note to refuel before we could go to wherever the road would take us.

The mood was high in the car, a normal weekend family get together out of the house, or so we thought.

Just about 5kms on our road, Zambezi Rd from home in Roma, we turned left by a gas station, I told the gas attendant, ´Diesel´ K500 please´, which that time September was about 23 litres not the 16 litres it is today.

We gassed up and drove off innocently but just about another 5kms from the gas station on Zambezi Rd onto Nangwenya road, before we could get into Addis Abba Drive, the Range Rover putt putted, smoked and came to a complete stop.

I got out to check what could have been the problem, did I hit and break something? No, I didn’t but right behind our car, a pleasant Youngman drives behind, his name is Kalenga.

Kalenga runs a car business on Nangwenya Rd just adjust the International School of Lusaka.

He dashes out of his car and comes me straight and says, “I saw the smoke as I drove right behind you, what fuel does your Range Rover use?
I said, “Its diesel propelled why?” as Kalenga opened the fuel cap and said, “are you coming from a filling station now?” I said yes.

Kalenga swiped his finger next to the fuel cap where it is clearly written “diesel” put his finger and said, “they “they put petrol in your diesel tank, smell this.”

I smelt it and true to Kalenga´s word, a mechanic by profession it was petrol.

It is about 4pm on a Saturday so what to do? The first thing I do is call the ever reliable ever dependable Alliance Motors that can fix any problem Range Rover.

They say, “Ambassador we will send you a number right now don’t drive the car, a tow truck will come and pick your car and we will look at it on Monday.”
I abide because even though I can play diplomacy and author, I can’t change a light bulb let alone know the trouble with a diesel or petrol car.

My wife and boys check on exasperated me from the passenger seat as curious onlookers start to gather.

A lovely motherly woman reverses her car, jumps out and comes to me and say, “Ambassador I recognised by the roadside from your many pictures in the media, is there anything I can do to help, maybe take your wife and children home?”
I said after getting her name, “Madam I am most humbled, but I have already called for a taxi I am most grateful.”

Kalenga comes to me and says, “sir you have to take the filling station to task, here is my number I will vouch for you.”

On Monday, it takes Alliance Motors, the Range Rover Zeitgeists, the whole day to bring down the complicated diesel tank, drain it and examine the drained more than 23 litres of fuel, including reserve.

I get the most feared call, “Sir the fuel in your Range Rover is contaminated but we are not responsible for saying what the contamination is its above our pay grade what you need to do is immediately engage ERB the Energy Regulations Board for final determination we are sorry.”

Enter Energy Regulations Board

The next day I hit the phone and call the ERB whose efficiency pleasantry shock me, they give me an email address to put the complaint on record which I do.

The next day, an ERB team visits the gas station on Zambezi Rd, get samples for testing but then, minutes, hours and nights have passed.

Our Range Rover tank was contaminated on Saturday afternoon, ERB is getting diesel samples on a Monday afternoon.

The gas station, and this is where I dropped the ball as a normally astute intelligent individual takes a fuel sample to ZABS for testing, I go to ZABS to have an independent test and they say “don’t worry sir we are testing the same sample after all.”
The next day, the ZABS jury is out, “the fuel satisfies what we think is normal fuel, meaning diesel.”

I protest and take the matter to the ERB, a hearing is set I go with an entire arsenal, a lawyer provided by brother and friend Paulman Chungu, my wife Elaine and a team of experts from Alliance Motors.
ERB says to find closure, let’s get another sample of the contaminated fuel and do a second test independently as ERB, I say yes sir. The truth shall set us free.

ERB gets a sample from Alliance Motors, two weeks pass, three and after a long whole month in a move unprecedented, like ZABS, the test is okey. The gas was satisfactory.

No reference was given to the comprehensive engineering report from Alliance Motors that the fuel pumped into my car was contaminated zilch.

I love ERB like any other guy but on this one I had to raise a red flag so on 16th December 2022, I wrote Mr Yohane Mutale, the Director General and asked a few questions:

  1. Kindly give me a full list of certified laboratories in Zambia (in case I seek a second opinion)
  2. Please give me a full list of fuel stations in Zambia, Lusaka priority
  3. Kindly name the fuel stations on the top list of complaints

I thought I could make an informed decision on how to proceed on my injury with gas station from this but alas, I hit a brick wall.

From December 16 last year, Mr Yohane Mutale has not responded to my letter, not even acknowledged it, it’s like it was never sent to him.

No one has asked Alliance Motors why they stated that the fuel in my Range Rover was contaminated from their expert scientific engineering view.

I have spent more than K150,000 trying to bring my Range Rover back on the road, it’s not happening because anyone who knows cars will tell you that salvaging a diesel engine messed up by petrol is almost a mission impossible.

Meanwhile I see fuel challenges and bumper stickers (adverts) and see people excited, I just say to myself, do you know what is being pumped into your gas tank as you win K100?

You are paying the gas station to eff up your car.
As I close the first series, because I will do loads of this until I find justice, why can’t the ERB interrogate evidence of car repair companies and ask them how they reach their decisions before closing cases in favour of gas stations.

Needless to say, the ERB record at the moment stands at the highest pedestal of trust to the best of my knowledge.

I hate every time I drive by the filling station that killed our favourite Range Rover on Zambezi Rd.
We drove this car from Stockholm to C Copenhagen, Amsterdam to the Hague, Berlin to Prague until we reached the graveyard on Zambezi Rd in September. No problem.

One question still on my mind is why did ERB not question Alliance Motors on its findings of contamination? Just spit balling.

Why has the ERB not responded to my humble query from last year December 2022? I am just a useless complainant.

I pray what happened to us, won’t happen to you. Please mind the gas at your next gas stop. I am told the best gas stops are Total, Engen and Puma, the rest are at your own risk. Should we sue?

Feel free to share your experience.

Sudan evictions ‘not possible at this time,’ Canada informs its citizens

0

Due to the closure of airspace and ferocious fighting between competing forces, Canada has informed its people living in Sudan that evacuations are “not possible at this time”.

The Canadian government advised citizens to “continue to shelter in place” in a tweet sent out on Saturday, assuring them that it was “coordinating with other countries to respond to the crisis.”

The tweet was sent before US President Joe Biden said that members of the US government and their families had been evacuated during a special military operation.

Earlier on Saturday, Saudi Arabia said it had evacuated Canadian nationals from Sudan to Saudi Arabia. However, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not provide the number of Canadians it had helped to evacuate.

There are 1,596 Canadians signed up to the Registration of Canadians Abroad Service in Sudan but this number provides only an estimate of Canadians in Sudan as registration is voluntary.

Since registration is voluntary, the number of registrants for any given area is typically not fully representative of the number of Canadians actually residing or visiting that area. Canadian citizens can register through the Registration of Canadians Abroad service on the Travel.gc.ca site.

Fierce fighting erupted in the northeastern country on April 15 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The ensuing violence has seen hundreds killed and thousands wounded, igniting fears of a humanitarian catastrophe.

Many Sudanese people have been desperately trying to flee escalating violence in Khartoum, where hospitals are being flooded with victims.

But escaping Sudan now is no easy task. Bus tickets out of the conflict zone are estimated to be at least five times more expensive than before.

Survivors have told CNN that they wanted to leave the country “at any cost.” “Death surrounded us from all directions so I said it would be better for us to die attempting to cling to life while trying to survive instead of dying by a stray bullet at home or maybe dying of hunger or thirst,” said a father of four.

In addition to Canadians, Saudi authorities said they had also evacuated people from 11 other countries which included Qatar, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates and Burkina Faso, as well as its own citizens.

ARE THESE SHORTAGES OF MEALIE MEAL A PRODUCT OF SOCIALISM?- Fred M’membe

SO WHY THE SHORTAGES?

ARE THESE SHORTAGES OF MEALIE MEAL A PRODUCT OF SOCIALISM?

Mr Hakainde Hichilema once attributed the shortages of essential commodities like cooking oil, and luxury items like Coca-Cola under the Kaunda era to socialist policies. He linked the shortages of basic commodities to socialism. He said, “communism and socialism failed, It did not just fail here it failed even in the heart of communism, so when I see advancement of those issues, sometimes I say, ‘do we want to go back to shortages. We heard of the cooking oil, queuing for cooking oil’… The Coca-Cola you take for granted today, was not there…”

Today, we have very serious mealie meal shortages that the country has not witnessed in a while in a very capitalist Zambia of Mr Hichilema! How does he explain this ideologically, and these shortages?

Our response to Mr Hichilema’s claims at that time was as follows:

IN DEFENCE OF OUR SOVEREIGNTY, DIGNITY AND SOCIALISM

By Dr Fred M’membe

It’s very sad that some key political leaders of our country don’t know or understand what caused shortages of cooking oil and other essential commodities during the last part of Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s reign.

These leaders are out of ignorance attributing the shortages of many consumer goods under the Kaunda era to socialism.

Firstly, the Kaunda government was not a socialist government. At most, Dr Kaunda can be said to have been a social democrat. And these were extremely honest leaders who cared more about their people than self enrichment. They had opportunities to enrich themselves like their colleagues did in Kenya and other African countries who robbed their people of land.

The period of shortages was at the height of the liberation struggle in southern Africa when the country was totally blockaded – with no dealings with South Africa, Namibia, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Angola, Mozambique, and Botswana was not the prosperous Botswana of today.

Tanzania was also not the Tanzania of today. And oil prices had shot up worldwide. They had to start companies to produce their own cooking oil and other essential commodities. And these were the companies some of these leaders denigrating them today came to privatise at very exorbitant fees or commissions and enriched themselves.

Thanks to the very high sacrifices our leaders and our people had make that made it possible for our leaders today to go to liberated South Africa and do deals with representatives of corporations that colonised, exploited and humiliated us for centuries.

People who claim to be economists should have a better understanding of things than this. This is really an exhibition of crass ignorance and dishonesty.

Socialism is not about, or synonymous with, shortages of mealie meal, cooking oil and other essential commodities.

How can someone in this era and age think having or drinking Coca-Cola is a big achievement, an indicator of economic and social prosperity? What is Coca-Cola anyway? A mixture of carbon dioxide, water, sugar and caffeine! Of what nutrition value is Coca-Cola anyway? It is actually dangerous and harmful to the human body.

And what is wrong with our people coming up with their drinks?

Is this how empty and pro imperialist they are? What will remain of this country at the end of their rule? Coca-Cola will be everything! They will own everything. What will remain under the ownership of our people?

Socialism is about a better and dignified life for all our people anchored on equity, solidarity, humility and honesty and sovereignty of their homeland.

And socialism has shown how poor nations can get out of poverty in the shortest historical times. Look at the achievements of Cuba – a country fought and blockaded for over 63 years. Without the minerals Zambia has, Cuba in 2020 had a GDP of around 107.35 billion U.S. dollars. GDP is an important indicator of a country’s economic power.

GDP in Zambia was expected to reach 24.00 USD Billion by the end of 2021. In the long-term, the Zambia GDP which has been pursuing unbridled neoliberal capitalist policies for more than 30 years is projected to trend around 27.00 USD Billion in 2023, according to some econometric models.
India’s socialist state of Kerale is leading in many economic and social indicators and scientific achievements.

Whatever their attempts to credit China’s achievements to capitalism, that is a great socialist state pursuing socialism with Chinese characteristics. And this what its leaders say. They attribute their economic successes to socialism.
We also have the successes of Vietnam.

The ignorant attempt to smear socialism and socialists to hide their greed and corruption quest to become billionaires won’t do. No matter what they say or do socialism will one day triumph in our homeland.

Capitalism has for centuries failed our people. Let them show us where capitalism has succeeded in Africa?

And more interesting is the fact that the most achievements scored in Zambia can be attributed to certain socialist inspired principles that were implemented in the country. The creation of free education, infrastructure development, creation of state owned enterprises that employed many and some which still stand today are as a result of having a human face towards national economic development which in itself is socialism.

Most leaders today who are a product of free education and other socially oriented programmes want to ridicule a system that moved them from poverty and then support imperialist policies that only benefit a few foreign interests.

Zambia definitely needs a citizen led economic development agenda which under a socialist government will be attained.

We want a Zambia where Zambians can have genuine businesses and not these crooked dealers, tenderpreneurs calling themselves businessmen.

Like China, Zambia will manage to free its people from poverty through socialism with Zambian characteristics.

It’s socialism and only socialism that can guarantee our sovereignty, dignity and prosperity.

GERMANY CITY DONATES FIRE TRUCK, 50 LAPTOPS TO CHIPATA

The Dormagen City in Germany has donated a fire truck and 50 laptops to its twin city of Chipata in Zambia.

The Fire truck, valued at €150,000 Euros and 50 laptops valued at €50, 000 Euros were handed over by the Mayor of Dormagen City Erik Lierenfeld at the Dormagen City Town Hall on Saturday.

And receiving the donation on behalf of the Zambian government, Charge D’Affaires at the Zambian Embassy in Germany Dorcas Chileshe said the donation will go a long way in improving service delivery to the people of Chipata.

She further called on other city councils in Zambia to emulate Chipata City by initiating partnerships with other cities in Germany.

Dormagen City Mayor Erik Lierenfeld has since pledged to help connect other German cities with Zambian cities.

Chipata and Dormagen cities signed a twinning agreement in October 2022 and are focusing on exchange programmes for health workers and teachers.

And Chipata City Mayor George Mwanza who is in Dormagen city with a team from his Council and from Local government says the partnership between the two cities will see Dormagen City investing in a solar power plant in Chipata which will produce electricity for local people.

The twinning programme will also promote tree planting to address deforestation which has been a big challenge in Chipata.

The Mayor also explained that the human resource exchange programme will start with a small number of teachers and medical personnel who will work in Dormagen City for a year to three years.

This is according to a statement issued to Byta FM News by Lubinda Kashewe, First Secretary – Press Zambian Embassy in Germany.

WHAT DID THEY DO WITH $750MILLION LOAN RECEIVED FROM WORLD BANK?- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

WHAT DID THEY DO WITH $750MILLION LOAN RECEIVED FROM WORLD BANK?

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Both local and foreign public debt has increased dramatically in two years.

In 2022, the World Bank Group (WBG) through the International Development Association (IDA) disbursed US$750 million concessional loan to Zambia in what was termed as the highest-ever financing support to the country in a single calendar year.

Even more significant, it came after Government secured a US$1.3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The first instalment of US$185.7 million from the IMF bail-out package was also disbursed in 2022. Zambia is waiting for the next disbursement of $188million recently announced after a Staff-level Agreement Review was done and is svhefuled for IMF Exdcutive Board approval.

The World Bank stated that the US$750million concessional loan went to support concessional development policy financing (DPF).

Concessional loans , or soft loans, have more generous terms than market loans. These generally include below-market interest rates, grace periods in which the loan recipient is not required to make debt payments.

So what did Government spend these two concessional loans totalling US$935.5million.

When PF received $750million loan from the Eurobond market in 2012, there was public pressure for Government to show what the money was used for.

It’s therefore imperative that Government shows and demonstrates how the $935million was spent in 2022, especially that these funds were not directed to any tangible projects.

ZAMBIA’S DEBT POSITION

On 23rd March 2023, the Minister of Finance Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane gave a Ministerial Statement in Parliament and released the following details.

■ Central Government Foreign Debt-US$14Billion.

■ Guaranteed State-owned Enterprise loans-$1.5billion.

■ Non-Guaranteed State-Owned Enterprise-$91million.

■ $4.06billion- The debt service standstill also led to a 46.86 percent increase in Central Government arrears to External Creditors to USD 4.06 billion (being principal and interest) as at end December 2022, from USD2.16 bilion recorded at end December 2021.

He stated thst the Ministry has also continued to engage Zambia’s External Creditors in an effort to restructure.

■ Domestic Debt- the stock of Government Securities increased by 9% to K210.0 billion as at end-December 2022 from K193.0 billion at end 2021. Performance of the Government Securities market during the year was relatively unstable, with better participation observed in periods surrounding the announcements related to the IMF programme.

■ Total Public debt was equivalent to US$31.6bn excluding interest arrears, and equivalent of USD32.8bn including interest arrears.

HICHILEMA FEELS THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA

And unleash his anger against youths…

By Antonio Mourinho Mwanza

It is laughable that a man who used social media to win the presidency is today complaining against the very platform that made him President.

President Hakainde SAMMY Hichilema has complained that ‘Zambians are spending too much time on social media complaining’ about the economic hardships they are going through.

He says Zambians must stop being on social media and ‘invest and become entrepreneurs’.

How, just how will young Zambians become successful entrepreneurs when;

1. Sammy and his Government have denied youths capital injection to invest and start up small businesses

2. Sammy and his Government have denied Zambians access to government contracts.

Sammy and his Government are giving all the major government contracts to his friends and foreign investors. He has cut out all Zambian owned SMEs from government business.

3. Sammy and his failed IMF economic policies have skyrocketed the cost of doing business. He has increased the cost of fuel, transport, electricity, storage, water, materials etc making it hard for SMEs to survive the harsh economic conditions.

4. Sammy has squeezed out liquidity in the economy. There is no money. Everyone is complaining. Further, him and his buddy Denny Kalyalya at Bank of Zambia have completely tightened liquidity by increasing the Statutory Reserve Ratio (SRR) and the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR).

It is hard to get a loan from the bank and even if you manage to get one, the interest rates are too high. People are losing their property to banks for failing to payback the expensive money they borrowed.

5. The cost of living has become too high; people are failing to meet basic needs. The Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (as measured by the JCTR) for a family of 5 in Lusaka has jumped to over K9,200 per month.

How many people in Lusaka get 9000 as their net salary or net income per month?

No wonder crime and prostitution have terribly increased in Lusaka and other towns. It is because of hunger and pressure ya ma bills.

6. Sammy has refused to pay local suppliers and contractors, denying them the very revenue they need to survive and grow their businesses

7. Sammy is denying indigenous Zambians the opportunity to participate in Government business by refusing to float public tenders to the public, instead he is single sourcing all huge contracts, from fertiliser to medicine and giving these to foreign companies and his business-connects.

7. Sammy is giving Tax Holidays and other tax incentives to foreign companies but he is denying local businesses the same tax breaks or tax incentives for them to survive and expand.

As we speak, ZRA is busy suspending and cancelling tax certificates of local SMEs for the so called ‘non-compliance’ but they are failing to do the same to huge mining conglomerates who are externalising and robbing Zambia of billions of dollars annually through tax breaks and illicit financial flows.

ZRA is quick to punish small local businesses but they are scared sick to punish mining giants. In fact, ZRA has to get clearance from politicians for them to make the big boys accountable for non tax-compliance.

We are losing over 3 billion dollars annually from the mining sector alone through tax breaks and illicit financial flows. In total we are losing a staggering 7 billion dollars annually from major foreign conglomerates through illicit financial flows and tax breaks.

8. Ordinary Zambians who are struggling just to put food on the table or pay the landlord or pay hospital bills or manage to take their children to a decent school are paying more taxes combined than foreign multinationals combined.

Why is Sammy punishing Zambians with taxes but giving huge tax concessions to foreigners? Why does he care so much about foreigners and detest his own people? Why why why?

If Sammy wants the youths to stop being on social media 24/7 like he used to be when he was seeking their support then he should;

1. Lower the cost of doing business

2. Create a conducive environment for business by removing all inhibiting taxes and ZRA punitive measures on local businesses. Further he should revise downward the MPR and SRR.

3. Pay all outstanding arrears government is owing local suppliers and contractors

4. Give tax breaks and tax incentives to local and struggling SMEs

5. Give local SMEs preferential treatment when awarding government contracts

6. Give youths substantial capital for start-up projects

7. Bring down the cost of living. People have no purchasing power. No business can survive when no one has the money to buy.

To the youths, Nankwe-nankwe. Continue hammering him. Don’t turn off your social media, use it to the max until he delivers and if he doesn’t, kick him out of office in the next elections.

He wants us not to complain when things are bad just because him yali balancer. He is enjoying everything using our hard-earned taxes.

Now that he is in State House he doesn’t want us to use the same social media he was using 24/7 to win elections. Aikona man.

ECL WAS MORE DEVASTATED BY KUNGO’S ASSASSINATION THAN LOSING TO HH – Dr. ZIMBA

Lusaka, Sunday (April 23, 2023)

Former Presidential Political Advisor Chris Zumani Zimba says former President Edgar Lungu was more devastated by the brutal assassination of PF Provincial Chairperson Jackson Kungo than his electoral defeat to President Hakainde Hichilema.

Speaking to Afro Democracy Journal (ADJ), Dr. Zimba urged President Hichilema and Dr. Lungu to hold talks for genuine political reconciliation.

He said the assassination of Kungo by known UPND cadres on August 12, 2021 had been ignored while that of UPND cadre Lawrence Banda was more amplified.

“I would like to share some moment of reflection with regards to the 2021 August Presidential and General Elections in Zambia. It is important to note that the 2021 Presidential and General Elections were historical in nature in many ways. There are certain perspectives and experiences at Presidential level from the point of State House that sometimes are only privy to some of us in terms of knowing what happened and how the President reacted and managed different situations which many people are not aware of. Suffice to mention today, I wanted to pick a perspective which I think is very important, already in public domain and known by many Zambians on some events leading to the 2021 August Elections and how President Lungu, then, interpreted and felt about it,” he said.

Dr. Zimba said the same zeal to fight for Banda’s justice should be extended to Kungo even in his death, because it was too heavy and heartbreaking to President Lungu then.

“The fact is that the death of PF North Western Provincial Chairperson Jackson Kungo was very devastating news to President Lungu, a lot of people do not know that he was more depressed and more devastated by the death of Kungo than his own political defeat to HH. What happened was that on that material day on 12th August, 2021, it was a very busy and fast day because everyone was voting country wide. President Lungu, myself and the First Lady, woke up very early and went to vote in Chawama where I escorted him because I was registered at the same polling station. When we came back to State House, he was at Nkwazi House, he needed now to reflect and just receive reports on voter turn out and later on, the results.

Dr. Zimba said he had a deeper conversation with Late Kungo, two hours before he was murdered in Solwezi District, North Western Province.

“We needed to be on top of the game as State House and on my side as Presidential Political Advisor, I was busy calling different Parliamentary Candidates in various Constituencies. I was calling Provincial Chairpersons to know what was happening in their Provinces, Districts and Constituencies. Kungo was one of the people I called that morning, two hours before his death.

Dr. Zimba was disappointed that PF Polling Agents were being chased, intimidated and beaten at Polling Stations in UPND strongholds in full view of state police.

“We spoke at length, he explained the challenges for North Western Province because many Election Agents for PF were either being intimidated, harassed or beaten at Polling Stations. I did report and confirm the situation to the President regarding the situation in North Western, Southern and Western Provinces that PF Polling Agents were fighting running battles in polling stations from the three strongholds of the UPND,” he said.

Dr. Zimba said the reports he got of beating PF members in UPND strongholds was authenticated by videos that emerged showing the brutal murder of Kungo in full view of Law Enforcement Agencies.

“Around lunch time, videos started circulating showing how Jackson Kungo was strangled, moved up, stoned and brutally murdered at a polling station by UPND cadres. It was unbelievable and looked like it was not happening. Later on, official information reached the President, he watched the videos on how Kungo was murdered by a mob of the UPND cadres in full view of the police and army officers watching. I can assure you that that news was very devastating to President Lungu,” he said.

Dr. Zimba said the strangling to death of Kungo created pressure from PF members that wanted the election to be petitioned but that President Lungu did not want to see more Zambians murdered like Kungo.

“I could see the pain which he expressed and showed openly. When election results started emerging at a later point, it became very tricky because Kungo’s death was the main issue at the bottom of the heart of President Lungu. He is a very responsible leader to me because he repeatedly said we needed to respect Kungo in death. So, he traveled to Solwezi with myself, State House Staff and party officials. He mourned Kungo and physically buried him in Solwezi, we escorted the President. Even at the point when the President was conceding defeat, there were a lot of questions with the late Kabwe Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Tutwa Ngulube asking the question repeatedly to say how should we not petition these Presidential results when President Hakainde Hichilema has won the Presidency on the alter of blood and death of Kungo? Apart from other electoral malpractices in the three Provinces, Honourable Tutwa Ngulube was at pains to realize that the PF and the President were not instructing lawyers to petition results when in the actual sense, Kungo was lying dead at the Presidential victory of HH. However, later on, we as State House guided PF members who wanted a petition that the President had made up his mind not to petition, not to make any move but to concede defeat and hand over because he said that he never wanted to see another Zambian to die like Kungo,” he said.

Dr. Zimba said the stoning of Kungo like a stray dog should never happen to any other Zambian in future.

“President Lungu was very clear from the word go that the death of Kungo was regrettable, unacceptable and that the way he was murdered and mobbed on that election day was not supposed to happen to any other person. We had to convince a lot of other people that the President had already made up his mind, he wants to mourn the death of Kungo and respect him and his family for the loss of their father, son and uncle because Kungo meant a lot of things to different people where he came from. The former President was very categorical that Kungo was supposed to be honored. I want to emphasize that very few people know that the death of Kungo was more painful to President Lungu than the electoral defeat to HH. He could joke about election outcomes, but the death of Kungo was totally different because it was incomparable to the way he felt and handled it. It is important that we need to ensure that President Lungu and President Hichilema at some point should sit down, talk and reconcile as brothers. As you maybe aware, there has been a case of Mumbi Phiri and Shebby Chilekwa over the murder of Gaddafi Lawrence Banda, a UPND cadre. It has been everywhere in the media, so much politicized and a lot of hype about it but some of us that were in State House in August 2021 on that election day when Kungo was murdered, we know that President Lungu feels the same or even worse about Kungo because he was murdered physically by known people. Kungo was stoned like a stray street dog on that day,” he said.

Dr. Zimba said genuine reconciliation between President Hichilema and his predecessor would create a better political environment in future.

“If these leaders, HH and ECL, could sit down and begin to reflect on these issues, a better political environment can be configured where we are going in future. Kungo has been forgotten by many people. What is happening is that if we do not talk about it or share from the perspective that some of us who sat there, I think a lot of people may undermine the death of Kungo because he is just like any other citizen who needs Justice even in his death,” he said.

If Edgar Lungu decided to come back into active politics, President Hakainde Hichilema would be rattled, and probably, he would have serious difficulties to win the 2026 elections. This is because Hakainde lied his way through to power and now, citizens of Zambia can see that there was nothing really an issue with Edgar being President. Hakainde has failed to live up to his promises and he seems to have no shame about his failure.

When you list all what Hakainde promised to do, immediately, after winning power, you will find that he has done almost nothing where his promises are concerned.

We now believe that whatever this man was telling Zambians he would do once elected into office, he knew that he was lying, he was cheating and fooling Zambians. The man knew that he would not do anything. He knew that he would deliver nothing, that he would do the opposite of what he said he would, once elected into power.

Here is a man who said he would reduce the cost of fertilizer of a 50 kilograms to K250 each. Has Hakainde done that? The answer is categorical no. The prices of mealie meal are now very high than during the period of Edgar Lungu.

Hakainde said he would reduce the cost of fuel, to a single digit. Has he done so? Of course not.

Hakainde said that there would be free education from grade one to university. Has that been done? It hasn’t. Hakainde went to an extent of saying once he becomes President, people who sell mealie meal to Congo won’t be stopped and arrested, but instead, they would be encouraged to export the commodity in order for them to earn money and bring dollars into the country. What is happening now, with regards to those selling mealie meal to Congo, is opposite of what Hakainde promised Zambians.

When Hakainde was in opposition, he spoke passionately against the harassment of business houses by government, on the premise that they were judged as having links with the opposition. Today, this government of Hakainde has impounded trucks belonging to Aliboo , which are transporting mealie meal to Eastern, for no good reason but on the pretext that this company is trying to smuggle mealie meal, yet, the truth is, Hakainde is punishing Aliboo because he believes it is close to the former ruling party. These are things which Hakainde spoke against while in opposition.

Look at how Hakainde has strangled the Auditor General’s office. This office was scheduled by now, to release its report, on the plunder, corruption of government. This report is nowhere to be seen. Why? Because Hakainde and his minions do not want Zambians to know about their corruption, their plunder of tax payers money which has been detailed in the Auditor General’s report.
Look at how Hakainde – who was very vocal on the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) reports – but now, very mute about it, now that it has listed K6 billion worth of illicit transactions under the UPND administration.

When you sum all lies of Hakainde, and also look at the state of affairs in Zambia where the economy is concerned, you cannot help but understand why the man is damn scare of Edgar Lungu. If Edgar was to come back into active politics, Hakainde would be finished. This he knows deep down his heart, that is why, whenever they see Edgar outside doing his personal things, they get jittery and start barking around. Many people have realized that in fact, there was nothing wrong with Edgar being president. Many people today have realized that Edgar was better than Hakainde. If Edgar decided to come back into active politics, he would hurt Hakainde badly. S

Yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema hosted a horde of exploitative industrialists, the Grain Producers and Traders of Zambia comprising the Zambia National farmers Union, Grain farmers, Grain Traders, and Water Harvester Associations. These are members of Oil Seed stakeholders in Zambia, and this is a group that is at the centre of exploiting farmers in this country. Farmers spend a lot of money, time and labour to grow crops and when they harvest, this is a group that reaps them off, year in, year out by buying such produce and paying masese.

With obscurity on the agenda of the meeting which this group had with President Hichilema, we can only speculate as to what they discussed about. What we know as a matter of fact is that these characters who went to meet the President are heartless capitalists. They suck from the hard work of poor farmers in this country. With the rain fed crop yielding period bound, it is likely that these characters are on the move to lobby for policies that will oil their interests against majority Zambian farmers.

In the previous farming crop yielding period, we saw, for example how these capitalists manipulated prices of commodities, to disadvantage farmers while government watched without care.

If truly, the government represents the interests of majority farmers in this country, they can dictate prices of all farming commodities, in the same way, they regulate the fares in the transport sector. Why is it that government easily allows price manipulation in farming whereby, exploitative industrialists are free to manipulate prices at will?

In the 2021/2022 farming season soya beans production was at 475,353 metric tonnes and government was only buying 1,500 at K11.50 per kilogram leaving 473,853 for industrialists to buy. These industrialists decided to buy soya beans at as low as K4 per kilogram. This means, over 90% of the produced soya beans was being sold at extremely low prices by farmers.
Government did not intervene to regulate – or better still – put price index on farming products in the same way they do in other sectors of the economy. While these capitalists were giving farmers less money, the Tanzanian government was in need of 1 million metric tonnes of soya beans, offering $100 per 50kilogram and was willing to mop out all the soya beans in Zambia.

If indeed this government serves the interest of the people, it could mop out all the soya beans and offer farmers even more, and then, sell what they do not need to Tanzania and Congo which are ready to buy. But why doesn’t government do this? Because the government protects the interests of these capitalist groups and not farmers. If the government is interested in seeing farmers get a better deal from private buyers, all they have to do is allow exports. These exports need to be done in such a way that government is fully involved, and in this case, is the broker which buys from farmers and exports to countries in need of whatever farming commodities.

This could give farmers more income for their produce and would push the oil seed stakeholders to buy farming produce at the right price. For many years now, these exploitative capitalists have argued that if exports of farming products are allowed, it would push them to increase prices of commodities which they produce from the farming commodities. But when you look at the prices of animal feed, for example, they are high. Regardless of how much low prices they acquire farming commodities from farmers, finished products are always expensive. What is the point of continuing to cushion these capitalists? Is a farmer not worth government protection and love?

We hope that meeting which President Hichilema had with those capitalists is not about reaping off farmers, even this year. We shall wait and see.

FRA OPENS MARKETING SEASON

A brief analysis by Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The Food Reserve Agency has announced the opening of the 2023/24 Crop Marketing Season and the purchase of designated agricultural commodities.

The exercise will run from 1st May 2023 to 31st October 2023.

The gazette notice issued doesn’t have the set floor price and of concern, the opening of the crop marketing season has come three (3) months earlier.

The Food Reserve Agency traditionally opens the marketing season in July and the exercise runs to September/October of the year..

This is because FRA has to monitor the maize moisture content so that the recommended 12.5 percent moisture content suitable for storage is achieved before FRA can start to buy and store the maize. This os to avoid substantial loss and waste.

I guess the announcement to buy the crops starting next week is due to the monumental national crisis where the country has exported almost all its crops including the national strategic reserves, and has been forced to buy maize far ealier taking the risks of stocking a crop that is not ready for storage and warehousing.

In Zambia farmers use natural elements to dry maize and other crops, hence the delay in opening Crop Marketing Season.

Storing maize that has not reached right moisture content attracts molds and diseases which results in extremely high post-harvest losses.

In the 2023/2024 marketing season, FRA will maintain the 1,255 satellite depots across the country. This is good for the farmer as it reduces the long distances that have to be covered to take the crops to the storage stands, sheds,or warehouses.

By law, the FRA is mandated to buy eight designated crop commodities which include white maize, orange maize, rice, sorghum, sunflower, groundnuts, soya bean and beans as strategic food reserves.

FRA buys using commodity prices which consider farm gate and open market prices,
factoring in the cost of inputs to reflective pricing as well as consultations with market
shareholders and players in the crop marketing value chain.

In 2022 FRA bought the crops using the following prices;

  1. White maize from the K160 per 50 kg in 2021 to K180 per K50 kg bag, which is equivalent to K3,600 per metric tonne;
  2. Soya beans remained at K11 per kg or K550 per 50kg bag; and
  3. Rice also remained at K5 per kg, which is K200 per 40kg bag.

CONCLUSION

FRA has targeted to buy 250,000 metric tonnes. This is far below the recommended minimum national strategic reserves.

For example,in 2021 Crop Marketing Season, FRA purchased 947, 777.55 metric tons of maize valued at K2.8 billion, 121.60 metric tons of soya beans valued at K1.2 million and 656.80 metric tons of rice valued at K3.2 million.

In order to secure the strategic food reserves, we have always urged the Agency to take up the responsibility of drying the crops and invest in such equipment and technologies as required and thereby enter the market at the earliest possible time in order to meet their targets and to avoid unscrupulous buyers taking advantage of the small-scale farmers.

I am aware that the floor price, set by the Minister of Agriculture, has not been announced yet. So what scenario price and factors has FRA used? And what’s the price they are buying the crops? The farmer needs to know.

FRA is not the only player in the market as millers and grain traders are also present and price discovery for this year is important.

Jack Ma accepts university teaching post in Hong Kong

Jack Ma, founder of Chinese tech giant Alibaba, has been made an honorary professor of business at a top Hong Kong university, the school announced Friday.

The appointment comes weeks after the billionaire made a rare public appearance in China following his fall from grace during a government crackdown on the tech industry over two years ago.

Ma has kept a low profile since late 2020, when a speech he made attacking Chinese regulators was followed by Beijing pulling the plug on a planned IPO by Alibaba affiliate Ant Group.

A record fine of US$2.75 billion was later imposed on Alibaba for alleged unfair business practices.

The University of Hong Kong on Friday said Ma had accepted an honorary professorship from its business school.

A spokesperson for the institution said it welcomed Ma sharing “his rich knowledge and experience in business innovation and development”.

The professorship carries a three-year term ending in March 2026, according to local media.

The school’s website now contains a profile of Ma highlighting his expertise in “management and strategy”.

In 2018, the same university awarded Ma an honorary doctorate.

However, Ma has “no plans for public lectures or speeches”, according to the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper wholly owned by Alibaba.

The Jack Ma Foundation, a charitable organisation set up by the billionaire in 2014, told the Post that “after a hiatus from the world of education, Mr Ma looks forward to returning to campus life”.

Ma previously taught English for eight years at Hangzhou Dianzi University in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang before he launched Alibaba.

He also founded in 2015 a centre for entrepreneurship in Zhejiang along with several Chinese business heavyweights.

That institution was originally called Hupan University but had the term “university” removed from its name in 2021 amid Ma’s spat with Chinese authorities.

Ma has been spotted in a number of locations around the world over the past two years, including on the Spanish island of Mallorca, and was reportedly living in Japan for much of 2022.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET SERIOUS WITH FOOD SECURITY…. 250,000 metric tonnes is a joke says Peter Sinkamba

GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET SERIOUS WITH FOOD SECURITY

…. 250,000 metric tonnes is a joke says Peter Sinkamba

Kitwe… Saturday April 22, 2023

Currently Zambia has 458 units of storage facilities whose storage capacity is 2 million metric tonnes (MT) of which only 1.1 million MT is serviceable.

At the moment, the storage facilities are literally empty because the 168,000 MT in storage facility is already committed or sold.

The current maize production cycle for the 2022-2023 season is almost at harvest stage. However, the poor roll-out of the Fertilizer Input Support Program (FISP) is expected to impact output.

The national output is expected to be less than the 2021/2022 output of 3 million MT, most likely 2.5 million MT.

The current national consumption for both domestic and industrial uses is about 3 million MT. This implies that the country is likely to have a deficit of 500,000 MT of maize to meet the national domestic and industrial consumption.

Government, through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has announced the purchase of maize and other crops during the 2023/2024 marketing season. FRA has stated that it will buy 250,000 MT of maize; 1,000 MT of paddy rice; and 50,000 MT of soya beans. In effect, the total storage capacity for the grains to be procured will only be 300,000 MT of the 1.1 million MT that is serviceable.

In terms of maize, it is therefore envisaged by Government that the private sector will buy the remainder 2 million MT.

The implication of this is that the country will remain staple food insecure for the next two to three years. This is so because government uses FRA maize stocks to stabilize mealie meal prices.

Further, this entails that the food security objectives of FRA under the UPND Government have now become more symbolic than practical. This can be deduced from the poor distribution of inputs for the 2022/2023 farming season as well as the just announced marketing season for 2023/2024.

It is sad that staple food insecurity remains a significant challenge in UPND Government, that require urgent attention. But it appears, staple food security is not a key agenda issue for these colleagues of ours. The conduct of the Minister of Agriculture, both inside and out of Parliament tells the whole story.

Believe me, consumers should brace for price volatility and scarcity of mealie meal in 2023 and 2024.

PARLIAMENT TO CENSURE AGRIC MINISTER OVER MEALIE MEAL CRISIS

Lusaka, Saturday (April 22, 2023)

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament ,Brian Mundubile says he will move a Motion of Censure against Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo Phiri for telling lies in Parliament over the mealie- meal situation in the country.

He said he was disappointed that a 25kg bag of mealie- meal in Mafinga District, Muchinga Province, currently costs K450 while border towns on the Copperbelt recorded shortage of the staple food.

Mr. Mundubile, a PF Presidential Candidate, said it was widely expected that the Legislature should provide checks and balances against the Executive under the doctrine of separation of powers comprising of the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary.

“One important question Zambians are asking is that did Legislature provide sufficient checks and balances regarding mealie meal and maize? The answer is yes,” he said.

Mr. Mundubile said Parliamentarians openly raised concerns regarding the continued export of maize to other countries but the Executive remained adamant.

“Our view is that whilst there is a provision for Censure of Ministers through a Motion in Parliament, I wish to inform the Nation that when Parliament resumes business, we will move a Motion of Censure against the Minister of Agriculture,” he said.

He said the Agriculture Minister provided inaccurate information on the Floor of the House that Zambia was food secure but the country suffered a staple food crisis a week later.

“Honourable Mtolo Phiri misled the Nation on the Floor of the House. As opposition political parties we will move that Motion so that he can be Censured on the Floor of the House. But we feel that is not enough,” he said.

Mr. Mundubile said Parliamentarians would propose stiffer measures under the Standing Orders so that the Executive remains responsible when handling matters of national importance.

He said citizens saw Health Minister Sylvia Masebo almost get away with it when she went several times on the Floor of the House to assure the Nation that the country had enough drugs in hospitals when people were dying all over the country due to shortage of drugs.

“The shortage has continued up to today. We will propose to Parliament to introduce in our Standing Orders stiffer sanctions to Ministers that come on the Floor of the House and mislead the Nation. We will start with the Minister of Agriculture in this particular case, using the existing Standing Orders, to move a Motion of Censure,” he said.

Mr. Mundubile said the Lawmakers would ensure that Parliament remains effective in providing the necessary checks and balances.

“Parliament should be able to serve the Zambian people by ensuring that we stop certain things from happening. If Parliament was operating effectively, we should have stopped these food shortages,” he said.
