Nearly 68 million people reeling from drought in Southern Africa: Official

Tens of millions of people in Southern Africa are suffering the effects of an El Nino-induced drought, a regional bloc has warned, with a drop in crop and livestock production causing food shortages in several countries.

Elias Magosi, executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), said on Saturday that 17 percent of the region’s population – some 68 million people – are in need of assistance.

“The 2024 rainy season has been a challenging one with most parts of the region experiencing negative effects of the El Nino phenomenon characterised by the late onset of rains,” Magosi said.

His remarks come as the heads of state of the 16-nation SADC were meeting in Zimbabwe’s capital of Harare to discuss regional issues, including food security.

Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia are among the countries in Southern Africa most affected by malnutrition caused by the drought, which began in early 2024.

Reporting from Harare on Saturday, Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa said the SADC nation leaders were likely to be discussing how to get more funding and food aid to affected countries.

“Crops are dying, it’s a huge problem,” Mutasa said.

In early June, the United Nations World Food Programme highlighted the dire effects of the drought, particularly on communities already vulnerable to food shortages.

“Rural communities we have met on the ground tell us they have never seen anything like this. They are extremely worried about their future,” said Reena Ghelani, the UN climate crisis coordinator for the El Nino response.

Southern Africa saw its driest February in 100 years, the UN said, receiving only 20 percent of the usual rainfall. Temperatures were also several degrees above average.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said late last month that extreme heat fuelled by the climate crisis was “increasingly tearing through economies, widening inequalities, undermining the Sustainable Development Goals, and killing people”.

“We know what is driving it: fossil fuel-charged, human-induced climate change. And we know it’s going to get worse; extreme heat is the new abnormal,” he said.

Experts have warned that as the effects of climate change intensify, weather patterns are becoming more extreme with droughts, super-charged hurricanes, floods and wildfires affecting much of the globe.

Girls as young as 10-years-old are having babies in SA

Shocking statistics revealed recently that over 4,000 girls in the Eastern Cape have given birth in the past four months.

The Eastern Department of Health (DOH) said 97 of these girls were aged between 10 and 14.

The teenage pregnancy pandemic is something the departments of Health, Social Development and Basic Education said they were addressing.

However, other provinces – KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Gauteng – are facing the same challenges.

In the last financial year, statistics provided by the National Department of Health showed that KZN had the highest number of teenage pregnancies — 31,088.

A total of 2,716 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth between April 2023 and March 2024 around SA.

A staggering 610 girls were from KZN, followed by 395 in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng 430.

A total of 1,226 aged between 10 to 14 years had terminated their pregnancies.

However, experts say there are risks involved with girls becoming mothers at such a young age.

What are the dangers associated with girls giving birth as young as 10?

Professor Ismail Bhorat, president of the South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SASOG) said at the onset, pregnant teens and their unborn babies have unique medical risks.

Lack of prenatal care

“They are at risk of not getting the correct prenatal care, especially if there don’t have family support, which is often the case. The teenager who is pregnant often tends to hide the pregnancy until later in gestation and often misses critical screening periods,” Bhorat said.

“Prenatal care encompasses looking for medical problems in the mother that can impact the pregnancy, diagnose fetal anomalies, diagnose genetic problems and monitor the baby’s growth, dealing quickly with any complications that may arise,” he said.

“Prenatal vitamins, for example, folic acid is ideally taken preconception which is important in preventing certain birth defect such as spina bifida.”

In addition, he said pregnant teens have a higher risk of getting high blood pressure which is called pre-eclampsia.

Bhorat explained that the dangerous medical condition combines high blood pressure with excess protein in the urine, swelling of legs and hands and face (oedema) and organ damage.

“These medical risks affect the pregnant teen herself who may need to take medication to control the symptoms of the condition,” he said.

“This can also lead to disrupting the unborn baby’s growth and could also lead to further complications such as premature birth. The earlier the baby is born, the more risk there is of respiratory, digestive, vision, cognitive and other problems.”

Low birth weight

Bhorat said teenagers are also at a higher risk of having low birth-weight babies.

“This could be part of the placental disruption due to placental mediated disease like growth restriction or pre-eclampsia, or premature labour itself, where the baby has less time to grow in the womb,” said Bhorat.

“Small babies with respiratory problems at birth may need to be put onto a ventilator in a hospital’s neonatal care for help with breathing after birth.”

Birthing options

“Normal vaginal delivery may also prove a challenge in teen pregnancy, especially if the foetus is large for gestational age, and the pelvis may be disproportionately small for the fetal head — this is called cephalon-pelvic disproportion which is common in teens and often leads to a caesarean section.”

He further explained that pregnant teens may be at higher risk for post-partum depression.

“This can interfere with not only taking care of herself, but also the newborn, thus the crucial need for family support,” said Bhorat.

“All efforts by the health authorities should be made to combat teenage pregnancies, as the medical risks these teenage face is very high.”

Social Impact

Echoing similar sentiments was Professor Mergan Naidoo from The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Family Medicine.

He said teenage pregnancy has multiple risks associated with bio-psycho-social health.

He said, biologically, the impact on the teenager was a difficult labour due to an underdeveloped pelvis.

“There is also an increased risk of operative or assisted deliveries, anaemia, birth complications and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.”

He said these teenage pregnancies also lead to unplanned deliveries and abortions (both legal and illegal).

Naidoo said the baby risked low birth-weight, pre-term delivery, increased risk of infant death and child malnutrition.

Other factors included psychological trauma from termination of pregnancy, depression, PTSD, sleep disorders and anxiety.

“Then there is a social impact. The impact on the family, like social isolation and the stigma,” said Naidoo.

“Often the teenager leaves school and then becomes a young mother – dependent on family, a boyfriend and social grants. The child is often cared for by the grandmother, and that is associated with many problems.”

Lastly, Naidoo said long-term outcomes are often dependent on pregnancy experiences.

“Hypertensive disorder of pregnancies can lead to intracranial bleeds and a stroke-like syndrome,” he said.

“A traumatic delivery can cause damage to the female genital tract, illegal abortions can cause severe genital tract problems, and psychological trauma can have long-term sequelae (a condition which is the consequence of a previous disease or injury).”

But what interventions are being put in place?

The DOH said it had introduced a number of interventions, including over 1,000 Youth Friendly Zones in primary health facilities or public clinics across the country.

National DOH spokesperson Foster Mohale said this was done to create an enabling environment for young people, girls in particular, to access sexual and reproductive health services without feeling judged.

“These zones are managed by young nurses and doctors to make young people feel open to discuss their health needs without fear of being judged,” Mohale said.

“Some of these young mothers don’t have family support structures to look after the children when they go to school, this contributes to school drop-outs because teen mothers are unable to become caregivers and learners at the same time.”

Mohale said the Department of Social Development had also developed a programme called YOLO, targeting young people aged between 15 and 24, for the reduction of HIV infections and teenage and unplanned pregnancies.

Reasons for teenage pregnancy

In the Eastern Cape, alcohol abuse, a lack of adequate parental care, support and supervision, especially in child-headed families, were some of the reasons for high teenage pregnancy.

The Eastern Cape DOH said youth zones made it easier for the youth to access health facilities without having to wait in queues.

“The youth are seen in dedicated consulting rooms and are seen by younger nurses,” said spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase.

“They also get an opportunity to discuss their own issues and get more information on sexual reproductive health and rights services.”

He said the department also visited schools to provide integrated health services and education, which includes education and provision of sexual reproductive health and rights information.

This year, the DOH, together with the department of social development and education will provide Integrated School Health Services.

He said they will also be establishing the District Integrated School Health Task Teams in four outstanding districts -Amathole, Chris Hani, Nelson Mandela Metro and Sarah Baartman.

“The department can confirm that there is no shortage of condoms at our facilities. We continuously encourage sexually active people to use condoms whenever they have sex,” said Ndamase.

“It is important to note that teenage pregnancies are not a Department of Health or government issue, but a societal issue,” he said.

“As such, we are calling on everyone to play their respective roles so that we will be able to address this problem.”

Keeping pregnant teenagers in school

The Eastern Cape Department of Education said learners who were pregnant or are mothers, were given a tool kit to keep them in the school system.

“We want them to finish school,” said spokesperson, Mali Mtima.

He said the curriculum also spoke about teenage pregnancy.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the issue of social ills in our communities “worry us all”.

“Health, social development and education have to deal with these realities,” Mahlambi said.

“These issues don’t only disturb us in terms of our programmes, but lead to many of them not finishing school and giving birth to more children, and this becomes a burden to the purse of the government.”

Mahlambi said teenage pregnancies came at a huge financial cost to the State, where it had to disburse funds to these three key departments, saying, “It’s a vicious circle”.

Malema and EFF will survive

Since its inception, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has waged and survived many political battles with Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu side by side, until last week when Shivambu dumped the EFF for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, triggering questions as to who’s next to divorce the EFF.

Following the announcement of Shivambu and Manyi’s departure, EFF member of parliament Carl Niehaus expressed his frustration on X, and said that Manyi’s conduct lacked integrity.

“At a difficult time in your life the #CommanderInChief, @Julius_S_Malema, accepted you, embraced you in the @EFFSouthAfrica, and was good to you. This is not the way to say thank you,” wrote Niehaus.

In what appeared to be a reassurance by the EFF, its prominent leaders and employees, and many other influential members took to social media and pledged their loyalty to the party and its leader.

“I want to reassure the Ground Forces of the EFF – loyal, hardworking, disciplined, Ground Forces of the EFF, I am with you, and I will never turn my back against this organisation…” CiC Julius Sello Malema,” wrote. Naledi Chirwa, a member of the National Council of Provinces.

Professor Cam Modisane also expressed his loyalty and said he would never leave the EFF.

Former Public Protector and now a Member of Parliament Busisiwe Mkhwebane also posted on X that the news she was leaving the red berets was fake. “I will never betray the fighters in my political home,” the post read.

However, questions about the state of the leadership remain as many attempts continue to be launched in efforts to unearth the reasons that may have motivated the recent resignations.

Last month, EFF National Organiser Patrick Sindane and veteran Kenny Motsamai, former EFF MP, left the party to join the Patriotic Alliance.

Sindane said they did not make it to the EFF’s parliamentary list after being appointed to represent the party in the National Assembly.

However, the two asserted that they disagreed with the EFF’s open border policy, which permits travel between nations, primarily within the continent.

Former EFF Ekurhuleni regional Treasurer Carol Mafagane and now a member of the MK party in parliament, left the party last year and joined the eight-month-old party.

As some of the reasons leading to the dumping of the EFF remain, various independent political analysts including Lukhona Mnguni weighed in and said it was too early to fully understand what led to the resignations.

“Whether there will be a mass following in terms of Shivambu supporters and members of the EFF or there will be a gradual shift of the EFF towards MK party will be seen in December to elect a new leadership of the EFF that will be given a mandate,” Mnguni said.

Meanwhile, Independent Political analyst and lecturer at the University of Limpopo, Dr Metji Makgoba, said Shivambu’s resignation could be linked to his leadership aspirations within the EFF and that this would hurt the EFF.

“He has strong academic and political credentials that will be felt wherever he goes. Within the left, he is a respected thinker who reads and is articulate. He is also abrasive and has a strong personality.

“However, the EFF has established itself throughout the country. While the departure of Floyd will hurt the EFF, they have managed to build a solid movement. The only problem is that they are now competing for the same space with the MK even though it is barely left.”

Professor Sipho Seepe said that this was a political setback for the party but believed that Malema and his party would survive this.

In an emotional press briefing on Thursday, probably the first of its kind in the red berets movement, Shivambu shockingly confirmed the rumours of his divorce from the party he once called his political home, saying he would now join and participate in the activities of the MK party.

This left the country in shock as the pair appeared inseparable considering the decades of “bromance” which saw them rise to prominent political players in the country, dating back to their days in the ANC Youth League before establishing the EFF after they were expelled from the ANC.

Shivambu was joined by the spokesperson of the Jacob Zuma Foundation Mzwanele Manyi, who also left the EFF to reunite with his boss at the MK Party.

A visibly emotional and disappointed Malema said, during the press briefing announcing Shivambu’s resignation, that he expected an increase in the number of people to abandon the EFF and align themselves with the MK Party.

He further described his final meeting with Shivambu as the last supper, expressing dismay over his decision to leave the EFF.

EVs are starting to overtake gas-powered cars in a surprising place

Long lines have been forming at gas stations in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, amid fuel shortages and a price spike in recent months.

But electric vehicle driver Mikial Belayneh avoids them completely.

“I no longer line up for petrol on the road,” Belayneh, an Addis resident, told CNN. A full charge of his imported Toyota bZ4X – a popular EV in the country – “is more than enough for two days.”

Belayneh, who charges his car at home, is part of rapid transition to EVs in Addis Ababa, a fast-growing city in the horn of Africa at the center of Ethiopia’s goal to hoist millions of people out of poverty.

In addition to the polluting cars and trucks rumbling along the roads, cleaner — and quieter — vehicles are joining the traffic. Electric buses, smaller 15-seat minibuses, cars and motorbikes are popping up on the streets of the capital.

There are around 100,000 EVs in Ethiopia so far.

The Ethiopian government estimates that number will more than quadruple by 2032. That’s largely because the national government took the extraordinary step earlier this year of banning the import of all gas-powered passenger vehicles — becoming the first nation in the world to do so.

It also effectively slashed the customs tax on imported cars: The tax on gas vehicles was up to 200% before they were banned, while the import tax for fully assembled EVs is just 15%, according to the country’s finance ministry.

It’s part of a government-led effort to get more EVs on the streets.

The lower rates are also spurring more local EV manufacturing. Hundreds of the vehicles were assembled by Ethiopia-based Belayneh Kindie Group using parts imported from China. Besufekad Shewaye, manager at the company, told CNN that import tariffs are “almost zero percent” for EV parts that are assembled in Ethiopia.

“Nowadays most vehicle owners prefer EVs, especially light vehicles,” Shewaye said. “The demand is increasing from day to day.”

A rapid shift from gasoline

Ethiopia is leaning hard into EVs in part because importing fuel is expensive, and 96% of the country’s electricity comes from clean hydropower – a dual win for the country’s finances and the environment.

“They really are a clean-energy country,” said Jane Akumu, a Kenya-based program officer at the United Nations Environment Programme. “Why are you importing oil while you have local electricity that you can actually use for your vehicles?”

The government recognized it had a bountiful renewable energy source in the country when it started shifting towards EVs, said Assefa Hadis Hagos, a transportation adviser for the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

Yet the total ban on gas-powered car imports, passed in January, took many in the region by surprise. “We didn’t know that the government was going to fully back a total ban,” Akumu said.

Ethiopia, which has for years been ruled by a one-party authoritarian government, has shown it can quickly implement environmental policies that would likely take longer in more democratic nations. In the early 2000s, the nation moved rapidly to ban inefficient and dangerous leaded gasoline.

“Other countries require more consultative process, more participation,” said Akumu, who also spearheaded the effort to eradicate leaded gasoline in Africa.

The number of cars on the road in Ethiopia is still quite low, about 1.2 million in total — or one car per 1,000 people.

In the US, more than 91% of Americans own at least one car. In Africa’s most populous of country Nigeria, it’s 11.8 million cars total, or about 54 cars per 1,000 people. The Ethiopian government had kept car ownership rates low with its dramatically high taxes on gas-powered vehicles that cost consumers up to three times the value of car imports — part of an effort to get more people to use public transportation.

Even though the government has reduced or eliminated some of the taxes for imported EVs, buying an electric car is still expensive. “In terms of who is buying EVs, it’s definitely those in the high-income groups,” said Iman Abubaker, who is based in Ethiopia and works on sustainable transportation for the World Resources Institute, a global nonprofit organization.

For this reason, Abubaker’s group and others are working to push the Ethiopian government and others around the continent to invest more in electric buses and public transport, so the efficient vehicles can be used by people of all income levels.

Despite the cost, Ethiopia’s vehicle fleet has seen a gradual but sustained rise in the number of EVs displacing combustion engine cars. Within two years of the country’s 10-year goal to bring in more than 100,000 EVs — started in 2022 — EVs already account for nearly 10% of its vehicles, according to CleanTechnica.

Ethiopia’s government “feels good” about the pace of the transition, Hagos, the transportation advisor, told CNN. He added the government has a “commitment” to reducing climate and environmental pollution from gas cars.

EV buses and boda bodas

For now, Ethiopia stands alone in its ban of imported gas cars. The country’s ban is “definitely a one-off,” said Moses Nderitu, the Kenya managing director of electric bus company BasiGo.

But EV growth around the continent is happening even without such bans. In Nairobi, Kenya, electric motorbikes are seeing startling growth. Last year, Uber rolled out a fleet of eye-catching yellow motorbikes – known locally as boda bodas.

After the Kenyan government passed tax incentives, there was a 500% jump in electric motorbikes on the road in a single year, industry experts told CNN, going from the low hundreds to about 3,000 bikes on the streets of Nairobi.

That number is still a small fraction of the 200,000 total bikes on Nairobi’s streets, but it has already helped cut down on noise pollution in parts of the city, said Hezbon Mose, the Kenya country director for e-bike company Ampersand, which has fleets of bikes in both Kenya and Rwanda.

In the Ethiopian capital, stricter measures, which include the non-issuance of licenses for fuel-run motorbikes, have been implemented by the city’s authorities who approved a timeline in April for gasoline motorcycles to be converted to electric-powered models.

Earlier in March, the city introduced its first fleet of electric buses for public transit.

American-style electric public buses — more drab than the colorful and music playing gas-powered matatu buses in Kenya — are also starting to be driven more on Nairobi streets.

Both Mose and Nderitu see EVs on the rise across the continent, as some countries look to get off oil in favor of cheaper electricity. Much more infrastructure and government subsidies are needed in many countries to get more people to go electric.

“I look at electric vehicles exactly as we looked at the mobile telephone market 30 years ago,” Nderitu told CNN. “When the rest of the world started adopting mobile phones, there was no infrastructure (in Africa). There was a very small amount of people who were connected to phones. Today you look at Nairobi, you hardly find anybody without a phone.”

Eswatini magistrate grants request from SA to extradite AKA “killer” brothers

Two men that are accused of being a part of the crew that waylaid and assassinated rapper AKA are set to be returned to South Africa for justice, after a court in the Kingdom of eSwatini granted an order authorising their extradition.

AKA was shot and killed alongside longtime friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane on February 10 last year outside a Durban restaurant.

Brothers Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande were arrested in eSwatini last year and charged with the murders of the two celebrity friends.

After a legal battle that had stretched over the last few months, principal Magistrate David Khumalo at the Manzini Magistrates Court ruled that the two did not need to worry about their safety, as he did not believe that they were under threat from the entirety of the South African Police Services (SAPS).

The pair had claimed that their lives were in danger from members of the force.

“The affidavits submitted to the court show that these threats are not entrenched in the entire police institution. Now one of the heads informed the court that he carried out investigations as soon as he heard the court mention the threats, and a special unit was set up for purposes of this investigation.

“We are also assured that once the investigation is complete, the culprits will be brought to book,” he said.

Khumalo said that he has been assured that the two would receive adequate protection once in SA.

“All the police heads, including those of Correctional Services, have assured us that the respondents will be given maximum security in their transmission to South Africa. This means that the fears of the respondents have been addressed.

“This court has added an additional safety measure to order the South African human rights commission to ensure respect, safety, and protection of the rights of the respondents as they go back to their country. Finally, the application to extradite is granted,” Khumalo said.

The two brother’s co-accused, Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Zenzele Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Lindo Ndimande recently appeared at the Durban Magistrates Court, where Magistrate Vincent Hlatshwayo allowed the state’s plea to postpone the matter to the 29th of November to complete ongoing investigations.

Ex-wife of Micheal Schumacher’s brother complains after he came out as g@y years after ending his 14 year marriage

Cora Schumacher, ex-wife of former Formula 1 star Ralf Schumacher, who is also brother to legendary F1 racer Michael Schumacher, has claimed she ‘feels used’ after he came out as g@y in July.

The pair were married for 14 years and share a son, David, who is also a racing driver. They split in 2015.

Ralf Schumacher, revealed he was in a relationship with his French business manager Etienne on social media last month.

I felt used and wasted my best years – Ex-wife of Micheal Schumacher

Cora who found out about the affair over social media, believes she was psychologically manipulated by Schumacher during their marriage.

'I wish Ralf had included me or at least let me be part of his decision. It would have been a sign of respect,' she told Der Spiegel, via Marca.

'During his career in F1, there were many rumours in the paddock. I asked him to clarify if what was being said was true, but he always denied it, telling me that I was imagining everything and that maybe I needed psychological help.

'When he announced it, it was like a stab in the heart. Coming out always affects those around you, including the ex-wife with whom you had a child.

'Today I feel used during the marriage. I feel like I've wasted my best years. I ask myself many questions. Was he honest with me?

'And there's something even more important that's on my mind: did he love me? I trusted him blindly and that's why his word was law for me.'

I felt used and wasted my best years – Ex-wife of Micheal Schumacher

Ralf Schumacher, 49, has been with his gay lover Etienne for two years having met in Monaco, according to Carmen Geiss, an actress and close friend of the couple.

His son, David, 22, shared his support for his father on social media when he revealed he was homosexual.

'I am very happy that you have finally found someone with whom you really feel that you feel very comfortable and secure, no matter if they are a man or a woman,' he wrote.

'I am 100 per cent behind you dad and wish you all the best and congratulations.'

Cora and Ralf got married in 2001, had a son that year, and were together for 14 years.

She is a former GQ cover star and is still a big television personality in Germany.

Lebron James dethrones Michael Jordan as greatest of all time, according to HoopHype’s new ranking

Lebron James has now edged the great Michael Jordan according to HoopsHype’s 78 greatest players ever list, after his exploits at the Paris 2024 Olympics and his consistency in his professional career.

Many believed Jordan to be the greatest NBA player of all time prior to James’ achievements in recent years, yet the tables seemed to have massively turned in favor of the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist and MVP.

According to the new 78 all time ranking of HoopsHype.com, James is now elevated to the best in the history of men’s basketball, yet he often sat in the top five, particularly in second place.

“For the fourth consecutive year since the league released its NBA75 list, we’re updating our GOAT rankings, adding a 78th player as we leave the league’s 78th season behind,” wrote HoopsHype.

“This one comes with a momentous update at the top, one that will irk many and delight many others (especially on the younger side). For the first time, Michael Jordan, the unassailable GOAT for so many years, doesn’t hold the No. 1 spot in our ranking. This shift follows a season in which LeBron James remained one of the premier players in the league, and was actually the best on a star-studded Team USA and the Olympic tournament as a whole,” they continued.

On how the ranking is determined, HoopsHype wrote: “As in previous years, we held a team vote with the opinions of eight HoopsHype staff members, discarded the highest and lowest ranks for each player, and awarded points based on the remaining positions.”

So what changed for the 39-year-old Akron native?

According to HoopsHype, James is still considered one of the best in the world competing at the highest level after two decades in the NBA, and is the legitimate candidate to be considered the greatest basketball player ever.

King James’ longevity speaks for him, yet the invincible Michael Jordan still sits right behind him after being number one for many years, leaving an incredible legacy in the NBA and for team USA in international tournaments.

The report indicates that James has four NBA titles to his name, four MVP awards, four MVP most valuable player awards, 13 All Star NBA 1st team selections, one NBA Cup, one NBA Cup MVP, three Olympic gold and one bronze medal across four different Olympic tournaments.

James is also the 1st in scoring in NBA history, 4th in assists, 8th in steals, 30th in rebounds, and 81st in blocks and also has 20 All-Stars selections in the game’s history.

His consistency remains the most remarkable aspect of the quality he has shown over the years in basketball, as in his 21st professional season, the 39-year-old made his 20th All-Star appearance and clinched his 20th All-NBA selection while adding another gold medal in style at the just-ended Paris 2024 Olympics.

The excellence sustained by James and his elite competition at his age transcends that of the great Michael Jordan who now drops to second place on this list.

Like James, Jordan also had quite the haul of medals and accolades in his career. He won six NBA titles, was awarded MVP six times in finals, had five MVPs, 10 All-NBA 1st team selections, 14 All Stars, one Defender player of the year award, nine All-Defensive 1st Team selections and two Olympic gold medals with the USA.

Jordan was also not just one of Basketball’s greatest and iconic athletes, but was arguably considered one of the best sports athletes of all time, and his clutch ability to decide games on his own with good defense traits is one for the new generation to emulate and remember.

The gap between the two greats is of little margin, but James is still featuring in Basketball and will be eyeing further glory as he looks like he is not slowing down any time soon.

Jordan however revolutionized the game at his time at Chicago Bulls, leading the NBA scoring chart for 10 seasons and sits on the table of the United States Hall of fame while also partnering and endorsing several world known brands like the Nike Air Jordan sneakers.

He is also the first billionaire NBA player in history, but most of these records and accolades he held have now been attained by James, whose career looks to be the most consistent in the eyes of many.

Prince William does not want disloyal Prince Harry at his coronation

Heir to the UK throne, Prince William does not want Prince Harry at his coronation, a Sunday Times article published on Saturday, August 17 to mark Harry’s 40th birthday in September, claims.

After quitting his job as a working royal and moving to California in 2020, Harry aired his family’s dirty laundry in his and wife Meghan Markle’s 2021 interview with Oprah, their “Harry & Meghan” Netflix docuseries, and his tell-all memoir, “Spare.”

He’s estranged from his brother as well as their father, who became monarch after Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022.

The Duke of Cambridge, 42, reportedly told everyone that he wants his crowning which will happen after his dad King Charles III, 75, dies to “look and feel different,” with one difference possibly being Harry’s absence from the ceremony.

William’s friends said that, as of now, William does not want Harry, 39, at the coronation.

“They are estranged, which is dreadfully sad,” one of the brothers’ closest friends reportedly said.

The friends also said William and Harry have not spoken in nearly two years.

“The problem for the King and other members of the family is the worry that if they have a chat with Harry, it will appear in ‘Spare’ volume two,” said one of Charles’ friends. “How do you regain the trust? I don’t think Harry ever can.”

“But from the conversations I’ve had with the King, I would never say their relationship is irreparable,” the friend continued.

“The King’s capacity to forgive his son is undimmed. There are other members of the royal family who are much more weighted against Harry, that’s the problem.”

“I can’t believe he’d stoop so low. It’s outrageously disloyal. Oprah, Netflix and then the book? Three strikes and you’re out,” the friend said.

A former aide to Harry revealed that the father of two doesn’t appear to have a “purpose” in life since moving away from the UK and falling out with his family.

Last month, Harry addressed his strained relationship with his family and blamed their unwillingness to fight against the press for their falling out.

“I think that’s certainly a central piece to it,” Harry said in an interview with ITV’s Rebecca Barry.

“But that’s a hard question to answer, because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press,” he added.

Kash Doll Calls Out Atlanta-Area ‘Community Leader’ For Labeling Her Home A ‘Drug House’

0

Kash Doll has called out an Atlanta-area man for reportedly telling local news that she runs a “drug house” after she was the victim of a home invasion.

In a video posted to her Instagram story and picked up by multiple outlets on Saturday (August 17), the Detroit native details the scary moment when her partner Tracy T, with whom she shares two young children, scared off would-be robbers who attempted to break into her home in the posh Atlanta neighborhood of Brookhaven.

t’s Black people that’s just running inside of people’s homes and tryna take their things. And what if my kids were there? What if my sister was there? What if my mom was there? What if Tracy was sleep and y’all caught him slippin’? They came in with guns!”

However, as she continues, the 32-year-old breaks down the additional injustice that prompted her to speak about the incident publicly.

“I’m putting y’all in my business today,” she continued, “because I’m so upset that Ronnie Mayers, the community leader over in Brookhaven and the block that I stay in because, you guys I stay in a nice neighborhood. Where I’m the only Black person on my block, and the youngest person on my block. And this man had the audacity […] he went to the news and told them that my house is a drug house.”

She went on: “Because it’s traffic and a lot of Black people there. Because it’s always traffic, he just assumed that since it’s nice cars and other Black nice successful people that’s pulling up, that’s entertainers, that’s friends, that’s producers that have nice things as well. And it’s a lot of traffic ’cause I have two kids under two, that I have drugs in my home?

“The sacrifices I make, how hard I work, everything that I do; for you to just associate me with drugs, just because I’m young, Black and successful. That’s crazy! That you went to the internet, no, you went to the news my n-gga and told the news that me and my child’s father is running a drug house.”

According to Rough Draft Atlanta, a man named Ronnie Mayer — whose photos match a later image shared by Kash Doll — is known to others in the community as “the unofficial mayor of Brookhaven.”

Multiple local news outlets reported on the attempted home invasion at Kash Doll’s house, which took place late on Thursday evening (August 15).

According a statement provided to these outlets by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations the homeowner, simply identified as a woman, saw four armed men inside of her home thanks to surveillance cameras. She told officials that she contacted “a friend,” later identified as Tracy T, who headed to the house and confronted the intruders.

There was a brief shootout, after which the suspects fled the scene in a Lexus. The vehicle was spotted by a Brookhaven police officer who was responding to the crime scene, which led to a police chase.

The vehicle eventually crashed in the neighboring city of Chamblee, at which point all four suspects jumped out. One of the men, 19-year-old Albert Eugene Burns, was shot by police officers.

He was later apprehended and rushed to the hospital. Two other suspects, 22-year-old Davion Harper and 18-year-old Tyson Kamari Kirksey, were also taken into custody; while an unnamed fourth man remains at large.

Libya’s central bank halts operations after kidnapping of IT director

The regulator on Sunday said it wouldn’t resume work until its director is freed
Libya’s presidential council on Sunday said it was replacing the central bank’s governor and board, setting the stage for a new political showdown after the regulator announced it was halting operations due to the kidnapping of one of its senior employees.

The presidential council, an internationally-recognized governing body based in Tripoli, said the unanimous decision to replace Governor Sadiq Al-Kabir and the board was aimed at “guaranteeing financial and economic stability,” according to a statement. The council didn’t mention the central bank’s decision to suspend operations in its statement.

The regulator earlier Sunday said it wouldn’t resume work until Musab Maslam, its director of information technology, is freed and back at his post. Maslam was snatched by an unidentified group in front of his home early Sunday, it said on its Facebook page, demanding that authorities step in and put an end to the climate of threat under which it operates. Local media reported he was later released.

The decisions by the council and the bank were likely to further stoke tensions in an OPEC nation that’s known little but chaos for over a decade. The country, which sits atop Africa’s largest proven reserves of crude, is split between rival administrations in the west and the east and frequent clashes are common despite a 2020 United Nations-backed cease-fire deal aimed at ending the fighting.

The central bank has itself fallen victim to the political tensions, with dueling institutions in Tripoli and in Benghazi in the east vying for control of the country’s oil wealth.

A 2021 reunification agreement that brought the two institutions together was hailed as a milestone for the troubled North African nation. Aside from that, however, little progress has been made on reconciling rival governments and armed groups.

Al-Kabir and the central bank didn’t immediately respond to calls for comment, and it was unclear if he would abide by the presidential council’s decision. In the past, other officials who were fired from their posts often refused to leave, triggering prolonged and often fatal clashes.

In explaining its decision to suspend operations until the employee was released, the central bank said on its Facebook page that “such practices threaten the security of the Bank employees and the ability of the banking system to continue functioning.” It also called on authorities to intervene, adding that other officials had also received kidnapping threats.

Also Sunday, an unidentified group briefly besieged the bank’s headquarters, local media reported, in what was described as an attempt to force the resignation of Al-Kabir, who has faced criticism over the management of oil revenues and the state budget.

The US’s special envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, on August 12 said in a post on X that attempts to oust Al-Kabir were “unacceptable” and warned that replacing him “by force can result in Libya losing access to international financial markets.”

“Disputes over distribution of Libya’s wealth must be settled through transparent, inclusive negotiations toward a unified, consensus-based budget,” Norland said.

Beyoncé’s Mother Tina Knowles Reaches Divorce Settlement With Richard Lawson

0

Beyoncé‘s mother Tina Knowles is getting ready to send her ex-husband Richard Lawson on his way with one giant payment.

In Touch reports that Knowles, who filed for divorce last year, agreed to pay Lawson $300,000 as part of the terms of their settlement.

Beyond that, neither side will get any spousal support.

In addition, the settlement contains a non-disparagement clause, so neither Knowles nor Lawson will be able to say anything bad about each other, their children, or those childrens’ spouses.

Lawson was Knowles’ second husband. They married in 2015.

Knowles filed to split up the marriage in July of 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple share no children together.

At the time, “Ms. Tina” petitioned the court to terminate Richard’s ability to ask for spousal support, so he doesn’t ask her for money after the split.

She also requested that the court restore her legal name to Celestine Knowles, as she’d changed it to Celestine Lawson when she first got married.

Beyoncé has more positive things going on around her these days as well, including having her songs covered by a collection of notable Black country artists.

As part of Apple Music’s ‘Nashville Sessions’ series, Beyoncé Covered features Brittney Spencer, Tanner Adell, Joy Oladokun, BRELAND and more taking on hits that include “1+1,” “Drunk in Love,” “Irreplaceable,” “Sandcastles,” “II Most Wanted” and “Halo.”

“Beyoncé has opened a door that’s going to be really hard to close,” Tiera Kennedy, who’s also featured on the six-song playlist, told Apple Music.

Bey’s own country project Cowboy Carter has been a major success since its release in March. The album debuted atop the Billboard 200 tally with 407,000 equivalent album units in its first week, making for the biggest sales week of 2024 at the time – though it has since been one-upped by Taylor Swift’s latest effort.

Twenty three of the album’s 27 songs also made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, bringing the Houston native’s career total Billboard Hot 100 songs to 106. She is now just the 17th artist and only the third woman to score over 100 entries since the Hot 100 was launched in 1958.

Hon Batuke Imenda, Loyal and Experienced member of the UPND

0

From our inbox:

Hon Batuke Imenda, Loyal and Experienced member of the UPND

He took over the mantle of UPND Secretary General on 16th March 2021 taking over from Honourable Steven Katuka who was the United Party for National Development (UPND) Secretary General before being appointed National Chairperson and later deployed to the Republic of Namibia as High Commissioner.

And as a party that had just grabbed the governance system of the country through a resounding victory on 12 August, 2021, the UPND through Republican President Hakainde Hichilema who is also Party President, appointed Mr Imenda to continue as party Secretary General.

The aim obviously, was that Mr Imenda as Chief Executive Officer, should help the party to grow in structures, unite members and recruit new ones, and most importantly, pulling the masses towards sustainable social economic development without leaving anyone behind.

A political scientist, Luis Cano, in his 2023 publication titled “Your Role as Part Secretary General “ states that political parties appoint SGs who would later build trusting and lasting relationships with the political leadership and the grassroots.

He adds that a party SG should be an example of trust and transparency for the entire organisation and is someone that should carry the vision of the party and its president. The party culture starts with the standards set by the SG as Chief Executive Officer.

Being Secretary General of a party is, however, not the same in every political party. In some parties, it is merely an operational role concerned with the execution of the party’s political agenda, while in others, the role is highly political and the position can be seen as the next in line after the party’s president or chairperson.

Having looked at the UPND manifesto, critically and thoroughly reading its Cconstitution , the party’s vision is clear and that is of having a united and prosperous Zambia, with equal opportunities across ethic, religious and gender considerations.

Article 83 of their constitution thoroughly explains the functions of a Secretary General which, most of them include;

a) a).To keep minutes of all national management meetings and to be in Charge of the day to day administrative activities at the national headquarters, b) To Keep minutes and records of all NEC meeting, c).To implement all party programmes, to prepare reports on activities and  proprammes of all party organs.

Other functions include that of being chief spokesperson on party and specialised committees, liase with National chairperson on party programmes and most importantly, carry out duties assigned by the party president from time to time.

Now that we have looked at the functions and qualities of an SG in a political party let’s now look at Mr Batuke Imenda’s record since his appointment as UPND CEO beforein 2021 as you criticise him and call for his replacement.

From 1998 to 2021, UPND has had  seven SGs among them, the late Ben Tetamashimba, Bob Sichinga, and Patrick Chisenga, and Steven Katuka.

The likes of Ben Tetamashimba and Bob Sichinga, very talkative but with no direction, probably, that’s why they couldn’t even form government.

From 2021 to date , the country has had 48 by- elections out of which, Mr Imenda as SG, has managed to win the governing UPND 39, translating into 90% victory, while PF has gotten 6, Socialist Party 1, and independent getting 1.

Talking about experience, Mr Imenda is a long standing member of the UPND, who once served the party as Member of Parliament for Lukulu East Constituency from 2001 to 2006. In fact, he was the first UPND member of Parliament to scoop a parliamentary seat.

Education wise, Mr Imenda holds a BA and an MBA in Business studies. While in Parliament, he sat on the Committee on Estimates, Committee on health, Community Development and Social Welfare.

Mr Imenda was also Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication, Transport, works and supply.

His style of doing things is not based on negative narratives, he is focused on increasing numbers to the party that prepares for another massive victory in 2026 and this has already been seen by a huge number of defectors from the former ruling PF and other parties to UPND.

He has managed to drive President Hichilema’s call of no hooliganism to all party structures and Zambians are going by their daily businesses freely, something that the governing UPND should be proud of as Zambians appreciate them for such, among other things such as massive recruitment in in the health, education and Defence sectors. The increased constituency development funds that are timely realised to all the 150 constituencies is game changer for Zambians. The SG has also been seen inspecting and encouraging citizens to actively participate in the implementation of projects in many constituencies.

These defections are a writing on the wall in Western, Copperbelt, North Western, Eastern, Muchinga,  Southern and Central Provinces.

Indeed one may be itching to what sort of criteria are those cristisig his performance using to judge him and call for his replacement. Could it be tribal, they want no Lozi to be CEO of the ruling Party.

On the other side of the coin one would not be regarded mischievous if they are deep in thoughts as in maybe those that feel that they may not be adopted in 2026 could be the ones  fighting him for no credible reason.

It is also not wrong to think those fighting Mr Imenda have an agenda of championing hooliganism, corruption through illegal activities by party cadres, contrary to the President’s vision.

As things stand, Mr Imenda has done and is doing tremendously well, he is carrying the party and the President’s vision, the party is growing, by-elections are being won and party structures are intact.

Therefore, there’s no reason to call for his replacement unless one wants to crumble the party at such a critical moment. If it is “ not broken don’t fix it”

CONCERNS OVER KCM’S BOSS MALCOLM MEWETT A CALL FOR VEDANTA TO REEVALUATE LEADERSHIP

0

CONCERNS OVER KCM’S BOSS MALCOLM MEWETT A CALL FOR  VEDANTA TO  REEVALUATE LEADERSHIP.

The recent appointment of the new Chief Operations Officer at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has sparked significant concerns among the Zambian workforce, stakeholders and the broader community.

Malcolm Mewett’s actions since taking office reflect a blatant disregard for Zambia’s labour laws, and his management style has already begun to create a hostile work environment that undermines the very fabric of KCM.

Reports indicate that the chief Operations officer Malcolm Mewett has been frustrating employees with heavy-handed tactics, including the unjustified termination of senior personnel without the due benefits they have earned over years of service.

This behaviour not only violates local labour laws but also shows a lack of respect for the rights of workers who have been instrumental in keeping KCM operational through challenging times.

Such actions are not only unethical but also counterproductive, as they threaten to erode the trust and morale of the workforce, a key component of KCM’s success.

It is evident that the Chief Operations officer does not appreciate the value of teamwork or the importance of fostering a cooperative and supportive workplace environment.

Given the historical challenges Vedanta faced in Zambia, leading to their previous expulsion from KCM, they must reassess their latest leadership decision.

The current trajectory under this KCM Chief Operations Officer Malcolm Mewett’s leadership risks reigniting the hostilities that once forced Vedanta out, potentially jeopardizing their future in Zambia.

As Zambia approaches the 2026 elections, the political climate will undoubtedly play a significant role in the survival of foreign entities operating within our borders.

It would be wise for Vedanta and KCM to align themselves with the interests of the Zambian people rather than adopting an adversarial stance.

Being seen as a partner to Zambia’s growth and development will be critical to their long-term success in the country.

Therefore, we strongly urge Vedanta Resources to critically examine whether this Chief Operations Officer Malcolm Mewett is the right person to lead Konkola Copper Mine during this pivotal period.

We cannot dictate who Vedanta Resources decides to appoint as Konkola Copper Mine Chief Operations officer however, we can advise that it may be in Vedanta’s best interest to consider a leadership change, appointing someone more in tune with the local environment, someone who understands the delicate process that allowed Vedanta to regain control of KCM and who can navigate the complexities of operating in Zambia with respect and collaboration.

The Zambian people will not tolerate any actions that undermine our sovereignty or our well-being.

It is time for Vedanta Resources to show that they stand with us as a partner in development and not against us.

SOCIALIST PARTY MUST ACT FAST TO STOP THE HEMORRHAGE OF MEMBERS

SOCIALIST PARTY MUST ACT FAST TO STOP THE HEMORRHAGE OF MEMBERS

A KBN TV Editorial

It’s sad to see and read what’s happening in the Socialist Party (SP) today. We are witnessing mass resignations day in and day out. This is a matter of concern to everyone who loves democracy and multipartism in Zambia.

As a media house, we consider SP as a critical stakeholder in Zambia’s political space. We have hosted some senior SP leaders on our various platforms and we can confidently say SP has enriched political discourse through their critical and divergent views.

Like any other political party, SP must be allowed to survive and compete for a fair chance to lead the nation one day.
Over the years, SP has been one of the most promising political parties, participating in almost all Ward by elections countrywide. Since its launch, the party had attracted notable names that we had hoped would add value to the future of SP, only to see them resigning en masse lately.

SP is an important part of our political landscape and no one should celebrate its disintegration. It takes a lot of time, energy and resources to build a viable and saleable political outfit.

Given the strides the party has made since inception, it’s not a matter of debate, we need the SP voice in our politics and if its leader, Dr. Fred M’membe and his team want to lead our nation one day, they better begin with “charity begins” at home and address whatever is causing critical personalities to leave the party.

The SP leadership should do serious introspection and listen more than flexing the power muscle of firing and termination which has ended up triggering counter intuitive reaction of endless resignations.

Bembas say, “Umweo wamuntu, wabamukutwi ” – if you want to live long or make an impact, it takes listening to what people are saying. Those who have continued to resign from the party can’t all be wrong.

Almost every resignation letter we have seen and read has one thing in common. They have accused the top leadership of exhibiting intolerance and dictatorial type of leadership. If this was raised by one or two people, we would think they are just being malicious but the consistent reference to those allegations by everyone leaving the party signals that “apakomaila nondo, ninshipaliubulema.”

In order to save SP from total collapse, Dr. M’membe and his top leadership should heed the concerns of people and quickly address these issues. It’s very clear that something is broken and needs to be fixed urgently.

We know the Socialist Party in Zambia espouses ideologies from Venezuela, Cuba and to a certain extent Russia. It’s very clear that there’s an ideological clash with Zambia where our socialisation and ideological orientation is the democracy of the people by the people and for the people.

This is the only thing that Dr. M’membe and his team should fix. Give the power to run your party back to the people. They will stay feeling empowered as active participants, do the mobilisation for you and create a path for you into State House.

One thing that the SP leadership must realize is that everyone leaving the party has their own circle of influence and that’s why resignations are spreading from Copperbelt, Lusaka, Livingstone and other places across the country. It’s the influence of a bad report spreading like a wild fire or cancer..

We urge the SP leadership to act swiftly to stop the debilitating hemorrhage of its members or ignore our advice at their own cost.

“MILES SAMPA IS LYING, SATUNIA REGNA OWNED THE BUILDING, SOLD IT TO ZNBS”

“SAMPA IS LYING, SATUNIA REGNA OWNED THE BUILDING, SOLD IT TO ZNBS”

A Scribe aligned to UPND says Miles Sampa and Emmanuel Mwamba are lying that AfLife had just sold a building it owned to government at $10 million.

Sampa who is a member of Parliament for Matero in an article titled “Scandal after Scandal” disclosed that Government through Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) had bought the building that used to host MTN headquarters at $10 million from AfLife.

The Matero MP said AfLife was owned by people close to the people with authority in government. He said these people would have influenced this sell.

Sampa however raised the issue of conflict of interest and wondered whether they declared interest. He charged that the whole transaction smell it corruption wondering how ZNBS would spend such huge money to buy the property when it was struggling to manage a number of its current properties.

Sampa said the fact that the transaction involved public money he was raising the alarm. He challenged government to come out and explain this alleged transaction.

But in a rebatle, a Scribe aligned to UPND government hours later disclosed that the building in question was never owned by AfrLife but Satunia Regina who has sold it to ZNBS.

Below is his full article:

MAANU CENTRE IS NOT OWNED BY DIEGO CASILLI NOR AFLIFE; NEVER HAS.
By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

After some wild allegations made by Emmanuel Mwamba and Miles Sampa that AfLife was a shareholder of Zambeef Products Plc and had sold the Chiawa Farm to government, today Miles Sampa went ahead to claim that AfLife had just sold a building it owned to government at a cost of USD 10 million.

Interestingly, The Patriotic Front – PF page, which is said to be controlled and managed by Emmanuel Mwamba, alleged that this building was owned by Diego Casilli. And that somehow African Life Financial Services and Casilli connived to sell the said building to the government.

A casual search online and a few calls to people in the know shows that the said building, which is the former MTN HQ called Maanu Centre, is neither owned by Diego Casilli nor AfLife.

The building was owned by Saturnia Regna Pension Fund. Saturnia Regina is a client of AfLife. The two are not one and the same entity. Clearly this means this building is certainly not owned by Diego Casilli.

I repeat, the building has never been owned by Aflife. It was owned by one of their clients. That client is the one who sold it to ZNBS on an arms length basis from either Diego Casilli or AfLife. The latter two know nothing about the ownership and sale of the building. As things stand, that building belongs to ZNBS.

Last time, Daily Nation apologised to AfLife and it’s directors after wrongly reporting that they were shareholders of AfLife and also that AfLife was a shareholder of ZAMBEEF.

As things stand, Sampa today made allegations. He is likely to be asked to produce evidence to substantiate his claim. Same with the editors of the PF page. Sampa is the one who has to show the evidence of what he is alleging, including the paper trail and any evidence of impropriety. Without that he has to apologise. In fact, I hear AfLife are still waiting for his apology and that of Emmanuel Mwamba’s over the Zambeef saga. Otherwise, it seems the two gentlemen and PF mouthpiece are going to have to defend themselves in court.

ABOUT PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S ABSCONDMENT FROM THE 44TH ORDINARY SADC SUMMIT: THE REAL STORY – Sean Tembo

ABOUT PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S ABSCONDMENT FROM THE 44TH ORDINARY SADC SUMMIT: THE REAL STORY

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. A lot of people have questioned why President Hakainde Hichilema decided to abscond from the 44th Ordinary Heads of State Summit for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) that was held in Harare, Zimbabwe yesterday? This was especially strange given the backdrop that President Hichilema is the Chairman of the SADC Organ on Politics, Security and Defense, which is the most consequential sub-committee of SADC.

2. Well, from my standpoint, the reason was quite simple. The President was embarrassed. He was too ashamed to look his colleagues in the eye during the summit. Ashamed of what he recently did a few days ago which caused his fellow Heads of State in the region to unite and unanimously condemn his actions. So at the end of the day, Mr. Hichilema was faced with two options; attend the summit and endure the walk of shame in front of his peers, or abscond and become a laughing-stock among his peers. He was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. Ultimately, he chose his poison and decided to conspicuously abscond from the summit. The first time in SADC’s 44 year history that it’s Chairman for it’s most coverted portfolio of Politics, Security and Defense, has absconded from an ordinary summit.

3. But what is Sean Tembo talking about? Some might begin to ask at this point. Well, am talking about President Hakainde Hichilema’s ill-advised decision to close all three of the Zambia – DRC borders and bring regional trade to a sudden halt. Our country rarely makes international news these days, but last week it did. We were trending in the New York Times, Bloomberg, Financial Times, Reuters and CNN. And the narrative was quite uniform in all these international news outlets; that Zambia’s decision to shutdown all it’s three borders with DRC was radical and unwarranted.

4. But how did all this come about? You may ask. Well, it all started when the DRC Minister of Foreign Trade, Hon. Julien Paluku Kahongya issued a decree temporarily restricting the importation of certain products into DRC from Zambia, which included beer, soft drinks, tiles and specific earthenware products. According to the decree, this was based on the findings of a study that had recently been concluded by the DRC Ministry of Economy which found that these products from Zambia were bringing “imported inflation”.

5. The DRC Minister of Foreign Trade then proceeded to invoke article 6, paragraph 2 of the Bilateral Agreement between Zambia and the DRC which was signed on 6th August 2015, which provides that “an importing country can take anti-dumping measures which includes restricting the importation of certain products, if it finds that such products are being subsidized or are being sold at very low prices as to cause injury to the manufacturing industry of the importing country”. That is how Zambia’s exports to the DRC of beer, soft drinks, tiles and related earthenware products was halted.

6. However, in a typical fashion of incompetence, President Hakainde Hichilema decided to close all Zambia’s three commercial borders with DRC, in apparent retaliation to the DRC ban of specific Zambian imports. His lame excuse was that the borders were caused because of rioting that was taking place in the respective border towns. However, this excuse was lame because there was no evidence whatsoever of any riots. Additionally, this retaliatory action was undertaken without any declaration of a trade dispute with DRC, which put Zambia in conflict with World Trade Organization (WTO)rules on international trade, and therefore at risk of sanctions.

7. But more importantly, President Hakainde Hichilema’s radical decision to shutdown all of Zambia’s borders with DRC unnerved all the leaders in the SADC region for two main reasons. Firstly, Zambia is used as a transit corridor for trade between the southern part of Africa, and the east and central parts of Africa, meaning that the sudden closure of all borders with DRC would not only punish DRC, but would punish all countries in the region. Secondly, a decision to shutdown borders because of an apparent trade dispute is wanton and unprecedented. It has never happened in the region before. The most that a country can do is impose non-tariff barriers such as high toll fees for foreign vehicles. But not shutting down borders.

8. That is not to say there have been no trade disputes among SADC countries. Trade disputes have always been there. For instance, South Africa and Botswana are big trade partners, but they often quarrel on the issue of importation of fruits and vegetables. Often times, Botswana would ban the importation of fruits and vegetables from South Africa in order to protect the local industry. Similarly, Zimbabwe and South Africa are big trade partners, but they often quarrel on the issue of immigration. Oftentimes, undocumented Zimbabweans living in South Africa are deported en masse. But never has any of these bilateral trade disputes resulted in shutting down of borders between countries.

9. And then you have Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema, who is not just an ordinary member of SADC, but it’s Chairman for the Organ on Politics, Security and Defense. The person who is responsible for resolving disputes among SADC countries, is in fact in the forefront creating disputes. How could he surely go and meet his colleagues in Harare and look them in the eye, after such wanton behavior and clearly poor judgement of shutting down the borders? Of course he could not. He had to stay home and wallow in the shame of his poor decisions. But even that soon proved futile. The burden of shame was too much to keep chewing on, alone at Community House. So while his colleagues were meeting in Harare at the 44th Ordinary SADC Heads of State Summit, our Head of State was getting some fresh air in Chiengi.

10. But is there anything that Zambia can do regarding the DRC’s decision to ban the importation of our beer, soft drinks, tiles and related earthenware products? As a matter of fact, yes. The first step is to formally declare a trade dispute using the established diplomatic channels. And if the matter is not amicably resolved, we can invoke article 9 of the Bilateral Agreement and take the dispute to arbitration. Am quite confident that the arbitration would go in our favor because the DRC actions in this matter are actually contradictory. You see, according to the decree by their Foreign Trade Minister; Hon. Julien Paluku Kahongya, he says that a study by their Ministry of Economy found that the banned Zambian products were bringing in “imported inflation”, meaning that the prices kept going up everytime they imported. However, when you look at article 6, paragraph 2 of the Bilateral Agreement between Zambia and the DRC which was signed on 6th August 2015, which DRC relied upon for it’s ban of certain Zambian products, it provides that “an importing country can take anti-dumping measures which includes restricting the importation of certain products, if it finds that such products are being subsidized or are being sold at very low prices as to cause injury to the manufacturing industry of the importing country”. The question is; was Zambian beer being sold at very high prices so as to bring imported inflation to DRC, or it was sold at very low prices to constitute dumping as per WTO definition? It surely can’t be both. Those are the issues which our Government was supposed to be pursuing. If we had a competent Government.

Miles Sampa IS A LIAR, SAYS ZAMBIA NATIONAL BUILDING SOCIETY BOARD CHAIRMAN AS HE ORDERS MANAGEMENT TO INSTITUTE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THE MATERO MP

Dear Madam Managing Director.

It is with surprise and dismay that I have read this story regarding the purchase by Zambia National Building Society of the building at Addis Ababa round about. The misrepresentation of facts is amazing. This in itself is proof that most of the alarming stories coming from the opposition leaders are meant to mislead the general public, and they totally lack any merit. This story is totally misleading, and it should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.

That is the reason the IMF stated a few days ago that there is too much politicking in Zambia at the expense of National development, when refuting a similar story that Government, through IDC has been forced to sale Mulungushi Conference Centre, and other assets. Yet this is not the case.

There is also the alleged purchase of Zambeef farm by the government, which story is also not exactly correct. I think the opposition have run out of ideas, and they are now witch hunting by trying to create fake stories meant to discredit the government.

Now, Madam MD, kindly sit down with your colleagues and prepare a comprehensive response refuting these allegations as baseless and give the correct picture regarding the purchase of that building. Make sure you indicated how Society House was sold and how you were given authority by the Board to purchase another building to compensate for the sale of Society House. Also, give timeliness of these transactions. Indicate clearly that this was purely a prudent business decision devoid of government interference. Point out also that the Society is well managed and that at some point, you actually declared a dividend. Challenge Miles Sampa to retract this statement and find out from SS if we should threaten him with legal action. Please come out very strongly in clearing the air, and I know we are standing on firm ground. The statement should come out immediately in most media outlets, including socail media., You should work tomorrow Sunday and get all the facts and figures so that you put the record straight.

I have no doubt in my mind that we shall prevail over this matter and shame the agitators of this fake story. Should you need further guidance, please do not hesitate to reach me on this same WhatsApp number. I am currently in Ekaterinburg, Russia, but I will make myself available 24/7 as we fight to dispel this fake story and protect the image of our shareholders.

With regards
Geoffrey Samukonga
Board Chairman

ZAMBIA’S TALLEST BUILDING SOLD

HICHILEMA’S GOVERNMENT SELLS SOCIETY HOUSE IN DEFIANCE OF THE LAW

“We have sold Zambia’s tallest building Society House. That’s why we bought  Elunda Park building ” Jeff Samukonga, ZNBS Board Chairperson

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

I have seen an article by my dear brother Matero MP, Miles Sampa alleging that Zambia National Building Society has bought Manu Centre (Elunda Park) located at Addis Ababa round-about for a princely sum of $10million.

I have also seen correspondence being circulated by UPND bloggers alleged written by ZNBS Board Chairperson, Jeff Samukonga, written to his Management asking the MD to refute the Miles Sampa story or put context and timelines to the purchase of Manu Centre building.

Samukonga also confirms that ZNBS has since sold the iconic Society House, Zambia’s tallest buidling, and in compensation, has bought Manu Centre.

Now both facts from Miles Sampa and Jeff Samukonga are extremely alarming and elicit a scandal of huge proportion.

Society House recently underwent major rehabilitation and redevelopment that cost $100million. It saw the creation of a business park, a mezzanine car park and establishment of a five star hotel. ZNBS partnered with NAPSA for this huge investment.

Article 210(2) of the Constitution forbids the sale of major State Assets without Parliamentary aporoval.

Article 210 (2) of the Republic of Zambia states that; (2)

” A major State asset shall be sold, transferred or otherwise. disposed of, as prescribed, subject to the approval of the National. Assembly signified by a vote of at least two-thirds of the Members.”

Secondly Manu Centre is or was owned by the private pension Fund, Saturnia Regna.

Saturnia Regna is owned by Benefits Consulting Services Limited (Bencon) and fund administrators, Africa Life Financial Services (Aflife), both of which are under the common ownership of Menel managements Services Limited whose shareholders are Munankupya Hantuba,( President Hakainde Hichilema who booked out of the shareholding in 2019), and Valentine Chitalu partnered by Botswana Insurance Fund Managers.

So the contraversial arguements of African Life Insurance and Saturnia Regna obtaining government businesses without deckaration of interest because of their proximity to President Hakainde Hichilema becomes the issue here, as was Government’s interest in the Zambeef Chiawa Estate Sale or the $40milloon Environmental Fund under the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Develooment awarded to AfLife, snd other businesses, arise.

Zambia National Building Society is a provider of mortgage, banking and property management services and is wholly owned by the Zambian Government and is the largest building Society in Zambia. It was established by the Building Societies Act of 1968 which was amended on 24th December 1970.

Bane if you have sold Society House, apa pena abena Zambia taba mileke!

CCTV was ‘faulty’ during August 2023 KKIA gold ‘scandal’

A JUDGE heard yesterday that during the infamous thwarted gold scandal at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) on August 13, 2024, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) had “a problem” at the airport.

A detective chief inspector who was part of the investigations team of an alleged aggravated robbery testified that he never viewed the CCTV during investigations.

Arnold Kawangu said this during trial in a case businessman Sederick Kasanda, alias King Shad, is charged with aggravated robbery involving US$5milllion.

Allegations are that on August 13, 2023, in Lusaka, Kasanda, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown and whilst armed with an offensive weapon namely a firearm, stole US$5,000,000 from Micheal Adel Michel Botros.

The incident happened at KKIA where law enforcers also impounded a plane that was carrying some Egyptians.

During trial yesterday, Mr Kawangu narrated that he was given a docket of aggravated robbery in which Mr Botros was a complainant.

He said the Egyptian complained that Kasanda and others, while armed with pistols, snatched his bag containing US$5million.

During cross examination, defence lawyer Clement Andeleki asked Mr Kawangu if he had sight of the CCTV since the airport is covered with the surveillance.

In response, the witness who works at KKIA police station said no.

“Why didn’t you bother to ask for the CCTV footage?”, Mr Andeleki asked.

“Because during the interviews, I came to learn that there was a problem with the CCTV at the airport during this incident” Mr Kawangu said.

Asked if he saw the pistols allegedly used in the robbery, the officer said no.

“So, if there were no pistols, how do you charge a person with aggravated robbery?” Mr Andeleki asked the witness responded that “I based it on what I saw in the docket”.

Asked to confirm that there is no complaint to date for aggravated robbery at KKIA police from Mr Botros, Mr Kawangu admitted.

“As a police officer with 18 years experience, is it normal for you to take up a case with no complaint?” Mr Andeleki asked.

“It’s not normal,” Mr Kawangu responded.

The court also heard that Mr Kawangu never went to the crime scene, a private hangar, where the alleged aggravated robbery happened.

“Is that normal for you to fail to go to a scene of crime where US$5million was alleged to have been stolen?” Mr Andeleki asked as the police officer said ” It’s not normal”

LAURA MITI VS SISHUWA SISHUWA

LAURA MITI VS SISHUWA SISHUWA

By Osward Bwali

Once upon a time Laura Miti, Fumba Chama, Sishuwa Sishuwa, O’brien Kaaba and several others, all worked in unison as activists or commentators to kick out of power the Patriotic Front, apparently for their governance failures. That’s as it should be.

Fast forward. The United Party for National Development has won the elections and formed government. Pilato has transitioned from a scruffy-looking critic of government to a dandy fresh-smelling permanent secretary. Miti and Kaaba sit on some government boards. Sishuwa now cuts a lonely figure. His criticisms of the UPND government are now often criticised by Miti and Kaaba as if choreographed to take the sting out of anything Sishuwa says against the government.

Recently, Kaaba was in the centre of a three-way public fallout with ACC boss and the Solicitor General. Kaaba’s cup of frustration apparently reached the brim with corrupt shenanigans involving the ACC boss and state chambers boss. Which shenanigans were averse to the effectiveness of the ACC board on which Kaaba sat.
Solicitor General sues Kaaba for libel – “a published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation”.

Kaaba responds, bring it on! He promises to “demonstrate before Court the truthfulness of my assertions”. Naturally, the court will decide which is which, exonerate the character of one and blemish the other. Before sunset, the two are holding hands, smiling ear to ear. The belligerents met over a jar of chibwantu and the legal bout of titans was called off. After all that flamboyant display at the weigh-in! No reason is given.

Laura is unhappy Muchende pulled out too quickly. After exciting her with his weigh-in antics, she had every right to vent her frustration. “I was quite looking forward to him clearing his name of the grave corruption charges advanced against him by the good doctor,” she lamented. From the outset, she’d been Kaaba’s cheerleader. As Miti and Kaaba are close friends or colleagues, one can only believe she had firsthand knowledge of Kaaba’s punching power, impregnable defence, and formidable uppercut to which Muchende stood no chance. She’d be treacherous or reckless to urge a friend into such a fight if she thought he didn’t have a great chance.

Sherlock Holmes would point out the intriguing fact that Miti exempted Kaaba from the blame for backing out of the bout. Because the consent agreement was mutual by both parties, she should have equally put blame on “the good doctor”. Especially we do not know the terms of the agreement, who pleaded with the other, and so on. If Kaaba prostrated before Muchende begging for his life because his charges were baseless or whatever, Miti may have to thank Muchende for sparing Kaaba’s life even at the cost of the cloud of shame now hanging over Muchende’s name due to Kaaba’s potentially libelous claims. Miti saw the agreement damaging to Muchende but not to Kaaba.

Enters the nemesis. Sishuwa saw things differently from Miti. Kaaba’s own name was muddied and in dire need of redemption. Kaaba was intimidated, bribed into silence, had no proper evidence in the first place, or persuaded to ceasefire by party or tribal elders. Citing public interest, Sishuwa thinks Kaaba was wrong to enter into the agreement and should avoid entering into similar agreements. Miti won’t take this one lying down. How dare you attack the good doctor, your colleague and equal, a board member at my Alliance for Community Action?

Miti finds faulty Muchende’s pull out but is okay with Kaaba’s. It takes two to tango. If Kaaba is the principal, Muchende is complicit. If Muchende is the principal in the agreement, Kaaba is complicit. Either way, they fall together. But by Miti’s dodgy logic, Kaaba remains with his integrity unblemished. One can’t help but ask Miti, as Andy Dufresne asked the corrupt prison chief in Shawshank Redemption, “How can you be so obtuse? …. Is it deliberate?”. But such is Miti. If Lungu said 2+2=5 he’d be a fool. But if Hichilema said 2+2=5, he’d be wise.

How can you accuse Kaaba of being motivated by tribalism? Well, Miss Miti, tell us the true motivation and shame the Devil. But wait, Sishuwa never said that. He offered disjunctive permutations. One or two or three or four. None, farfetched. Possibly all two, three, or all of them as the disjunction is inclusive rather than exclusive. Ethnicity is the principal organising principle in Zambia or Kenyan politics. Hichilema’s UPND is a reincarnation of Nkumbula’s ANC and PF of Kapwepwe’s UPP. Any ideological differences are secondary, incidental, and superficial.

Sishuwa doesn’t just pick the ethnicity possibilities out of thin air. He supports it robustly with Michela Wrong’s It’s Our Turn to Eat: The Story of a Kenyan Whistleblower that eerily and ominously anticipates UPND’s Zambia. Mwai Kibaki’s movement and electoral success rode on the anti-corruption banner. Like Hichilema’s. Both are keen to maintain the appearance of anti-corruption angels. Both achieve this through appointing mostly members of their ethnicity to the ACC, and the Governance and Ethics department in the Kibaki case. Both presidents are surrounded by tribesmen and those from cousin or ethno-political auxiliary groups, “with a few opportunistic ethnics tagging along for the ride.” In addition to giving some pretence of inclusivity. A few token outsiders can come in handy as useful idiots.

Anyone who reads Wrong’s book with an open mind will see the parallels and prophecy. Miti should read it. Even with a closed mind, one will see how the Kikuyu wazee forming the kiama – a council of ethnic elders, are in the thick of every corruption scandal. They manipulate young John Githongo and attempt to dissuade him from betraying the tribe by whistleblowing on the Kikuyu government. Put simply, ethnicity and corruption form a very tight knot.

Therefore, to highlight the possibility of an ethnic explanation for Kaaba’s sudden withdrawal is sensible. It is neither tribalistic nor does it commit any ad hominem fallacy. Not all ad hominem reasoning is fallacious. To call Miti “Amai Doti” is clearly ad hominem abusive, even if a counter to Miti’s own personal attacks on opposition leaders who include Saboi Imboela and Fred M’membe.

Sishuwa did not commit any ad hominem fallacy in so far as ethnicity is a potentially relevant consideration. It is immaterial whether Kaaba and Sishuwa are colleagues or academic equals. By thinking Sishuwa should not make certain guesses about Kaaba’s premature withdrawal, Miti reinforces Sishuwa’s guess regarding how Kaaba’s silence was bought. Some people, in fact, many people, think that tribesmen should not call each other out, at least not publicly. In the same way, Miti seems to appeal to collegial relations as reason not to call out possible wrong-doing.

Perhaps Sishuwa omitted an important possibility. Kaaba is one of the budding legal scholars in Zambia. Among his growing publication profile is a book on law of evidence in Zambia. So, when such a legal mind stands on an anthill and thumps his chest that he has a mountain of evidence of Muchende’s corruption, it is very likely there is a mountain of evidence. (For months now, Lusaka lawyer, Frank Gwaba has been complaining and daring Muchende over corruption). However, it may be this is corporate evidence of the ACC and not of Kaaba in his personal capacity. Going ahead with such evidence may potentially constitute professional misconduct that may attract possible censure from LAZ.

Under this scenario, the rational thing for Kaaba to do morally and for personal preservation is what he did. Kaaba has written intermittently about holes in Hichilema’s fight against corruption. This is laudable. It’s not Kaaba’s or Gwaba’s fault that Hichilema chooses to take Muchende’s side, for obvious reasons. Hopefully, the Muchende agreement does not incapacitate Kaaba in doing so in the future. What now?

Miti’s ACA was hyperactive and scathing against the PF. Sustained campaigns were mounted against perceived corruption and human rights abuses. Now ACA is subdued and confined to issuing sporadic, casual, if timid, statements about reports of corruption by the UPND. It seems clear that ACA is too close to the UPND with its director or board members being on boards and whatnot in the ruling government. This personal closeness compromises the organisation’s ability to offer effective and reliable checks and balances.

Perceptions of corruption count a lot in presidential elections. Perhaps, for Miti, a corrupt UPND with whom she’s friends, is better than a PF comeback in whatever form. She knows pointing out UPND corruption and lack of transparency aids the opposition, some of whom she loathes. She’d rather abet or ignore UPND corruption than indirectly improve chances of electoral success for the opposition. In contrast, Sishuwa seems not to exhibit such narrow partisan partiality, as human and fallible as he is. It can be a discomforting to those who will act noble when their personal interests align with ethical values but will abandon the values at the slightest conflict between abstract ideals and personal interest.

Thailand picks former-PM’s daughter now country’s new prime minister

0

Thailand’s parliament has chosen Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the 37-year-old daughter of billionaire and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country’s new prime minister.

Paetongtarn will be the youngest person ever to hold the office and the second woman to do so, following her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Her appointment follows the dismissal of former PM Srettha Thavisin by a constitutional court just two days earlier. Both Paetongtarn and Thavisin are from the Pheu Thai Party, which, despite finishing second in the 2023 elections, managed to form a ruling coalition.

Paetongtarn now faces the challenge of rejuvenating Thailand’s stagnant economy while navigating the political instability that has seen four previous administrations from her party ousted through military coups and judicial actions.

“I really hope that I can make people feel confident that we can build opportunities and to improve the qualify of life and to empower all Thais,” Ms Paetongtarn told reporters after the vote on Friday.
She was visibly overwhelmed, syaing her hands were trembling from excitement.

She acknowledged that she is “neither the best, nor the most talented one in the room”.
“But I always think I have a strong will and I have a good team… My team is strong, experienced, determined and we share the same ideas. That’s something I value highly,” she said.

Ms Paetongtarn, who received 319 endorsement and 145 against votes, is the fourth member of the Shinawatra clan to become prime minister in the past two decades.
The other three, including her father Thaksin and aunt Yingluck, were deposed by military coups or constitutional court rulings.
The same court dismissed Mr Thavisin on Wednesday for appointing to his cabinet a former lawyer who was once jailed.

On Friday, Ms Paetongtarn said she was “confused” and “very sad” to learn about Mr Srettha’s dismissal.
She decided it was “about time to do something for the party and for the country” after speaking to him and to her family, she said.

She mentioned that her father, Mr. Thaksin, called her to offer encouragement, urging her to “do your best” and expressing his happiness at being able to witness her take on the role in his later years.

Educated at prestigious institutions in Thailand and the UK, Paetongtarn Shinawatra worked for the Shinawatra family’s Rende hotel group, where her husband is the deputy chief investment officer. She joined the Pheu Thai Party in 2021 and became its leader in October 2023.

Her appointment infuses new energy into Thailand’s leadership. The Pheu Thai Party may be hopeful that her leadership will revitalize its political standing.

Thaksin Shinawatra first served as Thailand’s prime minister starting in 2001, but his second term was cut short by a military coup in 2006.

He returned to Thailand in October of the previous year, just before Mr. Srettha was elected as prime minister. His return was part of a major political deal with his former conservative opponents, who now form a coalition with Pheu Thai.

Facts and Myths of Africa

Kodak Black and Fivio Foreign have bizarrely linked up with presidential nominee Donald Trump for a new song

Kodak Black and Fivio Foreign have bizarrely linked up with presidential nominee Donald Trump for a new song.

While Trump does not actually get in the booth, “ONBOA47RD” uses a recording of his first speech made after the recent attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania.

“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” he says as a pounding drill beat plays in the background. “And I’m here today to announce a brand new plan to deliver more opportunity, more security, more fairness.”

The pro-Trump track also opens with audio from the former president’s 2017 inauguration where he declared: “I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never, ever let you down.”

While Fivio is light on the political bars, with his references limited to Trump calling him when he was “on tour,” Kodak salutes the former Apprentice star, who pardoned him from prison in one of his last acts as president.

“I ain’t even see this many black people freed during the Obama days / Told her she can anything she want, just not my Donald chain,” he raps, referencing the $10,000 gold Trump chain he copped in 2022.

Trump is a credited songwriter on the track due to its sampling of his speech.

Both rappers have previously been vocal in their support of the controversial Republican.

In 2019, Fivio Foreign rocked a MAGA hat and later commented: “I ain’t going against Trump.”

Kodak Black has been far louder in his cheerleading of Trump, even calling for him to be instated as the lifetime leader of the United States.

“We need Trump in office forever, man. Just like how them Chinese and Russian and Korean motherfuckers have their president,” he said on Instagram Live. “Trump the best thing for America, for sure. I respect that boy logic, setup and whole rundown even if he didn’t free me.”

“When you got muthafuckin; office for only like four years, that ain’t enough time for a n-gga to run they play and the shit they got to do,” he continued. “By the time they get done, another muthafucka in office and he fuck shit up. Man, give my dog a lil more time to do what he do for real.”

Trump has been experiencing a surge in popularity among various rappers this year including Sexyy Red, 50 Cent, Benny The Butcher, Waka Flocka Flame, Chief Keef and Lil Pump.

Like France, US Court Grants Chinese Company Order To Initiate Process To Seize Nigeria’s Assets

A court in the United States has granted an appeal sought by Zhongshan, the Chinese company which obtained an order to seize Nigeria’s presidential jets in France, an order to initiate a process to seize other assets of Nigeria abroad.

Recall a French court had granted the Chinese company orders to seize Nigeria’s European assets following a breach of contract between the company and the Ogun State government to develop a free trade zone.

As soon as the orders were granted, the Chinese company immediately initiated attempts to seize Nigeria’s private jets in Switzerland and France including a $100m newly acquired jet.

In the appeal in the US, Nigeria reportedly argued in vain claiming sovereign immunity, the same argument the Nigerian government put up on Thursday against the seizure of its jets in different jurisdictions in Europe.

The US rejected the sovereign immunity argument and subsequently authorised the Chinese consortium to proceed with its efforts to confiscate Nigeria’s assets abroad.

Records showed the court arrived at the decision on August 9, 2024, after judges in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in Washington found that Nigeria had indeed violated the agreement it entered with the Chinese firm to establish the trade zone agreement in Ogun state, Nigeria.

Court papers showed that Zhongshan approached the US Court in order to retrieve an arbitration award for breach of contract after initially winning their case in the United Kingdom in 2021 during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

The court in the UK awarded the Chinese company $55.6m in compensation and $75,000 in moral damages, alongside interest, legal and arbitration fees.

The UK court had ruled that the Chinese company had presented clear evidence which it noted was satisfactory and therefore awarded the company almost $60m against Nigeria.

The company moved to enforce the court judgement in the US forcing Nigeria to argue that it had sovereign immunity, which forbade the matter from being heard in a US court.

Unfortunately, the judge ruled that Nigeria is a signatory to the New York Convention, which allows arbitration between persons, which may include a sovereign entity.

Having lost out, Nigeria immediately filed an interlocutory appeal in the matter on April 22, 2024, court findings showed.

Unfortunately, two of the three-man panel voted in favour of the Chinese company granting approval that the case should proceed because Nigeria had lost its grounds for immunity when it joined Ogun in violating the contractual agreement.

The court stated that since Ogun lacked sovereign immunity as an entity in Nigeria and having offered Ogun a sovereign guarantee, the country is liable for any fallout and can be held liable for a breach.

The judges Patricia Millett and Michelle Childs, said in their majority decision that, “Whether the arbitration exception applies in this case therefore turns on whether a treaty—specifically, the New York Convention—governs the Final Award.”

They added, “We hold that it does because the Final Award arose from (1) a legal relationship, (2) that is considered as commercial, and (3) is between persons.”

In their final ruling, they stressed that, “Zhongshan and Nigeria shared a legal relationship because Nigeria owed Zhongshan legal duties under the Investment Treaty.”

However, the minority opinion from judge Greg Katsas, argued that the targeted assets also came under the country’s sovereign umbrella and so the country should not be denied that.

Nigeria has not issued any statement regarding the latest development from the US and reserves the right to appeal to the US supreme court.

In the event it fails to appeal or it appeals and fails, the matter can proceed in the lower court leading to a possible order to seize assets belonging to the country.

Meek Mill Addresses Michael Rubin’s Controversial Comments About Black Culture

Meek Mill has addressed recent comments from Michael Rubin about what he sees as a prevalence of “hate” in Black culture.

Appearing on The Breakfast Club earlier this week, the billionaire Fanatics founder was defending his friend and business partner Meek against claims that he’s gay when he made the controversial remarks.

“When I see the narrative of a really good friend of mine like Meek […] there’s not one gay bone in his body so why do people want to lie about that? Why do people want to change the narrative to try to hurt him?” he said.

“Look, I’m just being blunt because it’s me. It’s the one thing I’ve learned about Black culture that I don’t like: Black[-on-Black] hate […] It’s horrible.”

Rubin, who is also close with JAY-Z, Travis Scott, Lil Baby and other prominent Black entertainers, added: “You guys correct me if I’m wrong. I think there’s a little bit of a Black culture of, like, it’s Black hate-on-hate.

“I think it’s terrible. I think it’s culturally wrong […] Why do you not want to build everyone up around you? Why do you not want everyone around you to do great?”

Meek Mill has now addressed the controversy on social media, criticizing the sports mogul’s statement.

“Rubin shouldn’t be saying that type stuff out loud … a black man suppose to but nobody saying it… Its like we only collab on songs women and parties… he be hearing my friends getting murdered like why meek, I can’t explain it to him in a sensible way!” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Michael Rubin also attempted to explain his remarks, writing: “I got a phone call from one of the people I have the most respect for in the world – they told me while they appreciate my intention, it’s not my place to speak on black culture. I get it and really appreciate the input!”

He added: “My intention was to say how important it is that we need to uplift each other, stop hate on each other, and push each other to win, and always root for each other’s success! My bad , Much love and appreciate the feedback.”

Many speculated that the person who called Rubin was JAY-Z due to their close association.

Prior to his apology, Rubin was slammed by many including ScHoolboy Q, who reacted to his comments by tweeting: “braH…… im cool on this app tHis sHit outta control dog [crying face emojis] NO SUCH THING AS BLACK ON BLACK ANYTHING WTF.”

Rick Ross Remembers Nipsey Hussle On Late Rapper’s Birthday: ‘He Was Way Advanced’

0

Rick Ross has honored the late Nipsey Hussle on his birthday, saluting the slain rapper as ahead of his time and peers.

On Thursday (August 15), what would’ve been Nipsey’s 39th birthday, the MMG mogul took a moment to pay tribute to his late collaborator who was tragically killed in March 2019.

“Today my boy Nipsey Hussle would have been 39 years old. The marathon continues,” Rozay said in a video posted on his Instagram Stories.

“Salute to Blacc Sam, the whole TMC family, the squad,” he continued, shouting out Nipsey’s brother and business partner. “It’s not many people who woulda held that empire up and made sure it elevated the way it has.

“I’m sure Nip, he’s smiling. He was a legend, he was way advanced, way too advanced for lame n-ggas, slow n-ggas. That boy was on some other shit, 10 years ago. So you know what it is, man.”

Ross signed off by encouring his followers to stream Nipsey’s 2010 mixtape The Marathon in his memory.

Rick Ross and Nipsey Hussle’s relationship was one of mutual respect and admiration, not to mention plenty of musical collaborations.

The Biggest Bawse first joined Crenshaw’s finest on 2012’s “Proud of That,” which led to a number of other songs together including “The Weather,” “A Hunnid a Show,” “Fountain of Youth,” “Rich N-gga Lifestyle” and “Mark My Words.”

Rozay even tried to lure Nipsey to his Mayback Music Group imprint in 2013 following the release of the West Coast rapper’s $100 Crenshaw mixtape.

“Me and Rick Ross sat down and talked and he made it clear that he can make the deal that I need,” Neighborhood Nip told Complex. “And I told him that I don’t need money; I need a partnership, I need a marketing machine and I need international distribution for my product.

“Ross fought tooth and nail to make that happen for me. I respect him and salute him for that, but then we ran into the corporate structure of these companies. And again, it offended me, because here you have one of the most powerful, respected n-ggas in the game about to make a power move that’s going to incite the culture and they want us to be the ones that compromise.

He added: “They should be the ones to compromise for the culture so this thing can happen. We’re not supposed to compromise and that’s what they said. They said, ‘Just be happy with the fame. You’re gonna be the biggest n-gga out of the West,’ and all this other shit. Sell that to a ho, my n-gga. I’m a man.”

Dad goes on one knee and proposes to 20-year-old daughter with purity ring

0

A dad caused a bit of a stir online after giving his 20-year-old daughter a purity ring in a rather unconventional way.

Patrick and his daughter, Sarah, are self-proclaimed Christian content creators who make videos about their religion, beliefs, and father-daughter relationship under the username @justadadandhisladybug.

However, viewers were stunned at Patrick’s decision to show his daughter how “proud” he was that she’d remained “pure” throughout her life.

“We got something special for you,” Patrick declared to his followers. He explained that he was about to surprise Sarah with a purity ring but wanted to do it in a special way. Apparently, that meant getting on one knee as if it were a marriage proposal.

In the video on his now-private account, he hurriedly added that it wasn’t going to be an actual marriage proposal but just a way to show his daughter that he was proud of her for keeping her “purity” intact.

Walking into his daughter’s room, Patrick instructed her to stand up because he wanted to give her something. Getting out of bed, she stood before her dad as he got down on one knee and presented her with the purity ring.

“First of all, you’re 20 years old, and most kids your age are not pure,” Patrick said to his daughter.

“Well, I want to thank you for being here and give you something.

“Sarah, will you wear this ring as a sign and a promise to God and to me to remain pure until the day you’re married?”

“Yes,” she replied, then peered closely at the ring before adding, “That’s gorgeous.”

Putting the ring on her left hand, in the same place that an engagement ring would go, Patrick explained that she was to keep the purity ring on that finger until the day her husband replaced it with another ring.

The video has sparked mixed reactions, causing the father to put his account on private.

Julián Álvarez details reasons for leaving Man City

0

Julián Álvarez explained that his decision to leave Manchester City after just two seasons for Atlético Madrid was driven by his desire for “a new challenge.”

The Argentina international, who was under contract with City until June 2028, finalized his transfer to Atlético earlier this week for £82 million ($104 million).

“I felt that I needed a change in my career,” Alvarez said during his unveiling on Friday.
“I needed to look for a new challenge and I believe that this club gives me the tools to give my best.”

Alvarez scored 19 goals in 54 appearances for City last season but failed to dislodge Erling Haaland as the first-choice striker in the team.

“I’ve come here to help the team and to fight for every title,” Alvarez said. “I’m very happy and motivated.

“I spoke to [Diego] Simeone and he said he wanted me to come here. He said that I was going to help the team and they would enhance my strengths and help me improve on my weaknesses.

My aim is to show my best form, help the team win and take Atlético to the highest level.”

The 24-year-old won six trophies, including two Premier League titles and one Champions League at City.

During his time at the club, he starred in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022 and also lifted the Copa América earlier this summer.

“I learned a lot there [at City],” Alvarez said. “I’m grateful for the two years I’ve been there.”

Following his two seasons with Pep Guardiola, the forward spoke of looking forward to working under Simeone.

“They [Guardiola and Simeone] are among the best coaches in the world,” he said.

“I don’t feel a superhero for winning the World Cup. I still have a lot to learn and improve.

“I am very happy to be working with Simeone for what he means to this club and for world football.”

Atlético begin their LaLiga campaign on Aug. 19 away to Villarreal.

Court suspends US judge for handcuffing 15 year old girl for sleeping during field trip

0

A Detroit judge has been temporarily removed from the bench after he ordered a 15-year-old girl to wear handcuffs and a jail uniform because she seemed to fall asleep during a court field trip.

District Court Judge Kenneth King criticized Eva Goodman’s “attitude” and stated that his intention was to demonstrate proper courtroom behavior.

The teenager was at the 36th District Court as part of a visit organized by the environmental charity The Greening, which also offers activities like kayaking and bird-watching.

On Thursday, the chief judge of the 36th District Court, William McConico, said in a statement that he had conducted a “swift and thorough internal investigation” of the incident and decided to temporarily take Mr King off his cases to undergo “necessary training”.

“We sincerely hope that this incident does not undermine our longstanding relationships with local schools,” Judge McConio said.

The girl’s mother, Latoreya Hill, told local news: “Would you want someone to treat your child like that?
“To belittle her in front of the whole world and her friends, to make her feel even more worse about her situation.”

Video from the court shows Judge King telling Ms Hill’s daughter: “One thing you’ll learn about my courtroom is that I’m not a toy. I am not to be played with.”

He asked other visitors on the trip to vote if he should put Eva in a juvenile detention centre, before deciding to have her handcuffed and dressed in a jail outfit before releasing her.

“It was her whole attitude and her whole disposition that disturbed me,” the judge said in interviews afterwards.
“I wanted to get through to her, show how serious this is,” he said, adding: “I’ll do whatever needs to be done to reach these kids and make sure that they don’t end up in front of me.”

In the video of the incident, Judge King tells Eva: “You sleep at home in your bed, not in court.”
Her mother, however, said Eva did not have “her own bed that she can sleep in”.
“She was tired,” Ms Hill, a single mother of two, said. “I’m trying my best.”

Judge Aliyah Sabree, who has the No 2 leadership post at the court, said on Wednesday that said Mr King’s actions did “not reflect the standards” of the court and would be “addressing this matter with the utmost diligence”.

Mr King said he stood by his decisions. “I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail,” he said. “That was my own version of Scared Straight.“

GOVERNMENT BUYS A BUILDING FOR AROUND $10M FROM A PRIVATE COMPANY

MBS16.08.2024

A 4 storey building (former MTN next to Citi Bank) on Plot #4647 has been sold to Government for around $10M. It’s located in Rhodespark at Elunda park area towards the Addis Ababa Roundabout on Beit road off Chikwa road. The purchases was made some few months ago via the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) whose mandate from the UNIP days is to build or finance affordable houses for ordinary Zambians .

Guess who owned it and sold it to Government vis ZNBS?
It’s Africa Life Insurance (Aflife) company owned by individuals associated to top government power. This then brings in the issue of conflict of interest which is a form of corruption itself. A seller and a buyer should not have vested personal interest especially if its public resources involved.

The Oxford dictionary defines Conflict of Interest as a situation in which a person is in a position to derive personal benefit from actions or decisions made in their official capacity.
The Individual or Individuals concerned need to declare interest before a transaction is concluded where they have direct or indirect personal interest or personal benefit in the short or long term.

This information has been availed to me by a whistleblower who I shall protect and not mention by name.

Every reasonable Zambian knows that ZNBS has a lot of commercial properties in all provinces and some of them even struggling to have tenants. If it in Lusaka not only do they own the famous talk building society but a number of other half utilized commercial building. So buying a private property does not make business sense and they must have been forced or ordered to purchase the property at the exorbitant price.

I hereby CHALLENGE Zambia National Building Society to confirm or deny the above inappropriate transaction. If true they should then state the actual purchase price (declared and undeclared) , source of funds given ZNBS has been illiquid and unable to give mortgages to ordinary citizens. Their pipeline for house loans to citizens been outstanding for years.

I CHALLENGE Aflife to also state their position on the conflict of interest concern that we have on behalf of the people of Zambia. Our is to question on their behalf. When its private entire involved in a transaction then its non of our business but when it’s public funds involved, then its utmost business as opposition to probe on their behalf like we doing now. Video of the building to follow shortly.

Yours truely,

Kalaba tips Hichilema to engage Lungu over Zimbabwe issue

Kalaba tips Hichilema to engage Lungu over Zimbabwe issue

CITIZENS First (CF) president Harry Kalaba says President Hakainde Hichilema should reach out to former president Edgar Lungu to address any perceived misunderstanding with Zimbabwe, a sister country.

Kalaba, a former minister of Foreign Affairs, says there is no need to create enmity.

On June 20 this year, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe told Parliament that Zambia has sought the regional bodies’ urgent intervention to soften an apparent diplomatic spat with Zimbabwe.

Earlier this year, a video was publicised on various global platforms depicting Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Russian counterpart Vladmir Putin in a discussion on the sidelines of Russia’s economic forum.

In the video, President Mnangagwa said: “You see, the West has just begun consolidating its power in Zambia, our next door neighbour.

“There was a time when Zimbabwe and Zambia were one; it was called Northern and Southern Rhodesia. It was made one by the British but they are now separate. And the Americans are consolidating their power in that country, both in terms of security and financial support to Zambia to make sure that we feel lonely.”

In the same video, President Mnangagwa called for enhanced Russian military support and deeper Russian involvement in Zimbabwe.

The 44th ordinary Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) summit of heads of State and government will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe tomorrow.

The ordinary summit is held every year and is attended by heads of State and government from the 16 SADC member states, namely Zambia, South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mauritius, Mozambique, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Seychelles and Comoros.

SADC seeks to achieve development, peace and security, and economic growth, to reduce poverty and enhance the standard and quality of life of the people of southern Africa.

Haimbe and Minister of Defence Ambrose Lufuma, among other senior government officials, are in Harare for the same meeting.

To be or not to be SADC indaba HH glitch- Anthony Mukwita

To be or not to be SADC indaba HH glitch

By Anthony Mukwita

Recently I read with disbelief that Zambia under President Hichilema will be breaking a time-honoured ritual of attending the SADC heads of states summit slated for Harare, Zimbabwe.

Details remain scanty but from what I read, our President will skip the 17th of August indaba because he either, does not feel safe and or, he is concerned about Zimbabwe´s democratic credentials under his older brother President Emmerson Mnangagwa aka the crocodile who has been the boss in Zimbabwe since 2017.

As an international relations buff the news that our diplomatic relations had dipped to this low ebb left me quite concerned given the history we share with our southern border nation across the Zambezi.

Zambia and Zimbabwe in warm international relations semantics have been known as the ´Siamese twins´ connected by the brain coming from the colonial times when we were one country, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland, Malawi onto the eastern border.

We have broken bread and wine together and shed cheers of sorrow and joy while fighting for each other’s independence from the days of first president Kenneth Kaunda and Uncle Bob Robert Mugabe, from colonial Britain.
Zambia has taken more than one bullet for Zim until he got its independence in 1980, a joyous moment hence the reason I cannot understand the current stand-off.

what has gone so terribly wrong between us that a round table meeting, a couple of handshakes cannot save given the fact that what unites us through history is much bigger than what divides us?

I know the Crocodile recently told President Valdmir Putin of the Federation of Russia that he felt ´unsafe´ with Zambia under President Hichilema who recently shook hands with the United States and allowed AFRICOM, the combatant military wing of uncle Sam to have boots In Zambia for the first time in 60 years against the SADC tradition.

I also know that Don HH has not up to now congratulated the Crocodile on his re-election this year, it’s like the victory never even occurred.

I also know that lots of political and diplomatic blood flowed when an HH envoy openly opined that he did not feel the recent Zim polls were NOT free and fair against laid down SADC rules and diplomatic decorum.

So, the battles drums have been beating on the southern border for a while now, but I did not think they would ratchet up to the level of a meeting snub.

This is as bad as it gets, it could take years to fix or repair because diplomatic glitches in international relations are like a glass, once broken sometimes it’s almost near impossible to put them back together.

The saying actually is ´if it aint broke, do not fix it.´

The way I see it don HH has bigger problems and fires to put out locally before he can create more abroad.

Back home he has the challenge of reducing the high cost of the staple food mealie meal currently so high, more than 50 pc of Zambians are going to sleep hungry, it’s not K50 is K400.
He has to contend with graft in officialdom where his top government people are accused to be looting or stealing dry, every state asset they can lay their hands on from land to bogus court settlements.

The don HH has to contend with the high cost of fuel at K33 per lire instead of K12 per litre and high costs of fertiliser including an economy that is going bust plus a huge foreign debt at more than $12 billion that has expanded out of control with an additional $6 billion in just under three years.

When you look at all these insurmountable problems the head of state has to deal, you shudder to think that he is creating an enemy on the southern border when he has so many enemies locally, why is he doing this?
The diplomatic snub in the 60-year history of Zambia can only be equated to that of President Levy Mwanawasa who died in 2008 and never thereafter.

Many of you diplomatic buffs that Mr Mwanawasa likened Zimbabwe under Uncle Bob to a ´s sinking titanic´ regarding governance and rights issues.

That did not sit well diplomatically for us.
To think that it would recur in the 21st century is a big ask, like a blowing the whistle while you are on the ventilator, but our President has made history yet again ´for the first time.´
I often say if the current government ever needed advice regarding international relations, I am here to help.

Why are they letting the don HH walk into a bottom less pit of diplomatic glitches, making him look really bad. He doesn’t deserve this.
By the way in case, you are new to regional geopolitics parlance, SADC is a regional grouping of 16 countries below: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The current chair is Zambia under don HH who was supposed to hand over the power stick to the Crocodile in Harare on 17th August in Harare but I guesse that won’t happen.
It’s more like the European Union or EU beyond our borders.

My hope is that don HH and the Crocodile, who actually has family in Zambia in Mumbwa and attended UNZA where he obtained his law degree can mend the fences soon.

What unites Zambia and Zimbabwe is much bigger than personal egos and Presidents come and go, countries and people remain.
The bemba’s say ubukulu bwa nkonko bakumwena ku Masako in simple translation, there is strength in numbers.

Ofcourse we all know don HH has dispatched Haimbe to represent him at this auspicious event where Angola hands over the overall SADC power of Chair to Zimbabwe while Zambia hands over the defence and Troika power at same event.

Diplomacy is all about talking and talking and talking so I hope Zambia and Zimbabwe can talk soon.

36-year-old mother has been jailed for four years for having s33x with two 13-year-olds in her son’s bedroom

A 36-year-old mother has been jailed for four years for having s33x with two 13-year-olds in her son’s bedroom while he was at school.

The woman, Natalie Harris started sending s3xual messages to one of the schoolboys on Snapchat before inviting them both to her address.

In a ‘total disregard of any moral compass’, the mother-of-six developed an ‘obsession for s3x with young boys’ and wanted ‘attention’ after a break-up, a court heard.

She was arrested after a video of the threesome filmed by one of the boys was circulated around their school.

Harris, from Waterlooville, Hampshire, wept in the dock on Thursday as she was jailed for four years, having admitted four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

A mother of one of the 13-year-old boys told Portsmouth Crown Court that Harris ‘has taken away his childhood’.

Prosecutor Matthew Lawson said both boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were 13 at the time of the incident which took place in Waterlooville, near Portsmouth, in November 2022.

Mr Lawson told Portsmouth Crown Court: ‘The case came to light in January of last year.

‘There was a video that had been circulating around the school both boys attended.

‘The police got a call from a concerned parent which showed an adult female engaging in sexual activity with a boy.’

The court heard the two boys initially denied involvement before one of them eventually told their mother.

Mr Lawson said Harris was identified as the woman in the video via her distinctive hand tattoos.

Her mobile phone was seized by police and a ‘thread of messages’ between her and one of the boys was found – who she had saved in her contacts as Rachel.

It was heard she told him he ‘shouldn’t tell anyone’ as she could go to prison.

Telling the court how the boy came forward to tell his mum he had been the one who took the video, Mr Lawson said: ‘He said in November 2022, around the time of the World Cup, the defendant had started to message him on Snapchat and by text.

‘He said the messages became sexual and invited both boys to go to her house.

‘It was clear to both boys they were going there for sex.’

The court heard that when they arrived at the address, Harris took them to her son’s bedroom, where they had sex for roughly 40 minutes and left before her own boy was due to return from school.

She was arrested and initially claimed ‘no knowledge’ of who the woman was in the video.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the mother of the boy who came forward said she had seen her son ‘fade away’ as a result of the ‘awful nightmare’.

She added her ‘poor boy’ has lost interest in several hobbies and now stays indoors as a result.

‘My heart just breaks, I couldn’t have imagined this happening to my son – he is a child,’ she said.

‘Natalie has completely turned our family upside down.

‘The worst thing about all of this is she has taken away his childhood and I will never forgive her.

‘He will never get back the childhood that has been taken from him. This will stay with us now for the rest of our lives.’

Harris, who has since been diagnosed with bipolar and multiple personality disorder – was suffering from a ‘manic episode’, it was heard.

In mitigation, criminal barrister Berenice Mulvanny said Harris was ‘deeply remorseful’ and ‘devastated’ about her behaviour.

She said it had been ‘triggered’ by a break-up with a partner.

On Harris’ split with her partner, Judge Sarah Munro KC said: ‘You reacted to his departure dramatically.

‘In your behaviour, you became extremely promiscuous.’

She said a ‘dramatic change’ was noted in Harris’s mood which included ‘an obsession in you for sex with young boys’.

‘The boy described how you started to send him messages and invited him to your home,’ she said. ‘You took them to your son’s bedroom and engaged in sexual activity with both boys.

‘They left because it was time for your son to come home from school.’

On the boy who reported the incident, she said: ‘The impact upon him has been dreadful. He feels guilty about what happened. You have clearly turned that family upside down and taken his childhood away from him.’

Sentencing her, she continued: ‘No sentence I can pass can give him his childhood back or undo the damage you have done to him.’

The judge said the trigger for the ‘manic episode’ which resulted in ‘erratic behaviour’ was her split with her partner.

‘You felt unloved and you began to act in a way to get attention,’ she added. ‘In your desire for attention, you gave no consideration on the long-term detrimental impact on these young boys.

‘There was significant planning and grooming behaviour used by you, a serious abuse of trust and a very significant disparity in age.’

She added there had been a ‘total disregard of any moral compass’ and jailed her for four years.

Harris was also made the subject of a ten-year restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order of the same length.

SADC SUMMIT: HICHILEMA BLUNDERS AGAIN- Fred M’membe

SADC SUMMIT: HICHILEMA BLUNDERS AGAIN

Today, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will hold the 44th ordinary summit of Heads of State and Government in Harare, Zimbabwe. The SADC Summit is accountable for the regional bloc’s overall policy direction and control of functions of member states. It is the policy-making institution of SADC. The ordinary SADC summit convenes annually and is attended by Heads of State and Government from the SADC community.

During the 44th SADC summit, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa will take over the SADC chairpersonship from his Angolan counterpart President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.

But for reasons best known by himself, Mr Hakainde Hichilema will not be attending this year’s 44th SADC summit in Harare but instead he has delegated the functions to his amateur Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mr Mulambo Haimbe. We are not surprised with the attitude adopted by Zambia because we are fully aware of this President’s pettiness, inexperience, and puppetry stance. In his ignorance, Mr Hichilema thinks that by staying away from the summit, he is isolating and humiliating President Mnangagwa and the Zimbabweans, yet the opposite is true. It’s actually Mr Hichilema and Zambia that are losing out when it comes to mobilisation of regional solidarity, coordination, and support on key issues. The negative spillover effects on this diplomatic miscalculation will be heavily felt at the most critical time in the nearest future.

Diplomacy demands sobriety, maturity, and wisdom in dealing with regional, continental, and transcontinental matters. So, whether Mr Hichilema has issues with his Zimbabwean counterpart or not, dealing with the matter in the manner he has done is not only unwise but highly reckless too. This is not the first time Zambia and Zimbabwe have found themselves on the opposite end of an argument. The late presidents Levy Mwanawasa and Robert Mugabe faced a more intricate and tension rising diplomatic emergency, but the duo, with the help of president Thabo Mbeki, navigated the crisis with a lot of wisdom, tact and maturity. Equally, Mr Hichilema has a grave responsibility to handle this matter with equivalent style. Snubbing the summit that would model the future of our region’s development and foreign relations only leads to isolation and intensification of the crisis.

What kind of puppet leadership is this? We ask a question to people within the UPND who think our observations on these matters are driven by malice and mischief? With such elementary diplomatic miscalculations, how does one describe Mr Hichilema’s ignorant and irrational handling of foreign relations matters? Isn’t this outright puppet leadership? Well, the writing on the wall is clear, Mr Hichilema is a sell-out and a puppet of neocolonial forces. At present and for the first time in our history, Zambia has a leader who has been captured by transnational corporations and global imperialist forces. Zambians already know that Mr Hichilema is not only a front, but also an instrument of neocolonial special interests. And like all puppets, Mr Hichilema’s governance style exposes a deep reputation for intellectual laziness, diplomatic spinelessness and a severe addiction for state power by just playing the role of President rather than enthusiastically shaping the nation’s foreign relations, development agenda as well as corroborating and developing consensus with fellow African leaders to establish an independent and dignified direction and vision for the future of our nation and our continent in general.

Mr Hichilema is operating on the end of a string held by his puppet masters. Even his diplomatic travels can only go as far as his puppet masters or foreign handlers are willing to stretch out the string that is yoking him. It’s a pity that Mr Hichilema clearly underestimated the repercussions of the imperialist links and covenants he entered into when seeking office. He lacks alertness of how he is being used and the consequences of this for our national sovereignty, security, and development interests. A leader whose supervisory competence and decision-making are solely tied to the agenda of the string pullers even when that agenda is clearly in contrast with our national values and interests is a disaster. How can it be that Zambia, a country with such a rich liberation struggle history, is among the evil forces dividing the region and supporting colonialism in the 21st century?

By snubbing the SADC summit in Harare, Mr Hichilema has scored a diplomatic own goal. It’s time Zambia returned to its traditional non-aligned position in the geopolitical arena!

KASANDA STOLE US$5 MILLION FROM EGYPTIAN WHILE ARMED – POLICE OFFICER

KASANDA STOLE US$5 MILLION FROM EGYPTIAN WHILE ARMED – POLICE OFFICER

A Police officer yesterday told the Lusaka High Court that during investigations after the thwarted gold scam at KKIA last year, an Egyptian national complained about being robbed of their US$5 million by businessman Shadreck Kasanda who was armed with a pistol.

Detective Inspector Arnold Kawangu from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport told judge Chilombo Maka that Micheal Adel Michel Botros came to transact in gold at the Airport with Kasanda who robbed him of his money.

Kawangu narrated that on August 14, 2023, he reported for duty in the afternoon and he noticed that his supervisor and his colleagues were not at their usual posts and when he inquired he was informed that most of the officers were in the VIP lounge.

He said according to the person he inquired from, the officers had confiscated items and from some Egyptian nationals after grounding their plane.

Kawangu said he got curious and decided to rush to the VIP lounge which was crowded with airport security and the suspects.

“Where the white man was seated and I could see some devices for counting money which were counting money. The currency was in US dollars. I could only see one person from where I was standing. He had long beards. I could also see the officer in charge and my other workmates in the same room,” Kawangu recounted.

The officer said he proceeded to work and later in the evening his boss told him to report for work early the following day so that he could help with recording statements from witnesses.

Kawangu said he and other officers proceeded to the National Command Centre and worked with other investigative wings.

“From what I was able to hear during the interviews, the plane had come for a transaction in Zambia with some Zambians. On September 8, 2023, I was called to command center and assigned with a docket of aggravated robbery. I came to learn that the white man I saw at the airport was Micheal Adel Botros,”he said.

Kawangu disclosed that Botros complained of being robbed by Kasanda and his friends who threatened to shoot him after grabbing his bag containing money.

“Micheal Botros complained that a known person to him by the name of Shadreck Kasanda who was with others who were armed with pistols threatened him and in the process took away from him a bag against his will. The same containing US$5 million. This occurred on August 13, 2023, between 18:00 and 23:00 hours at the Skyways private hanger at KKIA,” he said.

He said he interviewed Kasanda who was already in detention regarding the alleged theft but he did not give him a satisfactory answer to which he charged him for aggravated robbery.

During cross examination by Clement Andeleki, the witness said that there was no report of aggravated robbery in the occurrence book, on August 13.

He confirmed that he never saw the pistol which Kasanda was armed with neither did he see the firearms belonging to the Egyptians.

This is in a matter where Kasanda is charged with aggravated robbery.

It is alleged that Kasanda on August 13, 2023 whilst armed with a pistol, stole US$5,000,000.00 from Egyptian Micheal Adel Michel Botros and immediately after stealing, used or threatened to use actual violence against the Egyptian national, in order prevent him from retaining the stolen money.

Judge Maka adjourned the case to August 20.

ZAMBIA MAKES PROGRESS IN LAUNCHING SATELLITE

16 August 2024

Government has completed the construction of the Earth Receiving Station ahead of the launch of the country’s first satellite.

Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati says government has so far spent over US$14 million to complete the Ground Receiving Station which is located in 10 Miles area of Chibombo District.

Mr. Mutati says experts are now testing the Ground Receiving Station as they prepare to go into phase two of the preparations to launch the satellite.

Speaking in Lusaka West after he toured Wonderful Group of Companies, Mr. Mutati said government is committed to launch a satellite which will help in agriculture, forestry, ground water management and other sectors.

Mr. Mutati says the satellite will help predict the weather and avert effects of climate change such as drought.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mutati says the US$1 billion which Wonderful Group of Companies has invested in it’s fertilizer and tile business in Lusaka has created the much needed jobs in the capital city.

Mr. Mutati says the amount of investment at United Capital Fertilizer and Marcopolo Tiles speaks to the sound policies which government is implementing.

He says government will continue providing a conducive environment for the private sector to thrive.

Mr. Mutati asked Wonderful Group of Companies to partner with the Ministry to sharpen the skills of youths who will compete in the World Skills Africa Competition which Zambia will host in Livingstone in April 2025.

He said the skills which the group of companies have are equal to the task to build the capacity of the Zambian participants.

And Wonderful Group of Companies Deputy Chief Executive Officer Roy Mwamba said the institution is looking for 400 chemical engineers to operate the amonium nitrate and urea plants which are scheduled to be operationalized in 2026.

UPDATE ON THE ENERGY SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY.

Today, the Energy Minister Makozo Chikote held a press briefing to update the nation on the energy situation in the country.

Here are the highlights;

✅ Available power generation this week remains at an average of 890 megawatts against an installation generation capacity of 3,777 Megawatts.

✅ The national average peak demand remained at 2,400 Megawatts, resulting in a power deficit of 1,510 Megawatts.

✅ To address this deficit, ZESCO limited  with other traders are currently importing a total of 496 megawatts of power from the region, leaving a net deficit of 1014MW which has resulted in more than 12 hours of power rationing throughout the country.

✅ This week, President Hakainde Hichilema graced the ground-breaking ceremony for a US$400 million Maamba Collieries phase II project which will supply an additional 300MW of thermal power into the national grid.

WATER SITUATION AT KARIBA DAM AS OF THIS WEEK;

✅The water situation in the country’s major reservoirs as reported in the last presser has continued to decline.

✅ In this regard, the Kariba dam remains with only about 10% of usable water for power generation against a relatively high-water utilisation rate to sustain demand. with the impending depletion of ZESCO’S water allocation at Kariba

LOAD-SHEDDING

✅ With the impending depletion of ZESCO’S water allocation at Kariba, the power deficit is expected to increase by 300mw while the inevitable scheduled maintenance at Maamba is expected to cause another 135mw deficit during the month of September 2024.

✅ The official power rationing hours will extend to 17 hours daily effective 1st September 2024.

✅168MW has been secured from ESKOM of South Africa and another 50MW is being negotiated from SAPP and is expected to start flowing by 21st august 2024.

ZESCO TARIFFS;

✅ Currently, ZESCO is importing power for as high as US$12.6 cents per kilowatt-hour against a local regulated tariff of US$4.1 cents per kilowatt-hour. ZESCO tariffs are since insufficient to meet the cost power imports.

✅ Government is consulting with various stakeholders in order to design a tariff mechanism that will allow the power utility company to recover its cost during the drought response period.

NET METERING;
✅ Government through ZESCO limited opened the doors for citizens and businesses to participate in the net-metering initiative.

✅ ZESCO has taken bold and proactive steps to ensure seamless execution of this initiative by publishing on their website a recommended list of equipment in order to ensure access to quality, reliable, efficient, and compatible technology options.

✅ The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) approved the requisite step by step guidelines for net-metering in order to ensure transparency and equity.

ADDITIONAL INCENTIVES FOR SOLAR, GEOTHERMAL AND LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) EQUIPMENT;

✅Government has approved additional incentives aimed at supporting not only the solar industry but also geothermal development and liquified petroleum gas equipment for cooking and heating.

IMPLEMENTATION OF ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PROJECTS AND INSTALLATION IN STRATEGIC INSTITUTIONS;

✅ Government through the Rural  Electrification Authority (REA) continues to allocate more resources towards the rolling out of various off-grid and on-grid solar projects in various communities around the country in order to reduce the burden on the national grid during this difficult time.

✅ REA has completed three more solar mini-grids in the month of August, namely;

i. The 60-kilowatt Mpidi solar mini grid in Zambezi district, North western province;

ii. The 100-kilowatt Chilubi hospital solar mini grid in Chilubi district, Northern province; and

iii. The 70-kilowatt Chieftainess Mwanya solar mini grid in Lundazi district, in Eastern province.

✅ This brings the cumulative total of operational solar mini-grids developed by rea to thirteen (13).

IT IS FOLLY FOR LUNGU TO SUGGEST HE LEAD A BETTER GOVERNMENT

IT IS FOLLY FOR LUNGU TO SUGGEST HE LEAD A BETTER GOVERNMENT

Astro Television Editorial
15 August, 2024

To suggest that Mr. Edgar Lungu presided over a better government than that of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema in his first three years is rather folly and utterly dishonest and we will elaborate why we feel that way in this editorial.

On his Facebook page, Lungu said he was a proud former President because his PF government left a better legacy in general terms as compared to the legacy of the UPND Government so far after their three years in office.

He went on to compare prices of commodities as at 2021 and those of today, which had generally doubled over the years.

Fellow Citizens, we are not fools, are we?

The most fair comment from Mr. Lungu would have been him acknowledging that this country finds itself in this position entirely because of his reckless and senseless borrowing that has seen the UPND Government fighting an uphill battle from day one in their bid to clean up his mess.

This country is grappling in untold debt beyond what it can pay. If you recall dear citizen, it was Mr. Lungu’s government that became the first government in Africa to default on a Euro bond payment of US$40million despite them spending a similar amount on second hand refurbished Fire Trucks earlier. They failed to pay and plunged us into a non-credit worthy country.

Our country today is battling with about US$18billion worth of foreign debt, a bill which substantially disappeared into individual pockets.

To bring this into perspective, first President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda (KK), accrued a debt of about US$7billion, a debt which made this country to be part of the countries deemed ‘Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC).’ This is the debt that KK failed to pay leading to the Privatization of the mines under Dr. Frederick Chiluba (Edith Nawakwi as Finance Minister), and led to the HIPC Completion point under Dr. Levy Mwanawasa (Ng’andu Magade as Finance Minister) in which the country begged for forgiveness of our debt. The program was continued by Dr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda (Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane as Finance Minister) after the untimely death of Dr. Mwanawasa. From independence, we had accrued $7billion and battled with it until 2011 when Dr. Banda handed over a debt of only US$0.5billion to the PF government, literally zero debt.

In ten years, the PF took us back to a debt higher than we had ever gotten as a country, $18billion. At such high debt burdens, we cannot continue to live lavishly as a country as some belts will need to be tightened.

That much money was pumped into the country by the PF government but we can not see what it really did. Had it been invested into cash generating ventures, the debt would be paying itself off today, but no, the PF government spent it on over priced, non-revenue generating projects and pocketed the rest.

We are like a household overburdened by debt brought in by an Uncle who keeps mocking the brother for eating only vegetables without cooking oil while the brother is trying to pay off the debt he brought against all sensible advise.

Upon assuming office, Mr. Hichilema has done nothing but try to renegotiate the external debt terms, in what has been coined as Debt Restructuring. He continues to push for this program to be actualized because it is the only solution that will save a little money in the country to revamp our economy.

Mr. Lungu should be the last to speak at this table. He presided over one of the most corrupt and most reckless governments to date since independence.

We have only spoken about debt, we haven’t even touched on caderism brutality, Police inefficiencies, removal of bursaries, gassing, City Market gutting, grand corruption, and many other negatives scored by PF government, these are stories for another day.

To stand on the podium and claim he did a good job is insulting to his successors who are trying desperately hard to mop after him.

This, fellow citizens, is why we say it is folly for Lungu to claim he presided over a better government than Hichilema.
