Osimhen must be disciplined,  banned for sometime from the team

0

I remembered when Victor Osimhen abused Victor Ikpeba, because Ikpeba accused him of wasting the chanced he should have scored in the world cup play off against Ghana, I mentioned in some of the shows I attended that time, he should be santioned and be made to pay fine and apologize to Ikpeba.

I was so shocked today, when I saw the video where he was lashing out at Finidi on Instagram, using fowl languages, calling Finidi by name, he didn’t say, coach Finidi, uncle Finidi, Mr Finidi, but he called him by name. Such behavior is highly condemnable, and should not go unpunished. Finidi can born Osimhen, what Finidi achieved in football, Osimhen can never achieve it, Finidi help Nigeria qualify for world cup twice and play in world cup twice, Osimhen couldn’t help Nigeria qualify for world cup and has not played in world cup. Finidi won champion’s league with Ajax, Osimhen is yet to win it, Finidi is an AFCON winner, Osimhen has not achieved that. Finidi was the best number 7 in his days, Osimhen is not the best number 9 currently. As current African footballer of the year, he is an ambassador of Africa as a whole, not just Nigeria, therefore someone like him must not be seen with such dirty action.

Now coming to the matter, Finidi shouldn’t have mentioned name, he should have talked generally, but I understand his frustration. But come to think of it, their is no lie in what Finidi said about Osimhen, since Osimhen has become the team’s number one striker, he has been selecting matches he will play, in the last 5 years, most of the friendly matches the super eagles have played, Osimhen has always opted out, anyone who is doubting should go and research, I stand to be challenged and corrected. He will claim he is injured, but immediately after the friendly, you will see him playing in Napoli.
We all remember how he colluded with his club to opt out of AFCON 2 years ago, up till today, the reason for opting out is not clear.

This is always the problem with so many Nigerian players, most expecially those that sees themselves as the most important players in the team, Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwakwo too were selecting matches they will play in their own time, that is why Nigeria could not qualify for world cup in 2006, because they were not honouring invitation for world cup qualifiers matches away from home, I remember when a journalist asked Okocha why he didn’t honour a particular match, he responded by saying he is not a machine.

Mikel Obi and Victor Moses too did the same thing, I remembered Stephen Keshi dealt with Mikel Obi because of that, by not inviting him for close to a year, it was the last qualifying match for 2013 AFCON that he invited him again, and ever since, Mikel did not try that again.

Obafemi Martins was doing same thing, Nigeria almost not qualify for 2010 world cup, because Martins and some players were not honouring away matches, that was the reason Amodu shuaibu wanted to drop him for 2010 AFCON in Angola, if not for the public outcry and the intervention of the NFF, Amodu would have dropped him. Even when they got to Angola, Amodu put him on the bench, and was using Yakubu Ayegbeni, Ozase Odewenge and Chinedu Obasi upfront, martins will only come in at the tail end of the match.

We can go on and on, it’s a problem with our players, they are arrogant, they feel too big, they fill uncontrollable.

My suggestion is that, henceforth, let their be a code of conduct for every members of the team and the technical crew about dos and donts, that anyone who er, anyone who does contrary will be made to face sanction.

Back to Osimhen, he must be disciplined, he must be ban for sometime from the team and must be made to apologize to Finidi and Ikpeb

Chilima’s fruitful partnership with Mutharika, troubled alliance with Chakwera

Saulos Klaus Chilima, the late Malawian Vice President, had a remarkable political journey, marked by significant partnerships and controversies.

His collaboration with former President Arthur Peter Mutharika was notable for its achievements, while his alliance with President Lazarus Chakwera was marred by turmoil and allegations of corruption.

This essay explores the reasons why Chilima’s partnership with Mutharika was more fruitful than his association with Chakwera, despite the latter’s promises of a new era in Malawian politics.

Shared Vision and Mutual Respect

Chilima and Mutharika shared a common vision for Malawi’s development, which fostered a strong working relationship.

They respected each other’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to complement each other effectively.

During their tenure, they implemented significant reforms and projects, such as the Agricultural Irrigation Development Program and the National Fiber Backbone Project.

Their partnership was built on trust, which enabled them to make tough decisions and drive progress.

Complementary Skills and Expertise

Chilima brought his expertise in economics and development to the table, while Mutharika provided political acumen and
experience.

This combination enabled them to tackle complex challenges and find innovative solutions.

Their diverse skills and knowledge created a synergy that propelled Malawi forward, earning them recognition both domestically and internationally.

Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution

Chilima and Mutharika maintained open and honest communication, which helped resolve conflicts and misunderstandings promptly.

They engaged in constructive debates, listening to each other’s perspectives and finding common ground.

This effective communication fostered an environment of trust, respect, and cooperation, allowing them to navigate challenges and overcome obstacles.

Development-Oriented Agenda

The Chilima-Mutharika partnership focused on a development-oriented agenda, prioritizing projects that benefited the nation and its citizens.

They invested in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and agriculture, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.

Their commitment to development was unwavering, and their achievements remain a testament to their dedication.

Conclusion

In contrast, Chilima’s alliance with Chakwera was marked by controversy and turmoil.

The partnership was plagued by allegations of corruption, breach of contract, and a lack of shared vision.

Chilima’s arrest and subsequent dismissal of his case sparked widespread debate and speculation, casting a shadow over the legitimacy of the alliance.

In conclusion, Chilima’s partnership with Mutharika was more fruitful due to their shared vision, mutual respect, complementary skills, effective communication, and development-oriented agenda.

Their collaboration demonstrated that when leaders work together towards a common goal, they can achieve remarkable progress and leave a lasting legacy.

The contrast with Chakwera serves as a reminder that strong leadership requires more than just political will; it demands a shared commitment to the greater good.

Haiti police meet Kenyan commanders ahead of deployment of UN-backed mission to fight gangs

A team of Haitian police commanders on Tuesday met Kenya’s inspector general of police ahead of a planned deployment to the violence-hit Caribbean country expected to take place by the end of June.

Kenya is set to lead a U.N.-backed multinational peacekeeping mission with officers drawn from several countries to combat gang violence in Haiti that has left thousands of people dead and forced more than 360,000 others to flee their homes.

“We are counting on your support,” Haitian Police official Joachim Prohete told Kenya’s Inspector Japhet Koome in a meeting in Nairobi, as police clashed with anti-taxation protesters in the streets.

“We are ready and committed to come over and assist whenever needed,” Koome told the Haitian delegation in return.

The Haitian police also met commanders of the 1,000 Kenyan officers who will be deployed as part of the multinational peacekeeping mission.

Kenya will also host Haitian police for training, and the delegation in Nairobi on Tuesday visited the barracks where drills will take place, Kenyan police said.

President William Ruto last week said Kenya will honor its commitment to restore peace in the Caribbean nation. U.S. President Joe Biden during Ruto’s state visit in May expressed deep appreciation for Kenya’s planned deployment.

The deployment that was set to take place in May was postponed to allow completion of bases where the officers will operate from and the procurement of key equipment including vehicles.

Haiti has endured poverty, political instability and natural disasters for decades. International intervention in Haiti has a complicated history. A U.N.-approved stabilization mission to Haiti that started in June 2004 was marred by a sexual abuse scandal and the introduction of cholera, which killed nearly 10,000 people. The mission ended in October 2017.

What next after Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected South Africa president

Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as South Africa’s president on Friday with the support of once rival parties that have agreed to join his African National Congress (ANC) in a new government of national unity.

The ANC – which was forced to share power for the first time in 30 years after losing its majority in last month’s vote – still has to work out how to divide up the top cabinet jobs and overcome ideological differences with its new partners.

Here is what has happened and what to expect next:

What has happened?

Just a few hours after the first session of the new parliament got underway on Friday, the white-led, pro-business Democratic Alliance (DA) announced it would co-govern with the ANC “in a spirit of unity and collaboration”.

Two smaller parties, the socially conservative Inkatha Freedom Party and the right-wing Patriotic Alliance, are also part of the pact.

The radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party said it will not be part of a government that includes the DA or the Freedom Front Plus – two parties that draw support from the white minority.

The uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, is also not part of the unity government.

MK, which came in a surprising third in last month’s vote, has said it will join an alliance of smaller opposition parties in parliament called the “Progressive Caucus”, which includes the EFF and the centre-left United Democratic Movement.

This alliance will be the official opposition to the coalition government.

President’s election

On Friday, lawmakers took their oaths of office at the first session of the 400-seat National Assembly since the May 29 vote, then elected the ANC’s Thoko Didiza as speaker and DA member Annelie Lotriet as deputy speaker.

Ramaphosa was elected by lawmakers for a second term in office. He was going against EFF leader Julius Malema.

Since the ANC fell short of a majority, Ramaphosa drew upon the support of his new political allies to retain the presidency.

Under South African law, candidates for president, speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly are nominated by members of parliament. If only one candidate is nominated, he or she is then elected.

In the case of multiple candidates, lawmakers cast secret ballots with a candidate requiring support from a majority of members to be declared the winner.

Ramaphosa inauguration

Ramaphosa will be sworn in at an inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, June 19. He will preside over the seventh administration since the end of apartheid and the advent of multi-racial democracy.

Cabinet selection

The negotiations between the parties in the unity government will determine the composition of the executive branch, which is expected to undergo a major overhaul.

Political parties will negotiate conditions, including preferred portfolios, positions and cabinet candidates, which the newly elected president will announce in the days following his inauguration.

Key ministries such as finance, energy, foreign affairs and public enterprises are among the most coveted portfolios.

Prior to the election, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, Minister in the Presidency Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel all indicated they planned to step down.

South African law dictates that the president, who has the sole discretion to appoint the cabinet and deputy president, may select no more than two people from outside the National Assembly.

Once the cabinet is announced, Ramaphosa in conjunction with the speaker of the National Assembly and the chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, determines a date for the Opening of Parliament Address.

This address outlines the new administration’s governing priorities and marks the beginning of the new five-year parliamentary term.

US president Joe Biden to give legal status to 500,000 undocumented spouses

0

President Joe Biden has announced a new policy that would protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented spouses of US citizens from deportation, according to administration officials.

The issue of immigration has proven an election-year headache for Mr Biden, who recently issued a sweeping executive action to curb record migrant arrivals at the US-Mexico border.

The new policy will apply to those who have been in the country for at least 10 years and will allow them to work in the US legally.

The White House believes more than 500,000 spouses will benefit.

Speaking at an event at the White House on Tuesday, Mr Biden said the move would help the US immigration system become less “unfair” and “unjust” for benefit of immigrants, married couples – and all Americans.

Polls show that the issue is a primary concern for many voters ahead of the presidential poll in November.

The White House also believes the new spouses policy will benefit 50,000 young people under 21 whose parent is married to an American citizen.

It marks the most significant relief programme for undocumented migrants already in the US since the Obama administration announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or Daca, in 2012.

“The action I’m announcing today will go into effect later this summer,” Mr Biden said at the White House.

“The steps I’m taking today are overwhelmingly supported by the American people, despite what the other team says,” he added, a reference to Republicans.

The White House announcement came as the US marked the 12th anniversary of Daca, which shielded over 530,000 migrants who came to the US as children – known as Dreamers – from deportation.

On Monday, senior administration officials said that undocumented spouses of US citizens would qualify if they had lived in the country for 10 years and been married as of 17 June.

Those who qualify will have three years to apply for permanent residency and will be eligible for a three-year work permit.

On average, the White House believes that those eligible for the process have been in the US for 23 years. A majority will have been born in Mexico.

They will be “paroled in place” and allowed to remain in the US while their status is changed.

NumbersUSA, an organisation that advocates for tighter immigration controls, slammed the new policy as “unconscionable”.

The organisation’s chief executive, James Massa, said in a statement: “Rather than stopping the worst border crisis in history, President Biden has overreached his executive authority to use an unconstitutional process, circumventing voters and their elected representatives in Congress, to send a message that amnesty is available to those who enter illegally into the United States.”

Alex Cuic, an immigration lawyer and professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, told the BBC that while the action affected a “narrow group”, it marked a “start” for a segment of the US immigrant population that historically would face complications normalising their status in the country, even when eligible.

“A good majority of them [would have] to leave the country in order to come back lawfully,” he said. “It’s like they physically enter the US, but their immigration ‘soul’ doesn’t come with them.”

By allowing beneficiaries to parole in place, Mr Cuic added, officials “kill off the need to separate families” when one spouse needs to leave the country to apply for lawful permanent residence.

The application process is likely to be open by the end of summer, a senior administration official said on Monday.

The White House is also planning to ease and speed up the visa process for highly skilled undocumented immigrants who have received degrees from US universities or who have received a job offer in their field, including Dreamers.

Mr Biden’s announcement comes two weeks after he issued a sweeping executive action that allows US officials to quickly remove migrants entering the US illegally without processing their asylum requests.

That will happen once a daily threshold is met and the border is “overwhelmed”, the White House said in a statement.

The American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, sued the Biden administration last week, arguing that it violated US immigration law with the action.

At the time of the announcement, Mr Biden urged those who consider the measure “too strict” to “be patient”.

“[In] the weeks ahead, I will speak to how we can make our immigration system more fair and just,” he said.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, said that while the two announcements “don’t intersect with each other at all”, the more recent action may help the administration “get some positive headlines after the pushback” they received over the border announcement.

“The Biden administration has been receiving a lot of flak from people saying that their focus has all been on new arrivals, when there are so many long-term undocumented immigrants stuck trying to navigate our complicated immigration system,” he added.

“I think the actions you’ve seen the president taking over the last few weeks really go towards addressing both those concerns,” Mr Reichlin-Melnick added.

Fat Joe has claimed that Chris Brown’s 2009 attack on Rihanna cost him levels of fame

American rapper, Fat Joe has claimed that Chris Brown’s 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna cost him levels of fame and stardom Michael Jackson enjoyed at his career peak.

The rapper, 53, believes Brown’s violent attack overshadowed his talents after the singer, 35, assaulted Rihanna, 36, in a vehicle in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles after a pre-Grammys party on February 8, 2009.

‘If Chris Brown never got into the controversy with Rihanna, we would be calling him Michael Jackson right now,’ Fat Joe said on Instagram Live. ‘Not like Michael Jackson — Michael Jackson.’

The New York City native went on to described Chris Brown as ‘the most talented singer, artist, performer, hitmaker of our time.’

Fat Joe urged the public to forgive Brown for his past transgressions.

‘There’s nobody even close to Chris Brown, and it’s time we move past it,’ Fat Joe said. ‘It’s been 20-something years that I know of – there’s no more incidents. We gonna let this lifetime go by without saying the truth?’

‘What happens is, when the truth is an unpopular decision, everybody gets scared to say it,’ Fat Joe said. ‘They get canceled – especially famous people. But you know, the streets – they know what it is. Streets always know, they tell you the truth.’

Fat Joe pointed to the music of convicted sex offender R. Kelly, which he said remains popular despite the artist’s downfall.

‘The streets still bumping R. Kelly,’ he said. ‘He’s in jail, he did terrible things.’

Fat Joe said he feels the time has come to acknowledge Brown’s talents independent of his past transgressions.

‘What I’m tryna say is that it’s a shame that we lying,’ he said, ‘and we not giving it up to the king of R&B.

‘We be thinking he could battle Michael Jackson, that’s all I’m tryna say – I’m not lying – if you really look at his body of work and you look at all his hits, you see what he does,’ he said.

Fat Joe said that in no way does he accept what Brown did in 2009, but noted Brown was a ‘little kid’ at the age of 19 when the violent incident occurred.

Plastic surgeon has been arrested and charged in connection with his surgery-obsessed wife’s death on his operating table

0

A plastic surgeon has been arrested and charged in connection with his surgery-obsessed wife’s death on his operating table.

The victim, Hillary Brown, 33, went under the knife on November 21 at her husband Dr Ben Brown’s clinic, Restore Plastic Surgery, in Gulf Breeze Florida, before suffering a medical emergency in the middle of ‘several procedures.’

Dr. Brown, 40, was charged on Monday, June 17, with second-degree felony homicide: manslaughter by culpable negligence in connection with his wife’s death following an investigation by county and state officials.

Shocking details of her death have been revealed following an investigation by the state health department.

Dr. Brown’s wife was having a ‘miniature muscle plication/abdominal scar revision, bilateral arm liposuction, lip injections, and ear adjustment procedures’ performed on the day of the cardiac arrest.

The findings of the investigation, which led to an emergency restriction of his license – show that Hillary, who had no medical training, almost acted as a nurse for her own procedure.

Hillary is said to have spiked her own IV bag while taking a ‘handful’ of pills that included Valium.

Dr. Brown even allowed Hillary to suture her own skin after the initial procedure.

As her husband began to do liposuction on her arm, Hillary started to grow restless, when her feet suddenly started to twitch.

‘She stated that her vision started to blur, and she told Dr. Brown that she saw ‘orange,” the report claims.

However, her husband didn’t stop the procedure, continuing to inject substances into her face.

Her twitching only got worse, until she became unresponsive and began having a seizure, the medical board says.

A medical assistant asked Dr. Brown if they should call 911 and Dr. Brown said ‘no,” despite Hillary’s condition requiring a doctor to ‘transfer to a higher level of care’ after her seizure.

‘Over the next 10-20 minutes, a medical assistant asked Dr. Brown if they should call 911 and Dr. Brown said ‘no,’ or ‘wait.’ The medical assistant was scared and a new employee, so she did as Dr. Brown instructed.’

Dr. Brown didn’t just refuse to take Hillary to emergency care, he began to yell at his staff and asked her what she took.

He finally asked an assistant to dial 911 10 to 20 minutes after his wife’s seizure.

A mother of three young children from a previous marriage, Hillary Brown spent a week in a coma before she passed away, she was taken off life support when it was determined her brain had been starved of oxygen.

Brown passed away seven days after the fateful procedure on November 21, when she was rushed to hospital after Ben alerted 911 from his clinic at around 4:15pm.

‘Her cause of death was later determined to be ‘complications following lidocaine toxicity,’ the report states.

Ultimately, the board’s official ruling says the way he treated his own wife was ‘careless and haphazard.’

‘The level of disregard Dr. Brown paid to patient safety, even when the patient was his wife, indicates that Dr. Brown is unwilling or incapable of providing the appropriate level of care to his future patients,’ they wrote.

‘Dr. Brown’s most problematic violation during H.R.’s procedure was his failure to react swiftly in response to a serious medical emergency.’

Brown could face up to life in prison, life on probation, and a $10,000 fine if convicted of second-degree homicide.

Her husband’s clinic is reportedly also facing several separate medical malpractice lawsuits.

Brown’s father, Marty Ellington, told the Pensacola News Journal that he received a frantic phone call from Ben telling them to race to Florida from their home in Texas right away.

While saying her relationship with Ben had been volatile, Ellington said, she appreciated his career.

‘She was gorgeous. We kept telling her, ‘Why are you doing this?’ he recalled.

According to the Pensacola News Journal, deputies previously responded to a call at the couple’s $2.1 million Florida mansion in March, ‘in reference to a suicide.’

Ben reportedly told the dispatcher his wife was ‘barely conscious and still unresponsive due to self-medication with an unknown amount of Valium.’ Hillary admitted to taking the Valium but denied being suicidal, saying she just wanted her husband to know ‘she was serious.’

Florida landlord gunned down a family of four with young kids and burned their remains in the fire pit of the home

0

A Florida landlord gunned down a family of four with young kids and burned their remains in the fire pit of the home they shared, police said Tuesday, June 18.

Rory Atwood, 25, allegedly admitted to slaughtering the family — which included children aged 5 and 6 — after getting into a dispute with the parents, who he was friends with since high school.

“If there wasn’t evil in this world, we wouldn’t have to pray as much. And when I talk about this story today, you’re going to hear about evil,” Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco told reporters.

Atwood initially denied having any knowledge of the whereabouts of the Zilliot family, which included Rain Mancini, 26; Phillip Zilliot II, 25; and their young kids Karma and Phillip III, 6 and 5, respectively, Nocco said.

The family, who was staying at Atwood’s Hudson home, were reported missing Thursday, June 13, by Mancini’s mother after the mom-of-two failed to keep up their daily communications.

Atwood, a father himself, permitted investigators to search the property that same day, but detectives didn’t notice anything amiss other than the backyard firepit that was “actively smoldering and smoking,” the criminal complaint states.

The next day, a friend of Atwood told police that the landlord had called him the night prior and admitted to “killing his roommates and their children,” the document said.

Investigators returned to the property with cadaver dogs, which reportedly pulled “small skeletal remains,” soft tissue and two human vertebrae out of the fire pit. The back patio was also drenched in a strong chlorine odor.

Atwood, who initially claimed he kicked them out earlier over failure to pay rent, eventually buckled and confessed to killing the family.

According to his account, Zilliot II and Mancini stormed into the home Wednesday night, June 12, with both parents wielding knives. Zilliot II tried to use a knife on Atwood, his high school friend, but resorted to a fistfight when Atwood disarmed him, the accused killer claimed.

The landlord snapped when he saw Mancini using her knife to “poke” his own 4-year-old daughter in the throat, he told detectives.

They struggled over the knives and a firearm Zilliot II reportedly brought, with Atwood ultimately gaining control and firing it at both his former friends, according to court documents.

He did not disclose where the victims’ children were during the struggle, but told police he believes the parents killed their children.

Atwood later backtracked and said little Karma and Phillip’s bodies were also in the fire pit, but didn’t admit to killing them.

That’s when Atwood used his “adrenaline” to drag Zilliot II and Mancini’s bodies to the fire pit and into the flames he claims they started.

Investigators are still working to tie the family to the bodies found at the scene, but have charged Atwood in their deaths based on his testimony, Nocco said.

Atwood pleaded not guilty Monday, June 17, and is being held without bond, court records show.

woman who was raped by her father has won a payout and an apology from the police

0

A woman who was raped by her father has won a payout and an apology from the police after officers told her she would look like ‘the biggest slag going’ if she reported him to authorities.

Carol Higgins, 55, was sexually abused by her father, Elliot Appleyard, now 76, when she was 13 years old.

The mother-of-two first reported Appleyard to the police in 1985, and four more separate occasions stretching from 1984 to 2015. But it wasn’t until 2019 that he was jailed for 20 years for his crimes.

In 1985, Ms. Higgins said she was told by police it would ‘blacken her name’ if she pursued a prosecution and would be considered ‘the biggest slag going’.

She opened a civil court case against West Yorkshire Police four years ago – due to the way her case was handled between 2005 and 2019.

The force has now finally apologised for taking ‘too long’ to bring Appleyard to justice and paid Ms Higgins £15,000 in compensation.

The police finally apologised for ‘taking too long’ to bring Carol’s ‘extremely serious and truthful allegations’ in December 2023.

Carol, an author from Penistone, Barnsley, said: ‘The apology felt like a big relief, and a weight off my shoulders – after battling police for all this time.

‘I’m glad they’re making themselves accountable for how they treated me. It was a big thing, to have validation.

‘Living without that validation created a lot of negative energy inside me. Hopefully, now, I can let go of some of that anger.’

Appleyard raped the vulnerable teenager between 1983 and 1985, Leeds Crown Court heard in 2019.

A jury of seven women and four men took less than two hours to unanimously find Appleyard guilty of 15 charges following a seven-day trial.

The father-of-three was convicted of five counts of rape and 10 counts of indecent assault.

During the trial, Mr. Hampton, prosecuting, said the abuse had ‘destroyed all of her adult life’ and she had received counselling for many years.

He said Appleyard, of Denby Dale, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, ruled the household through violence and threats of beatings.

Jurors were shown a recorded police interview with Miss Higgins where she told officers her father ‘wanted to treat me like a wife’ and would ‘live together happily ever after’.

Ms Higgins said she was made to wear her father’s wife’s engagement ring.

Ms Higgins, who now lives in Ackworth, wrote an autobiography titled ‘Conquering the Impossible: Making the Dream Come True’ which was published in 2015.

Ms Higgins opened a civil court case – due to the way her case was handled between 2005 and 2019.

She went to the police twice, in 2005 and 2012 – before her case was finally investigated in 2015, and brought to trial in 2019.

As part of the settlement agreement, which included the written apology, Carol has been paid £15,000 by West Yorkshire Police.

The letter from John Robins, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, says: ‘I write as Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police to offer my sincere apology for the way in which you have been treated over the last 39 years.

‘It is accepted that your extremely serious and truthful allegations took too long to come to justice, resulting in the delay of the prosecution of your abuser and this was not your fault.

‘It is a matter of profound regret that it took so long for your abuser to be convicted.’

But Carol says no amount will ever be enough to make up for the last 39 years.

‘The apology is welcome,’ she added.

‘But I think the £15,000 is a bit of a p**stake for all that time, energy and all those years. I’m still feeling the effects of that child abuse, now.

‘I’m feeling the pain of not having a father – all that grief and loss. What price do you put on it, really?

‘I fought them and won – that’s how I stood up to them.’

West Yorkshire Police said: ‘The Chief Constable has apologised directly to the complainant on behalf of West Yorkshire Police and given his personal reassurance that the Force has learned from the mistakes made in her case.’

Joey Barton has agreed to pay Jeremy Vine £75,000 over social media posts in which he lied that the BBC presenter had a ‘sexual interest in children’

0

Former footballer and coach, Joey Barton has agreed to pay Jeremy Vine £75,000 over social media posts in which he lied that the BBC presenter had a ‘sexual interest in children’,

The former Manchester City and England player, 41, was also forced to share an online apology to Vine.

BBC Radio 2 host Vine, 59, launched legal action in response to the online taunt of ‘bike nonce’ made in January this year.

Barton, sacked as Bristol Rovers manager last October, has now confirmed his climbdown in a comment shared with his 2.8million followers on X, formerly Twitter.

He admitted responsibility for what he described as ‘defamation and harassment’.

Barton wrote this lunchtime: ‘Between 8 and 12 January 2024 I published 11 posts which accused Jeremy Vine of having a sexual interest in children, and created a hashtag which made the same allegations, which were viewed millions of times.

‘I recognise that this is a very serious allegation. It is untrue. I do not believe that Mr Vine has a sexual interest in children, and I wish to set the record straight.

‘I also published posts during the same period in which I referred to Mr Vine having advocated forced vaccination during the pandemic, based upon a video clip of his TV programme.

‘I accept that he did not advocate this policy and that the video clip has been edited to give a misleading impression of what he was in fact saying.

‘I then taunted and abused Mr Vine for bringing a legal complaint against me.

‘I have agreed not to make the same allegations again about Mr Vine and I apologise to him for the distress he has suffered.

‘To resolve his claims against me in defamation and harassment, I have agreed to pay Mr Vine £75,000 in damages and his legal costs.’

High Court judge Mrs Justice Steyn had ruled on May 24 that a social media post by Barton calling the broadcaster a ‘bike nonce’ was defamatory.

Barton had labelled Vine a ‘big bike nonce’ and a ‘pedo defender’.

The tirade of abuse came after Mr Vine questioned whether Mr Barton had a brain injury in response to a post where the footballer compared female football pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward to serial killers Fred and Rose West.

This led to Mr Barton launching a ‘calculated and sustained attack on Mr Vine’ in early January this year, the court heard.

Mr Barton published several posts over the following days and began using ‘#bikenonce’ on X, which led to it trending on the platform, the court was told.

Judge Steyn said in response: ‘The strong impression gained by the assertion the claimant is known as “aka bike nonce”, followed immediately by the further assertion that he is known as, again, “aka pedo defender”, is that the term “nonce” was being used in its primary meaning to allege the claimant has a sexual interest in children.

‘While I do not consider that the hypothetical reader, who would read the post quickly and move on, would infer a causative link, ie. that the claimant defends paedophiles because he shares the same propensity, the juxtaposition of the words “nonce” and “pedo” is striking and would reinforce the impression that the former was used in the sense of “paedophile”.

‘The reader would have understood that the word “bike” was a meaningless aspect of the accusation, serving only as an indication that this was a label attached to the claimant, who was known as a cyclist, without detracting from the operative word “nonce”.’

William McCormick, for Barton, had said the posts contained ‘vulgar abuse’ but did not libel Mr Vine and represented ‘someone who is posting in the heat of the moment’.

EDGAR LUNGU WAS CERTAINLY DEMOCRATIC, HH IS A DICTATOR- PRO Lumumba

Fellow Citizens,

This morning, I came across the latest remarks from Kenyan’s renowned constitutional lawyer and Pan Africanist, Professor Patrick Loche Lumumba concerning Zambia’s political leadership which caught my attention.

Speaking in Kenya yesterday at a radio show focusing on “democracy in Africa” as monitored by News24, the Kenyan distinguished lawyer said “everyone can now see that former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was a democrat and that Hichilema is a dictator”. Remember, this is Prof. Lumumba who was very critical of my leadership everywhere, praised President Hichilema in opposition and my administration even blocked him from entering Zambia between 2018 and 2020.

I have read that he was expressing his latest views on recent developments in our country where Zambia Police has been blocking public rallies for the opposition parties since 2021 as well as chasing non UPND political leaders from attending church services including the brutal invasion of the Catholic Church office in Kabwe where armed police went to search for me like a criminal. “It is very clear that Hichilema was all the time pretending to be a democrat”, Prof. Lumumba concluded.

From an honest comparison, I am happy to hear from Professor Lumumba that my efforts to promote and safeguard democracy in our motherland which were undermined then are now deemed to have been far much better when mirrored with HH’s UPND regime. When foreign scholars who at some point criticized you begin to appreciate your efforts on democracy promotion against the person they once deemed better, then it means that their feedback is morally noble and politically sincere.

In September, 2020, I remember Prof. Lumumba saying “President Edgar Lungu is intolerant, paranoid and a demagogue”. Today, I am happy to hear that the same Kenyan lawyer and Pan Africanist is saying “everyone can now see that former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was a democrat and that Hichilema is a full fledged dictator”. This gives me a sigh of relief as I am being vindicated for warning everyone that “you will appreciate me when I leave office”.

Therefore, I agree in totality with Professor Lumumba when he argues Zambians to find ways of terminating the mandate of Hichilema in 2026 because “he poses a danger to Zambia’s peace and Africa at large”. Remember, it is the first time since independence that under my successor, a brotherly nation, our own neighboring Zimbabwe now feels so insecure about Zambia because of wrong political leadership and foreign policies in Lusaka. 2026 should be marked as “a year to restore democracy and good neighborliness”.

When a person who praised you as ‘the hope and light of Zambia’ begins to describe you as “the worst dictator since Zambia’s independence”, then wisdom demands that you pose, listen and take a deep self reflection at once. President Hichilema must listen to “his former allies” like Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa, Bflow, Laura Miti, Brebner Changala, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu and Professor Patrick Lumumba himself and tone down on his authoritarian and law-fare politics. He is speedily losing stakeholders trust and public confidence both at home and abroad!

And if President Hichilema is to start walking democratic values, he will do better to stay away from political vengeance, bitterness, tribalism, regionalism, selective justice, weaponizing state agencies, suffocating free speech as well as start allowing opposition parties to freely conduct politics in public spaces. It is not by coincidence that Professor Patrick Lumumba, Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, Brebner Changala, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, Bflow or his Laura Miti are all complaining that “he is a dictator and a threat to national peace”.

Once more, I am happy to learn that many stakeholders at home and abroad now appreciating the fact that I was by far a democratic leader who meant well for Zambia than President HH who repeatedly promised to rule democratically better than me but has delivered and shown “the worst despotic politics so far”.

CAN FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU BE ARRESTED EVEN WITHOUT LIFTING HIS IMMUNITY?- PS THABO KAWANA

0

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

PS THABO KAWANA SHARES….

CAN FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU BE ARRESTED EVEN WITHOUT LIFTING HIS IMMUNITY?

Fellow citizens, this question keeps being posed to me every now and then and I have responded to it severally but still, some people persist.

So maybe tonight, let’s deal with it head on and conclusively.

Article 98 clause 1 and 4 of our Kanstitution (in Sangwa’s voice) or Constitution talks about immunity from both civil and criminal proceedings.

Article 98 clause 9 talks about no more immunity even for things that one may have done whilst in office when Parliament removes immunity upon establishing a primafacie case against such a one or Former President if you like.

Given the above, if Former President Lungu is to be arrested for anything he may have done whilst in office whether civil or criminal, such an arrest cannot be effected without lifting the immunity because he has that immunity with him which remains and follows him even after leaving office but covering his tenure in office.

Meaning and again I emphasize, he has immunity for the duration of the time he held office and the things he may have done whether civil or criminal in nature.

However, if Former President Lungu commits an offense today, for example ngati Adada ba menya muntu mbama, Kofi olo nkonyo, he WILL be arrested and charged for the applicable assault charge. This also remains true for any transgression on any Law of our Land.

So let’s read the constitution and understand it and avoid this insatiable appetite of wanting to hold on to what is not factual by claiming that Former President Lungu has immunity and cannot be arrested today if he breaks the Law.

As this is the second time I am posting about this issue, I hope it is the last. I hope tanvela tonse since palibe chigayo apa.

Finally, to answer the question in the heading, the answer is YES. FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU CAN BE ARRESTED EVEN WITHOUT LIFTING HIS IMMUNITY IF HE COMMITS AN OFFENCE OR BREAKS THE LAW TODAY.

TO THE PASTORS FELLOWSHIP

AT THE

TRINITY EMBASSY CHURCH INTERNATIONAL

15th June 2024

I am honored to have this opportunity to interact with such an august gathering.

Interaction between civic, political and religious leaders is very important. Society is healthier when there is constant dialogue, interaction and respect between these groupings. Respect is the keyword to make this interaction and dialogue to bear fruit and be successful.

I note that today your chosen theme is “THE YEAR OF LOOKING UP TO GOD”.

We as UKA accepted your invitation because we look upto you as our spiritual leaders. It is therefore fitting that your theme asks us to look up to God. We have come so that you can point out to us what we should look out for.

WE AS POLITICIANS LOOK UPTO YOU. Your role is to teach us how to look upto God.

So what will God show us? We have to turn to Micah 6:8.

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – MICAH 6 : 8

Politics involves the complex interactions of individuals, groups, and institutions shaping the direction of society, allocating resources, and exercising power. It influences our lives, communities, and the world at large. You have to direct not only us the politicians but others such as civil society on how to look upto God.

What are the aims and objectives of these different groups after all?

WHAT ARE

FIVE

MAIN OBJECTS OF POLITICIANS?

The main objectives of politicians beliefs, values, and positions, when properly guided,include;

Representing the people’s interests

Creating and implementing policies for the betterment of society

Addressing social issues and promoting equality

Promoting the public’s well-being.

Conflict resolution through mediating and resolving disputes between different groups or interests by building alliances, compromising, and finding common ground with opponents.

WHAT ARE

FIVE

MAIN OBJECTS OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS?

The main objective of civic organizations is to promote the common good and public interest by:
Advocating for and defending social justice and human rights

Holding those in power accountable

Building inclusive and equitable communities for economic justice

Encouraging civic engagement and participation in democratic processes

Helping different interest groups build consensus

Overall, civic organizations aim to create positive social change and improve the lives of individuals and communities.

WHAT ARE

FIVE

MAIN OBJECTS OF CHRISTIANITY

Some of the important objectives of Christianity in society are:

Serving the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable.

Advocating for justice, equality, and human rights.

Fostering reconciliation, peace, and conflict resolution.

Promoting social justice and human dignity

Building bridges between different communities and denominations.

SHOULD THE CLERGY BE NON PARTISAN?

There is no doubt that the clergy should be nonpartisan. Christians should however have a very strong bias towards achieving the main objectives of Christianity. Christians should demonstrate God’s love in practical ways by strongly advocating for and practicing the core objectives of Christianity.

The clergy need to keep on doing what they have done in the past and as directed by the Scriptures..

WHAT DO THE SCRIPTURES SAY?

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly ; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

PROVERBS 31 8-9

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.“

ISAIAH 1 : 17

Some people say men of the cloth should not be involved in politics . You hear some of them warning that “politics is a dirty game.”

I agree that it often is. This is the very reason men of the cloth should get involved in politics; to clean up our politics!

WHAT HAVE RELIGIOUS LEADERS DONE IN THE PAST?

Throughout history, several religious leaders have excelled in politics, leaving a significant impact on their respective nations and the world. Here are a few examples:

You can go as far back in history as 1160-1216 when Pope Innocent III played a crucial role in shaping European politics, negotiating treaties, and resolving conflicts between kingdoms.

Centuries later in the 1600s Cardinal Richelieu, who was a French Catholic priest, served as King Louis XIII’s chief minister, transforming France into a centralized state and shaping European politics.

It is not only the Catholics but other Christian denominations have played a role in politics. Calvin, a Protestant French theologian and pastor, played a key role in the Protestant Reformation, shaping the political and religious landscape of Europe.

It is not only in Europe or amongst Christians that you see religious leaders fighting for people’s rights. The Dalai Lama who is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, has been a prominent advocate for Tibetan rights, non-violence, and interfaith dialogue, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

Archbishop Makarios III navigated Cyprus through the country’s desire for independence and the desire of Britain, Greece and Turkey to retain control of Cyprus, or parts of it.

These religious leaders demonstrated significant political acumen, influencing the course of history and leaving lasting legacies.

Some people will say “Ifyo fya ba sungu !”. There are a good number of black clergymen who have met the call for fighting for justice.

Several clergymen played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, using their religious leadership to advocate for racial equality and social justice.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968): A Baptist minister and leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), he became the iconic face of the Civil Rights Movement, advocating nonviolent civil disobedience and delivering powerful speeches, including the famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Rev. Andrew Young a Methodist minister and civil rights leader, worked closely with Dr. King and later became a congressman, ambassador, and mayor of Atlanta.
Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth a Baptist minister and civil rights activist, survived numerous attempts on his life and continued to fight for equality in Birmingham, Alabama.

Rev. Jesse Jackson is a prominent American civil rights activist, politician, and Baptist minister who has played a significant role in the struggle for civil rights and social justice. Some of his key roles and achievements include:

Rev. Al Sharpton who’s work has been focused on addressing systemic racism, police brutality, and social inequality, and he remains a key figure in the modern civil rights movement’s struggle for civil rights and social justice. Rev. Sharpton fought valiantly for the killers of George Floyd to face justice.

These clergymen, along with many others, used their religious platforms to challenge segregation, discrimination, and inequality, significantly contributing to the progress of the Civil Rights Movement.

Some of you may say that is in America and not Africa. There are some religious figures here in Africa, who were involved in the anti-apartheid struggle like Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

South African Catholic Bishops Conference: The group used affidavits for a book, Police Conduct During Township Protests in 1984, as a way of circumventing censorship.

South African Clergy ‘illegally’ married mixed-race couples as an act of defiance against the Prevention of Mixed Marriages Act.

Reverend Allan Boesak is a South African clergyman and theologian rose to prominence in the 1980s as an outspoken critic of the National Party’s apartheid policies.

Some of you may say that is in South Africa and not Zambia. Well this has happened in Zambia on many occasions. We have had men of the cloth involve themselves in politics like Reverend Isaac Mumpashya.

Reverend Isaac Mumpasha is a former politician and diplomat who served as a freedom fighter and veteran politician leading upto the 1964 liberation. Later on in life he played a significant role in fighting for the return to multiparty system in the 1990s.

WHAT CAN ZAMBIAN RELIGIOUS LEADERS DO FROM NOW ON?

The five main objectives of politicians, civil society and Christianity set out above are uncannily similar. Their objectives can be distilled as being;

Serving the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable

Advocating for justice, equality, and human rights

Fostering reconciliation, peace, and conflict resolution

Building bridges between different communities and denominations

Giving a voice to the voiceless

Christians aim to demonstrate God’s love in practical ways. The main way is, not by being quiet but, by promoting social justice and human dignity to encourage personal transformation and spiritual growth.

These objectives are indeed rooted in biblical teachings and the example of Jesus Christ, who modeled a life of love, compassion, and service to others. By living out these values, Christians seek to make a positive impact in the world and bring glory to God.

These objectives are based on biblical teachings and the example of Jesus Christ, who came to serve, love, and redeem humanity. Jesus Christ did not sit back and remain quiet in face of inequity and injustice.

Speak out against injustice. As Proverbs 31:8-9 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Zambian clergy figures can become the next local Reverend Mumpashya. They can become the next international Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Desmond Tutu or Reverend Martin Luther King Junior.

Clearly there is no need for the clergy today to shy away from commenting on social matters and fulfilling their calling to seek justice and make a positive impact in the world leading to bringing glory to God.

The main objectives of politicians beliefs, values, and positions, when properly guided,include;

The five main objectives of politicians, civil society and Christianity set out above are uncannily similar. Their objectives can be distilled as being;

AMEN

I WOULD RATE ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY STATUS UNDER THE UPND AT 2/10 – MUKANDILA

….as he laments the abuse of the law, violation of people’s rights and freedoms

Lusaka… Tuesday, June 18, 2024 ( SMART EAGLES)

Lusaka Lawyer and Matero Strongman Celestine Mambula Mukandila says there is a selective application of justice under the UPND regime.

And Mr. Mukandila said there is several breakdown of the rule of law which has put the country’s democracy under serious threat.

Speaking when he featured on Lusaka Radio program dubbed ‘Matters of national interest’, Monday, Mukandila rated the country’s democracy to 2 out of 10.

“Looking at the overview of our democracy status in Zambia, would rate it at a good 2/10 and the reason is very simple because apparently, our democratic space has continued to shrink to levels that I think have become too apparent. I think also the Zambian people are seeing what is going on. Zambian people are subjected to their human rights being violated by the regime. By the regime I mean Hakainde Hichilema led regime,” he said.

He further said the country has lost its freedom of association under the UPND regime.

“We have a situation where the freedom of association, assembly, speech is being carteled day in and day out by the Hakainde led regime police. So, it has become a point of worry. Political parties in opposition are being threatened with arrests, freedom of assembly are not being granted or enjoyed and these constitutionally guarantee human rights. Unfortunately, what we are seeing is a total violation of the constitution,” he added.

Mr Mukandila said the UPND has not only arrested opposition leader but journalists as well.

“What we are seeing in the UPND is a complete abuse of the law and abuse of the power by arresting the fourth estate where journalist is also being threatened. Journalist are even scared to move with these politicians because they will be equally arrested,” he said.

He condemned the act by the police to block the former president from worshiping on the Copperbelt.

“Why should it be a trend that whenever president Lungu goes to pray, he should be blocked and surrounded by police. Can there be freedom of worship in the country? It’s sad that the church which is supposed to be a safe place is now being guarded by police just because the opposition leader is present,” said Mukandila.

EDGAR LUNGU SHOULD NOT BE PROUD HIS BRUTAL LEADERSHIP – SIMANGOLWA

0

EDGAR LUNGU SHOULD NOT BE PROUD HIS BRUTAL LEADERSHIP – SIMANGOLWA

Under the reigns of the Patriotic Front (PF) led by Edgar Lungu, we saw citizens being killed, tortured, brutalized and jailed for simply belonging to a different political. Joseph Kaunda and Nsama Nsama were shot in cold blood in a bid to stop UPND from offering solidarity to their leader. Today Edgar Lungu can freely move around Lusaka CBD and his cadres are freely offering solidarity during court cases. Can he surely do that in full scale authoritarian rule?

Do you remember the Sesheke by-election? How Hakainde Hichilema was made to hide in the bush whilst the police fired live bullets? Is that what Edgar Lungu calls faults? That was a full scale dictatorship. Lungu must stop teasing citizens, we still have UPND members who are moving with bullets in the legs resulting from Edgar Lungu’s intolerant type of leadership.

Edgar Lungu was not tolerant to divergent views. We saw media houses like Prime TV and the Post newspaper being closed for simply covering the opposition political parties. Was that just a fault or a well calculated move to suppress the opposition? What we saw under the reigns of Edgar Lungu were not just faults but full scale dictatorship. Lungu never made any mistakes, everything was well calculated to suppress citizens.

Gassing of citizens was not ‘just a fault’ it was a calculated move aimed at putting the blame on the opposition. The tribalism agenda was not ‘just a fault’ but a serious move to divide the country for political expediency. Attacking radio stations even when HH was giving a phone interview was not just a fault but full scale dictatorship.

Edgar Lungu should not trivialize the damage he caused to this country. Lungu divided the country and never tolerated any divergent views. He created a torture chamber ‘Kamugodi’ just to brutalize his political opponent so today he cannot portray himself as an angel. We have children growing up without their parents because they were slain during Edgar’s reign. Edgar has so much blood on his hands.

Edgar Lungu should apologize for what he did to this country not teasing citizens. Bloodshed was normal to Patriotic Front members. This is a political party which armed its members with machetes and guns to attack and injure innocent citizens. That was not just a fault! Edgar Lungu has no moral right to even comment on democracy because he has never believed in democracy himself. You can’t be a dictator and cry for democratic treatment.

Zambia was very peaceful before Edgar Lungu returned to politics. We never saw any abduction or politics of insults and propaganda. But slowly our country is being taken back to the brutal days of PF. Lawlessness is slowly creeping in and criminals are slowly regrouping. We urge President Hakainde Hichilema to be firm in protecting the peace and unity of this country. Lawlessness, tribalism or any violence should not be tolerated at cost. Maintaining law and can not be compared to authoritarian rule. Zambia is bigger than Edgar and his followers.

WE WILL NOT GIVE CHANCE TO THOSE WHO DESTROYED COPPERBELT PROVINCE TO BOUNCE BACK – ELISHA MATAMBO

This afternoon,we were happy to meet United Party for National Development (UPND) officials drawn from all structures in Kitwe District where we urged them not to give chance to those who destroyed Copperbelt Province and beyond to bounce back.

We further urged our officials that as Copperbelt Province,we will not allow any person coming to divide this country again. We alerted our officials to be on the lookout and block all the holes where the snake is trying to show its ugly head.

This engagement meeting was held this afternoon at UPND District Office in Kitwe on the Copperbelt. We implored our officials to get back to the grassroots and re-emphasised that those who destroyed this country and their cahoots will never bounce back to power.

The meeting was also aimed at comparing notes as we embark on a serious party mobilisation ahead of 2026 General Election. It was also meant to audit all party structures in Kitwe District. We compared notes on various issues including the flow of information at all levels while working hand-in-hand to grow the party.

During this meeting we also launched motor bikes and bicycles which His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema donated to help our party officials from all structures in terms of party mobilisation ahead of 2026 General Election. These donated motor bikes and bicycles will further help our party officials to re-energize as we fire-up all cylinders in our party mobilisation drive.

We encouraged our party officials to continue rallying behind His Excellency the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema as well as keep talking and defending our Head of State because he is determined to delivering development to the people in all sectors of our economy on the Copperbelt and beyond.

We reiterated our position as a party that structures are critical and should never be left behind because these are the nerve center of the party and they need to be supported as we continue to walk side by side with the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema for Zambia’s economic development.

RESTRICTIONS ON CIVIL SERVANTS’ USE OF GOVT MOTOR VEHICLES- Fred M’membe

RESTRICTIONS ON CIVIL SERVANTS’ USE OF GOVT MOTOR VEHICLES

The directive by Secretary to the Cabinet Mr Patrick Kangwa that restricts civil servants in the mainstream civil service to use allocated government motor vehicles only for official business between 08:00 and 17:00 hours is certainly contentious and raises several concerns.

Firstly, the policy may indeed be seen as discriminatory against those in the mainstream civil service, especially if other branches or departments are not subject to similar restrictions. Those in parastatals and quasi-government institutions receive a vehicle maintenance allowance, enabling them to maintain personal vehicles. These groups can also procure personal vehicles through the Public Service Microfinance scheme, a benefit that is not extended to mainstream civil servants.

Secondly, the directive could negatively impact service delivery. Civil servants who rely on government vehicles for commuting might face difficulties in getting to work punctually or attending to urgent matters outside regular business hours. This could lead to delays in the execution of their duties and overall inefficiency in the civil service.

Thirdly, the requirement for civil servants to use public transportation or their own vehicles to commute could impose additional financial and logistical burdens on them. This might reduce morale and potentially lead to lower productivity.

To address these issues, the government might consider several actions but not limited to the following:

1. Uniform Policy Application
Ensuring that the policy is applied uniformly across all branches of the greater public service to avoid perceptions of discrimination.

2. Compensation and Support
Providing allowances or compensations to those who are now required to use their own vehicles or public transportation for commuting.

3. Operational Flexibility
Allowing for some flexibility in the use of government vehicles, especially in cases where civil servants need to work outside of regular hours or handle emergencies.

4. Monitoring and Review
Continuously monitoring the impact of the policy on service delivery and making adjustments as necessary to ensure it does not adversely affect the efficiency and effectiveness of the civil service.

While the intent behind the policy may be to reduce misuse of government vehicles and cut costs, it is crucial that its implementation does not undermine the ability of civil servants to perform their duties effectively.

VJ URGES ZAMBIANS TO COEXIST

Veteran politician, Vernon Mwaanga has reiterated the need for all Zambians to embrace the one Zambia one nation motto as the country marks its 60th independence in October this year,

Mr Mwaanga also underscored the need for every citizen to embrace late first Republican President Kenneth Kaunda’s (KK) ideology of upholding peace and oneness, as well as celebrating those who sacrificed their own lives during the independence struggle.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka recently, Mr Mwaanga said the one Zambia one nation motto, is a slogan which is aimed at bringing all the 73 ethnic tribes together, and that as the country clocks 60 years, Zambians must learn to coexist.

He observed that Zambia under KK did not know about tribes but believed in oneness and unity regardless of which region one was coming from and has since called on everyone to embrace unity and peace, for the country to realise meaningful development.

“Indeed 60 years is a long time as many Patriotic people sacrificed their lives to attain independence, where some of them died and others became disabled all their lives, some of the people went to jail, so it is time to remember those people as we celebrate 60 years of independence,” he said.

He observed that Zambia is where it is today, because of the Patriotic citizens like KK and others that sacrificed their lives to liberate mother Zambia.

Mr Mwaanga further stated that it is pleasing that for 60 years the country has lived in peace with neighbours because during KK’s reign, each time some perceived differences occurred between Zambia and neighbouring countries, KK used to assign him to visit that country to settle the matter.

He added that the one Zambia one nation motto is not just a slogan but must be practiced by living and working together as opposed to engaging in tribal and hate speeches based on tribe.

The veteran politician explained that as the country attains 60 years, there is a need for everyone to promote peace and unity as well as oneness because that is what the forefathers proclaimed.

And former Nigerian President Olusegan Obasanjo, urged Zambians to continue upholding KK’s principles of serving humanity as opposed to serving oneself, and that as Zambia marks 60 years of independence, there is a need to exercise love for one another.

He noted that one cannot claim to love God if he fails to love a fellow human being, saying celebrating 60 year must be a reminder for all Zambians to continue championing the ideology of humanism which late founding father KK and other sons of the soil stood for.

“Zambian people must continue to live a life for others as the country celebrates 60 years of independence, KK has set an example to live above self. I expect all Zambians, Nigerians and other nations to impact other people’s livelihoods,” he said.

He praised KK for fighting for Zambia’s independence and other countries on the Continent and that Zambians will never forget him for what he did for the country and the Continent at large.

Zambia will in October this year, celebrate 60 years of independence under the theme “ 60 years strong, honouring our heritage, embracing the future.

A woman imprisoned for more than four decades for murder in the US has been found innocent

A woman imprisoned for more than four decades for murder in the US has been found innocent.

Sandra ‘Sandy’ Hemme, 63, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment after the slaying of 31-year-old Patricia Jeschke in 1980, but will now be released or retried within the next 30 days.

A judge overturned the conviction after her attorneys revealed how the crime was likely committed by a now-discredited cop who died in 2015.

Woman has murder conviction overturned after 43 years in prison as it

Hemme was cuffed after she made statements to other cops in St Joseph while sedated, incriminating herself in the process.

Cops, while doing this, exploited her mental illness, coercing her into making false statements while she was on meds meant to treat a psychotic break, Judge Ryan Horsman said, citing how the suspect was also threatened with the death penalty.

The only evidence linking Ms. Hemme to the crime was that of her own inconsistent, disproven statements, which were taken while she was in psychiatric crisis and physical pain,’ he said in the order reversing the ruling.

In contrast, ‘this court finds that the evidence directly ties [then-police officer Michael] Holman to this crime and murder scene’, Horsman added – pointing to the compelling new evidence presented by Hemme’s attorneys in February 2023.

He said prosecutors, at the time, failed to disclose such evidence – which he said would have helped Hemme’s defense most definitely.

He added that her trial counsel fell ‘below professional standards’ as a result, paving the way for the injustice.

The cop in question died in 2015, after being fired from the St Joseph force for falsely reporting that his pickup truck had been stolen and collecting an insurance payout a month after Jeschke, a local library worker, was found stabbed to death.

It was the same truck his fellow officer spotted near the crime scene, leading them to hone in on the suspect.

The officer also tried to use Jeschke’s credit card at a Kansas City camera store the same day her body was discovered, and went on to issue an alibi that he spent the night with a woman at a nearby motel in response.

This, however, could not be confirmed, though Hemme was still treated as the prime suspect.

Holman, on the other hand, said he found the card in a purse discarded in a ditch, spurring a raid of his home by fellow officers – during which they found a pair of gold horseshoe-shaped earrings, along with jewelry stolen from another woman during a burglary earlier that year.

Afterwards, Jeschke’s father came forward claiming he recognized the earrings as a pair he bought for his daughter, but the investigation into Holman still ended abruptly, four days later.

Many of these details, officials said Friday, were uncovered later and never given to Hemme’s attorneys – enough to classify it as a miscarriage of justice more than 40 years after the case grabbed headlines.

It started on November 13, 1980, when Jeschke failed to show up for work, leading her mother to climb through the window of her locker apartment to discover he nude body surrounded by blood.

Her hands were tied behind her back with a telephone cord and a pair of pantyhose wrapped around her throat, with a freshly used knife left under her head.

A search ensued for the librarian’s killers, with Hemme surfacing as a suspect within the next two weeks.

She had been discharged from a mental hospital the day before Jeschke’s body was found, and showed up nearly two weeks later at the home of a nurse who once treated her, carrying a knife and refusing to leave.

Police, at that point, found her in a closet, returning her to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she would soon become a suspect.

Citing the timing of these hospitalizations, cops began interrogating Hemme, during which she was being plied with antipsychotic drugs.

Her attorneys pointed out this was the latest in a string of hospitalizations that began when Hemme started hearing voices at the age of 12, and saw cops note she seemed ‘mentally confused’ and not fully able to comprehend their questions at the time.

‘Each time the police extracted a statement from Ms. Hemme it changed dramatically from the last, often incorporating explanations of facts the police had just recently uncovered,’ her attorneys wrote.

Eventually, she claimed to have watched a man named Joseph Wabski kill Jeschke, after meeting Wabski when they stayed in the state hospital’s detoxification unit at the same time.

He was quickly charged with capital murder, but prosecutors within days dropped the case upon learning he was at an alcohol treatment center in Topeka, Kansas, at the time.

Upon learning this, Hemme cried and she was the lone killer – right around the time cops began looking into Holman.

He, however, made it off the hook and was merely fired, while prosecutors proceeded with their case against Hemme anyway.

While imprisoned awaiting trial, she wrote to her parents on Christmas Day 1980, ‘Even though I’m innocent, they want to put someone away, so they can say the case is solved.’ She said she might as well change her plea to guilty.

‘Just let it end,’ she added at the time. ‘I’m tired.’

The following spring, she agreed to plead guilty to capital murder in exchange for the death penalty being taken off the table.

Her attorneys presented these oversights involving the case a year and a half ago, after which the Missouri Court of Appeals scheduled an evidentiary hearing on January 16, 2024.

The hearing was held over the course of three days. during which former detective Steven Fueston stated he stopped one of the police interviews of Hemme because ‘she didn’t seem totally coherent’

Horshman, in turn, delivered his ruling Friday, chiding the department while doing so.

Larry Harman, a local judge who helped Hemme get her initial guilty plea thrown out e, said in the petition how he believed she was innocent.

‘The system,’ he said, ‘failed her at every opportunity.’

We would hold peace talks tomorrow if Russia leaves Ukrainian territory – Zelensky

Ukraine would hold peace talks “tomorrow” if Russia pulls out of all Ukrainian territory, Volodymyr Zelensky said in a response to Russian President, Vladimir Putin at a peace summit in Switzerland.

The two-day summit held to accelerate efforts to stop the war in Ukraine ended on Sunday, June 16 with dozens of countries committing to Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

tnediserRussian P Putin mocked the summit as “just another ploy to divert everyone’s attention, reverse the cause and effect of the Ukrainian crisis [and] set the discussion on the wrong track”.

China, the country’s biggest ally, declined to attend, which assured the summit would fail to achieve Ukraine‘s goal of persuading major countries from the “global South” to join in isolating Russia.

Despite 90 countries attending the two-day conference, they failed to persuade major non-aligned states to join their final statement, and no country came forward to host another meeting.

Still, the conference gave Kyiv a chance to showcase the support from Western allies that it says it needs to keep fighting a far bigger enemy.

“We are responding to Russia‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine not only with a full-scale defence of human life but also with full-scale diplomacy,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky added: “Russia can start negotiations tomorrow if they pull out of our territories.”

Zelensky’s response comes after Putin promised on Friday to “immediately” order a ceasefire in Ukraine and start negotiations if Kyiv began withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and renounced plans to join NATO.

Zelensky rejected what he called an ultimatum by Putin to surrender more territory.

The event included presidents and prime ministers from France, Germany, Britain, Japan, Poland, Argentina, Ecuador, Kenya and Somalia. The Vatican was also represented, and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke for the United States.

India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates – which were represented by foreign ministers or lower-level envoys – were among the countries that did not sign the final document, which focused on issues of nuclear safety, food security and the exchange of prisoners.

Brazil, an “observer” of the conference, did not sign on, but Turkey did.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Union’s executive Commission, said the conference was rightly titled “Path to Peace” because peace won’t be achieved in a single step.

“It was not a peace negotiation because Putin is not serious about ending the war. He is insisting on capitulation. He is insisting on ceding Ukrainian territory – even territory that today is not occupied by him,” she said.

“He is insisting on disarming Ukraine, leaving it vulnerable to future aggression. No country would ever accept these outrageous terms.”

Greek coastguard responsible for the deaths of dozens of migrants

The Greek coastguard is responsible for the deaths of dozens of migrants crossing the Mediterranean who were forced to turn back or in some cases were deliberately thrown overboard, an investigation has found.

More than 40 people traversing the Mediterranean on small boats are said to have died due to the Greek coastguard’s activities, which included forcing punctured vessels to go back out to sea.

Nine of those people are believed to have died after they were deliberately pushed into the water by coastguard officers, according to eyewitnesses from NGOs, local media and the Turkish coastguard, which often receive migrants turned away by Greece.

It comes just days after hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Athens on Friday to mark the first anniversary of a shipwreck that killed hundreds more migrants off Greece, demanding answers about the causes of the disaster and the fate of relatives.

Up to 700 migrants from Pakistan, Syria, and Egypt were crammed into the fishing trawler ‘Adriana’ bound for Italy from Libya that capsized off southwestern Greece on June 14 last year, even though the Greek coast guard had been monitoring it for hours.

Some 104 people were rescued, but only 82 bodies were recovered.

The catastrophe, one of the worst Mediterranean boat disasters on record, raised searching questions about how the European Union is trying to stem flows of migrants – and the actions of Greece’s coastguard.

The investigation, published this week by the BBC, found at least 40 migrants died due to the actions of the Greek coastguard in 15 incidents across three years between May 2020 – 2023.

It spoke with several migrants who suffered maltreatment at the hands of coastguard officers and police, as well as others who witnessed the deaths of fellow migrants who were thrown into the water even after having reached land.

A Cameroonian man who reached Greece told BBC investigators how a man from the Ivory Coast drowned in front of him after being thrown back into the sea.

‘We had barely docked, and the police came from behind. There were two policemen dressed in black, and three others in civilian clothes. They were masked, you could only see their eyes.’

‘They started with the [other] Cameroonian. They threw him in the water. The Ivorian man said: ”Save me, I don’t want to die…”

‘Then eventually only his hand was above water, and his body was below. Slowly his hand slipped under, and the water engulfed him.’

A Somali migrant claimed Greek officers zip-tied his hands before shoving him into the water off the back of a boat, while a man from Syria shared how several children drowned after the coastguard left them near Turkey in damaged rafts.

‘We immediately began to sink, they saw that… They heard us all screaming, and yet they still left us,’ he told the BBC.

‘By the morning seven or eight children had died.’

A Texas megachurch pastor has admitted previously having “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” after being accused of repeatedly molesting a family friend starting when she was just 12.

Robert Morris, the founder of Gateway Church in Southlake and a one-time spiritual adviser for Donald Trump, confessed after Cindy Clemishire told the Wartburg Watch that she was groomed for abuse from the age of 12 and it continued for four years until she was 16.

“When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying,” he told the Christian Post.

Referring to her as a “young lady” appalled his accuser who insisted she was just a girl.

“It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong,” said the pastor, whose church attracts an estimated 100,000 worshippers each week.

“This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years,” he added.

He said the abuse “came to light” in 1987 and “it was confessed and repented of.”

Morris claims he “submitted” to church elders and Clemishire’s dad — who was head of the church he belonged to at the time — who all “asked me to step out of ministry and receive counseling and freedom ministry, which I did.

“Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area,” he claimed.

Clemishire said she was “appalled” by his description of her as a “young lady.”

Texas megachurch pastor admits engaging in ?inappropriate sexual behavior? after being accused of abusing 12-year-old girl repeatedly

“I was 12 years old. I was a little girl. A very innocent little girl. And he was brought into our home,” the now 54-year-old grandmother told the Christian Post of abuse that took her “decades to wrap my brain around as an adult.”

“I was an innocent 12-year-old little girl who knew nothing about sexual behavior,” she said.

Clemishire was also outraged at the suggestion her dad had given Morris his blessing to return to ministry.

“My father never ever gave his blessing on Robert returning to ministry!” she said.

“My father told him he’s lucky he didn’t kill him. I am mortified that he is telling the world my dad gave his blessing!”

Clemishire said Morris repeatedly abused her in both Texas and Oklahoma, telling his wife at the time that he was merely providing her “counseling” during the abuse.

She recalled eventually confiding to a friend about what was happening, with the friend encouraging her to tell her family.

She says when her father found out he told the lead pastor if Morris didn’t “get out of ministry” he would get the police involved.

Morris stepped away for two years.

“Of course, we forgive because we are called to biblically forgive those who sin against us. But that does not mean he is supposed to go on without repercussions,” she added.

She tried to file a lawsuit against Morris in 2005, but Morris’ attorney suggested she caused the abuse because she was “flirtatious.”

They eventually offered her $25,000 if she signed a non-disclosure agreement, but she declined.

Elders at Gateway Church told Christian Post stood by Morris, saying he has been biblically restored to ministry after confessing.

“Pastor Robert has been open and forthright about a moral failure he had over 35 years ago when he was in his twenties and prior to him starting Gateway Church. He has shared publicly from the pulpit the proper biblical steps he took in his lengthy restoration process,” they said.

The church added that since the two-year restoration process, Morris has committed “no other moral failures.”

“Pastor Robert has walked in purity, and he has placed accountability measures and people in his life,” they added.

“The matter has been properly disclosed to church leadership.”
