TikToker Caleb Coffee hospitalized after Falling off cliff in Hawaii

0

Caleb Coffee, 18, was hospitalized Aug. 16 after falling off a cliff during a hike in Hawaii with three friends, according to a GoFundMe page created by his sister Peyton Coffee.

The page states that Caleb slipped off a 60 to 80-foot bluff and landed on lava rocks during the trek. He was then airlifted to the emergency room, where he was treated for a spinal fracture and broken femur, elbow and wrist.

Caleb—who has 11 million followers on TikTok—also experienced “multiple gouges and burns throughout his entire body,” according to the page.

“We don’t know the full extent of his injuries yet,” Peyton said. “He also hasn’t been able to hold down food. The medics have informed us more injuries will most likely pop up over the next few weeks.”

His dad Jason Coffee posted an update Aug. 17, sharing on his Instagram Story that Caleb remains stable and conscious. Jason noted that his son is “talking and in good spirits.”

“He has a small break in his neck (he has full motion in his toes and fingers). He has a broken femur (surgery placed a rod through it), 2 plates & 10 screws in his right elbow, a fractured left wrist, stitches in his forehead and lip,” he wrote. “He just had another MRI to take a closer look at his neck.”

Jason also took time to thank followers for their kind messages amid the influencer’s medical emergency.

“I want to thank everyone for all your love and support. It truly feels like family. We love you all,” he added. “Please continue praying. It looks like it’s going to be a long road to recovery but Caleb is strong and we know he’s going to get through this! It truly is a Miracle he is alive.”

Caleb—who frequently posts photos of his outdoor adventures, workout routines and funny family moments—moved to the Aloha State in May.

“I’m moving back to Hawaii!! Goodbye Texas,” he announced on Instagram earlier this year. “I’m really going to miss all of the wonderful people I was able to meet and get close to during my time in Texas.also thank you to everyone who has supported me in this season of my life I love you all and wish you the best!”

Since the relocation, Caleb changed his page’s bio to read: “Living life to the fullest in Hawaii.”

Doubts abound over Zim poll credibility

REGIONAL blocs and international organisations have cast doubt over Zimbabwe’s commitment to hold free and fair elections, citing human rights violations and what they described as a shrinking democratic space.

Frontrunners in the polls set for Wednesday next week include the incumbent, President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his closest rival, Nelson Chamisa.

Chamisa leads the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), but fronted the MDC Alliance in the 2018 elections, before a combination of official trickery, armed police and soldiers took the name away from him, and forced him out of the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House, formerly Harvest House, which had served as the bastion of opposition politics in the country since 1999.

He has already complained about an uneven playing field.

Mnangagwa’s narrow victory in the 2018 election had to be confirmed by the courts after a bruising campaign that left the country polarised.

According to analysts, the fissures have widened in the run-up to next week’s polls after Chamisa refused to acknowledge Mnangagwa’s legitimacy.

Mnangagwa has preached peace in church gatherings and at his star rallies countrywide.

But in a statement to the Zimbabwe Independent yesterday, Amnesty International (AI) said it was worried about “brutal crackdowns on human rights”.

It said credibility of the polls had been compromised by the “criminalisation” of state critics.

“What we have seen in Zimbabwe over the past five years amounts to a brutal crackdown on human rights, especially the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association,” Khanyo Farisè, AI’s deputy director for Southern Africa, said. “Respect for socio-economic rights has also declined dramatically, leaving many people in abject poverty with no means to put food on the table.

“Zimbabwean authorities have revealed their brazen contempt for basic freedoms and shown that there is no space for dissent in the so-called ‘second republic’.

“The police have also repeatedly resorted to excessive use of force to suppress human rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.”

She said Zimbabwe had “demonstrated little or no respect for human rights and has repeatedly flouted the rule of law”.

“As political campaigning enters full swing, the authorities must ensure that people are able to freely exercise their rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly,” Farisè said

“Authorities must respect, protect, promote and fulfil the human rights of everyone before, during and after the election.”

The American State Department assistant secretary Molly Phee said in a recent interview that while Mnangagwa had promised free and fair elections, doubts over his commitment was increasing as the polls drew closer.

“The President of Zimbabwe has repeatedly said he wants his country to hold free and fair elections,” Phee said. “We believe that would be the best path to promote peace and prosperity in Zimbabwe.

“Unfortunately, we have seen a pattern over recent months that suggest that a free and fair election is in doubt,” she added citing the recently gazetted Patriot Act, which she said imposed restrictions on basic political freedoms.

“Those are the types of actions that concern us. We have also seen opposition political parties and citizens actively harassed and prevented from exercising their political freedoms that should be guaranteed by those regimes that I have described, the regimes under the Zimbabwean constitution, and as expressed by the African Union and the United Nations.

“So, we are concerned that the election won’t achieve the standard highlighted by the President.”

This week, Nevers Mumba, head of mission for the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) observer mission piled pressure on Zimbabwe to hold credible elections to guarantee peace and stability.

“We consider a free and fair election as a tool of peace and stability of any country,” Mumba told online TV station HStv upon arrival in Harare this week.

“If you do not have a fair election, you are going to be subjected to insecurity for quite a while. We are dedicating ourselves to ensure we are part of that process to allow Zimbabweans to make a choice of their own.”

The European Union Observer Mission (EUOM) said it will only make its observation public after the polls.

“The EU EOM is here to observe and will not interfere in the elections. These are the elections of the Zimbabwean people. Further, EU observers are bound to a strict code of conduct and will always remain neutral,” Fabio Castaldo chief observer for the EUOM, told the Independent.

“Since our arrival in early July, the EU EOM has met key participants in these elections in all 10 provinces to learn first-hand from the government, candidates and political parties, civil society and the media about the ongoing process for the 23 August harmonised elections.”

We’re scared of losing- Zanu PF

ZANU PF yesterday admitted that it is afraid of losing elections scheduled for next Wednesday after skirting questions about accepting election results if the poll outcome favours the opposition.

Addressing a Press conference in the capital, party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa was non-committal after being asked several times by journalists if Zanu PF was going to accept election results.

“We don’t dream about losing,” Mutsvangwa said.

“In fact we are afraid of losing, that is why we have beenworking so hard trying to convince the electors to vote for us.

“We have been courting investors because we are afraid of losing.

“We cannot lose elections because there are comrades who sacrificed their lives for the ruling party. We don’t think about losing, winning is our DNA.”

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa last week said he might not accept election results after alleging a plot to rig the polls.

Chamisa, who is one of the 11 presidential candidates, said the 2018 polls in which President Emmerson Mnangagwa was announced a winner with a narrow margin, were rigged.

The CCC challenged Mnangagwa’s victory at the Constitutional Court, but the apex court ruled in favour of the Zanu PF leader.

The opposition has, however, bemoaned the unfair electoral playing field ahead of the elections saying there is an elaborate ploy to rig the polls.

Mutsvangwa then turned to foreign election observers saying they should stay away from meddling in the country’s affairs.

“We are happy that the Americans have agreed to be neutral as they observe these elections so that they respect the Zimbabwean democracy,” Mutsvangwa said.

“They have agreed not to undermine the State processes [undertaken] by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) because it’s a professional body that executes its mandate accordingly.

“There are certain organisations here in Zimbabwe meant to move the agenda of the opposition, but are not substitutes of election observers we have approved as a government. We cannot be taught democracy.”

He added: “We are happy to learn on how we can improve our electoral processes from the assessment by observers, but we can’t allow them to undermine us because we know our sovereign status as an organised people.

“We are happy with the European Union position of not having clouded judgement, they are observers not monitors.”

Mutsvangwa said Zanu PF was not worried about the voters roll.

“Opposition has always had issues with Zec but it’s wrong. In the digital era everything is now electronic, registration can be viewed online. Numbers in the registry are known, so they should tally with the votes,” he said.

China’s President To Make State Visit To South Africa Ahead Of The BRICS Summit

0

China’s President Xi Jinping will attend the summit of BRICS leaders in South Africa as he makes a state visit to the country next week.

“At the invitation of President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, President Xi Jinping will attend the 15th BRICS Summit to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and pay a state visit to South Africa from August 21 to 24,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in an online statement.

The visit will be Xi’s second international trip of 2023, after he travelled to Russia in March. The Chinese president previously visited South Africa in 2018 as he sought to enhance his country’s diplomatic and economic ties in Africa.

The five BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will meet in Johannesburg next week to discuss how to turn a loose club of nations accounting for a quarter of the global economy into a geopolitical force that can challenge the developed world’s dominance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faces an international arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, will take part by video rather than attending in person.

A total of 69 countries have been invited to the summit in South Africa, including all African states, and expansion is expected to be high on the agenda. Countries including Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Ethiopia have shown interest in joining the group either formally or informally.

China, seeking to expand its geopolitical influence amid its ongoing rivalry with the United States, has said it “welcomes more like-minded partners to join the ‘BRICS family’ at an early date”.

Russia also supports expansion, while Brazil has resisted, fearing it could undermine the group’s stature. India is on the fence.

The term BRIC was first coined by a Goldman Sachs economist to describe the rise of Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2001. Those countries had their first summit in 2009 in Russia, and when South Africa joined the following year, the group became known as BRICS.

BRICS countries account for more than 40 percent of the world’s population and about 26 percent of the global economy.

Besides attending the BRICS meeting, Xi will also co chair the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, the Chinese foreign ministry said.

Senegalese Opposition Leader Ousmane Sonko Hospitalised After Hunger Strike

0

In the midst of the turmoil that has sent shockwaves through Senegal in anticipation of the upcoming presidential elections, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko finds himself at the heart of the crisis, now confined to intensive care after embarking on a hunger strike. According to his legal representatives, this significant development unfolded on Thursday.

Initiating his protest on the 30th of July, Sonko’s decision followed accusations of him inciting fatal clashes between his adherents and the security personnel. The consequence of his stance has led to his admission to the intensive care unit of Dakar’s principal hospital, as disclosed by Cire Cledor Ly, one of his attorneys.

Having visited the intensive care section on Thursday, Ly revealed that Sonko had lost consciousness yesterday. Confirming the situation, another lawyer named Bamba Cisse also confirmed that Sonko’s health had taken a critical turn, while his official Facebook page noted his admission the previous evening due to an unexpected ailment.

Meanwhile, Sonko has remained hospitalized while under detention since the 6th of August, the day he was admitted for urgent medical attention. The details of his current health condition remain shrouded in uncertainty.

At 49 years of age, Sonko has amassed a considerable following among Senegal’s youth, largely due to his fiery attacks on President Macky Sall, portraying him as a potential autocrat and the leader of a corrupt upper echelon. This sentiment was underscored by his conviction on the 1st of June, which sentenced him to two years in prison on charges of morally corrupting a young employee of a beauty salon. Sonko contends that this conviction was orchestrated to prevent his eligibility for the upcoming year’s elections.

The aftermath of his conviction was marked by violent confrontations that resulted in a minimum of 16 fatalities. Subsequently, his arrest on the 28th of July was followed by formal charges of inciting insurrection, being involved in criminal associations, and undermining state security, all of which were connected to incidents traceable back to 2021. This also prompted the dissolution order of his PASTEF party.

In response to Sonko’s hunger strike, the government has voiced skepticism regarding the genuineness of his protest.

South African Opposition Parties Forge Alliance to Challenge ANC’s Dominance

Following an intensive two-day gathering and several months of negotiations, a coalition of seven South African opposition parties known as the Multi-Party Convention has come together to strengthen their collaboration as the nation moves closer to the 2024 elections.

At the formal event, leaders from these opposition parties signed the Multi-Party Charter, symbolizing their collective determination to unseat the African National Congress (ANC), currently led by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In a concerted effort, the coalition extended an invitation to other opposition parties not initially part of the alliance, encouraging them to join forces in a united front to remove the ANC from power. Their assertion is grounded in the belief that the country is currently experiencing misgovernance and a disregard for the rule of law.

In an unprecedented shift since the establishment of democracy in 1994, the African National Congress (ANC) faces the real prospect of losing its parliamentary majority and, consequently, the presidency in the impending 2024 elections.

This transformative potential arises amid mounting discontent stemming from issues such as corruption, an unprecedented energy crisis, and a struggling economy marked by widespread unemployment.

“We are extending another invitation because we think there are political parties that would be a good fit”, Siviwe Gwarube, a representative of the Democratic Alliance (DA), said on the sidelines of a coalition meeting in Johannesburg.

She further emphasized that their involvement could significantly bolster our numerical strength, while refraining from divulging specific projections of the coalition’s electoral success.

Last month, the DA took a decisive step by forming a coalition with six smaller opposition parties, all with an eye toward the 2024 elections. However, this collaborative effort deliberately excludes the radical left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which stands as the third-largest political party in the nation.

With approximately a fifth of the parliamentary seats under its banner, the DA has the potential to secure around 16 percent of the popular vote based on current polling data. Presently, there are a total of fourteen parties represented in the parliament.

In a joint declaration, the coalition parties articulated their mission: “Our mission is to overthrow the ANC, exclude the EFF, and establish a multi-party government.”

Reflecting on the historical context, Neil de Beer, the leader of the United Independent Movement, a constituent of the coalition, expressed, “We have not forgotten history, but this nation must stop living in it.” This sentiment was a reference to the ANC’s enduring grip on power since the end of the apartheid era.

The ANC’s historical dominance experienced a historic dip below the 50 percent threshold during the 2021 local elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa, aged 70, secured reappointment in December, with the potential for a second term at the helm of the nation if the ANC emerges victorious.

Shut your mouth and keep off Kenya affairs, Raila Odinga tells US envoy Whitman

Azimio Leader Raila Odinga addresses delegates during the Biennial Devolution Conference
Remarks by US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman at the 8th Devolution Conference ongoing in Eldoret have rattled Azimio One Kenya Alliance, with Opposition Raila Odinga and senators telling her to keep off the affairs of the country.

Odinga who was received at the conference venue by Council of Governors (CoG) Chairperson Ms Anne Waiguru and several governors led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, began his speech with the Swahili saying: ‘nyani haoni kundule,’ translated to ‘the monkey does not see his ass,’ pointing at insincerity on Ruto’s government.

A day after Whitman threw her weight behind President William Ruto’s government, endorsing his win at last year’s presidential polls as legitimate and promising the present regime total support and stronger ties with the US government, Odinga on Thursday told off the ambassador, with senators under Azimio political outfit terming the envoy’s remarks as insensitive to Kenyans given what is happening in the country.

“I want to tell the rogue ambassador, leave Kenyans alone,” Odinga said in his parting shot while delivering a keynote address at the Devolution conference on Thursday afternoon.

“If ‘maandamano’ (demos) can lead to dialogue between Ichungwah and Kalonzo, then everything is good in ‘maandamano’ (demos),” he stated, cheering from a section of the delegates.

“Tell the rogue ambassador, Kenya is neither the US nor is it a colony of the United States. Keep your mouth shut while you are here. Otherwise, we will call for your recall back to your country,” he added.

The opposition leader’s rejoinder came moments after his Azimio brigade of senators had criticized at a press conference, the US envoy over her statements at the Devolution conference where she endorsed the election of President William Ruto.

The 2022 General Election outcome was hotly contested by the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya coalition, with the dispute landing before the Supreme Court, which eventually also upheld Ruto’s victory, to the displeasure of the Opposition.

In her address, while pitching strongly for Kenya as Africa’s best investment destination for the international community, Whitman did not hide the fact that she is enthusiastic about the country’s investment prospects and climate, noting that the Ruto administration has made great strides and is committed to building a business-friendly environment.

The US envoy who reported to Kenya in July 2023 just before the last general election said she is focused on strengthening the US-Kenya trade relationship in coordination with the state.

“I arrived in Kenya days before the August 2022 General Election. What I witnessed was nothing short of remarkable, Kenya held what many analysts said was the freest, fairest, and most credible in Kenyan history,” she stated.

“The elections were observed by international organisations and upheld by the Supreme Court and power was transferred ordinarily and peacefully at the time,” she said.

The remarks were like opening an unhealed wound to the opposition Azimio brigade, since they had bitterly contested the 2022 General Election.

Azimio felt the envoy was meddling in the affairs of Kenya and did not hide their displeasure with her remarks.

However, Raila lauded governors for putting their differences aside ‘and finding time away from our toxic politics to forge the way forward for Kenya.’

Before Odinga arrived at the devolution forum, Azimio senators had also convened a press conference and hit out at Whitman terming her Wednesday comments as unfortunate and expressing hope that they were personal and not representing the position of the American government.

“In any case, Kenyan politicians and diplomats have never taken positions on American elections, imperfect and indecisive as they have been from the Bush/Al Gore to the Biden/Trump contests,” the senators stated.

In her powerful pitch in which she strongly pitched for Kenya as Africa region’s best investment hub, Whitman stated that Kenya’s high tax burden was “alright” as long as it was consistent, while on corruption, she praised Kenya for doing better than India and Venezuela, and that American businesses had no reservations with Kenya.

In a rejoinder, however, Azimio senators said the remarks were out of touch with the realities in Kenya.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission says 7 million presidential ballot papers printed, names printing company

0

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is printing 7,126,600 ballot papers against a voting population of 6,623,511 eligible to take part in next Wednesday’s harmonised elections.

This was revealed in a Friday notice by the poll management authority’s chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana concerning data on balloting material set to be used in the crucial poll.

Silaigwana also said 7,098,750 ballot papers were being printed for the national assembly vote while 6,854,259 were set for local authority polls.

ZEC said the balloting material was being printed at Mining and Printing Company of Zimbabwe (MPCZ) which is found at Number 1, George Drive, Msasa, Harare.

Silaigwana said “a total of seven million one hundred and twenty-six thousand, six hundred (7,126,600) presidential ballot papers” were being printed.

“…Seven million and ninety-eight thousand, seven hundred and fifty (7,098,750) national assembly ballot papers, and;

“…Six million eight hundred and sixty-one thousand, six hundred and fifty (6,861,650) local authority ballot papers have been printed for the conduct of elections on the 23rd of August 2023.”

The top ZEC official said the numbers of ballot papers allocated to each province were as specified in the published schedule.

He said ZEC calculated a 3 percent contingency for each polling station.

Silaigwana also explained reasons behind the differences in the number of ballot papers being printed for the three-tier election.

“With respect to the national assembly election an independent candidate for Gutu West National Assembly passes away and the election will be conducted on a later date,” he said.

“…With respect to the local authority election, no election will be held in 91 wards because the candidates for those wards were returned unopposed and while 4 candidates passed away and the ward elections will be conducted on a later date.”

Silaigwana said for the presidential ballot papers, there is a total of 6,623,511 voters with ZEC factoring in a 7, 6 percent contingency.

For the national assembly ballot papers, there is a total of 6,597,865 voters. ZEC factored in 7, 6 percent contingency.

For local authority elections, a total of 6,604,462 voters and a contingency of 3, 5 percent was calculated.

Postal voting has already commenced with police officers voting ahead of the plebiscite.

The window is extended to citizens who carry out essential services on voting day.

These include members of the security forces and healthcare workers.

Controversy Erupts: Saviour Kasukuwere Criticized For Not Backing Nelson Chamisa After Being Barred From Presidential Race

Controversy Erupts: Saviour Kasukuwere Criticized For Not Backing Nelson Chamisa After Being Barred From Presidential Race

Some social media users have expressed their disappointment over Saviour Kasukuwere’s decision not to endorse Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) president Nelson Chamisa.

This comes after Kasukuwere was barred from contesting in the upcoming presidential elections due to a constitutional breach.

Many expected Kasukuwere to throw his support behind Chamisa, but so far, no such endorsement has been made.

Kasukuwere’s Team Claims Chamisa Is An Ally, But No Endorsement Given

Despite Saviour Kasukuwere and his team repeatedly stating that Nelson Chamisa is not an enemy but an ally, the lack of endorsement has left people questioning their stance.

With Kasukuwere’s aspirations dashed by the court’s decision, it seemed logical for him to rally his supporters behind Chamisa.

However, no such call to action has been made, leaving netizens wondering about the reasons behind this silence.

Below are some of the comments on social media.

Ethan Malibongwe Moyo:

“I was expecting you guys to endorse NC?”

Dhewa Chenjerai:

“2028 if you are serious kwete zvekumuka sehowa (mushroom) and overestimate your power. Enough time to restrategize. I encourage you to vote for change and endorse change.”

Head of Marketing Responds, Supporters Left to Decide

In response to the mounting criticism, Kasukuwere’s Head of Marketing and Mobilisation, Never Maswerasei, addressed the issue. He stated,

“No endorsement of anyone. I am sorry that your expectations were not met. Our supporters will know what to do.”

This statement raises questions about the team’s strategy and its ultimate goals in the upcoming elections.

Qin Gang’s removal unlikely to affect China’s foreign policy

0

BEIJING-(ANI)-Qin Gang’s removal from the position of China’s foreign minister sparked a number of rumours regarding talk of affairs, conspiracies and corruption, but whatever the reason, its impact on Beijing’s foreign policy and governance – under Xi Jinping’s dominance – will be insignificant.

The removal of Qin Gang from his post as China’s foreign minister after a weeks-long disappearance fostered a few zesty rumours.

Talk of affairs, conspiracies, and corruption has bounced around the net even as other policymakers have been replaced.

But whatever sparked Qin’s fall, the impact on Chinese foreign policy and governance will be insignificant-as many of the purges party rule tends to invite are.

Until recently, Qin Gang was one of China’s most prominent American experts and influential policymakers.

But after a mysterious, month-long disappearance from public view, he was unceremoniously ousted from the position of foreign minister in late July.

Few Chinese officials had as rapid a rise as Qin, whom I first met three decades ago when he was a low-level functionary.

Qin served as Chinese ambassador to the U.S. for 18 months before being promoted to one of China’s top foreign policy jobs just a year ago, at the age of 56.

Qin was a “Wolf Warrior diplomat,” one of a group of outspoken Chinese diplomats not shy of criticizing the U.S. sharply and publicly, and unfailingly defending their homeland.

The term appeared in 2017 after the hugely popular Chinese movie Wolf Warrior 2, about a special ops hero.

But Qin was a Wolf Warrior diplomat long before the term was coined.

As Foreign Ministry spokesperson, as vice minister of foreign affairs and before he was China’s ambassador in Washington, he was a vigorous hawk toward the United States.

Ties between Beijing and Washington have been steadily deteriorating over persistent trade, human rights, military policy, espionage and cyber-hacking issues, and particularly over Taiwan, the self-governing island that China views as a renegade province to which the U.S. sells huge amounts of sophisticated weaponry.

This has been the backdrop to Qin’s career, as he became one of the leaders in formulating China’s aggressive foreign policy.

With his sudden fall — certainly a shock within China’s leadership hierarchy — things do not bode well for Qin, and China’s intentions toward the U.S. have become murkier

Haitians evacuate houses in Port-au-Prince as gang violence increases

0

In Port-au-Prince, thousands of Haitians have fled their homes due to the rising gang violence, which has claimed more than 2,400 lives so far this year.

The Carrefour-Feuilles district was taken over by gang members this week, according to the UN, and 5,000 people fled the area.

As government efforts to stop the violence failed, local aid organisations have suspended essential services.

A decision regarding the dispatch of a multinational force to assist in reestablishing order must be made by the UN Security Council soon.

In Carrefour-Feuilles and nearby areas, where there has been a lot of fighting between gangs for several months, many people were seen carrying suitcases or loading their cars with their belongings to leave.

A video from Reuters news agency showed women crying next to the body of a man who was murdered by gang members.

According to Reuters, a lot of people who were able to get away gathered at a nearby military base and asked for assistance in dealing with the gangs.

Haiti is one of the poorest and most-violent countries in the world due to many years of instability, disasters, and economic problems.

Gang fighting has increased a lot since President Jovenel Moïse was killed in 2021. This made many parts of the country not under the control of the government anymore.

The fighting over land has led to more people needing to leave their homes, not enough food to go around, many people being killed, people being taken against their will, and sexual crimes happening more often.

According to Ravina Shamdasani, a spokesperson for the UN rights office, this year, at least 2,439 Haitians have died, 902 have been hurt, and 951 have been taken by force.

She said that news from Haiti this week has shown that the violence against the people there is very brutal.

She said that people joined together to form vigilante groups to fight against the gangs, but unfortunately, these groups caused 350 individuals to be killed since April. Out of these, 310 were said to be members of a gang, and one of them was a police officer.

As per early information shared by a local rights group, 30 individuals lost their lives and more than a dozen were injured in assaults in the city on Thursday.

The US embassy, which has already sent home workers who are not needed urgently, shut down on Thursday because there was continuous shooting nearby.

Haiti’s government said they will send all their people to bring back order to Carrefour-Feuilles. However, the police force that is not well-prepared has had difficulties in dealing with gangs who have a lot of weapons.

The International Red Cross said that within a few days, the level of violence increased significantly. This was especially true in the places where they were collaborating with local organizations.

The street barriers put up by fighting gangs were preventing people from getting assistance, it said.

Ann Lee, one of the founders of a crisis response group called CORE in the US, said that a lot of global organizations had left because of more and more threats and violence towards their employees.

Someone who works for us had a tragic event happen. Her daughter passed away because she had a sudden health problem and couldn’t reach the hospital in time. We have a worker whose brother was killed by cutting off his head.

Ms Lee said that every member of CORE’s team in Haiti personally knew someone who had been a victim of the violence.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a report on Tuesday that a strong military presence from multiple countries is necessary to bring back peace and take away weapons from the gangs.

Kenya has said that it is willing to take charge of such a group. The council will think about the issue in the next few weeks.

Former Mugabe Party Spokesperson Accuses Zanu-PF of Manipulating Prophet Makandiwa’s Prophecy on Elections

Former Mugabe Party Spokesperson Denies Zanu-PF’s Interpretation of Makandiwa’s Prophecy
In a recent development, Jealousy Mawarire, a notable member of the United Family International Church (UFIC) led by Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa, has refuted the prevailing notion that Makandiwa prophesied a victory for the ruling Zanu-PF party in the forthcoming August 23 Elections following a viral prophecy.

A Non-Partisan Prophecy
Mawarire, who previously served as a spokesperson for the National Patriotic Front (NPF), a short-lived opposition party led by Robert Mugabe for the 2018 elections, has deemed the claims surrounding the prophecy as a product of political propaganda rather than a faithful representation of the prophecy itself.

Misrepresentation of Makandiwa’s Prophecy
Addressing the issue, Mawarire pointed out that the alleged prophetic message was devoid of any direct reference to a specific political party, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of the original revelation. He underlined the careful wording of the prophecy, stating,

“Prophet Makandiwa mentioned no political party by name. Yet the ‘creative’ within Zanu-PF have latched onto the undisclosed prophecy and made it about their party winning the election.”

Political Maneuvering in Election Season
Mawarire’s commentary brings attention to the phenomenon of political manoeuvring during election season. He characterized the situation as both amusing and perplexing, asserting, “It’s a classical example of the ‘Kingdom of God suffering (allowing) violence and the violent taking (it) by force’ (Matthew 11:12).”

Zimdancehall Artist Ricky Fire Dumps CCC, Embraces ZANU PF After Meeting The Mnangagwa Family

Yesteryear Zimdancehall hitmaker Ricky Fire has dumped the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and embraced ZANU PF after meeting the Mnangagwa Family.

Last year, Ricky Fire made waves in the run-up to the parliamentary by-election after boldly declaring his support for Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, CCC.

He performed at most of the party’s rallies in cities like Harare, Mutare and Bulawayo. The stylish chanter would don different types of yellow costumes, the colours synonymous with CCC, as he rocked the party’s supporters with old hits like “Zvakandimomotera.”

So staunch was Ricky Fire that he even received threats from shadowy individuals on social media.

Ricky Fire Ditches CCC For ZANU PF

A year after the by-elections, Ricky Fire has now dumped the opposition party and thrown his support for ZANU PF.

Yesterday, Ricky Fire was one of the artists who had a meeting with President Mnangagwa’s sons Emmerson Jr, Sean and Collins at the ZANU PF Headquarters. The meeting was meant to discuss how to promote the ruling party’s brand, ways to develop the music industry and plans on the big musical celebration after the election.

Present were artists like Poptain, Holy Ten, Enzo, Kikky Bada$$, Michael Magz, comedians Doc Vikela and Bhutisi, Ras Pompy, Ndunge Yut, Boss Pumacol, Levels and Fantan.

Zimbos online expressed mixed emotions as Ricky Fire dumped CCC.

South African Businessman Mcebisi Mlonzi Named In Airport Gold Scam

0

SOUTH AFRICA’S MLONZI NAMED IN AIRPORT GOLD SCAM

SOUTH African businessman Mcebisi Mlonzi has been identified as the co-mastermind of the gold heist that was thwarted by the Drug Enforcement Commission at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Monday.

And sources within the investigative wings have told News Diggers that the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) is investigating allegations into claims by the foreign suspects that the Zambian businessmen involved in the gold scam had already taken out about US$5 million from the private jet before the whole transaction was exposed and thwarted.

Mlonzi is the proclaimed representative of the South African company called TFM that accused Health Minister Sylvia Masebo of soliciting for a bribe after the government cancelled its US$100 million contract to construct prefabricated hospitals.

“He is actually one of the key person in this. Mlonzi is the one who knows the Egyptians and the other foreigners who came into the country. He is the one who connected them to the Zambian guy, Kasanda. He told them that Kasanda had the connection that could help them have a safe landing and transact without being inconvenienced,” the source explained.

Another source narrated how the local businessmen pulled off the scam and got away with millions before foiling the deal.

“It’s not true that this private jet was intercepted the moment it landed. That’s not what happened, otherwise you would not have found both the gold and the money on the same plane. What we know is that the transaction actually did happen. A lot of private planes come into the country and they are cleared as normal with a normal manifest.

This was the case with this jet. You can talk about the efficiency of our airport security and that is a story for another day. So when the jet landed, the occupants communicated with their contact person and this gold dealer now went there and he even entered the plane. You know that one I am talking about… he presented the gold and it was tested. Of course he had fake gold and some genuine bars. The foreigners told him that the quantity was not enough. So he told them that he was going to organise the rest of it, but he needed to go with the money. So they gave him about half the money involved and he went away,” the source narrated.

“While he was away and I think he took long to return, that’s how the airport security now started asking questions and in the process DEC was alerted of suspicious activity at the airport. It was at that point that the whole operation was thwarted. Now, realizing that the transaction had been exposed, this is when the local businessman who had already gotten away with the money decided to act as a whistleblower and started telling police officers also that there was a plane with money at the airport. That’s why you are hearing him claim that he is just a whistleblower. But DEC is actually investigating this report also, because they have been tipped that the South African involved took part of the loot and fled the country before the operation was completely foiled. You may be aware that the President was tipped by Monday morning and he issued instructions that anyone involved must be arrested without exception, so DEC is going for anyone who is linked.

Meanwhile, News Diggers has learnt that the said private jet originated from Amman, Jordan, made a stop over in Egypt, Cairo before flying to Lusaka with Egyptian nationals on board.

The sources revealed that the same plane was previously used by that country’s senior government officials, including the police and secret service over the last few years, although the State-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) reports that the plane was not Egyptian.

Egyptian politicians have mounted pressure on the government leadership, that had been silent since the matter broke out, to provide answers to the speculating citizens.

During a heated Al Jazeera programme yesterday, renowned politician Talaat Khalil demanded to know how Egyptians were involved in the scandal.

“The plane might very well be not Egyptian but is owned by Egyptians. This is common. Also, nobody said how long the plane stayed in transit in Egypt. We also must be told if the goods seized from the plane originated from Amman or were transferred to the plane in Cairo. This matter is very important to the Egyptian people and it is causing many rumours to spread. These rumours are of our own making when we don’t speak out. We need an official real source to speak to us in cooperation with their Zambian counterparts. With my due respect to General Mohamed Nour El-Din, nobody is answering the questions raised by the average Egyptians who have the right to know. We have to investigate this further and avoid repeating the same sentence that the plane is not Egyptian. Yes, the plane is not Egyptian but six Egyptians were on board. Are they the crew Passengers? What were they doing on the plane? What about the time the plane spent on the ground in Cairo between arriving from Amman and flying to Lusaka? How long was it? Is it not possible that the Egyptians and the goods boarded the plane then? This is a viable question that needs to be answered,” said Khalil.

“In fact, why was the plane in transit in Cairo? It is only an hour flight from Amman? Why did it land in Cairo? To refuel? Did the plane exhaust its fuel in this one-hour flight? Why did the plane land in Egypt? We are not accusing anyone, but we are seeking answers. The government must act and provide information”.

Why Are Some People So Hell Bent To Malice, So DEC Has Manufactured A Plane To Display?- Chilufya Tayali

WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE SO HELL BENT TO MALICE, SO DEC HAS MANUFACTURED A PLANE TO DISPLAY? FOR WHAT?

Please don’t tag or screenshot articles from malicious pages, I don’t do malice and false speculation. I have blocked myself from seeing certain pages, like the one here.

When you realise you are wrong or got facts wrong, there is nothing wrong in coming back and retract what you would have said, not come up with more lies.

The Egyptians are here, their plane is here and they will go to court.

Their lawyers have even put themselves on record, do you think they would ignore such information if their plane has been swamped?

Here’s a story from Kalemba :

Continued detention of the “gold mafia” is illegal, release them now, lawyers tell DEC

LAWYERS representing five Egyptians detained in connection with the unfolding gold saga have demanded their immediate release branding their detention as illegal.

Eric Silwamba, Jalasi and Linyama legal practitioners have since filed a writ of habeas corpus before the Lusaka High Court.

The five identified as Micheal Adel, Michel Botros, Walid Abelsayed, Yasser Elshishtawy, Mounir Gerges Awad and Mohamed Gouda were on August 14, 2023 arrested by the DEC in connection with a foiled gold scam deal involving US$5.7 million.

The suspects arrived at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport aboard a private jet for a shady business deal which was frustrated when the DEC intercepted the jet which was laden with 602 ‘fake’ gold bars weighing 127.2 Kg.

Other items seized on the Global Express T7-WW aircraft are seven magazines, 126 rounds of ammunition five firearms and travel permits belonging to the suspects.

The DEC in a joint operation with other law enforcement agencies, conducted an operation at the airport after an alarm was raised that a plane had touched down at the airfield to smuggle out minerals.

However Eric Silwamba, Jalasi and Linyama legal practitioners claimed that the suspects and aircraft crew were denied access to their lawyers the search of their jet contrary to the constitution.

The firm said the suspects were detained at Chelstone police station without being charged with any offence as confirmed by DEC director general Nason Banda during a press briefing on August 15, 2023.

“On August 16, 2023 the officers warned and cautioned the suspects on the premise that they were investigating a case of false information to a public officer. The warn and caution statements are incompetent and irregular as the same is premised on a repealed law,” the writ read.

The Egyptians’ lawyers said the continued detention of the ‘mafias’ is illegal as the DEC’s powers to detain a person without charging them has elapsed.

The quintet indicated that it will not participate in searching the plane as the process is illegal, but gave the Commission a leeway to comb through the aircraft which is under their control.

“All the subsequent searches conducted after the said seizure will not in any way invite our client to be held liable in any way as the responsibility of any outcome solely lies on DEC,” read the document further.

“Our instructions at this stage are to take out the ancient writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum and demand that our clients be released forthwith and caused to appear before the High Court for you to show cause why you have continued to detain them without a charge.”

So far, DEC has confirmed the arrest of nine foreigners and four Zambians in connection with the scam.

The commission is yet to comment about the apprehension of gold dealer Shadrek Kasanda yesterday.

Authorities snatch Kasanda from his Ibex Mansion

AS the KKIA gold scam continues to make headlines, heavily-armed law enforcement agents added a touch of drama to the unfolding events as they raided the Ibex mansion of “gold dealer” Shadreck Kasanda whom they snatched and sped away with him this afternoon.

Kasanda’s name has dominated speculative conversations surrounding the scam since it broke out on Monday evening.

This afternoon, joint law enforcement agents confirmed what many have suspected, Kansanda’s involvement in the matter.

Nosy journalists from various media houses swarmed Kasanda’s house and captured the unfolding events frame by frame.

As the calm business man was led to a fleet of waiting vehicles, he said he expected justice to prevail in the matter.

Kasanda told journalist from a distance that the he had no idea of why law enforcement officers had raided his house.

Kasanda was later cruised out of his residence by the joint investigations team to the National Command center where he is reportedly taken for questioning.

Meanwhile the DEC director general Nason Banda led a team of journalists and members of the public to view the two aircrafts seized in the case amidst allegations that it was released from lawful custody.

While at the Airport Banda said another Zambian had been apprehended in connection to the the case while refusing to give out the suspect’s names or devulge any information on the case to press.

“Don’t worry about what the press is saying, worry about what I tell you. Just look at me like it’s Jesus speaking,” he said.

“What I’m telling you is the gospel truth.”

Lusaka man loses marriage for bullying wife on Facebook

And so, after unfriending him on Facebook, Charity dragged her husband to the Lusaka Boma Local Court where she demanded to end her 16-year marriage ties with him.

In submitting her case, Charity revealed that bedsides her husband annoying comments on her Facebook photos, he also fantasised about emulating crime documentaries he watched on TV about spouse killings.

Charity complained that Lungu always spoke about how beautiful the wives of his friends were compared to her.

As if that was not enough, Charity said her husband even called her useless in front of the couple’s four children.

“he called me an enemy of progress, when I was studying, he would always tell me that there are prettier women that he would go to, even when I post a picture on Facebook, he would comment telling me that I am too fat and tell me that they are more slender women that he knew.

“For the same reason, he even chased me from the master bedroom and I had to sleep with the children for six months. He reached an extent of telling me that at his workplace, the guards have guns and he could easily borrow one to shoot me with if I don’t leave him, I got scared and went to live with my sister in Libala,” Charity told the court.

But in his defence, Lungu said Charity changed when she started going for nursing school as she always became busy on her phone studying, and ignored him a lot when she went to prepare for her final exams at a boarding house.

“My friends would always boast about their wives, but I wouldn’t about mine because she had changed, she doesn’t even respect me,” said Lungu.

CHIEF KASEMPA LAUDS GOVT FOR EARLY DISTRIBUTION OF INPUTS

Kasempa – 16 August,2023

Chief Kasempa of Kaonde-speaking people says the early supply of farming inputs for the coming 2023–2024 farming season by the government signifies the manifestation of good agricultural policies.

The traditional leader said he recalled how the agriculture sector thrived under Dr. Kaunda’s administration, adding that this is what has begun to happen under the new Dawn administration.

He told Falcon News today at his palace in Kasempa district that the people of North-western Province are extremely happy to see the early distribution of farming inputs meant for the forthcoming farming season, as this gives farmers adequate and timely preparation.

Cheif Kasempa has further noted that the revamping of the production of fertilizer at the Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) plant and the commissioning of the United Capital Fertilizer is a big achievement by the government as it will not only facilitate quick supply of fertilizer but also impact on the cost of the commodity.

He has predicted an improved and high-performing agriculture sector under the current government, provided it continues to implement favorable agriculture policies.

The traditional leader said agriculture remains critical to boosting the country’s economy, particularly because it provides a means of livelihood for rural communities.

“The opposition can criticize even good things simply because it is their role. But we are seeing good things, especially in the manner in which the supply of fertilizer has been done by the current government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts Elvis Nkandu has commended Chief Kasempa for complementing the good will of the UPND-led government, adding that the appraisal will motivate the government to even go the extra mile in service delivery.

Mr. Nkandu further took time to explain different youth empowerment policies to the chief.

Mr. Nkandu explained that he was in the province to empower youths with booster loans and motorbikes for over 300 youths in each district.

And The Minister of Labor, who is also a Kasempa member of Parliament, Brenda Tambatamba, said the government remains committed to improving the labor force of this country.

Mrs. Tambatamba said that the only way a country can become productive is by engaging a lot of youth in different areas of production.

She further appealed to the youths across the country to take advantage of government-rolled-out empowerments through loans, grants, and skills training in their quest to become self-sustainable.

Member states except those under military rule ready for armed intervention in Niger- ECOWAS

0

West African military chiefs met in Ghana on Thursday to coordinate a possible armed intervention to reverse a coup in Niger, as Germany called for EU sanctions against the rebel leaders.

Alarmed by a series of military takeovers in the region, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has agreed to activate a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger.

ECOWAS is demanding Niger’s coup leaders release President Mohamed Bazoum after his July 26 ouster, warning that the bloc could send in troops as a last resort if negotiations fail.

“Democracy is what we stand for and it’s what we encourage,” Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, told the meeting in Accra.

“The focus of our gathering is not simply to react to events, but to proactively chart a course that results in peace and promotes stability,” he said.

ECOWAS troops have intervened in other emergencies since 1990 including in wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ivory Coast, Benin and Nigeria are expected to contribute troops, but little detail has emerged over a potential Niger operation.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, an ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said the Accra meeting would “fine tune” details in case the bloc “were to resort to the ultimate means of force”.

Musah is also reported to have said all member states except those under military rule and Cape Verde are ready to participate in the standby force.

The Nigerien generals who have detained Bazoum blamed deteriorating security in the country for the coup and have threatened to charge him with treason. They have however said they are open to negotiations. Russia and the United States have urged a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

ECOWAS has already applied trade and financial sanctions while France, Germany and the United States have suspended aid programmes.

On Thursday, Germany’s foreign ministry said it wanted the EU to impose sanctions on the coup leaders, adding on social media that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had held talks with her French and US counterparts.

  • Sahel violence –

The Accra meeting of top army commanders on Thursday and Friday came after fresh violence in Niger, with jihadists killing at least 17 soldiers in an ambush, the defence ministry said.

Twenty more soldiers were wounded, six seriously, in the heaviest losses since the July 26 coup, when the presidential guard ousted Bazoum and detained him and his family.

Jihadist insurgencies have gripped Africa’s Sahel region for more than a decade, breaking out in northern Mali in 2012 before spreading to neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.

The unrest across the region has killed thousands of troops, police officers and civilians, and forced millions to flee their homes.

Anger at the bloodshed has fuelled military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso since 2020, with Niger the latest to fall.

Analysts say any ECOWAS intervention against Niger’s coup leaders would be militarily and politically risky, and the bloc has said it prefers a diplomatic outcome.

ECOWAS issued a statement Tuesday “strongly condemning” the latest jihadist attack, urging the military “to restore constitutional order in Niger to be able to focus (its) attention on security… weaker since the attempted coup d’etat”.

Talks have taken place this week in Addis Ababa among ECOWAS and Niger representatives under the aegis of the African Union.

The United States said Wednesday that a new ambassador would soon head to Niger to help lead diplomacy aimed at reversing the coup.

  • UN food warning –

Bazoum’s election in 2021 was a landmark in Niger’s history, ushering in its first peaceful transfer of power since independence from France in 1960.

He survived two attempted coups before being toppled in the country’s fifth military takeover.

The United Nations warned Wednesday that the crisis could significantly worsen food insecurity in the impoverished country, urging humanitarian exemptions to sanctions and border closures to avert catastrophe.

Niger is also facing a jihadist insurgency in its southeast from militants crossing from Nigeria — the cradle of a campaign initiated by Boko Haram in 2010.

US Women National Team Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski Resigns

The United States women’s football team head coach, Vlatko Andonovski, has resigned following the team’s early exit from the ongoing Women’s World Cup competition.

In a statement released Thursday, the U.S. Soccer team said Andonovski’s resignation came after the side’s disappointing World Cup campaign, AFP reports.

Twila Kilgore, who has worked as an assistant coach for the past 18 months, has been named interim head coach while the search for a replacement takes place.

While commenting on his action, Andonovski said, “It’s been the honour of my life to coach the talented, hard-working players of the USWNT for the past four years.”

“I’m very optimistic for the future of this program, especially considering all the young players that got opportunities over the past few years who will no doubt be leaders and impact players moving forward.

“While we are all disappointed by the outcome at this year’s World Cup, I am immensely proud of the progress this team has made,” he added.

The USA team was eliminated in the last 16 by Sweden after a penalty shootout which is the earliest they ever departed from a World Cup.

The Americans had won the previous two World Cups, in 2015 and 2019 with Jill Ellis in charge of the team.

Andonovski, an American citizen who was born in North Macedonia, took over the team in October 2019 having made his name in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Under Andonovski, the USA won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics after losing to eventual champions Canada in the semi-finals.

The U.S. Soccer sporting director, Matt Crocker, said, “All of us at the U.S. Soccer thank Vlatko for his dedication to our Women’s National Team over the past four years.

“Vlatko worked tirelessly for this team and has been a strong and positive leader for our women’s programme. We’re grateful for everything he has contributed to the U.S. Soccer and know he has a bright future in the sport.”

The federation said that Crocker had been conducting a review of the women’s programme and he would now head the search for a new head coach.

Chamisa’s CCC cries foul over ballot paper design

0

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has raised concerns about the design and printing process of the ballot paper for the upcoming elections.

CCC deputy secretary for elections, Ellen Shiriyedenga, said that the party was not consulted about the printing of the ballot paper, as required by law.

“The fact that the postal voting has commenced means that the ballot paper is out, of concern to us as the CCC is that contrary to section 52 of the Electoral Act, we as the stakeholders particularly the political parties contesting in this election, we were supposed to be informed with respect to the ballot paper as to who is responsible for printing it, the quantities,” she said.

She also said that the ballot paper that is circulating on social media is not in accordance with the law, as it is not in alphabetical order and puts the name of the incumbent president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, at the top of the second column.

“The ballot paper itself, the design, the law is clear when it comes to that, the ballot paper should be designed and the names arranged in a single file in alphabetic order but the ballot paper which is in circulation it’s in two columns, clearly a way of igniting the profile of Mr Mnangagwa.”

Shiriyedenga said the information is shrouded in secrecy, “worse off now, we get to hear that the ballot paper is out there and is a cause of concern for stakeholders.”

She said in the previous elections, including the last by-elections of March 2022, the candidates were given the opportunity to go and inspect the ballot paper.

“But this time around nothing of that sort was made. The only sample of ballot paper we have is the one circulating on social media and that is a cause of concern, we can’t be updated via social media as the political parties because we feel we are very key stakeholders in this electoral process,” said Shiriyedenga.

She added that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) should give the stakeholders an opportunity to inspect the ballot paper.

“Looking at the social media reports and the picture of the ballot that we saw, it’s a cause of concern, that is if that is the actual ballot paper that we are going to use on election day. The burden of proof now lies with ZEC to give the stakeholders the opportunity to inspect the ballot paper.”

She said ZEC has repeated the same mistake which occurred in 2018 and it is a breach of law.

“If you can recall in 2018 we had a similar concern with 23 candidates that participated in the election, we said well the law was breached, probably ZEC was overwhelmed by the number of presidential candidates which were 23 then but this time around we only had 11 but ZEC goes on to repeat the same two columns so clearly we know why that is being done, clearly to profile Mnangagwa and we are worried as CCC in terms of the breach of the law,” said Shiriyedenga.

Haiti: Notorious gang leader warns against deployment of foreign armed forces

0

An ex-police officer considered by many to be Haiti’s most powerful gang leader warned on Wednesday that he would fight any international armed force deployed to the Caribbean country if it committed any abuses.

Jimmy Chérizier, best known as “Barbecue,” also urged Haitians to mobilize against the government. “We are asking the population to rise up,” he said at a news conference.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has led Haiti since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, has been pushing for the deployment of a foreign armed force since October to help fight powerful gangs that are estimated to now control 80% of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

In late July, the African nation of Kenya offered to lead a multinational force, and the U.S. said earlier this month that it would put forward a resolution in the U.N. Security Council to authorize a non-U.N. multinational mission.

Chérizier said he would welcome a foreign force if it were to arrest the prime minister and people he described as corrupt politicians and local police allegedly selling ammunitions and guns in Haiti’s slums.

But he said Haitians would rise up if any international force repeated the actions of previous U.N. peacekeepers, including committing sexual abuses and inadvertently introducing cholera into water sources.

The United Nations had no comment, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Chérizier, who has been accused by authorities of masterminding several massacres in recent years and of organizing a fuel blockade last year that paralyzed Haiti for nearly two months, said the group he leads, G9 Family and Allies, is no longer warring with another group known as G-Pep.

Chérizier is the only Haitian under U.N. sanctions, with the Security Council saying he “has engaged in acts that threaten the peace, security, and stability of Haiti and has planned, directed, or committed acts that constitute serious human rights abuses.”

He called on the Ministry of Education to reopen schools in Cite Soleil and other slums that have been closed because warring gangs who are raping and killing people.

The violence has displaced nearly 200,000 Haitians whose homes have been torched by the gangs.

Chérizier spoke to nearly two dozen journalists at an outdoors construction site in Port-au-Prince.

He wore sandals, white pants and an orange hoodie emblazoned with a religious symbol used in Vodou.

He was surrounded by several G9 members carrying small handguns visible under their clothes, unlike his previous media appearances at which they openly held assault rifles.

We need power’: Zimbabweans hope for end to blackouts as election nears

Young men fix a tyre in the dark at an all-night truck stop in Insuza
At the fuel station that Emmanuel Bhuru supervises in Zimbabwe’s second industrial city of Bulawayo, electricity outages are the norm.

As the station has no functional generator, his staff now work shorter hours. For most of their 12-hour shifts, they sit around waiting for electricity to work and then leave an hour early to be able to get home before darkness descends. Perishable products often go bad in the station’s mini-mart fridges, too.

“We lose a lot of perishables because of the power cuts so we’ve cut back and buy less yoghurt, polony [bologna], margarine and other things which spoil easily, and we just have to write it off as a loss because it’s not the manufacturer’s fault,” he said.

The power outages have also led to lower volumes of fuel being sold and the station has continuously failed to meet targets set by the fuel dealer. Bhuru estimates that in July, sales dropped by “close to 70 percent because the power went five to six days a week”. He hopes to have his generator repaired to stave off losses this August.

“Power can go at any time here, it’s never guaranteed and … if there is no electricity, no generator, we just have to shut the station and go home,” he told Al Jazeera.

Indeed, many small and large-scale businesses around the country have been forced to rely on alternatives as the country’s persistent power crisis has left many struggling to survive.

As the country heads to the ballot on 23 August, this energy deficit is one of the core issues at stake. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has been in power since 2017, is promising energy sufficiency if he is re-elected, telling crowds at his rallies that no one and no place will be left behind.

To ease the country’s energy troubles, the government recently commissioned two additional power units at the Hwange Thermal Power Station which will add 600 megawatts to the nation’s capacity. At its commissioning ceremony in August, Mnangagwa hailed the launch as a turning point for the country and said the additional energy would be a critical enabler for industrialisation.

“We are now energy sufficient,” the 80-year-old told a cheering crowd at a rally in Harare, the capital. “I used to hear complaints … but there is no more load shedding and if anyone comes complaining to say meat is rotting in their fridges, they are lying, tell them to bring their rotten meat and we will give them a new piece.”

But there has been no trickle-down effect for many.

“If there are no more power cuts, then we need to see it, not just declare it,”
Bhuru chuckled.

No quick fix
The newly commissioned units will raise the national grid capacity from the present 1,400 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts. But Mnangagwa’s government says it wants to scale up to 2,500 megawatts by 2025 in order to cope with increasing demand from the mining sector.

More than half of Zimbabwe’s export earnings come from gold and platinum, however, the Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines cites unstable power supply as a key risk factor to the industry’s growth. The country usually relies on energy imports from Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia, but Zimbabwe has been disconnected due to non-payment of debts worth more than $100m to regional suppliers.

Young presidential challenger Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has an ambitious goal of improving electricity generation to at least 6,000 megawatts by 2029. The CCC manifesto mentions raising $4.3bn to revamp power generation and reduce electricity tariffs to align with regional prices.

Currently, regular breakdowns at several thermal power stations due to old equipment and low water levels at Kariba, the country’s main hydroelectric plant, are affecting power output. Chamisa, 45, says he has a plan to raise $300m to modernise the national grid.

But Kurai Matsheza, president of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), told Al Jazeera that there is no quick fix to Zimbabwe’s power problems.

“Any new capacity is welcome, but this is still far short of what we need as a country. We have drought challenges and climate change affecting the hydroelectric station and the new units at Hwange are a positive addition, but it’s not enough, we fear that power challenges will persist into the future,” he told Al Jazeera.

Matsheza explained that medium and long-term strategies were required to resolve a crisis which, amid economic challenges, added to the problems in pricing which have caused tariffs to surge.

After a 37 percent increase in April, prices doubled in July.

This has made life harder for Zimbabweans, especially in a country that, like Syria and Venezuela, has one of the highest hyperinflation rates globally.

The Zimbabwean dollar has lost more than 80 percent of its value to the US dollar since the beginning of the year. On the streets, the latter is the preferred currency of choice, but paying for electricity in the foreign currency has not made much difference to Daniel Ndlovu, a gold miner on the edge of the city.

“We’re still battling to keep things going, even if I pay in dollars, the power goes out, so I rely on my backup. Generators are a huge investment and it means constant repairs, I can’t run a mine on that so I need to find a more solid plan,” he said.

Built over five years, the Hwange expansion, the government’s largest infrastructure project ever, was financed through a concessional loan of $1.3bn from the Chinese government. It is one of four energy projects being built by Chinese contractor Sinohydro.

Ties between Beijing and Harare have strengthened over the years as the Far East ally has provided development funding and investment support.

In contrast, Western states have shunned Zimbabwe which is still beholden to sanctions imposed in the early 2000s for controversial land reforms. And international financiers such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank cannot give loans to Zimbabwe until the $10bn external debt is resolved.

Lights beyond the ballot
The past five years of Mnangagwa’s rule have seen the country slip deeper into a fiscal crisis and analysts warn the economy could worsen if there is no swift change in policy.

But Mnangagwa has said that if re-elected, he will transform Zimbabwe into a middle-income economy by 2030. Last year, the government announced agreements to commission 27 solar independent power producers to create solar parks generating 1.1 gigawatts by 2025, but currency volatility and unfavourable taxes have spurned investor uptake.

With the credibility of the vote key to improving international relations and attracting long-term investment, the opposition challenger Chamisa has promised to fix the ailing economy and end human rights abuses.

A tense political atmosphere has led to the death of at least one opposition supporter and dozens more have been injured in skirmishes with police or ruling party supporters. And it is a reminder of previous violence; the 2018 vote left six dead after the military opened fire on protesters.

As the nation goes to the polls looking towards a better future, citizens like Bhuru hope that results at the ballot translate to energy and development for those at the grassroots, regardless of who wins.

“I hope this election means they will hear our cries, the economy is bad. Here we need power so we can work properly, but more than that, we just need an end to this suffering,” he said.

From Heart Emojis to Handcuffs: Popular South African TikToker Arrested Alongside Nigerian Boyfriend

Trouble’s brewing as a South African TikTok sensation finds herself in a sticky situation with her Nigerian beau.

Reports coming in reveal that a well-known TikToker from Durban, South Africa, landed herself in handcuffs on Wednesday, alongside her Nigerian partner.

How Police Nabbed Durban TikToker And Nigerian Boyfriend

Owami Ngcobo, the Durban TikTok sensation, reportedly found herself in hot water when she and her Nigerian boyfriend were apprehended early Wednesday morning.

According to details shared by the KZN VIP Protection Services on Facebook, the duo got nabbed after a tip-off prompted the Durban Metro Police Service Drug Team to spring into action regarding the sale of a hijacked vehicle—a White Hyundai I20, to be precise.

Swiftly, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) orchestrated a strategic move.

Undercover agents made their move in Umhlanga, Meridian Drive, where they successfully apprehended two suspects in the early hours of Wednesday.

Although one of the suspects, believed to be Owami’s Nigerian boyfriend, initially managed to give authorities the slip, he was eventually caught at Blue Lagoon.

Both suspects were processed at the Durban North South African Police Service station.

Mzansi Reacts As South African TikToker Gets Arrested

Observant social media users swiftly noted that the lady in the released images bore a striking resemblance to Owami Ngcobo, even sporting an outfit eerily reminiscent of her latest TikTok video.

As of now, Owami has refrained from posting any content on her TikTok account. In response to one of her recent videos, commenters drew parallels between her romantic entanglement and the affairs of Dr Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester. A segment of TikTok users expressed hopes that the reports might be unfounded, praying that she had been wrongly apprehended.

Here’s a selection of comments:

Cybercrime Tragedy: Nigerian Hackers Extradited To America In Deadly S_extortion Plot After Conning US Football Star To Take His Own Life

In a rare and dramatic turn of events, two Nigerian men have been extradited to the United States to face charges in connection with a s_exual extortion scheme that authorities believe led to the tragic suicide of a 17-year-old Michigan high school student and football star.

Samuel Ogoshi, 22, and his younger brother Samson Ogoshi, 20, both hailing from Lagos, were transported to the U.S. on Sunday and are scheduled to appear in federal court in Grand Rapids on Monday afternoon, according to the Justice Department.

The brothers are indicted on four counts, including the s_exual exploitation of minors and the alleged role in the death of Jordan DeMay, who took his own life in March 2022 after being coerced into sending explicit photos by the defendants, who then threatened to expose them to his loved ones.

If convicted, Samuel could face a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison, while Samson faces a minimum of five years.

Last year, the FBI issued a cautionary alert about the growing occurrence of these schemes, frequently originating from West Africa, a region long plagued by cybercriminal activities.

How Nigerian Bothers Samuel Ogoshi, 22, and Samson Ogoshi, 20, Took Advantage of US Teen

According to the indictment, the defendants employed various tactics to carry out their malicious scheme. They gained access to hacked social media accounts and assumed the identities of young women, specifically targeting teenage and young adult males.

Operating under the username “dani.robertts” on Instagram, they reached out to Jordan DeMay shortly before his tragic death.

Once engaged in chat conversations, the defendants utilized the internet to gather personal information about their victims, including home addresses, schools, family members, and friends.

As outlined in the indictment, the defendants then manipulated their victims, leveraging their assumed female personas, to produce and send explicit images of themselves.

Subsequently, the defendants compiled collages that combined these explicit images with other pictures sourced from social media, including images depicting the victims’ schools, family, and friends.

With these collages in hand, the defendants resorted to threats, intending to expose them on social media platforms and share them with the victims’ family, friends, and classmates unless a ransom was paid.

The grand jury indictment accuses the defendants of engaging in this extortion and attempted extortion of over 100 individuals.

The heartbreaking story of Jordan DeMay, a promising senior student at Marquette Senior High School, adds a devastating dimension to this case.

Known for his active participation in football and basketball, Jordan tragically took his own life just six hours after being targeted for money, as recounted by his grieving parents.

In an attempt to shed light on the torment their son endured, Jordan’s parents shared excerpts of the text conversations between him and the blackmailers.

One chilling message read,

“I have screenshot all ur followers and tags can send this nudes to everyone and also send your nudes to your Family and friends Until it goes viral… All you’ve to do is to cooperate with me and I won’t expose you Are you gonna cooperate with me…Just pay me right now…And I won’t expose you.”

Demanding a sum of $1,000, the blackmailers left Jordan with no choice but to send $300. In a desperate plea, Jordan messaged them, revealing his state of mind:

“I’m kms rn [killing myself right now]. Bc of you.”

Shockingly, the Nigerian brothers allegedly responded with callousness, stating,

“Good…Do that fast…Or I’ll make you do it…I swear to God.”

SINGLE-SOURCING OF FERTILISER TO BE CHALLENGED IN PARLEY – MUNDUBILE

SINGLE-SOURCING OF FERTILISER TO BE CHALLENGED IN PARLEY – MUNDUBILE

By NATION REPORTER

THE Patriotic Front (PF) has vowed it will challenge the single sourcing of fertiliser under the UPND administration when Parliament resumes its sitting because it is certain the direct bidding is being motivated and driven by grand corruption.

The former ruling party is also calling on the civil society and the church to begin censuring and condemning the Hakainde Hichilema administration for having adopted single sourcing as the modus operandi in most of its procurement.

Brian Mundubile, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament says the PF is going to challenge the single sourcing of fertiliser for the 2023/2024 farming season because such kind of procurement methods were reeking corruption.

Mr Mundubile said there was no emergency on the supply and delivery of fertiliser for Government to have resorted to single sourcing and has warned that all those involved in the scandal shall have to account when the time comes.

He said what was shocking was that Government would go ahead to procure fertiliser from the most expensive bidder, leaving our many other players who were competitive, all for the reasons of kickbacks and personal amelioration.

“From the beginning, the UPND has been using single sourcing and when they just came into government, Zambians lost US$15 million through direct bidding. The law on single sourcing is very clear that there must be an emergency or the goods being procured should be unique. There is no emergency and uniqueness in the procurement fertiliser, save for corruption.”

“As Members of Parliament in the PF, we want to assure Zambians that we shall not sit and watch the treasury being looted and plundered by some known people in government. We shall interrogate and challenge the single-sourcing of fertiliser immediately Parliament resumes its sitting on September 8. The procurement of fertilizer shall be on the top of the agenda because we thought the UPND government had listened to our advice and concerns last farming season which saw the chaotic distribution of fertiliser because of corruption in the procurement of the commodity,” Mr Mundubile said.

And Mr Mundubile has challenged the civil society organisations and the church to condemn the grand corruption being perpetrated by the new dawn administration in the procurement of fertiliser and many other forms of graft.

Mr Mundibile said Zambians were wondering about the silence on the corruption surrounding the procurement of fertilizer, saying time had come for the CSOs and the church to call out the UPND leadership on their poor governance.

“The big question is…for how long will the CSOs and the church standby and watch as the country’s treasury is being looted and plundered? We wish to call upon the church, the civil society organisations and other interest groups to condemn in the strongest terms the corruption in the procurement of fertilizer.”

“In the last farming season, we witnessed the most chaotic delivery and distribution of fertilizer because of the corruption that characterized the procurement of the commodity. We are nearing another farming season and high ranking government and party officials have converted themselves into procurement officers and that is why have seen an open tender being cancelled and reinstated by direct bidding so that known politically connected individuals should benefit,” Mr Mundubile said.

Forfeiting my 15 flats without evidence is an infringement of my rights – Esther

FORMER First Lady Esther Lungu says the grabbing of her 15 semi-luxurious double storey houses by the State without proving that they were dubiously acquired, will be a violation of her rights to a fair trial as she is not facing any criminal charges.

Esther has submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Court that the the application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have her houses forfeited is rushed as the National Prosecutions Authority ought to establish that the properties are tainted.

In this case the DPP has requested the Court to penalise the landlady by forfeiting her 15 houses worth K41.5 million on reasons that they were acquired using illegal means.

In a notice of motion to raise preliminary issue, the former First Lady indicated that she intends to challenge the Court’s authority to determine a matter that is wrongly commenced.

In her notice of intention to raise preliminary issue Esther wants the EFCC to determine whether the matter is properly before it following its establishment by the Chief Justice under Statutory Instrument no. 5 of 2022 as a division of the High Court, contrary to Article 133(2) and (3) of the constitution as amended.

She questioned whether the matter is properly before court having been commenced by way of notice of motion contrary to the provisions of Order 6 Rule 1(6) of the High Court (Amendment) Rules of 2020 SI no. 58 of 2020.

Esther is further seeking a determination among others on whether the contentious issues ought be determined using oral evidence at trial.

In an affidavit in support of notice to raise preliminary issue Esther said the mode of instituting the action is flawed.

She said her houses are not a product of grand corruption through foreign serious offences.

Esther charged that the DPP has failed to obtain an order of the Court pertaining to the property proved to be illegally obtained, which should be forfeited.

“In the absence of such an order I verily believe that the proceedings herein violate my constitutionally guaranteed right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty as these proceedings attribute guilt with no prior conviction associated with the said properties,” said Esther.

“The exhibits which are bank statements from various banks allegedly exhibiting my bank balances, The banks have contravened the provisions of the law in relation to banker’s books and the law in relation to computer generated evidence.”

The matter comes up today for hearing of the preliminary issue.

Skyways owner Yusuf Zumla denies involvement KKIA gold scandal

The owner and managing director of Zambia Skyways Charter who is also Tourism Council of Zambia Chairperson Yusuf Zumla has denied involvement in the multi million US dollar and gold bars bust at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport – KKIA in Lusaka.

Zumla in an exclusive interview with the Zambian Business Times – ZBT stated that “ am not involved in it all…I don’t even know what is going on and my name is being tarnished”. All I know is that the police are investigating and that the mines minister made a statement on this.

The Skyways MD further confirmed that indeed the plane Beechcraft King Air B90 is under his company but that he was not personally involved in the bookings and that this matter was now with the police.

When told that his company’s aircraft King Air B90 was allegedly used to locally transport the gold that was to be exchanged for about US$10 million cash with an international private jet at KKIA which the Drug Enforcement Commission – DEC confirmed to be a private jet global express T7-WW aircraft, Zumla said he was not involved in anyway.

When asked if he was aware of who booked the plane as that information is now critical, he confirmed that his pilot was at the airport on Sunday, and that he does not work on Sunday’s.

“The pilot was here on Sunday, I didn’t even know that he was here on a Sunday, I didn’t even know why he had gone to the Apron (a place were planes park), so even I was asked [by the police] and I told them that I was not aware”.

When ZBT asked the Skyways MD to disclose who booked the aircraft, Zumla said his management is the one that handles all the bookings and that he was not aware. The investigators should now have that information.

Zumla complained that “I am a Zambian citizen, i seat on boards, am a very straight forward person, but some people want to tarnish my name for reasons best known to themselves”.

Investigations have continued in this KKIA gold scandal but members of the public are getting concerned that a massive cover up efforts are underway and may lead to the masterminds and connected people involved getting away scot free.- Zambian Business Times

WAS IT NECESSARY FOR MINISTER KABUSWE TO MAKE A HASTE STATEMENT ON THE ISSUE SURROUNDING THE CAPTURE OF GOLD AT THE AIRPORT ?…***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

This country has just come out of a serious episode of scandals by past govt officials who abused their powers by stealing the nations natural resources . Zambians were brutally beaten and killed for demonstrating against theby illegal activities . The UPND leadership should not forget what this country has been , even when this Gold scandal does not involve senior govt officials , people will manipulate the facts because they know that when they were in govt they stole these resources with impunity . They want zambians to think when a govt is in office it will get down to plunder these resources just like the way they did , unfortunately because the plunder becomes habitual some people continue to use same avenues to steal these precious resources .

The nation has given a lot of suggestive views on the statement which was officially delivered by the minister of mines which contradicts with the one firstly issued by the DEC officers , who should have given a comprehensive statement ?, when was the statement supposed to be publicly given ?, did govt coordinate properly after the DEC discovery of the contraband ?, how did the plane come to get fake Gold from zambia ? , considering the whole arrangement that the mineral could not have been on the plane if it was fake Gold because dealers have all the accessories to test the minerals before anything is done , and that was not the first attempt to get Gold from zambia .

I understand the agitation by zambians when it comes to these high profile deals , some people will associate them to senior govt officials because of the past experiences , therefore it is very important for the UPND govt to be very cautious and sensitive when addressing the nation over these matters , no one is going to argue on facts that it was fake Gold , but the failure to coordinate and the haste temperaments has the potential to misdirect citizens and create impulsive emotions to disbelieve what the minister said , especially that the opposition always want to see how more Angel the UPND leaders can be .

Zambians should learn to be patient when such matters arise , the security agencies are there to serve the country , it is sad to see how information is being twisted and aligning the leadership of this country , such reasoning for political mileage should remind us of what mafias did to this country , they are marely presenting issues to suit their own ways , they used to do it and they think others are doing it . We urge govt to come up with a logical conclusion over this matter so that zambians can know who was involved , because that plane surely has been coming to zambia for many years and the national airports have the data at their disposal , no air space was violated meaning it’s entry in the country was very legal. God bless mother Zambia .

Saboi struggles to prove Hamasaka is corrupt

FACEBOOK champion Saboi Imboela yesterday depleted gallon upon gallon of saliva as she struggled to substantiate her claims that State House chief communications specialist Clayson Hamasaka is a corrupt cassanova.

Without her social media followers to cheer her on, Saboi almost sent the entire court into slumber with her boring tales of her time in the UPND.

Saboi’s antics seemed to have angered of State advocate Lewis Kandele who guided that she remains if she had nothing to say.

“Your honor if the defence have nothing to say let them tell the court that they have nothing to say! they cannot be reciting evidence that is already on record and distorting facts, let them tell us their story,” Kandele said in protest of Imboela’s mode of defending herself.

Principal resident magistrate Sylvia Munyinya equally guided Imboela to get straight to the point and not going round circles.

Saboi then opted to downplay the gravity of her case when she tried to ride on her ‘friendship’ with Hamasaka as the reason for slandering him.

She said her comments in the name of check and balances did not lower Hamasaka’s standing in society because she did not mention his name.

She said that Hamasaka’s reputation remains unshaken following her false accusations as he was promoted from State house media director to State House Chief communications specialist.

“I knew him (Hamasaka) in 2002. I was an artist and he was a lecturer at Evelyn Hone College. We met in UPND he was a media director and I was part of the media team, from 2002 to date we have never argued,” she said.

“The post clearly stated that I was in a fight with the Hamasaka that I was mentioning in a post and Hamasaka himself and journalist Kennedy Limwanya confirmed I have never been in a fight with him,” she claimed.

“My job was to write statements for the current President Hakainde Hichilema and even when I left the UPND when I have been attacked by UPND members Mr Clayson Hamasaka is the only one who defends me when there are complaints from people, he’s the one I call that’s how close we have been.”

She said she knew five people by the name of Hamasaka who are members of the UPND and she was ready to take them to Court so that their national identity cards can be scrutinized.

“When I was a member of the UPND and just in UPND alone I knew over five Hamasaka’s and I have taken the liberty to invite the five Hamasakas to come to court and present their NRC and phone numbers for verification of this court,” Imboela said.

“One of the witnesses only verified that am the owner of the page because I go live of which I cannot deny. I have four admins they post anything on the page from wherever part of the world without us talking to each other.”

Saboi who’s in the habit of vilifying her political opponents said her case was politically orchestrated to cause her distress.

“I look at this case as one of the biggest eels of our politics. When I was called to the police I was called for a different case. I was reported by the UPND members in various parts of the country Chadiza , Kabwe, Luanshya , Lusaka they claimed I had defamed the President but when I left I was charged for defaming Clayson Hamasaka,” said Imboela.

“I have maintained a good relationship with him and I have never fought with him.”

In this case Imboela is facing two counts of libel.

On September 9, 2022 Saboi allegedly defamed Hamasaka on her Facebook page when she suggested that he was a corrupt civil servant who was on the verge of being discarded in the singles’ dustbin by his wife Pamela, because he was a lethal womaniser who spared no creature in a skirt.

Defence continues on September 5.

Petitioner calls on parliament to ban use of TikTok in Kenya

0

A petitioner has called on members of parliament in Kenya to ban the use of popular social media application TikTok saying it is a contributor to erosion of cultural and religious morals in the society.

The Executive Officer of Bridget Connect Consultancy Bob Ndolo in a petition to the National Assembly on Tuesday, called on MPs to move with speed and ban the use of TikTok in the country as it is exposing young people to explicit sexual content.

The petitioner decries that while the use of the application has gained popularity among the youth in the country, the content being shared on the platform is inappropriate thus promoting violence, explicit sexual content, hate speech, vulgar language, and offensive behaviours which is a serious threat to cultural and religious values.

He says the internet in Kenya is not regulated by the Communications Authority of Kenya hence it is difficult to regulate the content being uploaded on TikTok.

Ndolo in his petition says TikTok has invaded the privacy of even children thereby creating scandals.

He warned that if the app is not banned in Kenya, its addictive nature would lead to a decline of academic performance and rise in mental issue such as depression, anxiety and sleep deprivation among the youth.

While commenting on the petition, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa said parliament cannot preside over the banning of the app since it has created employment to the majority of young people.

Ichung’wa said while the petitioner has valid concerns, his approach for total ban is akin to fighting technology.

“The petitioner should come to seek on how to regulate the usage of the app, age group and content uploaded for a certain age to watch, outright banning would be killing careers of many young people who are earning a living through it,” Ichung’wa said.

“These apps are part of the government effort where young men and women can create content for use in TikTok and snap chat to earn a living,” he added.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina said there is a high unemployment rate in the country especially among the young people hence MPs cannot ban tiktok but can regulate the content uploaded in it.

Nominated MP Irene Mayaka said the banning the usage of the app in Kenya would not solve the problems raised by the petitioner saying with applications such as the Virtual Private Network (VPN), one can still watch the contents in apps available in other countries.

She urged parents to monitor what their children consume on social media.

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie said TikTok has not done any crime saying it’s the users that should be blamed on the content they watch.

“Parliament cannot go to the houses of individuals to switch off TikTok because the children are misusing it, it’s the parents and churches to teach the children about morality,” Mr Kiarie said.

Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino pointed out that parliament cannot legislate on morals and at the same time can’t provide an environment for it to thrive, urging there is need for careful balancing on how to handle the matter.

“Most parents cannot regulate the use of the app as much as we can, we have to be conscious of these platforms. While we cannot do total banning, we need to do proper controlling and regulation to save our children,” Mr Owino said.

The petition will be considered by the committee which will give its verdict after 60 days.

During this annual regional Summit, President Hichilema will assume the Chair of the SADC Organ for Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, taking over from His Excellency Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia.

Zambia’s assumption of the Chairmanship holds immense benefits for both the Nation and the broader SADC community. It elevates Zambia’s international standing, positioning the nation as a force for positive change and a beacon of regional leadership. THE KK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BUILT AT $400 MILLION DOLLARS AND WHY NOT AT THE CORRECT COST OF $150 MILLION DOLLARS ? ..***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

I’ve taken time to see whether zambians are very concerned about how their money was being plundered . President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA did mention in his speech in Livingstone how and what he called a banana KK international Airport which was built at a fake cost of $400 million dollars and not at the real cost of $150 million dollars ?. A loan of over $400 million dollars from Israel and the fake cost purchase price of the Gulfstream .

Many zambians may have forgotten that we have in this country 42 old modeled fire tenders that were purchased at a theft cost of $1 million dollars each and insured by ZISC at $250 thousand dollars a very low premium that tells the whole story behind the criminality , PF minister was fired for calling them wheelbarrows . A lot of projects in this country were being commissioned by the former president who pretended not to know that there was stealing involved , no one is there to explain what happened to the Euro bonds by these people saying they will win elections in 2026 when their party members vote for them .

The UPND govt is doing everything in their strength to find money to liquidated these foreign loans which were used in this way by robbing the people of zambia in blue day light . When we see these people being investigated and properties bring siezed , it is from these trails where state money was being syphoned to enrich senior govt officials . It is still a myth that the PF regime did not know who was smuggling MUKULA species , when the commissioner general ZRA was very much available in office , security wings that were used to escort in the night got orders from someone because this country in the last seven years has always had a president in office .The EIA reported very well ,and former ministers took the news diggers journalist to court for exposing the report , we don’t know what the courts have done over this matter .

We can go on and on identifying projects that were completed but money stolen from them , let’s recall that Gold was stolen at the police station in Solwezi , the person who was punished was the officer in charge because of his ethnicity , party officials were involved which caused death among themselves . The Same persons who had a hand to these resources which the UPND govt is working to overcome the artificial challenges created , they are saying UPND has failed , but they defaulted and failed to restructure their own debt , they had no mechanisms in place to repay the debt , today we have advanced to reducing the effects had the debt has been structured giving a breath to the new dawn govt to see investors coming through and primarily unlocking the economy .

They are telling the nation the debt restructuring achievement is nothing to go by things , surely those who understands should be available to explain to the people of zambia , don’t take the ignorance of people in the country for an advantage to advance Political influence to honor criminals because of recieving benefits from them . A lot of people continue being used against the UPND govt , some people like TAYALI have lost the sense of being because there is no agenda left in the mind of thought , masters can not rely on his rhetorical analysis which has no backbone .

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is the first servant in highest office in this country who has every information on how this nation was governed and mismanaged for seven (07) years , we can’t forget when people were telling us that they would become richer thsn president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA , where were they going to get the money if it is not from the projects like the KK international Airport ,each time the head of state mentions something , the president is not complaining but telling us a way money was stolen from the people of zambia . We thank God that zambians did not proceed after 2021 with the empire which was going to mortgage the future of this great country . God bless mother Zambia .

Kenya’s debt up record $10.8bn

Kenya borrowed the largest amount of money in a single year during President William Ruto’s first year in office, pushing the debt levels past the ceiling amid shortfalls in tax collections and increased repayment obligations.

Gross debt stock climbed Ksh1.56 trillion ($10.8 billion) for the financial year ended June, fresh data released by the Treasury shows, breaching the Ksh10 trillion ($69.52 billion) mark by Ksh189.53 billion ($1.32 billion).

Kenya ended the last financial year in June with a gross total debt load of Ksh10.19 trillion ($70.84 billion), a growth of 18.08 percent over Ksh8.63 trillion ($59.99 billion) a year ago, which was the last full fiscal year for former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Lawmakers in June voted to convert the numerical debt ceiling to an anchor of 55 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), with the Treasury given five years to comply.

The jump in gross debt came in a fiscal year Dr Ruto, who was in charge for nine of the 12 months under review, made it clear his administration would cut borrowing.

Nearly Ksh1.43 trillion ($9.94 billion), or 91.52 percent, of the new gross debt, was contracted in the last nine months of the year under review, according to the Treasury data.

Dr Ruto, who partly rode to power on a pledge to make debt a “last resort” in raising funds to plug holes in the budget, had pledged not to make the nation “slaves of debt from any place or any country”.

He vowed to pursue policies, which enhance tax compliance levels and grow national savings from a measly “seven” percent of GDP towards 30 percent envisioned in Kenya’s long-term development blueprint, Vision 2030.

“I am looking forward to the day, soon enough, when we borrow from the savings of the people of Kenya to run our development instead of borrowing from other countries, and that is what holds the future for us,” Dr Ruto had said last September ahead of being sworn into office.

“I am encouraging the people of Kenya as we work together to get our economy out of the mud… that each and every one of us must pay their taxes and I am going to lead from the front, making sure I pay my taxes.”

Provisional official data, however, suggests the Ruto administration’s fiscal consolidation plan was roiled by underperformance in the main tax streams, which missed the Ksh2 trillion ($13.9 billion) by Ksh112.76 billion ($783.9 million) in an environment of a softening economy.

Foreign borrowing accounted for two-thirds of the jump in gross debt after Kenya contracted an additional Ksh1.06 trillion ($7.37 billion) from foreign creditors to stand at Ksh5.36 trillion ($37.26 billion).

Multilateral lenders — largely the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and African Development Bank (AfDB) — grew their credit to Kenya by Ksh728.85 billion ($5.1 billion), or 37.89 percent year-on-year, zooming past the Ksh2.65 trillion ($18.42 billion) mark.

Loans from multilateral lenders such as the World Bank and AfDB come on concessional terms, which average a 1.75 percent fixed interest rate, with a 35-year tenor and a grace period of up to 10 years.

This eases the burden of future repayments, unlike commercial borrowing like Eurobond where the interest rates are higher, currently double-digit, with shorter tenors.

The stock of debt taken from foreign commercial banks and rich countries increased by Ksh166.09 billion ($1.15 billion) and Ksh159.83 billion ($1.11 billion) in the review period, partly reflecting the impact of a weaker shilling, to close at Ksh1.36 trillion ($9.45 billion) and Ksh1.33 trillion ($9.25 billion).

Borrowings sourced from domestic sources such as commercial banks, pension funds and insurers through the sale of Treasury bonds and bills increased Ksh503.01 billion ($3.5 billion) to end June 2023 at Ksh4.83 trillion ($33.58 billion).

The IMF and the World Bank have since 2020 classified Kenya at a high risk of debt distress since 2020 as a result of persistently large deficits in annual budgets in more than a decade, which are bridged through borrowing.

Kenya’s debt binge is underlined by Eurobond offerings, a package of Chinese loans and syndicated commercial loans over the years which are now squeezing its finances as the loans fall due.

The Ruto administration, for example, spent Ksh1.16 trillion ($8.06 billion) on servicing maturing debt and interest for the year ended June, with the burden projected to rise to an estimated Ksh1.8 trillion ($12.51 billion) in the current year ending June 2024.

“I do believe that the fiscal framework of the National Treasury has incorporated all these debt service payments, including the impact of a higher exchange rate,” CBK Governor Kamau Thugge said on June 26.

“They have a plan to reduce the overall fiscal deficit and to achieve a sustainable debt position and fiscal position over the medium term.”
