ONE OF MY CELLMATES GETS 3 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR WEARING A ZAF UNIFORM TO IMPRESS A WOMAN

He used to pray for all of us, he was like our Pastor and prayer warrior, he would cause the cell walls to vibrate when he is praying and he never ended his prayers without mentioning my name.

So sad, he has to go to jail for 3 years because of the passion he had for this woman. But if you ask me, I would say, he doesn’t deserve to be in prison, rather he needs education.

The man literally knows nothing about impersonation and the consequences of wearing a ZAF uniform just to impress a woman.

If only that guy had been to school or had a job, he wouldn’t be going to prison for 3 years.

For the few days I was with him, I can tell he is a good guy, so passionate and hardworking.

He grows tomato in Chingola and takes it to Solwezi. With the money from Tomatoes he goes to Lukulu to buy fish to sell in Chingola and that’s how he met this beautiful woman.

Yes, beautiful she is, such that, whenever she brought food to the cells, we all stood up to relish our eyes, including the married man.

The guy used to coil before me looking at me intently as if I held his fate on both the case and keeping this woman.

“Mulemona kwati bakankaka imyaka shinga aini?” (Who many years do you think they will jail me?), he would ask several times in a day.

“So, madam akankana aini?” (Will my wife dump me?), he would ask every now and then after a long silence.

I consoled him and encouraged him to be a man and place everything into the hands of God. I asked him to ask the magistrate to consider a suspended sentence for him, because clearly he didn’t need to go to jail.

It’s really a pity he has to go to jail, I hope President Hichilema would consider pardoning the guy as soon as possible.

MAY GOD BE WITH HIM

Transgender man convicted of assault after using fake penis to have s*x with three women in the dark

0

A transgender male has been convicted of assault for using a specially made prosthetic penis to have sex with three ladies without their knowledge, while pretending he was originally born a man.

Tarjit Singh, 32, who was born a biological female named Hannah Walters, assaulted the victims between June 2010 and March 2016.

During the course of the relationship those years, Singh insisted on having sex in the dark and keep clothes on so they don’t notice the strap on the prosthetic penis.

When the victims began to ask questions, Singh became abusive and manipulative, telling one woman there was ‘more to a relationship than sex’ and that she should learn to talk about her feelings more.

Following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Singh was today convicted of three counts of assault by penetration, six counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of making a threat to kill.

One victim said: ‘He looked like a guy, he acted like a guy.’

The victim said she found out that the defendant was not a man after finding his strap-on prosthetic penis some months into their relationship.

She told police officers that she felt ‘so stupid’ that she had fallen for such lies.

Singh told another victim that he had been born a boy, had a sex change to become a woman, and now wanted to be a man again.

The third victim met Singh after receiving a message from the dating website Plenty of Fish in 2014.

Singh told her that he would be having a sex change to become a woman.

He was caught after this relationship became abusive and the victim made a complaint to police.

During the trial, the prosecution was able to present mobile phone evidence that showed a history of websites visited by Singh, which included a company that makes ultra-realistic prosthetic penises.

Melissa Garner, from the CPS, said: ‘These victims have been deceived, betrayed and lied to in the most disturbing and traumatic of ways.

‘One of the victims was just 16 years old when she met the defendant.

‘Tarjit Singh, who was born as Hannah Walters, presented himself as a man, wore men’s clothing, and used a man’s name.

‘He tricked three innocent women into believing he was male and when questioned, he violently attacked them and intimidated them into continuing relationships.

‘Singh has never admitted his crimes and has continued to claim that these victims were aware of his gender.

‘The victims, in this case, have shown immense courage in coming to court and giving evidence.

Singh, of Enfield, will return for sentence on 27 July.

Texas school shooter’s grandpa says they had ‘no idea’ he bought two AR-15s, reveals he shot grandma in the head a week after they celebrated his 18th birthday

0

The grandfather of the Texas school shooter has revealed the family had no idea that he legally purchased two AR-15s last week.

Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot dead by police yesterday after he killed 19 fourth graders and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

He first shot his grandmother in the head at home, then stole her car and drove it to the school, crashing in a ditch before going from class to class to shoot dead people. He was later shot dead.

A Border Patrol agent who was nearby when the shooting began rushed into the school without waiting for backup and shot and killed the gunman, who was behind a barricade, according to a law enforcement official.

The agent was wounded but able to walk out of the school, the law enforcement source said.

Ramos had only turned 18 on May 16, before he went to buy two AR-15s and more than three hundred rounds of gun ammunition at the Oasis Outback store in Uvalde, a 10-minute drive from his house.

His grandmother, believed to be 66-year-old Celia Martinez, took him for dinner at Applebee’s to celebrate his birthday not knowing had plans to embark on a shooting spree.

On Wednesday morning, her husband Rolando Reyes, 74, told ABC News that neither of them were aware their grandson then bought the guns.

‘I didn’t know he had weapons. If I’d have known, I would have reported it,’ Rolando, who has a past felony conviction and cannot be in a home with firearms, said.

Ramos’s grandmother survived despite being shot in the head. She is in the hospital.

The shooter’s grandfather also revealed that he was quiet, but would sometimes go to work with him.

‘Sometimes I’d take him to work with me. Not all the time, but sometimes. This past year he didn’t go to school. He didn’t graduate. You would try to tell him but kids nowadays they think they know everything.

‘He was very quiet, he didn’t talk very much.’

The teen did not live with his mother because they had ‘problems’, the grandfather added.

According to him, he was out of the house when the teen opened fire. It was a neighbor who called him to tell him his wife had been shot but by the time he got back to the house, Ramos had escaped in his grandmother’s car.

‘The neighbor called me and said she’d been shot. When I came over here he said he’d taken off. It still hasn’t sunk in,’ he said.

Before the shooting, Ramos told his friend that he ‘looked very different now.’

‘You wouldn’t recognize me,’ he messaged less than a week ago.

Police find missing Tanzanian politician relaxing in a woman’s house months after he disappeared

A 43-year-old Tanzanian politician, Mutta Rwakatare, who was reported missing has been found relaxing in a woman’s house.

The family of Rwakatare, the Kawe ward councillor reported to Police he had not been seen since February this year.

In a statement released by the Dar es Salaam Special Zone RPC ACP Jumanne Muliro, said the politician was found at a certain woman’s house in the suburbs of Tabata in Ilala District.

“The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Force conducted an investigation and were able to locate the Councillor on the 23rd of May at the home of one Ashura Ally Matitu, 43,” reads the statement.

According to the police, Ms Matitu, who is a resident of Tabata Darajani, claimed that Rwakatare has been her longtime companion, in a relationship that spans over a decade.

She further narrated that Mr Rwakatare arrived at her home on May 19, in an intoxicated state and had stayed there until when he was found by the Police.

Rwakatare reportedly went missing since in February of this year, leading to social media concerns regarding his whereabouts.

Rwakatare siblings and colleagues have been involved in a frantic search for him with no avail, a disappointing situation that led Songoro Mnyonge, Kinondoni’s mayor, to request media houses to help in the search.

“We are looking for the Kawe ward councillor as we haven’t seen him for quite some time now. He is not at home neither is he in the office. Reports are saying that he has been hidden but we don’t know who. We are asking the one who has hidden him to release him as he/she is hindering the leader from serving his area residents. Media please help us,” Mnyonge had said.

The family had also provided background information to the police, detailing the Councillor’s behavioural patterns and conduct leading to him going missing for months. Treatment and further psychological therapies are being sought out.

Woman allegedly gets her husband killed for spending more time with his first wife

A woman, Chandra Kala, has been arrested in connection with the murder of her husband in Delhi, India.

The accused allegedly hired a hitman to kill her husband for spending more time with his first wife.

She gave Rs 1.5 lakh to the hitman identified as Jumman, to kill her husband and made an attempt to make this murder look like a loot.

According to local media, on May 18, police received a PCR call about a body being found in a pool of blood in Delhi’s Vikas Nagar, following which an investigation was launched. The victim was identified as Veer Bahadur Sharma (50).

A preliminary police probe revealed that Bahadur was already married and this led to frequent fights between Chandra Kala and the victim.

When the police questioned the victim’s wife, she told the police that a few miscreants had barged into their house and brutally thrashed him. She even alleged that the goons decamped with gold and jewellery.

However, the police grew suspicious as Chandra Kala changed her statements multiple times to mislead the police.

Police scanned various CCTV footage and in one of the clips they noticed a history sheeter Jumman roaming in the area.

Police analysed the call record details which further revealed that Jumman and Chandra Kala were in constant touch with each other over phone calls.

After the details came to the fore, police arrested the woman who confessed to her crime. The accused told the police; “I used to work as a sales woman at his garment shop and he used to harass me. I stayed quiet because I needed that job and, despite knowing the fact that Bahadur was married, I tied the knot with him.”

She added, “We have two kids but Bahadur used to spend more time with his first wife. Later on, I also came to know that he had extra-marital relationships with other women. He even tried to woo my younger sister.

During the same time, she met another woman working at the shop named Nagris. Nagris told Chandra Kala that her brother Jumman is a criminal and is out of jail and he would be able to help her to kill her husband.

On May 17, Jumman entered the victim’s house with a hammer and attacked Bahadur twice and he died on the spot. Chandra Kala gave Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery to Jumman to make this murder look like a loot.

Police have now arrested both the accused and also recovered cash and jewellery from their possession.

UPND Government must clarify if it has quietly decided to open doors to homosexuality and lesbianism, says Bishop Joshua Banda

UPND Government must clarify if it has quietly decided to open doors to homosexuality and lesbianism, says Bishop Joshua HK Banda

  • HOMOSEXUAL IDEOLOGY IS A WAR AGAINST OUR FAMILIES

Standing in firm solidarity with others in the Body of Christ, the Pentecostal Assemblies of
God in Zambia (PAOGZ) Council of Bishops is deeply concerned and highly disappointed
that LBGTQI ideas are being promoted blatantly on Zambian soil by some members of the
diplomatic corps on the one hand and being planned for in secrecy by some non-
governmental organizations (NGOs) on the other. This is a war against our families, present and future.

Homosexuality and lesbianism might be practiced by certain individuals in the republic (we are not burying our heads in the sand regarding this reality) as it remains a fact that they are illegal practices.

The Penal Code Section 155 prohibits sex between men with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Section 156 prohibits any attempt to commit unnatural offences
prohibited under Section 155 with a maximum penalty of fourteen years imprisonment.

Section 158 prohibits acts of gross indecency both between men and between women, with a maximum penalty of fourteen years imprisonment.

KINDLY EXPLAIN
We therefore request that Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Jack Mwimbu, MP and his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Hon. Stanley Kakubo, MP to explain how these developments were
allowed to unfold.

We urge the Zambia Police to investigate the NGOs that met at the unnamed lodge in Siavonga for breaking the law by secretly strategizing to decriminalize homosexuality.

We further demand that the proprietor of that facility be taken in for questioning for breaking the law. An apology too, from the Embassies of Finland and Sweden would be in order.

We further request that the UPND Government explains clearly its apparent tolerance of
practices that are directly in conflict with Zambian cultural values. Clarity is needed to
establish if indeed the UPND Government has quietly decided to open doors to
homosexuality and lesbianism which are explicitly prohibited in Scripture.

CONCERTED, COORDINATED CAMPAIGNS
Lest we forget, various Western governments have been at the push for LGBTQI agenda for a while. Therefore, the infamous rainbow flag incident of 17th May, 2022 should not be seen as isolated event. Observe the following:
 On October, 2011, there was a call by then British Prime Minister Cameron at a
Commonwealth gathering in Australia, to tie donor Aid to the acceptance of LGBTQI
rights;

 A similar call was made by the then USA Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton on the
eve of world human rights day (Geneva, 6th December 2011) Then, in January 2012, a statement was made by then UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, calling for recognition of sexual orientation as a rights issue.

 Shortly thereafter, His Excellency Ban Ki Moon, on his maiden visit to Zambia stood
in our Parliament (24th February, 2012) and became the first UN official to ever mention sexual orientation as a matter of human rights, on site, to Zambian legislators.

This was followed by an exclusive meeting with select NGOs in the tourist capital, Livingstone. The episode in question drew sharp reactions from mostcitizens.

NO MEANS NO!
We see the act of flying the rainbow flags by the Sweden and Finland Embassies as an
attempt to test the waters again. Our response is clear. Zambia has said NO to LGBTQI
propaganda and our No means NO! Do not push our leaders and please do not twist their
arms. Apart from the national values and principles enshrined in Part II, Article 8 of the
Zambia constitution, we note that African Union has two key points out of nine espoused priority tenets on its Action plan for the African family, that call for vital reflection at this
stage, namely, v. Rights of protection of the family; vi. Strengthening of family relationships.

LGBTQI ideology is in direct contradiction to these noble ideals and for that reason stands
rejected.

CLARITY NEEDED
His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, while in
opposition, promised not to entertain homosexual and lesbian rights, and this is one of the reasons the people of Zambia were confident to elect him to the office of President of the Republic.

The recent events are therefore troubling and require clarity from Government. If there has been a change of Government policy, it is better that this is stated clearly and openly.

TREATABLE CONDITIONS
The PAOGZ believes homosexuality and lesbianism are treatable conditions which require empathy to bring affected individuals to a place of liberty and healing. Individual gays are merely being exploited by sponsors of liberal democracy and we will not vouch for that. We resist this war against our consciences and our families, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

As we commemorate Africa Freedom Day and its significance to us as a continent, let us
liberate ourselves from the pressure of bilateral aid and multilateral commitments that might unnecessarily entangle us.

Shibukombe Scampers For His Life Naked After Presenting K4 As Nsalamu

SHIBUKOMBE SCAMPERS FOR HIS LIFE NAKED AFTER PRESENTING K4 AS NSALAMU

Mufulira has gone viral after a marriage counsellor commonly referred to as shibukombe was seen racing in Zimba compound with his old birth suit during broad day light paving his way in Lunsonga.

According to available stories, this incident happened on 7th March, 2022 in zimba compound of Mufulira.

A middle aged man identified as Mupesa Kennedy standing for his cousin took nsalamu in the afternoon as they could not manage in the evening.

Grace Phiri, a 19 year old could not hold the joy, she kept smiling and blushing like a pure virgin before being exploited and dumped.

Mr. Mupesa in the company of his friends were warmly welcomed into the loosely structured name of a house which required them to bend half way to get inside.

The conversation was going well until Mr. Mupesa displayed the small white plates, a sign of accomplishment to many lazy ladies, and the mere display of the small plates forced the girl’s father to shower the visitors with sweet munkoyo and roasted chicken.

A few minutes later, the girl was called and as our culture entails she was asked if she knew where the nsalamu was coming from, like a desperate 39 year old woman with menopause in mind, she agreed before the father could reach the punctuation and everyone smiled.

An old family member from Grace’s family drew close and reached for the plates which were put in the middle of the room.

However, after uncovering the plates he found a k4 smiling at him, he went to the girl’s father and whispered in his left ear, they have brought a K4.

In rage, the girls father asked if the visitors came to mock his daughter and before they could respond chaos was already ignited as the father had already left his chair asking everyone to disperse.

Mr. Mupesa who is believed to be a typical Bemba rose from his chair and laughed at the response of the girl’s father.

“Are you selling your child?” he asked, “nsalamu could be any amount. Okay, we will top up another K2.” he said repositioning his cap.

Hearing these words angered the girl’s father who flew from his bedroom and took hold of bashi bukombe….

Heaven broke loose, punches and kicks were all over, old jackets scattered everywhere. It was a fierce fight no one has ever witnessed.

Women ran out of the house to call for help but it was too late. Before people could come in to help, the council of elders had scattered into different directions and Mr. Mupesa was seen scampering for his life naked after the alleged sound beating.

Meanwhile, lots of people have been left dumbfounded failing to understand who was in the wrong. Mr. Mupesa despite being injured reportedly managed to get the K4 as he ran out.

I Will Not Stop Talking, In Fact I Will Do More After Seeing What A Ruthless Dictator President Hichilema Is- Chilufya Tayali

By Chilufya Tayali

DON’T TELL ME TO STOP TALKING FOR MY FAMILY’S SAKE, INSTEAD, TELL PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO RULE THIS COUNTRY WELL FOR THE SAKE OF OUR FAMILIES, INCLUDING HIS, BECAUSE HE WILL NOT BE PRESIDENT FOREVER

You keep saying, if you love your wife fyoto-fyoto….., your children mfwe-mfwee ….., your…..bla-bla-blah, give me a break!!!!✋✋✋

I WILL NOT STOP TALKING, IN FACT I WILL DO MORE AFTER SEEING WHAT A RUTHLESS DICTATOR PRESIDENT HICHILEMA IS.

Yes, President Hichilema is a bloodthirsty dictator and it won’t take long before he starts killing us, since we will not stop talking. President Hichilema and the UPND don’t want us to talk.

I love each one of my children and I have suffered for them. I want to see them grow and be responsible adults.

If I will live to see my children well settled, with their own children, especially Kiya since she is the youngest, I will be very glad, but that is all dependent on God’s plan so I don’t lose sleep about my life.

What pre-occupies my mind is the welfare of my family and many poor people out there. I care for others, including President Hichilema, which is why you saw me speaking for him when he was arrested on treason charges.

I was a hero when I spoke against President Lungu for incarcerating Hichilema, then, but I have turned into a criminal for speaking against the failures of President Hichilema and his ruthless dictatorship.

Just relax, open your eyes and ears, because I have a lot to say on this useless govt of a disaster President Hichilema, unless if he changes and do the right thing.

You want us to be praising nonsense, ifyabupuba ifyabula nokulondoloka, kabiyeni uko mwembula mano imwe.

This man has made things worse than he found them and you want me to praise him, ala, ukutumpa!

He is giving mines to his friends and you want me to applaud him kwati nalipena.

He is raping the constitution in the manner he is bulldozing the DPP out office and other judicial officers.

Look at what happened to the magistrates, transferring them out of vindictiveness and patronage. #Unacceptable and #Unfair

This Disaster President never saw anything good in other Presidents yet they did much better than him, yet he wants to be praised, how #folly can one be.

Kambwili maintains that Obed Kasongo died of malaria

“I have suffered many court cases , so I will not be careless to say that Bowman Lusambo Killed Obed Kasongo. That is tantamount to defamation,” Patriotic Front (PF) member Chishimba Kambwili has said.

Reacting to social media backlash over an article he is alleged to have stated that the late National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth chairperson Obed Kasongo died of Malaria and not from an assault allegedly perpertuated by Kabushi Lawmaker Mr Lusambo, Mr Kambwili said he will not be subjected to face court for defamation.

He however said that his statement to police will remain as it is, but that if people were aggrieved over the postmortem report which indicated that Mr Kasongo died of Malaria, they should seek a second opinion.

“At no point have I ever said that Bowman did not kill Kasongo. All I said is that there is a postmortem which indicates that he died of Malaria and it was carried out by a Russian pathologist. So those who feel that the postmortem is wrong, they have a right to a second opinion. Otherwise, the family have informed me that they will go by the postmortem currently available and have no plans to exhume the body,” he said.

Speaking at a media briefing at his residence, Mr Kambwili said people who needed a second opinion should go to police and check the records because it is up to police to open the records.

“I have been attacked left , right and center over the article. As I stand, I will not accuse anyone to Say that they killed Mr Kasongo, it is not me to say that,” he said.

The former National Democratic Congress party leader also condemned , what he described as an unbecoming behaviour of transporting political opponents to far flung areas when an alleged crime is committed. “I am not against people being arrested, the security wings have a right when they feel someone has perpertuated a crime. However, being bundled up and dragged to far flung areas to answer to charges should come to an end. Such an act is an extra judicial punishment which is not confirmatory with the law,” he said. Headman Njobvu advises HH to verify reports he receives from officials

Headman Njobvu advises HH to verify reports he receives from officials

HEADMAN Nyamtuma Njobvu of Kapoche constituency in Sinda district has advised President Hakainde Hichilema to be careful with his government officials as they tarnish his name on the ground.

In a statement, Njobvu reminded the President that in most cases the positive reports he received about what was transpiring on the ground were not correct.

“My message to our President Hakainde Hichilema is, be careful; be clever with the people you have whom you entrusted to advise you or report to you because they will lie to you about what is happening on the ground. Mr President, confirm the reports by going round the country and see how your people suffer than believing their reports which are not true” he said

Njobvu said some government officials on the ground were tarnishing government’s name due to their untrusted activities and failure to convince the public to have patience and trust in the government.

“Your people on the ground are tarnishing your name. Go round and see the true picture of what is happening,” Njobvu said further. “From the time we changed government, change is pathetic. Look, CDF money is out but people are not funded. As a result, people are complaining that is this the development we expected? We expect development which this party in government promised during campaigns. We can’t talk of PF now, it’s gone. We expect this government to correct things as per our expectations.”

On agriculture, Njobvu said it was sad that government was allowing briefcase buyers to rob farmers.

On maize, he said there would be no bumper harvest to talk about this season.

“There is no bumper harvest this year

because of late inputs delivery and poor rainfall pattern. We don’t have maize and it’s difficult to sell some because even now some families sleep on empty stomach while at times, they eat pumpkins,” said Njobvu. “Remember that during campaigns you depended on the poor for your victory because your fellow well up can’t vote for you. So, if you dump a poor person, then the nation won’t move in a positive direction.’ – The Mast

President Hichilema is Entrenching Dictatorship

By Amb.Emmanuel Mwamba

In any thriving Democracy the Judiciary is expected to be the last bastion of truth, civility and hope.

It has been defiled.

The Judiciary ought to be the last bastion of hope against tyrany and dictatorship. When all else fails, people run to the Judiciary, alive or dying, to obtain much needed redress.

But this may no longer be so in Zambia! We are in a quick race and detorariation into a fully fledged dictatorship.

Public Service workers are being victimized, transfered or fired on the assertions that they belong to the former Patriotic Front.

Institutions such as ZESCO and ZICTA have also been engaged in a systematic purge.

So the recent changes done by the Judicial Service Commission following a protest by UPND cadres at Lusaka Magistrate Complex and by State House entrenches the growing assertions and fears that President Hakainde Hichilema is engaged in a totalitarian control of all law enforcement agencies and all wings of Government.

10.Felix Kaoma (Resident Magistrate).

11. Alice Walusiku (Resident Magistrate).

Last week, Hon. Ro and Chitotela, Bowman Lusambo and Milingo Lusaka scored court battle victories that sparked a protest against the Judiciary.

President Hakainde Hichilema joined the angry fray of his cadres with his postings; “Ubuchenjeshi bwa Nkoko, Pungwa tasakamana” and his warning; “the perpetrators of the vice may flaunt short-lived victories, play victim and mock the institutions of law and order. However the long arm of the law and wheel of Justice will surely catch up with them”

MMD WRANGLES DEEPEN AS POLITICAL GIBBERISH CONTINUES

MMD WRANGLES DEEPEN AS POLITICAL GIBBERISH CONTINUES

By Scoop Reporter

CONFUSION in the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) are far from over as the turbulence seems to have just begun with Nevers Mamba’s faction now saying that those saying their leader’s tenure has come to an end have shady and subversive.

Contrary to some party officials’ claim that Dr. Mumba’s tenure has come to an end, MMD spokesperson Cephas Mukuka says Dr Mumba was elected MMD President on May 25, 2012 by a convention in accordance with article 38 (1) of the party Constitution, for an initial period of five years.

Dr. Mukuka says Dr. Mumba’s term was to end in May of 2017 when he would have had the option to seek re-election for his second term but that in May 2016, a group of people ignored the provisions of the party constitution and used unconventional rules to organise a convention and elected themselves to party positions.

He says those people, led by now Patriotic Front (PF) member, Raphael Nakacinda, proceeded from that convention to effect changes to the names of office bearers at the Registrar of Societies and that this led to a protracted court process taken out by the National Secretary of the MMD against the convenors of the “2016 convention”.

He says November 15, 2019, the matter was concluded and that the 2016 convention with all its outcomes were nullified and the Registrar of Societies was ordered to rectify the register and revert to the names that existed on the MMD register before the illegal convention.

“Dr Mumba immediately set out to mobilise the party into holding an elective convention so as to renew the mandates of all elective positions. The National Executive Committee of the party called for a convention in accordance with Article 15. On March 20, 2021, a virtual convention was held and elections supervised by Foundation for Democracy and Progress (FODEP) were successfully conducted. This was the beginning of the second term for Dr Mumba as per the MMD constitution.

“The MMD president is currently in his second term as President of the party. Therefore, his term of office will terminate in 2026. Any statement stating otherwise is meant to hoodwink the members of our party and allege something that is completely unsupported by our party constitution,” Dr. Mukuka said.

Open Letter To President Hakainde Hichilema And Vice-president Reverend Mutale Nalumango

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA AND VICE-PRESIDENT REVEREND MUTALE NALUMANGO:

IS THIS THE NEW DAWN OF LGBTQ+ RIGHTS IN ZAMBIA?

By CHARLES KACHIKOTI

Given that you are the top two elected leaders of the Republic of Zambia, you need to openly and clearly explain why it is that under your watch, in the space of one week, two embassies in Lusaka hoisted LGBTQ+ flags on their premises, and NGOs that promote gay rights held a full conference in Siavonga to strategize on decriminalizing homosexuality in Zambia.

These are crucial matters, especially given that homosexuality is illegal in Zambia; given that no previous Zambian government ever permitted organized homosexuality any space; and given that gay rights is a matter that has surrounded the UPND from its opposition days.

Here are two reasons why you, President Hichilema and Vice-President Nalumango, need to come out with utmost clarity:

1) In October 2019, online media in Zambia reported that President Hichilema attended a meeting in the resort town of Lake Como in Italy of the Africa Liberal Network (ALN), an organisation which promotes liberal values, including homosexuality (as minority rights). ALN has in its corporate membership 47 political parties and 29 countries in Africa. The meeting is said to have taken place under the auspices of the South African-based Brenthurst Foundation.

2) On October 3, 2019, Colin Stewart, writing in 76crimes.com, reported a statement by UPND youth spokesperson Gilbert Liswaniso:

“We as UPND youths we wish to state that despite President HH FULLY supporting gay rights, he remains an elder at the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) and therefore a Christian. President Hichilema is of the view that gays and lesbians are part of us and should be allowed to do what they want. Zambia does not belong to Christians only. We have Muslims, Hindus and many other religions so we should seek to respect people’s choices of what they want to be. As youths of UPND we endorse President Hichilema’s stance and ask well-meaning Zambians to fully respect rights of gays and lesbians people. We stand UNITED for gays and lesbians.”

So far, there is no time that the UPND as a member of ALN has convincingly explained its position on LGBTQ+ rights, and official disclaimers of public concerns have always been vague and roundabout. And there is no time when the UPND leadership ever categorically refuted what Gilbert Liswaniso stated.

It will therefore be proper, honest and sincere for you, President Hichilema and Vice-President Nalumango, to state in clear terms if the UPND supports and promotes gay rights. You need to state clearly whether, now that you are the ruling party, you will now pursue the decriminalization of homosexuality and legalization of gay marriages and all that goes with that. So far, the public evidence from the last one week is suggesting that you have opened the doors and it is a New Dawn for LGBTQ+ in Zambia.

I will present you only 10 questions to digest:

ARE YOU AWARE THAT IF YOU LEGALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY, YOU MUST DECRIMINALIZE PAEDOPHILIA (CHILD DEFILEMENT), CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, CHILD MARRIAGES AND CHILD SEX TOURISM?

Look at the North American Man and Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), which was formed in 1978. It is a child-molesting homosexual group that works day and night to give gays legal access to children who are eight-years-old. This association’s motto is “sex before eight before it’s too late.” Apart from marching in most major homosexual parades across the United States, NAMBLA is working to change laws to allow gays sexual access to children. The name of this association comes from the historical reality that homosexuality is not man-on-man sex, but man-on-boy. Related entities worldwide have the very same goals, even if they fail to come out as categorically and openly as this.

If Zambia embraces gay rights, you must allow homosexuals access to children and decriminalize child defilement, child porn, child marriage and child sex tourism where tourists visit a country to have sex with children.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT ORGANIZED HOMOSEXUALITY IS ANTI-GOVERNMENT AND ANTI-SOCIETY, AND AIMS TO SUBVERT NATIONS?

Have you read the Gay Manifesto, published in the February 15-21, 1987 Gay Community News by Michael Swift. It states in part: “We shall sodomize your sons, emblems of your feeble masculinity, of your shallow dreams and vulgar lies. We shall seduce them in your schools, in your dormitories, in your gymnasiums, in your locker rooms, in your sports arenas, in your seminaries, in your youth groups, in your movie theater bathrooms, in your army bunkhouses, in your truck stops, in your all male clubs, in your houses of Congress, wherever men are with men together. Your sons shall become our minions and do our bidding. They will be recast in our image. They will come to crave and adore us.”

ARE YOU AWARE THAT SLAVE TRADERS BROKE THE AFRICAN MALE’S SPIRIT BY RAPING BLACK MEN ANALLY IN FRONT OF THEIR WIVES AND CHILDREN WHEN THE SLAVES TRIED TO PROTEST?

The rape of men was prevalent in the southern parts of America, Cuba and Spain where it was a huge part of the slavery system and culture. While homosexual rape happened in secret locations and on slave plantations, ‘buck breaking’ or ‘bot bursting’ happened in front of the public or the entire plantation personnel to make the slave feel less of a man. This became standard treatment for botched slave rebellions. The men would first be stripped naked and whipped in the presence of a crowd, and after that, raped by the slave owners or merchants as a warning to other slaves. The targets were mainly the brave men, leaders in the plantations. To make matters more gruesome and unbearable, the slave owners made the African slave fathers to have sex with each other in front of their families. Or they were raped in the presence of their sons. Many of the men killed themselves or ran away after this. Buck breaking started from ships and continued in plantations as a way of stripping male slaves of their pride and power to protect their families. It was also a way for slave owners to show dominance. Why should we African men now long for anal sex and announce our enslavement and humiliation all over again?

Credible research institutions have placed more information than this on the Internet.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT IF YOU LEGALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY, YOU WILL DESTROY MARRIAGE, FAMILY, FATHERHOOD AND MOTHERHOOD AS WE HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN THEM?

Carl Wittman (1943-1986) is one of the early influences behind gay rights. In his 1969 write-up Refugees from Amerika, A Gay Manifesto, dismisses marriage (of males and females) and the family as tools of social oppression and sexual limitation. Under the subheading Alternatives to Marriage, he says: “We have to define for ourselves a new plurastic, role-free social structure for ourselves. It must contain both the freedom and physical space for people to live alone, live together for a while, live together for a long time, either as couples or in large numbers; and the ability to flow easily from one of these states as our needs change. In other words, people should be at liberty to flow into and out of sexual relationships of all kinds without obligation to anyone. At its core, Wittman’s ideology is the very definition of prostitution accepted by society.

If Zambia ends up promulgating gay rights, we will dethrone marriage and elevate prostitution as the ultimate expression of liberty.

In the US and Europe today, it is becoming very difficult for anyone to use the terms ‘man’, ‘woman, ‘boy, ‘girl’ or pronouns ‘he’ or ‘she’. Men who have had no surgical operation have gone to court to be termed ‘woman’. When such males are imprisoned, they are placed with female inmates and pregnancies are happening. They are competing in women’s sports and they are winning. In such societies, women are husbands and fathers in lesbian relationships, and men are wives and mothers in homosexual relationships. Is this the kind of society you want Zambia to become?

ARE YOU AWARE THAT IF YOU LEGALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY, THEN YOU WILL BE ON THE WAY TO LEGALIZING BESTIALITY, NECROPHILIA AND ALL SEXUAL PERVERSIONS CURRENTLY CONSIDERED DISORDERS?

On October 5, 2011, the British newspaper The Telegraph said: “The gay rights movement has moved American society to a point where it at least has to consider legalizing things like polygamy and bestiality.” Because of vehement promotion of gay rights, bestiality (zoophilia) and necrophilia (sex with the dead) are hot topics in western parliaments and other platforms. That is an inevitable outcome of legalizing homosexuality.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT IN THE WEST HEMISPHERE WHERE HOMOSEXUAL RIGHTS ARE RECOGNIZED, THE SOCIETIES THERE HAVE FAILED TO SETTLE WITH GAYS?

The LGBTQ+ movement would have Africans believe that permitting gay rights promotes social harmony and cohesion in society. Yet Forbes.com on November 11, 2021 reported that 375 transgender people were killed that year, the deadliest year for such persons since such matters began to be recorded. The annual global list is released November 20 each year for the Transgender Day of Remembrance. The report, by Jamie Wareham, said the majority of the murders happened in Central and South America (70 per cent). “But like last few years, the most deaths in a single country occurred in Brazil, totalling 33 per cent of global deaths.” Cases from Greece, Kazakhstan, and Malawi were reported for the first time too.

Statista.com observed a consistent increase in transgender murders in the US, with 53 killed in 2021. The Human Rights Campaign reports that in the US at least 26 transgender people were killed in 2018, another 29 in 2017, a total 23 in 2016 and 22 in 2015. This is what has been happening: A man purposes to have sex with a woman he later discovers is actually a man—a number of male lovers have simply lost it and exploded. It is within this context that at least 129 bills against LGBTQ+ were introduced in numerous states across the US in 2017, according to a report by the Human Rights Campaign.

Simply put, introduce gay rights in Zambia and you increase this line of homicides.

ARE YOU AWARE OF AN INCREASED SUICIDE RATE AMONG GAYS IN THE WEST?

Writing in nbcnews.com on April 20, 2021, Dan Avery reported that suicide rates among young people had been on the rise in recent years, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, but gay and bisexual youths were almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide as their straight peers. If the gay lifestyle has raised suicide rates among youths of America in recent years, why should this be promoted to African youngsters who already face numerous personal pressures?

ARE YOU AWARE THAT IF YOU LEGALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY YOU WILL CREATE AN ETHICAL CRISIS AND DESTROY CLARITY OF MORAL THOUGHT IN ZAMBIA?

If we legalize homosexuality and recognize gay rights, our entire ethical sense will be thrown into an irredeemable crisis. When compared to natural heterosexual marriage, gay marriage is not sacred. It has no biblical—or for that matter any other religious—basis for existence as an exclusive and permanent companionship. The nature of homosexuality is that it does not require loyalty and faithfulness in and outside marriage because there is no moral or spiritual foundation for such commitment. Same-sex marriage has nothing to do with offspring, progeny, legacy and destiny. It is self-exclusion and self-expulsion from the normal and natural family tree and therefore from the normal ethics of life.

Homosexuality and lesbianism by nature have no ethics, and have no reason to follow any ethical standards. In their 1978 study, Homosexuality: A Study of Diversity Among Men and Women, published by Simon and Shuster in New York, Alan p. Bell and Martin S. Weinberg established that 28 per cent of homosexual men had more than 1000 partners in their lifetimes; 83 per cent estimated they had had sex with 500 or more partners.

CAN YOU NAME ONLY ONE TRIBE IN ZAMBIA WHICH HOLDS INITIATION CEREMONIES FOR HOMOSEXUALS AND LESBIANS, AND WHICH HOLDS MARRIAGE CEREMONIES FOR THEM AND PROTECTS HOMOSEXUAL MATRIMONY?

If you cannot, then you have no right to open the doors to foreign powers to pour in their ideas and dismember our cultural essence, and scatter our ethnic sensitivities and sensibilities.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT HOMOSEXUALITY IS TREATABLE?

It is not homophobic to state that homosexuality is a state of being that many gays do exit from and marry and have children. There exist scientific entities that serve to treat homosexuality. One is the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, also known as the NARTH Institute, a US organization promoting conversion therapy, from its formation in 1992. NARTH considers homosexuality a disorder for which it offers therapy and other regimes that change sexual orientation of individuals who experience unwanted same-sex attraction. NARTH is dedicated to “affirming a complementary, male-female model of gender and sexuality.” NARTH disagrees with the global scientific consensus, the position of the world’s major mental health organizations, and scientific research which show that homosexuality is not a disorder. NARTH has since joined the Alliance for Therapeutic Choice and Scientific Integrity.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT HOMOSEXUALITY IN 2022 IS ABOUT A NATION’S SOVEREIGNTY?

In 2011, the US and the UK warned they would use foreign aid to push for homosexuality to be decriminalized in Africa. In March 2013, the European Union offered financial support for organizations that wish to promote rights of gay people in Zambia. The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) strongly and flatly rejected the offer and warned the EU against interfering in the internal affairs of Zambia; going as far as demanding an apology from the union. Of course no apology came forth. Almost every time our courts have sentenced homosexuals to jail, western heads of state have phoned our sitting presidents to protest—questioning our sovereignty.

Do not imagine that homosexuality is merely about two men or two women in a room, impacting no one else. It is about subverting a nation and weakening its morality for greater nations to swoop in and control its land and natural resources.

The sovereignty and integral existence of the Republic of Zambia are at stake. I hope you are able to recognize this, our President Hichilema and Vice-President Nalumango.

YOU’RE NOT JESUS…you are suffering because you are a thief, priest tells plunderers

YOU’RE NOT JESUS

…you are suffering because you are a thief, priest tells plunderers

By Darious Kapembwa in Lufwanyama

IF you stole money and you are followed to pay back don’t say ‘I am suffering like Jesus’, you are suffering because you are a thief, you are not Jesus, says Catholic priest Chewe Mukosa.

Fr Mukosa, a Franciscan priest and parish priest at St Joseph Mission in Lufwanyama, made the remarks during homily yesterday in apparent reference to the Council of Jerusalem which was based on the first reading of yesterday’s mass.

Fr Mukosa, who is popularly known as the social-teacher because of his pro-poor humanitarian projects in the vulnerable communities, said the nation was today enjoying freedom of speech without anyone being arrested or intimidated.

“…and today people are saying they didn’t steal but why are you afraid of being searched if you didn’t steal?” he wondered. “If I say come we search you because you were working in public office and you say ‘no they are persecuting me’. Someone shamelessly is saying they are persecuting me like they persecuted Jesus Christ. Someone umukulufye [an adult] saying they are persecuting me like Jesus. Are you Jesus? That I am suffering like Jesus. You are suffering because you are a thief. That’s why you are suffering. Jesus Christ suffered because he was innocent. That’s why he suffered,” Fr Mukosa said.

He emphasised that Jesus Christ did not suffer for being a thief but because he was innocent.

“Some of our politicians took money and they are being followed that you are a thief we need our money back,” he noted.

Fr Mukosa said the money that is being collected from those who stole should be given to the Church so that it can be used to help the poor and vulnerable people in society.

“That money landed into wrong hands that is why it must be given to Sisters (nuns) to help in their care for the poor,” he said in apparent reference to nuns who take care of the deaf and dumb students within the mission.

Fr Mukosa, who has been mobilising resources to build small low cost habitable houses for the aged and homeless, said if the money that is reported to have been stolen by some leaders who occupied public office was given to his social-teacher organisation he could build more houses for the poor.

He said the Council of Jerusalem which Paul and Barnabas convened in 50 AD to resolve misunderstandings that had arisen among the Jews was a reminder that nothing in this world can’t be resolved by sitting down together.

He urged the congregation and the nation to embrace dialogue as a strong tool for conflict resolution.

Fr Mukosa said the freedom of speech that the nation was enjoying now meant that people can strongly criticise, advise or condemn without fighting.

HOMOSEXUALITY UNDER UPND

HOMOSEXUALITY UNDER UPND

The Candidates’ Editorial Comment

BEFORE the United Party for National Development (UPND) won elections last year, we never witnessed any open promotion of LGBTQ in this country by those who are promoting this vice, this corruption of morality in our society.

We remember vividly that this issue has for a long time been a hot issue. Political opponents used the LGBTQ to discredit others. We saw how in 2011 the then ruling party the MMD used this issue to decampaign the Patriotic Front of Michael Sata. Bowman Lusambo and Dora Siliya as well as many members of the MMD were telling people that if Sata and PF won, they would introduce gay marriages.

Equally, prior to the 2021 elections and before, the PF distanced themselves from gay rights and said the UPND and Hakainde Hichilema would bring gays in Zambia. This is something that Hakainde and his UPND denied.

Today, in the Hakainde led administration, the presence of LGBT activities are becoming more vivid than ever. Has Hakainde allowed this homosexuality, this immorality in our country?

We’re asking this because it is very clear that the activities of these elements who practice and promote LGBT are now open and increasing under Hakainde’s administration than any other President in this country.

It seems these elements who are promoting this immorality feel very safe under the current administration. They feel protected and can do as pleased without expecting any problems. Why have we seen this under Hakainde’s administration?

Just in case Hakainde and his administration feel and think there is nothing wrong with LGBT, there are many people who do not agree with this immorality. Therefore, they should not force down on the throat of the citizens this LGBT immorality in our society which is entrenched in values that stand in conflict with homosexuality. If these elements are going to be allowed in Zambia, it shouldn’t be up to Hakainde and his administration to make that choice. It should be the people. The people must be engaged. Therefore, there is need for us to engage into a referendum over this issue because clearly there are many who think homosexuality has no place in Zambia.

What is surprising is the loud silence by the Church and many elements who take themselves as holly an morally upright. The Church has been so loud condemning politicians and calling them all sorts of names. Yet, they are silent about an issue which directly concerns them. If anything, it should be the Church that should champion calls to put an end to this LGBT immorality that is slowly finding it’s place in Zambia.

We dare say, the LGBTQ fight has been lost right in the eyes of those who pontificate Christian values, taking themselves as holly and accusing politicians of being corrupt.

Perhaps the Church in Zambia is morally bankrupt and corrupt. Most of those who preside in these Christian institutions are crooks, dishonest and corrupt bandits who are sponsored and paid before they can talk about anything.- The Candidates

It’s hypocritical and fraud to disqualify citizens above the age of 45 from the ongoing teacher recruitment- EFF

The opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has charged that it is hypocritical and fraud to disqualify citizens above the age of 45 from the ongoing teacher recruitment programme by the Government.

The Government through the Ministry of Education is in the process of employing 30,000 teachers, with about 100,000 practitioners having applied for the jobs.

According to the Zambia Daily mail report, Teaching Service Commission (TSC) chairperson Daphne Chimuka said applicants aged above 45 and foreign nationals were eliminated from the recruitment.

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has already finished scrutinising applications in the teacher recruitment process at district level.

But EFF Secretary General Changala Siame said his party was disappointed by the decision of the government through the Ministry of Education, to disqualify teachers aged above 45 from the enrolment.

Mr. Siame observed that some of the unemployed teachers aged above 45 have been denied an opportunity to be employed in the previous governments for many years.

He said leaving out qualified teachers that completed earlier and prioritizing those that completed recently is a signal of corruption and demanded ACC to take interest in this process.

“The disqualification of citizens above 45 to be enrolled as teachers is hypocritical. As Economic Freedom Fighters EFF, we are disappointed by the decision of the government through the Ministry of Education, to disqualify any person who is a qualified Teacher but has attained the age of 45 years or above. This is a very unfair approach to enrollment of citizens who for a long time have been denied an opportunity to be employed in the previous governments. Actually as Economic Freedom Fighters EFF, our expectations in terms of criteria for employment were supposed to be; first completed first to be considered for employment,” Mr. Siame said.

“This was the most suitable and equitable approach as the selection will only be based on papers submitted without personal interviews. If anything, any selection that will leave out qualified Teachers that completed earlier and prioritize those that completed recently, is a signal for corruption and we demand ACC to take interest in this process,” he continued.

Mr. Siame questioned why the same government that has sent senior citizens in foreign missions is denying teachers aged above 45 a chance to be employed.

“Besides, this government has double standards that render it to be hypocritical. How than did Mr. Steven Katuta, Mr. Panji Kaunda and many other senior citizens qualify for jobs and yet deny people that were youths then who became adults with no job opportunities in the past? Therefore, as Economic Freedom Fighters EFF are demanding that the Minister of Education Mr. Douglas Siakalima to reverse this clause and treat all citizens fairly, equitably with a lot of consideration for their misfortune in life,” Mr. Siame said.

The Teaching Service Commission is expected to start announcing names of successful candidates on June 1.

The commission has indicated that the verification process ended on Wednesday last week and that names of people who qualified have been submitted to provinces.

Kenya and Zimbabwe booted out of the 2023 Afcon Qualifiers

0

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Kenya and Zimbabwe will not participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations whose qualifying campaign starts in early June.

Kenya is unable to take part because of Fifa’s ban on them has not been lifted due to Government interference in the running of the game.

Harambee Stars, who were drawn in group C alongside Cameroon, Namibia and Burundi, had needed their ban to have been lifted two weeks before their first Nations Cup qualifier if they were to take part in the 2023 campaign.

However, the Saturday 21 May deadline passed without Kenya being readmitted to the international fold.

The Harambee Stars had been due to play in Cameroon on 4 June before then hosting Namibia four days later.

“As a consequence of having failed to have their suspensions by FIFA set aside, Caf has confirmed that both Kenya and Zimbabwe will not participate in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers,” a statement on the Caf website read.

“The qualifiers will kick off on the first day of June 2022.

“Caf had included them in the official draw earlier in April 2022 on the condition that the suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match day.

“Kenya and Zimbabwe, suspended for political interference, have not yet met the criteria required by the Fifa congress as a prerequisite for lifting their suspension.”

Following the development, Kenya’s Group C will now compromise Cameroon, Namibia and Burundi – with the top two qualifying for next year’s tournament in Ivory Coast.

The world football governing body earlier suspended Kenya after sports ministry disbanded the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over alleged misappropriation of funds and appointed a caretaker committee in November 2021.

Despite the sanction, Harambee Stars were included in the draw for the 2023 Nations Cup, with the CAF giving them a deadline for the ban to be lifted to participate.

Zimbabwe look set to suffer the same fate as Kenya unless they can overturn their own ban by 26 May, with the Warriors scheduled their first game in Group K, which features Morocco, South Africa and Liberia, on 9 June.

TWO THINGS UPND MUST STOP DOING- Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya

TWO THINGS UPND MUST STOP DOING.

By Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya

UPND as a governing system must stop the following two things:

(i) Stop giving further promises, and
(ii) Stop calling public workers as Pf.

Let me start by thanking UPND for managing hooliganism in bus station and markets. President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has done well on this front, in my view. But the administration must make sure that this clean up is not just superficial, but becomes intrenched not only in the UPND ranks but also on the total political scenery of our country.

(1) Stop giving further promises.

As UPND, you have given enough promises to the people. Many of which promises are yet to be fulfilled.

Remember that these promises were given at different levels for example, when Hon Garry Nkombo promised that immediately after HH is sworn in, they will get bulldozers to demolish houses in forest 27, he was just a member of parliament and an NMC in UPND. Now he has more power because in addition to both of those, he has been appointed minister, making it easier to fulfill promises.

There are promises which were time bound, for example the fours of Kwacha appreciation, from 10 hours to 14 hours. This means that such promises and others will never be fulfilled as the timing attached to the promises have already lapsed.

As such people including myself will receive promises from UPND with suspicion because the credibility record is quite poor.

To save the situation, as opposed to giving further promises, UPND should take existing promises as enough and work on fulfilling them.

Putting it more strait, please sell the jet, reduce milie meal to ZMW50.00, reduce the cost fuel to ZMW12.00, reduce fertilizer cost to ZMW250.00, create employment for Youth’s, create business opportunities for Zambian Youth’s, reduce the cost of doing business etc.

These promises once fulfilled, will cause the UPND party to boost its credibility record, and then it would be more appropriate to come up with further promises.

(2) Stop calling civil servants/ public workers as PF.

The first thing to think about is that there are people being employed in the public service right now. Would you want future Governments to regard them as UPND? Of course NO, I hope.

Government is a going concern. This agenda of labeling public workers as Pf is a dangerous one and can cause serious service problems not only to Government but to people as well.

Those police men, nurses, DOCTORS, teachers, JUDGES, soldiers are professionals who are professionally trained. And they fully comprehend the need to serve the Government of the day.

Please give them a break.

They are at your service. Please just apply them well and your objectives will be achieved.

I strongly wish our nation well.

Hon Mutotwe KAFWAYA, MP.
Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

IMFUMU ITUKWA KU MBALI- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

IMFUMU ITUKWA KU MBALI

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

It comes as occupational hazard for a leader to be subjected to criticism.

Infact severe criticism of the worst kind usually meets anyone who occupies the highest Office of the land- the Office of Republican President.

Imfumu itukwa ku mbali.

We may need to remind ourselves that our past leaders have suffered and endured derogatory names and terms.

Founder President, Kenneth Kaunda was ridiculed for his forehead and was called “Cipuma” or “Fonkofonko” and because of his foreign heritage, he was called, “Mwisa mutulatula fye”(a settler from nowhere who has found home amongst us”).

Second President, Frederick Chiluba was mocked for his height (short stature) and some called him “Kafupi”, “Pygmy” or “Dwarf”.

Levy Patrick Mwanawasa was not spared either as he was frequently called “Cabbage” for his slow and slurred speech as a result of that horrific and almost fatal accident he suffered on Airport road in 1992.

Mwanawasa usually responded to this insulting criticism by saying he was a “Steak” and that insults were mere “Vaseline” a leader is smeared with.

Rupiah Banda was referred to as “Nyama Soya” and Michael Sata was called many names including; “Cimbwi no Plan”.

Edgar Lungu was called many names including; “Jermason( After Jameson Whiskey) or Drunken Master “.

At the height of his satirical writings in a column in The Post, Roy Clark popularized names against Presidents such as Old Munshumfwa (KK), Muwelele (Mwanawasa) and others.

Imfumu itukwa ku mbali.

So the criticism of the President, no matter how severe is inevitable and indispensable.

And therefore I do not understand how the government of President Hakainde Hichilema has taken criticism against him with unnecessary extra sensitivity and has invoked an old draconian law to deal with the criticism.

Further President Hichilema is recently on record using harsh and inappropriate words against citizens calling them; “Clique of Thieves”, “Lunatics”, “Fools”,e t.c.

The investigation and arrest of persons such as Economic and Equity Party (EEP) President, Chilufya Tayali, PF Member of the Central Committee in Charge of Information and Publicity, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda, Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) President Sean Tembo and others on the charges of Criminal Defamation of the President, is therefore an unwelcome development.

Tayali and Nakacinda join Zambians that have been charged, arrested and tried by the use of this draconian law.

Post journalists Bright Mwape and Fred Mmembe, political leaders; Frank Bwalya, New Labour Party Leader, Fresher Siwale, University of Zambia academic, Dr. Austin Mbozi, Musician Chama Fumba (Pilato), UPP President, Saviour Chishimba and Edward Makayi are among those that have been previously arrested and tried under this draconian law.

Ordinary citizens have not been spared either.

Sadly a medical doctor; Kwalela Kafunya was in 2020, imprisoned for seven years for defaming President Edgar Lungu.

REPEAL CRIMINAL DEFAMATION OF THE PRESIDENT LAW

There is a global movement to decriminalise Defamation.

This law is injurious to fundamental freedoms and rights of; Freedom of Expression, Freedom to hold thoughts and views, and Freedom of the Press guaranteed in the Constitution.

Zambia is a Constitutional Democracy and promotes the supremacy of the Constitution.

Therefore any written or customary law and practice that is inconsistent with the Constitution is deemed illegal and must be repealed.

It is in the same vein that it is held that no Parliament should make laws to abridge or derogate fundamental freedoms and rights.

It is for this reason that human rights activist have consistently called for the repeal of such laws such as; the Public Order Act and Criminal Defamation of the President that go to restrict freedom of expression, Assembly and Freedom to hold views and opinions.

It has been established that authoritarian governments resort to using criminalization of speech to aid the wide suppression of dissent and the expression of dissenting views.

Unfortunately, Zambia remains one of the few democratic states maintaining Criminal Defamation of the President on its statutes.

Section 69 of the Penal Code provides:

“any person who, with intent to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt, publishes any defamatory or insulting matter, whether by writing, print, word of mouth or in any other manner, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years.”

Proponents of this law say the requirement to respect reputations of others especially the President is paramount.

They say the law is anchored on the need to respect the dignity and worth of fellow human beings which must be upheld.

In this regard people are discouraged from engaging in activities either by words or in writing or even by way of signs that tarnish the image of others and actions that tend to lower a person’s reputation in the estimation of right thinking members of society to the extent that such a person is shunned or avoided.

But if this occurred, a civil route exists to seek redress than undertaking criminal proceedings.

But as a democracy, we may have to accept international standards that shy away from criminalizing speech except in rare circumstances such as incitement of ethnic divisions, incitement to riot, hate speech or publication of obscene material or obscenities especially child pornography.

Recently Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard while visiting President Hichilema at State House, urged him to move with speed to honour his promise on enhancing human rights during his tenure, including repealing oppressive legislation such as the Public Order Act and Criminal Defamation that have been used by successive administrations to curtail human rights and freedom of expression.

There has been a general criticism that Hichilema is scoring very low on human rights record with State apparatus involved in torture of suspects ( Shabby Chilekwa), the arrest of Kenmark Broadcasting Network (KBN) reporter Petty Chanda over the publication and exposing of a recording involving State House Aide and Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Home Affairs planning to undermine the Opposition.

The frequent arrests of political opponents on charges that appear trumped-up, the purge from public offices of persons deemed to belonging to a different political party other than the UPND, has cast Hichilema in bad light as he has reneged on his pledge to promote Democracy, human rights and unity of the country to being accused of quickly fostering a dictatorship rule in Zambia.

UPND on mission to cleanse the whole country of anyone who does not belong to their party – Antonio Mwanza

UPND on mission to cleanse the whole country of anyone who does not belong to their party – Antonio Mwanza

By Daily Star Reporter

To the ruling UPND, anyone who is not UPND does not deserve to live, work or do business in this country, Antonio Mwanza has charged.

The PF Media Director said in a press statement that UPND is on a mission to cleanse the whole country of anyone who does not belong or support UPND.

Mwanza said this following a statement by UPND Sesheke Member of Parliament Romeo Kan’gombe that 98% of the civil servants are PF and must be fired.’

And Mwanza said the statement makes very sad reading and feeds into a “very dangerous rhetoric” that UPND has been pushing against all those that worked or did business under the PF administration.

He charged that “worse,” if you are PF you don’t even deserve to be alive, you should be ostracized and banished from Zambia.

“This is a very dangerous scheme that must be stopped before this country is turned into a one party UPND Nation. According to the UPND philosophy Zambia gained its independence the day they won elections in 2021; before that, Zambia was a nation in turmoil and civil strife, the country was a ‘war’ zone until they came to power to give us peace and freedom of expression,” he said.

“How delusional can one be? It’s an insult to our founding fathers who fought for this nation’s independence we all enjoy today and yes, it is a slap on the face of the gallant men and women who fought for the multiparty democracy that gave this same UPND a chance to participate and win an election.”

Mwanza said the UPND must understand that not everyone can or should support them.

He said Zambia is a multi-party democracy and people must be free to support any political party of their choice without fear of retribution or fear of loss of work or business.

“It is clear that UPND does not understand who civil servants are, let alone, they don’t understand the structure and scope of the civil service. The civil service is the apolitical administrative and management institution of government and it lives in perpetuity beyond any political party or political establishment,” he said.

“UNIP, MMD, PF all came and went but the civil service remained; likewise, UPND will also go but the civil service will remain. So to look at the civil service as an enemy and not an arm of Government’s administration and management that will outlive all political parties and political administrations is to lack both knowledge and foresight.”

He wondered who told them that Zambia only belongs to UPND cadres.

“Who is a civil servant? All public service workers including government administrators, teachers and health workers are civil servants. So according to UPND all the teachers, nurses, doctors, administrators etc that they found must be fired and replaced with UPND cadres,” he said.

“How? What kind of warped thinking is this? Who tells them that this country belongs only to UPND cadres? Does it mean that every party that comes to power must chase everyone and replace them with their cadres? Do they even know that not every civil servant in today’s government was employed by the administration, some were employed by the MMD? Does it mean that everyone now must belong to UPND for them to get employed? This is very backward and dangerous thinking and time has come for UPND to stop this kind of hatred and discrimination against fellow Zambians on account that they don’t belong to their Party.”

Mwanza said he is not naive to note that at the heart of Romeo Kang’ombe’s statement that the UPND should fire 98% of the current civil servants is the UPND’s scheme to target and get rid of all the civil servants who come from certain regions.

He said politics is a service to the people and should not be reduced to personalities and tribal hegemony.

“This is not even a secret; everyone knows how this Government is targeting people from certain regions. UPND must get rid of this hatred against fellow Zambians. We are all Zambians whether PF, UPND or any other political party. Politics is a service to the people and should not be reduced to personalities and tribal hegemony,” he said.

“For their own information, UPND must know that these same civil servants they are harassing today actually voted for UPND. No Zambian must lose a job or be denied business opportunities based on the political party they support. Instead of harassing them, the UPND must embrace and work closely with our teachers, nurses, doctors and all the other civil servants to push the development agenda for Zambia forward.”

Mwanza reminded the UPND that they will not be in power forever.

He said they will one day be voted out and their turn to be held accountable for their actions will surely dawn upon them.

Mwanza advised them to be cautious in the manner they are treating Zambians.

UPND not learning from bad habits of PF

UPND not learning from bad habits of PF

We campaigned and won elections among other things, on the premise of getting rid of bad habits imbebed in society by those we took over from.

As a party, we are learning that, embracing bad habits can cost you people-power. Therefore, we have learnt to not learn and embrace bad things.

UPND, the people’s party must not embrace bad habits of the PF; the habits that had former president, Mr. Edgar Lungu booed in heroes stadium, or we would also be booed by the people. But, one thing I am certain of is that, we won’t be booed in that fashion. We shall deliver beyond people’s expectations. We have a selfless leader in charge of National affairs.

As young politicians of today, we must learn how to live together in harmony. Whether or not our political ideals differ, our common ground must always be peace. Young people of UPND are not learning bad things from our predecessors. We will not entertain that.

Wherever I go, I emphasise that to our people that, we must not fight each other. We must deal and fight poverty together with those in opposition. The opposition also, should speak about the plight of the people, so that, government can listen and work on those issues. Not insults. This won’t be tolerated. The rule of law is in active mode, for the first time in history.

To you our friends in opposition, bring out issues on the ground, where there’s no water, where there’s no road, bring out those issues, not what we’re seeing today where to them, giving checks and balances is amounting to insulting the President; we would like to remind those who think are still under a lawless regime, we are not living in a country of lawlessness. We are no longer with that habit of freely insulting leaders as it used to be. We won’t allow you to insult President Hakainde Hichilema on tribal lines, the law will follow you, vigorously. The rule of law has come.

We are no longer in an era where an opposition is treated like they were not a citizen as it was the case of President Hichilema in opposition. We are all Zambians.

To my fellow members of the ruling UPND, we must not becomes lazy because we won elections; people will put others. We must continue as a party to respect our colleagues in opposition, so that Zambia’s democracy seizes to exist only on paper; people must feel, and must be able to touch the democracy being promoted by His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema.

Back in the day, no opposition would have a programme on radio without being attacked or that radio station being vandalised.

When we campaigned against cadres in markets, some members thought it was a joke. Some of our members thought we would take over from the wrongs of robbing from the council, from the markets, from the poor, from the bus drivers. Many are not happy because, Hakainde said no to getting money from markets, and that he has embraced the rule of law.

We give our leader, kudos for his love for Zambia.

I said this when I featured on Millennium Radio’s, “The Interview”, with Mukwima Chilala.

Magistrate Ngobola rejects Lubinda’s challenge on the Economic and Financial Crimes Court

Magistrate Ngobola rejects Lubinda’s challenge on the Economic and Financial Crimes Court

By Mwaka Ndawa

LUSAKA magistrate Stanford Ngobola has ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Court has not been legitimised at the subordinate court, therefore it was irregular for PF acting vice-president Given Lubinda to question its status before the law.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Court at the subordinate court level was not set out under any statute or legislation and was merely set up for administrative purposes to ensure that cases of economic and financial crimes in the subordinate court are presided over in an expedited manner,” magistrate Ngobola explained.

This is in a matter where Lubinda is accused of illegally obtaining US $230,000 from a Chinese company and using part of the money to acquire land in Kingsland City.

At the last sitting, Lubinda’s lawyer Makebi Zulu asked magistrate Ngobola to refer the case to the Constitutional Court as the Economic and Financial Crimes Court had discriminated against the accused administratively.

He said the Constitution provided that divisions at the subordinate court shall be prescribed in relation to Article 123 of the supreme law.
“The provision says jurisdiction and composition should be prescribed and the same has not been done in the case. All persons are equal before the law and creating special courts is unconstitutional as it goes against the principal of equality. Any person facing criminal charges needs to stand at the same footing at the bar of justice,” Zulu said. “The Constitutional Court should interpret Article 128 to determine whether the institution of the Economic and Financial Crimes Court is in conformity with Article 123.”

In response, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Tyson Mudenda said the accused was appearing before the subordinate court which was an established court at law.

He said the administrative decision to establish the Economic and Financial Crimes Court as a sibling of the High Court did not raise an issue for the matter to be referred.

And Martin Mayembe argued that the issue relating to the Economic and Financial Crimes Court was an administrative arrangement by the Chief Justice under Article 133(3) of the Constitution.

He said the Chief Justice under his powers established the said court in the High Court which would hear appeals from its sibling before the subordinate division in accordance with its mandate.

In his ruling, magistrate Ngobola said the Economic and Financial Crimes Court at the subordinate court level was irregular, as it was not an established court.

“It is still a subordinate court, it is loosely referred to as the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to describe that the subordinate court is now addressing cases of economic and financial crimes,” magistrate Ngobola said. “It is presided over by magistrates of the subordinate court and its jurisdiction is governed by the subordinate courts Act Chapter 28 of the Zambian laws. It follows the same processes, procedures of the subordinate court. Its trials occur in the same way as they would in the subordinate court.”
He added that no prejudice would be occasioned to Lubinda.

“I am of the considered view that the issue raised by Zulu is not a constitutional issue for the Constitutional Court to answer. The application lacks merit for it fails and is accordingly dismissed. I order that the main matter be allowed to proceed and the accused be allowed to take plea,” said magistrate Ngobola.

Zulu further made an application to refer the matter to the High Court for determination on whether his client’s rights to a fair trial were being infringed upon as the offence he is alleged to have committed which resulted into him being in possession of tainted property has not been disclosed.

He said he intended to challenge the constitutionality of Article 71 of the Constitution which required an accused person to be in a position to account for what the State suspected to be proceeds of crime, which was unconstitutional.
“The burden of proof is moved to the accused person, which is unconstitutional because he who alleges must prove. The trial is skewed in favour of the State, disadvantaging a person that is accused,” Zulu said.

He submitted that Article 8 of the Constitution provided that national values and principles ought to be taken into consideration, which included respecting the rights and freedoms of an accused, the rule of law and the need to ensure that the spirit of the Constitution was upheld and must give effect to the provisions of the Constitution.

“Due process means that the burden of proof should not be moved on a mere suspicion to an accused person. Charging him for possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime without stating what crime may he have committed is improper and not desirable in a democracy,” Zulu said. “What offence did the accused commit from which he derived a benefit that can be stated to be proceeds of crime and not stated anywhere in the four counts before you? If every other offence does not require a person charged to discharge a burden of proof, the requirements on this particular charge is discriminatory.”
Zulu submitted that any law which is discriminatory is null and void as it offends article 23 of the Constitution.

“Pursuant to Article 28, it is our view that Article 11-26 are being violated and requires the matter to be referred to the High Court for determination. The charge is unlawful as it offends Article 11,13,18,” said Zulu.
ACC prosecutor Tyson Mudenda requested for an adjournment in order to respond to the application.
Magistrate Ngobola adjourned the matter to May 27.

Dr Tasila Tembo died from physical assault, pathologist tells court

By Mwaka Ndawa

FORENSIC pathologist Dr Luchenga Mucheleng’anga has told the Lusaka High Court that the late Dr Tasila Tembo sustained a broken jaw and the cause of her death was blunt impact trauma to her head due to assault.

The court also viewed raunchy videos which murder accused Nigel Mwaba received on WhatsApp from different women and his deceased lover Dr Tembo.

This is in a matter where Lieutenant Mwaba, an army officer, is accused of murdering Dr Tembo between October 24 and 26, 2020 after she decided to end their relationship.
Testifying before judge Wilfred Muma, Dr Mucheleng’anga said he conducted a postmortem on Dr Tembo’s body at the request of the police in 2020.

He said Dr Tembo’s corpse was in a decomposed state but he went ahead and conducted external examination and noticed she had bruises on the upper forearm and her chin.
Dr Mucheleng’anga said he stripped off the skin in search of other injuries.
“During examination, I noticed a cut on the lower jaw of the deceased and the cut had sharp edges. I removed the skin from the face, the lower jaw was broken at the point where it attaches to the head,” Dr Muchelenganga said. “Internal examinations revealed external decomposition of internal organs including the brain. Upon completion of the examination, I came to a conclusion that the cause of death was blunt head trauma to the head due to assault. Based on the size of the bruise, it is clear or possible that the cause of the broken jaw may be as a result of a blunt object which was used to hit the deceased.”

Bernard Fundi, a forensic computer analyst, said he advised police officers at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe to retrieve information from Lt Mwaba’s mobile phones that would be of evidential value in Dr Tembo’s murder case.
He said he retrieved WhatsApp images and videos, messages and other recordings.

Fundi tendered in some raunchy pictures and videos retrieved on Lt Mwaba’s phones as evidence which were viewed in court.
The pictures depicted women’s genitalia while some of the videos depicted women fondling their labia and love making.
Among the videos were those of Dr Tembo fondling her breasts whilst reassuring her love to her estranged lover Lt Mwaba.
“We may have our own differences but know that I love you,” she said.

In another video, the deceased paraded herself in front of the camera, removed her animal print dress and flashed about her green waist beads and black knicker.

“Hey… I just wanted to show you what am wearing at work,” she said and proceeded to undress.
Brigadier General Dr Bernard Kapatamoyo, a commandant at Mainasoko Military Hospital, told judge Muma that he and two provosts (military police officers) apprehended Lt Mwaba at Leopard’s Memorial Park after he was spotted patronising her burial pit.
Dr Kapatamoyo said he was tipped by his sister Kafinda Mulenga who works at Memorial Park that Lt Mwaba was frequenting the burial site and that she had called Woodlands Police Station but there was no quick response from there.

“My sister said the man had gone to the mall and came back. She had compared pictures on social media and noticed it was him. The police at Woodlands did not pick up so she called me and I picked two provost officers and we went to Memorial Park,’’ explained Dr Kapatamoyo. ‘’My sister called me saying Mwaba had noticed their presence and was walking away from the grave yard using Twin Palm Road entrance. The provost officers disembarked and pounced on Lt Mwaba. I approached them, I searched him and he had no weapon but only had beer and a bottle of unknown substance which was handed over to the police. Whilst trying to put him in the vehicle, police officers arrived. We left him in police custody and I wrote a brief to my commandant about what happened.”

Dr Tembo’s aunty, Pheddy Miti narrated that in December 2017 the former introduced her to Lt Mwaba as her lover.
She said in 2018 Lt Mwaba moved into Dr Tembo’s home and they started cohabiting but that she did not approve of them living together without following procedure.

“I got concerned and sat down my daughter and counseled her about her decision to cohabit with Lt Mwaba. I directed her to tell him to organise his people so that we could convene a meeting for marriage negotiations and charge him for the bride price. But she declined saying he was a drunkard, he abused her verbally, and was a possessive lover,” Miti said. “On October 23, 2020, I received a phone call from Tasila who said ‘aunty I’m fearing for my life, I’m dying. I have told Mwaba that our relationship should end but he doesn’t want saying if I can’t have you nobody will have you and you don’t deserve to live’. She pleaded with me to go to her house and talk to Nigel. At 16:00 hours she sent her cousin Katongo to pick me up and I went to her house.”

Miti said when she got home, she did not find the pair and since she was exhausted, she decided to have some rest and instructed the house helpers to wake her up the moment the pair returned home.

“I woke up at midnight and asked one of the workers if Tasila had returned home and she said Tasila had returned home but she had left. I scolded them for not following my directives and I went back to bed. At 05:00 hours I called Tasila but her phone was off around 05:00 hours. I asked her mother to call Tasila and Nigel picked up and said Tasila was bathing,” she narrated. “I called Tasila’s line after 30 minutes and it had been switched off. I called her brother Lonjezo who told me that the couple had forsaken him at Total filling station in Ibex after Mwaba tricked him to go and buy bread and some beers. I went to Arakan Barrack so that we could be helped to locate Mwaba as he was the last person to be seen with Dr Tasila.”

The witness said whilst waiting for a response from the Army, she received a phone call from the police informing the family that police officers had picked up a corpse of an unidentified woman.

“We went to the police, I identified her and my family members started crying. She was clad in an orange t-shirt, blue jean and was decomposed. Tasila’s corpse was wrapped in a black plastic bag and partially buried at a traditional burial site in Nanking Army Training Centre in Mikango Barracks,” said Miti. “We found a head woman who said the villagers had picked Tasila’s corpse and took it to the graveyard as they feared that dogs would feast on her body.”

And Wilfred Simundo, an employee at Bwile Guest House in Mazabuka, told the court that Lt Mwaba abandoned an Isuzu twin cab at the guest house and that he reported to the police, and the vehicle was later picked up.

Trial will be concluded in Mongu on June 20 and 22. This is owing to judge Muma’s appointment as Mongu resident judge.

Putin survived assassination attempt at start of invasion, says Ukraine

0

Ukraine has claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin survived an assassination attempt two months ago.

The nation’s Chief of Defence Intelligence Kyrylo Budanov claimed the tyrant was attacked in an “unsuccessful attempt” on his life around two months ago.

He told Ukrainian Pravda: “Putin was assassinated…

“He was even attacked in the line of, as they say, representatives of the Caucasus not so long ago.

“This is non-public information. Absolutely unsuccessful attempt, but it really took place… It was about 2 months ago.”

“Once again, he was unsuccessful. There is no publicity about this event, but it took place. ”

Pravda said the full interview with Mr Budanov will be aired tomorrow.

However, the two incidents were not the first attempts made against the despot’s life as he has reportedly survived five would-be assassins.

In a 2012 interview with filmmaker Oliver Stone for the Putin Interviews, the tyrant explained how someone tried to kill him five times, but that he survived by taking the advice of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro.

He claimed that by personally managing his own security detail he has been able to cheat death.

Earlier this month Budanov – who holds the Major General rank – waded into the Putin health debate, saying he’s in “very bad condition” with cancer and other illnesses ravishing his body.

He said at the time: “Mr Putin is in a very bad psychological and physical condition and he is very sick.”

At the start of May the spy chief warned the the war won’t come to an end until Putin dies.

Major-General Budanov said the Russian leader has effectively signed his death warrant by ordering his troops into Ukraine.

Boldly predicting a Ukrainian victory at the same time as warning that mass-mobilisation in Russia was near, Major-General Budanov issued this veiled threat on Monday evening.

“Leaving him a way to retreat is one of the strategies, but it is almost unrealistic,” he told The New Voice of Ukraine when asked if Putin would survive the war.

“He is a war criminal for the whole world. This is his end, he drove himself into a dead end. Don’t worry, Ukraine will win.”

The Head of the Chief Intelligence Directorate would not be drawn on how the despot would be ousted or assassinated, but did predict that the future of Russia could unfold in one of two ways.

He said that Russia could be divided into multiple parts following its failure in the invasion, or it could be kept whole, but under new leadership.

Major-General Budanov went on to suggest that Russia was less than a week away from mass mobilisation, which would see its non-military citizens required to have a direct involvement in the war.

“Russia has already been enacting covert mobilisation and is preparing to announce a mass mobilisation in the near future,” he told NV.

Man ‘high on cocaine’ breaks in to Qatar’s embassy in France and beats a security guard to death

0

An attacker who was allegedly high on cocaine broke into the Qatar Embassy in Paris and killed a security guard on Monday morning, May 23.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested by police officers after breaking into the embassy, located by the Arc de Triomphe, just before 8am.

The attacker tested positive for cocaine after admitting to punching the unidentified security guard and strangling him to death.

‘A man forced his way in and was challenged by the guard,’ said an investigating source. ‘A fight broke out, and the guard was severely wounded’.

‘He died on the spot following a savage attack,’ the source said. ‘The attacker is known to police for a variety of offences, and also suffers with psychiatric problems.’

Man

The security guard was pronounced dead at the scene and the 38-year-old attacker was immediately arrested by police who were called to the scene.

The arrested man, who is from the Paris suburb of Sevran, was taken to a secure police station in the French capital, where he underwent a medical examination.

It was gathered that police had to seek diplomatic permission to enter the Embassy, which slowed their arrival at the scene.

‘They were based a few doors away, but like the other emergency services, including medics, they had to follow diplomatic protocol,’ said the investigating source.

The attacker, who has not been identified, was known for minor domestic crimes, but had no links with terrorism, said the source.

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that an inquiry had been launched into an alleged murder at the usually highly secure embassy.

‘I can confirm that an investigation was opened today on the count of murder,’ the prosecutor’s office said, adding that it was not clear yet if a weapon had been used.

‘The circumstances of the death of the guard are yet to be determined precisely.’

Today’s incident at the Embassy follows a series of bomb, gun, and knife attacks carried out by Islamic State and al-Qaeda operatives in France.

Back in 2015, the deadliest single terrorist attack ever in the country was recorded when 130 people were killed in Paris.

Earlier in the year, two Paris-born gunmen linked to Al-Qaeda broke into the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, leaving 17 people dead inside and three outside.

South African pastor found guilty of raping 22-year-old man

Pastor Luthando Matodlana of God is Love Ministry in Motherwell, Gqeberha, South Africa, has been found guilty of rape.

Magistrate Aubrey Mashigo found Matodlana guilty in the Motherwell regional court of raping a 22-year-old man in 2013.

Matodlana was taken into custody after being convicted on Friday, May 20, but will appear in court for sentencing on Monday, May 23.

In her judgment, Mashigo said the National Prosecuting Authority’s team had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the former Mpuma Kapa TV resident pastor was guilty.

Matodlana’s victim who was 22 at the time of the incident, told the court shortly after meeting the pastor they spoke on Mxit in January 2013.

He said the pastor invited him to his Motherwell home between February and March. After sitting in the lounge for a brief period Matodlana invited him to his bedroom.

Once in the bedroom, both men sat on the bed and had a brief conversation before Matodlana attempted to kiss him.

The victim testified that Matodlana told him to undress and his refusal outraged the pastor. He said he had been fearful of Matodlana, who made him undress, pulled him onto the bed, forced him to lie face down and then raped him.

Matodlana denied throughout the trial that he had raped the man.

During the trial, Matodlana accused his victim of being a gay sex worker who had attempted to extort money from him.

However, Mashigo rejected the pastor’s allegations against his victim saying they could not be accepted and were false.

The pastor’s victim took to Facebook to share the details of his sexual assault.

Not long after the post was shared Matodlana threatened to file defamation and extortion complaints with the police, saying his accuser had slandered him and demanded he pays him to keep quiet about the incident.

The man says a day or two after posting about his ordeal a police officer asked him to come to the police station to file a complaint of rape.

A meeting later took place between the man, the police and Matodlana, and the pastor’s accuser had agreed to remove the post.

The pastor’s victim lodged a rape complaint against Matodlana on 23 June 2020 after being advised to do so by concerned friends.

Matodlana was arrested on 1 October 2020 and released on bail the same day. He was formally charged in court on 29 October where he pleaded not guilty.

Vladimir Putin could be out of power and in a long-term medical facility by next year, claims former head of MI6

0

Russian president Vladimir Putin could be out of power and in a long-term medical facility by next year, believes a former MI6 chief.

Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of the British Secret Intelligence service between 1999 and 2004, made the prediction on the One Decision podcast amid swirling rumours about the rapidly deteriorating health conditions of the 69-year-old head of state.

“I’m really going to stick my neck out. I think he’ll be gone by 2023,” said Sir Richard, a co-host of the podcast. “Probably into the sanatorium, from which he will not emerge as the leader of Russia.”

“That’s a way to sort of move things on without a coup,” he suggested, adding that the secretary of the security council, Nikolai Patrushev might assume control upon Mr Putin’s departure.

“If my thesis were fulfilled and Putin did disappear into a sanatorium, I think he’s the likely stand-in,” he said. “And of course the stand-in this scenario probably becomes permanent. I mean, you know there is no succession in the Russian leadership. They certainly don’t succession plan.”

The former intelligence chief also forecasted Russia might “break apart” over the next 12 to 18 months due to the sanctions imposed by the West.

His comments come amid mounting speculation about Mr Putin’s health and rumours he is suffering from cancer.

Another former UK intelligence official, Christopher Steele, made similar comments last week, saying the Russian leader left meetings for medical treatments.

“Meetings of the security council that are shown to supposedly last for a whole hour are actually broken up into several sections,” Mr Steele, who wrote a dossier on Donald Trump and Moscow’s alleged interference in the 2016 US election, told LBC radio. “He’s constantly accompanied around the place by a team of doctors.”

Earlier, an oligarch with close ties to Mr Putin was reportedly recorded saying that he is “very ill with blood cancer”.

The unnamed Russian oligarch alleged in the recording that Mr Putin had surgery on his back linked to his blood cancer shortly before ordering the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, according to the US-based New Lines magazine.

The concerns over Mr Putin’s health have increased after videos circulating on social media showed him “shaking uncontrollably”.

In April, Mr Putin was seen clutching a table for the entirety of a 12-minute video clip of a meeting he had with his defence minister.

Recently, video footage of Mr Putin from a meeting with his Tajikistan counterpart Emomali Rahmon showed the Russian leader fidgeting and twisting his foot.

Earlier last week, US film director Olive Stone claimed on the Lex Fridman podcast that he had blood cancer around the time when the filmmaker interviewed him between 2015 and 2017.

“Remember this, Mr Putin has had this cancer and I think he’s licked it,” Mr Stone said.

US will use force to defend Taiwan if China invades- Biden

0

The US will intervene with military force if China moves to invade Taiwan, Joe Biden said on Monday during a visit to Tokyo, in one of the strongest statements of support for Taipei in decades.

On his first trip to Asia during his presidency, Mr Biden said the burden to safeguard the self-ruled island had become “even stronger” following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“That’s the commitment we made,” Mr Biden said in a press conference, adding that any effort by China to use force against Taiwan would “just not be appropriate”.

Such an attack “will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine”, Mr Biden said.

His comments in Tokyo appeared to be a departure from America’s existing policy of “strategic ambiguity” on its position regarding Taiwan, whereby the US has promised to support the government in Taipei but does not explicitly state what it would do in the event Taiwan came under attack.

Washington says it adheres to a “One China Policy” that means it only has formal diplomatic relations with the government in Beijing, while it maintains informal discussions with Taiwan.

Beijing, meanwhile, espouses the “One China Principle” — that China is a single entity which encompasses all disputed territories including Taiwan. President Xi Jinping has previously vowed to regain control over Taiwan — which has been self-governed since after the Second World War — and has not ruled out using force to do so.

Soon after Mr Biden’s statement, a White House official said that there is no change in US policy on Taiwan.

“He reiterated our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself,” the official said, on condition of anonymity.

China has intensified military provocations in the past year, flying record numbers of planes into what Taiwan claims as its airspace. Taipei has called the manoeuvres an act of intimidation, ultimately designed to force it into accepting unification with mainland China.

Mr Biden said these tactics are dangerous. “They’re already flirting with danger right now by flying so close and all the manoeuvres that are undertaken,” Mr Biden, referring to China.

He said the US expects that China would not seize Taiwan by force but added that assessment “depends upon just how strong the world makes clear that that kind of action is going to result in long-term disapprobation by the rest of the [international] community”.

He said to deter China from its aspirations of taking over Taiwan it is necessary that Russian president Vladimir Putin “pay a dear price for his barbarism in Ukraine”, showing China and other nations that such actions are not acceptable.

The strong comments against China are likely to infuriate Beijing, which has previously condemned Washington for “external interference and provocations” on the Taiwan issue.

The statement is the most outspoken so far of Mr Biden’s Asia visit, which began last week in South Korea and includes meetings with the leaders of Japan, India and Australia, members of the “Quad” group of countries.

Also on Monday, the US president announced the launch of a new trade pact dubbed the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF. The pact includes 13 member states that account for 40 per cent of global GDP — Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the US.

It is being touted as a replacement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), from which Washington dropped out in 2017 under then-president Donald Trump.

The IPEF pact, which would allow the US to work more closely with Asian economies on issues such as supply chains, digital trade, clean energy and anti-corruption, does not include Taiwan.

Critics of the framework say it has major limitations, including a lack of incentives to prospective partners such as lowering tariffs or providing greater access to US markets, which make it a poor competitor to the TPP. The details still need to be ironed out, however, with Monday’s launch representing only the start of talks that are expected to take 12 to 18 months.- The Independent

Zambia Does Not Belong To Upnd Alone, It Belongs To Every Zambian- Antonio Mwanza

ZAMBIA DOES NOT BELONG TO UPND ALONE, IT BELONGS TO EVERY ZAMBIAN

By Antonio Mourinho Mwanza

The statement by UPND Sesheke Member of Parliament, Romeo Kan’gombe that ‘98 percent of the civil servants are PF and must be FIRED’ makes very sad reading and feeds into a very dangerous rhetoric that UPND has been pushing against all those that worked or did business under the Patriotic Front administration.

The UPND is on a mission to CLEANSE the whole country of anyone who does not belong or support UPND. To them anyone who is not UPND does not deserve to live, work or do business in this country. Worse, if you are PF you don’t even deserve to be alive, you should be ostracised and banished from Zambia. This is a very dangerous scheme that must be stopped before this country is turned into a one party UPND Nation. According to the UPND philosophy Zambia gained its independence the day they won elections in 2021; before that, Zambia was a nation in turmoil and civil strife, the country was a ‘war’ zone until they came to power to give us peace and freedom of expression. How delusional can one be? It’s an insult to our founding fathers who fought for this nation’s independence we all enjoy today and yes, it is a slap on the face of the gallant men and women who fought for the multiparty democracy that gave this same UPND a chance to participate and win an election.

On the outset the UPND must understand that not everyone can or should support them. Zambia is a multi party democracy and people must be free to support any political party of their choice without fear of retribution or fear of loss of work or business.

It is clear that UPND does not understand who civil servants are, let alone, they don’t understand the structure and scope of the civil service. The civil service is the apolitical administrative and management institution of government and it lives in perpetuity beyond any political party or political establishment. UNIP, MMD, PF all came and went but the civil service remained; like wise, UPND will also go but the civil service will remain. So to look at the civil service as an enemy and not an arm of Government’s administration and management that will outlive all political parties and political administrations is to lack both knowledge and foresight.

Who is a civil servant? All public service workers including government administrators, teachers and health workers are civil servants. So according to UPND all the teachers, nurses, doctors, administrators etc that they found must be fired and replaced with UPND cadres. How? What kind of warped thinking is this? Who tells them that this country belongs only to UPND cadres? Does it mean that every party that comes to power must chase everyone and replace them with their cadres? Do they even know that not every civil servant in today’s government was employed by the administration, some were employed by the MMD? Does it mean that everyone now must belong to UPND for them to get employed? This is very backward and dangerous thinking and time has come for UPND to stop this kind of hatred and discrimination against fellow Zambians on account that they don’t belong to their Party.

We are not naive to note that at the heart of Romeo Kang’ombe’s statement that the UPND should fire 98% of the current civil servants is the UPND’s scheme to target and get rid of all the civil servants who come from certain regions. This is not even a secret, everyone knows how this Government is targeting people from certain regions. UPND must get rid of this hatred against fellow Zambians. We are all Zambians whether PF, UPND or any other political party. Politics is a service to the people and should not be reduced to personalities and tribal hegemony.

For their own information, UPND must know that these same civil servants they are harassing today actually voted for UPND.

No Zambian must lose a job or be denied business opportunities based on the political party they support. Instead of harassing them, the UPND must embrace and work closely with our teachers, nurses, doctors and all the other civil servants to push the development agenda for Zambia forward.

Lastly UPND must always remember that they will not be in power forever, one day they will be voted out and their turn to be held accountable for their actions will surely dawn upon them. Let them be cautious in the manner they are treating Zambians.

Chilanga instant justice: rolling in mud for impregnating an adolescent

Chilanga instant justice: rolling in mud for impregnating an adolescent

TO serve as punishment for impregnating an adolescent, some community members in Shimabala ward of Chilanga district resort to soaking a perpetrator and making them roll in mud.

Rose Kalima, the headwoman in Chitalu village, revealed to #Kalemba that the punishment is served before a matter goes to court, just after it has been established through investigations that an older man has impregnated an adolescent.

“As a community, we give our own punishment so that the perpetrators do not engage in such vices again,” said Kalima.

“If the older man is in the wrong, timaba nyoweka (we soak him) by taking him to the hand pump until he is wet and we make him roll over mud several times.”

She said teenage pregnancies and early marriages are a huge cause of concern in the area as they are rampant.

Kalima said due to poor standards of living, young girls are lured by older men into sexual immorality, as a way of getting out of poverty.

The traditional leader said some older men, who own makeshift shops, go about calling themselves as chief executive officers, as a way of enhancing their value on the romance market.

Kalima said in an attempt to either get money or some groceries like body lotion, most younger girls from poor families succumb to the sexual bargains of older/married men.

“There are a lot of cases here where you find a girl child gets impregnated by a married man, especially when the girl is coming from a poor background and the man seems to have something such as having a kantemba (makeshift shop). And with hope that they will get money and some other material stuff, they get involved into sexual relations at a young age,” the head woman said.

Kalima said in order to restrain teenage pregnancies in Shimabala, there is need for massive sensitisation to educate the girl child in rural areas and more importantly to uplift the likelihood of impoverished families.

Meanwhile, Agness Mwala, a resident in Shimabala, hopes that the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) will help to alleviate poverty in the ward.

UPND IS NOT EXCITED ABOUT LUSAMBO’S APOLOGY

PRESS STATEMENT

23 RD MAY 2022

UPND IS NOT EXCITED ABOUT LUSAMBO’S APOLOGY

While some of you have started apologizing, we can assure you that will not change anything concerning your cases. In fact President HH has already forgiven you for what you did to him and his family. As UPND we are not excited by the apology from Hon Lusambo. We have seen such apologies before from Chilufya Tayali who in a blink of an eye went back to insulting President HH. Not too long ago Lusambo was urging President HH to be strong, so what has happened to the bulldozer? Fool others not UPND.

Ba PF, cry for yourselves because your days are numbered. If there is any person you should blame it’s your former Boss Mr. Lungu for inciting you to steal from the Zambian people through Ubomba Mwibala Alya mwibala. Your arrogance and lack of respect for President HH is a clear testimony that you are hardcore criminals. Ever since the Zambian people kicked you out of office you have never shown any remorse and repentance for the atrocities you committed against the Zambian people.

What you must know is that your days are up and very soon you will be inmates. We are very much aware that corruption fights back very viciously. Yes, we know that you lined up some people in offices of influence to sanitize you. But be assured that you are going to jail very soon. Your sanitizers shouldn’t forget that LUNSHI WA CHIMPWENA BAMUSHIKILA KUMO NE CHITUMBI. Should these sanitizers be found wanting who will sanitize them?

We understand you when you claim that you are being persecuted. Your claim of being persecuted is based on why the big thieves are still moving freely. This is after comparing what you stole to what your big thieves have stolen. Be assured that those big thieves are not free and very soon they will join you in jail. We don’t want to use the usual tradition way of always killing a snake from the head. We are being methodical by decapitating the snake first and later when the snake cannot make any swift movement that’s when we are going for the head.

CRY My BELOVED COUNTRY: SAY NO TO LGBTQI, LGBTQI rights are NOT Human Rights- Rev. Godfridah Sumaili

CRY My BELOVED COUNTRY

SAY NO TO LGBTQI
( Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual, Transgender , Queer, Intersexual)
LGBTQI rights are NOT Human Rights.

By Hon. Rev. Mrs Godfridah Sumaili.

Blessed people of Zambia I implore you to take a resolute and strong stand against LGBTQI.

This wanton plan to distort our Christian identity and expose our people especially young people to destructive , unnatural and queer sexual orientation has no place in our culture and our Christian nation.

The Word of God , the Bible is our foundation, Standard and anchor from which we cannot depart as a Covenant nation.

Homosexuality in Zambia is a crime. It is also an abomination before God Almighty and attracts curses on the land and judgment against those promoting it. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah.

Leviticus 18:22 says,
” You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.”
The Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act #2 of 2016 in the Preamble clearly states the will of the people of Zambia to acknowledge God Almighty as supreme. Zambia belongs to the people of Zambia and not an individual.

Part 2 and Article 8 of the same Constitution outlines our national values and principles which include morality and ethics, human dignity among others.

Foreign Missions whom we host in Zambia have a duty and responsibility to respect and honor our sovereignty and laws of the land.

Zambia also is duty bound to reciprocate. Recently the Swedish and Finish Embassies were flying rainbow flags in support of LGBTQI agenda.

This obviously is a serious abrogation of international protocols and treaties which demand respect of the laws, traditions and cultures of host countries.

Zambia is a Christian nation as enshrined in the supreme law of the land. Respect the will of the people.

We call upon the Government of the day to respect the will of the people expressed through the Constitution which they have given themselves.

It is hypocritical to acknowledge Zambia as a Christian nation and yet permit abominable behaviors and practices that are alien and contrary to our Christian faith and values. It is also a terrible betrayal to the people of Zambia.

CRY MY BELOVED COUNTRY.
Let us put on sack clothes, fast and pray for mother Zambia.

Museveni: For bread, we can use cassava & bananas. For many years now, I don’t eat bread. I eat cowpeas, bananas, millet, beef & G-nuts

The high commodities prices are from the following factors:

The end of pandemic, meant that sectors of the economy that had been closed, such as hotels, suddenly opened when the production of, for instance, palm oil for soap manufacture had also declined because there had been no demand for two years. The resumed production levels cannot yet match the demand.

I also hear, that some of the producers decided to turn their palm oil into petrol, just like we were about to turn our surplus sugar into petrol as a way of solving the problem of kyengera (surplus).

The war in Ukraine and Western sanctions on Russia, have also caused shortages of wheat for the bread-eaters that do not include me because I am a muhogo-karo-banana eater and milk drinker, fertilizers, petrol, gas, etc. Again, here, we confront the struggle between the two lines: the revolutionary, patriotic line of the truth and seriousness on the one hand and the reactionary line of populism, cheap popularity and lack of realism of: prices-control by Government, subsidies, tax cuts on the other hand. Although this is not as serious as the pandemic, the choices here, are also with serious implications. It is a choice between okubandama (collapse) of the economy on the one hand or survival (kwetaasa, kuhonoka). The real medicine for high prices and shortages, is increased production. Produce more, if you can.

In 1986, as we were beginning to deal with the catastrophic situation of shortages that had characterized Uganda for 14 years, starting with the 1972 mistake of Idi Amin expelling our Asian business people, there was talk by some of price and rent control. In one Cabinet meeting, we were informed of an Indian known as Gandesha that owned many buildings in Kampala and was charging exorbitant rents. Some were saying that we should invoke the Rent Control Act and the Government should set the rent levels itself. After careful analysis, we rejected that logic. The solution we adopted, was letting rent-levels remaining high for that time. This would attract many people to invest in housing. It is that flooding into housing, that would solve the problem of high rents by making rentable buildings many. That is how the huge growth of buildings in the Kampala – Entebbe – Wakiso – Mukono area, was triggered. Within a year or two, I started hearing of there being so many houses for rent, that many of them had no People to rent them.

Shaku shaku: Shambagira (riddle). Nyabweengye, n’obweengyebwe (Each wise person has got his own smart solutions to problems). What is the answer to the riddle? N’enkoko, kuchuutsya, etaine mabeere. It is the hen bringing up its chicks, when it has no breasts to feed them.

Now, coming to the issue of high commodity prices of: petrol, diesel, sugar, salt, bar soap, powder soap, cooking oil etc., we have to remember the nature of the challenge: Kubandama (collapse) or survive (kuhonoka). As already pointed out above, the problem of high commodity prices is not as dangerous as the pandemic. However, if it is not handled correctly, it can lead to collapse. Yet, with patience and correct response, it will turn out to be an advantage for the country.

Straight away, a serious problem solver, would cluster the commodities with high prices into two clusters: the imported ones on the one hand and the locally produced ones on the other hand. Some of the ideas people think about when confronted with high commodity prices, are the idea of subsidy (Government okutu kwatirako) or removal of taxes by Government from those commodities. With imported commodities, this is a recipe for disaster. It will lead to collapse. Why? Let us take the example of petrol. A litre of petrol before the rise of prices in November 2021, was Ugx. 4,590 which meant USD 1.3 at that time. A litre of petrol is now Ugx. 5,500 which means USD 1.48. This is all with the tax. The more expensive litre of petrol (ey’obuseere), is doing two bad things: emptying the pockets of the consumers, but also emptying our national dollar reserves. We now have USD 4.5 billions in our Reserves. These are enough to support imports for 4.2 months. If we subsidize or even just remove the taxes on imported commodities, the level of consumption will either remain the same, but this time each litre taking more dollars, or actually increase. The dollar drain will now increase per litre and also, worse, people may buy more of this expensive commodity. With the Great Lakes area, there is another problem – smuggling (magendo). When an item is cheaper in one country, eg. Uganda, there is a powerful incentive for smugglers to buy cheap in Uganda and sell expensively in the neighbouring country. Therefore, cheaper petrol in Uganda, would be cheaper for the Region. It would seriously encroach on our reserves. Moreover, the removal of taxes on some of the commodities, would mean tax loss to Government of: Ugx. 1.53 trillion for petroleum, Ugx. 1.15 trillion for diesel, Ugx. 520 billion for wheat. How, then, do we fund our budget for – roads, electricity, schools, medicine, security, etc.? There are items we do not tax – eg. Medicine, raw materials, etc. It is, therefore, not true that we tax everything. The very crucial items, are not taxed. Therefore, removing taxes or subsidizing many of the imports is suicidal and a blunder.

In my head, I had sympathy for removing taxes on locally produced goods such as sugar, milk, cement, etc. because, if People buy more of them, it will be good – they would be buying more local goods. This was until I looked at the taxes to be lost. On sugar, we would lose Ugx.193 billion, on cement, Ugx.200 billion, mitayimbwa Ugx.120 billion. We could see that the route to tax cuts and subsidies, even for the locally produced goods, was not a wise one. What, then, is the wise way? The wise ways are, therefore, the following:

To use frugally these imported items (kukekereza, kwereembareemba) or kubyesonyiwa (get alternatives); To use our own raw-materials – such as sunflower oil and castor oil (enshoga-shoga) for soap as we wait for the expanded palm oil production which takes longer – sunflower takes only 4 months; for bread, we can use our banana and cassava flour for bread-making apart from eating the traditional foods; for many years now, I do not eat wheat bread nor rice; I eat our richer indigenous foods of akaro (millet), muhogo (cassava), empogora (bananas cooked in their skin), ebinyobwa (G-nuts), obushaza (peas), enyamay’ente (beef), etc.

Nearing 78 years of age in September, I am doing very well. I have no hesitation bearing testimony for our much better indigenous food. Millet is the only cereal in nature that has got protein, carbohydrates and iron. I had also read something comparable for sorghum. However, for the indigenous sorghum, there was the problem of some bitterness. However, with bio-technology by our researchers, the bitterness can be removed. We, the Ntungamoists, the only advantage we found in bread was convenience in storing and transporting.

This is what Dr. Muranga in Nyaruziinga, in Bushenyi, is going to solve with the banana flour and cassava flour which is much healthier than wheat flour that has got the problem of dry glutin which is 9.9% and, therefore, is not good for the human body. The ministry of agriculture is going to guide you as to how our farmers can up-scale the production of sun-flower and castor oil seeds for vegetable oil for soap making as well as bananas and cassava for flour for bread. Sun-flower takes just 4 months and castor oil seeds (enshoga-shoga), take between 140– 180 days to produce pods. With Palm oil, I hear that Indonesia and Malaysia have banned the export of that item and, therefore, removing the tax will not change anything.

This leaves the problem of petrol and diesel, products for which we do not have an easy local replacement until our own oil comes on stream in, 2025 with first production and the refinery expected in 2026 and we refine some of it for the final products. Even before the War in Ukraine, the price of fuel was going up, on account of the worry by the fossil fuels producers of the global movement for clean energy (solar, wind, nuclear, geo-thermal, hydro-power, hydrogen, etc.). On account of that fear, the petroleum companies were, apparently, no longer exploring for new reserves. Yet, the new clean energies, would take time to be available. The Russian-Ukrainian war, has made it worse. Just before the Ukrainian war, the price of crude was USD 80 per barrel. It is now USD 114 per barrel. Therefore, the Ukrainian war, has added another USD 34 per barrel. Of course, this is an artificial addition caused by the countries of the Global North (the Bazungu) mishandling their bilateral relations and also mishandling global affairs as well. We are quietly engaging these actors to see how these actors can remove this artificial burden from the World. Nevertheless, this artificial distortion, should not divert us from our long-distance journey of achieving social-economic transformation because that is the only way of not only increasing our affluence but also immunizing ourselves against the mistakes of others.

Inspite of being obstructed by some elements within Uganda that many times delay our programmes, the way we have been able to transcend the recent challenges of locusts, rising Lake Waters etc., shows that we are moving towards that state of immunity from the mistakes of others. Even with the high commodity prices, we are still doing much better than many countries in the World. Our inflation has risen from 2.7% before the artificial crisis to 4.9% now. Compare this with other countries: UK 9%, USA 8.3%, France 4.8%, Germany 7.4%, Italy 6%, Spain 8.3%, Russia 17.8%, China 2.1%, Kenya 6.47%, Tanzania 3.8%, Rwanda 10.5% and Ghana 23.6%.

If it was not for the endless obstructions to our programmes, eg. The Palm Oil project in Buvuma, Sango Bay – we would even be much better off. With our coming Oil, Uganda will be immune to the external disruptions. Working with our African brothers, Uganda and Africa will be prosperous irrespective of the actions of the mistake makers, short of using nuclear weapons among themselves which may affect the whole World. Let us, therefore, not be diverted. We are self-sufficient in food (maize, bananas, cassava, milk, beef, Irish potatoes, beans, peas, fruits, etc.). This is one of the most important factors for survival in times of peril like these. We have good infrastructure, we have a strong Army for guaranteeing peace and we are beginning to pay our scientists well. Nothing can stop us from growing if we work with our African brothers and sisters and other people of good will.

Actually, in my opinion, the only, really serious, vulnerabilities for Uganda, are two: continuing to depend so much on rain-fed agriculture and the damage to our incomparably good environment by encroaching on the wetlands (ebisharara, ebitoogo), Lake Shores (emyegyeego), river banks (enkuungu), forests and steep gradient mountain cliffs (ensa). I have agreed with both the Ministries of Agriculture on enhanced irrigation and with the Ministry of Environment on restoring our wetlands by promoting fish-farming on the edges (emiiga) instead of drying them with swamp rice growing, restoring the forests, etc. We should even agree with the Coastal Countries (Kenya and Tanzania) on, possibly, using nuclear energy to desalinate sea-water as an insurance in the face of the erraticness of the rain caused by the sabotage by the mistakes of global mistake-makers.

In conclusion, I repeat that the only, really, serious dangers to our future are: reliance on only rain-fed agriculture; damage to our environment; and a nuclear-war among the mistake-makers.

During the State of the Nation Address on the 7th of June, 2022, I will touch on the issue of the so called “coffee deal” that was being discussed in Parliament that other day. I could see fundamental disorientation in the position of some of the speakers that were speaking in Parliament. Uganda, indeed Africa, being in a slave-relationship with external actors, is not comparable to any other factors.

To recapitulate (summarize), we need to know and do the following:

Subsidies for and removing taxes from imported products is definite suicide because it will deplete both the family savings and the National Reserves, leading to inability to pay for imports because foreigners beyond East Africa do not accept the Uganda shilling as a unit of exchange. They insist on the dollar, gold, etc.

The correct action is to kukekereza (being frugal) – kwereembareemba or kubyesonyiwa (get alternatives for the non-oil items).

With the internally produced commodities, I was tempted to look at removing taxes because, with these, increased consumption would favour Uganda. However, the tax loss of Ugx. 193 billion for sugar, Ugx. 200 billion for cement, Ugx. 120 billion for mitayimbwa, would cripple our budget and the planned developments. Some of these challenges are temporary. We have been having the phenomenon of low commodity prices eg. formaize, etc. It is the continued development of the economy that will get us to the stability of a more integrated economy. Only a few months ago, I opened a new factory of industrial sugar in Kinyara. This is the sugar, that is used in Coca Cola as refined sugar, different from the raw-sugar for tea. It is also used for medicines like children’s syrups. Its opening, was helping us to tackle the issue of surplus sugar. There are plans to get petrol out of sugar. With that phenomenon of a more integrated economy, the instability of ekyengera with low prices today and, then, ebula with high prices tomorrow, will be tamed.

With petrol, diesel and paraffin, the artificial crisis of the Bazungu has added another $34 dollars. We are engaging the involved actors on this. When we succeed here, we shall remain with original reason of the fossil fuels being worried about the clean energy sources. That will be much better than where we are now. It is important for Ugandans to know that even when we get our own petroleum, we cannot sell it below the World prices minus transport costs.

I thank you everybody for listening.

‘I will not die prematurely’ — Joburg mayor Phalatse on fears she may be next

Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse said she has heard of fears that she will be next after the successive deaths of her three predecessors.

Speaking at the funeral of her predecessor Mpho Moerane, who died on Wednesday of injuries sustained in a car accident, Phalatse said if statistics were anything to go by, there were fears she could be the next mayor to die.

But she added, to audible gasps from the mourners, she did not plan to die prematurely.

In under a year, the city has lost three mayors — two of whom perished in car accidents.

Geoff Makhubo died in July last year, soon after his election and his successor, Jolidee Matongo died in a car accident in September.

Moerane, who was mayor between October and November, died this week after being involved in a car accident last week.

Phalatse said the deaths of the mayors were scary and that those who know statistics would suggest she was next.

However, she said, “I would like to encourage everyone, that I will not die prematurely”.

Phalatse said she trusted that God will protect her.

She said she was warned “strongly” not to entertain this kind of thinking.

Gauteng premier David Makhura said the successive deaths were “unprecedented” and that nothing could have prepared the ANC to lose three of its mayors in a short space of ten months.

These fears have also found resonance in the ANC in the city and the province with many asking who is next.

This, as the ANC in the Johannesburg region gears towards its elective conference next weekend to choose who will lead the party in the city.

Among those elected would be a regional chairperson who, as tradition dictates, would be elected mayor should the ANC wrestle the power back from the DA-led coalition in the metropolitan municipality.

Moerane was expected to stand as a candidate for the chair position at the conference.

His slate will now have to pick another candidate to stand as chair. Times Live

Monica Musonda – The startup story of a real food pioneer in Africa looking to provide affordable nutrition to the mass market

Monica Musonda’s path to becoming an entrepreneur has been an interesting one. Born in Zambia, her education and training took her into a highly promising career as an international lawyer – she is a dual qualified English solicitor and Zambian advocate with over fifteen years post qualification experience. Her career took her into senior positions both in private practice (with Clifford Chance & Edward Nathan) and working as in house counsel at the International Finance Corporation in Washington DC. Her most recent corporate position, at Dangote Industries (Lagos, Nigeria) where she served as Director Legal and Corporate Affairs, was to be a key turning point. Monica was the project lead responsible for the Dangote Group’s $500m investment into Zambia to build the country’s largest cement plant, due to be completed in 2014.

“Love what you do. It is the only thing that will keep you going in your new business venture. If you don’t, you might give up at the very first failure encountered if things don’t go your way.”

Her rich experience working with one of Africa’s most successful entrepreneurs (Aliko Dangote), combined with the business lessons she learned, gave her the impetus to start her own business. In 2012, she moved back to Zambia and looked for market opportunities that could provide an entrepreneurial opening. She identified the country had a surplus of wheat flour, stimulating value add ideas for the use of this natural product and looking at new markets upon which to build a business. Her concept was to tap into the country’s need to provide affordable nutrition to the mass market by processing Zambia’s high quality wheat into affordable and nutritious pasta and instant noodles. The result was the establishment of her new company, Java Foods, of which she is Founder and CEO. The first processing plant to be commissioned by the company went live this year, in 2014.
“Be innovative. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and there is no substitute for hard work. Be open to new ideas, especially with marketing tools. Choose the best way to sell your business effectively and efficiently. Take advantage of social media as well.”
In addition to her entrepreneurial activity,

Monica also serves as a director on the Boards of the Bank of Zambia and Dangote Industries Zambia Limited. She is also the Chairperson of Kwacha Pension Trust Fund. She is a founding member of Jurispractice, an organisation that helps provide continuing legal education to lawyers in Zambia. In February 2013, the African Leadership Institute invited Monica to become an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Associate. She has won numerous awards and plaudits for her entrepreneurial activity in Zambia and beyond.

AfDB Board Approves $1.5 Billion Facility to Avert Food Crisis in Africa

The initiative will provide 20 million African smallholder farmers with certified seeds and will increase access to fertilizers and enable them to rapidly produce 38 million tons of food.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group’s board of directors announced that it approved a $1.5 billion facility to help African countries avert a looming food crisis in the continent.

In a statement issued by the bank on Friday, the bank said with the disruption of food supplies arising from the Russia-Ukraine war, Africa now faces a shortage of at least 30 million metric tons of food, especially wheat, maize, and soybeans mostly imported from both countries.

“The African Development Bank’s $1.5 billion African Emergency Food Production Facility is an unprecedented comprehensive initiative to support smallholder farmers in filling the food shortfall,” the bank’s statement read.

It said African farmers urgently need high-quality seeds and inputs before the planting season begins in May to immediately boost food supplies.

According to the statement, the initiative will provide 20 million African smallholder farmers with certified seeds and that it will increase access to agricultural fertilizers and enable them to rapidly produce 38 million tons of food.

“This is a $12 billion increase in food production in just two years,” the bank said.

Akinwumi Adesina, AfDB group president was quoted to have said: “Food aid cannot feed Africa. Africa does not need bowls in hand. Africa needs seeds in the ground, and mechanical harvesters to harvest bountiful food produced locally. Africa will feed itself with pride for there is no dignity in begging for food.”

He said the African Emergency Food Production Facility has benefited from stakeholder consultations, including those with fertilizer producers and separately with African Union agriculture and finance ministers earlier this month.

Mr Adesina explained that the ministers agreed to implement reforms to address the systemic hurdles that prevent modern input markets from performing effectively.

He said the price of wheat has soared in Africa by over 45 per cent since the war in Ukraine began.

“Fertilizer prices have gone up by 300%, and the continent faces a fertilizer shortage of 2 million metric tons. Many African countries have already seen price hikes in bread and other food items. If this deficit is not made up, food production in Africa will decline by at least 20% and the continent could lose over $11 billion in food production value, “the AfDB president said.

Potentials

The African Development Bank’s $1.5 billion package will lead to the production of 11 million tons of wheat; 18 million tons of maize; 6 million tons of rice; and 2.5 million tons of soybeans, the statement said.

It said the initiative will provide 20 million farmers with certified seeds, fertilizer, and extension services and that it will also support market growth and post-harvest management.

“The African Development Bank will provide fertilizer to smallholder farmers across Africa over the next four farming seasons, using its convening influence with major fertilizer manufacturers, loan guarantees, and other financial instruments,” the AfDB board said.

The statement highlighted that the facility will also create a platform to advocate for critical policy reforms to solve the structural issues that impede farmers from receiving modern inputs.

This, it said, includes strengthening national institutions and overseeing input markets and that the facility has a structure for working with multilateral development partners.

“This will ensure rapid alignment and implementation, enhanced reach, and effective impact. It will increase technical preparedness and responsiveness. In addition, it includes short, medium, and long-term measures to address both the urgent food crisis and the long-term sustainability and resilience of Africa’s food systems,” the bank said.

In her remarks, Beth Dunford, AfDB vice president for Agriculture, Human and Social Development, said: “The Africa Emergency Food Production Facility builds on lessons learned from the African Development Bank’s Feed Africa Response to the pandemic program.”

The program, she said, has provided a strategic roadmap to support Africa’s agriculture sector and safeguard food security against the pandemic’s impact.

Over the past three years, the AfDB said its Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation initiative has delivered heat-tolerant wheat varieties to 1.8 million farmers in seven countries, increasing wheat production by 2.7 million metric tons worth $840 million.

Long-term sustainability plan

The statement noted that a five-year ramp-up phase will follow the two-year African Emergency Food Production Facility, with the view to build on previous gains and strengthen self-sufficiency in wheat, maize, and other staple crops, as well as expand access to agricultural fertilizers.

It said the five-year phase will deliver seeds and inputs to 40 million farmers under the “Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation program”.

The statement said in April, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, appointed Mr Adesina to a select Steering Committee of the Global Crisis Response Group.

It noted that the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations recently invited Mr Adesina to make a presentation about the African Emergency Food Production Facility.

“The Global Alliance for Food Security spearheaded by the Government of Germany provides an excellent forum for the African Emergency Food Program Facility, which is part of a coordinated and collective effort by development partners and countries to accelerate food production in the short term while remaining focused on medium- and longer-term actions to build resilience.” the statement added.

Museveni’s First Son Muhoozi – Clear Signals of a Succession Plan in Uganda

ANALYSIS
By Richard Vokes and Sam Wilkins
On 8 March 2022, Ugandan politics was sent into a spin by 49 words tweeted by President Yoweri Museveni’s only son, Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The tweet announced Muhoozi’s retirement from the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), which he had formally served in since 1999. Since his most recent promotion in June 2021, he has served as the commander of the land forces. The position made him the third-highest ranking officer in the defence forces.

Muhoozi’s resignation would clear his legal path to formally enter electoral politics. Serving members of the armed forces are banned from political activity under Uganda’s constitution.

The tweet seemed to catch everyone by surprise, including senior security officials. They later put out a statement saying Muhoozi had not resigned.

While Muhoozi clarified hours later that his retirement would not come for eight years, the post fits a recent pattern that has fuelled growing public perception that he is declaring his political intentions.

The most stark example of this occurred weeks after the tweet. This was in the form of a nationwide series of public events to mark Muhoozi’s 48th birthday.

These included sports tournaments, public rallies, a party for supporters, and a state dinner. Public roads were shut for the events, and state-owned broadcasters aired some of them live. Rwandan President Paul Kagame attended the State Dinner.

At one of the birthday rallies held in the south-western town of Masaka on April 20, supporters wore T-shirts with slogans such as ‘Muhoozi K is our next president’ and ‘MK Project. Team Chairman. Secure Your Tomorrow.’

In subsequent tweets in early May, Muhoozi dropped any remaining reticence.

He later added:

At the state dinner, Museveni, who has always denied grooming his son to succeed him, made comments implying that his Muhoozi would soon be in charge.

Whether or not Muhoozi makes it to State House – and a great deal still stands in the way of this happening – it is undoubtedly clear that the possibility of replacing Museveni with his son has dramatically shifted from rumour to reality in recent months.

Heir apparent, apparently

Muhoozi was 11 years old when his father’s National Resistance Army took Uganda’s capital Kampala in 1986. In 1999, he formally joined the Ugandan defence forces while a student at the city’s Makerere University.

He has been subsequently trained at elite military academies in the UK and US, and continually promoted ahead of more experienced peers.

After Muhoozi’s most recent promotion to commander of the land forces, he has featured in a number of Uganda’s military deployments. These include those in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia where Uganda is part of the African Union peacekeeping force, and the Karamoja region in Uganda’s northeast.

Muhoozi’s fast-tracked rise into a position of power within the military has long produced accusations that he is being groomed by Museveni for succession. Yet, despite this ‘heir apparent’ accusation, Muhoozi’s public profile had previously remained relatively small. He is still perceived as something of ‘an unknown quantity’ among broad swathes of the Ugandan public.

He has rarely given interviews to traditional media outlets. For most of his adult life, the average citizen would probably not have known very much about him.

The reasons for this relatively subdued profile were related to the inner workings of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime that Museveni has led since 1986.

Museveni’s play book

At every point in his now 36 years at the helm, the president has maintained a posture of impending retirement. Museveni consistently suggests that the next election will be his last and that he dreams of the simple life of cattle keeping.

Being constantly about to step down in this way has allowed Museveni to play off the factions of the NRM against each other. He has dangled the possibility of succession before them.

In Uganda, this ploy has been referred to as the succession ‘queue’ within the ruling party.

In recent years, however, this act has worn thin.

This is mainly because Museveni has successfully marginalised several powerful National Resistance Movement figures who had developed partially autonomous political bases. They include former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya, former Parliamentary Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura, and most spectacularly former Prime Minister and Party Secretary General Amama Mbabazi.

The decline of these figures – all rumoured to be in the metaphorical ‘queue’ for the top job – has made even the most naive party elites incredulous to the idea that Museveni will ever hand over power to one of them.

Enter Muhoozi

This change has coincided with the political emergence of Muhoozi in recent years.

His public profile has been growing both domestically and internationally. As a presidential advisor on special operations, a post he was appointed to in 2017 alongside his military roles, Muhoozi has held summits with the leaders of Egypt, Kenya and Somalia.

He has also held regional engagements with Rwanda’s Kagame, whom he refers to as his ‘uncle’. Following a meeting between the two men in Kigali in January, Rwanda finally agreed to reopen its border with Uganda. It had been closed for three years following Kigali’s accusations that Uganda had been harbouring members of the opposition Rwandan National Congress.

The perception that Muhoozi’s intervention has been key in mending the frosty relationship between the two countries was reinforced by a further meeting, again in Kigali, in March. After this, Muhoozi and Kagame announced a broader bi-lateral agreement to stop supporting dissidents in each other’s countries.

Shortly afterwards, Rwandan opposition blogger, and former journalist, Robert Mukombozi, who had been living in Kampala, was pictured boarding a plane at Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport.

Muhoozi confirmed on Twitter that Mukombozi had been expelled, describing him as an “enemy of Rwanda and Uganda”. It was not clear where Mukombozi was going, although it was possibly to Australia, with which he has ties.

No longer a quiet figure in the background, the First Son has recently become vocal on social media about many aspects of Ugandan politics and its foreign affairs.

In many cases, his stances appear to have contradicted some of the official positions of the Ugandan government. These include his tweets in support of Tigrayan rebels in Ethiopia’s civil war, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in his invasion of Ukraine.

Alarming to many is not just the positions Muhoozi has taken, but the bombastic and egotistic tone of his discourse.

He frequently states that he will destroy Uganda’s enemies, and likens himself to military and revolutionary figures throughout history. These are discursive traits that have long been components of his father’s rhetoric.

Yet, across the country and online, multiple ‘Team MK’ or ‘MK 2026’ groups are popping up to support his future presidential run.

What’s coming?

The most likely explanation for Muhoozi’s recent emergence is that his once low profile is being raised to position him to succeed his father. If this is indeed the regime’s wish, it would be unwise to bet against it.

However, the pathway for Muhoozi to reach State House is far from guaranteed. The Ugandan public would expect him to win an election to legitimise his leadership, and in so doing he would potentially face 2021 candidate Bobi Wine in fierce competition for the nation’s increasingly young electorate.

ANECDOTAL HISTORY OF LUSAKA: Facts mixed with Myths

By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

Places of Note and interesting bits:

Some places we know differently now had other names. Lusaka’s Kamwala Secondary School used to be Prince Philip. David Kaunda Secondary Technical School was Hodson Technical College, Kabulonga Boys and Kabulonga Girls were Jean Rene and Gilbert Rene respectively. Chawama Compund used to be called Roberts, after a local European settler. An Italian called Marapodi used to run a brick kiln opposite the Independence Stadium. That is how that compound was named after him. Mandebvu is connected to Zimbabwean immigrants who lived there and kept beards (mandebvu) due to their religious practices. The spelling shows the Zimbabwe connections.

Burma Rd used to be called Market Rd and it was renamed in honour of local soldiers who fought on behalf of the british colonialists in Burma (now Myanmar). George Compound was a gift from George Hadjipetrou, an Englishman who actually died in 1995 aged 84 while his wife Yolanda died in August 2010 at the age of 93. Their daughter, Marianthy used to (or still does) run Andrew’s Motel.

So there was a large farm which made up what is now southern Lusaka, owned by a farmer John Laing, hence the compound by the same name. He lived there with his wife and family. He had general workers who lived on different parts of the farm, but his domestic workers lived in what is now known as “Kuku” compound or “Kwa Kuku”. (Not sure if the cook used to come from there). Along came a young man, John Howard, who married Mr Laing’s daughter. John Laing gave John Howard a part of his farm to manage, now known by his name as well. When Mr Laing died, in typical African tradition, his wife moved out of the house to live at a new site. The old home stead is now known as “Chibolya” compound, meaning abandoned place in Nyanja (we call such a place “Matongo” in Tonga). The new place where Mrs Laing moved to became known as “Kwa Mrs” or “Misisi” compound as we now know it. Before her death, the Mrs decided to give her faithful workers some of the land, this area is now known as “Chawama”, to acknowledge the good deed done.

Lusaka comes from the Soli headman Lusaaka the same way Kabulonga comes from Kabulongo village, a Soli village named after the reddish soil in the area. It was located around the place where Kabulonga Round About is today.

Meanwhile, Kabwata Clinic is built on the location of the original Katungu Bar.

Then there is the history which is now gone:

The first Disco in Lusaka was called Dust Bin and was at The Turf Club in Lusaka’s show grounds. The DJ was a Zimbabwean called Joe Pike.

PVC Disco was owned by a Lusaka businessman who also owned the first double decker buses in Lusaka if not Zambia, James Banda (no possible relation to Rupiah Banda?) Bob Samakai, Steven Ngoma and Eddie Manda were some of the crew members of the then popular mobile disco.

Malawian Eddie Manda well known as the ‘ Master Jam’ became the house DJ at Studio 22 owned by the Hickey Brothers Tony and Errol in Findeco House. Lusaka’s Studio 22 was somehow divided. From the lifts you walk in straight on the dance floor face to face with the DJ’s deck. On the right (Europe) you see a different class of revellers. Turning to the left (Africa) you notice a different crowd. It was never a racist division but disco lovers (Africa side) refered to it that way. One was free to go anywhere one wanted. Most black Zambians felt more comfortable on the Africa side. When the 6pm curfew was imposed because of the rebel soldiers were sneaking into Zambia hunting for Zimbabwean freedom fighters, entrance to most disco houses was 6pm. At Lusaka’s Studio 22 and the Q-Stiques in Emmasdale revellers used to go in for the whole night (6 to 6). Studio 22 used to serve coffee or tea free on request. You could doze off on a chair without interference from the bouncers.

Mr Rooster in ZIMCO building ground floor owned by the Hickey brothers became a dealers meeting joint. Next to Mr Rooster was Mwaiseni stores which used to be known as Checkers Retail Store and was the only store in Lusaka with escalators.
At the corner of Katondo street and Freedom way was The Lagondola bar and night spot owned by former Bank of Zambia boss Mr Jere became a popular spot because of the teentime shows by The Cross Bones. (The spot now has an unfinished building). Mr Jere also owned another night spot in Makeni called Kilimanjaro Pleasure Resort. Mike Nyoni, Chris Chali and other Lusaka bands were regular performers at both night spots.

Directly across Freedom way from Lagondola was Stanley Bar. Just outside Stanley bar was the main station for transport to Kanyama compound.

Top floor of the Society House was Hanif Adams’ “Room at the Top night club” ( High Lites) which mysteriously caught on fire one early morning. After High Lites Night Club was burnt down, Hanif Adams, his staff and new Disco gear moved temporarily to the American Dome by the edge of the Lusaka Show grounds.

Indians in Lusaka came from Fort Jameson. Indian settlers in Fort Jameson were predominantly Muslim. They originated from
Gujarat and entered Chipata through East Africa at the behest of the BSAC.

Wagon Wheels was a popular bar and restaurant situated by the Lusaka International Airport turn-off later to be known as Patelo’s Chicken (I think).

Lusaka always had lots of bars and discos and night spots. Some these were:
The Il Bambino in Lusaka Hotel, Mens only Q inn and the Dog Box, Grand Bar, Corner Bar, The Fountain, Ansac Arms, Red Lion, Forum, Africa Bar, City Centre Restaurant, Kwacha Hotel Bar, Mont Matre Bar, Rockwood night Club in Lusaka west (which was owned by the Chelemu Brothers after they bought the farm house from the Vlahakis family), Rocky Gardens (which was popular for lovers), Ba George at Andrews Motel, Pick & Whistle and The Q Sticks. In Kamwala was Hoola Hoop Bar. Lusaka Hotel had a men’s only bar called The Dog Box. Entrance was through Cairo Road. Au Mont Blanc was a cafe next to the Lusaka Post Office. Of course we need to add the likes of Mumana, New Londe, Nkuzyeni, Masiye, etc. There was Woodpecker Inn (present location of Woodlands Mall), Fridays Corner, City club and many others. We cant talk of discos without mentioning Mooncity and Valentino’s. There was Lotus Inn Bar next to lottie House owned by the Late Fundafunda who also had ama tarven kwa George and Green Villa Nite Club in Lusaka West which featured Shalawambe before their eventual retirement placein the 90s…To name all the bars will be hard. Matero alone you have Africa 2000, Nsimbi Yanga, Kariba Bar etc Geoge Compund has the likes of Namwela Zanga (chibuku bar once owned by my best friend) etc. From 70s to date is long time but you can add yours me I end here.

Then there is the interesting history:

Carlton Cafe was in the Central Arcade and had a private ‘Whites only’ bar called the ‘Grill Room’. It became the Forum (Boxers Mess) when the late Lusaka lawyer Mr Folotiya took over the premises. Nearby was Carlton Bar which was popular with South Africans. In the alley behind the bar was a brothel.

Talking of brothels, in the 70’s/80;s Lusaka sex workers used to parade along The Great East Road right opposite the Lusaka show grounds before moving on to Addis Ababa. Stanley bar was popular with Zairean sex workers( Bandumba) in the evening till late. The sex workers used to line up outside for clients to take their pick.

Zambia’s late Zam-Rock icon Paul Ngozi owned a take away food shop in Kabwata called “Chibe Pakapaka” He lived in Chinika compound before moving to Libala stage 2 till his death. He owned a sleek blue Skyline car. His band was called the Scorpions and they jammed in Makeni at a bar called the Pelican.

Now for a fable or urban legend:
The ghost of Rosemary, a Lusaka waitress who was said to have died misteriously appeared in three different bars she had worked in. First appearance was at Tambalala bar owned by a Mr Kasanda along Kabwe road not far from Chingwere cemetery where she was supposed to have been buried. Second appearance was at the Independence bar in Emmarsdale owned by The Findlays. Third appearance was at Evening Bar in Matero owned by Saigar Daka where she was said to have kissed a man who lost all his teeth and lived to tell the story.

Add what you know of Lusaka and its history.
