No more peace negotiations with Ukraine – Putin

0

Russian President, Vladimir Putin on Monday, August 12, said there is no need for peace negotiations with Ukraine saying its neighbour aims to improve its position in future negotiations with its invasion into the Russian region of Kursk since last week.

“It appears that the enemy, with the support from their Western backers, is executing their directives, and the West is using Ukrainians as proxies in this conflict. It seems the opponent is aiming to strengthen their negotiating position for the future,” Putin said during an operational meeting with government officials in the capital Moscow.

“However, what kind of negotiations can we have with those who indiscriminately attack civilians and civilian infrastructure, or pose threats to nuclear power facilities? What is there to discuss with such parties?” he questioned.

Putin said that Kyiv’s invasion also aims to stop Moscow’s advance in eastern Ukraine, adding that the main task of the Russian forces is to drive out Ukrainian troops from its territory.

According to him, Russia’s offensive in the eastern part of Ukraine has increased by “one and a half times,” and the country’s military is advancing along the entire front line.

He went on to claim that another goal of Ukraine’s incursion is to “create discord and division” within Russian society, as well as to “undermine the unity and cohesion of the Russian people.”

“The losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are increasing dramatically, including among the most combat-ready units and divisions that the enemy is transferring to our border,” he said, adding that there has been a notable increase in the number of people signing contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry.

Last Tuesday, Russia said that Ukrainian troops, including tanks and armoured combat vehicles, attacked its military positions near two border settlements in the Kursk region.

Since then, Moscow has reported that it has been repelling incursions into the border region by Ukrainian forces, in addition to countering airstrikes launched at Kursk and surrounding regions.

On Aug. 7, Putin accused Kyiv of carrying out “large-scale provocation” and “indiscriminate shooting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later commented on the allegations, saying: “Russia brought the war to our land and should feel what it has done.”

Russia and Ukraine have also traded accusations after reports emerged late Sunday of a fire breaking out at a cooling tower of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Moscow has accused Ukraine of causing the fire by shelling the city of Enerhodar hosting the power plant, while Kyiv blamed Russia for starting the fire and using the plant to “blackmail Ukraine, all of Europe, and the world.”

WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS IN OUR ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION AGENDA – MUSOKOTWANE

Finance and National Planning Minister Dr SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE says the consistent flow of funds from the Treasury to other Ministries and Spending Agencies for developmental programmes and uninterrupted public service delivery, is a sign of policy effectiveness and consistency.

“Our policies have helped the economy to remain buoyant, despite energy and food security challenges,” Dr MUSOKOTWANE has said adding that despite the progress, significant challenges still remain, such as poverty and vulnerabilities escalated by the drought and electricity disruptions.

In a show of solidarity with the business sector, the Minister has pledged that the Government’s medium-term thrust will be to upscale private sector investments; particularly in agriculture and livestock development, tourism, manufacturing, mining, energy and the green economy. Furthermore, the Government will leverage on modern technology and prioritize social protection interventions to safeguard the most vulnerable, drive economic growth and build resilience.

And analysing the July 2024 budget performance in-tandem with the performance of the 8th National Development Plan, the Minister says substantial economic transformation progress has been achieved as seen by a more stable macroeconomic environment compared to some other countries in the African region; the free education policy; expanded bursary schemes; and regulatory reforms targeted at enhancing transparency in debt management, improving public procurement efficiencies and strengthening the Public Private Partnership framework.

“The consistent flow of funds from the Treasury to other Ministries and Spending Agencies for developmental programmes and uninterrupted public service delivery, is a sign of policy effectiveness and consistency,” says Dr MUSOKOTWANE, adding that “further to strengthening partnerships with local players, the Government aims to attract foreign direct investment to drive innovation, boost productivity, and generate sustainable jobs and ensure that the investments align with our national development goals and contribute to long-term prosperity.”

In July 2024, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning released K16.8 billion to finance developmental programmes and general public service delivery. Of the amount, K4.1 billion went to the public service wage bill, K4.3 billion was spent on debt service (domestic and external) and arrears, and K5.6 billion was released for transfers, subsidies and social benefits. We also released K1.8 billion for the implementation of various Government programmes and general operations, while K968.1 million was spent on capital expenditure.

PF govt left a better legacy  as compared to the legacy of the UPND govt so far after their 3 years in office- Edgar  Lungu

0

Edgar Chagwa Lungu shares …..
Fellow Citizens,

Today, the 12th August, marks exactly three years since Zambians from all walks of life came out in numbers to vote and consequently, the new dawn government under President Hichilema was voted into power and I gracefully handed over as a true democrat.

When I look back, I must say I am a proud Former President  because my PF government left a better legacy in general terms as compared to the the legacy of the UPND government so far after their three years in office. Despite the enormous challenges that my government encountered, we tried to manage and ensure that the cost of living and prices of basic commodities were low to moderate for our people as compared to the status quo now.

As you all may recall, at the time of my handover in August 2021, I left a 25 kg bag of mealie meal priced between K90 and K120. Today, a 25 kg bag of mealie meal costs between K340 and K460, depending on the place, the price of fuel was K17 but is now an unstable at K33.47. In 2021, I remember that a 50 kg bag of fertilizer was K600. Today, the same bag of fertilizer is costing K1,200. During my time, a 2 kg package of sugar was K45. Today, the same package of sugar is selling above K75. You can add more items and do a better comparison yourselves!

This year, l discovered that almost all essential commodities have not just become so expensive, but that our manufacturing sector has decided to start packaging many products into “Pamela” sizes (smaller sizes) because most ordinary Zambians cannot afford standard packages we left in 2021. This is more depressing and disappointing for those in power.

Today, I know that thousands of Zambians can no longer afford three meals in a day, something many took for granted during my time because we had bumper harvests and guaranteed food security. It pains me to learn that, this year, more than 6 million people are threatened with starvation while this government is celebrating three years in power. Nothing has been fixed!

In terms of electricity, you all know that my administration had put in place strategic and practical measures to end load shedding in Zambia and that we left the stage in August 2021 with energy assurance for households and the industry. Today, our people are witnessing the worst electricity crisis ever in the history of our country. A critical analysis reveals that our mining sector is not spared: our sovereign wealth and economic benefits extracted from our minerals has shrunk to poorer and lower figures in 2024 than it was three years ago.

Anywhere in the world, a good government advocates for public policies and strategies that seek and insure stable economic growth, inclusive development and affordable environment for all citizens than perpetuating massive poverty, economic inequality, citizen hardships, social misery and bankruptcy for the governed people. This is certainly shameful!

On this day, 12th August, exactly three years since UPND was voted into power, I call upon all Zambians to introspect honestly from where we were in August 2021 to where we are in all sectors of life. It is only then that, we will seriously pledge to redeem ourselves again sooner or later by restoring inclusive democratic rule, good governance, pro poor policies, respect for human rights and support for basic needs of our people in a legitimate and democratic manner.

Thank you, may God continue to bless and protect Zambia !

M’MEMBE REQUESTS HIGH COURT TO ISSUE WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS FOLLOWING INDEFINITE DETENTION ON BONDABLE CHARGE

M’MEMBE REQUESTS HIGH COURT TO ISSUE WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS FOLLOWING INDEFINITE DETENTION ON BONDABLE CHARGE

Lusaka… Monday, August 12, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) President Fred M’membe has requested the High Court to grant him leave to issue a Writ of Habeas Corpus.

The Writ would direct the Zambia Police Service to show cause why he should not be released immediately.

This follows his prolonged detention at Ibex Police Station in Lusaka on a charge of seditious practices.

This is in a matter between Fred M’membe and the Attorney General, under the Rules of the Supreme Court of England 1965, Articles 13 and 18 of the Constitution of Zambia Act, Chapter 1 of the Laws of Zambia as amended by Act No. 18 of 1996, and Section 33 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Chapter 88 of the Laws of Zambia.

Dr M’membe has asked the High Court to intervene in his prolonged detention without police bond and appearance in court on a bondable offence, through an application for leave to issue a Writ of Habeas Corpus.

The Opposition Leader stated that on the 23rd day of July 2024, the Zambia Police Service Headquarters issued a ‘Zambia Police Service Notice to the Employer’ summoning him to appear at the Westwood Police Station on the 26th day of July 2024, at 10:00 hours for what was termed as an interview.

Dr M’membe said he was out of the country at the time and informed the Zambia Police Service Headquarters of his unavailability.

He revealed that police acknowledged receipt and rescheduled the interview to the 8th of August 2024 at 10:00 hours and changed the location to Twin Palm Police Station.

He explained that when he reported at Twin Palm Police Station on the 8th of August 2024, he was arrested and detained at about 10:35 hours for the offence of seditious practices, for which, he believes, he should have been given a Police Bond.

Dr M’membe noted that despite fulfilling the conditions for the bond, he has been refused release.

He believes that his continued detention without being taken before a court beyond the time stipulated by law gravely violates his fundamental rights and jeopardizes his health.

The SP President feels that his detention is illegal, unlawful, and a contravention of his freedom as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

Dr M’membe prayed that the Court grant him leave to issue a Writ of Habeas Corpus, directing the respondents to show cause why he should not be released immediately

CONCERNS: DRC-ZAMBIA DOSSIER

●On the subject of transit, the DRC-Zambia Agreement commits the parties to facilitating, through their territory, the free transit of goods destined for a third country;

● The DRC’s Ministry of Foreign Trade would therefore like to make it clear that to date it has not been informed of any dispute in writing or through diplomatic channels and that it is prepared, if necessary, to examine any request made by the Zambian party bound by the Agreement, which also prohibits any retaliatory measures.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade of the Democratic Republic of Congo would like to inform the public about the temporary restriction measures concerning certain imported products, in particular beer and soft drinks, tiles and earthenware, lime, etc.

The Ministry would like to point out that imported juice is not affected by this measure, as it is neither a beer nor a
soft drink according to the classification in force.

1. The DRC has 9 borders and maintains good trade relations in accordance with the rules of the World Trade Organisation;

2. The DRC is also a member of several regional economic communities, including SADC, ECCAS and EAC, and has ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA)
agreements;

The DRC is also seeing a gradual revival of national industry, a factor in the creation of jobs and wealth for the Congolese people;

4. Respectful of duly ratified trade agreements, the DRC is increasingly noting a negative impact on its economy as a result of imported inflation, since the report by the Ministry of the National Economy reveals that certain imported products contribute to inflation (information note to the Council of Ministers of Friday 09 August 2024);

3. With particular regard to trade relations with the Republic of Zambia, there is a
Bilateral Trade Agreement signed on 06 August 2015 between our two Countries
and the mechanisms for both the protection of local industry and the settlement of
disputes are expressly set out therein;

6. Under the terms of Article 7 of the DRC-Zambia Agreement, “each contracting party may apply safeguard measures in respect of a product (…) on conditions that it causes or threatens to cause serious injury to the domestic industry producing like or directly competitive  products”;

7. Paragraph 3 of Article 7 of the Agreement states that “where safeguard measures are
applied to a product of the contracting party, the other party shall accord the same
treatment to all other imports of the same product from other countries”;

8. The DRC-Zambia agreement specifies that the full period of application of a safeguard
measure may not exceed 4 years (art.7 paragraph 5);

9. With regard to dumping, the DRC-Zambia Agreement specifies that each contracting
party may take anti-dumping measures and countervailing measures if it is found that
products from the other contracting party are being subsidised or sold at such a low price as to cause injury to the local industry of the importing country (article 6, paragraph 2);

10. Article 6 paragraph 5 of the said Agreement stipulates that the contracting party of the exporting territory (in this case Zambia) undertakes not to introduce retaliatory measures with the aim of increasing exports of other types of products to the territory of the other contracting party;

11. On the subject of transit, the DRC-Zambia Agreement commits the parties to facilitating, through their territory, the free transit of goods destined for a third country;

12. In the event of a dispute, Article 17 of the DRC-Zambia Agreement stipulates that the
aggrieved party shall inform the other party in writing, through diplomatic channels,
with a view to an amicable settlement. The party to whom the request is addressed is
required to acknowledge receipt within 30 days, and consultations are to be held within 90days on a mutually agreed date. After this period, the matter shall be referred to the Grand Joint Committee for decision (paragraph 5 of Article 17).

The DRC’s Ministry of Foreign Trade would therefore like to make it clear that to date it has not been informed of any dispute in writing or through diplomatic channels and that it is prepared, if
necessary, to examine any request made by the Zambian party bound by the Agreement, which also prohibits any retaliatory measures.

Consequently, the Congolese party is committed to respecting the content of the Agreement and, above all, its instruments for settling any disputes.

This is why a video-conference meeting was held with the Zambian side on the measures taken by the DRC, which referred to the closure of the borders as a measure not covered by the trade agreement between the two countries.

The two parties have agreed to meet again in the next few hours to examine the mechanism for settling disputes in such circumstances, in accordance with the provisions of the World
Trade Organisation Agreement and the Trade Agreement signed on 06- 08- 2015 between the DRC and Zambia.

The DRC’s Ministry of Foreign Trade would like to reassure the population that “the
salvation of the people is the supreme law”, as His Excellency Mr Félix Antoine TSHISEKEDI
TSHILOMBO, President of the Republic, Head of State, constantly reminds us.

Investrust Bank employees sue BOZ, others demanding redundancy packages

Investrust Bank employees sue BOZ, others demanding redundancy packages

FORMER employees of Investrust Bank, in liquidation, has sued the Bank of Zambia, Investigating Bank (in liquidation) and Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank in the Lusaka High Court, for declaring them redundant without being paid their redundancy package.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/oBgd3cqKBMApTwBe/?mibextid=oFDknk

Langham Mwanza and 154 others are seeking an order that the failing by the Central Bank and their former employer to declare them redundant without following legal procedures is illegal.

They want an order that the defendants fully disclose the value of the consideration paid by ZICB under the purchase agreement  considering that they are interested parties and the Investrust status as a public entity.

The employees want an order of declaration that the placing of Investrust Bank under compulsory liquidation, preceded by the purchase and assumption agreement with ZICB is unreasonable, unlawful and unjust.

Mwanza and his colleagues are seeking an injunction to prevent further actions by the defendants that may negatively affect their rights and interest.

On April 2, 2024, BoZ took possession of the Bank and declared it insolvent owing to the failure by stakeholders to meet its financial obligations.

A statement of affairs issued by the Bank had revealed that, the extent of insolvency was assessed to be K749.7 million, resulting in a capital deficiency of K853.7 million to satisfy the required minimum capital for a local bank.

Subsequently on July 17, 2024, the Bank of Zambia placed Investrust Bank under Liquidation and entered into a Purchase and Assumption (P&A) Transaction with a locally owned bank, Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank Limited (ZICB) in line with Section 73 of the Banking and Financial Services (Amendment) Act, 2020.

BoZ further stated that Calvin Habasonda Assistant Director Regulatory Policy, Licensing and Liquidations and Maibiba Mulala, Principal Examiner as joint liquidation managers of Investrust Bank.

In their statement of claim filed before the High Court, Mwanza and others said following  their appointment, the liquidators on July 18, 2024 collectively authored termination letters and declared them redundant.

The employees stated that Habasonda and Mulala indicated that they would communicate regarding the redundancy packages among other issues.

Mwanza and his colleagues said as part of the redudancy process the liquidators ought to have informed them the hem of their dues which was not done.

“The failure has resulted in significant financial and emotional distress to the plaintiffs,”they said.

“The action  of proceeding with the purchase  agreememt prior to making a decision to liquidate Investrust Bank is akin to” assets stipping” and confining all creditors including the plaintiffs that are looking forward to recieve their terminal dues from the liquidation process as liquidators seemingly do not have any assets of value.”

The 155 employees said BOZ’s decision to procees the purchase agreement was done in  bad faith as the same was done  without   consultation, notice, compesation for affected emplpyees.

They are further demanding an order that the
action by BoZ to transfer Investrust Bank’s  most valuable assets to ZICB effectively imply a merger between the two Banks and as such the employee’s liabilities should have been taken into account by ZICB.

Mwanza and others are further seeking an order that the defendants compensate them for loses and damages suffered as a result of the redundancies set in motion by the compulsory liquidation including but not limited to unpaid salaries , benefits and redundancy packages in accordance with the law.

12th AUGUST AND THE RENEWED HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

12th AUGUST AND THE RENEWED HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

By Joseph Lungu

Where would we have been today as a country and indeed a people if we didn’t decide to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND three years ago today?

12th August 2021 is somewhat another “independence day” from some form of “colonialism”, the difference only that this was by our own supposedly fellow citizens.

The Patriotic Front had become too powerful for the liking of the millions of Zambians. All you needed was to be a PF cadre to create your own freedoms, even if that meant breaking the law and trampling on other citizen’s rights.

So where would we be today?

1. Tribalism, regionalism, and cadreism would have been at its peak. You do not need to guess how a regionally unbalanced cabinet and every other senior position would have been. Thanks for the decision of 12th August, 2021, today we have a President who is singing Oneness and unity at every occasion. Every Province has representation in Cabinet and at every level of governance.

2. Prior to 12th August, 2021, graduating from a college or university as a teacher, nurse or any other profession meant the beginning of destitution as there was no assurance of a job unless you were heavily connected to someone powerful in PF. The decision of 12th August, 2021 has seen thousands of our young professionals deployed in the education, health, agriculture and security departments.

3. Prior to 12th August, 2021, dropping out of school, college or university due to financial constraints had become normal. Thanks to the decision of 12th August, Education from Primary to Secondary School is free, bursaries are no longer a preserve of the powerful, meal allowances are back, skills training is financed through CDF, sitting on the floor in class is no longer tolerated with more yet to come.

4. Prior to 12th August, 2021, the political space was strictly for the PF. You had to be powerful to trade in a market or to be free at a bus station. You needed to be careful with the colour of your attire or you would face the wrath of the commanders, especially if red was your preference. State functions and even funerals of dignitaries were strictly for the people in green.

5. Prior to 12th August, 2021, media Houses understood the implications of hosting non PF persons. As for HH, it was a risk for the media House and himself to feature on any program. Escapes through the roof, closing down of any non compliant media House were common practices. Thanks to the decision of 12th August, today even state media has space for the critics of government, closed media houses have been reopened, laws allowing free expression are given space.

I can go on to talk about salary increases, economic diplomacy, the impact of increased CDF and many more outcomes of the 12th August decision but suffice to say, while we have not yet attained the ultimate goal, we can look back with pride as we see a nation crawling out of despair into hope. Amidst the challenges we face, there is reason to believe that we are headed in the right direction.

We forge ahead with renewed hope of a brighter future.

DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 5): THREE YEARS ON; HICHILEMA’S CORRUPT, TRIBAL AND DICTATORIAL RULE- Fred M’membe

DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 5): THREE YEARS ON; HICHILEMA’S CORRUPT, TRIBAL AND DICTATORIAL RULE

Greetings once again from inside Twin Palm police station cells!

Today, the greater majority of our people across the length and breadth of this country are in frustration, sadness and regret at Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s election as president exactly three years ago.

Even many UPND members have repented and are saying he is not their perfect choice for president anymore. They find him hard to support owing to his excessive greed, hypocrisy, lies, arrogance, pomposity, puppetry and other unpatriotic tendencies.

Certainly, the dramatic upsurge in dictatorship, grand corruption, tribalism and other vices under Mr Hichilema and the UPND has left a deep dent on the unity and democracy of this nation. Like we keep saying, to those with objective and sincere intentions, it is clear that things are no longer the same any more. With Mr Hichilema at the helm of the political leadership of this nation, repression has returned with vengeance. The escalation of despotism is unbelievable. No wonder, public dissatisfaction is significantly greater. This regime has polarised the nation’s politics and crystallized them into a greater sense of hostility towards Mr Hichilema’s critics and political opponents. And Mr Hichilema is harnessing these divisions for his own end. This is the unfortunate situation we are in today and anyone seeing something different from this, is pretending, ignoring real facts and ultimately fooling themselves. The truth is, the nation is on tenterhooks.

It’s actually painful to witness this abrupt downgrade in the nation’s governance and democratic credentials since the re-introduction of the multi-party system in 1991. To see opposition politicians, private citizens and other critical voices abducted, tortured, humiliated, degraded and dehumanized through untold and unseen repression, and hardship without any tolerance and restraint from Mr Hichilema and his administration is highly offensive and unacceptable.

It is no longer a secret that Mr Hichilema has set this country on a risky path of destruction. The thoughtless manner in which this administration has been circumventing the law and abusing state institutions in an attempt to destroy political opponents is a clear testament of the criminal intentions of this administration. This government has literally incapacitated the rule of law and constitutional order in this country, and they are going about their daily business with impunity, without oversight or regard for the moral, political and economic effects of their actions. They have been blatant with their systematic destruction of state institutions with the single resolve of reigning with fear and terror. And my being in detention for five days today over a bondable cooked up charge confirms this standpoint. Mr Hichilema has rewritten the rulebook on constitutionalism, democracy, governance and the rule of law.

But all these draconian manoeuvres coupled with the high cost of living, hunger, high cost of fuel, loadshedding, unstable exchange rate, skyrocketing mealie meal prices and rampant shortages have made life unbearable for many. The citizens have resigned to fate. They’re hopeless and helpless. They’re pained and frustrated with this corrupt, tribal, incorrigible, manipulative and fraudulent regime. The people are bitterly disappointed! However, for Mr Hichilema and his league, it’s pretty much business as usual. They see nothing wrong with their repressive tendencies. This is a leadership that is seriously obsessed with power and accumulation, and remain distant to the hard-hitting reality facing the majority of citizens on the ground.

Under Mr Hichilema, a sober, unitary and visionary solution to the country’s present challenges remain a non-starter. The realistic chance of returning to real governance and democracy under this leadership keeps getting dimmer each day that passes. Evidently, they’re a bad sample of politicians a country must never wish for. And so, on this day marking Mr Hichilema and the UPND’s election in office, we pay honor and respect to the brave citizens of this nation who are enduring untold hardship and misery at the hands of these coward tribal crooks. We urge them to remain resilient and steadfast as we pledge justice, equity, dignity and respect under the socialist government.

Let’s do more together. Let’s bravely stand up to Mr Hichilema’s despotic adventures.

Bachepa sana! Zambia chalo chesu bonse. 2026 Aleya!

NUMSA, Africa’s largest trade union with over 300,000 members demands the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Fred M’membe by Zambian police

11 August 2024
Press statement

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) demands the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Fred M’membe, the President of the Socialist Party of Zambia. Dr. M’membe has been jailed by Zambian police and is being detained at the Twin Palm Police Station in Lusaka since the 8th of August. He has been arrested and charged with seditious practices and the charges are related to an article that was posted on his Facebook page, where he was exposing the corruption of the Zambian government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema. Almost a year ago, (9 August 2023), NUMSA issued a similar statement condemning the Zambian government for arresting Dr. M’membe on ‘trumped up charges’. He is clearly a victim of harassment by a paranoid, intolerant state.
Dr. M’membe is not the only politician who has been harassed by the Zambian state. Opposition leaders have reported cases of abduction and assault at the hands of police, including Mr Emmanuel Mwamba, who is the former Zambian Ambassador to South Africa and also a senior leader in the Zambia opposition party, the Patriotic Front, claimed he was abducted, arrested, physically assaulted by police, and detained for days, before being released.

According to a report by the BBC in May, Honourable Emmanuel Jay Banda, a member of the opposition, and a Member of Parliament was allegedly abducted and assaulted. Other leaders of the Socialist Party of Zambia and their families too have faced harassment and physical assault.

Dr. M’membe was refused bail and has spent the weekend in jail. The party has been consistently vocal about exposing the corruption in Hichilemas government. Dr. Cosmos Musumali the General Secretary of the Socialist Party says the party views the arrests as a form of ‘intimidation’ by the state but they will not be deterred. They say Dr Fred is in ‘high’ spirits despite the conditions he is facing.

Dr Fred M’membe is an advocate of the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court and High Court of Zambia. He is a member of the International Bar Association and sits on its taxes committee, a member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the Southern African Lawyers Association and the Law Association of Zambia. He is also a journalist who founded and edited The Post, a daily newspaper established in Zambia in 1990. He managed and edited it for 26 years until the government ruthlessly closed it in 2017. The newspaper had an office in Havana for eleven years.

NUMSA stands in solidarity with Dr. M’membe, the Socialist Party and the people of Zambia. We condemn the Zambian government for abusing its power and for silencing opposition parties. Intolerance of opposition politics is one of the hallmarks of an autocratic state.

NUMSA is warning the Zambian state that we are watching them and we have noted how the state is reacting with increased violence against opposition leaders, and dissenting voices.

2024 SUPPLEMENTARY BUDGET, EMBARRASSING, CONCEPTUALLY WRONG AND WITHOUT IMPACT- Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya

Lunte Member of Parliament Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya wrote:::::

2024 SUPPLEMENTARY BUDGET, EMBARRASSING, CONCEPTUALLY WRONG AND WITHOUT IMPACT.

Since my unfair suspension from the National Assembly of Zambia, for seven sitting days for raising a point of order, I have spent some time studying the 2024 Supplementary Estimates of Expenditure No. 1 of 2024.

I have found that this is one of the most embarrassing and conceptually wrong documents that the UPND government has produced and caused it’s approval by the National Assembly since they formed government in 2021.

Why do I think it’s embarrassing?

The UPND government sought an additional expenditure amounting to ZMW41,916,400,133.00 for the financial year ending 2024. Since Expenditure is equal to Income or vice versa, this implies that government had to source the same amount in additional revenue to achieve this level of expenditure.

But a closer look at the summary of revenues shows that government would only generate additional revenue of ZMW3,770,296,000.00 to support the above stated expenditure requirements. Additional revenue to be generated by government in the Supplementary Estimates stood at only 9% of the required expenditure. This means that 91% of that requirement was going to arise from sources other than additional revenue, such as borrowing and funds from donors. This is extremely embarrassing to the people of Zambia.

Government cannot show such levels of national inability as to depend on borrowing and donor support for 91% of its expenditure requirements. This is below par. This is should embarrass every Zambian.

The Supplementary Estimates which was presented to the National Assembly was conceptually wrong. I do not understand why the UPND government would present such a wrong document to the peoples house for approval. Under the summary of income, government present an amount of ZMW17,222,532,379.00 as Savings Declared Across Heads.

I see a lot of conceptual issues in this declaration. Here are the two or three of them;

(a) If this amount is arising from declared savings from the original budget, why has government included it for appropriation in the Supplementary Estimates when the amount was already appropriated in the original Estimates. Which law allows UPND to appropriate the same amount twice in one year? And such a significant amount for goodness sake.

(b) If the UPND really wanted this amount to appear in the Supplementary Estimates, why didn’t they remove it from the original Appropriation Act by amending it to ensure completeness of transactions. What UPND has done in this regard, reminds me of what we used to call single entry transactions – it’s incomplete!

(c) In the face of transparency and accountability, tell me how the UPND can make declared saving of ZMW17.2BN without producing a schedule showing exactly which heads have been affected in coming up with those savings? This might be a scheme for something more than savings declarations. And time is certainly going to tell.

My conclusion on this matter is that this Supplementary Estimate No. 1 of 2024 is grossly overstated by the illegally double counted declared saving. I wonder whether this was deliberate or not. In an institution where there are accountants and economists, such a misstatement is unacceptable.

Zambia is at its worst ever in terms of accountability and transparency – but if we listen to each other, we can reclaim it to what accountable and transparent it used to be.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

Davido to tackle youth unemployment in Nigeria with his ride-hailing service

0

In 2011, Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke, broke into the music scene. Since then, he has established himself as one of the best Afrobeats singers in Africa and beyond. His songs have topped music charts in Nigeria, the UK, and the USA.

With four studio albums, Davido has performed in some of the world’s famed venues like New York’s Irving Plaza, and appeared on high-rating TV shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. On social media, particularly TikTok and Instagram, he amassed an impressive 30 million followers.

His growth was propelled by the rising influence of the music genre, Afrobeats, which hails from West Africa and is very popular among Nigerian and Ghanaian artists. The genre is a mixture of jazz, driving drums, reggae, pop, and hip-hop.

“I can remember when it wasn’t cool to be from Africa—people would lie and say they were Jamaican,” Davido told Forbes. “Now we have our own Billboard charts in the US and UK—that shows how serious the Western world is taking our music.”

Today, the Nigerian singer wants to expand his influence beyond music and venture into transportation. He wants to establish a ride-hailing service in a bid to empower the youth in Nigeria.

He is teaming up with CIG Motors, the African promoter of Chinese automobile company GAC Motors, to provide vehicles to licensed drivers, establishing a new ride-hailing service in Nigeria.

The effort addresses rising unemployment and economic distress in Nigeria and it also fits his approach of using his brand for social good while growing his business and music.

“I own GAC cars. I bought the utility vehicles in the past. I already know there’s a brand that’s durable and strong. We’re planning to do a Davido-Uber kind of thing. Give the cars out to the young people that don’t have jobs. Obviously, they’re licensed drivers. They’re responsible. They can get jobs. They can get paid,” he explained to Forbes Africa and CNBC Africa.

According to Forbes Africa, the vehicles, branded with Davido’s signature style, are expected to be ready in a month or two.

Meanwhile, the Afrobeats singer said venturing into entrepreneurship was not going to take his attention away from his music career.

“Shout-out to my brother Chris [Brown], we have a lot of songs together now. Joint album maybe next year sometime. I’m going to drop songs anytime this year. Maybe after that one then,” he hinted.

Abebe Bikila: The Story Of The African Who Won An Olympic Gold Medal Barefoot

0

Abebe Bikila was the first African to win an Olympic gold medal while running barefoot in the 1960 Rome marathon.

With his marathon triumph in the 1960 Olympics, Abebe became the first black athlete representing an African country to win an Olympic gold medal.

Abebe was born in the Ethiopian village of Jato in 1932. As a young man, he relocated to the nation’s capital, Addis Ababa, and enlisted in the Imperial Guard, receiving the esteemed responsibility of guarding Emperor Haile Selassie.

This is where his passion for sports began, and it was here that Swedish coach Onni Niskanen—who had worked for the Ethiopian government as an army trainer—saw his physical prowess.

Not many thought Bikila was Ethiopia’s finest runner; instead, teammate Wami Biratu was picked for the Rome Games, but Biratu became sick a few days before they left and had to stay behind.

During his Olympic debut, Bikila ran barefoot through the Italian capital, an occasion made even more atmospheric by being the first Olympic marathon run at night, crossing the line in what was then the world-best time of 2:15:16.2.

His triumph in 1960 was significant even outside of his country. Bikila competed in 13 marathons between 1960 and 1966, winning twelve of them.

Abebe Bikila’s sole defeat occurred in the Boston Marathon in 1963, where he placed fifth.

Nevertheless, he disproved his critics in 1964 by becoming the first individual to win the event’s gold medals back-to-back in Tokyo.

He however had to withdraw from the 1968 Olympic marathon at the 17-kilometer mark because of leg injuries.

Following his first Olympic victory, Bikila came home, and the Kenyan Nation Newspaper wrote that:

“In addition to giving him a new Volkswagen Beetle and a house, Emperor Haile Selassie bestowed upon him the Star of Ethiopia and elevated him to the rank of corporal.”

It was at this time that disaster befell him, precisely five years following his second Olympic triumph.

Bikila was said to have been engaged in an automobile accident in March 1969, when he was driving his Volkswagen Beetle, which left him paraplegic from the neck down.

Abebe sadly had spinal cord injuries and a fractured neck, which left him confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his days.

Interestingly, Bikila was able to regain control over his hands and went to other sports events, becoming a skilled table tennis and archer, and even took part in an early-stage Paralympic competition, the Stoke Mandeville Games, held in London in 1970.

The following year, he participated in a competition for impaired athletes in Norway, where he won the cross-country sleigh-riding event.

Even though Bikila passed away in 1973 at the young age of 41 from a brain hemorrhage, he is still well-known in the sports world.

A national day of mourning was proclaimed by Emperor Haile Selassie, and Bikila was accorded a state burial.

Abebe’s name is associated with numerous schools, honors, and an Addis Ababa stadium.

His greatest contribution to the sport of long-distance running in East Africa has been to inspire a new generation of runners.

Abebe Bikila’s victory in Rome served as a model for generations of African runners, especially those from East Africa, who took up his cause in the decades that followed.

Consequently, several sportsmen from Ethiopia and Kenya, including Haile Gebrselassie and Eliud Kipchoge, have gone on to become the dominant figures in their respective sports.

Fareed Zakaria has said the Kamala Harris presidential campaign is deliberately empty of substance and high on feelings

0

CNN host and Washington Post writer, Fareed Zakaria has said the Kamala Harris presidential campaign is deliberately empty of substance and high on feelings and the Vice President and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are winning by leading a highly emotion-based, “vibes”-heavy campaign against Donald Trump.

“Voters choose from the gut and then rationalise their choice, consciously or not,” Zakaria wrote in an Op-ed published Saturday, August 10.

“Kamala Harris’s campaign seems premised on this latter, intuition-based approach.”

Harris’s campaign is giving Trump a serious challenge in swing states, according to recent polling that shows her topping Trump in 3 key battleground states. On Thursday, Trump did a fully charged press conference saying Harris cannot do a press conference like him as she is bereft of ideas or policies.

“Harris has run a remarkably focused and disciplined campaign, one that seems deliberately light on substance and high on feelings,” Zakaria wrote.

“Harris has not yet given extensive interviews or done news conferences which would force her to detail her positions on specific issues. Instead, she introduced herself to the American people in entirely human terms, presenting herself as a dynamic, warm, funny, and optimistic person,” he continued. “It’s heavy on vibes, and, so far, it seems to be working.”

Zakaria then praised the importance of Harris choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, whom he said would have been the “practical choice.”

“Instead, she chose the governor of a bluer state — but one who projects an image that has resonated throughout the country: a folksy, affable, kindhearted man,” he wrote. “The Tim Walz pick reminds us that, sometimes, EQ is as important as IQ.”

The columnist argued that former President Trump and the Republican Party have long been “masters of the politics of emotion,” but Harris’ campaign, which is centered on evoking “joy,” is winning the public relations battle.

“So far, the Harris approach has allowed her to right the sinking Democratic ship,” Zakaria wrote.

“To prevail, Harris will have to start filling in the substance of her campaign,” he added. “The Democrats’ biggest strength is the issue of abortion, and the vice president has been eloquent and effective on it. Their biggest weakness is immigration, which galvanizes Republicans and even some independents.”

Trump has said some of his campaign’s internal communications have been hacked and blamed the Iranian govt

0

Donald Trump has said some of his campaign’s internal communications have been hacked and blamed the Iranian government, citing past hostilities between himself and Iran.

The Republican party campaign released a statement shortly after news website Politico reported it had begun receiving emails in July from an anonymous source offering authentic documents from inside Trump’s operation, including a report about running mate JD Vance’s “potential vulnerabilities.”

"These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process," Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.

"The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House," Cheung said.

Late on Saturday night, Trump posted on his Truth Social app that Microsoft (MSFT.O), had just informed the campaign that Iran had hacked one of its websites. He cast blame on Iran, adding they were “only able to get publicly available information.” He did not elaborate further on the hack.

The Trump campaign referred to a Friday report from Microsoft researchers that said Iranian government-tied hackers tried breaking into the account of a “high-ranking official” on a U.S. presidential campaign in June.

The hackers had taken over an account belonging to a former political advisor and then used it to target the official, the report said.

Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York said in an email that “the Iranian government neither possesses nor harbors any intent or motive to interfere in the United States presidential election.”

"We do not accord any credence to such reports," it added in response to the Trump campaign's allegations.

On Friday, in response to Microsoft’s findings, Iran’s U.N. mission told Reuters its cyber capabilities were “defensive and proportionate to the threats it faces,” and that it had no plans to launch cyberattacks.

Trump had tense relations with Iran while in office. Under Trump, the United States killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and withdrew from a multilateral Iran nuclear deal.

Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. While there have been no suggestions that the suspect was linked to Iran, last month it was reported that the U.S. had intelligence about an Iranian plot against Trump. Iran has denied such charges.

ALEXANDER NKOSI EXPLAINS GRZ (ZCS/ZNS) ZAMBEEF CHIAWA FARM INVESTMENT

ALEXANDER NKOSI EXPLAINS GRZ (ZCS/ZNS) ZAMBEEF CHIAWA FARM INVESTMENT

By Alexander Nkosi

1. GOVERNMENT DIRECT INVESTMENT IN AGRICULTURE

Drawing lessons from South East Asian countries whose Governments actively participated in running some key industries, the Zambian Government has been directly involved in agriculture production through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Zambia National Service (ZNS) and Zambia Correctional Services (ZCS). The Patriotic Front led Government invested in/ revived Mununshi Banana Plantation, Kawambwa Tea Company, Kalene Fruit Factory, Eastern Fruit Company, and went as far as investing $16 million in acquiring 90% stake in Zambeef Products’ subsidiary Zampalm Limited in Mpika.

The New Dawn Government continued with these agriculture sector investments through expansion of agriculture projects under ZNS and ZCS. In 2022, ZCS acquired 700 hectares Mwomboshi farm. Other key investments by ZCS include: Nansanga farm in Serenje, Lubambala farm in Mpika, Chitwi farm in Luanshya, Chondwe farm in Ndola, Mukuyu farm in Kabwe and Mwembeshi farm in Chilanga. All these farms have a combined total of 39 centre pivots for irrigation. The acquisition of the Chiawa Zambeef farm has taken the total number of centre pivots to 72, with potential to add 17 more. This will greatly increase irrigated farmland and winter cropping and contribute to building national resilience to impacts of climate change. Note that ZCS is also exploring acquiring 2000 hectares Green farm in Luapula Province.

2. ABOUT THE CHIAWA FARM

This is an 8,658 hectares (21,394 acres) commercial and wildlife farm on the Zambezi river within the Chaiwa Game Management Area which borders the Lower Zambezi National Park. It was acquired by Zambeef in 2008 at a total cost of $6 million. By 2009, Zambeef invested a total of $16 million in expanding the farm, setting up irrigation infrastructure, storage facilities, offices, housing and buying agriculture equipment. It currently has a total of 33 centre pivots covering 2,158 hectares (5,332 acres) of irrigated farmland, double cropped with soya and winter wheat/ winter maize. Water rights from the Kafue and Zambezi rivers offer scope to expand the cropping area by adding 17 more centre pivots to take it to 50.

It is fully equipped with the latest machinery, in very good working condition. It has extensive housing and farm buildings including modern 10,000 metric tonnes grain storage and drier complex, workshops, weighbridge, machinery sheds, offices, staff housing, management housing, fish ponds, irrigation equipment and underground irrigation pipe lines. It also has good internal gravel roads and security fencing throughout.

In addition the farm has a large tract of 2,737 hectares (6,763 acres) natural bush land with a game corridor. This is an added bonus to the farm as it has huge potential for captive game breeding and residential/time share use, with easy and close access to both the Kafue river and the Zambezi river. The animals in the corridor are Elephants, Buffalos, Leopards, Kudus, Bushbucks, Duikers, Impalas, Bush pigs, Genets, Civits, Cervals, Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Porcupines and Badgers. There are several water holes for the animals and in the dry season these water holes are kept full and there is a stream on the western edge in the corridor. Hence, the farm also has huge tourism potential. Lastly the farm has a
private airstrip and is only 115 km from Lusaka by road.

3. ZAMBEEF INVESTMENTS

Zambeef embarked on a $100 million expansion programme of its Mpongwe Farm that includes setting up modern infrastructure. It was operationally expensive to have huge entreprises spread across the country, hence the decision to sell off some assets and expand its investment in Mpongwe. Some of the assets it has sold include: 90% stake in 20,238 hectares (3,864 hectares is under oil palm cultivation) Zampalm Ltd sold to the Zambian Government (IDC) at $16 million in 2018, a 2550 hectares Sinazongwe farm sold to Chenguang Biotech at $10 million in 2020 and now the an 8,658 hectares Chiawa farm sold to the Zambia Government at $13.5 million in 2024.

4. CONCLUSION

Iam a strong proponent of Government direct involvement in agriculture production through Zambia National Service and Zambia Correctional Services. These two have huge potential to significantly contribute to agriculture development with the right investment and business operational structure. A lot of operational costs under ZNS and ZCS are already covered by Government making them better placed to produce at a low costs and compete with giants in the region. All we need to do is to sub-contract a private firm to run the production and business management aspects of these investments to improve their commercial viability and ensure profitability.

Thank you.

ZAMBIA HAS NOT UNDERSTOOD THE STATE OF DRC…

…8 years ago, we were producing more copper than DRC. Today, they are producing three times more than us….

Guest Writer

It’s indeed important that you know DRC and appreciate its industry, its potential and its shortcomings. I am sure you are also conversant with the psych and spirit of the Congolese national, esp the intellectual or professional.

They are quite well-read on geopolitical strategic issues; they are quite nationalistic and they are quite proud. If we think that DRC will have a relationship with Zambia, in which we are the brain while they are the legs, probably we don’t understand our neighbor that well.

Look at what happened just a few years ago: FQM operated two mines on the border with Zambia: Lonshi which is 25 kilometers from old Bwana Mkubwa mine and Frontier which is just 1 kilometer from the Ndola-Mufulira Road (when driving to Muf, the plant looks like it’s in Zambia).

Both mines were sending concentrates to Zambia for processing. Katanga Governor, Moise Katumbi, suddenly barred FQM from any more export of the concentrates and both mines were subsequently nationalized.

Today both are owned by Eurasian Resource Group  (ERG) of Kazakhstan, one of the largest mining groups in the world. Today, Frontier produces about 100,000 tonnes of copper per year; that’s much larger than any mine in Zambia’s [old] Copperbelt.

Why is ERG or  Frontier Mine important to mention? It’s important because ERG first came to this region to Zambia. They are the owners of Chambishi Metals, now on care and maintenance. I hope you remember what happened to Chambishi Metals? They were abruptly taken out of business when Finance Minister Margaret Mwankatwe imposed some unreasonable duty on import of concentrates from DRC.

They were treating concentrates from Boss Mining and Frontier to produce copper and cobalt here. Mwanakatwe was ill-advised and she blundered big time.

ECL realized this gaffe and replaced her with Bwalya Ng’andu, a more reasonable and exposed Minister, with mining experience (he was HRM in ZCCM). Hon Ng;andu quickly reversed the import restrictions and removed the duty. It was too little too late; DRC banned export of concentrates to Zambia. Instead, they decided to produce in DRC using solvent extraction and export some concentrates to China.

The next mining house worth mentioning is Jinchuan of China. They are the owners of Metorex Chibuluma Mine of Kalulushi, now on care and maintenance. Jinchaun is big in DRC. They own the giant Kinsenda Mine and the Ruashi copper-cobalt complex. They own two other outfits at Dilala and Lubembe. Jinchaun is one of the largest producers of copper and cobalt in DRC. They are a 100% Chinese company, with a presence in Johannesburg because the company they acquired, Metorex, has registration in RSA. In Zambia, Jinchan just owns a plot in Kalulushi and a mine that is closed.

Then comes Glencore, the Swiss-Canadian, mining giant. They owned Mopani, Nkana and Muf operations + a smelter. Here again, their model was to use as much of the extra capacity in  DRC to feed the Muf Smelter in Zambia.

Not understanding the game of mining, and probably listening to bad advice from quacks, Hon Mwankatwe blocked import of concentrates from DRC ending up causing immense problems at Muf Smelter. Mining challenges, due to depleted ore at Nkana, Mindola and Muf, made Mopani to start failing to produce adequate feed for the smelter.

The Minister did not understand that DRC was doing us a big favor by allowing export of concentrates to Zambia. DRC concentrates kept Zambian smelters running and sustained jobs. Concentrate is like maize, while a smelter is like a milling company. It’s the maize farmers that keep a milling running. What Hon Mwanakatwe inadvertently did was to shut farmers from supplying maize to the miller.

That blind move killed Mopani. When Bwalya Ng’andu decided to lift the ban on concentrate import from DRC; it was too little too late, DRC had found a way of treating copper without us. The Zambian operation became unattractive and unprofitable to Glencore.

They sold Mopani to GRZ at $1 and exited.

Today Mopani is on its knees; they are in debt to Glencore ($1.5 billion), they have no concentrates to feed the smelter and they have no working capital. That’s the cost you pay for ignorance and/or ignoring expert advice.

Meanwhile, Glencore is just about the largest mining house in DRC. They own majority stake in Katanga Mining, which runs the giant Kamoto Mining and the DRC Copper and Cobalt in Tilwezebe. They have a balance sheet as big as almost all the Zambian mines combined.

As can be seen above, ERG, Jinchuan Metorex and  Glencore were once major players in Zambia. They are no longer here. They are in DRC running big outfits and making big money selling copper and cobalt.

There may be no proper banking or insurance business in DRC, in your opinion, but still these giants are operating from there. According to you, they will be attracted to bring their cobalt to Zambia because it has better banks and insurance companies. By the way, which Zambian banks and insurers are you thinking about: Natsave and  ZSIC? These are toys that can neither manage to buy one mining shovel nor insure it.

The neo-apartheid sank (ABSA and Stannbic) and the neocolonial bank (Stanchart) are not Zambian banks. As you have seen, these are controlled banks are controlled from either JHB or Dubai. Here they just have some pageant as a PRO, but calling him or her the Managing Director.

These are just colonial habits to portray that we have Zambians in senior management, despite them not making any major decisions locally except to approve petty cash vouchers or any other little borrowings at the level of a staff car loan to purchase some reconditioned car from Japan.

I am not too sure we fully understand DRC. One of my friends was one of the project managers for the new Ndola Airport. I asked her what the feasibility study numbers looked like  in order to justify the business case for the new international airport. She told me they were looking at Ndola being the hub to service Zambian and DRC Copperbelt, meaning Lubumbashi and the wider Haut Katanga Province of DRC.

I bounced this argument off my Congolese friend. She laughed and reminded us that it looked like Zambians still have a problem understanding DRC. Lubumbashi has a larger and busier international airport, called Luano. Why would Congolese need to come to Ndola?

It’s even a pity that Zambia hasn’t been following progress in DRC. There are many feasibility studies and projects going on in DRC to create more mines, more factories, more farms and rehabilitate many transport routes.

Lubumbashi is connected to Lobito in Angola by air, rail and road. Major works are in progress to improve rail and road connection to Dilolo on the DRC/Angola border. The Benguela rail and highway from Dilolo to Bengueula are completely modernized. Export cargo will move from DRC without passing through Zambia.

According to my Congolese friend and former school mate, Zambia has been identified in their SWOT as a threat. Our policies are erratic and our bureaucrats, including immigration and customs, treat Congolese with disrespect and xenophobia.

On the eastern side, DRC is in the process of mending the rail, roads and modernizing their waterways. There is existing rail, which is operational in most parts, from Lubumbashi via Likasi-Kamina-Kabalo to the port of Kalemie on Lake Tanganyika. From there, wagons or trucks are carried by ferry across to Kigoma in Tanzania and then to Dar es Salaam via the Capital City, Dodoma, by fast rail or through the highway.

DRC has just joined the East Africa Community because of already existing cultural and economic links, including transport infrastructure like roads and rail. Surprisingly, Zambia is not aware of all those developments in DRC and we are still dreaming about Ndola being the hub.

My encouragement to Zambians is that we should always be reading and checking what goes on with our neighbors. DRC embarked on an ambitious economic recovery programme a decade ago.

Kinshansa is to be the agricultural zone for the country; Katanga the mining zone, while Bas-Congo is  to be the centre of cement manufacturing. There are a few facts or statistics that Zambians ought to know about our neighbors in before making claims about business, including:

1. DRC produces more food in their farms than Zambia does;
2. DRC has more manufacturing industries albeit has far larger manufacturing output or manufacturing value added (MVA) than Zambia. Kinshasa, Kisangani and Lubumbashi are major manufacturing towns
3. DRC is now a major manufacturer of cement in our region
4. DRC manufacturers sugar

5. Kishansa metropolitan has a population equal to Zambia’s a larger economy, measured by GDP, than Zambia’s
6. Kishansa, Kisangani and Lubumbashi are home to most of the manufacturing industry in DRC
7. DRC has more rail linkages than Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and Namibia combined
8. The economy of DRC is three times larger than Zambia’s

9. DRC mines, at 2.2 million in 2022, produced three times more copper than Zambia
10. DRC mines, at 120,000 tonnes in 2021, produced 60 times more copper than Zambia
11. DRC mines, at 850,000 ounces in 2021, produced 6 times more gold than Zambia

12. DRC currently produces over 25,000 barrels of crude oil per day in the coastal area in the Atlantic Ocean. New discoveries of oil (180 billion barrels) and gas (30 billion cubic meters) in the eastern DRC put the country only second to Angola in terms of oil reserves in Central and Southern Africa.

13. DRC produces over 14 million carats of diamond per year, mostly in the areas around Mbuji-Mayi.
14. DRC has proven reserves of lithium, the major mineral in battery exploration, amounting to 400 million tonnes at 1.65% grade, translating into 4.6 million tonnes of pure lithium. Please

15. DRC is also a major exporter of the 3Ts (Tin, Tungsten, Tantalum)
16. Despite having one of the most illiterate societies, DRC also boasts some of the most educated people in the world. The country has 29 public universities, 20 private universities and many colleges and academies. Congolese are generally very skilled as they learn crafts such as welding and carpentry vocational in secondary school. In general DRC has some of the most educated and qualified engineers, doctors and scientists in Africa.

17. DRC has more tourists than Zambia. Kinshansa is serviced by 13 international airlines. It has a larger and more modern airport than anything we have hre

Before dreaming to lecture DRC and think you can attract them to start manufacturing electric batteries in Zambia, it’s important to understand that country and begin to respect it. It will always help to plan in real time and realistic terms. It’s nice to dream, but a bit dangerous to hallucinate! Most of the talk about electric vehicle battery manufacturing in Zambia is actually hallucination. Congolese are richer, better exposed, better educated and more strategic. They are playing very calculated chess.

Exactly 8 years ago, we were producing more copper than DRC. Today, they are producing three times more than us.

THE ZAMBEEF $13.5M CHIAWA FARMGATE: how in the World can this one farm of Zambeef in Chiawa sell at 63% value of the entire Zambeef?- Miles  Sampa

0

THE ZAMBEEF $13.5M CHIAWA FARMGATE (part 2)

By Miles B. Sampa,
Matero MP & Patriotic Front President

August 11th, 2024

So we pick up from the earlier story of the Government of Zambia deciding to buy a farm in Chiawa from Zambeef at $13.5M so that our Zambia National Service-ZNS can cultivate the staple food Maize.

The idea of using ZNS for strategic food production and distribution is wonderful and I have no problem with it. To however ensure that ZNS does not fail on these strategic projects as they did during the UNIP era, the current UPND government should approach the venture somewhat different. They should get ZNS to instead partner with the private business community be it SMEs or Large Corporates to ensure the venture runs profitably. A 49-51% shareholding joint venture on each of their business project be it a farm would yield desired results in the short and long term.

My issue with the Zambeef farm is therefore not that Government is buying it for ZNS but how and why it’s buying it. Is it worth $13.5M? No it’s not. Here is why not..

1) Current Market Value of Zambeef
I googled this morning the LUSE stock page and showed me that the current market value of Zambeef is K 541 million. This figure divided by the current exchange rate of 25 means Zambeef value in US dollars is $21.5M . Not to forget this figure included all Zambeef farms countrywide ,they run chicken and pork processing plants, their shoes factory, their many retail outlets in all compounds etc.

So how in the World can this one farm of Zambeef in Chiawa sell at 63% value of the entire company? One farm becomes worth $13.5M (63%) of entire $21.5M value of entire company called Zambeef?
I can only state facts here and leave opinions to the readers judgement.

2) Someone argued that a farm can never be a wrong investment and that it always becomes profitable in the long run. That I am not a farmer and would never know. Incidentally my interest in the topic only comes in to the extent that the $13.5M being used to buy this farm is public money and I am paid to speak for the voiceless public where their money is not being used prudently. In any case I can confidently state that I have hardly seen any farm or farmer that has made profit from farming in Zambia. As a Banker back in the day we all rushed to Mr Costain Chilala to get him to bank with us because he was a successful farmer. Not sure can say the same about him today. He does not seem to have the farm wealth he was said to have had. Something happened. I struggle to mention any other Zambian name of a successful farmer. Until given one, farming remains a venture that is unprofitable and even as we invest $13.5M in a farm, may we be aware that it’s likely to be a sunk cost and not to give a profit into the Treasury. It may just break even. In the USA and Europe ,farmers make huge profit because their governments subsidize them heavily. In Zambia and Africa we don’t.

3) Then there is the issue of one or two Zambeef shareholders having one or two top government VVIPs as primary shareholders directly or indirectly. So they have influence on Zambeef operations but also have influence on government operations. It would therefore not be proper for government to spend $13.5M on Zambeef while they field government power and influence or at minimum publicly declare conflict of interest. As Zambeef is a listed company, all their records are found online and shows Africa Life Insurance as one of the Shareholders. It’s the same company that is linked to our Republican President HH . Nothing wrong with such investment and more so that he did so before he became the Head of State. Well now he is the Head of State and Incharge of our national treasury. He should therefore declare interest when the government or Ministry of Finance that he is Incharge of decides to buy a farm at $13.5M from a company (Zambeef) where he owns shares directly or indirectly as factually indicated above.

4) Then where are Government priorities to spend such huge amounts of money to the extent of $13.5M buying a farm when this money can be channeled towards the Cancer wards at UTH. Visited there recently and it’s in dire need of Radiation and Chemotherapy diagnostic and treatment machines. Thousands of Zambians across the Country are dying due to a broken medical system and this money is enough to make that single difference to our people’s health than throw it on a single farm whose productivity is not even guaranteed.

Conclusion: The British government that also has shares in Zambeef should be the one to bail it out or restructure its huge capital debt that falls due next few months. It should not be the Zambian government to spend money ($13.5M) it does not have to bail out Zambeef. Such money should be channeled to urgent priorities like into our hospitals in all districts Countrywide. The Zambian government’s role is not to be the business venture itself but to create polices that will enable SMEs and big companies be able to prosper so they create jobs.

A GRIM REIGN, ZAMBIA’S UPND’S GOVERNANCE UNVEILED AFTER THREE YEARS

A GRIM REIGN, ZAMBIA’S UPND’S GOVERNANCE UNVEILED AFTER THREE YEARS- Chanoda Ngwira

By Chanoda Ngwira F

In the wake of three tumultuous years under the UPND administration in Zambia, the once-promising landscape of hope and progress seems to have withered under the weight of broken promises and shattered dreams. President Hakainde Hichilema, who pledged to uphold the rule of law, now finds himself presiding over a nation embroiled in a serious crisis of governance. The endemic pattern of corruption allegations plaguing key ministries such as Mines, Energy, and Health has tarnished the very fabric of the government, eroding public trust and confidence in the leadership.

Moreover, the insidious specter of abuse of political power looms large over Zambia, casting a dark shadow on the principles of democracy and equality. Political opponents are vilified and ostracized, their rights trampled upon with impunity as if they were second-class citizens in their own country. The once-proud bedrock of multi-party democracy now lies in ruins, fractured by unprecedented divisions sowed by the very leaders who promised unity and progress.

With each passing day, it becomes increasingly apparent that there is little to celebrate about the tenure of the UPND in office. UPND cadres, emboldened by a culture of lawlessness and impunity, flout the rules without consequence, further fueling the flames of chaos and discord. Shockingly, the state’s complicity in this culture of impunity is underscored by the exorbitant compensation of UPND cadres purportedly unfairly arrested, amounting to a staggering 35 million Kwacha, a grim testament to the erosion of justice and fairness under the current administration.

As the economy languishes in intensive care and the fabric of national unity frays under the watch of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, the grand promises of prosperity and harmony ring hollow in the ears of disillusioned Zambians. The stark reality paints a bleak portrait of a nation adrift, held hostage by a leadership that has failed to deliver on its mandate and instead ushered in an era of decay and despair. The verdict is resounding and is that the UPND reign stands as an epitome of disappointment and disenchantment, casting a long shadow over the future of Zambia.

About the Congo border issues

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

I received a phone call about three weeks ago from a Congolese connect asking why the Zambian government had banned the Congolese from using Zambia as a transit point of their mealie meal imported from South Africa. The gentleman told me that Congolese were not allowed to move mealie that they themselves imported from SA because there were some Zambian entities doing the same.

Well knowing the sensitivity of the issue, I just ignored it and never contacted anyone in Zambia because some fights it’s better to stay away! Then also I had to verify that information with the relevant Zambian authorities which can sometimes prove to be an ungreatful exercise.

Then this week, I just read that the Congolese have also banned Zambian imports and have touched Zambia where it hurts most. The result is what we are seeing now at the borders which has led to the closure of the borders with Congo.

In 2013, I attended a conference at university of Lubumbashi. This was the period when then President Sata had just banned mealie meal exports into Congo. My paper was on economic diversification but when the question segment came, I was hammered from left, right and center on why Zambia was being cruel to Congo by denying them mealie meal. It had to take the Dean of the business school from Belgium to interject that I was not there  as a government official but as a researcher to present solely on economic diversification from mining😂. You could see that in the room I could be lynched anytime. The Congolese vowed to build their own farms and told me it was just a matter of time. They have actually made progress. If it’s in the cement industry, they have managed to actually almost replace Zambian cement.

Fast forward, some decisions we make here in Zambia don’t take into consideration their impacts on other countries. Imagine if Namibia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola also banned certain things we consume from moving through their countries. We would either starve or airlift as Kaunda did in the early stages after independence.

At this point am not accusing anyone of anything but as an academician with the little information I get trying to put the little pieces together.

Let’s sit down with Congo and resolve our issues. In fact in the future, we should hold talks with various Katanga regions about how we can plan for the next agricultural season. Congo should be in our food plans. It is what it is. Closing borders will make them find alternatives and in the future, that kasumbalesa that earns us money will be dead! When a neighbour is dependent on you, make them even more dependent by oversupplying them so that they don’t build their own manufacturing base! That’s capitalism guys! Comparative advantage issues!

Then also businessmen in the maize business let’s play fair because it seems you are in a fight with Congolese maize business people and it’s both Zambian and Congolese households and businesses suffering from your unknown greediness.

This is a piece of advise you should take. Don’t react badly. We have investments in Congo like Pedicle road which we depend on. Also we should not make  the Congolese population become hostile towards Zambians. Imagine a food shortage in Congo can easily be attributed to our bad behaviour and that will lead to only resentment.

So if it’s true what I have said, allow the Congolese to transit maize or whatever they want through Zambia and let the Congolese also allow Zambia to export whatever we want to Congo. We should also ask the Congolese to provide security to our truck drivers as a condition. It’s unfair that their drivers have it easy in Zambia and our drivers don’t have it easy there!

Talks should begin today. But businessmen should stay away.

Thanks

Farm-gate Scandal: Buying Zambeef Chiawa Farm, an Investment or Bail-out? – Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Farm-gate Scandal

Buying Zambeef Chiawa Farm, an Investment or Bail-out?

…the $13.5million scandal…

It appears the declaration of the national disaster and the respurces raised to combat it, is being used to loot the Treasury and impose extremely liberal policies as seen in the energy sector, decisions that would, under normal circumstances, require broad consultation and consensus.

Government has bought, without tender, budget or competitive process, the 8,000 hectares ZAMBEEF Chiawa Estate for $13.5 million.

Here are some troubling facts;

● Government has millions of hectares of fertile land most of it lying fallow.

● Government has set aside one million hectares of land across the country for farm block development but the development of infrastructure in farming blocks such as dams, bridges, roads and electricity, has been hampered because of lack of resources. But Government has chosen to buy a commercial farm at great cost.

● ZAMBEEF is currently troubled. British International Investment Plc ( formerly colonial Development Corporation and later Commonwealth Development Corporation), the UK development finance arm, invested $65million in Zambeef Products PLC securities in 2016 when the market value of the company was $59million. But now the company has a market capitalisation of £28million when the invested securities are due for maturity. BII has hired Lazard Inc. to help restructure and reschedule the debt.

● Government is using Zambia National Service and Zambia Correctional Service to buy the Zambeef Chiawa farm. There are orobably bigger and far better developed farms that are on sale that were not given similar opportunities bu Government.

● Among the investors of Zambeef is AfLife Financial Services. AfLife has investors that include President Hichilema’s long-time business partners; Mr. Muna Hantuba and Mr. Valentine Chitalu.

● We raised similar concerns when AfLife Financial Services were awarded to be fund Managers of the $40million Environmental Protection and Management Fund that has previously been housed at Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development.

● Similar decisions are troubling where multinationals are feasting on government resources. A mining firm, First Quantum Minerals (FQM), has been given a maize haulage contract to transport maize from Tanzania.

● Newgrowco Zambia Limited, a South African company registered in Zambia, has been given a $22million maize importation contract by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) without public competition, when government has already signed a government-to-government contract with the Union Republic of Tanzania to purchase 650,000 metric tonnes of maize worth US$225million.

Clearly the corruption under President Hichilema has quickly escalated to a deliberate and calculated utter plunder of national resources without restraint.

DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 4): WHO RULES MATTERS; WHEN A WICKED MAN RULES, PEOPLE MOURN- Fred M’membe

DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 4): WHO RULES MATTERS; WHEN A WICKED MAN RULES, PEOPLE MOURN

Greetings from inside Twin Palm police station cells!

There is a misconception amongst Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government that leadership and governance is all about praise singing, agreement and harmony. This is why some of us get into trouble for speaking the truth.

Mr Hichilema must realize that politics are about plurality and diversity. Even Christianity is not about united voicing Bible verses or speaking the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Division, not unity, is a significant theme in the Bible. For instance, Prophet Jeremiah, from the Old Testament, was persecuted for saying what God told him to speak to the people. Jeremiah was opposed for saying what people did not want to hear from God. It’s not just Jeremiah, many of the prophets of God in the Old Testament received reproach, ridicule, mocking, and even death for speaking up. Our Lord Jesus Christ was also persecuted for saying and doing what other religious leaders and people rejected.

As Christians, should we shut up or speak the truth about what is harmful to society? Should we let lies, gossip and manipulation to be more widespread than the truth? Jesus answered this when he warned his disciples that they should not fear persecution for speaking His words because they will prove true even if those offended by them reject them. Jesus and his words are meant for the good of others, even if they sting. Therefore, persecution, beatings, being placed in jail, or fed to lions will harm or kill your body, but it is God who saves your souls for heaven, not other people. We tend to fear others and things we cannot control, but God is to be feared above all else.

That said, it is important for Mr Hichilema and his league to understand that political happiness, national prosperity, growth and stability are directly connected to the nature and moral character of any nation’s leadership. In essence, every nation’s peace, justice, stability and good fortune entirely depends on the quality, category and spiritual outlook of the leadership they elect for themselves. If those elected into leadership are materialistic or nonspiritual, unmoved and cold-hearted then that nation is destined for disaster.

Let us also not forget that every leader is an echo of their spiritual life, belief and background. There is no person who reproduces what is not in the heart. And what is in the heart is a creation of one’s spiritual journey, belief and childhood. Therefore, human beings are a product of what lies deeper inside them, predominantly, the awareness, recognition or belief that there is a supernatural being (God) greater than myself. So, no matter how hard they try to disguise their narcissism, cruelty and wickedness; genuine and Godly leadership is not hard to discern, distinguish and respect. As the Bible says in Proverbs 29 v 2: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked man rules, the people mourn and lament.”

Clearly, the Bible instructs us that the one who rules matters! If that is the case, do the people ruling us today possess any noticeable traits of decency, justice or righteousness? Are citizens rejoicing or lamenting since their ascendency? It goes without saying that currently the nation craves for a God-fearing, truthful, kind, compassionate and virtuous leader. Of which, Mr Hichilema falls far short of these qualities.

May God help Zambia!

Zambia Police Service are no match for JJ Banda

0

GUEST ARTICLE: Zambia Police Service are no match for JJ

If the victorious history that fugitive Petauke Central member of parliament Emmanuel JJ Banda has against the Zambia Police is anything to go by, forget the men and women from Lilayi scoring any meaningful goals against him.

Borrowing a term from football vocabulary, JJ has a superior head-to-head record against the Zambia Police.

The former Petauke PF youth chairman has consistently outsmarted the Zambia Police Service, leaving them scrambling to keep up.

With a history of daring escapades, JJ has proven himself to be a formidable opponent, always staying one step ahead of the law.

In July of 2020, JJ orchestrated a brazen attack on Lusaka Central Police Station, leaving a trail of battered officers in his wake.

Escorted by his PF henchmen, JJ stormed into the Lusaka Central Police Station, slamming doors shut behind him and with a fierce determination, they rounded up every officer on duty, from the commissioner to the lowest-ranking personnel.

Then, in a stunning display of brute force, JJ’s men unleashed a merciless beating on the officers, beating the living daylight out of their Lilayi-trained bodies.

No one was spared – members of the feared C5 squad, anti-robbery unit, and even the Victim Support Unit all felt JJ’s wrath that day.

After exhausting his energy, JJ and company casually strolled out of the police station, having helped themselves to the officers’ phones, money, and other valuables.

Following the incident, JJ vanished into thin air, leaving behind a trail of battered and humiliated officers.

After composing themselves, police announced that they had launched a manhunt for JJ, vowing to charge him with aggravated robbery.

However, their efforts were in vain – JJ remained at large until he chose to surrender on August 19.

Surprisingly, JJ walked into the police station and was released a mere 20 minutes later by the same officers he had brutally beaten, some of whom still bore the physical scars of the encounter, including missing teeth – apparently on police bond.

The aftermath saw JJ facing a court of law, where he received a surprisingly lenient fine of K150 for the incident.

Four months prior to this incident, February 2020 to be specific, JJ had led a group of Lusaka Intertcity-based PF thugs in a violent disruption of a live broadcast of Bill 10 Constitutional Amendment debate at the Intercontinental Hotel, sending attendees fleeing in terror.

Yet, despite the overwhelming police presence, no officer could master the courage to arrest JJ or any of his criminal comrades.

And recently, JJ’s alleged abduction left the police baffled, only for him to reappear mysteriously.

Despite being in their custody for several weeks, the Zambia Police Service don’t seem to have gotten anything meaningful from him regarding the details of the abduction.

If they have, the Police have not communicated to the public.

Instead, the authorities have chosen to charge JJ with aggravated robbery for an eight-year-old incident which would ensure that he remains behind bars without bail.

But true to his form, JJ outsmarted his captors once again, escaping from Chipata General Hospital last Sunday despite being under guard by two armed police officers and three Zambia Correctional Service personnel.

Almost a week has passed since his daring escape, and JJ remains at large and now the Zambia Police Service are offering a K2 million reward for information leading to his capture and successful prosecution.

The Zambia Police Service should just give JJ his medal, they can’t keep up with him.

BY CHOSING A LIFE ON THE RUN,JJ Banda HAS EFFECTIVELY JAILED HIMSELF

Authored By Mupishi Jones

Living life on the run is undoubtedly a stressful experience, and fear becomes a constant companion for fugitives.

The fear of being caught, the fear of losing their freedom, and the fear of the unknown can have a profound impact on their mental well-being.

Such prolonged stress can lead to heightened anxiety, paranoia, and even the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Fugitives often have a heightened sense of anxiety and paranoia, constantly looking over their shoulder, and feeling a constant threat to their freedom. This fear can drive them to extreme measures, such as changing their appearance, using false identities, or seeking shelter in remote locations.

Sooner than later JJ Banda will realise that where he was whether in a hospital bed or in police holding cells, was far much better than where he’s hiding right now.
He’ll realise how important freedom is which he was enjoying where he was.

He may feel okay for the next few weeks or even a month or two in hiding, but after that he will come to terms with the complications and realities of life on the run or that of creating an environment of solitary confinement for himself.

He’ll come to realise that hiding from the law is very expensive because whatever he wants,he has to pay someone trustworthy to do it for him.

He’ll come to learn that there’s nothing more important than one’s freedom on this earth.

He’ll reach a point where any sound of a vehicle by the gate will be enough to trigger his adrenaline, any knock on the door will make him lose appetite no matter how hungry he was.His ears and eyes will always be tuned to hear strange sounds.

Very soon JJ will come to realise that his new fugitive life on the run is worse than being in police cells.
He’ll realise that what he thought he was running away to meet his freedom ,technically, he was sending himself to prison,a prison where he cannot move a few metres from his hiding room,a prison where he cannot talk or laugh loudly for fear of anyone. A prison where he’s not free to meet and talk to anyone for fear that he might be exposed.

What JJ must know is that the psychological effects of isolation continue long after he’ll freed from solitary, affecting society as a whole.

He’s basically in solitary confinement where he’d even be envying the freedom of movement of a zooming fly past his face or an ant crawling freely on the wall.

JJ was better off facing his charges whilst maintaining his freedom of meeting whoever he so desires including accessing his Lawyers without any fears.

When he’s fantasies and illusions will be over,JJ will come back to reality that he has effectively sentenced himself,

I submit

Our political cults, chaos and corruption make for a hungry and very poor country- Azwell Banda

Our political cults, chaos and corruption make for a hungry and very poor country

By Azwell Banda(The Mast)

Our capitalist rulers of the world are killing young and old people, women and children in Russia, Ukraine, Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Sudan, Libya, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Central African Republic, parts of Nigeria and in many other parts of the world.

In all these wars capitalist greed for profits is at the heart of the violent conflicts. In virtually all these wars, it is impossible to miss the now hidden and now open hand of the US and its Western allies. The governments and their oligarchs of the US and its Western NATO allies, now also joined by Australia, Japan and the Philippines are prepared for war with Russia, North Korea, Iran, and eventually China – India is precariously sitting on the fence – it continues to have border skirmishes with China and economic rivalries with both the US and its Western allies and China: India has become a superpower as it has simultaneously become the world’s most populous nation. At the heart of all the superpowers’ manoeuvres lies capitalist greed for profits now hell bent on causing a redivision of the world, among themselves, even if a nuclear world war may be inevitable.

The world capitalist economy had barely recovered from the tremors of the 2007/8 global financial crisis when the coronavirus pandemic exploded on the world, further sending into turmoil an already crisis ridden world capitalist economy. Falling rates of profits, global disruption of value chains, rising inflation, rising unemployment rates, high cost of living, social chaos including the rise of extreme right-wing politics and fascism and their inevitable racist, xenophobic, anti-immigrants, homophobic and similar social malaise have exploded in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and most of Europe, Israel, Argentine, Ukraine, Russia, India, Asia and just about in all capitalist countries of the world, including in Africa itself.

Well-meaning, progressive people all over the world including in the heartlands of the explosions of right-wing politics and fascism such as the US, UK, EU, Israel and India mass protests involving anti-fascist, anti-war and pro-peace movements have erupted involving hundreds of thousands of people. The Israeli genocide in Gaza has once again galvanised a world movement for peace and against war. US university student mass protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza have spread to the UK, Germany, France, Italy and other universities world-wide. The Palestinian cause for freedom, decolonisation and statehood has once again ignited the global movement against colonialism, capitalism and imperialism.

The world capitalist and imperialist system has no solutions to the economic and world crises it generates. It has no solutions to the crises of falling rates of profits, inflation, overproduction, underconsumption, unemployment and underemployment, the contradiction between the global explosion of advanced new forces of production existing side by side with prefeudal and feudal forces of production, global warming, climate change, ecological disasters, human caused epidemics and pandemics and the many social crises all these cause to the world’s peoples. Private ownership of the means of production as the main driver of profit accumulation long expired when trusts, oligopolies and monopolies kicked out the individual capitalist as the driver of the capitalist system, and led to imperialism, the parasitic and thoroughly decayed, war-mongering terminal version of capitalism. The nation state has become an obstacle, obsolete, to the development of both capitalism and the advancement of the world human population. Instead, the nation state is now the facilitator of the growth of the world’s war economy.

It is in this extremely troubled and dangerous world on the verge of the nuclear Third World War that Zambia, a neo-colonial contraption with a collapsed formal economy, over indebted, extremely weak state institutions, collapsed national building project now replaced by open tribalism, provincialism and regionalism as hunger, diseases, unemployment and extreme political, economic, and social inequalities explode is perilously toying with its elite politics of cults, massive government corruption as social chaos grows throughout the country.

Clearly inherited from colonialism and our “freedom fighters” especially Kenneth Kaunda, our elites and their politicians have perfected the political practice of manufacturing cults for presidents of their type of political parties and thus, the president of Zambia. Our Constitution gives so much executive power and authority to the president that our racist British colonisers would have the governors they deployed in Zambia refuse some of the executive powers and authority. For example, without parliament approval and accountability, the president of Zambia can cause to be removed from the courts matters of ownership involving large mines partly owned by ZCCM-IH and settled secretly, by offloading such mines to foreign capitalists.

The president of Zambia can secretly authorise the parcelling out to foreign interests large tracts of Zambian land, completely ignoring the need for public hearings and by-passing parliament, and the country would do nothing about this. The president of Zambia today decides who must be investigated, arrested and prosecuted by the law enforcement agents, especially among our political elites. He or she can weaken and cripple the opposition by, among other things, cutting the opposition and its supporters from government business, sowing divisions in the opposition by funding chaos in them, using the police, courts, prison and parliament to sort out the opposition, and without any protests in the country, openly violate the Constitution of Zambia by literally suspending constitutionally guaranteed political rights.

All this abuse of presidential power and authority is done in order that the president and his close friends accumulate massive wealth as they auction the country to foreign money. Corruption is the main means by which wealth is amassed, by our elites and their politicians. For this economic and political scheme of looting and plundering Zambia to succeed, “the president” must be transformed into a cult figure, a demigod. The transformation starts in the political party when in opposition. It must be understood that the need for a cult for a president arises also because all our political elites also either already are rich, or aspire to be rich; to join the looting and plundering class colonialism bequeathed to Zambia.

Our elites and their politicians are inheritors of the British colonial political system and its authoritarian, thoroughly undemocratic, lying, hypocritical one-man cultist culture and highly contemptuous of the average native who, at best is regarded as a child even when fully grown as an adult, or a moron and retard well beneath the “educated native” now in charge of government. They are thoroughly suspicious, untrusting, paranoid and extremely secretive in their political behaviour.

The leader of the political party owns it as a personal vehicle to contest for personal political power, for personal aggrandisement. Such a leader is happy to be surrounded by ingratiating, fawning absolutely “loyal” acolytes: descent of any kind is regarded as a sign of disloyalty and an “attack” on the leader. This is to be expected: the leader after all owns the political party. There is hardly any internal democracy and accountability in all our political parties. When in government, it is not surprising that the leader of a political party in power behaves as if they own Zambia.

We are living in the last days of the period of intra-class political competition for political power among our neo-colonial, pro-imperialist elites and their political parasites. The broad masses of Zambia, the employed and unemployed working class and their rural relatives are yet to enter upon the stage of history to claim their right to economic and political power: this explains why these are today extremely hungry, largely without work, very poor and suffer horrible economic, social and political inequalities. To our elites and their political parasites, these Zambian masses are useful only for votes after every five years. For example, those in the opposition have already actually started to practice how they will preach to the Zambian masses, should they win the 2026 elections “to wait for 2031, to vote for any party of their choice”!

Our inherited colonial economic and political system and its elites (sadly including the majority of the so-called intellectuals, academics and professionals) and political parasites have no solutions to our national problems. Not being anti-capitalist and therefore not anti-imperialist, our elites cannot be nationalists, actually. The solutions to our problems can only be found when power – economic and political – will shift from our elites and their political parasites to the majority of the people of Zambia who are young, largely unemployed and their poor rural relatives.

As an economic and political class, the cult politics, corruption and social chaos our elites and their economic parasites have unleashed on Zambia cannot be resolved by them: true Zambian politics and economic freedom will only begin when the broad Zambian masses start to reclaim their economic and political power from these elites and their parasites. Then, and only then, can Zambia embark on its road for genuine justice, equality, national healing, peace, freedom, democracy, development, prosperity, true love and therefore happiness.

Attacking rationality: Laura Miti’s response to Sishuwa

By Melicious Chongo(The Mast)

Laura Miti, an eminent Zambian figure, social and human rights activist, and Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, a highly sound academician and I must say a buff in his field, have recently been in the media, where they have engaged in what can be classified as highly volatile cold war between the two of them.

The dual obviously has a history together. I personally may never really come to know the whole genesis of their sharp public exchanges. But what I understand, at least from face value based on what the public is meant to believe, is that their sharp exchanges are emanating from the ACC debacle.

One ACC board member, Dr O’brian Kaaba, had made quite damming revelations about grand corruption going on within and perpetrated by the very state chambers and individuals that are supposed to be fighting it, the ACC and DEC.

In commenting on the same revelations, Dr Sishuwa had made references to the whistleblower, in this case, Dr Kaaba, which, in the understanding of Laura Miti, were ad hominem comments. And from there, a quite vicious circle of exchanges ensured between the dual.

Now, this is not to be construed as a comment on the matter between Dr Kaaba and SG Muchende; by extension, maybe. Neither am I interested in what motivates Sishuwa in doing or writing what he does, whether monetary or political inclinations, as others have suggested.

I know neither Laura nor Sishuwa on a personal level, but I have followed both of them avidly. They are both sound individuals. That’s why it can be slightly disappointing that they can be engaging in such vicious exchanges publicly, eminent Zambian individuals that they both are. Unknown to them, many young Zambians could be looking up to them for inspiration or other.

What grabbed my attention though is the response from Laura in rebuttal of what she feels ‘ethnic assertions’ about Dr Kaaba from Sishuwa were or are indeed unfair and unacceptable!

The context is that, after making those damming corruption revelations about individuals in the ACC, the Solicitor General, in this case Marshal Muchende, felt his name was unfairly dragged through the mire and sought to sue Kaaba. Just as the public interest was piqued and was eager to see how the case plays out, suddenly and abruptly, the case is discontinued based on consent judgment!

In making comment on the matter, Sishuwa made quite illuminating arguments, deserving appreciation by any well-meaning Zambian, especially in evaluating matters of national interest like corruption. He attempted to proffer possible rational explanations to Kaaba’s possible motivations for withdrawing the case, which included among others, an ethnic consideration.

Among others, this is what amai Laura strongly rebuts saying it is not supported by evidence of Kaaba being motivated by or using ethnic reasons before. “Dressing another in tribal sentiment, where it is not an indisputable consideration, is unacceptable,” she says. She adds that, “to suggest O’Brian entered into the consent judgment in question because he, the SG and the President are Tonga, Sishuwa would have to show that O’Brian has previously and evidently behaved or spoken tribally.”

Key word(s) there: ‘previously’, ‘evidently’, behaved, ‘tribal’……This, I must confess, is quite fascinating! Hearing this, I couldn’t help but begin to wonder about the study of human nature – philosophy, psychology.

I must be quick to say that, what Sishuwa says there deserves everyone’s attention. Dealing with issues of national interest demand that we all bracket aside our assumptions, biases or prejudices. They demand that we all rise above our base human inclinations, and see them as such.

What Sishuwa says there is quite cardinal. Ultimately, what he says boils down to saying that, ‘the difficult conversations we are unwilling to have with each other today – with the people we care and love so deeply about – those conversations are going to be way harder to have tomorrow.’ And very often it is the nation itself that suffers when we skate or shift responsibility!

Now, what is it I find wrong with amai Laura’s stance? I will give only three reasons here.

First is the symbolism of action. Man is so intimately one with culture and reflects it in every aspect. His actions very often reflect culture and are so significantly fraught with meaning beyond just their literal interpretation. These actions can carry significance, both intentionally and unintentionally, and can thus be interpreted in very varying degrees based on context, culture or otherwise.

Not only that, based on Cantian Apriori Philosophy, (Apriori knowledge refers to knowledge that is independent of experience, derived from reason, intuition, or innate ideas), an action can be at once universal, applying everywhere, regardless of context; necessary, which cannot be otherwise and absolute (objective), not dependent on experience or observation.

Perhaps one just needs to stop and ask: what would an all-round philosopher say about what transpired? How would s/he look at it? As I indicated earlier, it’s not my focus here.

Based on the ‘apriori knowledge’ therefore, an action can be subjected to critical, ethical, and philosophical thinking. Man therefore can (and many times s/he does indeed) apply apriori principles to guide decisions, actions or thinking, ensuring they align with universal, necessary and objective values and truths. And among some examples of apriori knowledge we may also include but not limited to metaphysical principles (e.g., causality, identity), beyond just the literal, and ethical principles (e.g., non-maleficence, beneficence).

The Kaaba-Muchende-corruption issue underscores the place of ethical principles in our lives. Besides, on a metaphysical level, the issue underscores the Latin dictum “Agere sequitur esse”. Actions follow being and help to explain being. This is to further signify that man is a sum of his actions; he is indeed the author of his actions. And we can only come closer to some understanding of him through his actions.

The expression ‘Agere sequitur esse’ does indeed highlight a very fundamental relationship between existence (being or reality) and reasoning (argument). It suggests that our understanding of reality (esse) precedes and informs our ability to act, reason or argue (agere). In other words, we must first acknowledge and understand the existence of something before we can develop arguments or reasoning about it.

So an action (agree) was there, which therefore formed (or framed) reality (esse). This action was performed within a specific context, culture, background or circumstances, by a sentient being. How are we to evaluate that action? I don’t know; but for what I know is that the bitter truth is that, unfortunately, public people cannot be separated from their words and actions – they carry with them their actions wherever they go!

The expression goes to emphasise the priority of existence over reasoning, underscoring the importance of understanding the nature of reality before developing philosophical arguments. It highlights the role of existence in shaping our knowledge and understanding, suggesting that our reasoning is grounded in our experience of reality. It reminds us that sound reasoning must be based on a clear understanding of the subject matter, rather than relying solely on abstract arguments. In essence, it serves as a potent reminder to ground our reasoning in a deep understanding of existence and reality, ensuring that our arguments are informed, nuanced, and meaningful.

Thus, apriori knowledge helps us develop a deeper understanding of fundamental principles and truths, and improve critical, ethical, philosophical thinking and problem-solving skills. Now, our knowledge, arguments or reasoning per se cannot be grounded in the absence of reality, much less by ignoring or repudiating it altogether!

Man does not become better, let alone does Zambia become any better by denying or ignoring reality, in this case the ethnic/tribal reality. We do not become loving of each other as Zambians, nor do we build national unity by not talking about the very reality that divides us. Creating so much love or unity is not an auto process! We all have to be intentional.

My third and last point from which to view Laura’s position is the deep human psychology point of view. Human nature is quite complex and dynamic. It is also fascinating to study. In his “Thinking Fast and Slow”, Daniel Kahneman offers yet another penetrating understanding of how to evaluate man’s actions. Kahneman believes man is actually more irrational than we have commonly believed. In exploring the different cognitive mind traps, assumptions, biases or fallacies, he explains how so often people think they are in total control of their decisions, thoughts, and actions without realising how we are infact very often guided and influenced by something else – usually some deep seated biases that we do not even notice occurring deep in our mind.

Ethnic biases among others are something that remains deeply seated in all of us, subtly influencing our actions, even when we don’t realise it or may try to deny or suppress it! It is very poignantly part of us – a significant part of us making the most of who we are. And so for me, to face it, is actually part of trying to heal ourselves of its menacing effects of not doing so. It is one of the powerful ways to forge national unity we so erroneously try to think we can build by choosing to be convenient about it.

Escaping into convenient arguments does not make a reality disappear. While an empirical historical dimension is also important in evaluating people’s actions, it is not exhaustive. Laura’s rebuttal fails to appreciate all these aspects. She is essentially attacking rationality in offering a one-sided evaluation of issues here, particularly sentimental, convenient considerations. Zambia will perish, other than for other things, but also for our stubborn and arrogant refusal to confront the uncofronted – for continually playing it safe in the face of some conversations. It will perish for our unhealthy posture of deciding to go to bed with convenience, and attacking reason under the guise of convenience.

In my view therefore, if ever any blame is to be apportioned, we all have to take the blame, not so much for what we have erroneously thought the bad ethnic issue in Zambia is for the stance we have taken about it, than it is for the convenience and collective silence about it. We have all behaved tribal, ranging from some petty remarks like, “where do you hail?”, “which part of Zambia is this name?”, or “what is your surname?” to denying some (indeed very many) people today employments based on the names they bear, and to some even more complex and systemic tribal phenomena.

The elites specially have been to blame. In their arrogance of wealth and power, and in their intellectual arrogance, they have made everyone believe that being “convenient about the tribal issue” is the only way to deal with it. For very long time now, we have traded Zambia’s progress and prosperity with convenience. I find the narrative to cajole everyone into silence about commenting on politics, especially in social media platforms, belong together with this narrative of convenience and silence, and to quickly label anyone talking ethnic issues. Either way is betray to the nation. To remain silent and to be puritanical about ethnic considerations is still betrayal.

ZAMBIA HAS BECOME A PEACEFUL COUNTRY FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW THE LAW

ZAMBIA HAS BECOME A PEACEFUL COUNTRY FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW THE LAW.

Authored By Mupishi Jones

Follow and live your life within the confines of the law, you’ll enjoy your stay in Zambia. However play hero and dare the law,you won’t like the Zambia of today under the New Dawn Administration.

Unfortunately,we have our colleagues who were so used to daring the law with impunity,we had colleagues whose voices became the law, whose body and actions became a constitution such that whenever we saw them,we could see the constitution, whatever they spoke,it was law!

These were people who could disrupt traffic at peak hours in Cairo road on a busy working day, these were people who could disrupt citizens normal daily routines by matching anywhere without notifying the police, these were people who could not only insult and beat their own cabinet Minister’s publicly, but humiliate the police on duty with impunity.
These are people who could command government officials to prioritise their kinsmen, relatives, cadres in all government contracts including employment. These were the people who were given contracts with advance payments to supply goods, works or services but instead were supplying stories and they were never questioned.
These were people who thought the law exists only for others especially for the opposition and not them! It never used to dawn to them that the same police they were intimidating one day they’ll knock on their doors to ask them to account for their actions.
Today when asked to account for their actions, they cry loudest.

We also have other group of citizens who want to mount their political fortunes by daring the law. They want to play “Mandela’s,Nkhruma’s,Kaunda’s” in a totally different era and environment!
Once they are summoned to the police station to explain their conduct, they abandon their “Mandela’s, Nkhruma’s Kaunda’s” bravado and suddenly become hospital patients in critical conditions.
Others even run away into hiding!
They cry victims over the circumstances which themselves created!
Real politicians never cry foul nor run away from their actions, they never run away from their supporters, they stick with them even when death is facing them.
President Hakainde Hichilema never at any point ran away from the police or outside the country even when he had the means to do so,he remained with his people,he was humiliated to an extent where most of the time he felt a stranger in a country where he was expected to feel most at home!
He stood firm, always ready to account for his conduct.

My appeal to my fellow countrymen is that live within the confines of the law, work within the confines of the law, speak within the confines of the law, joke within the confines of the law and you’ll enjoy your stay. But if you choose to play hero by daring the law, then be prepared to face that law and don’t complain because that is your choice.
This is the price to pay once you choose to live under the rules of the law!
I submit

53-YEAR-OLD MAN SENTENCED TO ONE-YEAR FOR PLUCKING WIFE’S EYE

KASAMA Magistrate Court has sentenced a 53-year-old man of Mungwi District to one-year imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting his wife.

Kasama Magistrate Chapson Silwimba has however suspended the imprisonment to up to seven months while the convict will serve five months in imprisonment.

This is in a case where Joseph Bwalya of Ndase Village of Chitimukulu Chiefdom of Mungwi is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

This is contrary to Section 284 of the penal code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that July 16 2024, Joseph Bwalya in Kasama District assaulted Bridget Bwalya, his wife thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm by plucking off her eye.

Bwalya, who appeared for sentencing before Magistrate Silwmba in mitigation, asked for forgiveness from the complainant.

He further asked for Maximum leniency from the court stating that he was under the influence of alcohol adding that he did not know what he was doing.

And the complainant said she has forgiven the accused who is her husband and they have five children and three grandchildren.

She said she would not manage to take care of the children alone if the accused were sent to prison.

She said the accused is sick and he had learnt his lesson.

And when asked by Magistrate Silwimba as to why she reported the accused to police the complainant said she was told that it was the only way she could access social cash transfer funds.

And the Magistrate in his judgment said he considered the accused and the complainant’s mitigation but the offence which was committed by the accused is serious.

He said he also considered that the accused was the first offender.

Magistrate Silwimba said looking at the extent to which the complainant was assaulted and the medical records which was brought before the court, the accused deserved to be punished.

He said he would punish him stating that there is an increase in the number of Gender Based Violence Cases (GBV).

Magistrate Silwimba said this would set an example to would-be offenders not to commit such acts.

He said the accused needs to stop such acts adding that the period of the sentence will help him to reflect and maybe stop taking alcohol.

Magistrate Silwimba added that if left unpunished, one day he may end up killing his wife.

He said that beating loved ones is not allowed, especially since she has given him children and grandchildren.

Iran keeps region guessing as it mulls revenge attack

0

In the Saudi city of Jeddah on Wednesday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a group of 57 countries, held an emergency meeting at Iran’s request to discuss, among other things, the assassination of the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

The gathering was an opportunity for Iran, whose Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has vowed “harsh punishment” for the killing, to lay out the reasons for an expected retaliation.

Both Iran and Hamas say the assassination was carried out by Israel, which has not commented but is widely believed to have been behind it.

Baqeri Ali Bagheri Kani, the acting Iranian foreign minister, said his country had “no choice” but to respond, and that this would take place “at the right time and in the appropriate shape”.

Mr Kani also described the possible Iranian reaction as “not only a defence of its own sovereignty and national security” but also a “defence of the stability and security of the entire region”.
Haniyeh was killed in a heavily protected guesthouse run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s elite military force, as he visited Tehran for the inauguration of the country’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian, a humiliating breach of Iranian security.

Since then, every sign, speech, or statement from Iran has been closely watched for an indication of how and when it might respond, amid concerns the retaliation could lead to a wider conflict with Israel.

But Mr Kani offered no clues and, with apparent limited intelligence by the West, it remains unclear what Iran could be planning to do.

In April, a strike on the Iranian diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killed eight IRGC officers, another attack believed to have been carried out by Israel – and another embarrassing setback for Iran.

After days of telegraphing its intentions, Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel; almost all of them were intercepted by Israel and a US-led coalition, and the retaliation had no significant impact.

Last week, American officials suggested that this time, Iran might have been preparing a bigger operation, perhaps in attempt to avoid repeating that failure.

Recent media reports, however, suggest that details of how Haniyeh’s killing was carried out – possibly from inside Iran with local assistance instead of a precise air strike from outside – combined with the fact that no Iranians were killed and diplomatic efforts from Western and Arab countries, might have forced Tehran to reconsider its plans.

The Jordanian foreign minister made a rare visit to Iran earlier this week and, on Wednesday, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, spoke to Mr Pezeshkian and, according to the French presidency, urged him to “do everything to avoid a new military escalation”.

Meanwhile, there is also the wait for another expected attack on Israel, from Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia and political movement in Lebanon.

The group has vowed to respond to the killing by Israel of senior commander Fuad Shukr, which happened just hours before Haniyeh’s assassination, in its stronghold of Dahiya, in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Concerns of a major conflict in Lebanon are at their highest since Hezbollah stepped up its strikes against Israel, a day after the Hamas attacks on 7 October.

Most of the violence has been contained to areas along the Lebanon-Israel border, with both Hezbollah and Israel still indicating they are not interested in an all-out war.

So far, the group has mainly targeted Israeli military facilities, although its attacks are increasingly more sophisticated and hitting positions deeper inside the country.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who has promised a “strong” and “effective” response, described Shukr as one of the “strategic minds of the resistance” and said they had spoken on the phone an hour before his assassination.

In the past, Hezbollah retaliated to the killings of top commanders by launching barrages of rockets at Israel. Having such a high-profile figure assassinated in their base in the Lebanese capital will likely result in a more symbolic response, although almost certain to be within what the group describes as the rules of engagement.

Still, in Lebanon, where people still remember the devastation caused by the 2006 war between the Hezbollah and Israel, many fear they are being dragged into a conflict that is not in the nation’s interest.

But a damaged Hezbollah is not in Iran’s interest either.

With its precision guided missiles and attack drones, Hezbollah is a key element of Iran’s deterrence, right on Israel’s borders.

Israel sees the Iranian nuclear programme as an existential threat, and Hezbollah would probably play a vital role in Iran’s response if its facilities came under Israeli attack.

Hezbollah is the main group in the so-called Axis of Resistance, an Iranian-backed alliance across the region that includes the Houthis in Yemen and militias in Iraq, which have also carried out attacks on Israel and Western targets since October.

It is not known whether Iran and its proxies will co-ordinate their response, although reports in US media suggest Hezbollah may act independently, and first.

This week, Gen Michael Kurilla, the head of the US Central Command, visited Israel to assess security preparations, and the US is expected to, again, lead an effort to protect Israel in the case of an Iranian attack.

And the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has vowed to “exact a heavy price for any act of aggression against us, from whatever quarter”.

As the wait continues, flights in both Israel and Lebanon are being cancelled or suspended, airlines are avoiding the countries’ airspaces and foreign governments are urging their citizens to leave. Some people are preparing for war and the region could, deliberately or by accident, slide into one.

Mnangagwa has managed to make Zimbabweans hate SADC

0

Hosting international events is usually met with much joy and pride by the local citizenry.

I can just imagine the anticipation and excitement that gripped the people of France as they eagerly counted down to the XXXIII 2024 Paris Olympics.

With each passing day, I am quite sure this anticipation and excitement only grew larger and larger.

Now that the long-awaited event is underway, not only are the French over the moon that the Olympics are being held on their soil (for the sixth time) but are filled with profound national pride.

Who wouldn’t?

There is every reason for citizens to be driven by an intense sense of patriotism when awarded the honour to host an international event.

The same can not be said for Zimbabweans, however.

As we brace ourselves to host the 44th Ordinary SADC Heads of State and Government Summit, one would have expected Zimbabweans to experience heightened patriotic fervour and national pride.

Why wouldn’t we be?

How often does a country get the chance to welcome so many heads of state and government at the same time?

This was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the world what we were made of as Zimbabweans.

The international community had to see how loving, friendly, and united we were as a nation.

We were expected to maximize on this event so as to bring a usually polarized nation together whilst simultaneously undoing the longstanding narrative of Zimbabwe as an undemocratic oppressive society.

Above all this, as Zimbabweans ourselves, we were meant to look forward to this SADC Summit with excitement and anticipation.

We should have all been so eager to see all those regional leaders as they converged on our capital city, Harare.

Yet, that is not the case.

Far from it.

If anything, the generality of ordinary Zimbabweans now wants the meeting to be over with.

We can not wait for it to come and go as quickly as possible.

Maybe that way, we can have our lives back to normal.

Why would we not want this SADC Summit gone when the country now appears like a war zone?

How are we supposed to feel when hoardes of military personnel and their hardware now flood our towns and cities as if the country was preparing for some form of military conflict?

One would be excused for thinking the visiting heads of state and government were actually coming with their own armies to invade Zimbabwe!

Ordinary Zimbabweans now live in fear of their own government in a tense environment of uncertainty.

Why do we have these heavily-armed people all around us?

Surely, is this all about a few people who may decide to demonstrate during the SADC Summit?

As I have said before, Zimbabweans are fearful people, and there is no way they will ever dare protest against a regime that is notorious for its barbarity and brutality.

Besides, the opposition is now quite weak, fragmented, and ineffectual to seriously be expected to mobilize people into demonstrating in their huge numbers.

So, what is really going on here?

Be that as it may, over the past two months, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the crackdown on any voices of dissent in Zimbabwe.

Human rights defenders Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, Vusumuzi Moyo, and Samuel Gwenzi were recently forced off an airplane – after which they were reportedly savagely tortured, whilst being held incommunicado, and then handed over to the police.

Let’s not forget that torture is prohibited by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and by the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Torture is also listed as one of the crimes that constitute a ‘grave breach’ of the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the treatment of victims of war.

Then, there are the 78 opposition supporters who are still languishing in remand prison after being arrested at a private residence (of their leader, Jameson Timba) as they commemorated the Day of the African Child on 16th June 2024.

One was arrested and is currently incarcerated with her one-year-old baby, whilst the other (Tambudzai Makororo) required emergency surgery on her leg after an alleged barbaric attack by the police during their arrest.

Just a week ago, opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume was also arrested, on spurious charges of attending the same meeting as the 78.

We have had other voices of dissent – such as members of the Job Sikhala-led NDWG (National Democratic Working Group) and the ZINASU (Zimbabwe National Students Union) – maliciously arrested.

In fact, according to some reports, over a hundred people have been arrested so far over the past two months.

All these individuals and groups are accused of ‘holding unsanctioned meetings’ for the purpose of ‘planning illegal demonstrations’.

Nonetheless, what is an ‘unsanctioned meeting’ when these were private gatherings – which are permissible under the law without the need for any police clearance?

Besides, is freedom of assembly and association not protected under section 58 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe?

In the same vain, what is ‘planning illegal demonstrations’ – when the right to demonstrate is enshrined under section 59 of the country’s supreme law?

Let us remember that these people were not arrested as they embarked on a supposed ‘illegal demonstration’ but for ‘planning an illegal demonstration’?

How exactly does one ‘plan an illegal demonstration’?

Any demonstration needs to be planned first, before the legal requirements – such as informing the police, as stipulated under MOPA (Maintenance of Order and Peace Act ) – are followed.

So, at what point did the police determine that these people were planning ‘illegal demonstrations’?

Did the regime ever wait to ascertain whether these people – if they were indeed planning demonstrations – were going to follow laid down legal procedures?

Let’s remember that they are being accused of planning to stage demonstrations during the SADC Summit, which is slated for 17th August 2024.

This is still over a week away!

Yet, some of these people, such as the 78 opposition activists, were arrested nearly two months ago!

This is not all.

Now, events – which would have ordinarily appeared innocent – are being postponed due to this SADC Summit.

One of those is the Midlands Agricultural Show – which was originally scheduled for 15th to 18th August 2024 – but has been moved to 22nd to 25th August, ostensibly ‘due to the SADC Summit’.

What has a business expo in the city of Gweru got to do with the SADC Summit to be held some 280 kilometres away in Harare?

In a nutshell, Zimbabwe has become an uneasy and frightening place to live – especially with the impending SADC Summit.

The paranoia on the part of the President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa regime has definitely gone out of hand.

We now hate this event and want it to be over with as soon as possible.

It has brought the people of Zimbabwe nothing but misery.

We no longer feel safe in our own country and even our own homes simply because we will be hosting the SADC Summit!

In fact, we now wish this meeting had never come to Zimbabwe!

‘Doing the least obvious thing’: Ukraine embarrasses Putin with surprise assault on southern Russia

Vladimir Putin fixed the commander in chief of Russia’s military, General Valery Gerasimov, with a cold stare and a look of exasperation. The video, released Wednesday by the Kremlin, showed the Russian president was not happy with news from the southern region of Kursk.

At that moment, hundreds of Ukrainian troops, backed by tanks and protected by air defenses, were advancing into the region. Russian soldiers were surrendering; hundreds of Russian civilians in and around the town of Sudzha were fleeing with anything they could grab.

In two-and-a-half years of warfare, it was an unprecedented Ukrainian incursion into Russia. Putin told the Kremlin meeting that it was “another major provocation” by Kyiv. The region’s acting governor declared a state of emergency, describing the situation as “very difficult.”

Above all, it was humiliating for a Russian state that prides itself on protecting the motherland.

The Kursk attack was an audacious and counter-intuitive move from the Ukrainian military, what one analyst describes as “doing the least obvious thing.”

Despite steadily losing ground in eastern Donetsk, it chose to send elements of experienced brigades into Russian territory, with the apparent goals of embarrassing the Kremlin and forcing the Russian Defense Ministry to redeploy resources and providing the home front with a much-needed morale boost.

George Barros at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War says the Ukrainians “achieved operational surprise against great odds and are currently exploiting Russia’s lack of readiness in its border areas.” (The same tactic worked in September 2022 when they recovered much of occupied Kharkiv region within a week.)

The Russian regiment tasked with defending this part of the border abandoned its positions. Several dozen soldiers were taken captive, leading President Volodymyr Zelensky to express Friday “special gratitude to our warriors and units who are replenishing the ‘exchange fund’ – by taking the occupiers as captives and thus helping to free our people from Russian captivity.”

A column of Russian reinforcements was taken out by a missile attack near the town of Rylsk on Thursday night, possibly because the Ukrainians had managed to hack into multiple traffic cameras that are a feature of Russian highways. One Russian blogger, Aleksander Kots, said he had driven the route. “I noticed that there are cameras working along the entire highway. They are literally blinking their lights.”

Meeting little resistance, and with Russian communications in the region reportedly jammed by effective electronic warfare, the Ukrainian brigades pushed more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) inside Kursk in the first two days of the operation.

Good intelligence allowed advanced units to move still further forward in a somewhat chaotic battlefield, often bypassing Russian defenses. By Friday Russian authorities had lost control over at least 250 square kilometers of territory, according to several independent analyses and CNN’s mapping.

This wasn’t just a patch of empty Russian countryside. Among the places that came under Ukrainian control was a natural gas transit hub near the border through which Russia supplies Europe with substantial volumes of natural gas.

On Friday, a Ukrainian military Telegram channel declared the facility “under the control of the 99th mechanised battalion of the 61st Mechanized Brigade,” one of the experienced units involved in the assault. A video showed soldiers in front of the building, but Gazprom said Saturday that the pipeline was still operating.

Inside Russia, the sort of anger that had greeted setbacks at the beginning of the war was rekindled.

Andrey Gurulyov, a former commander in the region, reposted a comment on Telegram that demanded military prosecutors investigate decisions by commanders to transfer units from the Kursk region ahead of the attack.

And there was resentment amongst Russian civilians in the region, thousands of whom fled their homes. The head of the city of Rylsk – some distance from the most advanced Ukrainian units – said Friday more than half the population of 15,000 had left. Social media videos illustrated the frustration among civilians at the sluggish response of the military; some appealed directly to President Putin.

An expeditionary force

Ukrainian troops, even if reinforced, cannot expect to occupy several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory. This is very much an expeditionary force, albeit a battle-hardened one, that has exploited the absence of organized resistance to make ground quickly.

But holding a large chunk Russian territory is beyond their capacity and probably beyond their goal. Russian reinforcements will eventually make their mark, even if it takes them longer than three days to begin effective defense. On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry said units had “thwarted the attempts of the enemy’s mobile groups to get to the depth” of Russian territory near Ivashkovsky, Malaya Loknya, and Olgovka in the Kursk region. Olgovka is 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from the border.

There were also signs Saturday that Russian “Lancet” drones were beginning to degrade Ukrainian armour.

Emil Kastehelmi at the Black Bird group in Finland, which uses open-source intelligence to track the conflict says “time is running against Ukrainians – (the) Russians won’t be disorganized forever.”

Even if the Ukrainians need to pull back from more advanced positions, such an operation still serves several purposes. Barros says it “exposes some of Russia’s planning assumptions and critical vulnerabilities.” And Matthew Schmidt, who has taught strategic and operational planning at the US Army’s Command and General Staff College, said the Ukrainians’ “creative use of force was designed to put pressure on the decision-makers in Moscow” – and possibly cost some of them their jobs.

Russian military blogger Vladislav Shurygin crystallized all this in a Telegram post Friday, saying that the enemy had “very skilfully and accurately chosen a different strategy – taking advantage of the bureaucratic rigidity and sluggishness of the Russian management system, to exhaust Russia with continuous unexpected strikes on sensitive infrastructure and the civilian population, provoking discontent, disappointment and apathy.”

The Kursk operation also demonstrates to Ukraine’s allies that it still has the energy and imagination to surprise its enemy and embarrass the Kremlin at a time when much of the news from the frontline was bleak for Kyiv.

That’s not lost on Shurygin. “The goal of this new strategy is to put Russia before the prospect of an increasingly costly war (financially, reputationally and organizationally) and to force it to negotiate peace by November-December.”

Daniel Fried at the Atlantic Council says there is a long history of such surprise military raids – some inconsequential and others impactful. He recalls George Washington’s daring maneuver to cross the Delaware River in 1776, when he returned with captured prisoners and supplies and raised morale for the fight against the British.

Fried, a former US assistant secretary of state for Europe, says that by demonstrating Russia’s failure of intelligence and weakness along its border, the raid had punctured the Kremlin’s narrative “that Ukrainian resistance is useless and support for Ukraine is futile.”

Ukraine’s Kursk gambit forces the Russian Defense Ministry into some tough choices. It appears that existing groups in Kursk such as the National Guard, FSB and irregular elements are unable to combat the Ukrainians.

Barros told CNN that the military command may redeploy elements of the recently created Northern Grouping but the redeployment of significant elements “would likely further stretch these elements and create vulnerabilities in Russian defenses elsewhere along the border.”

Alternatively, it may call on Russia’s substantial reserves in a larger-scale operation – but these are critical for current Russian offensive operations inside Ukraine, where the continuous commitment of high numbers of troops has eroded Ukrainian defenses.

Or, Barros says, the Russians may turn to aviation to attack Ukrainian armor inside Kursk, thereby preventing Ukrainian forces from consolidating positions and assisting current Russian forces deployed in the area.

Whatever combination the Russians choose, they are trying to reverse a humiliating episode in the conflict just as sheer mass and air superiority in eastern Donetsk was beginning to deliver incremental progress, underpinning the Kremlin’s insistence that Ukraine give up four eastern regions as a condition for negotiations.

“The unfolding events demonstrate the extent to which Moscow has deeply depended on sanctuary in Russian territory to wage its war against Ukraine,” Barros told CNN. “Russia has undermanned its borders and border fortifications, relying on its perception of safety because it has not felt vulnerable.”

Across a southern border with Ukraine that is hundreds of miles long, that perception has been seriously, and unexpectedly, challenged.

Kenyan police taunted as they square up to Haiti’s gangs

0

Pressure is mounting on Kenyan police officers to deliver on their promise to help bring Haiti’s rampant gangs under control, six weeks after setting foot in the Caribbean nation.

When the first contingent of 200 elite Kenyan police officers flew into Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on June 25, they filed confidently off their Kenyan Airways flight clad in helmets and combat gear, carrying their weapons, and holding high the Kenyan national flag.

They chanted in Swahili while they psyched themselves up on the airport tarmac, as did a second batch of 200 Kenyan officers who landed three weeks later.
“Let’s go!” and “We’re moving!” came the cries.

Hopes were high that the Kenyan police would bring much-needed muscle to Haiti’s beleaguered National Police (PNH), as they struggled to hold back a deadly offensive by Haitian criminal gangs that have terrorised the capital and large swathes of the country for more than three years.

The Kenyans are the advance guard core of a UN-mandated, multinational force that will seek to restore peace to Haiti.

They were initially welcomed and feted by Haitian government leaders and by many in Haiti’s media too.

Radio Independent FM posted on X a welcome greeting in the country’s Creole language for the Kenyans, saying:

“Haiti is the country of all Africans. Since you are black, Haiti is your home. You Kenyan soldiers are at home and must be welcomed to help fight these wasters [the gangs] that prevent us from living in our country.”

However, weeks after the much-anticipated deployment, which had already been delayed by legal challenges in Kenya and logistical hitches, many Haitians seem frustrated and disillusioned that the force, along with their Haitian police colleagues, have not moved more quickly and decisively against the gangs, their bosses, and their known hideouts.

Frustrated commentary, expressing impatience and disappointment, is on the rise in Haitian media and social media circles.

There has been a chorus of calls for “actions, not words” and “concrete results.”

Some of the sharpest criticism accuses the Kenyans of “theatrics” and being mere “tourists.”

Critics point out that, despite high-profile joint patrols by Kenyan and Haitian police in Port-au-Prince, where they have exchanged fire with suspected gangmen, the gangs only seem to have tightened their grip on the capital’s south-western and north-eastern suburbs since the Kenyan mission began.

Gang members have attacked and burned or partially destroyed police stations and continue to prey on major highways out of the capital and inland.

There is a feeling among some that the Kenyan force has been too slow to make its presence felt.

“What are the Kenyans waiting for to act against the bandits?” asked local news outlet AyiboPost in an article posted to X on July 11, a fortnight after the East Africans landed.

Some two weeks later, the online news website Le Filet Info commented pointedly: “The presence of the Kenyan police in the country does not manage to frighten the bandits.

“They continue to massacre members of the civilian population.”

The Kenyan contingent has already experienced its first casualty since arriving in Haiti.

On 30 July, a Kenyan policeman received a gunshot injury in the shoulder in Port-au-Prince when a Kenyan patrol engaged gang members.

That same day, the Haitian police chief Rameau Normil, accompanied by the Kenyan force commander Godfrey Otunge, appeared to try to counter unfavourable local media commentary by announcing that more than 100 “bandits” had been killed by the Haitian and Kenyan police in operations conducted under a state of emergency declared in the most gang-plagued zones since mid-July.

Such statements, however, have not succeeded in placating public scepticism.

Confidence was not improved by the publication online of videos showing top Haitian government officials, as well as Kenyan and Haitian police escorting them, making a hasty retreat on 29 amid a barrage of gunfire from the abandoned General Hospital in downtown Port-au-Prince they had just visited.
Both Haitian and Kenyan police had said this facility was firmly under their control.

Despite such criticism, Haiti’s interim Prime Minister, Garry Conille, told BBC Hardtalk that he welcomed the support given how undermanned the Haitian police are.

“We do need the help, yet it’s coming in too slowly, and Haitians are growing impatient,” he acknowledged.

The prime minister also batted off those who questioned the deployment of Kenyan officers, given their heavy-handed handling of recent anti-government riots at home.

“The respect for our laws and operational procedures has been very good, and we’re very happy with the accompaniment we’re receiving,” he said, emphasising that the role of the Kenyans was to support and accompany the police, not operate independently.

Nonetheless, Kenyans have faced open defiance from prominent Haitian gang leaders.

Only days after the arrival of the first group of Kenyans, Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, an outspoken leader of the “Viv Ansanm” (Live Together) gang coalition, appeared in a provocative video lasting almost eight minutes that was posted on X.

Leading his masked foot soldiers in a strutting, chanting war dance through his Delmas 6 stronghold, they held their automatic weapons aloft.
“Here’s Kenya [the Kenyans], bullets [for them],” they chanted in Creole at one point.

Other gang leaders, including Wilson “Lanmo Sanjou” Joseph, the boss of the “400 Mawozo” gang, and youthful gang chief “Ti Bebe Bougoy,” have also been appearing in videos taunting both Haitian authorities and Kenyans, while the gangs continue to boast of their attacks.

In mid-July, the Kenyan contingent of the multi-national force launched their own X account, @MSSMHaiti, in a bid to set the tone of the public narrative of their mission in Haiti.

Its daily reports on the Kenyans’ activities range from receiving visiting dignitaries at their base to human rights lessons and upbeat accounts of “reassurance” patrols on the streets of Port-au-Prince.

But the determined optimism of the @MSSMHaiti stream, particularly references to “significant success” and “gradual return to normalcy,” appears to have rankled many in Haiti.

Some Haitians have denounced the Kenyan reports as, at best, overblown—and, at worst, “propaganda.”

Lil Pump Vows To Leave U.S. If ‘Stupid’ Kamala Harris Becomes President

0

Lil Pump has promised to leave the United States if Kamala Harris becomes the next president.

The controversial rapper and avid Donald Trump supporter took to his Instagram Stories on Thursday (August 8) to tear into the current vice president.

“I swear on my dad’s grave, if this stupid-ass bitch Kamala Harris wins the fucking election, I’m moving out of America, boy,” he said. “I swear on everything.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) later that day, he took his hate of Harris up a notch by claiming that he’ll perform a diss song aimed at the Democrat, as well as current president Joe Biden, at Trump’s next rally.

The “Gucci Gang” rapper has repeatedly attacked Vice President Harris in the run up to the 2024 election.

In late July, Pump questioned Harris’ racia identity after it was assumed that she would replace President Biden following his exit from the presidential race.

“Kamala Harris isn’t even black… she’s Indian,” he wrote on X, referencing unfounded claims about her ethnicity that have been touted by political opponents.

He continued: “She locked up over 1,500 people for weed related crimes and then laughed about it years later. The worst VP in American History. Trump 2024.”

Pump’s comments about Harris’ race have been labeled by journalism nonprofit The Poynter Institute as “wrong or missing context.” Harris’ father was born in Jamaica, and her mother in India.

According to a 2019 profile in the Washington Post, the Vice President “grew up embracing her Indian culture, but living a proudly African American life.”

While Harris did preside over more than 1,900 marijuana convictions during her tenure as District Attorney of San Francisco, most defendants never served time behind bars. Pump’s “laughed about it” comment was also untrue: it refers to an appearance on The Breakfast Club where she was asked if she had smoked marijuana, not about enforcing laws around it.

Meanwhile, Lil Pump demonstrated his skin-deep devotion to Donald Trump back in January when he got a tattoo of the former President.

The ink shows the controversial billionaire scowling and is based on his infamous mugshot that was taken after he was arrested in 2023 on racketeering charges over alleged election fraud in Georgia.

Pump simply captioned the post: “MAGA” along with two United States flag emojis.

Why is Government buying commercial land when it sits on free millions of hectares of land?- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Scandal; Government spends $13.5million on troubled Zambeef

Government buys a 1,200 hectares Farm for $13.5million from Zambeef when it has millions of hectares of free land

Government has acquired the Zambeef
Chiawa farm at a cost of US$13.5 million without tender processess or public procurement competition.

Government states that it will use the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to use the farm and expand its maize production and contribute to the country’s food security.

Government sits on millions of hectares of free land under its leasehold and state control.

In the 90s, government sold its state farms under the agressive privatization programme.

But recently government using the 1995 Land Act, set aside land for the adopted Zambian farm block development programme (FBDP) where Government had aside one million hectares of land for this development.

To cede such large tracts of such land to the State, government entered into negotiations with traditional authorities – comprising 4 paramount chiefs, 8 senior chiefs and 240 chiefs overseeing 73 tribes living on customary land.

It succesfully established 11 farming blocks namely; Masonde Farm Block,Mbesuma Ranch Block, Mansha Farm Block, Chikumbilo Farm Block, Nansanga Farm Block, Chongwe Farming Block, Simango Farm Block, Kalumwange Farm Block, Luswishi Farm Block, Solwezi Farm Block and Luena Farm Block.

But the Farming Block programme has suffered greatly as governments over the years have consistently failed to fund development of farm block infrastructure such as dams, access roads and bridges, electricity transmission lines and associated infrastructure.

But strangely, it has found a collasal $13.5million (K351million) to buy a small commercial farm?

We must understand that Zambeef is in trouble and is undegoing restructuring as demonstrated by recent events.

Recently the UK Government owned British International Investment Plc, hired Lazard Inc. to advise it on its Zambia Deal that has soured.

British International Investment (BII) invested $65 million in Zambeef’s securities in 2016.

Zambeef’s shares are currently valued at £28 million. British International Investment Plc, has hired Lazard Inc to help reschedule and restructure the debt.

The UK government’s development-finance arm invested $65 million in Zambeef Products Plc’s securities in 2016, when the market value of the company was about £46 million ($59 million).

The Lusaka-based firm now has a market capitalization of £28 million as at July 4, 2024.
Clearly someone has used public funds in excess of 13.5million to shore up the troubled company.
Scandal.

WHY IS GOVERNMENT WASTING PUBLIC MONEY BUYING A NON VIABLE FARM FROM ZAMBEEF AT $13.5M ?- Miles Sampa

WHY IS GOVERNMENT WASTING PUBLIC MONEY BUYING A NON VIABLE FARM FROM ZAMBEEF AT $13.5M ?

MBS10.08.2024

Woke up to surprising news that the Government bought (transactions already concluded) from Zambeef PLC a farm  based in Chiawa at a Colosal sum of $13.5M.

Apparently, so that government can (via the ZNS) start to farm Maize. Since when in the World did government start becoming the farmer itself? Has Zambia not been through this route before under KK’s UNIP era in pre 1991? There was a farm in each province if not district, to cultivate and rear animals for the population. Namboard was to market the produce, but all failed and all projects went bankrupt. Why are we going that route again?

Other than banana farms, I have never heard of another crop successfully grown on a commercial basis in Chiawa by any farmer. The soils and hot weather conditions in that Chirundu terrain maybe a big factor.

The Constitution of Zambia under Article 210(1) demands that government acquisition of assets ought to be done in a transparent and cost effective manner. Other than seller, land size and price, there is no other details availed for this transaction. Was there another farm seller or it’s just Zambeef from the blues? What is the expected EBITDA or IRR for this investment ?
Who handled this transaction and what’s their Commision if any? What were the terms of payment, cash or credit terms etc etc.

Then Government becoming a Farmer itself is also going to crowd out the private sector that is into agriculture. Should Government’s roles not start and end at creating an enabling environment for subsistence small scale and commercial farmers so that they produce surplus maize for domestic consumption and for export purposes?

Where has government that is broke found the $13.5M to buy the Chiawa farm? It surely was not in the 2024 Budget and not even in the supplementary Budget approved by Parliament a few weeks ago. Is NAPSA’s money for pensioners being used again and won’t NAPSA go burst given they’re funding every investment from the Ndola Lusaka road to KCM?

I challenge government to state how they hope to make the Chiawa farm viable when Zambeef itself who are seasoned agriculture experts failed to make the farm viable. Then we have drought and the Kafue and Zambezi rivers are at their lowest. So how will irrigation at this farm happen to risk a loss of the $13.5M pensioners or tax payers money?

I know the British investment arm CDC has shares in Zambeef, are they the ones we are trying to impress or redeem out of their loss making Chiawa farm? Otherwise I am at pain to understand how or where descendants of the Queen (expatriate farmers) have failed, us muntus (ZNS) with zero farming success story will manage to efficiently grow the maize and recover the $13.5M public funds that have been thrown there. Who is eating what in this transaction because it makes no farming or economic sense. Let’s however not forget that nothing remains a secret forever. This transaction will sooner than later come to haunt all involved and brokering this bad investment.

Then there is the question of whether vested interests in this transaction have been declared especially from known persons around top government circles who have links directly or indirectly to Zambeef and its main shareholders CDC.

There is surely more questions than answers in this exorbitant farm purchased by a government said to be capitalism themed but yet operating like they are a socialist or communist regime where owning and operating farms is possible.

ESCAPING JUSTICE: HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING FROM THE PAST?

ESCAPING JUSTICE: HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING FROM THE PAST?

By Sydney Chelaz

10th August 2024- The recent escape of JJ Banda, the Independent Member of Parliament for Petauke Central, from Chipata General Hospital raises alarm bells that echo past incidents involving high-profile individuals such as Pamela Gondwe, Kaizer Zulu, and Chilufya Tayali.

Despite the efforts made by the police in the present and past, these escapes bring into question the effectiveness of our security measures and whether we have truly learned from previous failures.

JJ Banda’s alleged escape through a window over two meters high, under the watch of police officers who were supposed to ensure his custody, is both shocking and concerning. How did a man, supposedly under tight surveillance, manage to evade the authorities so easily? Are the police officers merely scapegoats for a larger issue within our security system? This incident is not just a simple lapse in duty; it is a national security concern that demands immediate scrutiny, this gives meaning to the words of Graphel Musamba the Police IG who said we hv junckies in the police service who where recruited by the past regime.

When Pamela Gondwe disappeared with vast sums of money, the nation was left stunned, wondering how such a thing could happen in a tightly regulated industry like banking, such that even up to today there has been no proper communication on how far they have gone with the efforts to find her.

Similarly, Kaizer Zulu, who has had cases before the courts of law, disappeared, and all we’ve heard is that he was seen being treated by medical personnel in a certain country. And Chilufya Tayali’s brushes with the law and subsequent disappearances highlighted weaknesses in our legal and security frameworks, with Facebook pundits guessing where he is, even without certainty.

Yet, here we are again, facing another instance of a high-profile individual escaping justice. What lessons have we truly learned from these past events? Have our security measures improved, or are we simply repeating the same mistakes?

This recurring issue raises serious questions about the integrity and preparedness of our police service and other law enforcers. If individuals like JJ Banda can escape from custody with such ease, what does this say about our ability to protect the public from those who commit serious crimes? Could this be an indication that our law enforcement agencies are not equipped to handle high-risk detainees, or worse, that there might be internal complicity in these escapes?

The implications of these escapes are far-reaching. They not only undermine public confidence in the police and other law enforcers but also pose a significant threat to national security. If individuals who commit serious crimes can disappear without a trace, what is stopping others from following suit? This could potentially lead to a situation where the rule of law is compromised, and criminals operate with impunity.

As a nation, we must ask ourselves: Are we doing enough to prevent these escapes, or are we merely reacting after the fact? The answers to these questions are critical in ensuring that justice is served and that the public is protected from those who would seek to evade it.

The time for complacency is over; we must learn from the past and take decisive action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

HON CHITOTELA, HON CHILANGWA IN HIGH SPIRITS

….despite being in incarceration at Mansa Correctional Facility

Mansa… Saturday August 10, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

Incarcerated Pambashe PF Member of Parliament Hon Ronald Kaoma Chitotela and his Kawambwa Central counterpart Hon Nickson Chilangwa have said they remain in high spirits despite being in incarceration.

And the lawmakers have made it clear that they will not shave as a way of protesting for what they have termed as “injustice of the highest order”.

The two lawmakers have been incarcerated at Mansa Correctional Facility after being convicted by the Kawambwa Subordinate Court.

They said this after PF Members of Parliament led by Shiwang’andu PF Member of Parliament Hon Stephen Kampyongo visited them this morning.

Other MPs were Luapula Constituency PF Member of Parliament Hon Eng Chanda Katotobwe, Bangweule PF Member of Parliament Hon Anthony Kasandwe and Mpika Central PF Member of Parliament Hon Francis Robert Kapyanga.

Hon Chitotela expressed shock that he was convicted despite proving his innocence.

He said this too shall pass.

Hon Chitotela said he is a political prisoner and being persecuted simply because he is a PF lawmaker.

And Hon Chilangwa said this kind of injustice shall not go unnoticed.

He said there are a lot of cases committed by the UPND that have gone without any action from law enforcement agencies.

The Kawambwa Central lawmaker cited the k!lling of Jackson Kungo in Solwezi on the voting day and other criminal cases committed by well known UPND sympathizers.

He said someone, one day will pay for this mess.

Other people who have been incarcerated include Kawambwa Council Chairperson Chifumbe Kalumba, Kunda Chitotela, Chabu Chitotela and Davy Kaniki.

And speaking to journalists shortly after visiting the incarcerated lawmakers, Hon Kampyongo said the PF lawmakers saw it fit to visit their colleagues at Mansa Correctional Facility just to give them the support they need at this crucial time.

“We have visited our colleagues Hon Chitotela, Hon Chilangwa, our Kawambwa Council Chairperson Chifumbe and other colleagues who are in incarceration this morning. Of course they are in high spirits and they are conveying their greetings to all the PF family and the people of Zambia. They are okay and they have remained strong. We are here because we want to give them the full support they need,” said Hon Kampyongo.

“Indeed most of the people are in Mungwi for ‘Ukusefya Pangw’ena’ for the Bemba speaking people but we cannot go there when our colleagues are in incarceration. We know the importance of this ceremony but we saw it fit to visit our colleagues here at Mansa Correctional Facility and just to give them moral support.”

Hon Kampyongo emphasized the need for the people to remain united in order to improve the governance system of the country.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOLAR LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY IN ZAMBIA

By: ENGINEER BORNFACE ZULU

As a new energy science and technology engineer, I feel compelled to address a critical issue that affects the safety and well-being of our communities: the proper use and installation of lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are becoming increasingly popular due to their high energy density and efficiency, but they also pose significant risks if not handled correctly. This article aims to highlight the importance of not compromising on the quality of these systems and the necessity of employing qualified professionals for their installation.

Why Quality Matters

Lithium-ion batteries are powerful energy storage devices, but their potential hazards cannot be overlooked. Poor-quality batteries or improper installations can lead to overheating, fires, and even explosions. These incidents can cause severe damage to property and pose serious risks to the lives of loved ones. Therefore, it is crucial to invest in high-quality batteries and ensure they are installed by certified professionals.

Guidelines for Proper Installation

To ensure the safe and efficient operation of lithium-ion battery systems, the following guidelines should be followed:

1. Hire Qualified Personnel: Always employ certified and experienced professionals for the installation of lithium-ion battery systems. They have the necessary knowledge and skills to handle these complex installations safely.

2. Use Quality Components: Ensure that all components, including batteries, inverters, and wiring, meet industry standards and are sourced from reputable manufacturers.

3. Proper Ventilation: Install the battery system in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating. Avoid placing batteries in confined spaces or near flammable materials.

4. Fire Safety Measures: Equip the installation area with appropriate fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. These devices can help detect and mitigate any potential fire hazards.

5. Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular inspections and maintenance of the battery system to ensure it remains in optimal condition. This includes checking for any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction.

Safety Precautions

In addition to proper installation, several safety precautions should be taken to minimize risks:

– Avoid Overcharging: Overcharging can cause batteries to overheat and potentially catch fire. Use chargers that are specifically designed for lithium-ion batteries and have built-in overcharge protection.
– Monitor Temperature: Keep an eye on the temperature of the battery system. If it becomes excessively hot, disconnect it immediately and seek professional assistance.
– Proper Disposal; Dispose of old or damaged batteries properly. Do not throw them in the trash, as they can pose environmental hazards. Instead, take them to designated recycling centers.

The Importance of Informed Consumers

Educating the public about the risks and proper handling of lithium-ion batteries is essential. An informed consumer is better equipped to make safe and responsible choices. Before purchasing a lithium-ion battery system, consider the following guidelines:

– Research: Understand the specifications and safety features of the battery system you intend to purchase.
– Ask Questions: Inquire about the installation process, maintenance requirements, and safety measures from the supplier or installer.
– Verify Certifications: Ensure that the products and professionals involved are certified by recognized industry standards.

By following these guidelines and prioritising safety, we can harness the benefits of lithium-ion batteries while protecting our property and loved ones. Let’s work together to create a safer and more informed community.

EDGAR LUNGU IS A LAWLESS MAN; BY CALLING FOR UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE OF CRIMINAL SUSPECTS , HE IS ENDORSING LAWLESSNESS

EDGAR LUNGU IS A LAWLESS MAN; BY CALLING FOR UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE OF CRIMINAL SUSPECTS , HE IS ENDORSING LAWLESSNESS.

By Mark Simuuwe

It has become a habit  for Former President Edgar Lungu to sympathize with lawbreakers at the expense  of the rule of law .

His utterances over some arrests of those he either worked with or those he intends to hoodwink that they are politically together , even when they break the law must concern all of us .

In a very lukewarm and lopsided casual approach to a clearly straight forward matter of a criminal nature , Edgar Lungu is pretending to discuss our democratic space when  his hands are bloodstained with innocent souls he sacrificed for the love of power .

While ECL is trying to cheat citizens , Nsama Nsama  and Joseph Kaunda are no more .They were killed under his watch. Citizens were gassed .

We have not also forgotten that Lawrence Banda  and Mapenzi Chibulo are late and they will never come back as ECL dreams of coming back to sacrifice more citizens to his satisfaction.

Today , ECL wants to claim that the arrest of Fred M’membe has to do with democracy when he should be confronting the criminal element by arguing  from the point of law as a lawyer .

There is no unconditional release on criminal matters . ECL is already demonstrating his appetite to break the law assuming he came back to power by accident , which  accident cannot   also happen .

Instead , ECL must focus on justice and  not hypothetically  calling for sympathy .

We all know that ECL is the father of tyranny, lawbreaking and arbitrary arrests in Zambia as such , he is even a wrong person to talk about democracy.

As the saying goes , uwakalema takaleka ( old habits die hard) . And another which goes ,” you can’t teach an old dog new tricks “. Edgar Lungu will never change . It is too late for him to change given his age .

The arrests currently being seen are a matter of a question of what law has been broken by Fred and not whether he must be unconditionally released .

To call for unconditional release of suspects is a clear call to law breaking by a person who claims to be a lawyer .

ECL is a  Staunch dictator, law breaker   and a  tyrant  who can never  change and this is why he wants a lawless society in which criminals are allowed to roam the streets and break the law with impunity without being arrested .

This is why it was fashionable at his time for criminals of corruption, gassing , money laundering , fire tenders , suspicious 48 houses , ambulances , ghost workers , council workers without grade 12 certificates , illegal Mukula dealers, Ukwa bag businessmen and gun brandishing bloody carders to be walking around without being arrested .

There was a break down in the rule of law under his leadership because all criminals idolized criminality.

It was appetizing for ECL to see blood in the country at the hand of men and women in uniform.

We want to call upon all meaningful Zambians to reject this call to lawlessness . We must call for respect for the law and not willful breaking of laws as ECL  is used to .
