TRYING TO LIE WITH FACTS ABOUT AFRICOM OFFICE IN ZAMBIA- Fred M’membe

TRYING TO LIE WITH FACTS ABOUT AFRICOM OFFICE IN ZAMBIA
By Fred M’membe, President of the Socialist Party

Trying to twist facts to deceive the Zambian people won’t help Mr Hakainde Hichilema. Why try to lie with facts about the agreement to set up an AFRICOM office in Zambia?

It has been admitted by the United States and the Zambian governments that there’s an agreement to establish an AFRICOM office in Zambia. An AFRICOM office is not synonymous with a military attache or cooperation in training. It is not about the usual security or military cooperation between nations It is clearly explained in USA MoD documents. And we have also seen it in operation in Ghana.

When is Mr Hichilema going to be truthful about things he says or does? We have written to him about this issue but he has never responded. And now he is trying to threaten us with arrests! What type of people does Mr Hichilema think he is dealing with? We are neither cowards he can threaten, intimidate with arrests nor puppets, lackeys of corrupt imperialists and transnational corporations.

We think there’s something that can be learned from Singapore on this score. At one time in 1961, the late founding Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, was offered a bribe of $3.3 million (equivalent of $25 million today) by a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent to keep hush about an unsuccessful operation.
Lee, in his infinite badass-dom, turned down the offer and went ballistic on America.

In a report on the New York Times published in 1965 — and recently uncovered on Reddit’s /r/Singapore — Lee had uncovered a CIA plot and refused to kowtow to the American agency, despite Singapore being a young, fragile state during the 1960s. Apparently, a CIA agent had been caught trying to purchase information from Singapore intelligence officials. He then offered Lee $3.3 million for personal and political use if the failed affair was kept under wraps.

Thinking more about the future of his country, Lee refused, and asked instead for $33 million in formal economic-development aid for Singapore. It was only in 1965 that Lee brought the incident to light when he launched a public tirade against the United States which included chiding the “insensitivity” of Americans in Asia and declaring how he would never let Americans take over the British in maintaining a military base in Singapore. He also recalled the failed espionage attempt by the CIA.

His charges were immediately denied by US Ambassador to Malaysia James D. Bell and the State Department. Department spokesman Robert J. McCloskey vehemently denied allegations of CIA involvement. Angered by the denials, Lee escorted reporters into his office and whipped out files stamped with “top secret” and produced a letter of apology written by Secretary of State Dean Rusk — dated Apr 15, 1961, during the Kennedy Administration — where he apologised for the espionage attempt and indicated plans to discipline the offending intelligence agents.

The bribe had been offered in January of 1961, just before President Kennedy took office. Inheriting the issue when he took over Eisenhower’s administration, President Kennedy had offered compensation to Lee in the form of foreign aid.

Lee also threatened to release full reports and documents relating to the CIA plot, even planning to play tape recordings of interrogations and meetings on Singapore radio should the American government continue denying the allegations.

“If the Americans go on denying, I will have to disclose further details, which may sound like James Bond and Goldfinger, only not as good but putrid and grotesque enough,” the displeased Lee said. Embarrassed by their mistakes, State Department spokesman McCloskey quickly retracted his statements, and quite possibly learned that you should never, ever mess with Lee Kuan Yew.

“The Americans should know the character of the men they are dealing with in Singapore and not get themselves further dragged into calumny,” Lee reportedly said.

“They are not dealing with Ngo Dinh Diem or Syngman Rhee. You do not buy and sell this Government.” And that is why Singapore was in perfectly good hands with Lee Kuan Yew.

Truthful people tell things the way they are; they don’t twist things, they don’t lie.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter admits it was a ‘mistake’ to award the World Cup to Qatar

0

Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter has admitted that it was a ‘mistake’ to hand the World Cup to Qatar because it is ‘too small’ to stage the huge tournament.

Qatar was awarded the competition back in 2010, but the decision was met with huge controversy after allegations the country had paid bribes in order to secure the right to host the tournament. There were also concerns about the suffering of low-paid migrant workers to build the infrastructure in the tiny Gulf nation and discriminatory laws that criminalize same-sex relations.

The hosts have also come under fire due to the country’s human rights record and its anti-LGBTQ laws, with many nations planning to make a stance against discrimination when they arrive in Qatar this November.

Blatter, 86, was the boss of FIFA in 2010 when its executive committee controversially voted for the World Cup to be held in Russia and Qatar in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Blatter claims he did not vote for Qatar and instead wanted a “gesture of peace” by hosting the two tournaments in Russia and then the USA.

“The choice of Qatar was a mistake,” Blatter said in an interview with Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, his first since being cleared of fraud charges in July following a £1.7m payment to the former UEFA president Michel Platini.

“At the time, we actually agreed in the executive committee that Russia should get the 2018 World Cup and the USA that of 2022. It would have been a gesture of peace if the two long-standing political opponents had hosted the World Cup one after the other.

“It’s too small a country. Football and the World Cup are too big for that.”

When asked if he felt responsible for handing Qatar the World Cup, he added: ‘For me it is clear: Qatar is a mistake. The choice was bad.

‘What I’m wondering: why is the new Fifa president [Gianni Infantino] living in Qatar? He can’t be the head of the local World Cup organisation. That’s not his job. There are two organising committees for this – a local one and one from Fifa.’

At the start of the year it was claimed in an investigation from SonntagsBlick that Infantino had been living in Qatar since October 2021, renting a house in the capital of Doha.

FIFA later claimed that Infantino splits his time between working in Doha and Zurich -where the organisation are based, and that being in Qatar allows him to put his focus into preparing for the World Cup.

FIFA said in a statement: ‘As communicated in October 2021, the FIFA President informed the FIFA Council that he would divide his presence between Zurich, Doha and across the world, in order to deliver his presidential duties and be closer to the FIFA World Cup,’ FIFA said in a statement.

‘As he did during the FIFA Arab Cup, he will work alongside other FIFA staff in our office in Doha, when required, until the conclusion of the tournament. For the avoidance of doubt, Mr.Infantino has residency, and remains liable to pay taxes, in Switzerland.’

It is not the first time Blatter has claimed that the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar was an error.

In 2014, he said: ‘Yes, it was a mistake of course, but one makes lots of mistakes in life. The technical report into Qatar said clearly it was too hot but the executive committee – with a large majority – decided all the same to play it in Qatar.’

Manchester City star, Benjamin Mendy accused of ‘raping woman, 29, during lockdown party at his mansion after asking her boyfriend if it was ok if he tried to have sex with her’

0

Manchester City footballer, Benjamin Mendy allegedly ‘raped a woman, 29, during lockdown party at his mansion after asking her boyfriend if it was ok if he tried to have sex with her, a court heard today.

The 28-year-old Premier League star sat in the witness box as his lawyer, Eleanor Laws KC, began taking him through the first of the nine allegations he faces involving six different women.

Mendy said only now did he understand why the young woman then got upset, the jury at his rape trial at Chester Crown Court heard.

Mendy denied lying to ‘save his own skin’ over the alleged rape and sexual assault of a string of women.

The footballer led a partying lifestyle, having sex with women ‘within seconds and minutes’ of meeting them, the court heard.

Mendy is accused of being a ‘predator’ who turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game, prosecutors allege, regularly going clubbing in Manchester before holding ‘after-parties’ where young women were invited back to his Cheshire mansion and sexually assaulted.

He denies rape and sexual assaults on six women and told the jury any sexual contact was always consensual.

Mendy sat in the witness box, a French interpreter beside him, as Timothy Cray KC, prosecuting, began cross-examination of the defendant.

The defendant said that after his arrest for rape he had time to think in prison and realised his life was going ‘badly wrong’ and the way he was having sex with multiple women was bad for him and might ‘upset’ the women.

Mr. Cray said: ‘It’s a problem for you, within seconds, minutes, of meeting some women who you know nothing about, you would be having sex with them.

‘You were having sex with women without any thought of contraception.

‘You’re having sex with women who your mates had just had sex with, or about to have sex with.

‘But the furthest you are willing to go in terms of hurt, is all you have done is hurt some women’s feelings?”

Mendy replied: ‘Now I realise, yes.’

‘Well help us with this,’ Mr Cray continued. ‘Has anything that any of them has said made you think, “Do you know what, I might have got some of these acts of mine really badly wrong?”

‘As we listened to what the women have been saying, have you had this thought, “Maybe I should’ve taken more thought to see whether they really were consenting?”‘

Mendy replied: ‘It was all consensual.’

Mr. Cray continued: ‘In your case, there’s no room for mistake or misunderstanding with what you are doing with the six women. They have got that completely wrong.

‘Or, you got it completely wrong and you are lying? You are lying to save your own skin?’

‘No,’ Mendy replied.

Mendy denied that he might not make ‘good decision’ or misjudge things when drunk.

Mr. Cray then showed the jury a video clip of CCTV taken from Mendy’s home in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire.

Recorded at 4.42am on August 23 last year, it showed Mendy returning from clubbing in Manchester for an after-party at his mansion where he later allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl who also went back to his house.

In the clip Mendy is seen staggering around a Range Rover car, also containing Man City teammate Jack Grealish, his trousers low over his backside and wearing a head scarf.

Mr. Cray continued: ‘Are you wearing some sort of scarf? You can’t even walk straight. When you are like that, don’t you agree, you might get things wrong, for example about whether a girl wants you or not?’

‘No,’ replied Mendy.

The jury heard that shortly after arriving back at the house, co-accused Louis Saha Matturie leaves with a girl, aged 23, to buy £150 of alcohol from a local garage to carry on partying.

On the way back he is alleged to have raped the 23-year-old in the car.

Later on, Mendy also had consensual sex with the same woman after he had allegedly raped the 17-year-old in his home office and trophy room, where Mr Grealish was later found asleep by other party-goers, the court heard.

Mr. Cray continued: ‘I asked you at the start, do you think with that much drink, having sex with girls you have never met, might just be dangerous territory, where you can make mistakes as to what they really wanted?’

‘No,’ replied the defendant.

The first woman to accuse Mendy of sex offences was aged 29 at the time and had gone to his house, The Spinney in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, in October 2018.

She told the jury she made it clear she was interested in her boyfriend, not Mendy, but he grabbed her and tried to rape her on a bed.

Earlier Mendy, the woman, and others had been out clubbing in Manchester and then all stayed the night at Mendy’s home, with the woman sleeping in a bedroom with her boyfriend, one of the footballer’s friends.

Mendy said the morning after he asked his friend how he would feel if he tried to have sex with her.

The footballer, speaking in a strong French accent, told the jury: ‘I realise it is disrespectful and bad, I asked him if it was OK if I tried to have sex with her. He told me yes.’

Mendy said he went to the bedroom where she was having a shower and told her she was ‘sexy’.

Wearing just a towel the woman flirted with him, he said, and then they began touching each other.

‘Then I ask her if we can have sex. Then, ”No, because of my boyfriend,” to which Mendy told her: ‘He was fine with that.’

Mendy continued: ‘She started to be upset. I said: ”You can ask him if you want to?” She continued to be upset.’

He said he then left the bedroom and went back downstairs to the lounge.

Ms. Laws, defending, asked Mendy: ‘Do you understand, now, why she might have been upset?’

‘Now, yes,’ Mendy replied.

After the woman came downstairs Mendy said she could not get a taxi so arranged for his driver to take her to a train station so she could go home.

Mendy was also asked about a comment he had made the night before while they were all drinking and dancing in the nightclub.

He said the woman had been flirting with him and while dancing with her boyfriend he had whispered to her: ‘I am going to kidnap you.’

Mendy said this was just ‘joking’, adding: ‘The mood was good. Good vibes.

Ms. Laws moved on to the next allegation that two years later, in October 2021, Mendy had raped a 20-year-old woman three times at his home.

This was during the ‘rule of six’ period of the pandemic lockdown, and Mendy said he was trying to ‘hide’ the fact that he was hosting parties at his Cheshire mansion.

Mendy said: ‘It was wrong to have done that, I regret it , I feel like so embarrassed again, it was not the right thing to do.’

On October 10 last year police had come to his home during a party but the next night he had another party at home after going to a bar in nearby Alderley Edge and inviting girls back, including the 20-year-old rape complainant.

Visitors had been warned not to take photos or videos of his home during the lockdown-busting party but Mendy said he spotted the woman taking some video of the swimming pool area and grabbed her phone.

Mendy said he deleted a Snapchat memories video off her phone and began scrolling through her camera roll to check for photos.

‘I found a picture, naked, of her. When I saw that, I was like, ”Wow” Do you have more?’ Mendy told the jury.

‘She says: ”Yes, I have more”.’

Mendy said she agreed to go upstairs to his bedroom to show him more naked pictures on her phone, kept in a folder, ‘My eyes only.’

Mendy said he then went to the en suite bathroom and when he returned the woman had stripped to her knickers and bra.

He said she agreed to give him oral sex and to ‘play around’, but he denied trying to penetrate her.

Mendy said the woman was worried her sister at the party would be looking for her so they exchanged Snapchat details and left the room.

The woman then left his home but one of her friends stayed and had sex with Mendy, staying the night at his home.

The morning after he got a text message from co-accused Louis Saha Matturie, who had received a text message from one of the woman’s friends, saying she was upset about what happened and had not consented to sexual activity.

Mendy sent a text back to Matturie saying: ‘Bro, she took some snap, I say delete it. I see a few pics of her, good a, sexy big t. She suck me. That’s it bro. I didn’t force her.’

Prosecutors say Mendy is a ‘predator’ who ‘turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game’, while co-defendant Matturie allegedly had the job of finding young women for sex, which he denies.

Mendy denies seven counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault against six young women.

Matturie, 41, of Eccles, Salford, denies six counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault relating to seven young women.

‘Homosexuality is damage in the mind, it’s haram – Qatar FIFA World Cup ambassador (video)

0

Qatar FIFA World Cup ambassador, Khalid Salman has called homosexuality a “damage in the mind.”

The controversial statement comes just two weeks before the world cup starts in Qatar, a conservative Islamic society that has been criticized for its treatment of LGBTQ with fans scared of restrictions if they travel for the showpiece football event.

In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Salman was discussing the issue of homosexuality being illegal in Qatar.

Salman told ZDF that being gay was “haram,” meaning forbidden according to Islamic law. “It is damage in the mind,” Salman said.

As many people are expected to travel to Qatar for the World Cup, “let’s talk about gays,” Salman said.

“The most important thing is, everybody will accept that they come here. But they will have to accept our rules,” he said, adding he was concerned children may learn “something that is not good.”

The interview, filmed in Doha, was immediately stopped by an official from the World Cup organizing committee.

Salman was a Qatari football player in the 1980s and 1990s. He took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and has been selected as one of the tournament’s host country ambassadors.

Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup 2022 from November 20 until December 18.

Human rights activist Rasha Younes, reacting to the interview called Salman’s comments “harmful and unacceptable.”

“The Qatari government’s failure to counter this false information has a significant impact on the lives of Qatar’s #LGBT residents,” she said on Twitter.

The awarding of the football tournament to Qatar has been strongly criticized due to the human rights situation in the Gulf state and the treatment of foreign workers.

Earlier this month, football’s world governing body FIFA urged nations participating in the 2022 World Cup to focus on football when the tournament kicks off.

PF MADE A LOT OF MISTAKES – ANTONIO MWANZA

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Party Media Director Antonio Mwanza has admitted that the PF Party made a lot of mistakes, no wonder they lost power and are now in opposition.

Speaking today morning on Hot FM’s hot seat radio program, Mr Mwanza said the PF Party had degenerated into a grouping of corruption and violence.

“We regret our numerous mistakes. Going by how corrupt, selfish and brutal we as a Party had become, there was no way Zambian’s could have kept us in Office,” he said.

Mr Mwanza confessed that by August, 2021, the PF Party had completely derailed from the original vision of its founder and former Republican President late Michael Chilufya Sata.

“PF was formed on a pro-poor premise. Sata’s vision was to improve lives for all, including those of the poorest Zambians. However, those who took over from him diverted from this vision and we’re sorry,” said Mr Mwanza.

He acknowledged that there was gross economic mismanagement under PF reign, which led to serious hardships among citizens.
“The economy collapsed. It recessed to negative 2.8 percent as at August, 2021 of which it is now at positive 4 percent under our colleagues the UPND. As PF, we can only apologize to the Zambian people for our failure to manage the economy. However, I can assure you that we’re rebranding and we’ll bounce back to power in 2026, especially that Zambian’s have already forgiven us,” he said.

Mr Mwanza argued that the United Party for National Development was bragging of having achieved a lot in one year, yet there is nothing they are doing. He said that UPND were boasting of creating jobs, yet they were just filling-in vacancies.

“Let not the UPND and President Hakainde Sammy Hichilema become comfortable just because PF made mistakes. Let them work for the Zambian people and bring tangible developent. Let Sammy, for example, create real jobs. Otherwise, what they have been doing is just filling-in the vacancies, something which PF was planning to do immediately after winning 2021 general elections,” he said.
In August, 2021, the PF Party were whipped heavily by the 2.8 Disciplinary Committee of the Zambian electorote for various misdeeds, which Mr Mwanza is apologizing about today.

Majority of Zambians are highly doubtful the PF Party will ever bounce back to power, especially also looking at the fact that Zambians never go back to a party they vote out of Office as can be seen from what happened to the United Independence Party (UNIP) and the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD). It is felt largely that the PF Party is headed for political extinction.

WHEN I BECOME PRESIDENT, WE WILL REFINE THIS COUNTRY

….currently, there is too much disunity – Greyford Monde

Lusaka…. Tuesday, November 8, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) party presidential aspirant Greyford Monde has expressed optimism towards refining the country once he becomes Republican President.

Hon Monde bemoans the level of disunity Zambia has been subjected to under the UPND government and has assured Zambians that he will unify the country.

Asked what he would bring to the table in the PF, Hon Monde, who is the product of the rebranding that the party has been going through said he will ensure that the party remains united.

He said this when he featured on Mellenium Radio’s “The Interview” today.

“The moment I become PF president, we’ll make sure that we unify the party. And this unity I’m talking about will go beyond just a political party. So in the party we’ll invite other former party members that left. Some of them have formed political parties, we’ll invite them to come back home. We are going to talk to those ones that are not active to come back home,” he said.

“We will take divergent views from the people. We will listen to the people. The people will be leading. We are going to do servant leadership, true servant leadership. When I become president, we will refine this country. There is too much disunity in this country.”

And the contender said none of the eight (😎 of the people that applied for the top PF job is stronger than the party. He also said that PF is the most loved party in the country.

Hon Monde prayed that he should be the one to be chosen as the party president.

“That must he made very clear. I can tell you that this party is so loved to an extent you can even see people who don’t wish us well thought that there would be no candidate vying for the position of the PF president. And I can tell you the history of this country, it is the first time that you’ve had an opposition political party with eight strong contestants for this position, it’s the first time. The last time that you saw many candidates would be for governments in power,” he said.

“If any of the eight of us was stronger than the PF, they would have gone to form their own political party. The reason they didn’t form their own political parties is because they know that the vehicle that can make them win is the PF. When we come back from this convention we will come out stronger because then we will have seven supporting one.”

KCM About To Shut Down If A Decision Is Not Taken Soon- Judith Kabemba

KCM ABOUT TO SHUT DOWN IF A DECISION IS NOT TAKEN SOON

Lusaka 8th November 2022

Having being born on the Copperbelt and spent fifteen years of my employment life on the Copperbelt and in particular Chingola at KCM, I am saddened by the dwindled economic activities in the towns of Chililabombwe, Chingola and Kitwe.

This inactivity has been exacerbated by the legal battles that the company has faced for over three years now. These have resulted in a low or close-to-nothing of production activities at the once giant Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

Suffice to say that Konkola Copper Mines has been a source of concern for many stakeholders because the firm has not been operating optimally owing to financial challenges. At this point, the need to recapitalize KCM so that there is improved production is urgent.

Zambians may wish to know that the average integrated production at KCM has dropped by 65% from 7.5kilo tonnes per month before 2019 when Vedanta was running the mine to 2.7kilo tonnes today.

As at 2019 before liquidation KCM was a major employer with 12,000 jobs but today these have declined to 5,000. Where are the 7000 former miners and their families?

The current liabilities of the mine which stood at $786 million in May 2019 had now tripled to $2.4 billion by March of this year.

Suppliers’ liabilities have increased from US$220 million to US$778 million by May 2022.

While production has gone down, the mine is slowly dying and employees are going for years without any increment, Corporate Social Responsibility Projects such as support to hospitals, schools, soccer teams, sustainable empowerment by KCM is operating at an equal to zero funding, the communities , the people of Chingola, Chililabombwe and Kitwe who suffer the consequences of large scale mining are left vulnerable not benefiting anything.

As this is happening, we note that huge sums of money have been spent by KCM on legal fees which would have been put to good use.

As a former employee of KCM who worked under the Trust Schools and later under Corporate Social Responsibility , I feel saddened by the current status of the mine and the dwindling economic fortunes of the towns on the Copperbelt that are slowly turning into ghost towns.

It is immoral at this particular time to just sit and watch things going to their lowest.

As an enlightened citizen of the country and one with a duty to speak on behalf of the people of Zambia, I do not just want to be a spectator in the dying of the mine that has educated us and brought us to where we are but a participant in the governance of the country and make a meaningful contribution to my country.

Mind you my father was a miner at ZCCM for all his career and so the mine has always been part of us.

Twalibamwana shi mine mpaka twaba bana mine, so we can’t watch our mines neglected on the Copperbelt.

My call to duty is to appeal to the UPND Government to expedite the dialogue with Vedanta without delay. The matter is out of court for talks and one wonders why the delay now.

Conclude the talks and allow that asset to be recapitalized so that economic activities of Copperbelt are brought back to life.

It is a well-known secret that Vedanta is the legal owner of the mine with 80% shareholding. 80% share holding is not child’s play, its a huge stake in the mine and government must therefore work out a win-win formula for both parties which is the government itself and Vedanta.

We all are fully aware that the takeover of the asset in the manner it was done by the previous regime was highly irregular and unprofessional that’s why ZCCM _IH and the Zambian government has been in court for years.

Government must look at the offers on the table and see which one is promising to revive KCM and create jobs for the people of Copperbelt.

If the KCM asset continues to deteriorate, there is a risk of KCM shutting down resulting in a significant loss of employment.

It is a good initiative of Government and Vedanta to sign a legal suspension agreement , that was our call.

We ask that this long awaited decision should be taken as soon as possible, preferably by this November, in order to allow for the resumption of operations at full capacity of the mine and as we slowly approach the festive period , do we honestly want to enter 2023 with this same status? It is not healthy and not right.

Government must make a bold decision on KCM which will help the people. Critics will always be there but the role of government is to ensure that the people and national assets are secured from destruction.

Yours in National Service

Zambia Army Officer Lieutenant Nigel Mwaba, who was accused of Killing Dr. Tasila Tembo has been found with a case to answer

Court finds Lt Mwaba with case to answer over Dr Tasila Tembo’s murder

By Mwaka Ndawa
ZAMBIA Army officer Lieutenant Nigel Mwaba has been found with a case to answer by the Lusaka High Court in the alleged murder of his lover Dr Tasila Tembo.

This was after an arresting officer summed up the prosecutions’ case saying Lt Mwaba in his statement given to the police, alleged that Dr Tembo had jumped out of a moving vehicle amid a lover’s spat over financial mismanagement and infidelity.

A military personnel also told the court that Lt Mwaba sent him distress messages claiming he and Dr Tasila were in mortal danger as they were being held hostage, over an unpaid loan facility which he obtained from a South African shylock.

Lt Mwaba is accused of murdering Dr Tembo between October 24 and 26, 2020 after she terminated their intimate relationship.

Testifying before Mongu resident judge Wilfred Muma, Colonel Elias Zulu who is stationed at Zambia Defence Services Command and Staff College in Lusaka’s Kamwala area narrated that in October, 2020 he and Lt Mwaba who was under the directorate of Army Legal Services at the Army Headquarters in Arakan Barracks, were part of a task force organised for a special operation.

He said owing to the huge task that they were assigned to perform they were expected to work during weekends but on October 24 Lt Mwaba did not report for work.

Col Zulu said the team thought Lt Mwaba was running late, not until it was 09:00 hours when he tried to get hold of him on his mobile phone but it was switched off.

“We continued trying to call him but we could not get through, until we knocked off around 18:00 hours. The following day, he still did not report for work. Around 14:00 hours, I checked my phone and found messages which were sent around 11:00 hours from Lt Mwaba,’’ Col Zulu explained. ‘’The first message was saying; ‘I tried with them, one Zambian, two South Africans for a small debt I got, they tried to squeeze something but they failed. They got my woman for a small debt and we were both blind folded. Tasila screamed; I don’t know where they have taken her. If I don’t make it, look out for me’.”

He said Lt Mwaba hinted that his hostage-takers were sent by Tumelo a South African loan-shark.

“The second message read; ‘look for my mother’s number Dr Gillian’, the third message I received was Dr Gillian’s number and the fourth message read: ‘I have been given a chance with my phone to do what I can’. On the following day around 10:00 hours, Major Kainga phoned me enquiring if I was with Lt Mwaba, I told him that he was absent even the previous day’,” he explained further.

Col Zulu said he was concerned about Lt Mwaba’s absence and he later reported to a marshal about the alarming messages he received the army officer.

Upon reporting the matter, Col Zulu said he asked Dr Kainga to call Dr Gillian who confirmed that she was the mother of Lt Mwaba and that she informed Dr Kainga that her son and his lover had gone missing.

“On Monday when we reported for work, I informed my superiors that one of the officers I was working with had not reported for work for two days. Later, I learned from the media that the police were looking for Lt Mwaba in connection with Dr Tasila Tembo’s death. On October 28, police came to Arakan Barracks and recorded a statement from me,” said Col. Zulu.

And detective inspector Patrick Changwe of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe police station told judge Muma that he decided to arrest and charge Lt Mwaba for murder because his statement that Dr Tembo died after jumping out of a moving vehicle amid an argument, did not add up.

He said on October 27, 2020 Carol Phiri a friend of the late Dr Tembo’s, reported to the police that the deceased was abducted by her estranged lover Lt Mwaba and he was assigned to investigate the matter.

Chamgwe said he interviewed several witnesses, among them Dr Tembo’s brother, Lonjezo and his cousin.

“On October 28, 2020, I received a message that police officers at Woodlands Police Station had picked a dead body of a female person and the description given matched that of the description which was given by relatives of the missing person,’’ Changwe told the court. ‘’The information was that the body was discovered by the locals in Mikango Barracks at a traditional burial site in Nanking Army Training Centre and was deposited at UTH for postmortem.“

Changwe recounted that during the course of investigations he patronised all the places that the couple had visited prior to Dr Tembo’s death.
“I visited the Total filling station in Ibex Hill where I had an opportunity to view the CCTV footage which showed how the brother to the late was left at the service station and the vehicle drove off on October 24 around 01 AM,” narrated Changwe. “The vehicle in question was an Isuzu twin cab, grey in colour of registration number BAG 1984. The National Road Fund Agency was engaged to assist in tracking the said motor vehicle and a report was issued stating that it passed Shimabala Toll Plaza in the early morning of October 24 at 07:02 hours and was recovered in Mazabuka at a guest house where Lt Mwaba had abandoned it.”

He added that on November 28, 2020 Lt Mwaba was apprehended by military officers at Leopards Memorial Park after he was spotted frequenting his fallen lover’s burial pit.

During cross examination by Lt Mwaba’s lawyer Mauyaneyi Maribesa, Changwe could not confirm that the bone of contention between the two was that Dr Tembo constantly sent her nude photos to other men.

He affirmed that Lt Mwaba had disclosed that after Dr Tembo jumped out of the vehicle he immediately stopped, picked her up and helped her get in the car as she was bleeding profusely.

Changwe confirmed that Lt Mwaba confessed to having been confused upon seeing his lover unconscious following the incident.

After State advocate Frank Sikazwe informed the court that Changwe’s testimony marked the end of the State’s case, Maribesa of the Legal Aid Board made verbal submissions, asking the court to penalise her client for manslaughter unlike murder in an event that it found Lt Mwaba with a case to answer.

“We humbly submit that from the evidence of the 30 state witnesses, the facts and evidence before court clearly show that this case is purely that of manslaughter and not murder. We submit that if the court finds that the accused person does indeed have a case to answer it should be that of manslaughter and not murder,’’ said Maribesa.
In his ruling, judge Muma said: “I find that a prima facie case has been made against the accused person for the offence of murder and not manslaughter and I therefore put the accused person on his defence accordingly.”

Maribesa indicated that Lt Mwaba will call two witnesses to aide his case.

Lt Mwaba will exculpate himself on November 14, 2022.

MY GRATITUDE, MY POLITICAL BAPTISM AND MY EXPERIENCE AT KABWATA POLICE

Part 1

It has taken me a few days to write about what I went through last week, because I could not find the right words to piece everything together in one article. And though I wanted everything to be in just one article, it became more apparent as I wrote this that it was impossible to do so. So this is part 1 and I will finish off the rest of what I have to say, in detail, in part 2.

First and foremost, I would like to thank all the people that came to see me and supported me emotionally, physically, materially and financially. It was very humbling to see such high levels of support and within such a short period of time. I may not mention everyone, and that is not because I am not grateful, but simply because the space may be too little to itemise all the great deeds and support I got. So, many apologies to anyone that I may not mention by name.

Many thanks go to hon. Bowman Lusambo, hon. Tasila Lungu, President Sean Tembo, President Jackson Silavwe, President Chishala Kateka, President Harry Kalaba, Dr. Chishimba Kambwili, hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya, President Given Lubinda, President Chilufya Tayali, Dr. Fred Mmembe, President Cozmo Mumba, President Hector Sondo, Mr. Danny Bukali, President Wynter Kabimba, Trevvy Habuno, hon. Raphael Nakachinda, the 2021 PF MP candidate for Chirundu and team, my Vice President Mr. Ackson Kaonga, SG Charles Kabwita, Deputy SG, Rooster Zulu, MCC for Gender Mrs. H. Namwila, National Youth Chairman Mr. Paul Chileshe, MCC Zambo Tembo, MCC Kwangu Mukupa and all the members of the NDC Central Committee. The NDC Lusaka Province executive led by Vincent Mwansa, Mambwe, Simon, David, Mr. Mbulo, Tasila Lungu, etc (you came in numbers and I can’t mention you all by name but I’m truly grateful for all your hard work and ensuring that I was as comfortable as could possibly be in the cells. Many thanks to NDC members countrywide and from other parties, radio callers, etc, that bravely aired their displeasure to the injustice.

My hard working lawyers that ensured that I was not detained longer than necessary, Mr. Makebi Zulu, Mr. Benjamin Mwewa, Mr. James Tembo, Mr. Chirwa and Mr. Charles Changano. The Zambia National Women’s Lobby- special thanks to the Chair, the ED Mrs. Juliet Chibuta and Victoria, the Women in Politics Platform- the Chair, Ms. Judy Kaoma and Ms. Susan J Chipeta, Mr. W. Simwaka, local and international dignitaries, the Press and the general public. Special thanks also go to the police for trying to be professional in the midst of extensive and unreasonable political interference and machinations.

I would also like to thank my family, my children, my spouse, my mother, Mr. Owas Ray Mwape, Kina Singini, Linda Shachinda, Sister D, Barbra Kakubo, Mutinta Musokotwane, Sister Gertrude, Mrs. Chibuye, Mr. Chris Zumani Zimba and all the men and women of God that stood in prayer for me. Special thanks to all my cell mates, you made my stay there rather memorable with all your stories and drama. Same goes for the men in the next cell, your preaching, singing and party mobilisation made being at Kabwata Police all worthwhile.

My number one experience last week was of course the shock of how everything turned from defamation/ hate speech against the President to defamation of Clayson Hamasaka. Everything happened in a split second and you could tell that all they wanted was to lock me up. Instructions were given to have me locked up at all cost and those instructions had to be followed. At some point it was even so funny for me to see the behaviour of the police and I couldn’t stop laughing. If really I was there for the defamation of Clayson Hamasaka and the whole state machinery descended on me like that, then one shudders to think what would happen if indeed defamation of the President was the case at hand.

Funny thing also was what the police read out on the charge sheet as what got me there. I have repeatedly said that I don’t delete anything on my page and if I defame anyone, all you have to do is go there and lift off what I said as it is. I don’t know who taught the arresting officers their paraphrasing skills, but he/ she did a horrible job. Actually, he/ she lamentably failed at it. If you are going to paraphrase what someone said, make sure the meaning remains the same and don’t change it. But in this case, what I said and what the officer read out as my offence where two different things. I kept asking the officers if they had gone to my page themselves and seen what I had written and if what was there was what they were saying. They couldn’t even answer that and it was clear that they didn’t. Someone must have just wrote what they were reading to me and the next instructions after that was to detain me.

I will end here for now so that the article is not too long. But I will go in details of what transpired from the time I was questioned, detained and released, in Part 2. May God bless you all and all the people that stood with me during this time. I also hold no grudge towards the people that fought hard to even bend the law just so that I got locked up. After all, a prison cell amounts to political BAPTISM in Zambia. So thanks for the BAPTISM and may what you do now be your portion when you leave office. I remain committed to the cause and fighting for the people and their right to be heard. I remain committed to fighting for the Constitution and being the people’s voice on National matters. Aluta Continua!!!!

Zambians Generally Support Death Penalty: The Case Of 6 Suspected Criminals Gunned Down By Police In Lusaka

By Peter Sinkamba

ZAMBIANS GENERALLY SUPPORT DEATH PENALTY: THE CASE OF 6 SUSPECTED CRIMINALS GUNNED DOWN BY POLICE IN LUSAKA

The UPND Government has embarked on an excersize to abolish death penalty. I understand that bills will be presented in parliament soon to actualize the UPND dream of abolishing death penalty in Zambia.

Death penalty or capital punishment, is a Constitutional issue entrenched in the Bill of Rights. To effectively abolish it, Government needs to amend the Bill of Rights. And to do so, Government needs to conduct a referendum so that more than 50% of citizens in Zambia, who are holders of NRCs, not voters cards, approve of the abolishing of capital punishment. In the failed referendum of 2016, abolishing of death penalty failed. So, if Government merely scraps of death penalty from the Penal Code or other laws without amending the Constitution, such changes to the laws will be unconstitutional and therefore illegal. A constitutional challenge of such laws in the courts of law can surely lead to reversals of the purported abolishment of death penalty.

One good example of Zambians’ support for death penalty is the gunning down of six suspected criminals Lusaka two days ago. You will recall that police in Lusaka West shot dead the suspects after a heavy exchange of fire?

In a statement on Saturday, Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the incident happened after police received intelligence information that some suspected criminals were about to stage a robbery at a Chinese company along Kasupe Road.

“Police yesterday around 14:00 hours engaged in a heavy exchange of fire with six dangerous criminals who were armed with an AK47 rifle and regrettably six lives of the criminals were lost. This occurred on 4th November, 2022 around 14:00 hours along Kasupe Road in Lusaka West.”

I was keen to see whether there was going to be anyone who was to protest the extra judicial killing of the suspects. It was all dead silence. Not even UPND which claims to support abolishment of capital punishment protested the extra judicial killing of the suspects.

The the general public point of view, the dead silence was proof that Zambians generally support capital punishment. Otherwise, condemnation of the police on all media platforms would have been deafening.

But from the side of the UPND, the dead silence on the extra judicial killings was something else. It was deafening proof that the Party lacks grounded principled on capital punishment. For, if UPND approves extra judicial killings, one would justifiably question the Party’s grounded theory to detest and abhor a form of capital punishment that is sanctioned by courts of law after exhaustive appeal processes but applaud or approve extra judicial killings.

To be clear to my followers, extra judicial killing is the killing of a person by governmental authorities without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or any legal process. Extrajudicial punishments are unlawful by nature, because they break the process of legal jurisdiction in which they occur. Extra judicial killings are carried out by the state government or other state authorities like the police and armed forces.

So, if the constitutionality of amendments to capital punishment laws will not be challenged in courts of law and take effect, it will be interesting to see how the laws will work out: rejection of court sanctioned capital punishment but approval of extra judicial killing system.

Or will both types of capital punishment be abolished?

Only time will tell!

ZAMBIANS HAVE GIVEN HH A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

ZAMBIANS HAVE GIVEN HH A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

Typically and absurdly so is a Zambian mind to shift completely to an agenda on a table until it is fully convinced without any iota of doubt that the thing is workable as being exhibited in the just ended Council by-elections which recorded more than 97.5% UPND victory a clear vote of confidence in the leadership of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema and the New Dawn administration.

The Hakainde Hichilema-Mutale-Nalumango led government has convinced Zambians that, they are here to make people’s livelihoods better going by policy which is being implemented as enshrined in the UPND 2021-2026 manifesto and developing in tandem with the 8th National Development Plan as our country’s economy recovery is advancing in a right trajectory owing to the fact that illicit financial flaws have been stopped.

People of Zambia are happy that, President Hakainde Hichilema is delivering on his campaign promises which has necessitated a huge unprecedented employment rate since 1964; where job opportunities are being accessed by all the citizens regardless of their ethnicity, religion, social class or political affiliation unlike in the past government of Edgar Chagwa Lungu who used tribe as a weapon to suffocate some individuals coming from regions he and his nincompoops disliked because of the UPND and its leader who is a true embroidery of this great nation.

Rule of law has been restored, cadreism banned, people are free to wear the preferred political regalia any time any where without fearing to be attacked. Free education has been introduced from grades one to twelve were learners are not paying anything but attention to what the teacher is teaching. Retirees have been paid and those who are retiring now will be given what’s due to them three months after leaving the service. Students loans and bursaries have been enhanced in as much as meal allowances are being paid to learners in higher institutions of learning.

The stated above are among many reasons for the people of Zambia to give UPND 19 Councillors from the 21 seats during the just ended 4th November, 2021 including the Council Chairperson.

UPND GOVT SHOULD NOT ENTERTAIN VEDANTA RETURN TO KCM AND THEIR RIDICULOUS DEMANDS OF TAX EXEMPTION

UPND GOVT SHOULD NOT ENTERTAIN VEDANTA RETURN TO KCM AND THEIR RIDICULOUS DEMANDS OF TAX EXEMPTION

As Economic Front, we want to strongly appeal to the UPND govt not to entertain Vedanta to return to KCM and their ridiculous demands of tax exemption and refunds. The recent revelation by News Diggers in which VEDANTA has given govt conditionalities that once it sells its 79% shares in Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to its sister company, Volcan Investment Limited, all tax liabilities, electricity bills and employee dues under the new owner should be written off is ridiculous and an insult to the Zambian people.

It is so annoying to hear Vedanta demand that under the new KCM structure, the company should not pay import duty and taxes on imported copper concentrates and wants a subsidized power tariff of 6 US cent per kwh for 10 years with Zero withholding tax on any interest payment/accrued on any existing and new loans. And Vedanta has also demanded that all KCM suppliers should be exempted from paying VAT. This is total rubbish and ridiculous of the highest order by this investor.

From these demands UPND govt should understand that Vedanta does’t mean well to this country thus bringing them means burying KCM. It is foolishness for govt to continue entertaining an investor who doesn’t always want to pay taxes. If ordinary people are paying higher taxes who is Vedanta not to be paying taxes? Where will govt get the money for operation if Vedanta does not want to pay taxes?

As a party, we want to challenge Vedanta that why do they want to return to KCM where they claimed to have not made profit during their 20 year’s of operation? There is no investor who can continue to invest in a company where he has been making loses for the past 20 year’s. Vedanta should not take advantage of Zambians quiteness just because UPND is entertaining them. We know that Vedanta has always take advantage of unpatriotic leader’s to exploit our natural resources. They did it during Levy Mwanawasa govt where they bought KCM for a song and today they have returned
because they have found other selfish leader’s in govt who are ready to give KCM freely.

As a party , we call upon well meaning Zambians to stand up and protect KCM from these exploiters who made KCM go to it’s knees. During ZCCM …. KCM contributed massively to job and wealth creation on the copperbelt and the country at large but under Vedanta, we saw massive loss of jobs and collapse of economic activities on the copperbelt. KCM should be managed by the locals through ZCCM-IH and not be given to Vedanta who has failed the people of Zambia during their operations in the past 20 year’s.

Tanzania Precision Air Crash: I Tried To Save Pilots But Was Knocked Unconscious, Says Fisherman

TANZANIA PRECISION AIR CRASH: I TRIED TO SAVE PILOTS BUT WAS KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS, SAYS FISHERMAN

A fisherman who was one of the first responders at the site of Sunday’s plane crash which killed 19 people in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria, has described how he tried to save the pilots stuck in the cockpit and how he nearly lost his life trying to rescue them.

Majaliwa Jackson has been officially declared a hero, awarded 1 million Tanzanian shillings ($430; £370), and offered a job in the fire and rescue brigade for his efforts.

Speaking to the BBC from his hospital bed in the lakeside town of Bukoba before the government announcement, Mr Jackson said he panicked as he saw the passenger plane approach from the wrong direction, before plunging into the lake.

He rushed to the scene with three fellow fishermen and helped to open the rear door by smashing it with a rowing oar which helped passengers seated towards the rear of the plane to be rescued.

Mr Jackson said he then moved to the front and dived into the water. He and one of the pilots then communicated with each other by making signs through the cockpit window.

“He directed me to break the window screen. I emerged from the water and asked airport security, who had arrived, if they have any tools that we can use to smash the screen.

“They gave me an axe, but I was stopped by a man with a public announcement speaker from going down and smashing the screen. He said they were already in communication with the pilots and there was no water leakage in the cockpit,” Mr Jackson said.

He added that after being stopped he “dived back and waved goodbye to the pilot”.

But the pilot then indicated that he still wanted to be rescued.
“He pointed out the cockpit emergency door to me. I swam back up and took a rope and tied it to the door and we tried to pull it with other boats, but the rope broke and hit me in the face and knocked me unconscious. The next thing I know I was here at the hospital,” Mr Jackson said.

Both pilots are among the 19 confirmed fatalities after the plane – operated by Precision Air, Tanzania’s largest private airline – crashed near the shore of the lake.

Of the 43 people on board there were 24 survivors, according to Precision Air.

Mourners have been paying tribute and walking past the coffins of the 19 victims at a funeral service being held at the local football stadium in Bukoba.

Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa is among the mourners.
Earlier, he said an extensive investigation would be carried to establish the cause of the crash.

The plane left the commercial capital Dar es Salaam on Sunday and made a scheduled stop at Mwanza before it crashed at around 08.50 local time (05:50 GMT) as it was approaching Bukoba airport.

The airport has been closed until further notice.

UPND HAS FAILED, ZAMBIANS MUST BRACE THEMSELVES FOR DIFFICULTY TIMES NEXT YEAR, WARNS GBM

By Correspondent Reporter

PF presidential aspiring candidate, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has observed that the delay by the UPND government to distribute farming inputs to small scale farmers in the 2022 – 2023 farming season will negatively impact the food basket of the country.

Commenting on the cries by most farmers across the country who have not received their inputs by yet, Mwamba, popularly known as GBM and former vice president in the UPND, says he is shocked that President Hakainde Hichilema is failing to do simple things which he promised the people of Zambia.

He said what was more confusing is the fact that President Hichilema boasted of being a successful farmer who understood the needs in the sector better than anybody else.

Mwamba said while in the opposition, President Hichilema promised early delivery of inputs but wonders how he was failing to address the challenges peasant farmers were experiencing in the distribution chain.

“I was his vice president and among the key economic issues that we (then) said should be top of our priority was farming. Sadly my brother is failing to see what he saw then in the opposition. He is failing to even use his calculator to manage the prices. He has neglected the very economic sector he said was capable of creating over 2 million jobs for Zambians and feed the entire Southern region in exports and earn more foreign currency,” he said.

Mwamba said it is clear now with the failures the UPND has exhibited that the PF performed better in the sector, adding that Zambians should expect much more harder times under the foreign centred policies of the UPND.

He said in the last few weeks he has been overwhelmed by different small scale farmer groups from Southern, Eastern, Northern, North Western, Copperbelt and Central Provinces asking for support of cheaper and affordable inputs .

“Just yesterday, have had meetings at my office with leaders of various cooperatives who are asking me what has gone wrong with Mr. Hichilema who promised cheaper and affordable fertilisers to farmers? These cooperatives want us to support them as they fear that hunger will strike this country next year because of the delay in the distribution of inputs,” he said.

Mwamba has appealed to the UPND administration to learn from the previous government how it managed the agriculture sector and the procurement and distribution process of inputs five months before the farming season starts.

“This government is a failed project and it is good that Zambians are seeing it for themselves. The future of this country under the UPND is bleprocessing is under serious threat, it is heading towards the coma and by next year things in this country will be worse. Only the foreign interests will enjoy living in this country and not poor Zambians,” he said.

Mwamba said just like the UPND government has given free visas to foreign interests, Zambians should expect all sectors of the economy to be run by foreigners connected to State House.

Government has todate not distributed the 2022 – 2023 farming inputs to small scale farmers across the country, while most cooperatives started paying their K400 last week.

HH SHOULDN’T LIE, HE’S FULFILLED VERY FEW PROMISES – FORMER PF SG DAVIES MWILA

0

HH SHOULDN’T LIE, HE’S FULFILLED VERY FEW PROMISES – FORMER PF SG MWILA.

Monday 7, November 2022.

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila says President Hakainde Hichilema should learn to tell the truth because he has only fulfilled very few campaign promises.

And Mwila has wondered why the President has continued to say PF is dead and buried when it has been competing with UPND and winning some by-elections.

Commenting on President Hichilema’s remarks that his government didn’t tell lies, Mwila said UPND had not implemented any developmental projects since assuming power.

“The President should always tell the truth because he hasn’t been telling the people the truth. All the promises he made, how many has he fulfilled? Very few. So unless they take development there, then the people of Mwense will be able to change their minds. But as at now, we’ve told the people of Mwense that the people that can only take development is us because we are the ones in the majority there. If you look at what they are doing now, which road have they built from the time they took over government? I’ve never seen where they are building a hospital, school or road. All feeder roads being done by contractors, all contracts [awarded under PF] were cancelled in Central Province, Luapula Province and everywhere else,” he said.

“So what are they going to point at that this is what they’ve done? Yes, they can distribute t-shirts and chitenge materials but people will just get them and vote for PF. They are not going to win, I can assure you. They can buy people but I can tell you that you will see the results. Our soldiers are on the ground, and we are telling them what we’ve done compared to the UPND. The UPND has done nothing. That’s why they are resorting to violence. I can tell you that these guys will be more brutal than PF. As we approach 2024, you will see.”

Mwila accused the ruling party of being liars.

“It’s the PF that has taken development there (Mwense). We’ve built a trade school. We’ve built a district hospital at Mwense Boma. We’ve also built another mini hospital in Kashiba. So in terms of development, it is the PF that has taken development. Look at the promises they made, up to now they haven’t delivered fertiliser. We used to deliver fertiliser in June and this is what we are telling our people. So they are liars because they’ve also not reduced the price of fertiliser. They said we will be buying at K250 but people are buying above K1,000. So what are they going to do there?” he asked.
Meanwhile, Mwila wondered why President Hichilema had continued to say PF was dead and buried when it had been competing with UPND in by-elections.
“Where have we been buried? We’re competing with them. Just recently we won Luangwa Council and we’re going to win just now. Why are they attacking our candidates if they are popular? They thought PF was finished. They’ve realised that PF is still there and getting stronger. That’s why we have nine presidential aspirants. It means that the party is still popular. Hakainde Hichilema has always been standing alone, so we’re more democratic than the UPND. They only have one person but we have nine presidential aspirants,” said Mwila.

YOU HAVE NO MANDATE SUMMONING ME, NAKACINDA TELLS ECZ

…says it will be inappropriate for him to report the alleged electoral malpractice to the Commission as it is NOT in a position to admit its own wrongdoing

Lusaka…. Monday, November 7, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

You have no mandate to tell me attend the meeting “without fail” if at all you are interested is resolving the issues I raised, Hon. Raphael Mangani Nakacinda has told off the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

In a letter addressed to the Acting Chief Electoral Officer, the PF Chairperson for Information and Publicity has said the conduct of the Commission is no longer independent.

Hon Nakacinda bemoaned the manner in which the Commission handled elections in Kabushi and Kwacha Constituencies.

He charged that the conduct of the Commission confirms the loss of its independence and its illegal conduct which was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in its judgement on 20th October this year.

“As rightly observed in the dissenting judgement of the Constitutional Court, your conduct in the manner you handled the Kwacha and Kabushi by elections if left unattended to is likely to plunge this country into untold anarchy. Unless and until you are able to show that you are independent and make sound and legal decisions with the engagement of stakeholders, it will be difficult to have any meaningful engagement with yourselves,” he stated.

“You are in breach of your democratic and constitutional duty that this country holds credible, free and fair elections. The very fact that you can wantonly disregard a court order does not give me the impetus to entertain your purported summons.”

The PF Member of the Central Committee (MCC) said it will be inappropriate for him to report the alleged electoral malpractice to the Commission saying it is not in a position to admit its own wrongdoing.

He added that ECZ cannot be an umpire in a matter it is the alleged wrongdoer.

Zambia’s New Dawn Might Just Be A Lasting New Dawn

ZAMBIA’S NEW DAWN MIGHT JUST BE A LASTING NEW DAWN

What a difference a year can make! Under new management for a little over a year, Zambia stands out as extraordinary in every sense. President Hakainde Hichilema and his United Party for National Development have done an enormous amount to restore the foundations of Zambia’s economy and its democracy.

By Dr. Chris Patrick’s & Tara O’Connor

Surveying Africa for the latest trends can be dispiriting. West Africa has been sucked into the mire of a fresh round of military coups d’état as Russia extends its neocolonial project to the continent. In East Africa, the uneasy truce between Tigrayan rebels and Ethiopia’s national army has collapsed, leading to a fresh outbreak of conflict.

In Southern Africa, Zimbabwe’s inflation rate has become world-beating again behind Venezuela and Sudan, and the organised criminal activity of South Africa’s electricity utility, Eskom, is adding to Nigeria-style power outages of longer than six hours a day. All the while, Russia’s war against Ukraine has hit fuel- and grain-importing countries hard, pushing annual inflation in Botswana, Ghana and Nigeria into double digits.

Then there’s Zambia, which, I must say, provoked an ‘Ahh Zambia’ moment. What a difference a year can make! Under new management for a little over a year, Zambia stands out as extraordinary in every sense. President Hakainde Hichilema and his United Party for National Development have done an enormous amount to restore the foundations of Zambia’s economy and its democracy.

It’s worth remembering that it’s a restoration job because Zambia’s democratic tradition was established in the early 1990s. Its economic reforms and expansion programme extend that far back, too. The last five years of Zambia’s sixth President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, are a populist aberration – an interregnum – now consigned by a landslide democratic vote to history.

A year into Hichilema’s government, business confidence and activity trends are both up. Stanbic Bank’s July Purchasing Managers’ Index, from a survey of 400 firms across sectors including agriculture, construction, industry, services and wholesale and retail, to measure business conditions in the country, stood at 50 – up from record lows set during the pandemic.

Levels of employment are up and the Zambia Revenue Authority reported above-target revenue collection performance for the first half of 2022, with net collections during that period up by 24%, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Hichilema has formed a public–private dialogue forum composed of Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga, Agriculture Minister Reuben Phiri and Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba to drive State and private- sector activity in government’s job creation and innovation for economic growth and social development priorities.

Critically for Zambia’s immediate future is that Hichilema has successfully completed negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – begun under Lungu – for a £1.3-billion ($1.44-billion) deal, which will do much to underpin economic stability.

Many will recall that Zambia became the first African country to default on its international debt obligations during the pandemic. The IMF pulled no punches in stating that the country’s economic problems resulted from “years of economic mismanagement”. The deal is the first step in what promises to be some tough renegotiation of Zambia’s debt, which reportedly stood at $17-billion in December 2021, owed to a range of investors, including the Chinese government as well as eurobond holders.

Hichilema, a chartered accountant and former head of PwC Zambia, has already started the tough negotiations before the deal, cancelling some $2-billion in undisbursed loans from creditors. These notably included Chinese Export-Import Bank and the Industrial Commercial Bank of China’s $1.6-billion for upgrades to the dual carriageway between Lusaka and the Copperbelt reserved for construction by China’s Jiangxi Corporation.

Huawei’s loan for $333-million against a national broadband roll-out was also cancelled, raising the prospect of a return to international competitive bidding for contracts. Internally, HH, as the Zambian President is affectionately known, has slashed wasteful and unnecessary spending: his post on Twitter describing how he rejected a request from “the system” to sign off on new vehicles for the country’s mayors went viral.

The IMF had specifically called on Hichilema to address procurement and corruption. The now unhindered Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has made a series of high-profile arrests, including those of three directors of the Honeybee Pharmacy involved in a high- profile $17-million procurement fraud – collusion between Honeybee, the Health Ministry and the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority for medical supplies that were later found to be defective.

The ACC has also arrested Lungu’s special adviser, Hibeene Mwiinga, for possessing property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime – mainly vehicles worth $2.5-million. The ACC has extended its interviews to several high-profile members of Lungu’s Patriotic Front-led government, including former Lands and Natural Resources Minister Jean Kapata.

The proof is in the pudding. In just one year of sound management and efforts at stabilising the economy, Zambia’s inflation rate bucked continentwide trends and dropped from 24% to 9.7% – the greatest gift to Zambian consumers. Overall confidence meant inflows to the country have seen the Zambian kwacha become the best-performing currency in the world against the US dollar, rallying over 18.5% from January to September. This has allowed South African retailer Shoprite to slash the price of some 800 consumer goods in its nationwide stores.

And, with an eye on Zambia’s long-term and future productivity, Hichilema’s government, at the close of its first year in office, completed its nationwide teacher recruitment programme to employ some 30 000 new teachers for State schools to back up its introduction of free education for primary and secondary school students, laying the foundation for Zambia’s New Dawn to last longer than Hichilema’s constitutionally permitted two terms.

MY THOUGHTS ON GULF STREAM JET AS GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO SELL IT AFTER INVESTIGATIONS

MY THOUGHTS ON GULF STREAM JET AS GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO SELL IT AFTER INVESTIGATIONS:

By Tapson Kunda

(1) The investigation of those involved in the purchase of the gulf stream is welcome and those that were involved in it’s purchase should avail themselves to the investigative wings but they should know that they are free at the moment until proved guilt by the law.

(2) It is a well known matter by Zambians that the price of the said gulf stream was inflated meaning the government spent so much money to purchase that jet way above what was supposed to be spent on it.

(3) Will government be able to sell the gulf stream at the price it was bought at or it will be sold at a far lower price which is it’s original price there by making a loss just for the sake of fulfilling a campaign promise?

(4) Will government be able to recover the money from those who could have gotten something from the purchase of the gulf stream if tender procedures where followed and yet the price was inflated?

(5) In 2031 there will be an election and a new president will be elected. Will the 2031 president agree to use the same old jet which president Hakainde Hichilema is using or the then president will need a new jet?

(6) Why not keep the gulf stream but investigate those involved in it’s purchase so that we keep this one for future use than subjecting the government in future to start buying a similar jet after we sell that one?

(7) Is government going to manage to sell everything done by PF where corruption was involved by inflating prices?

-Will government also sell fire tenders? Will it manage to sell roads where corruption was involved?
-Will government manage to sell buildings whose prices were inflated?

(😎 If we can’t sell all these things listed in the presiding paragraph what’s so special about a jet which may be needed in future by another head of state after 2031?

(9) If we can manage to sell roads, fire tenders, ambulances and builds where corruption was involved I think I will support the selling of the gulf stream.

More Call for the Probing of PF presidential nomination fees

More Call for the Probing of PF presidential nomination fees.

November 7, 2022

Solwezi – With continued calls on investigative wings to establish the source of the PF presidential nomination fees,UPND Youths in the North western Province have petitioned Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) and Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to probe PF the aspirants who a few months ago were on the verge of bankrupcy.

North Western Province Youth chairman Bruce Kanema says the ACC and DEC must probe PF to find out where its Presidential aspirants got money for their Presidential nominations.

“We want the ACC and DEC to question PF Presidential Candidates on their source of money, follow them and ask them to show the nation withdrawal slips or bank transfers from their banks to the PF account,” he said.

Mr Kanema said the ACC and DEC must show us where these people withdrew the money from because for UPND, the PF are just showcasing that they have hidden a lot of money in millions in tunnels and their homes.

He said the PF candidates who were moving with bags of money must prove to the nation that money was genuine and its source by show of withdraw slips failure to which the investigative wings should swoop in.

“We also want them to explain to us why they hate President Hichilema with passion. They hated him in opposition and tried to kill him, even when he is Head of State they still hate him and are fighting him still,” he said.

The Provincial Youth Chair says the youths of the UPND will not stand akimbo and watch while a known group of state looters tries to use legal means to launder its unclean money.

Last week,Lusaka Province UPND Chairman Obvious Mwaliteta made a clarion call to investigative wings to probe the source of the suspicious funds accusing some local businessmen of foreign origin of being behind the huge sums of money.

Mr.Mwaliteta revealed that some of the presidential aspirants were on the verge of bankrupcy and wondered where they have gotten the money they were moving around in bags.

KCM, ZCCM-IH, GOVERNMENT, LAWYERS & VEDANTA PLC NEGOTIATIONS

KCM, ZCCM-IH, GOVERNMENT, LAWYERS & VEDANTA PLC NEGOTIATIONS

By Miles B. Sampa, MP

Monday November 7th, 2022

Following the leaked documents last week on the above captioned, I undertook some research to establish the actual status quo.

I have gathered that Vedanta Resources is actually in continuous dialogue with the Government of the Republic of Zambia after the suspension of litigation for an amicable settlement over the dispute of Konkola Copper Mine (KCM).

Apparently both Government and Vedanta’s approach is to protect the asset, its employees, and the communities of Chililabombwe, Chingola, Kitwe, and Nampundwe as the continuation of further legal proceedings will cost a lot to Zambia. This so given that KCM assets continue to deteriorate as the firm has not been operating optimally due to financial challenges and this has had a turning impact on the communities and the whole Copperbelt region.

It turns out that Vedanta with its global footprint and diversified portfolio is the most suitable operator that is experienced, technically capable, financially strong, and has the business acumen to effectively and efficiently run KCM. It intends to immediately turn around the asset-making a significant contribution to the developmental agenda of the country.

Being the legal owner of KCM, Vedanta has constantly been knocking on the New Dawn government door so they work together towards running KCM.

Vedanta is legally strong in the courts in Zambia and the UK. This is well supported by the fact that significant efforts to sell KCM to other companies were made previously but these efforts failed. This is because no investor can buy KCM without the consent of Vedanta given its official status as legal owners of the mine.

A spade has to be called a spade. Circumstances of taking over the mine from Vedanta was highly irregular. This was exemplified by the court of Appeal’s decision that ruled in favour of Vedanta in its November 2020 ruling and stayed the winding-up petition. The matter was then referred to arbitration.

The forceful attempts by the government to reposes KCM from Vedanta did and continue to erode Zambia’s confidence and credibility in the eyes of credible international investors.

Vedanta has however remained resolute in resuscitating its operations in Chililabombwe, Chingola, Kitwe and Nampundwe. This is evident from from their firm agreed with the New Dawn Government to settle matters out of court.

Vedanta is focused on boosting growth and creating a mutually respectful relationship with the New Dawn Government in providing support for the growth and development of the mine so it becomes a reality. KCM evidently has gone in some comatose for a long while and there has to be some give and take compromise between the government and Vedanta. Government will need give KCM and Vedanta a drip dose of ‘red bull’ to jump start operations. It in government and national interest that the KCM asset is quickly safeguarded to a period of stability from it’s current bad state status.

As a nation we should not hurry our heads in the sand but admit that copper mining is still the only significant economic and social backbone of Zambia. Its pivotal and critical therefore that the Zambia government holds with both hands Vedanta and KCM to give them a breath of life for a specified period. This will enable them cruise to full production within months and quickly tap in the current global copper demands and good prices in wake of a surge in electrical cars production and demand. Copper and Colbat are critical in the electrical cars and their batteries manufacturing.

May I repeat that KCM is the biggest strategic national asset of Zambia and there is no investor at the moment that can consider investing in KCM under the current on-going dispute between the parties more so in its current bad state both technically and financially.

Vedanta has given government a written firm commitment to developing the asset in a responsible manner. It’s in writing that they intend to increase the production capacity by investing an additional USD 1.3 billion to increase KCM’s integrated production, improve working conditions for employees and paying all suppliers on time.

They also intend to implement measurable and impactful corporate social responsibility projects in the communities operated by KCM. We looking financial support to likes of Nchanga Rangers FC in Chingola, Konkola Blades FC and Nampundwe FC.

KCM has been on the discussion table for over a year now since the new dawn government won the 2021 generals elections. It’s about time both the Government and Vedanta acted decisively with a mutual ‘ give and take’ approach towards their individual proposals and expectations laid on the table. A win win for the two is a win win for the people of Chingola, Chililabombwe, Nampundwe, the Copperbelt and the Nation at large.

The fate of KCM and Mopani Mines is no longer a topic for political gymnastics. We should reason across the divide in order to save lives of our people and entire nation. The two mines are the blood and oxygen lines for Zambia’s economy that is on a ventilator. Any delays on KCM and Mopani , risks the Country’s ventilator shutting down causing secondary fatal challenges. Dead and buried economically atleast.

Action on Mopani and KCM is needed today and not tomorrow.

MINI HISTORY OF JEWISH CONTRIBUTION TO ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH

MINI HISTORY OF JEWISH CONTRIBUTION TO ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH

Northern Rhodesia was a British colony together with many other countries that formed part of the British empire. Behind the scenes other nationalities took part in the business and economic expansion of the colonies.

In Northern Rhodesia a small number of businessmen of Jewish origin contributed to the early growth of economic activities. Notable among them is the Susman brothers Ellie and Harry who were pioneers in the early 1900s.

By the mid century Abe Galaun who arrived after Word War II became a powerful force in the economic activity of the new state of Zambia up to the time of his demise. He started Galaunia holdings which owned vast properties in the Lusaka CBD, was involved in large scale ranching and owned thousands of acres of land around Lusaka.

Most of these acres of land were sold to a Zambian estate developer and are now known as Meanwood properties where Zambians of the current era are still benefiting from the fruits set up by Abe Galaun by buying plots in Meanwood and building residential properties.

However, the number of Jews in Zambia has dwindled over the years and only about a 100 remain mainly in Lusaka and the Copperbelt

BRIEF HISTORY:

The two earliest Jewish settlements in Northern Rhodesia were in Livingstone and Broken Hill. When the railway reached Victoria Falls in 1905, there were enough Jews in Livingstone to start a congregation. By 1910, when the first Jewish wedding in Northern Rhodesia was celebrated, the congregation had 38 members. Jewish pioneers did much to open up the country, developing the cattle trade and ranching. Maurice Rabb, Harry Wulfsohn, Len Pinshow, Hanan Elkaim, and the Susman brothers, Elie and Harry, were just some of these Jewish immigrants whose enterprise and initiative laid the foundations of the modern-day Zambian economy.

The Susman Brothers, who arrived in 1900, were the first to develop large-scale wagon and river transport to Barotseland. Just before 1914, they pegged the Nkana copper mine but could not float a company to open it because the mine was in tsetse fly country.

They sold their claim for £250 to what is now the largest copper mine in Zambia. Sir Edmund Davis, Solly Joel, and Sir Ernest Oppenheimer were prominent in developing copper mining. Abe Galaun (1914–2003) arrived in Zambia just before the outbreak of World War II and became a dominant force in the country’s meat and dairy business to the extent that Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda dubbed him “the man who feeds the nation.”

Galaun was involved in a wide range of charitable enterprises and his extensive contribution to Jewish communal life included founding the Council for Zambia Jewry. In 1921, out of a total Jewish population of 110, 48 lived in Livingstone, 11 in Broken Hill, and 25 in Lusaka. In succeeding years the Jewish population grew slowly, increased mainly by refugees from Nazi Germany in the late 1930s.

As happened in neighboring Southern Rhodesia and the Belgian Congo, there was a substantial influx of Sephardi immigrants, largely from the Greek island of Rhodes. With the development of the copper mines in the north and the general growth in population and commerce, the Jewish population reached a peak of about 1,200 in the middle 1950s; most lived in Lusaka and the copperbelt centers of Kitwe, Ndola, Mufulira, Chingola, and Luanshya, in each of which there was a small but organized Jewish congregation.

After 1960 numbers declined. In 1968, the estimated figure was 500, excluding some 200 on short-term contracts with Solel Boneh (the construction company of the Israel labor federation) and other overseas enterprises.

Younger people tended to leave, and most of the older school-age groups were sent to Rhodesia or South Africa for their education. In communal and Zionist affairs Zambian Jewry remained linked until the late 1960s with the Central African Jewish Board of Deputies and Zionist Organization.

Thereafter, the Council for Zambia Jewry, after 1993 through its affiliation to the African Jewish Congress, oversaw the community’s affairs. Before Zambia’s independence in 1964 Jews played an active role in local government. Jewish mayors served in Livingstone, Broken Hill, Kitwe, and Luanshya.

In the political field Sir Roy Welensky was the leading figure in Northern Rhodesian politics from the 1930s until the Federation was set up in 1953, when he moved to Salisbury (today Harare) as deputy prime minister; M.G. Rabb was a member of the legislative assembly from 1959 to 1962, and S.W. Magnus was a member of parliament from 1962 to 1968, when he resigned to become a judge of the high court. As happened in South Africa, some Zambian Jews were active in resistance politics on behalf of the disempowered black majority in the pre-independence era.

Most noteworthy of these was Lithuanian-born Simon Zukas, who played an important part in Zambia’s independence struggle in the postwar era and in 1952 was in fact exiled on this account by the colonial government. Zukas returned to Lusaka after 1962 and later served as agriculture minister in President Frederick Chiluba’s first cabinet (1991).

A number of South African Jews who were prominently involved in the struggle against apartheid in their home country, amongst them Joe Slovo, Ronnie Kasrils, and Ray Alexander, were based in Lusaka for the greater part of their years in exile before returning to South Africa after 1990. The Zambian Jewish community steadily dwindled in the post-independence era. About 50 Jews remained in 2004, most of them living in Lusaka.

Zambian Jewry in the early 2000s comprised a small core of long-term “settlers” and more transient residents engaged in trade, commerce, agriculture, and the professions. The community comes together for religious services on the High Holidays and Passover, as well as for Israel’s Independence Day and other Israel-related events.

There are eight Jewish cemeteries scattered around the country, and they are maintained by the remaining members of the community, in consultation with the African Jewish Congress.

UNZA IS IN BAD SHAPE AND NEEDS A DIFFERENT APPROACH (PART 2)

UNZA IS IN BAD SHAPE AND NEEDS A DIFFERENT APPROACH (PART 2)
By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

In part 1, we discussed how the University of Zambia owed about K7 billion kwacha to various entities including statutory obligations debts to NAPSA of 3 billion kwacha for pension contributions (a thing which can affect future claims for its workers) and owing ZRA another 2 billion kwacha in unpaid taxes. We said the institution also owes for contributions to NHIMA, ZSIC Superannuation Fund and Workers Compensation Fund Control Board. Part of the debt, we said, was in form of penalties for defaulting in remittances. In that article, I didn’t address much how the government caused this problem by not remitting grants budgeted for and not paying its portions of the student bursaries for enrolled students from time to time. I also didn’t address poor and bad management practices at UNZA. I will address these later. For now my focus is to help the New Dawn Government see how it can be different from the previous governments and how it can make a change.

Today, let me pick up on the last article. I wrote this piece and the ones I will post soon over the last weekend as I was out of town working.

Firstly let me state that new information shows that UNZA owes in excess of K8.5 billion (approximately USD 500 million) in debt, in fact. Not the K7 billion kwacha I earlier reported. UNZA has been insolvent for decades and both internal and external audit reports will validate this point. UNZA has literally been running on borrowed monies from service providers and even its own employees (both retired and serving), banks, students, etc. This however is not sustainable and one day the institution will collapse. Had UNZA been a private company, it could have been liquidated by now.

Unfortunately, the 2022 and 2023 budgets do not address the reversal of UNZA’s challenges, which stem from decades of poor policies on higher education in this country. A number of areas that need addressing in terms of increased or enhanced funding haven’t been addressed. Even overall allocations in the two budgets haven’t shown a significant increase in budget allocation to UNZA by the New Dawn Government.

Despite UNZA being the only public university in the country which has a physical presence in all the 10 provinces of the country, it is getting a grant of K200m against an expenditure of K1.3 billion (as of 2021). The grant only covers about 15% of UNZA’s annual expenditure. The gap between the grants and UNZA expenditure is huge. The total income for UNZA as
as of 2021 is only K800 million inclusive of grants, fees from students and self generated income. This leaves deficit of K400 million/ year in Unza’s budget/annum.

The grant to UNZA was only increased by K15 million from K200 million in 2021 to K215 million in 2022. The monthly grant was K17 million per month in 2021 and it is now K19 million per month in 2022. Meanwhile the salary bill per month for UNZA is at K69 million. With the salary adjustments made in 2022, the wage bill is above K70 million per month. The means that the whole K15 million increment to the grant was swallowed by salary increments. What about increasing running costs? Honestly, how can UNZA be managed with such a deficit?

This means that the government grant is a drop in the ocean if UNZA is to be turned around. Of course the New Dawn Government cannot change in a jiffy the damage caused by UNIP, MMD and PF. But we need to start seeing some change in approach. Maybe a supplementary 2023 budget which is kind towards UNZA can be looked into. Or at least let 2024 budget be pro-UNZA. Otherwise we shall kill pubic Universities.

In the meantime, what needs addressing as low-hanging fruits are two issues: salaries for UNZA workers and accommodation for students’ accommodation.

The biggest challenge to successive administrations at UNZA (including the current one which was only appointed in May this year) is how to finance salaries for UNZA’s 800 full-time employees and about 200 part-timers. UNZA’s gross salary bill is at K69 million per month but what it can afford to pay is only the net at K42million per month. The shortfall (K27 million) accumulates into UNZA debt monthly and this has been going on for decades.

There is a misplaced thinking among technocrats and politicians alike in this country that UNZA should self-finance it’s budget at 100% including financing salaries from its own revenue. This is an impossible task given the current economic environment in the country but also the current structure of UNZA, which is geared towards, teaching and learning, research and community service and the quantum of investment to the institution. We have to remember that UNZA falls under the social sector just like the Ministry of Health. It is not there to generate profits. It provides a common good or a service to the country by developing specialised skilled human capital to develop this country. This task UNZA has performed and continues to perform without fail. Zambia doesn’t have a private sector huge and viable enough to finance Research and Development activities that can then fund UNZA’s budget.

In countries like Zimbabwe, salaries are fully paid by government including separation packages. This gives public universities a breather to deploy fees and other internal revenue towards running costs of the university, which in most cases should be three-folds the wage bill. Only, the UNIP government ran UNZA that way. Successive governments in this country have failed to appreciate and accept this logic. So you find that they keep changing managements thinking that by so doing they are going to solve UNZA’s problems. This is a wrong prescription for UNZA and when you give a patient a wrong prescription you are most likely going to kill that patient. This is what is happening to UNZA at the moment. The institution is in a comma.

The silence from UNZA on important national matters tells it all. This is very uncharacteristic of a university which is supposed to be the light of the nation. Everybody appears to have adopted a business as usual attitude, provided they can receive a salary at the end of the month. No one wants to rock the boat and show the importance of Zambian intelligentsia.

There is an urgent need to change the financing model and to restructure the University. UNZA also needs to start phasing out some old programmes and introducing demand-driven new courses. Additionally, there is urgent need to clear the huge historical debt referred to earlier.

In a related matter, the New Dawn Government should provide a separate grant to support research. This stopped in the 1980’s. Since then most of the research taking place at UNZA is externally funded. This is not the best scenario because, ‘he who pays the piper calls the tune’, meaning that not all the externally financed research might be useful to Zambia. As a country we need to finance our own strategic research for national development.

Government should depoliticise the university by removing partisan politics, which have polarised this strategic national institution. Politicians are financing rival political parties at UNZA and setting up political party branches. This was not the case even in the 1990s. This is very divisive and has destroyed the collegial and academic environment required in any university. The environment at UNZA is toxic. The problem of this partisan leaning is that it may end up bringing in victimisation and dismissals based on party affiliations. The ugly face of tribalism and nepotism can also appear at the national university since our national politics still have a tribal angle to them.

As a matter of policy, government should remove Labour Unions in public universities from among academic members of staff, which are also very political in nature, and replace them with Staff Associations. This is what obtains in many progressive universities. Only staff below the ranks of academic staff should belong to Labour Unions.

Which brings me to the last point for today. Government should invest in infrastructure modernisation and expansion. At UNZA, student accommodation remains a big challenge. Bed spaces have remained static for a long time at 3,900 bed spaces (combined UNZA GER Campus and Ridgeway Campus) from the time UNZA had about 4,000 students. About 20 years ago, the UNZA Senate delinked enrolments from number of bedspaces and this means UNZA students increased exponentially to the current number of students which stands at about 24,000 plus. The demand for university education increased several folds but without a corresponding increase in infrastructure. This means that less that 16% of the students have somewhere to sleep or live.

There was a project by the government to construct 26 (4-storey) blocks at UNZA with a total bedspace of 4,160. This stalled due to lack of finances and these buildings which are tantalisingly close to completion are still idle. There was also 4 hostels done by COJAR under the Ministry of Sports for the All Africa Games in 2011 which were also not completed. These were to provide another 640 bed-spaces. These structures give the New Dawn Government an opportunity to win public goodwill by completing them and giving students another 5000 bedspaces. The government doesn’t even have to finance this. It can simply allow private sector to invest the funds needed to complete the buildings and then run them under a PPP arrangement. With borders and roads benefiting from PPP, why not the education sector, which benefits mostly the poor and is a sure vote-winner for the UPND and the New Dawn Government.

Lets move!

I will end here for the day. Next time I will talk about the need for a substantive UNZA Council which has been missing for 7 years as well as issues of student loans.

Cameroon President Paul Biya Marks 40 Years In Power

0

His long stay in power can be ascribed to a mixture of astuteness and ruthlessness. Whichever way you look at it, 89-year-old President Paul Biya will mark his forty (40) years as Cameroon’s president on November 6, continuing his firm grip on power in the Central African nation.

Biya assumed office as president on 6 November 1982, after seven years as the country’s prime minister, becoming only the second head of state since Cameroon’s independence from France in 1960.

Political analysts say his extraordinary political longevity can be ascribed to a mixture of astuteness and ruthlessness. He has a close-knit group of loyalists who hold key positions, and crushes or sidelines opponents and rivals.

With an increasingly fragile state, a situation that has seen President Biya make rare appearances, the question of succession is a distant thought. Those who have raised interest in unseating President Biya have either ended up at the country’s biggest prison, Kondengui or have dropped that interest altogether.

The Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM, the biggest political party in the country have planned a nationwide celebration on November 6 to mark this day. It will be a celebration of ‘political stability and peace, the biggest successes of these last four decades in Cameroon,’ says a member of the party’s central committee, Herve Emmanuel Nkom.

Systemic corruption is Cameroon’s biggest downfall, says the ex-head of Transparency International and former presidential candidate Akere Muna.

“On the production of mines, who are the miners? What do they produce? What do they pay to the country? Why do the citizens not have access to information about spending on their own country’s riches,” he says.

Elvis Ngolle Ngolle one of Biya’s close collaborators says that under Biya’s rule, Cameroon has enhanced women’s rights and vastly improved its education system. “In 1982, we had one state university,” Ngolle Ngolle said. “Today we have more than 11 state universities and hundreds of private university institutes. Incredible in 40 years.”

Opposition political parties accuse Biya of rigging elections for decades and want to stay in power until he dies. The Cameroon Renaissance Movement, led by Maurice Kamto, says Kamto won the October 2018 presidential election and that the victory was stolen from him.

Christopher Ndong, the CRM’s secretary-general, said Biya shows no signs of giving up the presidency and that, “Cameroonians are aggrieved because of him.” “The opposition political parties want him to revise the electoral code, making sure the next president of this country should be democratically elected,” Ndong said. “Cameroonians now want a democratically elected president.”

The government is also engaged in a bitter battle against Anglophone separatists in the country’s two English-speaking regions that has forced about two million Cameroonians from their homes and killed thousands of civilians.

“He changed the name of the country from the United Republic to the La République du Cameroun, which is the name the French-speaking republic of Cameroon had before we ever joined them in 1961,” one Yaounde inhabitant told Joy News, saying it sums up the Anglophone grievance against the French-speaking majority.

“It will be good if the regime tries to change,” says another woman. “Why not make it a woman, why not make it a young person to take over?”

Anthony Joshua reveals he is still emotionally ‘hurting’ following his second straight defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August

Anthony Joshua reveals he is still emotionally ‘hurting’ following his second straight defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August
Following his second consecutive loss to Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua has admitted he is still ‘hurting’ emotionally.

The British-Nigerian boxer, who had already lost his WBA, WBO, and IBF titles to the Ukrainian genius in September of last year, was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk for the second time in a row in August.

Joshua claims that his emotions are “affecting his ring action” and that the fact that he is no longer the champion “hurts.” He yet asserts that he will be “ready to battle again next year.”

Joshua said to DAZN that his life was hard. For me, boxing has become quite challenging.

While I’m boxing, everyone is just trying to maximize their time, and they’re doing a terrific job of it.

But it does affect my ring activity. So I’m just always trying to push that stuff away. It’s a challenge. I’m just trying to get it out the way this year, so next year I can just focus.

‘I’m not champion and it’s just hurting a lot. So I’m in the gym rebuilding and restructuring everything I have to do inside and outside of the ring.

‘There is a lot that goes on outside the ring in my life which makes my ring life complicated.

‘So I just need to simplify a lot of stuff outside the ring and then I can put my full attention in the ring. And once I’ve got that done, next year I’ll be ready.’

He has since been linked with a potential fight against Deontay Wilder in 2023 – with Eddie Hearn confirming both parties have entered talks over a potential deal.

However, AJ has remained coy over his future. He said he doesn’t ‘want to make statements and then get held to the cross’.

He told DAZN: ‘I don’t know [when I’ll be back]. I was supposed to be in the ring this year, I’m going to be in the ring next year.

‘I’ll be in the ring when I’m in the ring. I don’t want to make statements today and then I’ll get held to the cross. Do you know what I mean? When I’m ready, I’ll be back in the ring.’

Kanye West reportedly blamed Rihanna for domestic abuse

<a href=Kanye West reportedly blamed Rihanna for domestic abuse" title="Kanye West reportedly blamed Rihanna for domestic abuse" />

More controversial comments from Kanye West are coming to light.

According to a report from TheWrap, the former billionaire referenced Nazis and blamed Rihanna for her own domestic abuse during a 2019 interview with David Letterman.

Multiple audience members who attended the taping of the comedian’s Netflix talk show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman” said West complained that the media always seemed to support women over men when misconduct allegations surfaced. He appeared to side with Chris Brown following his 2009 assault of Rihanna, suggesting that Rihanna must have done something to deserve what happened to her.

According to David Maldonado, who was in the theater for the taping, Ye stated that “Chris Brown’s career is basically over and you have Rihanna and everyone took her side.”

He went on to claim that she “must have done something to merit what happened to her.”

That wasn’t the only comment edited out of the interview. West apparently went on a rant about how an unnamed music executive friend got “MeToo-ed” and how West himself could be “MeToo-ed.” He also suggested that a Hollywood power structure was behind the #MeToo movement, which appeared to be a reference to Jewish people.

West repeated right-wing conspiracy theories during the Letterman interview, claiming that liberals treated anyone wearing Trump’s red MAGA hat “like they were Nazis.”

The “shocking” comments were largely removed from the final edit of the May 2019 episode that streamed on Netflix.

“It was shocking to see that Kanye West could share harmful alt-right beliefs, conspiracy theory after conspiracy and misogynistic beliefs about women for the majority of the interview and end up with an edit that removed all those items in favor of celebrity fluff content,” said audience member Noah Reich.

Worldwide Pants, Inc., the production company behind “My Next Guest,” told TheWrap that the episode was shot for more than five hours over two days before being edited down to 55 minutes.

“Nearly four years ago, in an interview for ‘My Next Guest,’ Kanye West discussed a wide range of topics with David Letterman, including, family, fatherhood, music and creativity,” the production company stated. “Kanye also told Dave that he had just been diagnosed with bipolar disorder six months earlier, which led to a personal discussion about mental illness, its stigma and treatment, and for the first time he talked about what he experiences when he has bipolar episodes.”

The statement continued, “Mr. West subsequently began an offensive rant about the MeToo movement. He also later spoke about liberals purportedly bullying Trump supporters, and about free speech being suppressed. These points were represented in the show, the producers went to great lengths to accurately present them, and Dave challenged him on each of these.”

This comes as West continues to face backlash for his anti-Semitic outbursts. Former TMZ staffer Van Lathan revealed that the Yeezy designer professed his love for Hitler and the Nazis during the same 2018 interview where he said slavery “sounds like a choice.” Adidas and Balenciaga are among the companies that have cut ties with him in the wake of the controversy.

RAPHAEL NAKACINDA CAN STILL BE PICKED FOR BREACHING THE ELECTORAL ACT: BETTER HE AVAILS HIMSELF BEFORE ECZ

THE report that Raphael Nakacinda is arrogantly snubbing the summon from Electoral commission of Zambia (ECZ) over his allegations of pre-marked papers during the just ended by-elections is unfortunate.

However, his snubbing has no consequences if the ECZ is to be serious in curbing lawlessness.

Nakacinda can sitting be picked by the Police for violating the Act and its code of conduct.

Section 123(1) of the electoral process Act No. 35 of 2016 stresses that *A police officer may, without warrant, arrest a
person and keep that person in custody where
*the person is found committing an offence or is reasonably* suspected of having committed an offence under this Act;

Section 107 (Electoral Code of conduct) Regulation 3(d) empowers the ECZ to censure acts done by leaders of political parties, candidates,
supporters, and Government and its organs, which are aimed at jeopardising elections or done in contravention of this Code;

Further, Regulation 11(2) bestows on the ECZ with the legal mandate to summon any erring stakeholder(s) or any person (s) in the Electoral Process.

It states, The Commission may where practicable to do so, summon any person contravening this Code and any voter, candidate or political party alleging a breach to appear before it Commission may where practicable to do so, summon any person contravening this Code and any voter, candidate or political party alleging a breach to appear before it

Clearly, NAKACINDA contravened the electoral code of conduct regulation 15(1) (c) which cautions that A person shall not make false, defamatory or inflammatory allegations concerning any person or political party in connection with an election commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding two
hundred thousand penalty units or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or to both

Therefore, NAKACINDA must substantiate his claims and allegations or dance to the music.

Criminality must be rid out of the electoral process and should not be masked by politics.

I AM NOT GOING TO ATTEND ECZ’S MEETING….meeting ECZ is same as meeting with UPND to discuss their misconduct – Nakacinda

I AM NOT GOING TO ATTEND ECZ’S MEETING

….meeting ECZ is same as meeting Imenda – Nakacinda

Lusaka…. Monday, November 7, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

PF Chairperson for Information and Publicity Raphael Nakacinda has declined an invitation by the ECZ to have a meeting with him over the allegations of electoral malpractice he made last week.

Hon Nakacinda has accused the ECZ of being more like a branch for the UPND.

He castigated the commission for giving themselves power to interpret the Constitution during the Kwacha and Kabushi Constituencies by elections.

Hon Nakacinda said this in Lusaka today when he addressed the media.

“I want to state that we are going to write to ECZ to clearly state that I am not going to attend that meeting because we find first of all even the correspondence itself adding to the misconduct of the ECZ,” he said.

“The ECZ in the recent past, beginning with Kabushi, Kwacha by elections where they took upon themselves and donated to themselves the powers they do not have to interpret the constitution. And they were found wanting by the constitutional court.”

He added that both ECZ and UPND held the same position over the two constituencies until court found them wanting.

Hon Nakacinda said sitting with the ECZ is the same as sitting with UPND’s officials.

He was supposed to meet the Commission today.

“They further went ahead at a point where the state stayed matters to proceed to disregard the stay in the last by elections. we have raised issues that concerns them. How can I then be expected to meet them to discuss matters that concern them and the ruling party? When the matters were taken to the constitutional court, in terms of the misconduct of the ECZ, the ruling party held the same view that the ECZ held until the court found them wanting. Clearly the ECZ of today is conducting itself as a branch of UPND,” he said.

“So to sit with ECZ is as good as sitting with Imenda or indeed sitting with any official of UPND to discuss their misconduct. And I think I will not want to dignify that letter and legitimize their misconduct. I am not going to attend.”

THERE IS NO SENSIBLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE CHINESE APPROACH- Fred M’membe

THERE IS NO SENSIBLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE CHINESE APPROACH

The new and revolutionary approach being taken by China to modernisation offers us in the poor world a new hope for development.

In a word, it offers all humanity a new hope for a more just, fair and humane civilisation, a new option for the modernisation of mankind. For us who are still shackled under neocolonialism, it offers an opportunity to set ourselves free and start to develop. It is not possible to develop under our current conditions of exploitation, marginalisation and neocolonial humiliation. But this, as we are already witnessing, will not be accepted or supported by those who for centuries have benefited, profited from our exploitation, marginalisation, subjugation and humiliation. This is because it will break their monopoly on the course the world takes.

This is a very big and important revolutionary move, initiative, being led by China. But whenever and wherever there’s a revolutionary move, initiative, there will always be a desperate counter-revolutionary move, initiative. And we must factor this in and prepare for it. It’s not going to bed of roses. Imperialism will fight against these revolutionary measures. China and its leadership will increasingly come under all sorts of attacks, provocations, sanctions and slander under this counter-revolutionary wave. And those from our poor world, who will try to follow the Chinese model, will also be ostracised and fought in all sorts of ways. We will be fought for trying to liberate ourselves from this neocolonialism the same way we were fought trying to free ourselves from classical colonialism.

This Chinese new approach to modernisation offers us a chance to truly free ourselves from centuries of exploitation, domination and humiliation. And because of its liberating nature it poses an existential threat to their hegemonic system.

Today, under the imperialist-imposed neoliberal system, the neocolonial plundering of our continent – Africa – continues, and is directly responsible for our people’s growing poverty, inequality, unemployment, and the destruction of our environment. European, Canadian, and Australian mining companies are siphoning off our natural resources. Our rich natural deposits, instead of bringing economic development to our people, have made them targets for manipulation by developed Western countries, leaving them with poverty, chaos, and a badly damaged ecosystem. The new approach being put forward by China, by contrast, redefines and de-stigmatises the concept of “modernisation” from a socialist and liberating perspective. The importance of the Chinese model of modernisation has been demonstrated by the amazing economic, political, and social developmental achievements of socialist China itself.

In 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded, its economy accounted for less than five per cent of the world’s total; its national income per capita was 20 per cent lower than that of India, and it ranked as the 11th poorest country in the world based on per capita PPP-adjusted GDP.

By 2021, China’s economy accounted for 18 per cent of the world’s and its per capita income was 2.7 times that of India. Today, China has fully eradicated absolute poverty, achieved universal nine-year compulsory education, and covered more than 95 per cent of its population with basic health insurance.

In 2021, the CPC launched initiatives to comprehensively promote rural revitalisation and solidly advance common prosperity. This ensures that the country’s rural population – 700 million people – with relatively low levels of income will benefit from economic development. I could wax lyrical about the beautiful and modern cities, the incredible public transport system – a good part of which is green – the world’s largest high-speed rail network, and so on.

When China began its reform and opening up in the 1980s, Deng Xiaoping’s slogan, “let some people get rich first” and the rapid growth of the private and foreign-invested economy, caused some of us to wonder whether China had deviated from the socialist line. The facts are now available to lay those doubts to rest. Deng Xiaoping also explained socialism this way: “Poverty is not socialism,” and, “Those who become rich first will lead those who become rich later to achieve common prosperity,” he said. Those ideas are becoming China’s reality today. From this decades-long process, we can see that generations of leaders of the CPC have taken up the mission of their respective times and continued the practice of enriching the country and strengthening the people.

China’s model of modernisation attaches importance not only to economic development, but also to the spiritual civilisation and moral development of the people. It may not be easy to see the moral level of a population in times of peace and plenty, but in the face of an emergency like a global epidemic, it is possible to see the state of a society’s spiritual civilisation. In the face of an epidemic that has claimed millions of lives globally – with more than a million in the United States alone – the ruling elite in the United States, the most developed country in the world, lied to its citizens, persuading them that the epidemic was over, while using insider information to make profits on the stock market. In contrast, the Chinese people have demonstrated a high level of morality in the face of the epidemic.

The CPC mobilised four million grassroots organisations – every residential community, the lowest level of society – to provide services to the people related to epidemic prevention and control. These included managing and organising food supplies, arranging large-scale nucleic acid testing, isolating and escorting infected people to hospitals, and regular visits to the elderly. In return, the Chinese people showed mutual trust, strict discipline, selflessness, and small personal sacrifices to dynamically clear the epidemic nationwide and safeguard people’s lives and production. This is the result of the spiritual civilisation inspired by and under the leadership and organisational capacity of the Communist Party of China.

Chinese modernisation is sustainable because it doesn’t plunder either other countries or nature. In the past decade, an amazingly short period of time, China has led the world in reversing the inevitable historical consequences of industrialisation. No other major country in human history has modernised to this level without invading and plundering other countries. It doesn’t make sense at all for our poor countries to ever think of following the impossible path of modernisation set by the United States. With 4.2 per cent of the world’s population, the United States accounts for 13 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions and 13.7 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels per capita – three times the global average. Even though a significant portion of United States manufacturing has moved to China, its per capita carbon emissions are still 67 per cent higher than China’s. If our poor countries were to use the United States as a benchmark for modernisation, the planet’s natural environment would be quickly overwhelmed as the process has already begun. The Western modernisation narrative concludes that many, if not all, our countries will not be able to modernise.

There have been desperate and malicious attempts to smear the Belt and Road Initiative as a debt trap for our poor countries, but the reality of our daily existence exposes these lies. China owns only 13 per cent of poor African countries’ debt; the average interest rate of Africa’s debt to China is only 2.7 per cent, while the average interest rate of Africa’s debt to Western private capital – 35 per cent of Africa’s total debt – is five per cent. China’s infrastructure investment in sub-Saharan Africa is more than twice that of Western countries combined; and China never imposes a political agenda on another country based on debt.

The West lends the money it plundered from our poor countries through institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. They then hold our poor countries hostage to a series of liberalising reforms that destroy the foundations of industrialisation in our poor countries as well as our social services like health and education. They are the ones to blame for the constantly expanding debt trap of our poor countries.

Clearly, the Chinese model of modernisation can lead to successful and peaceful new forms of solidarity and cooperation. It can provide our poor countries with ideas and frameworks and inspire us to create our own new indigenous development models.

HH Would Still Be Living In Kalingalinga Compound If FTJ Chiluba Had Not Given Him Privatisation Job- Sean Tembo

0

He writes:

SUMMARY OF NEW DAWN’S PERFORMANCE TO DATE

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Agriculture Sector – farming inputs not yet delivered as at 6th November despite heavy rains in progress. FISP beneficiaries reduced from more than 3 million to less than 1 million. More than 60 percent of farmers who sold their crops to Government in the last farming season have still not been paid up to now. Farming inputs under FISP will not be delivered to cooperatives but will instead be dropped at the nearest boma. FISP beneficiaries will then have to arrange their own transport for distances as far as 50 kilometers.

2. Mining Sector – Government still has not made a decision on whether to continue the transaction of buying Mopani from Glencore or not. Similarly, Government has still not made a decision of whether to continue with the liquidation of KCM or not. This indecision is costing productivity and jobs in the mining sector. Additionally, Government has decided to engage an international firm called Rothschild at an estimated cost of more than $50 million to provide it with advice on how to proceed with Mopani. Government has further engaged another international firm called Rand Merchant Bank, at an estimated cost of more than $30 million to provide financial advisory services in the search of an equity partner in KCM. Suffice to mention that these advisory services jobs can easily be done by many Zambian firms, all of which were sidelined in preference for foreign firms. You may wish to remember that the FTJ Government entrusted local Zambians including a then young man called Hakainde Hichilema to assist with the privatisation process. If FTJ had not given Hakainde and opportunity to participate in the nation’s privatisation process, more likely than not, Hakainde would have still been living in Kalingalinga compound today. But you fast-forward to this day, and the empowered Hakainde is now President, but instead of empowering other Zambians the way he himself was empowered by FTJ, he prefers to give simple financial advisory services work to Rothschild and Rand Merchant Bank. Indeed, how selfish and unpatriotic of President Hakainde Hichilema. And yet, the tax holidays to the mines continue.

3. Health Sector – still no medicines or consumables. Since this countries independence in 1964, we have always struggled with our health Sector, especially with regard to having medicines consistently. However, the kind of drug shortages we are witnessing today is unprecedented. Unlike previous drug shortages which have been in selected parts of the country at any given time, the current drug shortages are across the entire country, even in military hospitals. And unlike previous drug shortages where it was only the sophisticated drugs that were not in supply, today’s drug shortages are such that even Panadol is not there. Even gloves and syringes are not there. And the worst part of it all is that there does not appear to be any solution in sight. On 24th March 2022, President Hakainde Hichilema stormed the Ministry of Health to express his disappointment over continued drug shortages, and after a meeting and a photoshoot with Health Minister Silvia Masebo, the President promised the Zambian people that going forward, drug shortages will be a thing of the past. Eight months later, drug shortages are even worse and yet just a few days ago, the President was praising Silvia Masebo as a very hardworking Minister at an event at State House. The question is who is fooling who?

4. Education Sector – more than three months since additional teachers were recruited, more than 50 percent of them have not been paid a single salary, and yet they have been deployed. In the first month the Treasury gave the excuse that these other teachers had not provided accurate bank details. But three months down the line, it appears that the Treasury has run out of excuses. These teachers are afraid to speak out publicly for fear of victimization, so they just die inside. The question which the Zambian people must ask is how many times has President Hakainde Hichilema and his Ministers and Permanent Secretaries missed getting paid their monthly salaries? The answer is none. They always get their salaries and travelling allowances on time. So why should they then punish teachers by not paying them for three months? Isn’t that a standard definition of selfishness?

5. Law and Order – The Zambian people largely voted for Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND because they were fed up with the political violence and and lawlessness that prevailed under the PF regime. However, despite President Hakainde Hichilema’s empty verbal assurances, there is increasing political violence perpetrated by UPND, with no action by Lemmy Kajoba and his officers. While visiting NDC leader; Saboi Imboela at Kabwata Police a few days ago, Mr. Jackson Silavwe a leader of a political party called Golden Party of Zambia (GPZ) was attacked by UPND cadres who had travelled all the way from Monze to come and camp at Kabwata Police Station for the sole purpose of attacking anyone who would come to give solidarity to Ms. Saboi Imboela. A day after this incident, Mr. Lovemore Phiri, a journalist at Passme Radio in Petauke was attacked and assaulted by UPND cadres who stormed the radio station because the journalist was taking phone calls from surrounding farmers who were complaining about lack of delivery of farming inputs. This is unprecedented even during the PF regime. And yet the UPND leader who is also Republican President; Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has not condemned these acts of violence among many. Similarly, the Zambia Police who have now become an extension of the UPND Party, have not made any arrests in these assault cases.

6. Indeed, there is no doubt in my mind that President Hakainde Hichilema is a wanna-be dictator. Whether he succeeds to become a fully fledged tinpot dictator or not will be dependent on the ability of the good citizens of this Republic to stand up to his dictatorial ambitions. And like all wannabe dictators, he only cares about his self interests and does not care about the plight of the wider citizenry. That is why Hakainde does not care about leaving out more than 2 million citizens from FISP, or telling those beneficiaries who are fortunate enough to remain on FISP to go and collect their fertilizer more than 50 kilometers away. It is Hakainde’s selfishness that makes him to give $3.2 billion in tax holidays while borrowing $1.4 billion from the IMF, as well as give multimillion dollar advisory services contracts for Mopani and KCM to Rothschild and Rand Merchant Bank while ignoring capable and competent local advisory firms, when he himself was empowered by FTJ and liberated from Kalingalinga compound by allowing him to participate in the privatisation process. If FTJ had contracted Rothschild and RMB to assist with the privatisation process, Hakainde Hichilema would still have been living in Kalingalinga compound today, probably running a chain chibuku outlets, given his alleged entrepreneurial prowess. But despite being empowered himself, he is averse to empowering others. Indeed country men and women, it is our collective duty as bonafide citizens of this Republic to stand up to this selfish bully that we call our Republican President. If he wins and manages to become a fully fledged dictator, then we are all doomed. If the people win, then democracy, rule of law, selflessness and competence may be restored in the management of national affairs. The choice is ours to make.

State House Must Publish The Contract They Have With Tony Blair’s Institute- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

STATE HOUSE MUST PUBLISH THE CONTRACT THEY HAVE WITH TONY BLAIR’S INSTITUTE

“Who is paying for Tony Blair’s Consultancy to Zambia?”

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair is a very controversial figure.

As the Chilcot Report, the Iraq Inquiry, chaired by Sir John Chilcot, set up to look at decision-making in relation to the invasion of Iraq, exposed Blair’s lies and criminal conduct in the Iraq war while he served as Prime Minister, to the millions he collected in commercial fees from Arab states while he was engaged as an USA/UN/EU Middle-East Envoy.

It is therefore shocking that Tony Blair is allowed into State Houses of African states without due regard to his controversial status.

In Zambia, since the election of President Hakainde Hichilema, Tony Blair is a regular at State House.

Tony Blair, through “The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change’, has put up a commercial proposal to build capacity for Hichilema’s Government.

The capacity is to allegedly support President Hichilema’s Government with strategy, policy and delivery of development.

To this end, some of Tony Blair’s staff from the Institute are already in Zambia and have unfettered access to the Smart Zambia Project, Ministry of Finance and to State House.

OUR DEMANDS

Government must be publish the terms and conditions of this agreement as the access of foreigners to Zambia’s State House, inside security and development initiatives hinge on endangering the sovereignty of our country.

Government must make full disclosure of who is paying for this Tony Blair’s consultancy. In Zambia the procurement of any services or consultancy must be regulated by the Zambia Public Procurement Act.

We are concerned as Tony Blair’s involvement in State House, like that of Brenthurst Foundation, raises serious security and other issues.

Is it a mining firm paying for this consultancy? Is it a private foundation from South Africa? Is it the Zambian Government?

Is it the reasons that our tax policies and large-scale commercial projects are being hijacked by these entities?

The Zambian Government must publish the Contract with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change as a matter of obligation and a matter of good public policy.

To Indicate That UPND Won In Mwense Because Of Violence Is Sheer Nonsense And Has No Justifiable Basis- Former PF Mwense MP Jacob Chongo

0

Former Mwense MP, Jacob Chongo analyses Mwense By-election

THE FALL OF PF IN MWENSE

I have quietly listened to all sorts of analyses, postmortems and other comments from Patriotic front members and sympathizers as reasons to why PF has lost the Council Chairperson by-election in Mwense district .

On the other hand the pro Upnd have also advanced their own reasons.

Well, people are entitled to their opinions. As for me, I too have my own reasons, and therefore have resolved to share with those who may care to appreciate. Because I choose to be open and frank, I risk offending certain individuals and groupings of individuals.

To all those I may offend , I ask of your tolerance. To those who care to know the truth, I hope they may learn something and use this to avert future disappointments or use it for their benefit.

First and foremost, let us remind ourselves as to : HOW DID THIS BY-ELECTION IN MWENSE COME ABOUT? Hard to be reminded on, WE LOST OUR LATE BROTHER AND COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON, HUMPHREY KAPAPULA in a suspected gruesome murder case whose investigations are still ongoing.

This death was painful and brought with it a number of speculations from our people. Let us be reminded also that, Just months before 2021 general elections , the elder brother to the late Council chairperson, BOOKER KAPAPULA, who was one of the front runner contenders to stand on the PF ticket for MWENSE Constituency also died in what was rumoured to be a case of POISONING which I can’t confirm.

However, this death too had some unexplained circumstances and brought a lot of talks. You like it or not, these two deaths of blood brothers were in the minds of many in Mwense district, particularly mwense constituency and had some perceptions to them. Political perceptions were not ruled out. This clearly explains that certain individuals of political nature could have been suspected to be behind.

Right or wrong, the patriotic front party(pf) needed to be careful in fronting certain individuals or groups of people who may have been “suspected “to be culprits of these unfortunate deaths. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the effort of the party, to try and investigate if the party itself or some of its associates could be thought to be behind. Seems the party never cared, a case that obviously was interpreted by many, that the party was not sympathetic to the family, friends and supporters of our departed colleagues.

To some, they may even have seen some of the perceived suspects being even in the forefront to pick the next candidate for the PF. In that case, would anyone expect support to go to a chosen candidate or the party itself? I doubt.

Colleagues, I have kept this for long, but I choose to come out: I was the first and pioneer Pf MP for MWENSE Constituency in 2006 to 2011, when Hon Mabumba took over, following my being kicked out of the party because of the NCC sins that I together with 25 other members of parliament who defied the party and attended the National Constitutional Conference (NCC).

I got adopted by the MMD in 2011 but did not retain my seat. 2014 1st August, President Sata phoned me and asked that I rejoin the party that I contributed to. Sadly, president Sata died a few months later. Hon Chishimba Kambwili and Hon Mumbi Phiri even invited me to be part of the welcoming reception for Hon Malanji and a Prince Mushili who were joining the PF from MMD, at CHANGACHANGA GROUNDS IN KWACHA CONSTITUENCY, KITWE.

From then, I was a very active pf member once more. I continued to do what I was positively capable of doing, especially in Mufulira where I have had a base.

I was called upon in the 2015 presidential by-election to go and help in Mwense where things looked bad. I did using my own resources, though it was evident the owner of the constituency was uncomfortable. I was summoned by Mufulira leadership to help in Kankoyo Constituency where things looked bad for our candidate, Hon Mushimba, in 2016. We delivered.

In all this, I used my own resources but just a little that the candidate managed, for fuel. Calls to help in Mwense were loud and I did what I could. Again I seemed not to be welcome.

2021, I was appointed vice chairperson for Mufulira Mobilization team and also a member of the Luapula provincial mobilisation team. Friends, I did all I could in the two provinces but using my own resources. I persevered because of the love I had for the party. Yes, honestly Mabumba this time called me to go and help, but unfortunately, failed to go because I was required to source for my own resources. Surprisingly, my other colleagues that were asked to help were provided for in everything, including vehicles and the required logistics. Honourables Chitotela, Chilufya and Chilangwa including our the SG, Davies Mwila were very much aware but……….. .However, I always encouraged my followers and supporters to be there with me, for Pf.

In all this period, Pf was in power and had every resource and opportunity to help, but I ONLY DIED FOR THE PARTY. Colleagues, I have been one of the few people that have been respected by the people I was privileged to serve, after so many years. No election comes in Mwense without my people asking me which way they go. I have accordingly guided. Civil servants that were in Mwense the time I served have always been with me and have been supportive. But unfortunately, I have been an enemy of the leadership of the party that I served with.

All I am saying colleagues is that: IT WILL BE SUICIDAL FOR THE PARTY LEADERSHIP TO IGNORE INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN ANY GIVEN AREA AND THINK THEY CAN DO IT ALONE. A GIID LEADER IS ONE WHO EMBRACES EVERYONE, BECAUSE TRUE LEADERSHIP IS THAT WHICH PREVAILS IN THE MIDST OF PROBLEMS, including the people you may not like.

To be honest, no anyone among PF leaders is capable of convincing the people, if they ignore the owners of the area. How can Hon Kambwili, Mundubile, Kafwaya or Chilangwa campaign in MBERESHI WARD FOR INSTANCE, AND FORGET TO INVITE PEOPLE LIKE HONOURABLE SAMUEL CHITONGE, who served them and lived with them as village mates?

How can strangers be belived by LUFUBU WARD voters in Mwansabombwe Constituency , leaving out Hon Chitonge, the former MP and a faithful follower of the PF. All this colleagues is coming from hatred and mistrust against former leaders and selfishness by those involved because they don’t want to give a Kwacha to those they think can takeover, if they expose them.

Let me warn PF leadership : If you won’t throw out selfishness, feeling of being important to those you need to be humble to, YOU MUST FORGET GETTING BACK TO LEADERSHIP OF THIS COUNTRY.

The MWENSE loss is painful yes but it is obvious. No single family in Mwense is more important than all the families in Mwense district. All are equal and equal stakeholders and must be treated the same way. No rich person of Mwense district shall be allowed to impose themselves on the people of Mwense. If some of the leaders of PF do benefit from the riches of some individuals in Mwense district, who may threaten political lives of others using their riches, better they be reminded that the poor Zambians are more powerful United and shall influence each other in poverty and use every means to choose poor leaders out of themselves. People must be respected for who they are.

I am a believer in the powers of the poor. President FTJ Chiluba, President Sata had tutored me enough how to respect the poor. 2003, president Chiluba helped me to know how the poor can triumph over the rich: I participated in the Pebe Kabesa ward by-election, in the village of the two fallen heroes, the Kapapula brothers, when we won the first Pf Councillorship in Mwense and the whole Luapula province, if not country wide, other than the MP seat win by Mpankata Musonda. We beat the rich MMD. I was there when the poor miners influenced the election of the late KAB MANDA in kantanshi constituency.

I was the constitution Secretary for Kantanshi constituency when President Sata taught us how to defeat the rich MMD and it’s rich Candidate, Mr Kalimanshi, in a bye election after the demise of KAB Manda, when Chairman Simbeye and myself, adopted Hon Mukanga Yamfwa and had him elected as MP for Kantanshi Constituency. I have enough lessons on how not to mistreat or look down on poor people .

These poor people always look for people to give them a message of hope. That is what matters. We shall not accept where our people are enticed on temporal financial benefits. Let us strive to fight for them of better lives. in case people didn’t know, the candidate for Upnd didn’t even have adequate resources to see him through the Constituency where Pf easily reached. Are you not surprised why in such areas, like Nkanga ward where upnd hardly went and Kapela ward in MUSANGU village, and the ward where the murdered Kapapula came from, all in Mwense Constituency, wards that PF have been winning with eyes closed, this time they were shocked. The difference of votes in the three wards combined, are the difference separating pf and Upnd. If PF have to go a long way, let the leadership humble themselves like president Sata did. Let Pf respect everyone that suffered for PF. People are not looking for favors and money which you failed to give when you were swimming in money with cadres that never suffered for the party. Just respect and recognize those you neglected because they have a following that can silently cry to them as to what next…… . Politicians have long lives, they never die until they die. Wonder how Hon VJ Mwanga and Hon Munkombwe remained relevant in the eyes of real political leaders? Wonder how our RB was surprisingly raised from the “dead” and became Vice President and later President? Everyone in politics is important, and every issue in politics need careful scrutiny before you choose to ignore them. Lastly, YES, WE AND I ABBOUR VIOLENCE AND VIOLENCE MUST NOT GET ITS ROOTS IN ZAMBIAN POLITICS. I regret a few incidences reported during these gone by elections, including Mwense. BUT TO INDICATE THAT UPND WIN IN MWENSE BECAUSE OF VIOLENCE IS SHEER NONSENSE AND HAS NO JUSTIFIABLE BASIS. LET THE NEW COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON GET TO WORK AND WORK FOR OUR PEOPLE WITHOUT HINDRANCE. WE WANT DEVELOPMENT NOW! I hope I haven’t offended, but I am happy I speak my mind.

The Project targeting the fuel in TAZAMA Pipeline

The Project targeting the fuel in TAZAMA Pipeline

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

TAZAMA has a constant dead stock of comingled crude oil that lie in the pipeline. This is to enable the crude oil to be pumped from Da-es-Salaam into the 1,710 kilometres pipeline to be available at INDENI Refinery in Ndola almost instaneously.

This dead stock is worth over $90million and together with that in the tanks in Ndola comes to $200million ( it’s usually a 3months supply).

Agro Fuel Investments Limited has been awarded to supply and deliver 100,000 metric tonnes of low sulpher gas oil (LSG) and 15,000 metric tonnes of kerosene for the pipeline conversion project.

The idea is push-out the crude oil deadstock worth millions of dollars, allow INDENI to process it, empty the pipeline and prepare the pipeline, clean it with kerosene for conversion to carry finished products.

The contract sum is worth K374,244,500.00 ( $51million).

Questions;

  1. Is TAZAMA ready to carry finished products? Government has just finished a huge investment to rehabilitate TAZAMA and has done 700km so far. The project was to install a wider pipeline to increase its capacity and restore its integrity.

The project also installed modern pump stations along the pipeline.

However the rest of of 1,000km remain unrehabilitated with integrity issues. Without finishing the rehabilitation of TAZAMA, can such a pipeline carry finished products if it had integrity issues with heavier comingled crude oil?

  1. Many assessments reports and studies have all revealed the dangers of carrying finished products as the pipeline cannot be properly policed or security issues to prevent sabotage, vandalism and theft of finished products may be difficult to stop.
  2. The plans to convert TAZAMA Pipeline into a finished products pipeline require approval from both Zambia and Tanzania as it is co-owned by both countries.
  3. How sure are we that the target is not just a short-term project to raid the deadstock in the pipeline which is worth over $200,000million?
  4. Is this the reason Government is talking of pipelines from Namibia and Angola, projects that may take a decade to complete, while clearly abandoning TAZAMA?
  5. Transporters and truckers that benefit from the current arrangement of transporting fuel on trucks need to be managed in relation to the security of TAZAMA.
  6. The contract, although open, has been awarded to a company associated with President Hakainde Hichilema. Like Alpha Commodities in Fertiliser, Agro Fuels is in the news as the proprietors are business associates with the President. Recently, Agro Fuels was compensated $26million by Ministey of Justice over an out-of- court settlement regarding the cancelled concession of Mpulungu Harbour.

CONCLUSION

Speaking to industry experts reveals that this appears to be one-off project targeting the crude oil deadstock lying in the pipeline. It is clear that Government has demonstrated since 2019, that it can run the fuel sector without TAZAMA and INDENI.

So this is a raid of the deadstock!

Industry experts have recommended that we invest in INDENI REFINERY and convert it to a full refinery so that it can process any crude oil from Saudi Arabia, Angola, Nigeria or Iran. The comingled crude required under current arrangements has sufficed so so far but a long-term solution to INDENI Refinery must be invested in.

TAZAMA and INDENI are strategic nayional assets and the careless approach to abandon these facilities, investments built at great cost, puts the country at fragile and energy risk. And associated industries that benefited from by-products of INDENI such as Ndola Energy and Ndola Lime are dead and the cost of producing copper has risen as refineries have to import heavy fuels required in the process.

This contract therefore serves short-term interests to provide cheap fuel to the country but may render the TAZAMA Pipeline moribund as security issues may not allow or may sabotage a commercial transportation of finished products using the pipeline.

My success is always based on having an African Striker. Without an African Striker i feel like i won’t succeed- Mourinho

MOURINHO’S SUCCESS BASED ON AFRICANS

“My success is always based on having an African Striker. Without an African Striker i feel like i won’t succeed. My belief about African Strikers started with Benni Mccarthy at FC Porto whereby He scored more than 20 league goals to help me & FC Porto to win the Portuguese League Title . In that same season He scored very important goals for me in the Uefa Champions League that helped our careers to be well known in Europe by winning my first Champions League as a Coach “

” From Portugal to Chelsea in England, i find Didier Drogba. He was a great African weapon to win with me an English Premiership. I wanted Benni Mccarthy to join me to partner Didier Drogba up front but at that time He was at Blackburn Rovers and He was the only hit man there. So they refused to give us Benni Mccarthy no matter the Offer i put on the Table “

” From Chelsea to inter Milan, there i wanted to win the Uefa Champions League so badly. But I only had two Ghanaian midfielders and that was not enough for me to win Champions League as i was dominating the league only. So I sat down and thought hard about having an African Striker again. I approached FC Barcelona and they willingly sold to me the best signing of my Career Samuel E’too and the same season with Eto’o I won Champions League”

“from Inter Milan to Real Madrid. There at Real Madrid I had all talents but the reason I didn’t win the Champions League is because I had no African Striker. I tried Emmanuel Adebayour but it was a loan move so Madrid does not like to use loaned Players.”

” Brazil have Great Strikers, but if you look at them they are of African origin. I always teach new coaches on my coaching facilities that you must always have an African Striker in your team . “

“perfect example at Manchester United they don’t believe much in African Strikers, no wonder i didn’t enjoy much success there. Some strikes gives you league titles but African Strikers gives you Champions
LEAGUE TITLES ”😯✊🏿

It is not a trend but a fact todate that once a party loses power in Zambia, it does not come back into power

TRUTH BE TOLD: OUR EDITORIAL

There has been talks in some circles that the Patriotic Front Party will bounce back in 2026 and the people behind these talks are those who have failed to accept and move on with their lives without PF as their financier after looting from government.

It is not a trend but a fact todate that once a party loses power in Zambia, it does not come back into power and even in terms of being politically active.

When the party (UNIP) at the time of Zambia’s independence got voted out by Zambians, it did not go back but the name lives. When MMD lost power, it never got back and these are political parties that stood the storm for years and years and under serious leadership as they had their vision carriers around.

This pattern cannot be rewritten and we are optimistic that in no uncertain terms, PF will equally diminish however, what is even more interesting and what should worry the handful still following it, is that this party will go into extinction faster than any other former ruling party and the reason is simple: Since the demise of its founder, there has never been anyone to carry on the mantle and if anything, it was further degraded.

Yesterday, 24 places of Zambia held elections and we want to call these as mini-general elections. Why? Because they were held across the nine (9) of the ten (10) provinces of Zambia.

These elections have shown the real life situation on the ground and exposed how PF has fast dwindled and will never ever bounce back to power.

For starters, Zambians yesterday were voting in 9 provinces namely: Lusaka, Eastern, Northern, Luapula, Southern, Western, Central, Copperbelt and Muchinga.

In these nine (9) provinces, UPND won seats in eight (8 ) and this is great indeed by any measure.

A very indispensable and indisputable fact now is that the UPND has penetrated what were, just a year ago, PF strongholds. If a Political party that was in government a year ago and has a lot of money or indeed is being yearned for by voters, the PF would not have lost embarrassingly especially with those mockery songs slapped on President Hakainde Hichilema by Given Lubinda.

One interesting thing again is that, Hakainde Hichilema didn’t go to all these provinces to go and campaign but one thing clear is that his works are speaking volumes and Zambians can see.

Surely, what would stop a parent to vote for free education, his or her child being employed among the 30, 000 and 11, 000 workers? Who would not vote for a President that is daily working to resolve the economic challenges left by a non reasoning party?

At this stage, it is time for the opposition especially the PF to rethink their dreams about being elected again after their 2021 debacle. It doesn’t matter who will lead this party but every one of them is tainted by their bad governance and corruption which saw Zambians not vote for them.

How do you justify a loss in your own bedroom? People are no longer buying those tribalism cheap talks but appreciating that within a short time, Hakainde has started changing the face of Zambia.

Not long ago, PF losing in Luapula, Northern and Eastern provinces would be taken as a taboo but this is now common as people have opened their eyes. Smell the coffee bane!

As the local adage says: Akabwelela kalalya! Meaning, surely you can’t go back to someone who nearly killed you because no matter their enticement, surely, they could be planning to even kill you by strangling your neck. Don’t go back to your vomit! Amalushi!

For now! PF is dead! PF was buried! Anyone having wishful thoughts about it, may not only be wasting their time but also giving us the reason to conclude that indeed Zambia is short of leaders to offer reasonable social, political and economic checks and balances to President Hakainde Hichilema and yet Chilufya Tayali and others are trying hard to run their groups.

PF should choose a party President who is known nationwide-Steve Chungu

0

Former Patriotic Front (PF) Luanshya Member of Parliament Steve Chungu has said the PF should choose a party President who is known nationwide and can be easily sold to the people ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

And Mr. Chungu, the former PF Luanshya District Chairman, said the people of Zambia are looking for alternative leadership because the UPND Government has failed to meet their expectations.

The PF is preparing to choose a party President at a convention that is expected to be held in March next year.

PF presidential aspirants include Emmanuel Mwamba, Mutotwe Kafwaya, Emmanuel Mwamba, Chishimba Kambwili, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, Brian Mundubile and Greyford Monde.

These aspirants have already filed their nominations for the PF presidency before acting Secretary General Nixon Chilangwa.

Commenting on the race to the top PF position, Mr. Chungu said PF should pick a party President to help them give a message of hope again to the Zambian people.

He said the PF President should be able to give people confidence on matters of the economy, Christian values, job creation and investment.

“I just wish them (PF) well. I wish all the Presidential candidates the best and that the members should open their eyes and pick the best candidate amongst the eight. They should pick a party President to help them give a message of hope again to the Zambians people. They should also take advantage of the current government’s mistakes and unfulfilled promises if they are to make the Zambian people trust them again. They should talk about cadrelism never to show its face again, the violence never to show its face again, the corruption never to show its face again.”

“Those are the things people expected to hear and see even from the current government. But these things have again shown their ugly when people were trying to say oh now we have a messiah but people have started regretting now that they made a mistake by bringing the UPND. That is why people are looking back at PF. Had they UPND performed well in the last one year, the PF was going to be finished now because the UPND has also failed to perform to the expectations of the people, that is why the people of Zambia are looking for another option. The Zambian people have decided to look for another option,” Mr. Chungu said.

“I have talked about someone who is going to give the Zambian people hope in all aspects. One, the economy, Christian values, job creation, investment, somebody who is going to give the Zambian people hope that there will be more money in people’s pockets again because there is no money in circulation right now. There is absolutely nothing. That is why you have even seen the artificial drop of the American dollar or the foreign currencies that are artificial because there is less money in circulation. So there is no competition for the foreign exchange. The gaining of the Kwacha is not there to stay, it is going to crush, the Kwacha is going to crush very soon,” he said.

Mr. Chungu, who resigned from PF last year, declined to reveal his preferred candidate for the PF presidential race.

“I wouldn’t want to get involved at this point in the matter of who is the best candidate. Those are internal politics of political parties and individuals who are vying for these positions. I think for these individuals to seek that position I think they have got all the confidence to win. But I have said we need somebody to give us hope. Yes the party President must be sealable with a national appeal and with those other factors I earlier mentioned. They should give us hope because we have lost hope in UPND. We have lost it,” Mr. Chungu said.

How to become a Tyrant- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

Sunday: How to become a Tyrant

I flipped the TV channels this morning and landed on my current favourite docu-series yet again—´How to Become a Tyrant, a must watch folks.
This time around they are discussing how Tyrants or authoritarian rulers use the ´torture tactic´ to continue a strong hold on their nations of kingdoms.

Saddam Hussein for instance tortured one of his former officials to near death, brought his wife and daughters in his jail cell and warned him that would order prison guards to rape his wife and daughters in his presence if he did not confess to betraying the Great Leader. Horrific but true.

Sometimes torture came into use, electric shocks, or sleep deprivation during Cambodia’s tyrannical ruler Pol Pot, but torture, nevertheless always came.

You punish your enemies enough to ´not kill them´ they must know you are the boss.
In modern days, studies show that killing or subjecting people to physical torture has pretty much ended as human rights awareness rises.
These days despots use tactics such as holding enemies in jail for long periods without trial, arrest as many enemies as possible and sometimes use money.

Deprive enemies of their hard-earned money so they tow your line because after all, a hungry man is a subservient man.

He who controls the truth

The truth is rather inconvenient for Tyrants according to the Play Book in my fav doc series.
For Tyrants to rule, they often must create their own history and control the future like Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin completely re-invented himself.
Stalin was born Loseb Besarionis Jughashvili in 1872and died of a massive haemorrhage stroke in 1953 aged 74.
His new chosen name Stalin means ´Steel´ in Russian, he is known as the father of photoshop, long before photoshopping was even invented, a story for another page.

Like Stalin, German´s Adolf Hitler erased the past of Japan´s victory all over German to rebuild a new cult following. He is perhaps the best-known Tyrant, millions mostly Jews died on his watch before he finally fell at the Battle of Berlin, killed himself and was burnt to ashes after being doused in petrol, identified only through his dental remains.

Destroy God First.

As a Tyrant, you don’t really like competition, so you take away things that ´destruct´ people’s attention from you like religion or God.
Its important to take God out of the equation and create your own story like Stalin did with ´Marxism and Lenninsm´in the Play book, including creating new folk heroes that are not necessarily religious leaders like Jesus Christ or God.
“When you replace the church with the state, your truth becomes divine” according to the Tyrant Play Book.

The Colonel Muammar Ghaddafi

Muamar Ghaddafi especially was a master at tyranny, travelling to foreign countries and sleeping in a Bedouin tent as a way of showing the ordinary people he was a man of the people.
He ruled the oil rich desert nation for 42 years until he was captured, sodomised with a bayonet, and brutally shot to death, so bad, even Amnesty International (AI) was disgusted.

He succeeded to dominate by restricting the rights of his enemies, punishing them constantly and cowing them into submission. No one was spared but he was reported to be hugely loved like most dictators are idolised their subjects.

Oh, by the way, Tyrants must have a ´great´ project or catch phrase to remain in office and immortal. The Great Wall, or bridge.
Hitler built the Auto Bahn Ghaddafi, created a river in the middle of the desert and wrote the Green Book, the Libyan ´bible. ´
According to the Play Book, Tyrants are often seen as ´omnipotent´ by those that idolise them. Omnipotent means they are powerful and flawless, like deities. No one must disagree with them.
For this reason, they manipulate states institution to meet their ends at all costs.

The way Tyrants end up

In Uganda, Dictator Id Amin killed Anglican Bishop Janani Luwum in 1977 for refusing to tone down in political rhetoric, Amin instead faked a car accident again.

Around the same time Amin killed two American journalists that had travelled to Uganda to interview the expelled Indians.
After having them shot dead in cold blood, Amin had their car rolled over a cliff to make it look like an accident.
Amin died in exile at a hospital in Jedda when wife number four and other family members unplugged the life support system.
Adolf Hitler died aged 56 years in 1945 after shooting himself, German forces doused him in petrol and gutted him.

Why do ordinary Citizen’s gel around Tyrants?

German sociologist Max Weber, one of the founders of sociology, developed the concept of ‘charismatic authority’ – a ‘certain quality of an individual personality, by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with ´supernatural´, ´superhuman´, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities’ according to studies.
´Charismatic leaders´ in your society or neighbourhood, inspire ´devotion, and are regarded as prophetic figures by their followers´ according to Weber.

Weber’s insights deepen Plato’s sketchy account. ´The rising tyrant has a special, almost magical aura. His followers believe that he can work miracles and transform their lives. ´
But how does this happen? What is it that induces otherwise rational people to yield to adopt such dangerously unrealistic views? To explain it, we need to dig deeper.

In Vienna, Sigmund Freud was thinking like Weber around the same time.
Freud argued that those who are attracted to authoritarian leaders idealise them. The leader is seen as an ´exemplary, heroic human being shorn of every serious flaw. ´

Its all in The Play Book if you flip the channel right on your Netflix. There´s almost without exception the end of Tyrants in this documentary, badly.

IF THE GOVERNMENT IS “ NEW DAWN” LET IT DAWN THROUGH ALL GOVERNANCE INSTITUTIONS – CISCA

IF THE GOVERNMENT IS “ NEW DAWN” LET IT DAWN THROUGH ALL GOVERNANCE INSTITUTIONS – CISCA

By Kombe Chimpinde Mataka

CIVIL Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) has demanded that sections of the Penal Code pertaining to defamation be repealed.

In a statement, CiSCA chairperson Judith Mulenga called for an urgent repeal, particularly sections 191 to 193 and relegating them to civil law.

“The decriminalisation of defamation will not only strengthen the freedoms in our Bill of Rights but will also bring it in line with international human rights principles and standards. The criminal libel provided in the Penal Code is inimical to the enjoyment and exercise of some key fundamental freedoms and have no place in a modern democracy such as ours, and therefore should be expunged from the criminal code,” she said.

“Laws do not confer human rights and some laws are inimical to the protection of human rights and it is the responsibility of every truly democratic government to repeal such laws to bring them in line with the human rights standards and not to let human rights be subjected to such punitive laws.”

Mulenga said deprivation of liberty now seems to be the last resort in progressive democracies.

“Deprivation of liberty is now the last resort in all progressive democracies. Besides, case studies have shown that criminal libel tends to disadvantage the powerless in society. A case in point was the jailing of Chellah Tukuta in his criminal libel case reported by the then minister honourable Dora Siliya. Didn’t our President pardon him and have him released from his two years prison sentence?” Mulenga asked.

“One individual being injured by another person’s utterances should not be a national security issue drawing a huge outlay of security human resources and ruling party cadres at the disposal of such matters. As Zambians we were very clear on such matters on the 21st of August 2021. We were tired of arbitrary arrests of opposition political party leaders, and persons connected or perceived to be connected to opposition political parties and tired of a police service that placed itself at the service of the then ruling party members and those connected to it.

We still have the recording of one former presidential aide urging the then Inspector General of Police not to release one opposition political party leader for a ‘treason case,’ that went nowhere! Why are we still in this roundabout?”

She said it is a fact that if anybody connected to the opposition was reporting defamation to the police, the police would not swing into action.

Mulenga said CiSCA expected serious legal reforms from the current government, going by what they suffered while in opposition.

“The most they would have done is to advise the complainant to sue the other party. Why overhaul the police high command in national interest if the new command is going to ‘serve’ the nation in the same biased manner? The government might as well recall all the national interest retired police officers to serve their remaining terms of employment,” she said. “And that trick of disappearing from the police stations when a legal obligation of signing police bonds is required is so tiresome, unoriginal, and quite frankly boring.

Besides, why do the police insist on only civil servants signing on behalf of suspected persons when there is no legal backing for this practice and when they know that no civil servant would readily sign a police bond on behalf of a politically connected accused person? From the ruling party manifesto and the President’s speeches, we expected a transformative government. Now we are no longer expecting it but demanding it.”

Mulenga urged the government to prove in its conduct that there is indeed a new dawn.

“If the government is ‘new dawn’ let it ‘dawn’ through all governance institutions and structures right down to the lowest grassroot level. We cannot have a dawn in some section of our governance and nocturnal activities in others. As CiSCA we have always suspected that the President’s people have not yet or have refused to buy into his vision,” said Mulenga.

“How else would one explain that at this time when there are pertinent matters that the people are grappling with and which we assume has the President’s total focus such as the delayed agricultural inputs and the rising costs of living, the person who is supposed to help the President explain the challenges to the people is busy distracting the nation with something he can discreetly take care of through a civil procedure?”

WORLD’S BIGGEST EMERALD UNVEILED IN LUFWANYAMA.

WORLD’S BIGGEST EMERALD UNVEILED IN LUFWANYAMA.

Lufwanyama-based Kagem Mining continued to put Zambia’s gemstones at the forefront of world demand this week as it unveiled a giant 37kg cluster of emeralds.

The team’s find – named the Kafubu Cluster – is expected to be the most expensive single emerald piece ever sold by the company when it comes up for auction this month, generating foreign exchange for the nation as proceeds are repatriated to Zambia.

Geologists at Kagem have “freed the emerald crystals from their host rock.” The result is a large mass, filled with numerous individual and intertwined emerald crystals, displaying their perfect hexagonal structure.

Kagem Assistant Sort House Manager Jackson Mtonga, who has 28 years of experience of emerald discoveries at Kagem, paid testimony to the incredible nature of this find: “Rarity is one of the factors that makes emeralds hold such a special value in many cultures around the world, but the combination of this crystal cluster formation, the overall quality and the sheer enormity of the Kafubu Cluster is something I never thought possible.”

The Kafubu Cluster displays all the desired characteristics that an emerald should possess: a vivid green colour overall that glows and shines. It offers different levels of perfect crystallisation, to allow the future cutter to create a collection of gems, from fine quality faceting material to cabochons and beads for everyday fun. It is possible that a customer may decide to preserve this in its natural form or cut the piece to yield tens of thousands of carats of commercial to fine quality cut emeralds.

The Kafubu Cluster is being offered for sale by Kagem’s parent company Gemfields at its upcoming emerald auction in Bangkok, with bidding closing on 17 November 2022. Given its size and quality, it is likely that the Kafubu Cluster will be the most expensive single emerald piece ever sold by Gemfields.

The Kafubu Cluster was discovered in the Chama pit of the Kagem emerald mine, based in Lufwanyama in Zambia. Kafubu is a river which forms the natural boundary of Kagem in the southern part of the Kagem licence, and it is from this that the Kafubu Cluster takes its name – honouring the unique landscape in which it was formed. Kagem is believed to be the world’s single largest producing emerald mine; it is 75% owned by Gemfields, in a model partnership with the Zambian government.

Discovered in March 2020, the Kafubu Cluster is a colossal cluster of emeralds. Close inspection of the 37,555-gram (187,775 carat) cluster reveals that it contains very little matrix or other minerals, meaning the piece is almost entirely made up of emeralds, which, given its sheer size and formation, makes this a very rare find indeed.

The Kafubu Cluster is a testament to the high-quality gemstones that can be produced when Mother Nature allows time for the various crystals to form deep within the Earth’s crust. Gemfields’ geologists describe the formation process of emeralds as an incredibly rare coming together of uncommon elements in unusual circumstances.

A precise set of remarkable geological and geochemical conditions is required for the formation of these brilliant green gems. Beryllium, essential for the crystallisation of beryl, is one of the most elusive elements in the Earth’s crust (estimated to be about 2 parts per million) and must be carried up to the surface by pegmatites, which, in turn, must come into contact with chromium and vanadium-bearing (ultramafic) rocks in order to attain the desired colour. Not all pegmatites are beryllium-bearing and even fewer are emplaced within rocks that contain adequate chromium. These factors – coupled with even more specific temperature, pressure and fluid content requirements for its formation – makes emerald extremely rare and remarkably erratic in its distribution.

Zambian emeralds tend to have a higher iron content than emeralds from other origins, which means they are less fragile. High iron content also means fewer surface-reaching fractures and less need for treatments and enhancements. The careful process of recovering emeralds by hand at the Kagem emerald mine has enabled the safe recovery of some of the largest and most exceptional emeralds ever found, of which the Kafubu Cluster is an extraordinary example.

The naming of uncut emeralds is a tradition reserved only for the rarest and most remarkable gems. While no official record exists, it is thought that no more than two dozen gemstones have ever been given their own name, and it is extremely unusual to encounter a gemstone weighing more than 1,000 carats. Unlike Insofu (elephant), Inkalamu (lion) and Chipembele (rhino), the Kafubu Cluster is not one single crystal and is completely unique in character.

THE RECENT BY-ELECTIONS: MY TAKE- Sinkamba

By Peter Sinkamba

THE RECENT BY-ELECTIONS: MY TAKE

A number of by-elections have been held countrywide since August. Let me hasten to congratulate UPND and PF for winning some of them.

However, I have two key issues of concern to highlight. First, it is the resurfacing ugly face of electoral violence. Second, it is the issue of Kwacha and Kabushi by-elections.

On the issue of political violence, it is extremely disgusting that after a sigh of relief that political violence was on the verge of oblivion following the triumph of UPND in the 2021 General emElections, violence has resurfaced once more. What is quite disturbing is that President HH has said nothing about it, except to congratulate UPND for resounding victories.

My view is that electoral victory is immaterial if blood is spilt or any one of our fellow citizens are injured or maimed as a consequence of electoral violence.

My long standing view is that no drop of blood of our fellow is worth spilling for political expediency. I strongly believe that for our democracy to flourish and thrive, it must be devoid of political violence. For, violence breeds more violence and the net outcome civil strife. Our beloved country risks losing the cherished democracy our forefathers sacrificed to bring about if political violence is not curtailed firmly.

As can be noted from events in the Sahel region, political violence has been the harbinger for the growing trend of military coups. Last month’s coup d’etat in Burkina Faso, was the seventh in 26 months around the Sahel region. The visible cause of the trend is toxic governance. This has led to wider violence, human displacement and destabilization.

Having witnessed three attempted coups in Zambia in the 1980s and 1990s, and mindful of military-induced instabilities in our neighbouring north, I shudders to see our beautiful country degenerate to such chaos and untold human suffering.

I therefore implore the President to earnestly address this issue comprehensively when he comes back from attending COP 27 in Egypt. He really needs to be on top of things in this regard.

On Kwacha and Kabushi elections, let me mention that Isaac Mwanza and I are appearing before the Concourt over the same, having sued ECZ for breach of the Constitution. It is contempt of court to discuss matters that are before court. Perhaps, the only update I can safely share at this point is that we will be having a status conference before Honorable Justice Professor Margaret Munalula, Deputy Judge President of Concourt on 17th November.

Now that I am back to posting, I will keep you my followers in the loop on the issue.
