THE PF CASE: A JUDICIARY AT WAR WITH DEMOCRACY- Fred M’membe

THE PF CASE: A JUDICIARY AT WAR WITH DEMOCRACY

Yesterday was a day of coincidences – injunction against the authentic Patriotic Front leadership, Miles Sampa’s hold on the Matero’s parliamentary seat protected, and the Tonse leadership taken away from the authentic PF leadership at night!

But let me focus a bit more on what has unfolded around the continued court denials of the  PF convention. This  is not merely a legal controversy. It is a direct assault on Zambia’s democratic architecture. When courts repeatedly intervene in internal party processes at a time of heightened political sensitivity, the issue ceases to be about law alone and becomes a matter of national conscience.

It is now impossible to ignore the growing perception that some sections of the judiciary have abandoned the sacred principle of impartiality and chosen instead to play an active role in shaping political outcomes. Whether by design, fear, convenience, or quiet alignment with the Executive, the result is the same: justice delayed, justice distorted, and democracy weakened.

Zambia is heading into a critical general election in August. At such a moment, judges with even a modest commitment to democratic stability should understand the weight of their decisions. Courts are not operating in a vacuum. Every injunction, delay, and selective urgency carry political consequences. To pretend otherwise is either dishonest or dangerously naïve.

The continued blocking of the PF convention does not punish a political party alone. It punishes millions of citizens who believe in competitive politics, pluralism, and the right of political organisations to organise without judicial micromanagement. Democracy thrives on choice. When courts are seen to systematically narrow that choice, they are no longer neutral arbiters; they become political actors.

This is where the tragedy lies. A judiciary that should serve as the final shield against abuse of power is increasingly viewed as an extension of that power. That perception, once entrenched, is extremely difficult to reverse. Public confidence in the courts is not a luxury; it is the oxygen of constitutional governance. Without it, rulings may be legally clothed but morally naked.

Mr Hakainde Hichilema can not escape responsibility for this crisis of confidence. Even if one were to assume that he gives no direct instructions to the courts, leadership is also about perception, restraint, and safeguarding institutional independence. Silence in the face of obvious public concern is not neutrality; it is complicity by omission. A president who truly respects the separation of powers must be visibly uncomfortable when courts are accused, rightly or wrongly, of serving his political interests.

What we are witnessing is not the strengthening of the rule of law but its weaponisation. Legal technicalities are being elevated above democratic substance. Speed is applied selectively. Urgency appears only when opposition processes are at stake. This pattern, whether intentional or not, feeds the belief that justice is no longer blind but politically guided.

History is unforgiving to judges who confuse temporary favour with lasting legacy. Political seasons change. Presidents come and go. What remains is the record. Those who use judicial authority to advance or protect political agendas will be remembered not as guardians of the Constitution but as contributors to democratic decay.

Zambia has walked this road before. We know where it leads: weakened institutions, polarised citizens, and elections whose credibility is questioned before the first ballot is cast. Recovering from such damage is costly and slow. Some nations never fully do.

This moment demands courage from the bench. It demands restraint from the executive. Above all, it demands honesty. Courts must act and be seen to act, with independence, balance, and urgency that serves democracy, not suffocates it.

If the judiciary continues on its current path, it will not be the Patriotic Front alone that suffers. It will be Zambia’s democratic soul that is placed on trial. History will pass a verdict far harsher than any injunction issued today.

PF NOT AT THE END OF THE ROAD DESPITE COURT INJUNCTION

….we will have a general conference in February to elect our leader, insists Mukandila

Lusaka… Thursday January 29, 2026

Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General for Administration, Celestine Mambula Mukandila, says the former ruling party remains resolute and focused despite a recent ruling by the Kabwe High Court that upheld an injunction restraining the party from holding meetings or conferences.

The injunction bars a faction of the PF led by acting president Given Lubinda from convening any meetings or conferences in the name of the party.

However, speaking on a 5FM radio programme on Thursday, Mr. Mukandila said the ruling has not stalled the party’s plans, stating that preparations for the PF General Conference are at an advanced stage and will go ahead in February.

He said the PF Central Committee has already resolved that the conference will take place next month, with only the exact date yet to be confirmed.

“We have reached a very advanced stage to prepare for the General Conference for the Patriotic Front and we will have it in February. The PF Central Committee has already given its position that the conference will be held in February. We are just waiting for the Central Committee, in the nearest future but not later than Monday, to decide on the precise date,” Mr. Mukandila said.

He added that the party will emerge from the convention with a leader.

“By hook or crook, we will have the general conference,” he emphasized.

Mr. Mukandila accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of sponsoring confusion within the PF, claiming the party’s challenges are politically motivated.

He maintained that the PF remains strong and enjoys widespread support across the country.

https://youtu.be/SgPqmGSFLoA?si=Njtppgpm8N0WkAiJ

“The PF is a movement. It is in the hearts of the people and it remains the biggest opposition political party in the country,” he said.

The Lusaka-based lawyer further disclosed that the PF may hold its convention either under the PF banner or through another political party within the Tonse Alliance.

He explained that late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu had left Hon Lubinda as acting Tonse Alliance chairperson and PF acting president, and that alliance members had agreed that both the chairmanship and presidential candidacy under Tonse would come from the PF.

“As such, we can use any party under the Tonse Alliance as a purpose vehicle,” Mr. Mukandila said.

He also warned PF members against associating with the Danny Pule-led Tonse Alliance, stating that it is not recognized by the PF.

“We issued a communiqué that whoever associates with the Danny Pule-led Tonse Alliance expels himself or herself,” he said.

Mr. Mukandila said the party remains determined to “redeem” Zambians from what he described as suffering under the UPND government.

He emphasized that discipline is critical to building a united opposition ahead of the August general elections.

PF RISKS SELF-DESTRUCTION… if its leadership fails to put aside personal rivalries and act with political maturity before the dissolution of Parliament

PF RISKS SELF-DESTRUCTION

…. if its leadership fails to put aside personal rivalries and act with political maturity before the dissolution of Parliament

Lusaka…. Thursday January 29, 2026 (SMART EAGLES)

Political activist Charles Chishimba has warned that the Patriotic Front (PF) risks self-destruction if its leadership fails to put aside personal rivalries and act with political maturity before the dissolution of Parliament.

Mr Chishimba said reunification within PF was still possible, but only if leaders chose unity over ego-driven battles.

“PF reuniting before the dissolution of Parliament is still possible, but it will depend on whether political maturity finally takes precedence over egos,” Mr Chishimba said.

He lamented the absence of decisive and calming leadership within the former ruling party, arguing that senior figures had failed to rise to the moment.

“This was the exact moment when Given Lubinda should have risen as a father figure in PF – a unifier who calms tempers and brings everyone to the table. Unfortunately, PF today looks like a home where children are fighting, and there is no parent willing or able to stop them,” he said.

Mr Chishimba said the current standoff would serve as a defining test for the party’s leadership and their ability to place the organisation above personal interests.

“This period will test the political intelligence of PF leadership. It will show whether they are mature enough to navigate a difficult moment or whether they will allow personal battles to destroy a party with deep roots in the country,” he said.

He added that unity within the party remained achievable if key figures demonstrated goodwill and engaged constructively.

“Unity is still achievable, especially if Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile can put differences aside and engage in a serious round-table discussion for the good of the party and its supporters,” Mr Chishimba said.

However, he also outlined an alternative strategic option should reconciliation fail, suggesting that some leaders consider disengaging from ongoing internal legal battles.

“If I were advising strategically, I would recommend that Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile consider going to Tonse under FDD and leave Given Lubinda and a small group to continue fighting PF court battles on their own,” he said.

According to Mr Chishimba, such a move would deny political opponents an opportunity to exploit the PF brand during the general elections.

“This would deny Chabinga and UPND the opportunity to field a candidate under the PF name in the general elections – a move that would only confuse the electorate, and one that UPND may well be counting on,” he said.

Mr Chishimba emphasised that the party’s future depended less on legal manoeuvres and formal positions, and more on decisive, strategic leadership.

“At this stage, clarity, unity, and strategic thinking matter more than titles and court papers,” he said.

WE WANT MAKEBI ZULU TO BE OUR FLAG BEARER-NCP’s PETER CHANDA

WE WANT MAKEBI ZULU TO BE OUR FLAG BEARER-NCP’s CHANDA

PASTOR PETER CHANDA – STATEMENT

Good morning, members of the press.

I want to acknowledge the leadership of the New Congress Party, those that are present and those that are absent.

Leadership is about listening to the masses, listening to the wishes of the Zambian people. And if there is one thing the Zambian people always look for, it is leadership where you can confidently say, “He or she is a listening president,” a leader who listens.

You may be aware that we held a General Conference in 2025 on the 18th of November, where I was re-elected as President of the New Congress Party for a five-year mandate. The Constitution of the New Congress Party gives the President certain privileges, and it is under that privilege that I am making this announcement today.

At that time, I made a pronouncement that I was going to face the ballot.

We made an attempt. We participated in the Chawama elections, and we demonstrated to the whole country that we are ready to stand as an independent political party and compete in an election.

At the same time, after the Chawama direction, a prior meeting was followed by Honorable Miles Sampa, who called on me and said they wanted us to discuss. We discussed. Another meeting followed with Honorable Celestine Mukandila, the Deputy Secretary General for Administration, and thereafter we had the final discussion with Honorable Given Lubinda, where we discussed and mended what was standing between us. Those negotiations are still ongoing.

But I want to stand before the nation today with utmost sincerity about what I have agreed with other brothers from the Patriotic Front. And these talks did not begin today.

As you may be aware, the legacy of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu stands distorted in the sense that the Tonse Alliance he left is not the same Tonse Alliance we see today. The Tonse Alliance President Lungu left was an alliance where the Patriotic Front was the anchor party

We came out of UKA on the premise that President Lungu and the Patriotic Front were being disrespected.

Today, I stand feeling saddened to see what President Lungu left internally being dismantled, and the institution and leadership he left being insulted, to an extent where you even hear statements suggesting that UKA has expelled the Patriotic Front.

I want to state this clearly.

As the New Congress Party, we strongly believe that mutual respect is cardinal in the way we engage in politics. At the same time, sincerity is very important in the way we conduct our political discourse.

I want to be sincere and state that from the time I took a backstep from Tonse, and from the time I exited the Tonse Alliance, if there is one brother who has consistently stood with me, who has consistently understood our position, and who has always reached out to say, “My brother, I want to hear you,” it has been Honorable Makebi Zulu.

I want to say that we have attempted. I have listened keenly to the comments, because I am one person who pays attention to what the Zambian people want. I also understand political dynamics, coming from a theological background. I believe in the wisdom and acumen of the sons of Issachar, who understood the times.

To all members of the New Congress Party, I am sure we are all following what is happening on social media.

President Makebi Zulu has a comparative advantage in terms of popularity and in terms of representing the interest and legacy of President Lungu. Just as President KBF stated, President Makebi Zulu was one person who believed in President Lungu, one person who stood to defend President Lungu until his death and even after his death.

However, today, having assessed the political environment, and applying the wisdom of the sons of Issachar, the time is not indicating that it is right for me, as Peter Chanda, to contest the presidency.

Therefore, I want to state that the New Congress Party will look forward to working together with the Patriotic Front within this alliance framework.

I also want to state that during our General Conference, we agreed that should we assess the ground and see that the Zambian people are not chanting the way they need to chant to indicate that it is time, then we must understand that signal. We unanimously agreed that in such a situation, endorsement would be the responsible path.

So today, I want to state that I withdraw from the race in 2026, and I hereby use my constitutional powers to appoint a presidential candidate.

I want to say this to my brother, President Makebi Zulu, who is an aspiring candidate within the Patriotic Front.

From the New Congress Party, we do not believe in planting seeds of discord. Just as I stated yesterday, and as you may already know, Honorable Given Lubinda deserves to be respected.

It is my prayer that as you accept this invitation to stand as the presidential candidate of the New Congress Party, you will sit down with the Patriotic Front leadership. We understand the predicament the Patriotic Front is in, and it is my prayer that unity of purpose and unity within the opposition will prevail.

My desire is that we go with one message. A message anchored on the four pillars of nationhood, which are promoting peace, unity, stability, and productivity. We want to take this country into a productive era.

Today, many people will say only one person can become President. Some have called me selfish. To them, I want to say this: if I was the one who moved the motion at the General Conference to amend the Constitution to allow the President to appoint a presidential candidate, that tells you I believe in reading the times. And when you see that you are not ready, and when you see that the Zambian people have not yet embraced your message, then you pass the ball.

I am a midfielder, or a striker,
believes that sometimes you must pass the ball to someone who can score the goal. Life is about understanding the comparative advantage your brother has.

I strongly believe that Honorable Makebi Zulu, who is now announced as the presidential candidate for the New Congress Party come 2026, has that advantage.

We will sit down with his colleagues in the Patriotic Front and see how we can work together to ensure that we do justice to the Zambian people.

For now, this is my special address for today.

Thank you very much, unless there are any questions.

IT WAS SAD TO SEE MORE THAN 5 CABINET MINISTERS STAY AWAY FROM MINISTERIAL WORK TO CAMPAIGN IN KASAMA – SINKAMBA

IT WAS SAD TO SEE MORE THAN 5 CABINET MINISTERS STAY AWAY FROM MINISTERIAL WORK TO CAMPAIGN IN KASAMA – SINKAMBA

Opposition Green Party leader, Peter Sinkamba, has expressed concern over the heavy presence of Cabinet ministers during campaigns for the Kasama mayoral by-election in Northern Province.

Several Cabinet ministers, among them Minister of Mines Paul Kabuswe and Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu, were seen in Kasama campaigning ahead of the by-election taking place today.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Sinkamba questioned why senior government officials had abandoned their official duties in Lusaka to participate in campaign activities that, in his view, should be handled by party structures at district level.

“It is not wrong for Cabinet ministers to help with campaigns, but when more than five ministers are campaigning in one area for an extended period, government work is affected because they are heads of ministries,” Mr. Sinkamba said.

He further argued that the manner in which the UPND government is conducting itself reflects what he described as a normalization of dishonesty in governance.

PF FACTION OPPOSES KABWE HIGH COURT INJUNCTION

PF FACTION OPPOSES KABWE HIGH COURT INJUNCTION

By Cecilia Kayaya Mporokoso

The Patriotic Front (PF) faction led by Given Lubinda has described the Kabwe High Court injunction as a deliberate effort to keep the party permanently tied to courts and a political chokehold.

Media Director Edwin Lifwekelo says the move is an abuse of the judicial process and a threat to democratic order.

Mr Lifwekelo says the PF leadership dispute is already before courts of competent jurisdiction and that repackaging it is tantamount to forum shopping and procedural manipulation.

He says what the PF wants is a full trial, final determination, and an end to injunctions.

A Response to Hon. Given Katuta’s Misleading Claims on President Lungu’s Burial

A Response to Hon. Given Katuta’s Misleading Claims on President Lungu’s Burial

By Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

With all due respect, the statement by Hon. Given Katuta—“Stop blaming President Hichilema and AG Kabesha for the delay in the burial of former President Lungu. It’s because of the greed of PF leaders”—is not only deeply misleading but also profoundly insulting to the truth and to a grieving family.

The delay in the burial of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has nothing to do with PF leaders’ so-called greed and everything to do with one simple, undeniable fact: it is President Hakainde Hichilema who dragged a grieving widow to court.

So let us ask plainly—where does PF come in here?

Instead of confronting this uncomfortable truth, Hon. Given Katuta has chosen the path of political convenience: deflecting blame, rewriting facts, and shielding the very authority that initiated legal action against a mourning family.

A widow, still in the depths of grief, is fighting the full machinery of the State in court. That is not speculation. That is public record. Yet you deliberately ignore this reality and point fingers elsewhere. That is not leadership; it is calculated distortion.

What makes this even more disturbing is that Hon. Katuta speaks as both a lawmaker and a reverend. One would expect someone in such positions to demonstrate empathy, moral courage, and respect for truth. Instead, we are treated to reckless commentary that trivializes the suffering of a bereaved family while sanitizing the actions of power. If these remarks were made with full knowledge of the facts, then the silence on the court case is inexcusable. If they were made without understanding, then that ignorance is equally shameful.

This is not the time for cheap political talking points or loyalty performances. This is a moment that demands restraint, compassion, and honesty.

You cannot excuse the actions of the Head of State, ignore the anguish of a widow, and then conveniently dump responsibility on PF leadership. That narrative collapses under even the slightest scrutiny.

Hon. Given Katuta would do well to stay in her lane. If she has nothing factual, balanced, or compassionate to contribute to this painful national moment, silence would be far more dignified than public misdirection. Zambians deserve truth—not political gymnastics performed on the back of a grieving family.

What a shame.

NCP INVITES MAKEBI ZULU TO BE ITS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

NCP INVITES MAKEBI ZULU TO BE ITS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

PETER CHANDA PRESS CONFERENCE
Held at the New Congress Party (NCP) Headquarters, New Kasama
28th January 2025 –

BA MAYO NA BA TATA NAIMWE MWEMISEPELA — DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

1. Today, I stand before you not just as President of the New Congress Party, but as a servant of the people, a voice for unity, peace, and purpose. The New Congress Party, a party of choice of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. We have heard the cries of Zambians across our great nation, the call for opposition unity has grown louder than ever. And because I have always kept faith with our late beloved President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and with the leadership of the Patriotic Front under Hon. Given Lubinda, I say this with conviction: I have listened and I have heard.

2. My brothers and sisters, leadership is not about stubborn ambition. It is about discernment, about reading the signs of the times. As a young leader, grounded in faith and guided by the example of the sons of Issachar who understood the times, I believe that before every great harvest comes preparation. After prayer, reflection, and consultation across our nation, I can now boldly say: the ground is not yet ready for me to stand for the presidency in 2026.

3. But this is not a retreat; this is a call to rally. A call to express faith in unity and to endorse a candidate of preference. Today, I summon all well-meaning citizens of Zambia, men and women of faith, the youth, our mothers and fathers to stand behind a man of courage, faith, and conviction. A man who has defended our Constitution fearlessly, who has remained unshakably loyal to President Edgar Chagwa Lungu even in times of trial and mourning. A man whose law firm has stood in the gap for the Patriotic Front, its leaders, and the Lungu family without fear or favor. A man respected across the political divide. That man, whom we choose to endorse as a party, my fellow Zambians, is Counsel Makebi Zulu!

4. In today’s Zambia, where politics is often defined by vengeance and division, stepping forward for service takes courage. And Counsel Makebi Zulu has done just that. He stands for unity in diversity, justice without compromise, and leadership with humility. That, my friends, is the kind of leadership Zambia needs, leadership that unites, not divides; that builds, not destroys.

5. I have walked this road before, through the United Kwacha Alliance, through the Tonse Alliance and I have seen what happens when respect is lost, when arrogance overshadows unity. Let us not repeat those mistakes. I appeal to all Patriotic Front members and aspiring candidates: let us unite, with respect, maturity, and collective purpose, as we, as NCP rally behind and endorse Counsel Makebi Zulu for the good of our country.

6. This decision is not mine alone; it is the voice of the people and the will of the New Congress Party. At our General Conference held on 18th November 2025, the delegates spoke clearly and unanimously that we work with Counsel Makebi Zulu. And today, in the spirit of transparency and patriotism, I make that decision public. We trust that the Patriotic Front and Counsel Zulu’s team will receive this declaration, endorsement and invitation with the same democratic spirit in which it has been made.

Zambia needs unity. Zambia needs integrity. Zambia needs leadership that listens to the people, not leadership that listens to pride.

So let us rise together, under one banner of faith, democracy, and national renewal.
I thank you  and may God richly bless our Republic.

KANGWA HAS NO AUTHORITY TO HIRE OR FIRE A PS- Antonio Mwanza

KANGWA HAS NO AUTHORITY TO HIRE OR FIRE A PS

According to News Diggers Newspapers, “Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa has warned that he won’t hesitate to remove civil servants taking part in politics. “How will an office run if you have a UPND PS”.”

Article 184 is very clear, the Secretary to the Cabinet in Zambia does not have the legal authority to remove (dismiss) a Permanent Secretary (PS) from office. The power to appoint or remove PSs rests with the President, not the Secretary to Cabinet. Only the President can fire a presidential appointee.

While professionalism and integrity are fundamental hallmarks of the Civil Service, matters relating to the appointment or removal of Permanent Secretaries remain the exclusive preserve of the appointing authority — the President — as provided for under the Constitution.

The functions of the Secretary to Cabinet are advisory, administrative, and managerial, not appointing or dismissing Permanent Secretaries, that’s purely the preserve of the  President who is the appointing authority.

GREEN PARTY RAISES CONCERN OVER CONFIDENTIAL MoU WITH U.S GOV’T

GREEN PARTY RAISES CONCERN OVER CONFIDENTIAL MoU WITH U.S GOV’T

Opposition Green Party Leader Peter Sinkamba has expressed concern over government’s announcement that health sector support may be linked to expanded access for American interests in Zambia’s mineral resources.

Zambia recently disclosed that it is close to signing a confidential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States, which would tie support to the health sector to increased access for American interests in minerals such as copper, gold, and cobalt.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Sinkamba questioned the secrecy surrounding the agreement, arguing that if it were beneficial to Zambians, there would be no need for it to be signed in private.

“Having a secret deal tied to public service delivery is highly suspicious and suggests that the contents of the agreement may not be in the best interests of Zambians,” said Mr. Sinkamba.

He further reminded government that the Zambian Constitution requires all loans and similar agreements to be handled transparently and subjected to parliamentary approval.

Mr. Sinkamba has since called on the government to either make the agreement public or abandon it altogether, warning that proceeding with it could undermine the country’s natural resources.

IT IS A FALLACY TO THINK THAT MINNING COMPANIES OPERATING IN ZAMBIA DO NOT PAY TAXES – HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed claims that mining companies operating in Zambia do not pay taxes, describing such assertions as false.

President Hichilema has disclosed that First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is the largest single taxpayer in the country.

Speaking during the 2026 Presidential Annual Greetings for the Diplomatic Corps held in Lusaka today, Mr. Hichilema said it is a fallacy to suggest that mining companies do not contribute to the national treasury, noting that taxes paid by the mining sector are critical to national development programmes.

“The taxes collected from the mining sector are channelled towards free education, the Cash for Work programme, the agriculture sector, among other key national initiatives,” said President Hichilema.

Meanwhile, the President has called for increased trade collaborations with diplomats accredited to Zambia in various sectors of mutual interest.

He said Zambia offers significant opportunities in agriculture, energy, and manufacturing, which require strong international partnerships and collaboration.

ZACA CONCERNED WITH FAST DEPLETION OF ZESCO UNITS

THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed concern with the rate at which Zesco Units are depleting.

ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, says many consumers have complained that their electricity units are running out too quickly, with some reporting usage of up to 17 units per day, a situation he describes as unsustainable.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Sakala acknowledges that tariff adjustments were implemented but stressed that the pricing structure should not place an excessive burden on ordinary Zambians.

He has further called on ZESCO to regularly issue clear updates explaining how electricity units are consumed and calculated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sakala has appealed to ZESCO not to effect any further upward tariff adjustments, noting that the current electricity costs are worsening the already high cost of living.

“THE COP TOLD ME TO KILL”: PIG FARM MURDERER BLAMES POLICE FOR BLOODSHED

“THE COP TOLD ME TO KILL”: PIG FARM MURDERER BLAMES POLICE FOR BLOODSHED

A convicted killer whose crimes shocked the nation has made a jaw-dropping claim in court, alleging that a police officer encouraged him to take the law into his own hands.

Zacharia Olivier Lo, who murdered two women and disposed of their bodies by feeding them to pigs, told the court he was pushed toward violence by advice he received at a police station.

Lo testified that he repeatedly visited the station to complain about ongoing thefts at his property. Instead of help, he claims one officer allegedly told him he should “shoot the thieves” rather than keep reporting the crimes.

According to Lo, the comment left him angry, frustrated and emboldened, a dangerous mix that he says contributed to his violent actions.

Prosecutors have firmly rejected Lo’s account, and the state disputes any suggestion of police involvement.

The court is continuing to examine the claims, which have sparked outrage and renewed questions about police conduct, accountability, and how a case this horrific could ever unfold.

FASHION SAKALA SCORES AGAIN AS AL FAYHA BOOST SURVIVAL HOPES WITH WIN OVER AL KHALEEJ

ZAMBIAN forward Fashion Sakala netted in his fourth straight match as Al Fayha secured a 3-1 victory over Al Khaleej to move onto 20 points and edge further away from the relegation zone.

Fashion Sakala continued his scintillating form, scoring for the fourth consecutive game as Al Fayha claimed a vital 3-1 victory over Al Khaleej, strengthening their push away from the relegation zone.

The hosts made a fast start and were handed the lead in the 16th minute when Hussain Al Sultan turned the ball into his own net, gifting Al Fayha early control of the contest.

That advantage was doubled in the 38th minute through former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, who rose highest to finish clinically after a well-delivered assist from Yassine Benzia.

Al Fayha were relentless in the opening half and wrapped up a dominant first-half display three minutes before the break. Sakala picked up the ball in space, surged forward and produced a fine solo effort, making it 3-0 and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Al Khaleej showed more urgency after the interval and were rewarded late on when Georgios Masouras pulled one back in the 80th minute, but the goal came too late to alter the outcome.

The win lifts Al Fayha to 20 points, further consolidating their bid to steer clear of relegation trouble, while Sakala’s influence continues to grow. The Zambian forward has now registered eight goal contributions this season, six goals and two assists underlining his importance to the club’s survival hopes.

🚨 Breaking News : U.S. Deploys Powerful RC-135V Spy Aircraft to Qatar, Within Range of Iran 🇺🇸🇮🇷

A U.S. Air Force RC-135V Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft, one of Washington’s most advanced intelligence-gathering platforms, has been deployed to the Middle East, according to independently verified civilian flight-tracking data.

Data from FlightRadar24 confirms that the aircraft departed Nebraska, transited RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, and landed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on January 28. The deployment places the high-value surveillance aircraft at one of the United States’ most important military hubs in the region.

Al Udeid Air Base is located approximately 270 kilometers from Iran’s coastline and routinely hosts U.S. strategic air assets supporting regional operations.

The arrival of the RC-135V strengthens American intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities amid heightened regional tensions.

The RC-135V Rivet Joint is specifically designed to intercept and analyze electronic emissions and communications, allowing U.S. forces to monitor military activity, radar systems, and command networks across vast areas. While public flight data does not show the aircraft entering Iranian airspace, its positioning in Qatar places it well within operational range for regional monitoring missions.

No official statement has been issued by the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the specific objectives or duration of this deployment. However, similar aircraft have historically been deployed during periods of increased military and political activity in the Middle East.

What is confirmed
• Aircraft type, route, and landing location verified
• Arrival at Al Udeid Air Base on January 28
• Information based on civilian flight-tracking data
What is not confirmed
• No evidence of Iranian airspace overflight
• Mission details remain undisclosed

UNITED STATES WARNS SOUTH AFRICA OF POSSIBLE SANCTIONS

URGENT: UNITED STATES WARNS SOUTH AFRICA OF POSSIBLE SANCTIONS — IF WE DON’T ACT, THE POOR WILL SUFFER AND OUR COUNTRY COULD FALL LIKE VENEZUELA

The United States has formally warned South Africa that it could face sanctions if Pretoria’s foreign policy and trade actions clash with US sanctions rules. While no sanctions have been imposed yet, this warning is serious — it could be the first step toward far-reaching economic and diplomatic consequences.

Why This Is Happening

Tensions have grown because of South Africa’s foreign policy decisions, including relationships with countries like Russia, China, and Iran, and positions taken at international forums. The US is using this warning to signal that our actions could have legal and economic consequences if ignored.

What Could Happen Next

Targeted sanctions may be applied to specific individuals or sectors.

Trade and banking restrictions could make it harder and more expensive to do business internationally.

Economic instability could hit, affecting prices, jobs, and access to basic goods.

Impact on the Poor

If sanctions escalate, the people who will suffer most are the poor:

Jobs could be lost as businesses struggle with higher costs.

Basic goods may become more expensive, increasing hunger and hardship.

Inflation could rise, making it harder to afford food, medicine, and services.

Government revenue may drop, forcing cuts to healthcare, schools, and social support.

South Africa could face a Venezuela-style collapse if warning signs are ignored: economic pressure plus poor management and inequality can push a country into widespread poverty, unemployment, and hardship for millions.

What Must Be Done

Strengthen our economy: Diversify industries and create local jobs to reduce dependence on foreign powers.

Improve diplomacy: Seek common ground with partners while protecting our sovereignty.

Protect the vulnerable: Focus on policies that safeguard the poor and maintain essential services.

Build stronger international partnerships: Reduce reliance on one powerful country to cushion economic shocks.

This is a defining moment for South Africa. We must act wisely to protect our people and our future. If we ignore the warning signs, the poorest will pay the highest price.

Share this now — South Africans must know what is at stake.

TRUMP CUTS MIGRATION, CENSUS DATA

TRUMP CUTS MIGRATION, CENSUS DATA SHOWS RISING AMERICAN LEVERAGE

For years, many Americans felt like the border was out of control and their voices didn’t matter.

Wages stayed flat, costs exploded, and it seemed like nothing in Washington ever really changed.

Now, a quiet but powerful shift is showing up in the numbers.

New Census data says President Trump is on pace to bring annual migration down to about 321,000 by June 2026 — a dramatic pullback compared to the chaos of recent years.

But here’s what most people missed: this isn’t just about numbers at the border.

When migration slows, the balance of power in the economy starts to tilt back toward the American worker, not the political donor or the multinational CEO.

Meanwhile, experts are admitting something our side has said for years: this isn’t some force of nature.

Policy matters.

When a president actually chooses to defend the border and put citizens first, immigration flows fall, wages can rise, and politicians are forced to focus on fixing problems here at home.

This is what America First looks like in real life — not anger, but quiet strength, restoring leverage to ordinary people.

Taliban Criminal Code Allows Child Abüse, Sl@very & Exécutïons, Says Rights Group

Taliban Criminal Code Allows Child Abüse, Sl@very & Exécutïons, Says Rights Group

The human rights organisation Rawadari says the Taliban have failed to fully criminalise the beating of children under their criminal courts’ code of procedure.

According to the organisation, Article 30 of the code prohibits only certain forms of physical violence that result in “bone fractures” or “tearing of the skin”.

The code does not explicitly ban other forms of physical, psychological or sexual violence against children. Article 48 states that a father may punish his 10-year-old son for actions such as neglecting prayers.

Taliban Code Recognises Slavery

Rawadari says the Taliban’s criminal code recognises slavery by repeatedly using the term “slave”. Articles 15 and 4 of the code refer to slavery and related rights.

Slavery is absolutely prohibited under international law in all its forms.

One provision states: “For any crime for which no fixed ‘hudud’ punishment is prescribed, discretionary punishment shall be imposed, whether the offender is free or a slave.”

Taliban Courts’ Code Prescribes Death for Opponents

According to the Taliban courts’ code, one copy of which has been obtained by Afghanistan International, the Taliban have issued death sentences for individuals described as “rebels”. The code states that the harm caused by a “rebel” is public in nature and cannot be remedied without killing.

This provision grants judicial bodies the authority to sentence opponents and critics to death. Article 4, Clause 6, allows citizens to personally punish individuals if they witness a “sin” being committed.

The code states: “Any Muslim who sees a person committing a sin has the right to punish them.”

Another provision says: “Anyone who witnesses or becomes aware of subversive meetings by opponents of the system but fails to inform the relevant authorities is considered a criminal and shall be sentenced to two years in prison.”

CAF has thrown out Morocco’s complaint, and the disciplinary outcome does not affect the 2025 AFCON final scoreline

CAF has thrown out Morocco’s complaint, and the disciplinary outcome does not affect the 2025 AFCON final scoreline.

Everything remains intact.

Senegal remains the rightful African champion.

Moroccan midfielder Ismaël Saibari has been handed a 3-match suspension in official CAF competitions for unsporting behaviour.

He has also been fined $100,000.

Another disciplinary blow for Morocco as CAF maintains a firm stance on conduct.

Morocco star Achraf Hakimi has been suspended for 2 official CAF matches following disciplinary action for unsporting behaviour.

▪️ One match is immediate
▪️ One match is suspended for 1 year from the date of the decision.

Two Senegal players have been sanctioned following disciplinary proceedings.

• Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye: suspended for 2 official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

• Ismaïla Sarr: suspended for 2 official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw has been handed a 5-match suspension from all official CAF competitions.

CAF says the decision is due to unsporting conduct, violating disciplinary principles of fair play, integrity, and for bringing the game into disrepute.

He has also been fined $100,000.

SENEGAL BOSS THIAW BANNED AFTER AFCON FINAL CHAOS

SENEGAL BOSS THIAW BANNED AFTER AFCON FINAL CHAOS

SENEGAL manager Pape Thiaw has been banned for five games after the chaotic scenes during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco this month.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) issued Thiaw with a $100,000 (£72,000) fine, saying he was guilty of “unsporting conduct” and “bringing the game into disrepute”.

It was one of a number of fines handed out, totalling almost £1m, following the game.

The final on 18 January in Rabat, which Senegal went on to win 1-0, descended into disarray when Senegal’s players left the field after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

Thiaw, still incensed by the referee’s decision moments before to blow for a foul on Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi before Ismaila Sarr headed in, instructed his players to leave the field.

The match was delayed by about 17 minutes before Senegal forward Sadio Mane convinced his team-mates to return to the pitch.

Brahim Diaz’s Panenka penalty was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and referee Jean-Jacques Ndala then immediately blew the whistle for full-time.

Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of extra time to seal a second Afcon triumph in five years for Senegal.

Senegal forwards Iliman Ndiaye and Sarr received two-match bans for “unsporting behaviour towards the referee”, while the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) was fined a total of $615,000 (£444,000).

Morocco forward Ismael Saibari was given a three-match ban and fined $100,000 (£72,000), while defender Hakimi was handed a two-match ban, with one game suspended for 12 months.

A bid by Morocco’s football federation (FRMF) to have the result of the match overturned after Senegal players left the pitch was dismissed by CAF’S disciplinary committee.

The bans for Thiaw and the four players relate to CAF matches only and will not impact preparation for the World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Fines for fan behaviour and towel scuffles
The FSF was fined $600,000 (£434,000) for breaches of Caf’s disciplinary code, with half of that sum relating to the unsporting conduct of Senegal players and technical staff, while the other $300,000 was for the improper conduct of its supporters.

Several Teranga Lions fans were involved in angry confrontations with security staff after the penalty award, with some trying to enter the pitch.

A further $15,000 ($11,000) fine was imposed after Thiaw’s side received five bookings during the final.

Meanwhile, the FRMF has been fined $200,000 (£144,000) for the “inappropriate behaviour” of ball boys at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, after repeated attempts to steal the towel of Senegal keeper Mendy from behind his goal.

A sum of $100,000 must be paid after Atlas Lions players and staff invaded the video assistant referee review area and obstructed referee Ndala’s work, and the FRMF has also been fined $15,000 for use of lasers by its supporters.

Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane (second left) has been handed a two-game ban for misconduct after their Afcon 2025 quarter-final exit

The sanctions from the final follow on from Algeria’s football federation (FAF) being fined a total of $100,000 last week for six breaches of Caf regulations during the side’s Afcon quarter-final exit at the hands of Nigeria.

Half of that sum was for “offensive and abusive gestures committed by its supporters” towards the match officials, including displaying banknotes.

Faf was also fined $25,000 for the “inappropriate behaviour” of its players and officials at the end of the match, which the Fennecs lost 2-0.

Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been banned for two games for misconduct, while right-back Rafik Belghali has received a four-game ban – with two games suspended for 12 months – for “aggressive and intimidating behaviour towards the match referee” after the full-time whistle.

The further FAF fines are $10,000 for failing to comply with security measures and three separate fines of $5,000 for throwing of objects by supporters, the use of smoke devices by fans and for receiving five yellow cards during the game in Marrakech.

Iran Says ‘Fingers on the Trigger’ as U.S. Military Buildup Intensifies Under Trump

Iran Says ‘Fingers on the Trigger’ as U.S. Military Buildup Intensifies Under Trump

Iran has placed its military forces on heightened alert, warning that its “fingers are on the trigger” in response to what it describes as an expanding U.S. military buildup in the region, according to a report by ABC News.

The warning comes amid escalating rhetoric and growing tensions following renewed hardline messaging from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Senior Iranian military officials stated that Tehran is closely monitoring American troop movements, naval deployments, and air activity near Iran’s borders.

Iranian commanders emphasized that while the country does not seek war, it is fully prepared to respond immediately to any hostile action. The remarks were framed as a deterrent message aimed at Washington rather than an announcement of imminent offensive action.

According to the report, U.S. military assets in the Middle East have increased in recent weeks, including strategic bombers, naval forces, and air defense systems.

American officials argue the deployments are defensive in nature, intended to protect U.S. forces and allies amid regional instability. However, Iranian officials interpret the buildup as a direct threat to national security.

Iranian leaders also accused Washington of fueling instability through pressure tactics, sanctions, and military signaling. They reiterated that any strike against Iranian territory or forces would trigger a swift and decisive response, potentially expanding the conflict beyond bilateral confrontation.

The renewed tensions come at a time when diplomatic channels between Tehran and Washington remain limited, with no clear framework for de-escalation currently in place. Analysts warn that miscalculation on either side could rapidly escalate into a broader regional crisis involving U.S. allies and Iranian-aligned groups across the Middle East.

PLANE CRASH IN COLOMBIA KILLS 15, INCLUDING POLITICIAN

PLANE CRASH IN COLOMBIA KILLS 15, INCLUDING POLITICIAN

A plane crash in northeast Colombia on Wednesday killed all 15 people on board, including a local lawmaker, state-run airline Satena said.

The Beechcraft 1900 twin-engined turboprop plane took off before noon from Cucuta, on the border with Venezuela, for a short flight to the town of Ocana, Satena said.

Air traffic control lost contact with the plane 12 minutes into the flight, the carrier added.

Satena did not say what caused the crash and said the plane’s emergency beacon had not been activated.

Lawmaker Diogenes Quintero and members of his team were aboard the plane, as well as Carlos Salcedo, a candidate for Congress ahead of elections in March, according to a passenger list released by the airline.

Images released by local media showed the crashed plane, including what appeared to be significant damage to the fuselage.

The area where the plane crashed is a mountainous region planted with coca leaves, the raw material for cocaine, and where illegal armed groups such as the National Liberation Army and a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia operate.

FEDERAL AGENTS INVOLVED IN FATAL SHOOTING OF ALEX PRETTI IN MINNEAPOLIS PLACED ON LEAVE

FEDERAL AGENTS INVOLVED IN FATAL SHOOTING OF ALEX PRETTI IN MINNEAPOLIS PLACED ON LEAVE

TWO federal agents involved in the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis have been placed on leave, law enforcement officials tell the BBC

Pretti, a US citizen, was shot and killed on Saturday in an incident which has sparked ongoing protests

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warns Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is “playing with fire” after Frey said “Minneapolis does not and will not enforce federal immigration laws”

Responding to Trump’s post on social media, Frey says “The job of our police is to keep people safe, not enforce fed immigration laws”

Trump’s comments come after Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar was attacked at an event she was hosting on Tuesday, when an audience member used a syringe to spray an unknown liquid at her

Omar, a Democrat who has frequently clashed with the Trump administration over its immigration policies, was not hurt and continued to speak

Events in Minnesota continue to dominate the headlines following the deaths of two US citizens this month, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by US immigration enforcement agents.

Two officers involved in the altercation that led to Pretti’s shooting have now been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

“Border tsar” Tom Homan arrived in Minneapolis on Wednesday to run immigration enforcement operations after the departure of Greg Bovino, who was commanding border patrol agents before the death of Pretti. Homan will hold a press conference on Thursday morning.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi also arrived in the city on Wednesday, announcing that 16 people have been arrested charged with allegedly assaulting federal officers and impeding on federal immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Minneapolis ordered the government to release all refugees who have been arrested by immigration agents while awaiting their permanent residency documents.

In a strongly-worded ruling, Judge John Tunheim said refugees “are not committing crimes on our streets, nor did they illegally cross the border,” adding that the US had been “a haven of individual liberties”.

“We abandon that ideal when we subject our neighbors to fear and chaos,” he said. He ordered that refugees taken out of Minnesota be returned to the state.

Opposition to the Trump administration’s policies has not been confined to Minnesota. In Texas, clashes erupted between protesters and state and federal officers outside a detention facility where some of those detained in Minnesota has been taken.

Democrats in Congress are demanding immediate reforms to immigration enforcement and for the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. They plan to press ahead with impeachment proceedings against Noem if she doesn’t resign or isn’t sacked by Trump.

The fallout from the government’s handling of Good and Pretti’s killings also adds to the possibility of a federal shutdown as key Democrats have signalled they will not support a new spending package that increases funding for ICE.

Has Hichilema Bought Mundubile too?

🇿🇲 EDITORIAL | Has Hichilema Bought Mundubile too?

The Patriotic Front is once again reaching for a familiar refuge: blaming President Hakainde Hichilema for its internal collapse. Brian Mundubile’s takeover of the Tonse Alliance has triggered the same reflex that followed the Miles Sampa episode in 2023 and the Robert Chabinga phase that came after it. Each time, PF insists the ruling party is “using” someone to kill the opposition. Each time, the party avoids the harder question: why is it so easy for PF to be taken over from within?

This pattern is now too consistent to dismiss as coincidence.

When Miles Sampa staged his October 2023 takeover of PF, the party said it was a State project. Police presence at Mulungushi was cited as proof. When Sampa later lost control to Robert Chabinga, PF said Chabinga had been bought. Now that Brian Mundubile has emerged through the Tonse Alliance route, the same accusation has been recycled. Three leaders in three years. Same explanation. Different actors.

At some point, the conspiracy collapses under its own weight.

If everyone who rises in PF can be “used,” then the problem is not infiltration. It is vacancy. A party without clear succession rules, without uncontested authority, and without institutional discipline creates space for coups. Power does not need to be stolen when it is lying on the floor.

Mundubile’s manoeuvre does not look new. It looks familiar. Zambia has seen this script before. After Michael Sata’s death in 2014, Edgar Lungu rose to the PF presidency through a contested, chaotic process that sidelined Miles Sampa. At the time, it was defended as political realism. Fast forward a decade and the same tactics are now being denounced as betrayal. The method has not changed. Only the moral language has.

This raises a deeper question PF refuses to answer: what exactly is the Tonse Alliance?

Is it an alliance of political parties, civil society organisations, churches, individuals, or all of the above? If Tonse is not a registered political party, how does it elect a president? If it uses a political party as a special purpose vehicle, what is the legal and political status of that vehicle relative to other members? Can any party simply be absorbed? Can individuals acquire seats without organisational mandates?

These questions are not academic. They determine legitimacy, nominations, campaign financing, and ballot access.

Mundubile’s election exposes these structural gaps. Does his elevation mean he has resigned from the PF? If not, who does he answer to? If yes, what happens to the PF MPs who have aligned with him? Does PF intend to formally release its members to Tonse, or will it pivot and recognise Robert Chabinga’s faction instead? Silence on these issues deepens confusion and weakens the opposition’s credibility.

PF’s own history explains the crisis more convincingly than any State project narrative. The party has never developed a stable succession culture. Leadership transitions have been transactional, personality-driven, and often enforced through brute political manoeuvre. While in power, the party held together through access to state resources. Out of power, the cracks are no longer patched over.

Claims that UPND is orchestrating PF’s implosion may resonate emotionally with a frustrated base, but they do not stand up structurally. At most, the ruling party acts as a catalyst. PF supplies the fuel.

The danger now is escalation. Reports that some PF old guards are preparing to refer Mundubile to law enforcement over alleged abuse of public funds during his tenure as Northern Province Minister point to a familiar cycle. Once investigations begin, the narrative will again shift to persecution. Accountability will be framed as political victimhood. Institutions will be blamed for doing their jobs.

This is how opposition credibility erodes.

The hard truth is this: PF is fighting PF. Tonse Alliance is not resolving PF’s succession crisis; it is exporting it. Until the opposition confronts its internal contradictions honestly, no amount of blaming the State will restore coherence.

Voters are watching closely. They are less interested in who is betraying whom, and more interested in whether the opposition can organise itself into a serious alternative government. Right now, the answer remains uncertain.

And uncertainty, not repression, is the opposition’s greatest enemy.

I DON’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT 2023 ILLEGAL CONVENTION – MILES SAMPA

I DON’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT 2023 ILLEGAL CONVENTION – SAMPA

MATERO PF MP Miles Sampa says he does not feel guilty about the illegal convention that he held in 2023, stating that the current PF wrangles cannot be attributed to that convention.

Meanwhile, Sampa says many people have told him that he is destined to rule this country, adding that it may not happen this year or in 2031 but he believes that it will happen someday.

Asked when he featured on Diamond TV, Monday, if he felt guilty and that he was to blame for the current internal wrangles in PF, Sampa said, “No. I’ve heard some politicians talk about that, when I hear that, I just say these are amateurs”.

“When you hear any politician talk about 2023 convention, just know that they are weak politicians, they have no people following them and they use that as an excuse. The real problem of the PF started when we lost power in 2021 general election.

I played my part in Matero, I got stabbed there fighting for votes for Edgar Lungu but we are a team and we lost, I’m part of the blame, together with everyone, only weak people try to blame others. That was the beginning of the problem; we can only correct that problem with the next general election.

Problems made in a general election, you correct them after five years. If that was the problem, why did the people of Chawama listen to me, why were they happy to see me, why did we deliver? PF is not a piece of paper, we have proved it in Chawama,” Sampa said.

“Go back to debates in Parliament or when the Bill [Cyber Crimes Act] was brought, I’m probably one of the few that spoke out against it. I believe, if one day, and a lot of people have told me that they think it’s in my destiny to rule this country one day, if it’s not 2026, it’s 2031, if it’s not, another year, they believe so and I have reason to believe so and with being put in the cells, those reasons are just being validated.

These are some of the Bills I’ll ensure that they are removed instantly, let the people talk, let the people say as they want. President HH, that’s what he advocated for, he condemned president ECL that stop this cyber law stopping people from speaking on Facebook, on TikTok, on Instagram, let them speak, whether it’s a lie or not, it’s freedom of speech, the people will make their choice and they made their choice in 2021, so you cannot guard people [on how] to speak”.

Sampa further said UPND had been trying to create a by-election in Matero but the ruling party would never win an election in that constituency.

“I now consider myself MP of Lusaka city. I’m MP of Chawama, Matero, Kanyama, Lusaka Central, Munali [and] Kabwata. In Matero, the only chance UPND had to win in Matero was in 2021 when they had [Tom] Michelo and when the wind of change was on their side and HH. It was a hard battle, we fought. Had PF put another candidate other than me, we would have lost that seat, like they lost in Kabwata, like PF lost in Lusaka Central, Munali, Kanyama but we fought hard.

Even now, they’ve always wanted to cause a by-election in Matero, they bring up this, they bring up this, they take this to court, they use surrogates, they use Chabinga or Ng’ona to create a by-election there,” said Sampa.

“Even now, there’s a judgment coming up next few days (today), if that judgment will be that there’s a by-election in Matero or otherwise, let me tell you something, UPND, as a ruling party, will never win Matero. If they cause a by-election between now and……they’ll not win a by-election there, whether it’s me standing there again or any other.

There are many individuals there, there’s Celestine [Mukandila], there’s councillor [Patrick] Salubusa, councillor Lee Mukupa, councillor Annie [Chinyanta], councillor [Chrispin] Kabole, there’s [David] Kakoma, those individuals, one of them there, if it’s not me, any by-election, 2026, the ruling party UPND will not win Matero. They said they would win Chawama, I said they would lose and they lost”.

WE HAVE OUTSMARTED PF- Mundubile’s Tonse Alliance

WE HAVE OUTSMARTED PF-DR LAWRENCE MWELWA

Faction Tonse Alliance Spokesperson, Dr. Lawrence Mwelwa Writes:

By Dr Mwelwa

Politics is cruel to those who mistake noise for power and nostalgia for strategy. The Lubinda-led PF faction is now living through a double tragedy of its own making: first, being frozen by the courts; second, being outpaced by history. When the Kabwe High Court reaffirmed the injunction restraining PF from holding a convention, it did more than stop a meeting—it exposed a movement stuck in yesterday while the board has already changed.

Enter Brian Mundubile. While others were busy arguing about legality, ownership, and who sits where, Mundubile quietly ate lunch. Not out of malice, but out of timing. Leadership is not about shouting the loudest; it is about knowing when the door is closing and choosing the window. Tonse Alliance became that window. By the time the Lubinda faction looked up, the plate was empty, and the question sounded painfully familiar: who moved my cheese?

This is where strategy separates adults from spectators. Sun Tzu warned that victory belongs to those who understand terrain and timing. Tonse Alliance read the weather. It saw the legal storm gathering over PF and chose movement over paralysis. The postponement of the Congress—derided by some as retreat—was in fact misdirection. In war, you sometimes step back so the opponent steps into thin air. Online threats of injunctions came; Tonse adjusted, absorbed pressure, and kept momentum. That is mingalato at its finest: advance without collision, win without chaos.

The tragedy for the Lubinda faction is philosophical. Power was treated as inheritance, not stewardship. Conventions were delayed, authority personalized, succession feared. When a leader publicly signals he cannot hand over because “no one is better,” he confesses not strength but insecurity. History does not wait for comfort. It rewards courage.

Brian Mundubile’s rise is therefore not an accident; it is a consequence. He chose law over drama, coalition over captivity, movement over mourning. Congratulations are due—not as flattery, but as recognition of judgment under pressure. Politics done properly looks boring until it wins.

And credit must also go where courage was required most: Professor Dan Pule. It takes a rare leader to hold the middle when factions pull apart, to choose unity when ego tempts spectacle. His steadiness kept the bridge standing long enough for others to cross.

The lesson is simple and old. Those who cling to the past ask who ate their cheese. Those who read the future are already cooking the next meal. Tonse Alliance did not steal lunch; it planned dinner.

LOSS IBABA, CRIES LISWANISO

LOSS IBABA, CRIES LISWANISO

ALMOST two weeks after a parliamentary by-election was held in Lusaka’s Chawama Constituency, the United Party for National Development (UPND) is still reeling from its shocking defeat at the hands of a fragmented opposition.

The ruling party’s leaders and members are still struggling to come to terms with what could have led to the opposition’s victory

“We lost in Chawama because people felt that the former Member of Parliament, Tasila Lungu, was victimised by the United Party for National Development ,” UPND national youth chairman Gilbert Liswaniso has said.

Liswaniso said it was difficult for the UPND to penetrate Chawama Constituency because the Patriotic Front (PF) support base was still very active and strong in the area.

Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) candidate Bright Nundwe, a former Copperbelt permanent secretary who was supported by Tonse Alliance, defeated UPND’s Morgan Muunda with a comfortable margin.

Speaking when he featured on Showster’s House podcast programme, Liswaniso said the ruling party lost the Chawama by-election because of public perception that it was too vindictive.

“First of all, my colleague, it is politics. You win, you lose some. And the lessons have been learned. At the end of the day, we lost. And we come and treat our colleagues, the opposition, for scooping up the Chawama by-election,” he said.

Liswaniso said a win for the opposition had rejuvenated its morale as the August 13 general election draws nearer.

“And it has boosted their camp, and the morale. They are celebrating.  For us as UPND, loss ibaba. We are in pain. We are pointing fingers at each other. We are blaming each other. Because of loss, nibang’ono bamaivomela [few people accept a loss]. A lot of people associate themselves with winning. And for me, it’s a lesson, because it’s the first time since we formed the government that I’ve lost an election,” he said.

Liswaniso said lessons had been learned from the Chawama loss. From the people he mingled with were able to advise them on the kind of message they should deliver. He said one party faction had not followed the strategy set to help win the by-election for various reasons.

“So, there are many reasons why we lost Chawama. Number one, did we have a strategy? Yes, it was there. Did people follow? I may say people never followed. Those who were assigned to follow the principle, the strategy itself, I think, for me, it’s that there are only a few who followed the strategy to ensure that we win the by-election for Chawama. Nevertheless, maybe we went casually there, thinking that because we have been winning all those by-elections all along, we thought even Chawama would be easy,” Liswaniso said.

He said residents of Chawama Constituency did not hide their displeasure with the manner the UPND government had ill-treated the former president Edgar Lungu’s family.

“Sometimes it’s a feeling ati bamucosapo uja. How you feel about in the compounds, it’s not about the law. They felt like this girl, Tasila, has been treated badly. The first two weeks, I mean, one week, yeah, let me say two weeks, it was hard. Okay, even just people rising, I’m specifically pointing out certain ones which are very difficult, like Ward 2, which has the largest population of voters, almost 41,200 voters. That was very difficult for us,” Liswaniso said.

He said the UPND had faced many challenges that led to the loss of the by-election.

Liswaniso said he was in Chawama for two months campaigning, monitoring and evaluating the chances of candidates to win the elections.

“But for some of us who were there from the time they just announced the Chawama by-election. We’re able to identify some challenges, identify who is strong, how strong the PF is. All those things we identified them to say, okay, what is in Ward 1 in Misisi? What is in Ward 2? What is in Ward 3 in John Howard? What is in Ward 4? We were able to put all the things in order,” he said.

Liswaniso said the opposition to UPND was strong in Chawama.

He said Chawama residents told him that his party would lose because of many factors.

“I would say also that the opposition was strong, especially in Ward 2. They [PF] were very strong. Especially the late president Edgar Chagwa Lungu and the PF. They were very strong,” Liswaniso said

It was hard for the UPND to penetrate Chawama, though it had aimed to win the seat.

“The issue is we don’t go to an election thinking you are going to lose. It’s how people receive you. But there are certain areas where we could feel that here it’s hard. People really need to be calm. We were feeling that we can carry the day. You know, when you go to the battle, all of you are feeling that you are going to win it, because you are being received. You are being given an opportunity,” Liswaniso said.

KAMBWILI CALLS ON SPEAKER MUTTI TO STRIP CHABINGA OF LEADER OF OPPOSITION POST

KAMBWILI CALLS ON SPEAKER MUTTI TO STRIP CHABINGA OF LEADER OF OPPOSITION POST

By: Thomas Afroman Mwale

The Patriotic Front (PF) faction led by Given Lubinda has appealed to Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti to withdraw recognition of Mafinga Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament following the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of a petition to declare the Matero Constituency seat vacant.

PF presidential hopeful Chishimba Kambwili said while the Speaker’s decision not to declare Miles Sampa’s seat vacant is commendable, she should equally remove Mr Chabinga from the position of Leader of the Opposition.

Mr Kambwili argued that Mr Chabinga was not elected by the party to hold the position and therefore lacks legitimacy  adding that corrective action should be taken immediately Parliament resumes sittings.

Meanwhile, PF Acting President Given Lubinda has also praised Speaker Mutti’s decision, stating that for the first time in Zambia’s history, the Speaker made the right call by not declaring the Matero Constituency seat vacant.

KANTANSHI MP DUMPS PF AS HE EXPLORES OTHER PARTIES FOR ADOPTION AHEAD OF AUGUST POLLS

KANTANSHI MP DUMPS PF AS HE EXPLORES OTHER PARTIES FOR ADOPTION AHEAD OF AUGUST POLLS

PATRIOTIC Front Kantanshi Member of Parliament Anthony Mumba has announced that he will not contest this year’s general elections on the PF ticket.

Mr. Mumba has cited persistent party wrangles and mistreatment over the past five years as reasons for his decision.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mumba has described his tenure in the PF as “torturous”, stating that he can no longer endure the treatment he has received, particularly the ridicule he claims to have faced whenever his views appeared to align with those of the UPND government.

He says he will carefully assess various political options before deciding which party ticket he will contest on, excluding the PF.

Mr. Mumba says the ruling UPND is among the parties he may consider joining, or he may run as an independent candidate.

Matero Court Ruling Exposes the False Claim to PF Ownership and Sends a Warning to the Ruling Party

Matero Court Ruling Exposes the False Claim to PF Ownership and Sends a Warning to the Ruling Party

By Michael Zephaniah Phiri Political Activist

The Constitutional Court’s decision to dismiss the petition seeking to declare the Matero parliamentary seat vacant and to order that each party bears its own costs has delivered a decisive political message that extends far beyond the courtroom. It has exposed the hollow claims of authority by Mr. Robert Chabinga and Mr. Morgan Ngona and reaffirmed a fundamental truth: the Patriotic Front (PF) cannot be hijacked through litigation, manipulation, or political engineering.

This ruling is a clear rejection of the narrative that the PF belongs to a small group of individuals propped up by external interests. Had Mr. Chabinga and Mr. Ngona genuinely commanded legitimate control over the party, the courts would have reflected that reality. Instead, the judgment underscores what PF members and supporters have consistently asserted that party legitimacy is derived from the people, not from repeated trips to court.

*Faith, Gratitude, and the Voice of the People*

Following the ruling, Hon. Miles Mbempe Sampa expressed heartfelt gratitude to PF members across the country and to senior party leadership who stood firm throughout more than a year of sustained legal pressure. He specifically thanked PF President Hon. Given Lubinda, National Chairperson Hon. Jean Katapa, and senior party leader Hon. Chishimba Kambwili for their steadfast support and leadership during a period marked by deliberate attempts to destabilize the party.

Hon. Sampa also thanked God for making it possible for him to remain the duly elected Member of Parliament for Matero, stating that the court’s decision reflects not only legal correctness but also the will of the people of Matero, who have consistently rejected imposed leadership and political interference.

PF President Hon. Given Lubinda echoed these sentiments, thanking God and describing the ruling as historic. He noted that, despite being a minority judgment, it marked the first time the Constitutional Court had issued such a ruling in circumstances so deeply tied to internal party democracy and voter sovereignty.

“This ruling is historic,” President Lubinda stated, “because it confirms that the courts cannot be used to override the will of the people.”

*Matero: The Grassroots Reality the Ruling Party Fears*

Matero remains politically significant precisely because Hon. Miles Sampa commands genuine grassroots support. His influence is not manufactured through press statements or court filings; it is built through consistent engagement with the people on the ground. This is the reality that has unsettled both the ruling UPND government and its political proxies within PF disputes.

The persistent legal attacks on Hon. Sampa and the PF reveal a strategy aimed not at justice, but at political attrition an attempt to exhaust the opposition through the courts after failing to defeat it politically.

*Exposing the Chabinga–Ngona Agenda*

If Mr. Chabinga and Mr. Ngona were sincere and principled actors within the Patriotic Front, they would have withdrawn all court cases affecting the party and allowed internal democratic processes to function. Instead, their continued reliance on litigation has only exposed an agenda disconnected from the party’s membership and grassroots base.

Their strategy has failed. The court’s decision has stripped away the illusion of legitimacy and confirmed that the true and genuine PF leadership is that which enjoys the confidence of its members and reflects the values and vision of the party’s founding principles.

*A Direct Warning to the Ruling Party*

President Given Lubinda further stated firmly and without ambiguity that dragging the Patriotic Front through endless court battles will not weaken its membership or erode its support. He emphasized that PF supporters remain resolute and unmoved by legal harassment.

He pointed out that Hon. Miles Sampa has been subjected to court proceedings for over one year, yet despite these prolonged attempts to frustrate his mandate, the court has now spoken in line with the will of the people of Matero. According to President Lubinda, this outcome exposes the futility of using legal processes to overturn democratic choices.

President Lubinda issued a stern warning to the ruling UPND government: keeping the PF permanently in court is a dangerous and self-defeating political strategy. Citizens did not vote for the UPND to dismantle the opposition or silence alternative voices. They voted for leadership, governance, and national development.

“Using state power and court processes to fight the opposition will only deepen public mistrust,” President Lubinda stated. “The ruling party is already losing credibility because it has betrayed the mandate given to it by the people who voted for change, not for the destruction of the Patriotic Front.”

In conclusion, the dismissal of the Matero petition is more than a legal outcome; it is a political reckoning. It confirms that the Patriotic Front cannot be captured through the courts, nor can its leadership be imposed by convenience or coercion.

The PF remains a mass-based, people-driven movement whose legitimacy lies with its members and supporters across the country. Those who continue to ignore this reality do so at their own political peril.

Those who have eyes can see clearly: the courts have spoken, the people have spoken, and history is recording who stands on the side of democracy and who does not.
