Republican dares party to vote as Trump demands jail for flag burners

0

President Donald Trump wants to curtail a specific First Amendment right in response to anti-deportation protests exploding in Los Angeles. But at least one Republican lawmaker remains adamantly opposed — and dared him to put it up for a vote.

Earlier this week, Trump demanded that people who burn the American flag in the street should receive “automatic” jail sentences of one year.

“I happen to think if you burn an American flag — because they were burning a lot of flags in Los Angeles — I think you go to jail for one year,” said Trump. “Just automatic.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), however, had a simple message in response to that idea in a post to X on Wednesday.

“Bring this bill to the floor,” wrote Massie, a hardcore antigovernment lawmaker whose laissez-faire beliefs and sincere desire for a small and balanced federal budget often clash with the priorities of his party. “This is an easy No vote for anyone who took their oath to the Constitution seriously.”

The idea of prosecuting flag-burning has been perennial in right-wing politics, with several pushes and attempts for this over the years.

However, federal courts have established that burning the American flag, provided that it doesn’t cause damage to others’ property, is protected political speech under the First Amendment. This was enshrined into case law in Texas v. Johnson, the landmark 1989 Supreme Court decision that upheld the overturning of a Texas “flag desecration” law that had been used against a demonstrator who was protesting the Ronald Reagan administration.

Trump has escalated the conflict against protesters in Los Angeles over the last week, sending in the National Guard and Marines in what he insists is a necessary attempt to restore order, which California officials have blasted as an unconstitutional response.

Mandela demands legal action against Afrikaners granted U.S. asylum

Mandela demands legal action against Afrikaners granted U.S. asylum

Mayibuye Melisizwe Mandela, a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and great-grandson of Nelson Mandela, has called for treason charges against Afrikaners granted refugee status in the United States.

Mandela, chair of the Melisizwe Mandela Foundation, also demands the revocation of their South African citizenship, accusing them of fabricating claims of persecution to justify their resettlement.

The controversy stems from a February 2025 executive order by US President Donald Trump, which fast-tracked refugee status for 49 Afrikaners, citing alleged land seizures and racial violence in South Africa.

Mandela and South African officials, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, have rejected these claims as a false narrative of “white genocide.” Ramaphosa labeled the refugees “cowards,” while Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni emphasized that police statistics show no evidence of systemic violence against Afrikaners, undermining their eligibility under the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Mandela’s foundation is reportedly preparing a legal case against the group, arguing their actions defame South Africa’s image.

Daughter sentenced to life for orchestrating father’s murder

Daughter sentenced to life for orchestrating father’s murder

The Polokwane High Court has sentenced 28-year-old Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape to life imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the cold-blooded murder of her father, Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape, a senior official in the Limpopo Department of Education.

Dr Mehlape was gunned down in his Mankweng home on 28 December 2023. The court found that his daughter had conspired to kill him, influenced by claims from a traditional healer that her father had used “muthi” to cause her mother’s death.

In a detailed confession, Mehlape admitted to hiring a contract killer for R200,000, enlisting the help of several relatives. On the night of the murder, she unlocked the home’s gate and door, allowing the assailants to ambush her father in his bedroom. He was shot multiple times and robbed of valuables, including his cellphone.

She was convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances under the Criminal Procedure Act and received a life sentence for murder and 15 years for robbery set to run concurrently.

Four co-accused, Tshepo Gabriel Ranoto, Hlologelo Klaas Mogotlane, Mahlodi Melida Mathole, and Michael Sello Molongoane will face trial separately in June 2025.

During sentencing, Mehlape expressed remorse, citing her role as a mother and longstanding conflict with her father. However, the State dismissed her apology as insincere, calling the crime “gruesome and heartless.”

SANDF troops return from DRC this Friday

Breaking news

SANDF troops return from DRC this Friday

The first group of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops will return from the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday, as part of a structured withdrawal announced by Defence Minister Angie Motshekga.

Over 2,000 SANDF personnel have been deployed in the DRC, supporting both MONUSCO and SAMIDRC missions amidst ongoing conflicts, including those with the M23 rebels, which have resulted in 14 soldier deaths earlier this year.

The returning troops will be welcomed at Air Force Base Bloemspruit by Minister Motshekga and military veterans, marking a shift towards diplomatic solutions in the region.

This withdrawal aligns with broader African-led peace efforts, reflecting South Africa’s commitment to regional stability while acknowledging the sacrifices made by its forces.

Trump sinks US popularity in new global survey

President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have been underwater since February — but it’s not just within America that his image is struggling. Around the globe, his behavior has caused a rapid deterioration of the entire country’s global image, Politico reported on Wednesday.

“Pew Research Center surveyed people in 24 countries, including 10 in Europe, from late February through early April. It found that the share of respondents who view the U.S. favorably has dropped in most of them compared to the spring of 2024,” said the report. Additionally, “Respondents have little confidence in Trump as a world leader or in his ability to address global challenges, from wars in Ukraine and Gaza to climate change and U.S. immigration policies.”

Just about the only good news for Trump in the poll is that a majority of respondents worldwide also see him as a “strong leader” — they just don’t agree with his policies on virtually anything, and also view him as “dangerous” and “arrogant.”

Trump beat out China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin for confidence, at 34 percent vs 25 percent and 16 percent, respectively, for the authoritarians. But Emmanuel Macron, the French president and the leader of a fellow democracy, vastly outperformed him with 46 percent.

The numbers echo what happened when Trump took office in 2017, when the United States also saw a global erosion of trust and confidence.

For his part, the president has raged about polls that show him underwater, publicly attacking the surveys recently done by The New York Times and The Washington Post.

“The Failing New York Times and the Washington ComPost, two ‘papers’ that have ruthlessly fought me for years, have each done Polls where a vast majority of those sampled are Democrats,” he wrote last week on his Truth Social platform. “In other words, the Polls, just like their writings, are RIGGED – It is not possible for a Republican to do well in such a Poll! They are ‘corrupt as hell.'”

Trump’s Treasury secretary gets brutal math lesson at hearing

0

President Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, had to get corrected multiple times on his fuzzy math about the economy during a heated hearing before the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

The hearing was at many points a mess, with Bessent, a former hedge fund manager, admitting Trump would “likely” cave on tariff deadlines yet again, and having to be told to stop interrupting lawmakers.

One of the most remarkable moments came when Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) held him to account for how sluggish the economy has been since Trump’s tariffs took effect, and Bessent unsuccessfully tried to deny this was the case.

Beyer noted that all the biggest periods of market strength during the Trump administration have always come when “the administration is in retreat from key policy areas … is this embarrassing?”

“It isn’t embarrassing,” said Bessent. “I’m sorry, Congressman, but you seem not to have seen the economic data. The GDP growth has been quite substantial, job growth is solid—”

“GDP growth is half what it was last year, sir,” Beyer interjected.

“The job growth is solid, and private sector job growth especially,” Bessent repeated.

“Job growth is a third what it was all last year, sir,” said Beyer.

“And if you’d like to talk about inflation, would you?” said Bessent.

Beyer said that inflation numbers look decent “so far,” but that all economic reports he is reading indicate “the impact of the tariffs” is not yet fully baked into prices.

Bessent has previously faced an avalanche of criticism for claiming that the federal workers the Trump administration is firing can just go find work in factories producing American-made goods.

Roger Stone blames Hillary Clinton after Elon Musk says Trump in Epstein files

0

Roger Stone blamed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after Elon Musk said President Donald Trump was connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual trafficking case.

During a Wednesday interview on Real America’s Voice, Stone told host Emily Finn that Musk and Trump would eventually “get back together” despite Musk’s falling out with the president.

“He’s retracted some of his crazier claims that Trump is in the Epstein files,” Stone said. “Donald Trump broke with Epstein prior to Epstein being exposed and charged in Florida with sex crimes.”

“The Clintons continued to take money from him and to socialize with him after his conviction in Florida and before he was re-indicted on federal charges,” he insisted. “Trump had banned Epstein from his life. So there is nothing to this.”

“It is a recycling of a charge built by Hillary Clinton to distract from the Clintons’ relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, because they took millions of dollars from him… This was a vicious smear, started by the Clintons. I see that Elon has now taken that post down.”

After a dispute over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” Musk posted on X that Trump was “in the Epstein files.” He later appeared to delete the post.

Trump met with dueling boos and cheers at Kennedy Center’s ‘Les Mis’ performance

0

A chorus of loud boos and cheers greeted President Donald Trump on Wednesday night at the newly MAGAfied John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where Trump was set to watch “Les Misérables.”

Video posted on X by Reuters’ White House Correspondent Jeff Mason showed Trump take his seat in the direct center of the second level of the theater. As Trump waved to fellow attendees, loud cheers erupted, followed by dueling — and equally loud — boos.

The crowd broke out into chants of “U.S.A.” as the president took his seat.

Trump dismissed the entire board of trustees for the Kennedy Center, including its long-serving chair. He then appointed himself as chairman in February and installed Richard Grenell as interim executive director and later president.

Several actors from the touring production of “Les Misérables” planned to boycott the performance at the Kennedy Center over Trump and Vice President JD Vance’s appearance. Wednesday marked Trump’s first visit to the center since he took control of the institution and vowed to do away with so-called “woke” programming, such as drag shows.

Kim Kardashian declares war on Trump admin: ‘Can’t turn a blind eye’

Kim Kardashian leapt into the escalating public debate over what she called President Donald Trump’s “inhumane” immigration policies in a social media post blasting the MAGA administration and demanding an end to ICE raids that the reality star said are tearing families apart.

Kardashian, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles County, took to Instagram on Tuesday to slam the Trump White House’s intensified immigration crackdown, which has sparked days of protests in Los Angeles and other cities nationwide, according to MSNBC.

“When we’re told that ICE exists to keep our country safe and remove violent criminals — great,” Kardashian wrote to her 356 million Instagram followers. “But when we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up. We have to do what’s right.”

Kardashian continued by saying that she has seen firsthand “how deeply immigrants are woven into the fabric of this city.”

“They are our neighbors, friends, classmates, co-workers and family,” she said.

She added, “We can’t turn a blind eye when fear and injustice keep people from living their lives freely and safely.”

“There HAS to be a BETTER way,” she wrote.

The sharp rebuke from the billionaire reality star, who announced in May she had obtained her law degree, “may have come as a surprise to some,” given her past efforts with Trump surrounding criminal justice reform, MSNBC reported.

“During the president’s first term, Kardashian lobbied him to commute the sentence of Alice Johnson, a grandmother who was serving life without the possibility of parole for a nonviolent drug offense,” according to MSNBC. “In 2018, Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence and, in 2020, granted her a full pardon. Johnson currently serves as Trump’s ‘pardon czar.’”

But Kardashian made clear her stance on the Trump administration’s stepped-up immigration raids.

“No matter where you fall politically, it’s clear that our communities thrive because of the contributions of immigrants,” she wrote Tuesday.

Mnangagwa meets IMF delegation amid worsening economic crisis

0

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday held a high-level meeting with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation currently in Zimbabwe for an Article IV Consultation, as the country grapples with deepening economic turmoil marked by an artificial exchange rate, a debilitating liquidity crunch, and a fragile local currency.

The IMF mission, led by Wojciech Maliszewski, is in the country to assess Zimbabwe’s economic performance and policy direction. The consultation comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s economic indicators are flashing red despite claims of stability by monetary authorities. The IMF team is expected to meet with Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube, Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor John Mushayavanhu, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Martin Rushwaya, and other senior government and central bank officials. They will also hold consultations with Members of Parliament, civil society, the private sector, and international development partners.

The visit forms part of the IMF’s regular Article IV Consultations, which provide a comprehensive assessment of member countries’ economic health. This mission will also evaluate progress on the Staff Monitored Programme (SMP) – a precursor to any debt restructuring or financial support – and examine Zimbabwe’s broader macroeconomic policies.

While the Reserve Bank insists the newly introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency is performing well, economic realities on the ground paint a far grimmer picture. Companies are collapsing under the weight of cash shortages, unemployment is rising, and inflation – though suppressed on paper – continues to erode household incomes. Mushayavanhu’s tight monetary policy has been credited with reining in headline inflation, but critics argue that it has done so at the cost of liquidity and economic growth.

“The economy is being choked by excessive efforts to maintain a rigid exchange rate,” an economist familiar with the consultations said. “The ZiG’s apparent stability is not organic; it’s imposed through strict controls and a deliberate squeeze on money supply. This is unsustainable and harmful.”

Since the introduction of the ZiG in April 2024, the currency has struggled to gain public confidence and utility in daily transactions. Analysts say the combination of high debt overhang, rigid monetary controls, and deteriorating economic conditions has only worsened poverty levels, driven mass migration, and destabilised the private sector.

Speaking in a video released by the Presidential Communications Department, Finance Minister Ncube acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “The IMF Mission has come here for two main purposes,” he said. “One is to conduct the Article IV Consultation and assess the state of the economy – to talk about our development trajectory. The second is to discuss the Staff Monitored Programme, which is a critical step in our arrears clearance roadmap. We’ve also been discussing how to maintain the fiscal discipline we initiated and ensure expenditure remains within our means.”

The IMF last conducted an Article IV mission in Zimbabwe earlier this year, from 30 January to 13 February. Discussions then centred on macroeconomic stability and the need for structural reforms, including the resolution of longstanding debt arrears, which have blocked Zimbabwe’s access to international financing.

As the IMF team continues its mission in Harare, pressure is mounting on the government to adopt more sustainable policies that balance inflation control with economic growth and public welfare. For now, however, the country remains stuck in a cycle of suppressed figures, failing businesses, and eroding livelihoods – with little relief in sight.

More Details Emerge After Ex-Minister Brutally Attacked In Love Triangle

Shocking Details Emerge After Ex-Minister Stabbed In Love Row

Former Cabinet Minister Joel Gabbuza is still battling for his life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo following a violent knife and axe attack in what sources say was a revenge ambush linked to a suspected love triangle.

The 62-year-old former Binga South MP was stabbed more than a dozen times after allegedly being caught red-handed with a married woman in her rural homestead.

“He was attacked in the early hours of Friday, June 7, by two men who used knives and an axe,” confirmed National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

“The suspects are still on the run, but investigations are underway.”

New details have emerged showing the attack on the ex-minister was not random—it was premeditated.

According to villagers in Siamakwa Village, Ward 18, Gabbuza had given the woman a lift earlier that day. But instead of returning home, he decided to spend the night at her homestead.

“They waited for him to fall asleep,” said one witness.

“Then they crept in under the cover of darkness, slashed his tyres, and entered the room while he was asleep.”

Reports say the two men—believed to be the woman’s estranged husband and his cousin—used a knife and axe in the frenzied attack. Gabbuza suffered deep lacerations to his head and hands.

“He was bleeding heavily and drifting in and out of consciousness,” said a family friend.

“He was rushed to Hwange Colliery Hospital before being transferred to Bulawayo for urgent surgery.”

The attackers reportedly fled immediately after the assault, disappearing into the night.

Political heavyweight in critical condition
Gabbuza, who served as Minister of Water Resources during the 2009–2013 GNU era, remains in a critical state. He has undergone emergency surgery at Mpilo Hospital and is being closely monitored.

Gabbuza was recalled from Parliament in October 2023 but remained active in Matabeleland North politics. His long-standing influence in the Binga community has made the news of the attack all the more shocking.

“This has shaken the entire village. Everyone is talking about it,” said a local shopkeeper.
“Some blame the attackers, some say the situation was avoidable, but everyone agrees it went too far.”

Police have appealed for information from the public to assist in tracking the two suspects.

“We urge anyone with knowledge of the suspects’ whereabouts to come forward,”
said Commissioner Nyathi.

As investigations continue, villagers remain divided. Some express sympathy for the politician, while others believe personal choices may have played a role.

“It’s a sad story,” said a Tinde elder. “But nothing justifies this level of violence.”

Walter Mzembi Returns to Zimbabwe and Meets Mnangagwa at State House After Years in Exile

hey say in politics there are no real enemies, just shifting alliances, and Walter Mzembi’s return to Zimbabwe and meeting with Mnangagwa proves exactly that.

Walter Mzembi Returns to Zimbabwe and Meets Mnangagwa at State House
The former Foreign Affairs Minister, who fled the country after the 2017 coup that ousted Robert Mugabe, is back on home soil. According to Nehanda Radio, Mzembi quietly met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Wednesday, 11 June 2025.

Sources told the publication that Mzembi came from Zambia, where he had been living in exile following previous stints in Eswatini, where he was granted asylum, and South Africa.

Mzembi was one of several ministers linked to the G40 faction and considered loyal to Mugabe, who fled Zimbabwe after Mnangagwa came to power. His return now, and meeting with the very man he once opposed, has raised eyebrows.

Mixed Reactions from Zimbabweans
After the news broke on X (formerly Twitter), many Zimbabweans were quick to share their thoughts. Some users noted that Mzembi had been softening his tone toward Mnangagwa on social media, so this meeting wasn’t a total shock. Others praised Mnangagwa for welcoming back a former opponent, calling it a sign of leadership.

But not everyone was convinced. Some believed Mzembi’s return had less to do with unity and more to do with securing his interests. A few even suggested that Grace Mugabe or influential religious figures like Prophet Makandiwa may have had a hand in the political thawing.

Here are some of the reactions:

@ZimParrot:

@CadreShangrila:

NdiShumba avo. President EDM is a unifying leader. They’re all back.

@iamfarffy:

I once saw how @waltermzembi was becoming very soft with ED & I wondered why. Here is the answer. Everyone wants to be included, even in opposition; we have so many wolves in sheep’s clothing.

@RLuwanika:

Never took them seriously, I knew they were just trying to find their way back to enjoy their loot. They never had people at heart. Grace could be playing a major role in this. She has been very visible with ED now.

@NyobvoTbango:

Follow what Prophet Makandiwa mentioned recently. He said that Walter Mzembi is harmless. Just take note that Prophet Makandiwa influences some of the happenings in Zimbabwean politics. In fact, some prophets are listened to by the government.

Zimbabwe MPs Want Pitbulls Banned After Deadly Harare Attack

Members of Parliament have renewed calls for a nationwide ban on Pitbulls following a recent brutal attack in Bluff Hill, Harare, where the aggressive breed killed a man.

During a parliamentary question-and-answer session on Wednesday, 5 June 2025, legislators said the breed poses a serious risk to public safety and should be outlawed. They argued that Pitbulls are unpredictable and more dangerous than other dogs, often ignoring commands from their owners.

Zimbabwe MPs Want Pitbulls Banned After Deadly Harare Attack
Leading the charge was Zanu PF MP for Goromonzi West, Biata Beatrice Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga, who compared Pitbulls to wild animals, warning that people now fear for their lives even in residential areas.

“When moving in the bush we fear being killed by wild animals but when we are moving in the residential areas there are dogs such as the Pitbull. The Pitbull is killing people. That dog does not listen to instructions from the owner. What is the government policy on the keeping of animals, in particular dogs like the Pitbull?” Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga asked.

In response, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi explained that the law already regulates dog ownership through municipal licensing. He said households are limited in how many dogs they can keep, and some areas do not allow dogs at all. The person responsible for the recent fatal attack was arrested because they breached these laws, he said.

“That law clearly states the number of dogs which are allowed in each and every household in towns. In other areas there are no dogs which are allowed. That is why the individual who kept a Pitbull which killed someone was arrested. The police apprehended him because it was against the law. The Pitbull needs a licence which is different from other types of dogs because it is a very vicious dog,” Ziyambi said.

However, Karimatsenga-Nyamupinga was not convinced. She argued that licences alone won’t prevent these tragedies and suggested that Pitbulls, which she claimed can “lose their memory,” should be banned outright.

“Yes, the licence can be there, but we have that type of dog which loses its memory. What are we trying to say if we are allowing people to keep dogs which lose their memory? What are we trying to say about the lives of people?” the MP stated.

Zimbabwe to Ban Lithium Concentrate Exports by 2027 to Boost Local Processing

Zimbabwe to Ban Lithium Concentrate Exports by 2027 to Boost Local Processing

Zimbabwe has announced that it will ban the export of lithium concentrates starting in January 2027, as part of efforts to build more value within its borders and drive local beneficiation. This is the latest step in the government’s ongoing push to make sure the country earns more from its vast mineral wealth.

Mines Minister Winston Chitando confirmed the new policy during a press briefing on Tuesday following a cabinet meeting.

Zimbabwe, Africa’s leading producer of lithium—a key component in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage—already banned the export of raw lithium ore in 2022. However, many lithium mining companies, mainly from China, have continued to ship lithium concentrates abroad for further processing.

That will soon change.

Chitando explained that two major lithium sulphate plants are currently under construction at mines owned by Chinese firms. One is at Bikita Minerals, operated by Sinomine, and the other at Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, owned by Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt.

Lithium sulphate is a semi-processed product that can be further refined into battery-grade materials like lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate—key ingredients in battery manufacturing. With this new infrastructure coming online, Zimbabwe now wants to stop the export of concentrates altogether.

“Because of that capacity which is now in the country, the export of all lithium concentrates will be banned from January 2027,” Chitando said.

One of the married woman in Balthazar’s viral video drag him to court

Cristina, one of the married woman seen in the Balthazar’s viral video has revealed her intentions to take the politician to court.

Speaking for the first time since the release of the videos, she revealed that she and Baltasar agreed that the videos will be deleted after they recorded it.

So it kind of took her off balance when she woke up one day to see the videos all over social media, meaning, Baltasar didn’t delete them as promised.

Due to that, she has decided filed for a complaint against him for breech of agreement and is ready to get to the bottom of the whole thing.

She said, “The videos I see circulating are videos that were not consented to, and on the few occasions they were, they were deleted after viewing.“

“So, I don’t know where these images that I am now seeing are coming from, and I want to know their source. That’s why I am here filing a complaint against him.“

“We were a couple, so I believe that anything can happen in the bedroom; you can do anything with your partner there.”

“There’s an image they say is circulating. I was there myself when he and I were deleting that image, so I don’t know where it’s coming from now.”

South African Airways pilot resigns after flying for 20 years with fake license

A pilot of South African Airways has resigned after operating planes for the airline with a fake license for over 20 years.

William Chandler, a former senior pilot at South African Airways (SAA), was found to have flown commercial planes for over 20 years with a forged Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL).

The discovery was made following a “reportable incident” on a November 2018 flight (SA206) from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Frankfurt, Germany.

Chandler was the monitoring pilot for Airbus A340-600, which made erratic maneuvers after encountering turbulence over the Swiss Alps.

According to reports Chandler joined SAA as a flight engineer before becoming a pilot in 1994. He held only a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), which permitted him to operate smaller aircraft but not the long-haul international flights he was assigned to.

The ATPL, which requires 1,500 hours of flight time, including 100 hours at night, along with rigorous technical and medical exams, was fraudulently misrepresented by Chandler.

He allegedly altered documents issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) to falsely claim possession of the advanced license.

The incident in November 2018 prompted a routine safety investigation, during which Chandler’s credentials were scrutinized, revealing the forgery.

SAA has since filed criminal fraud charges against Chandler, who was arrested on March 11, 2019, and released on R5,000 bail, with a court appearance scheduled for May 15, 2019.

The airline is seeking to recover “millions of rand” in salary, overtime, and benefits, including perks like free airfares for extended family members, which Chandler earned under false pretenses.

No updates on the case has been shared since 2021. It is believed that the case is still unresolved.

Trump announces breakthrough in trade talks with China, US to impose 55% on Chinese goods in new agreement

0

President Donald Trump has announced the finalization of a trade deal with between the United States and China.

The deal is now subject to final approval between himself and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Key details includes Tariff Adjustments with Trump announces the U.S. will impose a 55% tariff on Chinese imports.

China will apply a 10% tariff on American goods. This follows a temporary 90-day tariff reduction agreement back in May.

In an X post, President Donald Trump wrote:

“OUR DEAL WITH CHINA IS DONE, SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL WITH PRESIDENT XI AND ME. FULL MAGNETS, AND ANY NECESSARY RARE EARTHS, WILL BE SUPPLIED, UP FRONT, BY CHINA. LIKEWISE, WE WILL PROVIDE TO CHINA WHAT WAS AGREED TO, INCLUDING CHINESE STUDENTS USING OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD WITH ME!). WE ARE GETTING A TOTAL OF 55% TARIFFS, CHINA IS GETTING 10%. RELATIONSHIP IS EXCELLENT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!”

It is important to note that before the new trade deal announced by Donald Trump, tariffs on Chinese goods were 30%, and China’s tariffs on U.S. goods were 10%,.

After the deal, the United States tariffs rose to 55%, while China’s own remained at 10%.

This made many commentators across the media came into conclusion that the United States got the better deal.

The huge majority stake Mali will pocket in new gold refinery deal with Russia’s Yadran revealed

0

Mali is taking a significant step toward reshaping its gold industry by securing majority ownership 62% in a national gold refinery built in partnership with Russian company Yadran, according to a report by Efofin Agency.

Announced officially by the Council of Ministers back in may, the project marks a strategic pivot to keep more of the country’s gold value chain within its borders.

Developed through close collaboration with Yadran, the facility is expected to process up to 200 tons of gold annually.

Until now, much of Mali’s industrial gold output has been shipped abroad mostly to Switzerland for refining.

With this new partnership, Mali aims to shift that dynamic and root more of the economic benefits locally.

The move builds on an agreement signed in 2024 and reflects a broader national effort to integrate the mining sector more fully into Mali’s economy.

Gold is Mali’s top export and a key source of public revenue, accounting for around 10% of GDP. In 2024 alone, industrial production reached roughly 51 tons.

More than 100 illegal immigrants detained by ICE agents in Omaha, Nebraska

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted a significant workplace enforcement operation at Glenn Valley Foods in Omaha, Nebraska.

The enforcement team detained approximately 80 to 100 individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.

The operation has been described as the largest of its kind in Nebraska since the start of the current presidential administration.

It is well known the Trump administration targeted employees at the meat processing plant, many of whom were allegedly using fake or stolen identities.

ICE agents arrived around with a civil warrant related to stolen identities, screening 97 employees.

The company’s owner, Gary Rohwer, stated that Glenn Valley Foods fully cooperated with the operation and had used E-Verify to check employee eligibility, asserting the company faced no charges.

Local law enforcement blocked off a section of the Streets during the operation, and community advocates reported seeing detainees loaded into vans and a bus.

The mayor’s office confirmed the detentions, and Congressman Don Bacon’s office noted ICE’s focus on identity fraud.

Protests and clashes with authorities occurred outside the facility, reflecting community tensions. ICE emphasized that only family members could obtain detainee information via a dedicated hotline.

Jubilant Burkinabes welcome army heroes who liberated the area of terrorists, and provided supply to local inhabitants

Some citizens of Burkina Faso in areas like Pissila and Tapoa have been shown celebrating their armed forces for liberating towns from terrorist control and providing supplies.

The Burkinabe military, under Captain Ibrahim Traoré since the 2022 coup, has prioritized aggressive counterterrorism.

Observations has it that it often rely on trained VDP militias, which has fueled both victories and social tensions.

While some communities celebrate the liberation of their towns, others face violence and ethnic targeting, particularly Fulani populations accused of collaborating with jihadists.

In fac, the situation in Burkina Faso is complex but gained local support for the military in some regions.

The country has for the past year witnessed great developments under the Captain Ibrahim Traore administration.

One of the most celebrated part of their development is their ability to move out french troops out of the country.

They have also been celebrated across the entire continent for localizing some industries and not given western powers the chance to exploit their natural resources.

Gen. Michael Langley calls on fragile African states to take greater ownership of their security

US Africa Command chief Gen. Michael Langley has called on fragile African states to take greater security ownership.

Analysts interpret this move as part of a broader shift in the Trump administration’s defense strategy, which emphasizes homeland security and a reduced overseas military presence.

The US also recently announced that they are ending their military presence in Africa ending its service in countries like Niger and Sudan.

During the African Lion exercise, which is the largest joint training event on the continent, the need for a strategic shift became evident.

Marine General Michael Langley stated in an interview with the Associated Press, “We need to ensure our partners reach a level of independent operations.”

“We have our set priorities now — protecting the homeland. And we’re also looking for other countries to contribute to some of these global instability areas,” he said, referencing U.S. support for Sudan.

This comment comes as Russia and China continue to establish their military presence in Africa region, eliminating the US in the process.

Russian mercenaries are solidifying their position as the preferred security partner across North, West, and Central Africa.

Russia has expanded its presence through the Wagner Group, now known as the Africa Corps, providing security support and resource access in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Sudan.

African nations are now increasingly turning to Moscow for rapid security assistance, often viewing it as less intrusive than Western demands for democratic reforms.

China has initiated a comprehensive training program for African militaries. China, through its Belt and Road Initiative, has invested over $182 billion in loans across 53 African nations since 2001.

Russia and North Korea to launch direct train service linking Moscow and Pyongyang

0

Russia and North Korea have resumed direct passenger train service between Moscow and Pyongyang after a four-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The train which is Operated by Korean State Railway, runs twice monthly, covering over 10,000 km in eight days, making it the world’s longest direct rail journey.

The route involves a North Korean railcar attached to the Moscow-Vladivostok train, reattached at Ussuriysk to a train to Khasan, then crossing into North Korea at Tumangang for the final leg to Pyongyang.

A separate service between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk restarts on June 19, running once monthly. The trains offer comfortable sleeper compartments, with stops at major stations like Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Novosibirsk.

This resumption aligns with strengthened Russia-North Korea ties, including a 2024 strategic partnership treaty and military cooperation, with North Korea reportedly sending troops and weapons to support Russia’s efforts in Ukraine.

A Vladivostok-Rason service also operates, and over 1,000 Russian tourists visited North Korea in 2024, reflecting growing tourism interest.

However, the route is primarily for Russian and North Korean citizens, with limited access for foreigners, who must coordinate with specialized tour agencies like Koryo Tours due to North Korea’s strict travel regulations.

BRITISH MOTHER’S HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT THEIR SONS WILL HAVE TO DIE FOR NATO AGAINST RUSSIA NOT LONG FROM NOW FORMER UKRAINIAN FOREIGN MINISTER.

By CIC International Affairs.

BRITISH MOTHER’S HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT THEIR SONS WILL HAVE TO DIE FOR NATO AGAINST RUSSIA NOT LONG FROM NOW FORMER UKRAINIAN FOREIGN MINISTER.

Mothers in Britain will soon have to make an inconceivable choice – send their sons to fight against Russian soldiers in Europe , or suffer the end of Nato, Ukraine’s former foreign minister has said

Dmytro Kuleba issued the warning only a few hours after Kyiv faced what he described as ‘the worst drone assault’ since the start of the invasion.

He spoke to Metro exclusively about Vladimir Putin ’s goal to ‘expose’ the ‘falsehood’ of the collective security commitment that binds members of the military alliance, and Europe’s ‘weaknesses’ .

The politician said: ‘Putin may invade Nato territory soon – so now what? Is Nato going to send a division to fight back?

‘The first day that Nato will spend on deliberating whether to trigger Article 5 or not, and how to respond, will be the end of the alliance.

‘The first day the EU – which is no big bother to England – is going to spend discussing its response to Russia , is going to be the end of it too.

‘This is what Putin is pursuing, because he hates Ukraine – but he deeply despises Europe too. It is a very deep conviction.’

Kuleba is not the only one to sound an alarm over the future of Europe and Nato.
Just last week, Nato secretary general Mark Rutte said Russia may be ready to attack the alliance within five years, calling for a ‘quantum leap’ in defence spending and industrial mobilisation to avert the conflict.

Putin’s war machine has been speeding up. On April 1, Russia launched its largest conscription drive with the goal of enlisting 160,000 men. Drone production has also been taking centre-stage.
Away from a military spend increase, Kuleba stressed that the ‘real focus’ should be on developing ‘the will to defend yourself’ in Europeans.

He said: ‘Many people believe that the real test for Nato is whether the US is going to fight for Europe.
‘The real test will be whether British mothers will actually accept that their sons have to die for Finland or Estonia or Poland. If they don’t, there is no Nato.

‘This is is how World War II started. “Why fight for Danzig [now the city of Gdańsk]? Let’s give it to Hitler, it is just a city in Poland. Why should we die for it?” That was the question asked by western European nations [at the time].
‘And this is exactly the question that Putin is going to pose to Nato. Europe is already spending money on weapons, but it has to do so much faster.
‘But the real question is, who is going to tell the voters that the threat of the war is real?’

Kuleba’s warnings come from a wealth of experience. Before the beginning of the war, no one in Ukraine – and the rest of Europe – did actually believe that Russia would invade and proceed to massacre tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers.
He also made the mistake of thinking that after a certain number of Russian losses in Ukraine  ‘like 10,000 and 20,000 soldiers’ – Putin would eventually withdraw.

It is estimated that there have been one million Russian soldiers killed and wounded since the conflict began in Feburary 2022.

It is this ‘same pattern of behaviour’ – blindly trusting that Putin ‘would not dare’ to attack – that Kuleba sees across Europe.
He said: ‘Telling the truth to people about the prospect of war in Europe is what requires more attention than anything else…

‘People in Britain or any other country can listen to what I’m saying or they can decide that I am a warmongering Ukrainian who is trying to pull them into my war.
‘I am perfectly fine with any choice they make. What I can say, what I can urge them, is not to repeat our mistakes.

‘The biggest mistake Ukraine made was that we did not believe that this can happen to us on this scale. We, in Ukraine, also believed that it is not going to happen to us because Putin would never dare to do it.

‘So this is the mistake that people are making. I look around in Europe and I just see the same pattern happening. The same pattern of behaviour.

‘Do you think that if Ukraine was able to attack airfields in Russia, 1,000 miles away from Ukraine, Russia is not able to attack any piece of infrastructure in any European country? That would be a very, very big mistake to think so.’

Lungu family hints alternative funeral arrangements as they keep Zambians guessing

Lungu family hints alternative funeral arrangements as they keep Zambians guessing

THE country has speculation mode after Edgar Lungu’s family hinted they were considering “alternative” funeral arrangements for the later former president.

Last Saturday, government declared seven days of mourning

in honour of the former president who died a week ago in a South African hospital.

Lungu’s family had initially indicated his remains would arrive on Wednesday in time for a state funeral and eventual burial at presidential burial cite in Lusaka where five former Zambian heads of  state are buried.

However, Lungu’s body did not arrive yesterday as family spokesperson Makebi Zulu told mourners during a memorial service in Pretoria, South Africa on Tuesday that there had been a change of plan.

Zulu promised to announce the new date of repatriation later.

Today, Zulu held a three-minute presser in which he said the family had found it difficult to engage with government on how Lungu should be mourned.

“It was made known that the family had already put in place all logistics to address the wishes of the deceased that his mortal remains be conveyed by the family privately and not the government of the republic of Zambia and that President Hakainde Hichilema should not be anywhere near the body of Edgar Lungu for reasons that have since become common cause,” said Zulu.

He said the family was not okay with government’s desire to convey the mortal remains of Lungu in ways that suggest that they have no say in the arrangements.

“In the conveyance of the remains, it is the desire of the family that the conscious of the deceased should not be betrayed and that the death of sixth republican president does not repose any superior rights to the government, that exceed those of the family,” he said.

Zulu claimed that in the meetings between government and the family, the government changed positions on the proposals that they earlier said were agreeable after returning from consultations.

He said matters of conscience for both the deceased and family should not be sacrificed at the alter of convenience by the government.

“The family remains committed to the former president being mourned in a befitting manner by the nation. The public will be informed on alternative arrangements amongst the available options,” stated Zulu.

BURYING LUNGU IN SOUTH  AFRICA ALSO AN OPTION – FAMILY

BURYING LUNGU IN SA ALSO AN OPTION – FAMILY
… It’s not the family to conform to govt’s desires but viceversa

The late former president Edgar Lungu’s family says burying his remains in South Africa is an option if the government sustains its disrespect for his wish to have his body repatriated to Zambia by the family.

Speaking with Daily Revelation on information that the government was insisting on forcing its will to transport the former president’s remains, even with threats of closing the airspace to any private flight that would be arranged by the family, family spokesperson

DON’T REACT TO MOURNERS, THEY ARE AGGRIEVED, INONGE URGES GOVERNMENT

FORMER vice president Inonge Wina has advised government not to listen nor react to the mourners as they are devastated and aggrieved by the passing of former president Edgar Lungu.

Wina implored Government to approach the public outpouring of grief surrounding the passing of Lungu with empathy and restraint, recognising the deeply emotional state of those mourning his loss

According to her, the family and Patriotic Front members are deeply distressed by his passing, rendering them unable to assess the situation objectively.

Wina cautioned the government against reacting hastily to any remarks made by the grieving family or party officials, asserting that  these statements are likely fueled by the intense emotions of loss.

She was speaking on Crown TV interview monitored last evening.

The former veep stated that the family of the late president needs everyone’s unwavering support during this difficult time as they are navigating an immense sorrow hence, the need to be sensitive to their situation.

“The heart of a mourner is heavy and their spirit is confused. When you listen to someone who is mourning, they may say things that are not true hence, we must remember that the words spoken by those in mourning do not always reflect reality, as their emotions are clouding their judgment. This is the state we are in at this time,” she explained.

Wina urged the nation to refrain from perpetuating divisive rhetoric surrounding the passing of former president Lungu, imploring the people to promote unity during this time of national grief.

Wina described Lungu as a man of peace who never knew to quarrel with anyone, encouraging  the nation to honour his legacy by emulating his peaceful nature.

She implored those who are altering words that injure others to stop.

“Those that feel that this is the time to be excited because a leader who might have put a political threat is gone must refrain from such behavior,” she stated.

She called on the nation to pay tribute to President Lungu with peace and decorum, highlighting the importance of this gesture to the grieving family.

“Let us honour President Lungu in a peaceful manner because by doing so, the family will find solace in seeing us come together as a nation, rather than being divided by political differences,” she asserted.

“Those who are excited or aggrieved should [tame] their reactions, as these emotions may lead to actions that are regrettable and harmful to our society.”

In addition, Wina expressed hope that the Tonse alliance which Lungu worked hard to establish must be preserved and strengthened.

Wina had served alongside the sixth President Lungu from 2015 to 2021 as vice president.

UPND SECRETARIAT CAUTIONS AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED STATEMENTS ON THE DEMISE OF FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

UPND SECRETARIAT CAUTIONS AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED STATEMENTS ON THE DEMISE OF FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has issued a formal statement cautioning its members against making unauthorized public comments following the death of former Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In a notice released today the party’s Secretary General, Hon. Batuke Imenda, expressed concern over the proliferation of unsanctioned remarks made by individual party members.

“It has come to the attention of the Secretary General of the governing party that members have been issuing statements and comments on the demise of the former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu without clearance or authority from the UPND Secretariat,” Mr. Imenda said.

Calling for a unified and respectful approach to national mourning, Mr. Imenda emphasized the importance of discipline, protocol, and solemnity during this period. “As we are mourning as a nation, we need to conduct ourselves in a systematic and organized solemn manner, preach peace and unity,” he added.

The UPND has now directed that all official communication regarding the party’s position or participation during the mourning period will be issued solely by the Office of the Secretary General, Party Spokesperson and the Party Media Team. Official government statements will be communicated by the Secretary to the Cabinet or the Chief Government Spokesperson.

Furthermore, all members or affiliates who wish to make public comments on this matter must first seek express authorization from the Office of the Media Director, Mr. Mark Simuuwe.

“This should be taken as an official notification,” the statement stated.
The UPND reiterates its condolences to the family of the late President Lungu and calls on all Zambians to stand together in dignity and respect during this time of national loss.

ECL Joins Africa’s List of Controversial Presidential Burials

ECL Joins Africa’s List of Controversial Presidential Burials
By Staff Reporter

The burial of Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has become the latest in a growing list of African presidential funerals marred by controversy and emotional divisions between the state and the family.

As the nation observes a seven-day period of national mourning, uncertainty continues to cloud the final arrangements for the late president’s burial. The impasse stems from disagreements between government authorities and members of Lungu’s family and close associates, with each side standing firm on how the burial should proceed.

Former presidential spokesperson and political analyst Dickson Jere has called for calm and compromise, warning against Zambia joining a league of Southern African nations where similar disputes have occurred.

“Angola, Zimbabwe, and even Ghana provide cautionary tales,” Jere said. “In Angola, it took over a month to resolve the burial site of late President Eduardo Dos Santos after family members insisted on a private burial in Spain, where he died. The Angolan government, however, maintained that he deserved a state burial in Luanda.”

Similarly, in Zimbabwe, the death of former President Robert Mugabe in 2019 led to a standoff between his family and the government. Despite plans for a state burial at Heroes Acre in Harare—where national heroes, including Mugabe’s first wife Sally, are interred—his widow Grace Mugabe insisted he be buried in his home village in Zvimba. The government eventually conceded.

Zambia is no stranger to such tensions. In June 2021, a dispute arose during the funeral of founding father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. Some family members wanted him buried next to his wife, Betty Kaunda, in line with what they claimed were his final wishes. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and Kaunda was buried at the official Presidential Burial Site in Lusaka.

Other African nations have also struggled with similar issues. Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, was buried three times—first in Guinea, then in his home village after a state funeral in Accra, and later reburied again in the capital. To this day, some of his relatives still campaign for his remains to be returned to his village.

With President Lungu’s burial arrangements still pending, many Zambians are calling for unity and dignity in the process. Emotions remain high, with factions within the late president’s inner circle accused of exploiting the situation for political leverage, while the government insists it is merely fulfilling its constitutional obligations.

“There is no need to point fingers,” Jere emphasized. “This is a time for national healing, not division. With mature leadership and compromise, I am optimistic that a resolution will be reached before the mourning period ends.”

As the clock ticks down, the nation awaits clarity and closure on how and where their former leader will be laid to rest.

ECL Funeral Update: Cornelius Mweetwa reaches out

ECL Funeral Update: Cornelius Mweetwa reaches out

ZNBC -11.06.25

MOMBASA – The Zambian government has called for calm, unity and compassion as the nation continues to mourn the passing of its sixth President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died on Wednesday, 5 June 2025, in Pretoria, South Africa, following an illness. He was 68.

In a statement delivered via video link from Mombasa, Kenya, where he is attending a regional meeting, Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa emphasized that the government remains committed to ensuring President Lungu receives a dignified and honourable state funeral.

“President Hakainde Hichilema is resolute and unequivocal in his instruction that we accord our late former President a befitting farewell,” Mweetwa said on national broadcaster ZNBC. “We understand this is not just a political loss, but a deeply personal tragedy for the Lungu family.

Madam Esther Lungu, the children and grandchildren are grieving far beyond the reach of politics, and we must surround them with love and compassion.”

Mweetwa confirmed that Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe and Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa have been dispatched to South Africa to work closely with the family and close associates of the late President to chart an amicable way forward for funeral arrangements.

President Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth President from January 25, 2015, to August 24, 2021, rising to power after the death of President Michael Sata.

Before ascending to the presidency, he held several critical portfolios including Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Justice. He also served briefly as Secretary General of the Patriotic Front (PF).

Born on 11 November 1956 in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, Lungu studied law at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and went on to build a political career marked by humility, discipline, and devotion to Christian values.

His presidency was characterized by major infrastructure developments, including roads, bridges, airports, and silos.
He is credited with pushing the constitutional amendment that reintroduced the 50%+1 electoral threshold, ensuring stronger democratic legitimacy.

“President Lungu’s legacy includes efforts to unite Zambia’s 73 tribes and to invest in food security and development. These contributions will not be forgotten,” said Mweetwa. “Now is not the time to politicize grief.”

The spokesman also addressed recent criticism over who should have formally announced the President’s death, noting that in past instances—including the passing of President Kenneth Kaunda—the announcement was made by the Secretary to Cabinet, not the sitting President. “Let us not allow pain to divide us,” he said. “We are one Zambia, one nation.”

Calls for unity have also come from opposition leaders, including Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) president Kelvin Bwalya, who appealed for a peaceful resolution and a national send-off that honours the late President while respecting the wishes of the family.

As the mourning period continues, the government has urged all citizens to rally behind the first family and uphold national unity.

“This storm will pass,” Mweetwa said. “What must remain is our humanity and our Zambian spirit of togetherness.”

KBF PLEDGES TO UPHOLD OPPOSITION UNITY IN HONOR OF ECL

KBF PLEDGES TO UPHOLD OPPOSITION UNITY IN HONOR OF ECL

By Victoria Kayeye Yambani

Zambia Must Prosper President Kelvin Bwalya Fube says his party will do everything possible to keep the opposition united, honoring the wish of the late President Edgar Lungu.

Speaking during a visit to the Patriotic Front Secretariat in Lusaka to sign the book of condolence, Mr. Fube expressed his commitment to working with all political parties within the Tonse Alliance.

He has also donated various food items to support mourners who continue to gather at the Secretariat.

Meanwhile, PF Acting President Given Lubinda has directed party members to observe mourning only at the party secretariat, stating that this would be a fitting way to honour President Lungu’s legacy.

“No Money for Maize, But Funds for Parliament? Zambians Question Government Priorities”

“No Money for Maize, But Funds for Parliament? Zambians Question Government Priorities”

Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo Phiri has confirmed that the Zambian government does not have the financial resources to purchase more maize beyond the 543,000 metric tonnes currently budgeted for through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA). Speaking to the press, Mtolo stated that any additional purchases would require variations to the national budget a process that is both politically sensitive and time-consuming.

This statement comes at a time when mealie meal prices have soared to over K450 per 25kg bag in some areas, straining already vulnerable household incomes. Zambia, a country whose staple food is maize, is facing a potential food crisis as a result of poor harvests linked to erratic rainfall patterns, climate change, and limited government support to smallholder farmers.

The revelation that there are no funds to procure more maize has sparked widespread outrage, particularly as the government is simultaneously pursuing constitutional amendments and the expansion of Parliament, initiatives that are expected to consume significant public funds. Citizens and stakeholders are questioning whether these are the right priorities in such economically precarious times.

The government argues that expanding Parliament is necessary to reflect population growth revealed in the 2022 Census and to enhance political representation. Similarly, constitutional changes are being packaged as governance improvements. However, critics argue that these are politically driven moves meant to consolidate power ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The paradox is clear: while the government lacks funds to secure food for the nation or employ thousands of trained but jobless health workers, it has committed resources to institutional and political reforms with uncertain immediate benefits. Many observers see this as a misalignment of national priorities.

Public health institutions are similarly underfunded. More than 10,000 trained nurses, doctors, and other health personnel remain unemployed, despite glaring shortages in hospitals and clinics. Patients queue for hours, essential medicines are often out of stock, and mortality rates from preventable diseases are rising.

Government officials often defend the lack of investment in healthcare and agriculture with one common phrase: “There is no money.” However, the same excuse does not seem to apply when it comes to political projects. For many, this inconsistency highlights the selective application of fiscal constraints.

Civil society organizations and independent analysts have reacted sharply. The GEARS Initiative Zambia and others have urged the government to immediately halt the constitutional review and parliamentary expansion, arguing that such reforms should be deferred until Zambia achieves economic stability and food security.

Opposition leaders have seized on the issue as evidence of failed leadership. Socialist Party President Fred M’membe said, “You cannot amend the Constitution while your people starve. Prioritize life before law.” Similar sentiments have been echoed by other parties, warning that the ruling UPND risks losing public trust.

Public discontent is growing. Social media platforms are awash with criticism. Zambians are expressing anger using phrases like, “You can’t eat amendments,” “No maize, no medicine, but more MPs?” and “Starving in silence while Parliament expands.” These sentiments reflect a growing frustration with the government’s detachment from everyday realities.

At the core of this issue is the national budget itself, which many argue is tilted more toward political expenditure than human development. Key sectors such as education, health, and agriculture are underfunded in real terms, while the cost of governance salaries, allowances, and legislative activities continues to rise.

Experts from institutions like the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR) have proposed a re-prioritization of government spending. They suggest reallocating funds from political and administrative areas toward critical sectors that directly impact livelihoods, especially food production and healthcare delivery.

The Minister’s remarks about the maize ceiling reveal more than just budgetary limitations; they expose a deeper governance problem one of political optics taking precedence over pressing social needs. When a government cannot feed its people or treat its sick, its legitimacy is gradually eroded.

With the 2026 general elections approaching, how the government navigates these competing demands will be crucial. If it continues to prioritize political restructuring over food security and basic services, it risks fueling disillusionment, social unrest, and electoral backlash.

In the end, governance is not judged by legal reforms or the number of MPs, but by the quality of life for citizens. A hungry nation does not need more parliamentary seatsit needs maize, jobs, health services, and hope. The real question Zambians are asking is simple: Can we eat your priorities?
