Facts and Fiction; About the history of Lusaka

Facts and Fiction; About the history of Lusaka

By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

Some places we know differently now had other names. Lusaka’s Kamwala Secondary School used to be Prince Philip. David Kaunda Secondary Technical School was Hodson Technical College, Kabulonga Boys and Kabulonga Girls were Jean Rene and Gilbert Rene respectively. Chawama Compund used to be called Roberts, after a local European settler. An Italian called Marapodi used to run a brick kiln opposite the Independence Stadium. That is how that compound was named after him. Mandebvu is connected to Zimbabwean immigrants who lived there and kept beards (mandebvu) due to their religious practices. The spelling shows the Zimbabwe connections.

Burma Rd used to be called Market Rd and it was renamed in honour of local soldiers who fought on behalf of the british colonialists in Burma (now Myanmar). George Compound was a gift from George Hadjipetrou, an Englishman who actually died in 1995 aged 84 while his wife Yolanda died in August 2010 at the age of 93. Their daughter, Marianthy used to (or still does) run Andrew’s Motel.

So there was a large farm which made up what is now southern Lusaka, owned by a farmer John Laing, hence the compound by the same name. He lived there with his wife and family. He had general workers who lived on different parts of the farm, but his domestic workers lived in what is now known as “Kuku” compound or “Kwa Kuku”. (Not sure if the cook used to come from there). Along came a young man, John Howard, who married Mr Laing’s daughter. John Laing gave John Howard a part of his farm to manage, now known by his name as well. When Mr Laing died, in typical African tradition, his wife moved out of the house to live at a new site. The old home stead is now known as “Chibolya” compound, meaning abandoned place in Nyanja (we call such a place “Matongo” in Tonga). The new place where Mrs Laing moved to became known as “Kwa Mrs” or “Misisi” compound as we now know it. Before her death, the Mrs decided to give her faithful workers some of the land, this area is now known as “Chawama”, to acknowledge the good deed done.

Lusaka comes from the Soli headman Lusaaka the same way Kabulonga comes from Kabulongo village, a Soli village named after the reddish soil in the area. It was located around the place where Kabulonga Round About is today.

Meanwhile, Kabwata Clinic is built on the location of the original Katungu Bar.

Then there is the history which is now gone:

The first Disco in Lusaka was called Dust Bin and was at The Turf Club in Lusaka’s show grounds. The DJ was a Zimbabwean called Joe Pike.

PVC Disco was owned by a Lusaka businessman who also owned the first double decker buses in Lusaka if not Zambia, James Banda (no possible relation to Rupiah Banda?) Bob Samakai, Steven Ngoma and Eddie Manda were some of the crew members of the then popular mobile disco.

Malawian Eddie Manda well known as the ‘ Master Jam’ became the house DJ at Studio 22 owned by the Hickey Brothers Tony and Errol in Findeco House. Lusaka’s Studio 22 was somehow divided. From the lifts you walk in straight on the dance floor face to face with the DJ’s deck. On the right (Europe) you see a different class of revellers. Turning to the left (Africa) you notice a different crowd. It was never a racist division but disco lovers (Africa side) refered to it that way. One was free to go anywhere one wanted. Most black Zambians felt more comfortable on the Africa side. When the 6pm curfew was imposed because of the rebel soldiers were sneaking into Zambia hunting for Zimbabwean freedom fighters, entrance to most disco houses was 6pm. At Lusaka’s Studio 22 and the Q-Stiques in Emmasdale revellers used to go in for the whole night (6 to 6). Studio 22 used to serve coffee or tea free on request. You could doze off on a chair without interference from the bouncers.

Mr Rooster in ZIMCO building ground floor owned by the Hickey brothers became a dealers meeting joint. Next to Mr Rooster was Mwaiseni stores which used to be known as Checkers Retail Store and was the only store in Lusaka with escalators.
At the corner of Katondo street and Freedom way was The Lagondola bar and night spot owned by former Bank of Zambia boss Mr Jere became a popular spot because of the teentime shows by The Cross Bones. (The spot now has an unfinished building). Mr Jere also owned another night spot in Makeni called Kilimanjaro Pleasure Resort. Mike Nyoni, Chris Chali and other Lusaka bands were regular performers at both night spots.

Directly across Freedom way from Lagondola was Stanley Bar. Just outside Stanley bar was the main station for transport to Kanyama compound.

Top floor of the Society House was Hanif Adams’ “Room at the Top night club” ( High Lites) which mysteriously caught on fire one early morning. After High Lites Night Club was burnt down, Hanif Adams, his staff and new Disco gear moved temporarily to the American Dome by the edge of the Lusaka Show grounds.

Indians in Lusaka came from Fort Jameson. Indian settlers in Fort Jameson were predominantly Muslim. They originated from
Gujarat and entered Chipata through East Africa at the behest of the BSAC.

Wagon Wheels was a popular bar and restaurant situated by the Lusaka International Airport turn-off later to be known as Patelo’s Chicken (I think).

Lusaka always had lots of bars and discos and night spots. Some these were:
The Il Bambino in Lusaka Hotel, Mens only Q inn and the Dog Box, Grand Bar, Corner Bar, The Fountain, Ansac Arms, Red Lion, Forum, Africa Bar, City Centre Restaurant, Kwacha Hotel Bar, Mont Matre Bar, Rockwood night Club in Lusaka west (which was owned by the Chelemu Brothers after they bought the farm house from the Vlahakis family), Rocky Gardens (which was popular for lovers), Ba George at Andrews Motel, Pick & Whistle and The Q Sticks. In Kamwala was Hoola Hoop Bar. Lusaka Hotel had a men’s only bar called The Dog Box. Entrance was through Cairo Road. Au Mont Blanc was a cafe next to the Lusaka Post Office. Of course we need to add the likes of Mumana, New Londe, Nkuzyeni, Masiye, etc. There was Woodpecker Inn (present location of Woodlands Mall), Fridays Corner, City club and many others. We cant talk of discos without mentioning Mooncity and Valentino’s. There was Lotus Inn Bar next to lottie House owned by the Late Fundafunda who also had ama tarven kwa George and Green Villa Nite Club in Lusaka West which featured Shalawambe before their eventual retirement placein the 90s…To name all the bars will be hard. Matero alone you have Africa 2000, Nsimbi Yanga, Kariba Bar etc Geoge Compund has the likes of Namwela Zanga (chibuku bar once owned by my best friend) etc. From 70s to date is long time but you can add yours me I end here.

Then there is the interesting history:

Carlton Cafe was in the Central Arcade and had a private ‘Whites only’ bar called the ‘Grill Room’. It became the Forum (Boxers Mess) when the late Lusaka lawyer Mr Folotiya took over the premises. Nearby was Carlton Bar which was popular with South Africans. In the alley behind the bar was a brothel.

Talking of brothels, in the 70’s/80;s Lusaka sex workers used to parade along The Great East Road right opposite the Lusaka show grounds before moving on to Addis Ababa. Stanley bar was popular with Zairean sex workers( Bandumba) in the evening till late. The sex workers used to line up outside for clients to take their pick.

Zambia’s late Zam-Rock icon Paul Ngozi owned a take away food shop in Kabwata called “Chibe Pakapaka” He lived in Chinika compound before moving to Libala stage 2 till his death. He owned a sleek blue Skyline car. His band was called the Scorpions and they jammed in Makeni at a bar called the Pelican.

Now for a fable or urban legend:

The ghost of Rosemary, a Lusaka waitress who was said to have died misteriously appeared in three different bars she had worked in. First appearance was at Tambalala bar owned by a Mr Kasanda along Kabwe road not far from Chingwere cemetery where she was supposed to have been buried. Second appearance was at the Independence bar in Emmarsdale owned by The Findlays. Third appearance was at Evening Bar in Matero owned by Saigar Daka where she was said to have kissed a man who lost all his teeth and lived to tell the story.

Add what you know of Lusaka and its history.

ZAF TO BUILD HOUSE FOR 95 YEAR OLD CHIKANKANTA GRANDMA AFTER HER INITIAL HOUSE HAD ROOF BLOWN OFF BY ZAF CHOPPER

ZAF TO BUILD HOUSE FOR 95 YEAR OLD CHIKANKANTA GRANDMA AFTER HER INITIAL HOUSE HAD ROOF BLOWN OFF BY ZAF CHOPPER

THE Zambia Air Force (ZAF) has committed to building a three-roomed house for a 95-year old grandmother who resides deep in the the rolling hills and woodlands of Chikankata District in Southern Province.

The gesture is to compensate Esnart Haachintu Moonga for the partial destruction of her one-roomed house whose roofing sheets were blown off her humble structure and sent flying by a landing ZAF chopper on routine operation in Hamikoobo Village of Chief Naluwamba’s area.

While the incident caused pandemonium in the village sending panicky residents running for dear life, the old lady slept in the house thinking someone had come to attack her.

Joyce Mukuna, the victims only surviving daughter who has now taken her into her own hut said the incident was terrifying.

Joyce said although she was frightened initially, she now regards the incident as a  blessing in disguise.

In response to the incident, the Zambia Air Force has already gone on the ground and say they will work round the clock to build granny Esnart a new house within 14 days.

This afternoon, ZAF commander Lt General Oscar Nyoni dispatched ZAF Chief of Medical services, Brigadier General Simon Tembo to access the victim.

Brigadier General Tembo conducted a thorough medical check up of the old woman, after which he declared her uninjured and stable.

Accompanied by ZAF director public relations and foreign liason Colonel Mutale Kasoma, Brigadier Tembo handed over a bag of rice,  a bag of beans and chickens along with a sum of the K5,000 to the victim as a donation from the Force.

Upon learning that the old woman hardly walks, Brigadier Tembo said ZAF would also provide her a wheelchair.

After the visit, Col Mutale told journalists that Lt General Nyoni “was deeply saddened by the incident” pledging to do everything possible to alleviate the situation.

“I am pleased to announce that the foundation has already been started for a new house and will be completed in two weeks,” Col Kasoma announced.

“As you may be aware, the Zambia Air Force is involved in relief operations from time to time. So it’s quite unfortunate that this time around, we are here to offer support to someone who is inadvertently in a situation that was caused by our machine on a routine operation. But we are here and we will ensure that she gets everything she needs,” said Col Kasoma.

In the meantime, as Brigadier General Tembo and his men were attending to the woman, the sight of their waiting chopper had turned into an open air photo studio with men of the village bringing their wives, children, girlfriends, fiancees and baby mamas for a rare photo opportunity near a military air craft.

Barack Obama’s brother Malik announces he’s voting for Donald Trump

0

Abon’go Malik Obama, the estranged Kenyan-American half-brother of former U.S. president Barack Obama, took to X on Wednesday to announce he’ll be voting for Donald Trump. As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Barack and Malik were initially on good terms, but their relationship became strained at a certain point.

It now appears the pair are far from reconciling as Malik, who is a businessman and politician, publicly endorsed Trump for president on Wednesday. “I am Malik Obama. I’m a registered Republican and I’m voting for President Donald Trump,” the 66-year-old posted.

Per Vox, Malik has been a registered voter in Maryland since 2016. Malik has been openly critical of his 63-year-old half-brother Barack as well as Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party. Prior to announcing he was going to vote for Trump, Malik had taken to X the day before to take another shot at his half-brother.

“Fake A** when we were brothers” he captioned alongside a throwback photo of him and Barack. Before their relationship went south, Malik avidly supported his half-brother. He even told The Associated Press in 2004 that Barack was the best man at his wedding and “I was best man at his”, Newsweek reported.

But he later started being openly critical of his half-brother. In 2020, Malik criticized his sibling for not supporting the extended Obama family back home in the village of Kogelo, Kenya. Malik called the former U.S. president “cold and ruthless” while urging Americans to reelect President Donald Trump in November instead of his brother’s former vice president, Joe Biden.

Malik was speaking to the New York Post back home in Kenya following the release of his book, Big Bad Brother From Kenya. “He got rich and became a snob,” Malik said of Barack. “What I saw was he was the kind of person that wants people to worship him. He needs to be worshiped and I don’t do that. I am his older brother so I don’t do that.”

Malik and Barack share the same father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., a Kenyan economist who passed away in a car accident in 1982. Three years after his death, Malik met his half-brother Barack for the first time. Barack was then a 24-year-old Chicago community organizer and the two had a close relationship for decades before they fell out with each other.

Their strained relationship first began when Barack became president and issues arose as to which of his Kenyan relatives would be invited to his inauguration. Then things got worse after Malik told Barack of plans to set up a foundation named after their father – the Barack H. Obama Foundation.

Barack, who had then just been elected to the White House, was against the idea, fearing that the Barack H. Obama Foundation would be confused with him.

“We had a big fight on the phone because he was not in support and insisted I shut down the website and not continue with the foundation. He had his reasons but I was not having any of it,” Malik writes in his self-published memoir which he spent 22 years writing, according to the Post.

“We talked late into the night that night. He threatened to ‘cut me off’ if I continued with the idea.”

Malik went ahead with the foundation, which got into trouble with the law in 2011 when it claimed to be a tax-exempt nonprofit while it had not registered as such.

Then in 2014, Malik claimed that he asked his brother for help in burying their aunt Zeituni Onyango. “We needed to pay for the bills and the cost of her transportation back to Kenya,” Malik writes in his 435-page book. “[Barack] asked me how much and I told him roughly $20,000. This was too much he said.”

Barack eventually gave the family $5,000. “She really had been good to him,” Malik writes. “I don’t understand how somebody who claimed to be a relative or a brother can behave the way that he’s behaving, be so cold and ruthless, and just turn his back on the people he said were his family.”

Malik has in the past also expressed his displeasure with Barack’s “very business-like” and “very formal” reception toward him when he visited the White House in August 2015. Then in 2016, Malik made headlines after saying he was supporting Trump over Hillary Clinton.

Malik’s decision to support Trump ignited online conversations about the meeting points, if any, between politics and ideology and the good old tradition of standing up for your family.

Many were quick to note that while Malik reserved the right to support any political party or lean toward any ideological movement, his actions, which seemed to be aimed at slighting his brother, appeared to be motivated by jealousy and spite.

Malik’s stance has since not changed.

Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ Certified Triple Platinum In The UK

0

Bob Marley & The Wailers’ classic Three Little Birds is the first song by the Reggae group to reach triple platinum status in the United Kingdom (UK).

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), Three Little Birds was issued a BRIT Certified Platinum 3X award on Friday (September 6), after it surpassed over 1.8 million units in the UK, as measured by The Official Charts Company.

It had been certified double Platinum in December 2021, and Platinum in August 2018, and recently became Marley’s first song to surpass one billion plays on Spotify.

First released on June 3, 1977, on the landmark Exodus album, the song had reached No. 17 on the UK Singles Chart. Three Little Birds is said to have been inspired by the birds that fluttered by the window at Bob’s home at 56 Hope Road, Kingston before his exodus sent him to the UK in 1976.

It later appeared on the Diamond-selling greatest hits compilation album, Legend, in 1984.

In 2020, to celebrate Marley’s 75th birthday, a new animated music video for Three Little Birds was released. Marley’s daughter Cedella, at the time, said, “This song has helped provide hope and light for so many over the years, including me, and I hope it does the same for people now, especially with all that is going on in the world.” The new visuals, which depict a pig and a wolf developing a friendship under the watchful eye of the titular three little birds, have racked up over 125 million views on YouTube.

In 2014, the song’s beat was sampled in MAGIC!’s UK and US No. 1 hit Rude.

The track has also been featured on the soundtracks of several films, including the Bob Marley: One Love biopic (2024), Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), Brightburn (2019), Romona and Beezus (2010), Funny People (2009), and I Am Legend (2007).

Three Little Birds is one of seven songs by the Reggae band that reached platinum status in the UK.

Is This Love (1978) and Could You Be Loved (1980) are currently certified double platinum, each reaching a milestone exceeding 1.2 million units. Four other tracks have reached Platinum in the country, each surpassing 600,000 units: No Woman, No Cry (1974), Jamming (1977), One Love (1977), and Buffalo Solider (1983).

Stir It Up, Waiting In Vain, and Redemption Song have achieved Gold status (400,000 units), while Get Up, Stand Up, I Shot The Sheriff, and Satisfy My Soul are certified Silver (200,000 units).

‘Hell behind bars’ – Life in DR Congo’s most notorious jail

In attempting to describe Makala Prison – the scene of a deadly and failed breakout this week in the Democratic Republic of Congo – two people who have been inside used the exact same word: “hell”.

“Makala is a true hell,” Stanis Bujakera, a former inmate and journalist, told the BBC about DR Congo’s largest jail.

Bujakera was sent to the notorious Makala Prison in September last year, after the authorities accused him of writing an article that alleged the military were involved in an opposition politician’s death. He spent six months there.
“Makala is not a prison, but a detention centre resembling a concentration camp, where people are sent to die,” he said.

The prison, located in capital city Kinshasa, has a capacity of 1,500 prisoners but is estimated to hold around 10 times more.

This cramped population ranges from petty criminals to political prisoners to murderers.

Human rights groups have long complained of the dire conditions Makala inmates face, including overcrowding, unsubstantial food and poor access to clean water.
Following a disaster at the facility earlier this week, these conditions have been thrust into the spotlight once again.

After masses of inmates tried to break out of Makala in the early hours of Monday morning, 129 prisoners lost their lives, Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani said.

Two dozen were shot dead as they tried to escape, Mr Shabani reported, but most were suffocated in a crush.

Four surviving inmates told the New York Times that prior to the escape attempt, prisoners had been held in stifling cells without running water or the electricity to power fans for more than a day-and-a-half.

Some prisoners had initially broken out to escape the heat, they said.

Bujakera said these conditions were far from unusual – taps “constantly” run dry at Makala, while “electricity is random, leaving the detainees without light for days on end”.

“Inmates are literally abandoned to their fate, exposed to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions that foster contamination and the spread of disease,” he added.

Prisoners die “every day” as a result, Bujakera said.

Rostin Manketa, executive director of Congolese human rights group La Voix des Sans Voix, shares a similar account.

He has visited Makala several times and concluded that when a person has been sent to Makala Prison, “it seems like [they] have been sent to hell”.

Stark videos filmed by Bujakera during his time in Makala show dozens of sleeping men, packed tightly together on the floor of an overflowing room.

Their limbs overlap, and in a delicate balancing act some men sleep atop the walls that divide shower stalls.

Conditions are better in Makala’s VIP section, a separate pavilion that only the minority can afford. You get a bed and more space, for example.

Bujakera was asked to pay $3,000 (£2,280) to stay in VIP, but he managed to get this price slashed to $450 (£340) for his stay.

He told the BBC: “Economic inequalities between inmates create a hierarchy… the poorest are abandoned to their fate.”

What is more, wardens at Makala have little presence. Law and order inside the prison is effectively delegated to the inmates themselves.

“Prisoners govern themselves,” Fred Bauma, a human rights activist who was incarcerated in Makala from March 2015 to August 2016, told BBC’s Focus on Africa podcast this week.

“It’s like you’ve changed countries and there’s a new government and you need to learn those rules.”

This system of self-government is dysfunctional and leads to “harmful power dynamics, acts of violence and conflicts between inmates”, Bujakera said.

But Makala is not alone with its abysmal conditions – prisons all over the country are chronically underfunded and overcrowded.

According to the World Prison Brief project, DR Congo’s jails are the sixth-most overcrowded globally.

The authorities have acknowledged this problem on a number of occasions. Following Monday’s jailbreak, Deputy Justice Minister Samuel Mbemba blamed magistrates for prison overcrowding, noting that “even mere suspects are sent to prison”.

Many inmates have not actually been sentenced for a crime but are instead held in jail for months – or years – while waiting to be tried.

The food in DR Congo’s prisons has also been criticised widely.

In Makala, inmates get only one meal per day – and this dish is often of limited nutritional value.

Pictures taken by Bujakera show a tub of maize meal – a staple carbohydrate in DR Congo – turned hard and dry, accompanied by a watery brown vegetable stew.

In order to avoid malnourishment, many prisoners rely on their relatives to bring food in to them.

However, not everyone has these connections.

In 2017, a charity reported that at least 17 prisoners starved to death following food shortages in Makala.

It is “possible” that Makala’s testing environment led to the tragic attempt to escape, Mr Manketa said.

He argues that to avoid a repeat, the authorities should build new prisons and improve existing ones.

Bujakera, who is now based in the United States, said this change must happen swiftly.

It is a “sick” justice system, he lamented, and as Monday’s disaster demonstrated, people are dying while waiting for a cure.

Sudan rejects UN call for peace force to protect civilians

0

Sudan’s military-led government has rejected a call by a UN fact-finding mission for the deployment of an international force to protect civilians from the country’s ongoing civil war.

Sudan’s warring parties had committed “harrowing” human rights violations against civilians, the UN mission reported.

Thousands of people have been killed and nearly eight million displaced since conflict broke out in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The two had jointly staged a coup, but then fell-out, plunging Sudan into a civil war.

“Given the failure of the warring parties to spare civilians, it is imperative that an independent and impartial force with a mandate to safeguard civilians be deployed without delay,” the UN mission’s lead, Chande Othman, said.

The fact-finding mission also called for an arms embargo to be imposed on both sides involved in the conflict.

It reported its findings after obtaining first-hand testimony from 182 survivors, family members and eyewitnesses.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is accused of supporting the RSF with money and guns – which it denies – while Saudi Arabia is said to have close ties with the Sudanese government.

Sudan’s foreign ministry said the government rejected the recommendations of the fact-finding mission in their “entirety”.

It described the UN Human Rights Council as “a political and illegal body”, and said the mission’s recommendations were “a flagrant violation of their mandate”.
The RSF has not yet commented on the proposal.

Meanwhile, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) called on the “world to wake up and help Sudan out of the nightmare it is living through”, AFP news agency reported.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was speaking during a visit to Port Sudan – the main hub for aid agencies and new headquarters of the government, after it was driven out of the capital, Khartoum, by the RSF.

“The scale of the emergency is shocking, as is the insufficient action being taken to curtail the conflict and respond to the suffering it is causing,” Dr Tedros was quoted as saying.

In August, a UN-backed committee of experts declared a famine at a camp housing about 500,000 displaced people near the besieged city of el-Fasher in Darfur, one of the regions worst-affected by the conflict.

Various mediation efforts, brokered by Saudi Arabia and the US, have failed to end the conflict.

Fivio Foreign has an idea about why so many women hate on Ice Spice

0

Fivio Foreign has an idea about why so many women hate on Ice Spice.

The New York rapper took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (September 4) and explained why he thinks other women dislike his fellow New York star.

It’s because, he said, of the attention she gets from men. “Bitches hate Spice cuz n-ggas love spice,” he wrote. In a follow-up tweet, Fivio clarified that he wasn’t necessarily speaking about his own feelings: “I’m not n-ggas either.. ijs.”

He concluded with: “My bad lol.”

Some of that hate from other women occurred earlier this week Azealia Banksentered the conversation surrounding the beef between Ice Spice and her now-former friend Cleotrapa.

As previously reported, Cleo made a five-part TikTok earlier this week alleging that the “Munch” hitmaker had mistreated her on her Y2K! Tour.

After Ice’s manager spoke out in a series of since-deleted tweets that blamed Cleo and her team, Banks took to X as well to side with the up-and-coming rapper.

“I don’t like how everyone is trying to make cleotrapa look,” she began. “Any fucking who @iamcleotrapa will be performing with me on Halloween Oct 31. at @Terminal5NYC. She will – be paid, have her own space to glam, whatever she wants on her rider.. because i have fucking respect & class.”

She continued: “She can have 50 different styles of chicken salads. It’s whatever she desires.”

In July, the “Deli” rapper shed some light on how she gets along with her “Barbie World” collaborator Nicki Minaj, and the news was…mixed.

The Bronx rapper spilled the beans in a conversation with Rolling Stone.

“We don’t have the closest relationship, you know? But we’re definitely good,” she told RS. “We’re mutuals. We had smash records together. I love us together. I think the world does too.”

Back in February, Ice found herself embroiled in a beef with another rapper, when Latto dissed her on her single “Sunday Service.”

The Bronx rap star first took aim at the “Put In Da Floor” hitmaker on her song “Think U the Shit (Fart)” where she rapped: “I got my foot on they necks, I can’t let up/ She all on the floor, told her get up.”

AD
AD LOADING…
Latto has responded to Spice, spitting on her hard-hitting track: “Think I’m the shit, bitch, I know it, ho/ Jesus walked on water, I got ice boilin’ though.”

The song includes other less obvious stabs at her contemporary including: “These bitches corny, soon as monkey see, then you know monkey do/ Do you rap or do you tweet?/ ‘Cause I can’t tell, get in the booth, bitch” and “I just want a one on one, don’t know why she so nervous.”

Vybz Kartel Reveals How He Recorded Gold-Selling Hit ‘Fever’ In Prison

0

Two Apple devices, some headphones, a mattress, and pauses to check if correctional officers were close to his cell. That’s essentially how Vybz Kartel pulled off recording music behind bars for 12 years – but he tells the story better.

The provocative Dancehall deejay was constantly under the radar for having current lyrics while locked up from 2011 to July 2024, and previously alluded to a limitless library of unreleased material despite raids that revealed contraband in his cell.

Speaking on Juan EP is Life podcast on Wednesday, Kartel revealed that he started recording in prison a year into his lock-up.

“In the first year, yeah, we had songs unreleased, but then, you naah mean, the songs ran out and we had to do what we had to do, so that’s when I started recording behind bars…” the Any Weather deejay shared. “It wasn’t really that hard because, you know, technology made it easier. You know, I used to record on the iPhone 6, yeah, because it has an amazing – not the 6, the 5-plus or the 5-s, something like that – but it has an amazing sound quality. So Fever, all those songs, we recorded on that little iPhone.”

The 2016 hit recently surpassed 100 million plays on Spotify, adding to its accolades which include Gold certification in the United States (2020) and Silver certification in the United Kingdom (2023). Its recording process, however, wasn’t as glittery.

“I had to deejay directly into the iPhone…” he recalled. “They gave you a mattress, right, so I used the mattress to imitate the padding in the studio… I had the phone, like, three feet away from my face and I wrapped the mattress around my head and recorded. Yeah, it was crazy man, on my knees too… It was crazy.”

He added that he had headphones plugged into an iPad where he listened to the instrumental.

“It went into the iPhone as a cappella, and then we had to send it to the studio and the engineer.”

Fever was produced by Linton ‘TJ’ White, but Kartel revealed that Mario ‘Dunw3ll’ Dunwell and RedBoom Supamix were often the recipients of his raw recordings.

“Big up Dunw3ll and big up RedBoom… Dunw3ll would piece it together, but after I recorded, then I would make a demo. So, I would play the rhythm loud and then deejay, so like a demo, so they knew how to follow.”

And where were the correctional officers, you may ask?

“Most of the time we had to record, like, at night, but sometimes it had to be, like, at 12 p.m. when most of the officers would be, like, on lunch break… I would still have to be watching. So, I’d be like ‘fee-veeeerrrr’ and then I had to get up and look, naah mean, so it was crazy. It was line by line.”

He described it as a pressuring time, filled with cell searches and endless replacements of Apple devices.

“I didn’t say anything but when I started talking about current stuff, I mean, a lot of people were like, nah, he’s either Nostradamus that he could predict the future – Vybztradamus – or he’s actually recording. So, it was crazy… I couldn’t snitch on myself; we were in prison at the time.”

The Bail For Me artist was released through an overturned murder conviction on the eve of Emancipation Day.

His freedom has coincided with increased press about ridding contraband from Jamaica’s prison system, with Commissioner of Corrections Brigadier Radgh Mason stating his mission to weed out corrupt officers.

Drake Fans Label J Cole A Traitor Over ASAP Rocky Collab

Cole is all peace and love, and Drake fans are always ready for war.
The great rap beef of 2024 continues, as two MCs previously from opposing sides have now complicated the situation for Drake fans. Moreover, A$AP Rocky tapped J Cole for “Ruby Rosary,” a new Alchemist-produced single from his upcoming album Don’t Be Dumb. Thanks to the Harlem creative’s possible shots at the 6ix God, a lot of OVO Stans are not happy with the Dreamville boss clearing a collaboration with one of Drizzy’s many opponents this year. Earlier this year, just days after bowing out of the battle, Cole also appeared on Future and Metro Boomin’s WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU.

As such, a lot of people are looking at J. Cole sideways, wondering why he would work with these people and whether or not he feels differently about Drake now. After all, it was probably their “First Person Shooter” collaboration that set a lot of this beef in motion, at least on Kendrick Lamar’s end.

But the most likely scenario is that despite Rocky’s disses towards The Boy, Cole probably has the same love for everyone involved. He’s never been one to be overtly confrontational beyond being competitive, and we can’t imagine that he would let loyalties determine who he will make art with.

Sure, this doesn’t explain everything about these lyricists’ roles in all this, but we doubt that J. Cole is really “picking a side” here. Also, we have to consider that Drake recently reminisced on this friendship with Cole via his “100 GIGS” content drop, sharing a classic video of them buying Born Sinner CDs upon its release at a Best Buy. However, we don’t know if this nostalgia is for a broken friendship or just for simpler times, so maybe it doesn’t affirm their bond in the way we might assume. Regardless, check out more reactions to “Ruby Rosary” and this perceived betrayal down below.

Meanwhile, as Drake seeks a “Game 2,” perhaps he will more directly attack A$AP Rocky, J Cole, Future, and his other opps. We might even see him to at Kendrick Lamar again, but that’s still a mystery and an unlikely scenario until proven otherwise.

“No Face” suggests that the Toronto superstar will pick the former approach against his former colleagues. Maybe then Cole will fully commit to battling his other “Big Three” partner or walk away from another chance to play in the mud.

M’MEMBE DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM ANY CLAIMS OF ALLIANCE TALKS, BUT NAKACHINDA SAYS PF IS OPEN TO TALKS

M’MEMBE DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM ANY CLAIMS OF ALLIANCE TALKS, BUT NAKACHINDA SAYS PF IS OPEN TO TALKS

Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe has distanced himself and his party from possible alliance talks with any PF faction saying he has never met anyone from the former ruling party to discuss working together.

In a telephone call to KBN TV, Dr. M’membe was reacting to yesterday’s news story about the anticipated People’s Pact to be launched soon in which is party has been named to be among those proposing working together.

Dr. M’membe claims that the only invitation he got was from now incarcerated senior PF member, Nixon Chilangwa saying he has never responded to that message to date.

“I have never met ECL, I have never met Lubinda and I have never met Nakachinda or anyone from PF to discuss an alliance,” said Dr. M’membe.

Dr. M’membe’s position sharply differs with PF faction Secretary General, Raphael Nakachinda, who last week confirmed that his party was in talks with the Socialist Party.

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe has accused KBN TV of supporting the candidature of Harry Kalaba even though it’s a known fact that the UKA Chairperson is State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota.

“I’m a journalist myself, if you write about me to malign me, I will also use other media platforms to defend myself and I will also start writing about you that you are conflicted in this matter, it’s very clear that you support Harry Kalaba,” he said.

In response to the accusation, KBN TV CEO Pastor Kennedy Mambwe told Dr. M’membe that the media house supports the democratic ideals of Zambia and considers UKA as a good thing for our nation but doesn’t support any particular individual in the said alliance.

Later during a conference call between the KBN TV CEO and PF Secretary General Raphael, Dr. M’membe told Mr. Nakachinda that he had only visited him in police cells during which visit there was nothing talked about regarding an alliance.

And Mr. Nakachinda reiterated that the PF faction to which he belongs will soon issue a statement that they are open to discussions including talking to the Socialist Party.

Dr. M’membe requested KBN TV to clear the air and put the record straight that his party was not in any alliance talks with the former ruling party.

M’MEMBE QUESTIONS HH ON MASDAR 2000MW OF SOLAR ENERGY

M’MEMBE QUESTIONS HH ON MASDAR 2000MW OF SOLAR ENERGY

….says he is shocked that the Head of State has continued promising of more energy projects when previous ones have not come to fruition

Lusaka… Sunday, September 8, 2024

Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe has asked President Hakainde Hichilema to inform the nation on the progress made regarding the 2000 megawatts of solar energy from United Arab Emirates.

Dr. M’membe says he is shocked that the Head of State has come back from China promising more projects in the energy sector when the previous ones have not been done.

“Last year on the 17th of January, Mr Hichilema posted on his Facebook page that he had clinched a deal with United Arab Emirates state owned company called MASDAR for a US$2 billion investment in the renewable energy to generate solar power of 2000 megawatts. It’s approaching two years now, where is that 2000MW of energy? We had the maximum capacity of about 3000MW, if we had added 2000MW, we would be talking about 5000MW. It would have cushioned us in terms of load-shedding that our people are enduring today, some having electricity for a few minutes in 48 hours,” he said.

“Today our people have difficulties ironing what they have to wear, they have difficulties cooking, they have difficulties storing foods, the deep fridges are no longer working, they have to go to the shops everyday. Even the shops are finding it difficult storing things in the cold room. They have to run generators for close to 24hrs a day. It is a huge challenge and their leaders promised almost two years ago of bringing 2000MW of solar energy for MASDAR over a US$2 billion investment.”

He said this administration is good at making promises but they fail to deliver.

“But today, the same mouth is promising the same things from China. After being in China for a few days, they have clinched other solar energy projects. They are not even telling you what has happened to that MASDAR project of US$2 billion, they were boasting about it,” he added.

“Before Mr Hichilema won the elections in 2021, he had gone to America when he came back he said he had contracted or pledges about US$3 billion investment immediately he wins the elections. We have never seen that US$3 billion investment. Wherever they go, when they come back there are Memorandum of Understanding signed, there deals clinched of big amounts.”

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe said Zambians are burdened with a lot of taxes confirming the recent adjustments in mobile money transaction charges.

A tiny pinch of Salt in President HH Beijing trip- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

A tiny pinch of Salt in President HH Beijing trip

8th Sept 2024

Amb. Anthony Mukwita

I come from a background where when one has done something good, you commend them.
It´s on this back that I commend Don H or President Hichilema for having taken the long trek to China after so much procrastination, joining 53 other African heads of states for the annual FOCAC get together.

Before the trip, way back in 2022, many analysts on international politics and economics, including my humble self told Don H that ignoring China was like burying ones head in the sand, it just wasn’t politically and diplomatically astute.
Don H and his men did not listen and when China was openly rebuked and chastised by a US Senator in a twit, the President did nothing to defend the Dragon.

“I was honoured to meet with President Hichilema, a strong leader and bright spot for democracy in Africa. HH is working hard to “curb” China´s malign and predatory influence in Zambia, as well as increase cooperation with the US…” read the Senators unflattering twit.

The Don I think forgot that for almost 60 years, Zambia enjoyed stellar diplomatic and economic relations with China that saw the birth of the almost 2000km railway line between landlocked Zambia and Tanzania.

In my latest 2023 book “China in Africa the  Zambia story” inspired by a master’s degree thesis in International Relations, I observed that it wasn’t diplomatically good for Don H to ignore China for two years since he assumed office in August 2021 but made numerous trips to the United States and UK.

After all, of the about $14 billion foreign debt Zambia had then borrowed for infrastructure development, China was owed about $6 billion alone, so ignoring it was like biting the finger that feeds you.
I further pointed out on numerous TV interviews on Diamond and KBNTV the importance of Don H to balance his love between Uncle Sam and the dragon because favouring one, even by perception, could hurt the other.
And this came to pass as we saw China refusing to give Zambia a much needed hair cut on loans at the Creditors meeting, in my view, because they felt slighted by our President.

To add salt to the festering economic wound, I am told Zambia under Don H cancelled most contracts Chinese companies had with Zambia obtained under his predecessor H.E Edgar Lungu in 2021.

China wasn’t happy because these contracts were from its EXIM bank.
Now if you cancel my contracts and openly show that you prefer the West to the East, I have no choice as China but to give you a similar economic cold shoulder.

Respected analysts tell me that had Don H just given a little attention to China instead of a mere phone call to President Xi when he launched the $65 million Kenneth Kaunda wing gift at Mulungushi International Conference two years after assuming office, Zambia would be in a better place than the group hand-outs we got during the September 4 indaba in Beijing.

By the way the FOCAC meeting last week has been held since inception in 2000 but I notice some Don H consultants think it was held for the first time last week, sorry to burst your bubble.

President´s Edgar Lungu and predecessor Michael Sata attended this meeting annually, not ´for the first time´.
At the September 4 FOCAC, which in diplomacy parlance is also known as “Africa plus one” in reference to similar meetings African leaders hold annually with either the US, Russia, Japan, India and France, President Xi Jinping pledged to help Africa, not just Zambia with about $50 billion in development aid, loans and grants.

More, however, could have been obtained if we had a warmer relationship with China on a bi-lateral level than fall in the trap of embracing one block at the expense of another in 2021, even by mere perception.

Diplomacy dictates that we talk to everyone and do not inherit other nations enemies. What do we do when the enemies make up?

In my book “China in Africa the Zambia story” on page 7 I write that, “ everywhere you look in Zambia today, the footprint of China´s ubiquitous presence in Zambia is visible…the roads we drive on and airports we land and take off from are 100pc ´Made in China´.”

Our world is increasingly becoming multi-polar, its no longer about Uncle Sam sneezing and everyone catching a cold, we now have China, Russia or the BRICS rising, we must be friends with everyone, without exception.

Me myself personally, I am happy that Don H has finally had this epiphany of whom China is, as a global economic player like Malcom X said, “you only ignore a nation of more than $1 billion people at your own peril.”

This is a nation that has uplifted 300 million people out of abject poverty in under 30 years as at 2015, there´s a lot we can learn from them and even more if we embrace them as friends, just like we do with the US and its EU allies.

Imagine what we could have reaped if we did not freeze our friendship in 2021? Lessons learnt, bridges burnt to the ground.

China has built 100,000kms of highways and about 10,000 kms of railway lines in Africa since FOCAC started in 2000.

China has built more than 200 schools, 50 stadiums and 100 ports according the Boston University library.

Their corporation with Africa, by leaps and bounds surpass that of the Us and EU combined since independence, it is only a good thing to embrace them the same we embrace the west in a multi polar state of things.

I am also thinking, how is the uncle Sam perceiving Don H now after they advised him through that infamous twit to “curb” Chinese influence in Zambia?
That’s my two cents to Don H.

RAMPANT MISMANAGEMENT OF SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER BY THE UPND GOVT SADDENS SP

RAMPANT MISMANAGEMENT OF SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER BY THE UPND GOVT SADDENS SP

….says recent reports indicate that there are ghost beneficiaries under the scheme

Lusaka… Sunday September 8, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) General Secretary Dr. Cosmas Musumali has expressed concern that the real beneficiaries under the Social Cash Transfer scheme are not benefiting from the programme.

Dr. Musumali claim that there are ghost beneficiaries under the scheme accusing government officials of engaging in corrupt practices.

He said the vulnerable people who are supposed to benefit from the programme are not benefiting because some officials are pocketing the funds.

“Under the social cash transfer, the latest reports are that there are ghost beneficiaries. That the leaders in this government at provincial level under the ministry of community development are benefiting from this system with their allies. The real beneficiaries are being left out,” he said.

“We are dealing with a corrupt government. And we don’t see concrete action that deals squarely with corruption. This problem is countrywide and it’s not delt with and we believe they are tolerating it. This is painful because it deals with the most vulnerable people in communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Musumali has urged Laura Miti to speak for the people whose human rights have been severely abused by this government.

“I was reading something, an article from Laura Miti. And this article from Laura Miti, according to one of the commentators was below the belt. The article was about Fred M’membe and again the timing is aligned to these attacks on the Socialist Party. As the Socialist Party we believe in the freedom of of expression. In as much as we don’t believe in Laura Miti what she says, and we think that she is biased, but we would go to extrems to protect her freedom of expression. She is a Zambian and she has the right to say something,” he said.

“You have been given the responsibility that deals with human rights, we want to hear you categorically and explicitly talk about the human rights abuses that are increasing in the country. We don’t want to wait for reports from the Americans, the International Agencies for the abuses that are going on here in our country.”

He said as someone coming from an NGO, a lot of people expect Ms Miti to speak for the people and protect their rights.

“Your analysis is out of fabrication. And the danger of fabrication is that when you mention certain facts, but turn them around people may believe them. We will not sit and not take position and defend ourselves just like you have done for others,” said Dr Musumali.

“You have accused M’membe of going into politics to seek revenge, that is cheap. To revenge against who? At the begining you were saying he was there to revenge against ECL. Now that President Lungu is no longer there, you are now saying he is there to revenge against HH. What is there for comrade Fred M’membe to revenge against HH?”

‘I`M PATRIOTIC’ ….l HAVE NEVER ABANDONED THE FLAG – MUZALA

RUNNER Muzala Samukoga says he is a patriotic Zambian and that his decision to use his kit sponsor’s trademark during the Diamond League has been taken out of context.

Various social media platforms went ablaze suggesting that the Paris 2024 Games 400m bronze medalist had abandoned the Zambian flag during the recent Diamond League in Rome which he won with a time of 43.99 seconds.

Speaking live on his Facebook Page on Tuesday night,Samukoga said he had not abandoned the Zambian flag as people claimed.

“I have never abandoned the Zambian flag. I am a proud Zambian. I don’t know where the news that I abandoned the flag came from. The reason I put those Adidas symbols is because they are my sponsors. I hope this is clear. I have never and will never abandon the flag. Thank you so much yo those who understood and those who missed what that meant,” Samukoga said.

He explained that he represents Adidas in individual races such as the Diamond League, World Challenge, Golden Continental Tour, Silver Continental Tour, and Bronze Continental Tour.

In athletics, we have five championships, which include the Olympics , World Championships, African Games, Commonwealth Games and Senior African Championships, and in these competitions, you have to represent your country. That is a national duty. You have to put on that Zambian jersey with pride. The attire is written Zambia either in front or at the back,” he said.

Samukoga is also the reigning Commonwealth Games 400m champion and an African Silver medalist.

“When I go for national duty, I always do the right thing. I have a contract with Adidas. I don’t want to talk about my stuff. I have been working with Adidas for two years now.

“I always do what my sponsors ask me to do. When I go for the Diamond League, World Challenge, Golden Continental Tour, Silver Continental Tour and Bronze Continental Tour, these are individual races, I represent Adidas. I am from Zambia but competing in an individual event, he said.

He said it was said that people misinterpreted his post to have abandoned the Zambian flag.

“It’s sad people rush to conclusions without asking what the post meant. In those completions, I have a contract. It’s not a national duty. During introductions and on the official results, the flag is always there.

“Have you ever seen Patson Daka wear a Zambian jersey during Leicester City matches? At such competitions, I don the Adidas gear because I am contracted and get paid,” he explained.

1 COMMANDO UNIT DWAFS vs  OTHER SOLDIERS IN FITNESS COMPETITION

1 COMMANDO UNIT DWAFS vs  OTHER SOLDIERS IN FITNESS COMPETITION

Mercilessly, 1 Commando Unit has assaulted 16 rivals in the rocky and red soiled terrains of Mushili Barracks, leaving the closest rival, 48 Marine yearning for lake Mweru’s waters to excel, and probably catch up, at the Army Commander’s Fitness Competition.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Nr7o5NdetpCQiccQ/?mibextid=oFDknk

The four-day competition whose finale was on Friday was graced by Commander Zambia Army, Lt Gen Sitali Dennis Alibuzwi who witnessed 17 Units gauging their levels of fitness by engaging into a series of physical activities for four days.

On the first day, the troops were launched for a 3.2 Kilometre run, carrying different loads of multiple weight and also engaged into Push Ups, Sit Ups and Pull Ups.

On the second day, they covered another 3.2 kilometre run, carrying the same loads of multiple weight, coupled with obstacle crossing.

On the third day, the troops were engaged in a 30 metre abnormal tyre flipping, concluding with a 22.7 kilometre forced march while carrying sacks of sand weighing 20 kg on the fourth day.

And Lt Gen Alibuzwi has reminded the troops that a fit Army is a ready one, that is ever prepared to undertake all assigned missions and tasks and that nothing that compromises such activities should be entertained.

He stated that holding more of such competitions in various forms, including mountaineering, is among the activities topping Command’s agenda.

He said training and keeping fit should be the main pre-occupation that soldiers should embrace, adding that this can only happen in peace time and that such competitions should be taken seriously.

Despite the pain and hardships the competition came with, it was all smiles at the end as Warrant Officer Class Two Chipukuchi Reuben Kayimbo of Muchinga Formation was promoted to his next rank after impressing Command as the oldest participant.

“As a way of motivation, allow me fellow soldiers to make an announcement that the best platoon will be considered as priority when we start constituting the next ZAMBATT.
I am directing the BGGS to make sure that he takes note of this and he should not forget,” he instructed.

For the Umpires, obviously, salivating and hopping to tap into WOI Chipukuchi’s fortunes, theirs however, was a solid commendation from the Commander, for having ensured that an impartial and fair judgement was delivered during the competition.

3 Special Forces Group Commander, Brig Gen Charles Swana said the objective of the competition was achieved, as 1 Commando Unit Battalion Commander, Lt Col Fredrick Mwendabai Mulonda stated that the competition was conducted in a very transparent manner.

1 Commando Unit scored 1,048 marks followed by their water baked brothers, 48 Marine who scored 1,001 marks in second position, while 3 Infantry Battalion with 909 marks came out third in major Units category.

They were followed by 17 Cavalry Regiment in fourth position with 865 marks. It seems 1 Infantry Battalion were busy looking for the Crested Cranes in the shrubs of Kaloko and Kafubu East Dam, such that by the time they realised they were in a competition, they found themselves on fifth position with 826 marks.

Under Minor Unit category, Headquarters 1 Infantry Brigade came out first with 697 marks and were trailed by 3 Infantry Brigade Headquarters on 662 marks, while HQ Muchinga Command came third on 487 marks.

UPND’S VOTE BUYING SCHEMES IN ZIMBA DISTRICT UPSETS SOCIALIST PARTY

UPND’S VOTE BUYING SCHEMES IN ZIMBA DISTRICT UPSETS SOCIALIST PARTY

Zimba district… Saturday, September 7, 2024

The Socialist Party (SP) campaign team in Chidi Ward of Zimba District, Southern Province, has expressed worry with some government officials through the social social cash transfer programs, the department of the Farmers Input Support Programme (FISP) including the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity who are allegedly distributing relief food and other inducements in the area.

The opposition political party says this is tantamount to vote buying.

“From Thursday 05 to Friday 06 September 2024 government through it’s program on FISP were busy distributing bags of fertilizer in Simundivwi polling station including Sikalaye polling station to the voters. Friday 06 September 2024 Government through the Social Cash Transfer program were also busy with there programs at Simumdivwi Polling station and the targeted people they are meeting are people who are registered as voters in those areas,” said Kelvin Phiri, a Member of Central Committee.

“Same day Friday 06 September 2024 The UPND campaign team were in Chidi Polling station campaigning for there candidate and after the campaign they were busy through DMMU distributining Mealie meal to voters in the area. The same programs have been happening in areas where Socialist Party has orginised meetings as per ECZ time table.”

Mr Phiri further called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to quickly intervene into the matter and take action as such activities have potential to corrupt the mind of voters because programs are happening during a by-elections.

“As a Party, we are very much concerned that such programs have become very active and fast during this time of a by-election,” he added.

“ECZ have always stopped such activities and our call to the Commission is to quickly intervene in the matter and leave voters to vote freely and choose a candidate of their choice.”

He further called on the ECZ to stop this process until 19 September 2024 when the ward by-election is done.

“The Party is also concerned with the behavior of headman Simumdivwi who went to our camp and stopped the team from campaigning and went even further to destroy food which was been cooked by our team at camp,” he alleged.

“The behavior by the village leader simply shows the camp he belongs and the question is how can a traditional leader come to our camp and destroy food which our members who are also his people are eating.”

Mr Phiri emphasized that the Socialist Party has been peaceful and will countinue to be peaceful if the government derperments and ECZ stop the programs of making voters to vote for the rulling party.

He further said it is also worrying with the use of government vehicles during campaigns by the UPND which has countinued and the most worrying part is that civil servants are now been involved in politics.

“The party also want to thank the people of Chidi Ward for the great welcome and understanding the socialist party manifesto,” he stated.

50 Cent has admitted that he wishes he had a daughter after being moved to tears at Eminem‘s daughter Hailie Jade’s wedding

50 Cent has admitted that he wishes he had a daughter after being moved to tears at Eminem‘s daughter Hailie Jade’s wedding.

50 was a guest at 28-year-old Hailie’s wedding earlier this year and in a new interview with Haute Living, revealed the moment made him realize he wished he had a girl of his own.

“I wish I had a daughter. I do. I wish I had a daughter,” he said. “I wish I had that [father-daughter] relationship. For female children, their dad is the first man they fall in love with. Male children go to their mom; I’m a mama’s boy myself.”

50, who has two sons, then recalled his emotional reaction to watching Em’s daughter get married: “It was unbelievable, the wildest thing for me, period. I was like, ‘Yo, bro, this is crazy. We’re getting old. Your baby is grown. What the fuck is going on?’

“I was having a moment myself over there. I told Em, ‘You said it was OK to cry, because I’m crying.’ I couldn’t believe it went that fast.”

At Hailie Jade’s wedding this past May, Eminem was seen dancing with the bride while wearing a tuxedo and sunglasses.

Other guests at the wedding included Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.

While sharing photos of the special day on Instagram, Hailie wrote: “We couldn’t have asked for a better, more beautiful weekend celebration. So so many happy tears were shed, laughs & smiles were had, & so much love was felt.

“Evan [McClintock, her husband] and I are feeling so grateful for all of the family & friends that traveled to support us and be a part of this new chapter of our lives as husband & wife.”

She previously opened up about her “surreal” childhood as Eminem’s daughter on an episode of her Just a Little Shady podcast.

“I remember going on [Eminem’s tour bus] and all our memories of being young were so cool and unique to look back at now,” Hailie’s friend and co-host Brittany Ednie said. “But at the time, it felt so normal and not anything strange or different. I mean, ’cause we didn’t know any better.”

Hailie added: “Obviously we were in a normal public school, we never thought anything was different. Like, I don’t know, we had so many normal experiences that when something like that happened, I thought like, ‘Oh, everybody else does this too.’ Not realizing that like, no, that’s freaking weird.

Ruto goes to the Gen Zs; this time, complete with a fresh ‘creative’ office

Images of Kenyan President William Ruto and his entourage alighting from a Kenya Airways plane upon their arrival in China on Monday stirred up social media among the country’s famed digital activists.

The reactions were mostly laudatory, with some commentators praising the President for promoting the national carrier’s brand while in Beijing to attend the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) Summit.

“Arrived in Beijing for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit. The meeting presents an opportunity for Africa to renew and strengthen its partnership with China. Over the years, China has proven to be a true development partner, significantly revamping our infrastructure. We look forward to leveraging these ties to accelerate our transformation,” Dr Ruto tweeted.

It was not the first time Dr Ruto was flying out on a Kenya Airways plane.

But State House’s decision to play up the President’s travel plans for high-profile events abroad, underscores deep concerns about his image in the wake of a groundswell of discontent over wasteful government spending and public display of opulence by senior administration figures, which culminated into the youth-led uprising against him in June and July.

The youth-led or Gen Z protests were triggered by the punitive taxes introduced through the Finance Bill 2024 in June.

But there were already signs of danger for the President in May, when he was heavily criticised on social media for using a private jet for his three-day State visit to the US.

Although State House issued a statement that the private jet had been hired with donations from the United Arab Emirates, people close to Dr Ruto remained dismissive about the threats of digital activism and didn’t see the protests coming.

Only four days to the outbreak of the protests in Nairobi on June 18, the President’s chief economic adviser, David Ndii, put out a post on X (formerly Twitter) mocking the government critics on social media, most of them youth in their 20s and 30s, as harmless and clueless.

“Politics is a contact sport. Digital activism is just wa**ng. Any jackass can kick down a barn but it takes a good carpenter to build one,” he said in a post on June 14 in response to complaints about the Finance Bill.

But in the wake of a wave of street protests mobilised mostly on digital platforms, which saw Parliament overrun on June 25 and forced Dr Ruto to dismiss his Cabinet, a major rebranding of the president and his administration appears to be under way.

The possibility of the Gen Z movement disrupting the traditional voting patterns in Kenya’s next elections in 2027 is also believed to be weighing on the minds of the president’s political strategists.

In the past two weeks alone, he has spoken at two town hall meetings in Nairobi and Kisumu, seeking to explain his administration’s achievements and policies to the majority youthful audiences.

The Nairobi town meeting on August 25, was specifically organised for the president to engage university students on a controversial new cost-sharing funding model that critics warn will make needy students drop out.

In his latest high-profile public appointments, Dr Ruto picked his long-time digital strategist and propagandist, Dennis Itumbi, to head a new office of creative economy and special projects.

The office has been tasked with rolling out the youth-focused town hall meetings countrywide and amplifying the successes of the government’s job creation efforts through programmes such as affordable housing, digital hubs, migrant labour export and public service internships.

President Ruto has in recent public meetings also announced plans to reintroduce the mass youth employment programme, popular as Kazi kwa Vijana (work for youth), targeting young people rural areas and urban slums.

The programme, which was first implemented with World Bank funding in 2009 to tackle the youth unemployment in the country, recruits young people to work on community projects such as tree planting, garbage collection, and building or repairing infrastructure and public amenities.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the president on his rebranding mission.

At every town meeting so far, he has been confronted with the uncomfortable questions about widespread human rights violations by police during the Gen-Z protests, including killings, abductions and enforced disappearances.

Paris sports site has been renamed after Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei

A Paris sports site has been renamed after Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei after she was burned alive by her ex-boyfriend

The athlete succumbed to horrendous injuries on Thursday, September 5, sustained after she was doused in petrol and set alight in her home.

The 33-year-old suffered burns to 80 percent of her body in Sunday’s brutal attack that was allegedly carried out by her ex-boyfriend, according to medical officials.

She was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. But yesterday the facility’s acting director Dr Owen Menach confirmed Cheptegei had died.

Paris renames sports site after Ugandan marathon runner, Rebecca Cheptegei after she was burned alive by her partner

Now Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has announced that a sports site in the capital has been renamed after the runner, while paying tribute to the Ugandan athlete, Le Monde reports.

She said: ‘Paris will not forget her.

‘We will dedicate a sports site to him so that his memory and his history remain among us and contribute to carrying the message of equality, which is a message carried by the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

‘She dazzled us here in Paris.

We saw her. Her beauty, her strength, her freedom, and it was probably her beauty, her strength, and her freedom that were intolerable for the person who committed this murder.’

Cheptegei competed in the marathon at the Olympics last month, finishing in 44th place.

Kenyan police confirmed the runner was attacked at her house in western Trans Nzoia County, close to the Ugandan border, where she had recently relocated to be closer to superior Kenyan training facilities.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said her former partner Dickson Ndiema had bought a can of petrol, poured it on her, and set her ablaze during a disagreement on Sunday.

Police discovered a five-litre jerry can, a bag, and a burned phone at the scene of the incident, according to Kenyan newspaper The Nation.

Dr Menach told Kenyan press: ‘Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed.’

The president of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) Donald Rukare said in a post on X: ‘We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei… following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.

‘This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,’ he added.

A press release from the UOC bearing Rukare’s signature later urged law enforcement agencies ‘to take swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrator to justice’.

President of World Athletics Sebastian Coe said: ‘Our sport has lost a talented athlete in the most tragic circumstances.

‘Rebecca was an incredibly versatile runner who still had a lot to give on the roads, mountains and cross-country tracks.’

Rebecca’s father Joseph Cheptegei, speaking earlier this week from hospital alongside his other daughter Evalyne Chelagat, claimed that the two were fighting over her land at Endebes in Trans Nzoia shortly before the alleged attack occurred.

‘They were just friends and I wonder why he wanted to take away things belonging to my daughter,’ Cheptegei Snr told The Star, revealing also that his daughter’s two children are fathered by a different man living in Uganda.

He went on to claim that Cheptegei and Ndiema, who he alleges have been separated for a long time are involved in a case being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya.

According to Cheptegei Snr and Police Commander Kosiom, the ex-boyfriend sneaked into his daughter’s home to stage the attack.

UN: Sudan army and RSF committed abuses, peacekeepers needed

0

Both sides in Sudan’s civil war have committed abuses that may amount to war crimes, and world powers need to send in peacekeepers and widen an arms embargo to protect civilians, a UN-mandated mission said on Friday, September 6.

Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have both raped and attacked civilians, used torture and made arbitrary arrests, according to the report that said it was based on 182 interviews with survivors, relatives and witnesses.

“The gravity of our findings and failure of the warring parties to protect civilians underscores the need for urgent and immediate intervention,” the UN fact-finding mission’s chair, Mohamed Chande Othman, told reporters.

Both sides have dismissed past accusations from the US and rights groups and have accused each other of carrying out abuses. Neither immediately responded to requests for comment on Friday, or released a statement in response to the report.

Othman and the two other mission members called for an independent force to be deployed without delay.

“We cannot continue to have people dying before our eyes and do nothing about it,” mission member Mona Rishmawi said. A UN-mandated peacekeeping force was a possibility, she added.

The mission called for the expansion of an existing UN arms embargo that currently applies only to the western region of Darfur where thousands of ethnic killings have been reported. The war that started in Khartoum in April last year has spread to 14 of the country’s 18 states.

Hundreds of rapes reported

The mission said it had also found reasonable grounds to believe the RSF and its allied militias had committed additional war crimes including the abduction of women who were forced into sexual slavery and the recruitment of child soldiers.

Mission member Joy Ngozi Ezeilo said unnamed support groups had received reports of more than 400 rapes in the first year of the war, but the real number was probably much higher.

“The rare brutality of this war will have a devastating and long-lasting psychological impact on children,” she said.

The fact-finding team said it had tried to contact Sudanese authorities on multiple occasions but received no answer. It said the RSF had asked to cooperate with the mission, without elaborating.

The conflict began when competition between the army and the RSF, which had previously shared power after staging a coup, flared into open warfare.

Civilians in Sudan are facing worsening famine, mass displacement and disease after 17 months of war, aid agencies say.

US-led mediators said last month that they had secured guarantees from both parties at talks in Switzerland to improve access for humanitarian aid, but that the Sudanese army’s absence from the discussions had hindered progress.

“We will continue to push all parties to come to a negotiated settlement that allows the Sudanese people to shape their political future,” White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Friday, reiterating the Biden administration’s condemnation of the violence.

The report is the three-member mission’s first since its creation in October 2023 by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

A group of Western countries including Britain will call for the UN mission’s renewal at a meeting this month, with diplomats expecting opposition from Sudan which says the war is an internal affair.

‘I considered su!c!de’ – Woman ‘raped by 72 men’ while unconscious says

0

A French woman whose husband allegedly let 72 men rape her while she was unconscious over a period of 10 years has told the judge she nearly took her life after the abuse was revealed.

Gisèle, 72, told the court in Avingon, France on Friday, September 6 that she wanted to ‘disappear’ after her husband’s abuse was revealed to her.

Her husband Dominique Pélicot, whom she’s currently getting a divorce from, faced each other in court for the first time on Thursday in what is one of France’s biggest rape cases.

Gisèle said: ‘I only wanted one thing and that was to disappear. I told myself: ”I am going to get in my car with my dog and end it all.”

‘When I told my sons about this, I don’t think they really understood, they were withdrawn… I think they were in a state of shock. They said: ”Don’t say such silly things”.

‘[That] evening, the children rang all the time saying ”don’t disappear”… they were worried I might die.’

On Thursday the victim bravely told the court today she had been tested for HIV: ‘I was diagnosed with four sexually transmitted diseases at the Versailles medical forensic unit.’

Gisèle also told the court how she fell in love with Dominique and began married life with him, before her ‘world collapsed’ when she discovered his crimes.

Mr Pélicot wept as Gisèle described her feelings after finding out about her husband’s crimes: ‘Feelings of disgust. We had everything, we had a great life. I don’t understand how this could have happened.’

Gisèle, who has waived her right to anonymity, first of all thanked the lieutenant in the town of Carpentras who arrested her husband for secretly filming up women’s skirts in a supermarket.

‘He saved my life and I probably wouldn’t be here without him,’ said the mother-of-three.

Referring to ‘Mr Pélicot’, she recalled the moment he confessed to taking the pictures.

Police found images on Mr Pélicot’s camera and laptop that showed multiple alleged rapes of his wife between 2011 and 2020, the majority committed by strangers that Mr Pélicot had found online.

Detectives have listed a total of 92 rapes committed by 72 men, 51 of whom have been identified.

The Avignon aggravated rape case continues, and is due to last until December 21.

DNA tests to identify children who died in Kenya school fire

0

DNA testing will begin on Monday to identify the bodies of children who died in a fire at a Kenyan boarding school, local authorities have said.

At least 21 children, with an average age of nine, are believed to have died, with one official telling journalists some of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

The fire broke out in a dormitory housing 156 boys at the Hillside Endarasha Academy around 23:00 local time on Thursday. Firefighters were delayed by bad roads, but people living nearby rushed to help with rescue efforts.

Officials say 17 children remain unaccounted for – with some parents and relatives camping at the school to demand answers.

Government officials have called on those who helped rescue students to bring the children back to the school to help with tracing.

The Red Cross have set up a tracing desk and are offering support to those affected.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Investigators should “assess whether or not the tragedy may have resulted from negligence and/or recklessness”, the chief prosecutor said in a statement.

Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga said the tragedy “evokes bad memories of other similar school fire incidents” that many times pointed to a failure to comply with safety standards.

It “is a catastrophe beyond our imagination”, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said at the school on Saturday. “It is truly devastating for the nation to lose such a number of young and promising Kenyans. Our hearts are heavy.”

Mr Mwaura urged the media to not “rush to make conclusions about the numbers” of dead as DNA testing would take days.

On Saturday, criminal investigators and government pathologists sealed off the site for analysis.

President William Ruto has declared a three-day national mourning period to start on Monday.

There have been a number of incidents of fires at Kenyan boarding schools in recent years, prompting national concerns about safety standards.

In 2022, a dormitory in western Kenya burnt down, with several students later arrested on suspicion of arson.

In 2017, 10 students died in an arson attack at Moi Girls High School in the capital Nairobi.

At least 67 students died in Machakos County, south-east of Nairobi, in the deadliest Kenyan school arson that took place more than 20 years ago.

A report released four years ago warned that many secondary schools in Kenya were not well prepared to respond to fires and didn’t adhere to government safety standards.

The report by the country’s auditor general revealed that many schools lacked proper equipment to handle fire outbreaks and were not constructed in accordance with required safety standards.

China shifts gear in Africa as it looks to a green future

President Xi Jinping pledged about $50bn of investment to Africa over three years
Pulling power. That is what China still has across Africa.

While the influence of others on the continent is questioned – for instance, France and the rest of the EU are being shunned by the Sahelian military juntas, and Russia’s mercenary-security “offer” is regarded with deep mistrust by pro-Western African governments – China has navigated a middle way.

Delegations from more than 50 states from across the African continent decided it was worth making the trip to Beijing for the latest China-Africa summit – known as the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (Focac) – this week.

Dozens of leaders turned up – as well as UN chief António Guterres.
Alongside veterans such as Congo-Brazzaville strongman Denis Sassou-Nguesso, this was a first such gathering for the new Senegalese head of state Bassirou Diomaye Faye – rewarded with a front-row place next to President Xi Jinping in a family photo of leaders and their spouses.

For African governments resentful of the pressure to take sides in international disputes, China now appears as a refreshingly reliable partner, ready to collaborate without discrimination both with the allies of Moscow and with civilian-ruled states that are closer to Europe and the US.

Beijing certainly strikes a hard bargain in pursuit of its economic self-interest and need for natural raw materials, in return for development support, especially the construction of heavy infrastructure.

It is regularly accused of inducing African countries to take on too much debt, and was initially slow to join the international effort to alleviate the crushing repayment burden weighing upon some countries.

Even now, it refuses to grant outright debt cancellations.

Complaints that China reserves too many skilled construction roles for its own workers, at the expense of training Africans, are commonplace. The growing presence of Chinese traders has triggered resentments among some traditionally predominant commercial communities.

But for many African governments these are quibbles.

What they appreciate in an increasingly polarised world is Beijing’s non-partisan readiness to remain strongly engaged pretty much everywhere, without political strings.

Of course, it is the Chinese construction of big-ticket transport projects, which international development institutions and Western commercial investors so often treat with caution, that attracts the most attention.

The July 2023 coup in Niger has not dissuaded the Chinese from completing a 2,000km (1,200-mile) pipeline to deliver the country’s growing oil output to an export terminal in Benin.

In Guinea, also under military rule, the China-based Winning Consortium is well advanced in the construction of a 600km railway to the coast. This will run from one of the world’s largest iron ore deposits at Simandou, a scheme for which successive Guinean governments had struggled to secure international donor support.

And this week’s Focac summit brought a continuation of this strategy, with the announcement of a further 360bn yuan ($50.7bn; £36.6bn) in funding, for the next three years.

But this time there is a difference, with a heavy summit focus on the green energy transition, including investment in manufacturing in Africa, particularly electric vehicles.

That is important in both practical and symbolic terms for a continent that has famously lagged far behind Asia in developing sophisticated industries.

But the summit also brought promises of support for other types of green projects, with Mr Xi declaring a readiness to launch 30 clean energy projects and to co-operate in the nuclear sector.

That latter hint touches on a sore point for African commentators resentful of the fact that France has for decades mined Niger’s uranium to supply its own nuclear power sector without proposing generation projects for West Africa.
China is also active in the Nigerien uranium mining sector.

But amid the intensely complex technical and security challenges of the nuclear sector, it remains to be seen whether the Chinese president’s promise will really amount to more than comforting warm words.

Moreover, the Focac summit skated around some of the more sensitive and contentious environmental issues – such as the regular accusations that big Chinese vessels engage in over-fishing, leaving little for the local artisanal boats to catch.

Tactfully, Sierra Leone’s Fisheries Minister Princess Dugba preferred to focus on praising the government there for its construction of a new fishing port.
Meanwhile Mr Xi sought to perpetuate China’s self-presentation as a fellow member of the “global south”, pointing out that his country and Africa together account for a third of the world’s population.

The summit adopted a Beijing Declaration on building “a shared future in the new era” and the Beijing Action Plan for 2025-2027.

Calling on Chinese contractors to return to Africa now that disruptive Covid-era curbs were gone, Mr Xi talked of a tripling of infrastructure schemes, the creation of one million jobs and co-operation across a range of sectors.

But it is not entirely clear what the promised 360bn yuan in financing – an apparent bid to promote the international profile of the Chinese currency – will amount to in concrete terms.

The president said that 210bn yuan ($29.6bn) would be provided through credit lines, while there would be 70bn yuan ($9.9bn) in business investments.

He also announced $280m in military and food aid – but for an entire continent that is a marginal sum, in contrast to the big-budget economic funding.

It remains to be seen how that new financing is distributed – and whether it is managed in a way that avoids pushing some countries back into unsustainable debt.

Over the past 10-15 years Chinese lending to African countries desperate to press forward with the construction of infrastructure was widely blamed for helping to push them back into a debt crisis barely two decades after they benefitted from international debt-forgiveness schemes.

In 2016, the peak year, $30bn in Chinese lending to Africa was announced.

Projects were often financed by China Eximbank on terms that were usually kept confidential but were almost certainly much more expensive than funding from the soft credit windows of institutions like the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the African Development Bank, or the grant aid provided by many Western government donors.

However, defenders of China’s approach could quite reasonably point out that it was frequently willing to finance and build projects, and accept levels of risk, in circumstances where other partners were not willing to tread or commit resources on the necessary scale.

And to some extent, a natural division of labour evolved, where China funded and built heavy infrastructure, while Western donors and the big development institutions financed the equally essential “soft” investments – in health and education, skills training, government systems, food security, rural resilience and so on.

As the scale of the new financial pressures weighing upon many countries became clear, particularly amid the global economic slowdown caused by the pandemic, the G20 countries set up the Common Framework, to get indebted countries back on to a sustainable track.

China did join in the effort to restructure developing countries’ repayment burdens. But critics accused it of not doing enough.

Now, several years on, this week’s Focac summit suggests the picture may be poised for a further evolution.

Just as, two decades ago, China began to fill a role in infrastructure development that Africa’s traditional donors could no longer adequately fill, Beijing now has ambitions to become a key partner for the continent in new hi-tech industry and green technology on a scale that many European and North American companies are unwilling or unable to contemplate.

While Western investment in Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan countries, continues to be dominated largely by mining, oil, gas and agriculture, and Russia focuses on security services for favoured regimes, Beijing talks of a broader economic vision.

However, the question is whether, beyond Mr Xi’s rhetoric, this will amount to a real diversification into new sectors such as green industry.

Beyond a few niche prestige projects – will the traditional focus on big infrastructure continue to predominate?

It is not yet clear if the China-Africa relationship is poised for a fundamental change.

Georgia school shooter, Colt Gray was bullied by classmates who called him gay

Georgia school shooter, Colt Gray was bullied by classmates who called him gay, his father told detectives in an interview last year.

Colin Grey, 54, made the claims when he was interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s office after the FBI received a tip that his son had threatened a shooting at his middle school.

‘It was very difficult for him to go to school and not get picked on,’ Colin Gray told an investigator, according to a transcript of the conversation obtained by DailyMail.

The father added: ‘It went from one thing to another… I was trying to get him on the golf team… [they were like] Oh, look, Colt’s gay. He’s dating that guy. Just ridiculed him day after day after day.’

Gray, 14, is charged as an adult in the deaths of Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. Nine people were also hurt in Wednesday’s attack at Apalachee High school in Winder, outside of Atlanta.

He and his father appeared in back-to-back hearings Friday morning with about 50 onlookers in the courtroom. The elder Gray is also charged in connection with the shooting, including with counts of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder.

Colin Gray told police this week he purchased the weapon used in the killings as a Christmas present for his son last December, according to authorities.

The teen was interviewed after the sheriff received a tip from the FBI that Gray, then 13, ‘had possibly threatened to shoot up a middle school tomorrow.’ The threat was made on Discord, a social media platform popular with video gamers, according to the sheriff’s office incident report.

Speaking to police in May, 2023, Colin said he had recently separated from his son’s mother, and that ‘she took his younger two’ kids, leaving him to care for Colt, who he said was struggling at Jefferson Middle School.

The father said Colt ‘gets flustered and under pressure,’ and ‘doesn’t really think straight.’

Colin added that he was trying to teach his son about weapons and get him interested in the outdoors in order to ‘get him away from those video games.’

He showed the officer a picture of Colt with blood smeared on his face and said it was from when the teen shot his first deer, which the father described as the ‘best day ever.’

‘He knows the seriousness of weapons and what they can do, and how to use them and not use them,’ Colin Gray said according to a transcript obtained from the sheriff’s office.

The father claimed he and his son talked about school shootings ‘quite a bit,’ adding that ‘you never really know and I don’t want anything to happen to him.’

Colin reportedly assured officers that he would be ‘mad as hell’ if he learned the allegations about his son making threats were true, and that ‘all the guns [would] go away.’

On Friday the teen appeared in court in person, dressed in a green t-shirt and grey sweat pants. He kept his head down, with his hair covering his face, and spoke softly only to Judge Currie Mingledorff, replying ‘yes sir’ when asked to confirm his name.

Meanwhile, his father cried as he appeared shortly after his son in the same courtroom, charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two of second-degree murder, and eight of cruelty to children.

Judge Mingledorff brought Gray back in to correct a statement he made, telling him: ‘I wanted to make it clear to you that the penalty does not include death. It includes life without the possibility of parole or with the possibility of parole.’

Ramaphosa’s GNU partner suggests scrapping Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Affirmative Action (AA) policies

0

The Freedom Front Plus has urged the removal of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Affirmative Action (AA) policies, arguing that they are detrimental and obstruct economic growth.

The party said this during a debate in Parliament on measures to relieve the mounting financial pressure of living costs on households.

Black Economic Empowerment is a distinct economic policy that seeks to alter the structure of ownership and control in the economy. On the other hand, one of the cornerstones of attempts to transform the workplace is the affirmative action policy in South Africa, which was introduced in 1998.

There have been complaints and calls for the policy to be looked at again.

In 2022, anti-apartheid activist Barbara Hogan said BEE prioritises those with political connections and that the bulk of black South Africans remains unempowered.

“It became an excluding thing where only people with political connections and status could benefit from the policies and the bulk of black South Africans remained unempowered,” she said.

Meanwhile, FF Plus member of Parliament Philip van Staden said the policy introduced by the African National Congress (ANC) when it first came into power has done nothing but promote patronage to the detriment of the economy and the general population, which has been plunged into poverty.

He said the only antidote to rising living costs, which is a given, is having a job with a steady income.

Further, van Staden cited a poll by a financial institution that showed that 55% of South Africans are currently unable to save and that 31% are not saving for their retirement at all. Moreover, 11% of the population spends more than they earn monthly. They survive on debt.

“So, it comes as no surprise that thousands of people who do have a pension fund have already applied to make withdrawals from their retirement funds with the implementation of the new two-pot system. The Government Employee Pension Fund (GEPF) received 17 000 such applications in just one week.

“This undeniably shows that South Africans are struggling financially. The Government of National Unity (GNU) is a ray of hope, but decisive action is needed to create more jobs. The country’s general unemployment rate has exceeded 44%. More than 64% of those aged between 15 and 24 are unemployed,” he said.

This is not the first time political parties and businesses have called for BEE and AA to be scrapped.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA have been vocal in urging government to do away with the “discriminatory” policies.

In 2023, the Constitutional Court declared the Department of Tourism’s “discriminatory” Tourism Equity Fund for granting relief only to businesses that were 51% black-owned unlawful.

The decision came after the department appealed against the 2021 Supreme Court of Appeal’s 2021 ruling in favour of AfriForum and Solidarity in terms of the use of black economic empowerment (BEE) as criteria for granting relief from the Tourism Equity Fund was unlawful.

At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic Mmamoloko Kubayi, the then Minister of Tourism, introduced the Equity Fund in 2020 as an institution that would only allocate loans and grants to businesses with at least 51% black ownership.

Ugandan Marathon Runner Rebecca Cheptegei’s Father Slammed for Mourning Loss of ‘Breadwinner’ Daughter”

Netizens have criticised the father of a Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei after he mourned her death. Rebecca was killed when her ex-boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her on fire, just weeks after competing in the Paris Olympics.

The 33-year-old athlete passed away on Wednesday after fighting for her life at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

Ugandan Marathon Runner Rebecca Cheptegei’s Father Mourns Daughter
In an emotional interview with SwitchTV, Rebecca’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed profound grief, calling her the family’s breadwinner.

“I have lost a daughter who helped me in many ways,” he said tearfully.

Tearfully, he spoke about how her death would impact the family, especially in ensuring the education of her younger siblings.

“We have children in secondary schools, and I don’t know how we are going to cope with this challenge to ensure they complete their studies,” he lamented.

Online Backlash and Divided Opinions
After SwitchTV shared his comments on X (formerly Twitter), many users accused him of focusing more on the loss of financial support than on his daughter’s tragic death. Others urged caution, asking people not to jump to conclusions based on a single quote. Here are some reactions:

@KhadijaGarba19:

He’s more devastated that the privileges that comes with her hardwork/talent is gone than he is about the fact that he just lost a daughter, his daughter?

@mrmohkdper:

I think you people should stop drawing conclusions from a cherrypicked lines quoted from what he said so far. Saying that doesn’t mean she’s not of any value to him. People mention the goods of their deceased and equally lament on how the aftermath is going to be like because they’re the ones taking care of that responsibilities, who’s going to do that for them now that they have lost the one doing it??

@CuriousCourtnie:

Throw the man in the bin!

@wendytheewitch:

Being a woman is honestly terrible 😭
She was murdered but her father is upset not because she’s dead but because she was the breadwinner and now the family source of income is no more.

@MeMe_Blvck:

Sooooo…he’s sad that he lost his cash cow and not his daughter????….got it

Zimbabweans Fire Shots At Local ISPs As They Welcome Starlink

Zimbabweans Lash Out at Local ISPs, Praise Starlink’s Entry

Zimbabweans are firing shots at local internet service providers (ISPs) after the announcement that Starlink is now live in the country. Many took to social media to express their frustration with existing providers, accusing them of overcharging and delivering subpar services. The arrival of Starlink has sparked excitement, with many hoping it will spell doom for local ISPs.

Starlink’s Arrival Stirs the Pot

Starlink’s entry into Zimbabwe has been met with widespread enthusiasm. The standard Starlink kit costs $350, with a monthly subscription of $50, offering speeds up to 200 Mbps. Shipping will cost an additional $23.

A more portable option, the Starlink mini kit, costs $200, with a $30 monthly fee, providing speeds up to 100 Mbps. Shipping for this option also costs $23. Zimbabweans are eager for these alternatives, especially given the issues they’ve faced with local ISPs.

One user, Asterius Stan, didn’t mince words, saying,

“I hope ZOL burns to the ground.”

Another, Mayibo, echoed the sentiment, tweeting,

“RIP Zol, the evil you have done to us is enough.”

The Impact on Local ISPs

Many Zimbabweans believe the introduction of Starlink will force local ISPs to reconsider their pricing and service quality.

MLM, a Twitter user, pointed out the broader implications:

“This is huge, man. So many kids are going to benefit from this from all backgrounds. I like how it also pushed Econet into a corner to have cheaper packages. The ripple effect will be huge in the ISP sector.”

Nobiechishyy added,

“Econet used to charge about 20 gig per months for 40 US. After realising starlink is about to charge 50us for subscription, it then put unlimited data on 45 dollars per month. Which means, the company will still make profit, so , they were robbing us all along?”

Some users are already predicting the downfall of local providers. Bobby Axe tweeted,

“R.I.P to these local service providers,”

On the other hand, Mo-fela highlighted the steep prices of local ISPs, noting,

“To think last November ZOL had increased their cheapest uncapped package to $350/month.”

Mixed Reactions

Not everyone is entirely sold on Starlink, though. The cost remains a concern for some, with CycleChange UK stating,

“The pricing might be steep for some, but unlimited data is a game-changer.”

Despite this, the overall sentiment suggests that Zimbabweans are ready to embrace this new option and leave behind their frustrations with local ISPs.

As one Twitter user, Bloggo Jones, put it:

“@liquidhomezim has to further reduce their prices or we out for real.”

I WAS A MINI PRESIDENT, LUSAMBO TELLS COURT AS HE OPENS DEFENSE

I WAS A MINI PRESIDENT, LUSAMBO TELLS COURT AS HE OPENS DEFENSE

PEOPLE in the public gallery along with court officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Court were almost falling and rolling on the floor with uncontrollable laughter when Bowman Lusambo said during his time as Copperbelt Province minister, he was a mini president.

Appearing before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu in a corruption-related case, the Bulldozer said he had supervisory powers over the office of the vice-president, the army among other government agencies.

Lusambo is facing 10 corruption-related charges before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court; among them one count of corrupt acquisition of public property, five counts of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime, three counts of tax evasion and one count of conspiracy to defraud.

He is jointly charged with his wife Nancy Manase for possessing four houses in Silverest Gardens, Chongwe which were suspected to be procceds of crime.

Immediately he took the stand, Lusambo clothed himself with the powers of an adjudicator to vindicate his wife.

“First and foremost, I want to put on record that my wife, Nancy Natasha Manase, she is wrongly in this court, there’s nothing that she has done,” he explained.

Lusambo said he became a business mogul at a tender age and he supplied audio sound system to his customers together with his late brother.

“As Bowman Lusambo, I was not born in 2015 or 2021, I was born in 1976 from Mr and Mrs Lusambo. In 1996, I joined my brother’s company called Nuclear Sounds, our co-business was supplying music system to any client who needed music system such as speakers, amplifiers, microphones, keyboards, mixers, guitars including their accessories which you will need in the music industry.” He said.

“The manager was Henry Kantule Lusambo.
In 2009 he passed on and as a family I was appointed as the administrator of his estate to operate as a director.”

He explained that a year after his brother’s death, he changed the name of the company at PACRA from Nuclear Sound system to Nuclear Sound System General dealers.

“We continued with the co-business of nuclear sounds and we increased the capacity when it was not fashionable for people in Zambia to deal with music system, we were pioneeers of this business in our country we had clients beyond Lusaka and DRC. They We had enough income we were doing cross border business,” he said.

Lusambo told the Court that the said company obtained contracts from politicians to print and supply campaign material for MMD.

“We supplied to the late Peter Magande, Kapembwa Simbao, Bradford Machila, Felix Mutati, and the list is endless. In our supplying, we received a lot of money more than K500 million unrebased,” he said.

The former Lusaka province minister said, after he completed his grade 12 at Solwezi Technical College, he enrolled at Mulungushi University and studied sales and marketing for two years.

Lusambo said he joined politics at a younger age, as he was inspired by family members who were politicians.

“My father Mr Lusambo was a politician, am from a family of politicians among them Dawson Lifungwa, and Levy Patrick Mwanawasa who was my uncle,” he claimed.

Lusambo talked of his time on MMD and how he formed the MMD Die Hard Nationals Youth Wing in 2006.

“We were not on a salary but we were given logistical allowances. Political activities are voluntary in nature but, as political parties we fund those activities. The youth wing was funded to execute our duties effectively,” said.

“We worked with President Mwanawasa unfortunately he passed on in 2008. We campaigned with the late Tetamashimba for the late Ruphia Banda . After he won elections we changed the name from youth wing to Die Hard.”

Lusambo explained that he was elevated from the position of national youth wing coordinator, to MMD national youth secretary.

“Rupiah Banda governed the country for three years and resigned and we started looking for his replacement. As youths we decided to call Dr Nevers Mumba to come and participate in our intra-party politics,” he said.

“I worked with Raphael Nakacinda, Thomas Mainisa, I assumed the position for campaign manager for Dr Nevers Mumba. I was in charge for planning his political activities, and distributing the resources to our campaign teams across the country.”

Lusambo said Dr Mumba put him on a salary and he would get K60, 000 to K70, 000 and he bought him a personal vehicle a Toyota Prado to ease his movements.

“I worked with him from 2012 to 2017. He (Dr Mumba) decided to also pay for my housing allowance, we had our intra-party elections and he was voted as president of MMD defeating some candidates such as Felix Mutati and others,” He said.

“In April 2015 I was approached by PF to join their political party and I declined to join them because I was with Dr Nevers Mumba and we were just about to vote in the by election. I started working in Kabushi constituency and sank 45 boreholes. In 2016 the PF came back and asked me if I could represent them in Kabushi constituency.”

Lusambo said he emerged victorious in the election as PF candidate with a landslide of 22,600 votes as member of parliament for Kabushi Comstituency, and subsequently sworn in on August 16, 2016.

“After being sworn in as MP by Chief Justice Speaker Matibini, we were put on a monthly salary, sitting allowance, committee allowance, fuel allowance, among others. I can’t recall the dates but they are documented allowances,” he said.

“The fuel allowances we were given per kilometer as parliamentarians with constituencies outside Lusaka. Sitting allowance was given everyday but paid after two weeks. Committee allowance, as and when you are sitting as a committee but the rates were higher than the sitting allowance.”

He explained that as a member of parliament we undertook parliamentary tours within and outside Zambia, and parliament had different committees, and each committee would come up with their calendar which would be approved by the clerk of the National Assembly through the speaker of the National Assembly.

“We were given subsistence allowances at the rate of the country at which you are visiting. In September 2016 President Edgar Lungu appointed me as a minister for Copperbelt province and I was sworn in together with other ministers and we went to report in our stations,” Lusambo said.

“As a minister, I was a government number one representative. In short, I was a mini president for Copperbelt province. Under me I had office of the Vice President, Zambia Airforce, Zambia Army and other government entities.”

He said his job was to conduct government activities in the province, to promote government policies to the private sector, to attract foreign and local investors to invest in the province and ensure that there was service delivery to the residents of the Copperbelt Province.

He said he got more money as a minister compared to what he got as a member of parliament.

“The difference of the emoluments between minister and MP was huge. I earned alot as minister. As a minister I was entitled to an allowance every time I move out of the station,” He said.

“In 2016 I was entitled to gratuity, in 2018 to 2019 we had a mid term gratuity and at the end of parliament I had full gratuity at a total of K2.5 million. As a minister under the current government constitution we don’t get gratuity we get salaries and allowances.”

He said in 2018 Lungu transferred him to Lusaka as provincial minister and in 2021 he was re-elected as Kabushi MP.

Trial continues on Monday September 9.

Promissory Notes and Broken Promises: A Nation Left in the Dark- Dr. Mwelwa

Promissory Notes and Broken Promises: A Nation Left in the Dark

By Dr. Mwelwa

“By their fruits, you will know them.” These words from Matthew 7:16 echo across centuries, a timeless warning to leaders who promise much but deliver little. Promises, after all, are not meant to be the glittering crowns of words, but the sturdy roots of action. President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, a man whose silver tongue has often won him respect, returned from yet another foreign trip in September 2024, laden with documents and assurances. Yet, as with each of his previous excursions, Zambians are left wondering: where are the fruits of these promises?

It has become a pattern—a recurring chapter in the book of unfulfilled hopes. In September 2023, after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hichilema triumphantly announced the signing of over 15 Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) amounting to billions in promised investments. These MOUs were paraded like trophies, a testament to his ability to charm foreign leaders and secure investment. Yet, one year later, little has materialized. Factories are still dreams on paper, infrastructure remains untouched, and the ordinary Zambian still waits in the dark—literally and figuratively.

The issue is not just the failure of Chinese promissory notes to turn into tangible progress. It is the deeper, more insidious erosion of trust. As Proverbs 25:14 says, “Like clouds and wind without rain is one who boasts of gifts never given.” Every time Hichilema steps off a plane, his hands full of agreements and pledges, the clouds gather in Zambia’s skies. But, just as often, they pass without a drop of rain. Zambians, many of whom placed their hope in the man they believed would lead them into prosperity, are left parched.

Hichilema’s campaign rhetoric, so filled with promise, now rings hollow. “We will turn Zambia into a land of opportunity!” he once declared. But where are the opportunities for the countless citizens still without reliable power, without jobs, without the basic infrastructure to live a dignified life? Instead, they watch as their president continues his globe-trotting in search of elusive investments, while back home, the lights quite literally go out.

The recent energy crisis is perhaps the clearest indictment of this administration’s mismanagement. In a country where production has come to a standstill due to the lack of electricity, the refusal of the Energy Regulation Board to raise tariffs—at a time when an increase could have saved Zambia from crippling blackouts—seems like a misstep of monumental proportions. “Better we pay more for power,” some Zambians argue, “than live in the darkness where nothing moves.” But Hichilema’s government, whether out of shortsightedness or political maneuvering, chose to avoid the hard decisions. And so, Zambia remains in the dark, both literally and economically.

World leaders have often spoken of the dangers of making promises that cannot be fulfilled. Former U.S. President Barack Obama once remarked, “We cannot meet the challenges of today with the promises of yesterday.” And yet, this seems to be the very trap Hichilema has fallen into. His promises—so abundant and enthusiastically delivered—are relics of yesterday, unsuited to the harsh realities of today. As each month passes without significant progress, the Zambian people are beginning to see that these promises are nothing more than words.

In the Bible, leaders are cautioned against empty promises. Ecclesiastes 5:5 wisely counsels, “It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.” President Hichilema has made many vows, both to his people and to the international community. Yet as the MOUs gather dust and the investments remain mere intentions, one cannot help but wonder: why vow at all if there is no power, no will, no ability to fulfill it?

The real tragedy of Zambia’s current predicament lies not just in the darkness that envelops the country, but in the fading light of hope among its people. For a leader who once spoke with such conviction and clarity, the reality on the ground is a stark contrast to the soaring rhetoric of his campaign. The people need power, they need jobs, and they need a leader who can turn words into action. In a country blessed with abundant natural resources and a strategic location, the failure to deliver is not just a political misstep; it is a betrayal of the nation’s potential.

As Zambia waits, the lesson from scripture resounds even more clearly: “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” (Psalm 146:3). For now, it seems that Zambia’s future lies not in the promises of its president but in the hands of a people who, despite the broken pledges, continue to endure.

ZAWAPA IS A PEOPLES POLITICAL

ZAWAPA IS A PEOPLES POLITICAL PARTY, SAYS ZAWAPA PRESIDENT

Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA) President Howard Kunda has declared that ZAWAPA is a people’s political party aimed at putting citizens at the center of economic activities and development.

President Kunda, the former Muchinga Member of Parliament, said ZAWAPA was on the rise after being launched nine months ago in Ndola.

He said ZAWAPA is not owned by him and the leadership that registered the party but by the people of Zambia who are in dire need of economic emancipation and development.

“As ZAWAPA we have come on board to see how far we can take our nation. As you know our nation is very rich with land, water and minerals. I cannot even understand why we are begging from other countries. Zambians let us wake up and build the Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA). This is your party. As people who went to register ZAWAPA, we are just vessels but you, the Zambian people are the owners of this party,” President Kunda told the ZAWAPA Media in Ndola.

He said Zambia needs homegrown solutions to overcome its economic and social problems.

“Our nation is very rich with land, water and minerals. I cannot even understand why we are begging from other countries. We have plenty of water in Southern or Central Africa but we just want foreigners to exploit our minerals and resources.  If you analyse carefully, foreign investors just come to our country to offer our citizens salaries but salaries cannot develop our nation.  Most of the money from mining is externalized outside. If we empower our own people to become millionaires or billionaires it means the money will remain in Zambia. This is why ZAWAPA is here. We need to wake up as Zambians and work hard together to improve our economy,” President Kunda said.

He called for the harnessing of national resources for the benefit of the local people.

“We have all it takes to take Zambia to greater heights. Look at the way we are handling the issue of gold discovery, wherever gold is discovered the Government is unleashing security wings to disperse our people and some are losing lives. A caring Government is supposed to dialogue with the local people and help them to form cooperatives so that they equally benefit from gold. Why chase your own and bring foreigners to run gold mines,” President Kunda added.

He concluded:”As Zambians we should control our economy and control development. We should not just rush to the IMF or foreign investors. We want to celebrate independence but it is sad that 60 years after independence we are still wallowing in poverty.Independence is about taking charge of our minerals, our land and our agriculture sector.”

Desire for a child made me allow my wife to seek John General’s help – Witness

Desire for a child made me allow my wife to seek John General’s help – Witness

THE husband of a woman at the centre of Bishop John General’s rape case says the couple’s lack of children made him allow his wife to seek the Papa’s spiritual intervention.

This is in a matter where the ‘lecherous’ cleric and owner of Impact Life International ministries, John Nundwe is charged with rape before the Lusaka magistrates Court.

During cross examination by Nundwe’s lawyer Yokonia Daka, before magistrate Amy Masoja the witness said after his wife had an ectopic pregnancy, she longed for a child and continued seeking solutions to save her the shame of being called a sterile woman.

When asked if the cleric asked his wife to spread her legs open and stop wasting his time, the witness responded in the affirmative.

He confirmed that he also heard his wife asking the preacher to set her free.

He said based on the conversation, he could confirm that there was no consent from his wife.

He confirmed that when he entered the bedroom in a few seconds, he saw Nundwe pull his wife’s underwear and sanitary pad to the side before penetrating into her vagina.

When asked if the wife bathed after the alleged rape incident, the man responded in the affirmative.

Daka asked the witness if the traumatized wife, who could not speak during interrogations by the police managed to fetch water for bathing, and he responded in the affirmative.

The witness confirmed that whilst he was playing cat and mouse game with Nundwe, his wife discarded the pad and washed her underwear because it was stained.

Asked if his wife wrote to the Director of Public Prosecutions request that the rape charges against her pastor be dropped, the witness confirmed.

When asked why some elders had to reconcile him with his wife if at all she did nothing wrong, the man explained that his wife had sex with another man in his house hence, he needed counsel from the elders so that the couple could patch things up.

Asked if the couple reconciled because she demanded K800, 000 from Nundwe, the witness denied.

During cross examination by Elijah Siatwambo the witness confirmed that, Nundwe had never been to his house before the alleged rape incident, and that his wife is the one who gave him directions to their house.

He agreed that since his wife never informed him that Nundwe would visit their home on the date in question, she was capable of withholding information from him because, he does not allow his wife to welcome male visitors in his absence.

Asked if his wife had informed him that she had invited Nundwe to collect offering from their home, the witness denied.

When asked that praying for a child and a house are different, the witness said was infuriated and sought the court’s permission if he could cross examine Siatwambo instead.

Magistrate Masoja guided that ; “Just answer the questions, this is cross examination they will ask you anything and take you anywhere. Just answer don’t be annoyed, be calm am not just recording what you are saying, am also paying attention to your demeanor so just be calm.”

When asked if they were both troubled for being childless as a couple the witness confirmed saying they both needed to hear the cry of a baby in their home.

He agreed that since his wife was prayed for at Nundwe’s church it was imperative for him to be present when the cleric visited their home.

Asked where Nundwe placed his other hand when he pushed the wife’s pant and sanitary pad aside, the man said he did not know.

When asked if a man needs to use his hands to guide his manhood to penetrate a woman’s vagina, the witness said during sex, penetration can occur without the assistance of the hands.

He further confirmed that he was not privy to their communication, and he was not in a position to dispute that his wife invited Nundwe to his home to ‘sow a seed’.

Cross examination continues on October 9 ,21, and 22.

Kenneth Kaunda’s ‘Witch Doctor’

0

Kenneth Kaunda’s ‘Witch Doctor’

By Nkonkomalimba Kapumpe

Growing up we heard  many rumours and mysteries about KK’s spirituality, some are very funny stories like making Kavindele’s private parts disappear and later restored  when he wanted to stand against KK in UNIP . I would love to hear ba Kavindele’s side of the story, if it is even true.

There were also stories  of a certain room at State House that no one apart from KK was allowed to enter “The temple”, legend has it that people died or went mad when they entered that room.

The Guru behind all these mysteries surrounding KK was called Ranganathan. Yes, some of the stories were true and Francis Kaunda one of the many close friends and comrades of KK breifing mentions this   in his Book ” Things to Remember Not to forget”.

Francis Kaunda was a highly educated man in Zambia, Ghana and the USA. Having served as secretary to the Cabinet, chairman for ZCCM and a close confidante of KK; that at one time he used his personal expenses to book a hotel room for Mama betty Kaunda in London for almost a year when she and KK were on separation over a dispute regarding their son.

KK had promised not to save Panji  if he was found guilty by the courts, that’s another story for another day. ” I will sign the death warrant as President and later sit down to mourn him as a father” KK’s Powerful words for all to emulate.

Francis Kaunda narrates that President Kaunda’s spirituality was exploited by the Guru Ranganathan, to an extent that at one  point Kaunda could do nothing except if the Guru okeyed it. From the Book one can tell the Francis holds back so much on this subject that you have to read between the lines, because of his love and respect for KK expressed throughout the Book.

There was a reason for KK’s relationship with the Guru.Just after independence, KK was diagnosed with an illness at Lusaka General Hospital then.He then went to The United Kingdom and diagnosis was confirmed, and he was not given long to live. He later visited India, but came back without the illness. Some government officials become aware of this and started positioning themselves for succession.

But life being what it’s, the Guru Ranganathan appeared in KK’s life. Ranganathan came to Zambia as a teacher in Southern Province guided by a vision he saw in india about Kaunda, under unexplained circumstances fate allowed them to meet  . It’s is said Ranganathan is the man who “prayed” and cured KK of his illness. After that KK believed him to be a man of Great Powers.

It is narrated that the great Guru Ranganathan was so powerful that he prophesied the 1980 coup 10 years before it happened, stating the month in which it would happen and the names of those who would be involved. This information was recorded and put in a safe.
When the attempted coup took place time 10 years later as prophesied by Ranganathan, the safe was opened and all the alleged plotters were picked up. Proof of this is that there was no actual investigation of this plot, people were picked up and some confessed to the details of the plot, while others were released because there was no evidence linking them to its planning.

But for all his purported power, surprisingly, two weeks before the 1991 elections, Ranganathan fled Zambia for the UK where he settled in a plush mansion in Hendon, purchased for by Tiny Rowland.

There are many  stories, rumors and mysteries about KK that are linked to Ranganathan. Some former Ministers have mentioned how KK would suddenly  appear at certain meetings whenever they wanted to discuss him in a bad light lol.

This is how spirituality started at State House, in fact when KK left State House, there were prayers and fasting conducted by most prominent pastors, many of them still still alive today. Some of the names mentioned  to have participated in these prayers is bishop Joshua Band of Northmead  Assemblies .I would really love to hear his story and what exactly they were praying for.

To date State House is believed to be an extremely spiritual place, of all the former Presidents only RB seemed comfortable living there after Kaunda. Even today the President is rumoured to have been advised not to move there by his “advisors”. This story is contained in a comic article I have posted before about the monkeys at State House lol

I pray that Government invests in our history and make such books as the one by Francis Kaunda a national historical archive. This is so much we need to learn about our history. The book is mainly about Mining policies and KK’s leadership, some of the things we are even facing today but I found the Ranganathan story too interesting.

Even today 80% Zambia MPs are spiritualist. I know them chaps but those are stories for my or our Children, you can be sued.

Chipata woman returns from the dead, police and public left shocked

Chipata woman returns from the dead, police and public left shocked

THE country was left in shock, without electricity of course but due to the news that
a woman in Chipata, Eastern Province resurrected from the land of Maluba Maluba, five years after her forever slumber.

It’s like a modern day story of biblical Lazarus which left even the police in Eastern Province bewildered and residents astonished.

According to reports, 21-year-old Felopa Mbewe, of Chiwete village under Chief Chinunda in Chipangali died and was put six feet under the earth in 2019.

However, people who had the strength to flee, utilised their heels while those without strength froze after she reappeared in the flesh.

Felopa is alleged to have died at the age of 16 after taking a poisonous tablet following a misunderstanding with her mother.

And her family decided to immediately bury her a day after her death, as the village lacked a proper mortuary where they could preserve the body.

Eastern Province police commanding officer, Robertson Mweemba explained that as the village gathered to bury her, a weird strong whirlwind suddenly appeared making all the mourners to scamper in seven directions.

They had to wait for the wind to settle for them to finally bury her.

However, the drama was far from over. After all the mourners had left the funeral house, days after the burial, the family started noticing that food was disappearing from their house each time they left or reserved it.

This problem saw the worried parents of ‘late’ Felopa to seek spiritual intervention and they were guided to one Pastor by the name of Rueben Kalima as they suspected the problem was connected to their late daughter.

The pastor who conducted prayers with them including fasting at the mountain then revealed to them that their dead daughter was actually alive.

“You know it’s funny to hear such a story that somebody has resurrected,” the commissioner said.

However, after years of the pastor’s word, Felopa’s father, Mona Mbewe, 62 received news from his cousin last month that he had seen his daughter between the Zambia and Malawi border, confirming the words of the man of God.

Anxious to see if this was really his daughter, Mbewe organised for a Motor Bike with his son, picked his cousin who took them to see the alleged daughter, and indeed, they confirmed she was the one.

He later went back to his village and narrated to his wife confirming that the news of their daughter being alive was true, although she was found in a state were she is unable to talk.

Mbewe later booked a cab, went to pick her and took her back to the village.

“Now as police, when we got wind of it we became worried. So on Tuesday, I organised my officers and went to the police post where the girl was kept and we found her alive. We interviewed the father and the mother and the story was the same,” Mweemba said.

Mweemba said police are not going to confirm that really the girl is the late daughter of Mona Mbewe who died and was buried.

Authorities have however involved a state pathologist to help determine the case.

“We have already contacted the council, and when this state pathologist comes, we will take him to the village where this daughter was buried so that he can play his part and tell us his findings,” Mweemba said.

“The county will be informed if that is really the girl who was buried and resurrected. That is the final answer to our problem.” Said the Commissioner.

‘’HH’s businesses should transact with govt, but must tender/compete,’’ said UNZA students – Pt 1

‘’HH’s businesses should transact with govt, but must tender/compete,’’ said UNZA students – Pt 1

By Austin Mbozi

First, ‘Let President Hakainde Hichilema’s (HH) private businesses transact with government’. Second, ‘his businesses must go through competitive open tenders’. Third, ‘his businesses must not bear his name’. And fourth, ‘he must re-introduce laws on compulsory declaration of assets’. These are the two third majority opinions of my female-dominated class of business ethics students on Wednesday, 21 August 2024.

While some students suggested that HH should declare his assets even without a compelling law, the majority argued that this is unfair to him since without this law his competitors might not declare their business interests. ‘’Everybody must declare so that we see what businesses they all do, not forcing HH alone to face public scrutiny,’’ they finally agreed.

I am not politicking. I am only doing my taxi-paid job of state-university-teaching and asking the opinion of these students, the future public office bearers. In business ethics our main text books, American written, have case studies of alleged unethical behaviour of American firms. So I replace them with Zambian ethically controversial cases. And we are fair by hearing all sides. Some time back, I invited HH to UNZA’s then Commonwealth Youth Centre to explain alleged unethical wealth accumulation methods during the Chiluba-era privatisation of public companies. He arrived, but the Mwanawasa administration used UNZA bosses to chase him, thinking he was campaigning. Comrade Fred M’membe may confirm that I had written-invited him, dropped the invitation at his business colleague Mutembo Nchito’s office at Godfrey House, to explain their side on the Zambian Airways controversy. But he did not make it. Over the years we have featured business persons like Mr Chibamba ‘Business-Mentor’ Kanyama, Mr Chisha ‘Mondo-Music’ Folotiya, Mr Dante ‘Tamanga-Business’ Saunders, Ms Edith ‘Legana-Sausage’ Nawakwi, Dr Rozious ‘Exams-are-Easy’ Siatwaambo, Ms Silva ‘Catering’ Banda, Mr Richard ‘Daily- Nation’ Sakala, Mr Kunda ‘Ma-Flat-Builder’ Mwila, Mr Brebner ‘Ma-Chalk’ Changala etc.

We are not doing business law but business jurisprudence /business philosophy, where we challenge which laws of business need changing for allowing big business persons to get away with practices that are legally permissible but unfair to weaker people. Many allegations against President HH, even if they are proven to be true, like these about his privatisation-era, cannot win in court. They only raise ethical issues against law-abiding business persons.

Initially, I was irritated by my students’ without-first-thinking defence for President HH over recent allegations that he was selling his properties to government at inflated prices. I warned them that I knew that President HH was their darling as we saw in their welcoming ‘Bally wakulekafwe’/‘Viva meal allowances’ frenzy when he came for his honorary doctorate. I reminded them that I was also his supporter but warned that we are in academic circles where it is mandatory to charitably hear his opponents’ concerns and respond rationally/objectively.

So I showed them media/opposition claims that Aflife is owed by HH’s business partners Valentine Chitalu and Muna Hantuba (some opposition leaders claim that HH actually co-owns Aflife with these but he hides his name). Aflife then has 13.31 per cent shares in Zambeef. This makes HH/his partners a partial owner of Zambeef. Then as President of Zambia, he is chairman of the board of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to which he appointed Mr Cornwell Muleya as its boss. IDC is the supervising entity of Zambia National Service (ZNS). And again President HH is the Commander-in-Chief of ZNS, where again he appointed Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi as its boss. Then he allocated to ZNS huge state funds to produce food.

Then I told them the opposition’s following ‘corruption’ allegation connections, real or imagined, in their worst form. ‘HH secretly ordered the ZNS boss to ask the IDC boss to buy farmland for ZNS. Then he secretly ordered the IDC boss to look for land. Then he secretly tells his Aflife partners Mr Hantuba and Mr Chitalu to tell Zambeef to offer for sell ‘his’ Chiawa farm. Then he sends $13.5 million to IDC to pay Zembeef who will then pay dividends to Aflife who will then dividend-pay HH’s partners who will then secretly send part of this amount to HH’s pocket’.

Initially, my students were bewildered. Have they finally believed HH’s opponents? Not yet. They regrouped, raised hands to defend their HH, asking, ‘does HH sit on Aflife/ Zambeef boards?’ Some replied that this did not matter since he can still influence his partners without being on the boards. So, some suggested prohibiting public officers from doing business. But line failed when I asked them if they themselves will not open businesses that will transact with government when they graduate. They said they will. So will they close their businesses on assuming public office? When they replied ‘no’ I sympathised with them.

In his book, ‘Depths of my footprints’ former finance minister Ng’andu Magande (2018, page’s 137-138, 265-267) exposes public officers’ envy for personal business. In 1983, Magande got cash for his car loan while serving at finance ministry. Instead he bought a tractor for his leased Choma TBZ farm. UNIP SG Grey Zulu threatened him with dismissal for violating the Kenneth Kaunda-era ‘Leadership Code’ that prevented business involvement of public officers. Magande opted to resign. But UNIP compromised, ‘okay, just repay the loan’.

On 31 August 1988, Anglo-American Corporation boss Anderson Mazoka visited the now Lima Bank boss Magande to negotiate Anglo’s sale of Kaleya Engineering Limited. Magande envied Mazoka’s business life. So he privately formed a ‘partnership’ with Mazoka and HH, meeting in evenings in Mazoka’s ‘mentoring room’ at Anglo offices. Because he was a public officer Magande did not share-hold but was only a ‘sounding board’ member advising on government policies and regulations.

…Continued next Monday. Meanwhile, ask yourselves, ‘was Magande abusing his Lima Bank public office in his Mazoka/HH partnerships’?

The author teaches business ethics, encourages HH’s political opponents to whistleblow. But they must produce facts. Phone: 0978-741920, Email: austin.mbozi2017@gmail.com

STATEMENT ON TUESDAY’S SHOOTING -Bobi Wine

STATEMENT ON TUESDAY’S SHOOTING

Our friends and comrades in and out of Uganda, it is purely by the grace of God that I am able to address you here today, still alive and able to speak.

On Tuesday afternoon, together with some comrades, we set off from our residence in Magere to visit our lawyer, George Musisi’s home just about 5 miles away in Bulindo – Kira Municipality, for a private function.

The function went well and we left Counsel Musisi’s home without incident at about 5pm in the evening. But, like you must have seen some videos by now, having moved just a few meters away from his home, we met police officers charging in our direction, shooting explosives at us, at close range. You must have seen some of the comrades raising their hands up and pleading with the officers to stop the violence but all in vain.

The Police descended upon these innocent comrades and brutalized them so badly as they struggled to make sense of the situation. When my driver saw them charging towards my car, he rolled up the widows. Unfortunately, the car’s sunroof was still open so an officer sprayed pepper spray into the car which forced me and others to dash out of it. It was at that moment that the police aimed at me with what we learned was a teargas canister. The canister exploded right between my legs. That is how I ended up in my current state.

I must be a very lucky man because during the presidential campaigns of 2021, a similar explosive was thrown at me by the police while I was addressing the people of Elegu boarder town in Nothern Uganda. The explosive missed me and landed on and shattered the leg of an innocent lady, Zubeda. It was amputated and up to now, she continues to face extreme hardship. There has been no justice for her, close to 4 years later.

A similar canister was thrown into the room of a medical student, Sebuganda Richard at Lumumba Hall, Makerere University during a students’ protest. It exploded and shattered off his arm. On that treacherous 2021 presidential campaign trail, shortly after they shot in the head and nearly killed journalist Ashraf Kasirye, they aimed a similar explosive at another journalist, Ali Mivule, and injured him.

In their initial statement about the attack of Tuesday, Police claimed that I stumbled and injured myself. It is a shame that Police’s new spokesperson one Kituuma Rusoke has taken over from where Fred Enanga stopped. These officers are trained to lie in broad daylight without shame. Later, they issued another statement trying to change their original narrative. This was after more videos of the incident were shared on social media.

I salute the ordinary citizens who recorded Tuesday’s events as they unfolded. I thank them for heeding our message of using their cameras as weapons. If these videos hadn’t come out, you can be sure the regime would have maintained the single narrative that I stumbled and injured myself! You all remember that Mr. Museveni’s minister made similar claims when Hon. Zaake was gravely tortured. The Minister shamelessly told Parliament that Hon. Zaake caused his own injuries and bit his own ears! The High Court later ruled that he was indeed tortured!

I want to make another call to the people of Uganda to always record all these human rights violations. Do it safely but firmly. You recall that after murdering our comrade Ritah Nabukenya, Enanga at the time claimed that day, police cameras were not working. When they murdered Frank Ssenteza at a spot with many cameras, we asked for footage but they said they didn’t capture that incident. Same thing they did after the murder of Ziggy Wyne and Dan Kyeyune. This means that we can never hope to get footage from their own cameras, we must use our own cameras to capture the truth.  I saw Mr. Kituuma displaying videos of our previous events and also of some events after we had left the scene. But at the very spot where they attacked us, there are police cameras. The hypocrites did not show that footage which would have settled the debate! Why?

Away from that, let me say that often times the attention tends to be focused on me, like in this case, but these crimes affect many other people. On Tuesday for instance, many comrades who were attacked and battered are still nursing serious injuries. You must have seen videos of police officers who we pay to protect us beating these comrades, boxing them and kicking them with their boots. Totally unprovoked. Others are still in detained at unknown places for no crime whatsoever. Comrades Lukenge Sharif, Ssentongo Emmanuel and Kato Paul are still being detained illegally at Kira Division Police Station, way beyond the mandatory 48 hours!

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to put the Tuesday shooting in context, especially for the benefit of those who think we’re exaggerating our circumstances:

Exactly one month ago, the head of security at our Headquarters, comrade Achileo Kivumbi, was abducted near his home, tortured in military custody and then finally charged in the Court Martial after many hours of illegal detention. Counsel Musisi whom we had gone to visit is his lawyer. Achileo joined a long list of known and unknown comrades of ours that the regime has turned into political prisoners since we started challenging Gen. Museveni.  These political prisoners include Olivia Lutaaya, Machete Yasin, Kalanzi Sharif, and many others. At the start of this week, we were at Kitalya to check on several of these political prisoners. We also visited the FDC activists who were picked from Kenya recently, brought back to Uganda without following any due process, tortured, and finally charged with treason.

In the recent years, I have survived more than four assassination attempts.

The very first attempt was in Arua in August 2018. That fateful day, Museveni’s guards, the SFC, shot dead my driver Yasin Kawuma. They shot him thinking it was me since throughout the day I had been sitting in the same spot he was when he met his death.

On 1st December 2020, in Kayunga during the presidential campaign, the police threw a similar explosive at me. It exploded but luckily missed me by inches. The explosion tore the lips of my friend and music producer Dan Magic who was standing next to me. It also removed his teeth. He has had to undergo several corrective surgeries since then. He is currently in the UK for another surgery on his jaw.

That same 1st day of December 2020, we attempted to travel to Jinja for the remainder of the day’s campaign after taking Dan Magic to hospital. In Jinja, the Police and the military shot live bullets into the windscreen of our vehicle and in the Tyres. To date, I don’t know how we survived that shooting. It was just the power of God. We survived many other shootings and incidents and fake accidents staged by the regime.

Looking at all these incidents we have survived, we are convinced that the Museveni regime is determined to kill us. Only that they have still failed to create the perfect circumstances to assassinate us and then blame it on us. This is why they have tried so many times to provoke me and my team into a violent confrontation so that they use it as an excuse to justify the murder.

They justified murdering Yasin Kawuma by claiming that so many of us held one stone and used it to shatter the windshield of Museveni’s bullet proof car. They would later lie that they found me with machine guns and that I fought with the military. They did this to justify the torture they took me through. They are using a similar narrative to explain their actions of Tuesday.

I want to thank the comrades that we move with, the feet soldiers, for exhibiting extreme discipline and self-restraint even in circumstances when they would have been justified to use self-defence. It is this, our discipline that is still standing in the way of those who plan to get us out of the way.

We have received information that most of the officers involved in the Tuesday operation are actually military officers only disguising as polic e. Others are hardened criminals that the regime uses to commit crimes against Ugandans and are heavily rewarded by Museveni.

We are also informed that the man who was dressed in black t-shirt and police trousers whose photo went viral on social media is called Shadrack. Apparently, he was part of the notorious ‘Wembley’ group that conducted a number of extra-judicial killings before it was disbanded. He now masquerades as a pastor in Manyangwa to hide his criminality.

The man who threw that canister at me on Tuesday is called Twesigye Kaino Elias. His previous crimes against opposition leaders and supporters have been brought out, but as you can see, he has only been rewarded with promotions. Be sure that nothing will be done to punish these criminals in uniform. They will instead be rewarded.

Two days ago, the regime promoted Frank Mwesigwa to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP). Mwesigwa is the current director of operations in Uganda Police. His high-handed and criminal actions against us in Luuka led to the November 2020 massacre which left over 150 innocent people shot dead. He was rewarded with a promotion the same way one Enock Abaine who shot Ashraf Kasirye was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police.

The promotions are a message to other officers who still respect the law to act like the Mwesigwas of this world. Museveni himself sanctioned this criminality after the Arua incident. You remember, the shameless dictator said that there was an attempt to punish those who tortured us but that he shielded them since they had beaten me “properly”. That way, he assured these other criminals of security and protection, as long as they deal with his opponents with the same ruthlessness. This also explains the unprovoked violence that police visited upon us on Tuesday.

I sincerely appreciate all of you comrades and friends here and abroad for the love and solidarity you have showed us since Tuesday’s violence. I thank all of you comrades, as well as political, religious and cultural leaders from Uganda, Africa and the world who continue to reach out to us to express your sympathy. Comrades who have raised your voices at protests, press conferences, on social media, etc to condemn what happened, we are grateful. Our diaspora chapters, thank you very much!

We hope that Uganda’s development partners will take Tuesday’s actions by the regime against peaceful and unarmed citizens as a wake-up call. In several ways, you our friends have knowingly or unknowingly sponsored our oppression. We encourage you to review the support you give dictator Museveni’s regime because he uses most of it against the citizens of this country. Please act and act fast because we’re dying! We also request you to hold accountable the Commanders of security agencies that use lethal and unnecessary force and ammunition against citizens, in clear violation of international law. You should walk the talk.

I encourage all Ugandans of good will to remain firm in their demand for a better country. Whatever happens to anyone of us involved in the struggle, the survivors must keep up the fight until the war against dictatorship is won! People Power, our power!

Army roadblock for Mnangagwa

0

As President Emmerson Mnangagwa seeks to extend his term beyond the 2028 constitutional limit, despite his public claims of upholding constitutionalism, the military stands as a significant obstacle.

Online publication Newshawks claims that sources within the military inform the that Mnangagwa will be prevented from pursuing any constitutional changes to prolong his presidency, a move currently being pushed by his party, Zanu PF. The military is expected to leverage its institutional and operational power to block any such succession efforts.

Mnangagwa is engaged in a fierce internal power struggle with Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, who supported his rise to power through a 2017 coup. The battle for control over state resources and political influence is intensifying.

A military insider stated: “The army’s stance is unequivocal. The President is required to complete his constitutional second term and retire in 2028. From a military perspective, he should not have even been eligible for a second term. Although he publicly agrees to retire in 2028, he is privately signaling his supporters to push for a constitutional amendment to extend his term until 2030. This proposal is unpopular among the security forces and the general public, with only a few self-interested individuals supporting it.”

Despite Mnangagwa’s attempts to consolidate power, the military remains a decisive force in Zimbabwean politics. A recent report by the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute underscores the military’s crucial role: “The military has historically played a central role in Zimbabwean politics. As ZANU PF faces a significant succession battle, the military’s influence in intra-party politics will become more apparent, although it has not been overtly visible yet. The military is unlikely to remain passive in selecting Zanu PF’s new leader and the country’s head of state.

“It is probable that the military will exercise veto power in leadership elections, as it has done in the past. The office of the head of state is seen as requiring military credentials, and this likely extends to the Zanu PF leadership position as well. Consequently, the successor to President Mnangagwa is expected to be a military figure or a candidate backed by the military, rather than a civilian politician.

“The ongoing succession debate within Zanu PF, characterized by factionalism, creates a volatile scenario. Understanding the military’s internal dynamics and its stance on extending Mnangagwa’s presidency requires thorough research.

“Despite 44 years of independence, the military remains a cornerstone of power in Zimbabwe, as seen during the 2017 coup against Mugabe. The next leader will need strong military connections to succeed in a party lacking a structured leadership succession plan.

“The military’s influence is profound and enduring, shaping both Zanu PF and the broader political landscape. Addressing these dynamics is crucial for Zimbabwe’s path to democratic governance and upholding constitutional principles.”

Luanshya gym instructor catches wife having quickie in bar toilet, beats her to death

THE aftermath of a quick sexual encounter has completely separated a couple in Luanshya district on the Copperbelt, as one was left dead, while her husband is headed for a possible life imprisonment.

This is the story of Mwika Chilaisha, 45 who works as a stores personnel at Zambia Combined Cadet Force and his wife, Lunar Kalaba aged 35, a couple that jointly owned a bar called ‘Paka Dry’ in Mpatamatu area.

Yesterday, Chilaisha took over the duties of his bartender, after which he went to demand money from a customer who consumed his beers on credit.

Between 16:00 hours to 17:00 hours, his wife, passed through the bar and asked him for a K5 which he refused to give her, and she left in rage.

At 19:30 hours, the regular barman returned and resumed his work, allowing Chishaila to leave for his home, unbeknownst to him that his wife was still in the precinct of their business premises.

Kalaba upon leaving in rage met a buyer Nathan Simukoko outside the bar, who showered her with more money than the k5 she had been pestering her husband for, and the two ended up at Simukoko’s home around midnight for a sexual escape.

Kalaba did not return home on time, forcing her husband to follow her at the bar.

When being interrogated by her husband on why she took up such an adulterous step, Kalaba said, Simukoko had asked her to get fish from his home which he had kept in the fridge for the couple to which complied, but after some time, she left with him again.

As if coming home late was not enough Chilaisha caught his wife in the early hours of today, at 01:30 hours, doing some extra work for the bar by offering intensive and pleasurable customer care services to Simukoko in the toilet, after being led by some sensual whimper from his wife and groans of her lover when he got to the bar.

Chilaisha is reported to have found his soulmate and business partner half naked with Simukoko in the toilet whom he suspected was from drying up his wife’s honey pot after emptying all the Mosi bottles in their bar.

Agitated by his discovery, Chilaisha forgot the business principle of ‘a customer is always right’ and began to unleash gym punches at both his wife and her favourite client.

Luckily for the sinning customer, he managed to escape Chialaisha’s wrath, leaving his wife facing the deadly punches alone.

Mascular Chilaisha beat his wife until she was unconscious and unable to defend herself. She was rushed to the clinic by the bar man.

Kalaba’s brother later reported the matter to the police.

Copperbelt police commanding officer, Peacewell Mweemba confirmed the incident and arrest of Chilaisha.

“Upon being taken to the clinic by the bar man, the victim was pronounced as a brought in dead (BID),” shared Mweemba.

Thabo Mbeki has advised current African presidents to emulate the relationship between Nigeria and South African musicians

Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki has advised current African presidents to emulate the impressive relationship between Nigeria and South African musicians.

Mbeki said the African artists have managed to forge a formidable relationship and strong collaborative strategies which has seen them popularise both countries’ entertainment sectors and create wealth for the industry’s participants but the political leaders in Africa are locked in baseless egocentrism and territorialism which prevents generation of wealth amongst African countries.

Mbeki said before now that Africa used to be feared due to a strong pan-Africanism consciousness among leaders and deliberate policy formulations directed towards giving it a force of power.

He, however, regretted that today’s leaders lack such political will, are more Eurocentric and lack clear direction on how Africa should remain a liberated continent.

“Political will to manage diversity is central to the survival of all of the African states because there’s no African state which is not characterized by the diversity of its population now,” Mbeki said at his Thabo Mbeki Foundation premises, Johannesburg while hosting the third cohort of the MTN-MIP Fellows

“And so if you want to keep a continent or a country together, there’s got to be a conscious political decision. There is one outstanding example in this regard – Tanzania.

“When Tanzania was known as Tanganyika, there were two very important decisions under Julius Nyerere to keep the whole country together. One of them was to have one central language.

“Nyerere decided that everybody must speak Swahili and abandon tribal or regional languages. So, everybody speaks Swahili. The second decision was the abolition of the institution of chieftaincy ship. So there’s no chief of this tribe or that tribe.

“These were conscious decisions taken by the political leadership. They wanted to build one nation out of the Tanganyikans, and it’s worked.

“So because the people of Tanzania have gotten used to being one, even some few years back when some political people, in Tanzania, started resurrecting this matter about tribal identity in order to advance their own political futures, the consciousness one united Tanzania, was strong enough to defeat them.

“So, that’s why I’m saying it’s a political decision here. South Africa is very fortunate in that respect, because you know, the diamond mines, which were first discovered in the 19th century, attracted people from Southern Africa, from as far as Angola among others to South Africa.

“Then a bit later, gold mining came and domestically, there was a lot of movement of people, and social economic development. Recall that at the formation of the African National Congress in 1912, one of its principal slogans was to bury the demon of tribalism.

“So since the beginning of the 20th century, you’ve had a political organization whose task was to make sure that all of this algorithm come together so that you see you got to a point before liberation here, if you said in 1960 to the African community here, wherever you are in the country, you say, who’s your national leader? They would say Alberto.

“So, what has happened on the continent is a regression from the kind of pan-Africanist commitment that we had with other earlier leaders on the continent, and the weakening of that resolve has negative consequences like the frosty relationship between South Africa and Nigeria. Another is the poor Visa regulation which has made it very difficult for cross border trade.

“And, now addressing the challenge is to address the larger political problems. The point is always being made about the relationship between the artists, Nigerian, South African artists, and what they are able to do,” he added.

Unveiling Belgium’s dark past: The shameful ‘Human Zoo’ of King Leopold II’s colonial era

0

The mistreatment of Africans in Belgium’s “human zoos” has been brought to light by a historian. In these degrading exhibits, people were treated like animals by cruel and racist handlers.

Guido Gryseels, former director of the Africa Museum—where King Leopold II once opened one such exhibit—told The Sun that Belgium still needs to reckon with its brutal colonial history.

Disturbing images show Congolese men, women, and children displayed in mock villages, ogled by tourists and locals from behind bamboo fences.

In 1958, Belgium showcased its post-war social, cultural, and technological advancements through a world fair. One exhibit featured a live display of Congolese people in a fabricated village.

Photographs of men, women, and children standing near straw huts in so-called “traditional” attire, in an inhumane and demeaning setting, have surfaced. In one particularly shocking image, a little girl stands in a pen, while visitors gawk through a bamboo fence and someone offers her food. Onlookers laughed, heckled, and reportedly even threw bananas at the villagers.

Unveiling Belgium’s dark past: The shameful ‘Human Zoo’ of King Leopold II’s colonial era

This exhibit, believed to be the world’s last human zoo, took place just 66 years ago.

Prior to the 1958 world fair, King Leopold II ordered a similarly cruel human zoo to be staged in 1897 on the grounds of what is now the Africa Museum. A fake village was erected, leading to the deaths of seven Congolese people due to harsh conditions.

Gryseels, who still serves on the museum’s board, said the museum has since confronted its colonial past and undergone significant changes. Reflecting on the 1958 human zoo, which was separate from the Africa Museum, Gryseels said: “The Congolese staff felt very humiliated because people were throwing bananas and treating them as though they were wild animals. Many of them left, resigned, and returned to Congo.”

He added: “It was a propaganda tool filled with stereotypes, portraying Africans as uncivilized and promoting the false narrative that Belgium brought ‘civilization’ to Congo.”

Belgium and Congo’s Colonial History

The Democratic Republic of Congo was under Belgian rule from 1908 to 1960, but the exploitation began earlier. In 1885, King Leopold II seized control of Congo, establishing an infamously violent regime responsible for millions of deaths. Some estimates suggest around 10 million Africans were killed during his reign, though the exact figure is disputed by historians.

Congolese people were forcibly brought to Belgium and displayed in these fake villages or “human zoos.” According to Britannica, Belgium’s colonial policy was based on “paternalism,” treating Africans as if they were children in need of guidance and control.

King Leopold II, who died in 1909, is remembered for his brutal colonization of Congo. However, after World War I, statues of him were erected to bolster national pride, whitewashing the atrocities committed under his rule. This dark history went largely unacknowledged until the 21st century.

The Africa Museum, once a tool of colonial propaganda, has evolved into a space that confronts this painful past. Gryseels explained: “King Leopold II opened the museum as a propaganda instrument and brought 236 Congolese people to Belgium to set up villages near the museum.”

In 1897, during one of the museum’s human zoos, some Congolese participants tragically died from pneumonia and influenza after being forced to stand in the cold, exposed to gawking visitors.

Compiled by Henry Holloway, here are key points about King Leopold II:

Leopold II ruled Belgium from 1865 to 1909 and was the longest-reigning monarch in its history. His legacy, however, is stained by the atrocities committed during his personal colonial project in the Congo, where his regime exploited the region’s resources—especially rubber and ivory—amassing vast wealth while subjecting the local population to forced labor, savage punishments, and widespread abuse.

Millions perished under his reign of terror. Outrage over the abuses eventually led to international condemnation, forcing Leopold to relinquish control of the Congo Free State a year before his death in 1909.

Gryseels noted that human zoos were common across Europe, Asia, and America at the time. “About a million people visited the 1897 human zoo,” he said.

He expressed pride in his efforts to transform the museum from a colonial institution into one that exposes the grim realities of Belgium’s past. Gryseels believes the museum now plays a key role in the fight against racism. “When I became director, about 95% of Belgians still believed that colonialism was a good thing for Congo. Now, recent research shows less than a quarter of the population holds that view.”

Gryseels concluded by saying the museum’s transformation is helping to “decolonize minds in Belgium” and that it now highlights the rich cultures of Africa while also explaining the moral wrongs of colonialism.
