“We Feel Lonely”: Social Media Erupts as Mnangagwa Complains to Putin About US Influence in Zambia

Social Media Erupts as Mnangagwa Complains to Putin About US Influence in Zambia

A video of President Emmerson Mnangagwa voicing concerns about Western favouritism towards Zambia and Malawi during his brief meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has sparked controversy on social media.

In the meeting, Mnangagwa told Putin that the United States is strengthening its military presence in Zambia.

Mnangagwa Complains to Putin About Zambia

During Thursday’s discussion, President Mnangagwa sought assistance for “defence and food security,” expressing worries about US influence in Zambia. He claimed the United States is “consolidating its power” there through increased security and financial aid, suggesting this aims to isolate Zimbabwe.

“You see, the West has just begun consolidating its power in Zambia, our next neighbour. You know, there was a time when Zambia and Zimbabwe were one; it was called Northern and Southern Rhodesia. It was made one by the British, but they are now separate. And the Americans are consolidating their power in that country, both in terms of security and in terms of financial support to Zambia to make sure that we feel lonely. But that will not change us, because we have taken a course as a people that we feel we want to be independent and we will choose our friends ourselves. And besides, we are independent today because most of us in the leadership trained here during our war of liberation. We got our independence because we are supported by yourselves here, and we don’t forget that history, and you don’t forget about us,” President Mnangagwa told Putin.

Social Media Reacts to Video

His remarks quickly sparked debate on social media. Some users criticised Mnangagwa for complaining about a neighbouring Southern African country to Russia, while others felt he was justified. Here are some reactions:

@zizirealestate:

You make him sound like a little boy complaining to his father about how the other boys are being preferred over him & how this is so unfair. He was just airing his views to a fellow head of state and trying to build good relations, that’s all. Don’t make him sound so weak😭

@jimu_stan74832:

As long we beg from this Whites either east or west We Africans will never be treated as equals.High time Africans must unite and stand up and fight not Against each other but for each other

@ricoricardm:

I thought you are joking! Really this guy said that to Putin. Very embarrassing coming from the head of state. He can just beg without badmouthing neighbours.

NAWA CONCLUDES KEY CAMPAIGN VISIT TO TÜRKİYE

Deputy Commissioner of Police and Africa’s candidate for INTERPOL Secretary General, Mubita Nawa, has concluded his significant campaign visit to Türkiye, marking a milestone in his journey towards this prestigious international position.

While in Türkiye, Mr. Nawa engaged in productive discussions with key officials from the Turkish government and law enforcement agencies.

Notable meetings included a session with Müslüm Aygün, Deputy Director for International Cooperation at Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Associate Prof. Mustafa Çalışkan, Deputy General Director of the Turkish National Police and 1st Degree Chief Superintendent.

“They reaffirmed the importance of international collaboration in tackling global security challenges,” he stated.

He elaborated on his vision for INTERPOL, emphasizing the need for more coherent regional policies that effectively serve all parts of the world.

A key aspect of these discussions was Türkiye’s support for his candidacy, which has been endorsed by the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government as well as the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Mr. Nawa described these meetings as both enlightening and encouraging

“I’m grateful to Zambia’s Ambassador to Turkiye His Excellency Lt Gen (Dr) William Sikazwe (Rtd) and all his staff for facilitating our visit” he thanked.

Mr. Nawa’s visit highlighted the shared vision and strategic cooperation necessary to make INTERPOL a more inclusive, efficient, and impactful organization.

“My belief in the power of strategic cooperation has been reinforced,” he said.

“Together, we can make the world a safer place.”

This visit to Türkiye is a testament to Mr. Nawa’s commitment to his campaign and his dedication to enhancing global security through international collaboration.

He looks forward to continuing his journey and working closely with all member states to realize this vision.

The interviews for the Secretary General of the global police organisation are scheduled for June 25 2024, in Lyon, France.

Failed ‘coup plotters’ go on trial in DR Congo

The trial of 51 individuals, including three Americans, accused of attempting to overthrow the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo last month, has begun.

The hearing is being broadcast live on national TV and radio from N’dolo military prison in the capital, Kinshasa.

The defendants were ushered into the military court wearing blue-and-yellow shirts, marking their first appearance in public since the failed coup.

Arrested during attacks on the presidential palace and the home of an ally of President Félix Tshisekedi, they face multiple charges, including financing terrorism, murder, and attempted assassination.

They have not yet been asked to plead in the case, which is being held under a marquee on the grounds of the jail.

The US State Department says it has not been given access to its citizens in custody.

Six people were killed during the attempted coup on 19 May, including the suspected leader of the plot Christian Malanga.

The rest of the defendants were detained after the attack on the Palais de la Nation and the home of Vital Kamerhe, who is the parliamentary speaker.

Local media reports said the assailants were members of the New Zaire Movement linked to Malanga, a formerly exiled DR Congo politician who had acquired US citizenship.

His son Marcel Malanga is among the US nationals who were arrested.

Another is 21-year-old Tyler Thompson, whose family told the BBC this week they had “zero idea” how he had become entangled in the plan.

Videos taken in Kinshasa after the incident show Mr Thompson being hit with the butt of a rifle and repeatedly struck in the head by Congolese security forces.
Other individuals of different nationalities were also involved and are on trial, according to army spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge.

One is a Congolese man who holds Belgian nationality and there is also a Canadian citizen originally from DR Congo.

According to the AFP news agency, there is also an investigation into the conduct of the soldiers who foiled the coup for allegedly committing executions after the operation.

President Tshisekedi was re-elected for a second term in disputed elections last year in December. He won about 78% of the vote.

Nearly 20 people were killed in election-related violence in the run-up to the vote.

DR Congo is a country with vast mineral wealth and a huge population, but despite this, life has not improved for most people, with conflict, corruption and poor governance persisting.

Much of the country’s natural resources lie in the east where violence still rages despite Mr Tshisekedi’s attempts to deal with the situation by imposing a state of siege, ceasefire deals, and bringing in regional troops.

Idris Elba’s latest project covers untold stories of WWII veterans of colour like his own grandfather

Idris Elba has said that his latest project was inspired by his familial ties with World War II. According to him, his grandfather played a significant role in the war before moving from Kansas City to West Africa, as reported by ABC.

This informed the project for National Geographic titled “Erased: World War II’s Heroes of Color”, which Elba narrated and executive-produced. In an interview with ABC7 Los Angeles anchor Leslie Sykes, Elba shared his connection to the project and why it was important to shed light on overlooked heroes.

“The telling of World War II stories has been told in many, many versions, good documentaries, great films. But there is a component of most of these films that have been erased, eradicated, and not told fully which is the involvement of Black and Brown people from all over the globe that were significantly important to WWII,” said Elba.

“For me, it was really important to give an opportunity to picture this history from people that the families, some of the testimony from the soldiers that were there.”

He explained to People that the project touched his heart, particularly during the voiceover moments.

“I just would suppress them because this is not about me, but man, I was like, I dunno, that could be my granddad in the back there, you know?” he said. “I dunno. It was like he was six foot seven, so I was scanning for the tall guys.”

For his mom, who was 10 when her father died, her memories are “filled with melancholy.”

“There’s so much history about my grandfather that she doesn’t know because she only knew him for a short time,” Elba said.

Director Shianne Brown was the director of the episode about D-day.

“I think it’s such an iconic battle that was a seminal moment in the war and obviously we’re coming to the 80th anniversary,” said Brown. “What I learned is a lot of the Black soldiers weren’t believed after they came back and said they were fighting in the war. I think it’s important to shine the light on those Black and Brown stories which haven’t been explored.”

“I think what we’re going to see is really moving, incredible accounts of some of the most incredible battles we’ve known and seen, but we just haven’t seen it from this perspective,” said Elba.

“Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color” premiered on June 3 on National Geographic and started streaming the next day on Hulu.

Howard University strips Diddy of honorary degree after ‘violent’ leaked CCTV tape

The board of Howard University, a historically-black university in Washington DC, has moved to strip Sean “Diddy” Combs of his honourary degree

The announcement comes after CNN published a CCTV video of the hip-hop producer hitting an ex-girlfriend in a hotel hallway.

In a statement on Friday, the university said his “behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”

The rapper apologised after the video was released last month for the attack on singer Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura.

“I was disgusted when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” Mr Combs said in his statement.

“I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry.”

Howard University conferred the degree on Mr Combs in 2014. It said in its statement that it would also end a scholarship in his name and terminate a 2016 “gift agreement” with the rapper.

That agreement was a $1m (£785,000) donation that he made through his foundation.

The Sean Combs Foundation did not respond to a request for comment.

The university’s statement said Mr Combs’ name would be removed from all documents listing honourary degree recipients.

“The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence,” the statement said.

Four women, including his former long-time partner Ms Ventura, have filed lawsuits against the musician, accusing him of sexual and physical abuse.

Ms Ventura’s lawsuit was settled in November, and Mr Combs has denied all sexual assault allegations.

In a statement issued last December, Mr Combs defended himself against what he described as “sickening allegations” made by “individuals looking for a quick payday”.

“Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged,” he said, adding he would fight to clear his name.

In March, federal agents raided two houses owned by the star “as part of an ongoing investigation” into sex trafficking.

His lawyer called the action an “unprecedented ambush” and a “gross overuse of military-level force”, and maintained his client’s innocence.

‘Dictator’ Eto’o and chaos in Cameroonian football

For a proud country which boasts five continental titles and the most World Cup finals appearances by an African nation, the past two months have seen a very public row play out over who should coach the Indomitable Lions.

Last week Belgian Marc Brys was removed as boss – only to be reappointed within 48 hours.

But the sideshow off the pitch ahead of crunch 2026 World Cup qualifiers is only the tip of the iceberg in a battle for control of the game.

The man now running football in the Central African nation is former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto’o, a legend of the game on the continent and Cameroon’s record goalscorer, who was elected football federation (Fecafoot) president in December 2021.

But Eto’o has been described as a “dictator” by one former international team-mate because of the way he is steering the organisation – epitomised by the spat with the nation’s Ministry of Sport (Minsep) over Brys.

“Samuel was the biggest player in Africa but there’s a lot of trouble around him,” the retired player, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of a backlash, told BBC Sport Africa.

“He does not listen to advice. When you manage people you do not need to [act] like a dictator.

“I didn’t know he would be like that, and it will be hard for him to continue.”

Players have issued a plea for the team to be kept “politically free” but some fans have become so desperate that they have called on world governing body Fifa to suspend Cameroon.

The curious case of Marc Brys

The arrival of Brys as coach in April, after the departure of Rigobert Song following a last-16 exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), created a storm few would have expected.

Fecafoot expressed its “great surprise” when Minsep announced the appointment of the 62-year-old whose coaching career has been with clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.

Eto’o’s alternative list of high-profile candidates had reportedly included two-time Afcon-winning coach Herve Renard, Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro and ex-Nigeria boss Jose Peserio.

“The only problem was the salaries,” Cameroonian sports journalist Giovanni Wanneh told BBC Sport Africa.

“Brys is not the best, but we’re not talking about someone we picked from the gutters. Minsep has played this card before and it worked out fine for Cameroon.”

In Cameroon, as is the case in several other African countries, the government pays the salaries of the national team’s coaching staff and feels entitled to weigh into Fecafoot’s affairs.

Eto’o did not turn up to the presentation where Brys signed his contract on 8 April, and their first in-person meeting on 28 May quickly descended into an unseemly row.

Fecafoot reacted by replacing Brys with an interim coach, only to quickly backtrack after pressure was applied by Minsep.

Yet a tense atmosphere continued this week when the Indomitable Lions squad assembled in Yaounde ahead of the visit of Cape Verde in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.

Players were met by two different sets of administrators at the team hotel, and Fecafoot did not provide kit for the first training session due to be held by Brys – leading forward Moumi Ngamaleu to call for unity.

“The responsibility is for you to help keep the team politically free and to maintain a clean environment for us to perform without problems,” his Instagram message read.

“We hereby approach you to overcome the differences, put the ego aside and remember we are all here to put the people of Cameroon on the map and give them honour.”

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was among several players who reposted Ngamaleu’s message.

A senior Confederation of African Football (Caf) official said it is open to mediating in the row between Fecafoot and Minsep, although such a request is yet to be received.

‘Grave irregularities’ under Eto’o
Eto’o’s treatment of Brys is only the latest instance of his behaviour garnering negative attention since he assumed control of Fecafoot.

“The fact that you are a top footballer doesn’t automatically make you a great administrator,” said Wanneh.

“When he came in, I thought he was going to change the narrative in our football. But Cameroon football is living its worst moment.”

In July last year, a group representing amateur clubs in Cameroon called on the 43-year-old to resign, citing “grave irregularities” in the organisation.

That included Eto’o taking an ambassadorial role with a sports betting company – potentially in violation of both Fifa and Fecafoot rules.

Moreover, an investigation by Caf into allegations of improper conduct against Eto’o is ongoing.

“He is the legitimate president of the federation. But nobody is above the law,” Caf secretary general Veron Mosengo-Omba told BBC Sport Africa.

A battle for control

In Cameroonian sport, the influence of President Paul Biya has been keenly felt in the past.

He insisted on Roger Milla being included in the squad for the 1990 World Cup – with the then-38-year-old netting four times – while the appointment of Brys’ predecessor Rigobert Song in 2022 was made “on very high instructions” of President Biya.

It is the government financing and pumping in the money,” said Wanneh.

“Fecafoot is not structured in a way that it can cater for its burden and expenditure,” the journalist added. “If it was then we would not have this scenario.”

Countries whose governments interfere in footballing affairs are at risk of suspension by Fifa – a fate that has befallen many African nations in the past, including Cameroon – yet Minsep has so far trodden a path which has not provoked the Zurich-based governing body.

While Fifa’s social media channels have been bombarded by messages to take action, Eto’o retains the backing of many Indomitable Lions supporters in his bid to break free of perceived governmental control.

Town to pay $100,000 after teacher plays Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Alright’ in class

After a student allegedly experienced trauma in one of his classes, a Connecticut town agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a lawsuit. The lawsuit, which was first filed in 2022 concerning the alleged incident in 2020, contends that a Vernon Center Middle School eighth-grade social studies teacher showed his class a documentary titled “Hip Hop: Songs that Shook America,” which included the song “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar.

As reported by the New Haven Register, the lawsuit alleges that the instructor was aware that one of his students had an individualized education plan, was diagnosed with a learning impairment, and was the son of a police officer. It further claims that “the video depicted officers as murderers and contained other shockingly violent scenes and controversial statements about police officers.”

Toward the end of the full version of the “Alright” music video, a man dressed as a police officer can be seen making a finger gun motion and shooting at Lamar, who is perched atop a light pole, according to the publication. He falls from the fixture, and the black-and-white image shows blood oozing out of him.

According to the lawsuit, the student suffered emotional and psychological injuries and distress as a result of being shown the video, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, shock, confusion, sadness, feeling unsafe, and social withdrawal, all of which require psychological treatment and counseling and, if untreated, pose the risk of severe mental illness.

The student is also alleged to have experienced headaches, nausea, and malaise in addition to being stigmatized for being the child of a police officer, which led to friends and others shunning him, as per the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, this led to the child switching schools, “as a result of which he has suffered loss and damages.”

Except for Councilman Michael Wendus, Town Council members unanimously accepted the settlement on Tuesday.

The Board of Education is expected to complete the settlement at its meeting on Monday. Speaking on behalf of the district, Superintendent Joseph Macary stated that the settlement will address two legal matters: the lawsuit and a special education due process case. The money will be given to the family to “recoup tuition costs after the student was transferred to another school that can meet his needs.”

Macary said, “We always do what’s in the best interest of students, and each student is different so each decision is different, but it’s always what’s best for the kids.”

His record shows that the teacher in the Lamar incident received a verbal warning after parents complained that the material was inappropriate for eighth-grade students and that he should obtain administration approval and signed permission slips from parents if the material is potentially controversial.

Records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request suggest that the teacher had previously received criticism for the movies he chose to assign or show his students.

In 2006, he was also chastised, according to municipal records, for requiring students to view the R-rated film “Amistad” for extra credit.

Kagame critic barred from Rwanda’s presidential race

Diane Rwigara, an outspoken critic of Rwandan Kagame, has been barred from standing in next month’s presidential election.

Only Mr Kagame and two other politicians – Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent Philippe Mpayimana – were cleared by the electoral body.

Ms Rwigara, who was also disqualified from the 2017 poll, took to X, formerly Twitter, to express her disappointment to Mr Kagame.

“Why won’t you let me run? This is the second time you [have] cheat[ed] me out of my right to campaign,” she said.

The 42-year-old, who is the leader of the People Salvation Movement (PSM), had earlier told the BBC’s Newsday programme that she had hoped to be able to stand this time round.

“I’m representing the vast majority of Rwandans who live in fear and are not allowed to be free in their own country,” she said.

“Rwanda is portrayed as a country where the economy has been growing. But on the ground, it’s different. People do lack the basics of life, food, water, shelter.”

But on issuing its provisional list of candidates, the electoral commission said Ms Rwigara had failed to provide the correct documentation to show she had no criminal record.

It also said she had failed to show she had enough support nationwide to stand.
“On the requirement for 600 signature endorsements, she did not provide at least 12 signatures from eight districts,” Oda Gasinzigwa, the electoral commission chief, was quoted as saying.

Another reason the commission gave was that Ms Rwigara had failed to prove she was Rwandan by birth. She once held Belgian citizenship but surrendered that in 2017 before her last bid to become a candidate.

But Ms Rwigara has told the BBC that she was born in Rwanda and dismissed all the other grounds for the rejection of her candidacy.

A total of nine applications to stand for president were received by Rwanda’s National Electoral Commission. Their final list will be announced next Friday as it still considering appeals lodged earlier in the process – though at this stage it is too late for the PSM leader to appeal.

In 2017 she was barred following accusations of forging the signatures of supporters for her application.

Ms Rwigara was imprisoned for more than a year but acquitted in 2018 over charges of inciting insurrection and forgery. She said the charges were politically motivated.

In March, a Rwandan court blocked efforts by prominent opposition figure Victoire Ingabire to lift a ban on her running in the presidential election.
She was freed in 2018 after spending eight years in prison for threatening state security and “belittling” the 1994 genocide.

In Rwanda, people who have been jailed for more than six months are barred from running in elections.

The two cleared candidates – Mr. Habineza and Mr. Mpayimana – were also the only candidates approved to stand against Mr. Kagame in the 2017 election.
Mr Kagame is running for a fourth term, which could extend his presidency to nearly three decades should he win.

He won the last presidential election in 2017 with nearly 99% of the vote.
The 66-year-old president has faced criticism from rights groups for cracking down on the opposition.

But he has always fiercely defended Rwanda’s record on human rights, saying his country respects political freedoms.

President Museveni busts budget corruption syndicate

Top Finance ministry technocrats could soon be in trouble after President Museveni revealed that he has evidence pinning them of colluding with accounting officers and parliamentarians to pilfer public resources through fictitious allocations in the national budget.

Delivering the State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala yesterday, Mr Museveni said “I have been hearing stories that there is a racket from … [the] Ministry of Finance, they are bringing accounting officers of ministries to come to Parliament working with some people, to provide certain funds, provided they [officials] take a share”.

“I didn’t believe it [at first], but now I have proof. So, therefore, really the corrupt are like foreigners [because] some of these foreigners do not know Uganda,” he said, “I am very sorry for them because they do not know what they are doing. I pity those people who support them [because] they don’t know how strong we are.”

The revelations lift the lid off years of investigations by intelligence agencies, including the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), which in dossiers prepared for the President reported alleged clandestine practice of some lawmakers taking money in exchange for heftier budget allocations to ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

Sources close to the inquiries in earlier briefings to this newspaper said that implicated lawmakers call the extortion game “kicking the ball to the wall”, euphemism for kickback likened to a bounce of a ball to the kicker if booted against a barrier.

Accounting officers – permanent secretaries or under-secretaries, chief executive officers and chief administrative officers – who “know how to kick the ball” receive generous budgetary allocations to their entities and muted questioning when before House accountability committees, the source said.

This alleged budget corruption, according to another source, is the reason the President asked Members of Parliament to stop altering the budget and only make recommendations to the budget, which he said was his.

Some lawmakers upset over the comments pushed back, arguing that their role in the budget process was more than ceremonial.

Despite receiving the dossiers years ago, President Museveni reserved any public comments on the findings, and reportedly commissioned counter-intelligence to verify the claims.

State House sources said it is the latter findings, which corroborated the initial account, which prompted the disclosure by the head of state at yesterday’s SONA.

Uganda’s budget has been increasing exponentially, with substantial last-minute additions through corrigenda or supplementary allocations which MPs question but approve.

For instance, Parliament despite complaining that Finance ministry ambushed it at the eleventh hour with a revised budget went ahead and approved Shs72 trillion for the next Financial Year, which starts on July 1, up from the Shs52 trillion for the ending Financial Year.

The Executive and Legislature have repeatedly crossed swords over the national budget. The President accuses lawmakers of applying public money to wasteful consumptive expenditures such as travel and workshops while MPs say the Executive, particularly State House, takes a disproportionate share of the national cake mainly through supplementary requests at the expense of service delivery to the masses.

Mr Henry Musasizi, the State minister for Finance (General Duties), in a rejoinder last evening agreed with the President, his appointing authority, that something was amiss with the work methods of technocrats at Finance.

“We have been sitting in Cabinet [to] approve a budget, harmonise with other arms of government and now you hear an accounting officer going to Parliament asking for more money which is not what we agreed upon [and] I think that is the genesis of the whole matter,” he said in reference to the alleged budget corruption.

He added: “I am happy that [the] President has today come out strongly to condemn this practice and informed us that he has evidence and will crush them because I am sure he knows the people behind it.”

Asked if some legislators connive with accounting officer and Finance officials to take money for themselves when processing the budget, Parliament Spokesman Chris Obore said: “The President of Uganda has better intelligence than anyone else in Uganda. If that has been happening, it is best for those who have been doing it to immediately stop.”

Mr Museveni’s proposal for dialogue for possible amnesty for the budget thieves was met with noisy disapproval by MPs assembled in an overcast afternoon in Kololo. “You want blood,” he asked, meaning action.

“Yes”, they roared back, with Aringa South MP Sunday Odria who, alongside Lwemiyaga counterpart Theodore Ssekikubo, is spearheading planned censure of five parliamentary commissioners for gifting themselves Shs1.7 billion in “service awards’’, on his feet while clapping.

In yesterday’s address, President Museveni said budget corruption is birthed by “dishonesty” and “unforgivable” while individuals involved in graft by “mistake” require counselling to be aligned to the correct path of ethical public service.

Four Israeli Hostages Rescued from Gaza in Daring Joint Operation by IDF, Shin Bet, and Israel Police

In a dramatic and daring joint operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Shin Bet security service, and the Israel Police successfully rescued four Israeli hostages from Gaza.

The hostages, identified as Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv, were kidnapped by the Hamas terrorist organization during the ‘Nova’ music festival on October 7th.

The hostages, who had been held captive for months, were rescued from two separate locations in Nuseirat in a complex and special daytime operation.

The IDF, Shin Bet, and Israel Police forces coordinated their efforts to carry out the rescue mission, which was planned meticulously over several weeks.

According to reports, the hostages were guarded by a large force of terrorists, making the operation even more challenging.

The Palestinian sources reported heavy casualties from cover fire and diversionary attacks during the operation.

Unfortunately, one Israeli soldier was seriously wounded in the attack and was rushed to the hospital for life-saving treatment.

Despite the risks involved, the security forces pressed on with the operation, determined to bring the hostages home safely.

The IDF confirmed that the hostages were in good medical condition and were transferred to the Sheba Tel-HaShomer Medical Center for further examinations.

President Isaac Herzog personally contacted the hostages upon their return to Israel, expressing his joy and relief at their safe rescue.

Speaking to Noa Argamani, Herzog conveyed his emotions, saying, “Noa, I am so excited to hear your voice, it just brings tears to my eyes. I hug you in the name of all the people of Israel.”

The successful rescue operation was a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the IDF, Shin Bet, and Israel Police forces.

Their coordinated efforts and meticulous planning ensured the safe return of the Israeli hostages from Gaza.

The global community has also expressed relief and support for the rescued hostages, emphasizing the importance of securing the safe return of all captives.

The two-state solution, which is widely supported internationally, remains a crucial aspect of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ensuring lasting peace in the region.

As the rescued hostages begin their journey of recovery and rehabilitation, the Israeli security forces remain vigilant in their efforts to bring all captives home safely.

The operation serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by those who serve in defense of their country and the sacrifices they make to protect their fellow citizens.

The successful rescue of the four Israeli hostages from Gaza highlights the courage and determination of the IDF, Shin Bet, and Israel Police forces.

Their coordinated efforts and unwavering commitment to protecting Israeli citizens have once again demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity and secure the safe return of captives. The rescued hostages can now begin the process of healing and reintegration into society, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of the security forces involved in the operation

The Dallas Mavericks is the only NBA team with a Black CEO and GM

The Dallas Mavericks is the only NBA team with a Black CEO and GM, showing its commitment to diversity and inclusion in its leadership. In 2023, over 92 percent of the team presidents within the NBA were white, while 7.9 percent were African American, according to Statista.

The Mavericks is making history and led by Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, the league’s first Black woman CEO, and Nice Harrison, a trailblazer as the team’s general manager. Marshall was hired by owner, Mark Cuban, in 2018, making her the first Black female CEO to lead an NBA team.

Marshall told Time that she didn’t even know the job existed. In fact, she did not even know who Cuban was when he called to offer her the job. After that surprising call from the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, she responded to his request and set out a 100-day plan to run and rejuvenate the establishment. She wanted to diversify the team and make some leadership changes and disclosed that it was tough to learn and integrate with everything because certain standards had been set that she had to change – the season was also underway.

She used her experience in leading people to change the status quo, and with the help of people like her boss, colleagues, people in the leagues, and others, she finally grasped the basketball business.

However, the Dallas Mavericks CEO once had to battle stage 3 colon cancer at age 51. She disclosed to PBS that when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, she described it as a setup. When Marshall told her mother about the cancer diagnosis, her mother told her it was for God’s glory. She stood by her faith and her mother’s, and years later, she remains cancer-free.

Before taking on her role as CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, she had worked at AT&T for 36 years. While climbing the corporate ladder, she faced pressure from some female bosses who advised her to change her appearance and name to find success. After years of allowing their words and thoughts to influence her, she decided to stick to her uniqueness.

Harrison, on the other hand, was hired in 2021 as the team’s general manager. Before his current role, he was an executive at Nike, spending 19 years at the company and recently serving as vice president of North America sports marketing. He also played professional basketball in Belgium.

“I am incredibly grateful to (Patrick Dumont) and the entire Dumont and Adelson family [team owners) for their continued trust and confidence and to Mark [Cuban] for his willingness to hire an unconventional candidate,” Harrison stated in a press release. “Patrick and his family have accepted me as their own from day one, and I am honored to work alongside them, as well as [Coach] Jason Kidd, as we continue to build a winning culture in Dallas.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attacked by a man in central Copenhagen

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man in central Copenhagen, her office has said.

The 46-year-old was “shocked by the incident” on Friday evening, July 7 in the capital’s Kultorvet square, the office said in a statement, without providing further details.

“Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was hit by a man Friday evening on Kultorvet in Copenhagen. The man was subsequently arrested,” the statement added, according to AFP news agency.

Copenhagen police also said on X that one person had been arrested and they were investigating the incident, but did not give details on the suspect’s identity.

The assault came two days before Danes head to the polls to vote in European Union parliamentary elections, which conclude across the EU bloc on Sunday.

Frederiksen has been campaigning with the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose.

Two witnesses, Marie Adrian and Anna Ravn, told newspaper BT that they had seen Frederiksen arrive at the square while they were sitting by a nearby fountain just before 6pm (16:00 GMT).

“A man came by in the opposite direction and gave her a hard shove on the shoulder, causing her to fall to the side,” the newspaper quoted the women as saying.

They added that while it was a “strong push”, Frederiksen did not hit the ground.

According to the witnesses, the prime minister then sat down at a nearby cafe. They described the man as tall and slim, and said he had tried to hurry away but had not gotten far before being grabbed and pushed to the ground by men in suits.

Another witness, Kasper Jorgensen, told newspaper Ekstra Bladet that he had seen the man after he was tackled to the ground, saying that one of what he presumed to be part of the security service had put a knee on the man’s back.

“They had pacified him, and as he lay there, he looked confused and a little dazed,” Jorgensen told the newspaper.

Frederiksen was then escorted away by security following the assault.

European Council President Charles Michel said he was “outraged by the assault” while European Parliament President Roberta Metsola urged Frederiksen to “keep strong” while adding in a post on X that “violence has no place in politics”.

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen also condemned what she called a “despicable act which goes against everything we believe and fight for in Europe”, in a statement to social media.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that “an attack on a democratically elected leader is also an attack on our democracy”.

In 2019, Frederiksen became Denmark’s youngest prime minister and kept the post after emerging victorious in the 2022 general election.

Our New Foreign Policy at Regional Level is a Threat to our Traditional Neighbors & Brotherly States – Chris Zumani

Our New Foreign Policy at Regional Level is a Threat to our Traditional Neighbors & Brotherly States.

1. ‘The Americans are consolidating their forces in Zambia for security purposes, we need your support from this threat’, Mnangagwa tells Putin yesterday in Russia

2. The presence of these American forces as reported here in Zambia is surely a big threat to our neighbors especially those who don’t agree with the West.

3. Since Lusaka has gone to kiss Washington in terms of security by giving them a ‘military base’, Harare is now gone to kiss Moscow to invite them put up a military base too.

4. This is what the Zimbabwean president is telling the Russian leader now. And this is not good for both Zambia, Zimbabwe and other African countries.

5. State sovereignty is the most important trait of a country anywhere-these developments directly undermine this principle.

6. These two countries were at some point one imperial state called Rhodesia-with one common liberation flag. Now, l see ‘arms race” between them!

7. During colonialism, the US never supported Zambia, Zimbabwe and other colonized nations, Washington supported European powers to continue enslaving Africa.

8. Only Russia and Cuba supported our struggles for liberation and invested in Africa to see freedom. Therefore, Russia is the only all weather friend!

9. With the path Zimbabwe is taking now, there is urgent need for President HH to engage his brother in Zimbabwe and assure him of continued peaceful coexistence and brotherhood.

10. And most importantly, HH must denounce and close this ‘American military base’ if any in Zambia without delay.

11. There is no neighboring state that will feel safe if Zambia supports Americans to put up a military base.

12. Latin America has a bad experience with these American military bases around them-HH must put national interest and state sovereignty first.

POLICE U-TURNS ON SP RALLY: POLICE STOP SOCIALIST PARTY MASS RALLY IN KITWE

POLICE STOP SOCIALIST PARTY MASS RALLY IN KITWE

Kitwe- Saturday,8th June 2024

Heavily armed Police officers in Kitwe in armoured and anti-riot gear, have surrounded Changanamai Grounds, where the Opposition Socialist Party is scheduled to hold its mass rally.

Earlier, Police had denied the Party from holding the public rally citing “security concerns”.

But last night, in a dramatic turn of events, the Police wrote fresh communication to the Party authorising them to proceed with the public rally.

Officer in Charge of Kitwe Police Station granted the authority and advised the Party to strengthen its internal security to help the Police marshal the rally.

Both Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe and Secretary General Dr. Cosmas Musumali, who have travelled for the public rally, confirmed the development and said they have now been informed that the rally will NO longer take place.

A check at Changanamai Grounds found the Police had cordoned and secured the area.

Lawyer, Simon Mulenga was found engaged in negotiations but the Police officers were adamant that the rally would not take place as they have been given fresh instructions from Lusaka to prevent and stop the rally.

Members of the Socialist Party and the public were seen trooping to the site of the long anticipated public rally.

Since August 2021, the Zambia Police have denied the Opposition to hold any public rally, procession or public meeting citing the security risks facing the country.

This has attracted attention with Human Rights Watch International decrying the shrinking democratic space and abuse of human rights that have emerged rapidly under President Hakainde Hichilema in Zambia.

Recently Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba claimed that his office CANNOT allow the Opposition to hold public meetings as they would face attacks from ruling UPND cadres.

Sakwiba Sikota give us the whole verbatim transcript of the JJ Banda interview instead of cherry-picking- SIKAILE SIKAILE

PROPAGANDA FOR A DEFENSE ATTORNEY

Warning ⚠️ Long article with serious matters. If your brain is too lazy to read, please skip and watch TikTok videos.

There is one interesting development in Honourable JJ Banda’s situation regarding the alleged abduction case.

This involves the antics of JJ Banda’s lawyer, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota SC, who is also the chairman of UKA. He has been using information he claims to have obtained from the investigation interview room for propaganda at the UKA campaign platforms.

Considering Mr. Sakwiba Sikota’s credentials as a senior counsel, he is well-qualified to know that his presence in the interview room is to ensure:

1.His client provides information freely and voluntarily.
2.His client is not coerced into giving incriminating information.
3. His client understand the consequences of having conflicting statements that may be used against the suspect and many others.

This is why in criminal law, an intelligent counsel will ask for a private conservation with a client to be told facts off cameras. A smart lawyer will ask the client did you kill or not? So that the lawyer finds the best options available for their client(s).

However, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota has decided to use information he claims to have obtained from the interview room for propaganda purposes. Where is counsel-client privilege senior counsel?

If what Mr. Sakwiba says is from the interview room, what would he do if next time he is barred from being present in the same interview room? This information is used to develop leads to cases and must not be divulged before police investigations end.

If UKA has decided to play politics with this investigation, so be it. If JJ Banda was sharp enough he would have actually put a restrained order to all UKA’s team to stop playing politics. But again he knows the objective of the script and he wants to emerge a hero I guess. I play he emerges as a successful one.

Fellow countrymen and women, I demand that the next set of interviews be done on live television so that the public can follow, as opposed to getting half-truths from a shameless defense attorney doing propaganda with his client’s freedom.

I wonder what type of lawyer Sakwiba Sikota is. An interview is a privileged undertaking whose objective is to focus on the victim’s statement and connect it to the evidence.

An interview is not just mere storytelling but involves giving accounts that can be connected to the evidence. For instance, you say something and point to where it can be found. After the interview, the police would go and connect the dots. If nothing is found based on what you said, they would call you back for another interview to explain why the things you mentioned were not found.

If you tell the police during the interview, for example, “I was at my second wife’s home,” the second wife will be interviewed to confirm that and state the time and reason you left. This is called following the leads.

Mr. Sikota talked about the “Zero Option.” For those who may not know, this was a group of terrorists who wanted to undermine FTJ’s government. It was the Zero Option and the Black Mambas. They were allegedly suspected of even planting bombs at the State House.

Mr. Sakwiba Sikota, give us the whole verbatim transcript of the JJ Banda interview instead of cherry-picking, sir.

He has actually ended up implicating other UKA individuals who bought into his screaming propaganda where he announced that three individuals were named: Levy Ngoma, Clayson Hamasaka, and Trevor Mwiinde. In his recent press conference, which I paid particular attention to, he avoided mentioning these three individuals at all costs, yet he told UKA and PF to spread lies against others. It is common sense that many who bought his unverified claims would be in trouble.

It is funny how Mr. Sakwiba is using emotions in such a high-profile and tricky case of his clients. In other contexts, one would claim he has sold out his client to the state by misleading his clients. How is selling the client to the state? By making it easier to investigate wings to find facts. But again, who is misleading whom here, JJ Banda or Sakwiba? Only time will tell.

For instance, Mr. JJ Banda must tell where he was at 01:00 and where he was going. He must explain his routine that made it so easy to track him. What about his constant communication with Hon. Binwell Mpundu? What were they talking about? At what point did he pick up the K60,000 and how long was it in his custody?

In the recent press conference, Mr. Sakwiba failed to maintain consistency by claiming the state focused on the note written, and he asked why the state was so interested in the note. But he forgets that it was actually UKA, led by the former president, who started everything and spread it to the general public, further mobilizing cadres to go and camp at Twin Palm police station, where the former president Mr. Edgar Lungu predicted and assured the JJ Banda family of the date he would reappear.

These are the issues Mr. Sakwiba Sikota must address.

The police told us that Mr. JJ Banda opted to remain silent. But his lawyer says he actually withdrew that right and spoke.

Let the top-notch lawyer tell us: what time did JJ Banda write his suicide note? Where did he keep the pen? Why did he want to kill himself? Why did he want us, the Zambian people, to forgive him? Was the place he left at 01:00 a man or a woman’s place? If it was a woman’s place, what was the reason for leaving at that time when he should have been preparing for a round of morning glory? Was he happy when he left the place at 01:00?

If this top-notch lawyer wants to address the police interview, let him respond to all those questions I have asked because the police asked them.

Zambia/Zimbabwe Crisis has been brewing for the last 3 years- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Zambia/Zimbabwe Crisis has been brewing for the last 3 years

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

At his inauguration on August 24th 2021,President Hakainde Hichilema invited, among others, members of the Opposition from the region to the ceremony.

He also invited Zimbabwe’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa.

Although this was a matter that could spark diplomatic concerns, it appeared to be a hang-over from Opposition politics and one could forgive President Hichilema for that.

But it was President Hichilema’s action to accept the United States AFRICA COMMAND (AFRICOM) to set up a presence in Zambia that raised serious concerns in Zambia and the region.

AFRICOM) is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Department of Defense, headquartered at Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany. It is responsible for U.S. military operations, including fighting regional conflicts and maintaining military relations with 53 African nations.

Both SADC and the African Union(AU) have advised member states NOT to accept the setting up of foreign military barracks, military bases or security offices from Superpowers as this will place and risk Africa to descend into superpowers proxy wars and military conflicts on the oils of Africa.

So global superpowers such as the USA, Russia, China, France and Britain must collaborate with member states through normal bilateral and diplomatic relations for their security cooperation.

Therefore this major and controversial decision in his foreign policy made by President Hichilema was done without consultation or approval of both his Cabinet nor Zambia’s Parliament.

Infact the decision was driven after Anglo-America’s Brenthurst Foundation convened a high-level security meeting-the African Security Dialogue held at First Quantum Mineral’s Royal Zambezi Lodge, which discussed the setting up of AFRICOM in Zambia.

Despite this decision having regional implications, President Hichilema glossed over it like a non-issue.

With DRC, Zambia and Zimbabwe having copper, cobalt, nickel and manganese which metals are critical with multiple applications from superalloys to batteries in computers and smart phones but are now most critically important in the global transition to a green economy due to their significance to batteries technology for electric vehicles and the electric vehicle industry, the to here countries have become the most important global states to guarantee energy security.

This is a sticky issue for Zimbabwe which leans more to China and Russia and suffers economic sanctions imposed by the USA and Britain, while Zambia and DRC signed agreements with the USA to dedicate supply and battery chain industries of copper and cobalt to the USA.

Further, matters between Zambia and Zimbabwe boiled over when President Hichilema, in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security appointed former Vice President, Dr. Nevers Mumba as Head of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission to the 2023 Harmonised Elections in Zimbabwe.

Mumba’s conduct and media utterances raised so much concerns as he appeared clearly a tool of what appeared to be regime change using the upcoming elections, an issue the ruling ZANUPF party has constantly accused the West.

At his inauguration, Mnangagwa invited SADC leaders including President Hichilema especially that he was Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics Defence and Security.

But Mnangagwa also invited former President, Edgar Lungu and leaders of the Patriotic Front and Socialist Party.

Hichilema skipped the invitation but delegated and sent his Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Stanley Kakubo.

The recent appeal by President Emerson Mnangagwa to Russia’s Vladimir Putin for security support and other cooperation, especially and in light of the support the USA Government, its allies and institutions are giving Zambia, appears to be legitimate, in the face of geopolitics and security threats playing out in the region.

This recent development has to be handled with diplomatic care as the tensions have been brewing for the last 3 years.

The SADC region is deemed as the most peaceful economic regional grouping with insecurity only occurring in Eastern DRC and recently in Mozambique’s where a terrorist group from IS-Mozambique (IS-M), with links to Daesh (formerly known as Islamic State) is mainly active in Cabo Delgado Province, and has previously carried out attacks in neighbouring districts of Niassa and Nampula Provinces.

Zambia is a beacon of peace in the region, a light and shining example to Africa.

Zambia’s founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda ran a non-aligned foreign policy but in helping achieve liberation for Southern Africa states including Zimbabwe, he relied upon China, USSR and Cuba as the West supported, openly or silently, apartheid South Africa and Ian Smith of Southern Rhodesia.

President Hichilema can therefore learn from Dr. Kaunda who deftly balanced local, regional and global interests without harming Zimbabwe and SADC member states.

Mnangagwa Battles To Convince Putin To Attack Zambia So to Chase The West Out

In a controversial move, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for Russian military support to defend Zimbabwe against perceived threats from neighboring Zambia. Speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Russia’s Economic Forum, Mnangagwa suggested that deeper Russian involvement in Zimbabwe could deter Western influence in both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

“We can open for the Russian Federation to participate in our economy, especially in the mining sector and in agriculture. There is a lot that we can afford for you to participate in and with that process, the West will run away,” Mnangagwa stated. “You see, the West have just begun consolidating their power in Zambia, our next neighbour. You know there was a time when Zambia and Zimbabwe were one, it was called Northern and Southern Rhodesia, it was one, by the British. But we are now separate.”

Mnangagwa continued, highlighting the historical ties between the nations and their shared past under British colonial rule. He expressed concern over increasing American influence in Zambia, suggesting it was part of a broader strategy to isolate Zimbabwe. “The Americans are consolidating their power in that country, both in terms of security and financial support to Zambia to make sure that we feel lonely, but that will not change us. We have taken a course which as a people that we feel we want to be independent and we will choose our friends ourselves.”

He emphasized Zimbabwe’s historical relationship with Russia, referencing the support received during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. “We are independent today because most of us in the leadership trained here during our war of liberation. We got our independence because we were supported by yourselves here and we do not forget that history; and you have stood by us.”

Mnangagwa outlined specific areas where Zimbabwe seeks Russian assistance, particularly in defense and security, agriculture, and food security. “If opportunity avails later on, we may find time to chat and go into more details on which areas we must focus on in terms of supporting each other, and in terms of where we feel we need extra support more especially in the area of Defence And Security, as well as food security. We can’t go to the West; we have to come here because the West would want to see us down.”

The call for Russian arms to defend self against Zambia suggests Mnangagwa himself is not connected to the West.

But Mnangagwa’s controversial history will now be exposed as multiple documents and videos revealed over the past seven years have show Mnangagwa as more of NATO project, assisted by the British government to execute military coups between 1980 and 2017, which is over 37 years running. In one of these documents, Mnangagwa himself states that he was trained by British Rhodesian spy Dan Stannard.

A British House Of Lords debate has evidence that the British Govt has propped Mnangagwa up so that he takes over power.

An official war veterans’ press conference in Harare in 2019 revealed that Mnangagwa is a British mercenary. The late President Robert Mugabe had also alleged that Mnangagwa had been attempting coups since 1980 as part of British Rhodesian intelligence operations.

In November 2017, First Lady Dr. Grace Mugabe described Emmerson Mnangagwa as a “liquidator” and “ravisher,” accusing him of plotting coups as far back as 1980. At a rally in Harare, Dr. Mugabe stated, “From 1980, this person called Mnangagwa has always wanted to stage a coup. I am in a privileged position and I have the information. He actually wanted to wrestle power from the President. After the 1980 elections, Mnangagwa plotted a coup with the assistance of the whites. He advised the President to leave the country saying the whites wanted to kill him.”

She continued, “The President left for Mozambique and told Samora Machel. Machel directed President Mugabe to go back to Zimbabwe. The President went to see Julius Nyerere, but he found it unnecessary to talk about the coup plot. He had to talk about other things before going back to Zimbabwe. When the President called Mnangagwa from outside the country, Mnangagwa said ‘Don’t come back! Don’t come back!’ with the intention of staging a coup.”

Dr. Mugabe accused Mnangagwa of being a dissolute person who had taken President Mugabe for granted. She said, “This person has always been like that. Makhosini (Minister Hlongwane), that man is a liquidator. He is a ravisher. Go and look up what these words mean.”

In a passionate address, Dr. Mugabe insisted that Mnangagwa would not succeed in unconstitutionally removing President Mugabe from office, describing Mugabe as an “anointed leader.” She condemned factionalism within ZANU-PF and urged the party to work towards fulfilling their promises before the next elections.

Mnangagwa’s recent overture to Putin, coupled with his contentious past, has cast a shadow over his leadership and raised questions about his true allegiances and the stability of the region.- zimeye

Zambia should take Zim security concerns seriously

Zambia should take Zim security concerns seriously

Editorial – The public revelation by Zimbabwe (Zim) president Emerson Mnangagwa against Zambia, that the country is being used as a base by western governments to cause security instability in Zim is a serious matter that should not be glossed over.

External security concerns rank higher in national defense strategies and with the historical cordial relations that have existed between the two nations, Zambia should not be naive that Mnangagwa could mention Zambia by name publicly if the threat levels are being considered moderate or manageable.

Remember that Mnangagwa has strong historical, personal and family ties to Zambia, and for him to break rank and protocol like that, it would be careless for Zambians to take security concerns against Zambia and his engagement with Russian president Vladimir Putin casually.

Zambia has enough challenges of its own development and economic growth right now in load shedding, high cost of living and doing business, high inflation and escalating prices of goods and services etc. Zambia has no business or benefit to gain from creating an enemy out of Zim, its brotherly neighbor.

Like we have seen in the Ukraine – Russia conflict, that war is actually in substance and form – between the western countries (NATO) and Russia backed by some Eastern block countries. It’s typical of shadow boxing between powerful countries fearing direct confrontation.

The irony though is that the war is being fought on Ukrainian soil, with the people of Ukraine paying the ultimate price in lives lost, desecration of their country’s infrastructure and its people scattered as refugees. Today, no serious business activities and long term investments by both local and foreign investors can take place in Ukraine.

As relatively peaceful country’s and neighbors, both Zambia and Zim should avoid being used as a battle ground, to be caught in the cross fire of this battle for global dominance between the West and the East. Both countries have basic economic and underdevelopment challenges.

Zambia may have also committed a strategic error in sending a practicing opposition political party leader in Zambia to monitor Zim elections and the controversial stand he took. The damage to the relations with Zim may have been deeper and may need more diplomatic efforts to mend the wound.

As Africans, have enough wisdom which can enable us to decipher our own afro sayings that ” when elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers”. If our current leaders can’t see this, that Zambia and Zim are the proverbial grass, then we are headed for big trouble.

Let’s ask ourselves one question, is there any African country we can point at which has been developed by any of these current global forces. Is there a model African country which we can say has been developed by the East? Is there an Afro country which the west have developed?

It therefore goes that only Africans can and will develop Africa. And only Zambia’s will develop Zambia. Of course, with strategic international relations designed in Zambias interest and win win arrangements.- ZBT

HH has shutdown down the economy – Silavwe

By Kholiwe Miti(The Mast)

UKA communications chairperson Jackson Silavwe says President Hakainde Hichilema has successfully shutdown the Zambian economy.

He says the UPND policy of withdrawing cash from circulation is not helping the growth of the economy.

“It is clear that President Hichilema has successfully shutdown the Zambian economy. Household poverty continues to go far higher and higher. Indeed, it is correct to assume and to state that the Zambian economy is back to the colonial era of the economy where civil servants and those with paid up jobs were the only people that had an income at the end of the month. Weak economic policies are leading to weak kwacha, unstable fuel prices, high cost of goods and services, high cost of transport, no income at households, more hardships and more desperation. More stress, more crime in our compounds and residential areas, more mental health breakdown, high suicide rates, high poverty levels and high cost of doing business is the current synopsis of a Zambian economy under President Hichilema and his new dark (dawn) administration,” Silavwe said. “On the other hand a strong economy increases income to individuals and businesses. A strong economy reduces poverty, providing jobs, increases affordability of goods and services, families are able to eat or afford a bag of mealie meal. A good economy unlocks the private sector so that people can be able to have jobs. To a large extent the high cost of living in President Hakainde Hichilema’s new dark government is traced to the two factors introduced by themselves. Number one, the perceived mopping of excess cash from the local economy which is a hoax, by increasing the monitory policy rate (MPR) and the statutory reserve ratio. President Hichlema shutdown the informal local sector in one single blow.”

He said less money in circulation has directly hit local small and medium business with very law sales.

“Households in the compounds are unable to get a piecework and afford the basics of life. Yes, the majority who depend on the informal sector can no longer afford the basics such as mealie meal hence the cries in the compounds of njala or insala (hunger). And the second reason why the cost of living and dong business has been pushed up is due to the fluctuating fuel prices. A closer look at the foreign exchange rate indicate that all major convertibles are dancing to the song of the fuel prices by the ERB,” Silavwe said. “This is extremely catastrophic in an import led economy with more than 80 per cent of the products of tuntembas (makeshift stalls), groceries and chain stores are all from outside the country. All the people in the country must dance to the high cost of doing business. This is now compounded by the long hours of load shedding. Production or productivity has been shutdown in our economy.”

He said the United Kwacha Alliance is not just an alliance that speaks “but also offers solutions”.

“Instead of sending cadres to disrupt a rally, instead of arresting leading opposition critical voices in our country, instead of now misgoverning the country based on innuendos, we wish to advise President Hakainde Hichilema and his cabinet the following: as a short term measure can you stop the monthly review of fuel prices forthwith and replaced by only two reviews in each half of the year, preferably March and August respectively,” said Silavwe. “We propose to you to incentivise small and medium business to produce and employ more locals. Small and medium enterprises form the basis of any economy. Right now they are suffocated. It will not do well for you to continue giving tax holidays to mining companies who are your friends, publicly you have said they are your friends, when a kantemba closes because they cannot afford to order goods for them to sell.”

HICHILEMA AND DEPLOYING THE ARMY- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA AND DEPLOYING THE ARMY

Mr Hakainde Hichilema recently said he will use the army to bring sanity, if the police are failing to discharge their duties.

To begin with, it is within Mr Hichilema’s powers to do so. And any measure that guarantees the security and physical safety of all citizens regardless of their political affiliation is commendable. However, if not properly coordinated and thought through, such an order has potential to give rise to disastrous consequences, which may eventually be damaging to Mr Hichilema’s administration and legacy.

We say this because unlike the police, soldiers or combat training centers around how to kill, in order for them to do it more frequently and competently. It’s all about enabling them to use lethal violence and force. In short, unlike the police, soldiers are trained to kill without hesitation. And so, releasing soldiers on the streets can easily turn into a bloodbath overnight. Anyway, let Mr Hichilema unleash soldiers and see how many people will die. And why the army? Are we under a State of Emergency or is Mr Hichilema planning to declare a State of Emergency?

Also, for once, can Mr Hichilema stop the hypocrisy and lies. We have persistently warned him to let the police service operate impartially and ethically, and not like a UPND militia as is the case currently, but he didn’t listen. And now that they’ve succeeded in crushing and destroying the police service, they want to blame the police for this gigantic failure and ineptitude. On July 14, 2023, Mr Hichilema praised the Inspector General of Police Mr Graphael Musamba, for providing leadership in the police service, saying “I wish he came through when we took office”. And today, he wants to turn around and pass culpability on the same police command he was commending not so long ago.

If we may ask: if the police have failed, how have they failed? What is it that they’ve done wrong? So, when Mr Hichilema was choking the police service with UPND cadres, what did he expect to get in return? He has reconfigured the police into a UPND militia and they’ve been operating as such. Mr Hichilema sowed this confusion and incompetence in the police and he is only reaping what he sowed. For us, Mr Musamba is the worst Inspector General in history, and as long as the police remain loaded with UPND cadres we shall expect the nastiest policing and law enforcement. And why is Mr Hichilema blaming the police service after destroying it?

We sympathize with Mr Hichilema and we understand his fears and insecurities at the moment. No doubt, he has lost the people’s goodwill and support, pressure has mounted, and he knows that he has no time left to change the status quo. And the only option left is intimidation and scare tactics to silence citizens and critics. It’s clear, Mr Hichilema wants to govern without opposition hence this reckless talk of deploying the army but this too won’t help him.

If he insists, let him deploy the army and we shall see if it will fix the economy, reduce the price of fuel, mealie meal and other essential commodities. We want to see how the deployment of the army on the streets shall reduce the cost of living, unemployment, loadshedding and promote national unity and peace.

Zambezi region not created by us, we are voicing out what we hear – Oasis Forum

Zambezi region not created by us, we are voicing out what we hear – Oasis Forum

By Thomas Ngala(The Mast)

LAW Association of Zambia (LAZ) president Lungisani Zulu has clarified that the issue of the Zambezi region is not a creation of the Oasis Forum.

During a briefing on Monday, interim Oasis Forum chairperson Grace Sinkamba said there are concerns from some sections of society that the so-called Zambezi region is favoured when it comes to appointments to key governance positions.

The remarks prompted Chanda Chiluba, a “concerned citizen” who stormed the briefing and introduced herself saying “I come here representing myself as a citizen of this country, first of all, and secondly as a young Bemba mother who is raising a Luvale child.”

Chiluba claimed to have been ignorant about the Zambezi region that Sinkamba was talking about and called on her to clarify what she meant.

And a named journalist asked the panelists if talking about the so-called Zambezi region would perpetrate regionalism further than it already is.

Taking up the questions, Zulu said the country must be willing to talk about matters as they are.

“I think as a country, if we must make progress, we must be willing to deal with issues as they are. If we bury them and pretend they don’t exist, because we are speaking on national television and otherwise, yet these are conversations everywhere else, then we will not make substantial progress,” Zulu said. “So the issue of the Zambezi region is something…born out of a perception. That is why the Oasis Forum is calling on the government to take decisive steps, not to ignore the perception. Because ignoring that it exists is what is fuelling what is happening in the country.”

He said there is need for the country to appreciate that the matter in question exists and it is a sense of marginalisation from a certain group of Zambians.

“… it could be right, it could be wrong. But saying we should not discuss it, we should not even pay attention to it, will not result in any progress for the country. But looking at what it is and taking steps to ensure that there is inclusivity, there is a deliberate effort by the government to pay attention to this complaint, then we will make progress as a nation,” said Zulu. “I think that is where we are standing. So we are not debating whether it’s not a creation of the Oasis Forum. The Zambezi region is not created by us. We are just voicing out what we hear.”

Visionless Lungu Must Shut Up – Johabi Mtonga

Visionless Lungu must shut up – Johabi

He writes:

We knew and still know that Edgar Lungu was visionless while in State House but what we didn’t imagine was that he could carry his visionless status in defeat after the 2021 general elections.

Indeed Edgar Lungu kept quiet on significant happenings in the country and only concentrated on lifting himself and his cronies from poverty.
This is the reason he could not address Zambians through press conferences on pertinent issues of public interest.

Last week, Edgar Lungu was crying and mourning to President Hakainde Hichilema about cadres making his life uncomfortable.
He specifically asked President Hichilema who is Commander- in-Chief of the Armed Forces to control the unruly cadres.

President Hichilema addressed the issues of law and order and some cadres are already in Police cells awaiting their day in court.
The President also addressed hate speech and tribal division talk in the country and informed Zambians that a new law is coming to punish offenders.

How can Edgar Lungu then turn around and tell Zambians that upholding national values is unimportant?

President Hichilema is unlike Edgar Lungu who allowed PF cadres to take over markets and bus stations where they were depriving innocent Zambians dignified liveliholds.

It is a warning to Zambians that if they allowed Edgar Lungu and his cabal of thieves to come back, which they can’t, dictatorship will rein again.

Edgar Lungu and his minions don’t want power to serve Zambians but to pocket public funds and also brutalise citizens into submission.

We know this because over the years, Edgar Lungu’s vision is to amass wealth from public office and apportion it to him, wife and children.

Just how can a so called top-notch lawyer steal a pension from a widow if he was making good money?
Unlike you Edgar Lungu who believes in depriving pensions to retired workers, their wives and children, President Hichilema is paying them within three months after leaving work.
Unlike you Edgar Lungu who opted to keep children from poor families out of school, President Hichilema offers them free education in public schools.

Unlike you Edgar Lungu who was borrowing without a vision, President Hichilema is dismantling the debts through restructuring to enable the country have a breather and embark on sustainable development.

Mr Edgar Lungu, you never had a vision to speak to Zambians at press briefing about their needs apart from lifting yourself and family from poverty.
As a visionless sixth president of Zambia who has nothing to offer but violence, keep quiet.

Your disruptive behavior will not work adada!

COMMENTS ON PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S STATEMENT THAT HE WAS ON A DEATH ROW

✅ Government has noted with concern statements from certain sectors of society disputing the statement made by President Hichilema that he was on death row when he was in opposition as mere politics.

✅ The President’s statement is informed by law contrary to the said assertions.

✅ Meanwhile, Government is concerned that at a critical time when the police and investigative wings are busy trying to put together other relevant pieces of evidence pertaining to the alleged abduction of Emmanuel Jay Banda, various unsubstantiated comments keep popping up from his lawyer Sakwiba Sikota.

✅ Government would like to urge Mr. Sikota to differentiate between his role of being a lawyer of Emmanuel Banda and that of a political commentator or participant of the United Liberal Party.

✅ Government awaits investigation from the police about Emmanuel Banda’s disappearance to put together pieces of evidence to show who would have been behind his alleged abduction and be brought to book.

It’s a mistake and I apologise – UK’s Sunak sorry for early departure from D-Day event

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak returned home for an interview before attending the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Allied troops’ arrival in Normandy, France.

Domestically, his Conservative Party is trailing behind the Labour Party in the polls.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized on Friday for leaving D-Day anniversary commemorations in northern France early.

He left the Thursday event, held to commemorate the landing of Allied troops in German-occupied France 80 years ago, to conduct a television interview for his reelection campaign in the UK.

Sunak misses main D-Day ceremony
Sunak returned home before he could attend a ceremony at Ohama Beach on the coast of the northwestern French region of Normandy.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden attended the event. King Charles III also traveled to France to participate in the commemorations.

“After the conclusion of the British event in Normandy, I returned back to the UK,” Sunak said in a post on the platform X, formerly Twitter.

“On reflection, it was a mistake not to stay in France longer — and I apologize,” he said. “The last thing I want is for the commemorations to be overshadowed by politics.

“I care deeply about veterans and have been honored to represent the UK at a number of events in Portsmouth and France over the past two days and to meet those who fought so bravely,” he added.

Sunak was interviewed by Britain’s ITV news broadcaster. The program is due to air on Wednesday.

Opposition politicians criticize Sunak

Jonathan Ash, a member of Parliament for the main opposition Labour Party, accused Sunak of prioritizing “his own vanity TV appearances over our veterans.”

The head of the centrist Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, said Sunak had brought “shame” to the office of prime minister in a “total dereliction of duty” and had “let down” the UK.

Sunak has been serving as Britain’s prime minister since October 2022, after succeeding Liz Truss from the same party.

Polls indicate that the Conservative Party, which has been in power for 14 years and seen five different prime ministers, may face a loss in the general election on July 4.

High School Teacher has reportedly taken his own life after losing a bet on an online casino

A teacher at Nyamira Boys High School in Kenya has reportedly taken his own life after losing a bet on an online casino.

Nyamira Township Assistant Chief, Johnson Manyara said Kelvin Omwenga died by suicide at his rented house on Wednesday night, June 5, 2024.

The administrator added that the teacher had lost about Sh50,000 in the betting.

“I was informed by locals about a teacher who had ended his life,” Mr Manyara said.

“I proceeded to his house and notified police officers who arrived and took the body away.”

The assistant chief added that Omwenga’s wife had given birth but was not at home when the incident occurred.

“His wife had travelled upcountry after the couple had been informed that Omwenga’s parents were sick. He told his wife to travel home,” the administrator said.

Nyamira Boys principal George Onkundi said the school fraternity was shocked to learn of the death.

The principal said Omwenga was hired by the Board of Management and he had been at the school for four years.

“He taught mathematics and chemistry. We got concerned when he failed to report to work on Wednesday,” Mr Onkundi said.

He said Omwenga never exhibited symptoms of depression but added that the teacher used to borrow money from colleagues.

“He did not exhibit signs of mental stress but had talked of domestic matters bothering him. He would often get financial help from teachers,” Mr Onkundi said.

Another teacher told the Daily Nation that Omwenga borrowed money from him often, promising to repay “soon”.

“Omwenga recently took a loan from me. He shared a plan on how the money would be repaid in small bits until everything was settled,” said the teacher who did not want to be named.

“I last talked to him on Tuesday. I am really shocked and saddened to learn about his death and the manner in which it is said to have happened. I cannot authoritatively say he killed himself, for that is an issue police need to investigate and make a report.”

Supermodel Naomi Campbell confirms she welcomed her two children via surrogate

Naomi Campbell has confirmed that she welcomed her two children via surrogate after becoming a mother for the first time at the age of 50.

The British supermodel, now 54, shocked the world in 2021 when she announced the surprise birth of her daughter followed by a son in 2023.

Naomi has now discussed how much her children mean to her.

Telling The Times: ‘My babies are everything to me. It’s made me fear for the future’.

Supermodel, Naomi Campbell confirms she welcomed her two children via surrogate, says she was

Naomi went on to explain that she was never looking for a father for her kids and is happy being ‘a single mother of a single mum’.

When asked wether she used a surrogate the model replied: ‘I did. I hope for a better world for my children. They are 110 percent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.’

Naomi also spoke of her concern that younger generations are not interested in having children, before insisting that parenthood is always ‘worth it’, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

Supermodel, Naomi Campbell confirms she welcomed her two children via surrogate, says she was

‘I have heard a lot of young girls saying that it is too expensive to have children and they may not want them, and I have said, “You will change your mind. You will want to be a mum”‘.

‘I understand economically it is tough. But my mum had nothing and she made it work. It’s worth it. It is so amazing’.

She continued: ‘We have to depend on the younger generation to change this world. I trust my children more than us to do the right thing.’

Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she won’t let her daughter go into the world of work at 15 like she did, after starting her own career in her teenage years when she did her first cover shoot.

The supermodel traveled abroad to model in her first photoshoot for Elle in New Orleans aged 15.

According to Naomi, she would be uncomfortable with her now two-year-old to start working so young.

The mother-of-two said: ‘I’m not sure I would let her start working at 15. It’s a ruthless world.’

Dad shocks patrons by preventing daughter from shaking hands with superintendent at graduation

A Wisconsin dad took a gathering at a high school graduation ceremony aback when he interrupted the proceedings by rushing the stage to prevent his daughter from shaking hands with the superintendent.

Matt Eddy, 49, brought the ceremony to a momentary stop when his daughter was about to receive her diploma. Eddy grabbed the superintendent Rainey Briggs by the arm and pushed him aside, shocking the attendees, according to Daily Mail.

“That’s my daughter,” the man is heard saying in the footage, as his daughter looks mortified. At some point, he appears to say: “I don’t want her touching him.”

The motives behind Eddy’s actions at the Baraboo High School graduation ceremony remain unknown, but social media users have criticized him for allegedly ruining his daughter’s special moment.

One YouTube user said: “Can’t be that great of a father to do that to your daughter. She will only have one high school graduation, and he decided to make it about him.”

Another said: “I don’t think there’s anything in this world that could make me embarrass and disrespect my child like that. Her face and reaction made me want to cry for her.”

The school district, meanwhile, said in a statement: “Our primary focus remains on celebrating the achievements of our graduates. We want to ensure that the significance of this milestone and the hard work of our students are not overshadowed by this unfortunate event.”

The school district has stated that it is collaborating with law enforcement following the incident.

“We would like to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is a top priority… The School District of Baraboo is taking this incident very seriously.”

The school board issued a statement addressing Eddy’s actions at the graduation ceremony.

“No employee of the School District of Baraboo should fear for their physical safety when fulfilling their job duties or at any other time,” the school board said.

“That this adult felt emboldened to behave in this way in front of hundreds of students and other adults should deeply trouble us all; this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

A disorderly conduct charge against Eddy has been referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

Baraboo High School previously made headlines in 2018 when a photo appeared to show students giving a Nazi salute.

In an exclusive interview then, Peter Gust claimed the predominantly white group of boys were simply waving goodbye to their parents, not making a political statement.

“I am very frustrated and find it reprehensible that people all over the world can snap to a judgment without knowing any facts and go ape — and it is coming from all over the world,” he said.

South African opposition parties begin talks on the ANC’s unity plan

0

South Africa’s opposition parties have started talks aimed at considering the ruling African National Congress’ offer to become part of a government of national unity.

The meeting which started on Friday, June 7 is expected to continue to next week.

ANC failed to secure a majority in last week’s highly contested election, but some opposition parties are already rejecting the party’s offer because of deep-seated divisions.

Senior officials of the main opposition Democratic Alliance, or DA, will meet on Monday to discuss the centrist party’s approach to the negotiations. The top leadership of the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters, or EFF, party were holding talks on Friday.

Parties are under pressure to conclude negotiations and reach an agreement by June 16, because South Africa’s constitution requires them to do so within 14 days after the declaration of the election results.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is ANC leader, announced on Thursday that the party had decided to form a government of national unity and had invited all parties to join, a process that is expected to be complex considering vast divisions among the opposition parties themselves.

Most of the opposition parties don’t differ only with the ANC on various socioeconomic policies, but are also at extreme odds with each other on economic policies like land redistribution and affirmative action.

Opposition party ActionSA has already declared it won’t be part of the negotiations, saying that it refuses to work with the ANC.

In what looks likely to be a government of national unity reminiscent of a path taken by the Nelson Mandela-led ANC after the country’s first democratic election in 1994, the party has decided to invite a myriad of opposition parties to be part of the government.

While Mandela insisted on a unity government despite the ANC having won by an overwhelming majority with nearly 63% of the national vote, the ANC has been forced into the current situation by its worst electoral performance ever, dropping from the 57.5% it got in the 2019 election to 40% this year, a decline of 17.5%.

Shortly after Ramaphosa’s announcement, the EFF’s leader took to X to reject Ramaphosa’s proposal of a government of national unity and accused the ANC of arrogance despite failing to win a majority.

The EFF is among the top five parties after the election with just over 9% of the national vote, having declined from the 11% it garnered in 2019 but is expected to form a crucial part of the eventual outcome of the negotiations.

“The arrogance continues even after the South African voters issued warning signs. You can’t dictate the way forward as if you have won elections,” EFF leader Julius Malema said. “We are not desperate for anything, ours is a generational mission.

“We can’t share power with the enemy,” Malema said.

In 2023, DA declared the Economic Freedom Fighters as its No. 1 enemy.

DA, which got just over 21% of the national vote to remain the second-biggest party, said its highest decision-making body, the Federal Council, would meet on Monday to consider its options.

“I can’t say now what the position of the DA is, we have a whole negotiation team and we are meeting as the federal council on Monday. We will have a framework for negotiations that we will release this weekend,” Democratic Alliance federal chairperson Helen Zille said Friday.

The fifth-biggest party with nearly 4% of the national vote, the Inkatha Freedom Party, on Friday expressed willingness to be part of the government of national unity, but was also set to discuss the matter with its party structures over the next few days.

“In principle, the IFP is not averse to a GNU (government of national unity). However, the devil is in the details, which will become clearer in the coming days … enabling the IFP to make a well-considered decision,” IFP spokesman Mkhuleko Hlengwa said.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party led by former President Jacob Zuma, who left the ANC, was the latest to enter the negotiations, with the party confirming on Thursday that it had begun talks with the ANC after initially failing to respond to the party’s invitation.

The party has raised objections about the election results to the country’s electoral body, citing alleged voting irregularities and threatening to boycott the first sitting of Parliament to swear in the country’s new lawmakers.

Economists say that the markets are keenly awaiting the outcome of the negotiations to see the composition of the next government of Africa’s most developed economy and the economic policies it will pursue.

Joe Biden said he would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, if he’s found guilty

US President Joe Biden said in an interview Thursday he would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, if he’s found guilty of criminal federal gun charges.

When asked by interviewer David Muir of ABC if he would rule out pardoning Hunter Biden, the president said, “Yes.”

Biden also affirmed he would accept the outcome of the trial, currently taking place in his home state of Delaware.

Hunter is accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or being addicted to drugs, a violation of federal law.

He pleaded not guilty to the three charges, though he’s been open about his struggles with alcohol and crack cocaine addiction. The charges were brought by special counsel David Weiss.

The trial is a painful one for the Biden family, as Hunter Biden was struggling with drug addiction in the aftermath of his brother Beau’s death and even First lady Dr. Jill Biden, Hunter’s stepmom attended the trial before traveling to France to join her husband for D-Day commemoration activities.

The White House had said previously that Biden would not pardon his son.

“I’ve been very clear; the president is not going to pardon his son,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in December.

It’s the first time in US history that the child of a sitting president has been on trial.

Biden has previously voiced support for his son and said he was proud of his recovery from addiction.

“I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” the president said in a statement Monday as the trial was getting underway.

“Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean,” he went on.

“As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength. Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support.”

The trial comes after a New York jury returned 34 guilty counts against former President Donald Trump for falsifying business records in an attempt to cover up hush money payments to a porn actress.

Trump ally and former adviser Steve Bannon ordered to report to prison by July 1

A US federal judge on Thursday, June 6 ordered former Donald Trump adviser, Steve Bannon to report to prison by July 1.

Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress in 2022 after failing to provide documents and testimony to the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack. He was sentenced to four months in prison.

The federal judge presiding over the case, Carl Nichols, had initially paused the sentence while Bannon appealed the conviction.

But last month, a DC Circuit Court of Appeals panel unanimously rejected several challenges Bannon made to the case, and prosecutors immediately asked Nichols to send Bannon to prison to begin serving his sentence.

Nichols said Thursday that, given the appeals court ruling, he did not believe the basis he had for pausing Bannon’s sentence “exists any longer.”

The judge, who was appointed by Trump, said that he concluded that he had the authority to lift the hold on Bannon’s sentence, even as an appeal of conviction will continue.

Shortly after the hearing concluded, Bannon vowed to fight his contempt of Congress conviction “all the way to the Supreme Court if we have to.”

Bannon also claimed without evidence that his prosecution by the Justice Department was about “shutting down the MAGA movement, shutting down grassroots conservatives, shutting down President Trump.”

“There’s nothing that can shut me up and nothing that will shut me up. There’s not a prison built or a jail built that will ever shut me up,” he told reporters outside the federal courthouse in Washington.

“We’re going to win at the Supreme Court,” he added.

Prosecutor John Crabb said that Bannon had not satisfied the legal threshold for staying out of prison while his appeal continued. Crabb pointed to the failed effort by Peter Navarro, another ex-Trump adviser prosecuted for refusing to comply with a House January 6 committee subpoena, to pause his sentence, an effort that was rebuffed by the DC Circuit and the Supreme Court.

At the hearing, Bannon’s attorney, David Schoen, argued that his client should be able to remain out of prison until the Supreme Court had a chance to weigh in on the case. Schoen also said that his request for the full DC Circuit Court of Appeals to review the case would be filed by June 24.

Nichols said Navarro’s case presented different issues, and the judge ultimately pointed to the fact that three appeals court judges “wholeheartedly” rejected the arguments Bannon was making in his case.

With less than a month until the surrender date, Bannon could try to file emergency motions with the appeals court and even the Supreme Court seeking to push off his sentence longer.

Russian female judge has been found dead after falling from a high window in Moscow

A Russian female judge has been found dead after falling from a high window in Moscow.

Natalia Larina, 50, had a reputation for handing down punishments to Moscow authorities and was more known for handling prominent criminal cases.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of her death close to her apartment block on 1st Mashinostroeniya Street in the Russian capital.

Larina had a young daughter, according to reports.

Investigators are understood to be checking one theory in local reports which suggested she had lost a large sum of money to ‘telephone scammers’.

Shortly before her death, she allegedly reported to police that fraudsters convinced her that her bank account was under threat from people seeking to send her funds to help the armed forces of Ukraine.

She transferred her cash – said to be one million rubles (around £8,800) to another account, and in doing so became a victim of a scam.

Sources say she became upset that she was ‘deceived’, and left a note.

However, there is no official confirmation so far of this version of events.

Larina was a criminal judge for more than 15 years, and her death came months after she suddenly quit the Tagansky Court.

She had acted as a judge in various high-profile fraud cases.

In 2015, she remanded in custody artist Pyotr Pavlensky who set fire to a door of the FSB building in Lubyanka Square in a political protest.

Earlier she gave a judgement against the hardline National Bolsheviks. And in 2011, Larina sentenced Ministry of Transport official Vladimir Makarov, accused of sexually abusing his daughter.

Larina is not the only high-ranking Russian official whose death from falling out of a window has aroused suspicion since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In December 2023, Vladimir Egorov, 46 – the Tobolsk City Duma – dropped to his death from a third-floor window in the city.

He was a member of Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party, and his corpse was found in the yard of his house.

In June of that same year, the glamorous vice-president of a Russian bank reportedly plunged to her death after falling from the window of her Moscow apartment.

Kristina Baikova, 28, allegedly fell from her 11th-floor apartment on Khodynsky Boulevard in the early hours. She died instantly at the scene.

In February, a top Russian defence official was found dead after plunging 160ft from a tower block window. Marina Yankina, 58, was discovered by a passerby at the entrance of a house on Zamshina Street in St Petersburg.

She is believed to have fallen from the 16th floor to her death.

Woman who had no idea she’s pregnant gives birth at restaurant bathroom

A woman went with her family to a Golden Corral restaurant on May 4 for lunch but ended up giving birth when she went the the bathroom.

Tayvia Woodfork and her family arrived at the restaurant as a party of 11 but left as 12.

Tayvia went straight to the bathroom when her family arrived at the all-you-can-eat chain in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

“She was complaining that her stomach hurt,” Tayvia’s mother, Tameka Woodfork, tells TODAY.com.

Unknown to Tayvia, she was 37 weeks pregnant and in active labor.

What Tayvia experienced is called a cryptic pregnancy, a rare situation in which someone does not know they are pregnant for most or all of gestation.

Tayvia, 26, says she didn’t gain any weight or feel any fetal movement.

Woman who had no idea she

“There were no signs,” Tameka tells TODAY. “We had no idea.”

When 10 minutes had passed and Tayvia was still in the ladies room, Tameka went to check on her.

Right away, Tameka knew that her daughter was dealing with more than cramps. She was crying out in pain and needed medical attention.

“I didn’t know what was happening,” Tayvia tells TODAY.com.

“I said, ‘We have to go to the hospital,’ but she couldn’t move her legs, so we ended up calling 911,’” Tameka says.

Moments after paramedics arrived, Tayvia gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Woman who had no idea she

“They were still trying to figure out what was going on when she goes, ‘It’s out! It’s out!’” Tameka recalls. “The baby was in the toilet.”

At this point, word had spread that a customer had given birth.

“When we walked out, everybody was clapping and people were lined up to see,” Tameka says.

Tayvia gave her son the name Tamaar Kylon Corral Woodfork.

Woman who had no idea she

People were suggesting “Golden” but Tayvia says she likes Corral better. Tamaar joined big brother Taylon, 2.

Golden Corral shared the news across its social media and crowned him the chain’s “youngest fan.”

“As surprised as our team was at the news of a baby being born at our restaurant, we are truly honored to play such a momentous role in little Tamaar’s life,” a Golden Corral spokesperson said in a statement. “But no honor compares to having Tamaar carry on the ‘Golden Corral’ brand name in his own name, Tamaar Kylon Corral Woodfork!”

Tameka says the restaurant surprised them with box of baby essentials and a Golden Corral gift card.

According to his mom, Tamaar loves to eat, which is only fitting for a baby born at an endless buffet!

Russia’s economy growing significantly; China is alleged to be helping

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 not only ignited global condemnation but also prompted a series of sanctions aimed at undermining the Kremlin’s capacity to wage war against its neighbouring country.

These measures included freezing Russia’s assets abroad, isolating its economy from the global financial system, and directing sanctions specifically towards its energy exports.

I can remember Western officials and commentators describing the sanctions as “crippling,” “debilitating,” and “unprecedented.”

With adjectives like these filling the airwaves, the situation seemed clear.

There was surely no way that Russia’s economy would withstand the pressure.

Faced with the prospect of an economic collapse, the Kremlin would be forced to back down and withdraw its troops.

After twenty-seven months, the conflict persists. Surprisingly, Russia’s economy is not weak but rather flourishing.

The International Monetary Fund forecasts a growth rate of 3.2% for Russia this year, surpassing that of any advanced economy.

Despite being described as “debilitating,” sanctions have not led to shortages in Russian stores.

Supermarket shelves remain well-stocked.

However, inflation is a concern, and some Western companies have withdrawn from the Russian market in response to the invasion of Ukraine, leading to certain products no longer being available for sale.

But many of their products still find their way into Russia through a variety of routes. If you look hard enough, you can still find American cola in Russian stores.

While CEOs from Europe and America may be less inclined to attend Russia’s annual showcase economic event, the organisers of this year’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum assert that delegates from over 130 countries and territories are participating.

Despite the challenges posed by Western sanctions, the Russian economy has pivoted towards developing new markets in the East and the Global South.

Russian officials are keen to highlight that attempts to politically and economically isolate Russia have not yielded the desired results.

“It looks like the Russian economy managed to adjust to very unfavourable external conditions,” says Yevgeny Nadorshin, senior economist at PF Capital. ”Without any doubt, sanctions broke a lot in the mechanism of operation inside the economy. But a lot has been restored. Adaptation is happening.”

Workaround

Does this mean that sanctions have failed?
“The big issue was our understanding of what sanctions can and cannot do,” says Elina Ribakova, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

“It’s not like flipping a switch and Russia disappears. What sanctions can do is throw a country off balance temporarily until it finds a way to work around the sanctions, until it finds alternative ways to get shipments or sell its oil.

We’re eactly in that space where Russia has found a workaround.”

Moscow has redirected its oil exports from Europe to China and India. In December 2022, G7 and EU leaders introduced a price cap plan aimed at limiting the revenue Russia earns from its oil exports by trying to keep it below $60 a barrel.

But Western experts concede that Russia has been able to circumvent this quite easily.

The story of the price cap highlights a dilemma for the US and its partners.

Recognising that Russia is one of the largest players on the global energy market, they have tried to keep Russian oil flowing to avoid hiking energy prices. The result of that is that Moscow is still making money.

“In a way, we refused to properly sanction Russian oil,” Elina Ribakova concludes. “This price cap is an attempt to have our cake and eat it.

The priorities are to allow Russian oil to enter the market and to reduce Russia’s revenue. And when these two priorities conflict, unfortunately, the first one wins.

This substantial revenue stream enables Russia to sustain its operations, including the ongoing conflict.”

Russia has emerged as China’s primary oil supplier, underscoring the significance of their economic relationship beyond energy exports. China has become a crucial lifeline for the Russian economy, with bilateral trade reaching a staggering $240 billion last year.

A stroll through the streets of St. Petersburg or Moscow reveals the profound impact of China on a Russia affected by sanctions.

Electronics stores are brimming with Chinese tablets, gadgets, and mobile phones, while Chinese car dealers have gained dominance in the local automotive market.

Mwamba Sues Attorney General and Demands Immediate Return of His Mobile Phones

Lusaka- Friday, 7th June 2024

Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba has sued the Attorney General demanding for the Zambia Police to immediately return his mobile phones that officers illegally confiscated.

In a legal suit taken in the Lusaka High Court and filed on Friday, Amb. Mwamba said the phones were confiscated without reason or justification.

In the affidavit in support of the Petition, Mr. Mwamba narrated that in the early morning of 27th May 2024, he was with other leaders at Medlands Hospital after it was discovered that Petauke Central Independent Member of Parliament, Emmanuel JJ Banda was discovered and was being transfered from Kafue District Hospital to the Medlands Hospital.

He said a large contingent of Police Officers led by Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Creto Kaanza, were also present and were engaged in an apparent operation to remove Hon. Banda from Medlands Hospital and evacuate him to Maina Soko Medical Hospital.

He said however both the family and hospital staff objected to this movement which ensued into a brutal and forceful removal of Hon. Banda from Medlands Hospital.

He said in the ensuing chaos, many members of the family and other civilian persons present began to film the tussle.

This resulted in Police officers turning on citizens and confiscating phones including that of Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba.

He said he was told that the phones could be collected from Anti-Robbery Squad Unit room C5 at Lusaka Central Police Station, the team that was part of that night operation.

He said the following day on Tuesday, 28th May 2024, he followed up on the collection of his phone.

He said the Police released all other phones except that of Emmanuel Mwambas.

He said efforts to collect the phones have proved futile.

He said he proceeded to engage his lawyers who were unable to retrieve the phones from the Police.

It is for this reason that he has sought high court’s protection of his fundamental rights.

Mr. Mwamba is seeking remedies that include;
1. The Zambia Police violated his fundamental rights to property and privacy as guaranteed in Article 17 of the Republican Constitution.

2. That the Police were discrimanatory when they released all other phones except his and therefore contravened Article 11 of the Republican Constitution.
3. That the conduct of the Police violated Mwamba’s right to protection.

4. An order of court for the immediate return of his mobile phones.

5. Compensation for the loss of use of the phones during this period of unlawful confiscation.

6. Damages for the emotional distress caused by the action of the Police.

7. And legal and other associated costs.

The June 5 HH presser in Lusaka

…did it answer all your questions?

I have been a journalist of many years, bagged an excellence World Bank Investigative Journalism award for my work, and rose all the way to the top of the media management ladder.

I have been a diplomat for a long time, having worked at the highest level as Ambassador, bagged an Ambassador´s award there too.

In all fairness, I can humbly I have bragging rights to say I can comprehend lots of current affair’s issues, socio-economic, political, and international relations with not much ado, analyse them too.

On June 5, however, I found it hard to comprehend what our dear President Hichilema set out to tell the nation during that almost three-hour press conference.

I heard him talk about Edgar Lungu and Edgar Lungu and Edgar Lungu again, some Jay Jay Banda here and there, then some arrests and a stiffer law against tribalism on the cards coming June when parliament resumes sitting.

I heard him speak about being on ´Death Row´ while he was in opposition before becoming the 7th President of Zambia, but I wasn’t sure which one, ´Death Row Records´? a music label founded by Shug Knight, Dr Dre, and Dick Griffey or the real one.

We must ask counsel Makebi Zulu for a legal opinion on this because the jury is still out.
I waited for a long time to hear about the prolonged hours of load shedding (lack of electricity), escalating costs of mealie meal, fuel, and other commodities for a long while.

I thought that would be the first issue on the President´s Bucket List, but it came in one line at the tail end of the hour’s long presser just before the question-and-answer session started.

The Q&A was ever my favourite point at a presser, adrenaline raising for a news junkie like me, but then I can’t even recall what questions were asked by our local scribes during the presidential address.

Don’t get me wrong, asking no questions sometimes means you have understood everything.

So, I come to hear in my ignorance and limited knowledge; what did you hear at the President HH presser, and what did you not hear so I can learn from you?

There´s no wrong or right answer, just the facts, Folks. Happy weekend! Charge your phones and laptops in advance if you do not want to miss the Chipolopolo-Morrocco game tonight at 9, so you can watch it on your gadgets. Ciao bello!

DON’T FALL IN THEIR TRAP

DON’T FALL IN THEIR TRAP

By Politics24 Editors

As Politics24, we have noted that the Zambia Police has continued playing in the hands of the disorganised opposition in Zambia.

If left unchecked, the Police 🚔 has the capacity to make the current President of Zambia look bad in the eyes of voters including the international community.

Stopping a group fools in numbers from conducting illegal activities is not the solution but allow them to commit the crimes and then cage them.

Zambians know that there is no one who would mobilise the country in a short space and do illegal things and these opposition are really fooling the Police by making notices for rallies and all when they know that they have no capacity to do so but they know that the Police will react.

Our view is that these war-wishers should be allowed to conduct their illegal activities and if any other political party wants to play politics, can join them at those events and break their legs.

If M’membe or that Chishala loses their front tooth because of internal fights at a rally in Mandevu or Kanyama, Police would then justify why they say that there is need to assess if the environment is okay for such gathering.

Politics is about perception and if anyone wants to play politics, just allow 20 of your members to join M’membe or Chishala or Lungu at their rally and then beat the hell out of them. After all, Miles Sampa claims to be leader of the PF.

If they attack each other, Police must not even arrest anyone because that is their making but stopping them from being attacked by their own members is making them grow bi headed.

As things are; The deranged opposition will continue lying that they will gather in this place knowing too well that Police will stop them and once that is done, then they will stand on mountains to shout that there is no democracy in Zambia but instead, allow them to go ahead and let their own members break their legs in demand for money.

Don’t fall in their trap. If you want to catch a thief, use a thief to catch the thief. They are fooling you, use their members to break their legs and they cause public disorder or damage public and private property, jail them.

Dr. Lloyd; Yes, it’s a speculation.

Makebi Zulu- No further questions Your Honour.

RULING OF THE LEGAL PRACTITIONERS COMMITTEE OF THE LAW ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA AGAINST MR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

RULING OF THE LEGAL PRACTITIONERS COMMITTEE OF THE LAW ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA AGAINST MR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

On 16th April 2009, the Legal Practitioners Committee (LPC) of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) received a complaint from a Ms Wendy Kanyanta against Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu claiming he had illegally obtained fees of K36,080.42 from compensation meant for her despite already being paid costs of K40,000.00 from the unsuccessful party, Lafarge Cement, who were her former employers.

Both parties were summoned before the LPC on 24th July 2009 and Mr Lungu was asked to respond to the accusation. Mr Lungu admitted having obtained the money on the understanding that they were legal costs due to him for the services rendered and that an agreement existed between him and the client – which was denied by the client. Following his response, the Legal Practitioners Committee asked for proof for this position but Mr Lungu failed to provide any.

At the next sitting of the LPC on 18th September 2009, it was proven that Mr Lungu did deduct his client’s monies illegally despite receiving costs of K40,000.00 from Lafarge. Mr Lungu did not dispute this finding of the committee and accepted he had acted illegally.

The LPC declared Mr Lungu’s conduct entirely illegal after referring to Rule 17(1) of the Legal Practitioners Practice Rules, 2002 which provides that, “a Practitioner shall inform clients about charges or fees and the basis for such charges on taking instructions.”
Mr Lungu’s failure to inform the client in writing without reasonable cause amounted to professional misconduct or conduct unbefitting a lawyer. It was ordered that Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu should pay back that amount within sixty days from 4th March 2010 when the ruling was made or face further disciplinary proceedings.

In contravention of the order of the LPC, Mr Lungu only paid K9,000.00 of the K36,080.42.
This forced Ms. Kanyanta to sue in the subordinate court under cause no. 2010/CRMP/688 on 6th August 2010 for the balance of K27,080.42. Mr. Lungu admitted guilt to the claim in court on 19th August 2010 and applied to settle the debt in instalments of K5,000.00.
