The Impact of the Bank of Zambia’s Rate Hike

The Bank of Zambia has just raised the interest rate from 12.5% to 13.5%. Let’s break down what this means for all of us, from the big picture to the everyday impacts.

The Bank of Zambia has hiked the interest rate to try and control inflation. By making borrowing more expensive and saving more attractive, they aim to cool down the economy and stop prices from skyrocketing. Think of it like turning down the heat on a pot of milk to prevent it from boiling over.

With the central bank raising rates, commercial banks will likely follow suit, meaning higher interest rates on loans across the board. It’s going to cost more to borrow, whether you’re planning to buy a house, start a business, or take out a personal loan. Higher borrowing costs can slow down economic growth in the short term as people and businesses adjust.

Higher interest rates can attract foreign investors looking for better returns, which might boost the Kwacha. A stronger Kwacha means importers might actually get some good news, as the cost of their imports goes down, making foreign goods cheaper. This could help counterbalance the increased financing costs due to higher interest rates. Exporters, on the other hand, might find it tougher to sell abroad if the Kwacha strengthens, making our goods more expensive for foreigners. However, if the Kwacha weakens, importers might feel the pinch again, but exporters could cheer for being more competitive.

Businesses are in for a rough ride too. Higher interest rates mean it’s more expensive for them to borrow money for things like expanding or buying new equipment. This might slow down business growth and could even put some jobs at risk. Small businesses might feel the squeeze even more.

If you’re thinking about taking out a loan or already have one, brace yourself for higher interest rates. More of your hard-earned money will go towards paying off interest. On the bright side, if you’re saving money, you might see a bit more return.

In the long run, if the Bank of Zambia can keep inflation under control, we could be looking at a more stable and sustainable economy. It’s like taking a detour to avoid a pothole-filled road – slower now, but smoother ahead.

So, there you have it. The Bank of Zambia’s decision to raise the rate to 13.5% is like a double-edged sword. It’s a move to tame inflation and stabilise our economy, but it’s also going to make borrowing more expensive and might slow down growth a bit. As we navigate these changes, let’s stay informed and prepared for the road ahead.

RISING INTEREST RATES AND LACK OF LIQUIDITY IN THE MARKET AS BOZ RAISES INTEREST RATES BY 100 BASIS POINTS- Fred M’membe

RISING INTEREST RATES AND LACK OF LIQUIDITY IN THE MARKET AS BOZ RAISES INTEREST RATES BY 100 BASIS POINTS

Let me first take a historical trend of events before attending to this new development. The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) removed liquidity in the market by raising the statutory reserve ratio on three consecutive times. Meaning funds available with banks to lend to customers were reduced and consequently contracting economic activities. We did mention that these measures will contract the country’s GDP, but we were dismissed. And now, since the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced the downward GDP forecasts from 4.4% to 2.3%, we now agree. Worse still, to hoodwink us, they have entirely attributed the downward revision in GDP to-drought when negative monetary policy decisions that were implemented in the SRR revision are being obscured. The truth is that GDP growth has reduced because of both SRR revision and partially because of the drought. Let truth be told.

Secondly, to address the continuous depreciation of the Kwacha, the solution lies in creating more production and manufacturing capacity so we can increase our exports and reduce dependence on imports. Now, these policy measures are contradictory.

How will business expand or increase production and manufacturing capacity when the cost of borrowing is going up? First, you remove liquidity through upwards adjustment of SRR, and then you increase interest rates! After which, you ask Zambians to open factories. Where are the Zambians going to access affordable credit? To expand or start any business, you need affordable capital.
So this explains why only foreign entities can successfully run businesses in Zambia at the exclusion of Zambians because they borrow in their countries of origin at affordable rates and capital is readily available.

Clearly, our government’s rhetoric of Zambians to participate in business is totally at variance with the policies they are implementing. Surely Mr Hakainde Hichilema, as he claims to be an accomplished economist, can see this. So we can only conclude that he is doing it deliberately!
What would be the reason he would be doing that?
He has come to the conclusion that he is losing in 2026 and setting a trap for his successor to have a difficult time when he takes over in 2026.
Let’s look at Investrust Bank as an example. They could not raise the required funding to sustain the business despite ZCCM IH being a majority shareholder and consequently went under. Why? It is because capital is not readily available on the local market, and the cost of borrowing is too high.

If, say, Stanbic/FNB/Stanchart we’re faced with a similar situation as Investrust Bank, their parent companies would have sourced affordable funds offshore to avert the capital deficiency. Simply put, Zambia is open to foreigners for business and not Zambians as the government has failed to put policy measures that support Zambian businesses. By contrast, they have put policy measures favourably for foreign businesses like the mines.

Our achievement has only been recorded in closing Zambian companies such as DBZ and Investrust, to mention but a few.
If one refuted this notion, then mention one international financial institution both in commercial and non-commercial banking institutions (micro lenders) except Zambian owned, which has closed since UPND took over!

If anything, this is the time we needed a DBZ the most. It should have been well capitalised to provide affordable capital to Zambian businesses. Commercial banks, as per their name, are their to maximise profits, a development bank by their name is their to offer concessional developmental loans.

VIOLENCE, MISUSE OF GOVT VEHICLES AND CORRUPTION CHARACTERIZE OUR BY-ELECTIONS, SP TELLS ECZ

VIOLENCE, MISUSE OF GOVT VEHICLES AND CORRUPTION CHARACTERIZE OUR BY-ELECTIONS, SP TELLS ECZ

Lusaka—Wednesday, May 15th, 2024

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and Socialist party (SP) have held a tense yet crucial meeting where grievances faced by the opposition in Zambia’s political landscape during elections at the hands of the ruling party were voiced.

Party General Secretary Dr. Cosmas Musheke Musumali lamented the absence of resolute condemnation, pointing out a distressing pattern of pre-election intimidation, violence on polling day, and post-election chaos.

He said despite diligent reporting to law enforcement, justice remained elusive, with no action against perpetrators affiliated with the United Party for National Development (UPND).

“We do not see a voice saying this is wrong. There is zero condemnation of violence in elections from the Electoral Commission of Zambia. There is a pattern to it. There is violence that stops us from trying to file in, then violence during elections, and finally, as campaigns come to an end. We have always reported the violence to the police. We have filed reports, but there is no case against a single UPND official or cadre. There are exceptions; we appreciate your personal intervention madam Chairperson in Luangwa, and you saved the young lady’s life after she was abducted. But your voice is critical, and we are not hearing it,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for sporadic interventions, notably during the recently held by-election in Luangwa, Dr. Musumali implored for a more vocal stance from the ECZ.

Meanwhile, Dr. Musumali exposed a web of abuse involving government vehicles, personnel, and even public services manipulated for partisan gains, underlining a systemic rot corroding the electoral process.

“Misuse of GRZ resources and personnel… We are referring to government vehicles, which include ministerial vehicles, DCs, PSs, Directors of Ministries, even vehicles from Parastatals, we have approached some without number plates but transporting UPND material and the driver will tell you that he doesn’t know because he works for ZESCO. We have confronted DCs, and they tell us that if we stay away, the party has no capacity to run this. You have government services being delivered in the by-elections, a road that was not graded but immediately a by-election is announced and immediately it finishes, the 1 kilometre is the only piece that is graded, medicine moved from one hospital to another,” He added.

He called upon the ECZ to shed its technocratic guise, asserting its moral authority to denounce injustices and safeguard the sanctity of elections.

And Dr. Musumali’s impassioned plea underscored the gravity of the challenges facing Zambia’s electoral democracy.

The commission through Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis acknowledged some of the matters raised adding that they would be dealt with inline with its mandate while those that weren’t in its confines, would be dealt with by other relevant authorities.

The commission said that it has on several occasions censured erring political parties and individuals.

“I want to mention that we have a set of laws, constitution, and regulations, and we are mandated by their provisions. So whatever we do is provided for. We can not go outside the provisions of the law to address political rallies or interfering with the Police, we are not mandated by any piece of legislation on rallies. During general elections, a Statutory Instrument is issued to the effect that we have taken over, further to that, conflict management committees are set up to address adherence to the campaign timetable where even Police officers are members and such issues can be addressed there,” Said Ms. Zaloumis

But SP Deputy General Secretary Antonio Mwanza contended that the commission actually had provisions that mandate it to reprimand or censure erring political parties that are fond of abrogating the electoral code of conduct.

“…One of the major issues the Electoral Commission of Zambia is raising is that they couldn’t enforce the Electoral Code of Conduct because it was not a joint agreement. Madam Chairperson, to respond to that query, stakeholders came together supporting that the Electoral Code of Conduct must be part and parcel of the Electoral Process Act. And in 2016, there is a new Electrical Process Act No. 35, which includes the Electoral Code of Conduct. My question, Madam Chairperson, is why is the ECZ failing to enforce the Electoral Code of Conduct? Why? I thank you.” Questioned Mr. Mwanza.

Nalumango Says Govt Needs About K23.5 Billion To Address Drought

0

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has received a donation of K1 Million from Stanbic Bank Zambia aimed at addressing the drought situation that the country experienced.

ZANIS reports that speaking when she received the donation, Ms Nalumango disclosed that the government requires about K23.5 Billion to help the 6.6 million people who have been affected by drought.

Ms Nalumango acknowledged the donation as a crucial step in addressing the drought that has severely impacted 84 districts countrywide.

The Vice President emphasized the importance of shared responsibility, stating that such calamities should not be left to the government alone but that it is everyone’s responsibility.

“This generous contribution from Stanbic Bank demonstrates their awareness and commitment to mitigating the effects of low rainfall experienced across the country. The situation is so bad that no food was produced at all.” she said.
Ms Nalumango noted that the government is actively working to build resilience against such disasters, adding the involvement of the private sector and local organisations is crucial.

She pointed out that climate change is a global issue, affecting not just Zambia but also neighboring countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Ms Nalumango stated that while international organizations have pledged support, the local private sector must take a leading role in providing relief and fostering resilience.

“The donation from Stanbic Bank shows kindness, hope, and solidarity to communities in need. Residents affected by the drought are filled with fear and desperation, but contributions like these bring hope for food and water security,” she explained.

Ms Nalumango however noted with concern that the drought has taken a toll on key sectors such as energy and agriculture, leading to an increase in load-shedding hours.

She expressed the government’s commitment to promoting alternative energy sources like solar and gas to reduce dependency on hydroelectric power.

“The government is working tirelessly to find new ways of doing things to ensure resilience against future crises. Government is also aware of the current high cost of living and is working to bring it back to normal,”
Ms Nalumango further urged more entities within the private sector to come forward and assist in the national drought response efforts.

Meanwhile, Stanbic Bank Zambia Chief Executive Officer Mwindwa Siakalima commended the government for their timely declaration of drought as a national disaster. Mr Siakalima said the declaration allows for well-wishers to come in and lend support to cushion the challenges brought about by the drought. He stated that the bank is aware that the toll of the drought has continued to touch every aspect of life, threatening, livelihoods and food security.
Mr Siakalima added that the bank is supporting the measures that are being undertaken by the government which include investing in sustainable solutions.

“Recovery should not be about returning to the status quo, it is an opportunity to reimagine, rebuild and renew,” he said. Mr Siakalima noted that Stanbic Bank embarked on their own initiative in climate change mitigation efforts which include planting and nurturing 20,000 trees at the Zambezi Source in Northwestern Province.
“We are also promoting alternative livelihoods such as bee keeping so that people should reduce the number of trees,” Mr Siakalima said.

He added that financial institutions have also taken the lead in providing solar financing solutions to individuals and organisations by providing incentives such as the credit facilities among others.

Peter Mutharika is increasingly regaining popularity

In our vernacular language, there is an adage that stipulates that ‘chitsime chimaoneka chakuya chikaphwa’.

The contextual translation of this riddle is that most Malawians who despised the leadership of Peter Mutharika in 2020 have now realised that they made a grave mistake to opt for the incumbent President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

The mega political rally held on 12 May 2024 at Njamba Freedom Park and graced by Peter Mutharika smacks of an unforgettable historical event in Malawi politics.

First, it is the first widely publicized political rally since the former President Peter Mutharika challenged his successor, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that public demand coerced APM to stand for presidency in 2025.

Second, as an ardent social media follower, I was overwhelmed that most users of WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter platforms were excited with Njamba Freedom Park’s political rally which was organised by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

In fact, online viewers for DPP Njamba rally was pegged at over three thousand on 360 Times Facebook page signifying that the function was handsomely patronised.

Furthermore, the Njamba Freedom Park itself was flooded with Malawians from all regions and walks of life.

However, there are some counterarguments circulating in the social media platforms that allege that the recent DPP Njamba rally was well patronised because people were ferried in trucks from different districts of the country. Others even further alleged that they were paid just to attend the rally.

Truth must be told that it would require a very wealthy political party to ferry and pay all people who attended the rally. This is highly unlikely.

However, facts on the ground substantiate that some people who were interested to attend the rally but had no means of transport were adequately assisted.

One wonders if a large number of online viewers for the DPP rally were both ferried and heavily paid too.

As a party that is gaining ground, it is not surprising that APM took advantage at this opportune event to welcome new members to DPP such as Dr. Kakhome, Honorable Ghambi, and Dr. Mpofu

In a nutshell, Prof Peter Mutharika audaciously relayed a message of hope to Malawians that a better Malawi is possible regardless of one’s tribe, district of origin and any political affiliation.

At the rally, APM also well articulated that notorious Judases and Pharisees such as Kondwani Nankhumwa and his accomplices who caused havoc in the party were excommunicated from the party. No wonder peace and tranquillity have now flourished in the party.

Peter Mutharika also took his time to inform Malawians on the new leadership positions in the party such as Mrs. Chijere Chirwa as a commissioner in parliament.

Peter Mutharika went further to encourage Members of the party to contest for various positions at the forthcoming elective convention to be held on 21 July 2024.

Furthermore, Peter Mutharika confirmed that he would contest for presidency at both party level and national level. This decision came after consulting his family and of course by public demand.

It is at this juncture that APM assured the nation that he would emerge a victor of 2025 presidential race and on
September 16, 2025, he will go back to Kamuzu palace.

This message did not go down well with the incumbent President Chakwera who later retaliated, at a Kamuzu day function, that President Chakwera is not a one term president.

However, APM already provided many reasons why President Chakwera will lose the grip of power in 2025.

For instance, APM bemoaned on the rising cost of goods and services. He said ‘Zonse zakwera chifukwa cha Chakwera’ to which the mammoth of people responded ‘achoke!!! achoke!!!’. This was the voter who was agitating to oust President Chakwera.

APM reminded Malawians that during 14 years of DPP reign, Kwacha was relatively stable. He cited that in 2020 when APM was leaving office, Kwacha was pegged at MK712 to the American dollar. Four years during Chakwera’s rule, Kwacha is over MK2,000 to the American dollar. For sure, this is a pathetic situation.

In fact, APM cited a biblical message from Daniel 5 v 25 which says “mene, mene, tekel, upharsin”.

Mene means that God has numbered the days of Chakwera reign and brought it to an end. Tekel means that Chakwera’s reign has been weighed and found wanting. Upharsin entails that Chakwera’s reign is divided and given to the DPP and other parties in alliance with it.

APM also accused Chakwera government of promoting selective justice, causing confusion in DPP, inciting political violence, abandoning community technical colleges and masterminding moves to rig elections.

However, despite all the political turbulence, APM assured Malawians that DPP is indestructible.

Finally, APM encouraged party followers to register in large numbers so that they will be eligible to vote in 2025 general elections.

Speaking at the same function, Yeremia Chihana revealed that Aford has endorsed Prof Peter Mutharika for the presidency in 2025. This is another blow to President Chakwera and Tonse Alliance.

In conclusion, a large number of attendees and APM’s well-articulated speech at Njamba Freedom Park are a true testimony that APM is a political threat to the incumbent President Chakwera.

However, I always say that only a voter will decide the victor of 2025 presidential race. Presidential aspirants are therefore advised to strategize their political moves wisely.

ECZ Initiates Political Party Engagements To Address Disputes

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has initiated a series of engagements with different political parties to review and address recurring issues that arise during elections in a bid to find a lasting solution to the misunderstanding.

Speaking during a press briefing shortly after the engagement between the commission and the Socialist Party officials in Lusaka , Electoral Commission of Zambia Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro says it is part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement strategy to address various aspects of the conduct of by- elections with the focus of fostering transparent electoral process.

Mr Kasoro said the issues discussed during the meeting bordered on the code of conduct as it is critical in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

He disclosed that the socialist party was candid in their submission and recognized that the commission’s voice is critical in the electoral process.

“All the deliberations of various aspects in terms of the challenges they face in participating in the electoral process were laid on the table which include violence, issues of non-adherence to campaign timetables, misuse of government resources and other issues and the party did indicate the role that the commission plays in all aspects of the electoral process,” he explained.

The CEO further invited political parties to share their experiences and suggestions on how to improve the electoral process.

And ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis expressed the commission’s willingness to work with political parties to implement measures that will prevent electoral disputes from arising in the future.

Ms Zaloumis said some of the measures include strengthening the Electoral Commission’s dispute resolution mechanism, improving voter education and awareness, and increasing transparency in the electoral process.

She further urged all interested parties including citizens to desist from engaging in violence but instead resolve their differences amicably.

She has since thanked the Socialist party for engaging with the commission.Socialist Party Secretary General, Cosmas Musumali said the party engaged ECZ because they had some grievances that could only be resolved by the commission.
Dr Musumali advised all stakeholders in the political sector to continue discussing and addressing the political issues before the 2026 general elections.

He assured the commission of the party’s continued dialogue and engagement as there are many issues that needed to be addressed in the political arena.

Man who won more than £1.35bn being sued by his family for ‘not sharing winnings’

A Mega Millions jackpot winner is facing a lawsuit from his family for allegedly refusing to share his whopping $1.35billion fortune.

The lucky man, known only as John Doe in court documents, beat the staggering odds of 1 in 302.6 million to bag the $1.35billion jackpot, making it the second-largest Mega Millions win ever and the fourth-largest in US history.

He took home $500million after taxes.

However, drama began when he sued the mother of his daughter, named as Sara Smith in legal papers, accusing her of breaching a non-disclosure agreement by spilling the beans about his win to his family.

However, new court documents suggest it might have been Doe himself who told his family about his winnings.

In the latest twist, Smith’s lawyers argue that Doe told his father and stepmother about his lottery windfall of his own accord, undermining his claim she was the one who revealed his secret.

In a sworn affidavit, Doe’s father revealed that Doe had visited the family home and informed them about his lottery win. In the affidavit, Doe’s father criticises Doe for not keeping his alleged promises to use some if his winnings to help them.

Doe confessed he had spoken to his father and stepmother about the money, and added their relationship deteriorated soon after.

His father hit back, accusing his son of dishonesty on several matters since the huge lottery win.

His statement reads: “In February or March of 2023, my son came to my house in [REDACTED], and told me and my wife that he had won a large sum of money in the Maine State Lottery.

“He promised to build me a garage and buy me some cars to restore. He knew I used to enjoy working on and restoring old cars. He also said he wanted to buy us the house where he lived with me and his mother (my previous wife) when he was a child.

“He said, ‘Find out what they want for it, and I’ll pay double,’ or words to that effect. This is not something my current wife and I wanted to do.”

The father claims his son pledged to establish a $1million trust fund that would provide him with a monthly income and ensure he receives at-home nursing care for the rest of his life.

He stated his son had demanded that neither he nor his stepmother maintain any contact with Smith.

Doe’s father said: “Smith is the mother of our grandchild and we have had a good relationship with her over the years. I thought she was a good mother and we did not want to turn our back on her as he insisted.”

After challenging his son about his altered behaviour, the father revealed his son “became irate, branding me a dictator, and an a**hole”.

Doe’s father added : ”I have not heard from my son since, and he has not fulfilled any of [the] promises he made.”

Chief of Staff leaves Kanye West over plans by rapper to setup p0**rn business

Controversial rapper Kanye West’s Chief of Staff, Milo Yiannopoulos has reportedly left Yeezy Apparel over plans to set up a company that produces pornographic material, amid revelations that many employees have left the company in the last few weeks.

Yiannopoulos, 39, was serving as Yeezy Apparel’s Chief of Staff, but reportedly resigned after West made it clear that he would be going ahead with the launch of a division that creates X-rated entertainment.

In a statement obtained by TMZ, Yiannopoulos said, “I wish Ye every success in the future. I have some concerns about his new team, and hope he proceeds with caution”.

It is unclear who the new team that the far-right commentator was alluding to, with TMZ revealing that several key staffers have exited Yeezy in the past weeks, although their reasons for doing so are unclear.

In his statement, Yiannopoulos said that he did not want to take part in the production of pornographic material as it would impact his own well-being. He, however, did not shut down the door on a possible future return to the company.

“I cannot be complicit in the production or dissemination of pornographic films and literature, for moral and religious reasons, but also because such material and the kind of people invariably involved in its production represent an imminent danger to my life as a recovering addict and an unacceptable risk to my spiritual and physical health as a former homosexual.

“I tender my resignation. I will deliver an orderly handover by Friday, May 31, 2024, or the first pornography shoot, whichever is sooner.

“If, at some time in the future, the company publicly and permanently abandons any plan to produce, distribute, or profit from obscene content, it would be an honour to serve you again,” his statement read.

West has been in contact with porn star Stormy Daniels’ ex-husband Mike Moz, who is a producer in the adult film industry, to serve as the head honcho of his new project, his spokesperson confirmed in April.

The “I Wonder” hitmaker is hoping to have his latest endeavor launched by the summer. Daily Mast

Woman admits to working with neo-Nazis to plan attack on Baltimore’s electrical infrastructure

A woman from Maryland has admitted to working with a neo-Nazi leader from Florida to make a plan to attack the power grid in Baltimore.

Sarah Beth Clendaniel, who is 36 years old and from Catonsville, and her friend Brandon Russell thought that shooting at five electric stations in Baltimore would cause chaos in society. This information was included in a court document when Clendaniel admitted she was guilty.

Judge James Bredar will decide how long Clendaniel will be in trouble on September 3rd.

Clendaniel was accused last year with Russell, who lives in Orlando, Florida and helped start a neo-Nazi group called Atomwaffen Division. Russell admitted to explosives charges and went to prison for five years because he was involved in a deadly shooting at the apartment he shared with Atomwaffen’s other founder.

Clendaniel and Russell started writing letters to each other in 2018 while they were in different prisons. They fell in love and stayed together even after they were out of jail, according to the court documents.

Clendaniel admitted to doing two things wrong: planning to damage electrical facilities and having a gun even though it’s against the law for him to have one. Conspiring can lead to 20 years in prison. Having a gun can lead to 15 years in prison.

Russell used to be in the Florida National Guard and is accused of planning to damage electrical facilities. He is waiting for his trial.

In May 2017, one of Russell’s friends, Devon Arthurs, shot and killed two other friends at their house in Tampa, Florida. The police found Russell at the place, wearing a military outfit and crying because of the news.

Arthurs admitted to killing his roommates because he said they were planning a terrorist attack. Russell didn’t get charged for the killings, but he admitted to collecting explosive materials at the apartment building.

Clendaniel and Russell believed in white supremacy and wanted to cause mass violence to make society fall apart. Both of them talked about their plans to attack the power grid with someone who works for the government in January 2023, prosecutors said.

Swiss court has sentenced a former Gambian minister to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity

0

Victims and their relatives have demonstrated outside the court during the trial
A Swiss court has sentenced a former Gambian minister to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity.

Ousman Sonko fled to Switzerland in 2016, shortly before Gambian President Yahya Jammeh was forced out of power after refusing to admit he had lost elections. His government was accused of numerous rights abuses.

After non-governmental organisations presented evidence of atrocities committed against Mr Jammeh’s political opponents, Sonko was arrested.

Sonko’s lawyers have said he was not responsible for what happened.

Despite this defence, the 55-year-old former interior minister was convicted of intentional homicide, torture and false imprisonment on Wednesday.

He was acquitted of rape.

He can appeal against the ruling, given by the Swiss Federal Criminal Court in the city of Bellinzona.

Switzerland tried the case under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to prosecute people for crimes that took place elsewhere.

Sonko is the highest-ranking government official ever to be prosecuted under this principle in Europe.

Philip Grant, head of the organisation that filed the complaint leading to Sonko’s arrest, said the case sends a “resounding message against impunity”.

“Minister-level perpetrators are now within reach of justice,” the Trial International director added.

Swiss investigators travelled to The Gambia and interviewed dozens of alleged victims and witnesses for the trial, which began in January this year.

Under Mr Jammeh, who was in power from 1996 until 2016, The Gambia was characterised by “widespread abuses, including forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings”, according to Human Rights Watch

Sonko was seen as Mr Jammeh’s right-hand man, his role as interior minister putting him in charge of the security services, including, allegedly, a sinister paramilitary group known as “the Junglers”.

But in 2016, shortly before Mr Jammeh lost power, Sonko fled to Switzerland, where he claimed asylum.

In January 2017, he was arrested by authorities there.

Along with Switzerland, other countries are bringing cases against former members of Mr Jammeh’s regime.

In October, Germany handed a life sentence for crimes against humanity to Bai Lowe, a one-time member of “the Junglers”.

And in September this year, a court in the US state of Colorado will try an alleged former member of the same group.

Although The Gambia has created its own transitional justice process to address abuses committed under Mr Jammeh’s rule, human rights groups say its work has so far been very slow.- africanews

Biden administration proceeds with Israel’s $1 billion military purchase

The Biden government is giving Israel over US$1 billion in new weapons and bullets. Three congressional workers said this on Tuesday.

This is the first time the government has said it will send weapons to Israel since it delayed sending 3,500 bombs earlier this month. The government stopped the transfer to prevent Israel from using the bombs in their attack on Rafah in southern Gaza.

The White House is getting criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for helping Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza. Some people in Joe Biden’s political party want him to stop sending weapons to Israel until they do more to protect Palestinians. Many Republicans disapprove of reducing the support for the military of Israel.

The package being sent has about $700 million for tank bullets, $500 million for military vehicles, and $60 million for mortar rounds, according to congressional aides. They talked but didn’t want to say who they are, about giving weapons to someone, but it’s not official yet.

It was not clear when the arms would be sent. It’s not certain if this delivery is from the delayed foreign aid package, an existing arms sale, or a new sale.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the plans to move the package.

House Republicans were planning to pass a bill this week that would make sure Israel gets the weapons they need. After Biden stopped sending bombs last week, the Republicans quickly criticized it. They said it shows that the US is leaving its closest ally in the Middle East.

The White House said on Tuesday that Biden would not approve the bill if Congress passed it. The bill is not likely to pass in the Senate where the Democrats are in charge. However, not all House Democrats agree on this, and about twenty-four of them wrote a letter to the Biden administration expressing their worries about stopping the bomb shipment.

One of the people who signed the letter was a representative from New York. Ritchie Torres said he will probably vote for the bill, even though the White House doesn’t support it.

“I usually support laws that help Israel, but if it hurts other important laws, I might not. ”

The White House has been telling different lawmakers and their assistants that they will not approve the new law.

“We really disagree with trying to limit the President from using US security help in line with US foreign policy and national security goals,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre this week. She also said the administration intends to use all the money Congress approved in the national security supplemental package signed into law by Biden last month.

17-year-old teen bags doctoral degree after defending dissertation successfully

0

A Chicago teenager participated in her graduation ceremony this month, having achieved her doctoral degree at the age of 17.

Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II embarked on her academic journey at the age of 10 as a freshman at the College of Lake County, where she majored in Psychology. By 2020, she had obtained her Master of Science degree from Unity College.

At the age of 15 in 2021, Tillman was accepted into the Doctor of Behavioral Health Management Program at Arizona State University.

Reflecting on her achievements with “Good Morning America,” Tillman attributed her deep appreciation for education in part to her family’s background.

“People in my life like my grandmother, who was part of the Civil Rights Movement, she of course harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always,” Tillman said.

“But the way I always held education so high on my own, aside from being raised that way was finding different things to be educated about it doesn’t just have to be all of the subjects that they teach you in school there’s so many things in the world to learn about that we wish we knew about,” she said. “I feel like that urge to learn something new just never didn’t exist for me.”

Tillman said, growing up, she had always felt drawn towards psychology and related fields.

“They’ve always made me so curious,” she said. “And so grinding away, I could continue to study in that area. With even more that was attached to it. It was just really intriguing to me.”

In December 2023, at the age of 17, Tillman successfully defended her dissertation, earning a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from ASU’s College of Health Solutions. On May 6, she participated in ASU’s commencement ceremonies.

Before the big day, Tillman expressed her excitement to “GMA,” feeling just as thrilled as any other student.

“I love having a reason to celebrate and throw a big soirée,” she said. “Just that walk, and especially with people I haven’t been there, seeing every day, since my program is online, it’s just gonna feel really fulfilling to finish.”

Dr. Leslie Manson, a clinical associate professor at ASU, told “GMA” that Tillman is the youngest person in school history to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health.

“It’s a wonderful celebration, and we hope … that Dorothy Jean inspires more students,” Manson said, adding of Tillman, “But this is still something so rare and unique.”

Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II officially walked at her graduation ceremony in May.

Throughout Tillman’s time at ASU, Mason said she saw her growth in gaining the skills of professional writing as well as leadership, noting that Tillman is “inquisitive” and “intelligent.”

“She has innovative ideas and motivation, which is wonderful,” Mason explained. “And truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader.”

Mason added that “other students can really learn the piece of dedication” from Tillman.
“So that motivating energy, those are the pieces that I think other folks can really turn to and feel inspired about,” she said. “That curiosity is always there. And I think all learners come with that. But it’s great to be able to see it in someone so young as well.”

Her inspiration and how she gives back to the community

Tillman’s journey to success wouldn’t be made possible without the support from her mom whom she said is one of her biggest motivators.
Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II was only 10 when she became a freshman at the college of Lake County

Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II was only 10 when she became a freshman at the College of Lake County, majoring in Psychology.

“Seeing my mother consistently worked so hard to continuously uphold our family’s legacy, and be that person that everyone was able to go to if they needed anything… Always seeing [her] like [a] ‘Wonder Woman’ definitely made me want to grow up [into] an accomplished person,” she said.

A proponent of education, Tillman serves as the founder and CEO of the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. Through this institute, she organizes programs such as summer camps aimed at assisting children in achieving a balance between arts and STEM subjects.

“I feel like adding art and putting a focus on it throughout science, technology, engineering, and math, makes the kids excited to learn all those things,” she said. “And it opens them up to all of the possibilities and all the knowledge provided in that area of just STEM.”

FIFA aims to pave the way for La Liga, Premier League matches in the US

FIFA is moving towards ending decades of football tradition by reviewing the rules that prevent domestic league games from being played in other countries.

However, fans may object to their teams’ home matches potentially being moved thousands of miles away.

The United States and Saudi Arabia are expected to be interested in hosting competitive games from top European leagues.

FIFA recently agreed to withdraw from an ongoing court case in New York, filed by promoter Relevent, which challenged the current policy.

In April, Spanish league president Javier Tebas expressed hope that La Liga would soon be able to play games overseas.

“I don’t know when, but this time LaLiga will play official games abroad. I think it could be from the 2025–26 season,” Tebas told Expansión.

“An official game in the United States would strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second [biggest] for La Liga after Spain.

“Other really competitive leagues are coming, so we can’t always do the same thing. They would jump ahead of us.”

The new FIFA policy is likely to appeal to the growing number of international owners of European clubs, including the wave of U.S. investors in the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A, and France’s Ligue 1, as well as state-backed teams like Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City, Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain, and Saudi-owned Newcastle United.

FIFA is forming a panel of 10-15 representatives from various football stakeholders to advise on amending the rules regarding “out-of-territory” games within the next few months.

These rules were last updated in 2014.

Previous attempts to hold European League games abroad, such as taking Barcelona to Miami in 2019, were blocked. U.S. promoters are seeking to offer fans more than just preseason exhibition games featuring the world’s best club teams.

FIFA directed its working group, which is yet to be appointed, to consider fairness and give “advance notice to fans who may miss the opportunity to attend a home or away match in the home territory.”

Other factors for the FIFA panel include “respect for the recognised structure of international football” and potential disruption to fans, teams and leagues in the country hosting “out-of-territory” games.

Usher Reveals Lauryn Hill’s ‘Miseducation’ Inspired ‘Confessions’

Usher’s iconic album “Confessions” recently secured a spot at No. 95 on Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Usher delved into the album’s essence, shedding light on its profound inspiration.

Reflecting on the journey, Usher acknowledged how “Confessions” provided a platform for introspection and accountability, particularly regarding themes of infidelity. He confessed, “It was a humanizing experience… the opportunity to be honest about it.”

Inspiration often arises from unexpected sources. For Usher, it was Lauryn Hill’s album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” He believes the album served as a catalyst for tapping into raw vulnerability. He credited Hill’s album for igniting a deeper level of emotional expression in his own work.

“I listened to that album a lot and thought about the honesty that was in it, the vulnerability that was in that album, and being able to now have my shot at it because people know this much about me. They know I’m an entertainer. They know that I want to please them with entertainment, but they don’t know about me,” said the 45-year-old.

Beyond personal revelation, Usher recognized “Confessions” as a pivotal moment for men to confront and articulate their emotions authentically. In a society where avenues for emotional expression are often limited, the album provided a rare space for candid dialogue among men.

Addressing the societal norms that inhibit emotional openness among men, Usher noted, “Men don’t necessarily always have an outlet. We’re not really comfortable speaking to a therapist in that way, and if we’ve gotten to the place where we can be honest,” he explained. “We let it out in private quarters and there were not really a lot of spaces and things or moments where we could kind of make that connection in this way.”

He emphasized the significance of cultural touchstones like “Confessions” in fostering meaningful connections and dialogue.

Originally slated to perform “Confessions” in its entirety at the Lovers & Friends Fest, Usher’s plans were thwarted by the event’s cancellation. The future of the performance remains uncertain, leaving fans eager for a potential rescheduling.

21 SAVAGE EXPLAINS GRUESOME BACKSTORY BEHIND FACE SCAR

21 Savage has shared the savage story behind how he got his infamous face scar, and the cause was a tragic accident that could have been a lot worse than what it was.

“When I was young, I had gotten into a fight, and I had gold teeth,” he explained in his Instagram Live on Tuesday (May 14). “N-gga hit me in my sh-t right here [points to the side of his face]. And my goddamn lip got caught on my teeth. I had a hole right here.”

He continued: “That’s why I got this scar. That n-gga was way bigger than me. I was probably, like, 14.”

In the same Instagram Live, 21 Savage made clear that he said all he needed to say about the controversy between himself and Soulja Boy.

Soulja launched into a vicious rant against the Slaughter Gang boss on Sunday (May 12) after he defended his close collaborator Metro Boomin from a similar online attack.

In response to Big Draco calling out Metro over a shady tweet from over a decade ago and giving him 24 hours to delete it, Savage wrote in an Instagram comment: “Or what.”

That led to Soulja setting his sights on the Atlanta rap star on Instagram Live, during which he made violent threats and questioned his street credibility.

“Set the fight up, bitch-ass n-gga! I will beat the fuck out you, 21!” he snarled. “You’s a bitch, n-gga. You want to take it to the streets? I will smoke you. Fuck you talking about, n-gga?

“I really was in the streets. You ain’t even from Atlanta. You think I’ma let a pussy-ass n-gga from Britain talk to me crazy? You lame as fuck, n-gga […] Take your pussy ass back to Britain, bitch.”

21 Savage later hit back on X (formerly Twitter) and began by defending his transatlantic background.

“I been in Atlanta since 1st grade lost my virginity there got shot there in and out of juvenile there and I went from the hospital in London straight to the projects yall think London is rodeo dr lol,” he wrote.

He then called Soulja Boy’s own ties to Atlanta into question and accused him of being a “crackhead.”

“Big Soulja from Mississippi nobody on Simpson know him. boy ain’t been to Atlanta since 2001,” he wrote. “Cocaine is a hell of a drug. crackhead ass n-gga went to jail for having bullets. I aint even know they had a bullet charge.”

21 also posted a screenshot of a news article suggesting that Soulja’s finances were in the red after he was forced to settle his debts by a judge.

“Yall j ass n-ggas better find somebody to play with air bnb living ass lil boy sit yo musty ass down somewhere don’t nobody buy ringtones no more,” he added.

The Savage Mode star also took issue with Soulja Boy wishing Metro a happy Mother’s Day, which was an obvious taunt over the death of his mom.

“Speaking on a n-gga mama like shit a game you gone shit on yourself when I see you boy,” he concluded.

Biden challenges Trump to presidential election debates but only on his terms

US President Joe Biden said Wednesday, May 15, he is willing to debate former US President Donald Trump in a pair of face-to-face showdowns ahead of the election – but only if his rival agrees to his strict terms

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and now he wants to debate me again,” Biden said in the fiery early-morning video posted on his personal X account.

“Well, make my day pal,” added the 81-year-old president.

In a letter obtained by The Post, the Biden camp ruled out allowing the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates to organize the events, which it has done since the 1988 election cycle.

Instead of three presidential debates scheduled by the CPD for Sept. 16, Oct. 1, and Oct. 9, Biden wants to face off with Trump on a more compressed schedule with the first debate held as early as June, campaign chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon wrote.

“I hear you’re free on Wednesdays,” Biden chided in the video, referring to Trump’s ongoing criminal trial in New York, which is on recess Wednesdays.

The second debate was proposed for early September, “early enough to influence early voting, but not so late as to require the candidates to leave the campaign trail in the critical late September and October period,” O’Malley Dillon explained in the letter, which was first reported by the New York Times.

The Biden team also asked for the debates to be staged inside a television studio with microphones that automatically cut out when the speaker’s time elapses and no live audience.

The proposed debates would also exclude Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and any other third-party candidates. The CPD would allow additional candidates to take the stage if they reached a minimum of 15% in polling and were on enough state ballots.

Trump responded to Biden’s challenge in a Truth Social post, saying he was “ready and willing” to debate him.

“Crooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced – He can’t put two sentences together! Crooked is also the WORST President in the history of the United States, by far. It’s time for a debate so that he can explain to the American People his highly destructive Open Border Policy, new and ridiculous EV Mandates, the allowance of Crushing Inflation, High Taxes, and his really WEAK Foreign Policy, which is allowing the World to ‘Catch on Fire,” he wrote.

The Trump campaign had long asked Biden to commit to debates earlier in the 2024 cycle.

Russia claims to have shot down ten US missiles as Crimea Blinken visits Kiev

Russia’s Defense Ministry has said that, they used their weapons to destroy 10 missiles that were made in the US and were headed for Crimea. This happened on Wednesday while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Kyiv.

The government said that 10 missiles from Ukraine, given to them by the US, were destroyed over the Black Sea near Crimea.

Sevastopol leader Mikhail Razvozhayev said that their air defenses stopped Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and near the Belbek air base. The parts of the missiles that were shot down fell into neighborhoods where people live, but no one was hurt, Razvozhayev said.

The Defense Ministry announced that Russian air defenses shot down nine Ukrainian drones, two Vilha rockets, two anti-radar HARM missiles and two Hammer guided bombs over the Belgorod region on Wednesday. Belgorod Governor Vuacheslav Gladkov said that two people got hurt in the village of Dubovoye when a rocket from Ukraine caused their house to catch on fire.

The military reported that five Ukrainian drones were knocked down in the Kursk region and three drones were shot down in the Bryansk region.

The Defense Ministry also said that a drone from Ukraine was shot down over the Tatarstan region. Tatarstan is more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) to the east of the Ukraine border.

Vasily Golubev, who is in charge of Rostov region, said that two small flying machines attacked a place where fuel is stored. He said no one got hurt and there was no fire.

Ukraine has been using drones to attack oil refineries and fuel depots in Russia for several months, and it has caused a lot of damage.

The Ukrainian attacks happened when Russian soldiers were attacking northeast Ukraine. This was the biggest attack on the border since the invasion started.

In the past two days, Moscow has taken over an area of land that’s about 100 to 125 square kilometers (38 to 47 square miles). This includes seven villages, most of which are already empty. This information comes from two experts who keep track of the fighting using public sources.

Blinken came to Ukraine to support and encourage them during the new Russian attack. He told them that they have support from the United States and will soon receive military help that will make a big difference in the fighting.

Slovakia’s prime minister in critical condition after being shot

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico got hurt in a shooting after a political event on Wednesday. His condition is very serious and life-threatening. This information was shared on his Facebook page.

News from a Slovakian TV station called TA3 said Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is 59 years old, was shot in the stomach four times outside the House of Culture in a town called Handlova, which is 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of the capital city. He was meeting with his supporters when the shooting happened. They caught a suspect, it was reported.

A message on Fico’s Facebook said that the leader was shot many times and is in critical condition. Right now, he is being taken by helicopter to Banska Bystrica because it would take too long to get to Bratislava for an urgent procedure. The next couple of hours will make the decision.

The shooting in Slovakia happened three weeks before important European Parliament elections. Populist and hard-right parties in the 27-country bloc are expected to do well in the elections.

Lubos Blaha, the deputy speaker of parliament, said that an incident happened during a meeting in Slovakia’s Parliament, so they stopped the meeting for now. This was reported by the Slovak TASR news agency.

Slovakia’s main opposition parties, Progressive Slovakia and Freedom and Solidarity, called off a protest against a government plan to change public broadcasting. They think the plan would let the government have total control over public radio and TV.

“We are completely against violence and strongly condemn the shooting of Premier Robert Fico today,” said Michal Simecka, leader of Progressive Slovakia. “We ask all politicians to avoid saying or doing things that could make the situation more tense. ”

President Zuzana Caputova criticized a very violent and cruel attack on the prime minister.

“I can’t believe it,” Caputova said. I hope Robert Fico feels better soon and gets through this tough time with strength.

Fico, who is the prime minister for the third time, and his left-leaning Smer party, won the September election in Slovakia. 30 elections will happen and a political party is making a comeback by talking about supporting Russia and not liking America.

Critics were concerned that Slovakia under Fico would stop supporting Western countries and start following the same path as Hungary under their popular Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Many people have gathered in the capital and all over Slovakia to protest against Fico’s policies.

Leaders in Europe spoke out against political violence, but it wasn’t known why the attack happened yet.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, criticized a very bad attack.

“Violence like this has no place in our society and it goes against democracy, which is very important for all of us,” von der Leyen said in a message on X.

The Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, said the incident was very surprising and he hopes the leader gets better soon. We don’t like violence, there’s no room for it in society. The Czech Republic and Slovakia were together as Czechoslovakia until 1992.

The leader of Poland, Donald Tusk, wrote on social media X that he was surprised by the news from Slovakia. Robert, I am thinking of you during this tough time.

MOB CHANTS ALEBWELELAPO AT COURT…As Esther Lungu’s Case Fails To Take Off

MOB CHANTS ALEBWELELAPO AT COURT

…As Esther Lungu’s Case Fails To Take Off

A group of Youths at Court surrounded former First Lady Esther Lungu and chanted slogans “ALEBWELELAPO”

But President Hakainde Hichilema who always seem disgusted with the slogan “alebwelelapo” has vowed that there is no kubwelelapo (no coming back.

The alebwelelapo translates that former president Edgar Lungu is bouncing back to power. The slogan was used in 2021 in an election Lungu suffered a humiliation defeat to his opposition political rival Hakainde Hichilema who is now President of Zambia.

The alebwelelapo seems to be gaining momentum wherever Lungu appears in public with people complaining of hunger and unfulfilled campaign promises by President Hichilema that has seen cost of living prices tripled.

The court has been the most used place for campaign messages for the opposition when they appear since the Hichilema regime has banned campaign rallies.

Taonga Tembo who was at the Magistrate court in Lusaka reports that a group of youths surrounded Lungu’s vehicle as he and others, who had accompanied his wife were leaving the court premises, chanting ‘abwelelepo’.

But President Hichilema who always seem disgusted with the slogan “alebwelelapo” has vowed that there is no kubwelelapo (no coming back.

President Hichilema says he and Zambians will not allow those brutalized Citizens and destroyed the economy to come back. He says Zambians are now enjoying peace and having free education. He says such a move would be taking the country backwards.

He says former president Lungu and his PF destroyed the economy and is the reason Zambians are suffering today.

The former First Lady’s case failed to proceed. This is in trail in the matter in which she and five others are charged with theft as the witness on the stand was unwell and unable to appear in court.

Esther is jointly charged with James Phiri and Lee Chisulo, both police officers, along with Kapambwe Lungu and Lungu’s niece Catherine Banda, for the theft of a motor vehicle.

When the matter came up for continued cross-examination of the first state witness, Elizabeth Phiri, before Magistrate Mbuywana Sinvula yesterday, State Advocate Sipholiano Phiri made an application for an adjournment as the witness was unwell.

Esther has complained and denies all allegations including those facing her family saying it is all persecution by the Hichilema administration.

HH PUSHES BAD LAW TO PROTECT SEED GROWERS, AND OUTLAW TRADITIONAL SEED VARIETIES- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

HH PUSHES BAD LAW TO PROTECT SEED GROWERS, AND OUTLAW TRADITIONAL SEED VARIETIES

A law to protect giant agribusiness and seed growers like Monsanto is underway.

The draft law designed to repeal the Plant Breeder’s Rights Act, 2007
(Act No. 18 of 2007) will create the Seed Control and Certification Institute and will outlaw unregistered varieties, such as traditional seeds, from being planted in Zambia.

Further the law will protect, guarantee and secure the rights of plant breeders.

Plant breeders are basically genetic engineers and their main objective is to improve crops by utilizing different breeding techniques.

But leading seed company Monsanto has been sued several times for selling GMO strains to poorer countries, but ultimately the quality of the crop was less, meaning the farmers actually ended up losing money by switching to the Montsanto strain rather than making money.

Further the farmers were tied to use the seeds than any other breed.

You don’t have to be a farmer to see the harm and monopoly that this law will create in Zambia.

He who controls your food, controls you. If you can’t grow what you eat, you become a slave to whoever grows the foods..the grower depends on the seeds.

Growing seeds will become a singular and monopolistic undertaking to control the value chain.

Dad had a long list of children outside marriage, Shikapwasha’s daughter tells court

Dad had a long list of children outside marriage, Shikapwasha’s daughter tells court

DAUGHTER of late Lt General Ronnie Shikapwasha has told the Lusaka High Court that her father had a long list of children outside his infidelity-punctuated marriage to Jane Lusengo.

Vanessa Shikapwasha disclosed that Lusengo is her step mom as her real parents are the late former ZAF commander Lieutenant General Shikapwasha and Doreen Kabinga.

The 38-year old also refuted assertions by medical personnel that her father shot herself as she was ignorant about the his alleged statement regarding the incident.

In this matter 73- year old Lusengo is charged with murder.

It is alleged that Lusengo ended the retired soldier’s life on January 15, 2024 with a double barrel shotgun during a marital dispute.

During cross examination before judge Conceptor Chinyanwa Zulu, Vanessa said she discovered that Lt general Shikapwasha was her father at a tender age and she started living with the couple at the age of 16 few months before she got wedded.

She said she went back to her father’s house in Ibex Hill in 2018 after her husband’s demise and she later packed out to live on her own.

“I went back in 2022 when Milika told me mum (Lusengo) and dad were having problems,” she said.

When asked by defense lawyer Francis Mulenga jr if she was born to another woman during the subsistence of her father and Lusengo’s marriage, the witness confirmed.

When quizzed about the number of children that the former minister of home affairs had children outside marriage, Vanessa said they were more than five but could not mention them there and then as the list was too long.

Mulenga asked Vanessa if the general had committed adultery by having countless illegitimate offspring during the subsistence of his marriage to Lusengo, but deputy Chief State advocate Chipola Bako curtailed the witness from answering the question on reasons that she couldn’t tell how other children were born.

He said Vanessa could only speak to the shooting incident as a witness of fact and not to answer questions relating to her late father’s ‘infidelity’.

Bako’s objection to Mulenga’s line of inquiry was sustained by Judge Zulu.

Vanessa said general Shikapwasha and Lusengo started arguing in their old age and her father had evicted her from their matrimonial home on three occasions but would always bring her back whenever he sent her packing.

The 38-year old said after the shooting incident Lusengo did not scream neither was she unsettled.

“She wasn’t screaming after the shooting I could just hear her talking in the passage, she was not in distress. I ran after her because she took a quick walk right after we discussed. I had to catch her,” Vanessa said.

She confirmed that the lenje word ‘wanchaisha’ could mean causing someone to injure themselves.

When asked if she was aware that General Shikapwasha had told a physician that he had shot himself on the material day, Vanessa responded in the negative.

She said Lusengo was not part of the prayer session that was conducted at the crime scene.

“Mum was not praying with aunt Daka and myself she was pacing up and down in the bedroom,” Vanessa said.

When cross examined by Gilbert Lindani, Vanessa confirmed that the details she gave to the police and the court regarding the incident were at variance.

She conceded that the statement regarding the infidelity accusations made by her father before his death ‘Wabona Jane wanchaya abuhule bwako’ were not recorded in the police statement.

Lindani read out an excerpt of Mainasoko military Commandant Levy Muchemwa’s interview with the Zambia Daily Mail were the medical personnel disclosed that general Shikapwasha had told him that he pulled the trigger on himself.

“I asked him if he was attacked and he responded that his gun fired on him,” the excerpt read.

However Vanessa said she was not aware about her father’s explanation about the occurrence of shooting.

Vanessa maintained that Lusengo told her that she did not know whether she had shot her father or not when she asked her what transpired.

Cross examination continues on May 21.

BROKE LUSAMBO DISAPPOINTS HUNGRY PF CADRES

BROKE LUSAMBO DISAPPOINTS HUNGRY PF CADRES

PATRIOTIC Front cadres who were accustomed to receiving colossal cash handouts from ministers and high ranking party officials were yesterday left disappointed when the once wealthy and generous Bowman Lusambo failed to give them even a coin.

The cadres waylayed the former Lusaka Province minister at the Lusaka Magistrates Court where he was appearing in a case of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime and jointly charged with his wife Nancy Manaseh for concealing four ‘dubiously’ acquired houses.

As soon as the Lusambos emerged in the corridors of the court, the cadres broke into praise of the former PF Kabushi Constituency member of parliament calling him “Boss wa bonse”.

During the PF time in power, such acts of praise from cadres did not go unrewarded, especially from Lusambo himself. Cadres usually made away with several K100 notes.

But it was just not quite the case yesterday.

After seeing that despite pumping the volume notes of their voices in praise of Lusambo, he was not reaching out for his pockets until some of them took the initiative of reminding him of what he needed to do in such instances.

“Boss wabonse insala! shaniko iya bunga (boss we are hungry won’t you give us any amount for mealie meal),” one the cadres asked before others joined in.

Upon hearing the foot ‘soldiers’ crying that they were hungry, all Lusambo could do was ask if they had missed his benevolence to which they responded in the affirmative

“Mwamfuluka te? (You miss my acts of charity?),” Lusambo asked “E ye boss (yes boss) they respond.

The carders escorted Lusambo to his car hoping that he would give them some money but the Bulldozer left them in the lurch as he had also reduced his comfort standards.

Lusambo and his wife did not use their luxurious cars as per tradition, they left court in different basic cars. Nancy used a black Toyota Auris while Lusambo drove his small black car.

The stranded cadres that remained were heard complaining and encouraging each other to work and vigourously campaign for the return of the former president Edgar Lungu and his team so they could resume ‘eating’.

Earlier in court before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu, businessman Lombe Bwalya said he sold a piece of land to Lusambo at K40, 000.

And a representative of BEM motors said Lusambo did not engage in a transaction with their boss Mbachi Nkwazi for the conveyance of property in his name.

This is in a matter where Lusambo is facing 10
corruption-related charges before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court; among them one count of corrupt acquisition of public property, five counts of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime, three counts of tax evasion and one count of conspiracy to defraud.

He is jointly charged with his wife Nancy Manase for possessing four houses in Silverest Gardens, Chongwe, which were suspected to be procceds of crime.

Trial continues today.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva Statement to the Financial Community on Zambia

Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement about Zambia to Members of the Financial Community:

“The Zambian authorities have been implementing an ambitious economic reform program supported by the IMF, which aims to restore fiscal and debt sustainability, create fiscal space for much-needed social spending, and strengthen economic governance and transparency. Zambia’s economic reform program is supported by an SDR 978.2 million (about US$1.3 billion), 38-month Extended Credit Facility arrangement, approved by the IMF’s Executive Board on August 31, 2022, and by assistance from multilateral and bilateral institutions. In October 2023, complementing the broader reform agenda, Zambia agreed on a memorandum of understanding with the Official Creditors Committee (OCC) under the Group of Twenty (G20) Common Framework that would deliver a debt treatment by official creditors aimed at restoring debt sustainability consistent with IMF program parameters.

“Building on this progress, and following several months of constructive discussions, the agreement reached between the Zambian authorities and the Steering Committee of the Ad Hoc Creditor Committee of holders of Zambia’s Eurobonds marks a significant step forward. The terms of this agreement have been assessed by the Fund staff as being in line with the parameters of the IMF-supported program taking into account the confirmation by the OCC to the IMF and to the Authorities that the agreed terms are consistent with the comparability of treatment among creditors. Together with the full implementation of the IMF-supported program, the successful implementation of this agreement will provide significant external debt service relief and further contribute to Zambia’s efforts to restore debt sustainability.

“To capitalize on this momentum, rapid completion of the debt operation with high participation would be vital for the success of the program. In parallel, the authorities continue to advance discussions with other external private creditors on a comparable treatment. This collective effort is key to supporting the success of Zambia’s debt restructuring efforts under the G20 Common Framework.

“The Zambian authorities are aware of the challenges ahead and have reaffirmed their determination to persevere with their reform agenda and put the economy on a path of sustained and high growth. The continued support from international financial institutions and other official creditors, together with the participation of bondholders in the proposed bond exchange, is necessary to underpin the success of these reform efforts.”

Pamberi Ne ZANU PF”: Mai Titi Hits Back At Criticism Over Her Picture With President Mnangagwa

Socialite and comedian Mai Titi has hit back at people who criticised her for visiting and posing for pictures with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Young Woman For ED
Mai Titi, born Felistas Murata, is a member of the ZANU PF-affiliated group Young Women for ED. Recently, she had an opportunity to meet President Mnangagwa, who is the First secretary of the ruling party.

In the viral picture, she looked elegant, glamorously primped up, and donning the blue national attire. She had a crispy white blouse and a national fabric blue skirt that matched with a headgear.

Mai Titi was kneeling in obeisance beside President Mnangagwa with her hands clasped together respectfully. The bespectacled President, clad in a blue blazer, khaki pants and the trademark scarf, was saying something to Mai Titi, who listened attentively.

The picture elicited unsavoury comments online, as some accused her of selling out for pieces of silver.

Jet-Set Romance: Two Young Nigerian Men Propose To American Sugar Mamas At An Airport

0

Two young Nigerian men have caused a rave after proposing to their smitten American sugar mamas at the airport.

The spectacle happened at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, in Nigeria.

The Rise Of Foreign Transactional Relationships
There has been a growing trend involving older women, typically from Europe or North America, travelling to Africa, particularly Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, to engage in romantic relationships with younger men, often decades their junior.

The rise of social media and dating apps has facilitated these connections, with platforms like Tinder, Bumble, and Facebook enabling women to connect with younger men in Africa.

The women, often in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, usually seek companionship, excitement, and adventure. They may be divorced, widowed, or simply seeking a new experience. The younger men, often in their 20s or 30s, are attracted to the financial security, travel opportunities, and cultural exchange these relationships offer.

Many of these relationships are transactional, with the older women providing financial support, gifts, and travel opportunities in exchange for companionship and intimacy. Some women are drawn to African culture and see these relationships as a way to experience it firsthand.

Two young Nigerian men recently caused a stir at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. They met two sugar mamas online from the United States. Their romance sparked, and they fell in love virtually.

After a while, their older lovers flew in from the US, and when they touched down in Lagos, the two lovers fell on their knees to ask for their hands in marriage. The two smitten sugar mamas couldn’t help but blush and say yes. The men then put on the rings on their fingers as a crowd watched in amusement.

Netizens Speak Over The Marriage Proposal Between Two Young Nigerian Men And Their American Sugar Mamas

Social media users expressed mixed sentiments about these interesting relationships.

Salty

“Tell me that’s not real?😂 Those dudes can’t be that desperate to get to America!!”

John:

“These aren’t “sugar mommas”. These are lonely older women who are being scammed into a fraudulent marriage for an immigration benefit.”

Trader:

“Good to know I have options.”

Cameron:

“Then they’re going to divorce them immediately after getting citizenship in America.”

Passage of controversial “foreign influence” bill in Georgia sets off weeks of protests

The Georgian government approved a controversial bill in its last reading on Tuesday. The bill caused weeks of large protests because people are worried it could harm democratic freedoms and Georgia’s goal of joining the European Union.

The law says that if media and nonprofit groups get more than 20% of their money from another country, they have to register as working for that country’s interests.

The government says the bill is needed to stop bad foreign influence in the country’s politics and to stop foreign actors from trying to make it unstable.

The opponents have called the bill “the Russian law” because it is similar to laws in Russia that are used to control independent news media, non-profit organizations, and activists who speak out against the government.

Big protests against the law happened in the South Caucasus country with 3.7 million people.

European Council President Charles Michel talked about Georgia at a conference on democracy in Copenhagen. He said that if Georgia wants to join the EU, they need to follow the basic rules of law and democracy.

The bill is almost the same as one that the ruling Georgian Dream party had to take back last year because of protests on the street. Protests have been happening in Georgia for weeks. People are fighting with the police, and the police are using tear gas and water guns to break up the crowds.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili is not getting along with the governing party. She said she will stop the law, but the Georgian Dream party has enough power to ignore her and make the law anyway.

On Tuesday, the lawmakers talked about a new law. Outside the parliament, a big group of people protested against the law. There were a lot of police there to keep things safe. During the weekend, many people went to the streets of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Some of them stayed in front of the parliament until Monday morning.

A fight broke out during a discussion in the parliament. Georgian Dream politician Dimitry Samkharadze moved quickly toward Levan Khabeishvili, the leader of the main opposition party United National Movement, after Khabeishvili said he was organizing groups to attack opposition followers.

In the past few days, many people who disagree with the government have been attacked and hurt. The opposition said the incidents were related to the protests.

Another lawmaker from the ruling party in Georgia, Archil Talakvadze, said in his speech on Tuesday that the opposition is using the protests for their own political gain and hoping for things to get more extreme. He also accused them of being against the country.

“Nothing and no one can stop our country from growing,” Talakvadze said.

Ana Tsitlidze, from the United National Movement, said the protests showed that Georgia is strong and united in its fight for a European future. She also said that by saying no to the Russian law, we are also saying no to the Russian government.

After talking about it, 84 out of 116 people at the meeting on Tuesday liked the law, and 30 didn’t. It will now be sent to Zourabichvili, who is the president, and she has 14 days to decide whether to say yes or no to it.

Mississippi passes bill prohibiting transgender individuals from using restrooms

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed a new law about where transgender people can use the bathroom, locker rooms, and dorms in public schools. This makes Mississippi the 12th state to restrict transgender students from using facilities that match their gender identity.

Reeves didn’t like a rule that stops transgender students from using the school bathroom that matches their gender. Republican lawyers from Mississippi and a few other states are questioning the federal rules.

“It’s amazing to see that this is what America has become under Joe Biden,” Reeves wrote on social media. A few years ago, it was hard to believe that we would have to make rules to protect women’s spaces. But now we are here. We need to make a rule to keep women safe in places like bathrooms, sororities, locker rooms, dressing rooms, shower rooms, and other places.

The law says that all public schools in the state need to have bathrooms and living areas for boys and girls. They also need to have a bathroom and living area that anyone can use, no matter their gender.

The new law says that people can only use spaces that match the sex they were born as, even if they look different or have had surgeries to change their gender. Anyone who breaks the rules might get sued, but schools, colleges and universities will not be held responsible.

It says that people are male or female based on their biological characteristics at birth, regardless of how they feel or identify.

Democrats said that the new rules for bathrooms and other places could be dangerous for transgender people during a discussion in the government. They also said that Republicans should not have focused on this issue because there were other things they needed to finish first.

In 2021, Reeves passed a law to stop transgender athletes from playing on girls’ or women’s sports teams. Last year, he made a law to stop young people under 18 from getting hormone treatment or surgery to change their gender.

Lawmakers in Mississippi are thinking about some new rules in the government. They are part of a bigger effort by Republicans to make it harder for transgender people to get the medical care and use the facilities they need.

South Africans Correct the Blunder

While some individuals diligently tagged their favourite comedians, some South Africans took exception to Nick Cannon’s mention of cities within South Africa and not the country itself. They politely corrected Cannon, highlighting that Cape Town and Johannesburg are cities within South Africa, not separate countries. Here are a few comments:

@AMG_Owner:

I don’t know if South Africa will have a good representation because the entire country struggles to express themselves in English. Only Trevor Noah and Eugene Khoza can… You might have to exclude South Africa bro 🙅‍♂️🙅‍♂️🙅‍♂️

Kamala Harris uses profanity in live White House broadcast

The US Vice-President Kamala Harris used profanity on Monday while giving advice to young Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders about how to overcome challenges.

Harris was talking with actor and comedian Jimmy O Yang when he asked her what it’s like to be the first vice president of Asian descent and how her heritage affects her as a leader. Harris’ mom was from India, her dad was from Jamaica, and she’s the first woman to be elected as vice president.

Harris talked a lot and told the young people to stay strong when they go to places where no one else is like them.

“We need to understand that some people will open the door for you and keep it open,” Harris said. “Sometimes they will not. ” And then you have to forcefully open that door.

The crowd cheered and clapped loudly. Harris laughed and said, “Sorry for my language. ”

Bad language in politics is not very unusual. Last weekend, Donald Trump, who is expected to be the Republican presidential nominee, led a crowd at a rally in New York City. They were chanting a disrespectful word about his criminal trial.

When Joe Biden was vice president, he was heard telling President Barack Obama that newly passed health care legislation was a very important deal. Harris usually doesn’t use that kind of language in public.

The vice-president spoke about her thoughts at a meeting during the annual Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies Legislative Leadership Summit. The talk was shown live on the White House website.

Harris talked on Monday at a party in the White House garden for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, with President Biden and actor Lucy Liu.

Liu said that Harris becoming the first female Black and Asian vice president shows that anything is possible in America.

Biden said that people from Asian backgrounds, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders are the fastest-growing group in the US. He said they stand for people who come from other countries to live in America, young people who dream of a better future, and a country that cherishes freedom.

The president started talking by saying, “I’m Joe Biden. ” I work for Kamala Harris.

Collapsed Baltimore bridge span falls after workers detonate series of explosives

Workers used explosives to break down the last part of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Monday. The steel trusses fell down into the river with a big noise and a splash.

The bombs exploded with orange flashes and made lots of black smoke. The longest beams fell off the grounded Dali container ship and slid into the water, making a big splash.

It was a big step in getting the Dali unstuck from the wreckage. The Dali lost power and crashed into a bridge support column shortly after leaving Baltimore on March 26.

The building collapse caused the death of six construction workers and stopped a lot of ships from moving through the port in Baltimore. The planned demolition will help bring up the sunken ship and open the port for traffic again. This will help many workers and businesses that have been affected by the port closure.

Authorities said the explosion happened just as they wanted it to. They said they need to check the few trusses on the Dali’s bow and make sure there’s no underwater wreckage stopping the ship from being floated and moved.

“It’s like taking off layers from an onion,” said Lt. GeneralScott Spellmon from the United States. The Army Corps of Engineers.

Officials believe they will be able to float the ship again in a few days. Then three or four small boats will help bring it to a spot at the port. It will probably stay there for a few weeks and get fixed temporarily before it’s taken to a shipyard for bigger repairs.

“This was a very important step for our moving forward,” Col. Estee Pinchasin, who leads the Army Corps of Engineers in Baltimore, said right after the demolition. She said the teams don’t think they will need to use any more bombs.

The crew of the ship stayed on board during the explosion, and the captain said that no one got hurt and there were no issues. David O’Connell is in charge of the Port of Baltimore.

The crew members cannot leave the ship that has stopped moving since the disaster. Authorities mentioned that they have been occupied with taking care of the ship and helping the people who are looking into the situation. Out of all the crew members, 20 are from India and one is from Sri Lanka.

Engineers took a long time to get ready to use explosives to break apart a 500-foot-long bridge that weighs up to 600 tons. The destruction was delayed on Sunday because of heavy rain and lightning.

“Gov Wes Moore said that this way of doing things is the best. He mentioned at a news conference on Monday that nobody has been hurt while cleaning up so far. ” “Making sure everyone is safe in this job comes first for us. ”

Officials said that fire teams were ready in the area during the explosion in case any sparks caused problems.

This week, in a video, officials said that engineers were using careful cuts to control how the trusses break. They said the method is very precise and safe. It’s one of the best ways to remove steel when it’s under a lot of tension. The hydraulic grabbers will pick up the broken steel pieces and put them onto barges.

The NTSB and the FBI are looking into why the bridge collapsed. Authorities said that the safety board will look into the ship’s electrical system.

The big shipping company Maersk hired the Dali ship to go from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the journey didn’t go as planned. The people on the boat called for help because they couldn’t steer the boat and had no power. A few minutes later, the boat crashed into the bridge.

Government officials praised the teams that helped find the bodies of the six construction workers. The most recent body was found in the sunken wreckage last week. All the people who were hurt were Latino immigrants who moved to the U. SLooking for work. They were fixing holes in the road at night when the bridge was broken.

Authorities said the work to open the port’s 50-foot deep channel is still on schedule and should be finished by the end of May. Up until now, workers have made a temporary pathway that is not as deep. Authorities said that 365 ships used the port in the last few weeks. The port usually handles more cars and farming equipment than any other port in the country.

Nancy Pelosi, who used to be in charge of the House of Representatives, grew up in Baltimore. Her father and brother were once mayors there. She said that the Key Bridge disaster was like when Fort McHenry in Baltimore was attacked at night. This attack inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the War of 1812. She said that both show how strong and tough Maryland is.

Pelosi, a member of the Democratic party from California, went to a news conference on Monday with two of her family members. She said that the different government agencies are working together quickly and safely to handle the tragedy well.

“She said that the flag was still there through the night. ” That’s Baltimore tough.

Leading NATO soldier advises leaders and allies to prepare for unexpected in Ukraine

Ukraine is fighting a big battle to survive against Russia. NATO says that Western armies and political leaders need to change how they help Ukraine defend itself from invading forces. This is because Ukraine has been at war with Russia for almost two years.

During a meeting of the 31-nation alliance’s leaders, Admiral Rob Bauer, who leads the NATO Military Committee, said that President Vladimir Putin is afraid of democracy. This year, many countries are having elections, which may be why Putin started the war.

NATO leaders are going to discuss plans for the largest military exercises in Europe since the Cold War during a two-day meeting in Brussels. The wargames are a way for NATO to show they are strong and committed to protecting all their friends from being attacked.

As the war slows down, and with the US and European Union having trouble agreeing on funding for Ukraine’s struggling economy because of political disagreements, Bauer asked for everyone in society to work together to solve the problem, not just the military.

We need people and organizations to change how they think. In the past, everything could be planned and controlled. But now, anything can happen at any time. “We are entering a time where we should be ready for surprises,” he said as the meeting started.

Bauer said NATO needs to change how it fights in war to be better in the future.

On Monday, UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said that the government will send 20,000 soldiers to join NATO military exercises called “Steadfast Defender. ” They will be sent to eastern Europe from February to June.

The UK will send fast planes and planes that watch, along with ships and submarines.

Allies are giving military supplies to Ukraine, which is using up ammunition. So, Norway is giving 2 billion kroner to make more ammunition because they need a lot of it.

Norway’s Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram said that it’s important to have a stronger defense industry to help Ukraine and protect our own security.

Half of the money will be given to Nammo, a company in Norway that makes ammunition, rocket engines, and space stuff. The Prime Minister said the money will help them make more artillery ammunition.

In Brussels, Bauer said NATO will keep helping Ukraine for a long time.

“Today is the 693rd day of a war that Russia thought would only last three days. ” “We will support Ukraine every day because the result of this war will affect the whole world,” he said.

“According to Bauer, this war isn’t really about Russia being threatened by Ukraine or NATO. ” This war is because Russia is scared of something stronger than any weapon – democracy. If the people in Ukraine can have freedom to make choices, then people in Russia will soon want them too.

12 Reasons Why A United Zambian Opposition Cannot Win Against President Hichilema In 2026

0

Part One
It is not my intention to bore the reader with economic and political jargon and semantics on this matter, but my wish is to mainly deal with practical issues.

Reason No. 1: The opposition has no strong credible candidate.
The opposition mainly comprises press briefings, Facebook, and TikTok parties. Silavwe’s Golden Party is almost a one-man show though he is an eloquent speaker, Nawakwi’s FDD is a spent force, Mulyokela’s party has its Headquarters in the street just adjacent to Lusaka Central Police Station, Mbikusita Lewanika’s Agenda for Zambia is unheard of while the New Heritage Party is mainly for posing on camera. Mwenda Kasonde’s Economic Freedom Fighters is very active on TikTok and YouTube while Thomas Sipalo’s party has always been available for entertainment at opposition party meetings and the list goes on. The main parties that one can identify are Patriotic Front (Edgar Lungu’s faction which is currently moribund) and The Socialist Party headed by Fred Mmembe. Even amidst the current economic hardships, people are not calling for Mr. Lungu’s return save for PF cadres and others who were the beneficiaries of Kasaka Ka Ndalama. People’s memories are still fresh on a) Edgar Lungu’s reign of terror b) marginalization of people from what PF terms the Zambezi Region c) total neglect of the youth and students in schools and 4) neglect of rural development. So, Mr. Lungu has very little chance of winning though he can pick a few votes. On the other hand, if the opposition went for Fred Mmembe and floated him against HH, he would be badly battered. Of course, he would still pick a few votes here and there like Muchinga and Northern Provinces. Apparently, he also tries to get some votes when competing in Eastern Province as seen in the Kaumbwe parliamentary by-election in October 2021, but he cannot put up any serious challenge towards unseating President HH. Mmembe’s past will also continue haunting him and may continue costing him electoral successes in years to come if he does not address and provide answers to Winter Kabimba’s unending accusations over their past encounters. He also owes the nation an explanation on whether President Lungu’s closure of the Post Newspapers was politically motivated or was due to tax evasion or failure to pay taxes now that they even share the same platform. Was the closure stage managed like in the James Bond movie or it was real?

Reason No. 2: The opposition’s strongest candidate, Mr. Edgar Lungu, is a “Coward Political Hyena.”
Why do I say so? Stephen King once told us that “A cowardly leader is the most dangerous of men.” At a press conference held in Lusaka in late January 2024, Mr. Lungu was asked what he would have done if he were in office, to restructure the debt burden that he himself with his government contracted and left behind and was suffocating the economy. The reporter further wanted to know what the former president would have done differently. Instead of giving hope to Zambians who have now been terribly affected by his careless borrowing, the former president rudely shut the reporter up and accosted him for asking the question. “I am not in State House, so, you can’t ask me that, ask HH,” he retorted in reference to President Hichilema. Those are answers that came from a person I cannot hesitate to describe as a Coward Political Hyena. On the contrary, President HH managed to restructure the debt to the shame of prophets of doom. Mr. Lungu can only be compared to a Hyena’s cowardly character of waiting for other animals to hunt but quickly grabs their hard-earned kill without putting any effort. That’s what he is. He and his friends want to ride on HH’s success and take his presidency away. Mwailasha!!

Reason No. 3: The failed PF tribal card used against HH in 2021 will no longer be available in 2026.
In a video post that went viral just before the 2021 elections, then-President Lungu informed the nation that Hakainde Hichilema would never be president of Zambia saying “…only one man, munthu omwe, now you ask yourself, what is so special, eeehh, well, we will one day have a Tonga president, but certainly not the current aspirant” in direct reference to Hakainde Hichilema. Bizwell Mutale, another senior member of the then-ruling party PF, followed the Tongas to Pemba District and told them in their faces whilst there, “Zambia will never have a Tonga president.” But HH sailed through with a landslide victory in 2021 and Mr. Lungu has never apologized for those remarks. In Eastern Province, the PF were telling unsuspecting citizens in villages that if they voted for HH, he would divide the country as Eastern Province would be cut off. But the same HH they were profiling has taken huge amounts of resources for education, health, and infrastructure development to the rural areas. So, people are wondering: Is this the same person whom the PF referred to as divisive and the one who was going to divide the country?” they ask.

Reason No. 4: Misplaced opposition reliance on current economic hardships and disillusionment with UPND and HH.
Arnold Glasow tells us “One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency.” Did Mr. Lungu realize that contracting such huge debt would result in the crisis we are in? Not at all. But no sooner had HH taken over the presidency than he identified the problem and ventured on a mission to restructure the debt failure to which the country would have remained stagnant. Swope also reminds us, “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody.” The opposition is riding on a platform of current disenchantment by the electorate hoping for hardships to continue along the same trajectory until election time in 2026. What people should realize is that President HH and his team are making very hard decisions in order for Zambia to get redeemed from the shackles of PF economic mismanagement and plunder. Your car breaks down. Surely, you must have it repaired before you venture on a long journey. This is what President HH is doing. Making hard decisions is not for the weak-hearted. Mr. Lungu and his teams should also know that disillusionment of voters does not automatically translate into opposition votes. Not at all. There are so many other factors that come into play. The Zambian economy is divided into sectors and of course, I am aware that most of the sectors rely on one another. These sectors can be compared to a school syllabus or course outline. The examiner sets an examination based on the entire syllabus and the paper is given to the student to write the exam. The examiner cannot be seen to get the student’s answer manuscript and start marking the paper after one hour when the exam time given is two hours thus denying the student one full hour. President HH needs the remaining hour to complete the exam before giving the manuscript to the voters for marking in 2026. Judging him now is unfair because he is still writing the exam and he still has time to complete the exam.

Reason No. 5: President Hichilema has fortified his position by clearing his name and presidency on African Cultural Values and Christianity.
A few months after getting elected, the president’s presidency almost went shaky following the opposition’s accusations that he was allowing the country to be taken over by homosexuals. It was alleged that homosexuals had begun showing their ugly heads in Zambia following his election as president and prodded him to state his position. On 15th August 2022 and on 15th March 2023, in Luanshya and Chingola respectively, he categorically reiterated his opposition to homosexuality and denounced it as unacceptable thus putting an end to PF speculation that he was encouraging the importation of homosexuality to Zambia from the West. He urged the church to come out strong and denounce homosexuality and guide our youths. On the contrary, apart from Mr. Lungu who also denounced homosexuality during his presidency, other opposition leaders have not informed the nation of their positions leading to speculation that some of them may be funded by some homosexual advocate groups. Without stating their positions, their performance will likely be affected if some rival political party or parties raise the issue.

Reason No. 6: The Bemba mentality of wanting to always grab the presidency.
Following the PF split into factions, Zambia does not have a strong party capable of challenging the United Party for National Development (UPND). However, one of the factions aka Lungu faction can try to compete in the elections but cannot pose any serious challenge to UPND if it was to find its feet. Both factions are led by Bembas from the Northern part of the country, but the Lungu faction seems stronger than the Sampa one though by order of the court, the Sampa faction is the legitimate one and holds the presidency. Of course, the Bembas are entitled to vie for any position in the country as provided for by the Zambian Constitution. What is surprising though is their lust for power of presidency. No stigma. We had our first Republican president Dr. Kaunda (May his soul rest in peace) hailing from the North, late Chiluba and late Sata also from the same region. Now 97 percent of all political parties in Zambia are led by the North fighting for presidency. No regard for others to also hold the presidency. When are others going to rule?

Now let us assume that Mr. Lungu steps aside for whatever reasons for the 2026 presidency, One would expect a serious scramble for the presidency from PF factions. But hold on for a second! Which Bemba is going to allow another Bemba to take up the presidency? Even if the factions came up with one presidential candidate whether you call it PF faction or UKA, there will be candidates that will break away from that united front. Why? Because that is how they are. Bemba mentality of wanting to be president or always having a Bemba president.

As a result of this mentality, do you think Dr. Chilufya Chitalu can let GBM become the presidential candidate when he believes he is the best candidate? Do you think Hon Mundubile can let Sampa take the candidacy? What about Hon Kampyongo? Can he allow these other Bembas to take up the presidency? Unfortunately for them, even if PF produced one candidate and the rest rallied behind that candidate, my view is that they would still be given an electoral annihilation by UPND because of their past. They have come from a background of failed leadership, reign of terror with their party being perceived as a party of ……nderers.

Anyway, that is the beauty of democracy and freedom of speech. The Bembas are free to enjoy their right to become presidents while I also enjoy my freedom of communication. We are both happy and I will not tolerate funny comments because what I have said is true and correct to the best of my knowledge. When it pleases them, they say “Insansa kuchinjana” but when others want to vie for the presidency, they quickly change their positions. Now watch the space. My article will have two main responses and those will be: Who stopped people from other regions from vying for presidency? My answer in advance using their own adage, “Insoni ebunthu” The other response may just be insults to which I will not be able to respond because they will be too many and my culture does not allow me to insult or insult back.

It’s not fair to pay Nevers and Kavindele
….as you deny Edgar Lungu his pay due to Politics – Pastor Mambwe…
From The Analysis
A Lusaka clergy and media magnate, Pastor Kennedy Mambwe, has questioned the government’s decision to provide former vice presidents Enoch Kavindele and Reverend Nevers Mumba with monthly salaries while denying the sixth President of Zambia, Dr. Edgar Lungu, the same privilege.
Mambwe said if the reason for halting President Lungu’s monthly payments, withdrawing state security, and other privileges is because he returned to active politics, the same reasoning must apply to Reverend Mumba and Mr. Kavindele.

“Pastor Mumba, whom I deeply respect, is the president of the opposition party MMD. I feel compelled to publicly declare this.”
Mambwe argued that if the reason for halting President Lungu’s payments, withdrawing state security, and other privileges is his return to active politics, the same reasoning should apply to Reverend Mumba and Mr. Kavindele.

“Why do you deny President Lungu his pay because he returned to politics, but you pay two ex-vice presidents who are both active politicians?” questioned Mambwe.

The pastor and influential media operator appealed to President Hichilema to revisit the situation and even put in place a law that makes it legal for ex-vice presidents to receive payment because now there appears to be none. Ostensibly, this means Mr. Kavindele and Mr. Mumba could be receiving illegal salaries in exchange for praising President Hichilema, whose administration’s popularity has declined due to the high cost of living.

“It’s a travesty of the natural laws of justice to award Mr. Kavindele and Pastor Mumba, both well-known politicians, while punishing the only surviving former President of Zambia.”

The government has not responded to queries on why the payments of retired officials are going on selectively after President Lungu lost his constitutional retirement package. Conversely, during the same program on KBNTV, Ambassador Anthony Mukwita advised state police to swiftly arrest President Lungu and charge him with a crime. This advice comes after a walk in the CBD that brought traffic to a standstill last week, instead of deliberately targeting people close to him.

“My humble advice is that police should move in quickly and arrest President Lungu for any suspected breach of the law when he walks or runs around town,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

“It’s unfair to threaten him or his handlers every time he tries to exercise his right to freely associate and freely assemble because the precedent being set for future retired Presidents and how they are treated is bad,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

“Arrest the former President if you, police, believe he has committed a crime against the state by walking in the city,” said the former envoy and author.

Zambia in Crisis and The Domino Effect of Government’s Numerous Wrong Decisions

By Daimone Siulapwa

As Zambia grapples with a myriad of challenges, it has become painfully evident that all our systems are collapsing one by one, plunging the nation into a state of turmoil and uncertainty.

The root of this crisis can be traced back to the shortsighted decisions made by those in power, whose actions have unleashed a domino effect of disastrous consequences upon our people.

It all began with the reckless decision by government to sell maize from the national reserves FRA in a desperate bid to raise cash.

This ill-conceived move not only depleted our food security but also sent shockwaves through the economy, leading to an unprecedented surge in the price of mealie meal.

Overnight, the staple food of our nation became a luxury that many could ill afford, pushing countless families to the brink of starvation.

But the nightmare didn’t end there. The specter of load-shedding descended upon us, with power outages lasting for hours on end, disrupting businesses, crippling industries, and plunging homes into darkness.

As if that isn’t enough, the government through ZESCO has seen it fit to compound our misery by announcing plans to extend load-shedding to more than 12 hours a day, which will further exacerbate the suffering of ordinary citizens already reeling from the effects of economic hardship.

And just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, the hammer blow fell with a steep increase in fuel prices, sending shockwaves through an already fragile economy.

This move, purportedly aimed at shoring up government coffers, only served to deepen the financial burden on the shoulders of ordinary Zambians, as the cost of transportation, goods, and services skyrocketed overnight.

As if on cue, the government followed up this cruel blow with yet another increase, this time in electricity tariffs.

In a country already plagued by inadequate infrastructure and chronic underinvestment, such a move is nothing short of a betrayal of the people’s trust.

It is a slap in the face to every hardworking Zambian struggling to make ends meet in the face of mounting hardships.

And now, as if to add insult to injury, we find ourselves facing a serious water crisis, the latest in a long line of disasters to befall our beleaguered nation.

This crisis, attributed to ZESCO’s load-shedding and drought conditions exacerbated by climate change, threatens to further compound the suffering of our people, particularly those in shanty compounds who are already marginalized and forgotten by those in power.

But let us be clear: these are not mere acts of nature or strokes of bad luck.

They are as much the direct result of years of mismanagement, corruption, and incompetence on the part of our leaders.

They are the consequences of a government that has lost touch with the needs of its people, choosing instead to prioritize its own self-interest and enrichment at the expense of the nation’s welfare.

In the face of such adversity, it is incumbent upon all patriotic Zambians to speak out and demand accountability from those in power.

We cannot afford to sit idly by as our country is driven to the brink of collapse by the very individuals entrusted with its stewardship.

We must hold our leaders accountable for their actions, demand transparency and honesty in governance, and work together to rebuild our shattered nation from the ground up.

The time for complacency or blaming the previous regime is over. The time for action is now.

We must rise up as one voice and demand better for ourselves, for our children, and for future generations.

Only then can we hope to reclaim the promise of a better, brighter future for Zambia and all its people.

Zambia is at its darkest economic hour with absolutely no hope for ordinary people under President Hichilema- Mundubile

WATER SHORTAGES WILL BREED DISEASES AND POVERTY, MUNDUBILE WARNS

14th May 2024

ZAMBIANS should brace themselves for harder times ahead following the announcement by the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWS) that it has started rationing water supply in the capital due to load shedding, PF Parliament Chief Whip Brian Mundubile has warned.

And Mundubile says he is shocked that Zesco’s Managing Director Victor Mapani can go on holiday when the power utility company was facing huge problems of power deficit.

He said the increasing problems from electricity deficit was worrying but what is more strange is to see Mapani going on leave at a time when his leadership was needed to traverse the problem the country is faced with.

Mundubile observes lack of seriousness in boss the UPND government and Zesco in the manner it is handling the challenges the country is facing.

“Am shocked that the ZESCO chief executive has gone on annual leave at a time the country is experiencing the worst drought in 60 years,” he said.

He said President Hichilema has failed and his failure will plunge the country into default settings.

“The mounting crises from electricity, expensive mealie, high fuel prices is testimony, if anyone was in doubt that President Hakainde Hichilema has failed lamentably to government the country, even in the face of climate change.

“As is this is not enough Victor Mapani the embattled ZESCO boss goes on leave in the middle of a crisis,”

“it is like a fireman deciding to take a lunch break when the house is on fire or the army commander deciding to take a siesta in the middle of a war.”

“It is criminal if it is true Victor has gone on leave then he ha s failed to put out the fire at ZESCO and like ERB, Victor and his board Chairperson must be sacked or resign honourably. You can’t go on leave in the middle of a crisis, not in Zambia not anywhere on earth.”

Amidst rising calls for the firing of Mapani from various circles, the embattled ZESCO boss has not been seen at the office since the power cuts escalated country wide paving way to speculation that he has been fired but this has been refuted by the ZESCO board that says Mapani “has gone on annual leave” at a time of ZESCO´s darkest hour.

This is the time Zambians must rally together and use their democratic right to protest beyond the booing of President Hichilema that occurred on Sunday at Heroes stadium in Lusaka.

“Zambia is at its darkest economic hour with absolutely no hope for ordinary people under President Hichilema,”

“how will we explain this misery of load shedding, water rationing and high prices of food?”.

Making a ´climate change´ excuse will not hold water because President Hichilema promised to work around climate change using his economic prowess the way Dubai has done in recorded viral clips.

He said a deeper explanation has to be given as to the absence of Mapani at ZESCO at the peak of a power crisis, something that would have not happened under President Edgar Lungu.

“The announcement by the water company regarding water rationing in Lusaka due to load shedding makes extremely sad reading because it will mean increased poverty and possible death of innocent Zambians as diarrhoea dieses threaten to kick in and rise as people turn to drink or use dirty water,”

Am reacting to a statement by the water company which on Monday said ´water shedding´ would start immediately, to be synchronised to the ZESCO power cut schedule.

“The poverty cocktail we are in now will cripple many,”

“you are talking load shedding of beyond 10 hours, now water rationing, expensive mealie meal in short supply and high fuel prices…few Zambians will survive this even among the toughest.”

ZAMBIANS ARE NOW DESPERATE FOR SURVIVAL

…the country is bleeding out of its own misery and suffering from the worst economic and leadership disaster – M’MEMBE

Lusaka, Tuesday (May 14, 2024)

Zambians are desperate for survival and President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration should not misconstrue their silence over the high cost of living as acceptance of the existing harsh economic conditions, Socialist Party president, Fred M’membe has said.

Dr. M’membe said President Hichilema should get down to work and lower the cost of living instead of posturing at stadiums and public meetings full of hired crowds to prove to people that he is still popular.

“Life has come unreasonably unfair, and they must not cheat themselves into thinking or believing that all is well because nothing is working in this country today.

“Let them not misconstrue the people’s silence on these issues as though they have accepted the status quo. People are tired . People are hungry and angry. People are desperate for survival, ” Dr. M’membe said.

He said citizens need to be helped out urgently through provision of proper opportunities or life lines for their own survival.

He expressed concern that Zambia was facing looming hunger, energy and water crises.

“Similarly, the fuel price is unreasonably high, food prices are skyrocketing, load shedding is at its peak, mealie meal is scarce and unaffordable for many, water rationing has commenced, low drug stocks in public medical facilities, worker’s salaries are being wiped out by the economic downturn, and many other numerous problems. It’s crisis upon crisis, and it can’t be business as usual,” Dr. M’membe said.

He said it is clear that the country is bleeding out of its own misery and suffering from the worst economic and leadership disaster.

Dr. M’membe said things cannot continue this way and something needs to be done urgently.

“We need a new system of governance and accountability for the people and country. We need leadership that listens to advice, a leadership that puts people first and not one that is preoccupied with personal interest and wealth accumulation. A leadership that is sympathetic to the needs of our people and is willing to help the poor people of this country,” Dr. M’membe said.

He recalled that just a few months ago, the country lost many citizens to cholera and now the people are suffering from hunger.

“We call upon Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his government that instead of posturing at stadiums and public meetings, full of hired crowds to prove to the people that he is still popular or famous, let him go to work and lower the cost of living.

“Life has become unreasonably unfair, and they must not cheat themselves into thinking or believing that all is well because nothing is working in this country today,” Dr. M’membe

Hichilema’s cabinet is the worst in Zambia’s history: it is now possibly committing
economic genocide – Part Two

By Azwell Banda

Last week Friday, in Part One of this article, I said today, in Part Two, I may discuss, using a
sample of Hakainde’s cabinet and some of his praise singers, what I wrote about last Friday.

I stand by what I said last week, about Hakainde Hichilema’s cabinet: without exception, they are all the epitome of mediocrity, incompetence, backwardness, lack of patriotism, and absolute lack of political acumen to read the mood of the masses, as politicians. They are a mean, selfish, cold and calculating lot, for themselves as individuals, as a collective and for their paymaster. They have demonstrated utter contempt for the majority of Zambians and their hunger, mass unemployment, poverty and the extreme social, economic and political injustices and inequalities the majority of Zambians suffer, every day.

Further, I maintain that even the most neurotic praise singer of Hakainde and the UPND can
no longer deny that Hichilema and the UPND are fake, thieves, corrupt, autocrats, and have a
very short shelf-life, in government. Like most cognitive dissonance patients, Hichilema’s praise singers, precisely because Hichilema has not created an alternative cheaper economy for them, and therefore Hichilema has failed to shield them from the hunger and mass poverty everywhere in Zambia, Hichilema’s neurotic praise singers are forced to confront the reality of how rotten, mean, selfish, cold and calculating Hichilema and his cabinet are as they too suffer the same excruciating hunger, unemployment, poverty, social, economic and political inequalities the UPND government has unleashed in Zambia.

Fundamentally, I stated that Hichilema and the UPND, while in the opposition, used the devious and treacherous strategy of lies and false promises to win the elections. In government, they have contemptuously abandoned this strategy and are now blaming suffering Zambians for creating their own misery because Zambians are lazy, love free
things, breed uncontrollably, lack entrepreneurial skills, do not invest, are ignorant and need
knowledge and wisdom presumably from Hichilema, and have a wrong mindset, among the
many inferior human attributes Zambians suffer from. Zambians now confront the true philosophy and ideology of Hichilema and his UPND: they are a cold, cruel, extreme right-wing, proto-fascist, conservative, slavery extolling, pro-colonialism, pro-conservative capitalism, pro-imperialism, and are unashamedly and openly puppets of the West.

Hichilema promised Zambians a great cabinet. The world has fundamentally changed, with the US/NATO and their Western allies’ war against Russia in Ukraine, and the rise of Russia itself, India and China as super powers who have made it clear the era of US/NATO and Western domination of the world is over: they are demanding a multipolar world and recognition and respect from the West of their histories, economic and political systems.

This means essentially that the Western liberal paradigm and its White Supremacism, racism, colonialism and neo-colonial, capitalist and imperialist organisation and domination of the world is over.

And yet Hichilema’s minister of finance Situmbeko Musokotwane is a die-in- the wool neoliberal dinosaur. The US and its Western allies long buried the so called “Washington Consensus” and today they are busy nationalising the debts of their banks,
protecting their key economic and strategic sectors from being overtaken by Russia, India and China in particular, and are advancing the idea and practice that economic sovereignty is national security, no “free trade” nonsense. Musokotwane meanwhile is religiously following and preaching failed neoliberal hogwash.

Musokotwane has lost Zambia vital revenues from the mines, through his indefensible and reckless mining taxation policies and all the goings on in the large mines currently on sale. And yet more than at any time in our history, today Zambia needs every cent it can get from its minerals. He has also lavished maize exporters the removal of government duty on maize exports. He has over generously removed tax from the imports of several mining equipment and technologies. His latest budget has promised relaxed labour laws in special economic
zones.

The immense negative and deadly impact of the austerity measures he has unleashed upon Zambia are there for all to see: prices of fuels, food, electricity, transport and rent have all risen rapidly since he became minister of finance. He has become the foremost neoliberal evangelist whose sole political responsibility is to explain away, to “clarify” the economic suffering his government has so savagely unleashed upon Zambians.

You need both the qualities of an idiot of a special type and an educated moron to think, act and behave the way Mtolo Phiri, Hichilema’s minister of agriculture has done, thus far. Of course, like all of Hichilema’s ministers, it is safe to assume there is always something personal for them, in everything they do, which involves large sums of money. They are all capitalists, you see. This man, Mtolo Phiri, is a ball of moronic contradictions. His is a unique
version of incompetence from the rest of Hichilema’s cabinet.

As things are right now, we have no clue, in figures, of how much food the country needs, to feed its near 10 million Zambians who urgently need relief food, and not just maize. In the midst of a hunger
Tsunami his government has cooked up, Mtolo Phiri is celebrating expensive “winter maize” from commercial farmers, completely unconcerned about the price of mealie meal from such pricy maize, for the majority of Zambians among whom the economically active are largely unemployed and most belong to the impoverishing informal sector, which accounts for more than 90 per cent of our GDP. The less said about the chaotic and painful bungling, and suspected massive corruption, of government farming inputs for poor farmers, the better.

Zambia is a mining country. Hichilema could not have chosen a better sycophant in a minister of mines than Paul Kabuswe. This man has the most abiding devotion at insulting the majority of Zambians while simultaneously coldly brushing aside the real concerns of the mass of the people of Zambia. Hichilema chose Paul Kabuswe very well, in another attribute: Kabuswe consistently showers unqualified zombie like adulation on HH. It is him who mostly appears as if he has suspended both his consciousness and conscience, and sublimated these into lavishing fake praise, glory and honour to his Great Leader, Hichilema. I am 100 per cent sure Kabuswe will, like Hakainde Hichilema, do jail time, at some point in time, for the crimes committed while in office. The shambles in our mining sector are a testimony to the enduring unfitness to hold cabinet office, of Paul Kabuswe.

Some had wrongly hoped that Jack Mwiimbu, minister of home affairs and internal security,
with his legal education, law practice and many years in the opposition in which he also
distinguished himself as a fake fighter for “democracy”, “constitutionalism” and “the rule of
law” would make a great job of his cabinet post. He has turned out to be the worst of the ingratiating, fawning, and right-hand men of Hichilema in committing the very crimes and constitutional vandalism he pretended to hate and fight, when in the opposition. He will be remembered, among many bad things, for aiding and abetting the efforts by his party and government to destroy the Patriotic Front, for presiding over the violation of the
constitutional right of opposition parties to assemble peacefully, for sustaining the unconstitutional application by the police of the Public Order Act, for being made to sing, prematurely, eulogies for his Master and Lord, Hakainde Hichilema at the KKIA, over the abominable IMF secured debt restructuring process. More than anybody else in Hichilema’s
cabinet, surely, this man’s inability to disassociate himself from the unconstitutional and criminal conduct of government must weigh very heavily on his conscience.

The less said about Cornelius Mweetwa the better: perhaps it is the illusions of grandeur and television cameras and being frequently sought after by journalists, this man should have been kept where he was, instead of replacing hapless and helpless Chushi Kasanda, as chief government spokesperson. He has rapidly collapsed into a heap of unbelievable rubbish. Even his language sounds disjointed, his sentences irrationally strung together, and he lies
with his eyes wide open. Somehow, Cornelius confirms the importance of a possible ministerial induction course, before commencing duties, once such a one is appointed a cabinet minister.

It is hard not to be infected by the sheer beauty, physical strength and stamina of Silvia Masebo, minister of health. She is such a bundle of ministerial energy if only this was knowledgeably, wisely, competently, diplomatically and effectively channelled to mobilizing and allowing the many health professionals in Zambia inside and outside her ministry to pull their resources and weight behind the task of transforming our public health sector, she would be such a great minister. Alas, she is a busybody who steps on everyone’s toes, insults
everyone, and achieves nothing much, in the end. It could be that she loves being in the limelight, all the time, mostly for bullish reasons. Zambia’s public health sector is marking time and going backwards, with Silvia Masebo at the helm.

One would expect a new minister of education from a political party which promised to heal the divisions of a very hungry, poor, tribalism infected, explosively divided country to be very careful and wise, and avoid feeding negative stereotypes, of any people, in such a country. Hichilema’s minister of education Douglas Syakalima, when presented with evidence that Luapula Province is the most impoverished of the Zambian provinces, blamed the
victims for being poor. In October 2023 Syakalima told parliament that the poverty in Luapula and low enrolment rates even after free education has been implemented were as a result of the poverty of the minds of the people of Luapula. Hate speech could never be so blatantly clearly made. Syakalima essentially labelled the people of Luapula primitive
Neanderthals incapable of appreciating the value of education and consequently they inevitably must be the poorest province in Zambia. His decision to label Luapula thus when it shares similar poverty statistics with Western Province may be part of the UPND strategy of using region and geography, as tools for governing.

By his own admission Elijah Muchima, minister of lands, has failed to root out corruption in our land administration. But, as the cost-of-living crisis intensified, and the majority of Zambians were groaning with hunger and complaining about how expensive life had become, Muchima went beyond the confines of his ministry to assume the function of a government spokesperson. “The cost of living has not risen at all. Who says because of removing street
venders?” Then genius Muchima answered, himself: “That is total nonsense. There is no hardship. People are used to easy life like they were doing it in PF, where people were getting money anyhow, and throwing it away”. Then he says: “This time, work hard, and get your money. The President wants people to be doing something.”

Muchima told the media all this as a response to our eminences in civil society who had demanded that the government should explain what it was doing to address the soaring cost of living that was causing great hardship to Zambians. We see here that Muchima is essentially restating the argument that “poverty” in Zambia is “poverty of the mind”, thus “nationalising” Syakalima’s insult to Luapulans. Apparently only lazy parasites, and these must be largely Patriotic Front people, are complaining about hardships in Zambia today, says Muchima. Apparently UPND supporters and praise singers
are thriving: they are not looking for freebies.

We see that Zambians are being bullied to suffer silently by the UPND government because
if you complain, you are accused of being just lazy, lover of free things, uncontrollable breeder, lacking in entrepreneurial skills, you do not invest, are ignorant and need knowledge and wisdom presumably from Hichilema, and have a wrong mindset, among the many inferior human attributes you suffer from.

I can go on, and on, and examine the conduct of the entire “Dream Cabinet” of Hakainde Hichilema and it will be found that they are all cut from the same cold, incompetent, selfish and unpatriotic neoliberal cloth. Those I have left out are no better than those I have discussed. Some are worse. Every king or false idol must have their own enablers, intellectuals, academics, choirs and other cultural workers whose job it is to defend, manufacture consent among the masses, and sing praises for the king or false idol. I will find time to present a few of such scum, for Hichilema and the UPND, this I promise. As this cabinet continues to live in their own fantasy “dream land”, Zambia is burning, with hunger,
and anger.

HH shouldn’t emulate failures of his predecessors, urges Harrington

HH shouldn’t emulate failures of his predecessors, urges Harrington

By Thomas Ngala(The Mast)

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema should not emulate failures of his predecessors, urges William Harrington.
He says there is need for President Hichilema to take up the challenge made by Barotse National Freedom Alliance (BNFA) France-based international lawyers to append his signature to the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) submission document and thereby allow for arbitration on the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 impasse.

Harrington, a BNFA trustee, said he appreciated President Hichilema’s desire for peace to prevail over the Barotseland issue and that he will not allow any blood to be spilled on the Barotse plains as declared in a press conference in 2023.

He said it is unreasonable for President Hichilema to state that he would emulate his predecessors on the Barotseland issue because the abrogation of the BA64 by Dr Kenneth Kaunda was an illegality under the international law on treaties.
“That was a very encouraging and progressive policy statement for which the President must be highly commended. What is however needed now more than ever before is political will to do the needful.

The BNFA however believes that a sustainable solution can and indeed must be achieved through the proposed international arbitration process,” he said in a statement. “The BNFA is desirous to see the President leave a good legacy of having found a sustainable solution to the long-standing Barotseland impasse by agreeing to the arbitration process. The BNFA also fervently feels that if indeed President Hichilema is against the Barotseland National Council (BNC) resolutions of 2012 following disengagement … by first republican president Dr Kenneth Kaunda in 1969, then he should not hesitate to sign the PCA submission document that was presented to him in 2021.

President Hichilema should not emulate failures of his predecessors. We can only urge him not to follow footsteps of past predecessors who failed to use arbitration to resolve the impasse. The BNFA is reiterates its position to accept any outcome of the arbitration process. We stand for peace and he himself has expressed his desire for peace.”

Harrington reiterated BNFA’s consistent and persistent position that it would accept and respect any outcome of the arbitration process in the interest of sustainable peace and stability.

He called on President Hichilema not to abate the gross illegality as his predecessors did on the issue, but rather to fix it as a matter of extreme urgency through arbitration.
