Houthi attacks in Yemen are self-defense – Rishi Sunak

0

Attacks on Houthi rebel places in Yemen are “important and appropriate” to keep the global shipping safe in the Red Sea, Rishi Sunak has said.

The UK and US bombed military sites during the night.

Mr Sunak said that the UK took action against a group that is supported by Iran and poses a threat to UK ships. He said this action was taken to protect themselves.

In return, Houthi leaders have said that the UK and US will face severe consequences.

The US and its allies bombed the Houthi group for the first time because they have been attacking ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthis are in charge of a lot of Yemen and have said that they are helping Hamas by attacking ships going to Israel.

The US Air Force hit over 60 targets at 16 places in Yemen that were being used by Houthi rebels.

On Friday morning, Mr. Sunak said that the Houthi rebels are causing problems for UK and international ships and disrupting trade routes.

The prime minister said that, even though the international community has warned them many times, the Houthis keep attacking ships in the Red Sea, including those from the UK and US.

“This is not acceptable. ” The UK will always support the right for ships to travel wherever they want and for trade to happen freely.

He said the UK took some action to defend itself with help from the United States, Netherlands, Canada, and Bahrain.

MrSunak said the action was done to weaken the Houthi military and to protect ships around the world.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Royal Air Force typhoons did two very accurate attacks on Houthi sites. One was an airfield used to launch drones and missiles over the Red Sea and the other site was used to launch attack drones.

“The MoD is still looking at the results of the strikes, but it looks like the Houthis may not be able to attack merchant ships as easily anymore. ”

‘Not a lot of’. needed

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said that there are no more air strikes planned for now.

“We believed that the small and necessary attacks last night were important to stop the Houthis from being able to attack our warships in the Red Sea,” he said on BBC Breakfast.

MrHeappey said it was just self-defence and that the government’s legal position was strong.

The Labour Party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, supports the strikes after being briefed by the government on Thursday night.

“He said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast show that the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea need to be stopped. They are attacking commercial ships and important trade routes, and putting civilian lives in danger. We support taking action against them. ”

Retired leader of the British Army Lord Dannatt said on the BBC that the UK and US, who are permanent members of the UN Security Council, have a duty to protect global trade.

We should hope that this is a careful and smart plan that will quickly make it safe for ships to use the Red Sea instead of the expensive route around the Cape of Good Hope.

Lord Ricketts said that attacking the Houthi sites was going to happen because the rebel group didn’t listen to warnings and attacked US and UK naval ships.

“They just couldn’t let this go on,” he said on BBC Radio 4’s Today show. “I believe the US-led group made their efforts big to send a strong message, but also made it clear that it’s only aimed at stopping attacks on ships, not starting a war with the Houthis. ”

In response to the attacks, a Houthi leader warned that the US and UK will soon understand that the strikes on Yemen were a big mistake.

The group says they will keep on attacking ships in the Red Sea that are going to Israel or connected to Israel.

“We say there is no reason for attacking Yemen because they were not a threat to ships in the Red and Arabian Seas,” said spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam.

“The attacks will keep happening on Israeli ships or ones going to the ports of occupied Palestine.

Radio 1 legend Annie Nightingale passes away at age 83

0

Annie Nightingale, who was the first woman to host a show on Radio 1 and stayed on as a host for a long time, has passed away at 83.

Nightingale started working at the station in 1970 and was the only woman on the team for 12 years.

She loved many kinds of music, from rock and punk to electronic and rap.

She was on the radio until the end of last year with Annie Nightingale Presents.

Nightingale also hosted a music show on BBC Two called The Old Grey Whistle Test.

People are praising Nightingale a lot. DJ Annie Mac said she was a pioneer, brave, funny, and really good at her job.

On Instagram, she said: “This woman made a big impact on British TV and radio that will last forever. ” You should not underestimate it.

Zoe Ball, who works on BBC Radio 2, said she was very sad when she heard the news. She said that the person who passed away really loved music and was always looking for new songs and artists that had a big impact on our lives. She interviewed all kinds of musicians, DJs, and broadcasters and helped them get noticed.

Her family said that she died at her home in London after being sick for a short time.

“Annie was a leader and role model for lots of people. ” She still wanted to share her excitement with people all around the world on TV and radio, even after working for the BBC for over 60 years.

“Always remember how much of a good example she turned into. ” Refusing to back down from sexual prejudice and male fear inspired many young women who, like Annie, just wanted to share an awesome song they heard.

Watching Annie perform on TV in the 1970s, especially on the BBC music show The Old Grey Whistle Test, or listening to her play the newest techno music on Radio One shows that she always believed in the magic of rock ‘n’ roll.

They also said there will be a party to remember her in the spring.

‘A leader for women’

Nightingale hosted the Request Show on Radio 1 in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and then started working the late-night shift. She sometimes presented shows on Radio 2, 5 Live and 6 Music, and also made documentaries.

“Every week at work is like a new exciting journey for me. ” “I like it,” she said in July. “People don’t get it. ” Many people stop enjoying pop music when they reach a certain age. I am still curious about where it is heading and the unexpected changes.

The DJ helped many artists start their careers and other DJs like Lauren Laverne, Jo Whiley, Zoe Ball, and Annie Mac recognized him as a pioneer.

Radio 1’s current boss Aled Haydn Jones said, “We are very sad to lose Annie. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. ”

Annie was a really good DJ, radio host, and reporter. She always supported new music and new artists in her job.

She was the first woman DJ on Radio 1 and for over 50 years, she paved the way for other women in the industry and in dance music.

“We lost a well-known person in broadcasting, and things will be different now because of Annie. ”

People in the music industry are saying nice things about Nightingale. DJ Stephanie Hirst said that she was an important woman in radio.

“Annie Nightingale has passed away,” she wrote on X, which used to be called Twitter.

DJ Dave Pearce said she was a very famous broadcaster who opened doors for many female DJs.

Nightingale’s last show was a “best of 2023” three-part series on 19 December.

After playing songs by Dimitri Vegas, Daft Punk, Sam Smith, and Bad Bunny, she ended the show by wishing listeners a “great Christmas”.

She said “lots of love, from me to you” as her last words on Radio 1.

Donald Trump uses his court disputes political showpiece

0

Donald Trump went to a court in New York for a fraud case involving his company, and he wanted to speak his opinions on Thursday.

The judge said the ex-president couldn’t talk in court, but then changed their mind and let him speak for a little bit.

He used the platform to say that the city’s attorney general hates him. Then, he walked out of the courtroom and told reporters that the case was not fair.

But that was not sufficient. He held a news conference in a building he owns at 40 Wall Street, which he is accused of lying about its value.

Mr Trump is going to court like it’s a campaign rally, mixing his legal case with his campaign for president as the US election heats up.

He says that the legal problems he is facing in different places are all part of a plan by Joe Biden, the Democrats, and the White House to prevent him from winning the 2024 election.

Thursday’s event in New York came right after another event in Washington earlier in the week. The ex-president went to a court with his lawyers to say he shouldn’t be tried for trying to change the 2020 election.

While other people running for president in the Republican party are going around Iowa before the first vote on Monday, the former president says he is being forced to stop campaigning by the courts.

“I have to go to court two times this week instead of campaigning because of false accusations in New York and Washington DC,” he wrote in an email asking for donations.

Actually, he didn’t have to go to both of these meetings. He chose to go to two different courtrooms on purpose because he thinks it helps his campaign when people see him in court.

He is correct. The candidate leading the Republican party has turned his many legal issues into a good thing for his campaign. At rallies, press conferences, and in messages to voters and donors, he says he’s being unfairly targeted by political prosecutions in an attempt to prevent him from returning to the White House.

He tells his supporters that the charges against him are not something to be ashamed of, but something to be proud of. He says that the legal problems he’s dealing with are not just about him, but also about the many people in America who support him. One thing he often says in his political speeches is, “They aren’t trying to get rid of me. ” They are trying to catch you. I’m just blocking them.

The 91 criminal charges against him would have ended the campaign of any other candidate. But for him, it has actually helped to bring his supporters into the fight with him.

The Trump campaign has a clear goal and reason for what they’re doing, as it seems they will probably have another election battle with President Joe Biden in November. Trump’s legal troubles also help make sure his campaign has enough money to run smoothly.

He only started to gain support for his re-election after he was charged with a crime in New York last April.

Fundraising emails were sent soon after the news of charges connected to paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, a former porn star, came out in the media. Over $4 million (or 3. 1 million pounds) was raised in the next day.

After he was charged again in June for breaking the law by mishandling secret documents, he received a lot of money again. His campaign was reported to have raised $6. 6 million in just a few days.

When he was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, in August for trying to change the state’s 2020 election results, he had become really good at making a show out of getting charged with crimes.

The campaign brought TV teams with him on his private plane and in his car to show his every move on TV.

This week in Washington, he said that he is being prosecuted because he is winning in the opinion polls against President Biden. Most people think the race is very close.

“I think they believe this is how they will try to win, but that’s not how it works,” said Mr. He said there would be chaos in the country if he couldn’t be re-elected because of the criminal cases against him.

The White House is fighting back. President Biden gave a big speech on January 6th and said that Mr. Trump is a big danger to American democracy.

This argument is a big part of the Democrat’s campaign. It reminds people of the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters three years ago. The Democrats are trying to get people to focus on their positive message about the US economy and the fact that inflation is going down.

But Trump has already changed the argument for his supporters. In Trump’s opinion, Mr. Biden is a threat to democracy.

However, the feelings, especially of people who are not affiliated with a political party, may change once the trials that Mr. Trump is going through actually start.

The 6th of January is very dangerous for the ex-president. Voters will learn all the details about how Mr Trump tried to stay in power after he lost the 2020 election. Surveys show that being found guilty in the case, and the possibility of going to prison, could hurt someone’s chances in politics.

But Trump has a plan for that as well. Keep putting off the trial with as many requests and movements as you can, so that it doesn’t start until after the election on 5 November.

If he goes back to being president, he might tell his department to not pursue the cases against him, or if he’s found guilty, he might try to forgive himself.

Israel claims charge of genocide is untrue

0

Israel has said that South Africa is not telling the truth in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa is accusing Israel of committing genocide.

South Africa gave a big description of what could have happened differently in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, according to Israeli lawyer Tal Becker.

South Africa accuses Israel of killing many Palestinians in the fighting in Gaza.

It also wants the court to make Israel stop its military action.

The ICJ is the top court of the United Nations. The decisions of the ICJ are supposed to be followed by countries like Israel and South Africa, but they cannot be forced to follow them.

Israel is presenting its argument to the court one day after South Africa did.

On Thursday, there was fighting outside the court in The Hague, Netherlands between Palestinian and Israeli supporters. Police tried to keep them apart.

Many people with flags from Palestine gathered outside the Peace Palace, shouting for the fighting to stop. Israeli supporters put up a screen to show pictures of more than 130 hostages still in Gaza.

South Africa says Israel is breaking a promise to stop genocide. Both countries agreed to this promise in 1949.

Israel has been fighting against Hamas, the group that runs Gaza, since October 7th. This was because hundreds of Hamas fighters attacked Israel, killing around 1,300 people and taking about 240 others as hostages back to Gaza.

The health ministry in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, says that over 23,350 people, mostly women and children, have been killed by Israel in the war.

In the beginning of the trial, Tal Becker said that even though it’s sad that civilians are suffering, Hamas is trying to hurt both Israelis and Palestinians, while Israel is trying to protect them.

He said that South Africa has given the court a very wrong and misleading picture of the facts and the law. Their whole case relies on a purposely selected, taken out of context, and manipulative description of the current fighting.

On Thursday, 17 judges in the court listened to lawyer Tembeka Ngcukaitobi from South Africa. He said Israel’s intentions to commit genocide were clear from the way they were conducting their military attacks.

Israel had a plan to “destroy” Gaza, he said, which “has been nurtured at the highest level of state”. Israel planned to “destroy” Gaza, and he said it was a plan made by the state’s highest leaders.

Adila Hassim, who is from South Africa, told the court that the Palestinian people are suffering every day. They are losing their lives, homes, dignity, and humanity.

“Only a court order can make the suffering stop. ”

South Africa said that Israel’s actions are meant to destroy a large part of the Palestinian people.

On Thursday, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, criticized South Africa for not speaking out against the terrible things happening in Syria and Yemen that are being done by people who work with Hamas. He said South Africa is being hypocritical.

“Today everything was upside-down. ” Israel is being accused of killing lots of people, but they say they are fighting against killing lots of people.

A representative for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that Mr. Sunak thinks that South Africa’s case is completely unfair and incorrect.

“The UK government supports Israel’s right to defend itself according to international law,” he said.

The ICJ’s decision on the genocide accusation will just be a point of view, but a lot of people are paying close attention to it.

It may take a long time for a decision to be made, but the court may decide quickly on whether Israel should stop its military actions in response to South Africa’s request.

Netflix pulls down Nayanthara movie following criticism from Hindu organisations

0

An Indian movie that upset Hindu people has been taken off Netflix a few days after it was made available to watch.

Netflix removed the Tamil-language movie Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food because the company that owns the rights asked them to.

The movie features Nayanthara, who plays a Hindu Brahmin woman wanting to be a chef.

She goes against her family’s religious beliefs and eats meat, and she’s learning to cook it.

Many Brahmins do not eat meat because their caste rules do not allow it.

Extremist Hindu groups didn’t like some parts of the movie, like when the actress is shown praying as a Muslim before making biriyani.

Some Hindus were upset because a Muslim character in a scene said that the Hindu god Ram ate meat.

The people who made the movie have not said anything about the problem yet.

Nayanthara and two others linked to the movie are also facing a police case in Madhya Pradesh.

People who strongly believe in Hinduism have said that many movies and shows in the last few years have disrespected their religion. In 2021, the people who made a show called Tandav on Amazon Prime said sorry because they were accused of making fun of Hindu gods.

The movie Annapoorani came out in theaters on December 1st. Critics had different opinions about it. Some liked how it showed a woman from a traditional family going after her dreams, but others thought it had too many unfinished storylines.

India’s Central Board of Film Certification, also called the censor board, approved the movie for public showing.

However, the arguments started a few weeks after people saw it on Netflix, which started showing it on December 29th.

Last week, a man named Ramesh Solanki told the police in Mumbai that he didn’t like some parts of a movie. The police are deciding whether to take action. Solanki says he is a proud Hindu Indian who loves his country. He said this on X, which used to be called Twitter.

According to Reuters, a group called Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) shouted chants outside the Netflix office in Mumbai.

On Thursday, Mr. Solanki and a VHP spokesperson showed a letter of apology from Zee Entertainment Enterprises. This company owns Zee Studios, which helped make the movie Annapoorani.

“We don’t want to offend the Hindu and Brahmin community with our film,” the letter said.

The people making the film will fix any problems and are working with Netflix to take the film off the website until it is changed.

Zee did not reply to the email from the BBC asking for a comment.

Some people were glad that the movie was removed from Netflix, but others were upset about it. Actress Parvathy Thiruvothu said this would create a bad example.

Hichilema Has Raised Political Anger And Outrage By His Attacks On Democracy- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

HICHILEMA HAS RAISED POLITICAL ANGER AND OUTRAGE BY HIS ATTACKS ON DEMOCRACY

Lusaka-12th January 2024

When the State sponsored a so-called Extra-Ordinary Conference against the Patriotic Front and orchestrated it’s legitimacy by recognising the stooge leader and changing records of Office Bearers at the Registrar of Societies and Parliament, we warned that the actions were promoting lawlessness in the country and were a blatant attack against Democracy and the status of Zambia as a multiparty state.

These actions by the State also unnecessary raised political temperature and pressure in the country.

On our part, we kept on advising our loyal members and citizens to remain calm.

However Government attacks have continued by attempting to supplant the leadership of the Patriotic Front and enforcing the marginalisation of the leadership at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other government wings even when matters remain active in court for determination.

These lawless actions perpetrated by the State have raised a deep sense of indignation and outrage in the members of the Party and the general citizens.

To this effect, we have seen videos circulating where, citizens in Eastern Province, randomly accosted and harassed a “Chama Amelika” ( Nkonge Musubilwa) and “Mr.Ground” (Victor Kapungwe) and surrendered them to the Police in Petauke.

This is a sad state of affairs where citizens feel they may not obtain justice and relief from the Police , courts of law and institutions of democracy and begin to take the law into their own hands.

It is imperative that President Hichilema abandons this project to steal, kill and destroy the Patriotic Front and restores the cause of democracy in Zambia.

For example, we have noted that Mr. Miles Sampa has been allowed to hold a big political activity on Saturday 13th January 2024 despite the prevailing cholera outbreak conditions that do not permit and the stringent measures announced against public gatherings.

This is a sad reminder of the earlier activity where the State allowed a similar activity on a sacred day of Independence Day of 24th October 2023.

It is these provocative actions that cause outrage amongst citizens and members of the Party and fuel the urge by citizens to take the law into their own hands.

Welcome and happy new year.

Today we focus on 2024. We are still collecting data on 2023 budget performance. It will require analysis before being shared.

The briefing has been convened to share points of emphasis on the 2024 Budget presented to Parliament on 28th September, 2023, approved on 14th December, 2023, and which came into effect on 1st January, 2024.

The 2024 Budget is K177.9 billion.

It is expected to be funded from 3 key sources, namely:

In the 2024 Budget, the Government has set out key objectives targeted at unlocking Zambia’s economic potential.

These are:

President Hichilema commends DR Congo peace and stability

0

President Hakainde Hichilema has commended the government and opposition political parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for maintaining peace and stability during the just ended General Elections.

Mr Hichilema said this when he received a brief report from the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) Head Enock Kavindele on the status of the just ended general elections in DRC at State House.

Mr Hichilema, who is also Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) organ on politics, defence and security cooperation, commended the opposition parties in DRC for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner.

ZANIS reports that the President observed that Zambia and DRC share the longest border and that peace and stability in the two countries is of paramount importance for the two countries to foster economic development.

The President has since thanked the SADC electoral observation mission team headed by former President Enock Kavindele for accepting to undertake the mission to DRC.
Mr Hichilema also urged Mr Kavindele and his SADC electoral observation mission team to expedite the compilation of the formal report so that he can also report to SADC summit, and that the deadline for submission of the formal report is January 22, 2024.

Meanwhile, Mr Kavindele disclosed that the team worked hard despite the vastness of the country and the large number of candidates who participated in the election.
Mr Kavindele said the country had 26 Presidential candidates but the electoral observation mission only deployed its staff to 14 provinces.

He assured the President that the SADC electoral observation mission will present the formal report before January 22, 2024 to President Hichilema for onward presentation to SADC summit by the President.

President Hakainde Hichilema in his capacity as Chair on the SADC Organ on Politics and defence and security cooperation appointed former President Enock Kavindele as Head of SEOM in DRC.
The mission’s objective was to observe and assess the elections in accordance with the revised SADC Principles and guidelines.

Journalist recounts trauma after being spat on by Chiengi MP

TIMES of Zambia photojournalist has told the Lusaka magistrates Court that he was left traumatized when spitting Chiengi member of parliament Given Katuta and her abettors ganged up on him and harassed him demanding that he deletes her pictures.

Henry Chunza said Katuta referred to him as a son of a dog and spat saliva on him for taking pictures of her at parliament after she was ejected from the chamber by the speaker for her incivility.

Katuta is charged with threatening violence and common assault for harassing Chunza and spitting on him

Testifying before magistrate Idah Phiri, Chunza narrated that On July 21, 2023, he and his colleague Chusa Sichone were assigned by their editor Andrew Sakala to cover parliamentary proceedings.

He said on the date in question, Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti suspended Katuta from the house for seven days due to dishonourable conduct and asked her to take a walk of shame.

Chunza said he positioned himself at the door immediately it was opened by the sergeant at arms to capture the moment.

Chunza narrated that immediately Katuta saw him she charged at him asking who had sent him to work against her.

He said Kututa ordered him to get rid of her images as she shouted “wemwana wambwa iwe”(you son of a dog).

“When she saw me getting pictures of her she pointed a finger at me whilst shouting who are you? why are you getting pictures of me ? Who has sent you to come and get pictures of me ?
She shouted at me she said you son of a dog can you delete pictures of me from that camera,”Chunza recounted.

He said due to fear he decided to escape from the lawmaker and they engaged in a cat and mouse race.

Chunza said in hot pursuit the enraged Katuta gleeked at him liked a spitting cobra.

“She continued pointing at me because of fear I started running down stairs as I was going downstairs she was on top she continued with abusive language upon me, she was chasing me and spat saliva on me whilst saying you son of a dog in bemba, delete those pictures of me,” he narrated.

He said immediately Katuta who is also a clergywoman spat on him he reduced his speed to clean himself of the stinky saliva and Katuta got hold of him with the help of Chawama member of parliament Tasila Lungu whom he came to recognise after the women managed to have the pictures deleted.

Chunza said Katuta and her friends ganged up on him and harassed him.

“She (Katuta) harassed me and wanted to get the camera from me so that she could delete the pictures. It was at this point that other people joined her trying to get the camera from me I couldn’t remember anyone because I was traumatized,” Chunza said.

He told the Court that a police officer came to his rescue as the women’s clamour caught the attention of onlookers.

“A police officer came to my rescue grabbed the camera from me and kept it safe. She tried to get the camera from a police officer, said Chunza.

“The group came to the security office pounced on me and demanded to delete photos from the camera among them was Chawama MP (Tasila Lungu) I saw her when they were leaving. They deleted the photos and Chusa reported the matter to the police.”

In his testimony Chusa who is the acting chief reporter at Times of Zambia confirmed witnessing Katuta harass and spit on Chunza.

“After honorable Katuta was told to take a walk of shame by the speaker, I asked Henry to take pictures of honorable Katuta immediately the sergeant at arms opens the door to the chamber around 09: 15 hours. Upon hon Katuta seeing Henry taking pictures of her, she did not take kindly what Henry had done,”

“She started shouting at him. She demanded that Henry deletes the pictures he had captured of her. In a feat of rage Katuta continued charging at Henry sensing danger I instructed Henry to run downstairs. As he was running downstairs to the ground floor Hon Katuta could not get hold of him because he was very quick. She spat on him as he was running downstairs.”

Sichone said he reported the matter to the police after Chunza was harassed and had his pictures deleted.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S VIEWS ON BUILDING HOMES IN RURAL COMMUNITIES

0

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S VIEWS ON BUILDING HOMES IN RURAL COMMUNITIES

He writes…

My Fellow Citizens,

In May 2023, our administration proudly launched the National Decentralisation Policy and the Zambia Devolution Support programme. This programme provides for smooth transfer of functions from Central Government to Local Authorities countrywide. These initiatives mark a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, signaling our commitment to equitable development across all regions. The increased budgetary allocation towards the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is a testament to this undertaking. Our government envisions a Zambia where opportunities are not concentrated solely in urban centers but are distributed across the entire landscape.

Our beautiful country, with its vast landscapes and abundant resources, has long been home to both rural and urban communities. However, over the years, there has been a growing trend of migration from the rural areas to our bustling cities.

Migration is a natural aspect of human life. It occurs for various reasons, whether economic, social, or educational. Yet, as your President, I am compelled to draw attention to the implications of unchecked and unplanned rural to urban migration. Our fellow citizens in rural areas must not be hasty in their decisions to relocate to the cities without a well-defined purpose, as that could lead to destitution.

We understand the aspirations of our people and we encourage citizens to pursue their dreams where opportunities lead them. However, we wish to assure you that your government is actively creating an enabling environment in rural areas. We urge you, our citizens, to consider the vast potential that lies within the very soil you tread upon. Investing in agriculture is a cornerstone of our rural development strategy. Land in rural areas offers immense potential for various husbandry activities – providing a livelihood that is both sustainable and empowering. We encourage you to explore opportunities in cultivation and breeding of crops and animals. Embrace land as a source of prosperity for yourselves and future generations.

Affordable housing is another critical aspect we are addressing, and this is not limited to the urban settlements. Our commitment to rural development includes initiatives to make decent housing more accessible in these areas. By building homes in rural communities, we are not just providing shelter, but also contributing to the creation of vibrant, self-sustaining villages.

In tandem with our rural development efforts, the Rural Electrification Authority has been further empowered this year to connect more communities to the national power supply grid. This initiative will not only enhance the quality of life in rural areas but also unlock new possibilities for economic activities.

As citizens, you play a pivotal role in the success of these initiatives. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the benefits of our rural development programs are fully realized. Before considering relocation to urban centers, we implore you, beloved citizens, to explore and harness the opportunities available in our rural communities.

May God bless you all, and may God bless our beautiful country

ZAMBIA NATIONAL SERVICE PARTNERS RAINBOW MILLING TO TACKLE HIGH MEALIE MEAL PRICES IN EASTERN PROVINCE

…..the partnership is aimed at addressing the escalating mealie meal prices in the region.

Lusaka… Friday January 12, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) has announced a successful partnership with Rainbow Milling, a private milling company in Chipata, Eastern Province.

ZNS Chief of Marketing & Public Relations Colonel Mable Mulenga Nyone says the partnership is aimed at addressing the escalating mealie meal prices in the region.

Col Nyone says the Milling Plant has a milling capacity of 120 tonnes per day, translating into daily production output of 4000 x 25 kilogram bags of mealie meal.

“The collaborative effort underscores ZNS’ commitment to complementing Government’s efforts of ensuring food availability and affordability in the country. ZNS will ensure steady and adequate supply of the staple commodity to the residents of Eastern Province by optimizing the full production capacity of the plant for speedy distribution of the commodity to all needy areas,” she said.

“The Service’s appeal to residents, as the initiative is rolled out, is for them to collaborate with the Government by ensuring that mealie meal remains within the boundaries of the country as it is meant to address the challenges they have faced in the recent past. We urge them to be vigilant and report any SUSPiCiOUS activities related to smuggling or abuse of the initiative. Their cooperation is crucial to maintaining the integrity of this well-intentioned effort. Residents are further encouraged to report any suspicious activities to 0977827057 or to any Zambia National Service Officers in their vicinity.”

Col Nyone encouraged businessmen and women interested in trading in Eagles mealie meal, to come forward and partner with the Institution.

“However, the Service wishes to emphasize the importance of adhering to the prescribed price ceilings which are 1(200.00 for roller meal and K230.OO for breakfast. The Institution believes that responsible business practices are essential to the SUCCeSS of this initiative. Anyone who will be found selling Eagles mealie meal above the recommended prices risks losing the consignment with no recourse to compensation,” she stated.

From $40m to borrowing money for fast food, here’s how T-Pain lost all of his money

T-Pain, born Faheem Rasheed Najm, is not only a musician but an entrepreneur. Like many of his contemporaries such as Jay-Z, Akon, and Rihanna, he has an interest in multiple businesses. He first got into music as a child when he spent time with a music producer friend.

He would later convert his bedroom into a makeshift music studio. In the early 2000s, he made a grand entry into the music industry with a collaboration with Akon. He later released his debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, in late 2005 which became an instant hit globally.

Since then, he has featured major artists such as Chris Brown, Flo Rida, and DJ Khaled as well as winning the Grammys twice with his collaboration with Jamie Foxx and controversial rapper Kanye West.

His success in the music industry brought in quite a lot of money. In his own words, he became wealthy. However, a series of bad spending habits and investment decisions left him with zero dollars in the bank.

In a startling interview recently, the 35-year-old revealed that he had to borrow money from friends to treat his children to a Burger King meal. According to him, he once had $40 million in his account but lost all due to poor investment decisions and spending habits.

“Now I know what the high end is and what the low end is,” he said. “I’ve been mega-rich, I’ve been super broke, right in the middle of thinking I was mega-rich, and then got rich again, and you know learned how to really give a s— about money,” the rapper said in an interview with the radio show “The Breakfast Club.”

T-Pain disclosed that his most expensive purchase, apart from his home, was a $1.2 million Bugatti. That Bugatti, which he even abandoned after five months due to a fault, was the beginning of his financial woes. “At that point, I was running out of money and my accountant was like ‘You just bought a Bugatti. You’re out of money.’ And I was like ‘No, I’m not. I got this house I want to get, this other house for my assistants, my runners, my producers and stuff,’” T-Pain shared.

He said that after buying that house, he just started “going crazy with the money.”

“I wasn’t paying attention to it. I thought if I didn’t have access to my own accounts that I wouldn’t have to look at it.”

Essentially, T-Pain and his team squandered money on real estate. “I was letting my manager do it and he was way more optimistic than I was,” the rapper said. “He would buy complete dumps and think that we could just paint.”

T-Pain shared that they never sold the properties purchased and things got really bad.

However, “The Masked Singer” singer claimed in the interview that he is currently financially stable, adding that he does not intend to chase after the $40 million. “Once you give as— about the money you’re making, then you feel much better about your accomplishments, you feel much better about what you’re doing, you start paying attention to your work that makes you money,” he said.

In addition, T-Pain said he has learned about sound financial management skills and paying attention to projects he is executing. He added that he has found a way to balance this time between his family and his hustles.

“I’m not chasing the $40 [million],” he said. “The money I’m making now, I’m just making it, I’m not trying to make it. That $40 million, I was hustling, I needed to be on everybody’s record, and every record gotta go No. 1, I gotta do this work. And at that time, I didn’t know my family at all.”

According to him, his proudest moment has been providing for his wife Amber Najm and three kids Lyriq, Muziq and Kaydnz.

“Awards are always great, but in the long run, it doesn’t really say who you are. I’m more concerned about my family, my kids, and my wife and making sure I can provide,” he said.

Why Zaloumis and Chipenzi at ECZ will not announce the defeat of HH in 2026: ECZ is now just a political collaborator of the UPND in power- Dr. Chris ZUMANI

0

Why Zaloumis and Chipenzi at ECZ will not announce the defeat of HH in 2026: ECZ is now just a political collaborator of the UPND in power

By Dr. Chris ZUMANI Zimba

1. Stubborn Stakeholders opposition and rejection to Chipenzi and Zaloumis at ECZ

On 13th June, 2021, New Congress Party President Peter Chanda branded Mr Chipenzi, then GEARS Initiative executive director for justifying UPND political violence on Patriotic Front members and marketers in Mandevu Constituency as ‘a known fully-fledged UPND sympathizer’.

In justifying the UPND violent behavior, Mr Chipenzi as GEARS boss then said, “panga for panga of self defence, is what the UPND used is in line with the Constitution and section 17 of the penal code”. Surprisedly, Chipenzi was trying to justify UPND’s criminal conduct before the 2021 Presidential and General Elections as GEARS boss and elections expert.

On 28th November, 2022, News Digger’s Angela Munchishi did a story entitled “Chipenzi and Zaloumis are UPND, ECZ will never hold credible polls”. To date, this news headline for Diggers Newspapers against Chipenzi and Zaloumis stands both factual and accurate before the eyes of all Zambians.

Mr. Nasson Msoni, President of All peoples Congress (APC) was quoted on 28th November, 2022 by “Zambian Observer” in their article titled “Zaloumis, Chipenzi Are UPND Stooges- Msoni”. This is the permanent worry and troublesome position of all opposition politicians, independent scholars, NGOs and Zambians everywhere.

Speaking to News Diggers on 28th November, 2022, late Honorable Tutwa Ngulube, a prominent Lusaka lawyer and PF MCC observed and argued that “the appointment of Mwangala Zaloumis and McDonald Chipenzi as ECZ chairperson and commissioner respectively was wrong because the two were UPND members and would not be neutral in their duties”

On 30th November, 2023, Dr. Chishimba Kambwili warned HH that “My Brother President Hakainde Hichilema, there are so many people you can appoint as chairpersons for ECZ, but those people should not be Mrs Zaloumis and Mr Chipenzi. I have nothing against both. But she and Chipenzi are partisan affiliated to the United Party for National Development (UPND)”.

On 13th December, 2022, Copperbelt-based outspoken Catholic Priest Fr. Augustine Mwewa observed that “Chipenzi has been defending UPND even when they are supposed to speak. He has been like a spokesperson for UPND and he is so emotional on UPND matters. Sometimes he tries to be objective but he is politically inclined. He does not qualify to be in ECZ,” he noted.

”If you want Zambia with no tension and want to regard ECZ as fair, do not appoint the two individuals….If any country does not trade carefully on the issue of electoral bodies, democracy is bound to fail,” Chishimba Kambwili openly warned president HH in November, 2022.

The list of stakeholders opposing and denouncing McDonald Chipenzi and Mrs Mwangala Zaloumis at ECZ is endless and cannot be covered in one article as this one. Apart from HH and UPND members, Zambians from all walks of life are against their presence at ECZ. This fact is known by everyone.

Just ask key political party leaders outside UPND such as Edith Nawakwi, Fred M’membe, GBM, Bowman Lusambo, Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa, Saboi Imboela, Harry Kalaba, Jackson Silavwe, Sean Tembo, Mweenda Kasonde, Chishala Kateka, Chilufya Tayali, Raphael Nakachinda, etc: they all don’t want to hear these two names around ECZ as they deem them politically poisonous and sure evils to Zambia’s democracy.

2. Our critical analysis and observations to Chipenzi and Zaloumis at ECZ

For most Zambians, having Mr. McDonald Chipenzi and Madam Mwangala Zaloumis as top commissioners at ECZ is not only strange, unprofessional, unethical politically and dangerous, but that their presence brutally undermines the integrity, credibility, objectivity and neutrality of such a crucial body entrusted to administer elections in our country.

With the two ruling party members being anointed as top commissioners at Zambia’s electoral body, ECZ will remain a political collaborator of the UPND and the chances of witnessing credible, fair and transparent elections in our country will never be guaranteed in 2026 and beyond.

Everything about Zaloumis and Chipenzi at ECZ is true with Father Mwewa’s views, a Copperbelt-based Catholic Priest who in December, 2022 stressed and warned that “appointing politically inclined commissioners to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) appears like a scheme to rig future elections”.

In 2026 and as long as Mwangala Zaloumis and McDonald Chipenzi remain at the top of ECZ, Zambians must know that the two will make the announcement of HH’s defeat impossible if he loses because they are members of the ruling party and Bally is not just their appointing boss but also their preferred presidential candidate on UPND ticket.

In this press statement on 28th November, 2022, Mr. Nasson Msoni observed that “No one believes that having persons with declared political interest and sitting in the Commission will give the institution the degree of the legitimacy required to conduct and oversee free and fair elections. In a nutshell it is not too late for the President to reflect on his choice of the appointments and do the right thing”, he argued.

Yes, if Zambia is to prepare for free, fair and credible elections in 2026, the president has no choice but to revise and reverse the composition of ECZ at commission level by boldly removing and replacing politically inclined individuals like McDonald Chipenzi and Mwangala Zaloumis.

If we accept known UPND members at ECZ today, we should accept the fact that 2026 presidential elections will not be free, fair and credible in Zambia because, there is no way party cadres will disappoint their ruling party, their appointing boss, their presidential candidate and their political appeasement jobs.

3. What else makes Chipenzi and Zaloumis unfit to be top ECZ Commissioners?

When it comes to Madam Mwangala Zaloumis, l do not need to research and write anything much about her membership and affiliation to the ruling party. I have just attached nice pictures for her in full party regalia on different party events: things speak for themselves for HH’s Chairperson for our ECZ

On 12th August 2015, Charles Sakala reported on ‘All Africa News’ that the Grand Coalition on the People Driven Constitution ‘secretly’ removed Macdonald Chipenzi from his position as spokesperson because of his association with the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND), a matter that threatened to tarnish the image of the strictly non-partisan group.

On 10th February, 2016, Lusaka Times reported that Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) Executive Director then, MacDonald Chipenzi was challenged to step down from his position following reports that he had applied to contest Siavonga parliamentary seat under the UPND. This was confirmed by PF Mandevu Constituency Chairman Joseph Tamba then who revealed that Chipenzi had applied to contest the seat on UPND ticket.

The truth is that, this McDonald Chipenzi consistently opposed and mounted unwarranted attacks on Sata, Lungu and the PF government throughout his civil society life both at FODEP and GEARS simply because he was both a zealot opposition party sympathizer and at some point top most preferred candidate for Siavonga constituency on UPND ticket.

4. Our partisan ECZ, our diminishing hope for true Democracy and peace

For the first time in the history of this institution, ECZ has had the most controversial and questionable conducts and actions since August 2021. This is because the impact of partisan politics is at its peak and highest levels at ECZ today.

What happened to PF’s Hon Joseph Malanji and Hon Bowman Lusambo in 2022 is a savagery and unpleasant attack to our democracy and ECZ was the lead hangman for the ruling party. This remains clear evidence and classical example that ECZ is no longer our hope for democracy, peace and national unity as a country especially with known party cadres like Zaloumis and Chipenzi as its bosses.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia is established under Article 229 of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016. The Commission came into existence as an Electoral Management Body (EMB) in 1996.

In accordance with Article 229 (2) of the Constitution of Zambia, the Commission has the mandate to carry out the following functions:

1. implement the electoral process;
2. conduct elections and referenda;
3. register voters;
4. settle minor electoral disputes, as prescribed;
5. regulate the conduct of voters and candidates;
6. accredit observers and election agents, as prescribed;
7. delimit electoral boundaries; and
8. perform such other functions as prescribed

“We all fell asleep because there was a lack of oxygen …some of the players couldn’t be woken up”- Gambia coach Tom Sainfeit speaks on the plane incident

0

The Gambia squad travelling to Ivory Coast for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations “could have died” during a flight that was aborted, coach Tom Saintfiet claimed.

The Air Cote d’Ivoire flight turned around just minutes after leaving the Gambian capital Banjul on Wednesday.

Saintfiet believes there was a lack of oxygen, saying conditions prompted many of the delegation to fall asleep.

The coach praised quick thinking by the pilot for keeping his team safe.

Officials from the airline confirmed there had been a pressurisation issue.

Saintfiet told BBC Sport Africa: “The local crew said there was a problem with the air conditioning before we took off but that it would be all fine when we took off.

“After a few minutes, it was very hot in the plane.

“We all fell asleep because there was a lack of oxygen – some of the players couldn’t be woken up. The pilot noticed and we had to return.

“People got headaches and if the flight had gone on for another 30 minutes, the whole team would have died. The strange thing is that the oxygen masks didn’t come out – it’s good that the pilot realised that this was a deadly situation and so turned back.

“But we are still in shock.”

Air Cote d’Ivoire is the official airliner of Afcon 2023, and a statement from the company said the air crew decided to turn back because of a pressurisation problem.

It added that the issue could have been resolved by a mechanic on the ground, but that the flight was ultimately cancelled because of the impact earlier delays had on the crew’s working hours.

Saintfiet suggested the passengers could have been facing carbon monoxide poisoning, but Gambia Football Federation (GFF) president Lamin Kaba Bajo said there was no evidence to support that remark.

“I never felt it and it’s not clinically, scientifically or medically proven,” Kaba Bajo told the BBC.

“Those are individual observations and perceptions, but there was not anything like that. I was almost sitting next to the coach and I didn’t see anyone collapse.

“I know that people, when a plane takes off, they sleep.

“Some people were dozing, sleeping, but we landed safely. There was not a single incident, we all came down and boarded the bus to go back to the terminal.”

The incident came four months after the Gambian team, who will face defending champions Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea in Group C, were caught up in September’s devastating earthquake in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, when over 2,000 people died.

Despite the experience on board the aborted flight, The Gambia chose to train upon their return to Banjul on Wednesday night, even though some of the squad were unable to take part.

“Some players could not train because of what happened. They still have headaches and that is worrying, while some of the players are still dizzy,” said Saintfiet.

“The team requested to train as we had been travelling overnight from Saudi Arabia to return home on Sunday, and Monday as well.

“We trained in a bid to release the stress.”

Aborted flight ‘unacceptable’

The Gambia, who reached the quarter-finals of their maiden Nations Cup two years ago despite being the lowest-ranked team, are due to face neighbours Senegal on Monday in their opening game.

The Scorpions, with their plans rearranged, were set to travel on an Airbus 319 provided by Air Cote d’Ivoire, departing Banjul for Yamoussoukro at 16:00 GMT on Thursday.

A GFF statement said Gambia President Adama Barrow had intervened to obtain permission to land in the Ivorian capital rather than the initially intended destination of Abidjan.

Saintfiet said he and team captain Omar Colley had refused to return to the same plane for the flight across West Africa.

“We want to fight and die for the country on the football pitch but not off it,” the Belgian coach said.

Kaba Bajo said the players had not been asked to fly on the same plane again, but on a similar Bombardier model to the one used in the initial flight.

Video footage posted on social media by one of the squad, former Manchester United youngster Saidy Janko, showed heavily sweating players leaving the plane after its return to The Gambia.

Now based in Switzerland, the Young Boys player called the situation “unacceptable”.

“As soon as we entered the small plane hired to fly us, we noticed the immense heat that left us dripping in sweat,” he wrote on Instagram.

“It was assured to us by the crew that the air condition[ing] would start once in the sky.

“The inhumane heat mixed with the occurring lack of oxygen left many people with strong headaches and extreme dizziness. Furthermore, people started falling deeply asleep minutes after take-off.”

Janko also praised the pilot, saying the consequences could have been a lot worse.

“Knowing what could have happened, if we would have been exposed to the situation for any longer – in an airplane, running out of oxygen,” he said.

In a statement, the GFF said that “preliminary investigations indicated that there was a loss of cabin pressure and oxygen”.

Bonus row for Scorpions
Wednesday’s incident came against a backdrop of tension between the players and the GFF in a row over bonuses.

The players had boycotted a training session while demanding a bonus payment for qualifying for their second Nations Cup after decades of failing to do so beforehand.

Local sports minister Bakary Badjie said that players had received 5,000 euros each for taking part in a training camp in Saudi Arabia earlier this month and that they had agreed to waive a qualification bonus in exchange for diplomatic passports, which have been received.

Gambia captain Omar Colley told local media on Wednesday that the GFF has received just over some 500,000 euros from the government, with Badjie having earlier said that the situation had gone as high up as President Barrow.

This money should then filter down to the players in the next few days.

In September, The Gambia secured their spot at the 2023 Afcon with a 2-2 against Congo in a match played in Marrakesh less than 48 hours after the earthquake.

Centre-back Colley said at the time that he could not celebrate their qualification given the trauma suffered during their time in Morocco.- SOURCE:BBC

Five things to remember from Haley-DeSantis debate

Republican presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley had a heated debate on Wednesday, arguing with each other just before the Iowa caucuses.

Donald Trump, the top candidate for the party’s 2024 nomination, decided not to go to an event and instead did a town hall on Fox News at the same time.

Iowa is the first state to hold a contest to pick the Republican candidate who will likely run against Democratic President Joe Biden in the November general election.

Mr DeSantis and Ms. Haley are not doing well in the Iowa polls compared to Mr. They are hoping that if they come in second place in the state on Monday, it will help their campaigns.

The two people started arguing right away by saying mean things to each other.

Mr DeSantis, who is 45 years old, started the event by calling his opponent a “dishonest politician who says what people want to hear. ”

Ms Haley responded quickly and accused Mr. DeSantis of telling many “lies”.

“She said you’ll learn about many lies Ron told. ”

There have been four Republican debates before this one, but this one was different because it was just between two people. It was hosted by CNN at Drake University and there were a lot of direct attacks and arguments.

Both of them wanted to win before the Republican voters in Iowa choose their favorite candidate on Monday. The main idea of the night. Keep attacking

2) They investigated Trump’s past actions.

As the two people running for president argued on stage, the old president was having a gathering with his followers three miles (5km) away.

It was no surprise that people started asking where he was and talking about how he was winning in the polls during the debate. DeSantis said the former president was focused on his own problems and not on helping American families.

He said Mr. Trump said a lot of nonsense on social media and made people unsure if he can handle the legal problems he is dealing with.

Ms Haley once again said she doesn’t think Mr. Trump is the right president to continue.

Both of them spoke more strongly against him than before, criticizing how he dealt with things like the pandemic, border security, and relations with China.

At his own event in Des Moines, Mr. Trump criticized both candidates and bragged about the high levels of support he has in Iowa.

Also, his campaign sent many emails criticizing Ms. Haley and Mr. DeSantis during the debate. They talked about Ms. Haley’s foreign policy and Mr. DeSantis’ record on pandemic.

3) They disagreed about immigration.

Border security and immigration were brought up many times, showing that it is a main concern for Republican voters in Iowa and the US.

Mr DeSantis told the people not to believe Ms Haley when it comes to immigration.

“He said it’s like letting the fox watch over the henhouse,” as he pointed to her earlier comments about calling “illegal aliens” disrespectful.

Ms Haley talked in a more detailed way about the reasons why people move from Central and South America and mentioned her experience as a former ambassador to the United Nations.

However, she did say that people who are in the country illegally should be sent back because they didn’t wait their turn.

4) Ukraine was a place where there was a lot of tension.

The fight in Ukraine was a big problem during the debate, and both candidates argued about their views on the war.

Ms Haley criticized Mr. DeSantis for first supporting US money for Ukraine, and then changing his mind.

“He doesn’t tell anyone what he believes,” she said.

“Let me explain why Ukraine is important. ” “This country loves freedom,” she said. “It’s a friend of America and wants to prevent war with US support. ”

Mr DeSantis said that the war needed to stop, and he thinks that people like Nikki Haley care more about Ukraine’s border than our border in the south.

The fighting in Ukraine shows a bigger division in the Republican Party. They can’t agree on what the US should do about foreign policy and helping Ukraine.

5) DeSantis received more applause, but Haley said she won.

About 200 people were at the event in Des Moines. They were not very loud, but Mr. DeSantis got more applause than anyone else.

Some of his comments, like when he said Ms. Haley has a problem with shooting herself in the foot, got a good reaction from the people in the room.

This is not surprising because Iowa is seen as better for him than other states like New Hampshire, where Nikki Haley is expected to do well in the second Republican contest.

Ms Haley had some memorable moments and got a big cheer when she talked about the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 as a “bad day”.

Later, her team and supporters said they saw the event as a win that will help her in the New Hampshire primary.

“Tonight went well,” said the congressman from Texas. Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, who are running for president, had a heated debate on Wednesday before the Iowa caucuses. They argued with each other.

Donald Trump, who is leading in the race to be the party’s nominee for 2024, decided not to go to an event and instead had a town hall on Fox News at the same time.

Iowa is the first state to hold a contest to decide which Republican will run for president against Democrat Joe Biden in November.

Mr DeSantis and Ms. Haley are not doing well in the Iowa polls compared to Mr. They are hoping to come in second place in the state on Monday to give their campaigns a boost.

A short guide to choosing the US Republican candidate.

This is what we found out when they competed on the stage in Des Moines.

The two people started arguing right away by saying mean things to each other.

Mr DeSantis, who is 45 years old, started by saying that his opponent is a politician who says what people want to hear but doesn’t mean it.

Ms Haley then responded and directly criticized what she said were Mr DeSantis’s frequent false statements.

She said you will learn about many lies that Ron has told.

There were four Republican debates before this one. But, this one was different because it was just two people debating. It was hosted by CNN at Drake University and the candidates had more arguments and direct attacks.

It looked like both were trying to win big before the Republicans in Iowa start the next part of the race and choose their favorite presidential candidate on Monday. The theme for the night is “attack, attack, attack”.

Afcon 2023: Gambia squad ‘could have died’ on aborted flight to Ivory Coast

0

The Gambia delegation have refused to return to the same plane for their trip to Ivory Coast
The Gambia squad travelling to Ivory Coast for the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations “could have died” from carbon monoxide poisoning on their plane, coach Tom Saintfiet has told the BBC.

The Air Cote d’Ivoire flight turned around just nine minutes after leaving the Gambian capital Banjul on Wednesday because of a lack of oxygen in the plane, which prompted many of the delegation to fall asleep.

Saintfiet praised the quick thinking of the pilot for keeping his team safe.

“The local crew said there was a problem with the air conditioning before we took off but that it would be all fine when we took off,” Saintfiet told BBC Sport Africa.

The incident came four months after the Gambian team, who will face defending champions Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea in Group C, were caught up in September’s devastating earthquake in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, when over 2,000 people died.

Despite the experience on board the aborted flight, The Gambia chose to train upon their return to Banjul on Wednesday night, even though some of the squad were unable to do so.

“Some players could not train because of what happened. They still have headaches and that is worrying, while some of the players are still dizzy,” added Saintfiet.

“The team requested to train as we had been travelling overnight from Saudi Arabia to return home on Sunday, and Monday as well.

“We trained in a bid to release the stress.”

The Gambia, who reached the quarter-finals of their maiden Nations Cup two years ago despite being the lowest-ranked team, are due to face neighbours Senegal on Monday in their opening game.

However, Saintfiet said it is unclear when the Scorpions will now travel to Ivory Coast, after refusing to return to the same plane for the flight across West Africa.

“We have been asked to fly on the same plane to Ivory Coast but captain Omar Colley and I have refused,” the Belgian explained.

“If we don’t get a different plane, we will return home and not go to Afcon.

“We want to fight and die for the country on the football pitch but not off it.”

Video footage posted on social media by one of the squad, former Manchester United youngster Saidy Janko, shows heavily-sweating players leaving the plane after its return to The Gambia.

Now based in Switzerland, the Young Boys striker called the situation “unacceptable”.

“As soon as we entered the small plane hired to fly us, we noticed the immense heat that left us dripping in sweat,” he wrote.

In a statement, the Gambian FA (GFA) said that “preliminary investigations indicated that there was a loss of cabin pressure and oxygen”.

Bonus row for Scorpions Wednesday’s incident came against a backdrop of tension between the players and the GFA in a row over bonuses.

Gambia captain Omar Colley told local media on Wednesday that the GFA has received just over some 500,000 euros from the government, with Badjie having earlier said that the situation had gone as high up as Gambia President Adama Barrow.

This money should then filter down to the players in the next few days.

In September, The Gambia secured their spot at the 2023 Afcon with a 2-2 against Congo in a match played in Marrakesh less than 48 hours after the earthquake.

Centre-back Colley said at the time that he could not celebrate their qualification given the trauma suffered during their time in Morocco.

Tom Saintfiet has been coach of The Gambia since July 2018

List of popular Nigerian pastors hit with sex allegations

0

TB Joshua, Chris Oyakhilome, Biodun Fatoyinbo and Johnson Suleman
Nigerians have witnessed tons of sexual allegations levelled against their favorite pastors, particularly, with their staff.

In the wake of the BBC’s exposé on the late prophet TB Joshua who has been accused of fraud, rape among others, we take a look at other pastors who have suffered similar fate.

Check out the list below:

Prophet T.B Joshua -2024

The late founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) died in 2021 but has recently been accused of abuse and torture of multiple women in a BBC documentary.

Several individuals accounted that they experienced physical torture and violence allegedly perpetrated by the late cleric, including individuals being whipped and chained and child abuse, to mention a few.

Several women have claimed to be sexually assaulted, while some are alleging that they were consistently raped for some time within the church premises.

Also, there were allegations of multiple forced abortions within SCOAN resulting from the alleged rapes.

A woman claimed that she went through termination five different times.

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo – 2013, 2018

Biodun Fatoyinbo, the leader and founder of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), was accused by a blogger, Ese Walter, of an affair in 2013.

In 2018, the controversy gained prominence when Bukola Dakolo accused the cleric of rape, leading to a public uproar.

Apostle Johnson Suleman -2017

The spiritual leader of the Omega Fire Ministries was accused by Stephanie Otobo in 2017 of impregnating her.

However, Stephanie later admitted that some politicians paid her to tarnish the pastor’s image.

The cleric was then challenged on the perception that he was a spiritually equipped pastor.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome -2014

Oyakhilome, the founder of the Christ Embassy, was in the headlines in 2014 when he separated from his wife, Anita Oyaakhilome.

Anita alleged that the pastor was involved in adultery and unreasonable behaviours and that they were the reasons that she and Pastor Chris had to dissolve the marriage.

The cleric denied the allegations, saying external influences orchestrated them.

Rev. Ken Oyakhilome – 2014

After the crash of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s marriage, reports have alleged that his brother, Rev. Ken, allegedly impregnated a South African member of the church.

It was alleged that the congregation of the church saw the affair as an open secret.

The church subsequently took measures to hush the scandal.

You’re wasting your time, Museveni tells Joe Biden

0

In an attempt to deflect international pressure over human rights abuses, Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sought to reassure Ugandans that all was well days after US President Joe Biden suspended the country from the Ush40 billion (about $10.5 million) trade deal.

Biden removed Uganda, Central African Republic, Gabon and Niger from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), saying they did not meet the requirements to be part of the export deal.

A December 2023 notice from the Office of the Trade Representative confirmed the termination, which now excludes Ugandan-made products from preferential treatment in the US market.

“I have determined that Central African Republic, Gabon, Niger and Uganda do not meet the requirements described in section 506A (a)(1) of the Trade Act,” the statement read.

“Accordingly, I have decided to terminate the designations of the Central African Republic, Gabon, Niger, and Uganda as beneficiary sub-Saharan African countries for purposes of section 506A of the Trade Act, effective January 1, 2024.”

In a televised address from Rwakitura in Western Uganda, Museveni on Tuesday night assured Ugandans that such trade restrictions and pressures “have no meaning” because Uganda is a nation of “wealth creators”.

Unity of Ugandans
“Some of the people who get carried away by linking up with foreign interests forget our strengths. For somebody to come and say ‘unless you follow what I’m telling you I’ll not…..’ they are really not serious,” he said.

According to Museveni, the unity of Ugandans is enough to withstand such external economic pressures.

“If we divide ourselves then we’ll be weak, but if we don’t divide ourselves then there’s nothing we cannot do…Those putting pressure on us are just wasting their time,” said Museveni, who was flanked by his wife Janet Museveni and assistants.

“Foreign pressure has no meaning. Therefore, what we can do is fight corruption; the usual problems, concentrate on regional integration…. But internationally, we can trade with those people who respect us.”

Kampala’s removal from Agoa, a US trade preference law enacted on May 18, 2000 that provides duty-free access to the US market for more than 6,000 products from beneficiary countries, follows a series of other sanctions.

They include travel restrictions on top government officials and threats of aid cuts, imposed on Uganda after the passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Act.

The US termed the law as “retrogressive” and anti-human rights.

Swedish defense officials warn citizens to get ready for war

0

Two important defense officials have told Swedes to get ready for war, which has made some people worried and accused them of being too dramatic.

Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said at a conference that a war could happen in Sweden.

The military leader, Gen Micael Byden, agrees with the message and thinks all Swedes should get ready in their minds for the possibility.

However, politicians who are against it have disagreed with how the warnings were given.

Former prime minister Magdalena Andersson said on Swedish TV that the security situation is serious, but war is not about to happen right now.

The kids’ rights group Bris said that its national phone line doesn’t usually get calls about the chance of war. This week, many young people called us worried because they saw news or posts on TikTok about it.

“Bris spokeswoman Maja Dahl told the BBC that this was carefully planned and not something said without thinking. ” “They should have given information for kids when they share information for adults. ”

The comments from the civil defence minister and military chief are being seen as a strong warning, even though they were very serious.

After more than 200 years of peace, Sweden is close to joining the Nato defense alliance. It just needs approval from Turkey’s parliament and then from Hungary.

The leader said what he said was not something new.

He went to the eastern part of Ukraine a month ago. Sweden is one of the countries helping to train Ukrainian pilots. Stockholm is thinking about sending powerful Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

“I don’t want to scare people. I just want more people to think about their own lives and what they need to do,” said Gen Byden in an interview with Aftonbladet newspaper.

Finland is now part of Nato, and Russian officials are saying it will be the first to have problems if things get worse with Nato.

The civil defence minister of Sweden wants people to be aware of what is happening but not to worry too much. He asked local officials, emergency planners, and people to help.

MrBohlin said he can’t sleep because he thinks things are moving too slowly. He said this at the Society and Defence conference on Sunday.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, asked Sweden to work with Ukraine and other countries to make weapons and become stronger together during a conference.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that by 2024, Sweden will spend 2% of its money on military defense, which is double the amount it spent in 2020.

Oscar Jonsson, a defence expert, said that the warnings from defence leaders were blown out of proportion and that 90% of the concerns came from frustration that not enough was being done to improve civil and military defence.

“He said that time is short and the goal was to urge agencies, people, and departments to take action,” he told the media.

“The Swedish military is very skilled, but it is not very large. ” The new defence bill says we need to create 3. 5 military units, but Ukraine had 28 when the war began.

General Byden is telling people to get ready for war, and this comes right after another warning from the head of Poland’s National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, who said that to avoid a war with Russia, countries near Nato should start getting ready for a confrontation within the next three years.

He said that a report from a German group about preparing for a Russian attack in six years was too hopeful.

Oscar Jonsson, an expert from the Swedish Defence University, said that for a war to happen, a few things would need to happen first: Russia’s war in Ukraine would need to stop, its military would need time to get stronger again, and Europe would need to not have support from the US military.

He said that everything was possible.

Police in Australia thwart an alleged rapper murder plot

0

The police in Australia have accused two men of planning to harm four members of the rap group OneFour.

The two men, known as Brandon Maseuli and Yousef Rima, are part of a criminal group that started in Lebanon and operates internationally.

The police said the group accepts jobs to do dangerous things like killing people and taking others.

Maseuli, 26, and Rima, 20, were arrested in Sydney on Thursday and now have to deal with a number of charges.

They did things like planning to kill someone, taking someone away, leading a group of criminals, and doing illegal things with drugs and stealing.

Officials have requested permission to arrest a 22-year-old man who they think is in another country.

The police said that Maseuli and Rima planned to kill four important men in Sydney for someone else.

Four members of the drill rap group OneFour have been named as the targets. Their names are Jerome “J Emz” Misa, Pio “YP” Misa, Spencer “Spenny” Magalogo and Dahcell “Celly” Ramos. It’s not clear why they didn’t go after the fifth member, Salec “Lekks” Su’a.

The OneFour members were targeted because they had a problem with another group. This other group may have hired a criminal gang in Sydney to hurt the rappers. The police told the Sydney Morning Herald about this.

The police found out about the suspected plan while looking into the Sydney group that Maseuli and Rima belong to. They also say that it was connected to many kidnappings, including one involving a large amount of cocaine.

Both people accused of a crime went to court in Liverpool on Thursday. They were not allowed to leave jail until their trial.

OneFour, a popular rap group from Australia, has had many encounters with the police. Their songs often have sad and aggressive words, which the police say can make people want to act violently.

They had to stop a big trip around the country in 2019 because the police were worried about safety.

Masebo is Hichilema’s archilles heel, a fatal weakness, that has formed as part of his quick downfall- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Masebo’s hold on Hichilema, dangerous

…his archilles heel, a fatal flaw that is forming his downfall..

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

● The country has faced a persistent critical shortage of medicines, medical supplies and laboratory re-agents. Despite repeated cries of help, Masebo dismissed such assertions by stating that stakeholders were lying or malicious, or health workers and pharmacists were stealing the drugs.

It took a Report by the Committee on Health, Community Development and Social Services probing the critical shortage of medicines and medical supplies was the truth established.

Besides many weakness of the health sector exposed in the Report, a key finding was that Zambia’s availability of essential medicines and medical supplies in public health facilities countrywide was between 42%-53.1% contrary to the recommended WHO stock levels of 75% and above.

Masebo rejected the Report.

The Committee consisted of Dr Christopher Kalila, MP (Chairperson); Mrs Majorie
Nakaponda, MP (Vice Chairperson); Mr Monty Chinkuli, MP; Dr Aaron Daniel Mwanza, MP; Mr Luhamba Mwene, MP; Mr Joseph Simumpuka Munsanje, MP; Mr Peter Phiri, MP; Mr Paul Chala, MP; Mr Menyani Zulu, MP; and Mr Leevan Chibombwe, MP.

President Hichilema took no action and supported Masebo on the matter.

Despite the continued shortage of medicines crisis, President Hichilema recently proudly declared that stock levels of essential medicines now stood at 93% as reported to him by Masebo!

● Mr. Mcebisi Mlonzi, the chairman of TFM Holdings PTY LTD of South Africa that was solicited to build infectious disease hospitals in Southern, Western and Northwestern provinces revealed that the Minister of Health, Silvia Masebo solicited for a bribe and a luxury motor vehicle from him.

In a letter dated May 15, 2022 he wrote-“We write to you to place on record that we have been approached by representatives of the Minister of Health to arrange facilitation fees and a vehicle for her. We are, for obvious reasons very uncomfortable with this and wish to ask you to place this on record in Zambia”.

Mcebisi further revealed that he hosted Masebo with her partner in South Africa while she was pursuing the same corrupt goal.

He proceeded to report the matter to President Hichilema and the Anti-Corruption Commission(ACC).
But President Hichilema chose to do nothing about these serious allegations.

● Despite serious allegations and evidence that Government was buying medicines from Egypt from an agency, and the $70million procurement contract failed to meet minimum standards as provided by the Public Procurement Act of 2020,and the medicines were not tested and approved by the the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA), President Hichilema ignored the reports and once again sided with Masebo’s lies that this was an alleged government-to-government arrangement.

● As Masebo’s incompetence and failures are exposed, Hichilema has instead chosen to remove and replaced the Permanent Secretaries. He has removed Dr. George Magwende and Prof Lackson Kasonka. The crisis at the Ministry has not ended because President Hichilema chooses to provide pain killers to dowse the pain of a tooth ache when it requires a tooth extraction.

● On Friday 5th January, 2023, Masebo advised Lusaka residents to go to villages as they were safer there from the Cholera outbreak.

Sadly this statement has been supported and expanded by President Hichilema!

CONCLUSION

Clearly, Masebo is Hichilema’s archilles heel, a fatal weakness, that has formed as part of his quick downfall.

I know they will beat me in there, Simon Mwewa Lane cries to prison authorities

I know they will beat me in there, Mwewa cries to prison authorities

ZAMBIA Police officers have narrated to Kalemba what a hard time they had in admitting jailed “national teacher of English” Simon Mwewa to prison after his conviction on Tuesday.

The boisterous Facebook livestreamer known for his impeccable English accent, street broadcasts, social commentary and his insistence for folks to say it right, when they speak the King’s language was sentenced to six months imprisonment after he was convicted of maliciously deflating tyres of a minibus he thought was improperly parked near his business premises, Simoson Building, last June.

When all formalities where done and it was time for police to hand Mwewa over to prison authorities to book him in, he suggested that he should be taken to Lusaka Central Correctional facility popularly known as Chimbokaila instead of Kamwala Remand Prison.

The 53-year old business man told the officers that he feared that delinquent inmates at Kamwala remand prison would beat him blue black.

But despite officers spending more than an hour in trying to make Mwewa understated he could not be kept at Chimbokaila because his sentence was too short, he still insisted on being there because he feared he would be beaten.

The officers explained to Mwewa that he could not be accommodated at Lusaka Central Correctional facility because the bed space there was reserved for remandees facing capital offences before Court and inmates serving longer terms than his.

But explained as they might, Mwewa still insisted that he wanted to be booked in at Chimbokaila.

Seeing that their explanations were falling on deaf ears, the officers handed Mwewa over to prison authorities who according to sources took him to Mwembeshi Prison.

As of yesterday efforts were being made to have Mwewa released from prison by his sympathisers who engaged a lawyer to apply for bail pending appeal against his conviction and sentencing.

The lawyer could however not manage to file necessary documentation in request for bail as the judgement has not been made available.

ABOUT REACTIONARY LEADERSHIP: A CASE OF THE UPND GOVERNMENT- Sean Tembo

0

ABOUT REACTIONARY LEADERSHIP: A CASE OF THE UPND GOVERNMENT

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Different scholars define a leader in varying ways, but the definition that l prefer is that; “a leader is someone with a vision and a path to realizing that vision.” In other words, the most important attribute of a leader is that they must be able to think forward. To plan for the future. To anticipate what is likely to happen based on existing conditions and put a plan of action in place to mitigate possible future adverse events. But the question is; do we really have leaders in our Government?

2. The current cholera epidemic has been long in the making. By now, we all know the causes and drivers of cholera; heaps of uncollected garbage in the city and in the neighborhoods, shallow wells used for drinking water in the neighborhoods, poor sanitation exhibited by poor disposal of faecal matter etcetera. And yet, despite the causes and drivers of cholera being well known and documented, they have been staring in the face of Government for several years without any kind of action on the part of Government.

3. The central business district (CBD) in Lusaka has always been characterized by heaps of uncollected garbage spanning from Lumumba Road, Freedom Way, Chachacha road and even in the once classy Cairo Road. What only differs is the size of these heaps of uncollected garbage, as they are biggest in Lumumba Road and become slightly small as you approach Freedom Way and are smallest in Cairo Road. But the heaps of uncollected garbage are there all year round. This scenario of uncollected garbage is replicated in all neighborhoods across Lusaka, and l believe even in other cities and towns across the nation. I often wonder why we are such a dirty nation? Why it is so difficult for the Ministry of Local Government to put in place a comprehensive system for garbage collection and disposal across the nation?

4. Secondly, the issue of lack of clean drinking water is something that has bedeviled the Zambian people in most urban and peri-urban areas of Lusaka. This problem has been exacerbated by the mushrooming of unplanned residential areas across the entire nation. In selected places, non-governmental organizations such as World Vision have moved in to drill boreholes and erect tanks to supply clean drinking water to particular neighborhoods. When l look at the cost of such interventions, l am often left to wonder why Government through the Ministry of Local Government has failed to drill boreholes and erect tanks across all the neighborhoods that do not have water reticulation systems? A single borehole can service hundreds of households and prevent them from using shallow wells as a source of drinking water. But why is Government adamant to intervene and help these vulnerable populations?

5. Then there is the issue of poor disposal of faecal matter. You will be shocked to learn that the entire Lusaka CBD only has one public toilet which is located at Town Center near the Police Post. If you pass by there around lunchtime, you will find queues and queues of people waiting to use the toilet. It is no wonder that yesterday, a certain white man who is thought to be a tourist, ended up defecating at the entrance of the Main Post Office in Cairo Road, much to the amusement of many onlookers!!! No one can blame this man really. He had no option. And l am told that while he was doing it, he kept explaining to onlookers that he had searched for a public toilet but he could not find any. Already, this embarrassing story is trending in most international news outlets including Reuters. What an embarrament to the nation!!

6. My estimate is that at any given time there are at least half a million people in Lusaka CBD. Now, can you imagine 500,000 people using a single toilet? For a long time now, the traders along Lumumba Road and Freedom Way have been improvising by urinating and defecating in plastic bags and then throwing the feacal matter into the drainage. Government cannot tell me that they are not aware of this practice, and yet no effort has been made to construct adequate public ablution facilities across Lusaka CBD. I remember those days when l used to frequent the CBD, whenever my stomach gets warm and l need to use a toilet for a number two, l would look for the nearest hotel. They have the cleanest toilets and the Receptionist will never ask you where you’re going. When you are done and on your way out, you can even have the audacity to tell them to spray air freshener frequently in their bathrooms!!

7. And then there is the issue of cholera vaccines. We are told that Government has ordered a million doses which should arrive in the country in the next few weeks. Apparently we are supposed to clap for Government for this development? But the question is where was Government all this time, given the fact that this Cholera epidemic was first reported in October, 2023. That is more than three months ago. Why wasn’t Government proactive and ensure that they do mass vaccinations for all at-risk populations, especially in areas where people draw drinking water from shallow wells? What took them so long? Why is our Government sleeping on the job?

8. Indeed, it is beyond debate that the 300 or so lives that have so far been lost from the cholera epidemic did not have to be lost, had our Government not slept on the job. The current cholera crisis is one of self-creation by Government for reasons best known to themselves. But why would Government deliberately create a cholera crisis, some people might ask? Well, there are several possible reasons, but one of the most likely is a financial motive. A health crisis such as cholera often comes with it an overwhelming response from the business community who make both financial and material donations. This money is not subject to the internal controls and accountability systems that other public funds are subjected to, which makes it very easy for Government officials to pocket these donations. Therefore, having a public health crisis such as the ongoing cholera epidemic, is a very lucrative venture for unscrupulous Government officials. It is a time to mint cash. And the more bodies that pile up, the more cash that rolls in from donors. Therefore, even next year, don’t expect garbage to be collected. Don’t expect boreholes to be drilled in neighborhoods that use shallow wells. Don’t expect public toilets to be constructed. As for tourists coming to Zambia, well my advice is that they better ensure they carry some toilet paper in their backpacks so that even if they do it at the Main Post Office, they can at least wipe themselves!!!

Court orders DNA test in Lusambo/Mercy case

0

By GRACE CHAILE
THE Lusaka High Court has ordered for a DNA test to be conducted on Mercy Cowham’s four children to ascertain if former Lusaka Province minister ,Bowman Lusambo is their father as she claimed.

This is a matter in which Lusambo in 2021 sued Ms Cowham in the Lusaka High Court seeking damages for libel, an apology and an order for a DNA test to be conducted on her children to ascertain their paternity. Daily Nation Zambia

Mr Lusambo applied to the Court for an order to conduct a paternity test on the four children alleged to have been fathered by him saying he never engaged in any sexual activity with their mother, Ms Cowham.
Mr Lusambo contended that the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test was the only way to prove the truth. Daily Nation Zambia

The four children were born between 2015 and 2021.

“That I have never been engaged in any form of sexual activity with the defendant, whatsoever. That I believe that a DNA test will be the only sure way to determine the paternity of the defendant’s four children,” he said. Daily Nation Zambia

Mr Lusambo said that Ms Cowham would not be prejudiced in away if the court issued an order but it will be done in the interest of justice.

Ms Cowham agreed to the request of a DNA test and stated that there was no malice in her stating that the former PF Kabushi Member of Parliament was the father of her children when in the past, he never disputed paternity of the children and even supported them.
Daily Nation Zambia

She stated that the video in which she made the said revelations was not meant to excite the public but the words were based on fair comment and the truth. .
The defendant added that the duo were in an on and off sexual relationship which ended this year.

A retrospective look on 2023

0

Laura Miti writes….

A retrospective look on 2023 concludes the following:

Economy

The 2023 economic situation had, for me, two rather divergent assessments:

  1. Tough, Depressing
There is no arguing with the fact that 2023 hit Zambian pockets viciously. The inescapable indicator of that being the high price of mealie meal. The Kwacha galloped south and, with it, prices of food and other essentials. In simple terms, the ordinary citizen was hungrier than they had been in previous years. Compounding the fact of the economic difficulties were, to use an incongruity, the gleeful lamentations of opposition parties about how tough things were. Their song, on repeat about, how the current government was failing. If you did not know that you were hungry, and your bills were becoming more difficult to pay, there was Emmanuel Mwamba and Fred M’membe to happily tell you. So, yes, 2023 was economically rough.
  2. Navigating Stormy Waters
There was an inverse view to the depressing economy set out above. My view, that I have shared often, and which nothing has yet convinced me to change, is that, all things considered, if 2023 had visited us with the country under any of the politicians we now have as alternatives to the presidency, things would have been much worse. Simply, it is remarkable that, given the mountain of debilitating debt in our path, the country remains some kind of going concern.

I am almost certain, and would be glad to be convincingly divested of that view, that any other government would have told us that social benefits like free education, meal allowances for students or social cash transfer were impossible, given the economic straits. We can add to that employment of teachers, nurses and others. That, in the current environment, these social safety nets, that reduced what citizens had to pay from their pockets, were in the budget and implemented, is remarkable.

Significant for me, about the economy, is that I have not heard one politician suggest how they would have navigated the stormy debt waters differently and better, were they in power. In simple terms, it is my view that 2023 was hard, but could have been more difficult with a less economically astute President and his financial team. This is especially true because what happens to our economy is, right now, not in our hands. It is in the hands of the people we owe astronomical amounts of money. And they are not our friends.

Politics

There is no other way of saying it- our political environment in the last year was horrible. It was both annoying and concerning. Just as I commend President Hichilema, for holding tight onto an economy wanting to gallop into the full red, I blame him for allowing our politics to degenerate back to mindless wallowing in the mud.
Exchange of insults, prevention of opposition parties from holding meetings, ruling party unconvincingly not being involved in PF internal madness, arrest of opposition leaders at the drop of a hat for illegally extended periods – what was all that??

My view is that the government, HH especially, felt the pressure of citizen unhappiness on the economy. Now, rather than speak honestly to the country about its inability to fulfil promises, naively, if sincerely, made in opposition, the powerholders inexplicably decided to undo the gains they had made, on quietening the political temperature. Take, for example, decisions like allowing Inspector General of Police, Musamba, to sound and act as unprofessionally as the worst IGs we have had. In this country, the political environment is largely determined by the conduct of the police. Well, in 2023, they were drunk.

Social

In 2023, we as a country continued to display the extent to which our education system is failing us. The frivolous issues that caught our attention, and the important ones we ignored, showed us to be a society with a very weak ability to think critically. To ask the simple question – does this make sense? Our ability to be totally consumed, for extended periods, by the absolute nonsense happening in so-called celebrity lives is award winning. I need not speak about our national ability to be conned by Papas.
Eh, head aches just thinking about who we socially can be.

There is an upside to us, though. It is that we remain a thoroughly humorous country. I cannot count the number of times I have found myself laughing hard at something hilarious, said about a serious matter. Our mungulu is 5-star, as is our easy nature. All said – Zambia is a beautiful country to live in, and that was not different in 2023.

Legal

The big win was the passing of the much-awaited Access to Information Law. A surprisingly good law, it turned out to be. One that we will need to test. We, however, still await constitutional amendment as well as that of the Public Order and Cyber Security Laws. These are a problem for our democracy. With the need for law reform, 2023 ended with a judiciary, few people trust, still needing fundamental change.

Other

As ever, there were intriguing sideshows to 2023.

There is the presidential marriage. I doubt we have had a presidential couple that does so much for this institution that is in so much trouble in Zambia. HH, and his Mutinta, come across as a genuinely loving and self-contained partnership. I mean, how many times, in this country, have we seen someone with the kind of money, and now power, that the chap in State House has, who does not play a string of away games. We can only hope that this period, in which this couple is in the limelight, will bring some minimum stability to marriages – kaili we like copying those in power. Why not copy some good? Also good to observe is that we do not have a rogue presidential child, hogging the media.

Next aside, is my good friend, Sunday Chanda. His ability to reimagine himself remains riveting. Hmm, if truth be told, this man should be feared. Kuli kuchinja kwa so?? What other versions of him exist??

Anyhow, what Sunday has managed with his constituency, by use of the CDF, is something to applaud. CDF can change communities, if those that manage it can simply understand what really matters to people, and deliver on it.

Then we had the Copper Queens! Just loved, loved, loved them – all round!

Here is to 2024! May it be kind!

The nonsense of Umodzi Kum’mawa

The nonsense of Umodzi Kum’mawa

By Ronald Ngulube

Regional or tribal politics by nature can be quite divisive if not handled carefully and if activities of the Umodzi Kum’mawa grouping are anything to go by, Zambians need to get concerned.

The grouping, which hails from the Eastern Province, identifies itself as “a group dedicated to promoting development within the province and speaking for the welfare of our people”.

But they have strangely written an “open letter” to President Hakainde Hichilema requesting him to consider “appointing more individuals from Eastern Province in your cabinet particularly in light of the current vacancy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as you reshuffle.”

The audacity (Ati tyala bati. Chiputa kuipa!)

The group believes that United Party for National Development (UPND) members “hailing from Eastern Province, as well as those sympathetic to the party within the province, should be given the opportunity to serve, provided they possess the necessary credentials just like other Zambians from UPND strongholds.”

Does this group need reminding that there are people from the Eastern Province in cabinet?

As if that is not enough, in their so-called request, signed by their interim spokesperson Chanoda Ngwira, the group has further suggested a list of names Mr Hichilema should consider appointing.

According to Umodzi Kum’mawa, characters like Professor Edgar Ngoma, who once made HIV positive people drink swimming pool cleaning chemicals as a cure, Ambassador George K Zulu, Noel Nkhoma, Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika and eight others deserve ministerial positions, including occupying the current vacancy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Based on this letter alone, one doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to decipher that this group and its members are filled with a contagious sense of self-importance and entitlement.

A number of these people – Angela Chifire, George Zulu and Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika as an example – have already served the country in different portfolios and are even too old to be canvassing for further appointments. Does it mean they will continue serving this country in perpetuity? And why only them?

So, if all ethnic groupings and provinces formed the so-called developmental regional bodies and presented similar lists to the President, who in the end will he appoint?

If the motivation of this grouping is really to develop the province as they want us to believe and not self-serving intent, a number of them are rich and have wider business networks. If the likes of Andrew Kamanga, Robinson Zulu, Noel Nkhoma and all Zambians of Asian origin hailing from the Eastern Province combined their business networks, how much would the region be worth?

Why can’t they use those networks to attract investment to the region? Why can’t they work with the local chamber of commerce to promote business and trade? Is development only brought about through political appointments? What, then, is the role of the already existing Members of Parliament and other public officers?

The President should be allowed to appoint people on merit and not based on regionalism otherwise that would be promoting nepotism and tribalism.

Instead of these selfish individuals rushing to lobby for appointments, they should spend such time mobilizing resources to help in the fight against cholera, typhoid, dysentery or the fall of army worms that are ravaging the country, Eastern Province included.

Since Umodzi Kum’mawa “aims to strategically advance development programs for the people of Eastern Province in the broader context for the modernization of Zambia by advocating for and defending their interests and rights in all sectors” as highlighted in their letter to the President, that can also be done without lobbying for political appointments.

Since the “coalition recognizes that the region has abundant natural resources and the local people must always be engaged and prioritized to discover and actualize their full developmental potential just like other Zambians elsewhere” the selfish leaders of this grouping must also use their business networks and resources to develop the province. Development does not only come through political connections or appointments.

Any Zambian genuinely interested in the development of this country must not look at it through the lenses of Kumodzi Kum’mawa, Cuundu Caitwa or Luapula United.

Such tribal and regional nonsense must come to an end forthwith!

Someone also needs to remind former diplomats like Ambassador Zulu and Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika that it’s undiplomatic and uncouth to engage a President through open, public letters no matter how well intentioned your actions may be.

MUSAMBA’S RECKLESS MOUTH NEEDS TAMING

0

MUSAMBA’S RECKLESS MOUTH NEEDS TAMING

If we were to grade all police chiefs that have presided over the affairs of the Zambia Police Service, Graphael Musamba would top the list as the worst ever! Whether his careless statements have been by design or not, only he knows best. From the time he took over from Lemmy Kajoba, Graphael has been on rampage threatening the opposition as if he heads the UPND secretariat. He has literally taken over UPND secretary general Batuke Imenda’s job. Just after being sworn in, his first statement criminally defamed Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe whom he accused of planning criminal activities. It was a political statement that sent citizens in awe. Citizens wondered whether that statement was written by State House aides or UPND secretariat officials. Thereafter, he issued a barrage of other highly political statements that have clearly defined Graphael as a political hired gun by President Hakainde Hichilema. Graphael is at it again. He has told the opposition to hold rallies indoors because, according to him, the situation in the country is volatile. We challenge Graphael to tell the nation which law he is using by saying this. We also challenge him to point at and explain the volatile situation he is talking about. We all know that the UPND has failed to run government methodically. They have failed to fulfill the many promises they gave to the Zambians.

Further they have willfully raised the cost of living due to incompetence. If this is the volatile situation Graphael is referring to, then he is extremely toxic and does not fit to be Inspector General of Police. This is an economic situation that should make opposition question those in authority all the time. Further, the Constitution of Zambia mandates opposition parties to mobilise all the time under police protection. And since we just have two years to the next general election, the opposition should intensify their mobilisation. Graphael should therefore not put himself in the forefront protecting UPND’s bad governance by forbidding public gatherings in form of political rallies. We are all aware that Graphael was exhumed from the police museum by Hakainde, but this should not turn him into a lawless police officer in his quest to please the appointing authority.

What Graphael said is illegal and utter nonsense, and the opposition should dismiss it with the contempt it deserves. Zambia is a democratic state with full rights and freedoms of the people guaranteed. One of them is freedom of assembly which Graphael is trying to take away from Zambians who should enjoy it. If this is what they have planned with Hakainde so that when people get agitated he invokes the Constitution it will not work. Certainly not in Zambia!

In fact, this habit of exhuming service men and women should stop. It takes away progressive ideas from young officers with fresh minds. You cannot pick up an ancient piece from the museum and expect it to live up to modern democratic trends. Modern policing requires civility and upholding the rule of law. It does not require threats through the gun. It requires intelligence and respect for the rule of law.

We therefore agree with Lusaka lawyer Celestin Mukandila who has described Graphael’s statement as unconstitutional, and has urged the Law Association of Zambia to challenge this illegal decree.

In his letter to Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) president Lungisani Zulu, Mukandila said the statement must be challenged immediately, warning that failure to do so will erode fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

“Mr president you will note that in line with the objects for which the Association is established as provided for in section 4 (l) of the law association of Zambia Act Chapter 31 of the laws of Zambia, the association is mandated to seek the advancement of the rule of law and the rights and liberties of the individual. Further, Article 20(1) as read together with Article 21(1) of the Constitution of Zambia chapter 1 of the laws of Zambia guarantees the protection of the freedom of expression and the protection of freedom of assembly and association,” said Mukandila.

“Your excellency, from the aforementioned provisions of the law and the decided Supreme Court decisions, the Law Association of Zambia must immediately challenge the constitutionality of the statement that the Inspector General of Police made as the said statement abrogates the guaranteed constitutional rights of the opposition political persons and proposes to threaten criminal prosecution of gatherings that may occur. Your excellency, I opine that the statement that was made goes against the tenets of constitutionalism, the rule of law as well as the principles of a good democracy such as ours and promotes the advancements of a one-party state tendency which must be checked to protect our democracy and multipartism we have achieved thus far. Your excellency, the country is earmarked for general elections in the next two (2) years and such statements only prove a shrinking democratic space which curtails opposition political players from participating in a leveled playing field of this democratic process in offering alternative solutions to our country. Your excellency, your intervention in defense of our democracy, rights, and individual liberties is in line with the mandate as the Law Association of Zambia is a necessity at present.”

In fact, all stakeholders should rise up and challenge these dictatorial tendencies Hakainde is breeding using state institutions. It should not just take LAZ. The church, civil society, individual activists and all stakeholders should stand up to defend their rights and freedoms. This year should not be like last year where Hakainde stopped the opposition from holding rallies. No sane Zambian should tolerate this archaic way of governance. UPND has destroyed the Judiciary, the Legislature and every other institution of government. For example, the Anti-Corruption Commission is just a shell of itself. This is probably the worst it has ever been in its history. The Drug Enforcement Commission is equally just on paper. All these institutions are now just fighting political battles for the UPND. They are just finishing taxpayer’s money through incompetence.

So Graphael should know that Zambians will not allow him to handover the Zambia Police Service to the UPND secretariat on a silver platter. It is a people’s institution which should serve everyone including those in opposition. Just as we have said before, if Graphael wants to please Hakainde so much, let him go and work at the UPND secretariat. Graphael’s careless, illegal and inflammatory statements are a recipe for chaos in the country, which has remained as a beacon of peace in Africa. They are highly divisive. He is pushing citizens against the wall so that when they react he can justify use of extreme measures. He needs to be tamed and urgently so. Graphael is certainly not a good top cop. But what Graphael should not forget is that when reckoning time comes he will remain alone and there will be no one to defend him, not even Hakainde. It is said that “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Remember that and act accordingly!

Zambia does not start and end with Graphael or Hakainde. It is a collective, perpetual society.

Hichilema conducted daily updates of the state of his cattle while Zambians died of cholera!-Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA’S DISASTROUS RESPONSE TO CHOLERA

Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s sluggish and disastrous response to the cholera outbreak in the country, especially in Lusaka is unacceptable and a major embarrassment to his government.

By not returning to Lusaka in time while the pandemic ravaged the capital city, with the number of deaths on the rise each day, Mr Hichilema showed serious lack of empathy for the people and a rare leadership insensitivity that this country has never seen in political leadership before.

It is common knowledge that the prevailing cholera outbreak has overwhelmed our health system. The health staff is overstretched, the infrastructure is inadequate, and medical supplies are not enough yet the President chose to be on vacation for such a lengthy period. He chose to conduct a spot-check of his cattle farms and provided daily public updates on the state of his animals, whilst the unforgiving cholera epidemic was mercilessly claiming lives, with clinics and hospital floors littered with dying patients, and hopeless and desperate relatives trying to assist the medical staff.

Abantu balefwa ena alependa ing’ombe! What type of a person is Mr Hichilema? What kind of insensitive behavior is this? When people are dying helplessly due to excessive congestion in health care facilities coupled with other logistical and administrative challenges, the President is not bothered or moved to immediately return and provide the much needed frontline support and assistance to the health system, which is on the verge of collapsing.

Clearly, animals on his cattle farms became a priority over dying citizens.

But we are not surprised at all because this is how cumulative mindsets operate. For them, every activity is more about personal gain rather than human beings. These are people who are preoccupied with the usage of power, influence and resources to advance personal interests and profits, and not to help the vulnerable people.

No wonder counting and vaccinating his animals came first at the expense of human life. He found it extremely urgent and necessary to stay away and provide vaccines for his animals and not the dying masses in Kanyama, Mandevu, Matero and other compounds in the city that have been hit by cholera. This is a failed leadership on all fronts and this President is a disaster!

And let him not posture that he cut his holiday to comeback and attend to the cholera situation because the truth is, he finished his all business at his cattle farms.

We refuse to look at the recent happenings in the handling of the cholera outbreak as above politics and place the blame on Mr Hichilema.

All this sluggish and disastrous response to the pandemic is a result of systematic profiteering politics that have become a norm under this corrupt puppet tribal regime.

If there is a person responsible for the worsening cholera situation, it is Mr Hichilema and his regime who failed to prepare for this problem, which occurs literally every year especially in Lusaka. This is not a one off situation but rather an annual occurrence where with proper planning and resource mobilization, they should have prepared for it way ahead of time, like previous governments used to do.

We urge Mr Hichilema stop posing and start working. Several lives of people are being destroyed by this disease daily. And we cannot afford to have a relaxed and pretentious response from him and his government.

This regime must realize that what we are faced with today, is a very serious and desperate situation that requires achievable immediate and longterm interventions.

We need a sensitive and swift leadership in order to protect lives.

LAURA MITI IS CALIBRE DESERVING APPOINTMENT AT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION- Peter Sinkamba

By Peter Sinkamba

LAURA MITI IS CALIBRE DESERVING APPOINTMENT AT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

I have had interactions with commissioners at Human Rights Commission since its establishment in May 1993, when late President Fredrick Chiluba appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate human rights violations by past governments. Initially called the Munyama Commission, headed by prominent lawyer Bruce Munyama, the commission held public hearings throughout the country to gather evidence of human rights violations.

Not all commissioners were brave in the Munyama Commission. Outstanding with bravery were late John Chipawa Sakulanda and Laura Harrison. Among other things, the duo exposed the use of torture in secret detention centers throughout the country. The duo took to task police and prison officers who were into the habit of torture and abuse of human rights.

Following on the Munyama Commission’s suggestion, in1996 the government made amendments to the constitution to provide for the establishment of a permanent human rights commission under Article 25. The Human Rights Commission Act of 1997 was passed by the Zambian parliament on March 13, 1997 and signed into law by President Chiluba.

The Human Rights Commission Act was billed as a central pillar of the MMD’s efforts of legal reform to bring about a culture of respect of human rights by all in the country. President Chiluba appointed then High Court Judge Lombe Chibesakunda to chair the Permanent Human Rights Commission (PHRC), along with five other commissioners. Of the five, only Sakulanda crossed over from the Munyama Commission.

Sakulanda continued serving the PHRC with unmatched bravery to protect and uphold human rights in Zambia till his untimely death in 2006.

Thereafter, the commission became a shadow of itself, full of pretenders for human rights commissioners.

I have keenly followed Laura Miti commentaries since her appointment as a Commissioner at PHRC. To me, the commentaries she makes in her personal capacity on social media, and elsewhere, reveal a frustrated courageous soul working with pretenders.

I think she could have made impactful contributions to human rights accountability by all if only she had served during the reign of Laura Harrison and late John Sakulanda at PHRC. Instead of making running lamentations, Sakulanda and the two Lauras would have by now moved PHRC to pack IG Musamba were he surely belongs.

MISA ZAMBIA APPLAUDS GOVT’S INITIATIVE OF 3-YEAR TAX HOLIDAY ON BROADCASTING EQUIPMENT

….the 3-year suspension of Customs and Excise duty is a significant step towards promoting technological advancement and innovation within the broadcasting sector

Lusaka…. Wednesday January 10, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has commended the government for its forward-thinking approach in fostering the growth and development of the media industry through the recent announcement of a 3-year tax holiday on broadcasting equipment.

MISA Zambia Chairperson Lorraine Mwanza – Chisanga says this landmark initiative, as outlined in Statutory Instrument No. 67 of 2023, presents an invaluable opportunity for both newly licensed and existing broadcasting stations to enhance their capabilities and contribute to the enrichment of the media landscape.

Mrs Chisanga says the 3-year suspension of Customs and Excise duty, extending until December 31, 2026, is a significant step towards promoting technological advancement and innovation within the broadcasting sector.

She says MISA Zambia recognizes the government’s commitment to creating an environment that supports media organizations in their pursuit of excellence.

“In light of this, MISA Zambia urges all newly licensed stations and existing broadcasting
entities to seize this opportunity to import new broadcasting equipment or upgrade their existing infrastructure. This tax holiday is a strategic move that not only encourages technological investments but also ensures that media houses stay at the forefront of delivering high-quality content to the public. The media plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, disseminating information, and fostering societal development. By taking advantage of the 3-year tax holiday, media houses can enhance their operational capacities, improve content quality, and contribute to the overall growth of the media industry,” she submitted.

“MISA Zambia encourages media houses to review the Statutory Instrument No. 67 of 2023 for detailed information and guidelines regarding the tax holiday. This comprehensive document provides the necessary insights for broadcasters to navigate the benefits of the
initiative seamlessly. We believe that this tax holiday will empower media organizations to make substantial contributions to the socio-economic development of Zambia.”

The MISA Zambia Chapter Chairperson further said as the media landscape evolves, embracing modern broadcasting equipment is vital for staying competitive and meeting the ever-changing demands of audiences.

“MISA Zambia calls upon all stakeholders, including government agencies, industry players, and the public, to support and promote the effective utilization of this tax holiday for the betterment of the media sector and, by extension, the nation,” she concluded.

US court hears historic case involving Trump immunity

0

A very important court case to decide if Donald Trump can be charged with a crime will be held in Washington on Tuesday.

The lawyers for the ex-president, who is a Republican, will say that being president protects him from being accused of election fraud in 2020.

Mr Trump, who said he will go, is accused by a special lawyer of trying to change Joe Biden’s win.

The result of this hearing could greatly affect what happens to Mr. Trump in the future.

His lawyers are using the same argument to defend him in another group of election charges he has in Georgia.

It is likely that this problem will go to the US Supreme Court during the 2024 election, where Mr. Trump is expected to win the Republican nomination.

Long legal arguments about whether he has immunity could make his criminal trials take longer than expected, possibly even after the November election when he will likely be up against Democratic President Joe Biden.

For many years, the ex-president has used presidential immunity to avoid facing civil and criminal cases against him.

The US Constitution does not say that the president is immune from lawsuits, but courts have usually agreed that government officials should be protected from being sued.

There is no past law that says what should happen if a president is charged with a crime.

In legal papers before this court date, the special lawyer prosecuting him, Jack Smith, told the court that if Mr Trump is not allowed to be charged, it could mean that presidents can break the law to stay in office.

The judge said being president doesn’t mean you can never go to jail.

On Monday, in a post on social media, Mr. Trump said that he was not trying to get elected when he questioned the results of the election against Mr. He said he was just doing his job as the president by pointing out voter fraud.

Three judges in Washington DC will talk and listen to arguments at the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, and then make a decision later on.

The courtroom is a few blocks from the US Capitol. His fans stormed the Capitol to prevent Joe Biden from being confirmed as president in January 2021.

Mr Trump’s lawyers will use his Senate acquittal for his actions before the violence to support their case.

“His appeal document says the president can’t be charged for a crime if the US Senate already said he didn’t do it. ” The accusation against President Trump is not legal or allowed by the constitution. It needs to be rejected.

A survey by CBS News shows that most Americans think that Mr. Trump should not be shielded from being prosecuted for things he did while he was president.

The trial for the election fraud case is supposed to happen on 4 March, but it is paused because the appeals court, which has two judges picked by Democratic presidents and one by a Republican, hasn’t made a decision yet.

No matter what the judges decide, most people think the case will go to the US Supreme Court. Conservatives have more judges there, with 6 out of 9.

Last month, the highest court said no to Mr. Smith’s request to speed up a decision on Mr. Trump’s immunity claim.

Last month, the Supreme Court said it will hear Mr. Trump’s appeal against Colorado for not allowing him to be on the ballot because of a rarely used part of the US constitution.

Saudi Arabia hopes to work with Israel after war

0

The Saudi Arabian ambassador to the UK wants to make friends with Israel after the war in Gaza, but only if it helps create a country for the Palestinians.

Prince Khalid bin Bandar told the media that a deal was almost finished. The talks between the US and Saudi Arabia were stopped after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October.

Saudi Arabia still wants to be friends with Israel even though many people were hurt in Gaza. But they won’t do it if it means hurting the Palestinian people.

The ambassador said that the international community is not doing enough to stop the fighting in Gaza and that this is a failure of humanity.

He also said he wants the UK to be fair to Israel and treat it like it treats other countries. “The lack of attention towards Israel is a problem because it hinders peace,” he said.

Saudi Arabia is a leading country in the Arab and Islamic world. Since 1948, it has not officially accepted Israel, and if a deal to make things normal between the two countries happens, it would be a very big moment for Israel.

In late September, the leader of Saudi Arabia said in a TV interview in the US that we are getting closer to an agreement every day.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman thinks the Palestinian issue is very important. He said any agreement should make life easier for the Palestinians. But he didn’t say it had to lead to a new Palestinian state.

Palestinian leaders have said they will reject any deal that doesn’t give them a state. But earlier, they were asking for more money and control of land in the West Bank in exchange for working with the US-backed Saudi-Israel process.

Saudi officials wanted the US to stop talking about the attack a few days after it happened. About 1,300 people were killed and 240 others were taken hostage by hundreds of Hamas gunmen from Gaza. They had gone into southern Israeli communities.

The health ministry in Gaza, which is under the control of Hamas, says that over 23,200 people have died during the fighting between Israel and Hamas. Israel started the military campaign to try and get rid of Hamas.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to reporters after meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed on Monday. He mentioned that the topic of normalizing relations was discussed during their meeting.

“He wants to keep working on that,” he said. “But first the fighting in Gaza must stop, and there must be a clear way for the Palestinians to have their own state. “

During an interview with the BBC’s Today show, the Saudi ambassador in London said that his country’s leaders are definitely interested in making an agreement.

[A deal] was almost done, that’s for sure. We really wanted Palestine to become an independent state in the end. Prince Khalid said that we still believe in normalizing the situation, but not if it hurts the Palestinian people.

He said, “We were almost back to normal,so we were close to having a Palestinian state. “You can’t have one without the other. They were talking about how things are put in order and managed.

When asked if Saudi Arabia thinks Hamas should be part of the future Palestinian state, Prince Khalid said they need to think about it a lot. Hamas is considered a terrorist group by Israel, the US, UK, and other Western countries.

“If you believe things can get better, then change is possible. ” But when there is a fight, you have to understand that both sides have lost, he said.

“Israel’s current government has a very strong and uncompromising view, which makes it hard to find a solution to the conflict. “

He didn’t say much, but the US criticized two extreme Israeli politicians for suggesting that Palestinians should be moved out of Gaza.

Prince Khalid said that the war in Gaza has caused a lot of people to die and has also led to a big crisis. He also warned that there is a risk that some people may become radical because of the war.

“The high level of violence from both sides, especially from Israel, in the past three months is something I have never seen before,” he said. “The numbers are very bad, really bad. “

“This will make Palestinian people and others around the world feel even more hopeless. “Every one sees human failure in what is happening, because no one has taken action to stop it. Efforts are being made, but they are not sufficient.

Kim Jong Un allegedly turns forty

0

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might be turning 40, but some people are not sure.

The leader of North Korea has never told anyone his birthday, so no one knows when it is.

If what people are saying is true, he turned the milestone age on Monday. On that day, official pictures of him and his daughter visiting a chicken farm were also released.

The quiet day is very different from the days of the people who came before him.

Actually, the birthdays of his father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung – big, national celebrations when they were in charge – are still celebrated as holidays today.

It is not known why the suggested date of 8 January is a secret. Before, North Korean officials said thank you to Donald Trump for his birthday wishes in January 2020, but they didn’t say which day.

More proof of the date came out six years ago. Dennis Rodman, a US basketball player, sang happy birthday to Kim Jong Un in front of a big crowd.

Gilsup Kwak, the leader of One Korea Center, a website that focuses on North Korea, thinks there are several reasons why there is no information about his mother Ko Yong Hui. One reason is that she was supposedly born in Japan.

Many people in North Korea still don’t trust Japan, which ruled the region from 1910 to 1945. This could hurt Kim Jong Un‘s claims about his family. So, people haven’t talked about it much. Making a big deal about his birthday might lead to getting attention he doesn’t want.

“Mr Kwak said that the truth about Kim Jong Un’s birth is something that could make him vulnerable. ”

But there are many other reasons, he says, such as thinking that honoring his ancestors and family is sufficient, and wanting to show himself as a down-to-earth leader.

Some people think that his age is the issue. Experts say that older leaders in North Korea think that their ruler is still too young, even though they made his father’s birthday an official holiday when he turned 40.

MPs detained in presidential residence by Polish police

0

The Polish police arrested the former interior minister and deputy interior minister inside the presidential palace in Warsaw. It was a day of unusual political drama.

Mariusz Kaminski and Maciej Wasik were sent to prison for two years last month because they used their power in the wrong way when they were in charge of an anti-corruption office in 2007.

After the arrests, the new interior minister Marcin Kierwinski wrote on X: “Everyone is treated the same by the law. ”

The arrests show the problems between the Law and Justice party and the new pro-EU coalition.

The men who were chosen as PiS MPs in October did not accept the court’s decision last month because President Andrzej Duda, who is a PiS supporter, forgave them for the crime in 2015. Mr Duda said he doesn’t agree with the court’s decision because he still believes his pardon is valid.

The pair lost their positions in Parliament, but they and President Duda say they are still legally elected MPs because of the pardon.

On Monday evening, the court told the police to arrest the men. However, Duda invited both of them to the Presidential Palace in Warsaw on Tuesday morning for a ceremony to swear in two of their former colleagues as presidential advisers.

They came out of the palace a few hours later to talk to reporters for a short time, but they stayed inside the palace grounds the whole time. Mr Kaminski said that if they are arrested, they will be called “political prisoners” and he thanked Mr Duda for his help.

“We have a big problem that needs to be taken care of right away. ” Kaminski said a very strict and oppressive government is being formed. Then they went back into the palace as the political events continued.

A little while later, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference that the situation was “unbelievable”. He said we should listen to the court’s decision and suggested that President Duda is helping the men avoid punishment.

The prime minister and interior minister don’t have a set of rules to follow when there are prisoners in the Presidential Palace. This is clearly using a situation to benefit from the fact that no one will fight back against such an important person like the president,” he added.

After the police arrested some people, many PiS supporters protested outside the palace to show their support for the arrested men.

Last year, the highest court in Poland decided that Mr. Duda’s pardon in 2015 was not allowed because it was given while the men were still trying to prove they were innocent, before their conviction was officially final. Mr Duda disagrees and says the pardon still counts.

To make things more difficult, judges chosen by the PiS party have ruled in favor of Mr. Duda in the Constitutional Tribunal and a new Supreme Court chamber.

Mr Tusk said that Mr. Duda could end the disagreement by forgiving the men again, now that the decision is final. But that would make people doubt if the first pardon was legal or not.

Mr Tusk’s group started working as the government last month. They promised to reverse the changes made by PiS to the courts, news organizations, and government workers. Many international groups say these changes have hurt the legal system in Poland.

One of the first things it did was to change the state TV, radio, and news agency that PiS had turned into a propaganda tool for its government.

However, their ways were like PiS’s, they started by having a government minister remove media boards and put new people before making new laws.

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights said it was hard to change the public media because of new laws by PiS. They said the media had become like a tool for spreading one-sided information. They also said they were not sure about the changes made by the new government.

Former PiS prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the BBC that Mr. Tusk’s government talked a lot about democratic standards, but didn’t really follow through with them.

“We are seeing an unusual attack on the way laws are enforced. ” Tusk’s government wanted to control public television and media using force. This does not meet democratic standards. We haven’t seen a government being so harsh since communism. Morawiecki said it is very wrong for people who talk about democracy to do this.

Many people who support Tusk think it’s hypocritical for PiS to make these accusations, because PiS has a history of controlling government institutions when they’re in power.

Prisoners in Ecuador kidnap guards after escape of drug lord Fito

0

Security forces in Ecuador are working to bring order back to six prisons where there were riots on Monday.

Prisoners have taken some guards captive and said they will hurt them if soldiers try to take back control of the prisons.

Four police officers were also taken away after President Daniel Noboa said that there was a serious situation.

The trouble started when the famous gang leader Fito escaped from jail.

Authorities stated that Fito, also known as Adolfo Macías Villamar, was not in his cell when the police came to take him to another jail in the same area on Sunday morning.

They looked in the high-security area where he was kept but did not find him yet.

Government spokesperson Roberto Izurieta said that Fito, the leader of the Los Choneros gang, was warned that he was going to be transferred from La Regional jail. He lived in a big cell with bright colored paint and murals.

It’s believed that he ran away just before he was supposed to be moved. Two prison guards are being held because they might have helped Fito escape.

The 44-year-old is the leader of a strong prison gang called Los Choneros. It is believed that this gang is responsible for a lot of the violent fights and riots in Ecuador’s prisons in the last few years.

Despite their leader being in prison, the Los Choneros gang still has a lot of influence outside of Ecuadorean prisons. Gang members also do illegal things like killing people for money, making people pay them for protection, and selling drugs in different parts of the country.

The group has teamed up with a strong drug gang in Mexico called Sinaloa. They work together to bring cocaine from Colombia through Ecuador’s port cities to the US and Europe.

Fito became the new leader of the gang when the old boss, Jorge Luis Zambrano, was killed in 2020.

He used to stay hidden, but then he sang a song that bragged about his crimes, and it seemed like he was trying to challenge the authorities. The song was released in September.

In the video, two singers and Fito’s daughter sing about the boss’s love for his family and his loyalty to those who support him. They say that he is unfairly criticized.

The secret video, made in spite of a rule against using electronic devices in jail, also shows Fito in the prison yard hanging out with other prisoners and petting a rooster.

His getaway is bad for President Noboa’s government. President Noboa had just taken office in November after winning an election that was marred by the killing of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Villavicencio said he got death threats from Fito, and then he got shot and killed after a campaign event in Quito.

Mr Noboa announced that there will be a state of emergency all over the country for two months. There will also be a curfew at night to try to stop the violence caused by Fito’s escape.

Three police officers are missing after they were taken by men in an unmarked car while working in Machala. Another policeman was taken away in the main city, Quito.

There have been explosions in the city of Cuenca and notes left behind asking for prison transfers to stop.

Ecuador declares war on gangs in wake of TV incident

0

Ecuador’s president wants to stop criminal gangs after a lot of violence and an attack on a TV studio.

Armed people wearing masks entered TC public TV channel’s live studio while it was on air, and made the staff lie down on the floor.

The police arrested 13 people after the attack and two workers got hurt.

At least 10 people died since a state of emergency started in Ecuador on Monday.

An emergency was announced because a dangerous criminal escaped from his prison cell. It’s not clear if the incident at the TV studio in Guayaquil is connected to the disappearance of Adolfo Macías Villamar, also known as Fito, the Choneros gang boss, from a prison in the same city.

On Tuesday, President Noboa said that there is a war happening inside the country. He is sending the military to stop crime and terrorism.

The government of Peru sent police to the border quickly to stop any trouble from coming into the country.

The US is against the bold attacks in Ecuador. They are working closely with President Daniel Noboa and his government and are ready to help.

Ecuador sends out lots of bananas to other countries. They also sell oil, coffee, cocoa, shrimps, and fish products to other places. An increase in fighting and violence in the Andean country, both in and outside of its prisons, is because of battles between drug gangs from different countries and local ones. They are fighting to control the routes for bringing cocaine to the US and Europe.

On Tuesday, during the attack at the TV station, a person with a shotgun pointed it at the head of one of the captives. The captive was also threatened with a revolver.

According to the AFP news agency, a woman was begging not to be shot, and someone else was heard screaming in pain.

A TC employee sent a message on WhatsApp saying that someone came in to hurt us. “Please, God, don’t let this happen. ” The criminals are on the run.

A cameraman got shot in the leg, and another one broke his arm in the attack, according to the deputy news director.

“Producers told us through our earpieces to be careful because someone was trying to enter, steal and mug us,” said Jorge Rendon to Reuters news agency.

“The doors in the studio are really thick, almost like they can stop bullets. They were trying to get in because they wanted to enter the studio and make us say whatever they wanted us to say,” he explained.

The police said that they arrested the suspects and posted a video of them and their weapons on social media. They also said that the suspects would be punished for their terrorist acts.

Emergency situation

President Noboa made a decision to declare a state of emergency in response to a series of riots and escapes from prisons, as well as other violent activities that were caused by criminal gangs.

He made a law that included the Choneros and 21 other gangs. The Choneros are named after the town of Chone in Manabi Province.

The order was made because of a state of emergency and it means there will be a curfew at night to stop the violence after Fito’s escape. The police are working to calm down the situation in six jails where there were fights on Monday.

On Tuesday, in Guayaquil, eight people were killed and three were hurt in attacks by criminal gangs. In the nearby town of Nobol, two police officers were also killed by armed criminals.

In Riobamba, a city in Ecuador, about 40 prisoners, including a drug lord, escaped from jail.

At least seven police officers were taken by force and there is a video going around on social media that shows three of the kidnapped officers sitting on the ground with a gun pointed at them. In the video, one of the officers is being made to read a statement directed to President Noboa, according to AFP.

The officer said, “If you start a war, you’ll have to deal with a war. ” You said there is an emergency. We say that police, civilians, and soldiers are the things that are taken as a result of war.

The police told everyone to leave the government building in Quito because they are worried about safety.

People in Quito told Reuters that the city was very chaotic after they heard about the attack at the TV station in Guayaquil.

Mario Urena said there are too many people feeling nervous in the city. “People are leaving work earlier. ” All the people are going away, there is a lot of traffic and alarms all around. There is a lot of confusion.

Some people in Cuenca were surprised when they saw the TV station taken over. They told AFP about their shock.

Francisco Rosas said that in Ecuador, they have never seen something like a channel being taken over and a show starting with shootings and kidnappings. “How safe are we right now. If a TV station can be robbed, then restaurants and shops are also at risk. ”

In the last few years, the prisons in the country have had a lot of fighting between gangs. This has led to many prisoners being killed in gang fights.

The Choneros are a tough gang in prison that is believed to be responsible for a lot of the violent fights and riots in Ecuador’s jails.

Fito is believed to have run away just hours before he was supposed to move. Two prison guards have been arrested for possibly helping him to get away.

His getting away also hurts the government of President Noboa. He became president in November after winning an election that was affected by the killing of presidential candidate and journalist Fernando Villavicencio.

Before he was killed while leaving a campaign event in Quito, Villavicencio had told people that he was getting death threats from Fito.

US Defence Secretary underwent surgery for prostate cancer

0

The White House said that President Joe Biden only found out on Tuesday that the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has cancer and is receiving treatment.

Mr Austin, who is 70 years old, went to the hospital on January 1st. After having surgery in December, he had some problems and had to go to the intensive care unit.

He got in trouble for not telling the higher-ups about it for a few days.

He said sorry for not making sure the public got the right information.

The delay in telling the White House about something important could be a problem for national security and causes questions about how open the Biden administration is being.

The defense secretary is an important person in the US military and works closely with the president.

The Pentagon said that Mr. Austin was still in the hospital on Tuesday. A person speaking for the hospital didn’t say when the patient would be able to leave.

“Secretary Austin is doing well and is in good spirits. He is in touch with his senior staff and has access to the necessary secure communication technology. He is also keeping an eye on day to day operations at the Department of Defense worldwide,” the spokesperson said.

The doctors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center found prostate cancer during Mr. Austin’s check-up in December 2023, and he needs treatment for it.

Mr Austin had a small surgery in the hospital on December 22nd to remove the cancer. He was put to sleep with medicine for this procedure.

He went back to Walter Reed on 1 January 2024 because he had some problems, and the doctors found out he had a urinary tract infection. The next day, he was moved to the intensive care unit for more treatment because he had abdominal fluid that was affecting his small intestines.

He never passed out or went under deep sleep for surgery. Mr Austin’s infection is gone and he is getting better. We expect him to fully recover, but it might take some time.

The doctors said that they found the cancer early and think he will get better.

On Tuesday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that President Biden was told that he has prostate cancer.

“He said no one at the White House knew Secretary Austin had prostate cancer until this morning. ”

He said the president was worried about the secretary’s health at first, but admitted that the way it was communicated wasn’t great.

“Mr Kirby said things are not going as planned. ”

Mr Biden and Sec Austin haven’t talked since the weekend, based on what Mr.

Kathleen Hicks, the person who helps Mr. Austin, didn’t know he was in the hospital even though she was supposed to do some of his work.

During a meeting on Tuesday, the Pentagon’s spokesperson, Air Force Maj Gen Pat Ryder, did not say why Mr. Austin didn’t talk about his condition earlier.

“I don’t have that exactly,” he said, but mentioned that being diagnosed with prostate cancer is very personal. The Pentagon said that a important person was sick with the flu which caused the failure.

Mr Ryder said they are looking at how they let people know about hospital stays to try to do a better job next time.

On Tuesday, the boss at the White House told the president’s helpers to let him know if they can’t do their jobs.

China promises the US it won’t “ever compromise” on Taiwan

0

China said it will not give in on the Taiwan issue during its first military talks with the US since 2021.

It asked the US to “stop giving weapons to Taiwan” and to listen to its worries.

This happens shortly before important elections in Taiwan. The elections could either bring Taiwan closer to or farther from Beijing.

China says that Taiwan belongs to them, but Taiwan thinks of itself as separate from China.

The Chinese defense ministry said that China wants to have a good and steady relationship with the US military, based on fairness and respect.

The message said that the US should pay attention to China’s worries. China will not change its stance on Taiwan and wants the US to follow the one-China principle, promises, and stop supporting Taiwan’s independence.

Taiwan is an important and tense issue between China and the US as they compete for power in Asia. In 2022, China said no to talking because they were mad that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022.

They started again earlier this week after China’s president Xi Jinping and US president Joe Biden made a deal in November. The meetings in Washington ended on Tuesday after two days of talking.

Taiwan said that it doesn’t see the Chinese satellite launch over the island as election interference.

A satellite was sent into space on Tuesday afternoon, which caused an alert for an air raid across the whole island. People on the island got a message on their phones telling them to be careful and stay safe.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said sorry for giving the wrong information about a missile in a message sent to people’s phones.

“Lin Yu-chan, a spokesman for Taiwan’s president, said that after the national security team looked at all the information and listened to other countries’ advice, they don’t think any political attempts will work. ”

The Chinese government’s news sources said that the Einstein Probe satellite is used to watch strange and short-lived events in space.

The KMT, the main opposition party on the island, criticized the use of a warning for the whole island as fear-mongering.
