Mauritania ex-president Aziz sentenced to 5 years for corruption

0

A court in Mauritania’s capital Nouakchott on Monday sentenced former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to five years in prison for having abused his position to amass an ill-gotten fortune.

Aziz, who ruled the pivotal country between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa between 2008 and 2019, fell into disgrace under successor and current President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, a former political ally.

The former president had been on trial since January alongside 10 other prominent figures — including two former prime ministers — for illicit enrichment, abuse of functions, influence-peddling and laundering.

He was convicted of illicit enrichment and laundering but cleared of the other charges.

The court also ordered the confiscation of Aziz’s illicitly acquired assets.

The 66-year-old former head of state did not react to the judgement.

Aziz has been in detention since January 24, having also spent several months in prison in 2021.

He received the longest sentence of all the defendants in the trial, with two former prime ministers and two former ministers cleared of the charges.

“The trial we attended was a political trial, and its verdict is also very political,” one of Aziz’s lawyers, Mohameden Ould Icheddou, said.

Another of his lawyers announced their intention to appeal against the verdict.

But a state lawyer, Brahim Ould Ebetti, told AFP that the verdict was “very lenient”.

Prosecutions of former heads of state are rare in the world, but especially so in Africa. Most former leaders brought to national or international courts are tried for blood crimes rather than corruption.

‘Victim of a plot’

A trader’s son who came to power in a bloodless coup, Aziz stepped down in 2019 after two terms in which he defused a jihadist insurgency that has swept across other countries in the Sahel.

He was succeeded by his former right-hand man, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, in the first peaceful transfer of power between elected leaders in the history of a country marked by coups and upheaval.

But relations soured within months of the handover as allegations emerged of financial misconduct.

The graft inquiry began shortly after he left office, starting with a parliamentary probe in August 2020.

The probe focused on Mauritania’s oil revenues during his presidency, the sale of state assets, the winding up of a public company in charge of food supplies and the activities of a Chinese fishing company.

Aziz, who was accused of piling up an estimated $72 million, said he was the victim of score-settling by rivals and persistently refused to speak to the examining magistrate.

He told a Nouakchott court in April that “these charges are baseless and you have no proof of any of this”.

“I am the victim of a plot by those I opposed,” Aziz said after the court read out the charges against him.

In the final moments of his trial, the former president implicated his successor by claiming that Ghazouani had given him two suitcases filled with several million euros (dollars) the day after his election in 2019.

Mauritania ranked 130th out of 180 in the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index by the organisation Transparency International.

Russian officials visit Niger to strengthen military ties

0

A Russian delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Defense arrived in Niamey to discuss with the military authorities, who came to power during a coup d’état at the end of July, the latter announced on Monday on national radio.

This is the first official visit by a member of the Russian government to this country since the July 26 coup which disrupted diplomatic relations between Niger and its international partners.

The delegation led by the Russian Deputy Minister of Defense, Colonel-General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, was received on Monday by the head of the Nigerien military regime, General Abdourahamane Tiani.

At the end of this meeting, the parties proceeded “to the signing of documents as part of the strengthening of military cooperation between the Republic of Niger and the Russian Federation”, indicated the Nigerien authorities.

Russian diplomacy finds itself in a favourable position in Niger while France, a privileged ally of the fallen regime, has become the target of the new authorities who have denounced military cooperation agreements and obtained the departure of its 1,500 soldiers deployed in this country in prey to jihadist violence.

This Russian delegation went on Sunday to Bamako in Mali, its main ally in the region, also governed by the military.

The discussions notably concerned “development projects for Mali, in terms of renewable energy and nuclear energy”, as well as “questions linked to the supply of Mali with fertilizer, wheat, and petroleum products”, indicated Alousséni Sanou, Minister of Economy and Finance of Mali, in a video published by the presidency.

He also mentioned the construction of a railway and a tram network, the creation of a regional airline, as well as research and mining projects.

The military regimes of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, the Sahelian countries most affected by jihadist violence and whose relations with France are execrable, have come together in recent weeks to form the Alliance of Sahel States.

On Saturday, Burkina Faso and Niger announced, like Mali in 2022, their departure from the anti-jihadist organization G5 Sahel, favoured by Western partners.

France ‘open to resettle’ South Pacific islanders threatened by rising sea levels

0

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna has said she is open to any resettlement request from tiny South Pacific nations threatened by rising sea levels, similar to Australia’s recent agreement with Tuvalu.

Speaking in Canberra on Monday, Colonna said France had watched with “great interest” last month when Australia offered Tuvalu a lifeline to help residents escape the rising seas and increased storms brought by climate change.

At a meeting of Pacific leaders in the Cook Islands in November, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a plan that will initially allow up to 280 Tuvaluans to come to Australia each year.

Tuvalu has a population of 11,000, and its low-lying atolls make it particularly vulnerable to global warming. Open to consider ‘specific requests’

Colonna said she was not sure if the French Pacific territories of French Polynesia and New Caledonia had the capacity to make similar offers.

“I’m open to consider any specific request,” Colonna told the National Press Club of Australia.

“But … the size of the Australian continent makes a big difference with the size and beauties of French Polynesia and New Caledonia,” she added.

Colonna said the Australian deal initiated by Tuvalu was one way to address some of the challenges posed by climate change.

“I’d rather see climate change being controlled and mastered,” Colonna said.

“Pre-emptive action maybe is better than taking some corrective measures when it is late,” she added.

She said she did not know the details of the Australia-Tuvalu treaty but was confident it respected basic principles of international law.

Australia-Tuvalu agreement
The treaty commits Australia to assist Tuvalu in response to major natural disasters, health pandemics and military aggression, Albanese said in a statement.

It also gives Australia veto power over any security or defence-related agreement Tuvalu wants to make with any other country such as China.

Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano said the new arrangement with Australia respected both nations’ sovereignty and committed each country to supporting the other through such challenges as climate change.

Colonna spoke to the media ahead of a meeting at Parliament House with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

The two ministers signed a bilateral agreement on Pacific development cooperation.

Pacific defence ministers meet in New Caledonia
Meanwhile, Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles also met with French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu on Monday in New Caledonia where they have gathered for a conference with their South Pacific counterparts.

Colonna said Marles and Lecornu were negotiating an agreement on reciprocal access to Australian and French military facilities in the region and increased joint activities.

Wong said Australia was keen to work more closely with the French military, particularly in the Pacific.

France and Australia’s relations have improved with the election of Albanese’s government last year after a previous administration angered Paris in 2021 by canceling a €60 billion contract for a fleet of French-built submarines.

Psychiatric ‘failure’ blamed for Paris knife attack: interior ministry

0

France’s interior minister Gérald Darmanin said there were clear failures in the psychiatric care of a radicalised Islamist who stabbed a German tourist to death in central Paris at the weekend. The attacker and members of his family remain in custody as an investigation gets underway.

Speaking on French television channel BFMTV on Monday morning, Darmanin said: “There was clearly a failure, not from the point of view of his monitoring by the intelligence services, but a psychiatric failure,” adding the attacker had an “acute mental illness”.

“Doctors said on several occasions that he was doing better, was more normal and could be free,” the Interior Minister added.

Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a French national of Iranian origin born in 1997, killed a 23-year-old German-Filipino man with two blows from a hammer and four from a knife on Saturday evening close to the Eiffel Tower. Two other people were injured.

Four people – the attacker and three other people from his family and close circle – were still in custody on Monday morning, French news agency AFP reported.

‘Terrorist plot’ probe after deadly Paris stabbing
The investigation is being handled by France anti-terror prosecutors who have launched a probe into a suspected “terrorist” plot.

German prosecutors announced they would open a parallel investigation.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had earlier said “the threat of Islamist terrorism is acute and serious”, saying “the war in Gaza” had “worsened the threat”.

On Sunday, France’s top anti-terror prosecutor Jean-François Ricard said the man’s mother had reported concerns about him as recently as October, but there was insufficient proof at the time to take legal action.

The 26-year-old suspect had pledged allegiance to Islamic State in a video recorded beforehand, according to Ricard.

He had already been arrested in 2016 for planning an attack, eventually serving four years in prison and under close watch following his release.

Rajabpour-Miyandoab had allegedly been radicalised through contacts on the Internet rather than meeting people at a mosque, Darmanin emphasised, adding the attacker had also been in touch with perpetrators of similar past attacks.

“Terrorism is changing and exploiting the weaknesses of our system,” said Darmanin.

Far-right call for more detentions, deportations
Meanwhile, far-right National Rally MP Marine Le Pen claimed on French radio on Monday that French intelligence services have been overwhelmed. She accused the government of not taking appropriate measures to off-set an increase in terrorist attacks.

“I’m not questioning the intelligence services – who are doing a very good job – but… they have too many people to keep track of,” Le Pen said on France Bleu Nord radio station.

“If we started by deporting all those foreigners from our country who are radicalised, if we already considered stripping [them] of their nationality and deporting those who have committed terrorist acts – or those who are radicalised – there would be far fewer people to keep track of,” Le Pen continued.

She also called for laws to be strengthened, mentioning “detention, which allows for much tighter control, or even imprisonment of those who are particularly dangerous … following their conviction for terrorist offences in particular”.

“The danger is increasing rather than decreasing”, she added, pointing out that there are “dozens of people coming out of prison every year who have been convicted of serious terrorist offences and who are still radicalised”.

On Sunday, RN president Jordan Bardella had already pointed to the government’s “weakness”, and called for the debate on security detention to be “reopened”.

Security jitters ahead of 2024 Olympics
The attack has amplified security concerns over the Olympics, due to begin with an unprecedented opening ceremony on the river Seine which experts see as a potential target for an attack.

Saturday’s attack occurred on the Quai de Grenelle – a spot included in the plans for the opening ceremony.

But Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said there was no plan to scrap the idea while indicating that the ceremony could be adapted.

“There is no plan B, we have a plan A within which we have several alternatives,” she told France Inter radio on Monday.

France has been on high alert since raising its security threshold in October, when a Chechen-origin man with a knife killed a teacher in a school in northern France.

European security officials have warned of a growing risk of attacks by Islamist militants amid the Israel-Hamas war, with the biggest threat likely from “lone wolf” assailants who are hard to track.

RESTORE COURT INJUNCTION, PF ARGUES BEFORE HIGH COURT

RESTORE COURT INJUNCTION, PF ARGUES BEFORE HIGH COURT

HIGH COURT HEARS PF VS MILES SAMPA CASE

Lusaka- Monday 4th December 2023

Lawyers for the Patriotic Front have argued that the Court Injunction granted to the party on 25th October 2023 restraining Miles Sampa to hold himself as PF President must be restored to protect the proceedings that are before court.

Makebi Zulu and Jonas Zimba of Makebi Zulu Advocates argued before Judge Situmbeko Chocho that the failure by the court to restore the Injunction would tilt the balance of convenience in favour of Miles Sampa who held an illegal Conference.
The lawyers argued that failure tondo so would not preserve the court proceedings before the Court as they would be rendered academic.

Patriotic Front Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda has sued on behalf of the Patriotic Front, expelled Matero MP, Miles Sampa for holding an illegal Conference and for holding himself as PF President.

Lawyers for the Patriotic Front, Hon. Makebi Zulu argued that the matter before Judge Timothy Katenekwa were different as the recent atrocities committed by Sampa in August and October 2023 against the Party were fresh and different from those atrocities that caused his suspension in February 2023.

He argued that the Injunction that was granted by Judge Katenekwa did not restrict the operations of the Patriotic Front.

The lawyers argued that the earlier Injunction granted to Sampa in February 2023 didn’t give him immunity or licence to commit future crimes or atrocities against the Party as he did when he stormed the Party Secretariat and held an illegal Conference.

The lawyers have insisted that the matters before Judge Timothy Katenekwa were totally different to the matter before Hon. Judge Situmbeko Chocho.

Hon.Zulu stated that Hon. Given Lubinda appointed Raphael Nakacinda as Secretary General in his capacity as Vice President in the absence of the President as provided for in the Constitution and did not breach the court injunction granted to Miles Sampa by Lusaka High Court Judge.

The matter came up to hear the preliminary matter raised by Miles Sampa’s lawyers and the inter-party hearing for the Injunction.

On 21st November, 2023, Judge Chocho joined to the case Hon. Brian Mundubile, Hon. Greyford Monde and Hon. Kafwaya Mutotwe, presidential candidates in the Patriotic Front.

The trio is arguing that Sampa held an illegal Conference outside the provisions of the Party Constitution, Party regulations and party rules.

The matter has been adjourned to a date that the Court will advise.

THREATS OF VIOLENCE – MR EDGAR LUNGU’S MODE OF OPERATION

0

THREATS OF VIOLENCE – MR EDGAR LUNGU’S MODE OF OPERATION

In psychology, it is said that a behavior that gets rewarded is likely to be maintained and becomes a part of a person’s permanent behavior. This is sometimes called behavioral modification. If a child in school is rewarded for one good performance, rest assured that it won’t be the last performance you’ll see from that child.

This is the pattern around which Mr. Lungu’s behavior has been modified. When vying for the highest office in the land, Mr. Lungu used violence or threats of it to secure adoption as a presidential candidate in the election he eventually won in 2015.

How can we forget his behavior at Mulungushi Rock of Authority against Guy Scott and one Miles Sampa ? Recall the burning of motor vehicle tires when he was removed as PF Secretary-General. Those who may have forgotten will remember Harry Kalaba’s wrinkled face when issuing threats against Acting President Mr. Guy Scott.

The utilization of violence as a political strategy made Mr. Lungu the President of Zambia and nearly kept him in power for life.

From then on, Mr. Lungu believed in violence to an extent that he set up points of terror to perpetuate violence. He established points like Kamugodi, Intercity, etc., as his cells for violence. When he wanted a job done, he just sent a word to those cadres manning his well-established cells of terror, and they acted.

On several occasions, he got his way through the use of violence or the threat of it.

Recall during the presidential election petition, after the court ruled on Friday night that two parties to the petition be given two days each to submit and respond.

Noticing that Mr. Lungu would lose his fraudulently acquired victory, he dispatched two or three of his cells led by Chongu and directed them to camp at the Supreme Court grounds to issue threats against the judges. This move was even broadcast on ZNBC to ensure the judges saw those images.

When Monday came, Mr. Lungu had his way. Not only did PF lawyers not turn up for the court hearing, but the judges yielded to the threats and flip-flopped, coming up with the 14 days diversion.

Furthermore, in the aftermath of that joke of a petition ruling, Mr. Lungu continued with his threats and earned yet another reward. He managed to get a registrar of the High Court to swear him into office.

This did not stop; Mr. Lungu continued to thrive on threats of violence. During another episode of his breaking the law with impunity, when seeking a third term of office, he once again issued a veiled threat against the judges in Solwezi. He warned the judges not to be overly ambitious and go the Kenyan way, lest they set the country on fire.

After the threat to the judges, they passed the most weird judgment. First, they refused to mention Mr. Lungu in the judgment but just interpreted the periods. Because they knew that mentioning Mr. Lungu would put them in violation of the Constitution and failure to make a judgment in his favor thugs would be unleashed on judges.

The latest event in his cocktail of threats was when he said during his Facebook presser that he would seek justice from the court, seek justice politically, or fight through civil disobedience. Again, he wants things to go his way.

This is what Mr. Lungu’s behavior is all about; it has been rewarded for far too long. Threats, threats, and more threats.

The most unfortunate part is Mr. Lungu would blame anybody else but himself. What was he doing with the government pension?

Because of the government pension he was earning all this while, there was no way he would remain a party member. Politics and party membership are intertwined. No way you can retire from politics and remain a political party president. For this reason, any list that has Mr. Lungu as a president is a forgery.

Mr. Lungu knows that no court will listen to his faction’s nonsense. All Miles Sampa would do is subpoena the Secretary to the Cabinet and ask him to present to court payment vouchers of Mr. Lungu’s retirement benefits if he claimed to be the legitimate president of the party. Surprisingly a man who sunk our nation into debt, corruption, violence, Lawlessness and all kinds of atrocities thinks he has the solution for our nation.

Case over.

Lungu is ashamed of his presidency – Chabinga

EDGAR Lungu has no courage to face the public or the media to discuss his presidency because he is ashamed of it, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Robert Chabinga has charged.

Reacting to former president’s recorded Facebook video last Friday in which he vowed to use all means necessary to return to power in order to promote democracy, Chabinga wondered what kind of democracy Lungu was talking about.

The Mafinga Constituency PF lawmaker noted that Lungu’s seven-year presidency was marked by heavy handedness and countless undemocratic activities.

“That is why, two years after losing power president Lungu has never held a press briefing to speak about his presidency,” Chabinga said.

The lawmaker expressed shock that Lungu could say the country had no democracy when his thugs beat up people who voiced out against his rule while he used government bodies to close down critical media.

“Because of the uninspiring democratic record during his reign, president Lungu has no courage to hold a press briefing to discuss his presidency or answer questions from objective journalists. He is afraid and he is ashamed, Chabinga said.

“Even that so called press briefing on Friday, there were no journalists. It was recorded in secret location by Emmanuel Mwamba and then the posted on Facebook,” he added.

Chabinga branded Lungu’s current political activities as comedy urging him to take some rest.

“President Lungu deserves to rest rather than parade himself and issuing misguided, uncoordinated statements and pure comedy, as was the case last Friday,” Chabinga said.

He explained that the formation of patriotic Front (PF) government in 2011 ignited optimism about accountability and transparency in the running of the affairs of both the party and country.

“However let me be quick to indicate that in subsequent, years during the reign of President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu or ECL, both the party and country became shadows of themselves,” added Chabinga.

He questioned Lungu’s reluctance to hand over power within the party, labeling it as political intrigue and manipulation.

“President Lungu by virtue of him failing to handover power at party level by perpetually holding on following his disastrous performance in 2021 general elections, is a clear case of political intrigue, blackmail and manipulation,” Chabinga said.

“As a democrat, President Lungu should realize that President Miles Sampa is the legitimate leader of the country’s biggest opposition party, as he is duly recognized by the national statutes in conformity with the supreme laws of the land.”

The opposition leader emphasized the need for remorse from Lungu and condemned any unorthodox means to reclaim power.

He urged law enforcement agencies to handle such matters impartially.

Chabinga further advised fellow opposition members to accept the changed leadership in the National Assembly and PF, stressing the importance of discipline, decorum, and constructive checks and balances.

“I’m advising my fellow Honourable Members of Parliament from the opposition PF that we need to accept reality and understand that leadership in the National Assembly has changed,” said Chabinga.

´Don’t Arrest Kangombe´ says Pastor Kennedy Mambwe

From The Analysis Kbntv-04.12.23

Pastor Kennedy Mambwe, the CEO of Kbntv has beseeched state police to stop a veiled scheme to arrest Kamfinsa Legislator veiled Christopher Kangombe on trumped up charges of inciting the public to assault government.

On his widely followed television platform, ´The Analysis´ where he features with Ambassador Anthony Mukwita hosted by Innocent Phiri, Pastor Mambwe said the planned arrest of member of parliament Kangombe would further shrink the already thin democratic space in Zambia.

Pastor Mambwe also described as sad, the arrest and detention without bail of Zambian online editor Thomas Zyambo who runs a controversial ´investigative ´online newspaper called ´The Whistle Blower´.

“We condemn the ongoing machinations of trying to arrest Kamfinsa MP hon. Kangombe as much s we condemn the arrest of journalist Thomas Zyambo whom we feel must be released immediately unconditionally,” the firebrand TV owner Mambwe said.

On the same programme, Ambassador Anthony Mukwita a published author and former Editor in Chief who has won international media and diplomacy awards implored Zambia´s President Hakainde Hichilema to show empathy regarding the death of some 50 illegal miners in the Copperbelt province of Zambia instead of attending an environment conference in Dubai that could have been attended by an ambassador.
“When a life is lost, it doesn’t matter how many lives are lost,” Ambassador Mukwita said, “President Hichilema must find it in his heart to stop everything he is doing to show empathy to the families that have lost their beloved bread winners that’s what good leaders do.”
Ambassador Mukwita said much as Mr Hichilema was so loved that he won a landslide in 2021 with over 2 million votes, Zambian voters may start questioning the President regarding his capacity for ´emotional intelligence´, a crucial ingredient to leadership.

Ambassador Anthony Mukwita stated that the death of some 60 illegal miners is a symptom of a broken economy in Zambia that has the worst performing currency in the world.

The Analysis panel discussed various socio-political-economic issues but remained cautious of the fact that despite the law providing for freedom of the press, anyone that utters words President Hichilema doesn’t like can get arrested in Zambia today, as ably demonstrated by state police.

The list of arrested and detained perceived enemies of President Hichilema, the seventh President of Zambia is on the rise with civil rights groups and churches sounding alarm that no administration has arrested so many dissenters in two years as President Hichilema has done in the entire 59-year history of Zambia for the first time.

MP Kangombe according to insiders may face arrest for simply stating that if Zambians cannot be allowed to express themselves through existing legal channels such as the courts of law, parliament of or public demonstrations, they may create another avenue to show dissent.
Hon. Kangombe´s statement is not different from the statement Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba made regarding mass demonstrations that got him arrested overnight.

Arresting political or people with dissenting has become normal in Zambia once seen as the last bastion of democracy in Africa, with free expression becoming an expensive and luxurious good.

Many Zambians according to political pundits now prefer to stay quite and safe than speak with dissent in public for fear of arrest under President Hichilema´s administration with sixth President of Zambia Edgar Lungu recently warning that, “No one will be spared.”

Zambia has now become a very dangerous place- Canisius Banda

0

COP28UAE
[The Curious Case of Power, World Order and Science]
_______

Zambia has now become a very dangerous place.

To paraphrase, Zambia is now one of the most economically and geopolitically important places in the world, whose innate potential can change lives and transform the world.

Each Zambian that seeks to lead this country ought to be aware of this development.

Zambia is now a fulcrum of an impending global reset.

Dear reader, read this article carefully. It is perhaps one of the most important you will ever read.

Zambia has now become a theatre of war. And at the centre of this gargantuan geopolitical event is climate change.

A few days ago, over 170 heads of State and over 70, 000 other delegates, converged in the United Arab Emirates [UAE] to attend the 2023 Conference of Parties on Climate Change.

What is true but shocking is that if you were to ask these leaders individually what this conference is really about, none if at all any, would give you a coherent or convincing answer.

Few know though.

On the other hand, most world leaders do not know what really is happening.

All they are bombarded with is a daily barrage of scary and mind-altering PR that hurricanes are increasing, the Earth’s temperature will soon fry everyone, droughts are everywhere, tropical diseases will proliferate, flash floods are now killing millions and that the Earth is running out of water.

And that African and other ‘poor and developing countries’, are bearing the hardest brunt of this ‘climate crisis.’

But is all this really, really true? Is there really such a thing as a climate crisis?

Most of these leaders, more so the Africans, are merely being led by the nose by the hidden hand of the powerful climate change lobby whose agenda might not be readily visible to their naked eye.

In the world today, there are two things that are very, very dangerous.

In the wrong hands, these two things can terribly maim and kill.

One is religion and the other is science. Religion has God and science has evidence.

Arguing against either of them is one of the most problematic endeavours any human being can ever engage in. These two are among the most arrogant fields of thought ever created by man.

And as a consequence, they have become powerful and not-to-be-questioned conduits of global corruption. They now constitute powerful instruments in everyday use for global mind manipulation and people control.

Though coming with the cloak of God, no one should follow any religion hook, line and sinker, unquestioningly.

Though science comes under the guise of evidence, a significant fraction of this science is flawed.

No one should ever be swayed by both at face value.

‘Excellencies, Earth’s vital signs are failing…we need leadership, cooperation and political will for action…Renewable energy is the gift that keeps giving…The science is clear…We must ultimately stop burning fossil fuels…Not reduce, not abate, but phase out…The economics are clear. The global shift to renewables is inevitable,’ the UN Secretary General Antonio GUETERRES poetically coerced the raptly listening world leaders.

But the question must be asked. What is Antonio GUETERRES really saying? Who wrote the speech for him? What is the real interest of its authors? And where does he draw his strength from to speak the way he did?

Note that to shut everyone up, he strategically says the science is clear. But is it?

The science about climate change, dear reader, isn’t clear at all. The debate isn’t closed. Or does a jaundiced someone want it closed?

What is clear is that, just like Nature, all technology that we create must be efficient, clean and sustainable.

But to claim that the burning of fossil fuels is the lead cause of climate change just isn’t true. This is stretching the truth/evidence a bit.

Dear reader, you will be surprised to learn that one of the leading causes of global warming and climate change is the sun.

Yes, our own sun and its cyclical behaviour account for our climate.

Nonetheless, as both a political and economic statement only meant as a primer, a prelude to a new world order, the UN Secretary General’s speech retains its merit.

Further, note that commonly, the phrases global warming and climate change are often used interchangeably.

It must be mentioned that Earth, as a small component of the Universe, is itself a complete renewable celestial living thing.

And worth stating is that Earth on its own naturally produces more green house gasses than all human activity put together.

Who then is going to call Earth to order?

Interestingly, the COP uses strange words such as de-carbonisation.

What really should be de-carbonised, noting that carbon is one of the most prevalent elements in Nature?

Does Zambia’s own State House fully know what this de-carbonisation really means?

Has humanity forgotten that carbon dioxide is a vital resource for the integrity of the Earth?

Has humanity forgotten that without carbon dioxide the world would be without food?

If Earth had excess carbon dioxide, wouldn’t harvesting of this resource and its storage be the business of the future?

Shouldn’t de-carbonisation devices be attached to industrial or car exhaust pipes to give us carbon and oxygen as products for reuse?

Has it ever occurred to Zambia’s State House and many other third world capitals that this climate change movement could just be a Hegelian ruse only intended to kowtow them towards serious behavioural change for purposes of resetting the global power and economic order?

What if, under the guise of climate change, there was an economic geopolitical war going on?

So then, what climate now is really changing?

As earlier stated, how come the Earth itself produces more green house gases than all burping cows, bad jalopies and human beings put together? How is COP28 and all other oncoming COPs going to address that?

Look at the following green house gases and their significance on global warming:

1. Water vapour – 98%
2. Carbon dioxide – 1.96%
3. Methane – 0.0083%
4. Nitrous oxide – 0.0015%
5. Ozone – 0.0002%
6. CFCs – 0.0000%

So then if these are the culprit gases for global warming, what then is the problem?

How come no one is talking about water vapour?

The question every curious mind like mine ought to ask is, is human activity alone really, really capable of changing the framework that governs climate on Earth?

Regional pollution, intrinsically a transient phenomenon, is common and can readily be dealt with but are human beings really capable of irreversibly altering the existential default settings of the Earth?

Or are we just guilty of overrating ourselves as polluters?

But then perhaps all these questions are unnecessary.

What if the real aim is to shift global geopolitical and economic power from the East [read OPEC – Angola, Bagrain, Iran, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Venezuela, etc] to the West [read electric]?

What if climate change was only a strategic ruse? What if it was just the required whip to frighten everyone towards obedience for purposes of shifting global reliance on oil to something else?

Further, what if climate change was a new approach to coercive lending, to get countries into debt and encourage and consolidate specific investment behaviour?

Worth noting is that Zambia, coupled with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has all the minerals required for the success of this transformation, namely cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel, and then some.

This then is what puts Zambia on the geopolitical spot. This then is what makes Zambia one of the most economically exciting and dangerous places on Earth today.

Dear reader, from the foregoing, it is hoped that now you fully understand why an office of AFRICOM was set up in Zambia.

It is also hoped that you have an idea why STARLINK was given operating permission in Zambia.

These installations are not primarily for the interests of Zambia and Zambians.

They are strategic fixtures intended to safeguard Western interests.

AFRICOM is a combatant arm of the US Army.

On the other hand, STARLINK, for surveillance purposes, is a contractor of the US Army.

And in concert, the US signed an MOU with Zambia to guarantee the intended and successful shift to ‘clean’ energy.

Whatever the case may be, whichever way the climate change argument goes, depending on its leadership, Zambia as an accidental game changer, is now in the unique position to skyrocket its per capita income and subsequently end its poverty.

However, the downside to this development, this urgent and increased demand for the required transformational resources, might only be entrenched colonialism, national instability, increased exploitation and national wealth stripping/plunder.

Still, in the end, the final outcome is in the hands of the Zambians themselves.

Further, bear in mind that, in Nature, there is really no such thing as clean energy.

All energy is energy, and as the first law of thermodynamics states, ‘energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another.’

Dirty or unclean energy is only a human construct with its origins rooted in bias and ignorance, devoid of utilitarian value save only as a label/term for communication purposes only.

What exists is only our own inefficient use of energy and our own collective limited understanding of energy itself, as typified for example by the ill-informed Swtch and Save campaigns by our own ZESCO.

Everything that exists is only a resource for everything else. Always remember that, dear reader.

All in Nature is green. And one of the immutable laws that govern Earth is that of balance. Everything balances in the end.

It follows that the term renewable energy is then nothing but a misnomer.

As King Charles aptly put it: ‘The Earth does NOT Belong to us. We belong to Earth.’

The arrogance, therefore, with which man goes on about his life ought to cease. The sooner we agree with King Charles the better.
But then the more enlightened we become, inevitably, the humbler we shall be.

Human beings form only a very tiny fraction of the Universal ecosystem.

To claim that all there is to existence is human beings is therefore only a flaw of cognition.

Phasing out fossil fuels is not only untenable but it is also unwise.

It is new, improved methods of their utilisation that we must research and develop, encourage, and found new start-ups upon.

We will now end this article on a cautionary note.

That off-grid solutions must always exist for the security and survival of mankind.

Thinking the same way by mankind must be legislated against, avoided and strongly discouraged.

It follows then that for the survival and security of mankind, some things will necessarily have to remain analogue.

Diversity saves.

It is a dictate of nature that monopolies are antithetical to life.

Hope is and remains.

Why Hakainde Hichilema hates me- Thomas Allan Zgambo

Why Hakainde Hichilema hates me

By Thomas Allan Zgambo.

As promised last night, it has become necessary for me to trace the origins of the animosity that President Hakainde Hichilema as an individual harbours against me personally, so that Zambians can understand some of the troubles we have experienced over the years both as Zambian Whistleblower and Thomas Allan Zgambo as an individual.

But before I give details, I want to give context to two issues that I mentioned last night, which concerns Mr. John Phiri , Former Managing Director of Times Printpark.

I stated that he has been a Correspondent for the Zambian Whistleblower, which is correct and should be understood that this is in the same capacity as others like John Noel Lungu, Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa or State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota and many others.

All these are Correspondents who write articles from time to time in their names, and therefore it is surprising that Mr. John Phiri should be isolated and targeted for arrest.

Such an Action would be nothing else than criminalising the practice of Journalism.

The second issue concerns how the Zambian Whistleblower received information from the Public and Institutions , whether government or private.

At the top of the Zambian Whistleblower, they have a permanent feature that explains the Publication being anchored in the Whistleblower law , whose worldwide prevalence stems from an understanding of the huge role Whistleblowers must play in fighting Corruption and Abuse of power and resources.

There are Zambians in virtually every institution who understand their Patriotic duty in this quest, and are always coming forward with information they believe is helpful in this National cause.

These sources are everywhere and therefore it is a futile exercise to believe that their identities can be forced out of Zambian Whistleblower. It is a non starter. Ethical Journalists never ever disclose sources of information.

GENESIS OF THE HH HATRED.

Zambians will recall that when President Michael Sata died, one of the immediate problems was identifying someone to be candidate for President in the ensuing by- election of 2015. I’m a Patriot and I always want the best for my country starting from my School days.

A Dominant School of thought then emerged that such a person should be a mature person who would agree to be President just for a year and some months as the country was preparing for a substantive General Election in 2016. Apart from maturity, we also wanted a person who had a cross country appeal and wide experience.

It was then that the name of Rupiah Banda was floated that since he had already experience as a Republican President and he also handled the death of his predecessor Levy Mwanawasa in a mature manner, he should be recalled from retirement, to take back the Presidency of The Movement for Multi Party Democracy ( MMD) because we knew then that the Party President Nevers Mumba could not win an election. This is the time there were intra party wrangles in the Patriotic Front between Edgar Lungu and Miles Sampa just like now.

The second step was finding RB’s Running Mate. It was suggested that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema should be approached to be Mr.Banda’s Running mate and a team was tasked to take this message to Mr. Hichilema.

Of course Mr. Hichilema refused and instead insisted that he should be Presidential Candidate whilst Mr. Rupiah Banda should be his Running Mate.

There was a sharp disagreement on this matter and it was, infact the beginning of the Chasm that has become tribal divide in Zambian politics and the troubles in MMD.

It is widely believed in the MMD circles that Mr. Bradford Machila who was then the National Executive Committee Member incharge of Lands in the MMD NEC was Mr. Hichilema’s man inside the MMD and was influential in leading ” The Zambezi Group” which included among them Professor Geofrey Lungwagwa, Kabinga Pande, Ambrose Lufuma, Mundia Ndalamei, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, Dr Christopher Kalila, Sara Sayifwanda Suresh Desai, Bradford Machila himself and many others to split and support the candidature of Hakainde Hichilema.

The only notable person from the ” Zambezi Region” that did not go the UPND way was then Mwandi Member of Parliament Dr. Michael Kaingu. Levy Ngoma was the only notable one from the” Luapula, Northern and Eastern Region” to go to UPND.

The “Northern, Luapula and Eastern” Region comprising Vincent Mwale, Dora Siliya, Felix Mutati, Dr. Eustacio Kazonga, Late Victoria Kalima and many others went with the Rupiah Banda group. The only notable person from ” the Zambezi Region” who did not go to UPND was Lucky Mulusa who remained with RB.

THE ZAMBIAN WATCHDOG FACTOR.

Because at the time I was working with the Zambia Watchdog, which provided key online Media Support for Mr. Hichilema’s campaign, the expectation by Mr. Hichilema and others was that I would support HH in the this Tug of War over who should be Presidential Candidate between RB and HH.

HH learnt that I was in support of Rupiah Banda contesting for President to finish the One year which was left of Sata’s term, to provide a mature, steady experienced hand over of the affairs of Zambia before the actual Presidential Elections in 2016.

This was the beginning of Mr. Hichilema’s dislike for me. He always linked me to Rupiah Banda who took his supporters to Edgar Lungu who eventually won the By- Elections after Rupiah Banda was barred from standing on the MMD ticket giving a leeway to Dr. Nevers Mumba to stand on the MMD ticket.

It should not surprise you Zambians that when RB took his team to the PF, I continued promoting the interest of HH and the UPND because my only interest in the Presidential By- Election was Rupiah Banda and not PF or Edgar Lungu.

It should not then surprise you Zambians that although when Edgar Lungu’s Patriotic Front failed, and I was still working with the Zambia Watchdog, now campaigning to make Mr. Hichilema President, he never forgave me according to people close to him.

What followed after this is now common knowledge. When Mr. Hichilema became President of Zambia, he made sure that the whole group that worked on the Zambia Watchdog to get him the Presidency, I was the only one excluded and unrewarded in any way, especially that I was the only ” Non Zambezi” Member of the team.

Although I suffered the same fate of arrest and detention as Mr. Clayson Hamasaka, the new government concluded only his case and compensated him.

As for me, even after another case of unlawful detention was ruled in my favour by Judge Timothy Katanekwa, no compensation has been released and matters are stalled and still being frustrated.

The last time the Solicitor General suggested that I change my lawyers to a Law firm owned by a Lawyer who is from the ” Zambezi” Region. My original lawyers are from the Northern Region.

Despite me appointing the lawyers the Solicitor General recommended as Co- Advocates because I refused to abandone my original lawyers, to date nothing is happening and I have since forgotten about it. If they want they can get the money and share it amongst themselves.

All this is clear evidence that the negative treatment I have received at the hands of the State, and this continously being targeted for arrest, is motivated by the President’s personal hatred, and those who serve him closely understand this and are quick to push the Agenda so that they please him.

My appeal to President Hichilema is to forgive me if he thinks my supporting of Mr. Rupiah Banda then disadvantaged him. My interests then and now are always driven by Patriotism. I stand by my decision up to now.

My worry is that once I’m confined, I will be poisoned and will face a slow death. That is how Journalists like me are are treated by Goverment’s that hate transparency.

By the time I was writing this article, these are the two messages that someone sent me from The Zambia Police.

  1. Zambia Police Service has launched a man hunt for Mr. Thomas Zyambo, Zambians Whistle Chief Blower Editor for exposing ZNS as using GMO maize for producing mealie-meal. He is also likely to be charged with seditious practices.
  2. Meanwhile Mr. Thomas Zyambo is seeking legal counsel from *

Pray for me. I’m worried about my physical life.

I have two Children and I’m very sure my family can look after them. My wish is that whatever the State does to me, and I died Bury me at any of Mr. Hichilema’s properties so that he can freely look at the grave of a youngman who helped him to get to power but killed by the same State. Now I’m treated like a Thorn in the Flesh.

Good Night.

T.I. and His Son King Harris Settle Differences After Public Dispute

0

T.I. and his son, King Harris, have hash things out behind the scenes after their very public dispute shook the internet a week ago.

The younger Harris has been in the headlines a lot lately for some questionable behavior, and it seems he and his parents finally butt heads while attending an NFL game in Atlanta. King was on Instagram Live when the argument started, which quickly reached boiling point, and he and T.I. yelled at each other before the rapper seemingly put him in a headlock.

Sources told Urban Islandz that the father and son have since talked it over and apologized to each other. We’re told the fight is now water under the bridge, but T.I. still feels like his son is doing too much sometimes. “All that is now water under the bridge,” sources said. “They both apologize for the spectacle and moved on from it. It’s just a little family mishap that unfortunately was streamed live for the world to see, but all is good in the Harris household.”

King Harris new song
T.I.’s son King also released a new track dedicated to his grandmother, Tiny’s mother, in his ongoing feud with his family over them abandoning him and his grandmother raising him.

King was on live video arguing with his mother and father on Sunday at the Falcons honor game, almost causing his father to put hands on him. During the argument, King insisted that he was raised by his grandmother, and he was raised outside of wealth and money while the other children in the family grew up rich and spoiled.

However, Tiny insisted that King was always at his grandmother’s because he was always crying and fighting to go. She also teased him that he was using a baby pacifier until he was a 12-year-old.

The young artiste, however, seemed upset as he argued with his parents. It’s not the first time that King has tried to assert some type of street cred by claiming that he grew up in the “trenches” and was gangsta.

However, in his latest song, the young rapper dedicated the song “Grandma Boy” to his granny Dianne Cottle Pope.

“I ain’t come from the 8, I grew up rough stay with my grandma, you know how we play,” he said, adding that “I grew up in a muthaf*ing area where dem nas don’t play,” he said.

King previously claimed on Funny Marco’s show that the family reality show portrayed a false reality.

“It’s a lot about that TV show, man, that got people confused. Because I live with my Grandma. You know, we’ll go to the house on, like, a weekend. They’ll say, ‘Hey we shooting today, we need y’all at the house.’ They come get me from my Grandma house and right after we done, when the cameras go off, I’m right back to my Grandma house,” he said as if his parents did not want him around.

In the meantime, producer Hitmaka seemingly shared words of encouragement to T.I. after the video surfaced of King acting out. “I love tip & his whole family. I used to be exactly like king as a kid & now as a grown a$$ man with sum money I 10000% know I was tripping. Be smart lil bruh,” he wrote on Twitter.

‘Terrorist plot’ probe after deadly Paris stabbing

0

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into a “terrorist plot” after a man known to the authorities as a radical Islamist with mental health troubles stabbed a tourist to death and wounded two other people in central Paris at the weekend before being arrested.

The attack around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) Saturday near the Eiffel Tower came as France is at its highest alert level against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Terrorism prosecutors told AFP on Sunday they were investigating the knife and hammer attacker, identified as Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a French national born in 1997 to Iranian parents.

Arrested at the scene, he is suspected of murder and attempted murder “in connection with a terrorist plot”.

A 23-year-old man, identified by a judicial source as a German-Filipino citizen, died in the attack, though a taxi driver intervened to keep the attacker away from his wife.

Patrick Pelloux, an emergency doctor on duty at the time of the attack, said the couple were both nurses, adding that the woman was severely shocked but unhurt.

A 66-year-old British citizen and a 60-year-old French national were wounded in the attack.

Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau told broadcaster France 3 that the wounded victims suffered only “superficial (physical) traumas, but of course psychological traumas that will be enormous”.

Prosecutors announced a press conference for 7:30 pm on Sunday to give updates on the investigation.

Three people “close to” Rajabpour-Miyandoab were being held in custody on Sunday afternoon, prosecutors said.

Meanwhile government leaders including Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin were to hold a security meeting.

“We will not give in to terrorism,” Borne wrote on X, while President Emmanuel Macron offered his condolences to the family of the man killed. ‘Afghanistan and Palestine’

Rajabpour-Miyandoab, known to authorities for extremism, shouted “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “God is greatest”) as he struck on Saturday, Darmanin said at the scene by Bir Hakeim bridge over the River Seine.

The suspect, who lived with his parents in the Essonne region south of Paris, told police he could not stand Muslims being killed in “Afghanistan and Palestine” and accused France of being “an accomplice to what Israel is doing” in the Gaza Strip, Darmanin added.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on X that he was “devastated” by the attack, saying that “our thoughts are with the wounded, their families and friends”.

His Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had earlier warned that “the war in Gaza after Hamas’ terrorist act (of 7 October) has worsened the threat,” saying that “the threat of Islamist terrorism is acute and serious”.

Police and security sources confirmed the attacker had claimed responsibility in a social media video as he struck, speaking about “current events, the government (and) the murder of innocent Muslims”.

Investigators would scrutinise his medical history, a security source told AFP, saying the attacker was “very unstable and easily influenced”.

Rajabpour-Miyandoab was “being monitored in a way that did not mean he was being hospitalised, he was supposed to follow a course of treatment” for his mental health issues, said Rousseau, the health minister.

“As often in these cases, there’s a mixture of an ideology, an easily influenced person and, unfortunately, psychiatry,” he added.

Darmanin said the man had previously been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack in the Paris business district of La Défense, which he failed to carry out.

Mandela legacy battered by South Africa’s troubles

Soweto’s Vilakazi Street is packed each day with tourists and hawkers outside the home of Nelson Mandela that has been meticulously kept even as the democracy pioneer’s legacy has become rundown in the decade since his death.

Ntsiki Madela, who lives nearby and sells jewellery and hats on a table near the matchbox house museum at number 8115, is among many South Africans who feel let down.

While thankful that Mandela’s 16-year presence in the township now draws tourists, the 47-year-old said: “I haven’t seen any change from Mandela’s democracy and I don’t even see the need to vote.”

With a legislative election due in months — the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic vote — authorities are struggling to get people like Madela to register.

Voter numbers have fallen with every election since the first in 1994. And the people who do vote are increasingly turning against Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC) that has ruled since then.

Polls suggest the scandal-tainted ANC’s vote share could fall below 50 percent for the first time as Africa’s biggest economy slumbers and corruption taints its image.

Inequality rules

Unemployment is among the world’s highest at 32 percent of adults and wages for those in work are low.

Despite the end of apartheid, South Africa has the world’s lowest equality ranking, according to the World Bank.

The government and state firms are carrying more than $300 billion of debt and the figure worsens every day.

Street crime and murders have also grown over the past decade and some days Madela and her neighbours go without electricity for almost 12 hours a day.

“We only have enough income to feed our kids, there is constant load-shedding and the cost of living is unbearable,” said Madela, referring to the chronic power cuts.

Mandela is seen around the world as a moral compass for the way he wore down white minority rule and his vision of a multi-racial South Africa.

Critics say the ANC leaders who took over quickly dropped Mandela’s torch.

Mandela’s legacy has been “undermined” by his own party officials who are “corrupt” and have “deviated” from his “moral consciousness”, independent political analyst Prince Mashele told AFP.

Nic Borain, a political analyst working in financial markets, said there was a “kind of mythology” around the Mandela years that meant anyone following would struggle.

Power crisis

The government and the ANC have as big a fight on their hands to tackle apathy as they do debt.

Former president Jacob Zuma, who was forced out of office over corruption allegations, only avoided prison because of his poor health and a remission approved this year by his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In June the graft watchdog cleared Ramaphosa of allegations that he breached ethics by not reporting the theft of more than $500,000 in cash hidden in a sofa at his farm.

Down the road from Mandela’s house, 27-year-old teacher Sive Jizana sat with friends at a popular pub. Mandela’s legacy was “dying”, she said.

She noted the lack of running water and proper roads outside main cities. “And now we don’t have electricity,” she said.

Zandile Cubeni, a 24-year-old unemployed sociology graduate, said she would not join the voters’ list.

“A lot of my peers are jobless, we aren’t getting any tangible benefits,” Cubeni said, adding that Mandela’s legacy “has been made out to seem like something without any flaws, that’s not true.”

Some say Mandela’s name was over-hyped.

“We don’t really see what Mandela and all the others did for us… we are still poor,” a 43-year-old cashier, Thobile Cele, told AFP.

“We simply don’t even have a democracy anymore as long as… ANC is in power,” said Leigh-Ann Mathys, a member of parliament for the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters party.

Ten years after his death former South African president Nelson Mandela still inspires global tributes, including this mural at a prison in Spain. By MIGUEL RIOPA (AFP)
She said courts had been “captured” to operate in the ANC’s favour and there are doubts about institutions like the electoral commission during the 2024 vote.

Some Mandela loyalists are trying to make the public look beyond the apartheid battler’s name to map out a future direction. But Mandela’s family is publicly keeping the faith.

His grandson, Mandla Mandela, an ANC lawmaker, said the party had achieved many successes and some “spectacular failures” but overall South Africa’s democracy was still “healthy”.

“The key evil of colonialism was that it robbed our people of their land, and this remains the litmus test for how we measure transformation,” the 49-year-old said.

UN Security Council terminates its mission in war-hit Sudan

0

At the request of Sudanese authorities, the UN Security Council has ended the world body’s political mission in the African country ravaged by more than seven months of fighting between two rival generals.

Following a letter from Khartoum demanding an immediate end to the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), the Security Council adopted a resolution terminating its mandate as of Sunday.

Starting Monday, a three-month transition period would begin to allow for the departure of UNITAMS personnel and the transfer of its tasks to other UN agencies “where appropriate and to the extent feasible”.

The UN mission in Sudan employs 245 people, including 88 in Port Sudan, as well as others in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed last month.

Fourteen of the council’s 15 members adopted the resolution, while Russia abstained.

“Let me be clear. The United Kingdom would not have chosen to close UNITAMS at this moment,” said Britain’s deputy UN envoy James Kariuki, whose country drafted the text.

Added US envoy Robert Wood: “We are gravely concerned that a reduced international presence in Sudan will only serve to embolden the perpetrators of atrocities with dire consequences for civilians.”

Sudan armed conflict spreading to new regions, warns UN
Alarming violence
In the text, the council expressed “alarm at the continued violence and humanitarian situation, in particular violations of international humanitarian law and grave human rights violations and abuses” in Sudan.

The Security Council decision “is the culmination of its catastrophic abdication of responsibility to the civilians of Sudan at a moment when the risk of atrocities and large-scale human rights abuses is greater than ever,” Human Rights Watch UN director Louis Charbonneau said in a statement.

UNITAMS was put in place in 2020 to help support a democratic transition in Sudan following the fall the previous year of veteran Islamist autocrat Omar al-Bashir, who faced pressure from both the military and mass protests.

But in October 2021, the difficult path to civilian government was cut short, when army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan assumed full powers in a coup.

On April 15, before a deal on resuming the transition to democracy could be signed, fighting erupted between the Sudanese army led by Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

A few weeks later, Burhan demanded that UNITAMS chief Volker Perthes be sacked, placing blame for the violence on his shoulders.

The German diplomat, who was barred from returning to Sudan, ultimately stepped down in September, and has not been replaced.

Last month, saying the mission had been “disappointing,” the government in Khartoum demanded its immediate end, leaving the Security Council with virtually no choice but to withdraw, as the UN must operate with the host nation’s consent.

‘Call a spade a spade’
Just days ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres rejected all accusations made against the world body, pointing a finger at Burhan and Daglo, “two generals that completely disregard the interests of their population.”

“I think it’s time to call a spade a spade. This is the fault of those that sacrificed the interests of their people for a pure struggle for power,” Guterres said.

He has named Algerian diplomat Ramtane Lamamra as his personal envoy for Sudan.

The forced departure of UNITAMS is a new setback for the United Nations, which is facing a certain amount of hostility, notably in Africa, about the efficiency of its political and security missions.

Under pressure from Mali’s ruling junta, the Security Council ended its peacekeeping mission in that country (MINUSMA) in June, and its blue helmets should be full withdrawn by year’s end.

The civil war has left more than 10,000 dead since April, according to an estimate by the non-governmental organization Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (Acled), a figure that is widely considered an underestimate.

Six million people have been displaced, and much infrastructure destroyed, the UN says.

At COP28, Al Gore takes aim at host UAE’s emissions

0

Armed with satellite images of pipelines, former US vice president and climate champion Al Gore singled out the emissions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the COP28 talks in the oil-rich monarchy on Sunday.

Gore and Climate TRACE, an independent emissions tracker, had a message in Dubai to countries and industries around the world: no one can hide their emissions anymore.

Using a network of 300 satellites and artificial intelligence, Climate TRACE can now monitor emissions from more than 352 million sites from 10 industries.

Its data showed the UAE’s greenhouse gas emissions rose by 7.5 percent in 2022 from the previous year, compared to a 1.5 percent increase for the entire world.

“In large regions of the world, it’s very uncommon to have any self-reporting” of emissions, Al Gore said.

Speaking in the main plenary room of the COP28 site, Gore pointed to huge monitors showing satellite images of the major emitting sites in the UAE.

Another map showed leaks from pipelines.
“The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company still claims to have no emissions from methane or anything else from the transport of oil and gas,” Gore said.

“Well, actually, they do. We can see them from space,” he said.

The oil company, known as ADNOC, is headed by Sultan Al Jaber, whose appointment as president of COP28 infuriated climate campaigners.

ADNOC declined to comment when contacted by AFP about Gore’s comments.

Gore praised a pledge by 50 oil and gas companies, including ADNOC, to reach “near zero” methane emissions.

“This was a wonderful pledge,” Gore said. “But we’re going to be measuring whether they comply with this or not.”

“We have seen pledges in the past and we have seen misbehaviour by oil and gas companies in the past,” he added.

The Climate TRACE data release Sunday showed that global greenhouse gas emissions increased by 8.6 percent between 2015, the year the landmark Paris climate agreement was sealed, and 2022.

Just five countries — China, the United States, India, Indonesia and Russia — accounted for 75 percent of those emissions.

And China alone was responsible for nearly half of the global increase.

Gore, who shared the 2007 Nobel peace prize with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, warned that for COP28 to be considered a “historic” success, countries had to commit to phasing out fossil fuels.

Tough negotiations on the issue have started at the conference which is due to end on December 12.

“Phase out fossil fuels,” Gore thundered, drawing applause from the audience. “That is the solution to the climate crisis.”

US Navy intercepts drones fired in Red Sea from Yemen

0

A American military ship destroyed three flying machines after three regular boats were attacked in the Red Sea, according to the US military.

The USS Carney helped ships from 14 countries, including the UK, on Sunday after they were attacked from areas of Yemen controlled by Houthi rebels backed by Iran.

Two ships were hit by missiles, but no one got hurt.

A person from the Houthi group said their navy attacked two ships from Israel.

The Israeli army said the boats were not linked to Israel.

The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, took over some of Yemen in 2014 and caused a civil war.

Lately, it started attacking ships connected to Israel in the Red Sea because of Israel’s conflict with Hamas, which is backed by Iran, in Gaza.

The US military in charge of the Middle East said that the USS Carney found a missile blowing up near a cargo ship on Sunday morning.

It later destroyed a flying robot that was flying towards the Carney itself, but Centcom said it was not clear if the robot was trying to attack the Carney.

That day, the Unity Explorer got a little damaged when a missile from the Houthi-controlled area hit it.

The US ship found and destroyed another drone that was coming towards it while it was helping a ship in trouble.

Later, two more boats – one of them partly owned by the UK, both flying the flag of Panama – said they were hit by missiles. While going to help another ship, the USS Carney destroyed a third drone.

Centcom stated that the attacks put the lives of the ships’ crews in danger and posed a clear threat to global trade and maritime safety.

“We think that Iran is helping the Houthis in Yemen with these attacks,” the statement said.

The United States will think about the best ways to respond, with the help of its friends from other countries.

Earlier this week, a US warship caught armed men who had taken control of a tanker connected to Israel near Yemen.

Centcom said that rebels from Houthi-controlled area in Yemen fired two missiles at the warship.

The Houthis say they are part of a group connected to Iran that opposes Israel, the US, and the West.

Asylum plan: UK solicitors could be stationed in Rwanda

0

British lawyers may go to courts in Rwanda as part of an agreement that allows the UK government to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

It would try to solve the problems that the Supreme Court raised when it said the Rwanda plan was not allowed last month.

More information will be given on Tuesday. Home Secretary James Cleverly will go to Rwanda to sign the agreement.

It will be followed by a new law to stop the plan from being blocked in the courts again.

At the same time, the government is going to announce its plans to lower the number of people who can legally move to the country. This is because new data shows that there were a lot of people who moved to the country last year.

Starting in April 2022, some people who are seeking asylum will be sent to Rwanda to apply there.

After the Supreme Court ruling last month, government officials are hurrying to bring back the policy before spring, when they want the first flights to start.

People who are not given permission to stay in Rwanda as refugees can try to stay there for other reasons, or they can ask for protection in another safe country.

The highest court in the UK said no to the policy because it was not certain that the courts in Rwanda would follow a law called non-refoulment.

A country can’t send asylum seekers back to their home if it’s not safe for them.

After deciding, the government said it would ask for a formal agreement with Rwanda. It thought this would give better legal promises than the current deal they have.

A new agreement is almost finalized. It may involve British lawyers working in Rwandan courts to help with the Supreme Court’s worries, according to the media.

The Sunday Times said that the agreement would give Rwanda an extra £15m to hire more people to make its asylum processing system better and bigger.

The UK government has given £140m to Rwanda for the program. The first flight was supposed to happen in June 2022, but it was cancelled because of legal problems.

The Rwanda policy was made because many more people were coming to the UK illegally in small boats.

Legal migration

The government will also announce later how they plan to decrease the number of people coming to the country legally.

Backbenchers are asking ministers to do something because official numbers showed that last year 745,000 more people migrated than was thought.

Ministers are thinking about getting rid of the list of jobs where foreign workers can be hired for less pay than usual.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has said it may be a good idea to limit the number of people who can come to the UK with migrants.

Paris attack: Suspect’s mother ‘raised concern’ prior to assault

0

The mother of a man who is believed to have stabbed a German tourist to death near the Eiffel Tower in Paris had expressed worries about her son a few weeks before the incident, according to a prosecutor.

Two more people, including a man from Britain, got hurt in the attack on Saturday.

A 26-year-old man from France was arrested, and officials who investigate terrorism are looking into the case.

The French minister inside the country said the person who attacked failed to receive proper care for their mental health.

Gérald Darmanin said to BFM TV that the person who attacked had a serious mental illness. He also said that doctors had mentioned on a few occasions that the person was getting better, acting more normal, and could be released from care.

Prosecutor Jean-François Ricard said the suspect promised to support the Islamic State group (IS).

The prosecutor said that Armand R, who was born in France to Iranian parents, became a Muslim when he was 18 years old. In 2016, he was sent to jail for four years because he wanted to go to Syria and join IS.

Mr Ricard said the police were watching the suspect because they thought he might be involved in extremism. They have also arrested three people, including some of his family, for questioning.

He said that the attacker’s mother told the news that she was worried about her son’s behavior because he had become withdrawn and quiet in late October.

But, there wasn’t enough information to start a new trial, he said.

The police said the person they think did the bad thing was supposed to be getting help for mental health problems.

The person who died in the attack was a tourist from Germany who worked as a nurse.

Mr Darmanin said the person who got hurt was with his wife when someone attacked and killed him with a knife on Quai de Grenelle.

He said a taxi driver saved the wife’s life and the suspect ran away over a bridge over the River Seine.

After going to the other side of the river, he hurt two more people: a 60-year-old man from France and a 66-year-old tourist from Britain who got hit in the eye with a hammer.

The police used a Taser to stop the suspect and arrested them for planning to kill someone. They are also suspected of trying to kill someone as part of a terrorist plot.

The two hurt people got help from emergency workers and on Sunday, the Health Minister said to the French media that they were doing well.

A video posted online seemed to show the police catching the suspect with guns not too far from where the attack happened.

Mr Darmanin said the person who attacked was heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” and told police that he was upset because many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and Palestine.

The suspect also said that France helped cause the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza.

Kasaro is not fit to hold that ECZ office or clean enough to issue threats- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba
Kasaro is not fit to hold that ECZ office or clean enough to issue threats

I was extremely busy today that I didn’t even notice a malicious report from ECZ’s new Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro,a man who the Opposition have protested should not be holding that position because of his previous crimes at the Electoral Commission of Zambia, that caused his arrest and dismissal.

It was important for the Commission to employ an officer with unimpeachable character to attract credibility, trust and confidence in the Commission.

Any way Mr. Kasaro has come back to ECZ to perpetuate illegalities at the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Instead of acknowledging the irregularities and cleaning up the Electoral malpractice and mess seen in the last by-elections, he is issuing threats against us who are demanding free, clean and fair elections.

The credibility of ECZ will only be restored by conducting free and fair elections, devoid of malpractice as seen in the Kabushi and Kwacha by-elections, and the recent electoral violations that occurred in Mwembeshi Ward in Chimbamilonga Constituency in Northern Province.

Below is the Statement from ECZ

SOCIAL MEDIA REPORIS – MWEMBESHI, KABUTA AND SANKOLONGA WARD BY-ELECTIONS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has noted with concern serious allegations that
have been circulated on Mr Emmanuel Mwamba’s Facebook page alleging that “The
Electoral Commission of Zambia set up secret Polling Stations…” during the 1st December
2023 ward by-election for Mwembeshi Ward in Nsama District, Northern Province,
Further, the Commission has noted the malicious allegations on Mr. Raphael Nakachinda’s
Facebook page against the Commission in relation to the recent by-elections that took place in Kabuta Ward of Nchelenge District, Mwembeshi Ward of Nsama District and Sankolonga Ward of Mwandi District.

In his statement, Mr. Nakachinda alleges that the
Commission connived to abrogate the Electoral Code of Conduct in full view of alert
citizens.

The Commission takes great exception to these accusations and wishes to categorically
state that these accusations were all figments of Mr Mwamba’s and Mr. Nakachinda’s
imaginations.

Polls in the just ended by-election in Mwembeshi Ward of Nsama District were
conducted at the officially listed four (4) Polling Stations namely Nsama 1, Nsama 2, Sefya and Mulenga.

The campaigns and polls in Kabuta Ward of Nchelenge District and Sankolonga Ward of Mwandi Distict were all conducted in peaceful environments as
attested by stakeholders.

It is the Commission’s expectation that stakeholders in the electoral process conduct
themselves honourably.

The Commission takes this matter seriously and is considering further action, in this matter,
against those individuals who engage in misinformation and disinformation in order to
discredit the credibility of the Commission and the entire electoral process.

The Commission therefore would like to call upon stakeholders who are aggrieved during the electoral process to follow laid down procedures stipulated by the law and desist from making unwarranted and baseless accusations against the Commission.

Mr Edgar Lungu Must Publically Apologize For Calling Bembas Thieves

0

PRESS STATEMENT

4TH December 2023

MR EDGAR LUNGUMUST PUBLICALLY APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING BEMBAS THIEVES

Mr. Edgar Lungu, told the world that out of 10 Bembas 6 are thieves, he made this accusation in front of cameras. This means that, 60% of Bembas throughout the world are thieves. He said this without providing any empirical evidence to back up his claims. Which meant that he was just being malicious?

To label Bembas as thieves is a very demeaning accusation of the highest degree against the innocent Bembas. Mr. Lungu as a lawyer knows the implications of his accusations against the Bembas. He has put the lives of the Bembas at a risk; Bembas can longer move with their heads up. We are therefore demanding that he retracts his statement and offer a public apology to all Bembas for calling them thieves.

His statement was meant to incite other tribes and employers to rise against Bembas. As a result of that statement Bembas have lost respect in society as they are treated and regarded as thieves. His utterances have far reaching consequences on the day to day undertaking of Bembas.
Bembas have suffered irreparable damages. We therefore call upon all noble Bembas to support and defend their integrity.

This case is not about politics, but about the integrity of Bembas of today and generations to come. Bembas cannot depend on others to defend them from such malicious attacks, NO. Bembas have the capacity to defend themselves from such malicious attacks. Bembas should not be born with a tag of a thief because of Mr Lungu. Anyone who thinks is part of what Mr. Lungu said, please we ask you to keep away. You will have chance in Court to testify for Mr. Lungu that you are the thieves he was talking about.

We must also make it very clear that what Mr. Lungu said is not about cousinship or chimbuya.

There is no chimbuya when you defame someone. Mr. Lungu meant what he said just like when he gave instructions to his juniors to loot the Country through UBOMBA MWIBALA….. What followed was a free for all looting of public resources leaving the Country with a huge debt. If this matter goes unchallenged people will take it that indeed Bembas are thieves. Silence means consent.

Lessons from Kambwili’s conviction, imprisonment

THE MAST COMMENT

Lessons from Kambwili’s conviction, imprisonment

It shouldn’t have come to this for Chishimba Kambwili. His sentencing to five months imprisonment speaks volumes on where we have come from and are in terms of our political discourse. The country has not moved on that much. We don’t conduct our politics for national good or in the nation’s interests because of the lingering tribal or regional lens! But tribe and regionalism cannot be a cornerstone of our politics in the 21st century. Certainly, darkness cannot drive darkness. It’s practically impossible. Once you veer into those territories, there must be consequences.
We should all be answerable to and for our actions!

On Thursday, the Kasama Magistrate Court
sentenced Kambwili to five months imprisonment with hard labour for hate speech. This is in a case where he was charged with the offence of expressing hatred and ridicule for the people of Southern Province based on tribe and place of origin.
Commenting on the sentence, Alliance for Community Action executive director Laura Miti said Kambwili unapologetically used tribal hate as a political tool.
“His greatest crime for me was to band all the Tonga people with his political rival, HH (Hakainde Hichilema). Yoh, my insides would turn as I would imagine what it felt like to be an ordinary citizen, who happened to be Tonga, vilified for your DNA. Cast as inherently evil,” wrote Miti, a commissioner of the Human Rights Commission, on her Facebook wall. “I hope this conviction teaches us all to never try to get benefit, or harm others, simply on the basis of something no one chooses – like tribe, race or circumstances of birth. All that said, I wish Mr Kambwili well. I hope he too has had a chance to think deeply about his ways. My guess is this will go to the High Court on appeal.”

Indeed, Kambwili should reflect on his politics and all of us should learn a lesson from this conviction. None of us is perfect but we should always tame our tongues when dealing with public or national issues.
Let’s be humane, civil in our language and see the humanity in all of us despite divergent political views and otherwise. Even when in an era of scotched earth politics, we should not accept that our politics have become unacceptably uncivil! We need cool heads and polite exchange of views, even at the height of electoral campaigns.

Globally there’s been a movement to discourage and indeed criminalise hate speech because of the evils it has occasioned in society.
‘Hate crimes’ are simply crimes that are hostile and prejudiced in their manner, when targeting a person merely as a result of their disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation and transgender identity.
While we must vigorously support free speech, we should always condemn hate speech regardless the mouth expressing it.

Germany Kent guides that, “Speak with caution. Even if someone forgives harsh words you have spoken, they may be too hurt to ever forget them. Don’t leave a legacy of pain and regret of things you never should have said.”

This lesson is not only for Kambwili, it is also for other politicians, especially those in the ruling party. They may not express hate speech openly but through actions. And people are able to interpret these actions correctly. So, all our leaders, starting with the President, should use a language, actions, and expressions that unite the country. There is no need of harbouring grudges throughout and you keep complaining about the same things at every podium. Please move on and show that you are a leader for every Zambian. Otherwise, your perpetual complaints about the same things will eventually alienate other Zambians. Show leadership by breaking away from the past. Embrace the future and build on it.

You can give UPND 100 years, nothing will change – Silavwe

By Fanny Kalonda(The Mast)

GOLDEN Party of Zambia president Jackson Silavwe has accused UPND of being preoccupied with what they can siphon from state coffers to benefit their own pockets.

“You can give them 100 years and nothing will change,” he said. “Their attitude speaks louder than any speech or economic graph.”

Silavwe added that UPND lacks the moral campus to lead people out of poverty.

“A party in government that behaves like this towards it’s own state it leads can never bring economic prosperity to all the citizens. You can give them a 100 years and nothing will change,” he said in his reaction to the state awarding Lusaka UPND chairman Obvious Mwaliteta K900,000 compensation for false imprisonment. “The UPND is preoccupied with what they can siphon from the state coffers to benefit their own pockets and not harnessing the state to benefit all the Zambians.”

Silavwe said no legal justification can make what is happening right.

“This is plunder 101. Even slave trade was very legal but immoral. No amount of legal justification by Attorney General [Mulilo] Kabesha can make this right,” wrote Silavwe on his Facebook wall. “UPND lacks the moral campus to lead our people out of poverty and squalor compounded by the current high cost of living. Their attitude speaks louder than any speech or economic graph. At this rate, UPND cannot be entrusted to soberly manage our state coffers. They must be stopped.”

According to a consent judgment signed by High Court judge Charles Kafunda, the Attorney General also agreed to pay Mwaliteta and Kafue businessman James Sichomba K200,000 in legal fees.

“By consent of the parties through their respective advocates, it is hereby agreed and ordered as follows; that the defendant (AG) shall pay the plaintiffs the sum of K900,000 each as damages. That the defendant (AG) shall pay the sum of K200,000 legal fees as costs. That the above shall be full and final settlement of all the claims in this matter,” read the consent order signed on March 2, 2023

M’membe, Kambwili; birds of the same feathers

0

Dr Fred M’membe, leader of the Socialist Party, has shared some words of encouragement and kindness for recently incarcerated Chishimba Kambwili.

Taking to the Facebook page of his Socialist Party, he submitted, “Mwaice wandi Chishimba Kambwili wisakamana. Natwishiba ifilechitika napali ubwafya natupamona.” Loosely translated into English – do not worry my young brother. We know what is happening and we’ve seen where there’s a problem.

For obvious reasons, M’membe deliberately chooses to package his thoughts in Bemba. However, if you bother to comb through the said page, you’ll discover that the once Editor of an influential tabloid usually shares his thoughts in our official language – English. Why the sudden change in the choice of the language to interact with members of the public? What is the thrust of this article? Is he somehow giving tacit approval of Kambwili’s uncouth tribal ranting?

It’s absolutely immoral and unfair to try and apportion Kambwili’s latest predicament to UPND when they were not anywhere near the corridors of power when the case was initiated.

As revealed by Mulenga Thornicroft on her Facebook page, the case which has seen Kambwili jumping on a CDF Landcruiser to begin his long journey to prison was actually reported during the PF regime by three brave women – Laura Miti, Mutibo Harvey and Mulenga herself!

“Anybody who chooses to see this as a ploy by UPND to fix Kambwili is not thinking straight!” maintains Mulenga.

She further insists that Zambia is for all of us and will never allow a few individuals make any Tonga child feel like a second class citizen due to selfish political ambitions.

Considering the gravity of the offence, Kambwili is even lucky he walked away with a lesser sentence.

Anyway, we are not surprised that M’membe has come to the defence of one of his kind. As editor of The Post Newspapers, he used the publication not only to unleash scathing attacks on UPND, but equally mounted a vicious tribal campaign against the party.

In an attempt to hoodwink the right thinking members of the public that UPND did not enjoy the support of the people beyond Southern province, he constantly referred to it as a Bantustan; a deregatory reference to partially self-governing areas set aside during the period of apartheid for particular indigenous African folks.

We are not surprised that M’membe is quick to defend Kambwili and assure him of liberation in the not too distant future…..they are actually birds of the same feathers. They both share a history of stoking tribal sentiments!

No bwana Minister; Pay back the money

0

Much of last week, I remained holed up in what my Western colleagues would refer to as sticks adding meat to the skeleton of my next project – “One Zambia One Nation; How Hakainde Rejuvenated Our Motto.” When I finally got back to civilization, l found Social media trending with news of compensations by the state; particularly the one involving the Minister of Transport & Logistics Hon. Frank Tayali who has walked away with a whopping K450, 000 for the trauma he allegedly suffered when a gun was pointed at him by an overzealous cop as he escorted opposition party leader then, President Hichilema, to police headquarters for interrogations.

A number of bloggers and personalities of course weighed in and added their voices to the discourse. Of particular interest are the following views:

“I have just made an appointment to meet with my lawyers to sue the state for the 2017 unlawful detention for 7 days and 7 nights. How much should I claim? I would like to donate part of the claim to the youth,” stated UPP leader Saviour Chishimba.

Outspoken UPND Lusaka province party official, Likwanya Matomola, could not be left out at all. “I am sueing the state for torturing me and illegally detaining me 6 times when the police arrested me between 2015 & 2021. Next week on Monday I am taking legal action.”

United Kingdom based UPND member Barbra Chama who is notorious for calling a spade a spade equally shared her thoughts. I will also come and claim compensation for the trauma I suffered due to the insults I faced at the hands of Ichipani thugs…. I want 10 million!”

“Those who suffer harm must be handsomely compensated. And in return, officers who cause the State to compensate victims must be made to personally compensate the State for such conduct,” Green Party leader, Peter Sinkamba, observed.

Topson Kunda, a Central province based UPND official that suffered gushing gunshot wounds prior to the elections maintained that he won’t sue anyone but leave everything to God.

On the hand, others such as the Chilubi MP, Mulenga Fube and his Petauke Central counterpart Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda who escaped prison sentence for urinating in the mouth of a journalist and storming a police post to beat up police officers were sarcastic and less civil as expected; describing the move as nothing but looting the treasury!

I won’t waste time discussing the merits or demerits of what others have said, but would rather share my own opinion in truth and honesty.

The decision by Tayali to sue the state for compensation may be legally right, but of course morally wrong. What do we say so?

During different episodes of our liberation struggles……from British colonial rule, dark days of one party rule through to the days of MMD and the brutal PF regime, various individuals have suffered tremendous pain and anguish at the hands of the state. Have we seen any of them stepping forward to claim compensation? Is our economy solid enough to even sustain such unplanned expenses?

I’ll share a vivid personal experience. When I wrote an article, “Sata’s Family Forest Explained,” during the PF regime which detailed a clear pattern of tribalism and regionalism in the choice of those appointed to government positions, the authorities were livid! Former president Edgar Lungu was Home Affairs Minister at the time. I had never seen a person so annoyed before on national TV.

“This is treason!” He exclaimed as he banged his clenched fist on his mahogany office desk. “We know this is the work of UPND. I am now directing investigative wings of government to hunt down whoever is behind this article and bring them to book!”

During the wee hours of the following day, I tucked my passport in one of the inner pockets of my coat, secured my wallet and disappeared into the night. During the next couple of hours, I steered away from the main road as much as possible to avoid being detected. I somehow got a bit relieved when I finally got absorbed into the dense ZAFFICO plantation along the Ndol/Kitwe dual carriageway. During the next couple of days to come, I survived on wild fruits, drinking water from the puddles, dodging snakes and being feasted upon by the mosquitoes. One fateful late afternoon though, I came face to face with armed bandits who frisked me and took away my only earthly possessions – sleeping bag, phone and wallet.

After loitering about in the wilderness for the next 3 weeks, I finally found the Mokambo road where I encountered a charcoal burner. I borrowed his mobile phone and called my wife.

“No one has been here,” she assured me. “You can just come back home now.”

It has never crossed my mind that I can actually sue the state for compensation for the anguish and trauma I endured during those days and nights in the wilderness until this time. I am now contemplating finding a good lawyer to pursue this case. But are we doing the nation any good taking this route?

If my memory serves me right, Local Government Minister Hon. Gary Nkombo equally had a gun put to his head by a trigger happy cop at a fuel station in Chilanga in the presence of his dear lovely wife, Katendi. Have we seen him jumping on skates to demand compensation? Of course, not!

What about the Lamba bull, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo, another poor victim of imprisonment on tramped up charges before the elections; have we seen him laughing all the way to the Bank?

No no no….. Hon. Minister…… surrender that money back to government or better still, donate it to charity otherwise you are setting a very bad precedence. Very soon you’ll see every everyone of us dashing to court for compensation.

Besides, the president has already rewarded you with a lofty position as Minister for your contributions to the struggle which is a lifetime achievement in itself. It may be understandable for someone not serving in government such as Obvious Mwaliteta to sue for compensation, but not a Minister for God’s sake!

SELF- DECEPTION: HICHILEMA AND THE UPND BEYOND 2026- Fred M’membe

SELF- DECEPTION: HICHILEMA AND THE UPND BEYOND 2026

Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his corrupt puppet regime must stop deceiving themselves that they still have a chance to remain in power beyond 2026 despite their disastrous performance.

These lies and misinformation they’re spreading amongst themselves and their gullible friends and followers that there is no strong opposition to dislodge them from power, and that they will continue until they are tired is nothing but sheer arrogance and ignorance.

It is very easy to see that these are sentiments or claims of delusional, irrational, and ignorant people who have no clue whatsoever about the political history of this country.

Clearly, the UPND lacks the political depth to grasp or discern what is happening on the ground and how it is affecting its continued existence as a governing party.

But we are not surprised at all because, as a political organization, the UPND does not see beyond its leader; it has always been about their leader’s interests and not the people. The cult of personality in the UPND has always been very strong. This trait is even more pronounced now when they’re in government than when they were in opposition.

In their view, the UPND leadership and supporters are convinced that they will mistreat Zambians in anyway they can; loot the treasury; destroy the economy and public institutions; and create a one-party state because their hold on state power is guaranteed since in their own words “there is no strong opposition” to dislodge them. What a misguided notion?

But like we have stated this argument is totally misplaced and lacks depth, research and understanding, and here is how it fails on all fronts; the UPND must know that the strongest opposition in Zambia has not emerged from an opposition party in our history. Real opposition in this country has always emerged from the suffering masses of our people.

For instance, the MMD was formed July 1990 and registered as a political party in December 1990, after opposition to the then governing party, UNIP’s dominance on state power and economic troubles grew amongst the population. Within a space of 15 months after its inception, multi-party presidential and parliamentary elections were conducted on October 31, 1991, and the MMD swept into power in a landslide victory. Frederick Chiluba polled 76 per cent of the vote against Kenneth Kaunda’s 24 per cent.

Further, the MMD scooped 125 of the 150 elected parliamentary seats in the National Assembly at that time. This is how MMD, a 15 months old political party, ousted UNIP and ended Kaunda’s 27-year rule and remained dominant in Zambia’s politics until September 2011.

And so the UPND must not use their 23-year long stay in opposition politics as a benchmark or guiding principle of assuming power in this country. No, it does not have to always be that way for everybody. In fact, both the MMD and the PF’s rise to power proved that real opposition lies in the hands of the people.

MMD formed government within 15 months of its formation, and PF formed government within 10 years of its formation whilst the UPND that was formed much earlier than the PF was still struggling to get into government.

So Mr Hichilema and the UPND must not deceive themselves that there is no strong opposition in Zambia because the strongest opposition they have today are the suffering and hungry majority of our people. And already, the people are fed up and banding together against corruption, injustice, and oppression.

It is no longer in doubt that Mr Hichilema’s corrupt puppet regime is unhinged and enormously reckless by all leadership standards. It is also undeniable that Mr Hichilema is untested, paranoid, and a hyper-sensitive and speculative individual who has been confronted with the reality of governance quicker than he thought.

The lack of self limitation and modesty, inferiority complex, ethnic bigotry, uncontrollable ego or pride, failure to comprehend the limitations and consequences of power and so on and so forth, all signify Mr Hichilema’s bad and ill-preparation for leadership at that level and justify why he must not stay in office beyond 2026.

Sadly for them, they don’t realise that whatever they’re doing each day that passes is diving this nation, galvanising the public against them and entangling them further into the web of deceit and self-destruction

The self-deception amongst them is visible. The leadership misjudgments and criminal connivance to harm selected citizens and destroy our nation are also very visible.

But they’re blinded by power and ill-gotten wealth, and can’t see that their time is up. The people have realised the mistake they made in voting them in and can’t wait to correct it.

Let them deceive themselves. They will learn the hard way. It will end in disgrace!

We Ask You Not To Extradite Apollinaire Nsengiyumva Into The Clutches Of The Killers, Rwandan Refugees Begs President Hichilema

0

To His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia in Lusaka.

Subject: Alarm bell.

Your Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia

The International Civil Society of Rwandan Refugees (SOCIR) has just learned with regret and dismay of the arrest, on 1st December 2023, of Mr Apollinaire Nsengiyumva, a refugee and resident in Zambia since 2009, an act that can only be described as inhuman because it is based on false accusations fabricated by the government of the RPF tyrants in Kigali, which continues to traumatise Rwandan refugees around the world.

Mr Appolinaire Nsengiyumva is renowned for his humanitarianism, having been responsible for Rwandan refugees on Congolese soil at Runingo in South Kivu in the DRC for some time, helping them in accordance with international human rights standards governing refugees.

Knowing that the Kigali regime, as Human Right Watch (HRW) has rightly said in its report published on 09 October 2023, that Kigali’s policy is based on terror called “Accept to serve me or you will be killed”. It is obvious that he cannot tolerate a man like Mr Appolinaire who is honest, humble, truthful and impartial.

Your Excellency, Mr President of the Republic of Zambia, we ask you not to extradite the person concerned into the clutches of the killers, but rather to seek out all the necessary information for this gentleman, if possible to try him on the spot, since he cannot find independent justice in Kigali.

Otherwise, you run the risk of falling into Kigali’s trap, of being complicit in the mistreatment of innocent people. We believe that the example of Paul RUSESABAGINA should serve as a lesson to the various governments of the world, to humanitarian agencies and to human rights organisations, that no one could be lured again by the tricks of the leaders of Kigali.

In addition, we are also sounding the alarm to the international community, the great powers of this world, SADEC, non-governmental organisations and human rights organisations to intervene as soon as possible so that this gentleman can be saved before it is too late.

Remember that in Malawi a certain Mr Kanyoni was extradited on the fabricated identity of another criminal, but his fate remains unknown to this day. No doubt he is in Kigali’s torture surgery.

In Mozambique a certain Revocate Karemangingo was assassinated without any follow -up and a certain Cassien Ntamuhanga was kidnapped by Kigali in Mozambique and would be savagely killed in Kigali like his three little brothers, in RSA a certain Gen Nyamwasa was shot until now without any follow-up of this assassination attempt which occurred after the assassination of Col Kalegeya in the same country, etc.. What is being done in Rwanda is beyond comprehension.

When will these barbaric acts committed by the Kigali regime under the complacent eyes of world leaders in places of refuge and in Rwanda come to an end?

Rwandese linked to Edgar Lungu is member of IDC procurement committee

0

21st July 2020

A NEWS Diggers! investigation has revealed that the Rwandese national called Nsengiyumva Appolinaire, who was named by that country’s rebel leader Maj Nsabimana Sankara Calliixte in a court testimony as his link to President Edgar Lungu, is actually a member of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) procurement committee in Zambia.

And Appolinaire has told News Diggers! that he has heard about the allegations levelled against him, but declined to explain his links to the rebel movement in Rwanda and his association with President Lungu, saying he was not in a position to talk about the issue because he had been unwell for the past seven months.

President Lungu has vehemently refuted media reports linking him to terrorist financing in Rwanda.

Rwandese rebel leader Maj Sankara, who faces 17 charges including Terrorism and murder in Rwanda, told that country’s High Court for International and cross-border crimes that his group, National Liberation Force (FLN) received money from the Zambian President to launch attacks against that country’s current regime.

“Early 2019 before I was arrested, One Nsengiyumva Appolinaire a leader of PDR, one of the many political parties that form MRCD travelled to Zambia to meet Lungu to discuss how he would offer them more support,” Maj Sankara told the court, Monday, claiming they received US$150, 000 towards the cause.

On Friday last week, upon returning from Kigali where he met President Paul Kagame as President Lungu’s special envoy on diplomatic engagements around the issue, Foreign Affairs Minister Joe Malanji said the allegations bordered on national security, and as such government would launch investigations to establish how the rebel leader could link President Lungu to his terrorist activities.

“I should clear our position over the self proclaimed Calliixte Nsabimana. These allegations are coming from a convict. I had a lengthy meeting with President Paul Kagame [of Rwanda] as a special envoy of the President of the Republic of Zambia, and the government of Rwanda and President Paul Kagame was very categorical that this convict had been to five countries prior to his arrest and Zambia was not one of them. He was very categorical about this,” said Malanji.

“We are going to dig [into this]. Diplomatically, we are going to engage Rwanda to make sure we find the reason and who could have enticed this convict to bring the name of the President of Zambia and the country into disrepute. We are following this up, soon officers will be going to Rwanda to make sure that we dig and find out why he had to bring in the name of Zambia and the name of President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu. We want to get to the bottom of everything. When we are doing an investigation, we can’t leave it in suspense. Even you as a citizen you should know that these are matters bordering on national security and we shouldn’t trivialize anything. So we want to get to the bottom of this.”

But according to an investigation, Appolinaire was appointed to the IDC procurement committee in 2015 and re-appointed in 2018, both times under President Lungu’s reign as chairman of the IDC board.

Responding to a press query sent by News Diggers, Thursday, IDC confirmed that Appolinaire was a procurement committee member of the country’s parent company of government owned enterprises.

“Mr. Nsengiyumva Appolinaire, a procurement specialist, is one of the external members of the IDC Procurement Committee. He was first appointed in 2015 by the then Chief Executive Officer in accordance with the PPA of 2008 Section 13(2)(a) and Section 17(1). He was re-appointed in 2018, in accordance with the PPA of 2008. He holds no other position at the IDC,” read the response.

Asked who appoints procurement committee members, the IDC said it was the responsibility of the the Chief Executive.

“Members of the IDC Procurement Committee are appointed by the Group Chief Executive Officer in his capacity as Controlling Officer, as stipulated in the Public Procurement Act (PPA) of 2008. The IDC Board of Directors does not participate in the appointment of the Procurement Committee or any other matters related to IDC as a procuring entity, as these are handled in accordance with the PPA,” the response read.

Asked to explain the role of the IDC procurement committee, IDC said it was to preside over all transactions relating to procurement, but declined to list the key procurement transactions that had been approved since 2015.

“The role of the Committee is to preside over all transactions and processes relating to procurements undertaken by the corporation in line with the PPA as well as the Public Procurement Regulations (PPR) of 2011.”

IDC also did not respond to the question seeking to establish the status of Appolinaire’s nationality.

Sources within the Rwandese Community living in Zambia told News diggers that Appolinaire is one of the established Rwandese nationals conducting businesses in the townships where he owns some grocery shops.

When contacted, Monday, Appolinaire confirmed being the person named in the Maj Sankara court trial, but said he had been unwell since January when he suffered a stroke.

“I have been very sick from January. I had a stroke, so I am not yet functional. Maybe at a later stage, I don’t know when I will be doing my test again by the end of next month to see if I am available to start work again, then we can communicate later,” he said.

When informed that the aim of the interview was to help him clear his name following allegations that came from a court case in which he was implicated in Rwanda, Appolinaire insisted that he was unwell and not in a position to comment further on the matter.

“But sir, for the past seven months I have been down. I heard those things, people came to visit me, but I don’t even watch TV, I don’t follow the news, but once I am fine, we will talk later when I am in position to talk. I am not… I am heard those, but I am not able to read again so it’s a difficult situation for me,” said Appolinaire.

Asked “what is your relationship with the President of Zambia, are you close?” Appolinaire cut the line and became unresponsive thereafter. -NEWS Diggers

Rwanda: Rebel Leader Sankara Tells Court His Group Was Facilitated by President Edgar Lungu to Launch Attacks in Rwanda

Rwanda: Rebel Leader Sankara Tells Court His Group Was Facilitated by Zambian President to Launch Attacks in Rwanda

Chimp Corps, July 14 2020 1 minute read
Sankara (L) and his lawyer in court in Kigali

Maj.Nsabimana Sankara Calliixte has Monday told Rwanda’s High Court for International and cross-border crimes that his group National Liberation Force(FLN) received US dollars 150,000 from Zambian President Edgar Lungu to launch attacks in Rwanda.

Maj Sankara who faces 17 charges including Terrorism and murder was appearing before court for hearing a case in which some of the victims of the rebel groups attack were seeking compensation for the suffering inflicted on them by the attacks.

Before the case commenced, Maj Sakara reportedly requested to be allowed to tell court about a funding his group got form one of the Presidents of country he didn’t want to mention.

The presiding judge granted him the opportunity and asked him to name the country and the president since so that those seeking compensation also get to know.

He said towards the end of 2017, Zambian President Edgar Lungu agreed to support opposition politician and leader of MRCD the political wing of FLN Paul Rusesabagina to topple President Kagame and immediately offered $ 150,000 for the cause.

President Lungu was in Rwanda for two-day state visit in February 2018.

“Early 2019 before I was arrested One Nsengiyumva Appolinaire a leader of PDR one the many political parties that form MRCD travelled to Zambia to meet Lungu to discuss how he would offer them more support,” Maj Sankara told court.

He emphasized that it was the money given to them by Lungu that was used to launch the initial attacks in Rwanda noting that they couldn’t have started the war without Lungu’s support.

Nsabimana’s claims could stoke diplomatic tensions between Rwanda and Zambia. He did not provide evidence to back up his claims.

The timing of the revelations has raised eyebrows considering that Nsabimana previously told court that Ugandan army officers including Chief of Military Intelligence, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho supported his rebel movement, another claim he didn’t substantiate.

Zambia is home to hundreds of wealthy Hutu refugees, many of whom are opposed to the reign of President Paul Kagame.

Most of these refugees left Rwanda when Kagame took power in 1994. Lungu previously served as Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister.

During the M23 conflict in eastern DRC, Lungu supported regional efforts including formation of a joint force to fight the M23 rebels who were linked to Rwanda.

Zambia shares an estimated 1,900 kilometer border with DRC where Hutu militants seeking to topple Kagame are based.

Statement By Leader Of Opposition In Parliament Hon. Robert Chabinga In Response To Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s Friday Press Briefing

0

STATEMENT BY LEADER OF OPPOSITION IN PARLIAMENT HON. ROBERT CHABINGA IN RESPONSE TO FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU’S FRIDAY PRESS BRIEFING.

O3.12.2023

Let me first of all pay tribute to the young people of this country for their determination to secure their future amidst serious economic and social challenges.

These challenges though serious, are not insurmountable.
I commiserate with the bereaved families of the young people that tragically perished when the earth at Senseli mine at KCM in Chingola collapsed on them.

I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. May the souls of our young men rest in peace.

The ascendency of the Patriotic Front (PF), the former ruling party during the 2011 General elections ignited optimism of accountability and transparency in the running of the affairs of both the party and country.

However let me be quick to indicate that in subsequent, years during the reign of President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu or ECL, both the party and country became shadows of themselves.

As they say, ‘ONLY A BAD FARMER CAN DESTROY A GOOD FARM.’ Listening to President Lungu’s lamentations during last Friday’s news conference demonizing state institutions which he was in charge of two years ago is beyond comprehension .

Simply put, l am at loss for words. However, allow me to highlight some of the misguided statements issued by the Former Head of State. As a democrat, President Lungu should realize that President Miles Sampa is the legitimate leader of the country’s biggest opposition party, as he is duly recognized by the national statutes in conforminty with the supreme laws of the land.

President Lungu by virtue of him failing to handover power at party level by perpetually holding on following his disastrous performance in 2021 general elections, is a clear case of political intrigue, blackmail and manipulation.

Mr. Lungu should at least show remorse for holding a thriving political party to ransom even when more than nine candidates had presented themselves for leadership by paying the nomination fee of two hundred thousand kwacha.

This was a statement that the PF is not and will never be short of leaders. Have we run short of leaders in this country sure? Why is our former president still thinking he can still come back? why, why, why? If those claiming President Lungu is popular and sellable why not just form their own political party?

It is also disheartening to hear the Former Head of State propagating unorthodox means of reclaiming power, which should clearly become a subject of interest for law enforcement agencies.

And my appeal to the law enforcement agencies is to apply the law fairly unlike heeding to empty threats from the aggrieved party headed by President Lungu. Consequently, even in his speeches, President Lungu should show remorse, magnanimity and gratitude due to the respect and treatment he has been accorded by the new dawn administration under President Hakainde Hichilema.

President Hichilema has demonstrated utmost love to his predecessor amidst heightened provocation. Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND are not to blame for the problems in the PF, but those who went to shed crocodile tears at the memorial of late president Michael Sata.

Sadly, for me, as leader of the opposition in Parliament, and President Sampa, the only crime we have committed to President Lungu is salvaging the party from political minions, charlatans and vultures that have been misleading him since his exit from power.

President Lungu deserves to rest rather than parade himself and issuing misguided, uncoordinated statements and pure comedy, as was the case last Friday.

Last but not the least, I’m advising my fellow Honourable Members of Parliament from the opposition PF that we need to accept reality and understand that leadership in the National Assembly has changed.

So discipline and decorum in the house have to be adhered to. We need to be non-political in the house and perform according to the wishes of the people that elected us. We must effectively represent them.

Let us offer constructive checks and balances in the house. That should be our core business.

I am the only leader of the opposition and Kantanshi MP Hon. Anthony Mumba is the Whip of the PF. So let us work as a team and not antagonise each other.

As a Friend of the media, allow me to wish you compliments of the season.

“ECZ’S CURRENT CONDUCT IS A RECIPE FOR POLITICAL TURMOIL AHEAD OF 2026”- Raphael Nakacinda

“ECZ’S CURRENT CONDUCT IS A RECIPE FOR POLITICAL TURMOIL AHEAD OF 2026.”

3rd December, 2026.

We in the Patriotic Front would like to sincerely congratulate the winners in the just ended by-elections. In particular we thank our candidate and the entire campaign team and the entire leadership for the hard work in scooping the by-election in Kabuta Ward of Nchelenge Town Council in Luapula Province, amidst heightened provocation and underhand schemes by the UPND aimed at rigging. I convey congratulatory words on behalf of our party President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu and we encourage all party structures to take a queue from this as we have been instructed to begin a rigorous mobilisation programs country wide.

Much as the UPND may have been declared temporal winners in the polls in – Mwembeshi Ward of Nsama Town Council in Northern Province and Sankolonga Ward of Mwandi Town Council in Western Province. We want to warn them to desist from engaging in undemocratic schemes aimed at undermining the democratic history of our country through manipulation, corruption, vote buying and ferrying of voters. Using money and farming inputs to woo voters only works temporarily but it sutely only blinds those in leadership against the true realities on the ground. It is better to lose honorably than celebrate a fake win because it will open your eyes. From the video evidence which surfaced on social media platforms implicating both the UPND and ECZ in heinous acts aimed at rigging the election in favor of UPND, is cause enough to nullify the Mwembeshi Ward by-election.

Both the ECZ and UPND connived to abrogate the electoral code of conduct in full view of alert citizens.

We have received numerous reports of widespread intimidation by the UPND. Unfortunately, the ECZ which was supposed to be a neutral referee, was found wanting in playing accomplice to the UPND manouvres beginning with the nominations.

We want to sound a stern warning to the current leadership at ECZ, that this conduct we are witnessing has persisted since the UPND took over government, therefore we want to call upon the donor community on whose funds elections are conducted to take keen interest with what is happening in Zambia because this has the potential to rob us the peace we have enjoyed since independence. We have already declared that the current leadership at ECZ is compromised and unfit to conduct a free and fair election in this country. Until the cadres are weeded out, as a party we will wage a vicous campaign against them in order that the entire ECZ leadership is disbanded ahead of the 2026 general elections. ECZ must know that they do not operate in a vacuum, but they are called to work within the agreed framework at both international and regional standards of practice. Therefore, as a crucial stakeholder we shall not stand by and watch ECZ being reduced to a branch of UPND as we witnessed in KABUSHI and KWACHA by-elections. ECZ has been a critical independent institution that has remarkably harnessed our democracy in the past, thereby delivering peaceful power transitions unique for our region. This has been due to the high level of professionalism, independence, and credibility that has been associated with the ECZ. This has earned it international accolades and is a shinning example, however the current leadership has the potential to cost us our nations’ peace. They have time without number blatantly carried out partisan instructions without recourse to the law. Unfortunately, the appointment by Mr Hakainde Hichilema of known numerous bonafide cadres of the UPND to the management of ECZ, has brought not only cadresism but partisan interests which if not tamed in good time will result in a regrettable catastrophic political turmoil in this country.

We want to thank the people in the various wards for exercising maximum restraint. These elections were marred with violence occasioned by the UPND in both Nsama and Nchelenge brought in through the Minister of Youth and Sport Elvis Nkandu and other ministers who were captured in the acts. The UPND has continued to use voilence and intimidation to manipulate elections in full view of the ECZ that made no decent effort to reprimand or suspend them from participating in the elections as prescribed in the code of conduct.

We invite and make a clarion call on the international community, church motherbodies, Law Association of Zambia and civil society organisations to take keen interest in the conduct of the ECZ by observing these by-elections. It is from this that we can gauge the credibility and readiness of ECZ to guarantee civil peace before, during and after the elections in 2026.

ECL, IF MPS WANT TO LIFT YOUR IMMUNITY , WAIT FOR THEM DONT REMIND THEM .

By Mark Simuuwe

I saw a statement by ECL on lifting of immunity. If I were an MP , he does not even need to wonder about it , it would be the first thing I would lift ; the man was heartless to say the list .

Citizens died at his time , Zambia got highly indebted, and our economy got damaged and mending it is a process. Today he can turn round with hypocrisy thinking people have forgotten?

He is seeking sympathy , has he forgotten that he caged his friend for 127 days yet he is walking and even jogging ?

He could not even allow press conferences in many cases which he is enjoying today .

Has he forgotten the live ammunitions in sesheke on his friends ?

Has he forgotten he arrested his friend about 15 times for no offence ?

Has he forgotten the thousands of citizens whom he fired for coming from other regions and divided the country on ethnic grounds, promoted tribal politics and closed media houses ?

He caged whoever opposed him and was unforgiving . He is calling for trouble on himself after many people in government have opted to ignore his behavior .

In fact , lifting his immunity is long overdue if I had a choice !! He should not dare citizens after causing so much pain . The high unemployment we are no addressing is because of his blind leadership which imposed an employment freeze .

The salary increases for civil servants were frozen ; he refused to pay farmers , intimidated foreign investors .

Destroyed KCM through liquidation , abused state vehicles and used them for campaigns by removing number plates with his PF members .

Your time is gone!! Wait for parliament to debate your immunity lifting if the MPs so wish .

Your public behavior and arrogance speak volumes on the manner you ran a tyrannical government.

The media was damaged and you went and even ensured laws to kill democracy were passed like Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Law .

You even aimed at amending the constitution to completely destroy our democracy through BIll 10; today you want to pretend to love our democracy?

You wanted to pass a law to kill the media completely – do you think we have forgotten?

Instead of enhancing the Public Order act , you aimed to use it to kill democracy.

We will not forget your bad leadership sir ; don’t cry when your accomplices are being caged . You said they can’t arrest you because you are innocent!

Why is Cornelius destroying his political career this way?

0

THE MAST COMMENT

Why is Cornelius destroying his political career this way?

According to Benjamin Disraeli, in politics nothing is contemptible.

If there is one government position that destroys people’s political careers, it is that of Chief Government Spokesperson and Minister of Information. When one takes a closer look at Zambia’s political history, one thing becomes evident: that successive republican presidents have tended to fill this position with individuals who go out of their way to cover the failings of their appointing authority, to defend the indefensible, to lie with a straight face. This explains why individuals who have held the position of minister of information have generally never commanded much respect from most Zambians. Even those who, prior to assuming the position, showed some semblance of level-headedness seem to lose it when they become chief government spokesperson. It is as if the position of minister of information is the one to which incumbent presidents send those whom they see as their potential successors for self-destruction. What we do not know is whether the affected individuals self-destruct consciously or do so blindly and without much regard to the long-term consequences of their antics on their political careers.

Before his appointment as Minister of Information and Media, and Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa was a very sensible person.

His positions on many issues were mature, sound, and, some would say, even inspiring. We have followed Cornelius’ public career from his student days at the University of Zambia where he served as president of the University of Zambia Students Union. Anyone who is familiar with his stint as UNZASU president would confirm that he was a very good and effective student leader who hardly told lies nor defended the indefensible. Even when he later assumed the roles of UPND deputy spokesperson (that is, before Charles Kakoma defected to the PF), member of parliament for Choma Central, UPND spokesperson or Southern Province minister, Cornelius continued to display decency and respect for public interest.

Until recently, Cornelius was not someone who was greatly despised by much of the public. He was generally seen by many people as his own person, one who had no reason to feed the public with lies or irrational defences of anyone in government. But ever since he assumed the role of Minister of Information and Media, the affection that a great number of Zambians had towards Cornelius is slowly disappearing and being replaced with a sense of disappointment. And it is easy to understand why. Cornelius, the Minister of Information and Media, is no longer the level-headed Cornelius we knew as UNZASU president, UPND spokesperson, Choma MP, or provincial minister. That old Cornelius, a man who showed complete disdain for telling lies and whom some began to see as a potential leader of this country, is dying right before our very eyes. His political obituary is writing itself. Today, there is a new Cornelius; a Cornelius that appears to be unashamed to defend the indefensible, to say the most unreasonable of things – to take leave from his senses and spit over his previously progressive record, all to appease his appointing authority. Listening to Cornelius nowadays is a pain. It is as if he is on a suicide mission to destroy his public image.

Let us take a few examples from his most recent press conferences. In response to growing public calls for President Hakainde Hichilema to release his assets, Cornelius says there is no legal requirement for the President to do so adding that: “Any attempt by a sitting president to do things that are not provided for by the law presents an existential threat to a possibility of deviating away from the trajectory of providing leadership anchored on the rule of law. The President of the Republic Zambia therefore wishes to indicate his desire to live by the law. Any call that a particular office of president should declare their assets annually should be made by the citizens to their lawmakers”.

This reasoning is absurd in several ways. First, President Hakainde Hichilema was elected on a ticket of transparency and accountability. How can promoting transparency and leading by example pose an existential threat to the rule of law? Second, and as the US Ambassador Michael Gonzales has said, “Leadership is not about only doing the bare minimum required by law, but about going beyond and doing what is right and needed to lead and shape reforms.”

Third, and as Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa noted, “Instead of joining those singing the song that says there is no law that requires President Hichilema to declare his assets, why has the executive branch of government failed to enact such a law over the last two years if at all it was committed to the fight against corruption?”

Fourth, why is Cornelius turning the issue of asset publication into a government affair when it is not?

The matter at hand relates to the President. Cornelius, the last time we checked, is not a spokesperson for the President. He is a mouthpiece for the government. At the very least, President Hichilema should have sent Clayson Hamasaka to defend the indefensible.

Why is Cornelius destroying his political career this way? What has gotten to his head such that he is now irritating Zambians who held him in high esteem? Does Cornelius know that he has veered off his rationality? If he doesn’t know, we are putting it to him that he is no longer the rational Cornelius Zambians used to know. He has now become a noise cymbal with no melody, a chatterbox. In all instances, he seems to enjoy listening to himself more than communicating sense to the nation.

At the same press conference, Cornelius also justified the hefty compensations being dished out to UPND members for false imprisonment, police arrests or detentions, and all sorts of reasons by the Attorney General on grounds that had such matters gone to trial, the State would have forked out more money in compensation. There are several problems with this thinking. The first is that of hypocrisy. If arresting and detaining people without taking them to court is wrong, why is the UPND administration doing to members of the opposition what the PF did to its members? How many times has this administration arrested and detained, several times, opposition Patriots for Economic Progress leader Sean Tembo without taking him to court? Second, how come it is only UPND members who are being compensated? If UNIP and PF members who were arrested by the MMD in the 1990s and early 2000s come forward to make similar claims, would the government require them to prove their cases at trial or would they too be given hefty compensation through consent orders? Third, how does the UPND justify compensation to someone who was released on a nolle prosequi, which means the freed can be rearrested if fresh evidence is found? Mumbi Phiri was kept in prison for over a year before she was released on a nolle prosequi. Is Cornelius telling us that if she sued the State today, she would be compensated without trial? Civil rights activist Brebner Changala has been arrested several times and released on a nolle. Is Cornelius telling us that if he sued the State today, he would be compensated without trial? Also, what gives Cornelius the confidence to conclude that all these matters where UPND members are receiving hefty amounts of money for alleged offences against them during the PF’s rule would automatically result in victories for the suing party and losses for the State if they are subjected to trial?

There are several examples we can cite to show the differences between the Cornelius of before – the mature, reasonable, and even trusted leader – and the Cornelius of after – the one who defends the indefensible. The one who justifies wrongs and thinks the public are stupid and can easily be misled with a straight face. Again, we ask: why is Cornelius destroying his political career this way?

Mario Vargas Llosa explained it this way, “My three years in politics was very instructive about the way in which the appetite for political power can destroy a human mind, destroy principles and values, and transform people into little monsters.”

Just when people thought Cornelius was presidential material, he has proven them wrong. He has shown them he is, after all, a turncoat just like any other common Zambian politician. This is the level Cornelius has reduced himself to. Again, why is he wasting a young and promising leadership?

FOUR KINDS OF POLITICIANS- Dr Fred Mutesa

0

FOUR KINDS OF POLITICIANS

By Dr Fred Mutesa

1. OPPORTUNISTS – very common species. They are very good at reading opportunities. Ngati vapwalala, they will quickly jump in and fill the void. Because they are driven by self-interest, they can’t spearhead national development. If any progress is registered during their tenure it is a mere coincidence that is instrumental to achieving their own goals.

2. REALISTS- this type is driven by an ideology that says, “that’s just how things are.” They believe society functions according to a certain logic which defines human behaviour. They believe the rational thing to do is to flow with the tide. Like the opportunists, the realist is often driven by self-interest. Any development posted under the rule of realists is subject to existence of “favourable circumstances.” They will do very little to remove structural and systemic barriers, because that is just how things are

3. NAIVE IDEALISTS- driven by lofty ideals, but with a very minimal understanding of how to overcome systemic and structural barriers that hinder development. They are often driven by either religious or ideological convictions. In office, naive idealists will strive to implement their utopia, but are often sabotaged by vested interests.

4. PATRIOTS- A very rare species, often combining love of country with passion to undo inequalities and injustices that shackle society from advancing to its full potential. What distinguishes a patriot from a mere naive idealist, is their willingness to sacrifice their personal comfort for the common good. Many patriots lose their lives in the line of duty because they are perceived as a threat to entrenched interests that feed-off the poverty of the masses.

CONCLUSION -all the four categories referred to above are ideal types. In practice, many politicians exhibit a combination of more than one trait, with varying degrees of emphasis. Metamorphosis is also possible, where one starts off with a particular dominant trait, and along the way acquires other characteristics. Unfortunately, the transition is mostly regressive. Of the four, opportunists and realists, tend to be the most harmful to the agenda of nation-building and development. They will stoop to any low to satisfy their ambitions, even the most despicable acts of wickedness.

TRANSPARENCY AND OPTIMISM SURROUNDING MOPANI COPPER MINES’ STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP- Dr Mwelwa

TRANSPARENCY AND OPTIMISM SURROUNDING MOPANI COPPER MINES’ STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

By Dr Mwelwa

The recent selection of International Resources Holding Limited as a strategic partner for Zambia’s Mopani Copper Mines has brought both optimism and skepticism to the table.

While it presents an opportunity for economic growth and stability, concerns regarding transparency and potential conflicts of interest have been raised.

One crucial question that needs to be addressed is whether the government is willing to publish the agreements reached with the strategic partner.

Transparency is vital in ensuring that the terms of the partnership are fair and equitable for all parties involved.

Allegations have surfaced, claiming that some government officials may be benefitting from the deal through proxies and undisclosed shares.

By making the agreements public, the government can dispel any doubts and maintain its commitment to transparency and accountability.

In addition to transparency, another pressing issue is the need to ensure that the new partner pays their fair share of taxes without engaging in any form of tax evasion.

The concerns raised by the Tax Justice Network regarding transfer pricing and potential tax avoidance must be taken into consideration.

It is incumbent upon the government to establish stringent regulations and monitoring mechanisms to prevent any illicit financial activities and safeguard the nation’s revenue.

Furthermore, there is a need to address the allegation that government officials are involved in the deal through proxies.

If true, this would present a serious conflict of interest and undermine the integrity of the partnership. It is imperative that the government conducts thorough investigations to ascertain the veracity of these claims and takes appropriate action if any wrongdoing is found.

Such actions would demonstrate the government’s commitment to good governance and its determination to put the interests of the Zambian people first.

However, even with these concerns, it is important to recognize the potential positive impact that this partnership can have on the economy and the community of Mufulira.

With proper oversight, effective governance, and transparent practices, the strategic partnership can lead to increased copper production, job creation, and economic development.

It is crucial that both the government and the strategic partner work together to address the skepticism and ensure that the benefits of the partnership are realized by all Zambians.

In conclusion, while the selection of a strategic partner for Mopani Copper Mines holds promise, it is imperative that transparency and accountability prevail.

The government should be willing to publish the agreements reached, addressing allegations of proxy involvement and ensuring that the public has access to the necessary information.

By doing so, the government can alleviate doubts, foster trust, and demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of the Zambian people.

With the right measures in place, this partnership has the potential to bring about positive change and contribute to the country’s sustainable development.

SEEKING ANSWERS: ACCOUNTABILITY IN ZAMBIA’S GASSING SAGA

04-12-2023

Zambia’s recent history has been shrouded in a convoluted narrative, a tale woven with elements of
evasive justice, political intricacies, and a labyrinth of unanswered questions.

The exoneration of a former presidential advisor Dr Zimba and other implicated individuals, accused in the tragic loss of over 50 lives due to alleged gassing incidents, lays bare the unsettling shadows haunting the nation’s collective conscience.

The nation bore witness to a saga echoing through its political corridors, leaving citizens perplexed and disheartened.

The arrest of the ex-political advisor, purportedly tied to the chaotic gas attacks, carried the weight of governmental assertions and vows of retribution.

However, the passage of time and legal procedures unfurled a different narrative, casting doubt on the
allegations against the once-incarcerated political figure.

With the acquittal of Dr Zumani Zimba and others accused, a glaring void in accountability emerges, prompting the pressing question: who is genuinely accountable for the tragic gassing incidents that claimed innocent Zambian lives?

The imperative need for truth resonates strongly among the Zambian populace.

The government, swift in leveling accusations, now stands on the brink of accountability.

The same authority that implicated Dr. Zumani Zimba in these serious acts must step into the realm of truth.

Zambian citizens, grappling with the aftermath of these harrowing events, demand more than superficial political statements or attempts to placate public sentiment.

They clamor for transparency, accountability, and the unmasking of those responsible for these grave state crimes.

Moreover, the revelation that over 50 lives were lost during the gassing episodes demands more than mere acknowledgment.

Families shattered by irreparable loss seek not only closure but rightful justice.

Hence, the question arises: will the Zambian Attorney General heed the calls for reparation, ensuring that those affected find solace within a justice system that upholds fairness and sanctity? Compensation for the bereaved families, if proven, is a necessity.

Restoring faith in governance and the rule of law necessitates truth, closure, and accountability.

Hence, I advocate for an immediate commission of inquiry into this transgression against the Zambian people.

Politicians must not merely play to the gallery; the truth regarding the matter, including the names and burial details of the deceased, must be unveiled through this inquiry.

Furthermore, unveiling the names of the victims symbolizes acknowledgment, honoring their memory and reaffirming the pledge to never forget.

It should serve as a significant stride towards healing the wounds inflicted on the nation and commemorating those who were tragically taken.

WE MUST ALL CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS PEACE AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

By Veteran politician Dr Vernon J. Mwaanga

DECEMBER, 3, 2023….Lusaka

We fought very hard to get rid of colonialism. We worked very hard to ensure that “one Zambia, one Nation”, remained our national motto. We have mantained good neighbouriness with all the eight countries around us, since our independence in October, 1964. We have invested a lot in peaceful and democratic governance. We have travelled on bumpy and treacherous paths before and emerged resilient.

It is disgusting that we have passed through phases of intolerance, abusive language and even violence. Peace does not come by accident. It has to be worked for by well meaning citizens who love their country. Political violence shows its ugly head when irresponsible politicians start inciting people by their failure to discipline their tongues. Some of them appear to think that they get noticed when they use foul language against their opponents. Our new generation of politicians is failing to understand and recognise the value of dialogue. Our politicians have opted to talk at each other, but not to each other.

My generation recognised the value of dialogue and working with all political parties, set up the Center for Inter-Party Dialogue. The Center was intended to offer all political parties an equal opportunity to raise matters of concern or interest, which were then to be freely discussed behind closed doors. In any free and diverse political environment, difference of opinion is inevitable. Respect for each others opinions is vital. Experience has shown over the years, that civil discourse usually leads to finding common ground, which then produces compromises. All people have a right to hold opinions. Some of these opinions may be outrageous, but we should respectfully disagree with them, after listening to them attentively. You don’t have to prove yourself right all the time. No human being is right all the time. There is no need to be aggressive or rude when we present our opinions. There are times when with civility, we shall agree to disagree. Disagreeing with someone or certain things, doesn’t have to be unpleasant or acrimonious and factually based. It is one way of respecting differences. These differences exist intra-party and Inter-party. They should not lead to violence.

We should all invest in peace. We should not allow our country to get back to the dark days of pangas, machetes and other unwholesome instruments of violence. All political parties must commit themselves to non-violence and make sure that this commitment gets to the cadres and party hooligans. As we struggle to get the economy growing again, a peaceful political environment is absolutely necessary and desirable. There is nowhere in this world where there are no disagreements among people. We must also be cognizant of the fact, that in all the older and nascent democracies, people and institutions function within the laws which are on their statutes. They may not be good laws, but they have to be obeyed until they have been changed. Those who don’t obey the laws, must bear the consequences, which are within the law. Lawlessness is not synonymous with democracy. We all have a duty to help create an environment where our children and children’s children, will live in peace and harmony.
