MWAISENI YAMA HON ROBERT KALIMI & WE THANK GOD FOR HIS HEALING MERCIES

By Miles Bwalya Sampa, MP

February 28th, 2024

Welcome back home Hon Robert Kalimi and we thank God for his healing mercies so many months since the unfortunate Road accident. The people of Lukashya constituency in Kasama district can now have back into Parliament their voice through you to represent their challenges.

Many thanks to all that played vital roles in the process of ensuring our beloved Hon Kalimi’s life is preserved to current good recovery. Some of these are;
1) The Republican President HH who only through his approval directly or indirectly, any Zambian gets evacuated for medical treatment on government coffers.

2) The Speaker of National Assembly Her Honour Nellie Mutti who has been supportive 100% and kept a close eye towards the Hon’s recovery. At one point or another, She authorized and personally led a Parliament entourage to visit the Hon at the hospital in SA.

3) The Mansa Central MP Hon Dr Chitalu Chilufya who provided the vital medical link and know how from the accident day to evacuation and later between Zambia and the South African Doctors that handled his hospital files.

4) Leader of Oppostion Hon Robert Chabinga that visited him in hospital often and also coordinated Parliament and Executive the support needed. Over Christmas period he led his family to visit Hon Kalimi and family at his hospital bed. They spent entire day together and enjoyed the Christmas meals together. I gather the two families had a good time on that day.

5) Hon Kalimi’s wife that was by his bedside all these months both in Zambia (Levy & UTH) and in SA (Milpark Hospital).

6) Hon Kalimi&s elder sister that has been at her brother’s bedside both in Zambia and South Africa for over 6 months or so.

I visited Hon Kalimi last while in the hospital in South Africa and knew he would be back home soon because he was passing same jokes on me (he calls nephew) as used to before the unfortunate incident.

Lesa wamaka and welcome back Yama.

Mubita Nawa’s candidacy: a call for transformation in INTERPOL’s leadership

In a historic bid that has captured the attention of the international community, Zambia has officially announced its nomination of Deputy Police Commissioner Mubita Nawa for the position of Secretary General of the International Police (INTERPOL).

The nomination of Nawa, a highly accomplished and respected law enforcement leader not only marks a significant moment for Zambia but also symbolises a pivotal shift towards inclusivity and diversity in the leadership of the world’s largest international police organisation.

For too long, the helm of INTERPOL has been steered by a narrow representation, predominantly from countries with similar geopolitical backgrounds.

Nawa says while the contributions of officials similar geopolitical backgrounds have been invaluable, there is a growing consensus that for INTERPOL to remain relevant and effective in a rapidly changing global landscape, it must include voices from all corners of the world.

“It must embrace a broader perspective that includes voices from all corners of the world. The complexities of crime in the modern era—shaped by intricate global networks and socio-economic factors – demand a leadership that brings firsthand experience from diverse contexts, especially from regions that have navigated the multi-faceted nature of crime through unique lenses,” he explains.

Nawa reckons that he represents a new breed of leadership, one deeply rooted in extensive international policing experience across multiple continents.

He has held strategic leadership positions in a wide range of police organisations, including the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Standby Force as well as the United Nations missions in Kosovo, Sudan and Liberia.

Importantly, Nawa, who is also Zambia Police Service Head of Administration, led INTERPOL’s Regional Bureau for Southern Africa, a senior management post within the INTERPOL headquarters structure considered as solid background for any leadership role in global policing.

His tenure has been marked by innovative approaches to tackling crime, fostering international cooperation, and building capacity within law enforcement agencies to address the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Nawa believes that with such a rich profile, his candidacy was unanimously endorsed by the various levels within the SADC region to the level of summit, a forum for the Heads of State and Government.

His vision for INTERPOL is one of transformation – leveraging technology, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing global police cooperation to combat transnational crime more effectively.

He says the call for change within INTERPOL’s leadership is not merely about geographical diversity but is about injecting new ideas, perspectives, and strategies into the organisation which was established on September 7, 1923, in Vienna, Austria.

INTERPOL’s membership has grown steadily since its creation. From the original 20 founding members in 1923, it now has 196 member countries to transform into global network of police.

“It is about acknowledging that the fight against crime in the 21st century requires a deep understanding of its global dynamics, which cannot be fully grasped from a singular viewpoint,” Nawa, whose nomination signals a readiness among INTERPOL’s member countries to broaden the organisation’s leadership landscape, moving beyond traditional power structures to embrace a truly international representation, says.

He says this moment presents an opportunity for INTERPOL to redefine its path forward, to evolve from its current state and emerge stronger, more adaptable, and truly representative of the international community it serves.

He says by considering leaders like him, INTERPOL can ensure its sustainability and credibility, reflecting the real interests of a global organisation dedicated to the safety and security of all nations.

“The urgency of this transformation cannot be overstated. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the nature of crime becomes ever more complex and borderless. INTERPOL’s ability to lead the global fight against crime hinges on its capacity to adapt and to reflect the diverse experiences and knowledge of its member countries,” Nawa says.

Zambia’s nomination of a highly accomplished law enforcement leader for Secretary General is viewed as a critical shift towards a more inclusive, dynamic, and effective international police cooperation.

In endorsing Nawa’s candidacy, member countries have the chance to ignite a new era for INTERPOL—one that embraces change, values diversity, and is equipped to tackle the challenges of global crime with renewed vigor and a broader perspective.

“The time has come for INTERPOL to break away from the stagnation of “more of the same” and step boldly into a future where it represents the interests of the whole world, not just a privileged few. This is about ensuring that INTERPOL remains the cornerstone of international law enforcement cooperation, ready to face the realities of crime in the 21st century with a leadership that is as diverse and dynamic as the communities it seeks to protect,” Nawa says…https://kalemba.news/…/mubita-nawas-candidacy-a-call…/

THE MYSTERIOUS HELMET ON THE MWATA’S HEAD

THE MYSTERIOUS HELMET ON THE MWATA’S HEAD

Mystery and heroic tales of how different traditional rulers and their royal households have led Zambia’s ethnic groupings remain one of the richest aspects about the countries culture.

What was the symbolism behind the brass helmet he was putting on and what is the history behind it? Zambia’s history text books rarely present a definitive explanation of its own rich past but here is the allegory:

The brass fireman’s helmet was presented to the 10th Mwata Kazembe, Kanyembo Ntemena in 1900 at the height of British and French advance into South-Central Africa. Ntemena assumed the brass helmet with the French inscription “Sapeurs pompiers de Paris”.

The occupation of North-Eastern Rhodesia did not happen peacefully, as local tribes resisted the British. The Ngoni of Mpezeni were defeated in 1897 after a series of battles against the British.

In 1899, the British marched into the area of the Lunda chief Mwata Kazembe. His rule had been weakened by disagreement over who succeed him. The Mwata had allegedly signed off mineral rights to the Belgiums and the French. The British decided to send The Mwata into exile, they sent him into exile, first in South Africa and later in Mauritius, by the time he returned his influence had been reduced and he had lost Katanga to the Belgium.

“Sapeurs pompiers de Paris” is a French Army unit founded in 1793 which serves as the primary fire and rescue service and is reputed to be one of the worlds most organised army fire units

The helmet serves as part of what is traditionally called the ‘Ichibangula’ or the public face of office in the Mwata Royal Household.

Thus the brass helmet is usually worn when the Mwata Kazembe receives guests at his palace and when he travels, whereas the other head gear known as the ‘Akatasa’ and ‘Amapango’ are strictly confined to the Umutomboko ceremony.

Since 1790, there have only been 19 Mwata Kazembe’s and 10 of those have worn the Brass Head gear as it has been passed on from one Mwata Kazembe down to the present one Paul Mpemba Kanyembo for the last 124 years.

AKA murder: Six suspects arrested for South African rapper’s killing

0

Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murders of well-known South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, and his close friend, celebrity chef and entrepreneur Tebello “Tibz” Motshoane.

The two were gunned down outside a restaurant in Durban a year ago, in a killing that shocked South Africans.

Police said hitmen were paid to target AKA but no motive was revealed.

In his career, he had a string of hits including with Nigeria’s Burna Boy.

The suspects, all aged below 36, are due to appear in court on Thursday.

“It was clear that AKA was monitored from the airport and Tibz was not the intended target in the murder on Florida Road in Durban,” Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, said in a press briefing on Tuesday night.

He said that the six accused men played different roles in the plot to kill AKA.

The suspects who are behind bars include two gunmen who fired several rounds at the victims, two spotters who followed AKA from Durban’s airport, someone who sourced the firearms which were used in the ambush, as well as the mastermind.

Some of the suspects are also linked to other murder cases which are unrelated to these killings.

Two of the men were found in a hideout in neighbouring Eswatini following a raid which was carried out by Interpol at the weekend.

They appeared at a magistrate’s court in Eswatini on Tuesday. Plans are under way to extradite the duo to face murder charges in South Africa.

Lt Gen Mkhwanazi said local media reports around the arrest may have tipped off a seventh suspect, who is still on the run.

Exhibits recovered during the arrests include four vehicles, firearms linked to the the murders of AKA and Motshoane and empty cartridges.

Police Minister Bheki Cele acknowledged that the killings of AKA and his friend, which was caught on CCTV cameras, disturbed many people in the country, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

“I hope South Africans will sleep better after this,” he said.

AKA began his musical career as part of the rap group Entity before he launched his solo career, winning several awards in South Africa for his music.

He was also celebrated internationally, with several nominations for awards from Black Entertainment Television (BET) and MTV Europe. He received a posthumous honour at the BET Hip Hop Awards last year.

NATO partners oppose Macron’s proposal to send soldiers to Ukraine

0

Despite the French President Macron, suggesting considering all options to send soldiers to Ukraine, some Nato countries such as the US, Germany, and the UK have stated they will not deploy troops to Ukraine.

According to Mr Macron, Western countries are struggling to reach a decision about dispatching their military forces to Ukraine.

The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, warned of a potential conflict if Nato troops were to enter the area.
The Russian army has advanced into Ukraine recently, and the capital city, Kyiv, is asking for more weapons quickly.

Mr Macron said at a news conference on Monday night that we should consider whether we need security that would require deploying some elements.

“I have already explained to you what France’s position is, which is a strategic ambiguity that I support. “

The French leader spoke in Paris at a meeting to help Ukraine, with leaders from Europe, the US, and Canada also there.

Russian President Vladimir Putin started a big war in Ukraine three years ago. It doesn’t seem like the war will end anytime soon. It’s the biggest war in Europe since World War Two.

Mr Macron’s words made other countries in Europe and Nato say something back.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, thinks that the best way for Ukraine to win is by giving them military aid. This means giving their troops the weapons and ammunition they need to protect themselves.

President Biden said that the US will not send soldiers to Ukraine to fight.

The German leader, Olaf Scholz, said that Europe and Nato have agreed not to send troops to Ukraine. This decision has not changed.

The UK Prime Minister’s spokesperson said the country is not planning to send a lot of soldiers to Ukraine, just a few to help train their forces.

The Italian Prime Minister’s office said that Italy does not support sending troops from European or Nato countries to Ukraine.

Mr Peskov, speaking for the Kremlin, said that Mr Macron’s suggestion is very important, but it does not benefit Nato members.

“He said we would have to talk about how likely a conflict is to happen. “

Before, the leader of Nato, Jens Stoltenberg said they were not thinking about sending soldiers to Ukraine, but they would still help Ukraine even though it’s not in Nato.

Several Nato countries, like Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic, agree with that stance.

Russia has a lot of weapons and a bigger military than Ukraine. Ukraine’s army relies on modern weapons from Western allies, especially the US.

Reallly intense gathering.

On Tuesday, Mr Biden asked leaders in Congress to agree to a $95bn US aid package. This money includes $60bn for Ukraine. They had a meeting in the Oval Office.

The package is having a hard time in the US House of Representatives. Republican leader Mike Johnson stood firm in the meeting, saying that they need to make more changes to the border before anything else.

Mr Johnson said the problem on the border between Mexico and the US is really important to him. Mr Biden has offered to include changes in the plan, but the Republicans are not agreeing.

Chuck Schumer, who is the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, said that the meeting in the Oval Office was the most intense one he has ever been in.

The US gives the most military aid to Ukraine. They have promised to give$45billion as of January15th,according to the Kiel Institute.

Germany is in second place, giving €17. 7bn of military help. The UK is next, giving €9. 1bn of military aid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky talked on video during the meeting in Paris on Monday. He said that working together to protect against Russian aggression will make our countries safer for many years.

‘I was test subject for covert nuclear tests conducted on Christmas Island’

0

A former soldier who saw a lot of big bomb explosions during the UK’s nuclear tests says he felt like a test subject.

Brian Cantle, who lived in Bedfordshire, was 21 years old when he was sent to Christmas Island as part of his national service in 1957. He and the other soldiers were not told what they were going to do there because the program was a secret.

Mr Cantle, who is now 87 years old, has been given a medal for his work on an island in the Pacific Ocean where nuclear tests were conducted.

The old soldier from Whipsnade saw many atomic and hydrogen bomb explosions during his year on the island. He was one of 22,000 British soldiers who took part in nuclear tests and clean-ups with the United States from 1952 to 1965.

Mr Cantle said he arrived in the middle of the night and felt like he was surrounded by sharks after sailing from Southampton.

“It was a simple island, very flat with reefs all around and sharks all around,” he said.

The Royal Engineers were supposed to build a camp for the British forces, but it became clear that there was something more important happening behind the scenes.

Mr Cantle said that someone told us there would be a bomb in about two months. When they dropped the bomb, there were also other aircraft there.

“We were told that an atomic bomb might be dropped, but we didn’t know much about it at the time. ”

When bombs were tested, Mr. Cantle said that the soldiers had to wear brown overalls and turn around to avoid being hurt by the bomb.

He said: “There was a bright light and then we were told to turn around and look at it. ” “It was a huge blast. ”

We were used as test subjects.

In the years after the nuclear tests, people have asked for the men who saw the tests to be told sorry for getting sick from the radiation.

“We were like test subjects, just following orders without question,” Mr. Cantle explained

“I’m not upset at all. It’s just a part of life and I’m grateful that I’m healthy. ”

The Grapple H-bomb tests were meant to prove that Britain could also have a big impact on the Cold War, after the U. S made the atomic bomb. Scientist Robert Oppenheimer. Scientist Robert Oppenheimer.

Every three months, they set off really strong hydrogen bombs.

But Cantle said that everything went back to normal at the company after the explosions. The chefs went back to making the next meal and he went back to building houses.

“We didn’t understand what was happening – no one told us much,” he said.

“It’s a good thing we didn’t know about it, looking back on it. “

Haiti PM Ariel Henry to visit Kenya over delayed troop deployment

0

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry will soon visit Kenya in a bid to sort out issues that have stalled the deployment of Kenyan police officers to the troubled country.

This was revealed by Haiti’s Office of the Prime Minister on Sunday which said that Henry will, after attending the 46th Ordinary Meeting of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Heads of State and Government in Guyana, visit Nairobi. The meeting will end on Wednesday.

“After the Caricom meeting, Prime Minister Henry will travel to Kenya to finalise modalities for the deployment of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) with the country’s authorities and those of other African states,” a statement from the Office said.

Henry is expected to meet top security officers in Kenya to discuss and sign agreements before the deployment of police officers.

This comes a few months after a team from Haiti visited Kenya to hold discussions over the same matter.

The 1,000 troops expected to be sent to Haiti are teams from the Rapid Deployment Unit, Anti-Stock Theft Unit, General Service Unit (GSU) and Border Patrol Unit.

Some two weeks ago, Haiti announced that it is working on an official agreement with Kenyan officials to secure the long-awaited deployment.

Earlier this week, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced that Benin will also be contributing 2,000 troops to assist in the multinational security force approved by the UN to curb gang violence in the Caribbean country. Kenya will be leading the process.

She added that the deployment has to be soon with cases of violence increasing in Haiti, where at least 300 gangs control a larger part of the capital and accounted for 83 percent of killings and injuries recorded last year. At least 8,400 people were killed by the gangs in 2023.

“This mission is key to helping the Haitian National Police restore peace and security, enabling free and fair elections, and alleviating the humanitarian crisis,” Ms Thomas-Greenfield said.

It had been planned that the Kenyan team be deployed to Haiti in February, but this was delayed following a block by the court which argued that the government lacked the authority to send police officers outside Kenya.

It further stated that there is a need for reciprocity, as dictated by Kenyan laws, to enable the police officers to be deployed abroad. This saw Haiti send a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to Kenya on the need to deploy the police officers there.

President William Ruto, after the court’s ruling, said Kenya would complete all the processes specified by the court so that it still sends police officers to Haiti.

The US had initially said it would give some $200 million (approximately Ksh29.4 billion) and vowed to increase measures to stem the flow of illicit arms to Haiti. The UN believes most of the firearms being smuggled to the Caribbean country come from the US.

At least 800 people were killed, injured or kidnapped in Haiti in January alone, a fact that the UN says needs urgent measures to be taken and control the runaway rates of crime in Haiti.

During the G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro last week, more countries including France, Benin and Canada committed financial, personnel and other kind of commitments to the mission. Canada for instance pledged some $60million (Approximately $48.82 billion).

Officials from Kenya, led by former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, met with their Haitian counterparts in the US late last year to set a deadline for the arrival of Kenyan forces as well as drafting an MoU.

Nikki Haley easily defeated by Donald Trump in Michigan primary

0

Donald Trump has emerged as the top contender for the Republican presidential nomination after securing a comfortable win in the Michigan primary. With nearly all the votes counted, Mr. Trump won 68%, while Nikki Haley only got 27%.

Ms Haley hasn’t won any races in the contest to choose the party’s candidate for the November election. She promised to keep fighting and believes that Mr. Trump can’t beat Joe Biden in the presidential election.

As the results started coming in on Tuesday night, the ex-UN ambassador told the media “We need to save our country. ”

However, she admitted that it is very likely that the Republican party now supports Mr. Trump’s views instead of her own.

Ms Haley promised to continue seeking votes, but it seems more and more certain that there will be another election in November between Mr. Trump and President Biden.

Miss Haley’s loss to Mr. Trump in Michigan is her fifth loss in a row in the primary elections. Ms Haley lost to a 77-year-old in South Carolina over the weekend.

Tuesday’s defeat is another setback for her hopes of becoming president. Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP), a group started by the wealthy Koch brothers, said they won’t give money to her campaign anymore after she didn’t do well in South Carolina.

However, her campaign said that the results and the percentage of Michigan Republican voters who did not support the former president are a warning for Trump in November.

On Monday night, Mr. Trump said in a statement that his campaign won by an even bigger margin in Michigan than they expected, even though he didn’t go there to campaign.

He also said that car factory workers, who are a big group of voters in the state, “support us”. In the past month, a union called United Automobile Workers, which represents 400,000 workers, supported President Biden’s campaign for re-election.

A person can become the Republican nominee by winning 1,215 delegates in state-level elections.

Most of the delegates in Michigan will be given out on Saturday, during the state’s party convention. Only 16 people are chosen by the first vote.

Next week, there will be more delegates available for the candidates from both parties during Super Tuesday.

No one is really competing against Mr. Biden to become the Democratic candidate.

Even though he easily won the Michigan primary, many people voted “uncommitted” in the Democratic contest as a protest against the White House’s support for Israel during the war in Gaza.

EDGAR IS SERIOUS ABOUT THE COUP

By: Romeo Kangombe

When Edgar Lungu plotted the treason case against Hakainde Hichilema, he was not joking. He was serious and executed everything according to plan.

When the Previous regime plotted to gas citizens, they were not joking. They were serious and executed everything according to plan.

They have gone to the extremes before and will go to the extremes again. They killed citizens in cold blood for offering solidarity to Hakainde Hichilema. All of us were on the hit list . If PF had won the 2021 elections, this country would have experienced the worst genocide the world has ever seen.

Fellow citizens, you are aware what we went through during the Sesheke by-election. Live bullets were flying everywhere, HH had to take refuge in the bush. Do you really think this is a person who would joke about causing anarchy or a coup d’etat? Definitely not.

The former president has not accepted defeat to President Hakainde Hichilema and he will do everything possible to frustrate his reign. A series of coordinated activities have been planned against Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government. Some of these activities border on treason.

They have been trying to incite citizens to rise against government through propaganda it has not worked so they want to use force. They tried to incite citizens by lying that ZNS mealie meal is GMO and not fit for consumption but the people have refused to buy this propaganda.

Without any fear of contradiction, I wish to inform the former head of state and his minions that “WE ARE READY FOR YOU” Do not mistake our seemingly quietness for a weakness.

Edgar Lungu and his minions should forever be grateful to President Hakainde Hichilema for restraining citizens from revenging the atrocities of PF.

Edgar Lungu Irresponsible Tantrums , Agitating Citizens Will End In Tears- Mark Simuuwe

0

ECL IRRESPONSIBLE TANTRUMS , AGITATING CITIZENS WILL END IN TEARS; HE CAN CREATE CHECKS AND BALANCES WITHOUT AGITATING CITIZENS BY COMMITTING TREASON DELIBERATELY.

By Mark Simuuwe

It will not be surprising if ECL gets what he is looking for soon . Just by looking at him , people can tell that he is not okay. He is not able to check his background or reflect on his background or public conduct . He needs a full check up.

The fact that President Hakainde Hichilema has prioritized economic recovery by reopening Indeni , create unity of purpose in a country which was seriously divided , reversing KCM Liquidation, managing debt , reopening Mopani by finding equity partner , allowed Edgar Lungu to hold Press Conferences which himself could not allow, ECL jogging freely , government recruiting youths for employment in education , health , immigration, defense , police , correctional services, local government , paying council workers and farmers their arrears and money respectively, ended bloodshed, restored budget credibility , created media freedom, inacted access to information bill , abolished criminal defamation of the president , abolished death penalty , attracted investment and paid all those owed as civil servants in retirement packages from 2017 , does not mean he is weak to ensuring the law is enforced on law breakers.

President HH has decided to run the country not based on vengeance, but on integrity, humility and peace even when he was the most persecuted opposition leader ever in the history of Zambia by Edgar Lungu.

I am seeing HH being pushed against the wall . HH is human and it won’t be surprising if ECL gets what he is looking for .

If there is someone who should open his mouth after causing so much economic misery and pain which has resulted in problems today , due to irresponsible borrowing, tyranny, ethnic hegemony, division, closure of Indeni and closure of mines , it is Edgar Lungu .

Firstly , what kind of leadership did ECL provide ? A closer look at his activities will remind ourselves. This is the man who clinched illegal deals at State House as per media reports then; citizens do well remember the activities of Kaizer Zulu . Among other reminders of ECL leadership include the following l, as this is the man :

1. Who destroyed the economy raising the debt to $31 billion? Today, the UPND government is paying K41.3billion which we could have avoided – any economy which is debt chocked cannot grow ; this is why ECL ended up failing to pay council workers , failed to employ in education , health and everywhere; his government was on autopilot.

2. This is the man who planted extreme bloodshed in the country- killing citizens indiscriminately like Nsama Nsama , Joseph Kaunda , Mapenzi Chibulo , Lawrence Banda , to mention but a few ;

3. This is the man who ran down the mines and over 10,000 workers were retrenched and condemned to joblessness – other mines were preparing to leave the country ;

4. This is the man who whose party found mealie meal at k37 and took it to k280.

5. This is the man whose party found fuel at K5 and took it to above K23 , increasing it by over 400 % and this has never happened in the history of Zambia from Independence;

6. This is the man whose party found fertilizer at k95 and left it at K850;

7. This is the man who increased the number of graduates on the street to over 300,000 in Zambia after he imposed employment freeze ;

8. This is the man who was mentioned in the Malawi Maize-gate scandal after he cheated citizens that there was maize export ban in Zambia ;

9. This is the man who killed when UPND attempted to assemble for a rally and that is why Mapenzi Chibulo and Lawrence Banda are no more under his reign ;some citizens still have bullets in their bodies ;

10. This is the man who fired citizens based on the region they came from – and justified his behavior in public ;

11. This is the man who scrapped off meal allowances for students causing extreme hunger in Universities;

12. This is the man who subjected council workers to 7 – 15 months salary arrears, causing hunger and mystery at household level ;

13. This is the man who could not pay over 258,000 farmers for their goods supplied to FRA but unleashed carders on them whenever they planned a protest ;

14. This is the man who arrested HH 15 times and sent him to over 127 days in prison for no offence committed – today he wants to agitate citizens to rise up against government ; once caged he should not cry .

15. This is the man who has not explained the gassing matrix in which some of his party members were mentioned in Chingola , arrested and released;

16. This is the man who promised to arrest HH as soon as he ( ECL) handed over power to himself – today he is walking and jogging .

17. This is the man who failed to pay TAZAMA and Tazara workers their dues .

18. This is the man whose government lost social cash transfer money dubiously and only found it after a week in a ZANCO account , leading to withdrawal of funding by the UK ;

19. This is the man who failed to pay retirees their dues ;

20. This is the man who became an international embarrassment as he could not articulate or engage in any serious media interview;

21. This is the man who closed Indeni refinery and sent over 1500 workers into joblessness; it has been opened and workers are back yet he believes closing the company was good leadership;

22. This is the man whose by- elections were characterized by brazing mini machine guns in Sesheke ;

23. This is the man who ran a government of PF carders brandishing unregistered guns on the street ; he ran a failed state !

24. This is the man who did not allow any form of criticism and shut down media houses ;

25. This is the man who remained arrogant and did not take any advice either from international institutions or his associates.

Just by looking at him , it is clear that he is not okay and cannot reason properly. Today, he goes to Muchinga to ask people to vote for him with all these sins ; he needs medical attention indeed . He is agitating citizens for the ruins he caused . Once punished, let him not cry

Edgar Chagwa Lungu and His Call for Uprising

Edgar Chagwa Lungu and His Call for Uprising

By David Zulu

I watched the video of the sixth President, Edgar Lungu, addressing a small group of supporters at Kabwata Police Station yesterday, and frankly, I felt sad, if not somewhat embarrassed and bewildered. Each time I see the former President addressing an audience, I hold my breath, thinking, “Here we go again… for more embarrassments.”

I’ve often considered declaring any area or studio where Edgar Lungu speaks from as a potential disaster area. This is because the man is not a natural politician. In his days, others spoke on his behalf, knowing that each time he stumbled through an unprepared script, it would result in a disaster. Phrases like “I will lock up HH immediately after winning the election,” “I will hand over power to myself,” “Mfwiti Mfwiti,” “Ubomba Mwibala alya mwibala” or “I will abolish free education” were cringe-worthy disasters!

The only difference in yesterday’s incident is that Lungu touched on a matter of national security. When he was President, he would have locked up anyone advocating for what he was advocating for yesterday – insurrection.

In hindsight, Lungu’s utterances are testament of the Democratic space in the current administration. In his time, not only would the PF militia and police physically maim citizens, Zambians were even scared of whispering their dissatisfaction because of the terror inflicted. The rising he now refers to was through the ballot, which clearly he finds hard to accept.

He reminds me of the recently held Presidential elections in the DRC, where one losing candidate called on the Congolese people to follow him into the bush to start a guerrilla war against the government. He only managed to mobilize two Landcruisers; the people refused to follow him. Similarly, the Dictator President Bongo called on people to “make some noise,” but not a single human being even made a whisper. He was on his own.

A call to insurrection? My advice to former President Edgar Lungu: you are on your own.

MR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU IS PUSHING HIS LUCK TOO DEEP

February 28th, 2024

LUSAKA – We wish to advise former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu not to push his fingers too deep into the lucky jar because the chickens might just come home to roost soon.

Mr. Lungu should not take advantage of the respect and tolerance Zambians have for him as former Head of State to start mocking them with crocodile tears and deliberate actions aimed at seeking public sympathy. His treasonous statement needs actions.

Mr. Lungu should not think that Zambians have already forgotten the path of thuggery, police brutality, infringement of human rights and freedoms and theft of public resources that the PF under his leadership made this country go through.

Seeing Mr. Lungu today crying about police action makes every Zambian sick to the bone because this is the man who at the helm of his rule declared unruly cadres as being part of his office while police brutality and attacks on perceived political opponents was the hallmark of his dictatorial rule and today he wants to act victim.

Didn’t he know that President Hakainde Hichilema was Zambian when he and his Home Affairs Ministers sent cadres in uniform to the Hichilema residence to break his house and pick him in the middle of the night. Didn’t he know that MMD president Nevers Mumba and his executive were Zambians when he sent the Zambia Police to teargas an indoor meeting in Vubwi or maybe he has forgotten that both Nsama Nsama and Joseph Kaunda were Zambians when his police officers killed them in cold blood near police headquarters. Has he forgotten that Frank Mugala and Vestus Shimuzhila were Zambians when police under his rule ended their young lives.

Mr. Lungu should realise that we can spend the whole day reminding him of how he treated citizens as less Zambians during his autocratic and dictatorial 7 years rule.

Today Mr Lungu can face the country and tell its citizens that the police will make Zambians rise against President Hakainde Hichilema and his Government. All because the police dispersed a group of unruly cadres that still think they have instruments of power with them.

Zambians rose against him and his tyrannical Government in 2021 because they were fed up of being ruled by thugs and cadres that had no regard for the rule of law and freedoms of other citizens. He should not expect another uprising atleast not for his selfish sake. We demand that the Zambia Police Service and other security wings quickly move in and perform their noble duties and stop anyone trying to place the security of this nation at risk through threats of an uprising.

Mr. Lungu should not take the tolerance and silence on both his past and current criminality as weakness by the UPND led New Dawn Administration. President Hichilema in his victory acceptance speech assured Mr Lungu of his safety despite his administration’s atrocities but unfortunately the former Head of State wants to take advantage and abuse the olive branch extended to him. As the party in Government, we urge the State to take keen interest in Mr Lungu’s activities which are becoming inimical to the security and well-being of this country.

The UPND is worried at Mr. Lungu’s outbursts during his famous graveyard speech when announcing his return to politics as well as yesterday’s and call on investigative wings to take a keen interest in them. We shall not allow treasonous statements to go unabated.

Mr Lungu’s failure to act like a Statesman has forced President Hakainde Hichilema to turn to former Republican Vice-Presidents for support and advise on governance issues, a role which the now politically active former President should have been performing. We wonder whether Mr.Lungu realizes that he is the only former President in the region if not on the African continent and beyond who is never consulted or engaged like his Peers. We call on him to take a deep reflection on the direction his life is taking.

The hallmark of Zambia’s governance hinges on the respect for the rule of law, peace and security, tenets that the Lungu administration had nearly destroyed. Zambia under the Hichilema administration is back where it belongs and Zambians are happy and not even Mr. Lungu’s cry for sympathy will make them forget what they went through before 2021.

We shall not allow Mr Lungu and his cohorts to plant seeds of discontent among our peaceful citizens hence our clarion call on security wings to keep their systems active to make sure our peace is maintained. The UPND and its administration wishes to assure Zambians within and outside the country that it will continue maintaining territorial peace while improving the cost of living and governance in general.

Edgar Lungu needs counselling – Mayangwa

Lungu needs counselling – Mayangwa

A CONCERNED citizen has urged those around former president Edgar Lungu to organise him a counsellor to help him heal from the pain of losing the 2021 election.

Reacting to Lungu’s suggestions that police conduct may lead to Zambians rising against President Hakainde Hichilema and remove him from power before 2026, Dillon Mayangwa said much as some people may laugh at the joke, the former president needed serious counselling to help accept his status.

Before the election which ended his seven year reign of terror, Lungu vowed that he would win the poll by not less than half a million votes but as the Electoral Commission of Zambia announced the final results, close to three million had voted against the now United Kwacha Alliance boss.

And Mayangwa feels the former president needs counselling to heal from the defeat that he clearly did not expect.

“I feel very sad to see how our former president is conducting himself in public. Everything about him starting from his conduct to his utterances clearly point to a man who is hurting, a man that is so bitter, a man that needs psychological help,” Mayangwa observed.

“Otherwise how do you explain Lungu’s criticism of the police when he’s regime one of the most brutal in the history of Africa. Under his reign, it was not only police who shot dead people, thugs from his party brutalised and killed people too,” Mayangwa noted.

He noted that it was public knowledge that his own barber had been convicted of killing a member of the opposition.

“The internet is full of video evidence of the brutality of the police and PF cadres during Lungu’s presidency and yet the peace and law abiding citizens of this country did not rise and remove him from power and yet today, the same man is saying Zambians will rise to remove President Hakainde Hichilema from power.

“This to me, points to a serious case of mental health that may require long sessions of counselling to help our former president come to terms that he lost an election and that he needs to accept,” he said.

Mayangwa said the longer Lungu stays in denial the more his situation will deteriorate.

Hakainde isn’t a regional President to be compromising health of Zambians – Kalaba

Hakainde isn’t a regional President to be compromising health of Zambians – Kalaba

By Thomas Ngala

CITIZENS First (CF) president Harry Kalaba has accused the government of compromising the country’s food security.
He reminds President Hakainde Hichilema that he is not a regional president to be compromising the health of Zambians so that DRC can have food security.

Kalaba also castigated Vice-President Mutale Nalumango over her GMO remarks she made in parliament on Friday.
During the Vice-President’s Question Time in the House, Nalumango told Zambians that GMO mealie meal is safe for consumption.
Her remarks followed the theft of the commodity last week at Kasumbalesa border’s ZNS warehouse.
But Kalaba argued that consuming stolen imported GMO mealie meal is harmful.

“It is disheartening to note comments by the Vice-President Mutale Nalumango that GMO mealie meal is safe for consumption. Her comments come in the wake of a press release by the chief marketing and public relations officer in the Zambia National Service (ZNS) dated February 20 which has been circulating on the social media regarding stolen imported GMO mealie meal,” he said. “It is worrisome that the stolen imported Eagle mealie meal is part of the Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) commodities that are prohibited for consumption in Zambia.”

He described Vice-President Nalumango’s comments as an attempt to water down and cover up a grave scandal of the stolen GMO mealie meal which is potentially being consumed by starving citizens somewhere.

“As a matter of concern the government has indicated in the press release that ZNS will now intensify security measures at all the depots to prevent any further occurrences,” he said. “We wonder why there was laxity on the part of the government in the first place to safeguard the GMO commodity amidst the scarcity of non-GMO mealie meal, the staple food in the country.”

Kalaba said it is sad to see Kazungula having some GMO mealie meal purportedly destroyed by the National Biosafety Agency (NBA).
He wondered how much has not been destroyed and has been consumed by citizens.

“The calculated carelessness of the UPND government is putting Zambia at risk for increased behavioral disorders in children and cancers… Citizens must understand that South Africa has been buying maize from Zambia because of the policies around non-GMOs. They started buying maize for cereal from Zambia after parents and health workers saw an increase of behavioral disorders in children,” he said. “Equally, the World Food [Programme] has been buying Zambia’s maize despite it being more expensive than the GMO maize because the UN agency does not want to compromise the health of refugees. But for Zambia, Hakainde and his government are in the forefront of compromising the health of its people.”

He said the government is now talking of food insecurity with the current drought yet they found sufficient strategic reserves for 2019, 2020, and 2021 which they decided to offload and sell.

“Even this year, they have sold Zambia’s strategic reserves to neighbouring countries and decided to import GMO for citizens. President Hakainde has compromised Zambia’s position in terms of the GMO policies which has seen countries and global institutions preferring to buy our maize,” said Kalaba. “Hakainde must stop buying GMO maize from South Africa on the pretext that it’s going to Congo. Congo has its own legitimately elected leaders who can equally procure the maize from South Africa to improve food security in that country. Hakainde must realise that he is not a regional President to be compromising the health of Zambians so that Congo can have food security. Zambians voted for him. His allegiance is to Zambia first, respect the Constitution of Zambia on biosafety and not to abrogate it in the careless manner he is doing.”

NAMIBIAN LAWMAKERS ON BENCHMARKING VISIT IN WESTERN PROVINCE

MEMBERS of the National Council and National Assembly from Namibia are in the country particularly in Western Province on a bench marking visit to share ideas on how the province is managing road infrastructure development.

The team, who called on the Provincial Permanent Secretary, is also on a mission to share ideas on how to respond to the impact of floods and the droughts in the two sister countries.

ZANIS reports that the steering committee, which is in charge of transport, infrastructure and housing is on a three day visit to the province in order to also compare notes on issues concerning infrastructure development such as roads and bridges and how maritime and inland transport is coordinated in the region.

Namibian National Council Steering Committee Chairperson Alfeus Kaushiweni said idea sharing between the two countries is cardinal especially that the terrain in Western province is similar to that of Namibia.

The Namibian lawmakers’ visit also comprised the Zambian National Assembly Committee in charge of Transport, Works and Supply led by the Vice Chairperson Joel Chibuye.

Mr Chibuye said the Namibian National Council and National Assembly wanted to know how the bills referred to the committee on transport, works and supply of the Zambian Assembly and the process that follows are handled and also how international treaties and agreements are arrived upon.

And Western Province Permanent Secretary Simomo Akapelwa commended the committee members for the timely visit which seeks to enhance infrastructure development in the two countries especially in the western region.

Mr Akapelwa said road infrastructure development is cardinal to the region as it is the main route connecting the two countries making it easy for the transportation of copper and timber among other products through to Walvis Bay.

Mr Akapelwa told the Namibian lawmakers that it was regrettable that Western province has been hit by severe droughts due to lack of rainfall causing damage to crops in the region.

The committee also met with selected Heads of Department among them Road Development Agency, Forestry, Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, Maritime and Inlands.

GOVERNMENT REMOVES BUYBACK OPTION FROM NHIMA

GOVERNMENT REMOVES BUYBACK OPTION FROM NHIMA

MINISTER of Labour and Social Security Brenda Tembatamba today announced the removal of the buyback option under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIMA).

Ms Tambatamba says the buyback policy, which was introduced in 2020 and waived the waiting period that was required for members of the scheme to access services has been removed due to the high cost implications on NHIMA.

The Minister, who was delivering a Ministerial statement in Parliament, explained that whilst the introduction of the buyback policy was well intended, a large number of members from the informal sector opted to pay premiums only when sick and in urgent need of medical services, as some even required expensive medical procedures including cancer treatment, which in some cases cost as high as K8,000 per member.

“Despite the good intentions of the buyback programme, a large number of members from the informal sector only registered as members of the scheme when they were already sick. As a result, they would only pay the required average premium of K200 (which is K50 by 4 months) and then access all the services such as laboratory services, drugs and in some cases even very expensive services such as CT and MRI scans,” she noted.

She added that most of the members even stopped paying premiums once they received the medical service and only returned to pay the K200 premium arrears under the buyback option when they fall ill again.

Ms Tambatamba lamented that such practices are affecting the sustainability of NHIMA and feared that if continued, they may render NHIMA bankrupt as the trend proved that the number of claims so far exceeded the premiums received.

“The actuarial evaluation on scheme sustainability conducted, revealed that the surge in claims was mainly emanating from the buyback option clause which was prevalent in the informal sector. The actuarial study also revealed that if the same trajectory is maintained, the scheme will run bankrupt. The removal of this option is primarily to save the fund from bankruptcy and from grinding to a halt under our watch,” she said.

Ms Tambatamba disclosed that the new approach which will be implemented in this regard is aimed at encouraging the informal sector and the public at large to pre- register their membership and to ensure that members’ contributions are consistent to avoid a repeat of the situation.

She that the Ministry has to this effect embarked on a rigorous sensitisation campaign on the need to contribute consistently and pre-register in order to access the health insurance services.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIMA) was established by Act no. 2 of 2018 as a compulsory scheme to provide reliable health care financing for all Zambian citizens and legal residents, in line with the government’s agenda of bringing services closer to the people and ensuring Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

The buyback option enabled new members to register and pay their premiums in retrospect as a buy back of four months and immediately access necessary healthcare services.

Similarly, old members whose payment fell into arrears would also settle the arrears and immediately access necessary healthcare services as long as the arrears were within the four months period.

I NEVER MURDERED VET DOCTOR EVANS MWENGWE, BUT JUST STOLE HIS CAR, MURDER SUSPECT TELLS COURT

I NEVER MURDERED VET DOCTOR EVANS MWENGWE, BUT JUST STOLE HIS CAR, MURDER SUSPECT TELLS COURT

By Fox Correspondent
AN accused, Kenani Jere, has testified in the Lusaka High Court that he never murdered veterinary Doctor Evans Mwape Mwengwe, but only stole his Mercedes Benz.

Jere says he is only guilty of stealing Dr. Mwengwe’s Mercedes Benz and not killing him as he did not do that as suggested.

He explains that after he successfully stole Dr. Mwengwe’s car, him and his girlfriend, Doris Nduba who is also co-accused of murdering the Doctor, they drove to Chibolya Compound where they bought Cocaine and consumed as they partied their night away.

Jere said he was introduced to drugs by his girlfriend Doris Nduba in 2019 as she was a drug addict too.

In his testimony before High Court Chibbabbuka, Jere described how he stole the vehicle at a named Filing Station in Garden compound area.

He said the break lights and head lumps of Dr. Mwengwe’s Car were on but that Dr Mwengwe was not inside.

This is in a matter Nduba, a Mulungushi University student, Kenani Jere, Keegan Zulu, who are businessmen, Josat Tembo, a mechanic and Misty Bubala Mukatasha are alleged to have murdered Dr Mwengwe between June 10 and 12, 2021, in Lusaka.

The five are also charged with aggravated robbery.

He was murdered on his way from Kabwe to Lusaka and his partly burnt body dumped in Kabangwe area.

The accused are alleged to have stolen the victim’s Mercedes Benz, ML320 registration No. BAB 2838 valued at USD14, 500, Infinix phone worth K5,000, Macbook laptop valued at K23,800 and two bags of maize worth K300.

When the matter came up for defence before Justice Ruth Chibbabbuka, Jere denied murdering the Doctor but accepted stealing his vehicle.

He said on that fateful night of June 10, he and the girlfriend, Nduba went to Chibolya around 23hours where he bought Cocaine which cost K70 per rock from a drug dealer only known as Brown.

He also admitted that he received all the payments for the vehicle parts which was dismantled by Tembo and Zulu.

And Nduba testified that on June 10, 2021 she received a call from Jere at around 21: 00 hours, asking if they could have a good time together as he was coming from Kabwe to Lusaka.

She accepted the invitation and met Jere her boyfriend somewhere around Heroes stadium.

Nduba said Jere was in the company of Mukatasha and driving a Mercedes Benz.

“I asked Kenani whose car (Mercedes Benz) it was because he was the one in the driver’s seat. Kenani said it was his uncle’s car. After Kenani asked me if I could drive to Chibolya, I asked him why? He said he was too intoxicated to drive. So I got to the driver’s seat and Kenani went to the back seat. And I drove them to Chibolya,” she narrated.

Nduba said in Chibolya she packed in front of a drug dealers shop, but after a few minutes, a Toyota Hilux with three police officers inside approached them.

She named the two police officers as Dalitso Mawere and Hamukamba and did not know the third officer.

“Then the officers told me that I shouldn’t be in Chibolya at such an hour and that he was giving us five minutes to leave. I agreed with them and told them that I was going to leave as soon as I went to the vehicle,” she said.

Nduba said they left the spot and drove to a woman’s house in Chibolya known as Mama Didi’s.

She said they parked in the yard and continued to party including abusing cocaine.

Nduba said they next morning, the three decided to book at a guest house near Heroes Stadium where she took a shower and rested for a while.

She testified that at around 10:00 hours, she left the two and went to town to follow up on her bags.

“Around 14:00 hours, Kenani asked me where I was, I said I was in town. He then said him and Misty were coming to town because they wanted to see me. I met with them and went together to Chibolya. So there in Chibolya, we were seated at a drug dealer’s shop. I kept noticing Kenani and Misty walking away to speak with someone. That person I later got to know as Keagan Zulu,” she said.

Nduba told the court that few days after Zulu had left for Kabwe, she received a call from a strange number on his MTN sim card.

She was asked by the man if she was the girl seen with Jere.

“When I answered yes, he asked me where I was and I told him I was in Chilenje. About 30 minutes later,I was walking towards Chilenje market and two officers grabbed me. One of my left arm was hurt. One of them pressed something on my lower back, I didn’t see what it was but it hurt,’” she stated.

Nduba said she was taken to a vehicle and put on the backseat and slapped.

At Lusaka Central Police, she later informed that owner of the vehicle the boyfriend drove had been murdered.

Judge Chibbabbuka adjourned the matter to June, 2024 for continued defence.

Russian human rights activist Oleg Orlov receives a jail term

0

The Russian human rights activist Oleg Orlov has finally been fined and then sent to prison.

Oleg Orlov is one of many government critics in Russia who have been fined and then sent to prison. Last year, well-known sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky was convicted of publicly supporting terrorism for comments he made about the attack on the Crimean bridge in 2022. In this situation, the prosecutor asked for a longer sentence. Earlier this month, a judge decided to send Mr Kagarlitsky to jail for five years.

In October 2023, the court found the Oleg Orlov guilty. However, the punishment at that time had been much less severe.

Oleg Orlov was required to pay a 150,000 rouble fine but he avoided imprisonment. This is approximately £1,290 or $1,630.The lawyers said the penalty was not sufficient. The court said the decision was wrong, so there will be a new trial.

In Russia, the government was starting to become less okay with people speaking out against them.

Oleg Orlov didn’t pay much attention to the second court hearing because he was protesting being made to go back. Instead, he sat in court reading a book called The Trial by Franz Kafka. The book talks about how life can be unfair and ridiculous.

Last year, when I talked to him before his first trial, he said he didn’t do anything wrong.

“He told me that the article I’m being accused of is about trying to make the Russian armed forces look bad, and not supporting the interests of Russia and its people, and trying to disrupt peace and security. ”

To start, the Russian Constitution promises people can say what they want. I wrote a report about what I think about the events. Charging me for that breaks the rules of the constitution.

Also, what is happening in Ukraine – let’s be clear and call it a war – is not good for Russia and its people.

“Trying to keep peace in the world. That’s not working at all. ” It makes me think of what George Orwell wrote in “War is Peace” and “Freedom is Slavery. ” “He said the idea that the war in Ukraine is good for peace around the world is just not true. ”

This week, Oleg Orlov said that Russia is getting worse and worse.

He showed examples of bad things happening to people who speak out against the government, like when Alexei Navalny died in prison and when other government critics were punished by the courts. He described what was happening in his country as “the loss of freedom. ”

“We know why we’re being held, put on trial, arrested, punished and killed. ” We are getting in trouble for speaking out against the people in charge. “This is totally not allowed in Russia today,” he said.

He told the judge and prosecutor that they should realize that the system of punishment they are involved in could eventually harm them too, just like it has in the past.

Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine two years ago, the Russian government has created many strict laws to punish people who speak out against them or oppose the war in Ukraine.

Russia has made it a crime to say bad things about the army and to spread false information about the use of the Russian armed forces.

The “Law on Fakes” has been used to put Kremlin critics like Ilya Yashin in prison.

Last year, Vladimir Kara-Murza, who opposes the government and is against war, was found guilty of betraying his country and given a 25-year prison sentence.

The Russian opposition is having a tough time.

Alexei Navalny, who was a strong critic of the Russian government, has died. Other important people who spoke out against the government are in jail or have left the country.

At the moment, it looks like Vladimir Putin’s main opponents and possible challengers have been taken out of the political arena.

Macron claims European security depends on Russia’s defeat in Ukraine

0

French President Emmanuel Macron said it is important for Europe’s safety to stop Russia in Ukraine and Ukraine is asking for more weapons to do so.

During his speech in Paris, he announced that a coalition of European leaders had pledged to provide Ukraine with weaponry capable of reaching both short and long distances.

According to him, the decision to send troops to Ukraine is causing disagreement among people, and weighing all options is important.
Russian soldiers have recently gained more territory in Ukraine, which is struggling to find enough weapons.

Kyiv needs weapons and supplies from the US and other Western countries to keep fighting Russia, which has a much bigger army and lots of ammunition.

The House of Representatives has to agree on giving$95billion in aid, with $61billion of it going to Ukraine. But it’s going to be difficult for them to agree on it.

Over the weekend, Ukraine’s defense minister said that half of the aid from Western countries to Kyiv was late, which has caused the loss of lives and territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin started a big attack on Ukraine three years ago. The war, which is the largest in Europe since World War Two,does not seem like it will end soon.

On Monday, European leaders, like Germany’s Chancellor and the UK’s Foreign Secretary, met to help Ukraine.

Representatives from the US and Canada were also there.

President Macron said that it is important for Europe to defeat Russia for safety and stability.

He called Russia the “main attacker” and said, “We are not fighting with the Russian people. ” We don’t want them to win.

Mr Macron said a group of countries will give Ukraine long-range missiles and bombs to make big attacks. He didn’t say when those weapons will arrive.

He didn’t say no to sending soldiers from Western countries to Ukraine, but he admitted there are disagreements among the allies.

“He said that today, there was no agreement to officially send troops to the ground in any way. ” “But everything should be included in the dynamic. ” We will work hard to make sure Russia doesn’t win this war.

“He said we shouldn’t rule out the possibility that security might require deployment of some elements. ” “I have clearly told you what France’s position is, which is strategic ambiguity and I still support it. “

The Prime Minister of Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, said that his country does not plan to send its troops to fight in Ukraine.

He was responding to comments made by the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who said that some countries are willing to send their soldiers to Ukraine, some countries are not willing to send soldiers, and some countries are still thinking about it.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that working together to defend against Russian aggression makes our nations safer for many years. He said this during a meeting on Monday.

Russia said many times that if Western troops go to Ukraine, it will start a fight between Russia and Nato.

Trump files appeal in fraud case as daily interest of $112,000 rises

0

Donald Trump is requesting a different judge to reconsider a decision that mandates him to pay $454 million in fines and interest for a fraud case in New York.

This month’s decision resulted in a $355 million award, but the amount will continue to grow with interest, increasing by a minimum of $112,000 each day.
The New York Attorney General Letitia James said she will take some of Mr. Trump’s things if he doesn’t pay.

He was caught for lying about how much his property was worth to get a better deal on his loan.

Judge Arthur Engoron stopped the ex-president from doing any business in the state of New York for three years.

The Republican candidate for president is going to court again on Monday. This might cause more legal problems for him before the election in November, when he will probably run against President Joe Biden.

Mr Trump always said he would appeal the decision because he thinks it’s a political attack against him.

His lawyer, Alina Habba, said they want the higher court to cancel the big fine and make people trust the legal system in New York again.

In their legal document, the lawyers asked a higher court to decide if the lower court made mistakes in the law or facts and if it acted in a way it shouldn’t have.

The ex-president’s lawyers say he shouldn’t have been sued for breaking a law that is usually used to punish companies that cheat their customers.

Mr Trump’s lawyers have disagreed with Judge Engoron’s decisions at least 10 times before, and they also challenged a gag order.

The process to appeal could take a year or more.

Mr Trump might not have to pay right away if he gives money, assets, or a bond for the amount he owes. We don’t know which path he will choose.

Mr Trump’s two grown-up sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, have to each pay $4million and are not allowed to do business in New York for the next two years. They say they did nothing wrong and supported their dad’s appeal on Monday.

The ex-president had to pay $83millionbecause he lost a case where a woman accused him of sexually abusing her. This made it even harder for him as he was already running out of money.

In May 2023, he tried to sue the New York Times but he lost. He was told to pay for the reporters’ legal costs. On Monday, reporter Susanne Craig tweeted that Mr. Trump paid $392,600 as required.

Mr. Trump is worth around$2. 6billionIt’s not clear how much money he has right now, but last year he said he has $400million in easily accessible money.

The trial in October was about deciding what punishments Mr. Trump would get because the judge had already said he did business fraud.

He has to deal with another case in New York City next month. In the court case, they say Mr. Trump lied about his business records to hide money he paid to a movie star before the 2016 election.

On Monday, the prosecutor in Manhattan asked a judge to order Mr. Trump not to speak publicly about the case.

The prosecutor’s office said they needed the measure to keep jurors, witnesses, and court staff safe from Mr. Trump’s history of saying public and upsetting things.

Steven Cheung, who works for Trump’s campaign, said that the request is against the law and violates Mr. Trump’s rights

He said again what the ex-president said, that the charges against him are unfair and are trying to stop him from beingelectedagain.

MOPANI ACQUISITION IS A SCANDAL THAT WILL CAUSE UNTOLD MISERY TO MANY IN THE DUE COURSE

0

MOPANI ACQUISITION IS A SCANDAL THAT WILL CAUSE UNTOLD MISERY TO MANY IN THE DUE COURSE.

================.

The acquisition of Mopani Copper Mines by Delta Mining Limited is a scandal that many will regret in due time. So far in this particular week, this is the most bizarre announcement that the country has heard and ought to pay attention to.

Listen to part of paragraph one of the announcement. “has agreed to acquire 51% of shareholding of Mopani for an investment total of up to $1.1 billion.”

This statement above is one that is simple but very tricky. I will try to explain it below according to my understanding.

(1) Before this transaction, Mopani was wholly owned by Zambians through ZCCM – IH.

(2) Upon acquisition, 51% of shareholding moves from the Zambian people to Delta Mining Limited. This means the control of the mines moves instantly to Delta.

(3) From now on, all future dividends will accrue to new shareholders in line with current shareholding structure.

(4) Now, what has Delta given to the existing shareholders as consideration for them to give up their controlling stake in the mine? According to the announcement as referred to above, Delta is giving a promise to invest up to a total of $1.1 billion. This is one of the most silly expressions that I have ever seen in such transactions.

My question is – once Delta invests $1.1 billion in Mopani, and the mine starts to perform, and consequently the mine starts to issue dividends, who will be receiving those dividends? Is it not Delta itself? If the answer is that it is Delta that will be receiving those dividends, how then can an investment into its own company be considered as consideration for Zambians to give up a controlling stake in the mine?

This is like someone coming to takeover your house and saying, “I will construct a wall fence to the house, and I will also put pavers and then you will remain with a servants quarter as your 41%.” And then as the original owner, you are paid nothing. All you are waiting for is that wall fence and pavers as a payment for giving up the main house, the 51%. If this this is not foolishness then I don’t know what is.

And once new tenants come in, the one who took over your house will receive rental income from the main house while you receive your rental income from the servants quarter.

We have been taken for granted on this. This is one of the most audacious Zambian company transactions I have heard about since privatization.

Let me end by reminding the investor that Article 210 of the Constitution awaits you. Even though the people know about the attempt to mutilate the constitution by making haste amendments to it, owing to the fear of what may come due to such transactions may be under way, I strongly recommend that investors should take due care.

This advise is hearty from my point of view.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

RESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LACK OF POLITICAL SENSITIVITY HAS TAKEN UPND TO AN EARLY POLITICAL GRAVE- John Noel Lungu

0

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LACK OF POLITICAL SENSITIVITY HAS TAKEN UPND TO AN EARLY POLITICAL GRAVE.

By John Noel Lungu

INTRODUCTION

It is painful to see a party that people had held in high esteem with so much faith being wasted away because of its leaders lack of strategy, political maturity ,basic sensitivity and emotional intelligence.

Most Zambians feel betrayed and taken aback by almost quarter a century on the governance and development calendar.

ANALYSIS

RESPECT ACHIEVEMENTS OF YOUR PREDECESSOR.

In as much as HH has never liked his predecessor, the President should have at least picked a few positives from President Lungu. Just like it will be unwise for the next leader to completely do away with the successes of the current administration.

For instance the issues of free education, student’s allowances, cadres, CDF etc are now sacred grounds. The next leadership should only improve on these sectors . The author for instance never supported the idea were the national cake only benefited a few party cronies at the expense of the wider population. We saw this in PF , a trend which has unfortunately continued in the UPND.

PRESIDENT’S M’MEMBE’S CAREER ON CROSSROADS.

The PF’ s popularity has deliberately been fueled by lack of political strategy as exhibited by the UPND leadership.
The UPND has inadvertently placed Zambians in a very awkward and precarious situation. Zambians have now been placed between a rock and hard place.
I want to put it on record that HH has fertilized an environment where it will be extremely difficult for Zambians to experiment with leadership, putting our brothers and sisters from the Zambezi region in a very fluid situation. This precedent has put even well meaning politicians such as the Socialist Party President in a very dicey situation. If the author was on the advisory board of the Socialist Party he would have advised President M’membe to partner with his colleagues and use the alliance to fertilize his ideas.

PRESIDENT LUNGU WAS WISE NOT TO DESTABILIZE THE NORTHERN POWER ESTABLISHMENT

A very bad precedent of hate and reverse tribalism set by the UPND leadership will be extremely difficult to delete from the majority of the Zambians.

Let us take for instance the manner in which President Lungu handled the Patriotic Front power base. President Lungu knew from the word go that he was not the favorite within the Patriotic Front structures after the passing of the PF’s founding father President Michael Sata.

President Lungu was so strategic that he never disturbed the PF establishment and only smuggled in a few Easterners in the likes of Hon Dora Siliya, Vincent Mwale etc. It is for this same reason why the Patriotic Front can’t easily replace Lungu today . That’s wisdom which unfortunately is scarce in the UPND.

Therefore, the UPND should never underestimate ECL’s capability to bounce back especially if he shows genuine reform. History is Pregnant with surprising come backs both internationally and locally. Who knew that Hon Masebo would be given another chance by the people of Chongwe? Who knew that Lula Da Silva, President of Brazil would be re-elected back in office? Wasn’t the world shocked when the son of the late Philippines dictator was elected to power?

What has cost President Hichilema is his appetite to reinvent the wheel as opposed to building on the successes of his predecessors, compounded by the know it all attitude.

There is more evidence pointing to the fact that the whole essence of the UPND seeking leadership was more motivated by self interest and aggrandizement as opposed to the national good.

This can be seen in the way contracts and strategic positions are being dished out.
Revising the age limit for employing people in the civil service is another indicator that fits into the plan that a certain tribe methodically attain full employment whilst other tribes will be lagging behind. This point is in no way providing any credence that any one tribe in Zambia should be or should have been marginalized.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S EFFORTS TO BRIDGE THE NATIONAL DIVIDE HAVE BEEN ACADEMIC.

President Hichilema’s hidden feelings about certain issues have been laid bare during some of his speeches.

Let us take for instance his utterances when he said that he doesn’t like the smell of the PF. As much as the Patriotic Front was booted out of power, not everything was bad about the PF. And not every member of the PF was bad. However, one common denominator that holds the PF together is that the majority of its members hail from the North and the East . Identifying a party with most of its members coming from certain regions as smelly is tantamount to insulting those tribes. A national leader should always refrain from making such divisive and unreconciling statements. The role of any national elected leader is to make all efforts to bridge the national divide.

GOOD POLICIES AND NOT THE PRESIDENT SHOULD LOOK AFTER ZAMBIANS.

Even the mere statement made by the Head of State that it is difficult to look after 20m people was not only misplaced but careless. Does the President know how many people are in India or China? Does the Head of State know that it is good policies and institutions that run countries rather than the effort of any one individual?

A lot of political and economic discomfort was experienced by a proportionately small population of the country that was marginalized. This situation has had a serious impact on the economic, political and social landscape of the country, leading to political revolutions in the past.
.
Zambians hoped to see meaningful change. What has been disappointing about the change is that the UPND in its miscalculation has opted to marginalize a bigger portion of the population beating all its predecessors. This scenario is what has given political impetus to the opposition.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAP INTO SOME OF THE FINEST MINDS IN THE COUNTRY.

The author tends to agree with sentiments issued by certain authorities in good governance such as that of Mr John Sangwa SC stating that a lot of people that have the brains to run the country are outside. The UPND should have used the privilege to employ people like Mr John Sangwa, Ms Linda Kasonde, Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa in strategic positions rather than confide in the capacity of party members. The absence of the aforementioned independent minds has taken away sufficient flavour to the governance metabolism of the country.
In as much as it is not a bad idea to consult veteran politicians like Dr Vernon Mwaanga etc it was going to be more valuable to consult fresh and forward looking minds….

CONCLUSION.

The birth of the UKA alliance is very much welcome. However, the author is more interested in seeing the agenda of the alliance more as opposed to seeing who is going to emerge as its captain.

FRED M’MEMBE SHOULD STOP LYING ABOUT THE MEALIE-MEAL PRICE IN MILENGE- UPND

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRED M’MEMBE SHOULD STOP LYING ABOUT THE MEALIE-MEAL PRICE IN MILENGE

February 26th, 2024

We applaud Milenge Town Council Chairperson Clement Mwila who has come forward to dispell assertions by overzealous Socialist Party president Fred M’membe for lying that mealie-meal in the area was being sold at K 850 per 25 kg bag.

Councilor Mwila says it was a lie by Mr M’membe to insinuate that the staple food in Milenge was being sold at K 850 when the actual price ranges between K 345 and K350.

The civic leader says the opposition leader would do well to verify his information before issuing any public statement as that amounts to deliberately misleading the public.

It is worth noting that any deliberate attempt to mislead the public on a matter of national and security importance such as the price of mealie-meal is an offence according to the Penal code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Section 67 (1) of the penal code provides that any person who publishes whether orally or in writing or otherwise any statement rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb public peace knowing or having reason to believe that such statements, rumour or report is false, is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for 3 years.

The UPND finds it sickening to note the level of excitement by the opposition with regards to the seemingly high cost of living in the country.

We wonder what would warrant a citizen to harbour such hatred for one’s country to an extent of wishing the nation and its citizens harm.

What happened to the values of patriotism which demands that our first obligation is to the well-being of our country and its people that people should now celebrate the rise in the cost of living.

The UPND and its Government is alive to the fact that the cost of living in the country is steadily rising but we can assure the nation that everything is being done to contain the situation even in the midst of a looming drought due poor rains.

It is a pity that opposition leaders such as Mr M’membe are taking pride in deliberately misleading the nation for the sake of political mileage and expedience. Zambians are not gullible and are seeing through the cheap opposition attempts that have failed before and we can assure them that they will fail again.

Zambians know and understand that the challenges that the country is going through are both historical as well as natural and that the UPND led administration is laying a strong foundation in resolving them.

We appeal to Zambians not to be hoodwinked by opportunists that have failed to provide any alternative economic turnaround policies necessary in the country’s socio-economic development. The UPND and its New Dawn administration stands ready to make sure that the anticipated crop failure is mitigated and no Zambian shall go to bed without a meal.

Leave the doomsayers alone as you join the government in providing workable solutions in the midst of challenging natural difficulties . Together we shall pull through.

RESPONSE TO FRED M’MEMBE’S BASELESS CLAIMS OF CORRUPTION WITHOUT ANY GRAIN OF TRUTH- Mark Simuwe

RESPONSE TO FRED M’MEMBE’S BASELESS CLAIMS OF CORRUPTION WITHOUT ANY GRAIN OF TRUTH

By Mark Simuwe.

Fred M’membe has continued with his malice and lopsided reasoning to deceive citizens after his party got bashed in all recent by-elections.

Clearly, Fred is failing to persuade citizens . Unfortunately, he cannot listen to himself .

UPND has so far won about 44 by – elections out of the 47 by-elections held in two years .

Fred will never tell you how bad his political record has been with Socialist party , in the past two years , and he will never tell citizens why they are refusing to believe in his deceit .

Perhaps dealing with his tantrums , one at a time , will suffice :

CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

Fred is deliberately trying to deceive citizens and make them forget about the recently published corruption perceptions index survey by the Transparency International which shows that the fight against corruption under the UPND leadership has improved by a wide margin , after years of struggling to fight corruption under the PF .

Fred is trying to change facts through deceit .

Fred M’membe is back with his blackmail by alleging corruption without stating who stole what and from who ?

As usual , in his Post-newspaper blackmail behavior ,Fred has continued fishing in the dark, trying to be relevant using irrelevant and lopsided information.

Just like the Swedish Ambassador, Fred has failed to demonstrate corruption activities and is busy trying to hoodwink unsuspecting citizens without stating who stole what and from who .

The claims by Fred are in conflict with available researched data on Zambia especially in the area of the fight against corruption.

Just like Fred is failing to convincingly raise alarm on corruption, by failing to cite who stole what and from who , the Socialist Party leaders like Dr Musumali are busy swimming in Fred M’membe’s muddy waters of propaganda.

Clearly, Fred has no message for citizens, as I have continued to state.

As indicated by the UKA ( UKWA) party, Fred is not saleable and he has never been . UKA(UKWA) Party went on further to state ,” it is good that Fred is not part of UKA because had he been part of it , there could have been more confusion, says Saboi,” end of quote .

From being bashed in the previous by-elections , Fred has now turned to continued hallucinations and propaganda with his colleague Dr Musumali , who alleged that UPND wants to be entrenched by creating by-elections .

What Dr Musumali is missing is that councilors with qualifications have opted to be recruited under the Ministry of Education because under the PF to which Fred M’membe belonged , there was employment freeze.

Fred also made reference to Hon Kakubo in his propaganda conversation of corruption ; to date , Fred has failed to state what corruption activity or offence Hon Kakubo committed .
Further , for avoidance of doubt , assuming Kakubo committed an offence ; Fred has not told us whether the alleged private transaction reported involved public funds, and what was stolen and from who !

Interestingly , UPND is not like Fred’s PF where people were found with Ukwa bags full of money which they could not even bank .

Additionally, citizens should be reminded that UPND has scored on the Transparency International survey on corruption perceptions index by four points , and this successful record in less than two , must certainly shame Fred .

Further ,under the UPND , Zambia has been able successfully raise revenue of over K122billion in 2023 , against the target of about k113billion . This is a successful record which was attained through prudence in the collection of revenue , which revenue under the PF , went into packets of those caught with UKWA bags , and being in possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime .

Clearly , Fred is unable to use empirical evidence to pin down the UPND agenda on the fight against corruption.

Fred should also disclose why he travels out everytime a by -election is announced. Fred himself has allegedly been receiving money from those he dupes using his window dressing socialist messages. Sadly , Fred does not believe in socialism because this is the man who ran a capitalist postnewspaper .

Fred even got cornered by Zambia Revenue Authority ( ZRA ) after the post allegedly failed to remit ‘pay as you earn’, among other taxes ; a clear anti-socialist behavior – because that money could have helped the poor.

Besides , Socialism believes in profit sharing, yet Fred evaded that . He should come out clean on this Postnewspaper ZRA battle .

TRANSPARENCY IN FERTILIZER TENDER BIDDING

For those who may not know , there are many types of tender bidding allowed at law .

Without wasting time for readers , let me simply itemize some of the types of legal tender bidding in the procurement process for the purpose of this article , without defining each of them in the meantime . And government decides to use any of them :

1.Open tendering
2.Online bidding
3. Negotiated tendering
4. Academic bidding
Bid
5. Request for quotations
6. Two-stage tendering
7. Selective tendering
8. Auction bids
9. Closed bidding
10. Contract

11. Civil works procurement
12. Combinatorial auction
13. Contract closeout
14. Evaluation of bids

Note that all the above are legal and government decides which one to use as long as the procurement process is not rigid or statute bound on the one used .

Fred has failed to demonstrate what law has been broken in the procurement process because there are many types of tender bidding which government uses .

We challenge him to demonstrate which law has been broken .

In trying to be relevant to the Swedish Ambassador, Fred is discussing unverified information which does not make sense .

COST OF LIVING

Fred has also failed to demonstrate that the challenges currently faced are as a result of Fred and his colleagues reckless borrowing. They ran down the economy . They found mealie meal at k37 and took it to k280 ; without shame they want to be angels today . They found fuel prices at around k5 but took it K18 and they can today come to mock citizens as if they have solutions to their mess . They found Kwacha at K5 , but took it to K 23 , the highest percentage ever from independence , because it means this was over 400% increase .

MINES THAT ALMOST RAN AWAY

Fred is at it again here . He does not know why mines retrenched workers to reduce their expenditure under the PF . Clearly , they reduced on production of copper because increase in copper production requires pumping in so much money , yet mines were no longer willing to invest more money due to policy inconsistency .

Insecurity grew under the PF that workers in mines lost jobs through retrenchments.

Fred’s observation on mining investment is disjointed because he has also failed to demonstrate which mine is on tax holiday. Further , it is the investment in the mining sector which has improved our Kwacha .

To the contrary , Fred failed to attend to statutory obligations in his Postnewspaper , and is a wrong person to talk about mines . When you listen to Fred , you would think he is saying something when he is saying nothing . The same mines Fred is referring to once gave him contracts and advertised in the Postnewspaper . Let him tell us how he lost the contracts .

He supported bad mining policies under the PF and praised the mines . It was okay with the mines at that time because it worked for him . Today , he wants to present that mines are not contributing enough . Really ?

Fred has no moral right to comment on his own mess under the PF . If Fred was paying the right taxes and not failing to remit under the Postnewspaper , citizens could have used that money to service the loans .

Gone Are The Days When We Used To Say, I Will Have My Day In Court, Now, It’s About What Those In Power Want And Not Justice- Chilufya Tayali

0

EEP President Chilufya Tayali

GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN WE USED TO SAY, I WILL HAVE MY DAY IN COURT, NOW, IT’S ABOUT WHAT THOSE IN POWER WANT AND NOT JUSTICE. @20:00hrs

What we knew, in the past, was that, once a judgment is made by the Supreme Court, and now the Concourt, it means the case is closed, you can’t go back to it, but the New Dawn Govt has come to teach us that judgments can be reviewed until they get their intended results.

We will, now, have editions in judgments, like 1st Edition Judgment on Lungu’s eligibility, 2nd Edition judgment on Miles Sampa takeover of PF, and so on and so forth. But, isn’t that an embarrassment to our judiciary?

A big cases happens before in public where officers spend the whole night counting dollars in millions, but the courts say, it is okay to try such a case in private, all the public has to hear is the outcome. Where is the adage of, justice must not only be done but seen to be done.

You have a case where the Magistrate says, “Since you have failed to tell us where you got these properties, then it is reasonable for us to conclude that it is proceeds of crime, but no mention of any possible crime(s).

Who knows maybe this woman was sleeping with the Chinese but since the husband is Court, she is scared to explain? Failure to explain doesn’t automatically become a crime. Show us some possibilities of a crime or abuse of office.

We also have cases where the State has no shame of inflating property values and lie before the courts just to secure convictions. Where is the integrity of our law enforcers.

As a politician, there is no presumption of innocence, you are guilty before you are even arrested and the Magistrate or Judge, knows too well, not to go against those in power especially our Most Power DPP, otherwise he/she will find itself in rural areas and where possible demoted.

A business man supporting a politician is guilty of whatever crime that the DPP or the DG at ACC or DEC can cook up to seize his properties and take him or her on a long trial.

These days it only takes a cadre to go and complain before the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC) that the Judge sneezed in the middle of a court session and that Judge will be called to before the Commission, in secret, and next, the public will be notified that, the President has fired him or her.

This is not healthy for our Country because we should have confidence in our judiciary, such that, we can confidently say, “I will have my day in Court”. Not want we are seeing, this is not democracy.

Zambia presents its case to the ICJ which is holding hearings on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.

●Mr. Marshall Muchende submitted that Zambia recognises the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self determination

Zambia representatives appeated on 26th February 2024 and submitted at the International Court of Justice at the Hague in the Netherlands

However, Vice President W.K Mutale Nalumango had claimeds was not particpating in the proceedings.

ICJ is holding hearings on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.

Hearings into the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of Palestine are separate from the genocide case brought by South Africa.

Below is a report on the Statement given by Zambia.

Press Statement
For Immediate Release
26th February 2024
The Hague, Netherlands

ZAMBIA DELIVERS AN ORAL STATEMENT BEFORE THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE IN THE PROCEEDINGS CONCERNING THE REQUEST FOR AN ADVISORY OPINION ON THE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES ARISING FROM THE POLICIES AND PRACTICES OF ISRAEL IN THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY, INCLUDING EAST JERUSALEM

The Republic of Zambia has made an oral submission at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) before a panel of fifteen (15) Judges, following a request for an Advisory Opinion by the United Nations General Assembly, concerning the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. Mr. Marshal Muchende, Solicitor General, SC, delivered the Statement on behalf of the Republic of Zambia. He was flanked by H.E Mr. Sylvester Mundanda, Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to the BENELUX countries, and Senior Government officials.

Mr. Muchende submitted that Zambia recognises the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self determination as well as the legitimate security needs of the people of Israel.

Mr. Muchende further submitted that both Israel and Palestine have a duty to respect international human rights law and International humanitarian law, adding that any recourse to the conflict should not be one that puts the blame squarely on one party, but advances a negotiated solution that culminates in a two-state solution.

The Solicitor General stated that Zambia’s support for Palestinian People’s rights to self determination remains steadfast and echoes its consistent position within the United Nations. Mr. Muchende, however, said it is imperative to approach this issue with a comprehensive and balanced perspective.

He further stated that Zambia believes that any declaration, addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, must acknowledge the serious considerations of the difficult situation that both parties find themselves in, as they strive to defend the respective rights of their people.

Mr. Muchende submitted that Zambia notes that there has been an argument that negotiations between the two parties have been ineffective hence resorting to advisory opinions. Therefore, Zambia respectfully submitted that the Israelis, Palestinians, Regional States, the broader community and indeed the UN Security Council should first consider the reasons why the negotiations failed in the past and address that issue before resorting to a solution that seeks to bypass the agreed upon negotiations.

Mr. Muchende also submitted that Zambia proposes that the final determination in this matter would be for the two parties to resolve their dispute through settlement means of their choice, which is negotiations, adding that the just and sustainable two-state solution cannot be imposed from the outside through an advisory opinion.

Mr. Muchende concluded by reiterating Zambia’s call for relentless efforts aimed at achieving peace in the Middle East region, based on the principles of the two-state solution.

MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES US$4 MILLION AUTOMOTIVE WORKSHOP AT NORTHERN TECHNICAL COLLEGE

The Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati, launched the Automotive and Heavy Equipment Repair Extension Workshop worth US$4 million at the Northern Technical College (NORTEC) in Ndola. This project will provide students with infrastructure to enhance the college’s business enterprise in automotive servicing and repair.

During the launch, Minister Mutati praised the project’s development as it will help students prepare for the World Skills Africa Competition, which will be held in Zambia’s Livingstone next year. The facility is one of the project outputs of the Zambia Industrial Training Academy (ZAMITA).

Mr. Mutati emphasized the need to send six lecturers abroad to advance their skills in learning institutions further. The project will create new opportunities for the college and improve students’ abilities and effectiveness in the global economy.

United Nations Industry Development Representative William Goldsmith hailed the modern vocational training facility, saying that it would equip young people with the necessary skills for success in the global economy. The project’ symbolized the shared commitment of fostering sustainable economic growth and a brighter future for Zambians.

NORTEC Principal Martin Kasonso expressed appreciation at the government’s support for the learning institution. The project has a capacity-building target of training 500 vulnerable youths from rural communities. The project’s standalone workshop extension for light and heavy-duty vehicles will strengthen the college’s engineering and technical training programs.

The refurbished facility will enhance vocational training programs, provide additional coursework, and equip students with industry-standard tools to prepare them for the demands of the job market. The project will create new opportunities and provide unique experiences for students to engage with, ultimately raising their competitiveness in the job market.

Senegal leader opens talks to end crisis after poll delay

0

By JOHN WESSELS (AFP)
Senegal’s President Macky Sall was on Monday due to begin talks to end weeks of political turmoil and decide a date for a presidential poll he delayed but major political and social stakeholders are snubbing the event.

Sall has faced public outcry and growing calls to set an election date after he abruptly delayed the February 25 vote, triggering one of the West African country’s worst crises in decades.

Sall has put off the decision until after talks with political and civil society figures from Monday, with the hope of reaching an agreement by late Tuesday.

Sall proposed that all the candidates in the presidential race should be included in the talks, as well as those who had been disqualified from standing.

He also invited civil society, religious and community leaders to the meeting, due to start 4:00 pm (local time and GMT) in the new town of Diamniadio, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the capital Dakar.

But 16 of the 19 candidates approved by the Constitutional Council to contest the election have said they will not take part.

Former prime minister Idrissa Seck also declined the invitation, reducing the number of qualified candidates willing to participate in the dialogue to just two.

The Aar Sunu Election (Protect Our Election) collective of over 100 civil society groups and personalities against the election delay also said they were boycotting the talks.

‘Consensus’

The collective forms part of a widespread movement calling for a vote before April 2, when Sall’s term in office expires.

Some fear a possible power vacuum if Sall were to leave the presidency before a successor was installed.

Others have accused him of playing for time, either to stay in power beyond his mandate or to benefit his political allies who fear defeat at the ballot box.

Sall has said he does not think a vote will be possible before his departure at the beginning of April.

Some fear a possible power vacuum if Sall were to leave the presidency before a successor was installed. By JOHN WESSELS (AFP)
Those opposed to his election dialogue are concerned it could be a means of starting the process from scratch, including a re-examination of candidacies.

Sall, who has been in power since 2012, is not running for a third term and has insisted his mandate will end as planned.

He has reiterated that he wants dialogue to promote peace and reconciliation after tensions flared during the pre-electoral process.

He says the proposed dialogue is aimed at reaching a “consensus” both on a new date and to determine what will happen after April 2.

Either the participants will reach an agreement and Sall will announce a new election date, or he will refer the matter to the Constitutional Council to have the final say, he said last week.

Chain of events

The election postponement plunged traditionally stable Senegal into turmoil and sparked unrest that has left four people dead.

The Constitutional Council, the country’s top constitutional body, overturned the delay and called for the vote to be organised “as soon as possible”.

One of the main beneficiaries of a fresh start to the electoral process would be Karim Wade, a former minister and son of ex-president Abdoulaye Wade.

The opposition denounced the last-minute delay of the February 25 election as a ‘constitutional coup’. By JOHN WESSELS (AFP)
The dispute over his disqualification from the presidential race triggered a chain of events, which led to the eventual postponement of the election.

A spokesman from Wade’s party confirmed that a representative would be taking part in the president’s dialogue.

Sall said he delayed the election over disputes about the disqualification of potential candidates and over concerns about a return to unrest seen in 2021 and last year.

But the opposition denounced the last-minute move as a “constitutional coup”.

In an apparent step towards pacifying public opinion, Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar reopened on Monday after being closed for months following political unrest.

Hundreds of imprisoned opponents have also been released in the last 10 days.

East Africa looks to Tanzania’s mega project to plug regional electricity gap

0

East Africa’s electricity supply is set for a boost once the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) goes online.

At the 16th Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers on Energy held in Arusha, on February 13, the ministers said the 2,115MW, $2.9 billion project across the Rufiji River will be a game-changer in the region.

The project is part of Tanzania’s power master plan, which aims to interconnect the grids of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.

“Energy plays a critical role in industrial development and investment promotion… and this project is a milestone that will reduce the deficit of electricity not only in Tanzania but in the entire region,” said Shaib Hassan Kaduara, Minister of Water, Energy and Minerals of Zanzibar.

The World Bank says that one out of two people in Sub-Saharan Africa lacked access to electricity in 2023.

According to the International Energy Agency, more than 800 million people — 11 percent of the world’s population – still live without reliable electricity. Some 600 million of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa and about 82 million are in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“Setbacks were observed in almost 80 percent of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, notably in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda,” says the report.

At the sectoral meeting, partner states reported that investments in wind and solar energy infrastructure were also underway, from Burundi’s solar mini grids to Kenya’s wind and solar projects, all aimed at increasing renewable energy contributions to the national grids.

The region has a total power supply installed capacity of 7,381.67MW while the total system peak demand stands at 4,811.2MW. The regional per capita electricity consumption was reported to range from 25 kilowatt hours in Burundi to 153-kilowatt hours in Kenya.

“As a region, we must focus on sufficient, reliable and cost-effective energy to meet our development needs, and in this regard, there is a need to come up with solutions that will guide the sector,” said Annette Ssemuwemba, EAC Deputy Secretary-General in charge of Customs, Trade and Monetary Affairs.

Rwanda and Tanzania reported increased investment in solar energy projects, while Uganda reported that it is focusing on solar energy deployment for rural electrification.

The Kenyan grid is interconnected with the Ethiopian grid through a 1,058 km line. Further regional interconnections will be achieved through an interconnector with Tanzania and a second line with Uganda. These projects will facilitate the creation of a regional power market.

The report also evaluated green energy projects, with only Kenya successfully launching geothermal energy projects. In Kenya, geothermal resource potential is estimated to be 10,000MW, but the currently installed capacity is 985MW, contributing about 30 percent of the total electricity installed capacity.

Installed green energy constitutes 78 percent (2,398 MW) of the total generation capacity of 3,322MW and above 90 percent by dispatch.

Kenya oil dealers in panic as Uganda picks Tanga port over Mombasa

Kenyan oil dealers are in a crisis mode after Uganda stuck to its guns and started talks with Tanzania to import its fuel through the Port of Tanga instead of the Port of Mombasa following a spat with Nairobi.

Uganda had initially announced that it was in talks with Tanzania to use the Port of Dar es Salaam to import its fuel after Kenya refused to give it concessions to use its pipeline.

But the road distance between Dar es Salaam and Kampala is 1,715.6km, which is 49.5 percent longer than the distance of 1,147.6km between Mombasa and Kampala.

This shorter distance means that Uganda saves up to $35 per cubic meter by using Mombasa instead of Dar. The Business Daily understands Kenyan State officials – as well as oil executives in both Kenya and Uganda – had earlier believed that Uganda was bluffing about shifting its import route to Tanzania. This is because, besides being cheaper, the Mombasa port is faster and more efficient than the Dar es Salaam port.

But this has changed after it emerged last week that Uganda and Tanzania are locked in talks that will see the former import fuel via the Port of Tanga, which is far closer to Kampala. Tanga is the oldest port in East Africa and is the second largest in Tanzania. While it’s far smaller than the Dar and Mombasa ports, Tanzania has been boosting its capacity to handle more cargo in recent years.

“The mood in the industry has been that the Tanzania talk by Uganda was just posturing to push Kenya to give it concessions. But this has changed completely because Uganda is now serious and is close to reaching an agreement with Tanzania to use the Tanga port,” said a source privy to the matter.

“Tanga is not as far (from Kampala) as Dar and therefore the price difference with Mombasa will not be as big. We also understand that Uganda could be given some relief by Tanzania to close the gap,” said the source. Uganda currently buys 90 percent of its fuel via Kenya and 10 percent through Tanzania.

The Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya (Poak), a lobby for independent oil dealers, says that it would deal a huge blow to local OMCs if Uganda actualises the plan.

“If Uganda indeed moves to the Tanzania route a lot of local oil companies will really suffer because they will lose their biggest market,” said Poak chairman Martin Chomba.

About a third of all fuel imported into Kenya is destined for the transit market, translating to an average of 200 million litres monthly. Mr Chomba said that a lot of especially small dealers rely on this transit market and would likely be forced to close shop.

He further said that Kenya would lose a key source of foreign exchange. Oil dealers are paid for their fuel exports in US dollars. Uganda last year said it imports fuel worth $2 billion through Kenya annually.

“The transit market is a key source of forex for the country and this would really affect dollar inflows,” said Mr Chomba.

State-owned Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) would also emerge as a major loser. This is because, without nearly a third of the transit market, it would lose millions of shillings in depot tariffs, which are a major source of revenue for KPC. Currently, oil firms evacuating fuel from KPC’s Nairobi fuel depot pay Ksh2,582.72 per cubic metre.

This will further rise to Ksh2,791.85 per cubic metre in July.

The origin of this latest spat between Kenya and Uganda comes following the decision by Kampala last year to designate the State-owned Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) as the importer of all its fuel for supply to private oil dealers.

Unoc subsequently applied to Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) in September 2023 to be registered as an OMC in Kenya, which would allow it to import and export fuel like other OMCs and utilize Kenya Pipeline Company’s (KPC) pipeline.

Epra however declined UNOC’s application because UNOC could not substantiate the requisite annual sales volumes of 6.6 million litres of either super petrol, Automotive Gasoil (diesel), and/or Jet A1/kerosene in Kenya.

Uganda has since then sued Kenya at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ)

Zimbabwe targets recruiting 7 000 teachers as thousands flee country

0

The Zimbabwean government says its targeting the recruitment of 7000 teachers to reduce shortages being experienced in schools as an estimated 4,000 teachers leave the country annually for greener pastures abroad.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo confirmed the recruitment drive after meeting with representatives of teachers to discuss their welfare.

“We have decentralized the recruitment of teachers starting January 2024 and we have recruited about 2 000 teachers so far. These were recruited in all the ten provinces,” he said, adding the recruitment will be done in phases.

“The Ministry, together with the Public Service Commission, have identified areas that need teachers that include Gokwe North and South, Kwekwe and Mberengwa.” Moyo said.

The shortage of teachers has resulted in a high teacher-pupil ratio, with some classes having more than 60 students, affecting the pass rates as the teachers will not be able to cater for the needs of all the students.

Moyo said the shortage of teachers in schools does not mean that there are no qualified people but is due to budgetary constraints.

Speaking to the Global Press Journal, Raymond Majongwe, secretary general of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), estimates that in 2023, over 20,000 teachers quit their jobs for other professions while remaining in the country.

“As far as the PTUZ statistics are concerned, between 2022 and 2023, we lost between 1,000 and 1,800 teachers who left the union for prospects in various countries,” Majongwe added.

Obert Masaraure, who leads the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe is on record saying 4,000 teachers leave the country annually.

“Teachers are leaving in droves. Those who are still in Zimbabwe are desperately searching for exit routes,” Masaraure was quoted saying by Global Press Journal.

Teachers in Zimbabwe earn a starting salary of US$164 (paid in RTGS and subject to rate changes) plus a monthly US dollar allowance all civil servants receive.

Last year in July the government increased this civil servant allowance from 250 to 300 US dollars (but even that is also taxed, effectively leaving US$250) and teachers say it’s not enough to meet their basic needs given that the cost of a family basket of six stood at US$540.

France reiterates its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western

By RFI

France’s foreign minister Stephane Séjourne has reiterated Paris’ “clear and constant” support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara, during a visit to Rabat.

French foreign minister Stéphane Séjourné, who arrived in Rabat on Sunday evening, said that he had been “personally” commissioned by President Emmanuel Macron to work towards closer relations with Morocco.

“This visit is a major step towards opening a new chapter in the relationship between our two countries”, a diplomatic source explained.

During a press conference on Monday, alongside his counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the French foreign minister said of the Western Sahara: “This is an existential issue for Morocco. We know that […]. It is now time to move forward. I will see to it personally”, also announcing his desire to build a partnership with Morocco for the next 30 years.

Diplomatic tensions
The last visit by a French foreign minister dates back more than a year. In December 2022, Catherine Colonna went to Rabat to announce the end of visa restrictions to France. But there was no significant improvement between the two countries in the following weeks.

A vote by the European Parliament in January 2023 condemning the deterioration in press freedom in Morocco added to the diplomatic tensions.

In response, Morocco terminated the mission of its ambassador in Paris.

names woman former journalist as ambassador to France
Relations seemed to have reached an dead end until the French ambassador to Morocco issued a public mea culpa in October. A new Moroccan ambassador to France was then appointed.

‘New political agenda’
On the French side, the revelations by the Forbidden Stories media group, according to which the phone numbers of Emmanuel Macron and ministers were targeted in 2019 by Morocco, were not much appreciated.

In September, a new controversy arose when France offered aid to Morocco, hit by an earthquake, which Rabat ignored.

Séjourné’s visit is therefore a first step “towards a new political agenda, in all areas, with shared priorities”, said a diplomatic source.

Barotseland Nationalists Youth alliance responds to inspector general of Police Graphel Musamba

IG GRAPHEL MUSAMBA SHOULD STOP CRIMINALIZING THE BAROTSELAND ISSUE BECAUSE IT IS PURELY CIVIL AND BORDERS ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATED BY THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT.
….. Barotseland Nationalists Youth alliance responds toinspector general of Police

26th February, 2024.

Greetings:

Fellow countrymen and women, we, the Barotseland Nationalists Youth Alliance, have noted with great concern the threats from the Inspector General of Zambia Police , Mr Graphel Musamba , who has warned that pursuing self-determination is criminal and treasonous .

Our dear Barotseland Nationals, , We find it un ethical to respond to Mr Musamba because he was warning a no body . He was using indirect language, keeping us guessing whether he was referring to Umodzi Kumawa , Barotseland Nationalists Youth Alliance,

Linyungandambo,BFNA , or the Barotse Royal Establishment who have hoisted a UNPO flag at Naliele palace and who have also submitted the Privy Council Resolutions about Self-determination of Barotseland to Mr Hakainde Hichilema the president of Zambia.
In his press release, Mr Musamba stated that ” With immediate effect, police will begin arresting people promoting and inciting any form of uprising or secession in any territory considered to be part of the unitary state of Zambia.

Assuming that the Inspector General of Zambia police was referring to the people of Barotseland, then he is poking his nose into matters beyond him.

Looking at Barotseland from a broader spectrum, namely, biblically, rationally, politically, cultural, economically and legally, we note that Barotseland was destined to be ruled by her own people and not to be occupied illegally by Zambia as a new found land without people.

Graphel Musamba should know that Zambia is a signatory to the UN Charter on Human Rights which recognizes self-determination as a Human Right . Barotseland has a right to Self-determination; by virtue of that , they are free to determine their political status and freely pursue their economic , social and cultural development. The resolutions to separate Barotseland from Zambia which the Privy Council deliberated upon are within the framework of law.

Therefore, threatening to arrest or kill people who are pursuing their rights to Self-determination is violating international law and it can attract sanctions on Zambia , the country which is already struggling even without sanctions.

Since Mr Musamba is a police officer who understands law better than anybody , let him influence his government to compensate more than 100 Barotse who were arrested in 2013 and released on nolle prosequi and the families of those killed by the same police he is in charge of. Not being on nolle prosequi for 11 years . The IG should go back to court and inform the Zambian judiciary that police has failed to find evidence and not promising the world to arrest a group of Barotse and again end up with another nolle prosequi. In fact , the Inspector General of Zambia police is not intending to arrest but to kill us, we have received several death threats from Zambia intelligence officers. This time , if you kill the Barotse, you will be dragged to the international criminal court, no jokes.

Fellow countrymen and women,as Barotseland Nationalists Youth Alliance,we do not accept the misleading interpretation that the future position of Barotseland within Zambia alluded to unitarism .The Barotseland Agreement 1964 just intended to preserve Barotse autonomy, but if the interpretation of the Barotseland Agreement is that it made Barotseland part of Zambia, then it is essential to realize that the same agreement did not enter into force, and according to the law of treaties, the agreement that did not enter into force is not legally binding, besides, its abrogation means rejection of Barotseland and the corallary of abrogation is Barotseland independence.
As we conclude, the Nigerian political analyst , in his book , ” Politics of collaboration” 1810 to 1914 states that Barotseland emerged in the 20 th century with more sovereignty than any other group in the sub – continent , what he called Barotse Social Order.

The foreign office, London instructions to Coryndon No. 184 of 1 st May 1897 acknowledge Barotse as a nation . Furthermore, the pre-colonial and colonial era speaks volumes about the sovereignty of Barotse. The secretary of state for colonies , sir P. Cunliffe Lister wrote in December 1931 as follows:

” The intention of the agreement of 1900 must be kept clearly in view. There can be no doubt that the essence of this agreement was that the Barotse nation should preserve their individuality , their territory and self government.

if the IG feels Zambia is holding on to Barotseland legally, we challenge him to tell his Boss, President Hakainde Hichilema to sign the permanent court of arbitration forms which are being prepared by our international lawyers so that the matter of Barotseland can be determined by an independent and impartial Court.

Finally, we challenge Mr Graphel Musamba to arrest the Barotse or even kill them and prove to the world that self determination is a crime according to the penal code of Zambia. We also challenge Zambia to withdraw her signature from the UN Charter on Human Rights, if at all self determination is a crime.

Thank you very much. May the Almighty God bless our King.

Owner of Instagram Meta gathers team to prevent voters being duped by AI

0

A new team to be formed by Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, to tackle the problem of fake AI content circulating during the European Union elections in June.

It is worried about how generative AI technology, which can create fake videos, images, and audio, might be used to deceive voters.

On the same day, Home Secretary James Cleverly said that some people will use fake AI technology to try to affect a general election.

However, a person who knows a lot about the industry said the plans might not be strong enough.

The BBC asked Meta if they have plans for the upcoming elections in the UK and US.

The announcement comes two weeks after Meta made a promise with other big tech companies to work together to stop harmful content.

The European Parliament will have a vote from June 6 to June 9 this year.

TikTok said it will add “Election Centres” in different languages within its app for each EU country to provide trustworthy information.

Marco Pancini, who oversees EU affairs for the company, said in a blog post that they will create a special center for dealing with elections in the EU. This center will watch out for possible problems and take action to fix them in their apps and technology right away. The company also owns WhatsApp and Threads.

“From 2016 until now, we have put more than $20 billion into making things safe and secure. We also have four times as many people, around 40,000, working on this. ”

This means there are 15,000 people who look at posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in over 70 languages, including all 24 official EU languages.

He said this meant that experts from different teams in the company, like engineering, data science, and law, would work together.

‘Serious restrictions’

However, Deepak Padmanabhan from Queen’s University Belfast, who has written a paper on elections and AI, says that the announcement has some problems.

“He said that a lot of its planned strategy doesn’t have much substance. ”

He doesn’t like the way Meta plans to handle AI-generated images, and thinks it might not work.

He wanted to know what would happen if computer-made pictures showed protesters and police fighting.

“He said it’s difficult to prove the picture is fake because we need to make sure the attack didn’t happen. It’s hard for technology or experts to do. ”

“How can any technology decide if this is fake or real. ”

“So, we’re not sure how well Meta’s generative AI strategy will work – but there are definitely some problems. ”

Meta is working with 26 fact-checking organizations in the European Union. They are adding three more partners from Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia to help deal with the threat.

These organizations are not supposed to handle content that tries to stop people from voting. They are supposed to stop false information from spreading, even if it’s made using AI.

Mr Pancini said that these posts will have warning labels and won’t be shown as much. Also, they won’t be allowed in ads.

Ads cannot say the vote is not real, say they won before they did, or question how the election works.

He said the company’s work was a result of working together, and they would need to continue working together in the future.

He said that because AI-generated content is everywhere on the internet, we are also collaborating with other companies in our industry to create rules and standards.

This project is not just for one company. It will need a lot of work from different businesses, the government, and the public.

Navalny was to be released in prisoner swap before his death – Ally

0

Alexei Navalny was supposed to be released in exchange for another prisoner when he died, as said by his friend Maria Pevchikh.

She said the Russian opposition leader was going to be traded for Vadim Krasikov, a Russian hitman who is in prison for life in Germany.

Two Americans in Russia were also going to be included in the agreement, according to Ms.

She said that talks will be finished on February 15th.

The day after, Mr Navalny passed away in his prison cell in Siberia. He was serving a 19-year sentence for charges that many people believed were brought against him for political reasons. The 47-year-old got sick after going for a walk, according to prison officials.

In a video on Mr. Navalny’s YouTube channel, Ms. Pevchikh, who leads his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), said they had been talking about exchanging prisoners for two years. She said that when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, it was clear that Putin would do anything. She also said that Mr. Navalny needed to be released from jail no matter what and right away.

Ms Pevchik said Mr. Navalny was going to be released because of a humanitarian swap, and American and German officials were part of the negotiations.

She said they finally made a solid plan to exchange prisoners in December.

Vadim Krasikov, a Russian man, was found guilty of shooting a former Chechen rebel leader in the head in Germany in 2019. He was going to be included in the agreement.

Two people from the US who are currently being detained in Russia are also going to be traded, Ms. Pevchikh said, but she did not say who they are.

In February, President Putin said he was talking to the US about releasing American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who is in jail for spying.

President Putin suggested that Russia would welcome a person who, for patriotic reasons, killed a criminal in a European city during the conflicts in the Caucasus. This almost certainly refers to Krasikov.

Ms Pevchikh says that Russian President Vladimir Putin changed his decision about the deal at the very end. She said he didn’t want Navalny to be free. Since there was a tentative agreement for Krasikov’s release, Mr Putin decided to get rid of the bargaining chip and offer someone else instead.

“Ms Pevchikh said that Putin hates Navalny very much. ” “He knows that Navalny could have beaten him. ”

President Putin used to work for the KGB. He often says he will do something, but then does the opposite.

He and his government have been following this policy for almost 25 years.

Before Russia attacked Ukraine, President Putin and some Russian officials kept saying they did not plan to invade the country.

We don’t know what happened to Navalny in prison, but the Kremlin has a history of pretending to negotiate for someone’s release without actually planning to let them go.

Ms Pevchikh’s video got hundreds of thousands of views within an hour of being published.

The Kremlin has not responded yet to the claims made by Ms Pevchikh. President Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, has said before that the accusations of government involvement in Navalny’s death are “ridiculous”.

At first, the authorities didn’t want to give Navalny’s body to his mother. They finally agreed to do so eight days after he died.

On Monday, Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yarmish wrote on social media that his friends are searching for a place where people can gather to say goodbye to him later this week.

The government will keep a close watch on this event, if it’s allowed to happen.

A group that protects people’s rights said that 400 Russians were arrested all over the country for putting flowers to honor Navalny after he died.

BE PRACTICAL, PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING, THIS CAN TRIGGER CIVIL UNREST, M’MEMBE TELLS UPND

BE PRACTICAL, PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING, THIS CAN TRIGGER CIVIL UNREST, M’MEMBE TELLS UPND

Socialist Party president Fred M’membe has called on the UPND Administration to be practical and provide solutions as people were suffering.

Dr. M’membe warns that the current suffering threatens security as it may lead into civil unrest.

“Let’s be practical. People are suffering. This can trigger civil unrest, leading us deeper into the hole,” said Dr M’membe.

The Socialist Party president said this in an article below seen by Zambian Eye posted on his Facebook page:

In his statement to Parliament, finance minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane said,

“Once debt restructuring is completed, it will create fiscal space.” How? We ask because Zambia stopped servicing non multilateral debt since November 2020. So, where is the money we are saving from non servicing of debt? And how come there is no stabilizing impact on the economy? Once debt restructuring is achieved, we actually have to start paying. So, effectively, we will have less money – despite the partial grace periods negotiated for. Or did the finance minister mean after debt restructuring, we will have market access so we can have new borrowing from capital markets and other lenders? They seem to be inclined towards the latter as their plan B.

The rest is hogwash. We have been told for close to 3 years and constantly refusing to admit that we are out of pocket because of mining tax waivers and other concessions.

With regard to colossal sums of investments being attributed to mining investors, the reality is that it will not translate into dollars at investment par value flowing into the country. The reality of the matter is 70% of investment funding being quoted will be paid overseas for equipment, consultancy, legal fees, and so on and so forth.

It is also worth noting that mining is a long-term investment, and the gestation period for such investments is 5 years plus. So, there will be no immediate impact on the Zambian masses.

To claim that mining companies would have left the country with the taxation system UPND found is at best allucinating. Which investor can walk away from billions of dollars investment just like that? Why did they not walk away when President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa introduced the punitive windfall tax? Again, they are just justifying the unjustifiable to please their imperialist and transnational corporations masters.

We need some practical immediate solutions to mitigate the painful high cost of living traumatising Zambians. Sort out current problems and suffering of the people; then we can patiently listen to long-term mining plans. Let’s be practical. People are suffering. This can trigger civil unrest, leading us deeper into the hole.

We want immediate solutions within a 12 month planning cycle.

State has urged Court not to grant jailed Charity Katanga bail pending appeal

0

THE State has urged the Magistrate’s Court not to grant jailed former Deputy Inspector General of Police Charity Katanga bail pending appeal.

It has argued that Ms Katanga’s application for bail should be dismissed because she has failed to show extraordinary circumstances which can permit the court to grant the request.

The State contents that she has not demonstrated any exceptional circumstances to warrant the court to grant her bail pending appeal.

This is in the State’s arguments opposing Ms Katanga’s application for bail pending appeal.

Ms Katanga has appealed against the three-year jail term imposed on her for possession of 10 buses deemed to be proceeds of crime.

She has also applied for bail pending hearing of her appeal against her conviction and sentence in the High Court.

On Monday last week, Lusaka chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili jailed Ms Katanga after finding her guilty of possession of 10 Higer buses worth K26 million.

This was after the court found that between January 1, 2017 and June 6, 2022, the convict, jointly and while acting with others, bought 10 Higer buses, operating under Chibeka Express, for being proceeds of crime.

Ms Katanga failed to prove that the money used to buy the buses was from her legitimate sources of income.

Magistrate Chibwili found that the 45-year-old former senior police officer’s known income between 2017 and 2021 was over K1.7 million against over K18 million which was paid towards the purchase of the buses.

But in her appeal, Ms Katanga argues that the magistrate erred in law and fact when he found that there was reasonable suspicion that the 10 buses were proceeds of crime against the weight of the evidence.

She has since applied for bail pending hearing of her appeal, considering that she never breached bail conditions during trial.

But in response to her bail application, the State urged the court not to grant Ms Katanga bail because her conviction of sentence are firm as the convict has not shown exceptional circumstances for the court to grant her request.

It has argued that in order for bail pending appeal to be granted, there ought to be exceptional circumstances which the court must consider in exercising its discretion.

The State added that a perusal of the convict’s grounds of appeal shows that the appeal’s prospects of success are dim.

UPND GOVT’S GMO MEALIE MEAL PLAN- Fred M’membe

UPND GOVT’S GMO MEALIE MEAL PLAN

We would like to caution Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his league to respect the nation’s biosafety protocols, in particular the importation and consumption of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) maize or mealie meal.

GMO maize or mealie meal is prohibited in Zambia, and all successive administrations – UNIP, MMD, and PF- have adhered to these regulations and protected citizens from exposure to these foods.

But we are afraid that if there’s crop failure, as it seems to be the case in this situation, the price of our staple food – mealie meal will more than double, and Mr Hichilema and his corrupt tribal puppet regime will end up feeding this country with imported GMO maize or mealie meal.

We sounded the alarm on this matter last week and before the week could even conclude, our fears were confirmed after the Republican Vice-President Mrs Mutale Nalumango informed the nation that GMO mealie meal is safe for consumption. The Vice- President’s remarks came at the back of a report by the Zambia National Service (ZNS) that the GMO mealie meal, which was meant for export to the DR Congo had been stolen in one of their storage facilities.

Clearly, the perpetrators did this with the view of selling the said GMO mealie meal for consumption on the Zambian market.

Vice-President Nalumango’s stance on the consumption of GMO products, specifically mealie meal, is not only a major policy shift for Mr Hichilema and the UPND government but also revealing of what this corrupt tribal puppet regime intends to do when scarcity of the staple food hits the country owing to crop failure. We said it that the options are very limited for them, and so, the Vice-President’s recent encouragement on the consumption of GMO mealie meal settles our argument that this government will most likely import GMO mealie meal to feed to the nation.

We are aware that they are panicking because they have virtually wiped out the national food reserves after they sold the all maize that could have been used as reserves to the DR Congo and other neighbouring countries. They are under extreme pressure because hunger is looming.

So, they have hatched a plan to begin campaigning for the consumption of GMO maize or mealie meal. This government intends to mobilise various stakeholders like the Church, civil society, labour movement, and their surrogate political parties, among others, to advance their GMO consumption agenda. They’re mobilising, and very soon, we shall see paid voices begin echoing Vice-President Nalumango’s comments on GMO mealie meal consumption.

We urge Zambians not to treat the Vice-President’s statement on the consumption of GMO mealie meal lightly because it is all part of the grand scheme to introduce GMO mealie meal on the market and feed it to our people.

We must resist it.
