Corporate ethics and culture

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

This week the Germany Ambassador to Zambia posted a letter they sent to an unknown company indicating that she was returning what she termed an expensive Xmas gift. She also indicated that the money better be sent to some charity organizations! There is nothing wrong the Ambassador did. She just reacted the way they react in their culture. In their culture they don’t give each other anything. It’s not stinginess that’s how their culture is.

Business students stymying in top university are exposed to courses such as business ethics or culture science. In these courses, students are talk how to treat stakeholders from various cultures.

From the corporate governance perspective, shareholder wealth maximisation is important while in Germany it’s stakeholders first then shareholders last. In japan, Korea Mexico it’s the family that owns the business which matters (the keiretsu)!

The Germany ambassador must attend our conferences more often and see what conference takeaways are put in the conference bags. It’s the same flash discs or power banks. That’s our corporate culture. Our corporate culture is one of the most generous. Every year we send each other diaries, calendars, key holders, flash discs etc as presents. These are branded! Meaning it’s also a marketing strategy!

The east are even more generous than us! For example it’s a must to include in the Xmas present wines, whiskeys, vodkas etc!

The Ambassodor is new but am sure she will learn that our Zambian companies support not only our treasury in form of taxes, but also a lot of corporate social responsibility! Most of the church functions, orphanages, school events, concerts and even government events are funded by Zambian companies under corporate social responsibility!

It’s very unfortunate that the CEO of this unannounced company is feeling bad obviously about the whole issue but this is a case of cultural differences.

Against this backdrop, if you are invited to a birthday party by a Chinese or Russian family, do not eat before the event. There will be so much food and refusing to eat is a sign of rudeness! But if invited by the others, my friend eat in advance otherwise you will get drunk on an empty stomach!

Thanks

ZAMBIA POLICE HIGH COMMAND URGED TO RE-ORIENT THEIR OFFICERS ON THE IMPORTANT WORK THAT JOURNALISTS DO IN A DEMOCRATIC STATE

…. Association disturbed by harassment several Copperbelt journalists…..

11 December 2023, LUSAKA – The Media Owners Association of Zambia (MOAZ) is greatly disturbed by the uncalled for harassment of Flava FM, Hope TV and Yar FM Journalists , by Police officers during a press briefing in Kitwe Monday morning.

Information gathered by MOAZ is that, the said journalists were covering a press conference called by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) when officers stormed the venue and ordered that recordings are stopped and deleted.

One officer physically jostled with one of the reporters in a confrontation to delete whatever recording of the EFF leader she had done, saying the press briefing was an illegal gathering.

The officers further harassed the journalists with scornful remarks questioning why the media institutions they work for had allowed them to cover the press briefing in the first place and later on confiscated a camera.

The EFF leader was then whisked away to Riverside Police Station together with a journalist from Hope TV.

The Journalists have since described the ordeal as very disturbing and traumatizing.

MOAZ considers this affront on journalists as backward, uncalled for and unnecessary behaviour in a democratic country where officers are supposed to be in the forefront of protecting freedoms and lives of everyone including media practitioners.

As professionals, Police know that Journalists have a duty to inform the citizenry and one way of doing so is through collection of information at such press briefings.

Journalists must not, therefore, suffer for the misgivings of others, especially when they identify themselves as media practitioners, but must be respected and their work acknowledged.

What is even more saddening to MOAZ is that Police are displaying this behaviour, under an administration that is making strides in appreciating further, freedom of the press and expression by advancing the process of enacting the Freedom of Information Bill into law.

MOAZ therefore, humbly appeals to the Police high command to re-orient all officers on the important work that Journalists do in a mature democratic dispensation like Zambia to ensure such scenarios are never repeated.

Following this ordeal, MOAZ is actively engaging the Zambia Police Service for a meeting which has been agreed for as soon as possible to discuss the way forward.

Further, MOAZ wishes to appeal to the affected Journalists to be strong and not allow such unprofessional conduct to dissuade them from carrying out their assignments.

MOAZ stands in solidarity with all Journalists in the country as they carry out their most appreciated noble cause as the fourth estate.

Fashion Sakala reveals lack of Rangers ‘respect’ from Michael Beale as teammates stunned by brutal Ibrox axe

| The Herald | December 12, 2023 |

Fashion Sakala has revealed his heartbreak over his Rangers exit – with Michael Beale giving him the cold shoulder without an explanation.

The striker moved to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Fayha during the Londoner’s summer rebuild. After moving to Glasgow from Oostende in 2021, the forward became well-liked within the support and was part of the side that reached the Europa League final. He also won a Scottish Cup while at Ibrox, and the boss who ended his Scottish spell was sacked by October.

“When we had a team meeting, my answers were not allowed to be published. People started asking if I was there in pre-season. I was there from the beginning to the end. It was a hard one to take for me.

I stayed without training with the club for almost two weeks. I think I deserved much better, I deserved to be respected at least. I understand you want to sell me to get money to buy new players, that is fine.

“But let me just be part of the team, let me say goodbye nicely to my team-mates. When I received a call that I shouldn’t go to the training ground anymore, I didn’t see any of my team-mates anymore. It was hard to say goodbye in such a bad way to people who looked after me so well – Tavernier, Goldson – I had to talk to them on phones when it was time to leave.

“Even if there was a club that wanted to buy me, I could have at least been respected a little bit and leave the club in a good way. Rangers was a club that I felt was like my home and receiving that treatment was so hard for me.”

On his deteriorating relationship with Beale and Rangers exit overall, Sakala added: “That was the hard one. When I was coming back for the new season, I thought the coach would trust me. and want me there for the new season. He didn’t talk to me about anything or any transfers.

“He clearly showed me that I wasn’t part of his plans without telling me anything. The time I received a call from Mick Beale was when he told me not to come to the training ground anymore. That was hard to take for me because I didn’t do anything. Players leave clubs but they are not told not to go to the training ground, not told not to be part of the team.

“It was hard for them to believe that I wasn’t allowed to go to the training ground anymore. It was sad the way I said goodbye to Rangers, it is very sad. I know the fans didn’t understand the role they were playing with me, but they really helped me a lot.

The favour I wasn’t getting from the managers, I was getting it from the fans, I was getting it from the players. I was pushing myself every day and working hard every day to do it for them because when I do it, I knew they would be very proud of me and would be singing my song and pushing me.

“They played a bigger role for me there than some of the coaches I worked with at Rangers to be honest. “For me, the fans were more important than some of the coaches there. Except Gerrard, he was special.”

Mnangagwa cracks whip

0

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday cracked the whip on slackening ministers as he charged his troops to keep shoulders on the wheel towards the attainment of the nation’s Vision and aspirations.

He said even as the country breaks for the festive season, Cabinet ministers are expected to be ready to render services where need arises.

Yesterday, President Mnangagwa chaired the last Cabinet session of this calendar year, but even with the spirit of festivities in the air, he said ministries should remain open to render services to the people, who overwhelmingly voted for Zanu-PF in the August elections.

“In 2023, it was displeasing that some items were not discussed due to non-submission of the relevant Cabinet Memoranda, this was, in spite of having been proposed for consideration by ministers. Such oversights or dereliction of duty should not be repeated in the coming year.

“Another critical area of concern is the increasing tendency by some ministers to table substantive matters under “Any Other Business”. This practice must stop. Equally, the late submission of Cabinet Memoranda is retrogressive to constructive debate and to good administration, transparency, collective responsibility and accountability. Please adequately liaise with the Chief Secretary on such matters and be guided accordingly.”

In this regard, the President, who has adopted a scientific approach to governance which is underlined by performance-based contracts for ministers to foster a high-performance culture, said ministers must self-evaluate.

“Be advised that, going forward, you are called upon to regularly undertake critical and succinct self-evaluation of programmes and projects under your portfolios, to inform focused and coordinated programming.

“The expectations on us to deliver are high after the new mandate to govern bestowed on us by the electorate in the August 2023 Harmonised General Elections. We must not be found wanting in this regard,” he said.

In line with this thrust the President said ministers must take the Christmas break to seriously look into matters which they wish to table during the forthcoming session, which should be aligned with the broad Government Vision.

Building on achievements made by the Second Republic, which have seen the country’s economy growing, at the fastest rate in the region, the President said work is cut out for Cabinet ministers and that there is no room for complacency under his watch.

“While much work lies ahead; we must continuously do more in our quest to modernise, industrialise and grow our economy while improving the quality of life for our people.

“The growth of the economy notwithstanding, all ministries must work harder for the achievement of impactful results in our various programmes and projects.

“As such, the Cabinet must now accelerate the implementation of National Development Strategy 1 so that our National Vision 2030 of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle income society is attained much earlier. Your work is therefore cut out for you.

“Hence, Cabinet recess does not mean that we close our offices completely, Government business must not be disrupted and your availability to attend to issues, remains integral,” the President said.

Although the country went for elections mid-year there were no hiccups in Government operations, attesting to the Second Republic spirit of continuity, and that is the same spirit expected during the holiday break.

“This is testimony that our country continues to entrench constitutionalism, deepen democratic practices and improve bureaucratic efficiencies as we march forward towards Vision 2030 guided by our development philosophy, “Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo,” the President said.

Following Zanu-PF’s triumph in the August harmonised elections, expectations from the people are high and the Second Republic will maintain the development momentum that was overwhelmingly endorsed by the nation through the vote.

“In terms of the specific Cabinet programmes, I am reasonably satisfied that we were able to go through most items set for this session. We should be able to conclude outstanding matters as soon as we resume.

“Meanwhile, it is heartening to note that we completed all the Mid-Term Reports on the Third 100-Day Cycle Priority Projects, despite the changes in the nomenclature of various ministerial portfolios. This shows the continuity inherent in Government programming under the Second Republic.”

Zimbabwe takes delivery of military hardware from China

0

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday received military hardware from China in what could open gates for further Chinese military expansion in the Southern African region.

The equipment includes armoured fighting vehicles, personnel carriers, ambulances, motorised water purifiers, patrol boats, minibuses, sniper rifles, machine guns and hand pistols.

The donation was presented to the President at Inkomo Mechanized Brigadeby the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, who spoke highly of the historical ties between the two countries. The President thanked the Chinese Government saying China has been a reliable and consistent friend.

Chinese official in July this year, announced that his country is committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s military as the friendship between the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) deepens.

Speaking at the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) 96th Anniversary Celebration hosted in Harare, Defense Attaché of the Chinese Embassy senior Colonel Yonglong Zhu said the PLA supported international cooperation and worked towards a better world of peace and shared security.

Colonel Yanglong said, “The traditional friendship between the People’s Liberation Army and Zimbabwe Defense Forces was fostered by the founding fathers of the two countries in the 1960s and has always been cherished and constantly promoted by the two sides over the past decades.”

The colonel stressed the growing bonhomie between the two countries, especially in recent years. He observed in his speech, “The recent years have witnessed this brotherly relationship further strengthened with friendly exchanges and cooperation in all fields flourishing.”

“Especially during the pandemic, the two armies did not interrupt any cooperation and exchanges, have actively overcome the interference of the pandemic, and continue to advance the development of the relationship between the two armies,” he added.

Zimbabwe has also applied to join the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), of which China is also a part.

As reported by Xinhua, President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa is banking on Russia’s support for its admission into the bank, which was established jointly by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The development comes in the wake of concerns that the African continent, which has traditionally relied on Russia for military support, braces for a period of uncertainty due to the ongoing Ukraine war. China has the perfect opportunity to push with its military investments, arms sales, and security cooperation agreements.

With historical links dating back to the anti-colonial liberation struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, Russia provides just under half of the military hardware in Africa. Troops are trained, weapons are sold, and mercenaries are sent out as the cornerstones of security assistance.

Although reports published earlier this year suggested that countries in the West African region, including Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, were among those tilting towards China for military support, Zimbabwe in the southern African region seems to be following suit.

The concerns about China’s expansion in the African region are also exacerbated by the possibility of Beijing acquiring basing rights in the countries by the massive capital they could offer under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), besides the security agreements and military sales.

Prophet Magaya’s Heart Stadium Lavish Gold Toilet Seats: Here Is How Much They Cost

Over the past two days, social media has been stirring over the gold toilet seats that Prophet Walter Magaya installed at his new Heart Stadium.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened the new stadium on 10 December 2023 at the Yadah Hotel in Harare. The 5000-capacity stadium will complement the stadia used for local matches in the country.

Currently, the country is banned from playing international matches as all the stadiums are not up to FIFA standards. Last month, the Warriors played their home matches against Rwanda and Nigeria in Rwanda.

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder and leader Walter Magaya stepped in and constructed The Heart Stadium. The facility, which currently has a 5,000-seater capacity, will house 40,000 fans upon completion.

The Gold Toilet Seats At The Heart Stadium
One of the social media talking points from the stadium was the toilet seats. During a tour of the facility after its launch, Magaya took dignitaries to the ablution facilities to be used by players and fans. The toilets have luxurious gold-coated seats fit for royalty.

Magaya spoke about the unique toilet seats:

“During the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Argentine legend Diego Maradona had a special request. The request was for premium toilet seats throughout the duration of the tournament. This shows that sports players have a level of comfort that they desire. We considered this as we constructed The Heart Stadium hence, we imported these golden heated toilet seats which shall be placed in every ablution area in the changing rooms.

“They arrived here during the evening on the 9th and shall be fully installed by January as we continue with our construction and perfection. Dividing cubicles are still on their way so that we at least create privacy in the toilets in a professional way.”

How Much The Luxurious Toilets Cost
Royal Toiletry, an American supplier of luxury design toilets, bathtubs and bathroom accessories, sells the toilet seat for US$3,015. On Amazon, they go for US1,924.60 while the Chinese marketplace Alibaba sells them for US$215.

Tribal rifts widen in Zimbabwe after stupid cartoon

0

In Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city, the perpetual tribal conflicts are becoming more intense. Most tensions exist between the Shona people, the country’s largest tribe, and the Ndebeles, who dominate in Matabeleland, part of which are Bulawayo province and its capital of the same name.

In the 1980s, a genocide unleashed by former President Robert Mugabe’s government against the Ndebele people left more than 20,000 people of the minority tribe dead. Since then, things between the Shona people and the Ndebeles have never been good, with tensions passing from generation to generation.

In July of 2019 then-deputy mayor Tinashe Kambarami, who belongs to the Shona-speaking minority, suspended the city’s Ndebele-speaking town clerk, Christopher Dube. The Ndebele people refuse to be dominated by another tribe in cities, where they make up the majority. “We cannot have Shona people coming here to rule over us when they killed our people during the 1980s tribal war,” says Thabani Dlodlo, a resident of Bulawayo.

The tribal conflicts are not different in Harare, the Zimbabwean capital. According to Tjenesani Ntungakwa, a researcher with the Revolutionary Research Institute of Zimbabwe (RRIZ), tribalism should be a subject left well alone. To him, tribalism is about a weak national identity. “Tribalism is an emotional topic by its nature and does not need to be discussed in wrong spheres; if we are to build a national identity in Zimbabwe, we have to start from the community level,” says Ntungakwa.

In order to end tribalism in the Southern African nation, the scholar proposes establishing a national identity forum at which there will be an exchange of ideas. At such a platform, Ntungakwa says, each tribe that feels marginalised ought to express itself.

Tribalism is a notorious phenomenon across the African continent. In Zimbabwe, the tribal rifts are so deep that many Ndebele and Shona tribesmen have started to attack one another via social media – a move that analysts warn is a time bomb for physical tribal clashes any time soon. Regarding the rampant tribalism in Matabeleland, Zimbabwean economists have pinned the blame on the regions’ economic backwardness.

“Bulawayo and several other parts of Matabeleland used to accommodate many industries, and a lot of people found jobs in those regions. But now hundreds of industries have shut down, and Ndebele people have less employment opportunities than Shonas,” Kingston Nyakurukwa, a Zimbabwean independent economist, explains. To him, the country’s economy, which is in dire straits, has fuelled tribal tensions as Ndebele people feel economically marginalised.

Today, media outlets like Zimdaily perpetuate derogatory insults and contribute to ethnic divisions within Zimbabwean society. The media house published a controversial cartoon aimed and stirring tribal tension. The cartoon in question portrays a bastardized version of a portrait featuring the last monarch of AmaNdebele, King Lobengula kaMzilikazi, with the face of Sengezo Tshabangu, the Interim Secretary General of CCC, carrying a bag of sugar. The imagery harks back to historical allegations against King Lobengula, accusing him of selling the country for a bag of sugar when he signed the Rudd Concession. The cartoon goes further to insinuate that Tshabangu is selling out CCC to Zanu-PF in a similar manner, following the recall of rebel MPs and councillors.

How Togolese national team survived 2010 AFCON gun shooting – Adebayor opens up on scary experience

0

Togo was forced to forfeit the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations due to a tragic shooting incident they encountered before the tournament.

The terrible situation led to the death of their bus driver and goalkeeper as well as two other players sustaining serious injuries.

Emmanuel Adebayor, who was the captain of the team at the time has labeled that incident as the scariest experience in his life and is grateful to God to be alive and fit today.

Sharing the traumatizing experience on his YouTube Channel, Adebayor said they found themselves in an unfortunate situation while on their way from Congo to Angola for their first game of the tournament against Ghana.

“We jumped in the bus and set from Congo to Angola. We reached a place and saw there were a lot of security officials. The way they dressed was as if they were going to war. As footballers, we only made fun of it. We were just young boys and were just having fun. Our bus had to be delayed because they had to check our documents. It took us thirty minutes to get that sorted and we crossed that border to where the AFCON was being. We had two buses. One for the equipment and one of the players. While on the bus, I asked that the AC be turned on but I was told that there was no AC on that bus and that the one with the luggage had AC. The players were already to swap but I convinced them that we should use that one and enjoy the natural air.”

According to Adebayor, the journey was problem-free and they were almost at their destination when they heard an explosion.

He narrated that machine guns followed suit after the explosion, which led to the death of the driver while their goalkeeper, Kodjovi Obilale sustained serious gunshot injuries that have paralysed him until today.

“The bus with the equipment was in front and that of the players was behind. A few minutes into the journey we heard a big explosion and I thought it was fireworks. But I looked around and there was smoke all around and all I could hear was go down. There were machine guns firing. It was like a movie. We were shouting and there was a bit of silence then we found out that the driver was dead. Our second goalkeeper started crying about his leg but we thought he was joking. Then we started seeing blood in the car and he took off his shirt and we saw that his singlet was all red.”

Emmanuel Adebayor and the rest of the squad including three players who sustained injuries escaped the scene with the help of their military escort.

Togo abandoned the tournament leaving their group with three nations, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso.

Speaking after the incident, Obilale told L’Equipe newspaper that he is a ‘miracle’.

“I’m a miracle. I want to go back home. When the tension increases in me, I lose it, I want to break everything. I want to see my children again and be back with those closest to me.”

Muslim high school fears for future as France cuts public funding

0

At the Averroès high school in Lille, staff and pupils are worried about their future after French authorities announced they would end state subsidies over management problems and teaching they judged to be at odds with France’s secular values.

“I was marking geography homework and asking myself: ‘Why am I here? What am I doing? What’s the point?’ I’ve just heard I’m a Salafi, a convert – me, over here marking geography papers. And I said to myself, well, so that’s what they’re accusing me of…”

Vincent Pieterarens has been teaching history and geography at the Lycée Averroès for 15 years, exactly as long as the high school has been receiving funding from the French state.

Averroès first opened in 2003 as a private Muslim institution, originally housed within a mosque. The first establishment of its kind in mainland France, it was set up as the government cracked down on so-called “ostentatious” religious symbols in state schools and a series of expulsions made headlines – including the case of 17 Muslim girls excluded from a Lille lycée for wearing headscarves to class.

The northern city has a large Muslim population and Averroès aimed to offer students – both girls and boys – a place where they could observe their religion openly while still following the national curriculum.

From a dozen pupils it grew to several hundred, winning praise for its small class sizes, committed teachers and impressive results.

By 2008 it had entered into contract with the French state, which subsidises private schools that agree to follow national education guidelines, submit to more extensive inspections and accept students – and teachers – of all faiths.

It was around then that Pieterarens joined the lycée.

“Not only am I an atheist, originally I’m even kind of a die-hard secularist,” he told RFI’s Valentin Hugues. “When I saw the school being set up, I said: ‘What the heck is this?’

“Then when I started working here, I soon settled in. It’s a great pleasure – the pleasure of debate, of dialogue.” ‘French values’

But now Averroès, regularly ranks towards the top of regional and national league tables, faces the loss of its public funding, worth around €300,000 to €500,000 each year.

In a decision made public on Monday, regional authorities have ended their contract with the high school, citing irregularities in its management and concerns that elements of its teaching did not respect French values.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, in a letter addressed to the school the local prefecture outlined “serious shortcomings” including a lack of resources on gender equality and LGBTQ+ issues, and over-representation of religious Islamic works.

It also singled out a course on Muslim ethics that it said contained aspects “contrary to the values of the French Republic”.

The letter – signed by the prefect of the Nord department, Georges-François Leclerc – criticised the school’s administrators for lack of transparency and financial dysfunction, Le Parisien reported.

The censure is based on the findings of a local committee, not national school inspectors, who in their 2020 report on Averroès said they saw nothing to suggest its teaching failed to respect French values.

“The school has been around for 20 years, so obviously over the years things get better, more professional,” headteacher Eric Dufour told RFI.

“We are now fully committed to meeting all requirements.” Witch hunt?

Averroès plans to challenge the prefecture’s decision in court.

The school has faced wrangling over its funding before. Notably the conservative council of Lille’s Hauts-de-France region has attempted to refuse to pay out its subsidies for each of the past three academic years, citing a grant the school received in 2014 from a non-governmental organisation in Qatar.

The Lille administrative court has repeatedly ordered the regional council to pay up, most recently in early November.

The high school says that it is subjected to close scrutiny, including frequent inspections.

“After an inspection there are always things to rectify,” said Dufour, who told RFI he had personally removed an Islamic text from a class reading list that he judged not to fit with the school’s ethos.

But some in the school community say the authorities’ attention goes beyond oversight, claiming the establishment is the target of a witch hunt.

Outcry after French police question schools about pupils absent on Muslim holiday
Studying under a weight
Averroès has the right to continue operating privately, but without public funding it may be forced to hike fees for its pupils – who teacher Pieterarens describes as “extraordinary”.

Among them are Oumaïma and Noha, two students working towards their baccalauréat. The high school’s pass rate for the leaving exam hovers around 98 percent.

“Take the example that our teacher here is atheist and we’re Muslim,” said Noha, referring to Pieterarens. “That shows that differences, whether you’re white or non-white, religious or not, they don’t change anything.

“We’re just here to work and get our bac. That’s really the goal.”

But however much they knuckle down, the now national attention their high school is getting is impossible to ignore.

“We feel there’s something weighing on us,” Oumaïma said. “Everything being said outside school, we feel it.”

She told RFI she fears the consequences will last beyond graduation. “If we go for an interview for instance and we say we went to the Lycée Averroès, we’ll still keep that label afterwards. That’s what’s so complicated too.”

UN criticism of UK Rwanda plan incomprehensible- minister

0

International Development Minister Andrew Mitchell’s comments to AFP came after a day after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak won a knife-edge parliamentary vote on his latest version of the scheme.

“I wish to express most extraordinary amazement that the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, strongly opposes Britain’s plan for sending people to Rwanda, on the grounds that Rwanda is not a safe country,” Mitchell told AFP.

The UNHCR has from the start been harshly critical of the UK-Rwanda deportation plan, first announced by Sunak’s predecessor Boris Johnson last year.

The government presented it as a way of dealing with increasing numbers of migrants crossing the Channel from France in small boats.

But the UNHCR has voiced “deep concern about the ‘externalisation’ of asylum obligations and the serious risks it poses for refugees”.

The scheme has been stuck in the courts since the first deportees were pulled off a flight out of the UK at the last minute in June 2022 after an injunction from the European Court of Human Rights.

‘Genuinely stumped’

Then in November, Britain’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously that deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda was illegal under international law, since Rwanda was not a safe country.

The government came back with its new Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill last week, seeking to declare Rwanda safe and circumvent that ruling.

The emergency legislation, which passed its first hurdle Tuesday, would compel judges to treat Rwanda as safe. It would give UK ministers powers to disregard sections of human rights law.

Mitchell insisted that the Rwanda plan was needed to “break” the business model of people smugglers bringing migrants across the English Channel.

Almost 30,000 irregular migrants have crossed the Channel from northern France in rudimentary vessels this year.

“Vulnerable people — and many of them have died — are smuggled by the modern-day equivalent of a slave trader across what is the biggest, busiest shipping lane in the world, to enter Britain illegally,” Mitchell said.

“No government can allow that sort of thing to happen,” said the minister, speaking to AFP by phone on the sidelines of the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva.

He was “amazed, astonished, genuinely stumped”, that the UNHCR would criticise the plan, he added.

‘Value for money’

The UN refugee agency itself has relocated vulnerable migrants from war-torn Libya to Rwanda, he argued.

“I can’t understand it, that the UNHCR would complain that Britain would send people to an unsafe country, when that is clearly not what they think, or they wouldn’t be sending all these people to Rwanda. It defies explanation.”

UNHCR does have a programme called the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM), aimed at evacuating some of the most vulnerable refugees in Libya to Rwanda.

But a UNHCR spokesperson stressed to AFP that “this programme is emergency, temporary and voluntary in nature and serves a very specific, limited purpose.

“It is a facility for receiving refugees, on an emergency basis, whose human rights, and in some cases lives, are at immediate risk in Libya,” the spokesperson said.

Asked about London’s support for the UNHCR, Mitchell said Britain would always fund the “UNHCR for the vital work they do, where we think they’re getting value for money — and where we think they’re acting in support of values and interests which Britain supports”.

Zahara death: Family suspect she was poisoned during lobola ceremony

Some family members of the late South African Afro pop sensation, Zahara, believe that poison might have been poured in her drink during her lobola ceremony which took place two days before she fell ill and was rushed to a hospital in Johannesburg.

Zahara, real name Bulelwa Mkutukana, passed away on Monday night, after spending the last few weeks at a private health facility in Johannesburg.

South Africa’s sports, arts and culture minister, Zizi Kodwa, announced her death, saying:

“My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

While condolences continue to pour in, some family members believe Zahara might have been the victim of foul play.

“What is surprising is that when Zahara celebrated her 36th birthday on November 9, she was as strong as an ox. She didn’t show of signs of being sick,” one family member reportedly told Zimoja.

The family member said they believed that a disgruntled relative might have been behind the suspected poisoning.

“The lobola negotiations went well during the visit by the Xaba delegation. The family representing the Mkutukanas was happy that Zahara would finally get married to someone she loves dearly. But someone interfered with the whole process by bewitching her,” the source says.

“A relative must have gotten pissed off when they heard that the Xaba family were coming back to pay the outstanding amount of lobola. We suspect that Zahara was either poisoned or muthi was put into her drink,” the family member said.

Meanwhile, Zahara’s family has finally officially broken its silence about her death.

“It’s very sad to us as a family to have lost one of our beloved daughters,” said family spokesperson Nkosiyami Mkutukana.

“Besides being someone who was popularly known, to us, she was a family member, a humble person, an ordinary child to us. We would love to express our appreciation to the staff members of the hospital who took care of her when she was ill.

“We appreciate what they did, they did their best to avoid what has happened, and we appreciate their efforts. We are now confirming that the girl is no more and we are grieving the loss.

“The family is very sad to have lost one of their beloved daughters. We would also love to be given an opportunity as a family to sit and discuss the next steps.”

Rebel group in Colombia to stop kidnaps for ransom

0

The rebel group in Colombia, called EMC, said it will no longer kidnap people to get money.

The EMC is a big group that separated from the Farc in Colombia. It includes rebels who didn’t stop fighting when the Farc made peace in 2016.

The news is good for Gustavo Petro’s government, which is working on making peace with the EMC.

Kidnappings for money have been increasing in Colombia this year.

The father of Liverpool footballer Luis Díaz was taken by force, but then let go.

Mr Díaz Snr and his wife were taken from their home in Barrancas, Colombia. This brought attention to the problem of kidnapping, which some criminals and rebel groups use to make money.

EMC announced on Tuesday that it’s a win for President Petro, who wants to bring “complete peace” to Colombia, but kidnappings for money may still happen.

The National Liberation Army (ELN) is a group in Colombia that kidnaps people for money. They are one of many criminal and rebel groups in Colombia that still continue to do this.

The Ombudsman’s office announced this week that 91 people are still being kept as hostages in different parts of the country.

A recent report from Colombia’s Foundation for Peace and Reconciliation shows that the number of people kidnapped in the first 10 months of this year is the highest it has been since 2016, the year the government made a peace deal with the Farc.

The EMC, which stands for Estado Mayor Central (Central General Command in Spanish), is the biggest rebel group that formed after the peace deal in 2016. It is estimated to have around 3,000 members.

It is most busy in the areas of Caquetá, Guaviare, Meta and Putumayo.

Talks with the EMC have been difficult. In May, President Petro stopped the peace agreement with the rebel group because they killed four indigenous teenagers who were forced to join the group and tried to escape.

The two sides started talking about peace again last month.

Mweetwa denies affair with musician’s wife after being named in suicide note

By Angela Muchinshi(News Diggers)
MUSICIAN Nathan Mithi yesterday committed suicide after leaving a lengthy note explaining that he made that decision because his wife, Sabby Phiri, had been unfaithful throughout their marriage and he could no longer bear it.

Mithi, a member of Ghetto Link, left a list of 15 men whom he accused his wife of sleeping with and first on that list was Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa.

But Mweetwa has denied the allegations, saying he was hearing the woman’s name for the first time and further accusing some critics of fabricating the story.

Meanwhile, Phiri says she has never met Mweetwa, but she had only sent him a message on behalf of her relative.

In his note, to which he attached a Google Drive link which he said contained evidence of his wife’s affairs like videos of her confessing and some pictures she had exchanged with some of the men, Mithi also admitted that after catching her cheating on him a few times… -News Diggers

“SABBY YOU ARE THE
REASON FOR MY DEATH”

A mother should always teach their daughter the truth, but your mother did the opposite . Your mother married you off even when I was still married with you. Cold hearted mother.

I have been married to Sabby Phiri from 2012 till to this day of 2023
We have had our ups and downs, and through out the years I wasn’t good husband to her because of her lifestyle.

When I first meet Sabby in PHI. For me it was looks and love the first time. She was young and beautiful looking.
To be honest, i wasn’t sure about her from the first time I met her.
Something was off about her. I could not just place it nicely at that time Couz I was just a young man too
After we got married, that’s when I was told that she had 2 kids from 2 different fathers. you can imagine how that fills.

In her time of life, she had a 3rd man who wanted to marry her before me.
This man died, he was killed by the first man who wanted to marry her, the father to the first born child.
Her past life was not clear, I discovered that after the guy died Sabby was so Quick to full in love again without taking her time to process her life very well and take the right step.
She was in love with A young Desmond dezzy mukoloba, working at Kalingalinga police station back in the days.
Sabby meet Desmond after she was arrested and was in prison for about 2 months, that’s how Desmond who at this time was on duty working started showing interest in Sabby well she was behind bars.
Well Sabby was in prison she was pregnant but lots her baby well she was still in there. The man who dead left her pregnant and she didn’t know till then she had a miscarriage right there in prison.

LONG STORY SHOT
After Sabby was released from jail, they got along with Desmond who at this time was dating sabby and another lady.
After a period of time had passed, Desmond refused to marry Sabby in the presence of his family for a reason that Sabby had kids.
Done time to move on.sabby back on the road for more treasure hunting

QUESTION?

If you are following very well.
Take a second and think about it here, isn’t Sabby at this point Supposed to take a break from dating and go through her past life? kaya mwandi

LET ME PROCEED

That’s how I found myself with her after the twist of events with Desmond.

After this guy, Sabby had her own ides of finding a man to marry her.
But when I discovered that she had a dirty life of her own. She was Trying to go back to the her ex who’s then married well she was married to me.

Sabby tried to have sex in our house during the day with my friend by the name of JM Brown this was the first time I court her in the act.
I was so broken at this point in life.
I could not help but find myself with other women. And believe me you, it was me against the world. I even reached out to my ex thinking we can fix things again but it never worked out.

I had a lot of girls in my life at this point. I was drinking, clubbing, westing money on friends girls, sex, e.t.c.
I was so much in pain at this point. After the trust I had for Sabby it this point it was all gone.
I just wanted to leave her at this point.
Sabby got busy with her life trying to find Mr Right.

MY MEAN REASON FOR
TAKING SUCH AN ACTION

My reason was very simple to why I was doing all this. I wanted to find a better woman for me. A good woman who was not doing the things that Sabby was doing. I wanted to put an end to my relationship with Sabby so I can move on with another woman.
But in the process i discovered that I was inflicting more good than terrible damage to myself. The more I pushed for me and her to separate, the more I was still with her.
We could go our separate ways for a while but the sooner before we knew it, we are back together again and again and again and again……..
I didn’t understand what was going on at this point in my life.

But with time, i learnt something from everything. And so i decided that I should change my life and I did.
I asked myself why was sabby still with me after the things I have done to her.
And why am I still trying to find a woman to marry well am still with Sabby?
Then it clicked, Change was the only solution here.
I was a better person a good loving husband. I even apologized to her over my actions towards her over the years. We where back in love like never before.
I told my wife to change her life and she promised me that things will be different.
Truth be told, from 2016 till now, my wife has never changed. She’s been sleeping with different men around Zambia.

Men from Facebook/ private meetings, I told my wife to stop but she never did listen to me.

Over the years she has been in and out of the house because of sex. She has changed to a person who loves sex, drinking beers, all she wants is good life, men with money, cars, e.t.c. You name it.
To me she pretends, but the truth is clear, she’s nothing but a Gold digger.

She’s married to me but still searching for a man who can give her the best life she needs.
With that been her plan, things have not worked as planned.
Sabby tried to get rid of me just like I tried so many yes ago.
But ended up sleeping with one man after another in the name of searching for MR right

When she leaves the house, she would block me every where just to prevent me from calling her phone.
The most bizarre thing about this story is that, the mother had always known where she would be all these times and she supported her wrong decisions.

Every time she’s away the mother and sister will have the first cut of a phone call from her with the new numbers that she hides from me.
They could create stories of where she is so that I believe them.
But with time I mastered there methods of lies and you could see that time was really caching up with them.
She made me look bad in front of her mother and sister, the sister even insulted me in the presence of her, the mother, the husband, and my daughter. and my wife just stood there watching her without any words to her.

She would leave for days just for sex.
She would leave the kids home alone just for her own enjoyment, leaving a child who is 1 year and some months with me at home.
I have been a forgiving husband over the years but it seems my wife had taken me for granted.

I have been posting pictures of me and her all over social media, just to show her that am happily married to her. And that I have put everything behind me.
I could always talk nice things about her to people.
I even stopped having conversations about sex with my friends or getting numbers from other women. I could tell my friends that I was a changed man, and they could not believe me at all. But with time they did Cuz they saw my actions. And for this I was happy with my life.
When am home with her my phone was no longer hidden from her, no password on my phone.
I gave her the power to go through my phone whenever she wants. I was a clean guy at this point. I was Completely different, A Changed mother fucker.

THE LIST (dodx)/pdf

I have a list of men she has had sex with and others that I don’t know there names.

If you have had sex with her and you are not on the list, it’s because I don’t remember you or your name Lucky you. I have a number of about 15 in my head so far to say the list. Will try to break it down for you.

:Below are a few names:

1: Hon. Cornelius Mweetwe chief government spokesperson. UPND.
2: Jetty Lungu standing for ZICA president.
3: General Kanene, this guy is a relative but sex was more important to sabby.
4: desmond dezzy mukoloba, even to this day there are still having sex. Police officer. Works from center police under traffic. And his married.
5: Casco Mubang, fuck you. You took her away from me for 2 days into your house.
6: a bus driver name I have forgotten, but been to his one roomed house and did some beating out of him. In the presence of sabby her self.
7: a doctor name forgotten.
8: Isaac Mulinda Junior a very stupid man and his married too. Fuck you.
9: a teacher from UTH, by then he used to teach the younger brother.
The same teacher use’s sign language to
talk. Sabby forced her self on this man because she wanted him to marry her.
10: a young boy from the family side, in our house on our bed fuck the both of you.
11: A guy by the name of JM brown, in our house. Fuck you.
12: our landlord where we where-staying in Chipata. Mr Lungu old man Abouja. A very useless man.

As am typing this she has run away from home twice this month of 11/2023.
The last move she did was last week Sunday on the 25 of September till now I don’t know where she’s sleeping and doing her normal routine. It’s now the first of December. The mother told me to call her and that her phone was on.
Which I did and we talked, she’s just told me she’s in mazabuka at the uncles house
Just like months ago when she was in Kabwe for 2 days at Casco Mubanga’s house and lied that she was at her father’s house in Obama . I now know how there cards are been played so they can’t fool me anymore.

I was with her last week Wednesday to Thursday morning we had sex that night and we talked about our marriage, she said sorry about her bad behavior and she was ready to start all over again. Sounds familiar right.

The last time I spoke to hear was on Sunday evening when she sent a text saying I love you. From then all her numbers are off line just like always. Stone cold woman you are sabby.
I bagged you to tell me if our relationship was long gone so I can give you your freedom. So many times i asked you but what did you do, you told me you still loved me. You told me you wanted this marriage.

TO PEOPLE THAT KNOW MY STORY

Please fill free to add to what have I have forgotten am too emotional right now.
Add to what I have not written down Cuz am in pain and I can’t type it out anymore.
The list goes on and on, I added a video clip of her Confessing to some of these activists.
And sending nudes to men.

I also have audio sounds of men that have come clean confessing doing these things with sabby. I had a one on one meeting with them and recording it all. It’s all saved in my email address and phone

“WHY HAVE I KILLED MY SELF”

I did it because I truly loved her from the bottom of my heart.
My heart could not take the nonsense that she is into. But at the same time it was true love for me.
I have lost hope in love, I only see one woman in my life and that is her.
Therefore!. if I can’t have her, then let me rest in peace. Am a changed man, I have no feelings for any other woman out there. I only see One woman and that is Sabby, the same woman I wanted to let go so many years ago, but she changed me so much.

PERSONAL!

SABBY SABBY SABBY! Remember am not the first man to die in your hands but the second one. Remember remember remember! and take note.
The next man will not tolerate what I was going through with you but will kill you by his hands.
I told you so many times that one day I will die if you continue treating me like this.
A number of times I tried to commit suicide because of your nonsense.
I told you if you don’t want me then free me, but you never wanted too, see now what you have done to me. I still love you even when am dead. But change your ways. Lean to say No!
I did avoid telling your mother the truth about your lifestyle because I thought you would change your life. Even your other relatives. I protected you but in return you made me look like am the one with a problem.
I was always checking up on you yes, because of your nonsense. Your secret life that you had, not even your friends know about it.
After having sex out there with other men, then you also come home and have sex with me. The truth was batter than what you did to me.

.My advice to you people.

“Never marry a woman because of her looks but marry her for who she is”
The first mistake I made with Sabby

Looks aren’t everything in a relationship, but they do matter. A relationship based on physical appearance often has an expiration date. Many factors play a role in the success of any relationship, including the couple’s personalities, shared interests or values, and mutual love for each other.

I live her with 5kids, 3 of my own and 2 from 2 different fathers.
am not even sure if they are my kids. Chalo ichi..anyway
Enjoy your life party harder well you still can , your time is coming sooner!
Dodx will never take you anywhere boi. Relax your self.

Check for I have left behind hint. My new MTN line it’s all in there

Zambia is on the verge of being a one-party state: Who, or what, will stop Hichilema?- Sishuwa Sishuwa

0

Zambia’s former ruling parties have typically fared poorly after losing power. The United National Independence Party (UNIP) ruled for 27 years but gradually collapsed following its defeat in 1991. The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) led the country for the next 20 years yet similarly dissipated after losing power in 2011.

When the Patriotic Front (PF) went into opposition after losing elections in 2021, many expected it to follow the same route – including the new president, Hakainde Hichilema. Just two months after the election, he declared the PF to be dead and buried. “The dead do not come back from the graveyard. Do not make the mistake of voting for a ghost,” he warned ahead of a by-election. Yet, in that poll, voters overwhelmingly backed the PF. And since then, the opposition party has showed that there is life left in it.

The resilience of the PF
There are several reasons that explain why the former ruling party has not crumbled since 2021.

First, it has benefited from changes to the constitution introduced by former president Edgar Lungu in 2016. Those amendments made it harder for MPs to cross the floor, which now trigger a by-election in which the incumbent is barred from running. This enforced discipline has enabled the main opposition party to retain control over its members. The abolition of the position of deputy minister and the limit of 30 cabinet ministers have also reduced Hichilema’s capacity to dispense patronage, aiding the PF’s survival.

Second, the former ruling party retains a stable base both among the electorate – especially in the Copperbelt, northern, and eastern parts – and in parliament, where 58 of 59 opposition seats belong to the PF. Unlike after previous instances transfers of power, the losing party has not suffered mass defections to the new ruling party.

Third, the PF has not yet held a convention to elect the successor to Lungu, who formally quit active politics in August 2021. This has kept different factions jockeying for power and the chance to lead the party and country. These factors – alongside an uncertain economic outlook and an incumbent seen as promoting ethnic-regional appointments – have left the PF relatively intact.

Ahead of two by-elections in October 2022, it looked like the “ghost” party was set to win again. This time, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) manipulated both Zambia’s electoral body and the judicial process to exclude the PF candidates from the ballots. Pitted against weaker rivals, the ruling party won easily. At the same time, the UPND seemingly decided to crush the opposition going forwards.

The first expression of this strategy arose in April 2023 when the government threatened to deregister the PF for failure to provide an updated list of office bearers following Lungu’s retirement. Public backlash against the move forced the UPND to back down.

The second occurred this May when the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, issued a bizarre notice that conferred powers on the Registrar of Societies to order political parties to hold elective conventions “within sixty days” to fill any vacancies. Failure to comply, Mwimbu warned, would have serious consequences. Although the notice applied to all political parties, it was primarily intended to force the PF to choose Lungu’s successor so that Hichilema could know his rival for the next election well in advance. In early-October, the Registrar of Societies used its new powers and ordered parties to hold elective conventions or face deregistration. When the PF refused and threatened to challenge the legality of the directive, the UPND moved to essentially take over the main opposition party.

Hichilema’s coalition
To better understand this final element of the UPND’s strategy, it is important to locate its campaign within a broad coalition of domestic and international interest groups that stand to benefit from the PF’s suffocation.

The first group consists of international, mainly Western, actors. The PF is believed to ideologically lean towards China and Russia. Western nations seek Zambia’s alignment not only in terms of diplomacy but access to precious minerals essential to energy transition. In Hichilema, they have a malleable partner, which explains why they have been largely restrained in their criticism of him. For them, overlooking Hichilema’s attacks on democracy is a small price to pay for having a leader who serves their interests.

The second group is made up of prominent domestic and foreign businessmen who aligned with the UPND for financial reasons. They bankrolled Hichilema’s election campaigns and now seek a return on their investment. One five-year term is insufficient to recoup their investment, so they are pushing for his re-election. One or two of these businessmen are reportedly financing a faction that recently sprouted within the PF and is generally seen as working with the UPND to weaken the main opposition party from within.

Another set of local businessmen is made up of Hichilema’s close allies from the 1990s when major state enterprises were dismantled for privatisation. Their reference point is former President Frederick Chiluba (1991-2002), who opened the door of accumulation for them but got side-tracked by a life of fancy suits and shoes. The nationalistic impulses of Chiluba’s successors adversely affected this cohort’s aspirations, but the election of a privatisation-minded leader has thrust the country back into their hands.

Added to this local network of businessmen is the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation, Hichilema’s long-term supporters, that serves as a lobby for foreign mining capital. Its head appears to be a key member of the shadow state that seems to be deciding government policy.

A third group comprises budding presidential hopefuls within the UPND. Hichilema is eligible to stand for re-election in 2026, but this groups is looking to the longer-term and the need to maintain the party’s position. Supporting Hichilema in weakening the PF secures their collective future prospects.

The fourth group is made up of professional elements of urban middle-class Zambians embedded in civil society, academia, and the private media. They are not card-carrying UPND members, but their personal, ethno-regional, and business interests make them kowtow to Hichilema. These elites were vocal critics of abuses of government power under the PF but now either have been sucked into various government bodies or are tacitly supporting the president for reasons that have little to do with public considerations. The private media, for example, has positioned itself as a loyal mouthpiece of Hichilema. On the rare occasions it offers criticism, the tone is one of annoyance that the leader’s activities may jeopardise his electoral prospects.

Aware that the PF’s survival threatens their long-term material interests and business aspirations, this group’s members – who help shape public opinion using diminishing credibility gained from criticising Lungu-era wrongs – are shielding Hichilema from blame, discrediting his critics, and delegitimising the opposition by persuading voters to see them as dangerous. This group is focussed less on defending UPND than on discrediting the opposition and critics of Hichilema.

The final group is made up of Hichilema, Mwiimbu, and the loyalist officials around them. A cabinet minister who requested anonymity revealed that no amount of criticism is likely to dissuade the president (also known as HH) from destroying the PF. “He harbours an intense dislike for the PF that makes him totally inadvisable on the issue. It is like the former ruling party reminds him of the atrocities committed against him in opposition and annihilating it is a form of closure for him or enacting revenge. If the PF was a building, I am convinced that HH would have razed it to the ground.”

While there may be truth to this reading, the president’s undemocratic manoeuvres are also driven by a desperate desire for re-election.

A questionable convention
The PF’s voting base has not disintegrated and if the opposition was to find a new credible leader or form an alliance with other parties, it could well win the 2026 election. The UPND is therefore eager to nullify the PF and acquire its supporters – either directly after destroying the PF or indirectly by installing its own leadership within the opposition party.

This explains why, when the PF refused to comply with the directive to hold an elective convention, the UPND moved to effectively organise the convention on behalf of them. On 24 October, Miles Sampa, a renegade PF MP and one of the eight individuals who had formally expressed interest in replacing Lungu, caught his party unaware when he held a hitherto unannounced meeting that he dubbed “the PF convention to elect new office bearers”. The use of a key government facility as the meeting’s venue, the heavy presence of state security normally reserved for the president, and the live broadcast of proceedings on the national television provided earliest prima facie evidence of the state’s involvement in this scheme. Under Hichilema’s rule, police only appear at opposition gatherings to disrupt not protect them, and the state-run broadcaster serves as the mouthpiece of the governing party. A day later, the convenors submitted a list of new office bearers, with Sampa as PF president, to the Registrar of Societies.

The same day, the leadership of the PF accused Sampa of gross indiscipline and expelled him from the party. They asked the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, to declare his seat vacant. Mutti, an ex-UPND lawyer, refused, saying that only the Constitutional Court has the authority to do so. Zambia’s constitution states that an expelled MP “shall not lose the seat until the expulsion is confirmed by a court, except…where the member does not challenge the expulsion in court.” Sampa has, to date, not filed such a challenge.

On 26 October, Sampa’s faction, which retains the support of only one or two MPs, wrote to the Speaker asking her to accept the changes it had made to the party’s leadership in parliament. For context, the constitution provides that “the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly shall elect a Leader of the Opposition from amongst the Members of Parliament who are from the opposition.”

On 30 October, the Clerk of the National Assembly Roy Ngulube wrote to the Registrar of Societies, Thandiwe Mhende, seeking clarity on the leadership of the PF. She responded the same day, saying that the process of confirming if Sampa’s faction had complied with the PF constitution “has not yet been completed”. “Kindly note that the office will give official notification of complete change as soon as the process is finalised,” she concluded in the correspondence that was received by Ngulube and not made public but has been seen by African Arguments.

Despite this ongoing process, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Collins Hikalinda, told the state-run ZNBC that they had received “a submission from the Patriotic Front, which ushered in Honourable Miles Sampa as its new president”. The following day, the Speaker accepted the proposed changes to the PF’s parliamentary leadership.

This sparked protests from at least 40 PF MPs who, alongside several independent lawmakers, notified the Clerk of the National Assembly on 3 November about their intention to impeach the Speaker for, among other charges, abrogating the Constitution. In a move that was widely seen as aimed at frustrating the impeachment motion, Speaker Mutti on 7 November issued 30-day suspensions to 19 of these MPs for alleged lawlessness.

Amidst intense public criticism that the Speaker had “gone rogue”, the Clerk of the National Assembly released a carefully-worded press statement on 7 November, stating that: “Before the announcement of the changes were made, the office of the Clerk wrote to the Registrar of Societies to confirm the office bearers of the Patriotic Front. In the response to the Clerk, the Registrar of Societies confirmed being in receipt of the new office bearers of the Patriotic Front, among whom was Mr Morgan Ng’ona as Secretary General”.

This misleading statement – the Registrar had indeed listed the submitted names but made it clear that “verification…has not yet been completed” – was the first official attempt to cover up the Speaker’s misconduct. The second occurred about a week later after Mhende, in fulfilment of a court order submitted by the PF, issued a printout of the electronic registration records showing that the office bearers of the PF had not been changed. This put Mutti and the UPND’s attempt to kill the PF in an awkward position. The government acted quickly.

Mhende was immediately removed from her position. Government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said the official was being transferred as “she had become inimical to the requirement of her office” and said that she had released “certain documents” to a PF lawyer that she was not supposed to have. This revelation seemed to confirm the authenticity of the printout, contradicting the Minister of Home Affairs who had earlier attempted to discredit it.

According to parliamentary sources, Mhende had been hesitant to accept the Sampa faction’s submission of new office bearers due to the lack of evidence they had complied with several articles of the PF constitution. Article 46, for instance, provides that a convention shall only be legal if it is attended by “up to 500 delegates from each province selected in accordance with rules made by the Central Committee” and “all members of the National Council”. Article 50 (1) explains that the National Council, which is also required to approve candidates for the party presidency prior to the convention, consists of “(a) Members of the Central Committee; (b) Members of the National Assembly; (c) Provincial Secretaries; (d) District Chairmen; District Secretaries; (f) District Chairmen and Committee members of the Women’s and Youth Leagues; (g) Senior officers from the Party’s National Headquarters.” Article 55 (c) stipulates that the national party chairperson must preside over the convention.

None of these requirements were met. Furthermore, the secretive nature of Sampa’s “convention” effectively excluded the other seven candidates who had expressed interest in standing for the PF presidency. This exclusion violated Article 60 of Zambia’s constitution, which obliges political parties to “respect the right of its members to participate in the affairs of the political party” by standing as candidates and voting.

Anatomy of a doctored letter
Well-placed parliamentary sources suggest that, on 14 November, Hichilema’s group started to manufacture evidence that the Registrar of Societies had completed Sampa’s verification process two weeks earlier and cleared the Speaker to effect the changes she had made to the PF’s leadership. For a start, the contents of the letter Mhende had written to the Clerk of the National Assembly on 30 October were altered. The original sentence stating that the “verification of the submission and attachments has not yet been completed” was amended to delete the words “not yet”. The final paragraph stating “Kindly note that the office will give official notification of complete change as soon as the process is finalised” was removed.

This done, Mhende’s deputy Jason Mwambazi, was made to sign the tampered letter on behalf of the Registrar of Societies. The letter nonetheless retained the 30 October date, a day on which Mhende was still in position and working – as confirmed by the original letter.

In what appears to have been a clumsily orchestrated move, this letter was leaked and widely publicised on UPND-aligned platforms. This was done for two possible reasons.

The first was to cast doubt on the Mhende’s integrity. If the letter was real, she would have known that the Sampa faction’s choices had been installed when she printed the electronic record of the (in this case, former) PF office bearers. An inconsistency in this narrative, however, is that two days after Mhende’s removal, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Infernal Security Dickson Matembo publicly admitted that his ministry were still having challenges completing the process of verifying Sampa’s submissions. “Once the process is completed, the nation will be informed,” he said.

The second reason for leaking the letter was to absolve Mutti by making it seem that she had changed the PF’s parliamentary leadership based on information provided by the Registrar of Societies. One of the biggest publicists of the altered letter was Laura Miti, a commissioner on Zambia’s Human Rights Commission and vociferous Hichilema supporter, who wrote on Facebook minutes after the leak: “[The letter] releases the Speaker from any blame. She is the only one in this matter who can ask – so what was I supposed to do?”

The government then appointed Mariah Mulenga, a junior legal officer under the Ministry of Home Affairs, to act as Registrar of Societies. A well-placed source at Cabinet Office told a leading private newspaper that Mulenga was only considered after the three officers immediately junior to the Chief Registrar of Societies declined the position.

“The structure is that there is the position of Chief Registrar, which is at Director level. Then follows Deputy Chief Registrar (Jason Mwambazi), then Principal Registrar who is followed by M & E Registrar (Ms Cecilia Malawo). After this, there is a level of support staff. But the powers that be have appointed a legal counsel, Maria Mulenga, who is at level four of the Registrar to act as Chief Registrar of Societies. Her job description has quickly been amended to include functions of Chief Registrar for purposes of effecting the changes which all the other senior officers refused to effect”, The Mast newspaper quoted an unnamed government source on 20 November.

Ten days later, the new acting Registrar of Societies wrote to Sampa’s lawyers confirming that the record of PF office bearers had finally been changed. Enclosed in the letter, publicised by Sampa and state media, was the list of office bearers in the form of an official electronic record. This time, the government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa did not protest that the Registrar of Societies had wrongly released the documents to lawyers.

Meanwhile, when PF leaders moved to challenge the legality of Sampa’s convention, the decisions his faction makes in the name of the party, or the Speaker’s actions, the judiciary kept postponing the cases. Even when Sampa was sued for criminal perjury and forgery of PF documents, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gilbert Phiri, Hichilema’s former lawyer, moved to block his prosecution.

Expulsions begin
Emboldened by support from Hichilema, Sampa’s faction has since moved to expel nine PF MPs for alleged gross indiscipline and insubordination. Those targeted are considered presidential hopefuls and have led the opposition to the PF takeover. The choice of the expelled MPs was made to intimidate them into submission and send a warning to the remaining lawmakers.

In case the nine MPs challenge the expulsions, the UPND has reportedly already lined up a few friendly judges. If the courts do not confirm the expulsion, Article 72 (6) of Zambia’s Constitution allows the victorious MP to either remain a member of their political party or retain their the seat as an independent. If, as expected, the expulsions are confirmed, by-elections will be held. In this instance, the Electoral Commission of Zambia, led by another ex-UPND lawyer, is expected to only accept the nomination of PF candidates who belong to Sampa’s faction.

Under these conditions, it is likely the UPND will win the by-elections. Their only opponents would be official PF contestants that lack legitimacy and poorly funded smaller opposition candidates. Hichilema is desperate to win these seats for several reasons. First, the UPND has no parliamentary representation in one or two of the provinces where the expelled MPs come from. Winning a few seats would fix this unwanted record and give the ruling party a cosmetic but important appearance of national character. Second, Hichilema’s party is about seven seats short of a the two-third majority needed in parliament to make changes to the constitution. Amendments could be made to make it easier for the president to gain re-election, extend presidential terms, or lift the immunity of former president Lungu. Third, winning seats from the opposition would be a step forwards in what the highly regarded retired Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu calls the “state-orchestrated murder of the PF”.

Zambia becoming a one-party state
I was an opponent of the PF’s undemocratic actions when it was in power and a regular critic of then President Lungu. But one does not have to support the PF to see that the absence of a viable opposition party will be a terrible development for Zambia’s multiparty democracy. Over the last decade, the country has evolved into a two-party system. Out of the 156 parliamentary seats directly elected under first-past-the-post, the UPND and PF share 142. If one of these parties disappears or if Hichilema succeeds in his efforts to obliterate the PF, Zambia will effectively be a one-party state.

The President, increasingly authoritarian and bidding for absolute power, has already done much to weaken the usual sources of resistance. He has co-opted into government bodies most of the critical voices from civil society that challenged Lungu’s authoritarian tendencies, packed the courts and electoral body with his own appointees, and secured the silence of Western actors who have traditionally condemned attacks on democracy.

The UPND and its supporters like arguing that Hichilema will easily retain power in 2026 not because he has delivered on his many campaign promises but because “there is no credible opposition”. What is clear is that his administration is systemically and ruthlessly crushing any semblance of opposition. As the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops recently pointed out, the police have blocked all public rallies called by opposition parties outside of by-elections, always citing unspecified security concerns or inadequate manpower, since 2021.

In addition to the ongoing theft of the PF, many of its presidential hopefuls have been saddled with court cases, while one of Hichilema’s supporters has petitioned the Constitutional Court to declare Lungu ineligible to stand 2026. Another promising candidate, Fred M’membe of the Socialist Party, has been targeted for electoral exclusion with multiple court cases out of which the UPND hopes to secure a dubious criminal conviction that would disqualify him from running in the next election. So committed to this outcome is Hichilema’s group that the DPP has personally travelled for M’membe’s court hearings outside Lusaka.

Lungu left weak formal institutions such as the judiciary, electoral commission, and police. Hichilema is weakening them even further by sapping any semblance of remaining professionalism. Herein lies the real danger. Once public trust in these and other institutions is totally eroded, opposition to the UPND may find expression in undemocratic means or informal outlets. Already, growing levels of frustration with the government’s failure to address the escalating cost-of-living crisis have left many areas, especially in towns and cities, teetering on the brink of social unrest. It may not take much to torch this simmering discontent. Not even Hichilema may survive the potential consequences of what he is, in effect, brewing.

Who, or what, will stop Hichilema?

Access to Information Act-Signing a death certificate against Access to Information

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

I have just had a detailed look at the proposed Access to Information Act.

I was surprised that it has more clauses providing restrictions, exemptions, limitations, out-of-bounds, and denials of access to information than providing and enabling access to information.

Further the provisions granting wide authority and discretion to information holders, means that useful and credible information required for purposes of pushing transparency and accountability will never be obtained or will be obtained far later after the facts or effects.

This law reminds me of the Public Order Act, which leaves powers to the Police justifying why a public rally cannot be held or the labour law requiring workers to go on strike.

It means stakeholders can never have a public rally or workers can never legal industrial strike despite the provisions of the law.
The reference to go to court to compel information holders to release the details required, while appearing like a solution, will become a hindrance as seeking court intervention in Zambia is extremely expensive and further, courts take forever to determine a matter.

If the Access to Information Act is passed, it is signing a death certificate against access to information….yet the politicians will thump their chests claiming and fooling us that Zambia has achieved a democratic milestone!…when infact not.

Unfortunately, the status quo will continue without passing a credible access to information law.

If President Hakainde Hichilema and his fellow UPND leaders are truly serious about providing access to information, they should withdraw the Bill and prepare a genuine access to information law.

Govt opens Attorney General’s office in Kabwe

By Oliver Chisenga(The Mast)

CENTRAL Province minister Princess Kasune has commended the Ministry of Justice for taking legal services closer to the people, making justice more accessible and fostering development in the region.

Speaking during the official launch of the Attorney General’s chambers in Kabwe on Tuesday, Kasune extended her gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for his dedication to ensuring that legal services are devolved to provinces.

“The establishment of the Attorney General’s Chambers in Kabwe stands as a testament to government’s firm belief in the principle of decentralisation – a belief that aims to empower our communities and ensure that their needs are met efficiently and effectively. Bringing legal services closer to the people is a crucial step towards achieving a more just society. The presence of the Attorney General’s Chambers in Kabwe will undoubtedly serve as a beacon of hope for those seeking legal assistance, advice and redress,’’ she said. ‘’I am happy to learn that one particular area where this development will have a tangible impact is in ensuring that the Constituency Development Fund contracts are cleared in good time here in Central Province, without having to travel to Lusaka. As a province we want to thank you for this because our people will not be spending money to travel to Lusaka to have their contracts cleared.”

Kasune said by having the chambers in Central Province, the government is facilitating better legal guidance, oversight and transparency in the allocation and implementation of projects funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“Moreover, having the legal expertise and guidance of the Attorney General’s Chambers readily available in Kabwe will not only address legal challenges but also promote a culture of compliance and adherence to the rule of law. It will also support our efforts to build a society founded on justice, fairness and accountability,” Kasune said.

Kasune appealed to all government agencies in the province to familiarise themselves with the Attorney General’s office.

“I want to assure you, that as a province, we stand ready to support this newly launched office. I call upon everyone in the province to ensure that the Attorney General’s Chambers in Kabwe becomes a symbol of justice, fairness and progress,” said Kasune.

And Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha expressed
delight at the opening of offices in various districts.

“The devolution of Attorney General’s offices to provinces is in accordance with Article 177(6) of the Constitution. Article 177 (6) of the Constitution of Zambia (amendment) act no. 2 of 2016 states that ‘the Attorney-General’s Chambers shall be devolved to the provinces and progressively to districts’,” said Kabesha.

“The establishment of this office is to ensure equitable access to justice for all; no one should be disadvantaged or denied adequate legal resources, an opportunity to seek legal advice, representation, or fair treatment under the law because of their geographical location. The devolution of the Attorney General’s Chambers to provinces, stands as a tangible embodiment of upholding fundamental human rights by providing legal services to government ministries, institutions, and agencies, thereby working toward the realisation of the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

GOVERNMENT DEMANDS RESPONSIBLE MINING IN SERENJE TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT

GOVERNMENT DEMANDS RESPONSIBLE MINING IN SERENJE TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT

Serenje, Wednesday (December 13, 2023)

Government has called for responsible mining in the manganese mineral rich Serenje District, Central Province, in order to safeguard the environment.

Serenje Town Council, Council Secretary, Milly Muluti, says Government is embracing the benefits of mining, but that stakeholders must also focus on sustainable development that ensures the well-being of citizens and preserve cultural heritage.

Ms Muluti said Serenje Town Council is committed to working collaboratively with Organisations like Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ), Government Officials and Industry Representatives to strike a balance that promotes economic growth while safeguarding the environment and the Rights of community members.

She said this in a speech read on her behalf by Serenje Town Council District Planning Officer, Mwamba Mukupa, at a Community Symposium organised by Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) through the Resilient Initiatives for Sustainable Environment (RISE) Project Supported by Bread for the World (BFTW) of Germany.

“As we engage in the discussions today, let us keep in mind the delicate balance we must strike. I extend my gratitude to CEJ for organising this Community Symposium, a platform bringing together key stakeholders to address Environmental challenges posed by mining in the region,” she said.

The Council Secretary said mining plays a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the District as it brings forth opportunities for development and growth, through providing jobs and contributing significantly to the global economy.

“However, with mining benefits comes responsibilities to ensure sustainable balanced future for communities. Let us first acknowledge the undeniable impacts that mining has on the environment,” she said.

Ms Muluti said it is imperative to address the ecological disruption, water pollution and habitat degredation.

“As a community, we must work hand in hand with the mining industry to implement stringent environmental practices to mitigate negative impacts of mining to preserve the beauty of Serenje for generations to come. Equally important is recognising the social impact that mining has on the vulnerable groups in communities. The vulnerable groups struggle with disruption of their daily lives, health Implecations, or challenges in accessing education. As we discuss the benefits of mining, we must also address challenges to find ways to inclusively distribute the benefits among all members of society,” she said.

And Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) Board Member Emmanuel Mutamba paid tribute to Bread for the World (BFTW) of Germany for providing resources towards the Resilient Initiatives for Sustainable Environment (RISE) Project being implemented by CEJ in Serenje and Sinazongwe Districts.

“I’m grateful to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), Village Headmen, the youth, Government Officials, Civic Leaders and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for attending the symposium,” he said.

Mr. Mutamba said mining can be beneficial if all systems were followed.

“We are well endowed with mineral resources but because we have little or no capacity to execute large scale mining, we had to attract those with financial muscles to help us mine. Us people in mining communities, there is a way we must benefit from mining houses. This Community Symposium is important to dissect ways in which we must benefit from mining. We must know how women, the youth, current children and future generations will benefit from mining,” he said.

He said the Community Symposium was necessary to understand challenges mining poses to water bodies in Serenje.

“We must introspect how agriculture will be affected if mining regulations are ignored. We need to know if mining will improve roads or worsen the situation. How will mining Improve the welfare of pupils in schools? Whatever we will discuss here will be taken as important recommendations,” he said.

Kanye West Wears Black KKK Mask While Previewing “Vultures” Tracks With North West, Lil Baby, & Freddie Gibbs

0

Kanye West is easily one of the biggest artists in the entire world and while most people aren’t big on him right now, that could change very soon.

Despite his controversies, new albums typically get fans excited. Overall, this is not a great reflection on society, but we digress. Right now, Ye is in the midst of his rollout for the new album Vultures. This is a project that fans have been excited about for quite some time now. Furthermore, it is a collaborative project with Ty Dolla $ign which makes it that much more exciting, at least potentially.

Last night, West had a massive listening party in Miami for Art Basel. This is something that fans had been anticipating ever since Ye made his way to the city.

Ultimately, the listening party did, in fact, happen last night. Consequently, a ton of fans showed up and Ye put on a show. As you will see in the videos below, Ye brought out a ton of guests. For instance, you could find Freddie Gibbs, Lil Baby, and even North West there. As it turns out, they all have features on the upcoming album.

As for West’s attire, there was one point where he could be seen wearing a black KKK mask. Overall, this imagery is fairly jarring although it is par for the course with some of the things he has been doing as of late. As for the features themselves, the idea of Freddie Gibbs on a Ye album is most definitely exciting.

It is going to be interesting to hear this song in its entirety on Friday. However, as some fans pointed out, there were songs that sounded unfinished, which means some delays could be on the horizon.

Only time will tell whether or not the album ends up dropping as promised. If it doesn’t, then Ye will have a lot to answer for. No matter what, this is a unique rollout that fans are curious about. Let us know what you think about all of this, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will always keep you informed.

Israel-Hamas war: All my 35 family members killed including mom, dad, and grandma – survivor

0

“He wants to know about his family but I don’t know what to say. ” Instead, I breathe deeply and try to avoid the question by talking about something else like a child would do.

Moein Abu Rezk is the only family member left for his nephew, Omar, who is very sick at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.

Omar’s left hand was cut off and he had big cuts on his right leg, smaller cuts on his chest and face, and a jaw that was not in the right place after an Israeli attack that Moein says killed 35 of his family members, including his mom, dad, and grandma.

Up until now, Moein has chosen not to tell Omar about their deaths because he’s concerned it might make his condition worse. He’s hoping to get Omar to Egypt for medical treatment with the help of the United Arab Emirates government and the Emirates Red Crescent.

“He needs to be given the information carefully so he doesn’t get shocked or lose control,” Moein told BBC Arabic in a series of voice messages on Sunday night.

“He hasn’t seen anyone, but he wants to know where his mom and grandma are. ”

But, Omar might not be able to get to the Egyptian border in an ambulance because there is a lot of fighting and bombing in Gaza’s Middle Area.

Israeli soldiers have split Gaza into two parts and surrounded Gaza City. They did this in the first two months of fighting against Hamas, which Israel, the UK, and other Western countries consider a terrorist group.

Soldiers and tanks are moving far into the southern city of Khan Younis. The main road from Deir al-Balah is now a “battlefield”, so people in the Middle Area can only use one supposedly safe route along the Mediterranean coast to evacuate.

A lot of people from the north of Gaza went to the Middle Area because the Israeli military told them to leave their homes and go south of the Wadi Gaza river two months ago.

The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7th. 1,200 people were killed and about 240 others were taken hostage. This led to the order to start the war.

Since that time, over 18,200 people have died in Gaza according to the area’s Hamas-controlled health department. Omar is one of over 49,000 people who have been reported injured.

The Israeli army is working to find and destroy terrorists and their weapons. They have targeted more than 22,000 sites since the war began.
Omar is with his uncle Moein Abu Rezk at a hospital in Deir al-Balah, in the middle of the Gaza Strip.

Moein told BBC Arabic that Omar and his family were at his grandmother’s house in Nuseirat camp, near Deir al-Balah, when it was bombed by the Israeli military without any warning.

“We have never seen missiles like these before. ” He remembered the missile falling and destroying all the houses in the area.

“Thankfully, the house had a hole and Omar fell through it. ” But his left arm was very badly hurt and had to be cut off right away.

“On Saturday, he lost a lot of blood and his haemoglobin levels dropped, so he needed to go to surgery to get a blood transfusion. ”

Moein said the hospital was really bad. They couldn’t find a bed for Omar even though he was very hurt. He had to wait in a hallway while doctors and nurses did their best to help him.

“We don’t have enough medical equipment and tools, so we have to find practical solutions to deal with the situation instead of using the best medical methods. ”

“We don’t have any medicine for the pain, so we’re trying to make him laugh to help him feel better. ”

Moein agreed that this way only worked sometimes but said, “We don’t have any other choice. ”

He said he hopes that Omar will go to the Rafah border with Egypt next Thursday. Then he will go to a special hospital for treatment.

Lena Shakora, her husband, and three young sons have managed to stay safe from the Israeli bombing, but she said they are still going through a very scary and difficult time.

They left their home in Sheikh Radwan district in Gaza City and are now staying in a house in a farming area near Deir al-Balah with their family.

Every morning, I remember that there is a war and that people don’t have enough food to eat. It’s really hard to be forced out of your home and have no food,” Lena told BBC Arabic on Sunday night.

My family and I are in a room with 40 people and all the windows are broken because of the bombing. We are essentially sitting outside. It’s really cold and people feel embarrassed.

Lena said her sons hurt their backs from carrying heavy containers of water. Furthermore, the water is not clean because the treatment plants and pumps are not working due to a shortage of fuel, which makes the situation even more difficult.

The family had to eat bad food because the stores were empty and they didn’t get any help.

We really hope to have some flour to make bread, and we also want to use clean wood to bake it.

“Many people search for wood wherever they can find it. ” She said the bread is not safe to eat because it was made using wood from a bombing site.

The UN said they couldn’t give things to people outside the city of Rafah because it’s too dangerous and they are not allowed to move around freely.

Far-right militants in Germany accused of plotting coup

0

German lawyers accuse 27 people of planning a violent takeover because of their extreme right-wing views.

The suspects are accused of being part of a group called Reichsbürger, which is not well-known.

The group’s members didn’t like the government and the democratic constitution, according to the accusation.

Most of them are friends of Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, a leader in the Reichsbürger movement from a noble family.

The prosecutors have accused 27 people of trying to remove Germany’s democratic government.

Plans were made for a coup to start in summer 2021.

The plan was to take control by attacking Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, with a small group of armed people. The attack will start when we get a signal, like if Queen Elizabeth II dies.

The people who were accused of planning the coup had already decided how their new government would work.

Prince Reuss was going to be the leader of the country. When he started his job, he would talk with the countries that won World War II to make a peace agreement. Prince Reuss attempted to talk to Russian government officials to get their help with the coup, say the prosecutors.

Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, who was a member of a far-right political party, was going to be appointed as the justice minister. Prosecutors said she allowed other people involved in the plan to enter the parliamentary buildings.

It is said that the people who wanted to rebel tried to convince soldiers and police to join them.

The group made lists of people they didn’t like. Members knew that their plans would cause people to die, according to the charges.

The people had to promise not to tell anyone about what happened. People who broke the law would have been killed for betraying their country.

The people who were thought to be planning something had a lot of guns and bullets – about 380 guns and 148,000 bullets.

Some people were arrested by the police in December.

Germany’s internal intelligence agency, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, says that there are around 23,000 people who support the Reichsbürger movement in the country.

‘Cyber-attack’ targets mobile network of Ukraine

0

Ukraine’s biggest cellphone company, Kyivstar, says it has been attacked by a strong hacker.

Some people don’t have phone or internet, and the air raid sirens in one city don’t work. The boss of Kyivstar suggested that Russia might be to blame.

Ukraine’s police is looking into the situation. Moscow has not said anything.

The Kyivstar network has about 24 million people who use their mobile phones and about a million people who use their home internet.

On Tuesday morning, there were reports that people and businesses couldn’t use their mobile phones or internet.

The air raid sirens in Sumy, a city in the northeast, did not work because of the power failure.

The military in the area said they will use police and emergency vehicles to warn people if a missile or drone is coming.

PrivatBank, the biggest bank in Ukraine, said that some of their cash machines are not working and may be unreliable or have no internet connection.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is looking into the matter.

SBU is looking into the possibility that Russian special services are responsible for the hacker attack.

Russia has not said anything and nobody has admitted to doing it.

Kyivstar asked the police for help because they were being illegally interfered with.

The CEO of the company, Oleksandr Komarov, also said that Russian actors might be responsible.

“He said there are many parts to the war with Russia, and one of them is online. ”

“We are trying to fix the communication as fast as we can,” he said. “We will also give money to customers who were affected. ”

The person in charge said that no one’s private information was illegally accessed.

In February 2022, Russia started a big war with Ukraine, and it has been going on for over a year now.

The company from the Netherlands, Veon, said it will work with Kyivstar to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again by adding more security.

Ukraine’s military intelligence says they did a cyber-attack on Russia’s tax system.

“During a special mission, Ukraine’s military intelligence successfully accessed a heavily guarded central server of the federal tax service,” said a statement on Telegram.

Russian efforts to fix the services have been going on for four days now.

$1.2 million donated to charities by Prince Harry and Meghan

0

Prince Harry and Meghan’s organization called Archewell gave $1. 2m (which is about £950,000) to charities this year, according to their report.

The foundation supported various projects, such as assisting Afghan women in the US and stopping false information, with the motto “Show up, do good”.

There was also support for a charity that Princess Diana made famous for helping people who work in mines.

US tax documents show that the amount of donations this year is the same as last year. Archewell now has more than $11 million in funds.

A lot has been written about this famous couple, but the report from the Archewell Foundation in 2023 and their tax information in 2022 show exactly how much money Prince Harry and Meghan made from their jobs in the United States.

Archewell was started by Prince Harry and Meghan when they left their royal duties and moved to the US. It has been running for three years and does charity work, as well as making movies and shows.

This year’s tax paperwork for 2022 shows that the foundation made donations of $1. 2 million This includes $100,000 given to the Halo Trust, a charity that clears mines and was previously backed by Princess Diana.

Prince Harry’s mom brought attention to the charity when she visited a project to clear landmines in Angola in 1997.

Prince Harry spoke to people from the Halo Trust who were helping in Ukraine after Russia invaded it.

Other projects that received funding were a “gender justice” project in Washington, a civil-rights charity, and a project that promotes responsible use of technology, which each received amounts of $200,000, $125,000, and $100,000 respectively.

Prince Harry and Meghan appeared in a video promoting the causes and campaigns they supported in 2023. They donated $1. 2 million, but the exact amount hasn’t been confirmed yet for this year’s taxes.

This project helps Afghan women settle down in the US and build stronger ties with their local communities.

Some people are helping a new organization that wants to stop fake news in places in the US where there are no local newspapers. These places are called “news deserts”.

Archewell started with $13 million and raised another $7 million in the next two years. It has also given away $5. 4 million in grants between 2021 and 2023.

The latest tax forms indicate that Prince Harry and Meghan don’t get paid from the charity, but they do pay over $640,000 annually to their staff.

Harvard president’s position safe despite her appearance in Congress

0

Harvard University’s president, Claudine Gay, will continue to stay in her job even though there has been a lot of talk about her recent appearance in front of Congress.

Dr Gay was being asked to leave her job because she didn’t say whether students who wanted to hurt Jewish people would get in trouble.

However, in a letter over the weekend, almost 700 staff members showed their support for her.

On Tuesday, the school’s board said they still support her as the leader.

The group in charge at Harvard University thinks President Gay is the best leader to help our community recover and deal with the big issues we are facing.

“At this hard time, we all support President Gay,” said the 13-member board.

Just a few days ago, it was announced that Dr. Gay will continue to be the president, after the University of Pennsylvania’s head, Elizabeth Magill, said she would quit because people were upset about what she said in Congress.

Last week, Dr. Gay spoke with Ms. Magill and the president of MIT, Sally Kornbluth, at a meeting in the House of Representatives about antisemitism.

When Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik asked Dr. Gay some tough questions, Dr. Gay said she thinks it’s terrible for people to call for the killing of Jews. But she also said whether it breaks Harvard’s rules about bullying and harassment depends on the situation.

She said sorry in a interview with Harvard’s school newspaper, the Crimson, soon after.

She said that when words make the distress and pain worse, she doesn’t understand how you could feel anything other than regret.

The Harvard Corporation said that calls for genocide are terrible and that Dr. Gay should have quickly and clearly condemned them.

However, the school found out that the president of Harvard University said sorry for how she acted when she spoke to Congress.

The board said that Harvard’s goal is to learn more, do research, and make new discoveries that will help solve big problems in society. They believe that President Gay will lead Harvard in this important work.

Almost 700 teachers at Harvard signed a letter asking the university to protect academic freedom and keep Dr. Gay as president, despite political pressure.

At the same time, over 70 lawmakers, mostly from the Republican party, asked Dr. Gay to quit her job, saying her responses at the meeting were terrible.

She became the first black president of the university in July, making history after 368 years.

Ukraine will suffer if US help is discontinued – Olena Zelenska

0

Without important help from the US military, there is a big risk that Ukraine could eventually lose the war, even if not right away.

President Zelensky is in Washington to ask Congress to approve a $60 billion aid package. It’s been delayed because of a disagreement over US border security. He hopes to convince them to pass it.

On Sunday, the first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, said that Ukraine is in serious danger and needs ongoing help from America to survive.

Western authorities told the BBC that they believe the US government will find a solution to the current problem. President Biden may achieve his goals, but people will still have concerns about the position of the US. During a year when a president is chosen, things will be even more unpredictable.

America has given the most military help to Ukraine, not Europe.

Europe is on its way to giving more economic help to Ukraine than the US. The US has a strong military support lead.

The Kiel Institute keeps track of how much support countries give. They say the US has given €44bn of military equipment. Germany, the biggest giver in Europe, has given €18 billion.

The US has been very important in helping Ukraine in its war and has also been the main organizer of that help.

Jack Watling from the Royal United Services Institute says it plainly: “Europe can’t replace what the US was giving. ”

He thinks Europe missed the chance to make more weapons and equipment in the last two years.

“He says there isn’t enough manufacturing capacity because European countries haven’t invested properly. ”

For instance, Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the European Union won’t be able to give Ukraine one million artillery shells by next March. Actually, it will only send Ukraine less than half of what it said it would. At this time, Ukraine needs at least 2. 4 million artillery shells each year to keep fighting in the war.

Most of the countries in Europe that are part of Nato still don’t spend the 2% of their national income on defense, as they were supposed to do nearly ten years ago.

This week, UK’s Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that Europe needs to do more. He mentioned that aside from Ukraine, we can’t keep relying on the US to always help Europe.

Russia’s economy during a time of war

Compare how Europe reacted to Russia’s actions.

Russia has already changed its economy to focus on preparing for war. Western officials believe that almost 40% of Russia’s money will be spent on defense and security next year. This is more than what they will spend on health and education combined.

One year ago, Russia got around 40 Shahed attack drones from Iran. Now they think they are making about 300 each month.

By the end of 2022, Russia could only make about 40 big missiles every month. Now it is expected to be earning one hundred, even with sanctions from western countries.

It has increased how many artillery shells it makes, and got more from North Korea when its supply was running out.

However, Russia is still having a hard time replacing the equipment and people it has lost. Western officials think that Russia had around a thousand soldiers getting hurt or killed every day during November, just in their attack on Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine.

Tiredness from fighting in a war

A year ago, people in the West were hopeful because of the early successes of a Ukrainian counter attack. But now, that hope has mostly gone away.

Ukraine’s summer attack did not go as planned. It didn’t achieve its goal of breaking through Russia’s main defenses in the south.

Mr Watling thinks that the war will last a long time and that it will make people tired and change how they think about taking risks.

The Kiel Institute reported that the amount of new aid promised to Ukraine from August to October this year was the lowest it has been since January 2022. Out of 42 countries that give aid, only 20 have promised to give new aid packages during this time – which is almost 90% less than last year.

Most of the people who support Ukraine, at least when they say in public, say they are still determined.

However, some countries are having trouble providing as much military aid as before because they have used up a lot of their own supplies.

We don’t know yet how much help Ukraine will get from the Netherlands in the future, after Geert Wilders’ right-wing party did well in the election. The Dutch have been an important part of the group that said they would give Ukraine F-16 jets.

The effect on future activities.

These questions about future aid supplies won’t have a quick effect on the battlefield.

One person in charge of the western side says it is unlikely that there will be any big progress from either side in the next few months. Russia and Ukraine are focused on defending themselves and using a lot of resources for attacking.

However, Ukraine may have to limit the amount of ammunition they use in the next few months. This could weaken their military forces even more.

Jake Sullivan, who works for the White House, told the New York Times that Ukraine’s ability to defend its airspace could be affected. He said that the US can’t send air defense systems to Ukraine anymore.

That alarm is being given because Russia is expected to start attacking important buildings and systems in Ukraine more often in the next few weeks.

Not being clear about getting help from the US military could cause another problem. Watling just got back from Ukraine, and he says that the uncertainty about aid is already making it hard for Ukraine to make plans.

He says the current problem in the US Congress is making it hard for Ukraine to figure out its next moves in battle and to get more support from the west.

Macron’s government in disarray after failure of immigration bill

The French President Emmanuel Macron‘s government is having a problem because all the other parties joined together to stop an important immigration law from passing.

Members of Parliament from different political parties, including those on the far right, far left, and moderate side, voted on Monday to say no to the proposed law.

The liberal side said the rules were too strict, and the conservative side said they weren’t strict enough.

After losing, the Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said he would leave his job.

Seen as someone who is strict about immigration, he really liked the proposed law. But Mr Macron said no to his resignation.

The government said the bill would help manage immigration and make it easier for migrants to fit in.

The new law would have made it easier for the government to send away migrants who are in prison for five years or more, and it would have also made it harder for migrants to bring their family to France.

It was not as strict as the Senate’s proposal, which would have made it much harder for migrants to get healthcare and benefits.

Before the vote, Mr. Darmanin said on a social media platform that if the bill passes, the government would be able to send “very dangerous” foreigners, such as drug dealers, out of the country.

However, he was not successful in getting opposition MPs to support him, as different groups voted against the bill. Members of the National Rally, France Unbowed, the Republicans, and some smaller parties joined together to beat the government. They got 270 votes, while the government got 265.

Before the vote, Arthur Delaporte, a member of the Socialist party, said his party would vote no on the bill because he thought it was unfair, wrong, and could take away people’s freedom.

Mr Macron’s middle-of-the-road Renaissance party did not win most of the seats in parliament in the June 2022 elections. Since then, the government often can’t get enough votes in parliament.

The government can change the bill or cancel it completely. Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne cannot use a special way to make laws without a vote to approve this version.

Dangote Refinery Receives Its Maiden Crude Cargo

A major step towards boosting Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and attaining energy security (self-sufficiency)

LAGOS, Nigeria, December 8, 2023/ — In a major step towards boosting Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and attaining energy security (self-sufficiency), Dangote (www.Dangote.com) Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals plant has purchased 1 million barrels of Agbami crude grade from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO), one of the largest trading companies in

The STASCO cargo contained 1 million barrels from Agbami and sailed to Dangote Refinery’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) where it was discharged into the refinery’s crude oil tanks.

The maiden 1 million barrels, which represent the first phase of the 6 million barrels of crude oil to be supplied to Dangote Petroleum Refinery by a range of suppliers, should sustain the initial 350,000 barrels per day to be processed by the facility. The next four cargoes will be supplied by the NNPC in two to three weeks and the final of the six cargoes will be supplied by ExxonMobil.

This supply will facilitate the initial run of the refinery as well as kick-start the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG before subsequently progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

This latest development will play a pivotal role in alleviating the fuel supply challenges faced by Nigeria as well as the West African countries.

Designed for 100% Nigerian crude with the flexibility to process other crudes, the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery can process most African crude grades as well as Middle Eastern Arab Light and even US Light tight oil as well as crude from other countries.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery can meet 100% of the Nigeria’s requirement of all refined products, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet, and also have surplus of each of these products for export.

The refinery was built to take crude through its two SPMs located 25 kilometres from the shore and to discharge petroleum products through three separate SPMs. In addition, the refinery has the capacity to load 2,900 trucks a day at its truck loading gantries.

Dangote Refinery has a self-sufficient marine facility with the ability to handle the largest vessel globally available. In addition, all products from the refinery will conform to Euro V specifications.

The refinery is designed to comply with US EPA, European emission norms, and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent norms as well as African Refiners and Distribution Association (ARDA) standards.

President of Dangote Group, Mr. Aliko Dangote stated: “We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone. This is an important achievement for our country as it demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver large capital projects. Our focus over the coming months is to ramp up the refinery to its full capacity. I look forward to the next significant milestone when we deliver the first batch of products to the Nigerian market.”

Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr. Osagie Okunbor stated: “We welcome the startup of a refinery that is designed to produce gasoline, diesel, and low-sulphur fuels for Nigeria and across West Africa and are happy to be enabling it.”

South Africa: African Development Bank approves $1 billion guarantee from the United Kingdom to support SA’s Just Energy Transition

0

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, 11 December 2023 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/-The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group has approved a $1 billion guarantee program in collaboration with the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), which will allow the Bank to increase its lending capacity in support of South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET).

Developed in close collaboration with the government of the Republic of South Africa, the program will support projects aligned with South Africa’s JET investment plan, such as transmission and grid-balancing storage, renewable energy generation, energy efficiency, rehabilitation of municipal electricity delivery, green hydrogen, new electric vehicles. It also includes projects addressing the “just” dimension, notably in the Province of Mpumalanga, in the north-eastern part of the country, bordering Swaziland and Mozambique.

The approval, coming during COP28, where ramping-up climate finance is an issue, is timely and topical. African Development Bank Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, Dr. Kevin Kariuki observed: “this is another innovative operation that reaffirms AfDB’s leadership in crafting financial solutions to increase access to climate finance for Africa’s low carbon development and net zero ambitions.”

Melinda Bohannon, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office Director General of Humanitarian and Development stated,” FCDO remains committed to the Just Energy Transition Partnership with South Africa, which supports green growth and jobs, improves energy security, and helps South Africa achieve its carbon reduction ambitions as set out in its National Determined Contribution. This guarantee will unlock funds for projects within the remit of South Africa’s recently released Just Energy Transition implementation plan. This comes alongside the recently significantly increased grant offer from the International Partners Group, and we are using some of those grants to help develop an investment project pipeline”.

Mmakgoshi Lekhethe, Deputy-Director General for Asset and Liability Management in South Africa’s National Treasury commented, “We are pleased with the approval by the AfDB Board of the guarantee framework that will increase South Africa’s access to funding from the Bank by $1 billion. This marks an important partnership between our government, the UK and AfDB to enhance our ability to implement South Africa’s just energy transition in a way that is just and socially responsible. We look forward to working closely with the AfDB on the preparation and financing of a pipeline of programs and projects under our just transition priority areas, including those identified in the JET Implementation Plan. As a development bank with vast experience in just transition in the continent, the AfDB is an ideal partner for us on this important initiative”.

Max Ndiaye, Director of Syndications, Co-financing and Client Solutions, noted previous collaboration between the Bank and FCDO, and applauded this transaction as further demonstration of the Bank’s continued efforts to heed the G20 recommendations on capital adequacy that call for increased collaboration and additional shareholder support for the balance sheet optimization of MDBs.

“By enabling the Bank to increase its lending capacity, this landmark guarantee agreement will greatly support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition,” noted African Development Bank Director General for Southern Africa, Leila Mokaddem. “The African Development Bank remains committed to accompanying South Africa on this important journey,” she added.

How Man Utd’s worst-ever Champions League campaign unfolded

0

LONDON-BBC Sports)-Manchester United’s return to the Champions League was part of the body of work that suggested Erik ten Hag was the transformative figure who had blown the cobwebs away from a dilapidated Old Trafford.

It was meant to be proof that United were back where they belonged after the missteps and misery of Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho – even though he won the League Cup and Europa League – and latterly Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ten Hag even had tangible success with a League Cup win in his first season, but if this wretched Champions League campaign has been any measure of the current status of Manchester United and their manager, the great transformer is now closer to being a busted flush.

This has been a shocking campaign, a chastening dose of cold reality that saw United finish bottom of a group they would have welcomed when the draw was made, fourth behind Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

The Champions League is the most unforgiving of environments. Every United flaw, and they are certainly not short of them, has been brutally exposed from the start.

And it all ended in the most timid of circumstances, a United side who should have come out swinging losing 1-0 to a Bayern side with nothing to play for, Ten Hag’s players mustering a mere one shot on target in the process.

It was all a far cry from the Old Trafford nights of old when supporters were glued to their seats until the final whistle sounded.

Thousands of United fans had given up and left long before the end here and who could blame them?

‘United’s Champions League comeback has been a shambles’
The statistics damn United and underline the lack of organisation, tactical acumen, nous and basic quality that have characterised their Champions League return and most of their season.

United’s four points from six games is their lowest in any Champions League campaign, while the 15 goals conceded is the most by a Premier League side in any group stage of the competition.

All manner of inquests into this dismal failure can be conducted, but the bottom line is this Manchester United side are not fit for the purpose of success – a problem exacerbated by an uncanny knack of blasting themselves in both feet at the worst possible time.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has had a nightmare campaign, at fault in the 4-3 loss away to Bayern, poor in the home defeat against Galatasaray then quite simply awful in the 3-3 draw with the Turkish side in Istanbul, gifting Hakim Ziyech two goals from routine free-kicks. That was a result that ensured even victory here against Bayern might not have been enough for United.

As it was, United never even threatened to keep their own side of the bargain.

Few tears were shed when goalkeeper David de Gea left United after 12 years last summer, but Onana has done nothing to suggest the Spaniard has been adequately replaced.

United held a two-goal lead before losing 4-3 in Copenhagen and twice held a similar advantage before sharing the points when visiting Galatasaray.

There was a lack of discipline as Marcus Rashford was sent off with United 2-0 up in Denmark, the inexplicable catalyst for a collapse from a position of control to another damaging defeat.

All in all, United’s Champions League comeback has been a shambles.

Old rivals Bayern put them out of their misery. In reality, United’s Champions League return was probably washed up even before a ball was kicked on a miserable, forgettable occasion.

Bayern didn’t even have to break sweat
On a night when United needed to at least show a willing to save themselves, they managed five shots in all. Five shots on a night when victory was a must.

Yes, a first-half groin injury for captain Harry Maguire and a hamstring problem that meant Luke Shaw could not come out for the second half hampered their efforts, but there can be no excuses. This is a desperately poor team when set against the standards Manchester United aspire to.

This was not even a classic Bayern side. Good but not great – certainly not a team you would risk a huge amount on in terms of them winning the Champions League.

Bayern, however, were still able to deal with United without breaking sweat in a game that was actually neither here nor there for Thomas Tuchel’s team. You were left with the impression that if there had suddenly been something riding on this for the Bundesliga champions they would have been able to slip through the gears and dismiss United without too much fuss.

If there were any flashes of pace and urgency, they actually came from the side that did not even need to show it.

The home fans were remarkably patient given the meagre fare on offer. The jeers at the final whistle were more in resignation than anger.

United have proved a few things throughout this ill-fated campaign. None of them good.

Man Utd v Bayern Munich
Captain Bruno Fernandes (left) is suspended for Manchester United’s next match – away at Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday
Finishing bottom of the group ‘the right outcome’
Manchester United have proved that for now they do not belong in this elite company. Their final position in Group A does not do them a disservice. It is the right outcome. They proved the likes of Bayern, Manchester City and Real Madrid are out of their league.

And at the heart of it all is Ten Hag, facing an increasing struggle to tame this unwieldy football beast, looking more and more like a manager who is sinking, scrambling to make sense of how those slivers of optimism from last season have been so quickly replaced by despair and despondency.

Ten Hag must seek improvement in another unforgiving environment, at Anfield on Sunday against Premier League leaders Liverpool, who inflicted a historic 7-0 thrashing on United last season.

And he will almost certainly have to do it without the injured Shaw and Maguire, along with injured captain Bruno Fernandes.

If United hoped coming back to the Champions League stage would offer confirmation that they were edging back towards the top table, the fact they were not even good enough to secure the safety net of consolation offered up by the Europa League tells them exactly where they actually stand.

LUSAKA GUY KILLS HIMSELF, LEAVES LONG ARTICLE TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF

His name is Nathan Mithi

He Wrote:

If you are seeing this then am probably DEAD!

Don’t Skip but lean from me.

My new MTN line it’s all in there
Even in death I still leave you with something

SAD:Lusaka man takes his own life to escape his wife’s pr0miscuity!

Alleged woman’s pr0miscuity has led a Lusaka man to commit su!c!de.
Nathan Mithi could not stomach the fact that his wife had several s£xual partners despite being married.

According to his social media post which he published on his Facebook page yesterday, Nathan, has lived his married life in humiliation and embarrassment due to his wife’s behavior.

Nathan who was married to Sabby for over 9years now, claimed that he was not a good husband to his wife because of her lifestyle.

He highlighted that his wife’s behavior was barbaric and everything about her was off.

“One day, Sabby attempted to have s£x with my friend identified as ‘JM Brown’ during the day in our matrimonial house and this was the first time I caught her in the act”, part of Nathan’s facebook post said.

“It was me against the world so I could not help it. Instead, I decided to have a lot of girls at this point”,he said.

“My main reason for doing such was because I convinced myself that I will find a better woman than Sabby but I just loved her too much that I couldn’t let go of her and decided to give her a second chance”, Nathan said.

Sabby is believed to have changed into a person who prioritizes s£x, money and beer over her own life.

Nathan posted that his wife was married to her but she kept in searching for well to do men (a Mr Right) in order to achieve her best life.

“When she leaves the house, she would block me everywhere to prevent me from calling her phone”, Nathan explained.

“The sad part is that anytime she would be away from home, her mother and sister will have the first cut of a phone call from her with the new numbers that she hid from me”, Nathan further explained.

“I regret marrying for looks because this lady has k!lled me before my time.”

A relationship based on physical appearance often has an expiration date, hence the need to look into many factors that play success in any relationship.

Nathan is survived by 5 children, 3 of whom are his own, with two suspected to have different fathers.

Political Tribalism versus Eastern Province: Nothing has changed- Chris Zumani

Political Tribalism versus Eastern Province: Nothing has changed

By Chris Zumani Zimba

1. If you analyze Vote pattern since 1964 to 2021 for this country, it clearly shows that Eastern province has never been involved into political tribalism;

2. Such an accusation would even offend Kenneth Kaunda in his grave because Easterners were his main neutral allies and fire extinguishers when political tribalism greeted the UNIP era;

3. If you analyze RB and ECL’s election results who are past presidents from the region, you will speedily realize that they did not get the lion’s share from their own relatives in eastern province;

4. For example, Sata got huge votes in Eastern Province against their own son RB in 2011 while in 2021, Lungu slimely won eastern province by merely 51% while HH got 49% ;

5. Eastern province is home to multiple ethnic groups and tribes such as Senga, Ngoni, Chewa, Tumbuka, Bisa, Kunda, etc which makes practicing political tribalism almost impossible;

6. Even as you travel in the province, local languages, traditions and cultural practices change from one place to another making political tribalism impossible because the people are not one ethnic group;

7. KK used to love and call the region “Eastern Power” purely because he was proud of its agricultural tenacity and developmental heritage. The colonialists had similar feelings and experiences with the province;

8. KK’s famous liberation song of nationalism, unity and political togetherness was composed by Easterners- “Tiyende Pamodzi, ndi Mutima Umodzi”. This song became a liberation song in Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania;

9. Anyone from a province with such high political heritage of uniting everyone and promoting “One Zambia, One Nation” based on hosting different tribes and languages can only be blamed to be so foolish if they want to champion political tribalism;

10. Therefore, it is true that “Eastern province arise and unit as One Movement“ is surely a developmental and social movement meant to mobilize and coordinate the collective wisdom, knowledge, experiences and skills of people of the region for the betterment and prosperity of the province;

MUKANDILA BLASTS COPS OVER TUTWA’S MEMORIAL CANCELATION

…says Zambia is slowly turning into police state

Lusaka, Tuesday, December 12, 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Opposition Patriotic Front (PF) member Celestine Mambula Mukandila has blasted the police over the cancellation of the late Tutwa Ngulube memorial last week.

Mr Mukandila, a Lusaka lawyer said the country is now beginning to see signs of Zambia becoming a police state.

He lamented when he featured on Millennium TV’s “The Pulse” yesterday that government of saints is not allowing any form of processions.

“We all know that we were supposed to hold the memorial service for honourable Tutwa Ngulube in Kabwe. A lot of us were invited to go and join the family to just celebrate the life of Tutwa and the unveiling of the tomb,” he said.

“So it was very unfortunate to see a scenario where the police decided to approach the family and cancel the memorial service of the late parliamentarian, without giving any reason as to why they decided to do that. So the police in their usual rhetoric, they just indicated that for security reasons. So unfortunately, these are individuals who decided to give an excuse of saying for security reasons we are cancelling this, but they provided a lot of these patrol vehicles…patrolling the hotel for the former parliamentarian.”

Mr Mukandila narrated that over 300 police officers were moving round just to try and stop people from attending the memoriał.

He said it was very unfortunate because there is no reason as to why the police decided to do that.

“But clearly it shows that we are now begging to see manifestations of Zambia becoming a police state. Because clearly, the leadership of the country is not allowing any form of procession. But it is a clear show that they just wanted to intimidate Zambian citizens, they wanted to intimidate the Patriotic Front members and that in itself shows how the democratic space in this country is shrinking,” he said.

“It is extremely unfortunate, but I think the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia has guaranteed our rights and freedoms. Freedoms of assembly and all. So there was a clear breach that was witnessed as of the day before yesterday. It is unfortunate that the police are operating as though they are robots, where they are getting instructions from a remote control, forgetting that this country is a democracy. Police should remember that UPND is in office only for the period of five years, God forbid that they will even make it to another five years.”

Rick Ross Calls Out Jada Pinkett Smith Over 2Pac Revelation: “Let Him Rest”

In a recent BET Talks interview, Rick Ross didn’t hold back. He addressed Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent comments about 2Pac’s battle with Alopecia, a condition she also shares. Ricky Rozay himself humorously put Smith on blast, emphasizing the need to let the rap legend rest in peace. Ross, while expressing his frustration with a touch of humor, struggled with the pronunciation of “Alopecia.” He made light of the situation by continuing his remarks: “At the end of the day, come on man, come on Jada. Let 2Pac rest in peace. Appaleesha — what did she say he got?”

Upon a correction from the host, Ross continued with a light-hearted tone, “Tell me what this is? But we ain’t need to know that. Dawg a legend. He been dead 30 years. Apaleesha? Alopecia.” In addition to his humorous take on the situation, the MMG mogul offered his own suggestion for Smith’s revelations, saying, “She should’ve told us a Will [Smith] story. Talk about your husband, baby. You married him. Tell us how you fell walking down the carpet one time and we ain’t know you ain’t have on no panties or something.”

Ross’s comments reflect a sentiment shared by many fans and fellow artists who believe that certain details about 2Pac’s personal life should be left in the past to honor his legacy. As the debate around the appropriate boundaries of discussing departed icons continues, Rick Ross adds his voice to those advocating for preserving the memory of the legendary rapper without unnecessary details. Moreover this isn’t the first time he’s said something about wanting Jada to remain quiet.

In an interview last month with Rolling Stone, the rapper didn’t hold back. He expressed sentiments about Jada’s book tour, and how he disapproved. “I don’t think I agree with Jada Pinkett,” he said. “To me, she’s psychologically lost and needs some counseling. Jesus! What are you going to tell us next? When you tell us you haven’t been together in six years, you haven’t had sex in this many years, you don’t have a prenuptial agreement — OK, what’s next?” Do you agree with Rick Ross on this subject? Rick Ross Offers 50 Cent $2 Million For G-Unit Rappers Music Catalog

0

Rick Ross is taking his trolling game to the next level as he seemingly insulted 50 Cent’s album Beg For Mercy, which he said is worth around $500,000, and offered to buy it from the G-Unit rapper and television mogul.

During a video posted to his Instagram account, Rick Ross said he had an offer for 50 Cent to buy the catalogs of the artists Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo, which he offered for $1.5 million.

“I got a business offer for the diabolical genius. I read yesterday that Young Buck’s catalog is worth $700- $25,000 for the entire catalog. I can only assume that Lloyd Bank’s catalog is worth about the same so I say let’s make it – throw Tony Yayo in there I give you $1.5 million,” Ross said.

Continuing with a straight face, he also dissed 50 Cent, saying that he would make an offer for one of his best-selling albums. “I don’t need the entire G-Unit catalog but Beg For Mercy. Let’s keep it simple, I’ll give you another 500k for that. The masters for that so $2 million dollars I’m making a business offer to the diabolical genius,” Rozay said.

Beg for Mercy is G-Unit’s debut album released in 2003 and the second album after 50 Cent’s successful ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ solo album release.

The album featured 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Tony Yayo, and cameos from The Game, who newly joined the label. The project sold 377,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 after 2Pac’s Tupac: Resurrection, The Black Album by Jay-Z. It later sold 330,000 copies in its 2nd week and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It remained on the chart, selling 195,000 units in its 3rd week.

Overall, the album sold around 2.7 million units in the U.S. and is almost 3x platinum certified by the Recording Industry Association of America.

50 Cent has not reacted to Rick Rock’s clowning his album, but the rapper seems to be recovering after an ultra-successful Last Lap Tour Performance in Brisbane, Australia.

It’s unclear if Rick Ross is serious or just trolling his longtime rival in rap, 50 Cent, who has made him a consistent target on social media. Just last week, Fifty targeted Rozay in his social media fury against Diddy by linking to Maybach Music Group chief to the Bad Boy Records rapper’s questionable treatment of women following several lawsuits filed against him over the past several weeks.

DONT DELAY KCM – VEDANTA TRANSITION PROCESS, SUBMIT THE SCHEME OF ARRANGEMENT IN COURT, KCM PROVISIONAL LIQUIDATOR CELINE NAIR URGED

A consortium of Civil Society Organisations advocating for the revamping of the mining sector in Zambia, has expressed sadness by reports indicating that contractors and suppliers are complaining that Vedanta is delaying to clear them off payments that Konkola Copper Mines plc (KCM) is owing them.

Consortium leader Samuel Banda says they sympathize with the suppliers and contractors as they know they play a very important role in promoting national economic development, create employment and contribute to to national treasury.

“However, we wish to advise that by law and corporate governance procedure, Vedanta Resources will only clear off payments to the suppliers and contractors after the transition process is finalized this month of December. The process will only progress after the provisional liquidator Celine Nair initiates the legal process by submitting the scheme of arrangement in the Zambian court,” he said.

“As it stands now, we are fully aware that the provisional liquidator Celine Nair has not yet initiated this process by submitting the scheme of arrangement to the Zambian court. This is a setback and a hindrance to the Vedanta KCM transition process that all stakeholders are looking to be finalized.”

Mr Banda, who is also Advocates for National Development and Democracy Executive Director, says key stakeholders, suppliers, contractors and employees at KCM are all waiting for the provisional liquidator Ms Nair to submit the scheme of arrangement and other legal frameworks in the Zambian court so as to finalize the KCM Vedanta transition legal process.

“President Hakainde Hichilema’s ambitious target of 3 million metric tonnes copper production per annum is highly dependent on the successful operations of KCM.

Therefore, we are calling upon the KCM provisional liquidator Celine Nair to stop delaying the transition process and do due diligence and submit the scheme of arrangement to the Zambian court so as to expedite the transition process so that Vedanta Resources can fully take over the operations of KCM and clear off the payments that KCM is owing to suppliers and contractors,” he added.

“Copperbelt economy is in intensive care unit, there are no economic activities due to the non functionality of KCM. The people of Copperbelt are suffering, they are economically disabled, they are painfully deep in poverty. People of Copperbelt are in a hurry to see KCM start operating optimally so that economic development can be restored.”

He stated that it is profoundly imperative that the provisional liquidator Ms Nair do the due diligence and submit the scheme of arrangement in the Zambian court promptly.

“As a country with passion to develop our country economically, we must avoid frustrating processes of development instead we should be hastening processes that leads to economic development.

HICHILEMA: BUTCHERING ZAMBIA’s DEMOCRACY WITH IMPUNITY- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA: BUTCHERING ZAMBIA’s DEMOCRACY WITH IMPUNITY

Police in Kitwe yesterday disrupted a press conference by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Mr Kasonde Mwenda and his entourage.

The police claimed that Mr Mwenda, who was in the company of his party officials and six journalists, when they visited the venue did not notify them about the press conference. They later demanded that the EFF leader and his entourage accompany them to the police station where they warned and advised them to stop any further illegal meetings.

Above are the brief facts on the matter, which were released yesterday.

It is shameful that Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s excessive acts of authoritarianism are getting worse every day and unfortunately, the Zambia police service is at the centre of these desperate manoeuvres by Mr Hichilema to manipulate and abuse citizens without any regard for the Constitution and the rule of law.

Today, Mr Hichilema wants his political competitors to notify the police to hold a press conference and attend a memorial service or church function? What type of paranoia is this? Why is Mr Hichilema such an authoritative, unjust, vengeful, controlling, and dominating person that only prioritises his own interests over the interests of others? Why is Mr Hichilema so brazen about eliminating oversight functions, principles, ethics, and rule of law in his governance? This is total anarchy and insanity!

When Mr Hichilema and the UPND were in opposition, did they ever notify the police about those press conferences they were holding in hotels, the party secretariat, Community House, and so on and so forth? Where did they ever get a permit to address the general public through press conferences? What has changed now? What law are they using to violate people’s freedoms and liberties in this manner?

There is absolutely no doubt that Mr Hichilema has turned into a full-blown despot leader. This corrupt puppet regime bears all symptoms of that, and the recent embarrassing, unjust, and partisan actions taking place in our court systems, parliament, state institutions, and law enforcement such as the police corroborate this standpoint.

It is clear that under Mr Hichilema, the new democracy that is unfolding in Zambia today is one camouflaged in ethnic solidarity, extreme vengeance, deceit and gross levels of grand corruption, and personal enrichment. Mr Hichilema has relegated public interest, patriotism, and the rule of law to the periphery of his governance system and elevated lies, deception, mediocrity, and ethnic or tribal inclinations.

But what he is forgetting is that these extremely risky and reckless manoeuvres are a foundation to social confusion, inequality, despair and economic, and political instability. A very dangerous and worrisome path!

We reiterate our call to the Zambian people not to be under any illusion that Mr Hichilema will ever subject himself to a genuinely democratic and fair contestation of political power in this country because he knows that by doing so, he runs the risk of an electoral defeat and more importantly to him and his league, this would endanger the corrupt networks of personal enrichment that this highly corrupt puppet regime has established since assuming office.

This country needs to break free from Mr Hichilema’s corrupt, failed, restrictive, unpatriotic, puppet, and despotic leadership.

This climate of impunity and arrogance of power must come to an end.

UMODZI KUMAWA IS A GROUP CENTRED ON DEVELOPMENT, NOT FIGHTING GOVERNMENT

Monday, December 11, 2023

We, the members of the Umodzi Kumawa group, strongly refute the recent sensational headline published by News Diggers Newspaper suggesting that Easterners have formed a group to fight the UPND Government due to perceived marginalization. This headline is grossly misleading and fails to accurately represent the purpose and objectives of our organization.

In a recent interview with Mr. Ulande Nkomesha, I clearly stated that the Umodzi Kumawa group is a non-partisan entity that aims to bring Eastern Province together and explore ways to harness the natural resources and potential within the region. Our ultimate goal is to promote development and progress in Eastern Province, while actively engaging with the local communities.

The idea behind Umodzi Kumawa is to unite and bring together the brilliant minds and individuals within Eastern Province to effectively utilize the vast resources at our disposal. We are blessed with national parks, fertile land, and significant mineral deposits. By collectively harnessing these resources, we believe the province can experience substantial development and growth.

It is crucial to emphasize that the Umodzi Kumawa group is not here to fight against any government, including the current New Dawn Government. Our purpose is to work hand in hand with the government of the day, regardless of their political affiliation, to ensure that Eastern Province’s untapped potential is transformed into tangible development. We acknowledge that collaboration and cooperation are necessary to achieve sustainable progress.

Regarding the names listed as interim office bearers, we would like to clarify that they are simply a draft and subject to further discussion and agreement. We are yet to engage the individuals listed to determine their availability and willingness to serve the purpose of harnessing Eastern Province’s immense potential.

The Umodzi Kumawa group stands firm in its commitment to promoting unity, development, and progress in Eastern Province. We firmly disassociate ourselves from any narrative or claims suggesting that our goals involve fighting or opposing the government. Our objective is to collaborate, seek support, and work together with the government for the betterment of Eastern Province and its people.

We urge the public and all stakeholders to disregard any misconceptions or misinterpretations of our organization’s intentions. We remain dedicated to our mission of unlocking Eastern Province’s extraordinary potential and fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

WE’RE HERE HUNGRY…chasing flies from our faces while our
friends are eating soft things – UPND official

By Richard Luo in Sinda(The Mast)

KAPOCHE Constituency UPND chairperson Tedson Zulu says the time for Edgar Lungu to reign as president expired when he was voted out.

Speaking to officials in Mchembwe ward recently, Zulu told his members that former president Lungu is back in active politics but that Zambians are not stupid to vote for him again.

“Kapoche is lagging behind because there are a lot of leadership challenges and this is a reason why you see PF eating meat while us we eat manga. But that doesn’t mean we are not in the right trajectory. But the damage which the previous regime left is huge, which has given our President, Hakainde Hichilema, a big task to correct things for our own benefit,” he said. “You may think maybe we or those on top are enjoying but what you go through it’s all of us. I use my personal money to build the party through meetings when I’m not the MP or councillor but passion for the party makes me do that. Let’s be strong because today we are here hungry just chasing flies from our faces while our friends are eating soft things. But one day if you don’t relent, you and I, we shall benefit. It’s true from the time we formed government we haven’t received soft things but they are coming. Don’t worry.”

Zulu called for intense mobilisation in view of Lungu’s come back.

“I think you have heard that Edgar Lungu is back into politics. All that should allow us to fortify our grounds so much especially here in Kapoche where we have an opposition member of parliament, opposition councillors, making it hard for our party in power to breath. However, don’t worry as Edgar Lungu can’t win because he died politically and he can’t come back,” said Zulu. “Let’s work hard and have our own MP. And like that we shall be proud and confident of receiving good things, and respect will be restored on you because even on such meetings the MP could have sent something for our food.”

Ward information and publicity secretary Smoke Banda urged Zulu to do a good job befitting the party and the public in 2026 by adopting someone who will be at the heart of the people.

He complained that poor adoptions made the party lose in Kapoche in 2021.

“Let’s copy from PF who are very cooperative and considerate. What affects the progress of the party is when others benefit while others not. But when you see PF they share anything they receive and like that they keep their connections tight unlike us. If we copy from PF we can do better. If we want to win in 2026 let’s share what we find,” said Banda. “We are suffering now with Eric [Mwale] but later you the same top officials will receive a foreigner and introduce him to us as a candidate than a person who is in touch with the people and like that we won’t achieve our goal. When that time comes give us a candidate who will be approved by the wards and someone who is liked by the public. And like that I can assure you we shall win. But if we remain divided we will be surprised with what might happen.”

How far will HH go with this PF project?

THE MAST COMMENT FOR SATURDAY DECEMBER 9, 2023

How far will HH go with this PF project?

The unfolding events in the Patriotic Front are nauseating! These State-sponsored wrangles should worry citizens because the new dawn government is setting a precedent that may consume them sooner or later. We recall how Edgar Lungu, who was supported during the 2016 general elections by Rupiah Banda, had the MMD divided and annihilated by one undertaking of endorsing and going into a so-called alliance with a Felix Mutati-led faction after an illegal convention. Mutati ended up becoming finance minister for a short period, shunted at the then ministry of works and supply before he was left in the cold. Next, Edgar chose to elevate Raphael Nakacinda as water development minister.

So this villain role the PF leadership played or assumed for themselves to steal the MMD from Nevers Mumba and put a final nail on its political fortunes, the UPND government today has adopted the Machiavellian manual in their desire to kill PF. So far they have ensured the legislature and police have been coopted to legitimise the scheming. As at now the only hope for civility and retention of our multiparty democracy, in real terms and not on paper only, lies in our Judiciary. We know that this institution too has got mercenaries who offer themselves for destructive missions even before they are approached. We only hope that those few who have some integrity in them can stand up and defend our democracy and the Constitution. It’s possible to have a judge that can forego other gains to defend the Constitution of this country and stop this nonsense from the new dawn. It is disappointing that a man who two years ago amassed over two million votes from Zambians on a platform of promoting the rule of law can today stand head high and encourage Robert Chabinga and company to continue with an illegality. This is a man who had always projected himself as a gentleman. Hakainde Hichilema lied to Zambians that he would practice politics of civility and the rule of law. Today, within two years, Hakainde has surpassed PF’s 10-year record of evil acts, including abuse of state institutions.

And to some gullible Zambians who are supporting this nonsense of destroying PF which the UPND has embarked on, what will the country benefit from this? If Hakainde finishes PF today, then what? Are you going to stand up to his dictatorship or you will start regretting that you never stopped the lot? By then it will be too late. Just as we have said before, the PF wronged so many of us. PF injured many souls while others were clapping about the ‘humble leader’. But for now, PF are a necessary evil to stop Hakainde from imposing a dictatorship on this country. And so far they have been providing the necessary checks and balances. Zambians gave Hakainde the presidency he was crying for for 15 solid years. But within two years, he has failed, and so he is looking for someone to blame for his failure hence this journey of breaking up every institution that can hold our democracy so that no one speaks against him. By next year, we will not be surprised if he declares a state of emergency. It looks like this is the script they have written and they are following it keenly. They want to agitate Zambians so that when people take to the streets through peaceful demonstrations, then Hakainde will have a reason to declare a state of emergency and lock up all critical voices.

We are aware of how this new dawn leadership is stubborn and determined to wipe the PF out of the political map. And they’ll not back out. In their infantile politics, the end justifies the means. They have no sense of shame, can’t seem to have a proper end game in their malfeasance. But there’s no need to stick to a strategy which was covert when you have been caught pants down!

The water that “lets the fish swim is the same water that boils him”. This copy and paste schemes from the past administrations which the new dawn has employed in their hopes of causing confusion in the PF will not end well.

Patrick Rothfuss warns that, “Power is okay, and stupidity is usually harmless. Power and stupidity together are dangerous.”

The UPND’s tricks are too transparent. It could be that they are too eager not only to steal the PF but also to add to their numbers in parliament for reasons best known to themselves. You don’t need to be a politician to understand what is going on. But we hope when all is done and dusted, PF won’t emerge fully laundered and UPND soiled to the bone. Stop these schemes! Concentrate on the economy and other reform programmes that you promised citizens. These dirty games won’t lower the cost of living, reduce fuel and food prices nor restructure Zambia’s burdensome foreign debt. They’re not adding value to your government but massively eating away at your governance record. Learn from the PF itself. They didn’t survive the sponsoring of MMD wrangles. This is how Felix ended up forming MDC which he’s conveniently appended to the UPND and has been rewarded with a ministerial job. As for Raphael he is back where it all started, in court fighting a state-sponsored intraparty wrangle albeit from a weaker position; in opposition that is. Karma!

We urge the UPND to reflect on Mahatma Gandhi’s notice, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The PF messed up the MMD; they got no dividend out of it. Why is the new dawn insolently poking its nose into PF’s affairs? And what makes the UPND think that they will come out of this fight unbruised? Let’s watch the space. How far will HH go
