Masebo bemoans theft of medicines in health facilities

0

Minister of Health Silvia Masebo has bemoaned the theft of medicines and medical supplies in public health facilities which contributes to drug shortages in public health facilities.

Ms Masebo says pilfering of medicines is a matter of concern and urgency as it undermines the efforts of the government to provide quality healthcare services to all.

Speaking when she opened a consultative meeting on the theft of medicines and medical supplies in Public Health Institutions, Ms Masebo stressed that thefts of medicines are not only illegal but also unethical, as it directly affects the lives of the most vulnerable members of society.

Ms Masebo said thefts of medicines and medical supplies from public health facilities, deprives patients of the much needed care and treatment of their ailments which may lead to disability or death.

She said the government has reaffirmed commitment to the provision of equitable access to quality, safe and effective medicines, vaccines and medical supplies for people, which are affordable in line with the National Drug Policy.

She said to achieve this, the Ministry of Health, with other cooperating partners, has for a long time invested substantial amounts of money in the public sector pharmaceutical supply chain.

She added that this is evidenced from the increased budgetary allocation for the health sector from 1.2 billion to 4.6 billion for the procurement of medicines and medical supplies in the 2023 National Budget.

” With this increased financing the availability of medicines and medical supplies is expected to improve in all health facilities as we have all witnessed the arrival and distribution of 7000 health centre drug kits to all Districts and health centres across the country.” She said

The Minister said all efforts are being done in order for the country to be commodity secure but it is sad to see various factors that are creating gaps in the availability and access to essential medicines and medical supplies.

She reiterated that shortages of medical supplies from public health facilities also frustrates the efforts of dedicated healthcare workers who work tirelessly to ensure quality services are provided for the people.

She said that the Ministry of Health through a multi sectoral approach has arrested 70 people with 35 convictions of which 26 are health workers.

The Ministry has further taken a step to write to the Health Professions Council of Zambia to have those convicted be deregistered.

Copperbelt Province Minister describes Ndola City Council US$200 million land scandal disastrous

0

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo has described Ndola City Council’s (NCC) loss of 200 million dollars in a land scandal as a disaster.

Mr. Matambo told journalists at a press briefing in Ndola that the NCC report of land wrangles in Dola hill area is a big scandal as there was no transparency in the joint venture between the council and Henan Guoji Limited Chinese Company.

He said according to the report the Chinese company approached NCC and agreed on a joint venture, where Ndola city council was supposed to provide land and Henan Guoji was to provide capital of 200 million dollars.

He added that as per agreement that was signed on 31 May, 2013 the joint venture resulted in a group of companies where Ndola City Council was supposed to have shares, and Henan Guoji Limited company was supposed to have 73 percent.

“Henan Guoji Company was also supposed to build houses, a shopping mall, a school, and a hospital ,” said Mr Matambo.

He said Ndola city council provided 160 hectares of land to Henan Guoji Limited Company, a few weeks later the land was reduced to 137 hectares because the minister of land wanted to sort the issue with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).

He said the Henan Guoji Limited company was supposed to be transparent by depositing the 200 million United States dollars, but the company did not do so.

Matambo further said Henan Guoji Company limited was given a period of 30 days to start construction, but the period expired without resuming the works.

“Later after Henan Guoji failed to develop the area another agreement was signed to give back 77 hectors of land to Ndola city council and remained with 60 hectares without any payment.

Henan Guoji Company later gave back 20 hectares to Ndola city council but no amount was paid to the council.

“Part of the land was paid to a law firm as a part of payment for the service it rendered. And that form of agreement is not in the report”, said Mr. Matambo .

He also disclosed that 2.5 hectares was given to one of the senior employees,” he said.

Mr Matambo added that his office will follow the matter until it ends adding that there must be transparency in the way land is allocated.

He appealed to Ndola residents who bought land from the company to come forward to the Copper belt Permanent Secretary to give information about what transpired, because no amount was paid to the council.

David Mwanza from Ndola resident Association Chairperson also appealed to the Copperbelt Minister to allow them to write a report about the information in their report.

“We feel the Council has left out some information in their report” said Mr. Mwanza.

Another Ndola Resident Association Secretary William Sitali called on Mr Matambo to stop the constructions that are underway until the issue is resolved.

He said if the Government does not do so they will take the law in their hands.

A week ago Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo gave a directive to the Ndola City Council to come up with a report on what had transpired concerning the said land in Dola hill.

The Minister, Ndola City Council and provincial land officer had last week visited the said land to assess what was happening on the ground.

BALLY’S ISREAL TRIP SHOULD BE COMMENDED – MOFU

…as he calls upon Zambians to ignore the Opposition…

United Party for National Development (UPND) Member Gregory Mofu has said that Republican President Dr. Hakainde Hichilema’s trip to the State of ISREAL should be commended.

Republican President Hakainde Hichilema has just returned from a 3-day state visit to Israel, following an invitation from Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

President Hichilema’s visit to Israel was focused on enhancing diplomatic ties and exploring opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

The State Visit symbolized a commitment to strengthen friendship and cooperation between Zambia and Israel.

Commenting on the trip, Mr. Mofu, who is former MMD Deputy National Secretary said Zambia has alot to learn from ISREAL.

“The Republic of ISREAL is a World Power. It is the 4th most successful economy among the developed Countries for 2022.

It has the highest growth rate in the western world along with Ireland. It has one of the lowest external debts in the developed world and We can learn on how to reduce huge debt.

Despite limited natural resources, intensive development of the agricultural and industrial sectors over the past decades has made ISREAL largely self sufficient in food production and We who have abundant natural resources can learn alot from them. So in short, Zambia has alot to learn from Isreal”, Mr. Mofu said.

Mr. Mofu then said that Zambians should commend Republican President Dr. Hichilema for his State Visit to ISREAL.

“Lastly but not the least, We have heard some Opposition Leaders attacking the President for visiting ISREAL. Zambians should ignore their utterances because they are just exposing their bitterness and illiteracy.

ISREAL is a developed Country and an invitation to a developing Country like Ourselves from them can not be declined.

Secondly, We are a Christian Nation and ISREAL is the birth place and capital of Christianity, how surely can we refuse an invitation to visit the Holy Land.

President Hichilema should be commended by all Zambians for his State Visit to the State of ISREAL”, Mr. Mofu said.

Israeli firm plans to invest $ 100 million in Zambia’s solar and wind energy

An Israeli based investor, Gigawatt Global, is set to pump in 100 million United State dollars in a hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power project in Zambia.

Gigawatt Global President and Chief Executive Officer, Josef Abramowitz, disclosed in an interview on the sidelines of the Israeli/Zambia Business Forum 2023 held in Jerusalem yesterday under the theme “Agro-business Opportunities to Guarantee Food Security “.

Mr. Abramowitz said his company is set to inject 100 million United States dollars in developing a 71 Megawatts hybrid solar PV and wind power project Chibombo district in Central Province of Zambia.

Mr. Abramowitz said his company is a multinational renewable energy platform that develops, finances, builds and operates utility-scale PV solar projects in emerging markets.

He said based on their experience as pioneers of the solar industry in Israel, the company’s founders built the first grid-connected solar project in East Africa, an 8.5 MW solar PV plant in Rwanda.

Mr Abramowitz said Gigawatt Global reached financial close on their 8.67MW solar PV project in Burundi in January 2020, with construction now under way.

Mr. Abramowitz said the Chibombo Gigawatt hybrid solar PV and wind project was started in 2018 but the project could not take off due to challenges the energy industry has faced through years.

“Plans to start this project in Chibombo started in 2018 but we could not proceed much with project implementation due to a number of road blocks and other challenges faced and now all is well as things are moving smoothly and ready to roll out our project,” said Mr. Abramowitz.

He said he is happy that the business environment in Zambia has tremendously changed following the change of Government.

Mr. Abramowitz said his company has since obtained the Investment License with Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the project has already signed an Implementation Agreement with the Ministry of Energy and a number of Grid Impact studies in Topographical have already started.

He added that the company will be moving on site to start full project implementation.

He has since thanked the Government for making it easy for foreign investors to invest in Zambia.

Mr. Abramowitz said his company is ready to work with the Zambian people in the economic development of the country.

“Our company is ready to move in and commence the implementation of the project. We have the money and all we are waiting for is to complete all the formalities,” he said.

On Monday this week, President Hakainde Hichilema called on Israeli investors to consider investing in Zambia.

Mr. Hichilema said Zambia has a conducive business environment to support and promote foreign investment.

President Hichilema said this during a State banquet hosted in his honour by the Israeli President, Isaac Herzog, at the presidential residence in Jerusalem.

President Hichilema, who has since returned home, was in Israel at the invitation of Isaac Herzog, President of the State of Israel.

While in Israel, President Hichilema attended a meeting on creating an ecosystem for innovation – the Israeli Model at the King David Hotel, Ambassadors Garden Hall.

The President engaged in crucial talks with President Herzog and Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel, as well as other high-ranking officials.

The discussions delved into critical bilateral and regional issues, prioritising peace, security, and peace-building initiatives.

Before his departure yesterday, President Hichilema officially opened the Zambia–Israel Business Forum under the theme “Agro-Business Opportunities to Guarantee Food Security.

Fifa investigating fresh claims Copper Queens coach Bruce Mwape, rubbed player’s chest at World Cup

By theguardian

Zambia’s coach, Bruce Mwape, has been accused of rubbing his hands over the chest of one of his players two days before his country’s historic victory over Costa Rica in their final match at the Women’s World Cup.

Fifa has confirmed it received an official complaint about the alleged incident after Zambia claimed their first win at a World Cup on Monday in New Zealand. Before the tournament the Guardian revealed Mwape was the subject of an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

According to a source close to the squad, several players saw Mwape rubbing his hands over the chest of one of their teammates last Friday after training. “It’s not appropriate for a coach to be touching a player’s breasts,” said the source.

Witnesses are understood to have discussed reporting the incident immediately but decided to wait until after their campaign had been completed over fears that they would not be selected for unsettling the team. Zambia had already been eliminated after 5-0 defeats by Spain and Japan but finished third in the group after the 3-1 victory over Costa Rica.

It is understood the allegation against Mwape was reported to a Fifa delegate who has been with the squad throughout their stay in New Zealand. The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president, Andrew Kamanga, is believed to be aware of the incident.

The FAZ and Mwape did not respond to the Guardian’s questions. A Fifa spokesperson said: “Fifa takes any allegation of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process in place for anyone in football who wants to report an incident. We can confirm that a complaint has been received in relation to the Zambian women’s national team and this is currently being investigated. We cannot provide further details regarding an ongoing investigation for obvious confidentiality reasons.

“Anyone who wishes to report allegations or information related to abuse in football can do so via Fifa’s confidential reporting platform, with all information that is submitted to Fifa handled in the strictest of confidence. In addition, Fifa offers support and assistance to ensure the safety of those who report a safeguarding issue, including witnesses who come forward and give testimony in Fifa judicial cases. Where guilt is established, Fifa takes the strongest possible sanctions, including removing people from the game for life. Our track record demonstrates this.”

Mwape was appointed by Zambia in May 2018 and helped them qualify for the World Cup for the first time. The FAZ said in September 2022 that it had referred an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse in the women’s game to Fifa. Mwape and the under-17s coach Kaluba Kangwa are understood to have been among the FAZ employees who were investigated. Kangwa has left his post despite no official announcement from the FAZ.

“If he [Mwape] wants to sleep with someone, you have to say yes,” one player who did not want to be named told the Guardian last month. “It’s normal that the coach sleeps with the players in our team.”

A Fifa spokesperson told the Guardian last year that it was aware of the accusations against Mwape and has been in touch with the FAZ over the case but could not comment on ongoing investigations.

Sadio Mane becomes the highest-paid Black African player following his move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr

0

Senegalese player Sadio Mané has joined Saudi Arabia club side Al Nassr following a season at FC Bayern. The 31-year-old forward signed a four-year contract, Nassr posted on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to Sky News, the former Liverpool forward stands to earn around $170 million in total if he sees out the deal. However, Reuters reports that Saudi paid $43.85 million for the 31-year-old who had two years left on his contract with Bayern.

TalkSports reports that he will earn around $823,000 weekly and $43 million yearly tax-free at Al Nassr. The money involved in his contract makes him the highest-paid Sub-Saharan African player and one of the world’s highest-paid players.

Algerian player Riyad Mahrez, who recently moved to Al-Hali in the Saudi Pro-League, is the highest-paid African footballer. He takes home around £865,000 ($1000, 000) a week. Mane thus becomes the highest-paid black African footballer in the world.

Algerian player Riyad Mahrez, who recently moved to Al-Hali in the Saudi Pro-League, is the highest-paid African footballer. He takes home around £865,000 ($1000, 000) a week. Mane thus becomes the highest-paid black African footballer in the world.

Mane joined Bayern after a glittering outing at Liverpool, where he netted 120 goals in 269 games. He also won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Club World Cup during his six-year period at Liverpool.

Following the expiration of his contract at the Merseyside Club, he moved to Bayern but failed to impress the German champions, scoring only 12 goals. His stay became compounded when he fell out with teammate Leroy Sane and hit the German winger. He was suspended and fined for the incident.

“We want to thank Sadio Mane for the past season,” Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen told the club website. “It certainly hasn’t been an easy year for him, suffering an injury just before the World Cup and missing out on participation with Senegal, whom he had earlier led to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations triumph and World Cup qualification.

“Due to the long downtime, he wasn’t able to contribute as much to FC Bayern as we and he himself had hoped. That’s why we decided together that he should start a new chapter in his career and make a fresh start at another club.”

The twice African Footballer of the Year will now play with Christiano Ronaldo, who joined the Suadi club last year. Aside from Ronaldo and Mane, they also have midfielders like Marcelo Brozovic and Seko Fofana from Inter Milan and Lens respectively. They also signed Alex Telles from Manchester United.

CCC supporter killed following attack by Zanu PF activists

WITH 19 days left till the general elections, political violence has once again reared its ugly head casting a dark shadow over the Glen View community.

Following the brutal murder of one Tinashe Chitsunge, a member of the opposition Citizens Coalition, Thursday police arrested two suspects saying efforts are underway to apprehend more suspects.

When this publication arrived at the crime scene around 6 pm, Chitsunge’s body was still lying in the street.

Stones were strewn all over the place entailing the battle that took the opposition supporter’s life.

The crime scene tape demarcated the area where the body lay, and scores of people observed from a distance as the authorities discharged their procedural protocols before removing the body.

They (the police) then proceeded to capture statements from CCC members and other witnesses who were with the victim moments before he died.

According to eyewitnesses and party members, CCC was scheduled to have a rally that had been authorized by the police at Tanaka Ground.

Tanaka is a newly settled area, with most of the people having invaded virgin land after a go-ahead from the ruling party.

As part of drumming up support for Churu candidate, Traswel Chikomo who is contesting against Zanu PF’s Ephraim Fundukwa, CCC members from Glen View South offered to distribute flyers notifying the public of their intention to hold a political meeting.

Churu and Glen View South constituencies are merely separated by roads.

According to eyewitnesses, after getting wind of the planned CCC rally, Zanu PF mobilized its supporters and gathered at the grounds claiming they were hosting a soccer tournament as early as 6 am.

CCC engaged police who told Zanu PF supporters to vacate the grounds, some officers unwittingly revealed.

“But in the morning they were told that the ground had been booked. We even laughed and said what kind of a soccer tournament that starts at 6 am,” said one officer addressing his colleague.

He added that Zanu PF supporters had bulldozed the police decision saying if the CCC rally was starting at 10 am, their tournament would be over by then.

Chitsunge was one of the people taping campaign posters on trees and poles, as evidenced by a roll of sellotape around his hand on pictures making the rounds on social media.

While distributing their fliers, Chitsunge and others were confronted by a mob of Zanu PF supporters who defaced their posters, before they started pelting them with stones.

As some members took shelter at different residential dwellings, tragedy struck.

Some were left nursing serious injuries with one having sustained a broken leg while others fled and sought medical attention back home.

Chitsunge is survived by his wife and two minor children.

Some CCC members, who commented on the basis of anonymity said Zanu PF aspiring candidate for Churu ferried his party supporters to Tanaka Ground.

Prior to Zanu PF gathering at Tanaka grounds, there had been reports of some Churu ruling party groups circulating messages threatening to unleash an orgy of violence.

CCC aspiring MP for Glen View South, Grandmore Hakata, said the party was distributing campaign fliers in Glen View 7, near Tanaka when some Zanu PF supporters started pelting them with stones.

CCC spokesperson said the murder of Chitsunge dents the country’s democracy.

“It’s not a crime to wear yellow or be a member of CCC. He was murdered in cold blood today by the usual merchants of violence. No person should be killed for their politics. This marks a dark stain on our democracy,” Mahere said.

Zanu PF cries foul, CCC files police report as campaign posters are defaced

PARLIAMENTARY candidates for the Masvingo Urban constituency are crying foul over the illegal defacing of their campaign posters ahead of the crucial August 23 plebiscite.

Three candidates; current Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke who is contesting as an independent, his deputy Wellington Mahwende of Zanu PF, and Martin Mureri of Citizens Coalition for Change are eyeing the seat.

In what seems to be dirty tricks ahead of the election, campaign posters are being defaced as a sign of disapproval by suspected rogue supporters.

Independent candidate, Maboke accuses the ruling Zanu PF and CCC supporters of defacing his posters saying they are feeling the heat.

“Zanu PF and CCC supporters are defacing my posters. They are afraid because they know I am the people’s choice. These dirty tricks won’t change people’s hearts, I am replacing those defaced posters and I will not tire, people want me because they are the ones that sent me to represent them,” said Maboke.

CCC candidate, Mureri is also crying foul and says he has filed a police report.

“Most of my posters are being pulled down by my rivals’ supporters. We have made a police report regarding that matter,” he said.

However, Mureri and his campaign manager, Thomas Mbetu said they are yet to get the case number from the Investigating Officer.

The case was allegedly reported at CID Law and Order Masvingo.

Masvingo police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa could not be drawn to comment as he was out of office.

Zanu PF candidate, Wellington Mawende was not reachable for comment as his mobile went unanswered until the time of publishing.

However, Zanu PF Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Pepukai Chiwewe demanded evidence of where their supporters were participating in this illegal activity and said they were real victims.

“We are busy campaigning, if there is any evidence linking our supporters to the defacing of other candidates’ posters let it be brought forward. Our posters are the ones being defaced and in some instances, our supporters are assaulted by CCC members,” said Chiwewe.

Zanu PF is currently doing roadshows daily in the Masvingo Central Business District (CBD) and residential suburbs while CCC and Independent candidates have been denied an opportunity to hold car rallies.

Maboke and Mureri are crying foul saying defacing their posters and banning car rallies brings an unfair political field ahead of the general elections.

Mureri was arrested together with the CCC candidate for Masvingo West Pedzisai Gasva a few weeks for allegedly convening an unsanctioned campaign in Mucheke’s high-density suburbs.

CCC Masvingo leadership has demanded to see applications by the ruling party and police clearances relating to the car rallies but claims the police are being evasive to provide evidence.

Maboke’s intended car rallies have also failed to be cleared by the police who are saying the applications don’t meet set requirements to be cleared.

According to Section 152 (1) of the Electoral Act Chapter 2:13, defacing or pulling down other aspirants’ campaign posters is an offense.

African Rights Commission flags violence against Zim women ahead of 2023 harmonised elections

THE African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) has raised concern over reports of alleged rising political tension and cases resulting in physical and cyber-attacks targeting voters and political activists, particularly women.

ACHPR, through its Country Rapporteur for Zimbabwe, and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, Honourable Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, is monitoring human rights issues related to electoral processes in the country, in accordance with its dual mandate of protecting and promoting human and peoples’ rights.

In a statement issued Tuesday titled “Women’s Political Participation in the Run-Up to August 2023 Presidential Elections in Zimbabwe”, the continental body said although there have been strides to promote gender balance in politics, the prevailing situation prevented full participation of female politicians.

“The ACHPR commends the ongoing preparations aimed at ensuring that the national elections scheduled for 23rd August 2023 are conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and credible.

“Additionally, the ACHPR acknowledges the enthusiasm demonstrated by the electorate, especially women, in exercising their right to participate in the electoral process and thus contributing their voice in determining the future of their country and upholding a truly democratic society.

“The ACHPR, however, expresses deep concern over reports of alleged escalating political tension and incidents that have resulted in offline and online attacks targeting voters and members of political parties, with a particular focus on women,” the commission noted.

The ACHPR said it noted allegations of persistent online violence targeting women, often stem from offline violence, and in many instances, escalate to physical harm.

“To safeguard the women who bravely express their political views despite facing continuous challenges both online and offline, the Government of Zimbabwe should endeavour to strengthen its efforts in combating hate speech and harmful content, that fuel animosity and incite violence against women in politics.

“ACHPR emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the online space to ensure women’s active participation in the political sphere without facing attacks. By doing so, we encourage women to continue being an integral part of the digital world.

“ACHPR also received reports about women allegedly experiencing gender-based violence and discrimination due to their own affiliation or that of their relatives with opposition political parties.

“This distressing situation not only jeopardizes the lives and well-being of these women but also poses a significant threat to the credibility of the election and the democratic values within the country.”

Of the 12 presidential candidates, there is only one female while there has been a significant reduction of women parliamentary and councillor aspirants from 14% to 10% in 2018 and 2023, respectively.

The commission emphasised that such recent events and the growing concerns regarding women’s treatment during the ongoing election process may undermine unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality and safeguarding women’s rights in political spheres.

The ACHPR recognizes that the alleged acts committed against members of political parties, especially women, represent a significant violation of the rights and freedoms protected by various regional human rights instruments adopted under the auspices of the African Union (AU).

The ACHPR also appealed to supporters of political parties, urging them to abstain from using or spreading inciteful expressions that could lead to attacks or discrimination against individuals or groups, based solely on their affiliation with a particular political party, thus creating a respectful and tolerant political climate.

Government has been urged to uphold principles enshrined in Article 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter) that guarantees right of every citizen to participate freely in the government of his country, either directly or through freely chosen representatives in accordance with provisions of the law.

Among other instruments, Zimbabwe should also observe the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol) in Article 19 obliges States Parties to “take specific positive action to promote participative governance and the equal participation of women in the political life of their countries through affirmative action, enabling national legislation and other measures to ensure the equal participation and representation of women in electoral process.”

“The ACHPR seizes this opportunity to remind the Government of Zimbabwe to uphold its obligations under the aforementioned instruments, recognizing and guaranteeing the rights of all citizens to freely participate in the political sphere of the country.

“Of particular significance is enabling the full and fearless participation of women in the electoral process by ensuring a safe online and offline environment, fostering a truly inclusive and democratic society.”

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) was rallied to ensure strict compliance with the laws and standards governing free political participation of citizens, in order to ensure free, fair and democratic electoral environment.

ACHPR also urged decisive legal measures and collaborative efforts with relevant stakeholders to address the long-standing historical discrimination, which has hindered women’s political participation and create a safe and supportive electoral space where women thrive without fear of digital or physical attacks in the lead-up to the 2023 polls.

“By doing so, Zimbabwe will foster a more inclusive and representative democracy that empowers women and ensures their voices are heard and valued in the political process.”

Opposition member stoned to death by Zanu PF supporter

A Citizens Coalition for Change ( CCC) supporter was killed on Thursday after rampaging Zanu PF supporters thwarted a planned rally in Harare’s Glen Norah suburb.

Police have developed a working theory that Tinashe Chitsunge, fleeing a raging Zanu PF mob, was trying to jump onto the back of a slow-moving DAF truck when he was hit on the head with a stone and fell down, based on witness accounts. His head was partially crushed by the rear tyres of the truck which was carrying other CCC supporters and was being pursued by the mob.

The CCC has demanded swift police action.

The incident, coming less than three weeks before Zimbabweans vote in general elections, will cast a pall on the plebiscite already undermined by opposition complaints that the ruling Zanu PF party is using state institutions to stop them from mobilising.

In a statement, police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were investigating “an incident of public violence” in the Riverside area of Glen Norah, adding: “One person is confirmed dead as a result of the clashes. The scene is being attended by all relevant police sections.”

In a later update, Nyathi said police had arrested two suspects “on the violence which occurred in Riverside area… as efforts to account for the remaining suspects continue.” He made no mention of murder, amid revelations that the police plan to investigate the incident as a road traffic accident, with those arrested likely to face public violence charges.

Locals told ZimLive that the two arrested individuals were identified as the “ringleaders,” including one man named only as Madziva.

“Police also came under attack and they have good information on the instigators of this tragedy,” one resident said.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said: “The convenor of the rally reports that CCC booked the venue a week ago. The rally was approved by police. From 6AM today (Thursday), Zanu PF thugs arrived at the venue and started playing music. They barricaded the entrance and refused to leave. They attacked our members. Several were injured.”

A woman who declined to be named told how just after 12PM they arrived at the venue at Tanaka Grounds to find Zanu PF supporters playing football with music blaring from commercial-size speakers.

“We decided to hold back a bit and minutes later Zanu PF supporters emerged from two directions and started throwing stones at us. My neighbour (a woman) was hit on the head. As we were running, I heard that one of our members had been hit on the head with a stone leading to his death,” the woman said.

Lawyers said Chitsunge’s death should still be investigated as murder, even if his death came as a result of the accidental contact with the truck.

“The homicide division of the Criminal Investigations Department has the best cops in the land. They’re aware of dolus eventualis. If death resulted from the deceased fleeing from an attack by a political mob, that mob would be criminally liable without a doubt,” said Thabani Mpofu, an advocate in Zimbabwe’s superior courts.

Zimbabweans vote in general elections on August 23, with CCC leader Nelson Chamisa bidding to end Zanu PF’s 43-year-old rule.

In a weird twist of events, a used coffin was discovered in one of Harare’s oldest high schools, raising eyebrows and leaving everyone puzzled.

The mysterious finding was stumbled upon by district education officials at Girls High School, who had to resort to breaking down the door to gain entry after being denied access by the school authorities.

Questions Abound As Used Coffin Is Discovered at Girls High School

Now, investigations are in full swing to uncover the origins of the coffin and the identity of those responsible for placing it there.

Curiously, no information has been reported about what happened to the body that was inside the coffin, and its disposal remains unresolved.

Several intriguing questions arise from this strange situation:

What became of the body that was once in the coffin?
Who closed the room and when did they do it?
What were the reasons behind former staff members sneaking into the premises at night?
In response to inquiries, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson, Taungana Ndoro, confirmed the incident and assured that investigations are actively underway.

“Investigations are underway since no one is aware of when the wooden coffin was placed in that room and the person who placed it. There was no formal report made and the wooden coffin is yet to be disposed of,” said Ndoro.

Former Staff Member Visited Room That Was Always Locked

A source who spoke to H-Metro revealed that the room had always been locked long before the current headmistress arrived at the school. When the coffin was discovered, it came to light that one of the school’s former staff members had visited the room.

“The room was always closed for years long before the current headmistress came. Suspicion arose when the coffin was discovered with reports that one of the former staff members visited the room during the night. Her mission could not be ascertained and people were quick to point a finger. Questions that remain unanswered are, when was the coffin placed, where was the body taken to, who placed it and why that room was a no-go area for years? Pane umwe akanzwikwa achidaidzira kuti matifumura matifumura saka nyaya iyi hainakuendeswa kumapurisa.” the source told the tabloid.

When H-Metro visited the school, the headmistress stated that she was not present when the coffin was found.

China to limit minors to no more than two hours a day on their phones/internet

0

The People’s Republic of China is proposing new measures to curb the amount of time that kids and teens can spend on their phones, as the world power takes aim at internet addiction and tries to cultivate “good morality” and “socialist values” among minors.

A proposal released by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the country’s internet regulator, on Wednesday, August 2 would require all mobile devices, apps and app stores to have a built in “minor mode” that would restrict daily screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, depending on the age group.

The restrictions, if legalized, would mark an expansion of existing measures by Beijing to limit screen time among kids and reduce their exposure to “undesirable information.”

Under the draft rules, which are open for public discussion until September 2, children and teens using devices on minor mode would automatically see online applications close when respective time limits are up. They would also be offered “age-based content.”

No one under 18 would be able to access their screens between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. while using the mode.

The proposed law says Children under eight would be able to use their phones for only 40 minutes a day, while those between eight and 16 would get an hour of screen time. Teenagers over 16 and under 18 would be allowed two hours.

All age groups would receive a reminder to rest after using their device for more than 30 minutes.

Mobile internet service providers should also actively create content that “disseminates core socialist values” and “forges a sense of community of the Chinese nation,” the draft says.

Parents would be able to override time restrictions, and certain educational and emergency services would not be subject to the time limits.

China has one of the world’s largest internet user bases, with roughly 1.07 billion people in the country of 1.4 billion having access to the web, according to the China Internet Network Information Center. About one in five users were 19 years or under, as of December.

Meghan Markle manipulated Prince Harry which led to feud with David and Victoria Beckham” – Ex-friend says

0

A former friend of Meghan Markle has come out to throw more accusations towards the former UK Royal.

Lizzie Cundy, a British TV presenter who was once pals with the Duchess of Sussex made the claim in an interview with The Mirror on Wednesday, August 2 amid reports that Markle and Prince Harry have now fallen out with David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham.

Cundy alleges that Markle may have “manipulated” Harry into believing the Beckhams were leaking stories about them to the press, declaring: “At this rate, they’ll have no friends at all!”.

Cundy claims that the “Suits” star was so starstruck when she met former Spice Girls star, Victoria Beckham in 2013 that she “squealed” when she set eyes on her.

“Meghan Markle manipulated Prince Harry which led to feud with David and Victoria Beckham” – Ex-friend says
Cundy

Cundy, 55, and Markle, 41, were both guests at the Global Gift Gala in 2013 when they spotted Victoria, 49, in attendance.

“I’ve never seen anyone squeal quite like it,” Cundy claimed of Markle’s audible reaction to seeing the Spice Girl in the flesh. “Meghan was so thrilled with excitement to see Victoria Beckham. She went ‘Oh my God, that’s Victoria Beckham!’”

“It was crazy,” Cundy continued, recalling the red carpet reaction. “I thought ‘You’ve got to calm down and be cool.’”

She added that Markle and Victoria spoke at the event, and that the “Suits” star lit up “like a Christmas tree” during the exchange.

Markle eventually went on to forge a friendship with Victoria and her husband, David, after she started dating Prince Harry in 2016. Markle and Harry became close pals with the Beckhams, who were even invited to their 2018 wedding.

Cundy also claims she was “ghosted” by Markle after Harry came onto the scene.

Now, there are reports that the two power couples have fallen out, with Markle and Harry reportedly accusing the Beckhams of leaking stories to the press.

A source told The Daily Mail that David Beckham is “absolutely bloody furious” after accusations supposedly flew during a tense phone call between the couples.

“Any making up now is so unlikely,” the insider claimed.

“I was the one who knew Meghan before Harry and I saw the reaction to Victoria. She was a proper big fan, she let that show – Victoria doesn’t need to leak stories, she doesn’t need to do that,” Cundy stated.

“I think Victoria and David have slowly tiptoed away like the other friends, many friends who went to the wedding have tiptoed away from Meghan,” Cundy claimed. “These are real big family people, there’s no way Victoria would’ve leaked stories.”

Africa’s latest coup is a headache for the West and an opportunity for Russia

Days after the democratically elected president of Niger was deposed in a military coup, thousands of supporters of the takeover thronged the French embassy in the nation’s capital to deliver an unmistakable message to their former colonial power and its Western allies.

As President Mohamed Bazoum was being held captive by his soldiers at the presidential palace in Niamey, tense scenes played out down the road where pro-coup Nigeriens, some waving Russian flags, chanted “long live Putin” and “down with France” as a plaque at the embassy was torn down.

The images reverberated through the halls of power at the Elysee Palace in Paris, thousands of miles away. French President Emmanuel Macron threatened retaliation against any attacks on French nationals and condemned the coup as “completely illegitimate and profoundly dangerous for the Nigeriens, Niger and the whole region.”

The United States and other Western nations also condemned the coup, and a bloc of Western African countries threatened to intervene militarily if Bazoum was not reinstated.

US President Joe Biden called for the immediate release of Bazoum in a written statement commemorating Niger’s Independence Day, saying Washington “stands with the people of Niger” as the country faces a “grave challenge to its democracy.”

The toppling of Bazoum was just the latest in a spate of recent coups stretching from one side of Africa to the other. Five countries in western and central Africa have been seized by military juntas in the past three years, five of them former French colonies.

The coups have unfolded within the context of a wider struggle between the West and Russia for influence in Africa, where experts say a rising tide of anger in former French colonies has left the door open for the Kremlin. While there is no sign that Russia helped instigate Niger’s rebellion, Moscow has sought to take advantage of anti-Western sentiment around the region in recent years.

US officials warn that the Russian mercenary group Wagner, which helps prop up several military juntas in the region, could seek to exploit the crisis in Niger. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has celebrated the putsch and offered to help the country’s new leaders.

As Western countries raced to evacuate their people from Niamey on Wednesday, one of Niger’s coup leaders flew with a delegation to neighboring Mali, where hundreds of Wagner contractors are stationed, to seek support from that nation’s military ruler.

An important Western ally
The coup in Niger has deprived Western nations, particularly France and the United States, of a key ally in a troubled region.

The largest country in West Africa, Niger had been touted as a democratic success story on the continent and Bazoum was seen as a crucial partner in the fight against Islamist jihadists in the region.

About 1,100 US troops are stationed in the country, including at a drone base that aids the Nigerien military in countering insurgents affiliated to ISIS and al Qaeda.

The French military also maintains two permanent bases in the Sahel region, one of which is in Niamey. This was the main base for its flagship Operation Barkhane, a broader French anti-terror initiative targeting militants across the Sahel, including in Burkina Faso.

The number of violent events involving militant Islamist groups in the Sahel has doubled since 2021, according to a report published Monday by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, a Pentagon think-tank.

Niger is also a leading supply of uranium to the European Union and produces around 5% of the world’s supply of the mineral, according to the World Nuclear Association.

Anti-French backlash
Despite its wealth of resources, Niger remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Many Nigeriens, especially in the younger generation, see France as responsible for prevailing poverty levels in their country.

“We came out to tell this little Macron from France that Niger belongs to us. It is up to us to do what we want with Niger, we deal with who we want,” Maman Sani, a pro-coup protester, told CNN.

This resentment has spilled over into a burgeoning anti-French sentiment that is rising across the former French colonies in West and Central Africa, said Oluwole Ojewale, an analyst with the Institute for Security Studies.

“There’s a sense that even though France granted independence … they are still tied to the umbilical cord of France. There’s a subtle thinking that nothing takes place in Francophone countries without the tacit approval of France,” Ojewale told CNN.

For decades, Paris has maintained a prominent presence in many African nations stemming from its colonial history in the continent, a relationship known as “Françafrique.”

Françafrique has often been criticized for perpetuating neo-colonial practices. For example, few things have sparked more controversy than the Central African franc or CFA, a currency which is used by 14 nations in West and Central Africa including Niger.

Countries using CFA Francs are required to store 50% of their currency reserves with the Banque de France, and the currency is pegged to the euro. While Paris asserts that the system promotes economic stability, others say it allows France to exert control over the economy of the countries using it.

A battle for influence
The wave of anger against the French in its former colonies in Africa presents an opportunity for Russia as it seeks to extend its influence across the continent, said Remi Adekoya, an associate lecturer in politics at the UK’s York University.

“When people were talking about potential rivals of Western influence in Africa, it was always China,” Adekoya said. “Now in the past couple years, essentially since the war with Ukraine, Russia has intensified its efforts, and all of a sudden Russia is now back almost as a geopolitical player on the African continent, and Western intelligence services are worried.”

Wagner is central to the way in which Russia has maintained and grown its clout in Africa.

Several CNN investigations, alongside research by human rights groups, have uncovered the private military company’s association with atrocities perpetrated against civilian populations in Mali and Sudan, where it has come to the aid of military juntas. The mercenaries have also been tracked in other African nations including the Central African Republic, Mozambique and Libya.

Wagner founder and financier Yevgeny Prigozhin was spotted in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Thursday, according to accounts associated with the mercenary group
Prigozhin celebrates Niger coup, says his Wagner group can help

Wagner founder Prigozhin blamed the coup in Niger on the legacy of colonialism, and said his group was capable of dealing with situations like the one unfolding in Niamey, though there are no signs yet that his offer has been taken up.

“What happened in Niger has been brewing for years,” Prigozhin said in a message posted on social media. “The former colonizers are trying to keep the people of African countries in check. In order to keep them in check, the former colonizers are filling these countries with terrorists and various bandit formations. Thus creating a colossal security crisis.”

As the coup was unfolding in Niger last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin was launching a charm offensive on African leaders at a summit in St. Petersburg, where he railed against Western colonialism and wooed attendees with gifts, including debt relief for Somalia, a mobile medical laboratory for Uganda and even a presidential helicopter for the leader of Zimbabwe.

The meeting was more sparsely attended than the Kremlin had hoped. Seventeen African heads of state showed up, far fewer than the 43 that attended a previous summit in 2019.
The poor turnout came days after Russia’s cancellation of a Ukrainian grain export deal angered some African leaders.

The Russian leader defended his withdrawal from the pact, which is crucial to food supplies on the continent, and pledged to send free grain to six African countries.

One of the recipients was Burkina Faso, where Ibrahim Traore seized power in a coup last October and has since distanced his country completely from France. The 34-year-old is Africa’s youngest head of state and was one of several junta leaders at the summit, during which he pledged the “support and friendship of the Burkinabe people” to Russia.

“The region is shaken up by the desire for change from different people,” Traore said in a speech at the summit. “This has led us to turn our backs on traditional partners and to turn to our real friends, like Russia which has supported us through decolonization until today.”

Traore also alluded to the coup in Niger, saying the military “was taking responsibility” for the country, and asking for support for the new junta. “We want the same thing … a multipolar world towards sovereignty … and a complete change of partners.”
Traore was given a hero’s welcome and was mobbed by a crowd on his return home.

“The military leaders are using the anti-French sentiment to stay in power,” said Ojewale, the ISS expert. “They claim to be the new messiahs but this time around, they are wearing Khaki (uniforms). It is anti-French populism.”

Ojewale says Paris has its work cut out to stem the tide of anti-French sentiment on the continent.

“The French needs to rebuild and repair with Francophone countries. That’s going to be very difficult to do. There’s a third wave of scramble for Africa. The British are coming. The Chinese are coming. The US is coming, Russia is coming. Everyone wants to trade with Africa.”

West African bloc sends delegation to Niger, says force is ‘last resort’

West African regional bloc ECOWAS sent a delegation to Niger on Wednesday to negotiate with the military officers who seized power in last week’s coup, while regional defence chiefs began a two-day meeting in neighbouring Nigeria.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed sanctions on Niger and said it could authorise the use of force if the coup leaders do not reinstate elected President Mohamed Bazoum within a week from last Sunday.

“The military option is the very last option on the table, the last resort, but we have to prepare for the eventuality,” said Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security.

“There is a need to demonstrate that we cannot only bark but can bite,” he told reporters in Abuja.

The delegation to Niger is being led by former Nigerian military leader Abdulsalami Abubakar, who arrived on Wednesday to start talks with the military government, Musah said.

Other details about the mission remain unclear as Amos Lungu, spokesperson for the ECOWAS Commission did not respond to Al Jazeera’s requests for comments.

The military government in Niger is led by the former head of Bazoum’s presidential guard, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, who detained Bazoum in his palace last Wednesday and later declared himself head of state.

ECOWAS has previously sent Benin President Patrice Talon and Chaidan interim military leader Mahamat Idriss Deby to negotiate with Techiani.

The bloc has struggled to contain a democratic backslide in West Africa, as member states Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have also seen coups in the last two years, along with an attempted coup in Guinea-Bissau.

But now ECOWAS has taken its hardest line yet on Niger, announcing a number of sanctions including the closure of the region’s borders with the country.

The bloc also slapped financial sanctions on the coup leaders and the country, freezing “all commercial and financial transactions” between member states and Niger, one of the world’s poorest nations, often ranking last on the United Nations Human Development Index.

A source at Niger’s power company Nigelec told the AFP news agency on Wednesday that neighbouring Nigeria has disconnected the high-voltage line transporting electricity to Niger. The latter depends on Nigeria for 70 percent of its power.

The sanctions have prompted Mali and Burkina Faso, both still ruled by the military, to say that any intervention in Niger would be considered a declaration of war against them, too.

Niger is a key Western ally in a fight against armed groups and the coup has been condemned by foreign powers who fear it could allow the groups to gain ground.

“The UK very much welcomes ECOWAS’ actions and [they] are indeed decisive actions with a strong commitment to democracy,” said British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly after meeting Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Wednesday.

The coup leaders announced overnight they had reopened Niger’s land and air borders with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Libya after closing them last week.

The reopened land borders are mainly in remote desert areas. Niger’s key entryways for trade and commerce remain closed due to imposed by ECOWAS.

France, the United States, Germany, and Italy have troops in Niger on anti-rebel and training missions, helping the army to fight groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).

There has been no announcement of troops being withdrawn so far. Germany’s defence minister said on Wednesday that there were no concerns about the safety of German soldiers.

Any Western military intervention to restore democracy must be ruled out, as it would be “perceived as a new colonisation”, said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Mnangagwa Declares Victory Before Polls

The Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed party members in Bulawayo on Wednesday.

Speaking at a star rally in the city of Kings, Mnangagwa claimed victory before polls.

Snippets from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU PF Bulawayo Star Rally Address:

I am very happy to be in The City of Kings and Queens. Thank you Bulawayo Omuhle for coming out in your numbers to support the party. Your presence is proof of your determination to protect our vote, freedom, peace and unity…

I thank you all Bulawayo Province, Well done.

I commend you for the great peace even upon provocation from pseudo-political parties.

Zimbabwe is a unitary state, we are a very peaceful and humble people, we are one PEOPLE.

ZANU PF IS people’s is a party for and by the people. We brought democracy from the protracted liberation struggle.

This month, we are going to be remembering our heroes and heroines who laud their lives for our independence. We honour all of them.

On the 23rd of August, we want to vote for ZANU PF to ensure a resounding victory, ZANU PF won yesterday, it will win tomorrow.

ZANU PF is unstoppable.

The opposition has failed across the country, and all the local authorities they control are a shame… Shame, shame, shame on you the opposition!

ZANU PF delivers, it is about action yet all the opposition does is talk with no tangible results.

Under our party, we are on the road to delivering a higher quality of life, we are a people’s party, and sustainable development is seen everywhere.

ZANU PF is uncontested in some parts of Bulawayo, not because it stopped anybody, but because they stopped themselves.

Victory is certain, victory is on the horizon, the sun is coming up and it will only shine for ZANU PF.

I want to remind the opposition that the State House is very far. They’d rather walk to America on foot than dream of ever reaching the State House.

In the last three years, Zimbabwe has been the fastest-growing economy in SADC.

We are building our country on the basis of our own domestic resources.

Under the Second Republic, we have plans to revitalise Bulawayo into an industrial hub.

The first port of call is water provision.

Nyamandlovu Aqua Farm was my first step, followed by the Gwayi-Shangani Dam. Once all these are complete, water woes will be history

The second is energy, hence we built Hwange 7 and 8 with help from China.

Each one of us, as long as we are Zimbabwean, should engage in production.

There are three principles you should teach your children; Nyika inovakwa, igonamatirwa, igotongwa nevene vayo.

I am upgrading Beitbridge Border Post. Joshua Nkomo Airport has more airlines coming into Bulawayo because of the Second Republic and work has begun to upgrade the Beitbridge- Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway.

I don’t want bullying in schools, our children must respect each other and be patriotic that we leave the country in safe hands.

I am aware that some of our families have been staying in houses for about 30 years with no title deeds, but under The Second Republic, we will ensure that they all have title deeds.

This is the philosophy of ZANU PF that no one and no place will be left behind.

Under the Second Republic, international sport is coming to Zimbabwe.

We are also refurbishing Babourfields Stadium, the home of Highlanders who are doing very well with 17 games unbeaten. Congratulations Highlanders!!!!!!!

Young people must reject and refuse the use of drugs, no nation can develop under the use of drugs.

We, your leaders want to leave Zimbabwe better than we found it, but we don’t want to leave it to a drunk generation.

Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none, but there is nothing we can do about those who choose to hate us.

We have invited foreign observers to come for our elections, but those countries who have already taken a position on the elections are not welcome.

We are inviting those who are not biased, we have upheld constitutionalism by holding elections every 5 years.

Once again I want to express my gratitude, as I conclude, to you Bulayo omuhle for coming, we shall remain one people, united and working towards one goal.

We are solid, we know where we want to go and forward we go.

23 August, the People’s victory is achievable under ZANU PF.

Now I say to you, we want peace, shun violence, and guard against detractors who may lead you astray.

I THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Donald Trump indicted for efforts to overturn US 2020 election

0

Donald Trump was indicted on felony charges Tuesday for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol, with the Justice Department acting to hold him accountable for an unprecedented effort to block the peaceful transfer of presidential power and threaten American democracy.

The four-count indictment, the third criminal case against Trump, provided deeper insight into a dark moment that has already been the subject of exhaustive federal investigations and captivating public hearings.

It chronicles a months-long campaign of lies about the election results and says that, even when those falsehoods resulted in a chaotic insurrection at the Capitol, Trump sought to exploit the violence by pointing to it as a reason to further delay the counting of votes that sealed his defeat.

Even in a year of rapid-succession legal reckonings for Trump, Tuesday’s indictment, with charges including conspiring to defraud the United States government that he once led, was stunning in its allegations that a former president assaulted the “bedrock function” of democracy.

It’s the first time the defeated president, who is the early front-runner for next year’s Republican presidential nomination, is facing legal consequences for his frantic but ultimately failed effort to cling to power.

“The attack on our nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy,” said Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, whose office has spent months investigating Trump.

“It was fueled by lies, lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government: the nation’s process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.”

Trump lawyer calls indictment an ‘attack on free speech and political advocacy.’

The Trump campaign called the charges “fake” and asked why it took two-and-a-half years to bring them.

Trump was the only person charged in Tuesday’s indictment. But prosecutors obliquely referenced a half-dozen co-conspirators, including lawyers inside and outside of government who they said had worked with Trump to undo the election results.

They also advanced legally dubious schemes to enlist slates of fake electors in battleground states won by Democrat Joe Biden to falsely claim that Trump had actually won them.

The indictment accuses the defeated president and his allies of trying to “exploit the violence and chaos” by calling lawmakers into the evening on Jan. 6 to delay the certification of Biden’s victory.

It also cites handwritten notes from former Vice President Mike Pence that give gravitas to Trump’s relentless goading to reject the electoral votes.

Pence, who is challenging Trump for the GOP presidential nomination, declined overtures from a House panel that investigated the insurrection and sought to avoid testifying before the special counsel.

He appeared only after losing a court fight, with prosecutors learning that Trump in one conversation derided him as “too honest” to stop the certification.

Trump is due in court Thursday, the first step in a legal process that will play out in a courthouse situated between the White House he once controlled and the Capitol his supporters once stormed. The case is already being dismissed by the former president and his supporters — and even some of his rivals — as just another politically motivated prosecution.

Yet the case stems from one of the most serious threats to American democracy in modern history.

The indictment centers on the turbulent two months after the November 2020 election in which Trump refused to accept his loss and spread lies that victory was stolen from him.

The turmoil resulted in the riot at the Capitol, when Trump loyalists violently broke into the building, attacked police officers and disrupted the congressional counting of electoral votes.

In between the election and the riot, Trump urged local election officials to undo voting results in their states, pressured Pence to halt the certification of electoral votes and falsely claimed that the election had been stolen — a notion repeatedly rejected by judges.

Among those lies, prosecutors say, were claims that more than 10,000 dead voters had voted in Georgia along with tens of thousands of double votes in Nevada. Each claim had been rebutted by courts or state or federal officials, the indictment says.

Prosecutors say Trump knew his claims of having won the election were false but he “repeated and widely disseminated them anyway — to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, to create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and to erode public faith in the administration of the election.”

The document carefully outlined arguments that Trump has been making to defend his conduct, that he had every right to challenge the results, to use the courts, even to lie about it in the process.

But in stark detail, the indictment outlines how the former president instead took criminal steps to reverse the clear verdict voters had rendered.

The indictment had been expected since Trump said in mid-July that the Justice Department had informed him he was a target of its investigation. A bipartisan House committee that spent months investigating the run-up to the Capitol riot also recommended prosecuting Trump on charges, including aiding an insurrection and obstructing an official proceeding.

The indictment includes charges of conspiring to defraud the U.S., conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing an official proceeding and violating a post-Civil War Reconstruction Era civil rights statute that makes it a crime to conspire to violate rights that are guaranteed by the Constitution — in this case, the right to vote.

The mounting criminal cases are unfolding in the heat of the 2024 race. A conviction in this case, or any other, would not prevent Trump from pursuing the White House or serving as president, though Trump as president could theoretically appoint an attorney general to dismiss the charges or potentially try to pardon himself.

In New York, state prosecutors have charged Trump with falsifying business records about a hush money payoff to a porn actor before the 2016 election. The trial is set to begin in March.

In Florida, the Justice Department has brought more than three dozen felony counts, accusing him of illegally possessing classified documents after leaving the White House and concealing them from investigators. That trial begins in May.

Prosecutors in Georgia are also investigating efforts by Trump and his allies to reverse his election loss to Biden there. The district attorney of Fulton County is expected to announce charging decisions within weeks.

Smith’s team has cast a broad net as part of his federal investigation, with his team questioning senior Trump administration officials, including Pence, before a grand jury in Washington. Prosecutors also interviewed election officials in Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and other battleground states won by Biden who were pressured by the Trump team to change voting results.

Rudy Giuliani, a Trump lawyer who pursued post-election legal challenges, spoke voluntarily to prosecutors. Giuliani was not named in the indictment, but appears to match the description of one of the co-conspirators.

A spokesman for Giuliani said Tuesday night that Trump had a “good-faith basis” for the actions he took.

Attorney General Merrick Garland last year appointed Smith, an international war crimes prosecutor who also led the Justice Department’s public corruption section, as special counsel to investigate efforts to undo the election as well as Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago. Although Trump has derided him as “deranged” and called him politically motivated, Smith’s past experience includes overseeing significant prosecutions against high-profile Democrats.

The Justice Department’s investigations began well before Smith’s appointment, proceeding alongside separate criminal probes into the rioters themselves. More than 1,000 people have been charged in connection with the insurrection, including some with seditious conspiracy.

Police Detained Apostle Christopher Kunda For Allegedly Assaulting Reverend Nelson Mhango

Divine drama as Lusaka Pentecostal leaders exchange punches

TWO leaders of the Pentecostal church movement in Zambia yesterday set their tongues and holy water aside as they resolved disputes with bare knuckle punches.

The ‘Men of God’ worsened the already bad windy and dusty weather that was battering Lusaka as their kicks and punches raised extra dust like a tornado had hit the vendorless town.

At the centre of the fight was young Apostle Christopher Kunda, 45 of Presence of God Ministries International and Senior Reverend Nelson Mhango, 62 of Bumper Harvest Church.

Apparently, the young Apostle instead of being a good shepherd of the Lord’s flock had started braiing some of his female sheep in the church, Presence of God Life Ministries.

His merciless devouring of his female flock caused a marital dispute with his wife of Chalala, who engaged senior reverend Mhango of Matero of Bumper Harvest Church to counsel them.

The counselling session reportedly went on well in Chilenje but all hell broke loose on the way back as the senior reverend was being escorted by the Apostle back to Matero.

According to sources close to the matter, the trio stopped over at a Society Business Park in town for dinner when Apostle Kunda bought nshima and T-bone.

However, as the alleged promiscuous Apostle was deeping his hungry teeth in the meat, the reverend again warned him not to be ‘eating’ his church members like he was eating the T-bone.

Allegedly, this annoyed Apostle Kunda so much that he took matters personal and punched the impwa and visashi out of the mouth of Reverend Mhango.

As confirmed by the police, the bruised and battered Reverend Mhango feared for his life and ran a marathon from Lusaka Town Centre over the Post Office Flyover Bridge and sought refuge in Lusaka Central Police were a case of Assault was recorded.

Subsequently, police detained Apostle Kunda to provided an explanation to police on how he resorted to violence and not prayer against those who comment on his alleged infidelity.

Lungu’s daughter, Chiyeso asks court to set aside forfeiture of assets case

EDGAR Lungu’s daughter Chiyeso has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to throw out the case in which the State wants to grab her properties worth K9.3 million on suspicion that they were amassed through graft.

She said the Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri has instituted an action against her yet he had failed to serve her the court documents.

Chiyeso, who was inaugurated as a practising lawyer in 2018, has two farms with a high-cost house, four chicken runs and three flats in Lusaka’s State Lodge area, property worth K9, 375, 438.62, and acquired between 2013 and 2021.

She is also the owner of Crest lodge in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill.

But according to the DPP, there was no way Chiyeso could have owned property worth that much because investigations show that the former president’s daughter only opened her first bank account with FNB on December 9, 2014 and had no significant transactions since it was opened until 2018 when she started using it as a salary account.

Filing an affidavit in support of notice of a non conviction based forfeiture order in the Economic and Financial Crimes Court on behalf of the DPP, Emmanuel Khondowe submitted that Chiyeso’s property be forfeited to the State.

He argued that the former president’s daughter has assets that are disproportionate to her income neither did she have viable sources of income.

But in her affidavit in support of summons to set aside proceedings for irregularity, Chiyeso stated that on June 23, 2023 she was served with a letter and an affidavit in support of originating notice of motion and skeleton arrangements attached to it.

She stated that in the said letter, the DPP advised that she would be served the originating notice of motion later.

Chiyeso said to date she has not been served the originating notice of motion relating to her ‘graft’ case and she is ignorant about the reliefs sought by the State.

She stated that the DPP has a mandatory obligation to serve her with the originating notice of motion.

“As an interested party, I am entitled to not less than one month’s notice from the date of receipt of the originating notice of motion,” Chiyeso said.

“The failure or neglect on the part of the DPP to serve me with the originating notice of motion is an irregularity warranting the setting aside of the originating process. In the circumstances I verily believe that I apply to have the process set aside for irregularity.”

She indicated that she has proved that the DPP who moved a motion before the EFCC failed and neglected to serve or notify the interested parties in accordance with the mandatory prescribed rules of the Court.

THE ONLY SUCESSES HICHILEMA HAS SCORED IS 47 TRIPS IN TWO YEARS – KABIMBA

THE ONLY SUCESSES HICHILEMA HAS SCORED IS 47 TRIPS IN TWO YEARS – KABIMBA

By Fox Reporter
THE only success President Hakainde Hichilema has scored is 47 international trips he has made in two years since taking over power from former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Economic Front leader Wynter Kabimba has said.

Kabimba says President Hakainde Hichilema has scored success in travelling around the world, and not changing people’s livelihoods.

“HH has done very well in terms of traveling. He is on his 47th trip now to Israel in two years. There he has scored munyamata, asikoling’a apo munyamata. Like people have said, he will only come in to only swear two people and go back somewhere. So really if there is any successes HH has scored in the two years of being in government it is traveling,” Kabimba pointed out.

Kabimba said he worked with late president Michael Sata who hardly travelled, adding that President Hichilema would do better staying home to resolve issues affecting the nation rather than running away in the name of marketing the country.

He wondered what results President Hichilema has brought back home in his 47th trips made in just two years of being in government.

“We are being told now by UPND that the reason he is traveling is because he is marketing this country. He has been marketing this country for two years, tell me which factory have you seen in this country which has been put up out of HH’s traveling?” he asked.

Kabimba says he can’t see results out of President Hichilema’s trips, apart from spending huge sums of money which is a cost on the poor people.

“I can’t see anything myself; I can’t see any results. Unless someone can show me that. We were told on the first Sunday interview of Situmbeko Musokotwane when the UPND got into power and this is what he said,” we are going to invite into Zambia foreign investors that are going to put up factories and those factories will offer employment for our people.” Those were his words paraphrased. Show me one factory which has employed the youths of Zambia in the last two years of HH in power. Show me the marketing HH has done which has changed the livelihood of the Zambian people. The answer is zero,” he said.

Kabimba said most important meeting President Hichilema has attended are just a talk show as they do not have a direct or indirect effect on the people of Zambia.

He said even the African Union (AU) summits are just a talk show as nothing has come out to benefit the people of Zambia.

Kabimba said President Hichilema should be mindful that the people of Zambia voted for him to change their livelihood and not to put foreigners first as the case was under the UPND regime.

He said this when he featured on Hot Seat radio programme on Tuesday.

WE HAVE SECURED SCHOLARSHIPS IN RUSSIA FOR OUR STUDENTS – M’MEMBE

WE HAVE SECURED SCHOLARSHIPS IN RUSSIA FOR OUR STUDENTS – M’MEMBE
….as he laments the growing inequality, poverty, unemployment, despair and anxiety in Zambia
Lusaka, Wednesday, August 2, 2023 ( Smart Eagles)

Socialist Party Leader Dr Fred M’membe has returned home after his fruitful outing at the Africa-Russia Summit in Saint Petersburg.
Speaking upon arrival, Dr M’membe said, “we have secured scholarships for Zambian students wishing to study in Russia.”
Dr M’membe said this followed interactions with his Russian Counterparts.

“We managed to learn a lot from them, we also had good exchanges with our friends from West Africa. They explained what is happening in that region and the factors leading to whatever is happening,” Dr M’membe said.

He has however lamented on the growing inequality, poverty, unemployment, despair and anxiety in Zambia.
Dr M’membe said the challenges the people are facing are huge and they need urgent attention.

“There is growing inequality and poverty in the country. There is also growing anxiety, and despair in the country. People do not know how tomorrow will be. You go to bed without knowing what you will eat tomorrow. This is causing a lot of stress for our people. The death rate is increasing. There is something that has gone wrong in the country,” he said.

The Socialist Party President said despite being away from Zambia, he followed keenly what was happening such as the ill treatment of Street vendors, fuel increase, threats to demolish COMESA market stands and the postponement to announce the way forward on Mopani and KCM mines.

“We were also following what was happening, the chasing of street vendors, the threats to demolish COMESA. This country is not going to be a good place for any of us to live in, if it is not a good place for all of us to live in. We were also following the issues on the mines. We were promised that the issues of the mines would be sorted out by month end last month but nothing has happened,” he said.

JOINT CSO PRESS STATEMENT DATED 2ND AUGUST 2023 ON THE RISING COST OF LIVING IN ZAMBIA

0

JOINT CSO PRESS STATEMENT DATED 2ND AUGUST 2023 ON THE RISING COST OF LIVING IN ZAMBIA

We, the undersigned Civil Society Organizations, note with concern the rising cost of living in Zambia.

The cost of living as measured by the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflections’ (JCTR’s) Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (BNNB) has been on the rise reaching a mid-year average point of K9,126.40 in Lusaka, while the national average basket stands at K6,466.04 for a family of five.

The rise in the cost of living has been on account for several factors including the rise in commodity prices such as mealie meal and retail fuel pump prices.

Inflation has remained in its double digits at 10.3% in the month of June 2023 keeping it outside the target range of 6-8%. Similarly, the Kwacha has continued to depreciate against major global currencies averaging K19.05 per US Dollar in the first half of the year.

The cost of the country’s staple food, mealie meal, has increased to a record level of K300 per 25kg bag in some parts of the country.

Just yesterday, the retail pump prices of petroleum products were equally increased. Petrol was increased by 2.57% while low Sulphur diesel by 6.81% and they are now selling at K25.57 and K23.36 per litre respectively.

As Civil Society, we are also concerned with the way Government is undertaking the process of removing vendors from the street.

While we are in supported the actions to remove vendors from the streets and re-allocate them in designated marketplaces, it would have been important for Government to adequately sensitize the vendors on the merits of this process.

The majority of Zambian’s are in the informal sector, hence removing them from the streets without clear adequate alternative spaces would make their lives quite unbearable.

The soaring cost of living is already causing great hardship to many Zambians, the majority of whom are just scraping a living.

The situation may be worsened by the removal of vendors from the streets without alternatives as it leaves a handful of them without trading places and ultimately with no incomes to support their livelihoods.

We also note that the high cost of living in countries such as Kenya and Nigeria have led to civil unrest. Indeed, economic hardship provides fertile ground for populist and authoritarian expressions to take root in the country.

Zambia has just emerged from a long period of economic and democratic decline which ordinary Zambians are still paying for today.
We therefore call on the government to –

1. Meaningfully and effectively communicate with the Zambian people on the state of the economy and outline measures they are undertaking to address emerging challenges from the social and economic reforms currently being undertaken;

2. Government should consider further activation of the Zambia National Service and the Zambia Correctional service to get on board and contribute towards maize production, this will help alleviate the rising costs related to mealie meal, further to that, it will create new job opportunities for the young people;

3. With regards to clean up exercise on street vending, while this is move is welcome, government will need to provide the assurance on the adequacy of alternative trading spaces, this calls for improved and reliable communication on where those alternatives are, and on the carrying capacity of those trading spaces;

4. Consider convening an economic indaba, this will greatly help in communicating to the citizens the state of economic and social affairs in the country, it will equally help citizens better understand measures government may be exploring to address challenges related to their livelihood; and

5. Engage meaningfully with critical stakeholders in industry and civil society on various social and economic reforms being undertaken, this will help with consensus building on a number of issues.

The Summoning Of PF Chitambo MP Hon Remember Chanda Mutale By Police To Their Headquarters Is Absurd- Edwin Lifwekelo

0

THE SUMMONING OF MCC.HON REMEMBER CHANDA MUTALE BY POLICE TO THEIR HEADQUARTERS IS ABSURD- EDWIN LIFWEKELO

03rd, August 2023. Lusaka

We have noted with grave concern the not only false but also alarming articles being circulated by UPND through out their social media platforms aimed at maligning our Member of Parliament for Chitambo Constituency Hon MCC Remember Chanda Mutale which has subsequently led to him being summoned to appear at force headquarters tomorrow.

It is an absolute absurdity for the UPND to continue to propel activities that are aimed at causing by elections in areas that we as the Patriotic Front have members of parliament using the police and other law enforcement agencies to pin things like murder on them.

We are appalled by the fact that the Zambia police would allow themselves to be used in such not only dangerous but also undemocratic schemes that have potential to plunge the country into total chaos.

We as a party are alive to the fact that UPND and zambia police undertook a trip to Chitambo where they went to exhume a body of deceased person named Mwitumwa who they now claim was killed at the instruction of Hon Mutale during a recent by election, all of which is utterly false and unfounded.

Hon Remember Chanda Mutale just like any other of our Members of Parliament is a law abiding citizen who is well aware of his rights and privileges as a citizen of zambia and will not abuse them for whatever reason.

The exhumation of a the body of the said deceased Mwitumwa by UPND cadres with authorized persons in the absence of the PF party as the people being accused only shows how shallow and desperate they are in trying to create unwanted by-elections in our strongholds.

We are aware that the first report recorded by police when the said Mwitumwa died indicated that he was shot but apparently after exhumation new reports have been recorded that suggest he was beaten to death.

We challenge the police to distance itself from this ugly innuendo being propelled by the UPND government against our member of parliament for Chitambo constituency.

To this effect the Police have taken and absurd step to summon the Hon Member of Parliament to their Headquarters in Lusaka for questioning over the same matter.

Lastly, we just want to vehemently warn the UPND and it’s leaders in government against investing in these cheap mediocre campaigns of short chaining our Members of Parliament.

Lamentations of a Praise Singer!

0

In a video that has since gone viral on several platforms on social media, Lusaka District UPND Information and Publicity Secretary, Matomola Likwanya, lashes out and vents frustrations at the UPND government for what he calls failure on the part of leadership to take care of the welfare of party cadres. This was of course after the Lusaka City Council swung into action and attempted to demolish the Carwash he was trying to mount up along the Tokyo Ring Road in one of the capital’s suburbs. You could see the young man was in great pain. There’s little doubt he had a lot on his mind.

Although we may not agree with the manner Matomola tends to come out on certain issues at times; those in leadership ought to pay attention to the litany of his complaints. Something is definitely amiss somewhere, somehow!

“We would camp at your houses during our days in opposition to provide security to you when PF thugs threatened to attack you or whenever the police attempted to arrest you. We would tirelessly move visit TV and radio stations to defend and explain party policies. We’ve machete scars on our heads……we were hacked with pangas!” cried the outspoken party official.

He goes on to complain that he had to drop out of the prestgious University of Zambia (UNZA) where he was pursuing further studies under the auspices of the distance learning programme as he was condemned to prison for political reasons. He further reminds those in leadership that he and colleagues invested a great deal of time and resources mobilizing for the party although “they’ve now been neglected.”

“We”re suffering…..we’ve no money to pay rent,” he continues. “On a number of occasions, the president has advised us as young people to form companies or cooperatives as a way of generating income. I had to sale my car to invest in this Carpark business.”

There’s no need to pretend; this is a serious indictment on the ruling party, particularly the office of the Secretary General of the party who is of course the Chief Executive Officer! It’s quite interesting that the party can afford to continue keeping quiet when the likes of Likwanya are raising such contentious issues which may expose the party and its government to absolute contempt and ridicule.

Imagine a situation whereby you used to toil with comrades in the trenches eating ‘tute nembalala’ and suddenly you see them move to plush neighbourhoods and chauffeur driven in sleek SUVs as they boast of fat Bank accounts……The earlier the UPND leadership comes to terms with the reality on the ground and devises ways of taking care of its party members, the better! Of course we are not suggesting that UPND must emulate the brutal regime of PF and start dipping their hands into government coffers. There are always better ways of doing this. For instance, the party can introduce a village banking system (Icilimba) where party members can access interest free loans to set up their businesses. Fred M’membe is step ahead in thus regard as he’s already securing scholarships in Socialist states and disbursing empowerment packages to his rank and file.

Don’t ask about where the capital is going to come from; the same way you are asking ordinary members to sacrifice is the same way Cabinet ministers, senior government officials and diplomats must sacrifice part of their income to help those in need!

Matomola says, “We don’t get paid as party officials…….we are just volunteers!” What does this speak to you? He’s probably not the only one complaining. It’s important to keep your members satisfied to avoid outsiders jumping to wrong conclusions.

Remember, 2026 is fast approaching; you will definitely call upon members in Chibolya, Chipulukusu, St. Anthony, Ipafu and many other places where squalor and poverty is the norm to mobilise support for you, disseminate information on your behalf and definitely vote for you!

Forewarned is forearmed! Mulekutika?

Trump Case, Sounds like Africa’s Democracy- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba
Trump Case, Sounds like Africa’s Democracy

If the United States went to an election today, the polls show that former president, Donald Trump will trounce both his competition in the Republican party or the incumbent President Joe Biden.

And the more popularity that Trump garners, the more raft of criminal charges piles up against him.

Sounds like the Democracy practiced in Africa where competitors are barred from participating or are destroyed, whether through jailing or being brutalized, tortured, or killed.

It’s the first time the USA Department of Justice has ever indicted a former president.

Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 electoral result or defeat has been criminalised. Trump is adamant that the Democrats stole the election.

The protest by his supporters against the elections results at Capitol Hill has been deemed treasonous or an act of insurrection.

President Biden won 81,283,098 votes, or 51.3 percent of the votes cast. He is the first U.S. presidential candidate to have won more than 80 million votes.

Trump, on the other hand, won 74,222,958 votes, or 46.8 percent of the votes cast.

And the final tally in the Electoral College was 306 to 232.

That’s the largest total voter turnout in U.S. history and the first time more than 140 million people voted. Voter turnout in 2020 was the highest in 120 years when measured as a percentage of the voting-eligible population: 66.7 percent.

Trump is now facing charges of subverting democracy by allegedly trying to steal an election he allegedly knew he had lost among other charges.

The timing of the charges are suspicious. To reduce his chances of participating, or reduce his electability, in the upcoming election both in the primaries and national election, his court appearances dates are packed between now and the next election in 2024.

If Trump manages to participate and win ,all the charges against him will probably be dropped, but if Trump loses the election, he’ll face the prospect of prison time.

I guess Africa has exported its brand of Democracy to the USA.

Rights activist Brebner Changala says HH lied…to get the vote from Zambians

Rights activist Brebner Changala says HH lied

…to get the vote from Zambians

By CAMNET TV-04.07.23

Brebner Changala, the voracious Zambian civil and human rights activist has accused President Hakainde Hichilema of lying to win office in the 2021 election.

Changala says going forward, Zambians must push for ´better laws´ and not ´good people´because only institutions can serve Zambians while people can change as shown by Mr Hichilema since he assumed office.

“Mr Hichilema knelt down and begged for a vote from Zambians telling them he would be a better leader but it was all lies looking at what is happening,” said Changala.

The rights activist one of the staunch and major supporters of Mr Hichilema ahead of the elections further described the President as a “loose cannon” who wont hesitate to shut down any critic.
“During the PF if an opposition leader was arrested, Mr Hichilema included,” said Changala, “the blame was placed on ECL (President Edgar Lungu) so it means if someone gets arrested now under Mr Hichilema or abducted, the President is responsible.
We need good laws not good men. People are being wrongfully detained using the same bad laws the UPND condemned but now embrace because they work for them.”

On the same programme former Ambassador to the Africa Union (AU) and Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba narrated his horrendous arrest and brutalisation at the hands of 12 plain clothes men purpoting to be police but did not identify themselves.

“Talking about my arrest, how I lost a tooth and possibly had my shoulder dislocated is perhaps not important at this point compared to a damning report by the Department of State in Washington that has catalogued an extensive number and incidence of human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests, and other crimes under President Hichilema over the period covering 2022 to date. He gave the case of Mumbi Phiri arrested and detained for almost eight months or 429 days before being released on a nolle prosequi.

Ambassador Mwamba also complained that accusations of forgery against him are false hence the reason he has not been taken to court up to now after being abducted like a common criminal.

“I can’t stoop from being Ambassador to forgery this is a lie deliberately thrown out there to tarnish my good name built over decades just because I have dissenting views on national issues, I speak about issues not people that’s my style of politics,” said Ambassador Mwamba.
Mwamba gave an example of other politically inclined persons such as lawmakers Christopher Shakafuswa, Munir Zulu that have been ´harassed´ in similar manner as him, even when President Hichilema promised during campaigns that arbitrary arrests with no solid evidence would be a thing of history once he assumed office.

Conversely, Changala challenged the President to explain why he brought back into active service, a retired officer and one accused to be a fugitive.

The full programme hosted by Pastor Moses Chiluba is available on youtube and Camnet TV channel.
Mwamba challenged other civil society members to speak out against ills like Changala does while Changala wondered how the Human Rights Commission that spoke loudly under President Lungu does not speak today under President Hichilema.

Ambassador Mwamba bemoaned the fact that one Commissioner Laura Miti openly laughed and mocked the Ambassador publicly for his brutal arrest and losing a tooth certified to be true by a government medical Doctor.

The former envoy also expressed shock that both the Inspector General of police and the Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu both applauded the use ´minimum force´ against him while the law association of Zambia said minimum force use is not constitutional in Zambia, it is illegal.

Through his counsel Makebi Zulu and Corp, Mwamba has complained to the HRC, Amnesty International, Human Rights agency of the UN and the Zambia police complaints board seeking damages and an apology for his brutalisation and public humiliation.

KCM/MOPANI DEALS: A CASE OF UNTIMELY INACTION BEING WORSE THAN UNTIMELY ACTION- Fred M’membe

KCM/MOPANI DEALS: A CASE OF UNTIMELY INACTION BEING WORSE THAN UNTIMELY ACTION
Mr Hichilema’s government promised to sort out the issues of Mopani and KCM by the end of July. Today the dates have been changed to “we don’t know when”.

Clearly, after several months of illusions and posturing over Mopani and KCM, reality has dawned on Mr Hichilema and his far-right UPND government and they are now running back and forth. Even the lies have dried up as the truth steadily seeps in through the cracks on these two transactions. They are lost and stuck, and literally dangling from the ceiling like bats in broad daylight.

What’s the problem? What’s troubling them?

On KCM, the trouble is that Vedanta has spent money and promised to be given back the mine based on agreed terms, including some Key Performance Indicators that Mr Hichilema’s government has included in the draft agreement.
The Key Performance Indicators include the following:
1. An investment of more than $1 billion to develop KDMP;
2. Salary and wage increments for KCM staff;
3. Assume and pay-off debts owing to suppliers and contractors to KCM. These will be mainly debts incurred by the Provisional Liquidator and may be upwards of $300 million, excluding the electricity bill.

Should the Key Performance Indicators not be met, Vedanta will be compelled to offer its shares in KCM to ZCCM IH at a price. It would appear it is the asking price from Vedanta that might now be delaying the conclusion of the deal.
Vedanta is asking for upwards of $2.75 billion should the government invoke the Article to takeover the mines if Vedanta fails to attain certain Key Performance Indicators. It is incomprehensible that such an Article would even be considered because one wonders what safeguard measures have been put in place to safeguard GRZ/ZCCM IH/ and the people of Zambia, who are the ultimate beneficial shareholders in ZCCM IH, from Vedanta should Vedanta deliberately underperform so that ZCCM IH triggers the Articles for the Vedanta shares to be sold to ZCCM IH in the name of not meeting KPIs for Vedanta to automatically be owed $2.75 billion by ZCCM IH.
Should this information we have be true, then this imminent deal between Mr Hichilema’s government will surpass the Lungu government’s $1.5 billion deal with Glencore over Mopani.

Noticeably, there is something fishy about this deal and it can only be because Vedanta may have parted with some money to allow for such a bad deal against Zambians to be tabled for finalisation.

It cannot be wrong to assume that this deal might have an upside for some government officials pulling strings to make it happen. Your guess is as good as mine as to what level such deals are given the go-ahead.
As for MCM, it appears that after almost concluding with a Chinese group, the government has reopened the bid process by allowing a possible last-minute entry to be considered for its acquisition.

Whatever the reasons, it is now two years since Mr Hichilema was elected into office to manage Zambia with the promise that “Bally will fix it”. It appears Mr Hichilema either underestimated the challenges Zambia is and has been facing, or that may be “Bally” had no plan even after being given 16 years to prepare for the job.
The delayed capitalisation of the two mining operations has been and is too painful for Zambia, especially for the residents of the Copperbelt Province. Statements to the effect that the delay is “because the government wants to safeguard the interests of Zambians” are hollow and deceitful because it is clear that Mr Hichilema and the UPND had no plan to “fix” any challenges Zambia was facing before they were elected, and now the problems have grown bigger.

But armed with the painful history of the privatisation exercise and the activities of some negotiators/consultants who were implicated, we can only hope and pray that these seemingly continuous delays are not coordinated to enable a handful of business friends and partners to carve up the two mines, which have been the engines of the Copperbelt.
That is why, as responsible citizens, we strongly feel that we have a duty to demand total transparency in these two transactions to ensure that we prevent a situation where the same individuals with a checkered past or those connected to them, gain the right to take over the running of these prime ventures for a song or a mere fraction of their true value.

A repeat of thoughtless agreements, such as happened with the mine in Luanshya and how Grant Thornton – a firm where Mr Hichilema was at the helm of the consulting wing – got involved and was rewarded millions of dollars for the mine whose sale remains one of the enduring sources of tragedies in Luanshya and beyond, must never be allowed to happen again.

We must remain vigilant and not allow the swindlers of our mines during the sham privatisation exercise to return as messiahs of the Copperbelt. The architects of the existing poverty and squalor on the Copperbelt must not be given another opportunity to hoodwink our people into thinking that they have a solution to the issues surrounding Mopani/KCM. Let us not allow them to use public office for private gain.

Further, it is now inescapable for Bally to now explain whether he meant to “fix” the people of Zambia and not the problems they were facing, because clearly his delay in fixing the economy is fixing the poor people of Zambia. And the delay to “fix” the mines is indeed fixing the people of the Copperbelt. Its like the people of the Copperbelt are being punished for trusting Mr Hichilema and his campaign promises, which they have later learnt were built on total deception, lies and manipulation.

What is even worse, is Mr Hichilema’s lack of a sense of urgency in dealing with the prevailing desperate situation on the Copperbelt. He is taking his time as if he is not dealing with fellow citizens, his voters. But what more can one expect from an insensitive, greedy and plundering leadership? Our people must know that this leadership is about self-interest and the illicit amassing of wealth – they want to the first Zambian billionaires!

The suffering masses are not and will never be a priority. But we urge our people to remain resilient as we defend and protect our mineral resources and national wealth. And for Mr Hichilema and his league, to you we say, you have no justifiable reason to prolong the resolution of issues at Mopani/KCM. Look beyond your interests and rescue the masses. They have suffered enough. Have a heart; you don’t treat your fellow citizens this way.

As Lenin aptly put it, “Untimely inaction is worse than untimely action”.

Japan builds supply chain for EV battery minerals in Africa…Tokyo will team with Zambia, DR Congo and Namibia to expand exploration

TOKYO — Japan’s government plans to work with three African nations to develop supply chains for cobalt and other minerals critical in making electric vehicle batteries, Nikkei has learned.

Tokyo will team with Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Namibia to expand joint exploration in each country. The projects are due to start as soon as within the year.

Japan looks to diversify its sources of critical minerals, including lithium, in order to enhance economic security and counter China’s growing investment in African countries.

The Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, the state-owned resource explorer known as JOGMEC, intends to sign a memorandum of understanding with Zambia soon. JOGMEC also will finalize work plans with Congo and Namibia based on preliminary agreements already reached with the two countries.

Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan’s minister for economy, trade and industry, said Tuesday that he will visit the three countries, along with Angola and Madagascar, during his eight-day tour of Africa that will end Aug. 13. The signing of the memorandum of understanding and other agreements will coincide with the itinerary.

Though JOGMEC is active in Zambia, Congo and Namibia, no private-sector Japanese company has entered any of those countries to develop mining projects for critical minerals due to various risks and the large amount of capital required. A government-led effort to develop resources is seen helping draw private investment.

Japan and Zambia will begin to explore the entirety of the African country, expanding the scope of the search from cobalt and copper to include nickel. Through JOGMEC, Japan will provide remote sensing technology to identify potential mining sites using satellite imagery.

Tokyo will hold a conference with private businesses to address mining investment. Japanese companies such as Nissan Motor and trading house Hanwa are expected to attend.

In Congo, copper and lithium will be the targets of expanded exploration. A remote sensing center is being built in the country with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. JOGMEC will be among those to help train people locally in the technology.

For Namibia, Japan will agree to a work plan with Epangelo, Namibia’s state-owned mining company, looking to reinforce the supply chain for rare earths and other minerals.

Though Namibia is rich in zinc, copper and other resources, its supply chain remains underdeveloped. Yet Namibia has a large port that places the country in the running to be a major African export hub.

Japan seeks to become involved in developing African mines at an early stage with the goal of importing resources from the region. Tokyo will deepen relations with the three countries with an eye toward building an African supply chain capable of extracting, refining and transporting critical minerals.

Demand is growing for minerals such as cobalt and nickel, used to make electric vehicle batteries. Congo is responsible for 70% of the global supply of cobalt by volume. Africa is a major source of copper as well.

Chinese enterprises have invested heavily in Africa, especially in Congo. As a result, China has quickly expanded its market share in processing critical EV minerals.

If China restricts exports in response to tensions with the U.S., it would impede efforts by Japan and Western nations to bring EVs into the mainstream and reduce carbon emissions.

Japan and other Group of Seven industrial nations depend heavily on China and a few other countries for imports of critical minerals. During the group’s May summit in Hiroshima, G7 leaders agreed in the joint communique to work with developing nations to diversify the supply chain for critical minerals. http://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Supply-Chain/Japan-builds-supply-chain-for-EV-battery-minerals-in-Africa

HICHILEMA HAS FAILED, HE MUST RESIGN – WYNTER KABIMBA

By Fox Reporter
ECONOMIC Front Party (EF) leader Wynter Kabimba says the two year period of the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema’s reign has been disastrous and stressful for many Zambians.

Featuring on the Hot seat radio programme on Hot Fm yesterday, Kabimba said President Hichilema has been a disaster.

He explained that if the UPND and President Hichilema were to be evaluated, then the people of Zambia should benchmark them on promises made in the run-up to the 2021 general elections.

“The performance of the UPND in the last two years has not been as expected and the only way you can benchmark their performance is to go back to their campaign promises they made in the run up to 2021 general elections. I also know that they don’t want to hear this story, they don’t want to be reminded about what they said but you can’t erase history, the UPND promised the people of Zambia a better life than what they were enjoying under the PF,” he said.

Kabimba said that President Hichilema had crafted two main campaign messages based on the betterment of Zambians people if elected into government.

“HH was going around with two items during his campaign trial, and that is a small plastic bag of cooking oil and a small plastic bag of mealie meal and he was telling the people of Zambia how can they live under that quantity of mealie meal. HH had promised Zambians an affordable price of mealie meal so as to walk away from the ka pamela and the same was with cooking oil and those were the two major issues he picked from the campaign and now two years after being in government cooking oil is unaffordable to many of our people including those that are doing fine. Mealie meal is now hitting K300 and you can’t find a bag of mealie meal at less than 250,” he said.

He wondered what the UPND and President Hichilema has done to address the high prices of mealie meal and other essential commodities.

Kabimba noted with sadness the change of principles in the manner the UPND led government has overturned on its earlier promises to the people of Zambia.

“What has the UPND done against those failures, it is to change the narrative and start talking and projecting things they did not promise such as CDF. HH never spoke about CDF in the ran up to the elections, it was never near any promises he made. Among the promises he made was he would reduce mealie meal to K50 and make the lives of many poor Zambians affordable. He promised medicines in hospitals, he promised to have a proper health service delivery in the country, but look at what is happening in the health sector. It is all mess.

Issues of bread and butter have been a dismal failure of the UPND and President Hichilema in the last two years and I am sure of HH asked the Zambian people what they want between cheap mealie meal and CDF he will see that the answer will be cheap mealie meal,” he said.

Kabimba said the CDF was a big lie by the UPND as it was a hoax to entice poor Zambians to believe that government was disbursing the fund.

He insisted that there was no money for CDF as budgeted for and pronounced by President Hichilema.

Kabimba noted that if the UPND and President Hichilema were experiencing challenges in the governance of the country, they should acknowledge and get back to the people by a way of explaining the challenges met,
“But the biggest problem the UPND have is that they are not acknowledging their failures. HH has never acknowledged that I am sorry I promised that the Dollar Kwacha rate will come to 10 to 1, I am sorry about that, forgive me I am not God, I didn’t see what was going to happen in the future. HH has never come back to the people and say I am sorry I promised a K50 bag of mealie meal but it is k300, I made a mistake,” he said.

Kabimba argued that when President Hichilema was telling Zambians about cheap mealie meal he should have also thought about production.

He said the best thing President Hichilema must do is to resign because of failing to govern as committed during the campaigns to the run-up to 2021 general elections.

“When he was telling people about cheap mealie meal, was he thinking that production was going to come from his farm? Where did he think the production would come from? He told the Millers that you are in business, you are free to export mealie meal, you are free to peg the price at any rate as when you think it is okay. The fact is that HH has no experience of running government and has terribly failed to. HH and his people didn’t understand that government is a complected machinery. How many meetings has he held with almost everybody and nothing seems moving. So, you are asking me a question, what should they do? They have failed and any honorable person what they do when they fail, they resign. So, Hichilema must resign,” said Kabimba.

Would HH concede electoral defeat in 2026?- Chimwemwe Mwanza

By Chimwemwe Mwanza

Bamushanina bwali (praise singers) tulefulilakofye which is why the pool of critical minds capable of providing decent checks and balances to the incumbent government is shrinking – at an alarming rate for that matter. Could this be the reason why amidst this paucity in political discourse, the gist of a critical electronic posting (was it on twitter or X) by a hip shooting academic almost got drowned in infantile noises.

‘Lungu might help HH to peacefully concede defeat,’ – is one of the recent postings by Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa that has caused some consternation across the political aisle. Justifying his argument in the write up, he chronicled roles played by former Heads of State, from KK to Rupiah Banda – in resolving electoral disputes. Delving deeper, the apt summation of this write up infers that Lungu is unlikely to stand in the next elections but could however play the role of an arbiter in the event that President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) loses but refuses to concede.

Ghastly as it seems for the UPND faithful to fathom such a reality, this tweet implicitly entertains the prospect of HH losing the next Polls. You see, politics is habitually allergic to crystal balls. In any case ours is a constitutional democracy, we shouldn’t stifle free thinking. Hence this question, would HH concede if he lost? Let’s ignore the answer for now, I’m already fashioning expletives raining down on me for having a brain, the size of a bean pole. Ni mbanje ya bwanji yamene abema uyu mufana, Hakainde ku luza sure – loosely translated as, what type of weed is this lad inhaling to contemplate such a possibility?

Pitfalls of overconfidence

Borrowing a famous idiomatic expression coined by former British Premier Harold Wilson, a week is indeed a long time in politics – besides the Polls are almost 2 and half years away. That said, it’s thus implausible to give an outright prediction of who will win the next elections. Need we remind those that have forgotten the disappointment that characterised the over-confident cheer leaders of this chant, ‘Alebwelelapo pamupando’. Sarcastic as it reads, the President has crafted a better response for nay sayers seeking to defy political gravity. Natwikalapo, alebwelelapo pamupando wisa?
Naivety is rife in our body politic which is why disbelief tears and loud wailing shrouded the aftermath of the August 2021 Polls. It took statesmen, Bai Koroma, Jakaya Kikwete and Rupiah Banda to convince a crestfallen Edgar Lungu to concede. This is the nature of a beast called politics. Further afield in the land of the free which also boasts one of the world’s oldest democracies, the mop haired one still refuses to concede to Joseph Biden who trumped him at the polls – three years after he grudgingly left the White House for the quieter confines of Mara Largo in Florida.
Aside from the view that the UPND is the front runner – at least granted the fragmented opposition, it is only rational for other people to hold a different opinion. Lest we meander off this discussion, the gist is not to ascertain the UPND’s electoral prospects but determine whether HH has the magnanimity or temperament to accept defeat in the event that Zambians reject him in 2026. Back to the question, would he concede and quietly vacate the Presidency?

Travesty of Justice

Let’s take a step back. It took him five failed attempts to wrest the Presidency eventually succeeding on his sixth shot, a rare mark of resilience – Albert Einstein certainly has living equals. On his 5th attempt in 2016, he lost by a whisker – prompting him to seek redress from courts for what he claimed were electoral malpractices by the former governing party.

Did the court find merit in his claim? The Constitutional Court regrettably dismissed his petition on a technicality – this without hearing his argument. This judgement was a travesty of Justice, a blatant disregard of the law. In her own words, quote verbatim, Justice Hilda Chibomba admitted as much. ‘It is a painful decision for the court to take to dismiss the case without hearing the evidence, but there is nothing the court could have done considering the time limit provided to conclude the petition,’ reads a part of her judgement.

It’s HH’s response though to this judgement that provides us a glimpse of his ability to stretch his fight for his rights. ‘I never thought one day we will have a situation where an election petition will be dismissed without hearing evidence from the parties. Our position is that we came to this court to seek justice, but it has been denied to us by this court. And as such, we have not conceded in the just-ended Presidential election where the Patriotic Front was declared winner,’ he remarked. This was vintage HH in opposition then, steadfast, principled but defiant to the bitter end.

Would he concede?

Could a successful conclusion of his petition have swayed his mind – assuming the Judgement went against his party? Only he knows the answer. However, few would disagree that he never recognised the Lungu Presidency. In his eyes, the PF were an illegitimate government that had robbed him the most prized possession in Zambian politics. While he has brought decorum to the Presidency the HH who is stubbornly ensconced at Community House – to the chagrin of many is a vastly transformed politician to the one that was criss-crossing the country begging for votes ahead of the 2021 Polls.

History has a way of repeating itself. How ironic that once in power, his party has been able to easily bend laws purely for self-serving interests. Case in point – the UPND twisted the interpretation of a ruling by the same Constitutional Court – which by the way in 2016, declined to hear their petition to steal the Kwacha and Kabushi Parliamentary seats from the opposition. Then out went the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lillian Siyunyi. Never mind her transgressions, she too like the President has rights yet she was never accorded the opportunity to defend herself against a slew of charges laid before her – instead she was dealt a cold hand and left to hang in the court of public opinion.

HH has now tested power and he is using it to maximum effect. Is he using his position to entrench democratic tenets? You see, any politician that has scanty regard for the judiciary or rule of law is a danger to democracy. As the saying goes, a democracy where lies have replaced truth, where truth is illusive and where truth is secondary in the conduct of government business with no means of accessing or ability to question, dies in the end.
Would he concede?

The Pending Demolition Of 236 Stalls By Govt Is Heartless And Reckless- Saboi Imboela

THE PENDING DEMOLITION OF 236 STALLS BY GOVERNMENT IS HEARTLESS AND RECKLESS

01/08/2023

It is with deep concern and dismay that I address the recent decision by the Lusaka City Council, under the directive of the UPND Government, to demolish 236 Mobile Money Booths, stands, and stalls around COMESA Market. This exercise, scheduled for the 4th of August 2023, threatens to plunge many of our fellow citizens into a state of despair, leading to increased unemployment, crime, and hunger in our communities.

While we acknowledge the importance of maintaining order and adhering to the rule of law, the approach taken by the government in handling this matter is unacceptable. The livelihoods of hundreds of families are at stake, and we cannot turn a blind eye to the potential consequences that this reckless decision may bring upon our society.

We, in the National Democratic Congress, NDC, firmly believe that there are more credible and compassionate solutions to address the challenges surrounding the informal structures at Comesa Market. Instead of resorting to demolitions that will only exacerbate the hardships faced by many, we propose a multifaceted approach that involves collaboration between the government, market traders, and relevant stakeholders.

Firstly, the UPND Government should engage in a meaningful dialogue with the affected traders to understand their needs and concerns. By listening to their grievances, we can find mutually beneficial solutions that do not involve the destruction of their means of livelihood.

Secondly, the government should consider regularizing the operations of the mobile money booths, stands, and stalls, thereby bringing them under the purview of the law. This can be achieved by setting up a transparent and efficient registration process that ensures compliance with market regulations while safeguarding the interests of both the traders and the public.

Moreover, the government must prioritize job creation and support the growth of small businesses. By investing in skills development programs, access to credit facilities, and market expansion opportunities, we can foster an environment where entrepreneurship thrives and unemployment reduces significantly.

Additionally, efforts should be made to enhance security measures around Comesa Market to combat crime effectively. Collaborating with law enforcement agencies and empowering community policing initiatives can create a safer environment for traders and customers alike. Cleanliness, water and sanitation should also be prioritised. As Zambians, we now equate trading to a dirty environment due to failure of the Council to clean up these trading places.

Lastly, it is crucial that the government implements social safety nets to support those who may be adversely affected during this transition. Establishing a temporary relief program to assist displaced traders and their families can alleviate the immediate hardships they may face.

In conclusion, we stand united in condemning the demolition of 236 Mobile Money Booths, stands, and stalls around Comesa Market. We call upon the UPND Government to reconsider this decision and embrace a more empathetic and credible solution that upholds the dignity and well-being of our citizens. Let us work together to build a Zambia where prosperity and compassion go hand in hand.

Marcelo sent off in tears after breaking opponent’s leg

Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez was left with a broken leg after an accidental stomp from veteran Fluminense left-back Marcelo during a Copa Libertadores match in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Sanchez, 29, suffered the serious injury after Marcelo inadvertently stepped directly on his leg while attempting to make a move with the ball.

The former Real Madrid player was sent off in tears as the Argentine screamed on the pitch, surrounded by concerned players on both teams. The incident took place in the 56th minute of the match, which finished 1-1.

After the game Marcelo posted on social media: “Today, I had to experience a very difficult moment on the pitch. I have inadvertently injured a colleague. I want to wish you the best possible recovery Luciano Sanchez. I send you all the strength in the world!”

Gabriel Avalos opened the scoring with a volley for the hosts in the 14th minute of the first leg of the round-of-16 match. Argentinos later saw its goalkeeper Alexis Martin Arias sent off in the 76th minute, and be replaced by substitute midfielder Luciano Heredia until the end of the match.

Fluminense took advantage of the opportunity and equalized with Samuel Xavier in the 87th minute from long range.

The teams will play again next Tuesday at the Maracana Stadium for a place in the quarterfinals.

The Niger general who ousted a president he was meant to protect

In 2011, after two decades climbing the ranks of Niger’s army, Abdourahamane Tiani was handed one of the military’s most prized appointments: the head of an elite unit set up to protect the president.

Last week, Tiani, a general, used his position and manpower to do the opposite. He imprisoned President Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace and appeared on state television on Friday to declare himself head of state, confirming the seventh military coup in West and Central Africa in three years.

Tiani, 59, said that soldiers had seized power because of persistent insecurity driven by a decade-long Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands of soldiers and civilians across the Sahel, echoing justifications by military leaders in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso who have also snatched power since 2020.

“We cannot continue with the same approaches proposed so far, as it risks witnessing the gradual and inevitable disappearance of our nation,” he said.

The insecurity was close to home for Tiani, who was born in 1964 in a small village in the Filingué region in southwest Niger which has seen some of the worst fighting, including an attack on an army base in 2021 that killed 89 soldiers.

He attended local schools before joining the army in 1985 where he was posted across the country, including the northern town of Agadez during a Tuareg uprising in the 1990s, according to a biography released by the new ruling military council.

The document says he received training in France, Morocco, Senegal and the United States, where he attended the College of International Security Affairs at Fort McNair in Washington, DC.

He served as a commander and observer abroad for regional and United Nations’ forces during conflicts in Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, and has been decorated with some of the country’s highest military honours.

Now, Tiani has become a central player overseeing the fate of a region where Russian influence is on the rise and juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso have kicked out troops from former colonial power France. Regional powers have threatened military intervention if he does not return Bazoum to power within days.

Just last week, Niger, one of the world’s poorest countries, was seen as the West’s last ally in the region. Aid, investments and training rushed in from the United States and the European Union. French and U.S. forces are stationed there, though their future is now in doubt.

The speed of change in Niger is evident in Tiani’s biography. The document, seen by Reuters, was typed apart from one last-minute update scrawled in pen at the bottom of his list of jobs: “President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland, Head of State, 28 July 2023.” – Reuters

LIZZO ACCUSED OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND WEIGHT-SHAMING

LIZZO ACCUSED OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND WEIGHT-SHAMING

Pop star Lizzo is being sued by three of her former dancers over claims including sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.

The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, includes accusations of sexual, religious and racial harassment, discrimination, assault and false imprisonment.

Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez are the former dancers bringing the lawsuit.

Lizzo and others who are accused have been approached for comment.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, includes allegations the dancers were “forced to endure sexually denigrating behaviour” and were “pressured into participating in disturbing sex shows” between 2021 and 2023.

Among the claims against Lizzo – whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson – are that she “pressured Ms Davis to touch the breasts” of a performer in a nightclub in Amsterdam, and Ms Davis – after resisting – eventually acquiesced “fearing it may harm her future on the team” if she didn’t do so.

Lizzo – who is known for celebrating her body and self-love – is also accused, along with dance choreographer Tanisha Scott, of weight-shaming Ms Davis on tour.

Ms Davis alleges the two questioned whether she was “struggling with something as she seemed less committed to her role on the dance cast”, the lawsuit details.

Though never explicitly stated, the questions “gave Ms Davis the impression that she needed to explain her weight gain and disclose intimate personal details about her life in order to keep her job”, the lawsuit says.

Additionally, the lawsuit alleges the dance team’s captain, Shirlene Quigley, pushed her Christian beliefs on performers and derided those who engaged in premarital sex.

She is also accused of openly discussing one of the former dancers’ virginity, and posting about it on social media.

Accusations including racial discrimination are also levelled at production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc.’s management team.

It alleges black members of the dance troupe were “treated differently” to other members of the team.

They were accused of being “lazy, unprofessional, and having bad attitudes” – the lawsuit claimed these are tropes often used “to disparage and discourage” black women and that other dancers were not treated like this.

The plaintiffs also allege Lizzo and the production company team did not pay them fairly while on parts of Lizzo’s European tour.

They claim they were offered only 25% of their weekly compensatory pay during their time not performing on the tour, while other performers received 50% and they also claim they were told not to work on other projects while on tour.

Two of the three dancers involved in the lawsuit, Ms Davis and Ms Williams, met Lizzo in March 2021 while preparing to compete on the reality TV show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, the lawsuit says.

The third, Ms Rodriguez, was hired later in May 2021 to perform in Lizzo’s Rumours music video. She then remained part of the dance troop, it adds.

Ms Davis and Ms Williams were fired from the dance team, while Ms Rodriguez later resigned over the alleged treatment of her fellow colleagues. (BBC News)

Kasukuwere fights for spot on Presidential ballot paper; mounts ConCourt appeal

FORMER Zanu PF political commissar Kasukuwere has filed an application seeking direct access to the Constitutional Court following the dismissal of his appeal by the Supreme Court last week.

Kasukuwere seeks to be back on the ballot paper as a presidential candidate after he was removed by the High Court following an appeal by Zanu PF activist, Lovedale Mangwana.

Mangwana last month filed an appeal at the High Court challenging the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s decision to accept Kasukuwere’s nomination papers.

He argued that Kasukuwere ceased to be a registered voter at law, having spent over 18 months out of the country.

High Court judge David Mangota upheld Mangwana’s application prompting Kasukuwere to appeal at the Supreme Court where his application was thrown out for lack of merit.

Aggrieved, Kasukuwere has taken up the matter to the Constitutional Court where he is seeking direct access.

The matter is yet to be set down for hearing.

In his application, Kasukuwere said he never ceased to be a Zimbabwean adding that a constitutional matter has arisen after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal.

He also insisted that the High Court had jurisdiction to hear Mangwana’s application.

“My constitutional rights as enshrined in s67 of the Constitution were shredded and infected by the Supreme Court in all respects. In fact, the Supreme Court rendered a patently wrong judgment that constitutes an abdication of its judicial function which it must perform judiciously and in a non-capricious manner.

“I aver that as a Zimbabwean who has never on any day relinquished his residence status or citizenship, I cannot be barred from participating in an election in which I was duly nominated for by the Zimbabweans.

“Such a doing affects undoubtedly on my rights as a person. I have always remained a Zimbabwean citizen and resident as always. It is mind-boggling how a finding was reached by the Supreme Court that I be disqualified from partaking in an election that is people centered and never to be controlled by the judiciary.

“It is a violation of my political right to participate in an election and eventually hold office if elected. My disqualification by the High Court as confirmed by the Supreme cuts across this without any justa causa of doing so,” he said.

Kasukuwere said he must therefore be given audience by the Constitutional Court by granting his application for direct access.

“Critically, there is no order directing the second respondent to remove my name from the voters’ roll. As such, my name has been retained on the voters’ roll. On that account, the order that I cannot participate in the election is not underpinned by anything,” he said.

Kasukuwere said it was evident that the High Court had effectively taken over ZEC’s mandate to run elections.

“Mangwana filed the wrong application, he ought to have attacked my retention on the voters’ roll and not attacked my candidacy.

“I aver with respect that the dispute that has been brought to the High Court emanated from the process that was done in terms of the Electoral Act.

“As such, it is only the Electoral Court that could deal with the dispute and not the High Court,” he said.

Andrew Tate pleads for freedom from house arrest over s3x trafficking charges

They are appealing against a court decision made last month to keep the brothers under house arrest for a further 30 days.

Their appearance at the Court of Appeal in Bucharest today came after the influencer was formally charged with rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal gang to exploit women in June. Tristan and two Romanian women were charged with human trafficking.

It also comes hours after Tate made a misogynistic remark about a picture of Britain’s Got Talent Star Amanda Holden wearing a bikini while on holiday.

Influencer, Andrew Tate pleads for freedom from house arrest over s3x trafficking charges
Tate, who has been described as the ‘king of toxic masculinity’, responded to Ms. Holden’s tweet featuring a photograph of her taking a shower in a bikini by writing: ‘You are a wife and a mother and you’re far past a teenager. There is no need for this post.’

Influencer, Andrew Tate pleads for freedom from house arrest over s3x trafficking charges

Tate, who was arrested on December 29 in Bucharest and has denied the allegations, has lost a series of appeals against his house arrest and today he hopes that might change.

‘I am in the Bucharest Court of Appeal to find out if I will be detained for a ninth month,’ Tate wrote on Twitter today. ‘Three months in jail, six months locked in my house.’

After spending three months in police detention in Bucharest, the Tate brothers won an appeal on March 31 to be moved to house arrest.

Influencer, Andrew Tate pleads for freedom from house arrest over s3x trafficking charges
In June, Romania’s anti-organised crime agency known as DIICOT requested that judges extend the house arrest measure after it filed its investigation.

Tate, who has been accused of peddling conspiracy theories online and has amassed 7.2 million Twitter followers, has repeatedly claimed that prosecutors have no evidence against him and that there is a political plot designed to silence him.

DIICOT alleges that Tate, his brother Tristan and two Romanian women – Luana Radu and Georgiana Naghel – formed a criminal group in 2021 ‘to commit the crime of human trafficking’ in Romania, as well as in the United States and Britain.

There are seven female victims in the case, DIICOT said, who were lured with false pretences of love and transported to Romania, where the gang sexually exploited them and subjected them to physical violence.

One defendant is accused of raping a woman twice in March 2022, according to the agency. The women were allegedly controlled by ‘intimidation, constant surveillance’ and claims they were in debt, prosecutors said.

Last week, it was reported that leaked messages demonstrated how Tate coerced women into doing sex work for him.

When the influencer was arrested in Romania in December, authorities accused him of using the ‘loverboy’ method to lure women to his compound in Bucharest under the guise of having a relationship, before forcing them to do sex work.

According to Rolling Stone, citing screenshots of purported messages from the ‘War Room’ (Tate’s group chat with his followers) and other texts in 2021, the influencer described women as ‘targets’ and ‘assets’ and spoke of isolating and manipulating them.

In one purported message, he described how he isolated one woman until she ‘lost her support networks at home’ and kept her at the compound in Bucharest.

‘The real goal is for her to agree to never go anywhere without me. Not even her hometown. I need her working,’ he wrote, according to screenshots.

Tate also appeared to seek help from his associates to force one woman to post explicit content on OnlyFans, an internet content subscription platform used mostly by sex workers.

In the message, Tate tells followers he’ll be ‘making the play tonight’.
‘Since she moved [to Bucharest] she’s been fed. But nothing else,’ he wrote.

‘She’s broke. And she can’t go home. And she can’t leave the house. Man, I sound almost evil,’ he added according to the leaked messages.

Prigozhin: Wagner boss spotted in Russia during Africa summit

0

Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was photographed in St Petersburg during this week’s Africa-Russia summit.

He was seen shaking hands with Ambassador Freddy Mapouka, a presidential advisor in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The image was posted on Facebook by Dmitri Syty, who reportedly manages Wagner’s operations in CAR.

It is the first confirmed sighting of Mr Prigozhin in Russia since Wagner’s failed mutiny in June.

Mr Prigozhin and Mr Mapouka’s meeting took place at the Trezzini Palace hotel in St Petersburg, BBC Verify confirmed.

BBC Verify used facial recognition software to compare known photographs of the CAR official with the picture featuring Prigozhin and got a 99% match, indicating the two images are of the same man.

Details of the interior seen in the background of the photo were also matched to the Trezzini Palace hotel which, according to Russian media, is owned by Prigozhin.

The lanyard worn by Mr Mapouka has a distinctive pattern, which is identical to that of the official lanyard worn by delegates at the summit.

Searches for the same image did not find any earlier copies, which indicates it has only appeared online recently.

There are several hundred Wagner mercenaries in diamond-rich CAR, helping the government fight rebel groups. The UK last week imposed sanctions on the two heads of Wagner’s operations in CAR, accusing them of torture and killing civilians.

In St Petersburg, Prigozhin was also photographed with the head of Afrique Media, a Cameroon-based pro-Russian TV outlet, where he has been interviewed at least three times this year.

The meetings follow Mr Prigozhin’s appearance in Belarus last week. A video on Telegram channels linked to the Wagner mercenary group shows him welcoming fighters and describing recent developments on the frontline in Ukraine as a “disgrace”.

He also hints that Wagner might rejoin the war at a later date.

During the Africa-Russia Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to replace Ukrainian grain exports to Africa on both a commercial and aid basis to help avoid a “global food crisis”.

“We will be ready to provide Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, Central African Republic and Eritrea with 25-50,000 tonnes of free grain each in the next three to four months,” Putin said. These are all Russian allies, except Somalia which is suffering a severe humanitarian crisis.

Russia recently withdrew from a deal under which Ukrainian grain exports passed through the Black Sea to reach global markets, including Africa.

The EU said it believes Mr Putin is misleading African countries over his promise to send free grain to the continent. The European Commission said Russia was unlikely to honour its pledge.
