After A Lot Of Illusions And Arrogance Accompanied By Ignorance, Finally Hichilema Is Going To China- Fred M’membe

FINALLY, HICHILEMA IS GOING TO CHINA

After a lot of illusions and arrogance accompanied by ignorance, finally, Mr Hakainde Hichilema has conceded to guidance on the need to respect and uphold the traditional friendship between Zambia and China, and will embark on a state visit to the country next month (August).

We are glad that eventually, commonsense has prevailed over Mr Hichilema’s big-headedness and diplomatic ignorance on this matter of major interest to our country and its people.

Sino-Zambia relations are a traditional friendship established by the founding leaders of a senior generation of the two countries, Chairman Mao Zedong and Dr Kenneth Kaunda. And these relations have withstood the test of time because they have always been anchored in mutual trust, respect, and cooperation.

And so, as Mr Hichilema heads to China next month, he should take into account a few critical issues to enable him to represent our people and country well and prevent possible embarrassments to the country and himself as a leader:

• Let Mr Hichilema firmly and uncompromisingly stick to and reaffirm our country’s support for the one-China policy and unequivocally state that the government of the People’s Republic of China, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, is the sole legal representative of the Chinese people, and denounce US interference in the internal affairs of China over Taiwan.

• Mr Hichilema must appreciate that strengthening Sino-Zambia ties and China-Africa friendship and cooperation in general has always been a vital cornerstone of China’s foreign policy. And the Chinese have always been willing to work with Africa with mutual respect and equality in order to open up and advance new prospects of cooperation with practicality on a win-win basis.

• Mr Hichilema should realise that prostitution is for brothels and not for foreign relations. There is a need to stick to our traditional non-aligned policy and not allow our country to become an agent of US imperialism and its hegemonic agenda, and not allow AFRICOM to establish itself in our country.

• Mr Hichilema must exchange in-depth, genuine and unswerving views on Sino-Zambia ties with President Xi Jinping in order to deepen mutual trust, confidence, and cooperation between our two countries. There is no need for Mr Hichilema to start prostituting around clear matters of foreign policy, because the Chinese have always been consistent, sincere, and have helped Zambia in the cause of national development since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1964. The Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) line is one of the many historical testimonies to their genuineness and dedication.

• Mr Hichilema must realise that in order for Zambia to carry forward and sustain this inherited, traditional friendship between the two countries, frequent visits and exchanges are the surest way of cementing friendships closer and tighter. There was no need to wait this long to take this important trip, particularly when one considers the longstanding relationship Zambia shares with China.

• Mr Hichilema must value the relevant cooperation plans from China and seek to expand them in areas such as technology, agriculture, commerce and trade, infrastructure, and so on, to enable Zambia to realise economic stability and self-development.

• Mr Hichilema must also guarantee the legal rights of Chinese enterprises operating in Zambia and not harass them at the instigation of his friends – the US – and other imperialist governments he is fraternising with.

As we have always said, this particular state visit is crucial to resolving Zambia’s current economic glitches, and Mr Hichilema must attach importance and honesty to this engagement. Let him not go to China with the usual diplomatic illiteracy he parades – egocentricity and his habitual lies – because the people he is going to meet are not fools. They are well ahead of him and very refined. They have already studied his personality, inclinations, intellect, emotions, behaviours, and so on.

They will give him the full honours, ceremonies and pomp, which he seems to be enjoying so much lately, but if he proves to them that he is not a man of his word, they will never respect him as a decent human being, and that will be a great shame in the diplomatic history of our country, because China has been “a good friend, partner and brother” to Zambia and the Chinese have always held successive leaders of this country in high esteem and trust since the establishment of Sino-Zambia relations.

The die is cast. Zambia is watching!

Zambian Socialist leader to Escalate His Anti-HH Campaign.

Fred M’membe, the leader of the Zambian Socialist Party, is ramping up his attacks on President Hakainde Hichilema, accusing him of being a liar and unreliable for failing to fulfill his campaign promises. Multiple sources from M’membe’s party and the Zambia Intelligence community have revealed that he has selectively focused on the promises made by President Hakainde during his time in opposition, which he has yet to fulfill in his nearly two years in office.

M’membe, a former newspaper owner whose publication was shut down by the previous government due to non-compliance with tax regulations, established a political party based on the principles of the Cuban Socialist Party. Before entering politics, he used his Post Newspaper to promote his ideology and position himself as a key influencer in Zambian politics.

During his campaign, M’membe conducted a divisive tribal campaign that polarized politics and marginalized the Tonga people of Southern Zambia, the homeland of President Hakainde Hichilema and his party predecessor Anderson Mazoka.

Fred M’membe is widely seen as the source of sectarianism and ethnic hatred that characterized the ten years of the Patriotic Front, a party that Hichilema’s UPND defeated by a significant margin in the 2021 elections.

His sudden transformation from being one of Zambia’s wealthiest capitalists to a socialist has raised eyebrows. M’membe was once the proud owner of a Hummer SUV but failed to meet his obligations to his workers, including remitting their pension contributions, and evaded taxes for his newspaper.

He also co-owned an airline, Zambian Airways, which went bankrupt within a few months of its operation.

According to sources, Fred M’membe has been deeply unsettled by President Hichilema’s notable achievements in the negotiations for Zambia’s loan rescheduling, and he aims to undermine these successes. He has attempted to label Hichilema as an imperialist collaborator and a conspirator of white capital.

Hichilema has made significant strides in various socioeconomic areas. He has decentralized the processes related to the Constituency Development Fund, which were previously centralized in Lusaka. Additionally, he has substantially increased CDF funding across the board, by almost 300%, while implementing free education from primary to secondary school and reintroducing meal allowances for students in public universities. He has also been committed to fighting corruption and has eliminated political hooliganism perpetrated by thugs affiliated with the previous Patriotic Front Party government of President Edgar Lungu.

HH, The Tough And Most Consistent Bayern Munich FC Of Zambian Politics And How He May Win The Republican Presidency In 2021- Chris Zumani Zimba

Chris Zumani Zimba writes

HH, THE TOUGH AND MOST CONSISTENT BAYERN MUNICH FC OF ZAMBIAN POLITICS AND HOW HE MAY WIN THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENCY IN 2021

When I was president of the University of Zambia Political Science Association (UNZAPOSA) in 2006, I invited and hosted HH at Great East Campus for our weekly political event called “Meet the UNZA Students”. LT1 was filled to full capacity with hundreds of traditional UNZA monks and momas. The MMD government then equally hired and placed their own elite cadres to disturb and intimidate HH. The noise and confusion was uncontrollable and HH could not speak for the first 1 hour. In order to control the noise mob, I engineered and invited Antonio Mandala Mwanza (‘Pompey the Great’), then UNZASU President to speak first but the situation never changed much against my guest. How we resolved it is what constitutes my first attribute as to why HH is the Bayern Munich of Zambian politics with the right political tenacity and character to win the republican presidency in 2021.

“Mr President, I am afraid you may not address this hostile, drunken and noise audience as we are running late. What do you think”? I asked him. Cornelius Mweetwa and Emmanuel Tembo looked very troubled. To my surprise, HH looked relaxed, undisturbed, unshaken and unintimidated. The UPND leader smiled and said “I am ready and comfortable to address them because they cannot bite or kill me”, he responded. When I introduced him to address the house, he impressed everyone on how he diplomatically silenced the house and still managed to fantastically engage and address the students. This is exactly what HH is likely to do at national level in 2021 if he plays his political cards right and the gods remain on his side. In this 2006 UNZA encounter, I saw a true David in HH, a tough shepherd boy who can successfully fight with any lion, shark or elephant alone and unarmed in the jungle. His calm but notorious brave personality of Mfuwe hunters may positively help him to face 2021 with the right political attitude and mental framework to win the presidency in 2021 than most candidates; not even President Lungu will match him in terms of the psychological courage and mental preparedness to swim against the strong political storms of 2021. To me, HH’s background of being a shepherd boy (Kachema) gives him the right positive strong character of political courage-never being shaken, moved and intimidated by any political rival, audience or situation which makes him politically dangerous in the next elections.

In 2021 HH will be like Bayern Munich Football Club that has traditionally enjoyed the monopoly of easily winning the Germany League (Bundesliga) but repeatedly lost the UEFA either at semi or actual finals stage. In 2018 as you already know, Bayern Munich seem to be deadly fixed and structurally determined to win UEFA this time as past experiences seem to have taught them tough but noble lessons at the higher level. This football analogy for Bayern Munich presents the same political interpretation for HH as he has repeatedly lost the presidency either as 2nd or 3rd national choice since 2006 with a consistent thunderous victory in his home trinity provinces of Southern, Western and Northern Western. This simply means 2021 may sweetly present the republican presidency into his hands if he only tops to win three more provinces. As the ‘permanent regional president’ of his home three provinces who seem to be gaining political popularity in other regions., the negative political forces of regionalism and tribalism are certainly working to his favour and positively fueling HH to be the toughest and dangerous opposition candidate in 2021.

He will be the most experienced, popular and consistent presidential candidate in 2021: For having been on the presidential ballot since 2006, HH will be the most already known and popular presidential candidate in 2021 than all opposition leaders that will be contesting. Apart from Lungu if he will contest, HH will be the second most popular and known household political name countrywide in 2021 which places him at the right probability altar of voters and electorates’ gamble selection. Being the most experienced, known and consistent candidate is one of the exceptional advantages HH will be enjoying in 2021 that should not be undermined or ignored.

In the Football world, ‘FIFA One’ has either been for Genius RC7 of Real Madrid or Great Leonel Messi of Barcelona; that’s how Lungu and HH have stood since 2015. But now there is gifted Mohamad Salah for Liverpool in CK on the scene who stands dangerous to challenge and win ‘FIFA One’ too. Whatever the case, HH may become the most preferred alternative presidential candidate to Lungu in 2021 in many places. Countrywide, he is already known by most voters such that many voters who may feel and decide let down by the performance of Lungu may prefer to naturally try HH than anyone new on the political market unless the new corners undertake aggressive campaigns to sale themselves. By virtue of having contested consistently for the past 16 years, 50% of HH’s campaign is already done for 2021 as some voters still keep his party manifesto, regalia and materials while others consider him as the next heir to the Zambian throne.

The birth of anti Lungu political movements within PF such as the Dr. Chishimba Kambwili’s NDC and Harry Kalaba’s Political Cycle bring HH closer to State House in 2021 than before. In 2015 and 2016 respectively when Lungu was at his best in terms of political popularity and voter marketability, HH only lost with narrow votes respectively. Now that Lungu is losing national voter popularity and does not have some of his key MPs, Ministers and members to win him huge numbers such as CK or HK, HH is seemingly the new ‘Son of Zambia’ posed to win the 2021 presidency than even Lungu himself either in the first or second round vote on a one by one basis except that we may not accurately ascertain how much political injury the Socialist party, NDC or HK movements may do in his ‘trinity provinces’ and other regions where they boast to be strong too; the same political groupings which presents opportunities for HH also presents huge challenges for him.

HH’s regional supporters and ethnic voters in his ‘trinity provinces’ are dangerous passionate patriots, devoted diehard loyalists and reliable political followers who may play a deciding role in 2021. Since 2006 when HH was introduced to national political leadership, he has repeatedly beaten everyone in Southern, Western and North Western provinces with sure victory and his trinity regional voters keep improving in terms of both population explosion, political support, voter registration, voter turnout than Lungu’s provinces of Eastern and Northern. This is positive strength and advantageous political development for HH as there is no presidential candidate on the market who can boost of having such unique positive ingredients, political support base and guaranteed voter potency anywhere in Zambian for 2021 than HH in his trinity provinces; unlike CK who ‘may steal’ Copperbelt, Muchinga, Luapuala and Northern with big numbers, Lungu may fail to have to even three or more provinces to call ‘his own’ in 2021.

Has vast experience on how to win and lose the presidency in Zambia: As the chosen successor of Anderson Mazaka in 2006 who has consistently contested all presidential elections since then, HH will go into the 2021 Presidential and General Elections with most technical knowledge, vast campaign experience and most practical understanding and feel of how to win or lose the presidency in Zambia more than all presidential candidates especially that he has twice lost it by either a small or questionable margins. This puts him into a stronger and better position than most of his rivals.

HH is properly educated and has the right academic credentials for Zambia for 2021: Currently, Zambia is on its knees economically and practically running into sovereign bankruptcy due to the PF government multiple burden of loans and debts from all fronts. In 2021, HH may present himself and stand out as the right self-proclaimed economist and distinguished business tycoon to fix the economic mess and redeem Zambia from this growing national pain and public puzzle for the country than most presidential candidates. In fact, time has also redeemed HH from all malicious accusations that he sold Zambia during the FTJ era as all his accusers have terribly failed to find him with any wrong or criminality around such allegations.

In addition, HH is regionally and globally connected to the rich funders and supporters. He is not just an accomplished business tycoon, his Vice President in GBM is financially huge and brings other business allies to the party. The two UPND leaders who financially huge seem to have multiple peer wealth fellows and party campaign funders everywhere who may make it easy for HH to financially compete with the ‘PF Mukula Boys’. In the same vein, HH seem now to have his own parallel strong media networks and platforms in Zambia, in the region and internationally. This puts him a better position for 2021 as the public media with its PF-Lungu monopoly may count for nothing in terms of media coverage both print and electronic media. As he prepares for 2021, just like Lungu, HH has also many favourable private community radio and TV stations, social media platforms, blogs as well as print newspapers on his side.

In conclusion, we need to be quick to stress that this aforesaid critical analysis of HH’s existing political fortunes and candidature potency going into 2021 does not mean that the UPND leader is the automatic next heir to the throne of the Zambian Republican Presidency in 2021; that will be unscientific generalization and unprofessional misleading political prediction. The above analysis is based on the basic assumption that all current presidential candidates contested on their own tickets and the prevailing political dynamics across Zambia are held permanently constant from today until August 2021 which is terrifically too unlikely. This simply means that HH’s race to State House in 2021 is still too perilous marked with all diverse dark political clouds, heavy storms, thunderous lightening as well as other internal and external happenings that may dictate as to whether 2021 will produce good rains for him or leave him with the usual heavy dust without rains indeed; especially that we are not God, but simple humans and pretending to be fake angels on earth.

I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO INTERFERE WITH WITNESSES, LUSAMBO TELLS COURT

….says this is supported by witnesses who testified that he did not

Lusaka, Saturday, July 15, 2023 ( Smart Eagles)

Former Lusaka Province Minister Hon. Bowman Chilosha Lusambo has opened his defence in the matter he has been accused of attempting to interfere with witnesses.

It is alleged that Lusambo on unknown dates but between February 1 and April 30, 2022, in order to obstruct the due course of justice, allegedly endeavoured to prevent three people from giving evidence as witnesses before the court of law.

Appearing before Magistrate Trevor Kasanda, Wednesday, Lusambo stated that at no point did he attempt to interfere with witnesses.

Hon Lusambo testified that some time last year, after walking outside the court with his wife in the presence of numerous media houses, he jokingly told the media that instead of concentrating on him, “why don’t you also capture Siwakwi” who was his arresting officer.

In relation to the matter, Journalist Darius Choonya was called to testify in court Last year.

And Lusambo said he was shocked when the Anti-Corruption Commission called Darius as a witness on the allegation that he pointed at Siwakwi (Arresting officer) and the witnesses.

He further stated that he was not aware of the same witnesses he is alleged to have pointed at because at no point did the state provide a list of their witnesses.

Hon Lusambo said Darius only identified him in the Video evidence and not any witness when he testified.

Meanwhile, Hon Lusambo said he had no idea that his personal friend Ernest Sumani and Chamenda had been summoned by the ACC as none disclosed that to him.

“…In 2016, I became Minister for Copperbelt and I worked with Ernest Sumani as my subordinate and in a matter to do with the Local district in Ndola, I worked with Sumani and the entire Council so Ernest is not a stranger to me.

“When I met Sumani and Chamenda, I greeted them as a normal gesture to my colleagues knowing very well that we are not enemies, neither are we strangers. Chamenda told me that aba bantu baletuchushafye ifi fikapwa and I told them that aya ma politics fye. I had absolutely no idea that the team had actually been summoned by ACC. Not even Sumani disclosed that to me… At no time did I attempt to have the 3 Witnesses not to testify and this is supported by the testimonies of the 3 Witnesses who testified that i did not do that.,” he said.

And Lusambo said the Witnesses that came from MTN and ZICTA came with his phone numbers and not the one provided by Ernest Sumani.

Hon Lusambo also stated that he was shocked that there was a case against him trying to stop another witness Cosmas Chalusa from testifying in his matter.

He said he had never called or met Chalusa to discuss his case.

The Former Kabushi Lawmaker explained the nature of relations he has with Chalusa.

“Mr Chalusa is my business partner. I have been working with Mr Chalusa and he is a colleague even last week, I was talking to him about some transactions we have. To me, he is a brother. And prior to the time when Mr Chalusa was coming to Lusaka, he didn’t even mention to me that he was scheduled to testify…..He was supposed to bring me some Money. He told me that he would be busy and that Brian Chalusa, the Son, would come and meet me. And true to his Word, the son came Home. Mr Chalusa is a business partner and friend and whatever happens, we can’t be separated.

“I never tried to stop him from testifying. Even in his testimony, Mr Chalusa stated that there was nothing like that and at no time have we ever met to discuss Hon Hamaundu’s case,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lusambo has described another witness Mundia Mataa as someone he closely worked with while on the Copperbelt.

He stated that he has had no meeting with Mataa concerning the matter before Hon Faides Hamaundu.

“There was no evidence Your Honour, from the service providers claiming there was a number which Mataa claimed that I had used to call him. I had no meeting with Mataa, and I never called him. I am here to tell this Court the truth only.. He produced a screenshot before this Honourable Court which was showing my Name and Not the number.

“Mundia Mataa, those are the boys we knew in Ndola as I was working as Minister on the Copperbelt and he was working under Ministry of Lands, Survey Department, and I took Mundia as my young brother cause I worked with him the entire 5 years as served as Copperbelt Minister and MP for Kabushi. Mundia did a lot of my Works, he is not a stranger to me. He is a person I closely worked with and I was shocked that he came to this Court to lie that I tried to stop him from testifying,” he said.

Edgar Lungu rallies support for Copper Queens

Lungu rallies support for Copper Queens

WITH only five days to go before the FIFA Women’s World Cup, former president Edgar Lungu has come out to rally support for the in-form Copper Queens who are representing Zambia at the tournament.

The former president says with support, the Copper Queens who are in Group C alongside Japan, Spain and Costa Rica were capable of pulling surprises at the tournament due to start on July 20 and being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Lungu, an avid soccer fan and fitness enthusiast said the Copper Queens had what it took to pull surprises at the tournament.

Citing the recent Copper Queens 3-2 victory over higly-rated Germany in a friendly match as an example, Lungu noted that if Bruce Mwape’s laces could beat the second best team in the world, then they could also be number one.

Lungu said the Copper Queens had made the country proud with their maiden qualification to the World Cup.

“As a country, we are so proud of the Copper Queens and I think they meritoriously achieved their level, and let’s give them support,” Lungu urged.

“I urge Zambia to cheer them all the way through to the end of the tournament, and I know they can make it,” he said adding;
“I think they will pull a lot of surprises…,especially if you watch and support them”.

Lungu made the remarks as at his residence in Ibex Hill, Lusaka this morning during an event at which Footballers and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (FAWUZ) were honoring his contribution to the development of football in Zambia.

Lungu straight away, dedicated the recognition to the Copper Queens.

“I would like to dedicate this award to the Copper Queens as we cheer and wish them success in the tournament.”

Furthermore, Lungu extended his congratulations to the Chipolopolo Boys for beating South Africa to reach the 2023 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup final.

Lungu also noted the unifying power of the sport, emphasizing that football transcends political, religious, and other affiliations, bringing people together.

He commended FAWUZ for its noble objective of championing the welfare of footballers and allied workers in the industry.

URGENT DILEMMA: HAZEL NALI’S INJURY AND THE WORLD CUP RULES – A CALL FOR RESPONSIBLE ACTION

The situation surrounding Hazel Nali’s injury has become a pressing matter, demanding immediate attention and resolution. It is evident that the young girl is injured and urgently requires rehabilitation, making it crucial for her to seek immediate medical attention.

However, the World Cup rules are explicit, permitting only participating and standby players to be present in the camp. This is reminiscent of what happened to Sadio Mane, the team captain, who had to leave the camp after sustaining an injury just a week before the tournament in Qatar.

In contrast, Barbara’s case is different, as she was allowed in the camp due to FAZ appealing her situation with CAF. Crucially, Barbara was not injured but registered as an official, creating a pertinent question of how to handle an injured player like Hazel Nali, visibly limping, and whether she could be considered for registration as an official. Nevertheless, FIFA regulations unequivocally state that injured players are not permitted in the camp under any circumstances.

It is essential to acknowledge that individuals responsible for football administration, who claim to be well-versed in CAF and FIFA rules, should not advocate for the injured player to remain in the camp. Barbara Banda’s case at WAFCON 2022 in Morocco cannot serve as a precedent, as she was not injured and had a valid registration as an official.

Throughout history, injured players have consistently been sent home from tournaments, and this situation should not be subject to political maneuvering. The severity of Hazel Nali’s injury could even jeopardize her career if not treated promptly. Moreover, considering her club contract, handling her injury appropriately becomes even more imperative.

The cases of Nkuku and Benzema, dropped by France with only four days remaining before a major tournament, serve as concrete evidence that injured players are not exempt from the rules. Thus, addressing this situation responsibly and in strict accordance with FIFA regulations is paramount, ensuring the well-being of the player and upholding fair play principles

HK CRITICISED THE DEBT RESTRUCTURING DEAL INSTEAD OF THOSE WHO PUT THE COUNTRY IN THE MESS

HK CRITICISED THE DEBT RESTRUCTURING DEAL INSTEAD OF THOSE WHO PUT THE COUNTRY IN THE MESS…***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

They want the fish to climb the tree while the UPND has put the fish In the water so that it can swim faster . It is very surprising that all of us were in the country when the past regime defaulted , HK was part of the team that was trusted to manage the affairs of this country , the borrowing which did not have any direction and mechanisms to repay the debt , which meant to see the country face artificial challenges among the people , zambians were told it was easy that a company from FRANCE was to be engaged to help zambia negotiate the restructuring of the debt at a cost of $5 million dollars . .

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA while in opposition lamented that he was going to manage to seal the deal on the restructuring of the debt , A lot of people in the ruling party and opposition leaders denied that Mr HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was not capable of restructuring the debt when he formed govt , many Political pundits challenged these lamentations that were personally based ,they went against the statement by president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA suggesting there was no merit but ignorance in the claim by Mr HAKAINDE HICHILEMA . Another matter which president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA said was that he campaigned to employ five thousand workers before the 2021 general election , these same people like HK argued and said Mr HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was desperate to lie to the zambian people , when we elected him ,it was actualised by employing over sixty thousand workers to date.

Today the issue to restructure the debt is a done deal by president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA and his working team , what relevance is HK bringing in the country to criticise the deal which his political friends failed to resolve ?, who are the causers to this mess ? , we understand that we have been given a relief and the creditors have accepted to give us time to reorganise ourselves and prepare to service the $6.3 billion dollars , zambia relies on the mining sector , tourism , and agriculture , the pandemic has had an effect in many sectors , the climate change has contributed heavily to bad weather affecting many areas because of the poor rain pattens , the mines have not been viable , in the past we can talk of the low pricing of copper at the London metal exchange . A lot of factors have let our economy down. and our engagement with the IMF is to have the support we need to achieve these engagements which need international support for the said plan outlay on how zambia intends to move out of the economic cardiac which has been arresting the country to shift to a more positive recovery mode.

We urge HK to concentrate on ochestrating a visionary program that has concepts and skills to govern this country intellectually , with expositions that encourage leadership support for this country , zambians are not interested in ceremonial personalities in the office of the presidency who merely replace the vaccum and ignores the bounds of the responsibilities , we are not going to allow plundering , smuggling , laundering of state resources , corruption , brutality on this country and the citizens . This country should never return to politics of midiocrity and insensible attributes . God bless mother Zambia.

“My Injury Is Not Life Threatening That I Should Leave The World Cup”- Goalkeeper Hazel Nali

0

By Augustine Mukoka
[LONG, LONG READ] EXCLUSIVE: Hazel Nali Speaks Out!

… “My Injury Is Not Life Threatening That I Should Leave The World Cup”

… “In fact The Technical Bench Initially Thought I Was Faking The Injury”

… “Yes! We Protested, As A Team, Over Allowances Before The Ireland Friendly”

Copper Queens first choice goalkeeper Hazel Nali has revealed that her injury is not life threatening to warrant her exclusion from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup describing the announcement that she was heading for treatment and subsequently being excused from the competition as surprising and devastating.

Speaking in an EXCLUSIVE interview with this writer Friday, July 15, 2023, Nali says she was in the dark about circumstances surrounding her injury and the subsequent decision to exclude her from the competition.

The player has since declined to append her signature on a consent form that would be sent to FIFA announcing she was no longer part of the Zambian delegation as no convincing explanation has been availed to her on the injury and treatment process.

Nali, the goalkeeper who scored the winning penalty and saved another in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinal against Senegal to inspire the Copper Queens to a maiden World Cup in Australia and New Zealand by reaching the last four, says she has failed to understand why she has been treated like an alien on the team she has served for 11 years.

Although Nali admits that she is injured, she doubts it is the reason she is being asked to leave the competition.

“The situation is that yeah, I am injured. So, I got injured before the Germany game. I got injured in training and when I got injured, the technical bench didn’t believe that I got injured. They were saying I just faked it.

“When they were saying that, I was in a room with Barbara Banda who called the coach just to confirm everything because he never asked me what the situation was or how I was feeling.

“So I told Barbara, looking at where we have come from. I told her to say, can you call the coach to say what he thinks about me or how he sees things so she called the coach and the coach didn’t know that I was there [in the room].

“So that’s how he explained to say that, ah on Hazel’s situation, all that we are seeing is that she is faking an injury. She doesn’t even have any pain.

“So, I stayed quiet. I didn’t say anything. Then after three or four days, I said okay let me prove a point to everyone that I am really in pain because I am the one feeling it. Then I told the medical team that let me go for training and try, so that’s how I went for training and I got twisted because my knee was weak. We were playing a ka small-sided game then I got twisted again.. That’s how come I didn’t manage to finish that training session,” she narrates.

Nali explains that when she picked the second knock, the medical team appeared to pay a little more attention but there was demand from the goalkeeper coach for an urgent assessment to determine the way forward.

“From there that’s where maybe they believed to say I was really injured. So, the goalkeeper coach gathered me and the medical team to say the team wants to know if this injury is very serious so that we replace you because we are not ready to start nursing injuries at this point.

“So that’s when the medical team told the coach, no… she was injured, when she got injured everyone was there so how is it hard for you people to understand to say that she is injured.

“And that was after the final team was announced. So for them, they were assuming to say that just because the final team has been announced I am…uh faking the injury. So, that’s how that discussion ended. And they said, we will do an MRI for her to see what the problem really is but we didn’t manage to do it from Germany because we were leaving the following day.

“So, then that’s when they said, go with the team then we will have the MRI done as soon as you reach New Zealand. So when we came here [in New Zealand], we had the MRI done but the results weren’t given to the doctor there and then. The [MRI] doctor said he will send them to the [team] doctor. So later in the evening that’s when the doctor came into my room to say the results have been sent.

“And they didn’t show me the results. And I haven’t seen them up to now. So that’s when they started saying one of your ligaments in your knee has been torn so you need to undergo a surgery.

“So I started asking to say if really one of the ligaments in the leg has been torn, how come I am able to walk, I am able to do everything. I am not limping. The only pain I am having is when I bend my knee besides that I am not having any pain,” she explained.

Nali says she did not get convincing answers on the prognosis of her injury.

“So for them they only said ah, we don’t know but that’s the report we have got so you need to go back to Zambia and wait because the surgery has to be done if not from Zambia then India or South Africa. So they told me you need to go to Zambia then after you are in Zambia they will start processing.

“But again in that statement the doctor said when you are in Zambia they will start assessing you again or maybe they’ll need to do other tests. So, I was confused. I didn’t reply to anything at that point.

“So that’s when I sat and I told the captains and some of the players in the team. So everyone was surprised and they were shocked because looking at what the doctors examined and how the situation seems, it seems to be different,” she said.

Nali engaged team captain Barbara Banda to reach out to FAZ officials to clarify the situation.

“So I called Barbara again. I told her, no… you are in the right position to talk to the GS or the TD at FAZ. And ask what really the problem is. So she called again in my presence including some other players, the senior players. She was asking the TD first to say what’s the situation, we are just from reading because I confronted her when it was published to say I have been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup because of the injury.

“So then they said she has an injury but she needs to fly back to Zambia so that she can have some tests done and later on she can fly to do her surgery. So Barbara said, we had an example of me, there was me at the WAFCON, I was there with the team. I didn’t play in any of the games but I sat with the team and I benefited from whatever they got so what is the difference with Hazel and her being here? So they said no, we have already done the arrangement of replacing her and if she has to stay then we need to negotiate with her about the allowances.

“So then she [Barbara] asked again to say but how do you have to negotiate with her because she was already on the list and she is already in the FIFA system? He then said no, I will call you back. That’s when he had to cut [the line],” she added.

Nali said since FAZ technical director Lyson Zulu did not give a satisfactory explanation, the team captain then reached out to FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga.

“And from there Barbara again called the GS. The GS started explaining, no I am not there physically but I am entrusting in the medical team and the medical team are the ones that have given me the information to say she is unable to walk, she is limping so she needs medical attention as soon as possible so that’s why we wrote to say she needs to fly back here and make arrangements on what’s next.

“Then Barbara asked the GS to say, how about the allowances, how is it going to work out because she was already on the list. So for him, he just said ah… that’s not a problem we can handle that. I was there and Barbara said Hazel is here, you can talk to her so I started talking to him. So for him, he only gave me an assurance to say I will give you a call because right now I am busy. I will give you a call when I am done with the meeting. Then I said, oh… okay.

“That was the day before yesterday [Wednesday] in the night. So, from then he didn’t call up to today he hasn’t called me to tell me about anything. So that’s when we sat and Barbara again went to the coaches to find out because from the time I got injured, none of the coaches have come to ask me okay, how are you feeling? Is it really that you can’t do anything? You can’t manage to do anything or maybe are you progressing on the injury? None of them… they took the decision when they were thinking to say I faked an injury. That’s when they decided everything so what followed next after that doesn’t really count because the decision of replacing me and taking me out of the tournament was done earlier even before the tests were conducted,” she said.

Nali says she feels shunned and isolated by the Zambian medical team and technical staff as none has taken keen interest to attend to her injury.

“I have not been attended to by the medical team. I am just walking like this. And from my own side, if really what they are saying is true because I texted the team doctor to say I want to see the results, I want to send them to my agent, but she has not replied.

“What is hurting me is; I have been with the team from 2012 and the technical team knows me and what I can do.

“When I was injured the first time, they could have called me to ask to say, okay, is it really an injury or maybe there is just something behind this. Is what we are thinking right to say maybe you are just faking an injury,” she lamented.

Nali says it is not the first time a member of the Copper Queens remained with the team for a tournament under her prevailing circumstances.

“They never confronted me up to date. They never talked to me about anything. My other concern is, we have had Barbara at the WAFCON, but we stood up for her; we were there for her. We have had Catherine Musonda in 2018, she got injured before the tournament. We had a friendly game against Ivory Coast, we lost 7-0. She got injured before the tournament started and we stayed with her till the tournament ended. And she benefitted from whatsoever was given to us because she was one of us,” she says.

Nali wonders whether the Copper Queens technical staff have taken into consideration her welfare, especially that she sacrificed her job at the club, Fatih Vatan Spor, to attend national team duty, a situation that led to the termination of her contract.

“I mean the technical team, what they are forgetting is that even if they send me today home, where will I start from? Because in the beginning, they made me lose a contract at my club. I was fired because of their poor communication. They didn’t communicate to the team about my traveling when we had friendly games before the official camp for this World Cup – the friendly games that we had in South Korea. They didn’t communicate properly with the team so the team got upset and they had to cut off my contract so as we stand I don’t have any running contract with any team.

“Those are the things also they are forgetting to say if they are to send me back home today maybe because they thought I was faking an injury or maybe I just had my own things, where will I start from? They have announced to the country to say I have been replaced and without talking to me or even coming to me asking how I am feeling.

“I feel I am recovering. The way I was, I was failing to completely bend the knee but now at least I am able to bend my knee. I am only having slight pain. When I am seated, when I am walking I am not having any pain,” she said.

Asked why she was being treated in this manner, Nali says, “with all honesty, I honestly don’t know because that’s the same question I am asking myself up to now.”

However, Nali confirmed allegations the Copper Queens raised issue with their allowances some of which date beyond this period but denied she was the ring leader explaining that as one of the senior players, she felt obliged to query the issue.

“On that part, we had a meeting with the team. And we sat the whole lot of us talking about the allowances because FAZ has been owing us money before the World Cup. They have a lot of our allowances so we talked as senior players and then later on everyone on the team we agreed to say we need to speak out.

“And the only time I spoke, that was when Barbara was speaking. That time she was speaking on behalf of the team and then she was speaking with the GS. When she finished talking to him; the GS himself is the one who asked, ‘is there anyone else that has anything to say?’ That’s when I said, yeah, I have something to say. And the things that I said, I did not talk about anything besides what we were discussing as a team and I said it in front of all my teammates. I did not say it elsewhere or maybe just me claiming for the monies, everyone was there and everyone was agreeing because the GS was on the phone call and it was only one or two people to talk on behalf of the team. And on that program, it was Grace, Barbara and me because Grace and Barbara are the captains and me sometimes I only stand out because of… if you go back in the record of us you’ll find that most of the times I would be pointed to speak on behalf of the team. Maybe if Barbara is not there… remember at the WAFCON I was not the captain but because I have the ability to stand for the team, they would point out to say okay Hazel can you stand to talk to us about this and this. So that’s the only program that was there were money is concerned,” she said

Nali confirmed that the players were given about $500 (about K8,500) after the Ireland match which they nearly boycotted.

“We decided that we are not going to play the friendly game. We protested the very day of the game in the morning. That’s when we spoke and then they told us that no, we are working on that. We know what we are owing you so you will start receiving your monies anytime from now. No, we had that meeting a day before but we stood to say we are not going to play the game if nothing is done so that’s how come on the day of the game they deposited that amount in every account,” she said.

Asked if the team was advised on the actual figures of their outstanding balances, Nali responded, “no they didn’t say it. Even when they deposited that money, they didn’t specify what it was for. They gave it to everyone.”

Nali complained that her injury situation had been blown out of proportion for reasons best known to those doing so.

“I just wanted justice for me because in as much as they might have their own reasons of which I don’t know, they are just telling me its because of the injury that I have been left out or maybe sidelined, but for me again I am refusing to that because I am feeling much better than I was and if I had time like to be with the team, I feel I could have recovered and maybe played games here,” she said.

Last night, Nali was asked to sign a release form in the presence of the delegation leader and the team doctor which was to be transmitted to FIFA to confirm she will no longer be part of the tournament but she declined to do so.

When contacted, both FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga and Technical Director Lyson Zulu’s calls went unanswered.

How Did The Lungus Amass So Much Wealth, Overnight?

Wynter Kabimba, leader of an obscure political party going by the name Economic Front, says Dr. Kenneth Kaunda was probably the only president that managed to “tame” his children to the extent that most of us did not even know them. Aye to that!

Dr. Kenneth Kaunda initially had 8 children. Unfortunately, Masuzyo was one of the earliest casualties of HIV/AIDS as it continued wreaking havoc in the nation early 1980s while Wezi, a rising star in politics, had to meet his fate right outside his gate, thanks to the bullet of an assassin!

Apart from Tilyenji who made a botched attempt at politics, and Panji, our current High Commissioner to Malawi who would go on to serve as deputy minister in the PF regime, nothing much is known about the other Kaunda children. There’s only an inkling of one Kambarage who would inadvertently find himself in the news late 1980s owing to shooting a poor woman in a Lusaka suburb, fatally. He was sentenced to death by hanging although the charges would subsequently be dropped after appealing the case. The courts ruled that the accused pulled the trigger in self-defense at the angry mob hell-bent on lynching him and his companions after besieging their car!

On the other hand, second Republican president Frederick Chiluba had 11 children in total. Although a few of them equally made it in the news for all the wrong reasons; at least it wasn’t on the scale of the crimes of the Mafia which would leave your jaws dropping! Castro, the notorious son of President Chiluba got away with anything from physical assault to trigger-happy! Upon his father ascending to the presidency in 1991, he apparently pulled out a gun and shot a call girl in the leg. His next victim was a man whose girlfriend he was hankering after. The girl wouldn’t ditch her fiance for the president’s son which of course infuriated him and ended up smashing a bottle of beer in his face! Castro often picked up quarrels with folks in the night clubs – and when they tried to argue with them, he’d retort, “I am the son of the president and I can kick your ass if you’re not careful!” One day, he disrupted the flow of traffic on a busy road in the central business district by standing in the middle of the road while screaming for all the world to hear, “I am the 2Pac of Zambia, no one can touch me. I am above the law!”

As if not to be outdone by his younger sibling, Miko equally had his fair share of brush with the law. He was once accused of “taking turns” in having carnal knowledge of a girl with 3 others after a drinking spree! Like Castro, he escaped the dragnet even though the case was reported to the cops and received wide coverage in the media. In a subsequent incident that would leave tongues wagging, Miko would charge at a cop armed with an AK-47. The cop was left with no option but open fire at the floor right in front of him, stopping him dead in his tracks!

As Economic Front leader rightly observes, the only other former president that deserves credit for taming his children is Mwanawasa. Although Mirriam would occasionally rock the boat with matters to do with “dalliance,” at least she and her brother, Patrick never went an extra mile and defrauded the state! While Lorna practically steered away from the limelight, Chipokota and Lubona were probably young at the time to be swayed by the trappings of power.

It was probably during the tenure of Ruphiah Banda that we’d witness almost an entire ‘first family’ entangled in corruption. Banda had 3 children from his previous marriage (Andrew, Henry, Temwani) and 2 twins with his second spouse, Thandiwe.

Rumours always swirled around about Henry this, Henry that when Banda occupied State House. And immediately voters had enough of the affable leader and extracted him from power in favour of the tough-talking and brusque Michael Sata, otherwise popularly known as the King Cobra in the scintillating 2011 elections, investigative wings would descend on the Bandas like flies on a carcass! Although the likes of Andrew would largely remain unscathed by such accusations, Henry would escape into self-imposed exile for fear of prosecution. He would stand accused of multiple charges.

In one instance, he brokered an allegedly corrupt deal in which Kenyan oil trading company Dalbit Petroleum clinched a multimillion-dollar contract to supply finished petroleum products to Zambia in 2009. He was also fingered in a corruption case involving Dora Siliya, the former Minister of Transport & Communications, relating to the controversial appointment of a Cayman Island-registered company to value Zambia’s telecommunication assets. The electrifying tales of looting didn’t end there though. Henry was further embroiled in yet another scandal after being mentioned in court documents as a key figure in an allegedly corrupt oil deal worth $2.5 million with Nigeria’s Sarb Energy Limited. The oil never made it to Zambia!

In the meantime, Rupiah Banda himself was slapped with charges over the vehicles he allegedly procured for his campaign from a Chinese company ahead of the 2011 general elections. He allegedly spent K20 billion on campaign materials, with most of this cash being personally handled by Henry.

In an interviewed with the press, Minister of Justice at the time, Wynter Kabimba, intimated: “We would love to have Henry here, but that won’t stop us from pursuing the case. We have the principal suspect — Rupiah Banda.”

In a matter of time, the Anti-Corruption Commission would soon extend their investigations to Banda’s wife Thandiwe, and place a restriction order on her luxurious apartments on the grounds that they were suspected to be proceeds of crime. The case would drag on for lack of evidence until it was eventually disposed off by the courts of law.

Although the Sata’s children would equally be caught up in a few scandals of their own, it wouldn’t be as hair-raising as compared to his successor! Immediately the King Cobra realised one of his sons was cozying-up to the Chinese; he was quick to pick up telltale signs about his possible involvement in corruption. He didn’t waste time assigning Kabimba who was the trusted Secretary General of his party to ‘counsel’ his first born child, Mulenga as he loathed having a replica of Henry in State House.

While most of his children relatively enjoyed a quiet life, Kazim had to somehow follow in the footsteps of the likes of Castro. According to the Zambian Watchdog, one afternoon Kazim accosted a journalist, Thomas Zgambo, in Lusaka’s Kabwata area, visiously pummeled him with punches while hurling abuse at him.

Fast forward………Edgar Lungu finds himself on the coveted crown, albeit by a sheer stroke of fortune. A matrix of shoddy deals is immediately set in motion involving almost the entire family……..well, going by the various spine-chilling revelations in the media!

According to the News Diggers, the state has seized properties linked to former President Edgar Lungu, his wife Esther and their children, including Tasila Lungu who is PF member of parliament for Chawama. The Director of Public Prosecutions has since applied to court to have all the seized properties forfeited to the State. Among the properties, which are suspected to be proceeds of crime, are 15 double-storey flats in State Lodge belonging to former First Lady Esther Lungu, a farm in Sinda District belonging to Tasila Lungu, one high cost house, three flats and four chicken runs belonging to Chiyeso Lungu among other properties. According to a Drug Enforcement Commission investigation, Esther constructed a 15 double-storey flats and other associated facilities at a whopping cost of K24,256,434.55!

As for president Lungu’s son Daliso Lungu, and his wife, Matildah Milinga, the accusations would even be more glaring! The couple, both directors at Saloid Traders Limited, has been arrested and charged for being in possession of a total of 48 motor vehicles with an estimated value of approximately K23 million. Additionally, the company is accused of owning fixed assets to the tune of K12.8 million, as well as K25 million suspected to be all proceeds of criminal activities. Hamoonga further revealed that Daliso Lungu, as an individual, has also been arrested and charged for being in possession of 21 motor vehicles with a street value of about K1.5 million and fixed assets valued at K31.5 million, all registered under his name! In addition to this, Daliso Lungu has also been arrested and charged with money laundering. The charges stem from the alleged deposit of over K23.9 million into the Saloid Traders Limited account, which is held at ZANACO Cairo Business Centre Lusaka Branch. The transactions are said to have occurred between September 1, 2017, and January 2022 in Lusaka. If there’s any iota of truth in such accusations, the Lungus have definitely broken a record in terms of amassing wealth within the twinkle of an eye as compared to the others! What sort of geniuses are the Lungus to amass so much wealth overnight?

ABOUT THE APPETITE FOR NON-BAILABLE LAWS: A Case Of Lack Of Understanding Of The Concept Of Justice Or Just Retribution?- Sean Tembo

0

ABOUT THE APPETITE FOR NON-BAILABLE LAWS: A CASE OF LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPT OF JUSTICE OR JUST RETRIBUTION?

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. I was not aware that the New Dawn administration had amended the Anti-Terrorism Act and made the offences under it to be non-bailable. If l had become aware of this Bill before it was passed, l would have vigorously campaigned against it because it is retrogressive and is not in tandem with our national values and principles as espoused in the Constitutional Amendment of 2016.

2. When President Hakainde Hichilema abolished the death penalty, l thought that it was based on his belief in justice and fair punishment. But the enactment of a non-bailable law that seeks to punish accused persons with imprisonment even when they have not been convicted of any crime, quickly erased any hopes that l had that the President was a firm believer of justice and fair punishment. It soon became evident that his removal of the death penalty was merely designed to muddy the waters so that he could get away with the enactment of unjust laws.

3. For almost 30 years now ever since the FTJ Chiluba Administration made motor vehicle theft a non-bailable offense to add to the three other non-bailable offenses that existed at the time; being murder, aggravated robbery and treason, this country has not enacted any law that makes an alleged offense non-bailable, until President Hakainde Hichilema and his New Dawn administration introduced the Anti-Terrorism Act in 2023. We all know that the FTJ administration made motor-vehicle theft a non-bailable offense because the President at the time wanted to punish a particular individual called McTribouy because of an alleged social dispute that the President had with the individual, but it is surprising that this law has remained on our statute books up to this day.

4. The Constitution of Zambia, which is the supreme law of the land clearly says that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, after being afforded a right to defend themselves. This means that before a person is convicted, they have not committed any crime. The same Constitution further says that a punishment must fit the crime, but since an accused person who has not been convicted has not committed any crime, it follows that they must not be punished until such a time that they are convicted, if at all.

5. The enactment of laws that seek to punish accused persons before they are convicted, under the banner of “non-bailable” offenses, not only flies in the teeth of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, but is a blatant violation of the Constitution of Zambia. If we are going to comply with the Constitution, then all crimes should be bailable. The right to bail should be left to the discretion of Judicial Officers who must weigh the individual circumstances of a case and determine the likelihood of an accused person to avail themselves before Court when required to do so. The right to bail for any offense must not be unconstitutionally taken away by the legislature.

6. I have no doubt in my mind that a President who believes in justice and fair punishment is supposed to be advocating for the removal of all non-bailable laws instead of introducing new ones. In fact, l was alarmed when l heard President Hakainde Hichilema a few weeks ago saying that he intends to make stock theft a non-bailable offense. To me, this is evidence of the President’s lack of understanding of the tenets of justice and fair punishment. As a leader, you are supposed to feel hurt when an innocent citizen is punished, the way Hon. Mumbi Phiri was incarcerated for more than a year, only for the State to withdraw the charges a day before judgement day. If as a President, you are okay with depriving bail from innocent citizens who end up being incarcerated for years before a Court exonerates them, then it speaks volumes about your true character. You are most likely a sadist.

7. If l was President of Zambia, l would advocate for Parliament to make all offenses bailable so that the onus to give or deny bail is left in the hands of individual Judicial Officers. I would also compensate any citizen who was incarcerated on a non-bailable offense and was not convicted of the offense, such as Hon. Mumbi Phiri. It is not necessary to wait for such individuals to sue the State. There is a fine line between justice and retribution. A President who is willing to incarcerate citizens regardless of whether they are guilty or innocent is practicing retribution. A President who is only willing to punish guilty citizens is practicing justice.

8. I have no doubt in my mind that President Hakainde Hichilema and his New Dawn administration enacted the Anti-Terrorism Act specifically to harass the opposition in general and the former ruling Patriotic Front party in particular. When you look at Section 2 of the so-called Anti-Terrorism and Non-Proliferation (Amendment) Act No. 6 of 2023, you will note that terrorism has been given an extremely wide definition. Even two people fighting in the streets can easily be charged with terrorism instead of assault. If you have an axe or machete in your house, you can easily be charged with possession of articles of terrorism and can be incarcerated without bail like Dr. Christopher Zumani Zimba.

9. In fact, when you look at the case of President Lungu’s former Political Advisor who is currently held without bail for a possession of articles of terrorism charge under Section 25 of the Act, you will note that the halothane chemical that him and his colleagues are alleged to have been in possession of has hundreds of commercial and industrial applications and is not a restricted chemical. That means Police can come and search your property and find fertilizer and charge you with possession of articles of terrorism under Section 25, since fertilizer can be used to make a bomb. The bottom line here is that the wording of the so-called Anti-Terrorism and Non-Proliferation (Amendment) Act No.6 of 2023 is too frivolous and subjective to be used as a basis for holding citizens without bail. This law is not only unconstitutional but is a direct threat to Zambia’s democracy, and must be challenged in the Constitutional Court at the earliest opportunity.

10. It is also evident that President Hakainde Hichilema lacks a sense of justice and fair punishment. Instead of improving the efficiency of Zambia’s criminal justice system, especially at Subordinate Court level, so that cases can be disposed of on a timely basis, the President is instead on a drive to make as many alleged offenses non-bailable as possible. It would be interesting to get the President’s reasoning on how he believes justice would be served by incarcerating a person who has not been convicted of any offense. The fact that the President is now advocating for stock theft to be made non-bailable means that he has a high appetite for extra-judicial punishment. He does not believe that a person can be wrongly accused. He believes that if the Police arrest someone, then the person is definitely guilty. He sees the court system as a waste of time. He believes that accused persons should be taken straight to prison, locked up and the keys thrown away. This should be a source of worry to all well-meaning citizens. Only blind praise singers like the British High Commissioner to Zambia; the Despicable Nicholas Wooley can support this ongoing nonsense.

CDF IS NOW BEING USED AS A VEHICLE FOR CORRUPTION-MUNDUBILE

CDF IS NOW BEING USED AS A VEHICLE FOR CORRUPTION-MUNDUBILE
…….says that is why the Auditor General had to be sacrificed to facilitate for the illegalities under CDF.

Lusaka – Friday, July 14th , 2023. [Smart Eagles]

Leader of Opposition Brian Mundubile has alleged that the Constituency Development Fund is now being used as a Vehicle for Corruption and must be condemned.

Hon Mundubile said the concept of increasing CDF from K1.6 million to K28.3 million was good until alleged corruption took centre stage.

He was speaking when Patriotic Front Members of Parliament held a press Briefing in Lusaka today.

Hon Mundubile said the country is dealing with a government that has collapsed all procurement procedures.

He said cadres are being rewarded using CDF Projects ignoring the processes adding that Permanent secretaries are the ones approving projects.

He said that is the reason they had to frustrate former Auditor General Dr Dick Sichembe because of corruption under CDF and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Leader of Opposition stated that The UPND has put in a new system to siphon money through CDF.

He also said that no wonder it is not surprising that the Ministers are moving to provincial capitals to promote and commission projects.

“They are rewarding their cadres using CDF projects, if you look at the procurements, PS are sitting in provincial capitals, they call and direct who should be given the projects. The procurement process is simply ignored. The Corruption under the New Dawn Government through the administrative procedures is through CDF. That is why they are trying to excite everyone into believing that the CDF is a successful initiative.

The concept was good, but go through CDF projects, there are no tender processes, names are just chosen. We are dealing with a government that has collapsed all procurement procedures.

Which auditor General is going to have the courage to give a report of UPND Cadres in the report. They push a lot of money in that direction (CDF) and ignore all the procurement processes. They submit names. The UPND SG is going through CDF projects to facilitate the corruption of awarding contracts,” he said.

What Politics Is M’membe Playing To The Gallery By Defending Former PF Govt Officials To Suggest They Only Stole Petty Cash

WHAT POLITICS IS M’MEMBE PLAYING TO THE GALLERY BY DEFEND FORMER PF GOVT OFFICIALS TO SUGGEST THEY ONLY STOLE PETTY CASH…***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

It is important that M’MEMBE became responsible for once and minded his political stand with maturity away from the sterio type of leadership he is trying to portray in his Political party . His chronic hate for the UPND leadership having succeeded to win an election should not be reasoned to accept M’MEMBE’S hypocrisy and otherwise .

The statement regarding the stealing by PF members to that of just accessing petty cash should remind us many things , some politicians think zambians are too passive . We are thought to forget easily . How can we forget mainly the things which made us change govt this past election , zambians witnessed how MUKULA logs were being smuggled and transported at ordinary hours like 01:00 hours escorted by security wings ordered by constitutional powers .

One person a liquidator bought properties worth $750 million dollars , houses worth ZMK 18 million , a storey of flats $ 15 million dollars , ZMK 24 million worth properties , siezed 150 trucks , These issues involve only four PF members and that is not all they have .if M’MEMBE loves this country why is he still defending PF members who destroyed this country before. Let’s find out from M’MEMBE whether the state of the nation in which the PF regime left this country pleases him more because he is bitter that UPND is in power today .

M’MEMBE recalls that 42 fire tenders were bought at $ 1million dollars each , medical ambulances at $188,000 dollars each when a good offer was given at $74 ,000 dollars, M’MEMBE should weigh in and measure the debt and the meagre expenditure on projects that were commissioned under the tyrans.

The properties of the POST COMPANY were not advertised as per proceedure after a CRIMINALISED liquidation , the properties were simply looted by PF members , and today M’MEMBE says the country was not plundered and looted , M’MEMBE should be politically reasonable ,

This country is not going to listen to these statements that indirectly support cartels that want to hoodwink zambians , I’ve just highlighted proceeds of crimes by just giving out the worthless of individuals and those stinking deals by govt using privately owned companies to facilitate the stealing transactions .M’MEMBE should be very truthful for this country , if he wants to defend PF political pundits , it should not be around the periferals of plunder by the PF regime . Zambians will not hate the UPND govt the way he does because he is dinning with them . God bless mother Zambia .

19 YEAR OLD PUPIL SHOT DEAD WHILE IN POLICE CUSTODY

A Police Officer in Masaiti District has shot dead a 19 year old pupil who was in Police custody at Edgar Chagwa Lungu community Police post.

Kennedy Chibuye 37 of Kafulafuta Police Camp shot Ronald Chishimba, a grade nine pupil under GCE of Mushili Primary School using an AK-47 firearm.

Disclosing the incident to ZANIS in Masaiti, Copperbelt Province Police Commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba says the incident happened on Tuesday evening July 11, 2023 around 20:00 hours.

Mr. Mweemba says according to reports received, the deceased allegedly tried to escape from lawful custody when he was shot.

He stated that the Police Officer has since been arrested and in Police custody while the body of the deceased has been deposited to Ndola Teaching Hospital awaiting postmortem.

Meanwhile, Lyson Chishiba, father to the deceased, has expressed sadness at the premature death of his son.

Mr. Chishiba said the death of his son Ronald could have been avoided if the police officers on duty were not drunk.

“It is really hard to understand how my son whilst in the police cell managed to break into the ceiling board to escape from custody as alleged by the Police at the station where he was shot,” Mr. Chishiba said

Mr. Chishiba noted that the family is grieved at the loss of their child and hopes that justice prevails.

He said the community in Mukolwe area are now living in fear that the Police they thought would protect them have resorted to shooting them.

Masaiti District Commissioner Ennie Matutu expressed sadness at the development.

She said the shooting incident by the officer was uncalled, adding that the deceased was not armed.

Ms. Matutu has, however, condemned the acts of vandalism that occurred at the Police post by the community during the night of the incident.

She urged the community not to take the law in their own hands when aggrieved.

Ronald Chishiba will today be put to rest after a postmortem in Masaiti District.

K4 MILLION MANYANYA ROBBERY SUSPECTS IN COURT.

Two suspects in the Manyanya robbery incident that occurred in May of this year have appeared in court.

Solomon Sibomana, 37, a Congolese National and a resident of Garden House in Lusaka, and Franky Manginza also aged 37 of Chawama Compound in Lusaka appeared in court on Friday morning for an explanation of the charges of murder, Attempted murder, and aggravated robbery.

Nakonden Resident Magistrate Alice Walusiku has since adjourned the matter to July 28, 2023, for mention as the court awaits instructions from the Director of public prosecution.

On May 17, 2023, a Tanzanian businessman of Mwaka area was robbed of K4 Million cash at the Manyanya complex on the Zambian side.

He was in the company of a taxi driver, Wiseman Elias, and was taking the money for banking to ABSA bank on the Zambian side.

During the attack, the robbers shot at a customer Benjamin Silungwe who sustained a gunshot wound on the stomach and later died while in admission at Chinsali General Hospital, and Ireen Asubisya who was shot in the lower abdomen and fortunately survived.

A month and some two weeks later, the duo was arrested by a joint team of officers from Nakonde police and the Ati-Robbery Squad of Lusaka.

Before now, the police did not issue any official statement.

On June 29, 2023, a sum of K20,000 cash, a star pistol, a Toyota Isis with registration number BLB 8432, a Samsung digital camera, and a Dell laptop were recovered in Lusaka.

Further investigations led the team to Eastern Province where K80,000 cash was recovered bringing the total money to K169,300.

The investigations led to the apprehension of the two suspects.

The duo will have to be trialed by a higher court.

In 2021, a similar incident was witnessed on the same spot when workers for the Manyanya group of companies were attacked on their way to cash in money at the bank.

The lead suspect Jason Simbeye was arrested within 24 hours and was last year slapped with a death sentence by the Chinsali High Court.

SICHONE CREDITS PLAYERS FOR HARD FIGHT AGAINST BAFANA BAFANA

Chipolopolo assistant coach Moses Sichone reserved some charitable words for his players in the aftermath of his team’s hard fought for 2-1 victory over perennial rivals South Africa at the ongoing Holywoodbets Cosafa Cup 2023.

Sichone, who tore into his players after they allowed two late goals in a 4-2 win against Seychelles to almost put their campaign in jeopardy was a softer man after Zambia qualified a consecutive Cosafa Cup final.

The Chipolopolo have put themselves in good stead to fight for a record seventh title ahead of the back-in-football warriors of Zimbabwe.

“A big compliment to the team, they have done well today after all the analysis we did, we saw South Africa, saw their strongest points and their weaknesses. We expect another tough match against Lesotho because Lesotho is one of the experienced teams. They have been playing for so many years together, we know that the game won’t be easy,” Sichone said.

He revealed that the halftime pep talk helped turnaround a 1-0 deficit at the break to a 2-1 victory.
“I went in the dressing room and encouraged the boys not to look down but pick themselves up. After that the team came back strong and we managed to equalize and scored the second goal,” he said.

Sichone pleaded to the fans to believe more in the team as they carry on their mission beyond the Cosafa.
“I know most of the fans, more especially back home, they did not believe in these guys but these are some of the things we know in football. For me the most important thing is the players, if they are able to make the fans happy then they have done their job,” he said.
“They are aware that when they are putting on the jersey, they are not representing themselves, they are representing the whole mother Zambia.”

And his opposite number Morena Ramoreboli said the semifinal was a cagey affair that was always going to be won on mistakes.
“We the same mistake we were doing in the final third in our defence to concede the first goal and exposing the space in front of the centre backs,” he said.
“The way the game was, it was so tight that whoever made mistakes will end up losing the match. it is just unfortunate that today it was us who made those mistakes.”

Zambia will face off with Lesotho on Sunday in the final of the Cosafa Cup at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.
The Chipolopolo are tied on six title with Zimbabwe and could steer clear of the warriors with victory over the Likuena on Sunday.

Sweden permits demonstrators to burn Torahs and Bibles in front of Israeli Embassy

0

The Swedish national radio channel announced on Friday that the demonstration, which involves the burning of Torahs and Bibles outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm, had received approval from the government of Sweden.

According to Sveriges Radio, a request to arrange a public meeting to burn the holy books on Saturday has been approved.

In a press release on Friday, the European Jewish Congress (EJC) stated that they “strongly” denounced the Swedish government‘s decision.

“Provocative, racist, antisemitic and sickening acts such as these have no place in any civilised society,” EJC president Ariel Muzicant said in the statement.

“Stamping on the deepest religious and cultural sensibilities of people is the clearest expression possible to send a message that minorities are unwelcome and unrespected,” Muzicant added.

“These actions, based on contorted and specious free speech arguments, are a disgrace to Sweden and any democratic government worthy of the name should prevent it.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the Swedish authorities’ decision.

“I unequivocally condemn the permission granted in Sweden to burn holy books. As the President of Israel, I condemned the burning of the Quran, sacred to Muslims world over, and I am now heartbroken that the same fate awaits a Jewish Bible, the eternal book of the Jewish people,” Herzog tweeted.

At the end of June, a man burned a copy of Islam’s holy book outside a mosque in the Swedish capital, triggering violent protests at the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

The decision to permit that protest was made in accordance with the right of freedom of speech, Swedish police said at the time.

A police permit obtained by CNN last month stated that the “security risks and consequences connected to a Quran burning are not of such a nature that, according to current law, they can be the basis for a decision to reject an application for a general meeting.”

The permit for the June demonstration said that Quran burnings “mean an increased risk of a terrorist attack” and “can also have foreign policy consequences.”

However, it added that for “security problems to be the basis for a decision to refuse a general assembly, these must have a clear connection to the planned gathering or its immediate surroundings.”

UN ‘very concerned’ over rampant police brutality during Kenyan protests – UN official

0

After clashes over tax increases reportedly turned deadly, the United Nations stated that it was “very concerned” about the widespread use of violence by Kenyan police against demonstrators.

On Wednesday, protests broke out all around the nation, including in the nation’s capital, Nairobi, where Opiyo Wandayi, the head of the opposition in Kenya’s parliament, told CNN that police had to use force to disperse the crowds.

In a news statement on Friday, Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, stated that “reports say up to 23 people have been killed and dozens have been injured in the demonstrations in the past week.”

Laurence called for “prompt, thorough, independent and transparent investigations into the deaths and injuries. Those responsible must be held to account. Effective measures to prevent further deaths and injuries must be adopted.”

“In light of calls for further protests next week, we call on the authorities to ensure the right to peaceful assembly as guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution and international human rights law.

The policing of protests must seek to facilitate peaceful assemblies, and any use of force must be guided by the principles of legality, necessity, proportionality and non-discrimination. Firearms should never be used to disperse protests,” Laurence said.

Laurence also appealed “for calm and encourage open dialogue to address social, economic and political grievances, with the aim of identifying lasting solutions in the interests of all Kenyans.”

Demonstrations have flared in Kenya over a raft of unpopular tax hikes proposed by the national government.

Kenyan opposition leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga has led calls for protests over the increases.

Odinga lost the election in August last year and believes the results were manipulated and has since led civil disobedience protests against his political rival.

A Kenyan court temporarily halted the implementation of the Finance Act 2023 touted by President William Ruto as a measure to shore up public finances and increase domestic revenue.

However, the Ruto administration defied the court order and increased tax on fuel prices, which has led to a rise in cost of transport and staple goods.

TAZARA, A SYMBOL OF WARM RELATIONS WITH CHINA – NANJUWA

Authorities in Central province have described the Tanzania Zambia Railways (TAZARA) as Zambia’s flagship to long standing warm relationship with China which has provided direct benefits to people in the region.

Central province Minister Credo Nanjuwa says TAZARA has not only provided jobs for local people but provides the most reliable route the indian ocean as well as logistical support for much of the farming community in the processing of their produce.

Speaking during the Commemoration to mark 47 years of TAZARA in Kapiri today, Mr Nanjuwa further said the province boasts of a huge chinese investment presence in especially mining, agriculture and agro processing as well as manufacturing.

He said other than hosting the TAZARA which is a symbol of relationship between China and Zambia, the Central province further hosts the JIANGXI MULTI FACILITY ECONOMIC ZONE which is expected to be a significant contributor to local gross domestic product through local job opportunities.

He said the Chinese Government has demonstrated commitment to strengthen the friendship with Zambia in many aspects and the province was proud to be associated with Chinese investment.

The Provincial Minister further requested the Chinese Embassy in Zambia through its Ambassador Du Xiaohui help in actualising mutual partnerships and twinning with JIANGXI province of China following the failings of a similar MoU signed between Central Province and Henan province of China in 2019 as a way of promoting mutual understanding and development.

Mr Nanjuwa further added that his province was embarking on a robust programme aimed at promoting and attracting investment to enhance job creation as well as market linkages and technological transfer between local and large scale investors as envisaged in the country’s 8th National Development Plan.

And Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Du Xiaohui said it is the duty of the current generation to transform the TAZARA to a road towards development, prosperity and green transformation.

Ambassador Du Xiaohui said China will this year work at setting up the Zambia -Tanzania- China working group aimed revitalising the TAZARA railway line into a modern mode of transport and increase its capacity to match with regional needs.

The 47th anniversary Commemorations which ended with a train ride between Kapiri and Luanshimba railway siding was attended by several Chinese and Zambian government officials.

Kosovo’s president denounces fight that broke out in parliament

0

As reported by CNN station N1, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani denounced the altercation that broke out between lawmakers from the opposition and the ruling party on Thursday in the legislature.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti was interrupted by opposition lawmakers during a live video feed of the Kosovan parliament, and water was thrown at him after some pushing and fighting between members of the opposition and the ruling Vetevendosje party.

Kurti was talking about calming down tensions in northern Kosovo, which had been the scene of deadly riots in May when ethnic Serbs objected to the appointment of ethnic Albanian mayors.

There was a scuffle among the MPs who came to Kurti’s defense and those who came to the other side.

Glass was also heard breaking and the President of the Kosovo Assembly, Gljauk Konjufca, was also heard calling the police in the video.

The live broadcast from this session was then interrupted.

Osmani said in a Facebook such violence had “no place.”

“Using physical violence as a tool to address political discontent, differences or disagreements is the greatest harm that can be done to institutions that were built with so much can sacrifice,” she wrote, adding that “violence has no place in the temple of democracy and cannot become a political tool.”

“We must reaffirm our commitment to democracy, different thinking, as well as mutual respect, based on rule and law-abiding,” she said.

Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama also condemned the brawl.

“Imagine how the irreplaceable allies and friends of Kosovo and the Albanians feel, when they see how Albanians grabbed each other by the throat instead of fighting with ideas and words, not insults and fists,” he said and called the opposition to distance itself from what he said was shameful behavior.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, nearly a decade after a war in which Kosovan Albanians attempted to break from what was then the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, made up of today’s Serbia and Montenegro. Serbia views Kosovo as a breakaway state and does not recognize its independence.

The bulk of Kosovo’s population is ethnically Albanian but in the restive north ethnic Serbs are the majority in some areas and have increasingly demanded greater autonomy.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. thrills crowd in Zimbabwe during ‘Motherland Tour’

It’s not really a place where you’d expect to come across the richest boxer of all time.

An event held on a dusty soccer field in Mabvuku, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest Black townships, saw a crowd enjoying free entertainment on Thursday thanks to a visit by boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is on what he calls the “Motherland Tour.”

Hundreds chanted “Mayweather mbinga … mbinga!” (Mayweather … the rich guy!) as the 46-year-old, who won world titles in five divisions with a 50-0 career record, hit a punching bag and performed other drills.

Earlier, after emerging from his private plane, Mayweather briefly addressed local reporters and made clear his delight at being in Africa.

“I’m back home!” he screamed. “I’m back where I belong, I’m truly back home!”

At Mabvuku, on the outskirts of the capital Harare, fans were treated to live music and exhibition bouts by local boxers, young and old.

Mayweather made his appearance four hours after the crowd had gathered.

People sang and danced while watching proceedings which were on a big screen. The cheers grew louder when a smiling Mayweather, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last year, went on stage for a 15-minute drill.

Mayweather’s visit came after a previous meeting with Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya, a gold dealer who is vying for a parliamentary seat in Mabvuku as a candidate for the ruling ZANU-PF party, which isn’t popular in urban areas of the country. Two years ago after bumping into Mayweather in Dubai, Sakupwanya told Zimbabweans that he would bring the American fighter to Zimbabwe.

“It shows that everything else I’ve promised you, I’ll fulfill,” he told the crowd.

Organizers have previously announced that Mayweather — who they said will help to build schools and hospitals in the area — will also visit South Africa during his tour.

Mayweather also met with Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Harare.

Alfonso Zvenyika, a former Commonwealth boxing champion, was part of the special day in Mabvuku.

“At my peak, I thought boxing would bring me to where Mayweather is now, where I didn’t have to worry about my next meal, or school fees for my children,” Zvenyika told The Associated Press.

“But it didn’t go according to plan. Today, I can only be a curtain-raiser for Floyd. I’m not jealous of him, he is a great fighter. I’m only honored to be fighting in the same ring that he is showcasing his skills, just honored to be invited here for Floyd’s visit to our country. I’m part of history.”

Putin ally’s daughter discovered dead in flat

0

The beautiful Russian daughter of a Putin ally was discovered dead in her flat after apparently complaining of feeling ill.

The concierge of Natalia Bochkareva’s building in Moscow’s Presnensky District sounded the alarm, leading to her discovery.

Before discovering her dead on Tuesday, police officers pounded on the door.

The 44-year-old had complained of feeling ill the day before, according to the concierge.

According to preliminary reports, there were no signs of a violent death.

Her death is the latest in a long line of high-profile Russian figures to suddenly die in mysterious circumstances.

Ms Bochkareva was the daughter of the late Vasily Bochkarev, who governed Penza Oblast from 1998 to 2015.

A year after leaving office, the 67-year-old, who belonged to Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, died from lung cancer.

Ms Bochkareva managed the family’s lumber-processing and bakery businesses after her father’s death.

Two years ago she hit headlines for falling for scam. It’s reported she sent a self-styled fortune teller 16 million rubles (£136,000) to remove a curse.

But after receiving the money, the fortune teller broke off all contact with Natalia and, according to Ms Bochkareva, failed to fulfil her part of the agreement.

The police ended up getting involved.

According to some reports, Natalia suffered from heart problems.

Other recent deaths of Russia’s elite include that of 28-year-old Kristina Baikova in June.

Ms Baikova, a vice-president at Loko-Bank, allegedly fell from her 11th floor apartment in Moscow.

In February Russian defence official Marina Yankina, 58, also fell from an apartment window and died.

As head of the financial support department of the Ministry of Defence, Ms Yankina was a key figure in the funding of the war.

Her death was reported as a suspected suicide – although this is common in Russia before any investigation is carried out or when facts are unclear.

In May meanwhile, Russia’s deputy science minister, Pyotr Kucherenko, thought to be a critic of the war, died suddenly after falling ill on a flight back to Moscow after a work trip in Cuba, the Mail Online reports.

In April, Igor Shkurko, the deputy general director of Russian energy company Yakutskenergo, was found dead in his prison cell

The 49-year-old was a member of the pro-Putin United Russia political party but his membership was suspended following the bribe accusation.

Two months earlier, Russian oil boss Viatcheslav Rovneiko, 59, was ‘found unconscious’ late at night at his home.

Doctors were unable to save him, a report in Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper claimed.

On December 26, Pavel Antonov – a wealthy sausage tycoon, local politician and a Putin critic – died in India after falling out of a hotel window.

His friend Vladimir Bidenov was found dead in the same hotel four days earlier.

Top Russian officer dismissed for ‘telling Kremlin truth about war in Ukraine’

0

A senior Russian general claims that his removal from office was due to his disclosure of the truth about the front lines in Ukraine.

The 58th Army, which has been engaged in combat in southern Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, was led by Major General Ivan Popov.

He informed military leaders by voicemail of the high incidence of casualties and dearth of military assistance.

It’s unknown when the voice message was recorded, but it was posted to telegram by Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulyov.

Gurulyov is a former military commander and frequent commentator on state TV.

‘It was necessary either to keep quiet and be a coward or to say it the way it is,’ Popov said.

‘I had no right to lie in the name of you, in the name of my fallen comrades in arms, so I outlined all the problems which exist.’

He also highlighted issues like lack of proper counter battery systems to help repel Ukrainian artillery attacks and lack of military intelligence.

Popov said his dismissal was demanded by senior commanders – who he accused of treason – and approved by the Russian defence minister, Sergei Shoigu.

Russian bloggers reported that the order to dismiss Popov came from the head of Russia’s armed forces, General Valery Gerasimov.

They said General Gerasimov accused Popov of ‘alarmism and blackmailing senior management’ after he highlighted the need to rotate soldiers who had been in the front line for a sustained period of time and had suffered significant losses.

‘The senior chiefs apparently sensed some kind of danger from me and quickly concocted an order from the defence minister in just one day and got rid of me,’ Popov said.

‘The Ukrainian army could not break through our ranks at the front but our senior chief hit us from the rear, viciously beheading the army at the most difficult and intense moment.’

The Russian defence ministry has not yet commented on the dismissal.

In a sign that many in Russia share Popov’s criticism, Andrei Turchak, the first deputy speaker of the upper house of parliament who heads the main Kremlin party United Russia, strongly backed the general.

The news comes a day after General Oleg Tsokov, was killed by a Ukrainian missile strike.

Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin political analyst, noted Popov’s statement echoed criticism of the top brass by Prigozhin.

However, he added Popov’s statement was not a rebellion, but instead a call for Vladimir Putin’s help.

‘Such public disputes at the top of the Russian army isn’t a show of force,’ he said.

Speaking in Helsinki on Thursday after a Nato summit, Joe Biden said he is not certain about what fate awaits Prigozhin.

‘I’m not even sure where he is,’ Mr Biden said. ‘If I were he, I’d be careful what I ate, I’d be keeping an eye on my menu. But all kidding aside … I don’t know. I don’t think any of us know for certain what the future of Prigozhin is in Russia.’

Alebwelelapo: Chilufya Tayali’s Latest Political Agenda

Alebwelelapo: Chilufya Tayali’s Latest Political Agenda

By Dr Mwelwa

In the world of Zambian politics, there is a beat that’s getting louder by the day. It’s called the “Alebwelelapo beat,” and it seems to be a rallying cry for those who believe that President Lungu should return to active politics. One person who has recently joined this chorus is none other than Chilufya Tayali, who has decided to ditch the Mundubile Campaign and support the call for President Lungu’s return.

Now, as a student of President Lungu’s Political Engineering, I can’t help but wonder if his silence on the matter was intentional or just an oversight. Did he purposely leave us all guessing about his retirement from active politics, or was it simply an omission on his part? Well, that’s a question that the Central Committee of his party seems to have failed to answer. The pressure from the PF mosquito (whatever that means) seems to have forced their hand in announcing the dates for the convention and constitutional conference. It’s as if they wanted to prove the naysayers wrong, including the likes of Antonio Mwanza and the elusive PF mosquito.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. We need to focus on the timeline for the Political Party Constitutional Conference, which is set for July 29th, 2023. According to my extensive research (and a healthy dose of imagination), here’s how the preparation should ideally play out:

First, about 6 to 12 months before the conference, the party needs to establish the need for the conference and start internal discussions. They should also appoint an organizing committee and review the current party constitution for areas that need improvement. Seeking legal advice is also a must to ensure everything complies with the law.

Next, about 3 to 6 months before the conference, they should draft a clear agenda, develop proposed amendments, and seek input from party members. They should also finalize the date and venue, and start promoting the conference internally. It’s important to keep the party members in the loop and get them excited about the event.

Then, about 1 to 3 months before the conference, they should share the finalized agenda with the participants and develop discussion materials. They should also establish mechanisms for party members to submit proposals and confirm the attendance of key speakers. Pre-conference briefings or workshops might also be beneficial.

About 2 to 4 weeks before the conference, all invitations and materials should be sent out. The venue and logistical arrangements should be finalized, and all necessary documentation should be prepared. It’s crunch time!

Finally, about 1 week before the conference, a final review of all materials should be conducted, technical equipment should be checked, and last-minute updates should be communicated. The organizing committee members should know their roles, and a final walk-through of the venue should take place.

And now, the big day arrives! The conference should kick off with an introductory session, followed by fruitful discussions on each agenda item. Voting should be conducted, and transparency should be maintained throughout. Key points and decisions should be documented for future reference. And, of course, the conference should wrap up by summarizing the outcomes, next steps, and action items.

Of course, this is just a tentative plan, and in reality, things might not always go as smoothly as we hope. But the point is, proper planning, communication, and coordination are crucial for a successful event.

But let’s get back to the matter at hand – the “Alebwelelapo beat.” Chilufya Tayali seems to have taken a u-turn on the Mundubile Campaign and is now openly advocating for President Lungu’s return. And why not? During the PF rule, every project seemed to be fully funded. Musicians, pastors, civil society organizations – they all got paid. And let’s not forget, President Lungu himself is a wealthy man capable of paying for anything. So, if this project is fully funded, it’s not surprising that Tayali would change his tune.

In fact, he has even advised President Lungu to stop jogging and start campaigning. Now, that’s quite a shift in priorities, don’t you think? But hey, in the world of politics, anything can happen.

All in all, the “Alebwelelapo beat” is growing louder, and it seems like President Lungu’s retirement from active politics may not be set in stone after all. Whether it was by design or just an oversight, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure – the political landscape in Zambia is about to get even more interesting. So buckle up, my friends, because it’s going to be one wild and unpredictable ride. Let’s see how this all plays out!

HH SHOULD DECLARE HIS ASSETS – MUSUMALI

HH SHOULD DECLARE HIS ASSETS – MUSUMALI

….says Zambians should know the President’s true worth before and after leaving Office

Kitwe, Friday, July 14, 2023 ( Daily Nation Zambia )

THE UPND is the most corrupt party and its fight against corruption must start within itself with President Hakainde Hichilema declaring his assets so that Zambians can know how much he was worth before he was elected Republican President, Socialist Party General Secretary Cosmas Musumali has said.

Dr. Musumali said President Hichilema has deliberately refused to declare his assets so that Zambia will not be able to know how much he was worth when he became Republican President and how much he will acquire after leaving the office.

Dr. Musumali said during at press briefing in Kitwe that the UPND was not only a corrupt party, but was also a violent party which has failed to set the stage for poverty alleviation and hunger.

He said the UPND which used to label the Patriotic Front (PF) to be a corrupt party, has turned out to be the most corrupt party which was making policies that aimed supporting the individual businesses of the party leadership.

“The UPND used to label the PF to be a corrupt party, but it has turned to be the most corrupt party. The fight against corruption must start within the UPND itself before looking at opposition parties and individuals. The fight against corruption must start with President Hichilema declaring his assets.

“It is sad that President Hichilema has been silent on issues of corruption in fertiliser and others. When you are Republican President, you remain silent when there are corruption scandals, then people will conclude you are part of it,” Dr. Musumali said.

When reminded about the firing of Luapula Province Minister Derrick Chilundika over the alleged Sugilite scandal, Dr. Musumali said the opposition was not excited about Mr Chilundika’s dismissal because it was mere sugar coating and not a genuine fight against corruption.

And Dr. Musumali said Mr Chilundika was implicated in the Sugilite scandal from the beginning and it had even taken long for him to be fired now, adding that there are many corruption scandals which President Hichilema should have taken action on.

“The Chilundika issue is nothing to be excited about. From the beginning, Mr Chilundika was implicated in the Sugilite scandal. Those boys said he is one of us. So his dismissal is nothing to be excited about to say now Mr Hichilema is fighting corruption. No,” he said.

Dr. Musumali also said Zambians had learnt a bitter lesson of replacing the former Republican President Edgar Lungu with President Hichilema whose capitalist policies had resulted into worsening poverty and hunger levels in communities.

He said replacing the PF with the UPND was the worst mistake Zambians had made because it will not only plunge the nation into the hunger and poverty, but will also hand over the country into the hands of imperialists.

“Zambians have seen the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities with mealie meal prices fetching almost K300 per 25 kilogramme bag of mealie meal. I can tell you that Zambians made the worst mistake of replacing the PF with the UPND.

“Zambians are going through untold misery. I can tell you that that there is serious poverty and hunger in townships. It is sad that instead of laying a firm foundation for poverty alleviation and food security, the New Dawn administration is using law enforcement agencies like the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and others to intimidate its critics,” he said.

ZAMBIA IS CRUCIAL IN GLOBAL GEOPOLITICS- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

ZAMBIA IS CRUCIAL IN GLOBAL GEOPOLITICS

…says Amb. Anthony Mukwita

From KBNtv-14.07.23

Zambia must take advantage of its massive mineral wealth to be a crucial player in the global geopolitical economy sphere says Ambassador Anthony Mukwita.

“As the wealthy west and China thirst for dumping fossil fuel in preference for cleaner energy via electric vehicles or EVs rise,” Ambassador Mukwita, an international relations analyst and expert said, “Zambia should place itself strategically so that it can make major gains in this geo economic race.”

Speaking on KBNtv´ s prime time show the ´Big Hour´ Mukwita said the southern African country must act now to benefit from its immense wealth in copper and cobalt as a top producer of the two minerals in Africa.

There´s no excuse for Zambia to be poor when its minerals are desired globally at prime prices said Mukwita.

“The West and China needs copper and cobalt, manganese lithium and other minerals which are plenty in Zambia its up to us to make good deals now as the EV industry heads for an over US$800 billion boom annually by 2030 according to industry experts,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

The author of a new book ´China in Africa the Zambia story,´ Mukwita also urged President Hakainde Hichilema to make haste and beat a path to Beijing to seek debt cancellation because deferment simply means postponing or transferring Zambia´s almost US$19 billion foreign debt to the future generation that are ten years old and younger today.

Of the entire foreign debt, Zambia owes China about US$6 billion.

“I personally support debt cancellation instead of debt postponement,” Mukwita said, “ when you postpone you simply move the burden to young people but the advantage though (of deferment) is that it gives us head room to breathe because you are not paying everything due per month or year but only part of it so the rest goes towards social responsibilities like buying drugs or chalk in schools.”

Ambassador Mukwita said Zambia must emulate other countries that are normalising or escalating relations with China because the Asian dragon is the future economic and military power, “the time to be good friends with China for Zambia is now.”

The author-diplomat cited an example of the United States which in the last one month dispatched foreign affairs boss Antony Blinken and finance or treasury chief Jennifer Yellen to Beijing to make peace with President Xi Jinping as “the signs of the times” to come.

“Its not only the US that recognises China´s rising power but we have seen President Emmanuel Macron of France beat a path to Beijing, President Lula da Silva of Brazil, the Prime Minister of India Modi and many more sending envoys,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

“I would urge Lusaka to seek the earliest appointment with Beijing as soon as possible and make hay while the sun shines,” Ambassador Mukwita said.

On the local scene, Ambassador Mukwita called for the breaking of the jinx of maintaining ´bad blood ‘among leaders once they vacate office saying the trend only saves to divide the nation although no one is above the law, unity is important.

“I am of the thought that other civil ways maybe a presidential enquiry commission that works quietly could help in future so that the dignity of Zambian presidents starting from Dr Kaunda, all his successors to President Hichilema and those after him can be maintained while the probing goes on,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

The full interview with host Paul Shingongo is available on the KBNtv Facebook page which is widely followed in Zambia and abroad.

Ambassador Mukwita´s new book that examines relations between China and Zambia, the US and the world is now available in Bookworld and Grey Matter around the country.

“The response for ´China in Africa, the Zambia Story´ has been overwhelming among universities and other high institutions of learning but more so on Amazon where it hoovers between top 100 to 500 African books out of a million since going live on 24th April,” Ambassador Mukwita said.

The author said the book also debunks the ´predatory´ tag or brush western media has consistently painted of China while it also exposes vices by Chinese companies in Zambia.

“It’s a must read for anyone with interest in geopolitics,” said Ambassador Mukwita who also encouraged readers to go to the book website and read some reviews by respected scribes such as Kellys Kaunda and Chapadongo Lungu, both former editors and award-winning writers.

UPDATE ON THE MINES AND MINERALS DEVELOPMENT SECTOR

UPDATE ON THE MINES AND MINERALS DEVELOPMENT SECTOR

Today, the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul Kabuswe, MP held a press briefing to address the following issues in that Ministry:

✅Mopani Copper Mine (Mopani)
Mopani is an asset owned by the people of Zambia through ZCCM-IH. Government has faced numerous challenges with Mopani since Glencore’s departure and the subsequent takeover by ZCCM-IH. However, over the past six months, Government has been actively searching for a new investor for Mopani. Government has received non-binding offers from four bidders in April/May and recently received the bidding offers on Monday, July 10, 2023. The government intends to close the deal with the successful bidder by July 31, 2023. Rest assured, Government will inform the nation about the successful bidder after the evaluation of the binding offers.

✅Konkola Copper Mines (KCM)
In regards to KCM, it is important to note that the shareholding structure consists of 80% Vedanta Resources (VR) and 20% ZCCM-IH. Since VR’s departure in 2019, the provisional liquidator has managed KCM. However, due to ongoing litigations against the government in both Zambian and British courts, the previous arrangement was found to be unsustainable when the new government came into power in August 2021. Consequently, the government decided to re-engage VR as the 80% shareholder to invest in the mine. Government has been negotiating the terms and conditions of this engagement, with only one matter still outstanding. Government is hopeful that this matter will be resolved within the month of July, and the citizens will be duly informed. Government is fully committed to protecting their interests while resolving the issue.

✅Kasenseli Gold Mine (KGM)
The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development suspended the exploration license of Zambia Gold Company (Zamgold) due to various violations. The two shareholders who owned exploration licenses in the Kasenseli Gold area agreed to transition into KGM when it was registered with PACRA. Under an agreement between the community and Zamgold, the shareholders have relinquished their shares in KGM. Negotiations are progressing well, and we anticipate concluding them before the end of July 2023.

✅Sugilite – Luapula Province
There have been recent reports about the discovery of the gemstone Sugilite in Mansa. This mineral has been found in two locations thus far, and there is a possibility of more discoveries. While the media has widely reported on Sugilite, we have yet to establish the full extent of this resource. Therefore, the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development is developing a comprehensive strategy to guide the responsible and sustainable management of exploration, mining, and exploitation of this precious mineral for the benefit of the Zambian citizens. Government is already undertaking activities aligned with this strategy, and the nation will be informed as soon as the geologists complete their work.

✅Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM)
The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development is implementing various activities to formalise the ASM subsector, which has experienced illegal mining activities in certain provinces. The aim is to promote the participation of Zambians across the mining value chain in a formalized manner. The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has been working closely with institutions such as the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development to facilitate the formalization of operations. Thus far, 52 mining cooperatives have been registered by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development. Additionally, has approved a significant number of licenses from November 2022 to July 2023.

✅Minerals Regulation Commission
Institutional reforms are underway to enhance the regulation of the mining sector. One of the key reforms is the establishment of an independent mining regulator, the Minerals Regulation Commission. The commission will play a crucial role in monitoring and regulating mining activities, ensuring compliance, and combating lawlessness and illegality. The draft legislation for the establishment of the commission has been finalided and is currently with the Ministry of Justice for submission to Cabinet and subsequently to Parliament.

✅Three (3) Million Tonnes Strategy
To increase copper production in Zambia from the current average of 800,000 tonnes to 3 million tonnes in the next nine years, Government has developed a draft strategy. The key priority in achieving this target is geological mapping and mineral exploration. Government will collaborate with the private sector and other investors to enhance copper production from both brownfields and greenfield projects. Addressing the issues surrounding Mopani and KCM, as mentioned earlier, is vital for reaching this production goal.

✅Conditions Precedent to the 3 Million Tonne Strategy
To achieve an annual copper production of 3 million tonnes, Government is investing in the acquisition of geological information. This information will not only contribute to copper production but also help us understand the potential resources and quantities of other minerals in Zambia. The mapping activities will align with the energy transition and include a draft strategy on lithium and other critical minerals. The geological mapping and exploration will take place between May and November each year.

In conclusion, the prospects for the mining sector in Zambia are promising, and the Government is fully committed to increasing the sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP. Government aims to promote economic and social well-being for all Zambians, generate sustainable jobs, and manage the sector in a responsible manner. Government will continue implementing various policies and legislative measures to achieve these goals and secure the benefits for present and future generations.

Mufulira Residents Breath Fire Over Alleged ZNS Corrupt Operations As Regards To The Rampant Smuggling Of Mealie-meal Into DRC

MUFULIRA RESIDENTS BREATH FIRE OVER ALLEGED ZNS CORRUPT OPERATIONS

By Dockiso Zulu & Kalonje Mumba

Some residents of Mufulira District on the Copperbelt Province have complained over the alleged corrupt operations by the Zambia National Service -ZNS- as regards to the rampant smuggling of mealie-meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC.

The residents have alleged that ZNS officers that have been placed at various check points to prevent the illegal exportation of Mealie-Meal into the Neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC- are the major contributors to the continuous smuggling of Mealie-meal that has triggered the escalating prices of the commodity in the district.

One of the residents, Juliet Mulwe claims that, those that are carrying Mealie-Meal on bicycles for consumption are being arrested and Mealie- Meal grabbed from them whilst those that are smuggling the commodity using vehicles are being allowed after a bribe is paid to ZNS officers at check points

Another resident, Florence Keke tells Mafken FM radio that, vehicles that are using the Muya road to Smuggle Mealie- Meal into DRC are moving at very high speed and lives will be lost soon.

And Agripa Monga, a farmer at Muya Farming Area at the DRC Boarder says the smuggling of mealie meal into DRC is getting out of hand.

Mr. Monga says the smuggling is worse than it was in February, in that, it is even happening during the day with the front number plates of the perpetrators vehicles removed for fear of being identified.

Meanwhile, ZNS Head of Public Relations Colonel Mable Mulenga-Nyone notes that, ZNS has a zero tolerance to abuse of authority and involvement in corrupt activities by any of its employees.

Mrs Nyone says she will take this matter seriously and investigations will be constituted to ascertain the truth, adding that, if anyone will be found wanting, they will be dealt with appropriately.

She however, appeals to members of the public who have proof to report such cases to a whistle blowers dedicated number, adding that, the information will be kept confidential.

I Want To Be A Minister Of Reconciliation For One Zambia – One Nation In The Next Govt Of Edgar Chagwa Lungu- Chilufya Tayali

0

EEP President Chilufya Tayali

I WANT TO BE A MINISTER OF RECONCILIATION FOR ONE ZAMBIA – ONE NATION IN THE NEXT GOVT OF EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

There was an overwhelming response of affirmation, on my 20:00hrs Direct Talk program, last night, that President Lungu should come back in 2026. I went to sleep thinking about this and saw it happening in 2026 if not earlier.

It is clear President Hakainde Hichilema has failed to change the lives of Zambians for the better, as promised, rather, he has made things worse, and therefore he is certainly going to be voted out in 2026.

This morning I woke up thinking of how President Hichilema has been so ruthless to some of us, including to President Edgar Lungu and his family. I imagined, how many people would want to avenge for the injustices.

But when I went to Church, Fr. Moses Zwanyika, Parish Priest of Roma Parish, spoke strongly about being different from those who persecute us.

Giving a homily, reflecting on Matthew 10:16-23 which reads;

“Jesus said to his Apostles:
“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men,
for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes.””,

Fr. Moses emphasized, that people, including those who are close to us, will do bad things to us, but the issue is how we react to them. He said that, we should not seek revenge but respond with love.

I have been arrested 9 times since President Hichilema came into power for speaking the truth, but my heart harbors no hate or bitterness and I pray that, all of us who are going through persecutions as the result of President Hichilema’s bad governance, should be able to forgive.

Therefore, I am proposing that, in the next Govt of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, we should create a Commission of Reconciliation for One Zambia – One Nation (not a Ministry, I just wanted to catch your attention) to unite this Country, because we are more divided than ever.

This commission should be led by Church and civic leaders.

Otherwise @2026aleya, @Lungu_alebwelelapo!!!

I sent $80K to my millionaire boyfriend I’ve never met but I believe he’s real” – Elderly White lady refuses to believe she was scammed

0

An elderly American woman known as Terri has revealed she sent nearly $80,000 to her virtual boyfriend before she realized that her relationship may not be what it seemed.

Speaking as a guest on “Dr. Phil,” program, Terri revealed she met her man “Ricardo” on Facebook Messenger two years ago.

A month after they started talking, Ricardo asked Terri to invest $10,000 in Bitcoin, promising a speedy return of $1 million in six months.

Terri has been sending Ricardo money ever since, with only photos and phone calls to prove that her internet boyfriend exists — but she’s never gotten a return from her investments.

Ricardo claimed to be a U.S. citizen from Los Angeles, but says his relocation to Canada for work allegedly prevented him from meeting his lady love in person.

Whenever Terri tried to make arrangements to meet in person, she told Dr. Phil, Ricardo “always had an excuse.”

Terri’s sister, Tammy, felt she was being scammed and went with Terri on the show.

“People are still telling me that Ricardo isn’t real, that he’s scamming me and that he’s not in Canada,” Terri lamented.

“I don’t believe them … I believe Ricardo’s real.”

Dr. Phil agreed with Tammy’s skepticism and exposed “Ricardo” as a scam by fact-checking the story he fed Terri.

The man who really appeared in the photos Ricardo sent to Terri is named James — and this isn’t the first time his likeness has been stolen.

According to James, the photos are taken from his social media and “used for romance scams.”

“I’ve been dealing with this for over 10 years,” James said in a video sent to the “Dr. Phil” show. “I hope this video can show that I am the person in the photos, but I am not the person that Terri has been talking to and sending money to.”

While Terri was devastated to discover that her lover wasn’t real, she vowed to block the scammer and get a new phone number.

“I’m heartbroken,” Terri said to Dr. Phil, “but I’m done.”

Even though she was sad, Terri was able to joke about the situation and say that she didn’t blame James at all.

“If I see [James],” she said, “I won’t punch him out.”

China’s Presence in Cuba Poses Huge Threat to US

0

China’s enhanced intelligence-gathering and new military presence in Cuba shows Beijing simply no longer cares what the US thinks.

Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has comprehensively invested in a cash-strapped Cuba in exchange for access to an electronic intelligence collection (ELINT) facility, and negotiated an agreement to train Chinese soldiers on the north side of the island.

Washington has responded to these developments with great concern, especially in light of the strategic threat posed by the PRC’s presence in the area, reported Asia Times.

Asia Times is a Hong Kong-based English-language news media publishing group.

Chinese intelligence gathering through Cuba dates back to 1999, when Cuba allowed the PRC access to Soviet-era facilities in Bejucal, a city south of the capital, for the purpose of gathering information on the United States.

The Chinese have been running an intelligence base in Cuba for some time, and they only upgraded it in 2019, according to the Biden administration’s reaction to the WSJ report. According to presidential spokesperson John Kirby, the rumours that China was “building” the base were inaccurate.

The discussion, however, did not clarify how much money the PRC contributed to the 2019 upgrade or whether it was covered by the debt relief and investment credits granted to Cuba by the PRC in November.

The potential rotation of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) military personnel through the island for training, however, crosses a modest but significant threshold in terms of a long-term Chinese military presence close to the US mainland, according to Asia Times.

Regardless of the specifics, both moves demonstrate a greater willingness on the part of Cuba and the PRC to take risks through overtly US-focused military programmes, raising the possibility that they will also take comparable risks in other contexts.

Because of the huge ramifications, Washington will need to respond appropriately and carefully to both current and potential future events involving both parties.

Since the 1962 missile crisis, the Cuban leadership has consistently been willing to harbour military threats against the United States.

However, the regime’s willingness to allow PRC military operations on the island, even at the risk of being discovered by US counterintelligence, more starkly demonstrates the regime’s current resource desperation amid severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine – which have sparked a growing exodus of refugees from the island and sparked scattered protests that prompted the government to temporarily shut down the internet.

Such desperation is consistent with actions taken by the Cuban government in response to shortages, such as providing notable tax breaks, long-term land leases, and the opportunity to repatriate profits in exchange for investments meant to address shortages in the nation’s oil supply, rum supply, and food production, as per Asia Times.

Regarding the PRC, its willingness to host anti-US military forces for intelligence gathering and training close to the continental United States is a significant shift from the PRC’s otherwise moderate military activities in the area.

Prior engagements by the PRC military in the area have regularly centred on hospital ship visits, participation in MINUSTAH, the United Nations mission maintaining peace in Haiti, training and professional military exchanges, and institutional visits.

While it is true that the United States and other democratic states conduct international waters and airspace operations under the freedom of navigation principle (FONOPs), the United States cannot simply tolerate an intelligence collection facility 100 miles from its shore operated by its principal geopolitical rival, nor the rotations of PLA military personnel through the island. Such acts of espionage go beyond the simple characterization of “what rivals do” and should be met with a response.

Besides military strikes or other extreme measures that would ultimately be counterproductive for the relationship with the region, the United States most likely can neither persuade nor coerce Cuba and the PRC into abandoning their US-focused military cooperation.

While it is true that the United States and other democratic states operate in international waters and airspace in accordance with the freedom of navigation principle (FONOPs), the United States cannot merely accept the rotation of PLA military personnel through the island or an intelligence gathering facility run by its main geopolitical rival 100 miles from its shore. Such espionage activities require a reaction since they go beyond the simple categorization of “what competitors do.”

The United States is unlikely to be able to convince Cuba and the PRC to end their US-focused military cooperation without resorting to military strikes or other drastic steps that would eventually be detrimental to relations with the region.

This should not, however, stop the United States from using all other tools at its disposal to keep up pressure on and isolate China and the Cuban government. This helps restrict the spread of other capabilities, including anti-US intelligence gathering, abroad.

Additionally, it sends a clear message to other countries that explicitly cooperating with adversaries from outside the hemisphere will result in harsh penalties and a threat to US security, Asia Times reported.

NIGERIA: Tinubu seeks Senate’s approval for $800m loan from World Bank

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on has asked the Senate to amend the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act and approve a request for obtaining a loan facility of $800million from the World Bank to finance the National Safety Net Programme of the Federal Government.

Recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari had, towards the tail end of his administration, forwarded same request to the 9th Senate in May.

But the 9th Assembly could not consider the request before its tenure ended in June 11.

Tinubu, in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary Thursday, asked the 10th Senate to approve the borrowing request.

The president, in the letter, explained that the loan would be used to scale up the National Social Safety Net Programme.

He said the new borrowing would be sourced from the World Bank.

Tinubu’s letter reads: “Please note that the federal executive council led by President Muhammadu Buhari approved an additional loan facility to the tune of $800 million to be secured from the World Bank for the National Social Safety Net programme. Copy of FEC’s extract attached.

“You may also wish to note that the purpose of the facility is to expand coverage of shock responsive safety net support among the poor and vulnerable Nigerians. This will assist them in coping with basic needs.

“You may further wish to note that under the conditional cash transfer window of the programme, the federal government of Nigeria will transfer the sum of N8,000 per month to 12 million poor and low income households for a period of six months, with a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.

“In order to guarantee the credibility of the process, digital transfers will be made directly to beneficiaries’ accounts and mobile wallets.

“It is expected that the programme, will stimulate economic activities in the informal sector, and improve nutrition, health, education, and human capital development of beneficiaries’ households.

“Given the above, I wish to invite the Senate to kindly grant approval for the additional loan facility of $800 million to be secured from World Bank for the National Social Safety Net Programme.

“While hoping that this submission will receive expeditious consideration by the Senate, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Kasukuwere fights back

SELF-EXILED former Cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s bid for the country’s presidency appears ruined after the High Court in Harare nullified his nomination.

Undaunted by the ruling, Kasukuwere’s chief election agent, lawyer Jacqueline Sande yesterday, however, immediately filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Posting last night on Twitter, Kasukuwere’s head of communications and stakeholder management Ali Naka said: “Breaking!!!! Notice of appeal against the High Court ruling against the leading presidential candidate in Zimbabwe has been successfully filed with the Supreme Court. This suspends the High Court Ruling. Saviour Kasukuwere is still on the ballot! Hande tione (It’s game on)!!”

Earlier in the day, Sande had said: “The absence of president Kasukuwere on the ballot will compromise the credibility of the upcoming elections.”

In a ruling read by his colleague Never Katiyo, High Court judge Justice David Mangota said Kasukuwere failed to prove why he should remain a presidential candidate.

The judge made the ruling after a Zanu-PF member, Lovedale Mangwana, approached the court seeking an order to declare a decision by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to accept Kasukuwere’s nomination papers null and void.

Mangwana said Kasukuwere’s candidature was in violation of section 91 of the Constitution because he had been out of his constituency and country for 18 consecutive months.

Kasukuwere, who was popularly known as Tyson in Zanu-PF political circles in his heyday, fled the country during the 2017 military coup which deposed the late former President Robert Mugabe and propelled Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Presidency.

In his opposing papers, Kasukuwere, through his lawyers from Mhishi Nkomo Legal Practice, denied that he had been out of the country for 18 months and demanded proof.

Kasukuwere claimed that he left the country on a temporary basis on medical grounds.

He also said he was a registered voter and was appearing on the voters roll in compliance with section 91 of the Constitution.

In his ruling, the judge said Kasukuwere had failed to provide evidence that he was out of the country on a temporary basis.

“Kasukuwere, for some inexplicable reason, snatches the onus from Mangwana to himself,” Justice Mangota said.

“He challenges Mangwana to challenge him to prove that he was out of Zimbabwe for more than 18 consecutive months. He confirms in paragraph 22.6 that he was out of Zimbabwe on a temporary basis when he went for treatment.

“He does not, however, show, as he offers to do, the date(s) that he left Zimbabwe and/or the date(s) that he returned to Zimbabwe. Nor does he attach to his notice of opposition a doctor’s report which indicates he was/is, indeed, receiving medical attention from outside Zimbabwe.”

He added: “All what he does is to depose his opposing affidavit not from Zimbabwe, but from South Africa. The observed matter confirms that, even as the application is heard, he is not in Zimbabwe and/or his constituency as well as that he will return to Zimbabwe at some future, but unknown date.”

In his founding affidavit, Mangwana argued that the Electoral Act does not allow a candidate who has been out of the country for over 18 months to contest for Presidency.

“The law is that if you are not ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe for 18 months, then you are said to have ceased to be a registered voter,” said advocate Lewis Uriri, who is representing Mangwana.

“So Mr Kasukuwere ceased by operation of law to be a registered voter and consequently ceased to be qualified to run for or to occupy the office of the President of Zimbabwe.

“So the court has declared acceptance of his nomination by the nomination court sitting at Harare invalid and consequently he cannot run for the office of the President.”

Kasukuwere faces arrest over pending cases, police have said.

Zanu-PF has also said Kasukuwere faces other criminal charges.

However, sources said there was panic in Zanu-PF over Kasukuwere’s candidature amid fears that he may split the ruling party vote.

ZESCO Ndola Girls goalkeeper Leticia Lungu Named As Replacement For Injured Hazel Nali

LUNGU NAMED AS REPLACEMENT FOR INJURED HAZEL NALI

ZESCO Ndola Girls goalkeeper Leticia Lungu has been called up to the Zambia team in place of goalkeeper Hazel Nali who has withdrawn due to injury ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Lungu was part of the 35-member provisional team that was in Germany for an international camp but did not make the final team as Nali, Kazakhstan-based goalkeeper Catherine Musonda and Nkwazi Queens goalkeeper Eunice Sakala made the cut.

Nali’s World Cup journey came to a premature end after she suffered laxity in the Medial Collateral Ligament and a complete tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during training in Germany and is likely to be out of action for six weeks minimum.

Meanwhile, Thandiwe Zulu and Green Buffaloes Women FC defender Anita Mulenga have joined the Copper Queens technical bench in New Zealand as team nutritionist and equipment manager respectively.

Zulu, a lecturer at Makeni School of Nursing will conduct nutritional assessment on the team and provide dietary guidelines for the team through their training, pre-match, matchday and post-match recovery programmes. She has previously been part of surveys in the minimum diversity for children and women.

She comes in with a wealth of experience in maternal and child nutrition, food security, sports nutrition as well as rural household food security. In the sports field, Zulu is a squash player and introduced squash at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and later served as squash president in 2016.

2022 WAFCON bronze medallist Anita Mulenga joins the Copper Queens backroom staff as equipment manager and the initiative to engage Mulenga is part of the Football Association of Zambia’s Career Transition Programme.

Jacob Zuma should go back to prison and complete a 15-month jail term, a top South African Court has ruled

South Africa’s top court on Thursday upheld an earlier ruling that former president Jacob Zuma should return to prison to complete his 15-month term for contempt of court, dismissing an appeal seeking to keep him out of jail.

It was not immediately clear whether Zuma would return to jail, with prison authorities saying they were studying the judgement and would seek legal advice.

Zuma was sentenced in June 2021 after refusing to testify before a panel probing financial sleaze and cronyism under his presidency — but was freed on medical parole just two months into his term.

He started serving the sentence early in July.

His jailing sparked riots that descended into looting and left more than 350 dead in the worst violence to hit the country since the advent of democracy in South Africa.

The following month, he was admitted to the hospital for an undisclosed condition before being granted medical parole.

In November last year, an appeals court found the release was illegally granted and ordered the now 81-year-old back to the Estcourt Correctional Center in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

South Africa’s prison service, which had granted Zuma’s conditional release, appealed the decision, but the bid was dismissed by the Constitutional Court.

It ruled on Thursday that it had “no reasonable prospects of success” and ordered the prison services and Zuma, an intervening applicant, to pay legal costs.

The prison services declared in October last year that Zuma had officially ended his sentence and had been released from their system.

But in November the appeals court described the pronouncement as “premature”.

On Thursday, the prison services said they were “studying the Constitutional Court Judgment for the review application in relation to the medical parole placement for the former President”.

They added in a statement that they were “seeking legal advice and will comment further in due course”.

Zuma’s spokesman Mzwanele Manyi referred requests for comment to prison authorities.

South Africa’s leading opposition party, the Democratic Alliance described the latest ruling as a “victory for the rule of law”.

“Zuma must now go back to jail!” the party wrote on Twitter.

INJURY SCAPEGOAT: Hazel Nali Thrown Out Of Copper Queens Camp For Leading “Mutiny” Over Daily Allowances

INJURY SCAPEGOAT: Hazel Nali Thrown Out Of Copper Queens Camp For Leading “Mutiny” Over Daily Allowances

… Nali And Grace Chanda Were Singled Out As Ring Leaders

… Reported Knock Is Being Used As Scapegoat, But In Essence Is Retribution, For Her Stance On Player Allowances

Copper Queens goalkeeper Hazel Nali has been sent home for allegedly leading a ‘mutiny’ over allowances that FAZ feel would have almost jeopardized the team’s successful Euro camp.

Nali and midfielder Grace Chanda were singled out as ring leaders among the senior players who were demanding clarity on their daily allowances.

A couple of days before Zambia played her first friendly against Ireland, the players demanded to be given their allowances some of which they claimed dated as far back as their participation at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations last July.

According to the players, those who participated at WAFCON are owed over K50, 000.

Instead of going forward with the match against Ireland, the players demanded clarity on the issues of allowances until FAZ general secretary Rueben Kamanga addressed them via a telephone call.

At that point, the players were asked to play the match and avoid a boycott after which funds would be credited to the accounts the following day.

True to the pledge by Kamanga, some funds were deposited the day after the Ireland friendly but only amounted to $500 (about K8500).

That upset the players because in their estimation, they were owed over K100, 000 in daily allowances for both WAFCON and the Europe outing.

Players are entitled to no less than $100 as daily allowances when camped outside the country.

When Nali, Grace and others questioned the amount, they were told it was all they were owed as they will receive another portion amounting to $30, 000 each for their participation from FIFA when at the tournament.

FAZ was not pleased with especially Nali and Grace who they have branded as indisciplined and a bad influence to the team.

Although both Nali and Grace had knocks and could have been kept on the bench against Germany, FAZ decided to keep them completely out of the team.

“Hazel and Grace were very stubborn on the issue of allowances.

“They were saying we are professionals and we must be treated like that. So, when the issue of the injury came in, it was an opportunity to get rid of her.

“For what she has done for the team, she could have been treated like Barbara Banda at the Africa Cup.

“We knew that Barbara was not eligible at the Africa Cup, but she went with the delegation because she was very key in the qualifiers and we kept that team spirit.

“So, why would we treat another senior player differently who is already at the tournament? It doesn’t make sense. The bottom line is there is a feeling that she has grown big headed and has become a bad influence on the team,” a highly placed source has disclosed.

Grace was also almost sent away on account of her injury but FAZ feared doing so would have exposed the scheme.

The players also questioned the rational behind FAZ sending of at least 10 women who are provincial executive committee members for the Europe tour when the expense on the delegation could have been channeled towards their allowances since the association was claiming budgetary constraints.

During the period the team was camped in Europe, batches of two to three FAZ provincial women’s representatives were sent for five to seven days to be with the team instead of one or two delegation leaders who could have been with the team for the duration of the outing.

Giving the association those arguments sounded like Nali and the other players were challenging the thinking of FAZ.

When the injury for Nali crept in, it was an opportunity for the association to send her away from the FIFA World Cup as a form of punishment and also an example to other players who would raise their voice over the allowances.

When contacted and presented with the information in this article, FAZ general Secretary Reuben Kamanga said; “Our focus is to support the player during this difficult period of rehabilitation and recovery from this injury. She needs our undivided support during these difficult times.”

FAZ National Women’s ExCo member Col. Priscilla Katoba and Mwansa Mutangama have been appointed delegation leader. They left the country under two days ago.

How can I interfere with witnesses in front of all media houses? – Lusambo

FORMER Kabushi member of parliament Bowman Lusambo says he was shocked when Diamond TV journalist Darius Choonya certified the State’s claims that he interfered with witnesses in a matter were he is facing 10 corruption related charges.

He said the men he poked when he jokingly told Choonya to give him a break and film witnesses of the ACC, are his associates.

Lusambo is facing three counts of attempting to interfere with witnesses who were scheduled to testify before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu in a matter where he is accused of posessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime, engaging in tax evasion among other charges.

Allegations in the three counts are that Lusambo between February 1, April 1 and April 30,2022 in order to obstruct the due course of justice endeavored to disuade or prevent Cosmas Chalusa, Enerst Sumani and Mundia Mataa to give evidence as witnesses before court.

In his defence before magistrate Trevor Kasanda, Lusambo said he did not know that Chalusa and Sumani were witnesses in his case as the Anti-Corruption Commission did not parade them before Court to warn them to attend Court.

“What happened on 7 April we were scheduled to appear before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu, that day the Court decided to adjourn the matter to letter dates. I was accompanied by my wife and we were walking outside of the court room,” he said

“There were so many media houses I told them why are you focusing on filming me alone we have people like Christopher Siwakwi. I directed the media to film Siwakwi and pointed at were he was standing and off we went”

Lusambo said he was not given a list of witnesses by the ACC neither did he point at potential witnesses.

“I was shocked when the ACC called Darius as a witness in this case claiming I pointed at Siwakwi (ACC investigations officer) and the witnesses,” he said.

He said Sumani and Chalusa are not strangers to him as he knows them on a personal level hence the reason he was joking with them after his court case.

“I knew Sumani in 2013 he was a town clerk in Ndola. We had so many transactions with Sumani. When I was acquiring land in Ndola I went through his office. In 2016 I became a minister of the Copperbelt province and I worked with him as my subordinate and the entire council,” Lusambo said.

“Shamenda told me honorable balemishupafye, ( they are troubling you) and I told him fyonse fikapwa ma politics aya( it shall be well these are just politics) . I didn’t know he was a witness.”

He explained that Chalusa is his business partner for many years and the latter owed him money in a land transaction.

Lusambo further claimed that he did not call Mataa to prevent him from testifying in his case.

“I was very shocked that there was a case against me that I was trying to stop Mr Chalusa from testifying before Hamaundu. Since the case started I never had any time with Mr Chalusa to discuss anything to do with the case,” Lusambo said.

“Mundia Mataa was lying that I called him and told him not to testify in the case. He was showing the Court a screenshot which had my name and not the number purporting he received a missed call from me which is not correct. At no time have I stopped the three from testifying they appeared before magistrate Hamaundu and testified, they testified in this Court that I did not do that.”

He said he was surprised that ACC investigations officer Mulenga Mulenga was his arresting officer when the case was investigated by Siwakwi.

During cross examination by ACC senior prosecutor Daniel Ngwira, Lusambo said he did not have evidence to prove that Choonya lied when the told the Court that he interfered with witnesses.

He said he could not tell if Sumani, Chalusa and Mataa who were in the company of Siwakwi were witnesses because he is not a fortune teller.

The matter has been adjourned to September 26, for continued defense.

DEBT RELIEF TO GROW ZAMBIA’S ICT SECTOR

DEBT RELIEF TO GROW ZAMBIA’S ICT SECTOR
July 12, 2023
Government says Zambia’s debt restructuring programme of $6.3 billion is set to grow the country’s Information and Communications Technology sector.

The sector that provides an opportunity for Zambia to address the digital divide and reduce poverty while registering economic growth is poised to be the fastest growing sector in the country.

This was revealed by Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati during the Impact Connect News Makers Forum in Lusaka last evening.
Mr. Mutati said the sector is expected to grow by 40 per cent this year as investors were waiting for Zambia and its creditors to reach a deal to restructure billions of dollars of loans to Zambia, ending a long impasse over the country’s 2020 default.

“It is growing by 40 per cent because last week, we granted three international licences to three companies; BCS, Baobab and AirtelTelesonic leading to an aggregate investment of atleast $55 million,” he said.

He said the companies were waiting for a trigger to invest their money and the trigger came in form of debt relief.
Mr. Mutati further revealed that Liquid Telecom is also expected to deliver the biggest data centre and innovation hub in the country and Southern Africa with a connection of 1,300 secondary schools to internet.

He expressed optimism that the connection of schools to the internet will improve the provision of education and make children to be part of the digital world.

Mr. Mutati assured citizens and stakeholders that the New Dawn Government will deliver internet connectivity in the remotest part of Zambia by the end of July 2023 and no Zambian will ever be out of connection.

Highlighting other benefits of the $6.3 billion debt restructuring agreement, Mr Mutati said that the agreement paves way for the disbursement of $188 and $75 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank respectively.

The Technology and Science Minister also disclosed that the agricultural sector has already received $14 million to support over 30,000 small scale farmers who are going to be given K5,000 each in order to elevate them from small scale to commercial farmers.
Mr. Mutati further said that the debt relief will boost the financial sector as players in the sector such as banks have been granted that rear freedom to be able to access international capital without shame so that they can be able to find opportunities for the investment community and earn new streams.

He expressed happiness that the debt restructuring deal allows Zambia to be paying $75 million per annum as opposed to the $600 million paid before the deal was clinched.

He said the key ingredients leading to the successful debt restructuring programme are anchored on Zambia’s strong leadership, determination and steadfastly remaining focused on the transfiguration of Zambia’s economy.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mutati said that Zambia’s agreement on a debt treatment with her official creditors is the biggest deal under the G20 Common Framework of debt relief and significant milestone in the country’s journey towards economic recovery and growth.
Speaking at the same event,

Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) Public Finance Researcher Matrina Mumba said her organisation has been working with the government in simplifying and disseminating information about the debt issue to the lowest level and providing checks and balances.
“We are one of the institutions that redflaged on the aspects of debt in the previous regime. We spoke about the huge debt that the previous regime was accumulating,” she charged.

She said CTPD is supplementing government efforts in explaining what debt restructuring means and the benefits that it has for the country.
And University of Zambia Students’ Union president Chandra Choongo said the debt burden had been chocking the country for too long hence the restructuring programme will alleviate its negative effects.

Mr. Chongo expressed confidence that the agreement reached for Zambia’s debt to be rescheduled for over more than 20 years with a three-year grace period during which only payments on interest are due will have a positive bearing on students.

He expressed confidence that the debt restructuring deal will enable government to increase budget allocation to the education sector.
He said students remain expectant that the government will expand infrastructure in higher learning institutions to accommodate the swelling number of students seeking tertiary education.

Zambia recently reached a debt restructuring deal, an agreement that signifies a crucial turning point in the country’s economic recovery and holds the potential to unlock vital financial resources, propelling the nation towards a path of stability and growth.
While in opposition, President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA promised to restructure the country’s debt management system which many have described as a milestone campaign fulfilment.

The Impact News Makers Forum was attended by Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson Thabo Kawana and other stakeholders.

Daily Maverick releases poll shows a Chamisa victory

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa and his Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party would win next month’s Zimbabwean elections by a margin of between 8% and 9% – if the elections are free and fair – a new poll reported by South African publication Daly Maverick suggests.

The poll of 2,000 registered voters, conducted by Elite Africa Research in June, found that if the elections were held then, 47.6% of respondents would vote for Chamisa in the presidential poll, while 38.7% would vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Similarly, the poll found that 47.7 % of respondents would vote for Chamisa’s CCC while 39.6% would vote for Mnangagwa’s ruling Zanu-PF party in the parliamentary elections.

The presidential, parliamentary and local council elections are all scheduled to be held on 23 August.

Even if these poll results suggest Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF would lose a fair contest, they are still quite flattering to the ruling party and president.

The poll also found, by much wider margins, that Zimbabweans believe their country is heading in the wrong direction and that the economy is getting worse.

A large majority of 69.4% said they thought the country was heading in the wrong direction, while only 27.3% felt it was heading in the right direction. Their views of the economy were even more critical, as more than three-quarters – 77.5% – said they believed the economy was getting worse while fewer than one-fifth – 19.6% – felt it was getting better.

A total of 59.8% of the 2,000 citizens polled said they hoped for a new government after the elections, while only 37% said they hoped for the same government.

Also revealing were the answers to the question of whether the respondents felt strongly favourable, somewhat favourable, somewhat unfavourable or strongly unfavourable towards a list of political leaders and parties.

Chamisa emerged with a net positive score of 29.6%, while Mnangagwa’s score was a net negative of 2.6%.

Similarly, the CCC registered a net positive score of 28.6% while Zanu-PF scored a net negative of 2.7%. The net scores were derived by subtracting the unfavourable responses from the favourable responses for each leader or party.

These results taken together suggest a high level of discontent among Zimbabweans towards Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF, but also some reluctance, possibly anxiety, about replacing them with Chamisa and the CCC.

Oscar Mutinda, the founder and CEO of Elite Africa Research which did the survey, confirmed this. He said that in conversations with people during the survey, it emerged many felt that even if the current government was doing a bad job, they were not confident the opposition could do much better.

The survey results, if replicated on 23 August, would mean Zimbabweans would have to go to the polls again soon after, as no presidential candidate would have won more than 50% of votes in the first round. In that case, a second round of voting would have to be held between the top two candidates to ensure the winner gets more than 50% of the votes.

Mutinda explained that the sample of 2,000 was selected to replicate national demographics such as the proportions of urban and rural voters as well as the proportions of voters in the country’s provinces.
