Stay away! Tanzanian president Samia warns foreign envoys on abductions

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan issued a strong warning to foreign diplomats on Tuesday, cautioning them against “interfering” in the country’s internal matters.

This comes amid accusations that Tanzania’s state security agencies are behind a series of abductions and killings of opposition figures, as the nation gears up for local government elections in November.

In her first major statement on the wave of violence, President Samia emphasised that her government is fully capable of addressing the issue without external intervention.

She criticised the statements of condemnation made by several Western diplomatic missions in Tanzania, stating they were unwelcome and violated the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Article 41 of the convention outlines that diplomats must refrain from interfering in the domestic affairs of the host country.

The president made it clear that Tanzania would not accept directives from foreign nations on how to handle the investigation of politically motivated violence.

This statement followed the escalating violence, most notably the September 6 abduction and murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao, a senior member of the Chadema opposition party.

Kibao was forcibly taken in broad daylight by suspected security agents from a bus near the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

His lifeless body was found in a nearby bush hours later, with his face partly disfigured by a chemical believed to be acid.

The incident came on the back of a growing number of disappearances, detentions, and beatings involving political and human rights activists in what the United States mission in Dares Salaam described in a September 9 statement as “efforts to disenfranchise citizens ahead of (the) elections.”

The European Union, British and Canadian High Commissions, and Norway and Switzerland embassies also issued a joint statement condemning the trend on September 10.

While the US embassy in Dar called for an “independent, transparent, and prompt investigation” into the incidents, the other five missions called for a “thorough inquiry.”

In a televised speech at an event in Moshi on Tuesday marking the 60th anniversary of the Tanzania Police Force’s formation, President Samia said “outsiders” should not claim to be more pained by the events than Tanzanians themselves.

“It is our own responsibility to find out why they (abductions and killings) are happening at this moment in time. We know what we need to do as a sovereign nation, and do not appreciate other countries telling us to do one, two, or three,” she said.

“I believe these statements were not sanctioned by the heads of state of those countries, but I have my own ways of checking with my fellow presidents, and once I confirm that they were not, I will lodge formal complaints with them.”

Before the diplomatic corps raised concerns, President Samia had already ordered a swift investigation into Ali Mohamed Kibao’s murder, with instructions for the findings to be made public as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa also addressed the matter on Monday, suggesting that while it’s “easy to blame the police,” there could be other hidden forces causing disruptions during election periods.

Chadema party leader Freeman Mbowe has expressed distrust in Tanzanian law enforcement and called for Britain’s Scotland Yard to be involved in the investigation. He emphasised that the party is sceptical about local authorities conducting a “proper and transparent” inquiry.

Chadema has further warned that it will organise nationwide protests if there is no significant progress in the investigation by next week.

Kibao’s killing, along with other violent incidents, has triggered public outrage and intensified concerns about safety as the country prepares for the municipal elections on November 28.

These elections are seen as a prelude to next year’s general election, where President Samia will seek re-election, and the ruling CCM party aims to retain legislative control until 2030.

“It is a miracle we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men” – Arteta

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described it as “a miracle” that his team came so close to victory after playing the entire second half of their 2-2 Premier League draw against Manchester City with only 10 men at the Etihad Stadium.

John Stones’ 98th-minute equaliser denied Arsenal what would have been a monumental win against the reigning champions, after winger Leandro Trossard was controversially sent off in first-half stoppage time. Arsenal held just 12.5% possession in the second half as City relentlessly attacked, with 28 shots—the second-highest in a single half since their dramatic 2012 title-winning game against QPR.

“There was only one team that came to play football,” City forward Bernardo Silva told TNT Sports Brazil. “The other came to play to the limits of what was possible to do and allowed by the referee, unfortunately. I’m glad we always enter the pitch to try to win every match.”

Despite City’s dominance, Arsenal were on the verge of becoming the first away team to win at the Etihad since Brentford in November 2022, a result that would have propelled them to the top of the Premier League. However, Stones’ late goal restored City to the summit.

“It is a miracle we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men,” Arteta said after the match. “It’s unbelievable what we have done.” Asked if his side would have won had Trossard not been sent off, Arteta responded: “I have no clue. We would have tried for sure. But what I can tell you is 99 out of 100 times if you play 56 minutes against this team with 10 men, you’re going to lose and you’re going to lose by a lot of goals.”

Arteta expressed frustration at conceding so late, given fourth official Andy Madley had indicated seven minutes of stoppage time, but Stones’ equaliser came in the 98th minute.

When questioned about Trossard’s red card, Arteta remained coy, stating, “It’s that obvious, so I’ll leave it to you guys.” Trossard, already on a yellow card, was sent off for kicking the ball away after barging into Bernardo Silva. Arsenal fans quickly pointed to a similar incident involving City winger Jeremy Doku, who escaped without sanction. However, the Premier League clarified that Trossard was booked for the latter offence.

City players also accused Arsenal of “time-wasting” tactics, which were said to prolong the game. City defender John Stones was critical of Arsenal’s approach, saying, “They slow the game down. They get the keeper on the floor so they can get some information on to the pitch. We had to control our emotions during those tough times.”

Silva echoed this sentiment, calling the game-breaking tactics “dirty” and adding, “It all started in the very first second. In the first action, we realised what was going to happen. We had a player injured after they sent him to the ground twice in 10 minutes. We had a goal conceded after the referee called our captain and then didn’t allow him to recover his position.”

Despite the heated exchanges and frustrations, the game was a thrilling spectacle. City captain Kyle Walker remarked on BBC Radio 5 Live, “As a football match, it is a great spectacle for the Premier League. Probably not so much certain stuff – I think it’s part and parcel of the game, and we’ll say the dark arts.”

The controversy surrounding the officiating and tactics clouded what could have been an iconic moment, with Arteta expressing disappointment that the match’s narrative was dominated by refereeing decisions rather than football.

“I want to be involved in a game at this level that puts the game in a situation that we can enjoy and talk about it in the proper way,” Arteta said. “We’re not talking about that. It’s clear. You haven’t asked me one single tactical question.”

You break into my house and you know you are getting shot – US Kamala Harris

0

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has spoken of her willingness to use her gun if an intruder entered her home.

“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” she said in a jokey exchange during a livestreamed event in Michigan with host Oprah Winfrey on Thursday.

After a laugh, the Democratic presidential nominee continued: “I probably shouldn’t have said that, but my staff will deal with that later.”

Harris, who highlighted during the recent presidential debate that she was a gun-owner, went on to reiterate that she supported a ban on assault weapons.

A firearm of that type was “literally designed to be a tool of war,” she told Winfrey. “It has no place on the streets of a civil society.”

When questioned by Oprah Winfrey about whether she had been a gun owner “for a while,” Kamala Harris confirmed that she had.

Harris emphasized her support for the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms in the U.S. However, she also outlined her stance on banning assault weapons, pointing to the country’s ongoing issue with school shootings as a critical reason for the need for such restrictions.

It was “bone-chilling” for a child to have to go through a drill for such an incident, Harris said. “It doesn’t have to be this way,” she added.

After one of the most recent US mass shootings, a 14-year-old boy has been charged with murdering four people at a high school in Georgia.

During Thursday’s event with Winfrey – who also spoke at last month’s Democratic National Convention – Harris was also questioned on topics including immigration and the economy.

Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez featured in the session, which was watched by about 300,000 people.

Harris’s gun ownership has been a matter of public record since 2019, when she said: “I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do – for personal safety. I was a career prosecutor.”

Kamala Harris’s ownership of firearms gained widespread attention in the U.S. following her recent presidential debate with Republican contender Donald Trump.

The 2024 showdown marked the first time the subject surfaced during the campaign.

During the debate, Harris refuted Trump’s allegation that she intended to seize guns from all citizens if she were to become president.

She clarified that both she and her vice-presidential candidate, Tim Walz—an avid hunter—were gun owners themselves.

MAN CITY PLAYERS ACCUSE ARSENAL OF ‘DARK ARTS’ AS ARTETA HAILS ‘MIRACLE’

MAN CITY PLAYERS ACCUSE ARSENAL OF ‘DARK ARTS’ AS ARTETA HAILS ‘MIRACLE’

Manchester City forward Bernardo Silva said only one team came to play football in their 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal, who were accused of employing “dark arts” at Etihad Stadium.

But Gunners manager Mikel Arteta claimed it was “a miracle” his side came so close to victory after playing the second half with 10 men.

John Stones’ 98th-minute equaliser denied Arsenal what would have been a huge victory over the defending champions.

After winger Leandro Trossard was controversially sent off in first-half injury time, the Gunners had just 12.5% of possession in the second half.

City had 28 shots in the second period – a number eclipsed only by the momentous ‘Aguero’ title-winning second half against QPR in 2012.

“There was only one team that came to play football,” Silva told TNT Sports Brazil. “The other came to play to the limits of what was possible to do and allowed by the referee, unfortunately.

“I’m glad we always enter the pitch to try to win every match.”

Arsenal were seconds away from becoming the first away team to win at the Etihad since Brentford in November 2022 – and move top of the Premier League – before Stones snatched a point that instead returned City to the summit.

“It is a miracle we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men,” said Arteta. “It’s unbelievable what we have done.”

Asked if his side would have won had Trossard stayed on the pitch, Arteta said: “I have no clue. We would have tried for sure. But what I can tell you is 99 out of 100 times if you play 56 minutes against this team with 10 men, you’re going to lose and you’re going to lose by a lot of goals.”

That Arsenal conceded so late given fourth official Andy Madley had signalled there would be seven minutes of stoppage time just added to Arteta’s frustration.

He said he was happy to let others draw their own conclusions on Trossard’s red card.

The incident came just a week after Gunners midfielder Declan Rice served a one-match ban for getting a second yellow for kicking the ball away.

Trossard, having already been booked, barged Silva in the back, then kicked the ball away. The Premier League confirmed he was shown a second yellow for the latter offence by referee Michael Oliver.

ECL TO EXIT UKA NEXT MONTH, SOURCES SAY

ECL TO EXIT UKA NEXT MONTH, SOURCES SAY

By a KBN TV Reporter

Former Republican President Edgar C. Lungu (ECL) is reported to have firmed up his plans to exit the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) in the first or second week of October, 2024 and will accept his 2026 nomination on the Tonse Alliance or People’s Pact.

Sources close to the former Head of State say ECL is displeased with how UKA handled the expulsion of Sean Tembo yet the alliance seem to have treated Saboi Imboela with kids gloves.

“The boss thinks UKA has been unfair to Sean Tembo but the alliance has failed to deal with Saboi who has issued similar statements,” says the source close to the matter.

According to our source, ECL has heaped the blame on UKA Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota whom he has accused of being biased in the manner he has handled matters especially concerning the PF.

When contacted for a comment, Sikota refused to comment saying he wasn’t aware of that position and didn’t want to give legitimacy to the claim that ECL plans to exit the alliance.

And a political analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity, said PF were making a big political gamble to bank their chances of bouncing back on the failures of the UPND Government.

“It’s not that the PF is suddenly popular, what they are attempting to do is a huge gamble, it might end up being a blunder. The truth of the matter is that the loud PF carders are making the noise and creating the perception that PF is popular when in fact not,” says the source.

He reminded this reporter of the 2011 elections when RB and the MMD thought they were popular, but ended up losing to Micheal Sata.

“I don’t know how well you remember the days of Dean Mungomba and Zadeco, it looked like a revolution and that Dean would win, but he ended up with only two seats in Parliament,” he said, adding that the same thing was witnessed with BY Mwila where the crowds seemed incredibly in support of him but he lost.

Speaking about the 2021 experience, the source said PF and ECL were pulling huge campaign crowds and they were convinced they would win, but the results shocked them despite projecting themselves as the most popular and favorites in the last election.

Asked about the 2026 permutations, the anonymous political analyst claims with UPND, UKA and PF under Tonse Alliance in the race, there might be no outright winner which will call for a rerun, adding that given the way PF are going about antagonizing political relationships, they might find it difficult to back UKA or vice versa during the rerun.

Other sources claim that UKA adopted a tactical approach to manage several key stakeholders who hinted that the Alliance would lose support should they endorse ECL as the 2026 flag bearer.

“Contrary to what people think, UKA has been doing a lot of bargaining in the background with a lot of influential organisations and critical voices that have made it very categorical that if the alliance picks the former Head of State as its flag bearer, they should forget about getting the support because that will be taking the country back to days of caderism and lawlessness,” the source said, adding that these are critical matters that UKA has been dealing with respectfully to try and align everyone and at the same time minimize the risk of losing support.

UPND risks losing elections in 2026 – Kabimba

UPND risks losing elections in 2026 – Kabimba

ECONOMIC Front (EF) leader Wynter Kabimba says the UPND risks losing general elections in 2026 if it does not attend to the current economic needs of the Zambian people.

Kabimba stated that the fact that EF has decided to work with the current regime does not change the variables on the ground at the moment.

Appearing on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview last night, the former cabinet minister said there’s need for government to respond to the current economic problems by satisfying the demands and expectations of citizens before 2026.

“Even now I can tell you that if the UPND does not change direction in terms of its economic policies that would go to satisfy the demands of the people [and] the expectations of the people, they could lose the elections in 2026,” he shared.

“The fact that we have decided to work with the UPND does not change the variables on the ground and the fundamentals, the issues of hunger, the issues of the high cost of living, the issues of high fuel prices, those are fundamentals that the UPND should attend to and very very quickly before the citizens reach a point where they have made up their mind that no more UPND. I’m [saying] this now that I’m the part of the UPND alliance.”

He mentioned that there were many areas in the current government’s policies he did not agree with despite joining the alliance.

Kabimba added that the EF joined the UPND to contribute to the corruption fight which he believes as a noble cause.

“Yes I criticised the UPND before joining them and even now I can agree there are so many things I don’t agree with in terms of policy but again if you look at my text we put a rider to that. This country is bigger than what divides EF and the UPND. This country is bigger than what divides Wynter Kabimba and the president,” he shared.

He also noted that there was need for the President to come out in the open and declare that some of the things he promised the citizenry were misleading due to lack of access to information.

“President Hakainde Hichilema could have been misled. I’m sure he believed in many of the things he talked about but they were not real such as that, he could fix this power or energy regime or structure easily. Firstly, he didn’t know the money that was owed, he found out recently, they were shocked. He didn’t have the information that PF had defaulted on Euro bonds,” noted Kabimba.

“There’s a possibility that a lot of information that he had in opposition  [while making his campaign promises] was misleading. What I expected the president to do was to say to the Zambian people that I didn’t have the information that I have now.”

Dalitso’s 80 Cars, 15 Properties, and Millions in Rentals is a Clear Comfirmation of The Lungu Family’s Legacy of Greed and Betrayal

By Magret Mwanza

As the curtain slowly closes on former President Edgar Lungu’s reign, the stench of corruption refuses to dissipate. With the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC) setting December 6, 2024, as the date for judgment on the forfeiture of over 80 vehicles and other properties belonging to Edgar Lungu’s son, Dalitso, the country is reminded of the reckless plunder that characterized the Lungu family’s time in power. This is not a matter of political persecution, as some would want the public to believe; this is the beginning of justice. The magnitude of wealth amassed by Dalitso, his sister Tasila, and other family members is staggering, and it highlights the systemic abuse of public office under the former president.

Dalitso Lungu, an individual without a traceable income justifying such massive acquisitions, has been found with 80 vehicles registered in his name. As if that were not enough, he also owns filling station, rented out for an astounding $52,000 per month, along with 15 properties located in Lusaka’s most affluent areas. How can one justify such a portfolio while the majority of Zambians struggle daily, and hospitals lacked the most basic medical supplies during his father’s presidency? The sheer opulence amassed by the Lungu family can no longer be masked as mere political persecution—it is the result of blatant economic rape of the Zambian people.

In a separate ruling, the court recently ordered the forfeiture of Tasila Lungu’s farm valued at K13.9 million, also for being a proceed of crime. The implications are clear: the Lungu family systematically looted the nation’s resources for personal gain. These properties and assets are not mere symbols of success; they are the fruits of exploitation, the consequence of a government that allowed the powerful to enrich themselves while the masses were left to fend for survival.

Dalitso’s case is emblematic of the broader corruption that pervaded his father’s administration. The 80 plus vehicles, multiple properties, and lucrative rentals all point to one thing: an insatiable appetite for wealth that went unchecked for years. The Lungu family saw public office not as a chance to serve the nation but as a golden opportunity to enrich themselves at the expense of the Zambian people. The wealth, amassed in a few short years, reveals a pattern of greed, and it serves as a stark reminder of the scale of plunder that took place during Edgar Lungu’s presidency.

The depth of this scandal is more than criminal—it is morally bankrupt. How can one individual accumulate so much while hospitals lacked medicine, children went without education, and the economy collapsed under the weight of mismanagement? The Lungu administration not only allowed this but thrived on it. The disconnect between the lavish lifestyle of the former first family and the desperate conditions faced by ordinary Zambians is a betrayal of the nation’s trust.

No amount of political maneuvering or attempted comebacks will wash away these sins. Dalitso and his family’s wealth were not earned through legitimate means; they were stolen from the people of Zambia. The properties, the cars, and the businesses are all products of systemic corruption, and the courts must deliver justice by stripping away this ill-gotten fortune.

What makes this case particularly egregious is the brazenness with which this looting occurred. Dalitso did not just acquire a few properties here and there—he amassed an empire. From 80 unaccounted-for vehicles to multimillion-dollar filling stations and prime real estate in Lusaka, his wealth mirrors the depths of the Lungu family’s corruption. This is not simply about the accumulation of wealth; it is about the devastation left in its wake. Every Kwatcha stolen by the Lungu family was a Kwatcha that could have been used to better the lives of ordinary Zambians. It could have provided medicine for sick children, funded education, or repaired the country’s dilapidated infrastructure. Instead, it was siphoned away for personal gain.

As Zambians await the court’s judgment, it is important to remember that this case is not just about one individual—it is about a system that allowed such blatant corruption to thrive. The Lungu family’s wealth represents the very worst of what can happen when power goes unchecked, when public office is seen as a means of personal enrichment rather than a duty to serve the people.

The upcoming judgment will hopefully set a precedent for future leadership in Zambia. It should be a reminder to all politicians and public officials that they are stewards of the nation’s resources, not its looters. No one, regardless of their position, should be allowed to enrich themselves at the expense of the people. The court must send a clear message: corruption, no matter how high up it reaches, will not be tolerated in Zambia.

This case also serves as a sobering lesson for those who still cling to the idea that Edgar Lungu’s presidency was anything other than a disaster for Zambia. The facts are laid bare before us. The Lungu family enriched itself while the nation suffered. The judgment day for Dalitso, and by extension the Lungu family, is not just a legal moment; it is a moment of reckoning for Zambia. The country cannot afford to return to the days of unchecked plunder, and the people must demand accountability from their leaders, present and future.

As December 6 approaches, the nation holds its breath, not just for Dalitso’s fate but for the fate of accountability in Zambia. The Zambian people deserve to see justice served, and they deserve a future where their leaders prioritize the nation’s well-being over their personal fortunes.

WE HAVE BEEN TRAUMATIZED LONG ENOUGH- Faston Mwale

WE HAVE BEEN TRAUMATIZED LONG ENOUGH

It cannot be denied that the reigning capitalist mode of production is directly responsible for the long list of calamities we are enduring today. Neo-liberal capitalist policies religiously pursued by the ruling United Party for National Development have not only disoriented the ruling party but have also caused massive trauma in the struggling mass of the population.  Since coming to power three years ago, the UPND’s neoliberal policies have had a deleterious impact on the livelihood earning capacities of a great majority of our people.

During the run up to the general elections of 2021, the promise of a better life, building a corrupt free society, restoration of democratic heritage, among others, produced a motive force that propelled the UPND to power with relative ease. But no sooner had the UPND assumed state power than they aborted the promise for a more dignified life for our people. Today, we are being treated to unparalleled forms of greed, corruption and sheer insensitivity. We have ended up with a government that is thoroughly detached from the people’s daily struggles for water and sanitation, food, housing, jobs, transport and many more. Predatory (kandilepo) politics conceived from ferocious greed, insatiable lust for power and material wealth, prestige and self-aggrandizement is a key escalator for grand corruption.

While our leaders and government officials are reportedly competing for choice properties, choice cars, choice accounts, 60 percent of Zambians are living below the poverty line and nearly half the population has been condemned to the most extreme forms of subsistence with no prospect of a better life under the current regime.

In the context of wholesale national meltdown of power supply, the alarming statistics of poverty are bound to worsen further. I shudder to imagine what would become of Zambia at the turn of 2026. But the masses have also a share of blame in the current malaise. In the face of unrestrained plunder of our public wealth, we have maintained a silence that closely resembles a special type of docility. How can we keep quiet in the wake of economically and socially devastating power outages, for example. The dislocation of industry from prolonged power outages is profound. The number of voices talking about the impact of drought vis-à-vis power imports and exports is relatively minute. There is need for more voices to speak to the mismanagement of the economy. I know just like everybody else that the political atmosphere prevailing in our country is toxic with arbitrary arrests and prolonged detentions simply for speaking out, but if we do not voice out, who will?

As 2026 draws nearer, it is crucially important to find the necessary leadership, a leadership with the right bearings to put an end to poverty, power outages, corruption, election rigging, unemployment and all that constitute the existing intolerable underdevelopment. It is possible to break out of the poverty cycle and live and lead better lives. But overcoming poverty is a collective call. Socialism (ubwananyina) is the way to go.

We have been traumatized for far too long. We have suffered humiliation for far too long. Be that as it may, it is certainly not time to throw our hands in the air in resignation. My message to you comrades is: If there was ever a moment in the history of our country where despair was not an option, this is that time. If there was ever a time in the history of our country when we needed to stand up and fight against the forces of oligarchy and authoritarianism, this is that time. And if there was ever a moment in the history of our country when we needed a new vision to bring our people together in the fight for justice, equity and peace, this is that time. A troubled past and a beleaguered present must never be a barrier to our collective determination to build a more humane and more just society.

KALENGWA MINE’S LICENCE SUSPENDED, MOXICO’S DAVIES GETS CITED FOR CONTEMPT

KALENGWA MINE’S LICENCE SUSPENDED, MOXICO’S DAVIES GETS CITED FOR CONTEMPT

The Kitwe High Court has stayed Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited’s Large Scale Exploration Licence number 8584- HQ-LEL while Kalengwa Mineral Processing Limited (KMP) has applied to have Moxico Director Allan Davies cited for contempt of court over resumption of operations at Kalengwa mine despite a ruling that halted the works.

The High Court has granted Kalengwa Mineral Processing Limited leave to commence judicial review proceedings against the decision of the mining committee to terminate Kalengwa Processing Zone Limited’s Large Scale Exploration Licence Number 24401-HQ-LEL.

It has also prohibited and restrained the committee, its officers, agents in the public service, the Zambia Police Service and anyone else from forcefully or ejecting Kalengwa Processing Zone, its workers, servants and agents from the mining area in question.

The Court has also prohibited and restrained the mentioned parties from blocking, obstructing or fettering Kalengwa Processing Zone, its workers, servants and agent’s right of entry and access to the said mining area.

“…and also from howsoever interfering and disturbing with the Applicant’s, it’s workers, servants and agents’ quiet and peaceful operations at the said Mining site pending hearing and final determination of the Judicial Review proceedings and that the status quo prevailing immediately before the aforesaid decision of the Mining Licensing Committee be and is hereby restored and maintained; and the costs hereof and incidental be in the cause,” read court order granting leave for commencement of judicial review proceedings against the Mining committee.

KMP made an application for leave to commence committal proceedings against Moxico Resources Zambia, Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine Limited, Allan Davies, Davies Mwanamoya, Mulondwe Muzungu and Samuel Maango over their decision to start preparations for mine reopening.

Kalengwa Processing Zone asked minister of mines and minerals development Paul Kabuswe in a letter dated 16th September, 2024 to ensure that Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine/Moxico Resources Limited halt their operations as per court order.

Through its legal representation CM Legal Practitioners, KPZ told the minister that it believed that the ministry will take all necessary measures to stay the operations of the Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine/Moxico Resources Limited Licence.

“This is more so because the two licenses were the subject of the Mining License Committee decision that has now been stayed. To do anything to contract will amount to a blatant disregard of a Court Order and Authority. Our Client shall seek redress for such disregard of the Court and commence contempt proceedings to enforce the Order of the lawful Court,” read the letter in part.

In another letter dated 13th September, 2024, Kalengwa Processing Zone, through Mosha and Company wrote the Attorney General saying the company has previously written to the ministry of mines and copied him on the letter dated 24th January 2024 from the director, mining cadastre department at the ministry of mines and minerals development, addressed to the director, Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited.

“The letter, titled “cancellation of all mining and non-mining rights issued within large scale exploration licence no. 8584-HQ-LEL BELONGING TO EURO AFRICA KALENGWA MINES LIMITED,” indicated that the Mining Licence Committee, at its 77th Sitting held on 23rd January 2024, cancelled all mining and non-mining rights within the area covered by Exploration Licence No. 8584-HQ-LEL, purportedly in accordance with the Orders of the Supreme Court under Ref No 2010/HN/117; SCZ/8/237/2012; 76/2016SCZ/050/2016 issued on the dates mentioned in the said letter,” read the letter in part.

Kalengwa Processing Zone reminded the Attorney General that KPZ was declared the rightful owner of a valid Mineral Processing Licence No. 24982-HQ-MPL and the surface rights held via Farm Nos. 31477, 31478, and 31479 in Mufumbwe, by Court Judgment delivered on 23rd September 2023 by His Lordship Judge Musona in the matter Kalengwa Mineral Processing Limited vs Moxico Resources Zambia Ltd; Euro Africa Resources Ltd; Attorney General, 2023/HPC/0282.

“The Court of Appeal refused an application by Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited and Moxico Resources Zambia Limited to stay the decision of the High Court, which is well known to yourselves. It has come to our attention that Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited and Moxico Resources Limited are proceeding with works on the mine area in question and are hiring staff with the intention to commence operations,” read the letter.

Moxico Resources and Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited have however disregarded the court order as they are set to launch operations with a groundbreaking ceremony to be graced by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mines and minerals development director for planning Hapenga Kabeta requested Euro Africa Kalengwa Mines Limited vice chairperson Mulondwe Muzungu in a letter dated 12th September 2024 to prepare a speech for President Hichilema for the groundbreaking, disregarding an order stopping the operations at the mine.

“I wish to advise that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema will grace the ground breaking and launch of Kalengwa Mine operations on Tuesday, 1 October 2024 in the Afternoon,” read the letter in part. “Please prepare a draft speech for His Excellency, highlighting the level of investments, number of projected employees both direct and indirect. You may also show the targeted production levels.”

CHIKANKATA WOMAN GETS RAPED BY 5 MEN

A 37-YEAR-OLD woman of Chikakanta district in Southern Province was on Friday almost left dead by five men after they exchanged turns in raping her at night.

The survivor, Enedy Chizonde had gone to attend her grandmother’s memorial service with two of her friends who she only identified as Bina Mutinta and Bina Mama.

And when they reached there, she found two young men that she knew who were taking alcohol in the company of three other males she did not know.

The men then called her to join them in taking the local brewed beer called Mutete.

And because she knew two of them, Guza Kalinda and Mike Hanzekule who are aged between 19 and 26, she decided to join them in utilising the mouth to down the alcoholic beverage.

But the men however had a plan of marinating her with alcohol so they could later have her.

After they noticed that Chizonde was drunk to the level they wanted, the five men took her to the house of Kalinda around 22:00 hours and ordered her to be quiet if she wanted her life.

They then undressed her and started raping her , beginning with the owner of the house, followed by Hanzekule until she became unconscious.

Her two friends who she went with noticed her absence and began searching for her until they discovered her unconscious and naked body in the house she was abused in.

They then informed family members about what happened who then called and questioned Kalinda on the act as he was mentioned by the survivor, and he accepted having raped her with his four friends.

The family then decided to drag him to the police station to report the matter, but as they were going to Malabo Police Post, the suspect escaped.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka who confirmed the incident said the survivor still reported the matter to the police and complained that the act left her with painful private parts and body pains.

“However Police have issued a medical report form to the victim who has since been rushed to Chikankata mission hospital for treatment, as police have instituted a man hunt for the suspect who escaped and the four others,” said Daka.

Diddy ‘destroyed my life’, says former Bad Boy rapper Shyne

0

Belizean politician and rapper Shyne was signed to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy label in 1998. The 45-year-old, who is now the Leader of the Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives and the leader of the Belize United Democratic Party, was expected to have a fruitful career.

His first album, Shyne, peaked at number 5 on the US Billboard 200 and number 2 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. But as previously reported by Face2Face Africa, his promising career, unfortunately, took a nosedive after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on assault, reckless endangerment, and gun possession charges for a shooting incident at Club New York in New York City in 1999. Three people were injured in the aftermath of the shooting.

Combs was dating Jennifer Lopez at the time, and they were both at the club during the shooting. He was, however, acquitted on gun and bribery charges in connection to the incident, XXL reported. Shyne was deported to his home country in 2009 after serving almost nine years of his sentence despite appeals to allow him to remain in the U.S. He reportedly hadn’t naturalized as an American citizen and was a green card holder at the time.

In a recent interview with Channel 5 News back in his home country of Belize, Shyne, whose real name is Moses Michael Levi Barrow, touched on Combs’ recent arrest and how the embattled music executive “pretty much” sent him to prison.

“When I was an 18-year-old kid, just wanting to do nothing other than make my mother proud and make Belize proud and, do what all of us want to do, be recognized for our talent and take over the world, I was defending him, and he turned around and called witnesses to testify against me,” Shyne said about Combs, per The Independent.

“He pretty much sent me to prison,” Shyne, who was born in Belize and moved to New York to join his mother at a young age, claimed. “That is the context by which you must always describe that relationship. Yes, I forgave. I moved on. But let us not pretend as if I was in Miami for Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

“Let us not lose sight of what the cold, hard facts are. This is not someone who I vacationed with and who he and I enjoyed this great, intimate relationship of brotherhood,” Shyne added. “This is someone who destroyed my life, and who I forgave, and who I moved on, and for the better interest of Belize, because he was in a position at that time to give scholarships and to maybe invest.”

He continued: “I would not deny attempting to bring the investment to Belize and contribution to education to Belize.” Touching on Combs’ current legal woes, the 45-year-old said: “Do I take any joy with what he is going through? Absolutely not. I am different than other people — no one needs to fail for me to succeed.”

Federal agents on Monday arrested Combs at a Manhattan hotel. The 54-year-old, who is currently being held without bail, has been charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has entered a not-guilty plea.

Combs’ lawyer also maintains his innocence amid the serious allegations. Combs is accused of orchestrating “Freak Offs,” described as elaborate, produced sex performances that he directed, recorded, and sometimes participated in.

Combs allegedly drugged victims to keep them compliant for days and used recorded footage as blackmail. Prosecutors also claim he used guns to intimidate and threaten his victims. Combs’ arrest comes about six months after agents with Homeland Security raided his Miami and Los Angeles homes in connection with a federal sex trafficking investigation. The Bad Boy Records founder is also facing multiple sexual assault lawsuits.

The embattled music executive’s recent legal woes started after CNN shared a video of him assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The rapper and music executive had initially denied allegations of rape and abuse from Cassie. But he later issued an apology on social media after the circulation of the video.

Combs and Cassie started dating in 2007 and had an on-and-off relationship for over 10 years. The American music mogul signed Cassie to his label in 2005 when she was 19 and he was 37.

And Cassie, now 38, initially filed a lawsuit in New York federal court alleging that Combs brought her into his “ostentatious, fast-paced, and drug-fueled lifestyle” after she met him. The lawsuit further alleged that Combs was “prone to uncontrollable rage” and physically abused her during their relationship including punching, beating, kicking, and stomping on her.

It alleged that Combs urged Cassie to use drugs and forced her to have sex with other men while he masturbated and filmed. The lawsuit was later dismissed after both parties reached an undisclosed settlement.

US backs 2 permanent seats for African nations on the UN Security Council

0

The United States has announced it will back the addition of two permanent seats for African countries on the United Nations Security Council and the creation of a non-permanent seat for a small island developing nation.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield made the statement during a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, reaffirming President Joe Biden’s earlier call to expand the 15-member body to better reflect the global landscape.

Currently, African nations hold three non-permanent seats on the council, but Thomas-Greenfield argued this is insufficient. “It doesn’t allow African countries to fully deliver the benefit of their knowledge and voices,” she said. “That’s why, in addition to non-permanent membership for African countries, the U.S. supports creating two permanent seats for Africa on the council.” She emphasized that the move aligns with the goals of African nations and is a matter of justice.

However, the U.S. opposes giving veto power to the new permanent African members, a privilege that has long been a point of contention. According to Thomas-Greenfield, the veto has made the Security Council “dysfunctional” and weakened its effectiveness in maintaining global peace and security. The stance highlights limits in the level of influence Washington is willing to extend to other countries. While Security Council resolutions are legally binding, they are frequently disregarded by those they target.

Calls to reform the council have been growing, with many nations agreeing that nearly 80 years after the U.N. was founded following World War II, the body’s structure should be updated to better represent the modern world. But how to achieve such reform remains a point of deep division.

The Security Council has not altered its structure since its founding in 1945. It currently consists of 10 rotating, non-permanent members elected for two-year terms and five permanent members — the U.S., Russia, China, the U.K. and France — all of whom wield veto power. The use of vetoes has led to paralysis in addressing major global conflicts, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Efforts to reshape the council began as early as 1979. In 2005, world leaders called for the council to be “more broadly representative, efficient and transparent.” Yet, deep divisions continue to stall progress. That same year, the U.N. General Assembly shelved three competing proposals for reform. The General Assembly must approve any changes to the Security Council’s structure.

In September 2022, Biden endorsed expanding the number of both permanent and non-permanent seats on the council, specifically supporting permanent spots for Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, as well as for Germany, Japan, and India.

During her address, Thomas-Greenfield did not mention Biden’s previous pledge regarding Latin America and the Caribbean, but a senior U.S. official, speaking anonymously, reaffirmed the administration’s continued support for permanent seats for these regions, in addition to Africa.

Responding to calls for more diverse representation on the council, Thomas-Greenfield announced U.S. backing for an additional rotating seat for small island developing nations. She noted that these nations — which number 39 and are home to 65 million people across more than 1,000 islands — provide critical insights into global security, particularly on the impact of climate change.

“These 39 states are not a monolith. But each has critical insights on a range of international peace and security issues,” Thomas-Greenfield said. “That includes, notably, the impact of climate change.”

Looking ahead, the U.S. plans to draft a resolution to reform the council. Thomas-Greenfield acknowledged the challenges, particularly the lack of consensus among the U.N.’s 193 member states.
“I’m an optimist. But I’m also a realist,” she said. “And the reality is this: no amount of conversation will ever get us to a place of total consensus on this issue.”

While the road to reform may be long, the ambassador stressed that action is necessary to move beyond the gridlock that has defined the council for decades.

Nicki Minaj Seemingly Calls Diddy Jay-Z’s “BFF” While Blasting Steve Stoute’s TIDAL Claims

Nicki’s not done with this debacle…
You probably already witness how Nicki Minaj engaged in various rants against Jay-Z and company over the past two weeks or so. These stem from the Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl halftime show, since she defended Lil Wayne, accused Hov of being a hater, and even talked smack about her TIDAL deal with him that she allegedly never saw proper payment for. But Roman isn’t done yet.

On Saturday (September 21), she saw how Steve Stoute and others have tried to disprove her claims and paint her to be a liar. Then, the Trinidadian MC went scorched Earth and even mocked Jay for his proximity to Diddy amid the latter’s legal scandal.

“I love knowing you’re always thinking about me,” Nicki Minaj shaded to a mystery target to start things off on Saturday afternoon (Eastern Time). “I’m such a tease. the morning of every show you pop up trying to taste my pussy. But no. You may not. Ugly.”

Afterwards, she went into alleged details of the TIDAL fallout. “I received a call advising tidal was sold & they made no money on the deal so all they could offer me was a million dollars. but wait, there’s more! The lawyer advised that Desirat advised him that I HAD TO SIGN THE AGREEMENT IN 24 HOURS IF I WANTED THE 1MM or the ‘offer’ was off the table. Listen to the end of ‘Fractions’ for what my response was.”

“So Barbz, thank you for supporting something I was a part of,” Nicki Minaj continued in another tweet. “I love you. But I was scammed & offered a million dollars to be silenced. I declined. The grace of God is sufficient. I didn’t need their hush money. #GagCityLosAngeles TONIGHT & TMRW NIGHT! My documentary was also…” “lol. Word,” she responded to a Shade Room report of TIDAL partners’ payouts. “One of the blogs that they ‘reportedly’ have lots of control of. Why is my photo there? Oh. ‘Reportedly’ huh? Lol yall im rlly laughing @ how ppl who aren’t rlly smart always believe they are out smarting smart ppl. No, it’s just that we know karma spins. It rlly spins.” “Every day a new man pushing 60 years of age gets fingered in the bussy then made to come on this internet & lie on me,” Nicki added.

Finally, Nicki Minaj seemed to dismiss Steve Stoute’s claims that she just didn’t sign the proper TIDAL paperwork. In her final series of tweets (at press time), she referenced the Diddy scandal.

“They gotta keep the conversation on me so that no one asks about these charges against their BFF. I mean it seems the 30 year old tea here is FAR from stale. Patterns. Yet. SAS, UGLY ALIEN, STOUT, dk breath, etc all talking about Onika ? Why they talking bout Oniqua?!?!?!” “Worried about the tea of a 15 year old child who was railroaded but no comments on the tea & baby oil that’s been going on for decades & as recent as months ago?!?!!! If 15 year olds need to be held accountable & told they can’t ever move past their past, then what about the 30 year olds who groomed & groomed, sat by & was silent, etc. oh right. Let’s keep the blogs focused on Oniqua. Short & Stoute dk don’t wanna talk bout him friend dem??! LMFAO.”

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAS FAILED,THE OPPOSITION MPS SEEKING TO HELP HIM MUST EAT QUIETLY WITHOUT DISPARAGING PRESIDENT LUNGU

Lusaka- Sunday 22nd September 2024

During his visit to Eastern Province to attend the Malaila Traditional Ceremony in Mambwe, President Hakainde Hichilema was received by among other, by two Patriotic Front Members of Parliament; Chipangali MP, Andrew Lubusha, and Chama South MP, Davison Mungandu.

Sadly the two MPs, especially Hon. Davison Mungandu used the opportunity to disparage the previous government and President Edgar Lungu.

Mungandu even dared to false state that “loadshedding would have been worse under the previous President”.

We must warn the two MPs that they are digging their own political grave by the display of this cheap and opportunistic stunts.

We urge the MPs to eat quietly or obtain favours from President Hichilema without engaging in this shameful conduct.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAS FAILED

We need to remind the two MPs of the obvious that Zambians have witnessed and experienced, that President Hakainde Hichilema has failed, and lamentably so.

In the last three years, President Hichilema has literally run the country aground.

The UPND Government found $3.1billion foreign reserves, and 1.5million metric tonnes of national strategic maize grain reserves.

He found food prices at low prices such as mealie-meal (K120), fuel (K17 per litre), exchange rate (K17 to a $1) and cheaper electricity.

The Patriotic Front built schools, colleges, universities, youth training centres, health centres, clinics, mini and district hospitals.
The Patriotic Front also built roads, and bridges.

The previous government  built and upgraded power stations increasing generation capacity from 1,600 megawatts to 3,770 Megawatts.
Some of the major infrastructure development were funded by foreign loans.

The Patriotic Front Government built Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Simon Mwamba Kapwepwe International Airport and Harrywaanga Nkumbula International Airport.

In 2011, the PF found an external debt of $2.8billion and by 2021, the debt was $11.9billion and domestic debt stood at K178billion.

This means that the PF borrowed $9.1billion in the period of ten years.

But the debt now stands $14.7 billion and domestic debt stands at K236 billion.

At this rate, the UPND Government, is accumulating debt at a far faster rate than any previous government has ever done. Sadly no one can see what this appetite for foreign loans is going.

Currently Zambia is experiencing the worst load-shedding of electricity and citizens are being subjected to power cuys that is going on for days.

As a result of extended load-shedding, communities are experiencing a huge water crisis.

The country has experienced disease outbreaks, the worst cost of living crisis, a volatile exchange rate market, and an economic down-turn for three years in a row.

It is clear that the country is facing a failed economy and systemic failure of government whose only safe solution and in order to save the country, is to vote out President Hichilema in 2026.

So we advise the two MPs and others seeking to work with President Hichilema to do so quietly than to heap praises based on falsehoods, that expose their utter desperation to obtain favours from his government.

Kabimba’s Hallucinations are of a Man Drunk on Pocket Change- Dr. Catharine Frazha Benkele Mulaisho

Kabimba’s Hallucinations are of a Man Drunk on Pocket Change

By Dr. Catharine Frazha Benkele Mulaisho

We love UPND, but we detest and hate bootlickers and all those who stand against democracy, short-sighted individuals whose vision extends only to the length of their trouser pockets. Wynter Kabimba, once a fierce critic of President Hakainde Hichilema, has now become his most shameless apologist, spouting nonsensical claims that are nothing short of a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

In his latest public performance, Kabimba has suggested that President Hichilema could delay the 2026 elections for 20 years if he wanted to, further illustrating just how far Kabimba has drifted from any form of political integrity. What’s clear is that Kabimba is no longer speaking for the Zambian people, but for the few breadcrumbs that have been thrown his way by the Hichilema administration.

*A Useful Idiot in Opposition*

Kabimba’s recent political realignment is not a surprise to those who have followed his career. He has become the quintessential “useful idiot,” a term that fits him perfectly. With his belly clearly full from the crumbs of power and influence he has been fed, Kabimba has sold out whatever remains of his political credibility. This is a man who once positioned himself as a champion for the people, only to now speak with the voice of a man whose principles have been auctioned off to the highest bidder.

For Kabimba to suggest that President Hichilema could delay elections for 20 years and to dismiss the public outcry against Article 52(6) as “mischief” or “absurdity” is not only reckless but patently ridiculous. His claim that the President’s comments were misunderstood is laughable. Kabimba would have us believe that the entire Zambian population is either deaf or too intellectually inferior to grasp the President’s words. In reality, Kabimba knows full well what he is doing—deliberately distorting the truth to shield his newfound benefactor from criticism.

*A Long History of Betrayal*

This is not the first time Kabimba has betrayed his own allies for personal gain. His political history is littered with instances where he has turned his back on those closest to him when it suited his own ambitions. Whether it was his former comrades in the Patriotic Front or his own short-lived opposition movement, Kabimba has consistently proven that his loyalty is for sale. The moment a carrot is dangled in front of him, he abandons ship with no regard for the people or principles he once claimed to stand for.

It is this kind of opportunism that has left Kabimba politically irrelevant and morally bankrupt. His sudden shift to defend President Hichilema after years of fierce opposition exposes the emptiness of his convictions. Kabimba doesn’t care about Zambia; he cares about his own comfort and standing, and if that means selling out the Zambian people for “pocket change,” he will do it without hesitation.

*Kabimba’s Attempt to Reframe Hichilema’s Words*

Let’s be clear: President Hichilema’s recent comments in Parliament about the potential for delaying elections were a direct challenge to Zambia’s democracy. To even hint at the possibility of extending his time in office beyond the constitutionally mandated term is an insult to the Zambian electorate. Kabimba’s attempt to reframe the President’s words as merely a discussion about “mischief” or “absurdity” in the law is a weak and transparent effort to cover up an alarming statement.

It doesn’t take a legal expert to see the danger in Hichilema’s comments. The fact that Kabimba, a former Justice Minister, is trying to downplay the implications of Article 52(6) shows how far he is willing to go to protect his newfound position as a useful tool in Hichilema’s machinery. Kabimba’s claim that Hichilema’s words were taken out of context is an insult to the intelligence of every Zambian who heard the President speak.

*The Hypocrisy of Kabimba’s Position*

For a man who once led the charge against the very same constitution he now seeks to defend, Kabimba’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. When it was politically convenient for him, he railed against constitutional loopholes and fought for electoral reforms. Now that he finds himself on the side of power, he is more than willing to dismiss these very same concerns as mere “mischief” or “absurdity.” This is not the behavior of a principled politician, but of a man who speaks with his stomach rather than his head.

Kabimba’s descent into political irrelevance is as tragic as it is predictable. His alignment with Hichilema is not based on any ideological convergence, but on sheer opportunism. The man who once prided himself on being a voice for the people has now become just another puppet in Hichilema’s political theater, parroting lines that he himself knows are untrue.

Surround yourself with people who want to help you, tolerate the opposition, chiefs advise HH

CHIEFS in Eastern Province, represented by the Provincial representative of the Royal Council of Chiefs, chief Mnukwa have reassured President Hakainde Hichilema of their support towards implementing government agendas.

The chief made this reasureance yesterday when President Hakainde Hichilema held a dialogue with him and other chiefs before officiating at the Malaila traditional ceremony of the Kunda speaking people of Mambwe district in Eastern province.

Present in the meeting were 16 chiefs, of which eight were from outside the Province before the arrival of Chief Mpenzeni who added the number to 17.

“What you want to achieve for this country is great. so surround yourself with people who want to help you and don’t divert from what you wanted to do,” said chief Mnukwa.

The traditional leader appreciated the President for his straight forward nature, adding that the traditional leaders are ready to help and support his government in implementing developmental projects to the people.

“I also want to encourage your ministers to work hard too. Tolerate the opposition a bit, but they must be responsible as well. They are also our sons, so when they come, we should be planning with them on how to help you develop this country and not to pull you down,” chief Mnukwa said.

He further requested for a University in Chipata district, among other things including a good road network, stating that the President himself is one who came from the village and attended university, therefore understands the power that education carries.

And responding to the Chief’s sentiments, President Hichilema was delighted to hear messages regarding national unity, peace, security and stability coming through from the traditional leaders.

He said government is currently planning to set up Universities in six provinces in the country that have never had any.

“I can confirm with you that this your government will deliver six public Universities to provinces that have never had before.  We are looking at numbers too and it will be done. These provinces will include, Eastern, Northern, North Western, Western, Southern and Luapula provinces,” said President Hichilema.

While assuring the traditional leaders of his commitment and focus on development, the President called for continued and boosted support from the chiefs towards the ministers and Member’s of Parliament, adding that most of them are their own sons and daughter’s of their soil.

Lungu ready to lecture Hichilema on democracy

Lungu ready to lecture Hichilema on democracy

FORMER president Edgar Lungu says he’s ready to meet his successor Hakainde Hichilema, to teach him a lesson or two on democracy.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/26dbbkZQwFzHLU7S/?mibextid=oFDknk

According to Lungu, the New Dawn administration has taken the country’s democracy to its grave by harassing members of the PF and other opposition parties.

Lungu said he’s readiness to meet President Hichilema was in response to the several calls made by various stakeholders for them to meet.

He was speaking during a central committee meeting convened by one slice of the former ruling party held in Lusaka yesterday.

According to a speech delivered by his right hand man Raphael Nakacinda, Lungu asked that President Hichilema restores democracy and the rule of law in the country.

“The meeting was chaired by him and in his opening remarks, president Lungu indicated that he had received requests from various stakeholders including the church, urging him to meet or accept intimation of dialogue from President Hakainde Hichilema,” Nakacinda said.

He indicated that Lungu was willing to meet President Hichilema if; the talks and dialogue will be about restoring democracy.

Nakacinda said his boss suggested that before the parties converse about the dissonance, their discussions should be bordered on cessation of the harassment of the opposition in general as well as members of the Patriotic Front.

“Restore the rule of law; he (Lungu) emphasized that he holds no personal grudges and the purpose of such a meeting will be about restoring democracy and the rule of law,”Nakacinda said.

He indicated that Lungu complained about purported destabilization of the PF by the State.

“President Lungu bemoaned the aggressive and concerted attacks waged against the PF driven by the State. And the determined quest by the State to decimate the party by replacing legitimate office bearers with imposters, and surrogates,” Nakacinda said.

“He said this was an attack on democracy and the rule of law. He states that the subsequent actions by the State to bar or prevent the PF from participating in  by- elections through the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) deeply undermines democracy and destroys the multi-party character of Zambia.”

Nakacinda also disclosed that the central committee has appointed an ad hoc committee to scrutinize the PF’s association with political alliances.

He said the ad hoc committee has been ordered to analyze the PF’s affiliation with the Unite Kwacha Alliance (UKA) and set terms and conditions for party’s partnership with the alliance.

“The committee is also expected to propose conditions that rules of engagement to be adopted to guide such partnerships including the UKA alliance. The committee’s reports and its recommendations will be tabled to an urgent central committee meeting that has been called in the next two weeks, to resolve the matter and other urgent issues,”Nakacinda said.

And in sticking to PF’s regional playbook as a political strategy, Nakachinda asked supporters who hail outside from what his party has identified as Zambezi region, to register as voters enmasse.

“The central committee called on the PF members and Zambians to participate in the current voter registration and mobile NRC issuance exercise being undertaken in a biased manner. We know that they have heavily sponsored and undertaking activities in the Zambezi region hoping that they will have an advantage of numbers,” said Nakacinda.

Whoever wrote Hichilema’s parley speech is an enemy of Zambians says Mpundu

Whoever wrote Hichilema’s parley speech is an enemy of Zambians says Mpundu

DESPITE President Hakainde Hichilema announcing government’s short and long term solutions to end load shedding in his speech at parliament last Friday, Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu says the energy issue was not tackled efficiently.

Reacting to the Presidential speech in the august house, Mpundu noted that whoever wrote the speech for President Hichilema is an enemy of the Zambian people.

He said the President did not give out solutions instead, only lamented over the cause of load shedding which is the drought.

Mpundu said during President Hichilema’s time in opposition,he gave Zambians all the solutions on load shedding and wondered where those solutions had gone.

“Whoever wrote that speech for the President is an enemy of the Zambian people. Had we allowed the President to speak as a man we have known over the years, a man who has presented himself with solutions, that speech would have been completely different.”

“Madam speaker, where I come from, we say, when an elephant dies the story in the village is that elephant. And the elephant in the room in as far as this country is concerned today is the energy crisis. If you look at this speech on page 10 and 11,  the President speaks to the energy crisis. Sadly, the President laments over the challenge of drought as being the reason over the challenge we have today.”

“The fact today is that the people in the communities are in despair. Contrary to the statement given by so many government officials that we are having 21 hours of load shedding,” lamented Mpundu.

He stated that there are communities that are going through five days without power and could not even do their businesses.

“If the government presented itself as promised they would have invested in power.
We should stop hiding in the name of drought and climate change as a reason for the energy crisis. It is the leadership that is wrong. How do you continue exporting 500 megawatts of power when your people are going for days without power, your companies are closing down, your small businesses are shutting down, patients are dying in hospitals but you are exporting power,” he said.

“Three years down the line, had the UPND been serious they would have invested in alternative sources of power like solar power plants that take only seven to 10 months to be constructed.”

Government not in competition with opposition – Hichilema

A COLOURFUL Induna led ceremony yesterday unwrapped in the scorching sun of Mambwe district in Eastern province, as the Kunda speaking people all gathered at the Lubaneni Arena in anticipation of the Malaila Traditional Ceremony.

As the ceremony went down together with the sun in Malambo constituency, the community members performed a demonstrative act on how the tribe’s hunters strive to kill lions that terrorise the residents, and later present the dead animal to the people for a defeat celebration demonstrated through dances joined by the Chief.

The celebration then becomes the climax of the ceremony.

Despite the ceremony being a history and culture preservation event, this year’s event wrote its own history as President Hakainde Hichilema who officiated the event became the second president in the history of the ceremony to attend it after late former president Rupiah Banda.

Also, for the first time in his over 40 years of ruling, the Ngoni King, Paramount Chief Mpenzeni also attended the ceremony for the first time.

16 other local chiefs were also present, two from Malawi, and other government officials.

Speaking during the ceremony, Senior Chief Nsefu of the Kunda speaking people appealed to government and stakeholders to support initiatives that can help sustain the South Luangwa National park in the land, which is not only a crucial symbol of the tribes heritage, but also a source of livelihood survival for the people.

But, he also feared the present challenges and life endangering risks of human-wildlife conflicts, calling on government to strengthen support in the department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) through the provision of adequate transportation and resources to swiftly respond to incidents.

“In addition, I request that consideration be given to compensating families who suffer loss of life or property due to Wildlife attacks. Also, I urge government to address the state of the Mfuwe – Malama road which is in need of urgent  rehabilitation,” said the chief.

While thanking government for its drought relief programmes such as the Cash for Work innovative, the Chief also called for the increment of the allocation under the farmer input support Programme (FISP) stating that Agriculture remains the back bone of the local economy.

Responding to the chief’s requests, President Hakainde Hichilema said his government has committed to listening to the community that elected it into office because it serves it, with a mandate of delivering and working upon its needs.

The President said government will work with the traditional leaders, civil societies and the church to ensure the reverse of the food supply chain from where it used to buy the food in good seasons, taking it back to the buying points so that people can access food closer to their communities.

He added that if the supply chain and distributing processes are not working well, the community members and traditional leaders must ensure to report the mole in the process to any nearby public authority so the problem can be corrected.

“Government is not in competition with the opposition, traditional leaders, or churches. But instead, in partnership in serving our people better, we need to consolidate our relationship. I want to thank those joining this government for reuniting our country. On the platform of unity, love and support for each other, we will achieve stronger results in the developmental arena,” President Hichilema said.

The President further emphasised on the need and importance of cultural heritage, stating that, attaining high education qualifications does not necessitate one to abandon their culture, as we are who we are because of where we come from.

“I am delighted to be part of the Malaila 2024 wonderful ceremony and part of the reason I am happy, yes is the Heritage, dances, and the narration of the history, but am also carrying with me the message of peace. These traditional ceremonies must be peaceful, no teargas or fights,” said the President.

The Kunda speaking people migrated to Zambia from the Democratic Republic of Congo years ago.

This year’s theme for the ceremony was, ‘Promoting environmental sustainability and food security through traditional and cultural Heritage.’

DR. MUMBA ENDORSES MUKOBELA

By WAGON MEDIA

Former Republican Vice President Dr. Nevers Mumba has endorsed Matero Constituency hopeful Evans Mukobela, supporting his mission to serve the people of Matero.

Dr. Mumba, a respected figure in Zambian politics, backed Mukobela, praising his dedication and vision for the area.

Mukobela, who is a determined aspirant for the Matero parliamentary seat, has pledged to tackle key issues such as poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and high youth unemployment. His campaign centers on bringing development that will “put smiles on the faces of Matero residents.”

Dr. Mumba lauded Mukobela for his commitment, describing him as a “leader with a heart for the people.”

He added, “Evans represents a new wave of leaders who are ready to prioritize the needs of their communities, and his passion for Matero is exactly what this constituency needs.

He has the vision, energy, and integrity to serve the people of Matero with distinction.”

Expressing gratitude for the endorsement, Mukobela emphasized his resolve to serve Matero’s diverse population.

“Dr. Mumba’s support reinforces my dedication to work tirelessly for Matero,” he said.

“This isn’t just about an election, but about delivering real solutions that improve lives. I’m committed to addressing the challenges our community faces and working hand in hand with residents to create lasting change.”

Mukobela also pledged to take action even before being elected, vowing to initiate community projects aimed at uplifting living standards.

“I don’t need a title to start working for Matero,” he stated.

“I am already collaborating with local leaders and organizations to identify immediate interventions because my commitment is not tied to winning an election; it’s about making a difference right now.”

Mukobela’s vision for Matero is to transform the constituency into a thriving and self-reliant community with opportunities for all.

He said, “I see a Matero where everyone has access to quality healthcare, clean water, and well-maintained roads. We will build recreational facilities and skills training centers for our youth, and empower women through targeted programs. Together, we can create a Matero that is safe, vibrant, and full of opportunity.”

Mukobela has actively engaged with stakeholders, including youth groups, women’s organizations, and small business owners, to better understand their challenges. His proposed initiatives include establishing skills training centers to boost employability among young people and supporting small businesses to spur economic growth.

Residents have responded positively to Mukobela’s proactive approach, with many hopeful about his potential to bring change.

“He’s always on the ground, listening to us and addressing our concerns, and we believe he’s the leader we need,” said a local market vendor.

Another resident added, “Mukobela is a breath of fresh air—he’s genuinely concerned about our issues, and he’s already making a difference.”

With Dr. Mumba’s endorsement and growing grassroots support, Mukobela’s campaign continues to build momentum ahead of the election. His promise to “put Matero first” resonates with a community eager for change and new leadership.

Man says he identifies as an ambulance and has had s£xual relationships with cars since he was 15

A man who identifies as an ambulance and has “s£xual relationships” with them has told of their adventures with the large vehicles.

Dominik Chvátal, from Prague, Czech Republic, 22, says he identifies as both non-binary and an ambulance and enjoys polygamous relationships with the response vehicles.

According to the petrol pump worker, his obsession with ambulances began at age 13, but by 15 his fascination turned s£xual after becoming aroused by the vehicles’ “several openings”.

However, Dominik, who has been diagnosed with objectophilia, only exclusively dates the Mercedes brands of ambulances, as he is most “attracted” to their appearance, including their “wheels and lights”.

Objectophilia is a condition in which a person experiences romantic or s£xual feelings towards inanimate objects and it can involve different degrees of involvement with the item in question.

Dominik now goes by the name “Sanitka Mercedes”. Sanitka is the Czech word for ambulance.

“I chose the name myself. Because that’s how I feel. I am a car trapped in human form” said Sanitka.

He also spoke of his feelings for ambulance vans, adding that for him, it was more than s£x, as he had fallen in “love” with the vehicle.

He said: “Actually, it’s everything in terms of appearance, from wheels to lights. It’s love.

“And it is possible to have s£x. The ambulance has many places where you can have a sexual act.

“It has several openings, the exhaust, the door handles, the front, and a lot in the chassis too.”

He added: “We talk about everything that is normally talked about, it depends on what topic comes to mind. We talk like people do.”

He made it clear that his attraction was solely to Mercedes-made ambulances, and while he may admire other makes and cars from time to time, it was strictly platonic.

“I love only Mercedes emergency vehicles, all Mercedes ambulances,” said Sanitka.

“Volkswagens are ugly and mainly hurt Mercedes cars. They laugh when something hurts or bothers them.”

For those questioning the legality of Santika’s behaviour, he opened up about it being risky business.

He said: “I got into trouble often.

“One time paramedics rushed me, and despite my diagnosis, they called the police and I was taken to talk to a psychiatrist.”

Sanitka has since learned to be discrete, even striking up an agreement with one company that occasionally allows him to indulge.

He said: “They don’t even know about me anymore, that I walk around their depots.

“There is one company that has Mercedes ambulances and they directly allow me to go to them and have sex with Mercedes ambulances.”

Sanitka lamented about the limits of his love and awaits a time when marriage to ambulances will be made legal.

“Unfortunately, it is not possible in the Czech Republic,” he said.

“But perhaps it is in America. In Czechia, they say that America is a land of unlimited possibilities.”

Speaking on his family’s reaction to his relationships, he added: “My family reconciled after a long time and my friends understand and support me.

“I have no problem going public with it. It is harmless. I am not harming anyone.”

MINISTER COMMENDS ZAMBIAN MANUFACTURERS FOR RESILIENCE DURING ENERGY CRISIS

Lusaka, Saturday (September 21, 2024)

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, has paid tribute to manufacturers in Zambia for their resilience during the climate-induced energy crisis.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Crusivia Hichikumba, Permanent Secretary – Industrialisation and Investment at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, during the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) Gala and Awards Ceremony in Lusaka, the Cabinet Minister observed that the event marked the culmination of a month-long series of activities aimed at promoting and recognizing excellence in manufacturing.

Mr. Mulenga congratulated ZAM for successfully hosting the event and for their efforts throughout the year.

“It is time to celebrate companies that, like other sectors, have shown resilience and innovation in the face of challenges,” he stated.

The Commerce Minister emphasized the importance of promotional activities in navigating the current energy crisis and other obstacles facing the sector.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the manufacturing sector.

“The government, through the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, is dedicated to providing support and maintaining a favorable business environment. We are committed to fostering a conducive investment climate that allows the sector to flourish and grow into competitive enterprises,” Mulenga said.

Mr. Mulenga also highlighted the exceptional performance of companies producing high-quality products and services that have gained recognition both regionally and internationally.

“This evening is a momentous occasion to honor those who have excelled in value addition and have set new benchmarks in the industry,” he noted.

The Minister called on agencies, the private sector, and partners to continue their robust support for investment, trade, and industrial development.

“Partnerships are crucial for driving change and ensuring sustainable growth in the manufacturing sector,” he said.

At the same same function, USAID Southern Africa Regional Director, Mary Gounder, urged Zambian manufacturers to increase exports by taking advantage of opportunities such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to the USA.

Ms. Gounder emphasized that by increasing exports, manufacturers create opportunities for Zambian firms to excel in the international market.

She expressed hope that soon, USAID can proudly say that Zambian products are successfully exported to the US and South Africa.

She highlighted that USAID’s focus is on ensuring companies improve their quality and production levels.

The USAID Official said this, in turn, will make their products more competitive, allowing them to generate more revenue and create numerous jobs.

Ms. Gounder mentioned that USAID has several initiatives aimed at connecting Zambian companies with US entities, providing technical assistance, and offering information and awareness on the requirements to enter the US market.

She stressed that increasing exports is not just about sending products to South Africa or the US; it’s about tapping into growth potential and ensuring that Zambian companies can compete on a global scale.

Ms. Gounder also thanked the Zambia Association of Manufacturers for their collaboration and efforts in making these initiatives a reality.

Meanwhile, Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) President Ashu Sagar expressed gratitude to the Association’s partners and stakeholders, particularly highlighting the contributions of USAID and First Quantum Minerals.

“USAID has been a critical partner in developing capacity within the manufacturing industry,” Mr. Sagar noted.

He also praised First Quantum Minerals for their substantial local purchases, amounting to $1.6 billion, with 44% sourced from Zambian-owned companies.

“These proactive steps demonstrate what true partnerships are about – driving change and being part of the solution,” he added.

Mr. Sagar underscored the importance of these partnerships in building a foundation for future growth and innovation.

“Without our sponsors and well-wishers, we would not see the driving agenda for success in our industry. Together, we have forged partnerships that will ensure market access becomes a reality,” he said.

As the manufacturing sector in Zambia continues to face challenges such as power supply issues and regulatory hurdles, Sagar remains optimistic.

“The future of manufacturing in Zambia is bright. We must be focused on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. We have been challenged by power, regulations, and market dynamics, but our resilience and innovation will drive us forward,” he said.

This is contained in a statement issued by ZAM Chief Executive Officer Muntanga Lindunda.

FQM COMMITS TO $1.6 BILLION LOCAL PROCUREMENT, PARTNERS WITH ZAM

Lusaka, Sunday (September 22, 2024)

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has announced substantial local purchases amounting to $1.6 billion, with 44% sourced from Zambian-owned companies.

Jed Goldstein, FQM’s Head of Infrastructure, stated that the mining giant remains committed to increasing local procurement and formalizing its partnership with the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM).

He said the initiative aims to enhance the capacity of Zambian manufacturers to supply the mining sector at a global standard.

Mr. Goldstein highlighted that while the majority of their procurement is from companies registered in Zambia, a significant portion is still sourced from companies with minority Zambian shareholding.

He emphasized the company’s goal to increase its local spending over the next few years.

“We believe that ZAM is a key entity to help us ensure that Zambian manufacturers can supply the mining sector at a global standard,” he said.

“Zambia is an incredibly large copper producer, and with copper being a critical mineral of the future, there should be an impactful and meaningful value chain associated with copper here in Zambia,” he added.

Mr. Goldstein noted that FQM aims to turn Zambia into a mineral processing hub, contributing to the local economy and ensuring that suppliers can meet the demands of Zambia’s mines.

He said the effort aligns with the vision of producing 3 million tons of copper annually, as outlined by President Hakainde Hichilema.

“We are excited to formalize our partnership with ZAM and work together to achieve this vision. It has been a pleasure to participate in Zambia Manufacturing Month, and we hope everyone has a wonderful time celebrating the achievements of the manufacturing sector,” he said.

He made these remarks during the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) Gala and Awards Ceremony in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) Chief Executive Officer, Muntanga Lindunda, announced that the event marked the grand finale of its 14th Manufacturers Month with a celebratory event dedicated to honoring outstanding achievements in the manufacturing sector.

Ms. Lindunda reflected on the journey of resilience and transformation within Zambia’s largest manufacturing sector.

Ms. Lindunda emphasized that the evening was dedicated to recognizing those who have made tireless efforts to innovate and lead the way toward a more competitive and sustainable future.

“What you see today reflects a journey we have all been part of – a journey of growth, resilience, and transformation,” she added.

Ms. Lindunda expressed her gratitude to the partners and stakeholders who have supported the event and contributed to the success of Manufacturers Month.

“I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to our partners and stakeholders for making this month successful. Your support has been invaluable in getting us to this day,” she said.

Qwabe Twins still virgins at 26

Award-winning South Africa music duo, the Qwabe Twins, want young female musicians to follow in their footsteps and embrace their cultures, including preserving their virginity.

The twins, whose hit video Hamba has amassed over 22-million views on YouTube, were among throngs of maidens who attended the annual reed dance at the weekend.

They were born and bred in Nonoti under the KwaDukuza local municipality, KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The culturally significant ceremony was held at the royal palace of Enyokeni, about 90 minutes away from the rural town of Nongoma, north of the province. Nongoma is also considered the heart of the Zulu kingdom.

“We are motivating and showing women in our age that you can be a known musician, but also preserve your virginity,” the 26-year-old identical twins said.

“The reed dance is very important, and it has played a pivotal role in our lives.”
One of the well-known cultural highlights of KwaZulu-Natal, the long-standing event marked 40 years since it was resurrected by the late AmaZulu King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuZulu.

In order to symbolise their purity, thousands of Zulu maidens with bare breasts and short beaded skirts gather in a single location known as the indawo engcwele (holy place) for the ceremony.
It is considered a celebratory occasion showcasing the rich heritage of the Zulu nation. The Qwabe Twins also took issue with insufficient transport for scores of maidens who were left behind and could not attend the annual event.

“It was very disappointing and hurtful to see many maidens who had been undergoing virginity testing in their own areas throughout the year in preparation for the reed dance left behind. They were looking forward to attending the main event. But they were left behind because of the inadequate transport.”

The event, commonly referred to as Umkhosi Womhlanga (reed), derives its name from the reeds that grow on the riverbed.
After passing the virginity test, the women carry the reeds in procession to the Zulu King, MisuZulu KaZwelithini.

The method, presided over by older women, involves examining the girl’s hymen to see whether it is still intact.
As the maidens prepare to hand over the reed to the king, it is believed that any woman who was no longer a virgin would have her reed bend.

The virginity test has remained a contested terrain in public discourse, with women’s rights organisations pushing for it to be banned.

The organisations claim, among other things, that it is torture and a violation of women’s rights. Others say the practice is also discriminatory to women who are no longer virgins, some whose virginity was forcefully taken away through forced sex.

Trump-backed governor candidate denies ‘black Nazi’ post

0

A Republican candidate for governor in North Carolina has insisted he will not exit the race after it was reported that he made controversial comments on a porn website more than a decade ago.

Mark Robinson characterised the CNN report, which alleged that he had referred to himself as a “black Nazi” on an adult forum, as “salacious tabloid lies”.

He has been under pressure from state Republicans and members of Donald Trump’s campaign team to quit the race in the swing state, according to anonymous sources quoted by the Carolina Journal newspaper.

Trump himself did not refer to the report during his comments at a Thursday night event in Washington about antisemitism.

Robinson, 56, is a former furniture manufacturer who was elected to be the state’s first black lieutenant governor in 2020.

He won the nomination to run for governor in March after receiving an endorsement from Trump, who called him “Martin Luther King on steroids”.

Robinson’s race is in a potentially pivotal swing state which Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is hoping to wrest from the Republicans.

Robinson to take on Josh Stein in North Carolina race

According to the CNN report published on Thursday, Robinson used to visit a porn website from 2008-12 called Nude Africa, with the username “minisoldr”.

According to CNN, minisoldr posted about enjoying watching “tranny” porn, adding: “Yeah I’m a ‘perv’ too!”

The BBC has not verified the CNN report.

In 2021, Robinson refused to apologise after he was criticised for saying that children in schools should not be learning about “transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth”.

In a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, as the CNN story was being published, he denied wrongdoing.

“Let me reassure you, the things you will see in that story, those are not the words of Mark Robinson,” he said.

“We are staying in this race. We are in it to win it.”

He said he was the victim of a “high-tech lynching” by his white Democratic opponent, Josh Stein.

Stein’s campaign said in a statement that “North Carolinians already know Mark Robinson is completely unfit to be governor”.

Opinion polls already suggest Stein, a Harvard-educated lawyer who is currently North Carolina’s attorney general, has a firm lead in the race.

The North Carolina Republican Party defended Robinson in a statement, saying “the Left” was “trying to demonise him via personal attacks”.

Trump himself did not address the controversy during Thursday night’s comments to the Israeli-American Council National Summit, in which he vowed to “stop the toxic poison of antisemitism from spreading all over America and all over the world”.

He bemoaned the lack of support he said he was receiving from Jewish voters, saying if he failed to win the election, “the Jewish people would really have a lot to do with that”.

The Harris campaign posted a video on social media reminding voters of Trump’s past praise for Robinson.

The deadline for withdrawing from the governor contest was on Thursday evening, as postal ballots go into the mail on Friday. Early voting in the state begins in less than a month.

Recent polling in North Carolina shows Harris and Trump effectively tied among likely voters.

The Tar Heel State has been a Republican stronghold, with only one Democratic presidential nominee winning there in the last 20-plus years.

Trump narrowly beat Joe Biden in North Carolina four years ago by less than 2%.
Democrats have campaigned heavily in the state this election season.

Kentucky sheriff killed judge in his chambers following an argument, police say

0

Investigators are trying to determine what motivated a Kentucky sheriff to allegedly shoot and kill a district judge after the two had an argument inside the judge’s chambers, according to Kentucky State Police.

District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was found around 3 p.m. Thursday with multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky, Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart said at a Thursday evening news conference.

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43, shot Mullins after an argument inside the judge’s chambers, a preliminary investigation revealed. Stines is now facing a first-degree murder charge, state police said. CNN is trying to determine whether Stines has retained an attorney.

Stines turned himself in after the shooting and was arrested at the scene without incident on Thursday, authorities said. He is cooperating with authorities, Gayheart said. It is unclear who will take over as the county sheriff following the arrest of Stines, who had been sheriff for about eight years.

“This community is small in nature, and we’re all shook,” Gayheart said about the shooting.

While other people were in the building at the time, no one else was inside the judge’s chambers and no other injuries were reported. There’s no threat to the public, Gayheart added.

Law enforcement has yet to release details about the argument that led up to the shots being fired, and the motive remains under investigation, Gayheart said, adding that the incident was “isolated.”

“We’re still trying to get answers to what led up to the actual shooting itself and the moments prior to the shooting,” Gayheart said.

The killing came less than two weeks after southeast Kentucky was rocked by a shooting at an interstate that wounded five people in Laurel County earlier this month. And just three days ago, a Russell Countydeputy had been killed in the line of duty, officials said.

“There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a social media post.

Here’s what we know about the two men, the killing and the investigation so far:

What we know about Mullins and Stines

Mullins, a resident of Jackhorn, served as a district judge for Kentucky’s 47th District Court in Letcher County since being appointed by former Gov. Steve Beshear in 2009, according to the Associated Press. He was elected a year later, then re-elected in 2014, 2018 and again in 2022.

Before his judicial appointment, Mullins served as assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Letcher County and primarily focused on drug-related offenses, according to CNN affiliate WKYT. He was admitted to the bar in 1995.

The district judge started promoting substance abuse treatment for people involved in the justice system in 2010, according to Kentucky nonprofit SOAR. Hundreds have been sent to inpatient drug treatment centers through his help, the Associated Press reported.

Addiction Recovery Care, which provides residential and outpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment in Eastern and Central Kentucky, began to work closely with Mullins in 2018 to provide accelerated access to treatment through a community liaison in the courthouse, according to SOAR. The program was adopted in at least 50 counties in Kentucky, the AP reported. He was also the founding member of an opioid recovery support team.

Stines was first elected as sheriff in 2018 and then re-elected in 2022. Earlier this month, the sheriff highlighted the agency’s work, including recent drug busts.

“Thank you to the awesome citizens of Letcher County, for allowing us to serve you and providing us with information to help catch fugitives and assisting us with getting drugs off our streets,” Stines wrote in a Facebook post on September 4.

An argument inside the judge’s chambers

An investigation into how the fatal shooting unfolded – and what the argument between the two men was about – is underway, state police said Thursday.

“We know that it was an argument between the two that led up – but what exactly transpired prior to the shots being fired, those are still things that we’re trying to get answers to,” Gayheart said.

There are cameras inside the building and all witnesses will be interviewed, Gayheart said Thursday.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman indicated Thursday his office will work with Jackie Steele, the commonwealth’s attorney for the 27th Judicial Circuit, as special prosecutors on the case.

“We will fully investigate and pursue justice,” Coleman said.

Mullins’ body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office, according to Gayheart.

“The investigation remains ongoing and is being investigated by KSP Post 13 Detective Clayton Stamper,” Gayheart said in a Facebook post.

The Kentucky Court of Justice is aware of the “tragic” incident in Letcher County, the court said in a statement on Facebook. “We are currently in contact with law enforcement agencies, including Kentucky State Police, and are offering our full support during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Killing shakes small Kentucky community

Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice Laurance B. VanMeter said in a statement he was “shocked” by Mullins’ killing and the court was left “shaken.”

“My prayers are with his family and the Letcher County community as they try to process and mourn this tragic loss,” VanMeter said.

Matt Butler, commonwealth’s attorney for Letcher County, will be recusing himself from the sheriff’s prosecution because his wife is the sister of Mullins’ wife, Butler said in a statement Thursday evening.

He described the sheriff and the judge as “two men that I have worked with for seventeen years and loved like brothers.”

“We all know each other here. For example, anyone from Letcher County would tell you that Judge Mullins and I married a pair of sisters and that we have children who are first cousins but act like siblings,” Butler said.

“Please pray for Judge Mullins’ family and my children. Ian and Ivy have cried and cried and begged to see their uncle,” he added. “My community is completely devastated.”

As a result of the shooting, circuit and district courts, as well as the office of the circuit court clerk will be closed until operations can resume, Kentucky Courts officials said Thursday. Letcher County schools and the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College were also placed on a brief lockdown after the shooting, according to the Associated Press.

Kentucky Auditor Allison Ball said in a post on X that she was “praying for Letcher County and District Judge Kevin Mullins.”

“May God protect this community and all those involved in the shooting,” Ball said.

Trump says Jewish voters would be partly to blame if he loses election

0

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said Jewish-American voters would be partly to blame if he loses the election in November.

The former president lamented that he was trailing his Democratic Party rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, among American Jews, as he addressed the Israeli-American Council National Summit in Washington, DC.

“If I don’t win this election – and the Jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens because if 40 percent, I mean, 60 percent of the people are voting for the enemy – Israel, in my opinion, will cease to exist within two years,” Trump said on Thursday.

Jews would be partly to blame for that outcome in the November 5 presidential election, Trump claimed, saying they tend to vote for Democrats.

He cited an unnamed poll that he said showed Harris polling at 60 percent among American Jews.

The former president has prided himself on his close ties with Israel and the Jewish community, and for being instrumental in moving the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

At a second event in the United States capital centered on denouncing anti-Semitism in the country, Trump said the Democratic Party had a “hold, or curse” on Jewish Americans and that he should be getting “100 percent” of Jewish votes because of his policies on Israel.

“My promise to Jewish Americans is this: With your vote, I will be your defender, your protector, and I will be the best friend Jewish Americans have ever had in the White House,” Trump said during the donor event. “But in all fairness, I already am.”

Jewish voters in the US have leaned heavily towards Democrats in federal elections for decades and continue to do so. But just a small shift in that vote could determine the winner in November.

The Trump campaign has made winning over Jewish voters in key battleground states a priority.

In Pennsylvania, for example, there are more than 400,000 Jewish people, in a state Joe Biden won by 81,000 votes in 2020.

In a statement before the speech, Morgan Finkelstein, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign, criticised Trump for at times associating with anti-Semites.

Trump has rejected accusations of anti-Semitism, saying he has a Jewish son-in-law.

During his comments, Trump also failed to address a CNN report published earlier in the day regarding the Republican gubernatorial candidate in North Carolina, Mark Robinson, who once called himself a “black NAZI” in a post on a pornographic forum.

Robinson has pledged to remain in the race despite the report and the Trump campaign appeared to be distancing itself from the candidate while still calling the battleground state a vital part to winning back the White House.

Jihadist airport assault leaves Mali’s junta rattled

0

The al-Qaeda flag flutters from an airport building. A jihadist places a burning rag in the engine of the presidential jet, others explore the VIP terminal or fire shots as they approach planes belonging to the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) – a familiar survival lifeline for so many countries in crisis around the world.

The social media images broadcast by the jihadists who on Tuesday morning attacked the international airport complex outside Mali’s capital, Bamako, and then roamed around the site, graphically demonstrate the fragile security of what should have been one of the most protected locations in the West African country.

A training centre for the gendarmerie (paramilitary police) in the Faladié suburb was also targeted. Residents filmed smoke rising above the skyline as explosions and gunshots shattered the dawn calm.

Just as shocking is another militant video – of fighters, their soft teenage faces a stark contrast with their weapons and combat uniforms – preparing themselves before launching the assault.

Mali’s military rulers have not said how many people died, except that some trainee gendarmes had lost their lives, but it seems that at least 60 and perhaps as many as 80 or even 100 people were killed, with a further 200 or more wounded.

Those figures may or may not include the militants killed as government forces recovered control of the airport at Senou and the Faladié barracks.

Of course, these are far from the first images of conflict in Mali.

The country has been deep in crisis since at least late 2011, when northern ethnic Tuareg separatists and radical Islamist factions allied to them, took over Timbuktu, Gao, and other towns across the north.

Bamako has suffered attacks before. In 2015 an assault on the upmarket Radisson Blu hotel claimed 20 lives and five more died in a shooting at a restaurant in the buzzy Hippodrome district.

In 2017, an attack on a tourism complex on the outskirts of the city killed at least four people.

In 2020 Col Assimi Goïta, an experienced combat commander, staged a coup criticising the elected government’s failure to effectively tackle the security crisis.

A civilian-led transition was soon established, but in May 2021 Col Goïta staged a second coup, to put himself and fellow officers firmly back in control.

But despite a reinforced focus on security, and the hiring of Russian mercenary outfit Wagner to provide extra military support – provoking a row with France that led eventually to the withdrawal of the several thousand strong French anti-terror force Barkhane – the new regime proved no more effective than its civilian predecessor in ending the violence.

Open conflict was mainly confined to the desert in the north and the more fertile central regions, where tensions were fuelled by competition between farming villagers from the Dogon ethnic group and livestock herders from the Peul (Fulani) community over precious land and water resources.

But there were occasional reminders of the jihadists’ capacity to range further south in this vast country, to Bamako and its environs.

In July 2022 militants staged two small attacks near the city and then attempted a big raid – trying to ram their way into the Kati barracks complex, the junta’s base just 15km (9.3 miles) north of the capital.

This showed the insurgents’ ability to stage high-profile raids far beyond the more northerly regions, where their presence is an influential fact of everyday life.
However, the army managed to contain this assault, reporting two dead militants as the only casualties. And ultimately the Goïta regime was able to shrug off any wider impact from the incident.

Although the attack was attributed to Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), the al-Qaeda affiliated coalition of armed groups that is Mali’s largest jihadist force, it did not substantially weaken the junta’s self-confidence and capacity to set the domestic political and diplomatic agenda.

Just weeks later, the French completed the withdrawal of their troops, having been driven out by the regime’s political hostility and the ever-tightening rules through which it stifled the operational capacity of the Barkhane force.
And the next year the junta felt sufficiently emboldened to demand the winding up of the United Nations 14,000-strong peacekeeping force, known by the acronym Minusma.

So will Col Goïta’s junta be able to brush off the highly publicised attacks of this week with the same self-confident control of the agenda that it managed after the July 2022 incidents?

Just as then, in a huge country whose territory could never be absolutely controlled by the official security forces, even backed up by Wagner – now renamed Corps Africa – it is not really surprising that many jihadist fighters managed to stage raids on locations on the outskirts of Bamako.

And such attention-grabbing forays still fall well short of the militant control over the large tracts of the countryside and numerous villages that characterise parts of central and northern Mali.

However, the security picture in West Africa today is much more fragile than it was in 2022.

Across the central Sahel, JNIM and the other main jihadist faction, the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), have been probing ever further south.
The military regime in neighbouring Burkina Faso – allied with the Malian and Nigérien juntas in the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) – has lost control of large tracts of terrain, and quite possibly even the majority of rural areas.
And in Niger jihadists stage regular attacks all over the west, and even within an hour of the capital, Niamey.

Moreover, the militants now routinely range into the northern areas of coastal countries, particularly Benin and Togo. In Ivory Coast, they have only been pushed back through a sustained military effort, backed up with a “hearts and minds” programme of development spending.

So the overall regional security picture is as difficult as it has ever been.

But in Mali itself, the mood has felt rather different.

Government forces last year mounted a highly successful campaign to seize back northern towns previously controlled by the Tuareg former separatist movement that had signed a peace agreement with the civilian government back in 2015, but which the junta has cancelled.

Although those northern groups inflicted a costly defeat on the army and its Russian allies at Tinzaouaten, in the Sahara Desert, in late July, the regime’s hold on the north’s key urban centres seems well established for now.

This campaign against the former separatists, and the army’s reoccupation of their Saharan headquarters, Kidal, has proved highly popular among southern public opinion on the streets of Bamako.

And Col Goïta and his fellow junta leaders have so far felt no need to make concessions to the West African bloc, Ecowas, as it proffers goodwill in the hope of persuading them to abandon their declaration of withdrawal from the community.

It seems unlikely that this week’s shocking attacks on the outskirts of Bamako will alter this dynamic, despite the humiliation of seeing JNIM fighters wander freely around the international airport site, where flights have now resumed.
Instead, there is a risk that, in the short term at least, the Malian regime will oversee a reassertion of nationalistic feelings – and with that, the risk of a deepening of inter-ethnic distrust, with the fingers of populist accusation all too often pointing at those groups regularly accused of jihadist sympathy or activism.

Among the flurry of social media videos to emerge from Bamako this week have been scenes not only of arrests by the authorities, but also what appear to be images of citizens’ “detention” of presumed suspects, and at least one lynching, with a man burned alive in the street.

So, as so often, it is members of the Peul community who find themselves the prime targets for such brutal reprisal in a nation desperately in need of peace and stability.

Check out Cristiano Ronaldo’s opinion on Barca’s Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham

0

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his belief that Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal will emerge as “the best player of this new generation.” The five-time Ballon d’Or recipient noted that he has been highly impressed with the 17-year-old’s performances to date.

“He’s got a huge potential,” Ronaldo told Rio Ferdinand in his Youtube channel. “I see a lot of talent. But let’s see during his journey what’s going to happen.

“But I think he’ll make it. He will be the best player of this new generation.”

Yamal, who scored Barcelona’s lone goal in their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Monaco on Thursday, has broken numerous records since making his debut.

At just 16, he became the youngest goal scorer in La Liga history and the youngest player to appear in a European Championship.

His standout performances helped Spain secure the 2024 Euros title, earning him the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Girona manager Míchel Sánchez, after watching Yamal’s performance in the Catalan derby on Sunday, remarked that he believes the young star has the potential to reach the level of Lionel Messi.

However, Yamal insists he wants to be his own player even though he is honoured to be compared to Barca legend Messi, “the greatest player in the history of football.”

Ronaldo said he believes Yamal is in the right place to do great things.

“He needs luck because he is very young,” Ronaldo said. “I hope he doesn’t have any problems [injuries]. He is in a context that helps him a lot. Spain’s national team is really good.”

Al Nassr forward praised Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham for his impressive performances.

Since joining the Spanish giants in the summer of 2023, the England international has made a significant impact, netting 23 goals and providing 13 assists, playing a key role in helping Los Blancos secure both La Liga and the Champions League titles.

Bellingham’s exceptional debut season at the Bernabéu earned him the title of La Liga’s best player.

“I think he is going to be one of the best players of this new generation,” Ronaldo said of Bellingham. “It’s the same [as Yamal], great talent, huge potential.

“You go to a club where the environment is clean, that it’s good, and you grow like the others, like [Madrid players] Camavinga, Rodrygo, like Vinícius. I think he [Bellingham] is in a team that will help him become a top player.”

Arteta says Arsenal have been preparing for the Manchester City game since pre-season

0

Arsenal concludes a demanding week of away matches with a challenging encounter against defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League this Sunday.

Manager Mikel Arteta, 42, revealed that his team has been preparing for this pivotal clash since the pre-season.

Following their victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal traveled to Bergamo, where they secured a goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday.

However, there’s little time for recovery, as they now face City on the weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s squad has narrowly defeated Arsenal for the title in the past two seasons, and once again, both teams find themselves at the top of the league standings after four matches, with City holding a two-point advantage.

“We’ve been preparing for this since pre-season. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it’s extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days,” Arteta said.

“But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally, and tactically.

“We’re making sure that everyone is ready for it because we’re going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break.”

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder’s return date.

“We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he’ll be out for,” the Spaniard said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

“We wanted the same as them, we’re not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game,” he said.

Although City have had Arsenal’s number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta’s side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at The Etihad Stadium.

“We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances,” he said.

“This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we’ve made another step and we can compete.”

Players wouldn’t have a problem cutting pay for flexible fixtures – Ancelotti

0

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he believes players would be willing to take a pay cut if it meant playing fewer games during the season.

Top internationals competing in the expanded Champions League and the revamped Club World Cup could end up playing as many as 85 games this season, which has led some players to complain about the new schedule overload.

“Football needs to reflect because the aim is to try to play less games to have less injuries,” Ancelotti said in Friday’s news conference.

“If that leads to lowering salaries, the aim is for players to play less games, so I don’t think the players will have any problem to lower their wages if they play less.”

Manchester City midfielder Rodri recently cautioned that players are nearing the point of strike action due to growing concerns about their heavy match schedules.

His sentiments were echoed by several others, including Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Dani Carvajal, who have voiced similar frustrations.

However, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti noted that any strike threats from the players would not alter the current season’s fixture calendar.

“The complaints of coaches and players is not going to change this season’s calendar,” Ancelotti said.

“It’s important to reflect on this and the players more so because they are getting tired. We have to analyse this. The players are thinking about changes in the future.”

Ancelotti also spoke about his team’s form ahead of their game against Espanyol.

Los Blancos go into Saturday’s LaLiga game on the back of a hard-fought 3-1 home win over Stuttgart in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

“Against Stuttgart we showed some great plays,” Ancelotti said. “I think we play beautiful football. I see that our fans are loving how we are playing.

“Can we play better? Yes, sometimes. With our players, with our characteristics, we have to win and play well.

“We have to think about winning and hope not to have injuries. I hope to see the team improving, keep getting that good dynamic back.”

Real Madrid currently sit third in La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points after five matches.

While the team has areas to work on, manager Carlo Ancelotti understands that progress will require patience.

Son sentenced to life imprisonment for brutal m8rder of his mother over witchcraft

0

A 33-year-old man, Bongani Thulani Matsane has been sentenced to life and an additional five years imprisonment for the brutal m8rder of his 64-year-old mother, Thembi Ngwenya after accusing her of practising witchcraft.

The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sentenced Matsane on Friday, September 20, 2024.

The regional spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, NPA in Mpumalanga, Monica Nyuswa, in a statement after the sentencing said Matsane was residing with his mother in her homestead in Mganduzweni in the district of Nsikazi.

In December 2022, the accused confronted his mother and asked her to stop bewitching him as he was told that things were not well in his life because somebody was bewitching him.

“On the evening of 14 December 2022, the deceased sent the accused to buy bread in a local shop and on his return with the bread, he gave it to the deceased and went out,” the statement read.

He took a handhoe and approached the deceased from behind. He struck her with it on the head and the deceased ran out of the house crying for help.

He continued chasing her until she collapsed.

He then dragged her into her bedroom, placed her on the bed and set the bed alight. He further wiped the blood stain on the floor.

The accused was arrested the same day.

Senior State Advocate Thulani Msibi addressed the court that the accused’s plea of guilty is not a genuine remorse, his belief in misfortunes cannot be used as a compelling reason for the court to deviate from the prescribed sentence of life.

Advocate Msibi further argued that the accused took the life of a person he was supposed to take care of.

Victim Impact Statements compiled by the other sons of the deceased and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nomfundo Mokoena were presented.

They detailed that they could not believe the evil actions committed by the accused to their mother, how their lives had been devastatingly changed, suffered financial loss and had to go for counselling sessions.

When sentencing the accused, Judge Manthata said the most aggravating factor was how the accused killed his mother and the abuse of an old person.

The accused was sentenced to life for murder and five years imprisonment for defeating the ends of Justice.

The court ordered the sentence imposed on count 2 to run concurrently with the sentence imposed on count 1, effectively the accused will serve life.

The court further declared the accused unfit to work with Old Aged persons.

“This sentence highlights the NPA’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of such crimes are severely punished to deter others,” the statement added.

six-year-old boy abducted at the age of 6 is finally found alive after 73 years

The abduction of a six-year-old boy from Oakland in 1951 has been solved after 73 years.

Luis Armando Albino has been found following efforts made by his dedicated niece who never gave up hope of tracking him down.

Luis, who was one of five siblings, had been playing at what was formerly known as Jefferson Square Park in West Oakland.

Luis, who is now 79, had been playing alongside his older brother, Roger, who was ten, in the park in West Oakland, when he was abducted by a woman on February 21, 1951.

The woman lured him away by promising that she would buy him candy.

Luis was then flown across the country to the East Coast where he was raised by a New York City couple as if he were their own son.

Luis’ mother never stopped hoping that he might one day turn up safe and well. Sadly, she passed away in 2005 aged 92 without ever learning what had happened to her son.

A breakthrough in the case only came earlier this year when Luis’ niece used DNA testing and information from newspaper clippings to search for him.

The niece, Alida Alequin, 63, who had remained in Oakland had been determined to find her long lost uncle and, together with help from local police, FBI and Department of Justice, she managed to piece the clues together.

Oakland police say her efforts “played an integral role in finding her uncle.”

In the time since he had been taken from his family, Luis appeared to have led quite the life having worked as a firefighter and served in the Marine Corps, including two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He had also become a father and grandfather himself.

Alida was able to organize a reunion for the two brothers, Luis and Roger, now 83, to meet for the first time in 73 years.

She told Mercury News how her uncle “hugged me and said, ‘Thank you for finding me’ and gave me a kiss on the cheek.”

The reunion was bittersweet, with Roger having recently been diagnosed with cancer and not having much time left to live.

“They grabbed each other and had a really tight, long hug. They sat down and just talked,” Alida said as the brothers caught up on the past including their military service and what happened on the day of the kidnapping.

Luis saw his brother one more time this past July before Roger died a month later in August.

“I think he died happily. He was at peace with himself, knowing that his brother was found. I was just so happy I was able to do this for him and bring him closure and peace,”

Alida said. As for Luis’ mother and Alida’s grandma, she believes that she would have been “very happy, most definitely. She never forgot him. She always said he was still alive. She had hoped she would see him. She never gave up that hope.”

“I’m so happy that I was able to do this for my mom and (uncle). It was a very happy ending,” she said.

“I was always determined to find him, and who knows, with my story out there, it could help other families going through the same thing. I would say, don’t give up.”

Luis has so far not spoken to the media but has some memories of what happened during his kidnapping. The adults surrounding him in New York refused to answer any questions as to why he was abducted, and he was never told what was going on.

The people he believed were his parents have since died.

Zambia’s Sixth President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to restore Democracy and the Rule of Law in the country.

The former President was speaking during the meeting of the Central Committee of the Patriotic Front held on Saturday, 21st September 2024. The Meeting was chaired by Dr. Lungu.

He emphasized that he holds no personal grudges and he hoped therefore that the proposed Meeting would be about restoring democracy and the rule of law.

President Lungu bemoaned the aggressive and concerted attacks waged against the Patriotic Front driven the State, and the determined quest by the State to decimate the Party by replacing the legitimate office bearers with imposters and surrogates. He said this was an attack on Democracy and the Rule of the Law.

He stated that the subsequent actions by the State such as to bar or prevent the Patriotic Front party from participating in by-elections deeply undermined democracy and destroyed the multi-party character of Zambia.

President Lungu directed Secretary General Hon. Raphael Nakacinda to continue and enhance mobilization of the Party and prepare his visits to the provinces. He has also called on party structures led by Provincial Chairpersons and the Committees.

DON’T ALLOW THE UPND TO DAMAGE WHAT IS GOOD, RESIST SUBJECTIVE ATTEMPTS TO AMEND CONSTITUTION – HON GEORGE CHISANGA

DON’T ALLOW THE UPND TO DAMAGE WHAT IS GOOD, RESIST SUBJECTIVE ATTEMPTS TO AMEND CONSTITUTION – HON GEORGE CHISANGA.

……….says the constitution is a national document not to be altered for personal gain.

Lusaka …….September  21, 2024 (Smart Eagles)

Patriotic Front (PF) Chairman for Legal Hon. George Chisanga has urged Zambians to resist subjective attempts to amend the current constitution.

This comes after President Hakainde Hichilema claimed there are lacunas in the constitution that could postpone elections and the UPND’s push for a general review of the constitution process.

Speaking at Media briefing Friday, Hon Chisanga said the Constitution is a national document, not a political one and should not be altered for personal gain.

He noted that the country had enacted a near-perfect constitution through a clear roadmap and task force on constitution making, with provisions like Article 52 guiding elections.

He said Zambia must therefore  not allow a small group of people (UPND) to damage what is good.

“The Patriotic Front had indicated a clear road map.  We had said that we were going to bring everyone on board.  We set out a task force on the constitution making.

When we had a Presidential By election, President Edgar Lungu then Minister of Justice said he will ensure that the constitution to be enacted was what was in the review. Act Number 2 of 2016,  it also included provisions of article 52 to guide on elections.  This was a progressive piece of legislation and the UPND also participated. When President Lungu passed it into  Law, there was need in the future to provide more clarity.  It was against that background that the story of Bill 10 came up,” he said.

Hon Chisanga has criticized the UPND’s insistence on lacunas in Article 52, saying it sends the wrong message and raises concerns about the government’s intentions.

“When you see a Government begin to justify a position that is wrong, then there is a challenge as a nation. To keep insiting that Article 52 has a lacuna, even it begins to send wrong signals to the public  that maybe there is something beyond Article 52 that the governmemt would like to achieve………….The Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Jack Mwiimbu talks about how the President  has been abused by the PF and their surrogates and threatened those who are abusing the President.

This is a multiparty system, we exist to provide checks and balances to those in power.

The Ministers who are speaking and asking the public to support the President are the one who are making a mistake…….  because the Prsident is not infallible, he is human as anybody else is. By finding a lacuna in a statute where the lacuna does not exist, he made a mistake,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Hon Chisanga has charged that there seems to be a leadership challenge in the UPND based on Contrasting statements made by the Vice President and the Head of State.

He said the Vice President is on record in Parliament as having said that the UPND has got no intention of amending the Constitution.

“There is no need to amend this constitution. The Vice president is on record in Parliament that the UPND has got no intention of amending the Constitution. It appears that there might be Leaderhsip challenges in the UPND, the President and the vice president cannot be saying different things.

We need to apply ourselves to leadership with good intentions. If this clause was as bad as the President would like to portray, why didn’t President Edgar Lungu keep on postponing elections,”  said HON. CHISANGA.

Shadreck Kasanda withdraws law suit against State

Kasanda withdraws law suit against State

LUSAKA businessman Shadreck Kasanda has backpedaled on his suit in which he claimed the State had failed grant him protection as a whistleblower after he gave damaging evidence about his Egyptian clients to law enforcement officers, by alleging that they were attempting to smuggle out minerals.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/qbVNn6qgDWT5ha84/?mibextid=oFDknk

The businessman has since discontinued the case against the State according to a notice of discontinuance filed in the Lusaka High Court.

“Take notice that the plaintiff herein has with immediate effect withdrawn and or discontinued this matter against the defendant filed before this court,” read the notice.

Kasanda  had sued the State seeking an order that he is entitled to statutory protection as a whistleblower as the disclosure he made is a protected disclose pursuant to the public interest disclosure (protection of whistleblowers).

He sought an interim order restraining the State from perpetrating or engaging in unlawful reprisal against him until the statutory protection as a whistle blower is determined under the Public Interest Disclosure Act no.4 of 2010.

In his statement of claim, Kasanda claimed in that in August 2023, he got wind of a Gold Transaction that was happening at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport between some Congolese nationals, a South African national and some Egyptians nationals.

He said upon becoming suspicious of the legality of the said transaction, he decided to report the matter to various law enforcement agencies, which included the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Zambia Police, Zambia Air Force and Zambia National Service.

“Following the plaintiff’s public interest disclosure ,the aforesaid law enforcement agencies quickly rushed to the airport and seized a number of properties including cash, some minerals and an Aircraft belonging to the Egyptian Nationals,” he said.

“Further, the law enforcement agencies also made some arrests in connection with the said gold transaction, which arrest included some Zambian and the Egyptians nationals involved.”

Kasanda said because of his disclosure in  public interest, the State recovered US$5 million under cause 2023/HPEF/37, from the Egyptians by way of a consent judgement entered into with the said Egyptians.

He stated that, in a sudden turn of events, he was also arrested and jointly charged with the Egyptians who were the subject of his public interest disclosure involving gold transactions at KKIA.

Kasanda said the matter proceeded to court , however, the DPP decided to enter a nolle prosequi in favour of the Eygptian nationals, and  they were discharged and allowed to go back to their country.

“In addition to the offence of espionage,I was also, individually, charged with the non-bailable offence of aggravated robbery,” he said.

“This aggravated robbery matter proceeded to trial in the High Court and the State failed to present before court, the alleged Eygptian complainants to come and testify in the matter in which it is alleged that they were robbed a sum of US$5 million.”

Kasanda claimed he was tried notwithstanding the advice from Zambia police to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that investigations done by Zambia police revealed that there was no evidence of the offence of aggravated robbery.

“After several adjournements granted to the state giving them an opportunity to bring before court the alleged complainants to come and testify in their matter, the High Court in exercise of its inherent jurisdiction closed the prosecution’s case and invited parties to make submissions at the close of the prosecution’s case,” he said.

“Whilst the accused was making his submission, the prosecutions quickly stood to enter a nolle prosequi, bringing proceedings to an end ,and the plaintiff was discharged accordingly.”

Kasanda said he was subsequently was re-arrested, but was granted an application for a habeas corpus by the High Court.

“The plaintiff will aver at trial that the conduct of the defendant regarding the events that unfolded at KKIA ,upon which he made a public interest disclosure has been highly punitive and injurious to the rights and interests of the plaintiff given the above unjustified acts of unlawful reprisals,” he claimed.

“The plaintiff will also aver that the defendant’s conduct is contrary to the spirit and is one that undermines the object of the law on whistleblowers, regarding public interest disclosure which the plaintiff made to the law enforcement agencies.”

Kasanda said the conduct of the State is highly suspicious and utterly strange that he could be victimized, harassed and prosecuted over a public interest disclosure while the perpetrators of the alleged illegal conduct were freed and allowed to travel back to their country, after the State benefitted from his disclosure of the suspected illegal activities of his Egyptian clients.

“By reason of the conduct of the defendant, the plaintiff has suffered injury ,loss ,intimidation and harassment by the defendant’s agents including DEC ,Zambia police, as he is vulnerable to arbitrary arrests and unending interrogations, threats of further seizure and unending interrogations, threats of further seizure and forefeiiture of his property, bordering on the public interest disclosures he made in public interest and out of which the state recovered huge sums of money,” Kasanda said.

“The plaintiff, having made a public interest disclosure in public interest, is entitled to the protection under the Public Interest Disclosure ( Protection of Whistleblowers) Act no.4 of 2010.”

He further wanted the court to order that the collective conduct of the State constitutes unlawful reprisal against him, and as such, violates the public interest disclosure (protection of whistleblowers) Act no.4 of 2010.

Kasanda was also claiming damages for injury and or harmful conduct occassioned by the State’s unlawful reprisal against him.

EFCC okays Trial within Trial in Clever Mpoha’s bribery case

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Court has allowed the holding of a trial within trial in the Simonga Farm case to ascertain the veracity of the claims by Clever Mpoha’s lawyers that ACC officers threatened to destroy his businesses and arrest his wife if he refused to testify against Stardy Mwale.

Mpoha’s lawyers alleged that their client did not freely give statements to the ACC under warn and caution as he was forced to do so.

This is in a matter where Eagle Trading International Limited, its owner Clever Mpoha and Mwale are charged with corrupt practices.

It is alleged that Eagle Trading and Mpoha greased Mwale’s palms with US$200,000 in order to gain ‘unfair’ advantage over other vendors to supply military attire to the ministry of defense.

Mwale is also accused of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

In his testimony before principal resident magistrate Sylvia Munyinya, Ferguson Kombe said Mwale and Mpoha had a WhatsApp conversation about a bank transaction, in which Mwale indicated that the same was not processed.

Kombe said on March 20, 2018, there was an attempt by Mpoha’s company Eagle Trading Limited, to transfer US$200,000 from its account domiciled at standard chartered Bank to Simonga farms limited, but the same was not successful.

“When I was looking this evidence, I had to bear in mind with other pieces of documentary evidence that I had collected during this inquiry.
Clearly from standard chartered Bank, what I established was that the transaction in question would not be processed because the narration in question didn’t have sufficient details,”he said.

“Eagle Trading International Limited was invited for an interview. When it came, it was represented by Mr Edman Banda who came with lawyers and they were led to one of the interview rooms at ACC.”

Kombe said the allegations were read out from ACC form seven and eight to Eagle Trading International Limited after it was given the reasons it was summoned for an interview.

At this point, Mpoha’s lawyers informed the Court that the businessman was coerced to give involuntary responses, hence all the statements he gave under warn and caution were not voluntary.

Sakwiba Sikota who is representing Eagles Trading International Limited, said the company equally didn’t give a free and voluntary response as the atmosphere in the interrogation room was marred with threats, which extended to the lawyers.

“It is for those reasons that we reject to the submission of the oral statements being tendered,” he said.

Milner Katolo, another lawyer said Mpoha was threatened after he refused to be a State witness.

He said ACC officers instilled fear in him when they said they would destroy his business for refusing to be a state witness against Mwale.

“They equally threatened to arrest his wife and a call out to that effect, was issued to Mrs Esther Chanda Mpoha. All those threats were because Mr Clever Mpoha told ACC that he cannot bear false testimony,” Katolo said.

“For that reason, we strongly submit that the warn and caution statement in issue were not obtained under free and voluntary submission and the volunatariness or otherwise of the same can only be ascertained after conducting a trial within a trial to establish the issue of voluntariness.”

He asked the Court to conduct a trial within trial to establish the issue of voluntariness.

ACC senior  prosecutor Daniel Ngwira did not object to the application for a trial within trial.

Magistrate Munyinya granted the application.

REJECT UPND’S PLANS OF ABOLISHING CONCOURT, CHISANGA TELLS ZAMBIANS

Lusaka – Friday, September 20, 2024 (Smart Eagles)

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Chairperson for Legal Hon George Chisanga has called on Zambians to reject any initiatives allegedly linked to the United Party for National Development (UPND) that suggest the dissolution of the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) of Zambia.

Speaking during a media briefing at Parliament grounds this afternoon, Hon Chisanga likened the potential dissolution of the ConCourt to killing a baby before it grows, noting that the court has only been operational since 2016.

He expressed concern over what he described as UPND’s growing animosity towards the ConCourt and wondered what has motivated the UPND to develop such hatred for the ConCourt as to suggest for its abolishment.

“As a lawyer and leader, this information has deeply worried me. Historically, whenever Zambia has embarked on constitutional reforms, we have always strived to meet international standards on resolving constitutional matters. The creation of the Constitutional Court was part of that process,” Hon Chisanga said.

He admits that the PF has disagreed with some of the ConCourt’s decisions but stressed that the party remains duty-bound to respect the court’s rulings.

Hon Chisanga argues that dissolving the ConCourt would undermine the nation’s efforts to establish a robust constitutional democracy.

“If the idea of abolishing the ConCourt is indeed coming from the UPND as attributed to minister of Home Affairs Jack mwiimbu, Zambians must reject it because it is counterproductive. We worked hard to establish the ConCourt as a cornerstone of our constitutional democracy with specialized judges who are highly qualified,” he added.

Hon Chisanga further revealed that concerns about the quality of ConCourt judges were raised even during the PF’s time in government.

He however states that the solution lies not in abolishing the court but in appointing judges of integrity and distinction who will serve the nation effectively.

Hon Chisanga, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lukanshya, urged UPND leaders, particularly Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, to provide proper guidance on constitutional matters.

He emphasized that Zambians should actively participate in such national debates rather than leaving them solely to politicians which can be dangerous.

Meanwhile, Hon Chisanga has called on the ruling party to revisit the controversial Bill 10, which was rejected in 2020, and to issue a public apology for its dismissal if they are serious about making constitutional amendments.
