The Malawi vice-president who was plucked from business

0

Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima has died at the age of 51 after a military aircraft he was flying in crashed in a forest in the north of the country.

He had been vice-president for 10 years, initially under former President Peter Mutharika, who picked him from the business sector for the second most senior post in government.

He was described as a “performer” and “workaholic” but he was perhaps defined by being at the centre of corruption allegations in government.

First as an accuser, and then as an accused.

Before Dr Chilima became vice-president in 2014, he was the managing director of the country’s leading telecommunications firm Airtel Malawi, the first Malawian to head the organisation.

Mr Mutharika had reportedly said he was partnering with a “reliable and productive” person.

But four years later, Dr Chilima fell out with the president, accusing the government of not doing enough to fight corruption and protecting some people.

Under Malawian law the president cannot fire the vice-president – Dr Chilima defied calls to resign despite publicly challenging the government he was in.

He later formed his own political party, the United Transformation Movement (UTM), calling for radical change and reform in the country.

He ran for president in 2019 as the party’s candidate and came third.

Mr Mutharika won that election but it was subsequently annulled by Malawi’s top court because of widespread irregularities.

It was the first time in Africa that an election result was both overturned by a court and then the sitting president went on to be defeated in a re-run.

Dr Chilima teamed up as the running mate of Lazarus Chakwera in the historic 2020 re-run.

Mr Chakwera, who had emerged second in the discredited poll of 2019, was resoundingly elected president, and Dr Chilima became his vice-president.

But the vice-president would soon himself face corruption allegations, which he had so much rallied against in the previous administration.

He was arrested in 2022 on claims that he received money in return for influencing the awarding of government contracts – which he denied.

The president fired other officials who were named alongside him.

As he could not sack the vice-president, Mr Chakwera promised he would no longer delegate any official duties to Dr Chilima while he was facing trial.

But the charges were dropped last month with no reasons given – in a move that raised questions about the handling of corruption cases.

Before his role as a political heavyweight in Malawi, Dr Chilima had held other senior roles in the corporate sector, including at Coca Cola and Unilever.

He was an economist and held a PhD in knowledge management.

While serving in government, he was also the minister responsible for economic planning and public sector reforms.

The government’s website said he was a “performer”, “workaholic” and “an achiever”.

Dr Chilima was born on 12 February 1973 in Ntcheu district in central Malawi.

He leaves behind his wife Mary and two children, Sean and Elizabeth.

Real Madrid to snub Club World Cup place over poor incentives – Ancelotti hints

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has announced that the club will not participate in the inaugural edition of FIFA’s new Club World Cup tournament next summer, citing insufficient financial incentive.

This expanded competition is scheduled to take place in the United States in June and July 2025, featuring 32 teams from various continents including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.

So far, 29 of the 32 spots have been secured, with Real Madrid qualifying by winning the Champions League titles in 2022 and 2024.

However, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Giornale on Monday, Ancelotti revealed that Madrid, along with several other unnamed clubs, does not plan to participate.

“Players and clubs won’t participate in that tournament,” Ancelotti said. “One single Real Madrid game is worth €20 million, and FIFA want to give us that amount for the entire competition. Negative.

“Just like us, other clubs will refuse the invitation.”

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup is the flagship initiative for world football’s governing body, as they look to replicate the success of club competitions such as the Champions League and the Copa Libertadores.

The last edition of the Club World Cup’s previous incarnation, in Saudi Arabia in December 2023, featured just seven teams and was won by Manchester City, who beat Brazilian side Fluminense in the final.

The new format, first announced in 2022, is set to include 12 teams from UEFA, six from CONMEBOL, four each from CONCACAF, CAF and the AFC, one from Oceania’s OFC and one from the host country.

Those teams qualify via either a “champions pathway” — winning their continent’s club competition — or a “ranking pathway” based on previous performance.

The tournament has faced criticism from domestic leagues and players’ unions, who argue that players are being overworked.

Speaking last month, FIFA president Gianni Infantino rejected those claims.

“FIFA is organizing around 1% of the games of the top clubs in the world,” Infantino said. “When it comes to the national teams, it is very similar.

“If you look at all the national team games around the world, we still have between 1% and 2% of the matches which are organized by FIFA. All other matches, 98% to 99%, are organized by other organizations.”

“With this 1% or 2% matches that FIFA organizes, FIFA is financing football all over the world… I hope that these figures will stop this futile debate.”
Ancelotti is on holiday in Vancouver, Canada, after a season that saw him lead the club to a Champions League and LaLiga double.

He told Il Giornale that he had not given up hope of convincing Toni Kroos to change his mind on retirement, after the midfielder said he would hang up his boots after playing in this summer’s European Championship with Germany.

“Unfortunately Kroos has decided to stop, he is a German in his choices, but he will continue to live in Madrid,” Ancelotti said. “I told him that if, in the autumn, he had to change his mind, a phone call and we’ll start again.”

Thomas Tuchel not a candidate on Man Utd’s wish list if Ten Hag exit

Sources have it that Man Utd are unlikely to appoint Thomas Tuchel if they decide to sack manager Erik ten Hag.

Tuchel had been considered a potential replacement, with representatives of the German coach approaching before the end of the season and further meetings held over the past two weeks.

However, Tuchel is no longer in the running due to concerns that he may not be the right fit for United’s new structure.

According to a source, incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth prefers a “yes” manager who won’t challenge the recruitment department over squad decisions.

The decision to end talks with Tuchel has been described as “mutual.”

United have also reached out to Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, and Roberto De Zerbi.

Meanwhile, Kieran McKenna has decided to remain at Ipswich Town after signing a new long-term contract, and Gareth Southgate has indicated his focus is solely on leading England at Euro 2024, which begins in Germany on Friday.

United are hopeful of concluding their end-of-season review this week, although there is no set timeframe for the process. Ten Hag is reportedly still uncertain about his future at the club.

Despite this, sources have it that United remain confident they are on track with their summer plans.

Club executives have reassured representatives of senior players that efforts to strengthen the squad are ongoing, even as Ten Hag’s future remains uncertain.

Technical director Jason Wilcox, director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves, and chief scout Steve Brown are currently handling transfer activities.

Both Hargreaves and Brown have been in contact with clubs and representatives over the past week to bring in new players. The club is prioritising strikers and centre-backs, although short lists of targets have been created for all positions.

Doubts over Ten Hag’s future persist as INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford leads a thorough end-of-season review, which has now extended into its third week.

Sources have it that representatives of several current players have contacted the club to inquire about the status of the review, Ten Hag’s position, and progress in the transfer market.

A representative of one player has revealed that a decision will not be made about his own future until it’s known who the manager will be next season.

United remain confident they will have a positive summer, although sources have revealed that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and acting CEO Jean Claude-Blanc have admitted to staff that the recruitment department “will not be up to full speed” until Ashworth is in place as sporting director.

According to reports, United are hoping to boost their summer budget by agreeing to permanent transfers for Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.

The club will consider offers of around £40 million ($51 million) for Sancho and Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Getafe, respectively.

There has been significant loan interest in both players, but according to sources, United is pushing for permanent deals.

“It’s a closed door” – Pep on return to Barcelona

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has firmly ruled out the possibility of returning to Barcelona at any point in the future.

Guardiola, whose contract with City ends in June 2025, previously hinted in May that the upcoming season might be his last at the Etihad.

When asked on Monday about the potential of a return to Barça, where he guided the club to 14 honours during his four seasons in charge, Guardiola stated, “It’s a door that is closed.”

The 53-year-old made these remarks during a press conference at his annual golf tournament, the Legends Trophy, currently underway in Girona, Spain.

“The Barça bench is one of the most complicated because you have to manage many cases. In Manchester everything we do remains inside and at Barça, everything comes out,” he said.

The ex-Barça player guided City to a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title, following a remarkable season that also saw his team achieve a historic treble.

Meanwhile, Barça concluded the 2023–24 season without any silverware and opted for Hansi Flick as the successor to Xavi Hernández in May. Xavi’s tenure ended at the end of the season as the club sought a new direction.

Xavi assumed leadership of the Spanish team in November 2021 and frequently drew comparisons to Guardiola.

Guardiola said of those comparisons: “What is certain is that it’s not my fault. That’s for sure. I’ve been 11 or 12 years away from Barcelona. I’m not a suspect in that sense. Ask that to those who have made the comparisons, I haven’t. I wish Xavi the best in finding a new challenge.”

Regarding Xavi’s replacement, Guardiola expressed confidence in Barça’s choice. Flick, who had been without a job since September 2023 following his dismissal from the Germany national team, previously enjoyed significant success at Bayern Munich.

Flick secured the Champions League as part of a treble in 2020 before transitioning to the Germany national team role in the summer of 2021.

“I wish him the best of luck in the world,” Guardiola said.

“When you arrive at a new club, you always need help. You have to try to get help from within and have total support. You have to go little by little. You can’t be a champion in September or October.

“Hansi is an extraordinary person who has a lot of desire. A lot. But he needs his time. What he did at Bayern was extraordinary; he won everything.”

Barça finished runners-up to Real Madrid in La Liga, with their rivals adding France star Kylian Mbappé to their already strong roster.

“With or without Mbappé, they are always strong,” Guardiola said.

“It’s the rival to beat in the Champions [League], without a doubt. Everyone knows that. For all of us that are behind them, it’s motivation to try to beat them.

Madrid has always been very strong and they are adding up front a player that has a lot of strength.”

Ed Sheeran has opened up about why he does not have modern day commmunication tools

Ed Sheeran has opened up about why he does not have modern day commmunication tools.

The “Shape of You” singer recently appeared on a podcast episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane, where he had to tell the host that they couldn’t exchange phone numbers because he doesn’t have a cell phone to call or text him from.

“I don’t have a number, but you can have my email,” the Grammy winner said. “That isn’t me playing you off either.”

However, the singer did admit that his team gives him a phone to use when he attends events just for the purpose of being active on social media.

He said: “I have something to like video stuff that would then go up on social media. But it’s not like an active working phone.”

The decision to get rid of his phone in the first place occurred in December 2015, when the singer recalled having too many contacts to keep up with.

“I had the same number from like age 15, I think,” he said. “I got famous, and I had 10,000 contacts in my phone that would just – people would just text the whole time. And I was just constantly in touch with a lot of people.”

“I feel like with phones, everyone expects you to reply, and if you don’t reply, it’s rude. Sometimes you’re just not in a headspace to reply, you’re busy or doing whatever, but then you reply, then they reply back… and suddenly you’re in like 40 conversations at once.”

Consequently, Sheeran made the decision to get rid of his phone and only use an iPad.

His primary method of communication is now email, with the singer explaining that he only checks it around once per week.

“On a Thursday or Friday, I sit down, usually in the car. I blast all the emails. Catch up. Do all the talking to whoever… and that’s it,” the singer said. “You can really limit your time.”

“I went to dinner after the Celtics yesterday, and you just leave your iPad in your hotel room. I had dinner with my best friend. We caught up, had a long chat and that was it.”

He also noted another email benefit, which is that no one expects a reply instantly, so there is no fear of a person’s negative reaction to being left on read.

Sheeran explained that not having a phone allows him to be bored, which he says is often when his song ideas come to him.

“When you’re just sitting doing nothing… that’s when I think of a lyric or a melody, or you’ll have an idea about where to go next in your career,” he said.

“Nothing creative has ever come out of being connected the whole time. Boredom is what makes someone think of an iPhone.”

Drunk Tyson Fury escorted by bouncers from pub before collapsing on the floor just weeks after losing to Usyk

British boxer, Tyson Fury has been photographed being escorted out of a pub before collapsing on the floor outside after he got heavily drunk.

The British former world champion – who lost his title to Oleksandr Usyk last month was led out by two security staff on Friday evening after enjoying one drink too many in Nowhere bar in Morecambe, Lancashire, UK.

But his night at the pub came to an end when club staff seeing that he was too intoxicated, gently persuaded the boxer to head back to his £1.7m mansion which he shares with wife Paris and their seven children.

Another video taken by a motorist while waiting to collect her son showed Fury crawling on his hands and knees outside the bar with his head on the pavement.

The woman said: “I heard a lot of shouting and commotion and then I saw Tyson crawling on his hands and knees in the street. He looked in a bad way. Hopefully it was just a one-off blow out for him.”

DJ Scott Shearing, a popular Dj in Tyson’s vicinity, defended Fury saying how he happily posed for pictures with dozens of fans and even gave one young girl £20.

Posting a picture of Fury online, he added: “I’m sure you’ve all seen the video of Tyson Fury being escorted out of Nowhere on FB. Lots of people with plenty to say.

“The man is a bl**dy legend, multi millionaire and yet he is still just like you or me. He goes out shopping, just like you.

Had friends over from America and they couldn’t believe how down to earth and friendly he was. Win or lose the guys a legend in my eyes

“Goes to the pub just like you, maybe gets drunk just like you too. I get he is a public figure but he is only human.

“I take my hat off to him as everywhere he goes people ask him for photos when he’s just out like everyone else to relax and unwind he always obliges.

“He was in the Strawbs Fri for a good few hours and they were all singing and keeping to themselves.

“Lots of people asked to have their picture taken with him. He took the time to do this in fact a young girl I know had her picture with him and he gave her £20.

“The man has a heart and feelings for god sake. In boxing he is a legend regardless of his last fight however he is proud to live in Morecambe and always mentions us.

“Money and fame can bring its own problems when the temptation for excess of anything is there and available, be it buying fancy cars, houses or going out drinking it must be hard to cope with mentally.

“Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t turn it down but your every move is in the spotlight.

“He has his own demons with mental health and all that goes along with it but let’s show the man some respect for his achievements and love of Morecambe.

“We should have a statue on the prom celebrating him not putting him down at every opportunity!!!”

Donald Trump calls Taylor Swift ‘unusually beautiful,’ questions if she is ‘legitimately liberal’

Former US President Donald Trump has described singer Taylor Swift as ‘unusually beautiful’ while questioning if she is ‘legitimately liberal’ or if it’s all an act.

According to excerpts from a forthcoming book, the ex-president discussed the megastar in an interview for ‘Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass’ by Variety co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh. It comes out later this month.

When Setoodeh asked Trump what he thought of the ‘Shake it Off’ singer in November 2023, the ex-president heaped praise on the billionaire performer.

‘I think she’s beautiful – very beautiful! I find her very beautiful,’ Trump told him according to an excerpt released to Variety.

Trump also said ‘I hear she’s very talented’ and ‘I think she’s very beautiful, actually – unusually beautiful.’

But the Republican presidential hopeful suspects the admiration is not mutual.

‘I think she’s liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump,’ he said.

Ahead of the 2016 election, Swift kept quiet on her political leanings leading some to suspect she was actually a secret Republican.

But during the 2018 midterms, Swift voiced strong support for Tennessee Democrats including Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and House candidate Jim Cooper.

At the time, she explained it this way in an Instagram post: ‘In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.’

‘I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,’ she added.

In 2020, the ‘Anti-Hero’ singer came out in full support of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

‘I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs,’ she said in an interview with V Magazine ahead of the election.

She also tagged Trump in an X post blasting him: ‘After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November.’

But Swift has yet to make an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race.

During Trump’s interview for the book he questioned whether Swift really is liberal despite her public endorsements in recent years.

‘She is liberal, or is that just an act?’ Trump asked. ‘She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act?’

‘It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal,’ Trump added.

Singapore Airlines passengers to receive $10k for injuries suffered during flight turbulence

Singapore Airlines has announced passengers will receive $10,000 in compensation for injuries suffered on a flight hit by extreme turbulence which killed a 73-year-old man.

British father-of-two Geoff Kitchen suffered a suspected heart attack on board flight SQ321, while several other passengers and crew suffered skull, brain, and spine injuries during the terrifying high-altitude ordeal.

The pilots diverted the Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew to Bangkok, where the injured were taken to hospitals.

In a statement on Tuesday, Singapore Airlines (SIA) said it had sent out emails offering US$10,000 in compensation to passengers who sustained minor injuries during the incident – with the airline set to discuss higher payouts with individuals who were more severely hurt.

‘For those who sustained more serious injuries… we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so,’ the airline said.

‘Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of US$25,000 to address their immediate needs.

‘This will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive.’

In addition, the carrier said it would refund fares for all passengers who were on board the flight, including those who were not injured.

‘All passengers will also receive delay compensation in accordance with the relevant European Union or United Kingdom regulations,’ it said.

As of Tuesday, 11 passengers from the flight were still receiving treatment in hospitals in Bangkok, a SIA spokesperson told AFP.

Under the Montreal Convention, airlines are liable for damages for the injury or death of passengers while on an airplane.

‘The compensation amounts are determined by the severity of each passenger’s injuries, based on the information provided thus far by the respective medical institutions,’ the spokesperson said.

‘We recognise that passengers with more serious injuries may require further support tailored to their individual circumstances.’

SIA earlier gave Sg$1,000 (£580) to each passenger departing Bangkok for their final destination to cover their immediate expenses.

It has also been shouldering the medical expenses of the injured passengers, and had arranged for their family members to fly to Bangkok when requested.

‘SIA remains committed to supporting the affected passengers who were on board SQ321,’ the airline said.

police officer sentenced to three life terms for killing his wife, her sister and brother

The Mpumalanga High Court in South Africa has sentenced a 39-year-old police officer, Sizwe Cedric Khoza to three life sentences for killing his wife and her siblings.

Khoza, who was attached to Masoyi police station, shot and killed his wife, 35-year-old Nomthandazo Mnisi last year. He also shot her 32-year-old sister, Colisile Mnisi, and her 42-year-old brother, Dennis Mkhantshwa, in Hazyview on 30 April 2023.

Khoza shot the siblings in cold blood during a family meeting seeking to resolve his marital issues with his wife.

South African police officer sentenced to three life terms for killing his wife, her sister and brother

The judgement was handed down on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, by Judge Takalani Vincent Ratshibvumo, who also declared Khoza medically unfit to possess a fireman.

Judge Ratshibvumo imposed the sentence against Khoza “to send a message to the community of Masoye”

“I checked to see if there is any substantial and compelling reason that justifies deviation from the prescribed sentence of life imprisonment,” said Judge Ratshibvumo.

“The more I zoomed into these traditional mitigating factors, instead of me finding anything substantial and compelling to justify the imposition of anything less, unfortunately, I find even more aggravating factors.

“In fact, deviation from the prescribed sentences will send a wrong message to the community. The community of Masoye and people of Mpumalanga have to know that the courts are not going to tolerate gender-based violence

“The message has to go out to the streets of Mbombela that anyone who violates women will be dealt with by the courts mercilessly

“For the simple reason that you have one life, the legislature also provides that any sentence that is imposed together with life imprisonment shall run concurrently with life imprisonment. As a result, the sentences in count number 2 and 3 shall run concurrently with sentences in count 1,” said the Judge.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Mpumalanga, Khoza had last week, pleaded guilty in the High Court in Mbombela to three counts of murder after he shot the two sisters who were working as nurses, and their brother Dennis Collen Mkhatshwa.

“The accused in the matter (Khoza) pleaded guilty on three counts of murder and the matter was postponed to June 10, 2024 for sentencing proceedings,” Mpumalanga NPA regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said last week.

Khoza returned to court on Monday, where the case was rolled over to Tuesday.

During the appearance on Monday, Nyuswa said the State and the defence presented arguments in aggravation and mitigation of Khoza’s sentence.

Court papers revealed that prior to the shooting incident, Khoza and Nomthandazo were having challenges in their marriage.

The police officer also invited his relatives to the meeting which was held at his residence on April 30 last year

The meeting degenerated, and according to court papers, Khoza became angry and stormed out of the meeting.

“He came back armed. He cocked the firearm and shot the two deceased (Xolisile Mnisi and Dennis Collen Mkhatshwa) and his wife (Nomthandazo). The three deceased died at the scene of the crime,” the court papers detail.

Injuries suffered by the three family members are also detailed in the court papers, including gunshot wounds to their heads, multiple perforating gunshot wounds to the chest, with lung and liver injuries

After Khoza’s conviction, Nyuswa on behalf of the NPA in Mpumalanga, told IOL that the State will ask the court to impose “a severe sentence” on Khoza.

At the time, acting national spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), Robbie Raburabu said the police officer allegedly used his service pistol to slaughter the siblings

“The family were meeting, following a dispute between the suspect constable and his wife. When things did not go the suspect’s way, he decided to go fetch his service pistol and fatally shot the three family members, including his wife,” said Raburabu.

Ipid investigators were summoned to the crime scene at Kamajika Trust near Sabie Sand in Mpumalanga province.

Stormy Daniels has described how she was sexually abused at the age of nine

0

Pornstar and Trump accuser, Stormy Daniels has described how she was sexually abused at the age of nine and how she used horses to survive a tumultuous childhood.

Speaking on the first episode of Daily Mail’s Everything I Know About Me: Stormy Daniels, which was released Tuesday, June 11, the pornstar at the center of Donald Trump’s hush money trial revealed that she wanted to go back and ‘kill’ her abuser, but he was already dead.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, said she spent most of her childhood in a small house in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which fell into disrepair after her father left.

She revealed she always felt sympathetic for her father because he ‘made it very clear that he didn’t want to have children.’

She claimed she was often questioned about why she wasn’t more mad that her father left the family.

‘But if a woman is being dishonest, it sort of takes that power away,’ she explained. ‘And he never wanted children.

‘So it’s really hard to be angry at a man who didn’t have that choice, which sounds very opposite of what we’re used to hearing that, you know, women are the ones that should have the voice and the choice and whatever, but so, I think so should men – and he didn’t.’

Her father remarried and divorced – but when he was with the second wife Susan, she made sure Daniels remained in his life and took her horseback riding for the first time.

‘My stepmom was like very excited to teach me about horses and show me horses,’ Daniels said. ‘She bought me my first pair of riding boots.’

‘It was nice to get away and have a clean place to sleep at least twice a year,’ Daniels added.

Later, as a teenager, Daniels spent $500 of Christmas money given to her by her stepfather to purchase an ailing horse named Jade.

Riding and taking care of Jade, Daniels said, was how she kept herself out of trouble during her high school years.

Daniels remembered that there would be no food in the house and her mother would disappear for days at a time.

‘And I wouldn’t eat,’ the adult actress recalled.

She explained that as an adult if she becomes the slightest bit hungry ‘I panic.’

‘I can’t stand to be hungry,’ she noted. ‘It’s such a trigger for me.’

Daniels then revealed the name of her abuser and said she wasn’t allowed to reveal his name in her tell-all book.

‘He’s dead now, by the way, because I later went back to kill him,’ she said. ‘And he was already, he was already deceased.’

‘Although it shouldn’t really matter because I know there’s a police record,’ she continued, adding that the omission ‘made me very angry.’

In the interview, Daniels recalls wanting to resurrect her relationship with her mother when she was pregnant with her own daughter.

‘And I will tell you that the second my daughter was born, every once of forgiveness, sympathy empathy – maybe I’m being too hard – [for] my mom went out the window and I completely stopped speaking to her,’ Daniels recalled.

‘I haven’t accepted a text, a phone call, a message, an email, nothing since the day my daughter was born,’ she added

Kevin Spacey breaks down in tears after admitting to losing his home and money over sexual assault allegations

Actor, Kevin Spacey broke down in tears in a new interview after admitting to “touching someone sexually” despite the individual not wanting him to.

The actor was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017 but was found not guilty in a 2022 New York lawsuit and was acquitted of sexual assault charges in a separate London trial in 2023.

In an interview with Piers Morgan, he spoke at length about the accusations he has faced.

He is due to stand trial in the UK again, likely in early 2025, over a lawsuit by another man claiming Spacey sexually assaulted him. Spacey has denied all allegations.

Kevin, 64, admitted wrongdoing to Piers Morgan and stated that he had acted inappropriately towards people. When asked about his “bad behaviour”, Kevin responded that he had been “Pushing the boundaries”.

He later added: “Being too handsy, touching someone sexually in a way that I didn’t know at the time they didn’t want.”

Piers replied: “Some people would say that is criminal, that if you grope people in a sexual way against their wishes, that that is a crime.”

“I agree that the word ‘grope’ is a very odd word,” Kevin said, adding: “I personally, I have caressed people, I have been gentle with people, that is the way that I am. You’re making a pass at someone, you don’t want to be aggressive. You want to be gentle. You want to see if they’re going to respond positively. I think the word itself is not a word that I associate with my experience.”

Later in the interview, Spacey broke down into tears as he revealed he had been forced to sell his home and was left on the brink of bankruptcy. He revealed that his home in Baltimore is currently being auctioned.

He explained: “Well, it’s funny you asked that question, because this week, where I have been living in Baltimore, is being foreclosed on. My house is being sold at auction. So I have to go back to Baltimore and put all my things in storage.” When asked about where he is living, Kevin responded: “So the answer to that question is, I’m not quite sure where I’m going to live now, but I have been in Baltimore since we started shooting House of Cards there.”

Disclosing why his home was being foreclosed, he stated he “can’t pay the bills” that he owed, later revealing he had “managed to sort of dodge” bankruptcy due to the rising costs of legal bills.

“None,” he replied when Piers asked how much money he had left in his bank.

“Well I mean, you have some sense of legal bills. I still owe a lot of legal bills that I have not been able to pay,” he stated, adding that he was in a “considerable” amount of debt before confirming the cost was “many millions”.

In 2022, the Oscar-winning actor was sued by a man at the High Court in London who claimed he had been sexually assaulted by Spacey and suffered “psychiatric damage”. The civil claim was paused after Spacey was charged – and later acquitted – in criminal proceedings of a number of sexual offences alleged by four men between 2001 and 2013.

SA rapper mourns daughter, 9, killed in car crash

South African rapper Shebeshxt is mourning the death of his nine-year-old daughter after she died in a car crash.

“My life will never be the same without your presence,” the rapper said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

The musician was travelling with three passengers to perform at the African National Congress (ANC) Siyanqoba Rally celebration concert in the northern Limpopo province on Saturday when the car collided with a heavy motor vehicle and overturned.

In addition to losing his daughter, the rapper, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, also shared that he had lost his foot in the crash.

“My heart is so so broken.. I’m trying to adjust the accident that left me in trauma and so many tears. Loosing [sic] my f##t was enough, not too loose [sic] my daughter,” he wrote on X.

Condolences and prayers from fans and the music community have been pouring in.
Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM) said in a statement on Monday: “We cannot imagine the pain and grief they must be experiencing, but we want them to know that they are not alone.

“The entire artistic community stands in solidarity with them, offering comfort and support. Shebe is not only a talented artist but also a valued member of our creative fraternity.”

Videos of the crash have been circulating online. In one clip, Shebeshxt is seen lying on the ground while paramedics attend to him.

Tidimalo Chuene, the spokesperson for the transport department in Limpopo, told local media the cause of the crash was under investigation.

This is Shebeshxt’s second car accident this year.
In January he was involved in a crash which left him unharmed but his car was written off.

Shebeshxt’s popularity grew after his song Ke Di Shxt Malume became hugely popular on TikTok and has been on a steady rise in the music industry in South Africa, but he has become a controversial figure.

Earlier this year a video of the rapper pulling out a gun while performing was widely shared on social media.

Girls freed from Boko Haram in Nigeria can face further detention and abuse by military – Amnesty report finds

0

Girls and young women freed from Boko Haram terrorists in northeast Nigeria continue to suffer severe hardships, including unlawful military detention, neglect, and inadequate support to start over, according to a new Amnesty International report.

While protracted military detention has decreased recently, the report released Monday noted that many women still experienced mistreatment.

Titled, “‘Help us build our lives’: Girl Survivors of Boko Haram and Military Abuses in Northeast Nigeria,” it probes how girls and young women have been abducted, forced into marriage, and subjected to sexual violence by Boko Haram.

Survivors recounted giving birth to children fathered by Boko Haram fighters, often when they were still minors themselves. One young woman revealed that she twice witnessed Boko Haram members execute women who had taken contraceptive pills.

Based on 126 interviews with women and girls aged between 12 and 48 years old, including 82 who survived being abused while children, the report details the atrocities carried out by Boko Haram. The interviews were conducted between 2019 and 2024 in northeast Nigeria, with the majority undertaken in the past year.

Amnesty has contacted several global partners about its findings, including the office of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, urging it to investigate “crimes under international law committed by all parties during the conflict in north-east Nigeria.”

Amnesty researchers say they spoke to nearly 50 girls and young women who escaped Boko Haram and found their way to government-held territory, risking their lives and those of their children in the process.

However, their horrific experiences at the hands of their captors were further compounded by the hardship they faced once they regained their freedom.

“These girls, many of whom are now young women, had their childhood stolen from them and suffered a litany of war crimes and other human rights abuses. They are now showing remarkable bravery as they seek to take control of their future,” said Samira Daoud, Amnesty International’s regional director for West and Central Africa.

‘Wives of Boko Haram’

Among the 126, the Amnesty team spoke to 31 girls and young women who described being unlawfully imprisoned in military custody between 2015 and mid-2023 for periods ranging from a few days to over four years, accused of having allegiances with Boko Haram.

They described being humiliated by soldiers who called them “wives of Boko Haram” and accused them of being behind killings carried out by the terror group.

Several told Amnesty researchers of enduring beatings while detained by the military. One of them, named NV in the report, said she fled Boko Haram in 2021 when she was around 20. She said she was held for two months in Madagali, Adamawa State, by soldiers.

NV said: “When they [soldiers] brought food… they gave us a portion in our hand and soup in one bowl for all of us to share… As a toilet, they gave us a plastic bag.”

Another, called GN in the report, said Nigerian soldiers detained her after they raided the camp where she and others were held by Boko Haram, before being taken to an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. She had been forcibly married to a Boko Haram fighter while in captivity but remarried while living in the IDP for an extended period.

She later received a call from her Boko Haram “husband” asking her to come back to him, which aroused suspicion from a neighbor who reported her to security forces, GN said.

“Nigerian soldiers detained her in Bama Prison for around one month in the second half of 2021 and beat her with a cane for three days. She was pregnant at the time. The soldiers blindfolded her and transferred her to Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri. GN was unlawfully detained there for around one year, during which she gave birth,” the report stated.

By the time she regained her freedom, her Boko Haram “husband” had sued her and her new husband in sharia (Islamic) court and they were ordered to pay him money, it added.

Amnesty International said it had communicated its findings to Nigerian federal and state authorities.

In response, it said, the Nigerian military denied all allegations, claiming it upholds human rights in its operations, and dismissed Amnesty International’s sources, primarily survivors of abuse, as “intrinsically unreliable,” in a letter dated 22 April 2024 annexed in the report.

“The NA (Nigerian Army) once again emphasises its positive credentials in upholding human rights… The NA will not be stampeded into action consequent upon evidence merely targeted to incite.”

CNN has contacted the Nigerian Army and the Borno State authorities for comment on the allegations.

The Borno State government, under an initiative to reintegrate fleeing and surrendered Boko Haram fighters, gave reassurances that they would not be prosecuted but allowed to stay with their families, including their wives, according to the report.

“Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum promised that Boko Haram fighters would not be handed over to the military and would be provided with services and allowed to stay with their families, including their ‘wives,’” the report said.

When Amnesty asked girls and young women about the screening process conducted by the military or government authorities after they had exited Boko Haram, “none of the interviewees said they were asked whether they had married or joined Boko Haram freely.” This failure to attempt to identify victims of forced marriage or trafficking makes it even harder for the women and girls to access the support they are entitled to, the report said.

A decade-long reign of terror
Since 2009, the armed Islamist group Boko Haram has waged an insurgency estimated to have killed more than 35,000 people and displaced two million people in the country’s northeast, according to the UN.

During a reign of terror that spanned more than a decade, Boko Haram launched attacks on families in the northeast of Nigeria, with tactics including “suicide bombings, abductions, torture, rape, forced marriages, and recruitment of child soldiers,” according to the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

One of Boko Haram’s most notorious abductions was the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014, when nearly 300 students were taken from their school in Chibok, Borno State. This event prompted global outrage and spotlighted the insurgent group’s brutal tactics.

Since the Chibok abductions, many more girls have been abducted; most of them were forced into marriage. According to the report, Boko Haram engages in child and forced marriage.

The interviewees described harsh treatment and public punishments and at least 31 girls told Amnesty researchers they were forced to witness lashings, amputations, and beheadings.

One girl referred to as GH in the report, was held captive for about 10 years.

She recounted often being forced to watch violent punishments. “Sometimes I dream about the corpses that I saw or the stoning of the women that I saw. Once I open my eyes, I can’t go back to sleep again,” she said in the report.

Many survivors of Boko Haram told Amnesty that they witnessed Boko Haram killing their relatives.

One young woman, named as CB in the report, said she was abducted at around age 13 in 2014.

“One day, Boko Haram … came into our house. They told our father we were non-believers. They shot my father in the back of his head, and the bullet came through his eyes. We started crying. They said if we don’t keep quiet, they will kill my mother too,” she told researchers.

Kidnapped girls were also forced into sexual slavery and domestic servitude as “wives,” with at least 33 survivors telling Amnesty they were raped by the men they were forced to marry.

One teenager, named as HA in the Amnesty report, said she agreed to get married to a Boko Haram militant to save her father’s life. She added that she was frequently raped and beaten during the “marriage,” with other Boko Haram fighters helping her husband as he forced himself on her.

Consequently, many of the girls and young women face long-term issues relating to their health, have had limited access to education, and suffer stigma from their loved ones and their community.

Amnesty says the women and girls are speaking out to seek urgent help and support.

“These survivors are overlooked and abandoned. This needs to change … on their terms and with their active and meaningful participation. Their message must no longer be ignored: “Help us rebuild our lives.”

DRC deports two Ugandans over bank raid

0

The leaders in Mahagi district, Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo have deported two Ugandans who were arrested on allegations of attempted bank robbery.

Mr Daniel Okulu, a 27- year-old resident of Icheme Sub-county, Angom village in Oyam District and Mr Emmanuel Odong, a 25-year-old resident of Tega village, Bobi Sub-county in Omoro District were arrested on April 17, 2024 and spent a month in DRC detention before they were handed over to Ugandan security forces at the weekend.

“The duo will be transferred to Gulu Fourth Division court martial where they will be interrogated on the murder of a UPDF soldier and the robberies they committed before they fled to DR Congo,” Nebbi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Robert Abak said.
According to the RDC, the suspects were deported because they had others cases in Uganda.

“The leaders in DRC informed us about the two suspects who were arrested while attempting to rob a bank in Mahagi town. Congolese authorities liaised with us and had them deported because they had other cases in Uganda. This is why the Congolese leaders accepted their deportation and eventually trials in Uganda,” he said.

Mr Abak noted that while he was serving as Lira RDC, Okulu was one time shot in his shoulder at the scene of crime where they had gone to rob with his friends in Lira City but later disappeared.
However, the Nebbi District Police Commander, Mr Amisi Kayondo, said many suspected Ugandan criminals have found DRC a safe-haven after committing crimes in Uganda.

“Since Congolese authorities declined to show interest in trying the suspects, they will be transferred to Gulu where they committed the crime of murder and robberies and they will be produced before the military court for having participated in the murder of a UPDF officer,” he said.
In 2014, Nebbi District and DR Congo leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at eliminating any forms of insecurity and violence that would destabilize peace.

Part of the agreement stated that if any stolen car from either country is found in DRC, it would be returned to Uganda and if any criminal was hiding in either country, they would be deported and tried in the court of that respective country.

Let us condemn tribalism under the UPND administration – DR. M’MEMBE

HH BRINGING DIVISION IN THE COUNTRY

…let us condemn tribalism under the UPND administration – DR. M’MEMBE

Lusaka… Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) President Dr Fred M’membe has called for all stakeholders and the nation at large to condemn tribalism that is being perpetuated the UPND government.

And Dr M’membe has accused President Hakainde Hichilema of bringing division in the country as never witnessed before.

The SP Leader was speaking, Monday, when he featured on Prime Television Program dubbed ‘Oxygen of Democracy’.

He said the UPND government is a regime that is scared of honest criticism which can be seen in the way it stops opposition parties from holding rallies.

“I have never seen the worst form of tribalism as I’m seeing today, just look at the composition of the public sector, look at the job distributions and so on. And I’m not the only one talking about it, people are complaining about it, everyone is complaining about tribalism. And people are being intimidated from talking about tribalism,” he said.

“Mr Hichilema has divided the country in the way that this country has never been divided before. These are the worst tribalist but they want to shut everyone who is talking about tribe. But they won’t succeed, how many people will they arrest? You have the fire, but you want to deal with the smoke. Deal with the fire not the smoke”.

Dr M’membe said Government wants to intimidate people by charging them with hate speech when they are the ones practicing tribalism.

“These are fundamental human rights, the right to assemble, the right to protest, demonstrate and the freedom of speech. We fought for these liberties because these are fundamental human rights and when fundamental human rights are violated there is concern and we are concerned,” he said.

“We know they are scared of honest criticism and explanations from opposition parties as it will undermine their hold on to power if there is insecurity then why just the opposition, UPND holds rallies. It’s almost three years down the line and there has been no single rally for the opposition. This does not make sense because we have held rallies before in this country under a state of emergency”.

The opposition Socialist Party was on Saturday blocked from holding its public rally at Kitwe’s Changanamai grounds despite police giving them a go-ahead a day prior.

COURT UPDATE: SEAN TEMBO VS ATTORNEY GENERAL

COURT UPDATE: SEAN TEMBO VS ATTORNEY GENERAL – 2023CCZ0026

Lusaka, 11th June 2024

The matter in which Party President for the Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) sued President Hakainde Hichilema, through the Attorney General, in the Constitutional Court of Zambia, for Mr. Hichilema’s consistent and continous use of insulting language, came up for a hearing before a full bench of the Constitutional Court this morning.

In this matter, the Petitioner Mr. Sean Tembo is seeking a declaration from the Court that President Hakainde Hichilema’s use of insulting language contravenes articles 91(3)a, 91(3)d, 91(3)f, 92(1) and 173(1)a of the Republican Constitution, which requires a Republican President to conduct himself with dignity and integrity.

In an attempt to prove his case, the Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo submitted several pieces of evidence before Court, which include audio-video recordings in which President Hakainde Hichilema is captured using insulting language including the word “Chikala” , referring to his Predecessor Former President Edgar Lungu as a “Stupid Man”, using the word “ukuponoka ” which means pulling the foreskin of a penis backwards, etcetera. The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo has argued in his Petition that the behavior of President Hakainde Hichilema thus far is not presidential and lacks dignity and integrity.

The matter was filed by the Petitioner on 30th November 2023. However, before the matter could proceed to trial, the Attorney General raised a Preliminary Issue on 2nd February 2024, in which he was seeking to have the matter dismissed without being heard on its merits by the Court. The matter came up this morning for the parties to make verbal submissions to augment the written submissions that had already been filed by both parties, regarding the Preliminary Issue that had been raised by the Attorney General.

When the matter came up this morning, the Attorney General, through one of his Counsel, made an application to have the matter adjourned to a later day. This application to adjourn was made on the basis that the Attorney General wanted to have the Solicitor General; Mr. Marshal Muchende SC as one of the Counsel to make submissions before Court, and that Mr. Marshal Muchende was held up this morning as he was chairing a very important meeting.

The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo vehemently opposed the application to adjourn by the Attorney General. He argued that the main Counsel from the Attorney General’s Chambers who had been seized with conduct of the matter since inception, was before Court, and that any adjournment would be a waste of precious judicial resources. The Court ruled in favor of the Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo, and the application by the Attorney General to adjourn the matter was dismissed. The Court then proceeded to hear the substantive verbal submissions from the parties, regarding the Preliminary Issue which the Attorney General had raised regarding the Petition.

The Attorney General argued that the Petition should be dismissed because it was frivolous and vexatious and also because it allegedly did not disclose a cause of action nor the provisions of the Constitution that had been contravened. The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo argued that in a Constitutional matter, the cause of action arises when there is an alleged contravention of the Constitution, and that the Petition has clearly outlined the specific provisions of the Constitution which have allegedly been contravened due to President Hakainde Hichilema’s use of insulting language, these being articles 91(3)a, 91(3)d, 91(3)f, 92(1) and 173(1) of the Republican Constitution.

The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo further submitted that the Attorney General’s Preliminary Issue hinges on the same arguments that he had made in the main matter in his Affidavit in Opposition and List of Authorities and Skeleton Arguments in Opposition, and that the Preliminary Issue cannot be determined by the Court, without indirectly determining the main matter. In other words, the Attorney General was trying to compel the Court to determine the main matter using the back door, by pretending that it was a preliminary issue, thereby denying the Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo the opportunity to adduce evidence to support his case, and also denying the Court the opportunity to interrogate that evidence and arrive at an appropriate judgement, after full consideration of the totality of the case.

The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo requested the Court to dismiss the Attorney General’s Preliminary issues for being frivolous and lacking merit. The Court adjourned for 10 minutes, and when it reconvened, it rendered it’s ruling which was delivered by Judge Munsaluke. The Court dismissed the Attorney General’s Preliminary Issues for lack of merit. The Petitioner Mr Sean Tembo is representing himself in this matter.

IT’S IMMORAL TO CRY VICTIM OVER THE CIRCUMSTANCES YOU CREATED

Authored By Mupishi Jones

Zambians are getting fatigued with individuals who dare the law and when the law visits them, they develop a medical condition or faint, and when they wake up,they start crying victims!

During abduction,we hear they don’t faint, but when called to assist the police with information in order to arrest the people behind their abduction, we read or see them faint.

During their live broadcast always loaded with derogatory, tribal, defamatory, divisive language press conferences they appear very courageous almost Nelson Mandela’s,even daring the law, but when called by the law to account for their foul language, they develop medical conditions and faint! Real men and women never faint, they stand by their principles. Is their anyone who has ever heard of HH fainting or running away from this country even when he had the capacity to run away during his over 15 times arrests in opposition?

These are the same faces that constantly defend and side with law breakers.Do they want this country to become a country of lawlessness?

In Zambia today, we’re witnessing the same faces time and again crying victims of police victimisation and political persecution over the circumstances which themselves created!

These faces are not ordinary faces but prominent citizens of this country. Some of them claim to be “top-notch” lawyers, some of them law makers, some of them aspiring to be republican presidents, some of them men and women in religious robs.

These people know the laws of this country like the back of their hands. It was going to make sense if they were advocating for the amendment of the existing laws to suit what they want unlike fighting against those enforcing these existing laws.Do they expect those responsible to enforce these laws to let go? Won’t that be tantamount to lawlessness?

You provoke the law, when the law reacts, you faint, what’s that?

The police must stop treating such perpetual law breakers with kid gloves. This culture of daring the law and later cry victim over the circumstances one created for oneself is slowly being entrenched in our society.Citizens are not only watching but learning on how the same laws are applied on certain selected individuals in our country.

This country is not going to be determined by a few constitutional delinquents hiding behind political and tribal persecution. If one commits a crime, he or her is a criminal!

Injustice to one is Injustice to all

Injustice to one is Injustice to all

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The case of the abduction of Petauke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel JJ Banda is shocking and scandalous in the manner the State is handling it.

JJ Banda was abducted, found a few days later in a frightening state in Kafue, in unclear circumstances.

State Drama started at Kafue District Hospital that early morning, when the family began to fight with the State Police. The family wanted to take JJ to a private hospital recognizing the suspicious circumstances of his abduction.

The State would not take the family suggestion characterizing him as a man of high state interest.

Matters came to a crisis at Medlands Hospital in Lusaka where armed teams led by both Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Creto Kaanza and State House Security forcibly removed JJ Banda from Medlands Hospital.

This appeared to be his second abduction.

During the entire time of his missing, State House rogue media was running defamatory and scandalous stories against JJ Banda.

And remember before this, the UPND Provincial Committes held press conferences that denounced former President Edgar Lungu threatening his life and proposing to circumcise him.

The UPND Southern Province Committee declared Southern Province a no-go-area for Edgar Lungu.

They were reacting to this.

On Sunday, 19th May, a pentecost Sunday, Dunamis Christian Centre and Apostle Dr. Dan Pule hosted national prayers and invited leaders of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA).

At this Church Service, UKA leaders made various pronouncements but poignant, were remarks made by former President, Edgar Lungu.

He bemoaned the sufferings that Zambians were going through and asked them to prepare for elections in August 2026 or earlier.

The call for early elections is not new for UKA as they have repeatedly raised this matter at their press conferences.

Edgar Lungu also mocked those that underestimate his political prowess citing similar manner he was discounted in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

“I have since been President for seven years before.”

He said he had characteristics that Jesus Christ encouraged his followers to be. Be as innocent as a dove, but sly like a serpent quoting the gospel of Mathews 10;16.

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

He warned both Opposition leaders and followers alike to be wary of Hichilema’s dictatorship.

This is what brought a torrent of attacks against Edgar Lungu with immediate reactions led by Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa and the lined up UPND Officials.

UPND regarded this statement as treasonous and incitement.

So in the midst of this escalated political atmosphere and threats to life and arrest of the former President Edgar Lungu and the Opposition, JJ Banda was abducted.

Before JJ was discovered, the Opposition held a highly charged press conference calling for the immediate release of JJ Banda and placing his abduction squarely on government and the UPND officials that had issued criminal threats

This resulted in a serious crackdown where FDD President Edith Nawakwi, Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga, Lumezi MP Munir Zulu, Human Rights Activist Brebner Changala and Apostle Dr Dan Pule were arrested and given high and oppressive charges of sedition.

As expected, none from the UPND that issued similar tribal and seditious statements were ever arrested or called to the Police.

Although JJ Banda has been found and in a preliminary interview before his lawyer, Sakwiba Sikota SC, has named his abductors, the State has abandoned the search for his abductors.

At his recent Press Conference, President Hichilema, sadly, made JJ a subject of his remarks. He was not empathetic to JJs current health and traumatic status but proceeded to call him a thug, mirroring and echoing what the State House rogue media frequently publishes about JJ.

He directed that the old criminal cases be restarted. He probably was not aware that these matters were ended in court

Since then, the State appears to be no longer interested in his abductors but has instead moved to pursue old criminal charges against JJ Banda.

The family and health personnel have expressed concern on the state of JJ’s health as he has been suffering seizures and is apparently in great fear in what seems to be acute post traumatic experience from the abduction.

The Police has disregarded his health status and want to immediately interrogate and charge him for offences actually previously cleared by the courts.

This reminds me of Zambia’s biggest international scandal -the gold scandal

Authorities detained suspects that included Kenneth Kaunda International Airport Police Commanding Officer Robson Moonga, State Security Officer Francis Mateyo, Commercial Pilot Patrick Kawanu, Accountant Oswald Diangamo, and businessmen Shadrick Kasanda and Dr. Jim Belemu. The five Egyptian suspects include Walid Botros, Mounir Awad, Mohamed Gooda, Yasser Abdelghafor, and Michael Botros.

But soon the State shifted its focus and attention.

The Egyptians were released.

The Plane was released, earlier impounded because of our forfeiture laws that punishes, as a deterrent, property or assets used in the commission of crime.

Soon the powerful Zambians were also released .

The State proceeded to classify as utmost secret, away from the prying eyes of the media and public, the criminal trial in the Lusaka High Court.

The State has since preferred fresh armed robbery charges against Shadrick Kasanda and locked him away.

An injustice to one, is an injustice to all or we all get plucked out like chicken feathers, one by one.

I end with this poem, a 1946 post-war confessional prose by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller.

It is about the silence of German intellectuals and clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis’ rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group and the Holocaust against Jews.

It reads:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

In Spite Of What President Hichilema Has Put Me Through, I Will Make Sure He Is Protected When We Are In Power- Chilufya Tayali

0

EEP President Chilufya Tayali

IN SPITE OF WHAT PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAS PUT ME THROUGH, I WILL MAKE SURE HE IS PROTECTED, WHEN WE ARE IN POWER, INCLUDING THOSE OFFICERS AT FORCE HEADQUARTERS

I will never forget how General Yuyi beat the hell out of me at Force headquarters. I was made to lay down in a police van with two police officers (C5) stepping on me like a dead log.

We drove into Sikanze police camp probably with the view of them taking me into the command center where they could have tortured me more. A lot of people have been tortured there, I suspect JJ BANDA could have been taken there as well.

By God’s grace that mission failed and the officers where given other instructions to go and detain me in Chilanga.

I was still laying like a bag of charcoal, with my head pressed down, so that I am neither seen or see anything myself, on the back of that van with police still stepping on me for a distance of about 25 Km.

I have other similar incidences which would make me a bitter and vengeful person, but because of my strong Christian faith, I am able to forgive, though I can’t forget.

However, in spite of all that we have gone through, we should be able to forgive and move on.

We should reach a point where we look at each other as brothers and sisters, forgive and move on, we are all Zambians, that’s the attitude I want to have when I will be in Govt with President Edgar Chagwa Lungu

I don’t want to be part of a Govt that will be focused of persecuting people because they treated us bad, #No, this business of sorting out each other must end with the UPND Govt.

Under UKA, the focus should be developing the Nation, creating jobs not by making others jobless. There should be no more purging of workers in Govt institutions for us to employ our supporters.

Those who are employed, should remain employed unless they fall off according to their terms of conditions.

Those on suspension, or forced leave, should get back their jobs. People must have relief.

General Yuyi should never lose his job because he slapped me, if anything, that has a lot of energy and experience, we should just use him properly to crackdown criminality.

I have special respect of Mukale, the assistant to Yuyi, that man is wise, sober, a very dedicated police officer. He should not lose a job because served under HH and he is Tonga.

President Hichilema himself, must be respected and protected as former President. I will personally ensure that President Hichilema enjoys his life without being victimized.

Yes, I have suffered a lot under BaHakainde, especially separating my family, it really hurts me, but I will not make anyone pay for it.

After all, when you get into power, why continue fighting, forget all that, concentrate on making the lives of Zambians better.

FROM TEEN MUM & SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ZAMBIA’S FIRST FEMALE JUSTICE MINISTER

FROM TEEN MUM & SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ZAMBIA’S FIRST FEMALE JUSTICE MINISTER

The Inspiring Journey of Princess Kasune

Princess Kasune’s recent appointment as Zambia’s first-ever female Minister of Justice marks a historic milestone worthy of applause. Her remarkable journey from a double orphan, teenage mother at age 18, and school dropout to a national leader embodies hope, resilience, and determination. As the saying goes, “you can count the number of seeds in a fruit but you cannot count the number of fruits in a seed.”

Kasune was born on January 6, 1976, and her early life was fraught with challenges. At the tender age of 17, she lost both her parents to HIV, a devastating blow that drastically altered the course of her life. Just a year later, she faced another significant life-altering event: teenage pregnancy. Forced to drop out of school in grade 11, Kasune’s future seemed uncertain.

Despite these setbacks, Kasune’s indomitable spirit led her back to education. She returned to school, determined to complete her studies, and finished grade 12 with distinctions. Her academic achievements didn’t stop there; she pursued higher education relentlessly. Kasune now holds two master’s degrees—one in Nonprofit Administration from North Park University School of Business in Chicago, USA, and another in Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary. She is currently working towards her PhD in Gender Studies at UNZA.

Kasune’s contributions extend beyond academia. She was part of the delegation that met with former US President George W. Bush, leading to the approval of a US$15 billion fund for HIV and AIDS. This accomplishment underscores her commitment to fighting the very disease that claimed her parents’ lives and impacted her own.

In 1997, Kasune shared a personal revelation on her Facebook page: she had been diagnosed with HIV. Rather than letting this define her, she used her status to advocate for others, stepping into the political arena driven by a desire to make a tangible difference. Without any political pedigree or lineage, she was elected as a Member of Parliament for Keembe in 2016, a testament to her tenacity and the trust placed in her by the people.

Kasune’s appointment as Minister of Justice is not merely a personal triumph but a symbolic victory for every Zambian who dares to dream. She emphasized this in a heartfelt message on Facebook, addressing her story to teenage mothers, school dropouts, individuals living with HIV, and anyone who has faced rejection or doubted their worth.

“This is for you, teenage mother like I was once at 18 years of age, to all the school dropouts as I once was in grade 11, to all the HIV-positive people as I was once in 1997, to all those who were once told you will never amount to anything, to all who came to politics without any pedigree, to all the young girls and boys out there especially those who were once orphaned like me, a double orphan at 17 years losing both parents to HIV and AIDS, to all the women of Zambia, to all the once rejected,” Kasune wrote on Facebook.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength and potential within each person, regardless of their background or circumstances. It is a call to action for those who face similar challenges, encouraging them to persevere and strive for greatness.

MAIZE DEPOT ROBBERY IN KALOMO: POLICE ON THE HUNT FOR FIVE SUSPECTS

In the early hours of June 10th, 2024, a brazen robbery took place at a maize depot along Ngoma Road in Kalomo.

Five unidentified individuals are now the focus of a police investigation after they absconded with 78 bags of maize, each weighing 90 kilograms and collectively valued at K59,670.

The theft resulted in injuries to two individuals.

Felix Choonga, 38, of Bwacha Compound and the owner of the stolen goods, reported the incident to the police.

He recounted that the assailants had assaulted his security guard, Anorld Sianuma, 26, inflicting a severe cut on his right hand and head.

Oscar Mwiinga, also 26, a maize buyer, suffered two deep lacerations on his head.

The sequence of events unfolded on the evening of June 9th, 2024, when the two victims dined at the depot.

Mwiinga retired shortly after their meal, leaving Sianuma to continue his guard duties.

At approximately 01:00 the following morning, two assailants attacked Sianuma, striking him multiple times on the head and stabbing him with a screwdriver in the arm.

Mwiinga was awakened by Sianuma’s cries for help, only to be struck twice on the head himself.

The Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, detailed that the victims were rendered helpless and bound to a pole supporting the depot’s shelter, their hands tied behind their backs with wire, and their legs secured with a rope from a mosquito net.

Shortly thereafter, a white Toyota Canter with a green/blue ribbon arrived, and three additional individuals, including the driver, began loading the maize bags.

Mwiinga eventually freed himself and fled to the nearby bushes.

Upon realizing one victim had escaped, the robbers hastily departed towards Kalomo town.

The police were notified by the public and discovered Sianuma being freed by locals using pliers.

Both victims were transported to Request Mutanga Hospital, where Sianuma remains hospitalized due to significant blood loss from his head wounds, while Mwiinga was treated and released.

Howard University to return Diddy’s $1M donation after revoking his honorary degree

0

Howard University has stripped Sean “Diddy” Combs of his honorary degree. The historically-black university in Washington DC took the decision after CNN published a CCTV video of the hip-hop producer hitting an ex-girlfriend in a hotel hallway.

The university conferred the honorary degree on the musician in 2014. Also, the university would end a scholarship in his name and terminate a 2016 “gift agreement” with the rapper totaling $1 million.

The university said in a statement Friday that Diddy’s “behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”

“The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence,” the statement further noted.

Diddy’s Apology

The embattled music executive took to social media to issue an apology after the assault video popped up. The 54-year-old’s apology came after he initially denied allegations of rape and abuse from Ventura, Face2Face Africa previously reported. Combs and Ventura started dating in 2007 and had an on-and-off relationship for over 10 years. The American music mogul signed Cassie to his label in 2005 when she was 19 and he was 37.

“My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video,” Combs said in a video on his Instagram account. “I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” he continued.

“I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”

Ventura, 37, initially filed a lawsuit in New York federal court alleging that Combs brought her into his “ostentatious, fast-paced, and drug-fueled lifestyle” after she met him.

The lawsuit further alleged that Combs was “prone to uncontrollable rage” and physically abused her during their relationship including punching, beating, kicking and stomping on her. It alleged that Combs urged Ventura to use drugs and forced her to have sex with other men while he masturbated and filmed. The lawsuit was later dismissed after both parties reached an undisclosed settlement.

In the video, Combs, who is wrapped in a white towel, is seen running through the hotel hallway elevator section and later appearing to confront Ventura. He is then seen throwing her to the ground by yanking her by the neck. Ventura is seen motionless on the floor. Combs is then seen kicking her twice before dragging her toward a room. Combs is also later seen sitting down and throwing an object toward Ventura’s direction.

Per CNN, the incident happened at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. Ventura’s attorney, Meredith Firetog, responded to Combs’ apology, saying that the 54-year-old’s “most recent statement is more about himself than the many people he has hurt.”

“When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday. That he was only compelled to ‘apologize’ once his repeated denials were proven false shows his pathetic desperation, and no one will be swayed by his disingenuous words.”

Ventura’s other attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, also commented on the video. “The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office responded to the video in a statement. “We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles. We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch,” the statement said.

“If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted. As of today, law enforcement has not presented a case related to the attack depicted in the video against Mr. Combs, but we encourage anyone who has been a victim or witness to a crime to report it to law enforcement or reach out to our office for support from our Bureau of Victims Services.”

Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima feared dead in plane crash

…Chakwera cancels foreign trip
Chilima’s phone last available at 10 am
Fears are mounting that Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has died in a crash landing in Chikangawa forest. This after his chopper failed to land at Mzuzu Airport this morning.

Information that Malawi24 has sourced indicated that Chilima was aboard a Malawi Defence Force chopper to attend a funeral of lawyer Ralph Kasambara. However, the plane failed to land at the airport due to bad weather.

It was on return that the plane is feared to have crashed. According to sources, a crash was eyewitnessed in the Chikangawa forest area. It is believed that it is the plane carrying Chilima.

Government has confirmed that authorities have lost contact with the place since 10am.

“The Office of the President and Cabinet wishes to inform the general public that the Malawi Defense Force Aircraft that left Lilongie today, Monday 10th June 2024 at 09:17 Hours, carrying the Vice President, the Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and nine others, failed to make its scheduled landing at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02.

“All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the Aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far. As such, the Commander of the Malawi Defense Force, General Valentino Phiri, has since informed His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the incident”, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Collen Zimba, has said in a statement.

Meanwhile, government has also confirmed that President Lazarus Chakwera has cancelled his trip to the Bahamas due to the incident.

“President Chakwera has since canceled his scheduled departure for the Bahamas and ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft” added Zimba.

Other sources have said that Chilima’s phone was last available at around 10:30 am this morning. The plane was expected back in Lilongwe at most an hour after return from Mzuzu.

Secretary to Cabinet Press Briefing highly Irregular

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Monday, 10th June 2024

This is a follow up article to my earlier article titled; “Civil Service in its Current Form is in Peril”.

Following the Press Conference held by President Hakainde Hichilema in which he raised matters regarding national unity, rule of law, corruption and responses to the disaster and food insecurity that was partly caused by drought, he directed that the Secretary to Cabinet reduces his remarks and utterances to actionable policies, programs, measures and projects to respond to his concerns.

To this effect, the Secretary to Cabinet, Mr. Patrick Kangwa proceeded to effect some of the decisions and policy pronouncements as directed by the President.

IRREGULAR PRESS CONFERENCE

Mr. Kangwa proceeded to hold his own press conference to respond and announce actions taken.

He pronounced that all recruitments, transfers, promotions and dismissals must not not be based on tribaslim or regionalism but must reflect the national character of the country.

Mr. Kangwa also announced new austerity measures regarding travel and holding of workshops outside public facilities and called for prudence in the application of public resources.

He directed the immediate installation of alternative energy sources to supplement ZESCO supply for public buildings as the loadshedding will be experienced for sometime and required that public service delivery and work of public service workers were not disrupted.

He also directed civil servants to apportion their own land to grow their own food. “Spare a hectare and plant some maize” he said.

He also encouraged public service workers to set up solar systems at their private homes.
He also banned civil servants from driving government vehicles.

Now, this approach is totally wrong and misunderstands pronouncements made by an already bewildered and bemused President, a President that appears to know very little about civil service regulations and the operations of the public sector, in general.

PROCEDURE IMPROPRIETY
The action by the Secretary to Cabinet is riddled with procedural impropriety.

He is Chief Government advisor to the President on the Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet, conveys and implements Cabinet decisions through a Memorandum or Cabinet Circular.

He cannot make those decisions.

What was expected of the Secretary to Cabinet was to prepare and process a Cabinet Memorandum (Cab Memo) to seek counsel and approval of Cabinet, the pronouncements, remarks and utterance made by the President and turn them into official policies.
This is because some pronouncements have legal, administrative and policy implications.
For example, the pronouncement on austerity measures requires Ministry of Finance which runs the Budget to consider parts and travels that must be exempted.
The ban and cancellation of GRZ competence certificates for senior servants which is aimed to prohibit them from driving and save costs required that the Ministry of Transport and Communication handles such a matter.

The Order for civil servants to grow their own food and erect their own solar units at their own homes, is merely rhetoric and advisory as implementation of such a programme may require government support in the form of loans, land and solar equipment.

At the moment the civil servants can barely afford their lives and survive, it’s a hand-to-mouth scenario because of the meagre salaries hit hard by inflation and the high cost of living.

CONCLUSION

Therefore the pronouncements made by Mr. Kangwa violate procedures, may lack legality and may go to interfere with conditions of service provided for civil servants.

Further, the wanton abuse of transfers and recruitment processes that has resulted in massive victimisation of civil servants and the hire of a tribal cabal to run the civil service, have occurred right under the nose of Mr. Kangwa.

Therefore the rhetoric on national unity by both President Hichilema and Mr. Kangwa are a clear mockery to the national values and principles that must be abided by and promoted as enshrined in Article 8 and 9 of the Republican Constitution.

For these pronounced policy actions to enjoy legality and legitimacy, Mr. Kangwa is encouraged to process and seek Cabinet approval.

RESTRICTIONS ON CIVIL SERVANTS’ USE OF GOVT MOTOR VEHICLES- Fred M’membe

RESTRICTIONS ON CIVIL SERVANTS’ USE OF GOVT MOTOR VEHICLES

The directive by Secretary to the Cabinet Mr Patrick Kangwa that restricts civil servants in the mainstream civil service to use allocated government motor vehicles only for official business between 08:00 and 17:00 hours is certainly contentious and raises several concerns.

Firstly, the policy may indeed be seen as discriminatory against those in the mainstream civil service, especially if other branches or departments are not subject to similar restrictions. Those in parastatals and quasi-government institutions receive a vehicle maintenance allowance, enabling them to maintain personal vehicles. These groups can also procure personal vehicles through the Public Service Microfinance scheme, a benefit that is not extended to mainstream civil servants.

Secondly, the directive could negatively impact service delivery. Civil servants who rely on government vehicles for commuting might face difficulties in getting to work punctually or attending to urgent matters outside regular business hours. This could lead to delays in the execution of their duties and overall inefficiency in the civil service.

Thirdly, the requirement for civil servants to use public transportation or their own vehicles to commute could impose additional financial and logistical burdens on them. This might reduce morale and potentially lead to lower productivity.

To address these issues, the government might consider several actions but not limited to the following:

1. Uniform Policy Application
Ensuring that the policy is applied uniformly across all branches of the greater public service to avoid perceptions of discrimination.

2. Compensation and Support
Providing allowances or compensations to those who are now required to use their own vehicles or public transportation for commuting.

3. Operational Flexibility
Allowing for some flexibility in the use of government vehicles, especially in cases where civil servants need to work outside of regular hours or handle emergencies.

4. Monitoring and Review
Continuously monitoring the impact of the policy on service delivery and making adjustments as necessary to ensure it does not adversely affect the efficiency and effectiveness of the civil service.

While the intent behind the policy may be to reduce misuse of government vehicles and cut costs, it is crucial that its implementation does not undermine the ability of civil servants to perform their duties effectively.

New Defence Force – Dickson Jere

New Defence Force
By Dickson Jere

Cabinet last week approved a proposal to introduce a new Bill in Parliament that will effectively restructure our Defence Force and enhance its operation.

Even though the approval by Cabinet was in principle, it will be important for Zambians to see and debate the Bill effectively so that we have a modern and developed Defence Force in Zambia that can respond to current problems.

The government said it will repeal and replace the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws, which was enacted in 1964. In the same vein, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Act of 1971 will also be repealed in order to bring it in line with the latest developments.

These laws have been in place from 1964 and 1971 without much change and therefore the need to update them is more than welcome. I hope those with military backgrounds – especially former Commanders – will appear before the Parliamentary Committee to give their insights on how we can make our Defence Force effective.

I am more interested to see how the Bill Will deal with some old proposals such as having a centralised command of the Defence Force with one top Commander. (KK tried it but I am not sure why it failed).

The role of ZNS should also be clearly spelt out especially that the government said it will also touch the ZNS Act. Will it be transformed into a full land army? Can Zambia have two land Forces? Will it be infused on the Defence Act? At the moment ZNS is part of the Defence Act and operate through its own law even though in 2016, the Constitution recognised its existence.

What about the rank structure? Former Commanders have written about Zambia Airforce (ZAF) wanting to have own rank structure that captures the history of Airforce…ranks such Flight Lieutenant and all…currently, the Defence Force uses one rank structure that is believed to be from Zambia Army.

I wish we can have a sober debate on the proposed new Defence Act devoid of any political considerations. I am looking forward to the Bill when it is published…wide consultation will also be required!

Fred M’membe is missing the point; President Hichilema is trying hard to reunite this nation

Fred M’membe is missing the point; President Hichilema is trying hard to reunite this nation

Whenever most politicians write or make certain pronouncements, they lamentably fail to raise issues of substance other than goading the President into confrontation, notable among them, Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe, once a capitalist running a thriving business empire spanning from newspaper publication, courier services, trucking business and real estate’s, among others.

For instance, commenting on the press briefing hosted by the President at State House the other day to address a number of burning issues where he took time to warn that issuing careless tribal remarks shall soon be a non-bailable offence attracting a lengthy jail term; M’membe woke up with the following observations, “The problem of tribalism cannot be simply looked at as a problem of speech (tribal hate speech). There’s a need to look at the practices (tribal practices) that trigger the tribal talk. An audit of Mr. Hichilema’s appointments to various positions in state and government institutions will reveal very serious tribal biases.”

M’membe knows deep down the pit of his heart that he’s being economical with the truth. It is common knowledge that this former capitalist-turned-politician has always harboured corrosive hatred for President Hichilema since taking over from the late founding leader of UPND, Anderson Mazoka. Before former President Edgar Lungu ‘obliterated’ his, The Post Newspapers, he effectively used it as a weapon to demonise, scandalise and humiliate the party to such an extent of lampooning it as a “Bantustan!”

In our book, One Zambia One Nation; how various Presidents have navigated around the issue since Independence, we present empirical evidence of how our respective Presidents have tried to help reunite the nation by embracing every ethnic grouping in their governments or not. In the interest of space though, we shall restrict ourselves to NOMINATED MPs. There may have been two compelling reasons why our forefathers saw it befitting to introduce the aspect of nominated MPs: (1) in the case of the appointing authority hunting for individuals with exceptional abilities or capabilities to sit in their cabinet and such isn’t readily available in parliament, they may extend the search outside the August house and (2) in the event of a winning political party failing to secure parliamentary seats in certain parts of the country, a president may nominate individuals from those particular regions for the sake of enhancing national unity.

As they say, figures don’t lie; we shall leave up to the readers to conclude for themselves which Presidents have always gone an extra mile putting our “One Zambia One Nation” motto into practice as of course envisaged by our forefathers. Please refer to the tables hereunder:

The Civil Service in its current form is in Peril

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The trouble with the position of Secretary to Cabinet is that over the decades, it has been stripped of it’s powers and authority and it’s functions dispersed and diluted.

The Secretary to Cabinet, other than his role as a Secretary to Cabinet, heads Cabinet Office, the highest administrative Office in Zambia with an overarching responsibility of superintending over the Public Service to achieve national strategic objectives espoused in development plans.

Cabinet Office derives its statutory mandate from Article (176) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016 on the creation of the Office of the Secretary to the Cabinet.

The Secretary to Cabinet is now a bull dog without teeth. His powers have been reduced to ceremonial roles and letter writing.

It’s for this reason that over 412 qualified senior civil servants have been removed from various ministries and packed at Public Service Management Division (PSMD) and without shame, an openly tribal clique has replaced them.

It is also for this reason that the President and his Ministers are illegally interfering in procurement processes especially for large and multi-million procurements, and the day to day running of ministries and government agencies.

While Cabinet Office is designed to be literally the Presidential Delivery Unit of development and delivery of policies and projects, former Prime British Minister Tony Blair has formed his own Presidential Delivery Unit, complete with independent office and new logo under President Hichilema’s State House.

Further new Commissions from Teachers, Local Government, Police and Prisons, Public Service e.t.c were formed and the Secretary to Cabinet has limited role in supervising and ensuring that he is their head.

While the Secretary to Cabinet is also expected to supervise Permanent Secretaries, this is not possible as these officers are direct appointees of the President and they do well to ignore the SC’s toothless supervision. He can’t fire them!

Now the Secretary to Cabinet is reduced to banning the holding of workshops in private lodges or pronouncing travel bans, both which are never followed or adhered to. How many times have you heard about such bans?

We need to restore the civil service to a professional entity it was designed to, autonomous and non-partisan.

And until the powers of the Secretary to Cabinet are reinstated including the appointment and supervision of Permanent Secretaries who head and run ministries, provinces, local government and government agencies, the civil service will remain in total disarray.

This will allow Cabinet Office and the civil service to deliver on its mandate of policy development, policy delivery and public service delivery.

Presidents will continue to grope in the dark, yeilding to very expensive but poor advice such as the setting up of parallel offices such as the Presidential Delivery Unit.

Because the presidency has hijacked The civil service it has now evolved to a bureaucratic forest and nightmare which is difficult to navigate to deliver public service and public good in time.

Because of its rules, regulations and circulars, many times designed to curb theft and abuses on one hand, and the force of State House on it on another, the Civil Service has become a stumbling block to those keen to implement quick fixes and political projects and is clearly frustrating especially to politicians with a limited five year mandate to deliver.

UPND MUST BE EXTRA CAREFUL AND NOT WEAKEN ITSELF

CIC EDITORIAL ANALYSIS.

UPND MUST BE EXTRA CAREFUL AND NOT WEAKEN ITSELF.

We covered the presidential presser where his Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema was very much categorical and precise on the issue of cadres. He was very much clear. For others this is the first time they heard him speak so but for some of us we have been around its exactly what he is. He is a noble man with upright thinking and zeal to do the way of things. We ran a publication when the issue of Jay Jay Banda emerged were we stated that when it comes to UPND they are everything you can call them yes but pulling a mammoth operation such as abduction or indeed abducting someone especially the MP no matter the nature or gravity of the case or issue there is certainly no one in UPND capable of doing such. When such discussions even start they cannot even go anywhere near the execution level data will be all over and just no official can even entertain such a topic before it even gets to HH its a non starter. He is simply not capable of such.

UPND during opposition were victims of enormous provocations and attacks but because of the nature of its leader on top they where perceived weak not because they couldn’t fight back but simply the structural hierarchy is of noble members where its unfashionable to table a violent topic in UPND to attack anyone. Because of this background we generate this article following the recent arrests that are so alarming and concerning especially involving the UPND councilor for Chinika Ward Mr Ngoma and or indeed Ms Munemeli. The spree orders to arrest anyone who was involved the day of the burial is a very sad state of affairs politically on so many fronts.

First thing first this was a leadership error at structural level where those cadres fall in such as youth chairmens starting from the national to the wards they must take responsibility and account how their members moved, who sanctioned them, who armed them, who allowed them to do that which they did. An event like a funeral of a politician draws all people from across the sections but youths or indeed cadres move in a different way they are clustered exactly where they come from wards, Constituencies, stations or indeed barracks as they call themselves and there is leadership among these people no matter how disorganised you may see them making noise there is always one person called Commander in charge of them forming a buffer between them and leaders. We say it’s a leaderships failure from the national youth wing down to the ward youth leaders because in a right way of doing things there was enough time to issue a memo how the burial day ought to be the Do’s and the Don’ts from the top leadership there such as the SG down to the responsible structures etc no pangas, catapults, Golfsticks, beating, insulting or indeed looting etc non would have happened if UPND leadership from the SG to the national youth leaders down to Ward leaders if indeed they know what HH has been saying about cadrerism they know this. What we saw that day tells us that there was non interms of Memo, orders, instructions etc it was free for all obviously the line leadership had little or no knowledge of how people will be or come to take stock who came and how they behaved etc. Those who managed to sponsor some busses out of good will by virtue of the funeral obviously it was an error or unforseen that such could happen, to the worst case UPND could have been infiltrated by PF or just any non political players such as junkies with ill intentions taking advantage of the mob psychology.

All these must be factored by the police before raiding the so called UPND cadres however the situation is different because the Commander in Chief ordered for the results and the police had to deliver no matter what.

We are not convinced that the people such as Masautso Ngoma as a leader as he is can be involved in the aggravated robbery activity at all. Like we said UPND membership especially at leadership level are not dramatic people capable of coordinating so called robberies using cadres or themselves no we know these people. In one news item we detected some fixing going on between leaders themselves as it stated that Mr Ngoma the councilor for Chinika Ward has been unfairly treated and implicated this we agree on the base that we are not convinced he is capable of such accusations however we opt to remain silence wether or not internal fixing among members themselves could also play a role in implicating each other.

It will be difficult to blame the police on this they are following orders, the loser here is UPND itself. When the President said he does not want to be a product of thuggery he meant well but if his people do not take his words well or misinterpret him it will be bad politically during the time of elections or campaigns.

Change is a process. Cadres especially in UPND have a history how they became that because the tension and period of cadrerism from PF was so hot that one needed to play the very dirty game to match the opponent.

Now that PF was defeated a robust sensitization and transformational ideas and reforms where supposed to be in place especially to cadres or exclusively to cadres because these people are also key stakeholders and vital players in the political realms in this nation. Cadres as you call them where the only line of security defense to these leaders in opposition facing heavily armed adversaries in PF you can’t just discard them like that. Yes they are told no more violent in markets, beating people or insulting etc but more is needed beyond just media pronouncements and police deployment on them is the last thing or option you can do to them because their interpretation will be different. These same cadres are also human beings who can transform into better citizens and change for better. The question one begs to ask is that, has there been a robust sensitization policy in UPND when it comes to who was a cadre in UPND in listening to the side of their story in a language they understand without media or using force on them or they are just left like that to fend for themselves because cadres are no longer needed?.

Zambian Political research indicates that cadres are vital players in the political landscape if well managed and coordinated. Therefore as our headline states UPND must be very careful and not weaken itself at the end of the day. We strongly believe that youth leadership from national to the wards must also take responsibility and center stage in helping the police to account who falls in line and number you may find that others just came for sole purpose of causing that confusion under disguise as UPND cadres and now the full wrath of the presidential order landing on innocent people that had little or nothing to do with the vice. Going forward cadres must be classified as youths under the leadership of its hierarchical structure and order from top to bottom only then will there be a proper accountability who is who and it Will be easy to offload the presidential guidance and order of transition from thuggery behaviour of beating people and insulting to good political youths to access skills development and empowerment new dawn is offering etc.

OUR VIEW ON SECRETARY TO THE CABINET’S PRONOUNCEMENTS-Fred M’membe

OUR VIEW ON SECRETARY TO THE CABINET’S PRONOUNCEMENTS

Mr. Patrick Kangwa, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service in Zambia, spoke to civil servants on Friday about national unity. However, how can he speak about national unity when, as of March this year, 414 civil servants from provinces outside of Zambezi were sent home? In the Ministry of Science and Technology, all directors have been placed in holding positions at the Public Service Management Division and replaced with individuals from predominantly one ethnic group.

Additionally, concerns about ethnic representation extend across various government institutions, including:

– Bank of Zambia
– National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA)
– Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board
– Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA)
– National AIDS Council
– Emoluments Commission
– Civil Service Commission
– Local Government Service Commission
– Teaching Service Commission
– Correctional Service Commission
– Zambia Bureau of Standards
– Pension and Insurance Authority (PIA)
– Zambia Airports Corporation Limited
– Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
– ZESCO
– National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA)
– Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)
– Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH)
– Zambia Development Agency (ZDA)
– Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA)
– Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO)
– Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia
– Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA)
– Zambia Tourism Agency

These issues highlight significant disparities in the distribution of civil service positions and question the government’s commitment to genuine national unity as well as the application of national values and principles, as mandated by Article 8 of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

On the point that recruitment in the public service should be based on competence. Can the Secretary to the Cabinet say with a clear conscience that recruitments since August 2021 have been based on competence? This nation has witnessed promotions and recruitments driven by patronage rather than merit. For instance, how did a well-known UPND cadre from the UK, Larry Mweetwa, skip three positions to become a Director in the Ministry of Science and Technology just six months after being employed in the civil service? Mweetwa’s case is not an isolated one, there are many other similar cases of this nature.

The prevailing tribalism and regionalism in recruitments and promotions are unprecedented in the country’s history.

Moreover, the Secretary to the Cabinet mentioned that all Service Commissions and Permanent Secretaries should epitomise national unity. How is that possible when they are responsible for sending home competent civil servants, resulting in an incompetent civil service in government and a competent civil service at home receiving a free salary? This situation not only wastes public resources but also erodes public trust in the government’s ability to foster a truly unified and effective public service. How can you sacrifice experience and competence for tribal or regional preferences?

Supporting enterprise by holding workshops at various lodges, hotels, and conference centres is beneficial for the Zambian economy because the government is the largest buyer of goods and services. This approach not only helps to stimulate local businesses and create jobs but also promotes the hospitality and service industries, which are crucial for economic growth. By utilizing these facilities, the government can ensure that its spending directly contributes to the prosperity of local enterprises and the overall economy.

Therefore, the call by the Secretary to the Cabinet to stop holding workshops outside the office will harm small and medium enterprises. The government, as the largest buyer of goods and services, plays a crucial role in supporting local businesses. Workshops held at lodges, hotels, and conference centres stimulate the economy by providing vital revenue streams for these enterprises. Ending this practice abruptly would significantly impact their financial health and broader economic growth.

Secondly, most of these ministries were designed a long time ago for a different world. They don’t have sufficient space for various departments to conduct workshops concurrently. This call is practically impossible.

Thirdly, our civil servants, especially those in mainstream government, are poorly paid. Workshops come with some incentives that help empower them financially. If this practice is stopped without increasing their salaries, the Secretary to the Cabinet is pushing them into very serious financial hardships while the President, Ministers and Permanent Secretaries continues to earn allowances from their endless trips. In such a situation, it is those who have more who should be asked to sacrifice, not those who have less.

We also know that the directive that all ministries should procure alternative energy sources to mitigate the impact of load shedding is a well-calculated move by some senior government officials to make money. These officials are influencing procurement decisions to benefit specific suppliers.

Mnangagwa offers hyenas to Putin who says “we’ve got enough in Europe”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Zimbabwean counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa shared a laugh during a tense debate on nuclear diplomacy on Friday, as they discussed how to deal with the real and metaphorical “hyenas” threatening their countries.

During a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), political scientist Sergey Karaganov urged Putin to update Russia’s nuclear doctrine to allow nuclear retaliation against countries that strike Russia with conventional weapons.

With multiple Western nations – including the US, France, and Germany – recently giving Kiev permission to use their missiles in long-range strikes on Russian territory, Karaganov argued that these countries have grown complacent and need to be reminded of Russia’s nuclear capabilities.

“They have gone mad, especially the Europeans,” he told Putin. “It’s how animals behave. If there is a herd of hyenas or wild dogs and you’ve got a stick, you can keep them at bay.

“But there’s a high chance that they will tear your clothes, and if you get tired they will bite you to death. If you can kill a couple of them then they will disperse.”

“President Mnangagwa knows about the behaviour of hyenas,” Karaganov continued, before asking the Zimbabwean leader: “Do you agree Mr. President, that this is how you deal with hyenas?”

“We do have lots of hyenas in Zimbabwe, but we keep them in the national parks,” Mnangagwa replied. “We have no problems with them, but they breed a lot, and if there is anybody who wants them, we are ready to donate,” he added, to laughter from the audience.

“Well we’ve got hyenas of our own in Europe,” Putin responded.

Russian nuclear doctrine has not changed since 2010. It allows for the use of atomic weapons in the event of a nuclear first strike on its territory or infrastructure, or if the existence of the Russian state is threatened by either nuclear or conventional weapons.

“I do not believe that it is the case now,” Putin said, adding that Russia “needs no nuclear weapons to achieve victory” in Ukraine. However, Putin noted that changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine “are not ruled out.”

South Africa’s elections body IEC taken to court on vote-rigging allegations

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has reaffirmed its position that it would be taking, on an urgent basis, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) of South Africa to court over election rigging allegations, following days of speculation.

The party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, intends approaching the court, seeking for the IEC to set aside the 2024 election results following objections by various parties.

It will be the first time since the dawn of democracy that the IEC would be hauled before court over results. They were declared at the Results Operations Centre in Midrand last Sunday.

Various political parties that contested in the elections have teamed up to challenge the outcome as null and void.

Leading the charge is Zuma’s MKP with, among other smaller parties, the African Congress for Transformation (ACT) led by Ace Magashule, a former ANC secretary-general who also started a splinter party.

The parties had planned to file the court papers on Monday but, according to insiders, were still consulting and would be doing so “imminently”.

In a statement released yesterday, MKP said it would consider entering the National Assembly when it opens after the conclusion of the court process.

The splinter party has made significant strides, collecting 58 seats in Parliament considering its the first time it contests elections.

In recent days, reports were rife that the party was planning on boycotting the first sitting of Parliament over discrepancies and irregularities about the election process.

“The MK Party will only consider entering Parliament upon the conclusion of our imminent urgent court applications, where we will present sufficient evidence demonstrating that the IEC rigged the elections to the detriment of the MK Party and other parties,” wrote the party’s spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.

He added that his organisation had noted with concern some “mischievous” media reports suggesting that its 58 members of Parliament had changed their stance regarding their decision not to attend Parliament.

“We want to make it clear that due to the glaring election rigging by the IEC, which led to the massive theft of MK party votes… we wish to reiterate that our position remains unchanged, and that we will attend Parliament proceedings only based on the outcomes of the court proceedings,” Ndhlela said.

He said while the party respected its constituency and the people who elected their members in Parliament their duty was to change the “current neo-liberal Constitution and ensuring expropriation of land without compensation”.

“Among others, we believe that voices of all our voters, are incomplete… attending the first sitting of Parliament without all our votes and voices being counted would betray our commitment to unity and democratic values where every voice and wish deserves to be heard,” Ndhlela said.

He further said that through the election period, MK Party had stood firm in its commitment to political integrity and expediency.

“Hence, we cannot stand by while crucial institutions like the IEC are manipulated for political ends. Our resolve remains strong, and we will continue to fight for the true representation of our voters in Parliament and ensure that every voter’s desire find expression in Parliament,” he said.

However, the governing ANC, speaking at a media briefing after the announcement of the results on Sunday, said it had accepted the results as the governing party.

The party’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, admitted that the MKP had caught them off-guard.

“We, as the ANC, are going to meet on Monday in order to analyse the phenomenon of the MK Party in Mpumalanga and KZN.

“We have got to analyse the Zuma phenomenon as it goes back to that deep analysis that we as the ANC are going to conduct. We can’t do that if we start blaming structures,” said Mbalula.

When it comes to the impact the MKP and the Zuma factor had on the ultimate results, Mbalula said in spite of certain projections, the governing party had under-estimated its impact on the election results.

“We knew Zuma would get support, but not this much. Our biggest worry was the IFP in KZN and the posture other royal houses had taken as it was moving away from us and entered politics by aiding and abetting the IFP. As we went into the elections, everyone wanted us down, including the media,“ said Mbalula.

The IEC said last week that it was not rushing the results, but were announcing them within the seven days after elections.

UPDATE ON MAY 2024 BUDGET RELEASES

By MFNP

In May 2024, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning released K14.4 billion to finance #publicservice delivery. Of this amount, K1 billion was released for transfers, subsidies and social benefits, K1.8 billion for implementation of various developmental programmes and general operations, while K328.8 million was released for capital expenditure. Furthermore, K7.3 billion was spent on both domestic and external debt service, while K3.9 billion was released for the public service wage bill.

As indicated above, the Treasury released K1 billion for transfers, subsidies and social benefits, of which: K359 million was disbursed for the operations of #GrantAided Institutions (GAIs); K250 million for the countrywide Social Cash Transfer Programme; K100.6 million for the Food Security Pack Programme; and, K291.1 million as a grant to #ZambiaRevenueAuthority to support operations and domestic resource mobilisation efforts. And to ensure that road infrastructure projects remain on course, the Treasury also released K328.8 million under the #capitalexpenditure category.

For general operations, K1.8 billion was released to facilitate implementation of operational programmes under various government institutions. Notably, among the releases was K602 million for programmes supported by #cooperatingpartners and K160 million for procurement of drugs and other medicals supplies. The Government also spent a total of K3.9 billion on costs relating to the wage bill for various public service workers, including #health, #teaching, and overseas allowances for diplomats in Zambia’s missions abroad.

Furthermore, and in line with #Government’s commitment to reduce indebtedness, a sum of K7.3 billion was released of which, K4.1 billion went to the payment of external debt service while K3.2 billion was for domestic service.

Reflecting on the budget releases for May, 2024, #Finance and #NationalPlanning Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane says the #treasury will continue to pursue #transformationalreforms and initiatives aimed at attaining an optimum value for money equilibrium in public #servicedelivery.

The Minister reiterates that the Staff-Level-Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (#IMF) on economic policies and reforms – following the successful third review of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) Programme; which includes a request by the Zambian Government to the IMF Board to access an additional US$ 388 million to preserve macroeconomic stability and support #Zambia’s response to external shocks, and the signing of GRANT AGREEMENTS with the World Bank for the US$ 100 million National Energy Advancement & Transformation (NEAT) Programme and the US$ 157 million for the Second Phase of the #Girls’ Education & Women’s Empowerment & Livelihoods Project (GEWEL -2) Programme, are not only clear testimonies of the confidence of the international community in the economic transformation reforms being pursued by the Government but also reflect the international communities firm willingness to work with Zambia, albeit under difficult circumstances exacerbated by the #drought situation which has led to widespread power and food supply challenges.

GHANA: Power exports to Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso cancelled

GHANA: Power exports to Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso cancelled

…as incubator failure leads to infant death

Amb. Anthony Mukwita

9th June 2024

Winding up the international news roller-coaster is ever an anti-climax for me.

It’s hard to choose what news cord to close the week on especially if you love good news as much as I do, I am incurable romantic myself if truth be told.

But alas, good news has been extremely elusive lately, not just in our country Zambia but beyond the sub-region so hold onto the candle of hope, and the real wax candle because you will need it tonight.

High cost of living, fuel prices dominate the media space as hope fadeth away and I don’t wanna be a harbinger here, don’t kill the messenger.

Today, however, outside Zambia a story in Ghana regarding a young lady called Rashida caught my attention like a lightning bolt.
Rashida´s child died in an incubator in Ghana because the ZESCO of Ghana switched off power during a routine schedule the same way our ZESCO does daily.

Rashida as you can imagine is not only grief stricken but livid at the fact that her child died has died because the power company failed in its job. Theres no excuse to that, you can’t compensate a mother for a loss of a child.

Subsequently, Ghanaians took to the streets today demonstrating against the death and asking Mr Nana Akuffo Addo who promised “no load shedding in 2016” during a presidential campaign to step down. Familiar?

The democracy playing field in Ghana still remains high so no one has been arrested for asking President to ´step down´, in Zambia today you have to be careful what you say and where.

But whatever you want to say about President Addo´s government, there´s kudos you must give him, he has stopped power exports to neighbouring countries, Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in direct response to the protests.
He doesn’t see any sense in exporting power to neighbours at whatever coast as babies die in Ghana.

In Zambia ZESCO management, board and others stay in office draw salaries as Zambians are reduced to fewer and fewer minutes of electricity and shut down poultry and salon business, in an already depressed economy.

The difference between Zambia and Ghana I suppose is that Ghanaians can heckle the President to stop exporting power, in Zambia you can’t even speak against some simple power utility company boss or board chair.
Failure as a corporate is not a punishable offence, we reward you for that in Zambia.
It´s business as usual until we start going without power for days, dead small business shops strewn along the streets abound.

As we try to ´fix the puzzle´ Ghana has stopped power exports to neighbours to save more children from dying in incubators. A challenge for Zambian journalists.

WE ARE NOT SAFE.WE ARE IN THE HANDS OF VERY FUNNY PEOPLE.

The police came to my house to try and abduct me .They came in huge numbers (16 officers) for what as if i had committed a crime and then Rae Hamonga makes a useless statement that i had ignored their call out.

Who did they give that call out to?? I’m a person of fixed aboard and the police can easily call me as they have done before and i have always complied. How then can the police come to ambush me as if I’m a common criminal…

How can the state be lying and how we can feel safe with them.Loot at this:.

1.Hon Jay Jay is found bruised and the medical reports and the policel indicates as such but Hon Jack Mwimbu holds a press briefing denying that Jay was perfectly fine with not injuries..meanwhile the guy was perfectly fine has been in a state hospital for two weeks now.How is a person who was fine supposed to be in hospital for two weeks.Note that this is a state hospital..if it was Medlands hospital you would have been thinking they are making it up since according to the medlands now belongs to a PF guy.

2.The Minister of defence holds another press briefing lying to the nation that Jay Jay was invited to interviews but chose not to give them information as to the details of the abduction when the truth is that Jay gave them the full details and named the people behind the abduction. Why was the minister again lying when he knew the truth.

3.Rae Hamonga tells the nation that they had summoned me to the police and i ignored the summons when he very well knows it was not true…

How can the state whose job is to protect citizens be so unreasonable in handling our affairs to an extent to now telling lies .How can we trust such people and why are they now lying to the nation.

The police knows by now the issues sorrounding the disappearance of Hon Banda and by now if we were a normal country why havent the people who have been named in the abduction been picked for questioning. We all know that when one is named in a crime whether true or not he or she has to be questioned, so why have those named individuals not been picked up or summoned for questioning and the public should know they have been interrogated the same way they are now interrogating us who they even know are not anywhere close to the matter??

We are a very country where people can trivialise such and important issue going about inconveniencing innocent people yet we have real suspects in the matter who have been named by Hon Jay.

WE NEED TO GET SERIOUS GENTLEMEN..WE ARE NOT DEMANDING FOR ANY SPECIAL FAVOURS BUT ANSWERS AS TO WHAT HAPPENED TO JAY JAY AND IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DO THE RIGHT THING KANSHI JUST CLOSE THE WHOLE DAME THINGS WE CONTINUE GOING ABOUT WITH OUR LIVES.

ABOUT CONSTITUENCY DEVELOPMENT FUND (CDF): DISSECTING PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S FLAGSHIP ‘ACHIEVEMENT’

ABOUT CONSTITUENCY DEVELOPMENT FUND (CDF): DISSECTING PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S FLAGSHIP ‘ACHIEVEMENT’

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Whenever we challenge those in the ruling UPND party to point at any achievements made by President Hakainde Hichilema during his time in office so far, one of the items they normally put first on the list is the increased allocation of Constituency Development Fund or CDF as it is commonly referred to. This fund was increased from K1.6 million per constituency in the 2021 National Budget to K25.7 million in the 2022 National Budget, and subsequently to K28.3 million in the 2023 National Budget. But did these increments really translate into any actual improvement in the wellbeing of the Zambian people? Let us look at the details to find out.

2. When the CDF budget was K1.6 million per constituency, the scope of CDF was to address minor community emergency requirements, as the community waited for the appropriate Government Department to respond to their needs. In other words, CDF was like pocket money for the Constituency. For instance, when there is a drought and the people cannot access water from wells, CDF would be used to install some boreholes in selected areas as the people wait for the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation or the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing or DMMU to respond with longer term water solutions for the area, such as building a dam.

3. However, when President Hakainde Hichilema decided to increase the CDF allocation from K1.6 million to K25.7 million in the 2022 National Budget, he also increased the scope which CDF needed to cover, to include (I) education bursaries, which was initially under Ministry of Education (ii) operational costs for Health Centers, which was initially under the Ministry of Health, (iii) infrastructure development, which was initially under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing (iv) recurrent and capital expenditure for Police Stations, which was initially under the Ministry of Home Affairs, etcetera. In other words, the President merely moved budget lines from respective Ministries to CDF.

4. But the million-dollar question that we need to answer at this moment is; was the increase in the scope and responsibilities of CDF commensurate with the increase in the allocated budget? This question is very important because if the answer to the above question is no, then the Zambian people are worse off today with a CDF budget of K28.3 million than they were in 2021 when the CDF budget was K1.6 million, but the Constituency did not have to fund activities under the Ministries of Education, Health, Infrastructure and Home Affairs.

5. In order to fairly and accurately answer the above question, let us look at a practical example. The last time motor vehicles were bought for the Zambia Police across the country was in 2010, under the leadership of President Rupiah Bwezani Banda. At that time, each and every Police Station received a Toyota Landcruiser single cab, which were all painted a dark blue color. This time around, Government has decided to buy motor vehicles for the Zambia Police. But instead of buying these motor vehicles under the Ministry of Home Affairs and allocating one to each and every Police Station across the country, as President Rupiah Banda did in 2010, President Hakainde Hichilema has decided to buy these motor vehicles under the Constituency Development Fund. He has allocated one vehicle per constituency, instead of one vehicle per Police Station.

6. The problem with President Hakainde Hichilema’s approach to resource allocation is that in most urban constituencies, there are several Police Stations in one constituency. Take the example of Lusaka Central Constituency, it has three mother stations being Lusaka Central, Woodlands and Twinpalm. Similarly, Munali Constituency also has three mother stations being Chelstone, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Mtendere. Chongwe Constituency has four Police Stations being Airport, Ngwerere, Kanakantapa and Chongwe. So under the current dispensation, you have three or four Police Stations sharing one vehicle allocated to the Constituency, whereas in the previous dispensation, each Police Station was allocated with one vehicle. Maybe we can now go back to our initial question; are Zambians better off or worse off under CDF?

7. Let me tell you a short story. Once upon a time, there lived Mr. Bwalya who was married to Bana Bwalya and together they had 6 children. Mr Bwalya had a well-paying job and lived well with his family mumayadi. The family’s main expenditure items per month were home groceries = K10,000, school fees = 15,000, house rent = K7,000 and pocket money for Bana Bwalya = K3,000. The total household expenditure was therefore K35,000 per month. Every month, Mr Bwalya would buy the household groceries, pay rent and also pay school fees and only give his wife her K3,000 cash for pocket money. However, along the way, Mr. Bwalya decided to change the model for running his home. Instead of giving his wife K3,000 he increased it to K33,000. But in turn, Bana Bwalya would have to pay for the house rent = K7,000, school fees = K15,000 and buy groceries for the household = K10,000. However, after Bana Bwalya met all her increased expenditure obligations, she only remained with K1,000 as her pocket money, compared to the K3,000 that she would have as pocket money under the previous dispensation.

8. On the other hand, Mr. Bwalya went around the entire neighborhood boasting to his friends that he had increased the monthly allocation to his wife by more than ten times. Every time Mr. Bwalya boasted to his friends, he deliberately omitted to mention that he had also increased the monthly expenditure obligations to Bana Bwalya. In fact, the increased obligations were higher than the increased allocation, to the extent that Bana Bwalya was now worse off as she only had K1,000 as her pocket money, compared to K3,000 under the previous dispensation.

If you want to substitute Mr. Bwalya for President Hakainde Hichilema and his CDF scam, please go ahead. Anyway, the Future is SET ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

Namibia has rolled back on a policy of awarding visa waivers for non- reciprocating countries

Non-reciprocated visa waiver policy experiment fails

Zambia’s southern neighbor, Namibia, has rolled back on a policy of awarding visa waivers for non- reciprocating countries.

Zambian authorities had in 2023 see link https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Y5GnHwcXWpGrnziH/?mibextid=xfxF2i
also adopted this policy by waiving visa requirements to about 43 non-reciprocating countries in a misguided aim of boosting tourism but cracks have now emerged in this loop sided policy.

Namibia has opted to re-adopt the well tested reciprocal treatment of diplomacy after the failed experiment (see attached press release). Reciprocated visa treatment is seen as a fair and equitable way to handle even economic diplomatic relations.

A Zambian Business Times – ZBT research revealed that about 90% of visitors and tourists to Zambia are from neighbouring counties and from within the Africa region but policy makers seem infatuated with tourists from outside the region, going against their own data and information on the ground.

This loop sided view and infatuation of attracting international visitors and tourists from abroad ignoring the source of 90% of the historical visitors has seen the Zambia Tourism Agency – ZTA award what some concerned stakeholders told ZBT to be a multi million dollar contract to a UK firm to market Zambia abroad.

ZTA awarded what some tourism stakeholders told ZBT to be a hefty multi million dollar contract to the UK’s Paul Charles (PC) agency to market Zambia as a preferred tourism destination in Europe and North America.

ZBT after corruption allegations against ZTA in the award of the contract to PC agency, contacted ZTA to respond to the allegations and share details of this contract under the newly signed Access to Information Act.

ZBT further raised the matter with the Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba and the Human Rights Commission, but all the three government institutions have remained mute to date.

Another masterpiece from Saki

0

There’s no doubt it, Saki is definitely a master story-teller. Before former president Edgar Lungu collapsed on The Past Magazine like a ton of breaks and sent it to its early grave at Chingwere, we always relished and looked forward to reading his articles. We found them quite enthralling and insightful indeed.

So, when he finally took to the podium during the first citizens press briefing, he recounted a scintillating anecdote about the alleged disappearance of one Cool J, a powerful man in the village. Saki was at his best as usual! He could easily mint himself gold if he tried his luck in Bollywood or Nollywood.

For the next one hour or so, he held his audience spellbound as he gave an account of how aliens trailed a limousine that somehow found itself on a quiet road during the witch hour. The spaceships caught up with him and blocked his vehicle. They punched a small hole in the screen and extracted Cool J’s from the automobile and took him away to the moon!

“They nailed him to the Cross with blunt nails as they begun interrogating him…..” narrated Saki in measured tones.

“They pulled his tongue with a pliers to force answers from his mouth….,” he continued. “Who is financing ECL? Why are you always in his company? Who is giving you information on what the government is planning? How do you get to where you are going and avoid being seen? Who is financing your movements so that you are always with ECL like the holy spirit…..”

The audience murmured in shock. Saki goes on to explain that when the aliens no longer had use for Cool J, they resolved to feed him to the crocodiles in the Kafue river.

However, on their way to the river, Angels appeared in their spaceship and clouded their minds. Suddenly, they started arguing and quarreling between themselves whether they should feed Cool J to the reptiles or not.

They eventually abandoned Cool J by the river bank and took flight!

Almost immediately, Cool J’s friends from the big boat arrived and whisked him away to the hospital where they gave him a loaf of bread, an entire roll of polony and a case of fruiticana to eat as the Chef hadn’t yet reported. Cool J was known to have a grand appetite. He had just gone half-way through his mundane meal when paras stormed the ward where he was accomodated and took him away for questioning!

HICHILEMA’S GOVERNMENT FAILS TO MEET PEOPLE’S NEEDS….resorts to intimidation and suppression, says DR. MUSUMALI

HICHILEMA’S GOVERNMENT FAILS TO MEET PEOPLE’S NEEDS

….resorts to intimidation and suppression, says DR. MUSUMALI

Kitwe—Saturday, June 8th, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) General Secretary Dr. Cosmas Musumali has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to address the hunger crisis in the country rather than infringing on the liberties of citizens and opposition political parties.

Dr. Musumali spoke shortly after police disrupted a scheduled SP rally at Changanamai grounds in Kitwe.

He revealed that the Socialist Party had notified the police two weeks in advance about the rally. However, on June 3rd, they received a refusal, citing a volatile security situation. Despite appealing this decision on June 7th, it wasn’t until 9:30pm the night before the rally that the police reversed their decision and allowed the event to proceed.

“Our leadership travelled overnight to be here, and buses arrived from various parts of the Copperbelt. People were eager to hear Fred M’membe speak. But early this morning, the grounds were secured by hundreds of police officers, preventing us from setting up,” Dr. Musumali recounted.

Dr. Musumali expressed gratitude to those who prioritized attending the rally, highlighting the significance of the event.

“Members of the press, we appreciate your presence and commitment. You accompanied us to Changanamai , but we find ourselves back at our secretariat on the Copperbelt because of a fearful government that can not face the truth,” he said.

He views the refusal to allow the rally to proceed as a significant infringement on political rights.

“Since 2021, no opposition political party has been allowed to hold a rally. This isn’t just about fearing opposition but fearing their own failures. This government has failed to meet the people’s material needs and resorts to political intimidation and suppression.” He said.

Dr. Musumali emphasized the importance of rallies for political engagement, stating, “rallies are an integral part of the dialogue between politicians and the people of Zambia. Fred M’membe deserves the chance to communicate his views and solutions to the Zambians.”

He further criticized the government for failing to address hunger and corruption.

“People are angry and hungry, and this has nothing to do with climate change. This government is corrupt, selling national assets and failing to address critical issues. They fear Fred M’membe because he offers hope and represents the suffering masses.” He said.

Despite the disruption, Dr. Musumali vowed to continue their efforts. “This rally marks the beginning of a larger movement. We will hold rallies everywhere and use every opportunity to ensure Zambians hear the truth. We are also taking immediate legal action.”

Meanwhile, Socialist Party Copperbelt Province Spokesperson Reagan Kanshinga condemned the government’s actions, describing them as an infringement on political rights.

“This government is not just fearful of opposition but is failing to address the country’s needs. Their actions today are a clear indication of their fear and failure,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of rallies for political engagement and communication with the public.

And Socialist Party Copperbelt Province Chairperson Dr. Brian Chirambo emphasized the party’s commitment to serving the people of Zambia with respect and dignity, including the police officers, who he says were being abused.

“The Socialist Party provides leadership and an alternative. In the Copperbelt Province, we will continue mobilizing the party and appeal to everyone to join us. We have direction, stable leadership, and a vision to improve lives. This disruption is not a setback; it is a stepping stone to greater heights. We will demonstrate clear, visionary leadership, not violence,” he added.
