France breaks from US and UK to support ICC arrest warrant for Israeli PM Netanyahu

France’s Foreign Ministry has come out to support the International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza and in Israel.

On Monday, May 20, the ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan said he had issued arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders—Yehia Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh—for crimes committed in Israel and Gaza on 7 October 2023 and after, including “extermination”, “taking hostages” and “Rape and other acts of sexual violence”.

Khan also issued warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes in Gaza following Hamas’ 7 October attack, including “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare”, “intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population” and “extermination and/or murder”.

The arrest warrant drew equivalence between the militant group and an elected government with close ties to the US and West .

But France has now broken from its allies to support the ICC’s arrest warrants against Israel..

“France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence, and its fight against impunity in all situations,” the Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement published Monday night, following the ICC’s announcement.

The French Foreign Ministry said it “has condemned, as of 7 October, the anti-Semitic massacres perpetuated by Hamas. This terrorist group claimed the barbaric attacks directed at civilians, accompanied by acts of torture and sexual violence that they themselves documented”.

On Israel, “France has been raising the alarm for many months on the imperative for the strict respect of international humanitarian law, notably on the unacceptable nature of civilian losses in the Gaza strip and an insufficient humanitarian access.”

France’s support for the ICC warrant came after the United States objected to the ICC’s putting Israel and Hamas in the same warrant.

US President Joe Biden called the move “outrageous”, saying there was “no equivalence” between Israel and Hamas.

Italy’s foreign minister agreed that it was was “unacceptable” to equate the Israeli democratic government with Hamas.

Netanyahu said Khan has created a “twisted and false moral equivalence” between Israel and Hamas, calling the warrants “a moral outrage of historic proportions”.

In a video released by his office Tuesday, Netanyahu called Khan ”one of the “great anti-Semites in modern times,” like the judges in Nazi Germany who denied Jews basic rights and enabled the Holocaust, and said the decision to issue the warrants was “callously pouring gasoline on the fires of anti-Semitism that are raging around the world”.

A Hamas representative denounced the arrest warrants against its leaders, saying it was “equating the victim with the executioner”, and demanded the withdrawal of the request.

In his warrant, Khan does not make any direct comparisons between Israel and Hamas, except to say they have both committed crimes against humanity.

A panel of three judges will determine whether or not to issue the arrest warrants after considering the prosecutor’s evidence.

If the warrants are issued, the court—which includes nearly all countries of the European Union could be put in a diplomatically difficult position.

Diddy Allegedly Paid $50,000 To Conceal Footage Of Hotel Assault On Cassie

Sean Diddy Combs has been in the news for a while now and things appear not to be going his way following woes in the wake of lawsuits related to assault which was unlocked by his former girlfriend, Cassie.

Cassie filed a bombshell legal lawsuit against Diddy late last year and a part of the lawsuit alleged that Sean “Diddy” Combs had paid $50,000 to the InterContinental Hotel in exchange for a tape recording of him violently beating her in March 2016.

The disturbing security tape landed on the internet over the weekend but was first released by CNN on May 17.

The video showed Cassie exiting a hotel room and heading toward an elevator while Diddy followed her down the corridor.

Diddy, approached her, grabbed her by the neck, and threw her to the ground.

As Ventura lay there motionless, Diddy turned to kick her before grabbing her suitcase and purse.

Diddy kicked Cassie again, grabbed her by the hoodie, and pulled her down the hallway for a short distance before letting go and taking her belongings.

After a short while, Diddy returned to grab Cassie, but not before taking a seat nearby, grabbing something from a table, and throwing it at her.

Combs, however, maintained his innocence throughout the lawsuit, which detailed other numerous accusations against him.

However, a day after the lawsuit was filed, Diddy and Cassie reached an undisclosed settlement.

Even Diddy’s attorney, Ben Brafman, clarified saying the music mogul’s stance on the issue, telling People in a statement:

“Just so we’re clear, a decision to settle a lawsuit, especially in 2023, is in no way an admission of wrongdoing. Mr. Combs‘ decision to settle the lawsuit does not in any way undermine his flat-out denial of the claims. He is happy they got to a mutual settlement and wishes Ms. Ventura the best.”

Diddy has spoken out since he last did in March after the raid, sharing a message on Instagram on May 15 that read, “Time tells the truth.” He signed off on the post, adding, “LOVE.”

Diddy has since apologized after the CNN-aired video but did not either deny or admit to any wrongdoing.

Catholic monk came out as transgender, saying the church has “to deal with” trans Catholics

0

A Catholic monk came out as transgender this month, saying the church has “to deal with” trans Catholics.

On May 17, Brother Christian Matson, a Catholic monk in Kentucky, told Religion News Service, “This Sunday, Pentecost 2024 (May 19), I’m planning to come out publicly as transgender.”

“You’ve got to deal with us, because God has called us into this church. It’s not your church to kick us out of—this is God’s church, and God has called us and engrafted us into it,” Matson, who holds a doctorate in religious studies, told the Church regarding transgender Catholics.

Matson transitioned during college and converted to Catholicism four years later. He hopes his coming out will spark meaningful discussions about the inclusion of transgender individuals within the Catholic community.

His announcement comes just a month after the Vatican released “Infinite Dignity,” a 20-page document that criticizes gender theory, abortion, and surrogacy as attacks on humanity’s connection with God.

Matson expressed disappointment that the Vatican’s stance on trans issues lacks scientific engagement. He has written multiple letters to the Vatican, urging leaders to interact more with transgender individuals.

Matson sought advice from a canon lawyer when he felt called to serve in the Church. The lawyer suggested the role of a diocesan hermit, which does not distinguish based on sex or gender.

Despite this, Matson faced rejections from several communities before finding acceptance in Kentucky.

“People who knew me said, ‘You clearly have a religious vocation,’ and these were all people who knew my medical history,” Matson said.

However, those responsible for decision-making within communities often refused to meet with him.

Bishop John Stowe, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ individuals in the Catholic Church, received a letter from Matson in 2020 and oversaw his vows in 2022.

Bishop Stowe gave Matson permission to come out as transgender

“My willingness to be open to him is because it’s a sincere person seeking a way to serve the church. Hermits are a rarely used form of religious life … but they can be either male or female,” Stowe told the RNS.

Matson spent his initial year almost entirely in prayer or working at a local theater and renewed his vows in 2023.

“I don’t have a hidden agenda, I just want to serve the church,” Matson said. “People can believe that or not.”

Real Madrid’s Toni Kross announces retirement

Esteemed midfielder of Real Madrid Toni Kroos, is set to retire after Euro 2024.

Kross anounced his official retirement on his twitter page with opening words that read, “As I always say, Real Madrid is and will be my last club” earlier today and was later officially confirmed by the club on their Twitter page.

“July 17th, 2014 – the day of my presentation at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life. My life as a footballer – but especially as a person. It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world. After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end.

I will never forget that insolent successful time! I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me.

But especially I would like to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and your love from the first day until the last one.

At the same time this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the Euro championship”. “I am happy and proud, that in my mind I found the right timing for my decision and that I could choose it by my own.

My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level. From now on there is only one leading thought: a por la 15!!! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!” the tweet read.

He joined Real Madrid in 2014 from Bayern Munich in a transfer worth €25 million.

Since then, he has been an integral part of the team’s midfield, known for his vision, passing, creativity, and set-piece ability.

Kroos has helped Real Madrid to a period of sustained success, including winning four La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, three of which were won consecutively from 2016 to 2018.

He has been selected in the FIFPro World11 and UEFA Team of the Year multiple times, reflecting his status as one of the best midfielders.

During his tenure, Kroos has been celebrated for his calm demeanor on the field, his ability to control the pace of the game, and his precision in passing.

As Kroos approaches the end of his career, his legacy at Real Madrid is firmly established, with numerous trophies and personal.

Euro 2024: Rashford, Henderson missing in provisional England squad list – Southgate explains

England manager Gareth Southgate has explained his decision to leave Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson out of his Euro 2024 squad.

Southgate announced his provisional 33-man squad for the tournament, but Rashford and Henderson, both regulars under his management, were notably absent.

Instead, Southgate surprised many by including five uncapped players: Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Adam Wharton, and James Trafford.

Luke Shaw is also in the squad but is considered a “long shot” due to his ongoing recovery from an injury sustained in February.

Rashford’s exclusion comes after a difficult season with Manchester United, where he managed only seven goals and two assists, contributing to the team’s eighth-place finish. Henderson’s journey has been tumultuous; after leaving Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia last summer, he struggled to adapt and subsequently moved to Ajax in January.

Although he made nine appearances in the Eredivisie, injuries have hampered his season, ultimately leading to his omission from the squad.

Southgate addressed the media, explaining his rationale for leaving Rashford out during a press conference.

He told reporters: “These are of course difficult calls. You are talking about players that are very important players. With Marcus, in that area of the pitch, I feel that other players have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.”

The England boss went on to speak about Henderson’s omission: “Hendo has given himself every chance. From the last camp, he missed five weeks through injury and he hasn’t been able to get to that tempo since then. It’s a big call to make, the three players from last time, he, Ben (White) and Marcus (Rashford) all had excellent professionalism.”

Southgate also offered an update on Shaw’s chances of making the squad. He told reporters: “[Luke Shaw’s] up against it.

He’s missed a lot of football. The fact that he has been our first choice in that position, we’ve probably given him a lot longer than we would have done.

I’ve talked with him and the medical team, we’ve been liaising with Manchester United, I’m not sure what’s realistic at this time. I have to say, he’s a long shot.”

Diddy: Candace Owens Thinks Embattled Rapper Is The ‘Fall Guy’ For A Bigger Agenda

Candace Owens is mostly known for her controversial comments on social media, but she has become a huge name in political commentary in the United States of America.

Overall, she is a far-right conservative who has delivered some pretty displeasing takes. However, there are millions of people willing to listen to her.

Some people even think she helped Donald Trump win the 2016 election because her fans are the same demographic, and they will eat up anything she has to say about a particular topic.

Owens has been increasing her coverage of hip-hop. More specifically, when Diddy’s sexual assault scandal started making waves, she took shots at Diddy and the allegations surrounding him.

For instance, in March, she made a lot of comparisons between Diddy and MJ and even said that Michael Jackson’s death and Diddy’s alleged actions are linked.

She also stated that this is a bigger story than the Jeffrey Epstein case.

On March 25th, 2024, Diddy had his homes in Miami and Los Angeles raided, which brought more attention to the assault case and what was about to become of it.

She decided to weigh in on all of this in a couple of tweets:

“The Diddy case is arguably bigger than the Jeffrey Epstein case, and yet the media is virtually silent on it. That’s because they are implicated, but we now know that both politicians and celebrities are being blackmailed.

“The Feds are currently raiding Diddy’s house. They already knew what he was up to, but he is going to be the fall guy so that they can protect the people at the top of the ring,” Owens wrote.

“They are raiding his home to hide evidence, not to find it. That’s how this works.”

This borders on conspiracy theory territory; however, Owens is not the only one who believes that. Needless to say, the entire Diddy situation has the entire hip-hop world talking but he maintains his innocence.

However, when a video, which was first obtained by CNN, showed Combs, wearing only a towel, chasing Cassie down a hotel corridor before throwing her to the ground, kicking her, and dragging her, have turned the situation on its head.

MUTATI, MILUPI STUCK IN THE ALLIANCE FOR SURVIVAL- MSONI
…leaving the Alliance it will make them irrelevant in the political discourse

By Fox Reporter
MOVEMENT for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Felix Mutati and his ADD counterpart Charles Milupi appear to be lost and stranded in the UPND government, former alliance partner leader Nason Msoni has charged.

Msoni says both Mutati and Milupi cannot survive without the UPND and therefore, have no option but to continue in their abusive marriage of inconvenience.

“I doubt that leaving the UPND Alliance would make them (Mutati and Milupi) any relevant to the ongoing political discourse. The two leaders appear resolved to go down with the UPND government,” said Msoni.

He said it is not surprising to see Mutati and Milupi insist staying in a government that has done more harm than good to the people of Zambia for their personal survival.

“And so it is not entirely surprising to hear that Mr Mutati has opted and insisted on staying in a faulty government that is clearly sinking and no longer represents the broader interests of the Zambian public.

The MDC and ADD are in disarray and their leaders have since lost contact, like a pilot who can’t land his own aircraft because he has lost contact with with the control tower,” he said.

Msoni noted that political alliances must be beneficial to all members and not just one person.

“It is naive to assume that the prosperity of one person appointed to a government position represents the prosperity of all other members in a political party. A good leader should always remember his members and his supporters. ‘Eating pudding’ in a political Alliance government can’t just be about one person,” he said.

Msoni has predicted the fallout of Mutati and Milupi from their members, adding that soon it will be members dumping them.

“In the end it might not be entirely surprising to hear that members resolve to dump their leaders. In a nutshell only time will tell whether this kind of approach to leadership works for other members,” said Msoni.

70-year-old charged with hate crime after allegedly shooting a white mom with Black sons

John P. Shadbar, an Illinois resident, has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after reportedly shooting his neighbor, a 45-year-old white mother with black sons, many times in what authorities call a racially motivated attack.

Witnesses named Shadbar as the gunman and stated that he had “shot the victim outside and was walking around his property with a rifle,” according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office investigation. They claimed he shot the woman “from different outside locations,” firing dozens of shots at her.

The shooting, which was caught on video by security cameras in the vicinity, has led investigators to suspect it was racially motivated. Melissa Robertson, who was shot in the chest and hand and was critically injured, was taken to the hospital for surgery. Authorities, however, stated that she is healing.

Her family informed NBC Chicago that Shadbar had terrorized them since they moved in ten years ago. Shadbar allegedly hurled slurs like “dead n-words, n-word this, n-word lover,” according to one of Robertson’s sons, Mikeal Johnson.

“[He] called me the n-word straight to my face,” Johnson recounted. “My mom made him apologize. A few days later, he comes out holding a gun in his underwear.”

According to the family, they reported the alleged bullying to the authorities multiple times over the years, but nothing was ever done. Johnson told ABC7, “We’ve called the cops. He’s thrown fireworks and he’s shot blanks. Nothing was done. And it’s very unfortunate.”

Jeanne Beyer, Robertson’s aunt, told NBC that the gunman shouted the “dead n-word” and attempted to enter the family’s backyard during the most recent incident. According to the family, Robertson’s 8-year-old son saw the shooting.

The 70-year-old shooter then holed himself inside his home following the incident. According to the news release, he caved after a crisis mediator persuaded him to surrender with his hands raised. Meanwhile, deputies claimed that during his conversation with the crisis negotiator, Shadbar made “several incriminating statements.”

Following his arrest, he was charged with hate crime, aggravated battery with a firearm, attempted first-degree murder, and unauthorized use of a weapon by a felon at the Will County Adult Detention Facility. Additional charges are probably pending, according to the sheriff’s office.

Former President Edgar Lungu Still Enjoys Presidential Immunity- Catholic Priest Fr John Kabinda

0

FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU STILL ENJOYS PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY
Analysis of Presidential Immunity and Alleged Constitutional Violations in Zambia
Legal Framework of Presidential Immunity
According to the current Constitution,
Article 98(1) stipulates that no civil proceedings may be initiated or continued against the President, or any individual performing executive functions under Article 109, regarding actions or omissions made in their private capacity during their tenure in office.

Article 98(4) extends immunity from criminal proceedings to the President or any individual performing executive functions, as outlined in Article 109, and specifies that this immunity persists even after the individual ceases to hold or perform the functions of the office.
Article 98(9) provides that if the immunity is removed following clause (8), the individual who previously held the office of President or performed executive functions shall be charged with the offense for which the immunity was removed.

Article 98(10) clarifies that if a court acquits the individual of the offense for which their immunity was removed, the immunity shall be considered never to have been removed, for all purposes, without further proceedings.
Case of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu

Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu retains the same immunity from criminal proceedings as the current head of state. The distinction lies in the fact that the current head of state performs executive functions, whereas the former head of state does not. The immunity specified in Article 98(1) is identical to the immunity enjoyed by a former head of state under Article 98(4). Furthermore, Article 98(10) emphasizes the continuity of immunity by stating that, upon acquittal, the immunity is deemed not to have been removed.

Concerns and Constitutional Violations

Recent actions by government officials and law enforcement suggest a misunderstanding or disregard for these constitutional provisions. Statements indicating that President Lungu has no immunity contradict the clear language of the Constitution, thereby setting a dangerous precedent of constitutional abrogation.

The incident where the police embarrassed former President Lungu during his visit to Bishop Clement Mulenga of Kabwe Diocese demonstrates a violation of his constitutional rights. Although an apology was issued to the Catholic Church, a formal apology is also warranted to former President Lungu and the Zambian people. Moreover, future conduct by the police should reflect a genuine respect for the Constitution.

Under the current constitutional framework, the former head of state cannot be summoned or arrested by the police. Any attempts to do so would constitute a flagrant violation of Zambia’s Supreme Law and should not be tolerated. It is imperative that all Zambians, including public officials, familiarize themselves with the Constitution to prevent such unlawful acts. The abrogation of constitutional law with impunity can lead to anarchy, which must be avoided at all costs.

Claim Regarding Arrest of Former Presidents

No law states that a former head of state can be prosecuted without first removing their immunity. The same constitutional provisions apply. If a current head of state commits a crime, they cannot be arrested and taken to court directly; the impeachment process must be initiated as outlined in the Zambian Constitution. Similarly, if there are allegations against a former head of state, the appropriate proceedings to remove their immunity must be initiated in Parliament, not by the police.

Conclusion

The Constitution of Zambia provides clear and continuous immunity to the President and former presidents from civil and criminal proceedings. The recent actions against former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu represent a significant breach of these constitutional protections. Upholding the Constitution is crucial to maintaining the rule of law and order in Zambia

Edgar Lungu on tribalism-Laura Miti

Edgar Lungu on tribalism

By Laura Miti

President Lungu has a solid reputation for making unthought- through, bafflingly self-harming statements when speaking off-the-cuff.

Consensus has been that he must keep to prepared scripts. Well, it looks like even that is not working anymore. Someone in his team, it seems, has decided to make him sound as off-into-thorny-bushes, while scripted, as he does unscripted.

Goodness, his last written statement on tribalism against the Tonga was – are sure??

You see, Mr Lungu has the dishonour of running the most deliberately and actively tribally hateful presidency in Zambia’s history. All his peers were variously on the continuum of favouring their tribes mates with positions in government and other favours that power can bestow. Nothing more.

Come one Edgar Lungu and that was not enough. He set up a both overt and covert hate machine against the tribe his bitterest rival happened to come from – the Tonga. So, for him, it was not enough to give friends, relatives and tribes mates cushy jobs – no!

He wanted the country to despise the Tonga. He hoped, I guess, that in causing citizens to believe that the Tonga were different on the negative scale, that they were to be sidelined, to be detested, Zambia would never vote for the man he feared most, politically.

President Lungu himself was responsible for the covert part of his hate campaign. He kept his statements to the subliminal messaging he tries in his last statement like – my rival is using tribe to win elections. He also set up that maliciously intended Voting Patterns Inquiry, whose report he was never able to publish because it condemned his government.

The full injecting of venom into the national psyche against the Tonga, and to a considerable extent their tribal cousins, he left to his proxies, the most vicious of whom was Chishimba Kambwili.

Goodness – how Kambwili, Luo, Chanda Nyela, Bizwell Mutale etal worked hard to convince the nation that Tonga people were inherently, dangerously self-loving. That, if one of their kind ever came to office, the rest of the country would have to beg them to barely breathe.

Chairperson of the hate brigade was unquestionably Mr Chishimba Kambwili. I cannot, therefore, explain my sense of disgust when I read President Lungu’s attempt to suggest that the former Minister of Information, who used even his public office to spread hate, was wrongly prosecuted and convicted for hate speech.

Ha ba Lungu! I thought this was a topic you would avoid. Just act like you didn’t know Mr Kambwili paid the price for doing your dirty business.

But no – you dare speak about it!
Even now, when the ordinary Tonga citizen has proved to be the most unconcerned about having “their man” in State House, you continue spewing sweetened venom against them.

Look, President Lungu, I don’t know if you are actually a hateful man or this is all about politics. All I will say is there is so much to talk about your successor without touching tribe. I can give you some ideas:

1. We desperately need to amend the constitution to solidify our democracy.
2. The number of promises made during the campaign that he now knows (or maybe knew) are impossible to fulfil.
3. A Cabinet that is begging for a reshuffle.
4. A police service that is absolutely rogue.
5. If you want, you can even add problems you created yourself like the economy.

Why or why, must you continue to attempt to poison a nation that, before you, had never distinguished one part of its people, for collective hate?

What is Lungu foretelling?

0

We know for a fact that former Edgar Lungu is definitely not a prophet. Being a prophet is a serious undertaking; it’s not as easy as walking into Soweto market, get yourself a nice double breasted-suit and pointed shoes from China and start preaching prosperity gospel to bored passengers on a long-distance bound bus in a hoarse voice.

Basically, to be a prophet, you have to speak and proclaim what you hear from God, instead of just promoting your own ideas. All in all, a prophet is a person who receives a divine message and speaks to other human beings on behalf of a deity.

Speaking to congregants Sunday at Danny Pule’s church where the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) had a meeting for special prayers, Lungu pronounced, “People are talking about 2026 elections, but am here to tell you that we may not even reach 2026 because we may deliver a baby before that time.”

Wait a minute…..what is Lungu foretelling? Is somebody going to die any time soon? Are we expecting a coup? Or perhaps, he and his cronies are plotting an uprising?

It’s such kind of excitement and utterances that landed our founding president Kenneth Kaunda in problems with President Chiluba in 1997. The police may need to take keen interest in what Lungu is saying and perhaps invite him for interviews.

Following the botched 1997 coup attempt by Col. Steven Lungu and his rag-tag army, a number of military personnel were rounded up and detained. The witch-hunt would soon be extended beyond the barracks and see influential figures such as Dean Mung’omba and Princess Nakatindi Wina taken in. Former President Kaunda who was outside the country at the time escaped the dragnet, as he was abroad on an extended visit, until he came back home for Christmas.

Chiluba justified the action insisting that Kaunda had been making predictions about the overthrow of government.

Since history has a tendency of repeating itself, doesn’t Lungu surely owe us an explanation about what he’s been saying?

JUDGES REFUSE TO HEAR ESTHER LUNGU’S WITNESSES

JUDGES REFUSE TO HEAR ESTHER LUNGU’S WITNESSES

Lusaka- Tuesday, 22nd May 2024

The Economic and Financial Crimes Court on Monday, 21st May 2024, refused to hear witnesses submitted and subpoenad by former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu’s lawyers.

This is in a matter where the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) , Gilbert Phiri, has applied for forfeiture of properties; 9334/1, 9334/ 1, 9334/2, 9334/3 AND 9334/4 containing 15 double storey flats located in State Lodge.

Former First Lady, Mama Esther Nyawa Tembo Lungu, has opposed the application stating that the properties were not proceeds of crime as alleged by the DPP.

The matter is before High Court Justices; Hon.Pixie K. Yangailo, Hon. Ian Mwanajiti Mabbolobbolo and Hon. Vincent Sililo Siloka.

Lawyers for Mrs. Esther Lungu, Jonas Zimba of Makebi Zulu Advocates and Mrs.Mrs Dessislava Findlay.of D. Findlay and Associates, applied that officials from the Ministry of Works and Supply and Ministry of Infrastructure were required to lay. test and verify the evidence related to the properties, the subject before the Court.

The lawyers applied that it was important that evidence was corroborated and tested.

However, the court refused the application for Mrs. Lungu to bring her witnesses stating that as Judges they will (strangely) rely on affidavit evidence alone.

In the earlier hearing, the DPP was allowed to bring to court witnesses from the Bank and others to support his claim of forfeiture of the property.

The proceedings are based on what is called Non-Conviction Based (NCB) forfeiture of assets.

Distinct from a forfeiture order, a non-conviction-based forfeiture of an asset occurs when a court confiscates assets of suspected criminal nature, even where no conviction has been obtained in relation to criminal conduct.

These action are premised on Foreceiture of Proceeds of Crime Act of 2010, where stakehokders and human rights advocates have condemned the provisions in the Act as they violate the constitutional rights to; innocence, due process and the right to property.

In 2022, Chief Justice Mumba Malila issued a gazette notice Statutory Number no. 5 of 2022 and stated that he had created the Economic and Financial Crimes Court as a division of the Court.

The Chief Justice stated that he had responded to President Hakainde Hichilema who pronounced that his government would create such a court.

In addition to the jurisdiction of the Court under Article 134 of the Constitution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court will hear and determine matters relating to economic and financial crimes and corruption.

The matter involving Mrs. Lungu has been adjourned to a later date for judgment.

The accused person allegedly defaulted payment from the month of January to March 2024. He owed USD7 500 as of 31 March 2024. The accused person who appeared as a self-actor requested for a postponement to seek legal representation and the matter was remanded to the 28th of May 2024.”

Background
Russel Goreraza is the firstborn child of Grace Mugabe from her first marriage to Stanley Goreraza, before she married the late President Robert Mugabe.

In January 2024, Goreraza was taken to court by the mother of his child, who successfully obtained a maintenance order against him. The court mandated Goreraza to pay USD 2,500 (approximately ZAR 47,000) per month, or the equivalent in Zimbabwean dollars at the prevailing inter-bank rate, as child maintenance.

However, Goreraza allegedly defaulted on these payments from January to March 2024, resulting in the current debt of USD 7,500 (ZAR 140,000).

Legal Implications
The NPAZ emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that failure to comply with maintenance orders is a criminal offence that could result in significant penalties.

“Maintenance orders are not optional. They are legal obligations that must be adhered to,” said an NPAZ representative. “Failure to do so not only disrespects the court but also impacts the welfare of the child involved.”

Next Steps
As the case progresses, all eyes will be on the Concession Magistrates’ Court to see how Goreraza’s request for legal representation will affect the outcome.

Legal experts suggest that Goreraza’s best chance lies in negotiating a payment plan to settle his arrears.

The trial, set for May 28, 2024, is expected to attract significant public and media attention given the high-profile nature of the parties involved.

As the son of Zimbabwe’s former first lady, Goreraza’s actions and legal battles continue to be a topic of public interest.

Public Reaction
Public reaction has been mixed, with some expressing sympathy for Goreraza, while others criticize him for failing to fulfil his parental responsibilities.

“It’s a sad situation for everyone involved, especially the child,” commented one local resident. “Goreraza needs to step up and take responsibility.”

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case will undoubtedly continue to capture the nation’s attention, reflecting broader societal issues related to child maintenance and legal compliance in Zimbabwe.

Why Isn’t Diddy in Jail? Candace Owens Drops Bombshell on Rap Mogul’s FBI/CIA Connections After Shocking Video Of Assault On Cassie

Diddy: FBI/CIA Asset? Candace Owens Reveals Shocking Truth Behind Cassie Assault Video
Disgraced music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is not behind bars because he is allegedly an asset for the FBI or CIA. At least, this is the explosive claim made by outspoken conservative political commentator Candace Owens. Owens set the internet ablaze with her shocking allegations on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after a disturbing video of Diddy physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura went viral online.

Disturbing Video Goes Viral
In the video obtained and released by CNN, the 54-year-old Diddy is seen grabbing, shoving, dragging, and kicking Cassie during an altercation at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles.

The incident, recorded in March 2016, eerily matches the allegations in a now-settled federal lawsuit filed by Ventura in November.

Despite reaching an undisclosed settlement with Combs, Ventura declined to comment on the video obtained by CNN.

Attorney Speaks Out
Ventura’s attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, condemned the footage, stating,

“The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”

Owens Drops the Bombshell
Commenting on the disturbing assault video, Owens wrote: “He’s not in jail because he’s a FED/CIA asset. Kanye tried to tell everyone.”

Owens, known for her controversial statements, did not provide further details on the topic.

However, her allegations have ignited a firestorm on social media, with many agreeing with her view that Diddy may be an asset for the FBI or CIA, protecting him from arrest.

Social Media Reacts

Below are some of the reactions from social media:

Jamie @LibertyJamison
“Ye literally posted on his Insta that Diddy was a fed! That aged extremely, extremely well.”

CurriedTexan @Laura76418969
“The CIA (and maybe FBI, too) not only needs to be publicly audited, but also significantly downsized. Why do they need people like P. Diddy as assets to begin with? Is the CIA running the blackmail schemes?”

David @davidboboy
“Kanye has yet to wrong. He said once ‘it isn’t that he isn’t right. He’s just not right, now.’ And since then he’s been cooking.”

BiancaPak @morgan286
“People don’t believe it when you tell them certain people are NOT in jail or prison because they work for them people. #informants #Chrisean”

Israel Walden @prolific369
“CNN waited until he could no longer be arrested statute of limitations… And I’m Still waiting on Epstein….”

Banis Major @BanisMajor
“I said the same thing— mostly likely been an informant since the 90s. He must’ve done some crazy shit recently to where they can sweep it under the rug no more.”

Certified Life Liver @Cello5150
“Stop trying to use this ugly situation to score some black points you of all people know the law works didn’t for rich people.”

As the controversy continues to unfold, the world watches closely to see if more details will emerge about Diddy’s alleged ties to the FBI or CIA.

US to withdraw ‘unauthorized’ troops from Niger

United States says it will pull all its troops out of Niger within the next four months or so after the West African country’s military government ordered them to leave.

Niger last month told Washington to withdraw its military personnel, which number close to 1,000, branding their presence “illegal”.

The military government, which took power last year, has already overseen the withdrawal of troops from former colonial power and traditional security ally France as it has strengthened ties with Russia.

The US withdrawal from Niger has commenced, as confirmed by a joint statement from the Pentagon and Nigerien defense officials on Sunday.

All troops are scheduled to leave the country by September 15, “at the latest.”

Niger had been a crucial ally of the West until a coup occurred last year, actively participating in Washington’s efforts against armed groups in the Sahel region.

Following a five-day meeting, a new agreement was reached between Niger’s defense ministry and the US Department of Defense.

This agreement ensures the protection of US troops until their departure, as stated in the joint statement.

“The withdrawal of American forces from Niger in no way affects the pursuit of relations between the United States and Niger in the area of development.

Also, Niger and the United States are committed to an ongoing diplomatic dialogue to define the future of their bilateral relations,” the statement added.

According to senior military officials speaking to Reuters and The Associated Press news agencies, US troops and certain equipment have already commenced their departure from the country.

The intention is to evacuate all lethal, hazardous, or classified equipment before the final departure of US troops.

However, officials noted that items deemed too costly to transport could potentially be left for use by the Nigerien military instead.

Acknowledging Niger’s significant role as a cornerstone in US counterterrorism efforts over the past decade, officials admitted to ongoing considerations regarding how to address the resulting gap.

Diddy’s former bodyguard claims he has abused many more women including the late Kim Porter

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ former head of security, Roger Bonds, has slammed the rapper for ‘’pretending to be sorry” in the apology video he shared after a 2016 video of him assaulting ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura emerged.

On Sunday, May 19, Diddy posted footage to address the clip CNN published on May 17 that showed him assaulting Cassie at a hotel back in 2016.

In his apology, Diddy did not name Cassie directly.

In the video, he admitted his actions and claimed he’s a changed man after seeking therapy for his violent behavior toward women.

He added, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you have to do that. I was f***ed up — I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video.”

Reacting, Roger Bonds, who worked for Diddy as his head of security from 2003 to 2012, accused Diddy of not only abusing Cassie but also the late actress Kim Porter, who was in a relationship with the rap mogul for 13 years.

Bonds asked Diddy if he was also at rock bottom when he assaulted his children’s mother, Kim Porter, or when he assaulted his ex Gina Huynh.

Bonds also suggested Diddy has victimised more women writing, “I guess you sorry and was at rock bottom for YRS AND YRS CAUSE YOU WAS WHIPPING NOT ONLY HER ASS & KIMS ASS BUT OTHERS TO. LETS REFLECT!! HARLEM TO HOLLYWOOD SOON COME.”

Gina Huynh once claimed the rapper stomped on her stomach and punched her in the head during their five-year relationship.

Huynh, who goes by the nickname Virginia V, leveled the allegations in a 2019 interview that resurfaced in 2023 in light of Cassie’s bombshell lawsuit against Diddy.

“He stomped on my stomach really hard — like, took the wind out of my breath,” Huynh told blogger Tasha K at the time. “I couldn’t breathe. He kept hitting me. I was pleading to him, ‘Can you just stop? I can’t breathe.’”

Huynh, 31, claimed the rapper, 54, then grabbed her by the hair and was “punching” the back of her head. Eventually, she started fighting back because she had “enough of his s–t.”

After Kim Porter’s death, many pointed fingers at Diddy as they alleged she was killed because she was planning to release a tell-all book.

Now, with his former head of security alleging that Diddy assaulted Kim Porter and Gina Huynh, internet users are revisiting Kim’s death.

However, some reacted by calling out the bodyguard for not doing anything when the abuse was going on.

This is not the first time Roger Bonds has accused Diddy of abusing several women, including Cassie.

Earlier this month, in an interview with News Nations’ Chris Cuomo, Bonds said he witnessed the rap mogul flying women across state lines for parties and inviting strange men he’d “never seen before” into the hotel rooms.

Bonds also claimed he witnessed Diddy abuse Cassie on more than one occasion, noting he intervened a few times to stop the attack.

Bonds recalled, “There’s definitely times that he was abusive physically. [Diddy and Cassie] were at a dinner, and she was talking to a manager. He got very upset about that and got very abusive that day. I grabbed him and said, ‘What are you doing?’ Some of the damage was already done.”

Michael Cohen calmly admits ‘stealing ‘ $30000 from Trump Organization

Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen has admitted to stealing $30,000 from the Trump Organization after overstating how much he needed to be repaid for paying funds to a poll-rigging tech company called Red Finch.

Cohen was once a Trump loyalist who has become one of his biggest foes. Trump’s defence team says he turned on the former US president after he was denied a White House job.

On Monday, May 20, Cohen testified that he handed the CEO of the company $20,000 in cash in a brown paper bag in exchange for services that included rigging 2016 election polls in Donald Trump’s favour

But when Trump’s chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg asked him during a mid-2017 meeting whether he needed to be reimbursed $50,000 for this, Cohen agreed and pocketed the difference, he said.

"You did steal from the Trump Organization based on the expected reimbursement from Red Finch, correct?" Trump lawyer Todd Blanche, his voice rising to a high pitch, asked Cohen.

"Yes, sir," Cohen calmly replied.

Trump broke away from his eyes-closed position during this exchange and popped a mint before appearing to pay close attention to Cohen’s testimony.

"Have you paid back the Trump Organization for the money you stole from them?" Blanche asked later.

"No, sir," Cohen responded.

In one of the final questions he was asked during cross-examination, Michael Cohen answered “no” when asked whether a conviction would benefit him financially.

The opposite is actually true, Cohen claimed, saying that an acquittal would give him more material to discuss on his podcast and other media appearances.

"It’s better if he’s not [convicted] because it gives me more to talk about in the future,” he testified.

Former President Donald Trump is sitting through the fifth week of a trial where he is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree.

To secure a conviction, prosecutors will need to show that Trump not only falsified business records related to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels, but that he did so to illegally conceal information from voters that could have hurt his 2016 presidential chances — a crime that escalates these charges from a misdemeanour to a felony.

ChatGPT set to alter voice following comparison to Johansson

0

OpenAI has announced plans to remove one of the voices used by ChatGPT after users likened it to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.

The similarity was noticed in the chatbot’s “Sky” voice option, which reads responses aloud to users, during the presentation of features for its new model.

The conversational upgrade to its AI chatbot drew comparisons to the 2013 film Her, starring the actress.

OpenAI stated that the voices offered in ChatGPT’s voice mode were meticulously chosen through a comprehensive process lasting five months.

This process involved collaboration with professional voice actors, talent agencies, casting directors, and industry advisors.

The film Her, set in the near-future, features Joaquin Phoenix falling in love with his phone’s operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

Director Spike Jonze emphasized that the film is not solely about technology or software, but rather about the quest for love and intimacy.

Addressing the comparisons, OpenAI clarified on Monday that the voice is not meant to be an “imitation” of the star.

“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice,” it said in a blog post.

it is “working to pause” the voice while it addresses questions about how it was chosen in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

What is AI, how does it work and what can it be used for?

Despite this, when OpenAI showed off its new model GPT-4o on 13 May, boss Sam Altman referenced the name of the film on X.

During the demonstration of its more human-like conversational abilities, the chatbot told an OpenAI staff member: “Wow, that’s quite the outfit you’ve got on”.

It also said “stop it, you’re making me blush” when complimented.

But amid memes and posts about ChatGPT – featuring gifs of the film’s lonely protagonist Theodore Twombly – were also critical takes on the voice.

“This is giving such “female character as written by men” vibes,” said one person on X.

“Why is she so obsequious and flirty?”

OpenAI’s blog post detailed that the five voices integrated into its chatbot were sourced from collaborative efforts with voice actors.

The desired traits of being multilingual and possessing an “approachable” or “charismatic” tone, evoking a timeless quality, were focal points in crafting these personalities.

Before finalizing the voices, OpenAI individually engaged with selected actors, discussing the company’s vision for human-AI interactions and the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and risks.

While the advanced voice features showcased at the spring update event have not yet been implemented for ChatGPT users, OpenAI plans to offer them to subscribers seeking faster responses and priority access to new features in the forthcoming weeks.

Accept our independence and stock threatening us – New Taiwan president to China

Taiwan’s newly inaugurated president William Lai has called on China to stop threatening the island and accept the existence of its democracy.

He urged Beijing to replace confrontation with dialogue, shortly after being sworn in on Monday.
He also said Taiwan would never back down in the face of intimidation from China, which has long claimed the island as its own.

China responded by saying, “Taiwan independence is a dead end”.

“Regardless of the pretext or the banner under which it is pursued, the push for Taiwan independence is destined to fail,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at the daily press briefing on Monday afternoon.

Beijing holds a strong dislike for William Lai and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), viewing them as pro-independence.

Since Lai’s election win in January, China has intensified military incursions around Taiwan’s waters and airspace, raising fears of conflict.

In his inauguration speech, Lai described these actions as the “greatest strategic challenge to global peace and stability.”

Despite his firm stance, the 64-year-old Lai adhered closely to the approach of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, known for her cautious but steady handling of relations with Beijing.

Lai, a former doctor turned politician, won a three-way presidential race in January, securing an unprecedented third term for the DPP.

He served as Tsai’s vice-president since 2020 and as her premier before that.

In his earlier political career, Lai was known for his more radical pro-independence stance, earning Beijing’s ire and the label of “troublemaker.”

Chinese state media even suggested he should be prosecuted for secession ahead of the polls.

The Chinese government has yet to issue a statement on Lai’s inauguration.

However, the Chinese embassy in the UK held a press briefing over the weekend, urging the UK government not to endorse the event.

Earlier last week, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned that Taiwan’s new leader “must seriously” consider whether he seeks peaceful development or confrontation.

And just as Mr Lai was being sworn in, China’s Commerce Ministry announced sanctions against several US companies “involved in arms sales to Taiwan”.

But on Monday, Mr Lai struck a far more conciliatory note. He reiterated he would not do anything to change the status quo – an ambiguous diplomatic status, which doesn’t recognise Taiwan as a country despite its constitution and sovereign government. China insists on this and accuses major Taiwan allies such as the US of altering this delicate agreement by supporting the island.

Vowing peace and stability, Mr Lai also said he would like to see a re-opening of exchanges across the Taiwan straits including Chinese tourist groups coming to Taiwan. But he said people on the island must not be under any illusion about the threat from China and that Taiwan must further strengthen its defences.

This too was a continuation of Tsai’s policy. Taiwan’s former president believed that strengthening defence and earning the support of key allies such as the US and Japan was key to deterring China’s plans of invasion. Her biggest critics say this military investment risks provoking China, making Taiwan even more vulnerable.

Nevertheless, yearly defence spending increased up to about $20bn (£16bn) under Ms Tsai, and Mr Lai has pledged even more funds. Taiwan has purchased new battle tanks, upgraded its fleet of F-16 fighter jets and bought new ones, and has built and launched a fleet of new missile ships to patrol the 100-mile Taiwan strait.

Last September came the completion of what Ms Tsai considers the crowning achievement of her military program: Taiwan’s first indigenously developed submarine.

President William Lai (C), First Lady Wu Mei-ju (L) and Vice-President Hsiao Bi-khim (R) dance after the inauguration
Taiwan’s own allies are watching closely too, to see if his rhetoric is likely to aggravate tensions further. Mr Lai’s caution was also aimed at his American audience.

His vice-president Hsiao Bi-Khim, widely believed to be Ms Tsai’s protege, is yet another source of assurance for Washington. The 52-year-old was born in Japan and mostly grew up in the US, where she also served as Taiwan’s representative for three years.

Mr Lai also faces big challenges at home. Unemployment and cost of living cost the DPP the youth vote in January, and Taiwan’s economy is seen to be heavily dependent on its hugely successful semiconductor industry – it supplies more than half the world’s chips.

And a divided parliament, where the DPP no longer has a majority, is likely to deny him a honeymoon period. The differences spilled into the spotlight over the weekend when lawmakers were caught brawling in parliament over proposed reforms. The bitter dispute and the protests that followed marred Mr Lai’s address.

But how he deals with Beijing will be the biggest question that will determine his presidency, especially as both sides have had no formal communication since 2016.

Lawyer Hsu Chih-ming who attended the inaugurations told BBC Chinese that Taiwan had fared quite well under Ms Tsai but added that there is a need to maintain “good communications” with China.

“Lai said he was a ‘practical worker for Taiwan independence’. I hope he wouldn’t emphasise this too much and worsen cross-strait relations,” he said. “Otherwise all of us wouldn’t be able to escape if a war broke out.”

12 indicators that Zambia is at the tip of breaking down and what President HH must do to prevent future ethnic conflicts, sectarian unrests and ‘cold war chaos’- Chris Zumani

12 indicators that Zambia is at the tip of breaking down and what President HH must do to prevent future ethnic conflicts, sectarian unrests and ‘cold war chaos’

By Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba

.…Under HH, Zambia is a pure anocracy- neither a democracy nor autocracy and thereby at very high risk of political instability and violence across multiple sectors based on standard parameters of early triggers to civil unrests….

In Hebrews 14:12, the Bible says: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord”. Here, Christians are commanded to live in peace with everyone. This entails that Christians must not live under civil unrest or war. What is important for modern states is to be alert and timely respond to early warning signs for political instability and civil unrests.

1. So, what are the early signs of war or civil unrest and how can modern states prevent them from happening? According to Barbara Walter, a U.S. based Political Scientist who is specialist in international civil conflicts with over 20 years, the vital early signs of civil unrest in most countries are mainly two (1) democratic backslide and (2) political extremism.

2. As we speak, Zambia falls into both categories and all early warnings for political instability are ripe unless President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) takes urgent policy actions to contain and prevent it. When things are falling apart and national divisions as well sectarian tensions multiply, the president is the only person who can take political measures and exercise leadership wisdom to reverse and prevent any form of civil unrest before it happens.

3. There is a collective agreement from different stakeholders that president HH and UPND run the worst tribal and regional discriminatory government ever in the history of Zambia mainly dominated by three regions against the remaining seven. In 1994, the Rwanda genocide started with similar incidents and complaints of political tribalism and ethnic nationalism by one group against the other. Today, stakeholders are complaining that “hate speech” is now a crime against “Tonga people only” while similar injuries against other ethnic groups like Bembas, Nyanja, etc are merely ignored. This is a catalyst for ethnic hatred and physical violence!

4. The mainly Hutu Rwandan ruling politicians ignored all early warnings of civil disobedience until Kigali saw bloody massacres of rival citizens and ethnic groups in horrific atrocities. Professor Barbara Walter warns that “once a political parties or governments are mostly grouped around race, ethnicity, religion or regionalism, they pose immediate triggers to political instability and civil unrests”. This is where Zambia is sitting today under the President HH and the UPND government in the eyes of many stakeholders.

5. In 2006 when a group of Tonga elders declared that “only a Tonga can succeed a Tonga” in referring to HH and Anderson Mazoka, UPND made tribalism their party policy and many of us perceive them that way now that they in power. In 1994, within 100 days, over 200,000 Hutus participated in the genocide killing of over 800,000 Tutsi civilians and moderate Hutu because of political tribalism and regionalism. Tribalism is bad politics anywhere and president HH must kill it aggressively and openly eradicate it in the UPND government. Otherwise, it constitutes early warning to political instability for Zambia.

6. When some Barotseland activists get courage to openly denounce President HH or even propose to block him from entering “their country”, it is a sign that national unity is broken and the political legitimacy of the sitting president is compromised. When Cuundu Chaitwa, Barotseland activists, Umodzi Kumawa, Kola foundation, Lamba traditionalists, Luapula United, etc ethic groups start to make news headlines regularly, HH must sense political danger and start taking reconciliatory and uniting measures.

7. President HH must sense political danger for Zambia ahead if key stakeholders are agreeing that he has weaponized law enforcement agencies, judiciary and parliament to “steal and block” ECL and PF through Miles Sampa in order to create a one party state. Given that PF is the largest opposition party with MPs, councilors, mayors and members across the country, this tyrannical gesture of HH has both undermined democracy as well as triggers danger to political stability if not well handled to restore the situation.

8. When income inequality and cost of living is too high among citizens and you see Zambians booing a sitting president in a stadium, their own Bally who was voted by the majority 2.8 million voters few years ago, then we must be more worried about this pattern politically. We must be concerned about HH’s reaction too. Either way, this is an early warning signal for political instability ahead if President HH himself takes things for granted. Anywhere, hungry citizens are angry people! And power belongs to the people.

9. When Zambia police are brought to a level of being perceived as partisan political tools of UPND and State House to oppress, harass and torment the Sixth President, opposition leaders and those who disagree with government, then we have a big problem because citizens are closely watching. Professor Barbara Walter empirically points out that “anocracy ( a country that is neither a democracy nor an autocracy) is the first early warning to political instability and civil war in many countries”. By killing democracy, HH is directly killing political stability and peace!

10. Numbers don’t lie- the Law Association of Zambia, Zambia Human Rights Commission, EU, USA, Swedish, Zambia Catholic Bishops, OCIDA, former President Edgar Lungu, Mast Newspaper, Diggers Newspaper, Daily Nations, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, Dr. Fred M’membe, Harry Kalaba, Edith Nawakwi, Saboi Imboela, Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa, Winter Kabimba, KBF, Sean Tembo, Jackson Silavwe, Chishala Kateka, Apostle Dan Pule, Chilufya Tayali, Peter Sikamba, NGO leaders, many church leaders and scholars are all complaining that HH has shrunk democratic spaces and human rights violations are too high in Zambia.

11. Today, the UPND government is seen as the first regime that hates the Catholic Church and openly disrespects Catholic bishops, priests and other religious leaders by either using police call outs, bagging into their church offices or calling them derogatory names like “the Lucifers of Zambia”. The UPND is the first government that has openly sustained “a Cold War” with the Catholic Church with political pump, malice and violence. All these are early signs of political instability which president HH must deliberately and personally confront and manage.

12. This morning, a mob of UPND members stormed Kabwata police station to report and demand that Former President, Edgar Lungu be arrested. Zambia Daily Nations, Koswe, Zambian Watchdog, etc have all declared Lungu as ‘a violent politician, a true snake who must be arrested or given house confinement’. This is not politically health or necessary! Look. Even at the heart of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, propaganda media houses fuels more citizen anger, bitterness, violence and massacres. These are crucial lessons for HH to learn from and avoid Zambia falling into the same trap.

Policy Recommendations for President HH at hand to contain the political storm:

1. Where we are today in Zambia, all the early warnings of civil unrest and political instability are ripe and evident. It is only one person now who can turn this political tide into both political calmness, sovereign grace and national unity we all need and pray for as a nation. President HH himself!

2. President HH must urgently call for a “National Reconciliation and Healing Commission or Dialogue” for all key governance stakeholders to discuss and seek national love, unity, reconciliation as a nation and country. This is urgent!

3. No one is taking about a government of national unity, but a national forum for reconciliation and unity. It is not too late, HH is our leader, and HH has all legal powers to bring every knee of political-economic confusion to bow and every tongue confess “One Zambia, One Nation” in love, peace and unity.

This is the best starting point and everything will fall in place politically. We need a United and peaceful Zambia than the current tide of anger, bitterness, tensions and hostility in the sky!

THE POLICE SHOULD STOP GIVING EDGAR UNNECESSARY ATTENTION – ROMEO KANGOMBE

By Romeo Kangombe

Edgar Lungu is politically dead, as opposition leader he can’t even face the media. The police should stop giving Edgar unnecessary attention and publicity. Allow him to move around so that citizens can pay their last respect to his dead political career which will be buried in 2026.

The state is sitting on a lot of information regarding criminal activities, abuse of office and crimes committed by the former head of state and out of respect he has been treated in a dignified manner.

We must not treat Edgar Lungu the same way he treated us because the citizens will not tell the difference. We must teach Edgar Lungu and minions how democracy works.

Edgar Lungu is a very cruel person who is ready to kill for politics. Do you think if Edgar Lungu was President he would allow Hakainde Hichilema to meet clergymen freely? We all know what would have happened in Kabwe if Edgar was the one with the instruments of powers. We must resist the temptations of returning evil for evil.

Edgar Lungu never believed in freedom of speech, he sent thugs to attack radio stations even when HH was just having a phone interview. He closed the post newspaper and Prime TV in order to suppress opposing views.

Give Edgar Lungu instrument of powers again and see how many UPND members will die. This is the truth. Do not be deceived by fake humbleness, Lungu is still the same person and by the way he has never apologized for atrocities he committed against the citizens of this country.

Citizens were gassed, markets burnts, innocent people were gunned down in cold blood in the name of politics. Hakainde Hichilema’s house was raided, workers tear gassed and tortured but today HH has treated Lungu with respect and love. HH restrained all us from revenging what Edgar and minions did to us because heaven knows what I could have done.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) believes in tenets of democracy, this is why opposition political parties can freely wear their party regalia something which was a taboo under the reigns of Edgar.

We also wish to advise Edgar Lungu not to undermine the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema. As a former head of state, he must show a good example in respecting the laws of the country. No one is above the law, Edgar Lungu has no immunity to commit crimes.

To those who want to take advantage of the free political space to cause anarchy, the law will visit you. We are ready to effect citizens’arrests on anyone who breaks the law.

Edgar Lungu Has Gone Too Far

0

Edgar Lungu, the immediate former republican president of Zambia, has been very active in the news lately.

After being defeated at the polls in August 2021, the man tried some antics but then appeared to have settled down in some kind of retirement. Once, he even spoke blatantly that he wouldn’t go back to politics, and those calling on him to do so were wasting their time.

Lo and behold! The man has reappeared as if possessed! Only he knows if someone is instigating him to do what he is doing or if, in his own skewed thinking, he honestly believes that less than three years later, Zambians have forgotten the wasted years that his tenure as head of state was.

I will not waste time recounting the many wrong, unpleasant, and downright despicable things he did, sponsored, or condoned during his tenure. Those who hold otherwise, pretend to have forgotten, or claim he was a better leader are free to hold those views.

My focus is drawn only to his current antics, the worst yet being his utterances at the so-called prayer service he and his ilk held yesterday.

What makes Edgar Lungu think that this country is in such a crisis as to warrant an unconstitutional change of government?

Exactly what is he implying or telling us by his words? And if he is visited by the law, he will claim harassment, shrinking democratic space, and all those “politically correct” and incensed words they use.

Is Mr. Lungu inciting Zambians to rise against a democratically elected government? Is he plotting something more nefarious that we dare not mention? Exactly where is he drawing this power from to taunt, dare, disrupt, and disrespect? Which Zambians does he think he is representing?

What does he mean by saying that 2026 may be too far, and it’s possible to get a full-term birth before 9 months?

“This pregnancy we are carrying, maybe we will reach 2026, or maybe we will give birth sooner. When the time has come, it has come. When the hour has come, you can’t stop it. Those who are saying 2026, it may be far. It’s possible to get a full-term birth before 9 months, only God knows. People are talking about the 2026 elections, but I’m here to tell you that we may not even reach 2026 because we may deliver a baby before that time.”

And he prides himself on being “uwalubuli” – a person who likes to fight.

Incredible!

Those are very scary, dangerous, and reckless words to utter by a man who has not only studied the law but also held the office of a former president.

It’s ironic that the same people claiming that they can’t assemble or organize are the same ones enjoying so much freedom to spew garbage. Freedoms that only a few months ago, when they held power, they didn’t allow the people they now claim are persecuting them.

Edgar Lungu has yet to escape through some roof or something for his life—and not once. He has yet to be arrested and spend time in jail for nothing. He enjoys immunity from prosecution despite the many rotten things he did and keeps doing, and that really is the reason he will do it.

Please don’t take Zambians or the current leaders for fools. You are still without ideas.
The same clueless man who entered and left State House is the same man rabble-rousing today. Everyone who is critically objective knows that everything Edgar and his minions are complaining about would have been worse had he and his party continued to be in power.
It is strange that a man who has held the revered office of president and served as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces could make such careless and dangerous statements all in the name of populism.

How he fails to see that he keeps embarrassing himself is honestly beyond the grasp of any right-thinking human. Today, he says he smells; tomorrow, he’s a snake and a dove. Whatever modicum of respect some people held for you is being lost at your own doing.

Even when he doesn’t agree with the current regime, there are better ways to do it, befitting his status. If what he is really after is positive change, he could put his weight behind someone else, prop and mold them. But no, it has to be him! Because Zambia is so desperate that we would look at him again.

Sir, please check yourself. The path you’re treading is dangerous for Zambia. It may not be so for you, but we do not wish for ugly scenes on your account. You’ve already done enough harm to this country, more harm than anybody else who held that office has.

Please live with some dignity and stop starting fires that you have no capacity to quench. Your antics are going too far.

GOVERNMENT FRUSTRATED BY ZESCO’S FAILURE TO FOLLOW LOAD MANAGEMENT SCHEDULE

GOVERNMENT FRUSTRATED BY ZESCO’S FAILURE TO FOLLOW LOAD MANAGEMENT SCHEDULE

The Zambian government has expressed mounting frustration over Zesco’s continued failure to adhere to the load management schedule that has been publicly shared. Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga voiced his concerns, stating that the inconsistency poses a significant threat to economic growth and negatively impacts citizens’ daily lives.

In a recent interview on Diamond TV’s hard hitting show, COSTA, Mulenga emphasized the importance of Zesco sticking to the power supply schedule.

“The biggest challenge that people like Chanda and myself and other Small Enterprises have been complaining about is that when power is supposed to go at 08:00hrs, it goes at 06:00hrs; instead of it coming back at 12:00hrs or 14:00hrs, it comes at 19:00hrs,” he explained, highlighting the widespread disruption caused by the unpredictable power outages.

The unpredictable load shedding has led to numerous complaints from customers, particularly in Lusaka, where residents have experienced uncommunicated increases in load shedding hours, severely disrupting their daily routines.

During the interview, Minister Mulenga also addressed the broader economic challenges facing Zambia. He acknowledged that 2024 is expected to be a particularly tough year due to the harsh economic climate. The government’s revised economic growth forecast projects that the economy will grow by only half of the initial target.

“It’s quite a challenging time,” Mulenga remarked.

“Unfortunately, this year, we are going to witness a decline in the growth of our economy. Last year, our growth was projected to be at 4.3%, but due to various factors, including a reduction in water levels in dams, this has negatively impacted production activities and our economy.”

The minister highlighted the cascading effects of the energy crisis on Zambia’s economy, pointing out how reduced hydroelectric power production has led to a decline in foreign exchange reserves, increased inflation, and overall economic instability.

“Indeed, this year, it’s going to be a challenging moment for business activities,” he concluded.

Zambia, heavily reliant on hydro energy, is currently grappling with an energy crisis, facing up to 12 hours of load shedding daily. The Southern African nation is among the many countries suffering from the severe droughts brought on by El Niño, making worse the risk of millions of lives being pushed into poverty.

ECL SAYS HE IS A SNAKE HE ATE IN MBALA ; HE REMAINS UNREPENTANT FOR THE KILLING ATROCITIES OF NSAMA NSAMA AND OTHERS , DEBT MOUNTAIN , ETHNIC HEGEMONY

By Mark Simuuwe

As in a joking mood , ECL goes to address congregants in Kanyama today and describes himself as a snake , then claims that HH would not reach 2026 .

He then goes and misquotes the Bible on the contextual meaning of the snake ; he describes himself as a snake . Indeed ECL is a serpent!

While ECL is known for his evil matrix of bloodshed and his love to see blood in the country as he did when he saw many to death under his leadership, he should be reminded that he is not God to claim HH would not reach 2026.

What exactly does he mean when he says HH will not finish his term ? It is not the first time ECL is saying this . What is his evil plan on HH and the nation ? We must all watch ECL statements closely as he goes on rampage claiming to be practicing politics and wanting to incite people .

To some of us who think differently , ECL is up to serious evil !

Many of us recall , often time , ECL would wear a lamb – skin then use the same pulpit to cause bloodshed among citizens like the evil King at the time of the Children of Isreal in Egypt . ECL would gather for prayers at his time and an hour after prayers , his carders would attack citizens with unregistered guns and machetes . This is exactly how the serpent works . The word serpent means , a specialist at deception ; this is what ECL is good at – then bites with venom and shed blood after wards .

It is under his reign that w Lawrence Banda died , Mapenzi Chibulo died , Nsama Nsama died and many others in very tyrannical undertakings .

It is under his reign that a strange bloody experience stormed Zambians in the name of gassing and magic in which gassers could disappear and turn into cats … as narrated by police. It is under this gassing fiasco , that a police officer was punished for telling the nation that gassing suspects were finally caught . This punishment of an officer by ECL administration, up to now , is suspicious!

A shock of his life is fast approaching again . Zambians may recall that this is the man who challenged God that he would hand over power to himself and went to the extent of “practicing what looked like charms” by eating a snake in Mbala , taking advantage and hiding in the military parade and practice.

But like Nebuchadnezzar, God wrote on the walls of ECL’s bedroom that his days were numbered and his space was being given to a serious person to fight corruption and ensure all Ukwa bags full of stolen money are recovered for the poor citizens.

What ECL is supposed to do is to explain to the nation how his family acquired the properties they are losing and where they got the money from , than trying to play tricks of being politically relevant so that once the allegations reach him , citizens may conclude he is being pursued due to his political ambitions. Such politics is outdated !

Many people may recall that ECL could teargas worshipers ; citizens do remember that ECL tear-gassed Dr Nevers Mumba in Eastern Province together with other worshippers.

Clearly , as Hon Chabinga states , something is not okay in the mind of the former head of state . We should have listened to Hon Chabinga .

We all know that ECL has a bad heart . When he hates , he hates to kill . He does not forgive – this is his true identity. This is the man who closed all media houses that ever criticized or spoke against his leadership. He fired whoever was from what he called Zambezi clan and divided the country to the extent of creating ethnolinguistic rivalry.

Shamelessly, he does not realize that when he talks of coming back , the blood of those he killed is crying . Children of Nsama Nsama are parentless due to ECL’s bloodthirsty leadership .

Joseph Kaunda’s child is parentless . Mapenzi Chibulo’s child is parentless , Lawrence Banda ‘s child is parentless all because of the barbaric leadership that ECL administered . Kasongo is gone !

When ECL talks of coming back , those workers who lost jobs after he closed Indeni are listening and they have to teach him a lesson soon .

When he says he is coming back , the 258000 farmers whose future he destroyed by failing to pay for goods supplied to FRA are listening . The over 39,000 of youth teachers he failed to recruit and are now teachers are also listening.

The over 14,000 health workers he condemned to the street due to unemployment but today have jobs are also listening .

The civil servants he fired based on ethnicity are also listening . Police officers who voted against him due to his bad leadership are also listening .

The soldiers in all Barracks who voted for HH are also listening .

The citizens who today are going through problems because of the debt mountain , ECL bad mining policies leading to serious unemployment at KCM are also listening .

In summary , ECL should not think that people admire the barbaric leadership he made us go through simply because the few basic necessities prices have gone up . These are matters that will be addressed soon through an already established strategic plan under the UPND Administration, and he will have nothing to tell the people . UPND came with a framework for economic recovery and many of such issues arising from a previously badly run country will soon be history.

Truth be told , the ruins that ECL caused to our economy are being felt now and all may not be resolved in less than 2years . As many have observed , more time has been spent negotiating the debt that ECL caused … yet the one who caused it with his minions want to be Champions of propaganda that the economic woes are because of UPND ; turning round forgetting that the chaos they caused was futuristic in consequences .

Sadly, the few noisy PF carders who voted for him are still making noise like they did but were fortunately the minority.

They cheated him into believing he had support until he was ejected from leadership . They have continued cheating him even today that he would return power and kill more citizens.

The PF MPs that supported him hoping he could win , will now think twice about their political journey . If ECL thinks properly , he must think twice about his intrinsically motivated self deception about victory .

His political journey will end badly and he will remain a bad example of a losing president in the history of Zambia and the whole world .

Edgar Lungu should be treated as a danger to Society hence a House arrest could be appropriate at the moment

IMPLEMENTORS TEAM ‘S OPINION!!!

Lusaka – 19th May, 2024.

2026 KUTALI – LUNGU.

… Sometimes a baby can be born before 9 months. I’m a snake and I fear no one as he campaigns at his branch ( Dunamis Miracles Church ).

Since Zambia ‘s Independence, we haven’t been subjected to a foolish former Head of State like Mr. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU! We have written many publications about him with the recent one tagging him as a ” SINONO” who wants to come back home so as to consume us. The man is indeed a snake and should never be tolerated in any room because he is poisonous!

In today’s address at a PF aligned Church , Dunamis Miracles, Mr. Lungu ‘s bitterness has shocked the World. His intentions about President Hichilema and the UPND New Dawn Administration have been made clear, ” He wants to overthrow the Government.” However, we don’t understand which means he wants to use hence we call for the serious analysis of his bitter Words which do not build the Nation.

HIS WORDS AT A PF ALIGNED CHURCH:

” 2026 is far, sometimes a baby can be born before 9 months.
I’m a snake and I fear no one.”

The above Words are pregnant with several interpretations hence we are at liberty this evening to interpret them in our understanding .

OUR VIEW:

A ). Lungu knows where his defense is. He has support from some of those he left in the key governance institutions.
Possibly, these are pretenders who are frustrating the efforts of President HH and the UPND New Dawn Administration.

B ).Mr. Lungu is a ” SINONO,” he understands very well that he can’t be voted back if he were to stand in 2026, but his aim is to cause confusion and frustrate the efforts of President HH and the UPND New Dawn Administration.

C ). Mr. Lungu has never loved President HH. All those who understand his history may agree with us hence the man has not accepted him as a President. In all his actions, he is trying to test his actions so as to cry the victim when action is taken against him.

WAY FORWARD:

1 .President HH and the Government shouldn’t take Mr. Lungu lightly , but should take him as a bitter politician who should be dealt with politically.
The Government is too big to fail to handle such a finished politician.

2 .If the UPND New Dawn Administration fails to clean the System by the end of this year then we should be prepared to see more drama next year. Mr. Lungu is a snake that’s ready to poison the Nation with the help of the surrogates in the system.

3. Mr. Lungu should be treated as a danger to Society hence a House arrest could be appropriate at the moment.

We shall not sit and fold our arms while watching a finished politician that was defeated 3 years ago, chased from home by Zambians attempting to come back home while inciting violence and treasonous actions against the innocent Head of State. It’s high time the Minister of Home Affairs moved from words to ACTION against the Snake in our lovely Country.

Ours is to analyse, advise and recommend for implementation without fear or favour.

CONSIDER ME A JOKE AT YOUR OWN PERIL… I was president for seven years – Edgar Lungu

CONSIDER ME A JOKE AT YOUR OWN PERIL

…says Lungu as he reminds critics he was president for seven years

Lusaka… Monday May 20, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

Sixth President of Zambia Edgar Chagwa Lungu says his critics that his critics should deliberately cal him a joker at their own peril. H.E Lungu said anyone insisting he is a joke must recall that he diligently served the country for seven years as president.

He added thar before becoming the sixth president, he served as a member of Parliament for Chawama Constituency in Lusaka province.

Speaking during the UKA Special Day of Prayer at Dunamis Church in Lusaka on Sunday, an electrified Lungu said some people are having “verbal diarrhoea” because of him and UKA member despite referring them to as jokers.

“We are 13 political parties in UKA, and we are still growing. Some people think we are jokers. I was Republican President for seven years. How can I be a joker? I came from Chawama in 2011, I made my journey to State House in 2015, so it means I was joking that way, and you don’t think I was able to plan,” he questioned.

“The Bible tells us that be a serpent or as peaceful as a dove. So when you combine that snake and that peacefulness of a dove, I have both of them. I want to make this clear that that’s why they are having verbal diarrhoea when they hear Edgar Lungu.”

He narrated before the fully packed church that he was invited for a church meeting in Kanyama but that this morning, the place was filled with police presence and UPND carders with intent from carders to physically attack him.

“This morning, I was invited for a UCZ church meeting in Kanyama. They wrote to me on 14th February, 2024, and I said Bishop Rodwell Siame, nkesa (I will come). In the morning, when I woke up, I was told that the police had mobilized and they were at Kanyama Police Station. And they filled Kanyama with junkies and UPND carders so that when I go to church and come out, they will beat me up and then the police would come with teargas to restore ‘order and law’ but me being a snake that I am, I am here (at Dunamis) with you,” he added.

“When the time has come, it has come. When the hour has come, you can’t stop it! Those of you who know medicine and biology, there is a time that a child should be born in nine months, but others are born in eight months and half. They are saying 2026. Maybe it’s far.”

Dr. Lungu said it is only God who knows the future.

“Those saying 2026, maybe that is far, only God knows. God knows the leadership of this country. Don’t be fooled that we are jokers. And I want to emphasise that I don’t need anyone’s permission. We should not be afraid of an individual but the power of the people,” he concluded.

DON’T ACCEPT MWIIMBU’S APOLOGY – SEAN TEMBO TELLS CATHOLIC CHURCH

DON’T ACCEPT MWIIMBU’S APOLOGY – TEMBO TELLS CATHOLIC CHURCH

Opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) leader Sean Tembo has advised the Catholic Church not to accept the apology rendered by Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu.

On Saturday 18th May, 2024, Mwiimbu during a press briefing rendered his apologies to the Catholic Church for the incident which Police officers stormed a private meeting between former President Edgar Lungu and Bishop Clement Mulenga in Kabwe.

Tembo says an apology to the Catholic Church during his press briefing of yesterday afternoon should not be accepted by the Catholic Church because it is partial and half-hearted.

He says there were two parties having the said private meeting, that is the Bishop and Lungu.

Tembo wonders to under what moral standard did Mwiimbu find it necessary to apologize only to the Bishop and the Church, but not to the Lungu.

He says during his protracted press briefing, Mwiimbu kept on ranting about how Lungu is subject to the Public Order Act.

“I think Mr. Mwiimbu needs some basic education in the law. The legislation in question is titled the PUBLIC Order Act for a reason. Because it is meant to regulate PUBLIC gatherings. There was nothing PUBLIC about the private closed door meeting that the 6th Republican President was having with the Bishop in the Bishop’s office. If the law was meant to regulate private meetings, as Jack Mwiimbu seems to argue, then it would have been titled the PRIVATE Order Act. But it is not. And that is why it is titled the PUBLIC Order Act,” he said.

Tembo further says the Zambia Police, in their lame statement issued on Friday afternoon, claim that they had information that Lungu intended to address two public gatherings in Kabwe that day, and that is the reason they stormed his private meeting at the Bishop’s office.

He says it appears that the reasoning of the entire Zambia Police is beneath that of a two year old.

“If indeed the claims by the Police are true, then why did they not wait for the 6th President to actually hold the alleged public gatherings before challenging him? Why disrupt his private meeting in the Bishop’s office, based on speculation that he later intends to hold a public gathering?” Asked Tembo.

Tembo says Mwiimbu and his fellow sycophants in Government should be informed, in no uncertain terms, that Zambia is not their father’s country.

” Zambia belongs to all Zambians, including President Edgar Lungu. The 6th Republican President has a right to go wherever he pleases in this country, whenever he pleases, without any let or hindrance. That right is not and cannot be granted by Government.

“The freedom of movement that President Edgar Lungu must enjoy was bestowed on him at birth, by the Constitution of this Republic. The only way that President Lungu can be denied his Constitutional right to freely roam around the breadth and length of this country is if Jack Mwiimbu has suspended the Constitution.

“So the question that we perhaps need to pose to Jack Mwiimbu at this juncture is; have you suspended the Constitution of Zambia?” Said Tembo

´I do not fear one man´
…I fear the power of the people—ECL

Smart Eagles-19.05.24

The sixth President of Zambia H.E Edgar Lungu today declared that he is not afraid of any pressure emanating from various government wings and functionaries of President Hakainde Hichilema.

H.E Lungu said the only section of Zambians he respects or fears is the ´the power of the people of Zambia´ through the constitution, not a fellow man regardless of the political power they yield in an apparent reference to Mr. Hichilema.
“He´s just a man just like I am a so I don’t fear him I only fear ´the power of the people´,” said Lungu during a special Dunamis Miracle Church service organised by UKA, hosted by Rev. Dan Pule, a senior UKA member in Lusaka on Sunday.

The atmosphere during the service that was attended by all 13 UKA parties was electric and pregnant with ´change slogans ‘given the immense failures by the current government of Mr Hichilemas calls for an ´early election´ reverberated from every corner and every speaker.
“In a normal pregnancy it takes about 9 months for the mother to bear a child but this pregnancy (the current poverty situation under HH and UPND) cannot wait until 2026, this pregnancy wants an early birth,” said President Lungu amidst standing ovations.

Before Lungu addressed the congregants, interim UKA chairperson Sakwiba Sikota told the gathered members that the immense poverty Zambians are suffering today is a result of electing ´evil leaders in office´ in 2021.

“The bible says when bad people rule or thrive, people mourn and suffer but when good and wise people rule, “ said Sikota, “people rejoice and when leaders lie, their reign in reduced.”

The Dunamis event is a culmination of a myriad attempt by the Zambian opposition to hold peaceful rallies and mobile their members that have been denied by President Hichilema since he assumed office almost three years ago.

This has prompted local opposition and sections of the media to chant that the democratic space in Zambia has shrunk under Mr. Hichilema to its lowest level in almost six years.
No one is allowed to hold public rallies in Zambia since 2021 when Mr Hichilema took overpower in a highly polarised election.

His predecessor, Lungu is virtually under arrest, cannot be allowed to freely jog, walk or visit Zambians on the streets of Lusaka without being stopped by a battalion of heavily armed police with tanks and tear gas cannisters.

The Lungu Factor My Thoughts

Let’s be honest here, stopping Lungu’s movements has nothing to do with his safety but everything to do with him campaigning ba Jack naimwe. Come on Gentlemen we are not that lame, he can afford his own security. And what security does he need to go and see a bishop in a private meeting. If he walks in town with no harm? It’s your UPND youths that have threatened to harm him, they are the ones you should be warning.

You stripped him of his security, benefits and protocal as the former head of State according to the law. Today ati you are concerned about his safety? Boza

And arresting Lungu now might shake the core of this already highly divided country, if not immediately then on the ballot in 2026. It looks simple but try, you will unite everyone whose is against UPND.

Immediately UPND found the 65 million they should have presented their case in parliament for the removal of his immunity. The mood was right at that time. Convicted and let him serve the sentence under house arrest. You could have gotten respect for the house arrest and cut of his politocal wings; that’s one some of us with our mindset should never be near power lol. However, such opportunity is gone and anything like that will come with heavy political consequences.

Now the Political and Economic conditions can’t support that so easily. You are playing with a match stick now, he is not the fuel or fire but a match stick. In fact the opposition that have aligned with him are selfishly wishing you do “harm” to him, so that they can use it during campaigns. Political experience should have taught you that former Presidents tend to become popular or very influential after 3 to 4 years e.g. KK, FTJ and RB

Ello to be honest, nobody was even considering Lungu to be threat to you by 2026. But you are making him an option by your wrong political moves. He is becoming a factor everyday and even swallowing the opposition political parties and the church.

Apa solution I would cause some confusion and bring a respected African leader to pretend to negotiate for Lungu kanshi he is negotiating for you, it can be quick and swift. Tell Lungu to retire and support the President and we leave his kids and wife alone. This lungu issue is now big political problem you have caused because of pride, if you had decided not remove his immunity for whatever reasons, why not make him a “friend”? It’s the golden rule even by the mafia ” keep your enemies closer”.

The Bembas say ” the bone you are fond of breaks your tooth”. Instead of always responding to Lungu, respond to an opposition you prefer. That opposition will easily try to over shadow him. Hearts and minds and not sticks and stones. Hello if PF comes back am running to Congo kiki

CEC fails to deny electricity exports amid steep local power cuts

As Zambia continues to grapple with a countrywide power shortage that has resulted in over 8 hours of power cuts for households and businesses, the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has gone mute on whether they are still exporting power at the expense of supplying local Zambians.

Zambian Business Times (ZBT) has received information from anonymous sources that suggest CEC has been accessing power from ZESCO, the state-run power company while continuing to export power at a time when local businesses face total collapse.

ZBT has reached out to CEC for confirmation and further details on the matter. Specifically, ZBT has requested information on the amount of power being exported, the breakdown of exports by country, and whether CEC has any plans to increase its investment in renewable energy sources to reduce its dependence on ZESCO.

ZBT has also raised the question of whether it is morally justifiable for CEC to continue exporting power accessed from publicly owned ZESCO while Zambian households and businesses are forced to endure power cuts.

Despite all these concerns that are affecting the nation CEC has remained mute on the matter.

Efforts to get a response from CEC have proved futile even after the Corporation confirmed receipt of the questions. Legal experts say Zambia should invoke the force majeure clause to halt exports and save it’s local businesses and households, but the power utility has only invoked this for it’s local bulk customers.

The situation highlights the challenges of balancing the needs of local and regional economies with the demands of the global marketplace. However, any country faced with such a situation is expected to opt to serve its local interests first as a total collapse of local companies who are the very reason for it’s existence means a complete abdication of responsibility.

As Zambia seeks to harness its natural resources to fuel economic growth, it must also ensure that the needs of its citizens are not overlooked for profit and for the benefit of a bloated and top heavy management structure of ZESCO which is not even selected on merit.

ZESCO has some of Zambia’s best and well trained engineers who are usually overlooked when appointments are made, leading to the current challenges of a failed implementation of energy generation diversification programe- Zambian Business Times (ZBT)

Absence of a Law to be Enforced by the Courts Deprives the Court Jurisdiction to Convict a Person

Absence of a Law to be Enforced by the Courts Deprives the Court Jurisdiction to Convict a Person

I have read comments made by my followers on my previous posts concerning then Nakachinda defamation of the President conviction. Some are asking me to check when the offence was committed. Obviously they are suggesting some archaic laid down the principle in some jurisdictions, that an appellate court will not set aside the conviction of an appellant merely on the complaint that he was tried and convicted under a repealed law if at that time there was an existing law which he should have been tried and convicted.Elsewhere in the world, the above archaic principle has been done away with.

In this thesis I address the issue of pending prosecutions under the repealed statute.In particular, I advance reasons relate to (A) the absence of a law to beenforced by the courts; (B) the absence of an offenseto be punished; (C) the release of an offender’s guilt;
and (D) the absence of power in the court to proceed with prosecution after a repeal of a law.

In the US, for example, it is familiar law that “the repeal of a statute pendinga prosecution thereunder without any saving clauseas to such prosecution will prevent its being furtherprosecuted, and this applies as well after judgmentand sentence pending an appeal duly taken therefromas before the final determination in the trial court.” These words were laid down as law inState v. Allen (44 Pac. 121) (1896).

Similar language was used by JudgeArnold, of Mississippi, who said:

“The proposition istoo plain to admit of discussion, that, after the repeal
of a law, no penalty can be enforced nor punishmentinflicted for a violation of its provisions, committedwhile it was in operation, unless provision be madefor that purpose.”

In 1921, Woods, Circuit Judgefor the Fourth Circuit, announced:

“The general ruleis that the unqualified repeal of a criminal statute expresses the legislative will that the acts which wereoffenses under it, done while the statute was in force, shall no longer be regarded as criminal; and shall notbe punished under the repealed statute.”

Fiftyyears earlier, Lord Campbell, C.J., in the leadingEnglish case of Regina v. Denton, declared;

“Thegeneral rule is that a statute from the time that it isrepealed cannot be acted upon”; and Earle, J., in hisconcurring opinion said:

“To say that proceedings can
nevertheless be followed up contravenes the sense of
the word repeal…. The repeal takes away the groundand makes the indictment bad in substance as well as inform.” This is still good law in England today.

From above court decisions in the US and England, it would seem then that the repeal of a statutecompletely destroys the possibility of continuing any prosecutions which were pending at the time the statuteupon which the prosecutions were founded is repealed, unless there is a saving clause within the repealingstatute, or in another statute which controls generallythe effect of repealing statutes upon pending prosecutions.

A careful reading of most cases which support conviction on repealed law does not reveal any adequate reason why thelaw should be as it is or should so remain.

In the Nakachinda case, the justification by the trial magistrate departed from the case before her, which was defamation of the President, to disparaging the judiciary. The accused was never brought before her for contempt of court or disparaging the judiciary. Therefore, disparaging the judiciary should never have been used as the ratio for the decision. The ratio for the decision in the Nakachinda case by the magistrate is based upon
the continued, thoughtless acceptance of, and upon an outworn theory that the function of the criminal law is purely and solely punitiveand vengeful.

The thesis presented in this and prior articlesis that the repeal of a statute should have no effectwhatever upon pending prosecutions founded upon theprovisions of the repealed statute.

When an offense is made, treason or felony, by an actof Parliament, and then those acts are repealed, theoffenses committed before such repeal, and the proceedings thereon are discharged by such repeal, and
cannot be proceeded upon after such repeal, unless aspecial clause in the act of repeal be made enabling such proceedings after the repeal for offences committed before the repeal.

Otherwise, the defendant must be released because the court lacks jurisdiction or power to proceed with the matter.

In the leading case of Hartung v. People (22 N.Y. 95) (1860), thecourt said:

“It scarcely required an examination ofauthorities to establish a principle so plain upon reasonas that life cannot be taken under color of the lawafter the only law under which it is authorized to betaken has been abrogated by the law-making power.”

In Halfin v. State (5 Texas, App. 212) (1878) the court said, “there is nolaw now in force in Caldwell County by which persons who may be charged under the act can lawfullybe punished.”

In Greer v. State (22 Texas, 588), the court held that a prosecution must be dismissed and “this for the obvious reasonthat no one can be punished except by virtue of a lawin force as to the offense in question at the time ofthe trial of the offender.”

The idea in all decisions above-mentioned, seems to suggest that when the law itself is wipedout, so nothing further can be done to prosecuteoffenses under the previously existing law. The destruction of the law seems to have some erasure-effect upon the proceedings so that they cannot go on.

In the Nakachinda case, the magistrate does not have any reason to justify why the accused should be convicted of defamation of the President, especially that the President publicly proclaimed in Parliament that defamation of the President law is repealed.

Every offense for which a man is indicted mustbe laid against some law and it must be shown tohave come within it. Such law may be the generalwritten or common law or the statute law. The offensemust not only come within the terms of such law butthe law itself must at the time of conviction be subsisting.

From the US and England case law, is aclear rule that if a statute create an offense and it isthen repealed, no prosecution can be instituted for anyoffense committed against the statute previous to itsrepeal.

Afterall, the end of punishment is not only to correct the offender but to deter others from committinglike offenses. But if the legislature has ceased toconsider the act in the light of an offense, those purposes are no longer to be answered and punishmentis then unnecessary.

In conclusion, my thesis is that a repeal of a law places the acts committed under them upon the same ground as they were beforethe act was passed. After repeal, absence of a law to be enforced by a court deprived the court jurisdiction to convict any person.

REPEALED: SECTION 69 OF, PENAL CODE

“69. Any person who, with intent to bring the President into hatred, ridicule orcontempt, publishes any defamatory or insulting matter, whether by writing, print, word of
mouth or in any other manner, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction toimprisonment for a period not exceeding three years.”

Repealed by SECTION 11 of the PENAL CODE AMENDMENT 2022

“11. The principal Act is amended by the repeal of section 69.”

Senegal’s Faye agrees to help resolve Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s impasse

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked his Senegalese counterpart, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to use his goodwill within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to help resolve disputes with Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Faye was in Ghana on May 17, 2024, for a day’s working visit after travelling to Nigeria. His call was intended to strengthen relations between Ghana and Senegal and to thank President Akufo-Addo for attending his inaugural ceremony in Dakar last April.

In January 2024, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso announced their withdrawal from the 49-year-old bloc after they were suspended by the group over military coups in all three nations.

They stated in a joint declaration that withdrawal from ECOWAS was a “sovereign decision” for the three states since the organization had “drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.”

Addressing a joint press conference at the Jubilee House after talks on Friday, President Akufo-Addo said Faye would lead the renewed efforts to get the three countries back into the ECOWAS fold after military takeovers in 2022 and 2023.

He said that during the talks, the Senegalese leader expressed support for ECOWAS’ efforts to bring the three nations back into the union and to the table for further negotiations.

“President Faye is very committed to seeing what he and the rest of us can do to reach out and revive the dialogue that would enable us to extend the hand of friendship and brotherhood to these three countries and find a way to bring them back within the ECOWAS community.

“His election was a source of reassurance to all of us who are interested in the democratic future of our region and of our continent. It appeared at one time as if Senegal’s reputation as a country committed to the principles of democratic accountability, respect for human rights, and rule of law, was being jeopardized.

“But fortunately, good sense prevailed, elections were held, and out of the elections, Bassirou Faye emerged as the clear convincing winner of the elections and the manner in which he ascended to the presidency has brought peace and unity to his country and that again Senegal is going to play a very important role in the development of the ECOWAS community has now been fully confirmed.

“We are lucky to have a new leader in place because I think he is also going to help us to try and resolve the big problem that we have in the ECOWAS community and that is the purported departure of three of the key nations in ECOWAS; Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, the President said.

President Faye, for his part, embraced the challenge to assist reunite ECOWAS with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

He thanked President Akufo-Addo for attending his investiture in April and for the hand of friendship and fellowship he extended to him following his election and assumption of office.

The 44-year-old won the March 24 election, receiving more than 54 per cent of the vote.

Zuma takes election battle cry to ANC’s heartland

South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma put on a show of strength in the historic township of Soweto as he campaigned for votes in the build-up to the 29 May general election.

Zulu warriors marched around Orlando Stadium with their spears and shields, men in camouflage sang and danced to revolutionary songs, while some of South Africa’s famous singers – including rapper Big Zulu – provided entertainment to the near capacity crowd at Saturday’s rally.

For Mr Zuma’s supporters a major coup was the presence of the man known as a disco king, Papa Penny.

Having announced his resignation from the governing African National Congress (ANC) last week, he has now joined the former president’s new party, uMkhonto weSizwe, which translates as Spear of the Nation.

“Unite Africa. Unite South Africa,” he said in a short address to the crowd, adding: “Phansi [Down with] tribalism.”

Mr Zuma’s supporters saw Papa Penny’s presence – he hails from the small Tsonga community – as significant as it challenged perceptions that the former president’s support only comes from his Zulu ethnic group, the biggest in South Africa.

But the star attraction at the rally was none other than the 82-year-old former president.

The crowd burst into chants of “Zuma, Zuma” as he walked into the stadium, while his increasingly influential daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, knelt in front of him and hugged him before he took his seat on the stage.

She serves on what is called the “national core” of the party, recently telling The Shady PHodcast: “My father is obviously the head, and I’m the neck.”

Mr Zuma’s decision to hold his biggest campaign rally in Soweto was significant because it is a stronghold of the ANC in South Africa’s economic heartland of Gauteng.

Soweto also has deep political symbolism as it was at the forefront of the struggle against the racist system of apartheid, which ended with the ANC’s rise to power in 1994.

But now, 30 years later, the ANC risks losing its outright majority as it faces a threat from Zuma’s breakaway party, as well as other opposition parties.

With this in mind, ANC leader and President Cyril Ramaphosa has been hard on the campaign trail in Mr Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Addressing voters on Saturday in Mandeni town, about 100km (62 miles) from the coastal city of Durban, Mr Ramaphosa said creating jobs was his priority, warning “small parties” like MK – the acronym by which Mr Zuma’s party is known – that they were looking down on the ANC at their peril.

“These small parties, the MK-what-what don’t really know us. They only know about us from the media. They will know us on 29 May,” he was quoted as saying by the News24 website.

Mr Ramaphosa ousted Mr Zuma as president in 2018 after a vicious power-struggle, culminating with the former president ditching the ANC last December and making a fresh bid for power under the banner of MK.

South Africa’s highest court is yet to rule on whether Mr Zuma can serve as a lawmaker in the next parliament. The electoral commission argues that the constitution bars anyone who was sentenced to more than 12 months in prison from doing so.

Mr Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in 2021 after being convicted of contempt of court for defying an order to appear before an inquiry investigating corruption during his presidency.

But his lawyers say he is entitled to become an MP as his sentence was reduced to three months after Mr Ramaphosa released him from prison in what widely seen as an attempt to placate the former president’s angry supporters.

Senior MK official Visvin Reddy told the BBC that he expected the court to give its ruling this coming week. Even if it went against their leader, MK would still contest the election, with Mr Zuma’s face remaining on the ballot paper, he said.

“We’ll go to parliament, change the constitution, and bring him in,” Mr Reddy added.

MK has set itself the target of winning a two-thirds majority in the election, though this appears to be an overly ambitious target. An Ipsos opinion poll released last month put the party’s support at only 8%.

And in a worrying sign for Mr Zuma, a large section of the crowd left before he finished his lengthy speech, which dwelt on political history.

While the Ipsos poll put the ANC’s support at 40% (down from the 57% it got in the 2019 election) the Social Research Foundation (SRF), which has been tracking polls on a daily basis, says the governing party has seen a surge in support in recent weeks as it steps up its campaign, the local City Press newspaper reports.

SRF head Frans Cronje said that if elections were held now, there was a likelihood that ANC could pass the 50% mark.

“According to our computer projection in the past four weeks, the ANC has been squeezing the life out of the opposition parties,” he is quoted as saying.

On the campaign trail in KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Ramaphosa urged his party’s supporters to come out in large numbers to vote.

“If we win in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, then we’ve won because those provinces have the most people,” he was quoted as saying at the rally.

Not surprisingly, there was deep hostility towards the ANC leader at Mr Zuma’s rally, with the crowd chanting “Down with Ramaphosa”.

“Power must come back to the people,” Mr Zuma said, in a speech delivered in the Zulu language.

Hitting out at white colonialists, he added: “People who came in ships and boats took over our country. They left us poor. We must take back the land our forefathers fought for.”

A few of his supporters wore T-shirts emblazoned with images of Mr Zuma and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, pointing out that the two were among the founding leaders of Brics – an alliance of major developing countries that seeks to rival the power of Western nations.

“Putin is our friend, a friend of Zuma,” MK supporter Dennis Zwide told the BBC, as he accused the West of exploiting Africa’s mineral resources.

“Africa is a rich continent, but its people are suffering because of the exploitation,” he added.

In its manifesto, MK has pledged to nationalise South Africa’s mines and banks if it takes power, despite the fact that these policies were widely discredited after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

“We want our children to study for free, especially those from poor households because the poverty we have was not created by us. It was created by settlers who took everything, including our land. We’ll take all those things back, make money and educate our children,” Mr Zuma said.

He also vowed to expel undocumented migrants, in a further sign of the populist stance he has adopted in an attempt to win votes.

To what extent he is succeeding will become clear in 10 days’ time when South Africans vote in one of the most pivotal elections in the post-apartheid era.

Trump is their candidate, and Jesus is their Saviour – Trump’s backers

Donald Trump is appealing more to Christians as he runs for president again. His support from evangelicals and other conservative Christians is still very strong.

Kimberly Vaughn from Florence, Ky said, “Trump believes in Jesus, and thinks America will fail without Jesus. ” She said this as she joined other people who also support the former president at a rally near Dayton, Ohio.

A lot of T-shirts and hats at the rally in March had religious messages on them, like “Jesus is my savior, Trump is my president” and “God, Guns & Trump. ” One man was wearing a shirt that said, “Make America Godly Again,” with a picture of Jesus and Trump.

A lot of people said in interviews that they thought Trump has the same Christian faith and values as them. Many people said they are against abortion and the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ community, especially when it comes to transgender people expressing themselves.

No one talked about Trump’s past actions or the criminal charges he’s facing now. This includes claims that he tried to keep secret payments to a porn star during his 2016 campaign. Fans believed that Trump stood for giving people another chance.

Many people see Trump as a supporter of Christianity and love for their country.

“I think he has faith in God, our military, and our country, America,” said Tammy Houston from New Lexington, Ohio.

Sherrie Cotterman from Sidney, Ohio said, “I prioritize my family and, in a bigger way, I prioritize America. ” “I would choose a president who openly admits he needs God’s strength more than his own, any day of the week. ”

In a lot of ways, this story is like ones we already know.

Approximately 80% of white evangelical Christians supported Trump in 2020, and a similar number supported him in 2016 according to two different surveys.

This campaign is new, but support for Trump has stayed strong. Even though there were other conservative Christian candidates to choose from, none of them had the legal problems and misconduct allegations that Trump has. In the Republican primary elections in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, Trump got a lot of support from white evangelical voters. He received between 55 and 69 percent of their votes.

Trump criticized another politician, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for making strict rules about abortion. In the past, some people who speak for Trump have said he is supportive of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Trump was the only Republican running for election who had a lot of legal problems. He was accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election and also of falsifying business records to influence the 2016 election with hush money.

Trump was the only GOP candidate who had owned casinos and been divorced twice. He was also accused of sexual misconduct, and one of the accusations was confirmed by a court.

Most voters in the Republican primary chose Trump by a large majority.

This has made some conservative evangelicals very upset because they think Trump is pretending to be religious and only using the Bible and prayer for show. People think he doesn’t have strong beliefs and is dealing with serious accusations of bad behavior while using aggressive speech and wanting to have a lot of power.

Karen Swallow Prior, a Christian writer and expert on literature, has criticized other evangelicals for supporting Trump. She said that the support in 2024 is even stronger than before.

She said in the past that Trump supporters wanted to believe that he shared their Christian faith, but they weren’t sure.

“Now his followers think they are right,” she said. “Even though Trump is unsure about abortion and LGBTQ issues, people just pretend those things don’t exist and don’t talk about them. ”

At the Ohio rally, many people said they think Trump has changed his ways and started living like a Christian.

“We have all done wrong. ” Vaughn said that Jesus spent time with sinful people, so he will also spend time with Trump. “It’s not important where Trump started, but where he is going and what he is trying to do with our country. ”

The Ohio rally had a recording of the national anthem sung by people who were found guilty of crimes during the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. Trump called them “patriots”.

At the beginning of the rally, a group gave out papers encouraging people to trust Jesus for salvation and to support the J6 patriots.

Caleb Cinnamon, a 37-year-old man from Dayton, said he is a Christian and cares a lot about stopping abortion. He mentioned that Trump picked three people for the Supreme Court, and in 2022 they made a big decision to overturn a previous ruling that made abortion legal all over the country.

“Donald Trump is the first president to openly oppose abortion and take action to support his stance,” he said. “Republicans have been promising to make changes to abortion laws since the 1990s, but they haven’t followed through on their promises. ”

Jody Picagli from Englewood, Ohio, said that her beliefs as a Catholic and her thoughts on abortion are very important to her.

“I believe in the right to live,” she said. “That’s really important for me. ” Just being good and having good values. I think people’s sense of right and wrong is off track. “We need to bring religion and the church back here. ”

She said that because the US Supreme Court is letting each state decide on abortion laws, a future President Trump may not have much influence on those laws.

“But I know he won’t ever go to an abortion clinic and visit it, like our vice president did,” she said, referring to Kamala Harris visiting a Planned Parenthood clinic in Minnesota in March.

Christians who support Trump also mentioned .

Trump endorsed by NRA and promises to uphold gun rights

Ex-president Trump told people with guns to vote next time there is an election. He said this to a big group of National Rifle Association members in Texas, where they said they support him for president again.

“We need to make sure that people who own guns are voting,” Trump said a day after campaigning in Minnesota during his criminal hush money trial. “I believe you are a group of rebels. ” “But let’s break the rules and vote this time. ”

Trump said that in the upcoming election, the Second Amendment, which is about the right to own guns, is very important. He claimed that if Democratic President Joe Biden is re-elected, he will take away people’s guns for sure. Joe has been trying to take guns away from law-abiding people for 40 years.

The Biden administration is trying to stop gun violence. They made a new rule to close a loophole that lets unlicensed dealers sell many guns without doing background checks.

Trump promised to keep supporting the Second Amendment, saying it’s in danger. He also said he’s the best friend of people who own guns while the US has more deaths from mass shootings than ever before. 42 mass killings happened last year, and 217 people died. It was one of the deadliest years ever.

Biden criticized the likely Republican candidate for president. He said Trump made inappropriate comments after a school shooting in Iowa. Trump said the incident was really bad, but then he said we need to move on from it. We need to keep going.

On Friday in Minnesota, Trump said, “You know, it’s really surprising. ” People who own guns and use them legally really like guns, but they don’t usually vote. But we still need their votes. There’s no one else to vote for because the Democrats want to ban guns and they will ban guns.

Trump criticized Robert F Kennedy Jr during his speech, calling him “radical left” and “a disaster,” and mentioning that Kennedy had labeled the NRA as a “terror group. ”

“Don’t worry about it. ” “Don’t throw away your vote,” he said. “He said you’re a bad group, but I say you’re very important to America. ” (Kennedy later said in a Fox News interview that he didn’t remember his 2018 tweet. ) “He said he doesn’t think they are a terror group and he supports the Second Amendment. ”

Trump said he will talk at the Libertarian Party’s meeting next week and will ask its members to vote for him.

“He said we need to join them. ” “We need to win that 3% because we can’t risk Joe Biden winning. ”

On Saturday, Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee said they made a new group called “Gun Owners for Trump. ” It’s for people who support gun rights and work with guns.

Biden wants to reduce gun violence a lot, so he made a special office to help with that. Kamala Harris is in charge of it. Biden wants Congress to make a law to ban assault weapons, which is something Democrats were scared to do in the past.

Harris said that Donald Trump is supporting the gun lobby and making the problem of gun-related deaths among children and teens worse. She and Biden will work to keep Americans safe from guns, while Trump will prioritize the interests of the gun lobby over the safety of our kids and communities.

When Trump was in charge, he promised to make gun laws tougher at times. After a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed and 17 others were injured, Trump promised survivors and their families that he would be very strict about checking people’s backgrounds before they can buy guns. He said he would stand up to the NRA (National Rifle Association), but later he changed his mind, saying that there wasn’t much support from other politicians for his idea.

Major organizations that support gun safety and have approved of Biden were going to protest close to the convention center in Dallas, where the gun lobby’s yearly meeting was taking place.

Trump has a lot of supporters in Texas, but the Democrats there believe they can win a Senate seat in November. US Rep Colin Allred is leading a campaign to try and beat Republican Ted Cruz. No Democrat has been elected to an important state job in Texas for 30 years, making it the longest streak in the country.

This researcher found billions in ‘invisible’ gold in Jo’burg’s mine dumps

As a teenager living on the East Rand of Johannesburg, Steve Chingwaru thought the flat-topped mounds of rock and earth that dotted the skyline were a natural feature of the cityscape. Jo’burg isn’t very windy, but when the wind does blow—usually around August—the air is filled with orange dust. “It gets in your hair, your clothes, and your throat,” says Chingwaru.

Now, barely a decade later, the 26-year-old geometallurgist is being flown up to the city of his youth on an almost weekly basis by mining companies who want him to help them extract maximum value from the mounds of orange dust. That’s because the mounds are made up of mine waste from the richest gold deposit ever discovered, and Chingwaru has just calculated that approximately 420 tonnes of “invisible” gold”—with a value of $24 billion—are buried in the Witwatersrand’s mine dumps.

The massive discovery came from research for his master’s thesis — that was so impressive it saw his degree upgraded to a PhD.

Soon after enrolling in a geology degree at Stellenbosch University, Chingwaru realised he didn’t want to be an exploration geologist. “Camping in the middle of nowhere wasn’t for me,” he says, flashing a winning smile. He was drawn to the nascent field of geometallurgy, which combines classic geology with metallurgy and typically involves working at a processing plant. For his academic research, Chingwaru focused on Johannesburg’s iconic mine dumps, known as “tailings” in the industry.

“They were already extracting the gold from these tailings,” he explains. “But they were only managing to get out 30 percent of the gold they contained.” I wanted to know what was happening to the other 70 percent… Where was it sitting? Why weren’t they getting it out? Seventy percent is a lot,” he says, before breaking into an unexpected chortle.

His research, which examined samples from mine dumps across the Witwatersrand, found that the majority of the gold was hidden in a mineral called pyrite (sometimes called “fool’s gold”) and was being entirely overlooked by the current extraction techniques. “We already know how to get gold out of pyrite,” he says, citing the example of the Carlin mine in Nevada. “But at the moment, all the tailings processors in South Africa are only extracting free gold using cyanide.”

Which begets an obvious question: why?

The answer is twofold. One, Chingwaru, is the first person to work out how much “invisible gold” is hidden in tailings across the Witwatersrand. And two, it will take a lot of time and effort to extract all 420 tonnes.

“His research shows that there is a lot of gold. The big question, however, is whether we currently have the technology to economically extract all of the gold and make a profit,” says Associate Professor Megan Becker, who works at the Centre for Minerals Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town (she was not involved in Chingwaru’s research). “Unless this can be done, no company will invest in it.”

The intense interest from several South African tailings reprocessors suggests it’s an investment they would be willing to make. Since news of his research got out, Chingwaru has spoken to some pretty senior figures in the South African gold industry: “They all said that, yes, it would be expensive to extract the gold, but they could still make a decent profit. Especially if the gold price stays where it is.”

To underline this point, Chingwaru has also received job offers from companies in Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United States.

Back to the start:

What makes Chingwaru’s discoveries even more remarkable is his challenging upbringing.

Chingwaru’s father died before he was born, so young Steve and his siblings were brought up by their entrepreneur mom, Peggy, in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Things started well enough, with Chingwaru attending a prestigious boarding school in Bulawayo. But the 2008 economic downturn hit Zimbabwe, whose economy was already in an imperilled state, particularly hard, leading to a hyperinflation crisis that left people queueing for everyday items like bread and cooking oil. School fees became unaffordable, and Peggy was forced to sell the family home to stay afloat.

“I didn’t see a future for myself in Zim,” remembers Chingwaru, who was 10 or 11 at the time. “It was my decision to move to South Africa.”

Moving to South Africa to live with his aunt and her children was, he admits, “scary at first, but when I got there, it was OK”, understating the challenges he faced. The first school he went to in South Africa was so far from his aunt’s place that he had to wake up at 4 am to get there on time. Commuting on overcrowded trains meant he’d often get home after dark and still have to do his homework. As tough as it was, there was never a question of giving up. “As a kid, you just do it,” he says. “I liked school. And my mom always told me, ‘If you go to school, everything will be all right.”

Once Chingwaru had transferred to a school that was within walking distance of his aunt’s home, he began to thrive, making many friends, dabbling in swimming and athletics, and excelling in the classroom. He did so well, in fact, that he got an award for coming first in the region for geography in his final exams.

As if this wasn’t enough of a career nudge, Chingwaru also had unfinished family business with the earth’s crust. In his final year of high school, he returned to Zimbabwe to see family and ended up visiting the ruins of Lithium Lodge, the grandiose mansion built by his grandfather, the larger-than-life prospector George Henry Nolan, in the 1950s. Despite being the first person to discover lithium in Zimbabwe, Nolan ended up losing most of his fortune, and his home was bombed during the Second Chimurenga (the Zimbabwean War of Liberation).

“I didn’t know I had this rich history,” says Chingwaru. “And I had no idea I had so many cousins… My grandfather had five wives.”

Moving on up:

After high school, Chingwaru decided to move once again—”I’d”had enough of Jo’burg,” he says—this time to the leafy and predominantly Afrikaans university town of Stellenbosch. “It was very different to anywhere I’d lived before,” he remembers. “But I liked it a lot. There are loads of trees. You can walk everywhere.”

Chingwaru’s success in high school geography led him to the university’s highly-rated Earth Sciences department. The possibility of his degree landing him a lucrative career as a mining geologist was another driver.

He excelled academically, but he also found time to wait tables and pull pints, indulge his passions for gaming and anime, and go for three-weekly runs. On top of it all, he also maintained a very active social life.

“He’s super personable,” says his PhD supervisor, Bjorn von der Heyden. “His number one attribute is that he is so nice and caring.” Von der Heyden, who first encountered Chingwaru as an undergraduate, was instantly impressed by the intelligent questions he asked in class and the unsolicited mentoring he provided to other students. While he is softly spoken, Chingwaru “doesn’t fade into the background because he gets involved and is genuinely interested in other people,” says von der Heyden.

After completing his honours with another professor, Chingwaru signed up for his master’s with von der Heyden. “He put together some great results, using really advanced techniques, that enabled him to upgrade to a PhD,” says von der Heyden. “Upgrading is a risk because you can end up with nothing if it goes wrong. I only offer it to my most exceptional students.”

Chingwaru didn’t just obtain his PhD; he did so in record time, finishing a full year ahead of schedule. “There were lots of late nights and cancelled weekends,” he remembers. “At one point, I thought I wouldn’t make the [self-imposed] deadline, but I pushed through.”

What made it even more demanding—but also more interesting—was the multidisciplinary nature of geometallurgy. “I was going to the tailings to collect sand. Doing lab work with cyanide and lasers. Data processing. Going to conferences. I taught myself statistics.”

When the time came to defend his PhD in front of a panel of experts, Chingwaru didn’t contemplate being nervous. Not only had he been presenting “for years”, he says, but he realised that “I know my PhD better than anyone else… I can answer anything they throw at me.”

Where to now?:

With a PhD in his pocket, a flurry of media coverage—many Zimbabwean and South African news outlets seized on the $24 billion figure—and job offers in five countries, the world really does appear to be Chingwaru’s oyster. While Von der Heyden insists that “there is no wrong answer for someone of his caliber,” Chingwaru is weighing his career options carefully.

On one side of the scale is his desire to experience new countries and cultures. On the other hand, his ambition is to take his PhD research beyond the page and get involved in the extraction work itself. “On paper, it all seemed so simple,” he says. “When I was on the plants, I realised it was way more complicated than I thought… I’m always up for a challenge.”

Whatever shape his career takes, Chingwaru says he is passionate about using his skillset to help the mining industry embrace a more sustainable future. Reprocessing the Witwatersrand tailings, for example, could have significant health benefits for the people of Johannesburg, especially, Becker says, “if there is a viable business case to remove the gold, the sulphur associated with pyrite, and any remnant uranium”.

While he is focused on getting some real-world work experience, Chingwaru is equally adamant that he will sign up for a postdoc at some point in the future. “I am an academic at heart,” he says.

This will be music to Becker’s ears: “We need more fundamental research like this that not only characterises the material but also investigates techno-economical options for processing. We need lots of ideas to ultimately develop, in partnership with industry, viable solutions… The importance of university research cannot be underestimated.”

Shortly before going to print, Chingwaru informed Al Jazeera that he had accepted an offer from the Institute of Sustainable Minerals at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He took the job because it would allow him to combine working with industry—mainly extracting “battery metals” from tailings—with a postdoctoral research project.

He’s also “looking for adventure”.

Kenya tax plan will hurt business and dim economic recovery – Economists warn

Financial analysts are warning that the Kenya Finance Bill 2024 that was tabled before the National Assembly this week could impact economic recovery if implemented without amending a raft of tax proposals.

The bill introduces, among others, a motor vehicle tax, a minimum top-up tax, a significant economic presence tax, and amendments aimed at enhancing revenue collection and tax compliance.

Economists warn that global shocks such as the geopolitical tensions in Europe and the Middle East, coupled with domestic challenges such as high public debt, could complicate the country’s efforts to meet its financial target of Ksh3.9 trillion ($29.77 billion) for the financial year 2024/25.

“When the economy is depressed and it’s in recession, you don’t go on taxing people. You wait until the economy recovers, then you can start taxing,” said Billow Kerrow, a former senator for Mandera.

“You look for better ways of growing the economy. In fact, you give people incentives to go into business and production so that you can get more revenue and create employment. But when you start asking for money when the economy is down, businesses will move to another place.”

The bill proposes that items that had been zero-rated for VAT would be subject to VAT at the standard rate, currently 16 percent. One of those is bread, whose price would increase by at least Ksh10 ($0.076). Others are electric bikes and buses, and solar and lithium-ion batteries.

The incentives for the e-mobility sector were introduced in 2023 to promote green energy use, leading to increased uptake, with many start-ups setting up in Kenya.

But, in less than a year, even before the tax effect is felt, the Finance Bill 2024 has reversed those gains.

“I was hoping that all the things that were enacted in the Finance Act 2023 that have come to harm the economy and livelihood will be corrected in the 2024 Bill, but that is not the case,” said Diana Gichengo, Executive Director at the Institute for Social Accountability.

“Farmers, the government will be coming for you. Farmers are being targeted. Businesses in the digital market will be targeted. You who own cars and are online, the government will be coming for you again.”

There has been an increased use of the internet and social media to advertise alcoholic beverages, betting, gaming, lotteries, and prize competitions. The bill proposes an excise duty of 15 percent on fees charged for internet and social media advertisements relating to alcoholic beverages, betting, gaming, lotteries, and prize competitions.

The bill targets increasing excise duty from 15 percent to 20 percent on fees charged for money transfer services offered by banks, money transfer agencies, other financial service providers, and cellular phone service providers.

“At what cost? Most people who are trying to get employment—Uber drivers, digital creators—are not going to make it,” said Ms. Gichengo.

Economists warn that whereas the proposal is to introduce the tax via an amendment to the Income Tax Act, the motor vehicle tax itself falls short of what ideally makes it eligible for classification as an income tax.

The bill also proposes to subject to withholding tax all payments made to a resident person with respect to management or professional fees or with respect to a contractual fee without any regard to the gross amount payable.

Implying that all payments for management, professional, or contractual fees shall be subject to withholding tax.

However, this is likely to increase the compliance burden for taxpayers, especially those who make numerous small payments below the current threshold.

The bill proposes to exclude a number of products from excise duty where the products originate from East Africa Community Partner States that meet the East African Community Rules of Origin:

The products include imported cartons, boxes, and cases of corrugated paper or paper board; imported folding cartons, boxes, and cases of non-corrugated paper or paper board; imported skillets; and free-hinge lid packets.

Other products include imported eggs, onions, potatoes, potato crisps, and potato chips.

It also proposes to exclude imported cement clinkers from excise duty and introduce excise duty on all articles of plastic. Previously, only imported articles of plastic were subject to excise duty.

Amenhotep III: The true face of the grandfather of Tutankhamun unveiled for the first time

The true face of Amenhotep III, the pharaoh who ruled ancient Egypt at its zenith and was worshipped as a living god, has now been unveiled.

Known as the grandfather of Tutankhamun, Amenhotep III was described by one archaeologist as “one of the richest men that ever lived” and led Egypt through an era of unparalleled prosperity and global influence.

Despite being one of ancient Egypt’s greatest pharaohs with more surviving statues than any other, a scientific reconstruction of Amenhotep III’s face had never been done—until now.

Utilizing data from his mummy’s skull, a multinational team has unveiled his true likeness for the first time in nearly 3,400 years, according to Daily Mail.

Michael Habicht, an archaeologist at Flinders University in Australia, said he came across differently from the Egyptian ruler’s statues. He said: “It’s a placid face for a man who promoted peace and lived in a time of the greatest economic prosperity. He might well have been one of the richest men that ever lived, at least in his epoch.”

He continued: “It is difficult to know the cause of death by analyzing the available remains.

“Research carried out in the 1970s described Amenhotep III as an obese, sick, and sedentary man, who was almost bald, and suffered from dental problems in the last years of his life.”

“Although he was one of the truly great kings of Egypt, his body height is about 156cm, making him one of the smallest kings we know from their preserved mummies. This rather small body height is not reflected in art – in artworks he is famous for his gigantic statues.”

Brazilian graphics expert Cicero Moraes, who digitally reconstructed the face of Amenhotep III, said the process began with recreating the pharaoh’s skull using images and data from his mummy. He then incorporated additional data from living donors to accurately estimate the dimensions and positions of the king’s nose, ears, eyes, and lips.

Moraes said: “Based on historical knowledge, Amenhotep III had a robust appearance, which is why we used data from individuals with a high body mass index.”

He added: “If we are not mistaken, this is the first facial approximation of Amenhotep III. Compared to other approximations of pharaohs that I have participated in, this was the most complete too, as we modeled the clothes and accessories.

“We were amazed with the final result; seeing a complete bust with these colors and the facial serenity is quite satisfying. It is our gift to all those who appreciate history.”

Pharaoh Amenhotep III, worshipped as divine and claimed the god Amun as his true father, reigned with the name meaning “Amun is satisfied.” He died between the ages of 40 and 50, leaving behind a kingdom at the peak of its power and wealth.

Habicht said: “Diplomatic letters by foreign potentates begged him to send them some gold as a present, ‘as gold shall be abundant in Egypt as sand’.”

“It’s the usual over-exaggeration for such a letter, but nevertheless hints towards extreme wealth.”

He added: “There are speculations that the mummy of Amenhotep III may have been entirely covered with gold leaf so that he must have looked like a statue of a god.”

Habicht suggested that Pharaoh Amenhotep III may have also been a womanizer.

“He was apparently very interested in women; he imported hundreds of foreign harem ladies and collected them as other people collect postal stamps,” he said.
