LAWRENCE KATILUNGU : THE FORGOTTEN HERO

LAWRENCE KATILUNGU : THE FORGOTTEN HERO

In the heart of Zambia’s Copperbelt, where the earth yields its hidden treasures of Copper, stood a man whose legacy outshines the richest of ores. Lawrence Chola Katilungu, born to the rhythm of the miner’s pick and the distant echo of ancestral drums, emerged as a beacon of hope and courage for his people.

A Son of the Soil from the humble beginnings in the Northern Province, Katilungu’s journey was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Bemba tribe. His early years as a mission teacher sowed the seeds of enlightenment, but it was beneath the earth’s crust, in the veins of Nkana mine, where his true calling was unearthed.

The Union’s Heartbeat… As the African Mineworkers’ Union took its first breath, Katilungu’s voice echoed through the shafts and tunnels, uniting the miners in a chorus for change. His leadership was not merely a position but a pledge to every man who toiled in darkness for a glimmer of light.

Strikes and Solidarity in the year 1952 marked a milestone as Katilungu led a strike that rippled through the foundations of colonial rule. The miners’ hands, once raised in labor, now clenched in solidarity, won a wage increase that was more than a number. It was a symbol of their worth.

A Legacy Carved in Copper, Katilungu’s story is not etched in the transient ink of history books but carved in the copper that built Zambia as a Nation. His name adorns the halls of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, a reminder that from the depths of struggle can rise the heights of triumph.

The Torchbearer’s Twilight as the sun set on Katilungu’s life in November 1961, the flames of freedom he ignited burned ever brighter. He left behind a path illuminated by his resolve, a path that led his people from the shadows of oppression and later on to the dawn of independence.

In the annals of Zambia’s heritage, Lawrence Chola Katilungu remains a touchstone of resilience, a symbol of the fight for equality, and a portrait of unwavering dedication. His memory endures, inspiring new generations to carry the torch of justice and dignity, ensuring that the miner’s dream of yesterday becomes the nation’s reality of tomorrow.

DAD FELL AND BROKE HIS ARM, SON OF MURDERED BUSINESSMAN TELLS COURT

DAD FELL AND BROKE HIS ARM, SON OF MURDERED BUSINESSMAN TELLS COURT

SON of murdered businessman has disclosed that his father Alex Kanyama Zulu fell on the stairs and broke his arm following an attempt to hit his mother, Mildred Mwila Kasase with a trunk during a fight.

The child witness said his father was admitted to the Italian Hospital for surgery and he never returned home.

In this case Kasase an assistant director at the Ministry of finance is jointly charged with her 20-year old son Alex Madiba Zulu for murder.

It is alleged that the two killed Alex Kanyama Zulu on July 29, 2023.

The 18-year old gave his testimony before judge Irene Mbewe in the presence of his guardian and child welfare inspector from the Social Welfare, Nosiku Situmbeko.

In recollecting the events that led to his father sustaining a broken arm, the child said on the fateful day around midnight he was woken up by noise from his parents who had engaged in a fight.

“I went to check what was happening, then I saw my dad beating my mum. Then my dad started coming close to me I went back to the bedroom I and stayed there a bit,” the boy said.

He told the Court that his father had turned the house upside down and he peeped through the window, he saw him throwing house decor outside.

“After he threw things he went outside, we used to keep trunks next to the sitting room door. I saw him lift one of the trunks and threw it. As he did that he fell with the trunk. He was about to throw it to my mum. He fell on the pavers, as he rolled down the stairs,”the boy said.

“Then he (the deceased) started complaining that his arm was broken. He was complaining to me, my mum and my brother Madiba Zulu. Thereafter he opened the gate and drove off.”

He said his mum told him and Madiba to go back to bed and they were woken up when their father returned home.

“In the morning he (Alex Kanyama) asked me to find a taxi. I went to Chris mall and found a taxi then I went to pick him up to go to Itialian hospital. Before that we went to kamanga to see our mechanic and he told him to go get the car from Chelstone then we went to Italian hospital,” the boy said.

“I was at the reception he was inside and dont know what he was doing. I just know that he paid for surgery. I told mum and my brother that dad has been admitted and he is going for surgery. Madiba and mum came with a suitcase of clothes.”

The 18-year old claimed that his mother informed medical personnel that his father could not undergo surgery because he was drinking the previous night but he scolded her insisting that he needed to undergo surgery.

“Mum asked me and my brother to get food for him (from home). We were home waiting for mum to tell us to take food but she never called. Later William texted Madiba saying Condolences. William is my cousin,” said the boy.

Trial continues on May 21.

“I was tired of playing games” – Cassper Nyovest on why he got married

South African rapper Cassper Nyovest says he decided to get hitched because he was tired of going from woman to woman and sleeping around.

Nyovest got married to his childhood friend Pulane Mojaki in a traditional ceremony last month.

Speaking on L-tido’s podcast, Nyovest said he had found a different outlook on life after getting married.

“I’m stepping up to what a man’s supposed to do, responsibilities. I was saved and I was basically saved for five months. I hadn’t had sex since I got saved,” he said.

“I just wanted to be an honest man. I was tired of playing games. It was just time [for me] to grow up and be saved, I saw things from the right perspective, and for the first time in my life, I wanted to be married.

“It was not even about sex, I wanted to be an honest man and commit to this thing that I say I am. I am proudly married and I’m having the time of my life.”

When asked about his relationship with his baby’s mother Thobeka, Cassper said he respected her despite his infidelity in the past.

“We had been separated for almost two years reason being she left me because of my infidelity. We were co-parenting, that’s what we still trying to do.

“It’s not perfect but I’ll always have respect for Thobeka, she’s one of the most amazing human beings and the best mother I could ever pick to have my first born.”

Nyovest continued: “People will have their opinions, people will always try and create a narrative or try and create a platform to make this a soapie, but the thing is life is not perfect, people aren’t perfect, life is not perfect.

“I’m glad that me and her are maturing in our own spaces. She also got saved before me and I did too.”

Speaking more on co-parenting, the Tito Mboweni hit maker added, “We’re trying, it’s not perfect but we’re trying, and I’m trying as well. The most important thing is my son.

“I owe that guy the best version of myself. Not only as a father to him, but as an example of what a man should be, because it doesn’t matter what I tell him he’s going to do what I do, Nyovest added.

Ten Differences and Similarities Between Drake and Tupac

The Tupac Shakur estate has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Drake, demanding the removal of his Kendrick Lamar diss track, “Taylor Made Freestyle,” due to its alleged use of unauthorized AI-generated versions of Tupac’s and Snoop Dogg’s voices.

According to the letter penned by lawyer Howard King and obtained by World Music Views, the estate considers the utilization of AI Tupac’s voice as a blatant infringement on Tupac’s publicity rights and the estate’s legal rights. Stating,“The Estate is deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorized use of Tupac’s voice and personality. Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time.”

Additionally, the estate said they “would have never given its approval” to use an AI Tupac voice, and said if Drake did not take down “Taylor Made Freestyle” within 24 hours, it would take legal action.

King emphasized that the estate would never have consented to the use of AI Tupac’s voice and warned of legal action if Drake failed to remove the track within 24 hours.

Despite “Taylor Made Freestyle” being unofficially released solely on social media, King highlighted its substantial online presence, with over a million streams and coverage in national press and entertainment publications. He also criticized the song for misusing Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a friend of the estate who has consistently respected Tupac’s legacy.

The potential escalation of the cease-and-desist into a lawsuit could test the boundaries of AI and voice cloning legality. King’s letter touches on the copyright concerns surrounding AI, suggesting that Tupac’s intellectual property may have been used without proper authorization in the creation of the AI voice.

Moreover, King raised concerns about potential violations of publicity rights laws in California, arguing that the use of AI Tupac in “Taylor Made” could create a false impression of endorsement from the estate. He pointed out Drake’s own efforts to protect his likeness, including previous legal actions against unauthorized uses of his image and AI-generated impersonations

  10. Legacy: Tupac’s legacy is deeply entrenched in hip-hop culture, with his music and activism continuing to inspire generations of artists. Drake’s legacy is still evolving but is already significant, particularly in terms of commercial success and influence on modern rap music.

In an Instagram Live on Thursday, Banton joined Khaled in Miami, Florida.

“This is legendary! I haven’t seen my brother and I don’t think you have seen my brother and it’s been about 15 years since you have seen him in Miami or what we call the United States. And I just want to say yow Buju Banton welcome back to your second home,” the producer said.

Banton responded: “God is amazing my brother, I wanna say nuff love to all the people out there. This is Buju Banton, I want to say nuff love to you all, all my fans out there in all the states in the United States of America, Gargamel is back.”

Banton also shared a series of photos from a private jet and at Khaled’s home, writing in the caption: “Long was the road, Many were the travels, But the journey of a 1000 miles begin with a single step, Miami si mi ya.”

Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, was deported to Jamaica after his release on December 7, 2018, from McRae Correctional Institute in Georgia. He had served close to 10 years for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine.

Both Banton and Khaled are currently signed to Def Jam, and Khaled is also the Global Creative Consultant for the parent company Universal Music Group.

During an episode of Up Close & Personal for Grammy.com, Khaled explained that in the early years of his career, he would travel between Miami and Kingston to observe soundclash culture. Eventually, his determination and vigor pushed him to evolve from a teenage bedroom turntablist to a popular Miami radio DJ who dabbled in Rap and Dancehall mixes.

“I grew up listening to Dancehall, playing Dancehall music with Hip Hop. As a young kid, I used to be in Jamaica, I use to basically live in Miami and Jamaica. I sound clashed, I’ve deejayed in Kingston throughout the whole beginning of my career,” Khaled said.

According to Khaled, his popularity quickly grew thanks to a few exclusive dubplates from his Jamaican deejay friends. “I blew up, my name got big in Miami and the Caribbean because Khaled was known for playing Hip Hop and Reggae but also known for his special dub plates” he said.

“All those artistes you saw on my album on that song, my friends that cosigned me in the beginning of my career. They use to give me dubplates and they put their hands around my shoulder saying we love this kid and I never forget where I come from,” he said.

“Dancehall is a part of my story, you know what I’m saying, Jamaica is a part of Khaled’s story and it’s such a blessing… I love Reggae music and I love Dancehall.”

The producer, who is reportedly working on his 14th album, Til Next Time, has collaborated with Banton on three of his last projects.

On his 11th album, Father Of Asahd, Khaled featured Buju Banton on Holy Mountain, which also had guest verses from Sizzla, Mavado and 070 Shake, and on the final track, Holy Ground.

Khaled Khaled, his 12th studio album, included the track Where You Come From, which featured Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Barrington Levy.

His 13th album, God Did, included the track These Streets Know My Name, which featured Banton, Skillibeng, Capleton, Bounty Killer, and Sizzla.

I’M A VERY SAD ZAMBIAN TO SEE DEMOCRACY UNDER THREAT- Pastor Kennedy K. Mambwe

I’M A VERY SAD ZAMBIAN TO SEE DEMOCRACY UNDER THREAT

Firstly, I’m sad because in Zambia today, it’s very difficult to have open discourse, hold an opinion and express it without being scrutinized through political lenses. Contrary to the physical and ruthless street cadres under the previous regime, today’s cadres wear suits, make decisions in boardrooms and they hold positions of influence. In the UPND Government, we are experiencing caderism of self preservation, as long as it benefits the office holder, whether legally or morally wrong, they will do it indiscriminately.

If you want to discuss concerns in education, agriculture, the economy, governance or politics itself, you must be ready for ugly consequences. Today, citizens can’t express themselves freely without being labeled politically. The net effect is that people have opted to engage in whispered conversations, sharing and forwarding articles they come across in the digital spaces that resonates with their feelings on several issues.

Even though citizens may hold strong personal views about the state of governance, broken promises, high cost of living and a crippling economic malaise, they have generally resorted to this kind of “silent” behavior for fear of being isolated and targeted for victimization, segregation, demotion and or cyber bullying. Despite these real threats, citizens must be reminded and encouraged to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of expression and today, I take the liberty of my rights as a citizen to share my personal sentiments.

The high hopes that Zambians had in the current administration are diminishing fast as the first five-year term in office is fast approaching without a clear economic direction or turnaround plan. The much needed development to better the lives of citizens has become increasingly elusive under the UPND administration. While there has been much talk about CDF, debt restructuring, free education and the sale of mines, the impact of these actions is far from being realized or felt, definitely not before 2026.

It’s also true that the political rich elites are getting richer while the poor in our country are getting poorer while being used as door mats for the rich to step on, wipe their feet to enter into citizens’ sponsored opulence through voter patronage and manipulation. The cost of living is excruciatingly beyond the reach of 80 perfect of the citizens.

Going by the recent increase in fuel, electricity tariffs, inflation and an ever escalating cost of living, the economy is not showing any signs of rebounding in the short term, sparking fears of rising abject poverty levels and a widening gap between the rich and the poor.

It’s also disheartening to note that those in power, though they campaigned to fight and end nepotism, tribalism and regionalism, they are not making any deliberate effort to end the glaring evidence of the scourge, but are wantonly fueling what Zambians rejected in August 2021 through skewed appointments and an endemic and rampant tribal purging in the civil service.

If you ask most citizens why they are mute about these and many other issues frustrating them, they claim to fear a barrage of personal attacks from sponsored keyboard warriors using fictitious accounts and fake names in the digital spaces. These hired cyber bullies are hungry and unemployed innocent young people who are being abused by the powerful for self preservation purposes in exchange for bundles, talk time and table crumbs that are devoid of any youth empowerment.

In previous successive governments, civil society organisations took up vigilant positions to hold those in power accountable. Today, it’s sad to see advocacy groups infiltrated and their voices silenced complicitly as institutions of governance are being ripped apart callously without anyone to defend their existence and independence.

I’m a sad Zambian because democracy is evidently under threat when lines remain blurred between the executive, judiciary and the legislature in a society where some members of the fourth estate are compromised and timidly positioning themselves for business favours rather than serving national interest.

PF WINS CASE IN FUNDING OF ELECTIONS

PF WINS CASE IN FUNDING OF ELECTIONS

…funding of elections cannot be deemed to be money laundering and source of funding need not be disclosed…

In a major milestone court decision, the Court of Appeal has ruled that there is no law in Zambia that compels a political party to disclose source of funding for participating in national elections.

Further, court has determined that funding used in elections cannot be deemed to be money laundering.

The State proceeded to charge and arrest former Secretary General, Davies Mwila and Lawyer Ann Mwitwa on allegations that money used in elections by the Party were proceeds of crime and constituted a case of money laundering.

The State also seized motor vehicles and other party assets from the Patriotic Front and its affiliates alleging that the money used in acquiring these assets constituted proceeds of crime and money laundering.

The High Court dismissed the action when lawyers for the Patriotic Front raised the matter that there was no law that regulates or compels political parties to disclose source of funding in Zambia and that such funds could not be deemed to be proceeds of crime or money laundering.

Following this setback, the Patriotic Party appealed to the Appeals Court.

The Appeals Court has also stated that the High Court Judge misdirected himself when he dismissed the case on a preliminary issue without considering the main case or the law on the matter.

The Patriotic Front raised a statement of
claim, seeking the following reliefs from the Court:

  1. Damages harassing intimidating and members of the Patriotic Front Party;
  2. Damages for misrepresentation and defamation of character;
  3. Damages for discrimination,
  4. A declaratory Order declaring that the Appellant cannot be compelled to disclose its
    source of funds used in the 2021 General Elections;
  5. A declaration that funding of the 2021 General Elections is not money laundering;
  6. Any relief the court may deem fit; and costs
The Attorney General purported that the court action was an attempt to stop or stall criminal investigations against the Party and its officials.

The preliminary application before the learned Judge was at the instance of the Respondent dealing with the following question:

“Whether the plaintiffs action is an attempt to
circumvent the Drug Enforcement Commission’s statutory authority to conduct criminal investigations relating, inter alia, to allegations of money laundering against members of the public, through the use of civil proceedings.”

A panel of three judges; Hon. Justin Chashi, Hon. C.K Makingu and Hon. Dominic Sichinga ruled that;

“The issue, in our view, was not suitable for determination without the full trial of the action as provided under Order 14A. That notwithstanding, we hold the view that, after the learned Judge considered and determined the preliminary issue as having been improperly raised for citing an inappropriate Order to challenge the proceedings, it would have been judicious for the Judge to conclude at that juncture.”

“However, the learned Judge proceeded to examine the main action and dismiss it without giving the parties an opportunity to present their arguments on the issues.”

“We believe that grounds two and five will sufficiently enable us to attain the desired outcome that would have been achieved through the consideration of all grounds of
appeal.”

“The essence of these two grounds centers on
whether the learned Judge acted justifiably
in considering the main action while rendering a ruling on the preliminary application whether the learned Judge acted justifably
considering the main action while rendering a ruling on the preliminary application.”

HICHILEMA ALONE CANNOT DEVELOP ZAMBIA WE ALL HAVE A DUTY TOWARDS OUR NATION IN THIS ECONOMIC CRISIS- SIKAILE SIKAILE

HAKAINDE HICHILEMA ALONE CANNOT DEVELOP ZAMBIA WE ALL HAVE A DUTY TOWARDS OUR NATION IN THIS ECONOMIC CRISIS

There’s a prevailing sentiment that places the burden of Zambia’s development solely on Hakainde Hichilema’s shoulders. However, such a perspective oversimplifies the complexities of our nation’s economic woes. While it’s undeniable that we’re facing a significant cost-of-living crisis, attributing it solely to Hichilema’s tenure overlooks crucial factors, particularly the heavy borrowing by previous administrations.

By the time we went to the polls in 2021, Zambia was already defaulting on loans. Former President Lungu and key figures like Ng’andu Bwalya, Felix Mutati, and Miss Mwanakatwe, who served as finance ministers, hold insights into the accumulation of these debts. It’s imperative for current officials, like Mutati, now serving under the UPND government, to step forward and elucidate these challenges. Transparency is key, especially from individuals who’ve traversed various administrations.

Has Hichilema failed in addressing these challenges? It’s a resounding no. Resolving an economic crisis of this magnitude, intricately intertwined with international entities like the IMF and World Bank, demands meticulous effort. Negotiations are riddled with bureaucratic hurdles, requiring unwavering commitment. Hichilema’s administration has demonstrated earnest efforts toward debt restructuring, a commendable stride given the complexities involved.

However, the root causes of our economic woes extend beyond external factors. Internal issues, including inefficiencies within public institutions and a lackadaisical work culture, exacerbate our predicament. Civic leaders entrusted with unlocking economic opportunities often fall short, leaving vital funds underutilized. Blaming Hichilema for these shortcomings is misguided; it’s incumbent upon all stakeholders—ministers, MPs, PSs, ambassadors, and directors—to embrace a proactive mindset conducive to development.

The prevalence of incompetence within government institutions underscores the urgent need for reform. Instituting independent monitors to oversee operations could foster accountability and curb malpractices. A paradigm shift towards results-oriented practices is imperative to steer Zambia towards prosperity.

As ordinary citizens, our role in fostering development cannot be overstated. Embracing patriotism and resilience, even through simple acts like cultivating homegrown produce, can alleviate the economic strain. Let’s confront our internal challenges head-on, without seeking solace in comparisons with other nations.

My sincere plea to the UPND government; beyond streamlining bureaucracy, please overhaul the prevailing pathetic work culture hindering policy implementation. Every civil servant must commit to progress. Yet, poor work ethic persists, sabotaging vital projects and squandering public funds. Senior officials, neglecting duties, must be held accountable, Mr. President. Vigilance is vital—root out complacency and foster accountability. Failure perpetuates citizens’ suffering. Strong leadership is needed to eradicate this scourge and ensure judicious use of public resources, benefiting all Zambians. It’s urgent, sir, as concerned citizens’ reports fall on deaf ears, fueled by the security of monthly salaries by those occupying these offices. We have been reporting to some of them serious issues but they don’t care because they know that they are not the one going to be showered with the ridicule but you.

If everyone in public office worked as diligently as you, we’d be much further ahead. Unfortunately, many are liabilities. It’s time to address their incompetence, Mr. President, as it wrongly reflects on your leadership.

Renaming Western Province to Barotseland Province: A Step Towards Resolving the Barotseland Dispute

In addressing the ongoing Barotseland dispute in Zambia, proposing the renaming of Western Province to Barotseland Province emerges as a potential step towards reconciliation and fostering a sense of inclusivity and respect for the region’s historical and cultural significance. This initiative not only acknowledges the grievances of those advocating for greater autonomy but also reflects a commitment to honoring past agreements and promoting unity within the nation.

However, before separatist groups, such as Linyungandambo, pursue their aspirations for secession, it is imperative to address certain inconsistencies and challenges. One such challenge is the obligation of all Zambians to pay the TV levy, which supports essential services including healthcare, security, social services, and education. It is essential for all citizens, regardless of their affiliations or grievances, to contribute to the nation’s development and well-being. Therefore, I challenge Linyungandambo to lead by example and cease payment of the TV levy before advancing discussions on the Barotseland Agreement. It is hypocritical to advocate for a cause while benefiting from the services provided by the Zambian government.

Central to the proposed renaming is the recognition that we are one Zambia, one nation. The Litunga, revered as the king of the Lozi or Luyi people, symbolizes unity and represents all Zambians. The prospect of a divided nation, with Barotseland breaking away, raises significant concerns about the preservation of our shared heritage and identity. The cultural richness embodied in events like the Kuomboka transcends regional boundaries and unites us as a nation. Any attempt to sever ties would diminish the collective pride we share in such cultural celebrations.

For those unfamiliar with the context, Linyungandambo’s pursuit of independence stems from perceived grievances regarding the Barotseland Agreement of 1964. This agreement, intended to grant the region significant autonomy within Zambia, has been marred by allegations of non-compliance and neglect. Consequently, tensions have escalated, prompting calls for secession. However, it is essential to approach these grievances with a spirit of dialogue and compromise rather than resorting to drastic measures that threaten the nation’s unity and stability.

Amidst the discord, we must prioritize the cultivation of unity and understanding. I challenge Linyungandambo to demonstrate their commitment to their cause by refraining from utilizing government-provided services, including healthcare facilities, during times of need. This gesture would underscore their sincerity and dedication to their ideals. As advocates for change, it is incumbent upon them to lead by example and pursue constructive avenues for dialogue and resolution.

All in all, renaming Western Province to Barotseland Province represents a symbolic gesture of reconciliation and acknowledgment of the region’s unique heritage. However, true progress can only be achieved through genuine dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to upholding the principles of unity and inclusivity. Let us embrace our shared identity as Zambians and work together towards a brighter and more harmonious future for all.

RECENT BY-ELECTIONS, A SHAM – Socialist Party

RECENT BY-ELECTIONS, A SHAM – SP

Lusaka, Saturday (May 4, 2024)
MEDIA STATEMENT

Socialist Party (SP) Director Media, Brian Hapunda, has described the just ended by-elections, all scooped by the UPND, as a sham.

Mr. Hapunda observed that the elections were marred by violence, vote buying and intimidation by the ruling party.

He disclosed that SP participated in seven of the nine by-elections that saw Cabinet Ministers and District Commissioners deployed to man the wards.

The SP Director Media added that the SP could not participate in the Gwembe and Kabompo By-elections because their candidates were kidnapped on the day of filing in nominations.

Mr. Hapunda further revealed that an SP Candidate was kidnapped on the day of filing in nominations in Luangwa District but that residents fought running battles with the UPND thereby managing to rescue her.

He, therefore, thanked people in the areas where the by-elections took place for the support rendered to the SP.

“We thank the people who stood with us during the moments of difficulty as their support shows that SP and it’s President, Dr. Fred M’membe, have been accepted because they are on the ground campaigning. Even though we did not win, people placed us at a good number two showing that SP is the second strongest party on the ground in Zambia as things stand today. We are a party that is providing an alternative Government to the UPND as a Government in waiting. We want to remind the UPND that they can only do so much imingalato in the by-elections because the whole Government machinery moves into the by-elections to help the ruling party win but the ball game is different when it comes to the General Election because each candidate will be on their own campaigning. Come 2026, it will be difficult for UPND to win seats because candidates will be on their own,” he said.

Mr. Hapunda was of the view that the UPND should have allowed all opposition political parties to participate and campaign freely for them to gauge their popularity correctly.

“The SP and Dr. M’membe have given the UPND a run for their money in the by-elections that they keep inducing in the Country. SP will continue participating in the induced by-elections because we believe that it is our right to do so regardless of the intimidation that we go through in the field,” he said.

The SP Director Media vowed that his party will democratically remove the UPND from office in 2026 with the support of the people of Zambia.

Gangs in Haiti commit further crimes days after appointment of new prime minister

Gangs in Haiti attacked some areas in Port-au-Prince, burning houses and shooting at the police for hours. Many people ran away from the violence on Thursday. This was one of the largest attacks since Haiti’s new prime minister was announced.

The attacks started on Wednesday night in areas like Solino and Delmas 18, 20, and 24, which are near the airport. The airport has been closed for almost two months because of a lot of gang violence.

“A man named Nene said the gangs were burning everything they could see, but he didn’t want to give his full name because he was afraid. ” “I stayed in a corner all night so no one could see me. ”

He walked with a friend and they carried a dusty red suitcase that was full of clothes – it was the only thing they could keep. Nene hurriedly took his children’s clothes and rushed them out of Delmas 18 at dawn when the fighting stopped for a while.

The streets that used to be busy with cars and people were empty and quiet in the morning, except for the sound of a goat.

A strong police truck drove around on the streets, passing burned cars and walls made of cinderblocks. On one wall, someone had written “Viv Babecue,” which is a message in Haitian Creole about a famous gang leader in Haiti.

People whose houses were not damaged in the attack in Delmas 18 and nearby areas carried fans, stoves, mattresses, and bags of clothes as they ran away on foot, motorcycles, or colorful small buses called tap-taps. Some people were walking with nothing because they had lost everything.

“Paul Pierre, who was 47 years old, said there were lots of gunshots all around while he was walking with his partner. They were looking for a place to stay after their house got burned down. ” They couldn’t keep any of their things.

He said that during the night, fighting caused children to be separated from their parents and wives from their husbands as people ran away in fear. He said, “Everyone is just trying to save themselves. ”

Martineda, a woman who did not want to give her last name because she was scared, said she became homeless when armed men set her home on fire. She ran away with her four-year-old because they both tried to escape when they heard the gunshots on Wednesday night.

“I said to him, ‘Don’t be afraid. “This is how people live in Haiti,” she said as she carried a heavy load of items on her head, like butter that she wanted to sell to make money and find a new place to live.

“Last night was scary. There was gunfire all night long and no one could sleep. ” Everyone was moving quickly on their feet.

The attack happened in an area controlled by Jimmy Cherizier, a former police officer called Barbecue, who leads a powerful gang group named G9 Family and Allies.

He and other leaders of gangs have been accused of working together to carry out attacks in the capital, Port-au-Prince, starting on Feb 29. Criminals set fire to police stations, shot at the main airport, and broke into Haiti’s two largest prisons, letting more than 4,000 prisoners escape.

The attacks made Prime Minister Ariel Henry step down. A new group of leaders chose a new prime minister, Fritz Belizaire, who used to be a sports minister. The decision is causing a lot of arguments among the nine council members who just started their job last week.

New leaders are now running the country. But there are arguments going on. People in Haiti want the new leaders to make sure they are safe. Gangs are still stronger and have better weapons than the police in Haiti.

The UN says that more than 2,500 people were hurt or killed from January to March this year, which is over 50% more than last year.

In the last month, over 90,000 people have left Port-au-Prince because gangs that control 80% of the city are now targeting areas that used to be safe.

Ernest Aubrey remembered when he came to Delmas 18 ten years ago. Now, he is moving out of his house for the first time.

“It’s a lot. ” “We can’t fight them anymore,” he said about the gangs. “They are taking all our stuff. ”

He saw a friend in a car and ran to ask for a ride because he had a heavy bag.

Vanessa Vieux was one of the few who chose to stay in Delmas 18. She sent her elderly mom to the countryside after the attack on Wednesday. She decided not to give up her home to gangs. Additionally, she believes in Haiti’s police force.

“I live beside a police officer,” she said. “That’s why I’m not afraid. ” or “That’s why I’m not worried. “

Everything is possible but the agreement stands -Tuchel on Bayern exit

Thomas Tuchel hinted at the prospect of extending his tenure as Bayern Munich head coach on Friday, stating that while he had agreed to depart the club at the season’s end, “anything is conceivable.”

Bayern confirmed in February that the 50-year-old would be stepping down from his position at the conclusion of the season.

Despite a challenging domestic campaign that sees them trailing Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen by 12 points, their impressive Champions League run, culminating in a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the semi-final first leg on Tuesday, has sparked discussions about Tuchel’s potential continuation as manager.

Addressing the speculation about his future, Tuchel remarked during a press conference: “This is a contractual agreement, so it appears unalterable.”

“Well, you can change every contract on mutual consent because we had a contract as well and we agreed on ending it early so everything is possible. But the answer is the same, the agreement stands and the agreement exists.”

A source close to ESPN has revealed that should Tuchel follow through with his planned departure from Bayern this summer, he harbors a preference for a return to the Premier League. He would be receptive to discussions with Manchester United in the event of a managerial vacancy.

Current United manager Erik ten Hag faces mounting pressure at Old Trafford following a disappointing second season, exacerbated by the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Meanwhile, Bayern has encountered challenges in securing Tuchel’s successor. Ralf Rangnick recently announced his decision to remain in his role as head coach of the Austria national team, declining the opportunity to manage Bayern.

Leverkusen manager and former Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso, previously linked to the managerial position, has declared his commitment to staying at his current club.

Furthermore, Julian Nagelsmann, Tuchel’s predecessor at Bayern, has rejected a return to the club and opted to extend his tenure as Germany head coach beyond the upcoming European Championship.

Amidst these developments, Bayern is set to face Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday before their pivotal Champions League semifinal second leg clash against Madrid on Wednesday.

1000 MW solar power deal with Canadian firm to have no effect on loadshedding this year – ZESCO

1000 MW solar power deal with Canadian firm to have no effect on loadshedding this year – ZESCO

The state owned power utility Company ZESCO says the signed 1000-megawatt Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with United Arab Emirates-owned SkyPower Global, will have no immediete impact on load shedding as the project is expected to be completed in the next 6 years.

SkyPower Global, an independent power producer headquartered in Canada, entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Zambia’s state-owned utility ZESCO Ltd to supply 1,000 MW of solar energy to Zambia.

Responding to the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, on whether the deal is likely to have any significant impact on the current load shedding, ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi said, the deal has no bearing for this year’s medium term plan.

Maumbi said, “Because construction has not even started, we have just signed a deal on agreement for us to be buying power from them.”

“The project is staggered into 200 megawatts upto 72 months so in terms of load shedding for this year it has no bearing at all but to the future it will have much bearing because then will be adding to the national grid.” he said.

Following the agreement between ZESCO and Sky Power global of UAE, many anticipated that the deal would reduce the load shedding hours.

ZESCO Spokesperson Maumbi has clarified that the 1000 mega watts solar power deal will not yield immediate results because there are modalities such as the setting up of the plant which must be effected in about a year.

He said the project is expected to take up about 72 months and will be divided into phases of 200 mega watts, which will add immense contribution to the national grid.

“The project has no immediate bearing on the current Loadshedding because it is a long term plan, we are just on the agreement phase, from then Power Global is expected to set up their facility which will take closer to a year because the project is in 6 years which is 72 months,” he said.

Maumbi said the agreement is a guarantee that ZESCO will purchase power from Sky Global however the duration in the aspect of benefits depends on company to intensify facility and logistical modalities.

He said the development is in line with the Country’s need to have more alternative sources of energy supplying to the grid in the long run and settle the power deficit.- Zambian Business Times

Kim Jong Un takes time each year to select 25 virgin girls to entertain him personally in a disturbing ‘pleasure squad’

A North Korean defector has claimed that Kim Jong Un takes time each year to select 25 virgin girls to entertain him personally in a disturbing ‘pleasure squad.’

According to The Star, Yeonmi Park, 30, alleged that officials ‘visit every classroom and even go to school-yards in case they missed someone that was pretty’ in their horrifying searches for young women.

After undergoing medical examinations to check they are still virgins, the women then ‘have to learn how to please these men—that’s their only goal,’ she said.

According to the outspoken YouTuber, Kim’s officials select women based on social status and attractiveness, reserving those deemed the most attractive for the despot himself, with ‘less stunning members… ordered to cater to the needs of lower-ranking generals and politicians’.

With rare insight, she claimed the ‘Pleasure Squad’ is broken into three divisions: one specialising in giving massages, another in entertaining through song and dance, and a third prepared to be ‘sexually intimate with the dictator, and other men’.

Ms Park fled the regime as a teenager and was allegedly human trafficked in China before ‘escaping hell’ to reach America, where she has found success through her memoir and podcast appearances, often comparing life in the ‘Hermit Kingdom’ to the US.

Ms. Park claims she was fortunate to avoid selection for Kim’s harem due to her ‘family status’, suggesting ‘they eliminate any girls with family members that have escaped from North Korea or have relatives in South Korea or other countries’.

But she said for many, life in North Korea is so dire that parents will happily allow their daughters to be recruited in the hope they might enjoy a better quality of life.

The defector, who has amassed more than one million subscribers on YouTube with her tales of life inside the dictatorship, claimed that the luxury lifestyle is often short-lived, with women cast out when they reach their mid-twenties.

Some will be married off to Kim’s personal bodyguards, she claimed, adding that ‘there are rumours’ that the leader’s ‘wife was originally in the Pleasure Squad’.

Ms Park claimed the system had evolved as a family tradition, with the incumbent leader preferring more ‘slender’, taller and ‘western-looking’ women while his father, Kim Jong-Il had a penchant for round-faced women who would not dwarf him, standing at just 5ft 2″.

Kim Il-Sung, father to Jong-Il, ‘had a more traditional taste in women’, meanwhile, with his own group called the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, Ms. Park said.

In 2010, one defector told Marie Claire magazine that she was just 15 when two men in uniforms took her from her classroom at school without warning.

Mi-Hyang claimed they made a record of her background, in line with Ms Park’s account, and asked her if she had had sex before.

After passing their tests, she said she was expected to spend a decade with Kim Jong-Il as part of his Kippumjo, or Pleasure Squad.

She claimed she was not allowed to speak to her family during that time and knew that she would be executed if she tried to escape.

Mi-Hyang maintained that Kim Jong-Il never made sexual advances on her as a teenager, but would hold her hand.

She was convinced had she stayed in the role through to adulthood, he would have.

nurse who administered lethal or potentially lethal doses of insulin to numerous patients has pleaded guilty to three counts of murder.

A Pennsylvania nurse who administered lethal or potentially lethal doses of insulin to numerous patients has pleaded guilty to three counts of murder.

Heather Pressdee, 41, was given three consecutive life sentences and another consecutive term of 380-760 years behind bars during a hearing in Butler, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

When one of her lawyers asked her why she was pleading guilty, Pressdee replied, ‘Because I am guilty.’

She played a role in the deaths of at least 17 patients who lived in five health facilities in four counties between 2020 and 2023, prosecutors said.

The 22 overall victims ranged in age from 43 to 104. Coworkers often questioned Pressdee’s conduct and said she frequently showed disdain for her patients and made derogatory comments about them, authorities said.

Family members were quick to blast the sick ‘Angel of Death’ as she listened to them testify at her Thursday sentencing. One said: ‘She is not sick. She is not insane. She is evil personified. … ‘I looked into the face of Satan myself the morning she killed my father.’

Pressdee, who could have faced a death sentence, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and 19 counts of attempted murder.

She initially was charged in May 2023 with killing two nursing home patients and injuring a third.

Further investigation led to dozens of more charges against her. During a February hearing, she argued with her attorneys and indicated that she wanted to plead guilty.

Pressdee said little as she entered her pleas inside a Pennsylvania courthouse, responding to most questions with a single word.

The plea hearing was expected to last through Friday because several people wanted to give victim impact statements, officials said.

Some who spoke in court Thursday told Pressdee that she had wrongly tried to play God, noting that although some of her victims were elderly or very ill, none were ready to die.

Pressdee didn’t look at the speakers or react to their comments, even when one shouted an expletive at her that led the courtroom gallery to break out in applause, according to news reports.

Prosecutors alleged Pressdee, of Harrison, gave excessive amounts of insulin to 22 patients, including some who weren’t diabetic.

Two patients died at the Quality of Life Services facility located in Chicora, Pennsylvania, where Pressdee worked, prosecutors said.

She typically administered the insulin during overnight shifts, when staffing was low and the emergencies wouldn’t prompt immediate hospitalization. Most of the patients died soon after receiving the insulin dose, or some time later.

Her nursing license was suspended early last year, not long after the initial charges were filed.

According to court documents, Pressdee sent her mother texts between April 2022 and May 2023 in which she discussed her unhappiness with various patients and colleagues, and spoke about potentially harming them.

She also voiced similar complaints about people she encountered at restaurants and other places.

Pressdee had a history of being ‘disciplined for abusive behaviour towards patients and/or staff at each facility resulting in her resigning or being terminated,’ prosecutors said in court documents.

Beginning in 2018, Pressdee held a number of jobs at western Pennsylvania nursing homes and facilities for short periods, according to the documents.

She was charged with the murders of Irene Simons, 78, and Sandra Lincoln, 82, who died following unnecessary doses of insulin last year.

Trans patients are now getting a new surgery to give them a combined p3n!s and v@g!na

Trans patients are now getting a new surgery to give them a combined penis and vagina. known as phalgina.

Phalgina surgeries, a term made of the words phallus and vagina, are offered by multiple clinics in the US for non-binary patients. Britons also claim to have been in discussions with UK surgeons about undergoing the procedure, although none are known to have actually had it.

Usually, trans men and women wanting affirming surgery are given the option of an operation to alter or remove their original genitals and have new ones crafted. But the phalgina does away with this “binary” option, and instead gives patients the chance to have both their original sex organ and the opposite sex organ.

Advocates say such procedures, which usually cost at least £10,000, help people with “unique” non-binary gender identities finally get the body they want, improving their mental health.

Non-binary people getting “phalgina” surgery to give them both male and female sex organs

Giving a man a vagina while preserving their penis is medically known as a PPV, or “penile preservation vaginoplasty”.

A traditional vaginoplasty for males uses tissue from the penis or scrotum to create the neo-vagina. But some patients who want the penis material preserved opt for an alternative technique that typically involves carving a vagina out of the tissue in the scrotum or perineum, the space between the anus and the genitals.

The opposite procedure, where a female is given an artificial penis while preserving their vagina, is called a vaginal preserving phalloplasty, or VPP. Much like a PPV, a patient gets to keep their original genitals but have an added set to match their gender identity.

Typical phalloplasties use tissue harvested from other parts of the body, usually the arm or thigh, to craft the new organ. This process remains the same in VPP but without the removal of the vagina, uterus and ovaries.

VPPs come with a few options such as potentially altering the body’s urethra so the trans man can urinate from their new penis and the creation of an artificial scrotum.

Penis size can also be customised to patient preference, to some degree. However, the length and girth can be limited by the amount of tissue safely able to be harvested from the patient’s body. The penis can also be made to be erogenous by connecting to the nerves found in the clitoris. Ejaculation is not possible, though.

woman was left shocked when she turned up to a hospital scan only to be told by staff that her records showed that she was already ‘’dead’

A woman was left shocked when she turned up to a hospital scan only to be told by staff that her records showed that she was already ‘’dead.”

Susan Johnson from Scarborough was left ‘shaking by a leaf’ after staff at the Bridlington Hospital in Yorkshire told her their records showed she’d been dead for four months.

The incident left Susan, 62, a retired housekeeper, baffled that her husband Bob needed to bring her a strong coffee to help calm her nerves.

The mother-of-two told BBC News: ‘I gave them my letter and their first words were, “ooh you’re dead”.

‘I said, “pardon?”. I was in shock.

‘Then they put something on the computer so I could have the scan and then they just said, “bye” and that’s it.’

It is unclear how the mistake happened as when Susan contacted her GP, they told her that the mistake had been fixed.

However, when she contacted the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the call handler told her she was still marked as already dead on the system.

‘On the computer you’re dead,’ she was told. Susan then informed her she couldn’t be dead as she was on the phone and talking.

The error meant that Susan’s carer’s allowance for looking after her disabled husband Bob briefly stopped, though this has now been fixed.

She said she shut down completely after the news and said there was nobody to talk to about the mistake.

Scarborough Medical Group told the BBC they’d received an electronic instruction about the ‘death’ from Primary Care Support England (PCSE).

Susan is concentrating on her hobbies of gardening and knitting as she recovers from the shock.

An NHS spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of an issue involving a civil death registration being incorrectly recorded against a patient’s medical record.

‘This was removed within 24 hours of it being reported to us in March 2023 and the patient was re-registered by their GP.

‘We would encourage the patient to contact us directly so we can explain further.’

Marco Reus to leave Borussia Dortmund at end of season

Borussia Dortmund veteran footballer and captain, Marco Reus will leave after 12 years as an adult and 9 years as a junior player with the side at the end of the season, the club announced on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Both parties agreed Reus’ contract would not be extended, although the 34-year-old wants to keep playing and will not retire. In total, Reus has spent 21 years with Dortmund and was captain of the club from 2018 to 2023.

The two-time Germany player of the year was among the best-attacking talents of his generation, but injury robbed him of a chance at World Cup glory in 2014.

He played 48 games for Germany, scoring 15 goals.

“I’ve dedicated half my life to this club, experienced a lot of ups and downs, but more ups I think,” the Dortmund-born Reus said in a video message.

“The club and I came to the decision not to extend the contract. It made me incredibly proud, I’m incredibly grateful to have played for this club for so many years.”

Reus, who came through Dortmund’s junior system before returning to the club after breaking through at neighbouring Borussia Moenchengladbach, won two German Cups with the side but never lifted the Bundesliga title.

The striker came closest last season, where Dortmund were atop the table heading into the final day but a 2-2 home draw against Mainz saw the title go to Bayern Munich for the 11th straight time.

While Bayer Leverkusen’s breakthrough Bundesliga title means Reus will not lift the shield with the club, Dortmund are two games away from winning the Champions League.

Reus came off the bench in a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s first semi-final at home, with the return leg taking place next Tuesday.

A win or a draw in Paris will see the side through to the final at Wembley, where Reus played in Dortmund’s previous final, a 2-1 loss in 2013 to rivals Bayern.

“We want to go to Wembley, we want to bring the trophy to Dortmund.

“That’s why it’s simply important that the decision has been made and that the issue is then over. And that we all concentrate on this big goal.”

Reus reportedly turned down a number of offers from larger clubs in order to stay at Dortmund.

In a statement issued by the club calling the news “the end of an extraordinary era,” BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Reus as “one of the club’s greatest players” and wished him “all the best for his future.

“We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his professional career because there are plenty of exciting tasks waiting for him here in Dortmund.”

Whistleblower who exposed Boeing’s aircraft faults dies suddenly from mysterious severe infection

A Boeing airlines whistleblower who raised concerns about one of the aircraft carrier’s suppliers ignoring production defects died suddenly on Tuesday, April 30 — just two months after another employee who sounded the alarm about the company died by alleged suicide.

Joshua Dean, 45, a former quality auditor at Spirit AeroSystems, died Tuesday morning from a mystery infection, the Seattle Times reported.

Dean, from Wichita, (pictured above) had reportedly been in good health until about two weeks ago, when he was admitted to the hospital, the outlet reported.

However, by April 21 he was in “very critical condition,” and had tested positive for influenza B, MRSA, and pneumonia, the outlet said.

He was intubated and put on dialysis before eventually being airlifted to another hospital in Oklahoma City.

A CT scan indicated that he had also suffered a stroke.

Shortly before his death, doctors were considering amputating his hands and feet, which had turned black from infection to the shock of his family and doctors.

“He is in the worst condition I have ever known or heard of. Even the hospital agrees,” his sister-in-law, Kristen Dean, wrote on Facebook Saturday, before detailing the life-saving procedures doctors were trying to save him.

His family then announced that he died Tuesday morning.

Dean had raised the alarm about defects while working at Spirit Aerosystems, a Kansas-based company which manufactures aircraft parts for Boeing in 2022. Less than a year later he was fired.

“I think they were sending out a message to anybody else,” Dean later told NPR of his firing. “If you are too loud, we will silence you.”

Dean, who had been at Spirit since 2019 as a quality auditor, raised concerns about improperly drilled bulkhead holes on parts for Boeing 373 Max planes, according to the Seattle Times. He claimed flagging the issue with his management had no effect on the company’s plans or production and nothing changed.

He has said his focus on the improperly drilled parts caused him to miss another issue with fittings between the vertical tail fin to the fuselage of the aircraft, which was later discovered and led to his being fired.

The issues with the improper drilling were later acknowledged by Spirit Aerosystems. Both issues caused delays at Boeing manufacturing plants.

Dean who provided testimony he and other workers were told to downplay any problems they identified, filed a complaint with the Federal Aviation Administration which claimed he was scapegoated in Spirit’s effort to keep the Boeing production issues secret.

In November 2023, he also filed a complaint with the Department of Labor on the grounds of wrongful termination.

That case was still pending at the time of his death, the outlet said.

Dean’s death comes less than two months after Boeing whistleblower John Barnett died from an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound in March.

His death is still under investigation by the local police after Barnett’s lawyers raised the alarm, saying “we didn’t see any indication he would take his own life … no one can believe it,” and urging a thorough investigation.

The same lawyer, Brian Knowles, was also representing Dean.

He told TIME: “Josh’s passing is a loss to the aviation community and the flying public.

“He possessed tremendous courage to stand up for what he felt was true and right and raised quality and safety issues,” Knowles added.

When asked if he agreed with the growing theories linking his clients’ back-to-back deaths, Knowles said he “would like to see the evidence from the investigating authorities.”

“What society does not need is people in fear to speak up,” he noted.

Museveni claims IMF, World Bank and Western countries purposely keep African countries in perpetual poverty

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has claimed that the West and various international monetary lenders keep Africa in continuous poverty.

Speaking at the World Bank’s International Development Association summit for African Heads of state, held in Nairobi, Kenya, Museveni took a bold swipe at world leaders saying that most of Africa’s problems predicted over 60 years ago were a result of philosophical, ideological, and strategic economic mistakes.

He claimed that a fundamental African problem is that aid from the World Bank and other Western bodies was majorly for profiteering.

“The crisis which is in Africa today is because of philosophical, ideological, and strategic economic mistakes which we have been talking about since the 1960s. It is not an accident when you see the crisis in many African countries, the collapse of States. We predicted this in the 1960s – philosophical, ideological, and strategic mistakes. I don’t have time to amplify each one but I was very happy to hear the president of the World Bank talking about prosperity instead of profiteering.

“Aid has been for profiteering, this has been the problem. Now, the World Bank people and other groups have been talking about sustainable development. Even in your documents, I have seen those words there, sustainable development”, Museveni stated.

He argued that what Africa needed to thrive as a continent was not a sustainable development as suggested by the World Bank, or other world lenders but social and economic transformation.

He urged the World Bank and world leaders to quit pushing sustainable development as a key factor in achieving a developed African continent.

“I would ask you to change those words in your documents. Africa does not need what you could call sustainable development. Africa needs social and economic transformation. The main reason why there’s no growth is because the growth factors are not funded, they are not even understood. What are the growth factors, we now talk of private sector growth. Yes, but for the private sector to grow what does it need? It needs a low cost of production”, he said.

According to him, adequate funding for the transportation, power and agricultural sectors will boost low production costs.

“Ministers of finance, what are the low costs of production? Number one is transport. You must have low transport costs. Where do low transport costs come from? The railway? If you don’t fund the railway how will you get low transport costs?

“Wonderful people, IMF, where will low-cost operations come from if you don’t have a railway? If you don’t fund the railway, how would you get low transport costs? I have been here for the last 64 years, I have been watching as a student leader, as a freedom fighter and now as the leader of a country. How many railways have been constructed or funded in Africa? The few that have been was by China, the Tanzanian railway to Zambia, and recently, another one here in Kenya. Tanzania on their own is building a railway line. So if you’re talking of developing Africa, fund the railway. If you fund the railway, you will have a low cost of transport and you can produce cheap products which can be bought all over the world.

“The second cost pusher is electricity. If you don’t fund electricity and you talk about sustainable development, what are you then talking about? We must have low-cost electricity not exceeding 5 cents per kilowatts, per hour. That is what I insist on in Uganda. I am tired of all these stories, I have put my foot down saying I don’t want to hear those stories. Uganda is a developing country and it will continue to develop because I don’t entertain nonsense anymore.”

Speaking further, Museveni who has ruled Uganda for over 40 years accused the World Bank and Western leaders of refusing to lend him money for capital projects such as establishing the Uganda Development Bank.

He lamented the rate at which loans are promptly approved for ‘’frivolities” but not for serious projects that would yield economic gains.

“Borrowing, for what? Capacity building! Imagine! They call you to a hotel where you eat Chapati and mandazi, and they say that is capacity building. Capacity building should be on the ground and not just in seminars. So, the second point your Excellencies is electricity. The third one; is for those people who talk about private sector growth, I have been trying to borrow money for our Uganda Development Bank, a bank which funds manufacturers, but no, I don’t get support for that.” he said

“They say they want my people to go to commercial banks. Those commercial banks are to encourage import because the only person who can borrow money from a commercial bank and pay it back is a trader who goes to China, Dubai buys goods, sells them quickly and pays the loan back. So, if you are serious, I need it here, about the low-cost funding for manufacturing, not stories.”

“How about funding for irrigation? Because if you want to stabilise agriculture, a country like Uganda is very rich, we have got everything. But sometimes, we have some erraticness because of the rains. So, to stabilise irrigation I’ve been trying to look for a loan for irrigation but I can’t easily get it, it is very difficult to get. But a loan for seminars is very quick.”

EU gives Lebanon 1billion euros in aid amid surge in unlawful immigration

The European Union said on Thursday that they will give 1 billion euros (about US$1. 06 billion) to Lebanon. Some of the money will be used to strengthen border control to stop people from Lebanon coming to Cyprus and Italy.

The agreement is like other EU aid deals for countries like Egypt, Tunisia, and Mauritania to make their borders stronger. This is happening as more people in Lebanon are not being nice to Syrian refugees, and there are a lot more Syrian refugees leaving Lebanon and going to Cyprus without following the rules.

Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Union, said in Beirut with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides that the help will begin this year and continue until 2027.

The majority of the help, which is 736 million euros, will help Syrian refugees and other vulnerable people in Lebanon. Another 200 million euros will go to support Lebanese security services in controlling the borders and migration. These numbers were given by the Cypriot government.

Some money would be given to fishermen in Lebanon so they don’t sell their boats to smugglers.

Von der Leyen said the EU will also work on a “better plan to help Syrian refugees go back home” in cooperation with the UN refugee agency. The group will keep providing legal ways for refugees to settle in Europe, she said.

Lebanon’s temporary Prime Minister Najib Mikati liked the plan and said that if Lebanon is safe, then Europe is safe too. He also said that if the problem gets worse, it won’t just affect Lebanon, but it will also affect Europe.

Lebanon has been having a really bad financial crisis since 2019. There are almost 780,000 Syrian refugees who are officially registered in Lebanon, and many more who are not officially registered. Lebanon has the most refugees per person in the world.

Lebanese leaders have been asking other countries for a long time to help the refugees either move to a new country or go back to Syria, even if they don’t want to. Lebanon’s security forces have increased sending Syrians back to their country in the last year.

More problems started after a leader of the Lebanese Forces party, Pascal Suleiman, was killed last month in what military officials said was a failed car robbery by a group from Syria. The event caused some people to attack Syrians.

At the same time, officials in Cyprus say too many Syrian people are coming to their country without permission, especially by boat from Lebanon.

The UNHCR in Lebanon said that they confirmed 59 boats leaving with 3,191 passengers between January and mid-April, compared to only 3 boats with 54 passengers last year. Normally, only a small number of boats try to cross the much more dangerous water in the winter. In 2023, UNHCR saw 65 boats leave with 3,927 people on board.

Cyprus has a new plan to stop the arrival of migrants. Last month, Cyprus stopped accepting Syrian asylum requests. Human rights groups say the Cypriot coast guard sent back five boats with around 500 asylum seekers from Lebanon. Cypriot officials said that it is not true.

Bassel al-Shayoukh, a Syrian refugee from Idlib, has been living in Lebanon since 2014. He said his brother and some relatives were on a boat that was sent back. Now he wants to go on the journey by himself.

“At first, I thought the war in Syria would end in a year or two,” he said. But it continued for a long time. In Lebanon, the same thing happened every year. Things started to get even more bad.

Shayoukh said he is worried about getting hurt by people who are trying to enforce the law or being sent back to Syria after Lebanese authorities refused to extend his permit to stay in the country.

His 17-year-old nephew, who didn’t want to say his name because he was afraid for his safety, said the Cypriot coast guard started moving their boat away by making waves. “I was really scared. ” “I can’t swim,” he said. “I believed we were going to be killed. ”

The people on the boats didn’t have any food or water for three days. Then they went back to Lebanon. The teen said that.

In Lebanon, the army arrested them; the ones with UNHCR were let go and the rest were sent out of the country.

Mohammed Sablouh, a lawyer in Lebanon who helps refugees and migrants, says the Lebanese government is ignoring the increase in migration on purpose to put pressure on the rest of the world.

The Lebanese army didn’t answer when asked about what they’re doing to stop smuggling.

On Thursday, they announced aid before the yearly fundraising conference for the Syrian crisis in Brussels at the end of the month. After 13 years of fighting, people are tired of donating money while everyone is focused on helping people affected by wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The president of Cyprus said that Thursday was a very important day. He asked European officials to make some areas in Syria safe for people to go back to.

The situation in Lebanon cannot continue like this. It’s not good for Cyprus, and it’s not good for the European Union, Christodoulides said.

However, some Lebanese officials don’t think that the European aid will fix the problem.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea told The Associated Press this week that European authorities are mainly worried about refugees not going to Europe.

“We have a problem because we can’t have a lot of Syrian refugees coming to our country illegally,” Geagea said. He wants the Syrians to go back to areas in Syria that are controlled by either the government or opposition.

But Shayoukh says he doesn’t have anywhere to go.

The government in Damascus is after him because he is against the Syrian President Bashar Assad. He also said that the Islamist group in his hometown is acting like the government’s intelligence services in silencing people who disagree with them.

Kremlin detractors claim Russia is murdering its enemies abroad

The soldier who left the army was shot many times and then hit by a car in Spain and the leader of a group was hit many times with a hammer in Lithuania. The journalist got sick from possible poisoning in Germany.

Ever since President Vladimir Putin started the war in Ukraine, Russians in Europe and other places have been targeted with attacks and harassment, and Moscow’s intelligence agents are being blamed for it.

Even though Western governments try to stop Russian spies, experts say that the Russian government can still go after people they see as traitors in other countries to stop them from speaking out. People who are against Putin are more and more worried about the power of Moscow’s security forces, even in places they used to feel were safe.

“We got out of Russia and felt like we had escaped from jail,” said Irina Dolinina, a journalist at the Important Stories news outlet in Prague.

Dolinina and her coworker Alesya Marokhovskaya were bothered in 2023, making them worried that someone was watching them. They got scary messages in the comments on a website and were told not to go to a conference in Sweden. To emphasize, the threat had their airplane ticket details, where they would sit, and their hotel reservation.

“We were wrong to think we were safe here,” Dolinina said to The Associated Press.

The Kremlin is often blamed for attacking its enemies outside of Russia, even though it denies it.

Some well-known cases are the death of Leon Trotsky, a former Soviet revolutionary who was killed in Mexico in 1940 by a Soviet agent, and the death of Georgi Markov, a dissenting worker for the BBC’s Bulgarian service, who died in London in 1978 after being attacked with a poisoned umbrella.

Britain was where other poisonings were caused by Russian security services under Putin’s rule. Alexander Litvinenko, a defector and former spy, died in 2006 after drinking tea that had been poisoned with a radioactive substance. In 2018, former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter got very sick after being attacked with an old Soviet-era nerve agent, but they eventually got better. The Kremlin kept saying they weren’t involved in the British cases.

Currently, many of the people who oppose the government in Russia, along with journalists and activists, have left the country because of the government’s strong actions against them. Many people think that Moscow is focusing more on them, and officials are saying it too.

Russian authorities are looking for many people, even if they seem unimportant, because they think these people could come back to Russia and cause a lot of harm. This was explained by security expert Andrei Soldatov.

Many people who have been forced to leave their home countries are being treated badly in many places, including former Soviet countries with a lot of Russian people and also in Europe and other places.

People who speak out and reporters who work on their own have said they are feeling sick and believe they may have been poisoned.

Journalist Elena Kostyuchenko got sick on a train from Munich to Berlin in 2022. German authorities are looking into it as a possible murder attempt.

Natalia Arno, the leader of the Free Russia Foundation in the U. S, told AP that she is still dealing with nerve damage after a suspected poisoning in Prague in May. She thinks Russian security tried to “quiet” her because she supports democracy.

In a really violent attack, pilot Maksim Kuzminov’s body with lots of bullet holes was found in La Cala, Spain, near the eastern port of Alicante. He was shot and then run over by a car. Threats came in after he stole a Russian helicopter and flew it to Ukraine.

Kuzminov, who is 33 years old, was called a “moral corpse” by Sergei Naryshkin, the leader of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, as soon as he started planning his “bad and awful crime. ”

In March, Leonid Volkov, who works for a politician named Alexei Navalny, got his arm broken in a hammer attack in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Lithuania’s security service thinks the attack was likely planned and carried out by Russians. On April 19, Polish police arrested two people for allegedly attacking Volkov under orders from a foreign spy agency.

For many years, Putin has been in charge, and the Kremlin has repeatedly said that it is not trying to harm its enemies within Russia and in other countries. It has not said anything about the suspected poisonings. Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, refused to talk about Volkov’s situation, saying it is Lithuania’s Interior Ministry’s problem.

Even new anti-war groups are being targeted by Moscow.

Russians in Stockholm, Sweden, made a group to support Ukraine and political prisoners. They burned a fake person that looked like Putin outside the Russian Embassy, calling him a “war criminal”.

Six months later, the Russian government said the group was bad and could punish its members with fines and jail. Police visited their family in Russia and their private information was shared without their permission, according to their family members who spoke with AP. They spoke anonymously because they were worried about their safety.

The Russian Orthodox Tsargrad media said that some people in the group could be working for other countries’ spy agencies. It called them “terrorists. ” The pro-Kremlin outlet said they should expect bad things if they keep fighting against the war.

A few days later, during a visit to family in St Petersburg, Marina said that a police car stopped in front of her as she was leaving a store. Three men got out and asked for her papers. They made her get into the car and drove her to a police station with the siren on.

It was very frightening. Marina was surprised and worried that they knew exactly where she was. She did not want to share her last name because she is afraid for her safety.

She was shown the leaked data and video of the embassy protest, and investigators asked her to tell them who else was involved.

Interference by China did not affect Canada’s overall results of the 2019 election

China trying to get involved did not change the outcome of the 2019 and 2021 elections that Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won, according to a government investigation.

In a report on Friday, commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue said that some election results in a few areas may have been influenced, but it’s not certain.

Hogue listened to a lot of information and looked at secret papers. He found that nobody, not even Beijing, affected Canada’s voting system during the two national elections.

“Our system is still strong,” said Hogue after her report was released. People voted and their votes were counted properly. There is no evidence of any interference.

She said that trying to influence the government didn’t make a difference in the last two elections.

However, Hogue found in her report that outside influence made people in Canada have less trust in their democracy. “This is the biggest damage Canada has faced because of other countries getting involved. ”

The investigation recently finished 10 days of public meetings to look into claims of China, India, Russia, and other countries influencing the last two elections.

“I found out that other countries trying to influence us is a common thing, not only in Canada but everywhere. ” Hogue said he also learned that the government tries to respond to the problem, whether or not there is an election happening.

“Foreign interference is similar to a crime. ” It is always there. Its ways change over time. Although the government can try to find solutions, it may not be possible to completely get rid of it. With that being said, we should stop it and lessen its impact.

The Liberals started a new rule in 2019. If a group of government officials decides that something might affect Canada’s ability to have a fair election, they will tell the public about it.

There was no announcement about the 2019 or 2021 elections. The Liberals won the election with less than half the votes and the Conservatives became the main opposing party.

Hogue said she can’t rule out the chance that foreign interference could have affected the results in some specific ridings. “In my opinion, only a few ridings are affected and we don’t know for sure how much foreign interference will ultimately impact the situation. ”

Hogue mentioned two examples that were talked about a lot in the public meetings.

She examined the competition for the Liberal nomination in the Toronto area of Don Valley North in 2019, and Han Dong was chosen as the candidate.

The Canadian security agency found a possible plan involving a bus of Chinese students with fake papers, but Hogue said there was not enough proof to know what really happened.

She said that in the 2021 election in British Columbia’s Steveston-Richmond East, there is a good chance that Chinese interference hurt Conservative candidate Kenny Chiu’s chances of winning the seat.

In general, Hogue found that foreign meddling probably affected some votes in the 2019 and 2021 elections, and also hurt the rights of voters to have a fair and free election without outside pressure or secret influence.

“This has probably not been a big problem so far, but it might get worse in the future. ”

Politicians might change what they say and do because of foreign interference. This might happen more if we don’t protect against it, Hogue said.

“This would really hurt our democracy because it goes against the idea that politicians should be able to share their opinions and the opinions of the people they represent without being influenced by another country in secret. ”

The investigation will now focus on bigger problems with government policies, like how good they are at stopping foreign interference.

“Trying to interfere in Canadian matters has been happening for a long time. By the 1980s, there were clear warnings that Beijing was trying to influence and take advantage of the Chinese community in Canada. ”

Last February, the Globe and Mail reported that China tried to help the Liberal party win the 2021 election and prevent Conservative politicians who were not friendly to China from winning.

Next month, the government said that someone independent would check for foreign interference in the elections. This is one way they are trying to stop meddling and make people feel more confident about the elections.

David Johnston, a person in charge of a big job, said in a report in May 2023 that there are big problems in the way information is shared and understood between security agencies and the government.

However, he did not find any instances of ministers, the prime minister, or their offices purposefully or carelessly ignoring intelligence, advice, or recommendations.

Johnston said that some information got out and was not understood correctly by some media because they didn’t have enough context.

In the end, he advised not to have a public investigation because a commissioner would face the same problems with keeping things secret as he did.

In September, the government said Hogue would lead a public inquiry, even though there were more leaks to the media and pressure from other political parties.

Jesus won’t leave this summer – Arteta confirms

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday that the club has no intention of allowing striker Gabriel Jesus to leave the club this summer.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Arsenal would be willing to listen to offers for the 27-year-old, who will have three years remaining on his contract at the end of the season.

Jesus has scored eight goals in 33 appearances this season, playing primarily as a striker but also out wide.

The Brazil international has struggled with knee problems since undergoing surgery for an injury sustained at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He underwent a second minor operation in January and admitted last month he couldn’t “remember the last day I played football without pain.”

Kai Havertz has assumed a key role in leading Arsenal’s attack at the expense of Jesus of late but when asked on Friday about speculation that the Brazil international could leave the club, Arteta said: “I don’t know where this is coming from.”

Sources have told ESPN that Arsenal are prepared to sell several fringe players to help boost their summer transfer budget.

Pushed on whether he had any intention of letting Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City for £45 million ($56.5m) in 2022, move on at the end of the campaign, Arteta replied: “No, no.”

Arteta stated his hope that Jorginho would soon agree to a new deal as talks continue over an extension.

The 32-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and the Italy international is thought to be keen on staying at the club he joined from Chelsea for £12 million in January last year.

“I would love to keep him,” Arteta said. “He knows that. The club is fully supportive of that. He’s a really important player with us, on and off the field. He makes us better so we want him to stay.”

Arteta has a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of Saturday’s visit of Bournemouth and the Arsenal boss is weighing whether to include Jurriën Timber after two appearances for Arsenal under-21s having been sidelined since August following knee surgery.

“We won’t know [if Timber is ready] until we throw him in there,” Arteta added.

“It’s tricky because there are only three games to go and he has missed eight months of football, he’s played only 150 minutes of football with the U21s, it’s a question that can only be resolved by throwing him on the pitch and we will see what happens, we have to try to nail that decision when [we take it].”

ECL PAYS TRIBUTE TO ABC ON SECOND MEMORIAL OF VETERAN CHIKWANDA ANNIVERSARY

ECL PAYS TRIBUTE TO ABC ON SECOND MEMORIAL OF VETERAN CHIKWANDA ANNIVERSARY-3rd May 2024, Lusaka.

Good Evening fellow Zambians,

Third May is an important day, not only on the calendar of the esteemed Chikwanda family, but also to the entire nation of Zambia because on this day, Hon. Alexander Bwalya Chikwanda (ABC) left us to join the Lord-may his soul rest in peace.

I am humbled to stand before you today to speak about him on my own behalf and on behalf of my dear wife Mrs. Esther Lungu as well as on behalf of our party-the Patriotic Front (PF). At this moment, allow me to recognise the Chikwanda family members led by the matriarch Mrs Margarete Chikwanda.

Hon. Chikwanda was known from one corner of the border of Zambia to the other by many names and titles, he was a man of many hats and many friends. I was, however, privileged as your former President to know the fallen hero born on 3rd December 1938 in Kasama only as ´Uncle ABC, ´ an older brother, an uncle and indeed a statesman of undisputed repute.

Some knew him as Governor of Zambezi District in Northwestern province under President Kenneth Kaunda whose centenary we celebrated on 28th April just a few days ago.

Others may recall him as a State House Chief of Staff, Minister of Health, Minister of Local Government, Minister of Agriculture and of the most venerated Ministers of Finance of Zambia under my Presidency and earlier under the government of President Michael Chilufya. In other words, Mr. Chikwanda was a statesman who saved Zambia in different portfolios with grace, humility and honesty.

Today, we celebrate Uncle ABC, a great unifier and wise diplomat. In the PF, he was instrumental in uniting us all following the untimely death of our political hero and president, Micheal Chilufya Sata in 2015. Very few know how tirelessly he worked hard to unite factions in the various political parties he belonged to over the years, prior to independence, right up to the point of answering God´s call. Had he been alive, l am very sure political frictions and factions in PF would have been less or somehow resolved.

In Uncle ABC, Zambia lost a renowned Kingmaker who was humble, respectful and dedicated to national duty. Despite being older in age and indeed experience in running government at Cabinet level, Mr. Chikanda was magnanimous and humble enough to save under my presidency both in the party and at national level.

From uncle, we all learn the art and science of being a wise statesman as he did not see himself more wiser, older or better than younger leaders who overtook him in ranks. “If you cannot accept to be led, then you are not ready or fit to lead”, that is what Uncle ABC taught us.

He was an astute fearless politician who harboured no prejudice or hatred against anyone. He was a true and reliable friend of all Zambians regardless of tribe, age, religion, race, or political affiliation. Uncle ABC was a true disciple of KK in proclaiming “One Zambia, One Nation” by words, deeds and lifestyle.

Mr. Chikwanda was a fountain of wisdom. He selflessly gave counsel to anyone that sought it.
Today, we remember Uncle ABC, one of the known generous people I ever came across. He would give and give till recipients got embarrassed. That was Uncle ABC for you.

I cannot close this second-year memorial note without mentioning that he also left behind his wonderful wife, our mother ba Margarete, four children, men, and women namely, Bwembya, Thilasoni, Chanda and Bwalya. In addition, Mr. Chikwanda left behind 14 (fourteen) wonderful grandchildren. We thank God that his name has remained with us through his direct family.

Until the day we meet again, I beseech all of you to celebrate the great Uncle ABC as he looks down on us from heaven with our dear lord Jesus Christ.

God bless you all and thank you.

Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu
Sixth President of Zambia.

STOP DEMONIZING ZNBC TV PRESENTER CHISULO

STOP DEMONIZING ZNBC TV PRESENTER CHISULO

My article is not meant to excite anyone because in a perfect society we need to disagree to agree.

Debate has ensued after ZNBC TV 1 Presenter Margaret Chisulo guided a Caller to use a language familiar with the Presenter.

Chisulo indicated that she could only understand three languages; English, Bemba and Nyanja.

The woman insisted to use Lozi when she could ably communicated effectively in the English language.

The caller was using good English to argue with the presenter.

Was the Presenter supposed to go for a break rushing to Local language section to invite an interpreter?

Get to know that if the presenter is struggling to understand the caller due to language barriers and it is affecting the flow of the program, it might be appropriate for them to politely ask the caller to switch to a language they understand better.

However, it is essential for the presenter to handle the situation with sensitivity and respect for the caller’s language and culture.

If a caller insults someone on air using a language not familiar to the presenter, the legal implications would affect the Presenter and the Station in general.

In many places, presenters are responsible for the content aired on their platforms, so they might face legal consequences if offensive or defamatory language is broadcasted.

However, if the presenter genuinely didn’t understand the insult and promptly disavows or apologizes for it, they might have some defense against legal liability.

Additionally, the broadcaster might have measures in place to prevent such incidents, such as pre-screening calls or having a delay system to censor inappropriate content before it goes on air. If these measures are not in place or fail to prevent the incident, the broadcaster could still face repercussions.

It’s crucial for broadcasters and presenters to be aware of the laws and regulations regarding broadcasting content, including offensive language, and to take appropriate measures to prevent legal issues.

As people condemn the presenter, why don’t we also condemn the caller diverting an important discussion on labour matters to discuss tribalism?

The caller was abusing the presenter for nothing when tribe cannot put food on the table.

Someone recently posted politics on ZNBC page, we have not heard what happened to the admin.

Another one mentioned ECL in place of HH and we agree that it was a genuine mistake.

Why tulefwaya ukutanika Chisulo?

Let’s just use this development for future improvements and put our energies towards things that can improve the welfare of Zambians.

Lord Cameron met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday

Lord Cameron met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday

“Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it’s defending itself,” Lord Cameron said.

Russia condemned what it called “another very dangerous statement”.

“This is a direct escalation of tension around the Ukrainian conflict, which would potentially pose a threat to European security,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Lord Cameron did not directly endorse the idea of British weapons being used to strike targets inside Russia.

But until now, the UK has generally let it be understood – without spelling it out – that weapons such as the long range Storm Shadow missile should only be used inside sovereign Ukrainian territory. There have been several examples of its successful use in Russian-occupied Crimea, including against elements of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

However, coming on the heels of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s pledge to give Ukraine £3bn ($3.76bn) in military assistance every year for the foreseeable future, it seems Lord Cameron wanted to emphasise that it is up to Ukraine to decide what it does with it.

The US has reportedly urged Ukraine to halt its strikes on oil refineries in Russia, fearing it could provoke an escalation in the conflict.

Mr Peskov also took aim at French President Emmanuel Macron, who said this week that the West would “legitimately” have to consider whether to send ground troops to Ukraine “if the Russians were to break through the front lines, if there were a Ukrainian request”.

Mr Macron’s remarks to The Economist were a “very dangerous trend”, said the Kremlin spokesman. However, the French leader made clear in his interview that if Russia won in Ukraine, there would be no security in Europe.

Russian forces have seized several villages in eastern Ukraine during recent advances, taking advantage of Ukraine’s shortages of weapons and manpower.

Ukrainian intelligence officials also believe Russia is gearing up for a summer offensive in the north-eastern regions of Kharkiv and Sumy.

The commander of the national guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko, warned recently that Russia was preparing “unpleasant surprises” and quietly recruiting 30,000 people a month.

A Russian strike on Kharkiv on Friday killed an elderly woman in her home, and a tram carrying passengers also came under fire, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. (BBC News)

lady dies after friends allegedly pushed her into pot of boiling fresh pepper and tomatoes

A Nigerian lady identified as Roseline has died due to severe burns after she was pushed into a big pot of boiling grounded fresh pepper and tomatoes by her friends in Delta State.

Activist, Comrade Israel Joe, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Friday, May 3, 2024, said Roseline died last Friday after two weeks of fighting for her life in a hospital in Warri.

According to Joe, before Roseline passed away, she revealed that her friends were ‘beefing’ her but she still travelled with them for a catering job in Sapele where the incident happened.

The activist is demanding justice for the deceased, vowing to bring the perpetrators to book

RIP, dear Rozzy. She was pushed into a big boiling pot of grinded fresh pepper and tomatoes by her friend on Saturday, 13th April. She battled for about two weeks with her roasted/boiled body and finally died last week Friday 26th April,” he wrote.

Rozzy was buried four days ago, but we can’t just allow things to slide as though nothing happened. What an evíI friendship like those I once had.

Nobody in the neighbourhood in Otokutu knew Roseline had been allegedly kíIIed by these same friends she was living with. She was buried with no one to bid her goodbye and with no single bųríaI poster to honour her. Just two days in the morgue, the mortuary attendants demanded she be carried away to bury.

According to Rozzy, her friends were beefing her, but she still decided to travel with them for a catering job in Sapele where they were speaking their local language with this Yoruba girl, Rozzy, not understanding their conversation.

All of a sudden, she landed in a very big pot of boiling fresh pepper and tomatoes where they even still delayed in rescuing her. She was later rushed to Sage Hospital, by Estate in Warri, where they managed the situation, but my friend couldn’t make it.

What pains me is that these two girls are still walking and gallivanting everywhere like nothing happened. I hate intimidation and oppression, especially against persons who are non-indigenes.

No report to the police, no investigations, no arrest, nothing. The law is superior, a citizen is a citizen and possesses the full right of citizenship. Keep your “indigeneship” in your pocket, the police must smoke them out so they can face the law. Na God dey help who nor get helper.

We shall fight for Rozzy, you can not just be kílled like a chicken and buried like an aŋímąl. Nobody deserves such a hørribIe dęąth. We never got to meet Rose, only chatting on Facebook due to endless busy schedules only to see you, at the most disgusting sight at Sage Hospital, hoping for your recovery, but dęąțĥ stole you. Justice shall prevail, including if you would be exhumed.

Analysing ‘snakes’ that will bite, swallow HH in 2026

It is said that “opportunistic people are masters of taking advantage of favourable circumstances”.

Ransom Riggs warned that, “An opportunist disguised as a friend can be every bit as dangerous as an outright enemy.”

If there is one activity that shows how cunning human beings can be, it is the field of politics.

Those who were your sworn enemies yesterday today stand tall as your chief praise singers and even pretend to understand you and your party manifesto better than those who toiled to usher the cipani into government. In Zambia, political opportunism reigns high. It is a sphere of “everyone belongs to everyone else”. The men and women who practice this political resourcefulness are shameless at best. In less than a year, we saw how business executives and bank chief executive officers who used to jog with Edgar Lungu when he was president vanished in thin air. They seamlessly found new adhesive, clothing, and today are firmly glued to Hakainde Hichilema and his new dawn administration. Other politicians and tenderpreneurs have similarly distanced themselves from Edgar and are now in a bromance with Hakainde. They seem to know and understand Hakainde’s perceived leadership qualities better than those he toiled with for 15 solid years in opposition.

How they have suddenly seen the UPND to be a nationalist party, HH as a unifier and the economic saviour we needed, is confounding. We know of people who even ahead of the 2021 polls were calling HH a tribalist, a kachema who can’t run the country, among other things. But today they have changed their colours like a chameleon. Surprisingly, even Hakainde has embraced them as his lieutenants. They are his new strategists, political and business confidants. If Hakainde is not careful he will cry alone in the political wilderness!

We know politicians are choosy – pernickety – when it comes to advice. They simply won’t take it from anywhere. They first look at the face such opinion or warning is coming from.

However, we urge Hakainde and his team to pay attention to Dr Chris Zumani Zimba’s warning.

Dr Zimba warns of slippery political traitors who pay false allegiance to HH.

“As we speak today, there are many Zambians as we[ll] as political leaders who are behaving exactly like this snake around President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) projecting false friendship when they mean to eat big and dump him soon – they are evil. These are slippery political traitors who pay false allegiance to HH and are manipulatively dancing treachery at Community House today because of what they are benefiting for now and nothing else,” Dr Zimba charges in his writeup titled: 12 most poisonous snakes that will bite and dump HH in 2026 after his shameful defeat – Part 1. “In 2026 when HH is shamelessly detested, politically rejected and brutally defeated by a countrywide mob of voters, these snakes – political traitors will automatically evaporate from him, denounce Bally and start singing for the new republican

president. Snakes can never befriend man perpetually, they just pretend to be cool as long as they’re warm and comfortable. But trust me, snakes soon betray, strike and sometimes kill their own host with their inherit poison. HH must wait for 2026. If HH thinks he is a big snake of our politics specialised in mingalato, he is fooling himself because he now faces bigger and better deadly pythons. He will be nicely swallowed and chewed into pieces! In 2026, Bally will be fixed by voters and his anaconda snakes will eat him alive and vanish to their new host!”

As they say the people with the best advice are usually the ones who have been through the most! Hakainde may not like Chris because the man served under Edgar, but he is worthy listening to because he’s talking about his experiences too. Chris as a researcher and former political advisor to Edgar is also talking about how his former boss has been deserted by some of his once loudest praise singers – empty tins that projected themselves as experts on almost every subject. Today, they have shifted their allegiance to Hakainde, a man they called kachema, a novice in politics. And they can’t even greet Edgar because he no longer has political power. Hmmm, so soon! These are very dangerous characters that Hakainde, if he is wise, which we expect him to be, should not entertain. They are truly turncoats whose only interest is their mouths- THE MAST

MY PERSONAL TAKE ON THE ZNBC LIVE PROGRAMME ISSUE- Amb. Chibamba Kanyama

MY PERSONAL TAKE ON THE ZNBC LIVE PROGRAMME ISSUE

By Amb. Chibamba Kanyama

At a reception last night in Minnesota where I served as guest, there was an offer for thousands of new books to schools in Zambia. There was a further offer that one set of books would be printed in a local language.

I needed to explain this offer with utmost care to this group of philanthropists. It was either they printed all books in English or included all seven Zambian languages. I told them ethnicity and language diversity was Zambia’s heritage and pride. I gave a broader context to the issue and further demonstrated to them how the national broadcaster, ZNBC, had clear guidelines on the treatment of the local languages on both radio and television. As a country, we have been proud of this diversity.

In addition, we have for many years leveraged the ZNBC platform to demonstrate unity in diversity. This is reflected in an article on One Zambia, One Nation written by Lutz Marten and Nancy C. Kula,
‘Questions of language and identity have played an important role throughout modern Zambian history, particularly after independence, when the question of the national identity of the new state took centre stage. Language in Zambia is important for national, political, and ethnic identities, for communication, education, and popular culture.’

I have followed the social media debate involving a caller and TV anchor Margaret Chisulo, a young woman with a very pleasant personality. Writing in my personal capacity, I am not surprised with the nature of public reaction because ZNBC has for years managed local language diversity very well. My take is that the incident is very isolated and does not reflect ZNBC policy or practice on use of local languages. The caller who spoke Lozi was merely testing the ZNBC policy on languages after having listened to callers use Bemba and Nyanja liberally. She decided to call and use Lozi. She was immediately stopped. That’s where the issue is. In any case, that was not the first time such has happened except that in previous incidences, callers were allowed to continue to make their contributions in their language of comfort.

Incidentally, It’s now I realize that as one who served as ZNBC Director General at one point, we never did enough during my time to orient young broadcasters about this practice that has been in place since independence. I took it for granted it was a straight forward matter.

It is my hope that ZNBC Management will learn from what happened as articulated by the Board Chairpwrson Bishop Joseph Kazhila. I propose the Corporation embarks on a process of inducting new broadcasters on how to position local languages on ZNBC. Perhaps, there could even be an opportunity to have a special mixed-bag TV broadcast that allows callers to express themselves in any language of comfort and this can work very well if there is immediate interpretation. This can enhance the level of national unity we need because people will start learning other languages via a programme that is primarily anchored in English.

For now, we can rest assured that the ZNBC Board and Management are competent enough to handle the issue. All is well!

Trump returns to campaign with fear of jail time if he violates trial gag order

Donald Trump will take a break from his hush money trial to talk to voters in Wisconsin and Michigan. This comes after he was in trouble for disobeying a court order.

People are going to pay attention to what he says because he got in trouble for talking about the case. He had to pay a $9,000 fine. Judge Juan M. has decided to make Trump pay a fine for the posts on his Truth Social account and campaign website. Merchan said that if Trump keeps breaking the rules, he will punish him by putting him in jail.

The ex-president is trying to do something that has never been done before in American history. He is running for president again as the likely Republican candidate, at the same time as he is being accused of a serious crime in New York. Trump often criticizes Merchan, prosecutors, and people who might testify against him at his rallies and on social media. His supporters like when he does this, but it might cause legal problems for him.

Trump says he’s just using his right to free speech, but his posts on Truth Social and campaign website were removed. Merchan is thinking about other possible instances where Trump may have broken a rule about speaking freely, and will listen to reasons why on Thursday.

Trump seemed upset after the ninth day of the trial ended. He said he’d rather be in Georgia and New Hampshire than in court.

“He said the people running the campaign don’t want me to be involved. ”

Trump has said many times that these cases against him are interfering with the election. He believes they are stopping him from campaigning for the presidential election in November.

The gag order stopped him from talking publicly about the people involved in his hush money case.

Manhattan prosecutors say Trump and his friends did something illegal to try and change the 2016 election by buying and hiding stories. He says he didn’t do it.

Trump went to Wisconsin and Michigan for the second time in a month. These states are important because they can go either way in the election. In recent rallies, the ex-president mainly talked about immigration and people living in the U. SSpeaking bad about people who do illegal things and are thought to have done crimes by calling them “animals”.

Wisconsin and Michigan are few of the states that will likely decide the 2024 election.

For Trump to win in both states, he needs to get a lot of support from the suburbs. This includes places like the areas outside of Milwaukee and Saginaw, Michigan, where he will be having rallies on Wednesday. He didn’t do well in the suburban areas during the primary election this year, even though he did really well compared to the other Republican candidates.

Trump keeps saying that he didn’t really lose the 2020 election, even though that’s not true. Trump lost in important states in 2020. People checked the results many times, but he still lost. Even the Justice Department and other people looked at the results and agreed that he lost.

New prime minister appointed by Haiti’s transitional council

The newly established governing body of Haiti has selected a former sports professional to serve as the prime minister. They are trying to make a new government in a place with a lot of violence.

Fritz Belizaire was unexpectedly chosen to be the new interim Prime Minister instead of Michel Patrick Boisvert. Four out of seven voting members supported Belizaire, but some panel members didn’t know much about him.

The council wants to pick a group of people to help stop gangs from causing violence in the capital city and other areas. There was a lot of shooting in different parts of the city during the council’s meeting.

Over 90,000 people left the capital in one month, and more than 360,000 people have become homeless in recent years as gunmen destroy communities in rival areas.

On Tuesday, the council picked Edgard Leblanc Fils, who ran for president before, as the panel’s president.

Fils said that Belizaire is a great choice for prime minister during a short speech to about 20 people. “What matters is that we are determined to work together, put aside our differences, resolve conflicts, and agree on things. ”

He said the group of leaders met on Monday to discuss Haiti’s security crisis and figure out the best way to fix it. “We are acknowledging that the people are going through a hard time,” he said.

Belizaire’s announcement was surprising. The people in the room started talking quietly when the officials said that four council members chose Belizaire to be the prime minister.

Leslie Voltaire, a member of the voting group, said to The Associated Press, “I don’t know him,” when asked if he supported Belizaire.

Belizaire was in charge of sports in Haiti from 2006 to 2011 when Rene Preval was president.

“He is not well-known,” said Robert Fatton, who is an expert on politics in Haiti at the University of Virginia. “He doesn’t appear to have his own group of supporters. ” Perhaps this is why he is the chosen prime minister, because different parties can agree on him being prime minister.

Council member Louis Gerald Gilles, who was on Belizaire’s side, told The Associated Press that the council wanted to choose a prime minister fast. He said that the people in Haiti can’t wait any longer. “Security is important for keeping society peaceful.”

Many regular people in Haiti were still without electricity for hours.

“They picked a new leader. ” Jean-Paul Eliason asked while walking in the streets of Port-au-Prince, promoting his shoe-shining business by ringing a bell.

When Eliason heard about Belizaire, who is 70 years old, he said that the name seemed familiar to him.

“It’s good news because it means the country can start doing the right things,” he said. “Keeping things safe is the most important thing. ” “Many people are running away because gangs are setting fire to their houses. ”

Sony Duvert, standing by his motorcycle near a barrier to stop gangs, said he didn’t know the new prime minister. He hopes the new prime minister will make Haiti safer.

“Every day, we are like soldiers with posting here,” he said. “I want Haiti to have a big change. ”

After a short announcement made almost two hours late, the council went back into a private room to discuss who they want in their cabinet. Voltaire said he did not think the council would announce cabinet choices on Tuesday.

Most of the people who were on Belizaire’s side were Fils, the council’s new president, Smith Augustin, Gilles and Emmanuel Vertilaire.

Fatton said they were an “unlikely” team and wanted to see if they could stay together.

Fils is a part of a political group called January 30, with parties like PHTK. It includes former president Michel Martelly and killed President Jovenel Moise. Augustin belongs to the EDE/RED political party, which was started by former Prime Minister Claude Joseph.

Gilles is in charge of the Dec 21 agreement, which is linked to the former prime minister Ariel Henry. Henry quit a few weeks after the gang attacks started. At the same time, Vertilaire is connected to the Pitit Desalin party, which is led by influential politician Jean-Charles Moise, who was happy about the announcement on Tuesday.

“Belizaire is a very important person in the country,” Moise said. “He knows the state very well and how to run it. ”

The transitional council will lead the country until a new president is chosen before it ends in February 2026.

Haitians disagree about whether a temporary government can help to calm their troubled country, where the capital has been under attack by gangs since Feb 29.

Gang members set fire to police stations, shot at the main airport which has been closed since March, and broke into Haiti’s two largest prisons, letting more than 4,000 prisoners go free. The largest seaport in the country is mostly stopped by gang violence.

But one thing is for sure: Haitians want to feel safe.

“Haitians are feeling very restless at the moment. ” They want to see what happens,” Fatton said.

The council is likely to agree to send Kenyan police to help fight gangs, but we aren’t sure when it will happen.

Henry, who used to be the leader of the country, was visiting an East African country when a group of gangs started attacking. He is still not able to go back to Haiti. He quit his job last week.

1864 nearly total ban on abortion lifted by Arizona lawmakers

The Arizona government has agreed to get rid of a very old rule against almost all abortions on Wednesday. The bill will now go to Gov Katie Hobbs, who is from the Democratic party and is likely to approve it.

Two members of the Republican party and members of the Democratic party in the Senate voted 16-14 to get rid of a ban on abortions that has been in place since the Civil War. This ban was recently allowed to be enforced by the state’s highest court. The ban on all abortions is still in place. It doesn’t have any exceptions for survivors of rape or incest, and only allows for procedures done to save the patient’s life. This will continue until the fall.

Hobbs said she’s excited to sign the repeal soon, with a ceremony planned for Thursday.

Hobbs said that women in Arizona shouldn’t have to live in a state where politicians are making decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor. “The repeal is needed to save women’s lives, but we still have a lot more to do to protect healthcare for women. ”

Reviving a law from the 1800s has made Republicans in Arizona feel like they are in a difficult position. Arizona is one of a few states where the outcome of the election will be very important.

“Women all over the country are experiencing chaos and cruelty because of Donald Trump,” said Vice-President Kamala Harris in a statement on Wednesday. Arizona Democrats are trying to fix the problems caused by Trump and his followers, but the state’s ban on abortion, with no exception for rape or incest, is still the law.

If the repeal bill is signed, a new law will make it illegal to have an abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy in Arizona. However, for a period of time, almost all abortions may become illegal, because the repeal will not take place until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, which will probably be in June or July.

Efforts started immediately to stop the old abortion ban from happening before the repeal happens.

Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes said that without a special rule, the people of Arizona might have to follow the almost complete ban on abortion for some time this year. “Don’t worry, my office is looking at every choice we have to stop this old law from happening. ”

Planned Parenthood Arizona asked the state’s highest court to stop a temporary halt in abortion services until the law changing the rules is in place.

The law that mostly stops abortions has been around since before Arizona became a state. Last month, the Arizona Supreme Court said that doctors could be charged with a crime for helping with an abortion. The law from 1864 says that anyone who helps with an abortion can go to jail for two to five years. Last week, the repeal bill barely passed in the Arizona House.

Voting on the bill took over an hour on Wednesday, with emotional speeches.

Democratic state Sen Eva Burch said, “This is about a law from the Civil War time that makes it a crime for doctors to perform almost all abortions. ” “We’re here to get rid of a law that is not good. ” I don’t think we should follow laws about women that were made when women were not allowed to vote because people thought their opinions were not as important as men’s.

Burch said on the Senate floor in March that she had a pregnancy that wasn’t going to survive, so she was going to have an abortion. On Wednesday, she told supporters of women’s ability to choose to have children that they still need to be careful, even after the law is changed.

“They will use all available resources to try to stop the ban from being lifted,” she said.

Many people in the Senate gallery caused disturbances while Republican state Sen Shawnna Bolick explained her vote to repeal a law and sided with the Democrats.

Bolick said that getting rid of the law would protect against very strong abortion rights proposals. She is married to Clint Bolick, who is a judge, and he voted to allow a law from a long time ago about abortion to be enforced again.

The senator said he wants to make sure that our state constitution limits the number of abortions. “I am here to keep more babies safe. ” I say yes when voting.

Supporters and opponents of abortion came to the Arizona Senate to speak out about their opinions.

A young girl prayed in front of a statue of Mary at school while a man yelled at people to ask for forgiveness.

Ex-president Donald Trump didn’t support a national abortion ban, but he’s happy he chose Supreme Court judges who allowed states to make it illegal. He’s worried it could make Republicans lose elections.

The Arizona law was stopped after the US Supreme Court’s decision in the Roe v. Wade case in 1973. Wade’s decision made sure that women all over the country have the right to get an abortion.

When the decision of Roe v Wade was canceled in June 2022, the former Arizona Attorney General, Mark Brnovich, who is a Republican, convinced a state judge that the ban from 1864 could be enforced again. However, the law has not been put into action while the case was going through the courts. Mayes, who took over for Brnovich, asked the state’s highest court not to bring back the law.

Planned Parenthood will make sure that patients can go to New Mexico and California for an abortion if they need to.

Supporters are gathering signatures for a vote to make it legal to have an abortion up to around 24 weeks into a pregnancy, with exceptions for when the parent’s life is in danger or to protect her physical or mental health.

Republican politicians are thinking about having different plans about abortion on the November voting list.

HICHILEMA’S UNENDING DEBT RESTRUCTURING SPEECHES-Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA’S UNENDING DEBT RESTRUCTURING SPEECHES

It is evident that administrative chaos, policy inconsistencies and leadership ineptitude form an integral part of Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s government’s overall failures.

Going by Mr Hichilema’s address in Solwezi yesterday, where he clearly explained how there are still pending issues or bottlenecks with the creditors, it is vivid that the man is in a state of denial and confusion about his fate and his plans.

Arising from this, we ask a question, if indeed, we still have pending problems with the creditors, why is this government celebrating a deal that has not been finalized? Why do they always want to deceive people? Why do they always find deception as a convenient way to hide their challenges from the people? Why celebrate a deal that has not been concluded?

And why is Mr Hichilema always blaming others for his failure to fulfill his own promises? Is it not him that promised the Zambians a lower cost of living? Mealie meal at K50? Low electricity tariffs, low cost of fuel, free university education and so on and so forth? Who made these promises to the Zambian people?

Let Mr Hichilema for once take responsibility of the chaos and his lack of vision and leadership qualities to take this country forward. Mr Hichilema is taking this country many steps backwards and instead of facing his lies and correct them, all he is subjecting the people to are more lies, empty promises and blame game speeches.

Mr Hichilema is always preaching to Zambians to work hard and stop being lazy. But why is he not working hard himself so that the people can see the results? Are the disastrous results we are seeing today a product of hard work? Does the economy as it stands today point to a hard working President and government?

We need a better and more competent leadership and clearly UPND is not it.

Let’s remove UPND in 2026. If we don’t, we shall face misery, poverty and squalor in the future like never seen before. This is a failed government.

Fred M’membe
President of the Socialist Party

HH is loveable; he’ll secure second term, but…..

The other day, the much respected Afrobarometer, a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that conducts public attitude surveys on democracy, governance, the economy, and society, headquartered in Ghana, put Hakainde Hichilema in pole position at an impressive 75% in a recent survey on best performing Presidents in Southern Africa.

As expected, some of our politicians did not take kindly to this result. Taking to Social media to vent his displeasure and frustrations; Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa had this to write, “Clearly, respondents were all foreigners and not local Zambians. The President’s approval ratings on the ground are it its lowest of all time and anyone that may be telling him the opposite, is not kind to him.”

Sampa goes on to claim that he’s constantly on the ground and listens to ordinary citizens on a daily basis.

“The entire province of Lusaka things are rather for him. There would have to be some huge miracle in delivery of expectations to change their opinion in the next 2 years,” he observes.

As political and social analysts, we are privileged to have an ear to the ground. Unlike the Matero lawmaker, our interactions with the masses aren’t limited to pitching-up in a restaurant teeming with eager customers at a busy market, once in a while, to enjoy nshima with our favourite dish of nshima with usi and chiny’onge; we are ever in the shanty compounds listening to people’s concerns and helping-out where ever necessary.

For instance, yesterday we found ourselves Solwezi’s energetic and vibrant Kiawama compound, where folks always seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere, to gauge the mood of the people regarding our political dispensation. Our visit actually coincided with Hichilema’s presence in the area; the President was in the province to officiate at the national “May Day” celebrations being commemorated in the area for the very first time since our independence.

Thousands of people had found their way to the Central Business District using whatever imaginable means of transport – ox carts, bicycles and motorbikes to just catch a glimpse of our beloved President as his motorcade made its way from the small airport to the venue of the occasion. Knowing the Kaondes, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that some of them actually used broom sticks to get there!

“Oh my God!” exclaimed a middle aged woman in Kaonde. “There he’s…..in a black suit and red tie!”

“This is so nice….” said a septuagenarian bending over a walking stick. “I am so happy to see the man who has made it possible for my grandchildren to go to school so that they can be like him…”

The stadium where the event was being held was filled to its capacity; it was a carnival atmosphere! Boisterous college students benefitting school bursaries; enthusiastic pupils who no longer have to sit on the floor; senior citizens with lit faces rest assured no cabinet minister will ‘chew’ their social cash; recently deployed civil servants in their colourful uniforms and of course, upbeat contractors who’d just been awarded contracts under CDF had turned up in their numbers to offer solidarity to a President they’re proud to refer to as, “Bally!”

We may still be grappling with a few challenges here and there at the moment such as the intolerable price of our staple food (aka bwali) or fuel, but there’s absolutely no way anyone is beating Bally at the polls, including Mr. Alebwelelapo himself! Bally has already endeared himself to the electorate….. what’s remaining is just adding the icing on the cake by reducing the price of mealie meal and the cost of transport.

Moreover, Hichilema is inspiring! Many youths actually identify with Hichilema; they now believe that with just a bit of discipline and hardwok, a child of a peasant, house servant, security guard or street vendor can break the artificial ceiling and become the second largest cattle rancher in the country or indeed Republican president! Young people will therefore still give HH another mandate no matter the odds!

But if truth, and nothing but the truth be told, some of his MPs face a Herculean task of being given a fresh mandate by the frustrated electorates eager to punish them for being ‘AWOL’ from their constituencies; failing to implement massive CDF projects like Sunday Chanda is doing in Kanchibiya; not willing to come to the aid of those under the siege of bereavement or ailments in their families and retorting that they aren’t ATMs whenever asked for money!

If President Hichilema is too avoid the challenge of dealing with a hung parliament in 2026 like Levy Mwanawasa did in 2001, it’s high time he cracked the whip and scattered those MPs idling and enjoying the good life of Lusaka into the constituencies to spearhead CDF sponsored projects as well as making themselves available to bail-out the electorate in the shanty compounds from whatever challenges they may be facing.

This equally applies to those aspiring to contest as UPND parliamentary candidates in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces. Do not restrict your intentions to Facebook! Elections are not won during the year of the elections whereby you concentrate on handing-out cheap T.shirts and chitenge materials, but rather now when the masses can easily identify you with a track record of community work!

ZESCO revenue for 2023 hits $1.1 billion

If you thought Zambia has no locally owned billion dollar businesses, well think again. Zambia’s state owned power utility ZESCO has posted revenues in excess of $1 billion (K28.23 billion) in 2023, surpassing the initial budget of K21 billion that had been set.

According to the regulator, the Energy Regulation Board – ERB, ZESCO was able to surpass its budgeted revenue but was adversely affected by the exchange rate for its power purchase agreements whose payment terms are denominated in dollars.

Analysts say, it’s these dollar contracts that are also contributing to the public utility to shockingly opt to load shed local clients who pay in Kwacha, in preference for continued exports which are pegged in US dollars.

The revenue revelation by ERB however is silent on the cost and administration expenditure structure of the utility which remains the biggest challenge. ZESCO continues to be used by successive governments, including the current new dawn administration as an employment agent for cronies, relatives and their family connections, a vicious circle that leads to incompetent management and operations.

Today, local businesses and households in Zambia are being subjected to about half a day of load shedding (though the official time of power cuts is reported to be 8 hours) due to mostly the actions of an incompetent board and management appointed on political and nepotism considerations.

The utility however boasts of having some of the best engineers and professionals in their employ but lack of a merit based systems for promotion and reward has left many of these talented Zambians frustrated and disillusioned.

ZESCO has been dilly dallying on instituting the force majeure clause to halt exports to meet local requirements. In a double standard move, the power utility has instead proceeded to serve its local clients letters invoking the force majeure clause to justify their inability to supply power as per contractual agreements.

With revenues of $1.1 billion, a regulatory environment that favours ZESCO and a history of a monopoly that has seen the utility own the largest electricity generation and distribution infrastructure, with adequate regional power transmission inter-connectors, one wonders how the utility can fail to supply power to the local market.
