‘You see skeletons’ – The deadly migrant crossing along South Africa’s border

Many migrants risk all to reach South Africa, making a notoriously dangerous journey across the border from Zimbabwe.

Having fled poverty and desperation elsewhere in Africa they feel they have no choice. But as elections approach, xenophobic sentiment is on the rise and South Africa’s government is under pressure to tighten the border.

The men who raped Portie Murevesi did not care that she was visibly pregnant.

They attacked her with glass bottles too, she told us, pointing to a large and jagged scar on her forearm.

Now, her pregnancy almost at full term, she is recovering at a church-run shelter in the South African border town of Musina.

“When I try to sleep sometimes, I see what those men did to me,” she told the BBC.

Musina is well known as a place of refuge for migrants who, like Ms Murevesi, slip unnoticed over the border.

The migrants who make it have survived a difficult trek through the bush. It is lawless and unforgiving territory. Wild animals and gangs of criminals are a constant threat.

Stories of theft, beatings, rapes, and even killings are common.

“It is very, very dangerous,” a Zimbabwean man, who only gave his name as George, told us.

“You see skeletons, you see someone already killed two or three months ago,” he said about his own crossing.

We met him as night fell in Musina and groups of men returned to a dingy compound of tin-roofed huts.

The lucky ones had found some casual work in town, earning a little cash to send back to their families in neighbouring countries.

One explained: “We can’t go back to Zimbabwe because there is nothing there. We’re starving. There is no food.”

No one knows for sure how many undocumented migrants live, under the radar of the authorities, in South Africa, the continent’s most advanced economy.

The last census found that there were more than 2.4 million foreigners – nearly half of them Zimbabwean – living in the country, accounting for just over 3% of the population.

However, there are no official estimates for the number of those who have entered illegally.

And with a general election scheduled for the end of May, illegal immigration has become a highly charged political issue.

The South African authorities say they are tightening border security.

We saw for ourselves the enormity of the task.

Along the road from Musina towards the Limpopo River, which separates South Africa and Zimbabwe, coils of metal glint in the undergrowth.

It is the remains of a border fence: flimsy, piecemeal, trampled.

The river itself is all but dried up. And there, in the sweltering heat, dozens of people bustle back and forth across an invisible border.

Donkeys drag carts, laden with goods, across the cracked riverbed.

Women, balancing stacks of packages on their heads, hurry alongside.

They told us that it takes about five minutes to walk from the nearest Zimbabwean village to South Africa.

And there is nothing – no fence, no guards – to stop them.

John – who asked for his name to be changed to protect his identity – sat on his cart, occasionally twitching a whip at his restless donkeys. Watermelons were piled up on the wagon.

He has a family at home in Zimbabwe, he told us. But there are no jobs there and not enough food. So now he grows the melons and brings them over to sell in South Africa, where they fetch a far higher price.

“I do this to survive,” he says.

It is a thriving, illicit, cross-border marketplace. While the migrants who cross here face a grueling trek to Musina, most of the goods are shifted back and forth by cart or car.

Occasionally, John told us, soldiers arrive and make arrests. But there is usually a warning, he added, and it is easy – albeit risky – to melt into the bush.

But the South African government wants to take back control. Last year President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched a new border force.

Mike Masiapato, the commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), told us he was sending 400 newly trained officers to the border and procuring drones, body cams, and motorbikes to improve surveillance.

“I can assure you now that the current leadership of the country understands the criticality of this work.”

But even Mr Masiapato acknowledges it will take time to secure the country’s border.

“We have started to fortify the environment. Hopefully in [the] next few years we should be able to succeed.”

The country’s governing party, the African National Congress (ANC), may not have years.

After three decades in power, the ANC presides over a country in which power and water supplies are failing and whose citizens are plagued by record levels of unemployment and violent crime.

As South Africa lurches towards what polls predict will be a bruising election for the ANC, it is perhaps unsurprising that some political opponents – like the anti-migrant party Operation Dudula – openly blame migrants for the country’s woes.

And xenophobic rhetoric is rife, with migrants also blamed for taking jobs from locals.

Even President Ramaphosa has said that undocumented foreign nationals exacerbate South Africa’s social and economic problems

Other opposition parties are demanding stronger border controls, including ActionSA, which was formed four years ago by Herman Mashaba, an outspoken politician and former mayor of Johannesburg.

Texas woman with world’s longest legs reveals dating struggles

0

A Texas woman who has the world’s longest legs says there are serious setbacks to being super tall.

Maci Currin, 21, stands at 6 feet,10 inches, with both of her legs measuring more than 52 inches in length.

The world record holder says she’s subjected to cruel comments from strangers, while also struggling with dating and finding fitted pants for her legs.

“If someone is going to hate, they hate because they don’t understand,” Currin claimed in an interview with Jam Press. “[I’m] called horror movie characters, like Slenderman.”

Woman with world

The super-tall Texan shares videos on TikTok, where trolls often leave rude remarks about her appearance.

“That would be scary to see in a dark hallway,” one person wrote on a recent video of the content creator.

However, it’s not just strangers that treat Currin cruelly.

She told Jam Press that she always towers over her dates, leaving some of them feeling inadequate and “embarrassed.”

“All the times I’ve dated, especially with men that are shorter than me by a significant amount, has just felt off,” she stated. “Like they were almost embarrassed of me.”

Woman with world

In one TikTok clip, Currin claimed that men are reluctant to kiss her in public because of the height difference.

Finding clothes that fit is also an issue.

“I shop at American Tall mostly, although they don’t have any long pants that fit me,” she explained.

“I have to get them custom-made, which costs around $250 for one pair of jeans. I’m not made of money [so] I only have two pairs of jeans that fit me right.”

Currin says she hasn’t drawn the short end of the stick with her long legs, and loves being her height in spite of the setbacks.

“I hated my height [as a child] because it was the one thing kids could target me for,” she stated. “But the best perk would have to be that no one is like me. I am unique.”

Currin is now on a mission to encourage other similarly tall women to love themselves.

“As a 6 foot, 10inch female, my job is to empower other tall women,” she said.

Somalian refugee, 22, ‘strangles heavily pregnant girlfriend, 20, to death,’ also killing their unborn child’

0

A 22-year-old Somalian refugee has murdered his seven-month-pregnant girlfriend in a suspected honour killing, police in Sweden say.

Saga Forsgren Elneborg, 20, was found strangled to death with a lamp cord at home in the city of Örebro, which is two hours from the capital Stockholm.

Prosecutors claim that her boyfriend, Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim, a refugee from Somalia, killed her in April last year rather than face the shame of introducing the mother of his child to his Muslim family.

Somalian refugee, 22,
Saga’s family said via their lawyer that it had been a ‘long and painful wait’ of over a year before Ibrahim was charged for Saga’s murder a week ago. But is yet to be charged with the murder of his unborn child.

Police released a 1,000 page arrest report containing pictures of the cord and crime scene in the bedroom, where Saga’s body was found next to her bed, reportedly buried under a marble table top.

Prosecutors state that he grew up in a household that believed dating a ‘white’ woman is ‘not okay’ and that he ‘must date a woman of the same culture.

Because of this, he concealed the two-year relationship from his mother because she would not accept it.

Text messages between Saga and Ibrahim reveal that he had planned to tell his relatives about their relationship and baby on April 28, 2023, the night of Saga’s murder.

He expressed feeling nervous about telling them and wrote: ‘Feels like I can almost feel my heartbeat all the way down to my stomach.’

Saga then told him that ‘it will be fine’.

In a follow-up messaage, Saga asking him how it was going and for him to ‘talk to me’, remained unanswered.

State prosecutor Elisabeth Anderson alleges that Ibrahim then went to Saga’s flat, where he ‘violently’ strangled her to death with the cable of her bedside lamp, according to local outlet Aftonbladet.

Their baby boy, who weighed 1.7kg at the time and measured just 1.5ft from head to toe, also died inside Saga’s womb.

There is no evidence to suggest that Ibrahim’s family was either involved in Saga’s murder or that they asked for her to be killed, according to local media.

Further text messages between the Saga and her alleged killer revealed that Ibrahim tried to convince his girlfriend to have an abortion shortly after she got pregnant.

‘I know we can make it, but I won’t be able to keep my family. If it had been possible, there would have been no problem with keeping the child,’ he told her.

But Saga was excited about becoming a mother, telling him that she would have the baby, even without her boyfriend’s support, according to Anderson.

Despite her refusal to have the abortion he asked for, Ibrahim continued the relationship and planned for a future with Saga.

Anderson alleges that Ibrahim did not believe that his family would live ‘honourably’ if he had the baby with his girlfriend, but kept this from his girlfriend to not make her feel guilty and to not ‘make her take the baby away’.

The prosecutor also claims that Ibrahim’s DNA was found under Saga’s fingernails.

In the indictment, Anderson wrote: ‘Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim has killed Saga Forsgren Elneborg by suffocating and strangling her by means of pressure on her neck with an impact on the trachea and the blood supply to the head.’

She added in a press release: ‘I mean that the murder took place in an honour context because the man wanted to preserve or restore his and his family’s honour by killing the woman who was carrying his child.’

A picture of the crime scene in Saga’s bedroom shows a lovingly made crib right next to her bed, ready for the arrival of her baby son.

‘It has been and still is a difficult time for all [of] Saga’s relatives,’ said Elisabeth Massi Fritz, who represents Saga’s family.

‘The murder of Saga is a cruel and ruthless murder with an honour motive. There are many aggravating circumstances in the deed which we will highlight during the trial,’ Massi Fritz told Aftonbladet.

Ibrahim is due to go on trial for the murder on April 10, nearly a year after his girlfriend Saga was killed. The trial is expected to last 15 days.

He denies any wrongdoing and told police in an interrogation that he loved Saga and was still in disbelief over her death: ‘I have been in denial for nine months now.’

Dentist in the US jailed for 180 years after r@ping, sodomizing and abusing eight members of staff and his patients

0

A dentist in the US has been sentenced to 180 years in prison for raping, sodomizing, and sexually abusing eight members of his former staff and three patients from his dental office.

Joseph Clarence Cox, 44, was arrested in April 2021 following an investigation by the Gadsden Police Department, which revealed shocking evidence of improper sexual contact between Cox and his staff.

During the trial, a total of eight former employees and three patients testified to numerous incidents of sexual abuse, including rape, sodomy, and sexual contact during dental procedures.

After a week-long trial, the jury found him guilty of two counts of rape, two counts of sodomy, and eight counts of sexual abuse in January, according to ABC.

Cox treated his place of business as his ‘own personal playground’ and showed zero respect for any woman who came to his office, Judge George Day said.

Judge Day sentenced Cox to 25 years in prison for each count of rape and sodomy and 10 years for each count of sexual abuse. He ordered those sentences to run consecutively.

Cox, who started the Gadsden Dental Clinic in 2017 was arrested after officers found a large employee turnover within his business between June 2020 and April 2021.

Officers executed search warrants at both his home and the clinic on Rainbow Drive and took him into custody a week later.

Cox was later released after paying a $100,000 bond.

During the trial, his former employees testified that the large turnover at the Gadsden Dental Clinic was due to repeated incidents of sexual abuse by Cox.

Two former staff members stated that his behavior went beyond touching to rape and sodomy, with some incidents occurring during normal business hours.

Patients were subjected to sexual contact during their dental procedures, according to two of them who testified.

Years before he opened his dental practice in Gadsden, Cox had received complaints regarding sexual harassment and unwanted contact.

A former employee at his dental office in Fort Payne accused him of smacking her bottom in 2012.

Cox, who graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, pleaded guilty to three counts of harassment after appealing the case to circuit court, online records show.

He was fined $500, sentenced to probation, and his dental license was suspended for six months for those offenses at the time.

In court earlier this year, Judge Day ordered his sentences to be run consecutively, stating that it would not be justice for each of the victims if the sentences were concurrent.

FRED M’MEMBE DOES NOT OWE ANY BANK ANY MONEY

…It is a malicious falsehood by a desperate, corrupt regime…

Lusaka, Thursday, April 4, 2024

As pressure increases on the incompetent and corrupt UPND regime, they have resorted to a desperate smear campaign aimed at peddling malicious lies in order to intimidate and tarnish the reputation of those who are exposing their failures, grand corruption, and abuse of power, such as Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe.

One such lie is the claim that Dr. M’membe owes the Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ) a substantial amount of money in the form of an unpaid loan. This baseless lie is not only laughable but also reflects the mounting pressure that Dr. M’membe’s solid and well-researched checks and balances are placing on the desperate, incompetent, and corrupt puppet regime of Hakainde Hichilema.

However, these kindergarten propaganda tactics targeting Dr. M’membe and the issues surrounding DBZ and Zambian Airways will not succeed. Dr. M’membe does not owe any bank or state-owned company any money in his individual capacity. If that were the case, the increasingly unpopular UPND regime would have wasted no time in hauling him before the courts of law to humiliate him, as it has become their habit. However, there is no record of any such case in any court.

Zambians are not fools; they understand that this is merely part of the ongoing smear campaign against the SP president. For the record, Dr. M’membe was not party to Zambian Airways’ indebtedness to the DBZ. The condition set by DBZ for granting a loan of US$3 million to the airline’s shareholders was to raise equity of US$3 million. The shareholders made a commitment to fulfill this condition, and the airline was consequently advanced the full amount of US$3 million. The plain truth, deliberately hidden by the desperate UPND regime, is that, in an effort to meet this condition, the shareholders of Zambian Airways approached several institutions for investment. The Post Newspapers Limited invested US$3 million, and Seaboard, an American company that owned National Million Plc, contributed US$2 million, bringing the total to US$5 million. This amount exceeded the US$3 million required by DBZ for the loan. As a result of this investment, the Post Newspapers Limited received 25 percent of the airline’s shares, while Seaboard acquired 12 percent.

These records are available at DBZ for anyone who wishes to verify them. Shortly after these transactions were completed, fuel prices dramatically increased, resulting in financial difficulties for many airlines worldwide. Consequently, numerous airlines faced financial challenges, and Zambian Airways was put into receivership by its directors. To be clear, Zambian Airways remains in receivership. In light of these facts, any honest person should ask what wrong Dr. M’membe has committed in this situation. In fact, a Supreme Court judgment has specifically ruled against including Dr. M’membe in Zambian Airways’ indebtedness to DBZ.

Therefore, it is nothing but ignorance and malice to bring up the issue of Zambian Airways’ debt to DBZ against Dr. M’membe at this time. Rather than wasting time and resources peddling such baseless lies, the failed and corrupt UPND regime should address the growing public anger resulting from its failure to fulfill campaign promises and its contribution to the unbearable cost of living for the majority of Zambians.

´Show us the Memo from Attorney General´ on Mopani transaction Kalaba dares Chipoka- Harry Kalaba

´Show us the Memo from Attorney General´
…on Mopani transaction Kalaba dares Chipoka

04.04.24

Harry Kalaba, the leader of Citizen´s First has challenged Chipoka Mulenga, the Minister of Commer and Trade to provide evidence showing that the Attorney General of Zambia Kabesha Mulilo ´okayed´ the illegal sale or transfer of 51 pc shares of Zambia in Mopani Copper Mines to the Dubai based company International Resources Holdings (IRH).

Kalaba was reacting to an interview Mulenga had on KBNTV Wednesday where he said the “Attorney General, Solicitor General and Finance Minister” are privy to the controversial sale of the 51 pc shares without passing the transaction via the National assembly of Zambia as required per Article 210 of the country´s constitution.

“What we know is that a state of huge value such a mining company must be greenlighted by parliament via a two thirds majority,” Kalaba, a former legislator said, “we know that this did not happen and if that did not happen the AG as the chief legal advisor of the government must have signed it off from what hon. Mulenga said, the AG is fully aware of this transaction so we challenge him to show the Zambian public who own this asset to show us the AG´s consent to the transaction.”

Kalaba said “if the AG did not sign off this transaction, then it renders it illegal subject to court action and immediate reversal and sanctions against against whoever sold this jewel in the crown of our nation. We need the evidence in form of a memo by the AG to support Mr Mulenga´s claim on KBNTV.”

The offloading of a 51pc stake in MCM has engulfed the Zambian and international media space as private lawyers and opposition members of parliament seek answers as to whether President Hakainde Hichilema´s government committed an offence in selling the shares of the company to a firm that was only registered in 2022 against the laws of Zambia.

Mulenga, alongside his Mines Ministry counterpart Kabuswe have visited almost all media houses in Zambia and pleaded that contrary to popular belief allegedly fuelled by the opposition, “the 51 pc shares have not been sold they have “only been transferred” to an ´equity partner´ in the name of IRH but no evidence has been proffered to the Zambian public.

Lusaka lawyer Celestine Mukandila has commenced legal action to establish whether the ´sale´ is legal or not while attempts by the Zambian parliament to discuss the matter have been thwarted after an ´urgent matter´ on the same issue was raised by Chilubi Island legislator Mulenga Fube in parliament.

Kalaba, a leading member of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) said the Hichilema government must be held accountable for constitutional breaches before they sell off the entire country and take Zambia back to the stone age of lawlessness.

“We have been a country of laws from independence almost 60 years ago but now we are dangerously sliding into anarchy being perpetrated by an arrogant government, as opposition we shall not allow this…show us the AG´s consent to sell our shares in the mine and we shall keep quite it is as simple as that. Stop taking Zambians for granted,” Kalaba said.

Kalaba said the list of constitutional breaches on President Hichilema´s watch keep rising since he assumed office starting from the signing up of an electric vehicle supply chain deal with the United States and Congo, the bringing on board of the US American combatant mission in Zambia AFRICOM, the return of debt-ridden Vedanta to Konkola Copper Mines and now IRH with MCM.

“When will the illegalities stop while Zambians wallow in poverty as the Hichilema government pawns its assets for a song, including crucial basics such as 1,4 million tons of maize that have now left us in a position where we have to import the same maize at a higher prize as six million Zambians face starvation,” said Kalaba.
Kalaba asked the government to, “please explain when a ´sell is a sell´ to calm Zambians.”

Although Zambia is Africa´s second largest producer of copper, 64 pc of its population live in abject poverty prompting news outlets such as the Financial Times to call it a “mineral rich dirt-poor country” under President Hichilema.

The sixth President of Zambia Mr Edgar Lungu made moves to have Zambia own a stake in the copper mines that have been swiftly reversed by his successor President Hichilema amidst protests from the opposition and civil society.

OASIS FORUM RELAUNCHED, DEMANDS FOR CONSTITUTION MAKING PROCESS ROADMAP

0

During an event held at the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) in Lusaka, a consortium of prominent organizations, including the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), the Non-Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC), and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), formerly Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC), convened to announce the re-launch of the Oasis Forum. This forum, initially established in 2001, has been resurrected to advance constitutionalism, the rule of law, and good governance in the Republic of Zambia.

The re-launched Oasis Forum reaffirms the enduring commitment of these organizations to uphold constitutional principles and contribute to national development. Recognizing the pivotal role of constitutionalism, rule of law, and good governance in fostering the welfare of Zambian citizens, the consortium believes that continued collaboration in defending these values is indispensable.

The absence of a durable constitution that reflects the collective aspirations of Zambians has been a longstanding concern for the Oasis Forum. Despite being a signatory to various international treaties, Zambia lacks an expanded bill of rights in its Republican Constitution. The consortium stresses the importance of guaranteeing rights that uplift the living standards of all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable groups.

The Oasis Forum expresses dismay over the lack of a clear roadmap from the current government regarding the constitution-making process. Emphasizing the rule of law as the cornerstone of democracy, the consortium advocates for inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in governance. While applauding the enactment of the Access to Information Law to enhance transparency, the forum calls for greater representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in governance structures.

The Oasis Forum reaffirms its commitment to advocating for constitutionalism, the rule of law, and good governance in Zambia. The consortium pledges to collaborate, advocate, and take lawful actions to ensure the country’s adherence to these fundamental principles. Furthermore, the forum demands a clear roadmap, including a standalone national referendum, to integrate the expanded bill of rights into the Republican Constitution.

CANCELATION OF OVER 2, 500 MINING LICENSES BY GOVT WORRIES ESMAZ

….wonders who the government wants to give these licenses to

Lufwanyama… Thursday April 4, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

The Emeralds and Semi – Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has expressed concern following a decision by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development to cancel over 2, 500 mining licenses for small scale miners.

Association President Victor Kalesha wonders who the government wants to give these licenses to.

Mr Kalesha said this is worrying because some officers at the Ministry wants to give these licenses to foreign companies at the expense of the local people.

“We are extremely worried at the overzealous officers st the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development especially cadastre department who are disadvantaging Zambians in the threats that have been going on all the times trying to dig out certain laws that will have them grab mining licenses from the Zambians. It is very unfortunate because currently, it seems people are geared in wanting to exert pressure on the Republican President or the UPND government by bringing in issues that are contentious and make people react in a way that everything heads towards State House,” he told Smart Eagles.

“It is obvious that there are officers in those offices who ill advise government on certain statutory requirements that needs engagement. We are worried if they are able to rise up and say they are canceling 2000 plus licenses for Zambians and who do they want to give them to? This is worrying because, we know that some officers are geared in wanting to give these licenses to foreign investors or foreign companies.”

Mr Kalesha said it is confusing because when President Hichilema visited Lufwanyama last year, he made it clear that he wanted these licenses to be given to Zambian companies.

In accordance with Section 72 of the Mines and Minerals Development Act No. 1 1 of 2015, 2, 605 mining and non-mining rights were cancelled by the Mining Licensing Committee (MLC) at its 78th meeting for non-compliance to conditions of grant of the mining and non-mining rights which were clearly highlighted in the default notices that were circulated on 24th October, 2023 and did not take remedial measures to the satisfaction of the Committee.

Kenyan gospel singer Justina Syokau confesses resorting to adult movies to salvage failing marriage

0

Gospel singer Justina Syokau recently revealed details about her previous marriage, attributing its breakdown to issues of infidelity.

In an interview with Obinna, Syokau revealed that she quickly entered into her marriage after only a few months of dating her now ex-husband.

She emphasized that she lost her virginity shortly after the wedding, having entered the marriage as a virgin.

Justina openly addressed the struggles within her marriage, including her efforts to salvage it by watching and learning from adult films in a desperate attempt to to add excitement to their bedroom.

“Mimi p*rno ya kwanza kuwatch nimewatch nikiwa married, kwa nini? I watched to see maybe sijui style ju nimeokoka hii miaka yote. Maybe sijui style ya kumpea,” said the singer.

Loosely translated: (The first adult film I watched was while I was married, why? I watched to see, maybe, I don’t know a certain style because I’ve been saved all these years. Maybe, I don’t know a style to please him)

The singer said she found no solution in this approach, describing the adult content as unappealing and ineffective in addressing their issues.

“It was not even sweet. The way they were looking it was not even interesting. When you are married and you see infidelity in your marriage you usually think maybe humpei vizuri(you’re not pleasing him),” said Justina.

Domestic Abuse

In a past interview, the praise and worship singer also identified violence and disrespect as another reason for the dissolution of her marriage.

“Apart from constant beating, he often humiliated me in front of his family. He would disappear for days and leave me with no money for food. He always consulted his mother and followed her instructions. I had no voice in the family even though I was the wife,” she said as quoted by Standard.

Justina said the financial neglect and emotional humiliation she endured reached a breaking point that forced her to leave her home with her newborn child.

The aftermath of her departure presented challenges, including homelessness and health complications, and a lack of support from family.

“It was too much to bear. I had to leave my home. I was out in the cold with my two-week-old baby. Since I had delivered through cesarean, I could not walk for long distances. I had lost a lot of blood. I remember getting an infection on the streets,” said Justina.

Cassper Nyovest got bodyguards after feeling ‘unsafe because of threats’

0

South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has admitted that he had to hire bodyguards at one point recently, as he feared for his life due to threats he was receiving.

In November 2022, Nyovest, saw one his close associates, DJ Sumbody, gunned down in a hail of bullets, as he was killed execution style in a suspected hit in Johannesburg.

In addition, Nyovest saw one of his adversaries, AKA, also die under similar circumstances in Durban only a few months later.

Posting on X, Nyovest said that only the decision to take his Christian faith seriously again had saved him, as he was now drowning in the pits of depression and fear.

“I would like to declare yet again, that Jesus Christ is the sole reason for my life being spared and fruitful. Through many situations, he saved me and he keeps saving me. It’s only by God’s grace that I’m alive and in my right mind. Thank you Jesus!” he said.

“I went through so much in the past two years. Mentally, I was drained and I was burnt out. I felt unsafe because of threats, even got bodyguards. Was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

“I really couldn’t see the light and I couldn’t control my mind at some point, I ran to Jesus and he healed me. I would like to say. Thank you Jesus! You are my lord and saviour!”

Towards the end of 2023, Nyovest revealed that he was embarking on a new path as a born-again Christian. The rapper even underwent a highly publicised baptism ceremony. On social media, Nyovest, has not been shy to share his Christian journey.

“A lot of people have been asking me why I’m quiet and what’s going on. Just to give you a summary. I went through a reset and I realised what life is, and [what my] my purpose in this life [is].

“I’m not ashamed to say that my soul was washed by the blood of Jesus. I’m not ashamed of the gospel and I will be unpacking more and more as time goes,” he posted.

Kidnapped Zimbabwean businessman still missing in South Africa – despite payment of R1,5m ransom

Police in South Africa have opened investigations into the disappearance of Durban based Zimbabwean businessman Evans Katumba, after his kidnappers failed to release him despite the payment of a R1.5m ransom.

Katumba, who reportedly relocated to South Africa a decade ago, was reportedly kidnapped by AK47 wielding assailants at a nightspot that he had recently bought on 24 March.

According to ZimLive, after Katumba’s disappearance last month, his kidnappers had demanded a R2,5 million ransom. His family and friends reportedly then put together 1,5 million, which they were supposed to drop just in Ballito, a coastal town near Durban.

However, while the drop was made, the kidnappers did not release Katumba as promised.

“They demanded that one person should bring the money, and that police should not be involved. The money was dropped at an open field on the outskirts of Ballito, about 45 minutes from Durban.

“The kidnappers said they would release him after an hour, but that was the last communication they made,” a friend said.

SA Police and crack unit, The Hawks, are now reportedly investigating the matter.

Katumba, a fuel station worker turned fuel supplier, was reportedly the target of an attempted hijacking in December. His plan to acquire Yugo, the nightclub from where he was snatched, is said to have put him in the crosshairs of some unsavoury characters in Durban.

Yugo is one of the clubs that late rapper AKA was supposed to perform in before he was slain last year.

“A week after he bought Yugo, there was an attempt to hijack him while driving his G63. He was stopped by a police car and an officer came to talk to him, before returning to the police car purportedly to check something.

“While Vardy waited for the officer to come back, suddenly there were these random people trying to open the doors and he sped away,” a friend told ZimLive.

“He went to the United Kingdom and came back in early March to begin rebranding his club. Around the same time he also bought a Ferrari and an Amarok.

“He kept on receiving phone calls from people saying he must hire them as security and some saying he is a foreigner and can’t own a club in Durban. You have all these people from the underworld wanting a piece of it, some saying can we work with you, can we partner with you or can we do this or that.

“He was adamant that he would do everything his own way and that’s what he did. Some of us got concerned and we told him that his profile now requires that he has security at all times, but he decided against it.”

FOR ONCE LET’S BE HAPPY AS A COUNTRY – KABUSWE

April 03 2024

LUSAKA – Mines and Minerals development minister Paul Kabuswe has noted with concern the continued and sustained proganda aimed at casting shadows on the recent celebrated Partnership between Mopani Copper Mines[MCM] a ZCCM-IH subsidiary and investment Resources Holding [IRH] of Abudabi which saw the relaunch of operations at MCM by the Republican President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Kabuswe called on Zambians to celebrate the scores in the mining towns of Kitwe and Mufurila for the gains in Mopani as opposed to perpetuating negative sentiments that have no benefits to Zambians.

“For once let’s be happy as a country even as we are grappling with issues of electricity and drought, a good thing as been done that is worth celebrating.

He said the partnership between Mopani and IRH benefiting families in Kitwe and other towns amd should not be downplayed by negative sentiments.

Responding to a question from a radio caller[Mr Mwale] who wanted to find out among others, why according to him, a gulf stream was used to pick up investors from Abudabi to Ndola,

Mr Kabuswe called on Zambians to desist from embracing propaganda and rumors aimed at discrediting positive gains in the country.

“Lets get the facts right. The gulf stream has never been used, when IRH came into the country they used their plane but our collegeaus who always want to throw negative took a picture of it[the plane] and used photoshop to put a Zambia airforce logo on it, which so bad! you can see the extent they are going in trying to making the President look bad.

He says there is need for sincerity and factual communication among citizens adding that people should not look to thrive through negative publicity.

“This is a time to be happy
we have brought an invest in Mopani,
miners a being paid well, suppliers and contractors are being paid, money has come in the country.
Mopani was like Glencoe being riddled with issues which is not the case now.
Mopani is a free asset we have a partner with IRH at 49 51 as a joint venture
Our people are the ones running Mopani.” Explains Kabuswe

AN eight months old baby has become a double orphan after its 44-year-old father of Lusaka’s Meanwood Phase One area took his life after allegedly strangling and stabbing his 35-year-old wife.

According to authorities Mike Ilishebo, a banker, used an electric power cord to strangle Valarie Franco whom he later stabbed her in the stomach and consumed poison after the act.

The couple, reportedly had a troubled marriage since their marriage last April.

They leave behind an eight months old baby as revealed by sources.

Police say the incident happened yesterday afternoon between 15:00 hours and 16:00 hours.

After strangling her Ilishebo grabbed a Knife and stabbed his once upon beloved wife in the stomach to finish the job he started.

Without mercy for his own life and with intentions of escaping justice, Ilishebo went to their living room and took a poisonous substance, that resulted to his own demise.

The matter was then reported to Chelston Police Station, through Ndeke-vorna Police Post on the same day Alice Mapulanga, 38 of Chalala Hill view area compound.

Upon receiving the report, Police immediately rushed to the scene and found Franco’s lifeless body lying down in the bedroom with a knife embedded in her abdomen.

While the Ilishebo’s body was found in the sitting room, with evidence of black poisonous substance coming out his mouth.

VICE PRESIDENT VISITS KANAKANTAPA RESETTLEMENT

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has called on Zambians to ensure that the relief food being distributed to drought affected areas is shared equally.

Mrs. Nalumango said that the government is doing everything possible to implement relief measures in an effort to ensure that people do not go hungry.

Mrs. Nalumango said this in Chongwe District when she visited Kanakantapa resettlement scheme and surrounding areas to inspect the effects of the droughts on farming activities in the area.

She expressed concern upon learning that Northern Chongwe has recorded 100 percent crop failure due to the prevailing droughts.

ZANIS reports that the Vice President assured that the government will do everything necessary to assist the farmers affected and households with food.

The Vice President stated that the government is working with financial institutions among other stakeholders for resource mobilisation to support the farmers who have been affected by the droughts.

“Government is aware of the unfortunate situation and has not neglected you, this is why I am here to assess the situation in order to see how people can be helped without so that they do not go hungry,” Mrs. Nalumango said.

The Vice President also inspected a water reservoir that has been non-functional since 2007.

She stressed the need for the reservoir to be worked so that it can be used for irrigation farming.

Mrs. Nalumango noted that once operational the water reservoir will be an answer to the climate related challenges that farmers are facing and can also be used for winter farming.

She further called for support in irrigation and energy so that farmers are able to drive sustainable farming.

And the Vice President urged farmers to diversify by also farming climate resilient crops such as cassava.

A young farmer, Anderson Phiri, of Chongwe District in Kanakantapa resettlement area bemoaned the loss incurred due to the droughts.

Mr Phiri explained that he was expecting to produce over 2000 by 50 kilogram bags of maize from a 7 Hector’s rented farm, but the devastating effects of climate changed his odds.

And Peter Chileshe, a disabled beneficiary of resettlement land thanked the government for helping his family with settlement land where he now undertakes various income generation activities.

Mr Chileshe is also a beneficiary of the Social Cash Transfer and Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) that has improved his livelihood.

He urged Zambians to remain united especially during the period when the country is hit with effects of climate change.

ACC LAUNCHES THE ONLINE ANONYMOUS WHISTLEBLOWER SYSTEM (OAWS)

Highlights from the launch of the online anonymous Whistleblower System (OAWS) at Mulungushi International Conference Center by the Minister of Justice Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, MP

✅ Whistleblower System (OAWS) guarantees Whistleblowers with high level of data security, confidentiality, real time communication and feedback. Through this system, Whistleblowers will be able to blow the whistle anonymously without being identified or seen by anyone.

✅ The system is secure to an extent that not even an officer from the Anti-Corruption Commission will be able to know who has reported a matter through the system. That’s how locked this system is and the power of technology.

✅ Zambia is party to international laws, and has domesticated the protection of Whistleblowers through the Public Interest Disclosure (Protection of Whistleblowers) ACT NO. 4 OF 2010.

ADVANTAGES

✅ The Whistleblower has the luxury of using their own gadget in the comfort of their home or office and make a report to the commission on any suspected corrupt practices.

✅ Once that report is made, the system will generate a reference number or tracking number for the Whistleblower.

✅ With this reference or tracking number, the Whistleblower will be able to use it to interact and make follow ups on any progress related to their report in subsequent log-ins on the platform.

✅ As such, the Whistleblower will use the reference number to log-in, check on progress or ask question related to their submission or indeed add more information to their report.

✅ With an online system, high levels of data security, confidentiality, timely communication and feedback with the Whistleblower are guaranteed.

✅ Further, an online based Whistleblowing system will enable all stakeholders to easily access the link via the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) website and Facebook page.

✅ Government has placed the fight against corruption top on its agenda and one way to achieve this, is by ensuring that all suspected cases of corruption are quickly brought to the attention of law enforcement agencies and action taken in an efficient and timely manner.

✅ Government is therefore, elated with this innovation by the ACC, which will encourage more people to get involved in the anti-corruption fight. The Government is also grateful to the European Union under the EU-twining project, for the technical support rendered in developing this system.

EU Delegation

✅ The European Union provided about € 40,000 Euros for the implementation of this project.

✅ Zambia is the first country in Africa to have a Whistleblower system that meets the strict requirements of the EU Whistleblower directive.

Zambians watch your national assets all sorts of excuses will be used for their disposal including reported losses- Amb Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb Emmanuel Mwamba
Zambians watch your national assets all sorts of excuses will be used for their disposal including reported losses.
President Hakainde Hichilema as IDC Chairperson, instead of protecting the assets and placing them on good strategic business performance will instead promote their privatization(LCM and Mopani Copper Mine) or liquidation as seen in the sad cases of DBZ and INVESTRUST Banks.

Thirteen Industrial Development Corperation (IDC) subsidiaries incurred losses amounting to over K1.8 billion in 2022.

The same companies also incurred losses amounting to over K746 million in 2021.

This is as revealed by the Report of the Auditor-General on the Accounts of Parastatal Bodies and other Statutory Institutions for the financial year ended December, 31, 2022.

The report highlighted that out of the 30 State-Owned Enterprises in which IDC holds 62.28 percent to 100 percent shareholding, only five declared dividends amounting to K61, 334, 600 and K62, 012, 587 in 2021 and 2022.

“During the period under review, it was observed that 13 subsidiary companies incurred losses amounting to K746, 984, 000 and K1, 854, 902, 817 in 2021 and 2022 respectively,” the report showed.

It also revealed that as at September 30, 2023, the IDC had not produced audited consolidated financial statements for the years December, 31, 2018 to 2022 and no sanctions were meted out on institutions that delayed in preparing their financial statements.

In addition, the report noted that eight State-Owned Enterprises had not produced audited financial statements for the financial years December, 31, 2020, 2021 and 2022 as at September, 30, 2023.

This is “Contrary to the provision of section 72 (2) (e) of the Public Procurement Act of 2020, IDC did not obtain clearance from the Attorney-General for three contracts,” it stated.

The IDC did not provide clearance for the contracts for construction of fruit processing plant in Mwinilunga and Katete Districts at a contract sum of K62, 006, 153 which were revised by K85, 340, 834, to K147, 346, 987.

Under the report, it was noted that IDC did not also get clearance for the contract for the construction of the Tomato Processing Plant and associated works at Fig Tree in Chisamba District of Central Province at a fixed contract sum of US$4, 644, 508.66.

It was also noted that clearance for the contract was not obtained for the rehabilitation of Mukuba Hotel in Ndola District in the Copperbelt Province at a contract price of K18, 250, 654.82.

“During the period under review, the IDC had leases out for properties located in Lusaka, Ndola and Mongu however, a review of rent statements of accounts revealed that rentals in amounts totalling K5,001,895 for the period from January 2021 to December 2022 had not been collected as at September, 30,2023,” the report highlighted.

ZUMANI HAS LOST IT, ECL MUST STOP HIM BEFORE HE BREAKS THE UNITY IN UKA

0

KBN TV EDITORIAL: ZUMANI HAS LOST IT, ECL MUST STOP HIM BEFORE HE BREAKS THE UNITY IN UKA

As a media house, we play in the domain of information and it’s our role to offer unbiased positions in the interest of promoting democracy, national unity and plural politics.

We have seen and read a very long and misplaced political argument from Chris Zumani Zimba, who in our view is expected to know better the fast changing political dynamics in our country including the synergy and power of regional blocks.

We call his article misplaced because it is injurious to the collective wisdom and intelligence of the UKA Council of Presidents who have laid aside their party interests to galvanize Zambians into a formidable force that can face the UPND in 2026.

Zambians will recall that Zumani was a fierce critic of ECL but in a grand chess master move, ECL appointed him as his Political Advisor, turning a foe into a friend.

It was a very unexpected turn of events that turned the Zumani world around. To date, he still doesn’t know how to pay back the gratitude of being appointed to such a lofty position as political advisor to the President. He would do anything to promote ECL even at the expense of national interest!

While Zumani may mean well, but his personal ambition to walk the corridors of power once again is blinding his political judgement which in turn is putting ECL in an awkward position.

First of all, everyone knows that Zumani is regarded as ECL’s boy and he can’t write something so close to the heart of his former boss without seeking prior approval.

There in lies a very huge and complex problem because ECL has made it abundantly clear that he is not going to seek re-election in 2026 unless of course he is playing politics of double standards.

But at this stage, we can not fault ECL who has told his UKA colleagues of his desire to play a unifying role to ensure political parties involved in the Alliance, may at an appropriate time, choose one among them to represent the will of the people in the next poll.

While ECL is doing a commendable job as a father figure and king maker of the next President, Zumani like a few MPs and some members of the PF Central Committee are trying to force ECL back into the ring and lobbying for him to ditch UKA out of their personal selfish ambitions.

We regard the sentiments by Zumani as being selfish because they smell of unfounded fear that without ECL on the ballot, he and a few of his colleagues might not walk back into the corridors of power. So let’s be very clear here, this is not about ECL, it’s about selfish individuals who are posturing their relevance to the power of the ECL brand.

We may not entirely blame Zumani and the clique he is representing. We must blame the UKA leadership for slowly turning itself into a talking shop when the nation is expecting them to provide leadership that will begin to see members of PF, CF, FDD, ULP, GP and NDC as one family.

The UKA leadership may have a good strategy about how they intend to assimilate and absorb all party structures of member political parties countrywide to form an unstoppable electoral force. However, instead of embarking on a countrywide sensitisation tour as we recently saw in the statement leased by their Communication Chairperson, Jackson Silavwe, UKA is busy sharing photos of their meetings, which photos are not helping anyone when the biggest opposition PF is pushing a contrary agenda to theirs.

To succeed, UKA needs PF and if the Alliance is going to be meaningful, PF too needs the rest of the other parties. Perhaps what PF doesn’t realize is that they are the number one target by the ruling UPND to dismantle before the 2026 elections. UPND is totally resolved to ensure PF is dissimated and reduced to a shadow of itself before 2026.

For the record, no one can dispute the popularity of ECL. He remains so popular that even if elections were to be called today, he would win if the environment was free, fair and transparent.

But as long as Miles Sampa remains a UPND project and the case of legitimacy still in the courts of law, PF can hire all the lawyers in the country, that case will still remain where it is as long as the judiciary, Parliament and the Police Command remains under the remote control of UPND led executive.

It appears that PF doesn’t want to learn lessons from the 2026 rehearsal that happened in Kwacha, Kabushi and most recently in Ndola and Kitwe where every trick was unleashed for UPND aligned councillors to win.

PF must also realize that the debate has moved from the argument around eligibility of ECL to stand. We hear unconfirmed reports that the presidential nomination form may now ask candidates to state if they have been sworn in more than once as a precondition for participating in the 2026 elections.

If this information is true, it doesn’t require rocket science to figure out who they are targeting. Therefore, Zumani and a few MPs as well as some MCC who are opposed to any other person running on the UKA ticket must vacate their positions and start mobilizing for UKA so they can be adopted as they remain an important integral part of the 2026 push.

Instead of insulting the intelligence of ECL and UKA by casting aspersions on Mulusa, Zumani must know that UKA needs Northwestern and Western Province. You don’t need a party, you need an entire region!

HOW MEANWOOD ZULU GRABBED INVESTRUST BANK FROM FRIDAY NDLHOVU

By Zambian Watchdog (21 June 2015)

HOW MEANWOOD ZULU GRABBED INVESTRUST BANK FROM FRIDAY NDLHOVU

For 20 years, Friday Ndhlovu did everything in his name, powers, skills and knowledge to raise Investrust, an indigenous bank from nothing.
Sadly, Friday Ndhlovu is now languishing at some farm after Robinson ‘Meanwood’ Zulu and Rupiah Banda grabbed his bank, which he has suffered to create and build to its current international status.

After working as Managing Director for ZANACO, Friday Ndhlovu in 1995 founded Investrust Merchant Bank. He was the executive chairman, meaning he was the head of the board and management. This is how most emerging companies are run.

But in 2000, as the company grew, he relinquished his dual role by giving up the position of board chairperson. He became the managing director. Dr Justine B Zulu took over as chairman. The bank continued to grow in assets and branch network.

As a Public Limited Company, the bank listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange in 2007. Earlier in 2002, the bank had changed its name from Investrust Merchant to Investrust Bank PLC.

Being listed on the Stock Exchange meant that members of the public could purchase shares in the company. That is how Robinson Zulu of Meanwood and Rupiah Banda came in the picture.

By April this year, Meanwood Zulu by himself and through other agents had acquired enough shares in the bank to push out the founder and formerly majority shareholder Friday Ndhlovu.

So on May 1, 2015, Friday Ndhlovu was kicked out as managing director of Investrust.

He was replaced by no other than Richard Chembe, an associate, confidante and former economic advisor for Rupiah Banda during his short, corruption filled presidency. Even Dr Justine B Zulu was removed as chairman and replaced by Dr. Jacob. M. Mwanza.
It was Dr Mwanza who announced the dismissal of the bank’s legitimate owner and founder .

In April, a source close to the case told the Watchdog that, ‘There has been a corporate “coup” at Investrust Bank resulting in major shareholder Friday Ndhlovu losing his job of CEO.

It is said that the instigator of the move was a once trusted friend and confidant of Mr. Ndhlovu, Robinson Zulu of Meanwood Investments. The latter has over the recent past been scooping up Investrust Bank shares on the LuSE thus amassing up to 20% stake in the bank. The move has been justified on basis of Investrust’s poor financial results in the last two years. However, what is interesting is how Zulu whose Meanwood Financial Services business has been struggling and may soon lose its license can throw mad at Friday Ndhlovu. Mr. Ndhlovu has been replaced by Dr. Richard Chembe, former Economic Advice to RB.

The source further said:
‘Apparently, the real reason behind Ndhlovu’s firing has been a settlement of old scores. Mr. Ndhlovu as Chairman of the LuSE Board is said to have influenced the Board not to renew the contract of Beatrice Nkanza, who was LuSE CEO before Brian Tembo.
‘ Now, Beatrice Nkanza is the older sister to Womba Kamuhuza Zulu the wife to Robinson Zulu.

‘As one of the major shareholders Robinson has a seat on the Investrust Board, which proxy is Eddie Samakai a brother to his wife. However, recently Robinson Zulu has been pushing for a second seat which was supposed to be given to Beatrice Nkanza. Ndhlovu together with other major shareholders have resisted this move as they all have only one seat each.’

That is how Friday Ndhlovu lost his job and the bank he built from nothing. He is now an old man and it is doubtful that he still has enough energy to start up something or get another job. But Meanwood Zulu is smiling, enjoying all the sweat of Friday Nhdlovu for 20 years. SOURCE: Zambian Watchdog

BOWMAN LUSAMBO’S ‘OBED KASONGO’ CASE IS HIGHLY POLITICAL – WITNESSES TELL COURT

BOWMAN LUSAMBO’S ‘OBED KASONGO’ CASE IS HIGHLY POLITICAL – WITNESSES TELL COURT

Three witnesses in the case in which Bowman Lusambo is in court for assaulting and wounding two NDC officials during the Roan by election in 2019 have testified that the case is politically motivated and orchestrated by Home Affairs PS Joseph Akafumba.

In court testimonies before Luanshya Resident Magistrate Penstone Chiluba delivered from March 22nd-25th 2024, the witnesses stated that the plot to implicate Mr. Lusambo was hatched by Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Joseph Akafumba in November 2021.

This is in a matter in which Mr. Lusambo is accused of assaulting one Mary Musonda and wounding a Mr. Mathews Musukwa both of Mpatamatu Township in separate incidents, during the April, 11th, 2019, Roan Parliamentary by-election.

The duo is alleged to have been attacked during a campaign trail along with NDC National Youth Chairman Obed Kasongo who died a month later.

But Frank Chiona who was at the time NDC Copperbelt Provincial Youth Chairman and in charge of training election agents during the by election testified that Mr. Lusambo was not present during the fracas.

Now a Member of the NDC National Governing Council, Frank Chiona who was the second defence witness said three people among them late Obed Kasongo, Roan Constituency Vice Chairman Stanley Musukwa, NDC Lusaka based Member Wlyson Phiri and the Driver, a Mr. Ganaton Mwila were attacked by PF cadres around 05 Hours in Ngebe Ward near Mpatamatu.

Chiona added that the entire case was brought to court at the instigation of Home Affairs P.S Joseph Akafumba shortly after the PF lost power in August 2021.

“As NDC, we were in an Alliance with the UPND and Mr Akafumba was our Vice President. When the attack happened around 04 Hours that morning, PF cadres used wood sticks to attack us and confiscated our small black bag accusing us of hiding offensive weapons there. Only Wlyson (Phiri) and Mr. Obed (Kasongo) reported the matter to Mpatamatu Police because they were visibly injured. When we arrived at the Police Station that was the first time we first saw Mr. Lusambo telling the Police to immediately take the injured to the Police” Chiona testified.

Chiona recounted that in November 2021, some Police officers from Lusaka came and approached him and his colleagues to file a complaint against Mr Lusambo but that they refused.

He however stated that Mr. Musukwa and his lover, Mary Musonda agreed to change their earlier statement to implicate Mr. Lusambo in their new complaint.

The three witnesses all testified that Mr. Musukwa in the process was awarded undisclosed amounts of cash which has been used to build a House in Independence Avenue in Lusaka and buy vehicles.

“Akafumba approached us and promised K250, 000 and jobs to ensure Bowman is convicted. As Christians we refused because Bowman was nowhere near the scene of the crime and it was going to be unfair to convict an innocent man,” said Chiona.

He said he is convinced beyond doubt that that the House Mr. Musukwa has built at the junction of Independence and 6th Street was funded using the proceeds from Mr. Akafumba’s offer.

“There is a three bedroom flat and a house and they are now all now completed. The plot was given to him when he was PF Councillor for Ngebe Ward in 2007and he failed to develop until 2022 when Mr. Akafumba made the offer.”

Chiefs join debt restructuring deal celebrations

Chiefs join debt restructuring deal celebrations

IT seems no one wants to be the odd one out by frowning when many voices of reason in the country are smiling, thanks to the debt restructuring that has been completed by the UPND government.

Unlike merely royally moving around with their instruments of power, usually a whisker of whatever mammal, and being saluted by a dedicated retainer, the esteemed chiefs have joined the band of those who are smiling, for Zambia has restructured the terms of debt repayment.

The hard-to-ignore news about debt restructuring has gone near and far, and cascaded from top-notch executives in sky-scrapers to marketeers, welders, bus drivers and their passengers, fuel attendants, teachers, politicians and name them.

Everyone has their perspective – usually a merry one.

The news has now made it to chiefs’ palaces, and House of Chiefs chairperson Chief Chisunka says the just sealed debt restructuring deal is a positive step towards achieving sustainable development in the country and improving the lives of citizens.

Adding the voice of chiefs to the milestone achievement by the UPND government, Chief Chisunka of the Ushi people of Mansa congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema and his team.

The chief said the debt restructuring agreement marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s economic recovery journey.

Chief Chisunka said the reduction of the country’s debt burden through negotiated repayment terms will, without doubt, provide the much needed relief to the country’s economy, thereby creating a more stable financial environment that is conducive for growth and development.

“As traditional leaders, we recognise the importance of sound economic policies and initiatives that promote sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of our people,” Chief Chisunka said.

“We commend government in this regard [of the debt restructuring.]

He added that the debt restructuring deal will pave the way for increased investor confidence and stimulate economic growth.

“With a more favourable debt profile, we hope to see accelerated progress in the implementation of developmental projects aimed at uplifting the lives of all Zambians,” Chief Chisunka said.

“We look forward to witnessing the tangible benefits of this debt restructuring deal and remain optimistic about the future of our beloved nation.”

The traditional leader further reaffirmed chiefs’ commitment to working closely with government to ensure that policies are successfully implemented for the benefit of communities.

Using the technical knowhow of the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS), The UPND-led government is currently constructing 81 state-of-the-art palaces for chiefs across the country.

ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC PROBLEMS CAN ONLY BE SOLVED BY HOMEGROWN SOLUTIONS- Socialist Party

ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC PROBLEMS CAN ONLY BE SOLVED BY HOMEGROWN SOLUTIONS

….says UPND Government is contradicting itself by giving foreign investors tax holidays while begging for foreign aid – REAGAN KASHINGA

MUFULIRA… Wednesday, April 3, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) Copperbelt Provincial spokesperson Reagan Kashinga has charged that the debt restructuring deal will not in any way help to resolve the economic hardships Zambia is currently grappling with.

Mr. Kashinga said Zambia has remained with a huge burden despite claiming the restructuring deal.

He said Zambia’s economic problems can only be solved by homegrown solutions and proper utilisation of mineral resources.

“As Socialist Party (SP) on the Copperbelt, we hereby add our voice to the issue of Debt Restructuring which the UPND Regime wants to use to gain cheap political mileage. From the onset we wish to state that there is nothing Zambia will gain from having its huge debt restructured by the creditors. This is simply postponing problems and throwing them to the future generation. It is a fact that Zambia remains hugely indebted to its creditors despite the clinched Debt Restructuring deal. We still have a huge debt burden worsened by the UPND Government’s insatiable appétit to borrow more money,” Mr. Kashinga said from Mufulira.

He noted the UPND Government was contradicting itself by giving foreign investors tax holidays while begging for foreign aid.

“Actually the UPND regime of businessmen has borrowed more in the last two and half years compared to the last regime. We can’t even see the positive impact of the UPND’s borrowing because mealie meal prices are still high, fuel is still high, the kwacha remains weak and the cost of living continues to skyrocket. Over dependence on foreign aid and foreign ideas will not in any way help to develop our beloved country. The Government of President Hakainde Hichilema is busy giving tax holidays to foreign investors while going back to their countries to beg for kaloba and Debt Restructuring. This Government has contracting policies that are not working for the people of Zambia,” he said

Mr. Kashinga concluded:”Like, our leader Comrade Dr Fred M’membe has been saying President Hichilema’s love for foreigners at the expense of Zambian brothers and sisters is sending Zambia backward. Finally, as Socialist Party we urge the people of Zambia to redeem themselves from this regime in 2026. People have seen that this Government is not people centred.”

Chinese influencer goes viral for his resemblance to Kobe Bryant, makes $12,000 in 10 days

0

Chinese influencer Ma Jinghui is causing quite a stir on the internet due to his striking resemblance to the deceased basketball icon Kobe Bryant. In just ten days, the 21-year-old’s fame on Douyin skyrocketed from a few thousand followers to 600,000, and by impersonating Bryant in his livestreams, he has already made an incredible 80,000 yuan (US$12,000).

According to the South China Morning Post, Jinghui appears in his videos wearing Bryant’s recognizable No. 24 jersey, benched against a white wall, and with the song See You Again playing in the background. He also says, “Man, I’m back,” to his fans in English.

Jinghui, who refers to himself as the “Chinese version of Kobe Bryant,” usually receives over 100,000 audiences for each live session.

According to the publication, Jinghui began his online experience as a game streamer. His pastimes included playing basketball and computer games, and Bryant was always his favorite basketball player.

An internet user noticed Jinghui’s likeness to Bryant in February and suggested he imitate him to get more followers. Following the advice, Jinghui shaved his head, put on black makeup, threw on the No. 24 jersey, and began live-streaming while holding a basketball.

Jinghui, meanwhile, declared that he was “pleasantly surprised” by his popularity and that he planned to purchase a new phone for his sister and a car for his father with the proceeds.

Jinghui stated, “I’m now learning English to pay a better tribute to Kobe Bryant,” demonstrating his commitment to improving his NBA champion impersonation.

“My goal is 1 million followers, and I’ll be live-streaming basketball games in the future,” he added.

However, Jinghui also drew criticism from the internet. One commenter called him “thin arms and legs, he does not look like a basketball player, he is just cashing in on people’s love for Kobe.”

The influencer did, however, reveal that he has begun a workout regimen and is presently in the muscle-building stage.

Some fans also praised his efforts, saying, “As long as there is love and perseverance, regardless of background or wealth, anyone can play basketball. That is what Kobe taught us.”

Bryant is widely recognized as one of the best basketball players of all time and has long been one of China’s most popular athletes, with roughly 10 million Weibo followers.

53,000 people have left capital of Haiti due to increase in gang violence

0

Over 53,000 people left the capital of Haiti in less than three weeks to get away from continuous gang violence, as stated in a United Nations report on Tuesday.

Over 60 percent of people are going to the countryside in southern Haiti, and this is causing concern for UN officials.

“Our friends who help people in need said that these places don’t have enough buildings and the people who live there don’t have enough money to help all the people leaving Port-au-Prince,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The lower part of the country now has more than 116,000 Haitians who left the capital city, Port-au-Prince, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration report.

A lot of people started leaving the capital city, which has about 3 million people, after dangerous gangs attacked government buildings in late February. Criminals set fire to police stations and shot at the main airport in Haiti. They also broke into the largest prisons and let over 4,000 prisoners out.

The UN says more than 1,500 people have died and 17,000 are homeless by March 22.

Marjorie Michelle-Jean, a 42-year-old street seller, and her two children, ages 4 and 7, were some of the few people traveling north from the capital instead of south.

“I want them to stay alive,” she said, because bullets from the street keep hitting our home’s roof. They tried two times last week to go to her hometown in Mirebalais, Haiti, but they couldn’t because of roadblocks.

She said she will try again for sure. “Port-au-Prince is not safe at all. ”

The UN found that 70% of the 53,125 people who left Port-au-Prince from March 8-27 had already been forced to leave their homes and were living with family or in crowded and dirty makeshift shelters in the city.

Over 90% of people leaving the capital of Haiti are taking crowded buses, even though it is dangerous because gangs control the areas they have to travel through. There have been reports of gang rapes and shootings on public transport.

The fighting made Prime Minister Ariel Henry say last month that he will quit when a new temporary president council is made. Henry went to Kenya to try to get the UN to send East African police to Haiti. But then the attacks started, and now he can’t go to Haiti.

The group that will pick a new leader and government hasn’t been officially set up yet.

At the same time, many people are expected to keep leaving Port-au-Prince and moving to other places.

Gary Dorval, 29, is at a protest and wants to stay until a new government is in charge because he wants to help make things better.

Ukraine reduces age of conscription to 25 in order to make up for military shortage

0

Ukraine made it so that people as young as 25 can now join the military. They did this because they need more soldiers after fighting with Russia for over two years.

The new mobilization law started the day after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved it. Last year, Ukraine’s government approved it.

It was not clear why Zelenskyy took a long time to sign the law. He didn’t say anything about it publicly, and officials didn’t mention how many new soldiers the country would get or which units they would join.

Compulsory military service has been a big issue in Ukraine for a long time because they don’t have enough soldiers or ammunition, which gives Russia an advantage in battle. Russia has not been able to fully use its advantages because it has problems with having enough workers and planning effectively.

The Russian military said that more people have joined recently because they are angry about the terror attack at a concert hall in Moscow last month that killed over 140 people.

Around 16,000 people have joined in the past 10 days, according to Russia’s Defence Ministry. Its statement could not be checked by someone else to make sure it is true.

A group connected to Islamic State said they were responsible for the attack. The Kremlin says Ukraine and the West were involved in the killings, but they haven’t shown any proof. Ukraine and the West say they had nothing to do with it.

Zelenskyy signed a law to allow younger people to be drafted into the military. This law is different from another law being discussed in parliament that would require more people to join the military. The bill 10449 wants to lower the age when people are drafted into the military and also decide who can be excused from serving. It covers many other areas too. This law, which many people don’t like, is having a tough time getting approved by parliament. Lawmakers have submitted over 1,000 changes to it.

Zelenskyy also approved two other laws about mobilization. One of the laws makes an online list for people who want to join the military.

“These laws only make some parts of the mobilization process different. ” “But there are still many problems that need to be fixed,” said Oksana Zabolotna, an analyst at the Centre for United Actions, a government watchdog in Kyiv.

She said that lowering the age for military service probably won’t help the military reach its goal of 500,000 new recruits.

Around 500,000 men are between 25 and 27 years old. She said that some people are not able to work, some have left, and some are not working right now but can work later. She thinks the new law might reach around 10% of the target.

That is a little progress. Military experts say that the average age of Ukrainian soldiers is about 40, which is similar to Russian soldiers. Some people in Ukraine are concerned that removing young adults from their jobs will make the already struggling economy worse. This is a big problem as Kyiv prepares for a possible attack by the Russian military in the summer.

People were very excited to fight against the Kremlin’s forces at first, but now they are not as interested. However, the majority of people still support the war.

Ukraine doesn’t allow men under 60 to travel to other countries right now. Many Ukrainian men are avoiding military service by staying at home or trying to pay money to not have to go to war. The leaders are saying they don’t have enough soldiers to start attacks, and just enough to defend against strong Russian attacks.

Russia has more people than Ukraine, and President Vladimir Putin is willing to make men go to war even if they don’t want to.

Zelenskyy has hardly talked about mobilizing people. In December, he said Ukraine’s army wanted to call up 500,000 more soldiers. But he said he had requested the top leaders to explain the specific information about what is “a very delicate issue” before making a decision on whether to fulfill their request.

Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy said that a big mobilization would cost Ukraine about US$13. 4 billionOther things to think about are whether soldiers at the front will come back home for a break or if they will be replaced by other troops.

Zelenskyy and Gen disagreed about whether to get more troops for Ukraine. Valerii Zaluzhnyi was a well-liked leader of Ukraine’s military, but the president replaced him in February.

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry says that in October, the military had almost 800,000 soldiers. That does not involve the National Guard or other groups. In all, 1 million people from Ukraine are wearing uniforms.

At the same time, Ukraine’s air force reported that it destroyed four drones launched by Russia in central provinces during the night.

An 11-year-old boy was hurt in Russia’s attack in Kupiansk and died in the hospital, the Kharkiv regional Governor said.

British Conservatives expected to lose next election handily to Labour – Survey

0

The Conservative Party, led by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is likely to lose by a lot in the upcoming national election. A new prediction says the Labour Party could win over 400 seats.

The YouGov model predicts which party will win in different areas based on how many people they think will vote for them. It says that the Conservatives will win 155 seats and Labour will win 403 seats. Britain’s parliament has 650 places for politicians to sit.

Surveys have shown that Labour is ahead of the Conservatives by a lot of points. Sunak has said that he plans to hold an election in the second half of the year.

The Conservatives have been in charge since 2010, but there have been five different prime ministers during that time because of the Brexit vote and the  pandemic crisis.

The poll showed that Sunak is having a hard time getting support after cutting taxes last month. This is happening before the local elections in May. The prediction showed that the Conservatives are not doing as well, and Labour is doing better compared to when YouGov last made a similar prediction in January.

YouGov predicts that the Conservative Party will win less seats than they did in 1997 when they lost to the Labour Party led by Tony Blair.

According to YouGov, some well-known Conservative politicians like finance minister Jeremy Hunt and former leadership candidate Penny Mordaunt might not win their seats in the election.

The model predicted that Labour would not win as many seats as it did when Blair was in charge. It also predicted that the majority of seats they would win would be less than what they won in 1997.

YouGov talked to 18,761 adults in the UK from March 7-27 for the survey. The number is a lot bigger than typical surveys, and YouGov said the way they did it correctly guessed the results of the last two elections.

The model predicted that in the election, Labour would get 41 percent of the votes and Conservatives would get 24 percent. However, it mentioned that the results might be different from the usual polls because it included people who are not planning to vote.

physically healthy 28-year-old Dutch woman has chosen to legally end her life due to her struggles with crippling depression

0

A physically healthy 28-year-old Dutch woman has chosen to legally end her life due to her struggles with crippling depression, autism and borderline personality disorder, according to a report.

Zoraya ter Beek, who lives in a village in the Netherlands near the German border, is scheduled to be euthanized in May, leaving behind her 40-year-old boyfriend and her two cats.

Ter Beek, who once aspired to be a psychiatrist, has been dealing with mental health struggles throughout her life.

She said she decided to be euthanized after her doctors told her, “There’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better,” according to The Free Press.

“I was always very clear that if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this anymore,” ter Beek said.

Physically healthy Dutch woman, 28, decides to be euthanized due to crippling depression

She is just one of the growing number of people in the West who have decided to die rather than continue living in pain.

More people are deciding to end their lives while suffering from other mental health problems like depression or anxiety amplified by economic uncertainty, climate change, social media and other issues, The Free Press reported.

“I’m seeing euthanasia as some sort of acceptable option brought to the table by physicians, by psychiatrists, when previously it was the ultimate last resort,” Stef Groenewoud, a healthcare ethicist at Theological University Kampen, in the Netherlands, told the outlet.

“I see the phenomenon especially in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially young people with psychiatric disorders, where the healthcare professional seems to give up on them more easily than before,” she added.

Ter Beek plans to be cremated after she’s euthanized on the couch in her living room.

“No music,” she said.

A doctor will first give her a sedative, followed by a drug that will stop her heart. Her boyfriend will be at her side until the end.

“The doctor really takes her time. It is not that they walk in and say: lay down please! Most of the time it is first a cup of coffee to settle the nerves and create a soft atmosphere,” she said.

“Then she asks if I am ready. I will take my place on the couch. She will once again ask if I am sure, and she will start up the procedure and wish me a good journey. Or, in my case, a nice nap, because I hate it if people say, ‘Safe journey.’ I’m not going anywhere.”

There will not be a funeral.

Ter Beek, who does not have much family, said her boyfriend will scatter her ashes in “a nice spot in the woods” that they have picked out.

“I’m a little afraid of dying, because it’s the ultimate unknown,” she said.

“We don’t really know what’s next—or is there nothing? That’s the scary part.”

The Netherlands became the first country in the world to make assisted suicide legal in 2001.

Since then, it’s become an increasingly popular option among the population.

In 2022, there were 8,720 euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands.

In February, the 93-year-old former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt and his wife died hand in hand by euthanasia.

Ex-Spanish FA president is detained by police to face corruption questions amid World Cup kiss-gate

Former Spanish FA boss Luis Rubiales has been detained by Spanish authorities to face corruption questions while at risk of jail over World Cup kiss-gate

Detectives detained him as he stepped off an Air Europa flight from the Dominican Republic which landed at Madrid’s Barajas Airport just after 10.30am local time today, April 3.

Ex-Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales is detainedbypolice to face corruption questions amid World Cup kiss-gate

Rubiales was placed in the custody of the Civil Guard as soon as he got off the plane and was escorted into a police van and taken to their headquarters in Tres Cantos.

He will taken to a police station where he is expected to be formally read his rights and handed a court summons as part of an ongoing corruption probe linked to his time as head of the Spanish FA and focusing on business deals thought to include one to hold the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

A judge is expected to question him in a closed court hearing in the coming days before being released on bail pending an ongoing probe.

The investigation, led by a judge based in Majadahonda on the outskirts of Madrid, is unrelated to the separate ‘Kissgate’ probe.

Last month public prosecutors involved in that case said they were seeking a two-and-a-half year prison sentence over the ‘unwanted’ kiss Rubiales gave footballer Jenni Hermoso following the Spain’s World Cup women’s team’s finals victory over England last August.

They said in an indictment sent to Madrid-based judge Francisco de Jorge they wanted him jailed for a year if he was found guilty at trial of sexual assault and another one and a half years for coercion linked to his alleged attempts to get the footballer to speak out in his defence following his World Cup kiss.

Around the same time Spanish public prosecutors asked for Rubiales to be arrested over alleged financial irregularities while he was in charge of the Spanish FA.

Rubiales’ home in the southern Spanish city of Granada was one of several properties searched on March 20 but he was already in the Caribbean.

Rubiales had already said he would return to Spain and insisted it would be on April 6 but overnight it emerged he had changed his travel plans.

He is thought to have avoided an embarrassing arrest, and a photo of him in handcuffs, after confirming his voluntary return ahead of and after a Spanish police operation in the Dominican Republic on Monday with assistance from local officers.

He rescheduled his return to Madrid after Spanish police investigators flew to the Caribbean and confiscated his phone and a laptop during a reported search of the property he has been staying at on the Caribbean island.

Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing in both the ongoing corruption probe and the ‘Kissgate’ case.

In a TV interview with Spanish journalist Ana Pastor, set to be screened tonight on La Sexta, he will deny allegations he embezzled millions of pounds from the Spanish FA and insist: ‘My money is the product of my work and my savings.’

He is also expected to accuse the judge who charged him with coercion and sexual assault over his ‘unwanted’ Jenni Hermoso kiss of manipulation by saying: ‘I think his way of describing my words is manipulative.’

Tottenham considers new investment options following £86 million loss

0

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has acknowledged ongoing discussions with potential new investors following the revelation of a post-tax loss amounting to £86.8 million ($109.2 million) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.

Despite achieving a record turnover of £549.6 million ($691 million) during the period, the club experienced a 21% increase in operating expenses, attributed to factors such as uncontrollable cost escalations in utilities, rates, and consumables, alongside substantial investments in new players.

Tottenham’s wage bill also surged by 20% to £251.1 million ($316 million), positioning it as the fifth-highest in the league behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

The reported loss marks a significant rise from the previous year’s figure of £50.1 million ($63 million).

Speculation regarding a potential sale of the club by owners ENIC has been circulating, with suggestions that they may entertain offers if deemed suitable.

However, sources close to the club have indicated to ESPN that ongoing discussions are primarily focused on selling a stake rather than pursuing a complete sale.

“Our ethos is clear — to be far-sighted and run the club sustainably,” Levy wrote in the chairman’s statement accompanying the figures

“This involves strict control of our cost base, increased commercial and sponsorship revenues and consistent European participation, all of which are key to our ability to continue to invest in the squad and win top honours.

“Since opening the stadium in April 2019, we have invested over £600m ($755m) in our men’s and women’s first-team squads.

“To capitalise on our long-term potential, to continue to invest in the teams and undertake future capital projects, the club requires a significant increase in its equity base.

“The Board and its advisors, Rothschild & Co, are in discussions with prospective investors. Any recommended investment proposal would require the support of the club’s shareholders.”

The signings of James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, along with Beth England’s transfer from Chelsea in January 2023 for a reported fee of around £250,000, were notable transactions during the accounting period. However, the bulk of Tottenham’s summer transfer activity occurred after June 30, including Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich for a potential fee of up to €120 million.

The future growth trajectory of Tottenham hinges significantly on their £1 billion stadium, which played a pivotal role in their financial landscape.

Notably, Beyonce’s five-night concert series last summer set a record as the “highest-grossing concert ever staged by a female artist at the time,” a milestone later eclipsed by Taylor Swift.

Moreover, Tottenham has entered into strategic partnerships to diversify revenue streams and enhance fan engagement.

This includes a 15-year collaboration with Formula One to offer an electric karting experience at the stadium and an extension of their contract with the NFL to host matches at the venue through the 2029-30 season.

Meanwhile, Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, saw his personal income rise from £3.3 million to £3.6 million, accompanied by a £3 million ($3.7 million) bonus.

This increase in earnings may provoke discontent among supporters, particularly in light of recent objections to the club’s decision to raise ticket prices by 6%.

Brighton announces a $154 million profit for 2022/2023 season

0

Premier League club, Brighton, announced a remarkable after-tax profit of £122.8 million ($154.4 million) for the 2022-23 season.

This substantial increase from the previous year’s profit of £24.1 million ($30.3 million) was attributed to the sale of key players like Alexis Mac Allister, Yves Bissouma, and Marc Cucurella, as well as compensation received for former manager Graham Potter, who joined Chelsea in September 2022.

It’s worth noting that the reported figures do not include significant transfers such as Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez, as their moves to Chelsea were finalised after the reporting period.

Caicedo’s transfer fetched up to $146 million, while Sanchez’s transfer reportedly brought in $32 million.

Furthermore, Brighton’s financial success was bolstered by their achievement of their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing sixth place, and reaching the semifinals of the FA Cup.

“We now have a very solid platform to continue to make significant progress on the pitch, by investing in our squad,” Brighton deputy chairman and chief executive Paul Barber said.

Brighton reported a record turnover of £204.5 million ($257 million), indicating significant financial growth for the club.

However, this success has attracted attention to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is being considered for several high-profile coaching positions expected to become available this summer.

Vacancies at top clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Liverpool, where Thomas Tuchel, Xavi Hernandez, and Jurgen Klopp are set to depart, have been linked to De Zerbi.

Despite the speculation, De Zerbi stated last week that he intends to hold discussions with Brighton’s owners before making any decisions about his future.

“It’s [future] not a problem, it’s a part of my work. At the moment, I want to be focused and to keep my eyes on the target we have. I have the contract at the moment. The focus is on the pitch,” he said.

“I’m very relaxed. The problems are the injured players and the preparations for the next game. These are the problems not the contract or my future.”

De Zerbi’s contract with Brighton expires in 2026.

Quick to forget – Pep hits back at Roy Keane over ‘League Two player’ jibe at Haaland

0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded to Roy Keane’s criticism of Erling Haaland by defending the young striker.

Keane had commented after Manchester City’s draw with Arsenal that while Haaland excels at scoring goals, his overall performance is reminiscent of a player from a lower division.

This remark has stirred discussions among football fans and analysts.

Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Keane said: “The levels of his general play are so poor, and not just today. His general play for such a player is so poor, I think he has to improve that he’s almost like a League Two player.”

Guardiola, however, vehemently opposed Keane’s assessment and told reporters: “I do not agree with him, absolutely not. It’s like [if] I said he’s a manager for the second or third league. I don’t think so.

“He’s the best striker in the world and he helped us win what we won last season and the reason why we don’t create many chances [against Arsenal] is not from Erling. He is exceptional. We need more presence in the final third with more people and we played an exceptional game against Arsenal. I reviewed it.”

Guardiola expressed surprise at the criticism directed towards Haaland, particularly coming from a former player like Keane. He believes that ex-players, having experienced the rigours of professional football first-hand, should demonstrate a deeper understanding and empathy towards current players.

“I am surprised when it comes from former players. It’s like referees when they retire, they always criticise the refs,” he said.

“That always surprises me. The memory disappears quickly. The problems players have now, they had too. They missed it a thousand, million times and were hurt when they were criticised by former players. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but I am not a guy who is going to criticise my colleagues when I retire.”

Haaland’s remarkable goal-scoring record further bolstered Guardiola’s defence of the player. With 52 goals in 53 games last season and 29 goals in 35 games this term, Haaland’s prowess in front of goal is undeniable, cementing his status as one of the most prolific strikers in modern football.
As City continue their pursuit of the Premier League title, Guardiola’s spirited defence of Haaland shows his unwavering faith in the striker’s abilities.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard admitted that modern superstars should get used to the criticism. “It’s their job, accept it,” he said.
“If you can’t accept it as a footballer, you have to dedicate to another job, like reading books or . . . .”

Haaland will have an opportunity to silence his critics when he takes to the pitch against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

Judge in Trump classified materials case chastised by prosecutors for her “fundamentally flawed”

0

Federal prosecutors scolded the judge in charge of former President Trump‘s case in Florida. They told her not to use jury instructions that are based on a bad legal idea.

In an unusual way, Judge Aileen Cannon told the prosecutors and defense lawyers to submit suggestions for jury instructions for most of the charges, even though it’s not clear when the trial will happen. She asked the lawyers to give their opinions on different explanations of the law. These explanations seem to support the argument of the former Republican president that he was allowed to keep the important documents that he has been accused of having.

Legal experts were surprised by the decision and Jack Smith’s team was worried. They said on Tuesday that a law from 1978 doesn’t apply in this case about very secret documents. This law says presidents have to give back official records when they leave office, but they can keep personal ones.

Prosecutors said that those documents were not personal and there is no evidence that Trump ever marked them as his own. They said he only made up the suggestion after people found out he took boxes of records from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago estate. And the people they talked to didn’t support his argument.

“No one heard Trump say he was making records personal or that when he moved the boxes to Mar-a-Lago, he thought he was making them personal under the PRA,” prosecutors stated. “Actually, none of the witnesses knew anything about it when asked. ”

The team of Smith said that if the judge keeps on mentioning the law about presidential records in her instructions to the jury, she should tell the lawyers right away so they can ask for a review.

The documents show that the prosecutors are still frustrated with how Cannon is dealing with the case.

The judge chosen by Trump has not made a decision on several requests to end the case. There are also other arguments between the two sides, and the date for the trial is still not decided. This means that the case, which Smith’s team says has a lot of evidence, might not be finished by the time of the November election.

Cannon was criticized for allowing an independent person to review documents from an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago after Trump requested it. Last month, Cannon listened to arguments about two of Trump’s requests to dismiss the case: one that said the Presidential Records Act allowed him to call the documents personal, and another that said he was allowed to keep them because of that.

The judge seemed unsure about that argument but didn’t make a decision right away. Days after, she told both sides to create jury instructions that answered this question: “Can a president decide by himself which records are personal or presidential during his time in office. ” Neither a judge nor a group of people in a court can decide or look at that type of decision.

The former president’s choice to keep personal records instead of giving them back to the government, means that the president sees those records as personal under the PRA.

Prosecutors said that the way they understood the law is incorrect. They also told Cannon to quickly reject the defence motion to dismiss.

They said that the difference between personal and presidential records doesn’t matter when it comes to a former President having documents with national defense information. The law that makes it a crime to keep national defense information illegally should not consider the Presidential Records Act when giving instructions to the jury.

“They said that according to the information we have now, the PRA should not be involved in the trial. ”

Trump, who is expected to be the Republican candidate for the 2024 election, is accused of breaking the law by sharing secret documents. He could be charged with many serious crimes related to this. The former president is facing four criminal cases in Florida. He says he didn’t do anything wrong in any of them.

Russian billionaires’ combined wealth close to US$600 billion – Forbes

0

The richest people in Russia made US$72 billion more money in the last year, making their total wealth US$577 billion, according to Forbes. Vagit Alekperov, the former president of the oil company Lukoil, is the richest person in Russia.

In 2021, before Russia attacked Ukraine, Forbes said that Russian billionaires had about $606 billion altogether. Expensive things and Russia’s focus on war instead of its economy have helped the economy to improve.

Many rich Russian people were put under punishment by Western countries because they wanted to punish President Vladimir Putin and his friends for starting a war in Ukraine. Their overall money reduced to $353 billion in 2022.

Alekperov’s money went up to $28. 6 billion from US$20. 5 billion in the last year, according to Forbes. He is now in first place in Russia, taking over from Andrei Melnichenko who is now in seventh place. Andrei made his money in fertilizers and his wealth dropped from $25. 2 billion to $21. 1

Leonid Mikhelson is the boss of a Russian gas company called Novatek. Forbes said he is the second richest person, and his money went up by $5. 8 billion to $27. 4

Forbes said there are now more super rich people in the world than ever before, with a total of 2,781 billionaires. The top 20 of them have gained the most wealth. Alekperov was ranked 59th in the world.

Forbes said that they are richer than ever, worth a total of US$14. 2 trillion, which is an increase of US$2 trillion from 2023.

Putin has said many times that the sanctions from Western countries did not hurt Russia’s economy. He also said that Russia’s economy grew faster last year than the economies of the Group of Seven countries, which are the ones who put the sanctions on Russia.

Russia has a lot of natural resources and its economy got much better after a bad time in 2022. But most of the growth comes from making weapons and bullets for the war in Ukraine, so it’s not really improving the lives of the people in Russia.

This year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) thinks that the Russian economy will grow by 2. 6But they also believe that the economy will face difficult times because many people are leaving the country and there is not enough technology.

Russian business people are getting a lot of help from Western companies leaving. Many companies are selling their stuff for cheap, or having their Russian business taken over and run by local managers.

NATO considering strategy to offer Ukraine long-term military support

0

NATO is discussing a plan to give more steady military help to Ukraine in the next few years, as Russian troops with better weapons are gaining control in the war.

“We believe that Ukraine should receive more long-term help from NATO instead of relying on short-term, voluntary offers,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg before a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels.

On Wednesday, Ukraine made the military conscription age lower from 27 to 25 to bring in more soldiers after being at war for over two years. A lack of soldiers and not enough ammunition has helped Russian troops take control.

“We do this because of what’s happening on the battlefield in Ukraine. ” “It’s important,” Stoltenberg told the reporters. “We can see that Russia is trying to win the war by being patient and waiting for us to give up. ”

The idea is for NATO to organize the work of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, which is a group of about 50 countries that have been meeting during the war to provide weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. This would be instead of the US European Command.

The general in the United States. Christopher Cavoli is the top military leader for NATO and the head of US European Command. This means that he is the person in charge and will not change. However, Stoltenberg said that there is a need for an official “institutional framework” as the war continues, and NATO can provide it.

NATO is not giving weapons to Ukraine directly, but they will send non-lethal aid like tools to remove explosives, fuel, and medical supplies. This shows a new level of NATO’s involvement in the war.

NATO wants to help Ukraine more, especially because Russia has a strong military, but its members are not willing to promise Ukraine membership in the organization for ultimate security. They also don’t want to get involved in a big war with a country like Russia, which has nuclear weapons.

The new plan is for NATO to work together to help Ukraine and figure out what they need, get promises of help, and have meetings to discuss how to support them. The plan should be approved by US President Joe Biden and other leaders in July.

The Financial Times newspaper said that the plan could cost up to $100 billion over several years, but Stoltenberg did not give any more information.

Western countries said they would help Ukraine, but they did not keep their promises. Europe promised to give 1 million rounds of ammunition, but they didn’t give enough. They also had a fight about money for Ukraine’s struggling economy, and now the help is still stopped in the US.

“It’s not safe to promise things we can’t do,” said Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib when asked how much her country might give to a $100 billion fund. She said we need to talk more about the plan.

Stoltenberg asked Congress to work together and pass a bill that gives $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine. He said that the delay is causing problems on the battlefield.

“He said this is why Ukrainians have to limit the number of artillery shells and are struggling to defend themselves against the powerful Russian military force. ” The Russian soldiers have more bullets and bigger guns than the other soldiers.

9 people killed and buildings damaged in Taiwan’s largest earthquake

0

Taiwan had a really big earthquake for the first time in 25 years. It happened during the morning rush hour on Wednesday. The earthquake caused a lot of damage to buildings and roads and nine people died.

During the earthquake in Taipei, old buildings lost their tiles and schools moved students to sports fields with yellow safety helmets. Some kids used textbooks to protect themselves from things that might fall on them while the aftershocks kept happening. Later, a tall building in Hualien County was left leaning at a 45-degree angle and its first floor had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said nine people died in the earthquake, which happened just before 8 am. The newspaper said that three people who were hiking in Taroko National Park were killed in rockslides, and the driver of a van also died when big rocks hit the vehicle.

The agency said that 50 people in minibuses are missing because the earthquake damaged the phone networks and the authorities can’t reach them. More than 70 people are stuck, but they are thought to be okay. Some of them are in a coal mine. Another 882 people got hurt.

Taiwan’s earthquake agency said the earthquake was a 7. 2 magnitude, while the US Geological Survey said it was a 7. It hit about 18 kilometers (11. 1 miles) south-southwest of Hualien and was about 35 kilometers (21 miles) deep. Several smaller earthquakes happened after the main one, and the USGS said one of them was a 6. 5 magnitude earthquake and was 11. 8 kilometers (7 miles) deep. Smaller earthquakes usually cause more damage on the ground. The earthquake made a big wave warning, but it was cancelled later.

Officials had thought there would be a small earthquake of a magnitude 4, so they didn’t warn anyone. Yet, the earthquake was powerful enough to frighten people who are accustomed to such movement.

“Earthquakes happen a lot, and I’m used to them. ” Today was the first time a resident in Taipei, Hsien-hsuen Keng, was very scared and cried because of an earthquake. Keng lives on the fifth floor of an apartment. “The earthquake woke me up. ” I had never felt shaking so strong before.

People and rescue workers helped residents, including a small child, get out of their homes through the windows and onto the street. Everyone on the mobile was surprised but luckily no one was seriously hurt. The doors were stuck closed because of the tilt.

The old school that turned into a national building and parts of the main airport near Taipei got a little damaged.

The earthquake caused traffic to come to a stop on the east coast. Landslides and debris falling from the mountains hit the tunnels and highways, making it hard for cars to move. Train and subway services were stopped all over the island with 23 million people. In the capital city of Taipei, a new above-ground train line was also affected.

The Japan Meteorological Agency found a small tsunami of 30 centimeters (about 1 foot) on the coast of Yonaguni island about 15 minutes after the earthquake. The waves were smaller in Ishigaki and Miyako islands.

The earthquake was noticed in Shanghai and in many provinces along the southeastern coast of China, as reported by Chinese media. China and Taiwan are around 160 kilometers (100 miles) away from each other. China did not warn people in the mainland about a tsunami, and all tsunami alerts in the area were removed by Wednesday afternoon.

The island is used to earthquakes, so people quickly stopped panicking after the earthquake. They have drills at schools and get notices on their phones to prepare for earthquakes.

By lunchtime, lots of people were at the metro station in Beitou, Taipei. Some were going to work and others, mostly older people, were going to the hot springs or hiking in the mountains nearby.

Stephen Gao, a scientist who studies earthquakes at Missouri University of Science and Technology, said Taiwan is very well-prepared for earthquakes. They have strong rules for building buildings, a great system for tracking earthquakes, and they teach a lot of people how to stay safe during earthquakes.

Hualien was hit by a powerful earthquake in 2018 that caused a historic hotel and other buildings to collapse. Taiwan had a very strong earthquake in September. On September 21, 1999, a very strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7. 7 happenedIt caused 2,400 people to die, around 100,000 people got hurt, and many buildings were destroyed.

Taiwan is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is where a lot of earthquakes happen around the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake caused damage to Taiwan’s economy, but the exact cost is still unknown. Taiwan makes the best computer chips and other high-tech items in the world, and these products can be easily damaged by earthquakes. Some parts of the electricity system were turned off, which might cause problems with getting goods and money lost.

TSMC, a company in Taiwan that makes computer chips, had to move its workers out of some factories in Hsinchu, which is in the southwest of Taipei. TSMC makes chips for companies like Apple. Hsinchu officials said that factories in the city’s science park have normal water and electricity supplies.

The Taiwan stock market opened as normal on Wednesday. The index went up and down, sometimes losing and sometimes gaining.

Zelenskyy modifies his command and dismisses more assistants as Russia strikes hard

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired a trusted assistant and some advisors on Saturday. This is part of a larger staff change. Meanwhile, Russia launched new attacks overnight.

Zelenskyy fired his top aide Serhiy Shefir from his job as first assistant, which he had been doing since 2019. The Ukrainian president fired three advisers and two officials who were in charge of helping volunteers and soldiers.

No one explained right away why there were big changes in the staff recently. On Tuesday, Oleksii Danilov and Valerii Zaluzhnyi were fired from their jobs. Oleksii Danilov was the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and Valerii Zaluzhnyi was in charge of the armed forces. This happened on February. Write this text in simpler words: “8. ” Earlier this month, he was chosen to be Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Ukraine’s air force said that Russia sent 12 drones and shot 9 down, and also fired 4 missiles into eastern Ukraine.

Russia fired 38 missiles, carried out 75 airstrikes, and launched 98 attacks using rocket launchers in the past day, according to Ukraine’s military.

Ukrainian energy company Centrenergo said on Saturday that the Zmiiv Thermal Power Plant, one of the biggest power plants in eastern Kharkiv region, was destroyed by Russian shelling last week. Despite efforts, approximately 120,000 people in the area were still experiencing power outages. A total of 700,000 people initially lost electricity after the plant was damaged on March 22nd.

Russia has been attacking Ukraine’s energy stuff more and more, and it has caused a lot of damage in different places.

Authorities in the Poltava region said on Saturday that a facility, like a power plant, had been hit several times. But they didn’t say exactly what kind of facility it was.

At the same time, we found out on Saturday that 99 drones and missiles hit different areas of Ukraine on Friday. Local officials in the Kherson region also said one civilian died on Saturday morning. A person from the Dnipropetrovsk region passed away in a hospital because of injuries from a shell, as reported by the regional Governor.

Police shoot dead 9 men who s3xually assaulted a young girl in front of her mother

South African Police have shot dead nine members of a brutal gang suspected of raping a young girl in front of her screaming mother.

The country’s police tactical firearms team were ordered by top brass to find the eleven men who had sexually tortured the girl who was repeatedly raped during a house robbery

Officers from the crack KZN Provincial Stabilisation Team were mobilised when a tip-off came through that the feared gang was planning a hit on a rival boss.

The unit was reportedly dropped off close to a house identified as the gang HQ in Desai, Mariannhill.

On their arrival, someone alerted the gang members inside who opened fire on the police unit, but the officers quickly regrouped and started firing back.

Within minutes nine gang members were all killed.

Police are hunting the two known remaining members who either escaped or who were not present, relaying the news to the rape victim and her mother.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: ‘The Provincial Stabilisation Team pounced on the gang in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

‘The suspects had been on our radar for serious and violent crimes but then allegedly raped a young girl and made her mother watch during a house robbery.

‘The shoot-out happened when we received intelligence that the gang were plotting to execute a hit on a rival so an action plan was quickly put into place.

‘Nine gang members were shot dead and three firearms have so far been found in their possession and a manhunt for two suspects is underway’ he said.

A South African Police detective based in Durban said: ‘This group had been pushing and pushing for a while and this horrific gang rape was just the final straw.

‘It happened just before info came in to where the gang could be found so the green light was given to arrest them but they made a mistake in opening fire first.

‘The response was instant and when the shooting stopped 9 of those inside were dead’ he said.

Esther Lungu’s appeal cannot succeed -State argues

DEPUTY chief State advocate Magaret Chitundu says there are minimal chances of Esther Lungu’s appeal succeeding before the Court of Appeal in which she wants to challenge a ruling of the Economic and Financial Crimes Court.

She explained that it was settled law that proceedings in a lower Court can only be suspended by a Superior Court if exceptional circumstances are shown.

On March 21, 2024, the Court of Appeal prevented the Economic and Financial Crime Court from hearing evidence on how the former First Lady acquired high-end 15 double storey flats in State lodge area, when she had no viable source of income as established by the Drug Enforcement Commission.

The Court granted Esther an ex-parte order staying the forfeiture proceedings before the EFCC pending determination of an appeal against its refusal to allow her cross examine DEC investigations officer Emmanuel Khondowe on his findings.

The former first lady had raised a preliminary issue on Khondowe’s standing in the matter, for deposing an affidavit when he is not a public prosecutor.

She argued that Khondowe was not a certified accountant for him to conclude that her properties were tainted.

During interparte hearing before judges Mwinde Siavwapa, Court president, his deputy Chalwe Muchenga and Yvonne Chembe Esther’s lawyer Desislava Findlay argued that every party must be allowed to present its case by challenging evidence and adducing evidence.

She said if the order staying proceedings is not confirmed and proceedings before the EFCC are determined before the appeal, Esther’s rights will be lost.

“It is not in the interest of Justice to strike off the appeal. The stay of proceedings is intended to preserve the integrity of the appeal,” Desislava said.

“We have highlighted the prejudice that will be suffered by the applicant should the stay of proceedings not be continued. The Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act Ssection 11(4) provides for an automatic stay pending the determination of the substantive appeal.”

She submitted that It is imperative that the stay of proceedings be maintained to avoid rendering the appeal pending determination before the Court of Appeal an academic exercise.

In reply Chitundu argued that the five grounds of appeal relied upon by Esther have no chances of success.

“The grounds they have raised have already been settled by higher Courts in this land. Staying the proceedings in the EFCC is merely going to delay proceedings in the case before that Court,” she said.

Chitundu argued that the section cited by Desislava was wrongly cited and does not apply to the stay before court as it only applies to instances where there is a final forfeiture order.

“We pray that this court observes the rulings of the Court not to stay proceedings in the case because there is no likely prejudice that will be occasioned to Esther as the appeal they have embarked on is not likely to proceed,” said Chitundu.

In reply Desislava said the State has not demonstrated how the entire five grounds of appeal are unlikely to succeed.

“ The state has only addressed one ground of appeal and there is an attempt to challenge another. It seems they have no authority to show that the other three grounds are unlikely to succeed,” she said.

“The state has not argued against the special circumstances highlighted by Esther. Nothing has been brought forth to demonstrate that they are not special and should not be considered.”

She urged the court to confirm the order granted ex-parte.

Judge Siavwapa reserved Ruling for a date to be communicated to the parties.

In this case the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to forfeit Esther’s 15 semi-luxurious houses State lodge area worth K41.5 million on reasons that they were acquired using illegal means…https://kalemba.news/…/esther-lungus-appeal-cannot…/

THE COLLAPSE OF INVESTRUST BANK: A new model of managing national assets urgently needed- Fred M’membe

THE COLLAPSE OF INVESTRUST BANK: A new model of managing national assets urgently needed!

Yesterday, Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) took possession of the management and control of Investrust Bank Plc (IBP). Apart from Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank (ZICB), IBP is the only other truly indigenously owned and controlled bank in Zambia. For contexts’ sake, as of June 30, 2023, close to 95% of the banking assets in Zambia are foreign owned and controlled. With the sad news at IBP, this paltry stake we hold in the ownership of financial assets has been diluted further to near zero. Every patriot must be worried about this. You cannot be truly sovereign if the financial and banking assets are controlled and owned by foreign interests.

In our view, the problems at IBP are symbolic of what happens in any industry when state actors throw their national’s interests and assets to the wolves of international monopoly capital. In the Socialist Party, we will heighten support to state owned banks and encourage indigenous Zambians to own and manage banks and financial institutions.
The government must support local banks unapologetically.

The takeover of IBP is primarily because state institutions, which are key institutional investors, do not have a deliberate policy to support local banks and local financial institutions. The rise of Nigeria as an economic giant in Africa can be traced to decisions made in the late 1980s under the leadership of Gen Ibrahim Babangida where all federal and state finances were to be deposited (not in foreign banks) but in newly created Nigerian owned banks. The result is a robust Nigerian financial and banking system, which has now made Nigeria the banking and financial services Mecca of Africa. Patriots, imagine for once that NAPSA, NHIMA, Workers Compensation funds were exclusively deposited in local banks like ZICB, IBP, Zanaco, Indo Zambia, NATSAVE and ZNBS? I am not even talking about ministries and spending agencies in government! In 5 years’ time, these institutions will become market leaders and control the economic barometer of our land. Today, the top 5 banks by asset and earnings in Zambia are overwhelmingly foreign. This is a ticking time bomb. There is no economy where a government flirts and dates with all things foreign. Are the leading banks in Egypt foreign owned? Are the major banks in South Africa and Ethiopia foreign owned?

We know that by the time BoZ was making this decision, they had several engagements with the shareholder ZCCM-IH, which falls under CDC chaired by the President. Why did IDC not intervene and bail out a local bank? Who bewitched us!

The UPND’s chaotic monetary policies are worrying.
The IBP failure also exposes the UPND’s chaotic monetary policy of siphoning liquidity through increased Statutory Reserve Ratio (SRR) to 14.5%. At the same time Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) was increased to 12.5%. When you add the mopping up of nearly K2bn in January 2024, these knee-jerk reactions were bound to cause unimaginable disaster. This has milked away all the cash in the market.

Today, there’s no support for local businesses worth talking about.
It has been worse for our local banks whose main clients are local contractors whose invoices have never been paid for nearly 3 years. Whilst international banks are well funded and capitalised, you can’t say the same for our local unsupported banks. Also don’t forget that most local businesses who bank with local banks have been shunned by the UPND government in preference for foreign companies. The government must reverse the draconian monetary policy that has crippled the banking industry before more local banks and financial institutions are swept away in the way of bank failures. The government must also settle the billions of money they owe local contractors and suppliers on the pretext that they are PF cadres. These are the businesses that transact with local banks. The big multinational foreign investors bank with their own foreign banks.

Governance and management weaknesses at IBP should also not be ignored.
Of course, we are aware that IBP has had historical governance weaknesses and management
incompetencies. We are aware of how high impact and productive senior management were frustrated and sidelined out of the bank. The bank was not short of cronyism, tribalism, and even outright abuse and fraud by stakeholders. If the boards and management of IBP in years gone by had made more professional decisions, the course of the bank would be different. We are also aware of the corporate wars that happened at the bank. We are also aware of how ZCCM-IH was literary forced to acquire that shareholding against internal ZCCM-IH management and board due diligence. There was no value in the deal, and Rupiah Banda’s State House forced that deal on ZCCM-IH. But this is a story for another day.

Incompetence at the Bank of Zambia should not also be ignored.
Where is the Bank of Zambia in all this? Can it be said that BoZ was not aware of the systemic problems at IBP until now? We don’t think so. When did IBP last publish its financial statements as required by the Banking and Financial Services Act 2017? The leadership challenges at the central bank are in public. At a deeper level, we have a central bank that is inept and an acolyte of Western and textbook monetary policies that have no meaningful value for our local industry and our people. Under Socialist Party, the Bank of Zambia will be reformed to make it an instrument that helps to elevate the standards of living for our people. What use is double-digit GDP and single digit inflation if our people are hungry and poor? If our people are excluded from participating in commerce and enterprise through artificially propped up interest rates? The reforms at BoZ are long overdue.

Under the SP, we will identify financial institutions and support them to run profitably, but these must be Zambian owned and controlled. State resources will be banked in the local banks as part of the deepening of our local financial systems.

For now, and as a matter of national urgency and emergency, we demand that the government and the central bank move in to forestall financial sector confidence. The mounting loss of confidence in Zambian owned financial institutions is a serious national risk to our financial system. If this is not done, we shall see contagion risk spread to ZICB, NATSAVE, Zanaco, and ZNBS. We cannot afford to lose these national assets and institutions regardless of their weaknesses. SP already has a master plan to come revive our own local financial houses. We will use this critical artery to catalyse a national economic renaissance that is rooted in our own people, our own systems, and for our own national, not monopoly capital interests.

Allegations of Unpaid Loans by Prominent Opposition Politicians: Fred M’membe and Edith Nawakwi

Allegations of Unpaid Loans by Prominent Opposition Politicians: Fred M’membe and Edith Nawakwi

The Financial Scandal

A number of politicians from Zambia’s former Patriotic Front (PF) regime, along with their allies, have been implicated in a scandal involving substantial unpaid loans. These loans were obtained from the now-defunct Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ) and Investrust Bank, which recently closed due to financial insolvency.

The Nature of the Loans

Reports reveal that these individuals secured large loans through a system of patronage, subsequently neglecting their repayment obligations. This failure to repay has been highlighted as a contributing factor to the financial difficulties faced by the lending institutions.

Prominent Figures Named

Fred Mmembe’s Financial Ventures:

Fred Mmembe, former owner of the Post Newspaper and now leader of the Socialist Party, is among those named. Mmembe reportedly secured a $350,000 loan from Investrust Bank, using the newspaper’s assets as collateral, to fund the Zambian Airways project, which eventually failed. Additionally, he obtained $240,000 from DBZ for his courier service business, which also floundered without repaying the loans. Mmembe’s ventures were further criticized for evading taxes and failing to make statutory contributions.

Edith Nawakwi’s Business and Political Ambitions:

Edith Nawakwi, another noted figure, borrowed $150,000 from DBZ for her Legana Sausage business, later taking an additional $50,000 purportedly for business expansion. However, these funds were reportedly diverted into her unsuccessful political activities, including a nationwide initiative to support women in the poultry business.

Other Politicians Involved

Several other politicians, including former finance ministers Bwalya Ng’andu and Margaret Mwanakatwe, were mentioned for obtaining loans from these institutions, contributing to their financial strain.

Legal and Political Repercussions

Dr. Samuel Bwalya, former DBZ managing director, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for abuse of office, highlighting the legal consequences of the misuse of funds. However, there’s a growing call for greater accountability for all involved, especially the politicians who remain free despite their significant debts.

Call for Transparency

There’s a pressing public demand for the publication of all names of those who have heavily borrowed and defaulted from these collapsed Financial Institutions, shedding light on the extent of financial mismanagement and its impact on Zambia’s economy.
