Woman convicted after her confession to her pastor was used as evidence in court

0

Ajury in Louisiana found a 44-year-old woman guilty of attempted first-degree murder and home invasion after she stabbed her fiancé’s other girlfriend with a box-cutter. Per WAFB, Peggy Valentine’s confession to her pastor in the wake of the incident was used as evidence in court.

But her attorney, David Belfield III, argued there was “no sign of forced entry, no doors broken, no windows broken” when Valentine went to the victim’s home on May 4, 2022. “Somebody had to open the door,” Belfield said.

Belfield also claimed Valentine did not go to the house uninvited, adding that she was trying to patch things up after the victim and her fiancé welcomed a baby. “When she found out about the baby, she went to the house with a relative and brought the baby some clothing,” Belfield claimed. “In her mind, they’re still trying to work the relationship out.”

But the prosecutor, Ascension Parish Assistant District Attorney Brant Mayer, argued Valentine forced her way into the home and assaulted the victim as she was sleeping. Belfield, however, claimed Valentine was invited into the home before she and the victim got into a struggle.

In the wake of the incident, Valentine is said to have gotten in touch with her pastor. The pastor, who is also a Major for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, advised the convicted woman to inform investigators about what had occurred. Belfield also argued Valentine willingly spoke to the investigators because she felt she acted out of self-defense.

“It was obvious they had interrogated Peggy for a moment. She was very, very distraught at the time. She stopped talking to him, shut down and demanded to speak to her pastor,” her attorney claimed.

Valentine is said to have spoken to her pastor in the presence of another deputy. And though she admitted that she went to the house in an attempt to catch the victim with her fiancé, her attorney tried to have that conversation redacted on the grounds of pastor privilege, WAFB reported.

“Are you working as a pastor or a deputy? He never once told her, ‘Peggy, you have to be careful in what you say because I’m working as a police officer. What you say will be used against you,’” Belfield argued. “You wouldn’t sit in the room while she was talking to her lawyer, then why would you sit in the room talking to her pastor?”

Belfield also cited three points for the pastor protection clause, firstly saying that the pastor must be a certified religious leader. Valentine’s attorney secondly argued that “there was no question” Valentine was “seeking spiritual guidance.” He lastly claimed the conversation has to be in confidentiality.

THEFT OF CATTLE BEING NON BAILABLE:Here Is Where I Have A Problem- Binwell Mpundu

THEFT OF CATTLE BEING NON BAILABLE.

HERE IS WHERE I HAVE A PROBLEM.

1.Zambia has been built principally from copper ,even though gold and emerals is more valuable than copper which is also more valuable than cattle ,we can safely say that Copper has been our most treasured resource.
Copper thefts are very rampant and we lose millions throught such thefts.COPPER THEFT REMAINS A BAILABLE OFFENCE and so is Gold and other precious minerals.

2.Motor vehicles are ow⁴ned by many Zambians in every region of this country and the price of one vehicle cannot be compared to the price of one cow or a goat.Motor vehicle theft was Non bailable but the law was amended to make it bailable because the law in the first place was made non bailable because the crafters of the law were targeting some individuals. The lesson is that a law must never be made targeting an individual or individuals.

3.The presumption of innocence holds that a person is innocent when suspected to have committed a crime until hes proven guilty. The arguments that cases must be made bailable is so as to deter excessive punishment before one is convicted..A lot of people who have been suspected of committing crimes that are not bailable have spent years in Prison walls only to be declared innocent .. but imagine the the suffering they are subjected to…

The argument here is not that Cattle thieves should not be harshly punished ,they should be severely punished because even cattle is valuable but the contention is making suspects of cattle thefts spend years in prison ..

4.This law will cause trouble in areas where they practice open grazing .There are areas where anyone can take their animals to graze and it is possible that one animal can stray into another group of cattle and anyone can simply allege that another has stole their cow and by the time the courts would have been proving otherwise ,the accused would have languished in prison walls .

THE LAW MUST NEVER BE TRARGETED AND WE ARE MOVING TOWARDS LESS AND MORE HUMANE OFFENDER MANAGEMENT AND SO THIS PROPOSED LAW IS RETROGRESSIVE.

Chella Tukuta issue, is far deeper than meets the eye

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Recently fired diplomat,Cornelius Mulenga(Chella Tukuta) issued a statement thanking President Hakainde Hichilema for giving him a job as Deputy Editor in Charge of Photography at the Zambia Daily Mail.

The position doesn’t exist at the Daily Mail.

Permanent Secretary of Information and Media, Thabo Kawana immediately dispelled Tukuta’s assertions depicting them as delusional.

But we must remember that Thabo Kawana, Clayson Hamasaka and now Chella Tukuta were all irregularly appointed to positions that do not even exist in the approved Government Staff Establishment.

Remember there are currently more Permanent Secretaries at Cabinet Office on Special Duties than is provided for in the Establishment.

There are currently over 250 senior civil servants unfairly removed from their positions and surrendered to Public Service Managemment Division (PSMD).

We have strangers and foreigners at State House from Brenthurst Foundation and Tony Blair Foundation, illegally accessing and interacting with top secret and confidential documents and designing and implementing public policies.

We have an active combatant unit of the US Army (AFRICOM) illegally part of the Defence forces.

This trend is just a small pattern of extensive constitutional, law, regulations and procedural breaches and violations that President Hakainde Hichilema is engaged in.

President Hichilema has repeatedly expressed disdain for regulations and procedures claiming that the bureaucracy hinder his goal to foster national development.

He doesn’t realize that the regulations and procedures are an investment made for decades to prevent theft and looting of public resources and to prevent the abuse of authority and office.

From the dismissal of Lillian Shawa-Siyuni as DPP, Judges and other constitutional office holders to the violations as seen in the Kwacha, Kabushi constituency by-elections to the abuse of the Public Order Act, the violation of tender processes and attempts to steal, kill and destroy the Opposition and the Patriotic Front in particular, President Hichilema is engaged in full dictatorial and authoritarian tendencies.

I bet you that even if a President cannot appoint a junior official in a company, President Hichilema has appointed Chella Tukuta as Deputy Editor in Charge of Photography.

PRESS STATEMENT

INSTALLATION OF DR. AKASHAMBATWA MBIKUSITA LEWANIKA:
“SENIOR CHIEF FOR KAOMA, NKEYEMA AND LUAMPA DISTRICTS OF
WESTERN PROVINCE: NKOYA ROYAL ESTABLISHMENT POSITION

On Friday October 27th 2023, we received news that The Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II had installed Dr. Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika as Senior Chief for Naliele Palace to oversee Kaoma, Nkeyema and Luampa Districts, which is contrary to the situation in the Kaoma cluster as traditional leadership and management is under the jurisdiction of The Nkoya Royal Establishment headed by Their Royal Highnesses’ Chief Mwene Kahare and Chief Mwene Mutondo.

The Nkoya Royal Council and Kazanga Cultural Association on behalf of the Nkoya Royal Establishment wishes to protest in the strongest term on such interference in Mankoya Land by the Barotse Royal Establishment.

It is with a lot of anguish and dismay to note that Ngambela Mukela Manyando thinks that The Nkoya Royal Establishment is answerable to The Barotse Royal Establishment.

The three districts mentioned here are not in the jurisdiction of the Barotse Royal Establishment.

These districts are under the jurisdiction of Chief’s Mwene Mutondo and Mwene Kahare.

We wish to challenge the Barotse Royal Establishment by whose authority they have proceeded to Install Dr. Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika as chief for Kaoma, Nkeyema and Luampa.

We hereby remind the Establishment about Court of Appeal Judgement that was delivered on 30th January 2020. This being the case where Edward Mbombola Moyo suing as Chief Mutondo sued Prince Makweti Isiteketo as Senior Chief Amukena of Naliele.

Among other issues:

a. A declaration was being sort that the 1st defendant’s (Senior Chief Amukena) area of jurisdiction Naliele village is in chief Mutondo’s area and under Chief Mutondo’s control and jurisdiction.

b. A declaration that the 1st defendant being Senior Chief Amukena of the Lozi people at
Naliele village has no area of jurisdiction in Kaoma District as there are already Nkoya Chiefs.

c. An order restraining the 1st defendant or successors in title from performing the functions of a Chief in Chief Mutondo’s area of jurisdiction.

This matter was adjudged and upheld by The Court of Appeal as follows:

i. The statutory instrument recognizing Chief Amukena gives him control only over Naliele village which is 100 metres in radius.

Court of Appeal Case no. 168/2017 refers.
We also hereby state that this appointment is limited only to The Naliele Village and thus has no authority to preside over Kaoma, Nkeyema and Luampa districts.

We feel this will be cause for anarchy and lay the ground for subjugation of Nkoyas by the Lozis a situation that we shall not allow to happen.

Thank you,

Signed

5-star hotel in California sued for serving woman with bottled water containing a man’s s3m3n

0

A woman has filed a lawsuit against a prestigious 5-star hotel after a laboratory analysis confirmed that the bottled water she purchased at the establishment was tainted with human semen.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe, is an American citizen who, along with her husband, John Doe, stayed at the upscale Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Half Moon Bay, California, for a four-night visit in November.

During their stay, an incident occurred where a hotel staff member provided Jane Doe with water that was later discovered to be contaminated.

While at the hotel, Jane Doe had requested water, and a member of the hotel staff delivered several bottles. She placed one of these bottles on the nightstand beside her bed and went to sleep.

Later in the night, she woke up feeling thirsty and decided to drink some water from the bottle. It was at this point that she noticed an unusual taste, leading to her realization that the water was not as it should have been.

“She opened it, took a drink, and knew immediately that something was wrong with the liquid she had just swallowed. Jane Doe was mortified, terrified, embarrassed, and humiliated, but shared her suspicion with her husband, who then asked the hotel security and management representatives to call the police,” Jane Doe’s lawyers are quoted to have said in a lawsuit.

Upon the arrival of the police, Jane and John expressed their suspicion that the water they had been served was potentially tainted with semen. Their serious accusation prompted the law enforcement officers to collect a sample for laboratory analysis.

To the astonishment of all parties involved, the laboratory test unequivocally validated the couple’s claim, confirming that the water they had consumed was indeed contaminated with human semen.

“The Ritz-Carlton subsequently sent the water bottle to a laboratory for analysis, and the testing confirmed that the water contained semen,” court documents are quoted to have revealed.

Interestingly, reports say Ritz-Carlton has refused to “disclose the identities of the hotel employees on duty that day so that their backgrounds and criminal histories can be scrutinized.”

In the lawsuit filed on October 12, Jane Doe said her experience at the hotel left her feeling “anguish, nervousness, anxiety, grief, worry, shock, humiliation, and embarrassment.”

In her legal action, she has filed charges against the hotel, including accusations of sexual battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and the loss of consortium.

Over 20 Ukrainian soldiers were killed when Russian missiles hit a military awards ceremony in a city on the frontlines in eastern Ukraine.

Twenty-eight soldiers from the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade were killed when missiles hit an awards ceremony in the Zaporizhzhia region. More than 50 soldiers and civilians were injured in the incident.

Ukrainian MP Aleksey Kucherenko posted on Facebook that 28 people lost their lives and over 53 got injured. However, the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed yet.

According to sources, the soldiers from the assault brigade came together in the village near the battlefront to celebrate Missile Forces Day.

Ruslan Kaganets, leader of the Solnyshko volunteer group, said: ‘The Russians attacked while our team was in line, and many officers and soldiers got hurt or killed. ‘

President Zelensky said that they will investigate the deaths of the soldiers.

He said: ‘This is a sad event that didn’t have to happen. ‘ What is most important is to find out exactly what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future.

Viktor Mykyta, who is in charge of Zakarpattia state administration, has requested that people in the region avoid participating in any fun activities, concerts, or other events as they mourn.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators attempt to overrun Turkish US military facility

0

This is the troubling moment when supporters of Palestine attempted to forcefully enter a United States military base located in Turkey, which is a member of NATO.

Fights broke out outside the Incirlik Air Base in the city of Adana today. A few hundred people gathered to support Gazans who are being hurt by Israel’s bombings.

A video on social media showed them sprinting on a dirty field while holding flags from Turkey and Palestine.
The protesters broke through barriers and threw plastic chairs and rocks at the Turkish police.

Police officers in protective gear stayed strong, hitting people with their sticks during close fights and using strong water sprays and tear gas against the crowd.

Videos show people running in the opposite way and trying to keep safe from the water blast.

The protest was arranged by a Turkish aid organization called IHH. It took place shortly before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was scheduled to have discussions about the crisis in Gaza in Ankara.
The president of IHH, Bulent Yildirim, spoke to a crowd in Adana and asked them not to harm the police.

“My friends, it is not right to throw rocks or engage in similar actions because it may lead to the police and soldiers going to Gaza to fight. They will go there when the appropriate time comes,” he explained.

We are very angry. We can’t keep it inside.

The IHH stopped the rally earlier than planned because of fights with the police.
Turkey has been criticizing Israel more as the situation in Gaza gets worse. They support the idea of two separate states for Israel and Palestine and are hosting members of a group called Hamas, who fight for Palestinian rights.

Since the fighting started about a month ago and as more and more civilians are being killed, people in the country have started protesting.

Last month, he organized a very big gathering in Istanbul and claimed that 1. 5 million people were present. He criticized Israel, calling them an ‘occupier’ and accused them of behaving like a ‘war criminal’.

Turkey announced on Saturday that it is calling its ambassador back from Israel for discussions and cutting off communication with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Erdogan blames Netanyahu for the harm caused to civilians and holds him personally responsible.

Palestinian activist detained ‘after slaughter call’

0

Ahed Tamimi, a well-known Palestinian activist, was taken into custody by Israeli authorities in the occupied West Bank.

Ms Tamimi, who is 22 years old, was kept in custody for one night in the village of Nabi Saleh, reported the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society.

The military in Israel said to AFP news agency that they believed she was encouraging violence and terrorist actions.

Israeli news outlets said that Ms Tamimi was taken into custody because she made a threatening post on Instagram where she talked about killing Jewish settlers.

“[When comparing], she allegedly wrote that what Hitler did to you was something trivial,” the newspaper Haaretz reported. The statement refers to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany’s killing of six million Jews during the Holocaust.

The post and the account with Ms Tamimi’s name and photo cannot be seen online anymore.

Israel’s ultra-conservative Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, shared a picture on X(formerlyTwitter) that seemed to depict an Israeli soldier holding Ahed Tamimi in a bedroom.

He said she showed”compassion and support for the Nazi people on social media” and promised:”No acceptance of terrorists and people who support terrorism. “

However, Ms Tamimi’s mother, Nariman, said that she didn’t write the post.

As a teenager, Ahed Tamimi came to represent resistance against Israel’s occupation around the world.

In 2015, a teenager who was 14 years old at that time was caught on camera biting an Israeli soldier. The soldier was trying to capture her younger brother.

Two years later, she got arrested because she was caught on camera hitting and kicking an Israeli soldier during a fight near her house. She was given a punishment of eight months in jail by an Israeli court.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society stated that Ms. Tamimi was one of 70 Palestinians who were taken into custody during Israeli raids in the West Bank and East Jerusalem on Sunday night.

SinceOctober7th, there have been a total of 2,150 people detained in that place. This all started when gunmen from Hamas in Gaza attacked Israel, resulting in the death of 1,400 individuals and 240 being held as hostages.

Israel has been attacking Gaza without stopping and they have also sent soldiers on the ground for over a week now in order to try to wipe out Hamas. Over 9,700 people have died in Gaza, according to the health ministry controlled by Hamas.

There has been a sudden increase in violent incidents happening in the West Bank.

The United Nations says that 141 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces. This mostly happened when there were fights after Israeli forces searched and arrested people or during protests supporting Gaza.

Two Israelis have died because of Palestinians in the same time frame.

Around 600,000 Jewish people currently live in 140 communities that were established after Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Many countries believe that the settlements go against international laws, but Israel disagrees.

US secretly supplying Taiwan with military hardware

0

When President Joe Biden of the United States recently approved a $80 million grant to Taiwan for buying American military equipment, China expressed strong disapproval and opposition towards the decision made by Washington.

To someone who didn’t look closely, it didn’t seem like a lot of money. It cost less than one modern fighter jet. Taiwan has ordered over $14 billion worth of military equipment from the United States. Is an additional $80 million important.

Beijing usually gets angry when other countries offer military support to Taiwan, but this time they reacted differently.

The $80m is not money that needs to be paid back. It is paid for by American taxpayers. For the first time in over 40 years, the United States is using its own funds to send weapons to a location that it does not officially acknowledge. This is happening through a program called foreign military finance (FMF).

After Russia attacked Ukraine last year, FMF provided approximately $4bn of military support to Kyiv.

This money has been sent to Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Egypt, and other places. But so far, it has only been given to countries or organizations that the United Nations acknowledges. Taiwan is not present.

After the United States started acknowledging China instead of Taiwan in 1979, it still sold weapons to Taiwan according to the Taiwan Relations Act. The goal was to sell a specific amount of weapons to Taiwan, enough for their defense against China, but not too many to harm the relationship between the United States and China. For many years, the US has used a strategy of not clearly stating their position to work with China, while also supporting Taiwan strongly.

But over the past ten years, China has become much stronger than Taiwan in terms of military power. The old formula doesn’t work anymore. Washington says that its policy is still the same, but it has actually changed in important ways. The US State Department has denied that providing FMF implies acknowledging Taiwan in any way.

However, it is clear in Taipei that America is changing its relationship with the island. This is especially true because the United States is urgently encouraging Taiwan to increase its military strength. Taiwan is not as powerful as China and requires assistance.

The US is saying that it is very important for us to make our military stronger. Wang Ting-yu, a legislator from the ruling party in Taiwan who is close to President Tsai Ing-wen, says that we are sending a strong and clear message to Beijing that we are united with US Congressional leaders.

He says that the $80 million is just a small part of what could be a much larger amount. He also points out that in July, President Biden gave permission for the sale of military services and equipment worth $500 million to Taiwan.

Mr Wang said that Taiwan is getting ready to send two groups of soldiers to the US for training. This hasn’t happened since the 1970s.

However, the most important thing is the money. According to him, this could be the start of receiving as much as $10 billion in the next five years.

According to Lai I-Ching, the president of a think-tank called the Prospect Foundation, it can take as long as 10 years to finalize agreements for military equipment. “With FMF, the US is giving weapons directly from its own supplies and paying for it with US funds – so we don’t have to go through all the steps to get approval. ”

This is important because even though a divided Congress has delayed giving Ukraine billions of dollars in aid, Taiwan seems to have more agreement and support from both sides.

However, the war in Gaza will definitely limit America’s ability to provide weapons to Taipei, just like the war in Ukraine did. President Biden wants to give support to Ukraine and Israel during times of conflict. This may involve providing additional financial assistance to Taiwan as well.

When asked about how the money from the US will be used, the Ministry of National Defence in Taipei refuses to say and just smiles without giving any information.

However, Lai believes it is possible to make educated guesses about the effectiveness of weapons like the Javelin and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. These weapons are highly effective and forces can quickly learn how to use them.

“He says that we don’t have enough of them and we really need a large quantity. ” In Ukraine, the Stingers have been used up very fast, and the way Ukraine has been using them shows that we might need 10 times more than what we have right now.

The experts who have been observing for a long time have a straightforward opinion: the island is unprepared for an attack from China and in a very bad condition.

There are many problems. Taiwan’s army has many old battle tanks, but not enough new, lightweight missile systems. The way the army is organized, how they plan their strategies, and their teachings have not been changed for 50 years. Some front-line units do not have enough people, they only have 60% of the number of people they should have.

According to reports, Taiwan doesn’t have any counter-intelligence operations in China and its system for selecting people to serve in the military is not working properly.

In 2013, Taiwan reduced the time people have to serve in the military from one year to four months. However, they have now decided to increase it back to 12 months, starting from next year. However, there are more difficult problems or obstacles to overcome. The young men who go through it playfully call it a “summer camp”.

A recent graduate said that there was no consistent training. We used to visit a place where people practice shooting every two weeks, and we used old guns from the 1970s. We aimed at objects and fired. However, nobody was taught how to aim correctly, so everyone kept failing to hit their targets. We didn’t do any exercise. There is a test to check our fitness at the end, but we didn’t get ready for it.

He explained a situation where older army leaders don’t care about or want to teach these young men, mostly because they will only be there for a short period of time.

Many people in Washington believe that Taiwan needs to quickly improve and strengthen its military. So, the US is now helping to train Taiwan’s army.

For a long time, the leaders of the island have believed that it is very hard and dangerous for China to try to invade it. Similar to Britain, Taiwan focused on building up its navy and air force instead of its army.

The plan was to get them involved in the Taiwan Strait and destroy them on the beaches. Lai says that we are investing many resources in protecting the air and sea.

However, China now possesses the biggest navy in the world and a much stronger air force. A study done by a group of experts last year found that if Taiwan were to fight against China, its navy and air force would be completely destroyed in the first 96 hours of the battle.

Because of strong pressure from Washington, Taipei is moving towards a strategy called “fortress Taiwan. ” This strategy aims to make it very hard for China to take control of the island.

The attention will change to soldiers on foot, soldiers who fight on land, and big guns – pushing back against an attack on the beaches and, if needed, battling the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the towns and cities, and from bases far inside the island’s jungle-covered mountains. However, this places the duty of protecting Taiwan back onto its obsolete military force.

After the US ended our communications in 1979, our army was mainly alone and cut off from the rest of the world. Lai says that they are stuck following the military beliefs and strategies used during the Vietnam War in the United States.

This didn’t concern Taipei or Washington until recently. During the 1990s and 2000s, companies from Taiwan and the United States were constructing factories throughout China.

Beijing wanted to be part of the World Trade Organization, so they worked to become a member. And they succeeded. The Chinese economy became popular worldwide, and the US believed that trading and investing would help keep peace in the Taiwan Strait.

But the increasing power of Xi Jinping, his form of patriotism, and Russia’s attack on Ukraine have shattered those comforting beliefs.

Taiwan has been very surprised by the things they learned from Ukraine’s invasion. Artillery has been very successful in war because it can shoot a lot of bullets quickly and hit targets very accurately, which is very frightening for the enemy.

Ukrainian teams have discovered that they need to keep moving right after they shoot their shells. If they stay in the same place for too long, the Russians will react by firing shells back at them.

Many of Taiwan’s artillery soldiers use old guns from Vietnam War or even World War Two. These items are moved by hand and it is hard and takes a long time to do so. They would be very easy targets.

Taiwan’s openness to potential harm is making Washington take action. That’s the reason why soldiers from Taiwan are being sent to the US for training, and instructors from the US are coming to Taipei to work closely with Taiwan’s marines and special forces.
However, according to William Chung, a researcher in Taipei, Taiwan cannot rely on itself alone to prevent China from taking action. This is another thing we can learn from the war in Ukraine.

“He says that the international society needs to decide if Taiwan is important. ” “If the G7 or NATO believe that Taiwan is important for their own benefits, then we need to involve other countries in the Taiwan situation – because this will make China reconsider the consequences. ”

Dr Chung says that China’s actions have unintentionally been supporting Taiwan to achieve its goals.

China is trying to expand its power and control in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. And we can see the outcome in Japan where the amount of money spent on the military is now being increased by two times.

He says that the outcome is changing the relationships between countries in the area. It includes important meetings between the US, Japan, and South Korea, stronger military agreements like the Quad and Aukus, and closer connections between the US and the Philippines.

“He says China is attempting to alter the current situation in the region. ” This means that Taiwan’s security is linked to the South China Sea and East China Sea. This means that we are no longer alone or separated from others.

There is currently a heated discussion in Washington about how much support the US should provide to Taiwan. Many people who have been observing China for a long time believe that if the US publicly commits to something, it would anger Beijing instead of stopping its actions. However, Washington is aware that Taiwan cannot protect itself on its own.

Someone who has been paying attention to China for a long time said that we should stay quiet about our plans, but still give Taiwan a lot of weapons.

There is no ‘stalemate’ in the confrontation with Russia – Zelensky

0

The disagreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his military leaders are becoming more evident to the public. They have been arguing openly about the situation in the war with Russia.

Igor Zhovka, who is a deputy leader of Zelensky’s office, criticized a statement made by Ukraine’s military leader. The statement said that the war with Russia is at a standstill. This has caused tensions in Kyiv and raised concerns about Western support for the conflict.

He was replying to an interview with top military official Valery Zaluzhny. The military official said that we have reached a point in technology where neither side in the war has an advantage and it is unlikely that there will be any significant new developments.

Zhovka said on Ukrainian TV that the Russians will thoroughly read, write down, and analyze Zaluzhny’s interview. He said he got calls from colleagues in other countries who were very worried and wanted to know if the war was really at a point where no progress was being made.

Maybe this is a really smart plan, and we will have some success doing it. But honestly, I am very surprised,” Zhovka said.

The tensions are happening at an important time in the war. The slow counter-attack from Kyiv and the violence in the Middle East are causing worries that the Western financial and military help could decrease.

Zelensky disagreed with Zaluzhnyi’s opinion during a press conference with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday. However, he acknowledged that people are exhausted after being at war for 18 months.

People are feeling very tired. Everyone is feeling sleepy or lacking energy. People have different opinions. But everyone is the same as a person, no matter what their status is. However, this does not mean that there is no solution to the situation. I want to make this clear again. We have already discussed this. Zelensky said this is not news.

We should come together and fix the problems, collaborate more with our allies on protecting the airspace, open up the skies again, and empower our team to take aggressive actions. This is something we should consider. Just only this. This text is not about our future location. “But now,” explained Zelensky.

Zaluzhny talked about what Ukraine should do and the kind of help they need from partners to overcome challenges.

However, the way he described the conflict made people in Ukraine question and gained attention from the media worldwide. The interview with Zelensky, given to TIME, made the Ukrainian president seem more and more alone.

“I have the strongest belief in our victory, even when everyone else may doubt it. ” Nobody, according to Zelensky in his conversation with TIME, it is challenging to convince Ukraine’s allies to believe in the same things, and it requires a lot of effort and dedication.

People are getting very tired of the war. It feels like it’s a never-ending feeling that keeps getting worse. Zelensky said, “You can witness this in the United States, in Europe. ”

He said that the war between Israel and Hamas has taken focus away from Ukraine’s fight against Russia, making it harder to keep other countries interested in helping Ukraine.

Certainly, we suffer negative consequences from the happenings in the Middle East. Zelensky said that people are dying and the world needs to help there to save lives.

He made additional comments while von der Leyen was visiting Kyiv on Saturday.

The war in the Middle East is very clear and it distracts everyone’s attention. I believe that one of the goals of the Russian Federation is to achieve something, and this is definitely true. “We observe the results,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader recently showed support for Israel after the Hamas attacks on October 7. He suggested that leaders from around the world should visit Israel and offer help to the people who have been affected by these terrorist attacks.

Ukraine is currently facing a challenging situation as it tries to fight back against Russian forces in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

Kyiv was able to attack from the air and successfully hit a shipyard in the city of Kerch, located in the Russian-held Crimean peninsula.

The leader of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleschuk, praised and congratulated the pilots who carried out the attacks in a message on Telegram. A person in charge from Russia said that a place where ships are built was attacked, but the weapons from the sky stopped the missiles from hitting their target. CNN cannot confirm or check either of the statements on its own.

The Crimean Bridge, which is also called the Kerch Bridge, was closed for two hours on Saturday and no vehicles were allowed to pass during that time. Russian government did not explain why they closed the road that connects mainland Russia to the occupied peninsula.

Australia’s PM praises China development following discussions

0

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that there has been notable improvement in relations with China following discussions with President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Mr Albanese arrived in Shanghai on Saturday. He is the first Australian leader to go to China since 2016.

The four-day visit is seen as an important step towards improving relations, after a series of disagreements over trade and security.

Trade is very important- Mr. Albanese wants Chinese tariffs on Australian goods to be stopped.

Mr Xi was expected to request permission to have more involvement in important Australian industries.

Both men promised to keep working together for the benefit of their countries, even though they had disagreements in the past.

President Xi welcomed Mr. Albanese to the Great Hall of the People. He said that China and Australia have the potential to become trusting partners and are on the right path to improving and developing their relationship. This was reported by state broadcaster CCTV.

Mr Xi told Mr Albanese that Beijing wants to maximize the benefits of the China-Australia free trade agreement.

Before their discussions, Mr. Albanese explained to reporters that we should work together with China when possible, but also express our disagreements when necessary and participate in things that benefit our country.
I believe there are encouraging indications. We have already seen some barriers to trade between our countries being removed, and there has been a significant increase in trade between our countries.

He is going on a trip after tensions between Australia and China. This was because Australia wanted to investigate where the pandemic came from, and China responded with sanctions on Australian exports like beef, wine, and barley.

This also happens at the same time as the 50-year anniversary of when Gough Whitlam, an important Australian leader, went to China to meet with Mao Zedong in 1973. It was the first time an Australian prime minister visited China after the two countries started having official relationships.

Reporters asked Mr Albanese if Australia can “trust” China. He answered that his previous interactions with Mr Xi have been “good” and “helpful”.

However, we understand that we have different ways of governing, different beliefs and principles, and different past events that shape our societies. But we judge and interact with each other based solely on our appearances and first impressions.

However, there are many issues and worries about safety that need to be resolved in the talks happening on Monday.

Yang Hengjun is an Australian writer who has been held in prison in China since 2019. His health is getting worse, and there are people in Australia asking their leader, Mr. Albanese, to help get him released.

Experts say that Canberra’s increasing military relationship with the United States and its recent changes to its defense strategy, which are believed to be aimed at countering China, may create challenges in finding common ground between the two countries, other than their economic interests.
Some experts think that Beijing might want to get more access to Australia’s resources and renewable energy industries. However, the Australian government has been taking steps to prevent Chinese companies from owning important minerals and mining projects.

Mr Albanese said to the reporters that he was happy with the way Australia and China talked and worked together during the meeting.

He mentioned that Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the troubles in the Middle East were discussed during the meeting. However, they did not talk about the “14 issues” that China had with Australia when their relationship was in a bad state.

Mr Albanese said it was important to talk about guardrails and military collaboration between the United States and China.

HH CAN TRY TO HIDE BUT HIS FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER THE HAPPENINGS IN PF – DR M’MEMBE

HH CAN TRY TO HIDE BUT HIS FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER THE HAPPENINGS IN PF – DR M’MEMBE

… he adds that the problems in PF can be resolved by PF if the atmosphere is favorable

Lusaka, Monday, November 6, 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Leader of the opposition Socialist Party has maintained that President Hakainde Hichilema and the United Party for National Development (UPND) are responsible for the drama currently obtaining in the former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party.

Dr M’membe said the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema can try to remain mute on the matter and hide but their fingerprints are there.

The opposition leader argued that there is no way President Hichilema can hide from what is happening to the PF.

“It is a desperate way of trying to create a one party state. This multiparty democracy, people fought for it. There was multiparty democracy at independence, it disappeared. After some time, people realized we could not continue with one party state, and they fought for it,” he said.

“I was one of them. I was one of the people who went to Garden Hotel on the 20th of July and the 21st of July in 1990 and waged struggle to have a multiparty political dispensation back. We will not allow to see the destruction of something people strived for, for a long and in a difficult way. Mr Hakainde was not there. Mr Hakainde and his friends did not participate in the reintroduction of multiparty politics. They may not like the PF and they are entitled to not like the PF, but the PF have a right to exist, whether they like it or not.”

Dr M’membe said the PF does not exist at the mercy or discretion of the UPND.

He schooled the ruling party that multiparty politics is about competing for power.

The SP President said the destruction of the PF is not just about the PF but about all Zambians.

“All citizens of good will should stand up and oppose this. We have enough problems, there is a problem of mealie meal, there is a problem of general cost of living, and they don’t want people to talk about those things. There are no medicines in the hospital, all those that are concerned about those people who rule this country today is their personal deals, to increase their personal wealth, to become millionaires and billionaires, through corruption, through theft,” he said.

“Some of them were even getting into deals before they got into government. Support us, give us money, when we get into government we will give you contracts to supply oil, we will give you contracts to supply fertilizer. They had even the audacity to sign such agreements before getting into power, this is the kind of government you have.”

He said whatever problem the PF might have had cannot justify what happened.

“There is no organisation without problems. The UPND itself has numerous challenges. Does it justify the destruction of the UPND? Which institution in this country doesn’t have problems? Even the churches have got problems, can that justify the destruction of the church? Traditional institutions have got challenges; can that justify their destruction? This government has problems, numerous problems. Can that justify the destruction of this government? Or its removal by unjustified means?” he asked in fury.

“Would you allow a coup in Zambia because the government is troubled? No. There are ways to deal with problems. You don’t destroy an institution because it has problems, then you turn around and say they destroyed themselves. They didn’t destroy themselves. PF has not destroyed itself. It has problems. The ones who are trying to destroy the PF it is Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his clique. Given a favorable atmosphere, PF can sort out its problems, the same way all other institutions that are troubled. If they are given a favorable atmosphere, they will sort out their problems. There is no need to strangulate them, to assassinate them… if they commit suicide, that is their problem. But don’t kill them. The problems in PF can be resolved by PF if the atmosphere is favorable.”

Commenting on the newly appointment of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), Dr M’membe charged that Mr Brown Kasaro is a criminal.

“Kasaro is a criminal. Brown Kasaro is a criminal. And I cant understand, we have commissioners who were there when Kasaro was being discharged, was being fired, and they allow Kasaro to come back,” he said.

“Who doesn’t know at that commission what Kasaro did? We can excuse maybe two new commissioners. The three commissioners who were there know who Kasaro is. We will not allow Kasaro to come back. And it is better we don’t go to a big conflict over a small individual. Who is Kasaro? Let him just go back and do what he was doing.”

UPND members across the country have expressed anger over the reappointment of Chellah Tukuta

0

United Party for National Development (UPND) members across the country have expressed anger over the reappointment of Chellah Tukuta Photography by government, following his recalling from Diplomatic service few weeks ago.

According to insiders in UPND, Tukuta has allegedly blackmailed the ruling party by threatening to denounce them.

Members of the UPND in various WhatsApp groups and Facebook have gone public to denounce the reappointment of Tukuta.

“We will all now go rogue and start denouncing them” Cheelo Paulo Chiilabalika Katambo who is UPND Media team member wrote on his Facebook.

Tukuta was first employed as Presidential Photographer and worked at State House briefly before being sent into diplomatic service, in Brazil where he was demoted to an office assistant level.

The “demotion came as a result of Tukuta’s unbecoming behavior” , a State House aid has told !CountryTimes●.

When Tukuta went to Brazil, he continued to publicize his bad behavior on social media where he picked fights with different people in Zambia. His mouth led him to be recalled.

On the day Tukuta recieved his termination of employment letter, he went on social media to declare that he doesn’t need a government job, and that he was doing fine with his cameras.

“At least am free. I was never free and you must all know that I don’t need a job to live a good life. I earn so much from my Photography works” he stated on his Facebook page.

And Tukuta complained of being treated badly and differently by the UPND over his firing. He went on to accuse the ruling party of being tribal. He said he was going to start talking and representing people.

The Photographer also acknowledged that Zambian people are suffering. He said he weilds so much influence in Zambia and that “it is time to expose corruption and tribalism in Zambia”

“When I was out I thought things were okay in Zambia but having interacted with Zambians, I know they are suffering. This are bad” He said.

However, it seems Hakainde Hichilema fears what Tukuta has to say. Government has hastily reappointed the Photographer to work at Daily Mail.

Tukuta himself confirmed this through his Facebook post:

“Thank you President Hakainde Hichilema for my new appointment as Deputy Editor in charge of Photography and Chief Photographer at the Zambia Daily Mail”

UPND Govt Fails to Manage Zambia’s Economy further Recklessly Reduces Money in Circulation

Press Statement:

UPND Government Fails to Manage Zambia’s Economy further Recklessly Reduces Money in Circulation

[6th November, 2023]

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) expresses deep dismay and concern at the UPND government’s inability to successfully manage Zambia’s economy, particularly in light of the recent increase in the statutory reserve ratio and its implications.

The decision made by the Bank of Zambia on November 6, 2023, to increase the minimum statutory reserve ratio on both local and foreign currency deposits by 3 percentage points to 14.5 percent, effective from November 13, 2023, raises serious concerns about the government’s economic mismanagement.

We must not ignore the fact that this is not the first time such a decision has been made.

In February 2023, a similar increase in the statutory reserve ratio of 2.5 percentage points to 11.5 percent was implemented.

Despite these measures, the exchange rate has continued to depreciate, signaling the failure of the UPND government’s attempts to stabilize the foreign exchange market.

The increase in the statutory reserve ratio is meant to address the persistent foreign exchange market pressure and rein in inflation.

However, the consequences of this decision are severe and detrimental to the economy.

The negative effects include decreased credit availability, increased cost of borrowing, liquidity constraints within the banking system, contractionary impact on economic activity, and inflationary pressures.

The reduction in credit availability and the higher borrowing costs will hamper private investment and economic growth and lead to limited job creation.

This demonstrates the UPND government’s failure to support entrepreneurship and stimulate economic growth.

Furthermore, the liquidity constraints resulting from the increased statutory reserve ratio pose a threat to the stability of the financial system.

The inability of financial institutions to meet customer demands and potential liquidity shortages can trigger financial instability and erode confidence in the banking sector.

We are deeply concerned about the overall contractionary impact on the economy due to reduced access to credit, higher borrowing costs, and tightened liquidity.

This will limit consumption and investment, leading to increased unemployment and reduced standards of living for Zambians.

Additionally, the increased statutory reserve ratio may have unintended consequences, such as inflationary pressures.

The scarcity of goods and services resulting from reduced liquidity can cause prices to rise, undermining the purchasing power of consumers and worsening the economic challenges faced by the country.

The EFF urges the UPND government to reassess its economic policies and take immediate action to address the growing concerns regarding the mismanagement of Zambia’s economy.

The failure to strike a balance between managing exchange rate depreciation and safeguarding overall economic stability will have severe consequences for the long-term growth and prosperity of the nation.

We call on the UPND government to prioritize the well-being of the Zambian people and consult economic experts to implement effective policies that will promote sustainable economic growth, job creation, and ensure the stability of the financial system.

The EFF will closely monitor the situation and continue to advocate for economic policies that prioritize the interests of the people and guarantee their economic freedom.

Wherever we want to go our feet will take us there,

Kasonde Mwenda C.
President
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)

About the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF):
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is dedicated to promoting economic freedom, social justice, and equality for all citizens. The EFF is committed to holding the government accountable and advocating for the well-being of the Zambian people.

Museveni bans fuel procurement from Kenya

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has banned purchase of petroleum products from Kenya saying middlemen have for years been selling fuel to Uganda at inflated prices.

Museveni made the announcement in a post on social media platform X.

According to Museveni who has been ruling Uganda since 1986, when he got into Government he assumed that the civil servants would deal with money, administration and procurement issues and he would deal with issues such as policy, ideology, strategy, security but the civil servants have let down Ugandans on a number of occasions.

“Uganda imports petroleum products of the magnitude of 2.5billion litres per annum valued at about US$ 2bn.

“Without my knowledge, our wonderful People, were buying this huge quantity of petroleum products from middlemen in Kenya. A whole country buying from middlemen in Kenya or anywhere else!! Amazing but true.

“Why not buy from the Refineries abroad and transport through Kenya and Tanzania, cutting out the cost created by middlemen? Those involved were not bothered by these issues,” said Museveni.

He revealed that he was told about this practice through whistle-blowers and he delegated the issue to a minister but a year ago he got to know that the matter was never handled.

He added that he studied the issue and discovered that Uganda loses money by buying through the middlemen. According to Museveni, bulk suppliers or Refiners at East African ports sell diesel at $83 per tonne while middlemen sell the product to Uganda at $118 per tonne. For petrol, the price is $97.5 from middlemen while bulk suppliers or refiners’ price is $61.5

The Government of Uganda has since contracted bulk and refinery suppliers to sell fuel directly to the government at the lower prices.

“I have discussed this with H.E Ruto, the President of Kenya and our delegation is now in Dar-es-Salaam, discussing with Her Excellency Samia Suluhu. n a few years’ time, our Refinery will be up and running.

“I can assure the Inland East Africans of competitive petroleum products, free of distributions caused by middlemen. The whole of Uganda, North- Western Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Western Kenya, South Sudan and Eastern DRC, will benefit,” said Museveni.

LUANSHYA PASTOR FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE AFTER ATTEMPTING SUICIDE IN CHURCH

A 56-YEAR-OLD Pentecost Assemblies of God pastor of Luanshya is fighting for his life in a critical condition after reportedly attempting suicide by ingesting a toxic substance.

According to a suicide note, Anthony Mambeu allegedly tried to end his life due to what he described as 25 years of mistreatment by his wife in their marriage.

Before the suicide attempt, it is believed that the pastor had expressed his intention to resign from his pastoral duties to his wife and fellow pastors.

On the tragic day of the suicide attempt, he was discovered unconscious at the pulpit, leaving behind a note explaining his desperate act.

Copperbelt Province police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba disclosed that the incident happened yesterday on sunday at around 09:00 hours at the church.

Mweemba said the previous day, pastor Mambeu informed his wife of his desire to step down as the pastor.

He said the pastor subsequently made multiple phone calls to fellow pastors and church members regarding his resignation.

Mr Mweemba said on Sunday, November 5th, the pastor’s wife attempted to contact him but received no response.

He said at around 08:00 hours, the pastor called his wife and informed her that he was at the church.

“The wife then contacted Mr George Lungu to deliver the keys to the pastor at the church. Upon Mr Lungu’s arrival, he discovered that the church had already been opened. Upon entering, he found the Pastor unconscious at the pulpit with foam around his mouth. The matter was reported to Leonard Mpundu Police Station,” he added.

Mr Mweemba said when the police arrived at the scene, they discovered the unconscious pastor with foam around his mouth.

He said also found at the scene were a bottle of insecticide, water, the pastor’s ulcer medications, and a suicide note.

Mr Mweemba said the suicide note expressed gratitude to a few individuals and apologised to the church for the tragic manner of his death, further mentioning that his life was a sacrifice.

He said the note further revealed that the pastor had endured mistreatment from his wife for a quarter of a century.

“He was rushed to Thompson District Hospital for medical attention, where he is currently in an unstable condition,” Mr Mweemba said.

Congratulations, New Dawn Government! You’ve Birthed A Monster You Can’t Handle- Edwin Lifwekelo

CONGRATULATIONS, NEW DAWN GOVERNMENT! YOU’VE BIRTHED A MONSTER YOU CAN’T HANDLE

Lusaka Province…..6th November 2023

In these most spectacular times of political change, where the emergence of a “New Dawn Government” typically signals a utopia in governance, our current situation unveils a different reality. This new entity that was supposed to bring about positive change is hilariously nurturing a monster that’s as unmanageable as a bull in a china shop.

So, with a laundry list of promises and manifestos, the New Dawn Government rode into the public sphere on a wave of expectations. We, the optimistic citizens, expecting better governance, socio-economic stability, and transformative reforms, gazed at this new leadership with the kind of hope usually reserved for fairy tales. However, in their pursuit of power and change, they’ve accidentally brewed a potion of issues now spiraling out of control.

Whoa, kudos to the New Dawn Government! Their strategies, meant to bring us all together, are doing a stellar job in fanning the flames of division. Forget about bridging gaps; their policies and stories have managed to open chasms wider than the Grand Canyon, spreading discord and divisiveness like confetti at a party.

Oh, but please, the UPND government should be taking a bow for their impressive work! They shouldn’t assume we’ll just sit back and enjoy the show as they turn this country upside down. Nope, not happening.

Why bother following the rules when you can just shake them up and break them in the quest for a one-party state? Oh, we see your plans, and they’re about as transparent as a brick wall. Nice try, but that won’t fly either.

Remember those once-hopeful citizens? Yeah, they’re now dangling on the edge of disillusionment. The force that was supposed to lead us to a land of transformation has instead created a minefield of chaos.

New Dawn Government, perhaps you should throw a parade to celebrate the monster you’ve been fostering. How about admitting to your boo-boos, rethinking your strategies, and giving inclusivity a try? It’s what all the cool governments are doing these days.

The road to redemption demands a bit of soul-searching, a pinch of humility, and a genuine commitment to fixing the mess you’ve made. Before this monster you’ve brewed becomes a Godzilla of societal destruction, how about taking some responsibility?

Oh, but guess what? The New Dawn Government stands at a crossroads. They’ve got a choice: keep nurturing the Frankenstein’s monster they’ve accidentally created or actually do something about it and steer the nation back to the promised land of progress.

And let’s not forget, the responsibility here isn’t just in identifying the monster but in taking the necessary actions to wrangle it before it runs amok. Because, you know, Zambia deserves a little better than this circus.

ZAMBIA YOU DESERVE BETTER

WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN HIS REIGN, ECL WILL NEVER BE AN OPTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF CHILANGA – CHAMPION TEMBO

0

WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN HIS REIGN, ECL WILL NEVER BE AN OPTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF CHILANGA – CHAMPION TEMBO

….We feel his comeback is only aimed at continuing where he stopped from in terms of violence and property grabbing

THE return to politics of the sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Lungu, a man Chilanga district roundly rejected in the district during the 2021 general elections, cannot pass without a comment.

To start with, we want to make it known that his return has invoked a lot of sad memories. We feel Chilanga experienced the worst political machinations and thuggery under his rule. If we look into the rear view mirror, we see ugly scenes that characterized the Chimanja ward by elections where a lady by the name of Linda from Kanyama constituency was badly injured by thugs from PF.

return reminds us of the the ugly scenes of the 2018 parliamentary and mayoral by-elections which they manipulated and left many of our supporters injured. And during the 2021 general elections, Mr. Lungu’s PF literally turned Chilanga into a battle ground were a good number of our people sustained injuries, and even a life was lost. We also vividly remember how PF brutally attacked our women and youths, and ourselves on the nominations day.

Our people in the name of Purity Chizondi, Namoonga Mulukwa, Maclinah Tembo, Timothy Ndalama, Evelyn Tembo, and many others were brutally injured by PF carders who were led by the PF constituency youth chairman known as Goliath. Dockets for the PF thugs were opened but they were never followed up, and to this day, Purity Chizondi still has fears to attend large gatherings due to the beatings she suffered at the hands of the PF thugs. Namoonga Mulukwa still experiences nightmares of being chased by the PF thugs due to the same incidence.

Ourselves when we went to file in our nominations, we were attacked by PF carders who were led by their constituency chairperson, Francis Malauni, at Parklands in the presence of police officers. We had to run away, and seek refuge at Chilanga Police Station, and go back under police escort. When our Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, who was in the opposition then, came to campaign to Chilanga, he didn’t have the freedom to interact with the people of Chilanga.

He was blocked, and the security team had to whiskey him away, even when there was a program which didn’t only just mention that he was coming, but it was a day deserved for the UPND. In areas like Namalombwe, UPND was never given space to campign. The PF did all this thuggery with the financial help from RATSA – Mimosa which trained thugs and rewarded them for their criminal activities.

In terms of governance, our institutions of governance were completely destroyed as they could do things only at the whim of politicians. We had a situation during the voting day of the 2016 general elections in Chilanga were the ECZ set up polling stations at Ndozo Lodge which never existed. How people were going there to cast there ballots only the PF knows. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources could not issue known UPND members with titles in areas like Namalombwe which PF regarded as a no go area for UPND.

So, in as much as it’s his democratic right, bringing back Mr. Lungu is like bringing back our colonial masters, and say no, after we chased the colonial masters, we are now a democracy, and that entails embracing everyone including the colonial masters. Memories of what they did to the people then can never be erased. So even us the people of Chilanga can never forget what we went through during the time when Mr. Lungu was a master.

Our feeling in Chilanga is that ECL’s comeback into politics is aimed at continuing where he stopped from. All he wants to come back for is to entrench the culture of carderism were PF thugs will again begin to undress our women for wearing the cloth they don’t approve. He also wants to come and entrench the culture of grabbing people’s properties among other evils.

In the line of developmental works, the PF regime did nothing in Chilanga. During the time some roads were being constructed in Lusaka under L400, I was a councillor for Chilongolo ward. When we went to lobby for roads at the ministry of works and supply, we were told that the roads were for urban Lusaka, and that Chilanga was rural. Up to now, it still pains us because all the roads that were constructed in Lusaka were actually built using some materials from Chilanga, and yet no roads were built for us.

With that said, we want to let the PF know that Chilanga has changed for the better under the New Dawn administration, and that ECL will never be an option for the people of Chilanga. We say so because our women and youths are now free to put on political clothes of their choice without being harassed, our farmers can now go to Soweto Market without being subjected to some illegal payments for them to trade, no one is grabbing properties from anybody, and CDF empowerment is being given to anyone regardless of political affiliations.

The trend of politics which has been brought by the New Dawn administration where political players are tolerant of each other is what the people of Chilanga aspired for, and they want this atmosphere to continue. The people of Chilanga feel that the New Dawn administration understands that politicians are simply managers of the status of the nation economically, politically and socially, and this includes fairly treating some Zambians who may not be interested in politics.

In conclusion, I want to call upon our law enforcement officers to activate investigations for the people who perpetrated violence during the PF rule. We’ve got known thugs like Goliath, Charles Mwango, and Oga among others whose dockets were opened at Mt. Makulu police post. What we want is that the police officers must resuscitate the investigations and apprehend these known thugs before they can again embark on their murderous path due to their master’s comeback.

I submit!

Haimbe responds to claims of democratic space shrinkage

THE Minister of Justice, Mulambo Haimbe, has dismissed allegations of the country’s democratic space shrinking under the government.

Haimbe asserted during the ZNBC Sunday Interview that the democratic space in Zambia has not diminished and that the claims were without merit.

The backdrop for these remarks comes as a consortium of civil society organizations, alongside some stakeholders, voiced concerns about the state of democratic freedoms in the country.

They argued that public authorities and institutions are failing to uphold the rights to assembly and expression, making comparisons to the previous administration.

But Haimbe said the baseline for determining a democratic space’s shrinkage needed to be established and that, from the government’s perspective, no such shrinkage had occurred.

“You have to have come from a position where you had a lot and then it’s reducing for you to be able to say that the space is shrinking. Now, I’ll ask the question with due respect to the various stakeholders that have spoken. I would ask the question is, what is that lot that we had, which is now becoming less?” Questioned Haimbe.

He emphasized that the government had made significant progress in ensuring that everyone could enjoy their civil and political rights.

The minister pointed to improvements in various aspects of democracy, including freedom of expression, the absence of extrajudicial killings, and the freedom to hold public events and processions.

Haimbe also addressed the issue of amending key laws, including the Public Order Act and Access to Information Bill, which were promised by the government but have faced delays.

He explained that the delays were due to the necessary legislative process and the government’s commitment to avoiding oppressive use of these laws.

“Even though the law itself (public order act) may not be the best law to have on your starting book, but we are doing all we can within a bad situation to avoid weaponising that law the way it was weaponised before.”

On the claim that the government was fixated on comparing itself to the previous administration, Haimbe asserted that such comparisons were being made because the shrinkage narrative implied that the current government was making things worse.

He emphasized that the government was benchmarking itself against internationally accepted standards.

The minister also defended the actions of the police in managing public events, stating that manpower and security considerations were vital.

Haimbe maintained the government’s commitment to upholding civil and political rights and its willingness to engage with stakeholders to address concerns constructively.

“We seem to forget very easily, that the very stakeholders that you have referred to, including our colleagues from the diplomatic corps, have more than the number of times given kudos to this government for being very diligent in ensuring that the democratic space expands.”

Zim-Zambia relations turn sour under Hichilema’s leadership

In a sharp departure from the historical warmth between Zambia and Zimbabwe, relations have become strained under the leadership of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, political commentator Nobleman Runyanga has stated.

Runyanga asserts that the current Zambian administration has neglected the deep-rooted “Siamese twin” bond that once flourished under former Zambian leaders such as Edgar Lungu and Michael Sata.

The United Party for National Development (UPND), led by President Hichilema, has been accused of instigating aggressive social media and press campaigns against Zimbabwe’s leadership, particularly targeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling party, ZANU PF.

Joseph Kalimbwe, a member of the UPND, has been singled out by Runyanga as a chief provocateur, allegedly using his social media influence to cast President Mnangagwa in a negative light, labeling him a “dictator” and a “looter,” while painting the liberation movements as embodiments of authoritarianism.

Runyanga points out that the discord between Zimbabwe and Zambia was seeded pre-election and not only persisted but escalated during and after the election period.

“It was an incessant barrage of insults, unleashed almost hourly, and it seemed calculated to provoke a response,” Runyanga stated.

According to Runyanga, the once-restrained members of ZANU PF felt compelled to retaliate as the attacks grew more personal and unfounded.

Runyanga commented, “This was not the neighborly conduct we’ve seen in the past. The UPND, using figures like Kalimbwe, spoiled the relationship, forgetting the shared history and mutual respect that had long bolstered the ties between our nations.”

Runyanga added that the fallout marks a significant shift in regional dynamics, given the countries’ intertwined liberation history and past collaborations.

As the accusations of authoritarianism from the Zambian side continue, there is a call for introspection and a return to the diplomatic etiquette that has long characterized the inter-state relationship.

Runyanga urges, “There needs to be a concerted effort to rebuild bridges, to foster the spirit of unity that once defined us.”

The decline in relations has not only been a topic of consternation among political analysts but has also caught the attention of regional bodies interested in maintaining stability within the Southern African region.

With these developments, it remains to be seen how both nations will navigate this diplomatic quagmire and if they can return to their former camaraderie, essential for regional cooperation and progress.

Is Reverend Lazarus Chakwera behind current Malawi’s social-economic turmoil?

Somewhere on the planet earth, there is a village known as Maliwa. It is situated on an island.

Every five years, the people of Maliwa have an opportunity to elect their boat driver who take them to and from the land.

Some years ago, they elected their experienced boat driver popularly known as Ibu.

However, some a couple of months later, people of Maliwa changed their mind to opt for an amateur driver colloquially called Kwantere.

One day, people of Maliwa were surprised to find that the boat they were travelling in was sinking putting their lives at stake.

Who is to blame in this scenario? The people of Maliwa for making a wrong choice of an amateur boat driver? Or the experienced boat driver, Ibu, who easily gave up his hard-worn term of office?

Or the amateur inexperienced boat driver who despite putting all his effort the boat kept on sinking?

This scenario is congruent with what is happening in Malawi when in 2020 Malawians made a choice to boot out Prof. Peter Mutharika in favour of Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

The truth of the matter is that life is about making choices. Each choice we make has its own consequences because our mother earth follows natural laws.

For instance, if you jump from the top of a 10-storey building, the law of gravity will force you down to the ground. It will not matter whether you are an atheist, a gnostic, a reverend, poor or rich, you will still need to obey the laws of nature.

Let us accept that Malawians made a formidable choice in 2020 to put Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Chakwera on the driving seat.

What this effectively means is that Malawians entrusted Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera with full responsibility to make decisions on their behalf.

Unfortunately, under the tutelage of President Chakwera, the rosy promises have turned into tribulations, mockery and nightmares.

Currently, inflation is high resulting into prices of goods and services being unaffordable.

Corruption is so rampant that President Chakwera has shown no political will to stamp out corruption by pardoning corruption convict and suspect.

Instead of creating a million jobs, many Malawian employees have been retrenched. In a nutshell, life in Malawi has become unbearable.

The question still lingers, should we blame President Chakwera for socio-economic woes Malawians are currently facing?

In my view, the first blame should go to the voter who is solely empowered to put the right people on the driving seat.

It is very pathetic that the voter has become like the complaining Israelites in the wilderness. They blamed Moses for taking them out of Egypt where they were eating freely.

Three years down the line, why have some Malawians turned into crying babies blaming the current leadership in preference to the former President Peter Mutharika ? Why has Prof. Peter Mutharika become a darling to many Malawians all of a sudden.

We have not forgotten that some Malawians took to the streets to demonstrate against Prof. Peter Mutharika in 2019 citing incompetence, nepotism and high incidents of corruption.

It can therefore be argued that it appears like many Malawians don’t know what they want for their country. They are literally gullible following any direction of the wind. This is purely retrogressive.

In fact, running a government is a serious business, former President Bakili Muluzi once said. It is different from leading a church or any spiritual congregation.

Malawians were lucky because Hon Atupele Muluzi in 2020 forewarned them about President Chakwera being an amateur driver who wouldnot take Malawians to the promised Canaan.

Here we are now with crying babies realising that they have reached Bangladesh instead of Canaan.

However, President Chakwera can be forgiven as he is on the learning curve trying acquainting himself with government procedures and systems.

Imagine that President failed to reshuffle his cabinet within six months as promised.

Instead, it took him over a year just to effect minor changes to the cabinet.

I have heard so many complaints that President Chakwera is falling to run the government. By the way, what is government?

Without much ado, government is composed of the Executive, the Judiciary and the Legislature.

If government is failing, then it implies that at least one arm of the government is at fault.

Much as the Executive arm of government has fallen short of the required performance standard, it can be arguably stated that other arms of government have contributed much to the dismal failure of the Tonse Alliance administration.

Yes, we have seen the Head of state practicing nepotism. He also promoted corruption by pardoning corruption convict, Uladi Mussa and corruption suspect, Bakili Muluzi .

As a leader, President Chakwera is slow at making crucial decisions. An example is that there was a time when it took him a long time to fire corruption suspects such as Newton Kambala and Kezzie Msukwa from his cabinet.

The other arm of government is the legislature which is composed of members of Parliament from political parties.

It is pathetic that the Speaker of the National Assembly became so partisan that she participated in the election of the leader of opposition.

No wonder the office of the leader of opposition is compromised.

One example of such misdemeanor was the expeditious passing of the 2023 National budget within 120 minutes with no proper scrutiny.

In fact, the opposition side in parliament is dismally weak. This has consequently contributed to the total failure of Tonse Alliance administration.

It is widely accepted that a strong opposition party in parliament provides the necessary checks and balances on the other arms of government.

The Judiciary has recently become biased and unfair.
For instance, it is protecting corruption suspects such as Kezzie Msukwa from being investigated and prosecuted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

In conclusion, much as the voter is the first to blame for putting the failed Tonse Alliance into power, the three arms of government also have failed to provide checks and balances on each other.

Chamisa risks losing CCC

A court rejected on Saturday the appeal by 14 opposition lawmakers in Zimbabwe claiming an impostor posing as a party official had them disqualified by parliament.

By-elections are due to take place on December 7 to replace the 14 and one other MP who did not appeal.

As a result, the ruling ZANU-PF party, which won a disputed election in August, could gain the two-thirds majority needed to amend the constitution.

In early October a letter penned by a man named Sengezo Tshabangu, claiming to be interim secretary general of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change party, claimed the 15 lawmakers had ceased to be party members.

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa asked the speaker of parliament to disregard the message littered with grammatical mistakes because Tshabangu was not a CCC member, the party had no secretary general, and had not expelled or recalled any MP.

But the electoral commission received a letter from parliamentary speaker Jacob Mudenda, of ZANU-PF, declaring the seats vacant.

Harare High Court Judge Munamato Mutevedzi said, “The applicants failed to produce their party constitution or any document which showed that Tshabangu could possibly not have held,” the post of party secretary general.

“It was simply their word that he wasn’t.”

CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi said the ruling left “no further doubt about the compromised state of our judiciary”.

“The judiciary had the opportunity … to extricate themselves from the jaws of capture and to prove that they are a credible course to remedy, and that even the opposition can turn to them for recourse. They failed,” he posted on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

Mkwananzi said lawyers were still “studying the judgment to map the way forward”.

The case is likely to worsen political tensions that have been running high in the southern African country since an August 23 vote that international observers said fell short of democratic standards.

Chamisa, 45, lost the presidential race to incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa, 81, of ZANU-PF.

The ruling party, in power since independence in 1980 also secured a majority in parliament but fell a few lawmakers short of the number required to change the constitution.

The CCC says more than a dozen people affiliated with it, including MPs and councillors, have been arrested on spurious charges since the elections.

Lusaka woman loses marriage for blocking sidechick on hubby’s phone

A WOMAN of Lusaka West is the on the verge of losing her 14-year old marriage for simply getting her husband’s phone and blocking his beloved sidechick.

Despite having five children together, Lameck Chirwa, a 39-year old bricklayer says he wants nothing more to do with Dina Namukwanya aged 29, especially that her insulting abilities surpass even those of Nkana Football Club supporters.

Chirwa told the Matero Local Court that him and his wife, have, for some time been at loggerheads and their marriage is more acrimonious than that of the two PF factions of Edgar Lungu and Miles Sampa.

He said while he withstood all the insults she had been showering on him and his mother, he would not forgive her for getting his phone and blocking his girlfriend.

Chirwa complained that his wife had on several occasions told him that he was not the father of the her children because he had malfunctioning manhood.

Further, Chirwa narrated that his wife was also in the habit of going to his mother’s house to insult her and and even went on to advise him to sleep with his mother if at all he was desperate for children.

All this, and since 2007, Chirwa tolerated. It was until his wife, touched his source of happiness that he lost it all and decided to divorce her. She had blocked his potential second wife on his phone.

After finding out, he rushed to report her to her Aunt for her unforgivable act, and before the two could even be sat down or reconciled, he had already summoned her for divorce in the Matero local court.

However, Namukwanya said she loved her husband and did not want the court to divorce them adding that she only blocked his girlfriend because he spent most his time with her.

Namukwanya said her husband sepnt most of his time at his girlfriend’s place but only time he appeared back home recently when he had come to present her the divorce summon.

Namukwanya also admitted to insulting Chirwa and his mother but blamed it on her short temper.

“Yes I insult him and his mother, but that’s only because I am short tempered and I get frustrated at the fact that my husband goes to his girlfriend in presence of work for months, leaving the children and myself hungry, he even went ahead to sell our plot without my knowledge. Just now, he just came back after disappearing for two months. He was talking to a woman on phone at night I got hurt, and I blocked the ladies number,” said Namukwanya.

Testifying in the matter, Namukwanya’s aunt said the couple was mostly happy but things only change whenever Chirwa has a girlfriend which causes her niece to insult.

“Otherwise they are good children, just now my son-in-law only came to report to me that she had blocked his girlfriend on his phone. Before I could even seat them fpen to discuss, he left in anger and the next day, I heard he sued for divorce something I think should not happen,” she said.

Magistrate Harriet Mulenga adjourned the matter to November 10, 2023, for submission, judgment and possible reconciliation.

ZUPED ADVISES MINISTER OF FINANCE…. to quickly resolve the issues surrounding KCM by signing the ‘shareholders agreement’ and the ‘implementation agreement’

ZUPED ADVISES MINISTER OF FINANCE

…. to quickly resolve the issues surrounding KCM by signing the ‘shareholders agreement’ and the ‘implementation agreement’

Lusaka… Monday November 6, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The Zambians for Unity Peace and Development (ZUPED) has challenged the Minister of Finance Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane and line ministers to quickly resolve the issues surrounding Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) by signing the shareholders agreement and the implementation agreement so that documents can be registered in the court of arbitration.

The organization says this will result in Vedanta Resources taking over KCM so that government can be getting the necessary foreign exchange and stabilize the kwacha which has been depreciating.

ZUPED President Ronnie Jere says there is no need to politicize these issues.

Mr Jere says the statement attributed to Dr Musokotwane saying the performance of the dollar would have been worse if PF was still in government was unnecessary.

“The Minister was politicizing the issue of the dollar. But we all know that the foreign exchange problem is as a result of having less exports and importing more. We need to use a lot of forex to import and if we can’t have forex in form or dollar there is no way our kwacha can appreciate,” he said.

“We implore the Minister of Finance to quickly help matters by ensuring that the kwacha is stabilized through unlocking mines such as KCM and Mopani Copper Mines.”

Mr Jere has also wondered why the transition process seems to be moving at a snail speed when the government indicated that this will take three months.

He said there is only one month remaining before the period given by Minister of Mines and Minerals Hon Paul Kabuswe elapses.

“As the coalition, we have been waiting for the Minister’s response to our press briefing which we held last month. We have been requesting the minister of Mines and Minerals Development and his colleagues to expedite the process of signing the shareholders agreement and also the implementation agreement so that those agreements could be registered in the court of arbitration. At the moment we are reliably informed that these agreements have not yet been signed and is a source of worry because we are now in the second month and we only have one month before the three months elapses which the minister of Mines announced before they complete the handover of KCM to Vedanta,” he added.

“We are worried because the people of the Copperbelt, the suppliers and contractors have been eager since the minister announced the takeover of KCM by Vedanta to have what was promised fulfilled. But Vedanta is also saying that they are waiting for the shareholders agreement and the implementation agreement to be signed before they register those documents in the courts of arbitration.”

He hoped that the Minister will be able to expedite this process so that those documents can quickly be registered in the court of arbitration.

“The other thing we want to say is that the Minister of Finance’ statement over the free fall of kwacha; we all know that the kwacha has lost value against the major convertible currencies for example the kwacha is trading at K22. 50 per dollar and the response that the Minister of Finance gave to say the Kwacha should have been worse if the PF was still in power is so misplaced and very irresponsible coming from a man holding the financial purse of the country,” he added.

“What the Minister of Mines should focus on is to make sure that he unlocks all the areas where government can get the necessary foreign exchange to stabilize the kwacha. Government also needs to sort out the sugulite issue in Luapula and make sure that they begin to implement what it has planned in this sector.”

He indicated that the only sure way of safeguarding the interests of the businesses both small and medium enterprises is by making sure that the exchange rate is stabilized hence the need to unlock the mining sector.

He also hoped that the government can reduce the fuel prices as this will make sure that enterprises thrive.

Mundubile Plans To Hire Students To Cause Fake Pressure Ahead Of Planned Failed National Assembly Speaker Impeachment But Students Are Resisting Saying PF Scrapped Off Meal

MUNDUBILE PLANS TO HIRE STUDENTS TO CAUSE FAKE PRESSURE AHEAD OF PLANNED FAILED NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER IMPEACHMENT BUT STUDENTS ARE RESISTING SAYING PF SCRAPPED OFF MEAL
ALLOWANCES AND DON’T MEAN WELL FOR UNZA .

Koswe just arrived at Parliament grounds trying to assesss the situation for the intent to impeach the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Koswe found National Assembly Police having coffee at the gate and complaining of heat . Indeed it is summer time .

After a few sips of abandoned juice near the place of convenience at the gate, Koswe decided to jump into a vehicle which was headed to Mundubile’s home .

There, Koswe found Mundubile making calls to some PF hungry youths, whom he promised to give money so as to book buses to go and protest at the National Assembly grounds to create an impression that the Speaker was unfair .

Meanwhile, the youths also want to secure colossal sums of money then use imingalato against their friends at UNZA .

Through these imingalato , some students will be discouraged from joining this crooked scheme .

Meanwhile, Koswe jumped into Mundubile’s jacked and started listening to a conversation between Mundubile and Emmanuel Mwamba in which Emmanuel Mwamba was suggesting that students from other institutions like Hone and NIPA should have been organized as well.

Koswe later made a call and established that NIPA and Hone College were not easy to arrange .

Meanwhile, Emmnauel Mwamba, suggested that he uses Imingalato on ECL so he produces money stolen from Mukula exports, to sponsor students.

“Bakateka , iyi ni big project. If we execute it well, we can cause more chaos and make this country ungovernable. “Mwamba said .

After a long phone conversation between Emmanuel and Mundubile, Koswe suddenly heard there were youths who were planning to go to see Kambwili to just hear what his benefit is in all this scheme .

Koswe decided to jump into a Yango near the exhaust pipe which was headed to Kambwili’s home. Upon reaching the gate , Koswe notices two small house dogs at the entrance of the door. Realizing these two small dogs were going to cause alarm , Koswe carefully hid his tail and took advantage of the window Kambwili’s maid just delayed to close and jumped into Kabwili’s old Pajama.

Soon some Youths arrived at Kambwili’s home and started telling him to pull out out of the whole Lungu scheme as Lungu could not be trusted .

“Uyu Lungu Nabena Mundubile pamo na Emmanuel Mwamba , bamingalato . Let us just be in the background. There is nothing for us worth fighting for . We shall fight for them and later they will dump us.

Ukwalinsoke , takwafwile muntu ( to be foretold is to be forewarned). “One Chief carder said .

While this was happening, Mundubile was already engaging students and organized a bit of money part of which came from ECL but Mundubile and Emmanuel Mwamba stole part of it claiming it was for fuel .

The idea is for Mundubile to secure buses carrying students to parliament grounds. If that fails , cause a small riot at UNZA .

However, some students are very skeptical on the consequences after this scheme and said , “even if we protest after getting little money , we shall be expelled from the university then ba PF officials will run away . “

Koswe heard one of the students saying , “ they want to give ama K100 then we lose our sponsorship? Ba PF are used to ubufi . They will use us and run away . “

Koswe is assessing the situation and is now by the students Centre having some bottles of castle lite just to hear more of what students are thinking . The general atmosphere is that many students have refused saying “the PF are the ones who scrapped off meal allowances, why would they come back to cheat us ?”

Koswe laughed out and went to see some monks in the Ruins(old residences) , and found some students preparing monk sauce(Kapenta) by International 1-5. Koswe jumped into a jacket of one of the students for fear of being thrown away into a bin together with the residual of secured Monk sauce.

After 5 minutes , Koswe overheard students saying “ba PF nabalubana ( PF are confused ); they are finished and they will never come back . They have no strategy. The problem is that they overrate themselves using criminals from the street . Abena Emmanuel , nabalubana and they have stopped thinking “.

Koswe later withdrew and found a dust bin near the Monk Square just to watch over the situation and to monitor PF carders coming into the campus , including the students they are using.

THEY WERE READY FOR DEALS, NOT TO GOVERN- Fred M’membe

THEY WERE READY FOR DEALS, NOT TO GOVERN

Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND – in – opposition believed that their political pedigree was superior to that of other political parties but their lack of insight and preparation in governing has shown.

Thus, any notion that Mr Hichilema’s corrupt puppet regime will transform the economy, unite the country and guarantee the safety, stability and prosperity of our people is unrealistic and should be dispelled by all.

The misguided, ignorant, arrogant and chaotic nature of this regime speaks volumes about its lack of understanding and capability to govern. They were completely unprepared to govern when they came into power. They’re inexperienced and don’t have any real leadership skills to lead the country.

They have no demonstrable ability and conviction to understand the state of our economy and social political situation, and thereafter, engineer a decent and sustainable economic and political transformation.

It’s plain and simple: Mr Hichilema and his corrupt league, where only ready to come and do deals and not to govern or later on improve the livelihoods of the poor people of this country.

This explains why they have been unable to act in a manner that fosters unity and boosts the prospects of success for the country and its people. To them, the primary purpose of their mission was to amass personal wealth. They’re a morally depraved group who draw satisfaction and pride from the pain, misery and squalor of other human beings.

Their mindset is and has always been set in pursuit of vanity. They’re not leaders but dealers who are determined to deprive the youths and women of this country of their dreams and aspirations.

No wonder, their decisions, planning and willingness to do anything for the country, starts and ends with their indecent aspirations. It’s a self- serving unrepentant bunch of losers that have no respect and regard for the poor masses of our people.

And it’s easy to read through their schemes just by looking at the motivation behind every decision and action this corrupt puppet regime has taken so far. This is a regime that acts to protect the interests of transnational corporations and imperialists at the expense of their own citizens.

And this is shown in the unpatriotic, irresponsible and corrupt way they have been tilting the country’s major policy frameworks and policies towards big capital. Mr Hichilema and his corrupt regime came to transform their own lives and to achieve this, they had to ensure that they tinker with the country’s laws, policies, regulations and procedures .

It’s the same template they’re trying to use in destroying our democracy so that they can remain in power and perpetuate theft and grand corruption.

The violation of our Constitution, abuse of the judiciary, parliament, the police and other governance institutions reinforces our belief that Mr Hichilema is fomenting the trouble and potential violence in the PF using the state to control and undermine institutions of justice and democracy in the country.

But we shouldn’t allow Mr Hichilema to undermine institutions that we have built as a country over decades of struggle and hardship.

With all this evidence, it is quickly becoming clear that we have a very serious governance and leadership problem, and we need to address this urgently and in a more determined and assertive manner.

As citizens, we have a legitimate responsibility to protect our country against Mr Hichilema’s dangerous and destructive path that threatens our very existence as a united, independent and democratic nation.

Let us all rise up and fight for our country, enough is enough!

MASS ACTION AND NATIONAL SHUTDOWN…processions, protests, demonstrations are legal in this country- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

MASS ACTION AND NATIONAL SHUTDOWN

…processions, protests, demonstrations are legal in this country…

Lusaka-Sunday, 5th November 2023

We have noted statements from State House and from the Zambia Police responding to our call for mass actions and promoting a day of national shut-down in order for Zambians to protect the Constitution, Democracy and the Rule of Law.

It must be stated that the conduct of both mass actions and proposed day of national shut-down are legally sound and are practices within the democratic space of our country.

These calls also form part of freedom of expression and association practices to raise awareness and attention to a particular national matter(s).

Processions, protests and demonstrations are all legal and provided for in the laws of Zambia.

WHY MASS ACTION AND A DAY OF NATIONAL SHUTDOWN

We have over the last two years, noted a deep erosion of our democracy and total disregard for the rule of law in our country by the Executive.

These violations span from wide-ranging issues such as abuse of public tender processes to the police actions that involves torturing, killing and meting out inhuman treatment to citizens and those perceived to be political opponents of those in power.

Of serious concerns are the recent state actions against the Patriotic Front.

There is concerted effort to decimate the Opposition party from the political scene and remove its leadership.

Besides the numerous arrests against its leaders, the seizure of the party’s vehicles and assets, recent actions and utterances have exposed President Hakainde Hichilema as one at the centre of this plot and is determined to abuse state institutions and public resources to destroy Zambia’s largest Opposition party.

KABUSHI AND KWACHA BY-ELECTIONS

The conduct of State House to unfairly abuse the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Zambia Police, with the sole purpose to exclude Patriotic Front candidates from participating in the Kwacha and Kabushi by-elections held in October 2022 were orchestrated by the State.

Later the Constitution Court on 10th March 2023( in the case 2022/CCZ/0018), ruled that the actions of the state and ECZ to defrenchise Hon. Joe Malanji and Hon. Bowman Lusambo were unlawful as the duo was eligible to participate and contest in those by-elections election.

Sadly despite this ruling bybthe Constitutional Court, both Hon. Malanji and Hon. Lusambo remain outside Parliament and the seats have subsequently gone to the UPND.

RECENT ACTIONS AGAINST THE PATRIOTIC FRONT

Recently, there have been concerted attempts to deregister the Patriotic Front despite the party fulfilling and meeting all lawful and procedural obligations.

Warning letters were issued by the Registrar of Societies giving notice of the intention to deregister the party.

On 9th May 2023, a gazette notice no 592 was issued illegally giving powers to the Chief Registrar of Societies. With this gazette notice, The Chief Regsitrar proceeded to give a 60-day ultimatum for political parties to hold internal elections and fill vacancies.

The Statutory Instrument was clearly designed and aimed at the Patriotic Front party.

STATE PREPARES AND FACILITATES MILES SAMPA’S ILLEGAL EXTRA-ORDINARY CONFERENCE

It must be made very clear that the attempt to steal, kill and destroy the Patriotic Front has been mooted and implemented by President Hakainde Hichilema and his officials at State House and Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security.

Below are some reasons making our claims credible;

  1. Despite several reports spanning several days from the Patriotic Front to the Zambia Police, informing and demanding action from them, that a known person, a Mr. Morgan Ngona, who was NOT a member of the Patriotic Front was planning and attempting to hold and host an illegal Conference to be held at Mulungushi University and later moved to Mulungushi International Conference Center, the Police refused to act and prevent an illegal and criminal action.

We informed the Police that this was being done in cohoots, with a suspended official, Matero Member of Parliament, Hon. Miles Sampa, but the Police blatantly ignored the reports as demonstrated by a public statement from the Inspector General of Police who said that he had no intention of arresting Mr. Miles Sampa or those perpetrating the illegality.

  1. Instead the State provided a heavy police presence which moved in to protect and ensure that such an illegal meeting actually took place.
  2. The action by the Police led by Deputy Inspector General, Milner Muyambago to clear fingerprints and security checks on 24th October 2023, the day of the so-called Conference and to facilitate the submission of a Notice of Change of Office Bearers to the Registrar of Societies, exposed the plot and the involvement of the State at such a high level.
  3. The subsequent actions and occurrences witnessed at Parliament and the Judiciary, that exposes deep interference from State House.
  4. The pressure exerted on the Registrar of Societies to attempt to change Office Bearers despite the Conference held by Miles Sampa being clearly illegal and failed to meet any of the procedures and provisions of the Patriotic Front Party Constitution.
  5. Affording Mr. Miles Sampa state security, sometimes bigger than the security detail of the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia.
  6. The abuse of the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), a public broadcaster, from the day when the illegal Conference was held to date, where a narrative is being pushed that Miles Sampa held a legitimate and lawful process that resulted in him being elected as so-called PF party president.

ZNBC has also been abused to a great extent, to plant a false narrative that activities in the Patriotic Front were an internal matter of conflict and were NOT as a result of a now known and established agenda that this is state orchestrated, state sponsored and state-driven process to impose a UPND stooge or sympathizer, as leader of the Patriotic Front.

  1. Despite the Patriotic Front not making any changes to the party leadership in Parliament as provided for under Article 74(2) which elects leader of the Opposition in Parliament, the Speaker of the National Asembly Nellie as proceeded to effect changes on the request of Miles Sampa. It must be noted that the Party has sued Mr. Sampa for holding an illegal Conference and holding himself out as Patriotic Front Party President and this matter has not been resolved or determined.

This matter remain in yhe Lusaka high court.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA MUST BE CALLED OUT FOR ABUSE OF THE CONSTITUTION

Therefore the abuse of state institutions and flagrant disregard for the Rule of Law and the damage done to democratic institutions and wings of Government, as exposed during this process, requires that we engage in civic, civil and political actions to rescue and restore our democracy.

We are calling upon NGOs, the Church, Labour movement, sister political parties to join us in bringing political pressure to bear onto the government of President Hichilema so that he is encouraged to respect the Republican Constitution and democratic norms.
What has happened is not a PF affair but an attack and affront on our democracy.

It must be stated that the protest actions will remain peaceful and within the confines and sanctity of the law and order.

The attempt by President Hichilema to steal, kill and destroy the Patriotic Front is a betrayal and an affront to the multi-party democracy status of our country.

MAKE NO MISTAKE – A STRONG AND UNITED PF IS A MUST FOR ZAMBIA- Kellys Kaunda

MAKE NO MISTAKE – A STRONG AND UNITED PF IS A MUST FOR ZAMBIA

There is no doubt in my mind that a strong and united Patriotic Front (PF) is good for Zambia, Zambians, and Zambia’s democracy. Just look at the checks and balances the party continues to provide both in parliament and outside. Arrested by the police and charged with all kinds of funny and spurious charges or kicked out of parliament by the Speaker for laughable reasons, they have continued fearlessly to serve this country, its people, and its democracy.

The party has found a way to work with other opposition parties thus increasing pressure on the ruling UPND. Just look at and listen to the way they blend their opposition voices and the solidarity they give one another in the face of what is clearly state persecution! You’ ve got to love these brothers and sisters and thank them for their courage. It’s not easy being an opposition politician in this country.

However, this scenario is not new in Zambia: this has been the political terrain in the country since the Kaunda days. The ruling party, abusing its powers and those of the state, has always turned the heat on the opposition suffocating it. UNIP suffocated Kapwepwe until his death. MMD suffocated UNIP until it was decapitated never rising again. PF launched an onslaught against MMD and exploited its internal wrangles until it was too weak to mount any meaningful challenge. It also mounted vicious and relentless attacks against the main opposition UPND, no words can be found to adequately capture what, looking back, may only be described as madness!

I mean how else can one explain forcing an opposition leader to escape from a media house through the rooftop or smoking him out of his house by the state police in the same way that the Mexican police or the Colombian security forces would do in search of some of the world’s notorious drug lords in the name of El Chapo and Pablo Escobar, respectively! And yet, in our case, it was just an ordinary citizen participating in a democratic process!

History is repeating itself: the same strategy and tactics that have been employed before have been deployed in the political arena as PF faces an arsenal of political weaponry that it employed against the opposition when it was in power. While the onslaught may not be exact in every detail, the strategy and the players are the same: exploit internal wrangles, decapitate the opposition by using institutions of the state, the same institutions that are supposed to uphold democracy.

In all these instances, the west has not necessarily served the day: some of them have exploited the situation for their own foreign policy interests. Instead, it is the Zambian people that have rescued their own political institutions and their democracy. Believe you me, they will rescue it once again! One would only hope and trust that PF will find the courage to remain resilient, and work with other opposition parties to defend Zambia’s democracy.

In the pursuit of this national cause, please, never draw in any foreign entities, especially the west, you will be giving them an excuse to impose values on this country that you will begin to frantically fend off when they demand that you pay back for the favors you owe them. You don’t want to be in debt with these brothers – believe you me.

PF dismisses speaker Impeachment Motion, brands it B.I.D

LEADER of the Opposition in Parliament Robert Chabinga has said described the impeachment motion against Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti as a Brought-In-Dead (BID) case that will not succeed.

Chabinga said his office had not sanctioned the motion.

“From the very beginning, my office, as the Leader of the Opposition, has not authorized any Member of Parliament to support this impeachment,” Chabinga said in a statement to the media.

Describing the motion as a B.I.D, Chabinga said it would have no significant impact and would not pass.

Chabinga added, “It is a BID, it will have no ripple effect at all and it will never go through.”

Chabinga also cautioned Nkana Constituency independent member of parliament Binwell Mpundu who initiated the impeachment motion, to be cautious about potentially being manipulated by the Edgar Lungu-led PF faction.

“I trust my brother, Binwell. He is an intelligent man, but he has shocked me in the way he tried to be used by people who are greedy, selfish, and do not have the best interests of this country at heart,” Chabinga noted.

Chabinga further delivered a warning to the Members of Parliament who supported the motion without due consideration, stating, “I just wanted to make a clear statement that those members of parliament who were signing blindly (the motion of impeachment). I hope you know what you are doing because you will be on your own. Those people will run away from you.”

He pointed out the stark contrast between the newcomers and those with vested interests, saying, “They ate, they had the money, they dined, and that is why they want to protect their interests. You, who just came in, will remain a laughing stock and you will never come back. So be very careful,” Chabinga urged.

However, Chabinga revealed that some Members of Parliament were resorting to intimidation tactics to rally support for the motion. “Most Members of Parliament have called me, but I cannot mention names for fear of them being victimized because they have been told they would be beaten, attacked, and lose their seats. This is how desperate this team is,” Chabinga disclosed.

Meanwhile, Chabinga expressed his surprise at Members of Parliament seeking assistance from the same embassies they had previously criticized as imperialist. He urged them to follow proper legal procedures and approach the court while handling these matters with sobriety.

ZAMBIA SUGAR RECORDS OVER K1BN PROFIT

By Brian Hantuba

DESPITE a relatively harsh economic environment, ZAMBIA Sugar PLC has recorded a profit of K1.248 billion for the financial year ending 31st August, 2023 following a 28% increase in exports.

The Sugar giant collected K5.8 billion in revenue largely driven by a 12% improvement in the weighted average selling price for domestic and export sales.

Meanwhile, Zambia Sugar Secretary, Harriet Katongo, says the company paid an outstanding long-term debt of K42 million and that the institution’s Directors have since recommended a once-off special dividend of 158 ngwee per share.

This follows three years of earnings above K1 billion and the repayment of all long-term debt.

She says the Board has also recommended a dividend payout of 349 ngwee per share to be considered for approval by shareholders at the Annual General Meeting scheduled for 28th November, 2023.

Katongo notes that sales to the export market increased due to strong regional demand, good logistics management and availability of stocks following a slowdown in domestic demand.

She reveals that domestic sales volume were negatively impacted by the influx of illegal imports and low disposable income for rural households as compared to the previous year.

The Company Secretary says the firm responded by implementing promotions and intense advertising campaigns and managed to recover some of the lost market share.

With this positive outlook, Zambia Sugar Country Managing Director, Oswald Magwenzi, says the company is poised to focus on creating mutually beneficial partnerships such as promoting and enhancing the out-grower programme.

Other partnerships will include local supplier development as well as continued investment in its corporate social responsibility projects like rehabilitation of roads, the drainage system and upgrading of some selected schools and clinics.

Magwenzi states that in the just ended financial year, Zambia Sugar embarked on various projects like the rehabilitation of Ndeke clinic – which is the biggest in Mazabuka, sponsorship of sports initiatives and upgrading of some public roads on the Estate to bituminous standard.

Nigerian MPs reject plan to buy US$5m presidential yacht amid online outrage

Nigeria’s lower chamber of parliament has rejected the government’s plan to buy a presidential yacht for $6m (£5m), a senior lawmaker has said.

Nigerians had criticised the plan as a waste of money on luxuries during an economic crisis.

Lawmakers instead moved the $6m to the student loan budget, doubling its allocation, Abubakar Bichi said.

President Bola Tinubu took office in May with a promise to cut waste, and ease people’s financial hardship.

But he triggered an outcry after he tabled a supplementary budget in the National Assembly for approval, with the planned purchase of the yacht listed under the Nigerian Navy’s proposed capital expenditure of $53m.

Human rights activist and former lawmaker Shehu Sani reacted by saying that “the poor can’t be struggling for survival in a canoe while their leader is yachting”.

Mr Tinubu’s spokesman Temitope Ajayi distanced the president from plans to buy the yacht.

“From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget is from the navy and they must have operational reasons for why it is required,” he said.

The budget was approved by the House of Representatives on Thursday.

But Mr Bichi, chairman of the influential House Committee on Appropriation and a member of Mr Tinubu’s ruling party, told local journalists that lawmakers had declined to approve the allocation for a presidential yacht.

The budget also earmarks $36m for State House expenditure, including the purchase of luxury vehicles and the construction of a presidential office complex.

The government is also planning to spend $15m (£13m) on the presidential air fleet.

The controversy comes at a time when Mr Tinubu is under intense pressure over the cost-of-living crisis, and a massive fall in the value of Nigeria’s currency, the naira, against the dollar.

Nigeria’s annual inflation rose to 26.7% in September, according to official statistics.

A leading advocacy group in Nigeria, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (Serap), said the purchase of a yacht could not be justified when “137 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty”.

It added that their plight worsened after Mr Tinubu scrapped a fuel subsidy in his inaugural speech as president, causing the price of fuel and other basic commodities to rise.

Activist Omoyele Sowore accused the government of spending on luxuries while it “maintains the miseries of the Nigerian populace”.

Mr Ajayi said the president and his vice-president were not planning to add new vehicles to their fleet, and were using “inherited vehicles” from the previous administration.

He said the budget for vehicles was for hundreds of civil servants and political aides working at State House.

Fally Ipupa urges DR Congo diaspora not to protest his gigs

Fally Ipupa is one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s biggest stars.

His song Un Coup, featuring Congolese-French singer Dadju, for example, has been viewed more than 80 million times on YouTube, and his live performances attract thousands of fans.

So many people were desperate to see him perform in DR Congo’s capital last year that Kinshasa’s Stadium of Martyrs was overfull and there was a crush at the end.

Initial reports from the government said that 11 people lost their lives. According to Ipupa and the BBC’s Kinshasa reporter, this figure was never conclusively confirmed.

This is not the only one of Ipupa’s concerts that ended up in the news. When he performed in France in 2020, there were riots outside the venue in Paris with protesters setting fire to bins and motorbikes.

It was all linked to politics. For the last decade, members of the diaspora have tried to stop Congolese musicians from performing in Europe, to show their opposition to politicians back home.

They have accused big stars of being too close to power and of failing to speak out against abuses happening in DR Congo.

So it is a big moment for Fally Ipupa that for the first time in his career, he is finally due to perform in London. His concert will be in December when elections are scheduled to be held back home.

The 45-year-old singer and his management tell me that an agreement has now been reached with skeptical Congolese communities and he is set to perform again in Paris and Brussels.

“Most of the people know now that I don’t do political things, I am just a musician and they have realized that you cannot punish your child all his life,” he said.

Ipupa does have some sympathy for those who boycotted his concerts but he feels it is time to move past politics and support DR Congo’s music industry.

“I agree that things were happening politically that were not correct in DR Congo, and I’ve always told them that I agree with certain of the protesters who wanted to get the message across and raise awareness in people.

“But now the time has come to say look guys, we have punished the artists, we have slowed down Congolese culture, it’s time to show the world that we have very, very strong music.”

He feels that Congolese music has suffered, losing its place in Europe to music from Nigeria, Ghana, and Jamaica. Nigerian Afrobeats artists are now filling the major venues that Congolese artists used to fill 10 years ago. But he is confident that this can change.

“Congolese music is one of the most beautiful and rich, we have many talented artists, so if our brothers and sisters in Europe say no more blocking of Congolese music in Europe trust me we’re going to take our place in the world,” he said.

Guinea ex-coup leader ‘kidnapped’ from jail returned

0

Guinea’s former military ruler, Moussa Dadis Camara, is back in jail after being taken from prison by armed men, according to his lawyer.

The group stormed a jail in the capital, Conakry, early on Saturday morning – taking Capt Camara and three others.

Those taken are currently on trial for their alleged roles in deaths of more than 150 people in a 2009 protest.

Besides Capt Camara, two other prisoners have also been found.

It is unclear if they were kidnapped or freed by their supporters.

Capt Camara’s lawyer earlier told the BBC the former leader was taken against his will and that he would never try to escape prison, as he had confidence in the Guinean judicial system.

The country’s borders were closed as the authorities hunted for him and the others that were taken.

Guinea’s Justice Minister, Charles Alphonse Wright, announced the escape on local radio.

“We will find them. And those responsible will be held accountable,” he said.

Gunshots were heard in Conakry, starting before dawn. The city centre was cordoned off and military vehicles were also seen on the streets.

Among the others reported to have escaped were Col Claude Pivi, a former government minister who is accused of also being involved in the murder of people at Conakry stadium on 28 September 2009.

At least 157 people died when troops attacked people protesting against military rule. Scores of women were raped.

Col Pivi, Capt Camara and nine other former officials who have been charged over the massacre have all denied the allegations against them.

Capt Camara is charged with having command responsibility over the soldiers who carried out the alleged crimes.

He seized power in 2008 when long-time President Lansana Conté died, but he was ousted and fled the country not long after the Conakry killings and following an assassination attempt.

The 59-year-old had been living in Burkina Faso before returning to Guinea in September 2022 to face justice.

Guinea is currently under military rule, one of several former French colonies in West and Central Africa that have staged coups in the past three years.

The most recent happened in 2021, when former French soldier Col Mamady Doumbouya led a rebellion against President Alpha Condé. Col Doumbouya was later sworn in as president.

Israel rejects US Secretary of State’s request for a pause in Gaza

0

Israel has rejected the request from the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to temporarily stop the conflict in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.

Mr Blinken talked about the idea with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials when they met in Tel Aviv.

But in a TV statement a few minutes later, Mr. Netanyahu said that Israel refuses to accept a short-term pause in fighting that doesn’t include the freedom of our captured people.

He said that Israel was using all their strength to fight against Hamas.

The US government tried to help with diplomacy while Israeli military leaders said they surrounded Gaza City and were fighting in a complicated urban environment.
Video explanation, The text needs to be rewritten in simpler words.

Amani left her family in Gaza to go to school in the UK right before the war started. Now she is very worried as she keeps a close eye on something.

Israel started attacking after Hamas fighters killed 1,400 people in Israel and took more than 240 hostages. They used air force and ground forces in their attack.

Israel has attacked and caused the deaths of at least 9,200 people in Gaza, as reported by the health ministry run by Hamas.

During his trip to Tel Aviv, Mr Blinken expressed that the US will keep supporting Israel. He also asked Israel to take definite actions to ensure the safety of Palestinian civilians.

Mr Blinken said that today we discussed some important questions. These questions were about how to use a break in fighting to help more people in need, how to link the break to the freeing of hostages, and how to make sure that Hamas doesn’t take advantage of these breaks or agreements.

He observed that over 100 trucks with aid arrived in Gaza within the last day, even though they were not allowed before. However, he mentioned that this amount was still insufficient.

Mr Blinken visited the region for the second time in a month and mentioned that the US has been guiding Israel on reducing civilian casualties while also dealing with Hamas. And he said that they talked about practical steps to send more help, like fuel, to reach Gaza.

However, Mr Netanyahu strongly stated that he would not permit any fuel to enter the Gaza Strip. He has also refused any discussion about stopping the fighting.

The Israeli Prime Minister said that Israel will not agree to a temporary pause in fighting unless our hostages are released.

The US secretary of state said that Israel can only become more secure by forming a Palestinian state.

He said that the US has always believed in having two separate states for two different groups of people. Once again, this is the only way to guarantee long-term safety for Israel as a Jewish and democratic country.

During a press conference with the Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Mr. Blinken said that Israel has the responsibility to protect itself and make sure that the events of 7 October don’t occur again.

Mr Herzog mentioned that Israel is making big efforts to let people in Gaza know about airstrikes. He showed a pamphlet that is being dropped there, advising civilians to leave the northern area affected by the war.

While the two men were talking, some people outside were shouting through a loudspeaker on a street nearby. These people were the families of Israelis who had been kidnapped.
Media caption means providing a brief description or explanation that accompanies a media file, such as a video or image.

Mr Herzog expressed sympathy for them, while Mr. Blinken mentioned that the US is constantly thinking about our hostages.

“We have a lot of people, including Israelis, Americans, and others, and we are committed to doing everything possible to bring them back safely to reunite with their families and loved ones,” he said.

White House officials talked to reporters on a conference call and said that Hamas was not allowing people from other countries to leave Gaza.

One of the officials said that it would take a long break in the Israeli offensive to have any chance of freeing the hostages.

Showing the political pressure that Mr. Biden is experiencing from the left-wing of his party, one Democratic representative criticized him harshly on Friday.

Rashida Tlaib, a congresswoman from Michigan, accused the president of not doing enough to stop the killing of Palestinian people and called it genocide. She is the only US lawmaker who has Palestinian heritage.

She said, “If you don’t support a ceasefire now, don’t expect us to support you in the 2024 election. ”

The person in charge of the United States’ foreign affairs is currently in Jordan. Jordan recently called back its ambassador from Israel.

This Saturday, the highest-ranking American diplomat will have a meeting with Arab leaders. These leaders have been speaking out more and more against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Fifteen UN employees suffered injuries after explosives in Mali struck cars

0

Fifteen peacekeepers from the United Nations were injured while leaving a rebel area in northern Mali. Their vehicles were hit by explosives.

The United Nations reported that there were two separate instances this week where convoys were attacked by homemade bombs known as improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

On Wednesday, eight peacekeepers got hurt and were taken away by air. They are now doing fine, according to the UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

On Friday, seven peacekeepers were injured and taken away by plane for treatment. The speaker didn’t give any information about their health.

Mr Dujarric said that on Tuesday, two explosive devices were used to attack the convoy as it was leaving the UN base in Kidal. At least two peacekeepers were hurt in these attacks.

The extremist group called JNIM, which is connected to al-Qaida, said that they were the ones who caused the explosions on Tuesday.

The peacekeepers were supposed to leave the rebel’s territory in a few weeks, but they left earlier because the situation became more tense in that area.
Mr Dujarric said the United Nations is unsure if the explosive devices that hit the group of vehicles had been there for a while or if the peacekeepers were purposefully singled out.

But he said the group of vehicles is going to Gao, which is on the east side of the Niger River. It should be easy for most people to understand the path they are using to reach there.

The group of vehicles is going to reach the city by the end of the weekend and from there, the peacekeepers can leave the country by plane.

In 2021, Mali’s military leaders, who took power by force and removed the elected president, told the United Nations peacekeeping force, which had been trying to stop a group of extremists, to go away. The UN force consisted of about 15,000 soldiers and had been in Mali for ten years.

The UN Security Council began the process of leaving Mali, and they wanted everyone to be out by December 31.

The UN has been trying to keep peace in Mali since 2013. This mission, called MINUSMA, is very dangerous and has resulted in the deaths of 300 people.
There were about 850 UN peacekeepers in Kidal, along with 150 other mission staff.

A worker from the United Nations (UN) said to the Associated Press that peacekeepers left the base in groups of vehicles because the leaders of Mali’s junta did not give permission for flights to bring back UN staff and equipment.

The military leaders agreed to let the medical evacuation flights happen, according to Mr Dujarric. However, he also mentioned that they are not allowing as many flights as they should to keep our peacekeepers on the ground safe.

After the group of vehicles left Kidal, the town was seized by ethnic Tuareg rebels. These rebels have been fighting against Mali’s military.

Experts say that the violence is a result of the breakdown of a peace agreement made in 2015 between the government and the rebels.

The deal was made after Tuareg rebels forced security forces out of northern Mali in 2012 because they wanted their own separate country.

Ukraine war affected by Israel-Hamas conflict – Zelensky

0

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has acknowledged that the Israel-Hamas conflict is diverting attention from the war in Ukraine.

He said that Russia’s goal was to invade Ukraine, and they did so in February 2022.

He said that the fighting in Ukraine isn’t stuck, even though the country’s top military leader recently said that it is.

Ukraine’s attempt to fight back in the south hasn’t been very successful yet.

This has made Kyiv’s Western allies worried that they might get tired of supporting Ukraine in war. Some countries are starting to hesitate in giving Ukraine advanced weapons and money.

Why the gain of Kyiv’s east bank could be important
The conflict in Ukraine is getting worse as Russia is strengthening their defenses and making it harder for opponents to break through.

During a briefing in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Zelensky explained that the war in the Middle East is diverting attention from Ukraine. He made this statement while talking to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

He said Russia wanted this attention to be reduced, but emphasized that we have the ability to control everything.

MrZelensky was also questioned about what Ukraine’s top military commander, Valery Zaluzhny, said this week about the war entering a “positional” or static phase. Zaluzhny believes that this phase would be advantageous to Moscow because it would give them an opportunity to strengthen their military forces again.

“Everyone is getting tired and there are different opinions,” Mr Zelensky said. He also mentioned that this situation is not a stalemate.

He said that Russia has control of the skies and Ukraine urgently needs F-16 warplanes and advanced anti-aircraft defenses from the US to improve the situation.

The Ukrainian leader said that last year there was a lot of talk about a situation where no progress was being made on the large battlefield in Ukraine. However, he mentioned that Kyiv was able to achieve significant military victories in the northeastern Kharkiv region and the southern Kherson region afterwards.

Mr Zelensky said that the reports in the media about him feeling more pressure to talk with Russia are not true.

Today, none of our partners in the EU, US, and other countries are forcing us to have talks with Russia and give them something in return. This won’t happen.

Moscow responded to Mr. Zaluzhny’s statement on Thursday. The spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the current situation on the battlefield is not a “stalemate”.

“According to Dmitry Peskov, all the objectives of the war need to be accomplished. He also mentioned that Ukraine should understand that discussing the possibility of the Kyiv government winning the war is unreasonable. ”

President Putin has said many times that Ukraine’s counter-attack has not been successful, and his Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu recently stated that Kyiv is losing the war even though they are receiving new weapons from Nato allies.

The UK defense intelligence recently reported that Russia may have lost about 200 tanks and other armored vehicles while attacking Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine.

It is possible that Russia has had many soldiers hurt or killed in the town since October 2023.

The report stated that Russia’s leaders are still willing to accept many people getting hurt or killed in order to gain small amounts of land.

Moscow has been attempting to make progress in eastern and north-eastern Ukraine recently, but Ukraine’s military says they have successfully defended against all the attacks.

The statements made by both sides have not been checked to confirm if they are true or not.

Speaker Nelly Mutti Must Herself 100% Comply With Standing Orders 2016 Before Expecting Mps To Comply- Peter Sinkamba

By Sinkamba Peter

SPEAKER NELLY MUTTI MUST HERSELF 100% COMPLY WITH STANDING ORDERS 2016 BEFORE EXPECTING MPs TO COMPLY

The other day I watched Speaker Nelly Mutti announcing to the House that the seating arrangements had been changed and was expecting every MP to seat in their respective seats according to the new order. I then saw a circulated schematic diagram that showed Leader of Opposition Hon Mundubile was relegated to the tail end of the seating order.

The same day, I checked on the National Assembly Website and noted a change which showed that Hon Robert Chabinga is now the new Leader of Opposition.

This morning, as I watched Parliament TV, I saw the Speaker invite Hon Chabinga, as Leader of Opposition, to address Parliament via Zoom.

Now, perusal of Standing Order 9(1) of Standing Orders 2016 (Repealed), as shown in the picture attached hereto, provides that the opposition party with the largest number of seats in the Assembly shall ELECT A LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION FROM AMONGST THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WHO ARE FROM THE OPPOSITION.

Further, Standing Order 9(2) provides that as soon as the Leader of Opposition is elected under paragraph 1, the Speaker shall inform the House.

Furthermore, Standing Order 9(3) provides that the Leader of Opposition SHALL be elected WITHIN SEVEN DAYS of the Speaker’s election at a TIME and venue to be communicated to the MPs by the Speaker.

Clearly, the Standing Order 9(1) provides that only MPs from the opposition political party with the largest number of seats , and no other party or person or persons have, a right to elect a Leader of Opposition.

Standing Order 9(2) is also explicitly that such election must only happen within seven days of election of the Speaker, and no other time.

Standing Order 9(3) is also very clear that an election of a Leader of Opposition must only take place at a time and venue communicated to MPs by the Speaker. Not at any other time and venue.

Perusal of Standing Order 43 (1) of Standing Orders 2021 provides that the opposition party with the largest number of MP shall elect from among its MPs the Leader of Opposition.

Clearly, neither the 2016 Standing Orders nor the 2021 Standing Orders do provide for the removal of Leader of Opposition after election. That being the case any purported election that takes place thereafter, is a breach of the Standing Orders, and thereby invalid.

Further, from the confusion ongoing, it appears to me that all the 50+ PF MPs were not involved in the purported election of Hon Chawinga. If any other MPs, who are not members of the opposition, were involved in the election of Hon Chawinga, then such election contravenes the Standing Orders, and thereby invalid.

Additionally, it appears to me that Speaker never communicated to opposition MPs of the venue and time where the election of Hon Chabinga was to take place, if at all such election happened. Failure by the Soeaker to communicate to opposition MPs the venue and time for election of Leader of Opposition renders outcome of such election invalid.

From the above observations, it is clear in my mind that the Speaker contravened Standing Order 43 in replacing Hon Mundibile with Hon Chabinga.

This behaviour is utterly disgusting because when a Speaker blatantly breach Standing Orders, that Speaker lacks moral right to enforce the, Standing Orders on the MPs.

In this regard, I invite the, Speaker to reflect on her deeds in this regard; read Standing, Order 43 and do the right thing!
