ZAMBIANS ARE ANGRY WITH UPND – FRANK NG’AMBI

ZAMBIANS ARE ANGRY WITH UPND – FRANK NG’AMBI

POVERTY levels have risen in the country and there is growing disenchantment among citizens and the UPND government and President Hakainde Hichilema should be ready to exit because Zambians are ready for another change of government, the Patriotic Front has said.

Frank Ng’mbi, the PF’s chairman for industry says the UPND and President Hichilema should not worry about losing power in 2026 as Zambians have already resolved to vote the ruling party out of government.

Dr Ng’ambi claimed that the UPND administration has not only exhibited second-rate leadership, but has also been divisive, with the policies which were not in the interest of the people with worsened poverty and hunger levels in various communities.

Dr Ng’ambi Ng’ambi said, instead of fearing losing power in 2026, President Hichilema should feel proud that Zambians gave him the opportunity to lead as republican President, but should also appreciate the fact that many were disappointed because the head of State had performed dismally in delivering his promises.

He said in an I nterview in Kitwe that President Hichilema should focus on resolving economic challenges facing the country and work at reducing tension that has gripped the country as a result of the threats against former President Edgar Lungu.

Dr Ng’ambi said President Hichilema should not worry about how strong and popular the PF was becoming but should be concerned about his inability to meet the expectations of the many Zambians who voted for the UPND.

He stated that what should preoccupy President Hichilema should be the shortage of essential medicines and other medical supplies in the country’s health facilities and not insulting former President Lungu for going to church.

Dr Ng’ambi said what President Hichilema should know that it was not Kutumpa (being stupid) for former President Lungu to go to church and that the former head of State was not under house arrest for President Hichilema to restrict his public appearances.

“President Hichilema should not be emotional and worry about losing power in 2026. President Hichilema should not be the one to decide who should challenge by decreeing that he will never allow former President Lungu to return to power. Let President Hichilema not worry about losing power in 2026 because Zambians have already resolved to vote him out and bring back the PF because Zambians have realized it was a caring government.”

“Emotional outbursts and threats against former President Lungu and other PF leaders will not reduce the cost of living. President Hichilema has failed to live to his campaign promises of reducing mealie meal to K50 per 25 kilogramme bag, reducing fertiliser from K650 to K250 per 50kilogramme bag.

The bag of mealie meal is now almost K200, while that of fertiliser is more than K1, 000. He should not vent his frustration or anger on ECL. No,’’ Dr Ng’ambi said

Dr Ng’ambi said President Hichilema should concentrate on finding solutions to the problems and challenges the country was facing as opposed to making frequent international trips at the cost of Zambians.

He said the people of the Copperbelt were expecting President Hichilema to make definitive pronouncements when he was on the Copperbelt for seven days but that it was disappointing that the head of State had not made any decision on the two giant mining companies in Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM).

I don’t mind a new party taking over from UPND but not PF, says Kazabu

I don’t mind a new party taking over from UPND but not PF, says Kazabu

By Edwin Mbulo in Livingstone

STOP paying Edgar Lungu his entitlements because he has not retired from politics, Luxon Kazabu urges the UPND government.

“I personally don’t mind a new party taking over from the UPND some day, but certainly not PF,” he says. “I shudder. That would be a catastrophy because they have shown their true colours. The brutality they did to us is unmeasurable. It sends shivers to think that one day they can bounce back. Then we will start looking for where to go to.”

Kazabu, who served as deputy livestock and fisheries minister in Michael Sata’s PF administration, said he does not blame President Hakainde Hichilema for his strong “kutumpa” words on the Copperbelt.

“I personally do not blame HH. He is only human. He has tried to restrain himself but being human, there comes a time when he feels it and I don’t blame him,” he told The Mast. “Edgar Lungu is making comments that border in politics. Has he retired or not? Why should we pay him if he is still in the political areana like some of us. He doesn’t deserve to be paid. He is retired, he needs to behave like a statesman. He is frowning on the olive branch extended to him by HH. He should embrace it and make himself a political counsel to other politicians.”

Kazabu said Lungu’s regime was very brutal to President Hichilema and other Zambians “who lost their lives”.

“Innocent people died all for the want of Lungu to remain in power. HH was arrested and taken to Mukobeko on trumped up charges. There is a limit one can absorb what HH went through. Lungu should thank HH. I keep on wondering what would have happened to some of these PF characters if HH had the traits of a dictator. I wonder where some of these people would have been,” he said.

Asked what would happen if PF was to bounce back in 2026, Kazabu said, “I shudder to imagine”.

“I shudder. That would be a catastrophy because they have shown their true colours. The brutality they did to us is unmeasurable. It sends shivers to think that one day they can bounce back. Then we will start looking for where to go to,” said Kazabu. “Zambians would be betraying themselves if they allowed such a thing to happen. I would not mind another new party taking over from the UPND some day, but certainly not PF.”

TIME NOT ON HH, UPND’s SIDE – BRILL

TIME NOT ON HH, UPND’s SIDE – BRILL

By Edwin Mbulo in Livingstone

THE greatest enemy for UPND is time, 2026 is looking like tomorrow, says Southern Province Socialist Party secretary Aggephrey Brill.

In a statement to The Mast, Brill said the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema are panicking.

“The greatest enemy for HH and the UPND as a whole is time, which is not on their side. HH is haunted by time and 2026 is now looking like tomorrow,” he said. “HH is trying by hook and crook to turn the lies he articulated in his 2021 campaign into reality but it is just not working as he thought.

This is not surprising because like comrade Fred M’membe says ‘lies have very short legs’.” Brill said President Hichilema’s “lies are taking him nowhere but just into self-shame and confusion”.

“This has resulted in HH and UPND operating in a punic. UPND is divided into two groups and not attractive to most Zambians. There is a first group from the UPND who think maybe one day HH will turn out like a hero and will perform a miracle in our favour, our economy. This is a fake hope because of the old capitalistic economics which HH and [finance minister Dr Situmbeko] Musokotwane practice.

These can’t spin our economy any more but will only sell out Zambians to the USA and other Western countries,” he argued. “The other half from UPND which is a bigger bloc have lost all hope in HH and UPND like other Zambians. Southern Province that once in whole believed in HH as a saviour is now seeing him as an infamous stingy like man. A sorry sight indeed for Southern Province in particular and Zambia in general.”

Brill said President Hichilema was practicing patriarchy policies and economics.

He said the UPND cares less for women and youths.

“Patriarchy is an evil misplaced prejudice that make those who practice it believe that they are better than the common people. They think they are better than the female folks or the young and hence manipulate them and place themselves as top dogs in decision making and profit gain,” he said. “They tax little village girls and women every month on sanitary pads.”

Brill accused NGOs of playing to the gallery by being silent on sanitary pads.

“NGOs claim to represent people, women, in particular for NGOCC and the YWCA but mostly they serve the interest of their funders than our Zambian people. They are only protecting their financial interests and now are failing to speak for women.

Yes, Madam Mutinta Hichilema did donate sanitary pads at Chaba School in Livingstone. I thought this would be done throughout Zambia and perpetually, but alas this was only a display of public relations not from the heart of the mother,” charged Brill. “HH is in a dire straits. His time is done.

This loss of trust in HH and the whole UPND leadership across Zambia is the greatest signal that time is out on the side of HH.”

I WILL SERVE MY SIX-MONTH SUSPENSION HONOURABLY- Mongu Mayor

I WILL SERVE MY SIX-MONTH SUSPENSION HONOURABLY

Good morning fellow residetns.

On Monday, 20th February 2022, a Special Council Meeting was called to deliberate on a motion bordering on misconduct brought up against my office and Kambule Ward councillor Jimmy Kaumba. The petition was signed by 15 councillors, but a number of them rescinded their decision during the preliminary stage of the motion, and before the meeting, which I duly chaired as Mayor. Among those who signed the petition was the deputy mayor, Cllr Suzyo Ng’uni.

As per the requirement of the law, I declared interest at the stage when it was time to debate the motion, but since my deputy was also among those who had petitioned me, I requested that he should also not chair the proceedings for he had an interest. This was agreed to by the Council, and I left the chamber.

However, I later came to learn from a press statement signed by Mongu town clerk, Mr Oliver Muuka that after ‘protracted’ debate and without a vote, I had been suspended as Mongu Mayor for a period of six months for misconduct and other issues I would not want to belabour. My two fellow councillors, Mr Kaumba and Mr Mwangala, I was told had also been suspended from the Council. Strangely, Mr Muuka in his press statement forgot to mention that. I leave it at that.

Clearly, my six-month suspension as Mongu Mayor is unjust, it goes against the rules of natural justice, it is a situation where people resort to use the law to settle political scores, it is inspired by hatred, spite and malice directed at my person and at those who are seen to align with me politically. In short, my suspension is politically-engineered.

But for the love of our party, UPND, unjust as the decision by a few known individuals to suspend me as Mongu Mayor for a maximum period of six months maybe; painful as it maybe to the people of Mongu, who, despite my human flaws, I have served with a spirit of transparency and accountability; hate-inspired as this decision maybe, I will not drag our UPND government to court over this.

I will serve my six-month suspension as Mongu Mayor honourably. We forgive and forget, for vengeance is for God. . Business was disrupted on my account in Mongu yesterday. Journalists were also not spared from harassment by our cadres. Not in my name.

On second thoughts, even if I have every right to escalate this to the courts of law, I wouldn’t want to be used as an excuse by those who are not shy of playing dirty politics, to continue stifling people’s rights and freedoms. I would rather carry this burden alone. As I am writing this press statement, I just came from the police station after receiving a call out yesterday. I want to thank the police command for Western division for tolerance and professionalism exbited. I received valuable counsel from our men in uniform.

During this six-month suspension, I will lay low but continue all the developmental initiatives among them the market revolving fund, nurses scholarships, we embarked upon from the time I was voted as Mongu Mayor. Those activities, it should be noted, have not been suspended. We will continue to honour our pledges and follow them through to their logical conclusion, in line with the very clear UPND Manifesto and the Eighth National Development Plan. Ours is for the development of Mongu, and if politics stands in the way of achieving those objectives in certain spaces, we will step aside and pursue those development objectives through other legal means.

A bad precedence has been created and will lie in it as local government leaders in Zambia!..

For now, I remain,

Your Chief Servant

French government overcomes votes of no confidence

0

Two attempts to overthrow French President Emmanuel Macron‘s administration in the country’s parliament have failed, paving the way for the implementation of his wildly unpopular pension reforms and igniting fresh demonstrations in Paris.

Last Thursday, the government used special constitutional powers to enact contentious legislation that would raise the retirement age for the majority of workers from 62 to 64.
The no-confidence votes that were held on Monday were requested by lawmakers who were against the action.

The first resolution, which was presented by the small parliamentary group “LIOT,” which is made up of a number of minor parties, was thought to pose the greatest threat to the ruling party.
Only nine votes separated the 278 votes it obtained from the required 287 votes for passage.

The second vote – tabled last week by far-right party National Rally – drew less support, with only 94 lawmakers voting in favor.

The government’s narrow survival will exacerbates the legitimacy crisis that Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s cabinet and Macron’s presidency are facing.

“The Prime Minister must resign, taking her reform with her,” said Mathilde Panot, parliamentary leader of the communist party, following the vote.

The opposition is now looking to appeal to France’s constitutional council, the highest constitutional body in the country, in order to block part or all of the law. The council would have up to a month to consider any objections to the legislation.

Meanwhile, popular anger against the reforms shows no sign of ending, with protestors gathering in central Paris following the votes and clashing with police.

CNN affiliate BFMTV showed footage of spontaneous gatherings of people marching and chanting slogans against the government, and images showed trash being set on fire.

There was heavy police presence across the capital as demonstrators moved between locations. At least 70 people were detained in the city during the demonstrations on Monday evening local time, a police source told CNN.

With one of the lowest retirement ages in the industrialized world, France also spends more than most other countries on pensions at nearly 14% of economic output, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation.

The government argues that the current system – relying on the working population to pay for a growing age group of retirees – is no longer fit for purpose.

Over the weekend, with protesters gathering spontaneously in several cities to decry both the reform and the government’s use of constitutional Article 49.3 to force the bill through the National Assembly without a vote – a tactic seen by critics as undemocratic.

There were 169 people detained during protests across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry.

In addition, workers in various sectors have been taking industrial action to protest the move.

Authorities in charge of civil air traffic asked airlines to cancel 20% of their flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Air France warned of flight cancellations in the upcoming days.

Oil refineries and storage facilities were also impacted, with 39% of TotalEnergie workers on strike Monday, according to a statement from the company, and more than 10,000 tons of garbage littering the streets of Paris as trash collectors have been on strike for the past two weeks.

Unions have called for nationwide strikes and protests this Thursday, hoping to bring the country to a standstill.

At their height two weeks ago, street protests gathered 1.28 million people across the country, according to the French Interior Ministry.

General Eric Chimese refuses to open up on 9 flats, luxurious house

Chimese refuses to open up on 9 flats, luxurious house

FORMER Zambia Airforce Commander Lieutenant General Eric Chimese has told the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court that he will not waste time justifying assertions that he concealed the source of his “illegally” gotten wealth.

Lt General Chimese indicated that he will remain tight lipped for ‘concealing’ nine fully furnished apartments on property no. 2303/Q
in Ibex Hill, which are suspected to be proceeds of crime and a Luxurious house which his associate, James Chungu a proprietor of Chita lodge, claims ownership.

The accused could also not explain himself on accusations of abusing his authority by deploying skilled junior officers in the Zambia Airforce to work at the said property, as established by the prosecution team.

The former Service Chief is charged with abuse of authority and is jointly charged with his ally Chungu for money laundering.

Prior to opening his defence before magistrate Nsunge Chanda, Lt General Chimese’s lawyer Kelvin Fube Bwlaya indicated that his client will bite the tongue and no one will aide his case.

“We have a change of instructions having looked at the indictment and the evidence adduced in Court so far, Lt General Chimese has opted to remain silent and is not calling any defense witness,” Bwalya said.

In his defence Chungu said the properties donated to Chimese by the State, belong to him as they were constructed by Chita lodge.

He said Chita lodge Limited was incorporated in 2001 and has been in existence for over 20 years.

Chungu popularly known as Jimmy fingers produced tittle deeds before court proving that property no. 2303/Q in Ibex Hill belonged to Chita lodge and not his acquaintance.

He said he never transacted on the property with Lt General Chimese whom he had known from the University of Zambia where he was training as a pilot.

Chungu explained that he purchased the property from late pilot captain Godfrey Mulundika at US$40, 000 and he obtained a loan from ZANACO.

“The land was 20 acres I subdivided the plot and I remained with 10 acres. I sold part of it to General David Muma, his company called 360 is the one I signed off 3 acres. I further sold off 1.5 acres to Mr Muchaila Ilunga and I sold off two plots to a Mrs Youyo and a 50 by 100 to Misheck Sichinga and Judith Sichella and a 50 by 100 to General Muma. I retained 10 acres under Chita lodge,” Chungu said.

“I did not conceal the property me and the General did not engage in any transactions, I have been doing clean business. Chita lodge is responsible for the construction of the property. Unless selling rooms for business is money laundering then am guilty.”

He said he did not inform a security guard at Pre-Secure firm Steven Mbewe that he was repossessing the nine flats and the fancy house on the premise that Lt General Chimese had failed to pay for them.

Chungu told magistrate Chanda that no ZAF employee worked at his premises to install electrical fittings, fit windows, Chandeliers and tiles in the nine flats as Chita Lodge contracted a Zimbabwean Tendai Masaka and a construction company.

“At no time did I conceal ownership of the property on behalf of the general, it has always been in the hands of Chita lodge. I did not do anything commercial with General Chimese. As a director of Chita lodge, I built the properties using loans and sells from my business and part of the land I sold to General Muma and others,” maintained Chungu.

The matter comes up today for cross examination.

Hundreds jailed in savage protests over French government’s implementation of higher retirement age

0

In France, at least 310 individuals have been jailed as a result of protests against the struggling government’s imposition of pension reforms that will result in a two-year increase in the retirement age.

The majority of the 258 arrests made on Thursday night, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, were in Paris, the French radio station RTL said.
The streets of the city were calm by Friday morning, but as a result of the unplanned protests on Thursday night, government ministers were on the defensive.

The controversial plans to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 were rammed through by the government on Thursday, inflaming the nation’s weeks-long protest movement.

Government spokesperson Olivier Veran and Budget Minister Gabriel Attal both repeated President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that the government hadn’t wanted to use its constitutional power to push through the law. They were speaking to French outlets, LCI and France Inter respectively.

“If we don’t do [the reforms] today, it’s much more brutal measures that we will have to do in future,” Attal said.

Protesters briefly blocked Paris’ ring road on Friday morning in protest at the pension reform, causing long delays to the morning commute, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

And a strike by garbage workers that has left many streets in Paris full of trash bags is continuing. Interior minister Darmanin said he would order police to force some of them to work.

“I respect the strike of the garbage collectors,” he said, “however, what is not acceptable is unsanitary conditions.”

In a note Thursday night, the interior ministry, in the context of the reaction to the pension reforms, called on security forces to “firmly maintain” protections for elected officials in France, who, “are sometimes the object of threats, insults, or even malicious acts such as damage to property.”

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced in the National Assembly earlier Thursday that Macron would trigger special constitutional powers to enact the proposed pension reform bill.

“We cannot bet on the future of our pensions,” Borne said amid jeers and chants from lawmakers. “This reform is necessary.”

Labor leaders in France called for new demonstrations following Borne’s announcement, with several thousand people converging at Paris’ Place de la Concorde and in several other cities in France on Thursday evening.

“By resorting to [constitutional article] 49.3, the government demonstrates that it does not have a majority to approve the two-year postponement of the legal retirement age,” tweeted Laurent Berger, head of the CFDT, one of the unions leading the protests.

Philippe Martinez, head of the CGT trade union, also called for more strikes and protests, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

Massive protests have been held regularly throughout France since mid-January, with millions turning out to voice their opposition to the government’s plan. Mass strikes have hit transport and education.

The government has argued that reform is necessary to keep the pension system’s finances out of the red in the coming years.

“The aim is to balance the accounts without raising taxes or cutting pensions. Various options are on the table, but all include raising the retirement age,” government spokesman Olivier Veran told journalists in January, according to Reuters.

The pension reform bill passed the French Senate earlier on Thursday, but would have faced more of a hurdle passing the National Assembly – the lower house of the country’s parliament.

The session was stopped early for Borne’s announcement. Lawmakers erupted into chaotic scenes as she explained the government’s decision, fighting to be heard as lawmakers sang French national anthem “La Marseillaise” and others held signs reading “No to 64 years.”

Borne also criticized far-right lawmakers in the lower house for not backing the legislation.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, called for the prime minister to step down.

“After the slap that the Prime Minister just gave the French people, by imposing a reform which they do not want, I think that Elisabeth Borne should go,” tweeted Le Pen on Thursday.

Pension reform in France, where the right to retire on a full pension at 62 is deeply cherished, is always a highly sensitive issue and even more so now with social discontent mounting over the surging cost of living.

But with one of the lowest retirement ages in the industrialized world, France also spends more than most other countries on pensions at nearly 14% of economic output.

KALULUSHI TEACHER BAPTIZED INTO TEAR GAS BY POLICE WIFE

By Jackson Mwewa Chabala Junior

A middle aged man in Kalulushi has disappeared into thin air after his wife whilst on duty met him engrossed with a shameless teen girl.

According to available sources, Allan Kunda, a 32 year old teacher at a named Secondary School, driving a vehicle with Traffic Number EAAF 1673, today whilst with a teen girlfriend whose name authorities have withheld near Kawama Compound of Kalulushi, met his wife Mercy Chisha, a police officer, who was reportedly chasing after thieves.

Witnesses have confirmed that Mr. Kunda was just about to open the car door when his eyes bumped into a police uniform. His mind and heart were already battling praying this was not his wife but what he wished not to happen was the reality.

His knees became cold, at this moment, he promised God never to cheat again if He could only blind fold his wife and allow the bitter cup to pass.

His vehicle was facing the guest house where the Wrestle Mania was scheduled, he asked the teen girl to move out of the car and walk to the lodge. Later on, he also tiptoed into the guest house. This happened after the police vehicle drove past them.

However, the wife had seen him but pretended not to so that she could catch the he goat red handed.

Mr. Kunda was thanking his ancestors for the mercy to have Mercy for himself without trouble when someone knocked on the door.

Believing it was the staff from the named lodge bringing them food to pile up some energy for closet work, Mr. Kunda opened the door with a very wide smile only to receive the butt plate of the rifle on the lower lip.

He moved two steps backwards. Before he could react, the wife using her right foot swept his heavy legs. Mr. Kunda almost gave up living, he lazily fell on the floor the Cap flew to the corner of the room. Seeing this, the teen girlfriend, saw the door to save her life but the angry police officer grabbed her K12 pony braids and pushed her to the floor.

She closed the door behind them and fired tear gas into the room to teach them a lesson but her friends, police officers, pushed the door open and dragged Mr. Kunda and Mercy out.

Meanwhile, it is reported that when the police tried to look at Mr. Kunda after dragging out of the room, he disappeared into thin air. Residents, however, confirmed seeing a man with a gray short and one Canvas Shoe on running out of Kawama Compound with a wizard speed.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga asks for weekly demonstrations after being sprayed with tear gas by police

0

In a brief speech to protesters lining up to greet him as he entered Nairobi on Monday, former prime minister and leader of the Kenyan opposition Raila Odinga called for weekly nationwide demonstrations against the high cost of living.

According to his senior adviser Makau Mutua, moments earlier, police in Nairobi shot tear gas and water cannons at his car as they barred his supporters from entering the Serena Hotel, where he was scheduled to hold a news conference.

The protest leader was then forced to move to another part of Nairobi as police prevented his car from entering the Central Business District, where demonstrators and police have been fighting since early in the morning.

“We shall use all available, peaceful, and constitutional means to vindicate our rights,” Odinga said from the sunroof of his car.

Afterward, Odinga drove around Nairobi alongside protesters following his motorcade, which has been repeatedly tear-gassed.

Hundreds of people across the country have taken to the streets to protest against the high cost of daily life.

Police

arrested protesters, including senior opposition politicians, as demonstrations escalated by mid-day local time Monday.

Odinga, who lost the presidential election for a fifth time in August, called for nationwide protests to demonstrate against what he claims, without evidence, is an illegitimate government that stole the election.

Kilifi county senator Stewart Madzayo and Ugunja sub-county lawmaker Opiyo Wandayi were among those arrested and held in Nairobi, according to Odinga’s senior adviser Mutua. Six other officials were also arrested in the capital, he confirmed to CNN, adding the party was still trying to assess the number of arrests.

Members of Odinga’s party accused police of disrupting what they said were peaceful protests and demanded authorities immediately release the arrested politicians.

Police clashed with protesters in Nairobi’s city center, with businesses in the city center shuttered for the day, and in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, where Odinga has substantial support. Clashes were reported in the city of Kisumu, in western Kenya, which is considered a stronghold for Odinga.

High inflation and soaring food prices in the country has led to a cost-of-living crisis for many in Kenya. “We will sustain the protests [beyond Monday] until we get what we deserve,” Mutua said.

A spokesperson for the Kenyan police could not be immediately reached.

Cheap oil prices since 2021 is due to banking concerns

0

On Monday, oil prices dropped to their lowest level in 15 months as investors worried that risks to the global banking industry and a likely rise in interest rates in the US could lead to a recession that would reduce demand for fuel.

By 0950 GMT, May Brent crude futures were trading erratically and were down $2.07, or 2.8%, to $70.90 a barrel.
Before its Tuesday expiration, the U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude contract for April was down $1.88, or 2.8%, at $64.86.

At $65.06 per barrel, the more actively traded May futures were down 2.8%.

Brent and WTI earlier hit lows last registered in December 2021, with WTI sinking below $65 a barrel. Both benchmarks shed more than 10% of their value last week as the banking crisis deepened.

The slide in oil comes despite the historic deal for UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank, to buy Credit Suisse in an attempt to rescue the country’s second-biggest bank.

However, banking stocks and bonds continued to plunge on Monday in a sign that investor confidence remains fragile.

After the deal was announced, The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and other major central banks pledged to enhance market liquidity and support other banks.

“The market focus is on current banking sector volatility and the potential for further rate hikes by the Fed,” said Baden Moore, National Australia Bank’s head of commodity research.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on March 22 despite the recent banking sector turmoil, according to most of the economists polled by Reuters.

However, some executives are calling on the central bank to pause its monetary policy tightening for now but be ready to resume raising rates later.

“Volatility is likely to linger this week, with broader financial market concerns likely to remain at the forefront,” ING Bank analysts said in a note, adding that the looming Fed decision increases week’s Fed meeting adds to uncertainty in markets.

Further out, a ministerial committee of OPEC and producer allies including Russia, together known as OPEC+, is set for April 3. The group agreed in October to cut oil production targets by 2 million barrels per day until the end of 2023.

Former president of Taiwan, to make a historic trip to China

0

Ma Ying-jeou, a former president of Taiwan, will make his first journey to mainland China since the 1949 conclusion of the Chinese Civil War next week.

Ma, a prominent figure in Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, will visit mainland China between March 27 and April 7, according to a statement released by his foundation on Sunday.

According to the foundation, he will pay respects to his ancestors in the southwest Hunan Province and head a group of Taiwanese students who will meet with counterparts from mainland China in several locations.

While the trip is ostensibly a private one it is filled with historic symbolism and comes at a time of deepening tensions over the future of Taiwan.

China’s ruling Communist Party has never controlled Taiwan but claims the self-ruled island democracy as its own and has repeatedly refused to rule out taking it by force.

At the end of the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong’s Communist Party took control of mainland China while the Kuomintang under Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan– with both sides claiming to be the legitimate representative of China in the following decades, until Taiwan’s transition into a democracy in the 1990s.

But more recent decades saw increasingly ties warm between Beijing and the KMT, a rapprochement that reached its peak during Ma’s administration.

Ma served as Taiwan’s president between 2008 and 2016 during which he drew stronger economic ties between China and the democratically ruled island but kept Beijing’s push for reunification at bay.

His perceived closeness to Beijing, particularly on the economic front, sparked protests and a major voter backlash.

The KMT have lost the last two elections to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is much more skeptical toward Beijing and rejects the tacit understanding that both sides acknowledge they belong to “one China,” but with different interpretations of what that entails.

China’s leader Xi Jinping has ramped up economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Taiwan ever since the DPP took power in 2016.

Ma’s historic trip is taking place against that febrile geopolitical backdrop and comes as Taiwan and the United States ramp up efforts to counter China’s growing military capabilities.

His trip will also come at a politically sensitive time. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen will soon make a stopover in the US en route to diplomatic allies in Latin America, an official with Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council told lawmakers earlier this month. US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also said he plans to meet with her when she is in the US.

Taiwan is scheduled to hold its next presidential election in January next year. Tsai is not eligible for re-election.

Fears of a Chinese invasion have loomed over Taiwan for more than seven decades but they have been supercharged by both Xi’s increased assertiveness and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The KMT has long rejected being characterized as a “pro-Beijing” party. But its leadership, including Ma, have often pushed the need to improve ties.

The KMT’s deputy chairman Andrew Hsia visited Beijing last month to meet with senior Communist Party leader Wang Huning.

In contrast, Beijing has severed official communication with Taiwan’s Tsai-led government.

In 2015, Ma and Xi held a historic face-to-face meeting in Singapore – the first meeting between leaders of the Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party since the end of the Chinese Civil War, although not on either side of the strait.

Ma’s foundation said a meeting between Xi and Ma is not currently being planned for the trip.

Taiwan’s presidential office said in a statement Sunday that Ma will be required to report details of his itinerary to the government before and after his visit to China.

Iraqis still troubled by the effects of the American war two

0

When American soldiers imprisoned Salah Nsaif in Iraq’s infamous Abu Ghraib jail in 2003, he was 32 years old.

He fled his nation twenty years ago and now lives in distant Sweden with his wife and three kids, but the horrors of that country’s war never quite leave him.

“What occurred to me hurt a great deal.
When I left Iraq, it affected my personal relationships, Salah told CNN, adding that he felt imprisoned by his own thoughts.
“I withdrew myself because I didn’t want to see my child or anyone else.
It took me a while to get over my nightmares.

Two decades after the start of the US-led war in the country, Iraqis say that while some of the physical wounds may have healed over time, the psychological trauma from the conflict and its aftermath persists to this day.

On March 20, 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the beginning of the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of disarming it from weapons of mass destruction, a claim that was later debunked.

The invasion of Iraq evolved into an eight-year occupation with American military bases, checkpoints and soldiers dotted all over the country. It was followed by a civil war and a brutal Islamist insurgency that saw Iraq overwhelmed by sectarian violence and communal divisions.

For Salah and his family, the scars of imprisonment are felt to this day, both physically and mentally.

He was stripped naked several times, deprived of food, beaten, taunted by dogs and kept in solitary confinement, he told CNN.

Seeking professional mental health treatment is less common in Arab countries than in Western societies due to a social stigma. That’s why Salah didn’t consult a psychiatrist, he said. Instead, he sought comfort from his family, but it wasn’t always easy.

“You know, in Iraq, we have this culture of not talking to a doctor or a psychiatrist. We don’t even think about it,” he told CNN. “I needed to get out of this circle of fear and anxiety and move forward. At home things were difficult during the first few years with my wife – she became like an alien to me.”

Salah was working as a journalist with the Qatar-based news channel Al Jazeera in Diyala, northeastern Iraq when US forces detained him.

He was never charged with a crime, according to Katherine Gallagher, a lawyer from the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights representing him in a 2008 lawsuit against a US government military contractor that was responsible for the interrogations in Abu Ghraib.

In the years that followed the invasion and the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s government, over 20,000 Iraqi prisoners of war were detained by US army officials.

Approximately 120,000 civilians were killed between the US military invasion and withdrawal, according to Iraq Body Count, an online database that tracks official statements, reports from hospitals and non-governmental organizations to document casualties from the Iraq war.

The Abu Ghraib prison scandal shook the world when it was exposed in 2004. Images of naked, leashed prisoners piled on top of each other in fetal positions as American soldiers smiled at the camera came to define the brutality of the war for many Iraqis.

“They would put a black bag over my head and force me to take my clothes off. They would leave me naked in my cell for days,” Salah said.

In the years that followed, documents that came to be known as the Torture Memos revealed such methods were authorized by the Bush administration under enhanced interrogation techniques. Human Rights Watch said this generally meant torture, sexual assault, and rape.

Abu Ghraib was first used by Hussein to detain Iraqis. The US military took over control from 2003 until 2006. Iraqi officials officially closed it in 2014.

Salah and his family immigrated to Sweden in 2017 and now hold Swedish citizenship. He and his children don’t talk about his ordeal. “They know what happened to me and that I was tortured… but never discussed the details. They just know it from Google.”

Alexandra Chen, a UK-based trauma specialist, told CNN that the trauma of war can be passed down generations, decades after the conflict ends.

“(If) one’s hypervigilance was a key element of them surviving a particularly traumatic period of their life,” she said, then that may “become methylated in your DNA so that your children and your grandchildren, in particular, have that ability to survive.”

Escaping these memories remains difficult for Salah. Twenty years later, he is still waiting for justice.

When the United States withdrew its forces from Iraq in 2011, many Iraqis thought it was the dawn of a new era, one that would heal the horrific remnants of war.

But by the end of that year, a fanatical militant group reemerged that would wreak havoc in the country and far beyond it. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had by 2014 taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria, imposing its radical version of Islamic law in the territories it governed.

Abbas Al Duliami was five years old when the US occupied Iraq. He lived in Baghdad for the first few years until his family fled to Syria in 2007 to escape the carnage. Although he was young, he said he was robbed of a childhood.

Chen says this is prevalent in younger Iraqis.

“We assume that when they’re so young they don’t remember anything”, said Chen, adding that science shows the first five years of life are the most sensitive for brain growth.

Abbas returned to Baghdad with his family in 2011 hoping to start over, but ISIS threatened that new life with more upheaval, leading them to move again.

Now finishing his education in the United Arab Emirates, he said nightmares of war continue to haunt him.

“Growing up during these years was hard because I was a kid watching people being kidnapped or killed on the streets for years. It stays with me,” he told CNN.

For those who weren’t fortunate enough to escape, the trauma became a permanent part of their lives.

Ghofran Mohammed, 28, who still lives in Baghdad, was eight years old when the US invaded. She recalls watching soldiers arrest people daily.

She never spoke about the war with a mental health professional and said her family encouraged her to move on from the trauma.

“My parents told me to forget what I saw and continue my life and education after they saw I was traumatized,” she told CNN.

Chen, the trauma specialist, says children can absorb their parents’ distress when they start believing that they are the cause of the distress. That can affect their romantic relationships and their relationships with children, she says.

While therapy helps, she adds, it’s not the solution. “This is not rocket science. And the solution… in addition to the prevention of traumas, is for the wars to stop.”

Netanyahu government makes first climbdown on plan to weaken Israel’s judiciary

The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a change Monday to a key part of its controversial plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system. Opposition leaders inside and outside the legislature immediately rejected the proposed changes as insufficient. The concession would give Israeli governments less power to select new judges – but still more power than it has now. The lawmaker leading the overhaul process, Simcha Rothman, announced the change to government plans, and also said parliament would delay passage of other elements of the plan until after the parliament’s Passover holiday in April.

  • Background: The original bill to change how judges are selected would have established a selection committee where coalition-appointed members would have a clear majority. The new plan reduces the power of the coalition, giving them a one-seat majority of appointed spots on the judge selection committee. In another concession, it says that once two supreme court judges have been appointed by the committee, further judges can only be selected by a supermajority of the committee.
  • Why it matters: The change announced by the government marks its first climbdown in the face of massive public protests and international pressure. For months, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have regularly taken to the streets to protest the overhaul. They’ve been joined by senior figures in Israel’s security, high-tech, financial and academic fields. Leaders of the Israel’s allies, including the US and Germany, have also expressed concern, calling for “consensus” to be reached on the reforms instead of the government imposing unilateral measures.

Iranian president invited to visit Riyadh by Saudi king – Iranian official

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz has written to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi inviting him to Riyadh, Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs to Iran’s President Mohammad Jamshidi tweeted on Sunday, adding that Raisi welcomed the invitation and stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation. There has been no confirmation by Saudi Arabia of the letter or invitation. Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said during a news conference on Sunday that the two countries had agreed to hold a meeting between their top diplomats.

  • Background: On March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to restore ties in a Chinese-brokered deal seven years after diplomatic relations were severed between the two countries. Riyadh cut ties with Tehran in 2016 after its embassy was attacked following the Saudi execution of a prominent Shiite cleric, Nimr al-Nimr.

  • Why it matters: A rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia could have a significant impact in calming regional tensions after decades of rivalry between the two that saw them engage in proxy conflicts in the Middle East. The Saudi finance minister said last week that it could even spur Saudi investment in Iran.

Yemen’s Houthis and government say prisoner exchange deal reached

The two sides in Yemen’s conflict on Monday said they had agreed to exchange some 880 detainees after talks in Switzerland facilitated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Reuters reported. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group said it would release 181 detainees, including 15 Saudi and three Sudanese, in exchange for 706 prisoners from the government, according to statements on Twitter by the head of the Houthis’ prisoner affairs committee Abdul Qader al-Murtada and the group’s chief negotiator Mohammed Abdulsalam.

  • Background: The exchange of around 15,000 conflict-related detainees has been under discussion as a key confidence-building measure under a December 2018 UN-mediated deal known as the Stockholm Agreement. UN special envoy Hans Grundberg told the UN Security Council last week that there were intense diplomatic efforts at different levels to end the fighting in Yemen.

  • Why it matters: There is hope that a deal could facilitate broader efforts to end the hostilities, which have been helped by the resumption of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia this month. The conflict in Yemen has widely been seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

A group of archeologists in the United Arab Emirates on Monday found what they believe to be the oldest pearling town in the Persian Gulf on Siniya Island, just east of the Umm al-Quwain emirate.

The 12-hectare (30-acre) town functioned between the late 6th and mid-8th centuries, predating the Islamic civilization, according to the Umm al-Quwain Department of Tourism and Archeology.

The findings show the town to be one of the “largest surviving urbanized settlements ever found” in what is today the UAE, and is believed to have housed thousands of residents, many of whom relied on the pearling industry. The houses were built from local beach rocks and materials from the surrounding environment and roofs were made of palm trunks.

While other pearling settlements are known to have existed in the region, this one is particularly unique, said Timothy Power, associate professor of archaeology at UAE University. Not only because of its age and size, but also because it was not seasonal, but rather operated year-round, he said.

“This is a different order of settlements, this is a proper town,” Power told CNN, adding that it was densely populated with a range of housing types, and included various socio-economic groups.

Residents of the town were likely Christian, as the settlement is located near an ancient Christian monastery that was discovered just last year, Power said.

The practice of pearling, where divers recover pearls from oysters or mussels from seas and lakes, has been part of the region’s heritage for more than 7,000 years, according to the Umm al-Quwain Department of Tourism.

“We know from historical clauses that there were other important pearling markets in this period,” Power said, but it was clear that pearling was a key industry for this town.

At peak times of the pearling market, huge numbers of people were involved in the industry, Power said. In neighboring Abu Dhabi, he added, almost two-thirds of the male population were involved in pearling in the 19th century.

Vote of no-confidence against Macron on despised pension measures

0

After forcing through controversial pension reforms, French President Emmanuel Macron will face votes of no-confidence on Monday, drawing outrage from parliamentarians and nationwide protests.

Whatever of the outcome, Macron’s government is expected to survive the motions, and he will continue to serve as president. Yet, the backlash against the reforms doesn’t appear to be abating.

The contentious law to raise the retirement age for the majority of workers from 62 to 64 was forced through by the French government on Thursday by using special constitutional powers.

On Friday, French lawmakers filed two motions of no-confidence against the Prime Minister – one from a grouping of small parties, and one from National Rally, a far-right party.

In order to be successful, the majority of sitting lawmakers – 287 of them – would need to vote in favor.

If successful, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne would have to resign and the pension reform legislation would be rejected. This would leave French President Emmanuel Macron with the option to either replace the prime minister or dissolve the parliament.

The move to oust Macron’s government is believed to be unlikely to succeed, however, since the pension reforms also have the support of the Republican party, making it harder for the rest of the opposition parties to get the absolute majority needed.

“There will be no majority for these votes of no confidence. Responsibly, we do not want to add chaos to chaos and let our country sink into disorder,” the leader of the Republican group Eric Ciotti tweeted.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire also downplayed suggestions that the vote might be successful.

“There will be no majority to bring the government down, but it will be a moment of truth,” Le Maire told local news outlet Le Parisien.

“I understand our countrymen’s fears and anxieties, but we will definitely not improve things by denying economic reality,” he added.

Yet the protests took aim not only at the pension reform, but the constitutional power used to force it through.

Unable to gain majority support for the bill in parliament, Macron resorted to using Article 49.3, which enabled his government to pass the bill through the National Assembly without a vote.

The move has been widely condemned by protesters and lawmakers as undemocratic.

“We are facing a president who makes use of a permanent coup d’état,” Olivier Faure, leader of the French Socialist Party, told local media Thursday.

Over the weekend, protesters gathered spontaneously in several cities, sometimes clashing with the police.

There were 169 people detained during protests across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry.

In addition, workers in various sectors have been taking industrial action to protest the move.

Authorities in charge of civil air traffic have asked airlines to cancel 20% of their flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Air France has warned of flight cancellations in the upcoming days.

Oil refineries and storage facilities are also impacted, with 39% of TotalEnergie workers on strike Monday, according to a statement from the company, and more than 10,000 tons of garbage are littering the streets of Paris as trash collectors have been on strike for the past two weeks.

And the situation could worsen as unions have called for nationwide strikes and protests this Thursday, hoping to bring the country to a standstill.

REALITIES OF THIS LIFE – IT’S NOT HH’S PROBLEM THAT ECONOMY IS BITING

By Emmanuel Chilekwa
REALITIES OF THIS LIFE – IT’S NOT BALLY’S PROBLEM THAT ECONOMY IS BITING

■ Be the solution, not the problem
■ Life has always been challenging from time immemorial
■ Public leaders go in to serve their interests
■ No government will deliver breakfast, lunch to your table
■ Blaming Bally for hardships is just a personal scapegoat

This morning, let me speak some hard reality truth and make somebody see things positively : economic hardships have always been the same, from time immemorial – what needs to change is our attitude, actions to the challenges.

If in 1964 things were better when we had our own POUND currency, when we had 100% free education, we could all have been filthy rich as offsprings of our rich parents. But still, there were challenges.

During KK’s time, he even used to give us mealie meal coupons (6 per family), you just present the coupon at ZCBC and you get your 50kg mealie meal bag. So each family had 300kg of FREE mealie meal, at government expense. But even then, our parents had economic challenges that’s why government chipped in to alleviate challenges.

Came 1991, democracy reintroduced. FTJ’s first word was “are you ready to sacrifice?” And we all sang one answer in unison response:Yeeeees !!! And the hour of economic liberation really never came as the MMD promised. More jobs were lost and hundreds of State companies were sold to private capitalists – and that’s the genesis of ever increasing unemployment rates, increased thefts and looting or plunder. It was in this time that public officers learnt to loot public resources using and available window. And that’s what prompted late President, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa to resign – citing rampant CORRUPTION.

Then PF came to power in 2011 on the backbone of more money, more jobs, lower taxes. Did these promises come to bear? It’s debatable. Still the poor lot increased, more street children and 10 years later, the citizens decided to chuck PF out.

In 2021, change was made (courtesy of the youths) who were promised to either be in school or at work, mealie meal at K50, then 8 bags of fertilizer per farmer, strengthened Kwacha against the Dollar (by 14hours), rule of law – alas, now you’re seeing arrests being made when a barber man just produces a video complaining about how tough the economic situation is, so best is to just ignore there are hardships or just keep quiet to fool those in leadership and at hypocritical level – sing praises even if you dont know what to praise them for. Praise them for the increased hardships. Now you understand that the more we change, the more things remain the same or even get worse.

Now therefore, what should one do? Here are my recommendations:

■ Never think change of government will change your household poverty;
■ Change of household poverty is a personal effort, it’s not government task to buy you breakfast or lunch;
■ If life has been better than today, most of us could have bought streets lined up with hundreds of properties, or bought helicopters, farms etc. The fact that we failed to do that since 1964 means life has long being full of economic challenges;
■ It’s not Bally’s problem that you and me are suffering. Problem is personal – how do we see and seize opportunities? Even on a rubbish dump, there are opportunities you can utilise.
■ Learn to put time to research for development. Stop spending time complaining. That’s wasting precious time in negativity energy;
■ There’s no government on earth which provides you personal development (Muammar Ghaddafi of Libya is long dead, he’s the only leader who looked at family and personal level challenges);
■ Realise that all public leaders in government go in to eat, to serve their friends and families and you the nonentity whom they use as a mere ladder to attain their selfish grandiose personal mission remain ku wire, gnashing your teeth in pungent poverty pangs;
■ If you are a believer, and you see everyone is complaining, don’t join the chorus of complainants, you be the solution to the problems. Read about Joseph of the Bible. It’s when things or situation is dire, desperate, helpless that Believers – who are the salt of the earth, become providers. Unfortunately, Believers tend to dwarf themselves and give space to earthists to help them live better, that’s abomination.

To end my presentation, am saying : watch and pray, wake up, dress up and show up. You’re not a tree to be at the same location of problems or challenges – move, if need be, relocate to anywhere you believe is better for you.

Don’t be a loud speaker of others’ problems or challenges – you’re not Chilufya Tayali the public lawyer, be in your own lane.

Cornelius Mweetwa wrong on HH’s use of Ukutumpa says George Mpombo

0

Former Defence Minister George Mpombo has criticized the United Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa for defending President Hakainde Hichilema’s personal attacks on his predecessor, Edgar Lungu. Dr Mpombo has stated that President Hichilema’s assault on the integrity of Mr Lungu was uncalled for and beyond justification politically or morally.

In response to a statement by Mr Mweetwa that opposition political parties had taken the use of the Bemba word “Ukutumpa” out of context, Dr Mpombo argued that despite being provoked, former President Levy Mwanawasa never harboured any hard feelings. He said Mr Mwanawasa never used to hold grudges against his political opponents and that his leadership was praised by the nation when he authorized Mr Sata’s evacuation to South Africa for medical treatment.

Dr Mpombo added that what Mr Mwanawasa purportedly said to Mr Sata faded into insignificance as compared to the words uttered by President Hichilema in Kitwe, considering the Head of State’s body language and tone of his voice. He said the public and the church should have admonished President Mwanawasa if the comments were perceived as a threat on the late Mr Sata.

Dr Mpombo stated that Mr Mweetwa’s assertions in Livingstone were morally and politically bankrupt and had loopholes through which a herd of elephants would be driven through. Mr Mweetwa, who is also Southern Province Minister, has expressed concern over the continued abuse of President Hichilema’s use of the term “Kutumpa Uko” during his recent public address on the Copperbelt Province.

Mr Mweetwa said opposition political parties had taken the statement out of context and that the cliché “Kutumpa” was a common saying, widely used in the Zambian vocabulary when referring to something that is not acceptable. He pointed out that Mr Mwanawasa and Mr Lungu had used that cliché during their reign.

“President Mwanawasa did at one point use the term in reference to the leading opposition party leader then Michael Sata, ‘Nga watumpa; fyala kubipila,’ and also President Edgar Lungu once he took over the reins of leadership of this country did address union leaders who then had indicated that he had failed to provide leadership of this country by saying ‘Kutumpa for the union leaders to say I have failed’,” Mr Mweetwa explained.

President Hichilema’s use of the term “Kutumpa Uko” has generated controversy, with some accusing him of using inappropriate language. However, Mr Mweetwa has defended the President, arguing that the term is widely used and that opposition parties are taking it out of context.

,Dr Mpombo has criticized Mr Mweetwa’s defense of President Hichilema’s personal attacks on his predecessor as morally and politically bankrupt. He has argued that President Hichilema’s assault on the integrity of Mr Lungu was uncalled for and beyond justification politically or morally. Meanwhile, Mr Mweetwa has defended the President’s use of the term “Kutumpa Uko,” stating that it is a common saying in Zambia and that opposition parties are taking it out of context.

MILES SAMPA’S CASE IN HIGH COURT

Details so far…

Lusaka- Monday, 20th March 2023

The case in which Matero MP, Miles Sampa has sued Patriotic Front Acting Secretary General, Nixon Chilangwa and Acting President Given Lubinda came up today before Lusaka High Court Judge, Timothy Katenekwa.

Earlier Sampa had sought to cite senior officials of the party with contempt proceedings.

However Sampa’s lawyers have so far failed to serve the summons to the PF officials.

They have applied for what is called “substitute service” in which the case could proceed if lawyers for the PF officials could receive the contempt summons on their behalf.

They alleged that the PF officials were evading service.

The rules regarding commital of contempt proceedings require that the plaintiff’s lawyers serve those cited for contempt in person.

When the matter came up on 3rd March 2023 Sampa’s lawyers claimed that they were unable to serve the officials.

Sampa is being represented by Iven Levi Legal Practitioners while the PF is being represented by Jonas Zimba of Makebi Zulu Advocates.

When the matter came up for hearing, lawyers argued on the merit of the contempt proceedings to set aside the motion for committal of contempt proceedings.

The main matter in which Sampa is challenging his six weeks suspension and the legitimacy of the two officials has NOT started yet as the Court was hearing a preliminary issue of contempt proceedings.

Zambia not ready to host Democracy Summit – Mundubile

0

BRIAN Mundubile has called for cancelation of the Democracy Summit Zambia is expected to co-host with the United States as well as the governments of Costa Rica, the Netherlands and Republic of Korea on grounds that Zambia’s record on human rights under the UPND has been dented by human rights violations.

Mr. Mundubile, the Leader of the Opposition Patriotic Front said while government was preparing to host the Democracy Summit, Zambia was experiencing serious human rights violeation with the arrest of 22 peaceful protesters who were airing their views on a range of national issues.
Mr Mundubile said until and unless the UPND government improved its human rights record and stopped the arbitrary arrests and dentation of citizens for political reasons, Zambia was not ready to host the Democracy Summit
He said a number of journalists had recently been detentions without being charged after they were arrested for performing their duties.

Mr. Mundubile said President Hakainde Hichilema while on the Copperbelt issued derogatory remarks and investctives against his predecessor, former President Edgar Lungu apart from threatening the former head of State with arrest.
Mr Mundubile said President Hichilema was threatening Mr Lungu for only going to church for worshipping, stating that it was undemocratic for the head of State to threaten to curtail the rights and freedoms of his predecessor.

He said the human rights violation in the country were not what the international community was expecting of a Constitutional Democracy such as Zambia.
“We are a Constitutional Democracy. One eminent writer has penned thus; “The greatness of any nation lies in the fidelity to the constitution.” what we are seeing today is a violation of the Constitution in many aspects. Zambians are no longer free to assemble and associate. We had 22 Zambians who were recently arrested for merely attempting to assemble and express themselves over a range of national matters they were aggrieved with. We must not just be preaching democracy, we must indeed be seen to be practising it and our governance should be based on the rule of law and not at the whims of those in leadership,” Mr Mundubile said.

Mr. Mundubile said the country had seen a shrinking media and civic space under UPND and that it was feared that the UPND could turn out to be the most oppressive government ever.

“To host a Democracy Summit at a time like this will be very difficult. It shall be difficult in the sense that you cannot be sitting in a room discussing democracy when you have your citizens being opressed,” he said.
Mr. Mundubile wondered what the UPND administration would present at the Summit given the many examples of violation of Human Rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

“We want to see what kind of poetry government officials are going to present at the Summit given that they have not acted democratically in many instances,” Mr Mundubile said.

SOLDIER GETS PRESIDENTIAL PROMOTION

SOLDIER GETS PRESIDENTIAL PROMOTION

ON Friday, March 18, Sergeant Lwando Abel received an unexpected opportunity for promotion from President Hakainde Hichilema on a very unexpected occasion.

Sergeant Lwando was the only non-commissioned officer on the induction parade of 29 commissioned officers, making the total number 30.

The 36-year-old was promoted from corporal to sergeant by the President for his interest in serving the nation through the Special Forces Corps after attempting twice the operatives’ training.

Sgt Lwando was born in Milambo village in Mansa district to parents Abel Lwando and Joyce Chileya, who are both small-scale farmers.

He started school at Mulumbi Primary School in 1997, where he went up to grade seven.

In 2002, he moved to Ndola on the Copperbelt to live with his cousin, Evans Ng’andwe and resumed his high school education at Tag Argan High School, which he completed in 2007.

In 2019, Sgt Lwando joined the Army, passed out under the corp of the Zambia Army Infantry, and volunteered to join the Special Forces Corps in 2021.

Despite the hurdles associated with Special Forces training, Sgt Lwando has attributed his achievement to perseverance and determination, and he didn’t want to believe that it was not possible for him to finish the training.

In the Special Forces Corps, Sgt Lwando is a member of the 48 Marine Unit.

The Marine Unit of the Special Forces is responsible for tackling any mission given by the commander-in-chief, including counterterrorism, heliborne operations, maritime operations, parachute operations, urban operations, climbing operations, and many more operations. In peacetime, the units undertake operations in conjunction with the DMMU.

In commending him, his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Bright Tatile, describes Sgt Lwando as a good soldier with a strong work ethic.

A devoted and baptized member of the Catholic Church, Sgt Lwando dedicates his great achievement to God first, his parents, and his brother-in-law, Ng’andwe, who encouraged him to join the Army.

In the Army, only promotions of commissioned officers, whose ranks start with Second Lieutenant, are a preserve of the President, while non-commissioned officers, whose ranks range from corporal to warrant officer class two, are promoted by the Commander through the authority of the President in a government gazette, making Sgt Lwando a lucky one.

Special Forces are a strategic asset and force multiplier for the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force and can only be deployed at his word.

It is for this reason that Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia and Commander in Chief of the Defence Force, took the opportunity to honour the event by inducting the 30 Special Forces Operatives into the Special Forces Corps.

I will be arrested come Tuesday – Donald Trump reveals

0

Former President of the United States of America (USA) Donald John Trump says he expects some members of the security particularly the FBI to pick him up in a swoop arrest come Tuesday March 21, 2023.

On Saturday, Trump announced he would be arrested on Tuesday in a criminal case involving hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, but there has been no official confirmation on the likelihood that charges will be brought.

Top Republicans, including some of Donald Trump’s potential rivals for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination, rushed to his defence after the former president said he expected to be arrested next week.

“The idea of indicting a former president of the United States is deeply troubling to me, as it is to tens of millions of Americans,” said former vice-president Mike Pence, who is widely expected to launch a campaign for the Republican nomination in the coming weeks.

The reaction underscores the political risks faced by would-be opponents who are eager to convince voters that it is time to move on from the former president, but who must contend with the fact that he remains the most popular figure in the party.

Trump garnered similar support last summer after the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago club as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents. The search also proved a fundraising boon.

Among those coming to Trump’s defence on Saturday were House speaker Kevin McCarthy, who said a possible indictment would be “an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA [district attorney] who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance” against Trump.

McCarthy said he would direct relevant Republican-led House committees “to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions”. McCarthy has not endorsed Trump’s White House campaign, but Trump helped McCarthy secure the speakership after a contentious campaign that required multiple rounds of voting.

McCarthy’s predecessor as speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, said in a statement, “the former president’s announcement this morning is reckless: doing so to keep himself in the news and to foment unrest among his supporters.”

“He cannot hide from his violations of the law, disrespect for our elections and incitements to violence.”

On Saturday, Trump posted a message on his Truth Social platform, referring to himself in the third person, saying: “The far and away leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States of America will be arrested on Tuesday of next week.”

Law enforcement officials in New York have been making security preparations for the possibility that Trump could be indicted, but there has been no public announcement of any timeframe or any indictment.

Donald Trump in Davenport, Iowa, on 13 March.
A spokesperson and a lawyer for Trump said later on Saturday that his post was based on media reports rather than any actual update from, or communication with, prosecutors. Trump’s post cited “illegal leaks from a corrupt and highly political Manhattan district attorney’s office”.

The district attorney’s office declined to comment.

In his post, Trump called on his supporters to “PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!”

The post evoked the message from the then-president that preceded the insurrection by extremist supporters at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 which ultimately failed to thwart the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

TikTok celebrity and mother of two Jehane Thomas passed away.

According to her loved ones, Jehane, 30, unfortunately passed away on Friday. The terrible news comes only days after she posted an emotional video in which she described her agonizing anguish to her admirers.

Isaac, age three, and Elijah, age one, are left behind by their loving mother, a native of Doncaster.

Jehane has been chronicling her fight with debilitating migraines on social media for months.

According to MailOnline, the blogger had also been diagnosed with a painful condition called optic neuritis which is the result of optic nerve inflammation.

Many of the recent videos Jehane shared with her 67,000 followers were filmed in hospital, but just five days ago, she tearfully filmed herself at home.

Trying to sum up just how painful her headaches were, Jehane told her fans: ‘Day two of being home out of my one-week stay at the hospital, and as you can see, I have one of my pressure migraines back.’

Jehane went on: ‘Isaac was late this morning because I physically couldn’t get up to walk or take him to school.

‘I’ve taken one of my tablets. This is the second tablet I’ve taken since being home and I’ve only got six of them, so I’m not really sure what I’m meant to do when I run out of those.’

TikTok star Jehane Thomas tells of ‘pressure migraine’ days before death

Jehane added: ‘I just called my neurologist’s office for advice and they said I should go back to the hospital but I physically cannot lay in that bed any longer.’

A day later, on Wednesday, Jehane was back in hospital, however she did not share any more videos and her close friend Alyx Reast confirmed on a GoFundMe page on Saturday that Jehane had died.

The doting mum’s last Instagram post was shared six days ago and saw her cosying up to her two young sons.

Sharing the picture, Jehane wrote in part: ‘6 days admitted into hospital and I’m finally home with my boys.

‘It’s been a really challenging week, not just physically but mentally. I’ve missed these two so much and feel like they’ve both grown up so much whilst I’ve been away.’

She added: ‘I may be home but I’m still struggling with these migraines as nothing was really done to help them after a whole week of being there and I’d rather self-medicate at home with these around me then me left in a bed on my own all day & night.

‘I may not be fixed but I’m not giving in.’

Billionaire friend of Sarah Ferguson sued for funding a sex trafficking network

0

As per reports, a rich friend of the Duchess of York is being sued in the US for allegedly funding a sex trafficking organization.

Trammell Crow, 72, with whom Sarah Ferguson allegedly struck up a connection, is charged with funding the operation that resulted in the assault of two women.

The court documents submitted in California accuse the £6 billion Texas tycoon of a number of allegations.

The lawsuit was filed by two women, Julia Hubbard and Kayla Goedinghaus against Mr Crow and his associates in a court in November, it has been reported.

They claimed that the ring was run by a man called Richard Hubbard with the ‘with the essential financial assistance and influence’ of Mr Crow.

The Duchess, 63, and Mr Crow are said to have bonded over their shared interest in environmental issues – their friendship was first reported at the beginning of the month.

The lawsuit claims that Mr Hubbard used ‘force, threats of force, fraud, or coercion to compel Hubbard and Goedinghaus to engage in commercial sex acts’.

The case was filed under laws governing racketeering and it claims that the defendants ‘conspired together’ to commit offences including human trafficking.

The women claim that Mr Hubbard forced the alleged victims to take drugs like Xanax ‘in order to force them to participate in sex acts’.

It is alleged that Mr Crow was ‘key to the venture’s existence and long-running success’ as he invested in it.

The lawsuit states: ‘Crow maintained what he called lingerie rooms in each property he owned in which he kept a variety of lingerie for female guests to wear, as well as what he called ‘stripper shoes’.’

There are a number of other claims in the legal papers about sex parties and drugs that allegedly involved Mr Crow.

In a request to dismiss the case, Mr Crow’s lawyer Ken Stone said the plaintiffs were either married or used to be in relationships with the men they were accusing.

The document states: ‘Plaintiffs’ attempt to leverage their long-running domestic quarrels into federal human trafficking and (racketeering) claims is a cynical attempt to extract financial gain from persons who were unfortunate enough to cross paths with them’.

The allegations include that Ms Hubbard met Mr Crow while she ‘worked at a Dallas gentleman’s club’.

The motion to dismiss states: ‘Ms. Hubbard alleges that she became close friends with Mr. Crow, such that they exchanged text messages, he would ‘allow himself to be photographed with her’ and he invited her to attend charity events while she invited him to her modeling events.

According to Mr Stone there are ‘no allegations that Mr. Crow was ever romantically or sexually involved with Ms. Hubbard’.

The complaint fails to allege any sex trafficking crime against Mr Crow and instead attempts to ‘smear’ him with ‘allegations concerning his lifestyle’, the document states.

In a statement Mr Stone said the accusations were ‘absurd and blatantly false’.

He told The Sun: ‘The story shared by the Plaintiffs is upsetting and paints a picture of numerous troubled and broken domestic relationships.

‘We are certain this will be made clear in future legal proceedings’.

A spokesman for the Duchess said: ‘The Duchess has only met Mr Crow once with others to discuss environmental issues.’

Credit Suisse bank: UBS is in talks to take over its troubled rival

0

Switzerland’s biggest bank, UBS, is in advanced talks to to purchase all or a portion of Credit Suisse, a troubled rival..

After claiming to have discovered “significant weakness” in its financial reporting, Credit Suisse is experiencing a crisis of trust, and its shares have dropped precipitously recently.

The Swiss National Bank’s emergency $54 billion (£44.5 billion) bailout hasn’t made a difference.

Regulators are trying to facilitate a deal before markets reopen on Monday.

There are concerns that Credit Suisse shares could continue to plummet, after they fell 24% on Wednesday.

This prompted a general sell-off on European markets, and fears of a wider financial crisis.

The Swiss government held an emergency meeting on Saturday night, but so far there has been no official statement on the progress of the negotiations.

UBS is said to have asked the Swiss government to cover about $6bn (£4.9bn) in costs if it were to buy Credit Suisse, according to sources quoted by Reuters.

Any deal may also result in significant job losses.

The problems have coincided with the failure of two lenders in the US – Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank – raising fears over the health of the banking system.

Credit Suisse, which was founded in 1856, has faced a string of scandals in recent years, including money laundering charges.

It reported a loss of 7.3bn Swiss francs ($7.9bn; £6.5bn) in 2022 – its worst year since the financial crisis of 2008 – and has warned it does not expect to be profitable until 2024.

UBS, however, made a profit of $7.6bn in 2022.

As well as being a domestic bank with 95 branches, Credit Suisse has a global investment banking operation and manages the assets of rich clients.

It is one of 30 banks worldwide deemed too big to fail because they are of such importance to the international banking system.

At the end of last year Credit Suisse had a global staff of 50,480, including 16,700 in Switzerland, though 9,000 jobs were to be axed, the Swiss broadcaster SRF reports.

Girlfriend films couple’s divorce in court

A brazen side chick of Lusaka who has pushed a couple to divorce visited the Matero Local Court with her Tecno phone to film the couple divorce so that she can show off to her friends that she had finally won.

This was in a matter in which Boyd Tembo was sued for divorce or reconciliation by his wife Veronica Mwila as reported by the Zambia Daily Mail.

However, as the couple were exchanging arguments on who was wrong or right in their marriage, the wife noted that the woman at the centre of their troubles was present in court, and with a smile like she had won Bola Bet, was filming the proceedings.

“Your honour, the same girlfriend, Jessy, where my husband sleeps is over there on the left bench filming us in court,” Veronica told the Magistrate.

For her misplaced shameless courage, the court summoned Jessy to the front and reprimanded her for mocking the woman whose marriage she had wrecked by filming her plead for her marriage before court.

Meanwhile, Veronica told the court that Girlfriend Jessy was so brazen that she would summon her husband from their matrimonial bed and demand that he goes to make love to her as and when she wanted and the husband would obey.

The husband, Tembo, for his part tried to justify his wife’s humiliation saying he was trying to protect his wife hence obeying the girlfriend as she had vowed to place a curse that would result in sudden death on his wife if he dared become faithful to her.

Asked to make his decision between the two women, Tembo told the court that he was choosing Jessy and not the wife.

Noting that matters were beyond correction, Magistrate Harriet Mulenga divorce the couple and ordered Tembo to pay his wife K20,000.

At the announcement of the divorce, Girlfriend Jessy jumped in joy and went outside the court yard to wait for her now single lover.

THE RISE IN NUMBER OF FILLING STATIONS IN ZAMBIA AND CASSINOS MAY BE A REASON FOR CLEANSING TOO MUCH DIRTY MONEY IN THE COUNTRY WHICH IS IN PRIVATE HANDS …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

On the economic part we may be talking advantagebly as a source of employment and enhancement of economic growth , in my view there could be a lot of dirty money in the country which is being commonly invested in these filling stations and cassinos , cleansing dirty money is what most cartels do not to be identified by investigative wings . Any country that has many filling stations and cassinos has dirty money , that involves laundering of corrupt or stolen money into the disguise of businesses like filling stations and cassinos.

In this country we have a lot of former govt officials the own companies that have fuel tankers which transport fuel to this country , some of the trucks are operating in different countries around the subsaharan region , some foreign owners of companies in the country who are transporters have partnered to transport the product in the country on behalf of govt under different foreign names . The recent complaints by drivers who work for some local fuel transporters who indicated that , why did govt allow most fuel transporters for our govt to be foreign based when local fuel transporters are not given business in other countries to ferry fuel.

It was also mentioned that most foreign companies ferrying fuel in this country are owned by former govt officials under unsuspecting names , if this could be true , could it be the reason why we have a rise in the number of filling stations in Zambia ? , It is unprecedented in the history of fuel business in the country , we have seen trucking company names changed after revalations of who the true owners are , we have seen names of filling stations changed because of suspicions by zambians that there money has been stolen and invested by suspected persons , we have seen cassinos built in partnerships with people that are business crooks in the name of investors .

This country will continue to be under very invisible cartel controls if most of what is going on is not addressed , the country has lost a lot of tax payers money which is in private and personal hands , the country is poorer than individuals that have stolen from it , how can any govt narrow the gap between the rich and the poor under such extreme circumstances?, how long is it going to take to remove the majority zambians from abject poverty ?, when the nation’s wealth is in the hands of the few under an auto piloted sequence of criminal organisations ?. God bless mother Zambia .

No Possibility Of Kwacha, Kafubu By Elections – Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha

0

NO POSSIBILITY OF KWACHA, KAFUBU BY ELECTIONS – AG

Attorney General MULILO KABESHA has ruled out the possibility of by-elections in KABUSHI and KWACHA constituencies following the recent Constitutional Court’s majority Judgement that the nullification of election results does not entail disqualification of the person whose seat was nullified.

Mr. KABESHA says the Judgement has been overtaken by events as the by-elections in the two Constituencies already took place in October last year.

The Attorney General has stated that the Petition of BOWMAN LUSAMBO Of KABUSHI Constituency and JOSEPH MALANJI of Kwacha constituency against the said elections was already dismissed by the High Court and now awaits the judgment of the Constitutional Court on appeal.

He says the by-elections took place on the strength of article 52 sub-articles four of the Constitution that required Mr. LUSAMBO and Mr. MALANJI of the PF to conclude their petitions to recontest within 21 days.

Mr. KABESHA says the requirements to conclude the petition in the High Court within 21 days as stipulated by 52 sub-article four was affirmed in the Case of BERNARD KANENGO versus the Attorney General and Electoral Commission of Zambia.

He says Mr. KANENGO of the UPND who is the incumbent KABUSHI Member of Parliament consolidated his case by referring to the precedence of HAKAINDE HICHILEMA verses the Attorney of 2016 where the Presidential Petition could not be stretched beyond 14 days.

He adds that the comprehensive majority and minority judgments delivered by the Constitutional Court on March,10,2023 are not a new version of the abridged judgments of September 7,2022 on Mr. LUSAMBO and Mr. MALANJI’s case.

This is according to a statement released in LUSAKA by the Attorney’s Office.

This is in a matter where Mr. LUSAMBO and Mr. MALANJI challenged the decision of the Electoral Commission of Zambia to reject their nomination papers for the October 2022-KABUSHI and KWACHA parliament by-elections.

The majority Judgement underlined that those whose election results have been nullified as was the case with Mr.LUSAMBO and Mr.MALANJI cannot be disqualified from re-contesting an election on the basis of article 72 sub-article four of the Constitution.

The majority Judgement was delivered by Judges PALAN MULONDA,MUGENI MULENGA,MATHEW CHISUNKA and JUDY MULONGOTI.

On the other hand in the dissent judgement Deputy President Constitutional Court President MARGARET MUNALULA has held that individuals whose election results have been nullified cannot recontest the by-elections.

Judge MUNALULA held that the case of Law Association of ZAMBIA verse Attorney General that states that nullification is not disqualification does not under undermine article 72 sub-article four of the Constitution.

She stated that her interpretation of article 72 sub-article two and article 72 sub-article four is that an individual who causes a vacancy in the National Assembly is not eligible to recontest the bye-elections.

Edgar Lungu can win an election – Bowman Lusambo

Lungu can win an election – Bowman

By Kombe Chimpinde Mataka

THE way President Hichilema won elections in this country that is the way Edgar Lungu can win an election in this country, says former Lusaka Province minister Bowman Lusambo.

He told The Mast that Lungu just lost an election once.
“No one has killed anyone. I was just giving an example to [UPND youth chairman Gilbert] Liswaniso yesterday. I told Liswaniso that if you are saying that President Lungu killed those people the President mentioned, who killed [North Western Province PF chairman Jackson] Kungo? Who attacked the Ndola PF youths in Ndola? Who attacked the Kitwe youths? Who denied entry to the youths of Kasama, entry to the stadium where Youth Day celebrations were being held? If you are telling me that Edgar Lungu did this, you are also telling me that President Hakainde Hichilema being the Republican President killed Kungo. Is he the one who attacked youths in Kitwe? Is he the one who prevented youths from entering the stadium? The answer is no. The police tear-gassed youths in Ndola, can we say it was President? The answer is no,” he said. “So they want to portray things in the wrong way. President Edgar Lungu is a free man. The way President Hichilema won elections in this country, that is the way Edgar Lungu can win an election in this country. Moreover he has just lost once. Ni kamo fye. It is just once. President Hakainde has been losing I don’t know if is not five times of six times. Lungu just failed once. And even at the university, when you fail once they give deferred exams. They look at the extent to which you have failed and they will say ‘this one is intelligent maybe he just never studied comprehensively. Let us give him a deferred exam so that he can obtain a certificate’. They give deferred exams even at the University of Zambia. They only ask you to repeat if you fail in everything. So president Lungu just dropped with a few marks. So his exam was deferred. So he can write the paper again and pass.”

Lusambo said whether or not Lungu should contest elections again it was not about the President’s wish.
“It is not about Liswaniso. It is snot about Madam (Vice-Presisdent Mutale) Nalumango. It is about the people of Zambia. The people of Zambia are saying we are tired na Bashi Promise (father of promises). Everything is promise, promise, promise. Zambians are saying they want bashi progress (the man of progress),” he said figuratively. “It’s not up to Bashi Promise and family to say bashi (father of progress) cannot come back. It is not them who vote. It is the people of Zambia.”

Lusambo said people were worried about the high cost of mealie meal, fuel and farming inputs.
“Bashi progress was not moving in the manner bashi promise is moving. The UPND have no moral right to talk about PF. The responsibility which they have been given by the people of Zambia is to govern this country and get the economy running by bringing the cost of fuel and food down and making money available to the people,” he said.

Lusambo said President HIchilema should apologise to Lungu for using strong words against him.
“He should apologise to Lungu because Lungu is older. What he is teaching us now is something else,” he said. “The President recently came from parliament where he talked about values, principles and ethics and morals. So what is he telling us?”
Lusambo called on chiefs to counsel the President.

“A child is never too big for his parents. Whether you are a president or not you are a son to somebody. Let the President concentrate on governing the country. Publicly or secretly the President should apologise to Lungu. He is going to apologise on the basis of Ubuntu. He is an elder. We have two groups which can sit the President down. The church SDA and the chiefs. We have to think about the bigger picture,” said Lusambo. “Zambia is bigger than all of us. Dr Kaunda ruled this country, he died and left it. Has Zambia died? No. [Frederick] Chiluba ruled this country he died. Did Zambia die? No. [Levy] Mwanawasa ruled the country, he died. Did Zambia die? President [Michael] Sata ruled for few years and died. Did the country die? No. Politicians come and go. Besides in Zambia the mandate for governing is five years. If they are happy that is when they give two terms but if they are not happy it’s one term. The UPND know Zambians. RB just ruled for three years. They know how Zambians are. The best example is RB. No one can force themselves to be President if Zambians have spoken.”
On Monday, during a card renewal exercise in Kitwe, President Hichilema said he would not have been alive had it not been for some party members who died in his place.

“They killed children. Lawrence Banda, putting a bullet in his head,” he said. “Joseph Kaunda, that bullet was meant for me, and Joseph Kaunda took that bullet for me. What do you think I think about that situation? When he says alebwelelapo what does he think I am? What does he think you are? What does he think the children of Joseph Kaunda are? Lawrence Banda, Mapenzi Chibulo, Grazier Matapa. What does he think about those women who were thrown in a cell together with me? Bushe aletontonkanya olo ninshi (are you thinking properly or what is it?” President Hichilema wondered.

He said God gave him a big chest but that should not be misunderstood.
President Hichilema said God wanted him to correct the wrongs of his predecessor.
“We must not misunderstand each other in this country. We must not abuse each other in this country,” he said. “How can one aspire to come back to come and start killing more young people? I am protecting young people, someone wants to come back and start killing the people he did not kill that time. Kwangala uko, kutumpa uko (Those are games. That’s being silly).”
President Hichilema urged Zambians not to be misled.

He said people were brought up differently and that his style of leadership was different from that of others.
“Some talk a lot, tick tock. All the time, talk talk. Those who are quiet do not mean they agree with noise being made. I am not supposed to be alive myself. I should have died a long time ago. But God protected us. But in a way a part of me died. We came for the Youth Day, you started fighting. Kutumpa uko (that’s being silly),” said President Hichilema. “If I allowed these guys to avenge after 2021 elections people would have died in this country.”

Nakonde man proven innocent after spending 13 years in prison

Chisanga Kalale says he was 15 years old when he was sentenced to 48 years’ imprisonment alongside his friend in 2010.

This was after they were found guilty of harbouring prohibited immigrants among other charges.

He claims he was recently found innocent following a judicial review.

“I was released on 10th March 2023 from Isoka Correctional Facility where I was transferred a few months ago from Mukobeko Maximum Correctional where I spent more years,” he told Chete FM News.

Chete FM News has not independently verified this case although Mr Kalale produced a stamped discharge note from Isoka Correctional Facility.

The 28-year-old says he was arrested when he went to visit his friend who was harbouring immigrants without his knowledge.

On the day the authorities carried out an operation, he was picked up together with the friend that he says was betrayed by others who did not receive money from the deal.

“One the day I was released, I didn’t look back because prison is not a place you would wish to live. I remember how we used to go to the farms in the morning until sunset.”

“There were times when I got sick and times when we would be beaten. It’s not a place to miss. I just thank God that I’m out of slavery.”

“It’s not a good place. Even cows sleep better than I used to sleep,” he says.

Despite the bad description of prison life, he says he has learnt some survival skills.

“Teachers used to come to teach us business and agriculture.”

He has spent the last few nights at the clinic and in the cold looking for his widowed mother, Agness Chibuye.

“I was found with malaria when I came to Nakonde. Unfortunately, on the way to the clinic I was involved in a motorbike accident that has left an injury on the left side of my eye.”

He says his grandmother from Mwinilunga district was the last known relative he met several years ago when his father died in a road accident in 2001.

THE COUNTRY IS GOING NOWWHERE SLOWLY-MUNDUBILE

0

THE COUNTRY IS GOING NOWWHERE SLOWLY-MUNDUBILE.

Lusaka… Friday, 17 March 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Brian Mundubile has charged that the country is in a state of entropy, a disorderly manner in which things occur in order.

Hon Mundubile said under the watch of the current Government, Zambia is going nowhere slowly.

He wondered how one can explain the behaviour by the President on the Copperbelt in which he failed to deliver impactful message to the youths and opted to use unpalatable Language ‘UKUTUMPA’ against his predecessor.

He said this is an indication that the UPND is out of ideas and therefore needs help from various stakeholders through an Indaba to bring the country back on track.

‘‘How can you explain a situation on Youth Day where a President appears to the Youths who are waiting for something inspirational. All they hear is Kutumpa derogatory remark. Using unpalatable language because we are in a state of entropy,’’ he said.

And Hon Mundubile the Political violence occurring is because the true size of the UPND has been exposed.

He said the UPND is now having to come to terms with the truth that they are in power, yet they are a very small party.

He says this has been demonstrated by the numbers, on Independence, Women and youth day celebrations where the ruling party was outnumbered.

Hon Mundubile has therefore challenged the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security to put his act together and ensure to end cadrerism.

‘‘Police was beaten at Kasama Police, we have all these examples. In Kitwe, the people beaten are the ones who were arrested and not the violent cadres……… We are dealing with a party that is full of cadrerism and violence. The only reason the UPND are being seen as Violent is because we have told our people not to fight back. If our people were fighting back, the police would have been arresting them and not the instigators of violence the UPND,’’ he said.

Official Commissioning Of The Tazama Pipeline As A Transporter Of Finished Products Pipeline To Take Place On Monday The 20th Of March 2023

OFFICIAL COMMISSIONING OF THE TAZAMA PIPELINE AS A TRANSPORTER OF FINISHED PRODUCTS PIPELINE TO TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY THE 20TH OF MARCH 2023

The official commissioning of the conversion of TAZAMA Pipeline from a transporter of crude oil into a finished products Pipeline to take place on Monday the 20th of March 2023.

This is 65 days ahead of schedule as this process was expected to happen first week of June 2023.

The conversion of the TAZAMA pipeline from a crude oil carrier into a finished products pipeline will not only reduce the cost of transportation of fuel by 60% but also with the following benefits among others:

1 INDENI REFINERY will now be able to blend diesel with ethanol which is produced from local sugar cane, maize and cassava hence not only reducing the price of petrol and diesel but also creating a better price for industrial cassava for our peasant farmers.

2 The uplifting of fuel from Ndola will create jobs for Zambian fuel tanker drivers who haven’t been able to load fuel from Dareslam due to the resistance they have been encountering when ever they tried to load fuel from Dareslam.

3 Opportunity to export fuel to Congo as it will be cheaper for fuel importers in Congo to load fuel in Ndola instead of Dareslam.

4 Export of blended fuel with ethanol produced from local cassava by INDENI into Congo which will improve the flow of dollars into our economy.

Once our Debt restructuring program is completed next month and the kwacha starts to gain, we shall see a systematic reduction of diesel in Zambia month by month from May onwards.

Allow me to thank President Hakainde Hichilema, the Minister of Energy and his team for thier methodical approach in handling issues of national Importance which will soon be bearing fruits to the people of Zambia in General and kankoyo in particular.

GOVT ALLOWS 1,665 LEGAL FISHERMEN INTO ITEZHI TEZHI PROTECTED WATERS

….the fishing and park regulations need to be adhered to

Lusaka, Saturday, March 17, 2023

Government has said a maximum of 1,665 legal fishermen be allowed fishing permits to fish on the Kafue National Park side of Lake Itezhi Tezhi.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting to respond to grievances of fishing restrictions in the Kafue National Park, attended by Itezhi Tezhi Member of Parliament Twambo Mutinta, Council Chairperson Oliver Sitengu, District Commissioner Tobias Namatemba and Fisheries Officer Patrick Mwiya, Tourism Permanent Secretary Evans Muhanga expressed happiness that the parties agreed on how fishing would be done sustainably, through enforcement of the law, benefiting both communities and tourism development initiatives.

He said the fishing and park regulations need to be adhered to in the quest to manage the resource and that things are looking brighter with the involvement of the Member of Parliament and council leadership.

Mr. Muhanga emphasized the need for continued stakeholder engagements to ensure that all interested parties including traditional leadership are brought to the table when decisions are made on the available resources to have a mutual position.

And Hon. Mutinta said there is need to carry out adequate sensitization of the communities around the lake for them to appreciate the conservation initiatives that have been introduced in the area.

He said that this is important considering that so far very few people understand the benefits of the conservation agenda and most of them may not be in a position to understand and appreciate why certain decisions are made.

Meanwhile African Parks, Kafue National Park Manager Craig Reid expressed concern that illegal fishing activities are being practiced across the lake, disrupting conservation efforts and tourism which are vital for the development of the local economy, which is desperately needed. Regulation and management is required to ensure sustained benefits for communities without degrading the basic resources.

The meeting concluded amongst the key rules and regulations that must be followed that;
Fishing must be done by those with legal permits from the Department of Fisheries.

No fishing within 500 meters of tourism camps and not in defined breeding areas.

No fishing camps allowed near tourism enterprise establishments and must only be on designated areas on the mainland and specific areas allowed in the national park.

All vessels must registered and tagged.
Only permitted fishermen in the Park waters and must be identifiable.

All fishermen must follow the prescribed rules and guidelines in line with sustainable fishing regulations.

Xi Jinping  to hold talks with Putin in Russia in ‘visit for peace’

0

China and Russia announced a visit to Moscow by President Xi Jinping next week. Beijing, a longtime Moscow ally, seeks a peace mediator role over the war in Ukraine.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to Russia next week, Beijing and Moscow said on Friday.

The Kremlin said the three-day trip will take place “at the invitation” of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The announcement came on the same day that the International Criminal Court at The Hague issued a rare arrest warrant for Putin for alleged war crimes over the Ukraine conflict.

The West is suspicious of China’sChina’s close relations with Russiaand Beijing’s vow to stay neutral in the nearly 13-month-old conflict.

What is on the agenda?
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin and Xi would have a one-to-one meeting over an informal dinner Monday. On Tuesday, officials from both countries are set to take part in broader talks.

“During the talks, they will discuss topical issues of further development of comprehensive partnership relations and strategic cooperation between Russia and China,” the Kremlin said. “A number of important bilateral documents will be signed,” it added.

Putin wants closer military ties with China

China’s Foreign Ministry described Xi’s trip as “a visit for peace” that aimed to “practice true multilateralism… improve global governance and make contributions to the development and progress of the world.”

“At present, changes not seen in a century are rapidly evolving, and the world has entered a new period of turmoil,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference.

“China will uphold its objective and fair position on the Ukrainian crisis and play a constructive role in promoting peace talks.”

Beijing’s peace efforts
China has previously offered to broker peace in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But Beijing’s refusal to condemn Russia’s war has prompted the West to react to its mediation efforts with skepticism.

Top-ranking US officials have even accused China of supplying Russia with arms for its ongoing war in Ukraine. China has denied these claims.

On Friday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US would oppose any effort by China at the meeting to propose a cease-fire in Ukraine as the “ratification of Russian conquest.”

“We also hope that President Xi will reach out to President Zelenskyy directly, as we continue to believe that it’s very important that he hears from the Ukrainian side as well and not just from Mr. Putin,” Kirby added.

Kyiv attempts to boost Beijing ties
Kyiv has sought to strengthen its relations with Beijing and on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Zelenskyy urged China to take part in a summit to discuss Kyiv’s so-called peace formula.

Ukraine has repeatedly said that any plan to end the war must involve the full withdrawal of Russian troops to Ukraine’s borders in 1991, the year the Soviet Union was dissolved.

China’s top diplomat Qin Gang held a rare phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, on Thursday.

Qin told Kuleba that Beijing “always upheld an objective and fair stance on the Ukraine issue, has committed itself to promote peace and advancing negotiations and calls on the international community to create conditions for peace talks,” according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

Kuleba wrote on Twitter that he “underscored the importance of Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula for ending the aggression and restoring just peace in Ukraine.”

Chinese-Russian ‘no limit’ ties
In February 2022, Beijing and Moscow struck a “no limits” partnership when Putin was visiting China for the opening of the Winter Olympics — weeks before launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Since then, both countries have reaffirmed the strength of their ties.

In late December, Putin invited Xi to Russia over a conference video call to “demonstrate to the whole world the strength of the Russian-Chinese ties.” He further said that the visit could “become the main political event of the year in bilateral relations.”

Trade between the two countries has increased since the invasion last year. China is Russia’s biggest buyer of oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow at a time when the European Union and its allies have economically boycotted the Kremlin.

Pension reform protest in France turns violent again

0

In central Paris, protesters and police have once more exchanged blows over the French government’s proposed pension reforms.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the thousands of protesters who set fires and some of whom tossed firecrackers at them.

Since President Emmanuel Macron chose to enact the divisive measures to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a vote, there have been two nights of disturbance.

No-confidence motions have been filed against his government in response.

The first was signed by independents and members of the left-wing Nupes coalition in parliament, while a second came from the far-right National Rally party.

Both are expected to be debated early next week.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally MPs in parliament, called the decision to push through the pension changes “a total failure for the government”.

Police made dozens of arrests during the unrest at Place de la Concorde, not far from the parliament building.

Protests also took place on Friday in other French cities – notably Bordeaux, Toulon and Strasbourg.

“We won’t give up,” one demonstrator told AFP news agency. “There’s still hope that the reform can be revoked.”

Another told Reuters that pushing the legislation through without a vote was “a denial of democracy… a total denial of what has been happening in the streets for several weeks”.

The government has said the changes to pensions are essential to ensure the system is not overburdened and prevent it collapsing.

But many people, including union members, disagree and France has now seen more than two months of heated political debate and strikes over the issue.

Transport, public services and schools have all been affected, while a rolling walkout by waste collectors has seen thousands of tonnes of rubbish left on the streets of the capital.

Fuel deliveries have also been blocked and there are plans to stop production at a large refinery in Normandy in the coming days.

“Changing the government or prime minister will not put out this fire, only withdrawing the reform,” said the head of the moderate CFDT union, Laurent Berger.

I’M NOT A SMALL BOY TO BE PUSHED AROUND, CHARGES UPND’S CHIKOTA

I’M NOT A SMALL BOY TO BE PUSHED AROUND, CHARGES UPND’S CHIKOTA … I’ll have my day to speak with the public

By Patson Chilemba

I have got my day to speak to the public, I am not a small boy to be pushed around, says Mwense council chairman and UPND deputy national youth chairperson Stephen Chikota.

Chikote who was recently detained in police custody over the sugilite scam, where he also unleashed tribal venon together with his co-accused saying those who were accused from Southern and Western province were released while failing to arrest the commissioner of police and Luapula Province minister Derrick Chilundika for allegedly being involved in the sugilite scam.

Vice-President Mutale Nalumango indicated that some disciplinary measures will be taken by the party over the tribal remarks by Chikota, when responding to Pambashe member of parliament Ronald Chitotela.

But Chikota said journalists must be focused on the issue which sent him into police custody and should not allow attention to be diverted from the Sugilite issue.

“The bottom line is even you journalists can you up your game. Can you be real journalists. The issue which was addressed in parliament it has become a big issue. There is the bigger issue of sugilite. Can you dig deeper? Let’s not divert the attention … you want to divert my attention to a two seconds video clip. You are forgetting about the whole issue,” Chikota said to Daily Revelation. “Ask me questions to do with sugilite … was I arrested because of my tribal remarks? What you should have asked me was you brought these allegations, are they true or not about the people involved.”

Chikota continued: “You know, people should not get offended about what is trending on social media. I have got my day to speak to the public. I am not a small boy to be pushed around.”

He said whatever he uttered “he owned those words and should not be pushed to comment on what is happening on social media.”

On the Vice-President’s remarks in parliament today, Chikota said he would not object to what the Vice-President said.

“I am not trying to say I don’t regret neither am I saying I have regretted. Unfortunately it’s an organisation that has got procedures just as she indicated in parliament. And myself and the people must respect whatever the party will decide,” he said.

He demanded that people must be investigated before being arrested.

Chikota further dismissed Edith Nawakwi’s attacks on him that weak men always bring in the tribe to run away from wrongdoing, saying she is a failed politician.

“Let her go and mourn the husband,” said Chikota

WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING TO THE KWACHA?- Fred M’membe

WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING TO THE KWACHA?

The appreciation or strengthening of the Kwacha was the Alleluia – glory – of Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government.

Now that the Kwacha appears to be in free fall what’s their new song. How do they explain it?

Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, Minister of Finance, says the Kwacha is depreciating due to the country’s delayed debt restructuring.

There’s definitely some truth in this. But it cannot be the sole reason for the Kwacha’s free fall. There are definitely many other factors that are causing the Kwacha to depreciate.

Zambia’s debt is not new, it hasn’t just arisen. The Kwacha was, for some time, appreciating on the back of this national debt burden. It even went as low as K15.89 to the US Dollar under this government. But it is reaching K20.70 to the US Dollar under the same government.

The truth is, there are interest rate increments in the countries where the money, which was being invested in Zambian government securities, was coming from. This is causing a flight back. Money is leaving Zambia and being taken to where interest rates are rising and risks are much lower.

The changes in copper prices also cannot be ignored. A drop in copper prices means less US dollars collected by the government in all sorts of taxes. Oil prices have been rising. This means more US dollars are required to bring in our fuel requirements, putting more pressure on the US Dollar supply and further depreciating the Kwacha.

Also, this situation is not being helped by the fact that the investment pledges Mr Hichilema has been talking about have not come in. For instance, Dubai US$2 billion solar energy investment is still not in. FQM’s US$1.2 billion Kansanshi investment pledge is being awaited. And when it comes in it will be spent elsewhere to buy mining equipment and other supplies. Very little of it will be spent in Zambia to have an impact on the Kwacha.

The impact of electricity load shedding on the Kwacha also cannot be ignored. Clearly, the depreciation of the Kwacha cannot be solely attributed to the delay in restructuring Zambia’s debt.

If Dr Musokotwane were right, then what would happen to the Kwacha if this debt restructuring totally failed? What other options are there for Zambia under Mr Hichilema’s UPND government rule?

Attorney General Sued, Appointment Of Judges Illegal As They Didnt Meet Requisite Qualifications And Training

APPOINTMENT OF JUDGES CHALLENGED IN COURT

Lusaka, Friday, March 17, 2023

Two citizens have challenged the process of recommending and appointing Judges of the Superior Courts by the Judicial Service Commission and the President for lacking in transparency and failing to accord adequate opportunities to all suitably qualified legal practitioners as required by the Constitution.

Governance Activist Isaac Mwanza and Maurice Makalu stated in their petition that the Constitution and the law provide for recommendation for appointment and promotion of Judges on the basis of merit, adequate and equal opportunities for all suitably-qualified persons, conducted in accordance with a system that is fair, transparent, and competitive selection in filling of vacancies.

“There is no known record of any recommendation that may have been made by the Judicial Service Commission on the appointments that were made nor the criteria that was used to arrive at the said names,” reads the petition.

The duo have also stated that no record exist that any advertisements was made by the Commission in respect of vacancies for positions of President of the Constitutional Court, Deputy President of the Constitutional Court, President of the Court of Appeal and Judges of the superior courts, or any record to indicate the criteria applied for recommending of the individuals selected for appointments by the President.

“There is no known record that the Judicial Service Commission offered all suitably-qualified legal practitioners an opportunity to be interviewed and assessed for possible recommendation and appointment by the President,” reads the petition

The petitioners are seeking the Court to declare that appointments of Judges must done on merit and using a transparent procedure that affords adequate opportunities for suitably qualified legal practitioners to apply and be assessed before being recommended to the President for appointment.

They have asked the Court to quash all appointments made by the President on 14th February, 2023, due to the flawed selection process that does not adhere to constitutional provisions of transparency, merit and provision of adequate opportunities in appointments and promotions.

The petitioners have also applied for an interim Injunction to preserve the status quo on the number of Judges in the superior courts until the final determination of the main matter.

SDA Church Distances Itself From The Kelvin Kaunda Apology To Edgar Lungu Over HH’s ‘Kutumpa uko’ Remarks

PRESS RELEASE

THE SDA CHURCH DISTANCES ITSELF FROM THE KELVIN KAUNDA APOLOGY TO ECL

March 17th, 2023

LUSAKA – We wish to reiterate that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is apolitical and avoids aligning itself with political organizations.
We have always ensured that our engagement with political leaders when necessary is constructive as well as privately conducted to avoid being misunderstood and misleading our church members as we are alive to the fact that they belong to different political parties of their choice.

Following the statement attributed to Mr. Kelvin Kaunda in which he was quoted as apologizing to former President Edgar Lungu on behalf of all our Church elders as regards some remarks that were made by the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema in Kitwe; we wish to state the following:
1. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zambia is guided in its operations and management by among other documents the Working Policy, Church Manuel. In this particular matter, we are also guided by The Communication Policy for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Zambia. These documents set the tone for our organisation’s culture; communicates expectations to employees and church members and guide the day-to-day operations.

2. The Communication Policy for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Zambia on Page 7 guides as follows:
8.0 EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION
8.1 GENERAL POLICY STATEMENT
8.1.1 The Church shall provide clear and relevant information to the general public on matters that affect its relationship, perception and its standing in society. In doing so, the Church shall endeavor to use different means of communicating to the public at its disposal.
8.1.2 External communication shall only be done by officially designated staff and this shall be done in a professional manner.
8.2 NATIONAL OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED COMMUNICATIONAUTHORITIES
8.2.1 The Union Presidents are the chief spokespersons of the Church in their respective Unions. For joint union matters, however, the two Unions shall appoint/designate an official Spokesperson who shall communicate with Media, Government authorities and the public. The Spokesperson shall hold office for a period until a subsequent quinquennial session. In discharging his functions, the designated spokesperson shall liaise with the officers of the two Unions for purposes of consensus. In the absence of consensus on a particular matter, the EXCOMs or ADCOMs of both Unions shall take a vote to come up with a position on the matter.

3. Having quoted the above authority, we wish to state that Mr. Kaunda who is an elder in our Church has no authority to speak on behalf of the Seventh day Adventist Church in Zambia in part or its entirety. We also do not have one who speaks on behalf of a section or all the elders in our Church in Zambia.

4. Therefore, he was speaking and representing his own views and political interests which have nothing to do with the Church. We do acknowledge that he has like any other Zambian citizen a Constitutional right to belong to any political association of his choice but that does not grant him authority to speak on behalf of the Church.

5. We therefore, wish to inform our members and the general public to ignore the statement attributed to Mr. Kaunda as it does not represent the position of the Church but his own political views which is his personal inherently deserved privilege. We would like to appeal to Mr. Kaunda to avoid involving the Church in his politics in future as doing so may have far reaching consequences in maintaining Church unity.

6. Further, we would like to request the media institutions that covered Mr. Kaunda’s story to ensure they apply themselves to best ethical journalism practices that enjoins journalists to seek the truth and report it objectively. This includes fact-checking, not intentionally distorting information, identifying authentic sources, avoiding stereotypes, supporting the open exchange of opinions and balanced reporting.
