Fuel Prices May Go Up Next Month, Warns Energy Minister

FUEL PRICES MAY GO UP NEXT MONTH, WARNS ENERGY MINISTER

Lusaka ~ Mon, 9 May 2022

By Brightwell Chabusha

Government officials have continued issuing contradictory statements over the issue of fuel prices.

Following sentiments by Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises that the New Dawn Administration will not increase fuel prices anymore, Minister of Energy Peter Kapala yesterday said his counterpart should be corrected.

Mr Kapala warned when he featured on ZNBC’s “Sunday Interview” that depending on circumstances, petroleum prices may go up next month.

He said government has indicated on different platforms that it is getting rid of the subsidies on the commodity.

The Minister said fuel is currently still being subsidies as the New Dawn Administration has not removed the import duty on the commodity yet.

“You have just said quoted, I don’t know I haven’t received a report to that effect. If it is true, then it needs to be corrected. The truth of the matter is we react to the international trend, that is all. So if there is a prediction that the prices of petroleum will come down, I will be the happiest Minister of Energy to announce the further decrease,” he said.

Commenting on the complaints members of the public have repeatedly had on the monthly reviews, the Minister said even South Africa and Kenya are doing the same and it is working for them adding that it has to work for Zambians too.

Members of the public have been lamenting that the monthly reviews affect their planning in different businesses.

And Mr Kapala said he could hope that the fuel prices will reduce further.

“I can hope that the fuel prices reduce further. Because right now we are in a process of removing the comingled crude in the TAZAMA pipeline. It will be done maybe in the next month or so, so that we can use the cheaper means of transporting from Dar es Salaam by Pipeline into Ndola, mainly, low Sulphur diesel. Petrol will however still come through the road. So there could be some further reduction in the price of diesel,” he said.

A heartwarming note written by a husband to his wife after she left their home after a quarrel went viral
A note written by a husband to his wife after she left their home after a quarrel went viral.

The husband and wife had been disputing for a long time, disagreeing over everything until it ultimately became a passionate argument.

The wife had had enough of the fighting and stormed out, slamming the door shut behind her.

She didn’t return home the remainder of the night or the next day, and she didn’t answer to her husband’s texts or phone calls.

During this time, the husband understood just how reliant he was on his wife.

Their children would never be cared for without her, and he and his family would be hungry.

He decided to sit down and write her a letter, telling her how important she was to him.

“My darling,” the letter began, “Two nights ago, we had a huge argument. I was exhausted when I got home from work. It was 8:00pm and all I wanted to do was to lie down and watch the game. I said, ‘I work hard all day just so you could play in the doll’s house all day.’ The argument kept going like that. I said terrible things to you that I can never take back… You tearfully ran out of the house, leaving me to take care of the children on my own.”

He added: “I experienced the crying and the tantrums. I experienced having to run around so much all day that I didn’t even have a chance to shower. I experienced feeling so physically and emotionally drained that I just wanted to sleep for 20 hours straight. I get your exhaustion. I get that being a mother is all about sacrifice. I get how challenging it is, being locked up and being forced to watch children. I write you this letter not just to tell you that you are missed, but because I don’t want to go another day without telling you: ‘You are strong, doing an excellent job, and I admire you.’”

The letter quickly went viral, with many applauding the husband’s realization and his desire to recognize the work his wife does.

Nigerian 2023 Presidency: Why the Number So Alarming?

Nigeria: More Candidates Emerge As The Battle for 2023 Presidency Hits Up
By Damilare Adeleye

The growing number of presidential aspirants ahead of the forthcoming general elections may easily intrigue the appetite to know if Nigerian politicians are genuinely making call to serve and save the country from the current shambles. Despite the humongous one hundred million naira for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) nomination forms, aspirants which have officially declared are more than seventeen. Similarly, the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has at least seventeen aspirants who have purchased the party’s N50 million presidential forms to jostle for the presidential ticket of the party. Undoubtedly, these patriotic individuals have unchallenging right to run for any positions in the country inasmuch as the prerequisites, as contained in the constitution are met, and have the resources to run the electioneering. However, the rising number is suspiciously raising some awareness among the Nigerian people.

When asked, one of the presidential hopefuls, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, told journalists at the State House, Abuja on Tuesday that the higher number the more the merrier. Besides, our democratic disposition allows every eligible citizen to contest any positions in the country, and there is no restriction of number to that constitutional provision. Politics is a playing field for anyone interested in the game, but Nigeria itself is not a game.

According to the recent report from the World Poverty Clock (WPC), Nigerian was ranked as the second world poverty capital with over seventy million people living in extreme poverty. Similarly, data from global sources pegged the rate of unemployment in Nigeria at 33.3 per cent of the overall population with many who are youths. And, over the last decade, the incessant security challenges have become unabated, and the economy has persisted on fluctuation. These are daunting challenges which these aspirants should take cognizant look before their quest to become the next president of the country. As a matter of concern, radical steps and pragmatic solutions should be proffered to these challenges during their various declarations.

Though, while many among the magnitude of these presidential hopefuls have established to consolidate on the achievement and foundation which the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari has attained, and others from the opposition party have unequivocally stated to reinstate the glory of the country lost in the hands of the ruling party. It is now imperative for the average Nigerian populace to take critical scrutiny on these aspirants in their number, to ensure the emergence of competent and capable leader. Their plethora of unending promises are not enough, their body language towards national issues, past records in governance and leadership position, cultural and religious morality, and educational background, among others should also be the parameters to scrutinize these aspiring individuals, and even when some become candidates.

As this moment, Nigeria truly needs a radical and transformational leader who is ready to confront the nation’s problems without bias or prejudice to any group or individual. We are in urge for someone who will critically take the bull by the horns against non-state actors who are wreaking havoc on the lives of innocent citizens on a daily basis. We are in demand for the right person who will well-manage our economy, socio-cultural and political diversities; and not the cohort of those who will only fend on our public treasury, lavish with our common wealth, leaving the masses to languish in the state of penury.

It is sad that at the time when the political space is tense as everyone is busy towards the 2023 general elections, our public universities are shut, and average Nigerian students are on the streets protesting against the strike action of academic universities unions (ASUU, SSANU and NASU). This should be a frontline concern for the presidential contenders. Unfortunately, those primarily saddled with responsibilities of managing the affairs of our education sector are among the increasing number of presidential optimists.

To end, the back-to-back declaration for presidency by politicians is, certainly, making the race interesting for mass participation. Nevertheless, the mantle of presidency is not a mere office for retirement. It is a sensitive office with the most tedious duties and responsibilities whose effectiveness count on our national lives. Therefore, it is crucial for we, the electorate, to remain vigilant on the politicians during this period to avoid being sidelined again after the elections!

KwaZulu-Natal floods: The South African family who lost nine children

South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province is still reeling from the country’s worst floods in 60 years, which killed about 435 people last month. Mass funerals are taking place, although many families are still unable to bury their loved ones because their bodies were swept away by the raging torrents, as the BBC Pumza Fihlani reports.

Inside a white tent on a hillside just outside Pietermaritzburg, hundreds of people sit with their heads bowed before six coffins. A sombre church hymn pierces through the heavy silence.

The unimaginable happened to the Mdlalose family. Slindile Mdalose, 43, and nine children aged between two and 10 years were killed in the floods that devastated KwaZulu-Natal in the most deadly natural disaster in the country’s history.

They were sleeping when the violent water washed through, flattening their home. It has been three weeks and some of the bodies are yet to be recovered

“To tell you the truth we are mad, we are numb. We can’t use our heads. This is too much to even comprehend,” the children’s uncle, Thokozani Mdlalose tells the BBC.

He is wearing tinted glasses to conceal his pain but his cracking voice and quivering lip betray his struggle to keep his composure.

“When you have to split your grief, you think of this one, you think of that [one]. It’s too much. It’s hard losing one person. It’s worse losing two. Ten is something else,” he says.

The mass funeral of Slindile Mdalose and her five children – Uyanda, Lubanzi, Ziyanda, Asanele, Lulama – took place on a cool morning. She was also the aunt of four more children, who are still missing.

“Knowing that we haven’t found them, that they might be decomposing somewhere out there – words can’t describe what is inside me right now. I can’t even gather my thoughts,” Mr Mdlalose says.

He adds that the nine children were playful and full of laughter, and brought joy to the whole family.

Their aunt, Nonkululeko Mdlalose, says when she last spoke to her sister on the phone just hours before they died, she could tell that her sister was afraid.

It was raining heavily, unlike anything either of them had ever seen before. Still, they did not expect that it would lead to disaster, Nonkululeko Mdlalose says.

“I’ve never felt this kind of pain. I thought I was a strong person but I realise that I’m not, that we will need help, I realise we will need counselling. This is too much for anyone to bear,” she adds.

They are not the only ones grieving. The floods killed 435 people, and dozens of victims are still missing, leaving their families in unbearable limbo.

Less than 200 have been buried so far, and at least 59 bodies remain unclaimed in mortuaries.

Icebolethu Funeral Services, one of the biggest funeral homes in KwaZulu-Natal, has so far buried more than 70 victims.

One of its managing executives, Mthokozisi Bhengu, says corpses are not in a good state because they had been submerged in water, and they need to be buried quickly to avoid their condition worsening.

“Families have cultural practices they would like to follow, like burying everyone in a family at the same time but we’ve had to persuade those whose loved ones are still missing that whilst they’re still searching for the others, let us continue and bury the ones in the morgues and preserve their dignity,” he adds.

In the case of unclaimed bodies, funeral parlours say, there is no consensus yet on what to do with them.

One option being considered by officials is to extract their DNA and store the information, so that family members, if they ever come looking for their loved ones, can be taken to their graves – something that will hopefully give them some closure.

The government and private donors have offered help to cover funeral costs but the claims process is said to be bureaucratic and slow, leading to further delays with burials.

The head of the South African Funeral Parlour Association, Nomfudo Mcoyi, says the delays could have been avoided.

“In future, the government should bring in industry experts from the beginning in a crisis. Let us tell you how best to do this,” she says.

Ms Mcoyi adds that the delays are causing more trauma and stress for families.

“We could have done it [the burials] easily without bodies decaying,” she says.

Back at the funeral on a hill, KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala said the government was working to help all those in need.

On rebuilding homes for families such as the Mdlaloses, he said the government was working on identifying suitable land to house new settlements for the displaced. Thousands of people have been left homeless and are living in shelters across the province.

“The task of rebuilding KwaZulu-Natal cannot be achieved by our caring government alone. It requires that we entrench the new spirit of solidarity and patriotism that we have seen in our province,” he told the crowd.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that more funds are needed than the initial $68m (£55m) set aside to rebuild KwaZulu-Natal and all that’s been lost.

It’s a long road ahead for many people here – from those who’ve lost family to those who lost their homes or livelihoods. As the true picture of the devastation caused by the floods emerges, many will need all the help they can get.- BBC News

Who is Alina Kabaeva, Putin’s alleged lover holed up in Switzerland?

0

Russia is already under unprecedented sanctions and now the EU could target Alina Kabaeva, a politician, media boss, former Olympic gymnast, and – if the rumours are true – Vladimir Putin’s girlfriend and mother to some of his children.

The sanctions imposed by the EU and others are designed to punish those closest to Mr Putin – the oligarchs, politicians and other officials said to have benefited from their proximity to the president.

Last month, the US and UK imposed sanctions on his daughters Maria Vorontsova, 36, and Katerina Tikhonova, 35. They are his children with ex-wife Lyudmila.

Until now, Ms Kabaeva has escaped, despite her reported status. She might have felt something was coming: an online petition in March demanded her expulsion from her residence in Switzerland.

Sources have confirmed to the BBC that she is on the latest list of individuals to be sanctioned by the EU. According to AFP, she will be targeted for her part in disseminating Kremlin propaganda and for being “closely associated” with the 69-year-old President Putin. The draft document does not name her as his partner, and the EU is yet to officially sign off on the proposal.

Russia’s leader has always been intensely private. When asked about his private life, he has tended to brush off the question.

He has, though, explicitly denied a relationship with Ms Kabaeva.

In 2008, the Moskovsky Korrespondent newspaper reported that he was planning to divorce his wife Lyudmila and marry Ms Kabaeva. Both rejected the story. Soon after, the authorities shut the newspaper down. Mr Putin and Lyudmila would announce their split five years later.

At the time the Russian president was denying he was involved with Ms Kabaeva, she was transitioning from a successful sporting career to one in politics.

Her chosen discipline was rhythmic gymnastics, where competitors perform routines with the aid of equipment like ribbons and balls.

Ms Kabaeva, at her peak, has claims to have been the best in the world. She had a move named after her and was a leading performer in the team that dominated the sport. Russia won every Olympic gold medal available from 2000-2016.

Born in 1983, she started rhythmic gymnastics as a four-year-old. Her coach, Irina Viner, said: “I could not believe my eyes, when I first saw her. The girl has the rare combination of two qualities crucial in rhythmic gymnastics – flexibility and agility.”

Ms Kabaeva would become known as “Russia’s most flexible woman”.

She made her international debut in 1996, and was a surprise winner at the 1998 European Championships.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, an uncharacteristic error with the hoop cost her dearly (she let it roll off the floor) and she could only manage bronze in the all-round event. Four years later, in Athens, she went better, taking home gold.

By the time of her retirement, she had won 18 World Championship medals and 25 European Championship medals on top of her Olympic prizes. Like other Russian athletes, she has not escaped the taint of doping, losing her medals at an event in 2001 after testing positive for a banned substance.

Putin-and-Kabaeva
There’s a photo of the pair as far back as in 2001, when Mr Putin awarded her an Order of Friendship – a top state honour. (Picture via AFP)

She moved into politics, holding a seat in Russia’s lower house of parliament from 2007-2014 with the ruling United Russia party.

In 2014 she became chair of the National Media Group, which has large stakes in almost all major Russian state media outlets.

Such outlets have been pumping out a relentlessly pro-Kremlin message on the war in Ukraine, accusing Ukrainians of shelling their own cities and presenting Russian troops as liberators.

Her position has reportedly made her a wealthy woman, with leaked documents suggesting she earns about $12m (£9.7m) a year.

It is not known when she and Mr Putin first met, but it is not unusual for a leading Olympian to meet a country’s president. There’s a photo of the pair as far back as in 2001, when Mr Putin awarded her an Order of Friendship – a top state honour.

There are rumours that they have children together, although reports vary on how many.

A Swiss newspaper reported that Ms Kabaeva had a boy in 2015 at an exclusive clinic near Lake Lugano, and another boy at the same place in 2019. But The Sunday Times and Wall Street Journal said she had twins in 2019 in Moscow although they disagree on how many children she has had.

The Kremlin denies such reports. Back in 2015, Mr Putin’s spokesman said “information about the birth of a baby fathered by Vladimir Putin does not correspond to reality”.

Such is Mr Putin’s guarded nature – in public, he’s never mentioned the names of the children he has with Lyudmila, other than to say he has two adult daughters – that the speculation is likely to continue.

Ms Kabaeva has been in and out of the spotlight since reports of her relationship with Mr Putin emerged.

There was a Vogue cover in 2011, where she wore a pricey gold dress from French fashion house Balmain. She was also a torch bearer at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

More recently, in April she appeared at a junior gymnastics festival in Moscow, quashing suggestions she was in hiding. There, she praised Russia’s war effort. Some outlets noted she wore a wedding band.

Since the Ukraine war began, there have been calls for her to face sanctions.

The Wall Street Journal has suggested that the US is reluctant to sanction Ms Kabaeva, for fear it may be deemed “so personal a blow” to Mr Putin that it may escalate tensions further.

It might not be off the table altogether, though. When the White House was asked in April why she was not on their latest list, the press secretary replied “no-one is safe”.

Do Not Remove Ancient Landmarks For A Bowl Of Soup- Godfridah Sumaili Tells President HH

DO NOT REMOVE ANCIENT LANDMARKS FOR A BOWL OF SOUP

By Hon. Rev. Mrs Godfridah Sumaili

Non – Alignment policy is a landmark left to us by our forefathers to protect our sovereignty and maintain peace in our nation.

A wise man of the Bible by the name of Solomon in Proverbs 22:28 said , ” Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.”

The same words are spoken by Moses in Deuteronomy 19:14,
” You shall not remove the landmark which the men of old have set in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that your Lord, your God is giving you to possess.”
Essau sold his BIRTHRIGHT to Jacob for a bowl of soup because of desperate hunger.

Zambia is our territory, Zambia is our land, Zambia is our inheritance.

Zambia’s sovereignty is to be valued, respected and protected. Zambia belongs to Zambians not to one individual. If we allow Vultures to take our inheritance and sale our land to Satan for a bowl of soup, posterity will surely judge us.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda ( MHSRIP) our first Republican President , working with other distinguished, patriotic and selfless sons of Africa chose non – alignment policy in dealing with foreign powers in order to protect the sovereignty of their nations and the God – endowed natural resources. Subsequent Presidents have not wavered on the non – alignment policy but have consistently upheld it.

Non – Alignment is a landmark that should not be removed as it has contributed to peace that Zambia has enjoyed since Independence and has afforded us an unlimited access to economic support from various countries.

This is a clarion call on the new dawn Government to reflect and rethink over matters of sovereignty and non- alignment.

Zambia and her people come first. We should not compromise our sovereignty and our hard earned peace. Please your Excellency HH, do not remove ancient landmarks established by our forefathers for a bowl of soup. No inch of Zambian soil should be allowed to be used as war launching pad by foreigners in any circumstance.

Zambia belongs to Zambians.

I am not sure Zambians voted for a President who will be going on vacations in Cape Town- Bowman Lusambo

By Hon. Bowman Lusambo
Cape Town Vacation

We are told by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation that President Hakainde Hichilema will spend four days in Cape Town, South Africa attending the Africa Mining Indaba.

The Head of State is due to address the gathering on Monday at 09:00 Hrs.

As someone one who attended the Indaba as Copperbelt Minister on a number of occasions, I wish to place it on record that having an entire President at the Indaba for four days is not particularly a good way of managing the President’s time.

The Indaba is a great event for portfolio Ministers and Directors and other technocrats. At the Indaba, it would be foolish for a President to commit to anything without subjecting the issue to a Cabinet resolution. President Hichilema should quickly learn that government does not operate quite like a limited Company. If he uses the Cape Town event to over promise (like he always does) his imperialist friends who are after our mining assets, he will find difficulties in implementing those promises because government operates on a different framework.

From my experience, As important as the Mining Indaba is to mining development in Africa and across the world, having a President at this event for four days which is meant for Ministers at best is demeaning the office Mr. Hichilema occupies.

For a man who campaigned heavily on prudent utilization of public resources, spending four days in a very expensive city does not show frugality.

The key question should be, what will President Hichilema be left to do in Cape Town after he is done with his Key Note speech by mid day on Monday?

A bit of sight seeing on the Table Mountain? A tour of Robben Island perhaps?

Cape Town is a hugely tempting City especially if one’s stay there is being paid for by the tax payer but we should point out that keeping the President and his entourage in the Mother City will cost the treasury a fortune.

For a man who recently took a near one week break from home to stay at his Kalomo farm, President Hichilema appears to be a man for the soft life. His laissez-afire attitude towards work is unmatched.

I am not sure Zambians voted for a President who will be going on vacations every two weeks with just 10 months into his administration. We call on President Hichilema to immediately cut his Cape Town vacation immediately he is done with his Key Note Address and return to Lusaka.

Here at home, President Hichilema has a mountain of problems requiring his full attention and sight seeing should not be a priority for a man who has not even delivered a single election campaign promise, 10 months into office.

Going to Geneva not time to be sending perfumes for nephews, nieces – HH

Going to Geneva not time to be sending perfumes for nephews, nieces – HH

By Kombe Mataka

GOING to Geneva is not a time to keep on sending perfumes for nephews and nieces who are home, President Hakainde Hichilema guides newly appointed envoy Eunice Tembo.

He also reminded envoy to Namibia, Stephen Katuka that, “before you dress nicely to go to cocktails, four times a week,” to remember getting the memorandum of understanding on oil and gas is signed next month.

President Hichilema told the Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Danken Mulima to prioritise fuel and fertiliser.

This was during the swearing of five envoys in Colonel Panji Kaunda (Malawi), Katuka (Namibia), Tembo (UN/Geneva), Paulo Osita (DRC) and Mulima to Saudi Arabia at State House yesterday.

He asked the appointees to get to know the agenda of the UPND government, which is bringing the country together and ensuring socio-economic development.

“A united country will deliver more for the people than a divided country. I know some Zambians have been saying we don’t like this methodical process. It’s the way to do things. Running a country is a big issue. It’s not an abracadabra issue. You gonna get your sequence right. You’ve got to understand what’s gone wrong in the last 10 but more seven years. Why the country went down? You can’t go and find solutions to a problem you don’t understand. And how to sequence your solutions, this is part of the process. So remind yourselves of the UPND agenda. And I know behind unity are issues of equity, fairness – opportunity for all. You are going to head missions. And we have looked into the missions that we inherited and they were lopsided. So don’t continue with that practice. A country is a composite of pieces. One of the pieces is the mission you’ll be responsible for. So look at how you can unite the team in the mission, bring fairness, equity. Then we will depart from the past for the better,” he said. “The second thrust is that the party you are serving through is to serve the people always, is to accelerate economic and social development. When we get this second thrust, the big one, it means that your mind every day in the office – you should ask yourself, ‘how many opportunities am I creating for investment back home?’”

President Hichilema noted that Eunice Tembo has been at foreign affairs since a young lady.

“You know what we want from Geneva. Going to Geneva is not a time to keep on sending perfumes for nephews and nieces who are home, no! Your nieces can buy perfume online. They don’t need you to buy perfume. Those are old ways. The new ways is to say WHO (World Health Organisation) is there and many UN agencies are there. How are we going to leverage on your relationships to benefit the Ministry of Health home? As you know now I’m champion for cholera. What does that mean? That’s your menu there,” he advised. “I know ambassadors, high commissioners, believe in cocktails and diplomatic stuff, yeah! But this government, wants economic diplomacy to take centre stage – on top there. Trade, investments. We can’t just be importing. We want to export. That means jobs for our people. This story I can talk about it for some time. So we will be monitoring you. Foreign affairs there are two PSs (permanent secretaries) there. You are not there to… you are there to get the job done. If you are tired, you know what to do. Work with these colleagues, give them support. Give the PSs and the minister support. Vice-President [Mutale Nalumango] just to record a message, we are all appointees of the people through a democratic process. And since we are all appointees of the people, let’s accept that each one of us is duly appointed and none of us is going to change another because you don’t like somebody. We were elected on the platform of change.”

On Col Panji, he said he knew everything in Malawi.

“We are behind schedule on the Mwami Border. Fix that issue. President of Malawi [Lazarous Chakwera] and I agreed on the date. We have lost the time. We lost time, we have lost transactions. We have lost revenue. No one is better than you as High Commissioner to Malawi. No one. I believe. You know everything there,” he said.

On Katuka, he said Zambia and Namibia was next month expected to sign an MoU for oil and gas. “Part of my personal agenda is to lower the cost of energy…So that Kazungula Bridge means something to us. So we can improve this economy. That MoU means from there we must act. There is no issue of I’m not an economist. This is not economics. Just get that thing signed – it’s your priority. Before you dress nicely to go to cocktails, four times a week, remember that MoU,” he said. “We love you. We believe you will serve the people of Zambia. Many people want to be where you are today. But to address those concerns is to deliver.”

President Hichilema said his government’s interest is to serve the people and not to be served.

“I’m a chief marketing officer. You are the assistant marketing officers for Zambia and Malawi, in Namibia, in Congo DR. You [Ambassador Osita] know what we are doing in Congo DR. The MoUs we signed. You can’t be isolated from there. Daily you have to talk to the ministers, permanent secretaries – what are we doing? How far are the MoUs? How are we implementing them? That’s your job,” instructed President Hichilema. “Saudi Arabia, we have chatted. You know why you are going to Saudi Arabia. We want to sell food there. That’s a desert. This man [Mulima], Vice-President, studied in Saudi Arabia and speaks Arabic. That’s why he’s going there because he understands the culture and what we need. So we expect transactions from there. We shared what transactions we expect from there.

Ambassador Mulima, a delegation is coming there to pursue what you and I discussed in Abu Dhabi. Two things, key ones, fuel, fertiliser. Your colleagues are coming there. From this hour after taking pictures outside, start making calls there that a team is coming there and prepare for success of the team.” See less

Liswaniso’s Reflection On Junkies In Chibolya

LISWANISO’S REFLECTION ON JUNKIES

My diary in Chibolya ku ghetto…

PUNISHMENT OR REHABILITATION

After visiting the infamous Chibolya Gaza street, my reflection was as broad, having taken time to interact with youths in the ghetto.

I saw some youths who were willing to reform and become better citizens if given a chance.

I also saw educated, and uneducated, the responsible, and unresponsible youths abusing drugs such as Chamba and other substances.

These youths if arrested are taken to prison for 9 months or more and as soon as they come back they continue with the same acts.

Most arrest and imprisonments are for possession and ‘possession’ is not defined whether for use(patients) or trafficking(sell).

If it is for use then the user can be teamed as a patient who needs help(reform).

I have seen students from UNZA and other learning institutions flocking to Chibolya to smoke and if nabbed they are sent to prison 9 months or more for possession or using the substance.

If they are students they lose double, on education and society standing as they become ex-convicts because their cases fall under crime Justice system and not considered a ‘health’ problem.

DEC may have a program to reform but maybe it is not helping much as it may be difficulty for a young man who is willing to reform to a approach or surrender to a DEC officer whom they fear the most, its like an armed robber trusting the C5 unit (a sheep taking itself into a slaughter house).

Chainama is another rehabilitation center but carries a lot of stigma while private rehabs are very expensive.

It almost seem as though the war on drug abuse as created blackmarkets and an increase in substance abuse than reforming the victims who a mainly youths.

During our Chibolya visit we learnt through our interactions that youths need more sports recreation facilities and engaments in terms of rehabilitation as well as opportunity identification for business ventures.

Joseph Chingango a former boxer and a resident of Chibolya also observed that substance abuse was a challenge in the area among the young generation but was quick mention that opening more sports recreation facilities for boxing and other sports can go along way in helping youths to be active thereby preventing drug abuse.

Some youths demanded for the opening of a party office in Chibolya, for continuous mobilisation, sensitisation and education on programs and progress on party activities and enlightenment on formation of cooperatives so as to actively participate.

They say the want Chibolya to be known for good activities such as business and creativity as opposed to being associated with weed smoking.

I couldn’t agree more, “a good name is better than fine perfume” as the Bible says in Ecclesiastes.

Sometimes people are tempted to think everyone in Chibolya is the same or they all have a substance abuse issue when there families infact Zambians living in the area.

We appreciated the main challenges faced by our youths in the area and their willingness to change their living conditions as they aspired for more.

We will facilitate engagement with relevant authorities to help look into the plight of Chibolya residents.

President Hakainde Hichilema and the UNPD New Dawn Administration is an all inclusive government working to improve the livelihood of many Zambians through decentralization, thus; CDF, youth empowerment, loans and grants which can be accessed in any constituency.

For some youths in Chibolya and other places who are now termed as junkies due to excessive substance abuse, they should be treated as patient who need help than punishment so that they can contribute to the development of this country after all is said and done.

We love all youths across the country and we want everyone to participate in improving our localities while our lives too.

Hope you had a fulfilling Sunday…

Chile 1’s bedroom locked, it’s a crime scene – family

By Darious Kapembwa

SLAIN jerabo Richard Chileshe popularly known as Chile 1’s family has denied allegations by his eldest son Nathan that the family wants to deprive children of their property.
Chile 1, allegedly shot dead by his wife Ann Monta in the early hours of last Saturday after a brawl, was buried at the Nkana Memorial Park on Wednesday.

Nathan 21, narrated to an online publication Kalemba, that his late father’s family had since locked the bedroom where his father kept title deeds and documentation to his several properties dotted around the Copperbelt in a bid to deny the children access to them.
He further alleged that the family held a meeting hours after his father’s burial where it was suspected that they were sharing property without the children’s involvement.

But family spokesperson Kelvin Tembo said there was no truth in Nathan’s allegations because the family meeting that was held a day after burial was for the purpose of sending several mourners who had travelled for the funeral back to the village to lessen expenses because there were too many of them who had travelled and keeping them for long was going to be expensive.

Asked if it was true that the children were locked out of the bedroom, Tembo disclosed that the bedroom still remained locked at the instructions of the police because it is a crime scene under investigation.

He suspected that Nathan was being misinformed by someone from his mother’s side to say what he was saying.
Chile 1 has left behind seven children from four different women.

“Look, that meeting was about sending people back to the villages because we had a lot of family members that had travelled so it was going to be expensive to keep them for a long time. The situation is far from what the boy is saying. Definitely someone is misleading him,” Tembo said. “The bedroom is locked because the police have given instructions that no one opens it. It is a crime scene under investigation. So they don’t want anything or anyone to jeopardise their investigations. You know in our culture there is Isambo lyamfwa. Even that hasn’t happened because the bedroom is locked. Someone is whispering wrong things to the boy. It is very embarrassing to the family,” he said.
Asked if he had spoken to Nathan since he made the allegations, Tembo said he had sent for Nathan’s mother who was Chile 1’s first wife because he didn’t want to speak to the former alone.

“The last time somebody spoke to him, he was very rude. So I have sent someone to bring the mother along. I want to talk sense in him through the mother,” Tembo said.

Nathan and another 12-year-old were born from the first wife, while two other children were born from Chile’s two other girlfriends plus three from his last wife Annie who is the known legal wife.

“The youngest child is two and half. Even if you share property, what do you give her? I have told the family that no one touches anything. Actually, our line of thought is to create a Trust in which to put everything for the children so that when they grow up, they will manage things on their own. As things stand its only Nathan who is old enough to make sound decisions,” said Tembo. “But me I am thinking about the next 15-18 years for these younger ones. I have got children as well. I wouldn’t love them to suffer. So why should I make others suffer? My thinking right now is how will the children live in the next 15 years, 18 years from now. Their education and so on…the woman in custody is legally the recognised wife. What if witnesses say something else in investigations and she comes out and finds that property has been shared? She will sue all of us. So we have looked at all that. It’s quite embarrassing.”

Musokotwane justifies current borrowing

By Ernest Chanda

FINANCE minister Situmbeko Musokotwane
says money the new dawn government is borrowing from the World Bank conforms to the country’s economic recovery programme.
And secretary to the treasury Felix Nkulukusa said the government had already revealed IMF conditions through the national budget presented to parliament last December.

Addressing journalists on the outcome of the Spring Meetings he attended recently with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and other cooperating partners, Dr Musokotwane assured that the country is under the right economic recovery programme.
He highlighted support received from the Bretton Woods institutions, the Chinese executive director at IMF and other creditors.

“The World Bank did commit to provide more financial resources to Zambia. The kind of borrowing that is taking place now is in conformity with debt sustainability. But more importantly, as we do these reforms, as Zambia struggles to get out of the debt crisis, you need financing. You need financing because as we cut the jacket that is available, we want to make sure that in so doing we do not put excessive pressure on co-social sector areas in particular,” he told journalists at Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre yesterday. “We need to hire teachers; we need to build classrooms. We need to build health facilities, hire medical staff. But then you want to do these things at a time when you’ve no money. You’re indebted. So, there will be a lot of pressure on the poor of the poorest. To avoid that, as we restructure everything else about the economy it is necessary to get the so-called concessional financing from the Bretton Woods institutions – the World Bank. The interest rate is roughly about 0.5 per cent and it’s paid over a long period of time; sometimes as long as 30 years. So, it makes economic sense to get this cheap and long-term money as you sort out other issues of the economy. We are assured of magnificent support to Zambia’s economic recovery programme from both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).”
Dr Musokotwane said the Zambian delegation had “very fruitful meetings at world level culminating in the meeting that we had with the World Bank president himself. There was lots of support for the economic reform agenda that Zambia is pursuing”.

“Lots of support in terms of the reform. That is reform in revenues, expenditure operationalisation, and of course our emphasis on the point that going forward we are going to focus on seeing to it that the economy of Zambia begins to grow away from the negative growths or near-zero growths of the past few years,” said Dr Musokotwane.

And responding to a question on what conditionalities Zambia had agreed with the IMF during a staff level meeting, Nkulukusa noticed that the message had not been understood so far.

He said the economic reform agenda presented by the government when it just came into power detailed some of the reforms to be undertaken.

“So, it is the Zambian macro-economic framework that we have presented to the IMF. This framework is encumbered by the debt overhaul. And we came up with the debt sustainability analysis that says in order for us to have this framework, we think that our debt treatment should be reprofiled so that we can have that macro-economic framework,” he explained. “Three things that we committed in there that could come out. One, the minister committed that we are going to undertake expenditure in the social sector. Recruitment of 30,000 teachers, recruitment of 11,000 health workers. If we don’t do that and we use that money for something else, the IMF are going to tell us, ‘sorry, the macro-economic framework you told us was that you’re going to recruit teachers so that you invest in human capital and therefore we’ll not give you a programme.’ If we did that.’’

Nkulukusa explained other commitments government made to the IMF.
“We also committed that we are going to remove the subsidies on fuel. And that over the long term we are going to look at the cost-of-service study on electricity and that we are going to migrate to that cost-of-service study. So, those are the issues that the minister and the IMF mission chief talked about in January after we went onto that programme. There’s no secret beyond those issues that the minister announced in the budget,” said Nkulukusa.

Hichilema Has Become A National Security Risk- Dr Canisius Banda

By Dr Canisius BANDA Development Activist

ZAMBIA is now on the edge of a precipice of instability. You see, Zambia’s foreign policy has come off its wheels. It is now on the wrong path. Gradually, and firmly, we seem to be drifting away from our much venerated, almost immutable non-aligned stance. As seen by keen global geopolitical watchers, by allowing an office of AFRICOM to be set up on Zambia’s soil, Zambia is now taking SIDES.

Laying the foundation of the foreign policy of the Africans, Kwame NKRUMAH said: ‘We must neither look East nor West. We must look FORWARD.’ Of course, Hakainde wasn’t there. He missed this lesson. It used to be Zambia FORWARD. But now it seems to be Zambia WEST. It was okay, but what happened?

The foreign policy of the United States of AMERICA is very clear. It put America first and states that America should be the most powerful nation in the world, and no stone should be left unturned in pursuit of this goal and to spread, enhance/further and safeguard its interests. And to secure its INTERESTS, America uses various methods which include, but are not limited to, cultural, political, social and military. AFRICOM is the military wing of the United States of AMERICA aimed at securing these interests of hers through military means on the African continent. Primarily, AFRICOM is not for the benefit of Zambia.

Ambrose LUFUMA, Zambia’s defence minister’s knowledge of this seems parochially dangerous. His recent press statement dated 2 May 2022, arguing in defence of setting up the office of AFRICOM on Zambia’s soil was thoroughly disappointing, un-nationalistic, subservient and bordered on a betrayal of Zambia’s own interests.

The purpose of AFRICOM is as follows: ‘The U.S. Africa Command, with partners, counters transnational threats and malign actors, strengthens security forces, and responds to crises in order to advance U.S. NATIONAL INTERESTS and promote regional security, stability, and prosperity.’

Note that, loosely put, this is akin to Zambia joining NATO. It is similar to opening an office for disorder, for geopolitical chaos. What boggles the mind is why Zambia, after years of peace and quiet, a statutory Christian nation, is now courting disquiet and disaster. AFRICOM, either as an office, barracks or a base MUST not be on Zambia’s soil. PERIOD. Placing AFRICOM’s office on Zambia’s land firmly places Zambia in the crosshairs of all of America’s enemies, and they are not only many but they are powerful as well.

‘We should also be aware that much of the world regards Washington as a terrorist regime,’ cautions Noam CHOMSKY, a renowned public intellectual in his book entitled INTERVENTIONS.

‘Where are you from?’ That was Patrice LUMUMBA, a smile on his face.

‘Zambia,’I said.

Quickly, the smile vanished from his face, in its place was a contortion of disgust, fury and pain.
Refusing to shake my hand, he turned away from me, the way one would from the PLAGUE.
‘How many Zambians have read that book you carry?’ That was Nelson MANDELA, an epitome of freedom but a man that America had, for years, considered a terrorist.

I carried the book, ‘AFRIKA TWASEBANA’ by Simon Mwansa KAPWEPWE. I hang on to it the way human beings hang on to oxygen.
‘I don’t know,’ I honestly answered.

He appeared disappointed, hurt. The others just silently looked at me, their eyes probing, accusing and expectant.

There was Steve BIKO.
There was Thomas SANKARA.
There was Kwame NKHRUMAH.
There was Muammar GADDAFI.
There was Samora MACHEL.
There was Pombe MAGUFULI.
There was Gamal Abdel NASSER.
And many others. I thought I also saw Julia CHIKAMONEKA there.

They all just stared at me, a strong air of sadness pervaded the atmosphere, the occasion clearly sombre and serious, as if their collective dream for the Africans was in peril. To them I seemed to represent TREACHERY, SHAME and FAILURE.
A voice was saying: ‘This is the graveyard of African Heroes, child. It is a treasure trove of freedom, nationalism, sovereignty, identity and Africa’s unity. It is all you need, son. Do NOT look elsewhere for your salvation. Look within you. Use it for your future. It is your armour!’ You see, in everything, the steps we take as individuals, leaders or nations have specific outcomes.

Presently, by opening an office of AFRICOM on its soil, Zambia is not placing itself on the path of peace. It is departing from its required national attitude. Zambia is now in danger of becoming a theatre of war, wars of all types, not war from the liberation of Zambians from the perncious backwardness and poverty, but catastrophic wars between the world’s opposing elephants. Should we maintain this path or national attitude, Zambia’s future is BLEAK indeed.
This dalliance of Hakainde’s with America is going to end badly, it will end in disaster. It will end in regional disunity, domestic pain and tears.

‘You see Canisius, when THESE PEOPLE praise you, get worried. It means that you are not with your people.’ I turned towards the voice. It was Frederick TJ CHILUBA. Respectfully, silently, I nodded.

By opening an office for AFRICOM on Zambia’s soil, Zambia will now firmly be in the crosshairs of America’s enemies. Ipso facto, our NON-ALIGNED status ceases.

This then is how Hakainde HICHILEMA, our own Republican President, has become a national security risk. If the history of America’s military engagement with other nations should inform us about our own future, then a cause/case for grave concern is laid. We must worry.

Zambians must say NO to the presence of AFRICOM on our soil in whatever form. Hakainde HICHILEMA, I have a question for you. As an act of required symbolism by every African, when you went to the Democratic Republic of CONGO, did you lay a wreath of acknowledgement and respect on the grave of Patrice LUMUMBA?

Oh, you didn’t. This is why I have tears in my eyes. And they refuse to be wiped away.

Indeed, aluta continua!

In a shocking development, firebrand Zambian opposition leader, James Lukuku, has died under mysterious circumstances.

Lukuku was admitted at the University Teaching Hospital(UTH) and died last night.

Lukuku will be remembered for his one man march to the US Embassy in protest against the Chinese influence in Zambia.

Before his death, Lukuku recorded the video below :

Lukuku was also the spokesman of the UPND opposition coalition for the 2021 elections.

RPP Vice President Leslie Chikusu confirmed the deatrh of Lukuku.

Mr. Chikuse said that the late Mr. Lukuku had complained of stomach pains and was admitted to the University Teaching Hospitals last evening around 21:00 hours.

He said the death of Mr. Lukuku has robbed the country of a youthful leader who was fearless when it comes to matters of Governance. Mr. Chikuse said the death of the PRR Leader will affect the party’s preparations for the 2021 General election.

He said the funeral gathering for the late Mr. Lukuku is at his home in Garden Compound near Petroda filling station and that burial arrangements will be announced later.

And UPND has released the following statement:

President Lukuku died at UTH after a short illness.

We shall remember President Lukuku as a fearless politician who gave all for the liberation of this country.

Mr.Lukuku’s dream was to see a people-driven constitution in Zambia.

Apart from his fight for the rule of law and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, President Lukuku looked forward to the collapse of the evil Bill 10.
We shall remember President Lukuku for his commitment to the unity of purpose towards achieving a dream for a better Zambia.

He was a friend to the UPND family and hoped that one day, President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND family would redeem the millions of Zambians from abject poverty.
As UPND, we have lost a comrade. We have lost a freedom fighter. We have lost a progressive thinker and we have lost a fearless politician.
We shall miss his fearless political life.

Dont Judge Me By The Actions Of My Brothers Nor My Friends- Hon. Binwel Mpundu

DONT JUDGE ME BY THE ACTIONS OF MY BROTHERS NOR MY FRIENDS.

By Hon. Binwel Mpundu

I’m always at pains to understand why everytime there’s a discussion on Young people being given opportunities to be in governance position, there’s always a reference to one or two young people who could have acted inappropriately and those are used as a yardstick to condemn other young people and justify why young people should not be given opportunities to lead.

Surprisingly old people have done terrible things in leadership, they have made terrible errors in judgment regarding governance issues including defrauding this country of huge sums of money. The same old folks have brought this country to where it is in terms of tribalism.

Just ask yourselves how many young people who have so far been given positions either elected or appointed now or before who have done worse things regarding governance compared to the old folks.

If you do that comparison now tell me why it still continues to be easy to castigate young people on the basis of one or two others who are acting or acted inappropriately. Why is it not easy to equally judge the old folks based on the sins of their peers. Talk about corruption who have been the culprits?? Tribalism who habe been the culprits?? Mismanagement who have been the culprits??

Give the young people a chance to also showcase their abilities.
My post is not in relation to the appointment of Panji and Katuka but in relation to coments i have been seeing on why young people should not be trusted with leadership positions.
Dont we have young people now who are doing fairly well who can be used as examples and a reason to identify more young people and be given a chance??

Even you ba youth salapukeni busy joining the band wagon of those who are robbing you of opportunities to lead instead of standing up to defend yourselves and fighting for your share.
Aleni continue singing praises for others tukamona if you will be recognised.

YOUNG PEOPLE STAND UP AND POSITION YOURSELVES FOR LEADERSHIP BETTER STILL FIGHT FOR LEADERSHIP BECAUSE YOUR TIME IS NOW AND NOT IN FUTURE BECAUSE THAT FUTURE IS NOT DEFINED.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S APPOINTMENTS

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S APPOINTMENTS

By Kellys Kaunda

Whoever the President appoints and to whatever position he makes the appointment, like past Presidents, he will face similar constraints and limitations thus making similar appointments and most likely producing similar results.

The President will appoint Zambians – the same pool his predecessors has drawn from; the President will appoint both men and women as his predecessors did; the President will blend both the young and the old as before; some will be very educated while others not so educated.

Some appointments will surely be merited while others will raise eyebrows because some members of the public know something about them that does not agree with their definition of merit. Some of those appointed will have questionable credibility issues while others will come across as impeccable.

Some civil servants will be moved upwards by way of promotions while others will be moved elsewhere and yet others frustrated out of their jobs because the new dispensation has become intolerant or not welcoming.

Some appointments will be controversial for reasons that may include regional representation politics while others may be of a gender balancing nature.

One of the common statements among all the appointing authorities is that they have put in place a team like no other and that they are competent men and women who will deliver on the expectations of the Zambian people.

On the policy front, the blueprint has been largely similar – more of liberal economic principles with sprinkles of social democratic principles here and there.

From Kaunda to Hichilema, this is the scenario I have seen play out like a movie you have watched a couple of times before.

But, like the old saying, the devil is in the detail. Perhaps, I need more analytical tools, especially from the school of policy analysis, to pick out details that may have been missed by the broad sweep of my broom.

In all fairness, it would be arrogant of me to assume my analysis is adequate to capture the impact of the policies of the New Dawn government. Academic integrity has taught me humility which is normally absent among politicians as they contend for the supremacy of their ideas.

Next time, I will use a system’s or organizational culture approach to seek an understanding of President Hichilema’s style of governance and what changes he may have brought that may not have been seen before.

VEDANTA RESOURCES INTENSIFIES ITS PURSUIT TO RECLAIM KCM

VEDANTA RESOURCES INTENSIFIES ITS PURSUIT TO RECLAIM KCM

By Michael Kaluba

Embattled Konkola Copper Mines-KCM owners Vedanta Resources has intensified it’s pursuit to reclaim the asset and recently wrote to the Zambian government and other stakeholders to explain it’s plans to recapitalize the mine amidst protracted court proceedings over the past 3 years.

In a letter dated May 5, 2022 obtained by Phoenix News, and addressed to the Minister of Mines Paul Kabuswe and copied to President Hakainde Hichilema, the Ministry of Finance, Mineworker Unions, ZCCM-IH and Local Suppliers and Contractors, Vedanta said it stands ready to help Zambia achieve the vision to produce 3 million tonnes of copper annually.

The letter signed by Vedanta Chief Executive Officer Sunil Duggal has pointed out that the company was elated by media sentiments attributed to Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe and published on 26 April 2022, saying that if Vedanta were allowed to resume running KCM, the government of Zambia would put in place strict conditions so that vedanta conducted itself in a different manner than it used to in the past.

Vedanta argues that the current impasse over KCM does not serve the interests of any of the stakeholders and has pledged to implement a 20% salary increment across the board once given the operating license back and after a forensic audit of the asset is completed and a one off payment of K2500 within 3 months following a failure by the mine to adjust workers conditions of service over the past 3 to 4 years.

The embattled mining firm also pledges to enhance Zambia’s quest to produce the much needed electric vehicle batteries having just signed an MOU on the manufacturing of semiconductors, using copper metal, in India with it’s South Korean partners.

And Vedanta has committed itself to investing in social infrastructure programmes in order to uplift the communities where programmes shall be established by a special purpose community trust which will support hospitals, clinics, schools, provide scholarships, livestock, and promote youth development programs, training and sports development including football sponsorship.

ACC STANCE ON BOWMAN’S BAIL SHOCKS CHILANGWA

ACC STANCE ON BOWMAN’S BAIL SHOCKS CHILANGWA

ROUTINE verification for the process of obtaining bail for Bowman Lusambo on Thursday upset PF acting secretary general Nickson Chilangwa after ACC asked for physical identification of sureties.

Chilangwa said, in a statement, that he expected the Anti-Corruption Commission to know parliamentarians Miles Sampa and Davison Mung’andu who were presented as sureties for Lusambo who was seeking bail.

Lusambo, the Kabushi PF member of parliament and former Lusaka Province minister, spent another night in custody after failing to meet bail conditions on Thursday.

“What President Hakainde Hichilema through the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has today done to Hon. Bowman Lusambo is sadistic and a travesty of justice. Why does the President act contrary to what he preaches? Hypocrisy,” Chilangwa said. “It is absurd that the ACC can claim that they don’t know whether or not, Hon Miles Sampa and Hon Davison Mung’andu are members of parliament. What kind of buffoonery is this? Do these officers at ACC have any personal conscience or they are under remote control or are under a spell!”

He said any officer at high level who doesn’t know that Sampa and Mung’andu “are representatives of our people in parliament must immediately resign”.

“They don’t deserve to occupy the offices they are occupying. With such ignorance at ACC, the country is in trouble and no one who appears before the ACC is safe,” Chilangwa charged.

He said Sampa and his Chama South PF counterpart were on Thursday brought before court as Lusambo’s sureties but the ACC claimed that they did not know the suerites.

“They rejected the letters saying they needed to verify with the National Assembly whether it is indeed true that Miles Sampa and Davison Mung’andu are MPs. This is clearly wanton and excessive abuse of the law and the court processes,” he said. “We have said time and again that this crusade is not about corruption, no. It is about revenge, persecution and fixing political scores and we have been vindicated. Mr Hichilema is so obsessed with his bitter desire to fix PF members and kill PF. But we have word for Mr Hichilema, power comes and goes and the very things you are doing to others shall be done to you when you leave that office. Let go of your anger and bitterness. You are in that office to serve the people of Zambia and not to punish your perceived political enemies.”- The Mast

There is increasing calls for Former Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan to run for President in 2023

The Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND) has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan, to heed the call from Nigerians, to join the presidential race.

The group made the call in a statement by its National Secretary, Amb. Amain Cottrell on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

The statement noted that the Jonathan option was sure to stabilize Nigeria, adding that fielding Jonathan would ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would retain power beyond 2023.

“We commend our brothers from the northern part of the country, calling for the former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, to throw his hat into the ring, to contest the 2023 presidential elections.

“We have carefully considered the profiles of the caliber of men and women who have indicated interest to contest the presidential election of 2023 and the need to choose a credible, transparent, and experienced candidate who understands the multifarious problem of the country.

“Nigeria needs a leader with the capacity, discipline, focus and temperament, to manage and address the situation, while still taking the country out of the socio-economic challenges.

“The country is in dire need of healing the wounds and interethnic dissatisfaction and religious rivalry.

“In these aforementioned areas, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan stands tall, with an unmatched track record,” the statement added.

According to the statement, it is the group’s view that the former president is one who is not power-hungry.

“The whole world knows that Dr Jonathan is not desperate about coming back, hence, he will be a bit reluctant in accepting this onerous task.

“Of course, Jonathan’s competence to handle Nigeria’s problems more effectively and efficiently is not in doubt.

“He is not new in that environment, he was focused and steadily fulfilling his vision and agenda for the country, before the interruption and will swiftly get things done before any other candidate.

“To this wise, having extensively consulted far and wide with community youth leaders and critical ethnic nationality stakeholders in the region, we have their consent to call on the former president to accept the clarion call by Nigerians to contest the 2023 Election.

“It is obvious that while as humans, we have our plans and dreams about the country, God also has His plans to advance Nigeria as well.

“God has not finished with Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, concerning the leadership of our great country yet,” it said.

It added that the group had advised the former president to be mindful of the fact that the people of the region would not welcome him if he turned down the call of the masses.

According to the statement, the group has observed that the situation in the country requires someone with a wealth of experience, detribalized and uncommon leadership attributes, to fix the challenges.

“Nigerians cannot afford to misuse this opportunity to stabilize the country.

“Jonathan has been there, he has a clear roadmap to bail us from the challenges we find ourselves in.

“We will appreciate all our ministers, governors and others, across the party divide, to draw wisdom from Sen Bala Mohammed decision to step down, if Jonathan finally decides to contest.

“Jonathan’s return will usher in a Unity Government,” the statement said.

These include the development of a more conducive, enabling policy environment; the identification of new opportunities; commodity diversification; deepening local involvement; and enhancing the capabilities of small-scale miners.

The 2022 Mining Indaba theme is: “Evolution of African Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) and Economies,”where it is expected that discussions will centre around battery metals and their role in the energy transition.

President Hichilema’s participation in the Indaba presents a great opportunity for Zambia to market her rich mineral resource and investment potential to the international mining community. The Indaba will create a platform for high-level engagement, sharing of information on this strategic sector, and creation of synergies that will accrue benefits to the Zambian people.

The President has always underscored the key role that the mining sector will continue to play in accelerating economic growth through harnessing available opportunities in the sector; increasing copper and other mineral production; maximizing benefits from various metals; further exploration and value addition as well as positioning the country to be a lead manufacturer of mineral value-added products.
To this end, President Hichilema’s participation in the Mining Indaba is projected to unlock opportunities for investment; reinforce bilateral relations with other countries within the region and further strengthen partnerships for greater cooperation in the country’s quest for development for the benefit of the Zambian people.

President Hichilema will be accompanied by the Minister of Finance and National Planning Hon. Situmbeko Musokotwane and Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul M. C. Kabuswe and is expected to return to Zambia on 11th May, 2022.

Arrest the Contractor not the Client

Arrest the Contractor not the Client

By Ngobola Cengelo Muyembe

If it was a Design-Build contract, then arrest the contractor because he is entirely responsible for the works and here is why. In a Design-Build Contract, there are the employer’s requirements and the Contractor’s proposal.

The employer in the case was the government of Zambia approached the contractor with a set of requirements. Those requirements were to build them an FTJ University. The contractor responded with a proposal that included the production of design work, time schedules, proof of experience and a guarantee that they will fulfil the employer’s requirements.

The key item is to have an extremely experienced employer who understands contract management and the laws that govern them.

That is why one of the first documents to submit before any advance payment can be given to the contractor is the advance payment guarantee which the contractor obtains at his own cost and can be cashed by the employers in an event of default.

In a DB, the risk is entirely on the contractor, so arresting Mr Yamba means someone does not know what they are doing and might botch the entire case. One might say the risk in Design-Build is the lack of an independent consultant to evaluate the work as it happens, but the employer usually has an advisor especially when the project is of such magnitude.

Single point responsibility and the nature of the relationship between the employer’s requirement and the contractor’s proposal is actually an advantage for the employer. It does not matter the contact sum, but the contractor is responsible for everything including the design and production of necessary statutory approvals. The contractor must do whatever is necessary to achieve the employer’s requirements and, in this case, it was to build them a university.

What that means is that there is no risk associated with the employer and all the risk of the costs exceeding, completion time or the price lies entirely with the contractor. There might be some changes that may result in the employer being liable for some extra money but all the liabilities including completion, default and time are with the contractor.

Those volumes you purchase from procurement offices when bidding for work are not for decoration. Some people just go straight to the BOQ not knowing that there are also Conditions of Contracts which come in nine parts and there is a reason for that.

You need a person with knowledge of construction management or construction contracts because if you just rely on some of these law enforcement officers, you will end up arresting the wrong person.

This is Young Venon Mwaanga shortly after Zambia’s independence in 1964, he became the country’s first Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom

0

This is Young Venon Mwaanga shortly after Zambia’s independence in 1964, he became the country’s first Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and the following year, he became Zambia’s Ambassador to the Union of Soviet Socialist.
Shortly before his 24th birthday, he became Zambia’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in New York.
It was at the UN that he was elected to represent Zambia on the UN Security Council, a position held for two years from January 1969 to December 1970.
It was while he held this position at the UN that Dr Mwaanga made history by becoming the world’s youngest member of the UN Security Council.

In today’s Zambian governments, leadership positions are meticulously and methodically only for old and rusty men and women who have nothing to look forward to, no enthusiasm, barely a drive, perhaps this is why we have too much corruption which sadly only gets to be uncovered when they leave office (it’s like DEC and ACC are currently blind to the current leadership’s corruption, “after all we all saw they were just calendars and pens” lol).

It’s a known fact that youths decided the 2021 presidential election result, (mostly 18 to 25s),yet majority are now self-appointed praise team singers, busy showering praises at whatever the president says and does, right or wrong, there’s is to praise, what’s there to praise ladies and gentlemen, fossil appointments?

I find it really sad that youths are only remembered during election times by most political parties, some unfortunately even willingly instructed to fight and insult, and we have been reduced to cadres, left to do all the donkey work that most madalas feel is too dirty to handle.

Is there a future for this country? Do most of our political parties even have deliberate training opportunities for their young people?

One of my friends always says that our country’s problems can only be fixed by people of this generation, times have changed, technology has changed major sectors over the past 20 years, and do most of our ministers understand this, what innovation will ba Felix Mutati bring through his ministry? I like ba Silvia Masebo mostly for her tenacity on the job but clearly she is quite rusty now, ministry of health seems like too huge a mountain to her,……..

Anyways my concern is the young people in our beloved Zambia being ku waya throughout all the various governments we have and have had, how I wish today’s Presidents could have the faith and confidence that KK had in, it was risky yes, am sure most of those young people he appointed made a few mistakes but got better and most of them became leaders that shaped this country.

May our Youths also take keen interest in the affairs of our nation, may we get more and more involved, may we speak out!

Revelation By The Local Govt Service Commission Over Defraud Of Revenue By Staff Is A Wake Up Call For UPND Govt- Kanema

REVELATION BY THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE COMMISSION OVER DEFRAUD OF REVENUE BY STAFF IS A WAKE UP CALL FOR UPND GOVERNMENT__ KANEMA

…..As he urges the Government to clean the system the same way markets and bus stations have been cleaned.

06/05/2022

UPND North Western province Youth chairperson Mr Bruce Kanema has expressed displeasure and concerns by the revelation of the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) Chairperson Mr Ackson Sejani who disclosed that the Government has unearthed a scam in which Councils are being defrauded of revenue.

Few days ago, the Local Government Commission Chairperson Mr Ackson Sejani disclosed that a scam has been uncovered in which staff in the revenue departments of
local authorities are conniving to defraud their councils.

The Local Government Service Commission named the officers involved as cashiers, revenue officers, chief accountants and those in the Information Communication and Technology department.

But Mr Bruce Kanema said it was unfortunate that even when the Cadres have been removed from bus stations and markets, the Councils have been failing to deliver to the expectations of the public because of their old habits of stealing.

He stated that UPND Government should not treat some of these officers in the system with white groves because they will make UPND Government work under very difficult conditions but better to be shown an exit door.

Mr Kanema said the patriotic Front Cadres have remained in the system hence doing the criminal activities to paint UPND Government black like they have no capacity to deliver.

Mr Kanema has called on the UPND Government to wake up and screen these Government institutions like the way the Local Government Service Commission has done in order for the UPND Government to deliver to the expectations of the people of Zambia.

Mr Kanema has thanked the Local Government Service Commission Chairperson Mr Ackson Sejani, Local Government Service Commission vice Chairperson Mr Brian Ndumba and the executive Members for showing the way and doing what the people of Zambia have always wished to see and that the youths in North Western Province will support the Commission for it’s approach to clean the system.

He stated that the happenings at the Ministry of Local Government should trickle down to other Ministries for the sake of better Services to the people of Zambia.

President HH and his call for peace in our country

President HH and his call for peace in our country

By Ross Josphat Kasikili

Peace has been preached and is being practiced under the UPND New Dawn Government .

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines peace as a state of tranquility or quiet, while an Oxford Dictionary defines it as the state of being calm or quiet. Many others have defined the word peace as a freedom from disturbance; tranquillity.

The Hebrew word translated as peace is shalom (shaw-lome’), and according to Strong’s concordance, it means completeness, soundness, and welfare.

It is a well known fact that as a country we started losing our vision as far as peace and Freedom is concern to an extent that belonging to another political party then was a crime.

It is said that Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. Finally we have the light to shine upon us all and that our lips can talk about peace, Love and unity amongst ourselves.

Mahatma Gandhi once said that an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.

It is with such a background that we need to cherish peace and Freedom that has been brought by the UPND New Dawn regime.

It is through peace that we will be able to see individuals wanting to invest in our country and that through peace even business and development will be able to flourish.

This peace being preached and practiced by the UPND New Dawn Government should trickle down to our Homes so that we prevent the killings between the husband and the wife and even some unfortunate divorces.

Eight (08) Months ago whilst in opposition, president Hakainde Hichilema preached about peace and today we are beneficiary of this peace were political thuggery is the thing of the past. Through peace we shall succeed together.

Ronald Reagan once said that When you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.

Zambians have now been given an opportunity to understand and enjoy what peace means that even in public places they can’t be insulted or harassed by political Cadres and that media houses operate freely without being suspended or closed.

Our call is to continue enjoying this peace and together as a people we can sustain this peace.

Blessed Day Family and Friends

Tech titans look to ditch passwords

Apple, Google and Microsoft are considering replacing passwords with a more secure way to access accounts or devices.

The U.S tech titans jointly announced support for a common standard that will let people sign in by unlocking their mobile phones, say, with fingerprint or face recognition.

“The complete shift to a password-less world will begin with consumers making it a natural part of their lives,” said Microsoft vice president Alex Simons.

“By working together as a community across platforms, we can, at last, achieve this vision and make significant progress toward eliminating passwords.”

Reliance on passwords alone is decried as a major security flaw on the internet, with people keeping them overly simple or using the same one repeatedly to make it easier to manage many accounts.

Adopting standards created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium will let websites and device makers build secure, password-less options into their offerings, the groups said in a release.

Using secure keys instead of passwords would stymy phishing scams that trick people into disclosing log-in credentials and hackers that steal such data.

“Today is an important milestone in the security journey to encourage built-in security best practices and help us move beyond passwords,” U.S cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency director Jen Easterly said.

Support for password-free log-ins will be woven into Android and Chrome software over the course of the coming year, said Google product manager and FIDO Alliance president Sampath Srinivas.

Apple and Microsoft announced plans to do likewise with their software.

“This will simplify sign-ins across devices, websites, and applications no matter the platform – without the need for a single password,” Srinivas said in a blog post.

“When you sign into a website or app on your phone, you will simply unlock your phone.”

Mobile phones will store a FIDO credential referred to as a “passkey” that will be used to unlock online accounts, Srinivas explained.

“To sign into a website on your computer, you’ll just need your phone nearby and you’ll simply be prompted to unlock it for access,” Srinivas said.

Eliminating passwords was billed as more secure than two-factor authentication which involves getting one-time passcodes texted or emailed as secondary confirmation when logging into sites or services.- CGTN

UK to introduce new visa that allows university graduates to relocate to the country

0

The United Kingdom has announced that it will begin issuing a new visa that allows holders of first degrees, masters, and doctorates to travel to the country and work in fields such as science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship by May 30.

The visa – high potential individual (HPI) visa, allows applicants to relocate to the UK without a prior job offer or sponsorship.

However, graduates of Nigerian universities do not qualify to be issued this visa.

The UK government said that in order to qualify for the HPI visa, applicants needed to have been awarded a degree from a university that is ranked top 50 as published in the global universities list by the Home Office.

The government noted that the list would be compiled annually and would comprise institutions included in the list of the top 50 universities in at least two of the following ranking systems: Times Higher Education World University rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds World University rankings, and the Academic Ranking of the World Universities.

Also, the applicants must have been awarded a degree, equivalent to or not less than a UK bachelor’s degree.

Nigerian universities do not appear in any of these global rankings.

According to the UK Minister of Safe and Legal Migration, Kevin Foster, the High Potential Individual visa route is targeted at attracting high-skilled foreign university graduates, who will be allowed to work and stay in the UK for two or three years.

On the expiration of the visa, the holders could switch to permits under the skilled worker, start-up and innovator, exceptional talent, or scale-up route for continued stay in the UK.

Foster said: “The new High Potential Individual route will make it as simple as possible for internationally mobile individuals who demonstrate high potential to come to the UK. It will enable those who have already demonstrated their potential through academic achievement to come to the UK without a prior job offer.

“If you’ve been resident in the UK for more than 12 months, you might not need to meet this requirement. Graduates with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree will be given a two-year visa. Ph.D. or other doctoral-level graduates will get visas valid for three years. This visa can only be granted once and will not be available to those who have already had a Graduate visa.”

BEMBA HEGEMONY, EGOCENTRISM IS KILLING PF

BEMBA HEGEMONY, EGOCENTRISM IS KILLING PF

The Candidates’ Comment

Anyone who is a Bemba by tribe and has capacity to hire handclappers in the Patriotic Front feels and actually believe they can be President of their party, and subsequently lead this country. Perhaps, this is why even the majority of those who have lined themselves up to take over from Edgar Lungu are Bembas. Bembas say it openly in PF that it is now time for someone from any of the Bemba-land to take over from Edgar. They have made it a strict edict that the President of their party, this time around, can only come from areas where they speak Bemba and other aligned but related languages or tribe.

An aura of Bemba hegemony is so arrogantly vivid in PF that it sometimes stinks.

At the moment, being Bemba is a very huge advantage in PF. If you hail from any of the areas considered Bemba-land, you are ten times ahead than any other person from a different region or tribe. The first qualification to being a President in PF at the moment is being a Bemba. Even allowing Edgar to lead them was a by the way thing of necessity. If they had their way, Edgar wasn’t going to be allowed to be the successor of Michael Sata. In fact, many of these Bembas in PF never liked Edgar. They only liked the benefits of the power he had. In public, they pretended and projected that they loved Edgar but in the privacy of their toilets, they insulted and swore against him.

It is this Bembalisation of PF which will cost them and will lead their party to death. They simply cannot see their party being led by anyone else than Bembas only. This is why; everyone who wants to be President in PF is either Bemba or comes from a tribe that is not far from being Bemba. They simply expect all those from other areas to be useful idiots in their quest to preside over Zambia’s affairs.

When you scan carefully at the dispositions of the elements who have lined themselves up, to take over from Edgar, who is upright among them? Most of them are idiots and have no proper disposition to lead anyone. Yes, they may have been leaders here and there but that is because they were appointed into those positions based on patronage. Most of these elements have no substances in their heads. They are worthless elements who cannot lead anyone. But there they are, they want to be Presidents.
If this kind of nonsense was being done in any other party, they would be on top of their voices shouting blue murder saying it is tribalism.

Actually, the PF have run with a narrative that it is a rule in UPND that only a Tonga can lead. They have accused Hakainde Hichilema of being a tribalist and that UPND is a tribal cult. Yet, whatever they say is tribalism in UPND is also happening in PF. It is an issue of umwine wachisushi doesn’t smell it.

We know that beyond those empty elements who want to succeed Edgar, there are many other sound people like Joe Malanji who is has some sort of morality and leadership disposition and better placed to lead a disorderly party and give it proper direction. But they can’t look at Joe because they consider him an outsider simply because he hails from Northwestern. We have actually been reliably informed that Raphael Nakacinda was almost appointed PF secretary general not until when some Bembas tribalists in this party violently objected on a premise that he is half Tonga, half Easterner.

Chitotela contests prosecution, citing immunity

By Mwaka Ndawa

PAMBASHE PF member of parliament Ronald Chitotela has contested his prosecution for acquiring a house and K500,000 using ‘illegal gains’ on reasons that he entered into an agreement with the Anti-Corruption Commission to exempt him from prosecution on these charges.

Chitotela has since been admitted to K20,000 cash bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court on a condition that he provides two working sureties from reputable organisations who have been bound in the sum of K200,000 to be paid in their own recognisance.

This is in a matter where Chitotela is facing two counts of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Allegations are that between May 1, 2017 and October 30, 2018, Chitotela possessed property No. 3270/M, valued at K380,000 suspected to be tainted.

In the second count, it is alleged that Chitotela between November 3 and December 5, 2017 received K500,000 from Veil Construction Limited through RKC Travel and Guide Limited account No. 62489001398 suspected to be ill gotten.

Before Chitotela could take plea before magistrate Jennifer Bwalya, his lawyer Kampamba Kombe applied that Chitotela’s charges be dismissed pursuant to Article 18(5) of the Constitution which states that a person who has been tried or convicted on a specific offense shall not be tried on the same offence.

“A quick look at the indictment will show that the two counts were a subject of a consent settlement pursuant to Section 80 of the ACC Act No. 3 of 2012. The consent settlement will show count one and two of the indictment,” Kombe said. “There was an undertaking by ACC not to institute any criminal proceedings against Chitotela in relation to the charges. We are taken aback by the ACC to indict the accused person on the same charges.”

Kombe asked the court to determine as whether or not the settlement falls within the ambit of Article 18(5) of the Constitution.

In response, ACC prosecutor Martin Mayembe argued that Chitotela was not tried before any court in relation to the charges.

“Trial begins after a person takes plea and the accused did not take plea. The submission by the defence of the acquittal is misplaced. The accused never appeared before court in relation to the said charges. The question before Court is whether Section 80 of the ACC Act No. 3 of 2012 may result in an acquittal,” Mayembe submitted. “There is a way undertakings can be resolved when there is breach and the State will be ready to defend. We pray that the application be dismissed and plea be taken by the accused.”

In response, Kombe said Mayembe was blank about the consent which bordered on the matter before court.

“This is a matter that was called in court and the accused took plea. It was on that particular day when the prosecutor frowned that the settlement would be filed in court. The settlement was endorsed by the then chief resident magistrate. The settlement was imposed by the ACC and they were satisfied that the accused had met the requirements of section 80 of the ACC Act,” he said. “For the prosecutor to say that there was no trial is trying to mislead the court. The State have not given evidence in their response that the consent has been set aside or breached. The breach of this undertaking is neither here nor there. As defence we are sure that the accused was tried before a competent court which resulted in the consent settlement.”

He added that Section 128 of the Criminal Procedure Code was instructive that a person could not be tried on the same facts and it was the reason they had raised a plea in bar.

Chitotela’s other lawyer Benjamin Mwelwa said if the ACC breached the consent, the right thing to have been done was to commence an action before court in order to have an opportunity to defend itself.

“After it has been found that there is a breach the court will set aside the consent. The State will be at liberty to open the offence subject to that consent.

The breach has not been cited but we are glad that the State has conceded that there was a consent and the same facts before court are the same in the consent which was registered before court complying section 138 of the criminal procedure code and 80 of the ACC Act,” Mwelwa submitted.

And Mayembe raised a preliminary issue pursuant to Rule 33 (1)(d) of the legal practitioners’ rules requesting that Kombe recused himself as he was a potential witness of the Commission in the matter.

“Counsel is a potential witness and we don’t know what will happen at the time we will request him to testify. We submit that Andrew Kombe of Messrs Andrew Kombe and Partners recuses himself from participating in the proceedings in any manner and if possible, not attend proceedings as he is a potential witness,” said Mayembe.

In response, Kombe said though it was a preserve of the State to have him on their list of witnesses, he wouldn’t have bothered to appear before court and represent Chitotela if at all he was earlier informed by the ACC.

“I’m surprised the learned PP would indicate in court that I’m a potential witness,” said Kombe.

Supplementing Kombe’s submission, Mwelwa said the state cannot continue investigating the matter when it was already before court.

“No statement has ever been recorded from Kombe, therefore the submission does not fall under Rule 33(d) of the legal practitioners rules. The State is asserting misconduct on the part of Kombe. We submit that Kombe is not a potential witness as no record has been exhibited before court. We pray that the application be dismissed,” said Mwelwa.

In response, Mayembe said proceedings before the subordinate court were by ambush therefore statements or depositions could not arise as witnesses were called at the instance of the court.

He added that Kombe was informed that he would be a witness in the matter.

Magistrate Bwalya has reserved ruling on both applications for May 18.

Mtayachalo advises HH to heal from incarceration and move on

Mtayachalo advises HH to heal from incarceration and move on

By Christopher Miti

CHAMA North PF member of parliament Yotam Mtayachalo says President Hakainde Hichilema should get over the 127 days he spent in prison and move on.

And Mtayachalo says the new dawn government must quickly go back to the drawing board and make necessary adjustments to its economic policies so that people can start seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

In a statement, Mtayachalo urged President Hichilema to give politics a new image.
“I listened how President Hakainde Hichilema recounted his ordeal while in prison during the press conference, but my only advice to him is to get over the 127 days he spent in prison and move on. Because what he went through was an occupational hazard but instead during his tenure, he should endeavour to give politics a new image because political hooliganism and violence have no place in the modern world order,” he said. “These vices must be fought vigorously. However, I should commend President Hichilema for outlawing cadreism in markets and bus stations, which is a step in the right direction. I have seen again the culture of political violence and insults has slowly started laying its ugly face and as such the President should not relent but put his foot down so that the era of political violence and insults should never be tolerated.”

Mtayachalo urged President Hichilema to emulate former South African president Nelson Mandela who forgave those who abused him.
“I also remember in 2014, I was with HH at Sun FM during the radio programme in Ndola when we were attacked by cadres who were armed with guns and other offensive weapons while the police watched helplessly. And HH had to escape through the roof of the building, which was totally unacceptable and uncalled for,” he said. “And as such never should again such behaviour lay its ugly face on the Zambian political platform.

However, let HH emulate Nelson Mandela who was incarcerated for 27 years for fighting for a just society and against racial segregation but he had to pay a heavy price. But Mandela was not bitter and never frequently mentioned about his ordeal in jail but instead he preached love, reconciliation and even went a step forward by appointing Frederik de Klerk as one of the vice-presidents in the government of national unity (GNU) after the 1994 historic landmark all-race elections.”

Mtayachalo also cited Dr Kenneth Kaunda who was sent to prison by colonial masters before he became president of Zambia.
He further cited Michael Sata who was also sent to prison on an allegation of theft of motor vehicle during the Levy Mwanawasa administration but he moved on.

“By and large, competition for political power should not be a matter of life and death but a competition of ideas. And as such ruling and
opposition parties should not lead a cat and rat life but as social partners in national development. Let’s elevate our politics to a much higher level the way our friends in Kenya conduct their politics as President Uhuru Kenyatta sharing the same platform with an opposition leader Raila Odinga and several others thus should be our direction to heal the country because this country is deeply divided on regional and tribal lines in the last 20 years,” said Mtayachalo. “This is the reason why a new generation of African leaders must emerge and take radical reforms to build or strengthen strong and independent state institutions of good governance as that’s the only way we can fight corruption, nepotism, tribalism and under development. I was on the Copperbelt few days ago just to have a feel on how people are coping up with life under the new dawn government. However, I must be honest that what I found from the ground, that’s in Kitwe and Ndola, is not healthy as people are complaining bitterly for obvious reasons. The escalating prices of goods and services and as such many people cannot put food on their tables because the cost of basic needs had gone up to unmanageable levels even before the war in Ukraine broke out.”

President Hichilema eulogises Alexander Chikwanda

President Hakainde Hichilema has described the late former Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda as a resilient and focused man who served the nation with perseverance.

Mr. Hichilema said the late Mr Chikwanda, with his many other colleagues, were among the young people at that time who fought for the independence of Zambia and later on worked to improve various sectors such as health, infrastructure and education.

He said this when he visited the late Mr. Chikwanda’s funeral house in State Lodge in Lusaka yesterday.

President Hichilema noted that the late Mr. Chikwanda and others implemented various policies such as the free education policy up to university level, which benefited many Zambians.

He observed that young people must emulate the life of the late Mr. Chikwanda and ensure that they serve the public with all their very best ability at all times.

“He obviously started early as a youth in the struggle for independence and then went on to do many things for the country which many of us benefited from. He occupied key positions during the infancy in the building of our nation. Because of that, we thank him and his other colleagues, some of whom are gone by now,’’ said President Hichilema.

The Head of State added that the late Mr. Chikwanda was known not just inside Zambia but also abroad.

President Hichilema further said he shared a personal relationship with the late Mr. Chikwanda for a long time and served together in the Barclay Bank board.

“I found him there with his friends. He had that commercial economic side which was extremely good but he also had the social side which I knew for a long time,’’ he said.

He has since urged the general citizenry to mourn the late Mr. Chikwanda in a peaceful and respectful way.

‘’We wish the family our sincere condolences on the sad loss of Mr. Chikwanda and obviously he did a lot for this country and because of that we thank him for his work,’’ said Mr. Hichilema.

Mr. Chikwanda, 84, died on Tuesday May 3, 2022 in Lusaka after an illness. He served in various ministerial positions including that of Minister of Finance from 2011 to 2016. He will be put to rest tomorrow at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka.

It’s over for PF, says Bizwell Mutale

By Fanny Kalonda

BIZWELL Mutale says the new ‘recycled non-performing’ members of central committee appointed by acting PF president Given Lubinda has put the final nail in the coffin of the former ruling party.

“We are sinking. Too many lies and fake pretences in PF political stance. It’s over and will not return or exist ever again,” he says.
Mutale, who was PF member of the national mobilisation committee ahead of the 2021 general elections, accused Lubinda of wanting to destroy the party completely and send it into oblivion.
Lubinda recently announced new central committee members ahead of the party convention which has been received with mixed feelings from party members.

“The current central committee has been rejected and asked to step down to allow the party rebranding and gain the confidence of the PF members and members of the public,” Mutale told The Mast. “The most unacceptable behaviour that brought Patriotic Front party to lose election and booted out of the office, it has continued.”

He argued that the PF is not brandable adding that the same cartel that worked against the party in terms of segregation, tribalism, greed, infighting, selfishness, betrayal and regionalism has continued.

“I want to assist the acting deputy president Given Lubinda to confirm that Patriotic Front party under his leadership style it is time to pack the bags and stop dreaming for 2026. It will not be rebranded and revitalised in any form. The party has a lot of members that can turn it around 100 per cent but the cartel of destruction, the same cartel that operated towards the general election has continued,” Mutale charged. “There is nothing that has changed or that will change looking at the current situation in the Patriotic Front party. We are sinking. Too many lies and fake pretences in PF political stance. It’s over and will not return or exist ever again into a real-life. PF, it’s time to accept the reality and turn the new chapter, process it and move on game over.”

He said the PF needs to focus on being realistic by investing in growing members to rebuild the party around the country.
“… some were members of PF just fattening their stomachs at the expense of the deserving members of the PF. Talking rubbish and blackmailing people whom they don’t even know about and cheating the president while embezzling funds from him with false pretence. There are many reasons this PF party has got to this stage and it’s no longer rumours. It’s factual. There was an internal backstabbing and tribal alignment. Friends, pocket alignment in terms of operations resources and presidential appointments. This was highly controlled by the internal tribal cartel. The president [Edgar Lungu] did not have much power,” he charged. “I have followed the unfolding events of Patriotic Front members of central committee with serious concerns and interest. The culture of working relationship between the members of central committee and the Patriotic Front members and their party structures has completely been driven apart and ignored. …under his watch Hon Given Lubinda who was then, sitting as the member of central committee and national executive committee, the highest decisions making body for the entire PF party, failed to accept the failure of the entire MCC. And he chose to be a leader now proven to be disastrous and continued to drive the party in non-rebrand mood.”

Mutale said the feelings of general party members have been ignored.
“The grassroots members at this point don’t exist. Completely ignored. This is a repeat of the candidate adoption mistake. It was not a mistake, it’s a planned move,” said Mutale.

The self-touted “New Dawn” government which is practically anchored to giving new jobs to old retired legs, continues shunning and shunting the youthful “freedom fighters” in preference for retired ancients, making the acclaim for “new dawn” come out as “old sunset” and not new dawn as it were.

It’s 118 years after Colonel Panji Kaunda’s grandfather left Malawi in 1904 for then Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), President Hakainde Hichilema has sent him back to the land of his forefathers as Zambia’s Ambassador to Malawi.

Panji, 75, the country’s oldest affluent orphan, now becomes Ambassador to Malawi at the expense of loyal, expectant and hardworking UPND freedom fighters who desperately needed such appointment.

Panji has been fortunate to enjoy his father’s 27 years in power as Republican President until 1991, a chapter with the PF (deputy minister works and supply) when it reigned and now the ruling UPND government.

Panji Kaunda showed up in trousers this time round!

Retired old Panji, 75, has been rewarded at the expense of the youthful citizens who worked tirelessly for the UPND victory last August. Among many others, some of the notable UPND “freedom fighters” still shunned, shunted and forgotten about include journalist Kalani Muchima, Iron Lady – Ruth Dante and motivational speaker and entrepreneur, Mubita Nawa.

Without hesitation, I can vouch for my son Kalani Muchima who suffered personal house break ins on several occasions (and shifted from.one house to another in quest of elusive safety from political thugs) , lost several jobs on account of promoting UPND and HH including ducking bullets in his sojourn coverage of President Hakainde Hichilema. It would not be a bad idea to send my son Kalani to ZNBC after all. Minister of information and media, Honourable Chushi Kasanda is aware but I just wonder why she’s still not moving to make my son a happy freedom fighter too.

Eight months on, prominent and notable youthful freedom fighters rewarded so far include Pilato (Chama Fumba) and activist Laura Miti.

The appointment has not come as a surprise. Last year, in January, Col. Panji Kaunda issued frightening statement claiming that the August 2021 elections would be the bloodiest. This of course was made to appease then opposition leader of UPND, Hakainde Hichilema.

Panji, now 75 years is the oldest orphan to Zambia’s first Repuclican President, late Kenneth David Kaunda, fondly referred to as KK.

KK, was declared stateless between 1999 and 2000 by the MMD government given his parents’ Malawian heritage.

So, for Panji going to Malawi as Ambassador, he has simply gone to home of his forefathers.

His father, KK, left behind a rich history. Kenneth Kaunda was the first president of Zambia. He was born on 28 April 1924 at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali. (In what was then Northern Rhodesia.).

He was the youngest of eight children. His father was a Minister and teacher who had left Malawi in 1904 and his mother was the first African woman to teach in colonial Zambia. Initially, the young Kaunda followed in his mother’s footsteps, becoming boarding master and then headmaster at Lubwa Mission from 1943 to 1945.

He worked at Salisbury (which is now Harare), at the ‘Salisbury Bindura Mines’. In 1948 became a teacher in Mufulira, for the United Missions to the Copperbelt. But he soon began to show an active interest in politics. In 1949 he returned to Lubwa to become a part-time teacher, but resigned in 1951 and became Organising Secretary for Northern Rhodesia of the: ‘Northern Rhodesian African National Congress.’

In 1953 he moved to Lusaka, to take up the post of Secretary General. In 1958, Kaunda broke from the organisation and formed the Zambian Africa National Congress (ZANC).

In 1959, Kaunda broke away from the ANC and formed his own party, the Zambian National Congress (ZANC). ZANC was banned in March 1959 and in June, Kaunda was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, which he spent first in Lusaka then in Harare.

Kaunda was released in 1960 and elected president of the United National Independence Party, the successor to ZANC. He organised a civil disobedience campaign in Northern Province, the so called Cha-cha-cha campaign, which consisted of burning schools and blocking roads.

THE ABANDONED KING LEWANIKA UNIVERSITY IN MONGU

This is King Lewanika university which the PF government has built at a cost of K200 million in Mongu.

As can be seen, the PF regime was working very hard. The K200 million was released in 2016 as then minister of higher education Michael Kaingu Told the Daily Mail in March 2016)

King Lewanika University construction starts (DAILY MAIL 19 March 2016)

BY MUNIDE ZULU, Nkeyema

MINISTER of Higher Education Michael Kaingu says construction of King Lewanika University at a cost of K200 million will start next week.
Speaking during, at Munkuye Secondary School in Nkeyema, Dr Kaingu said President Lungu is expected to lay a foundation stone before the project starts.

He said funds have been allocated towards the construction of the university and that a contractor is already on site.
“Government will ensure it fulfils its promise of constructing a university in each province, he said.
Dr Kaingu also said Government would provide enough learning institutions through construction and upgrading of secondary schools.
He appealed to parents to allow their children to attend school.

“As Government fights early marriage, it has been observed that boys also stay away from school to herd cattle, which should not be the case, he said.

Dr Kaingu, who also paid a courtesy call on Nkeyema district commissioner Albetina Mwanamwalye, was briefed on several development projects taking place in the district.

Ms Mwanamwalye, however, expressed concern over some local contractors that are delaying progression of development projects.
But Dr Kaingu said it is disappointing that local contractors have continued giving problems despite Government’s effort to empower them.

ACC Doing A Fantastic Job To Embarrass And De-campaign President Hichilema – Nakacinda

ACC DOING A FANTASTIC JOB TO EMBARRASS AND DE-CAMPAIGN PRESIDENT HICHILEMA – NAKACINDA

…. as The Bulldozer finally gets released on bail.

Patriotic Front (PF) party Chairperson for Information and Publicity Raphael Nakacinda has said it is very unfortunate that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are doing a fantastic job to embarrass and de-campaign President Hakainde Hichilema.

This comes after the ACC objected to PF Kabushi Member of Parliament Hon Bowman Lusambo’s bail as they claimed that they needed to verify his sureties.

Addressing the media upon the release of the Kabushi Bulldozer today, Hon Nakacinda said the kind of abuse and persecution that Hon Lusambo has been subjected to is very unfortunate.

He said the action by the ACC was meant to victimize Hon Lusambo.

“We are glad and happy because our comrade has finally been released. It’s very unfortunate that the ACC are doing a fantastic job to embarrass and de-campaign President Hakainde Hichilema,” he said.

“The kind of abuse and persecution that Hon Bowman Lusambo has been subjected to is very unfortunate. The Court yesterday granted him bail. We have Honourable members who obviously are known that they are Honourable Members of Parliament but yesterday, we were told that ACC didn’t know these colleagues as members of Parliament and that therefore, they needed to undertake whatever they called verification process all meant to just victimize Hon Lusambo.”

PF Matero Member of Parliament Hon Miles Sampa and his Chama South counterpart, Hon Davison Mung’andu were yesterday brought before Court as the Kabushi lawmaker’s sureties

Meanwhile, Mandevu lawmaker Christopher Shakafuswa however replaced Sampa who is unwell and is by press time in hospital.

We Are In Trouble Maningi: UPND has NO economic plan, the only plan they have is the IMF Loan- Antonio Mwanza

WE ARE IN TROUBLE MANINGI

By Antonio Mourinho Mwanza

FINANCE and National Planning Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane says the IMF programme which is “likely to materialise in June will ensure stability in the exchange rate.”

Iyeeee uluse!!!

Does this Minister have a slightest idea of the fundamentals that determines the exchange rate?

First, in December, 2021, they lied that they had clinched the IMF deal.

Now in May, 2022, they are saying they are hoping that they will clinch the deal in June. Okay aba ndi anthu ONYENGA!!!

Back to the matter at hand let us give the Minister a bit of Grade 10 Commerce:

Bwana Minister, you won’t stabilise the KWACHA using the IMF Loan, the IMF Loan is for balance of payment. You need increased foreign exchange earnings NOT an IMF loan to stabilise the KWACHA.

The KWACHA just like any other medium of exchange responds to the market forces and the rule of supply and demand. The more dollars you make the stronger your KWACHA becomes. Simple. And the amount of dollars a country makes depends on the amount of its export earnings which, itself depends on the productivity of the economy.

Copper is our major foreign exchange earner and at a time that a tonne of copper is fetching for as high as $11 000, our muzungu anikonde government has decided to give Tax Holidays to transnational mining conglomerates. What a loss! How unpatriotic!

And today you are begging for a meagre $1.4 billion from IMF which will come (if at all it will come) in a period of 36 months when you can easily make $1.6 billion dollars from taxes from the mines which you have given a tax holiday.

Ba Minister, we have been through this road before, nothing good came out of the previous IMF deals under UNIP and MMD governments, it was just pain, loss of jobs and death.

You misled President Rupiah Banda, now you are Misleading President Sammy.

You are playing INKONOMICS, not ECONOMICS and it will end in tears. Unfortunately, it is the poor who will have to bear the harsh economic times that will come with your IMF conditionalities that you seem to be so excited about.

We said it, and we will say it again: UPND has NO economic plan, the only plan they have is the IMF Loan, unfortunately it is not the answer to our economic challenges.

Given Lubinda has the Constitutional authority to make appointments to the Central Committee of the Party – PF Chairperson for Legal

MCC Given Lubinda has the Constitutional authority to make appointments to the Central Committee of the Party – PF Chairperson for Legal

6th May, 2022

There has been a lot of debate lately among some members of the Patriotic Front and the general public, questioning whether the PF Acting President, Hon Given Lubinda has the power to appoint Members of Central Committee.

On behalf of the Patriotic Front we wish to state the position on the matter with the view to bring this debate to a closure;

ARTICLE 61 of the PF Constitution provides that:
“The President of the Party shall:
(f) Give instruction to any official or member of the Party;
(g) Empower any member of the Party to exercise any powers or specified functions on behalf of the President, Party or the Central Committee”

Following the tripartite elections of 12 August 202, the President of the party Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu in the exercise of the powers vested in him by the PF Constitution, delegated all the powers, including the power to appoint Members of the Central Committee and to run the Party in the meantime to the Acting President, Hon. Given Lubinda, in writing. On this basis Hon. Given Lubinda has the Constitutional authority to make appointments to the Central Committee of the Party.

  1. WHY HAS THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF CENTRAL COMMITTEE BEEN INCREASED FROM 54 TO 80

The Central Committee in its meeting of 4th March, 2022 resolved, in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Party to increase the number of Members of the Central Committee from 54 to 80 to ensure inclusivity and effective management of the Party affairs. This was done in accordance with Articles 68 and 69 of the Party Constitution which mandate the Central Committee to make Regulations and Standing Orders that can be enforced in the MEANWHILE.

Article 68 states that, “Party Regulations and Standing Orders may be made by the Central Committee in respect of any subject to facilitate the implementation of the provisions of the Constitution. Regulations and Standing Orders of the Party made by the Central Committee may be enforced in the MEANWHILE pending ratification by the National Council.”

  1. DOES THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE PARTY REGULATIONS

The Central Committee has the right to make changes to the Party Regulations and Rules such as increasing the number of Members of the Central Committee from 58 to 80. The Party Constitution does give Central Committee the powers to make such changes. Article 58 provides that the Central Committee has among other powers, the powers to:

“(I) initiate and approve changes in the Regulations and Rules of the Party;

(m) Take action which in the opinion of the Central Committee is in the best interest, security and development of the Party and the State”

  1. WHAT IS THE TENURE OF OFFICE FOR MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

According to Article 46 of the Constitution of the Patriotic Front, the tenure of office for Members of the Central Committee is five (5) years. On this basis the Current Committee will remain in office until 2026 when the Party will go to the next general conference to elect a new Central Committee. This will happen before the next Presidential and General Elections of 2026

We wish to emphasize and reiterate that the Acting President’s desire in appointing portfolio holders is to increase the number of members in decision making positions. It must be noted that since the last conference of the Party in 2021, only the Vice President, Deputy National Chairperson, Acting Secretary General and Chairman, Information have been appointed into their positions. This is the rationale and spirit with which the Acting President made the appointments. Consequently, any suggestions that the Acting President has an ulterior motive in making these appointments is simply false and utterly malicious and members and the public are urged to contemptuously ignore such a narrative

Further, Members of the Central Committee were invited to submit more names for consideration to be included into the Central Committee at its next meeting.

Members may also be interested to know that some of the names that are being floated in the media were actually mentioned in the last meeting and are currently being considered for appointment.

Now that all the questions that have been making rounds in the media have adequately been answered, we wish to call upon all members of the Party to let this matter lie and instead concentrate on the work of rebuilding and rebranding the Party in readiness for the 2026 general elections.

I thank you.

Garry Nkombo Given 48 Hours Ultimatum To Publish The 2022 CDF Approved Projects List As Mandated By The Zambian Law

NKOMBO TO BE PROSECUTED

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO COMMENCE LEGAL PROCEEDINGS IN THE HIGH COURT OF ZAMBIA AGAINST MR. GARRY NKOMBO-Minister of Local Government & Rural Development

Date: 06/05/2022

TO: MR. GARRY NKOMBO (yourself), MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT
FROM: THE ECONOMIC FREEDOM FIGHTERS-EFF Party

48 HOURS ULTIMATUM TO PUBLISH THE 2022 CDF APPROVED PROJECTS LIST ACCORDING TO ZAMBIAN LAW AND DEMAND TO END OF MR. GARRY NKOMBO’S CONTEMPTUOUS ILLEGALITIES AND MALADMINISTRATION OF THE K4 BILLION CONSTITUENCY DEVELOPMENT FUND (CDF) AS CONTAINED IN SEC 15 (1)(2)(3)(4) OF THE CDF ACT NO. 11 OF 2018 OF THE LAWS OF ZAMBIA.

In the defense of our young democracy, we hereto put on record that the Minister of Local Government (yourself) Mr. Garry Nkombo is in serious breach of the Law of Zambia and thus turned the ongoing working at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural development regarding the management of the K4.009 Billion (K25.7 million CDF per constituency) into an Illegality following your failure to follow the law at the lapse of the 30th April 2022 Statutory Deadline to publish an approved List of CDF projects for the 2022 budget. We hereby give you an ultimatum of 48 hours to publish the Approved CDF project List as mandated by the Zambian Law failure to which we will seek legal redress in the High Court of Zambia.

Our submission is prompted by (yourself) the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Garry Nkombo’s reckless and blatant disregard for the Zambian Law contained in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Sec 15(1)(2)(3)(4).

The Minister (yourself) is in contempt of the Zambian Law as contained in the Constituency Development Fund -CDF Act No. 11 of 2018 of the Laws of Zambia on the following grounds:

1. FAILURE to publish a LIST of APPROVED PROJECTS under the CDF following the Statutory deadline that fell on 30th April 2022.

The Zambia law is clear and explicit in guiding that:

1. Sec(15)(1): a Committee shall submit to the Minister a proposed project list and the estimated costs of the proposed projects before the end of the month of March in each year in the prescribed manner and form to ensure timely release of funds.

2. Sec(15)(2):The Minister shall ensure that the projects on the proposed project list comply with the provisions of this Act.

3. Sec(15)(3): Subject to subsection (2), the Minister shall approve a proposed project list within thirty days of receipt of the proposed project list.

4. Sec(15)( (4): The Minister shall, on approval, publish in the Gazette, the project list.

As Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, we are aggrieved and concerned that following the Statutory deadline of 30th April 2022 to publish an approved CDF Project list of the 2022 budget , the said Minister (yourself), Mr. Garry Nkombo, has acted ultravires to CDF Sec(15)(3) and Sec(15)(4) by:

1. Not approving a proposed project list within thirty days of receipt of the proposed project list according to CDF Act Sec(15)(3)
2. Not publishing in the Gazette, the approved project list according to CDF Act (15)(4)

In following with the aforementioned grounds, we hereby give you an ultimatum of 48 hours to publish the Approved project List as mandated by the Zambian Law failure to which we will seek legal redress in the High Court of Zambia. We fear that the Minister (yourself) is operating outside the Zambian Law and hence all subsequent dealings beyond this deadline are shroud in illegality and procedural impropriety. This is a serious assault on the rule of law and thus we will be seeking the indulgence of the Judiciary to help arrest and remedy this blatant abuse of power by yourself.

Alexander Bwalya Chikwanda aka ABC (1937-2022)

By Miles Sampa

Alexander Bwalya Chikwanda aka ABC (1937-2022)
#final part 2.
4 minutes long.

1.0 Preable
Michael Chilufya Sata-MCS (MHSRIEP) won in 2011 and made ABC his Finance Minister. “He sacrificed his retirement to help us run government”. MCS once told me .

2.0 Deputy Minister to ABC
In 2012, I was the provincial Minister for Southern Province enjoying my role there only to hear on news that I had been transferred to be the deputy to ABC at the Ministry of Finance (MOF). I would later learn that Minister ABC requested for my transfer to under study him as he had not wished to stay in government beyond the first term.

Very particular with grammar and pronunciations. Once when I copied him in my letter that had a coma in a wrong place, he walked over to my office to ask me to edit same and never to sign secretary typed letters if had errors as it was my name at stake. He would correct me that it’s not pronounced spaghetti bolognese but spaghetti ‘boronye’ and it’s not croissant but ‘Kwasha’ or so he sounded to say. Lol.

He would on every working day take me and other MOF Directors for lunch. I had always thought red wine was bitter (same as impwa) but these lunches graduated me into acquiring a very sweet taste inside the same ‘bitter’ dry wine. ‘Ndifai’ or ‘utwalekanaleka’.

Every so often he would receive dividends from his various historical shareholding in companies like Apollo farms. When that happens, he would share some petty cash end of the week ‘for your children from my dividing just received from ba Apollo’. His consequent deputy Ministers namely Keith Mukata and Chris Mvunga also attest to a similar treat.

Not only me but all workers around him at MOF would get daily inquiries on how our parents, wives or children were doing. If not well, he would intervene in one way or another. Had huge measure of empathy.

We however differed quiet often not on personal but work related topics.
Once I wrote a letter direct to State House to express concern on some MOF policy related decisions. As I was a ‘Kapyopyo’ (public service inexperience )to them, President Sata redirected the letter to my Minister ABC and whom I was disagreeing with in that letter. How embarrassing it was for me when ABC handed the letter back to me. I wrote another letter to MCS asking him to transfer me out of MOF. Again the following day my Minister ABC walked into my office and gave me back the letter.

Sooner we were out for lunch and all normal like there wasn’t some ‘return to sender’ letter. We were laughing in no time. “Twachilakwamba naba nokolume” ( the President and I were joking about you). He said you voted in Parliament against a government collective stance and has written to you to explain why. “Public service is very different from the private sector or banking world you came from Bwalya. Government works like a goods train”.

I look back and wonder where I was getting all the nerve to disagree with both. Well first both were very easy going people to be alongside and they took by the chin professional work disagreements. Never came inbetween our strong personal bond over years. I would however get moved in 2013 to the Ministry of Commerce,Trade & Industry.

3.0 Sata Dies
Sata would die in 2014 and as the Bembas would say..” chauma umupini..” (things fall apart).
Fortunately ABC would remain the senior guru of PF and would in coming years look out for about all MCCs, MPs, Mayor, Councillors and majority general membership. A day before my wedding in 2020, ABC drove himself to my house for the first time to deliver cases of ‘French Red Wine’ for guests and apologized he would not make it to the event due to his back problem at the time. Very courteous he was.

4.0 Last Encounter with ABC
About 2 months ago, heard from one of his children that he had been asking for my latest phone number as he had failed to reach me. I called him and asked how he was doing.

“I have been waiting for you to come for a while now. You don’t know that some of us are in departure lounge. Come we talk about our party and politics”. I drove instant to his home.

Found him watching TV with Mrs Chikwanda most call baMama. We locked foreheads the KK way which was our usual greeting gesture from the time he was my Minister. In no time he brought out of his renown cella a good bottle French red wine for me and his other guests present.
As usual he would first explain the wine name history, vineyard and class. Unlike his classy peers ABM, DAP and others who were into fine single malt whiskeys, ABC was a seasoned wine connoisseur or sommelier.

Within no time our chat was into politics and the country in general for a good 2 hours or so. He about summarized to me what he thought about most prominent politicians especially within and outside PF. He was generally either pro or against any person leadership qualities and would explain why. He was a good reader of personalities and never sugar coated. No; he said zero about me this last meeting and guess because he could not critic me in my presence.

Two hours later I bid farewell and he kept asking me to stay on. As usual to all his guests, he walked me to the Carpark and waited at the door for the wave as until I drive off.
‘Bye bye ba Shikulu’ I said through my open car window as I left.

As I got home he called and said “just wanted to check if you arrived home Bashi Emma”
I thought it was a priceless madaala etiquette that this generation does not have.

Two days later would hear of his stroke that would have him in and out of hospital for several weeks . Turns out him asking to see him that night was to have the last (Biblical) meal and wine together. The bye bye waving as I drove off was the last ever.

5.0 Conclusion
A very wise man he was. My only regret and same as I have over Michael Sata is that I did not ask them a lot more questions that did so as to have learnt much more from their enormous life experience and wisdom. All the same I count myself very lucky to have rubbed shoulders not only with ABC, MCS, ABM and DAP . These were (VJ still) in a class of their own. Very exposed globally and almost in all districts of Zambia. Priceless knowledge I picked up from their minds. This generation of immense real life practical thinkers and people problem solvers is just about becoming extinct.

Here lays ABC a man that majority people that were lucky to encounter him in person, each grew to receive his love unconditionally in thick or thin.

So long Sir ABC. MYSRIEP🙏🏽
