Khaby Lame is 2024’s most-followed TikToker

Senegalese-Italian TikToker Khaby Lame is the most followed content creator on the platform in the first half of 2024, according to Forbes Africa. He has over 162 million followers, with influencer Charlie D’Amelio following closely with over 155 followers.

Lame has been the most followed TikToker since 2022 when he passed D’Amelio, who was known for her dancing videos before becoming a fashion and lifestyle influencer. Lame has added about 2 million followers on TikTok since last July, however, American influencer D’Amelio has added about 4.3 million, and that is helping her close the gap, Forbes Africa reported.

The following are the top 5 most followed TikTokers as of June 30:

Khaby Lame: 162,600,000
Charli D’Amelio: 155,400,000
MrBeast: 96,900,000
Bella Poarch: 94,200,000
Addison Rae: 88,800,000
Before becoming a content creator, Lame worked as an industrial worker in Chivasso, Northern Italy. However, when pandemic struck, he became one of the many people who got laid off worldwide as a result of the impact of the contagion on businesses and the global economy.

While at home during the pandemic lockdown, he took to TikTok and spent several hours posting comedy clips on social media platforms and the clips soon went viral. His most-watched video came to have over 158 million views. The clip mocks a fellow TikToker who cut himself free from a car door shearing through his T-shirt. Lame makes the same video but instead of reaching for scissors to cut himself free, he simply opens the door to free himself and shrugs.

His rise on the social media platform has been entirely organic and his videos lack a professional touch compared to other famous TikTok stars, some of whom have been approached by Hollywood. His content turns to mock or debunks overproduced content across multiple social media platforms.

By the end of 2022, Lame emerged as the most-followed person on TikTok with over 160 million followers, propelling him to stardom as one of the most influential black people in the world.

Lame, who now has a social media following of over 250 million, amassed $16.5 million in earnings in 2022, Face2Face Africa reported in 2023, making him one of the highest-paid content creators in the world. At the time, his earnings put him in 11th position on Forbes’ roster of the world’s leading creators.

A chunk of his income comes from multiple endorsement deals with some of the world’s most renowned brands. Prior to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, he was named as a World Cup ambassador for the largest financial institution in Africa and the Middle East, Qatar National Bank (QNB).

Also, he was signed by Binance, the world’s largest platform for buying and selling cryptocurrencies, as a brand ambassador to use his signature style to tackle some of the misperceptions around Web3 and also partner on exclusive NFT collections with Binance.

In addition, he has partnerships deals with soccer club PSG and fashion house Hugo Boss. Lame will star in campaigns surrounding Hugo Boss’ re-brand, and will also co-design a capsule collection with the fashion label as part of a multi-year pact, Peopleofcolourintech reported in February 2022.

Last month, media company Group Black and American multinational consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble (P&G) collaborated with Lame for a series, “Khaby Is Coming To America“.

Man told he wasn’t British after living in UK for 50 years granted indefinite leave to stay

0

retired shopkeeper, Nelson Shardey, who faced the threat of deportation despite residing in the UK for nearly five decades, has been granted indefinite leave to remain by the Home Office. Shardey, 74, moved to Britain from Ghana as a student in 1977 and settled in Wallasey, Wirral.

In 2019, he was informed he had no right to live in the UK. The government has now acknowledged his situation as “exceptional” and allowed him to stay permanently, according to the BBC. Shardey’s family has announced that over £48,000 ($61,000) raised for his legal battle will be donated to charity.

Shardey, who arrived in the UK on a student visa, could not get his parents to pay his fees due to a coup in Ghana. He worked various jobs, including making Mother’s Pride bread, Kipling’s Cakes near Southampton, and Bendick’s Chocolate in Winchester.

Throughout his time in the UK, his right to live and work was never questioned. Shardey, who married twice to British women and fathered two sons, ran a newsagent called Nelson’s News in Wallasey. He has never left the UK, considering it his home. In 2007, he received a police award for bravery after confronting a robber attacking a delivery man with a baseball bat.

In 2019, he discovered however that he was not considered a British citizen when he applied for a passport to visit Ghana after his mother’s death. He was advised to pursue a costly 10-year route to settlement, totaling £17,500. Desperate over the expense, Shardey’s case against the Home Office highlighted his long residency, bravery award, and community service, arguing for exceptional treatment.

The Home Office said it had exercised its discretion under the Immigration Act to grant Shardey indefinite leave to remain outside standard immigration rules, waiving the application fee.

Shardey said he was “overwhelmed, very very happy and relieved”.

“I would like to thank everybody who believed in us and supported us in words and donations,” he said.

Shardey added that while the “battle” was won, he and his supporters “hope to win the war, for the authorities to agree that the 10-year route is inhuman and abolish it or shorten it”.

Nicola Burgess, Shardey’s lawyer from the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit, expressed her delight at the Home Office’s decision to grant him indefinite leave to remain.

“Nelson’s bravery in the face of dysfunctional immigration system has been inspirational,” said Burgess. She urged the new government to simplify the system to avoid “many more” Shardey being forced into “an endless cycle of applications, bureaucracy and expensive fees”.

Shardey’s sons, Aaron and Jacob, said his victory “means the absolute world to us”.

“We are so grateful to our legal team… and everyone who supported us… from sharing our story to donating, we cannot thank you enough,” they added.

The Shardey family plans to donate raised funds to The Boaz Trust, Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, and Wirral Foodbank.

A Home Office spokesperson confirmed they are collaborating with Shardey to finalize his application for indefinite leave to remain.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and distress caused,” the spokesperson added.

Ten Hag labels new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy as “a man of character”

0

Erik ten Hag is optimistic that Ruud van Nistelrooy will bring a touch of “Manchester United DNA” back to Old Trafford in his return as an assistant coach.

Van Nistelrooy’s comeback is part of a broader restructuring aimed at propelling the club forward in the coming seasons. Alongside Van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag has appointed Rene Hake to the coaching staff.

Both have signed two-year contracts, replacing Benni McCarthy and Mitchell van der Gaag. This marks Van Nistelrooy’s return to Old Trafford after 18 years, while Hake joins from his previous role at Go Ahead Eagles.

Van Nistelrooy’s coaching career has been characterized by steady progression. After retiring from professional play in 2012, he transitioned to coaching in 2013. His journey included stints with PSV Eindhoven’s Under-19 and Under-21 teams, culminating in success with the first team by winning the KNVB Cup in 2023.

Despite interest from other clubs such as Burnley and Leicester City, Van Nistelrooy opted to join Ten Hag at United, underscoring his dedication to the club where he made his mark as a player.

Ten Hag has expressed full confidence in Van Nistelrooy’s coaching acumen and personal qualities.

“First of all, his character has brought him so far and it’s an example for everyone here in the building,” Ten Hag said.

“Of course, he will also bring some DNA of Manchester United in, but that character is such a strong driver and that is also what he shows as a coach. He has such a highly interesting profile, he’s so ambitious, he has the skills and he already has a lot of experience.

“He’s assisted the Dutch squad, in PSV he did the Under-19s as a manager, he did the Under-21s, Jong PSV, who were playing at the second level and then he was manager of the first team. So much experience, but very young, very ambitious, and very driven. With his skills and his intelligence, he will help all the players and the team.”

Meanwhile, Hake’s addition also highlights his extensive professional bond with Ten Hag, forged nearly two decades ago during their tenure at Twente. Hake’s recent accomplishments with Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie further underscore his qualifications.

His deep understanding of Ten Hag’s methodologies and principles is poised to facilitate the seamless integration of fresh tactics at United.

These new appointments promise an exciting season ahead for Manchester United supporters. Ten Hag’s initiative to revitalize the coaching staff aims to usher in a new era of triumph at Old Trafford.

The return of an esteemed figure like Van Nistelrooy not only evokes nostalgia but also strategically aims to motivate and propel the current squad toward greater heights.

Ivorians suspects Ukraine influence in recent military recruitment in Côte d’Ivoire

0

Following the return of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara from the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, a number of posters advertising recruitment into a foreign army appeared in the streets of Côte d’Ivoire.

Some Internet users think that this recruitment is being carried out by the recently opened Ukrainian embassy in Abidjan, with the authorization of the local authorities.

The recruitment of African fighters is causing controversy in the media. The citizens of Abidjan have expressed their disappointment with the authorities who approved the recruitment. Some people equate the move to human trafficking.

The population is also questioning the imperial silence of the authorities over the dissemination of such information.

“Ouattara is France’s best pupil. He’ll let it happen,” an internet user shared on his page, highlighting the close cooperation between France and Côte d’Ivoire in supporting Ukraine.

Kouamé Gilson, a political activist from Côte d’Ivoire, expressed his concerns on social networks: “The choice of our country is not random; it has already been done in Senegal two years ago. At the moment, the only country at war that can recruit is Ukraine, and even if it isn’t made explicit, it’s our authorities who accept such things. Can you imagine our compatriots going to the Ukrainian front line to die for a problem that doesn’t concern Africa? We are certain that this is what they decided at the peace summit held in Switzerland,” he added.

The Kiev authorities had already carried out a similar exercise two years earlier in Senegal without prior agreement from the Dakar authorities.

The Senegalese Minister of Foreign Affairs was quick to react to this unprecedented situation: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad learned, with astonishment, on March 3, 2022, from the Facebook page of the Embassy of the Republic of Ukraine in Dakar, about an appeal to foreign citizens to come to the aid of Ukraine, with a registration form in support.”

So why is Côte d’Ivoire in the firing line this time? It should be remembered that the position of the President of Côte d’Ivoire in this conflict aligns with that of Western countries: “Kiev’s victory or nothing.” Most African countries, on the other hand, have adopted a neutral stance and refuse to be manipulated.

“The recruitment of mercenary fighters in Africa could involve the citizens of neighboring countries, which could damage relations between African states,” worry some of the region’s political leaders.

Several Internet users are pointing the finger at the Ukrainian authorities, recalling that last January, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his desire to send Africans to the Ukrainian front, which no doubt caused his Western partners to react. To disguise the role of Paris in this intention, the Ukrainian leader could recruit through his embassy.

The Côte d’Ivoire authorities should seriously consider this situation, which endangers the lives of African citizens. Ukraine’s conflict with its neighbor does not concern African countries. Preserving the lives of citizens is the major role of every leader.

Nancy Pelosi is reportedly concerned about chances of Joe Biden beating Donald Trump

0

Nancy Pelosi is reportedly concerned about chances of Joe Biden beating Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

The former Speaker of the House is said to have been working with some House Democrats to try and come up with a plan to make Biden reconsider and step down as the party’s nominee heading into November.

One Democrat lawmaker anonymously described her as ‘very concerned’ about Biden and not necessarily making it clear that ‘we’re sticking with [Biden]’.

Another said Pelosi’s message was: ‘The stakes are so high. We can’t afford to do anything but have our best possible opportunity to win’.

She’s reportedly concerned that the Biden campaign’s response to the disastrous debate in Atlanta that began this controversy two weeks ago was not ‘an honest reckoning’ or ‘an objective analysis’.

Another anonymous Democrat said: ‘It’s very clear that she doesn’t think that this matter is settled and that Joe Biden’s statement – ‘I’m running; shut up’ – she said, ‘No, we’re still talking about this.’

Pelosi is rumored to be representing members who feel Biden continuing in the race is being ‘rammed down their throats’.

‘Team Biden made it clear what their strategy was: ignore the problem, run out the clock, and force the rest of us to live with it,’ said Adam Smith of Washington, who called on Biden to drop out.

A spokesperson for Pelosi told The Hill a similar message to the one she delivered on MSNBC Wednesday.

‘Speaker Pelosi fully supports whatever President Biden decides to do. We must turn our attention to why this race is so important: Donald Trump would be a disaster for our country and our democracy,’ Ian Krager said.

Asked if Biden has her support on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the former speaker said: ‘It’s up to the president to decide if he’s going to run. We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running out.’

Reminded that Biden has made up his mind, Pelosi said: ‘I want him to do whatever he decides to do.’

‘Whatever he decides, we go with.’

Biden wrote in a letter to hill Democrats on Tuesday: ‘I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.’

Two French rugby stars accused of r@ping a woman at least seven times

A woman was allegedly r@ped at least seven times by two French rugby players, Hugo Auradou, 20, and Oscar Jegou, 21, her lawyers has claimed.

Two French rugby stars accused of r@ping a woman at least seven times and leaving her with bite marks and injuries to her bre@sts
The 39-year-old Argentinian woman was left with bite marks and injuries to her bre@sts in the attack in a hotel room in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, according to her lawyer Natacha Romano.

French international rugby players Hugo Auradou, 20, and Oscar Jegou, 21, were arrested on r@pe and ass@ult charges in Buenos Aires on Monday.

They have denied the accusation, and say s3xual relations with the woman were consensual. The players were transferred from Interpol’s Buenos Aires headquarters to Mendoza on Thursday, where they are expected to be formally charged today.

Two French rugby stars accused of r@ping a woman at least seven times and leaving her with bite marks and injuries to her bre@sts

Romano said her client was hospitalised on Thursday after feeling ill emotionally and physically ‘because of everything that happened.’

She said earlier that the woman had suffered ‘fierce’ violence at the hands of her assailants in a hotel room, with injuries to her face, back, breasts, legs, and ribs as well as various bite and scratch marks.

The alleged victim claims to have been r@ped ‘at least six times’ by one of the men and once by the other, according to the lawyer. She allegedly tried to escape several times.

Psychologist Nicolas Yungman, who was not treating the woman, told local media that her symptoms, as described, could be indicative of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The woman will receive treatment at a health facility for 24 to 48 hours, Romano said on Thursday.

Auradou and Jegou spent last night at a police detention unit and be brought before prosecutor Cecilia Bignert at 9am local time (12pm GMT) on Friday, Martin Ahumada, a spokesman for the Mendoza prosecutor’s office said.

Upon being charged, the pair could be ordered to be held until a hearing 10 days later to determine whether they will have to await trial in custody.

Within the 10 days, the pair could bring an application to be released on probation or under house arrest, according to Ahumada.

The sentence for s3xual assault in Argentina ranges from six to 15 years, according to the penal code. The penalty can increase to 20 years in the case of two aggressors.

The accusations, which have left French rugby reeling and dominated news headlines in Argentina, came during a tour of South America by the French national squad.

The alleged attack took place Saturday night at the Diplomatic Hotel in Mendoza, where France’s players and staff were staying after beating Argentina in a test match.

Romano said the woman had gone with one of the men from a nightclub to a hotel room, where she alleges she was held against her will and abused for several hours.

‘The violence was fierce,’ said Romano. ‘There is more than one crime to investigate.’

Lawyer Rafael Cuneo Libarona, who represents the players, arrived in Mendoza on Wednesday and said ‘s3xual relations’ had been ‘consensual.’

‘There are witnesses who saw her leave (the hotel), there are cameras that saw her leave, apparently, no injuries are seen in the footage,’ Libarona – who is the brother of the country’s justice minister Mariano Cuneo Libarona – told journalists.

Romano said ‘the overwhelming proof that there was no consent is the victim’s body’ and the wounds she bears.

If the men are charged, the lawyer added, she would ask the court to remand them in pre-trial custody.

The charge, said Romano, should be r@pe with the use of violence.

French Rugby Federation (FFR) president Florian Grill, who is in Argentina, said the players have ‘a quite different version’ of events to that of the woman, with ‘a lot of inconsistencies.’

‘We are not judges, we are not investigators, but we think that the Argentine justice system should look at the case very quickly,’ he said.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have publicly listed their Beverly Hills marital home for sale amid rumours of an imminent divorce

0

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have publicly listed their Beverly Hills marital home for sale amid rumours of an imminent divorce between the celebrity couple.

The couple bought the property last year for $ 60.85 million after two years of house hunting in Los Angeles’ most expensive neighbourhoods.

Amid speculation of a split, Jennifer and Ben attempted to quietly offload the 12-bedroom, 24-bathroom mansion for $65million in June. But they failed to find a buyer and have now listed the property publicly on the MLS system for a whopping $ 68 million, as reported by TMZ.

The new listing claims that the 38,000-square-foot abode was renovated within the last four months – which may explain the $ 3 million price hike.

The renovations and improvements to the home were reportedly completed in the last four months.

TMZ also noted that California’s mansion tax – an extra transfer tax applied to home sales over $ 5 million, may also be a factor in price.

For homes sold for $ 10 million and above, an extra 5.5% charge is applied to the sale.

Bennifer’s listing is being held by Santiago Arana of The Agency, the real estate brokerage owned by reality TV star Mauricio Umansky.

The home is now listed as ‘for sale’ on Zillow at the reported $68million price point.

Jennifer and Ben have reportedly been living apart for ‘months’ amid speculation that they’re headed for divorce.

Ben, who is still wearing his wedding ring, has been residing in a $100,000-per-month rental home near his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, 52.

He was reportedly seen moving his belongings out of the Beverly Hills house that he once shared with Lopez in late June, as per PEOPLE.

‘Ben continues to live at the Brentwood rental. He’s been there for about two months now,’ a source told the outlet at the time.

‘He seems okay. He’s been at his office every day and seems focused on work. He’s also spending time with his kids.’

A source previously dished to PEOPLE: ‘Ben never liked the house. It’s too far away from his kids.’

The Gone Girl star co-parents his three children Samuel, 12, Fin, 15, and Violet, 18, with his ex-wife Garner, who lives in the Pacific Palisades.

Meanwhile, Lopez, who shares 16-year-old twins Emme and Max from a prior marriage to Marc Anthony, feels the 12-bedroom house is simply ‘way too big for her.’

Six severely mut!lated bodies of women wrapped in polythene bags have been found at an abandoned quarry

Six severely mut!lated bodies of women wrapped in polythene bags have been found at an abandoned quarry used as a dumpsite in Kware near Mukuru kwa Njenga in Nairobi, Kenya.

The grim discovery made on Friday morning, July 12, 2024 has sent shockwaves through Mukuru kwa Njenga slums and beyond.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Citizen Digital, the bodies had visible injuries and had been tied with ropes.

The eyewitness called on the government to investigate the killings to determine what happened to the women who are yet to be positively identified

“A woman came and told me that she dreamt of the whereabouts of her missing sister and wanted us to go and retrieve her body. We doubted her at first and as we approached the scene, spotted a wrapped polythene bag,” said the eyewitness.

“Upon examining the area, we found several bodies wrapped in the polythene bags with some being cut into pieces and tied with ropes. If they lived nearby, we would have heard of the reports which means that these bodies were transferred to this location. We want the government to investigate this matter.”

Police officers arrived and cordoned off the area.

The bodies were transferred to City Mortuary as the search gets underway to positively identify them.

Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo called for police to investigate the matter to establish what transpired.

“We need investigations to be done! Unacceptable,” she said.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement, confirmed that six bodies have been retrieved from the abandoned quarry.

The DCI said that all six bodies were females and had been killed in the same mode.

The Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, said the bodies were severely mutilated and were in various stages of decomposition

“Earlier today at approximately 1100hrs, the Embakasi Division Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) responded to an urgent call from the public in the Villa area of Mukuru kwa Njenga,” Amin said.

“The alarm was raised following the discovery of six severely mutilated bodies, all female, in various stages of decomposition.”

He said the bodies were wrapped in nylon papers and reinforced with nylon ropes.

“The discovery was made at an abandoned quarry, currently filled with water and used as a dump site,”

Amin added that the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel from Embakasi quickly arrived at the scene, retrieving the bodies and documenting the area.

“The bodies have been transported to the Nairobi Funeral Home (City Mortuary) to await postmortem.

“Homicide detectives and officers from the Forensics Division of the DCI are currently analysing samples to identify the bodies,” he added.

The area has been cordoned off and designated as a crime scene as the investigation continues.

Amin called on Kenyans to cooperate with the authorities as investigations continue as probe continues.

Judge rules Tyreek Hill is the father of baby girl born in 2023, bringing his total to 3 babies born in 1-year by three different women

0

A Florida court has declared serial baby daddy Tyreek Hill the father of a baby girl born in 2023, bringing his unofficial roster of kids to seven with the NFL star expecting another child.

The Miami Dolphins wide receiver, 30, and his wellness influencer wife Keeta Vaccaro, 28, are currently expecting a baby, their first together.

Judge rules NFL star Tyreek Hill is the father of baby girl born in 2023, bringing his total to 3 babies born in 1-year by three different women

A Broward County judge ruled this week that the eight-time Pro Bowler is the father of Trae Love Hill, born on May 2 last year.

The child’s mom Kimberly Kaylee Baker, 30, filed a paternity suit that same month claiming the newborn was conceived during an August 2022 hook-up with Hill.

Kimberly K claimed she was receiving $2,500 from him each month but estimated the real cost of caring for their daughter was closer to $10,000.

‘The father has in fact demonstrated utter and abject unconcern for the child in wholly failing to act as a parent and is completely failing to support the child,’ Baker’s petition alleged.

Hill didn’t contest the results of a DNA test but argued unsuccessfully that California-based Baker had no grounds to file for paternity in Florida, where he lives and works.

A court order published this week confirmed the pair reached a confidential paternity agreement backed by the signing of an NDA (non-disclosure order).

‘The respondent is the natural and biological father of the child,’ the document confirms.

Hill is already paying $13,500 in monthly child support for his three kids with former fiancée Crystal Espinal.

In a separate Broward County paternity suit filed last year, he was declared the dad of Soul Corazon Hill, born in February 2023.

The boy’s mom, Brittany Lackner, 30, said his initial offer of $2,500-a-month was ‘woefully inadequate’ for someone on a $30million salary before the pair reached a confidential deal.

Camille Valmon, 33, confirmed to DailyMail last year that Hill was also the father of her son Tyreek Hill Jr., born March 2023, insisting: ‘He is a great father not only to our son but to all of his children.’

In an April interview with the ‘Million Dollaz Worth Of Game’ YouTube channel, it was put to Hill that he had as many as 10 kids.

He didn’t confirm, nor deny the tally but instead insisted: ‘It don’t matter how many kids I have. A lot of people won’t be able to say Tyreek don’t take care of his kids though.’

New mum sues medical practitioners for misleading her as she shares struggles after changing gender as a teen

0

A woman, who transitioned into a man when she was still a teenager, has shared her regrets while detailing its effects on her body as she transitions back to her original gender and welcomes a child.

On June 3, 2024, Prisha Mosley, 26 gave birth to a healthy baby boy via C-section.

What is remarkable is that until about two years ago, Mosley identified as a man.

“No one told me the truth” New mum sues medical practitioners for misleading her as she shares struggles after changing gender as a teen

In her attempt to change genders, she pumped her body full of testosterone.

At 18, Mosley, who was born female, had her healthy breasts removed and was left with a mangled and scarred chest.

“No one told me the truth” New mum sues medical practitioners for misleading her as she shares struggles after changing gender as a teen

Sadly, the procedure has messed up her hormones, making her suffer greatly.

When Mosely, who has detransitioned, saw a doctor because she missed her period, she laughed when he asked if she could be carrying a child. Though, she was in a relationship with her boyfriend, she assumed she was infertile due to the procedures she subjected her body to when transitioning to a man.

“I still can’t believe I got pregnant,” she told writer Kirsten Fleming. “And I still can’t believe he’s healthy.”

Sadly, motherhood came with a myriad of complications and medical issues.

“No one told me the truth” New mum sues medical practitioners for misleading her as she shares struggles after changing gender as a teen

Mosley is in unchartered waters, being the first of a small group of detransitioning women who become mothers.

Medical interventions such as cross sex hormones can affect fertility, and Mosley started using testosterone when she was still developing.

“Every single thing that happens with the female body, especially when they are carrying and birthing a baby, has a purpose,” said Mosley, adding that her body’s mechanisms were greatly affected by testosterone.

As a young teen, Prisha Mosley was sexually assaulted. She was anorexic and suffering from mental health distress, but she was convinced by trans activists and therapists that she was transgender so she decided to transition.

After being experimented on by doctors under the guise of “gender-affirming care,” she’s now sharing raw, intimate details about her unexpected but very fraught path to motherhood.

“I could go on and on how tremendous that weight is,” Mosely, who is now an Independent Women’s Forum Ambassador, said of speaking out.

“But what’s worse is that it can happen to other people. The pain of imagining that someone else could feel or experience what I am experiencing makes the pain of being a public case study numb. It doesn’t compare. No one came and saved me when I was little. No one told me the truth.”

Mosely said she now knows the truth and it hurts.

Her body has been ravaged. She says her liver is big, her insulin is high. Her uterus, bladder and vagina atrophied. Her hormone imbalance caused the baby to be big, and her hips were too small to deliver vaginally.

She explained: “My muscles were used to carry a baby in ways that my hips couldn’t accommodate. I am in so much pain.”

She notes that there is no standard of care for detransitioners.

In a short Kelsey Bolar documentary, “Prisha Mosley: A Detransitioner’s Pregnancy Journey”, Mosley said doctors simply don’t know how to treat her.

“It’s not good news, but it’s honest news,” Mosley said, adding her previous doctors and therapists who treated her for gender dysphoria were “so sure [in removing her breasts and pumping her with testosterone]. It was promise. I fully believed it because I needed to. I didn’t transition because I was having a good time. There was no neuroscience to change my brain, so I had to edit my body.”

Mosley’s gender confusion started at a young age when she discovered gender ideology online. She was suffering from severe anorexia, anxiety and borderline personality disorder and reeling from a sexual assault at 15, which resulted in pregnancy and a miscarriage.

Her eating disorder affected her emotional maturation and physical growth, specifically in her hip area.

“No one told me the truth” New mum sues medical practitioners for misleading her as she shares struggles after changing gender as a teen

At 15, she socially transitioned to male and at 17 she started testosterone injections. A year later she had a double mastectomy, performed by a plastic surgeon in North Carolina.

After living as a man in the trans community for a few years, she realized, in therapy, that gender was not her issue.

She detransitioned and is now suing eight of her medical practitioners, alleging they misled her into pursuing medical procedures and interventions that have turned her into a patient for life.

Mosley is particularly haunted by removing her breasts. She now has painful “rocks” that have formed under her chest, or what her doctor says are milk masses stuck under scar tissue with no outlet because her nipples were reattached and are merely, “decorative.

My doctor said some breast tissue was not removed and I have milk coming in as a response to prolactin.”

Instead of a soft pillow for her baby, her chest is hard.

“It makes me feel like a monster. I put him on my chest and I don’t feel him.”

Mosley relies on donor breast milk, which she says has been integral to her son’s development. “He spent the first few days of his life searching for things on my chest that don’t exist. All he did was throw up. The only thing that stopped it was the donor breast milk,” she said.

Mosely, who is also helping to raise her boyfriend’s daughter, said she would love to have more kids.

“But it’s also reasonable to think I can’t survive another pregnancy,” she added.

She describes motherhood as physical agony but emotionally fulfilling, adding that it has brought unexpected healing.

“I had to become a home for someone else to let my body become a home for me,” said.

PF Members of Parliament Join the Gen Zed Youth Protest

0

July 10, 2024

Several Patriotic Front (PF) Members of Parliament joined the Gen Zed Youth Protest, primarily organized by young Zambians to address a range of pressing issues affecting the country. Led by the leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Brian Mundubile, the MPs showed solidarity with the youth, highlighting their shared demands for better living conditions and government accountability.

The protest has focused on the following key issues:

  • High cost of living
  • Exorbitant fuel prices
  • Historic load shedding
  • Police brutality
  • Expulsion of 9 members of Parliament
  • Rampant unemployment
  • Corruption
  • Tax holidays for mines
  • K13.3 billion externalized
  • 10 million people facing hunger
  • Skyrocketing bus fares
  • Record-high bread prices
  • Mealie meal costing K400

The MPs emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of Zambia’s youth population and demonstrated their commitment to advocating for change.

Protests play a crucial role in a democratic dispensation, serving as a vital mechanism for citizens to express their grievances, demand accountability, and advocate for their rights. In a democracy, the ability to protest is a fundamental right that allows for the free expression of opinions and the mobilization of public support for various causes.

The youth of Gen Zed deserve commendation for their courage, determination, and active participation in the democratic process. By organizing and participating in this protest, they have ensured that their voices are heard on critical issues affecting their lives and futures. Their efforts have brought attention to pressing problems and demonstrated the power of collective action.

ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA STAYS AWAY FROM STATE HOUSE MEETING

0

By Fox Correspondent
THE Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has been meeting this week and it is understood that the Conference has prepared a strong and stinging Pastoral Letter.

The pastoral letter has included issues affecting the people such as load-sheding, impending by-elections, cost of living crisis, hunger affecting over 6.8 million people and other pertinent issues.

However, State House has quickly maneuvered to undermine the Pastoral Letter by seeking to meet Bishops in a pre-emptive manner in order to moderate the concerns raised by the Conference and in attempt to force them to issue a lukewarm pastoral letter.

Further, President Hakainde Hichilema wrote an apology for incidences where the Police stormed a meeting where former President Edgar Lungu was paying a courtesy call on Bishop Clement Mulenga of Kabwe Diocese.

The Police also stormed a church meeting in Ndola where United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) leaders were scheduled to attend. The police also roughed up and arrested an old parishioner who was taking pictures.

The police have also denied political parties and citizens from holding public meetings, processions, demonstrations, and rallies.

Further, there has been an out-standing issue where UPND Secretary General, Batuke Imenda labeled Archbishop Alick Banda as Lucifer of Zambia.

All the Bishops have felt strongly that these are public and public interest matters and can not be dealt with in in private and confidential letters as done by President Hichilema.

Today, all the Bishops have gone to Hichilema’s pre-emptive meeting at State House except for Archbishop Banda.

Hichilema insisted that the meeting with the Bishops at State House will be off-camera and the details will be held under a secret and confidential banner and the outcome will not be published.

It is understood that Archbishop Banda has stayed away from the meeting at State House.

The Bishops are also headed to Malawi to a sub-regional meeting to discuss the matters affecting the peoole of the region.

The subregional consultative meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe will take place in Salima, Malawi, from 15 July to 19 July 2024.

This significant gathering aims to address various pressing challenges within the three countries, including inequality and environmental concerns.

that keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive workshops would be integral parts of the meeting, designed to address the theme “Building Bridges: Strengthening Faith, Unity, and Service.”

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA MEETS CATHOLIC BISHOPS

President Hakainde Hichilema says there is a partial breakthrough to the energy and drought crisis that the country is grappling with.

President Hichilema says he is confident that with the measures the government is implementing to curb the drought and energy crisis in the country, the problems will soon be arrested.

He notes that the government has been working tirelessly to ensure that the drought which has instigated food and energy security is dealt with, adding that people will soon see the solutions that the government has been working on behind the scenes.

President Hichilema states that the government has been spending sleepless nights in order to find permanent solutions to the two crises adding that stakeholders should come on board and help fight the scourge.

ZANIS reports that the Head of State said this today at State House when he met the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) members.

“ As government we have been working very hard to ensure that the problems such as the energy and the drought crisis are addressed. And when I say partial solutions, I don’t mean one bullet but a million of measures that we are putting together to arrest the two problems, and communities will soon start seeing the solutions ”, President Hichilema said.

President Hichilema says there is need for the church to dialogue with the government and join in addressing the drought and energy crisis.

The Head of State has since called on the church to continue working with the government in order to address the challenges.

“I must also take this opportunity to ask the church to continue working with the government to address these challenges”, President Hichilema said.

President Hichilema observed that drought and energy crisis are a risk to economic shutdown adding that stakeholders like the church should willingly work with the government.

And the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops President, Ignatius Chama says the church will continue working with the government to address the economic challenges.

Bishop Chama said it is for this reason that the ZCCB members have decided to meet the Head of State in order to share knowledge with the government on a number of issues patterning the country’s welfare.

“ We are equally happy to be here so that we can share knowledge on these issues that are affecting the country,’’ he said.

UPND MEMBER SPEAKS OUT
…let’s not ignore voices and aspirations of
those who entrusted us with their votes

By Bright Tembo( The Mast)

KABWE UPND youth activist Don Mwenda has urged President Hakainde Hichilema not to forget the struggles, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of those who worked tirelessly “to bring the party to power”.

Mwenda said true leadership is not about personal aggrandisement but about serving the people.

“As leaders, it’s easy to get caught up in the trappings of power and forget the very people who helped you achieve it. But it’s the grassroots supporters, the foot soldiers, and the everyday citizens who are the true backbone of any political party. Let us not forget the struggles, the sacrifices, and the unwavering dedication of those who worked tirelessly to bring us to power. Let us not ignore the voices, the concerns, and the aspirations of those who entrusted us with their votes,” he said in an interview. “As we bask in the glory of our achievements, let us remember that true leadership is not about personal aggrandisement but about serving the people who matter most. Let us rediscover our connection with the grassroots, listen to their stories, and empower their voices.”

Mwenda added that he cannot keep quiet while the plight of UPND members who were on the ground has not been looked after three years into government.

“To the leadership of UPND, I remain a loyal and dedicated member, but I cannot keep silent on the plight of our grassroots and foot soldiers who feel forgotten and neglected after our victory. It pains me to see civil servants who bravely supported us when it was unpopular still marginalised and overlooked for promotions while their former persecutors, known PF sympathisers, remain in positions of power. I urge you to address this injustice and recognise the dedication of our people. Let us not forget those who stood by us in the darkest hours,” Mwenda said. “Their neglect may have far-reaching consequences, even affecting President Hakainde Hichilema’s vote in 2026. Let us unite and work together to build a government that truly serves all from the grassroots to the top. My loyalty remains unwavering, but I hope my voice is heard.”

He reaffirmed his commitment and loyalty to the UPND.

“I want to assure you that despite my concerns I remain a loyal and dedicated member of this party. I believe in our shared vision and values, and I will continue to work tirelessly to support our collective goals. My desire is to see our party thrive not just in power but in its commitment to the people we serve. Let us stay true to our roots and work together to build a brighter future for all,” said Mwenda.

MUSOKOTWANE ON PROPOSED PROHIBITION OF FOREIGN CURRENCIES USAGE FOR LOCAL FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS & PHASING OUT OF CHEQUES

MUSOKOTWANE ON ROPOSED PROHIBITION OF FOREIGN CURRENCIES USAGE FOR LOCAL FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS & PHASING OUT OF CHEQUES

(Excerpts Statement Delivered To The National Assembly By Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, Minister of Finance & National Planning)

Madam Speaker, I thank you for the opportunity to address the issue raised by Hon. Anthony Mumba, Member of Parliament for Kantanshi Constituency, on the proposed ban on the use of foreign currencies for local financial transactions and the phasing out of cheques.

Both matters pertaining to the proposed foreign currency regulations and the phasing out of cheques are draft proposals that are being presented by the Bank of Zambia to stakeholders, for consultation.

Draft Foreign Currency Regulations

On 20th June 2024, the Bank of Zambia began a consultation process regarding the draft foreign currency regulations through the Public Private Dialogue Forum. Once feedback is received from stakeholders, the Bank of Zambia will then circulate the finalised draft regulations. Therefore, it is important to first allow this consultative process to conclude.

Broad goals of the proposed currency regulations:

a) To enforce existing laws and strengthen the implementation of monetary policy, which works better by influencing the quoting and pricing of domestic transactions in Zambian Kwacha; and,

b) Dollarisation could be detrimental to financial stability as it gives rise to mismatches in the foreign currency assets and liabilities of financial institutions when there is a steep movement in the exchange rate. The draft foreign currency regulations are therefore also aimed at enhancing financial sector stability.

The proposed regulations are not stand alone but are part of the broader policy measures that the Government has implemented to reform the economy. These measures have included financial sector reforms such as the electronic balance of payments and the export tracking framework.

Phasing Out of Cheques:

Regarding the phasing out of Cheques, let me begin by indicating that the fake notice currently circulating on social media platforms titled “Public Notice on Phasing out of cheques” WAS NOT issued by the Bank of Zambia. The Bank of Zambia is currently discussing the possibility of phasing out Cheques and consultations are underway. The Bank will accordingly issue a public statement once these engagements are concluded, and a decision made.

Broadly, phasing out cheques is one of the key initiatives being pursued under the National Payment System Vision and Strategy for 2023-2027. This is mainly on account of the significant decline in the usage of cheques over the past decade.

I reiterate that the Bank of Zambia has commenced stakeholder consultations to allow for wider discussion and feedback. This will help in creating the necessary awareness on the intention of this regulation and to ensure that these regulations work for all.

The public and stakeholders are assured that discontinuation of the usage of cheques as payment instruments will be done in a consultative, coordinated, and phased manner. The plan is for a more gradual approach with a timeframe of at least eighteen (18) months.

Madam Speaker, I Thank You.

A WAITER at Protea Hotel narrated how he reported Forum for Democracy and Development president Edith Nawakwi to police for seditious practices after he watched her in a clip accusing government of being behind Petauke lawmaker Emmanuel Jay Banda.

Given Mayumbelo, 41, said after watching the Facebook clip of Ms Nawakwi and hearing what she uttered, he felt bad that she was accusing Government of abducting citizens.

Mr Mayumbelo said he was saddened that “mother [Ms Nawakwi] said the government is abducting people,” he said.

This is in case Nawakwi is accused of seditious practises and appearing before senior magistrate Irene Wishimanga.

Mr Mayumbelo testified that on May 25 this year around 12:00, he was at work and got his phone before checking what was on social media where he saw a video which disturbed his mind.

“I saw the video on Jay cool page and there was a picture of madam Nawakwi and I head what she was talking about she was saying she woke up in the morning with a lot of sadness because Jay Banda was being abducted by the state of Zambia.

“She went on to say that Hakainde has thrown us back way in the dark ages where people used to wake up in the morning and found archbishop has been murdered and a lawyer going to the Copperbelt to defend the case has gone missing,” he said.

Mr Mayumbelo said Ms Nawakwi further said that “HH has taken them back to those days in his regime”.

“She also said that nothing should happen to Jay may you take him back to the nation and parliament. She said let not anything happen to young jay and what will happen it’s the state of the republic of Zambia”.

He said people made bad comments about the clip viewed by 4,000 people.

AT LEAST 10 CORRUPTION CASES REPORTED EVERY WEEK-OPP

0

Office of the Public Protector says their office receives about 10 anonymous corruption related cases reported every week.

Office of the Public Protector, Public Relations Officer, Riebeck Hazela, said their office being an implementer of the whistleblower act, receives regular reports from the public.

He said the institution’s preventive approach towards corruption through their citizen awareness activities has led to the number of cases reported per week.

Mr Hazela disclosed to ZANIS that in order to reduce cases of corruption in various institutions in the country, there is need to end maladministration.

“Maladministration is an ingredient of corruption, so it is important to stop corruption in its infancy, and we are doing everything possible to ensure we fight maladministration cases before they graduate into corruption through public sensitization,” he said.

Speaking during the Africa Anti-Corruption day exhibition held at Anti-Corruption Commission Head Quarters with other law enforcement Agencies this afternoon, Mr Hazela urged members of the public to follow the right channel in reporting cases of corruption or grievances in their work places and not take the law into their own hands.

“If a member of the public is not happy with a service they are at liberty to report to our offices anonymously. We make sure that people’s identity is not disclosed,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same exhibition, Anti-Corruption Commission Assistant Director in the Public Education Department, Masauso Nyangulu disclosed that the essence of the exhibition is to provide awareness to the public about the devastating effects of corruption.

Mr Nyangulu called on the members of the public to come on board in the fight against corruption at all levels.

He also urged the public to utilize the secure anti-corruption reporting system which is an online anonymous whistleblower system (OAWS).

“The system protects the reporter and only those in authority will receive the report as it safeguards the person reporting any corruption case at their office, no one can know who has reported, not even the one receiving the report,” he said.

ZANIS reports that the Africa anti-corruption day is being commemorated under the theme, ‘Effective Whistleblower Protection Mechanism; A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption.’

IRH mining dealmaker met with Congo gold smugglers, UN says

Amb Emmanuel Mwamba writes:

IRH mining dealmaker met with Congo gold smugglers, UN says

A businessman who has been leading a push into mining by Abu Dhabi’s largest listed company has been cited for having dealings with smugglers of gold from central Africa, according to a United Nations report.

Sibtein Alibhai has been chief global strategist of International Resources Holding since April 2023, according to the company. He helped the firm acquire a major Zambian copper mine, according to people familiar with the matter, and has played a key role in discussions with foreign governments on at least two other occasions.

But UN investigators this week said that Alibhai discussed business with gold traffickers in his role at another venture established to clean up the mineral trade in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Their report on Congo didn’t mention IRH or Alibhai’s work for the Emirati company, but described him as having had meetings with gold smugglers as recently as March this year.

IRH is a unit of International Holding Company, a conglomerate controlled by United Arab Emirates’ National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The company was relatively unknown in the global mining world before late last year, when it made the winning bid to buy control of Zambia’s Mopani copper-cobalt complex from the government with a commitment to inject more than $1 billion into the asset. Alibhai led the negotiations for the deal for IRH, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.

Since then, the company has been on an aggressive hunt for mining deals in Africa and elsewhere, which could turn it into a key player in metals that will be crucial for the energy transition — including copper, which many observers expect is heading for a large shortfall in the coming years as demand outstrips supply. Critical minerals are also a growing focus for western governments seeking to counter China’s dominance of global supply chains.

Potential deals
IRH has struck agreements to mine iron ore in Angola and is exploring potential deals around the globe for metals including cobalt, nickel, lithium and graphite, according to a company spokesman. Alibhai led an IRH delegation in April to No. 3 copper producer Peru for talks with the country’s government, according to a post on X by the Peruvian mining ministry.

Around the same time, however, Alibhai also “approached several gold smugglers” on behalf of a company he founded named Primera Group and “offered them business opportunities,” experts appointed by the UN Security Council said in a new report. Those meetings took place in February and March, the report said.

IRH and Alibhai declined to comment on the allegations about meetings with smugglers. Via a representative for IRH, Alibhai said that he “resigned from Primera Group in April 2023 to accept the position as chief global strategist at IRH. Mr Alibhai has not represented Primera Group since 2023.”

Representatives for IHC, Primera and Congo’s government didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Abu Dhabi-registered Primera is the majority shareholder in a project launched in December 2022 to formalize the gold trade which was supposed to combat the rampant smuggling that fuels deadly violence in the African nation’s eastern provinces. The partnership – which was granted a 25-year contract to export hand-mined gold – sold 5 tons of the metal, worth about $300 million, in its first year of operation, but sales have since plummeted.

Congo’s government told Bloomberg last month that it was finalizing a deal to buy out Primera’s 55% interest in the gold-buying business, without providing further details.

For nearly three decades, smuggling minerals from eastern Congo has helped fund local and regional conflicts. Congo’s government says much of the trafficked gold reaches the UAE after transiting neighboring Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, which have exported billions of dollars worth of gold in recent years despite having few mines of their own. The countries deny they’re shipping stolen gold.

Giannis Antetokounmpo to make history as first Black athlete to carry Greece’s flag at the Olympics

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the celebrated Greek basketball player and two-time NBA MVP, is set to make history as the first black athlete to carry Greece’s flag at the Olympics. Antetokounmpo will share this honor with racewalker Antigoni Ntrismpioti during the opening ceremony in Paris on July 26.

This announcement follows the Greek men’s basketball team’s recent triumph, securing their first Olympic qualification since 2008 by defeating Croatia in a thrilling match in Piraeus, according to the BBC.

Overcome with emotion, the 29-year-old Antetokounmpo, who has played for the Milwaukee Bucks since being drafted in 2013 and led them to the 2021 NBA championship, was seen in tears after the victory.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” he said after qualification. “Since I was a kid I always wanted to play in the Olympic Games.”

His path to becoming Greece’s Olympic flagbearer has been fraught with challenges. Born to Nigerian immigrant parents, Antetokounmpo spent his first 18 years effectively stateless, unable to travel outside Greece due to a lack of official documentation from either Greece or Nigeria. His situation changed in May 2013, when he was granted Greek citizenship just weeks before the NBA draft.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Antetokounmpo spoke about his difficult childhood and the obstacles he overcame on his way to stardom.

“I used to sell things since I can remember myself since I was six or seven years old.

“I was always out of home trying as much as I could to help my mom and dad by selling watches, glasses, CDs, DVDs, and everything I could find. I was doing that until I turned 17 because I had to. I had no other choice. When I was selling all those things, I was the best seller.”

Despite achieving fame in the U.S., Antetokounmpo faced racism in his homeland of Greece. In a 2020 TNT documentary, he revealed the challenges he encountered, stating, “Greece is a country of white people, life can be difficult for someone with the color of my skin. Or of another nationality. You go to a lot of neighborhoods, and you face a lot of racism.”

His comments sparked backlash from some Greeks, including Konstantinos Kalemis, then-coordinator for refugee education at the Malakasa camp, who used racial slurs against Antetokounmpo and was subsequently fired.

Antetokounmpo has also experienced discrimination from government officials. In 2018, Adonis Georgiadis, now the health minister, mispronounced Giannis Antetokounmpo’s name and incorrectly stated he was born in Africa instead of Greece.

Antetokounmpo will be one of the first athletes to open the Games as Greece traditionally leads the parade. Spyros Kapralos, president of the Greek Olympic Committee, said there was unanimous support for Antetokounmpo to carry the flag in Paris, believing the flagbearers would elevate the country’s profile.

Rachel Lindsay’s Ex-Husband Demands $16K In Spousal Support

0

Rachel Lindsay was instantly drawn to Bryan Abasolo when they first met at the Bachelorette show.

Rachel appeared in The Bachelorette’s thirteenth season, made an immediate connection with Bryan, and gave him the benefit of the doubt.

In 2019, the couple tied the knot in a private ceremony in Mexico. However, earlier this year, Bryan filed for divorce.

Rachel claims she learned of his divorce, which he filed in January of this year through a text message.

Bryan is now claiming that Rachel is exploiting the divorce to win over the public’s sympathy as he requests an increase in alimony payments.

Following Lindsay’s denial, Bryan Abasolo has reiterated his demand for significantly higher spousal assistance.

The 44-year-old responded in a petition on Tuesday, July 2, to his ex-wife’s assertion that he is “not in need” of financial support during their ongoing divorce.

Abasolo has argued that he needs support to maintain their “marital standard of living”.

Rachel also claimed in a June 26 filing obtained by PEOPLE that; Bryan’s claims were “not supported by competent evidence and far exceed the actual marital lifestyle and his need.”

Bryan also claimed he needed more money from Rachel to survive, according to a TMZ report.

Rachael is currently offering to provide him with $9,882 in assistance per month.

However, according to court records that the outlet was able to get, he requires roughly $16,275 each month to make ends meet.

Bryan, who is a chiropractor, claims he makes $1,341 a month and that all of the money is used to pay bills.

He claims that “there is nothing left after I pay monthly expenses,” per the documents that were retrieved.

In the past, Rachel claimed that the divorce filing caught her off guard but Bryan claims that this is untrue and that she is merely “making a PR play to garner public sympathy.”

The couple still resides in their marital residence, but Bryan claims he has been visiting friends to escape the “toxic environment” there.

To prevent him from using the house, he claims that Rachael has changed a number of passwords.

In court filings, Rachel claims, however, that she makes roughly $61,019 a month, and she thinks Bryan’s income might be closer to $13,413.

Biden campaign team have already picked out at least three Democrats who could serve as Kamala Harris’s running mate

0

Aides to US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris‘ campaign team have already picked out at least three Democrats who could serve as Harris’s running mate should Biden drop out of the 2024 presidential election.

The New York Times reports that as Biden, 81, continues to face pressure to end his re-election bid, people close to the effort revealed that a shortlist of potential VP’s is already being compiled just in case the incumbent chooses to exit the ticket,

The report says that at the top of the list are Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, with Cooper the clear front-runner, according to the outlet.

The insiders explained that as the first woman of colour to be a major party’s presidential nominee, Harris’ ideal running mate should be a white man who could appeal to conservative-inclined voters.

Cooper, 67, was elected North Carolina governor in 2016, removing Republican incumbent Pat McCrory, and was re-elected in 2020 beating other Democrats on the ballot in a state won twice by former President Donald Trump.

Cooper and Harris also have a personal connection, having worked with each other when they served as attorneys general in North Carolina and California respectively.

Beshear, 46, also a former state attorney general, could get votes for Harris after winning re-election in deep-red Kentucky last year.

Shapiro, 51, another former state attorney general, could also get the swing state of Pennsylvania for Harris, but he’s been in office for just 18 months.

Harris has not made any public suggestions that she would seek the Democratic nomination, Saying in public that she supports Biden.

“We always knew this election would be tough — and the past few days have been a reminder that running for president of the United States is never easy,” Harris told a crowd of supporters in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

But the one thing we know about our president, Joe Biden, is that he is a fighter,” she added.

Meanwhile, Biden on Tuesday said he won’t be dropping out of the race and would defeat Trump at the polls.

Actor Nicolas Cage’s son Weston arrested ‘for a$$aulting his mother

Hollywood actor, Nicolas Cage’s son Weston, 33, has been arrested for allegedly a$$aulting his mother during a mental health crisis.

Weston was booked on Wednesday, Wednesday 10, for assault with a deadly weapon- just weeks after his mother, actress Christina Fulton, 57, was spotted with intense bruises on her face.

Actor Nicolas Cage

The 33-year-old actor was released on a $150,000 bail around 10am. The U.S. Sun reported that his father is believed to be the one who bailed him out.

‘The family knew this was going to happen but needless to say, it is a very big shock,’ a source close to the family told the outlet.

The scuffle between Weston and Fulton occurred on April 28 in the Los Angeles area, when a verbal dispute reportedly turned physical.

An ambulance was reportedly called to the home to check out Fulton, but she declined to be taken to the hospital.

Investigators say Weston was gone by the time police arrived at the scene, and law enforcement will determine if the case will be considered felony battery.

Sources allege Fulton was trying to console her son, who was dealing with some emotional issues.

She has refuted claims the two got into an argument and has asked for privacy in the matter.

The Snake Eyes actress was seen putting coins into a parking meter with a black eye and fading bruises on her face.

She met an unknown friend there, with whom she shared a hug.

The actress previously released a statement on the interaction with her son, and said: ‘Weston and I had no argument prior to the incident.

‘On Sunday, April 28, I was reached out to by several of Weston’s best friends for assistance because they were experiencing Weston in a mental-health crisis’

‘Upon my arrival, I was met by my son who clearly was in a state of a mental health breakdown, which in turn became a horrific experience’

‘I have always supported helping my son with mental health struggles. I am doing all I can to get him the continued support he needs,’ Fulton added.

Two women charged with k1lling married “sugar daddy” and using his severed thumb to steal from to his accounts

Two women have been charged with m#rdering and dism3mbering a man in Washington, D.C., with one of them then using his severed thumb to steal money from his bank account to splurge on Uber rides, marijuana and booze, court documents and police reveal.

Tiffany Taylor Gray, 22, was arrested in Maryland earlier this month (July 2024) on a warrant for first-degree m#rder while armed for the sl@ying of 53-year-old Fasil Teklemariam, who was found d3ad inside his Washington, D.C., apartment on April 5, 2024, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said.

One witness said that Gray worked as a sex worker and that Gray described Teklemariam as her “sugar daddy,” although those claims have not been verified by police, an MPD spokesperson tells Fox News Digital.

Teklemariam, a married father of two, according to a GoFundMe page, was found inside his Peabody Street home with st@b wounds, multiple blunt-force fractures to his head and missing his right thumb.

Broken glass was also found around his body and on his bed while forensic detectives determined that cleaning agents had been used to hide some evidence at the scene, according to an arrest affidavit.

The exact details surrounding his d3ath have not been revealed.

A witness told police that Teklemariam’s thumb was used to gain access to a finance app on his cellphone — which was stolen from the scene — in order to buy liquor and drugs.

Teklemariam’s thumb and cell phone have not yet been recovered.

Police say that Gray is one of four suspects — two women and two men — being investigated in relation to the sl@ying.

All four suspects were seen on surveillance footage entering Teklemariam’s apartment using a key fob and removing items from it in the days before police found him d3ad.

Investigators believe Teklemariam was k!lled on April 1.

One of those suspects, Audrey Denise Miller, 19, was arrested on June 21 and charged with first-degree m#rder while armed in connection with the killing, the MPD said. She is in custody awaiting a preliminary hearing.

Surveillance video shows Miller with Teklemariam before his d3ath, the charging documents say.

An anonymous witness told police that Gray and Teklemariam knew each other and that Gray referred to him as her “sugar daddy” and that she was involved in pr0stitution. The witness told police that they had observed Gray using Teklemariam’s severed thumb to steal money from his account.

Investigators say they got a break in the case when they learned of a complaint Teklemariam filed with police claiming Gray had taken his phone and used it to steal $1,800 from his finance app last year, per the affidavit. The two had met at his apartment on Oct. 1 to hang out but the following morning he noticed she had left and that his cell phone was missing with charges made to his Cash App account.

They also discovered that Teklemariam’s cellphone last pinged from a tower in College Park, Maryland, near where Gray rented an apartment.

Teklemariam was last seen alive on the evening of April 1, when CCTV footage captures him going to meet Miller outside his apartment and then going back inside with her, according to court documents.

According to court records, he left about 20 minutes later and returned shortly after with three cans of Coca-Cola.

Gray, Miller and one of the male suspects were observed leaving the apartment building later on April 1.

Two women charged with k1lling married “sugar daddy” and using his severed thumb to steal from to his accounts (video)
Tiffany Taylor Gray seen entering Fasil Teklemariam’s apartment building on April 1 with another suspect

Police in Maryland were able to zone in on Taylor after a man reported being robbed at gunpoint by two suspects at her apartment. The man said he connected with Taylor via a dating app and arranged to meet her at her apartment. When he got there, the two men jumped out of the bathroom and pulled a gun on him before robbing him. He was forced to reveal his banking pin codes and his home was also burglarized.

Investigators say that Gray has repeatedly met men online and stole from them.

A black Dodge Durango being used by the two suspects and Taylor was also observed outside Teklemariam’s apartment building in April.

The vehicle ended up being confiscated by police at a traffic stop, and a shoe and a jacket inside the vehicle matched that being worn by one of the suspects seen leaving Teklemariam’s apartment building on April 3, according to the documents.

The driver identified himself as Tommy Whack, and he is being charged in Maryland with unspecified crimes.

Gray was also charged with armed robbery and armed kidnapping in the Maryland case. She is awaiting extradition to Washington, D.C., in relation to Teklemariam’s death.

Leading people isn’t easy, I know it – HH

By Thomas Ngala( The Mast)

LEADING people is not easy, I know it, admits President Hakainde Hichilema.

Officiating at the Bene Mukuni traditional ceremony in Kazungula on Saturday, President Hichilema said “bantu balakatazya,” a tonga phrase which translates to people are difficult.

“So we wish our host royal highness good health, continued strength to lead our people. Leading people is not easy. I know it, we know it. It is not easy,” he said. “Bantu balakatazya but we must continue doing what is right in order to make our communities better.”

President Hichilema stressed the need for Zambians to unite.

“We know countries that are going through instability and we know the cost and price of instability. This country should not even think an inch about causing instability within itself. That is a no go area. This is a special year for us. 60 years of independence, truly, it is a special year,” he said.

He lamented that the country is celebrating its 60th independence amid the effects of drought.

President Hichilema said the government is committed to ensuring Zambians are fed during the drought period.

He added that politics should not take precedence “as we work to feed our people.”

He emphasised the need for leaders to collaborate adding that “working together we will make it, no matter how difficult, we will succeed.”

“One of the things that we will and have to do, I think God has opened our eyes, is that we must have energy diversity. We must have irrigation based agriculture and then we will be able to look after our people going forward. Development is something that we must promote at all times, even at ceremonies like these,” he said.

President Hichilema stressed the need to promote tourism.

“This country was loved by God. God gave us so much. Let us be conscious of what God gave us and didn’t give other countries. Let us utilise these resource endowments to benefit the people of Zambia and the region, and Africa, and the globe as a whole,” said President Hichilema. “Just to underscore the importance of unity in our country, and that your government is committed to doing everything possible to every citizen of this great land. I think it is up to the community members to also do their part.”

GIVEN LUBINDA SHOULD STOP FOOLING ZAMBIANS AND GO FOR A MENTAL TEST- UPND

0

YouIt is sad to note that former Justice Minister Given Lubinda is exhibiting symptoms of memory loss let alone fooling Zambians by alleging that republican president His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and his government have failed to create employment for the youths in the country. Mr. Lubinda also alleged that the UPND government has contracted a $6 Billion debt which is not known how it has been spent.

Mr. Lubinda’s rhetoric during his presser was confirmation that he has developed some mental sickness for which he needs mental test by medical experts.

How, in all sanity could Mr. Lubinda pretend that he has forgotten it was the Patriotic Front that announced employment freeze and wage freeze in parliament through Dr. Bwalya Ng’andu? To the contrary, the UPND has recruited 39,428 teachers in two years, 14,276 health workers, 4,500 in Defence, over 2500 under Local government, over 250 under ZRA, over 150 under Immigration, over 100 under Zesco.

Private sector jobs stand at 13,632 in the manufacturing industry, 9,432 in the mining sector, 8,396 in the Agriculture sector, 7,252 in the transport sector, 1,062 in the construction sector, 8,382 under services, 1,802 in the energy sector, 475 in the Tourism sector, 159 in ICT, 106 in Real Estate, and these are opportunities Mr. Lubinda who was making retiree spend nights in the cold at his office and Edgar Lungu failed to create under PF government.

Additionally, over 2,800 cooperatives have been given grants creating over 50,000 jobs for the SMEs.

The of over 13,632 jobs in the manufacturing sector alone is clear testimony of stability in the economic indicators, the political stability, and the improved fight against corruption under the UPND government in which our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) improved from negative two under the PF to over two percent under the UPND leadership in two years.

Mr. Lubinda and Edgar Lungu through the PF subjected over 34000 council workers to hunger by not paying them their salaries of seven to 15 months, including 258,000 farmers who were owed money by Food Reserve Agency.

The much praised Edgar Lungu and the failed to pay TAZARA workers and former TAZAMA workers their dues which money has been paid off by UPND government.

How can Mr. Lubinda forget that the PF government was failing to pay UNZA, CBU and other PUBLIC Universities salaries which is no longer the case under the UPND leadership?

I wish to remind Mr. Lubinda and his minions that the PF failed to sustain students’ meal allowances and scrapped them off which allowances have been reinstated by the UPND government.

Under the PF many companies were closing due to economic instability a situation which led to youths working in these private sector companies lose jobs.

Indeni Oil Refinery was closed indefinitely, Mopani Copper Mines collapsed and Konkola Copper Mines went through liquidation resulting in over 7000 citizens on the Copperbelt sent into joblessness.

I wish to advise Mr. Lubinda Given to sober up and stop fooling the Zambians over things they failed to do during the PF 10 years mandate the PF was given to rule Zambia.

We reject this concept of wamuyayaya, says Muhabi

0

By Kholiwe Miti(The Mast)

WE reject this concept of wamuyayaya, says Muhabi Lungu.

Lungu has charged that the UPND government is bent on creating a one party state that was rejected by Zambians years ago.

During the Zambia We Want (ZWW) briefing on Wednesday, Lungu said the creation of a political messiah or a saviour, within the institutions of governance is undesirable and abhorrent to a democratic system of governance.

“[There’s] a general dissatisfaction with the current political, social and economic situation as being managed by the current administration. An economic situation appearing hopeless, misunderstood and dangerously undermanaged. Instead of boldly confronting the issues at hand, government continues to play the blame game even after more than two years in office. It will be three just in a few weeks, next month in August,” he said.

Lungu noted a clear propensity by the government to attack, weaken and obliterate all opposition political parties with a view towards the creation of a de facto one party state.

“This is in an apparent attempt at killing the dream of a functional multiparty state as envisioned in 1990 by the people of our republic,” he said.

Lungu said there was insufficient checks and balances between the three arms of government.

“… and consequent elevation of the presidency above and beyond other institutions of governance. Too powerful a presidency. The creation of a political messiah or a saviour within the institutions of governance is undesirable and abhorrent to a democratic system of governance. Only one Messiah, up in the heaves, sited at the right hand of the father, and deeply embedded through all our hearts through the Holy Spirit but certainly not an ordinary man. We reject this concept of ‘wamuyayaya’,” he said.

Lungu said the dream of 1990 of a free and democratic country has been demoted to the back of the classroom.

“In evaluating these and many other problems that were discussed in the first gathering of concerned citizens and in subsequent meetings that were to follow it was unanimously agreed that we as a people were living in a Zambia that none of us wanted. That this was not the Zambia we wanted. That the aspirations of our forefathers at independence 60 years ago for effective self-governance, towards a proud self-reliance, equitable ownership of our natural resources and the means to produce and add value to our collective inheritance had all but dissipated and that in its place there was nothing but disillusionment. That the dream of 1990, just a little bit more than 30 years ago, of a functional democratic state, promoting free expressing of freedoms; freedom of speech, freedom assembly, freedom of uninterrupted worship and freedom from social, economic deprivation has all been relegated to the very back of the classroom,” he said. “And instead at the front of the line has been placed personal ambitions of politicians and their friends as well as their domestic and international business partners. This cannot be the Zambia we want. Definitely not the Zambia we want. Every youth in our republic, each one of us, should seriously and honestly probe and understand how we have gotten here? Because it has not been by accident. How have we gotten here, to this undesirable and sad situation, to this desolate place?”

He lamented the growing incidence of promoted ethnicity, tribalism and government behaviour with tendencies of creating exclusion on the basis of political affiliation, family ties and or regionalism.

“Under no circumstance can this be deemed right or acceptable. A noticeable luck of transparency in government procurement, offloading of national assets and affirmations to questionable international agreements, raising legitimate fears and concerns at the possible explosion of white collar corruption; a more dangerous vice than petty theft that we previously have been used to,” said Lungu. “The dangerous and therefore undesirable habit that has developed in our country by the people of Zambia and its opposition political parties to allow a discontented situation to degenerate to a point where the voter is only concerned with the removal of the current administration without carefully probing and making a careful assessment and consideration as to who the possible replacement will be; a possible replacement in terms of quality of leadership and a workable policy framework…”

OUR ERRORS, OUR WEAKNESSES – Fred M’membe

To begin with, I would like to refer to a saying of Lenin, that the attitude – that is to say, the seriousness of purpose – of a revolutionary party is measured, basically, by the attitude it has towards its own errors. In the same way, our seriousness of purpose as a party will be measured by the attitude we take toward our own errors.

Of course, our political opponents are always alert to know what those errors are. When those errors are made and subjected to self-criticism, our political opponents take advantage of them. When those errors are made and are subjected to self-criticism, they may be used by our political opponents, but in a very different way. This is because in the former case, our errors would not be corrected, and in the latter, they would be. That is why we take a forthright and serious attitude toward our own errors.

We should stimulate the revolutionary criticism of our members; we should stimulate it. It is sometimes argued that we should not publicise our defects and our errors because in doing so, we are helping our political opponents. This idea is completely false. To not be open and frank in facing up to our errors and shortcomings in a courageous, resolute way is what will make us weak and help our political opponents. The constant fight against our defects and weaknesses is, in fact, a fight against our political opponents; and we must always be on the ready.

Our party is growing very fast. We are receiving more new members every day. Of course, there are a few who, for varying reasons, have left the party. There has been an attempt to exaggerate the numbers of those who have left and make it appear like there’s a mass exodus of members, especially on the Copperbelt where there have been protracted or what may appear like intractable intraparty fights for leadership.
This very fast growth of the party is bringing with it new and many organisational and ideological challenges, which may take some time to resolve. But our desire to instantly solve these challenges should not lead us to improvise. We have learned that no isolated measure, no matter how just or effective it seems, can lead to the true, progressive solutions we are aiming for. We must understand, above all, that the only way to tackle systematically the problems of our party’s fast growth and overcome our weaknesses is by dealing with the situation in its entirety and following the laws of the construction of a socialist party; that propaganda measures are incapable, in themselves, of automatically eliminating weaknesses, deficiencies or faults that are quickly becoming habits.

On the other hand, experience has shown that in such circumstances, it is necessary to avoid unilateral judgments, avoid excessive zeal, and now, also watch out for those who are too demanding, the demagogic “champions”, who tend to crop up in such situations in order to divert the attention from their own weaknesses, faults and deficiencies and pretend to be demanding when they are really opportunists trying to avoid being called on to account for themselves. We must demand to the utmost, but we must also watch out for those “superdemanders”. We must be firm, but just in our demands, we must avoid witch-hunts, which are foreign to our methods, our principles, and the character of our party.

Let dignity and decorum, courage, spirit, and revolutionary honesty take the floor. Let criticism of defects be a constant and be directed at all alike. We are referring to correct criticism, well-founded, healthy, constructive criticism at the right time and place and formulated in the right way. We make a clear distinction between criticism formulated by revolutionaries and ill-intentioned, insidious, and slanderous attacks made by our political opponents or which play into the hands of our political opponents. We must be firm with attacks passing for criticism, wherever they are made manifest. Everybody in the party has a place and means for correctly expressing criticism, always with a view of strengthening the party, not weakening it.

Let us fight with the same energy and firmness of spirit against our defects. Let us wipe out all our shortcomings and show revolutionary intransigence in putting the detractors and the faint-hearted in their place. Members should give it their all, leaders should make their lives and work examples of dedication and industry.
We have not always acted wisely. We haven’t always made the best decisions. But we are always certainly able, with all the honesty in the world, to detect in time any error, any wrong decision, recognise it, rectify it, and carry on; because even when you travel through the mountains with the help of a compass, or today GPS, from time to time there can be some drifting away from the right path – just as ships sailing on the ocean occasionally drift off course a little – but you always keep going ahead in the right direction.

But we can assert, above all else, that we have been capable of rectifying mistakes and that today, our party is stronger and more solid than ever before.

However, since nobody can predict the future, we must always be ready to face up to the most difficult situations. Difficult situations differentiate those who have their feet firmly on the ground. We are absolutely convinced that those who vacillate and are faint of heart will weaken, but our party will grow in the face of adversity.

We never even insinuated that the challenge would be an easy one; we never hid from the members of our party the fact that there would be severe trials, enormous difficulties, and titanic efforts, heroism, willingness to sacrifice, firmness, courage, patriotism, and class consciousness required in order to fulfil our commitment to the masses of our people.

CIVIL SOCIETY STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE ARREST OF PEACEFUL “FIX ZESCO” PROTESTERS BY THE ZAMBIA POLICE

0

The undersigned Civil Society Organisations strongly condemn the arrest of peaceful protesters by the Zambia Police. The protesters wished to show displeasure with ZESCO’s management of the power situation resulting in unprecedented levels of load shedding and the publishing of schedules for load shedding that are not followed.

The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights that must be protected and upheld. These rights are not only enshrined in Zambia’s constitution but also in numerous international human rights treaties to which Zambia is a party.

The detention of people peacefully exercising their right to protest is a blatant violation of these rights and a step backward for democracy and civic participation in Zambia. Peaceful protests are
a vital form of citizen participation and should only be curtailed when there is a clear and present danger of harm or a violation of the law.

Suppressing peaceful dissent undermines the principles of a democratic society and erodes public trust in the government.
We further strongly condemn the Police for failing to respect the freedom of conscience as provided in the Constitution. One of the arrested protesters is Muslim and during the process of detention and arrest, officers from the Zambia Police removed the Hijab she was wearing.

A violation of her religious beliefs and a violation of the freedom of conscience under the constitution. Law enforcement must be alive to the various religious beliefs and accommodate them in the criminal process.

We call on the government of Zambia to adhere to its human rights obligations and to take immediate steps to ensure that all citizens can fully enjoy their rights without fear of detention or intimidation.

This includes a thorough and speedy review and amendment of laws such as the Public Order Act and the Penal Code. Provisions within these laws that exceed international best practices for the restriction of rights must be revised to align with Zambia’s commitment to
uphold the highest standards of human rights.

The Zambian government must demonstrate its dedication to democratic principles by protecting the rights of all people to freely express their views and assemble peacefully. We urge the
authorities to release all individuals who have been unjustly detained.
A just and equitable Zambia is built on respecting and promoting human rights, not stifling them.

We stand with the peaceful protesters and reaffirm our commitment to advocating for their rights and freedoms. Free speech and the right to assemble are fundamental to democracy. The law and its enforcers must ensure that everyone’s rights are respected, allowing all citizens to fully enjoy their freedoms.

LUNGU DID NOT ONLY DISREGARD THE JUDICIARY, HE ALSO THREATENED THE JUDGES

By Diggers Editor,

11th July 2024

OPINION

BY virtue of my upbringing and as a former president, I am not a person of empty rhetoric, open lies and hot false stories, I always try to be politically honest and factually respectful in my engagements. As you all may remember, in 2016 after the dissolution of Parliament, all cabinet and deputy ministers remained in office as the new law was ambiguous. We were heavily criticised and after a legal battle, the Courts of Law made a ruling that the stay was illegal, and all allowances and salaries accrued during the stay were to be paid back. The December 2016 judgment is testimony to the effect that, during my time, the judiciary was fully independent and operated freely even by making decisions against my own government. We never interfered with them but simply respected them as a separate wing of government in a functional democracy”.

This a claim from former president Edgar Lungu. As we stated in yesterday’s editorial opinion in which we pointed out the deception of this current government, politicians are liars. In the case of Mr Lungu, apart from being a self-acclaimed top-notch lawyer, he is also a well renowned top-notch liar. Everything in the statement that Mr Lungu makes above is false and we can’t imagine that he expects citizens to forget so soon what he did in government. This particular president did not only interfere in the Judiciary, he actually threatened judges and breached the Constitution on several occasions.

From the onset, Mr Lungu’s presidency was shrouded in dishonesty. Zambians will remember that he used the Judiciary to hoodwink his political opponent, conniving with some lawyers to circumvent justice through a bogus consent order that imposed him as a presidential candidate for the Patriotic Front. His disregard for the Constitution became more clear after he ascended to power. Following the outcome of the 2016 general elections, the UPND filed a petition in the Constitutional Court against the election of President Lungu. According to the law, once a petition is filed in court challenging the results, a sitting Head of State must step aside during the time of hearing the presidential petition, while the Speaker of the National Assembly presides over the Executive arm of government. Another law had also been passed stating that upon the dissolution of Parliament, ministers must vacate office. Mr Lungu defied both of these laws. He ordered ministers to stay in office, saying he knew the law better. This position was against the advice of the Attorney General Likando Kalaluka SC who made it clear on ZNBC TV that no minister would be expected to stay in office. It was surprising that Mr Lungu refused to obey the laws which he approved himself in the amended Constitution.

To this day, the Judiciary has not offered an explanation for why Mr Lungu was not legally sworn-in by the Chief Justice in 2016. But we can speculate that because of his disrespect for the Judiciary and his desperate desire to cut corners, the Chief Justice did not want to entangle herself in illegalities.

Leading up to the 2021 elections, an issue arose around whether Mr Lungu, having been twice sworn in as President, was still eligible to contest the next elections. This man could not wait for his eligibility matter to be heard and determined. While addressing the nation through the press in Solwezi, Mr Lungu issued threats to the Constitutional Court judges, warning that if they ruled against him, the country would be plunged into chaos. With the Coat of Arms flying beside him, reminding him of his mandate to defend the Constitution, Mr Lungu said he would not allow regime change in Zambia because according to him, it was being instigated by foreigners. He ordered the judges not to act according to the People’s will but in the interest of peace.

This is what he said: “To my colleagues in the Judiciary, my message is just do your work. Don’t become a copycat and think that you are a hero if you plunge this country into chaos. I am just warning you because I have received information that some of you want to be adventurous, your adventure should not plunge us into chaos, please! I want to make it very clear. People are saying Zambian courts should be brave and make decisions which are in the interest of the people but look at what’s happening in Kenya now. I am saying the courts of law in Zambia should also see what’s happening, they should not behave like they are not part of our African continent. The most important thing I can say now is, 2021, I am going to stand if my party chooses me. I am saying this in front of you people because there are cameras in front of me, I have heard some judges say ‘why don’t we emulate the Kenyan courts? They are very brave’, I don’t think that is right.”

How did Mr Lungu hear what the judges were saying? Where did he get the information that Zambian judges were plotting to emulate the decision made in Kenya? This happened because Mr Lungu controlled the Judiciary. He did not observe any separation of powers. In fact, State House under Mr Lungu revealed to the public that judgements of the court were passed on to them before they were announced. When we asked Mr Lungu’s spokesperson why the Head of State took up the role of the Finance Minister to personally sign a sovereign guarantee for STAG African Renewable Energy to raise US$500 million on behalf of Zesco, we were told that the President was aware that the Constitutional Court would rule against the ministers’ stay in office the next day.

When we look at all this, we find it baffling that a man in Mr Lungu’s position could be saying, without shame, that under his reign he did not interfere in the decisions of the Judiciary. We recall that when Mr Lungu threatened judges, many organisations, including LAZ, TIZ, NGOCC and other prominent citizens condemned him and called on the court to hold him in contempt. When he comes back to the political arena to fool Zambians that he was a respecter of the rule of law, these organisations should remind him that he is a liar.

The truth is that Mr Lungu threatened the Constitutional Court and forced judges to declare him eligible to contest future elections. What he did is equivalent to Mr Hakainde Hichilema telling judges today that if they rule in favour of Mr Lungu, there would be chaos in the country. So it is good that the Constitutional Court has decided to hear the former President’s eligibility case.

SPEAKER DON’T DESTORY OUR DEMOCRACTIC SYSTEM- Edwin Lifwekelo

PRESS STATEMENT

11/07 2024

SPEAKER DON’T DESTORY OUR DEMOCRACTIC SYSTEM.

We express serious concerns regarding the integrity of parliamentary processes and the potential manipulation of democratic principles for political gain. The current situation poses a significant threat to the fundamental function of Parliament, which is to provide oversight and uphold the sanctity of democratic processes.

Certain actions, attributed to individuals such as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly risk undermining the integrity of our esteemed institution. These actions jeopardize Parliament’s ability to serve as a check on governmental power and cast doubts on its effectiveness in upholding democratic values and principles.

Furthermore, the expulsion of the 9 Members of Parliament by Deputy Speaker of Parliament sends indispicable negative vibes to our cherished democracy in the country,Madam Speaker, the behavior of your deputy speaker underscores the importance of upholding these values and principles, Any deviation from these standards not only erodes public trust but also undermines the very essence of democratic governance in the country.

It appears that there may be a concerted effort to diminish opposition representation in Parliament, potentially aimed at facilitating the passage of controversial constitutional amendments and legislation. This manipulation of parliamentary dynamics for political gain is deeply troubling and contradicts the core principles of democracy.

We call upon all stakeholders to make Parliament accountable to the people of zambia, Parliament must take a firm stance in upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness within it’s precips ,It is imperative that Parliament remains a bastion of democracy, ensuring that the voices of all citizens are heard and respected through the elected Members of Parliament.

We therefore Comend and salute the high court decision to stay the expulsion of the nine Members of Parliament at this critical juncture, this will undoubtedly shape the legacy of our Parliamentary system and have far-reaching implications for the future of our democracy. We urge all Presiding officers to examine consequences of their actions and prioritize the interests of the nation above all else.

The Patriotic Front Party is therefore extremely disturbed by the expulsion of the 9 MPs from Parliament. Their expulsion is a clear violation of both parliamentary standing orders and privilege rights, as well as the provisions of the Republican Constitution. We call for an immediate reversal of this decision.

We remain committed to upholding the values of democracy and will continue to monitor the situation closely, let us preserve and harness our hard fought democracy.

A CALL TO THE SECRETARY TO THE CABINET ON CIVIL SERVICE ETHICS – Fred M’membe

A CALL TO THE SECRETARY TO THE CABINET ON CIVIL SERVICE ETHICS

We wish to request the Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr Patrick Kangwa, to educate the nation on roles and ethical conduct of civil servants. This is a very humble appeal to Mr Kangwa.

The country is confused with the current happenings. Are civil servants through the ethical code supposed to be engaged in partisan politics? Are civil servants supposed to be aligned to a political party, or they are supposed to be neutral in the execution of their duties? We raise these questions because we have never seen or heard Mr Kangwa as Head of the civil service issue political statements, and yet his juniors are constantly involved in political rhetoric and misconduct.

We believe civil servants are there to serve all citizens of Zambia irrespective of their political affiliations. And the civil service code of ethics and guidelines are clear on these issues. Sadly, Mr Kangwa’s public officers are clearly involved in partisan politics. And most of them are even proud of their actions. Is the civil service an extension of Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND, or it’s an independent government institution?

The truth is, the ongoing political rantings of Mr Kangwa’s civil servants, mostly PSs and DCs would suggest that they are not properly guided and supervised by his office. What actions has he taken against erring civil servants, if any, and most importantly, why is he not taking any action?

Mr Kangwa’s leadership and reputation are at stake here. We all know Mr Kangwa as a humble and respectful gentleman, but the current conduct of his subordinates is an indictment on him as he is seen to be tolerating unprofessional conduct not expected of a professional civil service.

Our appeal is that Mr Kangwa either takes drastic disciplinary measures to curtail the on going political misconduct and overzealousness of his civil servants, or resigns to protect his image if he has been relegated to a ceremonial Secretary to the Cabinet.

Mr Kangwa’s crop of PSs specifically, is the worst Zambia has ever seen, and it is under his watch. Meaning he has allowed them to do as they wish even if they abrogate the civil service code of conduct. It will be helpful for Mr Kangwa to publish the civil service code of conduct for all Zambians to see how they are being disregarded.

It’s not too late for Mr Kangwa to save his reputation by doing the right thing. Typical example: What has his PS for information Mr Thabo Kawana got to do with criminal investigations? Is he not supposed to be working in his ministry instead of visiting detained opposition politicians?

Who is truly in charge of the civil service? Our Constitution says the Secretary to the Cabinet. But actions on the ground seem like he is totally not in charge. If he is not in charge, he must resign rather than taint his good reputation and image that he is known for and has built over years.

Zambia police allows Zimbabweans to demonstrate against Mnangagwa’s inaguration as SADC Chair

10th July 2024

Wezhira Munya

(See attached letter)

The Zimbabwean diaspora in Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, and Zimbabwe will hold demonstrations in Lusaka, Zambia, from tomorrow until Friday (11th and 12th July 2024) against the inauguration of Zanu PF president Emmerson Mnangagwa as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairperson.

The demonstrators, organized under the banner of the SADC Citizens Democratic Society, are led by civic leaders and pro-human rights defenders, with Mr. Trust Ndlovu as the chairperson, Mr. Tangai Marufu as the organizer, and Mr. Peter Maphosa as the secretary-general.

Mr. Ndlovu stated, “During these two-day demonstrations, we are going to present SADC with a petition against Mnangagwa’s inauguration as SADC chairperson and demand that SADC address the issues surrounding the disputed 2023 harmonized elections in Zimbabwe, as well as the persecution of pro-Chamisa opposition figures such as Hon. Jameson Timba and 78 others.”

The majority of Zimbabweans believe that President Nelson Chamisa won the 2023 presidential elections but that Zanu-PF rigged the elections.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, regarded as a true democrat, has allowed the Zimbabwean demonstrations to take place. This strategic move by the demonstrators coincides with the 26th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation (MCO), which will be held in Zambia on July 11, 2024. The MCO meeting will be chaired by Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, MP.

In contrast, the Zimbabwean government has warned its citizens against demonstrating during the upcoming SADC Summit, scheduled for August 17, 2024, in Harare, Zimbabwe. The theme of the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government is “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustained Economic Growth and Development towards an Industrialised SADC.”

The citizens’ demonstration is in response to SADC’s previous declaration that the August 23-24, 2023, general elections in Zimbabwe were not free and fair. The SADC Electoral Observer Mission (SEOM), led by Zambia’s former vice president, Dr. Nevers Mumba, issued a scathing Preliminary Statement highlighting various irregularities, including issues with constituency delimitation, delays in releasing the voters’ roll, restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression, high nomination fees, concerns about judicial independence, the presence of the Forever Associates Zimbabwe (believed to be a front for state intelligence), and biased state media coverage.

Despite these concerns, the Zimbabwean government is preparing for the upcoming SADC Summit, with the construction of hotels and 12 villas worth millions of US dollars to accommodate the SADC leaders, while the majority of Zimbabweans continue to struggle with poverty, high unemployment, low salaries, lack of electricity, water, and medication in hospitals, among other essential needs.

Zambia’s diplomatic fallout with neighboring Zimbabwe stems from remarks that Mnangagwa shared with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a recent visit to Russia, namely the accusation that the U.S. has been militarizing Zambia to consolidate power in the region and isolate Zimbabwe.

Zambia’s Domestic and Foreign Debt Levels Clarified by Financial Expert Noel Nkhoma

Zambia’s Domestic and Foreign Debt Levels Clarified by Financial Expert Noel Nkhoma

Regarding domestic and foreign debt, Nkhoma clarified that at the end of December 2023, domestic debt stood at K232.6 billion, compared to K193 billion at the end of December 2021. This increase in domestic debt has been used to finance the national budget, as Zambia currently has no access to international capital markets. As for foreign debt, it stood at US$14.57 billion at the end of December 2023, compared to US$13.04 billion at the end of December 2021.

In an effort to dispel various political narratives and false reports being peddled ‘by the opposition,’ Infinity Media Hub sat down with renowned economist and financial expert Noel Nkhoma, to provide clarity on the status of grants and loans received by the UPND government between 2022 and 2024.

First, let’s talk about the big numbers. According to Nkhoma, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has so far disbursed a total of US$1.136 billion under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) since August 2022. This includes an initial disbursement of US$187 million in August 2022, followed by subsequent tranches of US$187 million in April 2023, November 2023, and June 2024.

These funds have been utilized for Balance of Payments support and budget support, with 50% allocated to the Bank of Zambia to strengthen the country’s external position and the other 50% used to finance key budgetary expenditures such as the Constituency Development Fund, school grants, social cash transfers, and the procurement of drugs and medical supplies.

In 2023, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) provided Zambia with US$391 million to support the country’s national HIV response, primarily through the purchase of HIV/AIDS drugs and the implementation of various HIV/AIDS programs and initiatives.

The European Union, on the other hand, has allocated €360 million under a seven-year Multi-annual Indicative Programme (MIP) for Zambia, covering the period from 2021 to 2027. These funds will be used for budget support in the health and education sectors, as well as to finance project preparation activities, such as feasibility studies and detailed designs in the health, education, and transport sectors. The EU has earmarked €30 million for disbursement this year as budget support.

Regarding the World Bank’s disbursements, Nkhoma clarified that contrary to assertions, the total disbursement in 2022 was not US$750 million. Instead, the World Bank approved and disbursed US$275 million for the First Macroeconomic Stability, Growth and Competitiveness Development Policy Financing (DPF), which was used to meet planned budget expenditures. Additionally, the World Bank approved US$210 million and US$300 million for the Zambia Devolution Support Programme and the Zambia Growth Opportunities Programme, respectively, with US$50 million and US$73.8 million released so far under these programs. In 2023, the World Bank released a US$125 million grant for the Second Macroeconomic Stability, Growth and Competitiveness Development Policy Financing (DPF-2), which was also used to finance planned budget expenditures.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has also provided support to Zambia. In 2022, the AfDB’s African Development Fund disbursed US$14.7 million, while the AfDB itself disbursed US$68.6 million, primarily for the implementation of ongoing projects in the road, agriculture, energy, and water and sanitation sectors. In 2023, the AfDB’s African Development Fund disbursed US$21.5 million, and the AfDB disbursed US$42.7 million for similar projects.

So easily according to Nkhoma we can say these monies are being used to stabilize the economy, invest in public services, and lay ground work for future growth.

Of course, we will be watching and the public will be watching closely to make sure these funds are used effectively. But the facts show that Zambia is making progress, with the support of its international partners. The key is separating political rhetoric from economic reality.

Nkhoma’s detailed explanations aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the government has utilized the grants and loans received during this period, dispelling the various political narratives and false reports circulating in the public domain.

INDENI IS NOW IMPORTING, SELLING DIESEL – KAPALA

0

ENERGY Minister Peter Kapala has disclosed that Indeni Energy Company is now importing and selling diesel.

And the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Water Development and Tourism on the Implementation of Monthly Fuel Price Reviews in Zambia has urged government to immediately put in place measures to expand storage capacity for fuel, which will act as a buffer to stabilise prices for longer periods.

Meanwhile, Nkana Independent Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu says although he is not an energy expert, he does not agree with UPND’s policies in the fuel sub-sector.

Presenting a report from the Committee, which was adopted by the National Assembly, Tuesday, Mansa PF MP Chitalu Chilufya said government should transform Indeni into a national oil company.

“The committee strongly recommends that Indeni Energy Company participate in the procurement and supply of petroleum products on behalf of the government in order to diversify Zambia’s sources of fuel procurement and reduce the risks associated with complete reliance on the private sector. The committee further recommends that the government considers transforming Indeni Energy Company into a national oil company to enable it to participate in the procurement of fuel in a similar manner to Namco of Namibia.

The committee recommends that the government should reassess the utilisation of the strategic reserve fund and transfer some of its functions such as road works around fuel storage depots and rehabilitation of infrastructure to the Ministry of Infrastructure Housing and Urban Development,” he said.

“Madam Speaker, let me now move to the issue of the monthly price reviews of fuel. The committee notes that the government’s decision to move to a 30-day fuel price cycle has been met with outcry by the business community and the public at large. Even His Excellency the President during the swearing in ceremony of the newly appointed permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy acknowledged the adverse impact of monthly fuel pump price revisions on business operations and directed that the ministry investigates the issue. In view of this, the committee strongly recommends that the government should immediately put measures in place to expand storage capacity for petroleum products which will act as a buffer to stabilise fuel prices for longer periods and ensure a steady supply”.

He said the committee recommended that government enters into government-to-government fuel procurement arrangements, through Indeni.

“The committee further recommends the government considers entering into government to government fuel procurement arrangements through Indeni Energy Company as a national oil company which can help reduce fuel prices by eliminating middlemen, securing bulk pricing and negotiating favourable terms. Madam Speaker, the House may further wish to note that there have been complaints by industry players regarding the lack of transparency in the awarding of contracts for the use of the Tazama Pipeline. In this regard, the committee recommends that government take measures to enhance transparency in procurement within this sector,” said Dr Chilufya.

Debating the report, Mpundu said the country was frequently changing fuel prices because it was operating as a “hand to mouth country in as far as fuel was concerned”.

“For me, I am not an energy expert but I do totally disagree with the policy direction that the UPND government has taken in managing the fuel sub sector. In the wisdom of those that managed this country before us, Madam Speaker, two very important institutions were established: Indeni for the processing of the commingled fuel government used and also Tazama which used to transport that commingled fuel. I think for the record’s sake, it must be understood that at any given time when government used to procure the commingled fuel, a ship would be procured, docks in Dar-es-Salaam, Tazama transports that into Indeni; when that commingled fuel is separated, we used to have at least three months of our fuel needs in the country. The reason why we have to keep changing the prices of fuel every month is because we are now a hand to mouth country in as far as fuel is concerned. And I can challenge anyone – we do not even have sufficient stocks to last a month in Zambia anymore because we have left this sector to the private sector,” said Mpundu.

But adding his voice to the debate, Luena UPND MP Mubita Anakoka said the decision to move the fuel adjustment exercise to a monthly review cycle was based on sound logic.

“Madam Speaker, it is not in dispute that the cost of fuel is a major input to our economic reality and the decision to move the fuel adjustment to a monthly review regime is certainly based on sound logic and the people of Luena agree with it. But in so doing, Madam Speaker, we will appreciate in a few minutes the challenges that come with frequent reviews of the price of fuel…What are the intervening measures that we should put in place if physical storage is an issue? We must be innovative and think about financial storage,” said Anakoka.

“How can we create storage in order to minimise the impact of fuel price adjustments on a monthly basis? One of the options, Madam Speaker, the people of Luena would like to submit is let’s consider a self-subsidising mechanism where the price of fuel is set at a price higher than the formula it gives you so that you can accumulate a buffer that gives you an opportunity to only trigger the adjustments only when a certain threshold is breached. That way, we could get to the 60 days or even 90 days price adjustment mechanism. It is something we would like to submit to the Minister of Energy to consider seriously. Let’s look at the numbers and see if that is achievable while we are working on making use of the storage facilities that were constructed around the country”.

In his response to the report and various debates, Kapala said his ministry was in receipt of various proposals from stakeholders on the need to shift to quarterly fuel price review cycles.

“Madam Speaker, before I go to my prepared response, I wish to inform the House that we find ourselves in this unfortunate situation because we inherited a bankrupt treasury. We inherited a legacy debt which has now accumulated to over $800 million, so that is why we have got this problem. We appreciate the fact that yes, government has to play a role and I can inform the House that Indeni has started participating in the importation and selling [of] diesel,” said Kapala.

“Madam Speaker, allow me to also mention that the current monthly review of fuel prices creates an opportunity for government to earn its taxes from the fuel prices and there is no accumulation of arrears. In addition, the review of prices monthly is in line with international best practices in fuel pricing. The ministry is cognizant of the challenges associated with the monthly pricing reviews and has continued to explore other price adjustment mechanisms that could result in less disruptive effects on economic and business planning but also result in prices that are cost reflective to ensure security of supply. In line with the presidential directive, the ministry has received proposals from stakeholders on the need to change to quarterly review mechanisms. A report will soon be submitted to this August House as soon as the review process is

mayor of Marseille has publicly urged the city’s football club not to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United

0

The mayor of Marseille has publicly urged the city’s football club not to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, insisting he does not want his club ‘shamed by someone who h!ts his wife’.

This comes after a bid that could reach about £27m was accepted for the Manchester United forward.

The Manchester United star, who has not played for the club since he was arrested in January 2022 for allegations of attempted r@pe, ass@ult, and coercive behaviour, spent a season on loan at Getafe last campaign after the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service and the Red Devils completed their own internal investigation.

After impressing at Getafe, scoring 10 goals and winning the club’s Player of the Season award during his loan spell, Greenwood has attracted interest from Marseille following the arrival of their new manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The former Brighton boss vowed to ‘publicly defend’ Greenwood if he signs for the club amid controversy over his potential move.

But left-wing French politician and mayor of Marseille Benoit Payan has opposed the signing, describing his alleged charges as ‘unspeakable and unacceptable’.

He told RMC Sport: ‘Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable. H!tting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me. Abusing his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man and he cannot have his place on this team.

‘The values of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It’s a shame. I will ask Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don’t want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife.

‘Olympique de Marseille is more than a club. It is a spirit, and there is no place for those who behave in this way, for those who commit this kind of crime and offence.

‘It is unbearable. I cannot imagine for a second that Pablo Longoria would make this major mistake.’

Greenwood, who has continually denied any wrongdoing, said in a statement upon leaving Manchester United last August: ‘I want to start by saying I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and I know people will think the worst.

‘I was brought up to know that violence or abuse in any relationship is wrong, I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February I was cleared of all charges.

‘However, I fully accept I made mistakes in my relationship, and I take my share of responsibility for the situations which led to the social media post.’

After concluding their internal probe, Manchester United’s statement read: ‘The club has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood.

‘Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped. Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights, and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible.

‘This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.

‘Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.’

FIC freezes 27 Bank accounts over Money laundering

0

TWENTY-SEVEN freezing orders were last year issued on 27 commercial bank accounts with a cumulative balance of USD 2.8 million and K126.5 million.

According to the Financial Intelligence Centre(FIC), the basis for the freezing orders was suspected money laundering.

Additionally, the FIC issued three freezing orders for three commercial bank accounts with a cumulative balance of K31.1 million in 2022.

In its latest report, the Centre said the freezing orders are issued to facilitate investigations by law enforcement agencies.

“Section 10(3) of the FIC Act grants the Director General the authority to order a reporting entity to freeze an account or suspend a transaction if there is reasonable suspicion of money laundering, financing of terrorism, proliferation, or other serious offenses. The freezing of an account or suspension of a transaction can last for a maximum of 15 days,” the report stated.

The Centre said upon receipt of a freezing or suspension order, a reporting entity must, for the period specified in the order, stop all activities or suspend the specified transaction on the concerned account, with the exception of credits being received into that account.

“However, it must be noted that the minimum requisite conditions for the FIC to exercise this power to either freeze an account or suspend a transaction is that the Director General must reasonably suspect that a transaction relates to money laundering, financing of terrorism, or proliferation. It is noteworthy that the freezing of an account or suspension of a transaction is not absolute. Section 10(4) outlines the process for challenging the Director General’s decision to freeze an account or suspend a transaction.

It allows an aggrieved party, after 72 hours of the Director General placing an order to freeze an account or suspend a transaction, to apply to a Judge in Chambers to have it discharged and at the same time serve a notice on the Director General to join the proceedings. Notwithstanding the legal recourse being sought by an aggrieved party through the already explained application to a Judge in Chambers, the freezing or suspension order remains in effect until the Judge determines otherwise,” the report reads in part.

MANSA PROTESTS: There’s no good reason for the UPND market chairman to attack someone for simply playing Alebwelelapo music – Fred M’membe

MANSA PROTESTS

The protests in Mansa today responded to a growing UPND leaders’ and cadres’ intolerance and the taking of the law into their own hands. They think they are an extension of the police and can apprehend and detain anyone at will.

There’s no good reason for the UPND market chairman to attack someone for simply playing Alebwelelapo music. We may likely see more of this if the UPND and the police do not change their ways.

What happened in Mansa today is an expected reaction to the rise of UPND supremacy and anti-opposition in policing, which has resulted in egregious violations of opposition members’ human and civil rights.

This stifling of protest paves the road for authoritarian rule, unchecked abuses of power and democratic backsliding, and setting us on a collision course with the democratic ideals and ethical principles enshrined in our Constitution and embraced by the international community. It also forecloses the possibility of peaceful resolution of the policing crisis by shutting down an effective tool to agitate change. Whether they like it or not, change will come, Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND will go – baleya.

Without condoning or encouraging violence and destruction, we salute the people of Mansa for standing up to injustice and violations of fundamental freedoms.

We should celebrate and honour the actions of all who courageously stand up against injustice instead of targeting and terrorising those who continue to speak out for the individuals who are not able to do so for themselves.

….urges young people to be supportive of each other when voicing out their concerns

Lusaka… Wednesday July 10, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

The Zambians for Unity Peace and Development (ZUPED) has condemned the àrrésting of young Fix-Zesco pr0testors by the police today.

ZUPED President Ronnie Jere has also called on young people to be supportive of each other whenever they are voicing out their concerns.

Mr Jere said the law allows individuals to conduct a peaceful prótést saying those who were protesting at Zesco were very peaceful.

“We want to condemn the àrresting of those young people who were prótesting against Zesco today. Our Republican constitution provides room for peaceful prótests as long as they are not a threat to peace and done within the confinement of the law,” he said.

“Peaceful prótests are a way where citizens can express their dissatisfaction over something. And in this vein, the young people saw it fit to conduct a peaceful prótest over load-shedding being done by power utility company, Zesco. We also call on young people to be supportive of each whenever they are not happy about something, it’s their constitutional right.”

Mr Jere said what the young protestors were doing was just to show their dissatisfaction over the continued long hours of load-shedding which has affected a lot of things.

“If load-shedding is affecting small business holders, it’s affecting SMEs, industries and other wheels of the economy, it is important that we the citizens voice out. One way is through a peaceful prótest and that is why we are saying there is nothing wrong for individuals to conduct a peaceful prótest,” he concluded.

Police in Lusaka have arrested four people who attempted to prótest against loadshedding at ZESCO Headquarters in Lusaka.

The four suspects were picked at ZESCO Headquarters around 08:30 hours

They were identified as Rizchy Pataky, aged 35, Thomson Luzandi, aged 35, Muputa Ngalande, aged 32 and Nawa Sitali, 25 all of Lusaka.

They are detained in custody for the offence of Idle and Disorderly conduct.

High Court stays Speaker Moyo’s Expulsion of 9 Members of Parliament

Lusaka, Zambia – July 10, 2024

The High Court of Zambia has granted leave to apply for judicial review to nine Members of Parliament who challenged the decision declaring their seats vacant. The ruling, issued by the Honourable Judge of the High Court, came after an application and supporting affidavit were presented by the lead applicant, Hon. Brian Mundubile, on behalf of the other eight parliamentarians.

The applicants, who include Hon. Stephen Kampyongo, Hon. Christopher Kang’ombe, Hon. Ronald Kaoma Chitotela, Hon. Remember Chanda Mutale, Hon. Mulenga Francis Fube, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya, Hon. Nickson Chilangwa, and Hon. Emmanuel Mpakata Musonda, contested the decision made on July 3, 2024, by the second speaker of the National Assembly. The decision declared their parliamentary seats vacant, triggering immediate legal action.

During the hearing, counsel for the applicants argued that the decision was unlawful and sought the court’s intervention to stay its effects until a thorough judicial review could be conducted. The High Court, upon reviewing the affidavit and considering the submissions, issued an order granting leave for judicial review and staying the implementation of the decision to vacate the seats.

In the ruling, the Honourable Judge stated, “The applicants are hereby granted leave to apply for judicial review forthwith. The decision dated 3rd July 2024, made by the second speaker of the National Assembly declaring the nine parliamentary seats vacant, is hereby stayed pending the determination of these proceedings.”

This stay means that the nine MPs will retain their seats until the court makes a final ruling on the matter. The decision is a temporary reprieve for the parliamentarians and a crucial step in ensuring their voices are heard in a judicial setting.

The legal battle now shifts focus to the substantive judicial review, where the court will delve deeper into the merits of the case. The outcome will have significant implications for parliamentary procedures and the broader political landscape in Zambia.

This case underscores the importance of judicial oversight in the governance process and the critical role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of elected officials.

Further developments in this case will be closely monitored, as they hold the potential to shape the future of parliamentary democracy in Zambia.
