Myanmar rebel group claims to be in possession of Indian border town

0

Rebels in western Myanmar say they have taken control of a key town on a main road to India from the army.

The Arakan Army (AA), which is one of three armed groups, started a big attack against the military in October. They say they have now taken control of Paletwa in Chin State.

The group said on its messaging app that there are no more military camps in the whole Paletwa area.

Myanmar’s army has not said anything.

Delhi will pay close attention to the changes happening in Paletwa, which is near the border of Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. The town is being improved by a big project funded by India to make it easier for people to travel to and from the area.

The AA is a new but well-equipped group of fighters from Myanmar. They have been fighting against the military in Rakhine State and parts of Chin State for a few years and have been making progress in their battles. Even before the army took control in February 2021, AA soldiers had made big progress in Rakhine. Two years ago, it said it controlled 60% of the state.

During the 2021 coup, the army decided to stop fighting with a group that was not involved in the coup, so they could focus on stopping anyone who was against it.

Last October, the AA said it was fighting against military rule with other groups and started to attack the military, which was already stretched thin by the opposition to its coup in many parts of the country.

In the last 11 weeks, the alliance has beaten the military along the border with China many times.

– Last Saturday, the AA took control of the last military post in the Paletwa township on the other side of the country. The hilltop base at Meewa had been difficult for them to take in 2020, but they were able to take it after 42 days of fighting now.

The AA now controls the port of Paletwa on the Kaladan River, which means they also control the roads and waterways to the Indian border. This gives them a base to plan more attacks in Rakhine State.

Losing any of the big towns in Rakhine to the rebels would be a really bad hit for the military’s power. They are using planes and helicopters with guns to stop the AA from getting to the town of Kyauktaw. Kyauktaw is on the main road that connects the Rakhine capital Sittwe with the rest of Myanmar.

We don’t know what the AA will do next. It may want to keep its progress and prevent more people from leaving. The group wants to be in charge of themselves in a country that is part of a bigger group, and they think it’s better to have a new elected government instead of military control.

After Paletwa fell, the main question is if the leaders can make their soldiers feel better and convince them to keep fighting against the opposition from different places.

Italian Culture Minister investigated over painting theft

0

A minister in Italy has been accused of having and showing a stolen painting from the 1600s, but he says it’s not true.

The newest claims against a member of Italy’s government focus on Vittorio Sgarbi, who is a well-known art critic.

Mr Sgarbi is being investigated for hiding stolen things after putting the painting in a show in 2021.

In 2013, “The Capture of Saint Peter” was stolen.

Rutilio Manetti, a painter who followed Baroque style like Caravaggio, used to have his painting shown in a castle in northern Italy, in Piedmont.

Mr Sgarbi, who is on TV and has a history of using bad language and lying about people, is accused of changing the painting by putting a candle in the corner to hide where it came from.

The politician said he discovered the job while renovating a house his mother bought over twenty years ago. He says the painting is the real one, but the one that was stolen in 2013 was just a fake.

The accusations were found in a report by the TV show ‘Report’ on the Italian channel Rai. The person who owns the castle said that the painting was stolen in 2013. She also mentioned that one of Mr. Sgarbi’s friends had come to see the property before and wanted to buy the art piece.

The report also said that a friend of the politician gave a damaged painting called “The Capture of Saint Peter” to someone who fixes paintings later. It was said that the hole had the same shape as a piece of the canvas that was cut out of the Piedmont castle frame in 2013.

In 2021, Mr Sgarbi showed the restored painting with a candle added in the top corner.

The junior minister is being accused of owning an expensive painting by a French artist. The painting, worth €5m, was taken by police in Montecarlo. Mr Sgarbi is being looked into by a lawyer for sending the painting out of the country unlawfully. He said that it is a copy and that he did not own it. The BBC tried to talk to Mr Sgarbi, but he didn’t answer.

Other political parties want Mr. Sgarbi to be fired. The Five Star Movement will propose a motion in parliament to remove him from his position.

The Italian government is embarrassed again because a member of the ruling party is being investigated for bringing a gun to a New Year’s Eve party and accidentally shooting someone. Emanuele Pozzolo says he didn’t shoot the gun, but the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has stopped him from working for now.

MsMeloni’s political party, Brothers of Italy, is doing well in the polls and her alliance with other right-wing parties seems strong at the moment.

Before the European elections in June, all parties will try to take advantage of any weaknesses or opportunities they can find. She has already publicly argued with her coalition partner Matteo Salvini.

This year, politics in Italy could become even more unpleasant. The prime minister wants to avoid having three scandals happening at the same time.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin discharged from hospital

0

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is out of the hospital and will work from home while he gets better from treatment for prostate cancer.

His choice to wait before telling his co-workers and the White House about his sickness made people upset and led to three investigations.

The 70-year-old had to go to the intensive care unit on 1 January because of problems after a surgery in December.

His doctors said he should get better soon and be back to normal.

Doctors at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said that Secretary Austin is doing well and getting stronger.

They said his prostate cancer was treated early and worked well. They also said his chances of getting better are really good and he doesn’t need any more treatment.

The defense secretary is an important person in the US military and is right under the president in the chain of command.

In December, Mr. Austin had a small surgery to treat his prostate cancer. He went back to the hospital on New Year’s Day because the procedure had caused problems.

High-ranking military officials and the White House did not find out that Mr. Austin was very sick until three days after he was readmitted.

The fact that it was kept secret raised worries about security and transparency. As a result, three investigations have been started to look into how his health crisis was managed.

President Joe Biden said he still trusts his secretary to lead, but he wishes the secretary had been more honest about how sick he was.

Mr Austin said sorry for not telling people the right information.

He continued to work in his job while he was getting better. Last week, Mr. Austin gave permission for many attacks on Houthi fighters in Yemen from his hospital bed in the Red Sea.

On Monday, he said thank you to the doctors and nurses who took care of him.

“Now, as I keep getting better and working from home, I really want to get better soon and go back to the Pentagon,” he said.

The Pentagon said he can use secure communication to work from home.

SEVEN FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT STATE HOUSE, LUSAKA, ZAMBIA

SINCE 1964, State House in Lusaka has been regarded as the official residence of the country’s head of state. But for many Zambians they are several facts they don’t know of this historic building that was opened in 1935.

1. Money to build State House in Lusaka was donated by Alfred Beit. (a director in the British South Africa Company, (BSAC), In his will he set up the Beit Trust through which he bequeathed large sums of money for infrastructure development in the Northern Rhodesia. Some of the monies in his will were used to build Independence Avenue, Cairo Road, Lusaka City Airport, Supreme Court of Zambia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Zambia, Cabinet Office and the European Hospital (UTH), Kafue Bridge, Luangwa Bridge, Beit Bridge on Zimbabwe/Zambia Border and Beit Bridge on Zimbabwe/South Africa border.)

2. State House was designed by renowned British architect Sir Walcot also famous for designing government buildings in South Africa.

3. State House was constructed in 1935 to serve as the official residence of the governor of Northern Rhodesia.

4. During the colonial era, State House was known as government house and served as the official residence of colonial governors of Northern Rhodesia.

5. 13 colonial governors lived in State House since 1935, with Major Sir Hubert Young being the first occupant and Sir Evelyn Hone was the last governor to live in State House. During this time one governor by the name of Sir John Maybin died in office on 9th April 1941 and he is the only governor to be buried at Aylmer May Cemetery in Rhodes Park, Lusaka.

6. Six Zambian presidents have lived in State House since 1964, with two dying in office. (Late Mwanawasa, 2008, Late Sata,2014)………..additional info, added by admin in 2024: President Hichilema took over in 2021 but so far he only works from there.

7. In 1974, President Kaunda then did a security upgrade to State House. President Kaunda also built Nkwazi House (Official residence of the President) and the prestigious 19-hole golf course.

the invalidating of the Patriotic Front candidate in Kampamba Ward was outside the law- Tribunal

ECZ RETURNING OFFICER WAS WRONG TO REFUSE PATRIOTIC FRONT CANDIDATURE

…the invalidating of the Patriotic Front candidate in Kampamba Ward was outside the law…

The Tribunal set up to enquire into the nominations in Kampamba Ward election in Mpika District has found that the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s Returning Officer was wrong to invalidate the nominations of the Patriotic Front, Aaron Kabanda.
The Tribunal also stated that the Returning Officer must accept or reject nominations there and then and not later in the day or next day.

Below are the Orders from the Tribunal;

“Therefore, we order as follows”;

  1. We dismiss the relief that the Nominations papers of the Petitioner be
declared valid, as this Tribunal was not called to inquire into the validity of the Nomination.

The Tribunal was called to inquire into the alleged
breaches by the Returning Officer on receipt of the nomination papers and
not the validation or lack, therefore.

  1. It follows, therefore, that we can not grant the relief for the 1st Respondent to place the name of the Petitioner on the ballot paper to allow the
Petitioner to participate in the election.
  2. We also find that the relief that the returning officer’s failure to
communicate Petitioner’s rejection a day after filing is in breach of
Regulation 18 of the Electoral Process Rules as illegal and null and void is
    without merit.

This is so, as the 2021 amendment to regulation 18 (5) took away the requirement for the notification in writing to be made
immediately to the candidate.

Therefore, this claim fails.

  1. In the circumstances, the Petition partly succeeds. We have found that
the procedure that was followed by the returning officer to invalidate the
Nomination for the Petitioner was outside the set Provisions of the Law and Regulations, and is therefore null and void. It is hereby set aside.
  2. We also find that the failure by the returning officer to particularize the
reasons in the letter of notification to the Candidate was in breach of the
    Regulations.

‘Therefore, this claim succceds.

TB Joshua exposé: How the disgraced preacher faked his miracles

0

By Charlie Northcott, Helen Spooner & Tamasin Ford | BBC Africa Eye |

The BBC unmasks, for the first time, how the late Nigerian televangelist TB Joshua faked the miracles that drew millions of people to his church.

The preacher, who is accused of widespread abuse and torture spanning almost 20 years, founded his Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan) in Lagos more than three decades ago. His meteoric rise to fame was closely tied to his self-professed divine powers and his supposed ability to heal the sick.

The theatrical healings – showing the physically disabled walking and on one occasion purporting to resurrect a dead person – were filmed. Along with testimonies of those he claimed to have cured, they were then sent on VHS tapes to churches across the world.

In 2004, Nigeria’s broadcast regulator banned stations from airing the supposed miracles of pastors on live terrestrial TV, prompting Joshua to launch Emmanuel TV on satellite and then online. His global television and social media empire became one of the most successful Christian networks in the world.

His purported miracles were broadcast to millions across Europe, the Americas, South-East Asia and Africa. His YouTube channel had hundreds of millions of views.

But Joshua, who died in 2021 aged 57, was a fraud. The BBC’s investigation, involving more than 25 church insiders from the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, the US, South Africa and Germany, unpicks six ways in which he tricked worshippers.

1: The emergency department

An exclusive section of the church, named the “emergency department”, was responsible for making the so-called miracles look real.

This is where the sick, who came to be healed, would be screened, and where the team would decide who should be filmed and prayed for by Joshua.

Agomoh Paul, who supervised the department for 10 years – receiving direct instructions from Joshua, told the BBC that the team was “trained by medical doctors”.

He is a former disciple – one of an elite group of dedicated followers who lived with the pastor inside the Scoan compound.

“Any cancerous situation, they send them away. Then people who had normal open wounds that can heal, they bring them in, to present as cancer,” he says.

Only a select group of trusted disciples were allowed to work in the emergency department. They would write placards for each follower to hold, detailing their made-up or exaggerated ailments. When it was time to meet Joshua, they would stand in line in front of the cameras and be “healed”.

“It was a complicated system. Not all disciples knew what was happening. It was a secret,” Mr Paul says.

2: Drugs

Every foreign visitor who came to the church to be healed had to fill out a medical report, detailing their illness and the medication they were currently prescribed.

They would be told to stop taking them, but Joshua would order pharmacists to procure the same medicine.

Without their knowledge they would “put those drugs in their fruit drinks,” explains Mr Paul, who said people would be urged to drink the cocktail that had been blessed by Joshua.

This meant while visitors were residing at Scoan they would not become unwell and would believe in the divine healing powers of their pastor.

In the 1990s when HIV/Aids had reached epidemic levels across parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Joshua told visitors to stop taking their antiretroviral medication when they returned home.

“I know people died because they didn’t take their medicine, and it’s difficult to live with that,” admits a former disciple, who asked not to be named.

South African Tash Ford, now 49, went to Lagos in 2001 in the hope of having her failing kidney healed, but was told to stop taking her drugs.

“It was the promise that… you could supernaturally receive a new kidney,” she told the BBC.

At the time she had already had two kidney transplants. Ms Ford says the disciples said: “Stop taking your medication and just believe.”

She did believe she had been healed. But when she got home, after four weeks of not taking her medicine, she went into renal failure and was admitted to hospital.

The medics initially managed to save her kidney but eventually it stopped working and she had to have kidney dialysis for more than six years before having a third transplant in 2011.

3: Brainwashing

Ms Ford says when she was at Scoan she never had any doubts: “I honestly thought we were seeing miracles. I literally couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I saw someone walk out of a wheelchair.”

The theatricality seemed to draw everyone in.

The former disciple told the BBC that after being screened, the chosen followers would be told to “exaggerate their problems so that God can heal you and exaggerate your healing”.

“The people, themselves, are clearly being manipulated,” she says.

The church had a ready supply of wheelchairs which followers were coaxed to use. They were warned they would not be healed unless they sat in one when they met Joshua.

“We are telling them: ‘If you come out there, and walk with your legs, Papa will not pray for you. You need to shout: “Man of God, help me, I cannot walk,”‘” says Mr Paul.

Another former disciple, Bisola, who spent 14 years living at Scoan, accompanied Joshua on his National Healing Campaign at the Church of Our Saviour in Singapore in 2006.

She says she saw people in wheelchairs try to stand up after the pastor told the congregation “he had released faith into the stadium”.

However, these people had not been screened and she saw them fall down. “I was crying. I was crying for them,” she says.

The emergency department workers themselves were also being manipulated. They were subjected to horrifying ordeals, including rape, physical violence and torture, and lived by a strict set of rules – forbidden to sleep for more than a few hours at a time.

Now they struggle to understand how and why they continued to follow the pastor’s orders.

“TB Joshua told me: ‘Don’t worry, we use this thing to build people’s faith in Christ.’ I wasn’t having in mind that I was actually doing something wrong. I thought I was doing something that would help to build the faith of people in the church,” says Mr Paul.

For Ms Ford, it has meant she has lost all faith in organised religion: “I wish we had known that it was all a farce, that it wasn’t true. I was manipulated into believing that what the prophet was doing was supernatural, miracles, wonders, signs.”

4: Bribes

Some disciples allege they were charged with finding people who needed money to pretend to be sick.

When they performed healing crusades in countries outside Nigeria, they would go to the poorer areas of a city to search for people living in poverty.

“We would say: ‘We need you to just act out this particular scene and we will pay you,’” another former disciple told the BBC.

“We get them into hotels, we get them cleaned up. They come, they do what they do. We give them their money and the rest is history,” she says.

Before the service, they would tell Joshua which rows they had planted these people, and what clothes they were wearing, so he would know who to perform his supposed miracles on.

“People would be brought in just to pretend that they were healed,” she says.

5: Fake medical certificates

The “healing miracles” broadcast to millions regularly included medical reports stating people had been cured of HIV/Aids and diseases like cancer.

Doctors were interviewed on camera confirming the cures.

In 2000 Nigerian journalist Adejuwon Soyinka reported that these medical certificates were fake, but Joshua quashed his investigation and it went nowhere.

To this day some people believe they were healed, but insiders say it was all a performance on the late preacher’s part.

“The whole thing is stage-managed and faked. It’s faked,” says Mr Paul, describing Joshua as an “evil genius”.

There was nothing that took place in the compound that Joshua did not know about, he explains.

“TB Joshua was the one who masterminded the whole manipulation,” he says.

6: Video manipulation

The “miracles” were filmed and then edited to make it look like the supposed healing had happened instantaneously. Before and after footage was spliced together to show his purported miraculous powers, but in reality the films were shot months, or even a year, apart.

“All you see on TV is the before and after, you don’t know the time space,” says Bisola, who was Scoan’s chief video editor for five years and worked on Emmanuel TV. Like other insiders interviewed by the BBC, she opted to only use her first name.

“What people see… is not real. It is fraud,” she says about the clips and broadcasts she oversaw.

“I am speaking now as someone who was an insider,” she says.

Anything they did not want viewers to see was “cut away”. It was all “organised”, she says.

The BBC contacted Scoan with the allegations in this investigation. It did not respond to them, but denied previous claims against Joshua.

“Making unfounded allegations against Prophet TB Joshua is not a new occurrence… None of the allegations was ever substantiated,” it said.

This Africa Eye investigation was conducted by Charlie Northcott, Helen Spooner, Maggie Andresen, Yemisi Adegoke and Ines Ward.

Nauru severs relations with Taiwan in favour of China

0

One of the few countries that still supported Taiwan has decided to be friends with China instead, after Taiwan elected a new president.

Nauru, a very small island in Micronesia, was only one of 12 countries that had a relationship with Taipei.

In recent years, Beijing has been persuading countries to stop being friends with Taiwan, because they believe Taiwan is part of China.

Taiwan says that the recent defeat is connected to the election outcomes from the weekend, which made China upset.

In the election, people chose William Lai as their new president. China called him a “troublemaker” because he has supported Taiwan’s independence. China doesn’t like this.

Taiwan officials said that Nauru’s announcement is not just China’s way of getting back at our elections, but also a direct challenge to the global order. Nauru’s government said it will now see Taiwan as part of China, not its own separate country.

During a press conference on Monday, Taipei’s deputy foreign minister Tien Chung-kwang said that China is using the recent changes in Nauru’s politics to give them money in exchange for support.

China believes it can control Taiwan using these methods, but I disagree. The world has seen that Taiwan is becoming more democratic. Tien said that if Beijing keeps using bad ways to take away Taiwan’s diplomatic relationships, democratic countries won’t accept it.

However, he still is very focused on making sure Taiwan is not isolated by China on the international stage. He is keeping a close watch for any further actions from China.

China thinks that the island of Nauru, which has 23 million people, belongs to them and will be under their control in the future. They are happy with Nauru’s decision.

China’s foreign ministry said Nauru’s government decision to be friends with China again shows that most people want there to be only one China and that this is a growing trend.

This is not the first time Nauru has stopped working with Taiwan. Taiwan sees itself as different from mainland China and has its own constitution and elected leaders.

In 2002, Nauru changed its alliance to China, but later in May 2005, it went back to being friends with Taiwan.

Experts also told the BBC that Nauru’s decision was not surprising.

Anna Powles, an associate professor in security studies at Massey University in New Zealand, said that it has been possible for a while that Nauru would stop recognizing Taiwan and start recognizing China instead.

Australia moved quickly to offer a treaty to help people from Tuvalu because they were worried that Tuvalu might start supporting China instead.

“She also said there were worries about Nauru. ”

Mihai Sora, a researcher at an Australian think tank, said that China is always trying to reduce Taiwan’s power, especially in the Pacific where many small countries are trying to develop.

Because Taiwan doesn’t have many friends in the world, each one it does have is really important for its independence. China may keep trying to weaken that.

CORRUPTION: EVEN THEIR FRIENDS HAVE REALIZED THEY’RE STEALING BIG-Fred M’membe

CORRUPTION: EVEN THEIR FRIENDS HAVE REALIZED THEY’RE STEALING BIG

The Swedish Ambassador to Zambia has joined the many voices that have raised alarm over the rampant cases of corruption in the country.

We are not surprised that even their friends are also coming to the same conclusions that we have drawn, that corruption is high under Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s puppet and tribal UPND regime.

We have said it before, and we are saying it now that these people are stealing big, and they do not have what it takes to wage a genuine fight against corruption.

This UPND government is corrupt to the core; it is reeking with corruption in every pore. It’s rotten from the bottom to the top, or rather from top to bottom. It’s a very corrupt puppet tribal regime, and they are not even as clever and sophisticated as they seem to think. These are shameless gluttons who don’t even care about the people who voted for them.

Mr Hichilema is fully aware that he is leading a rotten government, and the rot starts with him. No wonder people like Mr Stanley Kakubo can have the luxury of resigning from government instead of being fired. Mr Hichilema shielded the disgraced Mr Kakubo from taking a walk of shame because he knows that he is not the only corrupt person in this administration.

To this day, Mr Kakubo has not been arrested and prosecuted for his suspected involvement in corruption, and nothing has been seized from him as a proceeds of crime.

When it comes to fighting corruption, Mr Hichilema is paralyzed by the fact that he has no moral right to condemn or even take decisive action against his lieutenants in government because everyone is literally involved in some illegal activity in one way or another.

The endless corruption scandals that have rocked this government are a reminder that the country is in corrupt hands and needs a breather. It is clear that this is a government of the thieves, for the thieves, and by the thieves.

So, how can Mr Hichilema be expected to genuinely fight corruption when there is so much grand corruption and looting surrounding him, and involving him?

We have said before that any meaningful fight against corruption in this country has to start with an investigation of Mr Hichilema’s own dealings in almost every sector of our economy like mining, fuel, fertilizer, insurance, grain imports and exports, property and real estate, construction and manufacturing, among many others.

There is a need to investigate Mr Hichilema. He should be able to answer questions about his dealings. Without doing so, the fight against corruption becomes hypocritical, a facade and meaningless.

Any meaningful fight against corruption must start with an investigation of Mr Hichilema’s business interests.

Mr Musa Mwenye, the chairman of the Anti Corruption Commission and the US ambassador to Zambia, Mr Michael Gonzales, have emphatically demanded that Mr Hichilema declares all his assets. Why?

The day Mr Hichilema is made to fully disclose all his business interests, without being able to conceal anything, will mark the beginning of the end of his presidency and the beginning of his journey to prison. Even Mr Hichilema knows this too well no wonder the resistance.

The amount of systemic corruption and plunder that is being facilitated by State House is terrifying and confirms the sad reality that this presidency is a disaster and a failure!

The truth and the reality currently, is that most of the bribery, embezzlement, illicit enrichment, trading influence and all manner of abuses and white- collar financial and economic crimes that we are witnessing are engineered by State House.

The presidency is the command post of grand corruption and looting of public resources. Under this presidency, procurement procedures and regulations have been totally paralyzed and they are going about their daily business with impunity, and without any oversight or regard for the moral, political and economic effects of their actions. This presidency is the most corrupt in the history of this country, and the presidential aides are the most incompetent, shady, and pathetically dishonest and corrupt.

With the presidency organizing and perpetuating this cancerous culture of corruption, it is wishful thinking to expect this regime to wage a relentless campaign against corruption and succeed.

Crooks of all shapes and sizes have been assembled and unleashed on the people and the state coffers by Mr Hichilema.

This is not a way to govern a country.

The Dangers of Instant Mob Justice in Cattle Theft Cases

The Dangers of Instant Mob Justice in Cattle Theft Cases

By Daimone Siulapwa
This weekend, disturbing videos depicting instances of instant justice and torture against suspected cattle thieves have surfaced, casting a dark shadow on the principles of justice and human rights in Zambia.

While the fight against cattle theft is essential, it is imperative that such actions be condemned by peace-loving citizens and addressed through legal channels.

The foundational principle of our legal system is that all citizens are equal before the law and presumed innocent until proven guilty including the suspeted cattle thieves.

The rise of mob justice not only defies this fundamental tenet but also poses a serious threat to the rule of law and the due process of justice.

The graphic nature of these incidents, witnessed in viral videos, is a cause for concern as it not only undermines the integrity of our legal system but also raises questions about the effectiveness of proper investigations.

Instant justice often leads to hasty conclusions, potentially resulting in the punishment of innocent individuals.

To counter the issue of cattle theft, the UPND government took a proactive step by passing a law that deems such cases non-bailable.

This legislative move has shown positive results, with a noticeable decline in theft and reported cases.

However, the success of these efforts should not be overshadowed by the rise of vigilantism and instant justice.

It is important to emphasize that anyone found engaging in mob justice must be swiftly brought before the law to face charges related to their actions, regardless of their loses.

In the same vain, stiff and long sentences must be guven to cattle thieves who are found guilty and they must also be made to pay back using whatever means available including lose of their fixed assets.

Upholding the principles of justice requires a commitment to holding individuals accountable for their deeds through proper legal proceedings.

Law enforcement, particularly in Southern Province where these incidents have been reported, must remain vigilant.

The police play a vital role in maintaining order and ensuring that citizens do not overstep their boundaries by taking on roles that should be reserved for trained professionals.

Allowing overzealous citizens to usurp police powers jeopardizes the delicate balance needed for a functioning and just society.

Furthermore, while the fight against cattle theft is of great importance, it must be conducted within the boundaries of the law.

Instant justice not only undermines the credibility of our legal system but also endangers innocent lives.

The government’s efforts to address cattle theft through legislation are commendable, and it is now imperative to ensure that the rule of law prevails in dealing with those who seek retribution outside the legal framework.

Let us strive for a society where justice is served through proper channels, upholding the values of fairness and due process.

His money and fame will not change me. I’m not interested in that” – Footballer Sadio Mane’s wife

0

Al Nassar/Senegalese footballer, Sadio Mane’s wife has spoken for the first time about her marriage to the footballer insisting that his wealth and fame will not change her ‘humble ways.’

The former Liverpool star married 18-year old Aisha Tamba in an Islamic ceremony on January 7 in Keur Massar, a suburb in the capital city of Dakar, Senegal.

31 year old Mane enjoys the life of a multi-millionaire footballer, earning a staggering £650,000 per week, flying in private jets, a stark contrast to the life his new wife has been used to.

Before now, Aisha lived in a shabby part of Dakar opposite a swamp. According to reports, her house contained about 30 relatives.

His money and fame will not change me. I

Speaking through a relative, she told MailOnline: ‘I am looking forward to my new life and I know that it will be very different. But I do not feel any pressure because Sadio’s fame and money will not change me. This is not what I’m interested in. I will remain a humble person committed to my faith.

‘I’m not used to having so much attention on me because we are a very private family. We don’t like to show off and speak about our personal lives. I am a very down to earth person, this is how I was raised, and nothing will be different just because of this marriage.’

She added: ‘But I’m very honoured to now be Mrs Mane.’

Aisha is expected to join Mane in Saudi Arabia later this year once she finishes her final school exams.

The couple will not be going on honeymoon because Aisha’s father asked her to focus on her studies.

Mane is teammates with Cristiano Ronaldo whose partner Georgina Rodriguez is considered one of the world’s most glamorous WAGs and has more than 55 million followers on Instagram.

But Aisha revealed: ‘I don’t know who she is and I don’t do any social media.’

Relatives revealed that away from schoolwork, Aisha’s spends most of her time studying the Quran and can recite large parts of it.

Her cousin Amadou, who lives in the same house as her told MailOnline: ‘As a family, our number one priority is Islam. We are not interested in all the things that people associate with the life of a wealthy footballer.

‘We are very happy that Aisha has married Sadio but it’s because he’s a humble man, not because he is rich and famous.’

Mane is currently with the Senegal squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

NEW EXPORT TRACKING FRAMEWORK- Fred M’membe

NEW EXPORT TRACKING FRAMEWORK

I think this new concept has not been clearly explained, probably due to its fancy technical name.

This measure is similar to SI33 which was introduced in the early days of the Michael Sata regime, which received severe push back to the extent that it was subsequently withdrawn.

So what is Export Tracking Framework?

All exports will be tracked and ensure that proceeds are paid into Zambian bank accounts. The current banking system allows businesses and individuals to open CFC accounts, which are dollar denominated accounts. So the export proceeds, more likely than not, will be routed into the dollar accounts and held in Dollars.

Tipping Point?

The crucial issue here is whether these dollars will be converted to kwacha or not. Also, it is important to note that Zambia does not have Exchange Controls, so the dollars in the CFC accounts can be held in dollars for as long as the account holder deems it fit. In other jurisdictions, there is an auto conversion period of say 60 days and if you don’t use the dollars they are automatically converted to kwacha which results in positively impacting the money markets as these dollars are now available for use in the money markets. Effectively improving dollar supply.

Holding import dollar proceeds in dollar accounts without conversion into kwacha has no impact on the exchange rate.

If anything, given that we have a liberal exchange control regime, more likely than not, once the dollars have been received, exporters, particularly mining houses, will externalise these proceeds to their central treasury. This results in a zero-sum game and completely neutralizes this policy. It becomes impotent.

It is highly unlikely that the local Kwacha needs for exporters, particularly mines will change as a result of this new policy. As such, funds will come in and then go out.

Also important to note is that VAT refunds to mines in Kwacha provide ready Kwacha for local expenses such as salaries and therefore negates the need to convert dollars from CFC accounts to kwacha.

Currently, CFC accounts have a consolidated balance of over $3 billion which has no impact on the money market until such time that conversion to kwacha happens. In previous years, CFC dollar account balances were around $2 billion. My conclusion is that businesses prefer to convert excess kwacha to dollars to hedge against currency fluctuations, not that trade in dollars has increased and therefore putting more pressure on the exchange rate.

We are highlighting this to CAUTION against pre-mature excitement and celebration as we saw with Debt Restructuring MoU, which was signed with official creditors in June 2022.

If conversions to Kwacha from dollar accounts do not happen, the exchange rate challenges will remain as is the case today. The real solution to the exchange rate still remains in increasing local production and manufacturing capacity and value addition. Export more and reduce dependency on imports.

As patriots, we are just issuing a cautionary statement, the policy framework is welcome, and it is our hope that it brings positive economic benefits to the country, and we will closely monitor the results. The devil is always in the details

How to make Zambians rich- Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

How to make Zambians rich

This preoccupation we have always had with foreign investors and IMF stuff will never make us rich! We need for once to focus on Zambians! Help Zambians get capital both home and abroad! ZDA should be preoccupied with Zambians! We should remove jealousy! Allow people to have money! Discourage law enforcement officers to harass people! Why follow up a person even when there is no complainant? We need to Zambianise our GDP! Chalo chesu chino!

We need to develop a program where we need to develop billionaires! If a Zambian has a small business we go for them using tax authorities and other LEAs? If it is found that one was not paying taxes, put corrective measures to ensure the person complies! Don’t close them down! Half of the small businesses can’t even afford accountants that can help make tax returns because they have to pay a lot of fees to central and local government just to operate!

A country taxing 37% on a person getting $350 salary should forget about removing people out of poverty! What my people at the budget office have forgotten is that when the highest tax band was 35% at k5000 salary, k5000 was $1000! Now $1000 is k26,000 so even the highest tax band should move to that level! One of the principles of a tax system is that it should be flexible! Ours is not! How can government take away 37% on earnings above $350! When will Zambians become entrepreneurs?

We need to start critically analysing things!

Even this cholera thing! We keep on blaming shallow wells! When was the last time Lusaka water built a new sewer pipeline system? The whole of Lusaka survives on soak aways and boreholes when water is plenty in rivers and also we still have ability to build sewer systems! Today you are crying about cholera? Next after this nomba nimpele (scabies)!

We are too much serious with mediocrity and mediocre at serious things! Entertaining clowns that were clobbered in the east instead of discussing serious issues and people can will inspire us and help us slip away from poverty!

We need to start with reducing the tax burden! Remove all barriers to business! The fees are too high and every government department wants its share! Remove jealous in decision making! These things of politics are useless and don’t come before wealth creation! Let’s have a normal conversation! How can we entertain poverty as a country?

Enough is enough! We need to start getting rich! Ministry of finance should revisit the taxes now and allow citizens to save! Savings are the ones that convert into investments!

Do you think it’s normal that we still have grass thatched houses? Do you think it’s normal that everyday we are making funeral contributions because people can’t save money during their lifetime? Do you think it’s normal to say don’t entertain that one because they are Upnd, PF, Socialist or the other? Is that a normal society? In fact are we even okay ourselves?

Let’s also remove the begging syndrome! I can’t even park my car in peace without people asking for money? By the time the day ends all the cash I had is gone! But to remove begging we need to empower the needy! Inculcate in them a spirit of entrepreneurship! Help them become independent!

There would be a vacuum in PF without me- Sata

0

Former first lady Dr Christine Kaseba says she appreciates that people turned up for the memorial service of her late husband president Michael Sata, but wondered what use it was to remember somebody when “you don’t honour his legacy.”

Speaking with Daily Revelation, Dr Kaseba was at pains to explain the

chaos and factionalism in the former ruling party, saying her late husband warned leaders in the party before he died that they were going to kill PF if they did not handle it properly.

“I am glad that people turned up for the memorial. But of what use is remembering somebody when you don’t honour his legacy? What use is remembering somebody when you want to destroy what he selflessly set out to build?” Dr Kaseba asked. “So they have got to love and they need to put aside their differences. And it’s possible these differences can be set apart.”

Dr Kaseba said her late husband did not toil in vain for things to happen in the manner they were.

“Even yourself, what are your thoughts from whatever you did (covering late president Michael Sata)? Do you think he did all that in vain?” Dr Kaseba asked. “You know Patson, before he died I remember him talking to some members of central committee and he told them I have worked, I have toiled. It wasn’t for you that I was toiling, it was for the common person. I have made life comfortable for you but if you are not careful after I have gone, if you don’t handle this party carefully after I have gone, it will be broken.”

She urged the factions to prioritise Sata’s sacrifice.

“So my appeal, for the sake of Michael Sata, is to sort of urge everyone to remember what Michael Sata stood for, service to the people. He was a servant of the people so it wasn’t about what he would get as a president. It wasn’t about the trappings of that office. It was all about having authority to make a difference in the lives of the poor,” Dr Kaseba said. “So this can only happen if there is love. Love for everyone, not love of … that selfish love. And I think if we can be open enough and show love to our neighbor, show love to each other I think it will become very, very clear.”

Asked what role she felt her husband’s successor could play, the interview was conducted an hour before Lungu declared he was coming back to active politics, Dr Kaseba said it would be tricky as it was known to all that president Lungu renounced his party presidency.

“But being a father figure it wouldn’t be a bad thing to call almost everyone, including Miles, even beforehand. But I think maybe he is also holding back because of the permutations that come with holding a meeting. People might misinterpret what he is trying to do,” Dr Kaseba said. “But I think it’s something that can be done, if not by the former president Edgar Lungu it could be done by other states people.”

Asked if she was ready to do the mediation herself, Dr Kaseba said: “Well, I can talk to them but you know I think we need to start separating the family from the political party. When they want advice I think we are open, they can come because in as much as I am family, I am a wife, there is a lot more that I participated in the formation and the development of the party to where it was. So if they need advice I am quite willing, they can come and talk to me. But I think it’s extremely important that we put our differences aside and forge on what Michael Sata sought out to do.”

She said there is a lot that could be done if all the different factions came together, saying they do not even have to be in government again to be able to achieve what Sata wanted to do.

“We can start going round and start sowing seeds of love. You know we need to be united. There is so much acrimony in the country. And God has blessed us as a peaceful nation, but I think there is quite a lot that we can do to cement that peace and unity in the country,” said Dr Kaseba. https://dailyrevelationzambia.com/sata-warned-pf-will-be-broken-kaseba-if-leaders-did-not-handle-party-carefully/

Wiseman Daniel Stands Strong: Defending Prophet TB Joshua Against BBC Allegations

0

In the wake of the controversial fabricated and stage-managed BBC documentary on Prophet TB Joshua and the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Wiseman Daniel, a devoted disciple and minister of the Everlasting Light of Hope Ministry (ELOHIM), breaks his silence.

Wiseman Daniel, a seasoned Prophet of God and a loyal disciple of Prophet TB Joshua, addresses the recent storm surrounding his mentor. His powerful speech not only defends Prophet TB Joshua against the allegations but also sheds light on the challenges faced by true ministers of God.

Daniel emphasizes that a genuine calling by God often involves betrayals, hatred, envy, and jealousy. True ministers of God, following the path of Jesus Christ, can expect such challenges.

He asserts that answering the divine call means drawing a battle line with Satan and his agents. A calling from God places one in covenant with Him, and any allegiance to the world keeps one tied to Satan.

Having lived with Prophet TB Joshua, Wiseman Daniel shares his purpose – to stand for the truth, serve, and gain invaluable experience for his own journey.

Daniel paints a vivid picture of Prophet TB Joshua as a man born with genuine love, demonstrated through compassion, generosity, and forgiveness. Despite financial constraints in his early life, Prophet TB Joshua prioritized others’ well-being.

Describing his mentor as a patient and humble man, Daniel highlights Prophet TB Joshua’s unwavering dedication to the word of God. Despite numerous titles and awards, humility defined his character.

Wiseman Daniel expresses dismay at those who, once beneficiaries of Prophet TB Joshua’s labor, now speak against him. He urges gratitude for the Synagogue Church of All Nations, emphasizing that none came into SCOAN complete, all arriving with their unique challenges.

Daniel cautions that deliverance is only possible for those with a sincere motive. Those with demonic intentions may not find relief in the presence of a true man of God.

Using a powerful analogy, Wiseman Daniel notes that the current controversies are like fighting the smoke while the firewood continues to burn. He urges understanding and spiritual discernment in comprehending the unfolding events.

As the controversy surrounding the BBC fabricated falsehood against Prophet TB Joshua and the SCOAN persists, Wiseman Daniel’s speech adds a personal and insightful perspective. His words echo the sentiments of many loyal followers, defending the legacy and integrity of a man they consider a true prophet of God. May God bless his words and guide those seeking the truth.

UN sets December deadline for peacekeepers to complete DR Congo pullout

The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo, which helped in the fight against rebels for more than two decades before being asked by the Congolese government to leave, will complete its withdrawal from the Central African nation by the end of 2024, the mission said Saturday.

A three-phased withdrawal of the 15,000-force will begin in the South Kivu province where at least 2,000 security personnel will leave by the end of April in the first phase, according to Bintou Keita, head of the mission known as MONUSCO, after which forces in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces will also leave.

“After 25 years of presence, MONUSCO will definitively leave the DRC no later than the end of 2024,” Keita said at a media briefing in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa. The end of the mission will not be “the end of the United Nations” in the country, she added.

The U.N. and Congolese officials worked together to produce a disengagement plan for “a progressive, responsible, honorable and exemplary withdrawal of MONUSCO,” Congolese Foreign Minister Christophe Lutundula said. Modalities have also been set for “the gradual transfer of tasks from MONUSCO to Congolese government,” Lutundula added.

The MONUSCO force arrived in Congo in 2010 after taking over from an earlier U.N. peacekeeping mission to protect civilians and humanitarian personnel and to support the Congolese government in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.

However, frustrated Congolese say that no one is protecting them from rebel attacks, leading to protests against the U.N. mission and others that have at times turned deadly.

Over the years of its existence, eastern Congo continues to be ravaged by more than 120 armed groups seeking a share of the region’s resources such as gold and trying to protect their communities, some of them quietly backed by Congo’s neighbors. The violence is occasioned by rampant mass killings and has displaced nearly 7 million people.

The Congolese government — which has just been reelected in a disputed vote — requested the U.N. mission to leave the country after claiming the security collaboration “has proved its limits in a context of permanent war, without the longed-for peace being restored to eastern Congo.” The government has also directed an East African regional force, deployed last year to help end the fighting, to leave the country for similar reasons.

MILES SAMPA’S PARTY IS UPND ‘SPECIAL’ PROJECT- MUNDUBILE

0

SAMPA’S PARTY IS UPND ‘SPECIAL’ PROJECT MUNDUBILE

………..as the PF MCC says, ” the UPND project” can’t worry anyone in the true and original PF*

Kelvin Sichizya in Kasama.

January 13, 2024 – A Member of the Central Committee in the former ruling Party, the PF has urged Zambians not to be bothered by Miles Sampa and his so called PF party, saying “even little children know that Sampa and his activities are just a UPND Special project which was not in any way linked to the former ruling party

Mr. Brian Mundubile who is Mporokoso Central Member of Parliament says Mr. Sampa and group ” is just a group of people who have chosen to go the wrong way” and said the original PF is still intact and was growing stronger with a full Central Committee and Provincial and all structures.

Speaking on a live Kasama Radio programme this evening, Mr. Mundubile said after winning the 2021 elections, President Haakainde Hichilema was very sure that within 90 days, the PF was going to disinteregrate completely but said after realizing that the former ruling party was not “falling apart” the UPND decided to sponsor such small illegal splinters to try and “kill” the PF party

The PF MCC who was accompanied by Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya said the campaigns conducted by HH in 2021 were based on promises but now we are comparing between oranges looking at the first two years of PF in power and the two years UPND has stayed since its elect adding “when PF took over the COUNTRY every region country-wide was turned into a construction site

“Mind you, it was not a construction site of bole holes and Classrooms, IT WAS REAL CONSTRUCTION” Mr. Mundubile said.

He said as for Civil Servants, within a short period of PF reign, they received a payrise of between 150 and 300 percent, an increased tax threshold with very encouraging pronouncements made by President Michael Sata

The Mporokoso Law maker said people have been comparing “and now UPND knows that they stand no chance in 2026 and so they realized that the only solution was to ” damage the competitor”, the largest opposition part which is the PF. “That’s how come they sponsored a split in the PF to cause confusion” Mr. Mundubile said.

“For a very small meeting, a retreat, they gave Sampa a government facility, Mulungushi, and over 200 police officers, and it changed into a conference followed by assigning 10 police officers to escort and guard him at Parliament” He later went to PF Secretariat and despite reporting to police, nothing was done”

And Mr. Mundubile has called on the PF party membership country-wide to remain firm to see their Party move forward.

He wondered what message President Hichilema will have for the people of Zambia after destroying the economy, with increased prices of mealie meal, fuel and destroying their fortunes as they have done

“Potential Civil Servants with long service have been removed from their positions and replaced by UPND cadres with no knowledge thereby frustrating the 400 experienced government workers while at Ministry of Justice, Attorney General, the cadres are only promoting illegalities”, he said.

KAMBWILI: THE CASE OF FAKE LOVE AND HOW PEOPLE CAN USE YOU TO HATE OTHERS WHILE YOUR HEALTH DETERIORATES

0

KAMBWILI: THE CASE OF FAKE LOVE AND HOW PEOPLE CAN USE YOU TO HATE OTHERS WHILE YOUR HEALTH DETERIORATES

If there is a lesson to be drawn from Chishimba Kambwili by all Zambians is that of the fact that people will use their hatred to make you hate those they hate.

Today, Kambwili is really suffering alone as all those that praised him when he was committing crimes are in their comfort zones. Perhaps only his wife, children and some true distance family members are by his bed side. Forget the side chicks. Those were after him when it was beneficial for them and this adds to Kambwili’s big PF family. They have all gone.

In fact, for the PF big Family, they feel Kambwili is to blame that Edgar Lungu lost elections.

While Kambwili is battling for his life, there is that another politically impotent cadre or thug who is about to lose his senses and be used by th3 same clique to break laws.

By the way. In mobilisation, you will rarely see Sean Tembo’s children picking stones or being told to rise up. Edgar Lungu’s Tasila had even gone to the USA and only came back to Zambia when the father was President and the people of Chawama ended up voting for an American raised and accent orator who doesn’t even know which area gets flooded badly and source of cholera as she doesn’t even stay in the same Constituency.

While Kambwili did a lot of bad things including calling for other people to be killed or Zambia to be divided, he remains human and only his mouth betrayed him as Edgar Lungu saw the opening quickly.

Today, Kambwili, Hakainde Hichilema President of Zambia has allowed that Kambwili be given special medical treatment. This is as it should be but what remains to be seen is if Kambwili will surely reciprocate one day by calling for unity and avoid name calling. He is a convict and he has appealed his jailing and State argues that actually his six months jail is too little for the divisive language he used.

Today it is Kambwili in jail, in a hospital bed with handcuffs and next it will be you if you keep opening your mouth like a hungry hyena or abusing your fingers through writings and when you spew tribal hatred and lies, obviously by then you may do so on people that have really felt so much pain and can’t forgive you as HH does. So, live in harmony with everyone.

AMB. EMMANUEL MWAMBA MUST BE CALLED TO ORDER AND SHOW LEADERSHIP

By Daimone Siulapwa

In the midst of the cholera outbreak gripping our nation, the actions and statements of Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba have raised concerns and sparked debates about the role of leaders during times of crisis.

Mwamba, a figure respected in both media and politics, finds himself under scrutiny for what some perceive as playing politics rather than providing genuine solutions to the unfolding health crisis.

It is undeniably true that the cholera outbreak demands a united front from all leaders, regardless of their political affiliations.

Mwamba, as a presidential aspirant, bears a responsibility to demonstrate leadership and contribute constructively to the efforts to contain the outbreak.

However, recent actions suggest a focus on political point-scoring rather than addressing the urgent needs of the people.

Over the past two weeks, Mwamba has been ubiquitous in the media , utilizing radio, social media, and TV platforms to criticize the government’s handling of the cholera crisis.

While criticism is a vital aspect of a functioning democracy, the absence of tangible and practical solutions in Mwamba’s rhetoric is glaring.

Furthermore, his reluctance to volunteer for frontline involvement raises questions about the sincerity of his concern for the well-being of the citizens.

Presidential aspirants, by the nature of their ambitions, should be held to a higher standard.

The public expects more than mere condemnations; they expect concrete proposals and a willingness to actively contribute to resolving the crisis.

Mwamba’s current approach risks tarnishing his profile as a respected media guru and politician, as it appears to prioritize political gains over the welfare of the people.

The call for a cease-fire in political commentary on the cholera outbreak is not an attempt to stifle necessary critique.

Instead, it is a plea for a more constructive and solution-oriented engagement from our political leaders.

During a public health crisis, it is highly irresponsible for anyone, especially politicians, to derive joy from the failures of others in managing any outbreak.

Such behavior only exposes the selfish and narrow-minded aspects of leadership.

In times of crisis, the public needs leaders who can rise above political differences and work collaboratively for the greater good.

While healthy competition between political parties is crucial for democracy, the cholera outbreak is a stark reminder that certain issues demand bipartisan efforts.

The suffering of the people should never be exploited for political gains.

It is important for politicians, including Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba, to recognize that there comes a time when enough is enough.

The urgency of the cholera outbreak demands a united front, and the citizens are looking to their leaders for reassurance, guidance, and, most importantly, action.

Political posturing and point-scoring only serve to distract from the real issues at hand and exacerbate the challenges faced by those affected by the outbreak.

As a political analyst and good governance activist, it is my firm belief that leaders should be held accountable not just for their words but, more importantly, for their actions.

The cholera outbreak requires a swift, collective response, and all leaders must set aside their political differences to prioritize the well-being of the nation.

My personal call to Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba and other political leaders is that they must reassess their approach to the cholera outbreak.

The time for political grandstanding has passed; now is the time for genuine leadership, empathy, and collaboration.

Only through a united effort can we hope to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of lives.

REALITY DAWNS ON MILES SAMPA

…only 11 people comprised the so-called Central Commitee Meeting with heavy police presence at great cost…

Zambia Whistleblower wrote:

The Patriotic Front Miles Sampa’s faction had its so-called Central Committee Meeting yesterday at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka with heavy State Police on standby.

One major positive outcome of the Miles Sampa faction Central Committee Meeting is that finally reality has dawned on Miles Sampa and his financiers. Sampa has no following at all.

He has no notable person among the members of the Central Committee that can help him drive his agenda and that of his sponsors.

The 11 people that he mobilised yet at great cost to converge at the Radisson Blu are all nonentities.

We doubt if a quorum was even achieved according to the Patriotic Front Constitution. We are told the PF has 80 members of the Central Committee.

Even Sampa’s own Social media postings show several empty spaces in the room. For the doubting Thomases, it is now extremely clear that Mr. Sampa’s project is a failed project.

Those sponsoring him should instead donate all the financial resources towards the fight against Cholera. Miles Sampa is going nowhere with his project. That Central Committee was Madimbi.

Anyway we can not blame the participants. With this biting economy, we are sure the few who attended wanted some allowances to help make ends meet.

Simply put, Miles Sampa’s Central Committee Meeting was a flop and his sponsors must be very annoyed with him. Money down the drain.

Meanwhile, Police in Eastern Province have arrested the suspects in the matter in which two of Mr. Sampa’s henchmen are alleged to have been victimised and assaulted. The Zambian Whistleblower would like to ask the Zambia Police Service some few questions.

Why is it so difficult for Police in Zambia to charge people with the correct charge that can stand in court?

We have observed that it is very common for the Zambia Police to charge suspects with charges that are exaggerated and later fail to stand in court.

This is a clear example that the Police at times are used to fix political opponents. For example the case of Obvious Mwaliteta and others who had gone to protect their party votes. Though they may have taken the law in their hands, we do not think they should have been charged with aggravated robbery.

That is what we are sensing in the Petauke case. The Police should learn to charge suspects appropriately and not use their powers to fix people on behalf of politicians.

What is the purpose of charging people with charges that are non bailable, keep them in Remand prison for a long time before trial and later they are acquitted?

That is not justice. It is abuse of the Police powers. We urge the Police to always strive to charge people appropriately. The Police themselves are also potential law breakers. Do unto others as you would have them do unto You.

In 2024, President HH should seek to be forthright and stop bluffing

By Aaron Ng’ambi

The President has been quoted in the tabloids as having said that his trips abroad have now started paying off for everyone to see.

As much as we respect the opinions of the Head of State, it is also clear that potentially the man may be living in denial concerning the harsh economic realities of our time. What is the President talking about, which have come out of his so many trips abroad? Because all the economic indicators show us that we are worse off now than we were a year or two years ago. The cost of living is skyrocketing, the Kwacha is performing terribly, and fuel prices including basic commodities keep rising. Hence, we encourage this President to get real with our people and stop bluffing.

The weakness of this President is that the man cannot live up to his word. He sees everything in terms of politics, even at the expense of national development. Surely, no serious independent minded person can trust a man who cannot honour his promises. After winning the August 12, 2021, elections, this President came in power and told us that everything he said he will do were not promises but assurances. Unfortunately, the assurances of fuel prices coming down to K12 per litre, or mealie-meal prices coming down to K50 for a 25kg bag fails short of what an assurance looks like. If anything, such promises, and many others which the President willingly made to the Zambian people can only be classified as fake promises. Otherwise, we are left with no option but to ask this fundamental question, has President Hakainde Hichilema been bluffing or to use the words of Barrack Obama, is Mr Hichilema just popping off?

Evidently, the President forgets easily what he says. Those around him should help the man remember his words, before he begins to look like a flip flopper. At the beginning of last year, the President and his commerce minister were on record of having said that the government will solve the issues of Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) by end of first quarter in 2023. This was to no avail. In fact, the country waited and waited, until almost the fourth quarter; that’s when we were told that Vedanta was officially back at KCM and with that comeback many flowery things were promised to the employees of KCM, including but not limited to 20 per cent salary increments. Sadly, the last few weeks we have seen KCM employees and even the Mine Workers Union protesting about the yet to be fulfilled pledges at KCM.

For all the good and the bad, President HH will be remembered by many writers of history as a man who takes pride in self-praise at any given opportunity. The phrase “we are doing this, or we have done this for the first” is part of his daily vocabulary, regardless of whether such a statement is factual, exaggerated or even a misrepresentation of facts. Accordingly, to the persona the President portrays to the general public, he is the best man to have walked the face of Mother Zambia. He sometimes, says something knowing full well that it’s not true but absolutely believes it himself and wants others to do likewise. For example, we all remember vividly the incident when the Head of State lied to the people with a straight face. He publicly said he had never met the KCM liquidator Mr Milingo Lungu. When asked about meeting the latter he answered in the negative while looking into the eyes of the citizens. But later on, the court affidavit proved otherwise, and caused great embarrassment on the part of the President. This was a clear case of President HH caught bluffing.

The Cyber Security Act, which was enacted under the previous administration used to be on the lips of Hakainde Hichilema (then opposition leader) with a promise that he would repeal this law once elected President. Nonetheless, we have to be fair and mention that President HH has failed to repeal this particular law for whatever reasons. But he has gone further to use the same law to jail opposition leaders such as Sean Tembo. The same can be said about the Public Order Act. As an opposition leader, Mr Hichilema said many things about how he would not make it any better but completely get rid of it from our law books. Now that, the Public Order Act favours him and his administration by virtual of him being in power, the President wants to sweet talk his way out of the promise he made but talking of making amendments to the Public Order Act and not getting rid of it. This is another bluff by the current Head of State.

Lastly, the fight against corruption has been a dismal failure. There are many rumours of corruption under this administration, especially with single sourcing in procurement processes. The President has been doing nothing but continues to give empty speeches on this matter; to the point that when a certain minister then was caught with a briefcase at a Chinese business premise, the President defended his minister that ‘I called him and spoke to him’. As fate would have it, the same minister brought another scandal at the doorstep of his boss with so much overwhelming evidence on social media that the President was left with no option but to ask this minister to step aside. Therefore, we ask; is this a serious regime that is committed to fighting corruption? Is it only corruption if or when it involves the opposition political players? Where is the good will to genuinely fight corruption in all of its ugly forms? We hope that President HH will stop bluffing in 2024 and provide serious leadership. It is in the interest of our country, that we have a President who will meaningfully eradicate corruption, be humble, be truthful, be forthright, be teachable, and above all be consistent.

Judicial tenure: navigating the waters of politics and upholding justice

Judicial tenure: navigating the waters of politics and upholding justice

By Dr Lawrence Mwelwa

Throughout history, there have been courageous and principled judges who have stood up against dictatorial leaders, upholding justice and the rule of law. Their actions serve as a reminder of the importance of judicial independence and the need for judges to remain committed to their ethical obligations.

In the face of adversity, these judges demonstrated unwavering integrity and an unwavering commitment to delivering justice. Their landmark decisions have left an indelible mark on the legal landscape, serving as a testament to the power of the judiciary to protect individual rights and defend against government interference.

Lord Denning, a British judge known for his landmark decisions, played a crucial role in defending judicial independence during the era of dictators. His judgments strongly advocated for individual rights and against government interference. Similarly, justice Miles Lord, a prominent American federal judge, made several landmark decisions challenging dictatorial powers, even in the face of political pressure. Justice Hans-Joachim Konzack, a German judge, also defied dictatorial leaders, making significant contributions to upholding the rule of law during the Cold War era in East Germany. Despite intense pressure from the communist regime, he made several landmark decisions safeguarding human rights and defending individuals persecuted by the state.

In South Africa, justice Arthur Chaskalson, as the first Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court after apartheid, made numerous landmark decisions safeguarding constitutional rights. His judgments helped solidify the notion of an independent judiciary and constitutional democracy in the country. Arthur T. Vanderbilt, a renowned American judge, made groundbreaking decisions during the era of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, challenging dictatorial tendencies and upholding the constitutionality of government programmes.

One cannot forget the brave Malawian judge, justice Healey Potani, who nullified election results in 2020 due to widespread irregularities, ensuring a fair election process. His decision, despite strong opposition, demonstrated his commitment to upholding democracy and the rule of law, setting a precedent for the judiciary in Malawi.

These judges serve as inspiring examples of judicial integrity and courage. Their decisions were not influenced by personal gain or external pressures, but rather guided by a sense of duty and ethical responsibility. They acted as guardians of justice, defending the rights of individuals and protecting the principles of democracy. Their stories should serve as a reminder to Zambian court officers to learn from history. In the face of political pressure or attempts to use the judiciary as a tool for persecution, judges must remain steadfast in their commitment to justice. They should never allow themselves to be influenced by financial considerations or personal gain.

Upholding justice and the rule of law is a noble and essential duty for judges. They must prioritise their ethical obligations and remain independent and impartial, making decisions solely based on the law and the evidence presented before them. By emulating the courage and integrity of these historic judges, Zambian court officers can help ensure that justice prevails in the face of any challenges. They can create a legacy of fairness, honesty, and objectivity – a legacy that will foster public trust and confidence in the judiciary and reinforce the credibility of the judicial system. As officers of the court, the responsibility lies in their hands to make decisions that will stand the test of time – decisions that will uphold justice and protect the fundamental principles of democracy. Let us learn from history and be judges who remain true to the principles of justice, irrespective of the circumstances we may face.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD PRIORITIZE ZAMBIA – CHINA RELATIONS- Socialist Party

GOVERNMENT SHOULD PRIORITIZE ZAMBIA – CHINA RELATIONS.

13/01/2024// LUSAKA.

Socialist Party National Youth League wishes to commend the Chinese Government for donating 20 million Kwacha as well as human resource towards the fight against cholera.

Zambia-China relations is the country’s oldest marriage. In 1974, during his meeting with our founding father and First Republican President Dr Kaunda, Chairman Mao Zedong, the leader of the People’s Republic of China (as he then was) for the first time openly elaborated the well-known Three Worlds theory, and declared that China would stand firmly with all other Third-World countries including Zambia.

Two days ago, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia DU XIAOHUI explained that the official assistance in cash will be delivered as soon as necessary procedures are completed. The Association of Chinese Corporations in Zambia will also donate water tanks with a capacity of up to One Hundred tonnes per day and a transportation truck to supply clean drinking water to 20 thousand people every day.

We recognize that Zambia-China relationship has been called an all-weather friendship. The two countries have a long history of cordial bilateral ties which produced tangible and visible win-win outcomes. The evidence of the China-Zambia cooperation is visible all-over Zambia; the TAZARA, the Tuta Road, the Kaoma-Mongu Road, the Kafue lower hydro electricity project, the KK international airport, the Lusaka Bulk Water project, the Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, the Kenneth Kaunda wing of the Mulungushi International Conference Centre , the ultra modern National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka and the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, and the modern housing for our security and defense personnel dotted around the country, to mention only a few.

Additionally, China had been instrumental when our founding father Dr Kenneth Kaunda and others led Zambia in overthrowing British colonial rule in southern Africa, and supported freedom fighters in South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia in pursuit of national liberation through armed struggles.

In those glorious days, China and African countries stood together in the strong belief that the majority of the oppressed will secure the victory. China provided firm and concrete assistance to the liberation movements in southern Africa, ranging from media support and military strategies, to funds, weapons, supplies and personnel training. By so doing, China joined hands with Zambia to take tangible actions to ensure the success of the struggle for justice, equity and peace.

Consequently, in October 1964, Zambia declared the establishment of diplomatic relations with China right after its independence.
It was the first southern African country to establish diplomatic ties with China. To cement this bilateral relationship, in 1971, as one of the 23 sponsor countries of Resolution 2758, Zambia, together with other Asian, African and Latin American countries, carried China into the United Nations.

The darlings of those in government today, the West and their Allies opposed China’s help to many countries in Africa. With China as one of the largest economy in the world, a Super Power with a permanent seat on the UN Security Council is willing to treat third world countries as equals and engage in sincere, practical and win-win cooperation. In the words of our Founding Father and First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda a firm proponent of the Zambia-China relationship, “When the Western countries refused to help us, our Chinese brothers and sisters came and fought together with us. Is there anything that could surpass this friendship?”

SP National Youth Secretary.

One Night in a Lusaka Supermarket…face to face with cash register girl- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

SUNDAY: One Night in a Lusaka Supermarket
…face to face with cash register girl

Amb. Anthony Mukwita wrote:

I walked into a shop late last night because we had run out of bread, picked up a few fruits along the way.

Somehow, I couldn’t help but notice the long face a nice young lady behind the cash register, perhaps 25 years was wearing.

She looked distressed, tired, and sad.

I am sensitive myself that’s why I know names of waiters and waitresses that serve me every time I dine out with family and pals, so I ask albeit its none of my business.

“Why the sadness young Lady you should be happy you are working night so your pay must be double with night shift plus you have a job when many don’t?”

With clear sadness and grim resignation, she responds to me, “sir there´s no night allowance for working night and day here…we all get K45 per day as pay, I am sorry if I am not nice to you, but I am just trying to finish a shift from 18hrs to 8am at K45 per day and see my child.”

Her revelation just knocked the wind off my wings because I saw a young girl just a few years older than my own son slaving in a ´free ‘country´ on a wage that does not meet the stipulated almost K10,000 on basics alone the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflections and other NGOs including the UN talks about for a family of six per month.

A quick reflection shows me that in Zambia, a shop worker like her and dozen others according to the law must earn by law, at least K2,300 per month, at K45 per day she´s starving. Are her bosses breaking the law?

But I take comfort in the fact that instead of stealing or engaging in ´social work´ she´s doing a decent hustle albeit on a slave wage. A bird in hand is better than two in the bush, right?

Even in Africa’s second largest copper producer ironically where Sugilite and emeralds abound.

I walk out of the shop disillusioned and think, “Why are foreign companies paying less taxes and less energy fees compared to Zambians, why are ordinary Zambians that can’t open a bank account be taxed heavily for their mobile money transactions? Why why why?”

I come out with no answer but then the few Zambians in formal employment that pay 37 pc taxes monthly to Ceaser to oil the Zambian economic wheels per month know better maybe. You have got to feed the dragon.

Foreign mining companies and lobby groups that are cashing in billions of kwachas for services (tax breaks) I don’t know in dollars, will look at my view as wapt and bitter. He worked in the previous administration.

Somebody must fix this.

So next time think twice before you cream at the girls at the counter in a restaurant or shop, think again.

Happy new year folks. Cholera is real!

Breach in cockpit window forces ANA Boeing to retreat

0

A plane from All Nippon Airways (ANA) in Japan had to go back to the airport it took off from because there was a crack on the window in the front of the plane.

A crack appeared in the outer layer of the cockpit window.

The situation wasn’t too bad, but if it wasn’t fixed it could have been very dangerous, according to an expert in planes.

No one on got hurt.

ANA flight NH1182 was flying from Sapporo to Toyama, both cities in Japan.

The Boeing 737 plane landed at Sapporo’s New Chitose airport at about 12:10 local time (3:10 GMT).

A spokesperson from ANA, Japan’s biggest airline, said they found a crack in the plane as it flew over Hakodate.

“The crack did not affect the plane’s steering or air pressure,” the spokesperson said.

The plane went back to the airport and landed safely.

Airplane specialist John Strickland said we still don’t know why the crack happened.

“Sometimes things like this happen. Maybe something hit the window, like a bird or a big piece of hail. It’s not uncommon. ”

“He said sometimes you can get a stress fracture from overuse, but it doesn’t happen very often. ”

He said the airline needs to put in a new window, not just fix the broken part, to make sure the plane is very safe.

“He said it’s pretty much the same as triple glazing, and everything needs to be in good condition. ”

“These things happen sometimes, we can’t say exactly how often, but they can be really dangerous if they’re not fixed. ”

There were 59 people traveling and six staff members on the plane. Different flights were set up for the passengers as an option.

This is the second time a Boeing 737 airplane has had a problem in the last two weeks. But the ANA flight was not one of Boeing’s newest 737 MAX 9 planes. It was an older version that was still in good condition.

The US aviation regulator, the FAA, has stopped all Boeing 737-9 planes from flying after an Alaska Airlines plane had a big hole in its side when a panel fell off while in the air.

The airplane had to land quickly in Oregon with 177 people on board.

On Friday, the FAA decided to keep the Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes on the ground for longer to make sure they are safe. They also said they will be keeping a closer eye on Boeing to make sure they are doing things right.

The FAA said that 171 planes similar to the one in the incident must stay on the ground for the safety of American travelers.

William Lai elected president of Taiwan in historic poll

0

Taiwanese people voted for William Lai to be their president in a very important election. This shows that Taiwan is going in a different direction from China.

Beijing is probably going to be upset because they think Mr Lai causes problems with his beliefs about independence.

China says that it controls Taiwan, even though Taiwan governs itself. While it wants the two sides to come together peacefully, it’s also willing to use force if necessary.

It said the Taiwan election was about choosing between “war and peace”.

Beijing’s government doesn’t like Mr Lai’s DPP party, which has been in charge of Taiwan for eight years. China has increased its military around the island, making people more worried about a possible fight.

Mr Lai won his party a third term in the presidency, which has never happened before. In his first comments after his opponents admitted defeat, he indicated that this was a path that could not be changed.

The country will keep moving in the right direction. “We won’t focus on the past,” he told the journalists in a press conference.

Later, Lai spoke to a large crowd in Taipei and said that his win was a victory for democracy.

“We did it. ” We didn’t allow outside forces to impact our election. “Because we decided that only we can pick our president,” he said. Before the election, Taiwan said that China tried to meddle in the voting.

But Mr Lai also had something to say to China.

He told reporters that he prefers talking and exchanging ideas instead of causing problems and fighting, and he wants peace and stability with Beijing.

He said he will keep things the way they are between Taiwan and China and protect Taiwan from any danger from China.

In the past, Mr Lai said he wanted Taiwan to be separate from China, which made China very upset. But now he says if he becomes president, he won’t try to make it happen.

Mr Lai got 40% of the vote, which is more than Hou Yu-ih from the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. Since 2000, Taiwan has switched back and forth between the DPP and the KMT, which is more friendly towards Beijing.

Newcomer politician Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People’s Party, who is liked by young voters, got 25% of the vote.

On Saturday, people picked their lawmakers. According to Taiwanese media, the DPP no longer has the most seats in parliament. The opposition is growing stronger, but no single party has enough seats to control the parliament.

Some people think that if the opposition party controls the legislature and the DPP president is in charge, it could make governing Taiwan more difficult.

US launches second attack against Yemeni Houthis

0

The US says it launched another attack on a Houthi target in Yemen on Saturday, which is the second attack on the group in two days.

The US said they did another action to target a Houthi radar site.

The Houthis promised to retaliate strongly to the attacks, and said no one was hurt.

The strikes happened because the Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea for weeks.

The UK and US worked together to bomb almost 30 Houthi locations with help from countries like Australia and Canada.

The US Central Command used missiles to attack a Houthi radar site in Yemen. The attack happened one day ago.

It was a military strike that happened in Yemen at 03:45 local time.

The strikes were meant to weaken the Houthi’s ability to attack ships at sea.

The Houthi spokesman told Al Jazeera that they will respond strongly to the new attack, and it didn’t cause any injuries or damage.

Another Houthi representative, Mohammed Abdulsalam, told Reuters that the attacks didn’t really affect their ability to stop ships from Israel in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Since November 19th, the US Central Command said the group tried to attack and bother boats in the Red Sea and the gulf of Aden 28 times.

Many people came together in Saana on Friday to protest against the US-UK strikes and show support for Palestine. They chanted slogans against the US and in favor of Palestine.

Tensions have increased because people are worried that attacks in Yemen could make the Middle East more unstable.

Both the UK and US say they are protecting shipping routes and not involved in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The White House says that 15% of the world’s trade that goes by sea goes through the Red Sea. This means China has 8% of the world’s grain, 12% of the oil that is transported by sea, and 8% of the world’s liquified natural gas.

The Houthis are causing a big problem for shipping companies, so some of them have stopped working in that area. The cost of insurance has also gone up a lot since December.

London and Washington supported Israel after the 7th October attacks by Hamas. Around 1,300 people were killed and 240 were taken hostage.

Israel has been attacking Hamas in Gaza with air strikes and ground operations. According to the health ministry in Gaza, around 23,843 Palestinians have been killed, and many more are believed to be dead under the rubble.

In reaction to the war, the Houthis said they were on the side of Hamas and started attacking ships they claimed were going to Israel or had connections with Israel.

The Houthis are a group of fighters from a smaller part of the Muslim religion in Yemen called Zaidis. They are named after the person who started the movement, Hussein al-Houthi.

The main government in Yemen is led by the Presidential Leadership Council. President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi gave his powers to this council in April 2022. It is located in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Mr. Hadi fled to in 2015.

Most people in Yemen live in places ruled by the Houthi group. The Houthis also rule the Red Sea coast, in addition to Sanaa and northern Yemen.

France’s youngest PM Gabriel Attal: A look into his personal life

0

Gabriel Attal’s personal life has drawn considerable interest since his historic appointment as France’s first openly gay and youngest Prime Minister on January 9, 2024. A trusted and reliable member of President Emmanuel Macron’s team, Attal is known for his strong communication skills, particularly in handling contentious issues such as the immigration law debate and the fast-approaching European elections.

While Attal’s professional accomplishments are well chronicled, his private life offers a fascinating insight into the person behind the political persona. Questions about his life partner and the balance he maintains between his thriving career and personal obligations have ignited interest in his life beyond politics.

Is Gabriel Attal, France’s Prime Minister, in a marital relationship?
The straightforward response is, no. Gabriel Attal, the noteworthy French politician, is not bound by the restraints of marriage. However, he shares a close relationship with fellow politician Stéphane Séjourné. Séjourné, who is 36 years old, is a member of Macron’s Renaissance (RE) party and has been serving his constituents in the European Parliament since 2019.

Their professional paths crossed in 2015 during their involvement in Macron’s En Marche! movement, setting the stage for a lasting bond. Despite not being legally married, Gabriel Attal, the trailblazing openly gay prime minister, shares a deep connection with Stéphane Séjourné. They currently live together in a Parisian apartment, their common interests in politics, cinema, and literature resonating within their shared home.

In terms of his acceptance of his sexual orientation, Attal’s journey has been marked by openness and bravery. Following his election as a representative for the 10th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine in the National Assembly in 2017, he publicly declared his sexual orientation. His announcement carried a wider message of hope and resilience, especially for young individuals on similar journeys.

How do Gabriel Attal and Stéphane Séjourné balance their careers?
In the complex world of French politics, Gabriel Attal and Stéphane Séjourné stand out not just for their professional achievements but also for the strong bond they maintain. Despite their demanding schedules and extensive travel due to professional commitments, they manage to stay connected, using technology to overcome geographical distances.

Their shared moments in Paris provide a much-needed break from their busy schedules. Whether it’s a night at the cinema, enjoyable dinners with friends, or visits to cultural landmarks, they treasure these moments of quality time in the City of Lights.

For Gabriel, his relationship with Séjourné goes beyond the traditional boundaries of companionship. It serves as a haven of comfort and unwavering support during turbulent times. While acknowledging their occasional differences, Gabriel highlights the deep respect and admiration they have for each other’s views and decisions. Describing Séjourné as his “best friend” and “soulmate,” Gabriel provides a glimpse into a relationship rooted in understanding, respect, and genuine affection.

Trump ordered to pay back New York Times $392,00 in legal fees

Starbucks is going to the highest court in America to fight a union.

The highest court will listen to the coffee company’s case about having to hire back workers they fired in 2021.

Starbucks said the US labor officials’ case wasn’t good enough to justify the order they were asking for.

The way the fight is settled will have a big impact on the type of help US workers can get in work disagreements.

In this situation, the National Labor Relations Board asked for and got a special court order that made the company hire back seven workers at a store in Memphis. The company had treated the workers unfairly for being in a union, and the court said they had to hire them back.

Starbucks said that the employees who invited a news crew into a store to talk about their cause were fired for breaking company rules, like going into the store off-duty.

It challenged the emergency order, called an injunction, and the lower court agreed with it.

Supporters of the temporary orders believe they are important to deal with the problems that happen while trying to solve labor disagreements that can take a long time.

But Starbucks has won in other cases where judges had stricter rules for regulators. This shows that some judges disagree, and Starbucks wants the Supreme Court to make a final decision.

Big business groups, like the US Chamber of Commerce, are supporting Starbucks by filing legal papers.

There are more workers organizing in the US lately, and it’s causing problems for companies like Amazon, Apple, and car-makers.

Since 2021, workers at over 370 Starbucks stores in the US have decided to form a union.

The people in charge of Starbucks Workers United have made many complaints saying that Starbucks is breaking the law in order to stop the workers from organizing. Often, labor officials have looked into those claims and found them to be true.

Starbucks Workers United said that the company is trying to get rid of an important tool the National Labor Relations Board uses to hold corporations responsible for breaking the law.

The Supreme Court will consider the Memphis case, and Starbucks is now fighting against all US workers, not just its own employees.

Starbucks, which runs over 10,000 stores in the US, says it did not break work laws.

The company said it was happy that the court would think about its request to make things fair for US employers by making sure that the same rules are used when deciding whether to stop something from happening.

Iran needs to order Houthis to stop –UK’s defense secretary Shapps

0

The UK’s defense secretary has warned Iran to tell its friends in the Middle East to stop what they’re doing because the world is getting tired of it.

Grant Shapps has pointed out that the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon are important friends of Iran and they support Hamas.

The UK and the US worked together to bomb Houthi targets in Yemen on Thursday night.

The Houthis have been attacking boats in the Red Sea since November.

The group from Iran who controls a big part of Yemen says they are attacking ships because of Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

On Friday, American and British forces launched air attacks on 16 places in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. They targeted places like supply centers, defense systems, and military storage areas. US officials said they also attacked again on Saturday.

MrShapps said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that Iran is important for calming down the tensions in the Middle East.

When asked about what he wants to say to the Iranian government, he said that they need to stop supporting groups like the Houthi rebels, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and others in Iraq and Syria. The world is getting tired of their actions and wants them to stop.

“We notice you, and we know what you’re up to. ” We are watching what you are doing, especially the Houthi rebels, and it won’t end well.

MrShapps said that the UK is defending itself because container ships are being threatened and a drone attacked a Royal Navy destroyer recently.

Hezbollah and Israel are shooting at each other across the border between Lebanon and Israel. This started when the Israeli military responded to Hamas attacks in southern Israel.

About 1,300 people died and 240 were taken by force in Israel. Israel attacked Gaza and more than 23,000 people have been killed.

Iranian groups in Syria and Iraq have often been attacking US military bases in the area since the war began.

Houthi attacks in the Red Sea went up by 500% between November and December last year. The danger is so big that big shipping companies stopped sailing in the area and now insurance costs are 10 times higher than before December.

The International Chamber of Shipping says that 20% of the world’s container ships are now going around the southern tip of Africa instead of going through the Red Sea.

US will retaliate if Houthis keep attacking – Biden

0

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, warns the Houthis that there will be more punishment if they keep acting badly.

The US and UK did a lot of airstrikes on Friday. They targeted nearly 30 Houthi positions because the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea.

Five people were killed, and the group said they will take revenge.

Mr Biden said the attacks went well and he believes the Houthis are a “terrorist” group.

The Houthis said that 73 missiles were fired at Yemen during the attack. They said that the attack meant that UK and US interests are now okay to be targeted.

“The US and UK did something very stupid by attacking us,” said Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam.

John Kirby, a person who works in the White House, said that we don’t want to have a war with Yemen.

However, he said that Mr. Biden will not hesitate to take more action to protect our soldiers, buildings, and trade with other countries.

The attacks on Friday were supported by the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

The Pentagon says the group might not be able to fight back with a big army right now.

“The Director of Operations, Lt Gen Douglas A Sims ll, said today that we saw a missile being fired, but it didn’t hit any ships. ”

Before, a UK maritime security group said that someone shot a missile at a boat near the south coast of Yemen, but no one got hurt and nothing was damaged.

The company Ambrey, which protects ships at sea, said that the Houthis made a mistake by attacking a tanker that was carrying Russian oil. They thought the ship was connected to the UK, but it wasn’t.

However, the US is saying they think Iran is helping the Houthi group with the resources to carry out the Red Sea attacks.

Tehran criticized the attacks on Yemen and said they broke international laws.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the strikes on Friday were not too much, but Turkey said Britain and the US are trying to make the Red Sea very dangerous.

BothSunak and Mr. Biden were criticized because they did not consult fully with their legislatures before launching the attacks.

The UK and US want to make it clear that the strikes were meant to protect shipping routes and were not related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, which they worry could cause more problems in the Middle East.

Many countries supported Israel after the Hamas attacks on 7 October. Around 1,300 people died and about 240 were taken hostage.

The Houthis are helping Hamas, a group in Gaza that Israel is attacking. So far, 23,350 people have died in the attacks, according to the health ministry in Gaza run by Hamas.

When the war started, the Houthis began attacking ships that they believed were going to Israel or had connections to Israel. They said these ships were fair game to attack.

So far, the Pentagon says that 27 ships have been attacked in the Red Sea. But it seems that many of the ships that were attacked are not military ships.

The Houthis are a big danger and now big ships are not going there and it costs 10 times more to insure them since December.

In the city of Sanaa in Yemen, which is controlled by the Houthi group, many people protested against the airstrikes by the US and UK.

“This rally is the first to speak out against the attack on Yemen last night,” one man told the Reuters news agency.

“This is also a message to Britain and the United States of America that they will suffer consequences for this attack. ”

Since October, there have been big rallies in Yemen to support the Palestinians and Gaza. This Friday’s rallies were even bigger than usual.

The Houthis are a group of fighters from a smaller group of Shia Muslims in Yemen called the Zaidis. They say they are part of the Iranian-led “axis of resistance” with Hamas and Hezbollah. They are against Israel, the US, and the wider West.

They have taken over a big part of north-western Yemen, including the biggest city, Sana’a, and are now the main government there since taking control in 2014.

Benin Voodoo festival rebrands to draw tourists

0

Kneeling as she gazes out to sea draped in white cloth and strings of pearls, Simenou Dangnitche has just completed the final stage of her annual ritual.

Every January for the past 15 years, the 48-year-old local has joined hundreds taking part in Benin’s famed Voodoo festival.

Participants gather at the “Door of No Return”, an arch built by the beach at Ouidah in southern Benin in memory of those crammed onto slave ships bound for the New World.

“It’s more than just a festival,” Dangnitche told AFP. “The meeting here is a pilgrimage, a rejuvenation, a reconnection with the ancestors to hear them speak to us again.”

Voodoo, known locally as Vodoun, is a religion that worships gods and natural spirits along with respect for revered ancestors.

It originated in the Dahomey kingdom — present-day Benin and Togo — and is still widely practised sometimes alongside Christianity in coastal towns like Ouidah, where memorials to the slave trade are dotted around the small beach settlement.

This year, Dangnitche said she was “stunned by the organisation and structuring of the festival”.

Benin’s government has rebranded the event and changed the format to make the festivities more appealing to tourists in a bid to boost the country’s economy.

It opted for a two-day celebration on January 9-10 with a reorganised programme in an event dubbed “Vodun Days”.

According to politician Kakpo Mahougnon, chair of the Benin Vodun Rites Committee, the government is considering further extending the length of the festival.

“It’s a new way of presenting Vodoun,” said President Patrice Talon, who took part in the celebration.

‘Nothing Satanic’

“Our intention is to fully reveal to the world what Vodoun is and how it is practised, to explain Vodoun and its spiritual and sociological concepts”, the president said.

“Vodoun is of economic interest to us, since tourism is an important sector,” he added.

Ouidah was given a makeover for the occasion, with several of the town’s attractions refurbished.

American Christopher Swain, who said he comes every year to “recharge and reconnect spiritually,” noticed “significant changes”.

Ouidah’s public squares hosted celebrations including jazz and dancing and even the president joined in.

The religion’s 73-year-old spiritual leader Daagbo Hounon told AFP: “We need to prove to the world that there is nothing Satanic or evil about vodoun.”

“Vodoun is about tolerance, sharing, love, generosity and peace,” he said.

“Vodoun is spiritual, but it is also several arts combined, as we can see from the songs and dances of the faithful.”

Alain Godonou, one of the heads of the Heritage and Tourism Agency, said the revamped celebrations “represent a major development in the promotion of Vodoun as a real catalyst for tourism.”

They were “a way of attracting more curiosity so that people come to discover the essence of Vodoun”, he said.

As well as international tourists, the government wants to focus on domestic tourism to boost the local economy and “reveal Benin to ourselves,” as Talon put it.

He declined to give details of the budget allocated to promoting and organising Vodoun Days to attract visitors.

TEN REFORMS THAT ZAMBIA SHOULD IMPLEMENT TO TURNAROUND THE ECONOMY- Sean Tembo

TEN REFORMS THAT ZAMBIA SHOULD IMPLEMENT TO TURNAROUND THE ECONOMY

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Recapitalize Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia so as to Produce Cheaper Fertilizer: The current price of fertilizer which averages $1,000 per tonne is too high for the nation to attain food security. Additionally, the issue of food security is too important to be left in the hands of private players. Therefore, there is need for Government to operate a state-owned local fertilizer production company. And since we already have Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia in Kafue, we just need to recapitalize it so that it can operate at its full capacity of approximately 3 million metric tonnes per annum. Our current national requirements are about 400,000 metric tonnes, so we can export the rest. It is worth noting here that local private fertilizer manufacturing companies such as United Capital Fertilizer, Greenbelt Fertilizer etcetera cannot be a substitute for a state-owned local fertilizer manufacturing company because their pricing is exploitative and only marginary different from imported fertilizer. Our true liberation can only come from a state-owned fertilizer company such as a fully recapitalized NCZ.

2. Reopen Indeni as an Oil Refinery and Construct a Crude Oil Pipeline to Angola: About 40 percent of the pump price of fuel is attributed to the cost of transportation. That is because we get our oil very far away in the Middle East. Therefore, in order to cut down the pump price of fuel, we need to source it from much nearer to home, and Angola is the perfect place. We need to reopen Indeni as an Oil Refinery as opposed to just using it as a storage facility for processed fuel which is imported from a Refinery in Tanzania. We also need to build a crude oil pipeline from Angola to Ndola to transport the crude oil cheaply. In future, we also need to consider building pipelines from the national Refinery in Ndola to all provincial centers such as Lusaka, Solwezi, Kasama, Mansa, Chipata, Choma, Mongu etcetera, so that we can cheaply transport processed fuel. The fuel tankers will then only need to distribute by road within the province from the depot at the provincial center. If we do that, then we can significantly cut the pump price of fuel and also insulate our economy from fluctuations in world oil prices which are often brought about by factors that we cannot control.

3. Make all Mineral Exports as VAT Standard Rated Supplies so as to Eliminate VAT Refunds to Mining Companies: The concept of zero-rating exports arises from the need to make locally produced goods attractive in foreign markets and therefore promote the local manufacturing industry. It is not intended to be applied to raw materials like minerals. For as long as mineral exports are zero-rated for Value Added Tax purposes, the mining houses will always be in a VAT receivable position. That means the Zambia Revenue Authority will continue to collect tax from struggling businesses and individuals, and then give it away to mining companies in the form of VAT refunds. It is simply immoral. And for as long as this remains the case, our economy will remain a zero-sum game. We are not going anywhere. Poverty and hardships will remain a perpetual part of the lives of our people. The solution simply lies in amending the VAT Act so as to make all exports of minerals and other raw materials like timber, standard rated for VAT purposes. That means mining companies will need to charge output VAT and they will almost always be in a VAT payable position. Therefore, instead of ZRA paying VAT refunds to mining companies every month, it will be the mining companies who will be paying ZRA every month.

4. Institute a Genuine Fight Against Corruption by Making the Anti-Corruption Commission Independent from State House: The decision by President Hakainde Hichilema to put the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) under State House, has gone a long way in undermining the fight against corruption. Additionally, the issuing of politically aligned statements by the Acting Auditor General is a clear indication that we do not have an independent Auditor General but a UPND party cadre who is going to cherry-pick what to include in the Auditor General’s Report and ensure that they only report a fraction of the endemic corruption that currently exists. In other words, the current fight against corruption is laughable. In fact, the fight against corruption has now been weaponized and is used to harass and intimidate political opponents, and disposes them of their hard-earned property without a semblance of the due process of the law. Meanwhile, existing corruption is swept under the carpet, much to the detriment of the economy. Corruption is a cancer and for as long as the corrupt are the ones that are responsible for fighting corruption, then we are not going anywhere as a nation.

5. Respect People’s Property Rights so as to Attract Foreign as well as Local Direct Investment: The current regime has aggressively used the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010 to disposes innocent people of their property without the due process of the law. This law was passed by the MMD administration in 2010 and was meant as a tool for fighting drug trafficking. We never used to hear about it because the previous PF administration hardly used it. But the UPND administration have embraced it as their number one weapon in their lawfare against political opponents who are being treated like drug dealers and have their property disposed without any due process of the law. The due process of the law was put there for a reason. If you suspect an individual of wrongdoing, then take them to court. If they are convicted of a crime, then you can apply to the court to forfeit a portion of their property that is deemed to be proceeds of crime. You cannot just wantonly deprive an individual of their property or funds without any semblance of due process and for no good reason. Just because you don’t like the person? For example, why did the State take away Yo Maps Landcruiser? We all know that the State has power since they hold the keys to the national armoury, but that power should not be abused on powerless citizens. The economic consequence of this lack of respect for people’s property rights that we have witnessed under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration is that people are afraid of investing in Zambia. And when l say people, l mean both Zambians and foreigners. Such a situation can never be good for the economy.

6. Cut Down on Domestic Debt through Government Bonds and Treasury Bills: The wanton accumulation of domestic debt has been a major driver of Zambia’s economic downfall. Within just about two years of the UPND administration being in office, our domestic debt has risen from about K70 billion in August 2021, to about K220 billion at present !!! That is more than a three-fold increase, and yet no one seems to be talking about this. The problem with domestic debt is that instead of banks and other financial institutions such as insurance companies and pension funds, giving loans to private companies and individuals and therefore drive economic growth, they would rather lend to Government by buying GRZ bonds and Treasury Bills. That means the private sector is crowded out. When the private sector is moribund, it means ZRA will not collect enough tax to fund Government expenditure, and the Government is then forced to accumulate more domestic debt to fund it’s deficit, which further crowds out the private sector and leads to less tax revenue collected by ZRA and leads to more deficits and more accumulation of domestic debt. The vicious cycle continues and the economy goes further and further into the doldrums.

7. Revise ZESCO’s Bulk Power Purchase Agreement with Copperbelt Energy Corporation so that Taxpayers can Stop Subsidizing the Profits of a Private Entity: The bulk power purchase agreement that was signed between ZESCO and CEC soon after the UPND administration ascended to office is daylight robbery to the Zambian people. Under the agreement, CEC buys power from ZESCO at less than 50 Ngwee per Kilowatt-Hour and sells it to the mines at about K4.00 per kWh, thereby making a supernormal profit merely for transmission. Even me at a personal level, when my consumption is above 1,000 kWh per month, l pay above K2.50 per kWh, so why should CEC be paying K0.50 per kWh?

8. Adequately Capitalize the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission and Expand its Mandate: The Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) is the most sure vehicle that can be used to financially empower vulnerable citizens and allow them to become entrepreneurs by giving them small affordable loans. However, in order to achieve that, there is need roll out CEEC presence and access up to the Ward Development Committee level, and also remove political partisanship when awarding loans. People should access CEEC loans because they are Zambians and not because they support UPND. Additionally, CEEC needs to consider introducing mentorship programmes for loan recipients so that they can be guided on the dos and donts of running a business.

9. Embark on a Massive Road Infrastructure Programme Across the Country to Ensure the Country is Adequately Land-Linked: I did not agree with most of President Micheal Sata’s economic policies, but one policy that l agreed with him 100 percent was the idea that road infrastructure development is the key to unlocking the economy. If we are serious about turning around our economy, then we need to engage on a massive road Infrastructure development programme, not only for highways and toll roads as the current regime seems to think, but also for community roads.

10: Reduce Tax Rates so as to Increase the Appetite for Compliance: Whether you talk about corporate tax, Pay As You Earn, Property Transfer Tax or Customs and Excise Duties, Zambia has the highest tax rates in the region. However, we collect the least amount of tax as measured by the Tax Revenue to GDP ratio which has averaged about 18% in the past 20 years, against about 25 percent for South Africa, 26 percent for Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and eSwatini and about 27 percent for Lesotho, Angola and Malawi. So if we have the highest tax rates, then why is it that we collect the least amount of tax revenue as a proportion of GDP? Well, it is because our high tax rates reduce the appetite for compliance among taxpayers. Haven’t you wondered why businesses still engage in smuggling despite the stiff penalties of having their goods and motor vehicles impounded once caught? Well, because it is more lucrative to smuggle and risk being caught than to pay the ridiculously high tax rates at the border. That is the reason we need to reform our tax system so that businesses can find it more lucrative to pay tax at the border than risk smuggling. Once we do that, our tax revenue collection will go up and our cost of compliance enforcement will go down. Tax is a volume game. It is not a mark-up game.

PRESSURE IS MOUNTING IN THE RULING UPND PARTY

0

PRESSURE IS MOUNTING IN THE RULING UPND PARTY.

PRESS STATEMENT.

It is now becoming increasingly visible that pressure is mounting in the ruling UPND circles and the entire Government in general!

In a highly competitive sport like football, whenever time is ticking players begin panicking. A panic mood is not a good syndrome in any situation. Excessive panic and anxiety triggers more production of hormone levels. Once hormones in the body are produced in excess, the person begin to act in an uncordinated manner, impulsively and haphazardly.

For any human being to behave normally, the body must only produce hormones equivalent to the prevailing situation. Excess production of hormones results into uncoordinated actions and chances become high of making mistakes.

SIGNS OF PANIC BEING OBSERVED BY THE UPND GOVERNMENT.

There are several happenings in the New Dawn Administration signaling panic and pressure! Below are some of them;-

(1) CIVIL SERVANTS RESORTING TO BECOMING CADRES.

A critical observation indicate that many Civil Servants among them some Permanent Secretaries and Ambassadors have decided to join the ranks of praise singers, political vuvuzelas, bootlickers and political cadres. Instead of sticking to the ethics as stipulated in the Civil Service Code of Conduct, we are witnessing irrational remarks, conduct and behaviours of some Senior Government Officials.

Among those who have come out in public include Mr. Chama Fumba – Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Youth and Sports who has began conducting live broadcast of an online program where he is engaging into Political debates. We also have His Excellency Ambassador Elias Munshya of Australia who often time comment on political issues taking place in Zambia.

We also have the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security who decided to give instructions to his counterpart in the Ministry of Local Government to have a Billboard removed simply for advocating for the vulnerable people of our Society. Permanent Secretary Matembo is also on record to have joined the battle line in fighting an opposition Patriotic Front Party by transferring the Registrar of Societies to PSMD for failing to facilitate illegalities.

(2) ABUSE OF STATE INSTITUTIONS.

In any Democracy, the three Organs of the Government ought to operate independently and no one must be seen interfering in the functionalities of the Government departments.

Today we are witnessing rampant arrests of individuals and perceived political opponents on instructions from some Senior Government Officials. Politicians in Government have now become whistle blowers and are able to instruct Law Enforcement Agencies in effecting arrests on innocent citizens. Parliament is able to abuse the Constitution with impunity! The Speaker of the National Assembly is able to manipulate the Constitution by overlooking and disregarding some Laws and Orders that guide the National Assembly. The Judiciary has kept loosing its decorum as one of the most sacred arm of Government! The Executive on the other hand is being managed by cadres and people who are completely affiliated to the party in Government.

(3) TEMPERS OF OUR LEADERS ARE HIGH.

Another critical observation among those taking the lead indicate that our leaders are acting out of emotions. Most of the Senior Government Officials in the UPND Government are overly sensitive especially to criticism. Starting from His Excellency the Republican President himself, one can notice panic by listening to some responses like “Go and ask the person involved, Kutumpa uko, Akekala Pesa, Twalatampa ukubomfya Imingalato” and so forth are not acceptable from the sitting Head of State.

  • During the recent Press Conference held by President Hakainde Hichilema, it was visible that the President was overreacting to some questions. The President is also on record to have referred to some citizens as WITCHES (Mfwiti – Vernacular) and Black Mambas, Serpents or Vipers. Not only is the language strong but can not be associated to the decorum of the Office of the President.

A few months ago, the Permanent Secretary for Central Province Mr. Mwanakampwe is on record to have used vulgar language, derogatory remarks, sarcastic terms and unwholesome expressions when he referred to a radio caller and Zambians as people who shitted on themselves or soiled on themselves and that the Government is busy cleaning the faeces left by the previous administration.

Last Sunday during the Sunday Interview at Diamond Television Station, the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Information Mr. Thabo Kawana accused Mr. Coster Mwansa as a notorious media personnel a term that did not settle well with the Chief Executive Officer for the TV station who demanded for retraction of the word. Unfortunately Mr. Kawana failed to find a suitable word in place of the word notorious a term often used when referring to hard core criminals and defiant people who act with wantonness!

During the interview at KBN Television recently between Mr. Innocent Phiri commonly known as IP and the honorable Minister of Information, the Minister was put under pressure to an extent of telling the host to go and ask the involved person (s). This was in reference to who gave instructions to the Zambia Police who provided security to a private political gathering conducted by honorable Miles Bwalya Sampa at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

It has been observed generally that the UPND Senior Government officials often respond to questions angrily. The UPND feel irked, agitated, irritated and furious often time when engaging the general public.

(4) A BLAME GAME.

While a reference could always be made to the previous administration, it is now a motto and a common phenomenal for the UPND referring all failures and inadequacies to the Patriotic Front led Government. A local proverb goes on to say, ‘A failure always finds delight in accusing others’. (Uwawa tabula kabepekesho). Another adage says, ‘A bad carpenter always blames his tools’. Another one says, “A person taking an inheritance becomes responsible of everything he inherits.” ( Mpyanango apyana namabala).

On August 12, 2021 the Zambian voters unanimously revolted against the Patriotic Front led Government. It is now entirely up to the UPND led Government bringing to fruition all the promises they made while in the opposition.

(5) ELIMINATING INDEPENDENT VOICES.

It is now evident that the UPND Government is resolved muting and eliminating independent voices in the Country. During the Patriotic Front led Government, the Country witnessed the mushrooming of Civil Society Organizations, Independent Civil Rights Activists, Governance experts and Political pundits who spoke against the Patriotic Front led Government. Although efforts were made to thwart them from voicing out, no one was stopped from carrying out such advocacy.

Recently almost 90% of the Civil Society Organizations and Independent activists who were active have gone into oblivion with the exception of the ZCCB, OCIDA, Mr. Brebner Changala, Chapter One Foundation, Legal Counsel SC John Sangwa, Chairlady commonly known as Queen Kobra or the Zambian Voice (Living in the diaspora), Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa and the Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles. (MPNVP). Being an opposition leader has become the most dangerous route to take. The opposition leaders are now perceived as adversaries of the Government.

However it appears the pressure mounting on the Government is too much hence they have embarked on shattering down these independent voices. On Wednesday the 10th January 2024, the Government of the Republic of Zambia unleashed the Zambia Police from Service Headquarters to pick up Mr. Joseck Kunda (National Ambassador, Founder and Chief Executive Officer – MPNVP) for some investigations. The Police Call – Out was however rescheduled to Tuesday the 16th of January at 14 hours on Floor Number 2 in Room 229 under Fraud Section.

We promise to keep the whole Nation abreast about the details soon after the investigations. We are also ready going to jail for defending the Democracy of our Country. The Organization (MPNVP) has also decided to officially launch a complaint to MISA Zambia for the persecutions, threats and Intimidations it has been receiving so far from some Senior Government Officials and Departments of the Government. The complaint letter will also be shared with the general public within a few hours from now.

CONCLUSION.

Article number 20 (1) from the Zambian Constitution gives freedom of Expression to all the citizens of our Country. The Government must not be seen muzzling the mouths of our people. We are not in a military contonoment neither are we in a dictatorial type of Government where the rights of expressions are thwarted from the people.

We must be left free airing our views on national matters. If expressing ourselves on national matters is a criminal offense, we are challenging the UPND Government to lock us up and send us to prison.

We will remain relentless and unwavering in our endeavour to disseminate information to our people regardless of Police Call – Outs, Threats and Intimidations!

MPNVP – WE PROVIDE CIVIC EDUCATION, PUBLIC AWARENESS AND EDUCATION ON NATIONAL VALUES AND PRINCIPLES!
