Nollywood actor, movie producer and failed presidential aspirant, Yul Edochie has caused a stir online after stepping out with his wedding ring despite separation from his wife, May Edochie.

reported that following the death of their son, May had filed for divorce and was demanding N100 million from Judy Austin for adultery.

May had also filed for a restraining order denying him access to their former matrimonial home, citing safety concerns, among others, and had gotten full custody of the kids

During the court hearing, Yul Edochie had allegedly denied being married to Judy, stating that May is his only wife. Blogger, Cutie Juls alleged that Judy Austin had also concurred that she and Yul are not married.

The couple even claimed that they were shocked to find out on blogs that they were married because the reports were false.

In what seems like a damage control, Yul has gone back to wearing his wedding ring. The son of Pete Edochie had stormed Lokoja, Kogi State wearing his wedding ring.

Giving himself a new name, he urged his fans to address him as Alhaji Y Edochie, or Alhaji Isi Mmili, while adding that he is the sexiest man in Nigeria.

“Alhaji Yul Edochie

Nigerian comedienne and professor, Helen Paul has tendered a deep apology to Nollywood actress, Lizzy Anjorin over misinterpretation of her post.

Surprisingly, Iyabo took to her comment section to drop a laughing emoji which left many believing that the post was targeted at Lizzy Anjorin.

As expected, Lizzy had fired back noting how people throw shots at her, yet complain when she responds to them.

“Same people saying Sepeteri was not referring to me then are the same set of people shouting mention her name when Awokawo receives hot koboko.

Lizard no dey tire for pressup (You Gerrit?) Sepeteri I saw u on that comment section I hope you will console her when my reply hits her like a bomb”.

Now taking to her Instagram page, Helen Paul clarified that the post wasn’t targeted at her and was wrongfully interpreted. According to her, it was just a playful post and was in no way referring to the controversial actress.

“Good morning sis

Tendai Biti exposes Chamisa’s hand

CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) vice-president Tendai Biti yesterday fingered activists linked to party president Nelson Chamisa for creating parody social media accounts to link him to self-imposed interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu.

This comes after there have been allegations of a web of “sell-outs” within the opposition party, with some senior officials being accused of trying to divide the party.

Biti yesterday spoke exclusively to NewsDay after a parody post on social media platform X, in Tshabangu’s name claimed that the two had met to discuss the party’s pertinent issues.

“I’m not interested. That account must be parody account that was created by Chamisa and his team. Just check it. I have not met Tshabangu and let me repeat that I am not interested,” Biti said yesterday.

The tweet claimed that Tshabangu had met Biti at a top hotel in Harare.

“Just after my interview on ZBC, I had dinner with one of our decorated change champions and learned man Hon Biti at Crowne Plaza, as he is a victim of dictatorship, we deliberated on pertinent issues that will add value to our struggle for democracy, transparency and constitutionalism,” the account claimed.

Tshabangu’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni also disowned the account saying it was fake.

“I would think it’s a fake account,” Phugeni said.

The development also comes after Harare councillor Denford Ngadziore reportedly blocked former mayor Jacob Mafume from entering a councillors’ caucus meeting at Town House before the election of Lovejoy Chitengu.

Chitengu was elected mayor after Ian Makone was recalled by Tshabangu in the recent spate of recalls that have affected several MPs, Senators and councillors across Zimbabwe.

It is understood that Mafume is fearing for his life after he was threatened with unspecified action.

Mafume told NewsDay yesterday that he never wronged anyone, saying what happened at caucus meetings will remain regrettable.

“We are ready for service delivery of the residents and council if asked to do so. So, my conscience is clear even during the period when l was mayor,” Mafume said.

“I wronged no one except those who want to take Harare. What happened at caucus meeting stays at the caucus meeting.”

According to reports, CCC provincial taskforce chairperson for Harare Eric Murai and an official Matsunga Machuma bulldozed their way into chambers to ensure that councillors voted according to Chamisa’s instructions.

Murai and Machuma allegedly asked the councillors to show their ballots before casting their votes.

Ngadziore could neither confirm nor deny the scuffle when contacted for comment.

“l do not want to comment because it was an internal issue,” he said.

Chitengu yesterday said he was not in a position to comment on the matter.

There were, however, fears that Mafume who has remained the favourite might return as he commands respect within council.

CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi denounced Tshabangu as a Zanu-PF impostor.

“It is unwise for anybody who purports to be a democratic to associate themselves with Tshabangu,” Mkwananzi said.

However, while Tshabangu is being accused for imposing himself as CCC interim secretary-general, he recently told NewsDay that Zanu-PF had nothing to do with what is happening in CCC.

“The internal problems in the CCC are now common knowledge. The candidate selection was heavily manipulated. The party constitution, party processes, and organs were set aside by a group around President Chamisa, which is inherently driven by self-interest,” he said.

“This group of people around the president (CCC leader Nelson Chamisa) replaced party values and ethos with fear and reliance on bribes. We are cleansing CCC of this uncouth culture. Where does Zanu-PF come in?”

He said the problems in the CCC were countrywide.

“Party members across the country were disenfranchised, injured by the unjust processes engineered by the criminals around the party president.

“Not only were the so-called ‘monkeys’ affected. We need to bring justice to all our members, and the party must revert to its foundational values.”

Sierra Leone prison break: Thirteen soldiers killed in violence

0

Thirteen soldiers were among the 19 killed during Sunday’s violence in Sierra Leone, which saw gunmen attacking a military barracks and prisons, an army spokesman has said.

Sierra Leoneans spent Sunday under a nationwide curfew amid disarray in the capital, Freetown.

The information minister described the attacks as “coordinated and planned”.

A BBC correspondent saw armed men on the streets chanting that they would “clean” Sierra Leone.

As well as the 13 soldiers, one police officer, one civilian, and a private security employee were also killed along with three of the attackers, Army spokesman Col Issa Bangura said.

Eight soldiers were also wounded in action.

In the attack on one of the prisons, some 1,890 inmates escaped, the Reuters news agency said, citing a situation report.

The violence was a “very serious breach”, Information Minister Chernoh Bah told the BBC’s Newsday programme on Monday morning, after the curfew had been lifted.

“These were coordinated and properly planned attacks on the security and wellbeing of our state.”

Mr. Bah said current and former military officials were among those involved, some of whom have been detained by security forces.

Gunmen, witnessed by the BBC’s Umaru Fofana in Freetown on Sunday, wore military uniforms and balaclavas.

Addressing suggestions that there had been an attempted coup, Mr Bah said: “We have apprehended some of the major leaders of yesterday’s attack and they are currently being interrogated by our security forces.

“Once they can ascertain the full intent of their actions… we will make a declaration on whether it was an attempted coup.”

Several countries in West and Central Africa are under military rule after a series of recent coups. These include Sierra Leone’s neighbour Guinea as well as Mali, Niger and Chad.

Our correspondent says he understands that the gunmen intended to storm the presidential residence on Sunday morning. However, they moved on after failing to take control of a nearby armoury and overcome President Julius Maada Bio’s security.

A former President, Ernest Koroma, also came close to Sunday’s violence.

A military source on Sunday told the BBC that one of Mr Koroma’s guards had been detained – hours later the former leader announced that a guard of his had been killed and another abducted.

In a statement, Mr Koroma said he “strongly condemned” the violence, in which “Corporal Eddie Conteh was reportedly shot at point blank range while his colleague, Warrant Officer John Swarray was whisked away to an unknown location”.

The information minister echoed President Bio in insisting order has been restored in the capital. The sound of gunshots had drastically decreased overnight and the atmosphere was calmer, witnesses said.

However, Mr Bah said a “manhunt” for gunmen and the escaped prisoners is ongoing.

In a televised address on Sunday evening, the president described the events as a “breach of security” and an attack on democracy.

A new nine-hour night-time curfew will begin at 21:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Monday, the information ministry says.

As daily life began to resume in Freetown, one passer-by told the BBC: “Yesterday was like hell on earth for some of us that reside beside the central prison or close to the state house.

“We are happy that from the government’s side, they have put everything under control for now.”

Another complained: “We don’t want to see this type of thing in this country because we have day-to-day activities… I have my family. This is too much. Every five or six months we get this.”

The political situation in Sierra Leone has remained tense since June when President Bio was re-elected – narrowly missing out on the need to have a run-off.

International observers have condemned inconsistencies and a lack of transparency in the count, as well as acts of violence and intimidation.

In August, a number of soldiers were arrested and accused of plotting a coup against the president.

The US, European Union, UK and regional bloc Ecowas released statements strongly condemning Sunday’s violence.

On Monday afternoon, Sierra Leone’s information ministry said a delegation from Ecowas and Nigeria was set to arrive in Freetown for a meeting with the foreign minister.

It’s time to understand homosexuality – African Cardinal

0

Homosexuality should not be a criminal offence and people should be helped to understand the issue better, a top cardinal from Ghana has told the BBC.

Cardinal Peter Turkson’s comments come as parliament discusses a bill imposing harsh penalties on LGBT people.

His views are at odds with Roman Catholic bishops in Ghana, who say homosexuality is “despicable”.

Last month, Pope Francis suggested he would be open to having the Catholic Church bless same-sex couples.

He added, however, that the Church still considered same-sex relationships “objectively sinful” and would not recognise same-sex marriage.

In July, Ghanaian MPs backed measures in a proposed bill, which has still not completed its passage through parliament, that would make identifying as LGBT punishable with a three-year prison sentence. People who campaign for LGBT rights could also face up to 10 years in jail.

Gay sex is already against the law and carries a three-year prison sentence.

In their statement in August, issued along with other leading Christian groups in the country, the Ghanaian bishops also said that Western countries should “stop the incessant attempts to impose unacceptable foreign cultural values on us”, the Catholic Herald newspaper reported.

Cardinal Turkson, who has at times been regarded as a future candidate to become pope, told the BBC’s HARDtalk programme that “LGBT people may not be criminalised because they’ve committed no crime”.

“It’s time to begin education, to help people understand what this reality, this phenomenon is. We need a lot of education to get people to… make a distinction between what is crime and what is not crime,” he went on to say.

The cardinal referred to the fact that in one of Ghana’s languages, Akan, there is an expression “men who act like women and women who act like men”. He argued that this was an indication that homosexuality was not an imposition from outside.

“If culturally we had expressions… it just means that it’s not completely alien to the Ghanaian society.”

Nevertheless, Cardinal Turkson said he thought that what had led to the current efforts to pass strict anti-gay measures in several African countries were “attempts to link some foreign donations and grants to certain positions… in the name of freedom, in the name of respect for rights”.

In May, Uganda’s parliament approved a law that proposes life imprisonment for anyone convicted of homosexuality, and the death penalty for so-called aggravated cases, which include having gay sex with someone below the age of 18 or where someone becomes infected with a life-long illness such as HIV.

In August, the World Bank halted new loans to Uganda because of the measure and in October President Joe Biden said the US would be removing the country from a preferential trading arrangement because of “gross violations of internationally recognised human rights”.

Cardinal Turkson became the first-ever Ghanaian cardinal in 2003 when he was appointed by Pope John Paul II. He is now chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences.

Israel-Hamas war: Mediators seek to prolong ceasefire period

0

Mediators sought to extend a four-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas after the final exchange between Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

Israel has offered an additional day of pause in fighting for every 10 Israeli hostages released, and Hamas has said it may agree to an extension.

A Palestinian official said another 20 to 40 hostages could be freed. However, the Qatari Ombudsman said Hamas may not have located them or guaranteed their safety.

The Gulf state is also said to be trying to resolve a dispute between Israel and Hamas over who will be among the 11 hostages and 33 prisoners to be released on Monday. The Israeli prime minister’s office said discussions were still taking place”about the next list of people to be released”.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that the agreement would be extended if Hamas “can demonstrate, locate and secure a number of hostages who meet the criteria. ” of the first”.

The group includes women and children. However, he warned that Hamas’s “very complex structure” posed a challenge for Qatari mediators, as the group’s political leaders in Doha had to relay information to and from the military commander in Gaza.

“Typically what we see throughout these negotiations is that information is only provided at the time of any agreement or when it happens. But it never indicated anything before.

” In a separate interview with the Financial Times, Sheikh Mohammed said efforts to extend the ceasefire depended on Hamas identifying more than 40 women and children hostages, believed to have been taken by “civilians and gangs” group arrest. He explained that when the current ceasefire was negotiated, Hamas told mediators that it had protected only 50 of the more than 90 women and children Israel identified as hostages. Four women were freed last month, while Israeli forces operating inside Gaza rescued a female soldier and recovered the bodies of two other female hostages –one soldier and one civilian.

Hamas –considered a terrorist organization by Israel and Britain– has so far released 39 Israeli women and children as part of a deal reached last week. In return, Israel released 117 Palestinian women and girls.

Nineteen foreign nationals, one of whom had Israeli citizenship, were also handed over by Hamas under separate agreements. The pause in fighting also allows for a sharp increase in aid deliveries to Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis is worsening.

On Sunday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the return of the third group of hostages, saying it was “simply soul-stirring.” “In addition, I would say that there is also a model that shows that an additional 10 [hostages] could be released per day.

That is very welcome,” he added. But he emphasized that at the end of the ceasefire, the Israeli army will”try to achieve its goals with all its might: eliminating Hamas, ensuring that Gaza does not return to the way it was and, of course, liberating all our hostages.

” Hamas also said on Sunday that it wanted to extend the pause. A senior Palestinian official familiar with the Doha talks told the BBC that Hamas had informed mediators of its readiness to extend the ceasefire by two to four days as it could secure further releases. 20 to 40 Israeli hostages.

Israel launched a military operation in Gaza and imposed a siege in retaliation for an unprecedented cross-border attack by Hamas gunmen on October7,killing at least 1,200 people and about 240 others. others were taken hostage.

The Hamas-led government in Gaza says more than 14,800 people have been killed in the territory since the war began.

John General hides as churchgoers clobber Devil for embarrassing him

John General hides as churchgoers clobber Devil for embarrassing him

RAPE-ACCUSED Bishop John Nundwe was a no show for today’s service at his Miracle Impact Ministries International Church in Lusaka’s Matero Township.

But the Bishop fondly known amongst his flock as John General was not the only absentee.

The church that is usually filled to overspilling capacity had dozens of empty seats while those present looked like non-members who had just come to have a glimpse of the naked marathon star.

As for the handful but staunch followers of the Bishop who turned up, they spent the larger part of their service assulting the devil for his canning role in the embarrassing episode that led to the arrest of their “spiritual father” John General on a charge of rape.

Earlier in the week, John General had masterminded a one-man raid against a legion of demons responsible for causing repeated miscarriages on one of his married female congregants who resides in 10 Miles.

But as the bishop launched his attack, the woman like many genuine spiritual warfare combatants resisted his methods and choice of weapons.

The Bishop is said to have stripped to the skin and using his baby-making fluids attempted to drown the malicious demons in the woman’s body.

The battle was however disrupted by the woman’s husband who unexpectedly walked in during the healing session.

Noticing the rage and anger in the husband’s face, the Bishop like a real military general, mastered a quick escape plan.

Caring less about clothes, the 50-year old Bishop quickly sneaked out of the house, scaled a wall fence and jumping on the other side and made a hasty escape with the scorching November afternoon sun shooting its rays all over his uncovered body.

He was arrested a day later but was quickly released on bond while photos of the clothes, vehicles and its keys he left behind were widely shared on social media.

John General’s followers blame all this on his enemies as well as the devil.

According to the flock that turned up this morning, what happened to John General was well-crafted plan meant to bring shame to the church.

With the General himself unable to face his congregation, his female lieutenant stood in his place and was quite equal to the task.

The pacing female pastor declared that the devil and the Bishop’s enemies were in for a spiritual whooping for their role in the dramatic events of Wednesday afternoon.

At her orders, the unplastered church auditorium reverberated with shouts of fire as the congregants poured spiritual fire on the invisible devil.

How wrong the devil should have been if he thought all he would get were a few verbal burns for the embarrassment he caused the Bishop because shadow boxing was also on the list.

Again, at the order of the female pastor, congregants delivered ferocious jabs, hooks, uppercuts and spiritual roundkicks to the unseen body of the conniving devil.

The congregation also petitioned God to come to the help of the Bishop General.

The sweat-drenched prayer warriors jumped and paced around, they knelt, they lay down on the dirty floor as they ranted and feated prayers petitioning God to punish John General’s enemies.

Upon being noticed, curious Kalemba journalists who had disguised themselves as members of the church were made to pray in defence of John General after being forced to hold hands like lovebirds about to exchange marital vows.

But as the church service came to an end, nosy journalists from Diamond TV, Zambia Daily Mail and Grindstone Television as well as Matero residents that had strayed to the church to hear the Bishop tell his side of the story were disappointed – he did not show up!

But his wife Maureen Nundwe found courage and told the church that “the little incident” would not cause her to leave her beloved husband encouraging other women to also emulate her.

“Women in this church, do not leave your husbands over small issues like this, you need to stay with him and show the enemy how strong you are,” she said.

“Am telling you, I love my husband very much, no matter what happens or what comes. Even if the stormy rains come, they will still find me with my General. This small issue like this can not shake me,” added Maureen.

ECZ WAS WRONG TO ALLOW LUNGU ON THE BALLOT IN THE 2021 POLL – CHIZOMBE

ECZ WAS WRONG TO ALLOW LUNGU ON THE BALLOT IN THE 2021 POLL – CHIZOMBE

YOUTH activist Michelo Chizombe has maintained that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) violated the Constitution when it permitted Edgar Lungu to participate in the 2021 general elections.

He said the electoral body ought to have rejected Lungu’s nomination papers as he did not qualify to contest for the presidency thrice.

Chizombe is questioning Lungu’s eligibility to contest in the 2021 general election and future elections after being sworn into the office of President twice

He wants the Court to declare that Lungu’s participation in the previous election was unconstitutional.

Chizombe who has cited Lungu, the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the Attorney General as respondents in the matter indicated that Lungu contravened the constitution when he participated in the August 12, 2021 general elections.

In its answer to the petition, the ECZ said it abided by the requisite laws during the processing of Lungu’s nomination and did not breach any provisions of the law or constitution during that process.

Brown Kasaro who is the chief electoral officer said ECZ is guided by the relevant Electoral laws which, among others, include the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act no. 2 of 2016 , Electoral Process Act no.35 of 2016 and Regulations promulgated thereunder.

He said ECZ abided by all the requisite laws for processing nominations for presidential candidates.

“Article 52 (2) of the Constitution (Amendment) Act no. 2 of 2016 obliges the second respondent to either accept or reject nomination papers filed by a candidate wishing to contest for Presidential elections,”said Kasaro.

“Article 52 of the Constitution (Amendment) Act no.2 of 1016 provides adequate grievance mechanisms to challenge the nomination process.”

In his reply to ECZ, Chizombe said Article 52 being referred to by ECZ mandates the returning officer to reject the nomination papers if the candidate does not meet the qualifications or procedural requirements specified for election to the office of president.

“The subsequent nomination of Lungu and consequent participation in the general elections of 2021 was unconstitutional,” said Chizombe.

“The second respondent was in breach of its Constitutional provisions when it accepted the nomination of the first respondent by putting him on the ballot paper and later enabling him to participate in the August 2021 elections.”

Celebrations are good, but they can rapidly turn sour when the timing is wrong- Fred M’membe

PREMATURE CELEBRATIONS

Premature celebrations can be very dangerous. An event is said to be premature when carried out before the usual or proper time, or too early.

We’ve all had at least one encounter or more with individuals, families, groups, and organisations who threw a party or celebrated an event before it was appropriate with a sequel of profound embarrassment, shame, and harsh judgment that followed from the public court.

Celebrations are good, but they can rapidly turn sour when the timing is wrong. Sometimes, they are even better held later than before the event becomes 100 percent factual. The reason is because life’s uncertainties and situations have the potential to suddenly turn the tables in the opposite direction before the set time for the celebration is ripe.

Can this be said to be the case with Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his league celebrating “debt restructuring”?

Each time I think about premature celebrations, I reflect on what could have transpired in the network of all those who conspired to kill Jesus. What would have been going on in their minds while the body of Jesus lay dead in the tomb for three days? Those three days must have been days of great relief and jubilance.

The high priest Caiaphas, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Roman soldiers, the officials of the chief priests, the temple guards, the Sanhedrin, Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate and his wife, and even the crowd, must have thought they had eventually succeeded in seeing the end of Jesus, his “troubles” in Israel, and the ideals that he represented. Oh! Those three days must have been days of deep sighs of relief, muscle flexing, great bragging, and joyous celebrations for the “overcomers” of Christ!

On the other hand, let’s take a moment to imagine the sorrow, shame, disappointment, sense of defeat and hopelessness in “Camp Jesus”. How could the disciples of Christ walk freely with their heads high in the streets of Jerusalem? Their superhero, revolutionary, and inspirational leader had been killed. He was not just killed; he was crucified on the cross like a villain alongside other criminals.

He was condemned to the worst kind of death, and it appeared, at least for three days, as if there would be no consequences. Oh, this must have been a season of great sorrow for the disciples of Christ. In three days, Jesus’ body lay lifeless in the tomb. His disciples were covered with great sorrow and shame; but there were great celebrations in the camp of the “enemy”.

Alas, on the third day, those celebrations were abruptly terminated by the resurrection of Jesus. The stone used to prevent the lifeless of body of Christ from being stolen was miraculously rolled away by the power of God. Hallelujah! Three days later, the celebrations of the “haters” of Christ were short-lived, the tables turned because the Son of Man conquered death in one piece. What a shame their celebrations were premature. They should have waited a little longer before starting the “party”. They miscalculated! They were wrong!

COURT HEARS HOW A HERBALIST GOT MONEY FROM ESTHER LUNGU’S NIECE

TRIAL BEGINS IN WHICH FIRST LADY ESTHER LUNGU IS IN THE MAGISTRATE COURT

COURT HEARS HOW A HERBALIST GOT MONEY FROM ESTHER LUNGU’S NIECE

Lusaka – Monday 27th November 2023

A herbalist, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri, has testified how she met and obtained money from a niece to former First Lady Esther Lungu.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri testified that Catherine Banda approached her to seek help to have a child and obtain a marriage.

She also testified how she introduced Catherine Banda to her daughter, Fuhana Patel.

She stated that she charged Catherine Banda K4,000.00 for the two cases and an appreciation when the medicines bore fruit.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri is currently on the stand and more details coming.

This is a case where the former First Lady is facing theft of 3 motor vehicles and the title of a property allegedly stolen from the herbalist Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and her daughter, Fuhana Phiri.

Mrs. Esther Lungu is appearing before Lusaka Magistrate, Hon. Mbuywana Sinvula. Mama Esther Lungu, is jointly charged with James Phiri and Lee Chisulo, both police officers, Kapambwe Lungu and Catherine Banda.

This is a matter where Catherine Banda, the niece of Zambia’s former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Catherine Banda was entrusted with the safekeeping of $400,000 by Mrs. Lungu but later claimed to have given this amount to the herbalist, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and her daughter, Fuhana Patel.

When Mrs. Esther Lungu requested the return of her funds from Catherine Banda, it was established that the money was passed to Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and her daughter Fuhana Patel.

However, investigations revealed that having been surrendered to Elizabeth Phiri and Fuhana Patel, the duo proceeded to buy cars and a property in Libala.

Family meetings aimed at resolving the issue disclosed that the herbalist and her daughter had utilized the funds to acquire the same property in question from money obtained from Catherine Banda.

In an effort to reach an agreement, the parties involved decided that Elizabeth Phiri and Fuhana Patel would relinquish the certificate of title for the disputed property (stand number S/Lusaka/SLN 0003/2977, located in Libala South Water Works Area) and three motor vehicles—a Mitsubishi Canter bearing registration number BAV 5282, a Toyota Allex with registration number BAV 3986, and a Toyota Runx, also registered as BAV 3986—to compensate for the loss of money belonging to Mrs. Esther Lungu.

But in a twist of events, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Fuhana Patel this year complained to the Zambia Police that Mrs. Esther Lungu had grabbed their cars and title to their property.

This transaction led to a Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Fuhana Patel regarding the alleged theft of their vehicles and property by the former First Lady.

Socialist Party (SP) General Secretary Cosmas Musumali said it is absurd for the UPND government to continue using the PF as a scapegoat for its own failures, adding that the ruling party should go and tell Zambians that it underestimated the governance challenges.

“When the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema formed government, they blamed the PF for all sorts of things. Yes, they had a good scapegoat, but two years down the line, they cannot continue using the PF as its scapegoat,” Dr Musumali said.

He observed that there is growing anger and frustration among Zambians because of the economic miseries they have been subjected to with no hope that things would be better, cheaper and easier as was promised by the UPND in opposition.

“In fact, the more they use the PF as their scapegoat, the more ridiculous they sound and the more they make Zambians angry,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Musumali said Zambians had lost hope in the UPND government because it had proved to be a clueless, arrogant and without empathy while corruption scandals were increasing among senior and high-ranking government and party officials.

He said at a press briefing in kitchen that the poverty and hunger, which had resulted into increasing smuggling which has seen the Zambia National Service (ZNS) kill innocent people on suspicion that they were smugglers.

And Dr Musumali said the chaotic macroeconomics was a manmade problem which should be blamed on the UPND government and its leadership and not on the PF that left office more than two years ago.

“People are not happy with the UPND government. I can tell you that there is growing, discontent, anger and frustration among Zambians because of the chaotic macroeconomics and also the corruption in the distribution.

“From the beginning, we told the UPND government to stop dealing with corrupt fertiliser companies but they have continued. Corruption in the procurement of fertiliser has led to the culture of farmers sharing inputs in now the famous medas (tins). How do you expect a farmer to produce a bumper harvest from a meda?

“The incidents where the Zambia Defence Forces have clashed with smugglers resulting into people’s lives being lost is not good” Dr Musumali said.

He said it was sad that President Hakainde Hichilema had been quiet amidst of such unfortunate developments.

The SP GS and First Vice-President has told Government to call for an indaba to share ideas on how the debt restructuring process can be addressed in order to improve the economy of the country.

Dr Musumali said the government should consider dialoguing with opposition political parties and other stakeholders so see how best the debt restructuring agenda could amicably be resolved for the betterment of the country.

Sean Tembo Surprised That The Central Bank Keeps Increasing Statutory Reserve Ratio And The Monetary Policy Rate

PeP SURPRISED THAT THE CENTRAL BANK KEEPS INCREASING STATUTORY RESERVE RATIO AND THE MONETARY POLICY RATE

…..Reiterates need for Govt to issue statutory Instrument to compel mining companies to remit gross proceeds of mineral sales back to Zambia…

Liberty House, Lusaka

1. As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) we are surprised that the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) keeps on increasing the Statutory Reserve Ratio (SRR) and the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) in a quest to arrest the depreciation of the Kwacha, despite clear evidence that these two interventions are neither effective nor desirable.

2. The Statutory Reserve Ratio was at 9% at the beginning of this year, until it was increased to 11.5% in February, then to 14.5% in August and then to 17% in November and yet the Kwacha has not shown any signs of responding to these huge adjustments in SRR. The same has been the case with the Monetary Policy Rate which currently stands at 11% after being increased by more than 400 basis points in the course of 2023.

3. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we have always reiterated that the most sure and sustainable way to support the Kwacha exchange rate is by Government issuing a Statutory Instrument that would compel all mining companies to remit the gross proceeds of mineral sales back to Zambia. Currently only a small fraction of the forex proceeds from mineral sales is remitted back to Zambia. That is the reason we have a balance of payments (BoP) surplus on paper and yet there is a shortage of forex on the market.

4. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we are beginning to doubt the competence of the BOZ Governor Dr. Denny Kalyalya and his staff because they appear to be fixated on implementing wrong forex policies despite ample evidence that those policies do not work, but have a destructive effect on the financial services industry as well as the cost of living. Perhaps it is time to consider a new BOZ Governor. Someone who can formulate and implement progressive forex policies that can produce results.

The More You Love A Woman, The More Vulnerable You Become, I Stand With Ndola Mayor Jones Kalyati- Chilufya Tayali

0

Chilufya Tayali writes……

THE MORE YOU LOVE A WOMAN, THE MORE VULNERABLE YOU BECOME, SUCH THAT YOUR LIFE CAN EVEN BE DESTROYED – I STAND WITH JONES

Social media is awash with the pictures of this man, the Mayor of Ndola, Jones Kalyati, for allegedly threatening to shot his wife at a drinking place, Hot Stone Bar and Restaurant, in the night.

The Mayor was reported to the police by his wife, Bernadette Mwape, 39, who said that her husband, who is 46 years old, threatened to kill her together with her friends. Ms Mwape also said that her husband, threatened to shoot himself as well.

Police have since charged Mr. Kalyati with two counts of threatening violence and producing a gun at a social place.

I honestly don’t know the details, or rather the side of Mr. Kalyati and we might not hear it any time soon, because usually with such stories, a man is already guilty.

Very few will bother to ask, what made Mr. Kalyati so angry that he pulled a gun and almost ended a life of his wife, her friend and his. Thank God it did not happen.

But why was this man upset with the friend

How did the wife and the friend find themselves there in the night

Of course GBV encourages people to report cases of violence to police, but then what happens to this marriage

How much did the wife consider her husband before reporting this matter to the police.

How does she feel now that her husband, a public figure, is being judged as a careless and emotionally unbalanced

I wonder if they have children together, how do they feel

What is the future of this wife and the husband

I insist, I don’t know the details, but I want to stand with this man, because I know, this man would not have just acted in such a manner, there must be a story behind this marriage and at times it just drains us, men.

The issue is when you love these women so much, it is like you become so vulnerable, such that, you can even lose all you have built all you life time. At times I hate love, because it pains.

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST MY BROTHER, I HOPE THIS MATTER CAN BE RESOLVED IN A BETTER WAY, IN AS MUCH AS SUCH A CRIME HAS A STATE ELEMENT IN AS FAR AS HOW FAR IT CAN GO.

I WAS ACCUSED OF RECEIVING $300,000- HERBALIST ELIZABETH CHANJE PHIRI

I WAS ACCUSED OF RECEIVING $300,000- HERBALIST ELIZABETH CHANJE PHIRI

A witness in the case of former First Lady, Esther Lungu, has said that she was accused of stealing $300,000 by Catherine Banda, a niece to former President Edgar Lungu.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri, a Lusaka herbalist, has testified that she was a traditional doctor who came to know Catherine Banda and became her patient.

Phiri has also testified that she and her daughter signed an agreement from lawyers to surrender the property out of ignorance.

In her testimony-in-chief, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri stated that she learnt that an amount of $400,000 allegedly belonging to former First Lady Esther Lungu, was missing and that she was accused of having recieved part of it amounting to $300,000 of it from Catherine Banda.

Elizabetha Chanje Phiri also testified how she, her daughter Fuhan Patel and Catherine Banda were allegedly arrested in the quest to recover the missing $400,000.00.

Phiri’s earlier detailed reference to former President, Edgar Lungu and the Anti-Corruption Commission was expunged from the court record as it was ruled as hearsay by the Court.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri testified that she denied ever getting the $300,000 from Catherine Banda but was allegedly forced to accept and make a confession in a recording.

She stated that Catherine Banda reported to Mrs. Esther Lungu that she, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri bought 3 motor vehicles and a property in Libala from the $300,000.00 obtained from her.

She said the former First Lady allegedly recorded the conversation of her confessing to receiving the $300,000.

She named the co-accused to former first lady as persons that acted as police officers to retrieve the articles from her and her daughter, Fuhan Patel; the 3 cars, and certificate of title to the Libala property.

Elizabeth Chanje Phiri is a Lusaka based herbalist who complained to the Police that her 3 vehicles and a property were grabbed from her.

She stated that she was accused of receiving $300,000 from Catherine Banda, a niece to former President Edgar Lungu.

She was giving testimony where she alleged that her property was retrieved from her to recover the $300,000.00.

She claimed that the action to surrender her property was unfair as the property was bought from her own money and not the $300,000 from Mrs. Esther Lungu.

She said she recently bought a property in Libala and the title of the property was registered in other names recorded as Samuel Ndhlovu and Edna Banda as she hadn’t changed the title.

She said she surrendered the property because she was threatened of torture and death by Police officers investigating the matter.

In this case, the State has accused Former First Lady, Esther Lungu of stealing 3 cars and a certificate of title from Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Fuhan Patel.

BRIEF BACKGROUND

Catherine Banda, the niece to Zambia’s former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Catherine Banda, was entrusted with the safekeeping of $400,000 by Mrs. Lungu but later gave this amount to the herbalist, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri, and her daughter, Fuhana Patel.

These events occurred in August 2022.

But in a twist of events, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Fuhana Patel in January 2023year complained to the Zambia Police that Mrs. Esther Lungu had grabbed their cars and title to their property.

This transaction led to a Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Fuhana Patel regarding the alleged theft of their vehicles and property by the former First Lady.

Matter has been adjourned to 14;30hrs.

Israeli-owned ship allegedly targeted by alleged Iranian drone – USA

0

A ship owned by Israel was attacked by a suspected Iranian drone, as per a US defense official.

The ship was in the Indian Ocean when it was attacked by a triangle-shaped bomb-carrying aircraft called Shahed 136.

The ship is called the CMA CGM Symi and it sails for Malta.

“We are watching the situation carefully,” the official said. The leader did not say why the US military thought Iran did the attack.

Al-Mayadeen, a TV channel that supports the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, first told about the event.

The channel used sources that did not want to be named for the report, and later, Iranian media also reported about it.

CMA CGM, a big shipping company from France, said to ask the owner of the Symi, Eastern Pacific Shipping, for answers to questions.

That business is basically run by a very rich Israeli businessman named Idan Ofer.

The event happened while there is a break in the fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip.

A message from Eastern Pacific said they know about claims that one of their container ships might have been attacked on Friday night.

The boat is currently sailing as scheduled, according to the statement. ‘Everyone on the crew is okay. ’

Last November, the oil tanker Pacific Zircon, which flies the Liberian flag, was damaged in a possible attack by Iran off the coast of Oman.

Experts say that the Symi’s crew had been acting like they thought the ship was in danger lately.

The ship’s tracker, which helps others see where it is, was turned off on Tuesday when it left the port in Dubai.

Ships need to keep their AIS on for safety.

However, workers will switch them off if it seems like they might be attacked.

It had done the same thing before when it was traveling through the Red Sea near Yemen, where the Houthi rebels are from and supported by Iran.

Iran’s representatives at the United Nations did not answer when the Associated Press asked them for a comment.

Ukraine targets three airports overnight in retaliation for massive Russian drone strike

0

Ukraine attacked Russia with many kamikaze drones this weekend. It was the biggest attack in months.

Three of Moscow’s airports – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky – had to shut down. Flights were stopped or cancelled.

Russia had to use guns to take down 11 drones on Saturday night, and another nine on Sunday morning.

Ukraine is fighting back against the Russian attack on Saturday.

The mayor of Moscow, who supports Putin, said there was a big attack on the Russian capital.

Five small flying machines were said to be shot down in the outskirts of Moscow in some areas.

Three times buildings on the ground were damaged, but it’s not clear if any of the drones hit important targets.

The mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said that Moscow was the main goal.

“He said someone tried to do a big drone attack last night. ”

In another place, the power was turned off in Donetsk People’s Republic. This happened after Ukraine attacked the power grid in the area.

In Tula, a city not far from Moscow, a drone crashed into a house and caused an explosion. Three people got hurt and needed medical care.

Later this morning, there were new reports of a large group of drones flying over the city. People heard loud explosions, but it’s not confirmed if two kamikaze drones were shot down.

Denis Pushilin, who was chosen by Putin to be in charge of the area, said: ‘Last night, the enemy tried to harm the region’s power system. ‘
In another place, the electricity was turned off in Russian-controlled Donetsk because it seems that Ukraine attacked the power grid there.

Denis Pushilin, who was chosen by Putin to lead the occupation, said: “Last night, the enemy tried to harm the area’s power system. ”

‘Sadly, because the attacks were so big, not everything was destroyed. ‘

Parts of Donetsk city, Makeevka and most of Mariupol had no electricity.

The day after the worst attacks in Kyiv, 71 out of 75 Iranian-made drones were shot down by Ukraine’s air defenses.

Serhiy Popko, leader of the city’s government, said it was the biggest drone attack on Kyiv.

“Our soldiers destroyed most of the drones with gunfire. ” “Sadly, not everyone,” said Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We are still working to make our air defense stronger and shoot down more enemy planes. “

Over 400 dogs saved from meat trade in China

0

More than 400 dogs at risk of being slaughtered for the meat trade in China have been rescued by a Lincolnshire charity in the past two years.

Kerry Elliman, from Bin brook, near Market Rasen, runs Candy’s Hound Rescue, which works with shelters in China to welcome dogs to the UK.

She said many people were beaten, starved or locked in small cages. “I didn’t try to give up dog meat because I knew it wouldn’t happen,” she said.

“It’s an education issue.” “It raises awareness about things that people don’t know,” Ms. Elliman added The Humane Society International/UK says most people in China and across Asia do not eat dog meat and opposition to the dog meat trade is growing due to animal cruelty and risks to human health, such as the spread of diseases such as rabies.

They are working with a Chinese group called Vshine, which is campaigning across Asia to end the dog and cat meat trade.

In June this year, Vshine rescued 19 dogs from an illegal slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Yulin, a week before the city’s annual dog meat festival, in which thousands of dogs and cats are killed and eat meat.

One of the dogs rescued by Candy’s Hound Rescue is Tang Tang, who was rescued from a slaughterhouse. She had been hit repeatedly on the head and had untreated diabetes, meaning she would soon have to have an eye removed.

“She was rescued from the dog meat trade, she was in the slaughter house,” Ms. “She had all these scars on her back. What they do to weigh them – especially hounds – is tie a rope around their legs and weigh them.

“She explained that many dogs used in the illegal meat trade are “skinned alive or boiled alive” in the hope that the meat will taste better.

“I understand that bringing them to this country won’t save [all of them], but it will save the ones we save,” she said.

Wendy Higgins, of the Humane Society International/UK, said there is a“dedicated and growing animal protection movement in China”.

“[Our] Chinese partner team works tirelessly year-round to save thousands of dogs and cats from the meat trade, working with law enforcement to stop trafficked animals packed into trucks and helped shut down illegal slaughterhouses, giving life to rescued animals -saving on treatment and rehabilitation,” she said.

“We recently supported the launch in China of an information line for people to report illegal dog and cat meat trade activities, which has proven to be effective in closing restaurants and slaughterhouses operating in many places across the country. “

Sierra Leone prison breaks co-ordinated and properly planned – Minister

0

In Sierra Leone, some people with guns attacked a military base and let out hundreds of prisoners in a carefully planned attack, according to the country’s information minister.

People in Sierra Leone had to stay inside all day on Sunday because there was trouble in the capital city, Freetown.

A BBC reporter saw men with guns on the streets saying they wanted to “clean” Sierra Leone.

The attack was a “very serious violation”, said Information Minister Chernoh Bah.

“He said on the BBC’s Newsday show that these were planned and coordinated attacks on our state’s safety and well-being. This was said on Monday morning after the curfew was lifted.

Current and former soldiers were part of the group, and some of them have been captured by the security forces.

Mr Bah said that we have caught some of the main people behind yesterday’s attack and our security forces are asking them questions. Some people suggested there was a coup but that’s not true.

“Once they understand completely why they are doing it. ” We will decide if it was an attempted takeover.

Many countries in West and Central Africa are now controlled by the military after a number of recent coups. Sierra Leone borders Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Chad.

A guard who worked for former President Ernest Koroma was arrested, according to a military source who spoke to the BBC on Sunday.

Mr Koroma said in a statement a few hours later that one of his guards had been killed and another one taken away.

He said he was very against the violence. One person was shot from very close and another person was taken away to a place that is not known.

However, Bah also said that a search is going on to find the gunmen and the prisoners who escaped.

On Sunday evening, the president spoke on TV and said the events were a security breach and an attack on democracy.

A new rule says people must stay home from 9:00 pm until 6:00 am starting on Monday.

The situation in Sierra Leone has been uneasy since June when President Bio was re-elected by a small margin, just missing the need for a second round of voting.

Foreign observers have criticized the way votes were counted and complained about the lack of openness. They also raised concerns about violent acts and threats.

In August, some soldiers were taken into custody and accused of planning to overthrow the president.

The US, European Union, UK and Ecowas all spoke out against the violent events that took place on Sunday.

3 Palestinian students shot close to US university campus

0

The parents of three Palestinian students who were shot in Vermont have asked the police to look into the attack as a hate crime.

Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ahmed, and Kinnan Abdalhamid were stopped and shot by a man close to the University of Vermont campus, according to Burlington police.

The police are looking into why it happened, but they said the people who were attacked were wearing a traditional scarf and speaking Arabic.

Someone who is thought to have committed a crime has been taken into custody by the police.

The police in Burlington have identified the suspect as Jason J Eaton, who is 48 years old, according to CBS News, which is partnered with the BBC in the US.

The local police chief Jon Mura said that two victims are okay, but the third one is hurt really bad.

Three students went to Ramallah Friends School, a private non-profit school in Ramallah run by Quakers, as said by their family.

Haverford College in Pennsylvania chose Mr Abdalhamid to be one of its students. Two more people have been identified as Mr. Awartani, a student at Brown University, and Mr. Ahmed, who goes to Trinity College in Connecticut.

Rich Price, who is related to one of the victims, said that three men in their 20s were at an eight-year-old’s birthday party.

We never thought something like this could happen in our family’s neighborhood. We didn’t expect them to be walking down the street and experience this.

“A few minutes after they left, we saw police cars with sirens and flashing lights go by our house. ” And we thought, wow, something strange is happening.

“I had no idea it was my nephew and his friends. ”

Before, the families of the victims shared a message through the pro-Palestinian non-profit group Middle East Understanding, according to Reuters.

They said: “We want the police to thoroughly investigate this and consider it a hate crime. ”

“We won’t feel better until the person who shot is punished. ”

After the shooting, the Council on American-Islamic relations said they would give $10,000 to anyone who can help catch the person responsible.

Bernie Sanders, who ran for president as a Democrat from Vermont, spoke out against the recent violence.

Mr Sanders wrote that he is very upset that three young Palestinians were shot in Burlington, Vermont. There is no place for hate here, or anywhere else.

Ambassador Husam Zomlot, who is in charge of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, shared a picture of the three people on social media and said, “We need to stop the hate crimes against Palestinians. “

The EAC troops are leaving eastern DR Congo

0

The East African Community peacekeeping force will leave the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after December 8, but the bloc will remain involved in the quest for peace in troubled region, the heads of state have said.

A dispatch after the 23rd Heads of State Summit held in Arusha on Friday confirmed that Kinshasa will not extend the term of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF), although they haven’t quelled the conflict yet. Their mission is to be taken over by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces.

Nonetheless, the East African leaders have expressed their commitment to remain part and parcel of the efforts to restore calm in the eastern part of the country, if not for any other reason but for the stability and shared prosperity of the region.

While handing over the leadership of the bloc to South Sudan’s Salva Kiir, Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye said the continued fighting in DRC poses significant risks for the region, especially for the countries that neighbour it.

“The fluid security situation in eastern DRC has been a source of unease, particularly for the five EAC partner states that share borders with DRC, not only due to the concentration of the groups that may destabilise our partner states but also the humanitarian consequence which caused a spillover of displaced persons across the borders,” he said.

President Ndayishimiye credited the full deployment of the EACRF with the semblance of peace in the troubled regions of DRC, but acknowledged that “there has also been a challenge which requires give-and-take for the peace to hold.”

Evidently, the stay of the EACRF troops has neither benefited the residents of the troubled regions nor the government, with persistent citizen protests, demanding the exit of the peacekeepers.

Bad blood has also developed between Presidents Felix Tshisekedi of DRC and Paul Kagame of Rwanda, with the former constantly pointing fingers at Kigali for allegedly supporting the rebels causing chaos in the east.

Last month, the ceasefire between the rebels and government forces, brokered by Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta through the Nairobi process last year, was violated and the conflict has returned to initial levels.

President Ndayishimiye said the region must do all possible to bring an end to the war.

Ostensibly, this “appropriate mechanism” will involve a meeting between the EAC chiefs of defence forces and their counterparts from SADC, which the heads of state ordered to happen before December 8, when EACRF is supposed to leave DRC.

Peter Mathuki, EAC secretary general, said the summit agreed the CDFs will “submit their recommendations on the way forward to the defence ministers for onward transmission to the summit for consideration.”

It Was Wrong For The President Recognizing Hon Chabinga And Using Derogatory Language!

0

IT WAS WRONG FOR THE PRESIDENT RECOGNIZING HON CHABINGA AND USING DEROGATORY LANGUAGE!

PRESS STATEMENT.

As an Organization championing National Values and Principles in the Country, we are moved writing in order to disassociate His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema from embracing Hon Chabinga as leader of the opposition in Parliament.

At the same time we wish to reiterate the need for the Republican President using wholesome language whenever he is addressing the masses of people. While in Kasama during the launching of the rehabilitated Kasama Airport, the Head of State accompanied by honorable Chabinga was quoted telling him not to be afraid of anyone and in his salutations, the Head of State went ahead recognizing hon Chabinga as leader of the opposition in Parliament.

President Hichilema is on record to have been using unpalatable language whenever he is addressing large gatherings. While in opposition and in the same area of Kasama President Hakainde Hichilema is on record to have referred to the Patriotic Front Party cadres as “Bafikala” a sarcastic term meaning the manhood’s of male anatomy. During his address to the people in the presence of the Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Mwinelubemba, Kanyanta Mangala Chanda Sosala, the President recalled how the Patriotic Front Party always threatened and intimidated him and his supporters.

The President could not restrain and contain himself but succumbed to using the unwholesome expressions used in the streets like Twaleponoka or Baletuponona entailing we were being roughed up. While the President was not exaggerating the terminologies as he recited them, it is culturally unacceptable reporting insults told to someone in the presence of the elderly.

By reciting such insults in the presence of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu, the President was indirectly insulting the Chief and the entire Bemba Loyal Establishment. As an Organization, we also find it legally wrong and unethical for the President publicly recognizing and acknowledging the presence of honorable Chabinga as leader of the opposition when the matter is active before Court.

It must be mentioned that any statement uttered by the Republican President is taken to be binding and inspired. The Head of State is surrounded by a team of learned lawyers and receives updates on legal matters before anyone gets to know. By recognizing hon Chabinga President Hichilema is deliberately giving room for speculations that probably the Judiciary is already decided on the matter.

It is in public domain that the decision by the Speaker of National Assembly ushering a new team of the leader of the opposition, the Chief Whip and other privileges meant for the opposition is being contended in the Courts of Law. The general public is patiently waiting for the Courts to pronounce itself on the legitimacy of the genuine office bearers of the Patriotic Front Party.

So far the ongoing wrangles engulfed in by the Patriotic Front Party are characterized by Court injunctions and speculations have been looming that the Executive Arm of Government are meddling in internal affairs of the former ruling Party.

It is incumbent upon the Republican President to unite the Country. Presently the citizens are facing adverse economic hardships and our people are overwhelmed with prejudices and irrational killings involving some Law Enforcement Agencies and the Zambia Police. We desperately need to heal as a Nation.

It is unfortunate that President Hakainde Hichilema is not toning down in his desire to pay back evil for evil. As an Organization, we are calling upon His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema to render an unreseved apology to the entire Chiefdom of the Bemba Loyal Establishment with immediate effect!

We also wish to reiterate our earlier call for the President to be using an outline every time he is called upon to present a speech. There is a need for the President and his leadership to exercise maximum restraint and self control when handling national matters. Regardless of the provocation, the President must be above board and the Highest Office must not be adulterated.

It is important that those holding the highest office in the land maintain its decorum. It is sad that the President has decided remaining quiet on some serious happenings taking place in the Country. Instead His Excellency has reduced the Office of Presidency to promoting illegalities and preaching hurt speech and divisive language.

Instead of being guided by our National Values and Principles which is our moral compass, we have allowed ourselves to degenerate into a lawless Country! It is high time we reflected on our conduct and attitude as a Country.

Zambia bondholder deal flop prompts calls for debt restructure rethink- Reuters

0

LONDON/JOHANNESBURG, Nov 24 (Reuters) – The collapse of Zambia’s $3 billion bond rework deal this week is reverberating well beyond the country’s borders, raising doubts about the very framework designed to get bankrupt nations back on track quickly.

Zambia’s government said on Monday an International Monetary Fund-approved deal with bondholders – agreed in principle less than a month ago – could not proceed due to objections from bilateral creditors, who say the terms of the deal are not comparable to relief offered by a group of countries including France, China and India.

The setback sent the bonds of countries in the midst of debt reworks such as Ghana and Sri Lanka tumbling. It also raised fresh questions about the commitment of Western nations and multilateral lenders to help poor countries claw their way out of unmanageable debt.

“To me there is a real problem, and the real problem goes beyond Zambia,” said Brad Setser, a Council on Foreign Relations fellow and former U.S. government official, suggesting the way debt sustainability and market accessibility for low income countries was assessed might need to be adjusted.

The core of the issue is the Common Framework, a G20-backed debt negotiation architecture that aimed to smooth and speed deals for insolvent low-income countries thrust into crisis during the pandemic with a historically complicated tangle of lenders that, for the first time, included China.

It established basic principles at its 2020 launch, with more to be defined and debated along the way. Progress has, however, proven more arduous than expected.

Zambia – the Framework’s test case – is entering its fourth year of default and its long, thorny path could deter other struggling countries such as Tunisia, Egypt and Kenya from Common Framework debt reworks.

International bondholders say the Framework failed to provide the transparency on other creditors’ concessions needed to cut comparably fair deals. Most agree it provides no clarity on what fair treatment of various creditors would actually look like, nor how the value of concessions given to indebted nations should be calculated.

Milestones such as Zambia’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with bilateral creditors on restructuring $6.3 billion of debt and similar successes for Ghana raised hopes the Framework was working. Now there are once again whispers that it’s failing.

“This has not been a success and we need a reset,” said Kevin Gallagher, director of Boston University’s Global Development Policy Center.

The IMF did not respond to a request for comment sent over a U.S. holiday.

A QUESTION OF FAIRNESS
The current rift centres on “Comparability of Treatment” – a principle from the Paris Club of wealthy creditor nations aimed at ensuring its members don’t give outsized concessions compared to private lenders or others outside the group.

Zambia’s government said the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) sank the bondholder deal because it fell afoul of that principle under a “base case” scenario. This outraged bondholders, who say they offered more debt relief than bilateral lenders on a net present value (NPV) basis and a principal haircut of 18% when official creditors tabled none.

With no rules on how to calculate concessions, creditors can come to different conclusions regarding the figures.

“One of the founding principles of the Common Framework was indeed Comparability of Treatment. The fact that we’ve gotten this far without reaching a common understanding of what that is, is indeed unhelpful,” said Yvette Babb, a portfolio manager at William Blair.

Tallying different creditors’ priorities is tricky: Bondholders target shorter-term cashflows but will accept principal writedowns, while official creditors favour maturity extensions.

“Are you willing to allow deals that allow bondholders to get a lot of money out before official creditors? And are you willing to let bondholders take money out when the IMF is putting money in?,” said Setser.

HOW TO FIX IT
Zambia’s government said there was no consensus between OCC co-chairs China and France on the concessions needed from bondholders to secure a deal. The OCC statement also did not say which creditor country raised concerns, making it harder to address them, investors said.

Convincing China, which emerged as a key creditor after a decade-long lending spree, to cut deals alongside other creditors has been a core challenge.

China’s repeated assertions that it must safeguard its taxpayers’ money, its rejection of blanket acceptance that multilateral lenders do not take haircuts and its objections to the IMF’s debt sustainability assessments have upended the official lenders’ historic approaches to debt deals.

China’s central bank and finance ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Already, a group called the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable – comprised of development banks, G20 chair India and official and private creditors – is trying to work through the Framework’s snags and seek a consensus on net present values and comparability of treatment.

Any such consensus, William Blair’s Babb said, would eliminate “a large degree of this discretionary assessment”.

“That is a fundamental principle that I think could be agreed on to avoid this becoming a stumbling block in other discussions,” she added.

The IMF has also promised to rejig its debt sustainability calculations – key figures in restructurings – and make its process more transparent.

With a record $554 billion of sovereign debt in default globally, according to the Institute of International Finance, getting countries out of distress quickly is key.

Zambia’s finance minister has said the long delays have curtailed economic growth and hit the poorest of the population.

Some say the Framework, while flawed, is the only way, and that countries outside it, such as Suriname and Sri Lanka, have also struggled to finalise deals.

“Sovereign debt restructuring is a very ugly, messy process,” said Mark Sobel, a former U.S. representative at the IMF, adding its aim was also to cut through the web of competing domestic powers within China to allow it to give debtor countries much-need relief.

“To me, the Common Framework, for better or for worse, is the only game in town.”

Davido’s Aide, Israel DMW, Announces Marriage Crash

Davido’s Logistics Manager, Israel Afeare, popularly known as Israel DMW, shared news of the end of his marriage to his wife, Sheila, in an Instagram post on Saturday.

In his detailed account, Israel DMW revealed that Sheila left their home on August 8, 2023, despite his substantial support since their marriage.

Israel also detailed acts of generosity, such as providing financial support, upgrading her phone, and indulging in shopping sprees for her.

Despite these efforts, he described a shift in Sheila’s behaviour after their wedding, where she sought to impose standards on him, believing she had achieved status as a prominent figure on Instagram.

Additionally, Israel DMW pointed out that marrying someone from a Christian background and being a virgin did not ensure peace in his case.

He highlighted that his wife accused him of being a slave to his boss, Davido.

He said, “Marrying a lady because you met her during evangelism as a virgin, a pastor’s daughter, a member of the same Winners Chapel church, might not guarantee anything peace at all. Don’t be too eager or quick to trust people. People can change at any time.

“People can be very ungrateful and deceptive. I met Sheila on February 19, 2022. We became friends, which later became intimate.

“She told me she would only lose her virginity to the man that would marry her since her Ugep, Cross River, mother, who’s now 41, had earlier married two different men, with two kids, before marrying her father and that she was overdue at 21 for marriage.

“We fully agreed with her terms and conditions. I immediately upgraded her unkept situation by giving her 300k and replacing her tattered phone of less than 60k with a new iPhone 12 Pro Max of 860k in less than two weeks.

“I later also replaced the 12 Pro Max with a brand 14 Pro Max of 1.2m that she uses to slay. I did a lot of shopping for her.

“Bought her clothes and bags, including expensive human hairs she’s using without sleeping with her then. I later proposed, and she fully accepted. We later did a legal introduction to traditional and white weddings in Benin City.

“Sheila immediately changed by showing her authentic self after our wedding and wanting to set standards for me. She now felt she was blown as Juju’s wife, fully verified on Instagram, with more followers from her earlier struggling 3k followers when I met her.

“A fully sapa girl I met with just 2,700 in her account. I have never raised my hands on her any day. I don’t beat women at all. I respect them so much. The least money for her upkeep was 100k. She now wakes up to tell me that I derive dignity in begging my oga, that I am fully a slave, and that I am disgracing her on social media.

“I had earlier taken her to show same oga for the first time before we wedded when we were in Abuja Transcorp Hilton, and oga asked her straight forward if she was ready for marriage, and she fully answered by saying yes and oga immediately gave her 500k for airtime. Oga was fully present in Benin for my wedding, after cancelling a 140m show appearance. Oga,”

THE UPND’s LITANY OF SINS
[The Clear Case of Mismanagement, Incompetence, Corruption and Failure]
_____________

Zambia’s health sector under the United Party for National Development [UPND], the current ruling party, requires admission to a Governance Intensive Restorative Care Unit.

It is gravely unwell and its condition is getting alarmingly worse, hurtling towards the comatose, the moribund.

The lives of citizens are now in increased perilous danger.

What aggravates this frightening state of the nation is the ever skyrocketing cost of living which has dealt a mortal blow to the social determinants of health namely water and sanitation, food, income, employment, marriage and housing.

Cholera, a disease of filth that had once been brought under control, is back in business, and it has already claimed Zambia’s lives.

Poverty has increased, the CSO [Central Statistics Office] attests.

And poverty, as is known, spawns other vices.

For now, let us look at the following sins which the UPND has committed, sins for which this political party must be sent to a political purgatory for atonement, sins which have led many citizens to an early grave or that have terribly maimed the quality of lives of many others:

1. The wrecking of Zambia’s supply chain of medical and surgical supplies through the ilI-advised cancellation of functional long-term framework contracts which existed when they assumed State power. Critical and perennial shortages of essential medical and surgical supplies have dogged our public health facilities ever since as a consequence.

2. The knee-jerk and emotional firing of competent and professional procurement officers inspired merely by malice, unsubstantiated suspicions and political vindictiveness. And merely as a example, quantification capacity, as noted by the Parliamentary Committee on Health, was lost.

3. Failure to leverage Zambia’s mineral resources to increase the national resource envelope for purposes of increasing Zambia’s own procurement capacity and security. Instead, the UPND opted to defraud citizens through subsidising foreign mining corporates via questionable and fiscally foolish tax incentives. As a consequence, Zambia’s Bank of Zambia is now crippled as it is running out of money, and might now impose a hidden tax on citizens through quantitative easing. The quantitative tightening currently going on is not sustainable.

4. The corrupt practice of single-sourcing, which the UPND in opposition once opposed and condemned, but now so much loves to do as illustrated in the recent procurement of tainted health centre kits from Mission Pharma. For the procurement-naive, single-sourcing or direct bidding is the most preferred method by corrupt public service workers as it yields the highest kickbacks and is the most convenient way of pleasing cronies or scratching another’s back.

5. Further, instead of quarantining all the tainted kits since they constitute a matter for arbitration and litigation, and perhaps settling for reparations and compensation, the UPND questionably opted only to remove the defective commodity from the kits and distribute the rest.

6. Under the UPND, ZAMRA [Zambia Medicines Regulatory Agency] and ZAMMSA [Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency] both government departments, are NOT working harmoniously together. Though understandable but still questionable, ZAMMSA seems to be on the side of the suppliers and ZAMRA is firmly protective of citizens. The eyebrow-raising curious case of the buyer defending the supplier. The perils of single-sourcing, you see.

7. It is through the statutory pre-distribution commodity analyses that ZAMRA discovered the defective drug. But ZAMMSA, as if a branch of Mission Pharma, instead of relying on ZAMRA’s findings, went with Mission Pharma’s insistence that the commodity was fine and that another lab abroad should analyse the drug. Now results from this other lab have come. And as if a lesson that we must have confidence in our own public institutions, the results are in agreement with ZAMRA’s findings. The UPND government now has egg on its face and is now looking for ways on how to spin this. Presently uncharacteristically mute, they are still looking for the right words to use to manage the public.

8. Zambia’s state-of-the-art, model and flagship cancer hospital, the CDH, is now on its knees. A facility which used to attend to referred patients from other countries, and was a forex earner for Zambia, is now referring patients abroad. It has now become a forex drain. All this has happened because it can now no longer do radiotherapy because its machines have broken down, itself a consequence of the UPND’s failure to honour existing service contracts.

9. As all this health sector farce continues to play out, another defective drug, this time for hypertension, was being prescribed and dispensed to unsuspecting citizens by public health facilities. Thank God, it has now been recalled. But still, many citizens, who ought to litigate for the harm that they might have suffered as a consequence, who took the drug and thought that their BP troubles would resolve but didn’t, still do not know about this governance injustice. Osaulula, somebody is whispering.

10. And now the latest sin. As if such a thing as a government to government procurement ever existed, the UPND has now received health commodities from Egypt. Fifteen percent of the total consignment is now in Zambia. The scandalous thing about this shipment to Zambia is that none of the health commodities brought into the country is registered in Zambia. The UPND is now stuck. To unstuck themselves, they are now putting undue pressure on ZAMRA to issue a waiver so that Zambian citizens can begin to consume these unregistered things. The case for ensuring that all procurements must be professional and follow laid-down procedures is hereby made. But as now everyone knows, the UPND does not like, respect nor follow the rule of law.

They were so big on fixing things, these people.

We will fix it, they boisterously said.

As if desperate for power, they said many things. They even used markers and charts to illustrate their intelligence and competence.

Along the way, Catholic priests were even callously berated and advised to go back to school for their apparent dullness and failure to read graphs.

Buy today everything has unravelled. The emperor has no clothes after all.

Petrol isn’t K12 per litre.

Fertiliser isn’t K250 maximum per 50kg bag.

Mealie meal isn’t K50 per 25kg bag.

Property tax has not been abolished. Instead, wheelbarrow tax is coming.

RTSA is still a parastatal.

The presidential jet is still here, now rusty.

ECL is no longer kamwendo mjira. There is a new kid on the block now.

Tribalism is back, now more malignant.

The Kwacha is at its weakest since Sir Roy WELENSKY left Zambia. Ironically, his relatives, out of pity, are now giving us aid.

The debt remains unstructured. China is back in the picture.

Micro-management is the order of the day.

And nothing is being fixed. Well, truth be told, citizens are now the ones being fixed. They have been reduced to beggars.

Instead, things, even those that were once well and intact, are now falling apart. Just look at the National Assembly. It is now a circus, clowns and all.

And since there is a Lucifer of Zambia, surely there must exist a Lucifer of Rome. One wonders what he is thinking about this ranting and raving going on in this backwater country. I bet, in prayer for us, the Pope, doing the sign of the cross, just like Jesus did, he is also forgiving our trespasses.

Even the masters of the puppet are now getting frustrated with the puppet.

Evidently, some of their strings have snapped, aren’t working anymore.

Aikona, man, declare your assets, they now angrily demand. You promised that buggery would be fixed and normalised. Wenye, wetinyenga weo! Youths, where are you? They now ask. Come on, youths, arise, they incite!

Clearly, the self-proclaimed fixers are now themselves in a fix.

The saviour has become the devil, the messiah has become the villain.

What boggles the mind are the disturbing scenes that keep repeating themselves at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport [KKIA].

First, you see the head of State and his band hold a jamboree about non-existent debt restructuring.

Then at another time, Zambia’s Minister of Health and her band hold their own jamboree as they receive defective medicines.

You look and you scratch your head, wondering just what the hell is going on.

Then you realise that God is the one causing all this bedlam, all this irrational behaviour. You then see order in the chaos.

He allows all things, after all.

You realise that indeed He has gone ahead of Zambia.

It then dawns on you that the UPND’s reign is merely a product of time and chance, that it indeed is only a transient phenomenon, a passing political fixture, of illustrative value only for the lesson it possesses or represents to the Zambian people.

You then clearly see why He allowed them to rule also.

Then your heart settles.

A better Zambia beckons, it is on the horizon. You see it coming. This is only a phase. It too will pass.

Hope is. It remains.

Vitoria è certa!
Aluta continua!

The captives will indeed be set free.

For now though, we must fight on. We were born for times like these. Indeed, we are the breed for this hour.

PF BAHATI MP INTERACTION WITH PRESIDENT HH

25.11.2023

The PF Bahati MP Hon Leevan Chibombwe was today in the company of the Republican President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) when he toured a trade school that makes and repairs school desks in his constituency.

Under the rebranded PF leadership, we commend Hon Chibombwe for puting political rivalry aside to advance development agenda of the people of Bahati and Luapula in general.

We alive to the fact that had the PF leadership still been under the recently fallen past clique commonly known as Hijackers, a letter of suspension would have already been printed to Hon Chibombwe for finding himself next to the President of Zambia at a developmental event.

Hon Chibombwe should be assured that no such letter is being drafted under our leadership as have rebranded away from archaic politics of hatred to modern civilized politics of love in diversity under a democratic One Zambia; One Nation.

As the Bible says, there is time for everything. Time for Development agenda for the people and time for Politics for the ruling & opposition. As there is no by election in Bahati, it can only be time for development agenda by all political players for the good of all the people of Bahati constituency.

Welldone Hon Leevan Chibombwe for being a brave MP not fearing threats and intimidation from fallen PF hijackers.

UPPZ PLEADS WITH HH TO EMBRACE STATE FUNCTIONS WITH DIGNITY

…Expresses concern with the President’s recent demeanour in public events..

Sunday 26, November 2023

“UPPZ Leader Charles Chanda Calls Upon President Hichilema to Embrace State Functions with Dignity.

[KITWE, ZAMBIA] – The United Prosperous And Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) stands firm in our commitment to fostering a strong and united nation. Today, we issue a heartfelt plea to Republican President Hakainde Hichilema to embrace the duties and responsibilities of his esteemed position during state functions.

It is with utmost concern that we address the language and demeanor displayed by President Hichilema in recent public engagements. While we respect the freedom of speech and expression, we must remind the President that his words and actions hold great significance both at home and abroad. As the leader of our nation, it is his duty to portray a dignified and respectable image that reflects the greatness of our beloved country.

Our request is rooted in the core principles of patriotism, respect, and unity. We understand that politics can be a heated battlefield, but it is essential for our President to rise above petty partisan interests and fulfill the larger national duty bestowed upon him. The office of the Republican President is not a platform for personal grievances or a means to settle political scores. It is a weighty responsibility that demands the highest level of decorum and statesmanship.

Every time President Hichilema addresses the nation, it is an opportunity to unite us, inspire us, and lead us towards a path of prosperity. However, his recent language and rhetoric only serve to perpetuate division and animosity. We implore President Hichilema to look beyond political differences and focus on the greater good of our people.

The journey of a Republican President is not an easy one, and we understand the immense pressure and challenges that accompany the role. However, it is our firm belief that with every challenge comes an opportunity for growth and transformation. We invite President Hichilema to step beyond the shadow of a one-man opposition party and embrace the leadership that the people of Zambia have entrusted in him.

We extend an open hand and offer our support to President Hichilema in his quest to lead our great nation. We genuinely hope that he heeds our heartfelt plea and endeavors to conduct himself with the dignity and statesmanship befitting the position he holds.

As UPPZ, we are committed to promoting a politics of inclusion, compassion, and progress. We believe that together, we can build a Zambia that thrives in unity and peace. It is within this spirit that we express our concerns and call for a greater sense of responsibility from our Republican President.

PF Bahati MP and President HH Unite for Development in Constituency

President Hakainde Hichilema led a tour of the Mansa Trades Institute to assess the progress of a Constituency Development Fund (CDF) project focused on skills development. The project, facilitated by the institute, highlights the UPND New Dawn government’s commitment to enhancing skills development and empowering the youth across the country.

In a display of bipartisan collaboration, PF Bahati MP Hon Leevan Chibombwe joined President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) during the tour of the trade school specializing in the production and repair of school desks within his constituency. The event showcased a departure from political rivalry as Hon Chibombwe and President HH shared a common goal of advancing the development agenda for the people of Bahati and Luapula at large.

Miles Sampa, PF president has said under the rebranded PF leadership, this cooperative effort is applauded, emphasizing a commitment to setting aside political differences for the greater good. The PF leadership highlighted the shift away from past practices that would have seen punitive measures taken against a member for participating in a developmental event with the President.

In a statement, Miles Sampa assured Hon Chibombwe that there would be no such reprisals for his collaboration with President HH. The rebranded PF is moving away from divisive politics to embrace a more modern and civilized approach, fostering a culture of love and unity in diversity within the democratic principles of One Zambia; One Nation.

Quoting the Bible, the statement emphasized the importance of recognizing the right time for different pursuits—drawing a clear line between development-focused activities and political engagements. With no impending by-election in Bahati, the focus shifts entirely to the development agenda for the constituents.

During the visit, President Hichilema expressed enthusiasm for the innovative skills development initiatives taking place at the institute. Notably, learners showcased their ability to assemble high-quality desks using recycled materials, exemplifying the kind of creativity and sustainability the government aims to promote nationwide.

President Hichilema emphasized the government’s dedication to promoting local industries and job creation, stating that no school under the UPND administration would be allowed to import desks. The focus is on empowering local communities, fostering skill development, and generating employment opportunities.

The President underscored the importance of a productive Zambia, urging citizens to work diligently and in an organized manner to achieve national development goals. The commitment to skills development aligns with the broader vision of the UPND government to create a more prosperous and empowered nation.

President Hakainde Hichilema’s visit to the Mansa Trades Institute follows the government’s pledge to prioritize education, skills development, and job creation. The CDF project at the institute is just one example of the initiatives aimed at equipping Zambians with the tools they need for personal and national growth.

The day will come when people will be called to account – DPP Gilbert Phiri

The day will come when people will be called to account – DPP

By Fanny Kalonda in Livingstone

DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri says there is need for rules that truncates period within which cases can be heard.

And Phiri explained that sometimes a nolle prosequi is entered to restart the case at an opportune time in future adding that there is rarely malice involved.

Phiri noted that however long it takes for the wheels of justice to grind “the day will come when people will be called to account”.

“You see the wheels of justice grind slowly you know. Cases take too long but they grind anyway. No matter how long it takes, take it from me, the day will come when people will be called to account. I admit, we may not be as fast as we should be because of public expectation, because also we have watched so many movies where a movie that last 90 minutes there’s a trial and conviction but real life doesn’t work that way unfortunately,” Phiri said during the 2023 Zambia Anti-Corruption Conference. “The perception that prosecutions tend to be discontinued because of interference, and cases tend to be discontinued. I understand that sentiment. I understand, it’s a fair observation and I have heard it spoken about. However, one of the things, this is one of the reasons why we want to publicise our prosecution manual so that the public understands how the charging decisions are made. What are the considerations that go for example in entering a nolle prosequi, discontinuing a case? There is no secret to it. Soon you will be seeing it once it is launched on our website. And there will also be hard copies because we believe we have a duty to the public. The public needs to understand these things. They are key stakeholders. However, some of the reasons that inform why cases are discontinued are because maybe there is a settlement agreement with an accused person. So obviously, the case has to be discontinued. In other cases, there is plea bargaining where an accused person decides to plead guilty to a lower charge. So instead of aggravated robbery, for example, the accused person says I can plead to theft for example. So the court of course convicts the person and you save judicial resources, prosecutorial resources. And sometimes you can foresee that you’re not going to secure a conviction because of either technicalities or an issue that was not attended to during investigation, so you can enter a nolle with a view to restarting the case at opportune time in the future. So there are all these considerations which necessitate why a case must be stopped or withdrawn from court and rarely is there malice involved. I’m sure that’s the concern of the public.”

Phiri said law enforcement agencies can do better in cases where they arrest people when investigations are still ongoing.

“… the current cases, and the proclamation by the President [that] don’t arrest before you conclude investigations and cases are dragging, I agree. We can’t run away from that fact. People have been arrested but not arraigned in court and the appearance that it gives is as though you are still investigating the case and the only response I can give is that we can do better. What we do at the NPA (National Prosecution Authority) is we engage with law enforcement – police, DEC (Drug Enforcement Commission). We have a situation where there’s a back and forth, you have to cover all the tracks before we can make the decision to take the matter to court. So it’s a work in progress. This continuous liaison sometimes when you see someone is arrested and they’re not in court is because there’s something going on there. Maybe the prosecutor needs to be convinced that you’ve covered all the bases that would be one of the reasons for the delays. But I’ll not discount the fact that sometimes these arrests could have maybe waited a bit,” he said. “We are collaborating very well, we have the interagency taskforce chaired by the DPP and all law enforcement agencies including registries like lands, PACRA and recent organisations that joined with the Security Exchange Commission. So altogether we have 21 agencies working together under a framework. Though it is primed at asset recovery, but we are coordinating. So there are certain cases for example of course, I can’t comment on the merits of the case which is before court but I’ll use it for illustrative purposes, the goldgate scandal. So you have had the immigration looking at one facet, Anti-Corruption looking at the facet of corruption, Drug Enforcement Commission as the anchor. We have the police working together with the prosecutors and addressing all aspects of the case. So on numerous other cases we are working together. In short we are improving our collaboration and will make it better going forward.”

Phiri called for amending the Constitution in that regard.

“And then when I made reference to plea bargain, it was in the larger scheme of how a case can end and a case can end because we actually even have an Act. The plea negotiation and agreement Act and under that Act the prosecutor or even an accused person can initiate a bargain for reduction. So it’s part of the law. So it’s one way of ending a matter. So it’s legal,” he said. “I think that we need to educate the public more to understand that there are avenues in the law that can be used instead of going towards prosecution but to halt it. These are provided by the law. As to whether those are moral or not is another question but as to whether they are legal indeed because the law provides for them.”

Phiri stressed the need to amend the Constitution, by amending the definition of public officers to include DPP, Secretary to Cabinet, all permanent secretaries “so that if we dip our fingers in the cookie jar we can be prosecuted”.

“So someone gets drunk and insults someone in the market or kicks their merchandise and they are taken to the police station and a trial takes three years, in those type of instances a diversion programme would work best instead of we populate the prison population and spend prosecutorial resources to prosecute an ill-mannered person without manners. So when we institute diversion, we are going to reduce prison population but also reduce the workload for the judges and conserve resources, prosecutorial resources,” he said. “This is why you have settlement agreements, plea bargain. It’s to go towards that end. It is not everything that you should be prosecuting. Is the law really the problem? Not really. We have the legal infrastructure. Yes there are ways we can enhance and strengthen. One of the biggest problems we have is with the definition of a public officer in the Constitution, which definition does not encompass controlling officers and even I as a constitutional officeholder including the Attorney General, the Solicitor General and the others do not fall under the definition of public officer. Now the problem is in the anti-corruption Act most of those offences that have to deal with abuse they are against public officers. So now when you remove in fact, the 2016 amendments to the Constitution created three classes; constitutional office orders, state officers and then public officers but the most important officers of the state who wield authority are not captioned under public officer making a nonsense of the anti corruption Act. So when I was Anti-Corruption Commission we could not use those provisions against certain public officers. Those provisions, I think, it’s part three that has jaws we could not use them because the reference was public officer and the permanent secretary according to the Constitution is not a public office. So we have those weaknesses. So I remember we used to latch on to one provision which I think the drafters must have been tired, so instead of saying public officer they said any person, so we would go for that one which says any person. We say we use this one but I mean really the law must be clear. What is the remedy? The remedy will need will mean amending the Constitution. Amending the definition of public officers to include DPP, Secretary to Cabinet, all permanent secretaries so that if we dip our fingers in the cookie jar we can be prosecuted.”

Phiri said the law is not really the problem. “Yes there are deficiencies. You know there is this issue of human behaviour that you can’t really regulate. You can’t control it you know. There’s just, it’s just the nature of the beast. Now why are we failing to curb corruption? I think we are doing our best. I think the Anti-Corruption Commission is working. It’s doing its best. Of course, we have resource control constraints. We are understaffed and all these things but the will and the desire is there and the aspect of low convictions I agree. I mean we can’t run away from the fact. I’ll tell you one of the problems and which is a problem that we are hoping to rectify,” he said.

Phiri noted that there was a problem where people accused of corruption delay the trial by raising preliminary issues because they have the money.

“You arraign people for corruption before the courts they will hire 10 lawyers because obviously he has money. He wasn’t born with this money, he stole the money. So he brings 10 lawyers against a single prosecutor and all these 10 lawyers each will raise a preliminary issue. By the time the court…I was in a meeting in some place where we heard the story of Zimbabwe where an accused person took four years raising preliminary issues. Four years is battery of lawyers. He had the money, he had the best lawyers. By the time the trial starts, the judge is either dead, promoted or transferred. This is a problem that we have. President Frederick Chiluba, his case took eight years. Eight solid years he had a good legal team. They dragged the case or the case just dragged. After eight years, acquitted. Katele Kalumba how many years? 20! General [Sande] Kayumba from 2001, the case concluded, the judgement was delivered January 2023. Guess the verdict? Acquitted, give him back his property. Now the problem is this, we need rules of court that truncates the time period within which these cases can be heard. And the power should be in the judge. You come you’re saying you have an adjournment, sorry you can’t because regulation so so so says you can’t. So we are proceeding today. Or you’re not proceeding, your case has closed,” suggested Phiri. “Now of course there are human rights dimensions to this aspect. So that explains why we have low convictions, is, because trials take too long and we do not have rules [to] truncate but I know that the situation may be about to change.”

And Dr Obrien Kaaba, from the academia, said people should not be celebrating recovered assets that were stole because they already belong to the people.

“Our institutions should be firstly independent. Go after the corrupt without fear or favour whether past corruption or present corruption. We need to put in place good laws and implement them effectively. We need to prosecute these cases aggressively and as the Swedish Ambassador stated, although it is good to recover assets but if we are just ending there basically we are rewarding corruption because these are public resources which were gotten. So we are not punishing the people, so we also need to go aggressively in prosecuting and convicting these people,” said Dr Kaaba. “So we shouldn’t even be celebrating that we have recovered something because this is already something which belong to the people. So our celebration should be in the fact that we have nailed someone who had stolen from the people and the person is put behind bars.”

Alliance for Community Action programmes manager Jimmy Maliseni said there is need for people to show the benefit sides of democracy, integrity and ethical conduct.

“I don’t believe that we are inherently corrupt because to say that would mean that we are probably born corrupt. You cannot have 20 plus, one million people born inherently corrupt. But I think that like the DPP said we find ourselves in cultural practices that we then inherit as our own and that perpetuation of celebrating corruption for example, not being very critical of how people accumulate wealth, all work together to defeat the ends of justice but also to defeat our aspirations to push against this particular culture,” said Maliseni. “We need to begin to show the benefits, the dividends or the positive sides of democracy, of integrity, of ethical conduct. Either… we have seen the benefits of corruption and I have always argued that the corrupt in this country have found each other and they call that connections or favour stressed in so many ways. But we that believe in ethics, believe in ethical conduct, and integrity usually only often meet in settings like this one. When we leave here, DPP goes his way, you go yours, I go my way. When the corrupt leave a meeting like this one, they are exchanging business cards. They are influencing what the integrity committees, our procurement committees, are going to decide in terms of public procurement and all of that. So essentially changing this culture partly begins with us finding each other in these difficult spaces where corruption actually does take place. And that is where we as civil society must come in to begin to educate the public to understand the link between the level of quality of services they’re able to access and the way that we’re managing our public resources.- The Mast

Zelensky running for presidential office again

How do you have elections during a war?

For months, people in Ukraine have been arguing about whether they should have a presidential election in March next year like they planned or not.

No elections, not even for president, are allowed because the country is under martial law since Russia invaded in February 2022.

A lot of people in Ukraine are upset by the idea because they are worried that having a vote could take attention away from the country’s struggle for survival.

Tensions went down after President Zelensky said in November that it was not the best time for elections.

However, the problem is not finished yet and has caused a big argument in the country, like never before since Russia invaded it.

One of the main reasons for the conflict is not just Ukraine, but the US.

US political parties

US politicians, especially a few in the Republican party, are influencing the conversation about the upcoming 2024 Ukrainian elections, according to Olha Aivazovska, who leads the election monitoring network Opora.

She says that some very conservative Republicans are using the problem as a reason to stop giving military help to Ukraine.

And these sounds are becoming stronger. As Donald Trump’s focus on America’s own interests becomes more important in the Republican party, the support for Ukraine is getting stuck in US political arguments and disagreements between parties.

Many Republicans support Ukraine, but the far-right part of the party might still use this against Ukraine during the next US presidential elections.

They are doing it already. Earlier this month, Vivek Ramaswamy, who wants to be the Republican candidate for president, said that Ukraine is not a good example of democracy and is saying that they won’t have elections this year unless the US gives them more money.

Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham said that Ukraine should have presidential elections in 2024 during his visit to Kyiv in August.

President Zelensky knows he has to deal with the increasing talk from the US. The US is Ukraine’s main friend, and its military help is important for stopping Russia’s attack.

“MrZelensky said in an interview on Ukrainian TV last August that there are several things that can divide US support for Ukraine. ” One thing that worries me is the elections because I heard that some people in the Republican party are against continuing support.

Until now, Mr. Zelensky did not completely say no to the elections. He talked about the difficulties like security, laws, and money, and said he is “prepared” to run for president again if there is a war during the elections.

In a recent interview on Ukrainian TV, Mr. Zelensky said that he wants to have elections within a year or whenever they are needed.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Mr. Zelensky was thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of having elections during a time of war.

Backlash within the country.

Even if the government makes changes to the rules to allow elections, there are still many problems that make it hard to hold a vote.

Security is the most important thing.

Olena Shulyak, who leads the Servant of the People party, says it’s not possible to have elections during the war because many of our citizens are either outside the country or have been forced to leave their homes.

“We can’t have elections because we can’t keep our people safe, and our soldiers can’t participate or run for office. ”

Other problems include schools being damaged, an old list of voters, limited rights under military rule, and not enough money.

Specialists say that it’s not possible to have a fair election with competition in the current situation.

In November, a survey done by Kyiv’s International Institute of Sociology found that over 80% of people wanted to wait until the war is over before having elections.

MPs from different political parties say it’s not right to have elections next year.

President Zelensky’s unclear statements about the chance of having elections have caused problems in his own country.

Opposition politicians and news outlets said that the government was getting ready to have a presidential election in 2024. Some politicians said they want to try to become the president.

People were starting to think that President Zelensky might not be as popular because of a situation at the front line. They thought he wanted to have the elections in 2024 as scheduled while he was still well-liked.

President Zelensky said that Ukraine should not have elections right now.

The president gave a speech on TV in early November to stop the rumors. He said it’s not the right time for elections.

“We need to decide that it’s time to defend and fight. The fate of the state and people depends on it,” he said.

When will Ukraine vote for their leaders?

Alina Zagoruyko, an MP and the leader of the group that oversees elections and referendums in parliament, says that Volodymyr Zelensky will still be the rightful president even after his time in office ends next year.

According to Article 108 of Ukraine’s constitution, the current president keeps doing their job until the new president takes over.

“But if the war continues for a long time, then we might have to think about having elections even in difficult conditions,” Ms.

Many politicians and experts believe they should start getting ready for the elections after the war.

Many small towns and villages, such as Bakhmut and Avdiivka, are completely destroyed. Most of the people have either died or moved away from the country. The system for voting in an election is ruined. Organizing elections in those places will be very difficult even when there is no war.

Madagascar president Andry Rajoelina re-elected amid boycott

0

Madagascar’s occupant President Andry Rajoelina has won a third term, following a contested political race boycotted by the resistance and its allies.

He won 59% of the vote to overcome his two nearest matches, removed ex-President Marc Ravalomanana and Siteny Randriana Soloniaiko.

The political race recorded a citizen turnout of 46%, viewed as the most reduced in the island nation’s set of experiences.

The low turnout followed calls for survey blacklist by 10 official competitors.

They likewise pulled out their nominations over worries about the believability of the political decision and impugned President Rajoelina’s offered for a third term and the legitimacy of his bid, given his double French ethnicity.

The sacred court excused their requests to dissolve Mr Rajoelina’s office. He likewise excused the allegations and called them a political strategy.

Regardless of their withdrawal, the up-and-comers’ names remained on the voting form. Mr Randriana Soloniaiko acquired 14% of the vote and Mr Ravalomanana 12%.

The established court has nine days to affirm the outcomes reported on Saturday by Madagascar’s constituent body, Ceni.

The resistance aggregate that boycotted the political decision has proactively proclaimed that it won’t perceive the aftereffects of the 16 November survey.

There were a month and a half of exhibitions and conflicts with police in the development to the political race, provoking the burden of a check in time in Antananarivo just before the survey.

Mr Rajoelina, 49-year-old business visionary and previous DJ, won an official run-off vote against Mr Ravalomanana in 2018, after neither of them got over half of the vote as expected to be proclaimed president in the main round.

He had removed Mr Ravalomanana in a 2009 upset that was upheld by the military.

He faces the extreme errand of making position and working on the economy, in a nation where 75% of individuals reside underneath the neediness line, as per the World Bank.

He is likewise expected to carry political security to a country that has been shaken by long periods of political choppiness.

CIVIL SERVANTS AWARDED K550 SALARY INCREMENT ACROSS THE BOARD

Government and the Public Service Unions have agreed to review the salaries and some conditions of service for Public Service employees effective 1st January, 2024.

ZANIS reports that this follows a 10 days’ negotiations with representatives of 19 workers’ Union in Chilanga District.

In a press statement jointly issued to ZANIS in Chilanga today, signed by Public Service Management Division Permanent Secretary, Margaret Miyoba and representatives of the Unions, the parties have agreed to increase the salary by Five Hundred and Fifty Kwacha across the board.

The parties have also agreed to revise the rate of transport allowance from 15 percent to 20 percent of the monthly basic salary.

The parties further agreed to revise the rate of meal allowance from One Hundred Kwacha to One Hundred and Thirty Kwacha.

“Other existing conditions of service for the Public Service employees will continue to apply,” stated the statement in part.

Government and the Public Service Unions have further agreed to continue engaging to resolve some outstanding administrative matters relating to conditions of service.

And during a press briefing, United Public and Allied Workers Union of Zambia president Foster Matakala said public workers unions have agreed to review the salaries and some conditions for Public workers effective 1st January, 2024.

Mr. Matakala who spoke on behalf of other Unions said this is the best offer for now considering the economic challenges that the country is facing.

“We know the challenges that our country is going through and we cannot demand beyond what the Government can afford,” said Mr. Matakala.

He said in the last 10 days, various technocrats came through to explain and give the Government position on how it was performing saying the offer of K550 across the board is fair.

And speaking at the same event Deputy General Secretary for the United Health and Allied Workers Union of Zambia, Inambao Sitwala, said the K550 offer from the Government is fine considering that it is employing more public workers in the health and education sectors, who have to be on the payroll by 1st January 2024.

” We understand that with the employment of more public workers later this year, the wage bill will increase and this is why we accepted what the Government can afford at least for now,” said Mr. Sitwala.

JOHNS KALYATI, A BAD MAYOR RUNNING AWAY FROM COLLECTIVE BAD DECISION

JOHNS KALYATI, A BAD MAYOR RUNNING AWAY FROM COLLECTIVE BAD DECISION

We are not surprised that NDOLA Mayor has run away from a decision he was part of to levy Wheelbarrow Vendors in Ndola because it’s in PF DNA to mess up and start laughing at people cleaning their mess. We know it is natural for human beings to make mistakes but when one makes a mistake it is always important to say sorry and ask for forgiveness.

We say so because Mr KALYATI the NDOLA Mayor was part of the meeting that made a bad decision to levy Wheelbarrow Vendors but today he wants to come out clean stating that he can never be part of such decisions blaming council officials whom he always chairs as a Mayor.

The behavior by Mr KALYATI is not just bad corporate manners but also against the local government act on collective responsibility and code of conduct of a councilor. The NDOLA Mayor can be made accountable for this bad behavior incase his officers at the council took legal position on him for distancing himself from this bad decision they made together with him.

We would like to thank Ndola Town Clerk Mr George Mulenga for withdrawing the planned move to levy poor Wheelbarrow Vendors and this is the type of civic leadership we expected from the NDOLA Mayor than running to the public with a lie that he was not part of the decision making when he actually attended the meeting where such resolutions were passed.

Further the directive that all councils on the Copperbelt should never make such unreasonable levies to our people is welcome as it resonates with the UPND’s pro-poor policies and Manifesto which is about reducing poverty levels by empowering Zambians. This is why even the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema has rolled out the Marketeer booster loans and other direct empowerment programs to Zambiains.

The UPND government has also depoliticisized markets and bus stations so that councils can improve on their revenue collections than putting levies on Wheelbarrow Vendors. Now we know why PF and Mr Edgar Lungu wants to come back to power and one of their aim is to come and levy Wheelbarrow Vendors.

To our Copperbelt residents, we would like to assure you that your UPND government will always be there for you and will always be on your side to make sure that you enjoy your vote. To all the opposition mayors on the Copperbelt who think they can frustrate government efforts and policies, we advise you to stop because People will definitely punish you.

The Need for a New Women’s Movement: Lipstick Women and the Dissatisfaction with NGOCC

The Need for a New Women’s Movement: Lipstick Women and the Dissatisfaction with NGOCC

By Dr Mwelwa

In a recent press briefing, women from various political backgrounds came together to voice their concerns about the National Women’s Lobbying Group (NGOCC), claiming that it has lost its original purpose and become an organization catering solely to women in positions of power and privilege. These women argue that NGOCC has abandoned its grassroots origins and transformed into a platform for “lipstick women,” the elite who are disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary women.

Their grievances stem from a recent incident involving the NGOCC Chairperson, who expressed solidarity with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms. Nelly Mutti, after she faced a motion of impeachment brought by opposition MPs. Prior to the scheduled vote on the motion, the MPs were abruptly suspended, raising concerns among stakeholders and even accusations against Mutti for breaching the constitution.

NGOCC’s show of support for Mutti without consulting its members has caused controversy. Critics argue that the chairperson’s actions undermine the organization’s credibility and legitimacy, as her decision seemingly disregarded the collective voice of the women NGOCC claims to represent.

Prominent women who participated in the press briefing, including President Edith Nawakwi of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), President Saboi Imboela of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President Chishala Kateka of the New Heritage Party, and Honorable Given Katuta Mwelwa, a Member of Parliament from the Chienge Constituency, highlighted the need for a new women’s movement that addresses the concerns of all women, regardless of political background or social status.

These women argue that the time has come for a fresh movement that prioritizes grassroots empowerment, inclusivity, and genuine representation. They envision an organization that incorporates the voices of everyday women, rather than focusing exclusively on the elites and those in positions of power.

The call for a new women’s movement stems from the belief that NGOs like NGOCC have lost their way and no longer effectively advocate for women’s rights. The current system, they argue, perpetuates a cycle of exclusion and marginalization, where the concerns of ordinary women are overshadowed by the interests of a few privileged individuals.

To address this, the proposed movement would prioritize the restoration of grassroots engagement and the amplification of women’s voices across all sectors of society. It would strive to bridge the disconnect between women in power and those they claim to represent, ensuring that decisions are made collectively and reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of women from all walks of life.

Critics may argue that the existence of multiple women’s rights organizations already addresses the concerns raised by these women. However, they contend that a new movement is necessary to revitalize the fight for gender equality and redirect the focus back to the women most marginalized and affected by deeply rooted inequalities.

In conclusion, the press briefing held by influential women from various political backgrounds shed light on the need for a new women’s movement that genuinely represents grassroots women and addresses their concerns. The current state of affairs within NGOCC and other similar organizations highlight the urgency for change. This proposed movement would strive to bridge the gap between women in power and ordinary women, working towards a society where every woman’s voice is heard and gender equality is truly achieved.

HH fears rerun, wants to remove 50% + 1 clause in Constitution – M’membe

HH fears rerun, wants to remove 50% + 1 clause in Constitution – M’membe

By Kholiwe Miti

ONE bad term doesn’t deserve another, aleya, says Socialist Party president Fred M’membe.

He argues that “all these draconian intentions and actions; the violation of our constitutional order, human rights abuses, detentions and torture, abuse of the judiciary, parliament, the police and other institutions of governance are calculated at boosting Mr Hichilema’s chances of securing a second term in office”.

“This is the reason they’re so desperate and determined to install a full-blown dictatorship and make this country an outpost of senseless tyranny. Its the same reason Mr Hichilema wants to change the Constitution to perpetuate his stay in office by removing the five-year presidential term limit and introduce a seven-year term as well as remove the 50% + 1 to revert to First Past the post electoral system to avoid a rerun, which he fears he can’t win,” he charges.

Dr M’membe urged President Hakainde Hichilema to stop tyranny in the country.

“We have warned before that Mr Hakainde Hichilema is not going to de-escalate the tensions and abuses of state power and the administration of the criminal justice system.

The shrinking civic and political space, criminalisation of dissent, and all forms of human rights violations we are witnessing today are all deliberate and a product of desperation,” he wrote on his Facebook wall.

“Equally, the impunity and senseless brutality, disregard for the rule of law, and the grand corruption and looting of state resources and funds that are currently on display are deliberate. But why this extreme paranoia and brazen abuse of the criminal justice systems, law enforcement, and other institutions of governance? Why this insatiable appetite for violence, corruption, and chaos?”

Dr M’membe argued that President Hichilema and his league are fully aware that they lack the demonstrable ability and intellect to understand the state of “our economy and social political situation, and thereafter, superintend or engineer a workable and sustainable economic and political transformation for the country”.

“In fact, it dawned on this corrupt regime that they will not manage to transform this economy and ultimately guarantee a prosperous and sustainable survival of the people just after a year and a few months into their term of office. Mr Hichilema and his league know that they have no solutions to this country’s economic woes and have now resolved to become tyrannical and authoritarian in their quest to retain power beyond 2026,” he said. “All these draconian intentions and actions; the violation of our constitutional order, human rights abuses, detentions and torture, abuse of the judiciary, parliament, the police and other institutions of governance are calculated at boosting Mr Hichilema’s chances of securing a second term in office. They know that there is absolutely nothing they will do to turn the economy around and improve the livelihoods of our people so they’re in a survival or political self-preservation mode. They want power at all cost even when it’s clear that there is nothing they’re doing currently to warrant their continuity of their leadership at this point.”

Dr M’membe said they just want power for the sake of it.

“They want power for selfish reasons. They want power to protect their commercial interests and their corrupt business networks. This is the reason they’re so desperate and determined to instal a full-blown dictatorship and make this country an outpost of senseless tyranny. Its the same reason Mr Hichilema wants to change the Constitution to perpetuate his stay in office by removing the five-year presidential term limit and introduce a seven-year term as well as remove the 50% + 1 to revert to First Past the post electoral system to avoid a rerun, which he fears he can’t win,” charged Dr M’membe. “The signs are clear that they are not going to stop the spread of brutality, ethnic bigotry, division and tyranny in the country and that they will increasingly become desperate as we get towards the end of their term. We therefore need to stand together and resist the tyranny and oppression that has taken hold in the country. This road to destruction and chaos Mr Hichilema is leading us to must be stopped because nobody is prepared to be enslaved, maimed, abused and tortured just to feed Mr Hichilema’s ego, hatred, vengeance, tribalism and extreme thirst for power, money and control. We must by all legitimate means necessary stop this madness and take action to restore order, stability, prosperity, and democracy in our country.

One bad term doesn’t deserve another, aleya!”

When The Hunter Becomes the Hunted, the Case of PF & UPND

When The Hunter Becomes the Hunted, the Case of PF & UPND

By Daimone Siulapwa

In a political turn of events, the United Party for National Development (UPND), once the hunter, now finds itself hunted by the very forces it dislodged out of power.

Having ascended to power with a multitude of promises and what many now perceive as strategic propaganda, UPND in government has been met with a formidable counter-attack of propaganda from the PF.

Two and a half years into their governance, UPND struggles to rein in the economy, manage escalating prices of essential commodities, and stabilize the depreciating kwacha.

The PF, now in opposition, has mounted a comeback with a vengeance, employing an onslaught of propaganda that almost surpasses the tactics used by UPND during the 2021 elections.

The PF’s experience in the art of political manipulation is evident as they skilfully set the narrative on various genuine and fabricated issues, including fishing out HH’s classical promises from the archives of social media, such as facebook. Boy its entertaining.

Meanwhile, UPND, once the aggressor, now finds itself in a defensive position, reminiscent of a headless chicken darting aimlessly in response to the relentless pursuit by the seasoned cockerel, the PF.

This reversal of roles underscores the volatile nature of Zambian politics, where the tides of power can swiftly change direction. All this has happened within two and half years.

As UPND grapples with the challenges of governance, the PF’s resurgence highlights the potency of well-crafted propaganda and strategic narrative control which the UPND should watch out for.

A case in example is, why was Bowman Lusambo allowed to organise a horde of cadres and sympathises for his police appearance in kabwe? No experienced government would make such a mistake, UPND fail straights in the laps of PF’s bait.

In this high-stakes political game, UPND’s earlier success in hunting down the PF has come back to haunt them. The PF, leveraging their experience and mastery of political manoeuvring, now relentlessly pursues UPND day and night, leaving the ruling party on the defensive.

Our political landscape, once dominated by UPND’s promises and aggressive tactics, now witnesses a role reversal where the PF, with a renewed sense of purpose, which has mostly been created by UPND’s many mistakes, sets the tone and direction of the political and economic narrative in Zambia.

Furthermore, as UPND struggles to navigate economic challenges and quell public discontent, the PF’s onslaught, fuelled by propaganda and jealous compounds the pressure on the ruling party.

In analysing this political tug of war, it becomes evident that the sword of public opinion is a double-edged weapon. The electorate demands accountability and results, and failure to deliver invites repercussions and UPND’s current defensive posture highlights the importance of effective governance beyond the realm of promises and propaganda.

UPND’s journey from the hunter in 2021 to the hunted in 2023, serves as a cautionary tale about the unpredictable nature of political fortunes. As citizens advocating for democratic rights and checks and balances, it is imperative to scrutinize the actions of both parties.

While UPND must address the economic challenges head-on and communicate transparently with the public, the PF’s responsibility lies in ensuring that their newfound momentum is not merely a result of effective propaganda but is backed by substantive policies and actions that benefit the Zambian people.

We don’t have sufficient forex to defend kwacha –BOZ Governor Kalyalya

We don’t have sufficient forex to defend kwacha – Kalyalya

By Kholiwe Miti

WE don’t have sufficient foreign exchange to defend the local currency, says Bank of Zambia governor Denny Kalyalya.

With the BoZ increasing the monetary policy rate to 11 per cent and statutory reserve ratio to 17 per cent, Dr Kalyalya said the situation ,which “we are experiencing is not a good one anyway”.

“What we are saying is that the kwacha has been under severe pressure. Why this? Well for us we see that there has been excess demand for foreign exchange in our market mostly by the energy and manufacturing sectors amid low supply especially form the mining sector and the other factor is obviously the strengthening US dollar. Now we are not sitting idle by and watch the situation deteriorate. We monitor volatility, the rates that you see posted they already take into account some of the actions that we do to moderate that volatility. But sometimes that volatility is so strong that the moderating actions that we take are kind of overwhelmed. So what we are saying is that to moderate that volatility, to help meet some of the critical imports because if we do not do that we would probably have fuel shortages, we would not have some of the medicine that you need, we would not be current with some of the debt service, so we have to do what we have to do to ensure that the economy is facilitated to move forward,” he said. “So much of the firepower we have had to do that has been facilitated by purchases from the market, notably from the mining companies in the form of mineral taxes. Now we recognise that we do not have sufficient and will not have sufficient foreign exchange to defend the currency. No country can do that. I dare say that even bigger countries they do not do that because you are taking a losing battle especially for a country like ours which is a small open economy. The demand that you see is in two parts, there is the domestic and the external. The kwacha is visible everywhere…So if we tried to say we want to defend the currency, that would quickly be dismissed by the market because we will be overrun. So that is why as a country we adopted the flexible exchange rate to take some of that pressure from the economy.

Now you have seen in recent past other countries they have had to actually do manual interventions by devaluing their currencies to align to the new levels. Now one way to tell whether the currency is misaligned is the emergencies of black market. I would like to find out from you if you know of any black market that is happening here and that gives you an insight that the currency is aligned. Yes there are pressures but people are still going through the established channels to obtain the currency.”

Yesterday, Dr Kalyalya announced that the monetary policy rate has been raised by 100 basis points to 11 per cent due to the current and projected inflation moving further away from the six to eight per cent target band.

“The [monetary policy] committee judged that, if left unchecked, inflation could become anchored at above target levels thereby making it harder to achieve macroeconomic stability. Therefore, in the environment we have found ourselves in, a much stronger policy response is warranted to anchor inflation expectations and bring inflation back into the 6-8 per cent target band,” he said. “The committee also considered stability in the financial sector and sustained progress on fiscal consolidation in arriving at its decision. The positive spillovers from reaching a staff-level agreement on the second review of the IMF Extended Credit Facility on November 20, 2023, and progress on external debt restructuring are essential for macroeconomic stability.”

Dr Kalyalya noted that inflationary pressures have persisted and in October it rose to 12.6 per cent. He said higher food, mostly maize and its products, and retail fuel prices as well as the depreciation of the kwacha against the US dollar have been the major drivers of “these” inflationary pressures.

“In the third quarter, the kwacha depreciated by 5.8 per cent against the US dollar and the pressure has persisted in the fourth quarter. Between end-September and November 21, 2023, the kwacha depreciated by 10.9 per cent to K23.30 per US dollar. Sustained excess demand for foreign exchange, mostly by the energy and manufacturing sectors, amid low supply, especially from the mining sector, and the strengthening of the US dollar on the international market have been the key factors explaining the observed depreciation of the kwacha against major currencies,” he said. “To moderate volatility and help meet critical import requirements, the Bank had to sell a large proportion of the foreign exchange from mining taxes paid directly into the bank in US dollars. In the third quarter, US $173.0 million was sold against the US $256.4 million received as mining taxes. In addition to these sales of foreign exchange to the market, on November 13, 2023, the bank increased the statutory reserve ratio by 300 basis points to 14.5 per cent. Noting the persistence of pressures in the foreign exchange market, on November 21, 2023, the statutory reserve ratio was adjusted by a further 250 basis points to 17 per cent effective November 27, 2023. All these are extraordinary measures we thought were necessary to address an extraordinary situation that we are facing. People may say that ‘aren’t you making things worse’? Well, our view is that the situation which we are experiencing is not a good one, anyway! So we can’t just watch it because it will deteriorate further. We have to take these measures and review them as time goes by so that we can make adjustments as the situation dictates.”

Dr Kalyalya said inspite of the pressures, the sales to the market, and debt service, there was a modest build up in gross international reserves in line with the ECF arrangement.

“In this regard, reserves increased to $2.9 billion, equivalent to 3.2 months of import cover, at end September from $2.7 billion, 2.9 months of import cover, at end June. This was made possible by the second disbursement under the IMF Extended Credit Facility, project inflows, mining tax receipts, and some market purchases,” said Dr Kalyalya.-The Mast

The Power of Dialogue: Wisdom in Finding Common Ground

The Power of Dialogue: Wisdom in Finding Common Ground

By Dr Mwelwa

In the midst of conflicts and disputes, there lies a silent yet powerful tool that holds the key to resolution – dialogue. Dialogue, with its inherent wisdom, has the potential to mend broken relationships, bridge differences, and pave the way for a harmonious future.

In the political spectrum, where power struggles and ideological clashes prevail, dialogue becomes all the more essential. The recent turmoil within the former ruling party, the Patriotic Front (PF), calls for a wise and diplomatic approach to find common ground and heal the ruptures that threaten to tear them apart.

Amidst this turmoil, the suspended National Chairman for PF has extended an olive branch, calling for dialogue as the means to resolve their conflicts. This plea acknowledges the power inherent in conversation, the ability to transcend differences and work towards a shared goal of unity and progress.

But the responsibility lies not solely on the shoulders of the suspended Chairman. It is also incumbent upon President Lungu, with his statesmanship and diplomatic experience, to embrace this opportunity for dialogue. By engaging with Hon. Miles Sampa and his faction, President Lungu can demonstrate leadership and a commitment to saving the former ruling party from further division.

Opting for dialogue, rather than litigation, is wise for several reasons. If the parties were to insist on using the courts as their battleground, they would only delay the resolution of their problems. Litigation is notorious for its costs and time-consuming nature. The financial burden of legal fees and the extended duration of court proceedings can take a toll on the parties involved and hinder the timely resolution they seek.

Furthermore, litigation offers no guarantees. The uncertain outcome, dependent on the judgment of a judge or jury, only adds to the stress and anxiety of all parties involved. Rather than subjecting themselves to a rollercoaster of uncertainty, dialogue empowers them to take control of their own destiny.

In contrast to the adversarial nature of litigation, dialogue fosters an environment where parties can express their views, listen to one another, and find common ground. It allows for a genuine exchange of ideas, a respectful exploration of different perspectives, and a recognition of shared goals. By working together towards a mutually beneficial solution, dialogue has the potential to preserve personal relationships, especially in cases where the individuals involved have a history that extends beyond the current dispute.

Privacy is another significant advantage of dialogue. Unlike litigation, which exposes personal and sensitive information to public scrutiny, dialogue allows the parties to maintain confidentiality. This protects their reputation and avoids unnecessary damage that might arise from public exposure.

But perhaps the most valuable aspect of dialogue is its ability to build bridges. It transcends the barriers that divide and foster animosity, replacing them with understanding and empathy. Through dialogue, the PF can unite its members, rebuild trust, and emerge stronger, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead.

As the Nation faces a potential constitution amendment, unity and strong opposition are crucial to safeguard the interests of the Zambian people. By engaging in dialogue, the PF can unite under a common purpose and craft a strong, organized opposition that can effectively counter or oppose any constitutional amendment that may threaten democracy or the welfare of the nation.

In the grand tapestry of conflict resolution, dialogue stands as an invaluable thread. Its wisdom lies in its ability to bring people together, to heal wounds, and to cultivate understanding and compromise. Let us, therefore, embrace dialogue as a powerful tool, and through it, pave the way for a brighter, more peaceful future.

We don’t deserve our own country, laments Haabazoka

We don’t deserve our own country, laments Haabazoka

By Thomas Ngala

INSTEAD of shooting at children when dealing with smuggling of mealie meal, see a way in which you can empower citizens to export that mealie meal, former Economic Association of Zambia president Lubinda Haabazoka has said.

Dr Haabazoka said the government should clampdown on big firms who run away with millions of dollars in unpaid taxes instead of burning Zambian citizens’ camps who are trying to make a living by mining their “God given” gold.

“It’s a bit shameful for us as a country to wait for foreign diplomats to speak out before we cool down! Ideally as a nation we should focus on things that build and not divide us.

A Zambian can never be an illegal miner in his own country,” he said in a statement yesterday. “Instead of sponsoring factions to destabilise opposition political parties, that money should be spent on uniting citizens so that we tap into the knowledge of each citizen to ensure development in our country. How can the kwacha trade at almost K24 [to a dollar] with the abundance of so many resources?”

He said the country should be developing ways of benefiting from “our God given resources as a source of government revenue instead of chasing after small rental taxes from the already over taxed citizenry”.

“Instead of confiscating property from Zambians in the so-called unexplained wealth, why not give Zambians assets so that they can create wealth? We are the only country at the moment that believes that it’s only foreigners who can make money in a short period of time and not Zambians! I have heard of civil servants who have Honda Fits forfeited to the state and foreigners given a mine for $20 m[illion] only to make $200m in a year,” he said. “We are a very funny country! We demolish houses for citizens in their own country in the so-called unplanned construction but fail to build even a single room for the homeless.”

Dr Haabazoka complained that people spend time and money on lawyers in courtrooms but don’t have money to fund small businesses.

“Even my kid understands that the head of the legislature is wrong. Such a person despite their credentials has failed to run a powerful branch of government! It’s now an embarrassment. Ireen Mambilima would not have behaved in such a manner. Instead of our learned population putting this in order, some are supporting. By supporting such illegalities we are rendering our country into banana republic status. Let’s hit on the breaks countrymen,” he said. “We don’t love ourselves! We don’t deserve each other. We don’t deserve our own country. We are foreign to this land! Because we have opened ourselves to criticism! We need to learn from Zimbabwe! Zimbabweans are building mansions while we are filling our courtrooms and prisons with people that want to build houses. We need to change. We need to refocus. We should not compete amongst ourselves. We should compete against the whole world. Definitely Mainza Chona or Kenneth Kaunda did not dream of this Zambia.”

Dr Haabazoka said he can hardly recognise his country.

“A Zambia of childish politicians who can meet at a location and declare themselves a leadership of a political party? Politicians who despite going to school fail to defend the Constitution that they themselves wrote? A state that is talking about torturing its own citizens? Who did we wrong to arrive at this? Am deeply concerned. When shall we grow up as a nation? Just look at our social media idols? Those days growing up we would idolise the Dean Mung’ombas, the Nkumbulas. The Lawrence Katilungus. We wanted to be like them. We wanted to make this country great. But today I can hardly recognise my own country,” said Dr Haabazoka. Our preoccupation should be how to create generational wealth. IMF, France or whoever is heading our debt restructuring thing is wasting our time. $15 billion is peanuts for Zambia! Let’s pay off that debt using sugilite and other minerals. If we give each other tasks, within two years we can pay off whatever we owe! Let’s have an indaba where we can discuss this. This country did not educate us so that we just cheer from the stands.”- The Mast

COURT ADJOURNS CHITOTELA, CHILANGWA CASE TO MARCH 2024

….Hon Chilangwa denies firing six gunshots on August 12, 2021 at Mulyomi Village

Kawambwa… Friday November 24, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The case involving Pambashe Member of Parliament Hon Ronald Kaoma Chitotela and his Kawambwa central counterpart Hon Nickson Chilangwa and five others has been adjourned to March 4, 2024 up to March 14 2024 for continuation of defense.

The Kawambwa Subordinate Court has also set December 22, 2023; January 22, and February 22, 2024 as dates for mention for Kawambwa based accused persons.

Meanwhile, Hon Chilangwa has denied firing six gunshots on August 12, 2021 at Mulyomi Village.

In cross examination by State Advocate, Mwala Museta that he fired two gunshots in the air and four to deflate the tyres of the vehicle at the scene of crime, Hon. Chilangwa said he did not.

He said on August 12, 2021 which was an election day he was not armed as he never felt insecure in any way while in Kawambwa

The Kawambwa lawmarker narrated that the six rounds of ammunitions out of the 50 he had, four were fired by himself at his farm and two by a police officer to test the fire arm after renewing its licence.

“Your honour, there is no single police officer who came to testify in this court that I fired the gun shots in the air and deflated the tires of the motor vehicle as I was standing next to the former Police Officer in charge, Mr. John Tembo at the scene of crime,” he explained.

He said the testimony by the state witnesses that he fired the gunshots were total falsehoods and malice.

Hon. Chilangwa was testifying before Magistrate Martin Namushi for the offence of threatening violence to one UPND member at Mulyomi Village during the general elections on August 12, 2021.

And a 56 year old eye-witness, Fabian Mwenya told the court that he heard the first and second gunshots fired by the police officer after one of the occupants in the mahindra motor vehicle carrying offensive weapons in an aggressive manner advanced where the police officers and Hon Chilangwa were standing disobeyed to drop the weapons .

Mr. Mwenya denied that Mr. Chilangwa or anyone among the accused persons fired the guns shots to threaten violence to UPND members but it was the police officers to scare away an aggressive man.

He described the statements by state witnesses that they saw, Mr. Chilangwa, Davies Kaniki and Kalumba Chifumbe discharging loaded firearms at once in the air and deflating the tyres of the mahindra motor vehicle as pure lies and unfair to the accused.

This is in the matter where Hon Chitotela and Hon Chilangwa with five others are on defence for arson, malicious damage to property, threatening violence and assault.

The offences were allegedly committed on August 12, 2021 at Mulyomi Village in Pambashe Constituency during the presidential and general elections.

All the seven accused persons are being represented by defence counsels Winter Kabimba State Counsel, Jonas Zimba, Benjamin Mwelwa, Boniface Chiwala and Kampamba Kombe while State Advocates Mwala Museta and Wilson Mwale are representing the state in this matter.
