Solicitor General Marshal Muchende’s Arrogance Vindicates Us- Fred M’membe

SOLICITOR GENERAL MARSHAL MUCHENDE’S ARROGANCE VINDICATES US

Solicitor General Mr Marshal Muchende, who stands accused of running a bribery scheme, and is currently being investigated by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) can afford to be this arrogant and pompous over such serious matters because he knows where his protection lies.

The Bembas say: “Mumbwe pakulila ninshi pali eko ashintilile”.

And so, Mr Muchende’s arrogance and lack of respect towards our concerns vindicates our desire for Mr Hichilema to come clean on this issue.

Mr Muchende must know that the allegations against him are serious and its not a matter of who is above or below the other, or how the information of his investigation reached us. Our questions to him are simple:

1. Did Mr Muchende receive the US $500,000 bribe or not?

2. Why has ACC placed a restriction order on a property believed to be his?

3. Does he still feel his continued stay in the Office of Solicitor General amidst such serious allegations gives people trust and confidence in our country’s justice system?

4. What relationship does he share with Mr Hichilema?

The ACC has placed a restriction order on the property believed to belong to Mr Muchende over allegations that the Solicitor General received a sum of US$ 500,000 bribe and much more from a named former liquidator.

And we are reliably informed about the frantic attempts from State House to get the restriction order lifted and the investigations into Mr Muchende’s alleged involvement in corruption thwarted or frustrated.

Let Mr Hichilema respond to the following questions we directly raised yesterday:

1. Why is there panic and desperation in State House over Mr Muchende’s investigation?

2. Who is Mr Muchende to Mr Hichilema? What is their relationship?

3. What past business/political or other dealings has Mr Hichilema and Mr Muchende done together?

4. Since there is a traceable history between the two; isn’t Mr Hichilema compromised in this matter?

We maintain that creating networks and schemes to protect and defend Mr Muchende will not work.

Zambians are alert and watching!

Gold scam pilot demands release from detention

Gold scam pilot demands release from detention

PILOT Patrick Kawanu who is in detention at Kabwata Police Station in connection with last week’s gold scam has asked the Lusaka High Court to compel the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to release him from the filthy police cells.

Kawanu who is an employee of Mahogany Air, said the offence of giving false information to public officer which he stands charged is bailable hence there’s in no need for the police to have him under their watch after 48 hours when he has sureties lined up to secure his release.

In an affidavit in support of ex-parte notice of motion for writ of Habeas Corpus Ad Subjiciendum sworn Bwalya Nachimba of J and M Advocates, the pilot said the unreasonable delay in granting him bond and his continuous detention is unreasonable and unconditional.

“Kawanu is being held in an unsanitary, poorly ventilated and very crowded police cell at Kabwata police station despite the offense being bondable,”Nachimba said.

She said the Police and DEC have not given a valid reason for the continued detention of Kawanu on a bailable charge despite the sureties being ready to secure his release.

“It is for this reason that we crave the Court’s indulgence to order the respondents to produce the applicant before it so that they can show cause why he is being held in detention on bondable and bailable charges,”said Nachimba.

“I respectfully apply on behalf of the applicant to this Court to issue forthwith a writ directing the officer in-charge and others who may have control of Kawanu at Kabwata police station or any other police station that the applicant may be moved to have the applicant’s body before this Court after receipt of such writ to undergo and receive all and singular such matters and things this Court Shall then and there consider of and concerning the applicant on his behalf.”

Kawanu who is jointly charged with his boss Dr Jim Belemu the proprietor of Mahogany Air and representative of South Africa’s MTF, Oswald Diangamo and Shadreck Kasanda could not be arraigned before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court today as prosecutors are attending a capacity building workshop in Livingstone.

The quartet who appeared before Lusaka chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili last week Friday could not be tried in relation to their frustrated gold scam involving US$5.7 million.

The State was awaiting to indict the four together with the Egyptians who had requested to seek medical attention.

The Egyptians are identified as Micheal Botros, Walid Abelsayed, Yasser Elshishtawy, Mounir Gerges Awad, Mohamed Gouda, Tennis Demooiy, Del-a Cruse Castilla, Ali Abdull, and Noha Nadim.

The 13 were cornered by the Drug Enforcement Commission on August 14, 2023 following intelligence information that they were about to strike a dubious deal involving 602 ‘fake’ gold bars weighing 127.2 Kg.

Govt Not Being Sincere On The Ndola-lusaka Dual Carriageway Deal- Antonio Mwanza

GOVERNMENT NOT BEING SINCERE ON THE NDOLA-LUSAKA DUAL CARRIAGEWAY DEAL

21st August, 2023

We have noticed deliberate and heightened publicity stunts by the UPND Government meant to hoodwink Zambians into believing that the works on the Ndola-Lusaka dual carriageway have actually begun in ernest.

There is a carefully calculated propaganda ploy to misinform and mislead the Zambian public into believing that the controversial Ndola-Lusaka dual carriageway has actually started bearing fruits.

From the outset, we wish to reiterate our position that we totally oppose Government’s decision to use our hard-earned Zambians’ pension money from NAPSA and Workers Compensation Board Fund to finance the project and give away the rights and ownership to collect toll fees to the same foreign companies for the next 25 years from our road built with our own money.

It is our patriotic view that the correct position was for Government to pay for the construction works and then own and control the collection of toll fees. That way, the money and jobs would have remained in Zambia and not shipped outside.

The deal in its current format and structure is a daylight robbery and reeks of corruption.

Let us now address the substantive matters:

We wish to challenge Government to show proof that Macro Ocean Investment Consortium, the Consortium that has been awarded the tender to construct the Ndola-Lusaka dual carriageway has actually attained the financial clause for the Ndola-Lusaka Road.

The Consortium may have started repair works for the current single carriageway but that does not mean the project works for the dual carriageway have started.

We find the President’s vague statement that he gave at his last press briefing inaccurate and inadequate, therefore misleading.

We hereby ask Government to truthfully and comprehensively answer the following questions:

1. Has the Macro Oceans Consortium finalised funding and financial structuring and discussions with the would be funders yet?

2. If so, has the issue of expropriation and compensation for the households and businesses that will be displaced by the construction of the dual carriageway been finalised and if so who is responsible for the compensation?

3. Is the Government part of the Consortium?

4. When the total expropriation compensation amount is added to the figure quoted by the Consortium, how much does the total cost of the dual carriageway come to?

It is important that Government truthfully respond to these questions since the money involved is Zambians taxpayers’ money and it must be accounted for.

POLICE TO ARREST AND DETAIN M’MEMBE FOR SERENJE GUN CASE TODAY

POLICE TO ARREST AND DETAIN M’MEMBE FOR SERENJE GUN CASE TODAY

By Fox Reporter
SOCIALIST Party president Fred M’membe will be arrested today for an alleged offence of discharging a firearm in Serenje District during a violent by-election last year.

Dr. M’membe is scheduled to appear at 10:00hrs at Ibex Hill Police Station for questioning.

He says some officers have reliably informed him that upon arrival, he will be transferred to Central Province where he will formally be arrested, charged and detained over the Serenje incident.

In a post on his Facebook page, Dr. M’membe discloses that the so-called interrogation which the Police have summoned him over is nothing but a false display.

“We have been reliably informed that Mr Hakainde Hichilema has ordered the Zambia Police to arrest, charge and detain me over the shooting in the air to push back UPND cadres who had attacked our ECZ authorised and scheduled campaign meeting during a ward by-election in Serenje some four months ago,” Dr. M’membe stated.

“They have hatched a plan to invite me to Ibex Hill Police station, whose location they believe is more isolated than Woodlands Police station or the Zambia Police Service headquarters to prevent my supporters and sympathisers from gathering for solidarity and support, like they did the last time I was arrested and detained at Woodlands Police station.

“Ever since the incident occurred about four months ago, the Police have failed to find something on me and subsequently arrest and charge me given that there hasn’t been any basis to justify such an action,” he stated.

Dr. M’membe said the actions by Police is due to excessive pressure from President Hakainde Hichilema.

He further questioned why the Head of State is he so afraid of criticism.

“But due to excessive pressure from Mr Hichilema who had found me wanting immediately the incident happened and made prouncements to that effect, the Police command will today (Saturday) dispatch a team to Choma to get a statement from a UPND cadre they claim was injured on the head after I fired in the air to scare the UPND attackers.

“These desperate manoeuvres by Mr Hichilema and his league illustrate the shrinking of civic space; lack of rule of law and the rise in political repression in the country today. It’s obvious that Mr Hichilema is resolved to crack down on criticism and decimate the opposition political parties in this country,” Dr. M’membe stated.

The Socialist Party Leader pledged his resolve in defense of multiparty democracy.

“The Zambian people shall not allow it. Trumped-up charges or not against us; we are resolved to thwart his plans to make this country a sham multiparty democracy. Why is Mr Hichilema so narrow-minded? Why is he so delicate? Why is he so afraid of criticism? Why does he want to be idolised?

“Let Mr Hichilema know that the new Zambia he envisions, where he is more or less like an emperor or sovereign, and the citizens, his subjects to be governed by decree, will never happen. Some of us were direct participants in the efforts to return Zambia to a multiparty political dispensation and we shall never allow him to dim the light of multiparty democracy Zambia has enjoyed for the last 32 years now. We are ready for him!”

MATETE OFFERS COMFORT AND ADVICE TO INJURED SPRINTER MUZALA SAMUKONGA

MATETE OFFERS COMFORT AND ADVICE TO INJURED SPRINTER MUZALA SAMUKONGA

Samuel Matete, the former world hurdles champion in the 400 meters category, has extended words of solace and encouragement to sprinter Muzala Samukonga, who is grappling with injuries and missing the upcoming World Athletics Championship set to begin in Budapest, Hungary.

Drawing from his own experience, Matete, who faced a similar setback when he missed the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games due to injury, emphasized the importance for Samukonga to focus on his recovery without dwelling on the missed opportunity. He expressed that injuries are an inherent aspect of the sporting journey and urged Samukonga to remain mentally resilient.

Matete, in an interview, underscored that the 400m champion from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is at a tender age and should direct his energy toward rehabilitation. He offered a broader perspective by highlighting the forthcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the 2025 World Championship in Tokyo, Japan, as crucial events that Samukonga should set his sights on.

The announcement regarding Samukonga’s withdrawal from the Budapest event was made by Davison Mung’ambata, the General Secretary of Zambia Athletes (ZA). The decision was based on medical evaluation, which revealed that Samukonga’s left leg is weakened by 85 percent, necessitating a two-week recovery period.

Samukonga, who clocked an impressive 43.91 seconds at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix earlier this year, had been contending with a hamstring injury sustained during a Diamond League race in Poland. His absence from the Budapest event follows the withdrawal of defending champion Michael Norman from the United States of America, who is also nursing an injury.

Challenges on the Budapest stage were anticipated by athletes such as Steven Gardiner from the Bahamas, boasting a season-best of 43.74 seconds, as well as Wayde van Niekerk from South Africa with a season-best of 43:03 seconds.

Matete emphasized that missing the World Championship should not be perceived as a definitive setback. He imparted the wisdom that injuries are an integral part of an athlete’s journey and advised Samukonga to channel his energy into the healing process. The seasoned champion urged him to retain his focus on future opportunities, reiterating that another World Championship is awaiting him in 2025.

Matete’s words of empathy and guidance serve as a reminder that the path to athletic greatness often entails challenges, setbacks, and recoveries, all of which contribute to shaping an athlete’s resilience and determination.

Fukushima wastewater to be released into the sea by Japan as early as Thursday

0

Japan is going to start putting treated radioactive water from Fukushima into the ocean soon, on Thursday. This was announced by officials on Tuesday. People have been worried and many nearby countries have also disagreed with this decision.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that if there are no problems, the release will happen on August 24. The government decided this after having a meeting to talk about the issue.

The powerful earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011 made the water in the Fukushima nuclear plant dirty with very dangerous radioactive material. Since then, we have been pumping new water to cool down the fuel debris in the reactors. However, water from the ground and rain has been leaking in, which is making the wastewater more radioactive.

All the dirty water has been cleaned and kept in huge containers. However, there is not enough space, so they need to remove the water to safely shut down the plant. This is why they have a plan to release the water into the ocean, which has caused a lot of disagreement and debate.

In July, a group called the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approved Japan’s plan because it meets global safety rules and would have very little harmful effect on people and the environment. They confirmed this again on Tuesday after the government’s announcement, stating that they had carefully studied the plan for two years.

But this has not made many of Japan’s neighboring countries feel better, as officials from China and the Pacific Islands are expressing worry and disagreement with the plan.

In South Korea, some people have protested on the streets against the release, but the country’s leaders have shown their support for Japan. On Tuesday, the main opposition party in South Korea criticized the government for its stance. They believed that releasing this would cause a lot of damage to all the countries near Japan.

Right now, fishing communities in Japan and South Korea are concerned that the release of wastewater could destroy their way of making a living. People in the region are already starting to avoid seafood from Japan and the waters nearby, and some governments are even prohibiting imported food from certain regions in Japan, like Fukushima.

On Monday, Kishida met with the head of a group that represents fishermen from all over the country. The chairman told the prime minister that the group is still against the plan. On Tuesday, a group of people gathered outside Kishida’s office to protest against the release. They held signs and banners to show their disagreement.

According to the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), most of the dangerous elements in radioactive wastewater can be removed through different treatment processes.

The main problem is a hydrogen type called radioactive tritium that cannot be removed. Right now, there is no technology that can do that.

Officials say that the Fukushima wastewater will be mixed with a lot of clean water and let out little by little over many years. This means that the amount of tritium released will be very small and will follow the rules set by the international community.

Many other countries, like the United States, often let out water that has been cleaned but still contains a little bit of a radioactive substance called tritium from their nuclear power plants.

TEPCO, Japan’s government, and the IAEA say that tritium is found naturally in the environment, like rain and tap water, so releasing the wastewater should be okay.

But some experts think that there is a risk while others do not. Most experts believe that a little bit of tritium is not very harmful, but it could be dangerous if a lot of it is consumed.

Some scientists are concerned that making the wastewater less concentrated could hurt marine life. This could happen because harmful chemicals could build up in the weak ecosystem. A knowledgeable person, who assisted Pacific Island nations in evaluating the plan to release wastewater, told CNN that it was not a good idea and too early to do so.

Some people believe that there aren’t enough studies or data available yet to understand the long-term impact of being exposed to tritium.

The water with less salt will be let out from a tunnel underwater near the coast into the Pacific Ocean. Other organizations like the IAEA will watch over the release of the discharge both during and after it happens.

Zimbabwe’s 80-year-old ‘Crocodile’ president seeks new term

Emmerson Mnangagwa became Zimbabwe’s second president after outmanoeuvring long-time ruler Robert Mugabe with a military-backed coup in 2017 and at 80 shows no signs of wanting to retire.

Nicknamed “The Crocodile” because of his ruthlessness, Mnangagwa, who analysts judge more autocratic than his predecessor and lacking Mugabe’s intellectual flair and ideological vision, is seeking to cement his leadership in an election few expect to be free and fair.

Having presided over a collapsing economy marked by hyperinflation, unemployment, and corruption allegations, critics say he has moved to silence dissent and clamp down on the opposition.

“He is a very repressive, authoritarian figure,” said Brian Raftopoulos, a Zimbabwean political researcher.

Mnangagwa was appointed president after a battle to secure the top job ahead of Mugabe’s wife Grace that he initially looked to have lost.

In 2017, then 93-year-old Mugabe dismissed Mnangagwa as vice president, clearing the way for the first lady.

Fearing for his life, the veteran hardliner made a dramatic escape across the border to Mozambique.

His son, who was with him, described Mnangagwa sitting at a bus stop wearing a dusty suit and tattered shoes after a night-time mountain trek.

He had no belongings except a briefcase containing dollars.

But the situation turned on its head within weeks when military chiefs launched a brief takeover and Mnangagwa emerged as their chosen successor.

  • International isolation –

Mugabe’s 37-year rule was brought to an end and Mnangagwa made a triumphant return home.

Lawmakers with the ruling ZANU-PF swung behind him and he was sworn into office.

“I never thought he whom I have nurtured… that one day he would turn against me,” a mournful Mugabe said afterwards.

Mnangagwa won an election the following year with a wafer-thin majority of 50.8 percent. Opposition protests were thwarted by the army who shot dead six people.

Youthful opposition leader Nelson Chamisa challenged the results in court, but lost.

The two are squaring off for a second bout on August 23.

The 2018 vote came with gargantuan expectations of more freedom and economic revival, but these were swiftly dispelled.

Zimbabwe remains internationally isolated, its leadership targeted by Western sanctions.

Mnangagwa blames the sanctions for the country’s woes.

His supporters credit him for infrastructure projects including building schools, bridges and repairing roads.

Mnangagwa’s rise to the presidency came after decades of working closely with Mugabe after Zimbabwe won independence from Britain in 1980.

In 2008, he allegedly supervised a wave of violence that forced the opposition to pull out of a run-off vote.

He then became defence minister in a troubled power-sharing government formed with the opposition in 2009, and vice president in 2014.

  • Scarves and massacres –

Since taking office, he has tried to fashion himself as a down-to-earth politician.

Often wearing a suit, he always sports a striped scarf in Zimbabwe’s national colours at public appearances.

He has been the target of several apparent assassination attempts including a blast at a 2018 rally that killed two people.

In 2017 he was flown to South Africa for emergency treatment after eating ice cream from a dairy company owned by his arch-rival Grace Mugabe that his allies said was laced with poison.

Laconic, thick-set and with dyed black hair, Mnangagwa describes himself as a born-again Christian. He says he abstains from alcohol for six months each year.

Born in 1942, as Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa (his middle name means “adversity” in the Shona language), he completed his early education in Zimbabwe before his family relocated to neighbouring Zambia.

In 1966, he joined the struggle for independence from British colonial rule, becoming one of the young combatants who helped direct the war after undergoing training in China and Egypt.

His nickname can be traced back to his ferocious “Crocodile Gang” guerrilla unit.

After blowing up a train, he was arrested in 1964 and sentenced to death, later commuted to 10 years in prison because of his young age — leaving him a life-long vocal opponent of the death penalty.

Following independence, he was allegedly partially responsible for a brutal crackdown on opposition supporters that claimed thousands of lives of mainly the minority Ndebele ethnic group in what is commonly known as the “Gukurahundi massacre”.

The massacre remains one of the biggest stains on his reputation. Mnangagwa has admitted it was “a bad patch” in Zimbabwe’s history.

Since taking power he has held talks with tribal chiefs in a bid to settle the long-standing grievances.

Two years ago he set up a panel of chiefs to probe the massacres which the Zimbabwe Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace estimate claimed 20,000 lives.

But the hearings are yet to open.

South Africa won’t be bullied to side with global powers- Ramaphosa

South Africa will not be forced to side with any global powers, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday as he readied to host a summit of major emerging economies.

The meeting in Johannesburg this week of BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — will seek to widen their influence and push for a shift in global geopolitics.

South Africa’s hosting of the summit has turned a spotlight on its ties with the Kremlin, especially as it has refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“While some of our detractors prefer overt support for their political and ideological choices, we will not be drawn into a contest between global powers,” Ramaphosa said in a televised State of the Nation address.

“We have resisted pressure to align ourselves with any one of the global powers or with influential blocs of nations,” he said.

Ramaphosa will be joined at the BRICS summit by China’s President Xi Jinping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with President Vladimir Putin participating online. Putin decided against attending in person as he is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant that South Africa is in theory bound to enforce.

The warrant set off a diplomatic dilemma for weeks until Putin’s decision was announced, given South Africa’s longstanding ties with Russia and the former’s refusal to arrest ex-Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2015 in a similar situation.

Some 50 other leaders who are not BRICS members – among them Iran’s Ebrahim Raisi and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo – have confirmed they will attend the talks.

The BRICS nations account for about a quarter of the global economy and interest in joining the group has surged this year.

At least 40 countries have shown interest in becoming members, with 23 having submitted their applications. Some of the countries aspiring to be BRICS members include Argentina, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Cuba, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

South Africa has said it supports calls to open up membership of BRICS.

“An expanded BRICS will represent a diverse group of nations with different political systems that share a common desire to have a more balanced global order,” said Ramaphosa.

Expansion plans were first mooted last year, according to South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor

Zim Govt Sends Strong Warning To CCC President Nelson Chamisa After Bold Election Declaration

Government Sends Strong Warning To CCC President Nelson Chamisa After Bold Election Declaration

The Government has sent a strong warning to CCC President Nelson Chamisa following his bold election declaration over the weekend.

Yesterday, Chamisa held a rally at the 30 000-seater White City Stadium in Bulawayo, which was filled to the brim.

At the event, he also got a chance to introduce the party’s candidates in the upcoming elections slated for 23 August. This was also meant to clear the confusion emanating from the double candidates scandal rocking the main opposition party.

During his speech, Nelson Chamisa declared that he would not accept any result that does not declare him the winner of the Presidential poll.

He made known:

“We are briefing all the delegations. I am briefing the Chinese delegation today [20 August 2023], I am briefing the Commonwealth. They all want to hear our views, and we have told them that any result that will put [President Emmerson] Mnangagwa ahead of Chamisa is a fake result.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting services, Nick Mangwana, expressed displeasure at Chamisa:

“This is dangerous posturing. We have seen how this affected countries like the US recently. We have this posturing causing problems in 2018. Let’s make responsible utterances for the sake of our Nation.”

George Charamba, the Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications in the Office of the President of Zimbabwe, who is Nick Mangwana’s Predecessor, was more threatening.

He tweeted using his Twitter account, @Tinoedzazvimwe1:

“TINOKAVHARIRA KAKADA KURASA MUSWE!!!!! 2018 will not recur this time around!!!! Pabatei ipapo maYERO!!! (We will lock him up if he wants to be indisciplined. 2018 will not recur this time around!!!! Remember that CCC supporters!!!).”

What Happened In 2018?
In 2018, protesters were unhappy with the delays in the release of the presidential election results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). Security forces, which included soldiers and anti-riot police, used live ammunition to disperse the crowds, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more.

Donald Trump reveals he won’t attend the Republican presidential debate

0

Donald Trump said he will not be in the upcoming debate with the other people running for president from his party.

The former president mentioned that a recent poll indicated that he was significantly more popular than other candidates, making him a top choice for his political party’s nomination in the 2024 election.

It is not clear right now if Mr. Trump will be missing all the debates for the Republican primaries.

The first debate between Republican candidates running for president will take place on August 23.

Voting starts in Iowa on January 15th, 2024.

Recent surveys have consistently found that Mr. Trump, who is dealing with several criminal charges, is currently leading in the race for the Republican nomination.

Trump is needed by Republican competitors to participate in a debate. But, is he going to do it.

MrTrump wrote a message on his Truth Social platform on Sunday. He said that he will not go to the debate and mentioned that a recent poll shows that he is ahead in the race to become the Republican candidate.

MrTrump stated that the public is aware of his identity and is familiar with his successful time as the President. I won’t participate in the debates.

According to a poll conducted by CBS News, the closest competitor to a person is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, but he is significantly falling behind.

Recently, Trump kept saying that he wouldn’t participate in the Republican debates.

The ex-president wants to do an interview with Tucker Carlson, a previous host on Fox News. The interview might be shown during the first debate in Milwaukee on Wednesday. People who know about the planning shared this information with CBS.

Donald Trump said he might not go to this week’s debate, and this made some of his Republican opponents, like former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, upset.

Last week, Mr. Christie said that if someone thinks they should be chosen, if they think they have done really well before, if they think they are the best person to compete against Joe Biden, then they should come to the event on Wednesday and stop being scared.

Republican candidates who want to participate in the debate need to have received donations from at least 40,000 people and have a support of at least 1% in reputable polls.

Up until now, we know that Vice-President Mike Pence, Mr. Christie, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott have all been approved.

The first Republican debate is happening this week, at the same time when Mr. Trump has to give himself up willingly in Fulton County, Georgia.

He has to go to the state by 25 August to deal with charges of attempting to change the outcome of the 2020 election in the state.

Donald Trump is being accused of many crimes and will have multiple trials in the next year and a half. Meanwhile, he is also running for president in the 2024 US election.

In addition to the charges against Mr. Trump in Georgia, he has also been charged in Florida. The charges are for unlawfully keeping secret documents at his property called Mar-a-Lago. When he was asked to give them back, he refused.

His third accusation was revealed this month in Washington DC. Prosecutors say he kept saying he won the last presidential election when that wasn’t true.

He has often said that the charges against him are like a political “witch hunt”.

Xi of China visits South Africa for the second time this year while dealing with domestic economic problems

0

The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, will travel to South Africa on Monday in an effort to increase Beijing’s influence among rising and developing countries while relations with the United States remain extremely tense and domestic economic problems continue to grow.

A stark contrast to his globe-trotting days of diplomacy prior to the pandemic outbreak is the three-day state visit, which also includes a summit with the leaders of the BRICS rising economies

The last time the Chinese leader travelled outside of the nation was in March to meet with his “dear friend” Vladimir Putin in Moscow. There, the two authoritarian strongmen renewed their strategic alliance against the US and outlined their plans for a post-Western world order.

The BRICS grouping’s first in-person summit since the outbreak will give Xi another chance to pursue that ambition.

More than 40% of the world’s population resides in the countries that make up the bloc: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. They both want a more multipolar world and more influence over international affairs.

“Xi Jinping is not attempting to subvert the US’s dominance of the current liberal international order. His long-term objective is to transform the global order into one that is Sino-centric, according to Steve Tsang, head of the University of London’s SOAS China Institute.

Tsang stated that in order to achieve this goal, “it makes sense for China to engage with the Global South, (which is) much more numerous than Western democracies and mostly authoritarian in its governance structure.”

Chen Xiaodong, China’s ambassador to South Africa, praised BRICS as “the backbone of international fairness and justice” and “an important platform for cooperation among emerging and developing nations” ahead of Xi’s arrival on Friday.

The established structure of global governance looks to be dysfunctional, unable to function, and nonexistent. The BRICS will soon “play a leading role in the international community,” Chen told reporters.

A few days ago, US President Joe Biden met with the leaders of Japan and South Korea in a show of power and unity against the growing dangers from China. Now, Xi is travelling to South Africa.

The US and its two closest allies in Asia strengthened their military and economic ties during the Camp Davis meeting, and China was criticised for its “dangerous and aggressive behaviour” in the South China Sea.

According to Paul Nantulya, a research associate at the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies, the BRICS have gained increased strategic significance to Beijing as China and the United States are embroiled in an increasingly bitter rivalry.

Vladimir Putin won’t be present in person, so Xi will be the focus of the BRICS summit, he claimed.

Putin, who is wanted internationally for allegedly committing war crimes in Ukraine, will participate by video from Russia.

“Another multilateral platform through which China can exert influence around the world, especially in the Global South,” was how Nantulya characterised BRICS.

But Xi, who is ten months into his historic third term, is also facing a number of domestic difficulties at the time of the summit.

The long-awaited economic recovery of China following its strict pandemic lockdowns is struggling. Instead, a slew of issues, including a growing real estate crisis, rising local government debt, and deflationary pressure, plague the second-largest economy in the world.

The youth unemployment rate in the nation, which just reached back-to-back records highs, is so severe that the Chinese government has stopped disseminating data on it entirely.

Hear how other nations may be harmed and helped by China’s economic decline.

According to Yun Sun, director of the China programme at the Washington-based Stimson Centre think tank, Xi’s diplomatic charm offensive is severely hampered by the faltering economy, particularly in the Global South.

“When Xi travels to underdeveloped nations, it’s customary for China to offer sizable aid, financing, and collaboration packages. But Beijing is no longer as prepared to do that given the situation of the Chinese economy, she said.

His ability to portray the great power leader he once was is limited by the economy.

The populace in China has grown considerably more wary of their government’s extravagant expenditures abroad.

Xi’s premier international infrastructure initiative, the Belt and Road Initiative, has received a lot of criticism on Chinese social media, according to Nantulya.

“Chinese citizens are wondering why China is investing so much money abroad when there are so many issues at home.”

According to Nantulya, the Chinese government has become considerably more picky about which international projects it funds as a result of the economy’s slowdown.

Xi’s journey to Africa is his first in five years.

His most recent trip to the continent, which coincided with the BRICS conference in South Africa, included a flurry of stops in Senegal, Rwanda, and Mauritius, covering nearly the whole Sub-Saharan region.

Beijing has not yet confirmed Xi’s further stops this time.

On the margins of the BRICS meeting, the Chinese leader will co-chair the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

Chamisa preparing next Zimbabwe Cabinet

OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa exuded confidence as he promised to win tomorrow’s harmonised elections telling thousands of his supporters yesterday that he has already begun selecting his Cabinet.

Addressing thousands of supporters at the Freedom Square during the party’s final rally, dubbed Game Over, Chamisa urged his supporters to remain at polling stations within the permitted 300-metre radius to guard against electoral theft.
According to Zimbabwe’s laws, all parties stop campaigning two days before the polls.

According to Zimbabwe’s laws, all parties stop campaigning two days before the polls.

“God has remembered Zimbabwe,” Chamisa said. “Congratulations Zimbabwe. God’s plan will never fail. I have already started formulating my Cabinet.”

He added: “There is no way we will not [win]. Some people think there is going to be a repeat of 2018. Not this time. We are not donor-funded. We are funded by the citizens. We will not accept failure by Zec [Zimbabwe Electoral Commission] to fix V11s on polling stations. We will start celebrations on Thursday. Tomorrow [Tuesday] we are tying up loose ends. We have managed to provide polling agents to all the 12 374 polling stations.”
Addressing thousands of supporters at the Freedom Square during the party’s final rally, dubbed Game Over, Chamisa urged his supporters to remain at polling stations within the permitted 300-metre radius to guard against electoral theft.

Chamisa said he had briefed all the observers’ missions about Zanu-PF’s dirty tactics in connivance with Zec to rig the election.

“Let’s guard against theft. Let’s stay at the polling stations, 300 metres away and guard against theft of our vote. There is no rigging that they can do that we are not aware of.

“We have infiltrated in their shenanigans. We have infiltrated the Central Intelligence Organisation, the army, the police, everywhere,” Chamisa said.

He said President Emmerson Mnangagwa was “scared” of the elections, accusing him of gerrymandering boundaries and imposing double candidates on the CCC.

“I have met observers this morning (yesterday) and have briefed them about all these issues,” Chamisa said. “I have also written to Zec this morning [yesterday] demanding the copy of the voters roll that is going to be used in the elections.”

Chamisa said if he wins, he would not take revenge on Mnangagwa.

“To my brother Mr Mnangagwa, I will not strip you of your title as the former president. We are not going to be retributive. We will let bygones be bygones. Where you can help, you can.

“We need to unite and share ideas for the progress of our nation. Those who support Zanu-PF, it’s not about political affiliation. Go and vote for your future. Go and vote for jobs for a better economy.”

Mnangagwa and Chamisa will face off against each other after a close battle in 2018 where the opposition leader, then representing the MDC Alliance, challenged the results in the Constitutional Court.

Chamisa has refused to acknowledge Mnangagwa as Zimbabwe’s legitimate leader.

There are eight other presidential candidates in the presidential race.

Mnangagwa and Chamisa have traversed the length and breadth of Zimbabwe pleading for votes while attracting huge crowds at their rallies.

However, Mnangagwa’s Zanu-PF have been accused of bussing people to rallies while enticing them with food, drinks and seed as the party flaunted its riches.

Chamisa has, however, attracted Zimbabweans with many observers saying that they attended the rallies of their own volition.

We are going to win the Zimbabwe election by a big margin- Nelson Chamisa

More than 10,000 people, many clad in bright yellow, gathered on Monday for a climactic show of support for Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa ahead of tense general elections.

The southern African country goes to the polls on Wednesday for presidential and legislative elections, with Chamisa, 45, vying to defeat hardline 80-year-old head of state Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The vote, taking place against a backdrop of discontent at Zimbabwe’s economic crisis, is being closely watched as a barometer of popularity for the ZANU-PF party, in power since independence 43 years ago.

Supporters of Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) gathered on a parched plot of land in central Harare from where the Zanu-PF’s towering headquarters are visible.

“Zimbabwe, our time has come. This is the time!” Chamisa told the crowd from a podium.

“We are going to win with a big and wide margin. Let’s just prepare for our inauguration.”

The rally was the finale to a bruising campaign in which dozens of Chamisa’s campaign meetings were banned and some of his supporters assaulted by suspected ZANU activists.

Despite over 100 meetings being blocked, said Chamisa, who is also a Pentecostal preacher, “God has said this is my time to be the president.”

CCC supporters chanted in Shona, “ZANU-PF rule will end, vote for Chamisa, poverty will end, Chamisa get into office and end corruption… bring suffering to an end.”

The CCC is popular in Harare and other cities, particularly among young people who account for the lion’s share of the electorate, whereas ZANU-PF is stronger in rural areas.

‘Time for change’
“We have been under the same government for 43 years and there is no change,” said David, a 25-year-old sociology graduate from Harare.

He preferred to give only his first name in a country where the opposition regularly complain about intimidation.

“It’s the right time for change and Chamisa is the right guy to deliver what we want as young people,” David told AFP at the rally.

“There is no hope and no light in Zimbabwe as long as we have this ZANU-PF leadership,” said another supporter, a 35-year-old unemployed man who gave his name in Tendai. He was fully dressed in yellow and clutched a plastic yellow trumpet.

The former British colony, then named Rhodesia, broke away from London in 1965 under white-minority rule.

After a long guerrilla war, it gained independence in 1980 and was renamed Zimbabwe.

But under its first president Robert Mugabe, who was forced out by Mnangagwa in 2017, the fledging democracy spiralled into authoritarianism and economic decline.

Almost two-thirds of Zimbabweans are under 25, according to UN figures.

But despite their country’s mineral riches and agricultural wealth, many of them struggle to find stable jobs.

The economy is mired in hyperinflation and what the World Bank describes as “unsustainable” debt levels.

Inflation reached 175.8 percent in June, and in July slowed to 101 percent, according to official figures, although some economists estimate it to be much higher.

Basic foodstuffs are unaffordable for some and there are shortages of medicines in public hospitals — a problem widely blamed on misspending and graft.

‘We don’t like to live the way we are living’: Zimbabweans hope to see change after the elections

Every morning several Zimbabwean nationals arrive in Musina, in South Africa’s northernmost province of Limpopo.

There, they buy goods to sell in their home country.

This past weekend – a mere few days from the country’s general elections, which they hope will bring about positive change – was no different.

The News24 team was in Musina and observed many Zimbabweans pack their wares outside supermarkets, liquor stores, furnishers and clothing stores.

Neatly wrapped in black plastic, the goods were loaded onto vans, minibus taxis and private vehicles.

“I don’t want to talk about the elections in Zimbabwe. We can talk about our hardship but not the elections,” said one man, who would only identify himself as Eric.

He said he feared the Zimbabwean government.

“Once they see my face [in the media], it is over for me. The police will deal with me. I am very young. I don’t want to disappear. My children need me. Let’s talk about myself. If it is about the elections, I wish to remain silent,” he said.

Two women expressed similar sentiments.

They added that they were ready to vote.

One of the women said:

We want to see change in our country. We don’t like to live the way we are living. We never thought that one day, we would be in this situation. We buy things cheaper in South Africa to sell back home. Things are costly. With R1 000, you can only buy a few grocery items. We survive by buying in bulk to sell at home. Our country is ruled by fear. We are not free at all. Poverty is pushing us here.
Another man who declined to be identified bought polony and sour milk.

He said he was eagerly waiting to cast his vote on Wednesday.

“I am ready to vote. I hope the elections will be free and fair. I want to see the youth working. Our country has a huge potential. We are the generation that can bring change. I appeal to all Zimbabweans to come home in numbers and vote for change,” he said.

He and three others went in and out of the store to buy goods because they were only allowed to buy a maximum of three items at a time.

The cold meats were loaded into trollies outside the shop.

“I am 31 years old. I want change in my country. I should be working in my country. Sadly, many of us are unemployed. We survive on buying things here to sell in Zimbabwe. We want to see a change in the leadership.”

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean government has barred some journalists from covering the elections.

Zimbabwe’s presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on 23 August and 11 candidates are vying for the presidency.

About 6.6 million people are registered to vote.

Zanu-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa, the incumbent, and the Citizen’s Coalition for Change’s (CCC), Nelson Chamisa, are the frontrunners.

Unemployment remains high and is an essential issue for young people under the age of 35. These voters make up 70% of the population, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, according to the BBC, the cost-of-living crisis continues to be a concern for voters, with high inflation and interest rates and a Zimbabwe dollar that lost 86% of its value between January and June.

We will not allow a repeat of 2018 – says Chamisa as he turns heat on ZEC, Mnangagwa

OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has cranked up pressure on Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) over the printing of ballot papers to be used in Wednesday’s general election which he says is key for a free and fair plebiscite.

The country has reached an election fever pitch with political parties ramping up their final campaigns ahead of Wednesday’s crucial vote.

However, the opposition is up in arms with the electoral body over the availing of polling station-based voters roll and the printing of ballot papers that will be used Wednesday.

Addressing multitudes of his supporters Chamisa said the failure by ZEC to avail samples of ballot papers and the voters’ roll is tantamount to being blindsided into an election.

“We have told ZEC that yakafamba kamwe haiteyewi. What you did in 2018, that rigging cannot be repeated again. I am a peace loving man. I love peace and I am going to maintain peace. Loving peace is not a weakness.

“We want to see the voters’ roll you are going to use and that voters’ roll must be authenticated so that we are not going to be surprised on the day. We want the ballot paper for the President and for the MPs to be given to us as samples so that we validate them.

“We want to know where you are printing the ballot paper so that we can have a security check. We do not want ghost ballot papers. We do not want ghost polling stations,” said Chamisa.

Chamisa also added: “I have put the whole country, the region on notice that please respect the outcome of Zimbabwe. Respect the people of Zimbabwe. When we have voted we want that vote to be respected. They have tried to bring FAZ (Forever Associates Zimbabwe).”

ZEC has been entangled in controversies in the build-up to this year’s elections, finding itself in battles with opposition.

The youthful leader accused ZEC of working in cahoots with Zanu PF creating an unlevel playing field.

This, observers, have pointed out as a recipe for another disputed election following the 2018 one that spilled into the constitutional court.

Chamisa also said that he will not rip apart the dignity of incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa should he clinch victory in the plebiscite.

“One of the gestures I am going to extend to outgoing President Mnangagwa. I will not strip you of your titles as the former head of state. Let us build the country together and advise where you can,” said Chamisa.

MALANJI RUBBISHES DEC CLAIMS OF HELICOPTER HIDING

MALANJI RUBBISHES DEC CLAIMS OF HELICOPTER HIDING

IT is nonsensical for the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) director general to claim that the second plane the commission has seized was being hidden in South Africa when its movements were being monitored, Joseph Malanji has said.

Mr Malanji, the former Foreign Affairs Minister says claiming that a plane could be hidden in South Africa was utter nonsense because it was impossible for anyone to hide a plane whose information was on radar.

In an exclusive interview with Millennium TV, Mr Malanji said the notion that his plane the DEC has seized was hidden in South Africa was senseless “because you cannot hide an aircraft. Every movement of an aircraft is through the tower. The helicopter went to South Africa for charters,” Mr Malanji said.

Mr Malanji has maintained that bringing the plane to Zambia was just wasting government’s time and resources because the helicopter was still under the care of a curator.

“The helicopter is supposed to be under the curator until the case is disposed of in South Africa. But they have decided to bring it to Zambia and when they lose their case in Pretoria, they have to send it back because both parties have got to be restored to their original status,” Mr Malanji said.

He explained that the position was that the helicopter was under a Curator and that the order used to retrieve the aircrafts was the South African one and not the Zambian courts.

“It is all abuse of authority. All being equal, the aircrafts are supposed to be with the Curator Bonis until the matter is exhausted in Pretoria. We should not be insulted just because we joined politics. We deserve some respect. People should wait until we submit to the court what we had before becoming ministers,” Mr Malanji said.

The former Kwacha Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament said people should not be putting unnecessary pressure on the judiciary.

“Let’s walk the process of justice,” Mr Malanji said.

He said government should pay more attention to fulfilling its undelivered promises instead of spending time on witch-hunting which was not helping in reducing the cost of living for citizens.

A Curator is a care taker chosen by the court pending proceedings of the court.

Hichilema Must Explain His Relationship With The Solicitor General- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA MUST EXPLAIN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SOLICITOR GENERAL

Mr Hichilema and his regime’s silence and attempts to block the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) bribery investigation into Solicitor General Mr Marshal Muchende signifies an outrageous act of blatant self-interest.

We are aware that the ACC has placed a restriction order on the property believed to belong to Mr Muchende over allegations that the Solicitor General received a sum of over US$ 500,000 as a bribe – and much more – from a named former liquidator.

We are also reliably informed about the frantic attempts from State House to get the restriction order lifted and the investigations into Mr Muchende’s alleged involvement in corruption thwarted or frustrated.

We want to address Mr Hichilema directly on this matter, which we strongly feel falls right on his feet as the appointing authority, to enable Zambians to understand and know the whole truth. And in doing so, we would like to ask the following questions:

1. Why is there panic and desperation in State House over Mr Muchende’s investigation?

2. Who is Mr Muchende to Mr Hichilema? What is their relationship?

3. What past business/political or other dealings have Mr Hichilema and Mr Muchende done together?

4. Since there is a traceable history between the two, isn’t Mr Hichilema compromised in this matter?

We raise the questions above as a way of reminding this corrupt regime, and Mr Hichilema, in particular that his continued silence on this matter is eroding the people’s trust and confidence in the country’s justice system.

Mr Hichilema must know that the Office of Solicitor General plays a critical role in shaping the country’s legal ethos and prosecutorial system and therefore, people cannot have faith and trust in the justice system when the current occupant of this office – Mr Muchende – stands accused of running a bribery scheme.

We know what is going on with Mr Muchende’s matter and we would like to reiterate our call to Mr Hichilema, and certain identifiable key advisors within the presidential advisory team, to step aside and let the ACC do its job independently by ensuring that the investigation continues as planned.

Let Mr Hichilema come out clean on his relationship with Mr Muchende and assure the country that there will be no interference in this investigation. And this has to be done urgently to save the little that is remaining of this regime.

Creating networks and schemes to protect and defend Mr Muchende will not work.

Zambians are alert and watching!

MASEBO’S MAGICAL AND AGRESSIVE TOUCH RESTORES ORDER AND DIGNITY AT MINISTRY OF HEALTH.

At a time when things are going rough and tough Hon Sylvia Masebo MP of Chongwe and Health Minister brings to the table her vast knowledge and experience that has turned out the ministry and maintained the Health narrative. Not afraid of risks and not ashamed of making mistakes Masebo faces the hash political reality in Zambia as a mother to console, rebuke and guide but also a leader she bares the responsibility of actions and says things the way they are bitter or sweeter.

From the time she was appointed she came under heavy fire and criticism on how the Ministry was doing and what the public expected and how she was handling the situation. But she remained resolute, focussed and had to face the situation head on.

Wether its on drug supplies in the hospitals, funding of health facilities and related to the ministry, Masebo faced the crisis not just as minister but a citizen who is also affected by the situation and she never sugarcoated anything but said had choices have to be made, revolting officers where met with the guidance they lacked, drug supply is a thing of the past. In her words “we can’t get everything done today but it does not mean we are not doing anything at all”.

Todate Masebo remains a darling and a celebrity Minister in her ministry due to her charismatic and motherly approach many people find comfort and helpful to interruct with her. She calls a spade a spade no matter how uncomfortable the situation is, she is quick to apologise without shying away and taking responsibility for her actions in the interest of good intentions and national duty on behalf of government and the Republican president. She is a proud cadre leading among profesionals more educated and experienced than her in the ministry she presides but she tells them Yes am a cadre but am your minister lets work together and tell me things as they are so that I tell the president no matter how unpleasant they are”. She stands out to be the Masebo of her own make and leader of her own make in her own way as she is known “THE IRON LADY” one among the few successful politicians who has served literlly in all governments that have ruled Zambia.

Masebo presents the political story of untold success defined on principal and governance as a political public servant of cunning political calculations to read situations and scenarios.

Undoubtedly she is one among the best performing Ministers of New Dawn Administration. The Republican president Mr Hakainde Hichilema described her as a “Marshal woman” the fearless Soldier who gets things done. The ackolades from the prssident mints the notion that she was appointed there due to the sensitivity nature of the ministry and how someone like her was needed there to restore order and dignity and thats exactly what Ministry of Health has right now under Hon Sylvia Masebo.

House Of Chiefs Condemns Harassment Of Former President Edgar Lungu By Suspected UPND Cadres During Malaila Traditional Ceremony

0

HOUSE OF CHIEFS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE LACK OF RESPECT FOR TRADITIONAL LEADERS BY UPND CADRES IN MAMBWE/MFUWE DISTRICT EASTERN PROVINCE YESTERDAY.

THE HOUSE OF CHIEFS has expressed disappointment with the lack of respect for traditional leaders exhibited by UPND cadres at yesterday’s Malaila traditional Ceremony in Mambwe District Eastern Province.

In a statement, Chairperson Chief Chisunka says he is deeply saddened by the recent events at the Malaila Ceremony, of the Kunda Speaking people of Mfuwe, particularly the unruly behavior and
harassment directed towards former President Dr.
Edgar Lungu.

Chief Chisunka emphasizes that traditional leaders are non-partisan, and traditional ceremonies are not political gatherings but rather celebrations and preservation of our history and culture.

“Our traditional Ceremonies are open for all to attend, regardless of their political affiliations because they symbolize our unity as a people beyond any political divisions.

Regardless of one’s political identity, first and foremost we belong to a family, a clan, a tribe, and a nation. It is for this reason that we extend invitations to all, fostering an environment where our diverse history and cultural heritage can be appreciated and shared.

The unfortunate incident that transpired at the Malaila ceremony reflects a lack of respect for our
elders and the values we cherish as traditional leaders. This behavior does not only disrespect HRH Senior Chief Nsefu, the host of the ceremony, but it disrespects all traditional leadership as well as our heritage and traditions I firmly urge party leaders to play their part in educating their cadres about the dangers of such behavior.

The harmony of our nation, which stands as a beacon of peace within our region and the
continent, should not be destroyed by unruly actions of few individuals. As a representative of all Chiefs in our nation As Chairperson of the House of Chiefs, I was greatly disappointed to witness such disorder within our own tent.

Let us remember the values of respect, unity and dignity that our ancestors imparted in us.
encourage all individuals to reflect upon their actions and give respect to our culture and traditions Only through mutual respect and understanding can we continue to build a strong, peaceful, and united nation .” He said

ECL SHOULD AVOID CAUSING CONFUSION IN THE COUNTRY BY USE OF HIS PRESENCE ANYWHERE …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

It is un becoming because ECL as a former head of state is supposed to be on the side of govt and not in politics , these tours ECL is doing including the markets have a lead to his next desires after serving this country as a former president . It is very clear ECL is inconcilable with the UPND govt , and this will cause confusion and a stand off in the country if not carefully addresses , when a former president tours he is under govt and not with political party reasons .

It is very important that ECL accepts to recieve guidance from govt than taking things for granted that he has all the rights as former president to do anything he wants anywhere in the country , this is not helpful for a a former president because protocols still exist in order to have a securable environment for him and follow the conduct with other govt officials , but in my view ECL is moving like a political contender , he should not forget that he made more enemies than friends during his reigns.

We have seen the advances ECL has been doing , let him just declare what his intentions are , all will be well because he will be with the PF party in all his dealings away from govt , testing zambians whether he is still popular in these public gatherings like ceremonies and markets has a danger on his life and a risk for anarchy and disorder in the country , testing waters has a positive or negative consiquency , therefore ECL must accept both .

If ECL still feels he has the capacity to erase the barbaric history in the minds of zambians , let’s see him come up more open and genuine politically so that his movements are not observed as a former president but an opponent in the future elections . Someone should provide counsel to ECL we need him to be safe as a former president , these risks he is undertaking are very unnecessary if they are meant to psychologically tempt the people to think he is still available for politics and contest . God bless mother Zambia .

There Is A Danger Of Life And Death When The Former President Starts To Scheme His Come Back When There Is A Sitting President He Has A Stalemate With

0

THERE IS A DANGER OF LIFE AND DEATH WHEN THE FORMER PRESIDENT STARTS TO SCHEME HIS COME BACK WHEN THERE IS A SITTING PRESIDENT HE HAS A STALEMATE WITH …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

In this country we like taking things very easy until we see a burst and start pointing fingers , as much as we have to ignore and forget the past and move on ,we need to reflect on the past AGGRESSION which did not work to consolidate power until change was made , it is very clear no one has come to terms and accept the reality of things , they still think all options are possible , that is why we need to secure the presidency more than ever before . We have seen the fight against corruption under the new dawn govt which has not spared the former first family members that are being investigated on many issues to do with properties suspected of being proceeds of crimes . Some followers to ECL think talking about his name is fear for his come back , when it is about the peace and security risk which can emerge if things are not going to be properly managed .

We all recall what happened in 1994/5 when DR KK mhscriep was in kabwe trying his political come back against FTJ mhscriep , it is not just in Zambia , we have seen many countries experiencing a Political vegeance that has taken away peace and stability in many countries , am not referring that such a thing should ever happen in Zambia , am trying to highlight the nation that peace is a preserve of the mind , if people choose to loose it they can easily do so if things are left unchecked . There are serious implications in our political sphere in this country today which need particular reasons to be concerned of . I don’t want to talk about president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA and his journey to the presidency , am recoginisent of his humility and remorse to forgive and move the country in a more dignified manner , whether people warned of more serious punishment on him if they continued with leadership of this country .

The political stand off of ECL as former president and the UPND govt has a lot of emotional attachments , and that is the reason we are seeing him with a misconceiving character and personality different of what we expect of him , some followers to ECL may have forgotten the permanent wounds they did on many zambians that heed to president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s word of getting to forgive and move in peace and harmony . It is possible that these blind movements by ECL in public places can have a serious recause on him by UPND members who lost everything including lives of people . There are two catigories of personality here , in my view zambians especially followers of ECL , the guidelines of a former president in the country are in line with govt order and discipline , outside that means someone is in politics or there is something else he or she is testing before he can use his right to announce the intentions .

People have started ignoring the calls for reconciliation because of the prevailing situations , how is the country going to heal if someone wants to fight again politically ?, someone still wants to fight politically using a way that publicly risks his life . The dangers are that if a former president is using conspiracy theories to get back , and because of his influence and know how of the presidency in the country , the incumbent is at risk of his life in terms of security and exposure , if anything happens to the republican president ECL will announce his come back in less than ten seconds from what he is doing , am not saying ECL has that intention to put off the president , am trying to highlight what politics can do in most times because it becomes a dirty game when people make it dirty . The same danger is applicable to ECL because the state can make him vulnerable to any attacks because of his involvement in secrete political terms .

It is undeniable that ECL wants to defend his family and friends from loosing properties they richly hold them together in the party and on relative terms . When we say confusion is likely to happen it is because as a former president one is a govt trophy but raising the fix in public and getting everywhere on political terms and not under govt responsibility to support national programs officially , it raises these questions because it is now very clear ECL can not work as former president with the UPND govt and as such he is still a partisan political engineer .

It is very important to understand that president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is a democrat and has nothing in his mind to haunt ECL , but politics as it is has its forms which are inevitable because govt machinery has instituitions which are not mocked by anyone , and the president needs to be protected by any possible ways . The democracy that president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has brought which must be enjoyed by all citizens including ECL in all conditions , could have a cost to pay by ECL because he made more enemies than friends , his democratic right to move like a free mole can easily come at a cost if not carefully managed by himself or the state .

The need for ECL and the current republican president in my view are on a serious invisible stalemate , we need both lives but we must carefully see through the light of days in order to have a better judgement of what is tolerable from what not . What is happening in the country in my view is a serious life and death situation which needs attention , it may not look like so but it is precarious , ECL is on the side of people that are mafias , cruel , and cartels ,these are groups that are seriously under the UPND govt scrutiny and they hate president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA with passion . There can only be one key person to this equation that is hated to all this by ECL and all his followers , that it is president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA just to state the point . God bless mother Zambia .

Chingola clergyman urges prayers for HH

Chingola clergyman urges prayers for HH

By Oliver Chisenga

A CHINGOLA based clergyman has urged Zambians to take a few moments each day to pray for President Hakainde Hichilema and his government.

Bishop Ellison Bwalya of Life Giving World Christian Ministries said Christians are called to pray for those in authority.

“Whether you agree with or like the President or not, God commands us to honour the position with prayer and respect. The prayers below can be prayed over the President on President’s Day or any day of the year as we seek God’s guidance for our nation. Take a few moments today to bring our nation’s leader before the God of the universe,” Bishop Bwalya said in a statement titled: A Prayer for the President. “Lord, no matter who is leading our country as President, we offer our prayers on behalf of his or her position. Draw him into a strong relationship with You. Thank You for this one who has pledged his life in service to our country. Give our President a true servant spirit, one who is a person after Your own heart. Anoint him with the Holy Spirit’s power, that he might feel Your strength in every situation. Let integrity and honesty guide every decision as He first looks to You for divine help.”

Bishop Bwalya prayed that God rendered help to the President’s life, his family, and to the people he serves.

He also asked God to make President Hichilema a leader in every respect, morally and spiritually strong.

“A Prayer of Protection for the President: Guard our President against unfair criticism and unfounded accusations. When he stumbles, give him the courage to admit his mistakes. Strengthen his character, guard him against hurtful compromise, and give him a listening ear for the people he serves,’’ Bishop Bwalya continued. ‘’In danger, surround him and our country with Your angels’ protection. From the time he begins in office until his time is complete, may the President serve You and our country as a true leader with an undying love, an unswerving faith, and an unending hope in the only One Who can make our country great. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Bishop Bwalya also prayed for President Hichilema’s humility and accountability.

‘’When others tempt our President to embrace arrogant power rather than humble service, give him an undivided heart. Help the President to stand firm, knowing that You will fight his battles with him. May He begin His day with You and Your Word, with gratitude and praise for the honour You have given to him,’’ Bishop Bwalya prayed further. ‘’Throughout the day may Your Spirit remind him of his purpose and of Your love for him. And when the night arrives, calm his heart with the peace that passes all understanding as he purposes to keep trusting and obeying You, no matter what the cost.”

He added that as God surrounds President Hichilema with godly counsellors, He should give him accountability to them and all Zambians.

“Bless [the President] with joy when righteousness and goodness prevail. But give him a heart that weeps for the injustices and sorrows around him.

Ezekiel 22:30… We are to be those who stand in the gap, who lift up our nation and President with all it favours and faults before the throne of God, and pray that He continues to work in our midst,’’ prayed Bishop Bwalya. ‘’Here are several Scriptures that we can pray over our President as we seek God’s guidance and counsel for our leader: Psalm 2:10-11 – ‘Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate His rule with trembling’. Proverbs 11:14 – ‘For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers’. Proverbs 21:1 – ‘The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He will’. Job 12:23-25 – ‘He makes nations great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and disperses them’, Proverbs 2:1-8.”

Russia moves to fill void left by France in West Africa

0

The verdict of Western observers on the outcome of July Russia-Africa Summit is that it was a failure, largely because of the smaller-than-expected number of heads of state in attendance.

But, according to Moscow, the conference rekindled the progress it had been making to strengthen relations with the African continent.

“We highly value the results of our joint work at the Summit. I am sure the achieved results are creating a good foundation for further deepening the Russia-Africa partnership in the interest of our nations’ prosperity and wellbeing,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a post-Summit speech.

One of the regions Russia has targeted is the Sahel, where it has promised to re-establish some of the diplomatic missions that had not been opened in 30 years during the era of the Soviet Union.

Seventeen heads of state attended the summit, down from 45 leaders who attended the maiden 2019 edition.

The significance of the low turnout of heads of state, however, wasn’t lost on the Russians themselves. The Kremlin blamed it on “sabotage” by the West, singling out the US and France for pressuring African leaders to boycott the summit. Notable attendees, however, were the presidents of Egypt, South Africa and Senegal.

“Virtually all African states have been subjected to unprecedented pressure from the US, and French embassies on the ground have not been sleeping either, along with other Western missions who are also trying to do their bit to prevent this summit from taking place,” Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian Presidency, told reporters.

The countries where these proposed embassies are located have not been named but discussions are underway. Russia is currently present in 37 countries on the continent, with 34 embassies.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Moscow intends to open embassies in some new countries and increase its staff in some others where they already exist.

“Given that Russia is increasingly focused on Africa, President Vladimir Putin has set the task of building up Russia’s diplomatic presence in the continent, which implies opening new offices or increasing the staff at the existing foreign missions. The plan is to ensure Russia is represented to the maximum degree in Africa. I don’t want to jump the gun: we will certainly tell you when and where Russian embassies will start operating as soon as relevant agreements are reached and final decisions taken,” she said this week in a press briefing.

Two countries, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea – are already confirmed to reopen Russian embassies in their capitals. These were among several African countries where the Soviet Union shut its embassies in the 1990s as it collapsed, and its republics splintered.

The other countries include Niger, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sao Tome and Principe.

Sierra Leone reopened its embassy in Moscow in 2009, after shutting it down in 1999, and it has been lobbying to have the Russians reciprocate since then. In 2021, Sierra Leone’s parliament ratified an agreement cancelling visa requirement for diplomatic passport holders visiting either country.

Prior to the Africa summit, Russia hosted the Army 2023 International Military Technical Forum, one of the world’s largest events showcasing innovations and modern military products. President Putin used the event to offer Russia’s military technologies to expand its ties with foreign countries.

“Russia is open to deepening its technological partnerships and military-technical cooperation with other countries on equal terms, and to working with all those seeking to assert their national interests and independent development path, all countries that believe that working together to build an equal and indivisible security framework is essential as a reliable safeguard for every state,” he said.

Putin pledged to send grain to six African nations — Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, the Central African Republic, and Eritrea. He also announced a debt relief of $684 million for the continent. These are also countries that have either had coups or are generally unstable.

The Russian leader also sought to exploit the rising Pan-African anti-colonial sentiments brewing in Africa, quoting icons like Nelson Mandela and citing the legacies of Egypt’s former president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the assassinated Congolese independence leader Patrice Lumumba.

Part of Moscow’s larger strategy in this new offensive in its war with the West in Africa is to take over where its rivals are kicked out after military takeover. This has been seen in Mali and Burkina Faso.

During last week’s pro-coup protests in Niger, the world saw a repeat of what happened in both countries — protesters waving Russian flags and chanting support for Russia.

This week, President Putin discussed the situation in Niger with Mali’s Transition President Assimi Goita, a fervent supporter of Russia-Africa ties.

During the telephone conversation, Goita initiated, Putin expressed opposition to a plan by the West African bloc to intervene militarily to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger. That move is significant given concerns about the likelihood of the involvement of the Russia-backed Wagner mercenary group in the brewing Niger conflict.

The Wagner Group is one of the key tools Russia has been using to expand its empire in Africa, as was seen in Mali and Central African Republic. The group has been accused of committing human rights abuses where it operates.

Burkina Faso hasn’t received the Wagners yet, at least not officially. But its leader, Ibrahim Traore, has repeatedly spoken highly of Russian ties with his country. The 35-year-old army captain, who came to power in October last year, was the star at the Russia-African Summit, where he linked beggarly African leaders to continued Western neocolonialism. He wore military fatigues.

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo during a visit in Washington, as part of the US-Africa Summit in December 2022, claimed Traore had offered a mine to the Wagners in exchange for the group’s deployment to fight against militias within its borders.

Just three weeks in power, there have been reports that the Niger junta has also requested support from the group.

And Wagner’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is reported to have called on the Niger junta to call upon his troops if they needed help. “We are always on the side of the good, on the side of justice, and on the side of those who fight for their sovereignty and for the rights of their people,” he said in a message shared on Telegram.

Whether the Russians are in Niger or not, that it is yet to be ascertained. But the possibility of it happening in the open is in the horizon, especially after military chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) to which Niger belongs, agreed to contribute troops to a standby force to intervene. The subregional bloc has vowed to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum, still in detention since the coup on July 26.

Security analysts say any such intervention could further destabilise the Sahel region, where conflicts waged by groups linked to Al Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) have displaced millions of people over the past decade and fuelled a major humanitarian crisis. US troops have been supporting their Nigerien counterparts against the insurgents.

Last week, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland travelled to Niamey and held talks she described as “difficult” with the coup leaders.

She was refused a meeting with either the deposed president or the junta leader, Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani.

While ruling out any involvement of Russia or the Wagner in the Niger coup, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this week that the Russian mercenary group had taken advantage of the crisis to assert its influence in the region.

Curiously, the US is yet to declare the Military’s move in Niger as a coup, just terming it an illegal power takeover.

Security analyst dismisses ECOWAS readiness for military action in Niger

0

International security analyst, Dr. Prosper Nii Nortey Addo has stated it might take a long while to put together any force to undertake a military intervention in Niger.

The ECOWAS commissioner for Political Affairs Peace and Security Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah has indicated that though the Commission will not issue timelines, plans are fully afoot to deploy a standing force to wrestle power from the military junta in Niger.

“The Chiefs of Defense Staff are just putting finishing touches to their operational plans to get our troops ready. This is just a pledging meeting because the concept of operation is already ready. We have factored in potential obstacles and how to overcome them,” Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah told journalists in a meeting of West African Security Chiefs.

“This meeting is just to refine what we have while preparing for possible intervention,” Amb. The Chiefs of Defense Staff are all ready and putting final touches to their operational plans to get our troops ready because the concept of operation is already ready,” he added.

Speaking to Julius Caesar Anadem on Ultimate 106.9 FM; Security Analyst Dr Prosper Nii Nortey Addo pointed out however that it will take the Commission at least one month EVEN IF ECOWAS has all the financial and material resources sufficiently available.

He explained, “The use of force requires that there would be an approval from the ECOWAS heads of state based on the recommendations of their Chiefs of Defense Staff; they have to deploy troops on the ground. That will take like a month to be able to do that and that is if they do have the wherewithal to go down that road.”

He however added that the window for preparation provided the ECOWAS a further opportunity to push for diplomatic intervention to restore constitutional rule to Niger,

“Particularly in international relations, diplomacy and security, it is always a last resort. Intension has been declared but it does not mean that ECOWAS can go in one week,” he opined.

The South Sudan based Security Analyst who has worked with the United Nations and other major Regional Blocks on conflicts, extremism, peace and security further charged ECOWAS to avert its minds to the undercurrents of poverty, terrorism and bad governance creating room for such military takeovers.

Chakwera and Chilima – Do They Deserve Another Term To Rule Malawi?

“Leadership, both as a research area and as a practical skill, encompasses the ability of an individual, group, or organization to “lead”, influence, or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. “Leadership” is a contested term.” – Wikipedia

Malawi is a country that is on the verge of collapse, facing many economic challenges ranging from huge debts, poor leadership, and expenditure while the leaders are well qualified and we offered them a good package.

On the contrary, they will soon finish making this nation poor by doing literally nothing but implementing bad policies for the country.

My question today is does the President and his Vice really deserve another tell of office with all that they are doing to the economy of Malawi?

The President is both the head of state and head of government of Malawi, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. Under the Constitution, the President is responsible for the execution and enforcement of the laws created by Parliament.

According to a well-known study of presidential character, some common leadership qualities that successful presidents appear to have in common are the following: A strong vision for the country’s future. An ability to put their own times in the perspective of history. Effective communication skills. It appears to me the present leadership does not possess any of the above attributes.

Now, my argument is, how do we rate President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice President Saulos Chilima? They brought so much hope to the people of this country but they have dismally failed and brought a lot of pain instead, to the people of this nation. All they are asking from Malawians now is that we pray for them so they may rule this country well. I thought they had a manifesto of their own and they challenged that they would perform much better than the previous government. Can we consider them to be among the highest-rated leaders in Malawian history today? These people are simply time wasters indeed, they have nothing to offer to this nation.

Of course, the leadership qualities of great leaders must include Strategic thinking. Delegation. Communication. Integrity. Empathy. Flexibility. Enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I don’t see any of these qualities in the current leadership.

Results of the research indicate that great presidents, besides being stubborn and disagreeable, are more extroverted, open to experience, assertive, achievement striving, excitement seeking and more open to fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas, and values.

Unfortunately, we cannot see any of these above attributes in the current administration. If the 2020 election was to be compared with some kind of business, then I would say Malawians were scammed. They have been scammed from having three meals a day to only one meal and sometimes none at all, from expensive fuel to no fuel at all, from an affordable lifestyle to a very difficult struggling life.

In conclusion, from the lack of maize in ADMARC depots, drugs in hospitals, foreign exchange, and security challenges, we can perhaps call this a church government busy preaching, speaking in tongues, and traveling from one destination to another with no plan for action.

Surely, this is the worst of all governments that have existed in the history of Malawi. We do not need these failures anymore now!- maravipost

Reverend Lazarus Chakwera’s effect on Malawi: No fuel, no security, zero leadership

By Sellina Kainja

Days have turned into months and months are turning into almost a year since Malawians started spending long hours at fuel stations in search of petrol and diesel, the two commodities that have become so scarce in Malawi, slowing down the economy and in many cases, to a complete halt.

When this crisis started, there a lot of deniers, especially those who see everything with a political lens, were quick to point fingers at their adversaries for lying and blowing things out of proportion, they said.

Malawians then were told that the fuel shortage in some parts of the country was sporadic cases and not enough to cause panic—they lied then that the country had plenty of fuel in its fuel reserves and went ahead to blame everyone else but themselves for the long queues.

However, as nights turned into days, it has become more difficult for deniers, political apologists, and spinners. They have been left speechless—most of them when you meet them at these long fuel queues, they pretend to be ok, but you can tell they are affected, too.

The fuel crisis has bred insecurity and lawlessness. Vendors have found a lucrative business in all this fuel chaos—they fill up their jerricans with fuel which they later sell on the black market at double the pump price. While gas stations run dry, Malawians are forced to buy fuel on the black market while government and our leaders snore.

This country risks being run by illegal fuel vendors if the government does not rein in the illegal fuel markets which are slowly being normalised because the government fails to find a lasting solution to the fuel woes.

Not only that, people are being attacked as they wait for fuel in these long and snaking queues. Just a few days ago, social media was awash with reports of how people have lost their valuables to thieves who attacked them as they waited for fuel.

All this is because this country is void of leadership. Those entrusted with the responsibility to provide answers and solutions are so cosied up that they pay no attention to the welfare of the people.

One wonders what they think as they drive past long fuel queues in fuel-guzzling vehicles.

Malawians have been told several times that one of the reasons there is a fuel shortage is because the country’s forex reserves are wanting.

But then, Malawians every day see their leaders travel abroad with a larger-than-life entourage, spending the little forex with reckless abandon.

Almost every day, leaders are traveling domestically to attend events as trivial as opening a new toilet. Chaos and lawlessness often thrive where there is no leadership. Let our leaders show up and fix these problems.

Egyptian opposition figure Ahmed Douma freed after presidential pardon

0

Prominent Egyptian activist Ahmed Douma walked out of the Badr prison complex outside Cairo, a free man on Saturday (Aug. 19).

He was pardoned along with four other prisoners, according to a presidential decree. The pardons, dated Saturday (Aug. 19), were published in Egypt’s Official Gazette.

Douma was serving a 15-year sentence after being convicted of taking part in clashes between protesters and security forces in the Egyptian capital in December 2011.

The nearly weeklong clashes that left some 40 people dead erupted after mostly young activists took to the streets to protest the post-Mubarak political transition overseen by the military. The riot involved a fire that gutted parts of a library housing rare manuscripts and books. Other government buildings, including the parliament, were damaged during the protests.

The clashes brought international attention when riot police were filmed beating, stripping and kicking female demonstrators in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 2011 uprising.

Activists received the news of Douma’s freedom with jubilation on social media, and called for the release of other jailed pro-democracy activists.

“Douma has not set foot out of prison since 2013 … my heart will burst,” Mona Seif, the sister of jailed activist Alaa Abdel-Fatthah, wrote on Facebook.

Douma, 37, was first sentenced in 2015 to life in prison along with 229 other defendants who were all tried in absentia. Douma appealed and Egypt’s highest appeals court ordered his retrial, ultimately leading to the 15-year sentence and a fine of 6 million Egyptian pounds, about $195,000.

He was one of the faces of the 2011 pro-democracy protests that swept the Arab world’s most populous country and ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. He was also a fierce critic of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who was overthrown in 2013 amid mass protests against his one-year divisive rule.

Before Douma, Patrick Zaki and lawyer Mohamed al-Baqer had been freed. Al-Baqer’s client, Alaa Abdel Fattah remains Egypt’s most notorious political prisoner.

Bleak human rights record
For years, many politicians and public figures called on President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to pardon Douma, as part of mounting calls to end a yearslong crackdown on dissent. Egyptian authorities have in recent months released hundreds of activists after its human rights record came under international scrutiny when it hosted the U.N. climate change summit in November.

Ziad el-Elaimi, who was freed shortly before Egypt hosted COP27, welcome Douma’s gained freedom after “9 and half years of his life had been stolen.”

Hower, el-Elaimi said the issue of human rights in Egypt remains “unresolved”: ‘someone is using free men as hostages” and “people are still afraid to express their opinions freely”.

Egypt, a close U.S. ally, has waged a wide-scale crackdown on dissent over the past decade, jailing thousands of people. Most of those imprisoned are supporters of Morsi, the Islamist president, but the crackdown has also swept up prominent secular activists.

In recent months el-Sissi’s government has allowed some criticism of its policies amid a daunting economic crisis and growing calls for a political reform ahead of the 2014 presidential elections.

‘Emptying the ocean with a spoon’
Ahmed Douma’s presidential pardon is a “very good news” to Hossam Baghat, the founder of the Egyptian Initiative for Individuals rights, since he was one of “the regime’s most hated militants.”

But, he adds, as a charge: “the regime is trying to empty the ocean with a spoon” with “random choices with no transparency or explanation as to why some go out and others are ignored”.

Since January, activists have numbered the death of 24 prisoners, six of whom were detained in new “rehabilitation centers” built to replace the country’s dozens of dilapidated prisons. The rehabilitation centers include libraries and workshops.

The loosening of the government’s zero-tolerance policy began following the president’s call for a national dialogue in April last year with the aim of crafting recommendations for the country’s future.

El-Sissi said Wednesday (Aug. 09) he received a set of political, economic and social proposals from the dialogue which will be studied and implemented according to his legal power. Other proposals, he said on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, would be referred to parliament for deliberations.

The proposals, obtained by The Associated Press, include reforming election laws and improving human rights, such as the creation of an anti-discrimination commission. They also include other recommendations on education, economy, and tourism.

The country will host presidential elections next year.

Zimbabwe blocks VOA journalists from covering elections

Zimbabwean authorities have barred Voice Of America (VOA) journalists from covering Wednesday’s general election in yet another incident involving purging of foreign media viewed unfriendly to the Zanu PF led administration.

The VOA crew had planned to fly into the country from the broadcaster’s Washington base ahead of the poll.

In a weekend statement, acting VOA Director Yolanda López confirmed journalists from the broadcaster were denied permission to cover Zimbabwe’s poll.

López said she was “troubled” by the reception given to the broadcaster by Zimbabwean authorities.

“We are deeply troubled to learn that many of our international journalist colleagues were denied clearance to travel to Zimbabwe prior to Wednesday’s national elections.

“Without factual and candid coverage of all candidates and issues from all perspectives, the Zimbabwe electorate will be denied access to critical news and information essential to voters as they head to the polls.

“VOA appeals to all officials to ensure open access to all media seeking to cover the Zimbabwe elections,” she said.

US Bureau of African affairs expressed disappointment that the pattern of sanctions imposed on media also affected several more from other media international houses.

“Disappointed Zimbabwe denying accreditation requests to cover elections from multiple international journalists.

“The game is clear: for those who applied on time, rejection came very late and appeals not accepted; alternates don’t meet the deadline of applying 60 days in advance,” read the statement.

VOA, better known as Studio 7, provides news coverage for Zimbabwe in three languages; English, Shona, and Ndebele.

Its programming airs via medium wave at 909 kHz and shortwave frequencies 4930, 13755 and 15775 kHz from 1700 to 1800 daily (Zimbabwean time), as well as from 0400 to 0500 and 1800 to 1830 Monday through Friday.

The ban on VOA journalists from covering Zimbabwean elections follows similar sanctions placed on former SABC broadcaster Chris Maroleng and his three colleagues who were all deported back to South Africa with Zimbabwean authorities claiming they falsified their real visit to the country.

Maroleng is now Global Advisor and SADC Executive Director of Good Governance Africa.

ECOWAS Defence Chiefs set date For Military Intervention In Niger Republic

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has agreed on an undisclosed date for possible military intervention in Niger.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, made an announcement at the end of the meeting of West African army chiefs in Accra on Friday, August 18 where they have been coordinating a possible armed intervention aimed at reversing the coup in Niger if diplomatic options fail.

He said, “We’ve already agreed and fine tuned what will be required for the intervention.

“All member states of ECOWAS present here today have all committed elements, they have committed their own equipment, they have committed their own resources to undertake this mission, so I tell you we are ready to go anytime the order is given.”

According to the bloc, most of its 15 member states are willing to contribute to the joint force, with the exception of countries under military rule – Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea – and Cape Verde.

“The D-day is also decided,” Musah added.

He stated that while “all options are on the table” including mediation and sanctions, ECOWAS will not hold an “endless dialogue” and insists on restoring constitutional order in Niger.

“We want to get back to constitutional normalcy, and the decision is that the coup in Niger is one coup too many for the region, and we are putting a stop to it at this time, and we are drawing the line in the sand.”

Also, the United Nations (UN) has urged Niger’s military authorities to promptly restore constitutional order.

In a statement issued, Spokeswoman for UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, said, “The people have already been through so much hardship over the years, now, the very people they elected to build a pathway to end their destitution have been removed by force against the constitutional order and detained by the coup leaders. They must be released at once and democracy restored.”

On July 30, ECOWAS issued Niger’s military authorities a one-week deadline to reinstall Bazoum or face the threat of force, but the period passed without action.

Nelson Chamisa’s CCC Expects Election Results By 24 August After Deploying Agents To All Polling Stations

Nelson Chamisa’s CCC Expects Election Results By 24 August After Deploying Agents To All Polling Stations

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has once again risked confrontation with authorities by declaring that he will announce the results of the August 23 elections, regardless of the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Chamisa made this bold statement during a rally in Bulawayo, where he claimed that his party had deployed agents to all polling stations and would have the means to tabulate the results.

During a gathering at the White City Sports Stadium in Bulawayo on Sunday, he assured his party supporters that their agents had been strategically placed at all 12,374 polling stations.

With unwavering confidence, he boldly declared that the party would possess the election results by August 24th.

Watch the video below.

Premature Election Result Announcements Face Severe Consequences: ZEC Issues Dire Warning

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has issued a strong warning regarding the premature disclosure of election results. Emphasizing the gravity of the matter, the ZEC firmly states that it is strictly prohibited for any individual or organization, apart from the commission itself, to reveal or disseminate the election results.

In a statement, ZEC said,

Presidential Election results will be announced within five (5) days after the polling day at the ZEC National Collation Centre
It is illegal to announce election results verbally or in print before they are announced by ZEC. Violators of this electoral offence will face legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, or both.

History of Election Result Disputes

This is not the first time that Chamisa has challenged the authority of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) over election results. In the 2018 presidential election, Chamisa contested the narrow victory of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, alleging that the election was rigged.

However, it was later revealed that Chamisa did not have polling agents at all polling stations, despite earlier claims.

Mexican Man Cheats Death After Being Shot Twice in the Head as Bullets Bounce off his ‘Thick’ Skull

Miraculous Escape: Bullets Bounce Off ‘Hard-Headed’ Man’s Skull!
In a shocking incident that defies belief, a Mexican man identified as Francisco narrowly escaped death after being shot in the head not once, but twice, only to have the bullets miraculously ricochet off his skull. This extraordinary event unfolded on August 2nd as Francisco was innocently strolling through the streets of the Gustavo A. Madero neighbourhood in Mexico City.

The Attack:
The assailant, identified as Carlos N., approached Francisco and fired two close-range shots at his head without warning. The motives behind this brutal attack are still unknown, leaving the authorities puzzled. However, what has captivated the attention of the public and media alike is the astonishing outcome of the gunshots.

A Stroke of Luck:
Rather than penetrating Francisco’s skull and causing fatal injuries, the bullets bounced harmlessly off his head. It’s a phenomenon that defies rational explanation but can only be described as a miraculous combination of factors. According to sources, the bullets used by the assailant were old and the gunpowder damp, significantly reducing their velocity and piercing power. Additionally, the gun itself was of a small caliber with a short barrel, further diminishing the impact.

Escape and Capture:
Despite the incredible turn of events, Francisco sustained only minor flesh wounds. His resilience and quick thinking allowed him to alert nearby security guards, who swiftly apprehended the assailants. As investigations continue, the motive behind this audacious attack remains shrouded in mystery.

A Reminder of Fortune:
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the extraordinary resilience of the human body. Francisco’s survival against all odds is nothing short of a miracle. While the reasons for the attack may remain a mystery for now, he can consider himself incredibly fortunate to have escaped with minor injuries.

The story of Francisco’s harrowing encounter will undoubtedly captivate the public’s imagination, prompting reflection on the fragility of life and the astonishing capacity of the human body to endure. It stands as a testament to the inexplicable twists of fate and the profound will to survive.

Niger’s coup leader plans transitional government for up to 3 years

0

Niger’s de facto president, Abdourahamane Tchiani, wants to create a transitional government that would remain in power for “no longer than three years,” he said on state television, while warning against intervention from abroad.

Before that, he wants to hold a “comprehensive national dialogue” within 30 days and consult all Nigeriens, Tchiani said on Saturday evening.

Tchiani became Niger’s leader last month in a shock coup, when the presidential guard detained the president and seize power.

The national dialogue would provide the basis to create a new constitution, Tchiani said, underscoring that the decisions would be made “without outside interference.”

His comments came after the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) said its defence chiefs were drafting a plan to intervene if constitutional order is not restored.

A potential date for an intervention had been set, but was not mentioned publicly, the group said.

Niger’s new leaders responded by saying they had developed a defence strategy with “concrete measures” together with Mali and Burkina Faso if ECOWAS decides to “go to war.”

Mali and Burkina Faso are also ruled by the military following coups.

Following Niger’s coup on July 26, ECOWAS called for the reinstatement of the constitution and of Bazoum, who is under house arrest.

However, ECOWAS stressed that a peaceful solution should remain a priority and that military intervention would only be necessary if this failed.

Pope Francis also said on Sunday that he hopes for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Niger.

“I join the bishops’ appeal for peace in the country and stability in the Sahel region,” the Catholic Church leader said in St Peter’s Square in Rome after the Angelus prayer.

The Argentinean said he was following the events in Niger with concern. “In prayer, I accompany the efforts of the international community to find a peaceful solution as soon as possible for the good of all.”

Niger, a Sahel state with around 26 million inhabitants, is one of the poorest populations in the world. Up until the coup, it was one of the last democratic partners of the United States and Europe in the Sahel region on the southern edge of the Sahara.

Not free or fair? We don’t care- Mnangagwa

THE SEEMINGLY angry President Emmerson Mnangagwa says he does not care if the Wednesday elections are deemed not free and fair by Western countries.

Mnangagwa’s utterances come as the polls are increasingly failing the credibility test in the wake of a litany of intimidation, violence and “dirty” tactics allegations levelled against the ruling Zanu PF party.

Speaking during a rally in Shurugwi on Saturday, Mnangagwa said no one had the right to ask if the elections were free and fair.

“No one should come and tell us, ‘Are your elections free, fair and transparent?’ Nonsense!” Mnangagwa said.

Mnangagwa said no country should teach Zimbabwe about democracy.

“I want to make this clear; no one is qualified to teach us democracy. We were never given our democracy on a silver platter, we spent 16 solid years of an armed struggle for us to become independent.

“No one should assume any role to teach us democracy, we fought for it. We acquired it ourselves. It’s us who have the right to talk about democracy because we fought for it; we have the right to talk about independence because we fought for it, and about sovereignty because we fought for it,” Mnangagwa said.

“This was our main goal, many of our brothers and sisters perished for it. It is us who want free and fair elections, we are not doing this to please anybody, and we want it ourselves.”

Mnangagwa invited observers from the United States and the European Union, but they have been treated with suspicion in government corridors since their arrival.

On Friday, Information secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana released a statement after a government-controlled daily paper wrote a story alleging that European Union election observers had bribed journalists in the Midlands province.

“His Excellency was clear that an invitation to observe was not an invitation to interfere and no foreign power is a stakeholder in Zimbabwe’s electoral processes. The government will not hesitate to take stern action against any foreign observers who have chosen to break convention and dabble in the election processes of our country. For the particular transgression raised in this statement, the government will take appropriate action,” Mangwana said.

However, the European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) dismissed media reports that it was funding local journalists to discredit the August 23 elections, saying it was a fabrication.

In a statement, EU EOM Chief Observer Fabio Massimo Castaldo said the report was “defamatory” as the allegations were “unfounded”.

Egyptian security forces arrest journalist after report on officials aboard seized plane in Zambia

0

Egyptian security forces detained a local journalist who had covered a breaking news story allegedly involving five Egyptian officials aboard a private plane seized by Zambian authorities earlier this week.

Forces arrested Karim Assaad overnight Friday from his home in al-Shorouk, a satellite city in the eastern area of Cairo, Mada Masr news reported.

The arrest took place after forces raided his family home, Assaad’s wife told Mada Masr. During the raid, forces assaulted Assaad and his wife and threatened the life of their son, she said.

The forces also demanded Assaad access Matsada2sh news agency’s accounts – where his reports were published – and delete two articles related to the identity of the Egyptians on the plane seized in Zambia.

According to the reports, the plane had been loaded with millions of dollars in cash, gold, and weapons. Details alleged that a Egyptian army major had been aboard the plane, along with several other Egyptian officials.

During the raid, Assaad’s wife said forces told them that the news agency did not understand “the seriousness of what they published”.

The news agency, in a statement posted to Facebook on Sunday, said that its website had also been “subjected to a coordinated attack” by Egyptian authorities.

“Simultaneously, our team of investigative journalists is being subjected to a parallel security attack,” the agency said. “We hold the Egyptian authorities responsible for the safety of our team”.

The names of five Egyptians aboard the chartered plane were initially revealed in a leaked letter apparently sent by their lawyers to Nason Banda, the director general of Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

The letter states that lawyers are acting on behalf of the named individuals and that they have been held in custody since 13 August.

One of the individuals mentioned in the letter reportedly worked as an assistant military attache with the title of a major at the Egyptian embassy in Washington in 2011 and 2012, according to US State Department archives.

Another person named in the letter was a gold trader who owns several jewellery stores in Egypt.

Middle East Eye contacted the Egyptian embassy in Washington for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

The private plane was flown to Zambia’s capital Lusaka from Cairo and seized by Zambian authorities on Tuesday.

It was found to contain over $5.69m in cash, 602 suspected gold bars, and five handguns with 126 rounds of ammunition.

Ten people aboard the plane – six Egyptians, a Dutchman, a Spaniard, a Latvian, and a Zambian citizen – were arrested pending further investigation.

MEE couldn’t independently verify the authenticity of the letter.

GOLD SCANDAL: Let Those Foreigners Go, To Avoid A Diplomatic Wrangle – Chilufya Tayali

LET THOSE FOREIGNERS GO, TO AVOID A DIPLOMATIC WRANGLE AND OPENING A CAN OF WORMS @20:00HRS

Thanks to Ba Fred M’membe he had posted an article about lawyers claiming the detained plane, money and release of 10 (and not 9) foreign nationals. They are also claiming that, the money declared is less than what they had. Ala, fyalakosa ifintu, let them just go. I will talk at 20:00HRS.

Meanwhile read the article below:

Zambian authorities have committed a major violation of their own constitution, and in disregard of due process enshrined in the legislative systems of UN members states, in the detainment of an in-transit private aircraft, its crew and its 8 passengers, says Antoine Vey, the founding lawyer of Vey & Associés (www.Vey-Associes.com).

Vey says the 10 detained crew and passengers have been exposed to inhumane conditions for the last 72 hours with no access no legal counsel.

The aircraft was impounded at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka on August 14 while awaiting a take-off permit. Zambian authorities detained its passengers and confiscated cash and sophisticated mineral testing equipment that was on board and destined to the business activities of the plane’s lessee.

This occurred while passengers on board were issuing SOS messages to airport and police authorities while a group of armed robbers were attempting to board the plane and threaten their safety. No charges have been made against anyone since the detention, says Vey.

The crew and passengers of the private San Remo registered aircraft that flew from Cairo, and landed for refueling and to pick up a prominent South African businessman on his way to Johannesburg.

The businessman on board with his entourage and security detail, armed with fully licensed handguns, were forced physically to disembark, were deprived of their passports and placed under custody first at the airport and, later, at a police station inside Lusaka.

Since being placed in custody, Vey says the detainees have been subjected to inhumane treatment, denied of access to legal counsel and deprived of proper food, sleep, and basic sanitary conditions. Repeated demands for medical help by the ailing were left unheeded, he adds.

Antoine Vey said, “I have taken the decision to dispatch one of my office’s senior human rights counsels to document and monitor the various violations of domestic and international law being committed in Zambia, as well as the risks faced by international businesses seeking to do business in “The Continent of The Future”. The man has just landed in Lusaka.”

Vey added: “We demand the immediate release of the detainees to proper living conditions in an hotel pending the completion of the so-called investigation within a maximum of 48 hours, to be followed by unconditional approval for the aircraft and its passengers, with all their confiscated belongings, to depart Kenneth Kaunda International Airport after receiving the adequate apologies for the gross mistreatment they have received for no fault of their own.

The international community at large, and the African Union in particular, are called upon to closely monitor the developments of this matter over the coming few days.”

ZAMBIA IS OPEN TO GENUINE AND LEGAL BUSINESS AND NOT CRIMINALITY

President Hakainde Hichilema this morning discussed legal issues, criminal activity, and the recent incident involving an impounded aircraft at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA).

Addressing members of the Press at statehouse this morning, President Hakainde Hichilema said that Zambia is open for business but this must be not be misunderstood to mean that it is a safe haven for criminality and illegality.

He noted that crimes happen in all cultures and settings and that the emphasis should be on efficient legal enforcement and the due process.

“Let me be very clear ‘Zambia is open for business, I proclaim to be the Chief Marketing officer, Chief Investment officer for this country. I said so, during the opposition days, but this must not be confused with this invitation, this environment is for genuine investments, trade. Whatever it is must not be misunderstood to mean that there is a safe haven for criminals, local criminals who may be wearing a jacket of being civil servants, who may be wearing a jacket of civil servants, working anywhere including stations or the vice President office, wearing the jacket of investors, gold traders that room is not there, that space is not available.” said President Hichilema.

However, President Hichilema, noted that crime is inevitable in any society populated by people but that laws are put in place to deal with offenses and preserve order.

“Crimes will always take place where they are human-beings, that is why laws are created to address transgressions of human beings and other things. To say that there will be no crime in this country, when we are addressing crime is absurd, there will be crime in the country but the question is how do we address it, when it is occasioned, what is our attitude to crime taking police in our motherland.” said President Hichilema

Adding that while crime remains a reality, the focus should be on how to address it and manage it when it occurs.

President Hichilema emphasized the importance of maintaining a civil and professional approach to law enforcement without looking at color, nationality, language but looking at the offence committed.

“Always arrest people in a civil way as per crime that is committed and when arrests are made following the crime – taking place there is no reference or recognition to what color, status, nationality, what language the speak. When the law is broken let’s focus on the criminality ,let us not focus on other things and start speculating, we will lose focus on what needs to be done.” said President Hichilema.

He also advised members of the public and the media to be truthful and responsible in their reporting and advised the need to stay away from speculative narratives that would draw focus away from the actual matter at hand.

President Hichilema said the public was treated to some unnecessary and emotional drama on social media before Drug Enforcement Commission addressed the press on their findings.

He appealed to members of the public, media to report what is correct, and ask questions to relevant institutions on the ground in-order to not to mislead the public.

“I saw footage of someone who said the plane and cash is missing, but when you as media went to the airport you found the plane, so how is that someone was able to do that ,maybe we must be careful more responsible so we feed the nation with the truth.’ Said President Hichilema.

“If we read stories that are meant to divert us from the main case at hand, you may mislead yourself or mislead your readers and that could lose us the opportunity to broaden the network of criminals that need to be brought on board because now you start chasing the wind instead of chasing the real crime and criminals.

Meanwhile President Hakainde Hichilema has commended the Drug Enforcement Commission for the transparency manner in the way, they dealt with the issue of the aeroplane impounded at KKIA.

He said that he was happy that DEC led journalists to the airport to show the media and prove that the plane reported to have flown out is still at the airport.

Unacceptable Conduct Of The Police And The UPND Youth In Malambo Constituency At A Traditional Ceremony- PF

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saturday, 19th August, 2023

UNACCEPTABLE CONDUCT OF THE POLICE AND THE UPND YOUTH IN MALAMBO CONSTITUENCY AT A TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

I want to start by condemning both, the officers from Zambia Police Service (ZP) and the United Party for National Development ( UPND) Youth for attempting to prevent the 6th Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu from attending a traditional ceremony today in Malambo Constituency of Eastern Province.

I wish to remind the Zambia Police Service that their main mandate is to promote and preserve law and order in the country, and what we witnessed today is truly disheartening and very unpatriotic behavior from the service. Blocking the movement of the 6th President and his delegation who were attending an event at the invitation of His Royal Highness Chief Nsefu of the Kunda people was uncalled for and leaves much to be desired.

I further wish to remind the UPND Youth who physically stood to block the vehicle carrying a former President from proceeding to the main arena, that Former President Lungu is not under any house arrest and when he is invited to such events he is at liberty to honor such invitation. President Lungu just like any other Zambian has rights and privileges that cannot be taken away by members of a ruling party.

Further, UPND members should understand that they are not the first political party to be given the rare honour of governing a country and must therefore not behave in a manner that has potential to divide the country.

In a civilized society like ours with democratic tenets, what happened today in Malambo in the presence of Cabinet Ministers and senior officers from Zambia Police should be condemned by all well meaning Zambians. I am therefore calling on the UPND leadership to put their youths in order and allow other political parties and leaders to participate in national activities without fear of intimidation from its members.

Zambia belongs to all of us and ones political affiliation should not divide us.

ECOWAS military chiefs call for release of Niger President

0

West African military chiefs have called for the unconditional release of detained President Mohammed Bazoum of Niger.

The chiefs made the call at the two-day 48th Extraordinary Meeting of the Economic Community of West African State Committee of Chief of Defence Staff which ended on Friday in Accra.

The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) also called for the release of Mr Bazoum’s family and the members of his cabinet in detention.

Niger Republic military junta has since Monday, July 26, held in detention the President, his family and members of his cabinet.

Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, ECOWAS, who made the call in Acora said. “ECOWAS was ready to go to Niger anytime the order is given”

The troops across the region are ready to respond to the call of duty. “Operational troops are not disclosed, but they are ready equipment-wise, with political will and resources,” he said.

According to Ambassador Musa, ECOWAS was not against the Republic of Niger, however, it was working on Niger coming back to a constitutional rule.

“We have not shut any door, sanctions are on the table, ready to accept dialogue but not any fruitless one

“We are doing it ourselves. The coup in Niger is one coup too many for the region, and we are putting a stop to it,” he said.

Ambassador Musa said the Meeting of CDS on the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force in the Republic of Niger was the second and final before deployment.

The two-day Meeting was a platform for military chiefs from ECOWAS countries to strategise on possible military intervention in Niger.

The military takeover marks the ninth coup or attempted power grab in just over three years in West and Central Africa, the regions that over the last decade had made strides to shed their reputation as a “coup belt”.

ECOWAS leaders last week resolved to activate a standby force for intervention following a takeover by the junta.

The Military Chiefs, among other things, are expected to prepare a force structure and plan of attack in Niger if ECOWAS leaders give the green light.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS last week ordered its standby force to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

Mr Omar Alieu Touray, President of ECOWAS, made the declaration while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Mr Touray further called on the African Union (AU), partner countries, and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.

He said all efforts made to dialogue with the Nigerien military junta had been defiantly rejected by the coup leaders.
