HH and the UPND government: stop mining in the Lower Zambezi!

By Azwell Banda,

Last Friday, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva decreed six new indigenous reserves, including a vast Amazon territory, in a move that also aims to protect critical rainforests from the unchecked exploitation that marked his predecessor’s administration, the world media reports.

Lula da Silva had made this promise and commitment, during election campaigns, to Brazil’s indigenous people – that he would do what he could to protect and preserve their habitats, and the Amazon forest. He still needs to do more. The decrees prohibit mining and other unregulated economic activities in the reserves, while preserving them for use by the indigenous people. This is how a principled politician behaves. Keeping a promise, sticking to his word, in government, Lula has not been seduced by the massive profits and mountains of money to be made in the indigenous forests, especially from large scale mining.

There are absolutely no major, earth shuttering national economic benefits which will accrue to Zambia, today, from the large-scale open pit mining, now expected to start this year, in the Lower Zambezi. Zambia stands poised, once more, to be betrayed by Hakainde Hichilema: when in opposition, Hakainde opposed, correctly, large scale mining activities in the Lower Zambezi. In government, typical of his cunning and lying ways, Hakainde Hichilema and his government are hiding behind “the rule of law”, as is usual their trick whenever a major conflict between their promises when in opposition, and possibilities of defending profits and making money, now that they are in government, arises.

The UPND, if they were a principled political party and seriously committed to a “Green Economy” (something no extreme right-wing, neo-colonial selfish parasitic government such as the UPND government, must be remotely associated with!), would, in the 20 months they have been in government, have cancelled the licence to mine in the Lower Zambezi. Both through Hakainde’s relevant cabinet ministers, or Hakainde himself as President of Zambia, overwhelming constitutional, legal, environmental, climate, and national economic grounds exist to cancel the mining licence, halt and stop the commencement of mining, in the Lower Zambezi.

I hold no brief for any tourism business in the lower Zambezi. I in fact positively despise “tourism” as a local employer. I am fully aware that the bulk of the money especially foreign tourists spend neither fills the pockets of Zambian workers in tourist businesses nor does it significantly boost our national revenues. From hotels, to the smallest tourist chalet, to the most lucrative safari hunting licence, I know that the least benefits actually accrue to local workers! Zambia is no exception from the scandalous low wages, brutal oppression and precarious jobs in the tourism sector. I am demanding that this treacherous betrayal by Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government of allowing mining in the Lower Zambezi be halted, stopped, and the mining licence be cancelled because the damage to our natural environment and the cheap syphoning out of the country of our minerals in the Lower Zambezi, especially under the current pro mining, low tax regime UPND government, Zambia stands to lose both its minerals and precious ecosystem of the Lower Zambezi, for nothing, literally.

Nothing has changed between now, and when Hakainde Hichilema was in opposition, in terms of why Hakainde himself and the UPND opposed mining in the Lower Zambezi. Hakainde Hichilema himself understood this very well, that Zambia stood to lose a lot, including the irreversible and permanent damage to the Lower Zambezi ecosystem, well before his government put in place mining policies and a tax regime which rob Zambia more than they enrich foreign money, in mining.

Hakainde Hichilema and his Green Economy and Environment minister cannot hide behind the fake excuse that they will ensure that mining is done strictly according to ways that will protect the environment. It is impossible to do this.

From the day the courts gave Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government the excuse to allow mining to go ahead, they have neither produced and published the ways by which mining will occur without destroying the Lower Zambezi ecosystem, nor have they published the details of the value Zambia stands to benefit from this act of their treachery. The assumption that Zambians are generally ignorant, do not read “complex” documents, and therefore government need not bother publishing information such as the details of the mining, Zambia’s benefits, and measures to protect the environment reeks of absolute contempt, for Zambians, by the UPND government. Zambia is pregnant with unemployed university degree holders in economics, accounts, business, environment, natural resources, geology, mining engineering, sociology, development, natural sciences, climate change, and many fields.

Many Zambians are aware of our history of mining and large foreign money, and the massive environmental damage Zambia has been left to deal with, after the expiry of mining. Zambia has permanent scars made by mining almost in all our provinces, but very prominent on the Copperbelt and Central Province. Our air, rivers and soils have suffered from mining pollution. Our communities where mining is taking place have never been properly and fully taken care of, let alone has their health been a primary concern, of the mines.

We are all too familiar with our poverty inflicted upon us, by our dependence on mining, even during the time when government was squeezing more value from mining than the UPND government ever will. Zambia is a perfect example of a country suffering from the “resource curse”: we are poor because we are rich in minerals.

Now, with the UPND in government, it is better actually to conserve our minerals by leaving them on and under the ground, for better positioned future Zambian generations, than to allow the UPND parcel out licences to extract our natural wealth and get it exported abroad, while Zambia receives peanuts, literally, and figuratively, from this wealth. Hakainde Hichilema and all his ministers know and understand what I am talking about: they opposed mining in the Lower Zambezi when they were in opposition, with their mining policies and tax regime; mining is not worthy destroying the Lower Zambezi!

It is perfectly possible, on the basis of Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND’s well known facts about their opposition to mining in the Lower Zambezi when they were in opposition, a scientific estimate of the damage to the Lower Zambezi by large scale open pit mining in or near the Lower Zambezi ecosystem, a calculation of the estimate and actual benefits accruing to Zambia from such mining, especially during the time of HH and the UPND in government, and any other related matters, to successfully prosecute HH and some of his ministers for breaching our Constitution and certain laws, which charge them to secure, protect and defend the collective interests of Zambia, which they have betrayed, by allowing mining in the Lower Zambezi.

More than at any time in our history as a young country, Zambia now needed a government genuinely rooted in, and committed, to protect, defend and advance the collective national interests of Zambians as a whole, rather than a government such as the UPND which clearly is advancing the interests of foreign money, especially in mining, even at the expense our precious ecosystems.

More than at any time in our history as a people and country, every adult Zambian today has a responsibility to watch carefully, monitor, protest and prevent any actions by the UPND government designed to cheaply pawn off our collective natural wealth. If we cannot do this for ourselves, we at least owe it to future Zambian generations, to secure today, their lives by preventing a wholesale and extremely cheat extraction of our natural wealth, for export, by foreign money.

It is infinitely, now, more valuable to Zambia, to halt and stop the large scale mining in the Lower Zambezi, than to allow it to go on. We would also need to examine very carefully the distribution of benefits from tourism and other ecosystem friendly economic activities taking place in the Lower Zambezi. We owe it to future Zambian generations to preserve some of our environments, and to keep our natural resources where they are. We have a duty to fight and stop those who are so greedy, selfish, and careless about our natural wealth they are ready and willing to pawn it all, for a song.

As for Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government, they are on record opposing mining in the Lower Zambezi when they were in the opposition. Nothing has changed since then, apart from the fact that now in government, they have the power to stop and prevent mining in the Lower Zambezi. They will one day account, for their betrayal, and actions, over the Lower Zambezi.

Seed of discord: HH vs useless ministers

By Michael B Munyimba

I have been following the recent cat-fights between information minister madam Chushi Kasanda and mama Edith Nawakwi with keen interest.

If these two ladies thought this had been hilarious, we are sorry to say it hasn’t. In fact, I have been prying and prowling with skilled stealth and invisible caution like a legendary leopard preparing to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Yes, of course, I have been wanting to pounce on these two ladies just to pump some ounce of sense even if it could be as little as a grain of sand in their heads. They have been like two high school girls jostling each other over some teenage boyfriend. Yet, Chushi and Nawakwi are no kids, neither are they from the same generation; they are birds from different poles and times. So, seeing the two falling over each other in a bid to unconsciously embarrass themselves in public over an unknown wrangle, one is forced to ask where this whole thing is stemming from.

I have tried to go back to the books of history, trying to see what my memory can excavate regarding these two that could probably help explain the root cause of their conflict, which is now being flared in public domain, but I find none. As earlier indicated, these two are birds from different times and generations. All I know is that Edith was a pretty, intelligent girl with a degree in Economics (Energy) from UNZA, then Imperial College in London, who propelled her way in politics to become the country’s first female finance minister from 1998 to 1999 on president Chiluba’s appointment. True, she was young and vibrant, and vibrant she may still be. What a pretty, intelligent young lady, a delicious “plate” any man would dream to have by his side, the kind you would call beauty with “skopo”; a rare combination indeed.

It was actually Nawakwi who was finance minister when the infamous privatisation of government corporations took place – under her supervision, with HH as an external consultant hired to evaluate the companies and float them on the global market. It wasn’t, and still isn’t (supposed to be) easy to be finance minister at 39 years old, especially when you were female too in a society dominated by male chauvinists. But Edith was a force to reckon with, she was not just any other ordinary young lady to be tossed around. And Chiluba saw that in her, that’s why he gave her that heavy responsibility. She was also the entourage leader of the officials who negotiated for the IMF / World Bank loan deal whose conditions included the deflating of what these funders called a “blotted” civil service which eventually saw over 3,500 civil servants going on voluntary retirement after being promised some substantial, very attractive early retirement service packages. But I will come back to that later, because those retirees still want to know if the IMF/World Bank had secretly directed the government of that time to con those that would volunteer to retire and not pay them their dues as promised, but instead be throwing them crumbs of even as little as K350 in spaces of years until they all died from starvation. Yes, perhaps Edith will one day answer that, because this disease of all governments failing to honour that promise begun during her time – a “disease” that has infected even the present government despite all evidence, court rulings and presidential orders! But let me not go there now, I’m still busy praising Nawakwi for her past work record, she had (and still has) a rich CV and was a good and hardworking, knowledgeable minister.

I also know that Nawakwi and HH were at some point close allies and in very good books with each other in all endeavours; be that political, on principle and at a personal level before HH was even President. It’s again another mystery that today, Nawakwi views anything and everything HH says and or does as repulsive to a point of almost making her want to vomit. That’s some puzzle that may one day drive me to investigate and excavate the reason for the birth of that resentment for each other. Could it then be that it’s this resentment Nawakwi has for HH that aches Chushi Kasanda, prompting her to jump to the defence of her boss with guns blazing, shelling anything with Nawakwi’s name on it? Or could it be that Nawakwi is “slightly” jealous” of young Chushi’s sudden political milestone whom she wants to portray as not having what it takes to be “Minister”, except her looks? Or could it be that Nawakwi only wishes to genuinely conduct checks and balances on government and advice as a veteran, senior politician and experienced ex government official, a stance Kasanda probably refuses to recognise and accept? Olo kapena kuli kudala nkani zinangu zamene sitiziba (or maybe there are some issues we the public don’t know?)

Nawakwi is 64 years old, while Kasanda is 45; there’s almost a 20-year difference between the two, that’s a huge age divide. Is this fight personal or just work related, just based on difference on principle? We hope so, because if it continues, people will be forced to start thinking vintu vinangu (other things as the cause).

Now, the problem I have is not Nawakwi, after all, it’s not Nawakwi who is minister here, it’s Kasanda. You see, as minister, or when you hold certain portfolios in society, you mind how you portray yourself. Mind when and what to say or do certain things. It’s not always that as a leader you must respond to every provocation. Sometimes silence symbolises maturity and wisdom.

Chushi Kasanda should be professional when handling criticism. The post she holds is very sensitive. She should not start making mistakes her predecessor, Dora Siliya was making of running amock at every small thing, telling this one and that one, even shouting at South Africa’s Central Bank governor Tito Mbongeni over a small comment he made regarding the firing of then Bank of Zambia governor Dr Denny Kalylalya; it was so embarrassing.

Which reminds me of the President’s speech last week Thursday, the man almost wept as he solemnly complained that his ministers and permanent secretaries were not doing their work and had concentrated on globetrotting and requesting for subsidised loans to buy huge luxury cars. His desk is always laden with requests from ministers for authority to fly out to carry out funny chores, so that they can be sipping whisky in luxury hotels there but bringing back nothing to show here. And when they are here, they refuse to do the work they were employed to do; they are rude to people they are supposed to serve, they play kings, they come with blotted stomachs full of chips and sausages from their homes, while the people they are mandated to serve wallow in poverty.

Mr President, fire these ministers especially those in sensitive ministries. How can mere ministers be defying your orders, for instance? But that is what they are doing. Look at the issue of voluntary retirees who are not yet paid because their money was stolen within the circles, how many times have you assigned ministers to sort that mess? First it was Doreen Mwamba, did she follow your orders? NO! Now it’s Mulambo Haimbe, is he doing anything? Help me answer that. You gave these people jobs, but it seems they don’t need them. Relieve them and put people who are ready to serve the people and the country, people who know what they are doing. There are a lot of these ministers who are behaving like school boys, put their heads on the block! We shall continue to press on the pedal, until Zambians have the right people in offices, not high school boys and girls!

Ok, naluta, mpaka pa Wednesday futi, salani bwino!

‘I HAVE NO BEEF WITH KAMANGA;’ MINISTER ELVIS NKANDU SAYS

‘I HAVE NO BEEF WITH KAMANGA;’ MINISTER ELVIS NKANDU SAYS

MINISTER of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu has said there is no ‘beef’ between him and Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga.

Last week, Kamanga and Nkandu appeared to be at logger heads, exchanging innuendoes in the media over this week’s exhibition match between Barcelona Legends and Chipolopolo Class of 2022.

Much of the build – up to this historical game has been laced with innuendoes with FAZ not seemingly too involved in the organisation of the match.

Football House also objected to the use of the Nike Jersey that Zambia wore when they lifted the Africa Cup of Nations during a historical night in Libreville back in 2012.

In a video shared by FAZ media, Kamanga had challenged Nkandu to declare interest on matters that involved him and football icon Kalusha Bwalya.

Kamanga revealed that Nkandu was Kalusha’s campaign manager at the 2016 FAZ elective annual general meeting where the former beat the Chipolopolo legend to the post of FAZ president.

However, Nkandu has rebuffed any insinuations that there is a rift between him and Kamanga.

Speaking when he appeared on ZNBC’s Sunday interview, Nkandu said he has total support for the FAZ and there is no way he can have ‘beef’ with Kamanga.

“For those that feel there is beef between myself and [FAZ] president Andrew Kamanga, there is nothing because like I said, I have total support [for FAZ]. In our MOU, we can only support the national team, but we have gone out of our way by supporting the under -17, under – 20 and women’s team which is a baby for FAZ,” Nkandu said.

On the perceived differences between Kalusha and Kamanga, Nkandu said the pair need to iron out their issues if they have any.

“…the issue of Kalusha and Kamanga, the two if they have differed the best they can do is coming together her and iron out if they have differed for me I am above board,” Nkandu said.

COURT ADJOURNS HON CHITOTELA, HON CHILANGWA CASE TO WEDNESDAY

COURT ADJOURNS HON CHITOTELA, HON CHILANGWA CASE TO WEDNESDAY

…. To allow Hon Chilangwa to travel from Lusaka to Kawambwa for the commencement of defense

Kawambwa… Monday 22nd May, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The Kawambwa Subordinate Court has adjourned the case involving Pambashe Member of Parliament Hon Ronald Kaoma Chitotela and his Kawambwa Central counterpart Hon Nickson Chilangwa to Wednesday May 24, 2023 for commencement of defence.

This was after Hon Chilangwa was absent as he was attending another court case in the Lusaka High Court.

This is in a case in which Hon Chitotela, Hon Chilangwa, Kawambwa Mayor Chifumbe Kalumba, Kunda Chitotela, Chabu Chitotela, Davy Kaniki and Charity Chibwe Musanto have been charged with one count of arson, threatening violence, malicious damage to property and four counts of assault.

It is alleged that on August 12, 2021, the two lawmakers and five others while acting together assaulted four UPND members, damaged the windscreen of the Mahindra Bolero motor vehicle valued at K400, 000 before allegedly setting it ablaze and further threatened violence.

The case was before Magistrate Martin Namushi.

The court adjourned the proceedings after the lawyer representing the accused persons submitted that Hon Chilangwa was not before the court as he was attending another court case before the Lusaka High Court.

Counsel Boniface Chiwala submitted an affidavit from the High Court Judge indicating the Accused Person (Hon Chilangwa) was in Lusaka today for the court hearing.

Counsel Chiwala submitted that the case be adjourned to 26th June, 2023 of which Magistrate Namushi declined indicating that the dates provided for the commencement of defense were agreed upon by the accused persons, prosecutor and the lawyers.

However, Magistrate Namushi adjourned the case to Wednesday to allow the accused person to travel from Lusaka to Kawambwa in readiness for the commencement of defense.

And in addressing the people who came to give him solidarity, Hon Chitotela urged them not to relent but continue showing him love and support.

He said he was impressed with the support he has been receiving since he started appearing before the court.

MINISTERIAL INCEST IN DRC: Education Minister Mwaba Kazadi Impregnates His Deputy Minister Aminata Namasia

MINISTERIAL INCEST: Education Minister, Mwaba Kazadi, Impregnates His ‘Alluring’ Deputy Aminata
The minister of Primary Secondary and Technical Education (EPST), Tony Mwaba Kazadi has impregnated his Deputy Minister, Aminata Namasia in the Democratic Republic of Congo( DRC), claiming It was an accident at work.

Tony and Aminata have had a love affair going on for quite some time now. They work together and feelings grew deeper despite the fact that they’re both married.

This was revealed by a DC reporter known as Lungila John on Twitter.
The citizens of DRC lambasted the minister and his deputy, saying they portrayed bad conduct and showed proof of lack of morals in the country.

Archy Lema, a citizen of DRC and a Twitter user said, DRC is a country of shame. She said Aminata has no education to give to any young lady in the country.

Another citizen of DRC said if politicians in the country, especially Tony and Aminata wanted to be referred to as “excellencies” or “honorables”, their conducts should have been more excellent and honorable.
Especially since they are very popular and wealthy unlike other Congolese people.

Although, Deputy Minister, Aminata Namasia, has been a good role model until this incident occurred.
On April 12, 2021, she was appointed National Deputy Minister of primary, secondary and Technical Education in the Democratic Republic Of Congo under Jean-michel Sama Lukonde’s cabinet.

Meanwhile DC is extremely rich in natural resources but has suffered fripolitical instability, a lack of infrastructure, corruption, and centuries of both commercial and colonial extraction and exploitation, followed by more than 60 years of independence, with little widespread development.

In addition, two million children risk starvation and the fighting has displaced 4.5 million people in DRC.
Meanwhile, Aminata opted not to address the scandal when the story hit social media space a few days ago but instead demanded that her privacy be respected.

Aminata, posted on twitter, “beyond my official and public duties, I have a life that must be respected by all. A right guaranteed to all Congolese by our Constitution. Tarnishing my image should not be a tolerated habit.

“Indeed, it could harm not only my commitments, but also the image of my married male colleagues and their homes.
“On the eve of the electoral contests scheduled for December of this year, political detractors can attack my opinions and political actions rather than opting for practices tending to smear my person.”

Harry Kalaba writes UK, USA, EU
…to raise concerns about the silence over corruption, tribal cleansing, governance lapses being perpetuated by the UPND administration
Lusaka, Sunday, May 21, 2023 ( Daily Nation Zambia)

HARRY Kalaba has written to foreign missions in Zambia raising concerns about their deliberate silence on a range of corruption, governance lapses and tribal cleansing taking place under the UPND administration.

Mr Kalaba, the president of Citizens First has written to the British High Commission, the American Embassy and the European Union (EU) to raise concerns on their failure to call out the UPND government on the many corruption scandals, governance lapses as well as harassment and persecution of the opposition political leaders.

In separate letters dated 16th May, 2023 addressed to Nicholas Woolley, the British High Commissioner to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, the United States Ambassador to Zambia and Ambassador Jacek Jankowski, the Head of the European Union in Zambia, Mr Kalaba said there were a lot of corruption scandals, governance issues as well as the tribal cleansing being perpetrated over which foreign missions in Zambia were being agnostic about.

Mr Kalaba is citing the ZCCM-IH shares reclassification scandal, the tribal cleansing at the Ministry of Finance, the single-sourcing procurement ills, and the awarding of contracts to companies associated with President Hakainde Hichilema as some of the corruption and governance issues over which the British High Commission, the American Embassy and the EU had elected silence instead of challenging the new dawn government.

He also listed the failure to follow the law in the awarding contracts to private auditing firms to conduct audits in the Zambia Defence and Security Wings and manuevours aimed at the removal of the Auditor General Dr Dick Sichembe, who has since been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

He explained that it had been under President Hichilema and UPND government that the opposition political party leaders had suffered several arrests for no discernable reason other than political harassment and persecution.

“You will agree with me that if countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the European Union elect silence over the many governance vices taking place under the UPND government such as the scandal at ZCCM-IH, the tribal cleansing with particular interest at the Ministry of Finance and the single-sourcing in the procurement process and the awarding of contracts to companies associated with President Hichilema, then you would be creating an impression to Zambians that your interests are with the UPND and not with the citizens of the country,” Mr Kalaba said.

He stated that it was the view of the Citizens First party that the position taken by foreign mission in Zambia not to speak out and condemn the growing corruption and governance lapses was not only a demonstration of biasness by Zambia’s long-standing partners.
Mr Kalaba said deliberate failure by the foreign missions to Zambia to call out and censure the UPND administration on its crusade to divide the country on tribal grounds by promoting nepotism had the potential to cause the opposition political parties in the country seeking alternative voices.

He said Ambassadors and High Commissioners to Zambia including the head of the EU delegation should have voices that represented Zambians as opposed to siding with the party in government.

“As Citizens First, we seek to pursue a Non-Aligned policy that Zambia has maintained from independence and it is against this background that we maintain a position to work with all those partners who seek to support the welfare of our country as well as the citizens,” Mr Kalaba said.

Kawana must be redeployed into UPND Alliance secretariat

0

By Mike Chungu

The recent past, Director and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Information and Media, Thabo Kawana, earned a lot of media attention – not for good reasons, but notoriety.

He is reported to have imposed himself on talk show programmes featuring government opponents.
Just when he was appointed, I shared some public concerns. I want to reaffirm my original position in this post.
I felt then and still do now that Mr Kawana really worked hard as propaganda chief at UPND Alliance secretariat.

He deserved a job but not where President Hakainde Hichilema has placed him because he was likely to underperform.
He was simply up against many factors including institutional and personality factors which would make him fail. Two of these relate to the job description as director of information (I doubt about media) and other is spokesmanship.

As director of the information, like many critics, I have little to say because I do know his CV and whether it is relevant to the intricacies of the public information management system required at the Ministry of Information and Media.

We are however aware that this was not a professional, but political appointment, so, President Hichilema had his own expectations and I assume he wanted him to be spokesperson to complement, the Minster of Information and Media, Ms Chushi Kasanda.

Those who are familiar with Mr Kawana from the days of his active participation in civil society to his involvement in mainstream politics, would testify that he is good at public speaking. He is also a fast learner which is good for public policy articulation.

To be a spokesperson at that ministry did not require depth of specialisation like the Bank of Zambia, because he was to operate from the generalist perspective. He only required at least awareness of the macro picture. Which he has. So, why underperformance?

The answer is simple and lies in the lack of role clarity among the three officers with authority as official spokespersons, besides Mr Kawana as the director; there is the Minister herself, Ms Kasanda and the Permanent Secretary, Mr Kennedy Kalunga.

Mr Kawana is very competitive and combative. Given space, he is domineering and inclined towards politicking. The ideal space would have been creating a fulltime job within the Alliance party secretariat with free access

to mainstream and social media space with authority to speak on a wide range of issues except the Presidency.
The minister is soft spoken and so far, has been less-confident in matters that fall within the economic and financial cluster. The Permanent Secretary has failed to assert himself so that his strengths come to the fore.

Unless the three officers undertake the team building and identify individual strengths, and how those strengths are strategically deployed, the “Kawana” disaster will worsen.

Saboi Imboela Blasts Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo For Harassing Kitwe Mayor

IMBOELA BLASTS MATAMBO FOR HARASSING KITWE MAYOR

Lusaka, Sunday, May 21, 2023 ( Daily Nation Zambia)

COPPERBELT Minister Elisha Matambo has come under fire for storming the office of the Kitwe Mayor, Mpasa Mwaya and intimidatingly threatening her with unknown reprisals over her social media posting in which she said; ‘He will resign after the press conference.’

Saboi Imboela, the president of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described as harassment and petty behavior by Mr Matambo who stormed the Kitwe Mayor’s office under the guise of paying a courtesy call.

Ms Imboela said the UPND had become so averse to criticism and divergent views that they were ready to come down and harass citizens who were expressing themselves.

Reacting to the decision by the UPND on the Copperbelt to ban Ms Mwaya from ever welcoming President Hakainde Hichilema or attending any state event where the head of State would be the guest, Ms Imboela said Mr Matambo was practicing uncivil and barbaric kind of politics particularly against an elected woman civic leader.

She said there was nothing wrong for any citizen to demand the resignation of President Hichilema if they felt shortchanged by the head of State who had made mega promises but had hardly fulfilled any of the campaign pledges.

She has called on the women movements to rise and condemn Mr Matambo in the strongest terms possible for harassing Ms Mwaya whose work as a civic leader was never being appreciated on account that she was from the opposition, the Patriotic Front (PF).

Ms Imboela said as a woman leader, leading an opposition political party, she had taken Mr Matambo’s threats against the Kitwe Mayor with great exception and that the UPND should desist from victimizing the female gender in politics.

“It is shocking that Mr Matambo, as a Minister of the Copperbelt could take it upon himself to storm the office of the Kitwe Mayor, Mpasa Mwaya tagging the media along with him. There was no need for such an uncivilised show of political power towards a woman who had done nothing wrong. In her post, the Mayor never mentioned Presdent Hichilema to resign and the UPND and their zealots decided to interpret her post to suit their level of understanding. That in all sense was not a courtesy call but Mr Matambo stormed the office of the Mayor to harass and intimidate her. It is unfortunate, unacceptable and barbaric. It should never happen again,” Ms Imboela said.

She said it was time the UPND understood and accepted that Zambia was a democracy and that citizens shall continue to express themselves even if it was to the displeasure of those in government.

Ms Imboela said had Mr Matambo, as Minister of Copperbelt Province taken time to acquaint himself with the office of the Kitwe Mayor, he would have appreciated her efforts in working with the UPND government in fostering development.

Ms Imboela is commending Ms Mwaya for handling Mr Matambo in the most mature manner without being emotive in responding to the accusations that she had demanded the resignation of President Hichilema.

USA Investment In Lobito Corridor Rail Line Is Positive Game Changer – Tayali

USA INVESTMENT IN LOBITO CORRIDOR RAIL LINE IS POSITIVE GAME CHANGER – TAYALI

LUSAKA, Sunday 21st May 2023

GOVERNMENT is elated with the remarks by United States of America President Joe Biden at the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) Meeting being held at Grand Prince Hotel in Hiroshima, Japan.

The US President has announced that his country has already mobilized more than $30 billion in investments to date and it is just getting started.

Minister of Transport and Logistics Hon. MUSEBA FRANK TAYALI, MP has described the move by President Biden as real time game changer in the region and Zambia in particular.

Hon. TAYALI adds that the remarks resonate well with the New Dawn Administration’s desire of seeing Zambia unlock its vast business potential along the corridor through the participation of the private sector in creating jobs and economic growth.

The Minister says, the mere mention by the G7 at its annual meeting, clearly demonstrates the high level of importance and confidence the Group has shown in the member states of the Lobito Corridor.

He says the move brings a high sense of confidence to members states of the Lobito Corridor as this is a booster towards investment that will lead to positive impacts across multiple sectors in the region.

And President Biden says his country has already started working with its partners to make this happen adding that in Sub-Saharan Africa, the U.S. Development Finance Corporation is looking to invest in the first railway project on the continent.
He says the United States is supporting the development of the Lobito Corridor with an initial investment in a rail expansion that may become the primary open access transportation infrastructure connecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia with global markets through Angola.

President Biden adds that the PGII is actively pursuing additional opportunities to connect the initial Lobito Corridor investments across the continent, to Tanzania and, ultimately, the Indian Ocean.

“The rail line would extend from the western shores of Angola to the border of the DRC and Zambia, with the goal of ultimately reaching the Indian Ocean, connecting the continent east to west for the first time,” he says.

He says the project would not only quickly promote trade and create jobs but that it will strengthen supply chains, and incentivize investments in agriculture, and promote food security.

And also, that it is going to enable access to clean energy and digital connectivity across the entire region, creating more security, more prosperity, more opportunities for generations to come.

President Biden says that is what his country’s focus on the key economic corridors is all about, investing in near-term solutions that pay long-term dividends.

According to initial investments, under rail Consortium: The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is currently performing due diligence for a potential financing package of $250 million to finance the Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor – an open access rail line from Lobito Port in Angola to the DRC border.

This deal would be the DFC’s first investment in rail on the continent. This project is the first step to connect and develop trading and economic activity from Angola to the DRC, that can help promote greater investments in agriculture, digital infrastructure, and expanded access to electricity.

Hamwiinde Munamunungu
Lusaka
General Malimba Masheke was born in Senanga on June 17, 1941.
Like other founding officers of the Zambia Army, Gen Masheke was among those who came in 1965 from the United Kingdom in particular to help build up the new army as an officer.
He trained at the famous Royal Military Academy, RMA, in Sandhurst, England, where Generals Kingsley Chinkuli, Benjamin Mibenge, and Dustan Kasote were the pioneers.

After a brief tour of duty in some subunits and units of the Army as a junior officer, General Masheke quickly rose in ranks, omitting the rank of Brigadier General (a one-star general) to become a two-star Major General.

As a Lieutenant Colonel, he founded the Military Intelligence and Security Branch, which oversaw aspects of strategic intelligence operations for the three services of the Army, Air Force, and Zambia National Service Commanders. Above this, he also provided security intelligence education to men and women in uniform for their protection against enemy infiltration and subversion. He headed this branch as a full colonel and later as a major general. In other words, he was the most powerful officer in the Defence Force, as he reported only directly to the respective three service commanders and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the President.

From here, he was appointed Deputy Army Commander and Chief of Staff and doubled as the Chief of Defence Intelligence at the same time.

Throughout this time, he was a close ally of General Kingsley Chinkuli (in other words, like Siamese twins) in planning the development and growth of the Army into a formidable force. They planned the creation of the women’s corps, the creation of regional military commands, the training of regular forces of FRELIMO of Mozambique, the creation and deployment of the home guard, the opening up of several schools of various corps to equip many corps and branches, the creation of infantry brigades, and many more developments we see today in our Army.

Upon being appointed Army Commander, he relinquished the position of Chief of Defence Intelligence to his longtime loyal Air Force officer, Brigadier General Joseph Ngosa Chintomfwa.

Again, upon being appointed Army Chief, he was promoted Lieutenant General (3 stars) when the Zambia National Defence Force was disbanded.

There is one outstanding aspect about General Masheke, and this is his unquestionable loyalty and his commitment to hard work.
He spent several hours scanning several intelligence and security reports from various sources and engaging himself with questions about the liberation struggle for several unliberated countries in southern Africa. He was the right hand of General Chinkuli when he, Chinkuli, was Army Commander and commander of the Zambia National Defence Force.

Within military circles, General Masheke was affectionately known as J. Edgar Hoover, once the head of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI.

Another interesting piece also concerns his simplicity and his down-to-earth attitude. He was a teetotaler and rarely frequented officers messes, but he knew what was being talked about because he had extra ears and eyes. He rarely dressed in suits, and on several occasions he was wary of sitting in front seats, wanting to obscure his identity and appearance.

President Kenneth Kaunda had total trust and confidence in the man. He promoted him to full general, a four-star general, being only the second full general in the country, and appointed him Minister of Defence and Member of the Central Committee of the ruling United National Independence Party, UNIP. As Defence Minister, he was one of the most senior Cabinet ministers who could act as Secretary of State for Defence and Security, the position held by the Kaunda faithfuls or loyalists, like Honourable Grey Alexander Zulu, Mathias Mainza Chona, or Alex Shapi. With his strong intelligence background, he also became the chief spymaster of Kaunda when the need arose.

Towards the finishing line of the UNIP era, Kaunda again rewarded him as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Zambia, being a de facto number two in power, though there was the Secretary General of the Party who was norminally Deputy President of the Republic on paper.
I spent many working years with General Malimba as his staff officer, and I was one of those who greatly benefited from his vast experience and supervision.

After UNIP lost power, General Malimba Masheke went into retirement, joining the farming industry. I wish General a useful retirement and rest from those hectic years.

WHEN A FEW OF US BELIEVED ONE DAY MR HAKAINDE HICHILEMA WAS GOING TO BE THE 7TH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

Indeed many are called but later a few are chosen , it is a fact of life which we must bare as long as we live , what is important is to see progress and delivery of goods and services . It is a difficult time but president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is on course for the right reasons for this country .

There came a moment when I felt if president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was going to be killed by the PF regime , all the hopes of my life and the many zambians out there were going to be shattered , especially that most of the life threats were being done in public to the president and the many followers and those of us who were critics of the PF on social media . Supporting president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA and the UPND objectives would be in a double jorpardy if anything happened before the general elections , supporting president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA made us to live in fear, but the courage was necessary to achieve the struggle , we were better off in opposition knowing that president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was safe and alive , it gave us momentum and strength in our hiding dunes , we gathered more courage , one would imagine loosing the struggle if the life of president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was going to be cut short at the time zambians had proved him to be the right president of this country beyond 2021 .

When am asked how free iam now after PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA got elected as president of the republic of zambia , I felt I got the 21 st century modern independence from fellow zambians that besieged the country for seven (07) years . My personal expressions were democratically approved and my freedoms and rights were automatically restored.

It took twenty three (23 )years of the UPND party to be in opposition , president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s journey to the presidency is of the record period of seventeen (17) years , it is important to reflect and introspect on this dream , it took five attempts in seventeen (17) years to reach the top , this is a very emotional journey but a well deserved achievement .

It may have taken seventeen (17) years to become president of the republic of zambia , unprecedented decisions to realign this country have been done in less than one year and ten months in power , in order to raise the diminished hopes that oppressed the improvement of the living standards among zambians , freedoms and rights of people are a recipe to national development , this is what president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has restored . What president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has done is to realign the policy frame work , is use of the visionary concepts to ensure resources of the country are ploughed back to the people , and part of this success is the decentralisation policy .

I salute the zambian people who followed the journey of quest by president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA and the test of the people who supported along this unforgettable experience which earned is the victory to see Mr HAKAINDE HICHILEMA become president of this country , the rest is history because the nation must move forward with a more purposeful agenda , economic transformation , forgiveness ,unity , love and peace . President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has demonstrated that , authority in office of the presidency should not change the core values of our being and existence with others . I have learnt from president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA a lot more of how to coexist . We thank God to have a president that inspires his people from his personality , archievemts and accomplishments , the principle of visionary excellence is a gift from God and to see it and have takes a lot of sacrifices which are painful , than just seeing anyone wanting to become president .

However president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has reterated that any citizen of this country is free to contest the presidency without any regard for ethnicity or marginalisation , no one will go through what he experienced before , under his authority and time we are free zambians . God bless mother Zambia .

I CRY ZAMBIA IS MY BELOVED COUNTRY

Traditional Leader Applauds Govt for Motivating Farmers with Higher Maize Price

0

Chief Sandwe of the Nsenga Speaking people of Lusangazi district in Eastern Province has praised Government for increasing the white maize buying price to K 280.00 per 50 Kilogram bag in the 2023 crop marketing season from the previous price of K180.00.

The Traditional leader told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS in a telephone interview today that this year’s maize price was excellent and a motivation to most farmers.

The traditional leader however called on the government to be advising farmers in advance which crop to focus on during cultivation which would be bought by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to avoid a situation where farmers focused on a crop that would not be bought.

Chief Sandwe said it was because of the current situation where FRA was not going to buy Soya beans this season when most farmers in his Chiefdom had produced enough of the commodity but had no stable market for it.

He noted that the idea of FRA not to buy Soya beans this season would advantage the briefcase buyers to buy the produce at a very low price, adding that it was better if the agency announced the price for Soya beans despite not buying it.

“The price for maize for this year is excellent and motivating to our farmers but the idea of FRA not announcing the price of soya beans and not buying it this year is demotivating because the briefcase buyers will take advantage of the situation and buy Soya beans at a very low price.

I think the Government must be advising farmers in advance on which crops to focus on to avoid such situations,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Martin Mbewe, a farmer from Village 42 in Riverside area of Lusangazi district called on the government to consider finding an alternative market for Soya beans with a good price.

“The challenge is that most farmers have harvested plenty of Soya beans of which FRA said it will not buy and so, my appeal is that the government should find us another market for Soya beans,’’ he said.

Another farmer, Sarah Phiri, from Village 65 in Ukwimi area explained that a lot of farmers who grew soya beans had plans that after selling the produce, they would use part of the money to buy maize for consumption.

“We had to grow enough Soya beans last rainy season because we had plans to sell it at a good price and buy maize. So, the government must consider our cry,’’ she said.

Liya Mwanza another farmer from Village 62 said she was happy with the K 280-00 per 50 Kilogram bag of maize, adding that, the price of Soya beans must also improve further if farmers were to realize the much-needed profit from their hard earned labour.

Ms Mwanza said most of the maize harvested this year was not promising in the area due to calamities such as floods and farmers relied on Soya beans to give them enough money after selling the crop.

“The price of maize is just okay but the maize from farmers this season is not enough because we had floods and fields were swept away. Our only hope was to sell the Soya beans which performed well so that the money can assist us in buying more maize and other stufF,’’ she said.

The Food Reserve Agency announced the 2023 buying price for two crops produced which are white maize at K 280-00 per 50 Kilogram bag and paddy rice at K 200-00 per 40 Kilogram bag.

Kenya to roll out 1 million locally assembled smartphones in 2 months

Kenya’s Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo
Kenya plans to roll out the first consignment of one million locally assembled smartphones in two months at a unit retail price of Ksh5,484 ($40), in a bid to foster digital access and inclusion.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo said the affordability of smart devices has been a major hindrance to digital inclusion, hence the need to produce the gadgets locally.

He said the low-cost smartphones are being assembled at the Konza Technopolis in Malili, Machakos County.

“Based on feasibility studies undertaken, we can locally assemble smartphones at a unit cost of about $40. We’ve partnered with the private sector to ensure in the next two months, we can roll out our first consignment of low-cost smartphones,” Owalo said during the official launch of the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) week at the Nairobi Safari Park on Wednesday.

“We are aware of the affordability crisis of smart devices as a potential hindrance to the ability of citizens to tap the full potential that this sector presents and we have actively engaged stakeholders in private and manufacturing to produce low-cost smartphones,” he added.

ICT declines to speak

The Business Daily has asked for access to the assembling plant to independently verify the operations and have access to prototypes, but the ICT officials are yet to grant the request.

The CS also declined to reveal the exact firms assembling the phones.

The CS also did not disclose the companies the government has partnered with. The only firms the state has direct control of are Telkom and Safaricom.

If the deal goes as planned, then the state will have found a way to rekindle hopes in the Konza City dream which has failed to attract enough investors to support its take-off.

In 2013, 14 firms expressed interest in the first stage of the Konza City project, dubbed the African Silicon Savannah, which was set to be carried out in four phases of five years each.

These firms included Safaricom and Wananchi Online- a Kenyan internet service provider.

Foreign companies were Chinese firm Huawei Technologies, Korean electronics giant Samsung and Telemac of the US among others.

Attempts to reach the Telecommunication Principal Secretary Prof Edward Kisiang’ani to respond to our questions on the firms behind the local assembly of smartphones failed.

In March 2022, Kenya inked a three-year deal dubbed the Economic Innovation Partnership Program with the Korean government to fast-track the actualisation of the Konza City dream.

Smartphones penetrations

Official data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) show that penetration of feature phones or non-smartphones is 68.1 percent as of the end of December 2022.

Smartphone penetration in the country stands at 60.2 per cent.

“The number of mobile subscriptions increased from 65.5 million reported last quarter to 65.7 million during the reference period, representing a penetration rate of 133.1 percent,” said CAK in the latest quarterly report.

Owalo said the low uptake of smartphones has hindered the uptake of other government and financial services.

The state also plans to accelerate digital inclusion through an initial 5,000km of the planned 100,000km of fibre optic cable by June this year, a project partially funded by the World Bank.

The CS said Ksh68.55 billion ($500m) from the World Bank is meant for digital inclusion for fibre connection across the country.

“We have received $500 million from the World Bank towards the digital transformation agenda, under the Kenya digital economy acceleration programme,” said Owalo.

“We have a target of rolling out 5000km of optic fibre by June 30. We have onboarded contractors and reached out to other government agencies including the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Kenya Pipeline Company, Kenya Railways Corporation, and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company and we’ll be good to go,” he added.

Under the infrastructure pillar of the country’s digital transformation agenda, the five-year plan to lay an additional 100,000km of the national fibre optic cable was first announced by President Ruto in October last year, a month after he assumed office.

Some 52 per cent of the proposed 100,000km of the optic cable will be laid by the government while the rest will be done by the private sector.

The project is aimed at hastening internet connectivity across the country, as well as making its access stable and reliable.

President Mnangagwa Threatens to Revoke Licenses of Businesses Disabling Swipe & EcoCash Machines

President’s Warning to Businesses
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned businesses that are disabling swipe and EcoCash POS machines to force customers to pay in United States Dollars, stating that they risk having their trading licenses suspended.

The President stated that such businesses would have to suspend trading until they are able to handle transactions in all currencies as stipulated by the laws of Zimbabwe. This comes at a time when prices have been skyrocketing.

Deliberate Disabling of Point-of-Sale Gadgets
The President made the pronouncement in his weekly column in the Sunday Mail. President Emmerson Mnangagwa wrote:

“We are even aware of certain businesses which deliberately disable point-of-sale gadgets in order to force the consumer to buy key goods in one currency, contrary to the law of the land. Maybe the time has now come for the government to insist that such businesses who employ such tricks should suspend trading until they are able to technically handle transactions in multi-currency, as mandated by our laws.”

Addressing Business Sector Responsibility
The President also spoke about how some businesses are betraying the government’s trust, resulting in the prevailing price madness.

“Let me say that we made all the above concessions in good faith and in the belief that we have a responsible business sector whose sole purpose is to manufacture and sell goods and services in the marketplace. Yet it is becoming increasingly clear that our trust is being abused and even betrayed. We even wonder if we are dealing with business anymore or with politicians disguised as company executives seeking a political upset. Privileges can be withdrawn in the same way they are granted. Equally, politicians seeking to engineer market failures for definite political outcomes will be dealt with as political opponents, and through rules appropriate to politics.

Sanctions for Rule Violations

“Above all, short-circuiting set rules and cutting corners in business attract very stiff sanctions. Those who break our exchange control rules or engage in money laundering will only have themselves to blame. No one in business should doubt my government’s resolve to correct blatant market failures and to counteract and foil sinister moves to destabilize our economy. The government’s responsibility is to protect the consumer and ensure stability in the market and within the country. We will take all necessary measures to ensure stability, including painful ones if necessary.”

IT IS THE DUTY OF THE OPPOSITION TO PROVIDE CHECKS AND BALANCES IN A DEMOCRACY – NAKACINDA

Lusaka….. Saturday, 20 May 2023 (Smart Eagles)

In providing checks and balances we come across information which even if in our judgment is inimical to the interest of the Zambian people, we disseminate because we provide checks and balances, Patriotic Front Chairperson For Information and Publicity has narrated to the Court.

This came to light when defence was opened in the matter Hon Nakacinda is charged with one count of alleged defamation of the President.

Hon Nakacinda said when he comes across information, they speak to it expecting that those in Government would respond and either clarify, confirm or deny if the information received is not correct

It is alleged that Nakacinda on December 13, 2021 at Lusaka, with intent to bring the name of President Hakainde Hichilema into hatred, ridicule and contempt, did cause to be published defamatory matter by word of mouth, where he addressed people at the High Court of Zambia, which was also broadcasted by Muvi television that, “His Excellency President Mr Hakainde Hichilema had begun to summon Judges at his private residence, intimidating and coercing them to frustrate PF legal battles.”

Nakacinda told the court that the people who reported him to the police over defamation of the Republican President, Hakainde Hichilema did not depict the exact statement that he gave in the video.

Nakacinda told Lusaka magistrate, Ireen Wishimanga he issued the alleged statement contained in the video against the President in defence of the country ‘s democracy.

He said that what he communicated was that he had information that the president was intending to begin to summon judges to his community house.

“Just after Mr Hichilema was inaugurated on August 26 2022, as a politician in opposition he felt the need to play his role of providing checks and balances. I needed to symbolically put a gadget that demonstrated that in view of the many promises and pledges that the UPND had made and their responsibility to uphold the rule of law and uphold tenancy of democracy in a multiparty democracy.

“On August 28 2021 I launched an operational binoculars that aid to view if you are viewing something and not be able to catch details of the image, you are trying to see. It has a mechanism to zoom that image closer so that you can see properly . As a symbol you are going to be able to be watching every step, action pronouncement that our colleagues in Government make……….,”he said.

Nakacinda also told the court that in upholding democratic tenets or indeed failure to the promises or pledges made by the new dawn Government it would bring to the fore for the Zambian people to be aware of a lot of issues because they are the final authority.

The matter has since been adjourned to May 31.

TALK ABOUT US OR OTHER INDIVIDUALS AND NOT THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT- KITWE MAYOR TOLD OFF LIVE ON CAMERA BY HON MATAMBO

TALK ABOUT US OR OTHER INDIVIDUALS AND NOT THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT- KITWE MAYOR TOLD OFF LIVE ON CAMERA BY HON MATAMBO

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo yesterday told off Kitwe Mayor Mphasa Mwaya live on camera to play with them or any other individuals but not the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema.

Hon Matambo took advantage of the courtesy call he made on her to react what was reported in some sections of the media, WhatsApp groups as well as on the internet where she was allegedly quoted to have said that she hoped the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema resigned after the press conference he held at State House on 18th May ,2023.

The Copperbelt Minister made it clear in black and white that he was very disappointed with the Kitwe mayor’s remarks.
” I’m really very disappointed in you ,I hope it is not true ,but if it is true that you said those things I’m disappointed to be honest with you .” Hon Matambo told the Mayor.

He further said that President Hakainde Hichilema wants to develop the country and work with anyone regardless of which party one belongs to .

And a Blubbering Ms Mphasa Mwaya who seemed to have been caught-napping at the turn of events responded that at no point did she mentioned the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, but however, confirmed to have released a press statement in her capacity as a member of Patriotic Front (PF) member of central committee and not as a mayor.

She was at pain to justify the statement she allegedly authored which is now in public domain.
While all this was happening, United Party for National Development ( UPND) Copperbelt Province Youth Chairman Mr Wallen Hinyama held a Press briefing at UPND Kitwe District office where he gave a timely advise to Kitwe Mayor that she should find something of value rather than attacking the Head of State who is doing so much to rebuild Zambia,a country that was left almost grounded operationally with nothing ticking!

The Copperbelt UPND Youth Chairman took a swipe at the mayor further advising her to find a husband so that she can learn good morals as a woman.

Mr Hinyama also accused the mayor of frustrating the efforts the government is making in the way she is running the council chamber and allegedly assembles street kids and other vulnerable members of community to embarrass the Head of State each time he is in the district.
” It is unacceptable that the mayor is demeaning the works of UPND government when she is continuously commissioning CDF projects that are being funded by the same government .

Meanwhile,UPND Kitwe district Youth Chairman Bowas Kapata directed UPND youths not to allow the Kitwe Mayor any where near attending presidential functions because she has declared herself an enemy of the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema.

ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION, TWO REALITIES?

ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION, TWO REALITIES?

By Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya

“How dare he speak ill of the President? Stay in your lane! Aba nabo!” That’s the tone I expect as feedback from this article; largely because the country is incredibly polarised and quite heavily politicised. This is actually quite fair, seeing as most of the country’s leadership is either by politicians or people close to politicians. As a consequence, supporters of said people tend to defend their own, and passionately so.

This will certainly not stop my article. I was fortunate to be one of the people that attended President Hakainde Hichilema’s presser at State House on the 18th of May, 2023. But no, I must add that I have actually attended all of President HH’s (as I like to call him) briefings. I have had the further privilege of being given the chance to ask him some questions, alongside other journalists.

At all his briefings, President HH seems to spend a decent amount of time registering his successes – which like anything else are quite arguable, but he can have that. Dare not ask him about his predecessor! Unfortunately, this incredibly reduces the chance for the press to ask their critical questions as there’s little time, but even if they did, it’s not like the President will give definite answers. With decades of experience, President HH has very solid experience as a politician and this tends to work well for him in evading questions with rather very general responses that for some reason seem to impress his supporters.

While this is the case, it might appear that President HH is living a different reality. It is important to mention that unlike what the President may believe, Zambia is certainly not a utopia, after he assumed office. Quite the contrary if we’re keeping it a hundred (pardon my slang, I’m trying to keep my young friends in the loop – like the President often does).

In examining President HH’s tenure, it is important to acknowledge his achievements while recognizing that they alone are not the solution to Zambia’s challenges. One notable accomplishment is the commendable Napsa 20% partial withdrawal initiative. However, it is crucial to question whether this measure aligns with the President’s perception. Despite this withdrawal option, the majority of Zambians still struggle to afford housing even with their entire NAPSA pension, let alone with a mere 20%.

Meanwhile, as the President and his health minister focus on allegations of drug theft and engage in political battles, the non-functional state of the Cancer Diseases Hospital continues to claim lives. Since mid-last year, the hospital has been without a functioning Linear Accelerator. While the minister of health is occupied defending herself against criticism, people are losing their lives.

An overarching issue lies in the President’s inconsistency. His words often outweigh his actions. Last year, his administration promised to procure new linear accelerators by the year’s end, yet no progress has been made. Similarly, he assured the nation that the issues surrounding KCM would be resolved by the first quarter of 2023, yet the situation remains stagnant.

Mining plays a vital role in Zambia’s economy, and any disruptions in this sector have far-reaching consequences. Despite the President’s promises of a swift resolution to the challenges faced by the mining industry, several months have passed with no tangible progress made.

Furthermore, senior government officials are disregarding media freedoms by giving uninvited interviews, a matter the President has chosen to ignore completely.

While the President believes that the lives of Zambians have significantly improved, it is vital to question this narrative. As a journalist interacting with numerous individuals, their experiences don’t always align with the President’s assertions. It raises the question: Is the President residing in a different reality altogether?

At the first briefing, I raised a crucial question to the President regarding a leaked audio involving two high-ranking officers within his administration. The conversation revealed a plot to undermine the independence of an opposition political party, which has effectively been reduced to insignificance. The President assured that an investigation was underway, but to this day, no progress has been made. It appears that the matter has been conveniently forgotten, perhaps reflecting our collective tendency to have a short memory.

In the beginning of 2022, the President and his government pledged a seamless farming season with timely and sufficient delivery of agricultural inputs. Regrettably, this turned out to be a catastrophic failure. How can the President’s assurances of timely input delivery be trusted now, considering his past bold statement during a BBC interview, where he claimed his choice for the Bank of Zambia governor would astonish citizens, only to ultimately appoint Edgar Lungu’s former candidate?

Speaking of Edgar Lungu, it begs the question: When will President HH move beyond his feud with his predecessor? This ongoing rivalry serves no purpose for the nation and is rather tiresome. It is time for the President to focus on substantive issues and prioritize the needs and aspirations of the Zambian people over personal animosity.

In conclusion, while recognizing the President’s commendable achievements, it is essential to critically evaluate his actions and the realities experienced by the Zambian people.

Unaddressed concerns regarding the leaked audio, mining challenges, failed promises in the agricultural sector, and an incessant feud with his predecessor highlight the need for a more consistent and proactive approach from President HH. Only by confronting these issues head-on and aligning rhetoric with concrete actions can Zambia truly progress and achieve a brighter future for all its citizens

Reserves drop by $300m in 3 months

The Bank of Zambia – BOZ has disclosed that Zambia’s international forex reserves have dropped by about $300m. Dropping International reserves balances are indicative of expected future stress on the Kwacha as they are seen as a buffer to defend against steep currency depreciation

BOZ Governor Dr. Denny Kalyalya revealed that propping up the Kwacha and various government uses such as debt service coupled with diminished receipts from the mining sector resulted in the net outflow.

Dr. Kalyalya stated that “support to the market, multilateral debt service, and Government uses contributed to the decline in gross international reserves to equivalent to 3.3 months of import cover or US$2.8 billion prospective imports”.

The reserves have dropped at end of March 2023 from US$3.1 billion equivalent to 3.8 months of import cover. US dollar reserves have proved to be a challenge for successive administrations as the traditional source of forex – copper mining which accounts for over 70% of Zambia’s exports is controlled by foreign privately owned companies.

Negotiating with these global mining firms to bank their sales proceeds in Zambian banks or even foreign banks with branches in Zambia has proved futile, resulting in the Kwacha perpetual depreciation trend.

An effort to diversify to gold reserves which could be stockpiled using a state owned company suffered a major setback after the ministry of mines abruptly closed a huge gold find that was seen as a viable alternative.

Kasenseli gold mine of Mwinilunga was closed towards the end of 2021 initially indicated as temporal and that it would take three months to deal with some ‘operational and transitional’ issues but the gold mine has now been closed for over one year.

As it stands, the above 3 months import cover remains within a safe margins by global standards but another quarter of bleeding will result in below 3 months import cover and resultant escalated volatility of the Kwacha.

The Zambian government needs to urgently find ways to claw back forex earnings from the traditional copper exports after awarding of heavy tax incentive. There is need to prioritize and immediately reopen Kasenseli gold mine and re-energize the BOZ gold alternative reserves build up as well as find innovative ways to recapitalize and resume production at Mopani and KCM.

BE CREDIBLE IN YOUR PROVISION OF CHECKS AND BALANCES- MASUMBA URGES OPPOSITION.

By Ludia Phiri(Venus Publishers)

FORMER Patriotic Front (PF) Mufumbwe Member of Parliament Stephen Masumba has called on opposition political parties to be credible in the way they offer checks and balances to the incumbent government.

Mr. Masumba, who is known for his public acrobatics and former deputy minister of youth and sports says politicians must do away with politics that are meant to bring hatred if they are to last in the political space.

Masumba however, added that President Hakainde Hichilema is a man of equity following pronouncements he made at a media briefing at state house yesterday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Masumba acknowledged that President Hichilema is working on the equal dustribution of wealth without looking at tribal lines.

“I would like to call upon the opposition to cut down on politics of insults and offer credible checks and balances if they are to continue being relevant in politics”. He said.

He further said that politics of insults should be halted adding that such politics are long gone and that should never be embraced by any politician of the 21st century.

He has since reminded members of the opposition that the people of Zambia are no longer interested in politics of discrediting one another but in ideas that will develop the country.

He added that the current head of state is one person that loves competition of ideas and not personal bickerings and that he is focussed on fulfilling his campaign promises he made in during campaigns.

He has further advised those in political space to quit causing a rift between former president Edgar Lungu and President Hakainde Hichilema in order for peace to reign.

Meanwhile, as a former deputy minister of youth and sports, Masumba called on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga to pay a courtesy call on the minister of youth and sports Elvis Nkandu, whenever he feels aggrieved as that shows professionalism.

NAKONDE WOMAN DIVORCES HER HUSBAND OVER SMALL MANHOOD

NAKONDE WOMAN DIVORCES HER HUSBAND OVER SMALL MANHOOD

“The couple has been in marriage for 11 months only”

A 25 year old nurse of Nakonde who recently got married to a Clearing Agent has left her 11 months old marriage after her hubby failed to make her pregnant and satisfy her in bed due to his strange manhood which very small and short like that of a 6 year old boy.

Abigirl Nakamba Sinkala who is still awaiting government deployment, took her husband Moris Sinkala to court last week alleging that in the 11 months they have been together, he has only managed to lay with her 5 times due to lack of sexxual power.

Ms Nakamba also accused her hubby of annoying her more when he hired his best friend (a teacher by profession) to sleep with her so that the newly married couple could have a child of which she refused. She explained that Mr Sinkala has a small manhood (size of her last small finger) which ejects on its own less than a minute of sexxual intercoursee.

When asked by the court if what his wife was saying is true, the visibly disturbed Sinkala admitted but accused the relatives of the other girl he wanted to marry at first of being responsible for his predicament.

“Yes your honour, I have been failing to sleep with my wife due to my small manhood. It became small and short the day after our wedding. My first fiance’s relatives bewitched me”, he said as he struggled to control his tears in court. Asked why he told his wife to sleep with his best-friend in order for her to fell pregnant, Mr Sinkala said he did that for he wanted his wife to be happy because apart from not making her pregnant, he was also failing to satisfy her in bed since April 2020 due to manhood problems.

The court allowed the couple to divorce and the woman left for Kitwe. She refused to carry anything he bought her including a vehicle, laptop and two phones. She even surrendered the papers for the house he had bought for her mother. She is now in Kitwe with her elder brother. She has a degree in nursing but not yet deployed.

President Hichilema And Ramaphosa Among African Leaders To Lead Peace Missjon On Russia/Ukrainian War

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA AND RAMAPHOSA AMONG AFRICAN LEADERS TO LEAD PEACE MISSJON ON RUSSIA/UKRAINIAN WAR

Putin and Zelensky to discuss a possible plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to South Africa’s President.

Cyril Ramaphosa spoke with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts by phone over the weekend, a spokesperson for his office said. They agreed to host ‘an African leaders’ peace mission’ in Moscow and Kyiv respectively.

The leaders of Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda and Egypt plan to join Mr Ramaphosa on the mission, the president said. He added that Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky gave him the go-ahead to ‘commence the preparations’.

No details were provided on the possible parameters of the talks. Mr Zelensky has previously said he would not consider a peace deal to end the 15-month war until Russian forces withdraw fully from Ukrainian territory.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres was briefed on the African delegation’s planned meetings and ‘welcomed the initiative’, Mr Ramaphosa said.

Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky have both agreed to separate meetings with a delegation of African heads of state to discuss a possible plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to South Africa’s president

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has previously said he would not consider a peace deal to end the 15-month war until Russian forces withdraw fully from Ukrainian territory

Of the leaders due to meet with Mr Ramaphosa, Zambia and Congo lean to support the west. Senegal and Uganda are more Russia-leaning. Egypt has sought a balanced position on the conflict.

‘I agreed with both President Putin and President Zelensky to commence with preparations for engagements with the African heads of state,’ the South African leader said, speaking at a press conference in Cape Town during a state visit by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

‘We’re hoping we will have intensive discussions.’

He did not give a specific timeline for the visit or other details, saying only that the conflict had been ‘devastating’ and Africa ‘is also suffering a great deal’ from it.

African countries have been badly hit by rising prices of grain and by the impact to world trade attributed to the war.

Ramaphosa said the African leaders have been talking and consulting in recent months on how the continent can facilitate the end of the war.

‘This we have been talking about as African leaders, because we concluded that conflict in that part of the world, that much as it does not affect Africa directly in the form of deaths and destruction to our infrastructure, it does have an impact on the lives of many Africans with regards to food security. Prices of fertiliser, cereals and fuel have gone up,’ he said.

‘Facilitated by the Brazzaville Foundation, we have been able to have these discussions, and principal to our discussions are efforts towards a peaceful resolution to the devastating conflict in the Ukraine, its cost in human lives and the impact on the African continent.’

Ramaphosa did not give a specific timeline for the visit or other details, saying only that the conflict had been ‘devastating’ and Africa ‘is also suffering a great deal’ from it

Considered one of Moscow’s closest allies on the continent, South Africa says it is impartial and has abstained from voting on U.N. resolutions on the war in Ukraine

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year but the war has largely stalemated, although Ukraine is expected to start a counteroffensive soon to try to take back land occupied by Russia and push Putin’s forces back east.

Considered one of Moscow’s closest allies on the continent, South Africa says it is impartial and has abstained from voting on U.N. resolutions on the war.

The announcement came a day after Ramaphosa said South Africa had been under ‘extraordinary pressure’ to pick sides in the conflict.

This followed accusations from the United States that Pretoria supplied weapons to Moscow – a move that would break with its professed neutrality.

The peace mission will be the latest in a flurry of so-far unsuccessful diplomatic efforts to still the war.

A Chinese special envoy was expected to arrive in Kyiv for a two-day visit on Tuesday to promote Beijing-led peace negotiations.

Last week Guterres told a Spanish newspaper that peace negotiations were ‘not possible at this moment’ with both sides ‘convinced that they can win.’

But Ramaphosa said the African initiative had met with ‘cautious support’ in Washington and a number of European capitals visited by ‘facilitators’ tasked with presenting the plan.

The effort could help Pretoria rehabilitate its image as a neutral player and mediator, following accusations that it has drifted towards Russia.

The commander of South Africa’s ground forces was in Moscow to discuss military cooperation on Monday, in the latest of a series of incidents that critics cite as evidence of a tilt towards the Kremlin.

Last week, the US envoy to Pretoria said that the United States believed weapons and ammunition had been laden onto a Russian freighter that docked at a Cape Town naval base in December.

On Tuesday, South Africa’s defence minister, Thandi Modise, denied the accusation in an interview with local newspaper the Mail & Guardian.

‘Everybody now sees the spook called South Africa. I can tell you that categorically, we did not send fokol, not even a piece of Chappies to Russia,’ she said referring to a local popular bubble-gum brand and using an Afrikaans expletive meaning ‘nothing at all’.

On Monday, Ramaphosa said South Africa would not be drawn ‘into a contest between global powers’ despite having faced ‘extraordinary pressure’ to do so.

South Africa has refused to condemn the conflict in Ukraine, which has largely isolated Moscow on the international stage, saying it wants to stay neutral.

In a veiled criticism of that stance on Tuesday, Singapore’s Lee said condemning Russia’s invasion was a matter of principle.

‘One country cannot invade another with impunity…a clear disapproval has to be given,’ he told the press conference in Cape Town, flanked by Ramaphosa.

‘We remain friends with Russia but we cannot approve of what has been done’.

$400 million Was offloaded in First Quarter to prop up the Kwacha

$400 million Was offloaded in First Quarter to prop up the Kwacha

Pressure on the local currency – Zambian Kwacha to depreciate further has escalated in the first quarter – Q1 (January to March of 2023) with the central bank – BOZ revealing that they had to offload more dollars to support and enable smooth flow of imports and in effect the economy.

BOZ sited the reduced forex inflows from mining taxes which have been low in the last nine months. Government had some time back designated mineral royalty taxes to be remitted in US dollars to shore up forex reserves held locally, but receipts have continued to plummet.

According to the monetary committee statement availed to the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, BOZ Governor Dr. Denny Kalyalya stated that “to support the market in [Q1] in meeting some critical imports, the Bank of Zambia injected about US$400 million”.

Mining taxes paid through the central bank have plummeted in the recent past, as per graph attached, mineral Royalty Tax receipts alone are down from over $210 million for Q3 (June to August) 2021 to only $72 million in Q1 2023.

This revelation by BOZ on reduced mining tax receipts perhaps exposes the Zambia Revenue Authority – ZRA that seem to be reporting that they are surpassing revenue collection targets for the mining industry.

Analysts say some of the fiscal policies that Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane has initiated such as giving handsome mining tax incentive without securing written guarantees and timelines for actualizing of promised mining investments have now started to hurt an economy already besieged with delays in debt restructuring negotiations which may as well be down to his miss-calculation .

This is creating a precarious situation even for the central bank – BOZ to perform its functions of price stability or for its monetary interventions to attain the desired results in the medium term. Moreover, iconic mines such as Mopani, KCM and now Kasenseli remain in limbo with government losing more production time and money.

Ideally, government should have proceeded to source for bridge financing and continued to run these mines and sustain production even as negotiations are going on. This could guarantee continued tax revenues and sustained local economic activities for the five towns of Kitwe, Mufulira, Chingola, Chililabombwe and Mwinilunga that are directly impacted.

The problem now is that these complex and cut throat global mine operators are aware that if the mines remain unproductive, government, mine workers unions, local suppliers and other local stakeholders will get desperate and end up being arm twisted or simply bow down to corrupt offers that will in the end lead to Zambia again getting a raw deal.

The bottom line is that President Hichilema seems to be making genuine efforts and seems to have the desire to make a mark on the Zambian economy, but he may need to accept that the team that helped him ascend to the highest office may not be competent to now deliver and implement his vision.

History tells us that despite political mud that is thrown on each of Zambia’s successive leaders, each of the past President has been able to deliver tangible results that are there for all those with clear and un-politicized lenses to see.

As for President HH, it’s now clear even for the uninitiated to see that some of his ministers and top team members are struggling. This is clear even from talking to loyal UPND members and sympathizers. Even our random checks with experts and general members of the public reveals that some are actually doing more damage than good.

And before the entire first 5 years mandate finish, waiting on some of his ministers or top team members to up their game, it is perhaps time for HH to consider making some critical changes and replacements. But if the underperformance picture that members of the public are seeing is out of lack of information, then only time will tell.

Israel Adesanya seemingly takes swipe at ex-girlfriend after reports of her suing him for half of his wealth

After reports circulated about Israel Adesanya’s ex-girlfriend planning to sue him for half his wealth, the UFC middleweight Champion recently took to social media to seemingly put his former flame on blast, Premium Times reported.

The 33-year-old kickboxer and his ex-girlfriend, Charlotte Powdrell, were said to be romantically involved for a long period before they broke up. Though they do not share any children and never married, there have been reports that Powdrell intends to sue the Nigerian-born New Zealander for half of his wealth.

It appears Adesanya is having none of that as he took to his Instagram Stories to seemingly take a swipe at Powdrell. In the post that was seen by mmanews.com, Adesanya, popularly known as “The Last Stylebender,” appeared to describe his ex-girlfriend in all manner of words.

“I wish I let you drift away into a miserable existence because misery loves company and you love being a victim. Any whe, sign the tenancy agreement ASAP. Also, I really hope you lawyer up and come for my assets like you said. I hope you try to affect my businesses such as Puma with your weak b*h threats,” the 33-year-old fighter wrote.

“Please please do so, let’s pay for it all, you have a sugar daddy now who will pay for everything. For someone who moves in silence, he sure does talk a lot about you guy’s plans lol,” he continued before adding: “Mentally drain me… hahaha!! You are pathetic, even worse than when you said ‘well you’re gonna have to break up with me then.’ So you can be a victim just the way you like it.”

Adesanya also claimed the person he was addressing never helped him make money as that individual “only ever cost me money.” “Now you think you deserve half my s*t? What an entitled pompous BRT you are. I spit on you. I dare you to start your stupid campaign. Your threats don’t work here anymore, they’re fired!

“You are responsible for your emotions. You don’t care about my life cuz you’ve sold info about me, so I don’t care about yours. I don’t even hate you, I just don’t care about you. I’ve not been in love with you for a while.

“In summary, I am glad all this happened. I wouldn’t change a f**king thing. I’m glad I finally have someone who can stand next to me and not feel like my shine takes away from theirs, confident in her own light.”

“This will be the last time you are hearing from me. My lawyers will be in touch. Bye Stylebender’s ex,” he concluded.

Adesanya’s current “situation” comes after he received a huge payday following his knockout victory over Alex Pereira at UFC 287 to reclaim his UFC middleweight championship belt. For that win, he reportedly took in a $2 million paycheck.

According to Billionaires Africa, the earnings include a guaranteed payout of $1 million. Other additional earnings include sponsorships, pay-per-view earnings, and a win bonus worth almost $100,000. Additionally, his $2 million payout puts his estimated total earnings at $4.1 million. Which makes him the highest-paid athlete on the UFC’s roster.

Zandile Khumalo takes to the stand: Demands justice for Senzo Meyiwa

0

Zandile Lorraine Khumalo, one of the people who was in the house when Bafana Bafana star goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed in October 2014, has begun giving evidence before the High Court in Pretoria.

Zandile, a musician, is the sister of musician and actor Kelly Khumalo who was dating Meyiwa when he was killed.

Zandile was led in giving evidence by prosecutor, State advocate George Baloyi. He asked her to tell the court about the relationship between the soccer star and the diva.

“Did they have a relationship, a love relationship?” Baloyi asked.

Zandile responded: “They had a beautiful relationship. They loved each other to an extent where they would follow each other everywhere.”

She said their relationship started around 2012 or 2013.

Meyiwa was killed on October 26, 2014, while in the company of his girlfriend and the mother of his child, Khumalo, in Vosloorus.

In the house that day were Meyiwa; Kelly; her younger sister, Zandile; their mother, Ntombi Khumalo (MaKhumalo); Longwe Twala; Meyiwa’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala’ Kelly’s then four-year-old son, Christian; and Thingo, her daughter with Meyiwa.

Zandile said that at the time of his death, Meyiwa was living with Kelly in Mulbarton.

Earlier on Thursday, the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria granted permission for broadcast media outlets to attend and do an audio broadcast of Zandile’s testimony.

She had made an application against the media broadcast on Monday.

The court ruled that, as in the case of the previous witnesses, visual images of the witness should not be broadcast.

“The court finds that where a broadcast of visual images of her testimony may bring unintended, adverse consequences to bear upon her, there is no evidence proving that an audio broadcast of her evidence may do the same,” Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela ruled in court.

“Taking all prevailing circumstances into consideration, the court finds that witness number one did not advance sufficient reasons to justify an order restricting both visual and audio broadcast of her evidence.

“At the same time, there is no reason to subject witness number one (Zandile) to an atmosphere during the course of her testimony, which compares worse to that which prevailed when the last two witnesses three and four for the State gave evidence,” Maumela said.

The previous two witnesses are Meyiwa’s friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Twala.

“In the result, the court makes the following order: live broadcast of the image of the witness, that is witness number one, will not be permitted. Members of the electronic media are permitted to live broadcast the testimony of witness number one by means of an audio. The prohibition of images of witness number one while she testifies shall remain in place until the finalisation of this case,” the judge ruled.

Five men, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifokuhle Ntuli, are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as possession of ammunition.

They have all pleaded not guilty.

TUMBUKA PEOPLE WILL NEVER TELL YOU HOW FAR YOU REALLY ARE FROM YOUR DESTINATION

UNTOLD STORIES OF EASTERN PROVINCE:

TUMBUKA PEOPLE WILL NEVER TELL YOU HOW FAR YOU REALLY ARE FROM YOUR DESTINATION 😂

The Tumbuka people, an ethnic group primarily inhabiting the eastern part of Zambia and northern Malawi, possess a unique cultural trait deeply rooted in their interactions and communication. They have a distinctive predisposition not to discourage or demotivate others from reaching their desired destinations. This characteristic is manifested through a common practice among the Tumbuka people where they tend to provide optimistic responses, even if the actual distance or time to a particular destination is significantly farther or longer than indicated.

When engaging with a Tumbuka person, it is advisable to avoid directly asking if you are nearing your destination, as the expected response will invariably be “Mwafika kale,” which translates to “You have already arrived” or “You are very close.” Regardless of the actual distance remaining, the Tumbuka people have a cultural inclination to inspire hope and instill a sense of encouragement rather than discouragement.

You will often here things like “Pala Mwajumpha waka muzi uyu mbwenu ndiko kuti mwafika, Mwamuyambuka waka ka dambo bwe kusilya waka” ( Just after this village you will reach your destination, you just need to cross the river then you are there). What you may not know is that you still have a distance to cover.

If you inquire about the distance to your destination from your current location, a Tumbuka person would typically respond by first inquiring about your point of origin. (Imwe Mwafuma Nkhu?) This is because the Tumbuka people often consider the progress made in relation to where a journey began, emphasizing the positive aspect of how far you have already come. Subsequently, they are inclined to inform you that your destination is “just around the corner,” even if it may not be immediately within sight.

This practice reflects the Tumbuka people’s deeply rooted values of hospitality, optimism, and empathy. By responding in such a manner, they aim to foster a positive mindset and maintain a supportive environment for individuals on their journeys, regardless of the challenges they may face or the actual distance remaining. This cultural inclination to provide optimistic responses contributes to the Tumbuka people’s reputation for being warm, encouraging, and considerate toward others.

The motivation behind this cultural practice can be traced back to the Tumbuka people’s traditional belief systems, which emphasize communal support and unity. By offering words of encouragement, the Tumbuka people seek to motivate and uplift individuals, promoting a collective sense of achievement and shared progress. This cultural norm also helps to maintain a positive atmosphere within their communities, reinforcing the belief that every individual’s success is interconnected and should be celebrated.

It is important to note that this cultural practice should be understood within its specific context and not be misconstrued as misleading or dishonest. The Tumbuka people’s intention is not to deceive or provide inaccurate information; rather, their aim is to offer support, maintain a positive outlook, and foster a sense of community solidarity.

So remember next time you are in the Tumbuka land heading somewhere, ask not how far you are, just ask if you are still on the correct route

Accolades abroad discontent at home? This is my view- Laura Miti

By Laura Miti

Accolades abroad discontent at home? This is my view:

To evaluate the HH presidency, one has to divide it into two distinct parts.

1. How is he doing in fixing the vehicle whose engine was almost knocked by the PF?

2. How is he doing on issues that have nothing to do with getting our broken down vehicle back on the road?

Another 2 questions:

3. If he had been handed a runner or at least a car whose issues were 4 punctured tyres and a need for wheel alignment, how would he be doing?

My sense is that, no matter how much we say we do not want to hear this anymore, it is terribly flawed analysis to not face the fact that the difficulties Zambians are facing, and that are taking up a lot of the President’s time, are largely, if not all, the result of the stunning mess PF left behind.

We might as well be coming out of a war: an empty Treasury, a mountain of debt which was mostly stolen by powerholders, the said debt whose repayment takes up so much money it’s a miracle we still have services, a corrupt civil service, historical corruption that people want addressed, absolute lawlessness etc etc ad infinitum.

So, what has this President done about that mess?

There is an astounding return to normalcy, given what a violent, lawless mad house we had become.

We have made progress on debt restructuring talks – slow though they maybe. Impressive is that the restructuring is not being held back by our total financial indiscipline, like it was before. The Zambian government has done an excellent job in getting a handle on our fiscus. There is nothing more required of us. What is delaying the restructuring is no longer in our hands. Our creditors agree with each other on terms.

Next question is what has President Hichilema’s government done on matters not related to mopping a floor flooded by others:

1. Introduced free education.

2. Increased CDF.

3. Overseeing a CDF that is disbursed to all constituencies at the same time😮.

4. Delivered transparent recruitment of teachers and nurses.

5. Introduced a Tantameni that went to Private school.

One that does not steal public resources but still puts money in the economy – NAPSA partial withdraw.

6.The return of meal allowances though that is probably part of question 1.

7. Social cash transfer is being paid to with no drama.

8. For the first time in years, expenditure mirrors the budget appropriated by Parliament – impossible to overstate what a change that is.

8. All information on what is happening in our finances is on the MOF website. ALL of it!

9. Been firm with his caders.

10. Regained Zambia’s international respect.

11. Brought back decorum to the presidency.

What are his weaknesses and failures?

1. Some eyebrow raising appointments.

2. Refusal to fire when he must.

3. Failure to make the Electoral Commission non-political.

4. Last year’s disaster of a farming season on the input front.

5. Wobbly corruption cases.

On the balance of things, this a President whose ahievements thus far, far outweigh his weaknesses. The truth, though, is we citizens are free to be unhappy and expect heaven. It’s a democracy.

What I cannot wrap my head around is that we allow the PF to go from radio station to radio station to whine, probably buying airtime with money stolen from us.

We let them, that did the defecating all over our floor, to lead us in complaining that someone else is not cleaning their piles of excreta which are stinking up citizen nostrils, fast enough.

Come on people!

PF commander Muchemwa got money from Inter City shops, bus owners by force, testifies ex Town Clerk

PF commander Muchemwa got money from Inter City shops, bus owners by force, testifies ex Town Clerk

FORMER Lusaka town clerk Alex Mwansa has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Court that notorious PF commander Francis Muchemwa would harass bus owners at Lusaka’s Inter City Bus Terminus and compel them to pay levies amounting to K20,000 and K50,000.

He said those who could not manage to surrender colossal sums of money to Muchemwa, who worked under the umbrella of PF, were whipped and forced to vacate the bus terminus.

Mwansa, who narrated before chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili on how the accused terrorised shop and bus owners, said when he assumed office, he was told not to frustrate the dual system of revenue collection in markets and bus stations between the Lusaka City Council and the PF.

“I requested if there was an agreement between the council and the PF branch. I was informed that there was no partnership agreement between the council and the PF. I established that the PF branch had entrenched itself at Inter City Bus Terminus,” Mwansa said.

“On the part of the PF branch, they were collecting from structures, some within the station, outside the station and wheelbarrow pushers, and also new buses introduced to the station would be charged”.

He indicated that in order to maintain order, he proposed for the introduction of a revenue parking management system but members of the PF branch at Inter City objected.

“The idea was to introduce the cashless revenue collection management system where a council cashier and PF branch were not going to handle cash. We reached a stalemate and a meeting was convened at State House chaired by Mulenga Sata, as mayor of Lusaka by then. This was in 2014,” Mwansa explained.

“In attendance were officials from the PF branch namely Mr Gowa, popularly known as Commander 1. There was also Innocent Kalimanshi, the station manager, and Mr Francis Muchemwa. We failed to reach a compromise and the system was frustrated.”

He said Kalimanshi, Gowa, Muchemwa and others were the leaders of a vicious Inter City bus terminus battalion who collected money, on behalf of the party.

“Mr Gowa was Commander One, Muchemwa was three and Kalimanshi was second in command. In 2014, Kalimanshi was expelled from the station and Francis Muchemwa took over as commander two. These three commanders were in charge of security at Inter City, apart from the council security,” Mwansa said.

He told the Court that the PF branch had more powers and overwhelmed the police.

“In terms of employment, we (LCC) would be availed with the list of recommended staff to be employed from the PF party,” Mwansa said.

He contended that revenue collection was not satisfactory during Muchemwa’s reign but after his party was rejected by 2.8 million voters in the August 2021 elections, there was a positive trajectory in revenue collection after the PF branch was shut down.

“The first quarter of 2022, there was much improvement in revenue collection and business environment, in terms of improved sanity,” said Mwansa

At this point, Muchemwa’s lawyer Joseph Chirwa requested that the matter be adjourned to Friday so that he could prepare for cross-examination.

Magistrate Chibwili adjourned the matter to May 19.

The once-feared so-called PF Commander two is facing six counts of possessing suspicious property worth over K12 million, two counts of tax evasion, one count of failing to comply with the provisions of the tax income Act and obtaining money through pecuniary advantages.

Lie about HH meeting with judges was meant to defend democracy – Nakacinda

Lie about HH meeting with judges was meant to defend democracy – Nakacinda

PF information and publicity chairperson Raphael Nakacinda says his remarks about President Hakainde Hichilema having dark corner meetings with judges was to defend democracy and prevent the country from “reverting to autocracy”.

Nakacinda has been indicted on a repealed law of defamation of the President.

On December 13, 2021 Nakacinda with intent to bring President Hichilema into hatred, ridicule and contempt caused the publication of defamatory matter when he alleged that the Head of State was summoning judges at his residence to coerce them into promoting totalitarian rule.

Opening his defence before magistrate Irene Wishimanga this morning, Nakacinda could to not cast light on his claims against the Head of State but instead chose to go round circles explaining why he always has a binoculars slinging on his neck.

He said after President Hichilema assumed office on August 26, 2021 he launched “Operation Binoculars” to zoom the UPND’s faults in governing the country so that he can censure relevant authorities and they would react to his sentiments.

“In order to offer checks and balances, I needed to symoblycally carry a gadget I was going to watch every step and action our colleagues in government make and that if their actions and steps are inimical to the interest of the Zambian people in so far as upholding the democratic tenets is concerned we would fore to the Zambian people to be aware, as Zambians are the final authority in extending a mandate whenever there is an election,” Nakacinda explained.

“When I come across information I speak to it. I expect those in government to respond by clarifying, confirming or deny if the information is not correct.”

The binoculars-carrying politician claimed that the State and its witnesses among them UPND Kankoyo member of parliament Heartson Mabeta distorted his utterances that the Head of State had begun summoning judges to his home.

“They do not depict what I was saying and the full context of what I was communicating. That is an excerpt of the totality of what I said even then the way it is couched suggests that I was saying that the President has met judges,”Nakacinda clarified.

“The information I was disseminating speaks to the effect that there is intention to start summoning judges for purposes of advancing an agenda to take us back to a one party state.”

He said as a member of the opposition PF he is clothed with the duty to oppose any attempts to go against the decision of many Zambians to introduce a multi-party State in 1990.

“In pronouncing myself on that day, it was in defence of democracy,” said Nakacinda.

He indicated that on December 14, 2021 Himself and former presidential spokesperson Anthony Bwalya featured on Hot FM‘s breakfast show were Bwalya refuted his assertions that the Head of State was meddling in the affairs of the judiciary, as government does not engage in any activities that would compromise the Judiciary or undermine democracy.

“We will not relent as opposition or myself to speak out on issues we deem inimical to the rule of law, the principle of the separation of power between the executive, judiciary and legislature,” said Nakacinda.

At this point the accused’s lawyer Jonas Zimba requested for an adjournment so that he could produce sound bites of Nakacinda’s interview on Hot FM.

Magistrate Wishimanga reluctantly adjourned the matter to May 31 and cautioned the defense against going to court unprepared.

UPND COMMITED TO FIGHT CADRELISM -ANDERSON BANDA

United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Youth Chairperson Anderson Banda says New dawn administration is keen to combat all forms of Negative cadrelism in the country.

Speaking today when he featured on UNZA radio Lusaka star, Banda said that he will not sit and watch markets and bus stations become a war zone like it was in the PF administration.

Banda said that UPND is a party on peace, love and Unity a foundation that has bonded members into a family.

He further added that the party will not allow few individuals and any other youths from the opposition to ruin the peace this country has enjoyed for the past one and half years.

Mr Banda has strongly condemned mushrooming of pockets of cadres taking handouts from people along freedom way.

The Youth Chairperson has appealed to all traders and drivers not to entertain such characters as that will help the trend to grow.

He has called upon law enforcers and the council to up their game and deal with individuals that are standing against presidential order.

Therefore, as a youth leader, I promise that UPND will not entertain cadres in trading places” said Banda.

Zimbabwe devalues its Dollar to try and stabilize currency in freefall

Zimbabwe’s currency weakened almost 14% in the weekly central bank auction, just days after Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube called for changes to how the foreign-exchange market is managed.

The devaluation is the latest policy move to stabilize the local currency. While the weekly auction has been used to set the interbank rate at which businesses are meant to price their goods, it’s been criticized as overly controlled.

The currency on Tuesday sold for 1,404 Zimbabwe dollars per US dollar compared with 1,212 a week ago. That extends the decline this year to 53%. It brings the value closer to the parallel market price of about 2,300 per greenback, according to ZimPriceCheck.com, a website that monitors official and unofficial exchange rates.

The gap between the official and black market has distorted pricing in the economy that’s fueled inflation and prompted a benchmark interest rate of 140% to contain costs.

The currency’s sharp double-digit decline on Tuesday is to help the formal exchange rate “catch up” to the black market, according to Shelton Sibanda, the chief investment officer at Imara Asset Management, the country’s oldest brokerage.

“I expect the formal rate to be depreciated further,” he said by text message on Wednesday. “If the central bank is really committed to a market determined rate, they should allow the daily willing-buyer willing-seller market to move significantly.”

The “managing” of the exchange rate had proved disastrous for local companies forced to surrender 15% of their foreign-exchange earnings at a discounted rate under the previous rules set by the central bank, according to Lloyd Mlotshwa, the head of research at the Harare-based IH Securities.

“While a parallel rate may always exist, the discount to the official rate should not exceed 10%,” said Mlotshwa. “At these levels, over time, we believe private-sector confidence can grow and efficiencies on the forex supply side can improve.”

The International Monetary Fund urged authorities to liberalize the exchange rate to help shore up the currency, instead of using the gold-backed digital money the government introduced last week.

“The foreign-exchange auction system will be further fine-tuned and will now auction a pre-announced envelope,” Ncube in an emailed statement on May 11. The central bank auctioned $14 million of foreign exchange on Tuesday. It plans to sell $15 million at next week’s sale.

The improved functionality of the system is expected to “gradually close the gap between the parallel and official rates,” according to Persistence Gwanyanya, a member of the central bank’s monetary policy committee.

HH who ‘secretly talks’ to ECL versus HH the hired cat that catches Zambian rats: A Summary Reflection on the Presidential Press Briefing- Chris Zumani

HH who ‘secretly talks’ to ECL versus HH, the hired cat that catches Zambian rats: A Summary Reflection on the Presidential Press Briefing for 19th May, 2023

By Dr Chris Zumani Zimba

After closely watching the Press Briefing by our Republican President, HH, l carefully picked the following issues:

1. He repeatedly said Zambians must like him because he is “the good cat that catches rats in the house”;

2. “ You may not like me, but l am the cat that catches the rats; you need me, don’t focus on the color of the cat whether blue, orange, white or black as long as it catches the rats”, he said;

3. To start with, l must commend our President (the cat) for creating time to address Zambians through the media; yes, a good cat must report to its hosts and update them on how many rats it has killed so far👏;

4. At this Press Briefing, our journalists openly confirmed that the Zambian cat talks too much and enjoys traveling in other houses around the village and does less work;

5. To me, this was honest, patriotic and courageous feedback for the Zambian cat to know and take note; free and fair performance appraisal for the hired cat;

6. The hosts and villagers were simply saying the cat is not catching enough rats as expected and the rats are now multiplying and tripling too fast and destroying house treasures and ornaments;

7. If the cat continues to believe that catching 2 or 3 rats per month is good job while the host want a cat that catches 2 to 5 rats per day since the house has thousands of rats, the cat risks eviction soon or later;

8. While the cat was proudly hired by the host to fix the rat problem, the cat must know that it is not the first nor the last to work in this house. Six other cats have worked here;

9. And it is important for cat to know this house has too many rats and previous hired cats 🐈 were killing rats at some supersonic speed. Some previous cats are still celebrated in this house for the job while done in comparison to the new cat;

10. Today, these hosts want the new cat to catch and kill all the rats in the health sector because Zambians are dying from too many rat bites, it’s a true crisis;

11. How many rats has the new hired Zambian cat killed in our hospitals and clinics so far? While the new cat could have employed doctors and nurses, there are no medicines to treat people and save their lives;

12. In the past, Zambians had hired cats who performed tremendously well in the health sector including building hospitals and clinics almost in a every district;

13. In the education sector, the new cat has done very well by killing many known rats such as abolishing school fees and doubling enrollment rates. Here, the new cat has worked very well. Just like decentralization policy is super on point although with some teething problems👌;

14. But the new cat must never celebrate merely visiting UNZA or CBU as any meaningful achievement at his level. The previous cats built UNZA, CBU, Hone, Mulungushi, Levy, Makasa, etc but never boasted in the house. The new cat is not the first one to introduce meal allowances at universities;

15. While the 20% partial NAPSA withdrawal is commendable, our new cat must know that this policy has backfired in South Africa;

16. In SA, there is now more poverty and vulnerability among such people than before as many merely danced the money and now curse the government;

17. While many Zambians want HH and ECL to openly meet, talk and reconcile as well as unity the country, our good cat missed to catch the rat and was talking about their ‘secret talks’ which happened before the birth of Jesus Christ. The hosts want true political reconciliation, dialogue and unity Your Excellency!

18. In this house called Zambia, the hired cat must be reminded that there are thousands and millions of rats waiting for its services; some rats are so big, some so deadly and indeed some are viciously dangerous;

19. In the mining sector, the cat has done zero killings of those big and fat rats. The KCM, Mopani issues and the big rats of tax holidays around mining investors are so annoying to everyone and may force the affected hosts to chase the cat in 2026;

20. Did the new Zambian cat say something on the flying of gay and lesbian flags by EU, US, Sweden, Finland, Germany, etc this week to celebrate homosexual day?

21. If our hired new cat missed this Western offensive and deadly rat, then the Zambian cat is in trouble and its days will be numbered in the house. The hosts want this rat caught and killed at once;

22. Generally, l have an impression that the cat 🐈‍⬛ does not understand the expectations of the hosts although the cat over promised to the hosts during job interviews and when entering the house;

23. So, the cat has forgotten that while it is catching rats, the rate at which it is doing the job is both worrisome and annoying to the hosts based on expectations;

24. Another problem is that, this specific cat seem to be liked and praised more by neighbors in the UK, US and France while being highly criticized by its hosts in Zambia for underperformance;

25. And the survival of the new cat in this house depends on the happiness and appraisal of Zambian hosts and has little or nothing to do with far neighbors overseas;

26. While 2026 seem far, our hired new cat must be reminded that the host is religiously monitoring and evaluating its performance without patience;

27. Next time, our hired cat must be informed that Zambians are not interested in graphs, statistics and mathematical analysis of GDP and inflation rates; that’s not the big rat they want the cat to kill in the house;

28. The main deadly rats the host want to be brutally caught and urgently killed by the cat is high cost of living, looming starvation and hunger, high fuel costs, high ZESCO and water bills, high dollar and Kwacha rates, high prices of mealie meal, maize, fertilizer and less circulation of money in the economy;

29. Our hired cat must know that IMF will not be the only and main solution to our debt crisis and economic malaise, it is a big hole the US and Europeans have made to trap and kill our cat and it’s hosts economically;

30. Therefore, let’s all remind and help our new hired cat to catch the most dangerous and wanted rat; don’t put rat killer poison for now because we have hired a new cat;

31. Look, getting bigger shares in the mines and levying the right taxes on our minerals and underground mining resources must be a policy position our hired cat must prioritize to catch and kill most rates; and

32. Zambians hired this cat to catch and root out these rats each day as they are in thousands and millions in the house. And the cat must know that its hosts called voters are so slippery, highly moody and dangerously unreliable.

He said the fact that the UPND government was offering K280 for a 50kg bag of maize from K180 last season was an indication that there was insufficient maize in the country.

The opposition leader says late delivery of fertilizer whose quality was also questionable could not assure Zambians of increased production this season

And the former ruling Party is said to be getting set for its convention to elect its Party President soon.

Leader of the opposition in Parliament and one of the Presidential aspirants Brain Mundubile assured party members in Northern Province when he addressed the matter on 4 radio stations on Wednesday night

Mr. Mundubile explained that the PF could not to go ahead with the convention under its current party constitution which was going to defranchise a number of candidates but had decided to amend it.

He said the process had almost been completed and that the convention would be called soon.

He also said the former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu who was being persecuted had infact quit active politics and was waiting to handover to the Party leader who would be elected.

Edgar Lungu and I talk, be known to you but what he says in public is different- HH

Lungu harassment claims anger Hichilema

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema this afternoon showed glimpses of anger as he responded to accusations that he was harassing his predecessor Edgar Lungu.

The President said he had no intention of harassing anyone, pointing out that despite all the harassment he and other UPND members were subjected to during their opposition days, he ordered his supporters not to take revenge after being declared winner of August 2021 vote.

During a press conference at State House this morning, President Hichilema denied harassing Lungu, saying the former Head of State was living peacefully and was even freely jogging on public roads.

The President asked if anyone had seen pangas (machetes) being sharpened on roads from the time he became Head of State.

“My brother is free. If there is anyone tampering with his freedom, I will be the first one to step in to protect him…,” President Hichilema said.

Despite the massive defeat at the 2021 polls, Lungu is scheming to contest the 2026 general election as PF presidential candidate after his associates convinced him that he was the only one capable of defeating President Hichilema, if an election came even today.

Since then, Lungu has been making strategic public appearances and calculated social media posts to win support.

During his seven-year reign of terror, Lungu had at his disposal ruthless party thugs whose job description was to distribute skull-cracking and face-deforming beatings to dissidents and other citizens who did not approve of his style of governance.

Last month, Lungu’s personal barber Shebby Chilekwa was even convicted and jailed for shooting dead a UPND supporter during a 2019 by-election in Kaoma.

But President Hichilema said Lungu’s manoeuvres were against the law.

“It’s a legal issue! You cannot be in retirement and and yet you are in politics, the law cannot allow that,” President Hichilema pointed out.

“You cannot be in politics and be retired and receiving retirement benefits, which is anchored on law that says you must retire.”

President Hichilema said the law was very clear that when a former president retires, they must not stay in politics and if they are to receive their emouluments, based on the law.

The President also said it was not that Lungu did not have State security and directed secretary to the Cabinet to issue a clarification statement about how many police officers the former Head of State was entitled to.

President Hichilema appealed to citizens to be fair and not accuse him of harassing Lungu.

“I have no intentions to do that. I was never brought up like that,” he said.

“To claim that HH is harassing a family is not true, Frank [Mutubila]. You know sometimes [as] citizens, we must be fair to each other sometimes. We must analyse things in a fair and objective manner. Between the two of us, who harassed who? Let’s be direct now; between my colleague ECL and HH, who harassed who,” President Hichilema asked.

He said if Lungu was living peacefully and that if he was being harrassed, he would have not been jogging on public roads.

“Maybe what people are having challenges is accepting that I am not harassing anybody who harassed me,” the President said.

President Hichilema said he was available to talk and was speaking to Lungu in the background but wondered why his predecessor had been claiming there was no communication between the two.

“I don’t want to reveal many things here because I am responsible. My colleague and I talk, be known to you but what he says in public is different…” said President Hichilema.

“So, how do you deal with such a situation? Someone is not telling the truth there….”

There is abnormality in the nation and that is what is hurting them, no one is getting illegal money, people are working hard to get what they deserve. And I will put my foot down to never allow such a thing to ever happen again,” said President Hichilema.

After the presser, President Hichilema interacted with journalists and posed for photos with guests at State House.

HH has challenged the opposition to provide alternative solutions to the Tangible achievements of the New Dawn Govt

0

President Hakainde Hichilema has challenged the opposition to provide alternative solutions to the tangible achievements of the New Dawn Government.

President Hichilema on Thursday held a Press Conference at State House in Lusaka at which he addressed issues pertaining to law and order, the economy, cost of living, healthcare, mining, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and agriculture.

The Head of State said the UPND Government acknowledges the criticism from opposition political parties.

“While we acknowledge the criticism from our colleagues in the opposition, we challenge them to provide alternative solutions to the tangible benefits we have delivered, such as eliminating lawlessness and violence, meal allowances for students, 100% allowances for our armed forces in peacekeeping missions abroad, NAPSA partial withdrawals, marketeer loans, social cash transfers, the increased CDF and the employment of over 41,000 Healthcare workers and Teachers respectively, among many other achievements,” President Hichilema said.

He said ensuring stability by addressing lawlessness in public places and intensifying the fight against corruption were top on the agenda as UPND assumed office.

“We held a lively press briefing to fulfill our commitment of regularly engaging with fellow citizens through the media, to discuss matters affecting our nation in various aspects. During the briefing, we reviewed our progress since assuming government leadership, focusing on law and order, the economy, cost of living, healthcare, mining, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and agriculture, among other issues. When we assumed government, our top priority was to ensure stability by addressing lawlessness in public places, intensifying the fight against corruption, and establishing the Economic and Financial Crimes Court. We also increased financial support to the judicial system. Recognizing that law and order is fundamental to our economic growth agenda, we have achieved significant improvements in this area,” President Hichilema said.

He added that the Government was aware of the hardships citizens are facing due to the restoration of a collapsed economy.

“Moving forward, we pursued our economic agenda by implementing measures to reduce inflation and stabilize interest and exchange rates. In collaboration with our international partners, we are making progress in the debt restructuring process. We are aware of the hardships our citizens are facing due to the restoration of a collapsed economy. To alleviate these challenges, we have increased social cash transfers, implemented free education for all, introduced partial withdrawals from the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA), reinstated meal allowances for students in public universities, and ensured equitable distribution of enhanced CDF funds to all constituencies in Zambia. We are committed to continuing our engagement with you, our citizens, through future media conferences,” he said.

Meanwhile, the opposition Citizens First (CF) has announced that it will be holding a press briefing to be addressed by party president Mr. Harry Kalaba at the party Secretariat in Lusaka’s Woodlands area.

The theme of the briefing is ; “Enough of the Rhetoric,Here’s the Workable Alternative.”

“The Citizens First is inviting your media house to a presser to be addressed by party president Mr. Harry Kalaba to be held at the party Secretariat in Lusaka’s Woodlands area tomorrow, Friday, 19th May,2023. Time: 09:00 hrs. The theme of the briefing is ; “Enough of the Rhetoric,Here’s the Workable Alternative.” Members of the press are encouraged to observe time,” the CF Media Team announced.

UPND’s False Accomplishments- CHISHALA KATEKA

UPND’s False Accomplishments – “We’ve said it, we’ve done it.” Promises Kept, yet outcomes neglected.

18 May 2023

In the world of politics, promises are the currency that buys votes and shapes public opinion. Once in power, political parties stay afloat on the sea of popularity by touting how many promises have been kept.

It is no surprise that the UPND, adept at making lofty commitments during election campaigns, are prematurely basking in their own glory and touting their supposed achievements. In President Hakainde’s words at his press conference today, “We’ve said it, we’ve done it.”…Predictably, this will now become the hit song of his praise singers.

However, before we are misled by this song, let us remind the UPND that it is not the delivery of promises but the resulting outcomes that truly matter. In the case of the UPND Government, their claims of achievements are nothing more than smoke and mirrors, creating a false impression that the people must applaud their hard work in the short period of time they have been in government.

In reality, despite these so called ‘We’ve said it we’ve done it’ achievements, tangible outcomes for the overall quality of life of Zambian citizens are nowhere to be seen.

It seems that we may have to keep reminding the UPND the harsh truth that promises, even when kept, are not outcomes. For one, a common thread that runs through all these so-called achievements is that they have real, increased and massive requirements on the treasury while we hear no corresponding achievements in the increase of government revenues – a very critical element in economic health of the nation.

So how sustainable are these ‘achievements’ in the long run? Without any visible strategy or plan to replenish the treasury, the UPND is simply burdening the treasury and ultimately putting the current and future financial stability of the nation at risk. Fellow citizens, beware, while UPND may be patting itself on the back, it is more likely setting off a time-bomb whose explosion will reverberate in every sphere of life for generations to come.

We have come to understand, that amidst their claims of success, the UPND conveniently ignores the need for informing the citizenry with factual data-backed assessments and outcomes of their achievements. They keep echoing that promises have been kept, but conveniently sidestep the critical question of whether economic and social benefits are actually being realized. Without data backed assessments of the CDF, Free Education, Partial Pension Withdrawals and so on, we keep hearing “we’ve said it, we’ve done it”, but we will not be able to determine if the desired economic and social benefits are being realized. Can we say that these promises ‘delivered’ have resulted in an improved welfare for Zambians? There is a lack of effect on the everyday lives of ordinary people.

So, fellow citizens, continue questioning these self-proclaimed achievements. Let’s demand concrete evidence of positive outcomes on the welfare of the ordinary Zambian rather than being dazzled by empty rhetoric. In the end, it’s not about how many promises are ticked off on a list; it’s about the real impact on our everyday lives that matters.

President HH Secures US$8.3 Billion in FDI Pledges, Signals Economic Success for Zambia

0

President Hakainde Hichilema announced today at a press briefing held at State House that the Zambian government has successfully secured Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) pledges amounting to a staggering US$8.3 billion in the first quarter of this year. This remarkable achievement surpasses the FDI recorded in both 2021 and 2022, which stood at US$3.2 billion and US$6.9 billion, respectively.

President Hichilema attributed this significant increase in FDI pledges to the successful implementation of the government’s policy on economic diplomacy. He emphasized the importance of Zambians understanding the purpose of his and his Cabinet members’ travels, as these visits play a crucial role in attracting investments and strengthening the country’s economic prospects.

During the press briefing, President Hichilema also addressed the economic challenges faced by Zambian citizens due to the country’s debt distress. He assured the public that the government would provide support to alleviate the burdens imposed by the high cost of living. The president emphasized that his administration is diligently working to improve the situation and mentioned specific measures being taken, such as the introduction of free education to alleviate school fees expenses.

Furthermore, President Hichilema proudly announced his selection to participate in a global forum aimed at discussing mechanisms to establish low-interest rates on financing for African countries and the private sector. This recognition demonstrates Zambia’s growing international influence and the president’s commitment to advocating for favorable financial conditions that will benefit not only his country but the broader African continent.

The president’s remarks regarding the substantial increase in FDI pledges reflect a positive sentiment about Zambia’s economic prospects under the new administration. The government’s policy on economic diplomacy appears to be yielding fruitful results, attracting a substantial influx of foreign investment. This influx is expected to drive economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance the living standards of Zambian citizens.

President Hichilema’s acknowledgement of the economic challenges faced by the population demonstrates his administration’s commitment to addressing these issues promptly. By implementing measures such as free education, the government aims to alleviate the financial burden on families and create an environment conducive to social and economic development.

The president’s inclusion in the global forum on low-interest financing for African countries and the private sector is a testament to his international recognition and credibility. This participation will provide an opportunity for Zambia to contribute to the discourse on financial mechanisms that can stimulate economic growth across the continent. President Hichilema’s involvement signifies Zambia’s active engagement in international forums and its commitment to promoting the economic interests of African nations.

HH DISSAPOINTS LOCAL NGO

…. for failing to provide a clear road map leading to the revamping of the mining sector

Lusaka… Friday May 19, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

A local Non Governmental Organization has expressed dissapointment that President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday failed to provide a clear road map leading to the revamping of the mining sector.

Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) says it was expecting the Head of State to be bold and give the nation how his administration will rescue the people of Copperbelt from the perpetual sufferings they have been subjected to.

Organization Executive Director Samuel Banda says the President should not abandon the people of the Copperbelt by failing to amicably resolve issues at Konkola Copper Mines Plc and Mopani Copper Mines.

“We are profoundly disappointed that President Hakainde Hichilema could not give a categorical, clear road map on KCM/Vedanta Resources and Mopani issues. The President only stated that they are working hard towards KCM issue and resolving the issues at Mopani without giving a road map. Now, we are aware that government is in talks with Vedanta Resources but we are wondering how long will the negotiations take. It’s more than one year and we know that the talks are outside court,” he said.

“We believe that normal negotiations can’t take this long time. We expected the President to at least give a time frame as when government will resolve this issue. Remember that the government through the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon Paul Kabuswe indicated that they will resolve these issues in the first quarter of 2023.”

He said this is the more reason why the stakeholders are worried as to why the President couldn’t build on that assurance of resolving the issues in the first quarter of 2023.

“It is very sad that the people of the Copperbelt are suffering, they don’t have employment opportunities, they don’t have business opportunities because of Jon functionality of the two mines. Our appeal to the President is that resolve these issues as a matter of urgency. These delays to make decisions are making the people to loose confidence in you and your leadership,” he emphasized.

“The people are now concluding that the President is not committed to resolve these issues. Remember the assurances which he has been giving together with his Minister of Mines without action. Now we can conclude that these assurances have been rhetoric, which is very unfortunate.”

He since appealed to the Head of State to give a clear road map and time frame as to when these issues will be resolved.
