Scientists may have solved mystery behind Egypt’s pyramids

Scientists believe they may have solved the mystery of how 31 pyramids, including the world-famous Giza complex, were built in Egypt more than 4,000 years ago.

A research team from the University of North Carolina Wilmington has discovered that the pyramids are likely to have been built along a long-lost, ancient branch of the River Nile – which is now hidden under desert and farmland.

For many years, archaeologists have thought that ancient Egyptians must have used a nearby waterway to transport materials such as the stone blocks needed to build the pyramids on the river.

But up until now, “nobody was certain of the location, the shape, the size or proximity of this mega waterway to the site of the actual pyramids”, according to one of the study’s authors, Prof Eman Ghoneim.

In a cross-continental effort, the group of researchers used radar satellite imagery, historical maps, geophysical surveys, and sediment coring (a technique used by archaeologists to recover evidence from samples) to map the river branch – which they believe was buried by a major drought and sandstorms thousands of years ago.

The team were able to “penetrate the sand surface and produce images of hidden features” by using the radar technology, the study, published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, said.

Among those features were “buried rivers and ancient structures” running at the foothills of where the “vast majority of the Ancient Egyptian pyramids lie,” Prof Ghoneim said.

Speaking to the BBC, one of the study’s co-authors, Dr. Suzanne Onstine, said “locating the actual [river] branch and having the data that shows there was a waterway that could be used for the transportation of heavier blocks, equipment, people, everything, really helps us explain pyramid construction”.

The team found that the river branch – named the Ahramat branch, with “ahramat” meaning pyramids in Arabic – was roughly 64km (39 miles) long and between 200-700m (656-2,296 ft) wide.

And it bordered 31 pyramids, which were built between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago.

The discovery of this extinct river branch helps explain the high pyramid density between Giza and Lisht (the site of Middle Kingdom burials), in what is now an inhospitable area of the Saharan desert.

The river branch’s proximity to the pyramid complexes suggests that it was “active and operational during the construction phase of these pyramids”, the paper said.

Dr Onstine explained that ancient Egyptians could “use the river’s energy to carry these heavy blocks, rather than human labour,” adding, “it’s just a lot less effort”.

The River Nile was the lifeline of Ancient Egypt – and remains so to this day.

Throwing cash in the air – Nigeria’s wedding dilemma

A fundamental part of a wedding celebration for many Nigerians is under threat.

The moment is always eagerly anticipated.

The bride and groom start dancing and the guests step forward brandishing large wads of cash.

As the band plays, they start flinging – or, as it is referred to here, “spraying” – the money, one note at a time, in the air and at the happy couple.

The cash spins to the ground and once scooped up, it can be used by the newlyweds to buy a present or towards paying for the party.

“I can’t imagine attending an event and not spraying money. It will look as if you don’t appreciate and love those celebrating,” one guest at a recent wedding in the northern Nigerian city of Kano tells the BBC.

The groom at that wedding, who would only talk to the BBC on condition of anonymity as he now fears getting into trouble, says he continues to look at the videos and pictures of the spraying “because I loved it”.

The problem is that the authorities have started to crack down on spraying money. Some prominent personalities have even been sent to prison.

It may appear to be an ostentatious yet essentially innocuous act but in Nigeria this much-loved institution is a crime: the abuse of the country’s currency, the naira.

The 2007 Central Bank of Nigeria Act is unambiguous. “For the avoidance of doubt,” it says, “spraying of, dancing or [marching] on the naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse”.

The punishment is no less than six months in prison or a 50,000 naira fine ($36; £29), or both. The fine was set in 2007 and the figure has not been adjusted for inflation.

On the statute books for 17 years, this clause was largely ignored until recently when the elite anti-crime agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said it was leading a drive against “all forms of naira abuse”.

Officials have said that spraying naira shows a lack of respect to one of the country’s most important symbols.

Some analysts say that the recently appointed EFCC boss, Ola Olukoyede, has been trying to make a name for himself through this clampdown.

In February, actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was sentenced to six months for spraying and stepping on new naira notes.

Last month, one of Nigeria’s most popular celebrities, a transgender woman known as Bobrisky pleaded guilty to four counts of abusing the currency and is currently serving her sentence.

Bobrisky was seen in videos spraying notes in the air in a sign of appreciation at various social events.

A short time later socialite and businessman Cubana Chief Priest became the latest high-profile figure to be charged with abusing banknotes. He settled the case out of court.

The agency says 200 people across the country face prosecution, while 24 people have already been convicted.

As a consequence of its sweep, people have been bombarding the EFCC’s social media accounts with videos of people spraying cash, but the agency says it cannot go after everyone.

It is hard to imagine that a practice that goes back decades could be stamped out just like that.

Historian Prof Tijjani Naniya traces Nigerians’ love affair with spraying to the 1940s when he says families saw it as a way of giving financial assistance to a newly married couple.

“At first people didn’t spray notes but the groom would be seated while people would come up to him and put money in his pocket,” he tells the BBC.

“It was their way of helping him… as he begins a new life that comes with expenses.

“It was later that it evolved to spraying while the couple dance. That way the sprayer shows his status as a wealthy person and people compete to become the most recognised by spraying more money.”

The professor says it will be difficult for Nigerians to totally stop the habit but believes the current tough economic situation has already greatly reduced it.

“Spraying notes was all about [showing off] and as the economy nosedived, a lot of people have stopped.”

However, the practice has expanded beyond weddings.

Hadiza Usman, who at a recent birthday celebration was sprayed with money, says she cannot imagine a Nigerian social event without it.

“We grow up seeing our parents spraying notes at events and it has become part of our cultures all over Nigeria,” she says.

At the same time there are some like Usman Idris who have never sprayed and do not like the concept.

“I hate the idea because it gives the illusion that our country is wealthy when in fact there are more poor people around.

“Over the years Islamic clerics have warned against it and fewer Muslims are spraying money at events today.”

Some clerics have described the practice as extravagant and say that giving to charity is a better option. In an effort to discourage spraying, some have said that the sprayed cash will turn into snakes to bite the sprayer in the grave after they die.

Public affairs analyst Sani Bala thinks the current clampdown on naira spraying will not have the desired effect.

“I think for naira spraying to stop totally, the government needs to start from the top because we have seen governors and ministers spraying money with no repercussions at all,” he says.

“Secondly I also feel the timing is wrong as most Nigerians battle with more pressing issues at the moment.”

But there has been a small, though noticeable, shift in behaviour in some places.

Sprayers are now asking for the largesse not to be filmed or photographed, or sometimes more subtly putting money in the pockets of the groom.

While for Nigeria’s super-wealthy elite, there is another option – they can continue to spray dollars, pounds or euros without fear of prosecution, as this law only covers the naira.

Prime minister of Slovakia had more surgery, still serious condition – Deputy PM

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, had another surgery after being shot on Wednesday. He is still in serious condition, according to the country’s deputy prime minister and defense minister.

Fico, who is 59 years old, was attacked while he was saying hello to his supporters after a meeting with the government in the town of Handlova, which used to be a coal mining town. A person who is believed to have attacked someone has been taken into custody by the police.

Miriam Lapunikova, who is in charge of the hospital where Fico is being treated, said that Fico had a special X-ray and is now awake and in stable condition in the ICU. She said he was in really bad shape.

She said the surgery took out dead tissues that were still in Fico’s body.

“I believe we will need a few more days to know for sure which way things are going,” said Robert Kaliniak, the defence minister and deputy prime minister, to the reporters at the hospital.

Still, Kaliniak said that the government is still working.

“The government departments are doing all their jobs, nothing is stopped or paused, the country keeps moving forward,” he told the news. “The condition of the state and the patient is okay and not changing. ”

Fico has been a controversial figure in Slovakia and other places for a long time. Last year, when he came back into power, he supported Russia and opposed America. This made European Union and NATO members worried that he would stop following the pro-Western path for his country, especially concerning Ukraine.

Earlier on Friday, the man who tried to kill Fico was taken home by the police. The local news said it was part of a search for proof.

Markiza, a TV station from Slovakia, aired a video of the suspect being taken to his home in Levice on Friday morning. They also said that the police took a computer and some papers. The police did not say anything.

The police have been told not to share the suspect’s name or any other information about the case with the public. The person who is suspected of a crime will have their case looked at again in court on Saturday at the Specialized Criminal Court in Pezinok, Slovakia, which is near the capital city of Bratislava.

Unconfirmed news says he was a 71-year-old retired person who liked to write poems and might have worked as a security guard at a mall in the southwest of the country.

Government officials on Thursday provided information that was consistent with that description. They said the suspect wasn’t part of any political groups, but the attack was driven by political reasons.

Slovakia’s president wants to have a meeting with all the leaders of the political parties next Tuesday. President Zuzana Caputova, who is leaving her job soon, and the next president, Peter Pellegrini, made a plan to lessen problems between people in the country.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Slovakia supported Ukraine strongly. But when Fico became prime minister again for the fourth time, he stopped sending weapons to Ukraine.

Fico’s government has tried to change public broadcasting. Critics say this would let the government have complete control of public TV and radio. This, along with his plans to change the law to get rid of a special prosecutor who investigates corruption, has made some people concerned that Fico will make Slovakia more like a dictatorship.

Many people have gathered in the capital and across the country of 5. 4 million people to protest against his decisions.

Last month, Fico said on Facebook that he thought the increasing tensions in the country could cause politicians to be killed, and he said the media was making the tensions worse.

Before Fico came back into power last year, many of his friends in politics and business were being looked into by the police, and many of them have been accused of crimes.

He wants to change the penal system by getting rid of the special prosecutor who deals with organized crime, corruption and extremism.

Five people including mayoral candidate shot and killed during a southern Mexico campaign event

A mayoral hopeful and five additional individuals were fatally shot during a rally in the turbulent state of Chiapas, Mexico.

The police said a little girl and mayoral candidate Lucero Lopez Maza were among the six people who were shot and killed on Thursday night. Two more people got hurt, said.

Prosecutors said that there was a fight between armed regular people at a political event.

It was not clear if Lopez Maza was the intended person in the attack, because shootings happen a lot in that area.

The shooting happened at a crossroads in a small town called La Concordia, Chiapas. It’s about 80 miles (125 km) from the border with Guatemala.

The area close to the border of Guatemala is a big route for smuggling drugs and people, and two big drug groups in Mexico are fighting to control that area.

On Sunday, 11 people died in a shooting in a village near La Concordia, Chiapas. The killers killed a whole family and set their bodies on fire.

On Friday, the Roman Catholic Church said that people from a group selling drugs had murdered some people in Chicomuselo because the people living there didn’t want to leave their homes or work for the group.

According to the statement by the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Cristobal de las Casas, some people didn’t want to leave their homes even though criminal gangs were being violent and threatening them to join their group.

The church said that in Chiapas there is a lot of fighting over land and some criminal groups want to keep mining there, which is causing a lot of violence.

It didn’t say which mines the cartels were trying to control, but the accusation is not surprising or unusual in areas of Mexico where cartels are in charge. In 2013, officials in the western state of Michoacan admitted that the Knights Templar cartel had gained control of iron ore mining in the state. They said selling ore to China was one of the cartel’s main ways of making money.

The increase in violence in Chiapas made President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador feel bad when he visited the border state on Friday to meet with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo.

As always, Lopez Obrador doesn’t want to deal with the drug gangs and downplays the issue of violence.

“Some people say Chiapas is in a lot of trouble, but I disagree. The problem is here in this area, and we are going to fix it,” the president said during a press conference in Tapachula, Chiapas.

The killings on Thursday showed that there has been a lot of violence leading up to the July 2 elections in Mexico. About 20 candidates have been killed so far in 2024.

On Friday, the old ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party said that two of the five dismembered bodies found on a street in Acapulco belonged to a candidate for a town council seat in the nearby town of Coyuca de Benitez and his wife.

“We want fairness for this terrible crime,” the group said about the killing of Anibal Zuniga and his wife, Rubi Bravo.

Once again, Lopez Obrador tried to make the violence seem less important and said that people who talk about the killings are just trying to make his government look bad.

“Thankfully, there have been fewer attacks than in previous elections, but there is a lot of sensationalism nowadays. It’s really sad that there are people trying to make money from the deaths and suffering of others,” he said. “This is a time when predators are taking advantage. “

Conditions for the Slovak prime minister are stable

The man who attempted to murder Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been instructed to remain in custody. The Prime Minister is in serious but stable condition after being shot several times.

The prosecutors asked the court to keep the suspect in jail because they were afraid he might run away or commit more crimes.

The police were told not to share the man’s name or other information about the case. Some news reports say he is a 71-year-old retired person who liked to write poems and may have worked as a security guard at a mall in the southwest.

The government officials provided information that was the same as that description. They said the person who did it was not part of any political groups, but the attack was still influenced by politics.

The courthouse in Pezinok, a small town near the capital city of Bratislava, had police officers with helmets and masks and they were carrying guns. Reporters were not allowed to go inside, and they had to stay outside behind a gate.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in serious but stable condition after an attempted assassination. The person accused of the attack is appearing in court for the first time.

Fico had a surgery on Friday to remove dead tissue from his gunshot wounds. The doctors are hopeful for his recovery, but he’s still not well enough to go to a hospital in the capital city, Bratislava. Government ministers gave this information outside University FD Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica, where Fico was brought by a helicopter after the shooting.

“Good things have happened in Banska Bystrica recently because of the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Roosevelt Hospital,” said Defense Minister Robert Kalinak.

Fico, who is 59 years old, was assaulted while he was saying hello to his supporters after a meeting with the government on Wednesday in the town of Handlova, which used to be a coal mining town. The person was grabbed and taken down to the ground, then taken away by the police.

Slovak state media said the man accused of trying to kill Fico appeared in court and Fico’s health update was given at the same time.

The prosecutors wanted the court to keep the suspect in custody in Slovakia.

The police were asked not to tell the public about the man or share other information about the case. Some news reports say he was a 71-year-old retiree who liked to write poetry and possibly worked as a security guard at a mall in the southwest of the country, but this has not been confirmed.

The government told information that was the same as that description. They said the person who did it doesn’t belong to any political groups, but the attack itself was done for political reasons.

The building where trials happen in Pezinok, a small town near Bratislava, had police officers wearing masks and holding guns to protect it. Reporters couldn’t go in and had to stay outside behind a gate.

The police took the suspect to his home in Levice and took away a computer and some papers. This was reported by Markiza, a TV station in Slovakia. The police didn’t say anything.

The police have not said much about the case, so it’s not clear how the suspect got the gun.

In Slovakia, it’s hard to own a gun. People need a good reason and have to take a test.

As a result, Slovakia has very few people owning guns compared to other countries in Europe. According to a group that studies laws in the European Union, this country is ranked 23rd out of 27. The rate of people who own guns is 65 out of 100.

Leaders from around the world have criticized the attack and are standing by Fico and Slovakia.

Fico is a controversial person in Slovakia and other places. Last year, when he came back to power, he had a plan that was in favor of Russia and against America. This made other European Union and NATO members concerned that he might change his country’s support towards Western countries, especially when it comes to Ukraine.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Slovakia was strongly supporting Ukraine. However, when Fico became prime minister for the fourth time, he stopped sending weapons to Ukraine.

Fico’s government has tried to change public broadcasting. Critics say this would give the government complete control of public TV and radio. This, along with his plans to change the rules to remove a special anti-corruption prosecutor, have made people concerned that Fico will take Slovakia in a more controlling direction.

Many people have come together many times in the city and all over the country of 54 million people to show they are against his rules.

Last month, Fico said on Facebook that he thinks the country’s growing tension could cause politicians to get killed, and he thinks the media is making the tension worse.

Before Fico came back into power last year, many of his friends in politics and business were being looked into by the police, and many of them have been accused of crimes.

His plan to change the penal system would get rid of the special prosecutor who handles organized crime, corruption, and extremism cases.

JACK MWIIMBU WARNS EDGAR LUNGU

MWIIMBU WARNS ECL

In a joint press briefing, Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu and Local Government Minister Gary Nkombo addressed concerns surrounding former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s recent activities and interactions with the public.

Minister Mwiimbu began by unequivocally stating that President Lungu’s presidential immunity only extends to matters done or incidental to his presidency, which ended in August 2021. “Any activities outside the law after his term of office ended are subject to the laws of this country and there is no immunity that covers him for those activities,” Mwiimbu emphasized.

The minister went on to remind President Lungu and his fellow opposition leaders that the Public Order Act outlines clear procedures that must be followed before holding any public meeting or procession. “These procedures are designed to ensure public safety and order and they apply to all citizens without exception,” Mwiimbu said, noting that Lungu is well aware of these requirements.

Addressing President Lungu’s recent visit to a Catholic church in Kabwe, Mwiimbu stated that the government is “studying the video and not only what is visible in the video but also considering the unseen events and circumstances that presided it.” He acknowledged that while President Lungu is free to go wherever he pleases, his status as a former head of state requires particular security considerations.

“Wherever he goes he should be provided with security, it will be eminimal to the interest of the nation that harm falls on him,” Mwiimbu said, while also offering a sincere apology to the Catholic Church for the incident.

Local Government Minister Gary Nkombo echoed Mwiimbu’s statements, noting that President Lungu did not follow proper procedures in conducting his procession in Soweto last week, which “caused excitement and in some agitation.” Nkombo emphasized that President Lungu, as a former president, needs to understand that he is not an ordinary citizen.

The joint press briefing aimed to provide clarity on the legal framework surrounding President Lungu’s activities and to emphasize the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law, while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, including former heads of state.

Don’t limit my movements´-EDGAR LUNGU

´Don’t limit my movements´–EDGAR LUNGU
…as former presidents rights are further abused

Smart Eagles-18.05.24, Kabwe

Edgar Lungu, the sixth President of Zambia has cautioned police, working under orders from President Hakainde Hichilema to stop ´limiting his movements´ around the country as if he were a common criminal.

The sixth President of Zambia said instead of wasting money and time limiting his space and freedom, Mr. Hichilema should direct his energy towards fighting escalating, poverty, load shedding and high prices of mealie meal.

Dr. Lungu was speaking in Kabwe, central Zambia about 150kms from Lusaka on Friday after a police man stormed the private parish office of catholic Bishop Clement Mulenga, disrupting a courtesy call he was paying the respected clergy.

“Your job is to stop lawbreakers or people who are planning to break the law not stop me from enjoying my right to move freely,” President Lungu said.”

The former President said, “I came here to pay a courtesy call on the good bishop it´s not your job to bar me your job is to protect me, protect the bishop and others, so that we can meet, talk, and I go my way.”

The police man who seemed bewielded and shaken, speaking to this former commander in chief still insisted that President Lungu had ´no right to pay a courtesy call onto the bishop’ without citing a single law.

The policeman said, “When you were coming from Lusaka, you didn’t inform us to say that you are making a stop in Kabwe or any other place. You need to inform us in advance.”

The sixth President, a qualified lawyer and legislator firmly told the policeman that, “I do not have to inform you by law, who told you that I have to inform you of my movements?”

He said there´s no constitutional requirement compelling a former President to get permission from the state for him to make any movements.
“Sir, please let’s respect our constitution,” said President Lungu, “this is a church not a public rally and I have a right to see my bishop, to pay a courtesy call on my church leaders.”

A large section of civil society in Zambia believe the “democratic space has shrunk” since Mr Hichilemas assumed office almost three years ago in a questionable election.”

The sixth President has also been
banned from travelling abroad to receive specialised medical attention while his retirement package as a former president has been frozen by Mr Hichilema, his successor, shocking many.

In the face of all these mounting abuses, the western diplomatic corp that were loudly condemning the Lungu administration in the run up to the 2021 polls remain silent, ostensibly in cohorts with Mr. Hichilema´s abusive government.

Appoint a new Minister of Foreign Affairs- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Appoint a new Minister of Foreign Affairs

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

On December 26, 2023, KapiriMposhi Member of Parliament, Hon. Stanley Kakubo resigned following a social media frenzy over his alleged mine dealings with a Chinese businessman.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is the second Chief Diplomat of the country after the President, and the two personalities are the most prominent faces and representative of the country.

Foreign ministers are also traditionally responsible for many diplomatic duties, such as hosting foreign world leaders and going on state visits to other countries on behalf of the president.

To this effect, the foreign minister is generally the most well-traveled member of any cabinet.

It is because of that factor that it became clearly inevitable that the scandal that had engulfed Hon. Kakubo would lead to his dismissal and / or cause his resignation even when the matter he was facing was clearly a private business, and a civil transaction gone wrong.

Because of this development, President Hakainde Hichilema appointed the Minister of Justice, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe to act as Foreign Affairs Minister.

It’s been almost six months since the position became vacant and the country still doesn’t have a substantive Minister of Foreign Affairs, a clear disservice to the country and its diplomatic relations.

The principle in international relations is that parties do not deal seriously with non-substantive office bearers.

This is a serious position that is never held in a casual manner for months, as is being witnessed in Zambia.

Further, the current holder, albeit in acting capacity, is not suitable in light of the grave allegations that arose in April 2024.

A woman named Valerie Franco, was allegedly brutally murdered by her husband, Mike Ilishebo.

Ilishebo proceeded to allegedly commit suicide.

Recorded audios emerged where Ilishebo had previously confronted Hon. Mulambo Haimbe about his inappropriate relationship with his wife, a matter that placed Hon.Mulambo at the centre of the subsequent suicide and murder cases of the couple.

To this extent, because of the allegations surrounding those deaths, Haimbe may not, for now, even be suitable to hold the position of Minister of Justice.

Further, the Zambia Police have not held a Coroner’s Inquest, an inquiry that is conducted into the circumstances surrounding a suspicious death.

Clearly, for these reasons, Hon. Haimbe is not suitable to hold the position of Foreign Affairs, because of the weight of that office in Zambia’s international affairs and the very reason that caused Hon. Kakubo to resign.

In the past, these moral issues would be relegated to a space of private affairs, but since the enactment of the new Constitution in 2016, such matters are now constitutional as provided for in Article 8 and 9, which mandates and directs the President of the Republic of Zambia to uphold and lead in promoting national values and principles.

This matter is taken so seriously that the President is directed to report to the nation, once a year, through Parliament, progress he has made in the year in upholding and promoting national values and principles.

Further, it is worrying that up to now, certain key diplomatic posts of ambassadors remain vacant for months, such as Kenya and Russia.

It is therefore imperative, that the President appoints and fills the vacant position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, especially that he has competent and requisite persons among his MPs and Ministers that he can draw and pick from.

CHURCH ELDER CHEATS DEATH ON A SABBATH – CHOMA

CHURCH ELDER CHEATS DEATH ON A SABBATH – CHOMA

A man from Mbabala village in Choma has cheated death after being strangled by angry wife.

Stories circulating are that a Mr. Hamalala Frank, teacher and elder in a named church, today arrived home after disappearing for two good days.

Mr. Hamalala using his accented English greeted his wife, who was outside pounding groundnuts to prepare lunch before going back to church for Bible Study, and went inside to change.

Minutes later, he came back outside and asked his wife why the house was looking like a common dumping site despite it being a sabbath day giving her friend’s house as an example; your friend keeps her house well especially the bedroom despite working on the farm the whole day, he added.

The wife was just quiet and continued to pound the groundnuts moving her lips Trust and Obey her favorite song. The devil in him and the guilt conscience kept on troubling him. He could not just keep quiet.

Your friends who went to Lusaka last year to attend the holy gathering allegedly danced to Abaku Chaume, the wife did not respond. She just gawked at him and continued singing and pounding. He was referring to her women group at church.

Mr. Hamalala wanting attention picked a tiny stone and threw it hitting his wife’s breast. He probably wanted to be romantic but the wife found this to be insulting.

She ran towards him like a real movie star, her wrapper flew away exposing her natural thighs and jumped on him. Because of his Newspaper weight he flipped and went straight to the ground faceup. Before he could get up, the wife with only a short like khaki clothing, sat on him and started slapping him continuously.

It is alleged that elder Hamalala angered his wife more when he said, “BoDorcas, have you forgotten about all the submission teachings and family life lessons?”

Hearing theses words, the wife was angered to kill. With pictures of him with another woman in mind, she blocked his weak right arm and reached for the chicken throat, strangling it until the husband’s eyes went up.

People who were close rushed to rescue the elder but it was too late. His eyes and legs were up. The wife rose and went back to pound groundnuts saying you think I do not know what you do behind my back.

Meanwhile, the husband, who is now at Mapanza mission with his relatives, miraculously came back to life after four hours when many concluded he was dead. And he has reportedly been talking to himself shouting BoAbraham please talk to Jesus, I have repented.

Wynter Kambimba and Father Frank Bwalya ran away from Fred Mmembe due to dictatorial tendencies- Miles  Sampa

ABOUT FRED MMEMBE DICTATORSHIP AT THE SOCIALIST PARTY

By Miles B. Sampa, MP
18.05.2024

The Registrar of Societies should move on the Socialist Party for failure to comply with the dictates of the Zambian constitution which states that all political parties should be democratic and hold periodic internal elections for leaders and office bearers.

This Socialist Party (SP) since its formation some 6 years ago or so has never ever held any internal gathering to elect office bearers or leaders. They have a self imposed leader Mr Fred Mmembe as President and then he appoints willy nilly other individuals like his personal friend Dr Musumali as Secretary General and no other member has ever had a chance to vie for these positions through an election.

If Fred Mmembe cannot show any semblance of democracy in the Socialist party, then morally he should have no space talking about so called ‘democratic space ‘ in the Country because he does not believe in democracy but tinpot dictatorship.

Fred Membe should therefore be the last to give orders to President to remove one leader of PF and replace with another one. In any case which articles of the Zambian or PF constitution avails those powers to an incumbent President to do that to a political party that he is not a member of?

The powers the President of Zambia has are to ensure full adherence by all to dicates of the Zambian constitution. These powers around political parties are vested in his Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwimbu to ensure that all political parties hold periodic internal elections and those that fail to, he also has powers to deregister them.
All his predecessors executed this role very well.

So having held the general conference last year, the PF is guaranteed not to be deregistered in the score atleast next 5 years. As for the SP, nikuno twangala naba HH, otherwise if it was Museveni in Uganda, SP would have long been deregistered for failing to hold a convention to elect leaders. Fred Membe would have even been in jail for breaking the national constitution and imposing himself as a leader of a party when no one elected him to that position.

No wonder Wynter Kambimba and Father Bwalya ran away from him due to dictatorial tendencies. The Registrar of Societies should do its mandatory job.r

Make No Mistake, You Can Still Be Sentenced To Death Penalty, And Jailed For Defamation Of President Under The Repealed Law- Peter Sinkamba

0

Peter Sinkamba

·

MAKE NO MISTAKE, YOU CAN STILL BE SENTENCED TO DEATH PENALTY, AND JAILED FOR DEFAMATION OF PRESIDENT UNDER THE REPEALED LAW

Introduction:

On 23 December 2022, President Hakainde Hichilema signed into law Penal Code (Amendment) Bill number 25, which purportedlly banned death penalty and the offence of criminal defamation of the president.

Efforts to arrive at abolition happened throughout the year with President Hichilema having submitted, through Justice Ministry, the bill repealing capital punishment to parliament in May 2022, and following Minister of Justice Mulambo Haimbe having participated at the 8th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Berlin, Germany in November of that year.

Although death penalty was provided in the Penal Code, the last execution in Zambia took place in January 1997. Successive governments had placed a moratorium on execution of convicts ever since 1997.

However, the conviction of PF Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda to 18 months imprisonment for the offence of defamation of the president is evidence that the effect of the repeal of Section 25, is that such repeal actually has no effect in the Zambian legal system.

The crux of this discourse borders on an accused being convicted under a repealed law, but its effect under the legal system is undermined.

The opposition rubbished the repeal of Section 25 because there were still other laws on statute books, and the Constitution, which the State could use in lieu to achieve the same objective of punishing an offender for defamation of the president or indeed death sentence.

A combined reading of the provisions of Article 18(4) and 12(1) and (3) of the Constitution 1996 suggest that whereas – no person can be tried and convicted of an offence which did not exist at the time of his commission, or which is not contained in an existing law, however, in the case of death sentence, although the penal code purports to abolish death sentence, Article 12 still exists in the Constitution still provides for it.

Since the Constitution is supreme law of the land, there is no constitutional prohibition against trial and conviction of a person to death. Or indeed, the State can avoid court processes, but still execute suspects under the protection of Article 12. Whether the execution of an offender or suspect is done by prison officials or the police, it still remains death penalty by the State.

As for purported repeal of defamation of the president, the drift in relation to the Nakachinda case is therefore that an accused person can be charged with a repealed offence and but still created by another of defamation of the president penal statute, and that a court of law still has jurisdiction to punish for that offence provided for in another statute. If the facts on which an accused is convicted are known to another law, the fact that the accused was charged under a repealed or wrong law or section of the law will not lead to his acquittal.

In other words, the court has clearly laid down the principle that an a court will not acquit a person merely on account of political statements that defamation of a president is repealed law, if at that time there is still an existing law which can be used to try and convict the accused.

Conclusion:

While every principle of law is meant to streamline and clarify issues arising from any law in force and particularly, the particular provision in question, the Nakachinda case is supposed to be used to guide the court, litigants and counsel in future cases.

To me, I think there is a window of opportunity or a way of escape in an appeal if the appellant complains that he was tried and convicted under a repealed law, according to the parliamentary records (Hansard). The first opening is for the appellant to show that he was misled by the President or that his counsel was misled in the process of being tried under the repealed or non-existent law, according to the Hansard. Or that there was a miscarriage of justice arising from the trial.

Edgar Lungu is a danger to this nation; a hardcore tribalist

The other day, former president, Edgar Lungu took to Social media to register his displeasure over what he deemed as prosecution of some of his supporters for hate speech; describing the same as, retrogressive and regionalism that undermines the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto.

He further wrote, “This morning, I have been reminded of Jackson Chama, a young Zambian who is serving one year imprisonment sentence in Kalomo prison since February 2024 for “hate speech” against the Tonga people. The offense was allegedly committed in Lusaka but the complainant emerged in Kalomo, Southern Province.”

He continues, “you all know the story of “Why Me”, another young man who is equally in police custody in Livingstone now for allegedly, “hate speech” against the Tonga people. The alleged offense was committed in Lusaka but again the complainant emerged from Southern Province.”

Lungu, can you really claim to be a lawyer of good standing in society? If indeed some folks in Southern province felt agrieved by those stupid remarks, do you honestly expect someone from Shan’gombo to file complaints, against the same ?

Lungu further alludes to the imprisonment of Chishimba Kambwili over the similar offenses of “hate speech” against the Tonga people. Interesting!

As a lawyer, we don’t expect Lungu to wantonly gloss over this issue by neglecting to help the public understand why the said individuals have found themselves into conflict with the law! We shall now seek to give a brief background of this without necessarily risking to bore our readers.

In February this year, Jackson Chama went ballistic on Tiktok declaring the people of Southern Province, unfit for government positions. Chama charged that; “no youth from Southern Province will be allowed to take up any government positions in the future because southerners are incapable to run the country as seen by your elders who have ruined your chances by their failure to run the nation…”

It’s shocking that an entire former president can find time to talk about “Why Me”. Were you the one sponsoring him to spew all that rubbish from the septic tank, Sir? “Why Me” is a perfect example of a poorly brought up creature! He has no morals or values at all. Once he got inebriated with his favourite Flying Fish, he’d take utmost pleasure in describing body anatomies in the most obscene, graphic and vile manner that would leave Bana Chimbusa in shock! At some point, he’d digress and vent his anger at “ifi ifibaTonga,” literally undressing them and describing them as the worst human beings!

As for Chishimba Kambwili, oh please, come on! Isn’t Lungu aware that Kambwili was once censured and banned from the campaign trail by the Electoral Commission of Zambia for making utterances that could have plunged our nation into total chaos?

Speaking during an interview on a live phone in radio station in Kasama, Kambwili claimed that the people in the southern region were so tribal that even if Jesus Christ came on earth and stood on a different political party, the people in the region would reject the Son of God and vote for their tribesman!”

Honestly, how can Lungu today complain of “ethnic injustice when a particular tribe has been a subject of contempt, ridicule and hate and even denied of job opportunities during the last 10 years of PF in power?

The behavioural pattern of Lungu in these past few days actually confirms what we’ve feared all along…..that Lungu is a hardcore tribalist, a danger to this nation!

Lungu must not even pretend to insinuate that “as a lawyer, former President, politician and law abiding citizen,” he is against any form of “hate speech” against any person, tribe, region or group of people anywhere!

For instance, when I wrote an article, Sata’s Family Forest Explained which detailed the extent of tribalism and regionalism in terms of individuals appointed to various senior government positions, Edgar Lungu as Home Affairs Minister wanted me to go to prison for treason, for simply stating the truth!

As our Republican President, he never ever bothered reigning in any of his senior officials or party members promoting tribalism or uttering tribal sentiments

During a Parliamentary by-election on Chilubi Island in 2020, Prof. Nkandu Luo would say, “In our land, in line with our tradition, you don’t just pick anyone to succeed me as Nkandu Luo, a Bisa, a Bemba. If I die, you can’t go and get a Tonga in Monze to succeed me.” What nonsense!

Did Lungu reprimand or ever seek to distance himself from such divisive remarks? Negative! He in fact went ahead and rewarded Luo as his running mate in the forthcoming crucial 2021 elections. This simply means he was in agreement with whatever she said.

A week earlier, Chanda Nyela, a staunch PF member openly asked the residents of Clhilubi against voting for any one connected to Tongas because they are bad people.

Did we see heads rolling for uttering such tribal sentiments? Negative!

It’s shocking that former president, Edgar Lungu should be the one to “see the speck in others today, when he actually ignored the log in his eyes” yesterday, when his own cabinet ministers and party cadres were in the forefront of openly sowing seeds of discord in the nation by uttering remarks that tend to expose certain ethnic groupings to contempt, ridicule and hate!

Lungu conveniently kept quiet when his own brutal cadres who had taken over the Lusaka Intercity Bus Terminus ambushed anyone arriving in the city, wearing any red attire and speaking iciTonga, by striping off their clothes and giving them a good beating for supporting the “cow!”

No, Sir! You are not the right person to be raising this issue, today.

When Tongas were being brutalized in public places, you looked the other way; when Tongas were being stereotyped by PF cadres including some senior members of your party, you conveniently kept quiet; worse still, your PF government starting from Micheal Sata to your government, brazenly sidelined people from the Zambezi provinces when allocating government jobs thereby eroding the spirit of the very, “One Zambia, One Nation” motto you want to talk about.

That you want to pretend to be concerned about unity in the nation is a matter of grave concern to some of us; please, try in the next life, Sir!

ENERGY SECTOR WAS STABLE UNTIL UPND TOOK OVER – MUNDUBILE

ENERGY SECTOR WAS STABLE UNTIL UPND TOOK OVER – MUNDUBILE.

….as he stresses the need for Indeni not to be privatized.

Lusaka – Friday, 17 May 2024 (Smart Eagles)

Mporokoso Member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has noted that lack of competition in the petroleum sector has resulted into the numerous challenges which the sector is grappling with such as the looming diesel shortages.

Hon Mundubile expressed concerns over the single sourcing that the UPND administration has repeatedly used in many sectors which he believes is what affects the energy sector as far as fuel procurement is concerned.

He also warned that corruption comes in many forms adding that the energy sector was stable until the UPND took over.

“Reading from the Chairperson of Oil Marketing Association, Dr Kafula Mubanga. There is a statement in today’s newspaper where he states that the looming shortage for diesel is because of one oil marketing company that was single sourced and given 80% of the business,” he said.

“One of the ways in which corruption will come, it will come by way of policy and it will come by way of administration. We do not support single sourcing of fuel to one company which company can hold government to ransom by withholding the stock and creating a shortage.”

The lawmaker said he does not expect preferential treatment where other companies are treated with different conditions like allowing them to charge in US Dollars for petroleum products while others are trading using the local currency.

He called on the Ministry of Energy to clean up their house.

“…and we also want to call upon the Competition Commission to look into the issue of fuel procurement and ensure that there is fair competition. The developments in this sector have been followed keenly by us Members of Parliament because for some time now we have been very suspicious with the dealings surrounding Indeni,” he said.

“And we feel that citizens must get more interested in what is happening at Indeni. We must go back to the drawing board and appreciate the initial plan for which Indeni was constructed.

The lawmaker stressed that he will oppose plans to sale Indeni.

“For the benefit of the Zambian people, Indeni must be protected, there must be reinvestment in that company. Zambians should keep their eyes open,” he warned.

He believes that if Indindeni is operational, the commodity in question can be cheaper.

“Competition in the petroleum sector should be encouraged. We must introduce as many suppliers as possible,” he said.

COUNTERFEIT CERTIFICATES AND CREATIVE FORGERIES CAUSE PAYMENT DELAYS FOR YOUTH PROGRAMME STIPEND

COUNTERFEIT CERTIFICATES AND CREATIVE FORGERIES CAUSE PAYMENT DELAYS FOR YOUTH PROGRAMME STIPEND

THE bustling streets of Matero are said to have been busy as typing and printing businesses saw a surge in demand as youths from across Lusaka sought to obtain counterfeit Grade 12 certificates.

Their goal? To gain entry into the Internship, Volunteers, Apprenticeship, and Graduate (IVAG) programme under the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Arts.

The IVAG programm, designed to provide young people with work experience and reduce unemployment, places individuals in various sectors such as education, health, and defense for a year.

During this period, participants receive a stipend of K1,500 from the government.

However, this stipend, humorously referred to as “kah something,” has been conspicuously absent from the bank accounts of many IVAG participants for four to five months, sparking widespread concern and questions.

In response, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts Elvis Nkandu addressed the issue today in a media-covered engagement with the unpaid IVAG participants.

Nkandu began with an apology for the delayed payments and then posed a rhetorical question about when the Examinations Council of Zambia headquarters had moved from Longacres to Matero, alluding to the rampant production of fake certificates in the township.

“Out of the 2000 [youths] we had put in the papers only 1,649 were certified. So what happened to the rest?” Nkandu questioned, “Some of you went to Matero to aquire grade 12 certificates and when we challenged you to take these results to ECZ, a lot of those certificates were manufactured somewhere else.”

Nkandu expressed both amazement and dismay at the lengths some youths went to, including forging the signature of a Permanent Secretary to create counterfeit offer letters.

“There are other people who were not part of the 2000 but forged offer letters. This is how creative and energetic you people are? Forging the signature of the PS.”

The minister explained that the government halted stipend payments to ensure the rightful recipients were identified.

Authorities are now gathering accurate information and plan to resume payments by the end of the month.

“I know we are dealing with young people that are very innovative and creative and we all know that creativity comes in different forms” he joked, “So we thought it was important that we delay to some point so that we ascertain who are in this program.”

“We are conducting a spot check in Muchinga, Southern, Eastern, Central and Western provinces to verify the exact number of active IVAGs in the programme”

Shocking footage shows Diddy punching and kicking Cassie

Shocking footage shows Sean “Diddy” Combs punching and kicking his former girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, in a hotel hallway in 2016.

The footage, captured from multiple angles and obtained by CNN, shows the music mogul chasing Ms Ventura down the hallway in a towel, before attacking her near the elevators.

He then attempts to drag her back down the corridor.

The incident allegedly took place in the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles.

CNN verified the location based on publicly available photos of the former hotel’s interior.

After pushing Ms Ventura to the ground, Combs retrieves a purse and suitcase from the floor near the elevators. He turns around and kicks her again as she lies on the floor.

Ms Ventura is later seen in the footage slowly standing up and gathering items from the floor before reaching a hotel phone on the hallway wall near the elevators.

Combs, still in a towel and socks, returns.

A mirror directly across from the security camera shows Combs pushing Cassie Ventura. He is then seen throwing an object at her.

Heartbreaking video shows Diddy assaulting his ex Cassie in recently released surveillance footage (Watch)

Accordinng to CNN, Combs later paid the InterContinental Century City $50,000 for the hallway security footage.

The video appears to corroborate several allegations made in a lawsuit brought by Cassie Ventura in 2023, in which she claimed she was trafficked, raped and beaten by Combs on many occasions over 10 years.

According to the complaint, which cited the altercation as occurring “around March 2016,” Combs became “extremely intoxicated and punched Ms Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye.”

After the mogul fell asleep, Ms Ventura had attempted to leave the hotel room, but he woke up and “followed her into the hallway of the hotel while yelling at her,” the complaint said.

“He grabbed at her, and then took glass vases in the hallway and threw them at her, causing glass to crash around them as she ran to the elevator to escape,” it stated.

The lawsuit also claimed that Combs brought the singer into his “ostentatious, fast-paced, and drug-fueled lifestyle” not long after she met him, and signed her to his label in 2005 when she was just 19 and he was 37.

Ms Ventura said that the pattern of abuse began as soon as their relationship started and that, as she was trying to end it in 2018, he forced himself into her Los Angeles home and raped her.

The lawsuit against Combs was settled a day after she filed it for an undisclosed amount of money.

Ms Ventura told CNN at the time she had chosen to “resolve this matter amicably,” while Combs’ attorney said the settlement was “in no way an admission of wrongdoing” and didn’t change his denial of the allegations.

Three family members killed when the small plane they were in broke apart in the air

A well-known Louisiana plastic surgeon and his two adult children, who were both two days away from their college graduation, were killed when the small plane they were in broke apart in the air, officials said.

The single-engine Beechcraft V35 fell apart over Tennessee just south of Nashville around midday Wednesday, May 15, as it was headed from Gonzales, Louisiana, to Louisville.

Dr. Lucius J. Doucet III and his daughter Giselle and son Jean-Luc were killed in the mid-air crash, officials said.

The two were set to graduate from Louisiana State University, where Giselle studied veterinary medicine and Jean Luc was an engineering student, according to WAFB 9.

“It does appear that the flight did break up in the air,” Williamson County Sheriff Mark Elrod told reporters during a Wednesday news conference.

“We are devastated to hear this news, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Doucet family and all those close to them,” the school said in a statement.

“This is heartbreaking for the LSU community, but especially for those who know and love these two students, and those who were expecting to share graduation with them.”

The small aircraft was owned by Lucius Doucet, who practiced in Baton Rouge and was remembered by colleagues as an “exceptional surgeon” that loved to fly planes, the Advocate reported.

“Dr. Doucet was not only an exceptional surgeon, but also a compassionate man who touched the lives of countless individuals within our community,” Williamson Cosmetic Center said.

“His dedication to his patients was unmatched, and his kindness and empathy were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The wreckage from the plane left “a rather large debris field” spanning over half a mile that they would continue searching through Thursday, May 16, Elrod said.

Rough weather might have been a factor in the crash, a National Transportation Safety Board official said Thursday, according to the Advocate.

“If weather didn’t cause the accident, weather was a factor in the accident,” said NTSB aviation accident investigator Aaron McCarter at a news conference.

Emergency responders received a 911 call from a resident who said they saw an explosion and debris — and said there might have been a plane crash, around 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15.

“It was quickly evident that this would be a search-and-recovery operation, not a search-and-rescue operation,” Elrod said.

Audio from Air Traffic Control discussed the plane starting to descend from 9,000 feet — and revealed there were options for it to land 16 miles north, according to News Channel 5.

Air Traffic Control continued trying to reach the plane, but it wasn’t clear from the audio how the pilot responded.

“It sounds like contact lost,” the tower said.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin Fire, Williamson County EMA and Williamson Health EMS responded to the crash.

With ‘Water & Garri,’ Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage makes her acting debut and emerges with a new sound

Despite her extraordinary success in Afrobeats music, Tiwa Savage has long harbored a secret aspiration: to pursue a career in acting.

“Acting, I would say, was my first love before music,” she told CNN’s Larry Madowo during a recent interview in Lagos.

At 44, the multifaceted, award-winning Nigerian artist has transformed her dreams into reality. On May 10, her much-anticipated debut film, “Water & Garri,” hit Prime Video, marking her leap into acting.

Executive produced by Savage and directed by her long-time music video director Meji Alabi, “Water & Garri” is a collaboration between Everything Savage, Unbound Studios, and JM Films.

The concept was born from Savage’s idea to create a visual album for her 2021 EP of the same name. Because of that, it “initially it was only supposed to be like a short film,” Savage said, “and then it grew on its own and took its own identity.”

Written by Comfort Emmanuel, the film is set in a fictional town on the Cape Coast of Ghana and follows a determined fashion designer named Aisha (Savage) who returns to her hometown due to a family tragedy after a decade in the US. However, upon her return home, she finds her once familiar surroundings altered by escalating violence and heightened tensions.

As she reconnects with her family, old friends, and a former flame, Aisha must confront her past and face the guilt of what she left behind – an experience Savage says drew parallels to her own life.

“We both felt like we had to go somewhere to chase our dreams,” said Savage, who spent two weeks in intensive training in London to prepare for the role of Aisha.

“It was just to break me out of my shell, to break me out of Tiwa Savage and just empty me out – and then just allow me to be or embody like a whole different character,” she added.

Experimenting with a new sound

As the production of the film pressed forward, Savage didn’t only shed her superstar persona, she moved on from the initial musical inspiration for the film, instead opting to create an original soundtrack for the movie.

“It was supposed to include the first five songs on the EP; by the time we finished filming, it just took on a whole different identity, and we just created a whole new soundtrack,” the singer explained.

The album served as a platform for Savage to push her vocal boundaries and delve into new musical genres.

“I feel like I’ve been boxed to a certain sound because I’ve done it for over 10 years,” Savage said.

The 10-song soundtrack included collaborations with French Nigerian singer Asa on the folk song “Emotions,” American gospel artist Zacardi Cortez on “I Need You,” and Richard Bona & The Cavemen on the jazz track “Water & Garri.”

“Creating the soundtrack allowed me to explore those different genres, and I think I didn’t feel like I would have been able to do that as Tiwa Savage,” she said. “(So) I was able to explore those pockets of my talent.”

The singer admits she has always loved Jazz, R&B, and gospel music, but after acting in “Water & Garri” and performing the soundtrack, she says has discovered how much she has grown as an artist and feels encouraged to be limitless in her creativity.

“I’m not limiting myself to the sound that people know me for; I’ve definitely grown even in a performance – like I used to have a lot of dances and do routines,” the singer-turned-actress explained.

“Now I think I’m more about vocal delivery,” she added. “Going forward from that … I feel like I can do anything.”

South Sudan government, rebel groups sign pact to achieve lasting peace

South Sudan’s Transitional Government of National Unity and opposition groups signed a pact on Thursday to enhance efforts toward lasting peace and stability in the country.

By signing the declaration of commitment to the Tumaini Initiative, meaning “hope” in Swahili, the two parties pledged to support efforts to end hostilities and promote inclusive growth in South Sudan.

The signing ceremony, held in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, opposition groups, civil society and bilateral partners, all witnessing the commitment to the South Sudan peace process.

Abraham Korir Sing’oei, Kenya’s principal secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, hailed the signing of the new pact to boost the quest for peace, justice, inclusivity and good governance in South Sudan.

Sing’oei added that parties to the South Sudan peace process including the government and opposition groups had an obligation to promote justice, governance, economic growth and security sector reforms, to achieve long-term stability in the country.

This week, Kenya hosted high-level mediation talks initiated by President William Ruto earlier this month. The talks aim to establish a foundation for lasting peace in South Sudan.

In addition, the talks that brought on board government officials and opposition groups as well as civil society members were expected to discuss the modalities of holding general elections slated for December.

Albino Mathom, the head of the South Sudan government delegation, said the mediation talks, whose climax was the signing of the declaration of commitment to the South Sudan peace process, reaffirmed the vitality of home-grown initiatives to tackle regional conflicts.

Mathom added that given the calamities that civil strife has visited South Sudan in the last four decades, leaders and ordinary citizens were committed to closing that painful chapter and forging a future of hope, peace and justice.

Pagan Amum Okiech, the spokesperson for the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (R-SPLM), an opposition group, said the signing of the declaration of commitment to the Tumaini Initiative ushered in a new era of durable peace, unity and respect for political pluralism.

The South Sudan opposition groups, according to Amum, are committed to rescuing the country from multiple crisis, forge national consensus on designing a future of freedom, prosperity and justice for all citizens.

Meantime, Lazarus Sumbeiywo, the chief mediator of the ongoing high-level mediation process for South Sudan in Kenya, expressed faith in the commitment of all parties to ending hostilities that bode ill for stability in the region.

In December 2023, South Sudan President Salva Kiir reportedly asked President Ruto to assume the lead in mediating peace talks, taking over from the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome. Kiir expressed concerns that the talks had lingered without resolution under Sant’Egidio’s mediation.

The Rome-based community adjourned the peace talks in March 2023 due to disagreements between the parties regarding the agenda.

FIFA to seek legal advice on proposal to suspend Israel from international football

Facing a Palestinian proposal to suspend Israel from international soccer because of the conflict with Hamas, FIFA bought time Friday (May. 17) by agreeing to seek legal advice before holding an extraordinary council meeting within two months.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino outlined the plan to 211 member federations after leaders of the Palestinian and Israel soccer bodies spoke at the governing body’s annual congress in Bangkok.

“Now, due to the obvious sensitivity of these matters, FIFA will mandate as of now independent legal expertise to analyze and assess the three requests made by the Palestinian Football Association and ensure that the statutes and regulations of FIFA are applied in the correct way in order to ensure a fair and due process,” Infantino said.

“This legal assessment will have to allow for inputs and claims of both member associations. The results and the recommendations … will be forwarded to the FIFA council.

“Due to the urgency of the situation, an extraordinary FIFA Council will be convened and will take place before July 20 to review the results of the legal assessment and to take the decisions that are appropriate.”

Long-standing issues
The Palestinian soccer federation has now spoken at a FIFA Congress at least five times since 2014 without making the progress it wants.

Palestinian soccer’s issues with Israel in that decade have included travel restrictions on its players, the Israeli league including teams from West Bank settlements, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In the past 10 years, FIFA under two different presidents has deferred a vote or decision, or created a working group to report back at a later meeting.

The Palestine Football Association proposal to 211 member federations called for “appropriate sanctions, with immediate effect, against Israeli teams” and was forecast in FIFA documents released last month.

The motion noted “international law violations committed by the Israeli occupation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza” and cited FIFA statutory commitments on human rights and against discrimination.

The Palestinian FA wrote that “all the football infrastructure in Gaza has been either destroyed, or seriously damaged, including the historic stadium of Al-Yarmuk.”

On Friday at the congress, Palestinian soccer’s leader Jibril Rajoub said “the Palestinian people, including the Palestinian football family, are enduring an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”

He said 193 footballers were among the thousands of Palestinians to die in the ongoing war which erupted Oct. 7 with Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel.

Israel’s deady operation has killed over 35,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures. About 80% of Gaza’s population have been driven from their homes.

Alleged threats
Rajoub, who said he had been threatened because of his sanctions proposal, urged FIFA delegates not to delay the vote.

“The Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs has made serious threats to imprison me if I do not withdraw this proposal, but no power in the world can stand in the way of truth,” Rajoub said.

But Infantino said the matter couldn’t go to a full vote of the membership on Friday because it had to be dealt with by FIFA’s governing council.

“I do not want to divide our 211 member countries,” he said. “I have a responsibility as president to apply the statutes of FIFA and its regulations, whatever my personal conviction on these and other terrible matters around the world.”

He said at the FIFA council meeting on Wednesday, all 37 members unanimously agreed to condemn the acts of violence that have taken place and decided to send a strong message of solidarity.

“The FIFA Council also reiterated that football should not and should never become a hostage of politics and always remain … a force of good uniting people rather than dividing,” Infantino said.

The meeting Friday included delegates from Russia, whose national and club teams have been suspended from international competitions since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The legal argument put by FIFA and UEFA was the refusal of other European teams to play Russians would cause chaos in competitions.

Israel has played in UEFA competitions as a member since 1994 and no European federation has refused to play its teams.

T.I. has given props to J. Cole for apologizing to Kendrick Lamar after dissing him on “7 Minute Drill.”

T.I. has given props to J. Cole for apologizing to Kendrick Lamar after dissing him on “7 Minute Drill.”

During an interview on Big Boy’s Neighborhood on Thursday (May 16), the Atlanta rapper weighed in on the brief battle between K. Dot and Cole, which the latter controversially bowed out of.

“I feel he chose peace and tranquility,” he said with a laugh when asked about Cole’s divisive apology. “You gotta have thick skin and really be unfazed and unbothered. And we don’t know the temperament or the sensitivity of Cole’s dynamic. We’ve never seen Cole upset. We don’t know where that would take him.”

He added: “I think that was quite mature of him.”

T.I.’s comments echo those of Black Thought, who also recently praised J. Cole for apologizing to Kendrick live on stage at his Dreamville Festival.

Appearing on the This Week in White Supremacy podcast earlier this month, The Roots MC said: “Though I hadn’t heard any of the music, I thought it was a beautiful thing. That was what was unprecedented.

“What we’ve seen, time and time again since the ’80s, are MCs going back and forth, like battling out. Sometimes they keep it to the record, sometimes it gets physical and it gets crazy.”

He continued: “What we’ve yet to see is somebody nip that in the bud, right? That’s what I felt like he was in effect doing. It just showed humility, nobility and a sense of elevation that you don’t see too often across the board.

“When the plane’s going down, you gotta situate your own oxygen mask first. He’s been on a trajectory of just that, self-revelation, and investing in himself.”

Tip and Thought are in the minority when it comes to their opinion, though. Cole has faced plenty of backlash and ridicule from fans and fellow rappers, including childhood hero Kanye West.

When asked about the Dreamville boss’ apology in a recent sit-down with Justin Laboy, Ye snapped: “Fuck all that pussy shit. Fuck all that shit, man. Because it’s like, that n-gga J. Cole went on tour with Drake. He knows what it is. It’s like, n-gga, you can’t run now.”

Laboy then asked the Chicago rap icon if apologies are “allowed” in rap beef, to which he said: “I don’t know, man. I don’t listen to J. Cole so I wouldn’t even know. I just heard he had a song called ‘False Idols’ [sic] and somebody told me it’s halfway about me.”

50 Cent, Suge Knight and Dame Dash have also criticized Cole for backing out of his battle with Kendrick Lamar.

The most successful African players in UEFA Champions League history

In the history of the UEFA Champions League and its predecessor – the European Cup – 27 different African players have tasted glory.

The most recent player from the continent to add to the list of champions was Riyad Mahrez with Manchester City in 2023.

Only two of the 27 Africans who were once champions of Europe became multiple-time winners during their careers. However, in 2024, a player could join them as the most successful in the competition’s history.

The first North African multiple-winner could be crowned in 2024
Achraf Hakimi is already a part of the relatively small list of Africans to have tasted the ultimate European success. He won the UCL with Real Madrid in 2018 and this year he could become the first North African player to become a multiple-time champion.

The Moroccan now plays for Paris Saint Germain which means he could also become just the second African to win the tournament with two different clubs. In a bet on sports, the French club are seen as slight outsiders at 5/2 to win the competition.

The UCL betting tips for the remainder of the campaign suggest Madrid’s prestige will see them come out on top once again.

PSG are expected to reach the final through their tie with Borussia Dortmund in the last four, and from there Hakimi would be able to make history for his country and continent as well as the Parisian club.

Samuel Eto’o currently stands alone as the most successful player in the history of the UCL. He won the competition thrice – with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009 and Inter Milan in 2010.

This means that unless Hakimi helps PSG to glory this year, he will remain the only player from Africa to have lifted the trophy at multiple clubs.

The Cameroonian was incredibly influential in his triumphs with the Spanish club as he scored decisive goals in the finals of 2006 and 2009. He did not play quite the starring role in Inter’s success of 2010 although he did net a couple in the early stages.

Eto’o is ultimately Africa’s only legendary star who can claim to be genuine royalty on European club football’s biggest stage.

Seydou Keita – two-time winner
Seydou Keita offered his country Mali excellent representation in Europe throughout his Barcelona career. His first continental win came in 2009 against Manchester United in Rome where he played alongside Eto’o in what was one of the club’s most significant UCL nights ever.

After his Cameroonian teammate departed, the Malian helped the Catalans to another tournament victory in 2011 where they again got the better of Sir Alex Ferguson’s United team.

The tough-tackling midfielder was vital in both successes for Barcelona. He provided constant breaking of the play amid a team that was mainly focused on flair and creativity.

North Korea shot what seem like short-range missiles towards its east coast on Friday, according to South Korea’s military. This happened the day after South Korea and the US flew strong fighter jets together in a drill that North Korea sees as a big security danger.

South Korea’s military leaders said that North Korea launched weapons from its east coast Wonsan region. The weapons traveled about 300 kilometers (185 miles) before landing in the waters between Korea and Japan. Japan’s top government spokesperson, Yoshimasa Hayashi, said that a missile from North Korea landed in an area outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

South Korea’s military said the missile launches are a clear threat to peace in the area. South Korea will be ready to defend against any attacks from North Korea, with help from the United States.

North Korea has been testing more weapons recently to make its weapons stronger and more up-to-date. Talks with the United States and South Korea have not been successful. Last week, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, watched a new rocket launch system being tested. This information was reported by North Korea’s state media.

North Korea says it had to make its nuclear and missile programs stronger because of the threats from the US. North Korea says the US and South Korea are doing more military training, which they think is getting ready for an invasion. Foreign experts believe that North Korea uses its rivals’ military drills as an excuse to build more weapons. They think this will help North Korea have more power in future talks with the US.

On Thursday, two South Korean planes and two US planes practiced flying together over the middle of South Korea. North Korea is very concerned about the advanced US weapons being sent to their area. AircraftReportedly, a US F-22 was sent to South Korea for the first time in seven months.

North Korea’s official news agency said on Friday that the US sending F-22s for training with South Korea is more evidence of the US being hostile and wanting to use force against North Korea. KCNA says that South Korea’s military is making tensions worse to support their master’s plan to fight against North Korea.

It said that the F-22s flying over will make a bad situation worse for the US, but it didn’t say what North Korea will do about it.

On Friday, Kim’s sister Kim Yo Jong said that North Korea’s recent weapons tests are part of the country’s plan to build up their weapons over the next five years, which started in 2021. She said the new weapons are made to attack Seoul, the capital of South Korea. She also said the tests were not meant to show off weapons North Korea wants to sell to Russia.

“We openly admit that we will use these weapons to stop Seoul from coming up with unnecessary ideas,” stated Kim Yo Jong in a message reported by KCNA.

John Frog: From child soldier to Afrobeats star

John Frog is one of South Sudan’s most successful musicians.

He’s forging an international reputation and has collaborated with artists from other African countries, including Uganda’s Eddie Kenzo, and Bahati from Kenya.

His latest song My Bed features Iyanya from Nigeria.

Frog is his real name. He was called Aguek, which means frog in Dinka, a language native to South Sudan, because he was a breech baby, coming into the world feet-first.

Given that his mother gave birth to him in a remote village with no hospital or doctor in sight, he was lucky to survive, as was his mother.

John Frog was born during the civil war and his parents were soldiers in the SPLA – the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. He himself was a child soldier, joining the army at around eight years old.

“They didn’t give us a gun yet, until I was 14 – that’s when I was given a gun,” he tells me.

“Every day, every week, there is a fight, so we have to run in the forest, in the water, so it was quite tough for me.”

He shares that he didn’t go to school and picked up English “from the street”.

Frog says he always loved music and even in the forest he would listen to traditional music.

It was when he got the opportunity to go to South Sudan’s capital, Juba and he met other young Africans that he started making music himself.

“We didn’t have enough producers in Juba. The producers who are here are from Kenya and Uganda, so it was a bit hard to know the kind of genre for South Sudanese music, so I decided to do Afrobeats,” he says.

Frog says the musicians who make the most money in South Sudan are the traditional ones.

“They praise people, they praise leaders, praise people who have money, so it’s the quickest way to make money here.”

“But my aim is to reach the wider audience. Either this year or next year, I have to be among our brothers who are on top.”

Ex-Army Sergeant guilty of killing Black Lives Matter protestor pardoned by governor of Texas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has decided to forgive a former US Army soldier who was convicted of shooting and killing someone during a protest in 2020. The protest was against police brutality and racism.

Abbott said Daniel Perry will be pardoned and allowed to have his guns back. This came after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended it unanimously.

Perry was in prison for 25 years after being convicted of killing Garrett Foster in 2023. He was let out of prison shortly after receiving a pardon.

Perry, who is white, was driving for a ride-share company when his car came near a protest in Austin. The lawyers said he could have left the argument with Foster, who was a white Air Force veteran and didn’t use his gun according to witnesses.

A group of people found Perry guilty of killing someone, but Abbott said Perry was just protecting himself.

“Texas has a very strong law that allows people to defend themselves called ‘Stand Your Ground. ‘ It can’t be canceled by a jury or district attorney who has progressive beliefs,” Abbott mentioned.

Abbott, who is a Republican in his third term, usually only forgives small crimes. He chose not to forgive George Floyd for a drug arrest in 2004 after Floyd’s death. The killing of Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis in 2020 led to protests across the country.

Abbott told the board to look over Perry’s case after the trial. He said he would pardon Perry if the board recommended it. Under Texas law, the governor can’t forgive someone for a crime unless the board, who the governor chooses, suggests it.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza criticized the pardon, saying it makes a joke of our legal system.

“Garza said that the board and the governor are more focused on politics than justice. ” “They should feel bad about what they did. ” They are breaking the law and showing that in this state, some people are treated better than others.

Abbott asked for a new look at Perry’s case because Tucker Carlson asked him to on TV. Carlson wanted the governor to help after the sergeant was found guilty in April 2023. Perry was given a punishment because prosecutors said he was racist and might hurt someone again, based on what he posted on social media and sent in text messages.

The sergeant’s lawyers said that Foster did lift the rifle and Perry had to shoot him. Perry didn’t speak in court and the jury took two days to decide that he was guilty.

Perry’s lawyer, Clint Broden, said Perry was only protecting himself when he was facing a group of angry people and someone with a dangerous gun.

Broden said that the events in the case were very sad and unfortunately, Garrett Foster died. “Mister Perry and his family are thankful to the Board of Pardons and Parole for looking at their case carefully. They are also grateful that the State of Texas has laws to let people defend themselves. ”

Foster’s girlfriend, Whitney Mitchell, was with him when he was killed. She called the pardon a “lawless” act.

The governor has disrespected the life of a murdered Texan and US Air Force veteran and questioned the jury’s fair decision by granting a pardon. Mitchell said that he declared that people in Texas who have different political views from him and those in power can be killed without any consequences.

The shooting caused a lot of arguing in 2020 during the protests after Floyd’s death. Three years later, Perry’s conviction made a lot of conservative people very angry.

Before the judge made a decision in the case, Carlson talked on TV about the shooting. He said it was self-defence and he also said some bad things about Abbott for not going on his show. The day after, Abbott said he thought Perry should not be punished and asked Texas’ parole board to quickly review the conviction.

Before Perry was punished by the court, it revealed many text messages and social media posts showing his unfriendly views towards Black Lives Matter protests. Perry made a comment on Facebook a month before the shooting. He said, “I am a racist because I do not agree with people acting like animals at the zoo. ”

Perry was in the Army for over ten years. During the trial, a psychologist said he thinks Perry has post-traumatic stress disorder because of his time in Afghanistan and being bullied as a kid. During the shooting, Perry was working at Fort Cavazos, which later became Fort Hood. It is about 70 miles north of Austin.

Kim Jong Un’s sibling disputes North Korea has given Russia armaments

Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister said again on Friday that North Korea has not sent any weapons to Russia. She called it ridiculous that people are speculating about weapons deals between North Korea and Russia.

The US and South Korea believe that North Korea is giving weapons to Russia for their war in Ukraine in exchange for advanced military technology and economic help. North Korea and Russia have said that it is not true many times.

Experts from other countries think that North Korea did some tests with artillery and short-range missiles recently to show off the weapons they want to sell to Russia.

Kim Yo Jong said that she doesn’t think it’s necessary to assess or interpret the North Korean-Russian dealings because she thinks it’s very ridiculous and doesn’t make sense.

“We don’t want to share our military technology with any other country or make it available to the public,” she said in a message reported by the state media.

She said North Korea tested weapons as part of their plan to build up their military over the next five years. She said the new weapons are made to attack Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

“We’re not hiding the fact that we will use these weapons to stop Seoul from having any unnecessary thoughts,” said Kim Yo Jong.

Last year, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Wonsik said North Korea sent about 7,000 containers of weapons and military gear to Russia. In response, Shin said that North Korea got more than 9,000 Russian containers that probably had aid inside.

In January, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, John Kirby, said that missiles from North Korea were used in an attack on Ukraine. At that time, officials in Ukraine said they found a missile in the northeastern Kharkiv region and believed it came from North Korea.

Selling weapons to North Korea would break the rules of the United Nations, which Russia agreed to.

In May, the White House said that Russia was sending more refined petroleum to North Korea than the UN Security Council allows.

North Korea and Russia are becoming closer friends because they both have problems with the United States. North Korea is working on making nuclear weapons, and Russia is fighting a long war in Ukraine.

Since 2022, North Korea has been doing a lot of missile tests that make other countries worried. The US is doing more military practice with South Korea and Japan because of this. Experts from other countries believe that North Korea probably believes that having more weapons will give them more power in future talks with the United States.

Israel accuses South Africa of false claims at ICJ

South Africa has accused Israel of genocide, which Israel vehemently rejects
Israel has accused South Africa of distorting reality in its attempt to get the UN’s top court to force it to stop its military campaign in the town of Rafah in southern Gaza.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) began two days of hearings on Thursday, when South Africa told the court that Israel intended to “wipe [the Palestinians] off the face of the Earth”, calling Rafah “the final stand”.

Lawyers for Israel are presenting their response to the court on Friday.

The court is already considering a case brought by South Africa in January accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has rejected the claim as false and “grossly distorted”.

In its latest application, South Africa is also seeking to force Israel to allow “unimpeded access” to Gaza for aid workers, journalists and investigators.

South Africa laid out its case to the court at The Hague, accusing Israel of escalating what is says is a genocidal campaign against the Palestinians.

The Rafah campaign was “the last step in the destruction of Gaza and its Palestinian people”, South African barrister Vaughan Lowe KC told the court.

“It was Rafah that brought South Africa to the court. But it is all Palestinians as a national, ethnical and racial group who need the protection from genocide that the court can order,” he said.

But, delivering Israel’s response, its Deputy Attorney General, Gilad Noam, said that was an inversion of reality.

“South Africa warns this court that, I quote, ‘if Rafah falls, so too does Gaza’. Once again however, the reality is exactly the opposite,” he said.

“Only by bringing down Hamas’s military stronghold in Rafah will Palestinians be liberated from the clenched grip of the murderous terrorist regime and the road to peace and prosperity may finally be paved.”

Israel began its attack on Hamas in Rafah 11 days ago, amid warnings from the UN and others of a grave risk to civilians. More than a million displaced people had taken refuge in Rafah and more than 630,000 have now fled from there since the start of the operation, the UN says.

Israel says its offensive in Rafah is necessary in order to destroy the last remaining Hamas battalions which are based there and to rescue some 130 remaining Israeli hostages who it believes are being held there.

In January, in a highly charged case which was closely watched around the world, the ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to prevent potentially genocidal acts in Gaza. It also ordered Israel to do more to enable the provision of aid to the people there.

The then president of the court, Joan Donoghue, told the BBC last month that the ICJ did not decide that there was a plausible case for genocide, but rather that the Palestinians had a right to be protected from genocide.

The ICJ is not expected to deliver a ruling on the genocide case for several years. Its rulings are legally binding, but in practice unenforceable by the court.

The latest application is the fourth which South Africa, whose governing party has a long history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, has filed with the ICJ against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Israel began its offensive in Gaza after gunmen from the ruling Palestinian group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people and taking 252 others hostage.

At least 35,303 people have been killed by Israel in the war in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Israel has accused South Africa of distorting the truth in its case at the ICJ

HICHILEMA IS DESTROYING THE POLICE- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA IS DESTROYING THE POLICE

The decision by the Zambia Police to barge into a private meeting between Mr Edgar Lungu and Bishop Clement Mulenga of the Catholic Diocese of Kabwe, uninvited, in uniform and without a warrant is shameful and most unfortunate.

Our Constitution guarantees that every citizen must be equal and be protected before the law. Every citizen of this country is equal before the law without any discrimination. The police are supposed to respect and protect the citizens of this country regardless of their status or political affiliation.

Therefore, this wanton repression in a constitutional democracy, abuse of state institutions, heightened human rights and constitutional violations coupled with systematic tribalism and corruption being perpetrated by Mr Hakainde Hichilema using the police is cheap, dangerous and unacceptable.

The intimidation and harassment of Mr Lungu and Bishop Mulenga in Kabwe today by Mr Hichilema’s police is a major blow to the country’s reputation, image and democratic credentials. This country is being ripped apart by Mr Hichilema and his regime without any shame. This is sad and embarrassing, to say the least.

We know Mr Hichilema has failed. He is gripped by fear of losing power. It is this fear that is now propelling his decision and action against his political opponents and religious leaders.

Mr Hichilema is fully aware that things are not well. The ground has shifted, and the quick fixing he promised the people to win the election has become impossible. People are fed up with his lies, deception, and arrogance.

Even his efforts to mask his fear with a macho posturing is failing – it can’t be concealed anymore. Mr Hichilema’s vulnerabilities are showing on his face and can be picked up in his tone and speeches.

But Mr Hichilema must know that putting a lid on political activities, including private meetings with religious leaders, as was the case today with Mr Lungu and Bishop Mulenga, is a desperate measure that won’t work. It will backfire very badly!

For how long and how far will Mr Hichilema continue to use the police to curtail the people’s right to the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms? We want to remind Mr Hichilema that consistent repression and suppression of democratic values by the police only lead to daily confrontations between the police and the citizens, which eventually result in quick erosion of the people’s trust, respect, confidence and dignity in the police.

This desperation is destroying the police service and our society in general. This government is making the police be viewed as an extension of the UPND, which deserves no respect and recognition from the citizens. They’re cheapening the police service.

Mr Hichilema must not think the people will always be quiet and tolerate this nonsense. If he thinks these dictatorial ways and excesses will be acceptable, then he is in for a rude awakening in 2026.

We call upon all Zambians of goodwill and intention to unite and defend their liberties and human dignity.

If we choose to resist and struggle, we will win!

Hon Mundubile castigates police for breaking into a Bishop’s office to stop a private meeting

ZAMBIA IS NOW A POLICE STATE

…observes Hon Mundubile as he castigates police for breaking into a Bishop’s office to stop a private meeting.

Kabwe – Friday, 17 May 2024 (Smart Eagles)

Sickened with their unprofessionalism, Mporokoso Member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has slammed the police officers in Kabwe who earlier today broke into Bishop Clement Mulenga’s office to stop a private meeting he was having with 6th Republican President, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

He fumed that the unpleasant conduct of the police is confirmation that the country is now a police state.

Hon Mundubile said it is shocking that in a country with democratic Constitutional order, police can break through a bishop’s office and attempt to stop a meeting just because the former Head of State was there to meet the Bishop.

“On numerous occasions, we have stated that Zambia is now a police state and the police are the law unto themselves. For those that were arguing, for those that have wanted to dispute that, they could clearly see that those assertions that we made are actually true because a police man could break into anybody’s office and stop a private meeting, a meeting between private citizens, a meeting between the Bishop and a citizen could be stopped by a police man because he has been instructed to do so,” he said.

The lawmaker implored President Hakainde Hichilema to quickly look at the operations of the police in line with the country’s democracy.

“Citizens have rights… but it seems in the new Zambia, we have the police who donated unto themselves the power they don’t really have,” he said.

“The power to harass citizens, the power to break into offices and stop meetings as it were. The issue of President Lungu should be looked at like any other case. President Lungu is a citizen who has the freedom of movement. Its therefore shocking to hear a police man say you’re going to the Copperhead you can’t stop in Kabwe. That is unheard of.”

He said President Hichilema and police IG should be reminded that “we are a democracy, we are a Constitutional democracy and the rule of law should be at the center not the rule of men. So, it is indeed embarrassing to our democratic credentials to see that even private meetings will be subject of police authorization…”

“Those are things that were left 40 years ago but the UPND is slowly taking us back where they think everything we do should have permission of the police. So, we want to condemn that in the strongest terms,” he said.

HOW I LEFT HOME AND HOW I FEEL TODAY- Chilufya Tayali

By Chilufya Tayali

HOW I LEFT HOME AND HOW I FEEL TODAY.

I was doing my rosary, in the morning, when my phone vibrated for an in-coming call; I looked at a screen and it was one of my Special Intelligence Officers (SIO). I quickly went out of the grotto to pick this call, because my SIOs don’t just call, unless there’s something serious.

After the routine exchange of greetings, my SIO advised me to make a move otherwise I will find myself in Southern Province because the Zambezi Force were organizing transport and allowances to pick me and take me there.

Owing to the sensitivity of the information, I could not share it with anyone, I just went home and packed a few things and told my wife that, something has come up and I needed to go to South Africa, immediately.

After securing myself, in South Africa, that is when I told my wife about the entire situation. Inevitably this meant that I might have to live outside Zambia for some time.

My wife asked me about the possible Countries where I thought we would stay but I had no clue, because I never thought of living outside Zambia. I have always felt very settled with my life, of selling vegetables at roofing sheets at CTTK Business Ventures Limited. I had everything figured out.

My wife threw in a few suggestions which I adopted and started working on going to those Countries.

Fast forward, today I am in a Country that, I never on the list, though some World News once drew my attention to this Country and I remember praying for the citizens.

What is my point???

We can’t just be sure about our life, anything can happen at anytime. God is the author of our lives. Yes, make your plans, dream and desire whatever you can, but never forget to look up to God and ask him to be with you.

Create a strong (LOVE) relationship with God before you aspire for anything. Many of us know God but our relationship with him is very casual.

“‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?” Jesus asked Peter.

If you have a strong relationship with God, you will believe in His WILL (Let your WILL be done) and not to tell God what to do, or setting up conditions for him.

Many of us, we want God to act according to our WILL and not His which makes us very frustrated when things don’t go our way.

I am very happy in this Country where I am, because my prayer was always, “Let your WILL be done”, I had no preference and I am still open to wherever may come.

If I was not open to the WILL of God I would have been very frustrated that I could not find myself in those Countries that my wife had suggested.

Secondly, we should never be selfish, as much as you want those good things, others want something. too; so show care so that others can care for you as well. If you love god, you have to love others as well.

Jesus told Peter, that if he loved him as he said, he should feed his Sheep. Meaning he has to be a good Sheppard, and we know what it means to be a good Sheppard (Leadership).

Loving people means that one has to be committed and responsible to and for them, respectively.

But leadership should not just be looked as for those in political or religious, or social, but most of us are leaders at various levels, starting with out families. Therefore, we are all called build a strong relationship (of love) with God and love others.

Since I left Zambia, I have endeavored to be very prayerful and go to Church whenever I can. I want to grow my relationship with God even more.

Much as I need so much help, being in this situation, I also try to be open and aware of the need of others.

I am, also, in touch with my family and all those close to me, including those of you on social media. Which is why, you see me advocating for people like Meridian Bank and BoZ workers, among others.

I take whatever I am going through as a WILL of God for my growth, purification and humility. I am certainly learning a lot from the entire experience, such that I am more grateful to God than upset for leaving my Country.

I hope you build your relationship with God, so that His WILL can be actualize in you and remember whatever God gives you, it is for His glory not ours.

MAY HIS WILL BE DONE, HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!!

Address Inflation and Currency Volatility Through Balanced Monetary and Fiscal Policies

Once again, the Bank of Zambia has raised its monetary policy rate by 100 basis points to 13.5 percent, up from 12.5 percent, in a short period. It is known that the country was grappling with high inflation rates and currency instability when the United Party for National Development (UPND) took office. However, my concern is centered on UPND’s heavy reliance on monetary measures to tackle these challenges, overlooking the need for a holistic approach that combines both monetary and fiscal strategies. This unbalanced approach has proven ineffective in managing inflation and ensuring the stability of the Zambian kwacha

It is crucial to recognize that relying solely on monetary tools to handle inflation and currency fluctuations overlooks the root causes of these economic issues. While adjustments in interest rates and money supply regulation may temporarily impact inflation, they are insufficient in fostering sustainable economic stability. Furthermore, an excessive dependence on monetary policy can result in unintended negative outcomes such as restricted access to credit for businesses and increased borrowing expenses for consumers.

Effective coordination between monetary and fiscal authorities is crucial for attaining sustainable economic growth and stability. Fiscal policies, including government spending and taxation, are instrumental in influencing aggregate demand and supply in the economy. Neglecting the implementation of fiscal interventions can hinder the effectiveness of monetary policy actions and lead to economic imbalances like we are experiencing.

To effectively address inflation and currency fluctuations, the UPND government should implement a comprehensive approach that integrates monetary and fiscal measures. By collaborating closely with the central bank and the Ministry of Finance, policymakers can strive for improved results in maintaining price stability, managing exchange rates, and fostering overall economic development.

It is important to recognize that implementing well-balanced monetary and fiscal policies can create an optimal environment for fostering investment, job growth, and sustainable development. Maintaining price stability and a consistent exchange rate enables businesses to make informed choices in terms of production and investment, which in turn boosts productivity and enhances competitiveness on a global scale.

In addition, adopting a holistic strategy for economic governance has the potential to instill trust among both local and international investors, which is indispensable for attracting investment and driving economic advancement. Through the implementation of responsible fiscal policies, such as decreasing national debt and improving mining tax revenue, the Zambian government can establish a secure macroeconomic environment favorable for sustained prosperity.

The UPND government must prioritize balanced monetary and fiscal policies to tackle inflation and currency volatility effectively. By using both tools together, policymakers can achieve better economic stability and growth. Recognizing the interconnectedness of these policies and adopting a comprehensive approach to economic management is essential for the long-term prosperity of the Zambian economy. Addressing these issues requires collaboration and commitment to sustainable economic growth.

TAKE FORMER VICE PRESIDENTS’ BENEFITS TO PARLIAMENT, KALABA URGES HH

TAKE FORMER VICE PRESIDENTS’ BENEFITS TO PARLIAMENT, KALABA URGES HH

I welcome the support that President Hakainde Hichilema is providing to our former Vice Presidents through government’s engagement of former Vice Presidents as Special Envoys. Indeed it is about time our government started taking care of those who have served the country by holding the office of Vice President.

However President Hichilema must present this before Parliament and ensure that the issue of benefits accruing to the former Vice Presidents does not result in them being called to pay back to the state as was the case for the former ministers who had to refund their salaries – an amount that I was happy to refund. The terms of accruing these benefits should also be clear just like it is for the Office of the former Republican President.

I have noted and observed that the “special envoy appointments” and functional missions seems to work and favour our two former Vice Presidents Mr. Enock Kavindele and Dr Nevers Mumba, who coincidentally have been issuing statements that akin to them being card carrying members of the UPND. If they are special envoys and earning 80% of an Incumbent Vice Presidents salary, should they be this active in politics? The other issue of concern is that today this country has more than two surviving former Vice Presidents, is their any reason why former Vice President Kavindele and Former Vice President Mumba are the only beneficiaries of near “stately” treatment?
Furthermore Dr Nevers Mumba is still president of the MMD. Should he be getting these benefits which are clearly Vice President’s benefits masked as Special Envoy when he is still active in politics? If that is the case why has government withdrawn the benefits that are due to former President Lungu?

The Citizens First demands an all inclusive, impartial and more comprehensively well harmonized approach to the award of benefits and we call that the same be extended to some other leaders who do not enjoy any benefits besides having served this nation with honor and distinction.

Amos Chanda out on bail

Amos Chanda out on bail

AFTER spending close to a week in behind bars after he was jailed one year for stealing court records, former press aid Amos Chanda was granted bail pending appeal by the Lusaka magistrates Court yesterday.

Principal resident magistrate Irene Wishimanga admitted Chanda to free bail in the sum of K100, 000 in his own recognizance on a condition that he provides two working sureties who are residents of Lusaka who will be quizzed by the Court prior to his release.

She said Chanda would also have to surrender his passport to the clerk of Court.

Chanda was again sent to prison for a year within a space of two moths for theft of court documents.

On March 13, 2024, former president Edgar Lungu’s special assistant for press and public relations was jailed seven months together with his wife Mable and sister in-law Ruth Nakaundi for showering insults on officers of the Anti-Corruption Commission but were released on bail pending appeal.

On May 10, the Lusaka Magistrates Court again put him behind prison walls for 12 months for having stolen Court documents in a matter were he was was jointly charged with former RTSA boss Zindaba Soko and Intelligence Mobility Solutions board Chairman Walid El-Nahas for corrupt practices by a public officer in 2019.

Principal resident magistrate Irene Wishimanga ordered Chanda to also pay a meager K5, 000 for destroying the evidence and permanently depriving the judiciary of the case record.

In this case, Chanda was charged with theft and destroying evidence.

In her judgement magistrate Wishimanga said though there was no evidence to show that Chanda in his personal capacity got the original case record CRMP/001/2020 from the Subordinate Court it is evident that it is no longer in the court registry.

Magistrate Wishimanga wondered how Chanda knew that the case record had over a hundred pages according to his confessions in the voice recording if at all he had not stolen it.

She said the only evidence available before Court was the voice recording and the missing court record.

“The recording is the only evidence corroborated as revealed by the accused having burnt the case record,” she said.

She noted that though Chanda didn’t move Court documents from the registry directly , he might have been helped by someone to do so.

Magistrate Wishimanga said Chanda himself was clearly heard saying he took the case record which was a hand written copy of the ‘judge’ and set it ablaze it at his farm.

She said Chanda also mentioned about the US$45, 000 bargain amount he paid to the State in order for him to be released.

Magistrate Wishimanga said the word judge is used synonymously to magistrate by many and Chanda himself said the record would not be used as evidence in future, as he had burnt it in a rubbish pit at his farm and Soko lauded him for his actions which he referred to as mafia style.

She said Chanda was implicated in the recording produced by Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers, but he opted to remain silent in his defense.

“The accused needed to say something about the recording in his defense though he is not obligated to do so and prove he was the one at the hotel or not,” Magistrate Wishimanga said

“The accused had the evidential burden to say something that what was alleged was not the correct position as I have stated that he is not obligated to do so.”

She said the recordings were not choreographed by the State as alleged by the defense as Chanda was aware of the nolle prosequi and that, it was the DEC officer’s initiative to record him and his former co-accused during their meeting at Sarova hotel.

Magistrate Wishimanga said Chanda’s intention was to ensure that the case is not used as evidence in future and to deprive the judiciary of the case record permanently.

She said Chanda could have talked about any other case but he chose to talk about the case record were he was jointly charged with El-Nahas and Soko were a nolle prosequi was entered.

The Court said Chanda knew were the record was and he assured his former co-accused that when taken to court their matter would end in an acquittal as he had burnt it into ashes at his farm.

Magistrate Wishimanga said though there was no evidence that the record was to be used as evidence, the intention of burning it was to prevent its use or being traced and deprived the Judiciary permanently.

She said public prosecutor Mwansa Makasa had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and found Chanda guilty as charged.

In mitigation his lawyer Timmy Munalula begged for leniency as his client was a first offender who was entitled to it according to principle.

His other lawyer Agrippa Malando who pleaded for the Court’s mercy requested for a non- custodial sentence on reasons that he is a family man to whom family members look up to for survival.

“The now convict is remorseful of his actions and pledges not to re-offend in future. These charges do not tie your hands in having mandatory minimum thereby placing him (Chanda) at your mercy,”said Malando.

“He is a family man to whom family members look up to for livelihood in meting out punishment we consider that you give him a non custodial to prove his remorsefulness him being a public figure the conviction is punishment enough.”

In handing down her sentence magistrate Wishimanga said; “The case record was taken from court for no reason as a lesson to you and would be offenders hereby sentence to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor in count one effective today and in count two I fine you
K5000 in default three months imprisonment.”

However Chanda wants to appeal his conviction and sentencing on five grounds.

He said magistrate Wishimanga erred in law and fact when she convicted him of the subject offenses when there was no evidence.

“The trial Magistrate erred in law and fact when she avoided the evidence of the prosecution which clearly warranted the fact that there was no record stolen,” Chanda argued.

“The trial Court erred in law and in fact when it proceeded to convict the appellant
on a tempered piece of evidence.”

He said magistrate Wishimanga was wrong when she filled in the gaps by introducing
evidence to the record when there was no evidence showing that he stole
the record.

“The court below erred in law and in fact when it convicted the appellant based on a piece of evidence that was tempered with and fully discredited,” said Chanda.

GIVE PF BACK TO EDGAR LUNGU AND TEAM – Fred M’membe

GIVE PF BACK TO EDGAR LUNGU AND TEAM

It is no longer in doubt that Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND have been working determinedly to destroy the PF.

And they have not hidden their evil intentions. They have been brazen about it. The truth is, it is not Mr Miles Sampa, who is holding on to the PF. It’s Mr Hichilema through the Registrar of Societies. They planned things this way, and they would want to maintain the status quo and inconvenience the PF.

If indeed Mr Hichilema and the UPND are true democrats as they claim, let them ask themselves if destroying the PF is good for our multiparty democracy? How will the killing or destruction of PF benefit our democracy and the country?

We have said it before that the competition in any multiparty political dispensation should be a contest to serve the masses and not annihilation like on a battlefield. It’s a pity that Mr Hichilema and the UPND are taking this political competition like it’s a matter of life and death for them.

We urge all who cherish our multiparty democracy not to allow the UPND’s annihilation of the PF or any other political party in this country. And it doesn’t matter whether they hate the PF or like it. The fact is, whether good or bad, it’s not in the place of the UPND to kill the PF. They have no moral or legal right to do so.

Let them give back the PF to its authentic leadership of Mr Edgar Lungu and his team. These are really the authentic leaders of the party and not Mr Sampa and his league. Let them allow the true leadership of the PF to participate in by-elections and mobilise for their party. We need a strong and united PF to strengthen our democracy. Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar!

The PF must also put in a lot of effort and sacrifice to claim their party back. They must realise that we are dealing with a desperate and intolerant regime that is determined to expand authoritarianism. They’re like hungry hyenas on a carcass. They won’t let go easily, but with a lot of effort and pressure, it can be done.

Let the PF live. Give it back to it’s authentic leaders.

UPND Govt Have Forgotten So Easily What Zambians Went Through Thus They Don’t Pay Attention To Dangerous Agendas Championed By Edgar Lungu And His Minions

UPND GOVERNMENT HAVE FORGOTTEN SO EASILY WHAT ZAMBIANS WENT THROUGH THUS THEY DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO DANGEROUS AGENDAS CHAMPIONED BY FORMER PRESIDENT MR. EDGAR LUNGU AND HIS MINIONS

Dear Former President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu,

Today, I pen this open letter in response to your recent statement issued today 16/05/2024 on your official Facebook page, which I find to be deeply troubling and, frankly, absurd. As a concerned citizen of Zambia and someone your brutal government almost killed, I feel compelled to address the issues you raised and offer a different perspective sir.

Firstly, I must express my dismay at your selective memory and apparent hypocrisy. During your tenure as president, you witnessed members of your own government and supporters engaging in divisive rhetoric and actions aimed at certain ethnic groups, particularly the Tonga people. Your silence in the face of such intolerance spoke volumes. Yet now, you have the audacity to decry hate speech and claim to uphold the principle of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

Mr. Lungu, during your presidency, you witnessed members of your cabinet insulting the people of Southern Province simply because your rival, President Hakainde Hichilema, is Tonga. Have you forgotten when your defense minister Davis Chama told the people of Southern Province to produce more children to have a chance at the presidency? Or when some of your associates referred to the same victims as rats and cockroaches? You watched as your thugs killed people like Mapenzi Chibulo, Malesu Mukonka, Vespers and others and you never spoke out as president. Today, you wake up to write such a ridiculous statement. You’re a disappointment to this nation sir.

Your associates, under your command, went and answered the call of nature in HH’s house with impunity. HH has given you space to even move around, yet you have forgotten, sir.

Indeed, I partly blame the UPND government for associating with individuals who oppressed Zambians and killed citizens and even going into amnesty negotiations these are the results. If the UPND government had not so easily forgotten these atrocities and stopped pursuing amnesty for those behind them, you wouldn’t even dare to speak as you have done now Mr. Lungu. Under normal circumstances you should be the most grateful human being because you committed atrocities that you cannot escape if the law was to be taken seriously.

Jackson Chama, motivated by leaders like you, made hate speech statements like, “all Tongas should get jobs right now because when the government changes, they will be kicked out of employment in the government.” According to you, a lawyer by profession, this is acceptable behavior and signifies “One Zambia, One Nation.” Since President Hichilema took office, we have seen job opportunities being given to all Zambians, something you never achieved. Yet, you have the audacity to make such statements.

Your remarks about Dr. Chishimba Kambwili are particularly perplexing. You conveniently ignore the fact that your government supported him in divisive activities that sought to sow discord among Zambians. To now refer to him as “our own” is not only disingenuous but also insulting to those who suffered under his divisive rhetoric. About “why me” it is insane to see a former head of state associating himself to someone who unleashes such insults that leaves our mothers naked. To you it is politics since he is a PF cadre shame on you Mr. Former president.

Yourself, you made demeaning comments about Tongas, such as, “I know a Tonga will be president one day, but not this one,” referring to President Hichilema. This insensitivity contributed to the mistreatment of other tribes under your watch. Despite a Tonga family assisting you and your family, your disdain for Tongas persisted. Successful governance in Zambia requires respecting all tribes, not insulting or demeaning them. Zambians rejected your divisive narrative, and it’s time to accept that. Some of us in our families we have married from all regions and it hates to see a few selfish greedy politicians like you sir wanting to divide the country deliberately simply because you have failed to heal from the terrible loss you never imagined of in your life. You’re a security threat to our nation sir. The earlier UPND government woke up and put you in the right place, the better for our nation’s safety.

To the UPND government, this is what happens when you fail to address those who erred—they begin to believe they are more intelligent and sensible than those trying to progress the country. UPND government, you need to reflect and analyze this situation fairly because sentiments like those from Mr. Lungu can cause anarchy in the country. We were on the brink of serious problems in 2021, but Zambians stood firm. Mr. Lungu is determined to drag the country back to that level violence. UPND government, be extra careful. The people you are treating like angels are ungrateful.

Former President, Mr. Lungu, it is time for you to acknowledge your own shortcomings and the role your administration played in exacerbating ethnic tensions in our country. Rather than perpetuating division and animosity, we need leaders who are committed to fostering unity and inclusivity. I urge you to reflect on the consequences of your words and actions. Zambia belongs to all Zambians, regardless of tribe or ethnicity. It is only through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation that we can truly achieve our collective aspirations for a prosperous and harmonious nation which of course can never be attained by your caliber.

GOD BLESS ZAMBIA

12 Reasons Why a United Zambian Opposition Cannot Win Against President HH in 2026 – Part Two

By Leemans L. Nyirenda

Reason No. 7: The strength of the opposition revolves around Mr. Lungu, who lacks character. Mr. Lungu may possess some semblance of strategy for the 2026 elections but lacks the character to go all the way to win. He has not learned from his past, and he has so many issues to contend with, too numerous to itemize. The man is a crybaby. Whenever one of his family members faces the law, he cries like a baby. Unlike President HH, who endured 127 days of hard labor in prison on his way to State House, Mr. Lungu looks too weak to spend even one week in prison. He would easily break for missing his Jameson, family, jogging, and his luxurious lifestyle. The obstacles that HH underwent on his way to victory would be too heavy a burden for Mr. Lungu to carry if he were to be subject to just 20 percent of it. Resiliency is not part of his DNA. Even his presidency was won through violence and trickery. He lacks the character to navigate the opposition to victory when the going gets tough.

Reason No. 8: Opposition leading candidate Mr. Lungu is haunted by the past and has blood on his hands. Unfortunately for the opposition, Mr. Edgar Lungu has not apologized, and neither has he shown remorse for the killings of innocent lives after commanding his “troops” to kill innocent souls. Just to mention a few names:

  • Chibulo Mapenzi in July 2016 was murdered in cold blood under his command.
  • Gravious Mutapa in February 2015 was killed because he was UPND.
  • Versper Shimuzhila was smoked to death by Mr. Lungu’s “troops” under his command at UNZA in 2018.
  • Lawrence Banda was shot dead on October 6th, 2019, and the killers protected or hidden by his regime,
  • Joseph Kaunda and Nsama Nsama were killed simultaneously after the bullets missed President HH.

Instead of standing with those who were mourning for the loss of their loved ones, Mr. Lungu chose to stand by the killers and murderers and sometimes even promoted the trigger nappy cops like Namuswa after shooting Peter Masani at the High Court. Mr. Lungu is never emotionally affected by the sight of someone wailing. He can only pretend to be. Memories are still fresh, and tears will never dry until he shows remorse and apologizes to the families and Zambians at large.

Reason No. 9: Jail time awaits some prominent opposition party leaders. While every suspect is deemed innocent until proven guilty, most of the opposition leaders are suspects and facing criminal charges for corruption and abuse of office. Some of these leaders will be lucky if they made it to the 2026 polling day. They are putting up appearances, but in private conversations, they are expressing their fears of going to jail. Going into an election of that magnitude with serious allegations of corruption and plunder may just work to their detriment. Zambian voters may resent voting for them on account of wasted votes in the event they went to prison and would not serve their interest. In such a scenario, some voters would even stay away.

Reason No. 10: Opposition is demoralized and fatigued. Since 2021, the opposition has continued to lose ground through loss of National Assembly and Council Chamber seats. The loss of parliamentary seats to the ruling party in Kabushi and Kwacha constituencies sent shivers in the opposition camp while most of the vacancies that have fallen in councils for councilors in most parts of the country have been won by the ruling party UPND. Those voters who have continued to vote for the opposition are now fatigued and demoralized. Their most likely choices in 2026 will be either to join them (UPND) and vote HH or stay away from voting as their votes will be seen as a waste of time and effort.

Reason No. 11: Eligibility Mystery for the opposition. Their top contender is embroiled in his eligibility to stand as a presidential candidate in 2026. The matter revolves around the powers of the constitution court. Has this court possessed the power to review its own decisions? If the answer is yes, then Mr. Lungu’s eligibility to stand in 2026 hangs in the balance as it has been challenged in this court, and judgment is being awaited. The challenge of his eligibility is grounded upon the premise that he served two terms and was sworn in twice as a president of the Republic of Zambia and as such he is not eligible to stand. If the ruling be in favor of the petitioner, it goes without saying that the opposition will get into a scramble for presidency, and hell is expected to break loose. The divisions in opposition are inevitable and more likely.

Reason No. 12: The Zambian opposition is just “Chimbwi no plan.” Apart from being armchair critics on everything President HH does, the opposition does not provide any alternative solutions. They use all manner of jargon they learned in school to pour scorn on the president. “HH has failed,” “HH is a dictator,” “HH is a disaster…” Meanwhile, the same HH is delivering graders for feeder roads to all the constituencies in peri-urban and rural constituencies (Graders began to disappear during MMD rule and disappeared completely after PF took over and hence the poor state of roads in Zambia). HH is delivering desks to all schools across the country so that by the end of 2024 no child will be sitting on the floor. Parents are no longer hassling looking for school fees for their children as education is now free. Teachers, Nurses, and other Medical Personnel are back in schools, clinics, and hospitals in big numbers in all constituencies across the country with an average of 230 trained teachers and 96 nurses and other medical personnel per constituency, with these numbers expected to increase by 2026. No one has ever achieved such performance since Dr. Kaunda left the presidency. By 2026, every constituency will have received K145 million for social and economic development and hence indeed HH’s campaign will be issue-based. The opposition leaders’ challenges will emanate from the fact that they will have nowhere to “sonta epo wabomba” as they themselves coined it? The most unfortunate part for them is that they will not and cannot reverse what President HH has done and doing, neither can they stop his gains. Based on the facts that have been highlighted in this article, it can be argued with some force that the opposition has very little chance to carry the day in 2026 unless something extraordinary happens between now and 2026. Relying on current hardships and events to project what will happen in 2026 is in futility. A united opposition cannot, therefore, win against HH in 2026.

KALABA WELCOMES MOVE TO APPOINT EX – VEEPS AS SPECIAL ENVOYS

KALABA WELCOMES MOVE TO APPOINT EX – VEEPS AS SPECIAL ENVOYS

… asks President Hichilema to present this decision to parliament to avoid repercussions in future as was the case with former ministers who were asked to refund their salaries.

LUSAKA,FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2024 [SMART EAGLES]

CITIZENS First President Harry Kalaba has welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s move to appoint former Republican Vice Presidents as his special envoys.

Mr. Kalaba has told Smart Eagles that it is high time Government started taking care of those who served the country by holding the office of Vice President.

Mr. Kalaba however advised President Hichilema to present his decision before Parliament and ensure that the issue of benefits accruing to the former Vice Presidents does not result in them being called to pay back to the state as was the case for the former ministers who had to refund their salaries.

The Former Foreign Affairs Minister also said the terms of accruing these benefits should also be clear just like it is for the Office of the former Republican President

” I welcome the support that President Hakainde Hichilema is providing to our former Vice Presidents through government’s engagement of former Vice Presidents as Special Envoys. Indeed it is about time our government started taking care of those who have served the country by holding the office of Vice President,” Mr. Kalaba said.

The CF leader also noted and observed that the “special envoy appointments” and functional missions seems to work and favour the two former Vice Presidents Mr. Enock Kavindele and Dr Nevers Mumba, who coincidentally have been issuing statements that akin to them being card carrying members of the UPND.

” If they are special envoys and earning 80% of an Incumbent Vice Presidents salary, should they be this active in politics? The other issue of concern is that today this country has more than two surviving former Vice Presidents, is their any reason why former Vice President Kavindele and Former Vice President Mumba are the only beneficiaries of near “stately” treatment?,” Mr. Kalaba asked.

“Furthermore Dr Nevers Mumba is still president of the MMD. Should he be getting these benefits which are clearly Vice President’s benefits masked as Special Envoy when he is still active in politics? If that is the case why has government withdrawn the benefits that are due to former President Lungu?,”.

Mr. Kalaba says the Citizens First party demands an all inclusive, impartial and more comprehensively well harmonized approach to the award of benefits.

“… and we call that the same be extended to some other leaders who do not enjoy any benefits besides having served this nation with honor and distinction,” he said.

WE ARE IN A MESS: THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE; NOTHING IS WORKING- ANTONIO MWANZA

ANTONIO MWANZA WRITES:-

WE ARE IN A MESS: THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE; NOTHING IS WORKING:

1. INFLATION
Annual inflation has increased to 13.8%from 12.9%. This means on average, prices of all goods and services have gone up 13.8%.
ELECTRICITY TARIFFS
Electricity tariffs have commutatively gone up by 18.2% within the last 8 months.

PER CAPITA
Zambia is one of the POOREST countries in the whole world with a per capita of $1,468 dollars against a recommended average of $10,000.

POVERTY
Poverty levels have WORSENED from 54.4% in 2015 to now 60%. This means 60 out of every 100 Zambians are poor.

INCIDENCE OF POVERTY BY PROVINCE

Western : 82.2%
Northern: 78%
Luapula : 77.3%

Copperbelt : 35.9%

MONETARY POLICY RATE (MPR)
The Bank of Zambia has just increased the MPR to 13.5%

Here are the implications:

1. High MPR means higher interest costs has led to increased debt burdens for individuals and businesses borrowing money.

2. High MPR has resulted in higher monthly payments, causing financial stress and making it challenging for borrowers to meet their financial obligations.

3. High MPR has reduced consumers’ purchasing power as more of their income goes towards servicing debt rather than spending on goods and services.

4. High MPR is also affecting investment decisions, as borrowing costs have increased, reducing the profitability of investment opportunities.

5. In the broader economy, high MPR is contributing to economic slowdowns by reducing consumer spending and business investment.

Overall, high MPR has significant negative implications for both individuals and the economy as a whole.

STATUTORY RESERVE RATIO (SRR)

The Bank of Zambia has again increased the SRR to 26%

Here are the implications:

1.High SRR means banks are required to hold a larger portion of their deposits as reserves, reducing the amount of money available for lending and investment in the economy.

2. With less money available for lending, banks have raised interest rates to compensate for the reduced liquidity, leading to higher borrowing costs for businesses and individuals.

3. Higher borrowing costs and reduced access to credit is dampening economic activity, as businesses is delayed or cancelled investment projects, and consumers are cutting back on spending.

4. High SRR is also affecting investment decisions, as higher borrowing costs and reduced economic activity is making certain investments less attractive or feasible.

5. While high SRR may reduce inflationary pressure by tightening liquidity,it has led to inflation as businesses are passing on higher borrowing costs to consumers through increased prices.

6. Excessively high SRR levels are straining banks’ balance sheets and are leading to financial instability as banks are struggling to meet reserve requirements or if there’s a run on deposits, for example,Investrust is gone.

The biggest problem is that they have no solutions whatsoever.

PRIORITIZE NATIONAL DIALOGUE TO DE-ESCALATE POLITICAL SCHISMS- Faston Mwale

PRIORITIZE NATIONAL DIALOGUE TO DE-ESCALATE POLITICAL SCHISMS
By Faston Mwale, SP – MCC

The simultaneous increase in the retail price of fuel and in electricity tariffs by monstrous margins has induced shock in the population that is already battling with the high cost of living. The booing that greeted the head of state at Heroes stadium was an expression of strong disapproval to the ever-rising cost living triggered by monthly upward reviews of fuel prices. Recently, the Energy Regulation Board increased the fuel pump price by a whooping K5 per litre.

As if not enough, days later the Energy Regulation raised electricity tariffs by 10 percent triggering shock waves in the population. The fit of raging anger of the masses is on various social media platforms and in the daily tabloids.

Today, the main subject of conversation on buses, stations, markets, churches, in homes, in stadia and in many private and public spaces is about how the people have been reduced to foolish victims of deception in the deceptive politics of the UPND government. One thing is clear. It is that beneath the surface of apparent calm and tranquility, there is a raging storm of anger triggered by reckless tinkering with the lives of the struggling masses.

Reacting to the booing bout at Heroes Stadium, the President lamented about the “arrows” thrown at him. He said that he does not believe in courts but in dialogue. Ironically, it is President HH and the UPND that do not want to dialogue over burning national issues. Channels of communication and dialogue with the leaders in opposition, for example, are non-existent.

Seven months have gone by since Dr. Fred M’membe and other opposition leaders called for a national ‘indaba’ an idea which government has ignored. Leaders from the opposition political parties, civil society, the church including traditional leaders are a necessary cog in governance. Ignore them at your own peril.

In the context of the wholesale national meltdown of the power supply, education, health, water and sanitation, transport and energy, what development can the UPND government talk about? By not taking steps to facilitate national dialogue to hammer out a collective position on how to resolve the challenges that have befallen the country, I am afraid, the UPND will suffer humiliation in public. No one likes to be booed.

Dialogue must be a top notch priority. It is an imperative necessity for a country broken by deep political schisms instigated by divisive governance. There is need to de-escalate political tension in the country so that our people can re-collect themselves and recover the “one Zambia; one nation principle for collective nation building.

The governed must love their leaders and those in leadership have a moral duty to reciprocate.

Lungu says prosecution of hate speech crimes is ethnic injustice

Lungu says prosecution of hate speech crimes is ethnic injustice

FORMER president Edgar Lungu has branded the prosecution of some of his supporters for hate speech as retrogressive regionalism that undermines “One Zambia, One Nation”.

In a statement on his Facebook page yesterday, Lungu cited the case of 30-year old PF cadre Jackson Chama who is serving a one year jail sentence for hate speech.

In February this year, Chama went ballistic on Tiktok where he declared the people of Southern Province unfit for government positions.

In the rant, Chama charged that; “no youth from Southern Province will be allowed to take up any government positions in the future because southerners are incapable to run the country as seen by your elders who have ruined your chances by their failure to run the nation. So If we just hear that you are from Southern, we will not give you a chance.”

“So your Elder brother who is currently sitting will be the first and last. Once he leaves, it’s over for you all, so if it is working, you are better off starting now while your elder is still ruling. Better you join the OP, Zambia Police, Army now because once we come, you are all gone, we will chase you,” spewed Chama in his video.

Acting on a report by an aggrieved person in Kalomo District, police moved in arrested Chama who was in charge of TikTok account “@JacksonChama2” for the violation Section 65 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, a law designed to silence the digital sirens of hate.

Chama readily pleaded guilty and was handed a one jail term.

Lungu also cited the case of vulgar Tiktoker ‘Why Me’ who is detained in Livingstone on hate speech charges as well as the conviction of Chishimba Kambwili who resorted to anti-Tonga tribalism in the run up to the 2021 elections as examples of “ethnic injustice”.

Without discussing or condemning the utterances of the three people he cited in his statement Lungu said their prosecution was tribal.

Although runway opposition leader Chilufya Tayali has an active court case of Hate Speech against the Bemba speaking people, Lungu claimed that government was creating an impression that the crime was only being committed against the Tonga speaking people while other tribes have never suffered similar injuries.

“What we are witnessing today is retrogressive regionalism that undermines “One Zambia, One Nation,” Lungu stated.

“By tolerating this ethnic injustice, President Hakainde Hichilema is sowing a bad seed that may germinate into tribal violence and regional conflict soon or later. Any responsible president in State House should know that “this targeted ethnic oppression and tribal discrimination is recipe for political trouble for Zambia in future,” Lungu added.

He said as a former president and opposition leader, he would be guilty of a greater crime or sin if he remained silent in the face of “such atrocities against our people, against our Zambian constitution”.

“By remaining silent “you are creating a monster in President HH that will bite everyone soon or later”. As a Zambian, please, speak out against this form of divisive nationalism and political injustice,” said Lungu

THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE IN THE COUNTRY!- MPNVP

THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE IN THE COUNTRY!
MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
The current ongoing situation in the Country is extremely very worrying! Our leaders seem to be lost. Honestly they have run out of ideas.
Things are getting worse. We are headed for a calamitous future. The Administration of President Hakainde Hichilema is not inspiring at all! We have no hope of regaining the economic stature favorable for human survival.

Local businesses are in a mess. The Government has prioritized foreign businesses at the expense of its own people. The entire Lusaka Town Centre for instance is now paralyzed completely. The former busy trading centre is now a white elephant. Traders simply go for sunbathing while others spend time playing games like draft. Indians, Lebanese, Chinese and Tanzanians have automatically taken over the supply of hardware’s.

These people are allowed trading as wholesalers and retailers at the same time. They order cheap building materials from China while our local traders order expensive and durable building materials from South Africa. It is shocking that even the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) employees are seen buying cheap building materials from places like West Gate without demanding for receipts. These foreign nationals are reaping our monies with impunity without remitting any tax to the Government.

The same situation is taking place across the Country. The Mines have been taken over by foreign nationals who are exploiting our precious minerals without paying any tax incentives. The Chinese have built big shops in almost all districts of our Country suffocating local traders. One wonders about the relevance of some Government Ministries like Ministry of Small Scale and Medium Enterprises, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Youths, the CEEC, ZDA and several other Institutions..

Our people have become destitute and vagabonds (homeless) in their own Country while foreigners are allowed devouring our natural resources. Block moulding, Chicken rearing, Mushroom production, Supply of goods, Mining, Timber trading and Construction businesses are usurped by foreign nationals under our watch.

The President and his Administration are busy cutting deals at Community House and are holding big events at State House and other lucrative venues simply to discuss how to reap our Country!

We need to begin mobilizing now so that we can reclaim for our national cake. This is the time to demand for what belongs to us! The Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles (MPNVP) will not remain quiet and stand akimble while some unpatriotic trends keep taking place.
MPNVP – WE ARE GENUINE WATCHDOGS OF OUR NATION!
