Friends becoming Foe; the Case of Vladmir Putin and a Renegade Mercenary Group Leader

The most difficult disease for the body to fight is cancer, because it is the body’s own cells that become abnormal and rapidly divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissues and organs.

Hitler was at the verge of capturing the World until he attacked his ally state, Russia.

Earlier In August 1939, as Europe slid towards another world war, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty.

But the more territories Hitler conquered the more he enviously looked back at Russia. After the fall of France Hitler ordered plans to be drawn up for an invasion of the Soviet Union. He intended to destroy what he saw as Stalin’s ‘Jewish Bolshevist’ regime and establish a Nazi hegemony.

That was the beginning of the end for Hitler. He spread his military might too thin between the eastern and western frontiers. He turned a loyal ally into an enemy.

In this fresh case Vladmir Putin has made similar mistakes. To overcome the weaknesses and corruption of his top army brass and army command, he chose to empower an outsourced mercenary military group, something outlawed in Russia.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Russian military contractor Wagner Group, became prominent with his mercenary outfit’s sponsored military ventures in Central Africa, Mali, Sudan and recently he scored extra-ordinary military successes in Ukraine.

The trouble with mercenaries is that they come at a price and it might be difficult to completely control them, and your enemy can buy them at a higher price and their venom can be directed against you and cause fatal wounds like a cancer. Like they say an enemy is harder to fight that an external threat.

Now Prigzhin has vowed to march on Moscow and has threatened to capture it for himself, thereby turning his guns against his own bosses and his own country. A coup d’état in the making.

Vladimir Putin has this morning addressed the nation and warned that those on “path of treason” or armed rebellion will be “punished” after the head of the Wagner paramilitary group said his troops had taken control of military facilities in two Russian cities, plunging the country into crisis.

This is a defining and existential threat against Putin and the Russian State. While he faces the military might of the West in the Ukraine proxy war,he now has to deal with a cancer he helped created and grew.

Leaders usually make these established mistakes. Divide and Rule. They create Kitchen Cabinets, Parallel Intelligence units and parallel advisory groups.

Divide and rule is used to gain and maintain power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy.
In the end, infighting, mistrust, rumours, favouritism weakens the leader as he fails to unite and command these weakened entities.

The Wagner Mercenary Group may change the path and course of this war to the detriment of the gains that Russia has made so far and the threat against Putin’s own hold on power. Now Putin has to rely on his own army that he weakened through this careless Divide and Rule technic!

IT FEELS GOOD TO BE ZAMBIAN UNDER PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA…***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

Let’s wake up and work hard in our lives and contribute to economic development in this country , we can manage to reduce total dependancy through innovation and diversture programs using investment ideas at a small scale .This is the mindset which should preoccupy our lives to prevent our minds from being eroded by people that are critics of any good because of wanting power by their means. The former president once refered president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA as a calculator , these expositions can prove that our president is an intellectual combined with a leadership gifted background that is sober and principled .

Zambians at a large scale have access to state resources in many avenues which the govt has created , through bursaries , loans , increased CDF allocations on projects and many opportunities that were not expected through a frame work of policies that are directly benefiting zambians . Many issues have come into effect which includes payment of outstanding dues for pensioners, creating a flexible system for those retiring tomorrow , 20% NAPSA partial withdrawals a plus on the people of zambia , no political violence , it is pleasing to live in Zambia under the UPND leadership . Zambia is back because what has happened before the lapse of two years under the new Dawn govt gives confidence that zambians are under securable powers .

From the time the UPND govt came into office ,only the people of zambia chose to be patient with the leadership , this is the culture which is known among zambians , that is why govts are given a long rope to hang themselves , a govt which has its own distinguishable Political DNA like the UPND that has a positive vision which comprise maximum attention on the plight of citizens , the UPND party will settle in power for quite some time given the excellence and charismatic approach to governance issues which the people of zambia desired for a long time . Who is going to take away a smart govt of this kind which has been working with less rhetorical responses to irrelevant political critics , a govt that is practical on the concepts and other policy details is very visible . A govt that keeps the people under check and thinking beyond their challenges is dear to the people of zambia ,unless one is radicalised and simply needs political rehab . God bless mother Zambia.

I was invited to join ill-fated Titan submersible – Nigerian billionaire politician says

Ned Nwoko, a Nigerian politican has revealed how national duties prevented him from joining the ill-fated Titan submersible adventure.

Nwoko, a Senator representing Delta North in the country’s South South zone, is known to be friends with one of the deceased persons aboard the submersible, Captain Hermish Harding.

He posted on his social media handles on June 23 that he had lost a friend and business partner, detailing a number of past adventures that they had undertaken.

On the issue of the widely-reported upon submersible and the invitation extended to him by Harding, he wrote: “he also invited me on his space shuttle last year and this very Titan ill-fated adventure but I was tied down with national duties.”

Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have been mocking the account of Nwoko with some asking what national assignment in particular had obstructed him.

I have lost a very dear friend and business partner. Captain hermish Harding. We both went on a very dangerous expedition to the Southpole Antarctica few years back.

He was a gulf stream pilot who flew across the world in a record breaking expedition by Guinness world record for circumnavigation of the earth some years ago.

He descended into the Mariana. he also invited me on his space shuttle last year and this very Titan ill-fated adventure but I was tied down with national duties.

Above all he was a partner on the various researches into eradication of malaria in Africa project. He was very enthusiastic about it and always gave his support at every given opportunity.

His last message to me was this last Sunday when he told me they were ready to dive to the titanic if the weather permits. He loved adventure and challenges. My heart bleeds for his dear wife and kids who have become family friends over the years. We will surely miss his wealth of experience.

Reuters report about the accident

A deep-sea submersible carrying five people on a voyage to the century-old wreck of the Titanic was found in pieces from a “catastrophic implosion” that killed everyone aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday, ending a multinational five-day search for the vessel.

A robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered a debris field from the submersible Titan on Thursday morning on the seabed some 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic, 2 1/2 miles (4 km) beneath the surface, in a remote corner of the North Atlantic, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger told reporters.

The Titan, operated by the U.S.-based company OceanGate Expeditions, had been missing since it lost contact with its surface support ship on Sunday morning about an hour, 45 minutes into what should have been a two-hour dive to the world’s most famous shipwreck.

“The debris field here is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vehicle,” Mauger said.

Even before the Coast Guard’s press conference, OceanGate issued a statement saying there were no survivors among the five men aboard the Titan, including the company’s founder and chief executive officer, Stockton Rush, who was piloting the Titan.

The four others were British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani-born businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, both British citizens; and French oceanographer and renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who had visited the wreck dozens of times.

The world’s financial architecture is failing Africa – Adesina

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, recently sounded an ominous alarm bell. The Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to significantly reduce poverty around the world and create a better quality of life for all, are off track, he warned.

And so French President Emmanuel Macron called a global conference in Paris this month to address getting the 2030 SDG targets back on course. As world leaders from Barbados to Kenya to Germany gather, there are seven things they must focus on. This blueprint for prosperity is too important to let slide.

The global financial architecture is failing Africa and developing countries. Before the sneak attack of the pandemic, progress in achieving the SDGs was mixed, with a $2.5 trillion annual SDG financing gap for developing countries. Africa alone will need $1.3 trillion annually to achieve its sustainable development needs by 2030.

Yet, available financing is limited and insufficient to make up the difference and tackle global challenges from food insecurity to rising debt. According to the United Nations, some $3 trillion to $5 trillion per year needs to be mobilized to achieve the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Our global financial architecture must decisively tackle climate change, which is devastating Africa’s economies. The African Development Bank estimates that Africa loses $7 billion to $15 billion annually due to climate change, which is projected to rise to $45 billion to $50 billion annually by 2040. To reverse effects such as water basins drying up across Africa’s Sahel, cyclones causing death and destruction to regions, and floods taking over whole city areas, Africa needs an average of $2.7 trillion by 2030. Such funding will be essential to support the continent’s climate resilience and a just energy transition.

The financial architecture must tackle global debt crises. The structure of Africa’s debt has changed dramatically. While bilateral debt accounts for 25% of debt compared with 52% in 2000, commercial debt accounts for 43% of total debt, compared with 17% in 2000. The expansion and fragmentation of the creditor base complicates debt resolution by the Bretton Woods Institutions.

Debt resolution in Africa, especially outside of the Paris Club, has often been disorderly and protracted, with costly economic consequences. To avert future debt crises, high debt resolution costs, and legal complications, the international community needs to push for enhanced transparency and global coordination among creditors.

Global contingency financing has to start working for Africa. The Special Drawing Rights issued by the International Monetary Fund provided significant resources to help countries deal with an ever-shrinking fiscal space. However, of the $650 billion of SDRs issued by the IMF in 2021, Africa received only $33 billion or 5%. More funding from this source could finance a plethora of development projects across the entire African continent — in education, health, agriculture, infrastructure and much more.

The African Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank have devised a solution for developed countries to provide long-term SDR loans to multilateral development banks (MDBs) in the form of hybrid capital, combined with a Liquidity Support Agreement. This will allow the MDBs to leverage the SDRs by 3-4 times to meet the greater financing needs. The solution has now met the IMF Reserve Asset Status requirements in terms of creditworthiness and liquidity. This should be speedily implemented.

Tackling development challenges calls for a change in the business models of multilateral financial institutions. Global pension funds and institutional investors, for example, have more than $145 trillion of assets under management. Allowing Africa to access these massive resources will require significant changes to these businesses, from the deployment of more risk guarantee facilities, to the expanded use of synthetic securitization to leverage balance sheets, to the transfer of some sovereign and non-sovereign assets to the private sector.

Enhanced leveraging of private-sector financing for development is critical. Calls for multilateral development banks to do more in this regard are timely. The reality is that MDBs depend largely on callable capital of which only a small share is paid in. This limits effective risk capital that can be used to hedge and leverage private-sector financing at scale, due to strict prudential limits that all MDBs must respect to keep crucial triple A credit ratings. There should therefore be a significant increase in paid-in capital for multilateral development banks.

Regional efforts should be promoted to tackle systemic risks in Africa. Africa is the only region of the world that does not have liquidity buffers to protect it against shocks, whether natural disasters, commodity price volatility or health crises. The African Development Bank and the African Union are working together to establish an African Financial Stability Mechanism to allow countries to mutualize our funds and help avoid the spillover effects that come from global pandemics and other external shocks. Other homegrown mechanisms would be welcome.

Ultimately, what leaders gathered in Paris must recognize is that a re-engineered global financial architecture — one that is more responsive, inclusive and accountable — is what’s needed to support the accelerated development of the world.

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT HH, THE FINANCE MINISTER & ZAMBIA 🇿🇲 FOR THE $6.3BN DEBT RESTRUCTURING DEAL CLINCHED- Miles Sampa

Miles Sampa
CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT HH, THE FINANCE MINISTER & ZAMBIA 🇿🇲 FOR THE $6.3BN DEBT RESTRUCTURING DEAL CLINCHED

…Zikomo 🙏🏾 China for your favourable response on the matter

I join Hon Bowman Lusambo the senior member of the PF in commending President HH but I endovour to add the Finance Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane for clinching Zambia’s ‘do or die’ debt restructuring deal.

It was delicate and required a lot of patience and tactical engagements at various top levels of the global community. Zambia’s good current foreign policy and diplomacy is yielding tangible results.

The 3 years extension on principle repayment will give Zambia the much needed room to breath and navigate out of the current economic challenges. It would have been good if some hair cut of some write off had need realized as well but as it is said ‘a bird in hand is better than two in the air’.

The important thing for now is that the first step has been accomplished, our creditors are on board and the IMF bailout package that was on ice can now commence. It will then trigger more FDIs and cheaper finances into Zambia for our private sector.

The 3 years gives the current government some time to come up with some self reliant economic ‘marshal plan’. We have no choice but to come up with the money to pay the debt in 2026.

The quickest source of tangible revenue for the government is already God given to us, but located undeground on Zambian soils. All our copper and gold mines need to start firing on all cylinders. These are KCM, Mopani, Kasenseli and indeed the sugirite mines fields in Luapula. No more time for ‘talk talk’ in this sector but action and results.

China is our biggest creditor and was key to the successful debt relief talks for Zambia. I thank them for playing ball in our favour.

Again, I join Hon Bowman Lusambo 😊…and other Zambians in congratulating President HH and the Finance Minister for good job done in Paris yesterday. Although there is a lot more you can do better on the domestic front, your foreign policy is commendable and shining example for majority countries in Africa and other continents. The $6.3 billion foreign debt restructuring deal is a milestone for Zambia 🇿🇲 and our great grand children.

Miles Sampa sues Max Chongu for saying he killed Ruth Mbandu

Miles sues Max Chongu for saying he killed Ruth Mbandu

MATERO member of parliament Miles Sampa has sued his PF counterpart Maxwell Choongu for defamation of character.

The suit emanates from Choongu’s claims that Sampa was behind the gruesome murder of former NIPA student Ruth Mbandu back in 2012.

Sampa is demanding an apology from Chongu on a media platform that has wide coverage.

In his Statement of claim, Sampa indicated that he is among the nine PF presidential hopefuls who intend to replace Edgar Lungu at the party’s next extraordinary convention.

He said Choongu launched a campaign to vilify him on different social media platforms especially in a WhatsApp group called ZAMAC-Corruption where he has published falsehoods against him knowing that the acts would lower the his reputation in the eyes of right thinking members of society.

Sampa said Choongu has been discrediting his presidential bid by insinuating that only halfwits would vote for him.

He said on the said platform Chongu using innuendos questioned who was behind the killing of the NIPA student.

“The said words in their natural and ordinary meaning meant and were understand to mean that the plantiff murdered Ruth Mbandu and is not fit to hold the office of President of the Republic of Zambia,” Sampa said.

The lawmaker indicated that the words published by Choongu were false as he has never met Mbandu in his life.

Sampa said the PF cadre published sensational statements against him knowing they were false and would dim his prospects of assuming the office of President.

“The plainiffs good reputation has seriously been injured and the plainiff has suffered considerable stress and anxiety, brought into public scandal, odium and contempt in the eyes of right thinking members of the public,” said Sampa.

He is seeking a declaration that the words published by Choongu on several social media platforms are defamatory to him.

Sampa wants an order of the Court compelling Chongu to retract the words complained of and published by him.

He also wants damages for defamation and any other relief the Court may deem fit.

Lusaka Immigration arrest Chinese couple found with sex slaves

AUTHORITIES in Lusaka have a arrested a Chinese couple who had been holding five women they used as sex slaves.

Lusaka’s Roma area witnessed an intense scene of justice when three Chinese nationals were nabbed in a thrilling undercover operation conducted by the Department of Immigration in Zambia.

The suspects, Peng Pan and Yuqi Jia, found themselves in the hot seat after concerned citizens blew the whistle on their alleged involvement in a sex trafficking ring.

Responding swiftly to the tip-off, a team of immigration officers, accompanied by other security wings, descended upon a popular restaurant and pub in the heart of Roma.

As the officers stealthily explored the premises, they stumbled upon a hidden underworld of exploitation. Behind closed doors, they found five Vietnamese women, aged between 17 and 31, held against their will.

Condoms lay discarded in the rooms, revealing the sinister intentions of their captors.

To their surprise, when asked for their passports, the Vietnamese women pointed the officers in the direction of none other than Peng Pan and Yuqi Jia.

But the audacious couple attempted to deny any association with the passports.

Pan and Jia, who denied having the passports were discovered with two blank passports belonging to unknown individuals.

The Vietnamese alleged that Pan and Jia had invited them to Zambia to work but confiscated their passports upon arrival, and offered them to clients for sex at a rate of US$400 per night.

According a statement released by Immigrations Department public relations officer Namati Nshinka, explicit video footage was found on one of the Vietnamese’s phones, showing Pan coaching them in sexual techniques.

Nshika further disclosed that Gang Liu, another Chinese national who owns the property where the restaurant and pub were located, was subsequently apprehended after being identified in the explicit video clips.

“(Liu) was apprehended at Immigration Headquarters where he had gone to inquire about his compatriots. He was taken into custody after being identified as one of the persons in the explicit video clips.,” said Nshika.

He said suspects are currently in detention pending further investigations.

Arsenal star Thomas Partey has reportedly been offered $200 million to play in the Saudi Pro League next season

0

Arsenal star Thomas Partey has been reportedly been offered an astronomical contract worth $200 million to play in the Saudi Pro League next season.

The 30-year-old midfielder is the latest high-profile footballer to be offered the chance to move to Saudi Arabia, with four of the league’s top clubs having recently been acquired by the nation’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in majority takeovers.

The only outgoing involving a Premier League club at present is the deal for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves to join Al Hilal for a fee of around €48 million. N’Golo Kante will join Al Ittihad from Chelsea, but only upon the expiry of his contract next week.

It has now been reported that the league wants to bring in Partey – and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr are said to be among three clubs who could sign him.

Partey to Saudi Arabia?

According to journalist Ibrahim Sannie Daara, founder of news outlet Ghanasoccernet, Partey has been offered a contract worth $200 million to play in the Saudi Pro League for two years.

As a result, it is added he will earn an annual, tax-free salary of $100 million over his time in the league if he chooses to accept the deal.

Daara also claims that three Saudi Arabian clubs – Al Ahli, Al Nassr and Al Khaleej.

Moving to Al Nassr would see Partey play alongside Ronaldo, who moved to the Saudi Pro League on a free transfer in January after his Manchester United contract was mutually terminated.

The Portuguese legend’s arrival preceded the current flurry of top stars moving to play in the nation’s top division, with eye-watering sums of money offered to players.

As per 90min, Kante will earn £21.5 million per season at Al Ittihad, while fellow new signing Karim Benzema’s earnings stand at a staggering £172 million per year.

But not every player has been tempted to make the move, however. Son Heung-Min was reportedly of interest to Saudi Arabian clubs, with Al Ittihad launching a £51 million bid.

But the South Korea international told local journalist Sungmo Lee that he wants to continue playing for Tottenham and start preparing for the new Premier League season.

‘Kasukuwere condemns Mnangagwa’s sons for looting gold in Zimbabwe’

Former cabinet Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has castigated President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s sons accusing them of using their father’s position to loot the country’s natural resources.

Kasukuwere who is seeking to dislodge Mnangagwa in the upcoming elections after successfully filing his nomination papers at the High Court on Wednesday through his lawyer and chief election adviser Jacqueline Sande, believes that the Zanu-PF leader has failed to unite the country amd resuscitate the economy.

Addressing a press conference in South Africa on Thursday afternoon, the former Zanu-PF political commissar accused Mnangagwa’s sons of looting the country’s natural resources.

“Yes Mnangagwa has failed. He has no knowledge of how to do it. And if you look at how processes are done where just a few are making it, taking over all resources. His children run around the country.

“Wherever there is a gold opportunity that has been discovered, they make sure they are there. We take a great exception to that behavior,” he said.

Asked if he was not afraid of being arrested if he lands in Harare, Kasukuwere said:

“What we have in Zimbabwe is a care-taker President. We’re all equal now. The only day that we will have a difference between myself, Mnangagwa and Chamisa, I don’t know others but these two are somewhere behind my numbers, is after the 23rd of August.

“After counting and somebody will emerge as a winner then you can start arresting others. But the game is not about arresting people, let’s go to the ground and campaign.”

Kasukuwere further assured his supporters that he will be coming to Zimbabwe to campaign physically all over the country.

“I can’t campaign in South Africa. South Africa is not in an election season. I’m on my way to Zimbabwe. I’m going to be in Harare to visit each and every district in my country. That is where my campaign is going to be. We will soon be launching our campaign in Zimbabwe,” he added.

Kasukuwere is among the exiled former top Zanu-PF officials who fled the country in November 2017 after Mnangagwa ousted the late former President Robert Mugabe through a military coup.

Speaker Nelly Muti warns dodging MPs getting K1,500 without shouting “yaah yaah”

Speaker warns dodging MPs getting K1,500 without shouting “yaah yaah”

SOME members of parliament are dodging the House after logging in their details for payment of their K1,500 daily sitting allowances, Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Muti has revealed.

After attending Parliament and shouting “yaah yaah”, lawmakers are entitled to K1,500 for each sitting they attend and with four sittings a week, each MP gets K6,000 per week.

However, some parliamentarians have devised secondary school dodging tactics of escaping Parliament after logging in their details to be marked present.

Speaker Mutti sounded a warning to the crooked lawmakers just before proceedings took off yesterday afternoon.

“Before we start, I have one announcement to make, and those people who came in after we recited the National Anthem, please pay particular attention. Honorable members, it has been observed, firstly, that some members deliberately come late for sittings of the House, both at the start of each sitting, and following a health break,” Speaker Mutti said.

She said the situation has affected a quorum of the House, and thereby slowing down the amount of business for the House to transact each day.

“Secondly, it has been observed that some members have a tendency or have developed a tendency of leaving the House as soon as they log in their credentials into the electronic system and the sole intention of such conduct appears to be the payment of sitting allowance, even though they do not attend the full sitting. Sadly, such practice will also affect the committee setting,” she said.

“And in view of the above, and in accordance with standing order 242A which requires MP’s to be in the House a few minutes before the appointed time for the commencement of the sitting of the House and after each health break.”

Mutti informed the House that in order to curb such corrupt high school behaviour, attendance registers will continue to take names before each sitting and after the sitting in order to ensure that the payments for the sitting allowance is given to members that attended the full session.

“Additionally, honorable members are urged to stop abstain from merely logging in and thereafter leave the House for the rest of the sittng. I therefore, urge all honorable members to be punctual,” said Mutti.

As PF We Are Not Happy With HH For Reaching An Agreement With Creditors To Restructure Our Debt- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

0

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

What Did Zambia Seek? What Did It Obtain?

…Obtained extension of the maturities on its loans to 20 years….

WHAT DID ZAMBIA SEEK?

Zambia was asking for a debt-write off or debt forgiveness of more than $8billion on its $14.2 billion and a restructure of the rest on its foreign debts owed to Chinese lenders, private bond-holders and other creditors, according to an IMF analysis.

This restructuring widely seen as a test of Beijing’s willingness to absorb losses on loans it has extended to developing countries.

WHAT DID ZAMBIA GET

Zambia reached an agreement in principle to restructure $6.3 billion of debt with bilateral lenders, setting a precedent for a growing list of countries struggling to service their liabilities.

Details remain unclear, beyond that the creditors led by China and France agreed to extend the maturities on their loans over some 20 years, with a three-year grace period.

The IMF wants official creditors to outline in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Zambian Government, specific modalities of how they intend to deliver debt relief aligned with the parameters of a $1.3 billion 38-month Extended Credit Facility programme signed off by the fund’s board in August 2022.

Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement:

“I warmly welcome Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane’s announcement that the Zambian authorities have reached an agreement with their official creditors on a debt treatment, consistent with the objectives of the IMF-supported program. This unique and innovative agreement specifies both a baseline and a contingent treatment that would be automatically triggered if the assessment of Zambia’s economic performance and policies improves.

“This agreement paves the way for the completion of the first review of Zambia’s three-year Extended Credit Facility Arrangement, which is helping put Zambia on a path toward sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.”

“I look forward to the Executive Board taking up this review in the coming weeks and the continuation of our productive collaboration with Zambia in the period ahead.”

Minister Of Information And Media And Chief Govt Spokesperson On Media Reports That Seizure Of Properties Belonging To The Former First Family Is A Witch-hunt

0

STATEMENT BY HON. MAKOZO CHIKOTE, MP, ACTING MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON ON MEDIA REPORTS THAT SEIZURE OF PROPERTIES BELONGING TO THE FORMER FIRST FAMILY IS A WITCH-HUNT

Government wishes to express its disappointment with the Patriotic Front (PF) party for alleging that the confiscation and seizure of properties belonging to members of the former first family by law enforcement agencies is an abuse of authority.

Such claims not only demonstrate a lack of understanding of the situation but also serve to undermine government’s efforts to uphold justice and accountability.

Government, therefore, finds such claims baseless and politically motivated attempt to discredit its legitimate actions. It is essential to separate political bias from the pursuit of justice and allow the investigative process to unfold independently and impartially.

Further, the reasoning behind the assertion is extremely flawed and a deliberate ploy by the former ruling party to mislead the nation.

It is highly deceptive of the PF, through its Information and Publicity chairperson Raphael Nakachinda and his junior, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba, to assert that the confiscation and seizure of properties, believed to be proceeds of crime, was an abuse of authority.

The reasoning that the confiscation and seizure could only be effected after it was proved beyond all reasonable doubt that a crime had been committed in their acquisition is not supported by the applicable law, the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act No. 19 of 2010.

Zambians may recall that the Supreme Court of Zambia, in the case of the People v Austin Chisangu Liato (2015), had an opportunity to address four fundamental questions pertaining to the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act, namely:

  1. Whether a predicate offence had to first be established in order to secure a conviction of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime contrary to section 71(1);
  2. What ‘reasonable suspicion’ entails for purposes of proving the ingredients of the offence under section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act;
  3. What the requisite standard of proof is to prove the reasonable suspicion under section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act in order to secure a conviction; and
  4. Whether section 71(2) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act shifts the burden to prove the offence under section 71(1) from the prosecution to the accused person.
Contrary to the misleading narrative by the PF, the Supreme Court held that:
  5. To secure a conviction under section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act no predicate offence needs to be proved;
  6. ‘Reasonable Suspicion’ under section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act means a state of conjecture or surmise, where proof is lacking;
  7. Proof beyond reasonable doubt or reasonable suspicion was not contemplated or intended when section 71(1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act was formulated. The standard of proof is on a balance of probability; and
  8. Section 71 (2) does not impose any obligation on the accused person to prove any ingredient of the offence under section 71 (1), but it does afford the accused an opportunity to explain the absence of reasonable grounds for the suspicion that the property he was found in possession of under section 71 (1) were proceeds of crime.

Government, therefore, appeals to all well-meaning Zambians and cooperating partners to dismiss the assertions by the PF party. These assertions are aimed at garnering public sympathy.

The New Dawn Government firmly believes in the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. The government’s actions regarding those who plundered the country’s resources are a reflection of its commitment to upholding these principles and ensuring that no individual, regardless of their position, is above the law.

The clarity given by the Supreme Court, on the interpretation of section 71 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crimes Act, gives us comfort as Government that the law enforcement agencies are acting within the confines of the law.

Law enforcement agencies are encouraged to investigate and prosecute individuals who they may reasonably suspect to be in receipt of, possess, conceal or dispose of any money or other property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of a crime.

The onus is on the affected individuals to prove that their properties are not proceeds of crime. That is the law that we inherited as the New Dawn administration.

In the interest of fostering a healthy democracy, we encourage all political parties to respect the legal processes and refrain from making baseless accusations that only serve to further polarise our society. Let us prioritise the pursuit of truth and justice, above political interests, for the betterment of our nation.

MAN JAILED 15-YEAR FOR TOUCHING FEMALE NEIGHBOUR’S BACKSIDE

A 55-YEAR-OLD man of Chipata has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for touching his female neighbour’s backside while her husband was away.

Mathotho entered into his neighbour’s house around 01:00 hours and started touching the woman while she was sleeping.

Mathotho appeared before Chipata High Court Judge Mercy Makubalo for sentencing for one count of indecent assault, which occurred in July last year.

According to court records, the woman was sleeping in her room around 01:00 hours when she felt someone touching her bottom.

“When I woke up, I saw Mr Mathotho running away from my bedroom and I went to wake up my father,” she said. “I informed him what had transpired and my father went after Mr Mathotho but he never found him.”

Mathotho was later summoned for a meeting at the victim’s house but refused to attend.
The matter was reported to Feni Police Post and Mr Mathotho was apprehended and detained for indecent assault.

During the trial, the woman identified Mathotho as the person who entered her house and touched her bottom.

“I saw the person who touched my buttocks and I can identify him, the light was on in the room. I know Mr Mathotho as his house is next to mine,” she said according to court records.

“I’m married but my husband was not home and Mr Mathotho knew that my husband was out.”

Before the plea could be entered at the start of trial, Mathotho admitted having touched the woman’s bottom while her husband was out.

He told court that he was drunk at the time and mistook her for his wife because his house is next to theirs.

“Truthfully speaking, I was drunk and I did not know what I was doing on that particular night,” Mathotho said.

Justice Makubalo said cases of indecent assault are on the rise in the country and therefore there is need for harsher punishment against offenders.

She then sentenced Mathotho to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of his arrest…

We were just doing it for fun, Abductors tell court as they beg for mercy

THE duo of James Bwalya and Mathews Sikaonga have revealed that they were just having fun when they abducted, raped and assaulted 13 women whom they held hostage for six months last year.

Yesterday, Judge Charles Kafunda held sentencing hearing for the criminal tag-team in camera, and heard how the the ladies were abused by the malevolent lads for a period of six months.

Social welfare officers and parents of the victims represented the girls in their absence and explained that the girls have not fully recovered from trauma as a result of their terrifying experience.

According to sources, Bwalya and his best friend Sikaonga mitigated their case indicating they committed offences of attempted abduction, rape, abduction, abduction of a child, aggravated assault with intent to steal, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and causing grievous harm, out of pleasure.

The hostage takers said they committed the atrocious acts against their victims who among them are former high school classmates, just for pleasure and out of foolishness as they did not know that their amusing operation would turn out to be serious.

Bwalya and Sikaonga told judge Kafunda that they regretted their actions and asked the court to impose a rehabilitative sentence unlike a deterrent sentence as cases of abduction are not common among youths in the early stages of adulthood.

The two begged the Court to give them a second chance in life as they were still youthful.

The two kidnappers took hostage of 13 women in Lusaka between March and October 2022 for purposes of sexual exploitation and assaulted them with intent to steal.

The criminals demanded a ransom from relatives of each of their victims.

Bwalya and Sikaonga who combined their activities with sorcery would make the victims bath water mixed with herbs before raping them so that they could not be located by their families. Others were sprinkled some powder.

The two criminals raped and subjected the girls to corporal abuse to fulfill their narcissistic sociopathic fantasies by forcing them to drink alcohol and do strip dancing.

The two young wizards had a coffin in the criminal den and threatened the captives that they would activate their black art and cause them to run mad if they attempted to escape.

On October 3, 2022 luck was on the girls side when an opportunity to free themselves from captivity presented itself.

Bwalya was always out capturing women while Sikaonga would remain at the den and keep an eye on the captives but on that day the self confessed abductors and rapists went together on an errand and forgot the keys in the key hole to the pantry were they confined the girls.

The victims took advantage by escaping from their hostage takers and made their way to one of the homes adjacent to the criminals’ den where they were sheltered by members of the community and the matter was reported at Godfrey Miyanda police post.

The socerers were arrested on October 4, 2022 by the police who received massive pressure from the public. The duo attempted to flee into Angola but was apprehended in Nkeyema district of Western province.

Judge Kafunda has since set June 29, 2023 as date for judgement.

DEBT RESTRUCTURING FOR ZAMBIA AND THE ORDINARY CITIZENS- Topsy Sikalinda

DEBT RESTRUCTURING FOR ZAMBIA AND THE ORDINARY CITIZENS.

By Topsy Sikalinda

The Zambian Government has been putting forth a lot of effort to deal with our debt problems. In this piece, I shall try and explain the major components of the debt restructuring procedure in order for ordinary citizens to understand.

1. What is reorganizing debt? Restructuring our debt entails altering the conditions of the loans we owe to other nations and organizations. Negotiations are necessary to lengthen the period of time we have to pay back the loan and lessen the financial load on our country.

2. What percentage of the debt is being restructured? Zambia and its bilateral lenders have agreed to restructure its $6.3 billion debt. This indicates that the creditors, notably China and France, have consented to extend the period we have to repay our debts.

3. What does Zambia’s experience mean? By extending the loan maturities, Zambia will have more time than the initial deadline to pay off the debt. We are given breathing room by this extension, which also lessens the immediate strain on our resources.

4. How would it help common people? The economy will grow as a result of the debt restructuring, which will eventually benefit all citizens. It will assist in reducing inflation and stabilizing our currency. For instance, if the currency is stronger, everyone may be able to afford the prices of imported items like petroleum, fertilizer and many other inputs that drive our economy.

5. What does this mean for you and other regular people? This accord, then, is an important step toward restoring our nation’s capacity to sustainably manage its debt. Our ability to manage our debt improves the atmosphere for investment in the private sector. This indicates that companies, both domestic and foreign, will be more inclined to invest in Zambia. Increased investment has the potential to boost the economy, create more jobs, and raise everyone’s standard of living.

6. What about other nations that are struggling with debt? Zambia’s successful debt restructuring serves as a model for other countries, like Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Ethiopia, that are struggling with a similar issue. It demonstrates that debt relief strategies may be developed via tenacious discussions and global collaboration.

7. What comes next? Although this agreement represents a great advancement, it is crucial to remember that it is only the next step. Further talks with eurobond holders and other commercial creditors are required, and Zambia still needs to execute bilateral agreements with each creditor separately. However, this preliminary understanding opens the door for additional development.

8. What makes this a noteworthy accomplishment? The debt restructuring agreement with Zambia is a significant victory for our nation. It not only lessens our financial load but also allows the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to release a $188 million payout. This financial boost would benefit our economy and enable us to make investments in crucial fields like infrastructure, healthcare, social amenities, water and sanitation, education and many more.

This is great news for all citizens. Hope this is helpful.

Zambians Expected A Brave Offer From The Opposition To Provide Ideas Of How To Resolve The Challenges That Were Left By The Past Regime

ZAMBIANS EXPECTED A BRAVE OFFER FROM THE OPPOSITION TO PROVIDE IDEAS OF HOW TO RESOLVE THE CHALLENGES THAT WERE LEFT BY THE PAST REGIME…***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

It is very unfortunate that all opposition political parties that are registered so that one day they form govt and improve the welfare of the people in Zambia have chosen a different poor political course , and yet all these problems in the country affect all of us whether we have these different political affiliations . Leaders of opposition political parties have relatives coming from the origins where these artificial challenges are more affecting because of the past poor leadership styles. May be it is time for the former and other opposition leaders to take a back step and learn how a country is governed and managed from this leadership style under president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA , zambia should not be a country of rhetoric politicians who can’t engage courageously for international purposes to promote ideas that bring solutions of progress and wealth creation , only when you create wealth for the country can you fight poverty (HH) , when the nation is highly indebted the country’s economy is destroyed and the poverty levels increase (HH ) ,which is logical .

When Mr HAKAINDE HICHILEMA won the past election ,it was like everyone in the opposition came together and agreed to see president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA and the new dawn govt fail to lift this country from its kneeling position , just like they did to ensure president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA was disadvantaged to win the past election , the country must come first to all of us , because whoever is seeking to lead this country must understand that the country and the people of zambia comes first , success by president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is a benefit for everyone in the country , the future of the country require strategies that mitigate the unforseen circumstances , that is why a country needs leadership and management order at all times . Hate and retributive trends should not continue to take a center stage in our political dispensation , one being a president should not be treated like an enemy , it will be difficult for zambians to see any leadership from elsewhere when we have a better president in office of the presidency who is CRITICISED for doing what is right and beneficial for the country and the people . Character must change we are zambians not by mistake through identity and unity .

We have seen a lot In terms of political disorganization from the opposition , we should have loved to see a more energetic opposition with a vibrant logic on how this country should have been brought out from the mess that seemed impossible to resolve , we seem to have taken an edge of progress because of the focus and robust program efforts which president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has had to undertake , we have seen these positive projections and attainment , the country has deservedly sought for it’s direction under very difficult circumstances , some people have said the trips have been too expensive , I agree but that is the cost price we have to pay as a country in order to achieve these intended goals , it is better than never , we urge youth leaders and other organisations to emulate the charismatic leadership approach and other exploits by the UPND leadership under president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA , we should give credit where it is due , if we fail as a country to acknowledge these prospects , it is possible for God to blind us and get back to the same type of leadership that brought us down for another learning experience , God forbid our minds are alert and the eyes are open since 2021 . God bless mother Zambia .

Senegal’s Sonko files lawsuit in France against president Sall for ‘crimes against humanity’

0

A 170-page long complaint has been lodged against Senegalese president Macky Sall.

His main opponant Ousmane Sonko has filed a criminal complaint in France for “crimes against humanity” allegedly committed between March 2021 and June 2023.

Sonko’s lawyer broke down the accusations during a presser on Thursday (June 22).

Juan Branco, Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko’s lawyer :

“For the past month we have been conducting a lengthy investigation with the participation of hundreds of Senegalese, whom I would like to thank, French lawyer Juan Branco said.

“[They were] citizens, civil servants, people working in all of the country’s administrations who have provided us with evidence, documents, contracts, videos, testimonies, that have enabled us to establish the existence of 60 crimes of murder considered to be crimes against humanity.”

During the press conference French-Spaniard lawyer Juan Branco projected videos and photos, some of them containing distressing footage, allegedly showing Senegalese demonstrators getting killed or seriously injured during the deadly unrest earlier in June.

While the government toll for June is 16 dead, Amnesty International has counted 23 fatalities and the opposition tally stands at 30.

Sonko alleges that deadly clashes following his sentencing to jail time this month are the latest step in “a generalised and systematic attack on the civilian population” of Senegal since March 2021.

He was convicted to two years in prison for “corrupting the youth”. A beauty salon worker accused him of death threats and rape.

The deadly protest following the court’s verdict are the worst Senegal has seen in years, following a previous outburst two years ago when at least 12 died.

2024 presidential election
In addition to the president, opposition leader Sonko’s case targets Senegal’s Interior Minister Antoine Diome, military police chief Moussa Fall and 112 others.

His criminal complaint has been filed with the Paris tribunal’s crimes against humanity unit.

Sall and Diome have “ordered and supervised the commission” of crimes “against unarmed demonstrators since March 2021”, including “murders, torture and forced disappearances”, it alleges.

Sonko also requested a probe by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He uses a provision that allows any person or group to ask for an investigation to be opened.

The tension is high in Senegal who is gearing towards a presidential election in 2024.

Sharp-tongued and charismatic, Sonko has drawn a strong following among Senegal’s youth who love his barbs against the political elite he refers to as the “state mafia”.

He announced he would contest in next year’s polls however his conviction could prevent him from running.

President Macky Sall — who rode to power in 2012 on a wave of anger over his predecessor Abdoulaye Wade’s efforts to seek a third term in office — has refused to rule out a similar move.

Demonstrators opposed to Sall were pushed back Thursday (June 22) by police officers on the outskirts of Paris, where the Senegalese President is attending an international summit.

Macky Sall called the legal complaint “ridiculous”.

Tax inspector turned politican
Sonko founded his PASTEF-Les Patriotes party in 2014.

However, he gained prominence two years later when he was fired from his tax inspector job for publicly slamming murky public sector contracts and calling out the political elite.

Sonko took his next step up the political ladder in 2017, when he was elected MP, followed in 2019 by an impressive tilt at the presidential elections.

Running on an anti-establishment ticket against veteran rivals, he came in third with 15 percent of the vote, an unexpectedly strong result for such a newcomer.

Sonko’s approach “is the antithesis of our democratic culture and traditions,” said Yoro Dia, one of the president’s advisors.

Divisive personality
Sonko is stoking the prospect of violence to escape justice, Dia said.

He described Sonko as “the Trojan Horse of the Salafists,” whose puritan, ultra-orthodox form of Islam contrasts with Senegal’s more tolerant Sufi mysticism.

Sonko was born in the restive southern region of Casamance.

Amadou Badji, a 75-year-old pensioner in the region’s main town, Ziguinchor, said Sall had been targeting Sonko for the past five years “simply because he raises hope.”

But 33-year-old coffee seller Algassim Diallo said that “the country has been taken hostage for the past two years by a tale about rapes… It’s time to move on.”

Africa’s first Black millionaire Patrice Motsepe reportedly gains $200 million in 19 days

After suffering losses early this year, South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe’s net worth has risen by $200 million in the last 19 days, from $2.3 billion to $2.5 billion, according to Forbes’ data tracked by Billionaires Africa.

This is due to an increase in the market value of his private investments, including his stakes in TymeBank, a digital-only bank, the outlet reported. Between May 12 and June 2, Motsepe saw his net worth decline by $100 million, which brought his total wealth loss to $900 million. Thanks to his gain of $200 million, his total wealth loss is now $700 million, meaning he has experienced a decline of over half a billion dollars in wealth this year.

Motsepe, who is South Africa‘s first Black industrialist and billionaire, is the founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, which mines iron ore, manganese ore and alloys, platinum group metals, copper, nickel and coal. He became a billionaire in 2008 and the first black African on the Forbes list. In 1994, the South African became the first Black partner at law firm Bowman Gilfillan in Johannesburg before starting a mining services contracting business. In 2016, he launched a private equity firm, African Rainbow Capital, to focus on investing in Africa. Motsepe, who is the president and owner of the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, was elected president of the Confederation of African Football in 2021.

The South African billionaire is the first African to sign Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge, promising to give at least half his fortune to charity. Apart from being an international businessman, Motsepe is an expert in governance, law and compliance but his first passion was entrepreneurship.

“Growing up in a business environment in a family, standing behind conflicts at a young age, and I wanted to pursue my first passion which was entrepreneurship,” he said in an interview with CNN. The African billionaire has a BA law degree (University of Swaziland), LLB (Wits University), Doctor of Commerce (honoris causa) (Wits University), Doctor of Commerce (honoris causa) (Stellenbosch University), Doctor of Management and Commerce (honoris causa) (Fort Hare) and Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) (University of Eswatini, formerly University of Swaziland).

Zambia has clinched a deal to restructure more than $6 billion in debts owed to other govts

0

PARIS, June 22 (Reuters) – Zambia has clinched a deal to restructure more than $6 billion in debts owed to other governments, a French official said on Thursday in a long-awaited breakthrough to ease pressure on the southern African country’s strained public finances.

Zambia in 2020 became the first African country to default on its sovereign debt during the pandemic and has struggled since in protracted negotiations to agree a deal on the $12.8 billion of external debt it was trying to restructure.

“We have reached an agreement on the outline of a debt treatment, we’ve reached the end of the negotiation,” the French official, who did not wish to be identified, told journalists.

Zambia’s public sector creditors agreed to reschedule $6.3 billion, including $1.3 billion in arrears, and private sector creditors are expected to do the same on the $6.8 billion owed to them, the official said.

“We’ve already spoken to representatives of the private sector and they know what to expect, that they will have to restructure and make a comparable effort,” the official added.

The agreement calls for Zambia’s debt to be rescheduled over more than 20 years with a three-year grace period during which only payments on interest are due.

The restructuring agreement with official creditors paves the way for Zambia to receive another $188 million tranche of money from the International Monetary Fund, part of a $1.3 billion package approved in August 2022.

The scale of the debt relief Zambia requires has been a concern for some of the country’s main creditors.

Some Western officials have accused China – Zambia’s largest bilateral creditor – of dragging its feet in restructuring talks, something Beijing denies.

Of the $6.3 billion in debt owed to government bodies, $4.1 billion was owed specifically to Export-Import Bank of China, the French official said.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was one of about 40 leaders attending a summit in France on Thursday and Friday aimed at easing the debt burden on some of the world’s most vulnerable countries while freeing up billions of dollars in new funds for climate finance.

Beijing was keen not to be seen further holding up debt relief for Zambia at the summit, the official said, adding that French President Emmanuel Macron’s talks with Chinese authorities in Beijing in April also helped unblock the situation.

Zambia is viewed as a test case for a debt restructuring framework backed by the Group of 20 wealthy nations intended to streamline relief for countries caught in a developing world debt crisis sparked in part by the pandemic.

However, the process has been achingly slow for Zambia, a fact that has discouraged all but a handful of other struggling governments from seeking help under the mechanism.-

SHOW US THE WITHDRAWAL SLIP FOR THE K 65 MILLION – KASAUTA DEMANDS

JUNE 22, 2023

LUSAKA – THE forfeited K65 million from female journalist, Faith Musonda has taken a different twist, with Parliament demanding the source of money.

During the question and answer session after a ministerial statement by acting Minister of Finance and National Planning Charles Milupi was delivered, Bweengwa Member of Parliament Kasauta Michelo said the question behind the K65 million should not be based on deposits made after the forfeiture, but should be based on the source of the money.

Mr Michelo said the deposit slip issue was meant to derail the matter from the true issue which is the name of the “boyfriend” who gave Ms Musonda the money.

“Minister, I just want to find out from you, when that money was discovered in Faith Musonda’s house, a certain politician rushed to the house and that politician went to negotiate ,that please we do not want to be tried in the courts of law.

Are we in the position to tell us the name of the boyfriend who provided the money to Faith?” he asked.

In his response, Acting Minister of Finance Charles Milupi said perpetrators behind issue surrounding the K65 million want to continue scratching a wound they created and so the matter will be investigated to the latter.

“They say Madam speaker, if one has a wound and you want that wound to heal, you stop scratching it. This matter was going off quietly, but certain people want to keep bringing it up, as a result the deposit slips have been explained, but there is also need to go into the source. Where did the money come from,” he said.

He disclosed that investigative offices have been asked to look into the matter to ascertain even which banks provided the bundles of money found because when it was recovered, the bundles indicated which banks it came from.

“And as a result of that, all the banks that had money coming from them as part of this amount will be called to account and state where it came from,” he said.

WHY IS ECL LIVING IN A RENTED HOUSE WHEN HIS FAMILY HAS BUILT SANCTUARIES ? …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

No one hates ECL and his family , some people warn us from talking about ECL, but why shouldn’t we when he is former president in zambia , especially that now the family is looking like it is wealthier than the country , he comes into public view , they tell us all the reasons they think are necessary to , , this must be made very clear ,even the fight and struggle to remove him from power was done in the common need to save the country , when I reminded the people of zambia that if ECL was planning to come back in politics , it was not meant to sarve the people of zambia , but to protect this hidden wealth , secure friends and relatives , ensure the country was under extreme surveillance under authoritarian schemes . Who is ECL ? , a new book must be rewritten to confirm his real personality and character on earth .

We have seen the former president of south Africa being charged for various corruption cases , but why do we think in Zambia that one who is a minister or former and respected persons can’t be prosecuted for similar crimes , in fact these correctional facilities are supposed to be more filled with such people than chicken thieves or animal wrastlers . It is time that now in Zambia we know why after 59 years of independence , the poverty levels are extremely high , the gap between the rich and the poor is widening , the country has been dumped with a serious debt crisis . Wealth of a country has been surpped by very few individuals because of our poor judgement in choosing leaders that we trust with the responsibility of this country , sympathy has definitely consumed us .

Was this move before govt could decide to allocate a house for him deciept to the zambian people , when ECL and his family quickly shifted to the current rented house ? , we should recall that ECL once said ,” HE DID NOT SEE ANY REASON WHY GOVT WAS OBLIGATED TO BUILD FORMER PRESIDENTS HOUSES WHEN THEY WERE CABLE OF BUILDING THEIR OWN ” . It is of great concern that ECL left state house to go and rent a house of his choice , when his wife and children had buit houses worth.millions of US dollars money from unknown sources , these properties that are being handed over and siezed from ECL’s family without him having any property in this country calls for the nations attention to remind ourselves who former president ECL was for this country .

This issue brings a lot of doubts in the minds of many zambians whether the house ECL is renting is for the said landlord , if truly ECL chose to rent than going to stay in one of the properties for his children or wife or even friends that were managing their family properties , may be the truth is on its way for the nation to know what is going on and what surrounds the most complicated former president zambia has ever had . It is still compelling to know how former ministers appointed by ECL walked away from govt with so much wealth , how did then him leave govt to go and rent from a football players mansion when his family has such wealth which is seen associated to proceeds of crimes ? .

There has been a lot of soliderity pilgrimages for ECL and his family by his followers , they must be alarmed to see these properties owned by his wife and children , the state has not removed his immunity and it may be premature to suggest ECL made himself richer than zambia . The followers of this family must understand that this wealth generation by ECL’s family has been revealed to PF members , that following blindly is a sin , this wealth belongs to all zambians but power centered it for the family to create an empire . When we saw former ministers with such properties one now should know that birds of the same feathers flock together .

Who is going to continue vindicating president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA for being president of this country ?. Is this persecution to see the law enforcement wings retrieving wealth of the country from a single family of ECL ?, how many schools are we able to build from the 1/4 quarter of wealth just from ECL’s family before his properties are revealed ? , this is sad for the country and we should take these lessons very serious , the first step was to save the country in 2021 , by ushering a leader with a patriotic attitude to consider the securing of our nations future generations , one of the most examples is free education which is an opportunity for every able child to be in school in Zambia. Who is going to take away anything from the new dawn govt ?. God bless mother Zambia .

HH CLARIFIES UKRAINE – RUSSIA PEACE INITIATIVE

The President writes ……

My reflections on our tour of Ukraine and Russia

I am aware that many have been questioning the value of my participation in the African Peace Initiative mission to Ukraine and Russia. Often, things are not reported correctly, so I wanted to take the chance to clarify my purpose and goals- and why this is important for Zambia.

My primary aim was to listen, learn and try to understand a war that not only threatens the lives and livelihoods of people in Ukraine and Russia but undermines stability across the world. I personally experienced the terror of sheltering in a bunker while missiles attacked Kyiv. We witnessed a church that had been razed to the ground along with the people who sought shelter within its walls. We heard the arguments from both sides and got to appreciate the seemingly irreconcilable differences and divergent narratives that are driving this war. We understood how hollow mediation or compromise sounds, when people are fighting for their Ives, their rights, and their values.

We are not expecting a solution to this war to emerge from Africa, but Africa needs to be part of the solution. This trip was important to ensure that African voices are not only heard but also that we must have a say in global issues. We need to be part of the discussion and have our views reflected. To do so, we need to stand together. I acknowledge that there are important differences between us, and that we don’t yet speak with one voice. We do, however share a common goal of ensuring that the principles of sovereignty and human rights set out in the UN Charter are upheld on the continent and across the world. We spoke out to both sides on the need to protect these principles in the interests of humanity.

I see this mission as a start on the path to a stronger and more effective African voice that will be good for the continent and the world. We bring strong values of peace and humanity, and we need to demonstrate these values at home as well as abroad. I am committed to this path, and to ensuring that African voices are heard and are a force for good.

GOODFELLOW FINANCE GIFTS LAWRENCE MULENGA K15,000 FOR MAN OF THE MATCH PERFORMANCE…as Chief Twaileta offers 1 Acre Beach Plot for Mulenga and Banda

Chipolopolo shot stopper Lawrence Mulenga has been awarded a K15,000 as the winner of the Goodfellow Finance Limited Fans’ Man of the Match award during Zambia’s 3-0 trouncing of the elephants of Ivory Coast on Saturday to book their AFCON ticket.

Mulenga’s shot stopping antics enthused fans after being handed a surprise starting berth by Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The Power Dynamos diver previously was between the sticks in Zambia’s 1-0 loss to Mali in an international friendly in September 2022.

Goodfellow Chief Executive Officer Ivor Muluba said the financial services firm wanted to motivate Mulenga and the team for their stellar performance.

FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga urged other corporate bodies to come on board and support the the various national teams.

Kamanga lamented tht despite the Copper Queens’ monumental qualification to the 2023 FIFA World Cup which commences next month, the corporate world had remained aloof to the team’s achievement.

The FAZ CEO revealed that FAZ already had a draft program for the Chipolopolo ahead of the AFCON that will be staged in Ivory Coast in January next year.

Meanwhile Chief Twaileta has given Mulenga and Emmanuel Banda who flanked his teammate a one acre beach plot each in Chiengi for their heroics on Saturday to help Zambia qualify to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Goals from Patson Daka, Kings Kangwa and a Serge Aurier goal gave Zambia a deserved win that qualified the team to the Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare.

Chamisa excited by Kasukuwere “dividing” Zanu-PF ahead of elections

Main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has said he is excited by the entrance of former cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere into the 2023 presidential race, saying this would divide Zanu-PF and give the opposition a chance to lead Zimbabwe.

Chamisa filed his nomination papers at the High Court on Wednesday together with other presidential candidates including his biggest rival President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Kasukuwere sent his lawyer and chief election adviser Jacqueline Sande to file on his behalf.

Asked by a journalist to comment on the impact of the entrance of Kasukuwere in the presidential race, Chamisa said he was excited that this time he would face a divided Zanu-PF.

“This time we’re facing a factionalised, split and divided Zanu-PF. Now, a divided opponent is a weak opponent and we’re excited. We’re even more united ourselves,” he said.

Candidates paid US$20 000 to contest in the presidential elections, aspiring legislators paid US$1 000 and US$200 for candidates for local authority elections.

Against this background, Chamisa slammed the exorbitant nomination fees charged by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for aspiring candidates.

“It’s a scandal that ZEC would get almost half a million. Almost US$600 000 from candidates. Candidates are offering themselves to serve lead. But then you can’t ask them to pay for providing public service.

“It doesn’t make sense. It’s a scandal. It’s illegal. It’s un-African. These are all tactics to ensure that they stop us. But guess what, grace is abundant, the race is ours. No matter what they are trying to do, God is in it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kasukuwere’s lawyer assured the nation that her client would physically campaign to dislodge Mnangagwa ahead of the plebiscite.

“Saviour Kasukuwere is expected to roll out his campaign plan himself but it should start soon,” Sande said.

“The nomination itself has been accepted as of now. His whereabouts, I cannot divulge but he is going to be available to campaign for himself because as you know as a presidential candidate you need to hit the ground running and to meet the electorate and sell them your ideology, proposals and get them to vote for you so he is not going to campaign outside the country he is going to be around.”

Kasukuwere served as a cabinet Minister and Zanu-PF political commissar before he fled Zimbabwe during a military coup that ousted the late former president Robert Mugabe in November 2017.

Analysts believe that if Kasukuwere manages to contest, as a former top Zanu-PF official, he will garner a significant number of votes enough to divide Zanu-PF and pave the way for the CCC, the main opposition party.

Acting Finance Minister Struggles To Clearly Explain How K65 Million Was Introduced Into The Banking System- Mundubile

ACTING FINANCE MINISTER STRUGGLES TO CLEARLY EXPLAIN HOW K65 MILLION WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE BANKING SYSTEM.

………as Leader of Opposition bemoans inconsistencies in the Ministerial statement.

LUSAKA………Thursday, 22 June 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Acting Minister of Finance and National Planning Eng. Charles Milupi was at pains trying to explain when the K65 million forfeited by Faith Musonda was introduced into the banking system.

HON Milupi who produced some slips on the floor of the House said it was irrelevant to demand for deposit slips if the money was transfered electronically.

“After the boxes in which the money was loaded were delivered to the Bank of Zambia, the keys were kept by the police and at a later date, the police went back to have the Money counted and authenticated.

On the 5th of November, 2021, the money was deposited at the Bank of Zambia suspense account, that is when this money was introduced into the Bank of Zambia. That is when it was necessary when the ACC, asked for the money to be transferred into their forfeiture account at ZANACO bank rather than getting the same cash, they used electronic transfer. That is how the forfeiture account was credited with K65 million.”

And Leader of Opposition Hon Brian Mundubile has bemoaned the inconsistencies in the manner the Minister delivered the statement surrounding the K65 Million.

Hon Mundubile said what was expected was not a lengthy and protracted explanation which was meant to confuse people.

He said what was needed was to show how the money changed form from its physical state to being electronic.

He said Hon Milupi failed lamentably to show how the money was introduced.

Hon Mundubile said it is very disappointing to hear the Minister render a statement full of inconsistencies.

“All we wanted to know was at what point the money was introduced into the banking system. To change form from physical to electronic, it needed to be deposited, that is the point we wanted. Instead he came up with a concocted story that the money had gone to the Bank of Zambia, then suddenly it was dissolved in electronic form,,” he said.

Hon Mundubile who is also Mporokoso Lawmaker further explained the inconsistencies noted in the delivery of the Ministers speech.

“As the money was sitting at the Bank of Zambia, that was the money for ACC, that is the entity that was supposed to deposit. To show the inconsistency, the money both in dollar and kwacha was confiscated at the same time. Why is it that in his report, he seems to be suggesting that the $57,000 was delivered to ACC in cash, while the other money was transferred. The money that was purported to have been delivered in cash, is the money for which the deposit slip we actually saw. We saw a deposit slip for ZANACO, why wasn’t the dollar treated the same way the K65 million was treated,” he said.

Hon Mundubile has also described as disturbing the move taken by the speaker to answer a question on behalf of the Executive.

“What was disturbing was the speaker start answering questions on behalf of the executive. The minister had proper custody of the documents. MPS are demanding that the documents need to be authenticated. To admit them into evidence we would have wanted the managers to have been subpoenaed into the house. We are told that they were, God knows when and where,” he said.

“I killed my wife for confessing that my children were not mine – PwC Boss Tonderai Luwisi

I killed my wife for confessing that my children were not mine -Tonderai

AN auditor and director at Price Waterhouse Coopers Tonderai Luwisi has told the Lusaka High Court that he stabbed his wife to death during a brutal fight after she told him that he did not father their two children.

Luwisi said he felt betrayed and heartbroken to hear that the children he had broken his back for to ensure they never lacked in their 18-years of existence were not his.

The 45-year-old who is a Zimbabwean national is accused of murdering his wife Pellegia Muligwi aged 38 on December 10, 2022 around 18:00 hours in a bitter fight after she learned of his infidelity.

Opening his defense before High Court judge Bonaventure Mbewe Luwisi narrated that prior to his wife’s death, the deceased informed him that she would be travelling to Zimbabwe for work and she requested that he changes ownership of his Toyota vanguard in her name which she would use to travel.

He said they exchanged their cars and obtained the requisite documentation needed for the car to be allowed on Zimbabwean soil.

Luwisi said the pair had been on separation since October 6, 2022 due to repetitive marital conflicts which forced her to leave their matrimonial home in Foxdale and rent an apartment in Jesmondine with their children.

He said though they were on separation both parties would fulfil their marital duties and maintained their marital status as husband and wife.

“I used to eat dinner in Jesmondine, I used to take my wife to dinner every Friday. I used to sleep at her house at some weekends and my wife would also come at our Foxdale flat on Saturday’s and we would spend the mornings together,” Luwisi said whilst recounting the last moments he spent with his wife.

He said on the fateful day, Muligwi informed him that their tenant in Zimbabwe who is the son of President Emerson Munangagwa requested that they install some fittings at their property.

“Based on the message, I decided to drive to her place and she asked me to buy some food but I thought to buy drinks, so I decided to send our son since there was a mini supermarket where we used to buy groceries,”Luwisi said.

He said after sometime he noticed that his wife was grumpy and he assumed that the reason she was moody was that he did not subscribe for DSTV because she was traveling.

“I went to the kitchen wanting to chat with my wife,I found her by the fridge packing meat in plastic bags. She was angry, aggressive and confrontational and asked me to leave. Earlier,I had received a message from a strange number which was asking the father of the child to bring milk. I clarified that issue with my wife and I thought it was closed,”Luwisi said.

“My wife went to the other side of the kitchen and started insulting me. My wife told me I was not husband material, that I was rubbish and our marriage was over. She then told me she was not worth US$5,200 which was a final lobola I had paid to my in-laws in June 2022 to honour my wife. She said she was worth more and could easily refund me the lobola.”

Luwisi claimed that his wife belittled him when she told him he was not man enough, their marriage was not exciting and that she was in love with someone else who was better than him and regretted wasting 18 years in marriage with him.

“My wife told me that the two children are not mine, I wasn’t their father, I can’t give birth to such beautiful children, I was nothing, I was useless and she is taking the children away from me. I was shocked and confused with what my wife was telling me. I never expected such from her. The deception, the betrayal and the insensitiveness,” Luwisi said amid sobs.

“At that moment,my wife took away the pride in me as a father, husband and family man. I felt deceived, betrayed and belittled by my wife of almost 18 years. I was very angry,I was furious,I was heartbroken. Then I asked my wife, why now? Who is the father of the children and where is he? We had a scuffle as my wife pushed me and then she picked a knife from kitchen counter and told me a son of a bitch shall be killed.”

He claimed that he lost his cool and the pair was at cross swords to which Muligwi stabbed him in the neck, chest and thigh and he stabbed her back but he does not know which part of the body they knife pierced.

“I blacked out and the next thing I remember was seeing my wife on the floor and my daughter holding the knife. I retrieved the knife she had, seeing my wife on the floor I panicked I was in fear I was in shock and tears,” Luwisi claimed.

“I was bleeding from the neck and from my chest, I was in panic, fear and traumatized with what had just happened. I called my son but he was still at the shops. The thought of me and my wife dying made me write a message to my children telling them about the things I had left them and that my son should take care of his sister upon my death.”

He said he drove to PWC offices to get help for himself and his wife because people would easily identify him there.

“I blacked out and the next thing I remember is getting out of the car walked out of the basement I didn’t know where I was and going I was just walking I wasn’t myself anymore. I collapsed in the middle of the road and woke up at UTH surrounded by medical personnel,”said Luwisi.

During cross examination by State prosecutor Victor Chongo, the accused rebutted his daughter’s testimony that she found him strangling his wife in the kitchen and later stabbed her in the neck.

Asked why he did not walk away when he was angered Luwisi said although such an opportunity presented itself he didn’t see it prudent to walk away when the argument got heated, because he couldn’t control himself.

“I didn’t bother to inquire if the children were really mine because I believed my wife,” said Luwisi.

Judge Mbewe adjourned the matter to August 23, 2023 for judgement.

Haaland, Bellingham, Vinicius, Mbappe: Who Will Win The 2024 Ballon D’or?

HAALAND, BELLINGHAM, VINICIUS, MBAPPE: WHO WILL WIN THE 2024 BALLON D’OR?

A changing of the guard is about to take place at the summit of men’s football.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have held a stranglehold on the coveted Ballon d’Or trophy for the vast majority of the past 15 years, are set to play in Saudi Arabia and the USA respectively next season.

Karim Benzema, winner of the world’s best player award in 2022, has followed in Ronaldo’s footsteps by moving to Saudi Arabia, while the only other winner in that period – 37-year-old Luka Modric – is reaching the end of his illustrious career despite reportedly agreeing to stay at Real Madrid next season.

Messi is widely expected to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or after guiding Argentina to a first World Cup crown since 1986 last winter, but who will pick up the mantle in 2024? BBC Sport takes a look…

One of the top performers at last year’s World Cup in Qatar, Bellingham became the third-most expensive teenager in history – and the second-most expensive English player of all time – when he joined Real Madrid for an initial 103m euros (£88.5).

He was unable to guide the Bundesliga club to a first league title in 11 years but excelled in his final season in Germany, making history in October last year when he was made the club’s youngest captain at just 19 years of age.

The first player to win the Premier League player and young player of the year awards in the same season, the prolific Norwegian is perhaps the most obvious heir apparent to Ronaldo, Messi and co.

Haaland sent records tumbling in his debut campaign in England’s top flight, his 36-goal tally breaking the previous best mark shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole (34) for nearly three decades.

In the aftermath of Madrid’s demolition of Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League back in March, head coach Carlo Ancelotti called Vinicius the “most decisive player anywhere in the world – the one who determines matches most on a consistent basis”.

The Brazilian, who terrorised the Manchester City defence with his pace and trickery in the 2021-22 semi-finals before scoring the winner in the final against Liverpool, had 23 goals and 21 assists in all competitions in 22-23 – the third most across Europe’s top-flight leagues behind Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

The prolific Frenchman has scored 212 goals and contributed 98 assists in 260 games since joining Paris St-Germain from Monaco in 2017, contributing to 13 domestic trophies with the Qatari-owned club.

An integral part of France’s World Cup triumph in 2018, Mbappe has also registered 38 goals in 88 appearances for Les Blues, placing him fifth in their all-time scorer’s list – and a mere 15 goals behind current record holder Olivier Giroud. [BBC]

STOP SPREADING HATE!!!
Fellow Zambians, for once, let’s learn to
love each other genuinely. The usual “pull him/her down” syndrome has never helped this nation to progress. Instead, it has derailed us from developing in many spheres.

Music is a talent distributed to various individuals by God the creator. The same God who blessed K’millian music with the talent of music is the same God who has granted talent and fame to the Yo Maps you are listening to today. The God who created Dannykayamusic and Jordan Katembula JK also created Chile One MrZambia and Ephraim Son of Africa. Sadly, we as a people have fallen into the trap of toxic comparison and gone on a trajectory of choosing to injur one act as a way of supporting another. We are even proud to be making or breaking one artist at a time yet we have the option of supporting a variety of artists at once— because the cake is big enough for everyone.

Truth be told, Mordecaii zm will
Never be Yo Maps Yo and Yo Maps will never be Mordecai, never. We all sound different yet we are perfectly integrated to complement each other to create a perfect recipe for the Zambian music consumers.

By now, we could have been enjoying some interesting collaborations such as Chile One featuring Yo Maps or Yo Maps featuring Chile One. Alas, the so-called ‘Disciplinary Committee’ makes it almost impossible at the moment. Even if the two artists may be willing to work together, deep down they may shun the idea for fear of being called out by fellow Zambians who are likely to say “A is better than B” or “X was killed on that song by Y”.

Stop teaching young Mordecai resentment for other artists and unhealthy competition. Instead, encourage him to learn one or two things from the same Yo Maps you are busy rating him against. Stop using new artists to fight your personal battles against someone. You clearly tried to use Chile One to injur Yo Maps and now you are trying to use Mordecai for the same agenda. The two artists are gifted differently and should be supported according to their hard work. In fact, both of them can represent Zambia internationally. The more, the merrier. By the way, track #9 on my new album is called “Chingastry” which talks about people who like to kill other people’s dreams for no apparent reason. Don’t turn the music industry into a music chingastry and stop spreading hatred among artists

Bob Marley died in 1981 but earns $23m a year after a 3-decade legal battle over his estate

0

Reggae icon Robert Nesta Bob Marley did not die a poor man, and his family escaped poverty, thanks to the wealth he left behind from his years of musical mastery, which shot him to global acclaim as one of the best musicians of all time.

Born on February 6, 1945, Bob Marley lived a humble life as he promoted freedom for poor and oppressed people, social equality, and justice. However, decades of lawsuits over his estate—which was reported to be worth about $30 million when he died—followed his death from cancer on May 11, 1981.

Chaos in the Absence of a Will
Bob Marley did not leave behind a will as per his Rastafari beliefs that characterize lawyers and legal documents as evil and tools of Babylon. Instead, his family could only depend on the Jamaican intestate law to decide on the distribution of his wealth.

His wife, Rita Marley, would have received 10% of his assets and would be entitled to another 45% throughout her life, while his at least eleven children by seven different women would share the balance. This didn’t seem fair to some and didn’t go down well.

Marley’s business attorney, David Steinberg, and an accountant, Marvin Zolt, convinced Rita to forge his name to a series of documents and predate them before he died. The plan was to transfer control of most of Marley’s corporate holdings, along with much of his royalty rights and money, to her.

The Legal Battles Begin
One of Marley’s former managers uncovered the scheme. It began a long series of legal battles, which ended after the two accomplices were found guilty of fraud and other illegalities to the tune of $6 million.

Rita Marley also confessed and stated that she acted upon the attorney’s advice. As a result, she lost her administrative control of Bob Marley’s estate, which she had since his death until 1986.

At the same time, other legal claims popped up from several children of Marley and their mothers; one from the Wailers, Marley’s eight bandmates at the time of his death; and another from Cayman Music, which claims to own some of Marley’s recordings.

Marley’s mother also moved to his $300,000 South Dade house in Miami in 1977, and Chris Blackwell, president of Island Records, Marley’s record label, wanted to include the property in an $8.2-million sale of Marley’s estate.

Blackwell would get royalty rights from Marley’s recordings, copyrights for his songs after 1976, and real estate, including South Dade house, if the deal sailed through. He expressed willingness to negotiate the sale of the home, but Bob Marley’s mother contested the deal. The legal battle ended after a decade, with both parties benefitting.

Marley brothers

In another legal battle that ended in the early 90s, the Jamaican Supreme Court ruled that Rita Marley and Marley’s children had the exclusive right to use Marley’s name, likeness, and image for commercial purposes.

This ruling prompted another lawsuit in 2011 when Rita Marley and nine of Bob’s children sued his half-brother, Richard Booker, and two of his corporations. Booker used Marley’s name and image to market the annual 9 Mile Music Festival in Miami, and he owned a company that gives tours of the village where Marley was born and buried.

He also trademarked the term “Mama Marley” for his line of fish products. Booker claimed that Bob Marley had permitted him to use the family name. After a year in court, the family reached a settlement agreement.

The Industrious Marley Family
As of 2018, Bob Marley is the fifth top-earning dead celebrity, according to Forbes. His estate, now named House of Marley, is managed by four of his children, Rohan Marley, the brand officer of the estate; Cedella; Stephen; and Ziggy, while the rest sit on a board and share the proceeds evenly.

According to Forbes, the proceeds derived from the sale of products in more than 48 countries, which included headphones, Marley Natural cannabis, smoking accessories, Get Together portable speakers (which logged $6 million in sales in 2016) and Smile Jamaica earphones ($8.1 million).

There are also Uplift earphones, Marley Coffee (managed by Rohan), and Marley Natural (managed by Cedella), which sells herb-related products such as smoked-glass water pipes. The Marley family has hired a team to help run House Marley and to deal with the unauthorized use of Bob’s name and likeness. Forbes estimates that unauthorized sales of Marley music and merchandise generate more than half a billion dollars annually, though the estate disputes this.-Face2Face Africa

Lusaka woman attempts to uproot cheating hubby’s manhood

Lusaka woman attempts to uproot cheating hubby’s manhood

A WELDER of Lusaka’s John Leingh Compound has narrated to the Boma Local Court how his wife almost uprooted his manhood on suspicion that he was using it to solder other women.

Testifying in case where he had been sued for divorce, Chanda Tembo aged 38 recounted how he was awakened by excruciating pain in his groin area one night, only to find his wife’s hands firmly gripped on his biological welding rod and pulling it as if she were taking part in a must-win Olympics tug-of-war contest.

He said the pain was unbearable and his wife did not stop pulling despite him begging her to stop.

Fortunately for Tembo, pulled as she might that night, his 27 year old wife Beatrice Kandela did not manage to separate his prized baby-making organ from the rest of his cheating body.

However from the pulling ordeal, Tembo said he became powerless and spent over week home nursing then pain.

Tembo told court that Beatrice forced herself on him in order to chew his money saying he only married her in 2014 when she refused to go home after a sleepover.

However, when he fell on hard times after losing his job, Beatrice became disrespectful and accused him of cheating whenever he returned home late from helping his taxi driver brother.

For her part, Beatrice admitted to pulling Tembo’s manhood saying he was a shameless adulterer who had several girlfriends some of whom he even brought to the matrimonial bed.

The mother of two said she felt like like pulling the manhood of her husband was the befitting punishment for his infidelity.

In the meantime, Beatrice laughed off Tembo’s claims that she only wanted to chew his money saying she had never received anything more than K30 from him to feed the couple’s two children.

She said Tembo had even chased her from home when she became pregnant in 2021 and the couple has been on separation since.

In ruling on the matter, Senior local court Magistrate Mpundu Mwape Fwambo, Magistrate Peggy Nyambe granted the couple divorce on basis that there too many issues of extramarital affairs and unreasonable behaviour from both parties.

“This marriage ended a long time ago in 2021 what we are giving you is just a legal confirmation that it is over. Custody of the children has however been granted to the mother and they shall be maintained with K800 monthly effective June 30, 2023. Subject to review yearly,” said Magistrate Nyambe.

Esther Lungu to lose 15 flats worth over K41.5 million

Esther Lungu to lose 15 flats worth over K41.5 million

FORMER first lady Esther Lungu is on the verge of losing her 15 double storey flats to the State on suspicion that they are proceeds of crime.

The State has since instituted proceedings before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to have tainted properties belonging to family members of former president Edgar Lungu, forfeited to the State.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gilbert Phiri has filed four originating notices of motion for an application of a non conviction-based forfeiture order of tainted property pursuant to Order 30 Rules 15 and 17 of the High Court Rules, read together with Sections 29 and 31 of the forfeiture of proceeds of crime Act no. 19 of 2010.

This implies that Esther will give up on their properties, without being subjected to trial.

According to an affidavit sworn on behalf of Phiri by Emmanuel Khondowe, a senior investigations officer at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) under the anti-money laundering investigations unit, the DEC in May 2022 received information from a reliable source that politically exposed persons had illegally obtained property across Lusaka.

Information from the DEC information indicate that there was real property that was reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime at various plot numbers in Lusaka’s State Lodge area and belonged to Esther and her associates, which were acquired between 2013 and 2021.

Khondowe said upon receipt of the information, the DEC constituted a team of investigators who instituted investigations in the matter.

Investigations revealed that the 15 flats belonged to Esther Nyawa Tembo Lungu and the same was confirmed in the lands and deeds register.

He said he wrote to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development requesting for the estimated cost of construction of the 15 blocks of double storey flats and it was revealed that the cost of the flats and other associated works on the properties, as at November 2022, was K41, 586, 110. 66.

Khondowe said he investigated Esther’s financial capacity, in relation to the properties acquired, and that he interviewed Brian Mutakwa, a branch manager at ZANACO were Esther holds an account since March 27, 1995 as a sole signatory.

“The bank account had 65 debit entries worth K2, 511, 117.09 and 79 credit entries with a gross total of about K3, 104, 487.14 as credit and debit turnover between January 1, 2012 and August 16, 2022,” Khondowe said.

“Both credit and debit turnover consisted of inter account transfers of K500, 000. 00 on May 4, 2020, May 4, 2021, August 3, 202, May 10, 2022 and August 3, 2022, thereby increasing turnover on both ends with no fresh inflows.”

It was also established that the Esther Lungu Foundation had a kwacha and dollar account at First National Bank (FNB) and that Esther was one of the signatories of the Kwacha account.

“The Kwacha account had total debit entries worth a gross total of K19, 459, 606. 86 and in this amount, there were placements of about K3, 000, 000 and US$20, 356.70 into fixed deposit accounts, which did not benefit Esther in her personal capacity,” Khondowe said.

In the dollar account, there was a credit balance of US$55, 115.57.

It was also established that Esther had no other income generating activities.

“I conducted an analysis of her known income and known expenditure for the period August 1, 2012 to August 16, 2022 which revealed an income of K3, 104, 487.14 against an expenditure of K2, 511, 117.09 with a variation of K593, 370.05,” said Khondowe.

“I did a comparison of the known income of K3, 104, 487.14 against the four properties with the 15 flats value at K24, 256, 434.55 which showed a variation of K21, 151, 947.41 above her known income.”

The secret conversations between Donald Trump and Edgar Chagwa Lungu begin

By Dr Munyonzwe Hamalengwa

Donald Trump (DT) to Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL):

Edgar, you in Zambia like using initials eh, ECL, HH, KK, FTJ, RB etc, what is up with that? Here it is rare. Only after Kennedy was shot did he become JFK. Can you imagine Bill Clinton being referred to as BC? That is a biblical reference isn’t it? But ECL that is not what I am calling about. I am calling to offer my condolences about just what happened to you. I just went through it myself. I got shellacked just like you in the last elections. Shellacked as a word was first used by Obama. I can’t stand Obama just like you can’t stand HH my dear friend ECL. So I refrain from using an Obama term. I will use the word walloped. It is truly painful to be walloped. I hear Hillary is still shell-shocked from my walloping her. ECL, for me it feels like it is merely a bad dream from which I will wake up and find reality different. But it is not. It is reality and shocking because I didn’t expect to lose by seven million votes walloping by Sleepy Joe. I lost to Sleepy Joe. I won.

You ECL, lost to what do they call those ostracised and sidelined people from certain parts of Zambia? Yes, you lost to a Tonga bull, I’m being reminded. Didn’t you say on the very day of the election that a Tonga will one day become a President but not the current candidate? That is what I used to say about Sleepy Joe.

Listen, ECL, like me you thought you could win the election by turning it into identifiable sectarianism, me into a racial contest where I would garner White votes and you would secure tribal votes against the Tongas and other named tribes. You unleashed, I understand, a certain Kambwili to spout tribalism, and like me it backfired, ECL. Let’s be serious, there is a lesson to be learned even from negativity. Our respective countries are moving more towards racial and tribal cohesion. We had done it all in order to win an election and continue being in power. It didn’t work.

ECL, do you know that you and I have a lot in common? Of course, we have our great differences; for example I went to the great Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and you didn’t but I don’t remember what I did there exactly other than chasing women. How did I pass? Can’t remember but it is on my transcript though the record is sealed. All my records are sealed except this stupid Supreme Court some of whose judges I appointed ordered the disclosure of my tax returns of several years.

ECL, you were lucky that the judges you appointed never abandoned you to the end. The ones I appointed decided to turn around and exercise their so-called judicial independence and autonomy. Have you ever heard of such crap? Judicial independence and autonomy! Give me a break! The problem in the US is that people do actually take that crap seriously; even judges. Don’t fall for it in Zambia.

Now ECL I was talking about our similarities. You and I pardoned heavy duty criminals. You pardoned murderers and tribalists while I pardoned deep, deep corrupt friends and associates of mine. We are who we pardoned. We are a reflection of who we pardoned. Look, you pardoned someone who made you lose an election because he was spewing tribalism and you had bought him a helicopter to do this. ECL, are you mad and tone deaf? You pardon a tribalist who made you partly lose an election! Are you a tribalist, ECL? It is good you retired from politics. There are rumours that you intend to run in 2026. Don’t. You buried yourself with that tribal nonsense. Now this tribalist who caused you to lose an election, wasn’t he recently exposed conniving with the Bank of Zambia governor to embezzle 30 million dollars through the issuing of bonds? I listened to that tape, the way it ended smells fishy. Something went down there.

But coming to the US, racism is fine. It is in the DNA of the US. It is historically embedded.

As for me, ECL, I pardoned corrupt people because that is me. I take advantage of the law. Taxation law is for the rich in capital letters. It aids corruption of the rich. Everything I did with my taxes is in the law. I took advantage of the loopholes. Can you succeed in business without the aid of banking and taxation laws, without insolvent laws, without insurance laws? We are hard on the poor yet we are aided by how banking, taxation, insurance, insolvency, procurement and other laws are structured. Our crimes are legally facilitated, ECL. Look at the acquittal rates in your corruption cases. Your people were all acquitted. Then you go and pardon murderers. If I did that, ECL, there would have been a revolution in America. Your regime killed a few people, didn’t it? So it is understandable you pardoned murderers. We pardon who we are. And it is what it is. Cheer up man. It is not the end of the world. Depressing but life goes on. Enjoy your wealth while it lasts. I have been charged criminally for using legal taxation and banking laws. You haven’t yet been charged. Brace, however, for the possibility of your immunity and impunity being stripped.

It is great you didn’t appeal your election loss. You see what the judges that I had appointed did to me after I lost the election. They all voted against me to overturn the elections in all the states. There is a guy called the Village Author whose articles I read who said that “you lose the vote you lose the court”. That court of yours that you appointed would have turned against you post-election.

ECL, are you there? You and I didn’t recognise where the lies and truths began or ended and vice versa. People saw through the fog and they voted us out. Now there is a difference. I had a vision of how to run America, you didn’t. I governed through Twitter and lots of press conferences and an effective DT congress. You governed through cadres; no press conferences except at airports and you had no Twitter account and no effective parliament. ECL, how could you lose Bill 10? You would still be President. Then you got another shot at the presidency through the ConCourt decision allowing you an illegal third term. But the Court of Public Opinion shellacked you, not Obama again. ECL, Obama is always in my mind as HH will always be in your mind. You see, I couldn’t get rid of Obamacare through Congress and that still pains me. And a similarity is found here. HH is the Obama of Zambia. Brilliant, agile, confident, and self-made and with loyal followers.

ECL, are you still there? I am the one who called you so I will talk. When you call me, ECL, you will talk all you want. Do you have a powerful phone?

ECL, I have loyal followers and you don’t. My followers stormed Congress to stop the legitimation of Sleepy Joe and they are still eating out of my hands. I raised more money after losing power than I did while in power and the Republican Party is holding together thinking I will run in 2024. On the other hand you have been abandoned immediately after losing power. Did you really have any loyal supporters, ECL? Your cadres have scampered. Your former ministers and cohorts are resigning or are silent. Your cadres never attempted to prevent the ascendance of HH. Your party the PF it appears is dead. I have charisma. You don’t. ECL, how did you ascend to power? And how exactly did you manage to repress Zambians for seven years? People are like waking up to a bad dream. On my part the great Republican Party will continue.

I can’t resist asking you, ECL, where that woman Pamela Gondwe is. I am told she ran away with suitcases of your campaign funds so that at the end you were practically limping without funds to pay cadres and some rigging projects. In America Pamela Gondwe would be the stuff of movies. You know how Americans are: you are either a mystical villain or hero. She would be turned into a folklore hero. If you meet her tell her that DT of America wants to meet her.

ECL, let me ask you this because you may have to answer to it if any Commission of Inquiry to Restore Looted Property under your regime is convoked. I hear Zambians want an Inquiry .What is your net worth now as opposed to when you became president? I understand you jumped from K1 million to K23 million in one year after assuming the presidency. They don’t teach what you did at Wharton or Harvard Business School, nor at Oxford. Do you want to come and teach at Wharton School of Business? I can facilitate that. I contributed a lot of money to that institution. It got more interesting you are now rumoured to be one of the richest presidents in Africa. The president’s salary even in the US or anywhere in the world can’t get you to that. Look at Obama, he got paid 60 million dollars for his book and all his money is traceable. My money is traceable as I used legal banking and taxation laws to borrow and invest.

What you have now where did it come from? I hear even your family has gotten rich, some having acquired forests, old bank buildings, apartments etc. Do you own a golf course, ECL? Get a good number of accountants and lawyers and start working in case the commission is established. I never knew I would need lawyers as I needed bankers as company. Obama told me at the outset that I would need more lawyers at the end of my presidency than I would need bankers and he was so right. The irony is that he never needed any lawyers himself because he was suspected of no crimes. Instead he now needs bankers to bank his legitimately earned monies from book deals and speaking engagements while you and I need lawyers and bankruptcy laws and not bankers. But heck ECL we had a ride of a lifetime while it lasted. We were both improbable accidental presidents and our story continues and would become more interesting and sellable if we both become criminal ex-presidents though I had a lot of money in the business world before I became president and you didn’t and I have kept my loyal friends and the Republican Party while you haven’t. Our stories, ECL, will be told as capsules and teachable moments in the history of our countries. Take heart it is a great contribution.

Now, all my contribution to American life will evaporate if I am convicted of any of the 38 Federal charges of obstruction of justice, violation of the Espionage Act, illegal possession of classified documents etc that have recently been slapped on me by a special prosecutor. ECL, do you have a law authorising appointment of special prosecutors? I may also be charged with election interference in Georgia and also for the insurrection on the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. ECL, I hope you never get charged during your post presidency life. It is good you resisted those like, I am told, Antonio Mwanza who you publicly named I understand who had urged you to resist transfer of power. Antonio, I am told has resigned from the PF. You lose an election, you lose stalwarts. You lose an election you lose the court.

You know what, ECL, my resurrection depends on winning the next presidential election of 2024. The election is the politics of my only defence. Politics as a defence. Watch this space.

POST TURTLES; THE CASE OF OPPOSITION MASQUERADES

POST TURTLES; THE CASE OF OPPOSITION MASQUERADES

“Ignorance can be cured, but stupidity is forever.”

— Aristophanes

Listening to them “POST TURTLES” masquerading as Opposition political party leaders every time they gather is proving to me how irrelevant they are in our current politics. They always fail lamentably to raise issues of public importance.

These “POST TURTLES” Opposition masquerades are a bunch of egocentric chaps all concerned about the promotion of personal sympathies and riding on past positions. They lack the ability to tell the nation issues of national importance. Their cry is nothing but about being out of public office and blaming the voters for kicking them out and putting them “KU WIRE”. Zambia’s “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerade parties are accountable for their failure to provide the voting public a meaningful alternative to the ruling UPND. They are to blame for their lack of political wisdom.

The “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerades have poor strategies but possess in them well organised errors that render them electorally unattractive. Collectively, in their current form, these opposition masquerades lack legitimacy as contenders for government power.

Self-inflicted arrests and crimes committed while in office will not transform them “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerades into a bunch of meaningful competitors and government-in-waiting. They have no viable, alternative economic management strategy to better satisfy the interests of a diverse voting public. They don’t have a well-developed broad based political strategy targeting the diverse voting public to build voter confidence in the capability of their diminishing parties as possible government. The ruling UPND’s track record of two years of sustained economic growth leaves a formidable challenge to the opposition.

These “directionless”, opposition masquerades will forever be yapping Hakainde this, Hakainde that. Even when they fail to find sleep they want to blame it on Hakainde.

I would like to advise the Opposition masquerades to quickly heal from their agitation on who is President of Zambia. Let them understand what being in opposition means. Let them spare a thought for the issues concerning the common man. The self-inflicted noise they are making is the death knell of cheap politics. The same petty politics that was rejected in 2021.

These opposition masquerades have fundamental right to express their thoughts. However, any illegality in their remarks is subject to scrutiny. Any illegally acquired assets, stealing for the future while in office is subject to investigations and those found wanting will be locked up. Where there is normality no one will be arrested. The last government had several Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Ambassadors, High Commissioners and other public servants. Not all are on the investigation roll. Only those that thought the rare privilege of serving this republic was a blank cheque to abuse and loot. The number of positions one may have held in public life is not immunity.

These “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerades should learn to appreciate every time they call for a press briefing. Two years ago this country had reached the peak of undemocratic human rights abuses. Lives were lost. Citizens had guns pointed at them in their faces, leaving them urinating in their pants and probably hitting number two. The likes of Obvious Mwaliteta, Trevor Mwiinde were locked up for no reason, and so were many others. Likando Mufalali was brutally beaten and hand broken. The nation was divided on tribal lines, and now we are healing these “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerades want that song to continue playing so they can continue dancing hoping the masses join them. Please spare us the idiocycrancy.

Finally I suggest these “POST TURTLES” opposition masquerades dress in clown consumes at their next press briefing because that is what they are. Gunyu Masaka is available for all consultation’s

THE PERIOD WHEN ZAMBIA INTRODUCED POLYMER BANK NOTES

THE PERIOD WHEN ZAMBIA INTRODUCED POLYMER BANK NOTES

In the year 2003, Zambia became the first country in Africa to issue polymer bank notes. The main reason presented for the introduction of the polymer bank notes was that they would be more durable than the paper bank notes. During this time, the 500 Kwacha note and the 1000 Kwacha note were the most utilised notes by the people when carrying out day to day transactions and so these two notes were chosen for the polymer notes project.

In order to avoid confusion, the look of the notes in terms of colour was kept the same as the paper notes which they were replacing. The contract to print the notes was won by the Canadian Banknote Company and so they were responsible for printing the new 500 Kwacha and 1000 Kwacha polymer notes. With great fanfare, the Bank of Zambia launched the new notes in September 2003. However due to some problems with some of the bank notes caused by the printing company, there was a recommencement of the distribution of the polymer notes. The recommencement was done in November 2003 and the new polymer bank notes went out to the people.

Warnings were issued by the Bank of Zambia to the general public to ensure that people wouldn’t subject the new polymer notes to experiments. The general public was warned that their curiosity should not lead them to start doing things such as pouring liquids on the notes or setting the notes on fire just for them to see what happens when they do so.

The 500 Kwacha note was colour brown in order to keep the colour of the paper version. The note had a number of culturally significant features. At the front of the 500 Kwacha note there was a fish eagle perched on a tree branch (the fish eagle is Zambia’s national bird). Also on the front there was a picture of a Baobab tree (a tree that is native to Zambia and some other African countries). At the back of the 500 Kwacha note there was a picture of people picking cotton which symbolized hardwork and also an image of the freedom statue which symbolized Zambia’s independence struggle. Also on the back of the note there was a picture of the head of an elephant which was a tribute to Zambia’s wildlife.

The 1000 Kwacha note retained the bright green and red colours which were on the paper version. On the front of the note featured a Jacaranda tree (which happens to be a tree widely planted on the sides of many Zambian roads). Also on the front there was a fish eagle perched on a tree branch. At the back of the 1000 Kwacha note was a picture of sorghum farming and next to that there was an image of the freedom statue. The back of the bank note also had a picture of an Aardvak on the left side (an Aardvak is a unique animal found in Zambia and some other African countries).

One very distinctive feature which appeared on both notes was a dove in flight which formed a see through window which is visible on both sides of the note. The dove is generally regarded as a symbol of peace.

Both notes also carried the national coat of arms on the bottom front. Alongside the serial numbers written across the front of the notes there were also many other intricate security marks. The notes also featured the signature of the then Bank of Zambia governor Dr Caleb Fundanga.

In 2012, the Kwacha rebasing programme was initiated and these two polymer notes were phased out. The 1000 Kwacha note was replaced by a 1 Kwacha coin and the 500 Kwacha note was replaced by the 50 Ngwee coin.

The polymer notes are no longer in usage and have now memerely remained as a memory of history. Those who used them have their own unique memories of when they used these notes and the things they bought with these notes. Some people still keep the polymer notes as memorabilia.
