Munir Zulu is not supposed to be in the dock alone, Fube tells court

Munir is not supposed to be in the dock alone, Fube tells court

CHILUBI Member of Parliament, Mulenga Fube says he was shocked to learn that his friend, Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu was in the dock alone when they jointly spoke at a presser birthed the whole defamatory case.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15ANhYweBo/?mibextid=oFDknk

Fube said Zulu was not supposed to be alone in the dock when the two had organised the presser together which was held at parliament grounds on March 21, 2023.

“From where I stand, anything to do with that presser, no one should take out the other person since there were two speakers there, you can’t pick one and forego what the other said. That presser was planned. That presser should be understood as joint and it’s a package that should be taken as one,” said.

It was at this point that his lawyer noticed that his client was going astray and quickly guided him.

Fube further told Lusaka Chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili that the intention of the presser was to speak to Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) and the intention was for ACC to simply clarify whether the two ministers received money from a Lusaka businessman.

In aiding Zulu’s case, Fube said what was spoken by Zulu when he mentioned individuals does not amount to defaming but trying to alert the ACC on the alleged charges.

Fube was testifying in a matter Zulu is charged with defamation.

Zulu is said to have issued defamatory matters against Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane during a press conference in which he alleged that the Finance Minister corruptly received money amounting to US$250,000 through a bank transfer from unknown company.

He also published defamatory matters against Charles Milupi at the same event alleging that Milupi corruptly received money amounting to US$250,000 through a bank transfer from unknown company.

Lastly, Zulu is accused of publishing defamatory words against Mulchad Kuntawala, a businessman that he corruptly sent money amounting to US$150,000 to Milupi two days before being appointed as a board chairperson for Road Development Agency (RDA).

Zulu was found with a case to answer and put on defence to tell his side of story.

In his defence, he denied the allegations placed on him.

And Nkana Member of Parliament, Binwell Mpundu aged 42, told the court that the information of Zulu’s arrest came as a shock, because he was merely arrested for doing his job.

“This matter has put us as a caucus in a very awkward situation, the fact that by law we are supposed to be protected with the statements we make within the confines of Parliament,” said Mpundu.

He added that Zulu and other MP’s including him are members of African Paliamentaries Network Against Corruption (APNAC) who speak matters of corruption and act as whistle blowers.

“Sometimes we speak to matters that we do not have facts and are not verified and it is our intensions that when we bring that matter the responsible people will address and give clarity, it is in that spirit that the privilege act was enacted so that it gives a cover of protecting to us in an event that the matters we raise individuals may want to mitigate on,” he said.

Mpundu said the statement was not a written one, Zulu spoke and so defamation cannot stand.

The court has since adjourned the matter to March 7, 2025…https://kalemba.news/court/2025/03/05/munir-is-not-supposed-to-be-in-the-dock-alone-fube-tells-court/

Court convicts ZNBC Top Stories News page admins for publishing seditious content

Court convicts ZNBC Top Stories News page admins for publishing seditious content.

THE Lusaka Magistrates’ court has fined a medical student and two others a K10,000 in default to six months of simple imprisonment after they were found guilty of creating a Facebook page “ZNBC Top Stories News” in order to publish seditious content.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15ToLRkJrm/?mibextid=oFDknk

Alick Sakala, 21, of Kitwe, Chimango Luhanga, 25, a chef and Samuel Mwene, 23, a medical student both from Mtendere in Lusaka were charged with four counts of use of insulting language and Identity related crimes contrary to the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged in count one that Sakala
on unknown dates but between January 27, 2024 and February 29, 2024 as a page admin of a Facebook Account circulated insults on ZNBC Top Stories Online News.

And Sakala jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown did knowingly without lawful excuse by using a computer system transfer, possessed and used, identification of another person to insult or annoy people on traffic data.

It is also alleged that Sakala, Luhanga and Mwene jointly and whilst acting together created a page on Facebook in the names of ZNBC Top Stories Online News to publish seditious content.

Further allegations states that Luhanga knowingly without lawful excuse by using a computer system transfer, possessed and used, identification of another person to insult or annoy people on traffic data.

The convicts were found guilty upon their own admission of guilt and convicted on the said charges.

The court ruled that Sakala and Luhanga should each pay K10,000 cash or in default to six months simple imprisonment, while Mwene was fined K2,400 or in default to six months imprisonment.

In rendering judgement, magistrate Constance Kansankala said the three needed to be punished to set an example to would-be offenders who abuse the cyber space.

In mitigation, the accused persons through their lawyer asked for leniency stating that they are all if youthful age who deserves a second chance for them to amend their ways.

“All the three are remorseful for their actions and they pledge not to offend again . The period they have been in custody has taught them valued lessons. They have pleaded guilty without wasting your time.”

“The offence do not only carry mandatory sentence therefore your hands are not tied. They are at your leniency. As you consider meeting out your sentence, may you put that into consideration and as already stated they are youths who are not working therefore the fine must also not be higher, infact they pray that you find it in your infinite Wisdom to give them a non custodial sentence,” lawyer pleaded on their behalf.

However, court said they abused the cyber space and needed to be punished.

“I have taken into consideration that they were youthful and had shown remorse for the actions. I also consider that they are first offenders who readily admitted to the offence. However, there is an increase use of social media by youths to commit crimes,” magistrate Kansankala said.

She found them guilty and convicted accordingly.

“Accused number one and two a fine of K180 and K10,000 fine on count two count three, Accused number three fined K2,400 the sentence to run non cumulative
on or before March 28, 2025 or six months simple imprisonment.”

“This means the accused persons will pay the highest amount before March 28 or serve or serve six months simple imprisonment,” magistrate Kansankala ruled.

POVERTY RANKING SHAMEFUL-Amb Anthony Mukwita

POVERTY RANKING SHAMEFUL

Amb Anthony Mukwita

5th Mar 25

The prevailing global poverty ranking of Zambia is a disgrace says International Relations analyst and author Amb. Anthony Mukwita in an interview with Millenium TV in Lusaka.

Amb. Mukwita adds that the ‘upward adjustment’ of the high cost of living in Zambia announced by the JCTR recently only makes the Zambia economic and poverty outlook look ‘gloom’.

“It’s shameful for the 2nd largest producer of copper in Africa to be ranked 6th poorest nation on earth,” Amb. Mukwita said, “ it’s even worse that the JCTR says an average family of five in Lusaka now needs almost K12,000 to survive on basic food alone before rent, transport and other important bills.”

Up to 64 percent of Zambia’s population of about 20 million people live in abject poverty according to official statistics which are worrying.

The diplomat turned author and analyst said the challenge now is ‘on the government to create an atmosphere that shall give birth to a path to job creation and poverty reaction.’

Amb. Mukwita was speaking in a rare interview conducted by 15 year old teen-age high school girls commemorating the International Broadcasting Day for Children or IBDC that falls annually on 2nd March.

He advised the high school guest Hostesses Ruth Mvula and Naomi Luyando to nurture their dreams and turn them into reality.

“Tomorrow you (interviewers) could be President Hichilema, President Edgar Lungu, Ellen Degenress or Tyra Banks,” said Amb. Mukwita, “work hard and achieve your dreams so that you can contribute to national building in future because ‘imiti ikula empanga’.”
The seasoned envoy also used the IBDC platform to implore the government to reduce the ever escalating cost of food and general living as inflation gallops out of the roof.

“It’s sad that some Zambians are now going to sleep hungry or surviving on one meal when we are the number two super copper producer and exporter including emeralds,” said Amb. Mukwita.
The IBDC theme this year was “Ending Violence against Children through Safe Media.”

Amb. Mukwita also commended Millennium TV for coming up with an initiative to have children actually ‘take control’ on their international day.

ITS NOW FIRE, SAYS UPND AS IT CHANGES ITS MEDIA TEAM

ITS NOW FIRE, SAYS UPND AS IT CHANGES ITS MEDIA TEAM

The ruling party, UPND says it is now going to be fire heading to 2026 elections.

Unveiling the new media team, the UPND says the team put up is upto task to counter the propaganda.

Cornelius Mweetwa who doubles his Spokesperson role for Government and the party announced the new team replacing the old one led by Ruth Dante which has been in office since 2006.

Mark Simuwe who has been calling himself as a UPND Consultant replaces Ms Dante. He will now have an official position at the party Secretariat as Media Director.

Sikwindi an old UPND member who at some time had left the party with Sakwiba Sikota to form United Liberal Party will deputise Simuuwe. He has no media background just like his senior and replaces Cheelo Katambo a long time royal Journalist who quit his job at to help the party.

Both Ms Dante and Kataambo are Journalists. They have however been accused of being ineffective. Not knowing the terms of condition for such a position at the UPND.

Mweetwa also named another party Supporter Oliver Chalala who has been arguing with Emmanuel Mwamba on Facebook as UPND Consultant. This is the position Simuuwe carried himself under.

He said Ms Dante and her team will now work under the leadership of Simuuwe as members of the media team.

President Hakainde Hichilema has also appointed a team of Ministers to the Ministerial Media team to articulate the government policies.

Mweetwa named Health Minister Muchima, Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga, and Transport Minister Tayali as part of the team.

Others are Community Development Ms Mwamba and Nominated member of Parliament Mufalali.

Elvis Nkandu who is Sports and Youth Development Minister has been appointed as Party Deputy Spokesperson. He will deputise Mweetwa.

The names were unveiled at a media briefing on Tuesday, 4th March 2025 at Ministry of Information and Media.

The Ministers will feature in various media platforms to articulate government policies which Hichilema belief is not well explained to the people.

The UPND says it has done alot which needs to be explained to the country. Recently the UPND government appointed some Journalists to all Ministries to help in the information dissemination.

The Hakainde Hichilema regime is working round the clock to ensure it secures a second term of office.

There are fears it could lose the 2026 elections making it a one term office due to a number of key unfulfilled campaign promises.

A REBUTTAL TO Ambassador MUKWITA’S POVERTY RANKINGS COMMENTARY

A REBUTTAL TO Ambassador MUKWITA’S POVERTY RANKINGS COMMENTARY.

By Timmy

Ambassador Anthony Mukwita’s recent remarks on Zambia’s poverty rankings are not only misleading but also shameful, considering his involvement in the previous government that contributed to the country’s economic woes.

It’s ironic that Ambassador Mukwita is now speaking out against poverty when his own party’s policies and actions led to widespread corruption, mismanagement of resources, and ultimately, the suffering of many Zambians

The fact that Zambia is ranked 6th poorest nation on earth is indeed a disgrace, but it’s essential to acknowledge the role of the previous government in perpetuating poverty. Ambassador Mukwita’s attempt to shift the blame to the current administration is a classic case of deflection.

Moreover, his statement that Zambia’s copper production should be enough to eradicate poverty is oversimplified and ignores the complexities of the global economy. As you pointed out, copper ore extraction now requires sophisticated machinery, and our neighbors with similar mineral wealth are also struggling with poverty.

Furthermore, it’s essential to recognize that the previous government’s top officials, including former President Edgar Lungu’s children, have amassed enormous wealth, with multiple properties, cars, and farms. This stark contrast between the wealth of the elite and the poverty of the masses is a testament to the previous government’s failures.

Rather than offering constructive criticism, Ambassador Mukwita’s comments come across as an attempt to mock and belittle the current government’s efforts to address poverty. His advice to “nurture dreams and turn them into reality” rings hollow when considering his own role in perpetuating the status quo.

We deserve better from our leaders and commentators. It’s time for Ambassador Mukwita to take responsibility for his actions and acknowledge the harm caused by his party’s policies.

The UPND government, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, has made significant strides in addressing poverty and promoting economic development. These efforts include:

– Increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation, empowering local authorities to implement region-specific projects and drive grassroots development.
– Improved infrastructure development, including the construction of roads, schools, and healthcare facilities.
– Enhanced community safety, through the construction of police posts and other security initiatives.

These developments demonstrate the UPND government’s commitment to addressing poverty and promoting economic development.

UK will not pay Rwanda more for scrapped migrant deal

UK will not pay Rwanda more for scrapped migrant deal

…but Kagame says pay the £50m ($64m)you owe on the project….

The UK government has said it will not send further payments to Rwanda following the cancellation of the migrant deal between the two countries.

On Monday, Rwanda’s government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said the UK had asked Rwanda to “quietly forgo” the remaining payment – reportedly amounting to £50m ($64m) – based on “trust and good faith”.

However, Rwanda has now asked the UK to pay the remainder of the money it says it is owed, accusing the UK of breaching trust by suspending some aid to the country.

In a statement, a UK government spokesperson said that “no further payments in relation to this policy will be made and Rwanda has waived any additional payments”.

The row over payments linked to the Rwanda scheme comes after the UK government announced it would halt bilateral aid to the east African country last month, except for “support to the poorest and most vulnerable”.

The UK took the decision to cut aid after accusing the country of supporting M23, a rebel group that has captured swathes of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in a deadly uprising.

The aid cuts have amounted to “unjustified punitive measures to coerce Rwanda into compromising our national security”, Makolo said on Monday.

Rwanda has often denied backing the M23 rebel group, but has recently been more defensive, saying it has had to take measures to deal with the “existential threat” posed by genocidal militia near its borders.

UN experts have previously estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops are in eastern DR Congo.

Makolo said Rwanda would now be “following up” on outstanding payments relating to the migrant deal to which the UK was “legally bound”.

The plan to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda, devised by the previous Conservative government in 2022, cost the UK £240m ($310m) before being scrapped by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Speaking in July last year, shortly after being elected, Starmer said the plan was “dead and buried”, arguing that the scheme had “never been a deterrent” and would only deport “less than 1%” of small boat arrivals.

In a statement, a UK government spokesperson said: “The Home Secretary has been clear that the costly Migration and Economic Development Partnership with Rwanda wasted tax-payer money and should not continue.”

2021 ELECTIONS: UNTOLD STORIES Part II – Brian HAPUNDA

UNTOLD STORIES Part II

By Brian HAPUNDA

This particular footage was captured at a polling station in Monze, Southern Province on the day of voting 🗳 on 12th August, 2021.

Unfortunately the pattern was same in most polling stations across Southern Province where some UPND members and UPND cadres took turns to beat, intimidate and chase away all election polling agents and election monitors from other political parties leaving only UPND polling agents and UPND election monitors and the voting continued as if nothing had happened.

I remember I joined President Lungu at State Lodge soon after I had cast my vote at UNZA Sports Hall. I spent the whole day with him. He received numerous intelligence briefs as per procedure of what was transferring across the country on that voting day. Of most disturbing reports were coming from Southern and North Province.

President Lungu was well briefed of the political violence that was taking place in most polling stations and centres in Southern Province and North Western Province where PF polling agents and other polling agents from opposition parties were being chased away from polling stations and stopped to monitor the voting exercise. Police officers watched helplessly and some Police officers actually ran away from these police stations for safety.

President Lungu’s phones were buzzing constantly and most calls were distress calls of what was happening in Southern Province and North Western Province. The Party Secretary General then Davis Mwila was also on constant phone with President Lungu and at about 10am, President Lungu received another distress call from his Party Secretary General and this time a few seconds into the phone conversation, President Lungu stood up from where he was sitting while talking on phone and took a few steps away and he was quite for some few minutes on phone listening to the caller. He returned to his seat and said, “Kungo nabepaya ku Solwezi kuli ma UPND cadres as he was distributing food stuffs to PF polling agents at a named polling station”. Kungo was PF Provincial Chairman for North Western Province.

At this point President Lungu was advised if he could consider cancelling the elections owing to the numerous political violence that had rocked the general elections making the elections not free, fair and transparent. He kept quite for a while and in his usual soft calm voice he responded and said, “if I cancelled this election as Commander in Chief, bantu bengi balafwa”! If I cancelled this election as Commander in Chief, alot of people will die and I don’t want to have blood on my hands.

To be President is not easy. One has to be very sober and one must love the people more than him/herself.

The rest is history as we all saw for ourselves what happened when results started being announced and in what pattern the results were in especially in Southern Province, Western and North Western Province.

THE NUMBER ONE LYING TV STATION IN ZAMBIA – AN EDITORIAL SATIRE

THE NUMBER ONE LYING TV STATION IN ZAMBIA – AN EDITORIAL SATIRE

Yesterday, Chief Clarifications, Professor, Confucius Mutentwa, launched a scathing attack on the KBN TV Government, branding the people’s Government as a number 1 television liar in the nation.

He did so knowing fully well that as a television station in power, we cannot really defend ourselves against what we said and promised the Zambian viewers in 2021.

Given that Professor Mutentwa is the Chief spokesperson for the viewers, we hold that what he said was a valid observation and position of majority viewers against us as a ruling television station in power.

Instinctively, we wanted to take advantage of our constitutional right to reply so we can defend ourselves against such unwarranted attacks.

But on second thoughts, we realized there’s no need to defend ourselves. Professor Mutentwa was right. As a ruling television Government, we promised a lot of lies just to get into power as a number 1 television station.

In fact, we are dead worried; we don’t think that the Zambian people will forgive our lies and give us a second viewing chance. That’s why we have made a decision to keep people like Professor Mutentwa in check because if they continue talking too much against our programming, they might end up influencing more viewers to switch to other channels that are promising viewers backwards because forward seems challenging.

You will recall, we promised that as soon as you switch on KBN at 10hrs, the programming will be so captivating that by 14hrs, the dollar will clap for us and fall on its knees out of respect. We are sorry we lied because today, one dollar is nearly an equivalent of K30.

In trying to gain more viewership, we promised to scrap off the cyber security law on the first day in office. Here too, we are sorry for lying to you the viewers, Professor Mutentwa was right, we have changed after realizing that it’s a good law that will cure rampant social media menace. Cyber law is not going anywhere, in fact the supreme leader wants to stiffen it even further!

The study by Professor Mutentwa into our viewership is very insightful. How else could we have won to become the number 1 lying television station in power if we didn’t promise to remove middle men from the fuel supply chain?

We promised to bring fuel down from K17 to K12 per liter. We are sorry, Professor Mutentwa called us out, we lied because today, fuel is twice the price at  K35 per liter.

We apologize for lying to our viewers. In fact in his thesis, Professor Mutentwa reminds us  that in courting the viewership segment among farmers, we promised to reduce fertilizer to K250 per bag, we are sorry this too was another lie that qualifies us to be the number one lying television station in power.

Playing in the champions league of lying as a number one television station, we needed to promise our viewers the rotary of K50 per bag of mealie meal but due to factors beyond our control, the average mealie meal price is now K400. Do you think this is also a lie?

As for loadshedding, in one of our broadcasts, we castigated the other television stations as lacking the quality of vision. Those channels blamed drought and subjected viewers to 8hrs of loadshedding per day.

Well, our viewership has since dropped significantly because of many days of continuous darkness across the country. We lied that we would fix these problems, clearly as the supreme leader said, running a nation “simasobela iyai.” We are sorry that we have become but a mockery among our television viewers.

We know, please don’t remind us. When one of our presenters called the Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda as Lucifer, we lied that we had rendered an editorial apology, in fact, there is no need to apologize because we are going from Lusaka to Chipata!

The Auxiliary Bishop of Chipata, Rev. Gabriel Msipu Phiri, has become a notorious viewer who calls in with disparaging remarks during our live broadcasts. He recently got excited and questioned our investment into new programming over the last 4 years. We are targeting him as an individual and ensure that his decoder is switched off!

He can’t continue watching our champion’s league programming and still attacking us at the same time, aikona man!

Please inform Professor Mutentwa that we are about to fire our news correspondent at JCTR for reporting yet another lie that the cost of living now stands at K11,500 when we promised to reduce the cost of living and improve the quality of life for all our viewership categories.

Anyway, thanks for watching the number one lying television station, we promise to fix the economy, the only problem is we have realized after watching VAR, we lied about not bringing back Vedanta!

As the number 1 lying television station, we really don’t want to lie because we are a channel of angels but we are conflicted with the reality that when we say “taking your viewership experience forward” what we really mean is black and white television!

Just remember our promise, what will happen in Zambia over the next five years, will be the greatest economic transmission in Africa, yes our five years hasn’t just started counting yet, that’s why you can’t see anything.

In fact, we just got another news report that the supreme leader has ordered glue from China to fix the seat, we hear that glue only expires in 2031!

We can go on and on but the truth is Professor Mutentwa was right! We lied to our viewers but please don’t switch to another channel, keep watching KBN TV, the number 1 lying television in Zambia on DStv 279, GOtv 27 and TopStar 102.- KBN TV

Kafwaya Slams UPND’s Priorities, Calls for Focus on Cost of Living Crisis

Kafwaya Slams UPND’s Priorities, Calls for Focus on Cost of Living Crisis

Lusaka, March 4, 2025

LUNTE Member of Parliament, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya, has strongly criticized the UPND government’s priorities, arguing that their focus on constitutional amendments and increasing constituencies is misplaced at a time when Zambians are grappling with economic hardships.

Debating the motion on thanks to the President’s address delivered during the State of the Nation Address (SONA), Hon. Kafwaya questioned the government’s rationale in pushing for constituency delimitation while citizens struggle with high mealie meal prices, fuel costs, and electricity shortages.

“Madam Speaker, how can a government that knows its people are hungry, that the cost of living is high, and that the debt mountain is growing, start considering delimiting constituencies?” Kafwaya asked. “Where will the money come from? This chamber cannot even contain the members who are here now. Are you telling me that you have to expand this chamber? Where will that money come from?”

The Lunte lawmaker accused the UPND administration of focusing on expanding government structures rather than addressing the pressing economic crisis.

“Madam Speaker, constituencies around the country do not even have constituency offices. They have to rent. The National Assembly has not finished building constituency offices. Where will the money come from?” he pressed.

He further challenged the logic behind increasing constituencies when the government claims it lacks funds for critical sectors such as agriculture and energy.

“People are experiencing load shedding for eight to twelve hours a day. Why don’t you put that money into importing electricity so that businesses can thrive? Why don’t you put money into agriculture so that the cost of living can start coming down?” he argued.

Hon. Kafwaya accused the government of prioritizing political convenience over the needs of ordinary Zambians.

“This government is thinking about putting money into leaders instead of the people. Constitutional amendments are not a priority for this country. What is a priority is solving the high cost of living, solving the debt mountain,” he emphasized.

Citing the President’s speech, Hon. Kafwaya also took issue with the government’s approach to governance, particularly the financial burden of ministerial involvement in council meetings.

“Let me give you an example, Madam Speaker. In Northern Province, in Kaputa, where a Member of Parliament is also a minister, every council meeting means a minister, a driver, a protocol officer, and fuel expenses for the people this is an additional cost to government. Is this the time to start thinking about increasing the cost of running government?” he questioned.

Hon. Kafwaya reiterated that the government’s focus should be on reducing the cost of essential commodities rather than expanding political structures.

“Madam Speaker, a 25kg bag of mealie meal is very expensive for ordinary Zambians. A bottle of cooking oil, not a container, but a bottle, is very expensive. Even 1kg of sugar is too expensive. These are the things the government should be focusing on because people are suffering now,” he charged.

He reminded the House that the opposition had previously warned the government against exporting maize and electricity, decisions he said have worsened the economic situation.

“We told them, ‘Don’t export maize.’ We told them, ‘Don’t export electricity.’ But what did they do? They exported. And where are we now? The cost of living is unbearable. Where are we now? How much is a 25kg bag of mealie meal today? Where is the electricity?”

Concluding his debate, Kafwaya firmly rejected any move to expand the cost of governance, stating that leaders must prioritize the people over political convenience.

“Madam Speaker, it is grossly irresponsible for leaders to be thinking about themselves. This is the time when they should be talking about reducing the cost of running government and putting the savings into the bellies of the people,” he said.

The debate continues as opposition leaders push for immediate economic interventions while the UPND government defends its governance strategy.

MPs HAVE A DUTY TO DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION AND FIGHT CORRUPTION, SAYS CHILUBI MP, MULENGA FUBE

MPs HAVE A DUTY TO DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION AND FIGHT CORRUPTION, SAYS CHILUBI MP, MULENGA FUBE

….as Nkana MP Binwell Mpundu calls for Parliamentarians’ protection when the alert Anti Corruption Commission of alleged corruption.

March 5, 2025. Lusaka

OPPOSITION PF Chilubi Member of Parliament Mulenga Fube has told the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court that parliamentarians have a mandate to defend the Republican Constitution and fight corruption to protect public resources for prudent utilisation.

And Nkana MP Mpundu says Parliamentarians had very heated conversations in relation to what they perceived as a questionable transaction of Public Private Partnership (PPP) of a dual carriage way from Lusaka to Ndola.

Mpundu told the court that being a member of the African Parliamentarian Against Corruption (APNAC), he had a duty to work alert the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) of any suspected corrupt deal involving public resources.

This is in a matter where Independent Lumezi MP Munir Zulu has been dragged to court by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane and Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi for alleged defamatory remarks made against them in connection to perceived corrupt manner on how the Ndola-Lusaka duel carriage way was being handled under a PPP arrangement.

Mbili Media captured the verbatim of the court proceedings when Fube appeared as a witness in the matter.

Below are the proceedings;

On that material day I have forgotten the day, we (The accused and Myself as APNAC members) received information during the 16:40 break at parliament, we felt moved to speak to the issue at hand.

I decided at that point to call Aquinos from Smart Eagles an online media so that we can bring the issue of suspected corruption inspired by the fact that as members of parliament and APNAC members, we have been looking for information especially that According to us, this was an issue that was suppose to be tabled in parliament as it has elements that qualified it to be under Article 210 of the constitution which intells that when public assets are being transferred into any other private apart from public institutions that can not be done without parliamentary approval.

Naturally as law makers,  we thought this deal smelled corruption because we did not understand how a contractor will be financed using public resources to construct a road and at the same time this contractor starts collecting toll fees for a projected period of 23 years before they finish the of the road.

From where I stand that is corruption and calling that a public private partnership is hiding corruption PPP.

I understand that public property like a road, building and any other infrastructure of commercial value should be constructed or built using private money  but for public use with the intention of getting the investment from the region that the same project generates out of its use.

Given that background,  when that information came through,  I got  very excited to play the role of the whistle blower as well as an oversight job given to me by the constitution of Zambia.

And at that point I decided to be part of the two man joint press conference… from where I stand,  anything to do with that presser, No one should take out the other person and forego what the other said.

That presser was planned.
That presser should be understood as joint and its a package that should be taken as one.

I am shocked your honor that the accused is in the accused box and am not.

Defense…
Avoid attaching your feelings but speak with regards to the case at hand.

Witness…
The charge has shocked me because this is a joint press we were the two of us.

The intention was to speak to ACC and have them clarify the claims within 24hrs.

I still maintain that it was joint and whatever was said is joint.

It was mandate to do an oversight role and am backed by the constitution in in article 210, article 61 and article 63.

I already talked of article 210.

In article 61,62 and 63, I am empowered to check on the executive.

Further,  article 2 of the constitution, empowers me to protect the constitution and before us was not just an ordinary question of corruption but the constitution matters too.

We needed to make sure that we did not come in conflict with the Parliamentary privilege act  supported by article 76 of the constitution we confined the presser within premises of parliament so that our roles as APNAC and members of parliament are qualified and you can not play the two roles without being members of our.

Court:

Your opinion and interpretations are not needed before this court but only your facts regarding this matter.

Witness..
The elements I referred to earlier, the motives of what was spoken, not written and the call of ACC  to investigate and explain to the public on what happened does not amount to individuals defaming as we needed to give a face to that possible allegation.
It was just proper that ACC is provided with the possible suspects.

It was going to be difficult and illogical even malicious of us to speak without identifying the possible suspects as we called on ACC to supply information about those we thought were suspected to be the people involved.

Our call was based on the fact that their public statements that are in public domain to the effects that ministers bring investigated are supposed to be withheld.

Unfortunately even the president has spoken to that regard of withholding names.

The vice president has spoken to the reality of withholding names.

One of the hallmarks of fighting against corruption is transparency and accountability.

We only called on the ACC to uphold one of their core values by educating the public on the Grey areas in the deal.

From where I stand, calling in the responsibility of a public body charged with duty to perform public duties even when there’s mention of identify does not amount to defaming the Person.

CROSS-EXAMINATION..

State:
There’s no doubt you were part of the address?

Witness:

Yes your honor.

Your called ACC to investigate Musokotwane and Milupi?

Yes.

Your honor we refer the witness to the press statement to ACC. Read paragraph 4.(the Commission is not investigating the two ministers). So the commission confirmed?

Yes.

Read against (the commission calls on Munir Zulu to lead the commission).. do you have proof of the allegations?

Defense…
Objection.

State:

Witness :.

The statement was not correct as then it was a corrupt  ACC and its in public domain that it was corrupt and they had to hide the information.. the statement is not authentic.

I maintain the ACC then was corrupt.

State:
Show proof…

Witness: Today I don’t have, given time, I can bring.

Defence : tell us your name, your age and occupation.

Witness: My name Binwell Mpundu 42 years old, a politician and Nkana Member of Parliament and APNAC Member.

On that day, I was made aware of the intention to have a presser by Hon Munir Zulu and Hon Mulenga Fube as am the treasurer of APNAC.
I did not attend that event only because I had a matter to attend to in the chambers. Where we had very heated conversations as parliamentarians in relation to what we perceived as a questionable transaction of Public Private Partnership (PPP) of a dual carriage way from Lusaka to ndola.

It happens that our two colleagues were speaking to information relating to the transaction.

Our role is more of a whistle blower on corruption.
Any information we receive suggesting acts of corruption, we have to engage the ACC.

I paid attention to the video after the accused was arrested over the same and it was shocking that they were being indicted for doing their job.

This matter has put us as Caulcus in an awkward situation from two ends especially that by law we are supposed to be protected as MP statements we make within the prisect of parliament and that we are partners with the Anti-Corruption Commission by way of us presenting perceived corruption acts to the ACC for action.

We now don’t know at what point the law will protect us in carrying out our duties and how far we can go in our duties.
Our job is more of speaking and sometimes we speak to matters whose facts can nor be verified and we hope that the responsible people will address and give clarity to those matters.

It in that spirit that the privileges act was enacted so that it can protect us in an event that the matters we raise individuals may want to litigate on.

The matter before court being of defamation and libel, as APNAC we wonder how a verbally altered word found itself on the libel charge.

CROSS-EXAMINATION….
State:
Are you aware that ACC responded to that?

Witness:
No am not aware.

State:
Read…(witness reads)
As treasurer of APNAC, you are not aware of this letter?

Witness…
Am not aware because ACC did not respond to us and the letter is addressed to the editor so I don’t know which editor.

State…
Are the responsibilities and privileges of Parliamentarians liable to offend others based on that?

Witnes: it depends

Defense…
Objection.
The witness is the witness facts, the question the state is asking may lead the witness to express his opinion.

State:
no further questions

Defence
I seek for adjustment as we had only two witness.

Court

I express my displeasure after hearing this adjournment after hearing from only 2 witnesses and the names of witnesses are within Lusaka.
Adjournment today after adjourning the matter on 5th February its so disappointing

I will adjourn the matter on March 7 and bring all witness I will have the whole day.

Musokotwane expresses shock over population growth

Musokotwane expresses shock over population growth

ZAMBIA’S population has dramatically surged from 13.1 million in 2010 to 19.7 million in 2022, according to the 2022 Census of Population and Housing results announced by Finance and National Planning minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane.

In a ministerial statement to Parliament yesterday, Dr Musokotwane expressed shock over the surge in population, stating that government made every effort to ensure that nearly everyone in the country was counted, despite having faced some challenges.

He noted that the census, conducted between August 18 and September 21, 2022, was the first ever fully digital exercise which meant that it came with improved accuracy and efficiency.

“We extended the counting period to include individuals who may have been overlooked. While it is possible that some were missed, significant efforts were made to capture Zambia’s full demographic picture,” he said.

The results shared that Lusaka remains the most populous province, growing from 2.1 million in 2010 to 3.09 million in 2022, a 41.2 percent increase fueled by urban migration.

According to the minister, Copperbelt followed closely, rising from 1.9 million to 2.7 million with a 40.4 perfect increase, largely due to mining activities.

However, it is North Western Province that recorded the highest growth rate at 75.8 percent having expanded from 727,000 to 1.27 million people.

Meanwhile, Central Province grew by 73 percent while Luapula, Western and Muchinga all recorded increases above 50 percent.

Eastern and Northern Provinces saw moderate growth at 45.2 percent and 46.8 percent respectively.

The census also revealed that 26.1 percent of the population falls within the 19-34 age bracket, up from 25.6 percent in 2010.

Dr Musokotwane read that this signals a growing workforce with both opportunities and challenges in employment and education.

Additionally, Zambia’s median age has increased from 16.9 years in 2010 to 18.3 years in 2022.

The age dependency ratio which measures the number of dependents per working age individual dropped from 92.5 to 81.2, indicating a potential boost in economic productivity.

A total of 47,941 people were recorded as living in institutions such as orphanages, correctional facilities and hospices with the highest numbers in Lusaka (10,961) and Copperbelt (8,179).

Homelessness remains a concern, particularly in urban areas as Lusaka recorded 1,918 homeless individuals, while 1,427 were reported on the Copperbelt.

“The number of households in Zambia has increased from 2.5 million in 2010 to 4.1 million in 2022, reflecting population growth and changing living patterns. At the same time, household sizes are shrinking, with the national average dropping from 5.2 people per household in 2010 to 4.8 in 2022,” said Dr Musokotwane.

Urban households have seen the biggest shift, with the average size falling from 5.1 to 4.6 persons, suggesting a trend toward smaller family units, likely driven by economic factors and urbanisation.

The minister assured that census data would be freely available to policymakers, researchers, and the public.

He said more reports, including studies on child marriage, disability and housing conditions will be released by August 2025 to support informed decision making.

“As a government, we are proactively responding to these demographic trends to ensure an inclusive and resilient future for all Zambians,” added Dr Musokotwane.

The 2022 Census cost approximately K967 million, with over 90 percent of the funding sourced from the Zambian government.

The minister confirmed that all census workers had been paid, though some delays were experienced due to verification processes.

EU donates equipment worth K72.5 million to Ministry of Lands

EU donates equipment worth K72.5 million to Ministry of Lands

THE European Union (EU) has donated survey and ICT equipment worth K72.5 million to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to help improve land management in Zambia.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1917dpZvem/?mibextid=oFDknk

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Lusaka yesterday, EU Ambassador Karolina Stasiak said the donation is part of the strong partnership between Zambia and the EU which has lasted for 50 years.

Stasiak said the donation was a result of over a year of collaboration between the EU and Zambian technical teams, aimed at improving land administration and governance.

“This equipment is a visible expression of our partnership and is part of a larger support package to modernize Zambia’s land management systems,” stated Stasiak.

The equipment includes 50 tablets, 70 desktop computers, 70 laptops, 15 printers, 74 scanners and four servers.

The ambassador added that the equipment will help with land audits, data storage for updated land maps and improve the Zambia Land Integrated Administration System (ZILAS).

Lands and Natural Resources minister Sylvia Masebo thanked the EU for the support, saying that it will help make land management better and benefit all Zambians.

“The EU’s assistance aligns with Zambia’s National Land Policy and the 8th National Development Plan, promoting sustainable land use and economic growth,” said Masebo.

The donation also happens to be part of a larger EU project worth 7.8 milion euros (K227 million) which includes €2.1 million for the Land Governance Support Project, focused on legal and institutional reforms.

€3.2 million for the National Land Audit Project, which is already underway, with the first pilot audit conducted in Serenje and €2.5 million for survey and ICT equipment to enhance efficiency in data collection and land mapping.

According to Masebo, the ministry has already received surveying equipment to set up 15 reference stations across the country.

She said the new servers will be placed at the National Control Center and Smart Zambia to store and manage land data.

The minister assured Zambians that government will use the equipment properly to improve land services for the people.

“This support from the EU is a testament to our strong partnership, and we remain committed to utilizing these resources effectively to achieve our land governance goals,” she said.

Serena Williams joins ownership of WNBA franchise Toronto Tempo

0

Retired tennis legend Serena Williams has reportedly joined the WNBA expansion franchise, the Toronto Tempo, three years after regular sporting action.

Williams already holds a minority stake in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, the NWSL’s Angel City FC, and TGL upstarts the Los Angeles Golf Club.

Despite playing a key role in sports over the years, Serena is going for more and has now joined the WNBA with the Canadian franchise that is set to feature in 2026 as the league’s 14th team.

This comes after the Golden State Valkyries were announced this year as the 13th franchise in the league.

Toronto Tempo announced Williams in a video with the quote ‘New Court, New Game’ as she was seen bouncing a tennis ball before switching to a basketball.

‘I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,’ Williams said in a news release.

‘This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes – I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.’

Recently, Williams got herself in the spotlight in the aftermath of her Super Bowl appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show.

The retired tennis legend who reportedly earned $94million during her tennis career has now chosen to invest in sports and is not holding back.

‘Serena Williams is a champion,’ Tempo President Teresa Resch said in a news release.

‘She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible.’

‘She’s set the bar for women in sport, business and the world – and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring – we’re thrilled to be marking the lead-up to International Women’s Day with this announcement.’

According to the Toronto Tempo, Williams will be crucial in the team that designs future jerseys and helps secure ‘unique merchandise collaborations’.

The Toronto Tempo are set to become the first non-American team to compete in the WNBA, although they are yet to sign any players to their roster.

Also, Toronto is home to the only non-American franchises in both the NBA and MLB aside from the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays.

The new move sounds like a great idea for Serena and Toronto, and their fans will be keeping close tabs on her collaboration with the club ahead of its participation in the WNBA in 2026.

Jay-Z Sues Lawyers And Woman Who Accused Him Of Sexual Assault

In a sort of retaliation, Jay-Z has reportedly sued the lawyers and the woman who accused him of rape, before the suit was eventually dismissed.

The musician indicates that attorneys, Tony Buzbee and David Fortney, and their client, Jane Doe, conspired to make knowingly false claims to inflict harm and extort money from him.

The complaint, Jane Doe, originally filed the sexual assault case against Sean Diddy Combs last October, adding that there was another “male celebrity” accomplice who she later named as Sean Carter, aka Jay Z.

According to Jay Z’s filing, the suit does not intend to expose Jane Doe’s identity but instead to “hold Doe accountable for her willful defamation.”

He added that lawyers for the complaint did not make sufficient efforts to vet the details of Jane’s accusations.

Jay-Z claims the lawyers had sent him an “extortionate” demand letter and anonymous lawsuit before naming him publicly.

According to him, subsequent interview by the complaint with NBC News was part of a malicious attempt to bring the story “before the world in court and on global television.”

Following the dismissal of the sexual assault lawsuit against Jay Z, last month, he was spotted for the first time in town with his partner, Beyonce.

Online photos showed the couple dining at an Italian Restaurant in New York City on the night of February 16, 2025.

The Young Forever singer had spoken on how the accusations caused trauma for him and his family, adding that the sexual assault lawsuit against him and Diddy cost him millions in partnerships.

“Immediately after Mr. Buzbee went public with his false accusations, my company Roc Nation lost contracts in the sports and entertainment space that would have generated revenues of approximately $20 million per year,” he claimed.

Jay Z was among prominent hip-hop personalities who paid their last respect to the late Irv Gotti at a private funeral service held at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

“Blessed Geza Will Give Signal for National Shutdown Soon”: Spokesperson

A group of war veterans, led by Zanu PF central committee member Blessed Geza, has broken its silence, reaffirming that a signal will be given when demonstrations calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s removal should begin.

The group went underground after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) declared Geza a wanted man, accusing him of undermining the president’s authority and inciting public violence.

In a video released on Sunday night, the group’s spokesperson, Knox Chivero, spoke from an undisclosed location, claiming Mnangagwa had dispatched death squads to hunt them down with orders to kill.

Chivero said they would not rush the decision to call for a national shutdown, using a Shona idiom that translates to: “running is not arriving.” He assured supporters that Geza would soon return to Zimbabwe to lead the national shutdown.

Chivero said:

“Let me assure you that the liberating signal from Cde Geza is coming very soon. As you will appreciate, this is a mammoth task because this is a people’s project; it’s not an individual’s project. Organisation and sufficient managerial competence to manage the public is essential. It means the planning and the execution and the management of the aftermath must be very meticulous so that we have the best results at minimal costs.”

In the video, Chivero sat near a window in a darkened room but did not reveal his location or Geza’s whereabouts.

He emphasized that the war veterans, who accuse Mnangagwa of economic mismanagement and attempting to establish a political dynasty, were committed to a peaceful protest.

“A good soldier, a good commander is one who wins the war with minimal loss but the best commander is one who wins a war without firing a bullet. This is precisely the philosophy of managing mass organisations and mass demonstrations whilst you’re in the belly of the beast which has deployed its dogs of war, hit squads and ferret teams specially trained in Belarus to hit, not to arrest,” Chivero said.

Chivero further alleged that assassins tasked with hunting them down had been embedded within police units, including the law and order division and homicide detectives.

He said:

“So you will appreciate what we are planning against and what we are fighting against. We are fighting against a vicious enemy who has no respect for human beings. Cde Geza was actually followed by 10 different units or assassins to shoot at first sight without the option of arrest and giving the reason that ‘he resisted arrest that’s why we shot him’.”

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON THE 2022 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING RESULTS RELEASE BY HON DR. SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, MP MINISTER OF FINANCE AND NATIONAL PLANNING

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON THE 2022 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING RESULTS RELEASE BY HON DR. SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, MP MINISTER OF FINANCE AND NATIONAL PLANNING.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Madam Speaker, allow me to begin by thanking you for giving me this opportunity to provide an important update on the release of the 2022 Census of Population and Housing results to this August House and the Nation at large.

2.0 BACKGROUND

Madam Speaker, the Census was conducted between 18th August, 2022 and 21st September, 2022, and it was the first to be fully digital, simply dubbed as the E-Census. This census is essential for updating Zambia’s demographic and socio-economic profile and is the foundation for our nation’s development planning.

Madam, about 47,000 field personnel, including enumerators and supervisors, were deployed to ensure comprehensive data collection. Importantly, every individual who was recruited and worked for the exercise has been remunerated through their respective Bank accounts. However, this was not without challenges as some reported to have not received their allowances. Resolving such cases required thorough verification processes to ensure right beneficiaries were paid. The final batch of disbursement to the verified cases was made in mid- February 2025.

Madam Speaker, may I also take this opportunity to inform the House that the total cost of conducting the 2022 Population and Housing Census was approximately K967 million. Funding was predominantly sourced from the Government, which contributed over 90% of the necessary resources.

Madam Speaker, the main objectives of the 2022 Census included providing accurate and reliable information on the size, composition and distribution of Zambia’s population at various administrative levels. This included gathering data on permanent residences, homeless households and institutional populations. Permanent residences refer to established dwellings where people live regularly, while homeless households consist of individuals without a fixed abode.

The institutional population includes those residing in facilities such as orphanages, correctional institutions and hospices.

Madam Speaker, the census aimed to collect detailed demographic and socio-economic information, create an accurate sampling frame for future surveys and generate important statistics for small areas and specific population groups. To ensure data accuracy, we provided training for census personnel, utilised advanced digital tools to minimize errors and conducted extensive validation processes.

We made every effort to ensure nearly everyone was counted in the census, to achieve universal coverage. To address any challenges, we implemented an extension period to include individuals who might have been overlooked in the final count. Although some individuals may not have been counted, significant efforts were made to reach out to and include all residents of Zambia during the census period.

Madam Speaker, allow me to share some of the key developments that have transpired since the conclusion of the census data collection.

3.0 KEY DEVELOPMENTS AFTER CENSUS DATA COLLECTION

Madam Speaker, the preliminary findings from the 2022 Census were released on 23rd December, 2022, offering an initial snapshot of our population disaggregated by male and female across various administrative levels, that is, National, Province, District, Constituency and Ward. On 4th April, 2023, we launched the Executive Monitor, a user-friendly digital platform for accessing preliminary data, available for download on the Google Play Store. These preliminary results, published within three months of the census undertaking, provided early insights into population counts and basic demographics, although they did not fully reconcile administrative boundaries.

The final census results broken down by national and provincial levels were published in the Population Summary Report, Volume Two, which was released electronically on 28th December, 2023.

Subsequently, a print copy of the report offering detailed data from the national to the ward level was publicly made available on 30th June, 2024. The printed report included comprehensive information from all households (including those in permanent residences and the homeless), institutional populations and incorporated
administrative boundary adjustments.

Additionally, a revised report to include information on special age categories such as those relevant to civic and electoral participation, was released on 25th February, 2025. This means that the Revised Population Summary Report, Volume Two, February 2025 will serve as the official reference for planning and decision- making, among other purposes.

4.0 KEY RESULTS FROM THE REVISED REPORT

Madam Speaker, I would like to share some key findings from the Revised Population Summary Report, Volume Two, February 2025.

Zambia has experienced remarkable population growth over the past decade, surging from 13.1 million in 2010 to 19.7 million in 2022.

This rapid increase presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in urbanisation, service delivery and infrastructure development. The results reveal significant growth trends across the provinces. Lusaka remains the most populous province, with its population increasing from 2,191,225 in 2010 to 3,093,617 in 2022, which represents a 41.2% rise. This reinforces Lusaka’s status as an urban hub that attracts economic migrants. The Copperbelt Province grew from 1,972,317 in 2010 to 2,768,192 in 2022, marking a 40.4% increase mainly driven by mining activities. In the moderate growth category, provinces such as Luapula, Western, and Muchinga experienced notable population increases of 53.2%, 52.3%, and 51.8%, respectively, between 2010 and 2022.

Madam Speaker, Central Province reported a notable growth of 73%, with its population expanding from 1,307,111 in 2010 to 2,261,336 in 2022.

Meanwhile, North Western Province stands out with the highest percentage change at 75.8%, growing from 727,044 in 2010 to 1,278,357 in 2022, possibly driven by resource development and economic opportunities that attract new residents. In contrast, Eastern and Northern Provinces show population increases of 45.2% and 46.8%, respectively, indicating a gradual but steady development trend.

Madam Speaker, one of the most notable developments in Zambia’s demographic landscape is the growth in the 19-34 years age group, which increased from 3,362,161 in 2010 to 5,145,361 in 2022. This rise means that the 19-34 age demographic now accounts for 26.1% of the total population, up from 25.6% in 2010. This upward trend among younger individuals highlights both the growing population and presents potential challenges and opportunities for economic development, education, and employment in the coming years.

At the same time, Zambia’s median age rose from 16.9 years in 2010 to 18.3 years in 2022, indicating a gradual shift towards an older yet pre-dominantly youthful population. Additionally, the age dependency ratio decreased from 92.5 to 81.2. This change suggests a growing workforce that could drive economic growth.

and development, provided it receives adequate support. The age dependency ratio measures the number of dependents—people younger than 15 and older than 64—in relation to the working-age population, which includes individuals aged 15 to 64.

Madam Speaker, the report also recorded about 47,941 individuals residing in institutional settings such as orphanages, correctional facilities, and hospices, with the majority located in Lusaka (10,961) and Copperbelt (8,179). Urban homelessness remains a significant concern, with 1,918 homeless individuals reported in Lusaka and 1,427 on the Copperbelt, contrasting sharply with the relatively lower figures in rural areas.

Madam Speaker, household structures are evolving, with the total number of households increasing from 2.5million in 2010 to 4.1 million in 2022. Alongside this rise, the average household size has declined from 5.2 persons per household in 2010 to 4.8 in 2022 at the national level. The average household size in urban areas decreased from 5.1 in 2010 to 4.6 in 2022, reflecting a more significant shift. Conversely, in rural areas, household size decreased from 5.3 in 2010 to 5.0 in 2022, indicating a gradual trend toward smaller family units.

Madam Speaker, these declines suggest changing social structures, such as smaller family units, increased urbanization, and evolving economic conditions that promote different living arrangements. This trend may also indicate a growing number of individuals living alone or in smaller households, potentially due to migration to urban.

areas for employment opportunities or socio-economic changes. These demographic transformations carry profound policy implications, but my government is proactively responding to these demographic trends, paving the way for an inclusive and resilient future for all its citizens.

Madam Speaker, as I conclude, I want to highlight the significance of the upcoming census publications, which will complement the Revised Population Summary Report. These publications will provide essential data that will deepen our understanding of the country’s demographic and socio-economic landscape. Additionally, it is important to note that these reports are public resources; they will be available free of charge to promote transparency and accessibility for researchers, policymakers, and the general public.

In continuing with the release of planned reports from the 2022 Census, all the remaining reports are expected to be released in the coming months up to August, 2025. The following are the expected reports:

  • Population Projections Report and National Analytical Report – these will provide insights into future demographic trends and broader socio-economic issues.
  • United Nations (UN) Type Descriptive Tables – these will provide basic descriptive statistics on various topics covering social-economic characteristics of population.

  • Provincial Analytical Reports (10) and Housing and Households Conditions Report – these will analyse regional demographic trends and housing conditions.
  • Child Marriage Report – this report will include important data on the prevalence of child marriage in Zambia.
  • Activity Limitation (Disability Report) – this report will provide insights into the prevalence and nature of disabilities among the population.

Madam Speaker, these upcoming reports are vital for informing policy decisions and socio-economic planning, guiding academic research and raising awareness of our demographic challenges and opportunities. Each publication will significantly contribute to shaping policies to enhance our citizens’ well-being. I assure the House that the Government is committed to effectively disseminating Census results and applying them to drive Zambia’s socio-economic development. I urge all stakeholders (government ministries, research institutions and development partners)to leverage these findings in their planning and policy efforts.

5.0 CONCLUSION

Madam Speaker, let me end by expressing my deep appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Zambia for its unwavering financial and logistical support, which extended from the highest levels of governance down to the sub-national structures, sincere gratitude also goes to the cooperating partners for the invaluable support received, including the private sector.

Finally, I sincerely thank the people of Zambia for their cooperation in providing essential information to the census officers at all levels. Your contributions were crucial in collecting, processing and compiling this valuable data, and we are truly grateful for your participation.

Madam Speaker, I thank you.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LEADERSHIP BASED ON INTEGRITY – PF MP MUNG’ANDU

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LEADERSHIP BASED ON INTEGRITY – MUNG’ANDU

March 4, 2025

LUSAKA – Chama South Member of Parliament Davis Mung’andu has praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his commitment to making decisions that benefit the Zambian people, describing him as a leader of integrity and honesty.

Speaking on 5FM, Mr. Mung’andu noted that many Zambians have been misled by long-standing misconceptions about President Hichilema, largely inherited from opposition narratives. He urged citizens to critically assess leadership based on actions rather than misinformation.

“We were told a lot of lies about the President whilst we were in opposition, and those lies have been indoctrinated. However, I came to realize that we should not inherit other people’s enemies,” Mr. Mung’andu said.

He stated that contrary to claims that President Hichilema would use his position for personal gain, his tenure has proven otherwise.

“They told us he was an evil, wicked man who would enrich himself when he became President, but the moment he got into power, we saw the opposite. He is a man you can trust. What he says is what happens,” he added.

Mr. Mung’andu highlighted the substantial increase in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as a testament to President Hichilema’s credibility.

“When he said he would increase CDF, I did not believe it because, as the Patriotic Front (PF), we struggled to distribute even K1 million. But he released K24 million, later increased it to K28 million, and now it stands at K36 million,” he said.

Mr. Mung’andu, who has an economics background, admitted that he initially doubted how the government would fund the increased CDF but later understood that the funds came from savings previously misused by past leaders.

“I wondered where he would get the money for CDF, and I realized that it is the money our former colleagues were using to fly around and party,” he stated.

He further commended President Hichilema’s handling of the drought situation, noting that no one had died of hunger despite the challenges. He highlighted the implementation of social safety nets such as the Social Cash Transfer and the Cash for Work program, which have helped cushion vulnerable households.

Mr. Mung’andu also lauded the President’s success in managing Zambia’s debt crisis, emphasizing that the burden inherited from the previous administration would have taken decades to clear.

“The debt we left as PF would have taken 80 years to pay off, but President Hichilema has restructured and worked around it,” he said.

Mr. Mung’andu’s remarks add to the growing acknowledgment of President Hichilema’s governance approach, which prioritizes fiscal discipline, social welfare, and economic growth.

“Mene, Mene, tekel, Upharsin”, the handwriting is on the Wall- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

“Mene, Mene, tekel, Upharsin”, the handwriting is on the Wall

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

…the hand-writing is on the wall, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end. You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.Upharsin: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians…

As I see the corruption upscaled, the suffering of Zambians get worse, the ruthlesness and autocratic rule take reign and dictatorial tendencies prevail, the petty politics, the political tensions and tribal divisions threatening the fabric of our society, I’m drawn to the story of Daniel and King Belshazzar.

In the book of Daniel (5) tells the story of the Babylonian ruler Belshazzar, a rich and debauched king, who gave a banquet to his court.

During the drunken party, the sacred vessels from the Jewish temple, stolen by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC, were used in a blasphemous manner.

At the height of the festivities, a man’s hand was seen writing on the wall with the mysterious words apoearing; “mene mene tekel upharsin” (verse 25).

The King was terrified. But no one could understand what the words meant. All attempts at interpretation by Belshazzar’s wise men failed until the prophet Daniel was called in.

Daniel was one of the captives from Judah brought earlier to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar.

Daniel was given wisdom from God to read and translate the words, which meant “numbered, numbered, weighed, divided.”

Daniel told the king, “Here is what these words mean”:

1. Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end.

2. Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.

3. Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians” (Daniel 5:26–28).

The future of Zambia is collectively in our hands. We can build and make Zambia a prosperous, secure, peaceful nation, or sadly, because of the selfish and treacherous path we are on, we can break it!

The choice is entirely ours as a people.

M’MEMBE PREDICTS A HEAVY ELECTORAL DEFEAT FOR THE UPND IN 2026

…as he warns against erosion of democracy in Zambia

Lusaka… Tuesday March 4, 2025

Socialist Party (SP) President Dr Fred M’membe has raised concerns over what he describes as the weakening of Zambia’s democratic institutions under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

In a statement titled “Kuya Bebele: With or Without Imingalato,” Dr M’membe warned that democratic values, constitutionalism, and the rule of law were under threat.

He argued that historically, authoritarian regimes have used elections as a tool to legitimize their rule while manipulating state institutions to retain power.

He disclosed that similar patterns were emerging in Zambia, where institutions such as the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and the legislature were being turned into pro-government entities.

Dr M’membe stated that since the UPND assumed office, governance standards had declined, leading to weakened state institutions and a disregard for constitutional principles.

“From the time Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND came to power, the emerging pattern is one in which the separation of powers, constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law are increasingly weakening, are being eroded. We say this because for the first time in our country’s history, we have seen very poor governance, which is characterised by extremely weak or destroyed state institutions, general disregard for the rule of law and lack of constitutionalism. It is no longer a secret that all state institutions in Zambia today are captured by the executive and are being manipulated to fraudulently aid Mr Hichilema and the UPND’s retention of power in 2026,” Dr M’membe stated.

“They have realised that a heavy electoral defeat in 2026 awaits them. It is common knowledge that Mr Hichilema and UPND administration’s public ratings are currently at an all-time low. Also, Mr Hichilema knows that there is a growing and irreversible narrative that he is a highly corrupt leader, running a looting machine. The corruption tag has befittingly and magnificently been conferred on him.”

He accused the government of using state power to suppress opposition voices and curtail fundamental freedoms, leading to increased polarization and political tensions.

The Socialist Party leader also questioned the integrity of the recent national census, citing the absence of key demographic data that had previously been included in past reports.

He suggested that this omission could be part of a larger scheme to manipulate electoral processes ahead of the 2026 elections.

Furthermore, Dr M’membe stated that President Hichilema’s administration was resorting to aggressive propaganda to counter growing public discontent.

He claimed that the government was attempting to discredit opposition leaders while struggling to maintain its credibility due to widespread perceptions of corruption.

Emphasizing the importance of democratic transitions, Dr M’membe cautioned that any attempts to undermine the electoral process would only lead to a loss of public trust.

He called on President Hichilema to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a fair and transparent election in 2026, reminding him that Zambia’s political stability depends on respecting the will of the people.

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

From day one, President Hakainde Hichilema had Brenthurst Foundation located at the heart of power, at State House to guide and advise him.

Things started going bad quickly.

He hired the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and located it at both State House and Ministry of Finance.

Nothing worked, nothing changed.

President Hichilema resorted to repressive methods. He used the police to frequently initimidate, harrass, arrest and punish critics and members of the Opposition.

Nothing worked, things got worse.

President Hichilema reprised archaic and repressive laws such as the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, Sedition, Criminal Defamation.

Nothing worked, his image continued to lay in tatters.

President Hichilema recently quietly appointed Whitney Mulobela, as State House Special Communications Strategist, to help the failings of the Clayson Hamasaka team with strategy.

Mulobela a veteran, astute journalist and junior lawyer was seen engaging and cultivating stake holders in the media.

Nothing worked, nothing changed.

They brought Kenyan PR experts. Government hired the Gina Din Corporate Communications (GDCC), a professional communications consulting firm. Set up by Gina Din Kariuki in October 1997, the company is recognised as the leading integrated public relations firm in the East African region.

Gina Din-Kariuki travelled to Zambia and conducted PR master classes for President Hichilema, State House, Ministers and Permanent Secretaries.

Nothing worked, nothing changed.

Government recently appointed Principal Public Relations Officers in all the 25 Ministries and 10 Provincial Administration.

The new officers were given elevated rank.

Strangely these institutions already had new Public Relations Officers! Quite a duplication.

However, bothing is working, nothing  changed.

Desperate neasures calls for desperate avtion. They recently hired Prophet Seer 1 and put him on a dedicated stipend to counter negative narrative on social-media.

Failed project.

Nothing worked, nothing changed.

Now they have appointed Mark Simuuwe, Situla Sikwiindi and Oliver Shalala giving them media roles.

Minister of Information and Media, who is also UPND Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa has appointed Mark Simuuwe as UPND Media Director replacing Ruth Dante( I hope they have finally rewarded her with a job).

At my last appearance on Prime Tv with Mark Simuuwe, I told him that his Masters must give him a substantial position as his position of a “consultant” was ridiculous.

No Consultant speaks for the organisation that they are consulting for. The position of a consultant is that of an outsider looking in.

Therefore Simuuwe couldn’t be an authority or taken seriously on topical issues he took as he trekked from one radio/tv station to another in his media campaigns to defend the failures of UPND Government.

Mweetwa has also appointed long-time party activist Sikwindi Situla as Deputy Media Director while media blogger, Oliver Shalala, has been appointed as a UPND Consultant taking up the ineffective role previously occupied by Simuuwe.

Shalala is recently remembered for his highly publicised work to get or speak for a contract for the lucrative Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway for Italian-Zambian businessman, Diego Cassili’s Graduare Property Development Limited and Velos Construction.

Cassili lost that fight to a chinese consortium led by Avic construction.

Shalala was later seen as PR officer battling the high stake game of Mwembeshi Resources, a new mine given a licence to dig and operate a copper mine in the delicate Lower Zambezi National Park.

In August 2023, the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) cancelled the decision to allow Mwembeshi Resources Limited operate a large-scale open pit copper mining project in Lower Zambezi National Park.

Clearly, the UPND Media remains in “comatose” using the words of Laura Miti, the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema beloved social-media defender.

Laura put squarely the blame on President Hichilema for failing to put up a solid and effective media team.

She recently wrote;

“If the President resolutely refuses to put together a PR team, that can easily show the stories that Emmanuel Mwamba expertly (grant that to him) puts together, to be mostly lies or spin, then he cannot be excused for unpresidentially doing what should be left to his communication team.”

“The whole government being defeated in the PR game because the Kateks refuses to do the right, if difficult, thing. Refuses to reassign, not even fire, those who have failed in a fundamental task.”

“The problem is not social media, Sir! It’s your
comatose communication function”.

CONCLUSION

The fastest way for President Hichilema to regain or rescue his tattered public image is to deliver on his own campaign promises, attend to the cost-of-living crisis, stop tribal appointments, stop corruption, stop persecuting political opponents, stop violating human rights and respect the Constitution, respect the seperation of powers and honour the independence of democratic institutions.

There is no PR than the PR narrative soeaking to delivery.

MILES SAMPA MISSES THE LOGIC ON GROWTH OF VOTER NUMBERS IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE

MILES SAMPA MISSES THE LOGIC ON GROWTH OF VOTER NUMBERS IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE
By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

Mile Miles Sampa posted on Facebook shortly: “ZAMSTATS showing top Population ⬆️ in Lusaka, CB, Eastern & Southern provinces in order. Then ECZ  Voters data has defied logic showing reverse order of 80,000⬆️ in Southern to 18,000⬇️ in Lusaka from 2021 figures. People Delelarism ⬆️ 🤔”

It’s very simple logic Mr Miles Sampa. Have you forgotten that during PF times, Southern Province was denied a chance to register for NRCs when kids were being given NRCs in Eastern Province and in Luapula?

Have you forgotten that Southern Province was also not given that chance for continous voter registration like the other provinces? Remember that PF did registration in five provinces of Muchinga, Eastern, Northern, Luapula and anotherbone I can’t remember off cuff. When they switched to Western, Northwestern and Southern, the first five still continues to register. So the PF combed those provinces for all potential voters and you can’t expect many new voters there. What would have stopped them from registering before?

During that time, people of Southern Province had to move to other provinces to register and vote in the 2021 elections. People of Southern Province were just lucky that when they moved to other provinces to register, they were able to choose polling stations in their localities of Southern Province.

So now, when voter registration is free without any manipulation and tricks, which province do you think will have the highest number of new voters?

Further, to understand voter registration, factor in things like religious beliefs. Some provinces have such churches like Jehovah’s Witnesses whose members don’t vote. This doesn’t affect Southern.

Dry around Southern and you will not find empty bushes like in the north. The province is full of people and it’s population is increasing suchs to economic activity at household level, belief in cultural practices like polygamy and having values such as having more children per nuclear family.

What you should be telling us is whether the ratio of the total number of voters over the population of Southern Province is higher that other provinces. The truth is that is is still lower than many provinces because more of it’s people are still no registered. In fact the UPND should push her to get more voters registered from among their members in Southern Province.

KUYA BEBELE: WITH OR WITHOUT IMINGALATO-Fred M’membe

KUYA BEBELE: WITH OR WITHOUT IMINGALATO

It is established that tyrants, despotic, crooked, or corrupt leaders hold elections, too. Except these elections are designed in a manner that is advantageous and beneficial to their continued stay in power. They know that transparent elections make it extremely difficult for them to win. They also fully recognise that honest, fair, free, and peaceful elections have the potential to end their rule, their hold on power.

So, to achieve their objectives, they openly engage in massive electoral fraud, where they abuse and manipulate state institutions such as the legislature, judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and many others, by turning them into pro-regime institutions. Under these circumstances, constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law are literally put off, as power becomes concentrated in the executive, and the talk about democracy becomes nothing but empty rhetoric.

From the time Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND came to power, the emerging pattern is one in which the separation of powers, constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law are increasingly weakening, are being eroded. We say this because for the first time in our country’s history, we have seen very poor governance, which is characterised by extremely weak or destroyed state institutions, general disregard for the rule of law and lack of constitutionalism. It is no longer a secret that all state institutions in Zambia today are captured by the executive and are being manipulated to fraudulently aid Mr Hichilema and the UPND’s retention of power in 2026.

Mr Hichilema and the UPND’s desperation, agitation, or uneasiness is visible for all to see and conclude that this is indeed an outgoing regime. They have realised that a heavy electoral defeat in 2026 awaits them. It is common knowledge that Mr Hichilema and UPND administration’s public ratings are currently at an all-time low. Also, Mr Hichilema knows that there is a growing and irreversible narrative that he is a highly corrupt leader, running a looting machine. The corruption tag has befittingly and magnificently been conferred on him.

The tormenting of opposition leaders and condensing of the freedoms of citizens, polarisation and bitter tribal divisions in the country, and how the same keeps deepening, is part of the many reasons why it is highly improbable for Mr Hichilema to be re-elected in 2026. That is why Mr Hichilema through his abusive and divisive State House based rogue media, and other hired voices are unrelentingly berating, abusing, and describing selected opposition leaders in this country, in such a resentful manner. Their aim is to alter the narrative and heighten propaganda activities to support his re-election bid, but it’s too late. This regime lacks integrity, credibility, and acceptability amongst the people.

This is the root cause of all the imingalato and other desperate manoeuvres and schemes we are witnessing. For instance, it is the first time in Zambian history that government leaders are discrediting a census report conducted by the same administration. Again, for the first time, we have noted the glaring absence of critical information in the form of the widely used languages and the ethnic composition of the Zambian society. Previous census reports, including the most recent one in 2010, contain this data. But what has happened this time around? What has changed?

Nonetheless, we would like to caution Mr Hichilema and his minions that there is a limit to how far they can go with imingalato. They also need to realise that there is a fundamental connection between manipulations or imingalato and the erosion of the people’s trust and confidence in the democratic process and norms. History has shown that leaders that exploit constitutional weaknesses and misuse the law to sustain their hold on power, gravely undermine the base of constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law, thereby, leaving their people saddened and disappointed.

Mr Hichilema must know that in ideal democracies, political power is exchanged peacefully through credible elections, which fosters stability and a sense of fairness among all political players. This is what Zambia is known for, and this is the exact process that made him who he is today. Let him know that respect for the Constitution, democracy and the rule of law is sacrosanct. Forcing matters so desperately in the manner they are attempting to do is shattering consensus and creating political polarisation, discord, and tensions.

KALABA RED FLAGS CONGO D£ATHS

…as d£ath toll rises close to 10,000 according to official reports

04.03.25

Citizens First President Harry Kabala is concerned at the fact that the number of d£aths of innocent people and combatants keeps increasing in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kalaba has since reiterated his calls for SADC, the UN and other regional leaders to step up efforts to curb the conflict that has already sucked in some neighbouring countries unwittingly.

“In the age of diplomacy we shouldn’t have thousands of people dying daily when the Congo conflict that has been raging for decades can be slowed down or even ended with concerted efforts from regional leaders including the leadership of Zambia which shares a large border with Congo,” said Kalaba.

Trade volumes between Zambia and Congo are bound to reduce drastically as the conflict between the government’s forces of President Felix Tshisekedi and the Rwanda backed M23 rebels continue to battle said Kalaba.

“Official reports places the number of d£ad people at about 8,500 people since the conflict flared up in January,” said Kalaba, “that means almost 300 people die monthly in Congo including women and children which I think is criminal.”

At the centre of the conflict concentrated around eastern Congo on the border with Rwanda is the desire for the control of the rich mineral resource of the country, although the M23 rebels state that they are seeking to protect the minority Tutsi’s in that area that are also found in Rwanda where President Paul Kagame himself is Tutsi.

Uganda and Burundi are already on the fringes of the conflict with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni already having deployed huge swath of soldiers on the borders with Congo while South Africa has already lost 15 peace keeping soldiers on the battle front.

“Zambia shares a border stretching over 1,900kms with Congo so we must take a special interest in working together with regional bodies to end this long worn conflict, save lives and enhance trade,”  said Kalaba.

In the past, Zambia has been home to thousands of Congolese refugees displaced during the w@r though some have either returned home or sought refuge in other neighbouring countries.

Congo the richest country in Africa in terms of minerals has not known peace for decades and has also been a typical target of military c0ups.

Kalaba, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs said the Congolese people are fatigued and traumatised with the wars and deserve peace at this point with the help of countries like Zambia through regional bodies such as SADC.

You Cannot Sue Embassy – Court

You Cannot Sue Embassy – Court
By Dickson Jere

A Zambian man was employed as local staff at the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Consulate in Zambia as a Clerk. He served between 2002 to 2010 before he passed on. At the time of his death, he was owed about USD28,000.00 in unpaid terminal benefits, which the embassy failed to settle to his estate.

After failing to get the benefits, the Administrator of the Estate sued the DRC Consulate General (on behalf of the Consulate) in the Ndola High Court, claiming for the payment of the terminal benefits with interest.

Even though the Consulate was served Court process, it did not enter appearance nor file documents in defence of the claim. It simply, ignored the case.

However, when the matter came up before the High Court Judge, he had to ask himself whether he had powers to hear the case involving a diplomatic Consulate in Zambia.

“The question prompted by the pleadings is whether this Court has jurisdiction to hear and determine an action against the Consulate or like offices,” the Judge noted.

He then opined that the Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act, Chapter 20 of the Laws of Zambia, gives immunity to a Consulate and persons connected to it from legal suits in respect of things done or omitted to be done in the course of their official duties.

“The issue of payment of employment benefits squarely falls within the official duties of the Defendant and it is caught up by the said Act,” the Judge ruled.

“The Consulate and its officers are insulated from legal process such as the present action,” the Court added.

He said this immunity extends to the enforcement of Court Judgments against the foreign missions in Zambia.

“Aptly put, a Consulate just like an Embassy or High Commission office is a state within a state,” the Judge said and dismissed the case on the ground that it does not have the power to hear it.

“I, therefore, dismiss this matter for want of jurisdiction on the part of Court,” he added.

WILL REUBEN KAMANGA BETRAY ANDREW KAMANGA’S VISION?

WILL REUBEN KAMANGA BETRAY ANDREW KAMANGA’S VISION?

By Darious Kapembwa

SO the National Sports of Zambia boss Sombwa Musunsa announced last week that FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga will be in-charge of the business until elections are held on March 29.

Musunsa says Andrew Kamanga’s tenure ended on February 28 and anything that is done beyond that date is null and void.
How this has become an issue today after being dealt with last December is worrying but not surprising. It is not difficult for any right-thinking person who has followed developments leading up to this decision to guess what this is about.

In the first place, the FAZ electoral roadmap was highly publicized leading up to FIFA approving it. Basically, FIFA okayed the process because they know that no rules were being broken.

The NSCZ was availed with this roadmap somewhere in December and they saw no need to raise alarm then.

But hey! This is easy to process by everyone who has been following these events, from Kamanga being arrested by the drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) back last year, to the DEC unjustifiably ceasing his passport, to summoning Brian Msidi…to every shenanigan that we have witnessed and still continue witnessing ahead of this election.

No doubt the idea in this particular case seems like it’s to stop Andrew Kamanga from opening provincial conferences in his capacity as FAZ president. The provincial elections take centre-stage starting next week.

Musunsa authored a very enticing piece, very good to the ears of those that innocently don’t understand the agenda and indeed those behind it, where it stated “FAZ admitted to making errors” in their letter to him but he did not highlight those errors.

BUT WHAT IS SHOCKING IS THE SILENCE OF THE AUTHOR OF THE PURPORTED ADMISSION OF ERRORS IN THE FAZ LETTER, REUBEN KAMANGA.
As head of the FAZ secretariat, Kamanga needed to challenge those allegations, it doesn’t sit well to refute such allegations in silence. If the FAZ letter that is supposedly signed by him as CEO didn’t admit to any wrong doing as Musunsa puts it, why is it difficult to say “no bwana you are lying, we didn’t admit to any wrongdoing, in fact we sent you the FIFA and stakeholders approved roadmap back last year.”
And if there are errors that he admitted to in that letter to Musunsa’s NSCZ, let him say so just so that we stop speculating.
Reuben has nothing to fear here, because he was employed by the FAZ constitution, he was not employed by NSCZ and therefore he cannot be fired by them (NSCZ).

In fact, the moment NSCZ announced that Reuben will assume Andrew Kamanga’s role until elections, he should have declined that and threw it back to Musunsa.

Let him leave NSCZ to conduct provincial elections themselves because if he goes ahead to see off provincial elections whose AGMs are supposed to be opened by the FA president, he would be legitimising a third-party coup at Football House.
Reuben should decline that proposal if he is loyal to his employers and believes in the rule of law and not that of men.
He should leave the process to those that have the appetite to hijack it to do so, just so, to let the world of football see that in Zambia FAZ elections were being conducted by those who had no right to do so.

He should act like his predecessor Adrian Kashala who overcame similar offers and enticements, some of them actually bigger than what we are witnessing today.
He fought them like a warrior in defense of his territory. He was ahead of their manoeuvre, he read their every move.

They got frustrated and fired him from his police job out of frustration when he turned down an ill-fated transfer meant to take him away from Football House so that they could have a field day.

He defended the constitution and processes, they enticed him with nice promises just like they are doing to Reuben today, but he read the danger and chose to bite the bullet.

Who doesn’t remember Kashala’s final presser in Livingstone on the eve of the 2021 elections, when again the government then attempted to stop the elections having failed in all their usual overtures of police, DEC, ACC, State House etc like we are seeing today.

He (Kashala) directly addressed the then head of state remarking: “We are tired of being treated like second-class citizens. We all have rights in this country and these elections are going ahead whether one likes it or not, we are tired of being…”
Clearly Reuben’s silence on this score is quite deafening. He must do the right things, things that late George Kasengele did for Kalusha and the institution of FAZ when RB and sons wanted a hostile takeover, things that Kashala did to repel the PF’s planned hostile takeover. Things that uncle Fidelis Banda did during the Teddy Mulonga error.

All of them did one thing in common, defending the institution of FAZ and its rules and procedures with everything in their blood. But if Reuben accepts to proceed as Musunsa wishes, it would be betrayal of his own work, he would be legitimising third-party interference in a very clear and smooth process that is supposed to be independent.

To the councilors, don’t lose sight of the fact that every time we have such acrimony towards FAZ elections, then some outsider with delegated authority has their candidate, and they are always exposed, and such candidates have always lost anyway.

If a candidate is shoved down your throats by hook or crook, they will not be unanswerable to you, they’ll be answerable to those that installed them on the throne.

Be wise, don’t be fooled, stand and speak football language, like you have always done. Individuals should not be the campaign message; football must be the message. What’s wrong in allowing the process to run its course? Why should people be changing goal posts and rules in the middle of the game?

This pattern is now nauseating… Football elections shouldn’t be this ugly and why targeting one person? What kind of hatred is this?

Otherwise Reuben should reject that carrot being dangled, it’s a death trap.
We are watching closely until full time.

70% of Zambian youths smoke before age 13 – Tobacco Control advocates

70% of Zambian youths smoke before age 13 – Tobacco Control advocates

NEARLY 70 percent of Zambia’s young population pick up smoking before they even reach their teenage years, Tobacco Control Zambia has revealed as it rallies behind the proposed Tobacco Control Bill, 2025.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BKEsfEwKs/?mibextid=oFDknk

Citing the 2021 Global Youth Tobacco Survey, the association warned that tobacco addiction in Zambia is reaching alarming levels with 40 percent of children as young as seven years old having already started smoking.

“Tobacco is not just a public health crisis, it’s an economic disaster. Over 7,000 Zambians die each year from tobacco related illnesses, while the country loses K2.8 billion annually in healthcare costs and reduced productivity. And yet, the industry tells us it is ‘good for the economy,” lamented the advocates.

The Tobacco Control Bill, 2025, backed by the Ministries of Health and Justice aims to regulate tobacco advertising, impose stricter marketing controls and curb the sale of tobacco products near schools and playgrounds.

“This is not about banning tobacco farming or trade. It’s about protecting public health from an industry that preys on young people,” said Tobacco Control Zambia representative Isaac Mwaipopo.

The proposed law aligns Zambia with global anti tobacco efforts, particularly the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) which the country ratified in 2008.

Tobacco Control Zambia accused the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) of spreading false claims that the bill would destroy jobs and increase illicit trade.

“The reality is, strong tobacco regulations actually reduce illicit trade,” they said, citing Kenya’s success in cutting illegal tobacco sales from 15 percent in 2003 to just 5 percent in 2016 after implementing strict laws.

They also pointed to the Big Tobacco Tiny Targets Zambia 2024 survey which found that 99 percent of shops selling cigarettes were located within 100 meters of a school or playground, making it easy for children to access tobacco.

With the bill set to be debated in Parliament, the advocates urged lawmakers to stand firm against tobacco industry pressure.

“Your duty is to the Zambian people not to the tobacco industry. Every year we delay, thousands more lives are lost.”

Zambia remains one of only five African countries yet to enact a comprehensive Tobacco Control Law despite many of its neighbours including Malawi, which depends on tobacco for 65 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) having already done so.

The advocates further expressed confidence in President Hakainde Hichilema who has never smoked nor consumed alcohol in his entire life to prioritise public health over corporate interests.

CHIRUNDU TRANSIT ROUTE BECOMING TOO DANGEROUS – MWENYA

New Era Democratic Party (NEDP) President Exildah Mwenya has expressed concern at the increasing insecurity for truck drivers operating on the Lusaka-Chirundu route.

Ms Mwenya explained in an interview, that it was worrying to note how criminals had found it easy to rob truck drivers operating using this route with impunity as though police did not exist in Zambia for them to be committing such heneous and gruesome criminalities.

“It makes sad reading to wake up to a screaming headline in the daily newspapers and online media of a truck driver who is regrettably of Zambian origin, being robbed while transporting goods through this transit point to South Africa Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries for onward transportation to other continents. This is also a wake up call to the Zambia Police that their main occupation should not just be arresting politicians but also offer the much needed security to drivers on this route and because every Zambian deserves the protection of his or her security wings,” she noted.

She revealed that it was disheartening that late last week another Zambian truck driver was robbed off the cobalt load he was carrying and other valuables by criminals in transit to Botswana before they tied him up after brutally beating him.

She reminded government that there was need to work hand In hand with other governments in the region especially the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zimbabwe Governments to formulate ways of improving the security among the driving community because the consequences of any truck driver protest would even cripple further the country’s ailing economy and that of it’s two neighbours.

The NEDP leader has since called on government to protect the lives of the truckers by providing enough security the Chirundu route and other trouble spots so that lives of this important group of individuals could be protected as they carried out their duty.

BLATTER, PLATINI BACK IN COURT IN SWISS FIFA FRAUD CASE

BLATTER, PLATINI BACK IN COURT IN SWISS FIFA FRAUD CASE

FORMER Fifa President Sepp Blatter and French football legend Michel Platini are back in court in Switzerland to face accusations of fraud.

In 2022, the pair were acquitted in a trial over a payment of 2m Swiss francs (£1.6m) made to Platini and authorised by Blatter in 2011. Both men denied wrongdoing and said the transfer was belated payment for Fifa advisory work by Platini, who formerly led European football’s governing body Uefa.

But the Swiss federal prosecutor appealed against the decision. The new trial is expected to last until Thursday, with a verdict due on 25 March. The pair appeared before an appeals court in Muttenz, near Basel, on Monday. Blatter, 88, reaffirmed that he was innocent.

“When you talk about falsehoods, lies and deception, that’s not me. That didn’t exist in my whole life,” he told the court. A lawyer for Platini, 69, said the lower court that acquitted the pair in 2022 had been “right to find that the disputed payment of 2m francs was lawful”.

Platini had an illustrious playing career and is a three-time winner of the Ballon d’Or – Europe’s highest individual football award. He captained France to victory at the 1984 European Championship and won the 1985 European Cup with Juventus. He went on to coach the French national team and became Uefa president in 2007.

In 2015, prosecutors accused the pair of deceiving Fifa about payments made to Platini.

In his testimony at the first trial, Blatter said that he had asked Platini to work as his adviser in 1998. He added that at the time, Fifa could not afford the 1m Swiss francs annual fee requested by Platini. They instead settled on partial payment, with the outstanding balance to be paid at a later date. Platini said during the trial: “I trusted the president, and knew he would pay me one day.”

He stopped working for Fifa in 2002 but initially did not pursue the payment as he told the court he had not needed the money at the time, and – according to Blatter – Fifa was “broke”. In January 2011, however, Platini felt he was in a position to send an invoice and the money was paid after approval by Blatter.

Following an investigation launched in 2015, Swiss prosecutors accused Blatter and Platini of forgery and fraud. Also in 2015, Fifa suspended both men from football for ethics breaches – originally for eight years, although their exclusions were later reduced.

In 2022, Switzerland’s federal criminal court in Bellinzona cleared the two after accepting their account of a “gentlemen’s agreement” for the payment. Swiss businessman and sports administrator Blatter joined Fifa in 1975, became general secretary in 1981 and then president of world football’s governing body in 1998.

He remained in the role for 17 years until resigning amid corruption investigations. Platini later withdrew his own candidacy for president.

Following the launch event last Tuesday, there has been a raging debate on the 2022 Census Revised Population Summary Report as a result of the comments made by the Chairperson of the Civil Service Commission Dr CHOOLWE BEYANI, during the question and answer session.

The Statistics Act No. 13 of 2018 and established channels of authority give ZamStats sufficient latitude to ensure that the requirements for integrity and adherence to international standards, are not compromised. As indicated, dissemination of the report was launched by the Minister of Finance and National Planning. Its contents remain valid. For the record, last weeks event follows the dissemination of the preliminary census results announced by the former Statistician General Mr. MULENGA J.J MUSEPA on Friday, 23rd December, 2022, at an event where Dr MUSOKOTWANE also delivered a keynote address.

No Director has been dismissed

The erroneous narrative in the public domain that three (3) Directors have been dismissed from the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) on tribal grounds is a source of great concern. In their statement last Thursday, ZamStats indicated that there is no record of any person at any level of its operations being dismissed on the basis of tribe or ethnicity. We reaffirm this position. Therefore, the assertion of separation from ZamStats on tribal grounds should be treated as false, unfounded and an attempt to discredit the competence and integrity of the national statistical system.

Those named in some quarters as having been dismissed, are:

1. Mr. Mulenga Musepa

Mr. MULENGA MUSEPA was seconded from the Bank of Zambia in October, 2019, when ZamStats was under the then Ministry of National Development Planning. During part of his tenure, the ZamStats Board of Directors was Chaired by Mr. CHARLES MPUNDU (May, 2021 and April, 2024). Mr. MUSEPA performed as Interim Statistician General from October, 2019, until his confirmation, in February, 2023. In his portfolio, he oversaw census preparatory activities and the 2022 National Census main data collection exercise. He also announced the preliminary census results on 23rd December, 2022. After being on hold, pending the extension of his contract, Mr. Musepa left ZamStats in April, 2024.

2. Ms. Chola Nakazwe

According to our records, Ms. NAKAZWE is a serving member of staff at ZamStats where she is the Chief Statistician. She has over 21 years of continuous public service and has never been dismissed from ZamStats or any other public institution. Ms. NAKAZWE was in the organizing team for the 2022 Census Revised Population Summary Report dissemination event, held at Mulungushi International Conference Center, last week on Tuesday. For a brief period between 22nd February to 19th April, 2024, Ms. NAKAZWE was appointed by the former ZamStats Board to act administratively as Statistician General. This was during the time when Mr. Musepa was on hold, pending the extension of his contract.

3. Mr. Goodson Sinyenga

On 25th April, 2024, Mr. GOODSON SINYENGA, the Director of Research, Planning and Information in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, was assigned by the Civil Service Commission to the Ministry of Finance and National Planning on attachment to perform the duties of Statistician General, for administrative convenience, only. The action by the Commission was made because a new ZamStats Board had not yet been constituted. Mr. SINYENGA was at ZamStats until October, 2024, when he reverted to his substantive position at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, as Director of Research, Planning and Information. Mr. SINYENGA previously served under ZamStats for many years.

Current Leadership of ZamStats

ZamStats is a corporate body established under the Statistics Act No. 13 of 2018. Part II section 8 (1) of the Act provides for the constitution of a Board of the Agency which consists of part-time members appointed by the Minister Responsible for Statistics, in the current case, it is the Minister of Finance and National Planning. The Act also provides functions of the Board which mainly are to provide strategic policy direction to ZamStats. Following the end of tenure of the previous Board in April, 2024, Cabinet at its meeting held on 28th October, 2024, endorsed the recommendation of the Minister of Finance and National Planning to appoint a nine (9) member Board of Directors for ZamStats. The Board is Chaired by Mr. OLIVER CHINGANYA.

On the management side, Mrs. SHEILA MUDENDA, Assistant Director – Information, Research and Dissemination, was appointed to serve as Acting Statistician General for administrative convenience, with effect from October, 2024. Mrs. MUDENDA has served at ZamStats for over thirty (30) years, from April, 1993, to date.

Conclusion

The Minister of Finance and National Planning is aware of the matters recently raised by interest groups at various fora over the last one week concerning the 2022 Census Revised Population Summary Report. He will soon submit a request to the Speaker of the National Assembly to address pertinent issues through a ministerial statement.

ZNBC: A National Broadcaster or a UPND Propaganda Machine?-!Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

ZNBC: A National Broadcaster or a UPND Propaganda Machine?

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

It is unfortunate and disturbing that the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), a national media institution funded by taxpayers, has on several occasions misled the public—all in an apparent bid to push the agenda of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND). Instead of being a neutral and credible source of news, ZNBC seems to have become an extension of the UPND propaganda machinery, raising serious concerns about media freedom, fairness, and accountability.

Misleading the Public: A Dangerous Trend

The role of a national broadcaster is to inform, educate, and serve the interests of all citizens, not to twist facts in favor of the government. Yet, we have seen multiple instances where ZNBC has not only exhibited bias but has also outright misled the public. Whether it is by misrepresenting economic realities, downplaying government failures, or painting a false picture of progress, the broadcaster has abandoned its duty to report the truth.

1. The Economy is “Recovering” – But for Whom?

ZNBC continuously reports that Zambia’s economy is on an upward trajectory under UPND leadership. However, they fail to highlight the rising cost of living that ordinary Zambians are experiencing. Mealie meal prices have skyrocketed, fuel prices continue to increase, and the Kwacha is depreciating at an alarming rate. Instead of addressing these realities, ZNBC broadcasts reports that paint a false picture of economic stability.

2. Selective Reporting on Corruption

ZNBC frequently covers corruption cases involving members of the previous Patriotic Front (PF) government while completely ignoring scandals involving UPND officials. For instance, allegations of corruption within the fertilizer procurement deals under UPND have been quietly swept under the rug, while the broadcaster dedicates hours of airtime to past corruption cases involving PF. This selective reporting raises concerns about whether ZNBC is truly committed to exposing corruption or simply acting as a tool for the ruling party’s political vendetta.

3. The Censorship of Opposition Voices

ZNBC has systematically sidelined opposition political parties by refusing to air their press briefings and statements. On the rare occasion that opposition leaders are featured, the coverage is either negative or downplayed. Meanwhile, UPND leaders are given endless coverage, even on trivial matters.

But It Was the Same Under PF – Really?

Some will argue that ZNBC was also biased under the previous Patriotic Front (PF) government. While it is true that opposition parties did not receive equal coverage back then, let us look at things objectively: What was wrong then cannot suddenly be right now.

The key difference is this: Under the PF government, the issue was primarily about opposition parties not getting airtime. However, there was no systematic effort to mislead the public or fabricate information. Today, the problem is not just about bias; it is about feeding the nation falsehoods and manipulating facts to suit a political agenda.

We cannot accept a situation where a national broadcaster abandons truth and professionalism simply because it serves the interests of those in power. If we are to compare the past and the present, things are actually getting worse because now, it is not just about bias; it is about deception.

A Call for Media Reform

ZNBC is not the property of any political party; it belongs to the people of Zambia. The UPND government , who once cried foul over ZNBC’s partiality, should not be the same ones abusing it now. If there is any sincerity in their calls for democracy, transparency, and good governance, they must ensure that ZNBC is depoliticized and operates independently.

If we allow this trend to continue, ZNBC will lose all credibility, and Zambians will be left with nothing but government-sponsored propaganda disguised as news. We must demand better because a free and truthful media is essential for democracy.

Conclusion

The question remains: Is ZNBC still a national broadcaster, or has it become an extension of the UPND party? From the way things are going, it is becoming clear that the institution is no longer serving the people; it is serving the ruling party. And that is unacceptable.

Zambians deserve truth, not government spin. We must hold ZNBC accountable before the situation worsens beyond repair.

It’s not about who sits in a chair, but who bears the weight of that seat- Ephraim Shakafuswa tells HH

Dear Mr. President

While you sit in the comfort of power, confidently claiming that you’ve “put glue” in the chair, let’s remind you of a simple and undeniable truth: It is the people who are the real glue that holds this nation together, not you, nor any other leader. History has shown us, time and again, that the true strength of a nation lies not in the hands of its rulers, but in the resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of its people.

You may choose to dismiss this by claiming you’ve “sat on the chair with both your buttocks and put glue there,” but let’s not forget the words of those who sought to break the spirit of the African people. Ian Smith, the white minority ruler of Rhodesia, once arrogantly declared, “Never, never, never in a thousand years shall a black man rule this country.” But history is a relentless force—Smith’s regime collapsed, and the people triumphed, proving that the will of the people is far stronger than any oppressive regime.

Even in apartheid South Africa, Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of segregation, dismissed the idea of black South Africans governing, declaring that they were “not ready.” Yet, despite his attempts to suppress them, the people rose, and apartheid fell. It was the people who drove that change.

Now, President Hichilema, let me be clear: It’s not about who sits in a chair, but who bears the weight of that seat. Look beyond your office, visit the compounds, the bus stations, and the streets where the real Zambian people struggle every day. Those are the ones who hold this country together, not the individuals in power.

You speak of economic austerity, telling people to consume less than they produce, but have you truly walked in their shoes? How can people reduce consumption when they have so little to begin with? Your rhetoric may sound good in speeches, but it misses the harsh reality of life for many Zambians, who are just trying to survive.

Don’t take the silence of Zambians for granted. Our history is filled with leaders who lost touch with the people, and we all know what happened to them. Where are they now? You might be in power today, but those who lost sight of the people’s struggles and the pulse of the nation are no longer remembered fondly. The people’s patience is not to be mistaken for weakness or approval. Silence does not mean agreement.

President Hichilema, understand this: The glue is the people. Always has been, always will be. Without them, no government, no leader, and no policy will stand the test of time. Your time in power is temporary, but the resilience of the people, their fight for justice, and their drive to survive will outlast any regime. Don’t forget that the people are watching, and they are the ones who ultimately shape the future of this nation.

So let this be a reminder: The glue is the people, and it always will be

Yours truly,

Ephraim Shakafuswa

Geza to give guidance on anti-Mnangagwa protests

A group of war veterans calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation has vowed to press ahead with mass protests to force him out, despite a growing crackdown by security forces.

The group, led by Zanu-PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza, has gone into hiding after police declared him a wanted man for allegedly undermining the authority of the president and inciting public violence.

In a video released on Sunday night, the group’s spokesperson, Knox Chivero, claimed Mnangagwa had deployed hit squads with orders to assassinate them. Speaking from an undisclosed location, Chivero assured their supporters that plans for a national shutdown were still on track, though they would not be rushed.

“Let me assure you that the liberating signal from Cde Geza is coming very soon,” Chivero said. “This is a people’s project, not an individual’s project. Organization and managerial competence are essential. The planning, execution, and aftermath management must be meticulous to achieve the best results with minimal cost.”

Chivero, seated in a dimly lit room with a window behind him, did not disclose Geza’s whereabouts but insisted the war veterans were committed to their mission. He stressed that their movement aimed for a peaceful transition rather than bloodshed.

“A good commander wins a war without firing a bullet,” he said. “We are dealing with a regime that has no respect for human life. Their hit squads, trained in Belarus, are out to kill, not to arrest. Cde Geza was being pursued by 10 different units with orders to shoot on sight and claim he resisted arrest.”

The group claims that some security forces have been embedded within police units, including homicide and law and order sections, to eliminate political threats.

Geza, who until recently was seen as loyal to the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, has emerged as a vocal critic of Mnangagwa, accusing him of economic mismanagement and attempting to establish a family dynasty. His faction claims widespread support within the ruling party and the military.

Divisions within Zanu-PF have deepened amid Mnangagwa’s reported push to remove presidential term limits and extend his rule beyond 2028. His allies, including cabinet ministers, are advocating for the constitutional amendment, but they face fierce resistance from Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s supporters and opposition groups.

Meanwhile, journalist Blessed Mhlanga was arrested last week for allegedly publishing videos of Geza on Alpha Media Holdings’ HStv. Mhlanga, charged with inciting public violence, was denied bail.

As tensions escalate, it remains to be seen whether the war veterans’ movement will gain momentum or face further suppression from the state.

RUFF KID WAS SO WRONG FOR SAYING I AM GREEDY AND I DON’T GIVE OUT EMAIL ADDRESSES SAYS ROBERTO

RUFF KID WAS SO WRONG FOR SAYING I AM GREEDY AND I DON’T GIVE OUT EMAIL ADDRESSES SAYS ROBERTO

Roberto, who was a guest on Kenny 1 on 1’s last week’s podcast episode, took a moment to explain long-standing allegations of him not sharing important information with his peers.

He took shots at rapper Ruff Kid who he says sold false perceptions about him to several artists in the industry as he accused him of being greedy and not wanting to share information regarding submission of music video to top TV stations out side Zambia.

The singer mentioned that he had found Ruff Kid in the music industry as he always passed with his brother General Ozzy in Kabwe, but he was shocked when he learned that the rapper was spreading a false narrative about him and it seems even after so many years, the singer is still unhappy with the rapper’s actions.

Roberto said that he was approached by the rapper asking for contact information after he noticed his hit song Amarulah, which propelled him into prominent fame was playing on various major television platforms. This was the genesis of this long standing feud.

The singer started that, at first, when he submitted his Amarulah music video, it was rejected by certain TV stations as it didn’t meet the required standards but later started playing after the song started going viral. It can be deduced from this that the TV stations in question are likely TRACE, MTV Base Africa among others as they are the one where artists submit through their website.

The 39 year-old singer in a conversation with Kenny T seemed to allude that the rapper had submitted his music video but were rejected, and he was blamed for those rejections. He said in part as he tried to explain the situation, “If I am going to you to say, I’m kindly for a contact number for this TV station and you give it to me. I need to make sure I meet the standards the TV station is asking or requesting, correct? So, if I send my music video and it’s below standard, I can’t come back to you to say, why is my video not playing?” Roberto said the rapper was so wrong for making those allegations.

This frenzy in the industry resulted in many artists calling the singer greedy, something he did not appreciate. The singer further mentioned that no one ever came to him and asked for information and challenged them if anyone could come out and say they did.

The singer explain that he does not have any contact information to hid as all the information is available on the TV channels’ website, stating that anyone can access it without going through him as he doesn’t have direct contact with the said TV stations.

Mnangagwa’s ED2030 team back on campaign trail

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s political allies have reignited their push for a 2030 campaign despite the president’s recent public assertion that he would not seek to extend his rule beyond his second term, which is set to conclude in 2028. The move has placed Mnangagwa’s supporters at odds with a growing faction of war veterans and their military backers, who are increasingly vocal in their calls for the president to step down after his current term ends.

Mnangagwa made waves earlier this year when, in a meeting with selected media editors at State House in Harare, he declared that he would not extend his presidency beyond the constitutionally mandated 2028 limit. However, his political backers, including prominent figures such as Daniel Garwe, Owen Ncube, Tino Machakaire, Tatenda Mavetera, John Paradza, Lovemore Matuke, Goodwills Masimirembwa, Paul Tungwarara, Edson Chakanyuka Chiherenge, and Robson Mavhenyengwa, have begun pushing for a 2030 campaign, which many critics see as an attempt to position the president for a third term.

This new push comes after an escalating confrontation between Mnangagwa’s camp and the Zimbabwe National War Veterans Association (ZNWVA), whose chairman Ethan Mathibela has demanded that the president resign. Mathibela and other war veterans have accused Mnangagwa of mismanaging the country’s affairs and running a kleptocracy, enriching his family, cronies, and political allies while the people continue to suffer. The war veterans, who played a pivotal role in Mnangagwa’s rise to power, have openly declared war on the president, calling for him to honor his constitutional limits and relinquish power in 2028.

The tension has intensified following the arrest of Blessed Geza, a prominent war veteran leader, who is wanted by the police for making outspoken attacks against Mnangagwa. Geza has accused the president of attempting to extend his presidency beyond the constitutional limit and running a regime dominated by corruption. Geza faces multiple criminal charges, including undermining the authority of the president and insulting him, charges that have sparked outrage among his supporters.

In an unexpected twist, Mnangagwa’s allies, after retreating temporarily following the public backlash, are now reasserting their push for a 2030 presidential bid. According to sources close to the situation, these allies are attempting to persuade Mnangagwa to change his stance and seek a third term, despite his earlier declarations. The proponents of this move claim they are working in the interest of national stability and continuity, arguing that Zimbabwe cannot afford to change leadership amid ongoing economic challenges.

However, Mnangagwa has repeatedly insisted that he will not be swayed by those attempting to extend his rule. “I am a constitutionalist,” Mnangagwa declared, implying that his supporters are not acting within the bounds of the country’s constitution. His statement reflects his commitment to constitutional governance, even as critics point out that his rise to power itself was the result of a coup in November 2017, which saw him oust the long-standing former president Robert Mugabe.

The political fallout from these events is significant, with some analysts warning that the situation could lead to further instability. The war veterans, once seen as loyal allies, are now at the forefront of opposition to Mnangagwa, and the growing public division is threatening to unravel the fragile political alliances that have held the government together since 2017.

As Mnangagwa’s allies continue to push for a 2030 campaign, the nation remains on edge, with the political and military forces that once supported the president now in open conflict over his future. The next few months could prove pivotal in determining whether Mnangagwa’s leadership will survive a direct challenge from his former supporters or whether the calls for a change in leadership will ultimately lead to a political shift in Zimbabwe.

The president’s allies, however, remain resolute, promising to convince Mnangagwa to stand again for office in 2030, despite the constitutional limits that they claim to support. As tensions rise, the political landscape in Zimbabwe appears set for a fierce battle over the future of the country’s leadership.

Zimbabwe on Track to Phase Out US Dollar as ZiG Usage Grows- RBZ Governor

Zimbabwe on Track to Phase Out US Dollar as ZiG Usage Grows- RBZ Governor

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has said that plans to completely phase out the US dollar and adopt the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) as the sole currency by 2030 are on course as the local currency’s usage has risen.

ZiG Now Accounts for 30% of Transactions
RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu shared this update during a special edition of ZTN’s Beyond the Dollar podcast on Friday, 28 February. He dismissed claims that the ZiG has not been widely accepted, stating that its use has grown from 20% to 30% of total transactions since its launch in April last year.

“It is not true that the ZiG has not been widely embraced,” he said.

He explained that while 70% of transactions in Zimbabwe are still conducted in US dollars, the shift toward the ZiG is evident.

“Remember, we are in a multi-currency regime, which means you can use US dollars or any other currency or the local currency — ZiG. What we have seen is that currently, 30 percent of the transactions that are being done in this country are being done in ZiG, and 70 percent are being done in US dollars,” Mushayavanhu explained.

Zimbabwe on Track to Phase Out US Dollar as ZiG Usage Grows
Mushayavanhu highlighted that this marks an improvement since he took over as RBZ governor from John Mangudya.

“When I came in, the ratio was 80:20 — 20 percent of the transactions were in local currency, and 80 percent of the transactions were in foreign currency,” Mangudya disclosed.

Looking ahead, John Mushayavanhu explained that the goal is to have all transactions in Zimbabwe being done in ZiG.

“By 2030, we want the ratio to be 100 percent ZiG and zero percent foreign currency,” he said before adding, “So, as far as adoption of ZiG is concerned, I can tell you that the figures are showing that it’s increasing.”

Lecturers in Hot Water as Zimbabwe Gender Commission Investigates Shocking Abuse in Universities and Colleges

Lecturers in Hot Water as Zimbabwe Gender Commission Investigates Shocking Abuse in Universities and Colleges

Unethical lecturers and officials are in hot soup as the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) as the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) has launched a major investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in institutions of higher learning across the country.

Zimbabwe Gender Commission Investigates Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions
ZGC Chairperson, Mrs. Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, announced the investigation in a government gazette published last Friday. The commission is responding to reports of widespread sexual misconduct in tertiary institutions, where students are allegedly being exploited in exchange for better grades or other favours.

The issue has raised alarm among policymakers, parents, and gender activists, with many calling for stricter measures to protect students.

Victims and Witnesses Urged to Come Forward
Some perpetrators have reportedly taken advantage of students facing financial difficulties, particularly those struggling with accommodation, food, and academic expenses. In response, the ZGC has stepped in to investigate these abuses and ensure that learning environments remain safe and fair for all students.

The commission has invited victims and witnesses to submit written complaints, statements, and any supporting evidence that could assist in the investigation.

“Further to the above notice, an invitation is hereby given to any victims or witnesses to any acts of sexual harassment and abuse in tertiary institutions and institutions of higher learning to present to the Commission written complaints, witnesses’ statements and any other supporting documents or evidence which can assist in the investigation,” reads the notice.

Oral Hearings to Follow
Once the written complaints have been reviewed, the ZGC will conduct oral hearings on dates to be announced later.

“Oral hearings will commence thereafter on dates to be advised by the Commission. Any person who wishes to make any submissions regarding the above should visit the Commission Offices and/or submit them, in writing, to the Chief Executive Officer, Zimbabwe Gender Commission, First Floor, Pax House, 89, Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, Harare, or send to complaints@zgc.co.zw by not later than the 31st of August, 2025,” the notice reads.

French company exosens to build new factory in the U.S. amid NATO’s push for increased defense spending

0

A French company, Exosens, which manufactures a key component in night vision systems used by some NATO countries, has announced plans to build a new factory in the United States.

This announcement comes as NATO members are being urged to increase their defense spending in response to rising global security concerns.

Exosens stated that the new factory, located in the northeastern state of Massachusetts, is expected to begin operations in 2027.

The factory is part of a broader $21 million investment initiative, which also includes expanding the company’s operations in Europe.

Exosens emphasized that this investment is strategically important as it aligns with NATO’s efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities.

The company highlighted that the return of high-density combat situations has made night operation abilities an essential tactical advantage in modern warfare.

In a statement, Exosens underscored the critical role that night vision systems play in ensuring effective military operations during nighttime conditions.

The company’s decision to invest in new facilities comes at a time when the importance of advanced technology in defense systems has become more pronounced, particularly with regard to enhancing operational effectiveness.

Exosens’ new factory will not only support NATO’s defense strategy but also contribute to the growing demand for cutting-edge technology in military applications.

In addition to the U.S. factory, Exosens recently announced a significant contract with a Finnish company that manufactures night vision goggles.

This contract with the Finnish company, a NATO member, further solidifies Exosens’ role in supplying critical components for defense systems used by NATO countries.

The deal with Finland is expected to contribute to the company’s growth in the defense sector, as it continues to meet the rising demand for advanced night vision technologies.

By establishing a new manufacturing facility in the U.S., Exosens is positioning itself as a key player in the global defense industry.

The move also demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting NATO’s strategic goals of improving military readiness and capability through technological advancements.

Exosens’ expansion in both the U.S. and Europe reflects the growing importance of multinational collaboration in defense and security operations.

As NATO continues to push for higher defense spending, the establishment of such manufacturing facilities will play a significant role in ensuring the alliance’s technological superiority on the global stage.

This investment by Exosens represents a significant step in meeting the evolving needs of NATO’s defense forces as they prepare for future challenges in an increasingly complex global security environment.

The company’s efforts are expected to bolster NATO’s operational readiness, particularly in areas where night vision and related technologies are crucial to achieving military objectives.

With the new factory set to begin operations in 2027, Exosens is positioning itself to be at the forefront of the defense technology sector, playing a pivotal role in the continued advancement of NATO’s defense capabilities.

UPND CADRE’S POLICE MEDICAL REPORT DOESN’T INDICATE THAT HE WAS SHOT WITH A GUN – STATE WITNESS

UPND CADRE’S POLICE MEDICAL REPORT DOESN’T INDICATE THAT HE WAS SHOT WITH A GUN – STATE WITNESS

Lusaka… Monday March 3, 2025

A STATE witness has told the Lusaka High Court that the medical report for UPND cadre, Emmanuel Simposya, issued at Ndabala Police Post does not in any way indicate that he had been shot with a gun.

The court also heard how the UPND campaign team went to the area where the opposition Socialist Party (SP) was campaigning from as scheduled by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), resulting in the violence.

UPND Mkushi District youth chairperson Anthony Kaineti, 33, testified before Lady Justice Ruth Hachitapika Chibbabuka that he was fully aware that normally, the police medical report will expressly state the cause of injury just like when a person has been stubbed.

Kaineti told the court that Simposya’s medical report that was issued at Ndabala Police Post did not show that his injury was caused by a gun shot.

He was testifying, Friday, in a matter in which SP president Fred M’membe is charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (OABH) during the Muchinda Ward council by-election campaign in the Kamalamba area of Serenje District in 2023.

In the first count, allegations are that the opposition leader, on April 8, 2023 in Serenje District, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous harm, wounded Emmanuel Simposya without any lawful justification.

In the second count where he is jointly charged with his Bodyguard Daniel Mumba, M’membe is alleged to have assaulted the ‘victim’ in question on the material day.

Particulars in the last count are that the two accused persons allegedly assaulted Haggai Kwenda.

In his testimony, Kaineti said he was aware that the opposition political party was campaigning in the area as scheduled by the ECZ but his team was only passing through on their way to Ndabala, where another UPND team was camped for purpose of delivering foodstuffs.

“It was on April 8, 2023, when we arose in the morning with my friends going to Muchinda Ward of Serenje District from Mkushi. We went to assist our friends to campaign, and upon arrival, we went straight the main command centre where we met our leaders,” Kaineti narrated.

“On that particular day, we were told that it was not our day to campaign, but the Socialist Party in that area. We were told that we would only dispatch food on that particular day. Thereafter, a group that I had gone with were divided and mixed with the groups we found at the centre. I travelled with Elizabeth, Haggai and Mary. We went the route leading to Ndabala to take food.”

Kaineti also told the court that contrary to the phone call he had received whilst conducting party activities in Muchinda Ward, Simposya was not shot dead.

He narrated that on their way back to Mulilima, his team rushed to the Mothers’ Shelter, a place where the SP was holding its public meeting, after receiving a phone call suggesting that Simposya had been shot and that he died on the spot.

Kaineti stated that upon arrival at the Mothers Shelter and disembarking from the vehicle, he saw M’membe from a distance surrounded by a group of SP members while firing warning shots in the air and picking up things on the ground.

Kaineti however said he could not narrate what triggered the violence as he was not on the scene and that he did not ask Simposya why he opted to pass where the opposition was having a public meeting.

“I parked the car near the entrance to the Mothers’ Shelter. I stepped out, and when looked in front I saw Haggai carrying Simposya on his shoulder. Haggai’s clothes were soaked with blood and Simposya appeared powerless,” Kaineti narrated, adding that: “I advised the people I was with to lie down on the grass because of the stones that were being thrown at us.”

Asked during cross examination by Defense Counsel Boniface Chiwala, what the distance was between where they were hiding and where Dr M’membe stood, Kaineti confirmed that there was a bush in between.

Defense Counsel: Between where you hide, and where Dr M’membe was, where there a lot of people?
State Witness: Yes.

Defense Counsel: Was there a bush in between you and where Dr M’membe stood?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: And Dr M’membe was surrounded by a lot of people?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: But in hiding, you still managed to see Dr M’membe picking things on the ground?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Does Serenje receive a lot of rains, and in that season, you were hiding in the grass?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Confirm that according to your evidence, Dr M’membe shot in the air?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Confirm the crowd dispersed and you saw people running, so what was the purpose of hiding?
State Witness: We were afraid of the gunshots.

Defense Counsel: What was the purpose of firing shots in the air?
State Witness: I don’t know. I don’t deal with guns.

Kaineti who struggled to explain the purpose of a warning shot, testified having chased Dr M’membe’s vehicle as he left the Mothers Shelter.

Defense Counsel: When you saw Dr M’membe drive out, you said that you followed him?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Confirm that you used a tarmac?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Dr M’membe used which route?
State Witness: He equally used the Tarmac

Defense Counsel: So you can use the tarmac when going to Kamalamba basic school?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: People coming from Mulilima, can get to Kamalamba Basic School using the tarmac?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: So did you ask Emmanuel Simposya why the opted to pass where the opposition was having a public meeting?
State Witness: No.

Defense Counsel: You agree that the Command Centre for UPND was at Kamalamba?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: Was it then right to pass where there was an opposition meeting instead of the tarmac?
State Witness: Because they always used that route

Defense Counsel: Are you aware that the Court went to the scene?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: You agree with me that the gravel to Kamalamba School, there is a dump place where Water sticks?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: And there is water that is stagnant there?
State Witness: There is ilungu.

Defense Counsel: When you say ilingu, what do you mean?
State Witness: It is a place near the river and contains water

Defense Counsel: So it makes sense that people should prefer to use where there is water than where the tarmac is?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: So it is good to avoid the tarmac and use where it is waterlogged?
State Witness: Yes

Defense Counsel: How far is it from Mothers Shelter to Kamalamba?
State Witness: It’s not far

Defense Counsel: When you are standing at mothers’ shelter, can you see Kamalamba?
State Witness: Yes it is visible.

The matter has since been adjourned to Friday, March 7, for continued trial.

OPPOSITION WARN OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE …should government and the ECZ fail to explain the alleged attempts to have the census results manipulated

OPPOSITION WARN OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

…should government and the ECZ fail to explain the alleged attempts to have the census results manipulated

Lusaka… Monday March 3, 2025

A coalition of opposition political parties and civil society organizations has raised serious concerns over the Zambian government’s handling of the 2022 Census of Population and Housing.

Speaking at an extraordinary press conference, the group condemned the government of reacting negatively and in a panicked manner to the release of the census findings.

The opposition and civil society leaders criticized what they described as an unprecedented move by government officials to discredit a census report conducted under their own administration.

They noted that the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) had followed standard practice by releasing a summary of the main census report after completing data cleaning and analysis.

However, they pointed out that the launch of the report at Mulungushi International Conference Centre last week was marred by controversy.

At its launch, a dispute erupted between senior officials of ZamStats and the Chairperson of the Civil Service Commission, Dr. Choolwe Beyani.

Dr. Beyani, a trained historian, questioned the accuracy of the census findings and reprimanded ZamStats officials, particularly board chairperson Oliver Chinganya, who previously served as the Director of the Africa Centre for Statistics at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

The coalition noted that this was the first time in Zambia’s history that a government had openly challenged its own census data.

They warned that the controversy surrounding the report could undermine public confidence in the 2022 census and affect national planning and electoral integrity.

CONCERNS OVER PRESIDENT INVOLVEMENT

One of the key issues raised was the alleged pre-release of the census summary report to President Hakainde Hichilema and the Civil Service Commission.

Dr. Beyani revealed that the President had expressed dissatisfaction with the report and instructed ZamStats not to proceed with its launch until corrections were made.

In light of this revelation, the opposition and civil society groups demanded transparency from the government, asking:

Why the census report was first presented to the President and the Civil Service Commission, rather than being released through ZamStats as mandated by law.

When and why the State House meeting on the census report took place, and who was involved.

Whether there are official records of the meeting, including the President’s directives.

The coalition insisted that transparency was essential, warning that any political interference in census data could have serious implications for resource allocation and electoral processes.

MISSING DATA ON ETHNICITY AND LANGUAGE

The opposition also raised concerns about the omission of key demographic information from the summary report, particularly data on ethnic composition and widely spoken languages.

They pointed out that previous census reports, including the 2010 edition, had contained such information, and questioned why it was excluded from the 2022 summary.

THEY DEMANDED ANSWERS REGARDING:

Whether the summary report presented to the public was the same as the one initially shown to the President.

The rationale behind labeling the document a “Revised Summary Report.”

The timeline for the release of the missing demographic data.

Political Interference and Attacks on ZamStats

During the press conference, the coalition condemned the “uncalled-for attacks” on ZamStats by the ruling UPND.

They referred to Dr. Beyani’s claims that the census report contained anomalies in 15 wards in Southern Province, where figures reportedly did not match the ECZ voters’ roll.

The opposition leaders questioned the basis for comparing census data with voter registration records, arguing that the two serve different purposes.

They also condemned the government for selectively challenging census data in specific regions while ignoring potential discrepancies elsewhere.

Furthermore, they demanded clarification on whether the three ZamStats directors—Mulenga Musepa, Chola Nakazwe, and Goodson Sinyenga—had been dismissed over their handling of the census report.

CALL FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

In response to the controversy, the opposition and civil society groups called for an independent investigation into the handling of the census report.

They proposed that the investigation be conducted by a team of experts, including representatives from civil society, political parties, and church organizations.

The coalition emphasized that free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy and that any manipulation of census or electoral data could threaten national stability.

They warned that the government’s handling of the 2022 census could erode public trust ahead of the 2026 general elections.

CONCLUSION

The statement concluded with a strong appeal to the government to address the concerns with transparency and seriousness.

The coalition warned that failure to do so could lead to unrest, especially if citizens feel that census data is being manipulated for political purposes.

“The answers that we seek from the government have the potential to build or erode public trust and to seriously affect the integrity and credibility of the 2026 general election,” the statement read.

The coalition leaders urged the government to engage with the public openly and avoid actions that could cast doubt on the credibility of Zambia’s governance institutions.
