KUOMBOKA WAS CRIME FREE – POLICE

April 21, 2024

Deputy Inspector General of Police In-Charge of Operations Milner Muyambango has described this year’s Kuomboka Ceremony as crime-free.

Mr.Muyambango has commended Police officers involved in policing the ceremony for their professionalism and commitment to duty.

The Deputy Police Chief, who was overseeing the security of the ceremony, noted that there was no report of illicit activities before and during the colourful event.

He thanked members of the public in Mongu and Limulunga Districts for coordinating well with Police officers and other security personnel in order to ensure that peace and order prevailed.

The Deputy Police Chief said he was happy with the way Police officers conducted themselves before and during the ceremony. He said the professional manner in which Police officers interacted with people who travelled to witness the 2024 Kuomboka Ceremony must be commended.

“We are happy with the professionalism and commitment exhibited by our officers who we deployed to police the ceremony in Mongu and Limulunga Districts,” Mr. Muyambango said.

He said enough officers were deployed in order to ensure people’s lives and property were protected.

” We have heightened patrols especially in Mongu District and surrounding areas in order to maintain peace,” he added.

Mr. Muyambango revealed that Police officers in Mongu District recorded one case of drowning in which a 13-year-old boy died after drowning at Mulamba harbour.

A Grade 8 boy at a named School within Mongu District identified as Siyanga Mukololo of Mongu’s ilute compound is alleged to have attempted to swim from one side of the harbour to the area where the Kuomboka Royal Boat was scheduled to dock.

The incident happened on April 20, 2024, around 15:00 hours.

Frontic efforts by Police Marine officers to save his life proved futile. Marine officers managed to retrieve the lifeless body at 16:45 hours. He was rushed to Lewanika General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The body was deposited in the same hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

However, Police have since opened an inquiry file into the matter.

Africa is at a turning point, but economic reforms must be sustained — IMF

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Africa is at a turning point, having experienced a multiple of shocks that led to many economies into crisis in the past four years.

“The region is at a turning point. With the right policy choices today, I am confident that this moment could set the stage for this century to be the African century,” said, Mr Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director, African Department.

He was speaking at the IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Africa in Washington, US, on Friday, April 2024, and monitored by the Ghana News Agency.

The continent recorded a negative economic growth of -1.6 per cent in the 2020 pandemic, era, but have since returned to a positive growth path, though fluctuating.

First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, IMFC Chair Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan and Finance Minister of Spain Nadia Calvino attend the IMFC Plenary during the 2024 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund in Washington on April 19, 2024. IMF Photo / Lewis Joly
Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was 4.7 per cent in 2021, reduced to 4.0 per cent in 2022, declining more to 3.4 per cent in 2023, but 2024 would see a 3.8 GDP, and 4.0 per cent in 2025 for Africa per IMF projections.

“These are encouraging signs. But the region is not out of the woods yet. So sustaining reforms will be important for macroeconomic conditions to continue to improve,” Mr Selassie said.

He noted that sustaining economic gains would ensure that countries in the region could build their resilience to shocks, generate jobs, diversify their economies, and improve living standards for all.

He recommended three priorities for governments in the region, going forward – improving public financing, sustaining inflation reduction measures, and boosting structural policy reforms.

“But the burden should not be on countries alone. Support from the international community will remain essential,” he said, adding that the IMF stood ready to support, having already provided US$58 billion in financing to the region since the start of the pandemic.

In the Regional Economic Outlook, the Fund noted that Africa had recovered its footing, but governments were still grappling with the funding squeeze, high borrowing costs, and rollover risks.

It called for improved public finances focused on revenue mobilisation, maintaining price stability while supporting growth, and implementing structural reforms such as expediting trade integration and improving the business environment to attract more foreign direct investments.

The report also reiterated the need for international community support, noting that countries in sub-Saharan Africa would need an estimated gross external financing about $70 billion annually (6 percent of GDP) from 2024 to 2028.

“It is crucial that both multilateral and official bilateral creditors continue to play a key role in providing financing to the region and supporting domestic policy and reform efforts,” the report stated.

HH CONFERS WITH THE CLERGY IN MONGU AFTER ATTENDING KUOMBOKA

TAKE-AWAYS :

Summary by Mark Simuuwe :

HH confers with the Clergy from different churches who included among others , Catholic Church ( Mongu Diocese), Bread of Life , UCZ , SDA , All Pentecostal churches in Mongu , Wesleyan Church , Apostolic church etc .

Implores them to promote unity in the country , and stressed the following;

1. We have achieved Unity in diversity in which all citizens must be treated the same way ; under the previous leadership , people could go to intercity and be beaten accusing them of being HH supporters but not anymore ;

2. Law and order is an important achievement for us ; because human beings particularly Zambians need to be free and protected .

3. Freedom for citizens is an achievement; “ 10 days before elections, I went to Chingola then decided to go worship with the Catholic Church – I was greeted with a bullet who ch took off the handle of the door where I was sitted … today we do not experience such things . We held the Kuomboka yesterday without any teargas by police;

4. We were in a debt crisis when. We took over leadership and we have worked on it by restructuring it ; we have to deal with the West and the East to help us restructure the debt . Without debt restructuring , Zambia was going to pay $7.8 billion in 10 years but with debt restructuring we have to pay $750 million only in 10 years .

We have reduced our debt quantum to between 35-45 % .

5. We have given you context – so no one should mislead others on the debt .

6. Reminded the clergy after demonstrating a concoction of government officials belonging to the UPND government who were asked to tell the audience about the church they go to who composed of ( Catholics , SDAs , Pentecostals , Apostolics , Jehovah’s witnesses ) that these people in government are your own church members ; He says at times some people speak as though government officials from another world ;

7. He stressed that NAPSA pensions has no queues anymore because government has introduced many reliefs on pensions such as partial withdrawal .

8. He also dismissed assertions that NAPSA is bankrupt and stated that NAPSA now has a new model of public private partnerships which has boosted NAPSA capacity to do business and generate more money .

He says PF wanted to give Lusaka- Ndola dual carriage way at $1.3 billion but UPND is now doing it at $500 a per kilometer. He says UPND is doing durable roads not the costly poor quality roads we witnessed.

9. We shall have the first ever industrial solar plant to produce 3000 jobs . Never in the history of western province have you ever witnessed and industry to produce 3000 jobs .

10. “Shaft 28 in Luanshya is back : when I went to China I lobbied and President Xi Jingping accepted and we have investors in Luanshya today “, says HH .

11. “ If you go to Kitwe and Mufulira , there is now money in Kitwe and Mufulira because of the mines that are coming back . We now have the council in Kitwe paying Retirees from the council because they have received money “.

12. “We need jobs in Western Province- if we don’t allow development in western province , we shall have the province remaining behind “.

13. “This province elected me as Zambia’s president. The people here voted for me so this is Zambia . We must be proud . Free education is here ! They said where will HH find the money to provide free education, I knew where to find money and this free education is today a reality “.

14. “We have managed to attract $1.5 billion dollars in Northwestern and now we are going to have the biggest nickel mine in Africa there . “

15. “Three months ago , we signed that they are bringing an additional investment of $2 billion in Lumwana . You will soon the fruits very soon there as well . “

16. Skills training – children who never went to school are now training as Capenters , Metal fabricators etc

17. We now see nurses , teachers being employed from every province . “ I make sure that I ask my colleagues to make sure the all the provinces are involved in the recruitment process .”

18. We can go on and on but I wish to emphasize that we should be engaging more often with the clergy !

19. We shall work with the church to make Zambia a better place for our people . All churches that do social programmes … will work with us as we address even the drought issue so that we can feed our people !

20. We must use this drought to serve our people even those in remotest places across the country. “

21. “We have brought facilities for irrigation and we need to work together to ensure our poeople have food . We know that the clergy know the communities even better. “

Conclusions:

There are many more things we have done which we can not sum up here in one single meeting .

“I will be coming back soon to launch the Power Project , Luanginga bridge , and also the hospital that I am building where I was arrested along Limulunga road .” This project is privately funded as my gift to the people around there who got affected when I was arrested at the same spot . Many knew I was on the death list . “

“. When I come we shall chat again . Wisdom comes from God . The rest will fall in place when God is with us . I agree that the Government and the church must work together . Last week , I signed a law which shall allow stakeholders like yourselves to be part of the CDF management “, says HH .

“ on the idea of pointing fingers at the PF , yes we must focus on building on what has been done but we shall point fingers at them to return what they stole from the people of Zambia so that we use it to benefit the people “ .

“ I agree with the message from the Clergy that we must trust in the Lord . God works through us . We have never seen this kind of drought but God shall be with us as we look at the alternatives to help our people “.

Of all the presidents; how did Edgar Lungu walk away from State House a rich man?

0

When attending church service at the Reformed Church in Zambia – RCZ Chipata Main branch in Eastern province the other week, former president Edgar Lungu encouraged citizens, in his own words, to “pray for politicians to reduce on lying.”

“Today, lying has become a culture among politicians in the country,” he told the congregation.

While we concur with him that leaders ought to always remain truthful although we are not quite sure exactly what lies he was referring to; we’d equally encourage him to confess to us how he managed to amass so much wealth within the short period he was in State House. Going by the shockingly staggering amounts he was able to hand-out to his family members as revealed by themselves, we’re left with little doubt but to buy into word on the streets, ba Lungu has actually earned himself a place at the high table as one of Africa’s richest!

But how on earth did this individual who was just running a bar in Chawama called “Edgars” and of course, chasing after elusive cases as a struggling lawyer manage to walk away from State House a rich man when his predecessors couldn’t do so? Shouldn’t we be contemplating stripping him off of his immunity so that he’s given an opportunity to explain to us how he made ‘his’ money?

Anyway, since we love to speak with facts as much as possible, we shall seek to probe further and consider how the other former First families are doing compared to this ‘industrious’ family!

Our first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda had 8 children with his dear lovely wife, mama Betty Kaunda. She was a perfect example of a First Lady – totally unblemished character and devoid of any scandals! While others have entangled themselves in controversial escapeds in the recent past; travelling as farther afield as the USA to receive outdated fire tenders, on behalf of government, that are better off remaining in a museum or indeed poking their nose in the affairs of the state and gracing campaign rallies, Mama Betty confined herself to Nkwazi house (official residence of the president) managing the affairs of the house.

Of all the Kaunda children, only 3 of them could be said to have been in the limelight – Panji, Wezi and Tilwenji. Panji is a graduate from the prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy in the UK. After enjoying an illustrious career in the military, he quietly retired to farming in rural Sinda, Eastern province while Wezi, who had followed into his footsteps by becoming a military officer would later metamorphose into a radical politician who didn’t brook any nonsense! Having served as MP, he was poised to succeed his father as opposition UNIP leader before a hail of assassins’ bullets prematurely curtailed his life in his own driveway. The soft-spoken and camera-shy Tilwenji Kaunda who had been dabbling in business eventually took over as UNIP president although he wouldn’t do much to improve its dwindling fortunes.

Apart from getting involved in a shooting incident in a Lusaka surbub that saw one of the Kaunda children, Kambarage getting indicted for murder, there’s absolutely no record of any of the Kaundas appearing before law enforcement authorities for questioning to answer charges of embezzlement or corruption. Kambarage would finally walk away a free man after a superior court ruled that he acted in self-defence, upon appeal.

The man who made KK meet his Waterloo in a case of David vs. Goliath, trade unionist turned politician, Frederick Chiluba had 9 children. Castro was the most notorious, earning himself generous space in the Newspapers for all the wrong reasons – from brandishing firearms in public, shooting callgirls and getting embroiled in physical fights in night clubs, randomly stopping his vehicle on the middle of the road while screaming, “I’m the 2Pac of Zambia!” and flaunting cash in public, wondering why most Zambians were paupers while him and his dad were rich! Like his siblings, Castro wasn’t bothered about earthly possessions – owning mansions in upmarket neighborhoods or boasting of countless fleets of vehicles; he was just a spoilt brat eager to have fan with his friends! The only other sibling who would stir his own fair share of controversy was Miko. In the company of 3 of his friends, they’d entice a girl and make her drunk after which they had what amongst the youngsters is known as ‘kansato’ with her. To the uninitiated, they took turns in sleeping with her for whatever reasons!

Although the second Republican President would suffer the indignity of having his immunity stripped-off for allegedly looting and plundering our national resources, at least we never heard of any of his children forfeiting any illegally acquired property to the state. Apart from his pet project, the so-called Frederick J.T. Chiluba Institute of Democratic and Industrial Studies near UNZA which was forfeited to the state, he didn’t leave behind a profile of impressive properties dotted around Lusaka. While still serving as president, his wife Vera flirted around with the idea of running her own NGO – Hope Foundation, which at times would overshadow the work of government by making forays into forgotten places such as Shan’gombo for her charitable exploits! She left State House without any ominous clouds hovering over her head and would go on to become an MP in Eastern province, of course.

As readers may recall, Levy Mwanawasa had to resign as Vice President citing the ‘horrible stench’ of corruption in Chiluba’s government. Desperate to find a candidate without any tag of corruption attached to their name in the forthcoming elections, with UPND leader Anderson Mazoka breathing heavily on his neck, Chiluba would dispatch emissaries to go and ‘wake up’ Mwanawasa from retirement to be the MMD’s torch bearer in the 2001 crucial elections.

In an election victory widely believed to have been stolen from Mazoka, Mwanawasa who campaigned on the platform of “government of laws other than men” was finally sworn in as President, and he wouldn’t disappoint. He had seven children, altogether. During much of his tenure, his children mostly remained in the dark shadows of State House. It’s only in recent times that we came to know of some of the Mwanawasa children such as Patrick who assumed the role of deputy permanent secretary in the PF regime and Chipo, one of President Hichilema’s aides.

Mwanawasa never shied away from reminding us he was allergic to corruption! True to this, he never entertained the idea of any of his children cutting deals or indeed dipping their hands into the national treasury by whatever means! And today, they’re walking around the streets of Lusaka with their heads held-up. Going by recent revelations that the family almost lost one of their properties due to ‘nkongole’ actually gives credence to assertions that the Mwanawasas never abused their affinity with power to award themselves government contracts or cut deals with those doing business with government.

When the cold hand of death descended on Mwanawasa midway through his term unfortunately, his vice president Rupiah Banda would step into his shoes although he wouldn’t quite fit in. Immediately his government settled in it was rocked by a terrible stench of corruption that went as far as the skies! Banda had 8 children in all – 5 from his previous marriage and 3 from his second union. One of his children, Henry found himself at the centre of controversy, getting his hands dirty with allegations of corruption. With the blessings of his father, he brokered an allegedly corrupt deal in which Kenyan oil trading company Dalbit Petroleum clinched a multimillion-dollar contract to supply finished petroleum products to Zambia in 2009.

Henry was also fingered in a corruption case involving Dora Siliya, the former Minister of Transport & Communications, relating to the controversial appointment of a Cayman Island-registered company to value Zambia’s telecommunication assets. The chilling tales of looting did not end there. Henry was further embroiled in yet another scandal as a key figure in a oil deal worth $2.5 million with Nigeria’s Sarb Energy Limited to supply crude oil. The oil never made it to Zambia! He is also said to have been practically in charge of handling campaign funds for his father amounting to millions of dollars whose source remains a matter of speculation. Scared of being sent to jail, Henry would go into self-imposed exile immediately there was a change of government.

On the other hand , his elder brother Andrew would be arrested and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Lusaka Magistrates court for corruption relating to soliciting and receiving gratification to facilitate the award of road projects to Fratelli Locci, an Italian road construction firm. He would later challenge the ruling in the Lusaka High Court.

Banda’s spouse,Thandiwe wasn’t so lucky either! She would be arrested and charged for corruption regarding the Mpundu Trust flats, but her gallant lawyers would fight the case in court tooth and nail until she was let-off the hook.

Like Chiluba, the fourth Republican president would have his immunity from prosecution removed. He was arrested and charged for corruption and theft of public resources! As fate would have it, the man that wanted to see Banda behind the bars for his alleged wrong doing finally succumbed to his prolonged illness. After Sata’s demise, the new Edgar Lungu’s administration would immediately discontinue the case and somehow allow him to enjoy his retirement as a reward for having endorsed and campaigned for Edgar Lungu and his Patriotic Front. But we are getting ahead of ourselves, aren’t we?

Anyway, like every human being, President Michael Sata had his own weaknesses; more especially his unjustified reasons for excluding those perceived to be from the Zambezi provinces from his government. However, we award him credit for not regarding the national treasury as his pocket money where he could simply fish-out substantial amounts of money and hand it to his wife, children or girl friends willy-nilly! For instance, when he received intelligence reports that one of his sons was always in the company of some foreign nationals discussing business opportunities, he tasked one of his closest confidants, Wynter Kabimba, to have tete-a-tete with him as he wouldn’t have desired to see any of his children, “be on the run from the authorities like Henry Banda!” once he had left office. Mulenga Sata is probably back to his usual business of selling Germany Shepard’s by now!

Sata atleast had 10 children between two marriages. We have no doubt most of them continue sleeping soundly at night knowing that ba DEC or indeed ba ACC won’t come pounding on their doors, dead of the night, asking questions about their impropriety. As we may all be aware, his medical doctor wife Kaseba formed her own NGO, Ubutala Bwamumi Foundation, to continue pursuing what was closer to her heart – better health for all, particularly those battling cervical cancer. After the death of her husband, she would be deployed into the foreign service until her contract expired, recently. As far as we know, she has no criminal record there’s no criminal record, whatsoever!

This now brings us to our immediate past President Edgar Lungu! Information emerging from the court rooms regarding the Lungus bordering on corruption leaves so much to be desired! In a recent court ruling for instance, one of his daughters, Chiyeso forfeited more than K9 million worth of assets to the state. Among the assets forfeited to the state is Crest Lodge in the affluent Ibex Hill suburb of Lusaka. Apart from this, she lost three flats, two farms with a high cost house and four chicken runs in State Lodge area worth about K9.3 million. Chiyeso who was only admitted to the bar as a lawyer in 2018 could not explain how she acquired the same properties!

As it were, the most prominent child of them all is of course the politician, Tasila. She is equally in court for being in possession of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime! Key findings from investigations outlined in the charge sheet are that, Tasila Lungu’s earnings as a Councilor from 2016 to 2021 amounted to less than K184,966.41, while her declared assets stood at a staggering K6,130,505.58! Furthermore, the valuation of Farm No. F/2278 in Sinda district stood at K8,540,098.00 while the estimated costs of related construction works came to K13,950,378.83 bringing such transactions into question.

In a legal victory for the Director of Public Prosecutions chambers recently, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC) dismissed preliminary issues raised by the now Chawama Member of Parliament to have the said farm in Sinda forfeited to the state. The fast-track court is set to deliver judgement on whether the farm should be forfeited to the State or not.

The two sisters are not the only ones in the family to find themselves in conflict with the law. Their beloved brother Daliso along with his wife, both aged 36, were equally nabbed on charges of being in possession of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime contrary to Section 71 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act no. 19 of 2010.

According to Zambia Police Service spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, the couple’s company, Saloid Trading Limited which they co-own was found to be in possession of 48 motors vehicles valued at K23,258,405.00 and fixed assets valued at K12,825,100.00 while Daliso was facing an extra charge of money laundering. He stands accused of being in possession of 21 motor vehicles with an estimated value of about K1.5 million and fixed assets valued at K31.5 million, all registered in his name! Hamoonga further elaborated that Daliso Lungu has also been arrested and charged with money laundering regarding the alleged deposit of over K23.9 million into their company account, which is held at ZANACO Cairo Business Centre Lusaka Branch. All the offences took place between September 17, 2017 and January 24, 2022 while their father was still in State House. But kwena nangula tapaswosa?

The interesting episode does not end there. Their mother Esther is equally in court for the similar offences. In a recent application to the Economic and Financial Crimes Court, she failed to secure a stay of the forfieture proceedings against her siezed 15 double storey flats situated in Lusaka’s State Lodge area valued at K41.6 million! Mama Esther will in fact be remembered for entrusting $US 400, 000 with her niece in Kabwata for safe keeping instead of taking it to the Bank where there’s little risk of rats chewing it!

Such revelations would make us start believing what Kambwili was saying all along before his route to Damascus; that everywhere where there was construction in Lusaka, there were finger prints of Lungu and his family on them! What is stopping government from considering lifting his immunity so that he is given an opportunity to clear his name in the courts of law?

There’s no doubt ba Lungu presided upon the most corrupt regime; corruption was institutionalised under his watch and he was definitely a partaker! According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report released January 2023, corruption flourished to alarming levels under the Lungu regime!

” For instance, enormous financial resources invested in infrastructure projects, such as road construction, provided avenues for corruption, especially in the award of tenders, where political connections allowed members of the elite to bend the rules and access to lucrative contracts”, the 96-page report read.

The IMF diagnostic says corruption became particularly institutionalized during the 2016-2021 period.

Surely, can such an individual even have the audacity to say he wants to come back to power? To come and continue looting and plundering our meagre resources!

Boyd Mkandawire Was Kept At Ms Maureen’s House The Mother To Charlene

BOYD WAS KEPT AT MS MAUREEN’S HOUSE THE MOTHER TO CHARLENE

When Charlene Mumba Kasaba was still pupil at Arakan Secondary School, she fell pregnant for Boyd Mkandawire who was then in his initial football career. Charlene stopped School to give birth. At the time, Boyd Mkandawire and his people decided that he would marry Charlene.

He was charged a total of K20,000 for both damage (K12,000) and lobola (K8,000). The late Charlene moved with Boyd Mkandawire and they had a second child together. Mkandawire paid some money towards what he charged for damage.

However, when fame finally came for Mkandawire, during his days at Kabwe worriers, he started mistreating Charlene Mumba. The footballer started sleeping out for weeks and eventually, he informed Charlene that she should pack her belongings and go to her parents.

By this time, Boyd had paid a sum of K12,000 towards the K20,000 which he was charged. He told Charlene Mumba to inform her parents that he wanted his money back. Charlene even moved out of the house after one day, Boyd took to his matrimonial home another girl only known as Monica.

According to half baked information which Boyd has told Kalemba, he admits that the family of Charlene mistreated him when he went to mourn her.The truth is that he was ignored at the funeral mostly because of the ill treatment he subjected Charlene when she lived under his roof, having impregnated her and made her drop out of school. The family of Charlene says she was not married and Boyd has never paid anything for her. This is because he only paid money for damage. He did not pay for lobola.

But after misbehaving, Boyd Mkandawire finally lost fame. He became clubless and a free molecule. The money was gone. He now started chasing after Charlene who kept him at her mom’s house as she was working for a hotel. At the time of her death Charlene had nothing to do with Boyd Mkandawire that is why she could openly take videos with anyone she was comfortable with and post on TikTok. No normal married woman can take videos and upload on social media when she knows she is legally married.- Zibani Zambia

The Kuomboka
It’s a five day event of celebrations

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The ceremony celebrates the journey of His Majesty the the Litunga from his summer home at Lealui in the flooded villages of the Barotse Floodplain, to his winter home in Limulunga on the higher ground, until the flooded plains subside in June/July.

The return trip is usually held in August with a less publicized journey called the Kufuluhela.

On Saturday, the Day Starts

The 2024 Kuomboka Ceremony was taking a shorter route. From Lealui to Mulamba Harbour and then a drive to Limulunga Palace.

In the morning the Mutango, the first and oldest Royal drum, is played at Limbetelo, sending the message that the Litunga of Barotseland is set for the journey to Limulunga.

The Litunga left the Lealui palace in a short drive in his Indila, the official vehicle accompanied by Mwiine Lubemba, Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga II.

They came to the Lealui Bridge were the flotilla of his boats were docked and he was set to sail.
The team led by Hon. Sakwiba Sikota and Hon. Given Lubinda was present here.

After a brief ceremony and beating of drums, the Litunga and the Guest of Honour boarded the Nalikwanda.

We saw Hon. Gary Nkombo arrive shortly before the Nalikwanda set sail. He was ushered into a smaller boat reserved for the Prime Minister.

The flotilla set sail.

Midway, the boats docked and the Guest of Honour was allowed to leave the boat until they meet later in the evening when the Nalikwanda arrives at the Harbour.

Later the spy boats; Natamikwa and Mundende arrived before the Nalikwanda docked at Mulambwa Harbour where the Litunga was received by thousands of people.

A display of Manjabila, Lishoma, and Maoma, are played before the Nalikwanda docked.

Men performed the Silozi Royal salute (kushowelela) while the women danced and sang limeka and liimba.

Actor Giancarlo Esposito once contemplated arranging his murder for insurance money

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam show, actor Giancarlo Esposito revealed that before he landed his iconic role in Breaking Bad, he was so broke to the extent that he once contemplated planning his murder so his kids could get his life insurance money.

According to Variety, that thought came into the 65-year-old’s head sometime in 2008, but his life changed for the better as he shot into the limelight the following year – thanks to the television series. Esposito became a popular face for his portrayal of the antagonist Gustavo “Gus” Fring in Breaking Bad.

Esposito touched on arranging his murder when he was asked about how he bounced back after almost becoming bankrupt. “My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff,” he revealed.

“I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance. I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life. It was a hard moment in time. I literally thought of self-annihilation so they could survive. That’s how low I was.”

The actor, however, stated that he also thought about how his death would affect his children. “That was the first inkling that there was a way out, but I wouldn’t be here to be available to my kids,” he continued.

“Then I started to think that’s not viable because the pain I would cause them would be lifelong, and there’d be lifelong trauma that would just extend the generational trauma I’m trying to move away from. The light at the end of the tunnel was ‘Breaking Bad.’”

Esposito landed roles in Breaking Bad as well as its Better Call Saul prequel series. In a previous interview with British GQ, he also expressed his interest in appearing in another prequel series based on his character.

“Yeah, I would love that,” he said. “My backstory is he was a military guy who worked his way up through the ranks and could have become president, even possibly the dictator and have taken over. But he wanted to do something that could not be controlled by others, and he wanted to control his own destiny. And so he took off to create a new life for himself in America and become a meth dealer, a businessman.”

“I think, in his younger years, he was someone who could have been more Tony Montana,” Esposito added. “But he worked his way into becoming level enough to listen, hear, and see through his emotional state. We would hope that it might be ‘The Rise of Gus.’”

IMF warns Zimbabwe that its fragile economy hinges on tackling corruption

0

HARARE – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urging Zimbabwe to implement a series of reforms to tackle economic instability, with a strong focus on addressing corruption vulnerabilities as a key driver of sustainable growth.

The IMF delegation led by Wojciech Maliszewski has concluded a crucial mission to Zimbabwe, urging the government to implement significant economic reforms to address high inflation, currency instability, and unsustainable debt.

“Discussions covered policies to restore macroeconomic stability and improve growth prospects, focusing on addressing the sources of fiscal pressures including quasi-fiscal operations (QFOs) of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ); liberalizing the foreign exchange market and establishing an effective framework for exchange rate and monetary policies; and progressing on reforms to improve economic governance and reduce corruption vulnerabilities.

“Economic activity in Zimbabwe continues to show resilience despite major challenges,” said Maliszewski.

“However, this resilience is fragile and depends heavily on progress towards macroeconomic stabilisation and transformational structural reforms.”

The IMF estimates Zimbabwe’s GDP grew by 5.3% in 2023, driven by agriculture and mining. The growth is, however, expected to slow down in 2024 due to the El Niño induced drought and lower commodity prices.

While remittances are expected to remain strong, the mission noted that the ditched local currency (ZWL) had continued to experience significant depreciation, creating a wide gap with the parallel market rate.

“This instability weighs on business sentiment. Furthermore, exchange rate restrictions continue to burden the formal sector, promoting informality and eroding the tax base,” highlighted Maliszewski.

The IMF, however, commends the government’s commitment to address fiscal pressures. A key step is the transfer of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s (RBZ) external liabilities to the Treasury.

The mission warns that servicing these obligations will create a significant financing gap in the 2024 budget.

“Discussions focused on identifying ways to close this gap without resorting to inflationary financing.

“The mission encourages the authorities to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to address this challenge,” said Maliszewski.

The IMF also emphasises the need for a more market-driven approach to foreign exchange.

“We encourage the authorities to accelerate the FX market reform by promoting a transparent price discovery mechanism for the official exchange rate and removing existing restrictions,” Maliszewski urged.

“The 10% allowable trading margin for pricing domestic transactions should be eliminated to foster a more efficient market.”

Beyond currency reforms, the IMF stresses the importance of structural reforms to improve the business environment, strengthen governance, and reduce corruption.

“These reforms are essential for promoting sustained and inclusive growth, aligning with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (2021-2025),” stated Maliszewski.

The IMF is currently unable to provide financial support to Zimbabwe due to its unsustainable debt situation and outstanding arrears. However, the organisation said it remains committed to supporting Zimbabwe through policy advice and technical assistance in various areas.

“Securing an IMF financial arrangement will require a clear path to comprehensive debt restructuring, including clearing arrears and implementing reforms to ensure lasting macroeconomic stability, inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and robust economic governance,” Maliszewski concluded.

The mission believes that implementing the recommended reforms will be critical for stabilising the economy, attracting investment, and achieving sustainable growth and development.

In January this year, Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ) reported that Zimbabwe scored low on their latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI), indicating a perception of high corruption in the country.

Zimbabwe has scored 24/100 against the regional average of 33/100, suggesting that the country may have weaker legal systems and democratic institutions compared to other countries in the region.

The CPI scores countries on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating a stronger perception of transparency and accountability.

French police detain man at Iranian Consulate wearing fake explosives vest

0

A man was arrested by the police outside the Iranian Consulate in Paris on Friday. He was wearing a fake explosives vest and making dangerous threats. The police locked down the area to keep everyone safe. He didn’t have a clear reason.

The incident happened when things were already tense in the Middle East, and Paris is being extra careful because the Summer Olympics are coming soon.

The person was found guilty of starting a fire at the gates of the Iranian Embassy as a way to protest against the Iranian government. This information was given by the Paris prosecutor’s office. The consulate and embassy are in the same place in a fancy part of Paris near the Seine River.

Iranian officials did not say anything in public about what happened.

The man was seen at about 11 am outside the consulate. A person who saw him told the police that he had a grenade and a vest with explosives. This information was given by a Paris police official. The official did not want to give his name because it was against the police rules.

Highly trained police and soldiers blocked off the area and stopped traffic to make it safe.

The man reportedly made threats of violence inside the consulate, but then left the building by himself, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The police arrested him, but they didn’t find any weapons on him or in his car. The bomb vest was not real, the prosecutor’s office said.

The suspect has been caught by the police, and the Paris prosecutor’s office is looking into death threats. Investigators are trying to figure out why the person did what they did.

The police did not give the name of the person they suspect, but they said he was born in Iran in 1963.

The police knew about him and he got a punishment from the court for setting fire to car tires at the Iranian Embassy in Paris. According to the prosecutor’s office, he said it was a protest against the government of Iran.

The prosecutor said that the man cannot carry a weapon and is not allowed to go to the 16th arrondissement for two years. The sentence was put on hold because the defendant appealed.

2 mayoral contenders slain in Mexico, raising death toll to 17

0

Two people running for mayor in Mexico were killed on Friday, making it a total of 17 candidates killed before the June 2 election.

One person running for office was murdered on Friday in the border state of Tamaulipas in Mexico. Noe Ramos Ferretiz was running for a group that includes two political parties that used to rule Mexico until 2000. He was trying to get elected again as the mayor of the city of Ciudad Mante.

Another person who wanted to be the mayor in Oaxaca, a state in the south, was found dead after he went missing. Alberto Garcia was trying to become the mayor of San Jose Independencia, a town in Oaxaca.

The state’s lawyers in Oaxaca said they found Garcia’s body on an island in a lake near the town. It looks like he was killed by being hit. In the past, groups of people selling drugs were in the area.

The upcoming June 2 national elections are expected to be the most violent in the country’s history.

The prosecutors in Tamaulipas said Ramos Ferretiz was hurt on Friday, but they didn’t give many details and are still looking into what happened.

The news said that he got stabbed and shared pictures of a body covered in blood lying on the ground. Tamaulipas has been affected for a long time by fights over who controls the area between drug gangs. Ciudad Mante is in the south of the state, quite a distance from border cities like Reynosa and Matamoros.

“We won’t let violence influence the election,” wrote PRI party leader Alejandro Moreno on social media, where he confirmed the “cowardly murder” of Ramos Ferretiz.

In Oaxaca, the people in charge of elections are upset about the death of Garcia. He and his wife, who is the mayor of San Jose Independencia, disappeared earlier this week. The wife was discovered to be alive.

The electoral board said that Garcia was killed during the election, and they think that this should not happen during elections.

In the beginning of April, Bertha Gaytan, who was running for mayor, was shot and killed shortly after she asked for help and began her campaign. Gaytan was killed by a gun on a street in a town near Celaya, in the state of Guanajuato. She had just started her campaign to become the mayor of Celaya.

Drug gangs in Mexico try to kill mayors and people running for mayor so they can control the police and get money from the local government.

President Lopez Obrador said that drug cartels try to control who becomes mayor by either putting forward their own candidate or getting rid of their competition.

“They agree that this person will be the mayor and they don’t want anyone else to try to run for mayor. If anyone does, they know what will happen,” he said.

The government is giving bodyguards to 250 candidates because of recent murders. But, candidates running for local government positions are the most at risk and are the last to get protection.

Many politicians in Mexico are regularly targeted and harmed by violent acts. In April, the mayor of Churumuco, a town in Michoacan, was killed at a taco restaurant in Morelia.

In late February, two people running for mayor in a town in Michoacan were shot and killed within hours of each other.

Man dies after setting himself on fire outside of Trump’s Manhattan hush money trial

0

A man died after he burned himself outside the Manhattan court where former President Donald Trump‘s trial for hush-money is happening.

37-year-old Maxwell Azzarello poured liquid on himself and then threw conspiracy-theory papers into the air.

It happened after the jury was chosen for Mr. Trump’s trial was completed

He was really sick and had to go to the hospital on Friday. Sadly, he died later at the hospital. This was confirmed by CBS News, which is partners with the BBC in the US.

Donald Trump was at the building to pick people for the jury, and he had bodyguards with him. But he left while the trouble was happening.

The New York City police said on Saturday that Mr Azzarello was pronounced dead by hospital staff, according to NBC.

Security at the court was not broken during the incident on Friday, according to emergency officials. The trial, which had finished choosing the jury, started again in the afternoon. The first statements will start on Monday.

Investigators got a 911 call at 1:30 pm saying that a man set himself on fire.

They found out his name is Maxwell Azzarello, and he came to New York from Florida last week. He is 37 years old. He didn’t do anything wrong in New York, and his family in Florida didn’t know he went there.

New York Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said Mr Azzarello was seen walking around in the park and then taking out a flammable liquid and some pamphlets from a bag.

Chief Maddrey said that the pamphlets were spreading propaganda and conspiracy theories.

There were a lot of police outside the courthouse because of the trial, and they quickly ran into the park yelling for a fire extinguisher. Mr Azzarello was taken on a stretcher because his body was badly burned. The police said he was brought to a special hospital for burn injuries and he is in very bad condition.

Julie Berman told reporters: “It was really hot and didn’t make much sense. ” It all happened really quickly. It took me about 20 seconds to understand what was happening.

NYPD investigators picked up brochures that Mr. Azzarello had dropped before setting himself on fire. They have said that the area is safe.

The police are still talking to people who saw what happened. They said the person who set himself on fire didn’t seem to say anything before doing it.

Three police officers and one court officer got hurt a little while putting out the fire.

Authorities stated they will now review the safety measures outside the court.

Curious Ramaphosa play in Great Lakes as South Africa elections loom

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is visibly torn between two forces in his intervention in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At home, he faces a crucial election next month that will test the ability of the ruling African National Congress’s stranglehold on power.

Yet his country is also leading the Southern African Development Community Mission in Congo (SAMIDRC), deployed in the east of the DRC to combat rebel groups, principally the M23.

The South African head of state is now preaching a search for peace through political and diplomatic negotiations in the war between the M23 and Kinshasa.

While in Kigali to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, Ramaphosa spoke of the virtue of political dialogue in the Great Lakes conflict, a possible change of tack that may reflect the realities on the ground.

That came as a surprise to many in the DRC.

“This contrasts with his firm stance expressed during his participation in the last African Union summit [last February],” Christopher Ngoyi, a Congolese civil society leader close to the government in the DRC said.

“For Congolese civil society, Ramaphosa’s call for negotiations is a major U-turn.”

Ngoyi has strongly criticised the South African president, while the Congolese authorities have kept a cautious and modest silence on that position. As part of the SADC force in the DRC, South Africa has deployed 2,900 soldiers alongside Tanzanian and Malawian contingents. The SAMIDRC replaced the East African Regional Force in December.

In the minds of Congo authorities, the aim was to have an offensive force to take the place of the EACRF, which the Congolese criticised for not fighting the rebels.

“SAMIDRC is different,” declared then Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lutundula in March. “SADC troops support the DRC. Ask the Congolese soldiers, they’ll tell you.”

The Congolese minister was confident: “In the coming days, you will see what happens. It’s not like those who arrived here, the EACRF, who as soon as they landed in Goma started saying that we didn’t come to fight; we came to be a buffer force and started negotiating with the M23. SAMIDRC won’t do that.”

Recent communication from the SADC suggests that the mission is under a certain amount of political pressure.

Will Ramaphosa’s new approach have an impact on the behaviour of troops in the theatre of operations?

On Tuesday, he got to Uganda, where he held talks with President Yoweri Museveni. Like most of the region’s leaders, the Ugandan president had already proposed in July 2022 that the war in the DRC be resolved once and for all.

“My proposal for resolving this problem completely is this: put in place a ceasefire, no more fighting, then we will find a solution.”

The South African president later visited South Sudan where he met with President Salva Kiir.

Now the fighting is raging, and no one is really talking about a ceasefire anymore.

Attempts to reactivate the peace talks are currently without any convincing results. Just a while ago, in February and March, the chairperson of the East African Community, President Salva Kiir, undertook a tour in search of peace in the region and visited Kigali, Bujumbura, Kinshasa and Luanda on the debacle in the DRC, where he was received by President João Lourenço, who is leading the talks between Rwanda and the DRC.

Virtually all the leaders have stated that they wish to resume the dialogue that has now broken down. President Salva Kiir returned to Juba. And it was in this city that he received President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday. The two men again discussed the thorny issue of the search for peace in the region and its elusive contours.

Meet Tunde Onakoya: The Nigerian who has broken chess marathon world record

Under the beaming lights of New York’s iconic Times Square, Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya has broken the record for the longest chess marathon.

After playing for 58 consecutive hours he was still at the board.

Onakoya hopes to raise $1m (£805,000) for charity to support chess education for millions of children.

Hundreds of supporters from the city’s Nigerian community have shown up to cheer on the chess master, including Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido.

They provided music and energised him with supplies of classic Nigerian dishes, including the beloved national staple, jollof rice.

Back home in Nigeria, people threw their support behind Onakoya as they watched him conquer the record on Twitch, a video-streaming service.

Supporters left messages on the stream commending Onakoya as an inspiration.

“Thank you for daring to dream and showing us the levels to which we can all take our brain power to! Well done Tunde! I’m going to pick up my chess board back haha,” one commenter wrote.

“Mr Onakoya is a symbol of excellence and resilience that distinguish Nigerians both at home and abroad… Go, make history, and inscribe our name in gold,” Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima posted on X.

“Lagos is rooting for you,” Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu told Onakoya, adding that his attempt was “a powerful testament to how greatness can emerge from anywhere”.

The previous world record, recognised by Guinness World records, was 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds, which was set by Norwegian duo Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018.

Onakoya, 29, credits chess with saving him from the overwhelming poverty he faced growing up in Lagos’s infamous floating slums.

His non-profit, Chess in Slums Africa, teaches the game to children from poor communities and helps them with their education.

Onakoya is also a board member of the US non-profit The Gift of Chess, which works to transform lives through chess and is targeting to distribute one million chess sets to underserved communities by 2030.

Drake Reacts To A.I. Kendrick Lamar Diss Not Knowing It’s Fake

0

Kendrick Lamar has yet to respond to Drake‘s “Push Ups” diss, however, this did not stop an eager fan from imagining what the track would sound like. According to Complex, a song credited to the Compton, Calif. rapper targeting his Canadian peer surfaced online, however, the lyrics and vocal performance are generated by artificial intelligence.

The track was confirmed to be a fake by Daylyt, musician, and close associate of the DAMN rapper. Additionally, NFR Podcast sources claim an authentic response is on the way.

“Ps that’s 10000% ai,” Daylyt shared on X.

Still, Drake and his camp responded to the diss on social media, although it was confirmed to be AI-generated. OVO Hush shared a post on Instagram critiquing the song’s quality and the chart-topping pop star dropped a laughing emoji on the upload.

“When you find out this is real, don’t forget how trash it was as an AI,” wrote Hush, alleging that the diss was the work of Kendrick Lamar. Online personality DJ Akademiks shared the upload and the “Hotline Bling” performer’s comment via screenshot on his own Instagram.

While laughing at K. Dot’s alleged diss, Drake himself was also the subject of fake music. A song titled “Hi Whitney,” said to be the follow-up to “Push-Ups” made rounds throughout the internet, with Drake credited as the performer.

The “One Dance” singer confirmed to DJ Akademiks that the diss was fake.

“He did hit me,” detailed Akademiks. “I guess when I was playing that ‘Hi Whitney’ sht, he said that’s A.I. He said 100% A.I. So, I’m gonna take his word, but I ain’t gonna lie to you. That sht is slick… That’s really the Drake bag I want him to get into. It’s not necessarily that track. That’s the bag I want him to get into. The slick talk but direct talk over some smooth beat.”

While fans await an official response from the good kid m.A.A.d. city rhymer, they can enjoy Rick Ross’ jabs at “Drizzy Drake.” Over the weekend, the Miami representative released the fiery “Champagne Moments” online, and on Monday night (April 15), the track was officially released to streaming platforms.

The viral diss record is produced by Mini Boom, the 16-year-old son of son of director Benny Boom. In “Champagne Moments,” the 48-year-old targets Drake’s appearance, business practices, and more. Take a listen below.-VIBE

Simone Biles ‘Broke Down’ When Internet Critics Told Her To Divorce Husband After Viral Interview

0

Simone Biles’ husband, Jonathan Owens, landed unexpectedly in some hot water in December after he interviewed with The Pivot Podcast and said he didn’t know who she was when they first met. The new Chicago Bears safety also stated that he was “the catch,” and Biles fans weren’t having it.

The 27-year-old four-time Olympic gold medalist recently talked about how the interview going viral made her feel on the April 17 episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.

The most decorated gymnast began by reminding people that she was in the room while Owens did the interview. “I was like, ‘My man just killed that,’” she joked, referring to how he handled the conversation with the podcast’s hosts.

“So, whenever he did that interview, I thought everything was OK. And then I go on Twitter, and everybody’s like, ‘Divorce this man, he’s mean.’ I’m like, he’s the sweetest. He praises the ground that I walk on. Truly, I’ve never met a man like him,” she said.

She also wanted to clear up the NFL player’s statement about him being the catch since that particular quip left a bad taste in people’s mouths.

“He never said I wasn’t a catch. He said he was a catch because he is,” she explained. “I’ve never met a man like him. A lot of people that meet him are like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want a man like that,’” she said.

The sports star didn’t understand why his comments went viral and where all the hate came from, but she concluded it could have been because she wasn’t an actual part of the interview despite being in the room.

Article continues after video.
“He has to have his moments too and I let him have it,” she said. “It’s like, this is his moment. That’s his interview. What was I supposed to interrupt that interview and be like, ‘Hey, da da da’?” she added.

The public outrage initially tickled Biles, but the laughter soon transitioned to tears because people were attacking her spouse.

“So I thought it was hilarious at first and then they hurt my feelings,” she said. “One night, I broke down and I’m like, why are you guys talking about my husband like this? You don’t know him, you don’t know who he is, and if anybody’s met him, they know he’s the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody.”

Before Owens’ interview, they were a beloved couple fans admired, but that quickly went left post-interview.

“…That really hurt that they were talking about my husband like that because for me, it’s like, talk about me all you want, but don’t come from my family. Never,” she concluded.

Biles and Owens have been married since April 22, 2023, when they first tied the knot at a courthouse in Houston. They followed that up with a destination wedding celebration in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in May of 2023. Their courtship began in 2020, and they met through a dating app.- Essenc

Aisha detailed their experience on the short-lived MTV show Married Life After Prison.

In a 2002 interview with Blender, the rapper shared the benefits of marrying your high school sweetheart.

“The best thing is that y’all know each other. She knows Jeffrey Atkins, not Ja Rule,” he said.

Congratulations to the couple, and cheers to another 23 years!

Shaq Tells Fans Upset About Pay Disparities Between NBA and WNBA to Go Buy the Women’s League’s Tickets and Merchandise

0

Retired professional basketball player and businessman Shaquille O’Neal says there is a way that fans can have an impact on the pay disparity between the WNBA and the NBA: Support with your dollars.

The Los Angeles Laker understands that contracts are distributed based on returns on each of the franchise’s investments and the hard truth about women’s basketball is that up until recently sports fans typically don’t care to see female ballers over their male counterparts. They also don’t support in ticket sales, merch and in other ways.

Money Talks
“This was the first time in my career that I woke up and wanted to watch women and not really care about the men,” Shaq admitted, adding his two cents in on the pay inequity conversation, “I saw the young ladies’ salaries leaked online and people are in an uproar. It’s now time for people to start supporting the women like they support the men.”

Adding, “It’s all about the economics. We can pay our guys these crazy contracts because we generate a lot of money. So now that there’s excitement behind Caitlin [Clark] and Angel [Reese], make sure you go and support them.”

WNBA Salaries
In 2020, the average salaries in the WNBA were about $80,000, and the league’s total payroll was about $12.5 million.

That payroll is sustained, as indicated by sports journalist David Berri, through the league’s television deal with ESPN and ABC, alongside its minimum ticket prices. Berri estimates that the league may have secured $60 million in annual revenue, with WNBA players receiving about 20 percent of league revenue.

In the same year, the players successfully negotiated a stronger Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which boosted average salaries to approximately $130,000 and total league payroll to around $20.3 million. If revenues remained at $60 million, then following the implementation of the new CBA, players were receiving approximately 34 percent of league revenue. In contrast, NBA players, who typically enjoy greater star power, receive 50 percent of the league’s basketball-related revenue.

Despite those negotiations, in 2024, college basketball star Caitlin Clark will earn just under $77,000 in her rookie WNBA season, whereas the top male NBA draft pick will earn more than $10 million.

Her starting salary with the Indiana Fever will be $76,535 and earn roughly $338,000 over the four-year contract she signed with the Fever.

The second, third, and fourth picks in this year’s draft will also earn $76,535 in their first year, as stipulated by the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

The base annual pay for all four athletes will experience only a modest increase over the next few years — $78,066 in 2025, $85,873 in 2026, and $97,582 in 2027.

The 15-time All-Star said that there is a way to help the female players to be compensated better.

“Buy the jerseys, buy the tickets, show up at the games,” he said.

“The more money that they make the more money they will be able to make,” the businessman, who has an estimated net worth of $500 million, said, “It’s a great turnaround for the ladies, but now, time for the people to really start supporting.”- Finurah

While this is Ashanti’s first pregnancy, partner Nelly, 49, has two adult children, Chanelle, 30, and Cornell Haynes III, 25, with his ex Channetta Valentine. He adopted his niece and nephew, Shawn and Sydney Thomas, following the death of his sister Jackie Donahue.

Ashanti announced her pregnancy on Instagram, promoting their fertility diagnostics company Proov with a video capturing a heartwarming moment with her mother, Tina Douglas, asking “how much time do you need?.”

Ashanti takes an early pregnancy test from Proov, emerging with a swab in hand, quipping, “I’m going to need about nine months.”

She captioned the post: “Baby baby baby baby….” with a red heart, prayer hands, and silly emoji.

Ashanti and Nelly co-own Proov with founder Amy Beckley, PhD. Proov is a company offering affordable fertility diagnostics and treatment at home. Their partnership was revealed in an interview with Essence. The couple, who rekindled their romance last year after a decade-long split, sparked pregnancy rumors in December at Nelly’s 11th Black and White Ball at the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis, according to Daily Mail. A source later confirmed to Us Weekly that they are “welcoming their first baby together.”

Their reconciliation was confirmed by Nelly in September during an interview with Love and Hip Hop stars Rasheeda and Kirk Frost.

“Yeah, we cool again,” he gushed when asked if they had rekindled their romance.

The performer continued: “I think it surprised both of us though. It wasn’t anything that I don’t think was planned.”

Nelly noted that their time apart has helped their reunion given that it provided space for understanding each other and their relationship more deeply.

He explained: “I think we both were pretty much doing what we do, but sometimes being separate you understand one another more.

“You be like, ‘Yo, let me see exactly what they see.’ You know, because we all can be defensive sometimes in our own relationships. We know we wrong but we going to stand on it. But we all a victim to that.”

Ashanti and Nelly’s happiness now stems from the fact that their current relationship feels positive and pressure-free.

Nelly added: “Before I felt like both of us were doing what we were doing before career-wise, and when you got so many people in the middle of it, it can be tough.”

Rumors of Ashanti and Nelly rekindling their romance surfaced when they were spotted together in Las Vegas in March 2023. A week later, they further fueled speculation by attending a 40th birthday celebration for businessman Jon Schwartz as a couple.

I applaud President HH for his patriotism and his respectful acknowledgment of Chitimukulu and Litunga- Frank Mutubila

Frank Mutubila writes;

President Hakainde Hichilema’s dedication to promoting unity in Zambia through traditional ceremonies is truly admirable. Despite facing threats and challenges, he courageously accepted the responsibility of attending the Kuomboka Ceremony, demonstrating his resolve and leadership. By acknowledging the significance of events like Kuomboka in fostering national unity and celebrating diversity, he exemplifies the qualities of a leader committed to bringing people together.

His engagement with traditional leaders, while also ensuring the safety of all involved, showcases his leadership and respect for cultural traditions.

I applaud President Hakainde Hichilema for his patriotism and his respectful acknowledgment of the Paramount Chief of the Bemba Royal Establishment, Chitimukulu, and the hosting Chief of the Lozi people, the Litunga.

Wishing the Lozi people a joyous and memorable Kuomboka traditional ceremony.

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu accepts Challenge to have Lozi-Bemba Tribal Cousinship

Easterners have competition as Chitimukulu embraces Lozi-Bemba tribal cousinship

IT seems Easterners will now have to settle on being the second favourite cousins of the Bemba people for today as paramount chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people has accepted the challenge to establish a Lozi-Bemba tribal cousinship.

This new romance was announced during the prestigious 2024 Kuomboka Ceremony this morning.

Mwine Lubemba emphasised the importance of this move in further solidifying the longstanding relationship between the Lozi and Bemba communities.

Bembas have been known to have a thriving tribal counsinship with Easterners but today they upgrade from the relationship from Mbeba to Hopani and from Bicycle to Boat.

The relationship will boast of sharing similar traits in terms of food such as Cassava and Fish.

This decision comes in light of Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II’s attendance at the Ukusefya pa N’gwena Traditional Ceremony in 2023, a gesture that was well-received by the Bemba people.

“Aba Bemba gathered today at this habour, accept the Lozi challenge to a Bemba – Lozi tribal cousinship,” stated Chitimukulu who graced this year’s Kuomboka ceremony as guest of honour.

And Induna Imangambwa, representing the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE), extended gratitude to the people of Western Province for their warm welcome extended to Chitimukulu and his delegation

K350,000 EACH KWACHA TOILETS A SMELLY SCANDAL-MUNDUBILE

0

Lusaka-Saturday, 20 April 2024

BRIAN Mundubile, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament is perplexed at President Hakainde Hichilema´s decision to endorse makeshift toilets in Kitwe’s Kwacha Township allegedly built at an exorbitant cost of K350, 000 each.

Mr Mundibile believes that the cost of the Kwacha toilets was highly exaggerated, stating that a probe should be instituted to establish the cost of the small toilets that has raised media stench in the country.

Mr Mundubile has challenged President Hichilema and his team to justify how an estimated 2×4 metres toilet could possibly cost more money than a modest two bedroomed house with a toilet and bathroom included.

“Anyone who has built a modest two or three bedroomed house will confirm to you that the cost is about K300, 000 total to complete the house with everything in it,” Mr Mundubile said.

He asked, “How then can a small toilet with cheap doors and roofing sheets cost more than a two to three bedroomed house? Something is terribly wrong here and it’s sad President Hichilema has allowed himself to be caught into this brewing toilet scandal.”

Mr Mundubile, who is also Patriotic Front (PF) Mporokoso Member of Parliament reminded Mr Hichilema that while in opposition, he was the biggest critic on cost of construction of roads, airports, and bridges under President Edgar Lungu which he said were ´overpriced´ and sub-standard in quality.

“He (President Hichilema) has always been speaking against our construction projects calling them overpriced and not durable and not built on time. But look at his toilets…this is shameful, and reflects badly on the President,” Mundubile said.

Cornelius Mweetwa, the government chief spokesman recently threatened the privately owned KBNTV for discussing the questionable standards of the toilets and the rationale behind taking the President to launch them when that could have been done by a councillor.

But Mr Mundubile has warned President Hichilema that when he is no longer in office, uncomfortable questions will be asked on how he could endorse certain projects such as the toilets and the continued disposal (stripping) of state assets such as mines.

The 1,600 toilets, multiplied by K350, 000 each, have raised an engineering smell´ in the Zambian media and political arena, prompting critics to suggest that there was corruption in the tendering process.

Mr Mundubile said, “How else can you explain the amount for a one room toilet? Maybe Mr Mweetwa has an answer to this question since he has answers to everything.”

President Hichilema wants to use the toilets as a tool to fight cholera that has killed hundreds of Zambians recently.

It Is Unfair For Government To Only Pay Artists Who Belong To The Ruling Party While Other Artists Are Made To Wait For Almost A Year- B Flow

By B Flow
IT IS UNFAIR FOR GOVERNMENT TO ONLY PAY ARTISTS WHO BELONG TO THE RULING PARTY WHILE OTHER ARTISTS ARE MADE TO WAIT FOR ALMOST A YEAR.

The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts is owing money to various music artists who provided entertainment services at last year’s Agricultural and Commercial Show. The ministry hired musicians to perform at the Show in what was viewed as a quest to support Zambian music, but now it is clear that the intent was to use artists to make the ministry look good in the eyes of the public and music consumers. We wish to categorically state that we are deeply disturbed to learn that performance fees for artists who support the ruling party who performed at the same event have been cleared while the rest of the artists have been waiting for more than 8 months. The artists have knocked on the ministry’s door severally, but their efforts have not yielded any results. Some of them have been calling and sending messages to the people in charge but they have either been blue-ticked or told ‘one of the signatories is not around’ or “we are working on it”.

Partiality and unfairness will not develop the entertainment industry. It seems the ministry is citing lack of funds as the reason for not paying the affected artists, but is widely believed that some of the artists who have not been paid are viewed as supporters of the former ruling party. The question is why did you request for their services in the first place if you knew there was no money to pay them within the legally stipulated period? How possible is it that an event can be organized without a budget? Could it be that the Ministry of Arts just wanted to use these artists and ride on their upbeat music to make the show look good or was this just a way to punish them for not being openly affiliated to the party in power? If so, why the vindictiveness? Stop politicizing the arts sector and let entertainers thrive in their talents. These kinds of frustrations have the propensity to derail artists from focusing on their creativity, as they are forced to worry about how they will pay their bills when they are not getting paid for their craft. Pay the artists for their services and stop punishing them for political reasons.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) is proving to be a toothless body at the moment. ZAM has not helped these artists be remunerated for the entertainment services government contracted them to provide. It is sad to see the Association dancing to the tune of politicians when we all know that politicians will run to artists for help when it is time to campaign for votes. We are following this matter closely and we hope the government will pay the artists what is owed to them.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA CALLS FOR PEACE, UNITY DURING KUOMBOKA

President Hakainde Hichilema has called for peace and unity during the 2024 Kuomboka Traditional Ceremony of the Lozi people in Mongu Western Province.

President Hichilema says he has respect for traditional leaders, as they are custodians of heritage.

President Hichilema who said this in Mongu, when he held a rally, upon his arrival at Mongu Airport, says, his administration remains committed to fulfilling its promises of delivering development to all parts of the country.

And President Hichilema says his government is on a journey to do what is good for the country.

President Hichilema says it is the reason that while in opposition, he travelled across the country to understand the challenges being faced by the people, which he said is being addressed.

” As part of our mobilisation process, we traveled across the country, all 10 provinces, we saw how people were living in our country and understand the challenges, such as children who were supposed to be in school, but were not in school,” he said.

“I have been to Kuomboka for over 30 years because culture is important, we respect Mwine Lubemba, we respect the Litunga and all traditional leaders including headmen, they are custodian of heritage,” the Head of State explained.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same event, Western Province Minister, Kapelwa Mbangweta said the people of Western Province appreciate the works that President Hichilema and his government is undertaking to improve the livelihood of the people.

“So, there is no need why they should not embrace you. They appreciate how their taxes are being used.

“you have completed the road to Limulunga, K47 million was invested in cattle vaccination in the province while 22 secondary schools have been given to this region this year, what people want is development,” he said.

The Head of State is in Mongu for a three-day working visit, where he is expected to engage in a number of activities, including meeting the leaders of the church and other Faith Based Organisations (FBOs).

President Hichilema, this Saturday, 20th April, will be among many, to attend the 2024 Kuomboka Ceremony.

LET KUOMBOKA BE A MOMENT OF UNITING THE NATION BEYOND WORDS-Hon Sunday Chanda

0

LET KUOMBOKA BE A MOMENT OF UNITING THE NATION BEYOND WORDS

Great mottos, creeds, visions and plans — are all only of any use, if a people genuinely and collectively resolve to implement them. This applies to our “One Zambia. One Nation” national principle.

If we only enunciate a motto through lofty pronouncements and prior to main news headlines; yet, without consistent, concrete and genuine corresponding actions — then, we are only deluding ourselves as a society. If we were to act in this way, unfortunately, — truth be told — we would risk becoming a nation of self-deluded citizens. With that, our aspirations in national building and development would no longer be attainable. For the simple reason that a nation of self-deluded citizens cannot effectively play the role of the sort of agents to spur cultural, economic and social renewal and development.

Recognizing the foregoing as key; since 2016, the Republican President in Zambia is required to address the National Assembly as provided for in Article 9(2) of the Zambian constitution which demands that the President addresses the Nation on the progress made towards the application of National Values and Principles found in article 8, among these are: Morality, Patriotism and Unity, Democracy and Constitutionalism, Human Dignity, Equity, Social Justice, Equality and Non-Discrimination, Good Governance and Integrity, and Sustainable Development. All this, in order to ensure that the Nation moves towards – not away – from being truly a united People summarized in our national motto: “One Zambia. One Nation”.

It is therefore from a nationalist perspective that I strongly commend, as should all citizens of good will, the emerging renewal and developments in national unity and nation building that transcends tribe and region; which has been typified by the Mwine Lubemba Chitimukulu when he hosted the His Majesty the Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II as the Guest of Honour during Ukusefya pa Ngw’ena — and now, the Litunga bestowing the same honour on the Chitimukulu. The message that these eminent Royal Highnesses are sending all citizens and leaders — political, traditional and others – is, among others, that what “unites us is greater that what and who (seek to) divide us.”

The spirit and actions of the Chitimukulu and the Litunga should, therefore, be emulated by all leaders, both traditional and political. This is important beyond its symbolic importance, because our very aspiration as a nation to achieve our high Vision 2030 aspiration to become “A prosperous middle-income country by 2030”, depends on our collective actions to be united.

This is so because Zambia’s long term development blueprint and vision, the Vision 2030, states in this regard that: Zambia “should have stable social and cultural systems that support human capital formation. Among other things, the nation Zambians aspire for, should be characterized as follows: ‘A common and shared destiny, united in diversity, equitably integrated and democratic in governance, promoting patriotism and ethnic integration’”, among other things.

We can all learn from the Latin maxim (which has since been adopted as an official motto by various Nations and at local-state government level in some countries): “E pluribus unum”, meaning “Out of many, one.” In our own context, “‘Out of the many 20 or so million Zambians’, ‘One.’”

Evidently, any calls to disunity, politicization, and trivializing the current efforts by the Royal Highnesses, is like sowing seeds of division. Let all politicians including His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema, Opposition leaders, and others take their respectful places at this year’s Kuomboka Ceremony as sons and daughters of the soil. Those politicizing attendance are therefore offside.

We have a common and shared destiny. We are one Zambia, One Nation, One People. Let us therefore, as citizens of this great Republic, embrace and invoke the spirit of Ubuntu, Patriotism, national interests first-and-only, Unity in diversity and ethnic integration.

I now wish the great and wonderful Lozi people of Barotseland greatest joy and success as they celebrate our shared cultural heritage and a key tourist attraction — the Kuomboka ceremony.

My mom wished you were dead’ – Taylor Swift seemingly slams Kim Kardashian

0

Taylor Swift surprised fans once more as she dropped a surprise second bodywork of songs at 2 a.m. on Friday, April 19 making “The Tortured Poets Department” a secret double album.

In one song, “Thank you aIMee,” her fans known as Swifties were quick to point out that the capitalized letters spelled out a certain name — Kim.

Swift often hides words in her lyrics via capitalization, and this tune in particular slams a certain person that she compares to a high school bully with Swifties speculating the song is about Kim Kardashian.

There’s a “bronze spray-tanned statue” of “Aimee” with a “plaque underneath it that threatens to push me down the stairs at our school,” she sings as she describes her hometown.

“All that time you were throwin’ punches, I was buildin’ somethin’ / And I can’t forgive the way you made me feel / Screamed ‘F—k you, Aimee’ to the night sky, as the blood was gushing.’ But I can’t forget the way you made me heal.”

She goes on to note it was never a “fair fight” or a “clean kill” between the two and describes the unnamed person as “stomping across” her “grave.”

Also, Swift refers to her mother, Andrea Swift, noting: “Everyone knows that my mother is as a saintly woman / But she used to say she wished that you were dead.”

Despite their ongoing feud, Kardashian has previously noted she listens to Swift, 34. In “thanK you aIMee,” Swift concludes: “And one day, your kid comes home singin’ a song that only us two is gonna know is about you.”

Kardashian and ex-husband Kanye West share North, 10, Saint, 8, Chicago, 6, and Psalm, 4.

Swift’s issue with Kanye and his ex-wife began with the rapper’s infamous 2009 interruption of Swift’s acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards, and continued in 2016 when West released the song “Famous.” In the song, he rapped the line, “I feel like I and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that bitch famous” and claimed that Swift had consented to the lyrics.

After Swift denied this, Kardashian released a recording of a conversation which seemed to indicate that Swift was lying and had given the couple the go-ahead. Kardashian also implied Swift was a “snake.”

In an interview with Time commemorating Swift being named 2023’s Person of the Year, Swift called the feud a “bleak” moment and claimed she fled to “a foreign country” where she “didn’t leave a rental house for a year.”

“I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore,” she revealed. “I went down really, really hard.”

In 2019, Kardashian said on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” that the feud had ended, but the full phone exchange between West and Swift was released one year later — seemingly revealing Swift was telling the truth.

“The video showed nothing new. We all knew that. I’m so confused right now,” Kardashian tweeted at the time.

Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro amid dipped form this season

0

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has come to the defence of Casemiro amidst criticism over his recent form.

After a subpar showing in the team’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, Casemiro faced intense scrutiny, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp drawing comparisons between his performance and that of a participant in Soccer Aid.

This dip in form follows a series of injuries that sidelined him for three months this season, leading to backlash from fans.

Despite the setbacks, Ten Hag remains steadfast in his belief in Casemiro’s capabilities and told reporters, “We needed a six when I arrived here and last season he was fantastic. I don’t think he had ever scored so many goals but as a holding midfielder, he was so important to the team.

This season he has struggled with a bad injury that he never had in his career but he is such a winner—all his career, he has always won. Everywhere he was, there was success. And I trust he will also bring us success. I know he needs games and he will be better. I am very confident about him, he is a fighter, which is why he has won big trophies. He has a personality and is a very important player.”

Casemiro has a memorable history at Wembley, notably scoring the opening goal against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final back in February 2023.

This performance earned him the Man of the Match award and helped secure the trophy for United.

Drawing on this example, Ten Hag made sure to highlight Casemiro’s significant contributions in crucial matches, emphasising that he remains an indispensable figure at the club.

“In that game—and not just that game but also in qualifying for the Champions League—he was such an important factor,” said Ten Hag. “He made a difference.”

Casemiro will have the opportunity to make amends as United face Coventry on Sunday.

This match holds significant importance for the Red Devils, offering them the chance to progress to the final and secure silverware in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign.

HH is servant leader who takes the lowest seat at the Banquet Table – Nevers Mumba

  • He does not bellitle the Presidency by Commissioning sanitary project of flushable toilets.

As Bemba speaking people we are honored to have our Paramount Chief Chitimukulu honored to play the role of guest of honor at this year’s Kuomboka. We however advise that no politician should attempt to use the name of our traditional leader in their political fight against the Republican President. Chief Chitimukulu feels honored to be at the same event with his host His Majesty the Litunga and the President of the Republic of Zambia.

The President can visit any part of Zambia with or without a special invitation. President Hichilema should not think twice about both his right and obligation to attend events of national significance like the Kuomboka Ceremony.
He should not pay any attention to any politically inclined special groups trying to intimidate him out of attending the cultural event of the Lozi people of Barotseland. He is the President of the Sovereign Republic of Zambia of which Western Province is a part of.

The argument that the President should not attend the Kuomboka Ceremony because he has not been invited as Guest of Honor exposes the root of both ignorance and the nature of the current Zambian toxic politics.

The President cannot be a guest of honor for every event he attends. If the President attends our Victory Bible Church, he should do so because he wants to come and share in our worship. He needs no special invitation. He doesn’t have to come as a guest of honor.

The politicians who are raising this issue come from the old fading school of the all powerful, all controlling Presidency. This is a new season of a servant leader President. Who takes the lowest seat at the banquet as the scriptures teach us.

This is the same argument being raised by those claiming that President Hichilema is belittling the Presidency by Commissioning the sanitary project of flushable toilets. They believe he should only commission big shiny projects attended by the rich serving the interests mostly of the rich.

A new flushable toilet to a poor man in the compound who uses a dangerously built pit latrine is equivalent to commissioning a newly tarred road for those who drive. The president is a president of both the rich and the poor. Humility is to do those small things that mean much to those who need them.

Finally, to the police, we advise that you not be heavy handed in your quest to maintain order at this very important national event.

Let us celebrate this historic event under the umbrella of our national banner of “ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION.”

“I fainted three times after learning that Rainford Kalaba had an affair with my wife”- Boyd Mukandawire

I paid dowry to Charlene’s mother but I am still praying for Kalaba – Boyd

FORMER Kabwe Warriors player Boyd Mukandawire says the late Charlene Mumba was his wife even at the time of her death and and that he is praying for wellbeing of Rainford Kalaba.

Charlene Mumba died in a road traffic accident last Saturday and was buried in Lusaka yesterday.

Charlene died on the spot of the mishap in Kafue after the Mercedes Benz she was driving collided with a truck head-on.

Chipolopolo star Rainford Kalaba who is owner of the Benz and was on board at the time of the accident was critically injured and has been admitted to the University Teaching Hospital since.

After burial yesterday, a Charlene’s sister Jennifer Lwanga said Boyd had never married been married tonher younger sibling.

“My sister Charlene had never been married to Boyd, no dowry was ever paid to the family although she had two sons with him. That’s why you never heard that she was married in her life history because truly my sister Charlene was never married to Boyd Mkandawire,” Lwanga explained.

“So unlike the false social media rumours, my sister was neither married nor divorced with Boyd. Yes they fell in love at some point and even had kids, but they were never married not even traditionally,” added Lwanga.

But in an interview this morning, Boyd said he was shocked that Charlene’s family could say there was no marriage when he had even paid dowry.

Boyd said he married Charlene in 2014 and had been charged K20,000 as dowry out of which he paid a down payment of K12,000.

“She was my wife. We got married in 2014 when she was still learning at Arakan School in G12, I just paid dowry to her mother and we started staying together,” said Boyd.

“We never separated with my wife, the reason she went to say that side in Chilenje was because it was near the hotel she was working, we thought that in Emmasdel, we would only be wasting a lot of money and she carried our eldest son Boyd because it could be easier to prepare him for school,” Body told kalemba.

The 27-year old explained that at no point did he divorce Charlene or send her packing from their matrimonial home.

He told Kalemba that while Charlene was at her mother’s place, he communicated with her regularly as husband and wife and nothing seemed wrong.

Boyd said he had no idea that Charlene was having an affair with Kalaba whom he regarded as his elder brother until the day of the accident.

He revealed that her death came as double shock to him as he also came to discover that she was also cheating on him with a man he regarded as a mentor and elder brother.

“I regarded Kalaba as my elder brother, I don’t feel myself right now, I can’t lie to you because leaving my children orphaned like that, who is going to be taking care of them now. My wife is no more and I blame both of them but I will continue to regard Kalaba as my Elder brother… So as for now I cant say he is not my elder brother despite the situation and I wish him a quick recovery, in fact am praying he gets well soon.

“I Just got shocked after finding out I cant lie, you just don’t know how I was feeling, I fainted three times at home,” Boyd revealed.

On his absence from the Charlene’s funeral, Boyd explained that his family had advised him to stay away.

“When the funeral just happened, I went and I was at the funeral house for two days but I was not treated well and then I also discovered all those Tiktok videos of my wife so my family asked me to stay away, he said.

Boyd said after burial yesterday, he paid the remainder of K8,000 for Charlene’s dowry

ALEBWELELAPO GROUP COMMITS TO PAY KALANDANYA DEBT

ALEBWELELAPO GROUP COMMITS TO PAY KALANDANYA DEBT

EDGAR Lungu’s faction of the PF has committed to dealing with the former ruling party’s debts saying they would not leave such a responsibility to Miles Sampa whose leadership they have rejected.

In an interview with Kalemba, Secretary General of the Lungu faction, Raphael Nakacinda indicated that his group would scrutinize the contract that was entered into between the national chairman and businessman Bwalya Kalandanya for 70 alebwelelapo anthems at K13.5 million, prior to the 2021 general election and establish whether contractual obligations were met.

Early this week High Court Judge Charles Zulu ordered the PF to pay Kalandanya K13.5 million for the 70 campaign songs which were composed by a musical ensemble in the likes of JK, Yo Maps, Dandy Crazy, Macky 2, Mampi among others under his record label Kalandanya music promotions.

The Alebwelelapo anthems were aimed at luring the masses into re-electing Lungu.

The Court’s judgement sparked debates within the PF on who was going to settle the debt between the two groups led by Lungu and Sampa with most of the proposing that Sampa honors the contractual obligations.

The proposal did not sit well with Sampa who washed his hands off the debt saying the lyrics of the Alebwelelapo anthems did not have his name.

However Nakacinda indicated that as far as his team was concerned all services rendered to the party for advertisements and campaign songs were paid for and all outstanding debts were cleared.

“We are aware that matters to do with obligation whether to do with musicians and all that were settled.

On this particular issue the party is trying to do due diligence. I think there was a letter of demand and other processes that are yet to be looked at,” he said.

“As you may be aware Honorable Davies Mwila is appearing before Court over party funding and payments that were made to media houses, musicians and so on. As evidence of the fact we were paying for the services that everybody rendered.”

He indicated that he would not authoritatively speak to the findings as it would restructure how his team would respond to and deal with Kalandanya.

“He was of course one of those sympathizers of PF though a business person who provided support and of course a few services, which services if they needed payment, we paid. If there was any omission I think we are yet to respond to that,”Nakacinda indicated.

The Alebwelelapo advocate charged that his group would not risk passing on responsibility to Sampa for him to clear the debt mountain, as it will send a wrong signal that team Lungu is spineless.

“Miles Sampa remains a masquerader in terms of the leadership of our party(PF) and we will not be playing double standard in one vain we believe he’s masquerading as president and then later on we say can you pay for the obligation. I don’t think we are playing those games. We are fully in leadership and we will take responsibility of all matters that are relating on the party,” Nakacinda said.

He clarified that he was the only person to make pronouncements on how the issue at hand will be dealt with.

“I speak on behalf of the party I am Secretary General, beyond me there’s nothing you can only go to the president. The position is that all matters relating to the party, the buck stops at legitimate leadership of the party and we will handle all these issues,”Nakacinda emphasized.

He mentioned that though the party was facing an ‘uphill battle’, it will pull through.

“Of course it has been a difficult path just what we have experienced with honorable Given Lubinda, what we have gone through the past two to three years has not been an easy job of course we have been a subject of scorn, a subject of harassments, ridicule, demonized in many ways and now attempts to have the party destroyed. But, we have to weather the storm and navigate until we reach where God has ordained of us to go,”said Nakacinda

“What will happen is to assess whether the debt exists or not. Whether the contractual obligations were fulfilled or not. I can’t answer at this particular stage. Of payment, I can only tell you that we will undertake all obligations of the party being the ones in leadership.”

Welcome to Kuomboka ceremony, Cousin HH

. . . Bitter tribalists pretending to respect Litunga

Barotseland

I would like to add to the, otherwise, needless debate regarding the attendance by President Hichilema of our age-old beloved Kuomboka traditional ceremony which will take place in Lealui and Limulunga on April 20, 2024.

Here in Barotseland, we eagerly await the visit of our cousin to our ceremony, which will be an honour as it has always been when all serving Zambian presidents have graced the event.

As we, the people of Barotseland await our cousin’s visit, we will also be honoured to receive His Royal Highness Mwine Lubemba Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga II who will be our guest honour at the invitation of His Royal Highness the Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II
This will be the first time in our history that a Chitimukulu will be gracing our cherished Kuomboka ceremony as guest of honour.
This is a reciprocal visit to the one the Litunga made in August 2023 when he went as guest of honour to Ng’wena in Mungwi District during the 2023 Ukusefya pa Ng’wena traditional ceremony of the Bemba people.

As the people of Barotseland, we are humbled that Mwine Lubemba will be reciprocating the visit.
This is just how it should be in a country that desires to continue living in harmony as one people and, as in our country’s case, as One Zambia, One Nation.

About President Hichilema, we are humbled to hear that he has humbled himself to come and attend our ceremony where he is not guest of honour.
This, indeed, is the embodiment of humility!
It takes tonnes of humility to do what President Hichilema has done.
But, as usual, sworn tribalists, who have never liked us as a people, are doing their best to misinterpret the head of state’s decision to show utmost respect and honour to our king by coming to attend the Kuomboka ceremony in his capacity as a Zambian.
We love our president and no amount of propaganda by bitter souls, some of whom are not even Zambian, will separate us from our cousin whom we overwhelmingly voted for in August 2021 to remove a cabal of thieves.

Those doubting the inseparable bond we have with Cousin Hichilema should wait for tomorrow when he arrives in Barotseland.
During the reign of these desperate souls, they never ever liked us and sent many of our people in the civil service into premature retirement in what they called “national interest”.

These are the same tribal characters who have bandied us, the people of Barotseland, our cousins in Southern Province and our North-Western neighbours, as “Zambezi region”.

When it suits them and their leader kaminamisa who is plotting a political comeback, they change course.
This time, they want to pretend that they love us and respect our king, the Litunga.
We know you.

You won’t succeed in blindfolding us.
Welcome to the 2024 Kuomboka ceremony Mwine Lubemba and our cousin, President Hichilema

President Hichilema´s toilets disturb Brian Mundubile

…´it’s a rip-off can’t cost K350,000 each´

19.04.24
Hon. Brian Mundubile is perplexed at President Hakainde Hichilema´s decision to endorse makeshift toilets built at an alleged exorbitant cost of K350, 000 each.

The lawmaker believes the cost is ´exaggerated´ , a probe must be instituted to establish that, the small toilets that have raised a media stench in country cost much less than the stated alleged amount.

Hon. Mundubile has challenged President Hichilema and his team to justify how an estimated 2×4 toilet could possibly cost more money than a modest two bedroomed house with a toilet and bathroom included.

“Anyone who has built a modest two or three bedroomed house will confirm to you that the cost is about K300,000 total to complete the house with everything in it,” hon. Mundubile said.

He asked, “how then can a small toilet with cheap doors and roofing sheets cost more than a two to three bedroomed house? Something is terribly wrong here and it’s sad President Hichilema has allowed himself to be caught into this brewing toilet scandal.”

Hon. Mundubile reminded Mr Hichilema that while in opposition, he was the biggest critic on cost of construction of roads, airports, and bridges under President Edgar Lungu which he said were ´overpriced´ and sub-standard in quality.

“He (President Hichilema) always spoke against our construction projects calling them overpriced and not durable and not built on time now look at his toilets, this is shameful, and it reflects badly on the President,” Mundubile said.

Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, the government spokesman recently threatened the privately owned KBNTV for discussing the questionable standards of the toilets and the rationale behind taking the President to launch them when that could have been done by a councillor.

Hon. Mundubile warned President Hichilema that when he is no longer in office, ´uncomfortable questions´ will be asked on how he endorsed certain projects such as the toilets and disposal of state assets such as mines.

The 1,400 toilets, multiply by K350,000 each, have raised an ´engineering smell´ in the Zambian media and political arena prompting critics to suggest that there was corruption in the tendering process.

Hon. Mundubile said, “how else can you explain the amount for a one room toilet, maybe hon. Mweetwa has an answer to this question since he has answers to everything.”

President Hichilema wants to use the toilets as a tool to fight cholera that has killed hundreds of Zambians recently.

Kaunda Blamed UK for UNZA’s Inferior Degree

By Field Ruwe, EdD

PLEASE NOTE: I am an academic, not a politician, and do not envision myself as having a political career. This is a thoroughly researched piece of work, not an opinion editorial. You have to read the entire article to fully comprehend its content.

On July 12, 1966, Chancellor of the University of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda, spoke: “I have to reiterate on this most important occasion what I have already said in the past, that as far as education is concerned, Britain’s colonial record is most criminal. This country has been left by her as the most uneducated and the most unprepared of Britain’s dependencies on the African continent. This record is even treasonable to mankind when it is recalled that in the seventy years of British occupation, Zambia has never lacked money, and, except for a year or two, her budget has never been subsidized by the British Treasury.”

The occasion was the official opening of the University of Zambia. The above quote was Kaunda’s scathing rebuke of Britain’s failure to develop a robust educational system in Northern Rhodesia. In January 1964, the then Prime Minister Kaunda had received the controversial 1963 Lockwood Report on the establishment of the University of Zambia.

In planning the establishment of the University of Zambia, the Lockwood Committee recommended that the proposed University of Zambia entrance requirements be a “lower level than was the norm in Africa” [see Report on the Development of a University in Northern Rhodesia, 1963]. This decision can be grandfathered into the University of Zambia’s degree deemed as inferior by the UK NARIC recognition agency.

It is imperative to keep a sense of historical perspective to fully understand where I am headed with this. Between 1890 and 1925, the absence of a defined educational policy in Northeastern Rhodesia and Northwestern Rhodesia, established under the British South African Company, was due to Cecil Rhodes’ opposition to educating natives. Consequently, Rhodes refused to create a budget for the education of indigenous people in the two territories. It was Rhodes who inserted words like “inferior,” “primitive,” and “backward,” in the “othering” language that white settlers perpetuated and Queen Victoria failed to condemn.

Upon the British government assuming control of the two regions and establishing Northern Rhodesia in 1925, the American Phelps-Stokes Commission was formed with the aim of developing an education system suitable for the local inhabitants. The commission advocated for the training of Northern Rhodesia’s indigenous population in skills like manual labor and craftsmanship, instead of establishing Western-type schools like was the case in other British territories in Africa. Similarly, the British implementation of the education system for indigenous inhabitants of Northern Rhodesia between 1925 and 1964 aimed to align with many of the proposals put forth by the Phelps-Stokes Commission.

Apparently, the Lockwood Committee chaired by Sir John Lockwood, former Vice Chancellor of London University, was aware of the Phelps-Stokes Commission’s recommendations. Conceived out of a conference on the Development of Higher Education in Central Africa, held in September 1962, at Antananarivo, Malagasy, the Lockwood Committee was tasked with the establishment of a university in Northern Rhodesia.

The then Minister of Local Government and Social Welfare, Kenneth Kaunda, was hoping the proposed Zambia University (University of Zambia) would replicate the educational models of Makerere University (Uganda), Dar-es-Salaam University (Tanzania), University of Nairobi (Kenya). These institutions like the others in the British colonies in Africa mirrored the higher education system of Great Britain and held affiliations with the University of London.

Between 1946 and 1970, the University of London engaged in collaborative efforts referred to as “schemes of special relations” with universities in the Commonwealth. Such institutions were conferred a royal charter which granted them specific privileges. The charter, signed by the Queen of England, enabled colonial universities to align with the University of London on matters such as student admission criteria, course content, examination procedures, and academic affairs.

Imbued in the British imperial doctrine of keeping the indigenous people of Northern Rhodesia at the bottom of the totem pole, Sir John Lockwood, a former Vice Chancellor of the London University, made no effort to enroll the University of Zambia into schemes of special relations with the University of London. Instead, the Lockwood Committee deviated from the British education model and made the University of Zambia autonomous, as opposed to a university benefiting from the British education system.

Kaunda was fully aware of this. After completing his studies at Munali Central Trade School in 1941, Kaunda acknowledged the importance of acquiring a British education. The British Department of Education had imposed the British system of education and their language on their colonies. As education began to occupy a prominent position in the consciousness of the indigenous inhabitants, the desire to learn English and attend British schools surged.

Bearing this in mind, Kaunda, who assumed office as republican president on October 24, 1964, was infuriated upon learning that the Lockwood Commission had excluded Zambia from the schemes of special relations. He became even more outraged when he discovered Zambia was the only country in the Commonwealth omitted. Dissatisfied with the Lockwood Report, Chancellor Kaunda contemplated the rationale behind the unjust treatment that Her Majesty’s most affluent African territory had endured in its educational history. He could not help but to suspect an element of racism in the decision-making process.

In the scholarly paper titled “Education in Zambia: Qualitative Expansion at the Expense of Qualitative Improvement,” J. Elliot sheds light on the intentional racist actions taken by colonial masters and white settlers in Northern Rhodesia to impede the educational advancement of indigenous people in Northern Rhodesia. According to Elliot, the underlying motivation was driven by self-interest and the desire to secure own employment and uphold a system that kept the native population uneducated and limited to menial jobs.

Elliot’s supposition was reflected in the Lockwood Report that set out to keep the indigenous people in an inferior status by recommending a University of Zambia of a lower caliber compared to other universities in the Commonwealth. The Lockwood Committee, in its recommendation, proposed that the University of Zambia should have admission criteria that were relatively lower compared to other African and colonial universities.

The committee provided a rationale for its decision by referencing the limited number of “A” level Form Six graduates and asserting that exclusively admitting them to the University of Zambia would restrict academic prospects. The committee further recommended that achieving a specific standard of performance in the “O” level of the G.C.E. examination should be the basis for admission into degree programs of the University of Zambia. This marked a stark departure from the usual practice in the Commonwealth of Nations, in which university admission typically necessitated “A” levels.

On independence day, the Kaunda government encountered a significant dearth of human resources, as there were only one thousand indigenous Zambians possessing school certificates and a mere one hundred university graduates who had schooled abroad. With this, Kaunda, in need of rapid acceleration, failed to condemn and challenge the recommendations of the Lockwood Committee. In 1965, Kaunda went ahead and commissioned the building of the University of Zambia on Great East Road as recommended by the Commission.

The following year, the University of Zambia admitted 233 degree students, with the highest degree available at the time being a Bachelor’s. Among the total student population, 204 students with “O” levels were required to take a year of “A” levels, while the remaining 29 students who already had “A” levels were able to enter directly into the second year of studies. As a result, the first cohort of degree students completed a two-year program and earned a comprehensive four-year degree upon graduation, while “A” level students took three years to complete their studies.

In 1967, the University of Zambia provided equal opportunities for degree examinations to external candidates, without any distinction in the qualifications obtained. The imposition of this proposal, supposedly in response to the Zambian government’s request for skilled labor, ultimately led to a further reduction in quality standards. Furthermore, standards were diminished when the Committee suggested the introduction of correspondence studies.

The historical context outlined in this article reveals that UNZA was established not with the intention of conforming to global standard, but rather to addressing the specific requirements of Zambia. Consequently, the university continues to struggle to achieve its intended roles as a prestigious educational institution, a repository of knowledge, and a hub of innovative research.

As long as the University of Zambia maintains its status quo, the UK NARIC evaluation that has bedeviled the UNZA graduate and degraded his/her degree to an inferior diploma level will maintain the stigma.

The most serious obstacle to the growth of the university is its reluctance to jettison the Lockwood recommendations and embrace a universally accepted dynamic ecosystem that spurs sound and relevant academic programs. It is the opinion of this author that the university should no longer draw its inspiration from the local environment but from those universities around the world that have created educational systems that yield positive outcomes.

On May 19, 2022, a comprehensive proposal was delivered to President Hichilema through Principal Private Secretary Bradford Machila. Nawa Stands Tall on Pedestal of Integrity

By Benedict Tembo

Reformist Mubita Nawa’s candidacy for one of the world’s most prestigious police jobs is entering a critical stage as preliminary assessments are set for next week. Mr. Nawa is vying for the position of Secretary General of International Police (INTERPOL) and is facing competition from three candidates from the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

The Zambia Police Service director of administration is undaunted by competition and stands not only on the standard virtues of policing but also on the pedestal of reform so that INTERPOL reflects a true global image. The assistant commissioner of police is inspired by his passion for a world safe for everyone and one that presents opportunities to all. His candidature also seeks to reverse a trend that has excluded Africa for more than 100 years of INTERPOL’s existence as the position of Secretary General has only been held by representatives outside the continent. And that, Mr. Nawa says, should be the beginning of reform.

Should he go through, as he believes he will, reform will start from within the executive committee and secretariat which are seemingly a closed shop for Africa. His blueprint also details major changes even in the way projects are spread across the globe so that they reflect the global character of the organization. Preliminary assessments of the four candidates are set for April 22 to 26 while the final will be around June. Despite facing an obvious stiff competition, Mr. Nawa is unfazed as his confidence is full to the brim not only because of the reform agenda but his unparalleled curriculum vitae that clearly sets him apart. “I am very confident as I believe I have the right expertise, exposure, and experience for the job,” Mr. Nawa says. He has immense exposure and experience in international law enforcement from the Southern African Development Community, the United Nations, and Interpol.

Backing

Apart from endorsement of the Zambian government, Mr. Nawa boasts of support almost throughout Africa. The African Union at its recent summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia unanimously agreed to rally behind one African candidate which is Zambia. His strength so far includes exposure to a wide range of jurisdictions, different international organizations, having worked in several multi-cultural environments, and having worked at leadership positions in all these places.

Mr. Nawa has gained experience at operational and strategic level, especially the experience of the realities of the policing challenges, dynamics, and realities from the field having been Director of the Interpol regional bureau for Southern Africa. Being the only African candidate, Mr. Nawa also has the consensus of countries to implement change of the status quo. He sees the Executive Committee voting for the Secretary General and not the General Assembly as the only threat. “The Brazilian candidate is a member of the Executive Committee where he is vice president for the Americas region, which is responsible for the interviews and selection of the SG. The United Kingdom candidate Stephen Kavanagh is the Executive Director Police Service at Interpol headquarters, technically number two from the Secretary General. The fourth contestant is Faisal Shankah.

While Mr. Nawa is still struggling to raise resources for his campaign, the Brazilian candidate Valdery Urquiza and his UK counterpart can traverse the world directly meeting Heads of State and Government under the guise of their current positions while canvassing for support for their candidacy. He is also disadvantaged by not having direct access at certain levels which in some cases delays the campaign activities. “Direct access allows for proper briefings and putting the authorities in a clear perspective of the processes involved. Reporting through third parties creates information gaps,” Mr. Nawa says. He has engaged relevant offices to assist. “For instance, I have direct access to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation senior officials. We have been having physical and virtual meetings arranged by Foreign Affairs,” Mr. Nawa says.

Google has fired 28 employees who participated in a 10-hour sit-in over $1.2B Israel contract

Google has fired 28 employees who participated in a 10-hour sit-in at the search giant’s offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California, to protest the company’s business ties with the Israel government.

The pro-Palestinian staff at Google had donned traditional Arab headscarves as they stormed and occupied the office of a top executive in California on Tuesday, April 16.

They were fired late Wednesday, April 17, after an internal investigation, Google vice president of global security Chris Rackow said in a companywide memo.

“They took over office spaces, defaced our property, and physically impeded the work of other Googlers,” Rackow wrote in the memo.

“Their behavior was unacceptable, extremely disruptive, and made co-workers feel threatened.”

In New York, protesters had occupied the 10th floor of Google’s offices in the Chelsea section of Manhattan as part of a protest that also extended to the company’s offices in Seattle for what it called “No Tech for Genocide Day of Action.”

“Behavior like this has no place in our workplace and we will not tolerate it,” Rackow wrote.

“It clearly violates multiple policies that all employees must adhere to – including our code of conduct and policy on harassment, discrimination, retaliation, standards of conduct, and workplace concerns.”

Rackow added that the company “takes this extremely seriously, and we will continue to apply our longstanding policies to take action against disruptive behavior – up to and including termination.”

The fired staffers are affiliated with a group called No Tech For Apartheid, which has been critical of Google’s response to the Israel-Hamas war.

The impacted workers blasted Google over the firings in a statement shared by No Tech For Apartheid spokesperson Jane Chung.

“This evening, Google indiscriminately fired 28 workers, including those among us who did not directly participate in yesterday’s historic, bicoastal 10-hour sit-in protests,” the workers said in the statement.

“This flagrant act of retaliation is a clear indication that Google values its $1.2 billion contract with the genocidal Israeli government and military more than its own workers — the ones who create real value for executives and shareholders.”

“Sundar Pichai and Thomas Kurian are genocide profiteers,” the statement added, referring to Google’s CEO and the CEO of its cloud unit, respectively.

“We cannot comprehend how these men are able to sleep at night while their tech has enabled 100,000 Palestinians killed, reported missing, or wounded in the last six months of Israel’s genocide — and counting.”

Israel launched a retaliatory strike against a site in Iran early Friday morning

0

Israel launched a retaliatory strike against a site in Iran early Friday morning, U.S. officials confirmed to several media outlets, though an Iranian official has downplayed the attack as a “failed and humiliating” drone strike.

The strike happened on April 19, which is the birthday of Iranian supreme leader Khamenei aged 84.

ABC News, CBS News, NPR, and others have cited unnamed U.S. officials in reporting that one or more missiles were launched by the Israeli military at Iran.

Bloomberg News reported that Israeli officials had warned U.S. officials earlier on Thursday that it planned to attack Iran in the next 24-48 hours. An unnamed senior U.S. official also told CNN that the U.S. was warned of Israel’s planned retaliatory action, a response the official said the U.S. “didn’t endorse.”

Details of the strike, including its exact location and the extent of the damage, remain unclear.

FARS, a news agency managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, reported that explosions occurred near Isfahan—a city some 340 km away. south of Tehran that hosts key military sites, including a major airbase and nuclear facilities. It later clarified that the nuclear facility is completely safe, according to “informed sources.”

Iranian state-affiliated news agency IRNA reported that Iran’s air defence system had been activated in the skies of several provinces, following explosions heard in and around Isfahan. The source of the explosion was a “defence shot,” fired after the air defence in Tabriz, a city northwest of Isfahan, saw a “suspicious object,” IRNA reported, adding that the city was in “complete peace.”

Hossein Dalirian, an Iranian space agency spokesperson, said on X that reports of a foreign missile attack were “not true” and that it was three “micro birds” that were shot down.

Israel attacks Iran on the birthday of Iran
The apparent Israeli retaliation comes just days after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel over the weekend, most of which were intercepted by Israel’s defence systems as well as those of its allies and neighbours.

Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told CNN earlier on Thursday that “in case the Israeli regime embarks on adventurism again and takes action against the interests of Iran, the next response from us will be immediate and at a maximum level.”

US vetoes Palestine’s request for full UN membership

0

The United States on Thursday, April 18 stopped the United Nations from recognizing a Palestinian state by casting a veto in the Security Council to deny Palestinians full membership of the world governing body.

The Palestinian push for full U.N. membership came six months into a war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and as Israel is expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the U.N. considers to be illegal.

The US vetoed a draft resolution that recommended to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be admitted to membership” of the U.N.

Britain and Switzerland abstained, while the remaining 12 council members voted yes.

“The United States continues to strongly support a two-state solution. This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgement that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties,” Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood told the council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the U.S. veto in a statement as “unfair, unethical, and unjustified.”

Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour told the council after the vote: “The fact that this resolution did not pass will not break our will and it will not defeat our determination. We will not stop in our effort.”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz commended the United States for the veto.

Addressing the 12 council members who voted in favour of the draft resolution, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan said:

“It’s very sad because your vote will only embolden Palestinian rejectionism even more and make peace almost impossible.”
‘START WITH GAZA’

The Palestinians are currently a non-member observer state, a de facto recognition of statehood that was granted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012. But an application to become a full U.N. member needs to be approved by the Security Council and then at least two-thirds of the General Assembly.

“We believe that such recognition of Palestinian statehood should not come at the start of a new process, but it doesn’t have to be at the very end of the process. We must start with fixing the immediate crisis in Gaza,” Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward told the council.

The U.N. Security Council has long endorsed a vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, all territory captured by Israel in 1967.

Hamas condemned the U.S. stance in a statement and called on the international community to “support the struggle of our Palestinian people and their legitimate right to determine their destiny.”

“Failure to make progress towards a two-state solution will only increase volatility and risk for hundreds of millions of people across the region, who will continue to live under the constant threat of violence,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the council earlier on Thursday.

German Billionaire who disappeared during a hike in 2018 ‘living with mistress in Russia’

0

A German billionaire believed to have died in a skiing accident may be alive and living with a mistress in Moscow, new evidence has suggested.

Karl-Erivan Haub, 58 at the time, was training for a ski mountaineering race at the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland when he went missing in April 2018.

He was last seen heading up a ski lift alone one morning and never returned to his hotel.

Authorities including teams of alpine rescuers and five helicopters searched for six days, but his body was never found.

After the six-day search, the businessman was declared dead by a German court in 2021, according to the Seattle Times.

He was declared legally dead by a German court, leaving behind his wife, two children, and his company, retail giant Tengelmann Group which had more than 75,000 employees.

German Billionaire, Karl-Erivan Haub, who disappeared during a hike in 2018

His younger brother Christian swore in court that there was no indication Karl-Erivan, whose net worth was estimated at £5.2billion, remained alive.

But now a major investigation led by German broadcaster RTL claims to have found Karl-Erivan in Moscow, and believes he’s living there with a mistress named Veronika Ermilova.

One of the journalists, investigative reporter Liv von Boetticher, told Capital magazine that she was aware of photos allegedly showing Haub in Moscow in 2021, the same year he was legally declared dead.

“As far as I know, these photos were obtained on behalf of Christian Haub and two internal investigators working for him by an Israeli-American company that searched the biometric surveillance system in Moscow for images of Karl-Erivan Haub,” she explained.

The coincidence in appearance between Haub and the person in the images was about 90%, according to a Stern magazine report from March 2023.

Based on her information, Boetticher explained, Christian Haub had access to the photos when “he stated under oath to the Cologne District Court in May 2021 that he had ‘no reliable evidence’ that his brother was still alive.”

Boetticher insisted that there is “strong evidence that [Karl-Erivan Haub] could have caused his disappearance intentionally and that at least parts of his family were aware of it and, against their better judgment, kept this secret from the Cologne District Court and the public.”

Haub, who was born to German parents in Tacoma, Washington, and educated in Switzerland, was married and had two adult children at the time of his disappearance.

The latest evidence, however, suggested that he may have a younger woman on the go in Russia, Boetticher told Capital.

“There was an alleged lover of Karl-Erivan Haub, with whom he had frequent telephone contact before his disappearance and who is in contact with the Russian domestic secret service FSB,” she said.

Rumors about Haub and his alleged mistress, Veronika Ermilova, have circulated since around 2020, when his wife, Katrin, publicly sparred with her brothers-in-law over whether to have him declared legally dead, the Times reported.

Haub supposedly called Erminolca’s number 13 times three days before his disappearance, the Times added, citing RTL.

The billionaire was also rumored to have had a Russian passport in addition to his US and German citizenships, the outlet said.

There was also speculation that millions of euros in Tengelmann funds had been funneled to Russia between 2010 and 2015.

Haub vanished just one month after the death of his father, Erivan Haub. At the time of his death, the elder Haub was worth an estimated $6.4 billion, according to Forbes.

Boetticher indicated that the reason for Karl-Erivan Haub vanishing could be linked to the family’s business dealings.

“Our suspicion is that dealings with Russia or with Russian business partners may have put Karl-Erivan in trouble in the Western world,” the journalist suggested to Capital.

Christian Haub took over the Tengelmann Group as sole CEO shortly after his older brother disappeared.

His lawyer, Mark Binz, vehemently denied the journalists’ allegations in a comment to Zeit Online.

“Of course, there is no truth to the accusation,” Bonz scoffed. “Until a few weeks ago, the Cologne public prosecutor’s office saw it that way and therefore refused to start an investigation.”
