Thomas Kwoyelo: Uganda investigates commander of rebel Lord’s Resistance Army

0

The trial of a former child soldier who became a commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army has started in Uganda after a long wait.

Thomas Kwoyelo is accused of doing many bad things like killing people, hurting others, and making kids become soldiers.

He is the first LRA leader to be tried in a Ugandan court, which is a very important moment for the country’s legal system.

In 2011, when Mr. Kwoyelo went to court, he said he didn’t do the things he was accused of.

He has been in jail for 14 years before his trial because the crimes he is accused of are very serious and complicated, according to experts.

More than 20 years ago, Joseph Kony started the LRA in Uganda. He said he was fighting to create a government that follows the rules written in the Bible.

The group was well known for cutting off people’s arms and legs and taking children to be soldiers and for bad things. Hundreds of people had to leave their homes because of the fighting.

It started in northern Uganda, then moved to the Democratic Republic of Congo where Mr Kwoyelo was arrested in 2009, and later to the Central African Republic.

Friday’s trial is happening at the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Gulu. This is similar to Uganda’s own version of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Mr Kwoyelo has been to court before for pre-trial hearings, but the case has been delayed many times.

Several people will tell the court what they saw happen.

Human Rights Watch said that there have been long delays in this case, and generally, not enough people have been held responsible for the bad things that happened during the 25-year war in Uganda, including bad things done by the Ugandan government.

In 2021, the ICC gave Dominic Ongwen a 25-year jail sentence because he was a commander in the LRA. They didn’t give him the harshest punishment because he had been kidnapped as a kid and trained by rebels who had killed his parents.

Mr Kwoyelo says he was kidnapped by LRA fighters when he was a young teenager, while he was on his way to school.

Many people who used to be part of the LRA have been forgiven and allowed to go free under a law in Uganda, after they left and said they didn’t want to be part of the rebel group anymore.

But Mr Kwoyelo was not allowed to choose that, leading to claims that the denial was based on politics.

As his court case continues, people are worried that the money to support it could run out. This would make the process even longer for the people who say they were hurt by him and want justice.

Ruto wins as Kenyan court removes health levy ban

0

The Kenyan Court of Appeal has approved a healthcare insurance levy that was previously banned.

President William Ruto wants to make sure that every person in Kenya can get healthcare they can afford. This is called the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

But a lot of people don’t like it because they think it’s a new tax.

Critics say the fee will make the cost of living higher, which caused a lot of protests last year.

The SHIF launch was stopped by the High Court last November because businessman Joseph Enock Aura filed a petition against parts of the program.

This made President Ruto upset, along with the suspension of a controversial housing tax. He recently accused some judges of corruption in public. He said the courts were teaming up with the other party to stop his government’s plans, which made lawyers protest.

The SHIF is replacing the old National Health Insurance Fund because a lot of money from taxpayers has been lost due to corruption.

On Friday, a group of judges ended the ban because they thought it was a threat to the health rights of many people who were not involved in the case.

However, the court stopped the parts that made it necessary for people to sign up for the program.

All employees need to give 2. 75% of their pay to the new health fund.

The new rule doesn’t say what happens if people can’t pay, but President Ruto promised that the government would cover the costs for them.

People who don’t like the new health plan say that the 2. 75% deduction is a big increase from what they used to pay to the NHIF. This is in addition to the recent increase in fuel prices and living costs.

Some people worry that the new healthcare organization will use most of the money it collects for things like paperwork and office expenses, instead of using it for actual healthcare.

Last year in June, Mr. Ruto approved a new law called the Finance Act. This new law made both employers and employees pay a 1. 5% housing levy, which many people did not like.

The government wants to offer housing that low-income people can afford. The levy is being disputed in court.

Houthis say Russian and Chinese ships are free to pass through the Red Sea without being fired upon

0

A top Houthi official has declared that Russian and Chinese ships will be guaranteed safe passage through the Red Sea.

Senior political adviser and Houthi spokesman Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said his rebels were waging an ‘ethical’ war, adding the attacks on merchant vessels would only cease when Israel stops all military operations in Gaza.

‘The madness and idiocy of the USA and Great Britain have played against themselves – now their ships will not be able to use one of the key trade arteries in the world.

‘The US and UK will need to stop aggression against Yemen, stop the war in the Gaza Strip, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of medicine, fuel and food – only then will we immediately stop all our operations in the Red Sea,’ he told Russian outlet Izvestia.

‘The war we are waging today is one of a kind in terms of its moral and ethical frontier… the whole world sympathises with Yemen’s heroic stand to end the genocide of the Palestinian people.

‘As for all other countries, including Russia and China, their shipping in the region is not threatened. Moreover, we are ready to ensure the safety of the passage of their ships in the Red Sea, because free navigation plays a significant role for our country,’ he concluded.

Hours after Bukhaiti’s interview with Izvestia, the Houthis claimed yet another attack on a US ship early this morning.

The Houthis’ campaign has disrupted global commerce, stoked fears of inflation, and deepened concern that fallout from the Israel-Hamas war could destabilise the Middle East.

The Houthis said in a statement posted to social media that their ‘naval forces… carried out a targeting operation against an American ship’ – identified as the Chem Ranger – ‘with several appropriate naval missiles, resulting in direct hits’.

The US military’s Central Command, which is responsible for the Middle East, said the Houthis ‘launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles at M/V Chem Ranger, a Marshall Island-flagged, US-owned, Greek-operated tanker’ on Thursday night.

‘The crew observed the missiles impact the water near the ship. There were no reported injuries or damage to the ship,’ the command said on social media platform X.

When will Mr Hichilema start listening to advice, and stop advising his advisors?- Fred M’membe

NAFILWA, NAFIPENYA, WABUFI!

We advise Mr Hakainde Hichilema to stop posing and posturing, and start working.

Addressing the Permanent Secretaries yesterday, Mr Hichilema warned about under performance and the consequences thereof.

It is clear that Mr Hichilema is very good at apportioning blame, pointing fingers even when many fingers point back at him. It’s his nature to blame everybody else except himself.

It’s laughable to see him warn Permanent Secretaries on frequent traveling or trips yet he has done over 60 international trips in the short period of he has been in office. Does this President mull over his decisions and statements before going public?

Who manages him kanshi? What kind of presidential advisory unit exists at State House? When will Mr Hichilema start listening to advice, and stop advising his advisors?

We ask these questions because every time Mr Hichilema stands to speak to the nation, he comes out like a clown in a circus. Usually, his remarks are devoid of substance, context, sensitivity, logic and direction. He merely shoots from the hip as an act of political desperation.

Where does Mr Hichilema draw the courage and confidence to caution Permanent Secretaries on underperformance when he is the most underperforming leader this country has ever seen? He is the worst culprit for this problem. He himself has underperformed greatly and has lost focus. This country is in autopilot mode and he is not going to make a difference in any way whatsoever.

There are no results that are showing that he has performed. The indicators at all levels from debt restructuring to exchange rate, to mealie meal to fuel, and the cost of living are not showing any signs of improvement.

There is grand corruption, wasteful expenditure, abuse of law enforcement agencies against political competitors, shrinking democratic space, tribal or regional appointments and granting tax incentives to the mines, denying the state treasury of the necessary resources, among many other things.

So, how can a person presiding over such a rotten system of government demand, frugality, accountability, transparency and performance from senior government officials?

Mr Hichilema needs this advice more than the Permanent Secretaries.

Nafilwa, nafipenya, wabufi!

Are judges being cherry-picked to hear PF cases?- Sishuwa Sishuwa

Are judges being cherry-picked to hear PF cases?

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

Why are all the court cases – three in the Lusaka High Court, one in the Constitutional Court – involving the State-supported Miles Sampa versus the main opposition Patriotic Front only given to Lozi-speaking judges?

The first case was allocated to Timothy Katanekwa – a Lozi speaker. The second case was allocated to Situmbeko Chocho – a Lozi speaker. The third one, which is before the Constitutional Court, was allocated to Kenneth Mulife – a Lozi speaker. The most recent case concerning 7 PF members (and presidential hopefuls) who have petitioned the legality of the convention that elected Sampa to the party leadership, has been allocated to Sililo Siloka – a Lozi. Is this a coincidence or it is all planned? What is it that Lozi-speaking judges have that judges from other ethnic groups do not have? What makes, say, Bemba-speaking judges or those hailing from Eastern Province unqualified to hear and determine matters involving the PF versus Miles Sampa?

In addition to a shared province of origin and ethnic-language identity, three of the four judges handling PF cases – that is Situmbeko, Mulife, and Sililo – were all appointed to their current roles by President Hakainde Hichilema in 2023. The only exception is justice Katanekwa who was appointed High Court judge by Frederick Chiluba in 1996 but was just recently suspended from his position by Hichilema. If the argument is that the trio has a rather limited case load, why is it that judges from the other ethnic groups who were appointed alongside them are being overlooked for these general cases? Is there a fear that judges hailing from the Eastern and Bemba-speaking provinces cannot be trusted to hear and determine PF matters in an impartial manner? If there is none, then how best should we understand the fact that it is only Lozi-speaking judges who are being asked to deliberate on PF matters?

And given the gravity of the outcome of the cases to the fate of Zambia’s democracy and party system, especially the case given to Sililo, what explains the failure by Lusaka High Court Judge-in-Charge for general allocations, Charles Zulu, to assign these cases to a diverse set of experienced judges (– and there are many justices available from different ethnic groups!)? Similarly, why did Mweetwa Shilimi – another Hichilema appointee who was simultaneously promoted as Deputy President of the Constitutional Court, the official responsible for case allocation – overlook all the experienced judges on the Concourt bench for the recently appointed justice Mulife?

Are judges from the ‘Zambezi region’ – where the President comes from – seen as more likely than those from a different region to make decisions that would favour President Hichilema, who, as I have previously shown in the article below, appears to be the driving force behind Miles Sampa and the PF leadership wrangles? If they are not seen this way, then how best should we understand the continued allocation of cases involving Sampa and the PF to relatively inexperienced judges who have only been in their positions a matter of months.

Why Is Hichilema Finding The Name Barotseland Offensive?- Fred M’membe

WHY IS HICHILEMA FINDING THE NAME BAROTSELAND OFFENSIVE?

Yes, Mr Hakainde Hichilema is right: there is only one unitary state, one country called Zambia.

But within Zambia, there are many regions that came together to form this one Zambia, one nation. And by coming together, these regions of our country did not completely give up their identity and their history. Our people were not always Zambians. They became Zambians in 1964.

It can not be denied that there is a region of our country called Barotseland. In the same way, in the United Kingdom, there are regions called Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland occupied by the Scots, Welsh, English, and Irish people respectively and to large extent governed by them.

The change of the name Barotseland to Western Province was effected in 1968, without consultation with the people of Barotseland. It was a unilateral executive decision. There is no person who can name another person’s child without consent or consultation with that person.

There is no person who is genuinely offended in this country or harmed by the people of Western Province calling their region Barotseland. In fact, it was interesting to note that when the Litunga went to attend Ukusefya pa ng’wena traditional ceremony in Northern Province, a Bemba region, all who spoke at that ceremony referred to him as the Litunga, the King of Barotseland.

The Bembas present at that ceremony, including Mwinelubemba, the Chitimukulu himself, seemed comfortable and not offended by the name Barotseland. Why should Mr Hichilema be troubled by the name Barotseland? Why is he finding the name offensive to him? What is his problem with the name Barotseland?
As a party, we think we have made enough consultations over the name Barotseland, with people from this region. All the people we have consulted want to revert back to the name Barotseland. On day or two of the Socialist Party government, a statutory instrument will be signed to restore the name Barotseland.
The Socialist Party will localise governance to give all the regions of our country far more beyond what is in those eight pages of the Barotse Agreement of 1964.

We would like to caution that the issue of Barotseland will not be put to rest by arrogance, intimidation, or threats because it’s anchored on legitimate grievances.

Today, Barotseland, or rather Western Province, as they are happy to call it, is the second poorest region of our country, enduring poverty levels of 78.6 per cent. It is only surpassed by Muchinga Province, which is leading the country in poverty, with poverty levels of 82.6 per cent.

In the third position is Northern Province, with 78 per cent poverty. In the fourth position, it’s Luapula Province with 77.3 per cent. And in the fifth position is Eastern Province, with poverty levels of 76.4 per cent.

It is very clear that this system of governance that we have been pursuing since 1968 has brought nothing but shame on the people of Barotseland. These very high levels of poverty bring nothing but shame and disgrace to a people and their legitimate or authentic leaders.

There is no doubt that the authentic leaders of the people of Barotseland are the Litunga, his Ngambela, and the entire Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE). But as things stand today, these authentic leaders of the people of Barotseland are helpless. They have no power to take their people out of poverty, out of disgrace, out of this shameful existence of being among the poorest people in Zambia.

We have no doubt that until the authentic leaders of the people of Barotseland take the lead and allow their people to govern themselves in a meaningful way, this shameful existence of poverty, despair, and loss of self-esteem will not end.

And if it will not end, the people of Barotseland will resist it. They will struggle for a more fair, more just, and more humane dispensation.

For the people of Barotseland and all the people of Zambia, there is no sensible alternative to localising governance and to the politicians sharing power with their traditional and religious leaders in an equitable and acceptable manner. The politicians in Lusaka alone have failed our people for 59 years and can not be left to run this country alone.

If we fail to give our people such a dispensation, the displeasure we are hearing from Barotseland will spread to all the parts of our country tomorrow. Today, it’s the people of Barotseland. Tomorrow, it will be the people of Lubemba. The next day, it will be the people of Kumawa, and so on and so forth.

We advise Mr Hichilema to mull over things and consider the grievances coming out of Barotseland in a more calmer, rational, and mature manner. Threats and intimidation won’t do!

Former flight attendant named first female president of Japan Airlines

0

Japan Airlines has chosen a woman to be its next president for the first time. This is rare for a big Japanese company and a global airline.

Mitsuko Tottori started working as a flight attendant for the main airline in 1985. Then she got promoted to higher positions.

She said she wished that her promotion would inspire other women to go for the next level in their careers.

Despite getting better, very few big airlines have women in top leadership roles.

Ms Tottori will become the new president on 1 April, taking over for Yuji Akasaka. Akasaka will take over as the top boss of the airline, replacing Yoshiharu Ueki.

The appointments happen a few weeks after a Japan Airlines plane crashed into a smaller coastguard aircraft at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

A “miraculous” rescue saved all 379 people on the plane, but unfortunately five out of the six crew on the coastguard plane did not survive.

Ms Tottori used to work in the front lines before she became the director for cabin crew in 2015. She said safety would be her top priority.

“I have worked in safety and customer service for most of my career, specifically as a cabinet attendant,” she said at a press conference.

“Keeping flights safe is the most important thing for airlines. ” She said she will keep showing how dedicated she is to this principle.

She also said there were women having a hard time moving forward in their job, and she hoped that her appointment could give them the confidence to take the next step.

A study on airlines found that in 2022, 12 women were in charge of the top 100 airlines, which is an increase from six the year before.

These people are Marjan Rintel from KLM, Annette Mann from Austrian Airlines and Lynne Embleton from Aer Lingus.

Earlier this month, Joanna Geraghty became the first woman to be the boss of a big airline in the United States. She was appointed as the chief executive of JetBlue Airways.

It is not common for women to be in charge of big companies in Japan.

The government wants more women to have top jobs at big companies by 2030 because they didn’t reach their goal by 2020.

It is also telling businesses to choose at least one woman as a high-up leader by 2025.

In 2021, women in Japan held the lowest number of management positions compared to other countries in the OECD, with only 13. 2%

The OECD said that the trend shows that human resources are not being used properly.

Ten activists killed by suspected Jordanian airstrikes in southern Syria

0

Local activists and media are saying that at least 10 people, including children, were killed in air strikes in south-western Syria that were likely done by Jordan.

Many houses were said to be ruined in Arman, a town in Suweida province, around 20km (12 miles) away from the border.

Jordan authorities did not respond right away.

The military has likely bombed certain areas in Syria to attack people who are thought to be smuggling drugs.

Jordan and its friends in the West say that well-organized and heavily armed militias supported by Iran are causing a rise in smuggling into Jordan. This is happening in areas of Syria that are controlled by the government. They are especially smuggling a drug called Captagon, which is in high demand in the Gulf Arab states.

The Suwayda 24 news website, run by activists, said that there were air strikes in residential areas of Arman and nearby Malah early on Thursday.

It was reported that witnesses said two men named Omar Talab and Turki al-Halabi had their houses damaged and destroyed in Arman.

Mr Talab, his mom, and his aunt died. Also, seven of Mr. Halabi’s family members including his wife and two little girls were killed, according to witnesses. Halabi and his mother were stuck under their collapsed house and people thought they were dead.

Suwayda 24 shared a video of people looking for victims in one place. The local fire department found Mr. Halabi’s body and is also searching for another person.

A group in the UK called the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that nine people died in the Arman strikes. This included five women and two children. Another woman was stuck under the rubble and couldn’t get out.

The Observatory criticized the “massacre” in Arman and mentioned that Jordanian warplanes had trespassed into Syrian territory for the third time this year.

The attacks also hit a damaged warehouse and a house in Malah, but no one was hurt.

On January 8th, news sources reported that three people died in two different attacks. One attack hit a house and a farm in the town of Shaab, while the other hit a barn in Arman.

The next day after the strike, an editor named Ryan Marouf told Reuters news agency that it looks like Jordan is increasing its fight against drug dealers.

He said that Jordanian forces are focusing on finding and stopping drugs from being smuggled across the border. They are targeting farms where drugs may be stored and the homes and hideouts of drug dealers.

On January 6, the Jordanian army said they had killed five people in a fight with armed smugglers trying to come into Jordan from Syria.

Stalin icon taken down from church in Georgia

0

A picture of Joseph Stalin and a Russian Orthodox saint meeting was taken down from Georgia’s main cathedral.

The Georgian Church stated that the painting was taken to be fixed because there wasn’t enough proof that the two people in the painting had actually met.

The painting upset a lot of people and an activist recently threw blue paint on it to protest.

The church leaders and the ruling party have criticized the action.

The Patriarchate of Georgia said last week that icons must show true stories and that the picture of Stalin needs to be changed.

“The people who gave us the picture need to fix it, or we will have to do it for them,” it said.

A lot of people in Georgia are upset with the Church for accepting the icon because Stalin, who was from Georgia and wanted to be a priest when he was young, did a big purge of the clergy when he was in charge.

A picture of St. Matrona of Moscow was put in a church in Tbilisi. Matrona was a Russian woman who lived in the 20th century and was known for her visions and healing abilities. She was declared a saint in the 1990s.

In one picture, the Russian Orthodox saint is giving blessings to Stalin.

Several months ago, the Alliance of Patriots, a nationalist party suspected of ties to the Kremlin, donated it to the church.

The icon became famous this month after the politician Giorgi Kandelaki talked about it. It has been causing arguments and disagreements since it started.

Activist Nata Peradze posted a video of herself throwing eggs filled with paint at a picture, and explained that she was protesting against making a cruel leader seem heroic.

“I had to do something. I’m not going to talk about Stalin’s Terror because everyone knows about it, but my family on both sides suffered and relatives disappeared,” she told the BBC.

A very traditional pro-Russian group called Alt-Info, was involved in violent attacks against journalists in 2021 because of their homophobic beliefs. They have also organized protests outside Ms. Peradze’s house and in front of parliament.

She says people are threatening to kill her, so she’s hiding now. The police are protecting her house.

The scandal about the famous person has started a big argument in the country about the Soviet leader’s history.

The Georgian Dream party said it was bad that the icon was ruined, but they haven’t said anything about the national discussion about Stalin’s role.

The Sovlab research group is studying Georgia’s history of being controlled by the Soviet Union. They think that Russia’s leader, Putin, is making the Soviet dictator look good again. They also believe that Russia is using this as a way to control how people in Georgia think.

Sovlab has found 12 new statues of Stalin in Georgia in the last 10 years.

The singer in the choir who is very talented and special.

Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia in 1878. A very important person in the Russian revolution helped the Bolsheviks take control, and then he was the leader of the USSR from 1924 until he died in 1953.

Stalin killed many people and used strict rules and fear to get rid of anyone who disagreed with him and to create a communist government.

A lot of people in a tiny country in South Caucasian do not like the things that the Soviet Union left behind. But, some still feel proud of Stalin because he came from there and started with not much.

On 16 January, British author Simon Sebag Montefiore visited Tbilisi for a movie based on his book, Young Stalin. He was surprised to see the dictator’s picture in the cathedral.

Stalin went to a religious school and believed in God until he was almost an adult. “He was the best singer in the choir,” he said.

“However, he became very against the Church, started living a non-religious life, stopped believing in God, and supported Bolshevism and Marxism instead. ”

“He thought that killing a lot of people could make society better. ”

North Korea conducts ‘underwater nuclear weapons system’ tests

0

North Korea says it tested its “underwater nuclear weapon” because of military exercises by the US, South Korea, and Japan.

State media reported that the underwater drone, which might be able to hold a nuclear weapon, was tested in the ocean on the east side.

Seoul had earlier said that the North’s descriptions of the drones’ capability were wrong and there is no evidence of the tests being done.

South Korea said the reported tests were a “provocation”.

The South Korea defense ministry said that North Korea’s actions are dangerous and could cause problems in the Korean Peninsula and the world. If North Korea makes a direct attack, South Korea will respond strongly and decisively.

The North has tested its “Haeil-5-23” system before, but now they are doing more military actions.

On Sunday, it said it had used a new missile that uses solid fuel and can go a medium distance.

This means that there were military exercises with actual gunfire at the ocean border with South Korea in early January.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of Pyongyang, has been acting more aggressive lately by canceling agreements aimed at keeping the peace.

On Friday, North Korea said it was provoked by joint military exercises by the US, South Korea, and Japan. They said this made them want to test their underwater weapons. This was reported by the state agency KCNA.

It accused the exercises of making the situation in the region more unstable and putting North Korea’s security at risk.

The US, South Korea, and Japan have been doing more military exercises to stop North Korea from doing more military actions. North Korea has been doing tests of its nuclear bombs and launching new weapons more often. So the other countries want to show that they are ready to fight back. These actions go against the rules set by the United Nations.

Mr Kim keeps saying that his country is getting more weapons ready for a war that could start at any time.

During the New Year, he showed some big changes in his government’s position on South Korea.

And earlier this week, he said that the old goal of joining together with South Korea was no longer important. He called South Korea the “main enemy”.

The speech talks about improvements in the military and nuclear capabilities of the country, especially in its underwater operations.

In September, the North showed their first submarine that they say can shoot nuclear weapons.

Since March 2023, it has been testing its Haeil system, which are unmanned nuclear-armed drones that work underwater. Haeil means “tidal wave” in the Korean language.

We don’t know much about these weapons or how well they work, but North Korean media say they can go into enemy waters and make big explosions underwater.

Experts believe that if the weapons work the way North Korea says they do, they would be less important than the country’s nuclear missiles.

North Korea’s weapons are still being developed, so they are not a big threat yet. Ahn Chan-il, who used to live in North Korea and now studies it, said this to the news agency AFP.

Last year, North Korea said it put a spy satellite in space. They want to put three more up this year.

It is still unclear if the satellite is working properly and this has not been confirmed by an independent source.

South Korea said North Korea got its satellite up with help from Russia. Russia reportedly got weapons from North Korea for its war in Ukraine.

Last year, Mr Kim had important meetings with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin and defense minister Sergei Shoigu. This week the foreign minister of North Korea was also in Moscow.

Netanyahu openly opposes US efforts to establish Palestinian state

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he told the United States that he doesn’t want a Palestinian state to be created after the fighting in Gaza stops.

At a press conference, Mr. Netanyahu said he will continue the attack in Gaza until Hamas is destroyed and the Israeli hostages are released. He also said this could take several months.

With nearly 25,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza and 85% of the Strip’s people forced to leave their homes, Israel is facing strong pressure to stop its attack and have important discussions to bring an end to the war.

Many countries that support Israel, like the US, and even some that don’t, want the idea of creating two separate countries, Israel and Palestine, to be brought back to life. This would mean that a future Palestinian country would exist alongside Israel.

Many people hope that the crisis will make the fighting groups start talking to each other instead of keep fighting. They think that talking is the only way to stop the fighting from going on and on. But it seems that Mr. Netanyahu actually has the opposite intention based on his comments.

Speaking to reporters after Mr. Netanyahu’s recent comments, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby admitted that the US and Israel have different views on the issue.

On Thursday, Mr. Netanyahu said that Israel needs to have security control over all the land on the western side of the River Jordan, even the territory that might be given to a future Palestinian state.

“This is something that must happen, but it goes against the idea of Palestinian control. ” What should I do. I told our American friends the truth and I stopped the attempt to force a false reality on us that would hurt Israel’s safety,” he said.

Mr Netanyahu has spent a long time in politics and has always been against the idea of Palestine becoming its own country. Just last month, he said he was happy to have stopped it from happening. So, his recent comments are not unexpected.

However, the open disagreement with Washington’s diplomatic efforts, and the decision to continue the current military strategy, indicate that the divide is growing between Israel and its western supporters.

Since the attacks on October 7th, the US has supported Israel’s right to defend itself. This attack was the worst in Israel’s history, with 1,300 people killed and 240 taken hostage by Hamas gunmen.

As more people have died in Gaza and there have been many horrible scenes, Western governments are asking Israel to be careful and not use too much force.

The White House keeps trying to tell Israel what to do with its military. They want Israel to use more precise weapons instead of bombing everything. They also don’t want Israel to send troops into the area. And they think there should be two separate states, one for Israelis and one for Palestinians, with the Palestinian Authority involved in making peace in Gaza after the fighting.

MrKirby said the US has been very clear about what it wants Gaza to look like after the war.

“He said that the people of Gaza should have a say in their government, and it should not be taken over by another country. ”

Many people have not listened to Washington’s advice, and some have even rejected it, especially when the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits.

This has made some Americans very frustrated with the Biden administration because they seem to strongly support Israel without any conditions on the aid they give to their ally in the Middle East.

The prime minister of Israel said something that will make his small group of supporters and the very conservative ministers in his government happy.

However, this war will upset people at home and in other countries who are increasingly shocked by the number of people being harmed. Recent surveys indicate that most Israelis want him to focus on bringing the remaining hostages home instead of trying to destroy Hamas, which may be very difficult.

Renowned Mexican cartel boss ‘La Kena’ arrested

0

The head of a group of bad guys called the Gulf Cartel in Mexico got caught, according to local news.

José Alberto García Vilano, also known as La Kena or Ciclon 19, is said to be in charge of the violent gang Los Ciclones.

His group is being accused of taking four US citizens in March last year and causing the death of two of them.

Vilano was caught in a shopping area in Monterrey after officials were tipped off about where he was.

There is a video on social media that might show Vilano and his friends being walked through a mall by the police. But it is not confirmed if it is true.

Four people from the United States were taken by force in the city of Matamoros, which is right across from Brownsville, Texas.

Matamoros is in the middle of a fight between different groups of the Gulf Cartel. They are fighting to control the routes for smuggling drugs into the US.

Four people from America went across the border and into a town that was having problems to get plastic surgery, as told by their family members. Many Americans go to Mexico for cheaper medical treatment, but it can be risky.

Why one million people from America go to Mexico for medical tourism every year

A video showed the group getting into a pickup truck while men with big guns were there. One person is pushed onto the vehicle, while the others seem to be asleep and are pulled to the truck.

They had a difficult time for four days.

Two people named Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard were killed, along with a 33-year-old Mexican woman who was not involved in the situation.

The reason for the attack is not clear yet, but the Mexican authorities are looking into whether the group was thought to be part of a rival gang.

Shortly after the event, another group from the Gulf Cartel called the Scorpions Group, said sorry for the kidnapping and handed over five men they believed were responsible.

Since 2022, the government of Tamaulipas state in Mexico has offered a reward of 2,500,000 pesos (equal to $145,000 or £115,000) for information that helps catch Vilano in the city of Matamoros.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was looking for him too.

US strikes have not halted Houthi Red Sea attack – Biden

0

Houthi fighters fired another missile at a ship owned by the US on Thursday, even though President Joe Biden had previously stated that US attacks had not stopped the group’s attacks in the Red Sea.

The Pentagon said that no one was hurt and the ship was not damaged when the Houthis shot two missiles at the MV Chem Ranger.

The attack happened after the US bombed Yemen for the fifth time on Thursday.

The White House said that American forces stopped a bunch of Houthi missiles from being launched into the Red Sea.

After the US attacks, reporters in Washington DC asked Mr. Biden if the hits on Houthi targets were having an effect.

“He said they’re not stopping the Houthis when they say they’re working. ”

“Will they keep going. Yes”

The US military in charge of the Middle East said it attacked two Houthi missiles in the Southern Red Sea that were going to be launched.

The US military found the missiles in areas of Yemen controlled by the Houthi group. They found them around 3:40pm local time and said they were a threat to ships in the area.

“The US military later attacked and destroyed the missiles to protect themselves. ”

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said to reporters: “We do not want war. ”

We are not fighting the Houthis. We are doing things to defend ourselves.

Centcom also said that there was a try to attack the MV Chem Ranger. Authorities reported that two missiles designed to attack ships were launched at a ship owned by the US and flagged by the Marshall Islands, but neither of them hit the ship.

The military spokesperson of Yemen said that the ship was hit directly.

A ship owned by the US was hit on Wednesday, shortly after the US labeled the Houthis as a terrorist group.

On Thursday, the leader of the Houthis said it was a great honor to directly confront Israel, the US, and the UK. He spoke with a lot of energy.

Abdul Malik al-Houthi said that the attack on our people is a violation of our country’s rights and a direct attack on our people.

The Houthis started attacking ships in November because they said it was in response to Israel’s military action in Gaza. Since then, the group has carried out many attacks on large ships traveling through the Red Sea, which is a very busy route for ships.

The US and UK attacked many Houthi targets with air strikes on January 11th. The attacks started because Houthi forces did not stop attacking despite being warned to stop by Australia, Bahrain, the Netherlands and Canada.

UK island base unsuitable for immigration – UN

0

The UN agency for refugees said it’s not good for migrants to stay in a faraway place in the Indian Ocean with a secret UK-US military base. They got permission to visit and saw that it’s not a good place for migrants to stay for a long time.

Many Sri Lankan Tamils have been stuck for more than two years in a temporary camp on Diego Garcia.

This is the first time people have asked for asylum in this place.

The UK government said it was searching for a “solution that will last a long time”.

“The health and safety of migrants is the most important thing. ” The spokesperson said that the top importance of the British Indian Ocean Territory administration is to make sure it stays safe and well-managed. The official name of the islands is British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).

UNHCR people went to Diego Garcia near the end of 2023 with help from the UK government. They were allowed to go to the island for the first time since the migrants arrived over two years ago.

The UN agency said it was “checking with officials” about what it had found.

A person speaking for the military said that Diego Garcia is an island with a military base and almost no people living there. It’s not a good place for people to live for a long time.

“We want the UK to fairly and quickly decide on the pending claims and help those who need international protection, following the rules of international law. ”

The first group of Tamils arrived on Diego Garcia in October 2021 because their boat got into trouble while they were trying to sail to Canada, as told by the migrants and officials.

The island is far away from other people, and unauthorized visitors are not allowed.

The group’s later requests for protection were the first ever to be made in Biot. This area is said to be different from the UK and the Refugee Convention does not apply there.

Many people in the group say they are connected to the old Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka. The rebels lost in the war that ended in 2009. They also say they have been treated badly because of this.

Hunger protest

Asylum seekers say the conditions on the island are very bad, but because of the island’s unique laws, they are stuck in a difficult situation.

Many people have tried to hurt or kill themselves. Lawyers say children have also gone on hunger strikes.

Our lives are boring and dull. “I feel like I am just existing, not really living,” a man told the media.

Attorneys helping people seeking safety on Diego Garcia say there are still around 60 people on the island. Many people have been moved to Rwanda for help after trying to end their own lives.

The media was made knows that this agreement is different from the government’s plan to send some asylum seekers to an East African country. This plan passed an important step in Parliament this week.

“Our clients have been stuck on Diego Garcia for more than two years and still haven’t had their requests for international protection approved,” explained Tessa Gregory, one of the group’s lawyers.

The things they are going through. The conditions are really bad and not at all good for a group that has children and people who have been through torture and sexual violence.

Ms Gregory said that British lawyers representing the migrants want to go to the island.

Five people have been given permission to stay in another country, but we don’t know yet where they will go.

The government is helping other countries accept people who cannot go back to their own country safely.

The government has said to the BBC that they take all claims of mistreatment very seriously and look into them completely.

President Hichilema Looses Massive popularity in Barotseland over his statement on Barotseland- BBN

By Barotseland Broadcasting Network

President Hakainde Hichilema Looses Massive popularity in BArotseland over his reckless statement on BArotseland.

Majority of people of BArotseland, yesterday were shocked and injured to hear a reckless statement coming from the person they trusted and believed to be leader with knowledge of the genesis of this failed unitary state between BArotseland and Northern Rhodesia now called Zambia.

Lozi people were saddened with the statement and majority have vowed never ever to vote for him. In communities, homes , bus stations, WhatsApp groups and working places Majority of the Lozi speaking people hailing from BArotseland expressed sadness and were injured over the statement that will heavily cost president Hakainde Hichilema come 2026 General elections.

Including his party members, MPs, ministers and supporters have disclosed that it’s time to show the Tonga speaking people that time of using and riding on lozis has come to end.

First and foremost, we appeal to all of us who hail from Barotseland to cease fire over the remarks by the head of state.

In life, every circumstance or situation we find ourselves in is for a special purpose which is never foretold.

The Republican President has made it very clear and courageously told the nation that Western Province or Barotseland is not a Country but part and parcel of a unitary state of a Country called Zambia. This is the plain truth without any malice.

The President is well versed with the history of this failed unitary union Country. He is very much aware of the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 and all its contents which were binding on both parties (territories). He knows that the Agreement was abrogated.

The President emphasized the point of unity and interdependence in resource mobilization and equal distribution to Provinces. we presume this is the genesis of the subject at hand.

The questions which begs for serious answers therefore are, did the President use the right channel of communication or the right platform? What necessitated him to come out in that fashion?

In our humble opinion, this may result into a blessing in disguise to us the people of Barotseland or Western Province. He has opened a Pandora Box for himself. He has indirectly called on us to seriously engage him over pertinent matters which have been pending for a long time.

Western Province has been deliberately starved development by successive Governments because of the Barotseland Agreement of 1964.

In BArotseland currently,

1. We don’t have good standard road infrastructure to connect all our 18 districts found in BArotseland.

2. We don’t have Higher learning institutions (Universities and Colleges) just like in other Provinces.

3. We don’t have Modern Government buildings infrastructure such as hospitals, Civic Centers, Sports facilities, modern Local Authorities Markets etc in our districts. Just like in other Provinces.

4. We don’t have any well Established industries and factories by reputable companies.

6. The Zambian government is illegally ruling this beautiful and historic region without any law backing it. If he say his government it’s a government of rule of law , then he is lying and he should stop going to church and worshiping God while you are suppressing others.

5. Western Province’s 128 Chiefdoms are not recognized by law and Area Chiefs in charge of these Chiefdoms are not gazetted and nowhere near Subsidies (salary) and other incentives offered by the Central Government as compared to other Provinces. Recently the New Dawn Government reproduced the 1958 Chiefs’ Boundary Map. The Map serves no purpose to Western Province. Our Area Chiefs who appear on our NRCs have been reduced to a useless and meaningless title under the Zambian Statutes of Silalo Indunas.

As people of Barotseland, it pains to hear the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development including the President himself saying that they are building Chiefs’ Palaces yet they have nothing to point at in Western Province.

The Litunga and 6 others presiding at Naliele in Kaoma, Mwandi in Sesheke, Namayula in Lukulu, Litunga la mbowela, Mboanjikana of Kalabo and Lukama for Shangombo are not really Chiefs themselves. They don’t even have Chiefdoms as per the Zambian scenario. They are classified as Chiefs for the sole purpose of being included on the Zambian Chiefs’ Payroll.

The Barotseland system of Governance is totally different from what the Government and most Zambians think.

Let us calm down and avoid being emotional. This matter is beyond politics.

We submit.

Corruption forces PF Chipangali MP to join UPND

Corruption forces PF Chipangali MP to join UPND

These are a fleet of very expensive vehicles which “President” Andrew Lubusha (as he prefers to be called) owned during his happy PF days. For example he has this Range Rover which is customized and his name is embedded on it. These expensive vehicles are part of the many properties Lubusha amassed during PF. But shortly after UPND formed government, Lubusha was visited by Law Enforcement Agencies over his unexplained properties. All of them have been grabbed from him.

However, he is part of the beneficiaries of feeder roads contracts during PF. It is said he also obtained various payments in feeder road contracts but did not deliver works.

Meanwhile, Lubusha is seeking for protection in UPND administration so that his cases of suspected proceeds of crime and corruption can be swept under the carpet by UPND.

During PF, Lubusha was a small god in Eastern Province. He banned Johabe Bus Services from operating in the Eastern route because the owner was a party member of UPND.

Andrew Lubusha behaved like he owned Edgar Lungu in PF. He was very powerful in Eastern and more powerful than public service office bearers such as Police, OP, DCs and many others. In fact, he would personally transfer anyone he considered inimical to his personal interest.

UPND are set to welcome and embrace Lubusha because they want him to stand in Chipangali as their MP in 2026. Chipangali remains underdeveloped because Lubusha is busy trying to find a loophole in the ruling party so that they can help him kill his corruption cases and therefore, retain all his properties back which as suspected to be proceeds of crime.

DR Congo’s Election – the Key to Félix Tshisekedi’s Victory

0

ANALYSIS
By Albert Kasanda
On Sunday 31 December 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced the preliminary results of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s presidential election held on 20 December. The incumbent president, Félix Tshisékédi, was declared the winner with 73.34% of the votes cast, while Moise Katumbi was credited with 18.03% and Martin Fayulu with 5.33%.

There have been calls to cancel the elections by opposition candidates who present themselves as the victims of a plot hatched between the electoral commission and the outgoing president. However, the way in which this dispute is framed overlooks their own campaign mistakes and the impact these had on the vote. An examination of the campaign strategies of each of the three main candidates would provide fresh insights into the debate surrounding Tshisékédi’s overwhelming support.

Two sides competed in the presidential election: the opposition and the outgoing majority. The opposition made a forceful commitment for inclusive, transparent and peaceful elections conducted in accordance with the deadlines set by the constitution. But internal divisions within the opposition became apparent. The failure of the Pretoria talks to designate a common candidate was a telling example.

Its bid for power in disarray, the opposition fragmented its votes and compromised its chances of success in a single-round ballot. In this type of election, every vote won or lost counts enormously. The proliferation of opposition candidates weakens the opposition, potentially favouring the incumbent.

A divided opposition

Moise Katumbi has financial power, which he did not hesitate to flaunt. But he had challenges in running his campaign. He failed to establish an effective socio-political network in the country. The lack of influential local connections capable of getting his message across to the grassroots level and crafting an image of unity proved to be a major flaw.

His allies also proved to be ineffective. These included Matata Ponyo, a former prime minister of Joseph Kabila; Franck Diongo, MP and president of the Lumumbist Progressive Movement; Seth Kikuni, businessman and president of Piste pour l’Emergence party; and Delly Sessanga, MP and president of the Envol political party.

The secessionist rhetoric exemplified by Christian Mwando Simba, from Katanga province, undermined his cause in a country that has grappled with foreign aggression for three decades. Patriotism prevailed over the secessionist threat. His campaign’s main theme, centred on criticising the outgoing president, proved to be highly unproductive.

Recurring contradictions

An unsuccessful candidate in the 2018 presidential election, Martin Fayulu faced another setback in 2023.

Fayulu had not prepared his supporters for a real political comeback. During this latest campaign, he was conspicuous for his disastrous political improvisation. The political party he heads, Engagement for Citizenship and Development (Ecidé), decided not to take part in the December 2023 elections, which he criticised as lacking transparency. As a result, Ecidé members were instructed not to submit their candidatures for national or even provincial seats. Ignoring this instruction, Fayulu was the only member of his party to submit his candidacy for the presidential election.

He perceived his decision as a way of meeting the Lamuka platform demands. Lamuka had supported him in the 2018 presidential election. However, Fayulu underestimated the transformation of the platform since 2018. Many of his allies and key supporters at the time, including Jean-Pierre Bemba and Moise Katumbi, had switched sides to protect their own vested interests. So Fayulu ventured alone into an exhausting and risky political battle. This paradox provides insight into his defeat and downfall as opposition leader.

Tshisekedi’s experience

Educated by his long experience of political struggle, Tshisekedi had prepared his campaign meticulously. As soon as he was freed from the stranglehold of Joseph Kabila’s Common Front for Congo, with whom he had signed an agreement to form a parliamentary majority and govern together, Tshisekedi cast a wide net. He recruited major political figures and many defectors from the Common Front for Congo. He brought them all under the political banner of the ruling coalition, the Sacred Union of the Nation. The involvement of these players in his campaign provided him with a broad territorial network and a foothold in various regions of the country.

Playing on patriotic sentiments, Tshisekedi won backing from the Congolese for condemning the aggression of the DRC by Rwanda through armed groups despite the somewhat mixed record of his first term. He did not sugarcoat the challenges and achievements during his initial term. Instead, Tshisekedi presented the people with a choice between building on the progress made, such as constructing hospitals and roads, free primary education, the initiation of universal health coverage, and so on, and the arduous task of starting all over again from scratch. The people responded through the ballot box.

A long-term process

As the organiser of the electoral process, CENI had to contend with numerous challenges. These included adherence to the electoral timetable, the inclusion and equal treatment of candidates, transparency, logistics and the security of the electoral system.

Election observation missions authorised for this election praised the efforts of the commission. Their reports not only highlighted the recognised operational challenges and occasional acts of incivility but also concurred on the temporary ranking of candidates for the presidential position, with Tshisekedi, in the lead.

While deploring confirmed acts of incivility, these missions made various recommendations for enhancing the electoral process. However, they all downplayed the impact of the observed irregularities on the ranking of the candidates.

Moving forward

Some of the contenders, including Constant Mutamba and Noël Tshianyi Muadiamvita, bowed to the provisional verdict of the electoral commission and congratulated the declared winner. Of course, another group of opponents, including Katumbi, Fayulu and Kikuni, are contesting the result, describing it as fraudulent. They are also refusing to go before the courts and tribunals responsible for post-election disputes to assert their rights. This refusal is based on the idea that the Constitutional Court is in the pay of the outgoing regime, or even worse, under the control of Tshisekedi’s ethnic group.

In any case, it is to be feared that those refusing legal avenues in favour of street protests may be undermining the ongoing democratic transition. Democracy is a long-term process that evolves in fits and starts. Each nation lays the foundations as its history unfolds. The DRC is still in its infancy. Learning from mistakes and looking resolutely to the future, in a constructive spirit, would be the best option. Critical vigilance is needed to prevent further manipulation.

ARMY OFFICER NARRATES HOW STEP MUM WAS PICKED FOR ASSAULTING BABY CLASS PUPIL

A COURT heard how the military officer’s wife accused of torturing her four-year-old step son was picked from a military camp and later charged for assault.

An army officer testified how Longwe Ngosa, 29, picked from her house and handed over to police for allegedly assaulting her four-year-old step son, whose assault experience was shared online in a viral clip.

In this case, Ngosa is charged with assault on a child where it is alleged that between April 1 and July 31, 2023, Ngosa, allegedly assaulted IB, a child under the age of 16 years, thereby occasioning him actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that the accused used a knife and hosepipe to inflict pain on the baby class pupil.

Testifying in the case, Steven Chewe, of Apollo military camp, Lusaka west, narrated that on August 4, 2023, there was a report from the officer commanding captain.

“Our officer commanding showed me a video which was trending on social media and he asked us to go and find out the location of the child in the [Facebook] video. We went and found the boy and the mother in the same military camp,” he said.

Mr Mbewe said he was in the company of some officers and the accused’s female neighbours when he arrived at Ngosa’s house.

“We asked the madam [Ngosa] to bring the boy. The boy was brought and we noticed that he had a bandage which we had seen in the video. We asked her some questions as to why the boy was sleeping when his friends were playing outside,” he said.

Mr Mbewe said in response, Ngosa said the boy was not feeling well.

“She requested that the two female neighbours should leave the house. She apologized for what she did,” he said.

Mr Mbewe said the matter was later reported to police and the accused was picked for investigations.

Trial continues next Wednesday, January 24.

HIGH POVERTY LEVELS IN MUCHINGA PROVINCE WORRIES M’MEMBE

HIGH POVERTY LEVELS IN MUCHINGA PROVINCE WORRIES M’MEMBE

….the province is ranked as the poorest province in the country

Shiwang’andu District… Thursday January 18, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe has expressed concern over the high poverty levels in Muchinga Province saying it is saddening that the province has the highest proportion of the population that is poor at 82.6 percent.

According to the poverty assessment in Zambia report conducted by the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) together with its partners indicated that Muchinga province has the highest proportion of the population that is poor at 82.6 percent, followed by Western and Northern provinces.

Dr. M’membe says these statistics are worrying to leaders who mean well for the people.

Dr. M’membe said this when he together with Shiwang’andu Constituency PF Member of Parliament Hon Stephen Kampyongo campaigned for PF and Socialist Party candidates for Mayembe ward by election at Lukaka and Chilombo villages in Shiwang’andu district today.

The two political parties have decided to work together in liberating the people from what they have termed as ‘total sufferings under the UPND administration’.

“Today, we are embarrassed as the people of Muchinga Province because poverty levels have risen in the two years of UPND in office. We (Muchinga Province) are on top of the list as the poorest province in the country followed by Western and Northern Province is in the third position. Before UPND came into office, the poverty levels in the province stood at 69.3 percent, we were number five. In the last two and half years, we have moved from number five to one. On number three we have Northern Province with 78 percent. We need to liberate ourselves from this embarrassing statistics,” he said.

“If you look at the top the in terms of having high poverty levels in the country, Muchinga is on top, followed by Western, in the third position there is Northern, fourth is Luapula and on the firth is Eastern Province. Very few people will respect the poor people.”

He said it is disheartening that the UPND can think of going to Mayembe ward in Shiwang’andu district, of Muchinga Province with the highest poverty levels in the country and start lining up the people and giving them handouts.

Dr M’membe informed the people that the UPND does not love the people of Mayembe just because they are giving them money, food and other materials saying they are doing so because of the pending by-election.

And Hon Kampyongo said the UPND are panicking after seeing that the PF and Socialist Party are working together during campaigns.

“You can see that they are in panic mode. They are now busy dishing out money and material things because they want to win this by-election. They don’t have a proper message to tell the people because they have messed up all sectors. Up to now, you have not received the full packages under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP), so what can they tell you about fertilizer and seeds? This is why they are even engaging in acts of violence because they have sensed that they are loosing this by-election,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UPND tried to provoke the opposition convoy as the two leaders in the company of their structures and supporters were moving from Lukaka to Chilombo where they were expected to have a meeting.

The UPND were armed with offensive weapons and were freely using them to threaten their opponents but the two leaders informed their supporters not to fight back.

Out of shame, the UPND proceeded in the direction of Kankolo.

The PF Mayembe ward candidate Morgan Malama and his Socialist Party counterpart Wigan Mubanga were present during the meetings.

WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY DG ARRESTED FOR CORRUPTION

The Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested and charged the Director General for Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) Kenneth Nyundu for corruption involving over K700,000.00. Nyundu, of Plot 13844 Chalala in Lusaka, has been charged with three (3) counts of Abuse of Authority of Office contrary to Section 21(c) of the Anti-Corruption Act Number 3 of 2012.

Details in the first count are that Kenneth Nyundu on dates unknown but between 5th February, 2020 and 30th July, 2022 in Lusaka, jointly and whist acting together with other persons unknown, with intent to deceive or defraud, did make a false document namely Performance Based Contract dated 5th February 2021, a contract allegedly to have been made between Water Resource Management Authority and himself and purporting to show that he was entitled to 20% Housing Allowance and 35% Vehicle Allowance, net of tax of his basic monthly salary when infact not.

Details in the third count are that Kenneth Nyundu on dates unknown but between 5th February, 2021 and 30th July, 2022 in Lusaka, dishonestly obtained an accumulated sum of k709,366.92 as Vehicle allowance from Water Resources Management Authority by falsely pretending that he had purchased a vehicle namely Toyota Hilux from a named car dealer when in fact not.

The arrest follows investigations conducted on allegation that Nyundu made a false document, namely his contract of employment and did insert the words ‘net of tax’ to the false contract document and this triggered payment to him of more money in allowances which he was not entitled to. Further that although Nyundu was entitled to a Vehicle Allowance, this was only to be effected when he purchases a Personal To Holder Motor Vehicle. However, it is alleged that Nyundu did not purchase a Personal To Holder Motor Vehicle but was using an institutional vehicle. It is alleged that Nyundu instead did present to WARMA a contract of purchase of a vehicle from a named car dealer purporting to show that he had purchased a vehicle when in fact not.

Nyundu has been released on bond and is expected to appear in court soon.

S3x is “a gift from God” – Pope Francis

Pope Francis said that God gave us the gift of sexual pleasure, and we should use it carefully and with patience.

He also said that watching pornography can lead to addiction because it gives pleasure without a real relationship.

The Pope was talking to a lot of people in the Vatican on Wednesday.

The sermon was about the Pope talking about the bad things caused by wanting too much pleasure.

The pope said that desire for sex ruins relationships between people and he also said that the news every day shows this.

“He asked how many good relationships have turned bad over time. ”

The Pope said this a few days after his new chief of teaching, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, was criticized for a book he wrote and published in the late 1990s called Mystical Passion: Spirituality and Sensuality.

The book is no longer available to buy. It talked about sex and gave a lot of details about how men and women feel during orgasms. Cardinal Fernández talked to a Catholic website called Crux and said he wrote the book when he was younger, and he definitely wouldn’t write it now.

Some people who have traditional views have criticized the book and said it was unsuitable for Cardinal Fernández to be in charge of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Pope Francis and Cardinal Fernández have upset conservative Catholic people before.

In December, Cardinal Fernández made a new rule that allows priests to bless same-sex couples. Pope Francis also agreed with this rule.

Even though Cardinal Fernández said the position doesn’t make same-sex couples okay in the Catholic Church, many conservatives still think it’s a problem.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller, who was in charge of the Church’s teachings under Pope Benedict XVI, strongly criticized the Vatican’s document. Cardinal Müller said online that a priest blessing a gay union would be a very disrespectful and offensive thing to do.

“Cardinal Müller said that according to the rules for this kind of blessings, people could even give blessings to places like abortion clinics or groups like the mafia. ”

Leaders from all over the world spoke out against the decision. This includes conservative Americans who have always been against the Pope’s plans to change the Catholic Church.

Tensions got really bad when the Pope kicked a US Cardinal, Raymond Burke, out of his apartment at the Vatican and stopped paying him.

Arnold Schwarzenegger imprisoned over EU levy on expensive watches

0

Arnold Schwarzenegger was detained at a German airport for failing to declare the expensive watch he was carrying to sell for charity.

The famous actor was delayed for three hours at Munich airport on Wednesday.

An inquiry into suspected tax dodging was started because the watch was supposed to be sold in the European Union (EU).

Under EU rules, if you bring more than €10,000 in cash or valuable items, you need to report it.

But someone who knows about it said to CBS News, the BBC’s American partner, that Schwarzenegger was not told to complete a form.

The person who is an actor, politician and someone who worries about climate change, was finally able to give the tax money, but had to solve a lot of problems first.

After the first card machine didn’t work, they found out the nearest bank was closed and the ATM would only let them take out a small amount of money. So the 76-year-old had to wait for customs officials to bring a new card machine.

The actor’s spokesperson told a German magazine that the airport incident was really funny and would make a great police movie full of mistakes.

Bild reported that he was not upset about the incident. They published a picture of Schwarzenegger smiling and holding a box with a note that said “For Austria. ”

Local news reported that the watch was specially made for the actor from the Terminator movie by a fancy watch company called Audemars Piguet. Their watches can cost a lot of money, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The watch was going to be sold at a dinner to raise money for The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative in Kitzbuhel, Austria, which is about 89 km (55 miles) from Munich. The dinner was going to happen on Thursday.

A statement about the event happening at the fancy Stanglwirt hotel said that there will be art, signed items, and experiences from sports and movies available for purchase.

Auction information for the watch, found by Bild, said it was one of just 20 made, and would come with a picture of Arnold in his famous pose and the words “Arnold Classic”. The bidding price starts at €50,000.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA ADVISED TO IGNORE UNFOUNDED CRITICISMS

Chief Chitembo of Ng’umbo people in Chifunabuli District of Luapula Province has advised Republican President Hakainde Hichilema to ignore people who want to distract him as he develops the country.

Chief Chitembo has observed that certain criticisms towards the Republican President are not genuine as they are just aimed at making him lose focus of the developmental agenda he has for the country.

Speaking when Luapula Province Minister, Njawva Simutowe, called on him at his palace, the Chief indicated that some people will never appreciate what the President is doing such as increasing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He pointed out that as a country, there is a need for all to draw a line between development and politics so that ordinary people are not affected in the process.

“It is not always that we should be doing politics as a country, sometimes we need to work together so that we can develop the country, Constituency Development Fund is one such vehicle which can enable us to achieve this,” he said.

The Chief explained that traditional leaders are determined to ensure that their Chiefdoms are developed hence they will always work with the government of the day.

Chief Chitembo further indicated that as traditional leaders, their focus is to push for programmes which will help to improve the livelihood of the people and not to do politics in their chiefdoms.

“The people themselves have a right to belong to any political party of their choice but for us chiefs it is to make sure that we don’t get involved into politics but rather push for development in our respective chiefdoms. Our people need development and we have been part of the government agenda so that our people can benefit,” he said.

And Luapula Province Minister, Njawva Simutowe, called on traditional leaders to help government monitor projects under CDF.

Mr Simutowe explained that the government understands the important role that traditional leaders play in ensuring that development is taken to their chiefdoms.

He disclosed that in the new CDF guidelines, a Chief will have representation in the CDF committee, so that they are aware of the projects which will be taking place in their areas.

“Government is committed to ensuring that the welfare of the people is improved. Through the Constituency Development Fund, government wants to ensure that development reaches all parts of the country, this is why in the new CDF guidelines, representatives of chiefs will be in CDF committees,” he said

The Minister reiterated that the government will continue to work with traditional leaders in ensuring that development is taken to all parts of the country.

TB Joshua Is Alive, He Tricked People To Escape Arrest- Prof Ex

Many commentators are alleging that the disgraced Nigerian prophet TB Joshua is alive, contrary to news that he died and was buried. Commenting tonight are two key whistleblowers over the BBC reported rape cases.

Analysts are saying as a con artist, this would be the most expected thing TB Joshua could do after noticing investigations are hotting up against him.

The below program explores the suggestion that there is a high probability that TB Joshua, the late Nigerian televangelist faked his own death. The absence of an independent autopsy and Joshua’s history of orchestrating elaborate deceptions in the name of miracles raise questions about the authenticity of his reported demise.

The Lack of Independent Autopsy:
One key factor contributing to the suspicion is the absence of an independent autopsy to verify TB Joshua’s cause of death. Given his history of manufacturing miracles and the serious allegations against him, a comprehensive examination by impartial medical professionals would be crucial in confirming the authenticity of his passing. The absence of such an examination fuels speculation about the possibility of him orchestrating his own death.

History of Deception:
The BBC’s extensive investigation, independently corroborated by numerous external journalists, exposes Joshua’s involvement in faking miracles over a span of 30 years. The report highlights a range of deceptive tactics, including the operation of an “emergency department,” the use of drugs to manipulate visitors, brainwashing followers, offering bribes, and producing fake medical certificates. This extensive history of deception strengthens the argument that Joshua might have faked his own death as another elaborate scheme.

Manipulation and Control:
The report details how followers and even emergency department workers were manipulated into participating in the deception. The use of brainwashing techniques, coercion, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals raises questions about the extent to which Joshua could control those around him. This control dynamic suggests that orchestrating a fake death could be within the realm of possibility.

Bribes and Pretense:
The revelation that disciples were charged with finding people in need of money to pretend to be sick for staged healing events adds another layer to the speculation. If Joshua could orchestrate scenarios involving individuals pretending to be sick, it raises the question of whether he could have orchestrated his own death as part of an elaborate plan.

While this report presents a speculative analysis based on the lack of an independent autopsy and TB Joshua’s history of deception, it is essential to note that concrete evidence is needed to confirm or refute the possibility of him faking his own death. Further investigations, including an impartial autopsy and scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his reported demise, would be necessary to provide a more conclusive assessment.- zimeye

It is a fair result, says Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant

It is a fair result – Grant

It is a fair result, says Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant.

And Congo coach Sebastian Desabre says his squad prepared well to quell the Zambian threat from quick attackers.

Speaking during a post-match press conference Grant said Congo had quality players playing in top leagues and made Zambia struggle against them.

Zambia and Congo drew 1-1 in their opening Group F tussle at the Laurent Pokou Stadium.

“We know that Congo has quality players who play in some of the best leagues in the world and in Europe. I think wee did a good job, but we couldn’t pass the ball so well because they marked us so well, we scored, and they scored from a big mistake from us, but you can say it was a fair result,” he said.

Grant said that Congo posed a bigger threat to Zambia but were not sharp in front of goal.

“I think the draw is a fair result because even Congo who were sharper than us wasted their chances. Congo have a very good team, very balanced team good midfield players, defenders fantastic but still a very good result for us but even when you are winning you are always disappointed,” he said.

“I think we didn’t pass the ball as we wanted but Congo defended very well, they marked very well. It was very difficult to score chances against them we need to prepare more.”

He added: “You also need to remember that we had a lot of best 11 players that do not play regularly with their clubs, so they are not 100 percent fit. They have just played three or four games over the last months that’s why I am happy because they were fighting throughout the game.”

And Desabre said not many people were aware of the quality of his players.

“I think we had a plan because Zambia is very strong with these players but today (Wednesday) I think the difference with my team is we played a very good game. A lot of people don’t know the speed and the quality of this team, but they are very strong players, but my team played good football and were fantastic,” he said.

Zambia’s next game is on Sunday against Tanzania at the Laurent Pokou Stadium.

Govt employee salaries consume 42% of national budget – HH

Govt employee salaries consume 42% of national budget – HH

President Hakainde Hichilema – HH has revealed that government workers that are just over 400,000 individuals consume 42% of the entire annual government revenues, a situation he described as unsustainable and has led to lack of funds for investment.

And a check by Zambian Business Times – ZBT on official statistics shows that Zambia has an average of about 10 million adult population, meaning that 9.4 million adult citizens who are not employed in government, plying their trade in the informal sector have to fend off the remaining 66% of the budget.

This clearly shows that the government annual budget spend is anchored on consumption expenditure rather than investments, a situation that has perpetuated a vicious poverty cycle and stagnated economy.

Ironically, however, it is the new dawn government itself that had aggressively increased the government payroll in its first year by employing over 30,000 teachers and over 11,000 health workers.

HH challenged his meeting of Permanent Secretaries – PS’s to do more and improve on their delivery to grow the economy so that this ratio or percentage of 42% can be corrected. He urged them to do more by channeling more resources to investment than consumption.

But analysts say it’s failure by successive government to leverage the massive copper industry in generating billions of dollars in annual revenues that continues to elude even the new dawn government which is the elephant in the room.

Large scale copper mines are currently enjoying tax incentives and VAT refunds, the economy has not been rebased for over a decade such that even targets for industry tax and non tax revenues are not based on current and relevant data.

More over, civil servants are not even well paid in real terms, when you look at the escalated cost of living and perpetual depreciation of the Kwacha. With the Kwacha to dollar rate currently at about K26 to US$1, with an average salary of K7,000 for the larger government workers groups, this works out to a monthly salary of a paltry $270 per month.

Prominent constitutional lawyer John Sangwa SC had revealed during Radio Phoenix’s let the people talk program that high court Judges get about $1,000 (K26,000) per month, and these are considered among the most admired high paying jobs in government.

With these numbers, it’s very clear that Governments key challenge is to expand the local private sector and local industries that would lead to generating more tax and non tax revenues. The need to leverage the massive copper mining industry can not be overemphasized.

RESPONSE TO FRED M’MEMBE’S CORRUPTION CLAIMS

By Mark Simuuwe

RESPONSE TO FRED M’MEMBE’S CORRUPTION CLAIMS.

I saw a malicious propaganda statement by Fred M’membe in which he was blatantly making claims of corruption under the New Dawn Government.

Perhaps a closer look at specifics will help us assess his reasoning :

1. Firstly , it is a waste of time for him to talk about corruption when he has never reported anybody for corruption at the ACC as required by law . He has not also told us what has been stolen and how much and from who ?

2. Fred M’membe makes claims on Hon Stanley Kakubo who has not been charged or convicted for any corruption allegation. Nobody to date has told us what offence Stanley Kakubo has committed not even Fred himself .

3. Fred continues discussing corruption without telling us who stole what and how much was stolen from government , which makes his claims baseless and a waste of time .

4. He is talking of the UPND constitution which he does not understand by claiming that it is dictatorial.

Before we lecture him on the UPND constitution, he has not told us how he appointed new members in Socialist Party , and how only him knows how much money is given to the party by his sponsors .

Fred says the UPND constitution is dictatorial ; does he want the UPND constitution to be crafted like his PF constitution which , at face value , politicized the government institutions by providing a clause that all government institutions needed to be headed by the PF members ? Perhaps that explains why PF were claiming levies in markets and bus stops instead of the Council workers .

Like the PF constitution which Fred supported ,not all positions in the UPND are elective . For purposes of ethnic balancing , some positions require appointees . The logic behind is that when some positions are subjected to open elections, some ethnic groups will be completely eliminated from the party structures.

This is how UPND managed to have ethnic representation in all structures from the NMC to the lowest structures, the Branches national wide .

This is how smart the UPND constitution is especially when it comes to fulfilling the clause in the constitution of having a national character.

Even these appointees have to be ratified by the National Management Committee which is the supreme organ of the UPND .

5. The PF constitution was drafted in a manner that encouraged corruption by allowing PF to head all government institutions.

6 Clearly , Fred has no message for the people of Zambia and he will continue waffling as time for him to tell citizens what agenda he has for them is being squandered .

7. He is also talking of the President declaring his assets ; currently no law outside the election period compels the president to declare his assets.

Let Fred give us one law under the laws of Zambia which provides for his claim ; anyway , we know he would not do that because such a law does not exist and no President , not even President Michael Sata did that .

8. Has Fred M’membe himself declared assets outside the election? Has he told us how much he remitted to ZRA when he was running the Post ?

9. Fred has also not told Zambians how much a capitalist he is that he had to make sure he kicked out Anderson Kambela Mazoka from holding shares in the Post Newspaper so that he could be the only major shareholder in the Post Newspapers.

Socialism deals with profit sharing with others yet he failed to demonstrate profit sharing with anybody . How can he even tell us about socialism today ?

10. How did Fred fail to remit Pay as You Earn after deducting from workers at the Post Newspaper as per ZRA report ?

Fred is a type of human being who fails to make sensible arguments to appeal to citizens.

We challenge Fred M’membe to go and report corruption of any individual at the ACC . This will help us see through his malicious publications.

IT’S JUDGMENT YEAR FOR UPND…end of 2024 people won’t expect stories from the bar, warns Andyford

IT’S JUDGMENT YEAR FOR UPND…end of 2024 people won’t expect stories from the bar, warns Andyford

By Fanny Kalonda

THIS year will be the most significant judgment year since the UPND formed government, says People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) president Andyford Banda.

He says the UPND government must be a genius to only rely on the mining sector to turnaround the economy.

Banda said if UPND government had ideas they spoke about when in opposition, they would have implemented them immediately after winning the elections.

“Let the government do what they have to do to revive the mining sector. But they should know that end of 2024 the people will not expect stories from the bar,” he said. “We are rooting for the government to turnaround things. But our bone of contention is based on the lack of inclusivity of diverse ideas which can turnaround the economy as already explained. For emphasis’ sake they are just lip-service. And for crying out loud if the UPND government had these ideas they would have implemented them immediately after winning the elections. Today it would have been reports of progress. We mean ideas that have nothing to do with mining, debt restructuring and IMF. While the UPND will be judged on 13th August 2026 when people go the polls, this year will be the most significant judgement year since they formed government. While some of us feel there must be aggressive chase in alternative sectors, it’s clear that the UPND’s high hopes lie on debt restructuring and mining sector. From our side that’s the only area we see a clear plan even if the projected results are not quantified. Understandably, if we are to go by what the finance minister said, the ramping up of production at Kansanshi and Lumwana, the over $1 billion investments in Luanshya’s Shaft 28, KCM and Mopani revival should definitely have some level of impact with all things being equal.”

Recently, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane said low copper production in 2023 adversely affected the exchange rate.

“For those of you who buy dollars thinking that I will keep on buying dollars because one day it will reach K100, please be careful. Be careful the kwacha is about to make a counterattack,” said Dr Musokotwane.

And Banda recalled Dr Musokotwane reporting that: “low copper production in 2023 adversely affected the exchange rate. Mining proceeds constitute over 90 per cent of Zambia’s forex earnings. We are on course to exchange rate stabilisation. Kasanshi & Lumwana are preparing to ramp-up production. Further, US $1 billion will be pumped in Luanshya Shaft 28. On KCM, a court determined creditor scheme of arrangement to be negotiated after which the asset will be handed over to Vedanta for pumping-in investment. On Mopani, the plan is to hand over to new investor at end of February. Before then, the investor will make cash injections in tranches of US $80 million & US $50 million. After handover, a further investment of US $490 million will be made.”

But Banda said an economy cannot grow in isolation adding that the mining sector cannot be the only sector to rely on.

“President HH and finance minister are so bullish that the expected revival of the mining sector and the expected conclusion of the debt restructuring will turnaround the economy and arrest the kwacha depreciation. ‘2024 will be a home run’ said the President in his end of year address. Is it an issue of being mathematically accurate like one plus is equal to two? It will be interesting to see how this plays out to arrest the main challenges the country is facing – unemployment, weak currency, high cost of fuel, in turn high cost of living, SMEs etc,” he said. “The UPND government must be a genius to only rely on the mining sector to turnaround the economy which has been with us since before independence. While the points advanced by the Minister of Finance are valid, our skepticism for a complete turnaround is based on the fact that an economy cannot grow in isolation. The mining sector cannot be the only sector to rely on due to various factors which some can be seen or unseen. Lack of aggression, clear creative deliberate plan by government to look into other sectors such as manufacturing, energy, financial services, ICT, agriculture. This at most sounds like lip service.”

Banda said the question should be “how do we stimulate impactful growth especially one that touches the most vulnerable in society”.

“The country’s challenges such as unemployment, hunger, poor rainfall pattern, cost of living caused by US dollar and low food production are too numerous to rest all our hopes on mining. Many developed economies around the world while keeping traditional sectors such as steel production and agriculture have evolved and graduated to new sectors that have come along the way because of various developments such as technology. This as a country we are not doing. We are stuck with only copper 60 years after independence. In the agriculture sector we are just sorting out problems to do with FISP and trying to do better than PF. Nothing extraordinary. In the ICT and financial services sectors we are just doing day to day jobs, nothing creative. We have not taken advantage of low hanging fruits that are there in other sectors,” he said. “The question we should be asking ourselves is how do we stimulate impactful growth especially one that touches the most vulnerable in society? We are in the midst of a cholera crisis that has been there before the UPND, but as of today outside passive media statements, we do not seem to have a plan on how to organise, modernise and upgrade our cities. Let us also remember that programmes such as the recent additional $187 million approved IMF extended credit facility disbursement which brings the total to $561 million has had no impact on the exchange rate. This means we should worry and see why we seem to be in the ‘laggards of the economic development project’.”

Banda said the biggest challenge the country is facing is unemployment and the mining sector only absorbs 2.1 per cent of the work force.

“So, the question is what happens if the mines expected to do so much are faced with various challenges such as flooding in the mines, low output maybe due to low ore grades, operation challenges, extended routine maintenance due to unforeseen occurrences, slump in copper prices? We must also remember that one of the biggest challenges we are facing is unemployment. The mining sector only absorbs 2.1 per cent of the work force. Mechanisation of the industry and the use of modern technology is affecting recruitment in the mining sector. How much impact do we expect in terms of job creation? Definitely very insignificant,” said Banda.

“For all that is worth, let the government do what they have to do to revive the mining sector but they should know that end of 2024, the people will not expect ‘stories from the bar’. It’s definitely a judgement year for the new dawn administration. All things being equal, the mining sector will be revived, debt restructuring will be finalised but our sole reliance on these won’t resolve the numerous challenges. Just as a perspective while we compare ourselves with Chile and DRC in terms of copper production, it’s important to note that we are lagging at around 700,000 metric tonnes per year while Chile and Congo produce 5.6 million MT and 1.8 million MT respectively per year. By 2022, Zambia was the ninth ranked country in terms of copper production and there are other countries such as US, China, Canada, Australia which produce more copper than Zambia, but mining is not the main sector. We have a lot of work ahead. We must aggressively diversify!”

Sierra Leone allows treason charged ex-president Koroma to leave the country

0

A former Sierra Leonean president has been granted permission to travel abroad on medical grounds despite facing treason charges.

The High Court ruling comes amid speculation that Ernest Bai Koroma has agreed to go into exile in Nigeria if charges against him were dropped.

He was accused of treason and other offences over a failed coup last November, in which some 20 people died.

Mr Koroma, who ruled between 2007 and 2018, denies these allegations.

A court order seen by the BBC on Wednesday shows Mr Koroma is allowed to travel to Nigeria for medical reasons.

The order stipulates that he must not stay there for more than three months and that he must appear before a Sierra Leonean magistrates court on 6 March.

During last year’s attack, gunmen broke into a military armoury and several prisons in capital city Freetown, freeing almost 2,000 inmates.

The government described it as an attempted coup and earlier this month, Mr Koroma was charged alongside 12 others suspects.

Anonymous sources from the United Nations and Ecowas, a bloc of West African countries, told the BBC that Ecowas had brokered a deal for Mr Koroma to go into exile in Nigeria if the charges were dropped.

The BBC also saw a letter saying Mr Koroma had agreed to the deal, which would see him continue to enjoy the perks of a former president even while he was in Nigeria.

However, Sierra Leone Foreign Minster Timothy Kabba previously told the BBC the government did not support the proposal, which he described as a “unilateral proposition” by the president of the Ecowas Commission.

Ecowas has been concerned about heightened tensions in Sierra Leone following the coup attempt. In the 1990s Ecowas closely witnessed the horrors of a brutal civil war in the West African country and sent a peacekeeping force to help end the conflict.

Some diplomats believe Mr Koroma will not return from Nigeria after travelling there on medical grounds and that the court order in effect allows him to go into exile as a way of restoring calm to the country.

Mr Koroma was president for 11 years until 2018, when current President Julius Maada Bio was elected.

The former president’s daughter, Dankay Koroma, has previously been named on a list of suspects wanted by police investigating the failed coup. She has not commented.

The attempted coup came five months after a disputed election which saw President Bio narrowly re-elected for a second term.

The results were rejected by Mr Koroma’s All People’s Congress. International observers also criticised the elections, highlighting a lack of transparency in the count. BBC News

Cuthbert Dube‘s ‘healing’ under TB Joshua comes under new scrutiny

When then Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) boss Cuthbert Dube “miraculously” rose from his wheelchair and walked at the behest of the late Nigerian prophet, T.B Joshua in 2010, it seemed as if a great act of God had taken place.

Dube had gone to Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations for deliverance after an ailment that had left the ZIFA boss wheelchair bound.

14-years-later many people are questioning whether Dube was indeed cured by Joshua, who a recent documentary by the BBC has outed as a purveyor of dubious miracles who even abused congregants and family members.

Describing the healing of Dube at the time, TB Joshua’s team wrote:

“Also during the service, we saw the spectacular demonstration of God’s power in the life of Mr Cuthbert Elkana Dube of Zimbabwe.

“A man of many titles including Group Chief Executive Officer of Premier Service Medical Aid Society, chairman of West End Hospital, chairman of West End Hospital, chairman of Premier Banking Corporation and president of Zimbabwe Football Association to name a few, had come to The SCOAN in a wheelchair, unable to walk due to a severe spinal cord problem.”

Also present during the “healing” ceremony was the businessman’s wife, who assisted in the process.

“As he sat in the front row close to the man of God, Prophet T.B. Joshua began to talk about his case. He then called Mr Cuthbert Elkana Dube’s wife forward to administer the anointing Water for salvation, healing and deliverance to her husband.

“He instructed her to apply it into his mouth, on his head, to the back of his neck and down his spine. He then said, “Stand Up!” and at that word – he did. The auditorium exploded into praise and worship to God for His mighty deeds.

“God has recently raised up three men of God from The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations for His glory and has been showing Himself strong in their lives.”

At the time, the miracle drew controversy, as there were allegations that Dube had paid for Joshua’s miracle.

“The Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) Overseer T. B Joshua has dismissed claims that the fired Zifa president Cuthbert Dube paid tens of thousands dollars as offering to the church ahead of getting his healing when he went for assistance to the Nigerian’s Lagos based church,” said a statement from SCOAN.

“Dube was healed by TB Joshua when he was wheelchair bound and was able to walk again. We want to emphasise that miracles, signs, wonders, deliverance and healing cannot be exchanged with money.

“They are not for sale but free gifts paid for by the blood Jesus Christ shed on the Cross of Calvary. We should therefore not trade the name of Jesus with money. Salvation is free.”

While there may be doubts about TB Joshua’s miracle, what is certain is that Dube does not seem to have been completely healed back in 2010.

In 2017, Justice Joseph Mafusire dismissed a case against Dube on grounds of ill-health, as he said the former PSMAS was not fit to stand trial.

Dube was accused of defrauding the medical aid company of US$23 million during his time there between 2009 and 2014.

HH OKAY WITH OVER ENROLLMENT BECAUSE IT IS A GOOD PROBLEM, SAYS UPND KATUBA MP

Chibombo, Thursday (January 18, 2024)
MEDIA STATEMENT

UPND Katuba Member of Parliament Mwabashike Nkulukusa says President Hakainde Hichilema is happy with over enrollment in schools because it is a good problem being addressed through building more classrooms.

Mr. Nkulukusa says the Head of State has prioritised Education of which he wants all children to be in school than growing up without education, hence the Free Education Policy.

The Lawmaker says the President is, therefore, aggressively and expeditiously addressing the challenge of congestion in classes by building more classrooms under the expanded Constituency Development Fund-CDF.

Mr. Nkulukusa has since paid tribute to ChildFund and the Transearch Foundation led by Ulrich Ackermann and his wife of Germany for their role in building additional classrooms in Chibombo District, Central Province.

Mr. Nkulukusa said this when ChildFund handed over to Government another 1 by 2 classroom block at Katete Primary School in Mungule District, built by the Ackermanns.

“President Hichilema has prioritised basic education as his number one priority. We are facing battles because some of the people want us to do roads first. Others are saying let us start with bridges first. Others want dip tanks but the President has given us a very strict instruction that first education, second health and then you can consider other priorities. So, as we try to develop this Country and this Constituency, we are towing the route of our Master who is the President. When people said we now have too many people enrolling in schools because of Free Education, the President told us that there are good problems and bad problems. The problem of over enrollment is a good problem because all you need is to put up a 1 by 2 classroom block,” he said.

At the same function, Chibombo District Council Chairperson Newton Nyeleti thanked the Ackermanns for the immense contribution to Zambia’s education sector, citing their earlier project, Namununga School, which includes classroom blocks, teachers houses, a health center with staff houses, a pre-school , a hammer mill, tuckshop, running water and solar energy.

“Last year, Mr. Ackermann handed over a water reticulation system at this school. By expanding classroom space, you have really lightened the burden of Government. The challenges of Chibombo are so enormous. Where Government would have spent some money, you as a cooperating partner has come in and we want to thank you,” he said.

Paul Kagame said he will give back the money to the UK if they don’t send any refugees to his country

0

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame said he will give back the money to the UK if they don’t send any refugees to his country as part of their agreement.

The UK has given £240m to Rwanda, and will give another £50m later. Until now, no refugees have been sent to the country.

When Kagame was asked why he was taking the money, he said: “I will only use it if those people come. ” “If they don’t show up, we can give the money back. ”

Rishi Sunak is about to have an important vote in parliament for his Rwanda bill.

The prime minister says his idea to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda will stop other people from trying to come to the UK in small boats.

Labour thinks it is a costly trick that won’t be effective, and they would get rid of the policy if they win the election.

Some of Mr Sunak’s own Conservative party members disagree with him. They think the rules are not strict enough and the government should be willing to break international laws to start deportation flights.

On Wednesday evening, Members of Parliament will vote on changes to a law and decide if the bill should move on to the next step.

The government thinks they will win the vote, even though many right-wing Tory MPs rebelled on Tuesday.

The BBC’s economics expert, Faisal Islam, quickly spoke to Paul Kagame at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The president did not say how much money he will give back to the UK, or when. When asked about the problems with the deal involving his country, Mr. Kagame said that it’s not Rwanda’s problem. The President said that the UK should handle the problem, not Rwanda.

Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said she is happy that Mr. Kagame offered to give back the money. She promised to use the money to handle asylum requests and to stop the criminal gangs involved in this situation.

She said in Davos that it would be better to use the money for controlling small boat crossings, which is essential and more likely to succeed.

Shock as South African dad allegedly impregnates 13-year-old daughter

0

Two men in Mpumalanga are facing charges of raping their daughters, police said on Wednesday.

One of the accused fathers is a 35-year-old man from Balfour, who appeared before the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for allegedly raping his step-daughter, aged eight.

The case against the man was postponed to January 18 for legal representation, according to Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

“For now, the suspect remains in custody,” he said.

“According to a report, the mother of the victim, who is also the spouse to the suspect, discovered this shocking news on Sunday, January 14 after noticing her companion with the minor’s underwear. It is said that she confronted him about it, of which he denied any wrongdoing.”

The girl’s mother became gravely concerned and immediately approached the eight-year-old girl, who opened up, telling of the “atrocities” allegedly committed by the stepfather.

The traumatic experience for the little girl is believed to have started last year.

“The matter was reported to the police, and a team of SAPS (SA Police Service) members from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit responded swiftly on the same day it was reported, hence the suspect was arrested and charged for raping a minor,” said Mdhluli.

In the second case, a 42-year-old man from Bethal allegedly raped his 13-year-old biological daughter.

The 42-year-old is set to return to the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Friday where he is expected to submit a formal bail application.

The accused man previously appeared in court on Tuesday last week.

“His court appearance came after his arrest by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit. It is further alleged that the victim was sexually victimised by the suspect during September 2023,” said Mdluli.

“Reports indicate that on January 4, it was discovered that the girl is pregnant. Thereafter, the suspect apparently threatened to kill the victim if she revealed to anyone about what has happened between them.”

It is also alleged that the 42-year-old man also offered the teenage girl money to buy her silence.

“Later that day, the stepmother approached the victim to ask her about the pregnancy and that is when she broke her silence and (revealed that) her father is the suspect,” said Mdhluli.

“The brave stepmother reportedly informed the girl’s biological mother, then the matter was eventually reported to the police. The case was assigned to the FCS unit which conducted the investigation.”

The rape suspect was then arrested and charged with rape on Monday last week.

Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has saluted the bravery of the two women who reported the abuse of vulnerable girls.

She said South Africa needed more such parents who don’t look away.

“We really need mothers that will blow the whistle and not tolerate such types of crime in the name of love at the expense of innocent children,” said Manamela.

Last year, the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg sentenced a 40-year-old Zimbabwean rapist to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to raping his 17-year-old biological daughter.

The father, whose name is withheld to protect the victim, raped the teenage girl for the first time in May 2022, and the ordeal continued into 2023.

At the time, Gauteng spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Phindi Mjonondwane, said the man called his daughter, who was based in Zimbabwe, to come to South Africa to assist her aunt, who had a newborn baby.

Russians throw snowballs at police weeks before election

0

Vladimir Putin seems to be losing control of Russia with only a few months before the presidential elections. There has been a rebellion in one of the regions that produces oil.

Video shows a group of people throwing snowballs at police officers with shields and batons in a town called Baymak in Bashkortostan.

5,000 people came together to protest against a political leader who supports Putin. This happened because a rights activist was sentenced to four years in prison for extremism.

Fights started outside the court building in support of Fail Alsynov, who was accused of ‘encouraging hatred between different groups of people’.

Police used tear gas and hit the protesters with their batons.

Videos online show people yelling ‘Gas’ and running away during what many are saying is the biggest protest in Russia since the war in Ukraine began.

One video showed a row of police hitting people with batons. In another place, a woman was begging the police to stop hitting someone who was on the ground.

A lady was recorded shouting at a police officer, calling him a fascist and asking if he was going to fight with women. She also asked how he was not embarrassed.

Even though it was very cold at -17°C, a lot of people came to the area and shouted ‘Freedom’.

A lot of people were flying flags of Bashkiristan. Bashkirs are a group of people from Turkey who have fought against colonization for a long time.

In the town of Baymak, which has 17,000 people, there were some very unusual events. The government stopped the internet near the court because they were worried that more people would revolt.

The Kremlin is trying to stop any separatist or nationalist feelings among the Bashkirs in the oil-rich region by arresting and imprisoning Alsynov.

These types of protests almost never happen in the country because people can get arrested for gathering without permission from the authorities.

In the last two years, many people have been arrested for speaking out against the war in Ukraine.

The fighting in Bashkortostan happened a few months before Russians will vote for their new president.

U.S Names Houthis As Terrorist Group

0

The U.S has labelled the Houthis as a “specially designated global terrorist.”

The US previously designated the Houthis as a “foreign terrorist organisation” under former President Donald Trump’s administration despite strong objections from human rights and humanitarian aid groups.

In February 2021 under current President Joe Biden, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken delisted the Houthis as both a “foreign terrorist organisation” and as “specially designated global terrorists” as the Biden administration sought to make it easier to get humanitarian aid into Yemen.

A statement from the White House’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, asserted that over the past months, Yemen-based Houthi militants have engaged in unprecedented attacks against United States military forces and international maritime vessels operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

“These attacks fit the textbook definition of terrorism,” the statement read, adding, “They have endangered US. personnel, civilian mariners, and our partners, jeopardized global trade, and threatened freedom of navigation.”

As such, “the designation is an important tool to impede terrorist funding to the Houthis, further restrict their access to financial markets, and hold them accountable for their actions.”

Nonetheless, he added, “If the Houthis cease their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the United States will immediately reevaluate this designation.”

The designation requires U.S financial institutions to freeze Houthi funds and its members will be banned from the country.

Sullivan also noted in the statement that the designation will take effect 30 days from now to allow the US to “ensure robust humanitarian carve outs are in place” so that its action target the Iran-backed militant group and not the people of Yemen.

“The people of Yemen should not pay the price for the actions of the Houthis,” he said.

He said the designation was “sending a clear message” that commercial shipments into Yemeni ports on which the Yemeni people rely for food, medicine and fuel should continue and are not covered by US sanctions.

“The United States will not hesitate to take further actions to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce,” the statement added.

WTO Chief Warns Instability On Red Sea Is A Concern For Global Trade
Earlier, the World Trade Organization (WTO) Chief, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that instability in the crucial waterway, where the Houthis have been targeting Israel-linked vessels, is a major source of concern for global trade.

As a result of the disruption, the WTO would have to revise down its forecast of 3.3 percent growth for the year.

The Red Sea turbulence could have a particularly harsh impact on Italian maritime traders, which rely on the waterway for some 40 percent of their business.

Giampaolo Botta, director general of Genoa’s shipping agents’ association, told Reuters news agency that logistics operators would likely have to “rethink supply cycles” as no solution appears to be on the horizon.

Also, Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping firms, predicted that the disruptions in the strategic Red Sea would continue for “at least a few months”, as Yemen’s Houthi fighters keep waging attacks on passing vessels.

“For or us this will mean longer transit times and probably disruptions of the supply chain”, Maersk’s CEO, Vincent Clerk, stated.

Maersk is among more than a dozen large shipping firms that have re-routed their vessels away from the Red Sea in recent months, fearing attacks.

The Houthis have said they will keep targeting Israel-linked ships passing through the waters, in what they say is solidarity with Gaza, despite the presence of a US-led naval coalition meant to counter them.

Meanwhile, a government source disclosed to a news agency that India is trying to shield its exporters from the impact of the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

Indian Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held talks in Iran on Monday which, he said, had touched on the Red Sea situation.

“The defence ministry has improved surveillance [in the region] and the ministry of external affairs is diplomatically negotiating this very well,” said the source, who requested anonymity.

Cote d’Ivoire Breaks the Silence, Set to End Africa’s Eurobond Drought

0

In a significant move, Cote d’Ivoire is poised to break the nearly two-year silence in sub-Saharan Africa’s Eurobond market, signaling a resurgence of investor confidence in the region.

President Alassane Ouattara announced in Abidjan that the world’s largest cocoa producer would issue a new Eurobond next week, making it the first country in the sub-Saharan African region to do so after a prolonged hiatus.

The President outlined the government’s commitment to the structural transformation of the Ivorian economy, with a focus on accelerating investments in key sectors such as digital technology and transport.

Additionally, he emphasized the exploitation of recent oil and gas discoveries, highlighting the nation’s forward-looking approach to economic development.

While the size of the upcoming Eurobond issue was not disclosed, Cote d’Ivoire is anticipated to be one of the fastest-growing economies in the region in 2024. The positive economic outlook is a testament to the country’s resilience and strategic initiatives despite the global economic challenges.

Following President Ouattara’s announcement, yields on the country’s existing Eurobond due July 2024 experienced a notable decrease, falling by 17 basis points on Monday to trade at 8.36%. This shift reflects a positive market response to the news of Cote d’Ivoire’s impending Eurobond issuance.

Søren Mørch, a portfolio manager at Danske Bank Asset Management, speculated on the potential details of the upcoming Eurobond. He suggested that Cote d’Ivoire would likely issue the bond in dollars with a 10-year tenor, aiming for a sale in the range of 8.50% to 8.75%. The estimated size of the issuance is expected to range between US$1 billion to US$1.25 billion.

As the nation prepares to tap into international capital markets, this development not only marks a crucial milestone for Cote d’Ivoire but also presents an opportunity for investors seeking exposure to the promising economic prospects of the region. The successful issuance of the Eurobond will likely set a positive precedent for other sub-Saharan African countries, opening avenues for economic growth and diversification.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s International Debt Market Freeze
The nations of sub-Saharan Africa find themselves navigating uncharted waters as they grapple with an effective lockout from international debt markets. This predicament stems from the aggressive interest rate hikes initiated by the US Federal Reserve in 2022 to combat rising inflation.

The consequence, a region-wide hiatus in international bond sales, echoing a scenario last witnessed in 2009 during the global financial crisis. The impact of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policies has reverberated across sub-Saharan Africa, creating challenges for nations seeking to access international debt markets for capital.

The aggressive stance taken by the US central bank, driven by concerns over inflation, has created a global financial environment that poses hurdles for emerging economies, particularly those in sub-Saharan Africa.

This freeze in international bond sales marks a significant departure from the trajectory seen in recent years and highlights the vulnerability of the region to external economic forces.

Sub-Saharan African countries have traditionally looked to international debt markets to meet their financing needs and stimulate economic growth. The current impasse, reminiscent of the global financial crisis in 2009, underscores the severity of the challenges faced by these nations.

In 2009, amid the aftermath of the global financial crisis, sub-Saharan African countries endured a full year without a single international bond sale. Now, in 2022, a similar scenario is unfolding as the region contends with a prolonged absence from these crucial financial markets.

The parallel with the past serves as a stark reminder of the resilience required to navigate economic uncertainties and the importance of global economic interconnectedness.

As sub-Saharan African countries grapple with this international debt market freeze, policymakers and financial institutions are compelled to explore alternative strategies to sustain economic momentum. Domestic resource mobilization, innovative financing mechanisms, and strategic partnerships may become integral components of navigating these challenging times.

The road ahead remains uncertain, contingent on both global economic conditions and the ability of sub-Saharan African nations to implement effective economic policies. In the absence of international bond sales, the region faces the task of fortifying its economic foundations and seeking avenues for self-reliance to weather the current financial storm.

Zelenskyy Says Putin Must Be Made To Regret Invasion Of Ukraine

0

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, declared that Russian President, Vladimir Putin must live to regret starting the conflict almost two years ago.

In previous years, Zelenskiy has spoken at Davos by video link and his decision to appear in person this year reflects concern in Kyiv that the west has grown weary of the war.

According to Zelenskyy, the Russian leader had stolen 13 years of peace and would only respond to military defeat.

“One man has stolen at least 13 years of peace, replacing them with pain, pain, pain and crisis that impact the entire world,” he said.

Zelenskyy stated that Putin is trying to normalize what should have ended in the 20th century, citing mass deportations, cities razed to ground, and the feeling that war will never end.

Also, The Ukrainian President said that Putin was spurred on to take military action by warnings to Ukraine not to escalate a conflict that began with the Kremlin’s annexation of the Crimea in 2014.

“This year must be decisive,” he insisted.

“Every ‘do not escalate’ sounded like ‘you will prevail’ to Putin. Because of ‘don’t escalate’, lives were lost,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy pointed to the risk of the conflict spreading further, asking which European nation today can provide a combat-ready army in comparison with Ukraine’s, holding back Russia.

“It is better to put an end to Putin and his war strategy now,” he asserted..

More so, he challenged the idea that peace was possible if the conflict was to be frozen with Russia still occupying large chunks of eastern Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said that he doubted that “freezing the war in Ukraine” would actually end the conflict, adding that after 2014, there were attempts to freeze the war in Donbas, but that did not sate Russia’s appetite.

“Putin is a predator who is not satisfied by frozen products,” he said.

“We have to defend ourselves. We can beat him on the ground, in the air and at sea – and we have proved it,” he added.

In addition, Zelenskyy stressed the need to tighten economic sanctions on Russia to hobble its arms industry.

He said that Putin must be made to regret the invasion of Ukraine.

“The more money Putin and his allies lose, the more he will regret this war…We need to finally dispell the illusion that global unity is weaker than one man’s hatred.”

“Putin must regret it [the war]. We need him to lose. Global unity is stronger than one man’s hatred.”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy
How long will the Russian people allow Putin to continue this war?

When asked “how long will the Russian people allow Putin to continue this war?,” Zelenskyy replied that it depends on “how long the Russian people are prepared to be deaf, to not hear or see anything, and pretend everything is all right.”

“That’s a question for the people of the Russian Federation, whether they are capable of changing themselves, not for me,” he said, adding, “I don’t believe Putin is capable of changing, because only humans can do that.”

Zelenskyy Urges Investment To Support Ukrainian Economy
Moreover, The Ukrainian President, urged international partners to strengthen the Ukrainian economy with much-needed investment.

“Only our people and your investments can build a strong economy … We need normal investments from predictable, transparent companies,” Zelenskyy said.

He added, “Strengthen our economy; we will strengthen your security.”

Zelenskyy also told the people present that Ukraine needs their help for the reconstruction effort. “Each of you can be even more succesful with Ukraine,” he noted.

He added that he has held discussions with the President of Switzerland about holding a global peace summit.

“Peace must win, this must be the answer,” he averred.

If Edgar Lungu says he wants to be on the ballot in 2026 I will still fight him – KBF

Save your reputation, that’s my advice to ECL – KBF

By Kholiwe Miti(The Mast)

IF former president Edgar Lungu says he wants to be on the ballot in 2026 I will still fight him, says Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) president Kelvin Fube Bwalya.

He advises Lungu not to be on the ballot in the next elections.

Briefing the media at the party secretariat on Friday, Bwalya said Lungu has had his time by being elected twice and “has already done his second term”.

“The former president did not qualify and I stood on principle and I said for me, I consider that a third term. I have not changed that position. So if you are asking me to advise Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL) today that would be my advice. He gave us seven years of leadership we thank him but that’s it. We are not short of leaders in this country and we cannot be going backwards. That time has passed. Every time that passes, every minute that passes, the season changes,” he said. “So for me I don’t believe that former president must come back into active politics. The only reason I agreed with this position was that he said he was returning to active politics because he wanted to protect and defend democracy. That I will do, I will hold his hand and we will walk the corridors of justice to ensure that we protect that, no more no less. But if he says he wants himself on the ballot I will still fight him.”

Bwalya said it is a “no go area” for Lungu to run for president.

“We have enough leaders in this country and therefore that to me is a no-go area. And my position has not changed. He has been elected twice, he has been on the ballot twice. He has won two elections, twice, and I maintain that position. Those who changed their positions that’s their problem,” said Bwalya. “I have never changed and as you know I don’t know who but there are some citizens who have taken him back to court on that issue. You remember the Constitutional Court had said he is eligible. Citizens have now gone back to court saying court to review that decision and to vacate and set aside that decision so that he doesn’t run. So for me why go through the machinations, why not save your reputation? That’s my advice to ECL.”

ZNS MEALIE MEAL IS IN TWO BRANDS, FOR LOCAL CONSUMPTION AND FOR EXPORT

ZNS MEALIE MEAL IS IN TWO BRANDS, FOR LOCAL CONSUMPTION AND FOR EXPORT

The confusion in Chililabombwe is purely based on misinformation and excitement from people who think they have scored exposing ZNS when in reality they have exposed themselves for not being aware of the National current affairs and how things are going. What is more regrettable is that some people that are even aware of what Cabinet approved agitated the situation by expressing ignorance on the matter.

ZNS has milling plants doted around the country for the production of local mealie meal for consumption and the bags are green and you can access this mealie meal in any chain store or supermarkets around the country such as Shoprite, Choppies, Pick n Pay and many more. If there is any area that needs mealie meal ZNS is supplying evenly everywhere. Unlike the rest of the country where there is no pressure, in the 4 Copperbelt Districts namely Mufulira, Chililabombwe, Ndola and Masaiti the situation is different due to smuggling no matter how much mealie meal is supplied its going mainly for smuggling.

Cabinet approved that ZNS imports mealie meal South Africa via different private companies and that mealie meal is then repackaged for export to Congo DRC to ensure that the pressure on the local brand is less. Even the bags are labelled (For Export) that mealie meal is not meant for local consumption.

Ba Chililabombwe you must be sensitized about these differences because you expose yourselves, ZNS are a military wing that can not do anything to harm you or against you its your government trying very hard to respond to the situation. The videos circulating on social media alluding that Congolese are repackaging ZNS mealie meal are false. That operation is by ZNS (your government) and there is nothing illegal about that and that mealie meal is not for you Zambians but for Congolese.

Your mealie meal is there in chain stores and supermarkets the problem with the 4 towns on Copperbelt is that they are buying too much in bulk not because they have VIP appetite that needs alot of mealie meal but they are smuggling to the DRC Congo hence the shortages. CIC is covering Task Force Team charged to face smuggling its a sad story the drama around. So how do you want to eat your cake so fast and have it at the same time?. The mealie meal shortage in Chililabombwe and many towns is because of smuggling. We are covering alot of operations even today 02 in Ndola we where covering ab operation where alot of mealie meal is being smuggled to the DRC how then does the mealie meal become available in this situation?.
