Edgar Lungu Should Start From Ward Level –PF MP Chabinga

0

Patriotic Front (PF) Mafinga Member of Parliament, Robert Chabinga, has offered counsel to former President Edgar Lungu regarding his aspirations within the PF. He emphasized that adhering to the party’s constitution is of utmost importance when aspiring for leadership positions, recommending that Mr. Lungu start from the grassroots level within the party’s Ward structures.

Chabinga pointed out that the PF constitution stipulates that individuals who have previously resigned from the party structure must adhere to a three-year waiting period and initiate their political journey from the Ward level. He cited the example of Matero Member of Parliament, Miles Sampa, who had previously left the PF and had to respect the waiting period before seeking office within the party again.

Chabinga expressed his views during a press briefing held in Lusaka. He asserted that former President Lungu should abide by the party’s rules, ascend through the Ward level, and progress to the national level within the party.

Yesterday, former President Lungu made an official announcement regarding his return to active politics, sparking discussions and debates within the PF.

Furthermore, Robert Chabinga categorically rejected claims that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) funded the recent PF Conference during which Miles Sampa was elected as the party’s President. He denounced assertions made by certain PF members that the UPND and State House played a role in Sampa’s rise to power as false.

In addition to offering guidance on PF leadership and dispelling funding allegations, Robert Chabinga urged the police to take swift action against individuals or groups that hold political events under the banner of the Patriotic Front without the endorsement of President Miles Sampa.

Chabinga also emphasized the need for the government to expedite the fight against corruption. He expressed concerns that the ongoing fight against corruption had been protracted, with limited progress in the prosecution of individuals involved in corrupt practices.

The dynamics and developments within the Patriotic Front continue to evolve and elicit discussions among political figures, party members, and the general public. The future trajectory of the PF and the political aspirations of its prominent members will undoubtedly remain subjects of interest and scrutiny in the coming months.

Lungu group vows vigorous fight to win back party

THE Edgar Lungu grouping of PF has promised a vigorous fight to bring legality and normality in the party.

A leadership crisis has recently split the former ruling party sparking a firece battle for its control with Miles Sampa on one end, and former president Edgar Lungu on the other.

On Saturday, Lungu announced his return to active politics saying he had come back as PF president to save the party from being destroyed.

As the drama unfolds, the Sampa-led group seems to have an edge over their opponents with a court order allowing them room to be in charge, at leadership until an inter-party hearing slated for November 21.

With office bearers also changed in their favour by the Registrar of Societies, the Sampa group is calling the shots.

But in a statement yesterday, Emmanuel Mwamba, the information and publicity chairperson said their position on Sampa whom he said remained expelled had not changed.

“Further, any changes being implemented at the Registrar of Societies or Parliament are illegal and will be vigorously fought to forestall legality and normality,” Mwamba stated.

Mwamba said the PF and its leadership were a revolutionary product and creation of the people and the current attempts to “steal the Party will be vigorously resisted”.

“We also noted a press conference held by a suspended official and Member of Parliament Robert Chawinga. Mr. Chawings, was purporting to be leader of the Opposition in Parliament and we have largely decided to ignore his remarks and his comments for now,” Mwamba stated.

Mwamba accsused the government of supporting Sampa in his attempt to “steal” the PF.

“We urge the UPND Government to desist from nestling and facilitating lawlessness currently being perpetrated by Mr. Miles Sampa who it accepted , that he held an illegal Conference and is currently engaged in conducting a coup d’état against the Patriotic Front Party, relying heavily on President Hakainde Hichilema to abuse state power to help him achieve this,” he said.

And commenting on the press briefing that was called off yesterday, Mwamba said the notice published on various media was false.

Mwamba warned that during the battle for the PF, there would heightened misinformation.

He urged the media to verify any information with “our Secretary General Hon. Raphael Nakacinda and our media team in; Deputy Chairperson of Information and Publicity Ms. Nakiwe Simpungwe and Media Director, Mr. Edwin Lifwekelo since I am out of the country”.

New Heritage Party’s Response to Former President ECL’s Call to Opposition Political Parties

New Heritage Party’s Response to Former President ECL’s Call to Opposition Political Parties.

29th October 2023

Former President Lungu, in making his comeback statement to politics, also made a very clear clarion call to Opposition Political Parties to unite in order to help the nation to tackle the growing mis-rule of the UPND Government and to the rebuilding of democracy in the nation.

It is very clear that those in power today, in their usual, immoral, brazen and divisive manner, are every day assaulting our democratic space, in one way or the other. They are shrinking the democracy in our nation by attacking the opposition through the destabilization of their Parties by incarceration of their leaders and or members, preventing political parties from holding public rallies and hence trampling on our rights to freedom of association and assembly. The press is being slowly but surely gagged and suffocated; just recently a journalist lost his job for merely taking a picture of people lining up for mealie meal , the IBA tried to control the content of a radio interview of Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa and threatened the journalist and owners of the radio station- the youth have not been spared as the youth leader of the Socialist Party has been arrested and slapped with very serious charges and even the Clergy has not been spared.

On 28th October 2022, we in the NHP issued a timely warning to the nation to the effect that Zambia was (and has continued to) sleep walking into a Police State. On 8th February 2023, we continued to warn the nation through our statement that “Dictatorship is slowly and quietly being entrenched in Zambia by UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema. on 18 June 2023, we continued to raise alarm in our statement on “Arbitrary Arrests”.

We have now been vindicated as other voices have now joined with ours as they too raise this alarm; these include the twelve (12) Civil Society Organizations that issued a Press Statement on 26th October 2023, headed “Joint CSO Press Statement on the Shrinking Space for Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Assembly in Zambia”, an observation by Emeritus Bishop Telesphore Mpundu with regard to the shrinking democratic space and now, the former President also adding his voice.

It is this spectrum of issues that the New Heritage Party is concerned with and where we are in agreement with former President Lungu. These issues are what requires a united front of all of us – Political Parties, Civil Society Organisations, the Church and indeed every Zambian. We must, of necessity, all stand up and be counted.

What is at the core of that clarion call by the former President, is the recognition that unless the Opposition in this country is united, we may betray the people of Zambia in their quest to free themselves of this UPND misrule.

In view of the foregoing, the New Heritage Party accepts the invitation to work with the former President, together with all those political parties and ordinary Zambians that will give themselves to this national imperative in order to address the issues that we are faced with, for the sake of the nation’s survival and for the sake of our hard worn independence.

We thus urge the Civil Society, the Church and indeed every Zambian, to join us in this noble cause of defending this nation against the machinations of the ruling Party to destroy democracy whilst they gallivant all over the world for their own entertainment amidst the high cost of living, rampant corruption, divisiveness, abrogation and a disregard for the rule of law, high fuel prices, a lack of medicines in our health facilities and high mealie meal prices.

“A MESS! THE PF MPs JUST HAVE TO EAT THE HUMBLE PIE

The PF MPs are between a hardrock and a hard surface, the fate of PF MPs in Parliament in light of the Court Order affirming Miles Sampa as new PF President at the just ended “illegal PF convention”.

For now, the PF MPs have no option but to eat the humble pie and SUBMIT to Miles Sampa as new PF President and toll his line both in Parliament and outside Parliament. Whichever PF MP who does not agree with the current political status in the former ruling party PF only have two options, that is is either to resign their parliamentary seat/s and leave Parliament or simply submit to Miles Sampa and his PF faction until such a time when the higher court over rules him as PF President or better still wait for 2026 when President HH dissolves Parliament in readiness for the 2026 general elections. I say so because it is political reality that the PF will stay locked up in the courts of law for the longest time fighting legal battles between PF vs. PF.

But I can almost bet that none of the 54 PF MPs are willing to resign their parliamentary seats today and forfeit their graduities as a way of protest against the election of Miles Sampa as new PF president for most of them have running car loans, building loans, business investments loans and salary advances tied to their salaries. Moreso that most of the MPs are not coming back in the next Parliament so they can not risk resigning their precious parliamentary seats.

The saddest part is that if by-elections were held today assuming that PF MPs have resigned their seats, PF would technically lose the affected Parliamentary seats to ruling UPND as PF1 and PF2 will be locked up in court fighting each other as to which is the authentic PF, is it PF1 or PF2.IT’S A MESS! SADC WILL BEAR THE CONSEQUENCES IF CONGO-DR IMPLODES- Fred M’membe

SADC WILL BEAR THE CONSEQUENCES IF CONGO-DR IMPLODES

To have peaceful, free, and fair December elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), certain conditions have to prevail in the country and the hearts of the Congolese people.

There ought to be a conducive atmosphere. The concerns of all key players must be adequately addressed.

We therefore call upon SADC to take a keen interest in the unfortunate occurrences in DRC ahead of the December parliamentary and presidential elections and help the key players resolve their differences and disagreements.

The judicial criminality and electoral fraud, which is currently brewing in the DRC, shouldn’t be allowed to continue. It’s the responsibility of SADC through the organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (Troika), which is presently chaired by Mr Hakainde Hichilema, to help the Congolese have peaceful, free, and fair elections.

The Troika’s mandate is to steer member states and provide them with guidance regarding matters that threaten peace, security, and stability in the region. And the current situation obtaining in the DRC qualifies for immediate SADC action or intervention before it’s too late.

As current chairperson of the organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Mr Hichilema must draw a commitment from Mr Felix Tshisekedi for free and fair elections in the DRC. The current attempts by Mr Tshisekedi to use the court system to stay in power at all costs must be condemned and halted forthwith.

We are aware that Mr Tshisekedi is trying to use the courts to remove strong opponents he fears, such as Mr Moise Chapwe Katumbi, from the December elections ballot paper.

This brazen attempt was exposed in recent events where Mr Katumbi’s candidature was challenged in the Constitutional Court. Equally, Mr Tshisekedi’s candidature was challenged in the same court, and the petitioners in both matters lodged their petitions on the same day, October 23, 2023. This was after the deadline for filing petitions had lapsed.

However, in Mr Tshisekedi’s matter, the DRC Constitutional Court decided not hear the matter on account of the petition being filed out of time. But surprisingly, the same court ruled it would go ahead and hear Mr Katumbi’s matter. This is in the face of both petitions being filed on the same day and past the deadline.

How can one matter be admissible and the other be inadmissible in the same court? What type of electoral fraud is this? What type of judicial criminality is this? Why is Mr Tshisekedi scared of the will of the people? And why is Mr Hichilema, who is the incumbent chairperson of the SADC organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, conveniently silent? Is it because he is now friends with Mr Tshisekedi?

We would caution Mr Hichilema to look into these matters neutrally because, as it stands now, the DRC is on the verge of a major electoral crisis, which might plunge the country into chaos. Mr Hichilema must be concerned with Mr Tshisekedi’s irresponsible attempts to eliminate a strong candidate – Mr Katumbi – because once the DRC implodes, it is SADC, and Zambia in particular, that will bear the consequences of the humanitarian crisis that will unfold.

Therefore, it is in the best interest of SADC, and Mr Hichilema in particular, to proactively address the electoral process ahead of the December parliamentary and presidential elections before the situation degenerates into chaos.

Allowing the current judicial criminality and electoral fraud in the DRC to continue without any intervention from SADC is postponing trouble for the region.

COME BACK TO PATRIOTIC FRONT CHILUBANAMA TELLS SUPPORTERS OF PF

THE RETURN OF EMMANUEL CHILUBANAMA A BEACON OF HOPE FOR THE PATRIOTIC FRONT’S FUTURE

29th October 2023.

The 2026 winds of change are blowing once more in Zambian politics, as the Patriotic Front (PF) party welcomes back one of its most esteemed members. Emmanuel Chilubanama, the former Permanent Secretary at State House announced his re-entry into the party, bringing with him a wealth of experience and political insight.

Chilubanama’s history with the PF dates back to its early years when it was founded by the late Michael Sata. Over the years, his relationship with the party has been tumultuous, marked by periods of allegiance, tension, and hiatus. His return, therefore, marks a significant milestone for the PF, as it seeks to redefine and restructure itself following the setback it faced in the 2021 elections.

As the former Permanent Secretary at the State House, Chilubanama has invaluable knowledge of governmental operations and policy intricacies. His expertise and perspective could prove pivotal in enhancing the PF’s political strategies, enabling the party to regroup and reconstruct effectively, as it aims to regain its political influence and impact within the nation.

Chilubanama’s decision to rejoin the PF couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, as the party is currently undergoing an evaluation of its strategies, public image, and leadership. Post the 2021 electoral defeat, there has been an introspective analysis within the party, seeking to understand the factors contributing to their loss and plan an effective way forward. Chilubanama’s return significantly contributes to this introspective process, offering insights into the party’s strengths and weaknesses, and charting a path to rebuilding the party’s political identity.

Indeed, Chilubanama’s return gives hope for the future, offering a glimmer of possibility in what has been a tumultuous period for Zambia’s politics. His decision to rejoin the PF should be a rallying cry for all political actors to come together in the spirit of unity, for the betterment of the nation. As we move forward, we hope for the return of more patriots like Chilubanama, who have the courage and conviction to put the interests of the nation above themselves, truly embodying what it means to be a patriotic Zambian.

UPND SHRINKING ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRATIC SPACE…..in the manner they are persecuting their political opponents- ZUPED President Ronnie Jere

UPND SHRINKING ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRATIC SPACE

…..in the manner they are persecuting their political opponents

Lusaka… Sunday October 29, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The Zambians for Unity Peace and Democracy (ZUPED) has charged that the UPND government is shrinking the democratic space in the country by the way they are persecuting their political opponents.

ZUPED President Ronnie Jere says this is not good for the country’s democracy as well as the rule of law.

Mr Jere has called on Church mother bodies, Civil Society Organizations and all opposition political parties to rise up and condemn this undemocratic practice by the UPND government.

He suspects that the UPND wants to make a one party state which he says is dangerous to democracy.

“The incarceration of opposition PeP leader Sean Tembo makes sad reading. We have noted the escalation of arresting opposition political leaders by the UPND government and this is bad for democracy and rule of law. We all know how to deal with people that are perceived to be law breakers in the case of Sean Tembo we saw the police going to his house, break into his house when the case that he is purported to have committed is something that needed to be issued a call out so that he avails himself at the police station and exculpate himself,” he said.

“Unfortunately there was brutality on the part of the police on Sean Tembo. We call upon President Hakainde Hichilema to desist from persecuting his political opponents because this is not good.”

He said Zambia has had a good reputation up to now as a democratic county but the UPND government wants to reverse all these gains.

“It took first Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda to bring multi-partism so that people can freely express themselves and assemble. We have observed how they chased Harry Kalaba from Democratic Party using state machinery and now they want to split the PF using the same state machinery. Its unfortunate that the police are being abused in this manner, they have barricaded the PF secretariat and now are firing gunshots to disperse innocent people. This is sad and if nothing is done about it there will be anarchy in the country. People should rise up and condemn this we have a country to protect,” he added.

“This country is not for the ruling party, how special is Miles Sampa to be given such police protection?”

Mr Jere said Zambia is known as a peaceful country and respects the democracy.

ECL AND HIS ALEBWELELAPO TEAM MUST QUICKLY REALIZE THAT HH IS NOT THEIR ENEMY BUT THEIR PROTECTOR

Authored By Mupishi Jones

Former PF leaders seem to have developed a pathological hate against President Hakainde Hichilema. In their view, whatever misfortunes they’re going through, they think it is President Hakainde Hichilema who is behind that. That is where they are missing it.As a matter of fact, President Hakainde Hichilema is the one protecting them.

The problem with the former PF leaders is that they think the way they used to sit and start planning on how to fix individuals when they were running government, that’s how President Hakainde Hichilema does. The plain truth is that President Hakainde Hichilema has never called anyone nor sat down with any state agent to start discussing on how to fix individuals…never at all! Those with an opportunity to talk to HH can attest to this fact!
Sometimes he gets shocked when he’s accused of trying to fix ECL and his alebwelelapo team! The man as an individual is completely innocent! Yes they could be other UPND members including state agents who still have bones to chew with these former PF leaders but count HH out! The day President Hakainde Hichilema will give up on ECL and his alebwelelapo team, that will be the day a catastrophe will be tickled against this alebwelelapo bunch.
ECL and his alebwelelapo crew must realize that when they were running this government, they injured a lot of people who are still yearning for revenge. They permanently disrupted alot of families’s stability.

Most of those injured families will never recover from the pain inflicted on them by these former PF leaders.Think of the relatives and friends of those who were murdered during the ECL regime,if they were to find a chance,no matter how little that chance can be to hit at ECL, do you think they would even notify President Hakainde Hichilema? What about those civil and defence government officers who were being constantly victimized by the PF regime, finding a chance,do you think they can spare ECL and his alebwelelapo team?

There are hundreds of UPND cadres who were permanently disabled at the hands of the PF when it was in power, these cadres still carry that hate even today, they’re still licking the wounds of PF’s brutality,if they find corruption or any other criminal act evidence or witness against ECL and his alebwelelapo team do you think they can even notify President Hakainde Hichilema? Not at all they would rather take it straight to state agents harboring similar revenge motives to pull a fast one on them!

ECL and his alebwelelapo team are aware that government machinery is a huge and complicated organism. It has a lot of human beings with different personal feelings.
Therefore, the more they get obsessed with President Hakainde Hichilema the more they will continue miscalculating their political strategies. That is how they failed even to notice the moves PF President Miles Sampa was pulling against them! PF President Sampa pulled a carpet off their feet without them noticing it because their focus was on a totally wrong target….HH!
Even after this, they still believe President Hakainde Hichilema was involved in President Sampa’s take-over of PF!

The driving force behind the ECL and his alebwelelapo team is arrogance. They still carry the same arrogance they were exhibiting when they were in government.

ECL still thinks he can do whatever he wants whether within the law or outside the law without consequences. He thinks he can still continue being a constitutional deliquency without being reprimanded.

For instance,he thinks he can just wake up from his own retirement and take over the presidency of PF from Miles Sampa without a fight, isn’t that arrogance?

ECL and his alebwelelapo team think they can simultaneously mount fights against so many forces and expect to win? Sometimes the arrogance of these former PF leaders is astounding.

Analysis: Zambia abstains during UNGA resolution on Israel-Palestine vote

…should there cause for concern in International Relations?

Amb. Anthony Mukwita

29.10.23

It’s been three weeks, hours, and some days since the war between Israel and Palestine began leaving about 8000 Palestinians d£ad thousands injured and about 1,400 Israeli´s dead and several injured too but the end to the conflict remains elusive.

If you are in serene Zambia where the only complaints would be concerns on mealie meal prices of and fuel, this conflict fadeth into ether.

You might even wonder, why should it even warrant a discussion, until you crunch the numbers and realise that up to 10 children are dying daily in Gaza as the battle rages high. They could be your son, daughter or mine just think about it.

So, when two days ago the United Nations General Assembly so called UNGA met to discuss a Jordanian resolution for peace, as an international relations analyst, I glowed with hope—hope that the 193-member strong UNGA would end this senseless wanton loss of lives to a halt, even temporarily but I was dreaming yet again.

HOW DID THE UNGA VOTE AND MEAN?

When the UNGA met amidst lots of high hopes after two failed draft resolutions before the mighty UNSC or United Nations Security Council from Brazil and Russia, it was clear that the stage was set to send a crystal clear message to the world that, either they detested or supported the continued bombardment of militarily strong Israel onto beleaguered Palestine, the world watched and so did I because Zambia a key member of the UN.

When the jury returned with the verdict, Zambia our country, chose to ´abstain´ and not support or reject the resolution for a ceasefire or opening a humanitarian corridor into Gaza to help uplift the lives of the about 2.2 million Palestinians trapped in the world’s largest open-air prison, a colony of Israel.

When Zambia abstained, I got a myriad of queries ´in-box´ asking, ´sir what does it mean that Zambia has abstained? ´

I tried at first to use some wise international relations jargon to explain it but then I realised that at the end of the day, people just need a basic fools guide on what the issue is, and the issue is if it clucks like a duck, it’s a duck but then in diplomacy like in life, there are no quick fixes or silver bullets.

The definition I gave thereof to those that follow my page is that ´Zambia abstaining´ could mean one of two things: either Zambia cares so much about the cease fire, cessation of hostilities so much but they don’t want to hurt ´friends ‘that might not care about the matter.

The other is ´Zambia doesn’t care about the ceasefire or corridor for humanitarian aid or truce ‘but they can’t say so in public because that might hurt their other friends in diplomacy. ´

In short, Zambia is caught between a hard place and a hard place like 45 other countries while 120 countries of the UN voted for a ´humanitarian truce´ and 14 said nyet, its not easy in diplomacy but many would like to play safe than sorry.

WHAT IS THE POINT THEN OF VOTING?

The point, however, is if as a country you feel strongly about your abstinence, you can issue a note to explain for the benefit of your ´friends´ and especially your citizens why you either abstained, voted yes or no, Zambia is yet to explain that but then not many Zambians seem to care about the war in the middle east when the elephant in the room back in this neck of the wood is just food.

Some of you diplomacy followers will recall what former US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld once said regarding issues close to ´abstaining´ here: “because as we know there are ´known knowns´ and there ´er things we know we know. We also know there are ´known unknowns. ‘that is to say, ´there are things we know we don’t know.”
Crazy right? Rumsfeld added, ´there are also unknown unknowns ‘the ones we don’t know we don’t know. ´

I lose count folks but in short, ´we won’t know why Zambia abstained until we know, and we also won’t know whether Zambia abstaining was good or bad´ until we know.

Either way, there are things I personally know as an international relations pundit, ´the loss of 8000 Palestinian lives, 1,400 Israelis and 10 Palestinian children dying daily in a known ´no do´. Let’s give peace a chance because the mornings in three weeks shine not a ray of hope. Every night brings death and destruction in the Colony of Gaza.

I can bet my last bottom kwacha that dozen other beleaguered Palestinians that are now looting shops for crumbs of bread and wheat will be dead tomorrow as the food, energy, and electricity suspensions clock on.

If you are in Zambia, you think the conflict between Israel and Egypt is so far away until you bring down to the short distance between Zambia and Egypt, as we live in an ever-shrinking world.

There´s no need to continue witnessing massive loss of lives on both sides before the fat lady finally sings.

I always say I have no horse in this race, but 120 votes are beginning to convince me that the world is tired of the war, albeit the UNGA resolution is not binding compared to a 15-member strong UNSC resolution, peace must prevail.

Sometimes you must draw a line in the sand and stand a post or fall for anything.

Govt Facilitates Internship Opportunities for 600 Youths in the US

0

In a significant initiative to empower and offer invaluable exposure to the youth of Zambia, the Government has successfully secured internship opportunities for 600 Zambian youths in the United States of America. The Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, announced this exciting development, revealing the key details of this remarkable opportunity.

Internship Opportunities and Fields of Engagement

Minister Elvis Nkandu unveiled that the selected Zambian youths, primarily specializing in the fields of psycho-social counseling and social work, will embark on a transformative journey to the United States in the coming year. These internships will encompass a substantial six-month work agreement in the USA, fostering invaluable learning experiences and skill development.

Financial Support

The Zambian youths are not only set to gain immeasurable professional experience, but they will also be duly compensated for their efforts during their internship period. Minister Nkandu disclosed that these interns will receive a competitive compensation of 40 US dollars per hour for a standard eight-hour daily work shift throughout their stay in the United States. This commendable financial support serves as a testament to the Government’s commitment to nurturing the country’s youth and providing them with valuable opportunities.

Exposure and Knowledge Exchange

Moreover, the internship program aims to provide Zambian youths with a holistic global experience by exposing them to new horizons, diverse perspectives, and unmatched professional connections. This initiative stands as a remarkable platform for the exchange of ideas and networking with American counterparts, enabling the youth to broaden their horizons.

Minister Nkandu made this remarkable announcement during the official handover of technology equipment to the Mufumbwe Youth Resource Centre. The equipment donation was made possible through the generous collaboration of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the joint program focusing on youth empowerment and employment in Zambia.

The Government’s proactive measures in facilitating internship opportunities and providing essential resources to empower the youth showcase its dedication to nurturing the country’s future leaders. These opportunities not only enable young Zambians to acquire valuable skills but also foster international collaboration and understanding, paving the way for a brighter and more empowered future.

This initiative has received widespread praise and recognition as a critical step towards empowering the youth and harnessing their potential to shape Zambia’s future. It demonstrates the Government’s commitment to youth development, knowledge exchange, and global exposure.

Kenya to Abolish Visa Requirements for All African Visitors by Year-end, Announces President Ruto

0

In a significant development, President William Ruto of Kenya announced that the country will eliminate visa requirements for all African visitors by the end of this year. He made this groundbreaking announcement during an international conference, emphasizing the need for Africa to move away from visa restrictions that hinder the continent’s progress.

Visa-free travel within Africa has long been a goal of the African Union (AU), with the aim of fostering unity and encouraging intra-African travel. While certain regional and bilateral agreements have eased travel between specific countries, the overall progress towards completely unrestricted travel within the continent has been sluggish.

As of 2022, only three African nations, namely Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin, allow entry to all African citizens without requiring a visa, according to a report supported by the AU. However, Africa’s Visa Openness Index, which assesses the extent of openness of each African country to visitors from other African nations, indicates that most countries are gradually simplifying entry processes and reducing restrictions on travelers from other nations.

Kenya, for instance, was ranked 31st out of 54 African states on the Visa Openness Index in 2022. President Ruto asserted during his address in Congo-Brazzaville that visa restrictions hindered business activities and affected economic growth.

The president stated, “When people cannot travel, businesspeople cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel, we all become net losers. As Kenya, by the end of this year, no African will be required to have a visa to come to Kenya.”

He highlighted the importance of allowing the youth of Africa to freely explore the continent and not be confined by borders, whether in Europe or within Africa. The president’s announcement was met with enthusiastic cheers from the conference attendees.

The African Union introduced the African passport in 2016, with the vision of enabling all African citizens to travel across the continent without the need for visas. However, the widespread implementation of this initiative has been delayed due to concerns related to security, smuggling, and potential impacts on local employment markets.

While eliminating all visa restrictions remains a formidable challenge, the Visa Openness Index report recommends several alternative measures, including reducing visa fees, standardizing visa-on-arrival for African visitors, and implementing a secure e-visa system. These steps aim to simplify and encourage intra-African travel and economic integration.

As Kenya takes a bold step towards ending visa requirements for African visitors, the move is expected to support the AU’s vision of a united and interconnected African continent.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence pulls out from 2024 presidential race

0

Former US Vice President Mike Pence has opted to step back from the 2024 presidential race, citing that the timing is not favorable.

He delivered this announcement during a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on a Saturday afternoon.

“We always knew this would be an uphill battle, but I have no regrets”, he wrote in a statement.

In a race currently dominated by former President Donald Trump, Mr. Pence has become the first prominent Republican candidate to halt his campaign. Pence’s presidential bid had been lagging behind Trump in the polls.

Furthermore, Mr. Pence’s campaign has accrued substantial debt, with him ending September in the red, owing $621,000 (£512,038) and holding only $1.2 million (£989,446) in his campaign funds, which is notably less than his Republican competitors.

“I am leaving this campaign, but I will never leave the fight for conservative values,” he wrote in a statement addressed to his supporters.

The 64-year-old faced a significant loss of support from Republican voters when he openly disagreed with Mr. Trump regarding the events of the 6th of January Capitol riot in 2021. Additionally, his role in presiding over the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Congress further eroded his standing with many in the Republican base.

Mr. Trump criticized Mr. Pence for what he perceived as a lack of “courage” when Pence declined to challenge the Democratic leader’s election win. During the 2021 storming of Congress, some rioters even chanted “hang Mike Pence,” and since that fateful day, many staunch Trump supporters have viewed him as a betrayer.

The former Vice President said in March that Mr Trump’s encouragement of the rioters had “endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day”.

In his resignation, Mr Pence did not endorse any other Republican candidates for the presidential election.

But he called on Americans to choose a leader that “will ‘appeal to the better angels of our nature’ and not only lead us to victory but also lead our nation with civility and back to those time-honoured principles that have always made America strong, prosperous and free.”

Why DR Congo wants East African troops to leave

0

After just 11 months in action, the East African force set up to curb militia violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been ordered to leave the country.

The Congolese government said it would not extend the East Africa Community (EAC) Regional Force’s mandate after months of Kinshasa complaining about the group’s ineffectiveness.

The decision not to extend the troops’ stay comes as violence between the M23 rebel group and pro-government militias erupts in DR Congo’s troubled eastern region once more.

What was the regional troop’s mandate?

The East African Community (EAC) – a union of seven countries – sent its troops to DR Congo last year after a resurgence in fighting by the M23. The force was agreed shortly after DR Congo had joined the regional club.

Formed more than 10 years ago, the M23 has taken over large swathes of territory in the east, arguing that it does so to defend the interest of ethnic Tutsis against Hutu militias it says are backed by the government.

Burundi was the first of four countries to send its troops to DR Congo in August last year, followed by Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda, with Kenya in overall command.

The EAC’s Regional Force insists its mandate is to oversee the withdrawal of armed groups from captured areas.

However, the Congolese government and local communities want the force to engage in direct combat with groups like the M23.

The force was established to work alongside United Nations troops who were already in the country. The UN peacekeeping force, known as Monusco, has become increasingly unpopular for its failure to end the conflict during its 25-year deployment. President Félix Tshisekedi said he wanted Monusco to withdraw from the country in December.

In a recent statement, the EAC said its forces were dedicated to working closely with the government to enable the safe return of internally displaced people to their homes and enhance the overall protection of civilians.

Its mandate has been extended twice since the mission began.

Why does DR Congo want East African troops to leave?

The EAC’s soldiers have received repeated criticism from the Congolese government and civil society groups throughout their deployment.

President Tshisekedi has become one of the force’s main detractors. He has complained about the mission’s “lack of effectiveness”, issuing ultimatums for them to act more aggressively against the M23 or leave the country.

The failure to end the conflict has led to demonstrations against both the EAC force and Monusco. One such protest in September turned deadly, with more than 40 people losing their lives.

According to local media, Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya said: “The message is clear: the EAC regional force must leave the Democratic Republic of Congo by 8 December, as agreed, because it has not been able to resolve the problem, particularly that of the M23.”

What has the EAC force achieved?

Since entering DR Congo last year, the EAC force said it had overseen the withdrawal of armed forces from several areas like Karuba, Mushaki, Kiloriwe and Kitchange.

However, achieving complete stability has proven to be challenging. The force has faced logistical and operational difficulties.

On Tuesday, a mortar attack launched by rebels killed a Kenyan soldier attached to the force. He was the first Kenyan member of the force to be killed.

Earlier this month the EAC said its forces had faced hostilities because of propaganda perpetuated by armed groups.

Why has fighting resumed?

Dozens of armed groups have long plagued DR Congo’s mineral-rich eastern region.

After a precarious six-month truce, fighting resumed between M23 rebels and pro-government forces, known as Wazalendo, this month.

The government in Kinshasa accused the M23 of failing to disarm and uphold the ceasefire. The M23 in turn blamed pro-government forces for the resumption of the violence.

DR Congo’s army said it was still respecting the truce, but witnesses contest this, saying soldiers and pro-government loyalists have been fighting together against the M23.

Civilians have been caught up in the renewed violence – just last week at least 60 were killed in attacks on North Kivu’s Rutshuru territory, a local official said.

Parents of Liverpool star, Luis Díaz Kidnapped

Parents of Liverpool and Colombia winger, Luis Díaz, were kidnapped on Saturday in Barrancas, La Guajira, Colombia.

Soon after the incident, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that the mother has been rescued from kidnappers but the search for his father continues.

Petro posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday that Diaz’s mother was rescued in Barrancas in the northern part of the country.

“We continue in the search for the father,” added Petro.

Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office said they had been working intensely on the case.

“From the moment the Attorney General’s Office learned of the kidnapping of the parents of the Colombian player Luis Díaz, in the Barrancas sector of La Guajira, a specialised team of prosecutors, police and military personnel have been working to find “the location of these people, clarify the facts and find those responsible”, the office said on X.

Local media reports said Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were at a service station in La Guajira area when armed men on motorbikes took them.

The director of the police, General William Salamanca, said he deployed intelligence agents and other police departments in the area to deal with the case.

The police are “already involved, right now, in carrying out checkpoints, identifying people on motorbikes, private public service vehicles for the recovery of the two kidnapped people, the father and mother of the footballer Luis Diaz”, Salamanca told Colombian media earlier on Saturday.

La Guajira Governor Diala Wilches condemned the kidnapping and appealed for their return.

“To the kidnappers, we demand that they return them immediately, safe and sound,” she said.

Liverpool expressed concern and said it was supporting Diaz.

“It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.”

The 26-year-old Liverpool and Colombia winger has not commented on the matter.

Diaz has played 43 times for Colombia and joined Liverpool last year from Porto.

He has made 11 appearances this season and scored three goals.

Diaz did not feature in Liverpool’s 5-1 Europa League victory over Toulouse on Thursday but had been expected to return for Nottingham Forest’s Premier League visit to Anfield on Sunday. Unfortunately, he didn’t play as Liverpool won 3-0 over Nottingham Forest.

LUSAKA – We welcome the news that former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has decided to come out of retirement and join the political fray once more.

From the onset, we wish to indicate that former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has a democratic and human right to belong to any political party of choice.

He also has democratic and political rights to come out of retirement and rejoin the political battlefield to which we wish to welcome him wholeheartedly.

This provides us with a platform to engage him as an equal competitor on the political landscape without being shielded by a cloth of a former Head of State.

The UPND stands ready to meet the former Retired Head of State on the political landscape in a battle of ideas.

Mr. Lungu should however be weary of a changed political environment to the one he presided over which was full of violence and cadreism, intolerance and failure to respect divergent views.

We pray and hope that Mr. Lungu will learn to operate within the prevailing peaceful political environment devoid of pangas and political violence.

Zambia has been a peaceful nation in the last two years under the leadership of the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema and any attempts to deviate the country from that trajectory will be met with the rule of law.

We now call on Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa to quickly enforce the law on former Presidents conditions of service which the former Republican President has voluntarily forefeited.

The UPND further calls on members of parliament from across political divide to take keen interest in the latest developments and ensure that what needs to be done is done in earnest.

The UPND once more welcomes Mr. Lungu to the political front and wish him well.

Edgar Lungu Cannot Automatically Reclaim PF Presidency Unless Through A Convention As His Resignation Passed 30 Days Legal Ultimatum

0

FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU CANNOT AUTOMATICALLY RECLAIM PF PRESIDENCY UNLESS THROUGH A CONVENTION AS HIS RESIGNATION PASSED 30 DAYS LEGAL ULTIMATUM

Legal implications ahead of Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL)’s move to return to active politics

Section 2 of SI 592 of 2023 of 9th May, 2023 directed all political parties to replace all its leaders who are no longer holding the elective positions within 30 days; *” that where an elected office bearer resigns, dies or is removed from office for whatever reasons, the Registrar shall ensure that the society holds elections for the appointment of the new office bearer within (30) thirty days from the insuance of the directive”

Based on this directive Miles Sampa quickly organized a convention to replace ECL and thereafter submitted the evidence of the exercise to the Registrar of Societies backed up with the High Court summons. Regarding the legality of the convention that is a million question to answer based on the Precedence that was set in 2014 by electing ECL without casting a vote but merely raising a fist ✊

Zeroing on the former ruling party as the biggest opposition party in the country;

Q1. Did ECL resign as the Party President of PF?
The answer is YES , through the letter he wrote to the Secretary to Cabinet in August, 2021

Q2. Is there evidence to show ECL really resigned from PF?*
The answer is YES ; Cabinet upon receiving the letter of resignation from ECL started giving ECL his retirement benefits. The vivid evidence is the house ECL has been living in Ibex since August, 2021 being rented by government. For ECL to have accepted to live in a government rented house in Ibex is evidence enough that he agrees that he really resigned.

Another, evidence the PF themselves as a Party invited for whoever was interested to replace ECL to come forward apply and pay K200, 000 nomination fees of which more than 10 applicants did.

Q3. Is ECL still PF President?
The answer is categorically NO , as his acceptance to be given government services of a retired head of state are there for everyone to see.

Therefore, legally if one resigns from his post has about 30 days to rescind his decision and that once the 30 days elapse you cannot claim your seat and that will be an illegality.

Furthermore, the Patriotic Front Constitution does not have a provision for rescinding a resignation and even if it had such a provision, any law that is in conflict with the Constitution is Null and Void.

It must be noted that the Constitution Court already gave a ruling regarding rescinding resignation which further cripples ECL move to come to active politics especially wanting to be automatically takeover PF Presidency. So the only way ECL can takeover PF Presidency is by holding another convention, otherwise his resignation is absolete and time bound.

THE RETURN OF ECL TO ACTIVE POLITICS- Kelly’s Kaunda

0

THE RETURN OF ECL TO ACTIVE POLITICS

By Kelly’s Kaunda

According to ECL, the sixth President, he was returning to active politics because he could not stand idly by and watch PF politically mutilated and rendered incapable of playing any meaningful role in the country’s democratic space. The immediate and most obvious trigger for what is, at any level, the most significant decision any former head of state can make, is the dramatic decision by Miles Sampa to hold a convention that elected him President of the Patriotic Front (PF) and the developments that have been unfolding since then.

Several questions immediately arise, among them: what difference will ECL make to the internal politics of the PF? Will Miles Sampa bow out of the way for ECL? Do we see the end of the legal wrangles that PF is engulfed in? How much of a challenge will PF under ECL be to HH, UPND and its alliance partners in government? Will or should the opposition rally behind ECL and form an alliance with PF for purposes of mounting a united front against the ruling party?

I do not have all the answers to these questions. In fact, I have more questions than answers. Even some of the answers I have, am not sure how satisfactory they are. All I know is that the dynamics of politics are bound to undergo some degree of change and uncertainty occasionally. My immediate contribution to this development is that I wish the country did not come to this. I wish PF had moved on without ECL returning to active politics. It’s not fair that we should be recalling public servants who have done their part.

Getting someone out of retirement is an indictment on those that had accepted the button of leadership as having failed to move beyond the point where the predecessor left off. It’s missing the opportunity to grow a new generation of leaders who had been honing their skills as they served under the leader that has done his part and retired leaving the stage for others. In parenthood, no parent takes joy in being called to resolve the marital problems of his or her children. While parents will not shun such calls, children must understand that it’s more joyous to bring grand children into the lives of aging folks than problems.

There is no guarantee that a PF under ECL will be a united one and formidable enough to move HH, UPND and its alliance partners in any significant direction. The same way that there were those that had the courage to oppose his leadership while PF was in office is the same way that there will be those that will oppose his come-back. Secondly, this is not the first time that a former President has returned to active politics in the history of Zambia. Kaunda did with far-reaching implications for both KK and UNIP, the former ruling party. FJT moved mountains – both political and legal to ensure Kaunda and UNIP were forever consigned to the remotest part of Zambia’s political boundaries.

Mwanawasa did not appreciate a politically active predecessor and did whatever he could to reduce FJT to a paper tiger. He largely succeeded. RB had tried to stage a comeback of sorts but, like it is in a tight soccer tournament, was marked at every move. He ended up rendering his support to another political player convinced that there was no appetite for his politics. The common thread running through the politics of former Presidents who had tried to remain politically active is that the incumbent did not treat them lightly. They went after them with every tool in the political play book. HH takes everything around ECL seriously and will therefore leave no stone unturned to go after him. It’s the name of the game. Like the cliché goes: don’t hate the player, hate the game.

While this has been the history of politics as it concerns former Heads of State who have tried to come back, it’s not to suggest that the outcome will always be the same. Politics may have precedents, but the latter does not fix nor accurately predict the future. It’s only for purposes of facilitating intelligent analyses or intelligent guesses. Looking at precedents is a way of admitting that as human beings we do not have the same predictive capabilities as those of the Most High.

MILES SAMPA NOT PF PRESIDENT, WE DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM, SAYS PF CENTRAL PROVINCE LEADERSHIP

0

MILES SAMPA NOT PF PRESIDENT, WE DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM, SAYS PF CENTRAL PROVINCE LEADERSHIP

The Patriotic Front Central province chairperson Mr Billy Sichamba was yesterday on 28/10/2023 in Lusaka attending the memorial service for the late President Mr Michael Chilufya Sata, mhsrip. In the team of Provincial chairperson was the MCC Ms Thabiso Mizinga and the Central province women’s information publicity secretary madam Adora Alinedi Phiri. Central province chairperson Mr Billy Sichamba said “the central province leadership is not going to tolerate any form of indiscipline by endorsing Miles Sampa for the party President. The province did not take part in his illegal convertion and it is for this reason why we challenge him to provide the names of the delegates who attended and voted for him at his illegal convertion especially those from the structures in central province.

However there has been a turn of events as sixth Republican President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu has announced that he is getting back to active politics. All loyal PF members are encouraged to remain strong and focused.

He said and I quote “As long as I live, I will not allow PF to die”.

He further continued stating that he will also not allow opportunistic individuals to destroy the party.

Therefore, after a careful and deep reflection and wide consultations, following naked efforts by those in power to annihilate the biggest opposition party in Zambia today, the PF, using their stooges and institutions of governance, I have decided to return to active politics to continue as President of the party.

As I get back to my party leadership role, I call for unity of purpose. I will need to work with everyone. And all those shenanigans of some mischievous characters holding illegal conventions come to an end here and now, today!

And in order to rescue the Zambian people from this emerging want on destruction of democracy
By those in power, I invite all the opposition parties to join forces with us in PF.

This is not about Edgar Chagwa Lungu. I am not doing this because I have an ambition to become President again. Any, among the opposition leaders, can become President.

I am doing this in defence of democracy and I am ready to support any opposition leader that Zambians will think can best represent their aspirations and rescue them from the abrogation of the rule of law and the dictatorship we are witnessing today.

Therefore, I am ready to fight from the front, not from the rear, in defence of democracy. Those who are ready for this fight, come along. Those who are ready, let’s go. As for me, I am ready for anything!

If I have to die, this will be a good cause that I will gladly die for. Whatever happens, let it happen but democracy must thrive. The will of the Zambian people must not be stiffled by anyone, not even those who are wielding power today.

So I say to my comrade and dear friend Fred M’membe, that come along and join hands with me in this fight for democracy.

Harry Kalaba, come along!
Wynter Kabimba, come along!
Kelvin Bwalya Fube, come along!
Chishala Kateka, come along!
Saboi Imboela, come along!
Jackson Silavwe, come along!
Sean Tembo, come along!
Kasonde Mwenda, come along!

In short, all the opposition parties, let’s join hands and fight this dictatorship being imposed on us by those in power.
All Zambians that believe in democracy, come along!

Come along! Come along! Together, let’s defend the democracy we fought for over three decades ago.

I am back to active politics as PF president elected in 2021 with a mandate up to 2026. The PF will hold a general conference at the right time to choose a leader before the next elections in 2026. After the conference, I will handover to whoever will be elected to lead the PF in the 2026 general elections.

For now, I am prepared to suffer all manner of consequences for choosing to
defend and protect democracy in Zambia, for choosing to protect the mighty PF from all those intending to kill it. Long live PF!

I thank you, and may the almighty God continue to shine upon our country, Zambia.

Issued by the Patriotic Front central province WIPS
Madam Adora Alinedi Phiri

FULL SPEECH: I am Back To Active Politics As PF President Elected In 2021 With A Mandate Up To 2026- EDGAR LUNGU

0

SPEECH BY ZAMBIA’S SIXTH PRESIDENT, DR EDGAR C. LUNGU, DURING THE 9TH MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE LATE MR MICHAEL CHILUFYA SATA, 5TH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA, AT THE CATHEDERAL OF CHILD JESUS IN LUSAKA ON OCTOBER 28, 2023

SALUTATIONS

WE GATHER HERE TODAY TO REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF ZAMBIA’S FIFTH PRESIDENT, MR MICHAEL CHILUFYA SATA. ZAMBIANS STILL REMEMBER THE GREAT LOSS THEY SUFFERED FOLLOWING HIS DEATH, NINE YEARS AGO.

WE CONTINUE TO REMEMBER MICHAEL SATA AS A DETERMINED FREEDOM FIGHTER, A PRAGMATIC AND FEARLESS LEADER, A DEMOCRAT, AND MENTOR TO MOST OF US.

ALL THOSE WHO INTERACTED WITH MICHAEL SATA WILL TELL VARIOUS EXPERIENCES WITH HIM, DRAWING VARIOUS LESSONS FROM HIS LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT STYLES.
AND I CAN SAFELY PREDICT ONE COMMON LESSON, FOR MOST OF THE PEOPLE. IT WAS MR SATA’S RARE ABILITY TO EMBRACE ENEMIES AND WORK WITH THEM.

I DON’T HAVE TO MENTION NAMES OF THE VARIOUS POLITICIANS WHO EARLIER CROSSED PATHS WITH MR SATA AND LATER WORKED CLOSELY WITH HIM EITHER IN THE PARTY OR GOVERNMENT. THAT’S HOW BIG-HEARTED PRESIDENT SATA WAS. AND THAT’S HOW HE MENTORED US. SOME PEOPLE WHO INSULTED HIM, WHO RIDICULED AND EVEN PHYSICALLY ABUSED HIM, HE FORGAVE AND EMBRACED THEM.

THIS IS A LESSON WE SHOULD CARRY ON AS WE CONTINUE TO HONOUR HIS MEMORY AND ENSURE THAT WE WORK TOGETHER IN DEFENDING AND PROTECTING ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY.

OF COURSE, PRESIDENT SATA LEFT AN INDELIBLE LEGACY IN THE THREE YEARS HE RULED ZAMBIA, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREA OF INFRASTRURE DEVELOPMENT.
NO WONDER SOME PEOPLE DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID, IMMEDIATELY AFTER SUCCEEDING HIM, THAT ‘I HAD NO VISION BUT THAT OF MR. SATA”.

ALL I WAS SAYING WAS THAT THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THE PF IN GOVERNMENT TO REINVENT THE WHEEL FOLLOWING PRESIDENT SATA’S DEATH SINCE THERE WERE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES RUNNING AND REQUIRING COMPLETION AS ENVISAGED IN OUR PF MANIFESTO.

THAT’S HOW PRESIDENT SATA’S LEADERSHIP STYLE TOUCHED AND INFLUENCED ME.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOU PROBABLY MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT THIS YEAR’S MEMORIAL FOR PRESIDENT SATA HAS BEEN PRECEDED BY URGLY SCENES PAINTED BY SOME OF OUR MEMBERS AND LEADERS.

THEIR MANEUVERS ARE A CLEAR ATTEMPT TO ASSAULT THE MIGHTY PATRIOTIC FRONT WHOSE CONTINUED LEADERSHIP MR SATA ENTRUSTED ON ME AND MY COLLEAGUES, TO BE STEWARDS.

I HAVE BEEN QUIET FROM THE TIME I PEACEFULLY AND WILLINGLY HANDED OVER POWER TO MY BROTHER WHO IS NOW IN STATE HOUSE. BUT I HAVE BEEN WATCHING CLOSELY MATTERS OF GOVERNANCE AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE COUNTRY.

IT IS NOT DIFFICULT FOR ANY WELL-MEANING ZAMBIAN TO NOTICE THAT THE RECENT EVENTS IN OUR PF PARTY HAVE BEEN INSTIGATED BY THOSE IN GOVERNMENT WHO APPEAR DETERMINED TO KILL DEMOCRACY IN ZAMBIA, FOR SELFISH POLITICAL REASONS.

BUT LET ME PUT IT ON RECORD THAT FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE, I WILL NOT ALLOW THE PF TO DIE. PRESIDENT MICHAEL SATA, IN HIS DEATH, LEFT US A VIBRTANT POLITICAL ORGANISATION IN POWER. THEREFORE, I WILL NOT PERMIT THAT, WHILST I AM ALIVE, THE PF IS DESTROYED UNDER MY WATCH.

I WILL NOT ALLOW THE MIGHTY PATRIOTIC FRONT TO DIE JUST LIKE I WILL NOT ALLOW FACTIONS WITHIN THE PARTY. I WILL ALSO NOT ALLOW OPPORTUNISTIC INDIVIDUALS TO DESTROY THE PARTY.

AND IN ORDER TO RESCUE THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE FROM THIS EMERGING WANTON DESTRUCTION OF DEMOCRACY BY THOSE IN POWER, I INVITE ALL THE OPPOSITION PARTIES TO JOIN FORCES WITH US IN PF.

AS FOR ME, I AM READY FOR ANYTHING!

IF I HAVE TO DIE, THIS WILL BE A GOOD CAUSE I WILL GLADY DIE FOR. WHATEVER HAPPENS, LET IT HAPPEN BUT DEMOCRACY MUST THRIVE. THE WILL OF THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE MUST NOT BE STIFFLED BY ANYONE, NOT EVEN THOSE WHO ARE WEILDING POWER TODAY.

SO I SAY TO MY COMRADE AND DEAR FRIEND, FRED M’MEMBE, THAT COME ALONG AND JOIN HANDS WITH ME IN THIS FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY.

HARRY KALABA, COME ALONG!
WYNTER KABIMBA, COME ALONG!
KELVIN BWALYA FUBE, COME ALONG!
CHISHALA KATEKA , COME ALONG!

AFTER THIS CONFERENCE, I WILL HANDOVER TO WHOEVER WILL BE ELECTED TO LEAD THE PF IN THE 2026 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

FOR NOW, I AM PREPAPRED TO SUFFER ALL MANNER OF CONSEQUENCES FOR CHOOSING TO DEFEND AND PROTECT DEMOCFRACY IN ZAMBIA, FOR CHOOSING TO PROTECT THE MIGHTY PF FROM ALL THOSE INTENDING TO KILL IT. LONG LIVE PF!

I THANK YOU, AND MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD CONTINUE TO SHINE UPON OUR COUNTRY, ZAMBIA.

OLD HABITS DIE HARD – SECRET PRIVATISATION IS BACK- Fred M’membe

OLD HABITS DIE HARD – SECRET PRIVATISATION IS BACK

The systematic dismantling and disposal of parastatal assets by this corrupt UPND puppet regime amounts to “back-door privatisation”.

The relentless push to dispose of some parastatal assets and dismantle the entities to pave way for private companies linked to State House or associated with UPND politicians is a well-calculated evil scheme.

We are aware of how some parastatals are being reconfigured to allow both old and newly registered private companies with links to State House to begin running operations of specific departments in these parastatals at a huge cost to the taxpayers.

For instance, we know that some parastatals have deliberately shut down operations in some departments citing costs only to subcontract or outsource services from certain identifiable private companies linked to State House at a prohibitive rate.

We are also aware of the ongoing scheme to dispose of numerous assets belonging to these parastatals in order for individuals and private companies linked to State House to be the ultimate beneficiaries.

There are many examples that we could cite in this article that expose this systematic, corrupt collusion and asset stripping by this regime together with its allies in the business community and parastatal organisations.

We have said it before and we’ll say it again; the people who presided over this country’s worst “economic holocaust” – the privatisation programme – are back to finish us off.

These shameless, greedy elements have done nothing major to talk about since they came into power, yet they’re quick to sell our country’s assets to themselves for nothing. Baisa mukuwina, mukwiba. Ni ba pompwe munshibila nsala! And quite clearly they don’t care about the future of the country anymore.

Let the Zambian people not be under any illusion that what is currently happening to the parastatals is normal. There is “back-door” privatisation of parastatal assets taking place, and the culprits are known for their corruption and abuse of power.

This is a thieving regime that will stop at nothing to achieve their goal of enriching themselves.

But this endless pursuit of vanity will backfire someday soon. They should not think they can always get away with this corruption and theft of our country’s wealth and resources.

The day is coming when they will be made to account for their crimes against the people of this country, with everything they’re corruptly acquiring now repossessed and handed back to the rightful owners – the citizens.

Filapwa! Mukasebana ba pompwe nombaline.

PF drama takes new twist as Lungu quits pretending, declares himself PF president

THE drama in PF took an epic and mouth-watering turn yesterday as Edgar Lungu quit pretending that he was not in active politics and announced himself president of the wrangle-plagued former ruling party.

Lungu’s public announcement that he had returned to active politics came barely 24 hours after his henchmen, Given Lubinda and Raphael Nakacinda whom he tasked to secure the PF presidency for him were out-maneuvered by Matero member of parliament, Miles Sampa.

On Tuesday, Sampa was overwhelmingly voted president at an extraordinary general conference that his opponents in the party have cried and insisted was illegal.

On Friday afternoon, High Court Judge Situmbeko Chocho cancelled an ex-parte interim injunction she had awarded to Nakacinda two days earlier stopping Sampa from discharging his duties as PF president.

Judge Chocho said she had been deceived into awarding the application.

The cancellation of the court order effectively endorsed Sampa as the president of the PF until an inter-party hearing on November 21.

But as Lungu spoke at the nineth memorial service of the party’s founder and late president Micheal Sata at Lusaka’s Cathedral of the Child Jesus yesterday, he used the opportunity to announce his political comeback.

Although Lungu’s announcement of retuning to active politics did not surprise anyone who has been observing his jogging routines and public appearances, the former president shocked political pundits when said he was returning as PF leader.

“I am back to active politics as PF president elected in 2021 with a mandate to 2026,” Lungu announced.

He said at an appropriate time, the PF would hold a general conference where the party would choose a leader before the next general elections.

“After this conference, I will handover to whoever will be elected to lead the PF in the 2026 general elections,” he added.

Lungu said the chaos in the party had been instigated by “those in power” and would not allow PF to die as long as he lived.

“I will not allow the mighty Patriotic Front to die just like I will not allow factions in the party. I will also not allow opportunistic individuals to destroy the party,” he warned.

Lungu said his return to active politics was after “careful and deep reflection and wide consultations following naked efforts by those in power to annihilate the biggest opposition party in Zambia today using their stooges and institutions of governance”.

“As I get back to my leadership role, l call for unity of purpose. I will need to work with everyone and all those Shenanigans of some mischievous characters holding illegal conventions must come to an end here and today,” Lungu warned.

The former president also clarified that his destitution of vision in governing the country is that his predecessor late president Micheal Sata had already brewed a plan for infrastructure development and there was no need to be inventive.

He implored leaders of different opposition political parties whom among them he maltreated during his reign, to join forces with him and trouble his successor in defence of democracy.

“I am ready to fight from the front and not from the rear those who are ready for this fight come along as for me, I am ready for anything,” declared Lungu.

“For now I am prepared to suffer all manner of consequences for choosing to defend and protect democracy and the PF from all those intending to kill it.”

But before Lungu could even arrive home after his announcement, PF Secretary General Morgan Ng’ona had already responded saying Lungu needed to re-apply before being admitted back to the PF as an ordinary member in line with the party constitution.

Although it is not clear weather Ng’ona will re-admit Lungu back to the PF, let alone allowed to the helm of the party, one thing is for sure, bundle-depleting drama starring PF continues.

After his massive electoral defeat in 2021, Lungu wrote to Cabinet Office on August 26 announcing his resignation as PF president and from active politics.

“In view of the clear provisions of the Former President Laws of Zambia, I hereby write to inform you that I have decided to resign as PF president and indeed from active politics” read part of the letter addressed to then Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr Simon Miti.

“Please, find my resignation letter to the PF Party chairman attached for your reference,” concluded Lungu.

My marriage collapsed because I delayed grieving for my dead mother” Jim Iyke
In a recent and deeply revealing interview with popular media personality Toke Makinwa, the renowned actor Jim Iyke shared how delayed grief had ended his marriage

At the beginning of the interview, Jim Iyke initially appeared reluctant to go into the subject of his marriage and divorce. However, as Toke Makinwa gently prodded him to share his story, he provided insight into the very reason for his relationship’s dissolution.

Jim Iyke attributed the end of his marriage to a delayed grief. He disclosed that the issue lay in his inability to properly grieve for his late mother. The actor confessed that he had postponed the grieving process, and when he finally confronted this sorrow, it had already done havoc on his marriage. His mother held an extraordinary place in his heart, and her passing was an especially devastating blow. Jim Iyke recounted receiving the heart-wrenching news of his mother’s demise during a BBC interview, leaving him utterly shattered.
He also shared that he was in the midst of constructing a house for his beloved mother before she died.

Jim Iyke also revealed that he had to step into the role of the strong male figure in his family, being the only male child. This left him with little time for emotional expression. While others in his family mourned openly, he assumed the role of a pillar of strength.

It was only after the conclusion of the burial ceremonies that Jim Iyke began to confront his own emotions. He initially struggled to identify the source of his inner conflict until he found himself arguing over trivial matters, such as his mother’s belongings, particularly her jewelry. His inability to part with her possessions showed him that his mourning process had yet to run its course.

During this challenging period, Jim Iyke’s wife attempted to provide emotional support and love, but he admitted that he was incapable of reciprocating her affections. Instead, he transferred the bulk of his affection to their child, which created tension in his marriage. He recounted his wife’s understandable jealousy as he showered their child with attention at a time when she needed it as well.

In an attempt to address the emotional turbulence Jim Iyke was experiencing, his wife suggested therapy as a potential solution. However, he hesitated, clinging to a traditional belief that therapy was not suitable for an African man like him. Looking back, he regrets not having embraced this opportunity for professional help.

His wife eventually reached a breaking point, realizing that Jim Iyke’s ongoing mourning for his mother had left their relationship in ruins.

Despite the dissolution of their union, Jim Iyke speaks fondly of his former spouse and holds her in high regard. He cherishes the memories of their time together and the partnership that marriage offered. In fact, he expressed his enduring love for the institution of marriage and his desire to explore it once more in the future, embracing the opportunity to be responsible for and share his life with another

South Africa win record fourth Rugby World Cup in dramatic final

0

South Africa clinched a record fourth Rugby World Cup title by doing just enough to deny 14-man New Zealand and retain their crown in a helter-skelter final in Paris.

The Springboks seemed to have control when, with Handre Pollard’s dead-eyed goalkicking having already given them a 9-3 lead, Sam Cane caught Jesse Kriel high in the 27th minute.

The New Zealand captain was shown a red card on review and another Pollard penalty left the All Blacks a man down, nine points behind and in deep trouble.

But New Zealand rallied, rode their luck and dragged themselves back into the game. Richie Mo’unga kicked a penalty before the break and Beauden Barrett scooped up a loose ball and slid in after the interval to cut South Africa’s lead to 12-11.

Both teams pushed for a decisive score in an enthralling, lactic-drenched final quarter, but neither found one, with Jordie Barrett missing a long-range 73rd-minute penalty and the Springboks clinging on for a third successive one-point victory in the knockout stages.

Captain Siya Kolisi clutched his head in disbelief as he danced off the bench and towards his team-mates on the final whistle.

His side are the first team to win the tournament back-to-back away from home – a statistic Leinster-bound coach Jacques Nienaber underlined in the build-up – and are now the undeniable dominant force in World Cup history.

Their latest victory means the Springboks have won half of the eight tournaments they have taken part in. South Africa were absent from the first two editions because of the sporting exile imposed by the rest of the world in reaction to the country’s apartheid government.

In that era, the Springboks were hated by many black South Africans. But under the leadership of Kolisi – the team’s first black Test captain – they have won backing from across the spectrum of the Rainbow Nation.

Ian Foster’s four-year reign as New Zealand head coach ends within a whisker of the ultimate prize, having come under pressure in the build-up when his team dipped below their usual high historical standards. BBC News

Senegal opposition figure Sonko in intensive care, lawyer says

0

Detained Senegalese opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, who eight days ago resumed a hunger strike, is “very weak” and in an intensive care unit, one of his lawyers said.

Sonko briefly fell into a coma on October 23, Cire Cledor Ly said, adding that he had been able to speak with the politician a day earlier.

He said Sonko regained consciousness the same day but remained frail. “The situation is alarming — the doctors are giving him treatment that he is unable to refuse,” Cledor Ly said.

“I launch a solemn appeal to the head of state because he has the means to put an end to this situation,” he added. Sonko, who intends to contest the presidential election in February, has accused President Macky Sall of using legal procedures to torpedo his political career — an accusation the president denies.

Sonko has faced a series of legal battles over the past two years.

He was arrested and imprisoned on a string of charges in July, including fomenting insurrection, criminal association in connection with a terrorist enterprise and undermining state security over incidents dating back to 2021.

He began a hunger strike on July 30 but called it off on September 2 at the request of influential religious leaders, according to people close to him.

He had already been admitted to an intensive care unit in August but resumed the strike on October 17.

In May, he was handed a six-month suspended sentence in a defamation case.

On June 1, he was sentenced in absentia to two years in prison for morally corrupting a young person, sparking fatal clashes.

His name was removed from electoral lists following that conviction.

A judge last week ruled against his removal from the lists, but it is still not guaranteed that he will be able to run next year.

The General Directorate of Elections has refused to issue him sponsorship forms, arguing that the judge’s decision was “not final”.

President Sall announced in July that he would not seek a third term, which many argued would have been unconstitutional.

Absolute poverty experienced by one in 12 Italians – Report

0

A recent report has revealed that nearly one in every 12 Italians is grappling with absolute poverty, a consequence of soaring inflation in the country, according to Euro News. The report, published by the country’s National Statistics Institute (ISTAT) on Friday, highlights a distressing scenario where over 5.6 million Italians are unable to afford basic necessities such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare.

Over the past decade, the number of Italians living in “absolute poverty” has witnessed a dramatic surge, with 5.67 million individuals and 2.18 million families falling below the income threshold required to meet their fundamental needs. This increase has been particularly sharp over the last few years.

ISTAT underscores that the primary reason for this spike in the poverty rate is the significant inflation in Italy. In 2022, inflation surged to an estimated 8.7%. While it has moderated to 5.3% as of September 2023, this figure remains considerably higher than the European Central Bank’s target of close to, but below, 2%.

Of crucial note is that the rising cost of living has disproportionately affected lower-income families when compared to their wealthier counterparts. The government’s assistance to families struggling to pay their energy bills last year is believed to have mitigated the poverty rate’s increase, keeping it from reaching even more alarming levels.

Italian economist Tito Boeri commented on the recent statistics, expressing his concerns about the situation.

“‘Absolute poverty’ in Italy can be calculated to mean earning less than €817.56 per month after taxes if you live in a city in the north; earning less than €733 each month after taxes if you live outside of a city in the north; and earning less than €554 per month after taxes if you live outside of a city in the south.

“Italians in the south are also among the majority of the country’s poor. According to the ISTAT’s latest report, 10.7% of all poor families in Italy live in the south, with a total of 2,038,000 poor individuals and 699,999 poor families considered to be in absolute poverty.

“By contrast, some 1,832,000 poor individuals and 609,000 poor families live in the north (7.5% of all poor families) and 871,000 poor individuals and 311,000 poor families live in the centre of the country (6.4% of all poor families),” he maintained.

US reportedly preparing for Israel, Lebanon evacuations

0

The US is reportedly preparing to evacuate citizens from Lebanon and Israel.

Numerous US Air Force transport aircraft were spotted at the military part of Chania Airport on the Greek island of Crete on Thursday, according to the Athens-based newspaper Kathimerini.

The newspaper also published a photo of the airport showing US aircraft such as C-130, C-17 and KC-135 aerial refuelling tankers.

The Souda Naval Base and its airport is one of the most important US bases in the eastern Mediterranean. The US naval base and airport are located a few kilometres east of the port city of Chania.

Greece and the United States have significantly expanded their cooperation in recent years. The Greek government already announced on Tuesday that the US can use the Greek military airport of Eleusis, also known as Elefsina, in the west of the Greek capital for their transport aircraft.

The US State Department estimates that approximately 600,000 US citizens were in Israel, with an additional 86,000 believed to be in Lebanon, on October 7 when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby denied there were currently “active efforts” to evacuate US citizens from the region beyond charter flights on Tuesday.

Separately on Thursday, the US Department of Defence said it was deploying about 900 soldiers to the Middle East to bolster the protection of their troops against the backdrop of the conflict in Gaza citing “regional deterrence efforts.”

“I can confirm that since our initial force posture announcement, approximately 900 troops have subsequently deployed or are in the process of deploying to the US Central Command Area of Responsibility,” Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said, adding that some of them are being transferred from US missile battery units.

Ryder would not comment on where the troops would be deployed, other than to say “these forces… are not going to Israel” but rather “are intended to support regional deterrence efforts and further bolster US force protection capabilities.”

The US had previously sent weapons systems, two aircraft carriers and their strike groups to the Eastern Mediterranean to strengthen its posture in the region.

Uganda fights off pressure over anti-gay law

Uganda’s anti-homosexuality continues to bite as development partners put pressure on Museveni to reverse the law.

This week, the US issued another advisory, the second in four months since the law was passed to its citizens to be careful while in Uganda, traveling to Uganda, or doing business in the country.

Washington on Monday said US companies or citizens face risks while in Uganda, citing corruption and the human rights restrictions, including the recently passed anti-homosexuality law.

The American companies that operate in Uganda include Citibank, Prudential, John Deere, FedEx, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and American Tower Corporation.

Ugandan Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo downplayed the advisory, saying it may not have any impact because there are no US companies that have a significant investment to the level of hurting the economy if they shut down operations.

He says Uganda was already looking up to alternative investors.

Dr Fred Muhumuza, a development policy expert in Kampala, and who has worked at Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, says the US warning is not only to their companies but to any firm based anywhere and doing business with Uganda.

He says the warning goes beyond American firms as the US turns economic guns on the country. According to him, any company that deals with Uganda could face restrictions in other countries, including trading with US.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into Uganda rose from $1.36 billion in April 2022 to $1.5 billion for the year ending April 2023, contributing over four percent of Uganda’s GDP, according to the World Bank.

Reviving financing

The timing of the advisory is also suspect, especially at a time when the government is still holding talks with the World Bank with a view of reviving financing, which was very crucial for the economic health of Uganda, according to Dr Muhumuza.

The World Bank froze funding after the new law was passed. The economist says the US is not saying anything new, but various calls about corruption and uncoordinated policies by investors and citizens have not been heeded to by officials and government at large.

Vincent Bagiire, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told local media the government is engaging Washington to find out the importance of the advisory, while Ellen Masi, public affairs counsellor at the US embassy in Kampala, said companies will make their decisions and it will be up to them to incorporate the advisory in those decisions.

The advisory warned of potential risks to human rights activists, health workers, and members of minority groups such as LGBTQI+, adding that the anti-homosexuality law increased restrictions on human rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and “exacerbates issues regarding the respect for leases and employment contracts.”

After Parliament passed the law in May, US President Joe Biden called for the immediate repeal of the measures, which state, among other things, that engaging in acts of homosexuality would be an offense punishable by life imprisonment.

“The enactment of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act is a tragic violation of universal human rights. No one should have to live in constant fear for their life or be subjected to violence and discrimination. It is wrong,” Biden said.

He added that he had asked his National Security Council to assess what the law means for aspects of Washington’s engagement with Kampala, including services providing HIV/Aids relief, and other assistance and investments.

Biden also said his administration would consider slapping sanctions on Uganda and restricting the entry into the US of people engaging in human rights abuses or corruption.

The World Bank followed suit announcing suspension of funding to Uganda in August. “Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act fundamentally contradicts the World Bank Group’s values.

Eradicate poverty

We believe our vision to eradicate poverty on a livable planet can only succeed if it includes everyone irrespective of race, gender, or sexuality. This law undermines those efforts. Inclusion and non-discrimination sit at the heart of our work around the world.

Upon the enactment of the law, the World Bank deployed a team to Uganda to review its portfolio in the context of the new legislation.

“Our goal is to protect sexual and gender minorities from discrimination and exclusion in the projects we finance. No new public financing to Uganda will be presented to our Board of Executive Directors until the efficacy of the additional measures has been tested,” the Bank said in a statement in August.

President Museveni’s government has said it will not be intimidated by the US. Addressing his country’s 61st independence anniversary a couple of weeks back, the President indicated that he was facing pressure from the West over the anti-gay law, adding that he had told them not to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.

“Uganda will only happily work with all the countries that respect its sovereignty,” he said.

Uganda has different loan facilities with the World Bank worth billions of dollars, including $217 million for Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises Project, the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme worth $566 million, and the Electricity Access Scale-up Project worth $568 million.

When President Museveni signed the initial version of the anti-gay law in 2014, the World Bank postponed a $90 million loan intended for health sector support. In 2016, then World Bank president Jim Yong Kim said the law Uganda had passed in 2014 was “quite a bit more draconian than a lot of the laws that exist”, adding that it could lead to “not only to discrimination but endangerment”.

According to the 2023/24 budget estimates, Uganda plans to borrow about USh6.16 trillion ($1.58m) to fund its USh52 trillion ($13.78 million) budget. About 50 percent of the country’s health budget is funded by her two main donors; the EU and the US. The US contributes about 32 percent of total health spending and 76 percent of all foreign contributions to Uganda’s health sector.

The bank recently said that it will only resume funding once it is satisfied that the Ugandan government has made efforts to ensure that LGBTQI+ people are not mistreated or marginalized in the programs it funds and according to Dr Muhumuza, the US advisory could be calculated to warn the World Bank that it was not happy with what is happening in Uganda.

While the US hails the country’s good investment environment created by the country’s free market economy and liberal financial system, it blames corruption, weak rule of law, threats to open and free internet access (citing closure of Facebook for three years now), and an aggressive tax collection regime by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

The US also warned that the anti-gay law “creates additional opportunities for interference with business” because the law requires that suspected LGBTQI+ individuals be reported to the authorities, creating “additional avenues for corrupt actors to extract bribes, delay permits, and hinder competition.”

China hands over new parliament to Zimbabwe as ‘gift’« Prev

China on Thursday handed over to Zimbabwe a new $100 million parliament building that Harare says is a symbol of deepening relations between the two countries.

The imposing structure on the outskirts of the capital Harare was built on a space of 33000 square meters and comprises a six-story office complex and a four-story building housing the National Assembly and Senate.

The two buildings are linked by three bridges on each floor and the National Assembly can accommodate 400 people while the Senate chamber has a capacity of 150 seats.

It also has conferencing facilities, 15 committee rooms, office space for staff, and a car parking area.

Zimbabwe’s parliament described the building as a structure that “sits delicately on top of a hill, conjuring memories of the great Mutapa empire (a pre-colonial Zimbabwean kingdom), which was protected through the fortress on a hill.”

“The building competes well on an international scale, replete with modern features including incisive automatic firefighting machines, state-of-the-art interpretation systems, automatic ramps for wheelchairs, cafeterias, world-class broadcasting studios, and offices,” Parliament said.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa told guests at the handover ceremony that the new parliament building was “a symbol of progress and cooperation”.

“This marks a significant milestone in our enduring friendship with China,” Mnangagwa said.

“Over and above these projects, we have witnessed increased diplomatic and economic engagement between Zimbabwe and the People’s Republic of China.

“In addition, our country has seen many more Chinese companies investing in various sectors of the economy.

“The emergence of quality products from Zimbabwe, particularly citrus, entering the Chinese market is a welcome development.”

Over the last two decades, Zimbabwe has been leaning more towards China through its Look East Policy that was pushed by the late Robert Mugabe following the country’s isolation and sanctions by Western countries over alleged human rights violations.

China has been extending concessionary loans for infrastructure development in the country and companies from the Asian country are investing heavily in Zimbabwe’s mining and agriculture sectors.

The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe says trade between the two countries increased by 39.4 percent year to year to $2.43 billion between January and September this year, surpassing last year’s annual trade figures.

Zimbabwe exported $1.36 billion worth of goods to China and its imports from Beijing were $1.07 billion.

The new Parliament building, constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group, was fully funded by the Chinese government as “a gift to the people of Zimbabwe” and is located 18 kilometers from Harare’s central business district.

It is one of the signature infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe funded by China in recent years.

China has also extended loans worth billions of dollars to upgrade Zimbabwe’s two major airports, power stations, and dams.

Mnangagwa’s Regime attempts to arrest CCC MPs at airport, confiscates their passports

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime continues to be in the spotlight home and abroad due to unending allegations of suppression and persecution of dissent through torture, abductions and arrests.

On Thursday evening, opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MP Gladys Hlatywayo and senator Jameson Timba were allegedly held by security agents at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and their passports were confiscated for a while.

Hlatywayo said the agents were demanding to know where the opposition politicians were coming from.

“Myself and Sen. Jameson Timba just had a very bizarre experience at Harare International Airport where regime agents tried to arrest us and took away our passports, demanding to know where we were coming from. Surely ours is a banana republic! We are citizens and not subjects,” she said.

Earlier this week, former opposition MP for Mabvuku-Tafara, James Chidhakwa was reportedly abducted and tortured by unknown assailants. He was injected with an unknown substance before being dumped in Arcturus, severely injured.

Chidhakwa’s dreadlocks were shaved off using a sharp object. He is currently at a local hospital where party leader Nelson Chamisa and other officials are still visiting him.

This is happening at a time when the international community is already condemning the pre-trial detention of former CCC MP Job Sikhala who has been in prison for 501 days for allegedly inciting public violence.

Khanyo Farisè, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East and Southern Africa, argues that the incarceration of Sikhala “exemplifies how authorities are abusing the courts to silence opposition leaders.”

“Job Sikhala’s prolonged detention while he awaits trial is a gross miscarriage of justice and an indictment of Zimbabwe’s judicial system. It exemplifies how authorities are abusing the courts to silence opposition leaders, human rights defenders, activists, journalists and other critical dissenting voices.

“Authorities must stop weaponising the law to target opposition figures and ordinary citizens. The relentless harassment and intimidation of activists and human rights defenders via the courts must end. Everyone should be able to exercise their freedom of expression without any fear of reprisals.

“The right to a fair trial is recognised internationally as a fundamental human right and Zimbabwean authorities are required to respect it. The charges against him are politically motivated as based solely on the peaceful exercise of his human rights.

“The authorities have also failed to demonstrate the necessity of his detention awaiting trial. We call for his immediate and unconditional release. The international community must strongly condemn the continued harassment against him,” Farisè said.

Ugandan anger at plan to name road after slain tourists

0

A decision by Uganda’s government to name a road after two foreign tourists killed earlier this month has triggered outrage in the country.

British citizen David Barlow and his South African wife Emmaretia Geyer were shot dead on their honeymoon.

Police said the attackers also burned their car in the 17 October attack.

Some Ugandans have criticised the government for honouring the foreign couple yet excluding Eric Alyai, the Ugandan guide killed alongside them.

Authorities say the couple, from Berkshire in the UK, was on a visit to see gorillas and other primates at the Queen Elizabeth National Park when they were killed in an attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

ADF is an Islamic State-linked rebel group with a presence in western Uganda, but which mostly operates in the eastern part of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

“As cabinet, we took a decision that for these tourists, we are going to name one of the roads in Uganda after them,” Uganda’s minister for ICT and national guidance Chris Baryomunsi was quoted as saying by Uganda news website The Nile Post.

He did not reveal the name of the road.

As for Mr Alyai, the guide, he only said the government would support his family.

His family told the Ugandan television channel UBC that he had left behind a widow and one-year-old child.

But some Ugandans have said the government should also name a road after Mr Alyai.

“Eric (Alyai) too was part of this death and so he must be remembered for he died on duty. It would only be fair enough,” one Ugandan said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Our inferiority complex is high. No wonder the park where the couple met their death is named after a British Queen,” another X user said.

The government has also faced criticism for planning a memorial for the foreigners but failing to take any action to honour the many Ugandans killed by the ADF in previous attacks.

In June, ADF fighters raided a Ugandan school in a surprise attack, killing 41 children.

This is not the first time that Ugandan authorities have faced outrage over their handling of the deaths of the couple and their guide.

Last Saturday, the Uganda Wildlife Authority was criticsied after it posted a photo promoting the Queen Elizabeth National Park, just days after the deaths of the couple and their guide.

“It was an exciting morning today in Queen Elizabeth National Park as tourists enjoyed a game viewing,” the authority captioned the photo.

Some Ugandans said that promoting the park so soon after the attack was insensitive and lacked compassion.

“The callousness and lack of humanity displayed by those responsible for orchestrating this insensitive campaign is a shame for our country,” said Ugandan human rights activist Daniel Kawuma.

“It is deeply troubling how you use the scene of such a gruesome killing and post messages of an ‘exciting morning’ for tourists. It is incomprehensible how you could mock the victims and their grieving families by circulating happy photos of Queen Elizabeth before the bodies have even been laid to rest,” he added.

Tyson Fury claims controversial split decision win over Francis Ngannou

0

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury claimed a controversial split decision victory over former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia.

Ngannou, 37, put Fury on the canvas in round three after connecting with a left hook.

But while one judge scored it 95-94 in favour of Ngannou, two gave it to Fury at 96-93 and 95-94.

Fury’s WBC heavyweight belt was not on the line.

“That definitely wasn’t in the script,” Fury told TNT Sports.

“I got caught round the back of the head [for the knockdown]. I wasn’t hurt. I got up and got back to my boxing.

“He’s an awkward man and a good puncher and I respect him a lot. He’s given me one of my toughest fights of the last 10 years.”

Ngannou, making his professional boxing debut, came out tentatively behind the jab in the opening round and Fury seemed content with a slow start as he looked to get a read on his opponent.

Fury got a first taste of Ngannou’s power in round two, though, as a cut opened on the forehead of the Gypsy King when he ate a left hook.

Fury looked ill-prepared and sluggish and hit the canvas in round three when he was found behind the right ear with that same punch.

Perhaps still feeling the impact of that shot, he struggled to find his rhythm until the fifth round when he caught Ngannou with a straight one-two combination.

After a brief push back from Fury when he started to box at range and have success with his jab, Ngannou again began to land some heavy punches in the latter rounds.

It seemed the scorecards were against Fury and he appeared desperate when lunging forward in the seventh, missing Ngannou and falling to his knees – deemed a slip rather than a knockdown.

Ngannou boxed very smartly when he was able to close the distance, using his MMA skills to clinch and land shots to the body and head.

Fury’s face carried the damage as the final bell rang and Ngannou’s corner held his arms up high in the expectation that he was on the verge of pulling off the biggest shock in boxing.

But the scorecards controversially fell in the favour of the seasoned boxer, who won the commemorative ‘Riyadh champion’ belt and extended his unbeaten record to 35 – winning 34 and drawing one.

“My training camp was only three and a half months and I came into this with an injury,” Ngannou said. “But I don’t want to give excuses. I will look at what I can do next to improve my game to come back even better.

“Now I know I can do this, get ready. The wolf is in the house.”

Fury’s victory means a blockbuster bout with fellow heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the WBA, WBO and IBF titles, which has been signed, remains on the horizon.

An undisputed heavyweight contest, the first in four-belt era, has been mooted for 23 December, however, a cut and bruised Fury might struggle to turnaround so quickly. BBC News

Edgar Lungu’s Return Is Rubbing Himself With Human Faeces Twice In His Face Which Has Just Made Sampa More Legitimate- Sikaile Sikaile

LUNGU’s RETURN IS RUBBING HIMSELF WITH HUMAN FAECES TWICE IN HIS FACE WHICH HAS JUST MADE SAMPA MORE LEGITIMATE

In politics, timing is everything. This is a Rupiah Banda and Nevers Mumba reloaded.

Mr Lungu resigned from the party and politics in his quest to live on government pension.

By virtue of his resignation, which was widely accepted by his membership, he ceased to be president of PF. It is also good that he has voluntary given up his impunity and we now expect him to be treated according to the he operated under his administration. One thing here that needs to be clearly understood is that he has been living on sympathy.

Sampa sensed the power vacuum, existed and a position was there for the taking. All he needed was to organise a conference and got voted in, and the rest is history. Most of our politicians don’t learn and it is not surprising that Mr Lungu has driven into our history again.

The situation would have been easier for PF if Lungu came back a little bit earlier before Sampa changed the list of office bearers at the Registrar of societies. All the Constitutions indicate one of the ways to lose membership and position is, through resignation. And like I said in my my previous article if one thinks “Sampa is foolish” then it is that individual who is a fool.

Therefore, Lungu resigned and retired from both the party and active politics. Evidence is in the letter he wrote to his party and copied to secretary to the cabinet. Other pieces of evidence, the rentals he was being paid for by government. Only a retired man is entitled to those benefits.

It is in this vein that his return can not propel him to the top of PF presidency by claiming he was elected. That privilege expired when he submitted that resignation letter, which was accepted.

So this will be a lengthy court battle with Sampa, the matero mp. They will keep accusing the government of interfering in their affairs. When, in fact, not. It is a self inflacted wound. In simpler ways I can say Lungu has allowed the same people who rubbed him human faeces in his face prior to 2021 elections to repeat it again.

The move has come but, a little late. Lungu will never learn.
If you resign as a headteacher and get your benefits. When you decide to come back, the best you can be is a pupil teacher and not a headteacher.

At least, he should have learnt from Putin, who installed Medvedev. Who was willing to step aside when Putin returned.

What Lungu should have done was to allow a conference to elect a dummy president.

Say, Nakachinda, who would be willing to resign when Lungu returned. That would have allowed another election, which Lungu, then, would have contested. It is also high time the HH led government should tell us how Zambia’s public resources were used to destabilize other countries security (Rwanda). We need to get busy now as a nation.

As things stand, Sampa is more legitimate.

Mr Lungu, playing hide and seek, has made you late. You can only be a leader of another faction.

Asanga baleteya.

HERE IT IS … ECL TESTING HOW DEEP THE WATERS ARE BLINDLY …. Watch the space if you know him better . In this game, M’membe is a tactician .

ECL will finish all the true greens who are voicing out ; it seems they have forgotten how he dealt with KAMBWILI, Kabimba , Miles , Kalaba , Fred M’membe and others when he first aspired as Presidential candidate .

It is individual like ECL who can easily be blackmailed and used to jump into the flame of fire by simply telling him that fire no longer burns .

Next to be hammered is KAMBWILI , GBM , Chitalu Chilufya , Chitotela , Sunday Chanda , among others to be axed and shown the door .

Right now , ECL is testing how deep the waters are …, then he will bite ! He is still scared of KAMBWILI and GBM …the spanner here is my foolish cousin Given Lubinda, being used .

The game is on , Given Lubinda is fooling ECL by blackmailing him on key enemies , most likely , he may take a foolish step by joining hands with M’membe as this is what M’membe has already calculated.

Cunningly, M’membe could also be feasting on PF because that is his stumbling block right now . When PF makes noise M’membe is completely overshadowed and remains completely impotent.

M’membe is not foolish ; he knows which PF officials can oppose the PF- SP affair or alliance and will use Lubinda cunningly to whip PF staunch ,key political spinners .

In this game , my elder brother Emmanuel Mwamba has been beaten . Unfortunately, it is these games M’membe understands well. Clearly , the Lubinda ,ECL , M’membe affair should worry all those wanting to aspire for PF leadership.

As for my brother , Nakacinda , he is another lopsided human being who takes time to read between lines . They will use him nicely , give him cash , and later dump him . Nakacinda is on Fred M’membe’s menu .

My comrade Chilufya Tayali , who stands his ground on what he wants to achieve , regardless of how many people oppose him , and I admire him for that , long before all this game started hatching , read the whole game and is far ahead of all of them .

As this game is going on , MPs are divided and the majority do not want ECL to continue ; only a few sober ones will speak out in a few days to come . Some have no confidence in themselves to win legal battles in the unlikely event that they are expelled so would rather focus on their constituency and not comment .

As for Mundubile’s and Kampyongos- these have lot their political campus , and do not know whether to swim or sink .

As for poor PF members , they are scattered and wondering which direction. Meanwhile , those who went ahead of them to SP , have already ascended to the throne and they do not want those who controlled things in PF to control them in SP as well. Herein lies total chaos !

Meanwhile , senior PF officials and MPs are hesitant to support M’membe as they believe he is too small and visionless a politician to offer allegiance.

The game is on…!

FIGHTING MILES FOR NOW IS POLITICAL SUICIDE BY THE ECL ALEBWELELAPO FACTION

Authored By Mupishi Jones

The ECL Alebwelelapo faction must sober up and do an objective and rational self introspection. As things stand they have no choice but to retreat, give Miles political space for their own freedom.

Creating political battles against Miles Sampa will boomerang badly on themselves. As things stand, Miles is standing on firm legal and political ground.Miles is strategical. He calculated his political moves long before the alebwelelapo crew knew it.

In fact, they were underating him.Meanwhile Miles knew that it was going to be extremely difficult to fight his way through by antagonizing both the ruling UPND and this ECL Alebwelelapo crew.He decided for now to play it cool with the governing party until he’s done with the clueless alebwelelapo crew.

Finally Miles’s political strategy has worked.
To the contrary, the ECL Alebwelelapo faction went all out attacking everyone on their way without a well calculated and planned political strategy.Their behavior was like an enraged elephant charging against imaginery enemies in the jungle.

They thought their real political enemy was President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND and failed to see what Miles was doing.

In the current state of affairs regarding corruption allegations against most of the alebwelelapo proponents, it’ll be suicide to embark on any political battles against Miles Sampa and the UPND.

It will be naive for the ECL Alebwelelapo faction to think they can handle both Miles and the UPND at the same time. This would be political suicide especially for those with active criminal and civil cases before the courts of law.ECL Alebwelelapo faction created a lot of political enemies both when they were in power and during their alebwelelapo convert schemes. To be honest,in an event that Zambians decided to remove the UPND government, they’d rather vote for Miles Sampa and not the ECL Alebwelelapo faction.

I can see most of the PF grassroot members abandoning the ECL Alebwelelapo faction to join Miles Sampa. These are the people with criminal and civil evidence against most senior alebwelelapo crew with court cases. The ECL Alebwelelapo faction must keep quiet before they force Miles to unleash another fatal sucker punch against them.

They must remember that Miles for now stands on firm legal and political ground whilst they’re on very slippery ground and therefore very vulnerable both collectively and as individuals. It is a fact that the UPND would rather work with Miles Sampa and not with what it considers criminals and corrupt alebwelelapo faction.

The Alebwelelapo faction must not make any mistake, the UPND general membership is still licking wounds from PF’s brutality, they still have unfinished political business with them. They must realize that although their focus was on President Hakainde Hichilema as their political enemy, to the contrary he has been their saviour, even risking rejection from his members just to avoid political retaliation.
I submit

Twisting Scriptures For Selfish Reasons; Case Of One Prophet Sunday Sinyangwe

0

It’s quite disheartening the clergy, particularly those from the ranks of the protestant movement, continue to use the scriptures for selfish reasons. One such character that stands out from the rest of the pack like a sore middle finger is one Sunday Sinyangwe, owner of one of the mega Church businesses in Lusaka.

During the just ended National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation; Sinyangwe invited former president Edgar Lungu who somehow found himself in his Church in Kanyama shanty compound to step forward.

“On behalf of the youth,” begun Sinyangwe as Lungu paraded himself before the vibrant congregation. “I am asking you to release us from whatever happened that day in the stadium.” He was of course referring to the booing Lungu suffered at the hands of the youth when he went to Heroes Stadium to handover the “instruments of power” to the newly elected president, Hakainde Hichilema.

“We need the mercies of God for all the abuse…..all the things that have been thrown at you….” continued the excited papa. “My humble request is for you to declare a release that it may be well with us; our blessings and prosperity are tied to you!”

Now wait a minute…..what exactly is the meaning of this? I don’t need a Bible scholar or indeed a prophet (I actually have a challenge recognising such grandiose titles as the real prophets only existed in Biblical times) to help me fathom the blessings and properity of our nation can be tied to an individual…..worse still, someone that only came to know Christ when he stepped inside the gates of State House for obvious reasons. What can deny a nation blessings or deter her from prosperity as the case may be with us isn’t a single human being but rather the relentless political violence , unbridled corruption and absolute plunder of national resources as we witnessed during the tenure of the man Sinyangwe shamelessly asked to pray for our beloved nation.

It’s actually embarrassing that these so-called men of God, or gold if you life, can arrogantly or igonarantly continue to use the pulpit to make outlandish declarations and peddle lies with a straight face as their gullible followers cheer on and ululate.

The papa is never shy of courting controversy. A few months before the elections, Sinyangwe who appeared to be seething with uncontrollable rage could be seen in a video that went viral on the internet discrediting and disparaging Hichilema and his political party UPND from the comfort of his pulpit as his audience applauded and chanted amen!

“Mr. HH and your leaders, I beg with you by the mercies of the Lord,” he pokes a warning finger into the camera. “Go before God and ask for mercy for what you did on Friday.”

The nation would remember that around that same period, there was a crucial council chairman by-election taking place in Kaoma, Western province which was marred by violence from PF cadres after sensing embarrassing defeat at the hands of a resurgent UPND. A UPND cadre was caught up in fracas and shot in cold blood. Instead of waiting for the police to conclude their investigations, the papa attempted to twist things in favour of the former ruling party PF. Isn’t a serious indictment on his part that some PF members ended up being arrested and for murder at the end of the day?

In the same video, Sinyangwe is seen bragging that he’s now taking to the pulpit to make a decree.

“If you don’t reverse what you did on Friday,” he continues daring Hichilema “You’ll never enter State House. Your party will be rejected. You’ll never sit on the throne!”

If outcome of the August 2021 general elections is anything to go by, then clearly, whatever Sinyangwe preached on that day wasn’t of God but his own fickle imiganation as the will of God finally prevailed amidst attempts to rid the elections. Last time we checked, Hichilema was sitting on the throne: providing much needed free education to our people; taking development direct to the masses through increased CDF; stamping out cadrerism in the stations and markets; uprooting political violence synonymous with PF and most importantly, reuniting the nation by appointing a cabinet that has a national character.

EU, US, DRC, ZAMBIA AND ANGOLA SIGN AGREEMENT FOR THE EXTENSION OF LOBITO CORRIDOR

EU, US, DRC, ZAMBIA AND ANGOLA SIGN AGREEMENT FOR THE EXTENSION OF LOBITO CORRIDOR

The EU has agreed a major new strategic partnership on critical raw materials value chains with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.

It was signed at the Global Gateway Forum which took place in Brussels on 26 October.

EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the further development of the “Lobito Corridor”, together with the US, DRC, Zambia, Angola, the African Development Bank and the Africa Finance Corporation.
The transport corridor will connect the southern part of the DRC and the north-western part of the Republic of Zambia to regional and global trade markets via the Port of Lobito in Angola.

The MoU outlines the collaboration between the different partners involved and defines roles and objectives for the development of the Lobito Corridor. The partnership draws from financial resources and technical know-how to accelerate the development of the transport route, including investments in digital access and agricultural value chains that will increase regional competitiveness.

Cooperation will focus on three areas: transport infrastructure investments; measures to facilitate trade, economic development and transit; and support to related sectors to fuel inclusive and sustainable economic growth and capital investment in the three African countries in the longer term.

“The Lobito transport corridor will be a game changer to boost regional and global trade”, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“The Lobito Corridor and partners’ strong ownership is an example of the transformative power of our strategic partnership with Africa,” added Urpilainen.

Once fully operational, the aim of the rail line is to enhance export possibilities for Zambia, Angola and the DRC, boost the circulation of goods and promote the mobility of citizens.

According to the US Department of State, the corridor represents the most significant transport infrastructure that the United States has helped develop on the African continent in a generation and will enhance regional trade and growth as well as advance the shared vision of connected, open-access rail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean.

“The Lobito Corridor goes beyond the railway connection between DRC, Zambia and Angola. This new connection will boost several industries such as raw materials and agriculture. In fact, Angola can play a key role to safeguard food security in the region through the Lobito Corridor”, said José de Lima Massano, Minister of State for Economic Coordination of Angola.

The US-EU investment partnership will combine financial resources and technical know-how to accelerate the Lobito Corridor development, including by launching feasibility studies for a new greenfield rail line expansion between Zambia and Angola, upgrading critical infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa and investing in digital access and agricultural value chains that will increase regional competitiveness.

As an immediate next step, the US and EU will support the governments in launching pre-feasibility studies for the construction of the new Zambia-Lobito railway line from eastern Angola through northern Zambia, building on a previous initiative to refurbish the railway section from the Lobito port in Angola to the DRC.

Besides providing a lower carbon footprint alternative to the traditional road transport, the Lobito Corridor can reduce the average travel time from 30 days to just 8, as the railway bypasses congested roads, border posts and ports encountered along different routes, according to the Africa Report.

TODAY IN ZAMBIAN HISTORY: THE 1980 COUP ATTEMPT

0

By Chainga Zulu

On October 27, 1980, both Zambians and the world were jolted when President Kenneth Kaunda made a startling announcement during a press briefing at State House. He revealed that on October 16, security forces had successfully thwarted an attempted coup d’état. According to his claims, this coup was allegedly sponsored by the South African Apartheid government and was originally planned for October 17. However, the intelligence services of the United States, the United Kingdom, and France dismissed the notion of South African government involvement, though individual operatives were not ruled out.
This raised questions of plausible deniability.

In this covert operation, a small group of Zambian professionals and Congolese dissidents had conspired to overthrow the increasingly unpopular President Kaunda. Miles Larmer identified the key figures within this diverse group of conspirators. Among them were Valentine Musakanya, a former governor of the Bank of Zambia and a prominent businessman who clandestinely financed the United Progressive Party (UPP), an offshoot of UNIP that posed a significant threat to the ruling party until its ban in 1972.

Another leader was Pierce Annfield, a white lawyer who had previously defended several opponents of UNIP, including Alice Lenshina and Simon Kapwepwe. Deogratias Symba, a Katangese militia leader, and Edward Shamwana, a lawyer and associate of Musakanya, were also part of this group. Additionally, Lt. Gen. Christopher Kabwe, head of the Zambian Air Force and Kaunda’s pilot, and Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda, who was providing military training to a private Congolese militia, were involved.

Interestingly, Yoram claimed that Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, who had passed away on January 20 of the same year, was aware of the plot and gave his blessings, even though he wasn’t involved in its planning.

According to Mumba’s account, other individuals directly involved included Elias Kaenga who was recruiting Zambian dissidents and Zaireans from Katanga, Col. Mkandawire, Major Macpherson Mbulo,Anderson Mporokoso, Albert Chilambe Chimbalile, Col. Albert Kaniki, Col. Modesto Kankunku, and Thomas Mulewa and Laurent Kabwita. Deogratias Symba’s militia had been in Mwinilung’a after being ousted from Katanga by Mobutu Sese Seko and his Western backers. Symba’s involvement was aimed at receiving reciprocal support to launch an attack against Mobutu.

Following the leak of details about the impending coup to the authorities, Annfield managed to escape the country. In contrast, his co-conspirators were less fortunate, lacking the necessary connections and ending up in detention. Andrew Sardanis, in his book “Zambia: The First 50 Years,” later claimed that Mundia Sikatana, one of the conspirators and Annfield’s law partner, acted as a government mole, reporting the plans to his cousin, who held a senior position at State House. Yoram Mumba interestingly attempted to exonerate Sikatana and instead pointed a finger at Andrew, alleging his involvement in the 1980 coup plot, subtly suggesting that he even sold the plan to Kaunda, the man who had provided him
with support and room to conduct business.

It was believed that Edward Shamwana, who was on the verge of being appointed Chief Justice of Zambia before the coup was foiled, would have led the subsequent interim government together with Musakanya.Musakanya and two other alleged conspirators suffered severe torture, an ordeal from which Musakanya never fully recovered. Four of the plotters, including Musakanya, were acquitted in August 1982, partly because evidence extracted during their interrogation was ruled inadmissible due to torture. Seven of the accused, including Shamwana and Symba, were found guilty in January 1983 and
sentenced to death. They were subsequently pardoned by Kaunda in 1990.

Charles Mwewa claims that despite their unsettling implications, coups provide an opportunity to understand the motivations of the plotters and give those in power a chance to honestly evaluate the state of the nation. Furthermore, coups offer lessons on pitfalls to avoid and issues that may lead to successful coups since politics often revolves more around perception than reality.

Kaunda would experience two more coup attempts, one in 1989 led by General Christon Tembo and the ‘controversial’ one in 1990 by Mwamba Luchembe. Kaunda responded with determination to these coup attempts but seemed reluctant to invest time in understanding their underlying causes. These coup attempts foreshadowed the defeat he would face in 1991.For most of the 1980 coup plotters, this event overshadowed all their prior accomplishments, as they are now primarily remembered for their involvement in the coup. For example, Musakanya had served as Minister of State, Governor of the Bank of Zambia, and Managing Director at IBM. While still the Governor of the Bank of Zambia, he famously criticized the one-party state and the tribal balancing system, claiming that the latter promoted tribal and ethnic-based politics at the expense of good
governance. His proposal for a limited term limit for the presidency ultimately led to his dismissal from the Bank of Zambia. Similarly, Shamwana was known as an exceptional litigator and one of the finest legal minds in the country.

My Thoughts!
1. Zambians have historically demonstrated their commitment to peaceful and democratic processes, notably by the ballot. It is essential to dispel any misconception that they may resort to violence or coup attempts when faced with grievances. Resorting to coups not only undermines the populace’s ability to determine their own fate but also establishes a concerning
precedent that subsequent generations might find difficult to resist replicating. President Kenneth Kaunda’s tenure, while marked by various achievements, constrained citizens’ capacity to exercise their democratic rights through the electoral process. The importance of safeguarding democratic principles and respecting the will of the people cannot be overstated in
a nation now known for its history of peaceful transitions and commitment to the democratic
ideal.

2. Interestingly, 3 out of 4 coup attempts in Zambia have been in October: 1980, 1988 and 1997.An intriguing pattern associated with the timing of such political upheavals.

3. Considering this year’s Independence Day theme, which emphasizes the acceleration of national development through the equitable distribution of resources, I firmly believe that General Godfrey Miyanda carries a distinct and vital responsibility to thoroughly document his life experiences and insights, creating a comprehensive literary legacy that would prove invaluable for future generations. Such contributions would not only provide profound insights into the events, challenges, and decisions that have shaped his lifetime but also align with the core principles of equitable resource distribution, including knowledge, history, and experiences. In this context, General Miyanda’s potential literary works would be a testament to his dedication to our nation and offer clarity on the seemingly contradictions that previous authors have offered on the 1980 attempted coup.

The Bare Dream of Peter Mutharika: Road to 2025

By Shatven

Often, it is a difficult thing to understand the desires of the heart. You can see yourself with a child but you are an infertile person, which people will only say is the dream of an infertile person.

Let’s be honest here, that in the history of Malawi, we have seen different heads of state who have served us in different ways. Each of them has a good and bad reputation. Today I didn’t want to talk about all these former presidents, I’ll just talk about the fresh former President who is simply called APM.

First of all, let us know that Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) is a former president, just to remind or inform our friends who don’t know intentionally or unintentionally.

When we call him a former president, we say with emphasis that we can call him persona non grata in terms of wanting to compete for the presidency, let us know that this is not a dream or a joke, and we ask our friends who are used to lying to their friends in social media that

APM will stop competing for the presidency. you are the president. Let us emphasize here that this is the dream of a childless person because it is something that is impossible and will never be possible until the end of the world.

Some people may want to judge me that I am a follower of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) party, who has just woken up to insult the cadets. but let me confirm here that there is no problem if you tell me or insult me, but let justice be spoken openly and flow like water.

We are told that APM is a professor of law, but he is the one who is insisting that he will stand up for the professors who learned to be called professors and reject him to contest as president. In this case, those of us whose brains are not rusted feel as if he may have lied that he studied law.

It seems that APM has signed a contract with newspaper publishing houses to receive a commission for getting their newspapers to be bought by people to read his nonsense.

When an elder person does not respect himself, it is always difficult for others to respect him, what APM is doing will not earn him respect among his fellow elders or young people.

But at the end of the story it will be known that APM has just wasted time. Dear fellow Malawians, please know that APM will not be allowed to stand as president in the upcoming elections, because he has already completed all his terms including the full year.

In the country of Malawi, a person is allowed to represent twice as president, if he is elected, and one term lasts for 5 years.

So some still don’t remember that he stood for the first time in 2014 and completed 5 years as a term, and he stood again in the 2019 elections which were not acceptable according to the court of law and the court ordered that the elections be held again.

Then after ruling for a full year and at the 2020 elections, he stood again to show his agreement with the court’s decision that the 2019 elections had problems and that it was necessary to hold another election in 2020 this was the decision of the APM and all the others that it is true, and one day if they insist on it, they will get the question that if you don’t know how did you run for president in 2020?

So let us confirm here that APM will not allowed to contest as president again, that is the dream of an infertile man as it is said.

What is known and disappointing to all Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters is that what APM is doing is destroying the DPP party because they are stubborn, unforgiving, unaccepting, and selfish.

Someone should not lie to him that the Malawians will vote for him because there are economic problems in the current administration, this is an open lie and the issue of the economy is not only the Malawi, the issue of rising prices is not only the Malawi.

So when he is at the page house, he should not think that the weaknesses of the current regime can wash him to get rid of the stinking smell he has on political affairs. Malawians can bewitched to reach the extent of voting for him then better to vote for Ras Chikomeni.

Right now APM is exactly a persona non grata on the political landscape.

LET NO ONE DISHONOR LATE PRESIDENT MICHAEL SATA, NALUMANGO

LET NO ONE DISHONOR LATE PRESIDENT MICHAEL SATA, NALUMANGO

VICE President Mutale Nalumango has implored the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) not to misuse the day of remembering it’s party founder the late President Michael Chilufya Sata for political tactics.

She has advised that the day should be used to give honour and respect to the late Sata’s hard work and not to cowardly bring out politics.

Mrs Nalumango said those that want to use funerals to bring out politics are cowards and that is why celebrations being held tomorrow, October 28th to commemorate the late Michael Sata should be done with honour.

The Vice President was responding to a question raised by Shiwang’andu area Member of Parliament Stephen Kampyongo who expressed concern on whether the opposition PF and other supporters will be allowed to pay their respects at the ninth anniversary of Mr Sata’s passing.

Mr Kampyongo further in his question also asked how Mrs Nalumango would remember the former President.

“I choose to remember my uncle as a practical person who made everybody laugh even when you did not like his idea because of the manner he put it. He was committed to the cause that he had. He was a hard worker.,”

He remained on the political scene for quite a long time. He was able to reach people’s hearts. That is Michael Sata and he worked hard in the PF which some people are destroying like you Kampyongo,” she said.

Mrs Nalumango said that there has never been any interference for such occasions and so Mr Kampyongo should be assured that President Sata will be celebrated with honour.

“Unless the honourable member who is whip of the opposition is saying that there is something strange which they are planning because there has never been interference. And there has never been a rally at a grave yard. So why should you be concerned? So go and honour and show respect by not creating another environment.

“Let no single person bring dishonor on the day that we are remembering Michael Sata. I read somewhere where someone said that they will be using funerals to utter politics. But I stand here as not only as Vice President, but on the title as mother, let us not use anyone for political purposes. Let us stand strong for what you stand for politically, but do not misuse any situation. Are you cowards to use people’s funerals for political gain?” She said.
