ZAMBIA’S DEBT… WHAT NEXT?

0

ZAMBIA’S DEBT… WHAT NEXT?

1. Signing of the MOU with the Official Creditors.

2. Signing of agreements with creditors on a bilateral basis to give the MOU legal effect.

3. Continued engagement with bond holders with a view of reaching an agreement for US$ 6.8 billion due to that group based on the principles agreed with the official creditors.

4. PAYING DEBTS DUE BASED ON AGREEMENTS SIGNED

SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT??

1. Delivering significant improvement in economic performance which translates into an improved quality of life for citizens is crucial;

2. How will cashflow relief be utilised? It must go towards stimulating the economy… support the vulnerable… Priority investment… The country must spend/ invest wisely in order to improve the country’s capacity to, among other things, pay the debts.

3. Zambia needs to work on improving economic resilience. What do I mean? How do we protect the economy from shocks such as the pandemic which can derail a lot of the progress made? It’s time to actualise diversification.

4. The country needs to understand and document the lessons from the past and ensure we do not end up here again.

5. Institutions need to be strengthened so that commitments made can be sustained irrespective of who is in government.

6. Citizens need to take a very keen interest in the financial affairs of the country.

7. When will Zambia’s Credit rating improve? When will the government’s domestic borrowing reduce thereby allowing the private sector more room to borrow more affordably?

8. How will businesses and individuals capitalize on the expected economic stability and improved confidence in the economy’s prospects?

Overall, there is still work to do to restore Zambia’s financial credibility, but because of this restructure the country has made a very significant stride in that direction.

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS WITH DR. MWELWA

Navigating the Turmoil: A Weekly Reflection on Power, Apologies, and Constitutional Conferences

Oh, what an eventful week it has been! If there’s one thing we can count on in our great nation, it’s a never-ending supply of entertainment and scandal. From debt restructuring to public apologies, we’ve had quite the spectacle to witness.

First up, we have the successful debt restructuring. Ah, yes, a cause for celebration indeed. Because what better way to address our struggling economy than by rearranging the numbers and pretending everything is perfectly fine? Who needs sustainable solutions when you can just play musical chairs with debt?

In addition to the uproar surrounding President Hichilema’s refusal to declare his assets, there have been other eyebrow-raising events this week that deserve our attention. Let us dive further into the intriguing developments that have unfolded before our eyes.

One such event is the astonishing rise in the number of apologies offered by public figures. It seems that every other day, someone new is stepping forward to express their regrets. Oh, how refreshing it is to witness such a display of remorse and accountability! We can only hope that these apologies are not merely empty words meant to appease the public but rather genuine reflections on past actions.

Meanwhile, the State Department of the United States of America weighs in with their Human Rights Report on Zambia. It is always fascinating to receive an outsider’s perspective on our beloved nation. After all, who better to judge our adherence to human rights than a country famed for its unwavering track record in that regard? Let us eagerly await their assessment, shall we?

Meanwhile, the Law Association of Zambia has made their concerns about police brutality known. It warms the heart to see such an esteemed organization advocate for the rights and safety of citizens. We can only hope that their statements are met with action and concrete measures to address the issue at hand.

Of course, the courtrooms have not been without their fair share of excitement this week. With bench warrants of arrest issued for Honorable Fube and Honorable Munir Zulu, one can only wonder what thrilling drama awaits us. Will justice prevail, or will this turn into yet another theatrical performance for the masses? Only time will tell.

And let us not forget the announcement of the tentative dates for the Constitutional and General Conferences by the Patriotic Front. Ah, the excitement is palpable! Who doesn’t love a good conference? It’s a fantastic opportunity for politicians to gather together, mingle, and perhaps even discuss matters of substance. Or perhaps it will be more of the usual grandstanding and empty promises. Either way, it promises to be an event of monumental proportions.

As we reflect upon these events, it is hard not to feel a mix of intrigue, skepticism, and amusement. The landscape of our nation continues to be a complex tapestry of contradictions, where actions speak louder than words, and the unexpected is to be expected. Let us hold onto hope for a better tomorrow, while embracing a healthy dose of skepticism and a readiness to question the status quo. For it is in this delicate balance that true progress and change can be forged.

THE ATTACK ON THE JUDICIARY AND THE EROSION OF THE STATE

The Attack on the Judiciary and the Erosion of the State

…removing judges like casual daily employees threatens the well-being of the State…

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

When President Edgar Chagwa Lungu signed into law a popularly adopted Constitution, there was both jubilation and fears expressed.

The celebrations related to the extensive amendments that included progressive articles such as; the provision of the date of general elections, the grade 12 qualification requirements for lawmakers, protection of former presidents from politically engineered prosecution, the provision of dual citizenship, removal of a by-election in the event the President dies, creation of the Constitutional Court and Appeals Court and the provision of 50+1 majority vote for the election of a Republican President.

It was largely a good Constitution.

However the devil hid in the details.

For example the provisions removing security of tenure of judges by articles that simplified both the appointment and the removal of Judges would haunt the country forever and threaten the well-being of the State if not corrected.

As the last bastion of Truth and Justice, an independent Judiciary usually prevents the collapse of the State or the reign of anarchy.

These recent provisions however have significantly eroded the independence and autonomy of a thriving Judiciary.

Without security of tenure, the judiciary is in essence dead and the the threat of the healthy standing of the State is compromised.

Recognising the weaknesses in the Constitution, the Patriotic Front Government attempted to rectify these anomolous clauses by proposing amendments to the Constitution through Bill 10.

But Bill 10 was a poisoned chalice as its timing was poor and stakeholders stood at highly polarized positions especially in light of the forthcoming 2021 elections which presented sufficient suspicions of the true intentions of President Lungu to amend the Constitution.

It was feared that President Lungu may tailor the Constitution in his own image and that of the Patriotic Front.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TAKES ADVANTAGE OF WEAKNESSES IN THE LAW

Since he assumed office, President Hakainde Hichilema has been quick to take advantage of bad laws to entrench himself and has used archaic or bad instruments that were roundly condemned in the past to get a tight and autocratic grip on power.

For example, President Hichilema does need the Criminal Defamation of the President as more oppressive laws exist in the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act of 2021 and the ordinary Criminal Defamatiom Act, that goes to stifle freedom of expression and punishes offenders better than the Criminal Defamation of the President law would ever do.

Even before the outlaw of the Criminal Defamation of the President, Hichilema’s government arrested more people that insulted him under this law than any previous President had ever done.

Similarly, President Hichilema has been quick to allow and perpetrate the abuse of Law Enforcement Agencies, and has taken away their independence and has tailored them as a sharpened tool to oppress the Opposition and his political opponents.

THE DEATH OF THE JUDICIARY, THE REIGN OF ANARCHY AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE STATE

The judiciary plays a fundamental role in society to uphold social order and the Rule of Law. Its primary function, in fact, is to resolve conflicts which in turn promotes co-existence and peace in society.

For the Judicary to play this fundamental role, it must enjoy judicial independence.

Judicial independence is therefore crucial as a fundamental value of the Rule of Law and of upholding Constitutionalism.

Recently two activists petitioned the Constitutional Court challenging President Hichilema’s appointment of 20 judges.

Mr. Isaac Mwanza and Mr. Maurice Makalu have contended that President Hichilema did not bother to follow the Constitution or norms of transparency, merit, or offer equal opportunity to other qualified persons and failed to consider constitutionally prescribed qualifications in making the appointments of the 20 judges.

REMOVAL OF JUDGES

However it’s the quick removal of Judges that has sent cold chill in stakeholders’ spines.

It has been realized that the removal of the judges can be done through a sham hearing by the Judicial Complaints Commission.

In two years and so far, Judge Sunday Nkonde, Judge Joshua Banda, Judge Kopa Muma and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Lillian Shawa-Siyuni have been removed like one would in the dismissal of casual daily employees!

Hichilema has fully exploited the weaknesses in the Constitution.

In the past, removal of the Judge or DPP required a full hearing through a judicial tribunal held in public.

Not so with this new Constitution and this President.

Further, Hichilema’s determined quest to control the Judiciary with a tight fist has been enforced and exposed with the appointment of all office-holders from that come from one region of the country.

President Hichilema has appointed the following to head the judiciary and its structures; Justice Minister (Mulambe Haimbe), Chief Justice(Dr. Mumba Malila), President of the Constitutional Court( Hon. Justice Prof. Margaret Munalula ) and Deputy President (Arnold Shilimi), President of the Court of Appeals (Mwiinde Siavwapa), Attorney General ( Mulilo Kabesha SC), Solicitor General (Marshall Muchende SC), Chairman of Judicial Complaints Commission ( Vincent Malambo SC), and Judicial Service Commission ( Mwikisa Louis Mukande).

CONCLUSION

The removal, dismissal or retirement of professionals from the public service and from state-owned enterprise has been justified by the New Dawn Government on false claims or mere suspicions that those removed were or belonged to the Patriotic Front.

Infact the exercise has been nothing but a systematic purge.

The removal of, Judge Sunday Nkonde, Judge Joshua Banda, Judge Kopa Muma and Lillian Shawa-Siyuni as DPP, has sent a clear message that any member of the public service including the Judiciary will be removed without much-ado.

Stakeholders must recognise that we need to restore constitutional protection of judges by reinstating provisions that require stringent but fair mechanisms for both their appointments or removal.

Failure to do so, has far reaching consequences as the judiciary holds the State together and a weak judiciary eventually promotes anarchy, social disorder and fails to resolve conflicts and presents negative effects on the state of the economy and crime levels.

For those taking glee satisfaction in the removal of Judges, they are being shortsighted as withoit amendments to the Constitution, this can visit any current Judge now or in the future.

High Cost Of Living Saddens Catholic Priest Fr. Andrew Chewe Mukosa

HIGH COST OF LIVING SADDENS FR. MUKOSA

…as he urges the Head of State to improve the livelihood of Zambians by facilitating access to basic services

Lufwanyama, Saturday, July 1, 2023 ( Smart Eagles Correspondent )

Copperbelt-based Catholic Priest Fr. Andrew Chewe Mukosa has warned that President Hakainde Hichilema risks being the worst Republican President if he does not play his cards well.

Fr. Mukosa of St. Joseph Mission in Lufwanyama District believes Zambia is currently not on the right track regarding the living standards of people compounded by the high cost of living.

He emphasised that President Hichilema’s New Dawn Government needs to do more to improve the livelihood of majority Zambians by facilitating access to basic services such as health, good housing, food and jobs.

Fr. Mukosa stressed the need to uphold human dignity as propagated by the Catholic Church.

The cost of living for a family of five as measured by the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (BNNB) for the month of May 2023 in Lusaka stood at K9, 077.93 whilst the cheapest town, Kasama, clinched a basket worth K4, 800.96.

“I think looking at the way governance issues are moving in Zambia, I think we are not on the right track with the UPND Government. I think we need to do more. First of all, they have completely forgotten about human dignity. Human dignity is about providing basic needs such as health, water, sanitation, good housing for people and food. I think we need to do much more,” Fr. Mukosa said.

Fr. Mukosa further counseled the Government against disparaging divergent views.

“The other part with this government right now is that they are not listening to any criticism and sometimes they are reacting so badly to criticism. When the Catholic or the Catholic Priest starts talking about Government that is a red light, let us wake up and know people’s needs. People are suffering in Zambia today and if President HH doesn’t play his cards well I am sorry he is not going anywhere. He is going to be the worst President. So take my advice, we are not on the right track,” he said.

“Tell them to change because there are so many pointers that we need, we need human dignity, we need people to eat, and we need employment. We don’t need graphs or anything else. That was said already. We do not need anything else, we need people to eat, to have houses, people to have clothes, people to have water. So please pass my message to them,” Fr. Mukosa said.

IT IS GOOD THAT OPPOSITION MPS HAVE BEGUN TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEVELOPMENT BEING DONE USING CDF ALLOCATIONS

IT IS GOOD THAT OPPOSITION MPS HAVE BEGUN TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEVELOPMENT BEING DONE USING CDF ALLOCATIONS

By Stembridge Sikalundu

This is the way to go because what is improving the ways of life in Zambia must be acknowledged without partisan politics , it does not matter if OPPOSITION leaders do not support the govt of the day , if the political parties in opposition are there waiting that one day they have to form govt ,the objectives remain the Same because the interests are in the welfare of the people and what is best to do for the nation . The UPND is scoring and the best we can do is to support the leadership of the country as they endeavor to do more in trying to improve the state of the country .

Since 2021 there has been a lot of Shadow boxing in the country politically , most of the new policies in the new frame work were seen not to be unattainable , either because we did not know that this country had the capacity to support these benefits directly to the people of zambia , sadly we have always lived to understand that zambia is a poor country . what we knew was that it was not possible for any govt to pay for the final exam fees for all the final sitting students in schools and provide free education services .

We always knew that when people retire they were supposed to prepare their minds to wait and suffer for many years before they could get their pension dues , destitution after working for the country is now a thing of the past . These are matters which every reasonable person whether in politics or formerly in govt should acknowledge and say well done to the UPND govt , it does not matter if one does not want to applaud president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s name , we have seen many parliamentarians from the opposition withholding their good concious for not praising the new dawn govt for fear of being disciplined from their Political parties , but what is wrong to say the truth ? .

Whether in opposition parliamentarians are leaders in this country ,they belong to the legislative organ of the country , it is just prudent to acknowledge the effects of development created at constituency level through the increased CDF budgetory allocations by the UPND govt .

On the other side opposition MPS are telling the people of zambia that CDF is not president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S money , yes these are govt resources , so if they are in support of what govt is doing without mentioning the name of the president that is fine , however that is impossibly so because under the leadership of president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA such policies to increase CDF allocations from ZMK 1.6 million to ZMK 28.3 is unprecedented in the history of govts , even if people are still complaining of how these funds are being disbursed at council level , govt is equitably disbursing all these funds to the 156 constituencies at the same time .

Let’s consider that 40% of president HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S vision is In the CDF because when we see the apportions ,it is very clear , the poor majority zambians are catered for as direct beneficiaries . This is the development which has been extended to community levels because the people must make decisions at local levels . Let’s encourage many politicians in Zambia to change the culture of personal hate , developing a country requires everyone to be involved , even a complement adds value to these good causes , well come on board for those MP’S who are giving credit to what is changing the face of the country using CDF allocations . God bless mother Zambia .

Billionaire British tycoon Richard Branson flies to Harare on budget airline

HARARE – Billionaire airline boss and philanthropist Richard Branson on Friday made a surprise trip to Harare, flying to the Zimbabwean capital on budget airline Fastjet from Johannesburg.

The Virgin Group founder posed for pictures with Fastjet and airport staff at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

Reasons for the trip were not publicised.

The Brit has made several trips to Zimbabwe over the years, and once claimed that he had bungee-jumped in Victoria Falls.

He has, in the past, made several calls for investment in Zimbabwe. Virgin Unite, the philanthropic arm of Branson’s Virgin Group, in 2010 created Enterprise Zimbabwe, a nonprofit group connecting philanthropists and commercial investors with business and social development opportunities. Not much was heard of the outfit since.

“In life, people have got to take risks. If everybody waits on the sidelines it will be the people who suffer,” said Branson at the time after then President Robert Mugabe agreed to share power with opposition rival Morgan Tsvangirai.

“The present state of politics in Zimbabwe is by no means perfect, but it’s a great deal better. Zimbabwe, of all the African countries, it’s got the best chance of getting back … it just needs a bit of help being kick-started.”

Branson is also understood to be keen to invest in safari operations in southern Africa, which could be part of his agenda on his visit to Zimbabwe.

There was also speculation that Branson, whose trip coincided with the opening of the RGM International Airport’s new terminal building, could be on a mission to scout a new route for his Virgin Atlantic. Zimbabwe has no direct flights to the UK since Air Zimbabwe terminated the Harare-London service in 2012.

Forbes estimates the 72-year-old’s net worth to be about US$3 billion.

Mnangagwa fixes roads to polling stations in rural strongholds

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s government says it has launched a blitz to grade roads and grant easy access to polling stations by voters in Zanu PF’s stronghold rural areas ahead of high stakes elections due 23 August this year.

The programme was announced at a post-cabinet media briefing by Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa in Harare Tuesday.

“The nation is advised that the government launched a blitz maintenance of access roads to polling stations throughout the country in order to allow every eligible voter to access the nearest polling station and exercise their right as enshrined in the constitution.

“A total of 4,000 kilometres out of a targeted 6,145 kilometres have been attended to through grading, gravelling and pothole patching in all the eight rural provinces, while 290 kilometres out of a target of 1,086 kilometres were verge-cleared,” she said.

Mutsvangwa said a total of 18 kilometres out of a targeted 216 kilometres of drainage structures on bridges, pipe drifts and culverts were attended to and the works are still on-going.

“Zimbabwe continues to beef up its preparedness for the 23rd August 2023 harmonised elections,” said Mutsvangwa.

The grading of roads to permit easy access to polling booths within rural constituencies comes as incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa faces tough challenge to keep his job from main opponent Nelson Chamisa of CCC.

Mnangagwa is seen as less popular with the urban voting base which is directly affected by his government’s ruinous policies that have pushed the average citizen into poverty.

Wages within the public sector have shrunk to a ridiculous US$10 per month for the lowest paid worker who takes home ZWL$100,000 while both big corporates and the country’s informal sector where the majority of the urban populace ekes out a living have been battered by recent recurrent power cuts.

The Zimbabwe strongman is widely expected to leverage support from the rural vote which has been the backbone of his party’s past poll triumphs.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, about 12,000 polling stations will be set up to ensure all registered voters cast their ballots under the new delimitation boundaries.

About 6,5 million voters are registered to cast their ballots in this election.

Utilizing Strategic Arrests to “Strengthen” the Opposition: A Masterclass in Fair Play

By Dr. Mwelwa

Introduction:
The recent targeted arrests of top leaders within the Patriotic Front (PF) party are a shining example of fair play and sportsmanship in the political arena. Taking inspiration from the Bible teaching “Strike the Shepherd and the Sheep Will Scatter,” the ruling party is simply offering a helpful nudge to their opponents. In this satirical analysis, we explore how these arrests demonstrate a commitment to fairness, transparency, and nurturing a level playing field within the political landscape.

1. These arrests are a testament to Leadership’s Cohesion: By arresting prominent PF leaders, the ruling party is showcasing their dedication to unity and teamwork. After all, what better way to foster unity than by targeting influential figures and creating division within the opposition? It’s like a team-building exercise, but with handcuffs.

2. The arrests are a gesture of support: Targeting top leaders is an act of generosity, aimed at helping them discover their vulnerabilities and grow stronger. Nothing builds character like a little doubt and questioning of authority. After all, who needs trust in leadership when you can have a healthy dose of uncertainty?

3. These arrests are a sign of encouragement: By disrupting the opposition’s momentum, the ruling party is simply giving them a chance to regroup, reassess their strategies, and enjoy a well-deserved break from the hectic world of politics. It’s like a forced vacation, courtesy of the ruling party.

4. The arrests are an exercise in psychological enlightenment: Instilling fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability among opposition supporters is a valuable lesson in resilience and adaptability. Plus, it spices up the political landscape, making it even more thrilling than a telenovela. Who needs unity and loyalty when you can have a constant state of anxiety?

5. The arrests are a testament to the ruling party’s commitment to unbiased storytelling: By controlling the narrative through media and public messaging, the ruling party ensures that the opposition’s story is accurately portrayed as corrupt and dangerous. It’s like a modern-day fairy tale, with the ruling party as the knights in shining armor and the opposition as the wicked witches.

6. The arrests offer an exciting game of “Guess Who”: With top leaders disappearing or going into hiding, it adds an element of mystery and intrigue to the political landscape. Who will be next? It’s like playing a thrilling game of political hide-and-seek, but with much higher stakes.

7. A friendly reminder to potential defectors: Strategic arrests are a gentle way of reminding potential defectors that loyalty is the name of the game. By showing them the consequences faced by those who challenge the ruling party, it’s a friendly nudge to stay in line and embrace the beauty of conformity.

8. The arrests are a mark of humility from the ruling party: By weakening the opposition’s ability to organize, mobilize, and challenge their authority, the ruling party is simply showcasing their modesty and selflessness. After all, who needs competition when you can have undisputed dominance?

Conclusion:
The targeted arrests of top PF leaders are a shining example of fair play and camaraderie within the political landscape. With a commitment to unity, vulnerability, and narrative control, the ruling party is ensuring a level playing field where opposition is tamed and challenges are minimized. We can only hope that this noble strategy continues to shape the political landscape, ushering in an era of unparalleled mutual respect and cooperation. Long live the game of politics!

Former MPs, ministers to have lifetime diplomatic passports

Former MPs to have lifetime diplomatic passports

PETAUKE independent member of parliament, Emmanuel ‘Jay’ Banda has lobbied Parliament, through a private member’s motion, if all former State office holders can be given permanent diplomatic passports in recognition of their service they rendered to the nation.

Banda moved the motion on Wednesday.

His motion was built on the strength that Vice-Presidents, ministers and member of parliaments are only recognised after they leave office, during their death’s during State funerals.

“We only recognise them with State funerals. Why can’t we recognise and appreciate their contributions towards the development of the country while they are still alive as former State office bearers,” Banda debated

“Mr speaker, what I’m saying is that we can recognise these people through permanent diplomatic passports that will earn them respect wherever they’ll travel to.

“I am aware that law automatically strips away some privileges to former state office holders upon the expiry of their term or appointment. In view of this, their diplomatic passports should be surrendered for incarceration. This is according to section 13 of the passport act number 28 of 2016.”

Banda added that in the case of former State office holders, they are reduced to ordinary citizens as they begin to use ordinary passports.

The lawmaker Banda emphasised that respect and appreciation should be given to them as a way to appreciate their tremendous works and sacrifice they gave to the nation.

“These are people that left their homes and families to come here in Lusaka so that they can work and serve the people. They tirelessly did all this and sacrificed their lives so they could work for the people of Zambia. Giving them diplomatic passports will show that their works are appreciated and that will put respect on their name wherever they go. Respecting them should not end together with their term or appointment,” said Banda.

The motion passed after it was seconded by some members of parliament, including Nyimba independent member of parliament, Menyani Zulu and Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu.

Police acted professionally in the case of Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba, Rizwan Patel and Given Phiri- Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu

Police acted professionally – Police

THE Zambia Police Service acted professionally in all the cases they have been accused of police brutality, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has told Parliament.

On Wednesday, Law Association of Zambia president Lungisani Zulu issued a statement accusing the Zambia Police Service of subjecting opposition party figures to brutality.

Lungisan sighted the arrests of PF members, Emmanuel Mwamba, Rizwan Patel and former president Edgar Lungu’s political advisor Dr Chris Zumani Zimba as some of the cases involving police brutality.

Delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament this morning, Mwiimbu said he was proud that in all the cases cited by LAZ, Zambia Police Service acted professionally.

He explained that Under section 26 of the Criminal Proceedure Code Chapter 88 of the Laws of Zambia, then police officers are empowered to make arrests without a warrant in specific situations such as when a person commits an offense in the presence of a police officer or when an officer has reasonable ground to believe that an an offence.

Mwiimbu further told Parliament that the law empowered police officers to use any means necessary to arrest a person who had committed a crime but was resisting arrest.

The minster said the police did not require to issue out a call out or have a warrant to effect an arrest.

“Under section 6 of the criminal procedure code chapter 88 of the laws of Zambia, the police officers are empowered to make arrests without a warrant in specific situations,” Mwiimbu stated.

“For instance, when a person commits an offense in the presence of a police officer or when the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that an offense has been committed.”

He pointed out that according to section 18, subsection 2 of the criminal procedure code, if a person forcibly resists arrest or attempts to evade arrest, a police officer may use all means reasonably necessary to effect the arrest.

The minister said Mwamba assaulted a police officer who was trying to apprehend him, an offence for which he has since been arrested.

He also addressed the misconception surrounding police call-outs, stating, “A call-out is not a requirement by law for any police officer to effect an arrest.

Mwiimbu said a call-out was merely an administrative process and an acceptable practice by which members of the public are invited by the police to answer concerns raised against them.

Highlighting the improvements in police conduct, Minister Mwiimbu expressed, “People are now free to interact with law enforcement agencies, particularly the Zambia Police Service.

“We have an open-door policy, and members of the public are free to report any alleged crime without fear,” Mwiimbu said.

He expressed disappointment at individuals and institutions that oppose well-intended actions by law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that the government remains committed to promoting democracy, human rights, and upholding the rule of law.

Reflecting on the past, Minister Mwiimbu drew attention to the contrast in the treatment of the opposition, stating, “Unlike in the past, people, including both the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and the opposition, can now hold press briefings outside the police without being harassed. There is now rule of law under the government’s administration.”

Meanwhile, Mwiimbu said he was ready to condemn any police misconduct.

He stressed that if there police acted unprofessionally, it was the responsibility of the affected individual to report such matters to the police, the Human Rights Commission, the Police Complaints Commission or take the matter to court.

The minister made assurance once that is done appropriate action would be taken.

Mwiimbu further emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, stating, “We do not want to slide back into lawlessness where gun culture was the order of the day.”

CONSTITUENCIES FAILING TO MAKE GOOD USE OF CDF FOR DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE PUT TO TASK – MDC

PRESS STATEMENT

CONSTITUENCIES FAILING TO MAKE GOOD USE OF CDF FOR DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE PUT TO TASK – MDC

Lusaka – 29th June, 2023.

UPND Alliance partner, the Movement for Democratic Change MDC has wondered why some constituecies are failing to carry out developmental programs when government has made full allocation of the Constituency Development Fund CDF.

MDC Vice President in Charge of Politics Leonard Hikaumba has said reports that CDF resources are not utilized in some constituecies are saddening as this deprives the people of the desired development.

Mr Hikaumba said CDF resources are meant for the development of constituencies hence the need for priority projects to be funded by constituencies in order to promote development.

Mr Hikaumba said it can only be concluded that there are individuals in the underperforming constituencies who are trying to frustrate government effort to deliver development.

“We can only conclude that probably, there are some people in those areas who are trying to frustrate government efforts” Mr Hikaumba said.

He said in the recent past, the cry was the lack of adequate resources hence, with the increased CDF, projects should be executed without fail.

Mr Hikaumba has noted that government should therefore have no choice but to continue issueing directives to constituencies on specific projects to be undertaken if the trend of underperformance continues.

Mr Hikaumba has also called on residents in constituencies to demand from their representatives why CDF resources are not utilized in their areas.

Mr Hikaumba said the MDC expects that challenges such as lack of desks, insufficient infrastructure and poor feeder roads will be addressed using the CDF in order for people to appreciate the impact of the huge allocations.

“That is the only way government will be justifiable to increase these funds when we see projects being done. If it is seen that nothing is being done in the utilization of CDF, people in those areas should demand from their representatives why the funds are not utilized. Government directives on use of CDF come as a last resort when they see that nothing is being done” he said.

Mufulira ‘strong Man’ Reagan Kashinga Joins Socialist Party

MUFULIRA ‘STRONG MAN’ REAGAN KASHINGA JOINS SP

Mufulira, Friday, June 30, 2023 ( Smart Eagles)

OVER 50 National Democratic Congress (NDC) leaders from various layers of leadership in Mufulira, Wednesday, joined the Socialist Party (SP).

Leading the defectors, Mufulira strongman Reagan Kashinga, who was one of the principal architects of the UPND alliance in Mufulira declared Dr. Fred M’membe as a leader who represents hope for Zambia.

“We thought that by running away from the PF, Zambia would be better governed under the UPND. But today, we have a government that is far worse off. Mediocre governance, abuse of human rights and mindless corruption are the key features of the UPND government,” stated Kashinga.

He said a leadership that lacks moral uprightness and does not serve the needs of the masses should be detested.

“The UPND is a huge let down. Look at the mediocrity in the energy sector. Fuel shortages have become a constant feature of the UPND government while the cost of electricity is way too high for the great majority of our people. The cost if fuel is not favorable to a hustler like me, while the cost of connecting electricity to a house or shop is now a far-fetched dream for a commoner like me,” he lamented.

“At the expense of our sweat, tears and blood, the mining sector is Zambia awarded huge tax holidays. What a shame! Our support for Dr. Fred M’membe is not simply for political convenience but is support anchored on the conviction that he is a people’s leader. For a long time, the name ‘Fred M’membe’ has stood for the quest for justice, equity and peace. For the sake of the voiceless masses, Dr. M’membe has refused to be silenced by monstrous totalitarian regimes. The Zambian masses yearn for a leader who is incorruptible and whose leadership is not driven by an insatiable appetite for material goods. One who has no lust for power nor personal prestige nor is seeking personal glory from collective efforts and indeed Dr. M’membe fits this bill.”

Speaking on the same event, SP Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Martin Chikwanda thanked the defectors for making a progressive move to the Socialist Party.

He urged the opposition political party District and Constituency leadership to ensure a smooth integration of the new members into the party’s structures.

He advised that members should not be obsessed with position and status.

Chikwanda emphasized that positions were there but to ensure coherency and orderliness.

“We must intensify mobilization and recruitment of members into the party. Numbers are important and everyone can tell that 2026 is for the Socialist Party. Indisputably, SP is the fastest growing political party today.”

And in welcoming the defectors, SP Member of the Central Committee Faston Mwale, said the fact that various political movements and organizations were endorsing Dr. M’membe for Republican President in respect of the 2026 general elections signifies that the masses were now beginning to wake up to a reality that a time has now arrived to unite under the banner of socialism and wage a decisive struggle for genuine emancipation from capitalist subjugation.

“For far too long, we the struggling masses have been duped, deceived, humiliated and suffered de-humanization at the hands of puppet regimes. For far too long, we have been used as a ladder for the elite class to gain access to political and economic power after which the masses were ditched. It is now time for the masses themselves to rise and play a central role in shaping their own political destiny. Under Dr. M’membe, we have a chance for genuine liberation,” said Mr. Mwale.

He added that having failed to fulfill campaign promises and out of fear of losing the elections in 2026, the UPND has become one of the most brutal regimes on the continent.

“It is only by coming together and forge a formidable transformative force under the able leadership of Dr. M’membe that we can bring authoritarianism to a decisive end in 2026.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the same occasion, SP Copperbelt Vice Chairperson Gitipher Kalungu urged the women to rise to the occasion and lead a struggle for progressive change.

“Many of our youth today are involving themselves in anti-social vices because they were out of employment and not engaged in any productive activity. We need to find the necessary unity to put an end to poverty, corruption, unemployment and all that constitute the existing intolerable underdevelopment amidst national riches and blessings,” stated Ms Kalungu.

TANZANIA LIFTS BAN ON NIGHT TRAVEL FOR BUS SERVICES

TANZANIA LIFTS BAN ON NIGHT TRAVEL FOR BUS SERVICES

AS a result of improved infrastructure and suggestions from stakeholders, the government has lifted the ban on night travel by upcountry bus operators.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made the announcement on Wednesday while adjourning the 11th session of the 12th Parliament in Dodoma.

The announcement comes a month after the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) approved upcountry bus services beginning at 3 a.m.

“In light of the improvement in roads and communication countrywide, as well as the opinions of various stakeholders in the transport sector, including lawmakers, it appears that bus owners and drivers are willing to comply with road safety regulations

“The government has decided to rescind the ban on passenger buses travelling at night, imposed in the 1990s. The police force and other security agencies are also ready to strengthen patrols,” he said.

To implement the decision, Mr Majaliwa said the Ministry of Home Affairs would cooperate with the Ministry of Works and Transport, particularly in the transportation sector, to establish a procedure for bus owners and drivers who plan to transport passengers at night.

At the end of the 1990s, passenger buses were banned from travelling at night because of frequent incidents of bus hijacking, which resulted in passengers being looted and humiliated, high rate of bus accidents, which resulted in deaths and permanent disabilities, as well as property and road infrastructure damage.

Buses were being seized in places with poor roads and no communication service, according to Premier Majaliwa.

“The government’s varied actions have also considerably decreased or entirely eliminated the security and infrastructure problems that occurred throughout that time,” said the PM.

He said that nearly every region in the country now has improved communications and road infrastructure.

Major traffic accidents have decreased as a result of LATRA’s decision to start deploying the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), as well as police measures to combat and control crime, including patrolling highways and regional roads.

In May this year, LATRA announced that operators of upcountry buses wishing to commence trips at 3 a.m. should submit their applications to the regulator.

WE DIDN’T RUN AWAY, WE JUST FROZE ACCOUNTS- FUD

FUD betting platform says they have not swindled anyone instead just froze people’s money accounts.

According to a statement by one of the FUD advisor Jack, availed to Zambian Eye on 29th June 2023, says the platform has an agency team that used FUD platform to launder money.

Jack says in order to cooperate with the investigation of the relevant National Departments, all funds on the FUD platform have been frozen until the end of the investigation.

He says FUD platform is verified by the National Regulatory Authorities.

Jack says in order to reduce some losses for everyone, the platform hired a famous American lawyer.

The law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Sheng Xin law firm came to defend the rights of the platform to solve this incident.

And Jayden, an attorney with the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Advocacy Team says FUD is a financial investment platform, so it is regulated by international agencies (SEC). Because (SEC) is the regulator of the Capital Markets in Zambia. It was established through an Act of Parliament, the Securities Act no. 41 of 2016.

Jayden says during the period from February to June 2023, multiple agency teams on the FUD platform exploited loopholes in the corporate operating mechanism of the FUD platform to carry out money laundering activities.

The total number of accounts suspected of participating in money laundering exceeds 50k, and the total transaction amount reaches 5B+. It has seriously violated the laws of Zambia and the SEC’s regulations on the capital market, he said.

Money laundering and terrorist financing are worldwide phenomena. In Zambia, it is a criminal offense under Section 14 of the Suppression and Prevention of Money Laundering Act of 2001 and Section 21 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2007.

“Therefore, the international agency (SEC) and the FIC have frozen all funds of the FUD platform and corporate companies. And temporarily suspended all operations. Because the FIC is Zambia’s financial intelligence center, established in 2010 by an Act of Parliament to protect Zambia’s financial crimes and maintain the financial system, said Jayden.

He says in this case, the FUD platform hired our lawyer team to help FUD investors. According to the relevant laws of Zambia and the rules and regulations of the regulatory agency (SEC) on the capital market, under this circumstance, we can sue the SEC in the U.S. federal district court, and then carry out legal rights protection. Prove that the investor’s source of funds is clean. In this way, your funds frozen by international agencies (SEC) and FIC on the FUD platform will be unfrozen, and then returned to your account.

Jayden urges members to cooperate as the investigations are going on.

“Therefore, if you need the help of our lawyer team, you need to fully cooperate with our work, provide your account on the FUD platform, including your personal information, and screenshots of every transaction between FUD, we can help you start legal Rights protection work,” he said.

However, some of the victims from FUD scandal which has taken over social media in the past few days have reached out to Zambian Eye expressing their sad ending story with betting.

The victims who chose to be withheld their identify told Zambian Eye News that they joined the FUD betting group because of the dreams they had.

” We joined FUD because we needed to raise money to start our business, as young and energetic men we thought this could work for us but unfortunately FUD did (mulife don’t run and they run away),” said the victims.

” I had great plans with this money, I was thinking of starting a business or to build a house from this money even though what I put in was little but I believed could have multiplied by time,” said one of the victims.

In their lamentation, the young men remembered the words by President Hakainde Hichilema during one of his address that ‘youths work hard stop spending time with betting.’

Court jails Kalabo quirky ritualist for exhuming, chopping baby’s body

A 42-year-old ritualist from Kalabo Western Province, has been sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment with hard labor for his bizarre act of exhuming and chopping off the remains of a baby girl.

This eyebrow-raising case has left the town buzzing with disbelief when the culprit, Kanyanga Kalimbwe of Shambongi village in Lukona, shocked the courtroom when he confessed his guilt before the magistrate.

According to a report by ZANIS, Kalimbwe explained that the arms and legs of the deceased baby girl, who resided in Nalusheke village and tragically passed away at the tender age of three months last April, were essential for his cultural rituals.

“I admit the charge,” he declared, his voice tinged with an odd sense of conviction.

“It was around 21:00 hours when I committed the act. The remains were meant for cultural rituals which I perform.”

To everyone’s astonishment, Kalimbwe went on to confess that he had engaged in similar acts on multiple occasions.

Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, 22-year-old Malembu Simasiku, maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to the offense.

However, the court dismissed Kalimbwe’s application to exclude Simasiku from the proceedings, deeming it frivolous and lacking merit.

Presiding Magistrate Eric Mushitu delivered a stern ruling, highlighting the accused’s lack of legal justification for committing such a heinous act.

He condemned the actions as cruel and barbaric, exclaiming, “This is witchcraft! How can you have the bones of a baby? You must seek prayers and reform.”

According to the particulars of the offense, on May 6, 2023, the duo knowingly trespassed on the sacred Nalusheke burial site with intentions to wound the baby, a granddaughter of Kaunda Ngumbe, who had been laid to rest on April 9, 2023.

It was only discovered last month, on May 9, that the burial site had been unlawfully desecrated.

James Mushoke, the public prosecutor, revealed that upon inspection, it became apparent that certain body parts, including the baby’s hands and legs, were missing.

The perplexed community members noticed two distinct human footprints leading away from the graveyard which led them to Kalimbwe’s whereabouts.

“After tracking the footprints, we stumbled upon Kalimbwe, who was found in possession of the baby’s body parts,” explained Mushoke.

Subsequent to the discovery, a post-mortem examination confirmed the remains to be of human origin.

Zanu PF seeks nullification of 15 CCC candidates in Bulawayo by ZEC

The ruling Zanu-PF party has claimed that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) did not close at 4pm as stipulated by the law on the day the Nomination Court set and therefore “illegally” accepted papers from 15 opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidates in Bulawayo.

In a statement on Thursday, Zanu-PF Treasurer General who also doubles as Acting Secretary for Legal Affairs, Patrick Chinamasa threatened to take ZEC to court demanding that the 15 aspiring Members of Parliament be stopped from contesting.

Chinamasa cited part of the Electoral Act which stipulates that: “No nomination paper shall be received by the nomination officer in terms of Subsection (6) after four o’clock in the afternoon of nomination day or, where there is more than one nomination day for the election concerned, the last such nomination day.

“Provided that, if at that time a candidate or his or her chief election agent is present in the court and ready to submit a nomination paper in respect of the candidate the nomination officer shall give him or her an opportunity to do so.

“The nomination officer shall examine every nomination paper lodged with him or her which has not been previously examined by him or her in order to ascertain whether it is in order and shall give any candidate or his or her chief election agent an opportunity to rectify any defect not previously rectified and may adjourn the sitting of the court for that purpose from time to time:

“Provided that the sitting shall not be adjourned to any other day that is not a nomination day”.

The mentioned CCC candidates are:

1)). Kapoikulu Surrender (Bulawayo Central)

2). Gumede Minehle Ntandoyenkosi (Bulawayo North)

3). Watson Nicola Jane (Bulawayo South)

4). Sibanda Pashor Raphael (Cowdray Park)

5). Bajila Collins Discent (Emakhandeni/Luveve)

6). Tshuma Dingilizwe (Entumbane/Njube)

7). Dube Prince (Entumbane/Njube)

8). Gono Dereck (Lobengula/Magwegwe)

9). Makaza Desmond (Mpopoma/Mzilikazi)

10). Manduna Obert (Nketa)

11). Moyo Desire (Nkulumane)

12). Moyo Soneni (Pelandaba/Tshabalala)

13). Siziba Gift (Pelandaba/Tshabalala)

14). Mahlangu Sichelesile (Pumula)

15). Mhlanga Albert (Pumula)

Zanu-PF believes that the CCC failed to file nomination papers in time due to the party’s lack of structures and constitution.

Accordingly, Zanu-PF said it has been directed to institute litigation “urgently” for the nullification of the 15 CCC candidates.

“In short the CCC candidates referred to above were not in court with signed nomination papers and nomination fee by the time the Nomination Court closed at 4pm on 21 June 2023.

“As the above will show, the Nomination Court sat on 22 June 2023 again in contravention of section 46 (7) and (8) of the Electoral Act,” read the statement.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission had no legal right to accept the nominations referred to from candidates who were not within the court by 4pm on 21 June 2023.

“Further the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission had no legal right to sit as a Nomination Court on 22 June 2023 to receive and accept nomination papers from CCC candidates referred to above, payment from a CCC Official who was said to be still in Harare as at 4pm on 21 June 2023.

“The law is “a ass” and must be obeyed and complied with.

“Accordingly ZANU PF has directed that litigation be instituted urgently for the nullification of the nomination of the CCC candidates mentioned above and whose papers were submitted out of time in contravention of Section 46 (7) and (8) of the Electoral Act( Chapter 2:13).”

Commenting on the issue, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s lawyer Thabani Mpofu said;

“According to this Press Statement, Zanu-PF intends to pursue the litigation route against the duly nominated CCC candidates. The fact that Zanu-PF intends to ask a court of law to disqualify CCC candidates is significant. Take note of the chosen route.”

Former cabinet Minister and senior CCC member David Coltart said the mentioned aspiring MPs’ nomination papers were submitted before 4pm.

“Patrick Chinamasa is grandstanding on a massive scale by suggesting that CCC MP and Senatorial candidates were not validly nominated in Bulawayo. They were all present and their nomination papers were submitted before 4pm. His statement is ridiculous,” he said.

Zanu PF Blocks Kasukuwere

Zanu PF, represented by Lovedale Mangwana, an activist has threatened to approach the courts seeking to bar Saviour Kasukuwere from contesting the presidential election.

Mangwana claims that Kasukuwere is not a registered voter and is therefore in violation of the constitution.

Lovedale Mangwana plans to submit an application that cites Saviour Kasukuwere and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) as respondents. Mangwana claims that Kasukuwere’s nomination for the presidential election is invalid because he is not a registered voter. Mangwana quotes the Electoral Act which states that if a voter has not lived in a constituency for a continuous period of 18 months, their name cannot be retained on the voters’ roll for that constituency. He said:

I submit that the decision to accept the first respondent’s nomination paper is in breach of section 91(1)(d) of the Constitution and invalid.

I was convinced that this circumstance meant that he is no longer a registered voter for any constituency in the republic and consequently, he does not qualify for candidacy for election to the office of President.

Saviour Kasukuwere has been in self-imposed exile in South Africa since 2017. He skipped the country when the late former President, Robert Mugabe, was ousted from power.

He registered to contest in the presidential election as an independent presidential candidate. Kasukuwere’s spokesperson and chief election agent, Jacqueline Sande, has confirmed that the legal team is preparing a response and will fight the case in court. Sande has expressed confidence that Kasukuwere will succeed in his bid to contest the presidential election, stating that there is no sustainable case to prevent him from running. Sande told NewsDay:

The legal team is seized with the matter. They have seen the draft application which has not yet been issued and served, to us. We have prepared a response and once we are formally served, we shall fight it in the courts. We are confident that we will succeed.

We believe that there is no sustainable case which can prevent Kasukuwere from contesting for the highest post in the land. Come August 23, he will emerge as the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

That being said, nothing will deter Kasukuwere from running as presidential candidate come August 23.

I would like to urge all Zimbabweans to rally behind him and bring change to our country. This is what democracy is all about. Where one leader has failed, s/he has to give the baton to someone else to develop or stir the ship.

Kasukuwere, a former Minister of Local Government, is one of 10 presidential candidates who will be competing against President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the upcoming election.

FORMER NKANA CONGOLESE FOOTBALLER IDRIS MBOMBO CONVICTED FOR GIVING FALSE INFORMATION AND OBSTRUCTION

… he was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K5,000 or, in default, six months simple imprisonment

Lusaka… Friday June 30, 2023

The former Nkana player was apprehended on 27th May 2023 during a routine operation conducted in Ndola’s Mitengo Residential Area.

During the operation, Mr. Mbombo refused to identify himself to the Officers, claiming that he did not know where his passport was.

Instead, he exhibited very violent behaviour leaving the Officers no choice but to take him into police custody.

While at Kansenshi Police Station, he produced his Congolese passport, which had been in his possession all along.

He appeared before the Ndola Magistrate Court on 29th June 2023, where he was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K6,000 or, in default, six months simple imprisonment for both counts.

Similarly, the Ndola Regional Immigration Office, on 29th June 2023, secured the conviction of a 27-year-old Chinese national, Ming Yin, for failure to comply with conditions stipulated in his Employment Permit contrary to section 28(4)(a) as read with section 56(1) of the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia. On 16th June 2023, Ming Yin was found working at Great Wall Financial Services along Kandabwe Road instead of New Future Financial Company Limited stipulated in his Employment Permit.

He appeared before the Ndola Magistrate Court on 29th June 2023, where he was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K 5,000 or, in default, six months simple imprisonment. On the same day, the Ndola Regional Immigration Office secured the conviction of a 52-year-old Turkish national, Tuncay Toplu, for unlawful stay and engaging in employment at Deniz Blocks without a permit.

Meanwhile, Great Wall Financial Services and Deniz Blocks were charged for employing foreign nationals whose status does not authorize them to be employed contrary to section 43(1)(b) of the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.

Company representatives from the two companies are scheduled to appear in Court on 30th June, 2023.

Further, the Ndola Regional Immigration Office, on 29th June 2023, also secured the conviction of a 57-year-old Indian, Devender Kumar, for failure to comply with the conditions stipulated in his Residence Permit.

He was apprehended on 27th June 2023, when he was found working at Zameye Wholesale Cash and Carry instead of Sree PLC Zambian stipulated in his Residence Permit.

He was sentenced to pay a fine of K 3,000 or, in default, three months simple imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the three Chinese nationals Pan Peng (43), Liu Gang (36), Jia Yuqi (29), and South Korean Han Ho Bae (62), indicted in the case of suspected trafficking of five Vietnamese for sexual exploitation, appeared before Court on 30th June 2023 for mention. They remain detained.

The Department wishes to urge members of the public to cooperate with Immigration Officers in the execution of their duties.

We also want to advise holders of various Immigration Permits to observe conditions stipulated in the permits to avoid prosecution or having their permits revoked.

Caroline Wozniacki announces her return to professional tennis three years after retiring to start a family

0

Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has announced she is returning to tennis, three years after announcing her retirement.

The 32-year-old is now targeting the Canadian Open in Montreal in August as her official comeback before returning to the Grand Slam stage at the US Open.

The mother-of-two revealed she began hitting again following the birth of her second child last October and felt she was playing better than she ever had.

Wozniacki, announced her decision to return to the tour in the latest edition of Vogue, shared a link to the article on social media, writing: ‘Over these past three years away from the game I got to make up for lost time with my family, I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for.

‘But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family it’s time. I’m coming back to play and I can’t wait!’

Wozniacki called time on her career after her greatest triumph, at the Australian Open where she won her only Grand Slam in 2018, in order to start a family with husband and former NBA player David Lee.

In an Instagram shared in December 2019, a month before her retirement, Wozniacki wrote: ‘I’ve always told myself, when the time comes, that there are things away from tennis that I want to.

‘In recent months, I’ve realized that there is a lot more in life that I’d like to accomplish off the court.

‘Getting married to David was one of those goals and starting a family with him while continuing to travel the world and helping raise awareness about rheumatoid arthritis (project upcoming) are all passions of mine moving forward.

‘So with that, today I am announcing that I will be retiring from professional tennis after the Australian Open in January.’

She revealed she hadn’t hit a tennis ball until after the birth of her second child, James, last year but once she did, she found herself enjoying it.

‘It’s hard to say why, or what changed, but when my dad saw me practice that day, and said, “It looks like you’re enjoying it more”—that was exactly how I felt: I was relaxed and having fun, and somehow that let me see everything more clearly,’ she said in her Vogue essay.

She added: ‘How long will I be able to play at my highest level—a year, two years, three years? I don’t know. But I know that five years from now, when the kids are in school, it will be too late.

‘I’m not going to make any bold predictions—but if I didn’t believe in myself, I wouldn’t be doing this: I’m too competitive to just show up and not feel like I’m going to be one of the best players out there.’

Wozniacki said she’ll take a couple of months to prepare for the Australian Open in January with the Paris Olympics also on the horizon next summer and then she’ll ‘take it from there.’

‘Am I nervous? Not really,’ she said. ‘I’m coming back to something I love. Yes, I’ll be nervous before a match; I’m okay with that. I’m great with that.

‘Can I win the US Open? I think so. Can I win the Australian Open? I think so. That’s why I’m doing this. And I guess we’ll see what happens.’

Wozniacki, who had been engaged to professional golfer Rory McIlroy before they split in 2014, married Lee in June 2019. The couple welcomed two children – a daughter named Olivia in June 2021 and a son named James in October 2022.

She will join the growing list of mothers on the WTA Tour, including Victoria Azarenka, Elina Svitolina and Taylor Townsend, while expecting mothers and fellow former world No. 1s Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka are also expected to join the group once they return from maternity leave next year.

HELP HH TO DELIVER, LUSAMBO URGES ZAMBIANS

…as he apologizes for the language previously used against the UPND leader

LUSAKA, Friday, June 30, 2023 ( Smart Eagles)

WE need to work together to uplift the living standards of our people, former Kabushi Lawmaker Hon. Bowman Chilosha Lusambo has said.

Hon Lusambo said the economy is not doing well hence the need to stop politicking but work towards finding solutions.

He said that is why he commends the Head of State and his Government on the deal to restructure Zambia’s debt.

Hon Lusambo was speaking when he featured on 5FM’s burning issue radio Programme in Lusaka yesterday.

He said the challenges being faced are beyond the UPND Government.

He said this requires all stakeholders to put their hands together and work towards a common goal.

“Some of us are grassroots politician and we are facing reality. People do not have food. We need accountants, engineers to come together to rescue Zambia. Let us put politics aside, we will start politics towards 2026. We need to help Mr Hakainde Hichilema because he has never been in Government. What he is doing is by guess work or being advised by people who do not mean well,” he said.

And Hon Lusambo said President Hichilema is being made unpopular by the people he described as ‘ba Kandile’.

He said the President must be helped by those who have been in Government before.

“If I go to the President and tell him that were we have reached things are not okay, balya ba Kandile they won’t be happy, they will come and say Bowman is PF. Who was born a UPND or PF? We are all Zambians. ECL was once UPND, PF Vice President Hon Given Lubinda was once UPND. Ba Kandile ebalalufya ba President Hakainde Hichilema.

“The President is new in this game, he has never been Councillor, MP or Mayor, he needed people with experience to advise him. Those ba Nevers Mumbas and others are supposed to tell the President the truth. Not these things you are seeing. We are seeing arrests. Some of these arrests are unnecessary. If there is someone who can tell the President the effect of Certain actions, things can run smoothly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the former Kabushi lawmaker apologized to President Hichilema for the language previously used against him.

Hon Lusambo said he was rude towards the President when he referred to Community House as a ‘Chicken run’ because he was annoyed and frustrated.

“I was rude and annoyed at the same time because I have been persecuted several times without doing nothing okay, so, let me take this opportunity to apologize once more. I wrote a letter to President Hakainde Hichilema and in that Letter, I explained a lot of things and I told him, Sir, you need to open up a new page. And that Letter is sitting at State House right now because I wrote that Letter 6 or 7 months ago.

“And I just want to say President Hakainde Hichilema, I was annoyed and frustrated with all these things, that’s why I had to say what I said and I am sorry to him and to the people of Zambia because that was not politics, that was person assassination so for me, that is not what I believe in. I believe in civil politics were we discuss real issues so on that score, I want to say sorry for using those Words.”

“The Political Apology Chronicles: A Tale of Shifting Alliances”

Dr. Mwelwa’s Reflections

Title: “The Political Apology Chronicles: A Tale of Shifting Alliances”

In a stunning twist of events on that fateful day, Thursday, June 29th, 2023, the nation bore witness to an extraordinary display of apologies from two prominent politicians. Malembe Malembe, previously known as a diehard PF cadre, and the infamous Bowman Lusambo, renowned for his knack for insulting community houses, took center stage to express remorse for their past actions. The air was thick with anticipation as we delved into the theatrical world of political apologies.

Malembe Malembe, with tears streaming down his cheeks, wept inconsolably as he confessed to his allegiance to the PF party. Who would have thought that a cadre could shed tears? It was an emotional rollercoaster for all involved, as the nation collectively pondered the implications of such a revelation. Was it a genuine epiphany or a cleverly calculated move to maintain political relevance in the ever-changing tides of Zambian politics?

Meanwhile, the enigmatic Bowman Lusambo, known for his uncanny ability to despise or insult community houses, decided to join the apology parade, leaving the crowd baffled. His sudden reflection on his past actions left many scratching their heads, searching for hidden motives behind this unexpected act. Was it a genuine change of heart or a chess move on the political chessboard?

As political analysts tried to make sense of these apologies, they couldn’t help but notice the intricate web of alliances and shifting loyalties behind the scenes. Lusambo, once a devout MMD diehard, miraculously found himself in the inner circles of the Patriotic Front. The nation collectively pondered: How did he abandon his diehard dreams to find solace in the arms of the PF? Was he truly sensing danger for the ruling party’s political future, or was this calculated manoeuvering in preparation for a potential partnership with the ruling UPND?

Speculation ran rampant throughout the land. Could Lusambo be contemplating a surprising leap into the arms of the UPND government? Would he be the bridge between two political behemoths, a mastermind playing both sides for his personal gain? Only time will reveal the true intentions of this political chameleon.

With the scent of a potential political upheaval in the air, the nation remains on the edge of their seats. How long will Lusambo continue singing the PF songs, or will he soon find a new vehicle to ride into the hallowed halls of Parliament? Will Malembe Malembe’s tears become nothing more than a momentary spectacle, fading into the abyss of political melodrama?

In this never-ending saga of apologies and political somersaults, where alliances are forged and discarded like yesterday’s news, the Zambian political landscape remains as unpredictable and tempestuous as ever. So, dear readers, fasten your seatbelts and brace yourselves for the next spectacular act in this thrilling theater of politics. Only time will reveal the true meaning of these apologies and the fate of those who seek to remain relevant in the ever-shifting dance of power.

The Pain of Police Brutality

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

On 14th June 2023, a group of about twelve men accosted me at a car wash in Woodlands around 15;30hrs.

They demanded I accompany them. They showed me no Identities, or Warrant and their 3 cars were not marked as Police Vehicles.

When I demanded that they allow me to phone my wife or my lawyer, they prevented me from doing so and proceeded to brutalize me in full view of members of the public.

I sustained injuries on my right thumb, Wrist, both shoulders, a painful neck and I sadly lost a tooth.

Two weeks later, I am still nursing some of the wounds.

Those that have met me will confirm that I am unable to shake their hands with my right hand.

I have since reported the matter to;

  1. Woodlands Police Station for the Station to process the complaint of aggravated assault.
  2. The Police-Public Complaints Commission.
  3. The Human Rights Commission.

I also submitted medical records signed by doctors from the University Teaching Hospital and attached pictures of the injuries.

Rizwan Patel of Petauke and Given Phiri suffered far worse injuries than me at the hands of the Police.

I feel sad when I see those mocking us or blaming the victims or justifying the barbaric, criminal and inhuman behavior of the Police against citizens.

It is therefore heartening to finally hear stakeholders such as the Law Association of Zambia(LAZ) and others condemn these illegal actions and police brutality by the police.

The crime of torture and dehumanizing treatment of persons is a serious offence that is outlawed, not only by our Constitution but also by the United Nations, and the crimes are prosecutable not just in Zambia, but also at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague.

HOW PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA MESMERISED THE WORLD WITH FACTS

By David Zulu.

HOW PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA MESMERISED THE WORLD WITH FACTS.

29th June 2023.

It was evident who the main attraction was at the ‘Summit for the New Global Financing Pact’. The attention he received and the whispers from journalists and fellow participants spoke volumes. Many leaders chose to refer to him by his initials, HH, apparently as a sign of personal attachment.

A few months earlier, President Hichilema had published an Op-ed in the New York Times, where he called out the major powers for disregarding poverty and the debt burden on poor countries, warning that “you can’t eat democracy.”

Later, he emphasized that “debt was like a python around our necks.”

These two statements resonated worldwide and sent a powerful signal about the urgency of addressing the debt issue. It was clear that President Hakainde wasn’t just “the new kid on the block,” but a global leader who had emerged to tackle economic inequalities with major powers on an equal footing, rather than as a subservient partner. The world was paying attention to this President.

As President Hakainde Hichilema’s official vehicle stopped near the steps of Élysée Palace, President Macron warmly embraced him and proclaimed the now famous words, “HH, we have done it!” The French President was referring to the debt restructuring deal that had been concluded between creditor nations and Zambia, with France co-chairing alongside China.

As I sat in the hotel lobby, adorned with a lapel pin in the colors of the Zambian flag, a young man who identified himself as Romanian noticed and approached me. His eyes gleamed with admiration as he spoke earnestly.

“Excuse me, sir,” he began, his voice filled with genuine respect. “If you happen to have the opportunity to convey a message to your President, please let him know that he is undeniably the epitome of cool among African leaders. He is a beacon of hope not only for Africa but for the entire world.”

Moved by his words, the young man clasped his hands together in prayer and cast his gaze towards the heavens, murmuring softly, “May the Lord protect and guide him always.”

The encounter left me speechless. It was evident that the world was well aware of the remarkable qualities and accomplishments of President Hakainde Hichilema, that some individuals within our own nation were choosing to overlook or dismiss. This was a prophetic message delivered by a total stranger.

The following day, the President delivered a powerful unscripted statement at the ‘Summit for the New Global Financing Pact’, which garnered waves of admiration around the world. I saw a few people sniff back tears.

“The President of Zambia went to France to discuss pressing issues affecting his country, secured a debt restructuring deal, and earned the respect of world leaders,” wrote ‘Robinax’ on his Twitter page, while ‘Relavabest’ tweeted, “If your country doesn’t have a President who can address the global community with such boldness and clarity of thought, then you have a problem. Well done, Bally!”

‘Sports Dokita’ tweeted, “Just look at how everyone is quiet, paying undivided attention to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema as he drops the facts and the truth!” while ‘SALAKO’ wrote, “Every Zambian must be proud to listen to their leader speak like this: presidential poise, articulation, control of the audience, confident demeanor, an unrestricted display of self-esteem, and clarity of speech. This dude is something!”

And back home, it was evident that President Hichilema had dealt a telling blow to his critics. There was remarkable silence for 48 hours, and when the critics did speak up, it was nothing more than empty noise.

HICHILEMA, RUTO IN PARIS: WHO MADE MORE SENSE?- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA, RUTO IN PARIS: WHO MADE MORE SENSE?

This week, a video of Kenyan President William Ruto speaking at the just ended meeting in Paris went viral across Africa.

In Zambia, in addition to that video, the government communicators also circulated a second video of Mr Hakainde Hichilema speaking at the same meeting, obviously believing that Mr Hichilema said something impressive. This allowed us to compare what the two leaders said, but we will only point out one key difference between them for now.

While Mr Hichilema impressed Western leaders like Emmanuel Macron and others by urging “speedy” implementation of agreements and plans WITHIN the existing financial and political-economic architectures/frameworks and arrangements dominated and controlled by the West, President Ruto questioned these very structures and the power relations under which they operate, and how they favour the West and consign and confine Africa and the Global South to perpetual poverty, underdevelopment, and subjugation to the West.

As Ruto rightly illustrates, there can be no meaningful global development and redressing of the existing global inequalities without dismantling these structures. No amount of debt restructuring or even cancellation can address this.

In a nutshell, therefore, Mr Hichilema impressed the West as usual, but President Ruto and others, like South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, held their own weight and spoke truth to the West in ways Africa’s leaders should.

By circulating Mr Hichilema’s speech pandering to the West, the UPND have managed to mislead some of their supporters and a few uncritical minds. But the more alert of our people know the importance of understanding what Mr Hichilema and other African leaders said in Paris within the right political-economic context in which Africa continues to suffer from historical and ongoing injustices and inequalities.

Only a leadership that refuses to accept the current Western-designed global order will begin to lift Africa out of these unequal relations; the poverty and underdevelopment they perpetuate. What Mr Hichilema is saying to impress the West has been said before by many leaders before him who, like him, saw the West as saviours and superiors, but this only tightens the chains that Africa should be breaking free from.

So, when supporters were mobilised to welcome and cheer Mr Hichilema as he returned from Paris, the UPND and its leadership must realise that development has never been delivered by any such theatrics and sycophantic behaviour.

M – Nation 💣
Today I feel like sharing.
The year was 2017/ 2018. I was battling depression. Drinking a lot and doing a whole lot of stuff. My relationship with an ex fiancé had just failed after he accidentally phoned me while having sex with another girl. We had too many issues- Trust issues too. The union failed before it even begun. I had lost weight. I was socially awkward but I had to show face and act like I was okay. I felt ashamed. I felt like a loser, a failure but I always sounded very happy on radio meanwhile, I used to cry ALOT behind the scenes. I remember breaking down on air one day at Hot Fm and Flava ( Kenny Musonda ) hugged me and dried my eyes. I cried so much I actually hated my life. But when the mic went on, I put on a good show. Nobody knew this. Nobody could tell except a few close people.

My life was horrible I just wanted to die but I did my job with so much glee like my life depended on it. I got another gig at Diamond TV to keep myself busy, I worked on the Mutale Mwanza Show with Costa. After all, it was the only thing that kept me sane – work!!!

While at Hot fm, Talking to little children during the Dlite show during the red hot breakfast used to cheer me up because I love kids. To this day, I don’t even know if I can have any- That aside.
I was constantly bullied on social media. Slandered and ridiculed. But I kept it moving.
I honestly don’t know how I got to where I am. My depression was wrapped up in so much laughter and joy & I think that’s the sad part about life. We all pretend ( sometimes)
We are all hiding something. We are all just TRYING. 😞

Court hands abductors 650 years in prison each for the 13 charges of rape

0

Court Sentences Abductors to 650 Years in Prison Each for an Unprecedented Crime Spree

In a case that sounds like it was plucked straight out of a Hollywood script, Lusaka High Court Judge Charles Kafunda has handed down an astonishing sentence to abductors James Bwalya and Mathews Sikaonga. Brace yourselves, folks, because these criminals will be spending the next 650 years locked up with hard labour. It seems the judge wanted to make sure they had enough time to thoroughly reflect on their actions.

The audacious duo, known for their penchant for abducting and sexually abusing young women, were finally brought to justice for their heinous crimes. In a legal spectacle that left jaws on the floor, the court tallied up an astounding 13 charges against the two perpetrators. It seems they were trying to break some sort of record, though it’s unclear if they were going for the “Most Time Spent Behind Bars” award or simply vying for a spot in the “Worst Criminals in History” hall of fame.

Even legal experts are scratching their heads at this unprecedented sentence. Some argue that it sends a strong message that such despicable acts will not be tolerated, while others question whether the punishment is a tad excessive. After all, 650 years is enough time to watch the entire history of cinema unfold, including countless courtroom dramas that would put their own case to shame.

As the legal system grapples with the fallout of this astounding ruling, one can’t help but wonder what the future holds for Bwalya and Sikaonga. Will they spend the next several lifetimes contemplating their actions and contemplating the meaning of life behind bars and a hard labour routine? Or perhaps they’ll attempt an ambitious prison break, chaining themselves to a library to study law in the hopes of eventually fighting their own case? The possibilities are truly endless.

One thing’s for certain: this case will go down in history as one of the most mind-boggling examples of criminal punishment. Let’s hope it serves as a stark warning to any potential wrongdoers out there, reminding them that the consequences of their actions may surpass their wildest imagination. And who knows, maybe Bwalya and Sikaonga will use their newfound free time to write bestselling prison memoirs or start a lucrative podcast series from behind bars. After all, when life gives you 650 years, why not make the most of it?

UPND hits back at Davies Chama’s ‘foolish’ statement on debt restructuring

UPND hits back at Chama’s ‘foolish’ statement on debt restructuring

THE UPND media team has responded to PF national chairman, Davies Chama’s assertion that it is foolish for the UPND government to celebrate the debt restructuring deal because the country will still be required to repay it at a later stage.

In a statement, UPND deputy media director, Cheelo Katambo stated that the reasoning of Chama, a former Minister of Defence under Edgar Lungu’s reign, is that of someone who is choking witb envy, due to the UPND government’s scores.

“We understand Davies Chama and his friends in the Patriotic Front are choking with envy that Zambia is today regarded as an example of prudence both locally and abroad. Was Davies and his friends against debt restructuring? The answer is NO. Actually, they wanted this debt restructured so much that they had to pay a French company Lazard a whooping $5 million to help them restructure,” Katambo stated.

“Did they manage to do so? No, they didn’t. They did not have the capacity to convince the international community that they mean well. Nobody wanted to play ball with them because of their level of crookedness, which had become so known across the world.”

He stated that the UPND finds Chama’s statement very unreasonable, especially that it came from a man whose political party moved the country’s foreign debt mountain from $1.9 billion in 2011 to more than $13 billion in 2021.

According to Katambo, the barbaric behaviour being exhibited by some PF members is only because the UPND has provided too much freedom of speech, to an extent that they have lost all their senses of shame, and think that Zambians are gullible to allow them to be their spokespersons.

He added that Chama has no right to mock the UPND government and the Zambians over the successfully restructured debt, because the PF wanted it as much but could not manage to do so because the lenders saw no seriousness in them.

“In Mr Chama’s wisdom, it is foolish for the UPND to celebrate the debt restructuring of almost half the foreign debt owed using home-grown solutions and negotiations but wise to borrow recklessly. We remember how the PF celebrated and asked the nation to join in celebrating the first $750 million Eurobond, whose proceeds ended in their own pockets,” stated Katambo.

Katambo further stated that from the background of Zambia’s debt, Chama had no right at all to gather Dutch courage, and ill-talk the debt restructuring deal in the media.

Tanzanian Billionaire Rustam Aziz Unveils $100-million Deal For Zambia’s First LPG Facility

TANZANIAN BILLIONAIRE RUSTAM AZIZ UNVEILS $100-MILLION DEAL FOR ZAMBIA’S FIRST LPG FACILITY

Taifa Gas, the liquefied petroleum gas supply company owned by Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz, has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking $100-million investment in power generation in Zambia.

The strategic move aims to bolster Taifa Gas’s presence in Southern Africa while fostering stronger trade and business ties between Tanzania and Zambia.

In collaboration with local company Delta Marimba, the Rostam Aziz-led Taifa Gas will establish Zambia’s first liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant in the northern part of the country.

This multimillion-dollar investment signifies Taifa Gas’ unwavering commitment to the continent’s energy sector and solidifies its position as a key player.

The ambitious project, subject to receiving crucial approvals from Zambian authorities, including an Environmental Impact Assessment, is projected to commence production within 24 months.

Once operational, the power plant will inject an additional 100 megawatts into the Zambian national grid. The venture strategically positions Taifa Gas to explore diverse opportunities associated with LPG utilization, spanning from cooking gas to power solutions.

Aziz, the Tanzanian billionaire at the helm of Taifa Group, emphasized the alignment between his company and Delta Marimba in leveraging the conducive policies to build a robust economy.

“The time is ripe for our countries to prioritize economic issues, as it is through a thriving economy that we can transform the lives of our people,” he said, stressing the importance of translating the longstanding political relations between Tanzania and Zambia into economic benefits for their citizens.

Taifa Group, under Aziz’s leadership, has demonstrated a firm commitment to transforming East Africa’s energy sector. Earlier this year, Taifa Gas was licensed to establish a cooking gas plant and storage facilities at the Mombasa port.

Another company within the group, Taifa Energy, partnered with the state-owned Zanzibar Electricity Corporation to develop a utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project on the island.

The project, valued at $140 million, aims to contribute 180 megawatts to the Zanzibar grid and marks a historic collaboration between GCL and Taifa Energy as Tanzania’s first utility-scale solar PV project.

South African Court Declares Termination Of Zimbabwean Exemption Permit Unlawful And Unconstitutional

South African Court Declares Termination Of Zimbabwean Exemption Permit Unlawful And Unconstitutional

The Minister of Home Affairs’ decision to terminate the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit program has been deemed unlawful, unconstitutional, and void.

A full bench of three judges at the Pretoria High Court has ordered the minister to review the matter in accordance with a fair procedure that adheres to the applicable laws.

During this period of review, the permits will continue to be valid for an additional 12 months, extending until the end of June 2024.

Furthermore, individuals holding the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP) will be safeguarded against arrest and deportation.

The Helen Suzman Foundation and the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa initiated the legal action after the minister’s announcement in 2021 regarding the termination of the program.

Despite granting subsequent extensions, the minister maintained his position that the 178,000 permit holders must either apply for alternative visas if they were eligible or return to their country of origin.

In the highly anticipated ruling on Wednesday, Judges Colleen Collis, Gcina Malindi, and Mandlenkosi Motha (as the court) highlighted that the minister had failed to seek input from those impacted before making the decision.

They emphasized that the initial call for representations was conducted “after the fact” and did not constitute a genuine consultation.

The judges stated that the invitation was essentially meaningless in terms of providing a meaningful opportunity for affected parties to have their voices heard.

The judges said throughout the answering affidavit (deposed to by the director-general of the department) there was a “notable disdain for the value of public participation”.
The judges found that the minister’s decision to terminate the program was procedurally unfair and irrational due to the lack of consultation.
They emphasized that no effort was made to evaluate the consequences for ZEP holders and their children.
“As a decision of this consequence impacts over 178,000 permit holders, it would have required proper information on who would be affected, to what degree and what measures were in place to ameliorate this impact.

“It further requires a careful assessment of the current conditions in Zimbabwe.

“Before this court, there is simply no admissible evidence from the Minister on whether he took these considerations into account and how.”

Miles seeks judgement on admission against The State, Registrar of Societies

MATERO member of parliament Miles Sampa has asked the Lusaka High Court to enter judgement on admission against the Registrar of Societies and the State for conceding that they have not barred Edgar Lungu from cherry-picking leaders of the PF after he lost such powers.

Sampa said the there is no arguable case before court because the Registrar of Societies and the State have admitted that Former President Edgar Lungu breached Article 53(1) of the constitution when he handpicked Given Lubinda as acting party president, after he suffered a humiliating defeat in the August 12, 2021 elections.

In an affidavit in support of summons for an order for judgement on admission, Sampa said according to Article 53(1) of the PF constitution when a president resigns or is oust in line with the said Article, they no longer have dominion in making party appointments.

“I am entitled to the relief of an order that the provisions of Article 53(2) of the PF constitution are null and void as they are imperative and contradict the provisions of Article 53(1) of the PF constitution,” Sampa said.

He indicated that minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu issued special directives through Gazette notice no. 593 of 2023 empowering the Registrar of Societies to compel a registered society to comply with the Societies Act and their own constitutions including but not limited to hold elections when an elected office bearer dies, resigns or is removed from office for whatsoever reason.

“I am entitled to the relief for an order that the failure or refusal by the Registrar of Societies to intervene in the blatant abrogation of the PF constitution is a dereliction of duty and failure under the mandate provided to the Registrar of Societies under the Societies Act,”Sampa said.

He emphasized that the Court enters judgement on admission against the respondents for admitting his claims in order to save time.

In this matter Sampa has sued the Registrar of Societies and the State in the Lusaka High Court for not taking a hand in the party’s infighting on who replaces Edgar Lungu at the next general elective conference.

He wants the court to compel the PF to hold the extraordinary general conference within 30 days from the date of the judgement, in accordance with the party constitution for members to elect the party leader and 25 members of the central committee.

Sampa is seeking an order that the failure by the Registrar of Societies to intervene in the blatant abrogation of the PF constitution is a dereliction of duty and failure to exercise its authority provided for in the Registrar of Societies Act.

In its defense the Registrar of Societies indicated that The Societies’ Act has no provisions which empowers it to compel a political party to hold a convention.

It said the PF did not officially communicate to it that Lungu was illegally cherry-picking party leaders.

Scientists discover World’s oldest burial site in South Africa

Paleontologists have unearthed the world’s oldest burial site in South Africa, containing remains of Homo Naledi, a small-brained distant relative of humans previously known to be incapable of complex behavior.

National Geographic Explorer in Residence and world-renowned paleoanthropologist, Lee Berger, led a team of researchers that unearthed the new evidence; Homo naledi – a tree-climbing, Stone Age hominid, buried about 30 meters (100 feet) underground in the Rising Star cave system in South Africa – UNESCO world heritage site near Johannesburg.

The extinct near-human species used meaning-making symbols to bury their dead; the two behaviors which the world earlier thought to be exclusive to hominins with much larger brains.

“These are the most ancient interments yet recorded in the hominin record, earlier than evidence of Homo sapiens interments by at least 100,000 years,” the scientists wrote in a series of yet-to-be peer-reviewed scientific papers.

The burials, symbols, and interpretation of the findings are now available as preprints for immediate download from BioRxiv, pending the subsequent official publication as eLife Reviewed Preprints.

“Funded by the National Geographic Society, Berger and his team – including fellow National Geographic Explorers, Dr. Keneiloe Molopyane – lead excavator in the Dragon’s Back chamber, and Agustín Fuentes, on-site biocultural specialist, identified depressions deep in the chambers of the Rising Star cave system. Bodies of H. naledi adults and several children estimated to be younger than 13 years of age were deposited in fetal positions, which suggests intentional burial of the dead,” National Geographic stated on its website.

“The interments predate the earliest known Homo sapiens burials by at least 100,000 years, making the Rising Star burials some of the most ancient in the hominin record and indicating that burials might not have been limited to H. sapiens or other hominins with larger brain sizes,” National Geographic added.

Additionally, the researchers discovered engraved symbols on the cave walls, including deeply impressed cross-hatchings and other geometric shapes on surfaces that appeared to have been prepared and smoothed, suggesting a time of 241,000 to 335,000 years old.

“These recent findings suggest intentional burials, the use of symbols, and meaning-making activities by Homo naledi. It seems an inevitable conclusion that in combination they indicate that this small-brained species of ancient human relatives was performing complex practices related to death,” said Berger.

Fuentes, who is also a professor of anthropology at Princeton University, said, “To be inside the caves, inside the world of Homo naledi, is not only a life-changing adventure, but what we’ve uncovered forces us to rethink a whole set of assumptions about hominins and human evolution.”

The Rising Star cave system in South Africa has remained one of the most successful sites for hominin fossils in the world, with the recent findings adding a new chapter to what the world knows about the human origin story.

The discovery suggests that mortuary practices were not exclusive to just large-brained hominins, challenging the existing understanding of human evolution that assumed that the development of larger brains enabled the performance of complex ‘meaning-making’ activities such as burying the dead.

The first Homo naledi fossils were found in the Dinaledi chamber in 2013 by Berger and his team.

Previously unearthed interment of Homo sapiens, thought to be the oldest known burial in the hominin record, dated back 100,000 years. However, the newly-identified burial site dates back at least 200,000 years.

According to the researchers, evidence suggests that burial holes in the cave were deliberately dug and filled in to cover the buried bodies and contained at least five individuals.

“That would mean not only are humans not unique in the development of symbolic practices, but may not have even invented such behaviors,” Berger told AFP in an interview.

While further analysis is underway, the discoveries “alter our understandings of human evolution,” the researchers wrote.

Other scientific discoveries regarding Homo Naledi have been made across the continent, including the single-largest fossil hominine discovery in Africa by scientists from diverse parts of the world in 2015.

Statement By Chief Govt Spokesperson On Claims That Zambia Has Become A Police State

STATEMENT BY THE ACTING MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON, HON. MAKOZO CHIKOTE, MP ON CLAIMS THAT ZAMBIA HAS BECOME A POLICE STATE

Government is shocked at the emerging trend of glorifying suspected criminals and demonising the Police Service for taking action.

We have noted with concern that there are more voices supporting criminality than voices calling for justice, a move seemingly calculated to discourage the police from performing their constitutional role.

Government, therefore, wishes to refute claims made by Our Civic Duty Association (OCIDA) regarding the state of law enforcement and freedom of expression in our country, as reported in some sections of the media.

The assertion that Zambia has become a police state, where individuals are arbitrarily picked up without due process, is entirely unfounded and lacks any substantial evidence.

Further, calling on members of the public to rise against an elected government is counterproductive and potentially harmful to the stability and progress of our country.

Government upholds the principles of the rule of law and respects the rights and freedoms of its citizens as enshrined in the Republican Constitution. Additionally, Government ensures that all actions taken by law enforcement agencies are in accordance with the Constitution and established legal procedures.

Furthermore, President Hakainde Hichilema is on record having called on law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties thoroughly and professionally.

As a democratic nation, the fundamental right to freedom of expression is guaranteed. We firmly believe in the importance of open dialogue, constructive criticism, and robust public debate as vital components of a thriving democracy. Government has always encouraged citizens to express their opinions and engage in discussions that contribute to the betterment of our nation.

Contrary to OCIDA’s claims, the New Dawn Government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema is not sensitive to criticism but rather values and appreciates constructive feedback from its citizens. Constructive criticism enables us to identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions for the betterment of our society.

Government recognises the essential role that civil society organisations, such as OCIDA, play in holding the government accountable and promoting transparency.

However, it is imperative to differentiate between legitimate criticism and unsubstantiated claims. Government welcomes constructive criticism that is based on facts, evidence, and a genuine desire to contribute to the development of our nation. It is through informed discussions that we can address challenges, find common ground, and forge a path towards progress.

Government urges OCIDA and other organisations to engage in meaningful dialogue and provide specific instances or evidence to support their claims, rather than resorting to broad generalisations. This will enable us to address any legitimate concerns and take appropriate action where necessary.

We remain committed to upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Government will continue to foster an environment that encourages open discourse, respects freedom of expression, and ensures that law enforcement agencies operate within the confines of the law.

In conclusion, we refute the baseless claims made by OCIDA regarding Zambia as a police state and the supposed intolerance towards criticism. We call upon all citizens to promote constructive dialogue, uphold the rule of law, and work together to build a prosperous and inclusive Zambia.

ZAMBIAN MONEY IN KAMPALA UGANDA BUILDS THE BIGGEST SHOPPING MALL IN CENTRAL AFRICA …***

By Stembridge Sikalundu

This information is trending again after many years when CK revealed to the nation , then the investigative wings thought he had taken a cup of wine . it is not yet officially mentioned by the govt of this country to justify whether there is a crime or not , the power of social media led to the removal of many presidents around the world, zambians are not inferior to these global services which have dynamically transformed the world by changing the mindsets , it is believed the internet aspect is the eighth wonders of the world .

There is no secrete under the sun , there is no place too far , information is always at the people’s finger tips . It will be very interesting in the few days to come to know who took zambian money to Uganda to build such a huge mall ? , It is amazing to know where this money came from and how it was being transfered to build this multifacility complex . In Zambia we don’t deny people to do business , therefore no one is prevented from constructing any business premise anywhere in the world .

The zambian owner of this shopping mall should be a reliable investor in UGANDA with a reputable business history in Zambia , this investment should not have started from UGANDA but in Zambia under a very common name which has been seen to do very well in the business circles of this country . What will make zambians think money was stolen from this country to build this huge shopping mall ?, When the owner is known to have the credibility to do so ,if the personality has no successful business records in Zambia , he must be declared as another thief as those who are being persued .

This is why I’ve been telling many zambians that change of govt is one of the best civic games to know what has been going on the country in hiding assets . Zambians should be very patient and wait to know who the owner of this huge shopping mall in UGANDA is ?, It is important that we get the actual value of this mall and know if this money was just stolen out of the country , it will allow us know how many zambians were deprived of services and other obligatory goods to improve lives . God bless mother Zambia.

I CRY ZAMBIA IS MY BELOVED COUNTRY
