No presidential candidate has enough money to win an election – Aka

By Elijah Munkombwe

PRINCE Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika has argued that none of the current presidential candidates in Zambia has sufficient personal wealth to single-handedly finance and win a general election under the country’s prevailing political environment.

Commonly known as Aka, the former cabinet minister and diplomat said the cost of running a successful national campaign has grown beyond the capacity of any individual candidate, regardless of how wealthy they may appear.

He further claimed that President Hakainde Hichilema did not ascend to the presidency solely on the strength of his personal wealth, but by presenting himself as “super rich”, a perception which helped to inspire confidence among voters, party structures and financiers.

Aka said elections in Zambia are no longer won on personal resources alone, but through broad alliances, party mobilisation and support from various interest groups.

He noted that no individual can credibly claim to have financed their way to State House alone, adding that the political system demands collective support and strategic positioning.

Aka said what matters most is how a candidate presents themselves and convinces others that they are a viable contender.

He also cautioned aspiring presidential candidates against underestimating the financial and logistical demands of national campaigns, noting that rallies, mobilisation, media coverage and election monitoring require enormous resources.

He warned that while democracy should not be reduced to a contest of money, the rising cost of politics risks excluding capable leaders who lack access to strong financial networks.

Apologize to members, Kampyongo urges PF Leadership

Apologize to members, Kampyongo urges PF Leadership

…as he warns that Lubinda’s ‘illegal’ expulsions risk sinking former ruling party….

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Central Committee member and Shiwang’andu MP, Stephen Kampyongo, has urged the party’s leadership to apologize to members for dragging their feet on resolving the leadership crisis, saying the general membership have waited for too long and deserve direction, not continued squabbles.

Mr. Kampyongo emphasized that the leadership wrangles have gone on for too long and that it was time for leaders to put the party’s interest first.

“Collectively as leaders of PF, we must be apologizing to our general membership for seemingly taking them for granted. If there was leadership in place that people accepted, I don’t think we would have all these issues,” Mr. Kampyongo said, reacting to the suspension of PF officials, including himself, by acting president Given Lubinda.

In an interview, Mr. Kampyongo, a former minister of Home Affairs, questioned the legitimacy of Mr. Lubinda’s decision, saying he was using ‘authority he does not have’.

He urged him to ‘appeal to his wisdom’ and resolve the disputes amicably.

Mr. Kampyongo explained that he and others had attended a Tonse Alliance meeting, which led to the ‘illegal’ expulsion, in a bid to strengthen collaboration with alliance partners as they sought a way forward.

Given the current impasse, Mr. Kampyongo emphasized that PF members are patiently waiting for the party to regain its legal status, and cannot just sit back and do nothing.

“As far as I know, we are all waiting for our party to resolve its leadership wrangles and get back its legal status. But as things stand, it seems this court issue involving Robert Chabinga over the party leadership will continue and we can not just fold our arms and sit back without looking for alternative solutions,” he said.

Mr. Kampyongo also warned against being antagonistic with Tonse Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties aiming to challenge the ruling UPND in the August 2026 general election, saying it could be an alternative vehicle.

“We should not be antagonistic with partners like Tonse Alliance which we should collaborate with. We might be just burying our heads in the sand. We can not continue dragging Tonse Alliance into our own problems,” he said.

He added that the opposition needed direction, not just a loose alliance. “Yes, it is important that the opposition must come together but there must be a proper direction as the August general election, which will see Zambians elect a new president and expanded parliament, is fast approaching,” he stated.

Mr. Kampyongo emphasized that PF leaders should appeal to their wisdom and avoid being emotional or dealing with authority they did not have.

“Let’s be law-abiding. If we are saying we can not go to the convention because of the court injunction, how then do you start expelling members who are holding the party together? How many people are you going to remain with?” Mr. Kampyongo questioned.

Mr. Kampyongo, who has been loyal to PF, said he and others had been punished for their loyalty. He disclosed that he, together with other senior party members, are still fighting the illegal expulsion in court that was meted out by Miles Sampa for merely attending the meeting which was called by acting president Given Lubinda at Cresta Lodge where late president Edgar Chagwa Lungu also attended.

“Imagine, as I speak, I am in court with others fighting the illegal expulsion which was meted out on us by Miles Sampa for only attending the meeting which was called by acting president Given Lubinda, and attended by the late president Edgar Chagwa Lungu at Cresta Lodge. This illegal expulsion by Sampa is the only disciplinary action I have faced in the party since I joined,” he stated.

He added: “I don’t know how they want us to demonstrate our loyalty, because honestly if we were greedy or treacherous, we would have bargained with Miles Sampa who gave us the option to either recognize his leadership or risk being removed from parliamentary leadership positions (leader of opposition and Whip of the opposition) that we were appointed to by late president Edgar Lungu before he retired from active politics. But as you all know, we opted to be humiliated as we were removed from those positions because of our loyalty and commitment to our leadership and the party.”

Mr. Kampyongo reiterated that the party’s leadership should prioritize resolving the crisis and regain the trust of its members.

“We need to put our house in order and move forward as a party. The general membership deserves better,” he said.

PSYCHOLOGICAL LOADSHEDDING, WHEN POWER IS BACK, ZAMBIANS CANNOT AFFORD TO SWITCH IT ON- Fred M’membe

PSYCHOLOGICAL LOADSHEDDING, WHEN POWER IS BACK, ZAMBIANS CANNOT AFFORD TO SWITCH IT ON

The most dangerous form of governance failure is not always found in outright collapse. Sometimes, it hides behind impressive statistics, polished economic presentations, and carefully crafted narratives of success.

The government of Mr Hakainde Hichilema appears to have perfected this art through what can only be described as psychological load shading, a situation where the burden of economic hardship is not removed but merely repackaged and redistributed in ways that quietly suffocate citizens and businesses alike.

This government of Mr Hichilema  has consistently celebrated macroeconomic indicators as evidence of economic recovery. Inflation has shown signs of moderation compared to the peak levels witnessed in previous years. The stability of the Kwacha has been cited as another achievement.

However, these statistics are increasingly detached from the lived reality of ordinary Zambians. Citizens do not buy inflation percentages in the market. They buy mealie meal, fuel, electricity, and basic commodities whose prices continue to escalate despite the government’s optimistic projections.

Electricity supply remains one of the clearest examples of this psychological load shading. The government and energy authorities have frequently attempted to present improvements in power availability as proof of progress.

Yet, this increased availability has been accompanied by steep tariff adjustments that have significantly increased the cost of electricity consumption for households and businesses. The result is a paradox where power may be available more frequently, but its affordability has drastically declined. Availability without affordability is not progress. *It is merely the transfer of economic pressure from supply shortages to financial suffocation.*

Furthermore, there is growing concern among citizens and businesses that energy consumption rates have quietly accelerated through tariff structures and consumption thresholds that punish users faster than before.

Small-scale businesses, which form the backbone of Zambia’s informal and SME driven economy, are particularly vulnerable. These enterprises operate on thin margins and rely heavily on stable and affordable electricity to remain viable. The sudden escalation in power costs is forcing many to either scale down operations or pass the increased costs onto consumers. This inevitably triggers a ripple effect across the economy, pushing commodity prices upwards and eroding purchasing power.

The government has often argued that tariff increases are necessary to sustain investment in energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on subsidies.

While economic sustainability is a legitimate objective, the pace and structure of these adjustments raise serious questions about whether adequate protection mechanisms exist for vulnerable citizens. A responsible government balances fiscal reforms with social cushioning. What Zambia is witnessing appears to be reform driven by financial compliance rather than social stability.

The consequences of this policy direction are becoming increasingly visible. The cost of doing business continues to rise, discouraging investment in small and medium enterprises that are widely recognised as engines of job creation.

Consumers are bearing the ultimate burden through rising commodity prices, stagnant wages, and declining disposable income. The promise that macroeconomic stability would translate into improved household welfare is beginning to ring hollow.

There is also a deeper psychological impact that cannot be ignored. Citizens are being repeatedly told that the economy is improving while their daily survival becomes more difficult.

This disconnect between official narratives and personal experience creates frustration, mistrust, and economic anxiety. When citizens lose confidence in economic leadership, recovery becomes far more difficult regardless of statistical improvements.

Economic policies must be evaluated not only through fiscal discipline but also through their social consequences.

Sustainable economic recovery is not measured solely by inflation graphs or exchange rate performance. It is measured by the ability of ordinary citizens to afford essential services, maintain businesses, and preserve dignity in their daily lives.

DOES THE REVEREND FINALLY HAVE FOOD IN HIS MOUTH? WALTER MWAMBAZI AND HIS DEFENCE OF AUTHORITARIAN DRIFT IN ZAMBIA

DOES THE REVEREND FINALLY HAVE FOOD IN HIS MOUTH? WALTER MWAMBAZI AND HIS DEFENCE OF AUTHORITARIAN DRIFT IN ZAMBIA

By Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

….When Clergy Choose Power Over Truth

Rev. Walter Mwambazi appears to have found a new calling: defending the wrongs of those who abuse and rob people of their rights, and trivialising the experiences of those complaining about injustice. In recent weeks, the good Reverend has been saying regime-praising things that are normally associated with individuals generally seen as turncoats, like Nevers Mumba. What has happened to Rev. Mwambazi? To paraphrase Thabo Mbeki, empty stomachs are good or bad teachers. The problem with our Zambian reverends is that they too have stomachs, in addition to their excellent mouths. It is becoming increasingly difficult to listen to Rev. Mwambazi nowadays without thinking that he has become the new Nevers Mumba or that he has, at the very least, finally got food in his mouth, which makes it hard for him to speak with the clarity he once had. Perhaps I should address the Reverend directly over his latest troubling remarks, which are, however, consistent with his seemingly new role.

Rev. Mwambazi, your assertion that “people who think Zambia is turning into a dictatorship have absolutely no clue what it means to live in one,” followed by your taunt that critics should “try what they do here in Rwanda or Uganda,” is not an innocent opinion. It is a calculated dismissal of legitimate civic alarm and a thinly veiled defence of state overreach.

This is not ignorance. It is complicity.

Your words do not educate the public. They ridicule it. They do not clarify democracy. They distort it. Coming from a religious leader, they represent a profound moral failure. You have chosen to position yourself between citizens and their right to question power, not as a neutral observer, but as a shield for those who govern.

Dictatorship is not defined by how brutal other countries are. It is defined by how rapidly a society is trained to accept intimidation, selective justice, and shrinking freedom as normal. Your argument depends on a grotesque standard, one in which repression only counts once it becomes catastrophic. By that logic, warning signs must be ignored until the damage is irreversible.

That is not wisdom. It is surrender.

Normalising Repression Is a Political Act

When you tell Zambians that their concerns are exaggerated because it is worse elsewhere, you are not defending democracy. You are lowering its threshold. You are instructing citizens to tolerate abuse until it becomes unbearable. You are telling them that fear, surveillance, arrests, and legal intimidation are acceptable so long as they are not yet lethal.

This is precisely how authoritarianism survives: not through force alone, but through voices of respectability that urge silence, patience, and comparison instead of resistance.

History has a name for clergy who behave this way. They are not remembered as peacemakers. They are remembered as collaborators.

Comparisons That Insult Intelligence

Invoking Rwanda and Uganda as your measuring stick is intellectually dishonest and morally obscene. Zambia is not competing to be the least oppressive state in the region. Democracy is not a regional ranking exercise. The absence of extreme brutality does not equal the presence of freedom.

By your reasoning, no citizen has the right to object until journalists vanish, opposition leaders are permanently jailed, or blood is spilled. That position is not only absurd; it is dangerous. It turns democracy into a corpse that may only be mourned after it is dead.

Democracy is defined by limits on power, not by the patience of the oppressed.

Authoritarianism in Legal Disguise and Clerical Applause

Modern authoritarianism does not announce itself with coups. It advances through laws that sound reasonable and are defended by people who should know better.

The Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act is one such law. Its vague provisions grant the state extraordinary power to police speech, monitor citizens, and criminalise dissent. In any honest analysis, this law is a tool of intimidation. Yet instead of questioning it, voices like yours dismiss public concern as hysteria.

When laws are selectively enforced, used against critics while allies of power enjoy immunity, law itself becomes a weapon. Those who defend such systems from pulpits are not guardians of morality. They are accessories.

Bill 7: Contempt for the Constitution Enabled by Silence

The Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act No. 7 of 2025 is a blatant example of executive arrogance. After the Constitutional Court ruled the original bill unconstitutional due to the absence of adequate public consultation, the government did not respect the judgment. It manoeuvred around it

This was a direct assault on constitutionalism.

Civil society, including the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops, spoke out. You did not. Instead, you chose to deflect, minimise, and redirect attention away from the abuse of process. Silence in the face of constitutional vandalism is not neutrality. It is endorsement.

Selective Justice Is Not an Accident

Opposition figures are arrested swiftly. Politically connected individuals are shielded. Police enforcement follows party lines. Public assemblies are blocked selectively. Elections exist, but participation is punished.

This is not coincidence. It is design.

A system that criminalises opposition while protecting loyalty is authoritarian by definition. Anyone who denies this reality is either wilfully blind or actively invested in preserving that imbalance.

The Criminalisation of Dissent

In functioning democracies, opposition leaders hold rallies without begging permission. Citizens boo their leaders openly. They insult them. They express anger publicly. Leaders endure this because public office is not a throne.

In dictatorships, rallies are banned. Booing is criminalised. Anger is treated as rebellion. Pelting leaders with stones, however symbolic, is met not with ordinary policing but with overwhelming force, often involving the military under the authority of the commander-in-chief.

When a state fears booing, it has already lost moral authority. When clergy defend that fear, they betray their calling.

Fear Is the Real Censorship

Yes, Zambians still speak, but increasingly with caution. Journalists self-censor. Activists calculate risk. Ordinary citizens weigh words against consequences. This is how repression functions without mass arrests.

Dictatorship is not only about what the state does. It is also about what people stop doing because voices like yours told them their fears were imaginary.

Gratitude Is the Language of Subjects, Not Citizens

Citizens owe governments nothing but scrutiny. Democracy does not require gratitude for restraint. It requires resistance to overreach.

Sermons that urge silence, obedience, or comparison with worse regimes do not protect peace. They protect power. History has never been kind to religious figures who sanctified authority while freedom eroded.

Conclusion

Zambia does not need to resemble Rwanda or Uganda to justify alarm. It only needs to exhibit centralised power, shrinking civic space, selective justice, constitutional manipulation, and intolerance of dissent.

It already does.

Rev. Mwambazi, when the full cost of this moment becomes clear, it will matter who warned and who mocked, who spoke and who silenced, who challenged power and who defended it for the wrong reasons.

Authoritarianism is not defined by how bad things are elsewhere.
It is defined by who stands in its way and who clears the path.

Why Zambia is Turning to Ghana as Gold Takes Centre Stage

🇿🇲 EXCLUSIVE | Why Zambia is Turning to Ghana as Gold Takes Centre Stage

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama arrived late Wednesday afternoon in the Zambian capital on a three-day state visit at the invitation of Hakainde Hichilema, stepping off the aircraft alongside his wife First Lady Lordina Mahama into a formal military welcome that signaled the signifance Lusaka is placing on what comes next

Mahama, dressed in traditional Ghanaian attire, walked the red carpet past an honour guard as Zambian service chiefs and senior officials looked on. He and his wife were received by President Hichilema and First Lady Mutinta Hichilema, setting a diplomatic tone that blends symbolism with hard economics.

The agenda is unusually focused. Gold.

Zambia is recalibrating its minerals policy at a moment of heightened security enforcement. Just weeks ago, the Zambia Army shut down illegal mining hubs, including the Kikonge gold rush, triggering a mass exodus of informal miners and tightening state control across mineral-rich corridors in North-Western, Central and parts of Northern Province.

Immigration authorities have simultaneously intensified arrests of undocumented migrants linked to artisanal mining networks. The message from Lusaka is clear: minerals will be governed, not improvised.

Hichilema has been explicit about why Ghana matters; “We don’t want our minerals to create rivers of blood,” he has said repeatedly, pointing to West African experiences where gold wealth fed conflict and criminality.

Ghana offers a counter-example the Zambian government wants to study, adapt and scale.

Between 2021 and 2025, Ghana transformed its gold governance by expanding state participation, formalising small-scale mining, tightening export controls and building reserves. Publicly reported figures show Ghana’s gold reserves rising from about eight tonnes to roughly 35 tonnes over that period, strengthening foreign exchange buffers, stabilising the currency and generating billions of dollars in value through greater state oversight.

For Zambia, emerging from debt restructuring and having just concluded its IMF programme, such outcomes are not abstract. They are policy targets.

This visit builds on groundwork already laid. Zambia dispatched a ministerial delegation to Accra last year to study Ghana’s gold institutions. Hichilema himself visited Ghana in 2023. The difference now is timing. Zambia’s macro position has stabilised, foreign reserves have climbed, and investor confidence has improved.

The state is no longer firefighting. It is repositioning.

Mahama is expected to address Parliament, underlining the political dimension of the engagement. Bilateral talks at State House will focus on mining value addition, regulatory design, enforcement architecture and joint investment frameworks.

A Zambia–Ghana Business Forum will follow, linking the conversation to trade, capital flows and private-sector partnerships under the AfCFTA.

Security considerations run through every layer of the visit. Illegal mining has become a national risk, not merely an economic nuisance. Military deployments and law-enforcement operations have changed facts on the ground, but sustainability requires policy.

Ghana’s experience shows how formalisation, licensing and state buying mechanisms can drain oxygen from criminal networks while protecting community livelihoods.

For markets, the signal is equally clear. Zambia wants gold to do what copper has long done: anchor reserves, stabilise the currency and attract long-term capital. With copper prices volatile and climate shocks exposing energy risks, diversifying mineral governance is no longer optional.

It is strategic.

Mahama’s presence in Lusaka, flanked by ceremonial pageantry and guarded by tight security, reflects that shift. This is not a courtesy call. It is a working visit at a moment when Zambia is attempting to convert macro stability into durable economic architecture.

The test will come after the motorcades leave. Whether Zambia can translate Ghana’s lessons into institutions that outlive the headlines will determine whether gold becomes a pillar of stability or another chapter in the country’s long struggle to govern abundance.

THE SADC ELECTORAL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SEAC) IN ZAMBIA – WHAT CITIZENS SAY IS WHAT MATTERS IN THE END

THE SADC ELECTORAL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SEAC) IN ZAMBIA – WHAT CITIZENS SAY IS WHAT MATTERS IN THE END

By Kellys Kaunda

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) team will confer with just about every relevant organ with a role in elections and those, directly or indirectly affected by the electoral process in Zambia.

At the end of the process, the advisory council will issue a report which will include highlights of areas of concern and recommendations.

But if reports of this kind are anything to go by, I ll tell you that the views that really matter are those of local players.

Not what they will say to the council but what they always say in the course of their political activities.

It matters more because it’s lived reality. It’s not filtered through diplomatic reports.

It’s raw footage unfolding in real time in front of the whole nation to see.

As you may know by now, most SADC, AU and UN reports are written in diplomatic parlance that consequently  downplays ugly and uncomfortable truths.

Governments love these missions because they offer an opportunity for free strategic public relations in front of an international audience.

If you really want to know the truth about your country’s electoral process, listen to your countrymen and women.

If you want to change anything about the electoral process in your country, listen to your fellow citizens irrespective of their political affiliation, if any.

ZAMBIA, DRC & ANGOLA ALIGN TO ACCELERATE #LOBITO CORRIDOR IMPLEMENTATION

ZAMBIA, DRC & ANGOLA ALIGN TO ACCELERATE #LOBITO CORRIDOR IMPLEMENTATION

The Lobito Corridor has entered a decisive phase, transitioning from strategic conception and political alignment into coordinated implementation.

With firm commitments now in place from corridor countries and international partners, attention has shifted to execution—aligning financing, sequencing investments, harmonizing standards, and establishing durable governance mechanisms capable of translating ambition into a fully operational regional trade and logistics corridor.

It is against this backdrop that the Government of the Republic of #Angola, in partnership with the World Bank, is hosting the Inaugural Coordination Meeting on the Lobito Corridor from February 3 to 6, 2026, with the main plenary session scheduled for February 5 at the InterContinental Hotel, in #Luanda.

The meeting is focussing on the Lobito Corridor as a 1,300-kilometre integrated railway and infrastructure system linking the mineral-rich regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (#DRC) and Zambia, to Angola’s Port of Lobito on the #Atlantic_Ocean.

The corridor is now increasingly recognised as a strategic enabler of critical raw-material supply chains, regional industrialization, and improved access to global markets, while also supporting broader trade, logistics, and value-addition activities across Southern and #CentralAfrica.

Zambia’s delegation, led by the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Dr. SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, MP, and the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. CHARLES MILUPI, MP, is in Luanda, and was received on arrival by Zambia’s #Ambassador to Angola, Dr. ELIAS MUNSHYA.

The delegation also includes the Head of the #Presidential Delivery Unit, Ms. KUSOBILE KAMWAMBI, and the Permanent Secretary (Cabinet Office), Ms. NAOMI TETAMASHIMBA, reflecting Zambia’s whole-of-government approach to delivery, coordination, and accountability.

The Inaugural Coordination Meeting seeks to formally launch a regional coordination #architecture to accelerate corridor development, align national implementation timelines, and ensure coherence across public and private investments. It also aims to strengthen collaboration among the governments of Angola, Zambia, and the DRC, together with international partners including the World Bank Group, the European Union (#EU), and the United States (#USA), to improve planning, mobilize financing, and agree on clear, sequenced next steps for implementation.

In addition, the meeting will advance discussions on targeted infrastructure upgrades, including rail extensions and port enhancements, designed to reduce transport and #logistics costs, improve cross-border connectivity, facilitate trade, and support growth in #mining, #agriculture, agro-industry, transport, and logistics. For Zambia, these investments are integral to boosting #exports, crowding in private investment, and supporting sustainable growth and #jobcreation.

The meeting is expected to establish a robust framework for ongoing coordination, with the potential to mobilize significant public and private financing, including #investments from development partners and private financiers.

It is also expected to reinforce regional and international partnerships, building on prior commitments such as the 2024 memorandum of understanding involving the United States, the European Union, the African Development Bank (#AFDB), and corridor countries, while reaffirming shared commitments to cooperation and delivery.

Discussions will further advance dialogue on inclusive and equitable corridor-linked development, including appropriate consideration of social and community impacts in connected regions.

The meeting is expected to serve as a platform for subsequent engagements, including the Angola–EU #LobitoCorridor Business Forum planned for later this year.

Strategic Importance to Zambia and Pathways for Participation

For Zambia, the #Lobito Corridor is a strategic national priority. It will strengthen export diversification, reduce #logistics costs, and provide more efficient access to the Atlantic, thereby enhancing the country’s competitiveness in mining, agriculture, and emerging value-addition industries.

By expanding Zambia’s trade options and reducing dependence on longer and higher-cost routes, the corridor will enhance economic resilience and support #macroeconomic_stability over the medium to long term.

When the corridor enters its brick-and-mortar phase, significant opportunities will arise for the #privatesector to participate in construction, engineering, rail and port services, logistics, energy supply, and related support industries.

Beyond construction, a fully functioning corridor will create sustained opportunities in freight handling, mineral processing, agri-logistics, industrial parks, #tradefinance, and cross-border services.

The Government of the Republic of Zambia encourages the business community, financial institutions, and development partners to position themselves early, align investment plans with corridor priorities, and engage actively, not only in building the physical infrastructure, but also in operating, servicing, and scaling the economic #ecosystems that will underpin the Lobito Corridor as a long-term engine of growth, trade, and #regionalintegration.

End.

‎I’VE RECEIVED OFFERS TO BE RUNNING MATE – KAPWEPWE

‎Late former Zambia’s vice-president in the UNIP government, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe’s daughter, Mulenga, says she has received offers to contest as running mate in the 2026 general elections, and that the position should be given to someone with the capabilities as opposed to their longevity in the political setup.

‎And Kapwepwe has disclosed that she was receiving numerous offers for a running mate and other positions from different directions.

‎Former PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri this week told Daily Revelation that presidential aspirant Makebi Zulu must consider a PF ‘true green’ like herself for running mate over the push by some in the party for Kapwepwe to be considered for the position. She questioned who Kapwepwe was to deserve a mention for such a lofty position.

UPND may lose 2026 polls on voters’ wisdom not opposition strength- John Sangwa

Renowned Lusaka Lawyer and Movement for National Renewal (MNR)
leader John Sangwa says opposition coalitions have failed to
make a mark in the country.

Sangwa posits that the fact that every Jack or Jill can easily
form political parties is the major drawback in having
versatile opposition alliances in Zambia.

He pointed out that the obtaining environment where anyone can
form a political party, is driving many to just think they can
go it alone.

Speaking when he featured on the EMV Veriefied podcast Sangwa
said the other drawback was the absence of a binding legal
framework to provide for respect for memorandum and of
Understanding (MOU) signed in an alliance that would provide
for legal effect.

He said when a legal framework such as the Political Party
Bill, is not promulgated it will remain almost impossible for
alliances to work.

He said Section 24 the provided of the Bill provided for
electoral pacts and political alliances.

He has an example where a legal framework existed in Kenya,
where the MOUs are deposited with the Registrar of Political
Parties and had legal effect.

He said if the Opposition Parties succeeded in forming
alliances before the 2026 elections, it would be based on
Gentleman’s Agreement and the process remained n

He also stated that he had difficulties with the current
arrangements and initiatives based on the removal of the UPND
government and where policies were not the driving force.

He said the UPND has failed the people of Zambia, but
alternative programs and different policies.

He said the country has not learnt anything on the details of
electoral pacts or alliances of 1963, 1991, 2011 and 2021.

He said the failure by the opposition would leave the wisdom to
the people as shown in both 2011 and 2021 despite having
numerous candidates, the race was a two-horse race.

He however said the constitutional provisions that required a
presidential candidate need to win with a majority victory of
50%+1, a matter that will force the Opposition to come
together. -ZE

I’M HAPPY I LEFT PF BEFORE ALL THIS MESS – STARDY  MWALE

I’M HAPPY I LEFT PF BEFORE ALL THIS MESS – STARDY

FORMER Copperbelt PF Provincial Chairperson Stardy Mwale says he is a happy person for having left the party before the current “mess” unfolded.

On Sunday, the Given Lubinda-led PF faction expelled several MPs from the party for attending what they termed an “illegal” Tonse meeting.

In an interview, Monday, Mwale accused PF acting president Given Lubinda and Chishimba Kambwili of destroying the party.

“I still stand [with] my head up, shoulders high, because if anything, I was the first person who saw where the entire PF political life was heading to. I put down my tools as Provincial Chairperson, and Member of the Central Committee. Today I am vindicated and my reason was [PF acting president] Mr [Given] Lubinda, the way he does his politics together with Mr Chishimba Kambwili. Mr Chishimba Kambwili has become the consultant to Mr Given Lubinda, where has the friendship come from? I don’t know. But I can tell the friendship has come just to destroy PF completely. In their wisdom, it’s like they are building, but from the public perspective or public eye, is that they have destroyed PF completely. I stand to be a very happy person with natural wisdom that I left before all this big mess that is happening,” Mwale said.

“They cannot reconcile because Mr Lubinda is doing wrong things. You can only reconcile if you realise what you are doing is wrong. Then you can reconcile with people who have seen that what you are doing is wrong. As far as Mr Lubinda is concerned, his group is concerned, by the way, [as far as] a very small [group of] followers are concerned, they are doing the right things. They have no stamina in expelling [or] instilling discipline in any party officials in the PF. They have no absolute power, but unfortunately they are pretending, that’s why [Stephen] Kampyongo called them to be toothless bull-dogs. They are trying to bite when they know they have no teeth”.

Mwale charged that Lubinda was greedy and power-hungry, making him incapable of reconciling the party.

“They cannot reconcile, and like you are saying, [with] a few months remaining before the general elections, they will not reconcile. Like I have told you, Mr Lubinda is greedy, hungry for power, so he cannot give a chance for reconciliation. So I believe and I take it they will go divided even for the general elections,” he said

Further, Mwale called on all aggrieved members of the PF to join him once he announces his next move.

“For me, I am yet to make my decision known and I am just calling upon the expelled members, because all of them, they are my colleagues, all of them. We have come a long way, it is sad that they can be suspended for doing probably the right things, because we all told Mr Lubinda, ‘why are you delaying a convention?’ And this is where the problem has come from.

When I finally make a decision, I am calling upon all aggrieved members of the Patriotic Front, including those Mr Lubinda purportedly expelled, to follow me, to follow suit so that we can do the right thing and make the correct decision for the benefit of Zambians,” said Mwale.

Pope Leo XIV petitioned over Archbishop Alick Banda

A coalition of believers, clergy, and religious members of the
Catholic Church in Zambia officially handed over a formal
petition to the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia and Malawi and the
Secretariat of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops
(ZCCB).

Petition Coordinator, Peter Sinkamba confirmed the development
in a statement saying it is aimed at protecting Archbishop
Alick Banda from ‘political persecution’ and interference.

He said the petition, signed by 2,000 Catholic Church members,
addressed to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, is a proactive defense
of the pastoral office of His Grace Dr. Alick Banda, Archbishop
of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, amidst escalating reports of
state-sponsored efforts to procure his removal or transfer.

Key Highlights of the Petition:

• Rejection of Political Interference: The petitioners
categorically reject any pressure from the Government of the
Republic of Zambia aimed at influencing ecclesiastical
appointments. They contend that secular authorities must not
interfere in the “Libertas Ecclesiae” (Freedom of the Church).

• Prophetic Voice Under Attack: The faithful submit that the
Archbishop is being targeted for his unwavering adherence to
Catholic Social Teaching, particularly his “prophetic voice”
regarding justice, governance, and the fundamental option for
the poor.

• Canonical Integrity: The petition highlights that according
to Canon 377 §1, the appointment and removal of Bishops is the
sole, free prerogative of the Supreme Pontiff. The petitioners
argue that unresolved civil allegations or political
displeasure do not constitute “grave causes” for removal under
Canon Law.

• Solidarity in Persecution: The signatories expressed profound
concern over what they describe as “state-sponsored
persecution” and have requested that the Holy See retain Dr.
Alick Banda as Archbishop even in the event of unjust
imprisonment arising from his defense of Church principles.
The Call to Action
The petitioners have humbly requested that the Holy See affirm
the pastoral authority of Archbishop Banda and safeguard the
autonomy of the Church in Zambia from secular overreach.

“We act as ordinary Catholics, concerned for the Church’s
freedom and canonical order. The Church’s mission is to be the
conscience of the nation, and that mission cannot be subject to
the whims of political actors.”

The handover of this petition marks a significant moment in the
relationship between the Church and State in Zambia, as the

MY JOURNEY IN PF HAS BEEN TOXIC, THEY’VE NEVER WELCOMED ME – KANTANSHI MP

MY JOURNEY IN PF HAS BEEN TOXIC, THEY’VE NEVER WELCOMED ME – KANTANSHI MP

KANTANSHI PF MP Anthony Mumba says 2026 will be his last time running as a member of parliament, stressing that he has no intentions of contesting on the PF ticket.

Mumba says his journey in the PF has been toxic as the party has never welcomed him, adding that it is time to move on.

Mumba has served as the Member of Parliament for Kantanshi since 2016, when he first won the seat as an independent candidate. In 2021, he was adopted on the PF ticket and successfully defended the constituency.

In an interview, Mumba said he would be available to serve the nation in a different portfolio.

“From the time I got into Parliament in 2016, I think that even the support that I’ve received from my community has been overwhelming. It has also been challenging. Politics is not a straight-line sort of business, there are frustrations, there are challenges. Many times, the people who stab your back are the people that are close to you. So, as we approach the dissolution of Parliament, which will be on the 15th of May, I made up that decision last year. I’ll go back to consult the people on which party I should go for. I also must mention that 2026 will be my last election as a member of parliament for the country. From 2031, I will be armed with 15 years of experience sitting in Parliament, understanding how government functions. So, at that time, I’ll be looking at what options will be available beyond being a member of parliament,” Mumba said.

“I will still remain in the political scene. I’ll still be quite young, I’ll be in my early 50s in 2031. So, I will still have energy and God-given good health and wisdom. I should be available to serve the people of Zambia in a different portfolio if they allow me to. But for now, I think that it’s been an interesting experience working with people who, when you express a different opinion, [think] that it means you have been bought, you are hired. It’s something that democracy does not speak of because it takes two hands to clap. So, when you find that it’s only one hand that wants to dominate and when you give a different opinion, then UPND has paid you or you have become UPND, which is one of the easiest slogans you hear in PF”.

Mumba also announced that he would not contest on the PF ticket in the forthcoming general elections.

“I have no intentions of contesting on the PF ticket. I think that I’ve had a fair share of poetic leadership which has been in PF. And I came in as an independent and I worked very well. Of course, I worked with the government over there to deliver for the people. There is no need to be hostile to the government because you are there to work for the people. After all, you are part of government, you are a member of government. So, in 2021, president Edgar Lungu approached me to say, ‘look, can you work with me in Kantanshi?’ Who would refuse the president’s instruction anyway? And obviously at that point, I did not even foresee that PF could lose,” said Mumba.

“But I think that the news media has got a full catalogue of what I went through. The humiliation in trying to push that we have a leader. Right up to the time that president Edgar Lungu came back on the scene. And my position was known. And today, look at how shambolic the PF has been in terms of leadership. I think it has been a very toxic journey. A party that has really never welcomed me. So, I think it’s time to move on, it’s time to reshape my political ambitions. I’ve always worked hard for the people”.

KENYA BANS ‘CASH BOUQUETS’ AHEAD OF VALENTINE’S DAY

KENYA BANS ‘CASH BOUQUETS’ AHEAD OF VALENTINE’S DAY

KENYA’S central bank has warned that using banknotes to create floral-style bouquets is illegal and could lead to a prison sentence.

The trend, popularised by social media influencers, involves rolling and pinning cash into decorative arrangements for celebrations.

However, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) says the practice “defaces” the currency and compromises the integrity of the banknotes. Those found guilty of damaging money could face up to seven years in jail.

The bank issued the warning on Monday, noting that banknotes used in bouquets are often glued, stapled, or pinned.

This damage prevents the notes from being processed by ATMs and cash-counting machines, leading to “unnecessary costs” for the public and the bank to replace them.

While the CBK said it does not oppose cash being used as a gift, it urged people to find alternative ways of presenting money that do not involve physical damage.

The announcement has been met with a mix of relief and amusement on social media. Some users noted the ban provides a convenient excuse for those who find the elaborate displays too expensive.

Kenya is not the only African nation taking a firm stand against the creative misuse of currency.

In Nigeria, the central bank has cracked down on the traditional practice of “spraying” money at weddings and parties. Several high-profile figures have recently been arrested for “tampering” with the Naira after videos showed them throwing or treading on banknotes.

Similarly, authorities in Ghana have cautioned against “money cakes”, multi-tiered structures made of folded bills, reminding citizens that the Cedi is state property and must be handled with care to avoid high replacement costs.

Kenya is a major global exporter of flowers, and many have welcomed the move, suggesting that actual roses remain the most appropriate gift for the upcoming Valentine’s Day on 14 February.

HH OUTLINES VISION BEYOND AUGUST 13

HH OUTLINES VISION BEYOND AUGUST 13

AS ZAMBIA heads to the polls on August 13, President Hakainde Hichilema has shared his vision for the nation once re-elected – to grow provincial economies.

The head of State says this is the reason his administration is committed to setting up energy infrastructure in all regions of the country.

And President Hichilema says even naysayers are now privately acknowledging Zambia’s economic progress attained thus far under his administration.

The President was speaking yesterday when he opened the Continental Energy and Infrastructure Investment Forum (CEIIF) themed “Collaborate, Renew, Transition”.

CEIIF serves as a premier platform uniting industry leaders, policy-makers and investors to explore and catalyse opportunities within Africa’s energy and infrastructure sectors.

Hosted for the first time in Zambia, CEIIF has attracted participation from Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, among other countries.

“God’s will, courtesy of the people, we have an election on the 13th of August, if we are re-elected in office, I have already said

“I have caveated God’s will courtesy of the people of Zambia who put leaders in office, we will be driving…. one of the key elements or thrust we are going to push are regional economies – provincial economies,” Mr Hichilema said.

“So, we need energy in each of our provinces in order to drive [a] regional economic agenda, which is part of our vision. So, this forum is so important in that context.”

He said Zambia’s economy is on the “move”.

“In our democratic dispensation, those who disagreed with us strongly and violently, we know that privately they acknowledge the progress that has been made. It’s very clear. We have no problem,” the head of State said.

PF’S CHILUFYA MWEWA URGES ACC TO APPEAL LIVINGSTONE MAYOR’S ACQUITTAL

PF’S CHILUFYA MWEWA URGES ACC TO APPEAL LIVINGSTONE MAYOR’S ACQUITTAL.

‎OPPOSITION Patriotic Front member Chilufya Mwewa says the judiciary should have given due regard to the findings of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in the case involving Livingstone Mayor Constance Muleabai.

‎Speaking at a media briefing, Mr. Mwewa said that although the judgement was in favour of Ms. Muleabai, it was important for the courts to respect and uphold the findings of the ACC, which he believes conducted a thorough investigation.

‎He has since urged the Commission to consider appealing against the judgement, arguing that failure to do so risks protecting wrongdoing at the expense of the public interest.

‎Mr. Mwewa further stated that disregarding investigative findings undermines the integrity of the country’s investigative institutions and amounts to a disservice to the nation.

‎Ms. Muleabai was on 2nd February 2026 acquitted by the Livingstone Magistrate Court of all charges after the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations against her.

Pep Guardiola criticises Donald Trump over unlawful ki!lings by ICE agents

Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola has criticised US President Donald Trump over unlawful k!llings by ICE agents.

In a remarkable press conference, the City boss criticised the Trump administration after the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis, having earlier had his say on the wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan.

‘Look what happened in the United States of America, Renee Good and (intensive care nurse) Alex Pretti have been killed,’ the 55-year-old said when asked what was behind his decision to speak up on political issues.

‘Imagine the NHS, five six people around him, go on the grass and 10 shots. Tell me how you can defend that?’

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was the United Arab Emirates’ representative on Trump’s newly formed Board of Peace at Davos last month, an organisation designed to resolve conflicts that also affords the USA significant decision-making power.

Al Mubarak was part of a delegation that visited the White House following Trump’s inauguration last year.

Last month, the Jewish Representative Council accused Guardiola of ‘putting the lives of British Jews in danger’ in the wake of ‘shameful’ remarks around Gaza and wrote to Al Mubarak asking why their manager had not condemned the terrorist attack on a local synagogue.

Talking broadly about geopolitics, Guardiola said yesterday: ‘Never, ever in the history of humanity have we had the information in front of our eyes more clearly than now.

‘The genocide in Palestine, what happened in Ukraine, what happened in Russia, what happened all around the world — in Sudan, everywhere. What happened in front of us? Do you want to see it? It’s our problems as human beings. It’s our problems.

‘Is there someone here who is not affected every single day? For me, it hurts me. If it was the opposite (political) side, it would hurt me. Killing thousands of innocent people, it hurts me. It’s no more complicated than that. Do something wrong, go to jail.

‘I have a lot of friends from many, many countries, but when you have an idea and you need to defend (it) and you have to kill thousands of people (to do that) I’m sorry, I will stand up.’ Protest groups have called on City’s owner and UAE vice president Sheikh Mansour to be held to account for the conflict in Sudan and have twice demonstrated outside the Etihad Stadium in recent months.

The Sudanese government accused the UAE of being ‘complicit in genocide’, something the UAE strongly denies. The UAE this week pledged $20million in humanitarian aid to the region.

Guardiola added: ‘People who have to (leave) their countries, in the sea and then go on a boat to get rescued. Don’t ask if he is right or wrong, rescue him. We can reach the moon, we can do everything. But still right now, we kill each other, for what? For what? It is about a human being. Protecting human life is the only thing we have.’

US deploys troops to Nigeria to boost fight against Terrorism

0

The United States has confirmed the deployment of a small team of military personnel to Nigeria, marking the first official acknowledgment that U.S. forces are now on the ground in the West African nation amid rising insecurity.

General Dagvin R.M. Anderson said the move followed his meeting with Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, in Rome late last year.

The top general said the US team was sent after both countries agreed that more needed to be done to combat the terrorist threat in West Africa.

“That has led to increased collaboration between our nations, to include a small U.S. team that brings some unique capabilities from the United States in order to augment what Nigeria has been doing for several years,” General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, head of the US military’s Africa Command AFRICOM, told journalists during a press briefing on Tuesday.

It is unclear when the team arrived in Nigeria, but they are expected to bring specialized capabilities in intelligence and planning to support Nigerian forces’ efforts against extremist groups.

The deployment of military officers marks the latest development following the U.S. airstrikes carried out on December 25 last year against an Islamic State-affiliated group

Jill Biden’s ex-husband charged with first- degree murd£r of new wife

US former first lady Jill Biden’s ex-husband has been arrested and charged with murd£r in the de@th of his current wife.

William Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody Monday and is facing a charge of first-degree murder in the de@th of Linda Stevenson, according to a grand jury indictment filed in Delaware.

New Castle County police did not provide details on the death, but an initial release had noted that officers responded to a domestic dispute on Dec. 28 at a residence in the Wilmington area.

Linda Stevenson was found unresponsive in the living room and d!ed despite lifesaving measures by officers at the scene. The press release at the time said that her body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

In Linda Stevenson’s obituary, the 64-year old was described by loved ones as “deeply family-oriented,” and a big Philadelphia Eagles fan. It also said she founded a small bookkeeping business in the final years of her life.

A cause of death was not included in the statement on William Stevenson’s arrest. The grand jury’s indictment Monday was the result of an “extensive weekslong investigation” into the de@th, police said.

William Stevenson is currently in custody at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail, police said. It’s unclear if he has retained an attorney

No Scripture Says A Child Of God Cannot Have a Tattoo – Nigerian Pastor Who Recently Got One, Kingsley Okonkwo

Kingsley Okonkwo is one of the most popular preachers in Nigeria, widely loved for his opinions on romantic relationships.

The Pastor recently celebrated his 50th birthday in a manner that received backlash from all angles.

In Africa, people who have tattoos on their bodies are judged not for their actions but for their looks alone, and aside from that, most Christians have been made to believe that no member of the religion must use ink on their body.

Believers and non-believers still overlook the norms of the community to draw tattoos, but there are some people the society holds in high esteem, so expectations from them are high.

Pastors are one of these groups, but Kingsley Okonkwo has exempted himself after getting a tattoo on his 50th birthday.

Okonkwo’s action has attracted backlash, but he is defending his action in a recent interview.

According to Mr. Kingsley, there is no scripture in the Bible that says no child of God can have a tattoo on his body, but people want to crucify him for no valid reason.

The criticism from the public never ceases because people expect him to live a decent life, as most of his young followers are following his teachings and lifestyle.

He has challenged all his critics to come up with different scriptures that speak against tattoos or remain silent.

Student jailed for 3 months in Hong Kong for hiring impostor to take TOEFL

0

We often see students coming up with unusual ways to pass their exams, but one case in Hong Kong has shocked many for crossing the line into fraud.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a 22-year-old Chinese student has been jailed for three months after paying an impostor to take an English proficiency test on her behalf.

The student, Huang Xinyi from Fujian province, submitted the fake result to Lingnan University in Hong Kong to meet her graduation requirements.

Zero tolerance for fraud:
The case was heard at Tuen Mun Court on Monday. Magistrate David Chum Yau-fong said a jail term was necessary to send a strong warning, as similar cheating cases have increased in recent years.

“Education resources are wasted unnecessarily to conduct verifications because some students are using various means to deceive their schools. This is also unfair to other students.” Chum said.

Xinyi admitted she paid US$300 for a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) certificate in May 2024, even though she did not sit the exam herself.

She told police she had failed to reach the required score in four earlier TOEFL and IELTS tests. Her degree course required a minimum TOEFL score of 87 or an IELTS score of 6.5 to graduate.

Hired a fraudster:
Xinyi also travelled to Cambodia to retake the test, believing it would be easier there. On the exam day, she claimed she felt unwell and hired a fraudster outside the test centre to take the exam in her place.

When Lingnan University questioned the result, Xinyi said she had changed the photo on the report because she did not like how she looked.

However, after the university contacted the US-based Educational Testing Service, which runs the TOEFL, the fraud was confirmed. Xinyi later admitted to cheating.

The court heard that Xinyi had applied for a master’s programme in mid-2024 even though she knew she had not met the English requirement. A probation officer said her regret was not genuine and came only from fear of jail.

Although her lawyer asked for a lighter sentence, the court rejected the request. The magistrate reduced the original five-month term to three months because she pleaded guilty and cooperated with the university’s disciplinary process.

Social media fumes as videos of an alleged child marriage circulates online

We thought children marriage was a thing of the past until a recent video from the Nothern part of Nigeria proved us wrong.

A viral video circulating online has caused an uproar and controversy about child marriage as people expressed their anger

The marriage, which may probably be an arranged marriage was between a girl child and a man who might be 30-40 years her senior.

In the video, a young girl (probably 10 years or younger) is seen dressed as the bride in what is clearly a traditional marriage.

She dances majestically holding a cup which she offers to an older man to drink from. The man obliges and drinks from the cup.

Per tradition, that how marriage ceremonies are conducted in some parts of Nigeria. The video took a dark turn when she leaned in to kiss the man.

Several Nigerians have expressed their discomfort, calling on authorities and law enforcers to intervene and save the young girl.

One user alleged that the whole thing was molestation. Others went as far as raining insults and curses on the man.

Heated X spat erupts as Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman clash over Epstein

0

Jeffrey Epstein’s shadow continues to loom over the tech world as Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman engage in a war of words on X. Musk kicked off the exchange by claiming that Epstein unsuccessfully used Hoffman’s name to lure him into his circle. Hoffman, however, dismissed this narrative as a “disgusting” excuse, alleging that Musk was actually “begging” to visit the island and was searching for high-profile parties.

What did Elon Musk tweet?
“This is how I knew so long ago that Reid Hoffman went to Epstein’s island. Epstein used Reid being there to try to get me to go, not realizing that it would have the opposite effect,” he shared, along with a screenshot.

How did Reid Hoffman respond?
The LinkedIn co-founder lashed out at Musk, accusing him of trying to cover up his involvement with Epstein.

“Give us a break: If you cared about the victims as you say, you’d stop making false accusations to cover your ass and start using your $220m of influence with President Trump to get justice for the victims,” Hoffman tweeted.

He continued, “Instead, you’re focused on comparing my visit fundraising for MIT to your begging to go to his island (which happened TWO YEARS before the screenshot you shared), and helicoptering over to Epstein looking for the “wildest party.” You lied about this to everyone for over a decade, and now your excuse (it’s disgusting, by the way) is that you could get young girls without Epstein?”

Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman feud:
Though Elon Musk was the CEO of PayPal and Hoffman was its chief operating officer more than 20 years ago, their political and cultural paths diverged after the company was sold to eBay.

The online feud between the duo began when Musk linked Reid Hoffman’s name to the Epstein files.

While appearing on Eric Newcomer’s podcast last December, the LinkedIn co-founder revealed that he once spent a night on Epstein’s island, but added that it was in connection with MIT fundraising efforts.

Earlier, in another 2025 interview with BBC Radio 4, he addressed his feud with Elon Musk, calling it “one-sided”.

“Well, so actually, it’s more his beef with me for having made OpenAI successful with his departure,” Hoffman said. “Because he left saying, you know, ‘You’re all a bunch of jackasses and you’ll fail,’ and I helped them succeed.”

Guess who is not in Epstein files? Just guess

Guess who is not on the Epstein files? Just guess.

After years of condemning my goat as a weirdo for having many wives turns out the moral police were in fact sleeping with young girls and running sex rings.

At least my King was marrying the girls and giving them the stability of family while the white ‘civilised’ Jewish and Christian rapists were just passing girls around for fun.

Percy Simelane must not play and issue a statement condemning these weirdos because they surely would be doing so if the roles were reversed.

Or is it too early to celebrate?

Longevity doctor Peter Attia hung out with Epstein while his baby was in ICU, wife pleaded for him to return

0

Celebrity doctor Peter Attia once hung out with Jeffrey Epstein even as his infant son fought for his life in the ICU, the latest tranche of the Epstein files have revealed. Attia, the Canadian-American author who helped popularise the longevity craze, communicated regularly with the convicted sex offender — his name appears more than 1,700 times in the documents related to the Epstein investigation

Who is Peter Attia?
Peter Attia is a physician, founder, author and researcher widely recognized for his work in longevity medicine. He is the founder of Early Medical, a private clinic. Attia has a degree from Stanford University School of Medicine.

This week, he stepped down from his role as Chief Science Officer at David Protein, a company that makes high-protein nutrition bars, after his correspondence with Epstein was released by the US Department of Justice. Attia’s own longevity startup Biograph has not yet commented on the matter.

Attia is best known as the author of Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity — a book where he himself confessed that he refused to return to San Diego to be with his family after his baby collapsed.

Emails exchanged between Attia and Epstein now reveal that the two made plans to meet in New York even as Attia’s young son fought for his life in San Diego.

Peter Attia’s account of son’s collapse
Attia revealed in his book Outlive that on July 11, 2017, he received a call from his wife Jill, informing him that their infant son Ayrton had stopped breathing. Jill told Attia that she was in the ambulance with Ayrton, on her way to the hospital.

“For some reason, he had suddenly stopped breathing and fallen unconscious. His eyes were completely rolled back in their sockets and he was lifeless and blue, with no heartbeat,” Attia wrote.

“When Jill called me from the ambulance, I was in New York, in a taxi on Fifty-Fourth Street, on my way to dinner,” Attia wrote. “After she finished telling me the story, I just said, without a shred of emotion, ‘Okay, call me when you get to the hospital, so I can talk to the doctors in the ICU.’”

Wife pleaded for him to return
Attia said that his wife hung up on him. “It’s obvious why she was upset: our son had nearly died, and the right thing for me to say, the only thing to say, was that I was getting the next flight home,” he acknowledged in his 2023 book.

The realisation came several years too late. By his own admission, Attia said that Jill stayed alone in the hospital with their son for four days in 2017 while he completed ‘important work’ in New York.

“She pleaded with me to come home,” he wrote. “Ayrton’s cardiac arrest happened on a Tuesday, but I did not come home to San Diego until Friday of the following week. Ten days later.”

Attia made plans to meet Epstein
Newly-released emails have now revealed that the day after he received news of his son’s cardiac arrest, Peter Attia made plans with Jeffrey Epstein.

On July 12, 2017, Jeffrey Epstein emailed Attia to ask, “can you do before 10 am ?tomrow [sic].”

“Sure.What time?” Attia replied.

When Epstein suggested 9:30 am, Attia answered: “Sure. I can come earlier, also, if you have a hard stop at 10. Let me know.”

This was not the only communication between the two — they wrote to each other for years, often exchanging crude jokes.

MrBeast reacts to Elon Musk’s ‘SpaceX and xAI are now one company’ tweet

0

Elon Musk has officially consolidated his empire, announcing that SpaceX and xAI have merged into a single entity. The merger values the enlarged entity at $1.25 trillion. The news immediately went viral, prompted in part by a cheeky response from YouTube star MrBeast regarding the new ownership of the social media platform X.

“To the stars! @SpaceX& @xAI are now one company,” Elon Musk tweeted in response to an official post by xAI. MrBeast took the opportunity to share witty tweet.

“So I’m now posting on a SpaceX owned site? lol,” he posted.

Social media reacts:
The post has prompted a series of reactions on social media. An individual joked, “Will you do the first YouTube video on Mars?” Another commented, “This isn’t a merger. It’s the first time a civilization has: A global nervous system (X), sensory organs beyond Earth (SpaceX), and a reasoning layer that updates in real time (xAI) We’re not watching a company grow. We’re watching a species build reflexes.”

A third expressed, “Wait so if something happens to Elon and you’re the owner of X. Does that mean Space X or just twitter.” The individual referred to tweeted by Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson where he asked Musk if he could be the next CEO of X (formerly Twitter).

A fourth wrote, “Technically, the merger is between SpaceX and xAI (the AI company behind Grok), not directly involving X as a platform. That said, it’s intriguing to see how these ecosystems might integrate further in the future.”

Why the merger?
According to a statement signed off by Elon Musk xAI joined SpaceX to “Accelerate Humanity’s Future.”

The statement continued, “SpaceX has acquired xAI to form the most ambitious, vertically-integrated innovation engine on (and off) Earth, with AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications and the world’s foremost real-time information and free speech platform. This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI’s mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe and extend the light of consciousness to the stars.”

Jeffrey Epstein had a secret child 15 years ago, email from Sarah Ferguson claims

0

Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein may have had a secret child about 15 years ago, according to a newly surfaced email sent by Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Britain’s former Prince Andrew.

The email, dated September 21, 2011, is part of a fresh release of more than 3 million pages of documents by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) related to Epstein and his associates. At the time the email was sent, Epstein had already been convicted of sex with an underage girl.

“Don’t know if you’re still on this bbm but have heard from The Duke that you have had a baby boy,” Ferguson wrote, according to the released files.

“Even though you never kept in touch, I still am here with love, friendship, and congratualtions [sic] on your baby boy. Sarah xx,” she added.

In another message, Ferguson claimed that she had not been aware that Epstein was about to become a father and noted that he had “disappeared.”

According to a report by the New York Post, Epstein’s last known girlfriend was Karyna Shuliakand, and he wanted to leave her his private island, along with $50 million and his Upper East Side townhouse. Epstein signed his will on August 8, 2019, just two days before he was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell.

The DOJ clarified that the newly released files were compiled from 5 primary sources, including the Florida and New York cases against Epstein, the New York case against Ghislaine Maxwell, investigations into Epstein’s death, a Florida case involving a former butler, multiple FBI probes, and an Office of Inspector General investigation.

‘I was mistaken’: LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman admits he met Jeffrey Epstein after 2015 despite earlier claims

In 2019, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman told news outlet Axios that his last interaction with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein took place in 2015. He has now gone back on this claim, admitting that he met Epstein at least six times after that. At least three of those meetings were in-person.

Hoffman has maintained that all his meetings with Epstein were in connection with fundraising efforts for the MIT Media Lab.

Reid Hoffman’s clarification
In a post shared on the social media platform X this morning, Hoffman said he “regrets” his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who ran a sex trafficking ring targeting underage girls.

“I only knew Jeffrey Epstein because of a fundraising relationship with MIT, which I very much regret,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman’s last meeting with Epstein
In a 2019 interview with Axios, the LinkedIn co-founder said that he last met Epstein in 2015 at the request of Joi Ito, the former director of MIT Media Lab.

Hoffman has now admitted that he met Epstein several times after that — including in 2018, just a year before his interview with Axios. Epstein died in prison while awaiting trial in 2019. Authorities ruled his death a suicide.

Hoffman said he checked his calendar entries and realised that he had met Epstein at least six times after 2015.

“In 2019 I told Axios the last meeting I had with him was in 2015 but I was mistaken, as according to calendar entries I have become aware there were additional fundraising meetings in 2016 and 2018. These meetings were all coordinated by Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab,” he said on X.

Five of these meetings took place between April and July 2016. The last took place on March 24, 2018.

“I have done multiple calendar searches, and if I find any other meetings, I will continue to share them,” said Hoffman.

He reiterated his sympathy for Epstein’s victims at the end. “The victims of Epstein’s abhorrent and vile actions deserve all the information they are seeking, and I continue to call on President Trump to deliver that for them,” he said.

What Hoffman had said in 2019
In 2019, Hoffman had expressed regret for his role in helping Epstein “repair his reputation” after his conviction.

“My few interactions with Jeffrey Epstein came at the request of Joi Ito, for the purposes of fundraising for the MIT Media Lab,” the LinkedIn co-founder had said.

“Prior to these interactions, I was told by Joi that Epstein had cleared the MIT vetting process, which was the basis for my participation.

“My last interaction with Epstein was in 2015. Still, by agreeing to participate in any fundraising activity where Epstein was present, I helped to repair his reputation and perpetuate injustice. For this, I am deeply regretful.

“Recent reporting has made clear allegations of willful deception across multiple departments at MIT. Wherever this is true, this is completely unacceptable and needlessly tarnishes the work of MIT faculty and students. I support a thorough, independent investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s connections and am hopeful that the investigation announced by President Rafael Reif exposes the flaws in the existing process and establishes new clear safeguards moving forward,” he had said in 2019.

American millionaire recalls feeling sick to his stomach after 10-minute Epstein meeting

American millionaire Bryan Johnson has opened up about a ten-minute Zoom encounter with Jeffrey Epstein that left him feeling “sick to his stomach.” Despite the meeting being framed as a professional introduction regarding neuroscience, Johnson recalls an immediate, overwhelming sense of dread. Writing on X, the tech entrepreneur described Epstein as the most “intuitively evil” person he had ever met, explaining that a visceral “gut feeling” led him to cut all ties with the former financier years before Epstein’s crimes became public.

“8 years ago I met Epstein via zoom. A mutual contact put us in touch as I was building my brain interface company Kernel and he had supposedly done some neuroscience stuff at MIT,” the millionaire recalled.

Explaining, he added, “After a ten minute video call I immediately called the person who put us in contact and told him that Epstein seemed like a very dark person. I felt sick to my stomach. I also told him I that never wanted to speak to him again. I remember this so clearly because I knew nothing about him but weirdly, intuitively, something was deeply wrong. Being in his proximity felt dangerous. Despite having nothing to go off of, I never interacted with him again and came to find out years later that he’d had a f**ked up past.”

In another tweet, he recounted the “unfiltered” version of the meeting, adding that he only remembered Epstein wearing a blue shirt.

Johnson expressed, “There was an obvious incentive for him to pursue a connection with me and at the end of the call he wanted to stay in touch. Instead, the moment the call ended, it was an immediate no. A hard, instinctive ‘f**k no’. I was genuinely relieved when the call ended.”

He described the former financier as the “most intuitively evil person,” he had ever met. “It was visceral.”

Addressing whether he had knowledge about Epstein’s crimes, the millionaire clarified, “That’s the thing, it wasn’t part of my algo to check if someone being intro’d to me was a registered sex offender. He also wasn’t presented as some obvious outcast. He was wrapped in credibility, positioned by others as relevant and important. Epstein wasn’t some fringe guy who showed up randomly. He was embedded in institutional credibility. It turns out even after he was a convicted sex offender, MIT and Harvard were still engaging with him. He was always surrounded by people who made him seem legitimate.”

He added, “That interaction was the first and last time I interacted with him. I feel you all. It’s terrifying.”

Did Johnson offer to meet Epstein in person?
Social media had a lot to say. An individual questioned, “You’re asking to meet him in person”, while sharing a screenshot from the newly released file dump.

Addressing the allegation, Johnson replied, “This was pre-call…I was offering in person because I was traveling through NY. It ended up being a call (first and last time I interacted w him). I am with you friends… terrifying in hindsight.”

Why Opposition Tonse Alliances Keep Failing in Zambia

🇿🇲 VIEWPOINT | Why Opposition Alliances Keep Failing in Zambia

Renowned Lusaka lawyer and Movement for National Renewal (MNR) leader John Sangwa has offered one of the clearest diagnoses yet of why opposition alliances in Zambia repeatedly collapse under their own weight.

Speaking on the EMV Verified Podcast on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, Sangwa argued that Zambia’s political architecture itself makes durable alliances almost impossible, not because of personalities alone, but because the system provides no legal glue to hold them together.

At the centre of his argument is a structural gap. Zambia allows virtually anyone to form a political party and contest elections, but provides no binding legal framework to regulate how alliances operate, how they resolve disputes, or how power-sharing agreements are enforced.

“The absence of a legal framework and the multi-party character of Zambia prevent successful political alliances and electoral pacts,” Sangwa said.

He explained that most opposition alliances in Zambia operate purely on memoranda of understanding (MOUs) that carry no legal force. Once disputes arise, there is no authority empowered to enforce compliance or arbitrate disagreements.

“There is no legal framework to provide for respect for a memorandum of understanding signed in an alliance that would give it legal effect,” he said.

Sangwa contrasted Zambia’s situation with jurisdictions such as Kenya, where political alliances are regulated by law. In Kenya, coalition agreements are deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties, giving them legal standing and enforceability.

“In Kenya, MOUs are deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties and they have legal effect,” he noted.

By contrast, Sangwa warned that any opposition alliance formed ahead of the 2026 elections would, in practice, rest on little more than goodwill.

“If opposition parties succeed in forming alliances before 2026, it will be based on a gentleman’s agreement,” he said, adding that such arrangements are inherently fragile.

Sangwa located part of the solution in the stalled Political Parties Bill, which he said had envisioned a clearer legal regime for alliances and electoral pacts. He cited Section 24 of the proposed legislation, which provides for the recognition and regulation of electoral pacts and political alliances.

Until such a framework exists, he argued, alliances will continue to fracture at moments of pressure, particularly when leadership contests, funding, or candidate selection arise.

Beyond legal mechanics, Sangwa also raised concerns about the substance of opposition unity efforts. He said he struggled with alliances whose central organising principle was simply the removal of the UPND government, rather than the articulation of alternative policies.

He stated bluntly that while the UPND has failed Zambians in certain respects, opposition politics has not sufficiently demonstrated what would be done differently.

“The initiatives are based on removing the UPND government, where policies are not the driving force,” he said.

Sangwa further observed that Zambia has repeatedly failed to internalise lessons from its own political history. He pointed to the country’s electoral transitions in 1963, 1991, 2011, and 2021, noting that despite multiple candidates on the ballot, presidential contests ultimately consolidated into two-horse races.

“We have not learnt anything from the details of electoral pacts or alliances of 1963, 1991, 2011 and 2021,” he said.

In his assessment, this pattern reflects voter behaviour rather than elite negotiation. When alliances fail or fragment, the electorate tends to resolve the contest on its own terms.

“The failure by the opposition leaves the wisdom to the people,” Sangwa said, citing the decisive outcomes of both the 2011 and 2021 elections

However, he acknowledged one constitutional factor that continues to exert pressure on opposition parties: the 50 percent plus one requirement for presidential victory. That threshold, he said, makes fragmentation costly and will inevitably force opposition actors to seek some form of convergence.

“The constitutional provision requiring a presidential candidate to win with 50 percent plus one will force the opposition to come together,” Sangwa said.

Still, his central warning remained unchanged. Without a legal framework to anchor alliances, unity efforts will remain vulnerable to ego, mistrust, and collapse.

Practically, Sangwa’s intervention reframes Zambia’s opposition problem as less about personalities and more about institutional design. Until alliances are backed by law rather than sentiment, unity will remain temporary, contested, and easily undone.

FERGIE SHUTTERS CHARITY AFTER NEW EPSTEIN EMAILS: “JUST MARRY ME”

Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew’s ex-wife and the Duchess of York, is closing her charity following fresh revelations from the Epstein files showing she sent him emails calling him a “legend” and writing “just marry me” in 2010.

Other messages show her asking when he’d “employ” her and pledging “my friendship is steadfast to the end, even after the body is cold.”

This all happened after Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea for soliciting prostitution from a minor, and a year before she publicly said she’d “never have anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again.”

Stakeholders, SADC is here, Go and Submit

Threats to a Democratic, Free, Fair, Transparent and Elections in 2026

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC) is undertaking a Post-Election Review Mission to Zambia from 3rd to 12th February 2026.

The Mission is in line with Article 7.3 of the Revised SADC Principles and Guidelines
Governing Democratic Elections (2021), which mandates SEAC to conduct post-election assessments subsequent to each electoral cycle.

During the Mission, SEAC will hold consultative meetings with key electoral
Commission of Zambia, Civil ociety
stakeholders, including Electoral Organizations, political parties, and Cooperating Partners to assess progress in
implementing recommendations emanating from previous election observation missions.

It’s important that stakeholders use the opportunity to submit and express concerns that Zambia’s chances of holding credible, democratic, free,transparent and fair elections are slim because;

  1. President Hakainde Hichilema’s systematic attack on democracy.
  2. He has passed draconian legislations that have taken away freedom of expression, information, of the press and rights to association and provides for extreme punishment including life in imprisonment for certain types of speech offences.
  3. He has illegally passed constitutional amendments that have significantly altered the electoral system and expanded Parliament from 165 seats to 281 seats.
  4. He has wiped out independence of the wings of Government with Speaker of the National Assembly and Chief Justice acting as lapdogs to State House machinations.

a) See how Nelly Mutti has been made to abuse her office, made illegal changes on Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, passed an illegal ConstitutionalBill and used her presiding powers to frequently punish members of the Opposition with suspensions and expulsions.

b) See how the Judicary has been weaponized to punish members of the Opposition and actively facilitate the theft, kill and destroy the largest political party in Zambia.

  1. The dangerous activities occuring at the Ministry of Home Affairs, where;
    a) legally registered Office Bearers are being ousted and reolacing them with stooges, and

b) how the Ministry ran voter suppression scheme where NRCs were issued enmass to areas where the UPND enjoys politicsl support and failed to issue NRCs to areas deemed popular to the Opposition.

  1. The fears at the Electoral Commission of Zambia where UPND Cadres; Mwangala Zaloumis and Mcdonald Chipenzi arenrunning the entity and technical team led ECZ Director and deep concerns over the recruitment of Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro and Dr. Collins Kachaka.

OPPOSITION UNITY A MYTH-JOHN SANGWA

OPPOSITION UNITY A MYTH-JOHN SANGWA

..the absence of a legal framework and the multi-party character of Zambia prevent succesful political alliances and electoral pacts..,

Renowned Lusaka Lawyer and Leader of the Movement for National Renewal (MNR) has stated that opposition alliances and opposition unity have failed to work in Zambia.

He stated that the current environment where anyone can form a political party and is legally eligible to participate paused the biggest challenge.

He said the other weakness was that there was no legal framework to provide for respect for memorandum and of Understanding (MOU) signed in an alliance that would provide for legal effect.
Sangwa was speaking when he was featured on the EMV Veriefied podcast on Tuesday 3rd February 2026.

He said that until such a  time that a legal framework existed as envisioned in the Political Party Bill, it will continue to be difficult for Alliance unity to work

He said Section 24 provided of the Bill provided for electoral pacts and political alliances.

He has an example where a legal framework existed in Kenya, where the MOUs are deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties and had legal effect.

He said if the Opposition Parties succeeded in forming alliances before the 2026 elections, it would be based on Gentleman’s Agreement and the process remained

He also stated that he had difficulties with the current arrangements and initiatives based on the removal of the UPND government and where policies were not the driving force.

He said the UPND has failed the people of Zambia, but alternative programs and different policies.

He said the country has not learnt anything on the details of electoral pacts or alliances of 1963, 1991, 2011 and 2021.

He said the failure by the opposition would leave the wisdom to the people as shown in both 2011 and 2021 despite having numerous candidates, the race was a two-horse race.

He however said the constitutional provisions that required a presidential candidate need to win with a majority victory of 50%+1 , a matter that will force the Opposition to come together.

HYPOCRITES! JUSTICE MOCKED: UPND’S LIVINGSTONE MAYOR MUKELABAI WALKS FREE AFTER COURT CONFIRMS K180,000 BRIBE SHE GOT- Kasonde Mwenda C-EFF President

HYPOCRITES! JUSTICE MOCKED: UPND’S LIVINGSTONE MAYOR MUKELABAI WALKS FREE AFTER COURT CONFIRMS K180,000 BRIBE SHE GOT- Kasonde Mwenda C-EFF President

The acquittal of Livingstone Mayor Constance Mukelabai in a corruption matter is a national embarrassment, a travesty of justice, and a dangerous confirmation that Zambia is now governed by selective application of the law under Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND leadership.

In a shocking but revealing judgement, the Livingstone Magistrate Court expressly established that the accused, in her official capacity as Mayor, corruptly obtained a bribe amounting to K180,000.00 in exchange for securing a 100 percent remission of property rates owed to the Livingstone City Council by Zamnuka Farm Limited, a private entity.

The Court stated:
“The State has established that the accused, in her capacity as Mayor of Livingstone, did corruptly obtain a cash gratification in the sum of K180,000.00…”

Despite this clear finding of fact, the accused was acquitted — not because corruption did not occur, but because the prosecution allegedly failed to prove the precise route through which the money reached her.

This judgement does not uphold justice; it reduces justice to a technical escape route for the politically protected

The Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012 leaves no ambiguity. Corruption does not require direct hand-to-hand exchange. The law criminalizes gratification obtained directly or indirectly, through third parties, in conjunction with others, and for personal or political advantage. The facts as established by the Court clearly satisfy these statutory thresholds.

The position of the law according to the
Anti-Corruption Act, 2012 Act 3 of 2012(19): says- Corrupt practices by, or with, public officers include:
(1) A public officer who, by oneself, or by or in conjunction with, any other person, corruptly solicits, accepts or obtains, or agrees to accept or attempts to receive or obtain, from any person for oneself
or for any other person, any gratification as an inducement or reward for doing or forbearing to do, or for having done or forborne to do, anything in relation to any matter or transaction, actual or
proposed, with which any public body is or may be concerned, commits an offence.

The above is what exactly happened in this case, Mayor Mukelabai received a bribe of K189, 000 which is a crime but today she is free.

What Zambia witnessed in this case is not a failure of evidence, but a failure of political will and judicial courage.

This becomes even more disturbing when contrasted with the treatment of Hon. Nickson Chilangwa, a Patriotic Front Member of Parliament, who was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for an alleged arson case despite not being present at the scene of the crime.

In the Chilangwa case:
* No direct evidence placed him at the scene
* No material proof established his participation
* Yet the courts moved swiftly and decisively to convict and imprison him

In the Mukelabai case:
* The Court itself confirmed that a bribe was corruptly obtained
* The amount and purpose of the bribe were clearly established
* Yet the accused walked free

This contrast alone demolishes any claim that justice in Zambia is blind.

Under President  Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND, Zambia has descended into an era where:

* Opposition figures are jailed on weak, circumstantial, or politically convenient cases
* UPND officials are shielded even when courts establish corrupt conduct

This is lawfare — the systematic use of state institutions, particularly the judiciary, to punish political opponents and protect political allies.

Our prisons are increasingly filled with opposition leaders, while corruption within the ruling party is excused, sanitized, or procedurally forgiven. This is not the rule of law. This is rule by political affiliation.

As public resources are looted and abused, Zambians suffer:

* Hospitals lack basic functionality
* Poverty deepens
* Public trust in institutions collapses

Yet those responsible face no consequences — so long as they belong to the ruling party.

To the people of Zambia:
This moment must not be normalized.

The 2026 General Election is a referendum on justice, equality before the law, and national integrity. A country cannot survive when guilt is proven but punishment is optional for the politically connected.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) stand for equal justice, accountability, and the uncompromising application of the law— regardless of name, position, or party.

Vote change. Vote EFF.
Zambia deserves leadership that respects justice, not manipulates it.

In 2026, Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND must go.

Wherever we want to go our feet will take us there.

COURT SETS FRIDAY TO RULE ON MALANJI’S BAIL PENDING APPEAL

COURT SETS FRIDAY TO RULE ON MALANJI’S BAIL PENDING APPEAL

By Nelson Zulu

Lusaka Acting Chief Resident Magistrate Irene Wishimanga has set Friday this week to rule on whether to grant former foreign affairs minister Joe Malanji bail pending appeal or not.

Mr. Malanji is serving a 4-year prison sentence for acquiring properties established to be proceeds of crime, including two helicopters and houses in Silverest, among others, linked to funds allocated for a Zambian chancery in turkey.

Magistrate Wishimanga set the ruling date after the state opposed Mr. Malanji’s bail application, arguing that the mere lodging of an appeal does not entitle him to bail as of right and that he has not demonstrated delay in hearing the appeal.

The state added that bail pending appeal is an exceptional remedy, that the economic and financial crimes court operates on a fast-track timetable, and releasing Mr. Malanji is prejudicial to the prosecution.

However, the defence argued that the appeal raises novel points of law, undermining the conviction, and that the trial magistrate misapplied corporate personality principles.

They claim factual findings linking Mr. Malanji to the source of funds were unsupported by the record, contend there is a realistic prospect of success on appeal, and that Mr. Malanji faces serving a substantial portion of his sentence if bail is refused.

GOVERNANCE EXPERT SAYS SADC POST-ELECTION REVIEW TOO LATE

GOVERNANCE EXPERT SAYS SADC POST-ELECTION REVIEW TOO LATE

By Chamuka Shalubala

Governance expert Reuben Lifuka has described the visit by the SADC Electoral Advisory Council to conduct a post-election review of Zambia’s 2016 and 2021 general elections as too late to have meaningful impact.

Mr. Lifuka is of the view that conducting a post-election mission nearly four years after the 2021 polls is misplaced, stating that had the review been conducted earlier, it would have given the UPND administration an opportunity to address some of the flaws experienced in the 2021 general elections.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Lifuka is calling on SADC to review its own electoral protocols, arguing that such an important assessment should not be undertaken so late in the electoral cycle.

Despite describing the mission as delayed, Mr. Lifuka says it remains important for the Electoral Advisory Council to genuinely listen to the views of all stakeholders it will engage, noting that the region must move away from the perception that regional bodies only conduct reviews for appearance’s sake.

He has also urged government to ensure that it acts on the recommendations that will be made by the Council, especially as the country has only a few months remaining before this year’s polls.

POLICE IG REQUESTS FOR A 4000 NEW RECRUITEES AS MWIMBU COMMISSIONS THE 2026 Electoral AND 2025-2031 SECURITY PLANS

POLICE IG REQUESTS FOR A 4000 NEW RECRUITEES AS MWIMBU COMMISSIONS THE 2026 Electoral AND 2025-2031 SECURITY PLANS.

By Francis Mulenda

Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba has request for a total of 4000 recruitment ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking at the double launch of 2026 electoral and 2025-2031 security plans, Musamba noted that the Zambia Police Service requires more officers in order to adquately re-enforce the security services ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Mr Musamba however re-assured the nation that the Zambia Police service remains steadfast in ensuring the peaceful, credible and neutral policing before, during and after the 2026 general elections.

And the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwimbu has reaffirmed government’s commitment towards enabling better condition for the police service.

The minister commended the polices service for their relentless approach in maintaining law and order in a professional manner that has evolved from unnecessary approach which may escalates further violence to  Morden techniques which brings about dialogue.

He noted that police recent professionalism has restored public confidence and trust between the police and the communities across the country.

He said the restoration of public confidence is in line with the Eighth National Development plan which seeks for a safer and secure Zambia for economic development.

He however called on the police unit to remain resolute in fighting the evolving crime by embracing modern technology. He further urged the men in uniform to remain Discipline and maintain ethical standards while performing their duties.

Britons who identify as l£sbian, g@y or bis£xual have a lower life expectancy than those who identify as straight

Britons who identify as lesbian, g@y or bis£xu@l (LGB+) have a lower life expectancy than those who identify as straight or heteros£xual, official figures suggest.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) linked 2021 census data to de@th registrations to estimate life expectancy according to s£xual orientation. The analysis found that a 20-year-old LGB+ man in England and Wales can expect to live on average another 59.4 years.

A man of the same age identifying as heteros£xual is likely to live for an additional 60.7 years, more than 12 months longer, according to the data.

Life expectancy for women identifying with an LGB+ orientation was also lower when compared with women who identified as straight or heteros£xual.

A 20-year-old LGB+ woman can expect to live on average another 63.0 years, compared with 64.0 years for a heteros£xual woman, the analysis suggested.

It is the first time that life expectancy by sexual orientation has been estimated by the ONS.

The analysis used responses collected during the 2021 census, which included a voluntary question on s£xual orientation for people aged 16 and over.

As only people aged 16 and above were asked the s£xu@l orientation question in the census, life expectancy has been estimated from age 20.

The ONS said its findings were based on large samples with consistent patterns across age groups and previous research.

But it added it could not say from the analysis if s£xual orientation is a ‘contributing risk factor’ for shorter life expectancy.

The data also suggested that life expectancy for 20-year-olds identifying as gay or lesbian is an additional 59.3 years for men and 62.8 years for women, lower than the equivalent figures for heterosexuals (60.7 and 64.0 years respectively).

For those identifying as bisexual, the estimates are an additional 59.6 years for men and 62.9 years for women – again, lower than the figures for people identifying as straight.

Greg Ceely, ONS head of population life events, said: ‘For the first time, we have looked at how life expectancy can differ by s£xual orientation.

‘It shows people who identified as gay or lesbian had a slightly lower life expectancy than those identifying as straight or heteros£xual.

‘Life expectancy can be impacted by a range of factors, so we can’t tell from this analysis whether s£xual orientation is the driver of the difference seen.’
