ZAMBIA’S OBSESSION WITH REGULATION: A TOOL TO SUPPRESS CRITICAL VOICES

ZAMBIA’S OBSESSION WITH REGULATION: A TOOL TO SUPPRESS CRITICAL VOICES

By Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya

It is almost as if political leaders all read from the same manual book. Unfortunately, the book is a bit silly. This situation is the reason people must always find a way of being led by people who identify with them and are not so far from the real world. Granted, this is difficult because once elected, the system automatically alienates leaders from people, making them live a lie.

It seems it is almost impossible for political leaders to tell when they are being unreasonable and that is the start of the rot.

The current discussion on the need for government to regulate online media and especially podcasts may be new, but to a large extent brings back memories of how successive Zambian governments always find “innovative” ways to shut down the people’s voices.

In 2015, the Post Newspaper was shut down in the most uncommon manner. At this point, ZRA was owed millions of Kwachas, but the Post was not the only business owing. In fact, ZRA was facing a big problem with tax compliance that led to them creating an amnesty. In that year the Authority collected K29bn against the Parliament target of K31bn. The tax revenue to GDP ratio stood at 16.3 percent in 2015 compared to 16.6 percent in 2014.

The problems ZRA was facing were clearly bigger. ZRA needed reform and to relook their broader strategy. The country’s biggest private newspaper didn’t have to be closed; but let’s have it. Remember that the Post Newspaper was incredibly critical of Edgar Lungu and it would benefit him most if this Newspaper was off the streets.

April 9th, 2020, we saw the very draconian closure of privately owned Prime TV. Sources close to State House fondly recall how the closure of the TV channel was at the call of a higher power. Nothing to do with the said expired license. Agreed, Prime TV was careless to be critical of government and not have their paperwork in order; but we shouldn’t blame the victim here. Government at this point should have exercised wisdom and preserved theirs and the integrity of the country.

This is as typical as it gets. The Zambian government is happy to sit at the negotiating table with a foreign owned mining firm that has been evading tax, underpaying workers and failing to meet contractual obligations. They will go as far as finding a solution to this problem, but they won’t do the same for a Zambian owned business?

The truth is, it is much harder to rescue a privately owned media house in Zambia because it is much better for it to be closed; much better for the government.

We all know that how we share and get information has changed a lot. This change happened mainly because of two types of media: old media and new media.

New media, thanks to the internet and smartphones, is now easy for everyone to use around the world. This makes it much simpler for us to find information and entertainment, which is a big step forward for freedom of expression and getting information.

The recent intention by government to meddle in the business of private citizens’ social media postings sits at the very core of suppressing freedom of expression. In 2021, President Edgar Lungu signed the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Bill into law. This law was widely criticized because it meant sensoring the media and online space and ultimately stifling the freedoms of the people.

The UPND themselves were so opposed to this law that they promised to get rid of it. Cornelius Mweetwa was UPND Spokesperson, and he made it quite clear what their intentions were.

“We want to tell the nation that HH has committed to repeal the Cyber Security. That’s one of the things he will do ever. He has committed to that. Look! The freedoms of the people of this country have been invaded.”

There is never a need to “regulate” the freedoms of the people. A country like Zambia needs no new laws. Should there be a law that is applied differently when people are in the living room of their home and another when in the bedroom? The laws of this country are sufficient enough to prosecute a person that commits a crime online without the need to establish any new legislation.

When Chellah Tukuta defamed Dora Siliya on his Facebook page in 2020, the State didn’t need a new law to send him to jail. They used the long-standing charge of libel.

As Professor Rakesh Kumar puts it, social media is just a platform for expression. Holding the platform responsible for content, even if it’s clearly illegal, is like holding a transporter, restaurant owner, or cellphone network provider accountable for every discussion that happens using their services.

The fear of a heavily regulated country is that it provides a loophole for governments to oppress dissenting views; and if there’s one area we can all agree has a traceable record is how consistent Zambian governments are with this.

Online discussions reflect what’s already happening in society. If government enforces the rule of law more, people will have more freedom online and we won’t need as much regulation.

What’s next? That people must seek permission from the State before they share an opinion?

As the French proverb goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. You would think political leaders all read from the same handbook.

REGULATION OF PODCASTING MUST BE OPPOSED

REGULATION OF PODCASTING MUST BE OPPOSED
By SP MCC Faston Mwale

Government’s intention to control online publications and podcasting is a move in a wrong direction. To put it plainly, the move is not only retrogressive, repressive and backward but it is also a negation of democratic governance and a value subtraction on efforts to foster the promotion of freedom of expression. It is inconceivable that in this day and age, government is flirting with the idea to amend the Independent Broadcasting Act with a view to introduce podcast regulation and limiting online publication. The move must be energetically opposed because it offends the freedom of expression.

It is sufficiently clear that the beleaguered United Party for National Development government does not want people to talk about the mediocre governance that has plunged the country into an abyss of crises.

The looming hunger, poverty, the crippling loadshedding, the bane of leadership crisis, the escalating cost of living crisis are among the common themes of public conversation today and citizens must be guaranteed unihibited physical or digital space in which to articulate their views and perspectives on matters of common concen. Laws exist that could deal with any perceived infractions.

Today, there is a huge plethora of laws that inhibit the liberties of free expression. Instead of creating a climate of free speech, draconian pieces of law have only served to evoke an atmosphere of fear, docility, servility and subserviency. The cyber security and cybercrimes Act of 2021 is one of them.

As a consequence of the forgoing, a climate in which it is far more difficult to offer constructive criticism but in which it is a lot easier to praise and deify leaders has proliferated. This retrogressive state of affairs must be questioned and challenged by progressive minds. It is not easy, for example, to talk about the growing spate of corruption involving those in the upper layers of government without factoring a probable invitation to the police station for a harrowing quiz.

Attempts to enact new legislation or modifying the existing acts to purposely cure the systematized delusions of fear of the UPND government must be ruled out of order. The best remedy for the UPND is to develop the capacity to rationally handle rational criticism rather than seeking to concoct legislation against freedom of expression. The era of paternalistic politics in which leaders were idolized and fetishized as demigods is gone and gone beyond return. Leaders must be held accountable to their word. Progressive minds in parliament, ruling and opposition must coalesce and robustly repudiate any attempt to enact pieces of legislation designed to limit justifiable criticism of government.

Businessman Kasanda cannot claim legitimacy of his property – State

Businessman Kasanda cannot claim legitimacy of his property – State

THE State has retorted that gold dealer Shadreck Kasanda cannot claim that his wealth is as clean as the late KK’s handkerchief, before he is exonerated in investigations or criminal proceedings that may be instituted against him.

It says Article 16(2)(t) of the constitution allows law enforcement officers to seize property for purposes of investigations.

Kasanda has petitioned the State before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court seeking an order that it be compelled to give him back his fully furnished extravagant house in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill and posh vehicles seized by the DEC.

He argued that his house was acquired through legal means and the officers cannot grab it from him and deny him comfort.

Kasanda stated that after the gold gate scandal at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, DEC officers deprived him of his property rights when they seized his fancy house on suspicion, without concrete evidence.

The businessman lamented that his right to privacy was violated as the officers entered his premises without obtaining a search warrant from a magistrate.

Kasanda is seeking a declaration that the DEC has no powers to seize his house.

He wants the EFCC to declare that the confiscation of his house and cars was illegal.

In its answer to the petition the State says the purpose of seizing Kasanda’s Ibex Hill house and Porsch cars was to inquire into suspicions of tax evasion and money laundering, and does not amount to repossessing them as the property may later be returned to him depending on the outcome of the investigations.

The State says the search conducted at his house was within the law and officers of the Drug Enforcement Commission, executed the same with a search warrant which was issued pursuant to Section 52 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act no.35 of 2021.

“Officers from the DEC had reasonable grounds to suspect that on the petitioner’s premises, there was concealed or deposited property liable to seizure, hence moving in under the authority of the said search warrant,”the State submitted.

“Investigations revealed that there was an element of fraudulent dealing in minerals, and tax evasion on the part of Kasanda and his company, prompting the officers to believe that the property was derived or acquired from proceeds of crime, as fraudulent dealing in minerals without a license, and tax evasion are both predicate offences of money laundering.”

It added that it did not breach the law and Kasanda is not entitled to any of the reliefs sought

Trump wants U.S Supreme Court to rule on immunity claims before New York hush money trial

0

Donald Trump wants to push back his trial for paying money to keep something secret. The Supreme Court made a decision about the president’s claim that he is immune from being charged in another criminal case.

The ex-president’s lawyers asked a judge in Manhattan to delay the New York criminal trial until his claim of immunity in his election interference case in Washington, D.C, is resolved

Merchan did not make a decision right away on Monday, the judge scolded Trump’s lawyers for not filing a document on time and for waiting too long to bring up the issue of immunity. The judge also said that from now on, both Trump’s lawyers and the prosecutors need to ask for permission before making any other legal requests before the trial.

Trump says he cannot be prosecuted for things he did while being president. His lawyers say that some of the evidence and alleged actions in the hush money case happened while he was in the White House and were part of his official duties.

The highest court will listen to arguments on April 25. This is a month after jury selection was supposed to start in Trump’s hush money case. He has four criminal cases and the first one is going to trial. He is trying to become the Republican presidential nominee and win the White House again.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office did not want to say anything. Lawyers need to give their answer to Trump’s request for a delay in court this week.

Trump first brought up the immunity issue in his criminal case in Washington, D.C. It’s about claims that he tried to change the 2020 election results before his followers rioted at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The hush money case is about claims that Trump lied about his company’s records to hide payments to his lawyer Michael Cohen, who helped Trump keep bad stories secret during his 2016 presidential campaign. Cohen gave Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about her saying she had sex with Trump while he was married.

Trump’s lawyers say that the evidence prosecutors want to use in the hush money trial, like the messages he posted on social media in 2018 about paying Cohen, were from when he was president and were part of his official duties.

Last year, Trump said he did not do the 34 crimes of lying about his business records. He said he didn’t have sex with Daniels, and his lawyers say the money given to Cohen was for legal costs, not to hide anything.

Last year, a judge said no to Trump’s request to move a case from state court to federal court. Trump had said the case was about his job as president, but the judge disagreed. If the case had been transferred to federal court, Trump’s lawyers could have tried to get the charges dismissed because federal officials are protected from prosecution for things they do as part of their job.

The proof strongly shows that the President was just trying to hide something embarrassing that was personal to him, according to US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in July. “Money paid to keep a movie star quiet is not connected to the President’s official actions. ” It does not show the President’s official duties at all.

Trump’s lawyers asked for a change in Hellerstein’s decision, but then they decided to stop asking for it in November. They said they were doing it with prejudice, which means they couldn’t change their minds.

It’s not clear if a past president can be charged for things they did while in office.

The prosecutors in the Washington, DC case said Trump doesn’t have immunity and the things he’s accused of doing after losing the election aren’t considered official actions.

The judge in Washington and a higher court didn’t agree with Trump, but now the high court is going to look at it again, which means the case in Washington will be delayed and we’re not sure when it will go to trial.

US promises extra $100 million for multinational force to be deployed to Haiti

0

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that the US will give an extra $100 million to help send a group of forces from different countries to Haiti. This comes after a meeting with leaders from Caribbean countries in Jamaica to deal with the serious problems happening in Haiti.

Blinken also said the US will give another $33 million in help and agreed to make a plan, together with Caribbean leaders and Haitian people, to speed up the creation of a “presidential college. ”

He said the college will take specific actions to help the Haitian people and support the multinational force led by Kenya.

Members of Caricom, a group of countries that trade together, support the proposal made at Monday’s important meeting.

Guyanese President Irfaan Ali said that Haiti is very close to a disaster. “We need to act fast and make clear decisions. ”

He said he is very sure that we have found things in common to support a solution that is led and owned by people from Haiti.

At the same time, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the meeting was still being worked on.

“He said that Haiti is at a crucial moment. ” “We are very sad that too many people have been hurt by criminal gangs and it is too late to help them. ”

The Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, who is having a tough time and is being asked to step down or agree to a temporary council, did not go to the meeting. He was not allowed to go back to his country because there is a lot of violence and crime by gangs in Haiti’s capital and the main airports are closed.

Henry stayed in Puerto Rico and was trying to go back to Haiti when it was possible, according to a short message from the Department of State in Puerto Rico.

While the leaders had a private meeting, Jimmy Chérizier, who is considered the most powerful gang leader in Haiti, told the reporters that if the international community keeps going in the same direction, it will make Haiti even more chaotic.

“We Haitians need to choose our leader and decide what kind of government we want,” said Chérizier, a former police officer known as Barbecue, who leads a group called G9 Family and Allies. “We will also find a way to help improve Haiti’s current difficult situation. ”

The people in the group called Caricom organized a meeting in Jamaica. They have been asking for a new government in Haiti for a while now, while there have been protests asking the current leader, Henry, to step down.

“The world needs to help Haiti transition to a peaceful new government,” said US Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols on X, on Twitter. Nichols will go to the meeting.

There are worries that a solution we have been looking for may still be hard to find. Caricom said in a statement on Friday that they are holding an urgent meeting in Jamaica because they are not making enough progress yet.

Mia Mottley, the leader of Barbados, said that almost all the ideas that Haitian leaders have suggested are the same. This means there is a strong need to make a council to choose a new prime minister and form a government.

Caricom accidentally showed her comments for a short time and then stopped showing them suddenly.

The meeting took place while strong gangs kept attacking important government locations in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.

Controversy over manipulated Royal Family portrait not far-fetched – Experts

0

The Royal Family released a photo of Princess Diana and her children, but instead of making people feel better, it made them worried about her.

The picture on Mother’s Day caused a lot of talk because some news sources took it back and said it might have been changed with a computer.

Eventually, the retractions happened after a lot of talk on social media about where Catherine was and how she was doing. This was after she spent two weeks in the hospital for surgery in January. She hadn’t been seen in public since Christmas Day.

The little differences in the photo of Princess Charlotte, Catherine, and Prince Louis may not seem important, but experts say it’s okay for people to feel worried about it.

“In these strange times when anything can be changed with technology, it makes people feel paranoid. This is what Jeffrey Dvorkin, an expert in media ethics at the University of Toronto, told the media on Monday”

Catherine later said on social media that she, like many new photographers, sometimes tries out different ways of editing photos.

“I’m sorry if the family photo we posted yesterday caused any confusion,” the message said.

Dvorkin thinks she did the right thing by saying she changed the photo, but it makes people trust digital media even less.

The problem with her being so honest is that now people are questioning what else she might be hiding or lying about.

The Princess of Wales is not the only person who has changed or edited a family photo. Photographers, famous people, and regular people have been changing photos for a long time to make them look better.

Brett Caraway, a social media expert at the University of Toronto, said that anyone who uses filtered profile pictures is trying to show themselves in a different way.

But, the problem is that Kate is well known and works in a place that wants to control what people think and say about its members.

“I believe the main thing people are wondering about is why the picture was changed. Was it just to make the portrait look better. Or was it to possibly change the story going around about her health.” “And that’s a reasonable question. ”

Almost anyone can use tools to change or make fake images and use them to trick people. Anyone who looks at media online can easily be fooled by false information.

Caraway said that the world we live in today is very influenced by media. “We see the world through screens all the time, which affects how we understand what’s real. ” We learn about things in the world using the internet, unless it’s close to us. It’s really important to make sure that the way something is shown matches the way it actually is.

Institutions and leaders, like the Royal Family, should be honest about the pictures they use, or they could lose the trust of the public.

“It makes us doubt and distrust the idea that there is anyone we can rely on. ” “That’s the worst part of what’s happening,” Dvorkin said. “It makes people unsure. ”

According to Richard Berthelsen, who talks about the Royals on the media, the journalists and media groups that cover the Royal Family will also need to trust Buckingham Palace.

“The palace needs to be believable so that the media will trust what they say in the future,” Berthelsen told the media on Monday.

“They need to be more cautious. ” They need to work together more on that. They might need to ask the media to come and take a picture in certain situations.

Russian armed groups from Ukraine report attacks into Russia

0

Three groups of Russian fighters from Ukraine say they have entered Russia and are now fighting against the government’s army.

The Freedom of Russia Legion (FRL) and Siberian Battalion (SB) shared videos claiming to show their soldiers in the Belgorod and Kursk regions of Russia.

The FRL and a Russian politician who was forced to leave his country said that “liberation forces” now have control of two villages.

Russia’s military department said they stopped the breakthrough attempts.

Ukraine’s military said they were not involved in the raids that happened across the border on Tuesday. Andriy Yusov, who speaks for the country’s military intelligence, said the paramilitary groups are independent organizations made up of Russian people, so they are operating in Russia.

In another situation, Russia said Ukraine sent 25 drones to attack Russia, but the attack was stopped. But, there are videos that seem to show many Russian oil facilities burning.

A military plane crashed near Moscow in the Ivanovo region. There were eight crew members and seven passengers on board. The plane went down shortly after it took off. This information came from Russia’s defence ministry, as reported by state-run news agencies.

The ministry said that the crash happened because the engine caught on fire. It did not say who survived.

Videos have come out showing a plane on fire flying in the sky, and then a lot of black smoke from where it crashed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin started a big war in Ukraine three years ago and it doesn’t seem like it will end anytime soon. It’s the biggest war in Europe since World War Two.

On Tuesday, the FRL shared a video that they said was from the border between Russia and Ukraine.

“We in the Legion want Russia to be free from Putin’s control, just like everyone else. ” But we don’t just imagine things, we work hard to make them happen. “We will slowly reclaim our land from the government,” a soldier with a gun said in the video.

At the same time, the SB reported that there is intense fighting happening on Russian land. They also showed a video of their fighters fighting against Russian government forces.

It also criticized the Russian presidential elections that are supposed to happen from 15th to 17th March, where Mr. Putin is predicted to win.

Voting and voting places are not real in this situation. The SB said that you can only improve your life if you have weapons in your hands.

Another group from Russia that is in Ukraine, called the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), shared videos of its members fighting against the Russian government troops.

“The soldiers in the Kremlin’s army stopped fighting before the battle even began,” it was said.

Tetkino, a small village in the Kursk region, was one of the places attacked on Tuesday. The FRL said they now have full control over the village.

The media has checked and confirmed that the FRL footage showing a strike on a military vehicle in Tetkino is real.

Kursk Mayor Igor Kutsak decided to have all schools in the area switch to online classes from March 13th to 15th because of something that happened recently.

He also said that the city still has a system to let people know if there is a missile coming. The city has more than 400,000 people.

Earlier today, a Russian politician from Ukraine named Illya Ponomarev said that a border village in the Belgorod region called Lozovaya Rudka is now controlled by forces that are trying to free it.

On Tuesday, the Russian defense ministry said its forces, border guards, and FSB security service stopped the Kyiv regime from trying to enter Russia.

The report said that enemy soldiers, with tanks and armored vehicles, tried to invade Russia at the same time in three different areas in Belgorod region.

It also said that there were four more attacks on Tetkino, but they were pushed back.

Russian groups from Ukraine have been attacking across the border into Ukraine since the invasion started.

In May of last year, the Russian military stopped a similar attack in the Belgorod region and defeated the armed rebels.

Internet celebrity Andrew Tate detained in Romania

0

Andrew Tate, an online influencer, was reportedly served with legal documents by British authorities while in Romania, as stated by his spokesperson on Tuesday.

Tate, who is 37 years old, and his brother Tristan Tate were arrested on Monday evening for 24 hours. They are accused of sexual assault in a case that happened in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2015, according to spokesperson Mateea Petrescu.

She said the Bucharest Court of Appeal will decide on Tuesday whether to execute the warrants issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court in London. This decision could start the process of sending someone to another country for trial.

Four women told the U.K government that Andrew Tate hurt them in a sexual way and physically, but the government did not decide to put him on trial. The people who say they were hurt asked for donations to help pay for their legal fees while they take legal action against him.

“We gave our proof about the terrible violence we suffered and waited for something to be done. ” But four years later, the U. K authorities said they would not punish him,” they say on their campaign page. “This is our only way to make him responsible. ”

It wasn’t clear right away what Tristan Tate is being accused of in the U.K

Petrescu said on Tuesday that the Tate brothers, who have citizenship in both the United Kingdom and the United States, deny the charges and are very disappointed that such serious accusations are being brought up again without any new evidence.

Andrew Tate is accused of committing serious crimes in Romania, including rape, human trafficking, and leading a criminal group that exploits women sexually. In December 2022, he and his brother were caught by the police near Bucharest. They were with two Romanian women at that time. In June, Romanian prosecutors charged all four people, but they say they didn’t do it.

The lawyers for four British women who say Andrew Tate hurt them asked the police to find him and bring him back to Britain. They’re worried he might try to leave Romania.

“Matthew Jury, a boss at the law firm, said he was very happy to hear the news today. Many people were worried that Tate would not face punishment in Romania and other countries. ” “We are thankful to the British authorities for listening to our worries and issuing an arrest warrant. ” “Tate is being blamed for doing really bad things to a lot of people and he needs to take responsibility for it. ”

Jury said that Tate has been telling a lot of lies about the criminal charges he’s facing in the UK in interviews with famous media people like Tucker Carlson and Piers Morgan. He’s been doing this since he got arrested in Romania.

“Tate has 8. 9 million followers on X, also known as Twitter. He says the prosecutors in Romania have no proof against him and are trying to silence him for political reasons. ” He was banned from popular social media sites before for saying mean things about women and spreading hate.

On Tuesday, Tate posted on his social media account, saying, “I’m not scared of the Matrix, I only fear God. ” He uses the word “Matrix” to talk about a big conspiracy he thinks is against men.

After the Tate brothers were taken by the police in Romania, they were kept in a police station for three months before being told to stay inside their house. They were later told they could only go to certain areas in Bucharest and nearby Ilfov County. Right now, they are not allowed to go out of Romania. The court case in Romania is still in the early stages, where the people accused can argue against the evidence that the prosecutors have against them. A date for the trial has not been decided yet.

In October, lawyers for people who say they were hurt held a meeting in Bucharest. They said Andrew Tate and his group tried to scare their clients into not speaking up.

In January, Tate won a case to get his things back from the police in Romania. They took his things right after they arrested him.

The Romanian government took 15 fancy cars, 14 expensive watches, and money in different types worth about 3. 6 million euros (3. 9 million dollars)

Trudeau discusses problem with Haiti’s departing prime minister

0

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked with Haiti’s Prime Minister about the problems the country is facing with safety, politics, and helping people.

The PMO said Trudeau talked to Ariel Henry about the bad situation in Haiti and said that Canada has been supporting Haitian solutions for a long time.

Henry said on Tuesday that he will quit his job when a new group to run the country is set up.

Henry cannot go back to his own country because it is not safe. There are a lot of criminal gangs causing trouble and the main airports are closed in Haiti’s capital.

Representative and some humanitarian organizations took place to discuss the current situation in the Caribbean. Ambassador and the United States secretary of state met in Jamaica on Monday to figure out how to help Haiti during the crisis. Henry stayed in Puerto Rico for the meeting, as reported by the U. SThe state department was helping the person go back to Haiti when it’s possible.

Trudeau talked to Henry about how important it is for all the important people in Haiti to agree on a plan for fair elections and bringing back democracy.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Henry confirmed the strong connection between Canada and Haiti, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Quebec has a lot of people from Haiti, about 140,000 of them.

Many people from Haiti who live in Montreal are concerned about their family and friends because of the violent attacks in Haiti’s capital. Wedne Colin’s family had to leave their homes multiple times to find a safe place away from armed gangs who have taken over Port-au-Prince.

The United States. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that the United States will give another $100 million to help send a group of countries’ soldiers to Haiti.

In the past, the US has asked Canada to lead a military mission, but Trudeau said it’s not certain it would make the country more stable.

Blinken said the US will give $33 million to help and support the people in Haiti, and also revealed a plan that Caribbean leaders and all parties involved in Haiti’s politics have agreed to, in order to make the change in leadership happen faster. They want to create a group to choose the new president.

South Korean man detained in Russia on suspicion of espionage

0

“A man from South Korea has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of being a spy, according to the news. ” South Korean officials have said that they arrested someone and are talking with other countries to bring them back.

Baek Won-soon was taken into custody in Vladivostok, a city in the far-east, earlier this year. He is currently in a jail in Moscow.

It is thought that he is the first person from South Korea to be arrested in Russia in a long time for spying.

We don’t know much about his situation. The foreign ministry of South Korea is still investigating and they can’t say much about it yet. Its officials were trying to give help to people from their country who were in trouble in a foreign country.

Russian state media Tass reported that an unnamed official said Mr Baek is accused of giving secret information to foreign intelligence services.

Someone in Russia’s far east, who doesn’t want to be identified, said they know Mr. They told the news that Mr. Baek has been helping North Korean workers in Russia and helping them get away.

Media in South Korea said that the government of Seoul was only told last month by Russian officials about the arrest.

Yonhap, a news source from South Korea, said Mr. Baek was taken into custody by Russia’s Federal Security Service in January when he got to Vladivostok from China.

The store reported that he is a religious worker and he was with his wife. She was also arrested, but then let go. The news source reported that people think she is in South Korea now.

Mr Baek was recently arrested by Russian authorities, which is part of a pattern of them arresting foreigners since the war in Ukraine started two years ago. Moscow is being accused of arresting people from other countries to use them for political reasons or to exchange them for prisoners.

Some of the people involved are an American man who works for the Wall Street Journal. He was arrested last March for spying. There is also a Russian-US journalist who was accused of spreading untrue information about the Russian military.

Tass said that Mr. Baek and Mr. Gershkovich are both in the Lefortovo Prison. The court decided to keep him in jail until June, according to the Russian news agency.

South Korea and its Western allies have criticized Russia for invading Ukraine and agreed to impose sanctions on Moscow. At the same time, Russia and North Korea have become closer friends. Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong un met last year and experts think they made deals to share military technology.

Russian and North Korean officials had some meetings in Vladivostok last year.

President Hakainde Hichilema Misled:

‘Advisors mostly misled President HH on ECL’

The UPND has only two great weaknesses, the first is underestimating opponents and the other is failure to understand timing.

In politics there is always a window period in which to use opportunity, once that window period is gone the opponent becomes powerful and attracts attention or people’s sympathy, and when that happens, you lose control as President or government; that is the case with Edgar Chagwa Lungu. President Hakainde Hichilema has lost his time to sort out Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Those who have seen the Game of Thrones can ask these few questions to relate the situation to President Hakainde Hichilema’s weaknesses; Who made the stupidest mistake on Game of Thrones?

✓Probably the worst was Daenerys not attacking King’s Landing immediately after arriving in Westeros.
✓But it wasn’t Daenerys’ mistake; she wanted to attack King’s Landing straightaway. The mistake was listening to the idiotic counsel from her advisor’s, namely Tyrion.
✓At the time, she was still naïve and trusting of the people around her. So instead, she followed Tyrion’s advice and attacked Casterly Rock, which had no strategic value whatsoever. ✓She lost all momentum and whatever advantages she had.

Daenerys was at her strongest at that moment, everything was intact, her Dothraki horde, the Unsullied, the Second Sons, her three dragons, plus an immense fleet of ships. She also had the Tyrells, Martells, and Greyjoys on her side. King’s Landing had no defense against her. Her dragons would have free reign, no scorpions, no Golden Company, no Euron and his fleet, and Missandei wasn’t a hostage. More importantly, Daenerys wasn’t the “Mad Queen” yet. She would have spared the people of King’s Landing.

With the Unsullied and the Dothraki facing the gates of King’s Landing, and her fleet in Blackwater Bay, she would have held all the cards, Cersei would have been screwed. Daenerys didn’t need siege weapons, not with her dragons, they would have taken out the gates and the walls unopposed. Or she could have just blockade the city, but Daenerys wouldn’t have that kind of patience.

After taking King’s Landing, Daenerys could then concentrate on the Night King and his army. Jon’s idiotic trek north of the Wall to capture a wight would have been averted, and consequently Viserion wouldn’t have been killed. The Night King would have been stuck north of the Wall, without the aid of Viserion. Otherwise so much tragedy and suffering would have been avoided.

Instead of wasting time on Bowman Lusambo, Ronald Chitotela, Chitalu Chilufya etc, President Hakainde Hichilema or UPND government should have gone straight for Edgar Chagwa Lungu and the fight corruption or inhumane activities could have been done by now. So far the ACC, DEC, Police etc have nothing to use against former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu because they lost the window period due to President Hakainde Hichilema’s slowness.

President Hakainde Hichilema lost those fights when he lost timing and when he underestimated his opponent.

As things stands the UPND government and President Hakainde Hichilema will keep being rhetorical until 2026.

HYPOCRISY OF “ROLLER-MEAT”

HYPOCRISY OF “ROLLER-MEAT”

By Chilufya Chishala

(The Author is a politician and farmer based in Vubwi district in Eastern Province. He is also an activist and defender of community justice and peace. He as well saved in MMD party as a senior party functionary.)

After watching the conversation podcast ,the interview conducted by Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba featuring Madam Laura Miti,I came to discover alot of things.

Madam Laura Miti is quite intelligent but with alot of hate to certain individuals and ethnicity.

In that interview, Madam Laura Miti was reviewing the performance of the country from the time we came back to multi-partisim.

From her analysis of our former Presidents, I discovered her ignorance on Zambian politics and governance issues.

In her presentation she condemned President Fredrick Chiluba without saying any single good thing President Chiluba did ,she was merely negative.

Let me share with her something she may not know about President Chiluba.

When President Chiluba was campaigning in 199, he told the Zambian people the truth of the country was coming from and where the country was going.

I remember one of the rallies was at Pope square in Lusaka were he asked the people, are you ready to suffer?… and the people answered Yes!

President Chiluba did that so that people know where they are going, things will not be easy.

When Chiluba won the election,he formed the best cabinet so far which was well balanced with representation from all the corners of the country,he did that because he was a secondly he was a democrat.

Zambia has the best public transport system and we are second to South Africa in Africa ,which we attribute to President Chiluba’s government.

Today several
Zambians are landlords because President Chiluba believed in housing impowerments in which he gave houses to all Zambians who were sitting tenants to government houses.

Good leaders do not fail in make decisions whether good or bad, good leader are decisive.

President Chiluba was one of the Presidents who was
decisive hence we saw debt cancellation by the International community.

The current leadership is failing to tell the nation the truth ,you can not rule the country by pretending that things are fine when infact not, that is not good leadership.

We wait to see what legacy Madam Laura Miti and the UPND government are going to leave for this country.

Let me share with Madam Miti something she might have forgotten or maybe she does not know.President Chiluba allowed people to criticise him,I remember during the third term debate,he allowed the debate to run without gaging anyone.

A very rare polician who allowed 22 of his member of parliament to oppose the third term debate including his Vice President, no one was arrested until 2001 when MMD went to the convention where they were expelled.

On top of that, those who got expelled he never blocked them from forming their own political parties with
General Godfrey Miyanda forming Heritage Party, General Christon Tembo and others forming FDD while others joined UPND.

He allowed all the political party’s to campaign freely exibiting true statemanship and true democrat.

But today,a party which madam Laura Miti supports is in daylight sponsoring Miles Sampa to destroy the major opposition political party in the country, the PF.

Zambian citizens have decided to form an alliance as by their constitutional rights and the UPND government is directing the registrar of societies and the police not to accept the United Kwacha Alliance Documents, and you want us to smile?

People like Laura Miti who portrays perhaps purports to be a defender of human rights and democracy has failed to come out strongly to condemn the current police brutality and shrinking democratic space were opposition parties can not to move freely ,can not campaign and are not allowed to take part in the on-going by elections.

It is shocking that a person who as commissioner at the human rights commission is failing to condemn what is prevailing in the country ,the only thing we heard is to start complementing the UPND government and President Hakainde Hichilema by introducing free education.

Actually, the current free education is a disaster as its has brought about congestionin schools increasing poor qualityof education.

The employing of health workers and recruiting of teachers is an ongoing process and it’s not like its happening for the first time in this country.

President Hakainde Hichilema presented himself to the Zambian people as a Mesiah through his manifesto and told the Zambian people that he is going to change everything;

  1. Restoring the rule of law.

2.End police brutality.

  1. Promote democracy

4.Promote freedom of expression

  1. End carderism
  2. Reduce the cost of mealie-meal
  3. Reduce fuel pump price

What has achieved from this wishlist?

No one told President Hichilema to promise the Zambian people that they will buy mealie-meal at K50, fuel at K10 and dollar at K7.

Despite carderism in PF people were affording to eat three meals in a day ,farmers were getting fertilizer on time and the country had enough maize in the strategy reserves incase of drought and other unforseen circumstances.

Mealie-meal was at K155,which President Hichilema said was too expensive and was goibgbto reduce not knowing that he came to increase to K355.

Today people can not afford to buy mealie-meal,they are sleeping without food, even if they look for money they cant find mealie meal ,they are sharing farming inputs in meda, all the maize in the reserves was sold and we don’t even know were the money went..

What is shocking is that madam Laura Miti does not see all these things not even ques for mealie meal in these chain stores.

The country is looking for people with solutions not praise singers who are not objective in their presentation.

Madam Miti’s face is contaminated with hate for our past leaders and praise for the current government but then, some Zambians went very early into the grave cause of bad decisions made by individuals who are exaulted now and are in the driving sit.

It is very important when you are pointing a finger at someone remember to check where the other three fingers are pointing at because if you look at her presentation it’s like Zambia started existing when UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema came into government when you ask what have they done in two and half years they have been in government you cannot point anything.

By the way, much talked about CDF is worrying because it is being done under a low budget and as such, structures are falling apart even before handover.

A government is supporting construction of very cheap standard it’s like we are in the 70’s.

The current CDF works in terms of quality can not be compared to that of then MMD or PF because PF raised mthe standard on infrastructure.

Today Lusaka is looking like a capital city because of the Patriotic Front ,go to Southern Province we have a modern Kazungula bridge which was built under the PF administration, look about the inter-city bus terminals in Livingstone ,the modern markets in livingstone and each district has got a modern bus stop .

PF took one of the most expensive road which is Mongu -Kalabo road.

If you check in the Ten Provinces we have three stretch road network which looks better and these roads are Kafue-Kazungula, Chingola -Solwezi and luangwa Bridge to Mwami border some of these roads where constructed and initiated by MMD but when PF came into Government those projects which were initiated by MMD,the PF completed them.

If you check the road network in the northern circuit they are very bad because that is the strong hold of the Patriotic Front but they didn’t mind where development can be taken to because it’s one country,in 10 years of PF if you go round in all the districts there is a new structure either there is a district hospital , secondary school, primary schools or government buildings .

Today,we have access to all the districts in this country because of the MMD and the PF and when UPND analyze PF they only focus on one thing-carderism,they don’t talk about good things which PD did, what a shame.

This country needs eminate men and women who can appreciate good things and condemn bad things, then we are going to progress as country. It is not right for people to criticise others using the lens of hate and tribe it will take this country nowhere.

As I conclude,I was very disappointed with Madam Laura Miti as she even failed to support her fellow women who were removed from their offices unconstitutionally the former DPP Lilian Siyuni Shawa and Madam Thandiwe the registrar of societies because they stood firm while you have people who call themselves defenders of justice , democracy and human rights.

Madam Laura Miti failed to defend her colleagues because of their political and tribal incrination, shame!

PRESIDENT HH HAS SUCCESSFULLY SHUT DOWN THE LOCAL INFORMAL SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESSES- Jackson Silavwe

PRESIDENT HH HAS SUCCESSFULLY SHUT DOWN THE LOCAL INFORMAL SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESSES

…. The economy is back to the colonial era, an economy for the civil servants only.

Issued: 11/03/24

To a large extent, the high cost of living in President Hakainde Hichilema’s government can be traced to two factors introduced by his new dawn administration namely;

1. Perceived mopping up of excess cash from the local economy (A hoax, by the way). By increasing the monetary policy rate (MPR) and the Statutory Reserve Ratio (SRR), President Hichilema has shut down the INFORMAL LOCAL SECTOR in one single blow.

Less money in local circulation has directly hit local small and medium businesses with very LOW SALES whilst the cost of doing business is equally increasing. 2 opposites in the same market.

The majority poor who depend on the informal sector can no longer AFFORD the basics such as mealie meal hence the cries in the compounds of njala! insala or hunger.

2. The fluctuating fuel prices. A closer look in the foreign exchange regime indicate that all the major convertibles are dancing to the song of fuel prices by the ERB.

This is extremely catastrophic in an import led economy with more than 80% of the products on the shelves of tutemba’s, groceries and supermarkets from outside the country.

As long as the dollar is dancing, all the Zambian’s will have to dance gule wamkulu to the high cost of living and doing business.

Solutions In Part:

3. Flood the local economy with money targeted at the informal for Zambian’s to have disposable income. (RB’s economics).

4. Monthly fuel price reviews must be stopped forthwith and replaced with only 2 price reviews in each half of the year, preferably in march and august respectively.

5. Incentivise small and medium local businesses to produce and employ more locals. Small and medium enterprises form the basis of the local economy. Right now they suffocated.

6. Encourage locals to spend more. When people don’t spend the economy suffers, a classical example of the Zambian economy at the moment. Modern economies grow through spending.

7. Zambian economy needs “new money” through taxation in the mining sector, agriculture and by removing tax holidays being enjoyed by multi- national companies (MNC’s).

Trying to develop with the current levels of taxation is getting into a bucket and trying to lift one’s self.

Zambia cashing heavily on Malawi’ sugar crisis

0

Illegally imported Zambian-White Spoon sugar has finally found its way in Malawi’s markets with thanks to shortage of sugar in the country besides having two sugar manufacturing Companies-Salima Sugar and Illovo Sugar.

Even though the Zambian sugar is in most of the markets across the country, its price MK3,200 as sold in Lilongwe and surrounding areas is not cheaper as expected but a little bit better than Malawi sugar which is MK3,700 a packet of one Kilogram.

Sugar shortage in Malawi has resulted to the commodity to become exorbitant and is beyond the reach of the poor who already are struggling to buy a pale of maize flour at MK3,600 in Mgona township and surrounding areas in Lilongwe.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has called on President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to address the nation on the scarcity of sugar in Malawi and the reasons that has made the commodity to be sold at K4,000 per one Kilogram packet.

Kamphangala said it is sad that the price of sugar which has gone up beating Illovo Sugar company’s factory price of MK1, 912 per one Kilogram packet lamenting that this has again come at a time when most citizens in Malawi are failing to meet their everyday life situations.

He said sugar price of K4,000 per packet has frustrated many Malawians regardless of their political party affiliations saying the situation gives opposition parties chance to de-campaign President Chakwera so that he doesn’t bounce back in 2025.

The MCP diehard has claimed that many people in Dowa district have painted Chakwera’s leadership style being black with no hope that he can do better following the implementation of Affordable Input Programme (AIP) in the district that it was far from the people’s expectations.

He said many people in the district thought that President Chakwera would reward the Dowa people with fertilizer coupons for massively vote for him in the June, 2020 fresh presidential elections resulting to an all MCP Dowa District Council.

He noted with a great concern that eight village heads received only 8 fertilizer coupons, in some villages not even one benefited reducing the Dowa people to beggars while they are hard-working making Dowa a food basket district feeding other regions in Malawi.

“I am pleading with you President Chakwera to intervene in the sugar crises, continued silence on the issue, is resulting to many people insulting and castigating you who was voted on trust that you will turn around the country’s economy,” said Kamphangala.

President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government has failed to meet Malawians expectations.

The leadership is being marred with high cost of living, inflation, food crisis, forex and drugs shortages, nepotism, corruption and among others.

A fake video has gotten my wife jailed, cries soldier

THE Lusaka Magistrates court was yesterday a scene of mixed emotions as the four-month trial of Longwe Ngosa ended with her receiving a seven year jail stay for assaulting her stepson aged four.

As Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya pronounced the verdict, Longwe remained calm as her face and body language communicated almost nothing about how she felt about the judgement.

Quite different from her mother and siblings who broke down and wailed loudly she laid back in the dock with her hand covering her mouth.

Longwe’s soldier husband was upset about the turn of events blaming his son’s teacher who recorded video that showed the scars inflicted on the child.

Bwalya vented his anger on the nosy reporters that wanted his reaction.

“You f**** off! You are the least person I want to see, don’t even try to capture me, I don’t want to see myself anywhere or else you will see what I will do! don’t put words in my mouth! my wife has gone to jail and my son has been kept away from me because that teacher created a fake video,” Bwalya said as he rushed down the court corridor.

When persistant and pursuing reporters asked if Bwalya approved of his wife maltreating his child,he rescinded; “nshalipo walefwaya incite inshi? nga balemuma lwakwe (I wasn’t around what did you expect me to do? If he was being battered that’s his fault).”

As for the relatives of the child’s late mother, they too wore sad faces although they seemed celebrate the child’s teacher Naomi Chisola whom they gave a group hug as they exited the the court.

Ngosa of MC2A 78 Apollo military camp was charged with assault on a child before the Lusaka Magistrates Court, which attracts a minimum sentence of five years.

Between April 1, 2023 and July 31, 2023 Ngosa assaulted a single orphaned minor under the age of 16.

On November 1, 2023 the child eloquently revealed it all before Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, of how his stepmother used a hosepipe and a knife to inflict harm on him.

Upon being queried about the abuse he suffered at the hands of Ngosa by State prosecutor Malama Chisenga, the brilliant boy recounted his maltreatment without difficulty and implicated his bonus mom of scarring his little body.

He said Ngosa would flog him with a hose pipe and a ‘shamboko’. The boy also managed to identify her as his torturer

Doctor Brian Ngoma an orthopedist University Teaching Hospital who diagnosed the child with non-accidental trauma said the lacerations on his body and deformity on his left forearm and leg was as a result of abuse and not accidental.

He said the child was also malnourished.

In her defense Ngosa gave conflicting statements regarding the the healed abrasions on the child’s body, when she claimed that the boy’s teacher Naomi Chisola who exposed the abuse to the public, was responsible for all the all torture marks on his tiny body.

She later claimed that the whip marks on his back were bed sores which developed as a result of maintaining the same sleeping position when he was admitted to UTH, while the ones on his stomach was as a reaction to some food he might have eaten at school.

But in her findings magistrate Mwenya said Ngosa’s explanation was unflavored as beetroots, as the impact of the injuries as evidenced by the medical report were grave, and the abuse should not have happened to the four-year-old child.

“The boy was injured in unknown circumstances. The teacher noticed something was amiss with him and when questioned he told her that his mother had beaten him,”magistrate Mwenya said.

“I have carefully analyzed the evidence in its entirety and it is clear that the child knows who assaulted him as he mentioned in the video that was recorded of him. The sores on his body were just discovered by a concerned teacher at his school. The video is clear and difficult to watch and one would wonder how a mother could do such a thing.”

She said whilst under the care of Ngosa the child sustained serious injuries on his body that should not have happened to a four year old child who could not recollect all the perpetual abuse except the last one which made the school report the case.

“The injuries are too much for a mere fall or razor blade cutting. The evidence has left me with no doubt that this child has been assaulted for a period of time under a primary care giver with no one to rescue him, all he knew was that he was a bad boy,”magistrate Mwenya said.

“I don not therefore uphold the evidence of the accused person after considering all the evidence before me I find that the State has managed to prove the case of assault on a child beyond reasonable doubt and I convict her accordingly.”

When given chance to address the court and plead for leniency before the sentencing, Ngosa opted to remain silent.

Four police officers eventually walked Ngosa down to the Lusaka Central Correctional Facility just across the the Magistrates Court to start her 84-month stay behind bars.

As the nation embraces youth week, the staff at Indo Zambia Bank (IZB) showed up to work dressed as their 18-year-old selves while embracing the spirit of their younger years. It was a chance for them to reminisce, have some fun, and celebrate the vibrancy of the youth together.

They have urged all the youths out there to embrace their passions, ignite their dreams, and celebrate the spirit of youth. There is need to create a world where the voices of youths are heard, their dreams are realized, and they unite to shape a brighter future together.

UK debates tightening Zimbabwe sanctions as China, Russia influence grows

LONDON – The United Kingdom’s (UK) House of Lords last week debated revising sanctions on Zimbabwe in light of the United States (US) tightening its own measures.

Lord Bellingham, a member of the House, expressed concern that the war in Ukraine and recent events in Gaza have diverted attention from the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe.

He accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Zanu-PF party of human rights abuses and stifling opposition. Lord Bellingham argued for “tighter and wider smart sanctions” targeting specific individuals within the government and their associates.

Lord St John of Bletso raised concerns that existing sanctions haven’t deterred Mnangagwa and instead created an opening for China and Russia to exploit Zimbabwe’s mineral resources.

This highlights a growing concern about China’s dominance in Zimbabwe’s economy, particularly in the mining sector.

“My Lords, does the Minister agree that the existing sanctions in Zimbabwe have not curbed President Mnangagwa’s repressive regime and left a vacuum for the Chinese and the Russians, who are occupied in mining strategic minerals?

“Is it not time to convene an all-party parliamentary conference in Zimbabwe to help pave the way for the incumbent Government to be more inclusive and address the reduction of poverty for millions of long-suffering Zimbabweans?”

While the Zimbabwean government welcomes the removal of broader economic sanctions, some argue it hasn’t translated into a better life for ordinary citizens. With widespread poverty persisting, calls for a more inclusive government and poverty reduction remain.

The Minister of State, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, acknowledged concerns about human rights abuses and limitations on civil liberties in Zimbabwe.

He pointed to the UK’s existing sanctions targeting individuals responsible for human rights violations and stated that the UK continues to review its sanctions regime.

“My Lords, my noble friend is right. We have been deeply seized by and concerned about the targeting of civil liberties.

“We engaged with the Government on the PVO amendment Bill before the 2023 elections, and we have seen the so-called patriot Bill, which has limited freedom of expression.

“My noble friend will also be aware that the introduction of the global human rights sanctions regime in 2019 allows us to do exactly that: we can specifically target the people who commit egregious abuses of human rights rather than citizens or, indeed, a country,” Lord Ahmad said.

Zimbabweans in limbo as inflation soars, awaiting elusive monetary policy

Zimbabweans are facing yet another economic blow as inflation skyrockets to a staggering 1605%, according to Professor Steve Hanke’s inflation dashboard.

This comes as the nation anxiously awaits the much-anticipated Monetary Policy Statement, hoping for a plan to address the spiraling economic crisis.

The latest inflation figure revealed by the American economist and Professor of Applied Economics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, paints a grim picture of Zimbabwe’s economic chaos.

Daily necessities are becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary citizens, eroding their purchasing power and pushing many towards poverty.

The economic turmoil comes on the heels of past policy decisions, particularly the controversial land reform program, which many experts believe significantly contributed to the nation’s economic woes.

The government, however, has promised to unveil its plans to tackle the crisis through the upcoming Monetary Policy Statement. The details of this statement remain unclear, leaving Zimbabweans in a state of uncertainty.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said the measures to prop up the ailing currency may include reforming the foreign currency auction system.

“Currency volatility is being caused by speculative behaviour in the market and a shortage of foreign currency during this high-demand season.

“The government will be taking further fiscal and monetary policy measures, which may include auction redesign to deal with the volatility.

“The government will also increase the supply of foreign currency at a time when demand for it is high,” Ncube said.

Economists have been urging the government to implement clear and sustainable policies to address the root causes of inflation, such as budget deficits and currency instability.

Without concrete and credible action, many fear the situation will continue to deteriorate, causing further hardship for the Zimbabwean people.

This comes at a time when experts have warned that the El Niño-induced drought could be one of the worst in decades.

The World Food Programme estimates that millions across Southern Africa face hunger, with Zimbabwe and Zambia at the epicenter of the crisis.

Livestock deaths are on the rise, further crippling livelihoods and impacting food security.

Zelensky celebrates Ukraine’s historic Oscar win

President Zelensky is happy about Ukraine winning its first Oscar for a documentary about Russia’s attack on Mariupol. Mr Zelensky said the movie tells the truth about terrorism in Russia.

The movie shows how the people of Mariupol are suffering while their city is being destroyed. It’s something we don’t see often.

Director Mstyslav Chernov said he felt happy and proud to be the first person from Ukraine to win an Oscar for the best documentary.

“I might be the first director on this stage to say that I wish I never made this film,” he said at the event in Los Angeles.

“I hope that Russia will never attack Ukraine or take over our cities,” he said. He also mentioned that Russia has killed many people from Ukraine.

Mr Chernov wants everyone to make sure that the true history is remembered and that the people of Mariupol and those who have died there are never forgotten.

Movies create memories, and those memories make up our history.

The director ended his speech by shouting “Glory to Ukraine. “, a phrase that many Ukrainians are now using to show support for their country, both at home and abroad.

The movie is getting a lot of attention on social media in Ukraine. A news channel even called it a “historic victory”. This information comes from James Waterhouse, a reporter for the BBC in Kyiv.

Mr Chernov’s group of three reporters recorded the slow surrounding of Mariupol by Russian soldiers in the early months of Russia’s complete attack in February 2022. Their movie shows the harsh reality of what happened to the people who lived there.

The team took a big risk filming there, and somehow they were able to leave the city by passing through many Russian checkpoints with the filmed material hidden under a car seat.

Mariupol, a city in southern Ukraine near the Sea of Azov, was almost completely destroyed by Russian soldiers after a lot of intense fighting.

Russia says it took over something in May 2022 and calls it “liberation”.

DISASTER: FARMERS PRAY AS DROUGHT WITHERS THEIR CROP- Fred M’membe

DISASTER: FARMERS PRAY AS DROUGHT WITHERS THEIR CROP

It’s a disaster! Fields have dried up due to a drought that has destroyed a huge crop hectarage in most regions, and is threatening our country with unprecedented hunger.

Before the crisis, our country was already in distress caused by poor leadership and policy decisions, severe debt, decimated maize and financial reserves and an unstable currency that has triggered untold and unseen hardship for our people.

Sadly, even before our farmers could navigate this economic chaos and its attendant aftermath like exorbitant farming input prices, high electricity tariffs, and many more, the rains have failed us. The heavens have shut us out. And our crops are burning in the heat as if it’s in the dry season.

Our farmers have suffered a traumatic double blow from the drought, which is a natural cause to the economic crisis that is essentially a man- made calamity.

The farmers are stuck. They’re desperate. They’re miserable. They’re depressed. All they’re doing now is pray as drought withers their crops. Take, for instance, Zambia’s largest commercial farm area – the Mkushi farm block – it has been hit with unprecedented dryness.

The entire Mkushi farm block has been laid bare, and the losses are at an industrial scale like never seen before, with bankruptcy looming over the heads of defaulters, as banks prepare to safeguard their interests.

As you know, commercial farmers get loans with a repayment plan tailored primarily on two crops, and in the case of natural calamities, as is the case now, repayments become impossible. And so far, we are informed that there is an initial recall of loans for 11 commercial farmers.

We understand the banks have so soon sent out notices for the sale of the attached farms and assets by mortgage in possession. With the initial 11 affected farms believed to be valued at about US$15.6 million. What a terrible situation for the farmers and for the agricultural sector in the country?

However, the questions to ask are: if commercial farmers are this badly hit by this climate crisis or the drought itself, what are the peasant or small-scale farmers going through? How are they coping and mitigating the losses caused by this crisis? Who is even paying attention to their plight? What practical measures are in place to assist these most vulnerable citizens in this country?

Certainly, this situation will greatly impact the economy and, ultimately, the country’s food security. There is no doubt that a very unpleasant reality for the country and its citizens is ahead of us. Definitely, food will be scarce. This calls for sobriety, mature, and patriotic leadership.

It’s is also shocking to note that when politicians are busy talking about engaging commercial farmers to grow irrigated crops to mitigate the impact of the drought in the country, the country’s most productive and reliable farming block is choking on its debt, and going under the hammer in piecemeal. How will the government policy directive of growing more winter maize be realised when the commercial farmers have been left to suffocate? Who is following these events, and what are they doing to help both commercial and peasant farmers?

The situation we are faced with as a country today is not an easy one. It is a very difficult scenario, and we call upon the UPND administration to take a keen interest in what is happening in the agricultural sector and make practical interventions to help our farmers.

Dear Morgan,

Re: PURPORTED ACCEPTANCE OF MY VOLUNTARY RESIGNATION

I make reference to the above matter and the letter under your hand date 4 March 2024, which has been drawn to my attention through social media, in which it is purported that you have purported to accept my resignation from the Patriotic Front (PF) I must state on the outset that in writing the present letter to you, I do so not in any way as my recognition of your purported position as Secretary General of the PF. In my Official capacity as Member of Parliament for Milanzi and in my personal capacity as a member of the PF I do not recognise you as our Party’s Secretary General. It is common knowledge that your purported occupation of the Office of Secretary General is an embodiment of the illegal and unconstitutional way in which you and other collaborators , whom I have copied this letter to, purportedly set yourselves up as a leadership of the PF.In particular response to your purported letter above referenced, I write to state my position as stated below:

1. Contribution to the Party

I write to advise you that the decision to make contributions to the Party was a decision I made voluntarily and was personal decision. If you take time to acquaint yourself with the PF Constitution, you will note that MPs are not mandated to contribute any portion of their earnings to the Party. I take the liberty to inform you that article 83 of the PF Constitution, which you have purported to cite as authority in your letter, does not address itself to financial contributions to the PF.Further, you may wish to be informed that I am still making my voluntary contribution to the PF, and, this is in addition to meeting all the expenses for mobilization of the Party in Milanzi Constitutency.

2. Purported acceptance of my resignation

I have noted with concern that your letter purports to “accept” my resignation on account of my purported stoppage of contributions. In addition to repeating what I have tabulated above, I am compelled to inform you that your citing of article 72 (2)(e) of the Constitution is not only highly misplaced but it is a clear manifestation of very bad faith on your part and a wanton and malicious instigation of the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly to initiate steps of my removal from Office as MP in circumstance where such removal is not necessary and unwarranted.Article 72(2) of the Republican Constitution is very clear in providing for instances in which a sitting MP can vacate Office. Non of what is contained in your purported letter meets the threshold set by the Constitution. For avoidance of any doubt I have NEVER authored any letter under my hand notifying the PF and the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly of my resignation from Office as Member of Parliament.Your tendency to quote the Constitutional provisions out of context in your bid to continue purveying destructive activities against the Country’s sacred Constitutional Order is not only sickening but its a gross violation of the rights of people as enshrined in the Constitution.I have also note that you have purported to inform the Speaker of the National Assembly of my purported “resignation” This has also caused me gross concern because lately the Office of the Speaker has embroiled itself unnecessarily in matters that concern the PF as a Party. The existing Constitutional Order dictates that the Office of the Speaker should never involve itself with matters concerning internal affairs of Political Parties.Based on what I have said above I write to demand that you immediately retract your purported letter on the grounds that it is without basis and it is a gross violation of the rights of the people of Milanzi to be represented by a person they freely and fairly elected into Office and also its a violation of the Constitution of the PF.If you do not heed my demand within the next two (2) days I will refer this matter to my Lawyers and instruct them to take legal action to you in yours personal capacity.By copy of this letter I am also placing the same demand on the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly and placing it on notice that my quest to seek legal remedies will also extend to the Office of the Speaker if they in any way attempt to act on your purported letter.

Yours faithfully

Dear Morgan,

Re: PURPORTED ACCEPTANCE OF MY VOLUNTARY RESIGNATION

I make reference to the above matter and the letter under your hand dated 4 March 2024, which has been drawn to my attention through social media, in which it is purported that you have purported to accept my resignation from the Patriotic Front (PF)

I must state on the outset that in writing the present letter to you, I do so not in any way as my recognition of your purported position as Secretary General of the PF. In my Official capacity as Member of Parliament for Bangweulu and in my personal capacity as a member of the PF I do not recognise you as our Party’s Secretary General. It is common knowledge that your purported occupation of the Office of Secretary General is an embodiment of the illegal and unconstitutional way in which you and other collaborators , whom I have copied this letter to, purportedly set yourselves up as a leadership of the PF.

In particular response to your purported letter above referenced, I write to state my position as stated below:

  1. Contribution to the Party

I write to advise you that the decision to make contributions to the Party was a decision I made voluntarily and was personal decision. 1. Purported acceptance of my resignation

I have noted with concern that your letter purports to “accept” my resignation on account of my purported stoppage of contributions. In addition to repeating what I have tabulated above, I am compelled to inform you that your citing of article 72 (2)(e) of the Constitution is not only highly misplaced but it is a clear manifestation of very bad faith on your part and a wanton and malicious instigation of the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly to initiate steps of my removal from Office as MP in circumstance where such removal is not necessary and unwarranted.

For avoidance of any doubt I have NEVER authored any letter under my hand notifying the PF and the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly of my resignation from Office as Member of Parliament.

Your tendency to quote the Constitutional provisions out of context in your bid to continue purveying destructive activities against the Country’s sacred Constitutional Order is not only sickening but its a gross violation of the rights of people as enshrined in the Constitution.

I have also note that you have purported to inform the Speaker of the National Assembly of my purported “resignation” This has also caused me gross concern because lately the Office of the Speaker has embroiled itself unnecessarily in matters that concern the PF as a Party. The existing Constitutional Order dictates that the Office of the Speaker should never involve itself with matters concerning internal affairs of Political Parties.

Based on what I have said above I write to demand that you immediately retract your purported letter on the grounds that it is without basis and it is a gross violation of the rights of the people of Bangweulu to be represented by a person they freely and fairly elected into Office and also its a violation of the Constitution of the PF.

WHEN DISDAIN FOR A PEOPLE GROUP CAN NO LONGER BE HIDDEN

WHEN DISDAIN FOR A PEOPLE GROUP CAN NO LONGER BE HIDDEN

10th March 2024

The pedestrian statement by President Hichilema that “the Northern Part has no culture of farming. We should not neglect provinces with a culture of farming because they have no rains” cannot go unchallenged.

We find the statement not only condescending and disdainful of the people from the Northern Part of Zambia but factually incorrect as well as divisive. People from the Northern Part, are not hunter gatherers, have lived there for centuries and have fed themselves from the time they came from Kola, through agriculture. As a matter of fact, the people from ‘the Northern Part’ have practised their Chitemene system and stored in their amatala enough reserves to last them until the next, and even beyond, agricultural season – something that this present Government has failed to do. If the New Dawn Government could humble themselves, they may just learn a thing or two from the culture of farming as practised by ‘the Northern Parts’.

Having travelled to Luapula Province during this 2023/24 farming season, our team were surprised by the extensive maize farming that has been undertaken as evidenced by healthy crops all over that Province. A Food Reserve Agency person spoken to, indicated that they expect nothing less than a bumper harvest from the Northern Part. Mr. President, even if your statement that Northerners have no culture of farming, had substance, people do adapt and learn to conditions that face them. People from the Northen Parts have learnt and are now growing maize and not just cassava, sorghum and millet.

Having said that, it is worth noting that there is no part of Zambia, North, East, West, South and Central, that did not and does not engage in agriculture and have a culture of farming.

Why did the President not merely say “We should not neglect provinces that do not have rains” and leave it at that? No one, in their right minds, would have disagreed with him. Why bring in ‘the Northern Part’ in that disdainful manner?

Here is wisdom. Whether we like it or not, the fact of the matter is that the rain-belt has shifted and ‘the Northern Part’ which include North-Western, Parts of Copperbelt, Luapula, Muchinga and Northern Provinces receive above average rainfalls. In addition, these same Provinces are the ones that have a lot of perennial streams, rivers and in the case of Luapula and Northern, large fresh water bodies. Other parts of the country to those mentioned above, receive less rainfall. We say this in all humility knowing that none of us are able to control weather patterns nor the location of water bodies. It is what it is. Planning around this fact, rather than making emotive and divisive statements, will greatly bring value to us.

Recognising the above, going forward, we need to plan our agricultural crop spread, not in accordance to our area of origin, but in such a way as to maximise our production from the sector – for the benefit of the whole nation. We must encourage the growth of crops that are more rain-dependant in the rain-belt and those that are more drought resistant, like sorghum, millet, cassava, cow peas and groundnuts in the drier areas. That way Mr. President, we shall leave no one behind.

Chimba Lumande.

0

STRIKER Fashion Sakala and midfielder Kings Kangwa are among the notable absentees in the 24 – man team called by Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant ahead of Zambia’s participation in the 4-team tournament in Malawi.

Zambia will this month travel to Malawi to face that country, Kenya and Zimbabwe in the international friendly tournament as the team shapes up for the world cup qualifiers set for June.

Zambia is set to play Morocco and Tanzania as they look to pump some life in their quest to qualify to the 2026 World Cup.

Grant has included the core of the team that played at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast but there are some notable names missing from the team among them Sakala, Kangwa and goalkeeper Francis Mwansa.

Sakala and Kangwa were among the under performers at AfCON but Grant could not state the reason why the two have been left out of the crucial preparatory matches.

“I don’t speak about players that are not in the squad, i need to give respect. There will always be questions about players that are not in the squad.

“I want to try other thing and other players and i think we need to give respect to the squad…there is a different reason to each one of them,” Grant said at a briefing today.

Grant qualified his decision by stating that the national team is not a closed club.

“You can go out from the national team, and you can come out…everything is based about the criteria that I use to choose the team,” Grant said.

Grant said the tournament is important as the team prepares for the June engagements.

“It will very tough in June but I am positive about this. This tournament is very important for the preparations,” he said, “it will be a good test teams in Africa are improving everyday,”

Emmanuel Macron has spoken out about untrue rumors that his wife was born as a man

0

French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken out about untrue rumors that his wife was born as a man. He said the rumors are not true and were made up.

Macron talked at an event for International Women’s Day on Friday. He was upset and annoyed by people always talking about his wife, Brigitte Macron, who is 70 years old and whom he married in 2007.

He said the bad part is the fake information and made-up stories. People start to believe in what they say and bother you, even in private moments.

He said that men often attack women online, and his wife was a victim of this.

In 2021, people started talking about Ms Macron on a far-right website. Then, conspiracy theorists spread the rumors.

Two women, Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey, started the rumors. Amandine is 52 years old and says she can predict the future. Natacha is 48 and says she works as a journalist.

Both were in a long YouTube video in December 2021 where they said that Brigitte used to be a boy named Jean-Michel Trogneux when she was born in 1953.

However, this is actually the name of Brigitte’s brother. Before she got married for the first time, Ms. Macron was called Brigitte Trogneux.

The couple said that Brigitte’s first husband, André-Louis Auzière, never existed before he died in 2020 at the age of 68.

Ms Macron sued the two women for saying bad things about her. They were given small fines, but then the fines were made even smaller after they asked for it to be changed.

The people on trial said they were scared of the government and that very important people in Paris were trying to keep a big secret hidden.

At first, a judge in Lisieux, Normandy, gave both women a fine of about £1,700 each. But later, Roy’s fine was lowered to about £850 after an appeal, and Rey had £1,300 of her £1,700 fine put on hold, so she only had to pay £400.

At first, Ray and Roy were accused of invading someone’s privacy and using their image without permission. But in the end, they were sued for saying something false and damaging about someone.

Frédéric Pichon, the lawyer defending Rey, said she looked into Ms Macron’s background with good intentions and following the rules that permit people to express themselves freely.

He was very upset that his client was put in jail by the police two times during the case. He said, “I am surprised by how much the authorities are trying to quiet her down. ”

Mrs Macron was targeted with transphobic rumours by the far-right in 2022, while the President was trying to get re-elected.

The video made by Rey and Roy is not on YouTube anymore.

The strange case details were brought back up recently after Ms Macron’s daughter talked about the accusations for the first time.

In an interview with Paris Match magazine, Tiphaine Auzière, who is 40 years old, said that she is worried about how society is behaving when she hears rumors on social media about her mother being a man.

Ms Auzière talked about feeling hurt when she found out at 10 years old that her mom, who was a teacher, was dating teenager Emmanuel Macron.

The future politician was only 15 years old when he started dating a woman named Brigitte Auzière. She was 40 and married with three kids. She was also a drama teacher at a high school in northern France.

Israeli president’s attendance to Holocaust museum opening ceremony met with protest in Netherlands

0

The National Holocaust Museum in the Netherlands had its grand opening on Sunday. The ceremony was attended by the Dutch king and Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Some people protested because of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The people leading the protest said they didn’t want Herzog to be there, but they didn’t have a problem with the museum and what it stands for.

The museum in Amsterdam exhibits the histories of 102,000 Jews who were deported from the Netherlands and murdered in Nazi camps. It also tells about how they were persecuted by the German soldiers during World War II.

The museum helps people remember and understand the Jewish people who were treated badly in the Netherlands, the Dutch King Willem-Alexander said at the opening ceremony on Sunday. He also said it “teaches us about the serious results of hating Jews. “

The king said we need to keep remembering how things started and got even worse. Before, the king and the president of Israel went to the well-known Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam.

Herzog praised the Netherlands for starting a new Holocaust museum because he thinks there is more antisemitism in the world.

“At this very important moment, this institution is making a strong statement,” Herzog said. “Don’t forget the terrible things that happen when people hate others because of their religion or race. We should never let that happen again. “

The ceremony on Sunday happened while Israel was attacking Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel in October. “

Thousands of people who support Palestine came together at Waterloo Square in Amsterdam. They were waving Palestinian flags, shouting “Never again is now,” and asking for the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands to stop and for the fighting in Gaza to end right away.

Joana Cavaco, who is against war, spoke to the crowd before the ceremony and said that these museums are important to the history of Jewish people. She said: “How is it possible that people are using such a holy place to make genocide seem normal today. “

Ninety percent of Dutch Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II.

The United Nations court told Israel to stop any killing, destruction, and genocide in Gaza. Herzog, an Israeli leader, was mentioned in the order. He said the International Court of Justice didn’t understand what he meant in the decision. Israel said no to accusations from South Africa in court that their military actions in Gaza are breaking the Genocide Convention.

“I felt really upset because they changed my words and only used small parts of what I said to support their case without any evidence,” Herzog said a few days after the decision.

A Dutch group, The Rights Forum, who support the Palestinians, said that Herzog’s visit is hurtful to the Palestinians who are unable to do anything while Israel hurts them and damages their land.

Before the museum opens on Sunday, the Jewish Cultural Quarter is worried about the war and its effects on the people in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.

It is worrying that the National Holocaust Museum is opening while the war is still going on. Our mission becomes even more urgent.

The museum is in a building that used to be a school for teachers. It was also used as a secret way for around 600 Jewish children to escape from the Nazis.

The exhibit has a big picture of a boy walking past dead bodies at Bergen-Belsen after the camp was freed, and things that remind us of the people who died there: a doll, a dress made from parachute material, and 10 buttons found at the Sobibor camp.

In one room, the walls are covered with lots of laws that were unfair to Jews. These laws were made by the German rulers of the Netherlands. They wanted to show how the Nazis, with help from Dutch workers, treated Jews as less than human before they were rounded up.

The museum tells the stories of people who were taken away from society, had no rights, were not protected by the law, were put in prison, separated from their families, and killed, said the king of the Netherlands.

Biden and Trump travel to Georgia ahead of expected rematch

0

The president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and his rival, Donald Trump, have travelled to Georgia for an anticipated rematch in election. The 2024 election will start where the 2020 election ended. Or, to be more exact, in a location where it didn’t really end.

Four years ago, Georgia was a close election. Now, Donald Trump is in trouble for trying to find and overturn votes to change the result in favor of Joe Biden. After winning on Super Tuesday, the two rivals will have competing events in a state that is important for winning in November. This sets up a likely rematch between them.

“We are a really important state in the election now,” said U.S Rep Nikema Williams, who is a leader in Atlanta and a member of the Democratic Party.

Georgia used to be a place where Republicans were very strong, but now it’s so close between the two main political parties that they can’t even agree on how to talk about the differences. The governor, who is a Republican, said the state has a 52-48 split. Brian Kemp is in charge of the government in his state. “We’re not on the blue team or the red team,” Williams said, “we’re on the periwinkle team,” She believes this because Biden won in 2020 and Georgia sent two Democratic senators to Washington.

Both Biden and Trump have a chance to win, but they both have many challenges to overcome.

“Biden’s popularity is very low for many reasons, and we can definitely discuss why that is. ” “So, this means that Trump has a good chance of winning the race,” Kemp said at a recent event sponsored by Punchbowl News. “I think he might not win the race. ” I think it’s going to be much more difficult than people think.

A dangerous situation for both sides.

Biden won by just a little bit in 2020. Warnock won the Senate runoff in 2022 by three points. Kemp won the election in 2018 by a small amount, but in 2022 he won by a big amount in a state where the competition is tough.

In every election, Democrats had a lot of support in the main part of Atlanta, where Biden will be on Saturday. They also did well in Columbus and Savannah, and some small, mostly Black areas. But Republicans were the most popular in countryside areas, small towns, and the smallest cities. For example, Rome, where the former president will visit on Saturday in the congressional district represented by strong conservative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Biden is meeting with three political groups to get their support. They represent Black, Latino, and Asian Americans and Pacific Island voters. The groups said they would spend $30 million to help get people to vote for Biden.

First lady Jill Biden went to Georgia to campaign, and Vice President Kamala Harris has also visited the state many times since she and Biden became president and vice president.

The expanding suburbs and rural areas outside of Atlanta are changing quickly and offer a good chance for political changes, especially from moderate Republicans who are unhappy with Trump.

Eric Tanenblatt, a lawyer from Atlanta who has been a longtime supporter of the Republican party, said that the final result will depend on small differences.

The Democrats are starting early to make their campaign plans and they will be reaching out directly to many people in Georgia. It will be different from the limited campaign in 2020 because of the pandemic and more similar to Warnock’s bid for re-election.

Jonae Wartel, Biden’s state director and a veteran of Warnock’s operation, said that when the margin for winning is very small, like it was in 2020, the campaign strategy needs to focus on organizing.

However, Biden’s support may decrease for various reasons such as inflation, the Israel-Hamas war, concerns about a surge in migrants at the U. S Mexico border, and worries about his ability to do the job at 81 years old.

What is Your Take on the STATEMENT BY REV Godfridah Sumaili THAT AVOID DEMONIC SEXUAL STYLES ?

0

Theologian Jpc Ntuntu What is Your Take on the STATEMENT BY REV Godfridah Sumaili THAT AVOID DEMONIC SEXUAL STYLES IN MARRIAGE?

I must state that I was reluctant to comment on this matter before I read the full article. Now that I have read the article here is my one cent on the matter

1. Rev Sumaili was quoted out ofcontext. The Flashing Headline was meant to attract wider readership and greater attention.

2. The interviewer asked her a question in relation to what people are watching on social media and obviously the internet. Honourable Sumaili in her tone discouraged couples from copying things from the internet and introducing them in their marriages. She actually emphasized that Couples must Exercise Mutual Respect for Each Other when it comes to sex.

3. Part of the content included her asking self searching questions like “Are you comfortable with it?” “The thing is that you have, a relationship, your husband, your wife, you have to feel comfortable,” she said. She added: “Be comfortable, there has to be dignity in everything you are doing. You respect your husband, you respect your wife as a human being.”

4. While there may be sexual styles she considers “demonic” based on her personal religious convictions – she advised that couples learn from the rich Zambian Culture, Uphold Christian Values and Maintain Mutual Respect in their enjoyment of their God given conjugal rights.

MY CONCLUSION BASED ON SCRIPTURE:
The Bible maintains a strong teaching for the Sanctity and Purity of the Marriage giving a stern warning that God will punish the sexually immoral and the adulterers ( Hebrews 13 vs 4).

However, the BIBLE DOES NOT GIVE ANY SINGLE PRESCRIPTION on how married couples should have sex. The Bible doesn’t discuss sexual positions or styles. The silence on the matter in the Bible is very loud. The Bible only encourages married people to maintain regular sexual intimacy with each other meeting each other’s emotional and sexual needs so that they are not tempted by Satan to seek sex or affection elsewhere (1 Corinthians 7 vs 3 – 5, Proverbs 5 vs 15 – 20).

Even the popular Missionary Style is not Prescribed in the Bible. God has given couples the freewill to decide what is best for themselves when it comes to Love Making in Marriage. The decision is yours, the choice is yours. As long as you are making love to your wife or your husband, how you do it is entirely up to the two of you. Only ensure that both of you are comfortable with the styles you choose to explore in your marriage.

WHAT TO AVOID

1. Avoid Pornography. Pornography is a home wrecker. It will destroy your marriage. If you are struggling with pornography hit my inbox. We can work together on the steps to healing.

2. Avoid forcing your wife or husband to engage in sexual styles and acts they are not comfortable with. Discuss the sexual adventures you fancy and reach mutual agreement. The primary goal in love making must be to satisfy your spouse and not yourself. It is only when we focus on the happiness of our spouse that we achieve true joy and become truly one flesh.

3. Avoid Protests and Keeping Grudges. Talk issues through and ensure that you reach peaceful resolution so that you get back to marital intimacy quickly. Protests are a recipe for infidelity. Soon you begin looking for affection or sex outside marriage.

4. Avoid Taking Each Other for Granted. Never assume that “My Wife/Husband Can’t Commit Adultery.” The truth is that we can all committ adultery, both male and female. No person regardless of their status is fully immune from falling into sexual sin. Couples must be ALWAYS be there for each other in order to prevent their marriage bed from being defiled.

IF YOUR MARRIAGE BED IS ALREADY DEFILED, REMEMBER THAT THE BLOOD OF JESUS IS AVAILABLE IN ABUDANCE TO CLEAN IT AND PURIFY IT.

SILENCING THE TRUTH: HICHILEMA TARGETS ONLINE MEDIA SPACE

Let the people speak freely!

The intentions by Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND to regulate digital and social media platforms is a very desperate and unfortunate move.

Recently, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services revealed plans to revise the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Act in order to provide for regulation of podcasts and online broadcasting. The government stated that it had detected the proliferation of online broadcasting, which is apparently unregulated. This announcement was made during the presentation of the IBA and ZNBC draft layman’s bills by technical working groups.

All these desperate oppressive manoeuvres confirm that Mr Hichilema and the UPND are ill-fitted to govern, unite, and see to it that this country progresses. It is clear the UPND wants to suppress free political expression to prevent private citizens from holding them to account. Their many failures have exposed them as incompetent and incapable of fulfilling the humongous campaign promises they made to the Zambian people.

Mr Hichilema and his league are increasingly getting desperate because they have seen that multitudes of citizens are frustrated and disgruntled, and now compelled to lose trust in our country’s processes and systems, and our democratic path in general. They are fully aware that the people have realised the kind of fraudulent leadership they voted for and are rising very fast to vote them out in 2026.

So, amidst this gloomy picture, the only recourse for Mr Hichilema and his government is to try and suppress public discourse, which they unquestionably know is against them. Things are not up to scratch, and Zambians are beginning to voice out their frustration and anger fearlessly. But Mr Hichilema thinks he can dodge responsibility by silencing citizens through such draconian laws. It will not work. Zambians will not allow Mr Hichilema to take us back to the dark days of the one-party rule.

Mr Hichilema and the UPND’s hypocrisy is actually scandalous. How can people who rode on the back of rogue media like Zambian Watchdog and Koswe, which operated on Facebook and other digital platforms to malign and maliciously defame private citizens as a way to put the UPND in power be against podcast and online broadcasting? What kind of human beings are these? Why do they think they have a reserved seat to act as they wish towards others, but the same should not be done to counter them? What is so special about them? What a rotten sense of entitlement and self-importance!

Today, they want to bully and suppress the same digital platforms they used to get into office when mainstream media was unfriendly to them. They expect their political competitors and citizens to keep quiet and standby and watch. We will resist it. These despotic manoeuvres to decimate critical voices will be bravely defied. This country is for all of us.

It is also shocking that they think they can fully regulate social media. These platforms are not Zambian owned, and they are accessible anywhere and everywhere, including in the diaspora, from where many Zambians can hold them to account for their corruption, divisiveness, and other unpatriotic tendencies. Are they going to regulate podcasts on Zambia operated from overseas? It is folly to think they can do this without being able to control the global online media space.

Besides, the affordances of social media allow citizens to operate incognito. We thought they knew this as a party that relied on anonymity, not to advance civil discourse, but to use insults, hook and crook to get into the same power that is now backfiring in their faces. Governance is not child’s play.

DON’T POLITICISE DROUGHT – KAVINDELE

0

Former Vice-President Enoch Kavindele says the current drought should not be politicised or indeed be blamed on the UPND government as it is a natural calamity.

President Hakainde Hichilema last month declared the country’s debilitating drought, attributed to the El Nino weather pattern, a national disaster and emergency.

“We are saying the crop has failed, not because UPND is in power, this is beyond us, there is drought in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa and parts of Angola,” he said in an interview.

“Drought is all over.” Mr Kavindele, who was Vice-President under Levy Mwanawasa when the country also experienced another drought in the early 2000’s, noted that this is not a new experience for the country.

“This happened also in 1991, we had to bring in maize from Brazil, that was yellow maize, indeed,” he said.

“Zambians are not used to eating yellow maize, so they complained, but it was certainly the right thing to do.”

Mr Kavindele said there is need to learn lessons from the current difficult situation in terms of utilising irrigation.

“And I’m very happy that the President [Hakainde Hichilema] has said that we have to improve our irrigation system,” he said.

Farms worth $15.6m grabbed by Stanbic Bank at Mkushi farm block put up for sale

Farms worth $15.6m grabbed by Stanbic Bank at Mkushi farm block put up for sale

At a time when the country is looking to be falling back on commercial farmers to grow winter maize to cover the wide gap left by severe damage to rain fed crops grown by mostly local small scale farmers, Stanbic bank has put out for sale, the repossessed seven high value commercial farms.

Stanbic bank has put out a notice for sale of commercial farms by mortgagee in possession on 6 March 2024. But the timing of the sale has come under question as the country is currently experiencing a severe drought and a state of national disaster has since been declared.

The South African lenders local unit in Zambia has put out for sale, the seven (7) repossessed commercial farms which have a total of 11 parcels of land, based at Zambia’s leading Mkushi farming block area of central province, a move that has shocked Agri-bussiness players and disaster mitigation experts, on options available to mitigate the drought impact.

According to a notice of sale of repossessed farms seen by the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, Stanbic bank has put out for sale the reposessed farm no. 2388, off great north road, Mkushi farming block worth about $4 million (about K100 million), another farm no. 2975 worth about $2.9 million.

Others put out for the sale off are farm no. 2987, farm no 3087, farm no 3490 to 3493, farm no 3500, farm no. 3502 and farm no 3145. All the eleven (11) parcels of land have a combined reserve value of $15.6 million (about K390 million).

The reserve price pegged by Stanbic Bank are grossly exaggerated and may indicate that the bank is working with highly inflated valuation figures as similar un-distressed farms for sale in the same area are selling for far much less.

When ZBT contacted Mkushi Farmers Association to find out why such a big number of farms had been repossessed over loans to Stanbic Bank, Association chairperson Miklos Murffy told ZBT that he has not engaged the specific farmers involved but confirmed that the low rainfall also adversely affect commercial farmers as dams don’t get filled to support the winter crop.

Murffy revealed that Mkushi commercial farmers are also facing significant challenges as a result of this draught that has hit Zambia. Most loans are contracted with repayments based on two crops. So when one crop fails mostly due to weather like drought, the repayments for loans become difficult.

On repossession, the Associations chairperson said that Zambia needs an institution like a land bank that can lend long term at low interest rates. The commercial banks seem to ignore some of the challenges like the long term nature of Agri-businesses.

He indicated that the interest rates that are obtained in Zambian banks are relatively high and come to about 12% for US dollar denominated loans. This is high when compared to other Agro producing countries and the returns farmers get.

The other challenge is that the banks are only lending for about 5 to 6 years, but farming is long term. Zambian commercial farmers also need access to long term and lower interest loans if farming is to grow and deliver its potential.

Farmers need loans that are for say 20 to 25 years, that can enable them to invest in dams for irrigation, centre pivots and drag irrigation systems, storage and other farm buildings and equipment, all which take a long time to get true value and repay back the loans.

Efforts to get a comment from Stanbic bank on the timing of this action and it’s impact on drought disaster mitigation plans were underway by press time.

Young Senegalese forced abroad by dual economic and political crises

0

As young people quit Senegal amid mounting economic and political hardship that has seen universities close and jobs dry up, local charities have moved in to stem the exodus by offering practical training aimed at helping vulnerable youth forge a path into the workplace.

The country has been thrown into political crisis over the past year over the jailing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and the violent supression of protests.

President Macky Sall was accused of seeking to maintain his grip on power amid disputed elections that were then delayed. A polling date has finally been set for 24 March.

The turmoil has had a ripple effect on the economy, with tourism in decline and most industries at a standstill.

Ayoba Faye, a journalist with private media group Walfadjri in Dakar and chief editor of the online newspaper Press Afrik, told RFI the postponement of the election had aggravated matters, particularly for young people.

“The country faces a political crisis, but also a social crisis and an economic crisis,” he said.

Young people lost many work opportunities after the government sold fishing licences to China and the EU, added. With the largest university closed for nine months “more and more of them are taking their pirogues to try and emigrate to Spain”. Rise in poverty

Known abroad as a haven of stability in a volatile region, Senegal has experienced a dramatic rise in poverty. More than a third of the population living under the poverty line, UN World Food Programme figures show.

Forty-one percent of Senegalese are under the age of 14 and many young people are focused on one thing: reaching Europe.

To do so, they typically travel the dangerous Atlantic route to Spain’s Canary Islands, which means days of sailing across treacherous seas.

The International Organisation for Migration said 14,976 migrants from West Africa had reached the Canaries between January and September 2023. It also said 424 people had either drowned or disappeared in crossings during that period.

More and more people are dreaming of taking their boats out “not for fishing but to leave the country”, economist N’Dongo Samba Sylla told RFI.

“When even demonstrating can lead to death because of state violence, what else can they hope for?” Call for training

Several organisations are focused on supporting young Senegalese facing unemployment – some of whom have returning to the country after a failed attempt to migrate.

Aspyre Africa, a UK-registered charity, provides access to vocational training for the country’s most vulnerable youth – especially those who feel they are unsuited for higher education.

It aims to propose practical and sustainable solutions that can remove barriers to entering the workplace.

Many young men go through Aspyre to learn how to become electricians, for example.

“In Senegal, a lot of young people lose hope because of unemployment,” trainee gardener Pape Moussa Diarra told RFI.

“I want to tell them that they can find support and get training to find a job that suits them, and then they’ll be able to help themselves and their family.”

One of the trainers, Lamine Tall, says social pressure has contributed to Senegal’s emigration problem.

“If a young man hears about another one who left for Europe and did well there, his family and his village might ask him, ‘Don’t you deserve the same?'” he says.

“That can get into people’s heads.”

Concerns ahead of Chad elections after death of main opposition figure

0

The death of Yaya Dillo – the main rival to transitional Chadian president Mahamat Idriss Déby in upcoming elections in May – has deepened the political strife plaguing the country.

The European Union and Human Rights Watch have called for an international investigation into Dillo’s death, which his party has labelled an assassination.

During a visit to Paris last Tuesday, Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra said he had agreed to the probe.

Presidential elections in May and June are meant to assure the return of constitutional rule to Chad, three years after military authorities seized power in a coup led by Déby.

However, Dillo’s killing during a shoot-out at his party’s headquarters last week has thrown a dark shadow over the polls.

While the junta says Dillo fomented an attack against Chad’s main security agency, his Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) party maintains that he was murdered.

‘Culture of death’
Even if calls for an international investigation are answered, experts say it is unlikely any conclusions will be drawn.

“A similar situation occurred in October 2022 after the deadly repression of protests, but the report is still not accessible,” African specialist Roland Marchal told RFI.

“The history of Chad is full of similar situations, from 1993 or 2008 for instance. Idriss Déby already had opponents killed and no one was ever arrested or punished.”

Observers have denounced the culture of impunity in the country, fearing that the opposition is now condemned to lose the election.

RFI’s Jean-Baptiste Placca, who covers Africa, has described the situation as a “depressing culture of death”.

Opposition politician Max Kemkoye agrees. “We are candidates for death. The tension is already here, troubles are here. It is an explosive cocktail,” he told told RFI.

Prime Minister Masra told RFI the government was committed to carrying out an international-style investigation that would “identify responsibilities at all levels”.

Rocky road to elections
Déby, announced his intention to contest the 6 May presidential poll three days after Dillo’s death.

Déby is the son of veteran leader Idriss Déby Itno, who ruled Chad with an iron fist for more than 30 years before being killed by rebels in 2021.

His son took power in a coup, and later promised elections after a transition period of 18 months.

But his regime has extended the transition by two years, authorising him to run in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“The election might be an easy win for Déby,” Marchal says.

“As his father before him, he will probably praise the people for the high participation rate, and France or the EU will remain silent, because stability in Chad is valuable.

“The double standards with other African regimes is obvious and it renders the EU less and less credible in central Africa and in the Sahel.”

Déby’s military government is one of several juntas in power in west and central Africa, where there have been eight coups since 2020.

Chad has long been a key partner for the UN and Western powers in the Sahel in the fight against terrorism, and is one of the last countries still hosting French troops in the region.

Recently Chad was forced to accept the dissolution of the G5 Sahel force after key members Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso cut ties with France and left the group.

Prime Minister Masra met with his French counterpart, Gabriel Attal, on Tuesday in Paris to discuss future cooperation between the two nations.

Campaigning starts for Senegal’s March 24 presidential vote

0

Campaigning got underway Saturday for Senegal’s March 24 presidential election, after weeks of turmoil caused by its delay, as one of the leading contenders met voters.

Khalifa Sall, a former mayor of Dakar, toured different neighbourhoods of the capital in the evening, greeting several hundreds of his supporters.

Of the 19 presidential candidates, he is seen as one of the main contenders to succeed President Macky Sall, who is not standing for re-election.

The vote was due to take place on February 25 but Sall plunged the country — usually a beacon of stability in a region fraught with military coups — into its worst crisis in years on February 3 by postponing the election, just before campaigning was due to begin.

That sparked street protests that left four people dead and international condemnation, while opponents accused Macky Sall of trying to remain in power beyond the scheduled end of his term on April 2.

Several hundred supporters of Khalifa Sall, who is not related to the outgoing president, waited for his arrival in a festive mood, singing and playing music, and cheered him upon his arrival.

The coalition of anti-establishment candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is currently behind bars but hoping to benefit from an amnesty law that would allow her to stand, was also due to begin a campaign caravan on Saturday and present its programme to the press.

Amadou Ba, the candidate picked to represent the outgoing president’s camp, was due to meet with his campaign team on Saturday.

Earlier, he met with Sidiki Kaba, who succeeded Ba as prime minister after he resigned on Wednesday to allow him to campaign for the presidency.

The fight to restore an election programme in the last few weeks spoke of the attachment to democracy in a country of 18 million people that is among the lowest 30 in the world for human development, according to the United Nations.

The campaign season will be limited to two weeks rather than the usual three weeks due to the need to find a successor before Macky Sall’s tenure is up next month.

Campaigning will largely take place during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan in a country that is majority Muslim.

Many electors have told AFP about their eagerness to vote and turn the page on the turbulence of recent weeks.

Rwandan ruling party picks Kagame as presidential candidate

0

Rwanda’s ruling party on Saturday picked President Paul Kagame as its candidate for the July election, teeing up a contest widely expected to return the longtime leader to office for a fourth seven-year term.

The 66-year-old has ruled over the landlocked African nation for decades, winning the presidency in elections in 2003, 2010 and 2017 — with more than 90 percent of the vote.

Kagame’s candidacy was unopposed during the Rwandan Patriotic Front congress, which ended Saturday, the party said.

Kagame said he had accepted the nomination but urged the ruling party to prepare for transition beyond him.

“The burden of responsibility to lead our country can be equated to a shock absorber against the challenges we face daily. It requires the right mindset,” he said.

“I accept this burden of responsibility, but with a call to get someone to relieve me of this responsibility.”

Kagame’s only known challenger in the July polls is opposition Green Party leader Frank Habineza.

The 47-year-old member of parliament secured only 0.45 percent of the ballot in the 2017 election, coming third in polls that rights groups criticised for irregularities and voter intimidation.

The other potential challenger to Kagame, Victoire Ingabire, leader of the unregistered Dalfa Umurunzi (Development And Liberty For All) movement, has been blocked from the presidential race due to a past conviction.

A court decision on whether she will be allowed to contest the presidency is set for March 13.

Rwanda will hold presidential and parliamentary polls on July 15 after the government decided last year to synchronise the dates for the votes.

Twenty-four women MPs, two youth representatives and a representative for disabled Rwandans will be chosen by electoral colleges and committees on July 16.

Candidates will be allowed to campaign from June 22 until July 12, according to the election calendar.

While Rwanda lays claim to being one of the most stable countries in Africa, rights groups accuse Kagame of ruling in a climate of fear that stifles dissent and free speech.

A former rebel chief, Kagame became president in April 2000 but has been the country’s de facto leader since the end of the 1994 genocide.

He presided over controversial constitutional amendments in 2015 that allowed him to run for more terms and stay in power until 2034.

WE ARE FACING A GREAT TRIBULATION EVER EXPERIENCED IN THE HISTORY OF ZAMBIA!- Joseck Kunda

WE ARE FACING A GREAT TRIBULATION EVER EXPERIENCED IN THE HISTORY OF ZAMBIA!

PUBLIC STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

Submitted by Mr Joseck Kunda.

This is the input and observations we expect to get from all our active members of the Organization. A wholesome and meaningful contribution indeed!

Once again thanks a lot Mr. Blammar Shimangwala our Ithedzi thedzi representative for coming out that way on the need to regulate Social Media and participate meaningfully in the development of our Country. It is sad that many of our members have remained mute and inactive on all matters affecting our Nation.

Others are quite and only react when they feel hurt about some articles. We all need to remember that we have a responsibility to contribute equitably in developing this Country. While we have a Government in place with the mandate to rule and preside over national issues, we are important stakeholders and at the end of the day, we will be affected by every decision made by the Central Government.

Recently when the Republican President His Excellency Dr. Hakainde Hichilema declared Draught as a Disaster, he called on everyone be it the Church, the Civil Society Organizations, Traditional Leaders, Political Parties, the Private Sector, Business Communities and the International Donors to come on board and help in resolving the economic crisis we are facing!

Last week, I had a privilege vising some districts in Southern Province starting with Kazungula, Livingstone, Zimba, Kalomo, Choma, Namwala, Bwengwa, Monze, Magoye, Pemba, Chisekeshi, Mazabuka, Chikankata and Nega – Nega. I also made a stop over in Kafuel Town before reaching Lusaka.

Colleagues this year is a Disaster! This natural calamity must not be underestimated. We are in for trouble. The crops have literally withered and dried up. This disaster is more than Hunger! Chances are high that this situation may culminate into a Famine!

I am not trying to be an alarmist neither am I creating a fearful impression. Politics aside we all need to come together to see how best we will fight and overcome this natural calamity that has struck our nation. I strongly feel that the Government has not fully comprehended the extent of the disaster. I hope that DMMU is not taking this matter lightly.

If possible the Vice President Her honor Mrs. Mutale Witika Nalumango must urgently constitute a Special Team under her Office that must include independent people comprising members from the Church, Civil Society Organizations, Traditional Leaders, Skilled Men and Women who delve in collection of Data and Information who must be tasked to undertake a robust and gigantic role engaging all our people across the Country.

It is shocking that waters in the Zambezi river at Kazungula Bridge are below the knees in many places. Fishermen are using the spears and simply catching the fish without using any fishing methods.

Yes we have had draughts in 1991 and 2001 but this year’s draught is incomparable! It’s the worst of it’s kind in the history of this Country. We must anticipate critical shortages of water not only for electricity generation but for domestic use in our homes.

Many homes especially in towns are not dependent on the supply from water utility Companies. Instead people have sunk boreholes. Due to the erratic rains this year, the ground will not be fully saturated and the foregoing will contribute to the water table sinking deeper in the ground.

There is a need engaging Borehole drillers once again to drill deeper in the ground. Additionally there will be a critical shortage of animal feed for those rearing some animal husbandly. As a result, the prices of Chickens, Meat products and other Daily products are likely to skyrocket.

We can not rule out the fact that food will be scarce and this will result in Malnutrition and Kwashiorkor not only among the children but also the elderly. Ailments like Diabetes, HIV, TB and several others have much to do with lack of necessary foods. Having a health and balanced diet is key for many of us to survive.

For instance ever since I was personally diagnosed to be a diabetic and hypotensive patient, I have been spending more money on my food than I used to in the past. I have also discovered that healthful foods are more expensive. I no longer eat any food that comes my way.

I am therefore calling on every thinking citizen of this Country to face the impending situation with liberalness, reasonableness, calmness and with soundness of mind. This disaster is real! Politicians must avoid using this situation in order to create a mileage out of it.

Remember the common expression, ‘If you are not infected, you are affected’.

Joseck Kunda – National Ambassador, Founder and Chief Executive Officer for the Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles.

SENIOR CHIEFS, BRE IN LUSAKA FOR A CONFIDENTIAL BAROTSELAND PRE DIALOGUE MEETING

By Barotseland Watchdog Intelligence Reporters

According to startling discoveries made by Barotseland Watchdog intelligence reporters, BRE and a few chosen teenagers surreptitiously travelled to Lusaka at midnight in order to participate in the Barotseland pre-dialogue meeting with Zambia.

The Zambian government has successfully purchased Senior Chief Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika, Chief Lukama, Induna Imandi, Barotseland Nationalist Youth Alliance, Boris Muziba, Mushokabanji Wamui, Munyinda Munukayumbwa, Makala Muyunda, and others for a secret pre – dialogue talks over the Barotseland issue.

The Judas Iscariotarian team arrived in Lusaka on Thursday, last week.

Lozi Judas, Prof. Oliver Saasa is the main facilitator of the dialogue on behalf of Zambian Government.

Ngambela Mukela Manyando, the chief traitor, has remained at Limulunga after sealing the dialogue deal.

Litunga Lubosi Imwiko II is acting shrewdly, acting as though he is not one of the dribblers and betrayers of the people of Barotseland through this dialogue.

While BWD intelligence reporters is there for during the dialogue discussion, we can promise you that darkness cannot bring good to the people of Barotseland. Good things can only come to the dark because of the light.

BWD’ s comment: ALL those who are doubting us, can check if Barotseland Nationalist Youth Alliance, Senior Chiefs and some BRE Indunas are in their palaces or homes. If you don’t find them for example at Naliele Palace, check if they are in Mongu or Limulunga. They are in hotels now. They are all well paid.
