ECOWAS: NIGER, MALI AND BURKINA FASO QUIT WEST AFRICAN BLOC

(BBC) Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have announced they are leaving the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

The junta-led countries had already been suspended from the bloc, which has been urging them to return to democratic rule.

The three governments said it was a “sovereign decision” to withdraw from Ecowas.
They were also founding members of the bloc, first established in 1975.

In a joint statement – that was read out on state broadcasters in the three countries – they said Ecowas had “drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.”

It goes on to say that Ecowas “under the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to member states and peoples,” adding that the bloc had failed to help them tackle the jihadist violence in their countries.

Tensions between the bloc and the three countries have been tense after military coups took place in Niger in July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.

Ecowas has called on all three countries to return to civilian rule.

And in a response to Sunday’s announcement it said the three countries were “important members of the Community” and the bloc “remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse”.

It also said it had not yet received formal notification from the countries about their withdrawal from the bloc.

According to the Ecowas treaty, member states wishing to withdraw must give written notice a year in advance, and continue to abide by its provisions during that year.

Despite suspension from the bloc, sanctions, negotiations and threats of military intervention, the military leaders have hardened their stance, accusing the bloc of being influenced by external powers.

In September, the three countries formed a mutual defence pact called The Alliance of Sahel States, distanced themselves from former colonial power France and strengthened ties to Russia.

The three military leaders have argued that they want to restore security before organising elections as they struggle to contain jihadist insurgencies linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

Niger’s military leaders have said they want up to three years for a transition back to civilian rule.
The military government in Mali had pledged to hold elections in February, but that has now been pushed back to an unknown date.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso has set elections for this summer, but authorities there say the fight against the insurgents remains the top priority.

A delegation from Ecowas was due to travel to Niamey for a meeting with the junta in Niger on Thursday to discuss sanctions on the country.

However, the aircraft that was meant to take the delegation there developed “technical problems” in Abuja and the meeting was postponed.

DO NOT BE CHEATED ABOUT THE BAROTSELAND AGREEMENT

DO NOT BE CHEATED ABOUT THE BAROTSELAND AGREEMENT

They lie that the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 is what made Barotseland a part of Zambia! Far from the truth.

The Barotseland Agreement of 1964 was a last ditch effort by a Litunga who had been disappointed by his people because MaLozi people voted against his wishes. When it was apparent that Britain was granting Independence to Northern Rhodesia Litunga Mwanawina demanded to secede from Northern Rhodesia. The British said NO. Litunga and some white settlers who didn’t want Black rule sponsored a separatist party which was called Sicaba Party which was only active in Barotse Province!

The Litunga and his ruling class unleashed violence on UNIP and ANC political activists and banned them from campaigning within Barotseland. The Litunga demanded that UNIP and ANC, the two Nationalistic Independence movement parties must not field candidates in Barotseland because they could never win against the Sicaba Party!

The Governor of Northern Rhodesia told the Litunga that since he was so sure that UNIP and ANC could not win he should let them contest the elections in preparation for Independence.

Litunga Mwanawina Lubosi told the Governor that if the Nationalist Movements would lose the Elections in Barotseland, then He would have the right to secede it from Northern Rhodesia before independence takes place.

Barotseland had two Parliament seats! UNIP and ANC political activists were banned from campaigning mwa Bulozi and they had to campaign at night to avoid being lynched by the Litunga”s sponsored thugs! The Sicaba Party on the other hand were bought a Land Rover and funded to the tune of £240, which was a lot of money back then for campaigns! Despite the fact that the Litunga”s preferred Sicaba Party was campaigning freely throughout Barotseland in a Land Rover and had money to bribe voters with, while UNIP and ANC were banned from holding any campaign meetings in the Barotse Province, the two UNIP candidates, Mubiana Nalilungwe and Arthur Ñututluti Wina won with massive landslide victories.

In 1963 demands were made that the Katengo should be made an elective body instead of having appointed representatives! Elections were organized and planned for January 1964. Again the Litunga and his ruling class at Namuso (Lyaaluyi) backed the Sicaba regionalist party and demanded that if it won those Katengo Élections, then Barotseland would march to independence as a separate country! Again the results were a disaster for the Litunga Mwanawina 3. UNIP which was banned from campaigning within Barotseland again scooped all the 25 Katengo seats!

That UNIP victory is what killed the Litunga Mwanawina’s secession wishes.

The people of Bulozi had spoken through the Ballot that they wanted to be part of the Nation of Zambia. The people of Bulozi outright rejected their Litunga”s selfish motivés by voting against the Litunga’s wish. Because the Sicaba Party failed to win even a single seat in the Katengo Mwanawina had no moral standing to demand for Secession.

Mwanawina was using those elections as a referendum for him to secede if the Nationalist Movements lost against his preferred Sicaba party! To his disappointment the United National Independence Party (UNIP) which was the party he hated the most won both the Katengo and Parliamentary Elections with landslides.

The Malozi had stabbed their Litunga in the back. Mwanawina was stranded because his desire was thwarted by his own people through the ballot. Following this disappointment, Mwanawina appealed to the Secretary for the Colonies on how to preserve his rights and privileges under the new Government! The newly elected near future Prime Minister of soon to be independent Northern Rhodesia, Kenneth Kaunda and Litunga Sir Mwanawina were invited to England where the Barotseland greement was signed.

Contrary to what the Secession propagandists tell you the Barotseland Agreement was not a marriage certificate between Barotseland and Zambia. Barotseland was already an integral part of Zambia (Former Northern Rhodesia). What the Barotseland Agreement did was to safeguard Mwanawina’s selfish interests which he failed to secure through his Sicaba Party. The Agreement gave Mwanawina powers to have his own taxation system, powers over management of forests, etc. The Agreement did not create Zambia. Zambia already existed as Northern Rhodesia – one entity that was governed by one Governor representing. Barotseland was simply a Protectorate within that Colony of Northern Rhodesia!

You may be wondering why the MaLozi voted against the wishes of their Litunga and chose to back one of the Nationalist Movements instead of the Sicaba Party! According to my late grandfather, The MaLozi people didn’t want to be indirectly colonized by the White Settlers from Southern Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe) Those white settlers are the ones who bought the Land Rover and provided the £240 for the Sicaba Party. By voting for the Sicaba Party, the MaLozi people would have sold Barotseland to the financiers of that regionalist party who would obviously want to reap some benefits from the victory of the party they sponsored! The other reason was that the majority MaLozi never ascribed to Litunga Mwanawina’s desire to secede Barotseland from the rest of the country. Third, the Litunga received massive financial support from the UK government which benefited only the Litungas and their immediate families and dependants and not the majority MaLozi people! In short our Litungas have been selfish, self centered gluttonous manipulators who used those financial resources on themselves and those close to them. And this is the case to date. The educated MaLozi back then felt that if that selfish clique was given the opportunity to handle their affairs, the status quo would remain!

That is the History they don’t want you to know! The BA 1964 was not a marriage between Zambia and Bulozi! The BA 1964 was a desperate attempt by a Litunga who had lost the support of his people to salvage some economic authority!

You may be wondering why Kaunda signed it. UNIP was in a hurry to free this country from colonial rule. The Litunga’s manœuvres were delaying the march towards independence!

DON’T BE CHEATED.
Even those saying if they attained Political Power, they would restore the Agreement are liars! If you read that agreement you’d notice that it indirectly creates a “state within a state”, and no president will ever grant that, not even a Mulozi President will tolerate it

Uganda Rubbishes The Embarrassing Dissenting Opinion Of The Ugandan Judge Sitting On The International Court Of Justice

UGANDA RUBBISHES THE EMBARRASSING DISSENTING OPINION OF THE UGANDAN JUDGE SITTING ON ICJ
=======================
Uganda has today issued a statement affirming it recognises this week’s order by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, and also disassociating itself from a dissenting judgment by Judge Julia Sebutinde.

Foreign affairs PS Bagiire Vincet Waiswa said the ICJ order for Israel to prevent genocide acts in Gaza is in line with the position of the recently concluded 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held in Kampala on 19 – 20 January, 2024.

The Heads of State and Government of the NAM condemned the continuing Israeli military campaign against the defenseless Palestinian people, and deplored the killing of over 21,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in the period between October and December 2023.

Judge Sebutinde dissentED from the majority in the ICJ Order, arguing that the dispute between the State of Israel and the people of Palestine is essentially and historically a political one, calling for a diplomatic or negotiated settlement, and for the implementation in good faith of all relevant Security Council resolutions by all parties concerned, with a view to finding a permanent solution whereby the Israeli and Palestinian peoples can peacefully coexist. In her opinion, this is not
a legal dispute susceptible of judicial settlement by the Court.

The Government categorically clarifies that, the position taken by Judge Sebutinde is her own individual and independent opinion, and does not in any way, reflect the position of the Government of the Republic of Uganda,” he said.

The NAM called for an immediate end to the Israeli military aggression and siege on the Gaza Strip and for immediate, unimpeded and sufficient humanitarian assistance at scale, to meet the enormous needs of the Palestinian civilian population and to enable urgently needed reconstruction and recovery, in accordance with the recent Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on this matter.

They also rejected any individual or mass forcible transfer and deportation of Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including to any other country, which amounts to a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions.

UGANDA statement

STATEMENT ON THE ORDER BY THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE REGARDING THE APPLICATION OF THE CONVENTION ON THE PREVENTION AND PUNISHMENT OF THE CRIME OF GENOCIDE IN THE GAZA STRIP (SOUTH AFRICA v. ISRAEL): 26 JANUARY, 2024

The Government of Uganda takes note of the Order by the International Court of Justice, issued on 26th January, 2024 with regard to a case by the Republic of South Africa, on the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

In this regard, the Government of Uganda affirms its association with the decisions and positions of the recently concluded 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held in Kampala on 19 – 20 January, 2024, as contained in the Kampala Final Outcome Document, and the Political Declaration on Palestine. Among other things, the Heads of State and Government of the NAM:

• Condemned the continuing Israeli military campaign against the defenseless Palestinian people, and deplored the killing of over 21,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in the period between October and December 2023, over 70% of whom were children and women, and the wounding and maiming of over 55,000 Palestinian children, women and men in bombardments by air, land and sea by the Israeli occupying forces, as well as ongoing attacks by occupying forces and settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, that killed over 300 Palestinians, including 79 children, and wounded more than 3,800 people in the same period, in addition to the killing of 200 other Palestinians in 2023.

• Called for an immediate end to the Israeli military aggression and siege on the Gaza Strip and for immediate, unimpeded and sufficient humanitarian assistance at scale, to meet the enormous needs of the Palestinian civilian population and to enable urgently needed reconstruction and recovery, especially of homes and vital infrastructure, including in particular of hospitals, schools and water, sanitation and electricity networks, in accordance with the recent Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on this matter.

• Rejected any individual or mass forcible transfer and deportation of Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including to any other country, which amounts to a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions.

The Government of Uganda further notes the opinion of Judge Julia Sebutinde on the matter. The Government categorically clarifies that, the position taken by Judge Sebutinde is her own individual and independent opinion, and does not in any way, reflect the position of the Government of the Republic of Uganda.

What is in a name- the Case of Chiefs who are truly Kings

What is in a name- the Case of Chiefs who are truly Kings.

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Colonial authorities abolished kingdoms in Africa and in their place named them chiefdoms even when they were truly kingdoms with sprawling land, people and their hierarchy established them as such.

In many cases these Kingdoms qualified to be monarchs as the King was sovereign and the establishments were self governing territories and actual independent nations.

In Africa, we now only have Morocco, Lesotho (constitutional monarchies and Eswatini (absolute monarchy) now remaining in Africa.

But many Kingdoms, because of colonial legacy now exist as chiefdoms, within larger states and nations with diminished powers and influence.

In many cases they have been reduced to just traditional roles and limited or symbolic authority.

However some countries have attempted to restore the dignity and respect of these historical establishments stripped away by colonial authorities.

In South Africa, the title of King was restored on King Goodwill Zwelithini and has been legally recognized and enjoys symbolic and other powers related to his throne.

So is the King Asantehene of the Ashanti people.

In Zambia we have recognized traditional authorities and the highest in ranking is the Paramount Chief, followed by a senior chief, and Chief.

Village headmen and sub chiefs could be listed but are not recognized with government fringe benefits as the above.

So we have a sad case of where legitimate kings are still referred to as Chiefs.

Sadly, this is because we have not amended the colonial laws that abolished any kingdoms but re-established and recognized as chiefdoms, with a 1935 map showing “tribal territories” and their Chiefs as the current standing authority.

However the chiefs still enjoy some rights, powers and authority over land and are allowed to establish traditional courts to deal with dispute related to customary law.

So clearly, what we need to advocate is the the repeal of the law.

In Zambia, by amendment of the law, maybe we need at-least rename the current paramount chiefs; the Litunga, the Chitimukulu, the Mpezeni and the Kalonga-Gawa Undi and help revert to their original titles of Kings.

When I served as Permanent Secretary in Western Province I learnt quickly that the Lozi people and the royal Kuta insist that you address the Litunga as His Majesty, the Litunga and not as His Royal Highness.

Recently the Bemba Royal Establishment decreed that the the Chitimukulu must be addressed as His Majesty and not ad His Royal Highness.

By all accounts he is a King and the title of His Majesty is befitting whether bestowed or not.

And they are right.

For what is in a name or title is dignity or lack of it.

What’s your say on the matter?

TROUBLE WITH THE LOCHNER CONCESSIONS

The celebration of the signing of the Lochner Concession was shortlived.

Rev. Coillard was a trusted confidante of the royal court and the royal family, and who was doing the detailed interpretation to the terms of the Agreement.

His failure to notice that the men were not from Britain or the High Commissioner’s colonial office in Cape Town, but from a team from a private company, became a highly regrettable and historical error.

The Lochner Concession instead of offering and guaranteeing a British Protectorate, were in fact, seeking exclusive exploration and mineral rights, and land appropriation and concession.

The Concession signed gave away large territories beyond the reign of the Kingdom.

The Concession was similar to the Rudd Concession with Lobengula, where the BSAC signed the Rudd Concession with King Lobengula for exclusive and open-ended mining rights in Matabeleland, Mashonaland and other adjoining territories.

Upon discovery of this, Rev.Coillard regretted hosting Lochner as a broker and interpreter for his BSAC entourage.

Frank Elliot Lochner, Alfred Sharpe and Joseph Thomson were sent to these territories by Cecil Rhodes to negotiate treaties that would secure mineral wealth and land rights from potentates in their respective principalities offering British(BSAC) protection in return.

Yet Lochner and his men had no authority or jurisdiction to make treaties on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

Rev. Coillard wrote to Rev. J. Smith; “Lochner exploited my generosity which my vocation imposes on me and exploited my hospitality”.

Lochner also confirmed Coillard’s feelings in a letter to a Mr. Harris, “I am sure the BSA Company owes much to Mr. Coillard than to myself in having secured the Barotse Country”.

Another person who opposed the Lochner Concession was a young Englishman, George Middleton, a lay helper at the Paris Mission Society until 1887 and turned ivory trader.

He called it “an immense sale of the country”.

He advised King Lewanika to write a protest letter and repudiate the concession to Lord Salisbury, the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

The letter was written to the Prime Minister and a demand to disavow it. Part of it read:

“He (the King) states that the objects of the Company were not explained at the same time as they were written in the document purporting to be the Concession as agreed upon.”

“The King is very indignant at the sweeping nature of the agreements, and the very exclusive terms of the rights to have been conceded by him to the Company, and further states that he repudiates the document in question in its entirety, as he didn’t understand the meaning of the document”.

Another missionary, James Johnstone, a photographer, medical doctor and explorer from Jamaica took six Jamaicans on his journey to cross central africa from west to east in the footsteps of David Livingstone.

He arrived in Mungu on 3rd December 1890 and was hosted by Rev. Colliard at the Barotseland Mission at Sefula.

On new’s year day on January 1891, Johnstone’s party witnessed a religious occasion deemed to be Zambia’s first white wedding ceremony.

King Lewanika’s son, Litiya was getting married to Katusi.

Tables and Chairs were set.

The high table was set to include King Lewanika, his wives, his sister, Mukwayi.

Johnstone stated that King Lewanika could not be allowed by his Indunas to sit at the high table as it had women and the chair set for the bride was empty as she refused to sit on it.

Johnstone claimed that the bride had never sat on a modern chair, but infact it was a traditional act of reverence in the presence of husbands, for the wife to sit on the floor.

His diary recorded that Johnstone arrived on 3rd December 1891. Johnston’s party were offered free shelter by King Lewanika.

Johnstone states that King Lewanika told him how he had written to the British asking that his kingdom should be made a British Protectorate.

He had waited for years for a reply and then men had arrived with papers claiming that they had the power to make this happen.

The King was reassured as the local missionary, Monsier Coillard, who was his interpreter at the meeting, and the King was reassured by Coillard’s confidence in these men.

Lewanika had been thankful that his wish had been granted and he had sent two enormous elephant ivory tusks as a present for Queen Victoria.

Lewanika was incensed to find that the men were from a South African company and that the ivory tusks were not with Queen Victoria but probably as ornaments in an office room.

Johnstone also assisted King Lewanika to write another letter of protest.

Lewanika was to prove a great help to Johnstone as he was able to command assistance for Johnstone, from nearby subordinate chiefs on his journey.

GETTING FRANK WITH FRANK – I’M MY OWN PERSON

GETTING FRANK WITH FRANK – I’M MY OWN PERSON

WITH a career that bestrides seven presidents, two political systems and generations of reporters, Frank Mutubila is definitely the last man standing, outlasting all his contemporaries in the game, and outliving most of them.

And yet the 71-year-old broadcaster, who is fondly known as Uncle Frank, is not about done.

No. He actually has an after-life plan for his career.

“Retiring? No. I can’t think of it. I may slow down, but I will keep on broadcasting. And even when I go to Heaven, I will be broadcasting there,” he says.

But the broadcaster, who won one of the highest medals from the President for distinguished service to the nation in 2022, did not start as a broadcaster.

In fact, his mother wanted him to grow up into a preacher like his father.

Frank was only nine when his dad died, but he says he left a lasting impact on his life.

“He impacted me greatly. I was actually in awe of this man, he was an incredible communicator,” he says.

But he also speaks about the impact that his death had on him.

“When he died, I was lost. I was actually angry with God,” he says. “It took me 30-40 years for me to stop mourning him.”

After graduating from high school, Frank found himself working for the Zambia Dairy Produce Board, but he was very bad with figures and so he did not last on that job.

He then followed his passion – football – and joined City of Lusaka Football Club, playing alongside Peter M’hango, who played in the national team.

His exposure soon got him a job in the Ministry of Transport, but he hated the uniform and quit a few months later, after seeing an advert for announcers to join the Zambia Broadcasting Services (ZBS), before it was changed to ZNBC.

And after being interviewed by Charles Muyamwa, the man whose name he still swears by, he walked into the studios of ZBS and never looked back. That was December 31, 1970.

“I knew from the beginning that I was tailor-made to be a good presenter, a good producer and a good interviewer,” he says.

Some of his contemporaries were: Charles Mando, Jeff Sitali, Mani Sichalwe, Fred Chunga, Mario Malio, Emelda Yumbe, and Hagai Chisulo.

They are names he mentions with a deep sense of nostalgia, pride and loss.

“My colleagues, my great friends, they have all passed away; that really hurts,” he says.

To Frank, being a journalist is about making a difference in people’s lives, something he says still drives him today.

“The money may not have been enough, but we had the passion. Making a difference to people is amazing,” he says.

He still exhibits deep passion for broadcasting, hopping from one studio to another, but he has also had to evolve over the years to stay in the fast-changing game.

And he also does not hide his frustration about the quality of journalism being exhibited in the country. He has a damning assessment of the current state of journalism.

“The quality of journalists today leaves much to be desired,” he says. “There is a sense of laziness.”

He thinks part of the problem is the training, which he says in many cases is done by people who have never practised as journalists themselves.

He also thinks media houses should be run by people with media background.

“Perhaps we need a policy that the people who own media outlets, especially private media outlets, have some kind of media background. I’m not saying they will make good media managers, but it is an added advantage,” he says.

Frank also thinks self-censorship, which causes journalists to fall into the trap of politicians, is killing the profession.

PAYING THE PRICE FOR FAME

Like many people who have walked in the limelight for a long time, Frank has had to pay the price that comes with it.

And looking back, he has some regrets, and given another chance, he says he would do things differently.

“I would choose the people I hang around with a bit more cautiously than I did. I think perhaps we were too open; perhaps we were a bit too careless…. I could have done with a bit of caution; I could have done with choosing certain social places carefully,” he says.

“I’ve gone to social places more often than I would have loved to because I’m free with everybody, but I forget, sometimes I get carried away and I forget that I’m a public figure and I need to be cautious with my life.”

But he also thinks people misjudge him just because he is a public figure.

“People think they know you just because they see you,” he says.

“I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I think the good outweighs what they perceive as my bad side,” he says.

Frank also feels society has judged him perhaps too harshly over his divorces.

Frank Mutubila married his first wife when he was 22. His wife was a 21-year-old banker.

“It was a great marriage,” he says.

A few years later, they both went to London for a short stay. Frank was attending a course with the BBC, while his wife was working for Zanaco Bank, which had a branch in London at the time.

But when it was time to return home, his wife decided to stay with their son.

“After three years we divorced amicably. She’s still a great friend, we communicate very often,” says Frank.

But it was the second divorce with Evelyn Tembo, a vivacious TV news anchor who once worked with him at ZNBC that left him devastated and almost ruined his life.

“The second one was ugly. It was a great relationship when it started, maybe because we both worked in the same profession. The divorce was very ugly. It was played out in the media,” he says.

“Apart from the death of my dad, my second divorce was perhaps my lowest. I can’t wish a bad divorce on anybody,” he adds.

Frank found help at his church, Miracle Life.

But he also used his skill and passion to get over it. He started producing a radio talk show called “The Art of Marriage” where he featured different people talking about marriage.

“That programme helped me a lot,” says Frank.

But he also found comfort in his family, including his three children.

“I have moved on,” he says, although he now has radicle opinion about marriage.

“I’m going to say something that perhaps people won’t be happy [with], but for me, my wife is not my relative, a husband is not a wife’s relative. I’m saying this because this is how I feel; my wife is not my relative. My children are my relatives,” he says.

But he also encourages people to speak out and share their pain when going through a divorce.

“Sometimes I have been accused by some people of speaking too much about my divorce, but it makes me feel much better when I share with somebody,” he says.

Frank is in a relationship, but more cautious about falling in love and committing again.

“I’m cautious because of what I have experienced and I take it easy. I have enough relatives who give me good genuine happiness,” he says.

But he does not rule out walking down the aisle again.

“Although I’m 71, I’m not closing the door; you are only as old as you feel,” he says.

And he sure does feel young.

He is a real dandy when it comes to keeping up appearances, and loves his glass of red wine and socialising.

He lives by the philosophy if it makes you happy, do it; just as long it does not harm you.

“I’m my own person; as long as what I’m doing with my body doesn’t raise any dust or come in the way of my decision making, I’m fine,” he says.

Once, when he was a young TV broadcaster, he went from a kinky afro to a wet-look. It almost cost him a place in President Kenneth Kaunda’s press corp.

Frank is still unconventional in a number of ways.

When he was ambassador in Italy, about 10 years ago, he walked into a tattoo parlor and had a large tattoo engraved on his right torso – from shoulder right down to his waist.

That was only an addition to the one he did earlier – the names of his sisters and daughter beautifully tattooed on his lower left arm under a praying hands artwork.

“Tattoos are very addictive,” he says, and does not rule out going for another one.

CONTENT WITH LIFE

Despite living under the spotlight, Frank says he has learned to be content and humble in life.

“I’m really not envious. I don’t have expensive stuff that you can talk about. I’ve got a house which I co-owned with my ex-wife; I drive a modest vehicle… when I came back from Italy I was driving a Mini [Cooper]. For me the most important thing is just to humble yourself, enjoy life… For me health is very important,” he says.

To keep fit, the broadcaster takes long walks of up to 16km on some days. He also continues playing sports like golf and lawn tennis, and attending social events such as lunches, and remains a Manchester United fanatic since his teen years.

He has also only recently reluctantly abandoned one of his favourite pastimes – karaoke – after taking up certain responsibilities.

Recently, Frank was appointed to the board of the Zambia Daily Mail, and he has also been appointed brand ambassador for Zambia Airways.

After 53 years, Frank continues to do what he has always done best – producing talk shows. He now spends most of his time at Capital FM, as well as hosting TV talk shows on Prime TV and Diamond TV.

When asked if he would choose to be a journalist if given another chance, he blurted: “Yes, yes, I can’t even blink. It is the best job,” he said.

“I knew that at one time I was going to do something that made a difference to people, and what better than being a media person?” he says.

Actually, he considers it a calling from God.

“This is a career that is bestowed on me by God. It’s a lifelong job,” he says.

“I have never taken my talent for granted neither have I taken my successes for granted. I’m driven by the phrase I coined, which says ‘do your very best and God will do the rest’.

And how would he want to be remembered?

“Just a simple son of a reverend who tried to make a difference to the country and to the world,” he says.

Wife ends 15 year old Marriage with husband, for calling her parents “D0G”

DOG SLUR LEADS TO COUPLES DIVORCE

A dog slur has sparked a row in a marriage leading to a divorce in the Matero Local Court, ending 15 years since Ruth Banda and Diton Kambunga tied the knot.

Banda filed for divorce against Kambunga citing disrespect for her parents after he allegedly called them dogs.

Banda also said she sued her husband for divorce because he got all the property she bought, including a house.

She said Kambunga, 50, claimed he got the property because he was the one who got her a job which enabled her to earn money to buy property.

The couple got married in 2009 and have one child together. Dowry was paid.

“My husband called my parents dogs. I cannot stay with such a man. He does not like a son he found me with and he threatens to kill him,” she said.

Banda said on December 4, 2023 her husband left home around 14:00 hours claiming that he was working night shift.

Banda said she was surprised that her husband returned home around 17:00 hours and started insulting her in the presence of their children and neighbours.

She said after his verbal attack on her, she decided to leave home and went to spend a night at her relative’s place.

“When I returned back home the following day I discovered that my husband had shifted and had gone with all our property. I was so shocked, his mobile phone was off. I did not know where and how to find him,” she said.

Banda said after a few days her husband went to her home but claimed that the property he got was his as he was the one who helped her secure a job to buy property. In his statement, Kambunga said when he married his wife he was not working but he managed to secure her a good job.

He said his wife acquired property in secrecy and put her brothers’ names on the title deeds.

In his judgment, magistrate Gaston Kalala noted that the couple had been having marital disputes and that their families equally failed to reconcile them.

He upheld the divorce claim and granted free divorce.

Mr Kalala gave custody of the child to the complainant and ordered Kambunga to be maintaining the child with K500 monthly.

Mr Kalala ordered the two to share property which they acquired together equally.

Sean Tembo sends evidence to DPP to prove that UPND SG referred to the Archbishop of Lusaka Alick Banda as “Lucifer of Zambia”

0

THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gilbert Phiri has refused to grant Patriots for Economic Progress president Sean Tembo permission to privately prosecute UPND secretary general Batuke Imenda, who has been accused of using hate speech against Archbishop of Lusaka Alick Banda.

In a response letter to Mr Tembo’s request, Mr Phiri said he could not grant the plea because he had not seen any evidence showing that Mr Imenda had used a Computer System when he committed the alleged offence as required by Section 65 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act No.2 of 2021 of the Laws of Zambia.

But Mr Tembo told court today that he has since collected data which he presented to Mr Phiri to show that Mr Imenda, indeed, used a Computer System when he committed the alleged offence.

This is in a case Mr Tembo sued Mr Imenda over use of hate speech when he purportedly referred to the Archbishop of Lusaka Alick Banda as “Lucifer of Zambia”.

Allegations are that on May 28, last year, Mr Imenda, in an audio circulation from a press briefing held at the UPND secretariat, allegedly uttered and published hate language against Archbishop Alick Banda.

It is alleged that the accused referred to the Archbishop as “the Lucifer of Zambia”.

Mr Tembo then wrote to the DPP seeking permission to privately prosecute the ruling party’s chief executive officer.

When the case came up before Lusaka magistrate Exildah Chanda, Mr Tembo told the court that he had written the DPP seeking permission to privately prosecute Mr Imenda, who was in court with his lawyer.

He said on last Wednesday, January 17, the DPP responded to his request and informed him that he(Mr Phiri) had not seen any evidence showing that Mr Imenda had used a Computer System when he committed the alleged offence.

Mr Tembo explained that on Monday, January 22, he wrote back to Mr Phiri and further enclosed a Flash Drive with video evidence showing that Mr Imenda used a Computer System when he committed the alleged hate speech.

He further told the court that he had four witnesses to aid his case before applying for an adjournment to give chance to the DPP to decide whether he is going to give consent, in view of the fact that the issue relating to evidential proof that Mr Imenda used a Computer System when he committed the alleged offense, had been addressed.

The case was adjourned to February 8.

ABOUT CDF AS A VEHICLE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT: A LOOK AT QUALITY ISSUES

ABOUT CDF AS A VEHICLE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT: A LOOK AT QUALITY ISSUES

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. When a Government spends taxpayers money to put up public infrastructure, that infrastructure must stand the test of time so that only minimal amounts should be spent subsequently to maintain such infrastructure. If money is spent on public infrastructure today and tomorrow such infrastructure needs to be replaced because it was of poor quality, then we are not going to make much progress as a nation. But perhaps a question arises as to what really constitutes high quality public infrastructure? Well, from my standpoint, it is infrastructure that is able to outlive a generation. Am sure we can all see how KK’s schools, hospitals, Police Stations, local courts etcetera, are still useful today with their signature asbestos roofs. That is because they were quality public infrastructure, and the nation is still deriving value from them today, more than 50 years later.

2. But can we say the same about public infrastructure that is currently being developed using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF)? The answer is a definite no. From the time that the UPND administration decided to use CDF as the main driver for public infrastructure development, we have been greeted with scenes of roofs being blown out of newly constructed schools and police stations, as well as newly constructed bridges being washed away, every rain season. So instead of the nation deriving value from this newly constructed infrastructure, for a lifetime, the way we have been able to derive value from KK’s infrastructure for decades, the infrastructure being developed under the UPND administration appear to be very temporal. They are disposable and only good for a very short period of time. But why is that the case?

3. Well, construction is a very specialized field which requires the active participation of different specialized professionals, if the final product is one that will stand the test of time. You need an Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineer etcetera. All these professionals need to constantly monitor and supervise the main contractor so as to ensure that building standards are adhered to at every stage of the way. However, these professionals are not involved in most CDF projects because of the way these projects are implemented and the amounts of money involved. For example, a particular constituency will award a tender to construct say two by three classroom blocks amounting to K800,000 to a particular contractor. This will most likely be the only project that this particular contractor has. The small nature of the project means that it is not financially viable for the CDF Committee to also contract an Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineer etcetera to design and supervise this project.

4. However, without the input and supervision of the relevant construction professionals, the final product ends up being of very compromised quality. For example, how can a Councillor or Village Headman tell the difference between 0.6mm roofing sheets and 0.3mm roofing sheets? Or tell the difference between 25MPa concrete and 10MPa concrete? Or the difference between 6mm glass and 3mm glass? Or the difference between Y16 deformed bars and Y10 deformed bars? Or the difference between a 6mm poly pipe and a 3mm poly pipe? They most definitely would not tell the difference until the roof of the school is blown away or the structure collapses.

5. That is why it has always been our argument that CDF should only be used for petty projects and not serious public infrastructure development. For public infrastructure such as schools, clinics, police stations etcetera, it is better for such projects to be implemented and supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure where there are qualified and experienced civil servants who are better placed to manage such projects. So if Government decides that in the 2024 fiscal year, they want to increase classroom space by constructing 2 by 3 classroom blocks at every Primary School across the country, the Ministry of Infrastructure should develop a Bill of Quantities (BoQ) which specifies quality parameters such as the strength of concrete to be used, the thickness of roofing sheets etcetera. The project can then be divided into different Lots with each Lot made up of say 100 schools. Each Lot can then be awarded to a Main Contractor, Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineer etcetera for implementation. Such an approach will ensure that when taxpayers money is spent to develop public infrastructure, such public infrastructure stands the test of time.

Anyway, the Future is SET

How Kenya’s judges stood up to President William Ruto

0

Following weeks of bitter rows and mud-slinging between President William Ruto and Kenya’s judges, two separate courts have ruled against the government, both on matters close to the president’s heart.

Firstly, a court on Friday ordered the government to stop taking payments for a new housing levy and just an hour or so later, a different court said the president could not send 1,000 police officers to Haiti, as Mr Ruto had promised the UN.

Analysts see this as a sign that Kenya’s judges remain fiercely independent despite what they see as the president’s attempts at intimidation.

Mr Ruto has recently launched a series of extraordinary attacks on the judiciary, accusing unnamed judges of corruption, while criticising those who went to court to stop government projects. He was responding to a previous series of rulings against his administration, one of which was last week overturned.

Before Friday’s rulings, a lawyer who was in the team that designed the current constitution told the BBC that Kenyans would, in light of the continued criticism of the judiciary, “be keen on seeing whether now, we are going to see decisions which are more favourable to the state”.

Bobby Mkangi said the rhetoric against the judges had been “engineered towards achieving an outcome where the judiciary will fall to the weight of the executive”.

But this does not seem to have happened.

Law Society of Kenya president Eric Theuri told the BBC after the ruling on the housing levy that while the criticism was “in a way intended to intimidate the court”, the outcome of the case was “not surprising” as the government had presented a “very weak case”.

“We expected and were hopeful that the court would be able to look at the law and make the decision on the basis of the law and not anything else,” he said.

In recent weeks, the president’s attacks on the judges triggered a backlash from Kenyans, including politicians and civil society.

Mr Mkangi said the “executive and presidency leading the onslaught” had created “pressure” against judges, adding that it remained to be seen whether this would translate to favourable rulings.

He said “the judiciary did indeed feel the pressure and felt commanded by the pressure” to request an unprecedented meeting linked to matters live in court between the chief justice and the president.

But he also mentioned the “philosophy of leadership” of Chief Justice Martha Koome, who requested the meeting, adding that this was bound to arouse suspicion.

The meeting on Monday became a subject of intense national debate, amid a perception that the judiciary was giving in to the executive.

Chief Justice Koome herself had warned that the “threats and declarations” against the judiciary were “extremely serious”.

She said they were an “assault against the constitution, the rule of law and the very stability of the nation and can lead to chaos and anarchy in our motherland”.

But her request to meet the president and her subsequent attendance raised questions.

Kenyan advocates hold placards during a picket following a protest call to members by the Law Society of Kenya against recent remarks by Kenya’s President, William Ruto, accusing the judiciary of wide spread corruption and lacking in integrity, in the Central Business District in Nairobi on January 12, 2024.

Mr Theuri, the LSK president, told the BBC the outcome of the meeting appeared as if the judiciary had gone to the executive with a “begging bowl… Ultimately it goes towards undermining judiciary’s independence and autonomy.”

Ekuru Aukot, the leader of the opposition Third Way Alliance, told a local television station that the chief justice had allowed herself “to go into dialogue with the person intimidating them”.

The BBC contacted the government spokesman’s office and the presidency for comment on the accusations of undermining the judiciary.

After the meeting, statements by both the chief justice and the presidency maintained that they were committed to upholding the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

The chief justice said they had agreed that specific measures would be presented to speed up corruption cases.

It was also resolved that MPs and the government would support increased funding for the judiciary, including to hire more judges.

Despite the meeting, the criticism of the judges continued.

On Thursday, the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) said it had “noted with deep concern the continued atavistic attacks against the judiciary, individual judges and magistrates by the political class even after the tripartite meeting”.

It said the courts would now consider taking legal action against individuals attacking the judiciary, individual judges, and magistrates.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court took the extraordinary step of indefinitely barring prominent pro-government lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi from appearing before it, after accusing him of “running a campaign aimed at scandalising, ridiculing and out-rightly denigrating this court”.

Mr Abdullahi said it was a “badge of honour” on X, and later said that he would file a petition against the ban at the East African Court of Justice in neighbouring Tanzania rather than “waste time in Koome’s corrupt court”.

The rift between the judiciary and the political class is only expected to widen, as each side stands firm.

Despite the rulings, Mr Ruto has vowed to continue with the government’s projects, which may result in further confrontation with the judiciary.

There are fears that this could set the stage for other Kenyans to disobey court rulings, causing “anarchy” as the chief justice had warned.

The KMJA noted on Thursday that in the western town of Eldoret, “an elected political leader had mobilised and led a gang to destroy a property which is still the subject of litigation before the courts”.

As the court ruled on Friday, Mr Ruto said he had enough public support to continue with the housing projects, which he said was creating many jobs for young Kenyans.

“The will of the people of the people is the will of God,” he said, speaking in Swahili to a crowd at a town in central Kenya, adding that the plan would continue despite the temporary setback.

The president said the government would appeal against the ruling and parliament would work on a new housing fund act that would allow the programme to continue.

One can only imagine Mr Ruto’s reaction if that were then to be challenged in court.

Africa must go beyond rhetoric, focus on actionable plans – Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has encouraged Africa to go beyond rhetoric and dialogue to develop concrete strategies for transformative change.

These dialogues must critically examine the private sector’s obligations and expectations, as well as demand the same from the governmental sector, to achieve the desired Africa.

They must be representative of all sectors needed to bring prosperity, ensuring that the growth targets that area attained are sustainable, irrespective of future global challenges.

President Nana Akufo-Addo was speaking at the opening second edition of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2024, at the Peduase Lodge, in the Eastern Region.

He stated that the conversations should focus heavily on the development of sustainable farming practices.

This must be complemented with targeted investment and infrastructure for innovation and technology, especially in agribusiness and industry that boost production.

The President emphasized the importance of ensuring the agriculture sector’s resilience in the face of global challenges and climate change.

“I am encouraged that Africa now has a private sector that is ready, deliberate and eager to see to the 60-year-old dream of a united Africa manifest,” he noted.

To unlock the full potential of trade for prosperity, the President stated that it was important to prioritise efficient transport and logistics infrastructure, expedite trade processes, and emb

Furthermore, stakeholders should strive diligently to promote cross-border transactions without relying on foreign currencies.

He emphasised the importance of facilitating the free movement of people, products, and services across the continent, as outlined in the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA).

The President hailed the African Prosperity Dialogues as a worthwhile endeavour that aimed to promote understanding, dialogue, and commitment to achieving the AFCFTA’s goals.

He applauded the organisers for their efforts in bringing together the high-profile resource persons and stakeholders, saying, “This will leave no one in doubt that this is a project that requires all the support we can muster.”

“The Network provides a unique platform dedicated to mobilising Africa’s energetic private sector to own and drive the fulfilment of the promises that the AFCFTA presents,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo urged participants to work hard to achieve the goals of the programme, citing the continent’s ability to industrialize, add value to raw materials, and invest in social, digital, economic, and physical infrastructure.

Mr. Joaquim Alberto Chissano, former President of Mozambique and Chairperson of the Africa Forum pointed out that the continent’s leaders needed to get together to discuss and find solutions to the development challenges hindering Africa’s growth.

Mr. Njack Kane, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Prosperity Network Secretariat, stated that the programme’s strategic objectives included facilitating comprehensive dialogue, promoting regional integration, prioritising inclusiveness, and providing a platform for sharing best practices.

The summit will feature thematic roundtable discussions, high-level sessions, and a Presidential Gala Dinner, culminating in a High-level Presidential Dialogue session.

Mr. Wamkele Mene, the Secretary-General of AFCFTA, urged private businesses to take advantage of the opportunities offered under the initiative to expand their businesses.

The three-day programme, being held on the theme: “Delivering Prosperity in Africa; Produce, Add Value, Trade”, aims to address key issues hindering Africa’s progress and chart a course towards a more prosperous and inclusive future.

Russian troops deploy to Burkina Faso

A contingent of Russian military personnel flew into Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou on Wednesday in what appeared to be the first significant deployment of Russian troops to the West African country, two foreign security sources said on Thursday.

The junta-led country’s relations with Moscow have been in the spotlight since it booted out French troops in early 2023, fuelling speculation it would deepen security ties with Russia like neighbouring Mali, where Russian Wagner mercenaries operate.

The foreign sources in Ouagadougou did not have further details on the apparent deployment.

The African Corps channel on the Telegram messaging app, which claims affiliation with Russia’s Defence Ministry, said a group of 100 servicemen had flown to Burkina Faso to “ensure the safety of the country’s leader Ibrahim Traore and the Burkinabe people.

A further 200 would be deployed in the near future, it said on Wednesday.

Photos posted to Telegram on Wednesday by African Initiative, a pro-Kremlin Russian news agency that covers African affairs, showed men in army fatigues unloading equipment from a plane with a Russian flag and a blurred number on its tail.

The aircraft pictured on the sunbaked tarmac was an Il-76, long the workhorse of the Russian military.

African Initiative said the photos showed the arrival in Ouagadougou of the 100 Russian servicemen, who it said would also train their Burkinabe counterparts and help patrol dangerous areas.

Reuters could not immediately verify the photos or the information.

The deployment will add to Western concerns about Russia’s widening influence in Africa’s Sahel region, where a series of coups has swept Moscow-friendly juntas to power in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, reshaping a long-running regional conflict with insurgents linked to Islamic State and Al Qaeda.

Further cooperation could be on the horizon. The military leaders of Niger and neighbouring Chad paid separate official visits to Moscow in January.

Situmbeko Musokotwane responds to Emmanuel Mwamba’s foolishness over debt

0

Situmbeko Musokotwane responds to Emmanuel Mwamba’s foolishness over debt.

The Finance Minister writes below:

When then UPND government took over in 2021, the PF government had already DEFAULTED on both debts to Official Creditors and to the Private Creditors. And no solution was in sight. The defaulting was in the aftermath of the unsustainable debts acquired by the PF government. The PF government had earlier dismissed all advice, local and external, to slow down on debt because it was soon going to be a big problem.

The UPND government immediately set out to resolve the debt. Last year, the government without any doubt managed to restructure the country’s debt with the Official Creditors. That is done and dusted. It was therefore justified that the country indeed celebrated this leg of success with one category of the Creditors. At no point ever did the PF government get anywhere to reaching agreement with official creditors to restructure Zambia’s debt.

What remained is the debt with Private Creditors. Negotiations were promptly started with this category culminating in an agreement with them. Again, the PF government never ever reached any agreement with private creditors. Not even mere talks were ever initiated.

The understanding among all creditors and financial supporters (e.g. IMF, World Bank etc) is that the debt restructuring by all categories of creditors must be comparable. Accordingly the offer by the private creditors was interrogated by the other parties. The opinion of the other parties was that the offer by private creditors to restructure Zambia’s debt did not meet some criteria and therefore needed improvements.

At this stage further discussions are on going to reach understanding on what will constitute an acceptable proposal by private creditors to restructure Zambia’s debt.

Emmanuel Mwamba now sees this as failure. He is wrong!

Agreement with Official Creditors was sealed as indicated above. And now, efforts to reach agreement with private creditors are continuing so that debt restructuring is achieved in totality.
The UPND government has therefore made very good progress in resolving Zambia’s debt crisis. There is still somework remaining but the progress is there and this effort will succeed.

Emmanuel Mwamba was part of the PF government that caused this problem of debt and failed to address the same problem they caused. To this day the country continues to suffer from ripple effects of the debt crisis. And for all the money borrowed, the PF left behind pending development challenges like huge unpaid bills of fuel supplied, lack of teachers in schools, no classrooms, non functioning railway, deteriorating high ways, unpaid pensioners, etc.

It is amazing, therefore, that rather than recognize efforts being made to solve the debt problem that they left, Mwamba is relishing on temporal setbacks like that of the uncompleted restructuring of the private creditors. It is as if he derives satisfaction in the peoples suffering which his own government left on the people through the unsustainable debt they acquired.

The People Who Served Under Pf Make Hichilema’s Core Team. Stop The Blame Game – M’membe

THE PEOPLE WHO SERVED UNDER PF MAKE HICHILEMA’S CORE TEAM. STOP THE BLAME GAME – M’MEMBE

Fred M’membe says President Hakainde Hichilema must stop the blame game and get down to work.

Dr M’membe who heads the opposition Socialist Party Zambia wonders how Hichilema would go on with the blame of PF when the people who held key position also make a core team of his government.

He said Hichilema must just admit if he has failed. He said this in article below:

UNRAVELLING HICHILEMA’S ECONOMIC FAILURE BLAME GAME

It has now become a tradition for Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND to pass blame on Mr Edgar Lungu and the PF for their economic policy inertia without being introspective.

Who are the key economic managers in any government who are key advisors to the President on economic matters? It is the Central Bank Governor who is responsible for Monetary Policy and the Minister of Finance who is in charge of the fiscal policy, including being custodian of budget formulation and execution.

Now let’s look back: who was the substantive Central Bank Governor during Edgar Lungu’s rule? It was Dr Denny Kalyelye who was only removed 11 months before the August 2021 elections. So we can agree that substantively Mr Lungu’s monetary policy was anchored on Dr Kalyelye. So when you say PF left high inflation, then it should point to the office holder.

Who is the current Central Bank Governor. Same person. In addition, even the deputy served under Mr Lungu and is still there. So introspect if you want to blame Mr Lungu and PF who left the kwacha at k15.89 per to now K27.

Now let’s move to the Minister of Finance. In 2016, after PF won the election, what was Zambia external debt balance? Approximately $7 billion (I stand to be corrected). Who became the finance minister post-2016 elections? Mr Felix Mutati. How much debt did he contract? He can answer for himself! It is estimated that by the time he left, it was around $11 billion (again, I stand to be corrected).

Where are these economic managers at the moment? Serving in Mr Hichilema’s government.

So the bad you blame PF is part of your core team.

In a nutshell, stop the blame game and fix the problems. You are now heading to 3 years in government, so stop the blame game. If you have failed, just admit, we will forgive you. You are not God, so every human being is fallible.

Just admit your failures and seek help.

Fadzayi Mahere Resigns from Opposition Party and Parliament in Zimbabwe

Fadzayi Mahere Resigns from Opposition Party and Parliament in Zimbabwe

Fadzayi Mahere, member of the Citizens Coalition For Change (CCC) and lawmaker in Zimbabwe’s parliament, has announced her resignation from both the opposition party and her parliamentary position. This decision comes in the wake of Nelson Chamisa’s departure from the CCC, where he claimed that the party had been taken over by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and his party, Zanu PF. Mahere is the first CCC lawmaker to publicly announce her resignation in solidarity with Chamisa.

In a letter addressed to her constituents in Mt Pleasant, Mahere expressed her gratitude for their support and emphasized her commitment to honesty, transparency, and accountability in her decision-making. She explained that when the CCC was launched in January 2022, it was meant to prioritize the welfare and aspirations of the citizens. The goal was to build a new Zimbabwe that offered dignity, prosperity, and opportunities for all.

Dear Mt Pleasant Constituents,

RESIGNATION FROM PARLIAMENT

Above all, I want to thank you. I do not take your confidence in me for granted. In fact, it has been the honour of my life to represent you. This is not the end for us but the beginning of a different journey.

One of my first promises to you was to always be honest, transparent and accountable in my decisions. It is in this spirit that I wish to lay out my reasons for leaving the Citizen’s Coalition for Change and resigning from Parliament with immediate effect.

When the CCC was launched in January of 2022, it was with the shared understanding that this new movement would be underpinned by the core value of being citizen-centred. It would put the welfare and aspirations of constituents like you at the heart of all decision-making. Our goal was to build a new Zimbabwe that offered dignity, prosperity and opportunity for everyone.

We agreed to run under the leadership of President Nelson Chamisa as we sought to introduce a new way of doing politics. Central to this objective was a belief that we would put the people first.

In the wake of the jarring electoral fraud we witnessed in August 2023, we made the tough decision to represent those hard-won constituencies in an effort to push the democratic process from multiple fronts.

Despite numerous odds, we fought hard to push back against unjust, anti-people pronouncements like the 2024 Budget, the fees crisis in higher education, the power crisis, the broken economy and the imposition of candidates following a series of fraudulent recalls.

Despite our focus on a battle of ideas and policy, the regime chose the low road of an unconstitutional onslaught on the will of the people. They used surrogates and dark actors such as a Mr Tshabangu, whom I do not know and have not met. Their goal is to force the two-thirds majority they failed to garner in August 2023 despite unprecedented electoral malpractices that left the region, and indeed the globe, in shock.

We have seen the widespread abuse of state institutions which have effectively handed over all levers of control of the CCC to this imposter.

The assault on the will of the people, the tainted state of Parliament, coupled with sundry breaches of Parliamentary privilege, illegal suspensions and the decision by President Nelson Chamisa to dissociate himself from the captured CCC have made it untenable for me to continue in my role as a member of parliament for Mt Pleasant Constituency under the CCC banner.

You chose me to represent you on a platform of values which are no longer at the heart of the CCC. I cannot remain a representative of a party whose leadership is unknown to me and whose motives and values remain opaque. I would be failing you if I held onto a position that will no longer serve the best interests of our community.

The CCC that I joined is not the CCC that we have left today. I cannot in good conscience be aligned to individuals who have caused unimaginable harm to the people by aligning themselves with a corrupt dictatorship.

I also cannot partner with persons who are willing to undo the will of the people and hand over seats that citizens stood in line for hours to vote for just to score cheap political points. This is not who I am or who I aspire to be.

The struggle for a democratic society should never be sacrificed at the altar of expediency. I remain committed to the cause of a better Zimbabwe. This is not an end but merely a line in the sand.

As always, I will remain a champion of the numerous causes important to our diverse community. I remain at your disposal, as we collectively navigate this uncertain phase ahead of us. Together, we will win Zimbabwe for change.

To give legal effect to this decision, I will tender my formal resignation notice to the Speaker of Parliament in line with section 129(1)(b) of the Constitution early next week when Parliament re-opens.

Forever in hope,
Fadzayi Mahere

KAZUNGULA BRIDGE AUTHORITY TO DEEPEN REGIONAL INTERGRATION

By Falcon Reporter

The creation of the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA) by Presidents of Botswana and Zambia to enhance both countries’ competitiveness in global trade and investment Southern African Development Community justifies the then regional leaders’ unwavering desire to create and modernise infrastructure as a prerequisite to deepening regional integration.

The 32nd SADC Heads of States Summit and Government summit which had in Maputo Mozambique on 12 August 2012 ratified a SADC Revised Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2015-2020-revised until 2027-was arguably to foster bilateral and regional trade.

The Short Term Action Plan (STAP) 2012 –2017; the Medium Term Action Plan running up to 2022; and the Long Term Action Plan and expected to conclude by 2027, has now come to actualisation with the formulation of a Kazungula bridge Authority by President Hakainde Hichilema and Botswana’s Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi.

The summit hosted by then Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, unanimously set the tone for the region to pull resources together to create modern and reliable infrastructure across the region to provide the appropriate foundation for economic development as countries transcend into a regionally integrated market to serve the more than 270 million population.

Key objectives were to improve the standard and quality of life of the regional inhabitants while supporting socially disadvantaged regions with the integration of more than 14 countries. Deepen integration and increase the market size, trade opportunities and improve resource allocation across member countries.

It was envisioned that the integration would facilitate free circulation of goods and services, mobility of workers and interconnected infrastructure. Under the SADC masterplan, the ambitious infrastructure development plan is planned to be implemented in three phases until 2027.

The US$259 million-ultra-modern-Kazungula bridge on the Zambezi River joining Zambia and Botswana, and officially began on 12 October 2014, reaffirms SADC’s quest to deepen integration through RISDP.

Developers of the project seek to improve the efficiency of transit traffic through the Kazungula border, once served by a ‘rickety’ ferry and facilitate and increase intra trade activities and foster global competitiveness of Zambia and Botswana.

Improved regional connectivity of the North South Corridor; contribute to economic regional integration within the SADC region. Other outcomes include: (i) reduced border transit time; (ii) improved procedures on trade facilitation; (iii) improved border management operations, and consequently (iv) increased traffic throughput and (v) reduced time-based transport and trade cost.

January, 2024 saw two SADC leaders-Hichilema and Masisi met in Kasane, Botswana and agreed to collaborate, mutually fostering an agreement on multiple fronts of economic cooperation including the establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA).

The Authority would regulate and facilitate an efficient and responsible management of the vital infrastructure which will enhance uninterrupted traffic of citizens and goods between the two neighboring nations.

The co-existence will be done through a shared commitment to strengthening economic ties across various sectors. Sectors to benefit include agriculture, livestock, health, mines, defense and security, tourism, and value chains within these sectors as focal points for deepening collaboration.

Under the new arrangement, the Border Authority will be hosted by Botswana while the Chief Executive Officer will be a Zambian national. According to President Masisi, the authority is expected to discuss ways of expanding access roads, install enhanced ICT technology to facilitate service delivery.
Ministers in respective sectors have been assigned to complete all outstanding issues to operationalise all formalities needed to legalise the entity. President Hichilema envisions that the regional asset, which should be valued, will facilitate speedy and effective movement of goods to allow the two nationals expand their economies.

The two leaders envision that the formulation of the Kazungula Bridge Treaty will accelerate bilateral and intra-regional trade among SADC member states without delay. The two leaders hope the ministers and technocrats from both countries will develop specific deliverables within the next two months.

President Hichilema and his counterpart, Masisi tasked the Kazungula Bridge Authority to ensure the facility met all the requirements to accelerate speedy movement of goods and services as well as people across the Zambezi River.

The facility is expected to undertake road expansions, install enhanced ICT technology to facilitate service delivery, according to President Masisi who directed for the speedy operationalization of all formalities needed to legalise the entity.

“The Authority will be tasked to make the border compete globally by making it a facility of choice for everyone, adding that the bridge’s name will not be changed but will remain as Kazungula, President Masisi said.

President Hichilema foresees an accelerated bilateral trade relationships between the two countries and extends to other regional neighbours who are expected to make use of the Bridge in the short, medium and long term.

““We are delaying traffic at the border especially at the Zambian side, we want this to stop and hence the reason for our meeting is to set clear guidelines that will improve services at the border,”

He regretted various shortcomings that hampered trade and affected human life. “Before this bridge was constructed, lives were being lost as people tried to cross over and hence we must value this bridge as a regional asset,”

Benefits:

The more than US$258 million-worth-bridge opened in 2014 will form a lifeblood for Africa’s trade and integration with the inception of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

It is envisioned to facilitate the efficient and seamless movement of goods and persons resulting in the promotion of industrialisation and the growth of regional value chains while promoting tourism.

Traders and transporters along Southern Africa’s North-South Corridor will now find an easy route for their products and services after years of decrepit infrastructure, border delays and traffic jams, heightening both the cost and time of trade.

The Kazungula Bridge linking Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi River offers renewed hope to those travelling north from Beitbridge on the South Africa-Zimbabwe border. It will contribute to intra-African trade in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The two one-stop border post facilities, one on each side of the Zambia-Botswana borders, the 923-metre bridge will handle over 270 trucks per day, a huge improvement on the previous pontoon boat service that could carry only two trucks at a time.

Under the one-stop border post concept, commuters stop at the facility of the exit country in a move that significantly cuts the transit time spent by traders and freighters.

Botswana and Zambia collectively own the bridge, funded by toll fees and administered by the Kazungula Bridge Authority, which was created to operate and maintain the infrastructure on behalf of the two nations.

The project cost $259m, with finance provided by the two governments, the African Development Bank, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and the European Union-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund gives full ownership by various players that will need to see profitability.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader seeks ‘fresh start’ with new party

Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa told AFP on Friday he will stay in politics and look to form a new political group, a day after he quit his own party denouncing government infiltration.

Chamisa, who in August lost an election he described as fraudulent to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, said he was ready for “a new thrust” after leaving the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) on Thursday.

“I am definitely not quitting, because winners don’t quit. And quitters never win,” he told AFP in an interview in the garden of an office in Harare.

He decided to exit the coalition party he formed only two years ago to “draw a line in the sand” after it was hijacked by the ruling ZANU-PF party.

“A break with the past is also a signal to the commencement of the future. We are saying enough is enough,” he said.

“What we are is a new approach, a new way, a fresh start,” he said without revealing a new party name.

“We are building a big church.”

Mnangagwa, 81, won a second term in office, beating Chamisa, 45, in an election for which international observers said the vote fell short of democratic standards and political tensions.

The vote also gave ZANU-PF a majority in parliament but the ruling party in power since independence in 1980 fell a few seats short of the two-thirds majority required to change the constitution.

Political tensions have since run high.

Dozens of opposition lawmakers have lost their seats under what analysts said appears to be an artificial political crisis.

This was triggered by an obscure political figure who declared himself the CCC’s “interim secretary general” and recalled the lawmakers sparking a series of by-elections that have so far favoured ZANU-PF.

Chamisa has been here before.

He first lost a disputed election to Mnangagwa in 2018 at the helm of the long-standing opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

In 2022, after factional squabbles and legal disputes he attributed to ZANU-PF, Chamisa broke away from the MDC and set up the CCC.

In a bid to avoid external meddling, he kept party structures secret — something that critics say allowed for the current crisis.

A former pastor and a lawyer, he said he has now learnt his lesson.

“We’ve learned our ways. We’ve seen that we’re dealing with a toxic and dangerous ruling party,” he said.

“So we will not repeat that same mistake. We’ll do our politics in a different way.”

‘Don’t be comfortable; I’ll conduct largest deportation in history if re-elected’ — Trump to illegal migrants

0

Former United States President Donald Trump has renewed his strong opposition to immigration in light of the ongoing crisis at the southern border, warning migrants not to “get comfortable” since he could win another term in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, January 25, Trump slammed the Biden administration for “surrendering” the border and “aiding and abetting a massive invasion” through lax enforcement policies.

He pledged to work with Republican governors like Greg Abbott of Texas to “stop the invasion, seal the border, and rapidly begin the largest domestic deportation operation in history.”

“When I am president, on day one, instead of fighting Texas, I will work hand in hand with Governor Abbott and other border states,” Trump wrote.

The one-time president added, “Those Biden has let in should not get comfortable because they will be going home.”

Trump has accused President Biden of precipitating a “national security, public safety, and public health catastrophe” through supposedly open-border policies.

He urged other states to send National Guard troops to the southern border to help Texas prevent new undocumented crossings and remove migrants who have already entered.

Read his full post below:
When I was President, we had the most secure Border in History. Joe Biden has surrendered our Border, and is aiding and abetting a massive Invasion of millions of Illegal Migrants into the United States. Instead of fighting to protect our Country from this onslaught, Biden is, unbelievably, fighting to tie the hands of Governor Abbott and the State of Texas, so that the Invasion continues unchecked. In the face of this National Security, Public Safety, and Public Health Catastrophe, Texas has rightly invoked the Invasion Clause of the Constitution, and must be given full support to repel the Invasion.

We encourage all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas to prevent the entry of Illegals, and to remove them back across the Border. All Americans should support the commonsense measures by Texas authorities to protect the Safety, Security, and Sovereignty of Texas, and of the American people. When I am President, on Day One, instead of fighting Texas, I will work hand in hand with Governor Abbott and other Border States to Stop the Invasion, Seal the Border, and Rapidly Begin the Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History. Those Biden has let in should not get comfortable because they will be going home.

ZAMBIANS ARE RESOLVED TO VOTE OUT HH IN 2026 – CHUNGU

….says Zambians will vote out the UPND administration because it has failed to Govern

Luanshya, January, Saturday 27, 2024

Former Government Chief Whip in the Patriotic Front (PF) regime Stephen Chungu says the people of Zambia have resolved to vote out President Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND Government in the 2026 General Elections.

Mr. Chungu, the former Luanshya Member of Parliament, said Zambians will vote out the UPND administration because it has failed to govern the nation accordingly.

He cited the high cost of living, unemployment, high fuel prices, mealie meal crisis and declining democratic space as failures of the UPND regime.

Mr. Chungu said all the UPND strategies that include the ten-point plan, the calculator, the graphs and ‘increasing in order to reduce’ plan have failed.

“Assessing the UPND Government, I would quickly say it has failed in many areas because nothing has come to fruition from the many promises they had made. There was a time the UPND told Zambians that they would be buying a mealie meal at K50 and that we were going to buy fuel at K12 per litre and that the dollar was going to sell at a single rate. That promise of the Kwacha gaining from 10:00 hours to 14:00 hours I don’t know when it will come to fruition. Maybe the clocks on the walls have all gone off. They said they were not going to be travelling when there is a crisis but we have seen the President traveling all over even when there is a crisis like we have cholera at the moment,” Mr. Chungu said from Luanshya.

He has since advised opposition political parties to unite and field one presidential candidate in 2026 to dislodge the New Dawn Government, a regime he branded as a common enemy for all Zambians.

“Zambia is never short of leaders, even now we have leaders that are vying for these positions but they are being squeezed by the current Government. If the Zambian people have to decide I know for sure that they will make a decision and they have already made a decision, which I can tell you. The decision that they have made is to remove the UPND, though they have not placed their vote on any other party as at now, their vote is hanging, the sympathetic vote that made UNPD go into Government is still hanging.”

“The UPND must be aware now and I am telling them that the decision has already been made by the Zambian people who are just waiting for the time of voting to come. Zambians are very peaceful people. They are waiting for 12th August 2026 to go and vote against the UPND, that decision has already been arrived at whether the UPND like it or not UPND is on its way out. It is a fact because the Zambian people have already decided,” Mr. Chungu said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chungu has declared that he is ready to serve the people of Luanshya Constituency again.

Miles Sampa has just been taken advantage of to cause confusion in PF because of his mental condition-Nakacinda

0

WE do not consider Matero Constituency Member of Parliament Miles Sampa as our enemy because we understand that he is just being used by an invisible hand to cause confusion in the party due to his mental condition, opposition Patriotic front (PF) Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda has said.

And Mr. Nakacinda has claimed that the former ruling party (PF) would bounce back in power in 2026 because the Zambian people were missing it.

Mr. Nakachinda told The Scoop that as the party, they did not have a grudge against Mr. Sampa for allegedly being sponsored to cause confusion in the former ruling party.

“We do not consider Sampa as an enemy because of the funded confusion that the party is experiencing.

He (Sampa) is just someone who has been taken advantage of because he is not well mentally. He has been taken advantage of because of his condition,” Mr Nakachinda said.

Mr. Nakacinda further claimed that the agenda of PF to come back to power was the aspiration of the Zambian people.

“Coming back to power is an agenda that will be actualised in 2026.And some sections of society have personalised the coming back to power of the PF to Edgar Lungu. It is not former president Edgar Lungu to come back to power but the PF,” he said.

He further stated that the funded confusion would not sway the PF from rebranding and doing what was best for Zambians.

But when contacted for a comment, Mr. Sampa said he could not make a statement as he was busy.

“I am busy at the moment. I will make a statement to react to Nakacinda’s remarks later because right now, I am with the people,” Mr Sampa said before cutting his line.

Meanwhile, Chief Chipepo of the Tonga people has advised former republican president Edgar Lungu to completely retire from active politics and reclaim statesmanship.

Chief Chipepo said Mr. Lungu was better off enjoying the statesmanship status than being regarded as opposition political party leader.

The traditional leader stated that it was going to earn the former head of state so much peace being in the background rather than in active politics.- The Scoop Newspaper

Earlier Debt Restructuring success was Sabotaged by President Hichilema and his officials

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Many Zambians are puzzled by the call by President Hakainde Hichilema to cooperating partners and donor countries that they should help with the delays in Zambia’s debt restructuring and reschedule program.

Zambians must be expressing surprise and puzzlement that a program that was heralded as a historical success and celebrations were held on the streets from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to Community House, now required urgent diplomatic help.

$3 BILLION BONDHOLDER RESCHEDULE SPOILS EVERYTHING

I alerted the country that the failure of the $3billion debt reschedule was being reported as a very big scandal in major western capitals and the development had jeopardized the earlier initial success reported in the $6.3billion debt reschedule.

We were ridiculed, rebuffed and told to shut up. ” Those that caused the mountain of debt must keep quiet!”, we were reminded.

But the scandal did not go away!

Here is a brief background and some aspects of the scandal;

1. On 26th October 2023, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane announced that Zambia had reached a historical milestone and agreed with External Bondholder Steering Committee to reschedule the $3billion Eurobond.

Zambia’s three international bonds rose sharply after the announcement, adding as much as 3.9 cents on the dollar.

There was hope that this development would restore full international capital markets access to Zambia and encourage long-term investment in the country.

ZAMBIA BREACHES G20 FRAMEWORK ON COMPARABILITY OF TREATMENT

2. However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was the first to raise immediate alarm when the details of the Agreement-in-Principle (AIP) between Zambia and the External Bondholder Steering Committee, were known.

3. The Agreement raised the coupon value from $3billion to $3.135billion.

Who raises the face value of their debt in debt negotiations?

4. Zambia was to pay $2.5billion in cash-flow to the bondholders during the period of the $1.3billion IMF bail-out ( 2024-2025).

Where was Zambia going to obtain $2.5 billion to give bondholders in one fiscal year when the very reason of its program with the IMF was to seek a $1.3billion bail-out?

This would immediately send Zambia to debt distress status, the very crisis the debt reschedule program was trying to fix!

5. Despite the G20 framework provision on debt suspension, Zambia pledged to pay the Past Due Interest (PDI) accumulated to $821million. The G20 Framework provides that the Past Due Interest must be written-off, but Zambia pledged to pay and clear the outstanding.

Whose interest or who was going to be the beneficiary for Zambia to pay the $821million which the G20 Framework encourages that it must be written-off?

6. While China and other multilateral institutions agreed to a haircut or to a discount of 40% on Zambia’s debt, Zambia accepted a discount of 18% from the bondholders.

Again Zambia was agreeing to pay more instead of demanding a bigger hair cut beyond 40%!

ZAMBIA VIOLATES G20 FRAMEWORK

These terms were a clear violation of the G20 principles on equal treatment of debt and creditors.

The Common Framework was designed to coordinate debt relief offered by public and private lenders and set debt treatment standards across both traditional Western lenders and major new creditors like China, India and Saudi Arabia.

The Common Framework requires that a debtor country that signs a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with participating creditor countries to seek debt treatment from its other creditors that is at least as favourable as that of the MOU.

ZAMBIA RISKS ALL

The Official Creditors Committee immediately rejected the Agreement between Zambia and the bondholders.

China, France and the Paris Club threatened to cancel or renege on the $6.3billion debt reschedule earlier agreed in June 2023.

Newspapers in Paris, London, New York reported the development as a scandal.
Musokotwane was ordered to cancel the deal.

On 20th November,2023 Musokotwane announced that the Agreement-in-Principle would not be implemented due to objection from the Official Creditors Committee. He stated that the agreement had failed to meet the G20 Framework on Comparability of Treatment.

The announcement sparked a sharp rally in Zambia’s three outstanding bonds, which has been partially reversed since Zambia said on November 10 that official creditors and the IMF had “expressed reservations” about the deal, sparking fears that the country’s drawn-out default could be extended still further.

This was a setback and Zambia was back to the old scenario before the debt reschedule.

Meanwhile the G20 Framework on Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) has expired and Zambia is expected to start paying its debt!
Under this arrangement, Zambia has not been meeting its debt service obligation since December 20, 2020.

And as usual, President Hakainde Hichilema is looking for people to blame including the Patriotic Front or China!

DIVORCE RATE IN ZAMBIA IS ALARMING

0

DIVORCE RATE IN ZAMBIA IS ALARMING!

PRESS STATEMENT.

Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles is irked and worried by the recent revelations indicating a sharp increase in the number of divorce rate in Zambia!

Within the period of five (5) years divorce rate has almost doubled and in the next few coming years, chances are high that the number of marriages ending in a divorce might increase. In 2020, the Minister of Justice by then Hon Given Lubinda announced that about 20,000 marriages ended up in a divorce of which about 90% were Customary or Traditional marriages and about 10% were Statutory or Civil marriages.

A fortnight ago, the Zambia Daily mail Newspaper revealed that in 2022 about 31,000 plus marriages ended up in a divorce and yet in 2023, an increase of more than 5,000 was recorded.

WHY THE INCREASE IN DIVORCE.

It is not surprising that many marriages are ending up in divorce because the holy bible prophesied that during the last days (End of time), the love for many will cool off. (Mathew 24:12). Enemities within families is on the increase. (Mathew 10:36 and 37). Many people today are no longer loyal to agreements and others become betrayers of their own spouses. (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Below are some of the known factors that have led to increase in divorce cases;

  • LACK OF MATURITY BY PROSPECTIVE MATES.

The maturity referred to in this case has nothing to do with the age of someone. While we acknowledge the age limit for anyone to enter a matrimonial home, many couples enter marriage alliances unprepared psychologically. Many lack needed qualities and attributes that can be used in rectifying problems that arise in marriage.

  • NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF OTHERS.

A recent survey conducted shows that often time problems faced by many couples is as a result of some negative influence from others especially the involved families. It is rare that spouses are the one’s responsible of the differences that ensure in marriage.

Many times relatives are so inquisitive in getting to know what is happening in the marriages of their children. Others are swayed by wrong advise coming from their colleagues be it workmates, neighbours or others they socialize with.

  • ILL MOTIVES.

Many couples enter into marriage with ill motives. Some have prospects of getting rich and transforming their lives into tycoons. Some prospective mates get attracted to others not out of genuine love but because of some material benefits from someone.

It should be noted that wealth and material possessions does not last. Circumstances in life changes and one’s material well being can change any time. Circumstances in life can change any time depending on the economic factors. Unforseen incidences might also overtake us and can suddenly change the status quo of anyone at any time.

  • UNFORSEEN INCIDENCES.

There is no guarantee that prospectives mates would remain in good health. Couples must be liberal enough to understand that we may fall sick any time. An accident can happen at any time. Couples must be prepared for unexpected eventualities.

Very few people nowadays are ready to remain loyal to their mates during unfavorable times and when circumstances suddenly change. (Ecclesiastes 9:11).

  • INFIDELITY.

Infidelity or lack of trustworthiness is one of the main reasons why many marriages are ending up in divorce! There are very few couples that remain loyal and faithful to their mates in marriage.

God our Creator the initiator of marriage only intended marriage to be made up of a man and a woman. Extramarital affairs was not part of God’s arrangement. The matrimonial and romantic love between a couple is not meant to be shared outside marriage and immediately one begin being unfaithful, a rift is created!

Infidelity has led to homicides (Killings among spouses). There are very few couples living together who are bound mentally, emotionally, spiritually and psychologically. Many couples only live together physically but they divorced long time ago! Hebrews 13:4, Mathew 19:3-6.

In the book of Malachi 2:16, the holy bible outrightly puts it clear that ‘God hates divorce’ and the scriptures condemns adultery as a vile practice. All those committing adultery will be destroyed by God and will not enter God’s Kingdom. 1 Corinthians 6:9.

  • LACK OF YIELDING.

It must be noted that a couple who make up into a marriage alliance come from different backgrounds with different personalities. People are brought up differently. Marriage is a combination of two people with different attitudes, perceptions, mannerisms, behaviours, likes, feelings, emotions, choices and views.

It is not true a belief that some couples that opt for divorce are not compatible but those who end up divorcing are not willing to adjust their personalities in order to fit into their mates. It is lack of humility, rigidity and unwillingness to make necessary adjustments that makes many couples to abandone marriage.

  • HARSH ECONOMY.

Admittedly we need to face the sad reality about the adverse and harsh economic hardships we are facing as a Country. It is becoming extremely difficult for men especially taking care of their families. Many family heads are failing to provide for their households not because they are lazy but due to the harsh economic situation.

It takes industriousness and having an enterprising person to survive in Zambia. It is not easy putting food on the table. Some end up resorting to abusing alcohol and smoking some drugs simply to find solace. Not everyone taking alcohol is happy. Some do it because of frustrations and failure to find sustainable activities.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles is an Organization founded to promote Morality in the Country. Morality has everything to do with the following;-

  • Good behavior of the people.
  • Mannerisms.
  • Conduct.
  • Attitude.
  • Perceptions.
  • Mental disposition or Mind set of the citizens.
  • Dress Code.
  • Language, Expressions and Utterances.

All the above faculties and attributes listed above can only be inculcated in our people from within their homes. They say ‘Charity begins at home’. A family is the most important unit that makes up a powerful nation. Admittedly there is very little being done by the Government in strengthening families in Zambia.

In just a few weeks from now, the Republican President will be going to Parliament in order to give an annual report on how the Government is actualizing National Values and Principles. Since 2016, it is a Constitutional recquirement for the President updating the Nation on how the Government is implementing National Values and Principles.

It is sad with such alarming figures of divorce rate how the President will be able to address the Nation. Nevertheless, not all the hope is lost. The following could be considered as options in strengthening family ties;

(1) RESTORING MARRIAGE INTERFERENCE ACT IN THE LAW.

The Government must immediately restore the marriage interference Act in the Law in order to promote sanity in marriage. All those found wanting in meddling in other people’s marriages must face the wrath of the Law.

(2) STIFFEN THE PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO DISRESPECT MARRIAGE.

In Zambia having an extramarital affair is deemed normal and acceptable. Statutory or Civil marriage criminalizes adultery for married couples. It is a crime called Bigamy having an affair with another person outside marriage. The same principle should be applied to Customary or Traditional marriages.

The stiff penalties put on anyone who becomes unfaithful should serve as a punitive measure to discourage couples engaging in extramarital affairs.

(3) DELIBERATE PROGRAMS MEANT FOR EDUCATING COUPLES AND PROSPECTIVE PARTNERS.

The Government through the Ministry of Justice, Community and other critical departments like National Guidance, Traditional Affairs and Gender must come up with deliberate Television and Radio programs for sensitizing and educating families on how to handle marital affairs.

Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information can also team up in ensuring that all media houses come up with programs aimed at educating the Nation on family values. We need more marriage counselors and mature, elderly and exemplary parents should be identified to be providing guidance in the Country.

(4) THE GOVERNMENT, CHURCH MOTHER BODIES, TRADITIONAL LEADERS AND CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS MUST WORK IN COLLABORATION.

This is the time when the Central Government, the Church Mother Bodies, the Traditional Leaders and some Civil Society Organizations need to come together in an effort to strengthen family ties. The increase in the number of divorce cases in Zambia is a clear sign that as a Country we are running out of strong moral values!

Concerted efforts are needed by all stakeholders in restoring morality and sanity in marriages. Divorce rate has a terrible impact on the health of our Nation. The number of street kids is likely to swell and chances are high that violence will go up as well. The foregoing situation if not curbed can result into having an ungovernable society and would result into political instability.

CONCLUSION.

While we appreciate the Government’s efforts by increasing CDF funds and empowering our Women and Youths through various embarkments, little is being done in instilling our National Values and Principles in our people.

Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles submitted a comprehensive report to the New Dawn Government on how we can cultivate an obedient Society of people anchored on strong values and principles. It is sad that our submission has gone unattended to.

Just as it would be futile and unrealistic for a bank giving loans to people without capacity of paying back, we need to prioritize values and principles in the Country. Sustainable Development can only be achieved once we have a generation of people who are morally upright!

COURT JAILS POLICE SPOKESPERSON RAE HAMOONGA COUNTERFEIT

THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has jailed fake police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga to two years for swindling two job seekers out of their K258 on pretence that he would help them get employed in the Zambia police service.

This is in a matter were Melos Moonga was charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretences and identity related crimes.

Particulars in the first and second counts are that Moonga between January 31 and February 28, 2023 with intent to defraud obtained K155 from Moses Simweene and a K103 from Naomi Himbole on the pretext that they would be employed in the Zambia police service.

In the third count Moonga on the same date impersonated the police spokesperson by using his pictures and the Zambia police emblem on his Facebook page to dupe people seeking employment in the police service during the police recruitment period.

In his mitigation before magistrate Fine Mayambu the 26 -year old imposter and businessman asked the Court to be lenient in meting out punishment on reasons that he is a family man and a student.

However in handing down his sentence magistrate Mayambu censured the convict for not having considered his family and school prior to engaging in fraudulent activities.

“I have also taken note that you committed serious offences. The first two counts can be a punishment not on exceeding three years and the last count not exceeding 10 years. You stole money and promised people jobs which you knew very well that they were false. You also used an image of an innocent person and got his picture, and Zambia Police logo and put it on a Facebook page,”magistrate Mayambu said.

“Your conduct did not only damage Mr Hamoonga’s image but the entire Zambia Police service. As the spokesperson of the whole police he carried the face of the institution.”

The convict was jailed nine months in count one and two and 24 months in the third count to run concurrently.

“I hope you desist from doing such things,” said magistrate Mayambu.

DONALD TRUMP MUST PAY $83.3M FOR DEFAMING E JEAN CARROLL

DONALD TRUMP MUST PAY $83.3M FOR DEFAMING E JEAN CARROLL

(BBC) A New York jury has decided Donald Trump should pay $83.3m (£65m) for defaming columnist E Jean Carroll in 2019 while he was US president.

The penalty in the civil trial is made up of $18.3m for compensatory damages and $65m in punitive damages.

Mr. Trump was found in a previous civil case to have defamed Ms. Carroll and sexually assaulted her in the 1990s.

He vowed to appeal the latest ruling, calling the case a witch hunt and the verdict “Absolutely ridiculous!”

The compensatory damages are meant to account for the harm that the jury found his comments had done to her reputation and emotional wellbeing.

The panel also had to come up with a punitive penalty intended to stop Mr. Trump from continuing to speak out against her.

It took the jury of seven men and two women less than three hours to reach a verdict on Friday afternoon.

“This is a great victory for every woman who stands up when she’s been knocked down, and a huge defeat for every bully who has tried to keep a woman down,” Ms. Carroll said in a statement.

Her attorney, Robbie Kaplan, said in a statement: “Today’s verdict proves that the law applies to everyone in our country, even the rich, even the famous, even former presidents.”

Earlier in the trial Judge Lewis Kaplan (no relation of the plaintiff’s lawyer) advised jurors not to use their real names with each other due to the sensitive nature of the case.

As it concluded, he advised them that they were free to discuss their experience. But he added that in his opinion they should not tell anyone they worked on this case.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, or even that he has ever met Ms. Carroll, including on Friday morning.

But following the verdict he refrained from attacking her directly when he slammed the outcome of the case in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“I fully disagree with both verdicts,” he wrote, “and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.

“Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”

A civil trial last year found he sexually assaulted Ms. Carroll, a magazine columnist, in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in the 1990s.

That jury also found him liable of defamation for calling her accusations a lie – and he was ordered to pay her about $5m in damages.

The case that ended on Friday focused on different defamatory comments by Mr. Trump in 2019.
Mr. Trump, who abruptly left court earlier in the day with his Secret Service security detail, was not present to hear the verdict.

His departure came moments after Judge Kaplan threatened to jail Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, for continuing to speak after he had told her to be quiet.

“You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup. Now sit down,” he told Ms. Habba.

The judge had threatened to eject Mr. Trump earlier after he muttered about the case being a “con job” and a “witch hunt” in court. Before the verdict was read, the judge warned: “We will have no outbursts.”

During closing arguments earlier on Friday, a lawyer for Ms. Carroll told the court her reputation had been severely harmed by the former president’s comments denying he sexually assaulted her.
“This case is also about punishing Donald Trump… This trial is about getting him to stop once and for all,” she said.

Ms. Carroll’s attorneys previously told the court that Mr. Trump’s statements unleashed a torrent of death threats, rape threats, and online vitriol towards her.

Mr. Trump’s lawyer had argued that he should pay no further damages to Ms. Carroll as her claims have “more holes than Swiss cheese”.

Ms. Habba said that her client was not to blame for the threats that Ms. Carroll received.

CALLING THEM OUT: THE FACTOR OF PERSONAL SECURITY/BENEFICIATION IN POLITICS OF REGIONAL IDENTITY

The past few weeks have provided us with spectacular theatrical performances in the politics of identity. This has notably been from two provinces of Zambia: Western and Eastern. Of interest is the fact that the leading proponents of special treatment or desire for shift in current disposition have players who when they served government never proposed what they are demanding currently.

But what is even more intriguing is the difference in the reaction of those that are currently enjoying job and economic opportunities in the Zambian government from both regions. While beneficiaries from the Eastern Province came out with guns blazing distancing themselves from the “Umodzi ku mawa” agenda, those from the western province serving in government have stayed mute and neither denying harbouring beliefs in the claims of cessation nor distancing themselves from the proponents of the Barotse agenda.

Should we then infer, that the “Umodzi ku mawa” proponents from the Eastern province are more protective of their personal subsisting personal beneficiation dispositions, than their western province counterparts in government who are ready to sacrifice their positions in furtherance of the Western province cessation by not stating their personal positions? Should we be reading something from western province leaders in government who have kept silent despite the president they serve coming under severe attack from the cessation proponents for his response on the matter?

Should we then say, proponents of both matters are driven by desire for personal inclusion and beneficiation and that the western province cessation agenda is actually deeper than meets the eye? In crafting permanent solutions to both issues we need to delve into personal interests, which are falsely made to represent a broader and profound regional or provincial agenda.

HH wakeup and smell the coffee, for the western bound train is slowly drifting away without you on the controls though the Nkoyas and Mbundas are providing a reliable cushion. But then, what about those from western province serving in your government, what is their position on the issue of cessation?

Now Zambians know HH talks mountains and paradise but delivers stones, nothing – Zimba

By Kholiwe Miti(The Mast)

IT is very difficult to predict where we are going, says former political adviser to Edgar Lungu, Chris Zumani Zimba.

He says now Zambians know that President Hakainde Hichilema talks mountains and paradise but delivers not only stones but at some point nothing.

In a conversation podcast last Thursday, Dr Zimba said it’s worrying that the current government still won’t listen to people even when they are told about corruption.

“To even have options of hope, because time is running and time is ticking. President HH was given a mandate for five years. This year, in the next few months he will be clocking three years. He would have crossed the middle line. Where we are it’s very difficult to predict where we are going in terms of hope, politically, economically, financially and socially as a country especially under a president who promised and has not delivered but he is still promising anyway,” he said. “For the first time this government and this President are still promising even when they are told that there is colossal embezzlement and corruption in your government. They are even told by foreigners like the Swedish Ambassador [Johan Hallenborg] who told them this (last) week [but] they go on the mountain to deny and denounce and demand for evidence. But you see these are diplomats, they are neutral. They have no interest in any politics. They are not partisan.”

He said President Hichilema while in opposition made a mountain of promises.

“He had made Zambia a paradise on paper and social media, so a lot of Zambians today are actively on social media. They followed a political icon. He promised the best in terms of fertiliser, fuel, electricity, mealie meal, maize – anything and everything in all sectors. President HH became a darling, he became a political messiah. And he found himself a Moses. He described whatever prevailed and existed into 2019 and before under the PF and under president Lungu as ugly, as evil, as negative. And he presented himself as a man that was the best skill to transform Zambia into a modern country and a modern economy. And his main campaign programme was ‘Bally Will Fix It’. And Bally had postured to fix everything in all sectors across Zambia. That was his campaign message. That is what made him popular and that is what made him win an election. Not that he was voted by UPND cadres because up to now UPND is not a national party,” Dr Zimba noted. “He was voted primarily by its citizenry that wanted change, whom he had given so much hope. Put it on record that not that PF had failed. Within a short period they governed Zambians they transformed this country. Zambia was a site of infrastructure development, everywhere in terms of roads, bridges, hospitals, clinics, schools name it. There is no district in Zambia where you will go to with no signature of the PF infrastructure.”

He said President Hichilema’s criticisms on his predecessor are “baseless and unfair”.

“The criticism that president Edgar Chagwa Lungu gets from President Hakainde Hichilema is baseless so to speak and it’s also very unfair but at some point it’s rhetoric and lies. I remember very well that president Lungu handed over power to President HH at Heroes Stadium, few weeks later the figures that HH gave in terms of what was the outstanding debt and later on his Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane… were two different figures. That was the beginning of trouble. That was the beginning of falsehoods and that was beginning of double standards,” he said. “And things have not changed to date. So that foundation is a rotten foundation in terms of governance and economic management of the state. Condemning the previous government of having over borrowed, in a space of two years this same President and this same government have borrowed more than $6 billion. You are talking about a government that governed Zambia for more than 10 years and left an external debt of less than $13 billion. And in the space of two years you borrow more than $6 billion. So you see political honesty is what is lacking in President HH. He doesn’t walk the talk. So the blame heaping on president Lungu who left US $13 billion debt cannot be justified by the mountain of debt he has given Zambia of more than US $6 billion debt in two years, meaning that in five years President HH is going to surpass the debt the PF left in 10 years.”

Dr Zimba said there is need to assess the President with his own yardstick.

“So the propensity at which he is borrowing is totally against what he promised and what he was condemning president ECL. So we need to assess President HH against his own yardsticks, against his own benchmarks. He lied and his still lying. You are talking about a president who is a chairperson of Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). The IDC is a baby, it’s an enterprise of the state that has got 34 parastatals in form of enterprises in 12 sectors. That is the path ECL wanted to take this country in terms of our economic troubles and challenges, in terms of addressing unemployment. In terms of upping industrialisation. President HH by virtue of position, any republican president, is a board chairman of the IDC. Where are they taking IDC and the 34 state enterprises? To the dogs. They are sinking the IDC as we speak. Under President HH as chairperson of the IDC, check the records, it’s going backwards. That is a vehicle we would have used to help us in mass job creation and industrialisation,” said Dr Zimba. “Let’s forget about the rhetoric of President HH and now Zambians know that he talks mountains and paradise but delivers not only stones but at some point nothing. So there is nothing much to compare ECL to President HH in terms of economic management. Unfortunately, empirically there is nothing. Under ECL, he is not an economist, what was the cost of fuel pump price? It was less than K17. This President is an economist, he promised he was going to reduce it further down, today where are we two years, three years later, it is double. Where is the price of mealie meal, our staple food? For God’s sake, mealie meal and maize is what every Zambian lives on. The PF and ECL mealie meal was left in 2021 at K120 to K90. Under the President who promised he was going to reduce the price of a 25kg bag to K50 mealie meal today is above K280 to K400 in some places.”

Munir, Fube benefit from Lungu’s kasaka ka ndalama

FORMER president Edgar Lungu yesterday extracted a meagre K100,000 from his famous ‘Kasaka ka ndalama’ to help lawmakers Munir Zulu and Mulenga Fube from get freed from detention.

The two volunteered themselves as sureties for trouble maker Kaizer Zulu who has since fled and is in hiding.

After a frullitless search for the violent vagabond who once served as Lungu’s top political advisor, the Lusaka Magistrates court ruled that his sureties pay K50,000 each, the money they had committed to pay should he jump bail.

In this case, it is alleged that Kaizer between November 19, 2019 and March 25, 2022 in Lusaka unlawfully and without claim of right, personalised a government vehicle registration number GRZ 759 after he ceased to be a government employee.

The benevolent intentions of Zulu and Fube to help their problematic friend by signing his police bond has come to no good as they have had a stressful time combing through the corners of the city and country in search for Kaizer.

The vagabond went into hiding on May 9, 2023 after he was found with a case to answer by principal resident magistrate Sylvia Munyinya for breaching immigration rules, leaving his sureties in a fix.

When the matter came up for return of bench warrant before magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, the two sureties indicated that the warrant was not effected as Kaizer is still on the run.

Zulu and Fube requested to have a private meeting with the magistrate in chambers as they could not disclose certain information in open Court.

Following the private meeting magistrate Mwenye proceeded to hear other matters to the shock of journalists who were expecting to get more information from the sureties about Kaizer’s whereabouts after the meeting.

The journalists put their investigative skills to use and established that the two members of parliament were put in custody by the Court on a condition that they donate a K100, 000 to the Judiciary which they committed to pay if they fail in their surety duties.

Luck seems to have been on Zulu and Fube’s side as former president Edgar Lungu who accompanied his wife Esther for her theft case came to their rescue and footed the bill.

Lungu directed his Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda and Mumbi Phiri to see to it that his favourite boy was released before close of business.

Nakacinda rushed to the Bank to make payments whilst Brian Mundubile and some PF cadres camped outside the holdings cells feeding on ice lollies as there chattering raised Zulu and Fube’s hope of going home.

The two slipped away from from spending their weekend behind bars as Nakacinda managed to secure their release immediately the prison truck known as Kasalanga was parked outside the holding cell by law enforcers in readiness to pick up inmates enroute to their correctional homes.

Upon emerging from the holding cells the two were clasped by Mundubile and PF cadres who had gone to offer them solidarity.

The elated Zulu waved the Kasalanga driver goodbye after surviving by the skin of his teeth and later proceeding to Lungu’s home with Fube and fell to their knees before their master and expressed gratitude.

Barotseland Independence Was Voted Against By Lozis Themselves In 1962/63 Referendum, During The Reign Of Litunga Sir Mwanawina Lewanika

0

BAROTSELAND INDEPENDENCE WAS VOTED AGAINST BY LOZIs THEMSELVES in 1962/63 REFERENDUM, during the reign of Litunga Sir MWANAWINA LEWANIKA.

There was a REFERENDUM on this matter, in 1963, in BAROTSELAND itself asking the people of BAROTSELAND:

Whether they wished to SECEDE, and LEAVE NORTHERN RHODESIA and be a SEPARATE COUNTRY.

It was NEVER the OTHER WAY ROUND.

The question, in that 1963 REFERENDUM was:

whether the BAROTSELAND NATION wanted to SEPARATE from NORTHERN RHODESIA, which was to soon become ZAMBIA, and NOT if they WANTED to JOIN NORTHERN RHODESIA, was soon to become ZAMBIA.

BAROTSELAND was ALREADY PART of NORTHERN RHODESIA.

The PLEBISCITE, or the result of the said 1963 BAROTSELAND REFERENDUM was:

an OVERWHELMING “NO”,

meaning that, the PEOPLE of BAROTSELAND DID NOT WANT to SEPARATE from NORTHERN RHODESIA, but wanted to PROCEED TOGETHER with the REST of NORTHERN RHODESIA, to INDEPENDENCE, as ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION, on 24th OCTOBER 1964.

For that PLEBISCITE or Results of the REFERENDUM, BAROTSELAND was organized into 65 VOTING DISTRICTS.

In the PLEBISCITE, 62 DISTRICTS voted
“No” to SEPARATION.

Only 3 DISTRICTS voted in FAVOUR of SEPARATION.

The “Yes” VOTE, in FAVOUR of SEPARATION, was led by the BAROTSELAND NATIONAL FRONT, led by Mr. MUFAYA MUMBUNA,

whilst the “NO” VOTE, AGAINST SEPARATION, was led by the Mulena Mukwae, Princess NAKATINDI NGANGA, the older sister to Litunga GODWIN MBIKUSITA LEWANIKA and mother of Princess NAKATINDI WINA.

At the time, in 1963, the Litunga was Sir MWANAWINA LEWANIKA.

The MATTER was PUT to REST by the POPULAR WILL of the PEOPLE of BAROTSELAND, THEMSELVES, who in 1963 VOTED AGAINST SEPARATION from NORTHERN RHODESIA and/or ZAMBIA.

This is an excerpt from a paper by UNZA researcher, NYAMBE G. SUMBWA showing:

(1) that UNIP had overwhelming support in BAROTSELAND during the struggle and
(2) that the issue in 1963 was about BAROTSELAND TRYING to BREAK AWAY from NORTHERN RHODESIA,
and NOT JOINING in order to form ZAMBIA.

(3) There are other PAPERS on this subject:

“The last of such attempts evolved around the BNP or ‘Sicaba Party’ as it was generally known in the province.

Formation of this party was conceived in the BAROTSE NATIONAL COUNCIL meeting of April 1962. Apart from re-affirming the policy of secession on the (false) grounds that UNIP intended to destroy the ‘Litungaship’, depose the indunas and integrate BAROTSELAND into ZAMBIA, the Council decided upon the formation of a Party whose main concern would be to ‘free Barotseland from UNIP rule and make it not a part of Northern Rhodesia’ (Caplan, 1970: 198). When the party was formed in June, this major aim was reflected in its objectives, which read:

… to protect, defend and preserve the protectorate status of Barotseland … the Barotseland Kingship and to fight for the separation of Barotseland from Northern Rhodesia (Northern News, 18th October, 1962).

The BNP SICHABA PARTY failed to defeat UNIP in two successive elections, however, (2) and thus failed to demonstrate mass support for the secession bid (as planned) to the colonizing power.

This must have been a big blow to the ‘Litunga’ and Council over their secessionist hopes.

And their hopes must have been completely shattered when its President, following BRITAIN’s CONTINUED REJECTION of the SELERATED BAROTSELAND idea, and when a planned alliance with ANC aborted, and dissolved the BNP.

They, therefore, must have seen the BAROTSELAND ‘AGREEMENT’ as the ONLY POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE to their problem.”

So, it should be clear that the BAROTSELAND AGREEMENT had NOTHING to do with BAROTSELAND joining NORTHERN RHODESIA to form ZAMBIA.

Conclusion:

BAROTSELAND is a PROVINCE of ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION, and can NEVER BREAK AWAY, or SECEDE, from ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION to form a SEPARATE COUNTRY called BAROTSELAND.

Serenje woman sinks sharp nails in boyfriend’s reproductive engine

HEALTH workers in Serenje District are working to attach reproductive tools that include a manhood and scrotum back to the groin area of a 34-year old man after his cheating girlfriend nearly ripped them off using her razor-sharp manicured nails.

Chibale Mulilo’s assets narrowly escaped complete removal from their allocated plot in a fight that ensued after he caught his girlfriend
Maggie Nyimba aged 27 with another man.

According to witnesss, Mulilo and Maggie had been watching the Zambia Vs Morrocco game in the neighborhood pub on Wednesday night.

But with Zambia’s exit from the tournament, Maggie sneaked out of the pub to seek some bedroom consolation using the tools of another man while her boyfriend chose to drown the pain of loss with several bottles of Black Lebel.

But after noticing that his lover was nowhere in sight, Mulilo went in search for Maggie and was eventually told she was in bed with another man.

This infuriated him, and he went marching to the venue, without considering the time.

While the sky was covered in darkness and the moon left as the only testament to light his path, Mulilo arrived and found a familiar face, Joseph Musonda, who was clearing cobwebs in his girlfriend’s tunnel of pleasure.

After coming eye-to-eye with his naked cheating girlfriend in the arms of another man who he knew very well, Mulilo loudly wondered how she could betray him in that fashion given the money he had spent on her.

The blood in Mulilo’s veins boiled, like water put under his surname, tempers flaired and a fight errupted.

However, it is not clear how Maggie got hold of the utensils below Mulilo’s belt, as she subjected him to a quick, sudden and painful surgery without anaesthesia.

Despite Maggie’s unfaithfulness with Musonda, the couple still took steps to guard themselves against the malaria-causing female anopheles mosquito as they sinned under the safety of a treated mosquito net.

This is a positive indicator that the Ministry of Health’s sensitization drive to educate people about malaria prevention in Zambia is bearing fruit.

Central province police commissioner Charity Munganga confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Maggie Nyimba aged 27 of Low density area.

Munganga said the incident happened around at 01:00 hours yesterday.

The suspect is currently in police custody awaiting court proceedings while Mulilo is nursing his wound at a health facility…

POLICE REPORT ON HOW THE COUNCILLOR DIVERTED 450 BAGS OF GOVERNMENT MAIZE

Chipata Central Police Station is currently investigating a case of theft involving the misappropriation of 450 bags of white maize, designated as relief food for vulnerable citizens under Sisinje Ward, Chipangali District.

The incident was reported by Moffat Mulile, a 46-year-old Disaster Management Officer residing in the Chipata Motel area.

According to the report, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit engaged the assistance of Councilors in Chipangali Constituency to facilitate the distribution of relief maize to vulnerable citizens.

On the January 25, 2024, 1100 hours, a Volvo truck, white in color, with registration number ARB 3632, was loaded with 450 bags of white maize from the Food Reserve Agency shed at Mgubudu.

The truck was driven by Mabvuto Mwale aged 37, of Mthilansembe Compound in Chipata District. Moffat Mulile escorted the truck up to Lundazi turn off, where he handed it over to Phillip Bobat Phiri, the Councilor for Sisinje Ward.

However, it was later discovered that instead of delivering the maize to his ward, Phillip Bobat Phiri diverted the truck to Chipwizi Farm off Mfuwe road in Chipata District with the intention of selling the relief maize.

Alert Police officers from Chipata Airport Police Station who were following up on another report in the area intercepted the theft in progress. Individuals were found offloading the maize from the truck at Chipwizi Farm.

Further investigation revealed that Phillip Bobat Phiri had approached James Sakala, a 38-year-old businessman from Nyakutwa area in Chipata, who purchases maize at Lundazi turn off, indicating that he had 450 bags of maize for sale.

James Sakala, in turn, hired individuals to offload the maize, which was packed in Food Reserve Agency branded bags.

All involved parties, including Phillip Bobat Phiri (the Councilor), James Sakala (the buyer), Mabvuto Mwale (the truck driver), and his co-driver Jones Mwale, have been apprehended and are currently in police custody.

The value of the stolen maize is yet to be ascertained. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

KEY POINTS FROM THE PRESS BRIEFING HELD BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA HON CORNELIUS MWEETWA

The Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa this afternoon held his weekly engagement with the media and discussed a number of issues of national importance.

Below are the highlights:

✅ The Chief Government Spokesperson acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the various forms of support the government is receiving from both domestic and foreign partners in the fight against cholera.

✅ Government commends the frontline workers who have given up their lives to confront the Cholera pandemic.

✅ The decline in the Cholera cases and the rising number of those who are being discharged is a sign that government is winning the fight against Cholera.

✅ The President has given a directive to Cabinet to come up with measures that will address the challenges of Cholera once and for all and to that effect, the committee of Ministers under the guidance and leadership of the Vice President Mutale W.K Nalumango met to consider short, medium and long-term solutions in the fight against Cholera in Zambia.

✅ The President of the Republic of Zambia, who is a champion against cholera, has stated that Zambia needs to set an example for others to follow and, as a result, there is need to develop long-term strategies to fight the disease.

✅ The committee of Ministers will advise the country on the next steps to take after the best and most appropriate suggestions have been made, so that the current cholera outbreak is the last of its kind.

✅ The Minister expressed gratitude and congratulations to the many people who supported the UPND Government by casting votes of confidence in the Mayembe and Kampamba ward elections in Shawang’andu and Mpika districts respectively.

✅ This is a sign the sign that voters are appreciating government’s programmes that include free education, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), payments to retirees, peace reigning in the country among others.

✅ Mr. Mweetwa also commended Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament Stephen Kampyongo for demonstrating great leadership in the by-elections associated with Shiwang’andu where he visited and joined the UPND campaign meeting.

✅ Government is delighted to have recruited more than 7000 teachers last year which is unprecedented.

✅ President Hakainde Hichilema is fixing it while the opposition watch in disbelief and denial.

✅ The Agro input distribution program was completed perfectly the previous year; all the districts received the correct amounts of fertiliser and seed. However, government is aware that there are issues with the way the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) was handled.

✅ Government has observed a rush for seed and fertilizer this year; data from seed distribution and sales companies indicate that seed companies have sold an unprecedented number of metric tonnes of seed, demonstrating that citizens and farmers have embraced the President’s encouragement for those who can, to pursue farming.

✅ Government would like to refute assertions by some sectors of society that it is importing and distributing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) maize through the Zambia National Service (ZNS).

✅ The claims are demonstrably untrue and unjustified. The Zambian government is putting out the challenge to anyone disseminating misleading information to show proof of any genetically modified maize or mealie meal on the Zambian market.

✅ Contrary to the assertions, the maize being imported from South Africa is not for Zambia but for onward transmission into the Democratic Republic of Zambia (DRC) market.

✅ Government has come up with this initiative to saturate mealie meal in the demand zone in order to reduce smuggling of the pure white grade 1 non-GMO mealie meal.

CCC implosion: Analyzing Chamisa’s resignation – Strategic or Capitulation?

Nelson Chamisa, the prominent opposition figure in Zimbabwe for the past five years, recently resigned from the Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC), a party he founded exactly two years ago.

The tumultuous events leading to his departure included political intrigues, a lack of conventional structures within the CCC, and a controversial internal candidate selection process for the August 2023 harmonised elections.

The CCC, born in January 2022, operated without established structures or founding documents, setting the stage for its eventual implosion post-general elections on August 23-24.

A faction led by Mr. Sengezo Tshabangu executed a series of recalls, backed by judiciary rulings that seemingly handed Tshabangu control of the party.

Chamisa’s subsequent 13-page resignation document, citing the CCC as ‘contaminated,’ left many wondering whether this move was a strategic maneuver or a surrender. In this article, I offer my opinion on part of the problem and what it means.

The Core Issue: Power and Control

The formation of the CCC can be traced back to the internal upheaval within the MDC Alliance, which was under the leadership of Nelson Chamisa from 2018-2020. The underlying issue that continues to plague Zimbabwean opposition politics is the persistent battle for power and control.

Contemporary mainstream opposition, rather than being anchored in robust institutions and defined rules, predominantly revolves around electoral success and the sway of public opinion, presenting a serious challenge.

Ahead of the 2023 general election the CCC, shaped around the charismatic appeal of Chamisa, lacked a cohesive strategy to address the potential ramifications of electoral setbacks. Absence of a shared roadmap in the face of adversity rendered the CCC susceptible to internal discord and fragmentation.

Without a solid framework to navigate the intricacies of power dynamics, the party found itself exposed to internal conflicts, emphasizing the pressing need for a more structured and resilient approach to opposition politics in Zimbabwe.

Distant or Indifferent Chamisa?

The conspicuous lack of involvement in the internal tribulations of the CCC by Nelson Chamisa was not merely a post-resignation revelation; it manifested well before the formal announcement of his departure.

Rather than immersing himself in the legal battles that besieged the party, Chamisa opted for a hands-off approach, delegating the responsibility to others. This deliberate choice to distance himself from the intricacies of internal strife served as an early indicator of a growing disconnection.

Beyond his disinterest in legal proceedings, Chamisa’s aloofness extended to a notable absence of coordination with the elected representatives within the party. The echoes of this disconnection reverberated through the ranks, leaving a palpable sense of discord.

The public revelation of his resignation, in essence, aligned seamlessly with his privately held disposition. It served as a confirmation of a protracted period during which Chamisa gradually withdrew his investments, both emotionally and strategically, from the internal disputes plaguing the party.

This unraveling of connection raises questions about the leadership dynamics within CCC and adds a layer of complexity to the broader narrative surrounding Chamisa’s role in Zimbabwean opposition politics.

Strategic or Capitulation?

In the complex realm of political strategy, where shades of gray often dominate, Nelson Chamisa’s recent move prompts a critical examination of its nuanced nature, oscillating between strategic maneuvering and potential capitulation.

The pivotal factor in assessing the impact lies in the forthcoming outcomes. Chamisa’s leadership, historically challenged in mobilizing the masses effectively, raises doubts about whether his resignation will usher in a transformative shift in this regard.

The broader context underscores the intricate web of Zimbabwe’s political challenges, suggesting that resolution may necessitate not only internal recalibration but also regional intervention.

Within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Chamisa’s standing appears to lack the requisite leverage for substantive influence.

As the need for external mediation looms large, questions arise regarding the extent of Chamisa’s ability to shape regional dynamics and garner support for change within the complex political landscape of Zimbabwe.

This raises a crucial debate on whether Chamisa’s recent actions are primarily a strategic recalibration for local headlines or a genuine attempt to navigate the broader, intricate web of regional and domestic politics.

Not All Is Lost

Despite grappling with formidable challenges, Nelson Chamisa remains a towering figure of significant popularity, a formidable asset in the volatile landscape of Zimbabwean politics.

His departure from the CCC not only liberates him from the intricate web of local authorities and parliamentary responsibilities but also serves as a crucial juncture for personal reflection and strategic recalibration.

This hiatus offers Chamisa an invaluable opportunity to delve into a period of introspection, allowing him to reevaluate his political trajectory and potentially realign his strategies without the encumbrances of party leadership.

In the aftermath of his resignation, Chamisa stands at the crossroads, facing the prospect of emerging from this period of reflection with renewed strength.

The absence of the burdensome responsibilities associated with leading a political party provides him with the flexibility to reassess his approach, refine his leadership style, and strategize for the dynamic political landscape ahead.

In summation, Chamisa’s departure from CCC not only marks a significant chapter in his political journey but also sparks crucial inquiries into the state of opposition politics within Zimbabwe.

It underscores the imperative need for robust structures and shared strategies to navigate the complex webs of the nation’s political panorama.

As the repercussions of Chamisa’s move unfold, the ultimate judgment of whether it signifies a strategic recalibration or a capitulation hinges on the evolving political dynamics in the post-resignation landscape.

The unfolding narrative will provide a clearer understanding of the implications of this pivotal development on both Chamisa’s political trajectory and the broader spectrum of opposition politics in Zimbabwe.

Chamisa to form new party, ‘not giving up!’

Nelson Chamisa’s resignation as leader of CCC has received worldwide coverage.

“Mr Chamisa, a 45-year-old Christian pastor and lawyer, is expected to set up a new party. He said that “giving up or giving in is not an option,” reported BBC.

“It is not clear how many of the CCC’s remaining MPs and councillors will follow him.”

Zanu PF has never honoured its promise to hold free, fair and credible elections from the word go. In the country’s first elections in 1980, the party made it clear “the bush war would continue if the party did not win the election. Of course, the people voted to end the bush war.

The 1985 election took place in the middle of the Gukurahundi massacre whose primary purpose was to force PF Zapu, Zanu PF’s main political opponent, to give up its identity. PF Zapu leaders finally relented and signed the 1987 Unity Accord opening the door for the imposition of the de facto one-party, Zanu PF, state.

The 1990 and 1995 elections were not free, fair and credible and Zanu PF’s excuse was that multi-party democracy threatened the peace, unity and development brought about by the 1987 Unity accord. It was just a feeble excuse for denying the people their fundamental right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country.

By the late 1990s the nation had come to the conclusion that Zanu PF would never honour the people’s right to a meaningful vote and so the people will have to risk the regime’s wrath by electing opposition members whose primary task was to implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. Alas! Zanu PF blatantly rigged the 2023 elections proof that the MDC/CCC opposition leaders have failed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. Why?

The historic facts of why MDC/CCC leaders have sold out by failing to implement even one token reform in 23 years including the 5 years in the GNU, are well documented. And how, since the GNU, they have participated in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and thus perpetuating the dictatorship out of greed.

“While he (Chamisa) does enjoy significant support, especially in urban areas, his critics say Mr Chamisa’s weak leadership led to deep rifts in the opposition, and that has only helped President Emmerson Mnangagwa cement his grip on power,” continued the BBC report.

Whilst many outsiders including SADC leaders have noted with dismay that it is MDC/CCC leaders greed and incompetence that have helped Zanu PF stay in power these last 23 years. The outsiders have also noted that the majority of Zimbabweans have failed to comprehend the opposition leaders’ blatant betrayal of common cause of implementing the reforms and hence the why CCC continue to enjoy significant public support.

Up to the 1995, elections could be viewed as a simple binary choice between Zanu PF, the bad guys, and opposition, the good guys. By 1999 a new level of complexity was added, the opposition primary task was to implement the democratic reforms to stop Zanu PF rigging elections.

After 23 years, including 5 in the GNU and not even one token reform in place; it is clear MDC/CCC leaders are corrupt and incompetent and not up to the set task of implementing the reforms. The reason why many Zimbabweans still continue to support MDC/CCC leaders is because these individuals are simple minded people whose view elections as a simple binary choice of Zanu PF vs opposition, the bad guys vs the good guys.

Accepting that the MDC/CCC opposition must be judged on their ability to implement the democratic reforms demands thinking outside the box of the binary choice – a quantum leap which, unfortunately, many have failed to make.

When Nelson Chamisa launched CCC in January 2022 he promised to cleanse the new party of all the “rotten apples” in MDC A. Today, two years latter he is having to abandon CCC has been “contaminated” and “hijacked” by Zanu PF. The truth is CCC has failed to deliver any meaningful changed just like MDC A and MDC itself before it because MDC leaders are corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent. They have proven this beyond all reasonable doubt during the GNU when they failed to implement even one token reform.

Chamisa’s new political party will not implement any democratic reforms just as CCC failed because the new party will be led by the same corrupt and incompetent leaders recycled from CCC. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sower’s ear.

“Giving up or giving in is not an option!” boasted Chamisa. After 23 years including 5 in the GNU and not even one token reform in place, an informed and diligent electorate should have elected some one else a long time ago!

14-year-old boy kills South Korean politician

0

A 14-year-old boy was responsible for hitting a South Korean lawmaker with a rock. He was sent to a mental health facility on Friday, as the police keep looking into the attack.

Last Thursday, a member of the ruling party, Bae Hyunjin, was attacked. This happened shortly after another man stabbed opposition leader Lee Jae-myung in the neck. This raises more worries about the harsh and divided political discussions in the country.

Police talked to the young suspect at the hospital while his parents were there. They will keep asking him questions to find out more. Cheon Young-gil, who works at the Gangnam district police station in Seoul, shared this information.

South Korea’s rules say that if doctors and police agree, a person who might be mentally ill can be sent to the hospital for up to three days to make sure they don’t hurt themselves or others.

Cheon did not want to talk about the suspect’s health after the attack on Thursday in southern Seoul. South Korean media said that people who know the boy but want to stay unnamed, said that he was getting help for feeling very sad.

Cheon said that the suspect was taken to the hospital quickly because of his age and health, but didn’t give any more details. He said if the boy’s parents agree, the police can ask the hospital to keep him there for more than three days.

The police spoke with Bae on Friday at the hospital where she was getting treatment. Bae’s office shared pictures of her coat and sweater with blood on them. People say these were given to the police as proof.

The reason for the attack was not immediately known.

Bae was chosen in 2020 and is considered a close friend of President Yoon Suk Yeol. President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office promised to do a deep investigation of the attack. Politicians from both Yoon’s party and the liberal opposition have criticized the attack as an attack on the country’s democracy. “Our politics are not on the right track anymore. ” We all agree that we should stop the hateful politics, but we still use harsh language towards our opponents. The old-fashioned style of politics that only appeals to the most extreme supporters is still going strong, according to Jung Kwang-jae, a spokesperson for the People Power Party.

In South Korea, politics is very divided. People have different opinions based on their age, beliefs, and where they live. The arguments between political parties are getting worse before the upcoming elections in April. The elections are seen as a way to see if Yoon is popular. He has low approval ratings and the opposition controls the National Assembly, so it’s hard for him to do what he wants.

The security camera video showed the person who attacked Bae. They wore a gray hat and a mask and talked to Bae before hitting her with a small rock. He kept hitting Bae with a sharp tool, even after she dropped to the ground. She fought off the attacker by herself, using her arms to push him away and grabbing his wrist. Then, someone else came out of a door and tried to help.

The leader of the other group, Lee, was in the hospital for eight days after he was attacked. He talked about the attack on Bae and said that his scar hurts again because of this terrible event. He also said that he hopes she gets better soon.

Lee almost won the 2022 election, but Yoon won. The person who attacked Lee said he did it because he didn’t want Lee to become president.

South Korea has experienced more attacks on politicians lately.

In 2022, Song Young-gil, who was the leader of Lee’s Democratic Party, was attacked by a man with a hammer during a rally to support Lee’s campaign for president. The song needed stitches but didn’t get seriously hurt.

In 2006, a man attacked Park Geun-hye, who was a conservative opposition leader, with a box cutter during an election event. Park, who later became president in 2012, had to get 60 stitches to close an 11-centimeter (4-inch) cut on her face.

Trump named as “presumptive 2024 nominee” by Republican National Committee

0

The Republican National Committee was considering making Donald Trump their nominee for the 2024 election, but they decided to wait until he has more support before making a decision.

Trump said on Truth Social that he liked the idea of running for president again, but he changed his mind to keep his party united. He won’t be running for president anymore. He said he will complete the process by voting.

The draft says that President Trump is expected to be the candidate for president in 2024. It also means that anyone who likes other candidates can join his team too.

The person who knew about the decision said that the withdrawal happened, but they can’t talk about it to everyone. They didn’t want people to know their name.

If the rule is approved, it would give Trump even more control over the party. This is happening while Nikki Haley is still trying to be chosen as the GOP nominee.

Ronna McDaniel, who is in charge of the Republican National Committee, had already expressed her support for the resolution. On Tuesday, McDaniel said that even though Haley did well in New Hampshire, she believes all Republicans should back Trump as their candidate.

The RNC was going to discuss a plan at their meeting in Las Vegas next week, even though only two states had voted and the former president didn’t have enough supporters to win the nomination.

Haley’s group said that the RNC can’t pick the GOP candidate.

“Nobody pays attention to what the RNC says. ” “We want the Republican voters to pick our party’s nominee, not the people in Washington,” said Olivia Perez-Cubas, who is representing the campaign.

The AP has a rule to not say someone is the “presumptive nominee” until they have enough delegates to win most votes at the party conventions. It could happen as early as March.

But the RNC was allowed to do this because there were no rules against it. If they had used it, it could have helped the Republican Party get ready for the next election against Joe Biden, who is getting ready to run for president again in 2020.

The group has done this before. They said a person will probably be chosen, even before they had enough votes. Reince Preibus, who used to be the RNC Chair, backed Trump in May 2016.

Haley believes that by staying in the race longer than the other candidates, even though she lost in Iowa and New Hampshire to Trump, it shows that she is a strong contender.

Trump has 32 people on his side, and Haley has 17. After the New Hampshire competition, there is still one delegate that has not been given to a candidate.

Haley talked at a big event in South Carolina and told everyone that her campaign received over $1 million in donations after getting second place in New Hampshire. Trump said something that seemed like he was trying to make his supporters afraid.

“Trump said that anyone who helps Birdbrain is not welcome in the MAGA camp anymore. ” “We don’t want them, and we won’t let them in because America is our top priority and always will be. ” Rewrite this text in simpler words.

Haley’s team said on Thursday that they received an extra $1. 2 million dollars were given as gifts after Trump said he would stop anyone from giving money to her campaign.

Trump’s idea didn’t work. A lot of people are donating money to help Haley’s campaign. This means they are fed up with all the problems and are backing Nikki’s plan for a powerful and proud America.

Trump didn’t pay attention to any money given to Haley, and it didn’t affect his decision. J used to work for the government and now he helps Haley as a lobbyist.

“That’s like something from a ‘Godfather’ movie. ” can be rewritten as “It’s similar to something from a ‘Godfather’ movie. ” “He said to never let down your family. ” “You need to stop playing now. ” Please rephrase this text using easier words.

Petrizzo thinks that some Republicans want to talk about Trump and Biden competing against each other, but he wants to remind everyone that the final election is still a long way off.

“I have heard lots of Republican Party leaders, including the RNC chair, say we should help a candidate. ” They want to choose this person to be our representative. Petrizzo said we should help Trump because Iowa and New Hampshire voted for him. There are still 285 days until the election. There is plenty of time remaining.
The Republican National Committee won’t discuss making Donald Trump the party’s 2024 nominee until he has enough people supporting him.

The news was released after Trump said on his social media that he didn’t want to go through with the idea because he wants his party to stay united. He wants to keep using the old way to get people to vote for him in the elections.

The draft predicts that President Trump will be the chosen candidate for the 2024 election and wants the supporters of all candidates to join his team.

Someone who knew about the decision said that the withdrawal had happened. They couldn’t talk about it in public and they wanted to keep their name a secret. This happened on Thursday night. It took place on Thursday evening.

If the rule had been approved, it would have made Trump even more powerful in the party at a time when Nikki Haley is competing against him for the GOP nomination.

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel had said she supported the resolution before. On Tuesday, McDaniel said that Haley did really well in the campaign, but Republicans need to help Trump, who will be our chosen candidate.

The plan was supposed to be discussed at the RNC’s meeting in Las Vegas next week, even though only two states have voted and the former president did not attend.

NATO leader optimistic Sweden could be prepared to join by March

0

NATO’s leader, Jens Stoltenberg, said he is hopeful that Sweden might join their military group by March. Hungary and Turkiye both gave positive signs this week.

Sweden and Finland, who used to stay out of military conflicts, changed their minds when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. They asked to join NATO for protection. Finland joined, and now all 31 countries, including Finland, have to agree for Sweden to join.

“Sweden joining NATO will make the whole group stronger,” Stoltenberg told reporters. He also talked about his discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and mentioned new developments in Turkey.

I got a message from Budapest that the parliament will meet again at the end of February. So, we have to wait until then. “But I believe in Hungary and I am sure of it,” Stoltenberg said.

At first, Hungary didn’t explain why they were delaying, and Orban said his government wouldn’t be the last to agree with Sweden. However, the European Commission refused to let Hungary have access to EU funds because they were not being democratic. This made the attitude towards Stockholm become more severe.

Budapest said that Swedish politicians are telling big lies about how Hungary’s government works.

Orban, who disagrees with NATO allies by supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said on Tuesday that he invited Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to Budapest to talk about working together on security and defense.

If there is no emergency meeting, the parliament will meet on Feb. for Sweden’s bid. “Please rewrite this text in simpler words. ”

To let Sweden join, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan set some rules. One of them is to take a stronger position against groups that Turkey sees as a danger, like Kurdish militants and people involved in a coup attempt in 2016.

On his own, Erdogan wanted to make a deal with the United States to buy fighter jets. This was also related to his approval of something else.

On Tuesday, Turkish leaders voted and approved Sweden’s request to join by 287 votes to 55. The Turkish government finished the process on Thursday by publishing the measure in an official newspaper.

Stoltenberg was glad that on Thursday night Erdogan signed the decision of the parliament, so now all decisions are in place in Turkey.

Sweden is going to join NATO as the 32nd member after Hungary finishes its processes and the U. Sgets approval from all the other countries. “State Department” can be simplified to “government office. “

‘Ultra-patriot’ Russian imprisoned for insulting Putin

0

I saw Igor Girkin five years ago in a stairwell at a news agency in Moscow.

“Can I interview you. ” I said “NO,” he said firmly and quickly ran off.

I saw him again today. I saw him once more today. No stairs This time, Girkin was in a locked area with police around him in the Moscow City Court.

We were permitted to film him along with other media for just one minute at the end of his trial.

A dog trained to help the police wouldn’t stop barking. Girkin thought it was funny. The verdict is not as much. A few minutes later, he was judged to be guilty of extreme behavior and was given a four-year prison sentence.

He had been convicted before.

In 2022 in The Hague, Girkin was found guilty of killing 298 people on Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, even though he wasn’t there in person.

Russian forces in Ukraine destroyed a Boeing plane in 2014.

Girkin was one of three men who were given a life sentence in prison. He didn’t listen to the judgement.

One year after we first met in the stairwell, I finally talked to Girkin on the phone and asked him about the Hague.

He said he doesn’t believe in the Dutch court’s power for this issue.

“I am a soldier and I don’t think it’s right for a court in another country to punish someone for fighting in a war that wasn’t their own, just because some of the local people were killed. ”

“Do you know who caused the plane to crash. ”

“The rebels didn’t bring down the Boeing plane. ” I have nothing left to say.

“I asked if the Russian soldiers were the ones responsible since it wasn’t the rebels. ”

“That’s all” “Goodbye,” he said and then ended the call.

Now he will be in jail. But not for killing a lot of people at once. Not forever

Who is Girkin, also known as Igor Strelkov, and why did a Moscow court put him in jail.

He used to work for the Russian security service called the FSB. In 2014, he was an important part of the fighting in Ukraine’s Donbas region. The conflict was planned and directed by Moscow.

He led groups of people who supported Russia in eastern Ukraine.

The court in the Netherlands decided that Russia was in charge of the groups fighting for independence in eastern Ukraine. Also, Girkin was involved in bringing the missile system that shot down flight MH17 into Ukraine.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, ultranationalist Girkin became a popular blogger who supported the war.

He started to be more and more critical of how the Russian government was fighting the war. He thought they were not putting in enough effort.

He started a group called The Club of Angry Patriots, which believed in strong nationalism.

He had problems when he started to show his anger towards President Vladimir Putin.

People said mean things about the Russian president in public. Last year, Girkin said Putin is “meaningless” and “a cowardly person who is not useful”.

A couple of days after that, he got taken by the police. Now he’s been found guilty in court.

Certainly, a four-year prison punishment is not as severe as other punishments given by Russian courts lately.

Last year, a pro-democracy activist named Vladimir Kara-Murza was given a 25-year prison sentence for being found guilty of treason. He and his supporters say that the case was motivated by politics.

How would the “Angry Patriots” respond to Girkin going to prison. Would they go out on the streets to show their anger.

No, not exactly. A small group of fans got together outside the Moscow City Court and shouted “Freedom to Strelkov. ” but they didn’t sound very hopeful.

“Denis says they are trying a Russian person who loves their country. ” I want our people to wake up and start fighting. I’m sorry, but we don’t see people disagreeing much. “Everyone is staying hidden. ”

Also in the crowd was a retired army colonel named Vladimir Kvachkov who is known for being very patriotic and vocal about his beliefs.

Mr Kvachkov told me that Russia will always be an enemy of the West and said that the United Kingdom will break up. He also said that Girkin is being punished for going against the system.

In the past few years, the government has focused on getting rid of Russian political figures who support democracy and the West.

Girkin’s prison sentence shows that Russia is now cracking down on critics who are extreme patriots.

The mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner mercenaries last year might be the cause.

The Putin government overcame the challenge. However, the Kremlin will now be aware of the potential risks from very motivated nationalistic and patriotic people in Russian society.

Brave Trump assumes legal risk by testifying in defamation trial in New York

0

Donald Trump made an appearance in court to address a legal dispute. The court time was short.

The civil trial is about mean things Mr. Trump said about Ms. Carroll in 2019 when he was in the White House.

He was caught for sexually attacking Ms. Carroll in the 1990s, but he still says he didn’t do it.

However, the court had to spend a lot of time discussing the extent of his testimony on Thursday for this reason.

Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is in charge of the case, said the former US president can only talk about certain things in court because he was found responsible for sexually assaulting Ms Carroll in a different trial.

This caused the judge and lawyers to argue for a long time about what Mr. Trump could talk about, which was much longer than his four minutes of testimony.

Judge Kaplan said the first trial proved what happened and now the only thing left to decide is how much money Mr Trump has to give Ms Carroll, if any.

He didn’t give the current top Republican candidate any chance to speak beyond what was agreed. This made it impossible for the candidate to talk a lot or promote their campaign while testifying.

Maybe this is something Mr. Trump has learned from his other legal fights. In a trial for fraud in New York, Mr. Trump was first told he could not give his final statement. The judge in that case wanted to know if Mr. Trump would be brief and only talk about the important parts of the case.

Mr Trump talked for six minutes and said that he feels unfairly treated by politics.

The old person didn’t have as much freedom during the defamation trial on Thursday.

When he was asked if he still agreed with what he said before, Mr. Trump said, “Yes, absolutely. ”

His lawyer, Alina Habba, then asked if he said he didn’t do what Ms Carroll said he did. “He said, ‘Yes, that’s correct, I did. ‘”

He said “She said something that I thought was a lie – completely untrue”.

However, Judge Kaplan quickly stopped Mr. Trump and told the jury to pay no attention to his last statement.

Finally, Ms Habba asked if her client told anyone to hurt Ms Carroll. Mr Trump said, “No, I just wanted to protect myself, my family and the presidency. ” The judge again removed the last part from the record.

And that’s the end of the testimony. A WCBS reporter heard Mr. Trump say, as he left the courtroom, that it’s not the America he knows. This is not the United States.

Earlier today, Judge Kaplan told him to not talk loudly and interrupt the proceedings. He was overheard quietly saying that he had never met Ms Carroll.

It feels like we’ve seen this before when watching one of Mr. Trump’s trials In court, he has often pushed the boundaries and taken big legal risks.

If Trump had given evidence that went beyond what the judge allowed on Thursday, he could have been fined a lot of money or even sent to jail for lying.

However, Trump’s followers are staying interested and paying attention to his legal issues because he is doing things his own way.

And most importantly, it’s getting a lot of attention from the media at a very important time for the politician. After winning in New Hampshire, the former real estate businessman from New York is likely to be the Republican candidate for president.

Ronnell Andersen Jones, who teaches law at the University of Utah, said to media that this case demonstrates the big difference between Mr Trump’s legal tactics and his actions during the election.

The ex-president and his lawyers are trying to tell the jury that his words in the White House were not bad enough to deserve punishment, but it’s hard to believe that considering what he did.

“Ms Jones said it will be difficult because the jury keeps hearing new evidence that the defendant is still spreading lies outside the courtroom. ”

The trial for slander will start again on Friday at 09:30 ET (14:30 GMT) with final statements from both sides. We don’t know yet if Mr. Trump will go.
