I remain a record holder in spirit and history” Hilda Baci speaks out on updating her bio after losing her Guinness World Record title

Former Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Baci has spoken out for the first time since losing her title to another.

We on Tuesday that the famous chef had lost her Guinness World Record for the longest time spent cooking while standing.

The announcement was made by the Guinness Book of Records on their social media accounts. The new record holder, Alan Fisher from Ireland, completed an astonishing cooking marathon of 119 hours and 57 minutes at his restaurant in Japan.

Following the news, the famous chef had updated her social media accounts bio.

Taking to her Twitter page to explain, Hilda stated that she remains a record holder in spirit and history. However, she has chosen to celebrate her predecessor for his achievement and spirit of competition.
She noted how the first record holder, Chef Lata respectfully acknowledged her as the winner and made some adjustments in her bio, hence, why she is following suit.

Hilda further noted how achieving such a record is no small feat and she knows firsthand what it feels like, the more reason why she admires Chef Alan.

“Just as Chef Lata respectfully acknowledged the new record holder by updating her bio and later fine-tuning the wording I’ve adjusted mine too. Achieving such a record is no small feat, and I know this firsthand. I have only the greatest admiration for the hard work it took for Alan to reach such heights. Sportsmanship is about recognizing progress, whether the accolade is in my bio or not. I remain a record holder in spirit and history. Let’s celebrate achievement and the spirit of competition”.

Taking to the comment section, while many applauded her for her maturity, others mocked her.

When your calls go unanswered because you are no longer useful

By Laura Miti

When I saw the video of President Lungu trying to call someone who was not picking up his call, I felt sad for him.

It reminded me of a politician friend who was fired a few years ago. I was intrigued at how bitterly he complained at the fact that his, once always ringing, phone was now silent. His words were – a whole day can now go by without this bloody phone ringing. No body wants to speak to me.

I thought then, as I did with President Lungu, that if not well managed, there can be no emptier life than that of a Zambian politician.

You see, we are a nation that thinks nothing about being hangers on, pretenders, leeches. If someone is in a powerful or influential position, we can make him or her genuinely believe they are God’s deputy and our bestest friend.

That ability to convince those in power that they are responsible for the very oxygen we breathe, is matched only by our capacity to ditch them as soon as they are no longer in high office.

Ditch them in order to immediately latch on to the next powerful or otherwise useful person. The grinning and tail wagging never stops.

Mulling over President Lungu’s video, I wondered who is to blame when a powerful person has people, who once seemed prepared to lie prostrate before them, treat them with such disdain.

Is it the formerly powerful person, or the former worshipper?

I guess both. Being able to receive or give the exultation that should be reserved for only Zambian mothers and fathers in law is a deep character flaw.

Similarly, finding out that someone you thought was a friend, was only so because of your status in life, says something unflattering about you and them.

This, by the way, is different from falling out with someone. That happens. But for someone I thought was my friend, to not pick up my call because I am no longer at a certain house number, or me them…… I honestly don’t think it possible.

Ummmm. I remembered something. But I will live it here.

Miles Sampa is a hired gun-Lusambo

0

Former Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has claimed that a known business man with close links to President Hichilema with interest in shopping malls is finding Matero MP Miles Sampa to cause confusion in the PF.

Mr Lusambo who did not disclose the full details of the businessman claimed that Mr. Sampa has been receiving money from him to disturb the running of the PF.

He has since warned the businessman that his investments will suffer when the UPND leaves power in 2026.

In a statement, Mr. Lusambo urged Zambians to ignore Mr. Sampa because he is acting like someone of unsound mind.

“We watched a programme on Prime TV last evening featuring Miles Sampa. The lack of substance was deafening. He exposed his lack of basic understanding of the PF, a party he profuses to love. What is clear as day and night however is that Miles is a hired gun,” he said.

“He appears to suffer from mental instability and being used by a merchant of darkness, a man whose only interest is exploiting Zambian businesses through his chain of shopping malls to kill the PF. We know that Miles is receiving financing from this evil businessman to destabilize the PF. We wish to warn this businessman that his businesses will pay heavily after 2026 for working against democracy in Zambia,” Mr Lusambo warned.

“The clarification by the US Embassy that the purported meeting between Ambassador Gonzales and Miles Sampa Infact never took place recently is another confirmation that Zambians are dealing with a man who lacks a sense of shame. Like a man battling mental health issues, Miles has no idea whether he is coming or coming. And obviously because of such condition, Miles has no sense of purpose and timing.”

He added, “For him, lying on social media that he met Ambassador Gonzales is just one of his simple stunts, like the way he used to pose for photos with a pistol when he was running for Lusaka Mayor. The man looks like he has a disjointed brain and his latest stance to attempt to hijack the PF is another one of his many episodes. We wish to assure the nation that when this all thing is over, Miles will not even remember a thing that he did.”

TAKE HEED: LIFE IS GETTING WORSE AND THE FEAR OF POPULAR PROTESTS IS REAL- Fred M’membe

TAKE HEED: LIFE IS GETTING WORSE AND THE FEAR OF POPULAR PROTESTS IS REAL

We have consistently reminded Mr Hakainde Hichilema about the sad reality of the hunger, poverty and despair currently prevailing in the country.

In doing so, we have also warned Mr Hichilema on how the rising cost of living is hurting the citizens and has become a national security issue.

We have said it time and again that the sadness, brokenness and desperation, which the rise in cost of living has brought to our people is heartbreaking, painful and difficult to comprehend and later on articulate in a way that best reflects what is currently happening in our society.

The increase in the cost of living is more than an economic squeeze: it is both a public health emergency and a national security matter with wide- ranging negative impacts if not addressed urgently.

It is in fact the first experience of such sharp and sustained cost of living increases since the 1980s. Prices are sharply rising everyday whilst the earning power remains stuck in a rut.

The cost of living has increased steadily and relentlessly over the past two years and there don’t seem to be quick political fixes our people were promised. No one today is saying “Bally will fix it” – not even Bally himself.

The situation keeps getting desperate and it is spiraling out of control. We have noticed that Mr Hichilema and his corrupt puppet regime is panicking. They are scared about how the people will react to all this. They don’t want anyone to talk about it – hence the attempt to silence key opposition leaders and critics.

They are scared that talking about these issues may spark protests, hence the attempt to silence, intimidate the opposition with all sorts of ridiculous charges and gestapo style policing tactics. But this will not work.

The fact still remains that this uncontrolled daily increase in the cost of living is a time bomb. Therefore, silencing critical voices and capturing critical institutions of governance like the judiciary, parliament and so on and so forth won’t do – it will be an exercise in futility which is bound to backfire. And without opposition or critical voices, the explosion of this time bomb may be uncontrollable.

What we are saying here is nothing new, even the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), in its November 2023, political and economic outlook for Zambia has highlighted a dire economic view and warned of popular protests against the regime owing to the rising cost of living.

“An uptick in popular protests is likely,” warned the report in part.

We socialists are patriots who love our country and would not want to defeat Mr Hichilema on the back of national failure. We therefore, urge him to heed our call and that of many others on this important matter, and urgently address the distressing challenges facing our people before it’s too late.

Sangwa’s use of word stupid irritates Mweetwa

By Isaac Zulu

The use of the word ‘stupid’ in describing the UPND response to shrinking democratic space in the country has upset Information Minister Cornelius Mweetwa.

And Mweetwa says Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti did not commit any illegality by recognising and authenticating the appointment of individuals to serve as Leader of Opposition and Whip in Parliament.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mweetwa urged Constitutional lawyer State Counsel John Sangwa to be civil and truthful when engaging in some public discourse.
“State Counsel John Sangwa is one of the most celebrated lawyers in the country. Most practicing lawyers, including myself, would have not made it in the legal fraternity. Most people in Zambia and the legal fraternity, in particular, look up to him. So we don’t expect him to be using words such as ‘stupidity’ when engaging in some public discourse,” Mweetwa said.

He also said the UPND government has restored the rule of law, contrary to assertions made by Sangwa that under the UPND administration the democratic space is shrinking.

Mweetwa said Zambians are now enjoying human rights and civil liberties, unlike what was prevailing under the previous regime where freedom of speech and assembly were curtailed.

And Mweetwa said Mutti was within the rules and regulations of Parliament by recognising and authenticating the appointment of Mafinga member of parliament Robert Chabinga and Kantanshi member of Parliament Anthony Mumba as Leader of Opposition and Opposition Whip, respectively.

Mweetwa, who is also Choma Central Member of Parliament, stressed that the Speaker of National Assembly was within the law.

He cited the Republican Constitution and Parliamentary Standing Orders that give guidance on how a Leader of Opposition and Opposition Whip in Parliament are appointed.

“For the sake of you colleagues in the media, we need to refer to Constitutional provisions. The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is provided for under Article 74(2) of the the Constitution of the Republic Zambia (Amendment) number 2 of 2016. The Constitution under Article 74 ( 2) provides that “the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly shall elect a Leader of the Opposition from amongst the members of parliament who are from the opposition,” Mweetwa explained. “The appointment of Kantanshi member of parliament Anthony Mumba as Opposition Whip is equally within the rules and regulations of Parliament. The appointment of Leader of Opposition in Parliament has not changed. The practice and tradition when it comes to appointing the Leader of Opposition and Opposition Whip has always been the same. It follows therefore, that the Speaker of National Assembly Madam Nelly Mutti did not breach any rules and regulations or any law by recognising and authenticating these appointments.”

He wondered why some Patriotic Front members of parliament are crying foul when they were part of the creation of lacunas in the Republican Constitution, which provides for the appointment of individuals to Constitutional offices.

“When those Constitutional Amendments were proposed, they used the arrogance of numbers in Parliament to shoot down progressive ideas. They are now crying that they are victims when they were part of the creation of lacunas in the Republican Constitution,” Mweetwa said.

He said the UPND administration has not been interfering in the operations of media houses, which he said is indicative that there is press freedom in the country.

“No DC (district commissioner) has stormed a radio station to disrupt a programme featuring an opposition leader, no journalist has been beaten by a party cadre. No Post Newspaper has been closed, no Prime TV has been closed, no Muvi TV has been closed and no Breeze FM radio has been closed. This is indicative that the UPND is not interfering in the operations of media houses,” Mweetwa said. “There is press freedom and people are enjoying their human rights and civil liberties.”

Use The Opportunity To Meet Our People, PF President Edgar Lungu Tells Suspended MPs

USE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET OUR PEOPLE, PF PRESIDENT TELLS SUSPENDED MPS

Lusaka- Wednesday 8th November 2023

…the people have been witnesses to the injustices being perpetrated against you…

Patriotic Front President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has advised Members of Parliament that have been suspended, to use the period to meet people in their constituencies and explain what was currently happening in the country.

Speaking when he met the MPs shortly after they were suspended, President Lungu expressed concern at the shrinking democratic space in the country and bemoaned the sustained attacks on institutions of democracy and governance by the Executive.

He encouraged the MPs that their quest to foster freedom of expression in the House was noble despite determined efforts to curtail them by the Speaker.

He said the occurrences in Parliament was part of a larger scheme to impose a dictatorship and undermine democracy in Zambia.

He said that with the capital investment done by his government over the years to ensure that parliamentary proceedings were covered live on national television, Zambians have been witnesses to the frustrations thrown at the MPs to curtail their effective contributions to parliamentary and national affairs.

He expressed concern that the suspension of the MPs came when the National Assembly was scrutinizing and approving the 2024 National budget.
He however urged the MPs to take interest in the continous voter registration and NRC issuance currently going on without much publicity.
He urged the MPs to alert their electorate to participate in the exercises.

Last week, Members of Parliament supported the protest by Kamfisa Member of Parliament, Christopher Kangombe, who urged the Speaker to allow debates in the House.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Nellie Mutti ordered Kangombe out of the House.

She proceeded to charge the MPs that supported Kangombe.

While the MPs were waiting for a hearing with the Privileges and Abscences Committee, Mutti jumped the process and proceeded to suspend the MPs without a hearing.

NELLY MUTTI HAS LOST HER LEGITIMACY- HON MUNDUBILE.

…….says the suspension of MPs is a dress rehearsal to a one party state.

LUSAKA……..Wednesday, November 8, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

Legitimately Elected Leader of Opposition Brian Mundubile says the desperate attempts by Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti to save herself from the motion of Impeachment will not work.

This follows the suspension of more than 16 Members of Parliament for 30 days, just a day when Nkana Lawmaker Binwell Mpundu was expected to move a Motion of Impeachment against the speaker which has been supported by 58 other MPs.

Speaking to the media, Hon Mundubile said the speaker has lost her legimacy and has no mandate to run Parliament.

He said the continuous breach of the Constitution is a clear indication that Hon Mutti is not fit to preside over the house.

Hon Mundubile has agreed with the comments by learned lawyer John Sangwa that Nelly Mutti is a candidate for Prison because she has breached the Constitution.

And Hon Mundubile has heaped praise on his fellow suspended MPs for defending the Constitution.

“I want to call you the heroes of democracy, what you have demonstrated today shows that you are able to stand up in defence of the Constitution.

You are the gallant soldiers. You showed Madam Nelly Mutti that you will stand and defend the constitution,” he said.

And Hon Mundubile said PF MPs have been instructed not to accept any immoral clauses which might be sneaked into Parliament during the period when other members are serving suspensions.

He said the suspension is a dress rehearsal on how they can run the country as a one party state.

“We are lucky that we have instructed our members to be on the look out to ensure that you check what they are trying to sneak into Parliament. They are now doing a dress rehearsal to see how they can run a one party state. The speaker who made the decision, is the same speaker whom these members have petitioned against,” he said.

Meanwhile, PF Chairman Legal and Lukashya MP Hon George Chisanga said the suspension is connected to the Schemes Miles Sampa has been attempting to take over Patriotic Front.

He said it is being done to ensure that Mr Chabinga who was appointed leader of Opposition can easily walk into Parliament.

He said Mr Chabinga was not even in the house to stand with his perceived MPs following his ilegal appointment.

He said the speaker would like to destroy Parliament as she continues to breach the Constitution.

Hon Chisanga said the suspension is extremely unprecedented because all the MPs have been suspended without being heard.

He said it is clear that the Speaker thinks only PF and Independent MPs must be punished.

“We receive those letters on Wednesday night and we were expected to exculpate ourselves on Thursday. They have come in Parliament with a view to weaken us. We have complaints against the Members of the UPND but the speaker has never written to any of them,” he said.

SOLVING A NEW PROBLEM USING SAME TOOLS: KWACHA DEPRECIATION- Fred M’membe

SOLVING A NEW PROBLEM USING SAME TOOLS: KWACHA DEPRECIATION

The Kwacha has been on a continuous depreciation trail, now trading towards K23. This is despite perceived good economic news as follows:
1. Best budget ever for 2024

2. Successful MoU on Paris Club debt as part of debt restructuring

3. Imminent agreement with Eurobond Debt – private creditors

4. Resolution of KCM being handed back to Vedanta and agreement signed

5. Potential resolution of Mopani mines in sight

6. $15 billion ZNS investment in a new smelter which construction will begin in next 2 months

7. Increased investor confidence resulting in $8.7 billion investment pledges disclosed by ZDA

8. Stabilisation of mealie meal prices using ZNS
9. Further disbursement of $188 million on the IMF ECF following signing of Paris Club creditors MoU

10. Good and transparent governance as proclaimed by Mr Hakainde Hichilema

11. Several progressive MoUs signed during presidential trips of Mr Hichilema

To mention but a few ‘positive pronouncements and positive economic developments’!

One would have expected a strong Kwacha performance given these good pronouncements. Alas, the Kwacha is instead going South as the second worst performing currency as reported by Bloomberg.

The Bank of Zambia after a long time decided to increase the Statutory Reserve Ratio in February 2023 to curb Kwacha depreciation and inflation by 2.5 per cent. In addition, Bank of Zambia has consistently raised the Monetary Policy Rate at its quarterly meetings to curb inflation and Kwacha depreciation, coupled with direct market intervention by pumping colossal sums of Dollars from International Reserves into the market.

Despite these bullish measures, the Kwacha continues heading South, now trading around K22.8 and inflation jumping to 12.6 per cent. Most recently, Bank of Zambia has again increased the statutory reserve ratio by 3 per cent hoping to curb inflation and Kwacha depreciation. Prior to this decision Kwacha was trading at K22. Post the announcement Kwacha is heading to K23. We also anticipate a further 100 basis points increase on the Monetary Policy Rate at the Bank of Zambia’s November 22 Monetary Policy Committee given the hawkish contractionary economic policy pronouncements.

Economic commentators have consistently commented against such Monetary Policy measures which they say will hurt the economy and create a serious liquidity crunch and reduce access to credit, consequently inhibiting economic growth.

The question is why is the Bank of Zambia using the same tools which do not seem to work? Is it because we are reading text book theories and failing to see reality on the ground? Why not for instance just reverse the mining tax waivers where we were collecting $400 million annually compared to $80 million we are now collecting?

The Monetary Policy tools consistently being applied have failed. Why use same failed tools to resolve a new problem?

As lawyers say,
I rest my case!

UPND Cadres’ Influence on Institutions- Edwin Lifwekelo

UPND Cadres’ Influence on Institutions

As if it’s not a standard operating procedure in all ‘perfect ‘ democracies!

8th November, 2023

Zambia, like many democratic nations, relies on its institutions to ensure fair and transparent governance. These establishments, such as the Elections Commission of Zambia, the judiciary, and Parliament, play a crucial role in upholding democratic values. However, the infiltration of UPND (United Party for National Development) cadres within these institutions poses a threat to our democracy, undermining freedom and professionalism, ultimately neglecting the best interests of the Zambian people.

The strength of democracy relies on the independence and impartiality of its governing institutions. It’s disheartening that in our country, all these systems seem to be deteriorating.

The Elections Commission, Courts, and Parliament serve as the foundation of this structure. They are entrusted with ensuring fair elections, interpreting and upholding the rule of law, and representing the diverse voices of the populace in the legislative process.

UPND cadres have either been appointed or have infiltrated these institutions, casting a shadow on their independence.

The credibility of the Elections Commission of Zambia in conducting elections is crucial for any democratic system. The presence of these cadres in appointed positions indicates UPND’s preparation for the 2026 General elections. It’s imperative they do not interfere with the electoral process; their intentions are apparent.

An impartial judiciary is fundamental to a just and fair legal system. The interference and political pressure on the courts compromise the rule of law and the judiciary’s ability to deliver unbiased justice. This indicates a situation where citizens are left to fend for themselves.

Meanwhile, Parliament is meant to represent the people’s will and enact laws in the nation’s interest. The conduct of the Speakers in Parliament leaves much to be desired. They swiftly interpret the law when it aligns with their agenda but display reluctance when it benefits the Opposition. This behavior is both a shame and an embarrassment to Zambia.

These are the “IMIGALATO” HH mentioned when addressing the people. Instead of offering hope and a vision for the future, he diverted attention to the Patriotic Front Party regrouping. It’s unfortunate to witness someone of such standing break down. Bitterness has turned him into a dictator, living in constant fear of the unknown.

To the Zambian people and leaders, let’s work together to strengthen these institutions and uphold the democratic principles essential for the nation’s progress.

OPEN LETTER TO THE CLERK OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

RESPONSE TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PRESS RELEASE – PRECEDENCE CANNOT OVERRIDE CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS

Dear Clerk of the National Assembly,

We have read with great concern the recent press release regarding the process of the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

While we appreciate the explanation provided regarding the precedence set in previous appointments, we must express our deep disagreement with the notion that precedence should override constitutional provisions.

The Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) No.2 of 2016 clearly states in Article 74 (2) that the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly shall elect a leader of the opposition from amongst the Members of Parliament who are from the opposition. This provision unequivocally requires adherence to the constitutional stipulations, without any room for deviation based on precedence or party communication.

The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is a pivotal element in the functioning of our democratic system, and it is of utmost importance that this process is conducted in strict accordance with the constitutional provisions. By upholding the supremacy of the Constitution, we ensure the integrity and legitimacy of our democratic institutions.

The justification provided in the press release, stating that the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is solely authenticated and announced by the Speaker of the National Assembly, overlooks the requirement for the opposition party itself to elect and communicate the appointment. The Speaker’s role is not limited to mere authentication but extends to upholding and following the constitutional provisions governing the appointment process.

While we understand the need for procedural clarity and precedence, it is crucial to emphasize that the Constitution is the highest law of the land, serving as the foundation upon which our democratic principles rest. Precedence should serve as a guide, but it cannot supersede or override the constitutional framework that safeguards the democratic rights of the Zambian people.

In light of these concerns, we strongly urge the National Assembly and its esteemed leaders to reconsider their stance on this matter. It is imperative to ensure that all appointments, including that of the Leader of the Opposition, adhere strictly to the constitutional provisions, thereby preserving the democratic fabric of our nation.

We kindly request that you take our concerns into consideration and engage in open dialogue to address this issue promptly. The Zambian people deserve a transparent and accountable political system that upholds the principles of the Constitution and ensures the fair representation of all voices.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Lawrence Mwelwa

Hichilema Is Exchanging Zambian Milling Jobs For South African Gmo Mealie Meal- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA IS EXCHANGING ZAMBIAN MILLING JOBS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN GMO MEALIE MEAL

Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s importation of GMO mealie meal from South Africa is tantamount to exporting our milling jobs to that country.

It would have been much wiser to import maize than the GMO mealie meal he is importing. We say this because importation of maize instead of mealie meal would keep our milling plants operating and our people in jobs.

And our transporters too would have more to transport – mealie meal, maize bran, and so on and so forth. Bran is a byproduct of flour or grits manufacture from maize grain. It consists principally of outer skins, some germ fragments, and endosperm particles.

Maize bran is an extremely valuable product. It is highly used in the production of stock feeds of all sorts. Our millers export a lot maize bran to Botswana. The transportation of maize bran to Botswana helps to keep our transporters in business and their drivers and other employees in employment.

And Zambians have for all years resisted GMO mealie meal. What has changed?

Mr Hichilema will be importing GMO mealie meal from South Africa for the next 10 months.

Clearly, this means that we don’t have enough maize stocks in the country. Yet they are still issuing licences to export mealie meal? What’s the logic?

At the rate Mr Hichilema is killing private sector jobs many of our people will die without ever seeing a pay slip. And at the rate the economy is further crumbling – if the inflation and exchange rates are anything to go by – most of our young people shall reach pensionable age without having been formally employed.

It is now clear by all standards that they’ve failed in their attempts to get the economy going again and improve the livelihoods of the people.

This is a failed government and it’s just a matter of time before it gets to a level where it will not be able to do anything about the economy and the hardships facing our people.

This country is in a free-fall!

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PRESS RELEASE
PRESS STATEMENT
For immediate release,

7th November, 2023

STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF ZAMBIA OVER THE PROCESS OF THE AFPOINTMENT OF THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

Following the announcement of the new Leader of the Opposition by the Speaker of the National
Assembly of Zambia, Rt. Honourable Nelly B K Muti, MP, FAPRA and the consequent debate
in the public domain, the Clerk of the National Assembly wishes to state the following:

The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is provided for under Artiele 74 (2) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) No.2 of 2016.

The Constitution under Article 74 (2) provides that, “the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly shall elect a leader of the opposition from
amongst the Members of Parliament who are from the opposition.

The nation will recall that following the enactment of the new Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) No. 2 of 2016, the United National Development Party (UPND) appointed Mr. Jack Mwimbu, MP as the Leader of the Opposition following communication from the UPND Secretary General.

In a similar manner, following the 2021 general elections and the emergency of the Patriotic
Front (PF) as the largest opposition political party in Parliament Mr. Brian Mundubile, MP was
appointed as the Leader of the Opposition by the Patriotic Front Party.

This again was
communicated to the Speaker of the National Assembly by the then Seretary General of the
Patriotic Front, Mr Davies Mwila.

In light of this precedence, the Speaker of the National Assembly received a Ietter from the Patriotic Front (PF) signed by the Secretary General of the Party, Mr Morgan Ng’ona to the
effect that Mafinga Member of Parliament, Mr. Robert Chabinga, MP had been appointed as Leader of the Opposition replacing Mporokoso Member of Parliament, Mr. Brian Mundubile MP.

Before, the announcement of the changes were made, the office of the Clerk, wrote to the Registrar of Societies to confirm the office Bearers of the Patriotic Front Party.

In the response to the Clerk, the Registrar of Societies confirmed being in receipt of new office Bearers of the Patriotic Front Party, among whom was Mr Morgan Ngona as Secretary General.

You will note that in all the three cited cases, the Leader of the Opposition was communicated by
the Sectetary General to the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The role of the Speaker
therefore, in all these appointments is to merely authenticate the appointment and to announce to
the House and the country in that regard, the National Assembly does not concern itself with the intra-party manner in which the election of the Leader of the Opposition is conducted.

Any member of the public who wishes to obtain more information or clarify on this or any other matter concerning procedures of the National Assembly may contact the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly.

ANDD LOOKS FORWARD TO REGISTRATION OF GOVT – VEDANTA KCM DEAL IN ARBITRATION COURT

ANDD LOOKS FORWARD TO REGISTRATION OF GOVT – VEDANTA KCM DEAL IN ARBITRATION COURT

…after the two parties signed the shareholder agreement and implementation agreement on Monday

The Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) says it is now looking forward for Vedanta Resources and government to register their signed agreements in the courts of arbitration in London.

ANDD Executive Director Samuel Banda believes that this will speed up the transition process for Vedanta Resources to fully take control of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and begin to implement its investment commitments.

Mr Banda has told journalists in Lusaka that the signing of the shareholders agreement and implementation agreement by government and Vedanta Resources is a clear indication and demonstration that both parties are highly committed to resuscitate KCM, make it viable to promote national development and social economic growth.

“The signing of the agreements is very progressive as it has instilled and amplified confidence amongst the stakeholders towards the transition process. As ANDD we wish to state that the co-operation between the two parties Vedanta Resources and government is very instrumental towards our shared vision for national progress and development in the mining sector which is our key economic backbone as it accounts for eighty percent of our GDP,” said Mr Banda.

“Therefore, we also want to state that we are profoundly happy with the investment commitment that Vedanta Resources has committed to invest into KCM such as the injection of US$1 billion for mining recapitalization and development, US$ 20 million for corporate social responsibility programmes (which will address key economic sectors such as health, education, sports development, agriculture among others) and the allocation of US$ 250 million to clear off debt owed by KCM to suppliers and contractors.”

He also commended President Hakainde Hichilema’s government for it’s commitment to revamp the mining sector.

“As the Advocates for National Development and Democracy, we would like to commend the Government of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema and Vedanta Resources for signing the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Vedanta Resources shareholders agreement and implementation agreement which is a key fundamental aspect to the transition process to ensure that Vedanta Resources takes full control of KCM after all the legal frameworks. We are optimistic that once Vedanta Resources injects US$250 million by clearing off the debt that KCM is owing to the suppliers and contractors, that will influence our money markets positively. The kwacha will begin to appreciate because there will be more dollars in circulation which is very important for the growth of our domestic economy and promotion of commerce and trade,” he added.

“We are optimistic that Vedanta Resources a mining giant with its global footprint, diversified business portfolio and a high technical and huge financial capacity will successfully resuscitate KCM and contribute positively to our national social economic development. With KCM operating optimally, it will now be easy for Government to achieve the 3 million metric tonnes copper production target by 2031.”

MUTTI PROCEEDS HERSELF AS A UPND SYMPATHIZER

….. President HH should avoid appointing party cadres in sensitive institutions, says UPPZ leader

Kitwe… Wednesday November 8, 2023

The opposition United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to reconsider the appointment of party cadres in sensitive positions and prioritize the selection of individuals based on their competence, experience, and dedication to public service.

UPPZ leader Charles Chanda says Nelly Mutti as the Speaker of the National Assembly starkly highlights this troubling pattern of cadre behavior much as she was not appointed but proceeds herself as a UPND sympathizer.

Mr Chanda says regrettably, Madam Mutti has gloriously mismanaged her position, leading to serious implications for the country.

He says this not only erode public trust but also threaten the principles of transparency, accountability, and meritocracy that are essential for the proper functioning of the democratic institutions.

“When individuals are appointed based solely on their party affiliation rather than their qualifications and expertise, the consequences are evident in day-to-day operations and decision-making. As a responsible opposition party, UPPZ will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and an inclusive democratic process. We believe that only through fair and unbiased appointments can Zambia truly prosper and achieve lasting peace,” he said.

Mr Chanda has questioned the impartiality and quality of work delivered by these cadres, as they often end up favoring fellow party members, thereby compromising the integrity and effectiveness of these institutions.

“In particular, President Hakainde Hichilema needs to realize that governance of Zambia should not replicate the style of a political party. These appointments not only erode public trust but also threaten the principles of transparency, accountability, and meritocracy that are essential for the proper functioning of our democratic institutions. When individuals are appointed based solely on their party affiliation rather than their qualifications and expertise, the consequences are evident in day-to-day operations and decision-making,” he added.

“The implications of such compromised appointments are far-reaching. They hinder the independence and impartiality of institutions, undermine the public’s faith in the government’s ability to act in their best interest, and perpetuate a culture of favoritism and nepotism within the system. Furthermore, they stifle the potential for genuine bipartisan collaboration, impede national progress, and weaken the democratic fabric of our beloved nation.”

The United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia leader has since called on President Hichilema to address these concerns and uphold the principles of good governance.

CCC MPs recalled by ‘bogus’ SG take their appeal to Supreme Court

Main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MPs who were recalled by self-proclaimed party Interim Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the High Court ruling that upheld their recall.

The 14 legislators submitted that the High Court judge erred in law by making a finding that the letters of recall by Tshabangu were valid.

They further submitted that the High Court made a mistake in finding that Tshabangu had authority to recall them.

“The Court a quo grossly erred in fact and in law when it made a finding that the Respondent (Tshabangu) proved that he had authority to represent and act on behalf of the Citizens Coalition for Change when there was no such evidence before it.

“The Court a quo grossly erred in law and in fact by dismissing the matter on the basis that the Citizens Coalition for Change had not been joined as a party to the proceedings when the same Court had made a finding that the non-joinder of the Citizens Coalition for Change was not fatal to the case,” the legislators submitted.

“The court a quo erred in law and in fact by making a finding that the membership of the Appellants and Tshabangu, the Citizens Coalition for Change and any alleged termination thereof could not be proved in the absence of the Citizens Coalition for Change when the evidence before it dictated otherwise.

“Having found that the involvement of the Citizens Coalition for Change was central to its determination, the court a quo erred in law by failing to join that party mero motu given that the law permits it to do so.”

The legislators are seeking the Supreme Court to grant their application by setting aside High Court judgement by Justice Munamato Mutevedzi.

They also seek the court to declare that Tshabangu had no authority to write letters on behalf of the CCC.

The recalled legislators want the Supreme Court to grant an order that they be deemed to be still Members of Parliament duly elected on a CCC ticket.

However the nomination court proceeded on Tuesday in Bulawayo and Harare.

GIRL RETRIEVED FROM MARRIAGE, PARENTS ARRESTED

A fourteen year old girl of Mazabuka District has been retrieved from a marriage that was consented by her parents in Chief Mwanachingwala’s Area leading to the arrest of her parents who were picked up from the district administration office, a day after the wedding ceremony.

The girl, a grade eight pupil, was handed over to her eighteen year old man on Sunday at a traditional wedding with hundreds of residents camping at the venue the night before to witness the colourful ceremony with some headmen in attendance.

Further investigations revealed that some named workers at Mukuyu Rural Health Center were convinced to forge the victim’s birth records which indicated that she was seventeen years old instead of fourteen, a record indicated at her former school.

Acting on a whistleblower’s call, Mazabuka District Education Board Secretary, Christeta Mwale, rushed to the area on the same day but failed to retrieve the girl after being greeted by a hostile crowd which waited for the marriage ceremony to start.

The DEBS, who was accompanied by Young Women Christian Association Mazabuka District Focal Point Person, Norah Namakando, bemoaned the fact that the girl was forced to abandon her education for marriage under her parent’s watch.

And speaking following the retrieval and relocation of the girl to a safe house, Namakando observed that it has become concerning that some parents are at the forefront supporting illegal activities which violate children’s rights.

Namakando expressed worry that increasing cases of underage marriages have potential to increase poverty levels in the country considering that the man the girl was to be married to, was not financially stable after he equally abandoned school.

Namakando tells Byta FM News that the girl has since been taken for medical examination at one of the facilities further calling on the Government to reinforce laws that protect children’s rights.

Efforts to get a comment from the Zambia Police on what the two suspects have been charged with proved futile by broadcast time but sources indicate that they were released on bond.

Ukraine war: Army leader Zaluzhny’s aide killed by grenade birthday gift

0

A birthday present grenade exploded and caused the death of Valery Zaluzhny’s close assistant, who worked for Ukraine’s armed forces.

Maj Hennadiy Chastyakov, who is 39 years old, went back to his home with gifts he got from his coworkers. He was opening those gifts with his son when suddenly, the grenade exploded.

Maj Chastyakov was murdered and his 13-year-old son was badly injured.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that the boy began twisting the ring on the grenade.

Next, the person in charge of fixing things took the explosive from the young person and removed the ring, which led to a very sad and dangerous blast.

Later on, the prosecutors explained that he had accidentally made the grenade explode while trying to remove it from his son.

The explosion was called a “sad accident” and the minister asked people to wait for the results of an official investigation. The police said that there was an explosion in a family apartment in Chaiky, which is located on the outskirts of Kyiv. The explosion happened because someone was not being careful while handling ammunition.

But it quickly became known that five more grenades were discovered in the apartment. Mr Klymenko said that someone in his army team gave him the presents.

During a search, two grenades that looked the same were discovered on a colleague who is a colonel in the army.

Pictures taken at the location showed more grenades on the floor of the apartment, as well as other gift bags. Maj Chastyakov had apparently taken the grenades home in a bag along with a bottle of whisky.

Someone told Ukrainska Pravda that the bottle was inside a gift bag with glasses that looked like grenades. The explosion happened when he opened the bag. Other reports stated that his coworker had given him a bottle, saying: “You’re not easily surprised, so I thought I’d give you combat grenades and a nice bottle of whisky. ”

Gen Zaluzhny talked about the very painful and sad time for the Ukrainian military and for himself personally. He said that Maj Chastyakov has been a reliable person for support since Russia’s big invasion in February 2022.

He died is another problem for the Ukrainian military. Before, a missile attack killed 19 soldiers during a Russian attack on an awards ceremony near the front line in the southern part of Zaporizhzhia. Many people were angry because they thought it was dangerous to have the ceremony in that area.

Pro-government politician Maryana Bezulha said that the death of Maj Chastyakov was caused by someone not being careful. She also mentioned that it was sad for him to die on his birthday. Grenades are not given as gifts, they are given for a specific purpose.

But some Ukrainian commentators have doubted the official reason for the explosion. They think it could have been a deliberate attack on Gen Zaluzhny because they believe he might have gone to his assistant’s birthday party.

Last week, the top leader openly shared his honest thoughts about the situation on Ukraine’s borders where Russia’s invading forces are present.

“He told the Economist that we have reached a point where our technology is at the same level as in World War One, leading to a stalemate. ” “It is unlikely to have any profound or magnificent discovery. ”

Both the Kremlin and President Volodymr Zelensky said that the war was not stuck and couldn’t move forward. Today, many individuals are feeling exhausted and have varying viewpoints. “That is easy to understand, but there is no situation where neither side can win,” Mr. Zelensky said over the weekend.

During his regular speech on Monday night, he asked Ukrainians to stay united and avoid disagreements or getting distracted with other things.

He also said that it’s not a good time to have presidential elections next spring because Ukraine is at war and under martial law. He got chosen in 2019.

Nathan Woodyard found not guilty in Elijah McClain’s death

0

Another police officer in Colorado has been found not guilty in the case of Elijah McClain’s death. Elijah McClain passed away in 2019 after being given ketamine and held down.

Nathan Woodyard, who is 34 years old, was declared not guilty of the charges of causing someone’s death accidentally and causing someone’s death due to reckless behavior.

Another officer named Jason Rosenblatt was found not guilty in October. Another person named Randy Roedema was convicted and found guilty.

The passing of Mr. McClain, a black man, received more attention again following the passing of George Floyd.

Mr McClain, a 23-year-old person who gives massages, was walking back to his house from a store in a neighborhood called Aurora in Denver. Three police officers, who were white, stopped him because someone had reported seeing someone suspicious in the area.

He was wearing a mask to keep himself warm because he often gets very cold due to his anaemia. He was also wearing headphones. McClain didn’t listen to the officers when they told him to stop.

A video was recorded of Mr. McClain being forced to the ground and put in a chokehold. He kept saying “I can’t breathe. ” A doctor later gave him a shot of ketamine, a medicine that makes you relaxed and sleepy. He never woke up and died three days after being removed from life support.

Mr Woodyard put Mr. McClain in a chokehold during the incident. He could have gone to jail for many years if found guilty.

During the trial that lasted a week, Mr. Woodyard said that he put Mr. McClain in a chokehold because he was afraid for his own life. He claimed that he heard Mr. McClain say that he wanted to regain control.

Another officer also said that Mr. McClain tried to grab Mr. Woodyard’s weapon – the prosecutors disagree with this accusation, and there is no evidence from the footage that supports it.

During the trial, Mr. Woodyard’s lawyers said that he wasn’t there when Mr. McClain’s condition got worse. The video from the body camera shows that he had moved away.
In an email mentioned in the Washington Post, Mr. Woodyard’s lawyers said that they understand the sad situation of Mr. McClain’s death but are glad that they believe their client received a fair outcome.

It was unsure if Mr Woodyard would return to work in Aurora. He wasn’t allowed to work or receive any money in 2020.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said that even though the outcome of the verdict was not what they wanted, they are still determined to seek justice for Elijah McClain.

“We need to do everything we can to prevent law enforcement from using force in a way that is against the law and not necessary. This kind of force can lead to people losing their lives,” he further emphasized.

In October, a jury determined that officer Randy Roedema was responsible for causing someone’s death and injuring them, and they found him guilty of these crimes. Jason Rosenblatt was found not guilty of causing someone’s death due to extreme carelessness, causing someone’s death due to criminal negligence, and severely injuring someone in an attack.

Two ambulance workers, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec, will have to go to court later this year.

Ashling Murphy’s alleged murderer lies to jurors – Court hearing

0

A man who is being blamed for killing a schoolteacher in the Republic of Ireland last year has been accused of telling untrue and disrespectful lies during his trial, according to a court in Dublin.

Jozef Puska, who lives in Lynally Grove, Mucklagh in County Offaly, is accused of killing Ashling Murphy.

A 23-year-old named Ms Murphy was attacked and killed while running near Tullamore in January 2022.

Mr Puska says he did not kill her and is denying the charge.

After three weeks of presenting evidence, the lawyers for the defense and prosecution have made their final arguments in court.

The jurors will start thinking about their decision on Wednesday.

Last week, Mr. Puska testified that he was trying to assist Ms. Murphy after she was assaulted by another man. He also mentioned that the same man had attacked and stabbed him.

The court heard from Irish police officers, known as gardaí, who said that Mr. Puska confessed to killing Ms. Murphy while he was getting treated at a hospital in Dublin.

The lawyer, Anne-Marie Lawlor, said there was a lot of evidence that strongly showed Mr. Puska was guilty.

Ms Lawlor said that Ms Murphy likely had injuries caused by trying to protect herself, and DNA analysis done by forensic experts found a match with Mr Puksa.

She said to the jury that Mr. Puska said very mean lies about saving Ashling Murphy’s life.

“She said he murdered her in a very cruel way. ”

“He caused serious injuries to her that resulted in her death. ”

Ms Lawlor said that Mr. Puska told lies and untruths, some of which she thinks are very bad and contemptible. She also said that these lies made him less trustworthy and reliable.
Lawyer Michael Bowman argued that the verdict should be based solely on the facts of the case, not on feelings, bias, or favoritism.

He told the jurors not to make a decision without being open-minded.

Mr Bowman said that Mr. Puska made things worse for himself by behaving in a certain way after Ms. Murphy died One of those actions was suggesting that the clothes he was wearing that day should be destroyed.

He said that this made people suspicious of him.

But Bowman said that telling lies does not always mean someone is guilty.

He said the information about the situation was not as simple as the prosecution wants you to think.

Mr Puska arrived in court wearing a grey jacket and a shirt with no tie next to a translator.

Ms Murphy’s family were also present in court, just like they have been throughout the trial.

Trial continues…

Hundreds of our citizens still there in Gaza – Canadian foreign ministry

0

Many Canadians were taken out of the troubled area known as Gaza on Tuesday as a safety measure.

Over 400 people in Canada have signed up to leave the country.

This is the first time that Canadians have been included on a list published by border authorities in Gaza. This happened after the Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt opened last week.

Canada’s government will help them with their journey to Cairo and then onwards to Canada.

On social media, Canadian foreign affairs Melanie Joly said that the first group of Canadians have been brought out of Gaza.

Canadian diplomats met them at the border with Egypt, said Ms Joly. She described the evacuation as a small glimmer of hope during difficult times.

She also mentioned that her team is still trying to help bring back the rest of the Canadians.

“She said you can be sure that this is our top concern. ”

Many Canadians have been eagerly waiting to leave ever since the Rafah crossing was opened. For many days, there were no Canadians allowed to leave.

However, everything changed on Tuesday when the names of the first 80 Canadians who were given permission to enter Egypt were made public.

Canada’s foreign ministry previously stated that the situation is constantly changing and hard to predict. They advised people to be ready for long waits.

Egypt and Israel have made a list of people who are allowed to cross between their borders. The embassies of the countries involved are told about the list in advance so they can get ready to welcome their citizens who will be crossing.

Seham al-Batnejy, a Palestinian-Canadian, said on Sunday that she and her daughter have been going to the Rafah border crossing for five days, hoping to leave.

We are having a lot of difficulties. Without water, electricity, and food. “It’s a really tough situation, more difficult than you can imagine,” she said.

People who go across will be met by embassy workers on the Egyptian side, where they can stay for a maximum of 72 hours.

Global Affairs will help and support registered Canadians with travel, accommodation, food, and basic things they need.

Four people from Canada were able to escape from Gaza, apparently with the help of someone else. The government did not share specific information about this because they want to protect people’s privacy.

The border between Gaza and Egypt opened on Wednesday, allowing some regular people from Gaza and many foreigners to leave. Last week, hundreds of foreign citizens used this crossing to leave Gaza.

This was the first chance for them to do something since the war started on 7 October. During this war, Hamas gunmen attacked southern Israel in a way that had never happened before and more than 1,400 people were killed.

After that, the Israeli army started a big bombing attack in Gaza, put the area under a total lockdown, and recently began a ground attack on the northern part of Gaza. The health department in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, has reported that over 10,000 individuals have died.

Foreigners leaving Gaza through the Rafah border crossing were stopped on Saturday and Sunday because of a disagreement about helping injured patients leave.

Europe migrant crisis: Italy to construct migrant hubs in Albania

0

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has announced the construction of two centers in Albania to accommodate many illegal migrants.

She shared the plan at a press meeting with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in Rome.

Ms Meloni said the places, which will open in the spring, will be able to help 36,000 people each year.

The plan will only affect migrants who are saved by Italian boats out at sea, not those who arrive directly on the shores of Italy.

The migrants will live in certain places while Italy looks into their requests for permission to stay, according to Ms. She also mentioned that pregnant women, children, and vulnerable individuals would not be affected by this plan.

She said that Italy will pay for the buildings and they will be able to house 3,000 people every month. The purpose of the buildings is to quickly process asylum applications and, if needed, send people back to their home countries.

The centres will be constructed at the port of Shengjin and the Gjader area in the northwestern part of Albania. Albania will give security personnel and police officers.

Ms Meloni said that even though Albania is not officially a part of the EU, it is acting in a similar way to a member. She said that she thinks “Albania is basically a European country” and expressed her support for Albania joining the European Union.

Speaking in Italian, Mr. Rama spoke positively about the relationship between his country and Italy. He mentioned that the people and organizations in Italy offered assistance to Albanians in the 1990s when the Communist regime ended.

“Mr Rama said that it’s impossible to pay back this debt. ” “But when Italy asks for help, Albania is willing to respond. ”

Mr Rama said that it is clear to everyone that Italy is currently facing a challenging situation. Geography has brought some problems for Italy, as arriving in Italy means arriving in the European Union (EU). But when it comes to handling these arrivals as the EU, we understand how things work.

“We may not have enough ability to be the only solution, but we have the responsibility to. ” He said that Italy needs help.

Mr Rama said that he and Ms. Meloni talked about the agreement for the migrants center while the Prime Minister of Italy was on vacation in Albania during the summer.

The day after the plans were made known, a spokesperson from the European Commission told the BBC that they know about the “agreement” between the authorities in Italy and Albania, but they haven’t received all the specific information about it yet.

However, it mentioned that Italy still needs to turn the agreement into a legal document. It also stated that it is crucial for any agreement to follow EU and international laws.

It is expected that the Commission will wait until the Italian Parliament approves the plan before making a decision.

Politicians from opposing parties in Italy and Albania have expressed their disapproval of the agreement.

Riccardo Magi, the head of the Italian liberal party +Europa (More Europe), expressed his concerns about the plan, describing it as “scary” and comparing the centers to a “kind of Italian Guantanamo. ”

Mr Magi, who used to be called Twitter, wrote that this agreement is not valid. Italy cannot send people they save at sea to a non-EU country, treating them like objects.

Belind Kellici from Albania’s Democratic Party expressed concerns about the deal not being clear and open.

“Mr Kellici said that what Rama did is like betraying Albania, and it is the worst way to be disloyal to our country. ”

Edi Rama is the person who is against Albanians. He makes lots of young people leave the country every year and brings in illegal immigrants instead.

Andrea Costa, who is the president of a group that helps migrants in Rome called Baobab Experience, said to the BBC that the news of the announcement was unexpected and it shows that the Italian government’s immigration policies are going in the wrong direction.

Mr Costa said the centers could end up being similar to Lampedusa, an Italian island that many people use as an entry point to Europe.

He also talked about the British government’s plan to send many asylum seekers to Rwanda. He said that we don’t know if the centers in Albania will be like Guantanamo, Lampedusa, Rwanda, or a combination of all three places.

Ms Meloni leads the right-wing, nationalist Brothers of Italy party and is well-known for strongly opposing immigration. Since she became Prime Minister, she has declared a series of actions to stop illegal immigration, which includes keeping irregular migrants in detention.

Despite the fact that over 145,000 people who moved from one country to another have arrived in Italy this year, which is 52,000 more than the same time last year.

In April, the Italian ministers declared a state of emergency for six months because there were more migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa.

South African minister recounts scary robbery encounter

South Africa’s transport serve has portrayed how she was victimized at gun-point after her vehicle ceased on a thruway to alter a burst tire.

Sindisiwe Chikunga told a parliamentary committee that one of the conceal aggressors pointed a weapon at her head amid the difficulty early on Monday.

They stole a few portable workstations, a phone and her bodyguards’ weapons, she said.

South Africa has long confronted tall wrong doing levels, counting car-hijackings, kidnappings and smash-and-grabs.

But it is exceptionally unordinary for a government serve voyaging with equipped bodyguards to be ransacked in their vehicle.

“I’m in one piece, but the complete encounter was exceptionally traumatising,” Ms Chikunga told MPs.

She said that at 03:30 neighborhood time on Monday her bodyguards – or “defenders” – had got out of the car, which had been voyaging on a primary street south of Johannesburg, to supplant a burst tire.

That was when the thieves approached, forcing the bodyguards onto the floor and after that opening the car entryway.

They “pointed a weapon at my head and requested me to come out”, Ms Chikunga said.

They requested cash, but she clarified that she did not have any cash on her. They at that point looked through the vehicle taking what they may discover.

Still undermining her with their weapons, the thieves too attempted to require the minister’s ring but she told them: “This was the as it were thing that I have between my late spouse and myself, I esteem it so much.”

At one point the serve begun supplicating but was told to keep calm.

“We are fine, we are solid, we are lively. It was a appalling involvement… but God has leniency on us,” Ms Chikunga told parliamentarians as she wrapped up her account of what happened.

The police have affirmed that the theft took put and “a manhunt has since been propelled taking after this uncommon occurrence”, the AFP news organization reports citing police representative Brig Athlenda Mathe.

Alluding to a common strategy that hoodlums utilize, the service of transport said that the tires of the her car “were punctured by spikes [put on the street], bringing the car to a halt empowering the hoodlums to ransack the tenants of resources”.

The two bodyguards have been set on take off “until [they are] fit and appropriate to return to their posts”, Brig Mathe is cited by News24 as saying.

“Steps are beneath way to determine what unfolded as distant as VIP assurance conventions are concerned,” she included.

Within the most recent yearly overview about 1.3 million individuals said they had been victims of property wrongdoing, which sums to nearly 3% of the populace.

The multiplication of little arms is additionally a enormous issue in South Africa.

ANOTHER INTERNATIONAL REPORT FEARS POPULAR PROTESTS IN ZAMBIA

The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has issued its political and economic outlook on Zambia for 2023.

The forecast for 2023 gives grim economic picture and fears popular protests against government due high cost of living.

“An uptick in popular protests is likely.”

The report also states that President Hichilema will likely not be re-elected unless he deals with corruption in his Government among other things.

“An effective move against corruption is needed, if Mr Hichilema is to be re-elected in 2026.”

The 2022 IMF Country Report on Zambia also predicted civil unrest due to the high cost of living and political tensions.

Below are among forecast by the EIU.

• The economic outlook is less favourable in the short term, owing to belt-tightening measures.

The economic outlook is less favourable in the short term, owing to belt-tightening measures.

•High inflation, monetary tightening and undercapitalisation of major copper mines will keep growth low this year and next.

• We expect stronger growth in 2025-27 as rising mining output boosts exports and fiscal consolidation supports investor confidence.

• Zambia’s inflation rate will remain stubbornly high in 2023, at 10.4%. This is relatively high well above our forecast of 4.3% for Tanzania and 5.7% for South Africa. Inflation will stay above the 6-8% target ceiling until 2025 amid tight local food supply.

• Zambia will run a current-account surplus in 2023-27, aided by high copper prices and reduced external debt repayments.

• Capital inflows will strengthen, once a debt-restructuring deal is reached and new capital inflows, including FDI, rise.

• Zambia is heavily dependent on copper exports for foreign-exchange earnings and government revenue.

• High global copper prices will support fiscal consolidation, subject to the risk that a plunge in copper prices would negatively affect the fiscal balance. Key indicators 2022a 2023b 2024b 2025b 2026b

UPND has now become an unhinged demon, a delirious political creature, out of control and dangerous- Dr Canisius BANDA

0

THE WRATH OF THE GODS
[The Irrefutable Case Of The UPND And Its Cognitive Failure]

Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat.

The United Party for National Development [UPND], the ruling political party in Zambia, is now no longer compos mentis, it is now devoid of the required thinking for governing a country, Zambia.

The UPND has now become an unhinged demon, a delirious political creature, out of control and dangerous.

Frenzied, it is now devouring it’s very basis, our Republican Constitution.

In its altered state of mind, the UPND, seeing Zambia’s Republican Constitution as a leash, and not as a protector of its own existence and liberties, but as a hindrance to its self-preservation, it has now shredded this sacrosanct document to pieces.

The rule of law has ceased to exist in Zambia.

Zambia has now degenerated into a lawless jungle where each citizen has to defend himself and only the fittest should survive.

What was illegal has now become legal, and what was legal has now become illegal.

Zambia is now a failed State.

Nearly every public institution has now been adulterated and weaponized against law and order, the rule of law and democracy.

Teeming with pestilences, everything that the UPND now touches becomes rabid and deranged.

From its rotten womb of these pestilences, the UPND has now given birth to the monstrosity that is Miles SAMPA, an embodiment of illegality, a weaponized citizen and puppet who is now wreaking havoc on Zambia’s rule of law and democracy.

Beware of the demons we create.

It seems a dark comedy that causes me to want to laugh, but instead, it stirs rage within me and other nationalists, because it is a tragedy by all accounts which threatens the integrity of an entire nation, our Zambia.

The corrupt tentacles of the UPND have altered the sanity of the Registrar of Societies.

The corrupt tentacles of the UPND have caused illness in the Zambia Police Service making it to behave in an illegal manner as it now promotes and protects vermin and the destruction of constitutional democracy.

The corrupt tentacles of the UPND have now reached parliament, that once august house, causing it to fester division, causing it to brazenly breach Zambia’s Republican Constitution, and create such gross disorder never seen before in all the three republics of Zambia.

The corrupt tentacles of the UPND have now caused putridness to issue forth from the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation [ZNBC], a media house owned by the people.

Like a deranged spouse, ZNBC is now cheating the very people that sustain it.

Dabbling in things devilish, it is now a fallen institution, guilty of deceiving citizens, a crime so grave, against all ethics, and the Republic, which in a country governed by sanity and by the rule of law would lead to the immediate dissolution of its board.

Heads would roll.

In olden days, such heinous crimes, for their odiousness, were met by death by hanging.

But alas, sanity has left the land. Required cognition has departed our government. The heads that must roll are already roiled in a state of corruption.

As if to digress, it is indeed ironical, hurtful and a shame that the same whites we chased for us to re-attain our independence are the same whites today funding our commemoration of Independence Day.

As a people, what have we become?

You see, to govern is to control. And the suffix -ment means mental.

Government then means mind control.

But then when a ruling party is no longer in compos mentis, when it is deranged, when its mind is captured by a nefarious force, this then is what happens.

Confusion reigns.

What’s illegal becomes legal, and what’s legal becomes illegal.

Bedlam reigns.

The UPND is now NO LONGER fit for purpose.

It is in breach of Zambia’s Republican Constitution.

Its erratic behaviour now threatens not only democracy but the integrity of an entire nation, our motherland.

If not an insane one, what parent abandons his own child? This then is what the UPND has done to its own foot soldiers, it’s own loyal followers and members, as today they live in destitution, as if not in power, gnashing their teeth in poverty and agony.

Just how greedy and callous can an entity be?

To what end do we seek power if not to share it with the citizens, to end their poverty, and to uplift their livelihoods?

But then this story isn’t new. It has happened before and it will happen again in the future.

Its end is known.

This is what happens when any ruler departs from the divine principles of governance, the principles of equality, the principles of justice and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.

When this happens, the gods intervene to restore the default settings of existence, settings of order and balance.

The wrath of the gods is now upon the UPND. Much madness will soon follow.

The UPND’s behaviour is merely the storm before the calm, the chaos which precedes order.

For it is written that those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first deprive of reason.

Aluta continua!

The UPND has now taken us back to the days of the liberation struggle, and again, the hour to fight for our freedom, has come.

Indeed though suffering may endure for a night, joy surely comes in the morning.

Zambians will win in the end.

THERE IS NOTHING ATTRACTIVE IN UPND – GABRIEL BANDA

THERE IS NOTHING ATTRACTIVE IN UPND – GABRIEL BANDA

….as he tells off TREVOR MWIINDE for proposing violence against ECL

Lusaka, Tuesday, November 7, 2023 ( Smart Eagles )

UPND Deputy Youth Chairperson in Charge of Politics and Mobilisation Trevor Mwiinde has come under heavy criticism for proposing Violence against former Head of State Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In a video, Mr Mwiinde is quoted saying by coming back into active politics, Zambia’s Sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is behaving like a cadre and “if you continue on the path, Tukesa Kuponona.”

Reacting to the statement, Socialist Party National Youth Secretary Elias Gabriel Banda urged Mwiinde to tame his mouth and have respect to Elders.

Mr Banda wondered if UPND would allow Hakainde Hichilema to be ridiculed and insulted when he leaves office in 2026.

He said Mr Mwiinde must start by beating the youths in opposition if he really wants to attack the former Head of State.

Mr Banda said Mwiinde must emulate his Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso and start behaving like an adult.

“Trevor Mwiinde, have respect for ECL. We will not sit idle and watch you insult an elder and a former Head of State. If you want to ponona ECL, start with us. We will join PF youths and others. Emulate your Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso, grow up, you are an adult,” he said

Meanwhile, Mr Banda urged President Hakainde Hichilema to stop the harassment of the opposition particularly the PF if he is not in support with what is happening to the former ruling party.

He has also registered his disappointment in the manner the Speaker of the National Assembly has been conducted herself as a Presiding Officer.

While the UPND is almost three years in power, Mr Banda has called out the Government to state what has been achieved from the 10 points plan that was laid out during campaigns.

He noted that the refusal by the President to declare his assets makes the fight against corruption not genuine.

Mr Banda said the President must avail disclose to the Zambians how much he went with into Government.

NDOLA SAD NEWS, as TOM MTINE DIES at 97 YEARS

Alderman MTINE on Saturday, 11th February, 2023 celebrated his 97th Birthday at his residence in Northrise, Ndola.

Who is TOM MTINE?

TOM MTINE is one of Zambia’s earliest known MILLIONAIRES.

Mr. MTINE used to manage 53 local companies in the 1950s as CHAIRMAN of the LONRHO GROUP.

Mr. MTINE was also the FIRST CHAIRMAN of ZAMBIA AIRWAYS.

He was FIRST BLACK MAYOR of NDOLA around 1965-66 and the FIRST BLACK AFRICAN to run the FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION of ZAMBIA (FAZ) after independence.

He is an HONORARY MEMBER of the CONFEDERATION of AFRICAN FOOTBALL (CAF).

Mr. MTINE was awarded by FIFA during the global football governing body at the CENTENARY CELEBRATION in 2004 for his contribution to the GAME in Zambia.

What did Mr. MTINE say on his 96th Birthday?

Speaking when journalists from the Ndola Press Association visited him, Mr. MTINE cited PERCEVERANCE, SACRIFICE and HUMILITY as KEY to LONG LIFE.

“To do anything good you have to persevere.
And persevering is not a joke.
When you persevere you meet a lot of people and there you have to go forward,”
Mr. MTINE told journalists with a smile.

“In our language we say,
uzicepesa osati matukutuku ntawi zonse,”
he said.

“Look, life we have got to realise that we have got to look at ourselves. Stop this stop that. Stop drinking;
the door will open for you.
Now, having sacrificed a lot of things, you go forward,” Mr. MTINE said.

As a youth, Mr MTINE worked for the GOVERNMENT before moving into the private sector and later on rising to manage a group of companies.

After obtaining a Cambridge certificate, Mr MTINE learnt bookkeeping besides learning how to manage co-operative societies in Lusaka.

After managing cooperatives in Lusaka such as Chalimbana Teachers Training College, he got a transfer to Ndola at the start of the 1950s.

He worked in Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola, Luanshya and Mufulira.

After leaving the public sector, Mr. MTINE joined the NDOLA BAZAAR Limited where he was employed as a bookkeeper.

He later moved to another company and with his background of accounting and salesmanship which meant travelling a lot.

Mr. MTINE landed a job at Heinrich Syndicate as a public relations officer.

While at Heinrich Syndicate, Mr MTINE was among the staff that moved to LONRHO GROUP after its acquisition and as luck could be, at the new company that bought off Heinrich Syndicate, he earned himself an executive position.

He was first managing director at LONRHO and thereafter he became CHAIRMAN as he was in charge of many companies within the LONRHO GROUP.

In the past, Mr MTINE has been recalling the time he was special envoy of then President KENNETH KAUNDA to South Africa where he went to deliver a classified letter in a secret way for the release of incarcerated FREEDOM FIGHTER, NELSON MANDELA in the 1980s.

“It was not easy, it was a risk. I had to put that letter at the back of my head to pass through Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe was more frightening than South Africa.

The letter was folded, placed in the collar at the back of my shirt and it was to be handed to STATE SECURITY OFFiCERS in South Africa,” he told the Zambia Daily-mail in the 2016 interview.

UNLOCKING DRONE OPERATION IN ZAMBIA – KNOWING THE RULES

Are you aware that there are specific laws governing drone operations in Zambia?

With the growing use of drones by both individuals and companies, it is essential to understand the procedures for drone operations in Zambia. While flying drones for personal or commercial purposes is not prohibited, it is regulated in Zambia.

To ensure that drone operations are conducted safely and responsibly, individuals and companies in Zambia operating drones must familiarise themselves with the Zambia Civil Aviation Regulations Part 18. These regulations and guidelines pertain to Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and encompass aspects like inspection, importation, registration, and special authorisation for drone operations in Zambia.

Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) means a set of configurable elements consisting of a remotely piloted aircraft, its associated remote pilot station(s), the required command and control links and any other system elements as may be required at any point during flight operation.

Here is a breakdown of what you need to know to operate drones legally in Zambia:

  1. Zambia Civil Aviation Regulations Part 18 – These regulations, which can be downloaded from the Zambia Civil Aviation website, serve as the cornerstone of drone operations in Zambia. They provide comprehensive guidance on how to conduct drone operations while adhering to the law.

Required Documents from ZCAA (Zambia Civil Aviation Authority): If you intend to operate a drone in Zambia, you must ensure you have the following documents:
a. RPAS Operator Certificate: This certificate is essential for demonstrating your compliance with the regulations and your ability to operate drones safely.
b. Operator’s Pilot License: An operator’s pilot licence further confirms your competence to operate drones in Zambia.
c. Special Authorisation for RPAS with Foreign Registration: If you plan to operate a drone with foreign registration, you must obtain special authorisation to ensure compliance with Zambian regulations.

  1. Airspace Permit from Zambia Air Force: While the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority oversees many aspects of drone operations, the Zambia Air Force is primarily concerned with ensuring the security of drone activities. To this end, drone operators are required to apply for an airspace permit from the Zambia Air Force.

Here are the steps to follow:
Fill out the airspace application form, which is available through the Zambia Air Force.
a. Include an official letter explaining the purpose of your drone operations, particularly if they are for commercial purposes.
b. Provide a map indicating the specific area where the drone operations will take place.
c. Attach the RPAS operator certificate and operator’s pilot licence obtained from the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority.
d. Include any other necessary documents as requested during the application process.

By following these guidelines and ensuring compliance with the relevant regulations, drone operators in Zambia can carry out their activities safely and legally while contributing to various sectors, including agriculture, photography, surveillance, and more. Understanding and adhering to these rules not only ensures your compliance with the law but also promotes responsible drone use, safety, and security in Zambian airspace.

Mason Greenwood could resurrect international career with Jamaica

0

Mason Greenwood could represent Jamaica in the future amid longstanding uncertainty over his international career, remaining eligible to switch allegiance from England.

More than 18 months after he was first arrested and later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour and assault, Greenwood’s club future has become a little clearer this week following Manchester United’s decision to ultimately cut ties with the 21-year-old.

The charges were dropped in February 2023 when the withdrawal of key witnesses and “new material that came to light” led the Crown Prosecution Service to no longer believe there was a realistic prospect of conviction. Greenwood was not cleared, as he himself misleadingly claimed in a statement this week, despite not being found guilty of the alleged offences in a court of law.

Manchester United then conducted their own six-month internal investigation, eventually opting to assist Greenwood in continuing his career away from the club. A permanent transfer is preferable, but the teams showing interest so far are looking more at a loan.

90min reported this week that Roma, which would mean a reunion with Jose Mourinho, are one club believed to be ready to give Greenwood a chance to kick-start his career. Atalanta have already spoken to the player about a loan, with Inter, Monaco and clubs in Germany, Turkey and Spain also taking an interest. The Saudi Pro League continues to monitor the situation as well.

For a player with 135 first-team club appearances at the age of 20 before his career was put on hold, Greenwood has almost no senior international career to speak of.

He made his debut for England in September 2020 in UEFA Nations League clash in Iceland but then ended up getting sent home in disgrace two days later when he and Phil Foden contravened quarantine regulations at the team hotel ahead of travelling on to Denmark.

The Daily Mail has reported that England boss Gareth Southgate was prepared to move on from the Iceland incident when he met with Greenwood, members of the player’s family and Manchester United officials in the autumn of 2021. Southgate is noted for his second chance culture for young players provided they show ‘good intentions’, with the meeting also said to present to Greenwood a plan for him to be reintegrated as an England squad player, rather than a starter.

Greenwood ultimately wasn’t selected at that time and it is hinted there was dissatisfaction from his camp over the attention from being called up but potentially not playing. Prior to that, Greenwood had been named in a provisional squad for Euro 2020 but withdrew due to an unspecified injury.

It is said that Southgate was still looking to reintegrate Greenwood as 2022 began, with an eye ultimately on the World Cup, but the arrest and subsequent charges stopped that in its tracks.

As of right now, Greenwood hasn’t played a professional game since 22 January 2022, nor has he trained in a professional club environment throughout his suspension by Manchester United.

Were he to resurrect his career, and with it an international future, the Mail adds that Greenwood may not return to action for England at all. Instead, he could choose to represent Jamaica, qualifying through his family. There has been interest from the Jamaica Football Federation since 2021 and Greenwood has even been recently pictured wearing a Jamaican team tracksuit.

FIFA rules regarding international eligibility would allow Greenwood to switch allegiance. Although previous regulations meant that players were locked in for a particular nation once they had featured in a competitive senior international game, a 2020 update means that players are now able to switch allegiance as long as they have played no more than three competitive games at senior international level before turning 21. Greenwood was 18 at the time of his sole England appearance.

Olympic champion Caster Semenya ‘not ashamed of being different’

Two-time Olympic champion Caster Semenya says she is “not going to be ashamed” of being “different”, and will “fight for what is right” amid her ongoing dispute with athletics authorities.

Semenya, 32, was born with differences of sexual development (DSD) which mean she has an elevated level of testosterone – a hormone that increases muscle mass and strength.

The South African cannot compete in female track events without taking testosterone-reducing drugs.

Semenya said recently she was turning her attention to “winning battles against the authorities” rather than collecting medals, with competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics no longer a goal.

She said it was about “fighting for the upcoming generation because there are a lot of kids affected by the same ruling”.

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent, Semenya says:

‘I will embrace my differences’

Under regulations introduced in 2018, athletes with DSD were only allowed to compete in female track events between 400m and the mile if they reduced their testosterone levels.

In March, World Athletics ruled that DSD athletes must now have hormone-suppressing treatment for six months before being eligible to compete in all female events.

“For me I believe if you are a woman, you are a woman,” said Semenya, who won Olympic 800m gold in 2012 and 2016 and is a three-time world champion over the same distance.

“No matter the differences you have. I have realised I want to live my life and fight for what I think and I believe in myself.

“I know I am a woman and anything that comes along with it just accept it.”

Semenya ran in the 5,000m at last year’s World Championships in Oregon but failed to qualify for the final.

In July, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled in her favour in a case related to testosterone levels in female athletes.

“At the end of the day, I know I am different. I don’t care about the medical terms or what they tell me. Being born without a uterus or with internal testicles. Those don’t make me less of a woman,” added Semenya.

“Those are the differences I was born with and I will embrace them. I am not going to be ashamed because I am different. I am different and special and I feel great about it.

“It comes with why we fight for women’s sport. The importance of women’s sport is not being taken seriously and we need to take charge of our own bodies. Decide what is right for us. Not another gender deciding what we should look like.

“If we are woman enough or not, it is up to us. We know and believe in what is right, then why must we stop.”

The case at the ECHR was not against sporting bodies or DSD rules – but specifically against the government of Switzerland for not protecting Semenya’s rights and dates back to a Swiss Supreme Court ruling three years ago.

The ECHR found the Swiss government did not protect Semenya from being discriminated against when its Supreme Court refused to overturn a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), which upheld the World Athletics rules.

The case has now been referred to the Grand Chamber of the ECHR for a final ruling following a referral request from the Swiss government.

‘I am not going to be somebody I am not’

Semenya has argued that taking testosterone-reducing medication could endanger her health and that the ruling denied her and other athletes with DSD the right to rely on their natural abilities.

She told BBC Breakfast that she knew she was “different” from the age of five but, in her autobiography The Race To Be Myself, revealed she found out she “did not have a uterus or fallopian tubes” at the same time as “the rest of the world” after a gender test in 2009.

She says she has “nothing to hide”, adding: “I am a woman and have a vagina just like any other woman.

“I am living a different life and I will continue living that, as that is what makes me feel good. I am not going to be somebody I am not, as I have to fit in to be accepted.”

Last week, Semenya said she had achieved all she ever wanted on the track, and now wants to “pave the way and make sure each and every young girl is treated well”.

“My future is to fight injustice, fight for inclusivity and diversity,” she said.

“For me, I’m not going to allow leaders who come for the selfish means into our business to destroy it. I’m about empowering women and making sure they have a voice.

“At the moment, I don’t see a lot of women voicing out if they have problems or something to say. Each and every woman out there should fight for their own. I’ll always fight for what is right, I know what is right, I know how things are supposed to be done. Let’s wake up as women and fight for what is right.”

She added: “[Sporting leaders] are turning women against women. If you say you’re acting in the best interests of athletes, then do that. It’s not up to you to decide what gender should look like, what sex should look like. Govern, make money, promote sport. Very clear message and very loud – do the job, promote the sport and let us sports people entertain.”

Last week, World Athletics said in a statement to Reuters: “World Athletics has only ever been interested in protecting the female category. If we don’t, then women and young girls will not choose sport. That is, and has always been, the federation’s sole motivation.”

A spokesperson told the BBC: “World Athletics has 15 years of data, observations and information directly from DSD athletes in our own sport that show high testosterone levels do provide an unfair advantage in the female category – and that our guidelines on testosterone thresholds are necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in our aim to protect the integrity of the female category.”

CCC hoping to benefit from alleged rift between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga

Zimbabwe’s main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is seemingly banking on the alleged succession conflict between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga for it to grab power.

CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi on Tuesday made sensational claims that Mnangagwa and Chiwenga are engaged in a succession dispute in which the former allegedly wants to extend his presidential term limit.

Mkwananzi further insinuated that Chiwenga and his alleged faction from Zanu-PF structures and the military want to block Mnangagwa’s move.

This, according to the prominent activist, “threatens to splinter the liberation movement into irreconcilable and irreparable pieces”.

At this point, Mkwananzi said, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa will emerge to unite the nation.

“An implosion is pending in Zanu-PF. On the one hand, there is Mnangagwa and his extrajudicial groupings such as FAZ, Lacoste and close family, friends and kinsmen.

“On the other hand there is the General and his groupings namely the military, Zanu-PF structures and others. The battle is centred around ensuring that: Mnangagwa doesn’t get a 3rd term

“That if he leaves office as he is now due to, he doesn’t impose a successor but give way to his Deputy Chiwenga,” Mkwananzi said.

He added: “Both leaders are under immense pressure from their supporters and kinsmen. Chiwenga realises he made a mistake by handing power to Mnangagwa while Mnangagwa sees an opportunity to extend his rule or at least retain the throne among his kinsmen.

“The ethnical dynamic threatens to splinter the liberation movement into irreconcilable and irreparable pieces.

“In the midst of this melee, President Nelson Chamisa remains patient, focused and the only standing national leader that will unite the nation beyond enthical or any other divisionist considerations.”

But investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono told Mkwananzi that he was now dancing in Zanu-PF’s hands.

He added that this was the same propaganda that was fed to Chamisa before August 23 harmonised general elections.

“This is the propaganda that Zanu-PF and the system wants you to believe chief. The same propaganda that was fed to Nelson Chamisa and his advisors that the army was going to make sure that he will become President after August 23 if he wins.

“Don’t believe this counterintelligence propaganda Chief. It is meant to manage you into believing that something is about to happen so that you rest on your laurels,” Chin’ono said.

He added that when Mnangagwa assumed power in a military coup which ousted late former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017, the opposition was used and dumped in the process.

“We have heard these stories since we were kids, and when Zanu-PF had internal contradictions in 2017, it solved them using the opposition and dumped it,” he said.

Chamusa lost the 2023 presidential race with 44% against Mnangagwa’s 52,6%. The plebiscite was discredited by the international observers including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) due to irregularities.

SADC concluded the plebiscite fell short of the requirements of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

CCC In A Quandary As High Court Dismisses Challenge To Recalls
On Saturday, the High Court threw out the application by CCC legislators challenging their recall. Last month, Tshabangu recalled 15 MPs, nine senators and 17 councillors, citing that they are no longer CCC members.

In dismissing the MPs’ challenge, Justice Munamato Mutevedzi ruled that the applicants had failed to provide the CCC constitution,

“…or any document which showed that Sengezo Tshabangu could possibly not have held the position he claimed he held. It was simply their word that he wasn’t (interim secretary general). That is not enough… The onus to prove entitlement to the declaratory orders sought was on the applicants. They did not even begin to discharge it. They have not established their case on a balance of probabilities as required by law and are therefore not entitled to the declaratur they seek.”

Tshabangu Reveals CCC MPs Are Begging Him Not To Recall Them

Speaking after the court judgement, Sengezo Tshabangu said CCC sitting MPS are scurrying to him for mercy:

“They are actually calling me every hour, every minute that, ‘SG, please don’t recall us. We will take whatever you say, and we are prepared to work with you.’ So I didn’t sleep last night because members of Parliament were reaching out. And I promised them that look, as long as you know that you are in that position elected by the people, you are safe. If you know that you paid people for you to get into that position, unfortunately, my office is going to visit you.”

He also threatened to reshuffle the lawmakers in Parliament:

“We are going to reshuffle the setup in Parliament. We are going to have a fresh caucus and we are going to have a reshuffle because those people positioned themselves there without broader consultation of the movement. Things are going to change. We can’t disengage. We can’t create a constitutional crisis unnecessarily. So if there are any problems, we will discuss them with the members of Parliament. We will whip them into line. We will consult them.”

“Donald Trump leads in five critical States against incumbent Biden”-Times/Siena Opinion Poll

0

President Joe Biden is trailing Donald J. Trump in five of the six most important battleground states one year before the 2024 election, suffering from enormous doubts about his age and deep dissatisfaction over his handling of the economy and a host of other issues, new polls by The New York Times and Siena College have found.

The results show Mr. Biden losing to Mr. Trump, his likeliest Republican rival, by margins of four to 10 percentage points among registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

Biden is ahead only in Wisconsin, by two percentage points, the poll found.

Based on New York Times/Siena College polls of 3,662 registered voters from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3By Ashley Wu and Molly Cook Escobar.

Across the six battlegrounds — all of which Mr. Biden carried in 2020 — the president trails by an average of 48 to 44 percent.

Discontent pulsates throughout the Times/Siena poll, with a majority of voters saying Biden’s policies have personally hurt them.

The survey also reveals the extent to which the multiracial and multigenerational coalition that elected Mr. Biden is fraying.

Demographic groups that backed Biden by landslide margins in 2020 are now far more closely contested, as two-thirds of the electorate sees the country moving in the wrong direction.

Voters under 30 favor Biden by only a single percentage point, his lead among Hispanic voters is down to single digits and his advantage in urban areas is half of Trump’s edge in rural regions.

And while women still favored Biden, men preferred Mr. Trump by twice as large a margin, reversing the gender advantage that had fueled so many Democratic gains in recent years.

Black voters — long a bulwark for Democrats and Biden — are now registering 22 percent support in these states for Mr. Trump, a level unseen in presidential politics for a Republican in modern times.

Add it all together, and Trump leads by 10 points in Nevada, six in Georgia, five in Arizona, five in Michigan, and four in Pennsylvania. Biden held a 2-point edge in Wisconsin.

In a remarkable sign of a gradual racial realignment between the two parties, the more diverse the swing state, the farther Mr. Biden was behind, and he led only in the whitest of the six.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump are both deeply — and similarly — unpopular, according to the poll. But voters who overwhelmingly said the nation was on the wrong track are taking out their frustrations on the president.

“The world is falling apart under Biden,” said Spencer Weiss, a 53-year-old electrical substation specialist in Bloomsburg, Pa., who supported Mr. Biden in 2020 but is now backing Mr. Trump, albeit with some reservations. “I would much rather see somebody that I feel can be a positive role model leader for the country. But at least I think Trump has his wits about him.”

Mr. Biden still has a year to turn the situation around. Economic indicators are up even if voters do not agree with them. Mr. Trump remains polarizing. And Mr. Biden’s well-funded campaign will aim to shore up his demographic weak spots. The president’s advisers have repeatedly noted that Democrats successfully limited the party’s losses in 2022 despite Mr. Biden’s poor approval ratings at the time.

Still, the survey shows how Mr. Biden begins the next year at a deficit even though Mr. Trump has been indicted on criminal charges four times and faces trial in 2024.

If the results in the poll were the same next November, Mr. Trump would be poised to win more than 300 Electoral College votes, far above the 270 needed to take the White House.

Another ominous sign for Democrats is that voters across all income levels felt that Mr. Biden’s policies had hurt them personally, while they credited Mr. Trump’s policies for helping them.

The results were mirror opposites: Voters gave Mr. Trump a 17-point advantage for having helped them and Mr. Biden an 18-point disadvantage for having hurt them.

For Mr. Biden, who turns 81 later this month, being the oldest president in American history stands out as a glaring liability. An overwhelming 71 percent said he was “too old” to be an effective president — an opinion shared across every demographic and geographic group in the poll, including a remarkable 54 percent of Mr. Biden’s supporters.

In contrast, only 19 percent of supporters of Mr. Trump, who is 77, viewed him as too old, and 39 percent of the electorate overall.

Concerns about the president’s advancing age and mental acuity — 62 percent also said Mr. Biden does not have the “mental sharpness” to be effective — are just the start of a sweeping set of Biden weaknesses in the survey results.

“I don’t think he’s the right guy to go toe to toe with these other world leaders that don’t respect him or fear him,” Travis Waterman, 33, said of Mr. Biden.Credit…Caitlin O’Hara for The New York Times.

Voters, by a 59 percent to 37 percent margin, said they better trusted Mr. Trump over Mr. Biden on the economy, the largest gap of any issue.

The preference for Mr. Trump on economic matters spanned the electorate, among both men and women, those with college degrees and those without them, every age range and every income level.

That result is especially problematic for Mr. Biden because nearly twice as many voters said economic issues would determine their 2024 vote compared with social issues, such as abortion or guns. And those economic voters favored Mr. Trump by a landslide 60 percent to 32 percent.

The findings come after Mr. Biden’s campaign has run millions of dollars in ads promoting his record, and as the president continues to tour the country to brag about the state of the economy. “Folks, Bidenomics is just another way of saying the American dream!” Mr. Biden declared on Wednesday on a trip to Minnesota.

Voters disagree. Only 2 percent of voters said the economy was excellent.

Voters under 30 — a group that strongly voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 — said they trusted Mr. Trump more on the economy by an extraordinary 28 percentage-point margin after years of inflation and now high-interest rates that have made mortgages far less affordable.

Less than one percent of poll respondents under 30 rated the current economy as excellent, including zero poll respondents in that age group in three states: Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin.

“I had high hopes for Biden,” said Jahmerry Henry, a 25-year-old who packages liquor in Albany, Ga. “You can’t be worse than Trump. But then as the years go by, things happen with inflation, the war going on in Ukraine, recently Israel and I guess our borders are not secure at all.”

Now Mr. Henry plans to back Mr. Trump.

“I don’t see anything that he has done to benefit us,” said Patricia Flores, 39, of Reno, Nev., who voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 but won’t support him again in 2024.

In 2020, Mr. Biden’s path to victory had been rebuilding the so-called blue wall in the Rust Belt states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and then expanding the map in the diversifying Sun Belt states of Arizona and Georgia.

The poll shows that Mr. Biden is notably stronger in the industrial northern states than in the more diverse Sun Belt.

And his vulnerabilities stretch across an expansive set of issues.

Voters preferred Mr. Trump over Mr. Biden on immigration by 12 points, on national security, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by 11 points. And though a 58 percent majority supported more economic and military aid to Ukraine — which aligns with Mr. Biden’s policy — that did not seem to benefit the president on broader questions of fitness to handle foreign affairs.

“I don’t think he’s the right guy to go toe to toe with these other world leaders that don’t respect him or fear him,” said Travis Waterman, 33, who worked in home restoration in Phoenix. He voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 but sees him as “weak” now and prefers Mr. Trump.

The gender gap in national security was enormous. Men preferred Mr. Trump 62 percent to 33 percent; women preferred Mr. Biden 47 to 46 percent.

Mr. Biden’s strongest issue was abortion, where voters trusted him over Mr. Trump by nine percentage points. Mr. Biden also maintained the trust of voters by an even slimmer margin of three points over Mr. Trump on the more amorphous handling of “democracy.”

Mr. Biden has survived poor showings in polls before. In fact, in October 2022 in the run-up to the midterm elections, the president’s job approval rating was nearly the same as it is now. His party still managed to lose fewer seats than expected in the House and gained one seat in the Senate, in part by painting Republican candidates as extremists.

Today, the degree to which voters are turned off by Mr. Trump’s personality and bombast — which has been the glue helping keep together a fractious Democratic coalition for years — appears to have waned.

Only 46 percent of voters said Mr. Biden had the proper temperament to be president, barely higher than the 43 percent who said the same of Mr. Trump. That said, Mr. Trump will be more in the spotlight in 2024, including his criminal trials, a growing presence that could remind voters why they were repelled by him in the first place.

The New York Times/Siena College polls of 3,662 registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin were conducted by telephone using live operators from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3, 2023. When all states are combined, the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 1.8 percentage points.

The margin of sampling error for each state is between 4.4 and 4.8 percentage points.

SADC fails to signal military deployment to DR Congo

Leaders of the Southern Africa Development Cooperation (SADC) bloc on Saturday failed to signal definite deployment of troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving it open for further assessment.

Instead, they spoke of providing “strategic guidance on the deployment” of what is to be known as the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) meant to restore peace and security in the country, one of its member states.

The gathering of the bloc in Luanda, Angola, had signaled a high-level concern for the DRC, which is heading into elections next month amid renewed violence in eastern parts of the country.

And while the leaders said more member states have committed resources towards actual deployment of the mission, no specific timelines were given.

The leaders, instead, “expressed concern at the deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the eastern DRC and the reported resumption of attacks and occupation of territory by the M23, in clear violation of the ceasefire.”

Angolan President Joao Lorenco, also the AU mediator for the Great Lakes region, had helped broker a ceasefire between Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and the M23, the biggest rebel group in eastern DRC.

Part of that deal, known as the Luanda Process, was meant to see M23 withdraw from territories in exchange for cantonment and gradual inclusion in a political dialogue.

Essentially, that was to also help end animosity between Rwanda and DRC who have accused one another of supporting troublesome rebel groups against each other.

And if that was to hold, it could support a political dialogue between armed groups and the government known as the Nairobi process, mediated by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

But recent violence has sort of reversed the gear, the reason SADC leaders were meeting.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, in attendance on Saturday, had been pushing SADC to deploy troops at least to rout out M23 which he considers terrorists. SADC had earlier pledged 500 troops but made no indication on when actual deployment was to happen.

Ahead of elections, the UN said Friday that in October alone, more than 300,000 people were driven from their homes by escalating violence in North Kivu Province bringing the total number of people displaced in eastern parts of the country to more than 6 million.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), this year’s $2.3 billion Humanitarian Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently only 36 percent funded, with just two months left in the year.

The reported resumption of attacks and occupation of territory by the M23, in clear violation of the Cease Fire was also an issue of discussions during the Extra-Ordinary Summit held in Luanda Saturday, a gathering aimed at finding a lasting solution to the security challenges in the Eastern DRC.

The DRC will hold elections in December, but Tshisekedi has been at odds with the East African Community Regional Force which deployed a year ago in eastern parts of the country. It will now be forced to leave by December 8.

“[The] Summit reiterated the need for SADC to spearhead efforts towards mobilisation of resources for facilitating peace and security in the SADC Region. These efforts include reviving discussions to establish and operationalise the SADC Peace Fund and engaging International Cooperating Partners.

The summit hosted by President Lourenço, was also attended by Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Eswatini sent senior government officials envoys.

Israel-Hamas conflict has revealed fissures in South Africa

The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has revealed strong divisions in South Africa. The government’s unwavering support for the Palestinians has faced criticism, particularly from leaders of the Jewish community and others in the country.

The government said that its diplomats are leaving Israel and they think the job of Israel’s ambassador in Pretoria is becoming impossible.

The Jewish Board of Deputies in the country has strongly criticized this and wants to have a quick meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

People in South Africa have been supportive of the Palestinians’ struggle for their own country. This support started during the time of Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid.

In 1997, after becoming the first democratically elected president of the country following a long fight against white-minority rule, he said: “We understand very well that our freedom is not complete unless Palestinians also have their freedom. ”

The Hamas attack on Israel was very serious and killed about 1,400 people. Despite this, the ruling party of South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC), has not changed its stance. Even though two South African citizens were killed and another is being held hostage, the ANC’s position remains the same.

President Ramaphosa promised that the ANC stands with the Palestinians and sees similarities in their history to South Africa’s fight against apartheid.

Even though he criticized the Hamas attack, a week later he joined 60 other party leaders in waving Palestinian flags and wearing the black and white Palestinian scarf called keffiyeh.

“He said that the Palestinians have been living under someone else’s control for nearly 75 years. ” They have been waiting and fighting against a government that has been called an unfair state.

“We always promised to support each other, and we always believed that the best way to solve the problems, especially relating to Palestine, is by having two separate states. ”

South Africa’s foreign ministry is saying that the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip could be considered as a genocide. The strikes have resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor accused Israel of punishing all Palestinian civilians, but Israel disagrees.

The government hasn’t said anything about the person from South Africa who was taken hostage, and they haven’t told us their name either.

The country’s Jewish Board of Deputies, the South African Zionist Federation, and the Democratic Alliance (DA), the largest opposition party, have criticized its support for Palestine.

Some radio stations in South Africa are purposely reducing the time for taking calls from listeners who want to discuss the war between Israel and Hamas due to strong opinions on both sides.

Big marches supporting the rights of Palestinians have taken place in South Africa during the ongoing conflict.

There were smaller marches and rallies supporting Israel in Johannesburg and Cape Town. On the previous Friday, people from the Jewish community put up 221 large red balloons on Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg. They wanted to raise awareness about Israeli captives and ask for their freedom.

Gabriella Farber, a member of the ANC, quit the party because she believed it was endorsing Hamas.

She wrote a letter on X (formerly Twitter) saying that she understood she could not be a proud Jew and belong to the ANC, even if she tried.

“The ANC took nine days to criticize Hamas for the terrible acts they did to the Jewish people. ” She said that when the ANC criticized Hamas, they also said that Israel is committing a genocide.

Warren Goldstein, the chief rabbi of The Union of Orthodox Synagogues of South Africa, has heavily criticized the government’s position.

“I want to say to the president and the ANC that you do not represent South Africa,” he said at a SA Zionist Federation rally supporting Israel.

This president, his party, and government are backing a very cruel and savage act which has greatly upset good people worldwide. How could they do that.

But the Jewish community in South Africa, estimated to be about 65,000 people, does not all agree in criticizing the government’s backing of the Palestinians.

Jonathan Shapiro, a cartoonist who has won awards, describes himself as a non-religious Jewish person. He believes it is worth noting that many important members of the ANC, who fought against apartheid, were Jewish and did not support Israel.

“I believe that Farber is not aware of the fact that many important Jewish heroes in the fight against apartheid were strongly opposed to the Israel colonial project,” said Shapiro, who is also known as Zapiro, in an interview with the BBC.

He said that ANC leaders like Joe Slovo, Arthur Goldreich, Rusty Bernstein, Ronnie Kasrils, and Amy Thornton have a history of being socialists or communists, or generally being people who fight for justice in various struggles.

He said that Ms. Farber could not act like the ANC didn’t have any opinion on the situation in Palestine.

During the fight against white minority rule, the ANC became friends with leaders like Fidel Castro from Cuba, Muammar Gaddafi from Libya, and Yasser Arafat from the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO).

They all supported and helped each other with physical materials or emotional encouragement and viewed each other as similar movements for liberation.

Arafat was one of the first leaders Mandela got to know after getting out of prison on 11 February 1990.

The former PLO leader was part of a group of leaders from nearby countries in South Africa who worked together to fight against apartheid. They met Mandela in Zambia only two weeks after he was released from being in prison for 27 years.

Even though Mandela didn’t ask for anything specific before the meeting, Arafat had already accepted that Israel has the right to exist. A few years later, he also signed the Oslo Accords. Under these circumstances, the PLO agreed that Israel has the right to exist and stopped using terrorism as a means of achieving its goals. In return, steps were taken to establish Palestinian self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Foreign Minister Pandor is facing criticism for talking on the phone with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh shortly after the attack on 7 October.

Ms Pandor ignored the criticism and said to the national broadcaster SABC that the ANC learned from their experience of fighting the apartheid government that the only way to resolve a conflict is by talking to the people who oppose you.

South Africa is committed to finding answers and encouraging harmony. When the leaders of Hamas wanted to talk to me, I said yes and told them that South Africa wants peace. It’s my job to do this.

“When the apartheid state wanted to communicate with our leaders, we didn’t say: ‘They have been causing us harm, they have incarcerated our fathers and grandfathers. ‘ Instead, we opted to say: ‘Let’s have a conversation. ‘ This represents the nature of South Africans,” she explained.

Mr Ramaphosa, who was involved in obtaining a peace agreement in Northern Ireland, believes that South Africa is prepared to assist in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They can use their knowledge and skills in resolving conflicts to help find a resolution.

But, the Jewish Board of Deputies in South Africa says if they were to kick out Israel’s ambassador, it would go against what the government claims it believes in, which is talking to both sides of the conflict.
