Man Jailed for Beating Wife Over ‘Toilet Love Affair’—Zambian Style!

Man Jailed for Beating Wife Over ‘Toilet Love Affair’—Zambian Style!

A Zambian drama of epic proportions unfolded this week in Nakonde, as a 33-year-old man, Davies Mwamulima, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor for beating his wife, Happiness Nanyinza, over what some are calling the “toilet love affair” of the year.

The situation turned into a comedy of errors when Mwamulima found his 25-year-old wife allegedly with another man—inside the toilet. Yes, you read that right. Who knew the toilet was the new “dating spot” in Nakonde? Forget candlelit dinners; it’s all about those bathroom rendezvous, apparently.

Mwamulima, who was clearly under the impression that a slap was all it took to “set things right,” defended himself in court by saying, “I slapped her like any responsible husband would do when he finds his wife misbehaving.” He even suggested he was just “teaching her a lesson”—a classic Zambian approach of thinking you can sort out problems with a quick smack and a long explanation. Sure, no worries, just another day in Zed marriage!

In what can only be described as a court session worthy of a Zambian sitcom, Mwamulima admitted to his crime but with the audacity of someone who still thought the “slap and talk it out” method was a winning strategy. “I didn’t know it would land me in jail,” he said. “I just thought it was a quick slap and we move on like nothing happened. What’s the worst that could happen?”

Well, the worst that could happen, as it turns out, is your own mother testifying against you. Yes, Mwamulima’s mother took to the stand, telling the court she had warned her son, “Don’t beat the girl! What if you break her? Mwilaba luba! (You’ll be in trouble!)” But alas, like many Zambian mothers, she was overruled by her son’s very unique understanding of marriage dynamics.

The magistrate, the ever-sharp Faith Mkandawire, didn’t let the situation slide. With the kind of Zambian sass we all love, she said, “This isn’t a traditional mulilo (fire), where you just go around throwing slaps and hoping the smoke clears. No! If your wife is in the toilet with another man, ask questions first! Maybe knock before you start doing swing swings around the house.”

The room erupted in laughter as the magistrate continued, “You can’t just slap your way through life, my friend! Hard labor is waiting for you, and I hope you learn the real meaning of patience and communication.”

As Mwamulima’s sentence was handed down, the crowd whispered, “Pantu ifyo mwalanda kuli toilet, it’s better to just put your house in order before things turn into soap opera.” Translation: Fix your home before it becomes a drama show.

Meanwhile, Happiness Nanyinza, still recovering from the incident, has gained a new fan base. Some of her friends have started the “Save the Toilets” movement, promising to raise funds to build more public toilets to prevent future confrontations.

In the end, Mwamulima learned the hard way that in Zambia, sometimes the only thing you should slap is a fanta bottle in the fridge, not your wife. The rest of us, meanwhile, are just trying to figure out if there’s some new “Zambian toilet etiquette” we missed out on. Maybe next time, Mwamulima—knock before you go in.

DR CONGO REBELS VOW TO MARCH ALL THE WAY TO CAPITAL

DR CONGO REBELS VOW TO MARCH ALL THE WAY TO CAPITAL

The rebel leader whose fighters have captured Goma, the biggest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has vowed to continue their offensive all the way to the capital, Kinshasa.

Corneille Nangaa, who heads an alliance of rebel groups that includes the M23, said their ultimate aim was to topple President Félix Tshisekedi’s government.

Unconfirmed reports say the Rwanda-backed rebels are currently advancing towards Bukavu, the second-biggest city in the mineral-rich east, despite international calls for a ceasefire.

In a televised address after the fall of Goma, Tshisekedi said a “vigorous and coordinated response” was under way to recapture territory from the rebels.

“Be sure of one thing: the Democratic Republic of Congo will not let itself be humiliated or crushed. We will fight and we will triumph,” he said on Wednesday evening.

The fighting has forced about 500,000 people from their homes, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.

On Thursday, Nangaa presented the rebels as the new administrators of Goma, telling journalists they were there to stay and would get services up and running again.

Since fighting escalated last week, electricity and water supplies in the city have been cut off, and food is scarce.

“We will continue the march of liberation all the way to Kinshasa,” Nangaa added.

Analysts say such an offensive would be unlikely given the vast size of the country – Kinshasa is 2,600km (1,600 miles) away. However, it did happen in 1997, when Rwanda-backed forces ousted long-time leader Mobutu Sese Seko.

Nangaa’s comments will increase anger in Kinshasa, which has accused neighbouring Rwanda of backing the rebels, and even having its troops in Goma.

Rwanda is also facing a chorus of international criticism, despite its denials of direct military support.

M23 – the main rebel group in the alliance – is led by ethnic Tutsis, and says it took up arms to protect the rights of the minority group in DR Congo.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is also a Tutsi, and accuses DR Congo’s government of harbouring Hutu militias who were involved in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. (BBC News)

DR CONGO’S FAILED GAMBLE ON ROMANIAN MERCENARIES

DR CONGO’S FAILED GAMBLE ON ROMANIAN MERCENARIES

It has been a humiliating week for nearly 300 Romanian mercenaries recruited to fight on the side of the army in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Their surrender following a rebel assault on the eastern city of Goma has also shattered the dreams of those who signed up for the job to earn big money.

The BBC has seen contracts that show that these hired soldiers were being paid around $5,000 (£4,000) a month, while regular military recruits get around $100, or sometimes go unpaid.

The Romanians were contracted to help the army fight the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, who say they are fighting to protect the rights of DR Congo’s minority ethnic Tutsis.

When the offensive on Goma started on Sunday night, the Romanians were forced to take refuge at a UN peacekeeping base.

“The M23 rebels were supported by troops and state-of-the-art military equipment from Rwanda and managed to reach our positions around the city of Goma,” Constantin Timofti, described as a co-ordinator for the group, told Romanian TVR channel on Monday.

“The national army gave up fighting and we were forced to withdraw.”

Romania’s foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Țărnea told the BBC that “complex” negotiations followed, which saw the M23 hand over the Romanian fighters – whom he described as private employees of the DR Congo government on an army training mission – to Rwanda.

Goma sits right on the border with Rwanda – and the mercenaries were filmed by journalists as they crossed over, surrendering to body searches and other checks.

Before they crossed over, phone footage shows M23 commander Willy Ngoma berating one of the Romanians in French, telling him to sit on the ground, cross his legs and put his hands over his head.

He asked him about his military training – it was with the French Foreign Legion, the Romanian replied.

“They recruited you with a salary of $8,000 a month, you eat well,” Ngoma yelled, pointing out the disparity between that and a Congolese army recruit’s pay.

“We are fighting for our future. Do not come for adventure here,” he warned.

It is not clear where Ngoma got the $8,000 figure, but the contract shown to the BBC by a former Romanian mercenary in October detailed that “strictly confidential remuneration” for senior personnel started at $5,000 per month during active duty and $3,000 during periods of leave.

The agreement outlines an “indefinite period” of service, with contractors scheduled to take a one-month break after every three months of deployment.

I had met the ex-mercenary in Romania’s capital, Bucharest, where I had gone to investigate Asociatia RALF, which a group of UN experts say is a Romanian enterprise with “ex-Romanians from the French Foreign Legion”.

It is headed by Horațiu Potra, a Romanian who describes himself as a military instructor.

In June while in Goma, I had noticed such mercenaries at checkpoints and deployed around the city, working closely with army.

Over the last three years, others have reported seeing them driving Congolese troops in army vehicles.

“When they arrived, everyone referred to them as Russian,” Fiston Mahamba, co-founder of disinformation group Check Congo, told the BBC.

“I think this was linked to the Russian mercenary group, Wagner with presence in several African countries.”

In fact, Asociatia RALF may also work across Africa – its contract stipulated that it had various “operational locations”, including “Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Guinea”.

The UN experts say that two private military companies were brought on board to bolster its forces in 2022, not long after the M23 had regrouped and begun capturing territory in North Kivu.

The province has been unstable for decades with numerous militias operating there making money from its minerals like gold and coltan – used to make batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones.

The first firm that was signed up was Agemira RDC, headed by Olivier Bazin, a French-Congolese national. The experts say the company employed Bulgarian, Belarusian, Georgian, Algerian, French and Congolese nationals. [BBC News]

Cardi B Gives Firm Response To Pregnancy Rumor

Cardi B has informed her fans that she’s not pregnant yet after sparking rumors about expecting another child with her outfit choice for a shopping trip to Benny The Jeweler.

Stepping outside, she rocked a “school girl” skirt, something she’d previously labeled one of her go-to pregnancy outfits. “I’m so happy y’all know I’m [pregnant],” she posted on X (formerly Twitter), last August. “Now I can stop wearing those deum school girl skirts lmaoooooo.”

As one of Cardi’s fan pages posted a clip featuring the outfit, fans ran wild with theories in the replies. “Here she go with these school girl skirts. You pregnant again,” one fan noted. Another added, “Not the pregnant skirt again.” When one fan asked her directly whether she’s pregnant, she replied “Not yet.”

In other news, Cardi recently made headlines for her antics on social media by calling out her estranged husband, Offset, as well as his mother for allegedly robbing her. “I ain’t listen after you and your momma robbed me. Yeah, you and your mom robbed me cold, right under my nose,” she alleged, per Billboard. “Where are the Christmas gifts at?”

She also demanded he sign the divorce papers. As the comments circulated online, Cardi later explained herself, saying on X Spaces: “Yes, I crashed the fck out and I don’t give a fck. That’s just how I am. Sometimes people got to crash out to release stress. People act like being nonchalant is the way to go. While being nonchalant looks better, it doesn’t always make you feel better.”

Looking ahead, Cardi has previously teased finally releasing her long-awaited sophomore album in 2025. “I got something very important to me that is coming out next year. I don’t want to say too much,” she wrote on social media. “This is something that I been wanting to do for a very long time. I just left a billion-dollar play.”

EMMANUEL MWAMBA SUBMITS A CASE OF TORTURE, BRUTALITY, HARRASMENT AND MALICIOUS PROSECUTIONS TO THE UNHRC SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR

EMMANUEL MWAMBA SUBMITS A CASE OF TORTURE, BRUTALITY, HARRASMENT AND MALICIOUS PROSECUTIONS TO THE UNHRC SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR

Opposition Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee and Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba has submitted a strong case of torture, police brutality, harrasment and malicious prosecutions made against himself by the UPND Government.

Mwamba, who is also a presidential candidate, has accused the Zambia Police of torturing and subjecting him to ill treatment that saw him lose a tooth, suffer bodily injuries at the hands of police officers.

He has also directly accused State House of perpetrating cyber attacks, hate speech and cyber bullying against himself on established rogue online newspapers run by State House media.

He said State House officials publish fabricated malicious reports, defamatory articles and hate speech to attempt to destroy his name and systematically incite violence against him thereby suffering threats on his life from the State organs and UPND cadres.

He says many victims of these online cyber attacks cannot seek justice as the online newspapers are sheltered at State House.

He says past calls to President Hakainde Hichilema to shut these scandal sheets have fallen on deaf ears, making him an active accomplice to the smear and dirty campaigns carried out against his political opponents and published by these rogue media platforms.
Below is the letter that Mwamba has submitted.

SUBJECT: LETTER OF COMPLAINT ON TORTURE, INHUMAN TREATMENT, HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES AND ABUSE OF DUE PROCESS AND MALICIOUS PROSECUTION -MYSELF

Prepared for; Ms. Irene Khan,
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression
Report on Violations of Freedom of Opinion and Expression in Zambia the case of Emmanuel Mwamba. This Report highlights the violations of the rights to Freedom of Opinion and Expression in Zambia as guaranteed under Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Zambia is party to and the Zambian Constitution, Bill of Rights
The violations outlined reflect a pattern of systematic restrictions free speech and right to hold opinions
Submitted by; Emmanuel Mwamba.

Introduction; I’m Emmanuel Mwamba. I have had a great opportunity to serve my country as a Permanent Secretary in various government departments and also served as a senior diplomat.
Since 2015, I have served as Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa. I have also served as Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
Since my return from the diplomatic tour of duty, I joined active politics and I’m one of the presidential candidates for the primary elections that are expected to take place in our party, a process which will pick an official presidential aspirant.
I’m currently a member of the Central Committee of the Opposition, Patriotic Front Party (PF)and the Chairperson of Information and Publicity.
As many members of the Opposition would have submitted to you, I’m also a victim of police brutality, arbitrary arrest and violation of my freedom of expression and right to hold opinion.
I will cite three cases (3);
1. On June 14th 2023, I was ambushed and abducted by persons that later identified themselves as police officers. I was accosted at a car wash on Mosi-O-Tunya road in Woodlands residential area by 12 people driving 3 cars. They brutally treated and manhandled me, bundled me in a car and drove me away. They claimed they were police officers but did not produce any Identity cards. They were not in police cars but private cars. My family and lawyers could not access me for almost twenty-four hours. They alleged that they were investigating a case of forgery of alleged correspondence between state institutions. The case for which they were investigating me has never been taken to court two years on.
Medical records issued by the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) showed that I lost a tooth, I suffered serious bruises and injuries on my shoulder, neck and jaw.
To cover their criminal brutality against me, the Police charged me with an offence of assaulting a police officer which I’m being prosecuted in the Lusaka Magistrate Court.

I reported the matter of assault against me at Woodlands Police Station against the Police Officers that assaulted me. The Police have never pursued or processed my complaint. Despite tendering medical records and sworn statements.

I laid a complaint to the Police and Public Complaints Commission against the 3 police officers who were leading the attack. They are from Zambia Police Service Headquarters Criminal Investigations Department (CID.

I reported the matter to the Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC). Equally, the HRC has failed to investigate and respond to my complaint.
It is for this reason that I sued in the Lusaka High Court the State and the 3 police officers identified as Steven Simwenda, Brian Chipango and Joseph Kapasa for their brutal attack on me.
2. On November 15th 2023, the Police charged and arrested me for a case of what they alleged was a serious case of sedition. Following a state sponsored process to take over and hijack the leadership of our party, the Patriotic Front, our party leadership organized a party gathering at the Party Secretariat located at the corner of Lumumba and Panganani Road.
During this process, I made a post on my Facebook Page stated as below:
“National Shutdown”
“This amendment to the Patriotic Front Office Bearers remains Illegal. Like the illegal changes at Parliament or anywhere else, the extra-ordinary general conference that made Miles Sampa PF President, remains illegal and was held outside the provisions of the Patriotic Front Constitution.”
“The Patriotic Front shall not be stolen by a stooge installed by the President Hakainde Hichilema”
“Parliament, Courts, and the Registrar of Societies will not deliver Justice. Family lets reclaim our Democracy and Constitutionalism by engaging in mass action and national shut-down”.
The Zambia Police claimed that this Facebook post had caused national alarm and proceeded to charge me with the offence of seditious practices contrary to Section 57(1)(b)(i) of the Penal Code Act Chapter87 of the laws of Zambia.
3. On 27th February 2024, members of the Party had assembled at Kabwata Police Station as the Secretary General of the Party, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda was detained there.
The Zambia Police had mobilized a huge contingent of anti-riot police officers in military gear and public control system. We obeyed their instructions and left the Police station.
A few of the leaders sat outside, across and away from the Police station on the kerb of the roadside.
We were shocked that the police followed us and charged at us, fired teargas canisters and live ammunition at us. I was manhandled and a police officer fired an AK 47 military assault rifle over my head, a traumatizing matter that left me with a terrible headache for weeks and a ring in my ears.
We were picked up and I was detained with other junior party members; Jacqueline Chopa, Gideon Tolopa and Gift Kachingwe.

4. State House and the presidency have been running online rogue social-media pages to spread misinformation, perpetuate hate speech, cyber bullying, and generate false stories and reports against members of the Opposition. These malicious reports are designed to malign the Opposition and critics of President Hakainde Hichilema to attempt to damage the reputation of members of the Opposition. I have been a constant victim of reports fabricated by the State House rogue media such as Koswe which is dedicated to churning out malicious content against me and other members. These malicious reports have real consequences in the world. What the State House media report constitutes defamation and character assassination, cyber bullying and harassment, doxing, hate speech and incitement of arrest and violence against me.
Our numerous attempts to complain to the Zambia Police yields nothing as the Zambia Police officers are afraid to pursue the complaint since the perpetrators of this crime are located at State House.

I hope that my report will be helpful to establish the truth of what is happening in Zambia.

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

STATEMENT BY MR THABO KAWANA, PERMANENT SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA, ON THE TERMINATION OF CAMNET TV CHANNEL FROM DSTV AND GOTV PLATFORMS

STATEMENT BY MR THABO KAWANA, PERMANENT SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA, ON THE TERMINATION OF CAMNET TV CHANNEL FROM DSTV AND GOTV PLATFORMS

The Ministry of Information and Media wishes to inform the nation that it has not found any law upon which to advise His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, to halt the termination of CAMNET TV channel from DSTV and GOTV platforms.

The nation may recall that Mrs Victoria Chiluba, during the funeral service of her late husband Pastor Moses Chiluba, called upon His Excellency the President to save CAMNET TV from being terminated from DSTV and GOTV platforms.

Following the appeal, His Excellency the President tasked the Ministry of Information and Media to deal with the matter conclusively.

The Ministry carried out preliminary inquiries, which revealed that the contention was a contractual matter between CAMNET TV and MultiChoice Africa Holdings, an international company domiciled in South Africa.

Consequently, the Ministry reported the matter to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) for investigation and recommendation.

After a thorough investigation, which included meetings with CAMNET TV and MultiChoice Africa Holdings representatives, the CCPC has confirmed that the decision by MultiChoice Africa Holdings to discontinue carriage of CAMNET TV on their DSTV and GOTV platforms is purely contractual and that there was no evidence to support any anti-competitive trading practices by MultiChoice Africa Holdings in the pay television market.

According to the findings by the CCPC, CAMNET TV consistently failed to meet the agreed-upon performance standards outlined in the Channel Distribution Agreement (CDA), specifically regarding feed availability and on-air hours, which led to concerns by MultiChoice Africa Holdings about equipment damage and a decline in service quality.

The Ministry notes from the CCPC Report that MultiChoice Africa Holdings repeatedly communicated these performance concerns to CAMNET TV station but the issues remained unresolved for years.

In view of the foregoing, the Ministry has found no legal comfort to advise His Excellency the President to halt the termination of CAMNET TV channel from DSTV and GOTV platforms.

In the alternative, we advise CAMNET TV to either negotiate a revised contract or explore the option of using other service providers such as TopStar and Muvi TV.

lawmaker who proposed m@sturb@t!on ban bill says he’s receiving death threats

0

A Mississippi lawmaker, who has tabled a bill seeking to ban men from masturbating, says he has been receiving death threats over that.

In an interview with TMZ, state Senator Bradford Blackmon said men from various places in the world have taken issue with his proposed masturbation ban, adding that he has been receiving “vile” messages and even death threats.

But Blackmon, who is a Democrat, explained that though the proposed bill is real, it shouldn’t be given significant attention as he aimed to stir up a discussion regarding the double standards on reproductive health when it comes to men and women. Blackmon, however, said he has contacted authorities to report the death threats.

Named the “Contraception Begins at Erection Act,” Blackmon’s bill seeks to make it “unlawful for a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.” His proposed masturbation ban also seeks to “provide criminal penalties” for perpetrators.

The ban, however, does not apply to genetic material that is “donated or sold to a facility for the purpose of future procedures to fertilize an embryo” and genetic material that is “discharged with the use of a contraceptive or contraceptive method intended to prevent fertilization of an embryo.”

Blackmon explained that he tabled the bill to initiate a discussion on the policing of women’s bodies in reproductive health, TMZ reported. He also said he thought the bill would be largely received with humor, but it appears that is not the case for some men.

Despite the backlash from men, Blackmon said he has received positive feedback from women as they have expressed their gratitude for his reason behind proposing the masturbation ban.

Abortion in Mississippi, a largely conservative state, is banned except for just a few cases. Blackmon’s bill is also not expected to see the light of day despite the threats on his life.

Rwanda Ready for War: Paul Kagame’s Chilling Warning to South Africa

Paul Kagame Warns South Africa: Rwanda Ready for Confrontation “Any Day” in Chilling Response
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has issued a stark warning to South Africa, declaring that his country is prepared for confrontation “any day.” This chilling statement comes in response to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent comments on the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Kagame accused South Africa of distorting facts, spreading lies, and overstepping its role as a mediator in the crisis. The exchange has ignited a war of words between the two nations, raising fears of further instability in an already volatile region.

Kagame Fires Back: “Distortions, Attacks, and Lies”
In a series of tweets, Kagame directly addressed Ramaphosa’s claims, calling them misleading and accusing South African officials of misrepresenting their private conversations.

“What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies,” Kagame wrote.

He emphasised that the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is a legitimate army, not a militia, and criticised the South African-led SAMIDRC force for engaging in offensive operations alongside groups like the FDLR, which Rwanda considers a genocidal threat.

“SAMIDRC is not a peacekeeping force. It was authorised by SADC as a belligerent force engaging in offensive combat operations to help the DRC Government fight against its own people,” Kagame stated.

Kagame also claimed that SAMIDRC’s presence displaced the East African Community Regional Force, a genuine peacekeeping mission, which he said contributed to the failure of negotiations. He further clarified that Ramaphosa never issued a warning to Rwanda during their conversations, unless it was delivered in a language Kagame did not understand.

“President Ramaphosa has never given a ‘warning’ of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand,” Kagame quipped.

Ramaphosa Mourns Fallen Soldiers, Defends South Africa’s Role
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa mourned the loss of 13 South African soldiers in the DRC, blaming the M23 rebel group and the RDF for the escalation.

“We bow our heads in honour of their heroic and gallant fight for peace,” Ramaphosa tweeted.

He reiterated South Africa’s commitment to peacekeeping, denying that its military presence in the DRC is a declaration of war.

“South Africa’s military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa also expressed concern over the speculation surrounding the state of South African troops and the volatile conditions on the ground. He called on South Africans to rally behind their soldiers, who are part of both SADC and United Nations efforts to bring peace to the region.

“All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent,” he urged.

A Tense Standoff with Regional Implications
Kagame’s response has heightened tensions between the two nations. He accused South Africa of misrepresenting their conversations and questioned its ability to mediate in the conflict.

“If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator,” Kagame stated.

He also issued a stark warning, saying,

“If South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.”

The exchange has sparked concerns over the stability of the region, with both leaders standing firm on their positions. Ramaphosa emphasised the need for diplomatic efforts, calling for an immediate end to hostilities and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process.

“We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity,” Ramaphosa said.

However, Kagame’s defiant tone suggests that Rwanda is unwilling to back down, raising the spectre of further escalation. The situation remains tense, with the international community closely watching developments in the region.

DR Congo president vows ‘vigorous’ fight to halt M23 rebel advance

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has vowed to restore
government authority in the east, where Rwanda-backed M23
rebels have seized control of the city of Goma and are
reportedly advancing south to take more territory.
In a televised address to the nation, he said a “vigorous and
coordinated response” against what he called “terrorists” was
under way.

He criticised the international community for “inaction” and
for not doing enough in the wake of the escalating security
crisis.

The weeks-long offensive by the rebels has promoted warnings of
a looming humanitarian crisis and growing international
pressure to end the fighting.

During Wednesday night’s address, Tshisekedi rallied all
Congolese to join together and support the army’s fight to
retake control.

“Be sure of one thing: the Democratic Republic of Congo will
not let itself be humiliated or crushed. We will fight and we
will triumph,” he said.

The fighting has forced about 500,000 people from their homes,
worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis, according to the
UN.

Since the fighting began, the city has been cut off from
electricity and water and food is in scarce supply.
An East African regional bloc virtual summit on Wednesday
evening convened by Kenya’s President William Ruto, which
Tshisekedi snubbed, called for a “peaceful settlement of the
conflicts”.

It was attended by Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, alongside the leaders
of other member countries Burundi, South Sudan, Tanzania and
Somalia.

The heads of state “strongly urged the government of the DR
Congo to directly engage with all stakeholders, including the
M23 and other armed groups that have grievances”.
Tshisekedi has been refusing to talk directly to the M23 –
insisting on only talking to Rwanda.

The East African leaders also called for a joint summit of the
bloc and leaders of the southern African regional community
(Sadc) to “deliberate on the way forward”. DR Congo is a member
of both the East African Community and Sadc.

Tshisekedi paid tribute to the Sadc soldiers “fighting
alongside us” and UN forces who had died in the wake of the
rebel assault on Goma.

Thirteen South African peacekeepers have been killed in the
deadly conflict in Goma, leading to heightened tensions between
South Africa and Rwanda.

On Wednesday night, Kagame said Rwanda was ready for a
confrontation with South Africa if necessary, following a claim
by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa that M23 fighters
and Rwandan forces were responsible for the deaths.
In a strongly worded statement directly responding to Ramaphosa
on X, Kagame accused him of distorting their private
conversations about the volatile situation.

“If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions,
that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to
take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator. And if South
Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter
in that context any day,” he said.

The exchange marks a significant escalation in tensions between
the two nations, whose relationship has been fragile for
several years.

On Wednesday, Angola called for the Congolese and Rwandan
leaders to meet urgently in Luanda.

The country, which mediated a failed attempt at talks in
December before the M23 launched its latest offensive, also
called for the resumption of East African Community-led
discussions relating to the unrest in eastern DR Congo.

It came as Tshisekedi visited Luanda for discussions on the
next steps in the Angola-led talks.
Both the EAC-led and the Luanda peace efforts have in the past
failed to resolve the crisis.

Is Paul Kagame on his last legs as he rattles all key stakeholders in the Eastern Congo Conflict?

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba writes:

Is Paul Kagame on his last legs as he rattles all key stakeholders in the Eastern Congo Conflict?

He has been the darling of the West…until now.

DRC is the wealthiest country in the World and by mineral resources endowment, and the war in Eastern Congo is primarily about this wealth.

While the conflict has been raging in the last 30 years in Eastern Congo, Rwanda has emerged as among large exporters and major producers of minerals like tin, tantalum, rare earths, gold and tungsten.

Mining, though we don’t know of any major mines, has become a major source of export revenue for Rwanda.

Apple, Samsung and their mineral traders would rather claim that they import their raw materials from Rwanda than the conflict ridden DRC, as this would attract human rights condemnation of child labour and conflict and blood minerals.

So the conflict is fueled by traders and multinational companies and use the local conflicts of ethnicity and border issues as excuse for the war.

Eastern DRC has the largest number of deployed UN peacekeepers under Monusc is the longest peacekeeping Mission in the world, yet the conflict continues to rage.

The United Nations established and deployed the United Nations  Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSC) and SADC has deployed the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

Kenya recently sent troops to DRC to support the UN forces.

Kagame has launched an all out war through the rebel group M23, in Eastern Congo capturing Goma.

It’s like he is no longer pretending that the war machinery of M23 is from Rwanda.

M23 has captured Goma, the capital and largest city of the North Kivu Province in the eastern region and caused displacement of a a large population and a humanitarian crisis.

13 South African peacekeepers have been killed.

Kagame has increasingly become undiplomatic, disrespectful and abusive to President Tshisekedi and other leaders, multilateral institutions such as Great Lakes, SADC and East Africa Community.

His point is that nobody is listening that a tutsi population, who are Congolese, have been marginalised, victimized in Eastern Congo, thrur home and therefore justified to form a military rebel group to defend themselves and assert their existential rights .

He places emphasis that these Tutsis are NOT Rwandese.
Hence M23.

More than six (6) million people have died as a result of the conflict in the DRC since 1998.

With the latest escalation of conflict, it’s the people of Congo that continues to death, displacement while their mineral wealth is  carted away amidst plenty.

Mnangagwa versus Chiwenga: Who will blink first?

0

The political atmosphere in Zimbabwe has reached a boiling point, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga engaged in an increasingly bitter power struggle that could reshape the country’s future. At the center of this high-stakes battle is Mnangagwa’s bid for a third term, which many see as an attempt to extend his rule beyond the constitutionally-mandated two terms, a move met with fierce resistance from Chiwenga and his military-backed faction within the ruling Zanu-PF party.

Chiwenga, who has long been viewed as the likely successor to Mnangagwa when his second term ends in 2028, is quietly building an alliance within the military and Zanu-PF to thwart his boss’s third-term ambitions. The military, an influential power broker in Zimbabwean politics, has reportedly made its stance clear, signaling that it will not support Mnangagwa’s efforts to extend his presidency beyond the 2028 constitutional limit.

The rivalry between the two men has been escalating for months, and tensions have been further heightened by the involvement of Zimbabwe’s militant war veterans. Over the weekend, the ex-combatants, who played a pivotal role in the country’s liberation struggle, made a public demand for Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation. The veterans have accused the president of failing to fulfill his promises and have voiced strong criticism over what they perceive as widespread corruption, nepotism, and government incompetence under his leadership.

In response to the mounting pressure, Mnangagwa has denied any intentions of seeking a third term, asserting that he is committed to upholding the constitution. The president has repeatedly branded himself as a “constitutionalist,” despite his rise to power in November 2017 following a military coup that ousted longtime ruler Robert Mugabe. Mnangagwa’s claims to constitutional fidelity, however, have done little to quell the fears of Zimbabweans who worry about the potential implications of his ambition to extend his time in office.

As the political showdown between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga continues, the stakes could not be higher. The possibility of a leadership vacuum or violent conflict in the event of an unresolved power struggle looms large. Political analysts have warned that the outcome of this fierce battle for control will have serious and far-reaching consequences for Zimbabwe, affecting everything from governance to economic stability.

The war veterans’ challenge to Mnangagwa’s leadership, combined with the military’s entrenched role in Zimbabwean politics, has made it clear that the country’s political future hangs in the balance. With both men positioning themselves for power and the nation caught in the crossfire, Zimbabwe’s political landscape seems set for a dramatic transformation.

As the days pass, Zimbabweans anxiously await the resolution of this intense power struggle, knowing that the direction in which the country moves will depend largely on the outcome of the escalating confrontation between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga.

Chivayo seeks US$20 million monthly withdrawal limit from Zimbabwean bank

0

Controversial Zimbabwean tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo has requested Ecobank to increase the maximum monthly cash withdrawal limit on his company’s account to US$20 million.

Chivayo claims that the contract, which involves the supply and delivery of software, hardware, and other consumables, requires consistent access to foreign currency for various transactional needs, including cash payments for local obligations.

“This request is made considering a recent contract secured by IMC Technologies Incorporated with the government through the Ministry of ICT for the supply and delivery of critical software, hardware, and other consumables valued at US$100 million.

“This equipment will be imported from China, Dubai, India, and Europe, necessitating the requirements for access to considerable amounts of foreign currency, a major priority,” Chivayo said in the letter directed to Ecobank.

“To successfully fulfil this contract, IMC Technologies Incorporated requires consistent access to foreign currency for a range of transactional needs, many of which require cash payments particularly for local obligations such as transportation, clearing agents, customs, and other recurrent expenses.

“Accordingly, we kindly request that the maximum monthly cash withdrawal limit on the account be raised to US$20 million permanently to ensure sufficient cash flow in support of this project which is of significant national importance.”

In another letter, Chivayo, has again made another request to the same bank to increase the maximum monthly cash withdrawal limit on one of his companies, Edenbreeze Pvt Ltd’s accounts to US$20 million.

This time, he claims to have secured government contracts valued at US$120 million, requiring access to large amounts of foreign currency for imports and local expenses.

This development has raised eyebrows, given Chivayo’s controversial business dealings and his history as an ex-convict.

Critics have questioned the government’s decision to award such a lucrative contract to Chivayo’s company, despite his checkered past.

Former Mt Pleasant MP Fadzayi Mahere questioned the ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera:

“Please may you give us the details of the US$100 million contract you awarded to @wicknellchivayo. On what basis was his company chosen to supply consumables?

“Kindly provide details of the exact nature of the hardware and software he has been contracted to supply?

“Did this contract go to tender as required by law? Or was he handpicked? Can you please furnish us with the public tender advertisement in respect of these agreements if one exists?

“Thank you in advance for your engagement on the above in light of the constitutional imperative of transparency in all matters of public finance management.

“We need new leaders.”

The request for a US$20 million monthly withdrawal limit has also sparked concerns about the potential for money laundering and other financial irregularities.

UK based Development Economist Chenayi Mutambasere asked the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and other anti-corruption bodies around the world to investigate Chivayo and his companies.

“Dear @anticorruption, @iccwbo, @ICCFraudNet, @Global_Witness, please can you investigate this individual @wicknellchivayo who is undertaking nefarious financially activity.

“The letter below is him asking to withdraw US$20m as cash every month from a bank in Zimbabwe without question or scrutiny. @wicknellchivayo has just requested the bank to allow him to withdraw US$20m as and when he likes without further scrutiny.

“He has mentioned Dubai, China, India and Europe as the counties he will transact in cash in yet these countries have caps on cash transactions.

“Interestingly Zimbabwe according to its national budget has only US$540 its reserves which means this one banking customer has deposits equalling half the country’s reserves yet it is not clear what business he does.

“The other interesting point is according to the 2025 budget the ICT ministry only has US$25m allocated. Where has the minister @TateMavetera sourced the alleged US$100m highlighted in this letter? Or is she part of the money laundering ring pls help us investigate.

“Globally the spending cap outside of AML scrutiny is US$10,000 so this warrants investigation. Thank you”

Ecobank has not publicly commented on Chivayo’s request.

Chivayo is currently receiving millions of dollars from the Zimbabwean government for a contentious US$40 million tender he secured a few years ago to supply election materials to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for the 2023 harmonised general election.

Can’t believe he pulled a gun on me – A$AP Rocky’s former friend A$AP Relli testifies

A$AP Rocky’s alleged victim and former friend, Terell Ephron, known as A$AP Relli, took the stand in the rapper’s assault trial on Tuesday, January 28, recounting the tense moment when Rocky allegedly pulled a gun on him during a heated argument in 2021.

Ephron, who was visibly shaken as he testified, described the encounter as happening quickly. When he saw the gun, he reportedly blurted out, “You better use that st, what the fk you got a gun for?” He added that he was willing to die for his respect, emphasizing, “If this is what you want to do, I still have my dignity.”

Ephron explained that the day before the alleged incident, he was present during a phone conversation between Rocky and A$AP Bari, in which Rocky spoke negatively about him, and their friendship, which had started in high school, had soured. The next day, Ephron claimed that Rocky, who rarely contacted him, began blowing up his phone while he was asleep, sending a text that read, “Let’s get to it … stop ducking my calls,” which Ephron interpreted as Rocky seeking a confrontation.

Ephron testified that Rocky then FaceTimed him, asked where he was staying, and arrived at his Hollywood hotel with two associates. During their argument, Ephron said Rocky pulled a gun from his waistband, fired it, and a bullet grazed Ephron’s knuckles.

Rocky’s attorney has argued that the gun was a movie prop and could not have fired real ammunition. However, Ephron testified that he had never seen Rocky with a prop gun or any gun prior to that day. The trial is ongoing, with more testimony expected Wednesday morning.

Rihanna, Rocky’s partner and mother of his two children, is expected to attend the trial in support of the rapper.

Rocky faces two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and, if convicted, could face up to 24 years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty and rejected a plea deal. Rocky’s lawyer has called Ephron’s allegations “bogus” and accused him of attempting to extort the rapper.

Diddy ex-assistant claims he was ordered to have s£x to prove his ‘loyalty’

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ former personal assistant has opened up about the moment his former employer allegedly ordered him to have s£x with a girl to “prove” his “loyalty.”

Speaking with journalist Mara S. Campo for Investigation Discovery’s docuseries “The Fall of Diddy,” which released its first two episodes on Monday, Phillip Pines revealed new details about the shocking allegations he made against the disgraced hip-hop mogul, 55, in a lawsuit he filed in December.

Pines, who allegedly worked for Combs from 2019 to 2021, is suing him for sexual battery, sexual harassment, and s£x trafficking, claiming that his job duties were to enable Combs’ alleged sexual activities.

In addition to facing a lawsuit from Pines and several others, Diddy is currently locked up in a Brooklyn jail as he awaits trial on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

In his new interview for the ID doc, Pines claimed loyalty was “everything” to Diddy, adding that the moment the disgraced musician allegedly told him to “prove himself’ was “something I won’t forget.”

“My life changed and I’ve never really recovered from it,” he said through tears.

According to Pines, Diddy had been drinking all day before the alleged “freak-off.” The former assistant went on to claim he was allegedly pressured to partake in the sex party after his boss offered him alcohol.

Pines claimed, “I froze before it took place, I didn’t know what was happening. In the moment it felt like what, is this fun for him? Is this a test for entertainment, does he know he’s doing this? Is he that gone?”

“I didn’t know what to do.”

“She gave me consent, yeah, nodded her head,” Pines said of the woman Diddy allegedly wanted him to have sex with. “I performed for a little bit and then I ran out of there as soon as I didn’t see him in my sight anymore.”

Explaining why he agreed, the rapper’s ex-assistant claimed he saw Diddy allegedly physically assault employees who stood up to him.

“I saw how angry he could get from the simplest thing. I thought to myself if I don’t do this I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said.

Today, Pines has a “great sense of remorse” about what he said happened. He also shared that he believed a “bomb would explode” if he ever divulged about the alleged incident.

“I come from a Christian background and I lean on those morals heavily,” he said, crying.

Diddy’s attorney told The Post: “No matter how many lawsuits are filed, it won’t change the fact that Mr Combs has never s£xually ass@ulted, or s£x trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor. We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason. Fortunately, a fair and impartial judicial process exists to find the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will prevail in court.”

“The Fall of Diddy” finale airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ID and streams on Max and Discovery+.

Enzo Fernandez trying to save his marriage with ex-wife after ‘discovering his Argentina teammate is trying to s£duce her’

0

Chelsea star, Enzo Fernandez is reportedly trying to repair his romance with childhood sweetheart Valentina Cervantes after discovering an Argentina teammate was trying to seduce her.

The pair sparked reunion rumours last week after being spotted kissing and holding hands as it emerged the pretty brunette was still in London and had yet to return to Argentina with their two children nearly a month after flying to the UK to ‘stay a few days.’

In an explosive claim about the midfielder’s apparent decision to get back with his estranged wife after their split last October, journalist Daniel Fava revealed on a popular TV show that it was linked to a move by another member of Argentina’s winning World Cup squad’s on Enzo’s long-time partner.

He added: ‘The information I have is that Enzo Fernandez is desperately trying to win her back because he’s heard that a fellow world champion is sniffing around her.’

The Argentine journalist offered no further clues about the identity of the mystery player involved.

After a colleague interrupted to say: ‘What you’re saying is that he prefers to get back with her than see another man jumping in,’ he said of Valentina: ‘Today she’s prettier than ever. Since the separation, she has gained a new sex appeal and energy’ before making a second bombshell claim that ‘more than one footballer’ had contacted her over social media since the shock split.

Valentina revealed late last month she would be jetting to London with their two children Olivia, four, and Benjamin, one, to see in the New Year with her ex after he told her he wanted to live alone and she returned to their homeland.

Enzo first fuelled rumours of a possible reconciliation by liking photos she posted last week showing off her curvaceous body in a pair of tight-fitting white leggings and a crop top.

Argentine journalists began to claim the couple had decided to give love a second chance after they were ‘spotted’ being affectionate with each other during a visit to Selfridges and it emerged Valentina was still in London.

Argentinian journalist Pepe Ochoa told the popular American TV programme LAM: ‘The reconciliation was in London. They are giving love a second chance.’

Speaking of their affectionate public display during a recent shopping trip, he said: ‘They were in Selfridges and went to buy things in Prada.

‘A friend of mine saw them. They were holding hands and there was a kiss.

‘He was with his dad and his youngest child. When people started to recognise them, she went one way and he stayed inside.’

Protesters set US and French embassies in DR Congo on fire

0

Protesters in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, Jan. 28, attacked and set fire to the United States embassy building in the country.

Armed men were seen on the roof of the building as thick black smoke billowed from the facility.

The protesters were heard chanting “death to imperialists”.

On Monday, the March 23 Movement (M23), a rebel group, claimed to have taken control of Goma, the largest city in North Kivu province in eastern DRC, sending thousands of people fleeing the area.

Since last week, at least 17 United Nations peacekeepers have been k!lled in the fighting, including three South African peacekeepers killed on Monday, Jan. 27, when the rebels launched an attack at the Goma airport.

M23 forces fought on Tuesday to seize the airport in their bid to complete their control of Goma.

The demonstrators also targeted Western and African countries they accuse of complicity in Rwanda’s support of M23 rebels, who have overrun the eastern provincial capital Goma.

The protesters attacked the embassies of France, Belgium, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya — countries they accuse of supporting the rebel group.

The demonstrators accused other countries of diplomatic inaction.

Jean-Noel Barrot, France’s foreign minister, said in a post on X that the attack on the embassy was “unacceptable”.

He said the embassy building briefly caught fire, adding that the blaze was swiftly brought under control.

Musalia Mudavadi, Kenyan cabinet secretary for foreign and diaspora affairs, said in a statement that the country is “deeply concerned” by the attacks on its embassy offices and personnel in Congo.

“The violent attacks, looting, and destruction of property are a grave violation of international law,” he added.

Speaking on national television, Patrick Muyaya, DRC’s communications minister, urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence against accredited consular infrastructure.

He later said the situation was under control.

Zanu-PF faction reacts to war veterans’ criticism of Mnangagwa’s leadership

0

A faction within Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party has reacted sharply to recent statements made by war veterans, denouncing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s allies for attempts to extend his tenure beyond the 2028 constitutional limit.

The tensions have flared after Mnangagwa appeared to reject calls for an extension of his presidency through a resolution passed at the 2024 Zanu-PF National People’s Conference, dubbed ‘Resolution #1.’ The resolution had advocated for the 82-year-old leader to remain in power until 2030, despite his constitutional term limit.

Blessed Runesu Geza, a member of the Zanu-PF Central Committee and a vocal critic, spearheaded the backlash, labeling Mnangagwa a “failed leader” who should step down or face unspecified consequences. Geza, known for his acerbic rhetoric and the nickname “Bombshell,” held a press conference in Harare, where he publicly criticized the President and his loyalists. His comments were soon followed by a statement from Ben Ncube, the organizing secretary of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), who expressed the ex-combatants’ disapproval of the President’s apparent move to amend the Constitution and extend his rule beyond 2028.

The criticisms by Geza and Ncube have sparked speculation about a possible power struggle within Zanu-PF, with political observers suggesting that the two factions may be backed by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, a frontrunner to succeed Mnangagwa after his second and final term.

In a televised address on Tuesday night, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere vehemently denounced Geza’s comments, accusing him of hypocrisy and disloyalty. Muswere noted that Geza had previously been a strong advocate for the 2030 extension resolution at the Zanu-PF conference, which made his current criticisms “surprising” and “self-contradictory.”

“These individuals, while purporting to be members of the ruling party, are not using proper channels to address their grievances,” Muswere said. “It is unfortunate that these individuals are now demonizing the President, even though they played a role in passing Resolution #1, which called for the President to stay in office until 2030.”

The Information Minister also expressed disappointment at what he called Geza’s bitterness, which he attributed to a 2018 primary election defeat. “It is unfortunate that the bitterness he suffered from that defeat is now causing him to turn against the President,” Muswere added, referring to Geza’s role in pushing for the resolution earlier.

Muswere stressed that Mnangagwa’s government has shown unwavering support for war veterans, citing the establishment of a standalone ministry to cater to their welfare and the creation of a War Veterans’ Wing within Zanu-PF. He also highlighted that the government had initiated over 8,000 developmental projects since Mnangagwa assumed office in 2017.

“The Second Republic has championed a deliberate welfare program for our veterans, recognizing them in the Constitution and ensuring their inclusion in Zimbabwe’s economy,” Muswere explained. “War veterans are a distinguished group of patriots who helped bring about the independence we enjoy today. Their contributions will never be forgotten.”

Muswere’s defense of the President’s leadership comes amidst growing tensions in Zanu-PF as factions vie for influence ahead of the 2028 election. The war veterans’ calls for Mnangagwa’s resignation reflect a deepening divide within the ruling party, which could have significant implications for the country’s political future.

As Zanu-PF grapples with internal disputes and leadership challenges, many observers are watching closely to see how the party will navigate the complex dynamics leading up to the next election.

THREE MILITARY-RUN STATES LEAVE WEST AFRICAN BLOC – WHAT WILL CHANGE?

0

THREE MILITARY-RUN STATES LEAVE WEST AFRICAN BLOC – WHAT WILL CHANGE?

Three countries under military rule have officially left West African regional bloc Ecowas (Economic Community of West African States), after more than a year of diplomatic tensions.

The withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger is a huge blow to Ecowas, which at 50 years old is considered Africa’s most important regional group.

The split was sparked after the three departing countries refused Ecowas demands to restore diplomatic rule.

On Wednesday, Ecowas said it would keep its “doors open” to Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, even though they have forged ahead with their own bloc, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES by its French acronym).

Prior to Wednesday’s shake-up, the bloc had 15 members, including states like Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal.

Citizens of all Ecowas countries currently have the right to live and work in all member states, while goods can circulate freely.

Relations between Ecowas and the three Sahel countries have been tense since the military seized power in Niger in 2023, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.

After the Niger coup, Ecowas imposed crippling sanctions on the country, such as border closures, a no-fly zone for all commercial flights and the freezing of central bank assets.

Ecowas also threatened to deploy its forces to Niger in order to restore democratic rule.

But this hard line merely strengthened the resolve of the three juntas.

Mali and Burkina Faso criticised Ecowas’ “inhuman” sanctions and vowed to defend Niger if the bloc intervened militarily.

After being suspended by Ecowas, the three states hit back by giving notice last January that they would withdraw in a year, meeting the timeline set by the bloc for states that decide to leave.

Negotiations between Ecowas and the juntas have taken place since then – but have failed.

The three countries accuse Ecowas of being too close to Western powers and have instead pivoted towards Russia.

According to the departing countries, they will now experience greater sovereignty and also independence from a force that has a foreign agenda.

But analysts say Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso may struggle outside the bloc – these are poor and landlocked countries whose economies depend on their West African neighbours.

While Ecowas works out the terms of its future relationship with the three countries, it says it will continue to recognise all passports and identity cards bearing the Ecowas logo held by citizens from Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

The countries will also remain in the bloc’s free-trade scheme.

Similarly, AES chairman, Mali’s military ruler Assimi Goïta, said last January that the right of Ecowas citizens to “enter, circulate, reside, establish and leave the territory” of the new bloc would be maintained.

Ilyasu Gadu, an international affairs expert and media consultant based in Nigeria’s capital Abuja, told the BBC: “The three junta leaders have taken steps to say: ‘Yes, we are pulling out of Ecowas but we want to maintain our relationships. We will not close our borders’ because they must have realised that if they do that, they would have shot themselves in the foot.” [BBC News]

Jacob Zuma’s daughter arrested over South Africa riots

The daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma,
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, has been arrested over her alleged
involvement in the 2021 riots that left over 300 people dead,
police say.

Violence, chaos, and fear ripped through the port city of
Durban, then spread to Gauteng, after Zuma’s jailing sparked
intense protests over four years ago.
Zuma-Sambudla, a controversial figure in her own right, was
accused of sharing incendiary social media posts that fuelled
the civil unrest.

The arrest comes as a “result of a meticulous investigation”
said spokesperson for the Hawks elite police unit, Brig Thandi
Mbambo.

Zuma-Sambudla handed herself in to Durban Central police
station on Thursday morning to face charges under the
Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and
Related Activities Act and incitement to commit violence,
police said.

Her father’s party uMkhonto WeSizwe (MK), of which she is a
senior member, confirmed her court appearance and urged
supporters to “mobilize all ground forces to attend in
numbers.”

While she has not commented directly on the charges,
Zuma-Sambudla shared a cryptic note on X that simply said: “We
see you.”
MK party spokesperson Nhlamule Ndhela told local broadcaster
ENCA she had long been preparing for this moment
“She conditioned herself, because there have been many threats
about her imminent arrest for the past three or four years,” he
said.
He added that she will abide by the law as “a law-abiding
citizen”.

This is not the first time her name has been brought up in
connection to the 2021 riots, which are considered one of the
bloodiest episodes in post-apartheid South Africa.
Zuma resigned as president in 2018 after nine years in office,
plagued by corruption allegations, which he claimed were part
of a political conspiracy.

Three years later, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for
contempt of court after refusing to testify before a panel
investigating corruption under his presidency.
Protests erupted after he surrendered to serve his sentence.
During the unrest, Zuma-Sambudla was outspoken on X, frequently
sharing images of the destruction and chaos, accompanied by the
caption: “KZN, we see you.”

She used this phrase often throughout the violence. In a now
deleted post, she shared a video of someone firing an automatic
rifle at a poster of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In 2022, Brig Mbambo , told local media they were not directly
investigating her, but she had been named in statements from
sources.

In response to this, Zuma-Sambudla said on X, “I have no fear!
I will not be intimidated! I have beaten the dogs, now the
masters are coming out! We see you!”
At the same time, the Jacob Zuma Foundation, said in a
statement the former president’s children were being targeted.
Last year, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)
released a report that said the riots were a “carefully
orchestrated event”.

But it said it could find no direct link to Zuma’s arrest.
In 2023, a former security guard was sentenced to 12 years in
prison for his role in the deadly riots.
He was the first person to be prosecuted for the riots.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who succeeded Jacob Zuma in 2018,
described the violence as an “attempted insurrection”.

More than 200 shopping malls were looted and more than 150,000
jobs were estimated to have been lost during the unrest, which
lasted for several days.
Last year, Zuma’s MK ran against his former party, the ANC, in
elections, gaining 15% of the vote to become the country’s
third largest party.

Tupac murder suspect faces new charge for another incident in jail

Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the former gang member arrested in connection with the shooting death of Tupac Shakur, is facing a new charge after he and a fellow inmate at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas got into a physical altercation.

Per TMZ, Davis, who is awaiting his trial in Tupac’s 1996 shooting death, got into a “mutual combat” with the other inmate by “throwing closed fist strikes.” The other inmate was reportedly put in a headlock by Davis during the fight.

Reports also state that a corrections officer had to discharge pepper spray on the two brawling inmates before their fight was ultimately broken up. In the wake of the fight, Davis, who has since been charged with battery by a prisoner, is said to have told officers that he was “just standing his ground.”]

Davis, a suspect long on investigators’ radar, has openly acknowledged his presence in the Cadillac during the fatal drive-by shooting of Tupac. In his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” Davis detailed his involvement. He also claimed in the book that he provided the murder weapon.

Davis’ arrest also came on the heels of a police raid on his wife’s Henderson residence, during which authorities sought evidence related to Shakur’s killing, according to CBS News.

The police seized various items during the raid, including multiple computers, a cellphone, a hard drive, a Vibe magazine featuring Tupac, 40-caliber bullets, photograph-filled containers, and a copy of Davis’ 2019 memoir.

Following his arrest, Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Jason Johansson said Davis was the “shot caller for this group of individuals that committed this crime,” adding that the suspect “orchestrated the plan that was carried out.”

Davis has been locked up since September 2023, and his murder trial is scheduled to start in March.

Captain America star Anthony Mackie faces backlash after saying role doesn’t represent ‘America’

Anthony Mackie is facing backlash on social media after stating the movie Captain America ‘represents a lot of different things and America should not be one of them.’

The 46-year-old actor was candid about what playing the role meant to him and his childhood dreams.

His remarks on America have however triggered a huge reaction on social media, with many fans and citizens alike dissatisfied with his comments.

In a video from a promo event in Rome, Anthony expressed his thoughts on the movie but it was clear he was not representing his country, though he plays the role of the hero.

“Captain America” in 2025: “To me, Captain America represents a lot of things.. and America isn’t one of them.”????????????????‍

Mackie stated that ‘Captain America’ stands for a lot of different things, but not “America,” particularly. Fans and citizens have since taken to social media to express their disappointment and frustration with his words.

“More like Mr Commie”, one user wrote. “Well, I for one will avoid anything he is in, not that I was ever really a fan“, another said.

“Do Hollywood actors have a brain?”, a third stated.

While sharing his thoughts on what the movie represents, Mackie chose to make it about morals over patriotism, and it shows Captain America is a man willing to stand for what he believes in rather than just the great colors of red, white, and blue.

On social media, many have deemed Mackie’s words as “woke Hollywood” talk, and some are even swearing to never show interest in the movie again.

Anthony Mackie stepped behind the shield after Chris Evans embodied the role.

“Captain America: Brave New World” is expected to be out on February 14, and its release will show whether his take on the character actually plays out on screen, or if it will be overshadowed by the ongoing controversy.

Johannesburg’s US-funded hospital stops transgender services

A clinic in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, which provides essential healthcare services to the transgender community, is one of the many centres impacted by the United States’ decision to freeze funding to several of its international beneficiaries.

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute’s transgender health programme, previously supported by USAID, has been forced to close some of its services, effective Tuesday, January 28, 2025. This comes after a “stop order communication” was issued regarding certain USAID-funded programmes, as confirmed by Wits University’s Professor Shabir Madhi.

According to Madhi, the communication ordered an immediate cessation of all activities related to the programme, leaving patients and staff members facing uncertainty.

A transgender woman who visited the Hillbrow clinic on Tuesday afternoon shared her experience of receiving an SMS notifying her to collect her hormone script before 4pm, as the clinic would no longer be able to provide services. While she expressed that she could collect her script at a private institution, she noted the added financial burden of having to pay for the service herself.

The SMS sent to patients read in part: “Our donor, USAID, has served the Wits RHI key population programme a notice to pause programme implementation. As of close of business tomorrow [Tuesday] 28 January, we are unable to provide services until further notice.”

An employee from the clinic revealed that approximately 1,800 patients and 24 staff members are now affected by the closure. Healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and data capturers integrated into the programme, are left in a state of confusion about their future salaries and job security.

Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a healthcare expert, voiced her concern, stating that South Africa needs to reduce its reliance on foreign aid to ensure sustainable healthcare. “People should be worried. There is an impact on patient care and livelihoods. Doctors, nurses, and data capturers that are integrated into our clinics and hospitals will now be stranded and will not know where to get their salaries going forward,” Dr. Coetzee said.

The South African Department of Health has yet to issue a formal response. Spokesperson Foster Mohale noted that they had not received official communication from USAID, but would provide further details once the department is formally notified.

The freeze in funding underscores the vulnerability of critical healthcare services in South Africa, particularly for marginalized communities, and raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such programs without foreign support.

Former US Senator Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery and corruption

Former US Senator, Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, following his conviction on bribery and corruption charges.

Last July, a jury found Menendez guilty on 16 counts for accepting gifts, including gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz, in exchange for helping foreign governments.

Prosecutors were seeking at least a 15-year sentence, citing in court documents the “rare gravity” of the ex-senator’s crimes.

Lawyers for Menendez, 71, had called for a shorter sentence paired with community service.

“Somewhere along the way, you became, I’m sorry to say, a corrupt politician,” US Judge Sidney Stein said before handing down Menendez’s sentence, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner.

Before receiving his sentence, Menendez cried while addressing the courtroom.

“Other than family, I have lost everything I ever cared about,” he said, according to court reporters. “Every day I’m awake is a punishment.”

He then asked the judge “to temper your sword of justice with the mercy of a lifetime of duty”.

Menendez’s son, Rob Menendez, a Democratic congressman, and his daughter, MSNBC anchor Alicia Menendez, were seated in court behind their father.

Earlier on Wednesday, two of Menendez’s co-conspirators were sentenced in the case.

Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer who prosecutors say delivered gold and cash to the senator, was given a sentence of seven years in prison and fined $1.75m (£1.4m).

Wael Hana, an Egyptian-American businessman, who prosecutors say brokered a deal between Menendez and the Egyptian government, received more than eight years in prison and was fined $1.25m.

Menendez has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has said he plans to appeal the guilty verdict.

The New Jersey senator, who used to lead the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, resigned from the upper chamber in August.

The guilty verdict came after a nine-week trial, during which jurors saw evidence that Menendez accepted gifts including gold bars worth over $100,000 and more than $480,000 in cash, found by FBI agents inside Menendez’s home.

In exchange for the bribes, prosecutors said Menendez helped secure millions of dollars in US aid for Egypt.

His lawyers argued the gifts did not qualify as bribes, saying prosecutors failed to prove Menendez took any actions as a result of the bribes.

The former senator was also convicted for trying to influence criminal probes involving his two co-defendants, Hana and Daibes.

A third businessman involved in the case, Jose Uribe, has pleaded guilty and is expected to be sentenced later this year. He testified against Menendez during the trial.

Nadine Menendez, the ex-senator’s wife, has also been accused of acting as a participant in the scheme by shuttling messages and bribes between the three men and Egyptian officials.

Her trial was delayed so she could undergo breast cancer treatment and will begin in March. She has pleaded not guilty.

Seeking a new Judiciary for a New Democratic Zambia- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Seeking a new Judiciary for a New Democratic Zambia

…Never ever did I feel that citizens have replaced respect for disdain, admiration for scorn, high regard for ridicule,  for this group than now…

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

We have a people in the nation beginning to look to outsiders for help and salvation than to rely on its own internal mechanisms such as the Judiciary.

The visit by the United Nations Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur, Irene Khan typifies and captures this scenario.

Today she met the “Per Incuriam” group!

This was supposed to be a moment of celebrations for citizens who feel oppressed, whose rights have been violated, whose cry for an independent arbiter in their disputes and suffer oppression from abusers of human rights.

But it is a moment of silent outrage.

Sell-outs of Democracy.

I strongly think the whole group, like the Zambia Police Command, must go, for our country to be restored to the path of wellness.

Their conduct, especially the last two years, makes me believe that the next new Government must start a process where these are all made to re-apply alongside the recruitment of credible people to take some of their places.

It is unthinkable, that in my lifetime,  that I would witness severe criticims of the Judiciary as happened now.

This treatment was an allotment spared for members of the Executive and Legislature and instiutions such as the Zambia Police and the Electoral Commission of Zambia where the rot occurs with contempt.

It was unthinkable that I would render a severe and critical opinion of the Judiciary.

But that is how far the rot in our country has gone, to the extent that we are at the precipice of losing our cherished Democracy as constitutional offices, such as this group, cow to fear and participate in executive schemes to undermine the rule of law and the lady Justice.

Therefore, it has now become a sacred imperative and duty that we must expose all the rot, including the violations perpetrated by the Executive that the Judiciary has actively participated in.

It is clear that the Judiciary has succumbed and has not been spared to the relentlessly decay that has infected  the Executive and Legislature, in the last 60years and this rot has become septic.

In the life of our country, the Judiciary was expected to be guardians of Democracy, gate keepers of the Rule of Law, promoters of Justice, defenders of the Republican Constitution and a bulwark against tyrany and dictatorship.

But they have been active colluders and enablers of dictatorship denying even basic rights to citizens and the due process of the law such as the right to bail and bail pending appeal.

They have even created a special court, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court, a court that violate all principles of justice such as the right to due process, fairness and Justice, a court created for allegations of previous corruption only, and for targeted members of the former ruling party only.

None of their corrupt officials appear before this court.
We have witnessed this decay, year after year, government after government and now the depth of the fall of the Judiciary has reached rock bottom!

A new crop must take their place to ensure that Zambia doesn’t ever regress to the whims and caprices of dictatorship and tyranny and citizens must ensure that Zambia grows to become a thriving and flourishing Democracy as envisioned in 1964 and 1991.

A new crop must take their place so that Zambians should never look to foreigners and outsiders to resolve their own disputes and issues that arise, but must resort and have faith in their own internal mechanisms such as strong democratic institutions and an independent Judiciary.

Dora endorses UPND Petauke candidate

FORMER PF Petauke Central Member of Parliament Dr Dora Siliya has encouraged the people of Petauke to vote for UPND aspiring candidate Severian Lungu in the upcoming Petauke Central by-elections.

Dr Siliya stated that if the people of Petauke Central want development then the right person for them is Lungu, who is standing on the ruling party’s ticket.

She explained that this is because when one is working closer with the government, development tends to reach closer to the people.

The former cabinet minister during the PF stated that her fellow Nsengas must use their heads when voting by giving a chance to the candidate of the ruling party just like the way the candidate used wisdom to contest on the UPND party or continue languishing in poverty.

“There is hunger in Petauke. I can’t lie to people that I will bring them relief when I’m not in government. So I think Severian has used his head, that’s why God gave us wisdom. People won’t eat the name of the party if you are to go the opposition route, people need food and businesses to thrive, to ensure that government provides those opportunities.”

“You need someone who is close to government so that you can be helped. I don’t feel nice whenever I hear people complaining of hunger. So vote for Severian who will bring you food and development because he is part of the ruling party,” said Dr Siliya in Nsenga on Pasme Radio.

She further explained that the UPND candidate was a son of the soil of Petauke as he also supported her during the times she could contest for the seat.

“Severian supported me in 2021 and now that he is standing on the ruling party, I should say no? Not at all. So people expect me not to support him just because he’s UPND? This is someone who supported me during my campaigns and I’m returning the favour by supporting him and it’s not only because of that but because I know he can deliver,” disclosed the former PF lawmaker.

Dr Siliya described Lungu as a down to earth individual who will work towards putting the needs of the people first before his own.

“Severian is a humble and respectful person. If you vote for him, trust me you won’t lack. We also need to question ourselves that if we take this person to parliament, what will he do? Will he speak for us? Those are the questions you the people of Petauke need to be asking yourselves so vote for someone who can speak English. Someone who won’t embarrass you by keeping quiet in the house. And that person is Severian,” she said.

The Petauke Central seat which was held by fugitive former law maker Emmanuel Jay Banda fell vacant after Banda failed to show up in the house under the seven day ultimatum he was given by the speaker Nelly Mutti.

In November last year, Mutti notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) of a vacant seat in Petauke Central of which the ECZ later set the date for the by-election which takes place next Thursday on the February 6.

HICHILEMA STILL PROMISING WHEN HIS TERM IS OVER, HE IS A STORY-TELLER – MMEMBE

HICHILEMA STILL PROMISING WHEN HIS TERM IS OVER, HE IS A STORY-TELLER – MMEMBE

Socialist Party president Fred M’membe is wondering that President Hakainde Hichilema has continued to make promises over loadshedding even when his tenure is coming to an end.

Commenting President Hichilema’s promise when he was departing for Power Summit in Tanzania on Monday this week, Dr M’membe says President Hichilema has continued to lie despite that none of his promise on addressing the loadshedding has been implemented.

Dr M’membe said the country continues going for hours without power, no update on the China trip promise but Hichilema continues to make more promises.

The Socialist Party president said this in an article below availed to Zambian Eye;

HICHILEMA AND HIS LOAD-SHEDDING PROMISES

It is now standard practice that every time Mr Hakainde Hichilema travels, he has to promise Zambians something? Give it to him, the man has been consistent with concocting illusions right on the runway, to make himself feel good about the miserable state of our nation’s affairs.

We have seen him promise more and more, each time he’s traveling outside the country. It’s more or less like a ritual now. Just a few days ago, when he travelled to Tanzania, he promised to resolve the energy crisis. Similarly, when he traveled to China last year, he promised that they would resolve Zambia’s energy crisis. How many promises will he make on the same issue? Does he have to lie and give people false hope at every given opportunity? Why does he find it so convenient to present a false reality to the public?

Last year, we were told that Zesco had signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Power Construction Corporation of China for the development of three power projects in Zambia. And these were; the Framework Cooperation Agreement for the supplying, delivery and installation of rooftop solar system projects, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Agreement of 100 megawatts Kariba-North Solar photovoltaic power plant and, the Engineering Procurement and Construction Agreement for 100 megawatts for the Kafue- Lower Solar PhotoVoltaic Power Plant.

We were further told that these three projects were aimed at fixing the current load-shedding, which has literally paralyzed our entire economy.

In fact, Mr Hichilema guaranteed that once the three energy deals were actualised, load-shedding will be no more. But here we are again with more promises to end load-shedding yet we remain unaware about progress or implementation of the previous commitments and agreements they entered into in China and many others.

It’s clear that Mr Hichilema and his league find it convenient to generate more lies on these issues, as opposed to swiftly actualizing their commitments and agreements. They’re only good at talking, not taking action. They’re story-tellers.

Still making more promises even when their five-year mandate is almost over.

UN rapporteur thanks government for facilitating her visit

THE United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression Irene Khan has expressed gratitude to the Zambian government for inviting her to visit the country to assess issues related to the right to freedom of expression and opinion.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19xn2uQE2p/?mibextid=oFDknk

Khan who arrived in the country on January 20, 2025, is on a 10 day assignment which ends on Friday 31, this week.

Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on the first deputy speaker Attractor Chisangano yesterday, Khan revealed that she was the first rapporteur to visit the country in the last seven years which she stated emphasised the importance that government places in advancing the rights that cut across, from development to democracy.

She noted that freedom of expression and opinion is one of the most important ones as it cuts across all the other human rights.

“I’m the first rapporteur to make a visit in the last seven years or so it emphasises the importance that the government places in advancing the rights that cut across from development to democracy and to empower citizens and the civil society.”

“I want to emphasise that of all the human rights that we know, it is actually one of the most important one because it is as important for democracy as it is for development. It is as important for development as for elections.  I’m very pleased that the government of Zambia invited me to visit,” she stated.

The special envoy is expected to hold a press conference on the last day of her visit this Friday to report to the country her findings.

And Chisangano expressed gratitude to Khani for having recognised the crucial role that the National Assembly plays in upholding the right to freedom of expression and opinion.

“The National Assembly of Zambia is grateful that you recognise the role that it plays in upholding the role of the media and citizen’s right to freedom of expression. It is through parliament that the necessary legal framework for the protection of the right of freedom of expression is promoted,” she stated.

Kagame, Ramaphosa differ over their telephone Call

..as South Africa loses 13 peace keepers…

President Paul Kagame Wrote;

I held two conversations this week with President Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC, including earlier today.

What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies. If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed.

A few important clarifications for the record:

1. The Rwanda Defence Force is an army, not a militia.

2. SAMIDRC is not a peacekeeping force, and it has no place in this situation. It was authorized by SADC as a belligerent force engaging in offensive combat operations to help the DRC Government fight against its own people, working alongside genocidal armed groups like FDLR which target Rwanda, while also threatening to take the war to Rwanda itself.

3. SAMIDRC displaced a true peacekeeping force, the East African Community Regional Force, and this contributed to the failure of the negotiation processes.

4. President Ramaphosa has never given a “warning” of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand. He did ask for support to ensure the South African force has adequate electricity, food and water, which we shall help communicate.

5. President Ramaphosa confirmed to me that M23 did not kill the soldiers from South Africa, FARDC did.

6. If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator. And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.

President Cyril Ramaphosa Wrote;

Fellow South Africans,

Following the recent intensification of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa has lost 13 brave soldiers who were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace.

The fighting is the result of an escalation by the rebel group M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

On behalf of the government and the people of our country, I express our sincerest condolences to their families, their loved ones and colleagues. We bow our heads in honor of their heroic and gallant fight for peace.

We honour and mourn them.

All necessary support is being provided to the families of the deceased and the families of the injured. The process to repatriate the remains of the deceased is underway.

The attacks on peacekeepers resulted in the deaths of SAMIDRC members from other troop contributing countries, namely, Malawi and Tanzania, as well members of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) brigade. We honour all the lives that were lost and pass our condolences to their families, governments and citizens. The situation in Goma and Sake, where our troops and their counterparts are stationed, remains very tense, volatile and unpredictable.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Angie Motshekga and the Chief of the SANDF Gen Rudzani Maphwanya and SAMIDRC Force Commander Maj Gen Monwabisi Dyakopu are working to ensure that the SAMIDRC forces remain well equipped and sufficiently supported during this critical mission.

We are concerned about the speculation about the state of our troops and the battle conditions. All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent.

South Africa’s military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state. The members of the South African National Defence Force that are in the DRC are part of both SADC and United Nations efforts to bring peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in the DRC. The presence of the SAMIDRC forces demonstrates a commitment of SADC member states to supporting the DRC in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability and ultimately, create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity.

We welcome the position that was recently adopted by the United Nations Security Council during its special sitting on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the reversal of territorial expansion by the M23, the exit of external forces from the DRC and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process.

The territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected in accordance with the United Nations Charter on the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states.

We call on all parties to this conflict to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements. We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity.

I thank you.

Rwandan President Kagame accuses Ramaphosa of lying over DRC conversations

Rwandan President Kagame accuses Ramaphosa of lying over DRC conversations

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has responded to media reports surrounding his recent conversations with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa about the situation in Eastern DRC, accusing the media a nd Ramaphosa of distorting the facts and misrepresenting the discussions.

He expressed concern that the public statements made by South African officials and Ramaphosa himself contained distortions, deliberate attacks, and lies.

Kagame pointed out that such discrepancies between private conversations and public statements reveal serious issues in how these important matters are being managed.

In his statement, Kagame clarified several points. He first emphasized that the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is a professional army, not a militia, as some media reports have suggested.

He also criticized the involvement of the Southern African Military Intervention in the DRC (SAMIDRC), which he described as a belligerent force rather than a peacekeeping one.

According to Kagame, SAMIDRC was authorized by SADC to engage in offensive combat operations alongside genocidal armed groups like the FDLR, which targets Rwanda and poses a direct threat to the country.

This intervention, he said, displaced the East African Community Regional Force, a true peacekeeping force, and contributed to the failure of the negotiation process.

Kagame further denied reports that President Ramaphosa had issued any “warning” to Rwanda, clarifying that the South African leader had only asked for support to ensure the South African troops had adequate supplies, which Rwanda was prepared to help communicate.

Kagame also confirmed that President Ramaphosa had acknowledged that it was the DRC’s Armed Forces (FARDC), not the M23 rebels, who were responsible for the deaths of the South African soldiers.

Finally, Kagame addressed South Africa’s role in the conflict, stating that while South Africa’s contribution to peace was welcome, it was not in a position to serve as a mediator or peacemaker in the DRC. He warned that if South Africa chose a confrontational approach, Rwanda would handle the situation accordingly.

Outgunning Congo – the evidence that shows Rwanda is backing M23 rebels

Protesters in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, have been burning portraits of Rwanda’s president and tearing up Rwandan flags as M23 rebels have taken control of most the eastern city of Goma.

Their fury is focused on Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who they accuse of backing the rebels – an accusation long made by the UN.

To put it bluntly, a group of UN experts maintains the Rwandan army is in “de facto control of M23 operations”, detailing how M23 recruits are trained under Rwandan supervision and supported by high-tech Rwandan weaponry.

Goma, which lies at the foot of a volcano near Lake Kivu, sits on the border with Rwanda. It is the capital of mineral-rich North Kivu province – and is an important trading and humanitarian hub and the base for the UN’s largest peacekeeping mission.

The city had also become a refuge for those fleeing the conflict between M23 fighters and the army that erupted again in late 2021 – with the population swelling to around two million.

They all face further turmoil as fighting erupted there on Sunday night with loud explosions echoing through the streets, which are now strewn with bodies. The exact circumstances of what is going on is unclear as phone lines are down and electricity and water supplies have been cut off. But the M23 seem to have captured most, if not all, of the city.

“There was no question that there are Rwandan troops in Goma supporting the M23,” said UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, though he added that it was it was difficult to tell the exact numbers on the ground in Goma.

Tellingly some Congolese army soldiers in Goma who surrendered on Monday, did so by crossing over the border into Rwanda.

Since the conflict begun, President Kagame has repeatedly denied any involvement in supporting the M23 rebels, who are well equipped, well armed and well trained.

However, this response has noticeably shifted as accusations continue to grow with “overwhelming evidence” showing Rwanda’s support for the rebel group, according to Richard Moncrief, International Crisis Group’s project director for the Great Lakes

“The tone has changed to justification for defensive measures,” he told the BBC. “It has become harder to deny Rwanda’s support for M23.”

On Sunday, Rwanda’s foreign ministry said in a statement: “This fighting close to the Rwandan border continues to present a serious threat to Rwanda’s security and territorial integrity, and necessitates Rwanda’s sustained defensive posture.”

It said it was concerned by “misguided or manipulative” statements that lacked context about the conflict.

For Kagame, the context all comes down to the Rwandan genocide that took place over 100 days in 1994.

The ethnic Hutu militia involved in killing up to 800,000 people – the vast majority from the Tutsi community – fled to what is now DR Congo, some forming the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

This rebel group is still active in the notoriously unstable eastern DR Congo – and still includes some of those responsible for the genocide.

Kagame, who headed the rebel Tutsi force that ended the killing more than three decades ago, sees this “genocidal militia” as an existential threat.

His government has twice invaded DR Congo, saying it wants to stop Hutu rebel groups from staging cross-border attacks.

Earlier this month he called out his Congolese counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi, for failing to deal with the FDLR and talk to the M23, saying this was exacerbating the conflict.

Mr Moncrief believes that the targeting of Goma is more about making a political point as he says the M23 does not need the city strategically as it already “controls many more lucrative areas”.

“It is President Kagame’s way of exerting power over who is in charge of North Kivu,” said the Great Lakes expert.

Rwanda accused the military governor of North Kivu, who was killed in fighting last week, of collaborating with the FDLR.

The discovery of this kind of high-level collaboration, experts agree, would have been like a red flag to a bull for Rwanda.

The M23’s origins are tied to these tensions – it is the latest incarnation of a rebel group that says it is fighting for the interests of the minority Tutsi community in eastern DR Congo.

Its first uprising more than a decade ago ended with a peace deal – when its fighters disarmed and mainly moved into camps in Uganda.

But three years ago, they began leaving the camps saying the deal was not honoured and within a couple months was seizing territory.

The UN peacekeeping mission – first deployed in 1999 – is not mandated to go on the offensive. Two regional forces – an East African one followed by a southern African one – specially deployed over the last few years at the request of Tshisekedi have failed to contain the M23.

This gives an indication of the M23’s sophisticated operations.

According to the UN group of experts, this includes five months of training at the M23’s main base in Tchanzu, hilly terrain not far from Rwanda’s border, that incorporates courses on theory and ideology and then practical elements including “war tactics”, “engagement rules” and “bush tactics”.

It said Rwandan officers were often at the camp, where recruits, including children, were brought – some joining up on a voluntary basis, others forced to do so in a systematic operation where local chiefs had to provide conscripts.

The experts said Sultani Makenga, who once fought for Kagame in the early 1990s in Rwanda and is now the M23’s military chief, attended some of the passing-out ceremonies between 25 September and 31 October 2024 that involved 3,000 recruits.

Rwanda’s spokesperson Yolande Makolo did not address the question of whether Rwandan officers were in the M23 camp but she did deny the charges about child soldiers, telling the BBC last year: “The claim about recruiting minors in camps is absurd, it’s blatant information warfare against Rwanda.”

However UN expert reports detail how the M23’s strength has grown since May when numbers were put at around 3,000.

The experts estimate that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan army troops are on the ground in DR Congo – saying it based this on authenticated photographs, drone footage, video recordings, testimonies and intelligence.

Captured M23 fighters said that the Rwandans were known as the “Friendly Force”, with the experts’ December report saying the English term was “generically used” even when interviewees were speaking in other languages.

They said these Rwandan special forces were there to train and support the rebels, and they did not interact with M23 regulars.

Rwanda’s ally Uganda, unhappy about another rebel group in DR Congo that threatens its security, has also been accused of helping the M23 – with its officers also spotted at Tchanzu. The UN experts say Uganda has also supplied weapons, hosted rebel leaders and allowed cross-border movements of M23 fighters – accusations Kampala denies.

Kagame recently expressed his frustration that after Tshisekedi came to power in 2019, his suggestion that Rwanda work alongside the Congolese army to tackle the FDLR had been rebuffed – unlike a joint offensive by DR Congo and Uganda against the Islamist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

This may explain the re-emergence of the M23 in 2021 – with evidence showing Rwanda’s backing of the group continues to grow.

Clémentine de Montjoye, senior researcher in the Africa division at Human Rights Watch, told the BBC that geolocated images placed Rwandan troops in Sake, a town just outside Goma last week.

The UN experts say the M23’s decision to capture the mining town of Rubaya, which fell to its forces in May, was “motivated by a strategic need to monopolise” the lucrative trade in coltan, which is used to make batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones.

Its December report says the group now collects at least $800,000 (£643,000) a month from the taxation of coltan in Rubaya – and ensures that around 120 tonnes of the coveted mineral is sent directly to Rwanda every four weeks.

It includes satellite images to show how a road was widened by September on the Congolese side of the Kibumba border crossing to allow access for heavy trucks that were previously unable to use the route into Rwanda.

Ms De Montjoye explained how the advanced weapons being used by the M23 were not available to any other of the numerous armed groups operating in eastern DR Congo.

“Earlier last year, we documented how Rwandan forces, and M23 had fired 122mm rockets, hitting displacement camps,” she told the BBC.

“It’s certainly with the kind of military support that the M23 has received that they’ve been able to make such an advance [on Goma].”

The UN experts have documented many such examples, including the use of Israeli-made anti-tank guided missiles

Mr Moncrief said the M23 was also using technology to interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) that had stopped the Congolese army from flying drones it had acquired from China.

The UN experts said the “spoofing and jamming” near areas controlled by M23 and the Rwandan army had also disrupted other aircraft.

President Kagame has dismissed these UN reports, pouring scorn on their “expertise” and saying they ignore many outrages committed in DR Congo to focus on “imaginary problems” created by the M23.

The East African Community – currently headed by Kenya’s president – is now trying to mediate, though Tshisekedi has said he will not attend a hastily organised emergency summit.

Observers say Rwanda’s president will be telling any mediator that the FDLR is the only subject up for discussion as he is adamant their presence makes DR Congo an unsafe neighbour – something he reiterated at a press conference earlier this month.

“Honestly, for the last 30 years if anyone wanted to understand what the problems are [in DR Congo] and what solutions should be, you don’t even need to be an expert,” Kagame said.

Rwandan soldiers escorted surrendering Congolese troops over the border into Rwanda on Monday

UN experts included photos of a short-range air defence system in their most recent report, saying three were spotted in M23 territory (Kibumba, Kitchanga and Karuba) in November being operated by soldiers using weaponry and backpacks similar to standard Rwandan army issue

PENENZO LAWILA MU 2022 KUTI NAPAPATA OSATI TOSAKILA VISWASWA KUTWALA KU PARLIAMENT, FORMER MP DORA SILIYA SAYS

By Mable Gershom Phiri

Former Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Dora Siliya, has expressed her desire to see peace between former President Edgar Lungu and current President Hakainde Hichilema.

Dr. Siliya, who has endorsed Severian Lungu, the UPND candidate for the Petauke by-election, said once voted into office, Mr. Lungu will continue working with the government for the development of the constituency.

She made the remarks yesterday in Petauke during her appearance on two radio stations, Pasme Radio and Explorers Radio.

Despite no longer being part of the cabinet, Dr. Siliya stated that she continues to represent the people of Petauke Central by engaging with the government on issues affecting the local communities.

“Petauke Central has been without representation for almost a year,” she noted, explaining her support for the UPND candidate.

She believes that Severian Lungu is the right candidate to help develop the constituency by collaborating with the current administration.

“In 2021, I urged that we should avoid sending someone unqualified to Parliament. We need a capable representative who will speak for the people of Petauke Central. Mr. Lungu is a strong candidate for this role and can deliver the development we need.” She further stated.

“Penenzo lawila mu 2021 kuti napapata osati tosakila viswaswa kutwala ku parliament, mwenzekuti nutala wenye sitetyo? Mwenze kuti nutala wenye. Mweo, tiyeni titwale munthu ku parliament kuti olo wanthu akamuwone, akanene kuti siyapa, zatwala munthu wanzeru wokonkholoka, owoneka bwino”.

Poyawana unga paliye nsoni, so we need to send to parliament someone who will speak for the people of Petauke central and Mr. Lungu is a right candidate to deliver development.

Dr. Siliya further emphasized that former President Edgar Lungu deserves the same respect as other former heads of state, including Zambia’s first Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda.

“Just as a widow mourns, there’s a need to reconcile and bring peace between former President Lungu and President Hichilema,” she concluded. “It’s important for the country’s progress that we work towards a peaceful relationship between our leaders.”

OPPOSITION CRYING FOUL DUE TO LACK OF CAMPAIGN MESSAGES – MARK SIMUUWE

January 29,2025

United Party for National Development (UPND) Consultant, Mark Simuuwe, has expressed that opposition political parties are struggling to present campaign strategies that would resonate with the electorate.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the UPND Media Team in Petauke Central Constituency, Mr. Simuuwe stated that the opposition has resorted to baseless complaints instead of offering constructive plans to the people.

“It is clear that the opposition lacks a viable message to present to the Zambian people, and this is why they have resorted to complaining rather than engaging in meaningful discourse,” he said.

In response to assertions made by Zambia Must Prosper leader Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF), who claimed that President Hakainde Hichilema has been controlling the affairs of the Patriotic Front (PF), Mr. Simuuwe dismissed these allegations as unfounded and challenged Mr. Fube to provide concrete evidence.

“These claims are completely unfounded,” he remarked. If Mr. Fube believes there is truth to his allegations, I challenge him to bring forth any proof. Without evidence, such statements only serve to tarnish the political landscape.”

He stated that such petty allegations reflect the political inadequacy of the opposition parties.

“The opposition’s constant focus on unfounded claims shows their inability to offer anything of substance to the people,” he added.

On the issue raised by Nakachinda, who called for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to cancel the by-elections due to claims of an unfavorable political atmosphere, Mr. Simuuwe emphasized that the Tonse Alliance is the real cause of instability in Petauke, citing recent violent attacks on UPND members.

Mr. Simuuwe further noted that it is the opposition who instigated these attacks on UPND supporters, questioning why they are now at the forefront complaining about the political climate.

“The opposition is the one that initiated the violence in Petauke. They are now attempting to shift blame to the UPND, which is both unfair and deceptive.”

He added that the opposition’s real goal is to buy more time to campaign, as they have already anticipated a victory for UPND candidate Severian Lungu.

According to Mr. Simuuwe, opposition parties have failed to sell their manifesto because they lack a coherent message to tell the Zambian people about their plans if given the mandate.

He further explained that the UPND government has excelled in implementing people-centered policies, including free education, increased Constituency Development Funds (CDF), Citizens Economic Empowerment (CEEC), social cash transfers, the Cash for Work program, emergency transfers, and the Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF).

Mr. Simuuwe concluded by stating that these significant interventions have placed the opposition at a disadvantage, prompting them to seek more time as they are unable to compete effectively.

“The UPND government has proven its commitment to the people through tangible policies, and this is what the opposition cannot match. This is why they are asking for more time to campaign—they are clearly struggling to compete with the progress we’ve made.” Said Mr Simuuwe.

GOVERNMENT SUSPENDS CHONGWE COUNCILLORS OVER ILLEGAL LAND ALLOCATIONS

January 29, 2025

LUSAKA – The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Hon Gary Nkombo has suspended all Chongwe Municipal Council councillors, including the mayor, for 90 days over allegations of illegal land allocations.

Announcing the decision at a press briefing this morning, Mr. Nkombo emphasized that the government, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, remains committed to upholding the rule of law while ensuring that development reaches all citizens.

Furthermore, he stressed that the government will not tolerate any misconduct in public office.

The suspension, which takes effect immediately, follows concerns about disorderly land administration in violation of the Urban and Regional Planning Act No. 3 of 2015.

Consequently, the move aims to restore order and ensure that land allocation processes are conducted transparently and legally.

Citing Section 56(1) of the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019, he exercised his authority to act against what he described as a failure to adhere to proper land management procedures.

As a result, the councillors will be unable to perform their functions for the duration of the suspension.

To restore order and conduct investigations, the minister has appointed Mr. Charlston Hamulyata, a public officer, as the Local Government Administrator for Chongwe Municipal Council.

In addition, his mandate includes overseeing council operations, facilitating policy decisions, and leading a task force comprising the Zambia Police, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Drug Enforcement Commission, and the Ministry of Lands.

This team will investigate all allegations and report its findings within the stipulated period. Moreover, the minister assured the public that decisive action would be taken based on the task force’s findings.

He further commended the press for their role in keeping the public informed, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in local governance.

Ultimately, the outcome of the investigations is expected to shape future policies on land administration in Zambia.

These Black retirees in Philly meet every week to sew period pads for women in Africa and Caribbean

0

The Pan-African Sisterhood Health Initiative (P.A.S.H.I.) brings joy to people all across the world by creating reusable, washable cotton menstruation pads for girls and women in Africa and the Caribbean.

Maisha Sullivan-Ongoza, one of the founders, told The Philadelphia Inquirer, “We don’t call it period poverty, we call it menstrual hygiene management. We use 100% cotton fabric. We researched and found a commercial product called Zorb, a 100% compressed cotton that absorbs liquid that is seven to eight times its weight. Then we used a laminated cotton material as the water-resistant layer.”

She added, “I just love the impact it’s having. They’re not using something that’s unhealthy. They are not open to [sexual] predators taking advantage of them [in exchange for buying pads]. They have something so they can manage their periods with dignity.”

P.A.S.H.I. members meet every Wednesday at the Ujima Friends Peace Center in North Philadelphia, driven by a mission, sewing machines, and Black women. The majority of the volunteers are retired women. They are or were college professors, teachers, CEOs, nurses, health administrators, social workers, doctors, environmentalists, skilled poets, artists, and quilters.

One of the volunteers, Jackie Wilkins, expressed, “They are all my friends now, and it’s a really strong sisterhood.”

P.A.S.H.I. was first started in 2019 as a project of the Sankofa Artisans Guild, which is made up of jewelry makers, quilters, woodworkers, and other artists and crafters. Not all P.A.S.H.I. volunteers are guild members, and not all guild members are P.A.S.H.I. members.

“We started small, with no funding. Just goodwill,” Sullivan-Ongoza said.

According to Sullivan-Ongoza, the guild has been undertaking a social justice project every year for many years. As part of that effort, the group regularly provided or sent educational supplies to a school in The Gambia. But in 2019, school officials informed them that female students had a particular need for menstruation pads.

“They told us that girls often missed school for days when they had their periods. And if they stained their clothing while at school, they were teased and bullied,” Sullivan-Ongoza said.

According to her, certain girls fall prey to men who promise to buy them commercially made pads in exchange for having sex.

In September 2019, a 14-year-old girl from Kenya committed suicide after being “period shamed” for staining her school clothes. That’s when Sullivan-Ongoza realized she and the quilters needed to use their expertise to manufacture reusable pads.

“At first, we thought it was going to be our social justice project for one year,” she said. “But the demand was so great. People were asking us to make them from all across the continent.”

However, Sullivan-Ongoza, an environmentalist, stated that the organization is not interested in delivering commercially produced pads similar to those used in the United States due to the “forever chemicals” in them.

Every individual plays a distinct role for the majority of the day. People who don’t sew have other responsibilities: Some cut fabric for the “wings,” which are butterfly-shaped swaths of material attached on Zorb pads.

DRC’s Goma Hospitals Overwhelmed As Violence Escalates, Dead Bodies In The Streets

The city of Goma, located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has descended into chaos, with streets littered with lifeless bodies and hospitals struggling to cope with the overwhelming number of casualties.

The violent clashes erupted after Rwanda-backed M23 rebels entered the city, escalating a decades-long conflict in the region. According to reports from the United Nations (UN) and humanitarian agencies, the situation has rapidly worsened, leaving both civilians and medical facilities in dire conditions.

Goma’s Struggling Healthcare System Under Extreme Pressure
Hospitals in Goma have been completely overwhelmed with patients suffering from gunshot wounds and injuries caused by shrapnel. Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), confirmed reports of extensive casualties, highlighting the dire state of the city’s healthcare facilities.

“Hospitals in Goma are reportedly overwhelmed, struggling to manage the influx of wounded individuals,”

In addition to the physical wounds, disturbing reports have emerged of sexual violence perpetrated by armed fighters, adding to the city’s already critical situation. The healthcare workers, many of whom are risking their lives, have also been targeted, with reports indicating that some have been shot at while trying to assist the injured. Babies, too, have become innocent victims of the crossfire, further intensifying the tragedy.

Reports of Severe Injuries and Overcrowded Hospitals
Adelheid Marschang, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) emergency response coordinator for the DRC, shared alarming figures, stating that over 600 individuals had been treated in Goma’s hospitals just days earlier. The overwhelming majority of these patients had sustained gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) echoed similar concerns, with Patrick Youssef, its regional director for Africa, reporting that one of the organization’s hospitals had received over 100 patients in a single day, many suffering from head injuries and chest trauma caused by mortars and explosive shrapnel.

Youssef further emphasized the strain on healthcare facilities:

“The hospital is completely overwhelmed. Patients are waiting in the corridors, and the hospital parking lot has been converted into a triage area.”

The significant rise in pediatric injuries, especially among young children, is also deeply concerning, with many of these children being severely wounded in the violence.

The Humanitarian Crisis Worsens Amid Looting and Food Shortages
Alongside the violence, Goma is also grappling with widespread looting, which has compounded the already dire humanitarian situation. Both the ICRC and the World Food Programme (WFP) have reported that vital medical supplies and food stores have been looted in recent days. This looting threatens to further exacerbate the food crisis in Goma, where access to basic provisions has already been severely limited.

According to Shelley Thakral, a spokesperson for the WFP, the ongoing violence could lead to even more severe food shortages in the region.

“The duration of the violence will play a crucial role in determining how long food supplies can continue flowing into the city. If the situation persists, Goma could face a significant humanitarian crisis, with many residents unable to access food and essential services,” Thakral warned.

Keefe D Involved In Prison Fight While Awaiting Tupac Murder Trial

Keefe D has been at the center of one of the most infamous cases in all of hip hop. He was charged with the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in 2023, and will stand trial in March.

The criminal has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. Unfortunately, he has not had an easy time behind bars. Keefe was recently involved in a nasty prison fight. TMZ reported that the inmate, born Duane Davis, fought with a fellow inmate at Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas. He was subsequently hit with another criminal charge.

The outlet doesn’t state which inmate started the fight, but details the severity of it. Keefe D reportedly engaged in “mutual combat by grappling and throwing closed fist strikes.” He also put his fellow inmate in a headlock.

It took a prison guard spraying both inmates with pepper spray for the fight to be broken up. Keefe D is being charged with battery by the other inmate. He told officers that the incident was not his fault, however. The murder suspect alleges he was merely “standing his ground.”

Keefe D has maintained his innocence regarding the Tupac murder. That said, the career criminal has made some alarming statements about the rapper over the years. In his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend, Keefe made it clear that Tupac got his just desserts. “Tupac chose the wrong game to play and the wrong n*gas to play with,” he asserted. “Suge and them should have done a better job of protecting that dude because they knew who the fck we were and the kind of sh*t we were capable of.”

Keefe also hinted at his involvement in Tupac’s death during a VLAD TV interview. The host asked the current inmate who shot Tupac. He refused to answer, but suggested that he knew. “I’m not gonna go into details on that one,” Keefe explained. “Keep the streets, homie.” The Tupac murder trial was initially set for November, 2024, but was pushed back. It’s set to begin on March 17.

Rapper 50 Cent sued for assault by photographer

50 Cent is facing a lawsuit alleging he directed his entourage to strike a photographer with an SUV door, causing the man to fall off his electric scooter and sustain injuries.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, is being brought by Guadalupe De Los Santos, represented by attorney Gloria Allred.

According to the lawsuit, the incident occurred on September 11, following 50 Cent’s book signing at The Grove in Los Angeles. De Los Santos claims he was riding his scooter and filming when 50 Cent’s SUV pulled up at a red light. The vehicle’s front passenger door allegedly swung open “suddenly and forcefully,” striking him on his left side and knocking him to the ground.

De Los Santos asserts there was no reason for the door to open except to hit him and alleges that 50 Cent ordered someone inside the SUV to carry out the act. He claims the incident left him with bodily injuries, an inoperable scooter, mounting medical bills, and loss of earnings due to missed work.

In response, 50 Cent’s attorney issued a statement to TMZ, saying, “Mr. Jackson has neither been served with nor seen a filed copy of a lawsuit filed by Ms. Allred’s firm. However, if and when such a frivolous claim is filed and served, rest assured that Mr Jackson’s legal team will swiftly move to dismiss the matter and seek the maximum costs, fees, sanctions, and other remedies that are available under law.”

The attorney also emphasized that 50 Cent is not alleged to have been the driver or the person who opened the door, adding, “Based upon the leaked reports presumably by Ms Allred, Mr Jackson is not alleged to be the driver of the vehicle or even the individual who the Plaintiff paparazzi alleges opened the door as he charged a vehicle as it drove away from the bookstore.”

TMZ clarified that the lawsuit was not leaked but filed publicly.

50 Cent addressed the lawsuit on social media, posting a photo of himself with Gloria Allred and writing, “The moment I realized I don’t like lawyers, Gloria you should know better, chase a different ambulance.” The case has yet to proceed, and no court date has been set for the matter.

Chinese AI app DeepSeek was hit by large scale malicious attacks after US tech firms lost $1trn overnight

The Chinese AI app DeepSeek has ceased operations as of last night, reportedly due to a technical issue. The company behind the app restricted new sign-ups to phone numbers within China, effectively barring international users from registering.

This move appears to be an attempt to limit access to the app amid widespread interest.

A banner on the app’s web chat confirmed that DeepSeek’s services had been targeted by “large-scale malicious attacks,” though it did not specify the origin of the attacks. Earlier in the day, the start-up experienced outages on its website after its AI assistant became the top-rated free app on the US Apple App Store. These disruptions marked the latest in a series of challenges for DeepSeek, which has rapidly gained popularity.

The app’s unexpected success has drawn attention from the tech world, with DeepSeek’s AI models perceived to be on par with those from US-based giants like OpenAI and Meta. This has led to a significant impact on the US tech sector, with companies losing $1 trillion in valuation due to concerns that Chinese AI could surpass US innovations.

Founded in 2023, DeepSeek has emerged as a prominent player in China’s AI landscape, an area that was once thought to be lagging behind US developments. DeepSeek’s models have drawn attention for being much cheaper to operate compared to their US counterparts. This has led to increased scrutiny of US export controls on chips, particularly as DeepSeek’s research team claims to have trained their models using Nvidia’s H800 chips at a cost of under $6 million.

While the effectiveness of these export controls has been questioned, the company behind DeepSeek remains largely unknown, with little information available about its operations. Despite the ongoing disruptions, the success of DeepSeek’s models has sparked praise from US industry leaders, including Alexandr Wang of Scale AI, who described the app’s success as a “wake-up call for America.” Some experts, however, believe the rise of DeepSeek could benefit US competitors by driving cost efficiency and open-source research in AI development.

Although DeepSeek’s rise has triggered concerns about China’s potential to outpace the US in AI, experts like Meta’s Yann LeCun emphasize that the real takeaway is the power of open-source models, suggesting that the competition is about access to open research rather than a shift in global AI dominance. Despite these observations, much about DeepSeek’s operations and its future remains unclear.
