Its another Champions League title I want, focus not on Ballon d’Or, – Vinícius Jr.

Vinícius Júnior has brushed aside rumours suggesting he could clinch the Ballon d’Or, emphasising his priority to assist Real Madrid in securing their 15th Champions League title.

Named the player of the match in Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League semifinal second-leg triumph over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the Brazil international said: “Everyone talks about the Ballon d’Or but I’m very calm. I want to win another Champions League with this team.

“I can do great things this season and then I have to go with Brazil [for the Copa América]. I always think about the teams first and then me.

“We were able to place the best team in the world in another final. We have 25 stars in the team, all of us have worked hard to achieve our aim which is to go to London [for the Champions League final] and win La Liga. We have won La Liga; we are going to London.”

On June 1, Madrid is set to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at London’s Wembley Stadium. Vinícius, 23, is considered one of the top candidates to inherit Lionel Messi’s Ballon d’Or title.

He showcased his talent by netting a hat trick in Madrid’s victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final last January, and his contributions with 13 goals played a pivotal role in Los Blancos’ LaLiga triumph.

In the Champions League, his performance has been remarkable, scoring five goals and providing five assists in nine appearances.

“I came here [to Madrid] when I was young, 18,” he said. “I was criticised a lot and that made me work a lot more in order to be ready when the time came… I train every day to improve. I’m now here, in another final.

“I’ve never worked in a group that is as united as ours is this season. This group works a lot.”
Vinícius also paid tribute to Spanish forward Joselu, whose two late goals put Madrid in the final.

“[Against Bayern on Wednesday] Joselu came on in the 81st minute and scored two goals,” he said. “This is a reward for Joselu. He has always worked to do the best for the team and never complained when he didn’t play. This proves what our group is.”

Boeing 737 at an airport in Senegal catches fire and goes off runway

A plane, carrying 85 people, crashed at the airport in Dakar, Senegal. 10 people were hurt according to the Transport Minister and an airline safety group.

“Our plane is on fire,” wrote musician Cheick Siriman Sissoko on Facebook. He posted a picture of passengers sliding down emergency slides at night while flames covered one side of the plane.

Transport Minister El Malick Ndiaye said that on Wednesday the Air Senegal flight, operated by TransAir, was going to Bamako, Mali. There were 79 passengers, two pilots, and four cabin crew on board. The airport opened again on Thursday morning after being closed at night.

The people who were hurt were taken to the hospital, while the rest were brought to a hotel to relax. Boeing told the airlines to ask for a comment about the situation.

This was the third time a Boeing airplane was in trouble this week. On Thursday, 190 people were safely taken off a plane in Turkey because one of its tires burst when it landed at a southern airport. This information was shared by Turkey’s transportation ministry.

The company has been facing a lot of problems since a door plug blew out of a Boeing 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight in January, causing a big hole in the plane. In February, Boeing was told by the Federal Aviation Administration to come up with a plan in 90 days to fix its plane-building problems and make sure its planes are safe.

The incident has made people look very closely at Boeing because two crashes with Boeing 737 Max planes in 2018 and 2019 killed 346 people. Around twelve family members of people who died in the second plane crash want the US government to bring back a criminal fraud charge against the company. They believe Boeing broke the terms of a 2021 agreement.

In April, a person who used to work for Boeing, Sam Salehpour, told the government that the company was making airplanes too fast and not doing it right. This could make the airplanes break.

The Aviation Safety Network keeps track of plane crashes and said that the plane was a Boeing 737-38J. Pictures of the broken plane in a field with foam to put out fires were posted on X, which used to be called Twitter. One engine seems to have broken and a wing is also broken according to the pictures.

ASN is part of a group called Flight Safety Foundation. This group wants to make sure that air travel is safe and keeps track of accidents.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema stands no chance of retaining power in the forthcoming General election in 2026, opposition All Peoples Congress leader Nason Msoni has charged.

Commenting on former vice president Enoch Kavindele’s statement suggesting that President Hichilema is doing well, Msoni said Kavindele was misleading the Head of State.

“We sincerely hope that the former Vice president of the Republic Mr. Enock kavindele will use his immense political experience to immediately offer counselling on site to President Hakainde Hichilema immediately after losing the 2026 elections.

We are surprised that Mr Kavindele a seasoned political operator hasn’t picked up the vibrations and the movements on the ground in favour of regime change,” he said.

Msoni said what was more shocking is the level and extent of deception people like Kavindele were drawing in helping President Hichilema lose the 2026 election.

“Truth be told Mr Hichilema stands no chance in a million years of being re-elected back into office for a second term as the majority voters and citizens view him as a political disaster. He has miserably failed in all key area of leadership. So for Mr Kavindele to be insisting that Hichilema is not losing the 2026 polls, in a way this amounts to living in denial from the political reality that is obtaining on the ground. It is undeniable fact that the majority of our citizens are frustrated and angry against the failure of this government to deliver deliverables as promised,” he said.

A former UPND – Alliance partner in the 2021 elections, Msoni has urged Kavindele to prepare himself to consor and mourn with President Hichilema as the situation on the ground speaks the exit of the UPND – Alliance.

“We do hope that Mr Kavindele will make himself available to offer the much needed counselling to Mr Hichilema soon after losing the 2026 polls. Undoubtedly a good number of Mr Hichilema’s supporters will definitely have disappeared at that point in time. No sitting President in modern times with such negative showings and narratives has gone on to win a second term of office. It is fair and proper to prepare the man for a possible loss of the 2026 elections than to feed him with false hope of winning the elections. Clearly that will never happen,” he said.

He has warned of an electoral Tsunami coming which will hit the UPND badly.

“Certainly there is an electoral tsunami on the way coming ahead of the 2026 elections. The man has literally fought everybody including the church. “So how do you win elections “. His treacherous behaviour and betrayal of those who previously campaigned for him will certainly come back to haunt him. In a nutshell it will help Mr Hichilema to stand down and serve himself from a very embarrassing and humiliating defeat as the electoral tide is certainly against him. This environment is highly hostile and charged and cannot sustain a stolen election,” Msoni warns.

Fellow Citizens,

This morning, I along with a few of my colleagues went into our Lusaka Central Business District (CBD) just to have a feel of how our traders are fairing with this apparent high cost of doing business. While we toured the CBD, we came across a woman trader selling tomatoes and onions by the roadside and stopped to buy some for our homes, I was personally amazed by how high the prices of commodities have become under the current regime.

When I asked the woman why one tomato was costing not less than k5, she replied, ” Daddy vintu vonse vadula, ma order nayo Ku Soweto uku mitengo bana lunda (Sir, prices of everything have gone up).” Please find time to go through the town centre and Soweto Market, and you will be shocked.”

Taking up her challenge, I decided to pass through Soweto Market and Lusaka’s Central Business District (CBD) to see for myself. True to her words, prices of commodities are indeed very high for ordinary Zambians and something drastic has to be done by those in authority to ensure that our people’s lives are made much more bearable than the apparent situation.

However, my word of encouragement to all entrepreneurs, whether small, medium, or large, is this: don’t lose hope; continue working hard fikabalansa, fikapanga sense.

As I reflect on my visit to the CBD today I urge all fellow citizens to continue to support all local businesses, no matter how small or big they may be, because that’s how we will impact our country’s economic growth by empowering each other.

The UKA Dribble is a Lesson in Political Strategy

In the wild arena of politics, the adage “strategy is key” echoes with unforgiving clarity.

Politics is a territory where the stakes are high, and the consequences of missteps can be dire.

The rise and fall of the original United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) serve as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of political warfare.

From its idea’s inception, UKA captured the imagination of the masses with its promise of a united front against the status quo.

Coupled with the high cost of living and the growing recentiment against the UPND government, its vision resonated deeply with the many disillusioned citizens.

Yet, despite the fervent support it garnered, UKA faltered where it mattered most – in the area of political strategy.

In politics, timing is everything. UKA’s fatal flaw lay in its over excitement and the premature unveiling to the public, neglecting the crucial armor of legal status or registration.

The enthusiasm it generated among the populace proved to be its own undoing, as it emboldened the powers that be to swiftly snuff out its nascent flame and correctly so, this is politics and no child play.

UPND will not easily give up power after spending more than 20 years in opposition, it would be catastrophic for the party and its members. So the sooner the opposition are clear on this, the better for them and thier strategy.

The failure to secure legal status before basking in the limelight was a strategic blunder of catastrophic proportions for UKA and it is surprising that, such legal minds of Sakwiba Sikota and team could make such a grave error.

It handed ammunition to adversaries who wasted no time in exploiting UKA’s vulnerability.

In the ruthless game of politics, such oversights are akin to laying one’s neck on the chopping block and daring fate to intervene and it has indeed.

The demise of the original UKA serves as a cautionary tale for political aspirants and seasoned veterans alike.

It underscores the importance of meticulous planning and foresight in navigating the treacherous waters of political maneuvering.

In the words of Sun Tzu, “Know thyself, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.”

The current rumors of a rebranded fake entity masquerading under the familiar guise of UKA (Unfied Knowledge for Africa) serve as a grim reminder of the consequences of folly.

While some may view this as political persecution, others see it for what it truly is – a cleaver maneuvering by UPND and a strategy failure by UKA.

Has UKA planned and excuted its strategy well, the public would have been spared the nonsense and drama we found ourselves in.

But let us not be deceived by smoke and mirrors. The old adage rings true – “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me, so it’s back again to the drawing board for the original UKA team and it’s not too late.

The lessons of UKA’s downfall are writ large for all who dare to challenge the status quo – keep your cards close to your chest, bide your time, and strike when the iron is hot and have unquestionable legal standing.

So, farewell to the old UKA, a casualty of its own impetuosity.

…Zambia is facing a very dark period but UPND Government is focusing all its energies on fighting its political opponents…

They have hatched a plan, to prevent the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) from using the acronym UKA.

They are registering the Unified Knowledge of Africa party (UKA).

I wish President Hakainde Hichilema and his team devoted similar energy to resolving the crises of the country.

The country is facing a serious economic crisis, volatile exchange rate and rising inflation rate.

Zambians are experiencing the highest cost of living in recent memory, with essential foodstuffs such as mealie-meal 25kg costing K360 (when they found the price at K120), fuel at K34 (it was at K17), 2kg sugar K70 (when it was at K25).

Prices of other goods and services such as electricity, cooking oil, e.t.c have all gone up.

Their solution to all this is harsh and archaic monetary and fiscal policies, reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and foreign Direct Investment.

We have had multiple and dangerous health outbreaks including cholera, dysentery, typhoid, anthrax, malaria (yes there is an outbreak despite it being endemic) and Syphilis.

We have legacy issues that have gone worse, such as poverty ( now standing at 60%, the highest in 15 years) youth unemployment and the disease burden.

Zambia’s HIV prevalence rate stands at 11.1 percent with an estimated 1.4 million people living with HIV and 1.1 million people on treatment.

Currently the country is facing load-shedding, the worst since 2015. Yet the country has achieved more installed generation capacity.

But our dear brother focuses every ounce of his energy on fighting the Patriotic Front, and the Opposition in general.

He is keen to stay in power at all cost.

He has devised and is engaged in dirty schemes at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), National Registration Department, Judiciary, Parliament, ZNBC and others to enhance his chances for re-election.

He has made tribal and regional appointments to all key positions in the country to attempt to get a vice-grip in affairs affecting the 2026 elections.

Can someone tell him that his biggest opponent is the hunger and the economy and the people of Zambia, and not the Opposition.

The solution is; Deliver, deliver, deliver.

Below is a message from my family to who this may concern.

As family of Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, we are now concerned with the treatment that he is receiving from state organs with regards his health. We believe that this is so, because of orders from the executive and a few individuals holding absolute authority and are directing officers from other branches of government to carry out their desires and overlook his human rights to receive medical care, whether outside the country or within by showing callousness to his condition.

Despite the ACC denying him exit to a pre-arranged appointment and for medical treatment in South Africa,at KKIA, they now seek and have issued a bench warrant to have him incarcerated just when he is being attended to with a grave condition in a local health facility.

This lack of empathy from all involved in this scheme is scandalous and stinks of not providing justice but to have him suffer for more than the allegation laid on him in the court and unfortunately its ‘ he who pays the piper calls the tune’ and they seem to ignore that soon and very soon, things a bound to change and matters that were done out of appeasement will come and haunt them.

GBM, is an established citizen and not a flight risk and has always been a patriotic member of our country with visible investments in this very country and not forgetting that he did popularize certain personalities and organizations using his hard earned resources and his popularity too, even in no go areas that were evidently pronounced.

We as family, will no longer sit back and keep quiet at the whims of those playing the pipe continue to be inhumane and those dancing to the tune to throw away logic and constitutionalism. Enough is indeed enough.

..we have said the sophistication involved in plundering national resources by President Hichilema’s team is unprecedented…

It is not a secret.

President Hakainde Hichilema has stashed most of his wealth in tax havens as reported by various international oversight institutions and investigative journalists such as the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists(ICIJ).

Now Zambia is seeking Diplomatic Relations with tax haven countries Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Republic of Panama and the Saint Vincent and Grenadines.

This is according to a decision made by President Hichilema’s 8th cabinet meeting held on Monday, 6th May 2024 at State House.

This will likely be followed by tax treaties. A DTA (double tax agreement) may require tax to be levied by the country of residence, and be exempt in the country in which it arises.

Despite making money in Zambia, if an investor can prove residence in these tax havens, they may not be required to pay taxes in Zambia as this will amount to double taxation.

In 2017, President Hichilema was identified as one of the 120 politicians across the world that have used tax havens for tax dodging purposes.

The Paradise Papers, numbering 13.4-million leaked documents from Appleby’s offices in Mauritius, have revealed how the rich evaded millions of dollars in tax and kept questionable business decisions under wraps.

Mr Hichilema is said to have become a Director of a Bermuda company known as AfNat Resources Ltd.

Bermuda is a UK island in the North Atlantic Ocean and is widely known as the World’s worst corporate tax heaven with zero personal income tax and corporate tax until 2016.

In March 2006, Mr Hichilema who is listed in the leaked documents as a Zambian corporate executive with interests in mining, finance and other industries resigned in August 2016, according to Appleby’s records.

Appleby is a law firm that claims to be one of the largest providers of offshore legal services.

Mr Hichilema’s AfNat Resources was incorporated in 2005 and explored for nickel and other metals in Zambia and other African countries.

It was listed on London’s alternative investment market until 2010 when it was purchased by Canadian mining company Axmin for about $14 million.

As on April, 14, 2010 AfNat Resources Limited was acquired by Axmin Inc.

LOADSHEDDING: GOVT AND ZESCO ARE NOT BEING HONEST

It is clear that Zesco and Mr Hichilema’s government are not being truthful on loadshedding and the manner they’re managing or taking away the generated units from the national grid.

On this matter, both Zesco and the government have plainly been exposed. They have been uncovered as liars, deceptive and fraudulent people. No wonder there is a yawning credibility gap at the moment between their public announcements and what is actually obtaining on the ground.

It is evident that the people are frustrated, agitated and have lost respect, trust and believability for them on account of how they’re dealing with the loadshedding situation. There are a lot of lies, unprofessionalism, and under-reporting of the situation. To expose them even further, we demand answers to the following questions:

(1) Why is Zesco not following the loadshedding schedule?

(2) Why do we have so many high levels of unplanned outages and claims of breakdown or maintenance from Zesco? Isn’t this a subtle way of extending loadshedding hours?

(3) Why are they refuting that the loadshedding period is now beyond the announced 8 hours and has risen to between 10 – 12 hours a day? Why can’t they admit that the loadshedding stages or hours have significantly changed?

(4) In April 2024, Zesco signed a power deal with EDM – Mozambique’s state-owned power utility – to enable them to import 90 megawatts of power. So why has loadshedding hours increased if there is an addition of 90 megawatts of power to the national grid as claimed?

(5) Zesco also claimed that the announced 8 hours loadshedding period was worked out based on the water allocation at Kariba, which is supposed to be rationalized up to December. But if this is the case, why the increase in loadshedding hours and power importation, if according to their estimates our water levels or allocation at Kariba were supposed to run us through to December? Does this mean we are generating more units for export and in the process reducing our allocation beyond the estimates done?

(6) If we follow Zesco’s estimates, more loadshedding period means less water being drained or utilized at Kariba, so where are they taking the units they’re generating? Can they release the figures of how much generated units they’re taking out of the national grid and who the beneficiaries are?

(7) It is common knowledge that during winter, the national grid is strained due to excess demand. And we are heading into winter. When will Zesco and this government come out in the open and admit that the electricity crisis will actually get worse? Why can’t they tell people the truth?

While in opposition, Mr Hichilema blamed loadshedding on poor leadership, castigating the then administration not to hide under climate change or unpredictable weather patterns. But under his watch, Zambia is witnessing the worst loadshedding in history, and they don’t seem to have a solution.

People are hopeless and helpless as they see their businesses and lives being destroyed every single day. Let Mr Hichilema and his government stop lying or deceiving the people about loadshedding because they have lamentably failed to manage this crisis. Let them tell the people the truth.

The recent increase in electricity tariffs has created a lot of panic among members of the public. Here is the truth:
1) In 2023, ERB reduced the tariff for consumers who use below 100 units by 7 ngwee per unit. In 2024, ERB has increased the tariff for this category by 4 ngwee per unit, meaning that this category is still saving by 3 ngwee per unit. It is wrong to say this category consisting of the most vulnerable has been made worse off. The tariff is still below where it was before last year’s revision.


2) In 2023, ERB reduced electricity for consumers who use 300 to 500 units by 40 ngwee per unit. In 2024, ERB has increased the tariff for this category by 15 ngwee per unit, meaning consumers in this category are saving 25 ngwee per unit. It is wrong to say that this category has been made worse by the recent adjustment as the tariff is still below where it was before last year’s revision.


3) In 2023, ERB reduced the tariff for small businesses who use less than 100 units by 40 ngwee per unit. In 2024, ERB has increased by 11 ngwee per unit, meaning that the small businesses in this category are saving 29 ngwee per unit. It is wrong to say the small businesses have been made worse. Their tariff is still below where it was before last years price revision.
4) In 2023, ERB reduced the tariff for medium businesses who use 100 to 300 units by 60 ngwee per unit. In 2024, ERB has increased tariff for these businesses by 20 ngwee per unit, meaning that this category is saving 40 ngwee per unit. It is wrong to say these businesses have been made worse as the tariff is still below where they were before last year’s revision.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

It means that electricity tariffs for many customer categories who are the most vulnerable are still in a reduced position when you net off last year’s reductions and this year’s upward adjustments.

HAS GOVERNMENT DELIVERED ON ITS PROMISE TO REDUCE THE TARIFFS?

1) Yes, for several customer categories, the net effect of the reductions received last year and this year’s upward adjustment show that the tariffs have been reduced.
2) The burden of new electricity tariffs has been shifted to consumers who use a lot of electricity above 500 units. Both last year and this year, the trend is the same for this category. There is also one category that uses 100 units to 300 units, which has a slight upward movement.

In conclusion, some of the customers who are calling and expressing their desperation have not been made worse at all compared with where they were before change of government. The overall position for many of the customers’ categories is that they are still paying less than what they were paying before last year’s tariff adjustment. There have been far big tariff adjustments before, like the 113% hike and the 75% hike of 2019- the last hike. The reason this is happening is to improve the viability of the Zambian Electricity Industry in order to attract more investors. We desperately and urgently need investors in the sector.

1. Walking around surrounded by a battalion of bodyguards. When asked to preach, one body guard carries his/her bible, another a water, another a towel and another a notebook, escorting him/her to the pulpit. Two or more remain on the pulpit while you preach. What became of your security dude? The more you rise, the more God becomes unreliable to provide security.

2. Excessive obsession with big titles. When introducing him/her, you risk a public rebuke if you don’t call out the titles. Mightiest prophet, Chief Apostle, Senior Arch Bishop, the Mighty man of God, prophet to the nations, Reverend, Senior pastor…just but to name a few. Why all these stuff?

3. Obsession with displaying machines they drive and houses they live in. This is normally disguised as for the glory of God yet it is for the ego of the man of God. It is as though the affluence and money validate a man of God.

4. We must be reminded constantly of countries flown to. Space has to be created within the preaching to accommodate the trip to the USA, or the UK. Occasionally there is no connection between the sermon and the trip to the UK. Sometimes accent has to be altered to prove the point.

5. Obsession with very distinct “priestly” attire. The choice of colour and design and other accompaniments has to make a clear distinction between the man of God and others. Validation is derived from these. These sometimes extends to hairstyles for men.

6. Sermons revolve around God blessing you so that your enemies are shown dust. It is to revenge against past hurts. It is about proving a point to those who laughed at you.

7. Any challenge/questioning on the man of God; he will pull a ‘touch thee not the anointed one of God.’ Threats and curses become the order of the day because of a serious identity crisis. The major tool here is control and instil fear. And you had better not leave that church. You will be cursed with a curse.

8. He is so afraid of anyone else shining in the ministry that he will just not easily give out an opportunity for someone else in the congregation to preach. Competition is the driving force. The principle is that you should never outshine your boss. Woe unto you if you praise someone other than him. And if you happen to plant a church in the same town, it is met with real war. It will be interpreted to mean you have come to fight the man of God.

9. He will constantly be reminding all who care to listen that he is the man of God of the house; he is the priest of the house and without him you cannot go anywhere. That he is the only one anointed by God. Very insecure in his calling.

10. There is an obsession to be seen to be rubbing shoulders with other “mighty” men of God; top political leaderships in the country; etc. Validation for all he/she does comes from here. You will hear several unnecessary mentions of how they shared a platform with so and so man of God; how he took tea wherever with a certain government official bla bla bla. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking tea with politicians or sharing a platform with so and so; the problem becomes when validation is derived from this.

The PF and its allied members in the UKA has suffered yet another political blow as one of its strong man, former PF Western Province, Charles Mututwa has rejoined the ruling UPND.

In his remarks, Mr MUTUTWA, who defected to the PF in prior to the 2021 general elections, cited the numerous economic strides that the UPND government has made in its first 2 years, 7 months in the office as the major reason for rejoining the party.

He further said the strong love and grassroots support that the UPND was experiencing, let alone President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to provide the much needed economic emancipation to the country’s masses was another reason for him to join the ruling party.

He also said he would endeavor all he could to make sure that the party grows and remains rooted.

Speaking when she welcomed Mututwa back to the party at the UPND Secretariate this afternoon, Ms Imenda stressed said the UPND was a party that ran an open door policy that allowed every Zambia to be part of the movement.

She also encouraged UPND members to welcome the new member with open hands, adding that there was no new member in the ruling party.

She also rubbished assertions that the former PF was on its way of coming back to form Government, stressing that the UKA establishment was non-entity that has no political stamina.

During the same event, Alex Mulenga Chewe, also from the former ruling party, PF, also rejoined the ruling party.

Mr Chewe was prior to his defection to then ruling PF a member of the Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba aka GBM-led faction.

ZESCO refutes Mapani’s impending dismissal

The board of state-owned power utility Company ZESCO has reportedly resolved to fire the Utility Managing Director Victor Mapani for his alleged inability to come up with innovative short to medium term solutions to the ongoing electricity crisis in Zambia.

A source at ZESCO who asked for their names to be withheld revealed to the Zambian Business Times – ZBT that the board at ZESCO has passed a vote of no confidence in the CEO Mapani and that he will be fired unless outside interference saves him.

The move follows mounting pressure on government over continued energy crisis in both fuel and electricity in the country. Fuel prices continue to rise while electricity deficit deepens with more increments expected.

This twin energy crisis has already claimed two victims with the removal of the ERB board chairperson Raynolds Bowa and placement on forced leave of the regulators Director General Yohane Mulabe after reportedly approving double upward adjustments of fuel pump prices and the about 10% increase in electricity tariffs without consultations with top government bosses.

Both ERB, ZESCO, and the parent Ministry of Energy have been heavily criticized by industry players, experts and concerned citizens alike, who accuse them of being out of touch with the realities on the ground and insisting on policies that continue to hurt both businesses and households.

According to an impeccable sources close to the matter, the ZESCO board of directors decided to part ways with Mapani due to his failure to deliver on his mandate as the head of the state-owned power utility company.

But ZESCO has refused to confirm the reports, leaving many to speculate. Speaking when contacted by ZBT, ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi said, the matter is a big rumor which he was not aware of. “That is a very big rumor which I can’t comment on and I
don’t know about that.”

When told that their are impeacable sources who have indicated that Mapani has indeed been sacked by the board, Maubi stated that “I don’t deal with rumors and there is no such a thing, if it is there I don’t know but there is no such a thing.”

Members of the public and some energy experts have accused Mapani and his management team of being out of touch with the realities on the ground and failing to come up with innovative and practical solutions to the energy crisis.

The energy crisis has further been exacerbated by a decline in water levels at the country’s main hydroelectric power stations, resulting in reduced electricity generation. Zambia over depends on hydro power which accounts for about 80% of the total power generated in the country.

Big Solar solutions and deals signed which had been publicized are were expected to provide the fall back seem to have all been derailed with no definite dates for commencement of construction communicated to the public.

DECISIONS MADE BY CABINET AT THE 8TH CABINET MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 6TH MAY, 2024.

The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, called for the 8th Cabinet Meeting in the Year 2024, on Monday, 6th May, 2024, at State House, to deliberate on policy and legislative matters with the view to enhancing national development in the country for the good of the people.

Cabinet made the following decisions:

1. Suspension of Import duty on the importation of maize.

In order to respond to the adverse effects of the devastating drought the country has experienced, Cabinet approved the drought response plan at its 7th Meeting which was held on 8th April, 2024. This was after His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, declared the country’s drought as a national disaster and emergency on Thursday, 29th February, 2024. Following the declaration, on 16th April, 2024, the President made an appeal to the international community, partners within the country, the private sector, the church and civil society organisations to support the drought response plan financially and materially in mitigating the devastating effects of the drought.

To ensure that the Zambian people have adequate food, Cabinet at its 8th Meeting held on Monday, 6th May, 2024, approved the suspension of applicable import duty of 15 percent and surtax of 5 percent on the importation of maize to zero.

This measure taken by Cabinet, is also meant to incentivise the private sector to participate in the importation of the staple food, maize, so as to ensure that there is adequate food in the country.

2. Establishment of Formal Diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, the Republic of Panama and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Cabinet approved that Zambia should establish formal diplomatic relations (using normal administrative resources) and not to open embassies nor send officers to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Republic of Panama and the Saint Vincent and Grenadines.

Cabinet has indicated that there is need to formalise relations with these countries in order to boost Zambia’s international interests, especially that Zambia has been exchanging goodwill messages with these countries without having formally established diplomatic relations. The decision by Cabinet is also premised on the fact that State to State relations among nations provide an essential framework for the conduct of foreign relations, as well as for Zambia to achieve greater Foreign Policy and national interest goals.

3. Integrated Public Financial Management Reform Strategy 2024 – 2027.

Cabinet approved the Integrated Public Financial Management Reform Strategy 2024 – 2027 for implementation.
Government is committed to openness in public sector governance, transparency in fiscal operations and reforms for better service delivery to the citizens and communities. An Integrated Public Financial Management Reform Strategy has, therefore, been prepared which contains proposed strategies to achieve overall fiscal discipline, efficient collections of the revenues, allocation of resources to priority needs, and prudent utilisation of public funds for efficient and effective delivery of public services.

The implementation of the Strategy is expected to result in having a well-functioning integrated Public Financial Management that ensures efficient, effective, and sustainable service delivery which meets developmental aspirations of the citizenry and is poised to transform the country into a middle-income country by 2030.

4. Membership to the Africa50 Fund Infrastructure Development.

Cabinet also approved Zambia’s membership to the Africa50 Fund. The Africa50 Fund is an African Organisation established institution through the African Governments and the African Development Bank.

The Africa50 Fund was ratified by African Finance Ministers in May, 2013 and the headquarter is based in Morocco. The general objective of the Africa50 Fund is to help bridge Africa’s infrastructure funding gap by facilitating projects development, mobilising public and private sector finance, as well as investing in bankable infrastructure projects that have significant development impact and have a risk adjusted return to investors. The Africa50 Fund also helps develop existing pipeline projects for investment with strategic partners, as well as mobilising public and private sector funding from within and outside Africa.

5. Statutory Instruments:

(a) The Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Construction Materials) (Public Private Partnership) (Amendment) Regulations, 2024.

Cabinet approved the Statutory Instrument intended to amend the Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Construction Materials) (Public Private Partnership) Regulations, 2023.

The 2023 National Budget introduced tax incentives aimed at encouraging investment in Public Private Partnership (PPP) infrastructure projects. The tax incentives include reduced income tax rate from 30 percent to 15 percent, value added tax and customs duty exemption on plant, machinery and equipment. Therefore, the draft Statutory Instrument, 2024, approved by Cabinet, aims to extend the list of critical materials to be imported for PPP Projects, in order to address the current infrastructure deficit in the country.

The implementation of the 2024 Statutory Instrument will result in a significant reduction in the cost of procurement of materials, reduce overall project costs, enhance project competitiveness and relieve pressure on the Treasury to meet the infrastructure deficit going forward.

(b) The Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Export Duty) (Treated Wooden Poles) Regulations, 2024.

Another Statutory Instrument approved by Cabinet during the Meeting, is the Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Export Duty) (Treated Wooden Poles) Regulations, 2024, which is intended to suspend export duty on treated wooden poles.

The 2016 National Budget introduced a 40 percent export duty on unprocessed wood to encourage local value addition and enable the country to benefit from local natural resource endowments. The local forestry companies responded to the measure by investing into expansion of pole treatment plants to enhance local value addition, with intention to meet local demand.

However, the local forestry industry has over the years, produced poles in excess of local demand and the surplus of the commodity going to waste due to lack of orders in the domestic market. As such, local pole processing companies have sought opportunity in the export market. However, the 40 percent export duty renders local poles uncompetitive as the final price is hiked when exported. This hinders the country’s access to a significant and available export market, which presents potential earnings of the much-needed foreign exchange, that would not only support efforts to stabilise our currency, but also contribute to the overall growth of the economy.

The issuance of the Statutory Instrument will, therefore, suspend export duty on treated wooden poles when exported by a forestry company issued with an export permit by the Ministry responsible for lands and natural resources.

6. Signing and Ratification of the Beira Development Corridor Agreement.

Cabinet approved that Zambia should sign and ratify the Beira Development Corridor Agreement (BDCA) amongst the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Malawi, the Republic of Mozambique, the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Republic of Zambia.

It is in the interest of Cabinet for Zambia to sign and ratify the BDCA in order for the Agreement to enter into force and facilitate the creation of coordination mechanisms and address the challenges that require to be resolved by the five Contracting States. This will promote and facilitate infrastructure development, transit-transport cooperation and cross border trade among the five Contracting States and ensure that they benefit from the various initiatives and development projects to be undertaken by the various stakeholders and Cooperating Partners within the Corridor.

The Beira Development Corridor is critical to enhancing regional and international trade competitiveness particularly for the landlocked countries of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Democratic Republic of Congo.

7. The Teaching Profession (Repeal), Bill, 2024.

Cabinet approved in principle, to repeal the Teaching Profession Act No. 5 of 2013 in order to among others, introduce licensure examinations for teachers; change the composition and number of the Council members; and regulate the professional conduct of teachers.

The Teaching Profession Act No. 5 of 2013 was enacted in order to regulate the teaching profession. The law provides for registration of teachers in a teacher’s register and issuance of practicing certificates which gives the teachers authority to teach in any given school whether private or public.

Cabinet has agreed to introduce licensure examinations for teachers in order to enhance quality assurance and professionalism of teachers. Further, the Act has two parallel structures for disciplining erring teachers. Teachers in the Private sector are disciplined by the Disciplinary Committee of the Teaching Council of Zambia, while those in Public Service are disciplined by the Teaching Service Commission. This has made it difficult to enforce teacher professionalism comprehensively.

The proposed Bill, once enacted, will enforce discipline in both the private and public sectors; align the law to Government policy direction on the number of Council members; and mandate the Council to register qualified teachers, monitor, enforce and promote professionalism in the education system through licensure examinations.

8. Zambia’s Hosting of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade Forum.

In winding up debate for the day, Cabinet approved Zambia’s hosting of the AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum which is scheduled to take place from 20th to 22nd June, 2024, under the theme “Creating Opportunities in the AfCFTA Digital Trade Market: Accelerating Intra-Africa Trade.”

Hosting of the AfCFTA Digital Forum is premised on the need to bring together key stakeholders from the 54 Member States of the AfCFTA, to dialogue on key opportunities that exist within the AfCFTA market, following the adoption of the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade.

The decision by Cabinet to host the AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum aligns with some existing policies such as the AU Agenda 2063 and the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020-2023), and the Protocol to the Agreement establishing the AfCFTA on Digital Trade.

Given the conclusion of the protocol on digital trade, it is an opportune time to convene the AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum. This forum will bring together industry players, policymakers, and opinion leaders to engage in dialogue regarding the opportunities under the AfCFTA.

The White House has disclosed why the US halted the shipment of bombs to Israel last week.

Last week reports emerged that the US President Joe Biden’s administration asked for the pause of a bomb shipment to Israel, which consisted of 1,800 2,000lb (907kg) bombs and 1,700 500lb bombs despite the US’ proclaimed unwavering support to Israel.

But now, a White House official has come out to say that the pause was based on the unresolved issues of the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, southern Gaza.

The official said Israel has not “fully addressed” the US concerns on the plight of the people of Rafah, according to BBC.

On Monday Israel sent tanks to Rafah to begin a major ground operation and seized some key crossing areas even as Hamas accepts ceasefire deals brokered in Egypt.

Rafah has been a key entry point for aid and the only exit for people able to flee since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas last October.

“The US position has been that Israel should not launch a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltering with nowhere else to go,” the White House administration official said according to the BBC.



“We have been engaging in a dialogue with Israel in our Strategic Consultative Group format on how they will meet the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, and how to operate differently against Hamas there than they have elsewhere in Gaza.

“Those discussions are ongoing and have not fully addressed our concerns. As Israeli leaders seemed to approach a decision point on such an operation, we began to carefully review proposed transfers of particular weapons to Israel that might be used in Rafah. This began in April.

“As a result of that review, we have paused one shipment of weapons last week. It consists of 1,800 2,000lb bombs and 1,700 500lb bombs. We are especially focused on the end-use of the 2,000-lb bombs and the impact they could have in dense urban settings as we have seen in other parts of Gaza. We have not made a final determination on how to proceed with this shipment.”

The unnamed official added, “For certain other cases at the State Department, including JDAM [Joint Direct Attack Munition] kits, we are continuing the review. None of these cases involve imminent transfers – they are about future transfers”.

The official said that the shipments were unrelated to last month’s landmark $17 billion military aid package, but had been drawn from “previously appropriated funds.”

Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to the group’s cross-border attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 others were taken hostage.

More than 34,780 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

”Glory to Hong Kong” protest song currently prohibited in city of China

on Wednesday, a court agreed with the Hong Kong government and banned a well-liked protest song. This decision has raised worries about the loss of freedoms in Hong Kong, which used to be a place with lots of freedom.

Protestors sang “Glory to Hong Kong” during big protests against the government in 2019. The song was played by mistake instead of China’s anthem at sports events, which made city officials upset.

The last time a song got banned in the city was in 1997 when Britain gave control back to China.

Critics believe that banning the song limits freedom of speech, especially since Beijing has been cracking down on Hong Kong after the 2019 protests. They also said that the ban could cause problems for big technology companies and make the city less attractive for businesses.

Judge Jeremy Poon said the composer meant for the song to be a strong and emotional tool for some people in the city.

“He said that just prosecuting criminals is not enough to solve the serious criminal problems. We also need to have a court order to stop them from doing illegal activities. ”

He said the court order was needed to get internet companies to take down videos connected to the song that were causing problems. The operators said they will agree to the government’s request if there is a court order.

The ban would affect anyone who shared or spread the song to support Hong Kong breaking away from China. It would also make it against the rules to do anything that makes the song seem like the national anthem in order to disrespect it.

The song can be played for news reporting and school work.

Not following the court order could be seen as disrespecting the court and could mean getting a fine or going to jail.

In the past, the police arrested some people for playing the song in public for other reasons, like playing a musical instrument in public without permission. This was reported by the local news.

By Wednesday afternoon, the song “Glory to Hong Kong,” by an artist named “Thomas and the Hong Kong people,” was still on Spotify and Apple Music in both English and Cantonese. I looked on YouTube for the song and found lots of different videos and versions.

Google said in an email to the AP that it is looking at the court’s decision. Spotify and Apple did not say anything right away.

George Chen, who helps lead the digital practice at The Asia Group, a business and policy company in Washington, said it would be best for tech companies to limit access to the content in question in a specific area to follow the order.

Chen asked the government to think about how to help people feel less worried about the order’s impact on speaking freely.

He said he hoped that these bans won’t become common and set a standard. “He said this will make people very worried about how free Hong Kong’s internet will be tomorrow. ”

In 2020, Beijing made a new law to stop the long-lasting protests and keep the country safe. That rule was used to capture lots of the city’s top democracy supporters. In March, the city made a new security law that was from within the city. This made people more worried that the city’s Western-style freedoms could be reduced even more. The two laws usually focus on very bad crimes.

After the decision was made, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, said it is important for the city to maintain national security by preventing people from using the song to cause division and disrespect the national anthem.

Paul Lam, the person in charge of legal matters in Hong Kong, said the court order was not meant to stop internet service providers from working as usual. He said the government will tell the providers to take down the related content as ordered by the court.

Lam said that the things the ban stops could be seen as crimes even without the court order. He also said that the ban only covers a few things.

However, Eric Lai, who works at Georgetown Center for Asian Law, said that while it’s normal for courts to trust the government when it comes to national security in other places, the court has not been able to make sure that citizens’ basic rights, like free speech, are still protected.

“He said it’s disappointing that they agreed to use lawsuits to help enforce the national security law. ”

Amnesty International said the injunction was a pointless attack on freedom of speech and goes against global human rights laws.

Sarah Brooks, who is the China Director for Amnesty International, said that the government’s recent win in the appeal court, after losing the case last year, is a concerning sign. It shows that the government is becoming more unwilling to protect human rights and fulfill their responsibilities.

Brooks asked leaders to stop trying to limit people’s rights in the name of keeping the country safe.

Last year, the government took Google to court because Google refused to show China’s national anthem as the first result when people searched for the city’s anthem. Instead, Google displayed a protest song. Last July, a court said no to their first request. Many people saw this as a setback for officials who wanted to stop the protestors.

The government’s appeal said that if the president thinks a rule is needed, the court should approve it unless it won’t do anything. This information comes from a legal paper on the government’s website.

The government told schools to stop playing the protest song. It used to say it followed the rules in the city’s constitution, but it also said that freedom of speech has some limits.

German politician attacked prior to EU elections

A well-known politician from Berlin was attacked and hurt in the head and neck, on Wednesday according to police. This is part of a series of attacks on politicians, which is worrying and shows that political violence is increasing in Germany.

Franziska Giffey, a former mayor and ex-federal minister, who is now a top economic official in the city, was attacked at a library event in Berlin on Tuesday. A man came up from behind and hit her with a bag that had something hard inside, according to the police.

Giffey went to the hospital because his head and neck hurt, and the police said he got medical help there. The police took a 74-year-old man into custody and searched his house. They said the police knew who the suspect was, but they didn’t say why the suspect did it.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner expressed strong disapproval of the attack.

“Wegner said that if someone attacks politicians, they are also attacking our democracy,” according to the German news agency dpa. “We won’t put up with this. ” We will not support violence, hate, or stirring up trouble, and we will keep our democracy safe.

Giffey said on Instagram that we live in a country where everyone can say what they think because it’s free and democratic. But there is a definite boundary. And that is hurting people who have a different opinion, for any reason, in any way.

“She said we need to stand against them breaking the rules that society has set. ”

Later on Wednesday, Giffey, with bodyguards, talked to reporters in Berlin and said she was feeling okay. She also said that it’s important for leaders to be able to move around freely in the country.

The party of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s candidate got hurt while campaigning in Dresden last week. They had to have surgery.

The police arrested four people, who are 17 to 18 years old. They believe this group also attacked a Greens party worker before attacking Matthias Ecke. Officials said that at least one of the teenagers is connected to far-right organizations.

On Tuesday, a 47-year-old Green Party member was attacked by two people while hanging election posters in Dresden.

The events have made politicians in Germany very tense.

Both the ruling and opposing political parties are saying that their members and supporters have been experiencing a lot of physical and verbal attacks lately. They want the police to increase their protection for politicians and election rallies.

In February, the German Parliament reported that there were 2,790 attacks on elected officials in 2023. Members of The Greens were affected more than others in 1,219 cases, followed by the far-right AfD in 478 cases and the SPD in 420 cases.

In January, angry farmers stopped the vice chancellor, Robert Habeck, from getting off a ferry for hours. And last week, an angry crowd blocked the car of the vice president of the German Parliament, Katrin Goering-Eckardt, from leaving an event in Brandenburg. Both Habeck and Goering-Eckardt are members of The Greens party.

Nancy Faeser, Germany’s federal interior minister, said that they had a meeting with the country’s 16 state interior ministers to talk about violence. They are thinking about making the laws stricter to punish people who do things that go against democracy.

A lot of bad things have happened in the eastern part of the country, where Scholz’s government is not liked by many people. The Interior Ministry in Saxony has reported 112 crimes related to the election, including 30 against elected officials.

Major political parties have said that AfD is connected to violent neo-Nazi groups and is creating a scary political atmosphere. One of its leaders, Bjoern Hoecke, is currently in trouble for using a Nazi slogan that is not allowed.

The political party Alternative for Germany, which is against immigration and European unity, is likely to win more votes in the European elections and also in the elections in Saxony and two other eastern German states in the fall.

A teacher accused of having a pupil’s baby while on bail for having sex with another pupil

A teacher accused of having a pupil’s baby while on bail for having sex with another pupil allegedly “surprised” the victim with an “I love my daddy” baby’s onesie, a court heard.

Rebecca Joynes, 30, is currently on trial at Manchester Crown Court accused of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two while being a person in a position of trust.

The court heard how one of the alleged victims, known only as Boy B, said he was informed that she was pregnant one night when she organised a “date night” for them both.

She is understood to have presented him with a Victoria’s Secret scratch card on which there were sexual fantasies designed as prompts. She also reportedly ordered food from Pizza Express and left a “trail of surprises” which the child was tasked to follow.

The final item in the “trail,” the court heard, was the baby onesie with the words “I love my daddy” written across it.

The child added that Joynes was “very jealous and controlling of him”.

Joynes denies two counts of sexual activity with Boy A, two counts of sexual activity with Boy B and two counts of sexual activity with Boy B while being a person in a position of trust.

She reportedly groomed her first victim Boy A by buying him a £345 Gucci belt and allegedly took him to her flat in Salford, Greater Manchester, where it is alleged they had sex twice.

She was suspended by her school following a subsequent investigation by police.

She is understood to have told officers that no such sexual activity had taken place and she was released on bail under the condition that she had no unsupervised contact with a minor.

Boy A is understood to have been cross-examined by Joynes’ barrister but on Monday, May 6, prosecutor Joe Allman told the jury that she had been sexually involved with another student.

“The case was then adjourned to await the rest of the trial but, it turned out that Ms Joynes had been in a fairly long-term sexual relationship with another 15-year-old pupil,” Mr Allman said.

“In due course (Boy B) gave his own account. He said they were in contact while she was suspended and that he went to her flat when he was 15.

“They kissed and then after he turned 16 they struck up a full sexual relationship from which she ended up pregnant to his very great shock because she had told him she couldn’t get pregnant because she had polycystic ovary syndrome.

“So remarkably and, in all honesty quite brazenly, this was all happening while Ms Joynes was on bail to this court. Of course, she can’t deny that sexual relationship because she became pregnant with (Boy B’s) child and she had (Boy B’s) child.

“Instead this time she claims the sexual activity didn’t start until he was over 16 and she had been finally dismissed from the school.”

Mr Allman also said Boy B had sent her a “crude” message which read: “Get your tits out”, to which she replied: “Not tonight.”

Joynes was also said to have sent him a photograph of her bum with her only wearing knickers, the court heard.

The two-week trial continues.

Doctors found a dead worm in my head after it ate part of my brain – US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed in a deposition taken more than a decade ago that a worm ate part of his brain before dying inside his head.

RFK Jr., now 70, made the bizarre admission during his 2012 divorce proceeding, detailing “cognitive problems” he initially feared were a brain tumor — only for a second doctor to tell him the dark spots on his brain scans were a dead parasite, according to reporting by the New York Times.

Before getting a second medical opinion, Kennedy had been set to undergo surgery by the same doctor who operated on his uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), who had died from brain cancer in 2009.

However, a doctor at New York-Presbyterian Hospital believed the abnormality on his scans “was caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died,” Kennedy said in the transcribed interview.

RFK Jr. also said during the 2012 deposition that he suffered from mercury poisoning after eating too many tuna fish sandwiches, which doctors say was probably the actual cause of Kennedy’s neurological issues.

“I have cognitive problems, clearly,” the son of the late attorney general and senator from New York said at the time. “I have short-term memory loss, and I have longer-term memory loss that affects me.”

Kennedy said he suffered from “severe brain fog” and had trouble retrieving words around the same time that his mercury levels were 10 times what the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe.

The politician who is known as a vaccine skeptic said he was certain his diet was causing the issue.

“I loved tuna fish sandwiches. I ate them all the time,” he said.

Three sisters have allegedly seized and refused to release the corpse of their late brother for five years.

Three sisters have allegedly seized and refused to release the corpse of their late brother, one Mr. Ernest, to his wife and children, for five years.

The incident happened in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where the sisters and their late brother are from.

The sisters, who operate a prayer ministry, also seized the entire properties of their late brother and denied the wife and children access to them since 2019 when the deceased died after a protracted illness caused by accident.

The case was presented at the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Awka for government’s intervention.

Speaking, the wife and the only surviving son of the deceased said they were also denied access to him when he was still alive and critically ill, as the sisters allegedly took him away to the area where they have their prayer centre.

They also lamented that since Ernest’s death, they have been making efforts to see and bury his corpse, all to no avail. They added that the three sisters seized everything, including his corpse and properties, denying them access to them.

This was corroborated by a younger brother of the deceased, who recounted how his three sisters have been a thorn in their flesh of the family members and anyone who dares to correct or oppose them.

The deceased’s brother noted that two of the sisters are married while one is not. He added that their married sisters would always come from their husbands’ houses and team up with the unmarried one to control or interfere in the affairs of the family. It got so severe that three of them were suspended by the kindred and the Ụmụada.

When interrogated, one of the three sisters, simply identified as Mrs. Augustina, claimed that the corpse and the properties of their late brother were held by them because he was not on good terms with the wife and children when he was alive, which made them deny them access to his corpse and property.

Intervening, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, directed the three sisters to hand over and allow the son of the deceased to have full control of his father’s corpse and properties, so that he would be buried.

She stressed that anyone found wanting or violating any law of the state must be made to face the law.

12 Malawians who abandoned Israeli farms deported

Twelve Malawians have been deported from Israel after leaving the farms where they were working to get higher salaries elsewhere.

The 12 Malawians were among more than 40 foreign workers who were arrested while working at a bakery in Tel Aviv last week.

The workers, who were part of a labour agreement between Israel and Malawi, were unhappy with working conditions in the agricultural sector and found work in a bakery instead.

Israel ambassador to Malawi Michael Lotem told the BBC: “Anybody who violates his visa terms will be deported – as easy as this, as in any country.

“I hope it will be a sign for others that it is better to stick to the job. Nobody forced them to come, they came to do a job, they should do the job that is all.

Last week, Benzani, a Malawian working in Israel, told the BBC that some of his compatriots working on other farms were being paid less than half the minimum wage in Israel.

“The minimum wage in Israel is 32 shekels ($8.60; £6.85) an hour, but some of us are being paid 18 to 20 shekels an hour.”

Benzani said many of them had signed contracts which said they would receive $1,500 a month.

Benzani is not one of those who were deported.

Mr Lotem said that rather than leaving the farms and breaking the conditions of their visas, they should have lodged a complaint.

“If someone thinks that he is not getting what he deserves, there is a hotline and a phone number they can call

“Violating the law is not the answer.

“The Israeli police shows zero tolerance to illegal activity especially these days when we have so many other troubles,” Mr Lotem said.

Those deported were part of a labour drive by the Israeli government last year to fill a shortage of agricultural workers following the attacks on Israel in October 2023 by Hamas.

This led Israel to stop giving permits to Palestinians to work on its farms, while 10,000 migrant farm workers – mostly Thailand nationals – left Israel after war broke out.

More than 200 Malawians went to Israel, while Kenya agreed to send 1,500 workers.

The announcement of the deal sparked mixed reactions in Kenya, with some concerned about their safety.

The two governments said it would help reduce unemployment in their countries.

My wife knows that I generally prefer texting to voice calls and hence when she calls, then I know that it’s urgent and have to pick the call instantly.

So about 5pm yesterday my phone rung from her when I was in the outskirts of Matero. ” We have run out of mealie meal and not even a little for supper tonight”. Big emergency this one was especially for ny own sake as rice or ama chips my kids love gets me hungry again in less than an hour. I stopped all was doing in Matero and drove towards home to purchase a bag of ‘5 fingers’ ingredients.

I then thought to myself that this was my opportunity to access the cheap ZNS controlled mealie meal produced by Kalonga Milling and sold at a fixed price of K230 per 25 KG bag. I trekked from one ShopRite to another in Lusaka and they did not have it in stock. Then my wife informed me of an Indian ran shop that had earlier in the day. I drove there but only found Pembe milling, Nyimba milling, Africa Milling and National Milling breakfast pegged at around K370 per 25 KG bag.

I then asked the owner what happened to the cheap ZNS meal meal they were reported to have had earlier in the day. ” My brother; as soon as it arrived; was bought within 15 minutes. We did not even have time to offload it into the shop and had to sell it off the delivery truck outside as there a lot of buyers outside to it as soon as arrived”.

I then asked him how the people knew he was going to receive the cheap ZNS ubunga. ” ..it seems just there at ZNS some people leak to buyers where the next delivery is scheduled and so they dash in advance to wait. “.

I asked how he makes orders. ” We have to deposit money in advance in a Kalonga Milling bank account and then we called a day or two later to go collect from their production plant. Today we only received 300 bags despite having paid for more “.

So I just bought the Nyimba Milling one at K370 for my home. As walked out I could not help but tell the Indian shop owners (in Millie’s Voice) ..”Kooma Viintu Vavuta”. He burst out laughing and said “maningi Honourable “.

The ZNS cheap mealie meal idea is good for the nation but only to the extent that it is available to consumers. As at now it is mostly only available in virtual zoom form or accesed only via social media pics.

This is very interesting. I don’t know Dr. Zumani personally; however, someone can tell him that I would be prepared to be called and testify for him and provide a character witness for Dr. Mumba.

Although I have not asked him about this particular matter, I am pretty sure that even R. Nakachinda would be prepared to give a character evaluation of Dr. Mumba. Although I don’t regard myself as perfect or a saint, I do believe that everyone of us in the political arena offering ourselves for leadership should be ready to be evaluated by the public and not get mad if they can see through our hypocrisy.

For example, why should Bashi Mutende be attacked if he holds an opinion about the socialist party leader? He must have his reasons for holding that opinion. If you have a different opinion, and if you want to be fair, just ask him why he holds this opinion about Fred M’membe.

I too have an opinion about Fred, about HH, and about ECL, just like many of you have an opinion about them and about me. If I express my opinion about, say, Boman Lusambo, just ask me to justify my opinion. Don’t attack or quickly dismiss my opinion because it may be helpful to you.

It is common and useful in true democracies to evaluate the past behaviour of people. Because people don’t suddenly change their characters when they get into office. In fact, the bad side of their characters is accentuated by power.

So, let us honestly be allowed to dig into the past history of our leaders and evaluate them so that we don’t put dangerous people in the office. So that we don’t start complaining later that nobody told us.

There are far too many fake and dishonest people in our politics who go around pretending that they are holy and good when, in fact, they are not. I for one, the day I tell people that I want to lead you, please dig out all the nasty things I have ever done so that people can discover who I truly am.

As for Dr. Mumba, in the spirit of informing the public, I am willing to be put on the stand and share my personal experience with him, and I know a lot. Somebody call me to court, and under oath, I will testify. See less

The United Party for National Development (UPND) refutes claims of tension with the catholic church, dismissing them as mere propanganda by the embattled former ruling party PF.

UPND Consultant Mark Simuuwe addressing media at the Anderson Kambela house in Lusaka this morning, described the ongoing narrative suggesting tension between the church and the ruling party ‘UPND’ as an agenda the embattled PF are setting to dent the image of the ruling party and its President who has exposed their weaknesses in governing and managing the country’s resources.

“ Our Party has always maintained a respectful and cooperative relationship with the catholic church and we value the important role they play in our society.” said Mr Simuuwe.

Adding that it is crucial to not fall for false narratives and instead focus, on the facts and truth of the matter.

Mr Simuuwe said that, It is a known fact that the Patiotic Front during their time in government completely failed, to acknowledge and recognise the role played by the Catholic Church in the social and economic system of the governance.

“It is so shocking that those who previously disregarded the Catholic Church, marginalized the church’s voice and gave preference to alternative groups like “Christians for Lungu.” are now leading a propaganda claiming that there is tension between with the ruling party,”said Mr Simuuwe.

He noted that the opposition are spearheading the propaganda when, there has been no formal complaint from the Catholic Church or the ruling party regarding any conflicts between them.

“Yet, the PF persist in creating a false narrative of tension, which not only lacks sincerity but also disrespects the Catholic Church and undermines efforts to foster unity.” said Mr Simuuwe.

He said the ruling party has maintained a positive and constructive relationship with the Catholic Church since their time in opposition.

Mr Simuuwe said the UPND will not fall prey to divisive propaganda, but will continue to uphold the values, transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all public discussions.

And condemned PF’s attempts to fabricate a conflict between the Catholic Church and the ruling party.

“As Zambians, we must remain vigilant against such divisive tactics and prioritize unity and cooperation for the betterment of our nation.”said Mr Simuuwe.

Adding that it is important to scrutinise the motives behind these accusations and acknowkedge, President Hichilema’s dedication and efforts to fostering a harmonious bond between the church, government and the people of Zambia in general.

Mr Simuuwe said the current situation of PF’s efforts to manufacture discord calls for alertness from the people of Zambia who need a peaceful environment.

“We echo President Hakainde’s call that unity and collaboration over divisive strategies is key to the advancement and prosperity of every nation.

The United Kwacha Alliance is greatly encouraged by the recent by elections held last Thursday.

The United Kwacha Alliance is made up of eleven political parties whose aim is to reduce the number of political parties putting up candidates to contest elections. It is for this reason that we set certain objectives for us to attain through the by elections. The set goals were;

1. Attain situation where none of the eleven political parties would field candidates against each other. 2. Test system of eleven different political parties at local and National level choosing a candidate from amongst the various aspirants from the different parties.

3. Testing plan B if state continues to delay the registration of a political party.

4. Getting the local party structures in the localities where elections were being held to make links and collaborate together.

5. Practically showing local and National leadership that they can campaign together.

6. Studying tactics of the party in power in order to develop counter measures.

We have received feed back from our local leadership which helps us assess how effective these test runs were. The first and second goals met with hundred percent success. All of the other goals were achieved to very satisfactory levels. More work needs to be done and the process has allowed us to identify which areas we need to tweak and work on.

The other positive gain was of course learning the tricks and tactics of the Imingalato crew. Having seen some of their tactics we are developing effective counter measures that are imingalato-proof.

Whenever one has a mission it is important to have tests done to perfect the plan. It would be folly for us not to do these test runs before the 2026 elections only to discover all sorts of glitches and problems when trying to execute the real deal.

The Americans only landed a man on the moon after eleven Apollo Rocket tests and launches. Apollo eleven was the real deal after some failed tests from which they learnt.

Some say we have ambitious goals of winning the 2026 elections. To those who say so we encourage them to look at John F. Kennedy’s famous speech about landing on the moon!

On September 12, 1962, President Kennedy delivered a speech which is still remembered and celebrated today as a powerful example of visionary leadership and the power of setting ambitious goals.

I will paraphrase his speech and say:

“We choose to WIN THE 2026 ELECTIONS (go to the moon) in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.”

We are on course and UKA will win the 2026 elections.

I AM supporting HH because he is doing a fantastic job, says former vice-president Enoch Kavindele.

In an interview, Kavindele said President Hakainde Hichilema has spent a lot of time correcting Lungu’s mistakes

“With hindsight I should have supported HH in 2016 to win the elections and Zambia today would have been paradise. HH is not losing the 2026 elections because his policy of taking development to all parts of Zambia is highly appreciated by all, especially those areas that were ignored by the previous administration. It is true that I went round the country flying with Edgar in order to assist him win the elections,” he told The Mast. “To me at the time I didn’t know much about the man. However, in 2021 I couldn’t assist him or join his election campaign because I had now learnt the type of person he was through the writings of his political advisor Mr Zumani Zimba. He said this man was corrupt, he was a playboy and was wasting a lot of public resources. That came from his own political advisor. In order to assist Lungu I had been approached by the late RB – Rupiah Banda to assist this man in campaigns. And also president Lungu himself sent some very senior military man from the North Western Province to come and ask me to please assist. And this is based on the experience I have in the elections. I campaigned for president KK in 1968 when I was 18 [years old]. I campaigned for Chiluba, Mwanawasa, RB. All those I campaigned for them. So my reputation as a communicator is very well known. When Lungu won I did not even get the courtesy of an acknowledgment, thanking me for the 90 days that I had to sleep in some places where mosquitoes were feasting on me.”

Kavindele concluded that Lungu failed in the last elections because of having raw advisors such as Zimba.

He regretted that he supported Lungu in 2016 instead of President Hichilema.

“Now with revelations coming from the AG (Auditor General) I can see that this man performed poorly because of having raw – inexperienced political advisors. Mr Kaizar Zulu and this chap Zimba. So for those they just thought that politics was about enjoying, getting benefits, whatever. But I never got any benefits from government. Zimba and others benefitted from my sweat because I have contributed a lot to the politics of this country. He is therefore a wrong chap to start insulting me because there is nothing he has done for this country,” said Kavindele. “In those days there was no CDF but I contributed my personal resources to building schools in Chingola. And all those projects are there and some of the people who saw this are still there in Chingola. I do have a lot of respect for the presidency, yes, but after Zumani revealed Lungu’s activities I realised that I made a mistake by campaigning for Lungu. On the other hand I am supporting HH because he is doing a fantastic job. And were it not for the drought, I think Zambia would have had a bumper crop. But HH could not stop the drought because that is now somebody else’s responsibility – our Creator. HH has spent a lot of time correcting Lungu’s mistakes. When a country borrows money and you fail to pay you’re sending a terribly wrong signal. And that’s what the PF did.”

CITIZENS First leader Harry Kalaba says the country is losing out on international relations because of delay by the President to appoint a foreign affairs minister.

Kalaba said President Hakainde Hichilema should have appointed another minister the moment Stanely Kakubo resigned if he understood the role such a minister plays.

He told The Mast that even if Mulambo Haimbe, the Minister of Justice, can be acting the one who is carrying out the duty is the President himself.

“The President is the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces, meaning that all army chiefs report to the President. The President is now currently the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs because when a minister is travelling out, as per Vienna convention, there are only two figures that can allow for a minister to go for meeting outside Zambia and represent Zambia, that is the President and the foreign affairs minister,” he said. “So currently, even if minister Haimbe can be acting, the one who is carrying out that duty is the President himself. So he is acting foreign affairs minister and instead of him dealing with all those papers, he should have been dealing with more pressing matters in the nation. Clearly, showing that the President does not have depth, doesn’t understand the enormous task before him as Head of State.”

Kalaba said the need for the country to have a substantive foreign minister can never be over emphasised.

“The impact that this has first of all it is a strong sign showing that Zambia is very unstable in terms of its foreign relations. The fact that we cannot have a substantive foreign minister who will anchor all our interests and bring them to our advantage clearly shows you that there is problem with Zambia’s foreign policy. And because there is that problem, it is very difficult for Zambia now to asset herself in many other issues in COMESA, in SADC and the African Union, the United Nations. Both bilateral, multilateral levels because the foreign minister is the one that lays the foundation for any other activities to be done. But apparently the President has not understood that Zambia is living in a global village and the need for us to have a substantive foreign minister can never be over emphasised,” said Kalaba. “Therefore, yes we are losing out on international relations and it shows the lack of depth on the part of our country. But also it clearly shows that the President does not understand the role that the foreign affairs minister plays. Because if he understood, he would have appointed him the very day that guy resigned. He would have found someone else so that Zambia’s imagine is kept intact.”

In late December 2023, Kakubo quit after he was allegedly caught on video receiving a stack of cash from a Chinese businessman.

He did not deny he was in the video.

The video shows two men sitting by a table counting the neatly stacked cash, both US dollars and Zambian kwacha.

Their faces are not visible, but it led to a frenzy of speculation on social media that the men were Kakubo and businessman of Chinese origin.

Unverified images of signed handwritten notes also surfaced on social media. One said that $100,000 had been “exchanged” between a Zambian and a Chinese mining company. Another, dated 8 July 2022, mentioned a total sum of $200,000.

In his resignation letter, Kakubo did not dispute the authenticity of the video or the handwritten notes.

Instead, he said he was the victim of “malicious claims over a business transaction between my private family business and our business partner with whom we still have good relations”.

He said he had resigned as a minister to ensure that the government was not “distracted” from its efforts to improve the lives of Zambians, but he would remain an MP.

President Hichilema accepted his resignation, saying he acknowledged Mr Kakubo’s “commendable work and leadership”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation wishes to inform the nation that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia will embark on an Official Visit to Kenya at the invitation of His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, to attend the Africa Fertiliser and Soil Health Summit, which is scheduled for 9th May 2024.

President Hichilema will engage with other African Heads of State and Government, along with high-ranking Government officials, senior policymakers and development partners at this important meeting. The Summit serves as a platform to assess soil health across Africa and deliberate on innovative policies, financing mechanisms, and investments geared toward boosting agricultural productivity. The Summit will aim to highlight the crucial role of fertilizer and soil health in stimulating sustainable pro-poor productivity growth in African agriculture, and to forge consensus on an African Fertiliser and Soil Health Action Plan.

The Summit will be preceded by an Experts Session and a Joint Ministerial Session for Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Agriculture on 7th and 8th May 2024, respectively. These sessions will offer an opportunity for experts and policymakers to delve into key topics and prepare recommendations for discussion during the main Summit.

The decision to convene the Summit was endorsed by the 40th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February 2022.

The convening of the Summit is timely and aligns seamlessly with Zambia’s ambitious Economic Transformation Agenda. President Hichilema’s participation in this meeting is therefore crucial in order to shore up the Government’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities for joint ventures and partnerships in the Agriculture sector, which serves as a primary source of livelihood for the majority of Zambian citizens.

Additionally, the Government remains committed to attracting investments in climate-smart agriculture in order to bolster food security, enhance livelihood resilience, and mitigate the detrimental impacts of climate change.

On the margins of the Summit, the President is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and heads of key international organisations, leveraging the opportunity to discuss pressing regional and global issues.

The President is expected to return to Zambia immediately after his engagements.

2 killed, more than 50 trapped after a building under construction collapses in South Africa

A tall apartment building being built fell down on Monday in a city by the ocean in South Africa. Two workers died and 53 others are stuck under the broken building, according to the authorities.

An extra 20 workers were rescued from the destroyed building and are getting medical help at different hospitals, according to the city officials.

The building fell down at about 2 pm in George city, which is about 400 kilometers east of Cape Town on South Africa’s south coast.

More than 100 rescue workers were at the site for many hours. They will work through the night with sniffer dogs to find survivors, who might be trapped under big pieces of concrete.

The George municipality is sending cranes and heavy lifting equipment to help with the rescue. They are also bringing in more emergency responders from nearby towns and cities. They were supposed to arrive at the location around midnight.

The building site collapsed while 75 workers were there. The workers’ families and friends were at the municipal offices nearby, waiting to hear what happened.

The police were trying to figure out why the building fell down. They didn’t know the reason yet.

Marco Ferreira, who works for a group called Gift of the Givers, was helping the rescue team by giving them food and drinks. Gift of the Givers is a charity that often provides assistance during emergencies in South Africa. Ferreira said they gave three sniffer dogs and handlers to help find things.

“The situation is still in the rescue stage,” Ferreira said on eNCA TV news channel. “We don’t know. It will probably continue for days. ” There are some big machines there to help pick up heavy blocks of concrete. “But it doesn’t look good. ”

Officials did not right away give information about the injuries the workers got, but the news in South Africa said that several of them got really hurt. Two workers died after they were taken to hospitals, the George municipality said.

George’s Mayor, Leon Van Wyk, said that we are thinking about the families and everyone who is waiting to hear about their loved ones.

The government in Western Cape is watching the situation closely and has sent help to deal with the emergency.

“We have provided emergency workers with all the help they need to respond as quickly as possible. ” Right now, the officials are working to save lives. “This is the most important thing for us right now,” said Alan Winde, the leader of the Western Cape government.

The government was learning about the rescue operation, Winde said.

“Say Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one / To any bitch that talk to him and they in love / Just make sure you hide your little sister from him,” he spits.

However, he didn’t stop there. In addition to using Drizzy’s Toronto home on the joint’s cover art with tags implying its residents are registered sex offenders (“Certified lover boy, certified pedophiles“), K. Dot suggested that the 6 God also slept with Lil Wayne‘s girlfriends while the Young Money rapper was locked up on a gun charge in New York a few years back.

“Fucked on Wayne girl while he was in jail, that’s connivin’ / Then get his face tatted like a bitch apologizing,” he raps.

Prior to “Not Like Us,” Kendrick amped up the rivalry by dropping “6:16 in LA.” A follow-up to “euphoria” from earlier in the week, the cut alleges that people in Drake’s own team are praying on his downfall and even leaking information to his enemies.

That same evening, the Canadian superstar responded with a seven-plus minute joint packaged with a music video that shows a 1996 Chrysler Town & Country (the same make and model of car displayed on the cover art of good kid, m.A.A.d city‘s deluxe edition) being taken to the junkyard and crushed.

In addition to reprising the “Drop, Drop, Drop” from the “Push Ups” outro, Drizzy takes the war of words to a new place by accusing his rival of domestic violence, insincere racial activism, distancing himself from his native state of California and nudging 2Pac‘s estate to have his “Taylor Made Freestyle” removed from social-media platforms, among countless other jabs.

Chelsea Fans Make U-Turn, Demand Pochettino’s Stay After 5-0 Win Over West Ham

Chelsea fans have taken to social media to make a sensational U-Turn, asking for Mauricio Pochettino to stay following the club’s 5-0 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues fans demanded for Pochettino’s sacking following in April following a disappointing 2-2 draw against lowly Sheffield United.

But a run of two consecutive home wins against Tottenham and West Ham is enough to make some of the club’s supporters to change their stance on Pochettino.

Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Noni Madueke gave the hosts a 3-0 lead in the first half before scored a second half brace to complete the victory.

Some sections of Chelsea fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter to demand for Pochettino’s stay beyond the end of the season following reports that he will be sacked.

Mccloy Kay believes Pochettino has built a relationship with the player and wants the project to be trusted.

He said: “I hope Poch doesn’t get the sack yet. You can tell he has built a relationship with the players, we look like a team again maybe the process should be trusted.”

Dean CFC is clamouring for more time for Pochettino and his crew.

However, Kendrick still has to answer for some things that were laid out in “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6.”

That said, now that fans have decided that Kendrick is the winner, the Drizzy haters are out in full force. Subsequently, this has led to a whole lot of trolling on social media. For instance, according to TMZ, multiple Drake-related GoFundMes have popped up over the last few days. Many of them are declaring the artist as “finished,” while looking to raise funds for a funeral. Moreover, there are some who are making Kendrick-related GoFundMe pages, with the intent of getting him more studio time. As if he needs money for that?

Some of the names for these fundraisers include “Support Kendrick Lamar’s Studio Time for the Ultimate Diss T;” “Join the Love Fund for Drake’s Send-Off;” “RIP Drake(champagnepapi): Fans Unite in Grief.” At this point, GoFundMe is looking to take some of these down as they go against the website’s terms of service. Having said all of that, this just goes to show that fans love to take things too far when their favorites are involved.

It has been twenty-four years since the leader of the Kremlin started a war against Ukraine. Russia has suffered a lot of losses in this war. At home, President Putin has been making democracy weaker, not stronger: he has been putting people who disagree with him in jail and getting rid of the rules that limit his power.

Fiona Hill, who used to work for the White House, thinks that Putin now sees himself as a powerful leader like a Russian king.

“If we think about Putin’s first two terms as president, I think we would have a pretty good opinion of him. ” He helped the country to become stable politically and financially strong again. The Russian economy and system were doing very well compared to before.

The fighting in Ukraine, which started with the takeover of Crimea 10 years ago, has greatly changed the path of events. He’s acting like an emperor instead of being practical.

It’s amazing to think that since Vladimir Putin became leader, America has had five different presidents and Britain has had seven prime ministers.

An elderly man was arrested after he choked his wife in a hospital bed, ultimately leading to her death, because he could not afford her medical bills.

Ronnie Wiggs, 76, is charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of his wife, who died Saturday, May 4, in Independence, a Kansas City suburb, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Jackson County, Wiggs told police he killed the victim while she was at Centerpoint Medical Center for a new port for dialysis.

At around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, an off-duty police officer at a hospital in Independence, Missouri was called to the ICU due to an alleged assault.

The officer found a woman unresponsive and without a pulse, but hospital staff were able to revive her and transport her to the Intensive Care Unit, an Independence Police Department officer wrote in the affidavit.

According to court documents, medical staff told authorities that they overheard Ronnie Wiggs, the woman’s husband, saying, “I did it. I killed her. I choked her.”

Wiggs was arrested and taken to the Independence Police Department, according to WDAF.

Wiggs’ wife was not pronounced dead at the time of his arrest, but was later taken off life support due to no reported brain function shortly after.

After Wiggs allegedly choked her unconscious, he left the hospital.

The suspect told authorities that he later asked a relative to pick him up and take him back to the hospital.

Upon returning to the hospital, the relative and staff told police that Wiggs had admitted to choking and killing his wife, according to WDAF.

The station, citing court documents, reported that another individual reported finding “suspicious” injuries, as well as fresh wounds on the victim’s neck.

During an interview with detectives, police wrote, Wiggs said he choked his wife in the hospital bed, covering her nose and mouth to keep her from screaming.

Wiggs also allegedly admitted that he had attempted to kill his wife on two separate hospital and rehabilitation visits

On one occasion, he tried to strangle his wife while she was at a rehab facility, but “could not follow through with it.”

Court papers show Wiggs told police the victim woke up after he choked her and “told him not do that again.”

Wiggs allegedly told authorities that he killed his wife due to depression.

He added that he couldn’t take care of her or pay for her medical bills, according to the outlet.

On Tuesday, May 7, Wiggs was being held on $250,000 bond, prosecutors said, and was set to appear in court Thursday, May 9, for a hearing.

TikTok sues the US govt over new law banning the app if it isn’t sold to a US company

Social media app, TikTok on Tuesday, May 7, sued to block a new US law that could force a nationwide ban of the popular app.

Tiktok’s move comes after legal threats the company issued after US President Joe Biden signed the legislation last month.

The lawsuit sets up a historic legal battle, one that will determine whether US security concerns about TikTok’s links to China will be more important than the First Amendment rights of TikTok’s 170 million US users.

If TikTok loses the case, the company could be banned from US app stores unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the app to a non-Chinese entity by mid-January 2025.

In its petition filed at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, TikTok and Bytedance allege the new law is unconstitutional because it stifles Americans’ speech and prevents them from accessing lawful information.

The petition claims the US government “has taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning” the short-form video app in an unconstitutional exercise of congressional power.

“For the first time in history,” the petition said, “Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide.”

The lawsuit comes after years of US allegations that TikTok’s ties to China could expose Americans’ personal information to the Chinese government.

TikTok has strongly denied that it has ever given Chinese government officials access to US user data and says it has taken steps to protect that information by hosting the data on servers owned by US tech giant Oracle.

TikTok and ByteDance called the national security fears at the heart of the TikTok legislation “speculative and analytically flawed,” adding in the petition that the bill’s swift passage reflects how its congressional authors relied on “speculation, not ‘evidence,’ as the First Amendment requires,” to make their case.

The US government has not publicly presented any concrete evidence showing Chinese government access of TikTok data to date but US lawmakers have received classified briefings by national security officials behind closed doors.

John Steenhuisen: The man vowing to ‘rescue’ South Africa with the DA

South African opposition leader John Steenhuisen believes he has what it takes to eventually become president.

That is despite coming up against the thorny issue of race and the African National Congress’s 30-year grip on power.

For decades he has argued that his party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is the key to South Africa’s progress.

The centre-right movement emerged from the liberal white benches of the old apartheid parliament, positing itself as a liberal, racially inclusive alternative to the majority-black ANC.

Mr Steenhuisen joined the DA as an activist in the 1990s, when he was roughly 19 years old.

“I decided to go into politics because of my frustration with the status quo in our country, where South Africa’s immense potential was being squandered at the hands of an inept government,” he said in a 2020 interview.

A young Mr Steenhuisen enrolled on a course in politics and law at university but never graduated – something he was later mocked for by social media users and other politicians.

In a defiant speech to parliament, Mr Steenhuisen, then chief whip of the DA, said “financial and work pressures” had forced him to drop out.

“I’m not ashamed of this because I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a public representative,” he said.

Mr Steenhuisen certainly showed ambition as a budding politician – he was elected as a councillor for his home city of Durban aged 22 and is thought to be one of the youngest to have ever held this post.

From there, the future leader scaled the ranks of regional politics – that is until 2010, when he was forced to resign as the DA’s leader for the KwaZulu-Natal region after it emerged that he was having an affair.

At the time, Mr Steenhuisen was married but also romantically involved with a DA spokeswoman, Terry Kass Beaumont. Ms Beaumont also had a spouse – DA KwaZulu-Natal official Michael Beaumont.

Mr Steenhuisen’s infidelity did “no significant damage” to his career, Paddy Harper, a journalist with South Africa’s Mail & Guardian newspaper, tells the BBC.

Mr Harper notes that Mr Steenhuisen eventually married Ms Beaumont, which may have prevented the affair becoming a stain on the opposition leader’s legacy.

In 2011, shortly after his resignation, Mr Steenhuisen was elected to national parliament. Three years later, he became the DA’s chief whip.

At this point, the party was preparing to make a major change. The DA has long been perceived as a party that promotes the interests of white and coloured (as people of mixed race are known in South Africa) people, in a country where they make up just 7% and 8% of the population respectively. So, partly in an attempt to appeal to diversify its appeal, the DA appointed its first black leader.

The charismatic Mmusi Maimane was viewed as the party’s best shot at the presidency, but he quit just four years later.

As the DA reeled from his exit, Mr Maimane said the party was the wrong “vehicle” for uniting a South Africa that remains divided along racial lines 30 years after the end of white-minority rule.

Mr Steenhuisen was appointed as interim leader the following month – but what should have been an unquestionable triumph for this dedicated DA member was not without contention.

Social media users pointed out that the DA leadership was now all white, while DA officials who had quit alongside Mr Maimane warned the party was lurching back to the right.

When asked last year whether the DA’s image as a “fundamentally white party” was a structural issue, Mr Steenhuisen told the BBC: “People are looking beyond race towards competence, [the] ability to get things done and being able to deliver – that’s the game in town and that’s going to be the game in the next election.”

He opposes race quotas in the workplace – introduced by the ANC in a bid to close South Africa’s racial economic gap – calling them “crude” and unsuccessful.

On Mr Steenhuisen’s approach to racial issues, South African political analyst Robert Calland says: “He comes across as someone who is privileged, but unconscious, unaware of the context, unaware of the lived reality for most South Africans.”

This makes it hard for him to extend his appeal to black voters, who are still far more likely to be living in poverty than the white population.

South Africa was the world’s most unequal country in 2022, a situation partly driven by race, according to the World Bank.

Nevertheless, Mr Steenhuisen is clearly popular within the DA. He has been re-elected twice as party leader, receiving 80% or more of the vote each time.

Some analysts believe a portion of Mr Steenhuisen’s clout comes from Helen Zille, the DA’s former leader and still a major political figure within South Africa.

“Zille has continued to be the power behind the throne. Her attitude is that her presence is essential, not just for the DA, but for the future of democracy in South Africa,” Mr Calland says.

“Steenhuisen, I think, is to a large extent beholden to her. Her support was essential for him to become leader.”

A poll taken ahead of the 29 May elections put the DA’s support at 21.9% – not enough to beat the ANC, which is at 40.2%, although this is a huge fall for a party which has taken at least 50% of the vote in every election since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.

In an effort to win more than half of the vote needed to take power, Mr Steenhuisen has formed a coalition with a number of smaller parties.

He has also acknowledged he may need to join forces with the ANC itself, saying in March he would not rule out a deal with the governing party should it fail to get a majority in parliament.

Despite recognising the benefit of cross-party cooperation, Mr Steenhuisen has been known to pull no punches when it comes to rival parties.

Ahead of the election, he accused smaller political parties campaigning in Western Cape, where the DA is in power at the regional level, of seeking to loot the province in “the biggest bank heist you’ve ever seen”, local media reported.

He also said a possible coalition between the ANC and the radical Economic Freedom Fighters would lead to a “doomsday scenario”.

Mr Calland describes Mr Steenhuisen’s tone as “often very brutal”, but says despite his outspoken nature, the DA leader can be sensitive about criticism of his party.

Mr Harper agrees, saying: “He defends the party hard and he’s quite sensitive towards it… if you write something and he doesn’t like it, he will engage with it.”

Such “engagement” has taken place at press conferences or via phone calls to analysts or journalists, Mr Harper says.

But, he adds, “in a social environment” Mr Steenhuisen “can be fun”.

He proved just that in 2022, when he appeared on popular comedy show Podcast and Chill with MacG.

Mr Steenhuisen appeared at ease, drinking gin with the young hosts and cracking jokes that made the young hosts erupt with laughter.

Fans of the podcast reacted with surprise, describing Mr Steenhuisen as “hilarious”, “a cool guy” and “really smart” in the YouTube comments.

He is charismatic, teems with political credentials and pledges to “rescue” South Africa with two million new jobs, an end to rolling power cuts and a move towards greater privatisation.

But critics say he has blind spots when it comes to the all-important issue of race and with his reputation as an abrasive party leader, does Mr Steenhuisen have what it takes to win over young black voters, who might hold the key to this election?

He thinks so. When asked by the Mail & Guardian if he believed South Africa was “ready” for a white president, Mr Steenhuisen countered: “Was America ready for Barack Obama? Was the UK ready for Rishi Sunak? They both come from minority groupings in their country and I think both have performed admirably.”

West Ham’s Moyes to exit at the end of the season

West Ham manager David Moyes will depart from his position by mutual agreement once his contract concludes at the end of the season, the Premier League club announced on Monday.

Moyes, aged 61, secured West Ham’s first trophy in 43 years during his second tenure as manager by winning the Europa Conference League last season.

However, mounting pressure on the Scottish coach intensified amid the team’s recent string of poor performances, culminating in a 5-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

“I have really enjoyed working with everyone at West Ham, and I would like to thank the board for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club,” Moyes said in a statement.

“I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019.

“When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.

“I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years.

“I wish my eventual successor, the directors, the players, the staff, the fans, and everybody at West Ham, all the very best for the future.”

Sources have told ESPN that West Ham officials have held talks with Julen Lopetegui over the possibility of him taking over as head coach ahead of next season.

West Ham’s board confirmed the search for Moyes’ successor is underway and thanked him for his years of service.

“On behalf of everyone at West Ham United, I would like to offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to David for the contribution he has made to the football club during his time as manager,” joint-chairman David Sullivan said.

Moyes initially gained recognition as a coach at Preston North End and later during an impressive 11-year tenure at Everton. At Everton, he consistently managed to field competitive teams despite operating on a limited budget.

Moyes led Everton to a fourth-place finish in the 2004–05 Premier League season, earning him the prestigious League Managers Association (LMA) Manager of the Year award—the second of three LMA awards he would receive in his career.

His achievements at Everton attracted the attention of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who personally selected Moyes as his successor upon retiring in May 2013.

It does not make sense! On July 18, 2022, we advised Mr Hichilema and the UPND government that there was really no need to be in a rush to give away our minerals to foreign transnational mining corporations for next to nothing. Anglo American, Anglovaal, Glencore, Vendata, Mopani and other mining corporations are interested in our minerals because there are gigantic profits to be made now and in the future.

Today, the prices of copper and cobalt have risen dramatically, and so are their profits. How can we benefit from are minerals fully if we are giving tax holidays?

It takes 180 pounds of copper to make a Tesla or other electric vehicle. This is five times the amount of copper needed to make a combustion engine motor vehicle. It takes 450 pounds of copper to build a normal house, once you include electric appliances, wiring and fixtures. If you put solar panels on it that will take another 100 to 150 pounds of copper wiring. A solar farm used to generate energy requires five times the copper it takes for an equivalent natural, coal, or nuclear power plant.

  • If we are going to turn our cars into electric vehicles, we are going to need a lot more copper over the next ten years.
  • If we are going to build houses for all the millennials – the largest generation on the planet – we are going to need a lot more copper.
  • If renewables, such as wind and solar power, are used to build those things and supply energy then we are going to need a lot more copper.

This red metal is sometimes called Dr Copper because it has an uncanny ability to predict recessions and economic booms. The reason for this is that we unlikely to go into recession when we are in a building boom, whereas we are more likely to when we are not.

Industry, factories, homes, appliances and cars, all require copper, and that is never going to change because, if you look at the periodic table, you will see that there is no alternative to copper, except for silver. Silver conducts electricity better than copper but because it is so expensive it will never serve as a viable replacement. Plus, global copper reserves are estimated to be around 870,000,000 tonnes, whereas silver reserves are put at 530,000 tonnes.

Let us take this conversation further. Statistics show that 20 percent of the world’s population uses 50 percent of its copper; 13 percent of the population has no electricity; three out of four people on the planet – 75 percent – don’t have access to a car; so, if the 80 percent of the world that doesn’t currently use that much copper starts to do so as a result of increased energy needs – by buying appliances, electric cars, building houses and so on – then we will see a significant increase in the demand for copper. The price of copper, even though it has risen, will be so much higher when that demand increases.

And there is another factor. The EU has reacted to Russia’s war with the Ukraine by feverishly moving towards renewable energy, which, as we said above, requires five times the amount of copper as other energy sources. This will also spur the demand for electric vehicles. While recycling can meet up to 35 percent of current global copper consumption, we don’t have enough copper to recycle to satisfy increased renewable energy demands, plus, it takes a long time to bring copper mines online – around five to 10 years to market.

The upshot is that the demand for copper is going to continue increasing significantly and so is its price. Under these circumstances, it has never made sense to give tax breaks and other unnecessary incentives to transnational mining corporations. Why would we do that? Today, we are begging for help as though we can think, plan and see. The UPND has certainly not acted wisely. I can think of no reason why a government would do it, unless it was out of acting out of ignorance or corruption.

Kavindele strays into the Lion’s den

Excerpts from my book, One Zambia One Nation; how Presidents have navigated around the issue

If KK thought he had enough problems on his plate to deal with especially with the rise of the Frederick Chiluba led MMD which was already breathing heavily on his neck, then he was in for rude awakening. Mid-1980s, a reformist leader, Mikhail Gorbachev had taken over in the Soviet Union. He introduced sweeping reforms which entailed openness (glasnost) – allowing for enhanced freedom of speech and press while at the same time embarking on decentralising economic decision-making (perestroika) to move the country from its stagnation.

Perhaps buoyed up by events panning out in the birth place of UNIPs ideologies, some youthful members of the party’s central committee approached their peer, Enock Kavindele, and asked him to consider challenging KK for the party’s leadership position at the next convention. Kavindele was a renowned wealthy businessman, having started his business career in the 1970s when he established Woodgate Holdings Ltd; a company with a vast portfolio of services that included agriculture, real estate, tourism, mining and transportation. However, before he could come to any conclusion, he sought to have audience with the President.

“The way I see things your Excellency, UNIP does not stand any chance of winning the elections,” he calmly said to him, not sure whether the man would immediately explode and show him the door.

Prior to that, a fatigued KK had hinted to his close colleagues he was retiring from active politics. As a person who introduced one party politics, he wasn’t keen on being at helm as the country reverted back to multiparty politics. However, some old-timers in the central committee, who weren’t quite certain about the future, prevailed on him to rescind his decision. They were literally in tears as they pleaded with him not to throw-in the towel considering that the new government might withhold their retirement packages.

During this period of uncertainty when KK didn’t know who to trust, central committee meetings had to be held outside the Cabinet room in the garden just in case it was bugged to avoid any unauthorised information leaking out to the public. Unknown to them, one of the ministers who was also a member of the central committee was a Judas Iscariot. He would pass-on whatever was discussed during meetings to the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD). Clement Mwananshiku would actually be rewarded with an appointment as Ambassador to Germany after the change of government.

Kavindele wasn’t bothered to square it off with KK after all, he didn’t have any running contract with government, his books were equally clean while he was upto date with his taxes. But wait a minute? Who in their right frame of mind would take on mighty Kaunda? To his hardcore supporters, Kaunda was a demigod. One would actually often hear the chants of, “Kumulu ni Lesa, panshi ni Kaunda (roughly translated, in heaven it’s Kaunda, on earth it’s Kaunda). Kavindele had dared stray into the Lion’s den fully aware he risked being mauled. He was yet to pay the price.

During the party convention held at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe in 1991, he had to endure all sorts of insults and threats from fellow delegates. Although he was provided with state security, some elderly women somehow managed to find their way to his challet half-naked and burst into songs punctuated with graphic language. It was a tense atmosphere; the notorious vigilantes were baying for his blood. Before the day of reckoning though, Kavindele chickened-out of the race and left for Lusaka!

He would resign from UNIP and form his own political party – the United Democratic Party which he bankrolled single-handedly. In the ensuing elections, the party would win a good number of local government seats. Nevertheless, he would later disband his party and join ruling MMD.

“I would rather be near the King than being the King himself,” he would say.
