HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEKLY PRESS BRIEFING HELD BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA, HON CORNELIUS MWEETWA

Today, the Minister of Information and Media Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa held his weekly Government-Media engagement to discuss matters of national interest in Livingstone, Southern Province.

Below are the highlights

✅ Government has expressed gratitude to all the women who participated in yesterday’s peaceful and successful celebration which is consistent with the New Dawn Administration stance of upholding order and achieving national peace.

✅The Minister also commended Women from all political parties that participated in the International Women’s Day celebration yesterday.

✅ Government understands how crucial peace is to the harmonious coexistence of stakeholders, citizens, and the advancement of democracy in the nation.

✅ The Minister encouraged everyone to imitate the harmony that was seen during yesterday’s International Women’s Day celebration as the country celebrates Youth Day on 12th March, 2024.

✅ Nonetheless, government is aware that International Women’s Day was observed in the middle of the drought, which is a national disaster. The national disaster is a natural occurrence and not something that is solely human-caused.

✅ Government will in the next few days conduct a maize harvest focus which will inform the nation the extent to which the disaster has damaged what could have been un- precedented bumper harvest.

✅ The Minister observed that government has put in place a number of response measures to mitigate the disaster among them :
1. Re- alignment of the budget and channelling more resources towards humanitarian relief interventions.
2. Commercial farmers to venture into contract farming to produce winter maize.
3. The Defence Forces to upscale the production of maize to mitigate the drought situation
4. Government through the Committee of Ministers on Disaster Management led by the Vice President and through Cabinet agreed to introduce a tax waiver on irrigation equipment that has to be imported in the country immediately.
5. Engaging local and international partners to offer support in whatever form available to provide the needed relief.

✅ The government will target water bodies that are unaffected for irrigation despite claims on social media that irrigation will not be possible due to the drought.

✅ The Government of Republic of Tanzania has officially communicated to Zambian Government of its availability to export maize to Zambia.

✅ The Republic of Uganda has also indicated that it has produced sufficient maize which it is willing and ready to export to the Republic of Zambia.

✅ However, the Minister indicted that the importation of maize from other countries will only happen after the Food Reserve Agency ( FRA) mops up all the locally produced maize to ensure that government’s money rotates within the local economy.

✅ The Minister indicated that, the New Dawn Administration sold the maize from the previous harvest which was in stock because maize has a limited life span.

Energy/Electricity Status
✅ According to current statistics, only 20% of water is being posted into the Kariba Dam for power generation. Therefore, Government is urging households and farmers to adopt alternate power sources like solar electricity.

Forex
✅ The Minister noted that the foreign exchange rate will stabilise when the capacity to produce and export becomes stable.

Good Governance
✅ Mr. Mweetwa said the Transparency International of Zambia (TIZ) study showing that corruption has declined under the New Dawn Administration is accurate.

✅ He has urged people who claim that the TIZ’s statistics on corruption during the New Dawn Administration are untrue to confront the organization, arguing that their claims are based only on vacuous political rhetoric rather than actual data.

Agribusiness
✅ Government has placed a ban on the exportation of feed of any description to whose ingredients emanate from maize

In the next few days, Government through the Ministry of Information and Media, Ministry of Agriculture and Defence wings will be visiting selected FRA maize storages in order to ascertain the current levels of maize stocks in the nation. The team will also visit some areas that have been affected by drought.

✅The Minister has assured the nation that government is working round the clock to ensure that citizens have enough food saying there should be no panic buying of maize.

Socialist Party reacts to HH’s ‘you don’t get pregnant by mistake’ remark

SP reacts to HH’s ‘you don’t get pregnant by mistake’ remark

SP deputy secretary general Antonio Mwanza writes:

President Hakainde SAMMY Hichilema has been quoted in some sections of the media saying and I quote, “You don’t get pregnant by MISTAKE, you get pregnant because you want to get pregnant” end of quote.

The statement by the President is not only incorrect but very misleading. It’s not true that everyone who gets pregnant does so by choice, NO. You can be raped and get pregnant; you can get pregnant by having casual sex in the name of having fun. Let’s not mislead young and inexperienced girls with such incorrect assumptions.

Zambia is grappling with a serious challenge of teen pregnancies and early marriages. We have too many teen pregnancies; and the majority of these pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted pregnancies.

Is the president saying that the thousands of our young girls who are getting pregnant are doing so by choice? Some, yes but the majority are not.

Let’s preach correct messages, especially to our young adults. As parents and leaders, we should be in the forefront educating and cautioning our teenage girls about the dangers of casual sex, one of which is ‘unplanned and unwanted pregnancies’; we shouldn’t be misleading them that they can only get pregnant when and if they want, NO.

Six research studies carried out in Zambia (two quantitative, two qualitative, and two mixed methods) have been reviewed. Factors at an individual’s level such as early or child marriage, exposure to media, knowledge about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and contraception, contraceptive use, as well as risky sexual behaviours were found to be significantly associated with adolescent pregnancy. Peer pressure, educational attainment, household wealth, and the power dynamics of the household head were identified as the major socio-economic factors alongside socio-cultural, gender and sexual norms amongst other environmental and contextual factors. Policy level factors identified were lack and limited access to SRH information and services by adolescents, including an enabling legal environment.

ZAMBIA SELECTED TO HOST THE LEAST DEVELOPING COUNTRIES FUTURE FORUM

ZAMBIA SELECTED TO HOST THE LEAST DEVELOPING COUNTRIES FUTURE FORUM

Zambia has been selected by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Countries, and Small Island Developing States-UN-OHRLLS- to host the 2025 Least Developing Countries Future Forum.

The LDC Forum is a platform that brings together researchers and policymakers to explore how to harness innovation, digitalization, and technology to foster structural transformation and development.

The selection of Zambia to host the meeting is a result of Zambia’s innovative structural transformation agenda being spearheaded by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati says the Government was happy with the selection saying the structural transformation agenda on fiscal credibility has appropriately put the country on the world stage.

He said Zambia’s debt restructuring model is now being used by other African Countries. He says the restructuring of debt will result in the reduction of the annual payment from $750 million to $75 million per annum.

The Minister further cited the Government’s decision to come up with the Public Private Dialogue meant to resolve rigidities that were slowing down the wheels of economic development as another pillar in Zambia’s structural transformation Agenda.

He said the Government was now simplifying regulations and enacting legal frameworks that would reduce administrative bottle necks that were hindering the private sector from being the engine of economic growth.

The Minister said the other pillars in Zambia’s Structural transformation were Internet Connectivity, Free education, and Public-Private partnerships.

On Internet Connectivity, the Minister said the Government had deployed the use of Sate lite technology because the use of conversational technology was expensive and not accessible in many areas.

He said so far 90 percent of the country had internet connectivity.

The Minister said this in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia when he transited from Finland.

Hon. Mutati who was in the company of his Permanent Secretary, Eng. Brilliant Habeenzu was received at Bole International Airport by Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA, Mrs. Rose Sakala.

Museveni prepares for 7th term

0

President Museveni, who is also the chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), recently launched the update of the party’s voters’ register, sending a strong signal that he will be seeking a seventh term in 2026.

The president renewed his party membership and signed the dummy register to mark the launch of the exercise, in which the party hopes to add more members to the 11 million faithful it has, starting next week.

The president’s making it a big deal out of it signalled the launch of his bid for a seventh term, after keeping the country guessing on whether he will contest or back his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for the top seat.

“NRM is a party that came with a principle of understanding people’s needs, which have got a potential solution, but it has not been identified or, if identified, implemented,” he said after the launch.

Senior presidential adviser on political affairs, Hajat Hadijah Namyalo, while meeting party leaders, district chairpersons, and registrars, urged for support President Museveni’s bid for re-election, while the party Electoral Commission chairman Dr Tanga Odoi said the President is the only NRM flag-bearer for the 2026 election, ending speculation and any doubts about the NRM candidate at a time some politicians had started pushing for Gen Muhoozi to carry the flag.

NRM Secretary-General Richard Todwong asked the President to continue his leadership.

“As a party, we are committed to make sure that you continue with your legacy and good deeds and we pledge before everybody that the party is still asking for your goodwill to offer yourself in 2026,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the opposition camp, there seems to be no clear challenger, with four-time presidential candidate and former Forum for Democratic Change President, Dr Kizza Besigye, heading back to the grassroots to consult on whether he should form a new party, a decision he hopes will be made in the coming two months after the nationwide meetings that started this week.

The chaos in FDC, which he formed and led for several years, did not allow for reconciliation after the party members accused the leaders of receiving money from President Museveni to weaken the party during the 2021 presidential and parliamentary elections, allegations that broke the party into two factions.

In the National Unity Platform, the party that sent shockwaves in the ruling party after defeating it in nearly all constituencies in the Central region — the heart of the country that hosts even the capital Kampala — during the 2021 elections, the fault lines that started forming a few months back are widening more.

Party leader Robert Kyagulanyi is fighting to dislodge the former leader of opposition in Parliament, who is also the party’s deputy president for Buganda region, from a parliamentary position.

He says Mathias Mpuuga, who received Ush500 million ($128,635) of the Ush1.7 billion ($437,360) shared out among five commissioners, including Speaker Anita Among, as “service award,” should resign from the commission, for allowing to partake in the abuse of office, misuse of public funds and blatant wastage of public funds.

Kyagulanyi, as the leader of the party with the majority of opposition members in parliament appointed the leader of the opposition and recently replaced Mr Mpuuga with Joel Ssenyonyi, in what political observers termed as the culmination of a protracted conflict between the two leaders. Mr Kyagulanyi says Mpuuga had been called to explain the sharing money at Parliament and that he regretted the actions, apologised, and promised to consult before stepping down.

“We all know that a matter involving huge sums of money, which is not legislated but a matter of negotiation normally involves give and take. The people of Uganda would love to know what Mpuuga gave in exchange for this big favour,” Kyagulanyi said.

But Mr Mpuuga did not come back to explain and rejected the call to resign. While appearing on a radio talk show last Saturday, he said he has no regrets for getting the money and won’t resign.

He accused Kyagulanyi of dictatorial tendencies and wondered how he would conduct himself if he got state power; where he could access guns, power, and authority. He described the NUP boss as an inexperienced leader, scared of his popularity and experience and sees him as a threat.

“The campaign to assassinate my character is deliberate. It’s well-orchestrated and well-funded. I am ready for the worst, if it takes this sacrifice to return sanity and common sense to our politics,” Mpuuga said. “I decline the cowardly call on me to resign as a parliamentary Commissioner, based on spite, and deliberate misrepresentation for mischievous reasons.”

But President Museveni keeps clear of the fights and accusations and waits for the right moment to reassure the public that he is their saviour from bad leadership from within or outside his party.

Mpuuga said the decision to award him and other commissioners the money was not an individual decision but by the commission of which he is a member.

“The decisions of the commission are not personal but collective in nature, and for anyone to purport to make their personal decisions of an individual is a deliberate, well-crafted malicious campaign designed for character assassination,” Mpuuga argued.

But President Museveni keeps clear of the fights and accusations and waits for the right moment to reassure the public that he is their saviour from bad leadership from within or outside his party.

There has never been a time more right for Museveni to get a resounding win than 2026 when all political parties either have been silenced or are engaged in internal battles.- Daily Monitor

UK Zimbabwean found hiding inside a coffin during court case over missing USD25 million

Qoki Zindlovukazi business owner, Sithule Tshuma addressed Justice Isles in a coffin enclosure and lost the first round of the case against her on Tuesday after claiming her life is in danger from a large crowd of angry Zimbabweans when there were only 3 people in the courtroom: the complainant Sibo, journalist Simba Chikanza and Sibo’s blood brother.

Miss Tshuma demanded saying she cannot access the court except while housed in a coffin through which only the judge can see her body . The court had to build for her a whole coffin structure so she can hide her face from the complainant and the rest of the people inside court .

Miss Tshuma is accused of making USD25Million from selling land that does not belong to her.

There was no one else either inside or outside court interested in her case, and yet Miss Tshuma even demanded a special entrance and exit for herself.

When the session began at around 11am she tried to get Simba Chikanza removed from his role as a McKenzie friend for the complainant saying this is because he is a journalist, who has been writing things that are untrue. Her request was turned down as the judge said he is not doing any journalism inside court and even if he was, he would still be allowed in the session.

The judge insisted the case is of public interest and there are more complainants beyond Sibo (surname withheld), which that once the final ruling is made the effect will extend to all those other people.

Miss Tshuma presented an incomplete bundle that didn’t have her own statement, and when asked why she has failed to do the task of supplying her own witness account, she said to Justice Isles “I was overwhelmed.”

The judge ordered Miss Tshuma to pay the complainant costs of several hundreds of pounds being the complainant’s hotel and transport costs.

Miss Tshuma also claimed she has evidence from the government of Zimbabwe to prove she truly sold a stand to Sibo, and even those papers the judge said they need to be presented at once.

The judge indicated the three people Miss Tshuma has received witness support will need to attend in person.

It is the complainant (or applicant)’s case that Miss Tshuma’s title deeds are invalid and her entire business is fraudulent from inception.

The judge repeated the term, “public interest” over three times as she said she (the Judge) cannot make the ruling on the day as she wants to give Miss Tshuma the opportunity to submit her late statement and everything else because once the ruling is made, more people will be affected by it, suggesting that there are more people who will either benefit or lose from it.

It was first suggested that the case be adjourned to later in the afternoon, but Justice Isles said there is a long waiting list so the best option in all the circumstances will be to give Miss Tshuma several days to prepare.

Miss Tshuma will now need to supply her statement and pay the complainant by the 19th March 2024, and attend court in April.

The case was adjourned to a date after the 2nd April 2024.

Nigerians can’t eat anymore; how dare you allow charlatans to hypnotise you!

0

It seems we are so gullible as a nation that if self-acclaimed prophets, or papas if you like, hoodwinked us to drink out own urine or indeed jump off atop Findeco House with a promise to go straight to heaven despite being habitual sinners – envious, gluttonous, murderers, adulterers, fornicators, lazy or absolutely pregnant with pride, we’d do so without any qualms!

Why do we say so?

Whenever a Nigerian ‘prophet’ going by a queer name, Seer 1, says he’s going live on his Facebook page to reveal what God has been saying to him about!our country, thousands of us will abandon whatever we were doing and get glued to our gadgets and listen to his instructions. Next, you’ll see folks sharing these live broadcasts or groups gathering in markets, bus stations, bars and offices to discuss the impact of what the ‘man of god’ had said on our nation. What sort of nonsense is this?

When you hear Seer 1 or the likes of other fake prophets such as Amata ‘reveal’ so-called prophecies about our nation, some of it actually bordering on interfering in our internal affairs, you would think it’s all bliss about their country…….they’re enjoying heaven on earth!

Well, to shame the Devil; recently, there was a news item on BBC News Africa about a widespread protest in Nigeria under the banner of the Nigerian Labour Congress, the country’s largest labour movement. The two day protest saw massive crowds choke up the streets of the capital Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other major cities to register their displeasure over the current economic crisis the country is embroiled in marred by soaring inflation and high cost of living!

“Nigerians can’t eat anymore, Nigerians can’t pay rent, Nigerians can’t pay bus fares!” An emotionally charged lady laments.

A well built man, literally in tears, chips in, “we’ve suffered enough, we’re tired of suffering. The value of our currency has been reduced to nothing, but toilet paper!”

According to BBC, the country is experiencing over 300% increase in the price of essential commodities such as rice, maize meal, millet and eggs. And despite being a top producer of oil in Africa, the price of fuel has been spiralling through the roof tops!

Isn’t this surely a mouthful for the likes of Seer 1? Is it fair for this wannabe prophet to be much concerned about the overpowering stench in his country – endemic corruption, Boko haram, 419 fraud, abductions and kidnappings, dastardly crimes among others other than poking his running nose in the sweet aroma emanating from our beloved country?

Give us a break; our country is still reeling from 7 years of ‘kaponya’ leadership – we were gassed in our homes, our markets were gutted, students were robbed of allowances and bursaries, PF cadres reigned supreme, civil service jobs only went to those with connections to those in power, independent media such as The Post and Prime TV were shut down, investigative journalists such as Sukwa had themselves peed into their mouths, certain regions were starved of development while government jobs were reserved for specific ethnic groupings! What more can we ask for?

Fellow citizens, stop being dumb! Why should you allow a foreigner not only to hypnotise us but decide our destiny as well when his country is literally falling apart?

In our next offering; we talk about waiting for a ‘breakthrough’ at the prayer mountain!

Rejecting Division: Uniting in Support of Hon. Robert Kalimi’s Healing Process

Rejecting Division: Uniting in Support of Hon. Robert Kalimi’s Healing Process

By Mandy Thelma Kasonde Kabanga Mutale

As someone who traces my roots back to Mungwi Kayambi Mission within Malole constituency, I want to share my heartfelt support for Chief Makasa’s recent statement regarding Hon. Robert Kalimi’s recovery. Chief Makasa’s words carry weight because of his deep connection to our community and his genuine concern for its well-being.

In times of difficulty, Chief Makasa’s leadership stands out as a source of wisdom and guidance. His call for us to come together and support Hon. Kalimi during his recovery period is a reflection of his caring nature and his belief in the strength of our community.

With Chief Makasa’s endorsement of Hon. Kalimi’s progress, the residents of Malole constituency, should stand united and show support. Let’s put aside any differences we may have and work together to ensure Hon. Kalimi makes a full recovery and that our constituency continues to grow and thrive.

As a concerned member of our community, I strongly condemn the calls being made to the Speaker of the National Assembly to declare Hon. Robert Kalimi’s seat vacant. Such actions are not only insensitive but also disregard the significant progress Hon. Kalimi has made in his recovery journey.

It is disappointing to witness individuals or groups prioritize political agendas over basic human decency and compassion. Hon. Kalimi’s near-fatal accident was a tragic event, and it is both unfair and unjust to exploit his medical condition for political gain.

Instead of fueling division and discord, we should be rallying behind Hon. Kalimi and supporting him in his recovery process. Let us focus on extending empathy and solidarity to him and his family during this challenging time, rather than engaging in opportunistic maneuvers that serve no constructive purpose.

What happened to us? Zambia was known for only good people who despite their differences in times of crisis they will stand together in one accord? We can still be that people by refraining from further politicizing Hon. Kalimi’s health situation and to demonstrate respect and empathy towards him and his family. It is imperative that we uphold the principles of decency and humanity in our actions and interactions, especially during moments of adversity.

We are a good people and surely despite everyone we can still be good!

In bemba we say “ichili pamunobe lelo mailo chili pali iwee”

For a year I watched my late father struggle in his health after a simple accident at the mine! Many expected him to be retired on health grounds but even his Boss’ then at Mopani didn’t agree instead they gave him chance and his recovered fully and went back to Work and after many years he reached the normal retirement.

Look at where he is coming from and thank God for the tremendous progress he has made so far. Give Hon. Kalimi a break he is getting better and will be back soon.

God has continued to shame you by proving to some of you stone hearted people that what he cannot do does not exist!

Iran seizes US tanker with $50 million of oil onboard

0

An Iranian court has issued an order confiscating a crude oil cargo from the Advantage Sweet tanker a year after the country’s navy forcibly stopped the ship. It is the latest example of “tit for tat” retaliation by the Iranians against the U.S. and Western sanctions imposed in 2018 during the Trump administration.

Media reports from Iran are alternately referring to the cargo or the tanker as American, although the ultimate owners of the vessel registered in the Marshall Islands is a Chinese leasing company that is part of the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. Built in 2012, the vessel is 159,000 dwt and is managed by a Turkish company, Genel Denizcilik Nakliyati for Advantage Tankers of Switzerland. At the time of the seizure in April 2023, it was operating under charter to Chevron.

The vessel loaded a partial cargo of refined product in Kuwait departing on April 25, 2023, bound for Houston. Two days later, Iranian forces boarded the tanker outbound in the Gulf of Oman and directed it into Iranian waters where reports said it was “confiscated” under a court order. Iran justified its actions by citing a “collision of an unknown ship with an Iranian vessel in the waters of the Persian Gulf, which resulted in the loss of two people and the injury of several other crew members.” They alleged at the time that the Advantage Sweet stuck the vessel and kept on sailing.

The Iranian media now reports the court ruled after a lawsuit was filed by Iranian patients suffering from a rare genetic skin disorder, Epidermolysis Bullosa. The suit reportedly is based on the refusal of a Swedish manufacturer of specialized bandages and dressing to sell the supplies to Iran due to the U.S. and Western sanctions. There was no mention of the previous accusations of the collision with the Iranian vessel.

Iran says the cargo was then confiscated under the court order. They are valuing the cargo at approximately $50 million.

Timing of the seizure of the Advantage Sweet came shortly after reports emerged that the U.S. had moved to seize an Iranian oil cargo of approximately one million barrels loaded aboard a Greek tanker the Suez Rajan which at the time was anchored off Singapore. The U.S. action was taken on behalf of the families of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York and Washington D.C. The cargo was ultimately offloaded in Texas and sold with the proceeds going to the compensation fund.

The seizure of the Advantage Sweet was one of several reported by Iran which also included the January 2024 seizure of the St Nikolas (ex. Suez Rajan) which had been directly involved in the 2023 incident. Iran had vowed retaliation for the taking of its oil cargo.

Agence France Press is saying that Iran is currently holding a total of 90 crewmembers and has seized five tankers. Previously, Iran held Greek tankers when it was involved in a dispute with Greece which impounded a tanker that Iran claimed ownership of after it previously was identified as a Russian tanker. The U.S. lost a court battle in Greece to also seize the cargo from that vessel.

LET US REFLECT ON HOW ZAMBIA GOT TO THE TOP THREE MOST DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD UNDER THE V-DEM REPORT 2024

  • LET US REFLECT ON HOW ZAMBIA GOT TO THE TOP THREE MOST DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD UNDER THE V-DEM REPORT 2024

By Mark Simuuwe

Let us all reflect on this huge achievement of our beloved 🇿🇲 Zambia .

What could be the reasons and what has changed about Zambia’s democracy ? What did the international organization see in Zambia , which is rare in many countries today ? How did we get to the top in two years ? What has HH and his team done ? These questions can be answered in this way :

1. Removal of criminal defamation of the President from Zambian laws has enhanced freedom of expression and has made Zambia’s President the most tolerant leader ;

2. Enactment of Access to Information Bill into Law demonstrates government commitment to being accountable to its own citizens;accountability is one of the beacons of democracy.

3. Free and Fair by-elections devoid of brandishing of guns , machetes , bloodshed , contrary to the case in the PF leadership;

4. Government putting an end to thuggery behavior, contrary to a situation in which citizens could be attacked for merely wearing opposition party regalia under Edgar Lungu’s reign ;

5. Media houses in Zambia are featuring people with dissenting views even more often than the ruling party panelists ;

6. HH’s pronouncements and commitment to ensuring there is a free press in Zambia ;

7. A lack of interference in the media by the state under the UPND New Dawn Administration ;

8. Tolerance to so many critical voices ;

9.Hesitation in applying a seriously oppressive cyber security and cyber crime law in cramping down dissenting views ;

10. Allowing the due process of the law in matters relating to prosecution of the previous government officials appearing in court for various offences;

11. An end to tramped up charges;

12. Removal of the death penalty by the UPND new Dawn administration;

13. Transparency in the procurement Process , thus creating more accountability which is a pillar of a successful democratic dispensation;

14. Openness in debt restructuring discussions which also opens up for accountability;

15. Stoppage to use of police to kill citizens for their rights as was the case under the previous leadership;

16. Running a Balanced cabinet which represents all the regions , contrary to a regional PF cabinet ;

17. A recruitment process into civil service which is representative of the whole country;

18. CDF funding to all regions in the country without discrimination , contrary to what used to be there under ECL and PF leadership ;

19. Fairness in the distribution of resources in general across all regions e.g all provinces to have New Airports this year and we’re all given new Landcruisers per constituency for the police and not what used to happen .

20. President’s commitment to uniting the country at every platform.

21. For the first time , the President is not censoring journalists when it comes to press conference questions – he has allowed the media to quiz him openly .

22. By not arresting all those who persecuted him without any cause , after spending 127 days in prison , HH has demonstrated true statesmanship to the world .

Malawi is a failed country that can’t even print its own passports and has a president but no leader- Mutharika

Former president Peter Mutharika yesterday reiterated his desire to be on the ballot in 2025 General Election to address economic challenges facing the country under his successor President Lazarus Chakwera.

“We are ready to end this oppression and take Malawi back on the path of development, back on the path of hope and I, Arthur Peter Mutharika, am ready to lead the DPP to victory in the election next year,” he said.

“Malawi is now a failed State. We can’t feed our own people; we can’t print our passports and driving licences… We can’t see where we are going; we have become oppressed in our own country. Malawi has a State president but has no leader and a leader is what we want.”

Speaking at his Page House during a press briefing, Mutharika, who first announced that he would be the DPP torchbearer in 2025 at the Mulhako wa Alhomwe in October last year, said the country has degenerated into a leadership crisis resulting in citizens experiencing myriad challenges, ranging from hunger to rising prices of basic commodities.

His affirmation of the 2025 aspirations came barely two days after the Malawi Congress Party National Executive Committee announced that it had settled on Chakwera to lead the party in the next elections.

The former president, who served between 2014 and 2020, claimed Malawi has plunged into the depth of darkness and is a nation in sorrow and pain because of the politically orchestrated violence targeting DPP followers.

“We, either, unite and end this oppression, or we all perish. But I have good news for you. The good news is that, we in the DPP are ready to govern this country again,” said Mutharika.

He claimed his party was now more united because traitors who, he alleged, were sponsored by MCP left and now the DPP has no camps but “one DPP under the leadership of APM”.

“MCP knows cannot defeat us in the election because all their strategies to eliminate me from the race have failed. They manufactured cases to arrest and convict me so that I don’t stand again and they failed. They sponsored traitors to take away the party; they have failed; now they want to introduce the age limit bill so that I don’t stand, they will fail again.”

Several DPP officials had earlier expressed interest to try their luck at the DPP convention. They include Chiradzulu South parliamentarian Joseph Mwanamvekha, former Reserve Bank Governor Dalitso Kabambe and DPP vice-president for the Eastern Region Bright Msaka.

Kabambe and Msaka could not be reached yesterday but when asked if he would contest the party’s presidency at the DPP convention slated for this July, after Mutharika announced his candidacy for the 2025 presidential election, Mwanamvekha said he would only provide a response after hearing what the former president said.

But in a separate interview, DPP secretary general Clement Mwale said Mutharika’s desire to be on the ballot in 2025 does not mean closing the door on aspirants at the party’s national convention.

Mwale told our sister newspaper The Nation of February 6 2024 that the party plans to hold its elective convention in July.

But reacting to Mutharika’s claims, MCP spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma said a good leader needs to prioritise the well-being of their citizens, promote economic growth and uphold democratic values.

“Chakwera is the leader that Malawi needed. Under the circumstances, we are in, with all these disasters, if we were still in the thieving government of DPP, people would have been dying of hunger… MCP will surprise these jealous people come 2025 General Election.”

8 HOURS LOAD SHEDDING TO CAUSE SERIOUS ECONOMIC FRACTURES – KAMPYONGO

8 HOURS LOAD SHEDDING TO CAUSE SERIOUS ECONOMIC FRACTURES – KAMPYONGO

THE sudden implementation of the eight hours load shedding programme shall cause devastating economic fractures particularly on small-scale businesses such as salons, barbershops and wielders unless Government finds means of how it shall mitigate the suffering of citizens, Stephen Kampyongo has said.

Mr Kampyongo, the Opposition Chief Whip says Zambians are waiting for the miracles the UPND had promised while in opposition of abundant electricity and food.

Mr Kampyongo, the Patriotic Front Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament said in an interview that the 8 hours load shedding was likely to cause serious economic stress among Zambians unless Government went into the importation of electricity and sale it to citizens at a subsidised rate as a means of mitigation.

He recalled that while in the opposition, the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema had all the solutions to the electricity challenges the country had faced in 2015 to the extent that they had proposed the construction of canals from Luapula to the Kafue River for power generation.

“Zambia is in trouble. People are waiting to see the miracles they were promised by people they believed were the messiah to their economic challenges. When the PF in government were confronted with a drought in 2015 and 2016, the UPND had brilliant ideas of how such could be managed,” Mr Kampyongo.

“You remember the lecture we got from President Hichilema in opposition about how Dubai, which never receives rain could have electricity throughout the year uninterrupted.

Garry Nkombo, the then chairperson on Energy Committee went as far as suggesting the construction of a canal and diverting rivers to Kafue to boost electricity generation.

So, let the UPND not hide behind their fingers and assume they will not be seen for who they are…liars,” he said.

He said Zambians had not forgotten the promises the UPND made about making electricity abundant but were disappointed that load shedding had returned even after President Hichilema had bragged of having ended load shedding in the first eight months in government.

Mr Kampyongo said the government should have prepared citizens than ambushing them with an eight-hour load shedding schedule at a time when they were being subjected to high cost of living, high cost of fuel and other basic needs.

“What will happen to small businesses with this eight-hour load shedding? This sudden announcement, how are we going to meet the target of producing three million metric tonnes of copper with this duration of load shedding? This will heavily affect the economy. The UPND should have planned about this and the best is that government should import electricity and sell to Zambians at a subsidised rate,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He said government was never in the business of making profit but to serve its citizens, recalling that that the PF while in government imported expensive electricity and sold it to citizens at a subsidized rate.

“As things are, with Indeni killed which was providing fuels for the production of about 100 megawatts through Ndola Energy, what is going to happen to the industry? When in leadership, we should always avoid hypocrisy,” Mr Kampyongo said.

I WAS YOUR HERO, WHEN I SPOKE FOR YOU, TODAY, I SPEAK AGAINST YOUR BAD GOVERNANCE, YOU GIVE ME MAXIMUM CHARGES
====================
Kindly ask President Hichilema, or his agents, to disclose how much he paid me for speaking for him when he was arrested for treason.

You can also ask all those that I spoke for how much they gave me. I can mention many, but they know themselves. The point is that I speak out when something is wrong.

I spoke out when things were wrong during BaLungu and they arrested me, but I am sure they now appreciate what I was talking about because they are out of power.

It won’t be long before President Hichilema is out of power and he will appreciate me, for what I am talking about now.

It won’t be long that many of those guys in State House, including Gilbert Phiri, the DPP will yearn for my voice like water in the desert. And I promise you, I will defend you unless you have committed a crime.

I have not committed a crime, I am just telling you the truth and you know it.

Some people accuse me, of speaking for money, but I only wish they would know how I suffer for being the voice of reason, justice and fairness for all.

How I wish that many of you would look at me as a person sacrificing everything, my family and my entire life for the good of the Country. But it’s fine, that’s why it is called #sacrifice.

TAYALI THE PUBLIC LAWYER OF THE PUBLIC COURT OF OPINIONS!!!

Tutwa acknowledged his 14 children born out of wedlock- side chick

THE late Tutwa Ngulube’s side chick Chuma Kuntepa says she and other mothers of the 14 ‘disputed’ children of the deceased, availed his sisters with birth records to prove that their brother had accepted them.

She said the paternity of the said children was put to rest by the Administrator General where the mothers of the children were asked to provide under five cards and birth certificates in accordance with the provisions of the Children’s Code Act, to which the mothers complied.

In this matter Kuntepa has sued the late Ngulube’s sister Tawanda Tafwakose Ngulube and his widow Mupeta Glenda Sokontwe who are administratrix of his estate, demanding that his properties be equally shared among his children.

Suing on behalf of the children as their guardian, Kutepa wants the Court to order that the distribution of the estate to the minors be done under the strict and direct supervision of the Administrator General.

Kuntepa is seeking an order that shares for some beneficiaries should be transferred to the minors.

She argued that the late lawyer’s sisters have been reluctant to distribute the estate yet they were benefiting more from the monthly apportionments.

But in their defense the administratrix said though their brother might have lived like king Solomon, it is difficult to identify his offspring as some women who claim the late lawyer fathered their children had children as young as two months old.

“We begun the process of identifying the beneficiaries under the estate of the deceased as it turned out that the deceased had many children outside wedlock, which were not known to the family of the deceased,” Tawanda and Mupeta stated.

“The process of identifying beneficiaries even became more complicated on account that one woman who claimed that the deceased fathered her child is married and the named child was born during her marriage with her current husband.”

They said they had to consult with lawyers and the office of the administrator general hence the reason they cannot distribute the estate until they are sure about the paternity.

But in reply Kuntepa said the two have deliberately failed to produce before court, accurate information relating to some of the properties.

She said a search at PACRA reveals that Ngulube was a shareholder in various companies, some of which are still active while others are not.

“A simple search at RTSA reveals more motor vehicles listed under the law firm company, and others listed under the names and various companies the deceased has an interest in Sungheti Mining Limited: 500,000 shares, active, Stegafreds Investments Limited, active,”Kuntepa explained.

“T.S.Stores :active, Sonnets Stores limited with 40,000 shares, active, Melodious Sonnets food industries, 4,900 shares , active, Golden Sonnets Hotel limited, 10,000 shares, active, Zambia Mineral Ore and Gemstone Marketing Company limited : 5,000,000 shares, active”

She said the managers of the estate have neglected to secure the late Ngulube’s assets in the past one year since his death in December 2022 and as a result, the estate has lost out on most of the plots from Meanwood Kwamena in Lusaka which were in excess of 40 and the estate has now only been offered 10 plots by Lucho Estate.

“At the meeting with the Administrator General on September 19, 2023, eight of the mothers produced the the relevant documents except for the second respondent,” Kuntepa said.

She claimed that about a K100, 000 that was received from the estate was not accounted for to show how it was distributed to the minors.

Kuntepa stated that Tawanda is still in possession of Ngulube’s properties, an act which amounts to depriving the beneficiaries of the estate of their inheritance which is a criminal offence…

LUSAKA DIVISION SCORPION TEAM SHOOT DÊAD 4 CRIMINALS

March 9 2024

Yesterday the March 8, 2024, the Lusaka Division Scorpion Team responded to the growing concerns from the public regarding motor vehicle break-ins at shopping malls across Lusaka. The team, patrolling the Fox dale Mall area along Zambezi Road, encountered a suspicious purple Toyota Ractis with double number plates (AJE 2806 covering the original one) carrying four male occupants.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the occupants evaded the police. During the chase, another white Mark X, with an unknown number plate, sped away. The Scorpion Team prioritized pursuing the purple Ractis.

In the pursuit along Zambezi Road, officers fired several warning shots to halt the motor vehicle. The car eventually stopped near Ngwerere farms, and the occupants fled into a nearby farm. In the ensuing confrontation, four criminals were shot, and one, identified as Gift Musonda of Matero, a notorious individual on the list of most wanted criminals for offenses including Aggravated Robbery, theft from Motor Vehicles, and theft from persons, was among the fatally wounded.

The identities of the other three deceased individuals, estimated to be aged between 20 and 30, are yet to be determined.

Upon searching the vehicle, the following items were recovered:

1. A green backpack with a pair of number plates (AFB 3281).
2. 2 empty bottles of benylin.
3. A packet of disposable medical face masks.
4. A sachet of suspected marijuana.
5. 2 screwdrivers.
6. A broken car key.
7. A black toy pistol.
8. 2 metal T-bars.
9. An iron bar.
10. One industrial cutter.
The injured criminals were immediately transported to the University Teaching Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The bodies have been deposited in the mortuary, awaiting identification, postmortem examinations, and subsequent burial arrangements.
The vehicle, used by the now-deceased criminals, has been secured and is currently parked at the Lusaka Division Headquarters. An inquiry file has been opened to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This incident occurred on the March 8, 2024, between 11:00 hours and 12:30 hours, along Zambezi Road in the Ngwerere Farms Area.

EDGAR LUNGU’S UNDERCOVER OPERATIVE CHILUFYA TAYALI THWARTED FROM INFILTRATING THE UPND

EDGAR LUNGU’S UNDERCOVER OPERATIVE CHILUFYA TAYALI THWARTED FROM INFILTRATING THE UPND

It was clear from the onset that Chilufya Tayali was on a mission to infiltrate the UPND power structure as Mr Lungu’s undercover agent.

First, I was very worried that the UPND might fall for his antics. When they didn’t, I knew they were ready to govern.

As a party in power, the most important thing to protect is information. This was chilufya Tayali’s target.

Chilufya Tayali has characteristics of an extortionist (blackmailer). Give him access to classified information, and he will earn a living.

Mr Lungu loves him because of his lack of reasoning power and love for money. Smart politicians leak classified information to him, and he, without consideration, publishes. More often than not, he has published very sensitive information, most of which borders on crime.

This explains why he has so many cases in courts of law. Whenever he is fined, Mr Lungu, who sent probably pays. The case of a 20,000 fine.

Chilufya Tayali lives on gathering information from politicians and, with his loud voice get money from them to speak it out. This is why Mr Lungu loves him. With money, chilufya Tayali can walk through fire. He acts without the benefit of intellect.

Chilufya Tayali is a man who sticks to a man with money like a teak. The only way he would live Mr Lungu is only if the former president was to be bankrupt.

Mr Lungu has once again recalled Chilufya Tayali from his botched assignment for yet another mission.

Mr Lungu is facing resistance to lead UKA due to his poor performance at the 2021 election. Many of the members of this newly formed grouping are of the view that Mr Lungu is unsellable. Therefore, they want a new leader to lead UKA.

But Mr Lungu does not want to rally behind anyone else but himself. This is why Chilufya Tayali has been recalled from his mission of infiltrating the UPND to Lungu’s image building.

UKA members feel Mr Lungu’s defeat by a then opposition leader HH was too wide to be narrowed in 2 years. For this reason, chilufya Tayali has been reassaigned to try and convince UKA members that Mr Lungu actually won the election, but HH stole his votes.

With Mr Emmanuel Mwamba in the figures cookery dept available. Chilufya Tayali’s lack of logic and is driven by money. He has already embarked on this mission. The mission that will make Lungu look useless in the eyes of the public.

How could a then opposition leader manage to rig against a sitting present?

What a stupid narrative! Anyway, this is exactly what PF is good at. They have done this with the same chilufya Tayali for seven years in power. They trust that Mr. Tayali can still turn their fortunes around. Remember this is the guy who lied to Mr Lungu and the entire PF and their surrogates like Mrs Nawakwi that he had evidence of HH stealing a farm in Kalomo. We saw Tayali and the entire PF celebration of the possible conviction of HH before 2021 and in the end Tayali and the PF administration caused the deaths of Joseph and Nsama Nsama.

Mr Lungu, you sent Chilufya Tayali on a mission impossible to try and infiltrate UPND. This next ECZ mission is mission insanity. It will make Mr Lungu lose grip on UKA.

Stop This Regional Imingalato Forthwith Of Politically Silencing Other Tribes Using The Police- Umodzi Kum’mawa

STOP THIS REGIONAL IMINGALATO FORTHWITH OF POLITICALLY SILENCING OTHER TRIBES USING THE POLICE

The KUM’MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION-KDC strongly condemns the ethnic political harassment, victimization and oppression of non Zambezi ethnic groups using law enforcement agencies by the UPND Government.

Last week, we condemned planned schemes of harassment targeting to arrest the Former President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu and maliciously charge him for attempted coup or treason.

This week, we are greeted with a police call out for Dr. Lungu’s former political advisor, Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba where he is expected at Force Headquarters at 09:00 on Wednesday. We equally hear rumors that Chilufya Tayali is on the most wanted list and so forth.

This is very sad and unfortunate that Easterners seem to have been prioritized for political persecutions and harassment by this government.

We condemn and denounce this development and demand that the UPND government stop this divisive politics.

As KDC, we firmly believe that this is a clear ethnic political scheme aimed at targeting people from regions outside the Zambezi regions such as Northern, Eastern, Luapula and Muchinga Provinces.

We have observed that law enforcement agencies are biased or compromised in the manner they are handling complaints among citizens as they have the “US” versus “THEM” list. Our people from Eastern province seem to belong to the “THEM” list.

As a pressure group, we have further discovered that, Systematically and consistently, there is no known high UPND official or high profiled citizens from the Zambezi region such as Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa or Mr. Mark Simuwe who are being summoned for their divisive, hostile and dangerous political publications, articles, audios and videos while anyone from Eastern or Northern provinces who speak contrary views are cowed out and silenced using police summons and arrests.

In fact, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, who not only issued regional and tribal sentiments but also offered a bribe to a journalist has never been fired or summoned by any law enforcement agency. It is clear that Hon. Mweetwa or Mark Simuwe belong to the “US” list.

As KDC, we are fade up and disheartened that a significant number of individuals currently involved in court cases and police investigations hail from either the Eastern or Northern regions, namely Luapula, Muchinga, and Northern.

Recent incidents involving former Head of State,
We cannot ignore the fact that individuals from Eastern and Northern regions, including the likes of Kampyongos, Sean Tembos, Mundubiles, Munir Zulus, and many others, are either currently facing court proceedings, ongoing investigations, or are released on police bond or bail.

This unjust Imingalato must cease immediately.

The KUM’MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION-KDC also known as UMODZI KUM’MAWA demands an end to this politically motivated harassment of individuals based on their regional background. We call on the law enforcement agencies to act with fairness, integrity, and without bias. Upholding the principles of justice and equality is essential for a democratic society, and every Zambian citizen deserves the right to a fair and impartial legal process. We believe in One Zambia, One Nation.

Issued for and on behalf of KUM’MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION-KDC also known as UMODZI KUM’MAWA.

DR M’MEMBE OFFERS LEGAL SUPPORT TO MUNYAULE TRADERS
….as displaced traders at Munyaule Market seek for help.
Lusaka… Friday, March 8, 2024 ( Smart Eagles)
Displaced Traders at Freedom Market Commonly known as Munyaule Market have asked for legal support from the Socialist Party as they seek to fight the demolition of their structures in Court.
On 3rd March, officers from the Local Authority swung into action and demolished structures filled with Merchandise at the Market destroying the livelihoods of over 5000 traders.

The Local Authority defended the action stating that it was the right step towards redeveloping the area.
However, Credible Reports indicate that some of those affected were rushed to the hospital due to High Blood Pressure while one person died about two days thereafter, as Market leaders suspect that the demolition might have contributed.

Speaking when they met SP Leader Dr Fred M’membe, the traders complained of having lost a lot of revenue from the Sunday incident.
The traders have since castigated the UPND area Councillor over the matter as they appealed to the Socialist Party to help them fight the court battles.

“…….. We were surprised that suddenly at 23 hours, they came to destroy. We found the police, we showed them the court order. When I followed that police officer, it was hell.

“Takwaba Councillor who intimidates people. He is not someone you can dialogue with and find a solution. He said he doesn’t care losing election, pamunyaule, pali 1,000. He won with 7000. Councillor needs to protect the people rather than siding with a developer. But the councillorbis the one ensuring that the people meet conditions for the developers.

“Instead of the council giving us conditions, the Councillor is the one giving us letter of conditions. Batupwishisha ama Capital, it would have been okay for us to be told to remove Rather than demolishing.”

The traders further narrated that the Local Authority have gone against the Injunction stating that they were not given enough time before the demolition exercise was conducted.

And Dr M’membe assured the traders that the Party’s legal team will be on hand to offer support.
“Our legal team will work with you and see how far it will help. The rule of law requires that you follow the law. If there is an injuction it means you respect the injunction. You fight in court until that Injuction is lifted. But even if you know you have a court order to remove people, it has to be done in a compassionate way, Justice without compassion is barbarism.

“These are difficult times, for the Government and the individuals. If the government is struggling to meet its obligations, what about an individual. At the end of the day, we get a Government we deserve, we get a Government, we have to learn lessons,” he said.
Dr M’membe has further bemoaned the manner the Market was demolished.

“You cannot demolish peoples source of livelihood, the market without giving them an alternative. Those who are trading there must have been taken somewhere to continue earning a living. Development is welcome but do not do it at the expense of destroying people’s livelihoods. Those selling at the market are struggling what more you who have been chased.

Everyday we are losing thousands of Jobs. We are losing so many jobs everyday, and for most of our people to earn a living in this economy they have to find job. Without being able to go to the market ninshi nabamitanfya inchito without dismissal letter. Mwachula pafula, nga fyachila apa Nimfwa. We are not promising miracles, but we will do our level best,” he said

Bob Marley Tour Manager Allan Cole Calls ‘One Love’ Movie ‘Made-Up Story’

0

Bob Marley’s close friend and former tour manager Allan ‘Skill’ Cole is not a fan of the portrayal of his close friend in the Paramount Plus Bob Marley: One Love movie, which purports Marley as a devout husband and father as he navigated the strife of his career at the heights of fame.

It’s been almost a month since the movie began airing worldwide and broke several box office records. Initially, the film was touted as a “biopic” of the reggae artist, which is co-executive and produced by Ziggy Marley and members of the Marley family, including Rita and Cedella.

The portrayal has caused several grouses from those who’ve watched it as it seemingly removed aspects of the artist’s life such as his life for girlfriend and baby mother, Cindy Breakspear, end Bob’s proliferation of beautiful women and a throng of children birthed out of wedlock with them.

Among those who haven’t gone to see the movie is Cole, who says that many figures that helped Marley into who he became were left out of the story, including himself and Mortimer Planner, Marley’s mentor when he lived in Trench Town.

“There are people who did a lot of work with him, on him to make him become more vibrant… I think I was one of those persons. Another of those persons that we don’t mention is Mortimer Planner [who] used to tell me years from the 60s; his lyrics are going to make the world go crazy,” Cole said in an interview with TVJ’s Anthony Miller.

Cole has not watched the movie and said he didn’t think that the movie would project “what the true essence of Bob Marley is about.”

“I was the closest person to him (Bob Marley) and I know his history more than anyone else. I knew so much about him; we spent so much time together, things that we shared, I don’t think anyone even knows,” he said.

Cole said he was the only person around Bob who was not employed by him, but the “Three Little Birds” singer reportedly told his mother and others that his debt to Cole could never be repaid. Cole also mentioned Cindy Breakspeare, who he said was an “integral” part of Marley’s life during the period covered by the film, but editorial cuts removed references to her.

“It was an affair that was real. I was in the middle of it and saw it all happen. It was real, and it was something special,” Cole said.

He called Breakspeare an “amazing” part of his life, but he acknowledged that Rita was his “first love”, and while she did a lot for him, it didn’t take away from him finding comfort in Cindy Breakspeare.

“She helped with his coming to fame. I remember the tabloid; it said ‘the beauty and the beast’, and people were curious. Marley was not a star at that time. He was rising cause’ we were there coming along with him. So I think that helped to create that image of a rasta man; who is this rasta man? Miss World [Cindy] saying, ‘he’s my boyfriend’. So, I think that helped with his career. He accepted it, he knew it but the type of individual he was, he wasn’t that type of guy who was excited by certain things,” Cole said.

Cole also defended Cindy against backlash when she posted a memorial to Marley for his birthday this year, and many Jamaicans sought to “put her in her place” as they reminded her she was a “side chick.”

However, Cole said, “What happened cannot be undone,” as he spoke about Marley being in love with Cindy and the people criticizing Breakspeare were not around nor understood the artist.

“It’s not doing her justice, it’s bitter, and it’s totally not acceptable,” he said.

Breakspeare has a child, Damian’ Junior Gong’ Marley, with Breakspeare.

In the meantime, Cole also said several scenes in the movie were faking, including the part where Rita slapped him as he laughed and said it was “unbelievable.”

“It’s a make-up story… I think that box that I say there where she [Rita] box him it is totally misleading and erroneous; I also think that they were talking about the Soulets; the Soulets was a group, but they didn’t even have a hit song… for you to say you left your group to do this or that, that’s misleading for people for the history of what transpired,” Cole said adding that many viewers did not know anything about the Marleys.

“I think he would have been totally upset,” [because] “there are a lot of lies. That box is unbelievable… he would go crazy because that’s not true,” Cole added.

Mpali Actress Mwiza weds at a colourful wedding

NGUZU’S SECOND WIFE, MWIZA, TIES KNOT AWAY FROM THE FARM

ADORED local series Mpali actress Anita Munamonga, alias Mwiza, has tied the knot with businessman Ian Chapiya.

Ms Munamonga, who is Nguzu’s second wife in Mpali, is seen in a beautiful white gown during a colorful wedding ceremony.

The event was earlier today streamed live on Facebook by Mpali actress Samantha Zulu, who plays Lindiwe, one of Nguzu’s seven wives.

In the clip, Nguzu’s third wife Shupiwe, real names Monde Daka, who is Anita’s close friend, is seen busy performing braidmaids’ duties.

At some point, Ms Daka held the microphone for the bride as she cited her wedding vows.

“I will seek to support and encourage you spiritually, physically, socially, through each challenge of life, all what is mine is yours until death so us part,” a smiley Ms Munamonga vowed.

A happy looking Mpali actor Albert(Fredrick Chitangala) is also seen in the sizeable crowd where an excited audience is heard ululating in awe.

“Beautiful!,” a female attendant is heard exclaiming as the audience complemented the praise.

A clergyman who blessed the union prayed that God’s hand be the centre of the new couple in town and watch over them.

“No weapon fashioned against you shall prosper,” the pastor prayed during the outdoor church service.

In the comments section, the bride’s followers congratulated her while others, understandably, wondered whether the wedding was real or an future scene in Mpali which is never short of twists and turns.

“Is this the next episode or what…? If it’s not a film…we say congratulations to “Mwiza”, Teddy Chama Mazunda wrote.

Others were ‘worried’ for Mwiza, concluding that the polygamous Nguzu may not be happy about the development considering that the newly wed is among his favourite wives.

“Mr Nguzu won’t like this,” another comment by Evelyn Maheka read

Mnangagwa’s son admits people hoarding cash due to broken trust

0

HARARE – Deputy Finance Minister, David Mnangagwa, the son of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has acknowledged the public’s reluctance to use banks, admitting they ‘innocently’ hoard cash due to a broken trust.

Zimbabwe’s financial services sector has in the past been hit by periods of hyperinflation and currency changes. The frequent policy changes and currency fluctuations further eroded trust among the banking public.

People in the past watched in horror as their savings dwindled to nothing. The relentless economic storm that has gripped the country for more than two decades has left them with no confidence in the financial systems.

Makonde MP Simbarashe Ziyambi on Wednesday asked David Mnangagwa to explain government policy regarding people who are “hoarding large sums of cash in safes in their houses and these people are not putting that money in circulation.”

The Deputy Minister responded by admitting that people ‘innocently’ hoard large sums of cash because they do not have confidence in the local banking sector.

“Government policy is that we are in a multicurrency regime. What this entails is that one can choose to hold value in United States dollars. Such United States dollars can either be in cash or can be in their nostro.

“This strategy that we have where people are keeping cash in boxes in their houses or in safes might speak to the confidence in the banking system which are also issues that are being addressed,” he said.

“We will not endeavour to compel people to remove money from their safekeeping places.

“I am sure my fellow Minister of Home Affairs would advise against that, but as Treasury and as the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, we will not be looking as to where and in what form one is keeping their personal finances.”

Beyond the historical factors, practical concerns seemingly added to the public’s hesitation to use banks. Long queues, limited access in rural areas, and high bank charges created a sense of frustration and alienation.

Accordingly, the banking system, meant to be a safe haven, is distant and inaccessible to many, pushing them towards alternative methods like keeping their money hidden away.

The Minister said the government is seized with the issue of regaining public confidence. They are also working on introducing a “structured currency” which will be backed by gold reserves while being managed by the currency board.

12 signs showing that HH has intellectual dwarfs for advisors or is the most arrogant Zambian today- Chris Zumani

12 signs showing that HH has intellectual dwarfs for advisors or is the most arrogant Zambian today

By Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba

1. When the Americans reviewed harsher imperialist sanctions against Zimbabwe including President Emerson Mnangagwa, his wife, his Vice President and key government officials this week, only HH took to social media to wickedly congratulate President Joe Biden. No nation has sanctioned America for all the atrocities globally and why should any sober leader praise them today on Zimbabwe? Only an African president with scholarly dwarfed advisors.

2. In the Bible book of Proverbs 16:18, we are guided that “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall”. In James 4:6-7,10, the Bible says: But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” …Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

3. When ambassador George Kanyamula Zulu was foolishly pampering him that Bally is a ‘god’ who made rains fall at the Ncwala Traditional Ceremony of the Ngoni People for the first time on 24th February, 2024, HH enjoyed his party cadre’s insults against the Ngoni King, Ngoni ancestors and God in heaven. Shockingly, HH was loudly smiling everywhere like King Nebuchadnezzar at Zulu’s traditional blasphemies.

4. The day he declared the 2024 drought as national disaster, President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) had a golden opportunity to apply humility before God and fellow man by officially apologizing on his previous arrogant comments against ‘Acts of God’, natural occurrences and climate change. That would have been the best thing to do if Bally was humble before God and man.

5. In opposition, HH used to mock God and fellow Zambians that droughts, floods, cholera, hunger, etc were nothing to threaten citizens if they had an intelligent and visionary leader like himself. Bally made PF and President Lungu look idiots in the face of natural disasters with his famous statement: “there is nothing like climate change, it is lack of vision and poor leadership in PF”.

6. HH made every previous leader like a useless fool who is experimenting to rule. Bally projected only himself to be that man with keys to govern better and make Zambians happier regardless of any situation. He cursed ZESCO load-shedding by committing that: “Bally will fix it”. With or without rains, HH committed to put water in Kariba dam and produce more electricity.

7. Ironically, God made it possible for HH to become our leader and ‘Acts of God’ are everywhere in his face. As usual, he runs with total disrespect for citizens he cheated in 2021 that he had abilities and skills to govern smoothly even if faced with droughts, floods, hunger, etc. HH failed to openly admit that he errored in his past statements in the opposition and just apologize to God and man.

8. But our proud president, the most powerful man in Zambia cannot apologize to anyone, not even to God. It’s like he never cheated, insulted or offended God or fellow man previously on topics like drought, cholera, hunger, ZESCO load-shedding, climate change, etc. This speaks volumes about the arrogant heart and haughty character of a president we have in state house today.

9. While in opposition, HH and his MPs cursed national day of prayers, denounced the idea of building a government Christian cathedral and cursed the creation of Ministry of Religious Affairs and National Guidance. In government, UPND Secretary General even insulted the Lusaka Catholic Archbishop, Alick Banda that he was a useless ‘Lucifer’ and the matter is before the court by Sean Tembo. To day, HH does not see any reason to openly apologize to anyone, not even God. HH feels like he is also a god.

10. At the Ncwala traditional ceremony, our president talked about Zambia to remain a unitary state which is agreeable. But intentionally failed to correct or apologize to the Litunga and the Lozi people for denouncing the existence of Barotseland. Since the theme was about national reconciliation, HH’s pride made him miss this rare chance to apologize to the Litunga using king Mpezeni’s national event.

11. In Daniel 4:28-31, the Bible says: “All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you”.

12. Our King Nebuchadnezzar will soon realize that he is making a big mistake to be drinking from the cup of pride and eating from the table of arrogance at Community House like in Daniel 4:28-31. When God visits that Babylon palace called Community House, our Nebuchadnezzar will be made to cry like a wild impala in 2026 if he does not repent and respect the creator of heaven and earth, the only possessor of the universe.

WAS CHRIS ZUMANI WORTH TO BE PRESIDENT LUNGU’S POLITICAL ADVISOR ?

Authored By Mupishi Jones

Chris Zumani usually makes my days,he reminds me of Hambe in Mpali, always unpredictable, acting on impulse!
Chris Zumani was the last political advisor to Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu when he was the President.During the peak of his career,Chris’s carefully crafted political advise constantly offered to President Lungu then, led Mr Lungu to a historical defeat of unprecedented vote difference of over a million votes and still believes he and his boss can come back to power again…….. that’s Chris for you!

My own analysis leads me to conclude that Chris’s political advise to Mr Lungu was based more on cheap propaganda other than facts as they were unfolding on the ground.Mr Lungu’s loss was unprecedented because it has never happened in the political history of this country for a sitting President to lose by over a million votes in an election where the total votes cast were a paltry 4 million, worse still, shared amongst over 10 presidential candidates.

As we were approaching the 2021 general elections,it became apparent that Mr Lungu was losing those elections if he continued in that political trajectory.Whilst almost everyone was reading the writings on the wall,Mr Lungu, with his full time political advisor couldn’t see what everyone was seeing.Even today,Mr Lungu still believes in the same people, the same faces that contributed to his humiliating defeat that he can win the next general elections.

One is left to wonder the quality of political advisors Mr Lungu prefers? What did Mr Lungu saw in Chris to warrant him settle at this young man who’s never held such a senior position either in government or private sector before?

I strongly feel these are the consequences of appointing your advisors who are younger in almost all the categories than yourself.Eventually it turns out the other way, the advisor becomes the advised.
We all have watched Nigerian Igwes and their advisors, always experienced far much older than themselves, with nothing to lose even when the Igwe fires them based on principal.

Its like Mr Lungu picked Zumani in order to neutralize him on those piercing articles he used to criticize him and masked that under the title of political advisor!

Chris was and still is, a young man driven by emotions other than reason.Chris’ experience was in the text book and not from the real world. Its like settling on Chilufya Tayali as your presidential political advisor would you blame Tayali for your loss?

From what Chris consistently writes and posts against the sitting President today, one can tell that the young man has an irresistible impulse to do or say anything without self censure and restraint.

My advice to Chris is that,at his tender age both in politics and years, let him not bring down those bridges because he may need to cross over them tomorrow.

The best this young man can do is to tone down,go underground and reflect.Currently his judgement is impaired. He’s living under the delusion that President Hakainde Hichilema is a one term president.

Let him flip the coin, how is he going to face reality after waking up on 16 August 2026 only to hear that President Hakainde Hichilema has scooped the presidency with another landslide victory?

Can this young man believe it? Unfortunately that’s how some people end up becoming sadists, thinking the whole world is wrong except themselves…. Chris move on young man,
I submit

Catalogue of UPND weaknesses that may have emboldened ba Lungu

0

Immediately after the New Dawn Administration swept into power, with a landslide margin following the crucial 2021 general elections, most former PF leaders would fold the proverbial tails between their legs and scamper in different directions. Fearing possible reprisals from the newly elected government; some went into self-imposed exile, others quickly announced their ‘early’ retirement from politics while others went into complete hibernation as they awaited what would follow next.

Well, since we are in Africa not in the West, they obviously anticipated revenge attacks, mass arrests and raids on their properties in search of stolen properties among others. Little did they realise President Hichilema is actually a genuine believer……a perfect example of a church elder in the Seventh Day Church who had no time for revenge unlike some of those that have gone before him, particularly his predecessor who had openly made it clear he would arrest his nemesis immediately after scooping the polls, throw him in prison and toss away the keys!

However, when Hichilema stepped up on the podium in the National Heroes Stadium to give his inauguration speech that day, he’d prove that he’s a unique brand of politician cut from a totally different piece of fabric unlike most of our politicians.

“We will restore the rule of law, general order in our public places and communities, and return our country back to normalcy. Read my lips, no more cadreism from any political party. There is room, there is space for all of you but there is no space for thuggery, no space for violence. It is a new dawn for the country going forward,” he told the boisterous and exuberant crowd that had filled up the stadium to witness his inauguration.

Truth be told, President Hichilema’s decision to depart from the “cho-chise kind of politics” (an eye for an eye or tooth for tooth) and play smart politics as if we’re in the West has somehow emboldened ba Edgar Lungu and his followers and given them ample space to start making unnecessary noise! There’s absolutely nothing that may have motivated ba Lungu to get back into politics other than a desire to exert revenge. What’s he coming back to achieve that he failed to accomplish during his 7 years in power?

Here’s a complete catalogue of UPND’s weaknesses that is actually giving ba Lungu and his followers courage to mercilessly attack and criticise government to the point of inciting people to rise against this particular government:

Failure to strip ba Lungu of his immunity
Before he became President; ba Lungu was a struggling lawyer scrapping a living in Chawama shanty compound. But lo and behold, today he has made himself a fortune; miraculously ‘metamorphosing’ into a very wealthy individual surpassing even Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who was in power for some 27 donkey years! Not even Chiluba who was dragged to court on account of plundering our national resources can be said to have accumulated so much wealth during his 10 years tenure as compared to this once poor man from Chawama. If we are not mistaken, he’s definitely qualifies to wear a crown as of the most indigenous elites in our country today. Apart from those shebeens in Chawama, what other businesses was ba Lungu running prior to moving into State House? Where has his wealthy suddenly come from?

If at all there’s every reason to believe be Lungu betrayed the trust of the people and stole from them, government must stop procrastinating and strip him off of his immunity, immediately! If you want to talk about precedence, it’s already there. Well, Chiluba arrested Kaunda, Mwanawasa stripped Chiluba of his immunity, Sata did the same to Banda. We are waiting with keen interest for government to conclude its investigations so that investigative wings can swiftly move in and arrest ba Lungu for whatever transgressions he might have committed against our people.

Failure to search properties of former leaders
If those collasal amounts, in both foreign and local currencies, that were found secured in the garage of a former radio personality or indeed the cash which was entrusted into the hands of a relative of a wife to one of the leaders, which she ended up ‘chewing’ of course is anything to go by, there’s every reason to believe former ministers, permanent secretaries and other senior government officials had mountains of cash stashed in their homes or farms. If those close to the president can do this, what about those serving at his behest? Think about all those all those impressive fleets of vehicles that have been found abandoned or hidden at some of their properties of our former leaders by the investigative wings?

UPND knew PF was upto no good; immediately the party was dislodged from power, government should have swiftly moved in to conduct thorough clean ups on the properties of such individuals – startling discoveries would have been made! Sadly, we gave these looters ample time to hide or destroy any incriminating evidence and now they can move around with clear consciences.

Failure to change the currency
Since those in government today had a hint former leaders still had lots of money hidden everywhere, one of the first steps government should have taken to beat them at their dirty game was to change our currency. Alas, those who had gone completely mute immediately after the elections have since found their voices and are now going full throttle challenging the government! Why is it so? They still have lots of money to guarantee their freedom – to hire expensive lawyers or bribe their way out of trouble!

Failure to clean up the civil service
There are still a lot of PF members lurking in the corridors of power, some of them occupying sensitive government positions as permanent secretaries, director generals, directors and district education board secretaries etc. These are the ones that are advancing the interests of the opposition by leaking sensitive information or simply throwing in spanners in the operations of government. There’s no doubt that most of these individuals rose to their positions by virtue of being aligned to the former ruling party. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that such individuals wouldn’t want to see the new dawn administration succeed so that they can go back to their thieving and corrupt ways. Government needs to completely overhaul the entire system and get rid of the bad eggs. There are a lot of career serving individuals who deserve such positions and not necessarily cadres!

Failure to extend a carrot to critical voices
Immediately President Sata took over the mantles of power, he swiftly moved in to subdue critical voices that could have given him headaches during his tenure. This saw a number of influential individuals from civil society and investigative scribes from the once influential The Post Newspapers being shunted into the foreign service or indeed government departments.

We have in mind apolitical individuals such as the likes of Linda Kasonde, John Sangwan and Sishuwa Sishuwa; no doubt, some of our finest brains! It doesn’t matter what roles they played or not in removing ba Lungu from power, they shouldn’t have been allowed to remain on the loose. These may be potential trouble makers that may give government headaches.

Failure to form Task Force on Corruption
According to BBC, newly elected Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai has set up a task force to crackdown on corruption and to recover stolen state assets.

His executive order said assets “wrongfully acquired at the expense of the government and people of Liberia” should be returned. Nomba imwe you want to take a soft approach on these criminals!

It would have probably been more beneficial for government to assemble a Task Force on Corruption or better still a Central Bureau of Investigations comprised of individuals with various expertise from different sectors – legal fraternity, intelligence, Zambia Police, National Prosecutions Authority, Financial Intelligence Centre, Zambia Revenue Authority and the Drug Enforcement Commission. These might have done a thorough job of pursuing suspected criminals, securing their convictions and recovering what belongs to the people.

Failure to ‘sansizo’ (motivate) cadres
Take a visit to most of UPND blogs; where are they not complaining? Let’s not fool ourselves…..most of us get into politics to eat! The same way that those that get appointed as ministers or civil servants are quick to claim allowances on top of their lofty salaries is the same way that party cadres want to be somehow “rewarded” for providing services to their party vis a vis defending the party from incessant attacks, explaining the party manifesto and of course, mobilisation. Heading into an election with a cabal of largely demotivated cadres is as good as dispatching soldiers into the battlefield with blank bullets! Of course government is rolling out various empowerment funds but should not expect everyone to appreciate this concept. Think of the call boys in the stations, our mothers breaking stones by the sides of the roads, our grandmothers braving the sun in the markets, our grandfathers working as security guards…… they’ve no time to fulfill all the requirements to access these funds. They just want to eat and move on. Remember to give them “ka sumfing” once in a while.

Failure to have a vibrant media team
The UPND media team in its current form is lethargic, moribund, media shy, inept and highly inefficient! When the opposition and other government critics are seen rushing to every media house discrediting and spewing propaganda against President Hichilema and his government or offloading loads of untruths on social aimed at tarnishing the image of government, the UPND media team shockingly remains in deep slumber! The only moment you tend to get any reaction from them is when the inferno might have already spread out of control and left a trail of damage in its wake. Contrast this with the time of PF in power when Sunday Chanda was at the helm as Media Director with Antonio Mwanza as his deputy…. Before anyone could even open their mouths to criticize government, the duo would be appearing on radio stations or featuring on live TV interviews fending off attacks. As for the social media, they remained vigilant 24/7! What’s stopping the UPND media team from doing the same?

PF GOVERNMENT ALLOCATED MUNYAULE MARKET LAND TO DEVELOPER IN 2016 FOR ULTRA-MODERN MARKET CONSTRUCTION; THE SAME PF IN NEW JACKETS(SP) ARE PLAYING PROPAGANDA OVER THE SAME MARKET

PF GOVERNMENT ALLOCATED MUNYAULE MARKET LAND TO DEVELOPER IN 2016 FOR ULTRA-MODERN MARKET CONSTRUCTION; THE SAME PF IN NEW JACKETS(SP) ARE PLAYING PROPAGANDA OVER THE SAME MARKET .

By Mark Simuuwe

We have followed with interest the propaganda happenings by PF members nicknamed themselves, ‘ Socialist Party’ over MUNYAULE Market, and wish to give details about the matter .

In 2016 , the land commonly known as MUNYAULE Market was allocated to a developer to construct an ultra-modern Market by the PF government , today called ‘Socialist Party’ , who now want to pretend to be responsible in the eyes of the grieving marketeers by arm-twisting the media to believing that the developer was given land rights under the UPND government .

It should be pointed out that when it was time to develop the area ,notices were issued to traders and meetings with traders were held with local authorities including the area councilor ; The last notice expired on 29th February , 2024 .

Once the Ultra-modern Market is complete , the developer committed in writing , to prioritize the affected marketeers for trading spaces .

Arising from this development , citizens should know that the local authorities have allocated alternative trading spaces to traders at DH Market , Soweto Market and Simon Mwewa lane Market .

Some Marketeers opted not to relocate to alternative places .

We , therefore, wish to urge citizens and the media not to pick propaganda stories from those in opposition , who deliberately want to pretend not to have details about the background of MUNYAULE market for political aggrandizement.

We are very much aware that , the PF members who include all those in Socialist Party and UKA made this decision, and today want to insult the very citizens they resolved to remove from the area after they allocated the said piece of land to a developer.

They are now shamelessly planting propaganda by cheating citizens that they love them and that is why they kept MUNYAULE market in the state it was , yet they are the ones who decided to allocate the piece of land to the developer.

The only evidence of ownership of land in Zambia is a title deed and so our colleagues allocated the said piece of land in 2016.

We also wish urge the media to do some investigative journalism by doing a search at Ministry of Lands at Deeds and registry office so that the nation can be well-informed on the time the developer was given a piece of land in question.

Further , the media may also engage the Ministry of Local government for official and credible source of information to avoid being caught up in malicious publications from the opposition.

Zimbabweans urged not to keep cash at home

Police have warned businesses against keeping huge sums of money at home and in offices as this was attracting criminals. This comes as the law enforcers have defended the “shoot-to-kill” approach in dealing with armed robbers saying the move was meant to protect officers and members of the public from vicious criminals.

Armed robbers have been on the prowl across the country and in several instances involved in robbing families and offices of huge amounts of money.

The armed criminals have also become brutal in dealing with the victims and the police where they have been involved in shootouts that have led to severe injuries and in some cases, fatality.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Business Times that businesses must desist from keeping cash at home or offices to avoid criminals and protect themselves.

“We have realized that some companies, some business persons and some individuals are not banking their money regularly with financial institutions,” Nyathi said.

He said that in most cases, the police have established that most cases of armed robberies in offices or at home involve insiders who tipoff the criminals.

“The public, especially business people or financial entities, should avoid a situation where you have each and every employee at a company knowing how financial transactions are conducted and the movement of cash,” he said.

“They (criminals) have got insiders including employees or security companies they work with. People leak information along the way.”

“Our message as the police has always been that companies, businesses, people, or families, must bank with financial institutions and only keep smaller amounts which they want to utilize for particular transactions,” Nyathi said.

In December last year, a violent clash between detectives and a gang of armed robbers erupted in Harare, resulting in two fatalities and the arrest of four individuals including some who were based in neighbouring South Africa.

One was shot dead on the scene while others were arrested.

Nyathi however, justified the police action of shooting armed robbers, some of them fatally, saying they will not fold their hands while faced with danger.

“We (police) fully respect human rights. However, remember we have had police officers who have died as they are trying to arrest suspected armed robbers. We have had police who are now crippled, who are now disabled (as a result)”

“When armed robbery suspects decide to have a confrontation with police officers, honestly, would you expect police officers to fold their hands?” Nyathi asked rhetorically.

“In this regard, when armed robbery suspects decide to have a shootout with the police officers, they should not expect any mercy.”

COPPERBELT IS SLOWLY BECOMING A GHOST PROVINCE

COPPERBELT IS SLOWLY BECOMING A GHOST PROVINCE

….due to low productivity in the mining sector hence the need to unlock KCM, says Clergyman

Kitwe… Friday March 8, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

Copperbelt is slowly becoming a ghost province due to low productivity levels in the mining sector hence the need to quickly unlock Konkola Copper Mines Plc, says a Kitwe based clergyman.

Pastor Charles Chilenshya of Christ my Life Ministries, says a lot of people are expecting that before 1st April this year, Vedanta Resources would have taken over the full operations of KCM.

Pastor Chilenshya indicated that poverty levels on the Copperbelt are on the increase and that it is imperative that the asset is quickly given back to the investor, Vedanta.

He states that Vedanta has already committed to dismantle the arreas owed to contractors and suppliers by KCM saying lots of jobs are at stake due to huge monies owed to them as they fail to pay their workers.

“The people of the Copperbelt are grappling with many issues due to the non functionality of KCM. We know Mopani Copper Mines also has to be unlocked but Vedanta Resources has been unveiled as the one to run KCM. So far, they have injected over US$25 million to pay salaries and other issues before they even take full control of the asset. But we know that contractors and suppliers have not been given their money as the issues still remains unsolved. The contractors and suppliers have families to support,” he said.

“The mining industry is next to government in terms of employment as they are the second largest employer. The workers can’t feed their families, can’t afford to pay rentals as this has resulted in most of them being on the streets.”

He was confident that as soon as Vedanta takes over full control of KCM, there will be increased economic activities on the Copperbelt and this will help a lot of people to start supporting their families.

Pastor Chilenshya also said once a lot of people have been employed, they will be able to contribute to the national treasury through taxes.

The Clergyman has since appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to expeditiously resolve the remaining legal issue so that KCM would start full operations.

US calls for ‘new-look’ at Zimbabwe

0

The United States government says it stands ready for a “constructive relationship” with Zimbabwe adding the latest developments presented an opportunity for businesses to explore possible opportunities in the southern African country.

This week, the US President Joe Biden terminated the Zimbabwe sanctions programme while the country’s Treasury imposed fresh restrictive measures under the Global Magnitsky Act of 2016 tightening sanctions on President Emmerson Mnangagwa, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, business tycoon Kuda Tagwirei and others they allege were involved in human rights violations and corruption a claim dismissed by the Harare administration.

Biden signed an Executive Order (E.O.) terminating the national emergency with respect to Zimbabwe and revoking the executive orders that have authorized Zimbabwe-specific sanctions.

This means the economic sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), pursuant to the Zimbabwe sanctions programme are no longer in effect and for the first time in over 20 years, the US removed one of the key impediments in Foreign Direct Investment into Zimbabwe.

US Embassy Zimbabwe Chargé d’Affaires Laurence Socha said the latest development was an opportunity for business to have a “new look at Zimbabwe.”

“We see it as an opportunity for businesses to have a new look at Zimbabwe,” he told journalists yesterday. “It was hard under a previous programme titled the Zimbabwe Sanctions Programme to get away from perceptions that you could not do business in Zimbabwe. That is not true. We hope that business and financial institutions and investors have a new look at Zimbabwe market and connections with its people.”

“Lastly we see this as an opening for a constructive relationship between the people of US and Zimbabwe so that all 16mn people here have the opportunity to prosper.”

In a March 4 letter to the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate on the Termination of Emergency with Respect to the Situation in Zimbabwe, the US President said: “Although I continue to be concerned with the situation in Zimbabwe particularly with respect to acts of violence and other human rights abuses against political opponents and with respect to public corruption, including misuse of public authority, I have determined that the declaration of a national emergency in Executive Order 13288 is no longer needed.”

He however, said the sanctions will remain on those alleged to be perpetrating violence and involved in suspected corruption acts.

This has drawn the ire of Zanu-PF officials who feel the continuation of sanctions on the party leader and those close to him despite removing on others was a sign Zimbabwe remain sanctioned.

“We take note of the recalibration of sanctions by the US. This is testimony to the open door policy of President Mnangagwa and the efforts he has been putting in re-engaging with all countries in the world,” Zanu-PF Director of Information Farai Marapira said.

“However, suffice to say as long as the President of the country is under sanctions, Zimbabwe remains under sanctions and in all manner and effect, we are still a heavily sanctioned country and we call for all and any sanctions to go unequivocally. We cannot continue to have these sanctions.”

Bikita South MP Energy Mutodi said Parliament of Zimbabwe is ready to engage the US to ensure removal of sanctions.

“We at the Parliament of Zimbabwe we are ready to engage with the Congress of the United States of America and the President of the United States of America,” Mutodi said.

“We have already done a motion in Parliament which debated whether the US needs to maintain the sanctions regime against Zimbabwe given the fact that they are hurting the citizens of the country. There is currency volatility, exchange rate volatility, there is unemployment, companies closing, people leaving the country going to seek employment in other countries as a result of the sanctions. We are saying as a country, we need to negotiate with the US so that we cooperate mutually for the benefit of both countries,” the former Information Deputy Minister said.

“We believe these talks are possible and this is why we moved this motion which has been adopted in Parliament and is on the Minister of Foreign Affairs desk now probably to facilitate a delegation to reach out to the United States so that we can have these talks so that we ensure the sanctions are lifted to their fullness.”

MAN JAILED 5 YRS FOR STEALING NSHIMA, EGGS

MAN JAILED 5 YRS FOR STEALING NSHIMA, EGGS

A 25-year-old man of Luanshya has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a house where he stole nshima and eggs, among other household goods.

Timothy Mukaba, was charged with aggravated robbery, which was later reduced to burglary and theft after breaking into Gabriel Mwansa’s house in Luanshya’s Mikomfwa in May last year.

According to a statement of facts presented before court by state advocate Judith Mayiya, on the material day around 23:30 hours, Mr Mwansa retired to bed after locking doors and windows.

Later, he heard a big bang on the door, after which he woke up and switched on the light. He then saw Mukaba inside the house holding a mattress and a lunch box containing nshima and eggs.

“The accused person left with the mattress and lunch box, which had nshima and eggs,” Ms Mayiya said.

“Mr Mwansa gave chase but could not get hold of the accused person. According to him, the accused was a known person to him.

“They had worked together for a period of one year at a bar belonging to Christopher Saluhandu. Around 10:00 hours, Mr Mwansa informed the owner of the property, Mr Saluhandu, and informed him of what transpired.”

Ms Mayiya told the court that upon receipt of the information, Mr Saluhandu visited the scene and discovered that the wire which was used to close and lock the door had been removed and the mattress and bed were missing.

“The matter was reported at Malaika Police Post, where Mr Saluhandu valued his stolen property at K800,” she said.

“Police instituted investigations, which led to the apprehension of the accused person. From the stolen property, nothing was recovered.”

In mitigation, Mukaba asked for forgiveness, stating that although he was not justifying himself, he was “merely trying to survive”.

He said he has, however, realised the impact of his actions and poor judgement, adding that if given a chance, he will endeavour to find legal means of survival.

“I have considered that you are a first offender and readily admitted to the charge without wasting the court’s valuable time,” Ndola High Court Judge Mary Mulanda said.

“Accordingly, I sentence you to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour with effect from May 15, 2023, the date when you were arrested and taken into custody. You are informed of your right to appeal within 30 days.”

Kariba Dam runs dry?

0

Zimbabwe and Zambia – already struggling with food shortages – are now reeling from low power generation at the Kariba power station due to the same underlying cause: El Niño.

The climate system has brought below-normal rainfall, which first saw farmers struggle. Now the water reserved for power generation is running low, with the water level at 15% of total capacity and falling.

To date, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), a bi-national organisation mandated with regulating the Kariba Dam, has guarded the hydroelectricity systems 428MW of generation output, shared between Zimbabwe and Zambia. This week, it warned of the need for a review.

“The hydrological review will, among other factors, take into consideration the actual performance of the 2023–2024 rainfall season and the resulting inflows into the lake over the first quarter of the year 2024,” ZRA said in a statement.

“The results of the hydrological simulations could result in an increment, reduction, or keeping of the prevailing 2024 water allocation as is.”

In normal circumstances, the ZRA maintained last year’s 16 billion cubic metres (BCM) for electricity generation shared equally between the two countries.

ZRA said:

Given that the Kariba inflows are so far below average, with a possibility of registering as one of the lowest on record, the Power Utilities have been advised to maintain strict adherence to their respective water allocation thresholds to sustain generation to the end of the year.

At full capacity, the Kariba Dam generates around 30% of Zambia’s total installed capacity of 3 400MW, and roughly 50% of Zimbabwe’s capacity of 2 300MW.

If the dam falls short, both will have to rely on imports while South Africa – the literal regional powerhouse – has little electricity to spare.

Like last year, Mozambique could find itself exporting to neighbours because it has an electricity surplus.

That surplus is due to a low electrification rate with only 40% of its population having access to electricity.

Mozambique produces just over 3 000MW with an average demand of just over 2 000MW.

Food insecurity

The Zimbabwean government said between January and March almost three million people required food aid.

“Twenty-six percent of the country’s population is food insecure. This translates to 2 715 717 people. This population requires 100 482 metric tonnes of grain during the January to March 2024 period,” said the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Jenfan Muswere.

El Niño will also negatively impact crops such as cotton, and tobacco a major foreign currency earner.

Zambia’s, President Hakainde Hichilema declared the drought a national emergency.

In his State of the Nation Address, he said 84 of the country’s 116 districts were affected. As such, the first step was to “take food from areas where there is an excess and distribute it to needy areas.”

He also said from the last cropping season, about 1 million hectares of the 2.2 million hectares allocated to maize had been destroyed.

LAMENTATIONS OF A NAPSA CONTRIBUTOR….A NIGHTMARE

0

LAMENTATIONS OF A NAPSA CONTRIBUTOR….A NIGHTMARE

The Editor-in Chief/Administrator
Greetings to you in the name of our Lord.
Name is Modest Luchembe Kamenga

I have an issue with NAPSA in terms of calculations on my pension money.

I started working in August 1967.
In January 1982 I got an outside offer to go and work in Swaziland as an expatriate. By the end of January 1982 my total contributions to ZNPF amounted to K1,485.80 as shown as principal contributions on proof marked Copy 1 .

Upon relocating back to Zambia in 2015, the following year I visited NAPSA here in Livingstone and to my shock. I was told that my final payment amounted to K698.45. I could not believe that in this world there is a retirement fund that shrinks. In September 2019 I visited the NAPSA office to enquire about my compensation, the manager refused to see me instead he told me to go and write a letter and put all my facts. Which I did on September 2 2019. The treatment I got from there affected me so much that kept my BP on highside despite the medications I was taking. Hence on November 10 2019 I was attacked by a stroke and active left side was completely paralyzed. With the outbreak of pandemic the rehabilitation centre was shut down here in Livingstone. I had to rely on my personal exercise with the assistance of my Swazi wife.

On 13th March, 2023 my wife drove me to NAPSA, they told me that my first letter was misplaced and I should write another letter Copy 3 (a+b) which I did. I was taken to the manager’s office and we had a serious meeting. I was not convinced of his explanation that NAPSA was just kind in paying old members of ZNPF when it had taken all assets of ZNPF through cheating. They the assets, liquidated them and sold to themselves at a give away bid. At the end of the meeting the manager promised to submit my letter to the head office and wait for the reply which has never been sent back to me up this day.

In November 2023 I went to Lusaka at NAPSA offices and no senior manager wanted to meet me despite explaining that the process had gone over the branch level.

Then someone told me to go to the Ministry of Labor. There I was told that the Ministry of Finance who introduced the rebasing should be able to explain as to why the calculations plus rebasing have shrunk the the contributions.

At the finance after listening to my submission they told me that it not the rebasing which reduced the value of contributions but they own formula.

I was referred to a certain tribunal, only to find that they are only dealing with Forex issues. Hence I was directed to the Office of the Public Protector. Because it was my first time to know that we have such an office also in Zambia. In South Africa it’s a well known office because of high profile cases it has been handling. We spent close to 2 hours with the taxi driver who was taking me around in order to locate the place. We found some workers chatting outside sitting at pillar of the bridge who took us inside. No one was doing anything. The lady introduced us to the receptionist who a senior by the name Mr. Muntombe. He interviewed me after that he took me to another office and helped me to write a statement. After I had finished the driver came to help me to go to the car. By then it became very difficult for me to walk despite having a clutch. I was promised to make a follow up after two weeks.

Two weeks later I phoned Mr Muntombe who told me that he was in Mansa opening another branch but directed me to Choma Branch Manager. I phone the Choma office and made an appointment to go see her over my issue. We arranged and fixed the date as the following Monday. On that Monday I boarded the 06:00 hours from Livingstone to Choma and arrived in time. Only to find the lady was still in Lusaka. I wondered why she couldn’t have phoned and postpone the meeting.

Ever since I have been phoning them that they got irritated and sent me the letter marked Copy 4

It’s my humble appeal to you Mr President that you find time to bring justice to my situation.

Thanking you Sir in advance

Modest Luchembe Kamenga

DISCONTENT IS RISING- Fred M’membe

DISCONTENT IS RISING

There is absolutely no doubt that currently, the country is in a state of despair and anxiety, both politically and socio-economically. Our people are living as if they are on death row. They are taking one day at a time, without knowing what tomorrow may bring. It’s a life of uncertainty, helplessness, and desperation for many people.

We would like to point the current UPND government to the increasing discontent with their intolerance, repression, human rights violations, and insensitivity to the plight of the suffering majority.

Their style of governance in a constitutional democracy, abuse of state institutions, heightened human rights and constitutional violations, harsh economic situation, has left multitudes of citizens frustrated and disgruntled, and compelled them to lose confidence in the country’s processes and systems such as law enforcement, judiciary and legislature, and our democratic trajectory in general. And this is not a good sign of what lies ahead for them.

The UPND government must know that the accelerated assault on political opponents and critical voices has exposed their obsession with power and blatant neglect for the people and their aspirations. For them, governance is all about self-preservation, personal glorification, and wealth accumulation.

Evidently, the UPND administration has no respect for our constitution and democracy. And to prove this, one doesn’t have to go far. Just look at how they have destroyed almost all critical institutions of governance, including the once well-regarded Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). The ECZ in its current state is not serving tge interests of the people. We have said it before and we are repeating that at the rate things are going, if sanity does not prevail, for the first time in history, we shall fail to organize and hold successful general elections in 2026.

We have seen the abuse of state institutions and systems in by-elections to propel the UPND’s electoral malpractices, violence, and vote-buying, as well as all sorts of criminalities. Cabinet ministers and district commissioners are committing crimes in these by-elections with impunity as the ECZ, police and other stakeholders continue to turn a blind eye.

This is the kind of democracy that the UPND is pretentiously advancing in this country today, and they expect competing political players to keep quiet and watch. But time will tell. Zambians will resist it. Zambians will fight for their liberties and rights. Zambians will not allow the UPND and its leaders to undermine the significance of democracy as a political process intended to guarantee citizen’s rights and freedoms. Zambians will not allow the UPND government to diminish the inclusive reputation of governance in reflecting the shared desires of the masses.

For now, those in power today can comfort each other by believing their own propaganda, but reality will dawn soon.

The twin crises of load shedding & mealie meal shortage will make or break UPND

Editorial(Zambian Business Times)
Well, Zambia’s greatest fear that 2023/2024 would be hit by a devastating drought was finally confirmed by President Hakainde Hichilema – HH last week when he declared a state of national disaster and that Zambia would be asking well wishers for humanitarian help.

We should also however, hasten to mention here that this warning of a severe drought was sounded by both the local, regional and global meteorology experts in the last quarter of 2023 that Zambia was more likely than not, to face drought or El nino.

So let’s not pretend that no warning was sounded. The new dawn government and it’s top officials should take a big share of the blame or responsibility for not initiating timely action then, until it’s now too late for certain cheaper options. Moreover, president HH is on record to have stated that climate change effects should not be used as an excuse for incompetence in dealing with its effects.

We as the Zambian Business Times – ZBT and our local, regional and international network of experts, contributors and sources did our part and even requested ZESCO and the Ministry of Energy to ensure the speedy closure and installation of solar power generation plants as well as called for the government to halt the exports of maize to secure local food security.

See link in April 2023 for ban on maize exports
https://zambianbusinesstimes.com/govt-finally-bans-maize…/

But like most political regimes and their appointees, the UPND new dawn government chose to ignore the ZBT and other critical voices of advise due to mostly vanity, hubris and all sorts of prejudice. This is simply because most of their appointees are not polished and experienced enough to reach the stage of humility required at that level

As for President HH, we are aware that it is not an easy decision for any leader, let alone a politically chosen one that has to go through the brutal contest of popular voting systems to find themselves in this position. We saw even as he announced a national disaster that his body language showed some traces of unease, as the announcement was a confirmation of failure by his regime to overcome challenges that are part of national leadership.

You can argue all you want, but the bitter truth is that this is not the first, nor will it be the last time that Zambia will experience a drought or a national crisis. For those that are much older and more experienced, they will tell you stories of yellow maize in the MMD regime, food riots in the UNIP regime et al.

All regimes, because by their nature manage the governance and administration of peoples lives are tested by debilitating economic crises, pandemics or whatever name you want to ascribe.

The immediate former ruling party – the Patriotic Front (PF) main test was the pandemic and to some large extent, also faced drought and even the Cholera pandemic. These crises led to low voter turn out even in their strong holds because people became more realistic about the ability of their leaders.

These tests have come to all regimes that have taken political leadership in Zambia and there is no other way other than to face them head on. The ruling United Party for National Development – UPND is no exception. Fortunately for Zambians, they will have an opportunity to compare and contrast how UPND deals with these crises and how PF (or whatever form they will take), who are now the main opposition dealt with the crises of their time.

The way HH and the UPND administration handles this drought that has a twin crisis for food and national security on one hand and load shedding and economic decimation on the other, is a litmus test for them and their top team to show leadership and perhaps prove that they can handle these crises better. Their die hard supporters are now also being forced to face up to the reality of their party’s abilities. This will inadvertently affect the voter turn out in their strong holds.

We have always cautioned our political leaders that this is Africa, and this is Zambia in particular. The challenges are unique and the perception and views of its people are informed by the collective culture and history. Zambia’s geopolitical and economic challenges are unique and remain very complex

No matter which foreign experts you engage, be rest assured that their advise is most useful on the technical side of things, on the scientific side of things. But on the cultural and people side, it’s the locals that will count and make the grade. It’s the development that is delivered in the eyes of the locals that will matter in the final verdict.

This is why it’s now a known fact that only Africans can develop African, that only Zambians can develop Zambia. You will be surprised that even the villagers know how to survive these droughts, because it’s not the first time Zambia is experiencing one. So the way you resolve it and their perception are intertwined.

But yes, for the city dwellers who are now in the majority, it’s UPNDs time to show what they are made of. City life is about specialization, don’t expect people to all go into Agriculture, and a solution is needed soonest as the queues for cheaper mealie meal keep growing with more and more people getting frustrated by the day.

This is why we are calling on the Head of State to roll up his sleeves and deal with this deep crisis head on. Some may say micro management has no place, but this may just be the right place we’re it’s required. If you see that ZNS is saying they will deliver 15,000 tons of winter maize when the country consumes 2.4 million tons, then you should know that this needs the head of state involment.

After all, Zambia has a Presidential system, the president in Zambia not only heads the executive arm of government, but has to ratify and sign off the appointment of the Speaker and the Chief Justice, the two other arms of government that should ideally be independent. The position still remains too powerful and hence the buck stopping at plot 1.

So, when a government fails, its the Presidents name and reputation that is tainted or soiled. That’s why we see that even their top appointees from ministers to PS, to DC simply defect and move on to serve in successive regimes. Even secretary generals defect, In a way, the presidency in Zambia remains a lonely and toughest job, which most admire out of limited information.

“The Unseen Threat: Government Regulation of Online Broadcasting Unraveled”

The regulation of online broadcasting by the government poses numerous risks and limitations that far outweigh any perceived benefits. The digital realm, with its endless possibilities and global reach, thrives on the freedom of expression and unrestricted flow of information. Imposing regulations on online broadcasting cripples this fundamental freedom and stifles innovation, hindering the potential for positive societal change.

Firstly, government regulation of online broadcasting infringes upon freedom of speech, a fundamental human right in democratic societies. The internet serves as a platform for diverse voices, providing an avenue for marginalized groups, independent journalists, and citizen journalists to share their perspectives and hold those in power accountable. By subjecting online broadcasting to government oversight, there is a looming threat of censorship, where unpopular opinions or critical voices may be silenced, effectively suppressing democratic discourse.

Moreover, government regulation can impede innovation and hinder the growth of the digital landscape. The digital era has witnessed the emergence of countless innovative platforms, creating new ways for artists, content creators, and entrepreneurs to thrive. Placing regulatory burdens on online broadcasting restricts their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, potentially leading to a less diverse and dynamic digital space. It is essential to foster an environment that encourages experimentation and invention, allowing for the continual development and progress of online broadcasting.

Additionally, governmental regulation introduces a bureaucratic layer that is often slow to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape. The internet operates at lightning speed, and regulations that attempt to keep up can quickly become outdated or ineffective. This creates further challenges and potential loopholes, ultimately weakening the intended purpose of regulation. Rather than relying on outdated regulatory frameworks, a better approach is to encourage self-regulation within the industry, ensuring that platforms and content creators exercise responsible practices while preserving their freedom of expression.

Furthermore, online broadcasting regulation can have a chilling effect on freedom of information. Governments, with the power to regulate, may utilize this authority to control the narratives, manipulate the flow of information, or propagate propaganda. By preserving the independence of online broadcasting, we promote transparency, public access to diverse viewpoints, and the dispersal of reliable information. Empowering individuals to utilize critical thinking skills when evaluating broadcasted content is crucial in facilitating an informed citizenry.

In conclusion, government regulation of online broadcasting presents a grave threat to the freedom of expression, innovation, accessibility to diverse perspectives, and the unrestricted flow of information. It is crucial to protect the fundamental rights that underpin the digital realm and foster an environment where online broadcasting can flourish organically. By embracing self-regulation, promoting digital literacy, and encouraging responsible practices within the industry, we can achieve a balance that respects both freedom and accountability.

Chamisa disappointed…says feels betrayed by Hichilema and Biden

The United States recent adjustments to its sanctions program on Zimbabwe has left Chamisa and other likeminded opposition leaders disappointed.

Chamisa and his colleagues are also furious over President Hakainde Hichilema’s increasingly positive posture towards President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Furthermore, President Hichilema is now pushing for the removal of all sanctions.

A close confidante of Chamisa who spoke to this reporter revealed that they had been informed by their allies within the Hichilema Administration that the Zambian President had become treacherously close to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“Our contacts in Lusaka say ED and HH phone each other every week. This is dangerous for us and all opposition parties in the region. Hichilema must wake up,” said the source.

The source added that the US’ adjustments to the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the American Government have further fuelled Chamisa’s disillusionment.

“Chamisa views President Biden as getting soft with President Mnangagwa’s Government. Chamisa has perceived a correlation between the easing of sanctions and President Hichilema’s gestures towards President Mnangagwa, suspecting clandestine consultations between the two leaders to politically sideline him,” said the source. “Despite the apparent setbacks, Chamisa finds reassurance in “the unwavering support promised by allies within the SADC Secretariat.”

“Despite the apparent setbacks, Chamisa is finding solace in the assurances he received from his friends within the SADC Secretariat, who told him that they would remain solidly behind him,” said the source.

Several Zambian political analysts have dismissed Chamisa’s accusations as hogwash. They reminded Chamisa that Hichilema was not guided by failed foreign opposition leaders but by Zambian interests. They stressed that Hichilema was an African statesman not a leader of some fanciful regional opposition grouping.

Meanwhile diplomats in Gaborone have dismissed claims that the Zimbabwean opposition has spies within the SADC Secretariat.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Chamisa directly were fruitless, as he was unreachable on his mobile phones.

February breaks climate records as warmest month on record – EU’s climate service

0

The EU’s climate service, has it that last month marked the warmest February on record in modern times, continuing a streak of nine consecutive months setting new temperature highs. Since June 2023, each month has surpassed previous records for the respective time of year.

Notably, global sea surface temperatures have reached unprecedented levels, while Antarctic sea-ice extent has once again plummeted to exceptionally low levels.

While the ongoing El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean continues to contribute to elevated temperatures, it is clear that human-induced climate change remains the primary driver of this sustained warmth.

“Heat-trapping greenhouse gases are unequivocally the main culprit,” stresses Prof Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization.

Carbon dioxide concentrations have reached their highest levels in at least two million years, as reported by the UN’s climate body, and experienced near-record increases over the past year.

The accumulation of these warming gases contributed to February 2024 being approximately 1.77°C warmer than “pre-industrial” times, defined as the period before significant human activity led to extensive burning of fossil fuels, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. This surpasses the previous record set in 2016 by approximately 0.12°C.

The elevated temperatures led to severe heatwaves affecting regions including western Australia, southeast Asia, southern Africa, and South America.

Bar chart of global average February temperatures against pre-industrial levels, 1940 to 2024. February 2024 is the hottest on record at 1.77C above pre-industrial, and their has been an increasing trend over time.

The current 12-month average temperature stands at 1.56°C above pre-industrial levels, following the confirmation of the first year-long breach of 1.5°C warming last month.

In the 2015 Paris Agreement, nearly 200 countries committed to limiting the increase in global warming to below 1.5°C to mitigate the most severe climate impacts.

While this threshold in the Paris agreement is typically understood as a 20-year average and has not yet been exceeded, the consistent succession of record-breaking temperatures highlights the imminent proximity to reaching this critical mark.

Recent records haven’t just been limited to air temperatures. Countless climate metrics are far beyond levels seen in modern times.

One of the most notable is sea surface temperatures. As the graph below shows, the margin of records in recent months has been particularly striking.

Multiple line chart of global average sea surface temperatures from 1979 to 2024. Sea surface temperatures have been at their highest on record in February 2024, with 28 February showing 21.09C.
Researchers are keen to stress that the scale and extent of the oceanic heat is not simply a consequence of the natural weather event known as El Niño, which was declared in June 2023.

“Ocean surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific clearly reflect El Niño. But sea surface temperatures in other parts of the globe have been persistently and unusually high for the past 10 months,” explains Prof Saulo.

“This is worrying and cannot be explained by El Niño alone.”

Ocean warming has prompted concerns about the mass bleaching of coral reefs. It also raises global sea-levels and can help to fuel higher intensity hurricanes.

Unusually warm waters may also have been a factor in another exceptional month for Antarctic sea-ice. The three lowest minimum extents in the satellite era have now occurred in the last three years.

Multiple line chart of Antarctic daily sea-ice extent, 1979 to 2024, between the months of January and April. After record lows in 2023, 2024 has also been exceptionally low.
Scientists are struggling to explain exactly what’s going on.

Until 2017, Antarctic sea-ice had defied predictions that it would shrink, unlike in the Arctic, where the downward trend has been much clearer.

The apparent recent shift – occurring at the same time as other records are being broken around the planet – adds to concerns that Antarctic sea-ice may finally be waking up to climate change.

“I don’t think you can say it’s coincidental,” Prof Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter, told BBC News.

“It’s absolutely frightening. The records are just off [the] scale.”

There are signs that the run of global temperature records may finally come to an end in the months ahead.

The 2023-24 El Niño has been one of the five strongest such events on record, the World Meteorological Organization announced on Tuesday, but it is gradually weakening.

Chart showing average seasonal sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific compared with the long-term average. When temperatures are 0.5C above or below the average, they are considered to be El Niño or La Niña conditions respectively. Recent months have shown El Niño conditions, but these now appear to have peaked.
El Niño will continue to have an effect on temperatures and weather patterns for the next few months.

“We would expect [El Niño] to continue to keep 2024 temperatures elevated at least through the first half of the year,” Dr Colin Morice, a senior scientist at the UK’s Met Office Hadley Centre, told BBC News.

However, a switch to neutral conditions in the Pacific is likely between April and June, according to US science body NOAA, and a further switch to the cool phase known as La Niña could then happen between June and August.

This would likely put a temporary lid on global air temperatures, with a cooler sea surface in the East Pacific allowing less heat to escape and warm the air.

But as long as human activities keep releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases, temperatures will continue rising in the long-term, ultimately leading to more records and extreme weather.

“We know what to do – stop burning fossil fuels and replace them with more sustainable, renewable sources of energy,” says Dr Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science at Imperial College London.

“Until we do that, extreme weather events intensified by climate change will continue to destroy lives and livelihoods.”

Royal Caribbean employee charged with concealing cameras to monitor visitors

0

An employee who works on Royal Caribbean cruises is being accused of putting cameras in the bathrooms of passenger rooms to watch people, even young girls.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, was arrested on Sunday for making and having photos and videos of children being abused. The arrest happened when the Symphony of the Seas ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This information is from an affidavit filed in the U.S Court in Florida. He is also accused of watching people in a sneaky way six times in a state court case.

A person staying in a cabin where Mirasol worked found a camera in the bathroom on February. The art museum is open from nine to five on weekdays, and from ten to six on weekends. It was stuck to the counter beneath the sink, as stated in the document. She told the people in charge of the ship, and they sent security to check the room.

Mirasol, from the Philippines, was held on the ship until it arrived in Fort Lauderdale on March 3rd. He was asked questions by officials from Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators found many videos of naked women and pictures of children being sexually abused when they looked at his phone, SD card, and USB stick, according to the written statement. One of the videos showed Mirasol putting a camera in a bathroom of a guest cabin.

A 10-year-old girl went into the bathroom, took off her clothes, and took a shower all in a five-minute video.

Mirasol said he had been putting cameras in bathrooms since he started working on the ship in December when talking to investigators.

“I want to manage it, but I’m unable to,” he told investigators, as stated in the affidavit. He said he knew it was wrong to film young girls who are under age. The agents wanted to know how he decided where to place the cameras. “He said, ‘If I like the people in that room, I will put it there. ‘”

Besides the secret cameras, Mirasol told the agents that he would sneak into rooms while guests were showering and hide under the bed. He would then film them while they were getting dressed, according to the official statement.

Royal Caribbean said they have fired Mirasol and are working with the investigation.

“We do not accept this behavior at all,” the statement said.

Mirasol has a lawyer named Robert Berube who works for the government. He said he won’t talk about the case in an email. Mirasol stayed in jail in Broward County on Wednesday.

South Africa requests UN court issue additional orders to stop hunger in Gaza

South Africa asked the United Nations to make Israel give food and supplies to the people in Gaza who are starving. They believe Israel’s military actions in Gaza are breaking the Genocide Convention. Israel is saying that they did not break the agreement.

South Africa asked for more help from the International Court of Justice because the situation in Gaza, where many people are suffering from hunger, has gotten worse due to Israel breaking the rules.

In January, lawyers for Israel said that the war in Gaza was to protect its people. They also said that Hamas militants were the ones responsible for killing a large number of people. The Israeli foreign ministry did not respond right away on Wednesday night to South Africa’s new request.

Aid groups say that Gaza is facing a big problem, and the situation is especially bad in the isolated north. Many of the around 300,000 people who still live there have to eat food that is usually given to animals in order to survive. The United Nations It is said that one out of every six children under two years old in the north is suffering from severe malnutrition.

“South Africa is asking the Court to act quickly to help save the Palestinians in Gaza from starving to death. ” This was stated in a written request from South Africa.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Wednesday that even though aid workers had a lot of problems, they were able to do a lot more to help people in February. The report said there was a 48 per cent increase in helping missions compared to the month before.

However, the office also said that they are having trouble helping people because they had to stop working in the northern areas and the safety of civilians and aid workers has been getting worse.

South Africa said Israel broke rules set by the court on Jan. When judges told Israel to stop people from dying or being hurt in Gaza, but didn’t say they had to stop using their military in the area.

On Wednesday, South Africa asked the court to tell Israel to quickly provide help for hunger and other problems. It asked the judges to make decisions quickly without having a meeting first because the situation was very urgent.

The fighting started when Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. In 2007, Palestinian fighters killed 1,200 people and took 250 hostages. Over 100 of them were set free during a week of peace in November.

The attack led to Israel sending troops into the area where 2. 3 million people live. Yesterday, the Health Ministry in Gaza reported that 30,717 Palestinians have died in the war. The ministry is a part of the government run by Hamas and keeps careful records of people who have been hurt or killed. It doesn’t count separately the number of civilians and soldiers killed. Instead, it says that about two-thirds of the people killed are women and children.

The number of people who have died has kept going up since January.

HH, RUTO AND AKUFO ISSUE JOINT STATEMENT IN ECONOMIST MAGAZINE ON THE REFORM OF THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM

HH, RUTO AND AKUFO ISSUE JOINT STATEMENT IN ECONOMIST MAGAZINE ON THE REFORM OF THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM

President Hichilema writes…

Fellow citizens,

Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana, William Samoei Ruto of the Republic of Kenya and myself have issued a joint statement in the ‘Economist’ Magazine, on the need to reform the global financial system that must treat Africa fairly.

We thank the ‘Economist’ Magazine for publishing the statement.

Below is the statement:

The conversation on reforming the global financial architecture has often felt more like Africa against the rest of the world, but the tide is turning. Governments north and south agree that there is something fundamentally wrong with the system and it must be fixed. As the leaders of Ghana, Kenya and Zambia, we have first-hand experience of the precarious financial situation facing many African countries, especially when it comes to debt and development finance. And we are all too familiar with the flaws in the system that is in place to confront these challenges.

The current system needs more than just adjustment—it needs an overhaul. Africa must be at the centre of these reforms, but our criticisms have for too long fallen on deaf ears. Now that the world is beginning to listen, we must go beyond criticism and do what is needed for our economic development and emancipation. Several things are critical to this agenda.

First, African leaders must be bold in promoting their ideas and participating when decisions are being made that affect the continent. The three of us have made it clear that we will not sign on to global regulations and agreements that are not shaped with our input.

We are committed to being a strong voice for Africa. We need to ensure that lower-income countries have sufficient access to concessional finance through the World Bank’s International Development Association (ida).

To that end, Kenya has agreed to host the ida21 conference in April and we are working hard to drive the fundraising for this critical form of finance. Kenya has also agreed to co-lead two bodies to tackle the climate challenge in developing countries. The first, in conjunction with the African Union (au), Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Colombia, the European Commission, France and Spain, looks at opportunities to tax sectors, activities and transactions that could yield billions in climate finance for the countries most affected by climate change, many of which are in Africa. The second is a coalition of experts convened with Colombia, France and Germany, looking at how unsustainable debt is keeping many developing countries from investing in climate and conservation, and what can be done about it, including innovations like “debt-for-nature swaps”: debt relief in exchange for green initiatives.

Second, Africa must look within for solutions. We must invest our borrowing in the continent’s growth, job creation and revenue generation rather than in consumption that will not pay us back in the long run; make sure development projects are high-quality, priced correctly and finished on time; and start looking to each other as major trading partners rather than overseas.

It is time for a serious conversation about the high cost of capital that burdens Africa, which is based on unfair risk premiums and inaccurate valuation of our economies. Many African countries have assets that are not reflected on our balance-sheets. We have to strengthen African institutions, and we expect those strengthened institutions to assist in valuing our economies correctly, working with international financial institutions to get this right.

The three of us recently helped to launch the Africa Club, an alliance of African multilateral financial institutions that will serve as a powerful negotiator on behalf of the continent, co-ordinate with global financial institutions and leverage African countries’ balance-sheets to increase investment and jobs. It is critical that these institutions have the full weight of au member states behind them and the appropriate capital to continue serving Africa’s development. To this end, Ghana has proposed that each African country go beyond its existing paid-in capital and invest a minimum of 30% of its sovereign reserves in African multilateral institutions.

Third, we must bring the world to Africa. We have spent the past few years attending summits in a variety of countries that want to do business with our continent. Now it is time for our fellow world leaders to come to us. In that spirit, Ghana has proposed, and we all support, an annual African Economic Summit involving heads of state and government from around the world. Our hope is that this becomes the fulcrum around which we will deal with our major growth-and-development issues. Kenya will host the first summit in 2025, then Zambia in 2026 and Ghana in 2027.

Finally, we must speak with one voice on our reform agenda. Over the past three years a coalition of African policy institutes, the au, the un, finance ministers and civil society have been working together to define and advocate a collective African agenda for improving the global financial architecture. This coalition has identified key areas for action. They include charting a green growth-and-investment path for the continent; increasing concessional finance; channelling special drawing rights currently held at the imf to African financial institutions so they can be leveraged for development finance; finding a robust solution to the debt crisis, which will require overhauling the Common Framework, a debt-restructuring blueprint introduced by the g20 in 2020; and increasing Africa’s role in global decision-making.

These are ambitious but achievable targets. We have already seen progress, for example in gaining a seat for the au at the g20, making it the g21. It is up to Africa to use that seat wisely and present a clear vision for global reform.

There is a line in scripture: “Faith without works is dead.” You cannot believe in something and do nothing about it. 2024 is the year to move from talk to action, and to insist on a fairer global system that works for Africa. ■

Nana Akufo-Addo is the President of Ghana. William Samoei Ruto is the President of Kenya. Hakainde Hichilema is the President of Zambia.

INDECENT SOCIALISM: Practice Politics Of Decency – M’membe Schooled

INDECENT SOCIALISM: Practice Politics Of Decency – M’membe Schooled

Socialist Party President Fred M’membe has been advised to refrain from making statements solely to gain political mileage through the media.

The opposition leader has been schooled on practicing issue-based politics if Zambians are to take him seriously as an alternative.

In recent weeks, Dr M’membe has issued statements in the media ranging from giving fake mealie meal prices in Milenge District, where he claimed the country’s staple food was fetching as high as K850 for a 25kg bag—prices which the local leadership in the said regions dismissed as untrue—to claiming that President Hakainde Hichilema’s government did not care for the plight of traders at the demolished Munyaule market in Lusaka.

Reacting to Dr M’membe’s current political style, UPND Deputy Media Director Cheelo Katambo said it was unfortunate that the Zambian people were being subjected to mediocre politics at the expense of development.

“It is not true that Munyaule market traders have been left on the streets as claimed by Dr M’membe and it is also not true that the traders were not given notice to vacate. That fact is that they were given notice and the period expired,” he explained.

“The correct position is that the traders from Munyaule market have either been moved to Simon Mwewa Lane or City Market as alternatives because we want to build a modern market at Munyaule with proper sanitary and other trading facilities.”

Katambo said it is, therefore, untruthful and wrong for Dr M’membe and his group to allege that the UPND and President Hichilema are heartless and left marketeers on the street.
“He should stop telling lies. Let him practice politics of decency because it is not normal for him to continue to gain political mileage through lies. Let him practice issue-based politics. We cannot continue allowing people to trade in unconducive environments. Munyaule market had no sanitary facilities and neither did it have security for our valued traders whose interests are top of our agenda,” he said.

Katambo further said that it is unfortunate that the opposition uses political lenses even in situations that require socio-economic lenses.
“We need proper, modern markets in Lusaka and other places. We cannot continue to have our traders do business in such places. Also, marketeers should understand that this government wants traders to conduct their businesses in proper markets. They should not entertain such politicians because they don’t come with good motives. Let us not use politics when dealing with people’s health and the economy,” Katambo emphasized.

He challenged the opposition to be relevant; observing that currently, there is no meaningful opposition in the country.

Kapiri man jailed for tattooing an old woman’s buttocks

By Isaac Zulu in Kapiri Mposhi

THE Kapiri Mposhi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday convicted a 44-year old man for indecently assaulting and tattooing an 81-year old blind woman on the buttocks.

And the same 44-year-old Kapiri Mposhi based self-professed witchdoctor has vowed to abandon practice following his conviction and imprisonment for unlawfully wounding and indecently assaulting the woman whom he falsely accused of being a witch.

In this matter, Million Mumba of Lyimbika village in chief Mukonchi’s area was appearing before Kapiri Mposhi magistrate Mwila Malupande charged with three counts of unlawful wounding, indecent assault and naming a person as a witch respectively.

The offences were committed against Leya Konani, a resident of the same village.

In the first count Mumba was charged with the offence of unlawful wounding.

Particulars of the offence were that Mumba on Jan 28, 2024 unlawfully wounded Konani by cutting tattoos on her forehead and buttocks.

In count two, Mumba was indicted for indecent assault on females.
Particulars of the offence were that Mumba indecently assaulted Konani when he undressed her to mark tattoos on her buttocks.

In the third count, Mumba stood charged with an offence of naming a person to be a witch.

Particulars of the offence were that Mumba on 28 Jan 28, 2024 named, indicated, accused or threatened to accuse Konani of being a witch.

Mumba pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

During trial the prosecution led evidence from four witnesses among them the complainant, Konani.

She testified that on the material day whilst she was home, Mumba arrived at her place and asked for water to wash his hands as he had come with nshima in his hands.

She said when he was served with water and subsequently washed his hands, Mumba told Konani that he had seen a mermaid in her house and that he had been advised by the victim’s her daughter to remove it.

The second witness was Bridget Mbasela, granddaughter to Konani, who narrated how Mumba first undressed himself completely.

She said Mumba later undressed her grandmother before he started cutting tattoos on her buttocks using a razor blade with the help of his wife who was parting Konani’s buttocks.

The third witness was Jessica Musonda, Konani’s daughter to who testified that on January 26, 2024 Mumba was passing by her house when he told her that the mother was a witch.

Mumba claimed that Konani was keeping a mermaid in her house which he could help to remove if he was given K5,000.

However, Mumba was told that the family did not have such money but in the process Konani, the complainant offered him her blankets and allowed him to perform his rituals to remove the mermaid.

The court heard that Mumba made a concoction of herbs which were administered on Konani through marking tattoos using a razor blade on her forehead and buttocks after undressing her.

The court heard that after a failed attempt to find the marmaid at Konani’s house, the following morning Mumba went into the bush carrying the complainant on his back to go and catch the fertish but only came back later with a bunch of mushrooms.

However, Mumba’s failure to catch the marmaid as promised enraged villagers who descended on him and beat him up together with his wife before he was apprehended by a Communality Crime Prevention Unit who handed him over to the police.

And when placed on his defence, Mumba told the court that on January 26, 2024 he stopped over at the complainant’s daughter who told him that her family had a problem because Konani had a mermaid and that the neighbour’s child had seen it.

Mumba told the court that he offered medicine which he could give to the complainant to help catch the mermaid.

He said he was shocked that on the day he was attempting to catch the mermaid, over 400 villagers turned up to watch when he just invited family members and the village headman.

The now convict told the court that a hoard of villagers later descended on him and started beating him and his wife who was helping in rituals to catch the mermaid.

In passing judgment, magistrate Malupande noted that the prosecution had proved the case against Mumba on all the charges.

On counts one and two, magistrate Malupande observed that it was not in dispute that Mumba tattooed the complainant with a razor blade and caused her wounds and indecently assaulted her when he undressed her to cut the same tattoos on her buttocks.

Magistrate Malupande further added that there was overwhelming evidence to prove that Mumba called and named the complainant as a witch, further stating that in Zambia a person who is believed to have a mermaid is regarded as a witch.

She added that attempts by Mumba to administer unknown herbal medication and tattooing and the performance of going into the bush to catch the mermaid after a failed attempt of finding it at the complainant’s house was in itself instigating or insinuating that Konani was a witch.

In mitigation, Mumba begged the court to exercise lenience on him, saying he had repented after while in police custody.

He pleaded that he would never practice as a witchdoctor again as it had landed him in problems.

But magistrate malupande observed that the practice of rituals on an 81-year-old woman was barbaric and should not be condoned especially that she was a vulnerable, old and blind woman.

“You went there to remove the ililomba which you knew never existed, thereby causing confusion in the family. Basically, you went there as a scammer to milk the family of money,” said magistrate Malupande.

She then sentenced Mumba to 12 months imprisonment from the date of arrest for unlawful wounding in the first count, and fined him K225 in default two weeks imprisonment for naming the complaint a witch in count three.

Magistrate Malupande further convicted Mumba on the charge of indecent assault on a female, but committed him to the High Court for mitigation and sentencing as she has no jurisdiction to pass judgment in such matters.
