Zim Health Minister says mathematics is not needed for nursing training

0

Zimbabwe’s Health and Child Care Minister, Dr Douglas Mombeshora has explained why mathematics is not a mandatory entry requirement for those wishing to study nursing in the country.

Addressing newsmen following an advert which mentioned English and Science as compulsory subjects for nursing training, Mombeshora stated that they do not consider mathematics as a mandatory subject for nursing training because it is not relevant in the medical field. He said they have retained science because it is relevant to nursing training.

He said;

“Maths is a requirement in terms of training in the medical field. Let’s start with medicine. I am a medical doctor. The key subject for you to go into medicine is chemistry. so we have retained science subjects as a key subject to go into nursing. We are actually leaving a lot of people who have the capacity and capabilities out of the training because of Maths. We know very much that Maths has not been a subject that has been passed well. So the policy that our President says ‘Leaving no one and no place behind’, we also want to make sure that people should not be disadvantaged by just putting a subject with no relevance to the training.”

The Minister also disclosed that the government is considering removing English from the list of compulsory subjects for admission into nursing training. Membeshora added that since all other subjects considered for nurse training are taught in English, passing English itself should not be deemed necessary. According to him, pursuing a career in nursing does not equate to pursuing a degree in English, making it an unnecessary requirement.

He said;

“We are still looking into a way of recruiting more people who are committed to nursing and we are still looking at other issues like. ‘Is passing English with a C important?’ because anyone who has passed any of these subjects has been taught in English and if you go to universities outside Zimbabwe let’s say English for communication and not to pass English as if you want to go and do a degree in English. So we will keep on reviewing and make sure that we make accessibility to training in various disciplines affordable and accessible to all citizens of Zimbabwe.”

Ethiopian opposition figure shot dead

A prominent Ethiopian opposition official from the sensitive Oromia region was found shot dead on Wednesday, April 10, a few hours after being arrested by government forces, his party said.

Bate Urgessa of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) party was released on bail last month following his detention alongside French journalist Antoine Galindo.

The 41-year-old was arrested again late on Tuesday, April 9, by “government armed forces” at a hotel in the town of Meki, 150 kilometres (90 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa, OLF spokesperson Lemi Gemechu told AFP.

“He was then briefly taken to a detention centre in the city,” Lemi said.

“Bate’s family confirmed that he was found dead on a road in a place called Melissa, on the outskirts of Meki town,” he said, adding that he had been shot.

The body was found on Wednesday morning, he said, adding that they could not tell if the forces who arrested Bate were from the federal or regional government.

There was no immediate comment from the federal government but the regional authorities said attempts to blame it for the “assassination” were not acceptable.

“The Oromia Regional State strongly condemns the killing of Bate Urgessa, which was carried out by an unidentified body,” it said on its official Facebook page.

OLF, which considers itself the mouthpiece of the populous Oromo people, said in a statement that it had learnt about the death “with agony and grave sadness”.

“The unwarranted and extrajudicial killing of conscious and active Oromo political and cultural figures has been a systematic and irresponsible act of silencing the Oromo throughout years and decades,” it said.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) — an independent state-affiliated body — on Wednesday urged both the regional and central governments to conduct a “prompt, impartial and full investigation” into Bate’s killing.

“Hold perpetrators to account,” EHRC chief commissioner Daniel Bekele said on X, formerly Twitter. Human Rights Watch also made similar appeals.

Bate had been held in Ethiopian prisons on several occasions. On February 22, he was arrested in Addis Ababa in the company of Galindo, a journalist with the specialist publication Africa Intelligence.

The two men were accused of conspiring “to create chaos” in the country. Bate was released on March 6, a week after Galindo.

In 2022, he had been released on health grounds after a year in detention.

Actor Cole Brings Plenty’s death investigation indicates no foul play was involved

An investigation into the death of actor Cole Brings Plenty has found that no foul play was involved in his sad demise.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office released an update after the actor was found dead last Friday at the age of 27 in a wooded area in Kansas.

The Lakota actor is the nephew of Yellowstone star Mo Brings Plenty, 54, and appeared in the prequel 1923.

‘Detectives, crime scene investigators, and the Medical Examiner’s Office have been working diligently with the Lawrence Police Department and the Brings Plenty family. There is no indication of foul play in the death of Cole Brings Plenty,’ said a statement released by Sheriff Calvin Hayden.

The actor’s cause of death is not known.

Mo had shared a missing person poster of his nephew on Instagram on Tuesday (April 2), announcing that Cole had been last seen the previous Sunday, ‘Easter night’.

Kansas police had issued an affidavit for Cole’s arrest in relation to a domestic violence incident on Sunday.

The Lawrence, Kansas Police Department stated on Tuesday afternoon April 2 that officers submitted an affidavit to the Douglas County District Attorney for the arrest of Cole.

Officers received reports of a ‘female screaming for help’ on Sunday morning at an apartment in Lawrence, according to 12News.

It was alleged that Cole had ‘driven away from the scene and was thought to be headed southbound on Highway 59,’ the site claimed. He was last known to be driving a white 2005 Ford Explorer with a Kansas license plate.

The missing person’s poster from Mo’s Instagram reported that Cole missed a scheduled appointment with his agent for a TV show, a behaviour described as ‘uncharacteristic’.

The poster also highlighted that his cell phone was switched off.

Cole, known for his role as sheepherder Pete Plenty Clouds in 1923, was last spotted leaving Lawrence, Kansas, in his car on Sunday night, as indicated by the poster.

Mo’s Yellowstone co-star, Cole Hauser, who portrays Rip Wheeler in the series, also shared the poster on his Instagram, urging followers to provide any information if they have seen Cole since Easter evening in Kansas City.

NO ILLEGAL TRANSACTIONS IN MALANJI’S BANK ACCOUNT, STATE WITNESS TELLS COURT

……says as of 2017, Stanbic bank declared Joseph Malanji a platinum client after determining that he was the high earning client

Lusaka… Thursday, April 11, 2024

A banker has told the Lusaka Magistrates Court that former Foreign Affairs minister Joseph Malanji had no illegal transactions in his bank account at Stanbic bank.

Eugene Kana, the private relations manager also told the court that as of 2017, Mr Malanji held a platinum account after being declared as the high earning client.

Kana was testifying in a matter in which Malanji and former secretary to the treasury, Fredson Yamba are charged with 10 counts of willful failure to comply with laid down procedures and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Yamba is charged with two counts of willful failure to comply with laid down procedures while Malanji is facing eight counts of being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

When the matter came up for continued trial, today, Kana narrated how some Drug Enforcement Commission -DEC officers requested for some bank statements and mandate files for Malanji.

“Sometime in March 2021, the bank was approached by DEC officers who requested for the customer bank statements and customer mandate files for Mr Joseph Malanji. I accessed the bank system called FINACAL using the username and bank password to retrieve the bank statement. The dates In question where from October 2020 to December 2021,” said Kana.

“As for the customer mandate files, our efforts to locate the files failed but we do keep electronic copies. The officers did return after some time and requested details of specific transactions on the bank statements. I took screenshots, had them printed and sent them. The document were later handed over to the officers from DEC.”

And in cross examination, asked by senior counsel Makebi Zulu on what type of account Honorable Malanji had, the witness said Platinum.

Further asked if as at 2017, it was determined that honorable Malanji was a high earning client, Mr Kana responded in affirmative.

And asked if there was any illegal transactions in his bank transfers and deposit, the witness said no.

“As of 2017, was it determined that Joseph Malanji was the high earning client?,” Asked Makebi

“Yes”, responded the witness

“And there was no report of suspicious deposits?, ” Asked Makebi.

“Not that I’m aware of,” said the witness.

“Was there anything wrong with the transations in his bank account?,” Makebi asked.

Mr Kana responded saying “No, there wasn’t,”.

The matter has been adjourned to June 18, 2024.

IT’S CHIMBWI NO PLAN GOVT, IT’S LIES AFTER LIES – SIKOTA

By Fox Correspondent
THE UPND administration should desist from telling lies in the manner they are doing as doing so will not help them correct their mistakes, United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) chairperson Sakwiba Sikota has warned.

And Citizens First president Harry Kalaba says lies is the hallmark of the UPND government, adding that there is no truth in what the UPND say and do.

Kalaba said this after Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu lied that Government is not blocking opposition political parties from holding public rallies, saying that Citizens First party had been given permit to hold its rally in Nchelenge.

He said it was shocking that despite Mwiimbu knowing very well that his police officers could not allow a mobilisation political rally in Nchelenge, went ahead to expose his ignorance and ended up lying to the people of Zambia.

“That is the problem when you want to fool people, you end up fooling yourself. The fact is democracy in Zambia is at its lowest. You cannot trust these people in government. Look at how confused they have been over Fr. Mukosa, in the night they plot to arrest him, after the plot backfires they retreat and start accusing each other,” he said.

Kalaba, said the minister was telling lies by insinuating that his party was given a permit to hold a public rally in Nchelenge.

He said the police blatantly refused a request by Citizens First to hold a public rally on April 11, 2024.

“Minister Jack Mwiimbu has lied by insinuating that Citizens First was given a permit to hold public rally because it is a legal entity, those are are total lies,” he said.

And Sikota has accused the UPND of blocking the registration of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) as a political party through delay tactics.

Sikota, said the statement from government that the Alliance was an illegal entity was part of the delay tactics being used to delay its registration.

Sikota said this during a media briefing in response to Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, who had earlier on Wednesday declared the alliance as an illegal entity as reported by Zambia Monitor.

He wondered how the minister could deny the Alliance the opportunity to hold a rally in Kafue without thoroughly explaining the reasons behind such a decision.

“The Alliance has appealed to Minister Mwiimbu against the Zambia Police Service denial for a permit to hold a rally this Saturday in Kafue District,” Sikota indicated.

Sikota said that the denial by Mwiimbu on the grounds that UKA was an illegal entity was in contravention of the the Zambian Constitution.

He claimed that there was arbitrary implementation of the Public Order Act and this had been proved by the fact that the Inspector-General of Police had made a blanket and arbitrary declaration that there shall be no public rallies.

“The law does not give him this power and we implore you to restore the rule of law in Zambia by reversing this blanket ban on public rallies and meetings that has been unconstitutionally declared. They are doing things in a chimbwi no plan manner,” Sikota advised.

The Human Rights Commission Calls On The Zambia Police Service To Respect Human Rights And Stop Violations

0

THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CALLS ON THE ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE TO RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS AND STOP VIOLATIONS

The Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) wishes to strongly condemn the Zambia Police Service for continued violations of fundamental human rights.

The continued reports of violations of human rights by the police, which include violations of the right to life through extra-judicial killings, arbitrary arrests and detentions and torture of suspects are extremely worrying and must immediately be stopped.

The Commission is calling on the police to always uphold their constitutional obligation of upholding the Bill of Rights as they enforcement the law.

The increasing cases of police officers using live ammunition against defenceless, unarmed and non-violent suspects as well as alleged acts of torturing suspects during arrests and interrogations show a very worrying pattern of human rights violations.

The Commission is currently investigating several cases of extra-judicial killings, alleged torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of suspects, as well as other violations of human rights relating to security of the person. These investigations are in line with the Commission’s constitutional mandate and are aimed at preserving life as well as securing remedial measures for suspects and/or family members of affected persons.

The Commission takes this opportunity to earnestly appeal to individuals or institutions that may have information or evidence of human rights violations to contact the Commission on the Toll Free Line 8181, or use other available means to report such cases.

Meanwhile, the Commission calls upon the Inspector General of Police to demonstrate commitment and leadership in condemning and ending police arbitrariness, brutality and other forms of flagrant violation of human rights being perpetrated under his command. In this vein, the Commission reiterates its message of willingness to partner with the Zambia Police Service in training and re-training officers in human rights-based policing techniques.

It is the expectation of the Commission that the Police Command will not only end up at regretting the grave violations of human rights such as depriving suspects of their right to life, but also institute thorough investigations to ensure that all the culprits are brought to book in order to end any emerging impunity.

My father assisted me buy Sinda Farm, Tasila Lungu tells court

0

Daddy helped me buy Sinda farm- Tasila

CHAWAMA member of parliament Tasila Lungu says she bought her Sinda farm in Eastern province with the help of her father Edgar Lungu, therefore the State cannot say it was dubiously acquired.

She said Lungu who is former republican president has not been involved in crime or committed a serious offense.

Tasila made the submission before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court after it exercised its discretion to allow her file a defense explaining how she acquired the property.

The Court had set judgement for April 19 in Tasila’s forfeiture case after she failed to file an affidavit opposing the motion by the DPP to have the farm confiscated for having been illegally acquired.

Tasila also failed to show up for hearing of the main matter which was slated in February forcing the Court to set a judgement date as the DPP’s motion was unopposed.

But the law maker pleaded with the Court not to render judgement without giving her an opportunity to be heard.

She asked the EFCC to allow her file an affidavit in opposition out of time, and the application was granted.

In this case the State wants to forfeit Tasila’s farm no. F/2278 in Sinda district which has fish ponds constructed at K13, 950, 378.83 which was way beyond her income.

But in an affidavit of interested party filed in opposition to originating notice of motion Tasila explained that she did not engage in crime to acquire Farm no.F/2278.

She said Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) investigations officer under the Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit, Emmanuel Khondowe has not afforded her sufficient details to enable her understand and meaningfully respond to the allegations of criminal nature.

Tasila said the investigator has not mentioned any analysis of her income and earnings before the period of investigations between June 11, 2015 to August 31, 2021.

“The deponent has not disclosed his qualifications as an expert witness either qualified as an auditor or an accountant; or with any other financial accounting background or expertise ; to enable him to gather financial information, analyze the said financial information and make conclusions deductions or indeed render an opinion as to my income or expenditure or variation thereof in the absence of such qualifications and in the absence of a proper financial audit,”she stated.

Tasila said Khondowe has not demonstrated that he is a qualified person or an expert witness to render his opinion to the court on financial matters.

She stated that the only development on the farm is a servants quarter and an unfinished structure with no roof partially up to window level, and it has not been connected to the power grid.

Tasila claimed the land is bare and has some holes excavated with no drainage or pipes nor any construction whatsoever.

“The bill of quantities is therefore deliberately misleading, untrue and intended to depict developments and values that are intentionally inflated. Any alleged poultry structures or developments on the aforesaid property are in fact made of mud,”she stated.

“I categorically deny and oppose the allegations that the value of the property in issue as at November 2022, was K13,950,378.83, which I verily believe is incorrect and purposely inflated.”

The law maker said Khondowe has failed to mention that her father is a former Head of State hence the reason she is being investigated following the change of government in August 2021 and described the same as malicious.

“I was assisted by my family particularly my father Dr Lungu to purchase and towards which purchase I also contributed as I could from my available financial means, I wish to strongly dispute the deponent’s allegations that it is from proceeds of crime, or proceeds of serious offence or a foreign serious offense,”Tasila explained.

“It is my constitually guaranteed right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty and that allowing these proceedings based on mere accusations with no substantial evidence or specifics which attributed guilt associated with the acquisition of the property without prior conviction are breach of my said Constitutional right to be presumed innocent.”

She added that the proceedings are unconstitutional and a violation of her rights to self incrimination, as they seek to elicit information or evidence where there is none tendered by the State ,so as to support allegations of criminal activity associated with her property.

“The said proceedings intend to deprive me of my property with no basis in the absence of cogent evidence is an infringement of my Constitutional right to property. I believe that my Constitutional right to a fair trial must equally be respected and that regard must be had to due process,” said Tasila.

UKA IS NOT AN ILLEGAL ENTITY… UPND Govt has been a stumbling block towards its registration as political party – SIKOTA

UKA IS NOT AN ILLEGAL ENTITY – SIKOTA

… says the UPND Government has been a stumbling block towards its registration as political party.

LUSAKA, WEDNESDAY, 10TH APRIL, 2024 [SMART EAGLES]

The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has insisted that the UPND government has been a serious stumbling block towards the registration of UKA as a political party.

UKA Interim Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota says the government through state institutions such as the Registrar of Societies and the Police has been making the registration processes difficulty by using various delaying tactics such as turning down the three names that were initially reserved without explanation.

Mr. Sikota was speaking at a press briefing which was also attended by members of the UKA Council of Presidents including NDC’s Saboi Imboela, NHP’s Chishala Kateka, GPZ’s Jackson Silavwe and the Alliance Secretary General Lucky Mukula this afternoon.

He says the Alliance has written to authorities on different occasions to seek justification as to why the names settled for cannot be used but there has been no response since 21st February, 2024.

Mr. Sikota says if there is no response by Friday this week, the UKA Alliance will be forced to take the matter to the courts of law.

He says if government is not the one holding back the registration processes of UKA, the Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu should instruct the state institutions under his Ministry to respond to the letter that was sent to the Registrar of Societies.

Mr. Sikota has further urged Mr. Mwiimbu to avoid making unsubstantiated statements without facts because his office is the one supposed to hear the appeal in case the processes fail but he wondered how transparent the appeals process can be if the minister is the one in the forefront of being judgemental.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sikota says the Alliance has appealed against the decision by police to deny them from holding the planned rally in Kafue on the 13th April, 2024.

He says if there is no response by Friday, the alliance will take it that the police has no problem with the alliance going ahead with the planned rally.

Mwiimbu challenges UKA to produce certificate of registration

HOME affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu has challenged Facebook-based pressure group calling itself the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) prove its a legal entity by producing a certificate of registration.

After losing grip of the Patriotic Front to Miles Sampa, former president Edgar Lungu rounded up lonely opposition leaders and their one-man parties and created UKA with hopes of using it to contest the 2026 elections which will usher him back into power.

UKA has since hit the ground sprinting and intends to hold a public campaign rally in Kafue at the weekend but police have not granted them a permit.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, minsiter Mwiimbu said UKA’s intentions to hold a political rally cannot work because it is not recognised as a legal entity.

“They are even saying that they will participate in the election, well let them do so, it’s their constitutional right. Nobody stops anyone from participating in elections.

The minister further challenged UKA members to present a certificate of registration noting that as far as he was concerned, there was no such organization existing in the country.

“know that I will be insulted after this, but it’s my duty to inform the nation of the status and I challenge all those who are claiming to belong to UKA to produce a registration certificate that they have been registered,” Mwiimbu said.

Mwiimbu also revealed that the only thing that UKA did was making the name registration in February this year by its chairman l, Sakwiba Sikota through the register of societies which they said was for a pressure group.

However, the minister argued that the law requires that if one wants to register a pressure group, they should write to him as minister of Home Affairs and not to the register of societies, stating that he has not received any request till today of such kind up to now.

Further, Mwiimbu said police can not permit the alliance to go ahead with the rally because it was not registered.

Mwiimbu said that just this week, the Citizen’s First Party wanted to hold a public rally in Nchelenge and they notified the police who gave them a goal ahead.

“That is because the Citizens First is a legal entity established under the laws of the country otherwise, it would be irresponsible for the police to permit an illegal entity to do anything they want”.

Mwiimbu went on to say that as long as he exists, he does not know who UKA is legally.

“I don’t know who UKA is legally, I don’t know whether our people in this country want us to be dealing with illegal entities and I have no doubt in my mind that they want the law of this country to be followed. It is a duty and law enforces to ensure that that is done,” Mwiimbu said.

UPND Threw Away Cadres:

‘President HH to contextualise his statement’

It appears the statement ‘No Cadrism’ destroys interactions in UPND between grassroots and party or government officials. President Hakainde Hichilema’s statement has been taken out of context and it is time he contextualised his pronouncements before it is too late.

UPND cannot confirm when last they had interactions with their MPs or Ministrrs. Truth is UPND MPs and Ministers have no time for their people because according to them, President Hakainde Hichilema told them that ‘No Cadrism’ means no interactions with the grassroots.

Meanwhile opposition political party leaders or prominent cadres are given all the attention they need. So far PF former Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo says, “I Enjoyed engaging my big Sister Hon. Doreen Mwamba, Minister of Community Development and Social Services over tea this morning. Hon. Mwamba remains one of the most hard working Ministers in the new dawn government. She is sober and open minded and willing to listen to advice even from non-UPND circles. Hon. Mwamba and I believe that politics is not a way traffic but a dual carriageway that should flow with ideas from different people from different backgrounds. As politicians, our main goal is to uplift the lives of our people by delivering essential social services and not self aggrandizement”.

Bowman Lusambo has been seeing senior UPND government and party officials without restrictions whilst UPND members cannot. Beside Thabo Kawana and Doreen Mwamba, PF camp that includes Bowman Lusambo interact with a lot of UPND government and party officials.

If and when Matomola Likwanya complains, don’t think it is a lie.

FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU SPEAKS OUT, SUPPORTS JUSTICE

Greetings Colleagues and Comrades,

As we celebrate the win and qualification of our beloved Copper Queens to the Paris 2024 Olympics, allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Jacob Zuma and the South African Judiciary on the decision by the Electoral Court of Appeal to allow the former President to contest upcoming elections on the “uMkhonto WeSizwe” party’s Parliamentary candidate list, as commendable, admirable and inspiring. Two weeks ago, the Electoral Commission of South Africa barred Mr. Zuma from running for public office citing criminal record, a decision the Electoral Court of Appeal overturned on Tuesday, 9th April, 2024.

In a world where others question the ability of some countries to put clear and distinct differences between the roles of the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary, the South African Judiciary has displayed admirable high regard for constitutional integrity, reinstating core fundamentals of democracy and good governance by ensuring that all eligible and qualified candidates are given equal and fair chance to participate in the electoral process.

Just like the United States of America Supreme Court recently demonstrated by allowing President Donald Trump to contest the December, 2024 Presidential elections, the South African judiciary has loudly confirmed that, Africa is equally committed to upholding democratic principles of which equality of political opportunities for citizens to vote and contest elections as candidates is not just safeguarded but also promoted and guaranteed. As a nation and Southern Africa, we must commend and applaud our brothers and sisters across the Limpopo!

Ladies and gentlemen, the importance of an independent judiciary cannot be over emphasized. An independent judiciary is the bedrock of a fair and just society. This recent decision by the South African Judiciary augments the vital role it plays in upholding the rule of law, protecting democracy and ensuring justice. This gesture should be emulated by all and everyone across Africa.

Though Zambia’s democracy is a work in progress and will most likely see more reform in the future, we must take a leaf out of South Africa’s book. By doing so, we shall strengthen our democracy and foster a more just and equitable society. As, I have always emphasized, the independence of the judiciary is a cornerstone of any democracy. Without it, the principles of justice, democratic governance and rule of law become sharply compromised and completely undermined.

Hence, I totally agree with Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor when she said, “Judicial independence does not happen all by itself. It is hard to create, and it is easier than most people imagine to damage or destroy”. Therefore, our commitment to safeguard and respect the judiciary, rule of law as well as respect the tenets of separation of powers must be adhered to by all. Today, South Africa is our shining example!

We have done it before many times here, we can do it again today and tomorrow!

HON. JACK MWIIMBU’S STATEMENT ON UKA

HON. JACK MWIIMBU’S STATEMENT ON UKA

The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) is not
registered at the Registrar of Societies

Lusaka, 9th April, 2024

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security would like to make it abundantly clear that the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) is neither registered as a
political party nor as a Pressure Group by the Registrar of Societies.

You may wish to know that the Ministry has received several media queries on whether UKA is legally registered by the Registrar of Societies.

The recent media queries have been necessitated by media reports attributed to UKA that they intend to hold a political
rally on 13 of April, 2024 in Kafue and that they have resolved to participate in all By-Elections.

You may wish to recall that on 13th February, 2024 Mr. to Sakwiba Sikota SC, visited the Registrar of Societies office to conduct a name search and reservation for a society called United K wacha Alliance (UKA) which he intended to register as a pressure group After he said application, the name UKA was accordingly reserved from 13th February, 2024 to 13th March 2024 and Mr. Sikota was informed that he was free to apply for registration of the pressure group.

However, he returned on 14th February, 2024 with a verbal request to change the reservation category from a pressure group to a political party of which he was
advised to apply formally.

Following the expiration of the reservation on 13thMarch, 2024, Mr. Sikota came through to request for an extension of the reservation period.

By then, the Department had migrated the application processes to the e-government platform and the applicant was advised accordingly to make an online application and to date no such application has been received.

You may also wish to know that, a male person identified as Mr. Gibson Bwalya attempted to apply for registration of a society called Unified Kwacha Alliance using another person’s National Registration Card (NRC).

On a second attempt, Mr. Bwalya omitted
to attach an NRC.

These events clearly indicate that the said United Kwacha Alliance does not exist legally and is, in as far as the Ministry is concerned, an illegal society.

Take Note that the Ministry of Home affairs and Internal Security remains committed to ensuring that the Rights and Freedoms of all individuals as provided under the Constitution are respected and protected; including the Freedom of Association.

Therefore the claims by any individual or Association that the democratic space in Zambia is shrinking continue to remain unfounded and mere stunts to win public sympathy.

SHIRINKED DEMOCRATIC SPACE IN ZAMBIA WORRYING* Lukashya MP

………. as Hon. George Chisanga says UPND did not form government ALONE but as an ALLIANCE with other political parties

Kelvin Sichizya in Kasama.

April 10, 2024- KASAMA- The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has a right to hold its rallies as planned in Kafue or elsewhere becuase it it an ALLIANCE of registered political parties

Lukashya Member of Parliament in Kasama George Chisanga says in 2021 the United Party for National Development (UPND) did not campaign as a political party, but as an ALLIANCE.

Speaking on Radio Mano in Kasama today, Mr. Chisanga who is also PF Chairman for Legal Affairs said the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) does not need to be registered before it can hold rallies becuase it is comprised of registered political parties adding that there was no law stopping an Alliance from functioning.

He said claims by the police that Zambia lacks security hold no water adding that President Haakainde Hichilema has kicked off a Copperbelt tour for five (5) days during which his party as UPND would hold rallies.

He said the banning of rallies for the opposition was only meant to stop the former ruling party, the Patriotic Front (PF) and not security as the police claimed

He said the UPND had compromised institutions of governance such as the Human Rights Commission (HRC), the Electoral Commission Zambia (ECZ), unfortunately with the Judiciary as well and the National Assembly and many others to use them against other political parties such as the PF.

The PF Legal Affairs Chairman said UPND has dominated operations of the Registrar of Societies to change names of the PF office Bearers while it has completely destroyed the National Assembly where democracy had no space at all

He said the suspensions of the PF leadership in Parliament was unlawful saying the leaders such as Leader of the opposition in Parliament Hon. Brain Mundubile, Hon. Stephen Kampyongo who is supossed to be the Opposition Chief Whip and Hon. Anthony Kasandwe was simply meant to weaken and destroy the PF

Speaking on the Debt Restructuring, Mr. Chisanga said, yes, the PF borrowed to develop infrastructure especially in rular areas to reduce the development gap between the towns and villages the projects which he said the UPND government cancelled when it assumed power.

´China has been an all-weather friend´- EDGAR LUNGU

Staff Reporter-10.04.24

Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, the sixth President of Zambia has described the diplomatic relationship the country shared with China as ´warm´ adding that Asian giant is an ´all weather friend´.

The former President was speaking when he shared a geopolitical moment with Zambian author of a new book on China and international relations analyst Ambassador Anthony Mukwita at his residence in Lusaka on Wednesday.

“Our relationship with China as I recall it when I was President of Zambia was nothing but stellar and warm,” President Lungu said, “it is a relationship that needs nurturing, as you can see from the infrastructure coordination boost, we achieved, which today speaks for itself.”

The book entitled ´China in Africa the Zambia story´ outlines how, because of the good relationship President Lungu enjoyed with President Xi Jinping, infrastructure development sprouted since independence.

Examples of infrastructure development corporation between Zambia and China in the book, abound ranging from the $65 million Kenneth Kaunda ultra-modern conference centre that can host 54 heads of states, international airports, and power generation plants.

The power plants under Lungu notably include the 750 Kafue Gorge Lower Hydro Power plant at a cost of about $2billion.

Geopolitical analysts, however, feel the relationship between China and Zambia has waned to a low since President Lungu left office after the 2021 poll that ushered in the administration of President Hakainde Hichilema, seen by many as more ´western centric´ that east looking.

The book has a section discussing the role President Lungu played in enhancing further, the relationship between China and Zambia that clocks 60 years this year, including the relationship Zambia now has with China under President Hichilema.

It is available on Amazon and Takealot for international literature buffs, Bookworld and Grey Matter for Zambian readers, the second book by Mukwita, the first having been a bio take on President Lungu.

The book takes also takes a critical look at Zambia´s infrastructure debt to Zambia and President Hichilema´s late visit to Beijing that only occurred ten months after he assumed office compared to numerous trips, he had made to western capitals such as Washington DC, London, and Paris.

Book analysts have described as a ´breath of fresh air´ into the relationship Zambia has with the United States that often cris crosses with China.
Ambassador Mukwita described his meeting with the sixth President, “as humbling and educative.”

Dr. Lungu said it’s important for Zambia to uphold good diplomatic relations with as many countries as possible because the global village is forever shrinking.

Undermining national assets: the DA’s scheme to devalue and sell South Africa’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs)

A closer look at the DA’s motives and actions

In recent developments, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) strategies and actions have sparked significant controversy and concern regarding the future of South Africa’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs). A detailed examination of their efforts, particularly in relation to South African Airways (SAA) and Transnet, reveals a disturbing pattern aimed at devaluing these national assets for the benefit of US patrons.

The SAA deal collapse: Gordhan’s battle and warnings

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced last month the termination of a deal to sell a 51% stake in SAA to the Takatso consortium, attributing the cancellation to post-Pandemic market influences, which necessitated a revaluation of SAA’s assets. This revaluation highlighted significant discrepancies, leading to the deal’s collapse. Gordhan’s stance against using public funds for a legal battle against a parliament portfolio committee’s scrutiny of this failure underscores a larger issue: the manipulation of national assets’ values and the implications for South Africa’s sovereignty and economic stability.

The confidential letter: Gordhan’s critique and defence

A confidential letter from Gordhan lambasted the committee’s draft report on the failed SAA deal as irrational and biased. The letter reveals Gordhan’s fierce defence of the valuation process and his accusations against the committee of bias and predetermined outcomes. This confrontation reflects a deeper struggle over control and transparency in managing South Africa’s SOEs (Sunday World).

The DA’s role in privatizing Transnet

In a shocking revelation, the DA has been implicated in attempts to privatize and transfer control of Transnet to US investment firm BlackRock. This move, part of a broader agenda to privatize South Africa’s public sector, poses serious threats to national sovereignty, job security, and economic stability. The DA’s willingness to side-line significant investments in infrastructure modernization for American interests reveals a disturbing prioritization of foreign investments over national well-being (Savanna News).

Blackrock’s involvement: A corporate takeover

The potential transfer of Transnet to BlackRock, known for its global acquisitions and profit-driven management, represents a grave threat to South Africa’s economic sovereignty. The implications of such a transfer could lead to job losses, undermine local expertise, and jeopardize national interests in favor of external, profit-driven agendas. This scenario exemplifies the dangers of privatizing crucial national infrastructure and the need for vigilant protection of South Africa’s assets (Savanna News).

A call to action against the DA’s schemes

The Democratic Alliance’s actions, aimed at devaluing and selling off South Africa’s SOEs, represent a clear and present danger to the country’s future. By prioritizing the interests of US patrons over national well-being, the DA threatens the very foundation of South Africa’s economic sovereignty and stability. It is imperative for South Africans to recognize and challenge these schemes, ensuring that national assets remain under local control and serve the interests of the nation, not foreign investors. The revelations about the SAA and Transnet cases serve as a stark warning of the consequences of unchecked privatization and foreign influence in South Africa’s public sector.

HISTORY OF THE NAMWANGA PEOPLE OF NAKONDE

By Bwalya Mange

The Winamwanga people of Nakonde District are believed to have come from North East Africa together with the Tonga/Ila people of Southern province at about 900 BC. Hence some similarities in names between the Tonga’s and Namwanga’s such as Siame in Namwanga and Sianjunza in Tonga. Their lifestyle was a fugal system or nomadic life, meaning that they had no permanent residence.

As they come down, some of the Namwanga’s decided to settle in Tanganyila now called Tanzania while others proceeded to Northern Rhodesia now Zambia. In Tanzania, they spread to places like Mbeya, while those in Zambia settled in Mwenzo area western part of Nakonde District, some parts of Chinsali, Kasama and Mbala. The Tonga’s however
proceeded to Southern Zambia.

It must be noted that by this time, there were no borders available meaning that the Namwanga’s in Tannzania and Zambia shared everything including leadership. After the partitioning of boundaries, the headquarters of the Namwanga people remained in Tanganyika or Tanzania under Chief Mukoma. To this very day, the Paramount Chief of the
Namwanga people is based in Tanzania and only appoints a chief from there to rule over the Namawanga’s in Zambia.

The first chief appointed was Namulinda as Chief Nawaitwika to rule over the Namwanga’s on the Zambian side, when she died Namaipo was appointed as Chief Nawaitwika. Following her death in 1940, Malia was appointed as the third Nawaitwika from 1941 to 1999. Malia ruled for over 56 years, making her one of the longest serving chiefs in Zambia. After her death, Evelyn, who was born in Zambia and lived in Mufulira with her husband was later appointed as the current Chief Nawaitwika.

While at Mwenzo, a certain Bisa man from Mpika visited the place by the name of Musiani, it is believed that this man was very intelligent as a matter of factor, he even introduced firewood to the Namwanga’s. Before Musiani’s visit, the Namwanga’s we

While at Mwenzo, a certain Bisa man from Mpika visited the place by the name of Musiani, it is believed that this man was very intelligent as a matter of factor, he even introduced firewood to the Namwanga’s. Before Musiani’s visit, the Namwanga’s were eating raw food as nomads. Due to his intelligence, Musiani received a lot of favours from the indigenous people namely the Simwanzas, Sichalwes, Sichizyas and Sinkalas who also gave him a local Namwanga girl to marry. He was also given a chiefdom to become a chief. He however, deliberately refused to move from that place to the new village he was given. It is from this that the name Mwenzo comes from. When you deliberately refuse something in Namwanga it is called Umwenzonbyi.

Since this man was a foreigner, he was called Siame. The name Siame in Namwanga means a foreigner. To date, all the Siames are believed to have come from the Bemba land and as such are not Namwanga’s and so are the Simumbas and Nakambas. Other chiefs are Kafwimbi and Mwenechifungwe. these chiefs have their headquarters in Isoka District. The main traditional ceremonies practiced by Winamwanga are: Vikamkanimba, Ng’ondo, Chambo Chalutanga, and Mulasa.

Unique names

Winamwanga surnames are unique in that they contain gender signifiers. All the female surnames begin with “Na” while all the male surnames begin with “Si.” Unlike other ethnic groups in Zambia, who use such prefixes to mean “father-of” or “mother-of,” Winamwanga have the prefixes fixed with their surnames. We see examples of such use in names like Siwale, whose female counterpart is Nawale or Namwila, Simukonda and Namukonda, Sikapizye and Nakapizye, Sinkala and Nambela, Sichalwe and Nachalwe, etc. We find similar use of the prefixes among the Mambwe and the Lungu of Mbala and Mpulungu, respectively.

Among Winamwanga, females belonging to the royal clan may have a surname totally different from that of the males. For instance, males of the current royal clan carry the name Siame, while the females are called Nakamba. Among the Mambwe, however, Nayame is the female equivalent of Siame.

Food

Winamwanga grow millet, groundnuts, beans, maize, among other crops. They also rear cattle (a main store of wealth and currency for marriage transactions), sheep, goats, poultry and pigeons. Winamwanga are teased often by members of other ethnic groups for their fondness for kumbi or pupwe, a vegetable with a slippery quality like okra. It is prepared with baking soda or soaked charcoal ashes and mixed with beans. The kumbi is usually mixed with beans and served with nsima, (a thick maize meal porridge) common among Africans.

Courtship and marriage

As among other African cultures, traditional Winamwanga lack a concept of dating. Any form of premarital friendship between young males and females is strictly forbidden. Young people, however, find ways around the restrictions. To declare interest in marrying a woman, a man must give the woman of his interest money or beads.

HE MURDERED MY DAUGHTER: My daughter’s name was Mercy Chimombo Nzima

HE MURDERED MY DAUGHTER

My daughter’s name was Mercy Chimombo Nzima.

She was a Teacher in Kapiri Mposhi at Ipusukilo Primary School. She married a widower in 2013 by the name of Sabastian Mukakeni Nzima, an accountant by profession.

From the very beginning I didn’t approve of this union because I had heard some disturbing stories about his past relationships. There were rumours that he had made his late- former-wife blind and that she’d died in unclear circumstances. I pleaded with my daughter not to marry this man. My daughter insisted… and they were eventually married at Kitwe Civic Center without my consent or knowledge.

A short time after they married, he began physically abusing my daughter. He would beat her up after getting drunk but would always apologize the next morning. When my daughter was 8 months pregnant with her first child…my son-in-law beat her so severely that we reported him to Wusekile Police Station. He was arrested but he pleaded with my daughter not to take the matter any further. My daughter dropped the charges and the man was released. In 2017 I called for a family meeting asking that we compel my daughter to DIVORCE this man because I had a strong feeling that he would one day kill her.

On the 28th November, 2018, I got a phone call at 22hrs. When I looked at my screen it showed my daughter’s name. I thought it was her…but it was my son-in-law. “Mayo, come to Kalulushi quick. Mercy isn’t breathing so I’m taking her to the hospital now.”

I rushed to the Hospital only to find my daughter laying lifeless on the hospital bed. I asked the hospital staff what had happened. They said “Pray for your Child”. I looked closely at my daughter and I could see that she wasn’t breathing. I was confused. I turned to my Son-In-Law and asked him “What happened?” He said ” We were both asleep in bed and I just noticed that she wasn’t breathing, so I called you.” I knew he was lying. He wasn’t telling me the truth. I knew he hurt my baby. My daughter was pronounced DEAD.

Within a short time, my son-in-law’s family rapidly began funeral arrangements. I asked one of his family members about a postmortem. I was told, “That will take too long.”

My daughter’s funeral was conducted on 1st of DECEMBER 2018.

Right before the body viewing at the Church, someone approached me and said, “You have to come and confirm if the body in the casket is truly your daughter’s, because the body looks very different” I went to inspect my daughter’s body and discovered that she had turned “shoe – polish – black”…my daughter was a light skinned person…but her head and face had turned extremely DARK and her neck was noticeably swollen. I turned to the lady and said “Yes that’s my daughter but why has her face turned so BLACK in such a short space of time?” The lady had no answer. She just wanted to know from me if that was actually my daughter, Mercy.

At the Nsambo-yamfwa ( a traditional meeting held by both families after burial to discuss the fine details of the circumstances that led to the demise of a loved one) my son-in-law changed his story. He said, “I was watching TV in the sitting room then went to the bedroom and noticed that my wife wasn’t breathing.” At one point he seemed disoriented and incoherent as he tried to describe the events of that night. His story wasn’t adding up…the time-line of events wasn’t “jelling.”

All of this raised suspicion and our side of the family became incensed. Both families almost came to blows. It was at this point that my family insisted on a postmortem. We finally made arrangements for a postmortem to be carried out. My son-in-law’s family were informed that my daughter’s body would be exhumed on the 5th of DECEMBER, 2018 at 5:30am and a postmortem carried out and that THEY HAD TO BE PRESENT to witness the procedure.

None of my son-in-law’s family members showed up. Only my family was there, along with The Police, The Council and Health inspectors. The Pathologist was a white lady from Kitwe Teaching Hospital.

After the Pathologist examined my daughter’s body…she said, “This girl was murdered…Head trauma and asphyxia ( suffocation) Why don’t you people just DIVORCE these women instead of murdering them?”

My son-in-law was arrested and charged with murder that same day.

He was found at home watching TV

We are awaiting trial.

My daughter leaves behind 2 children.

Tanzania Railway Corporation receives Electric Trains from Hyundai Rotem, South Korea

The Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) has announced the arrival of the new Electric Trains that have just arrived in the country from South Korea.

The trains are the first ever Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains that have reached at the Dar es Salaam port and has made a significant leap towards the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project of the country.

It marks a great significant victory as the initial set consists of five electric locomotives and the three passenger cars. The newly designed trains offer a glimpse of the future of the developing passenger transportation in Tanzania.

The state-of-the-art Electric Multiple Unit trains are purchased by the Tanzania government from the Hyundai Rotem company of South Korea.

The Hyundai Rotem is a South Korean company that mainly manufactures rolling stock, defence products and plant equipment. Hyundai Rotem is a part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which is a car and automobile manufacturing company.

It was earlier known as just with the name Rotem but in December 2007 the officials changed the name to Hyundai Rotem that reflects the parent company too. It is also known as Hyundai Railroad Technology Systems.

The EMU trains by Hyundai Rotem has boasted impressive features that are designed for comfort and convenience.

Reportedly, each train can accommodate up to 589 passengers running on the tracks at the speed of 160 km per hour. The new train units have ensured that the passengers feel comfortable while travelling and enjoy the amenities such as Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.

CCTV cameras will be installed for enhanced security, and a designated seat will be allotted to passengers with special needs.

Considering this, the Tanzania Railway Corporation stated that they expect to receive a total of 10 sets of EMU, with the remaining units arriving monthly until October 2024.

The TRC has already received 65 passenger cars and 9 electric locomotives to further bolster its fleet. The arrival of the trains signifies a major milestone for the SGR project.

Notably, Phase-1 will cover the route from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, which is 300km and is at 98%, Morogoro to Makutupora at 96%, Makutopora to Tabora at 13.98 per cent and Tabora to Isaka at 5.44%.

The other sections of the EMU and TRC are at various stages of development, with Mwanza to Isaka showing significant progress. The entire project is anticipated to be completed and finalised by 2025.

Why South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma is doing what he is doing

I have seen many analytical posts detailing why former South African president, Jacob Zuma is doing what he is doing, and what his ultimate goal is if he succeeds in his political and electoral endeavours.

The missing link in these analytical pieces is REAL information from Jacob Zuma himself or his inner circle; what we are being mostly fed are just wild guesses.

Last year I mentioned that Zuma told a delegation of visiting Zimbabweans at Nkandla that he would run as an ANC breakaway candidate.

Jacob Zuma wants to be premier of KwaZulu-Natal in a coalition deal if his plan succeeds.

He knows that he can’t be president of South Africa again, and he is not stupid to think that he can now be one.

But he keeps pushing that narrative to deceive the media and ordinary citizens into not thinking about what he really wants, KZN Premiership.

KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa’s second biggest province by numbers after Gauteng, and it is the second biggest economy again after Gauteng.

Put differently, KZN’s economy is four times bigger than the Zimbabwean economy by Gross Domestic Product.

Zuma wants to be in charge of that KZN economy, he will be in charge of an economy which is FOUR times bigger than that of Zimbabwe if he succeeds, so it is a big deal.

He basically wants to create what the DA has in the Western Cape, and be the guy in charge, the big kahuna.

To do that, Zuma realized that he needed a political party, and that his political party needs to run for elections, but more importantly, that he also needs to run for elections himself to remain relevant.

That is why he challenged the Independent Electoral Commission’s decision to stop him from contesting in the May 29 elections.

Zuma’s hope is that his biggest scalp in KZN is the ANC, the party that he hoped in previous elections in KZN because it was his political home.

The Zulu King is also perceived to be in bed with the ANC, so Zuma wants to damage the ANC’s chances in KZN, and probably end up going into a governing coalition with the IFP, what his folks are calling the “local people coalition.”

However he has left room for a very remote chance of a local alliance with a damaged but very desperate ANC to run KZN with Zuma as the Premier.

It all comes down to money, Zuma knows that this is his last chance at anything political.

Another five years is a very long period in life for a man who is 81 years old.

Another problem for the ANC in KZN came after the ANC’s KwaZulu-Natal chairperson, Siboniso Duma’s perceived disrespect towards the Zulu traditional Prime Minister, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, when he took the microphone away from the traditional Prime Minister who is the IFP leader and insulted him.

Politics is local, so says the political science statement of choice when explaining political outcomes.

This disrespect to the traditional Prime Minister was seen as an act of undermining the dignity of the Zulu monarchy, something that has put the King in a difficult situation, but to Zuma, he sees it as an opportunity and a campaigning tool.

More importantly, Zuma and his people are whispering a deadly question: how can the IFP want to go into bed with a political party whose provincial chairperson disrespected the Zulu monarch?

This is the Machiavellian Zuma at play, and he is good at it regardless of what we might think of him.

The ANC understood this very well that is why Siboniso Duma immediately apologised.

Zuma has people in the ANC and in IFP too, he plays the puppet master role to them because politics is local.

The DA obtained the second place in four provinces won by the ANC in the 2019 South African elections.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the Inkatha Freedom Party beat the DA to second place for the first time since 2014, but there was no MK then.

Voters are weird beings, with all the self-evident damage that Zuma caused to the South African economy and country’s brand name when he was president, he still commands huge unconditional support which can be broken down into three parts:

  1. Africans adore a lovable rogue.

Anyone who purports to be fighting against a perceived foreign enemy whilst masking their corruptness gets support.

Look at Mugabe, Putin, and Trump, they would win continental elections in Africa because generally our people don’t read, and they generally don’t apply critical thinking in their political perspectives.

Support is based on emotions and not facts and numbers, like how much did Jacob Zuma’s presidency damage the South African economy?

  1. Zuma is seen as a victim of those aligned with the capitalist order.

It is a mirage, but that is how he is seen especially after his jailing for contempt of court, something that many cautioned against when it was evident that it would create Jacob Zuma the martyr.

He tells his supporters that he is fighting for the blacks of South Africa, yet the biggest winner of his nine year presidency was an Indian family from Eastern Uttar Pradesh in India.

Hardly an act of Black Empowerment at all, but why allow facts to get in the way, Zuma is their hero regardless.

  1. The final strand is the ethnic element which brings us to national politics when coalitions are being made if it gets to that.

Zuma is Zulu, and he will play on that in KZN, that is why he is caricaturing the ANC as “…the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa”.

It means “…he is not one of us, why vote for a stranger when you have Zuma your local warrior, one of your own,” so goes the reasoning when speaking to his inner circle.

In the event that the ANC needs to form a national coalition government, Zuma sees himself as a possible Kingmaker too.

So he needs to dent the ANC badly in KZN so that he can come to it, or rather it comes to him for a national governing coalition deal.

Politicians appear angry with each other in public, but privately they are talking, they always do.

Zuma is talking to ANC heavy eights, and the ANC is talking to Zuma through his chosen proxies, everyone is talking to the other sides for possible post-election deals.

These are people who have known each other for decades and ate pap from the same plate together.

What matters more to them is power and the proceeds that it brings, not the purported ideological disagreements or having the people at heart.

If Zuma or his ANC comrades with him in government had poor Black people at heart, the Guptas would not have happened, but again such facts get in the way of good propaganda that positions Zuma as a great pro-Black political player.

Zuma is like Emmerson Mnangagwa; you dismiss them at your own peril.

They are super political tacticians, and they are ruthless when they need to be, yet they do it with a smirky on the face.

Both ran security arms of their ruling parties during the struggle for independence, so they know a lot about everyone in politics!

If their tactical skills were deployed to national interest pursuits, their countries would be flourishing today with nobody going to bed on an empt stomach.

But they are just ordinary politicians; ordinary politicians care about themselves first, and on rare occasions, the country comes second if it will further their personal interests.

So while we are looking at the national issue post-May 29, Zuma’s focus is on KZN, and he will fight to be the real political King there. The first prize is being Premier.

This move will give him significant control over a major economic powerhouse within South Africa’s national economic engine room.

Zuma aims to weaken the ANC’s hold on KZN, possibly forming a coalition with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) or even a damaged ANC if need be, but as long as he is in charge of such a coalition.

This plan hinges on heavily denting the ANC’s strength in the province to position himself as a key player in potential national coalition negotiations.

Political elites in South Africa have survived on tenders like many African politicians, no wonder why Zuma would want to be premier of KZN, if he succeeds, it will be a new era of politics in South Africa, one that will require seat belts and helmets on.

How will the South African economy respond to all this if it comes to pass?

Check the exchange rate when it happens, the exchange rate always gives you the first economic indicator about how the world feels after elections in countries like South Africa with proper economic indicators.

South Africans will determine their political and economic fate on May 29, on that day they will determine Zuma’s fate, and in so doing they will be determining their own fate too.

It will be a big day for Africa too because South Africa is the biggest and sophisticated economy in Africa, it successes or failures are tied to the whole economy.

So for the sake of the African economy, South Africa must and has to succeed, but it is South Africans who will determine that.

And much as you hate him or like him, Zuma will probably be part of that future if they trust his word.

Will it be a demotion to become Premier when he has been President, not at all, it is a political move.

The former British Prime Minister David Cameron is now the British Foreign Minister, there’re may presidents too many to mention.

For Zuma, it will be about his own personal survival, economic personal survival.

Tendai Biti resignation exposes rifts, raises doubts about future of CCC

0

The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), is facing fresh turmoil after Tendai Biti, a prominent former MP and co-vice-president, announced a surprise departure.

Biti cited a need for a break from active politics and a desire to explore “other spaces” to fight for democratic change.

This move comes just weeks after party leader Welshman Ncube expressed confidence in uniting the opposition. Biti’s resignation, however, throws that strategy into question and exposes deep rifts within the CCC.

Biti’s decision follows a period of public backlash after the party announced a rotational leadership structure with Ncube, Biti, and Lynette Karenyi Kore at the helm. Many viewed this as a betrayal of the party’s original vision under Nelson Chamisa, who left the CCC earlier

Speaking on HSTV’s #FreeTalk show, Biti maintains that he was unaware of any such agreement and emphasises his continued commitment to democratic change in Zimbabwe.

He plans to focus on legal work, writing, and citizen activism while taking a break from formal political structures.

“As an individual, I occupy spaces, I am a lawyer, I am doing what I have been doing in the courts, with my strategic litigation.

“I am busy writing, I think we are going to produce a book before the end of the year on unpacking liberation movements and so forth.

“But as an individual I am also entitled to rest, to have a sabbatical and so forth. So I am in that mode of complete, I don’t want to say isolation, complete time out if you like, but I still remain driven, by the fact that we must have democratic change in Zimbabwe,” Biti said.

Investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono claims Biti is likely to leave the country. He added that his departure from opposition politics “marks a sad day”.

“Zimbabwe’s former Finance Minister and opposition leader, Tendai Biti, has taken a break from politics.

“Tendai Biti who has been offered job opportunities and fellowships with international financial institutions is likely to leave Zimbabwe anytime soon after accepting a fellowship in the United States.

“His departure marks a sad day in opposition politics as he was one of the bright sparks and intellectual politicians in Zimbabwe’s opposition movement,” Chin’ono said.

Biti’s departure is a blow to the CCC’s already fragile unity. Another faction within the party, led by Promise Mkwananzi, sees Biti’s move as vindication of their claims that the CCC cannot function without Chamisa’s leadership.

“This move if you are correct, my brother, goes on to show that the CCC had only one legitimate leader who was Nelson Chamisa, any attempt to masquerade as the leader of the alternative will fail as has been demonstrated by Welshman Ncube.

“Nobody can dispute that Chamisa was the legitimate leader of the CCC and recent developments vindicate us,” Mkwananzi said.

With Zimbabwe’s next general election expected in 2028, the opposition faces a critical juncture. Biti’s resignation is likely to weaken the CCC and raise questions about the party’s ability to mount a serious challenge to the ruling Zanu PF.

Chamisa however is reportedly working on launching his own movement, although the structure and form it will take has not been made clear yet.

Recently, President Emmerson Mnangagwa laughed off the internal power fights in the CCC, saying he “enjoys” their squabbles.

“If my opponents are fighting, I enjoy it. Why would I bother to say I want a strong opposition so that they can challenge me? It is good to have opposition, our laws allow opposition.

“This is why opposition parties are here. They have their internal conflicts, and internal difficulties again it is legitimate to them. They must resolve their problems. They can not expect Zanu PF to go and intervene,” said Mnangagwa.

Woman sentenced to life imprisonment for burning her boyfriend to death in his car

A South African woman, Nonjabulo Nokukhanya Nkosiwho, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her boyfriend, Dumisani Qwabe, 47, a ward councilor candidate.

Nkosiwho, 37, had planned to hire a hitman to kill her boyfriend but failed and instead carried out the murder on her own.

She was sentenced for murder in the Pietermaritzburg High Court..

The National Prosecuting Authority in KZN said Nkosi was in a romantic relationship with Qwabe and at some point she decided to kill him.

“She approached Xolani Skhumbuzo Mtambo to arrange for a hitman to kill him, but the plan fell through,” said NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

She said Nkosi then obtained a firearm and petrol to carry out the killing by herself.

“On October 25, 2021, Nkosi met Mtambo at a marketplace, where he loaded the firearm for her, and showed her how to use it. Thereafter, Qwabe received a call from Nkosi and left his house,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

“Later that night, his motor vehicle was found engulfed in flames on the road between Nongoma and Pongola, with his burnt remains inside.”

The NPA said Nkosi did not report to work the next day due to first and second-degree burns she sustained to her left cheek and left hand.

“Following Qwabe’s death, his family members discovered that his cellphone and bank card were still active. Police investigations revealed that Nkosi was using Qwabe’s bank card and banking app to make cash withdrawals and pay for purchases,”Ramkisson-Kara said.

“She was subsequently arrested, and an analysis of her cellphone records led to Mtambo’s arrest, three months later.

In court the state handed in evidence of WhatsApp messages between both the accused before and after Qwabe’s murder, the NPA said.

“Footage from CCTV cameras at the ATM where Nkosi used Qwabe’s bank card, was also submitted as evidence.”

In aggravation of sentencing, victim impact statement handed to court described Qwabe as a kind and supportive person who had a vested interest in the community.

The family said they had difficulty coming to terms with his death, especially since he was killed in such a gruesome manner.”

In addition to life, Nkosi was sentenced to five years imprisonment for theft.

Mtambo was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder.

“In sentencing him, the court considered the fact that he was a first offender and that he was not present on the scene when the offence was committed as substantial and compelling reasons to deviate from the minimum sentence of life imprisonment,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

Father who murdered his 4-week-old son by crushing his ribs and breaking his neck sentenced to life imprisonment

0

A father whose one-month-old son died after suffering a “snapped neck” has been sentenced to life in prison for the child’s murder.

Ollie Davis was found lifeless in his crib in the bedroom he shared with his parents in Leicester in October 2017 with more than 20 broken ribs and fractures to his skull, collar bone, both arms and the joints of all his limbs.

Michael Davis, 29, was found guilty of his murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm last month, while the baby’s mother Kayleigh Driver, 31, was convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child and causing or allowing serious physical injury.

The pair were found guilty after a two-month trial which heard Ollie’s “neck was snapped between four and eight days prior to his death”.

Davis was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years today, April 10.

The judge said the murder had involved a “devastating” fatal spinal injury and other injuries usually seen after a “high-energy car crash”.

Mr Justice Cotter said he was sure Davis had inflicted all of the injuries during four overnight “episodes” of violence and had shown “callous indifference” to Ollie’s suffering by not seeking medical help.

“I have no doubt that during the night you became frustrated and angry and this led to terrible violence,” the judge told him.

“You assaulted him on multiple occasions. The attacks in their various forms were also brutal – in particular the fatal neck injury.”

Driver, who was cleared by a jury of murder and causing grievous bodily harm, was jailed for seven years as she appeared for sentence on a mobility scooter due to a chronic neurological condition.

The judge told her: “You must have heard Ollie’s cries after he was assaulted, as you were together in the bedroom. This must have woken you up.”

Prosecutor John Hankin KC told the jury: “Ollie could not have caused the injuries to himself – he was a five-week-old pre-mobile baby.

“A broken neck was not the only injury Ollie sustained. Medical investigation revealed Ollie had sustained a total of 37 fractures.

“They included fractures to the skull, his collar bone, both arms between the shoulder and the elbow, 23 rib fractures and fractures to the joints of all four limbs.

“He also suffered brain injuries, bleeding over the surface of the brain.”

Mr Hankin said Ollie was subjected to serious physical abuse “most likely to have taken place during the last 10 days of his life”.

Davis couldn’t explain Ollie’s injuries, telling police he was “quite shocked” and that his son had “seemed fine” when he fell asleep.

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has opened up on his struggles after being declared bankrupt last year

Former Manchester United defender, Wes Brown has opened up on his struggles after being declared bankrupt last year.

Brown made 362 appearances for United and earned £50,000-a-week as a player at one stage, but HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition against him last February, and the petition was rubber-stamped at the High Court two months later.

The five-time Premier League winner, who also won the Champions League twice and was capped 23 times by England, split from his wife Leanne in 2022.

Brown, 44, has now opened up how things went wrong for him, admitting he did not have the ‘right people’ to guide him during his younger years.

‘I think the main thing is when you are making a lot of money, you need the right people, don’t you? And I would say that’s one of the things I didn’t have,’ he said on the Ben Heath Podcast.

‘It was a little bit different. It wasn’t lots of people you go and speak to and you maybe meet people and do this do that. I wasn’t interested in any of that. You said yes and got on with it.

‘It’s a long story and I won’t go into the detail, but it’s stuff that happened a long time ago with certain investments and getting into stuff that as a young kid, a lot of people go into, [but] don’t really understand it.

‘It’s what a lot of people are doing and then it came to a head last year, and that’s how it went.

‘It’s happened and I’m just getting on with it but it’s one of those things where you hope people, especially this generation, don’t get involved in.’

Brown revealed his current predicament is still ‘ongoing’ and was asked whether anyone had ever reached out to him to ask for advice on how to avoid going down the same path.

He replied: ‘No. I’ve had a lot of players that have said “I’m in the same thing”.

‘I won’t say names and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the same outcome will happen to them.

‘But it’s stuff like when you’re kids you don’t really understand it anyway, you just assume a lot of people are doing it and it’s fine. That’s not your life, you’re just playing football.

‘A lot of people have been able to get themselves out of it or they’re still involved in sorting it out or whatever, but I just couldn’t. There’s not much I could do.’

Israel threatens to immediately attack Iran if it launches an attack

0

Israel’s foreign minister Yisrael Katz has said that if Iran attacks Israel from its land, Israel will attack Iran back.

He made these comments when things were very tense between the two countries because some Iranian generals were killed in a blast at the Iranian consulate in Syria.

“Iran attacks, Israel will attack back,” said Israel Katz in a post on X in Farsi and Hebrew.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei repeated a pledge to take revenge on Israel for the attack on its consulate in Damascus.

Tehran blames Israel for the attack that destroyed the building and killed 12 people. Israel has not admitted that it was involved, but it is preparing for a possible attack from Iran in return. This would be a big increase in their ongoing secret conflict.

The attack ended Gen’s life. Mohammad Reza Zahedi was an important leader in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. He was in charge of the Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016. 11 people died, including 6 guards, 4 Syrians, and 1 member of Hezbollah.

Israel has been attacking many places in Syria that are connected to Iran. They are doing this to stop weapons and other joint efforts with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. The Israeli army doesn’t usually talk about these attacks. For the past six months, there has been almost daily fighting between Israel and Hezbollah along the border between Israel and Lebanon. This started when the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza began.

Hamas leaders in Gaza started the war by attacking southern Israel on Oct 7. They are also supported by Iran. Tehran supports a group of Iraqi militias that are aiming to harm the U. SMilitary bases and locations in Syria and Iraq belonging to The Islamic Resistance of Iraq.

Khamenei said at a prayer ceremony for the end of Ramadan that the strike on its consular was like an attack on Iran’s land.

“When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our land,” Khamenei said on Iranian state TV. “The bad government will be punished, and it must be punished. ”

Katz and the Ayatollah did not explain how they would strike back.

Khamenei criticized the US and Britain for helping Israel in the war against Hamas in Gaza.

“They were expected to help Israel in this disaster. ” They didn’tHe said the Western governments did not do their jobs.

Iran doesn’t accept Israel.

Air Force Secretary to be piloted by AI-operated fighter plane in test of military’s future

The Air Force is planning to use over 1,000 drones in future air warfare. Its leader will also fly in a plane operated by artificial intelligence.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said he will fly in one of the converted F-16s to see how well the AI-controlled plane works.

“I will have a pilot with me who will be watching while the autonomous technology works,” Kendall told the Senate Appropriations Committee defense panel members. “Hopefully, neither of us will have to fly the airplane. ”

The use of drones in war has grown fast, and now they are one of the main weapons used in combat. Drones are a big problem every day in Ukraine and in the Middle East. In Ukraine, regular people are being attacked by Russian drones, but they are also making drones to film Russian locations. In the Middle East, groups supported by Iran have been using advanced drones in the air, sea, and underwater to attack US bases and ships in the Red Sea.

The Air Force started making plans for its team of fighting planes, called CCAs, a few years ago. They imagine a situation where one pilot can control many AI-powered drones, also known as “loyal wingmen. ”

The company won’t say what the drones will look like, whether they will be big or small. Kendall wants to watch a test flight of a converted F-16 so he can see the technology for future planes.

The fleet is being made to be ready for future fights, including a possible war with China. China has improved its ability to stop other countries from getting close to its territory by using better weapons like air defense systems. This makes it dangerous for other countries to send people too close to China. Drone planes could help the military get past enemy defenses and support missions like watching and blocking signals in the future.

The Air Force asked for $559 million in the 2025 budget to keep working on the future CCA air system.

“The aircraft was originally supposed to be used for air defense, but it has the capability to do other tasks,” Kendall said.

The drone fleet is also expected to cost less than making new manned jets, Kendall said. The goal is to make each one cost about $20 million, which is much less than what an F-35 fighter costs now.

Israel struck and killed three of my sons – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh

0

Three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh have been killed in an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday according to their father. Haniyeh blamed Israel for acting out of revenge and killing.

Haniyeh said his sons died in an interview on Al Jazeera. He said they died trying to free Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli army did not respond right away.

Biden has strongly supported Israel in its fight against Hamas. But recently, he has been less patient with Netanyahu and his government has been tougher on Israel. This has caused tension between the two countries and has made Israel more isolated on the world stage.

The biggest argument is about Israel’s plan to attack the southern Gaza city of Rafah. An Israeli attack last week made the separation even worse. The attack killed seven workers with the World Central Kitchen charity, most of them were from other countries. Israel said they did not mean to cause the deaths, but Biden was very angry about it.

In a recent interview, Biden talked about the differences between the US and Israel when it comes to giving help to people in Gaza. Gaza is facing a shortage of food because of the war, and more than a million people are in danger of going hungry.

“He is making a mistake. ” Biden said that he doesn’t like how Netanyahu is doing things. He thinks Netanyahu is more focused on staying in power than what’s best for Israel.

“He said in the phone interview that the criminal is driven by a desire for revenge and murder and doesn’t care about following rules or laws. ”

Ismail Haniyeh lives in Qatar, where Al Jazeera is located.

He said that the killings would not make Hamas change their mind. The two groups have been working on stopping fighting for several months.

“The enemy thinks that if they attack the families of our leaders, they will give in to what they want,” he said. “Anyone who thinks that attacking my sons will make Hamas change its mind is crazy. ”

Hamas’ TV station, Al-Aqsa, reported that Hazem, Ameer, and Mohammed Haniyeh, along with other family members, were killed in a strike close to the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City. Ismail Haniyeh comes from Shati.

The brothers and their family were in one car when an Israeli drone attacked them, according to Al-Aqsa TV. Six people died, including Hazem Haniyeh’s daughter, and Ameer’s son and daughter.

The strike happens while people from other countries are trying to help make a new agreement to stop the fighting. We didn’t know right away how the strike would affect the negotiations.

Before, Benny Gantz, an Israeli war minister, said that Hamas has lost in a fight, but he also said that Israel will keep fighting against them for many years.

“From a military standpoint, Hamas has lost. ” “Israel’s fighters have been killed or are in hiding, and their abilities are weakened,” Gantz said in a statement to the media in Sderot.

However, he said that it will take a while to fight against Hamas. Middle school boys will continue to have fights in Gaza Strip.

Gantz said that the Israeli government is committed to entering Rafah, a city in the southern part of the Gaza Strip where many people are seeking shelter. “Wherever terrorists are, the IDF will go there,” he said.

The attack happened while people in Gaza were celebrating the end of Ramadan and visiting the graves of family members who had died in the war. In the Jabaliya refugee camp near Gaza City, people were sitting quietly next to graves that were surrounded by buildings that were destroyed by Israel’s attack after Hamas’s deadly attack in October. Rewrite this text in an easy way:

“The United States is doing its own thing. ” President Joe Biden said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a mistake in handling the war in Gaza. He wants the government to give a lot of aid to the troubled area. This is putting more pressure on Israel to stop fighting and causing a bigger disagreement between the two countries.

Biden strongly supports Israel’s battle against Hamas. In the past few weeks, the president has become less patient with Netanyahu. His administration is being stricter with Israel, causing tension in their long-standing alliance and making Israel more isolated internationally because of the war.

The biggest argument is about Israel’s plan to attack the city of Rafah in Gaza. The disagreement got even worse when Israel bombed a group giving aid, killing seven workers from a charity called World Central Kitchen. Most of them were from other countries. Israel said they did not mean to cause the deaths, but Biden was very angry about it.

Biden recently said in an interview that Israel and the US disagree on giving aid to people in Gaza. The war there has led to a risk of famine for over a million people.

“He is making a mistake. ” “I don’t like the way he’s doing things,” Biden told the Spanish TV station Univision. He was asked if Netanyahu was more focused on keeping his job than on what’s best for Israel.

Israel stopped giving aid to Gaza when the war started, but because the US asked them to, they have slowly started to allow more trucks to bring aid into the area. However, aid organizations say that necessary supplies are not getting to people in need fast enough. They are pointing the finger at Israeli restrictions and pointing out that many trucks are stuck waiting to enter Gaza. Countries have tried other ways to give aid that are not as good, like dropping supplies from airplanes or delivering them by boat.

Israel has opened more ways for trucks to go into northern Gaza, which was hit hard in the war. Israel thinks that aid groups take too long to give help to people in Gaza after they bring it there.

The delivery of aid is made difficult by problems with organization and safety, especially because of the recent WCK strike.

Israel and Hamas are talking to try to make a deal to stop fighting. Hamas wants Israel to release some people they took captive on Oct 7. However, the two sides still disagree on important issues, such as whether Palestinians should be allowed to return to northern Gaza. Netanyahu’s group of top officials met on Tuesday night to talk about the hostage negotiations, but it seems like they didn’t decide anything.

Netanyahu promised to win completely by destroying Hamas’ military and government so that the Oct 7 attacks don’t happen again and the hostages can come back. He says that to win, they need to attack Rafah, which Israel says is the last big place controlled by Hamas. But more than half of the 2. 3 million people in Gaza are hiding there.

Six months after the war started, Israel is becoming more and more alone. Even its closest friends are speaking out about being unhappy with how the war is going. Turkey, a country Israel has traded with for a long time, is also taking actions that could hurt Israel’s economy to show how upset they are.

Netanyahu is being accused of doing bad things and now people want him to say what he thinks about Gaza after the war. Critics say that he is taking a long time to make a decision because he doesn’t want to upset his very patriotic partners in the government who want to move people back to the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Netanyahu has already said he is against this idea.

Netanyahu’s partners in government also don’t want to give in to Hamas and have said they might leave the government. If they do, the ruling group would fall apart and new elections would need to happen.

Israel started the war because Hamas attacked them from another country. The militants killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took about 250 people as hostages, according to Israel.

Over 33,400 Palestinians have been killed in the on-going fighting. Gaza’s Health Ministry doesn’t separate civilians and soldiers in their count, but they claim that most of the people who died were women and children. Israel claims to have killed about 12,000 fighters, but has not shown any proof.

The war has caused a big disaster for people who need help. Most of the people in the area had to leave their homes because of the fighting, and many parts of Gaza are now too damaged to live in.

Appeals Court denies Trump’s bid to postpone his criminal trial for hush money until April 15

0

A judge in New York refused to delay Donald Trump’s trial for paying hush money. Trump wanted to delay the trial because he is fighting a rule that stops him from talking about the case. But the judge quickly said no.

Judge Cynthia Kern’s decision was the second time in two days that the state’s appeals court said no to delaying the trial, which is supposed to start next week. This makes it even harder for Trump’s legal team to postpone the trial like they wanted to.

Trump’s lawyers asked to postpone the trial so that a larger group of judges could decide whether he should be allowed to talk publicly about the people involved in the hush-money case.

They say that the rule to not speak publicly is against the law and stops the likely Republican nominee from talking to the public while he is running for president and dealing with criminal charges.

“The damage caused by this gag order to the First Amendment cannot be fixed,” said Trump’s lawyer, Emil Bove, during a quick hearing on Tuesday at the state’s appeals court.

Bove said Trump should be allowed to speak freely, even though his former lawyer Michael Cohen and porn actor Stormy Daniels often criticize him. Both of them are important witnesses for the prosecution.

Bove said the order unfairly limits Trump’s ability to speak out about the case and share his views with the public. It also restricts the public’s right to hear from him.

Steven Wu, who is the head of appeals at the Manhattan district attorney’s office, argued that it is important to protect the fairness of the trial for the public.

“What we are discussing is that the defendant has a history of making hurtful comments about people involved in the case,” Wu said. This is not a discussion about politics. These are mean and hurtful words.

Wu said that some witnesses are afraid to testify because they don’t want their names in the news. Wu didn’t say who they are, but he mentioned that they are people who can talk about how records are kept.

The gag order allows Trump to talk about many different topics. He can also comment on Judge Juan M. Merchan and District Attorney Alvin Bragg can make political arguments when he wants to. Trump has criticized Bragg, who is a Democrat, and the judge many times.

If no more legal action happens, the process of choosing jurors will start on April 15th.

Last month, Merchan was told by prosecutors to not talk about a certain topic. Then, last week, he made the rule even stricter by saying no one can talk about his family. This happened because Trump said bad things on social media about the judge’s daughter, who works for the Democratic party, and said things that weren’t true.

On Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers had to go to court for the second day in a row. Judge Lizbeth González said no to their request to wait for the trial to be postponed while Trump tries to move his case out of Manhattan, where there are many Democratic people.

Trump’s lawyers made their request to limit speech look like a case against Merchan. In New York, people can take judges to court under Article 78 to question some of their decisions.

Before, Trump has tried this tactic when he wanted to delay his New York civil fraud trial but it didn’t work. He also did it when the judge told people involved in the trial not to talk about court workers. That request came after Trump criticized the judge’s main law assistant on social media.

One judge lifted the rule that stopped people from talking about the trial, but another group of judges put the rule back two weeks later.

Trump’s hush-money criminal case is about claims that he changed his company’s records to hide the payments he made to Cohen. Cohen helped Trump keep bad news out of the media during his 2016 campaign. Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about her affair with Trump.

Last year, Trump said he didn’t do the 34 crimes of lying about business records. He said he did not have sex with Daniels. His lawyers say that the money given to Cohen was used for legal expenses and was completely legal.

Trump has tried many times to delay the trial.

Last week, Merchan kept saying no to requests to delay the trial, and Trump asked the judge to leave the case again. The judge said no to a request that was the same in August.

Trump’s lawyers say the judge is not fair to him and has a problem because his daughter works for a company that helps Democrats, including President Joe Biden. Trump’s lawyers complained that the new gag order was protecting the Merchans from valid public criticism.

Merchan had been avoiding putting a restriction on talking. At Trump’s court appearance in April 2023, he warned Trump not to say things that could make people violent or unsafe, but didn’t completely silence him. At the next meeting, Merchan mentioned that Trump is a former president and current candidate. He said he is making extra effort to give Trump every chance to talk about his campaign.

Merchan started to worry more and more about Trump’s words causing problems during the important trial as it got closer. He said he had to make sure the trial was fair and honest, so he told everyone to stop talking about it. This was more important than people’s right to free speech.

Trump responded on social media that he thought the gag order was illegal and against American laws. He said Merchan was trying to stop him from speaking out against Democratic rivals using the law enforcement system for their own purposes.

Trump said something about Merchan without proof. He suggested that Merchan made decisions based on his daughter’s job and claimed that Merchan posted a photo of Trump behind bars on social media. But court officials said that the claim was not true.

After the outburst, Merchan made the gag order bigger on April 1. Trump can’t talk about the judge’s family or Bragg’s family.

“Trump said, ‘Why can they talk about me but I can’t talk about them. ‘ on his Truth Social platform. “

Videos show Chicago police firing 100 rounds in 41 seconds during tragic traffic stop

0

Undercover Chicago police officers in regular clothes shot their guns almost 100 times in 41 seconds during a traffic stop. One man died and one officer got hurt. The video was released by a group that makes sure the police are doing their job right.

Five police officers in a special unit in a plain car stopped a SUV driven by Dexter Reed last month because they said he was not wearing a seatbelt. A video of a 26-year-old Black man shows him lowering a car window for a short time and then raising it again. He refused to get out of the car even when more officers arrived, shouted at him, and pointed their weapons at him.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said they have early evidence that shows Reed shot first and hurt a police officer in Humboldt Park, on the West Side of the city. Four police officers shot back, firing 96 bullets.

The sounds of gunshots didn’t stop even after Reed got out of his car and fell to the ground. COPA shared videos from the police officers’ body cameras, 911 calls, and police reports.

The new videos show more information than what the police first showed last month.

Police Chief Larry Snelling said before that the shooting on March 21 started with a traffic stop and he called it a “shooting back and forth. ”

Relatives are asking questions about the police’s explanation of the shooting, trying to understand why Reed was stopped by the police. Andrew Stroth, a lawyer for the family, said Reed’s mother, sister, uncle, and father watched the video on Tuesday and were very upset. He said they remember the young man as a good basketball player in high school who wanted to be a sports broadcaster.

“I can’t describe how much my family is hurting. I hope that someone out there understands that my brother was loved by his family and had people who cared about him,” said Reed’s sister, Porscha Banks, to reporters. “He was someone very special. ”

Stroth said the police stop was against the law because the officers were not wearing uniforms and didn’t say they were police. He said the family wants the investigation to be done quickly and for the department to follow the court’s plan for change better.

“He won’t come back, but we should try to prevent this from happening to another family,” he said.

On Tuesday, the police spokesperson Thomas Ahern said that the department is working together with the investigation.

“We can’t make a decision about the shooting until we know all the facts and finish the investigation,” he said.

The videos show different views, including the one from the officer who got shot. But it’s not easy to see Reed shooting in the video. A gun was found in the car later.

The police team arrives at the scene and many officers shout at Reed to roll down the window and open the door using bad words.

Then there were loud sounds of gunfire. A man called 911 and said the shooting sounded like the Vietnam War.

Reed gets out of the car and falls to the ground, ending up lying on his stomach with his head by the back passenger wheel and only wearing one shoe. Blood is following into a nearby drain. Video of the car shows a lot of holes from bullets. The other shoe is next to the driver’s door.

The officers shout at Reed to stay still and lift up his hands. They were looking for a gun but couldn’t find one. Reed’s hands were bloody and falling down. They put handcuffs on him while he lies on his stomach and doesn’t move.

The officer says he doesn’t know where the gun is. Later, they use a flashlight to look inside the car and find the weapon on the passenger seat.

“He began to shoot at us,” another officer said.

Later, more police and an ambulance come to the place.

“One officer kept saying that we all were shooting. ”

Mayor Brandon Johnson promised to thoroughly investigate the situation and said that the release of information on Tuesday was a step towards being more open and honest.

“He said at a news conference with COPA and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office that trying to keep information secret or slow it down is old-fashioned and wrong. ” “As a mayor and a father, I am very upset to see another young Black man lose his life during a police interaction. Especially because I am raising a family, including two Black boys in the West Side of Chicago. ”

He said the city doesn’t support shootings against police officers and mentioned that the officer, who is also Black, hurt his wrist but it could have been much worse. If the bullet had gone a little bit in a different direction, Johnson said he would be here “talking about the death of another Black man. ”

The officers were given a 30-day break from their regular duties while COPA and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office investigate them.

Kim Foxx, a legal official, said her office will decide if the police used force for a good reason or if they should be charged with a crime.

“I promise we will keep working hard to find justice, using facts, evidence, and the law as our guide,” she said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said that Reed was killed on purpose and that he died from being shot multiple times.

COPA was made in 2016 because the city had to show a video of a police officer shooting a 17-year-old boy. The video showed that what the officers said happened was not true. It looks into cases where police have shot someone.

The police department has to follow certain rules given by the US Justice Department because they found that the police have been treating people of different races unfairly and using too much force, after McDonald died.

The team that checks if the department is following the rules has found that it often doesn’t finish tasks on time. They asked the new superintendent to solve the problems that have been causing slow progress.

Florida woman who sold Biden’s daughter’s diary received one-month jail sentence

0

A mother in Florida was given a one-month jail sentence and three months of being confined at home for stealing and selling the diary of President Joe Biden’s daughter to a conservative group.

Aimee Harris got a punishment in court in Manhattan by Judge Laura Taylor Swain. She called the actions of the woman from Palm Beach, Florida, “awful”.

Harris said she was part of a plan and admitted to getting $20,000 out of $40,000 paid by Project Veritas for buying things that belong to Ashley Biden, the president’s daughter.

Project Veritas started in 2010 and says it’s a news group. It is most famous for using hidden cameras to expose and embarrass news outlets, labor unions, and Democratic politicians.

Harris cried and said sorry for letting Ashley Biden’s personal writings be sold. She found Ashley’s diary and other things at a friend’s house in Delray Beach, Florida in 2020. Ashley thought her things were safe there when she stayed for a little while in 2020.

Harris said she doesn’t think she’s better than the law. The prosecutor wants her to go to prison because she missed many court dates. She says she couldn’t go because she was busy taking care of her 8 and 6 year old kids.

“I went through really bad abuse at home for a long time, and I also had bad experiences with sexual trauma,” she told the judge.

With a lawyer representing Ashley Biden in the courtroom, Harris said sorry to the president’s daughter for sharing details about her childhood and life.

When the judge decided the punishment, he said that Harris and another person, Robert Kurlander, from nearby Jupiter, Florida, tried to sell Ashley Biden’s things to Donald Trump’s campaign but it didn’t work.

The judge said that Harris wanted to influence the country’s politics because he was greedy.

Kurlander and Harris admitted to working together to move stolen items to different states. Kurlander hasn’t been punished yet.

Lawyer Anthony Cecutti asked for no jail time for his client because of her tough life and taking care of her kids while dealing with abuse and violence.

“She feels bad and judged for what she did,” he said.

Assistant US Attorney Robert Sobelman wanted Harris to go to prison because he has repeatedly shown a lack of respect for the law and the justice system.

“Ms” “Sobelman said that Harris is not the person who was harmed in this situation. ” MsGreta is the teacher for our class. Biden is the one who has been hurt in this situation.

He said that in the summer of 2020, Harris took Ashley Biden’s diary, digital storage card, books, clothes, suitcase, and anything else she could find, so she could sell it and make a lot of money.

She tried to hurt Ms. Biden’s dad, he said.

Harris was told to go to prison in July. When she left the courthouse, she didn’t want to talk.

Ashley Biden’s lawyer didn’t want to talk about it, but he did write a letter to the judge for her the day before, but it wasn’t added to the court records right away.

Hichilema if not careful, WILL ROT IN JAIL…you can’t sell a silver spoon, a national asset in the most unclear circumstances – Changala

Mr Hakainde Hichilema if not careful, WILL ROT IN JAIL …you can’t sell a silver spoon, a national asset in the most unclear circumstances – Changala

By Thomas Ngala(The Mast)

MR Hakainde Hichilema if he is not careful he will rot in jail, warns Brebner Changala as he questions the President’s remarks that Mopani was owned by creditors.

On Friday, gracing the commissioning of the Lusaka International Arbitration Centre at Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) House in Lusaka, President Hichilema said Mopani belonged to creditors, “that is the truth.”

“When I hear my critics in the political arena commenting about the Mopani transaction and demeaning the value of that transaction you simply feel sorry for people, genuinely,” said President Hichilema while acknowledging that many citizens saw Mopani as a 100 per cent company owned by government. “It is not like that…Either out of ignorance or just spite. Mopani belonged to creditors. One creditor alone Glencore was owed $1.5 billion with interest $1.72 billion. We had to negotiate the Glencore debt alone, from $1.7 to $500 million. Otherwise, we would not consummate the Mopani transaction.”

But Changala, a good governance activist, told The Mast that “you cannot sell a silver spoon, a national asset” in the most unclear circumstances.

He said the sale of Mopani needed a ministerial statement on the floor of the House before parliament adjourned.

“Either the Minister of Finance should have made a statement that he had received some money in the treasury. There should have been a statement from the Minister of Justice. There should have been a coherent statement from the Minister of Mines,” he said.

Changala said President Hichilema has opened a Pandora’s box.

“…and that Pandora’s box is dirty. It’s a can of worms. It clearly shows that Zambia is in the wrong hands,” he said.

He argued that President Hichilema does not mean well for the country.

“They tell us that Mopani was not sold. If it was not sold, what happened? Can we have a clear statement from the minister and indeed from the Head of State. Short of that, Zambians must wake up. We are back to the privatisation days. This country will be ripped, if it hasn’t been ripped already naked and poverty will be our signature going forward,” he said. “My line of thought is that the President must not take the people of Zambia for granted. The Mopani asset is a critical asset to the people of Zambia. It is an economic and lifeline asset that must not be short-changed through treachery, trickery, and you know banditry. The President of the Republic of Zambia moved the nation to Mopani, Mufulira on the Copperbelt to hand over 51 per cent shares to IRH, publicly. And he asked the people of Zambia to celebrate and to shame the doomsayers.”

He said the President and the Minister of Mines and Mineral Development Paul Kabuswe are not being honest.

“And for that we demand a ministerial statement on the sale of Mopani. Why do we want a ministerial statement? The President must state to this country as he has already said that the owners were the creditors. What was he doing and on whose behalf was he handing over the mine to IRH?” he asked. “Who negotiated the 51 per cent shareholding so that ZCCM-IH remains with 49? Was there any property tax paid to ZRA? But most importantly, who are these creditors who owned Mopani? Can we have a list of these creditors who owned Mopani and if Zambia didn’t own that mine, why were the ones handing over Mopani which was not their entity? How did Zambia, through ZCCM-IH get 49 per cent shareholding? How much did Zambia pay for the 49 per cent shares to the creditors? These are critical questions? Who signed the share transfer agreement? And who signed on behalf of the creditors? There are always two sides of the coin.”

He also called on the former minister of mines Richard Musukwa to clarify on the issue.

“I want to invite the last minister in the previous administration, honourable Musukwa, the one who handled the exit of Glencore from Mopani. What was the transaction and what were the exit conditions and prevailing circumstances? When they moved out, what did they ask this government to do? To take full possession at a certain cost? Which other creditors held shares other than Glencore and ZCCM-IH? So the onus is on Glencore and the previous Zambian government, what was the negotiation, what was the exit contractual agreement? Was it that Mopani became solely a property of the Republic of Zambia through ZCCM-IH? When the PF lost power, how did it change that Mopani became a property of creditors? At what stage did it become? So, I invite the former minister Musukwa and the former minister of finance Bwalya Ng’andu to shed more light on this revelation by President Hichilema, which are highly concerning and worrisome,” said Changala.

HH IS AN INCOMPETENT OPERATOR…he has never run anything of substance, charges Nawakwi

By Thomas Ngala (The Mast)

ANYTHING in Zambian hands is not good for President Hakainde Hichilema, charges FDD leader Edith Nawakwi.

“HH is an incompetent operator. He has never run anything of substance,” Nawakwi says.

She says for President Hichilema anything Zambian must be given to foreign hands.

Nawakwi told The Mast that President Hichilema has “this love for foreigners. It is an inferiority complex that most of our African leaders have”.

“It’s even better for him as he has demonstrated on Mopani that a South African politician from ANC is a better shareholder than the Zambian people. He would rather give shares in Mopani to a South African failed politician. So there is nothing you can say about Hakainde,” she said.

Nawakwi said President Hichilema has the phobia that is carried from the colonialists where people used to say inde bwana (yes boss).

She also fumed over allegations that she owed Development Bank of Zambia money.

“When it’s those European, Caucasian or Asian they think it is better than when it is pitch black… These are Mr inde bwanas. They closed DBZ, now they are scandalising us that we owe DBZ. I challenge his [Bank of Zambia governor Denny] Kalyalya to come out in the open and say how much I owe DBZ. Ma nonsense ine sinimayafuna (I don’t brook no nonsense),” she said. “And this was started by this mentally bankrupt [information minister Cornelius) Mweetwa. They are just good at creating stories. That is all.”

On the issue of Investrust Bank insolvency, Nawakwi said what is happening is a reflection of the highest levels of incompetence by President Hichilema.

“HH is an incompetent operator. He has never run anything of substance. Can you figure any company where you know this one, beyond Grant Thornton…?” she asked. “It’s not just about Investrust (Bank). It is many companies which were starting to run, which are being bankrupted like Zesco, Mpulungu Harbour … and yet Mpulungu Harbour is a gateway to 10 or so Great Lakes region countries. 16 of them and Hakainde is treating Mpulungu Harbour like it is Namwine Ranch.”

She charged that all that President Hichilema specialises in is lying.

“All he specialises in is lies. We told them that these continuous revisions of the capital requirement for banks under the so-called statutory reserve ratio, whatever the name is, is a recipe for bankruptcy. And the banks which can survive in this economy are those banks which are leveraged by the foreign banks,” said Nawakwi. “For example, the capital requirement to open a bank in this country used to be like $2 million, K10 million. Now, that K10 million is just about $400,000. That was the last national bank in our laps. The other one Atlas Mara was taken over by Access Bank, foreign operators from Nigeria. Because they only have to cash in like $400,000 and remit the reserve requirement.”

You’re ranking HH 5th best in Africa in a country where people are queuing up for mealie meal – Kafwaya

You’re ranking HH 5th best in Africa in a country where people are queuing up for mealie meal – Kafwaya

By Fanny Kalonda(The Mast)

LUNTE PF member of parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya says the debt restructuring deal will just continue to be announced by the UPND government without being actualised.

“For me until I see debt restructured I will always take UPND for what I have known them. They will keep announcing it. This debt restructuring for me is just an announcement,” he said.

And Kafwaya noted that when it comes to development in Lusaka, the only road which continues to be worked on is the one that passes near President Hakainde Hichilema’s personal residence, Community House.

Kafwaya told The Mast in an interview that he laughed off the rating of President Hichilema as the fifth best performing African leader given that people are queuing up for mealie meal.

President Hichilema was named as one of the five best performing African leaders.

An online publication, Business Day, said President Hichilema is the fifth best performing African leader.

Abdel Fattah EL-Sisi of Egypt is ranked first followed by Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania while, Paul Kagame of Rwanda is ranked third.

Wavel Ramkalawan of Seychelles is ranked fourth and President Hichilema fifth.

“I laughed off that ranking. I thought that was just propaganda. You are ranking the President of Zambia as fifth best performing President in the continent of Africa in a country where people are queuing up for mealie meal? In a country where people are buying mealie meal for a 25kg bag between K350 to K600 which was K120, just two years ago! You are ranking, you are giving him that ranking, in a country where a litre of petrol is K30 which was K17 just two years ago? You have to tell me what you are using to rank him like that,” said Kafwaya. “This is the country now where everything literally you are suffering eight hours of load shedding. You have no medicine in hospitals, you have poor quality free education. You have got all development activities lumped into this CDF. You need to give me a break. If you think about what is happening here in Lusaka, even development wise, the only road which continues to be worked on is the road that road which passes near his house. Few days ago, I passed there I found machinery still working, a road which is complete [but] machinery are still working there. You can’t think about a road which goes to Big Ben. You can’t think about roads in Chalala, elsewhere, other than that particular road? You think of roads in Meanwood, in Meanwood Mutumbi or Meanwood Ndeke. Even that small portion in Meanwood Ndeke cannot be connected from airport road to the tarmac that is in the township there to make people travel properly. For me, he is very poorly ranked.”

Mutinta Hichilema return K100,000, dissociate yourself from Investrust failures – Moyo

Mama Hichilema return K100,000, dissociate yourself from Investrust failures – Moyo

By Edwin Mbulo in Livingstone(The Mast)

MAMA Mutinta Hichilema you are a good, humble, reserved women, please return the K100,000 donation from the now closed Investrust Bank, appeals Joseph Moyo.

Recently, the Bank of Zambia announced taking possession of Investrust Bank PLC “with effect from April 2, 2024”.

“The possession of the bank has been necessitated by its insolvency. The Bank of Zambia has had numerous engagements with the shareholders to recapitalise the bank. Unfortunately, the shareholders have been unable to resolve the insolvency. Under the circumstances, the Bank of Zambia has had to exercise its authority under the law to safeguard financial stability and the interests of the public,” reads the notice in part.

The BoZ said it is also working with key stakeholders including the government on mechanisms for depositors not to lose any of their money.

“Therefore, depositors are hereby urged to remain calm as implementation of the resolution mechanisms are being worked upon. An announcement to this effect will be made as soon as the arrangements are finalised. During the possession period, the Bank of Zambia shall in accordance with the law prepare a statement of affairs of the bank and take any other action deemed necessary. The purpose of the statement of affairs is to establish the full extent of the insolvency of the bank and serve as a basis for the full resolution of the matter,” stated the BoZ.

On December 15, 2023 Investrust donated K100,000 to the first lady for her to in-turn donate to ophanages.

But Myo, who is the founder and president of The Africa Woman Foundation (TAWF), in a statement to The Mast said Mutinta should not be seen in the eyes of the worried depositors to be part of the bank’s problems but be part of the solution.

“Mama Hichilema, you are a good woman. A humble and reserved woman who is not involved in issues of politics. We at TAWF don’t want a spatter of blood to reach you because this bank closure does not look good in the eyes of the depositors. According to the Bank of Zambia one of the reasons the bank went under is because they could not meet their debts, meaning they had no capacity to donate K100,000,” he said. “If they could not meet their debt, then why make such a donation? So please Mama Hichilema it is morally right that you return the money through BoZ because we think the donation was being made in bad faith because they knew that they were struggling so why make the donation?”

Moyo said by returning the donated money the first lady will be disssociated from the failures of the bank.

He said in South Africa a bank known as VBS went under after giving a lot of donations to ANC and its leaders, and now the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is demanding that the money be returned.

DEC SUMMONS KAMANGA, 3 OTHERS OVER AFCON EXPENDITURE

DEC SUMMONS KAMANGA, 3 OTHERS OVER AFCON EXPENDITURE

By Darious Kapembwa

HOURS after the Copper Queens sealed qualification to Paris Olympics, the government through the Drug Enforcement Commission Anti-Money Laundering Unit, has summoned FAZ president Andrew Kamanga and three others for questioning over two officials that were part of the advance party at the last AfCON in Ivory Coast.

This is despite FAZ asking government to deduct the money paid to the duo from the over K17.5 million that government owes the association in unrefunded expenses.

During the AfCON, Young Lusaka Dynamos executive member Madalitso Kamanga and his National Assembly counterpart Jairos Siame were part of the entourage in the advance party where they ran extra errands for the national soccer team which was housed in a secluded place in San Pedro.

They were also paid together with the government entourage that they were running errands with as has always been the case during big tournaments.

But the ministry of sport changed upon return from the tournament where Zambia was ejected in the first round and wrote a demand letter to FAZ through permanent secretary Kangwa Chileshe that FAZ return all the money spent on the two as they were not employees of FAZ.

“We have noted your position on the advance party that travelled to Ivory Coast on behalf of the Football Association and we wish to respond as follows: The two individuals Mr Madalitso Kamanga and Mr Jairos Siame who travelled to Ivory Coast were appointed to represent the Association due to their experience and specialisation just like we have done previously with all other support staff attached to the national teams such as team managers, equipment managers, media personnel and other personnel who are employees but are paid by the ministry. The duo were therefore appointed to represent the association as we did not have sufficient experienced manpower from the secretariat to undertake the tasks,’’ FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga responded. ‘’The ministry has always paid for non-FAZ employees who have represented the Association in different functions. Should the ministry still demand for a refund from the Association, FAZ proposes that the claimed amount of K341, 902.00 and K99, 980.00 be offset against an outstanding amount of over K17, 500,000 owed to the Football Association by the ministry. We look forward to an amicable solution of this matter and the settlement of the outstanding.”

After that, minister of sport Elvis Nkandu during a meeting on April 25, said all matters before the DEC related to the issue be abandoned and that they would be dealt with administratively by his office.

But the DEC has gone ahead to issue callouts to the FAZ president, FAZ general secretary and the two FAZ members in question to appear before it on Wednesday.

FAZ has since notified world governing body FIFA on the development.

The ministry of sport has on numerous occasions asked FAZ to use its resources for assignments involving the senior men’s national team and the Copper Queens when government had come short with a promise to reimburse, but had not done so, leading to the figures accumulating.

First Quarter,2024 Economic Performance Analysis

By Mwansa Chalwe Snr
This review of the performance of the Zambian economy for the first quarter of 2024, is carried out from the four perspectives of the main players in the economy – the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Government, Zambian Households and the Private Sector. This approach is meant to make it easy for non-technical ordinary citizens to understand. The analysis is also evidence based, and covers both the quantitative and qualitative angles.

At the time of publication, we did not have the latest IMF assessment of the Zambian economy, and so it was not possible to present their latest performance review of the economy. The last IMF review of the economy was in November, 2023, and their next review is in April,2024.

GOVERNMENT PERSPECTIVE
The quantitative analysis of the Zambian government’s performance is based on two major components: Bank of Zambia data and the Treasury data. At the time of carrying out this analysis, the treasury numbers relating to the budget performance regarding government revenue, expenditure and other metrics, for the first quarter, were not available, and therefore, no analysis has been done from that angle.

However, according to the information available from the Bank of Zambia, the government performed very poorly during the first quarter. The cost of money was high, there was a critical shortage of liquidity in the economy, inflation was high and increasing, the kwacha exchange rate was high and generally unstable. The evidence of this, is reflected in the various Bank of Zambia statistics.

Interest rates as represented by the Monetary Policy Rate went up from 11% to 12.5%, inflation increased from13.1% to 13.70%, Statutory Reserve Ratio increased from 14.5% to 26.5%, the Kwacha exchange rate was high and ranged from K25 and K27, and foreign exchange reserves at the beginning of January,2024 were at a low $3.3 Billion which is equivalent to 3.7months of import cover. And the Central Bank Governor was open about the most important metric in the Zambian economy, which drives most other economic variables.
“ What we are saying is that the Kwacha has been under severe pressure. There has been excess demand for foreign exchange in our market. We recognize that we do not have sufficient and will not have sufficient foreign exchange to defend the currency”, Dr. Denny Kalyalya said.

It should be noted that when assessing the performance of the economy from the government’s perceptive, the analysis is incomplete, if one only uses quantitative metrics only, and ignores the non-financial and qualitive factors.

The Zambian government did perform fairly well based on non-financial measures. They were able to secure a deal with International Resources Holding (IRH), in which IRH committed to invest a total of US $1.1 billion into Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) as a Strategic Equity Partner. The potential upstream benefits of the deal include job creation, foreign exchange earnings, tax income, dividends and corporate social responsibility activities.

The other qualitative achievement by the government in the first quarter was in regard to the debt restructuring deal. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Official Creditor Committee (OCC) was finally signed by all of them including China and India. The government also concluded a deal with Bondholders.

The potential benefits of the debt restructuring deal include: more funds available for social sectors, normalization of Zambia’s credit rating, improvement in market sentiment by both local and foreign investors, reduction in pressure for government to borrow from the domestic market thus lower interest rates, increased access to grants and concessional borrowing

HOUSEHOLDS PERCEPTION OF THE ECONOMY
The majority of ordinary Zambians’ current perception of the economy is that it is not working for them. Zambian households argue that the cost of living is high. They have no money in their pockets. They justify this claim by pointing to the high prices of mealie meal, fuel, electricity, interest rates, transport, and the high exchange rate.
These claims by citizens seem to be supported by empirical evidence from economic statistical surveys done by various credible organizations. The government owned Zambia Statistics Agency( Zamstats), for example, has reported inflation to have increased from 13.1% in December 2023 to 13.7% in March,2024. The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) basket of goods for December,2023 was at K9,157, it increased to K10,603 in March, 2024, which was an increase of K1,446 or 15.8%.

Zambian Citizens also feel that jobs are difficult to come by because the economy is simply not creating enough jobs due to the low economic activity. This is evidenced by Stanbic Purchasing Manager Index (PMIs) for 2024, which were below 50. And apparently, their claim is supported by the International Monetary Fund who are our current benefactors.

“The participation rate in the labour force is low and only 31 percent of the working age population is employed. There are limited employment opportunities, and even among those employed only 27 percent are in formal employment,” IMF wrote in the Zambia Country Report of July 2023, whose situation has not changed.

PRIVATE SECTOR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
The Zambian private sector performed poorly in the first quarter of 2024 for a variety of reasons. The top most constraint to Private sector growth is the high cost of doing business in Zambia. The term: “high cost of doing business,” is made up many components. These include high interest rates, high fuel prices, high cost of imported inputs, excessive taxation, high electricity tariffs, multiplicity of regulations and licences with their attendant levies. In order for government to achieve the 2024 Budget theme of: “Unlocking Economic Potential,” they should address the above constraints to the growth of the Zambian Private sector.

The quantitative evidence of the poor performance of the Private Sector in the first quarter of 2024, was captured in the monthly Stanbic Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI)Surveys. Business activity fell throughout the quarter from 49.6 in December,2023 to 48.8 in March,2024. Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions on the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show a deterioration.

Head of Sales at Stanbic Bank, Musenge Komeki, succinctly captured the status of Private Sector performance during the first quarter, in his comments on the monthly Stanbic Purchasing Manager Index ( PMI).

” The private sector health in Zambia declined. Business conditions continued to see a deterioration as a result of reduction in money supply and the depreciation of the kwacha, which have negatively impacted demand. Money shortages crippled new orders and forced cutbacks in output, employment and purchasing activity.” he said.

CONCLUSION
The Zambian economy grew by 4.6% in 2021, 4.7% in 2022 and 4.3% in 2023.It is forecast to grow by 4.7% in 2024. These rates are insufficient for the country to develop, create jobs and reduce poverty. And the IMF agrees with this assertion.

“ Despite its abundant resources, growth has been insufficient to lift its young and growing population from poverty. More than 60 percent of Zambia’s population lives below the international poverty line compared to 35% across the Sub Saharan Countries,” IMF said in a statement reviewing the Zambian economy.
In the light of the general election due in 2026, and having sorted out the debt and mining issues, as well as sufficiently marketed Zambia as a good destination for foreign direct investment (FDI),the government should laser focus on local solutions for job creation through Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in order to create millions of jobs for youths. In the 21st century, Youth determine elections in almost all countries, like they recently did in Senegal.
It has been established by studies that in order for economic growth to have any impact on poverty in developing countries like Zambia, the country’s economic activities ought to be growing at 10 % or more, as China and South East Asia countries have proved. And to achieve this growth rate, it requires innovative solutions, and the engagement of experienced local thinkers, who understand Zambia, its economic problems and its culture better.

Zim’s new currency trading stronger than the rand – for now

Zimbabwe’s new currency, the ZiG, strengthened a day after its debut, the central bank said.

The currency gained 0.2% to 13.53 per US dollar, according to data published on the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s website on Tuesday.

The rand was trading at R18.47 to the dollar by 12h20 on Tuesday.

The ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold, was introduced on Monday, Zimbabwe’s sixth attempt to resuscitate the local currency. Its predecessor, the Zimbabwe dollar, lost value every single trading day of this year before being abandoned April 5.

Zimbabwe’s sixth try

The ZiG began trading on Monday as businesses struggled with the nation’s revamped unit.

Reserve Bank Governor John Mushayavanhu set the introductory exchange rate of 13.56 per US dollar for the ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold, where it started trading.

The daily exchange rate will be determined in the interbank market from now on, Mushayavanhu said during an April 5 presentation of his first monetary policy statement.

Five previous attempts to resuscitate a local currency have failed largely because the cash-strapped government resorted to printing money to fund the budget.

While Mushayavanhu repeatedly said that won’t happen under his watch, it will be an uphill battle for the ZiG to gain acceptance among a public who’ve repeatedly seen the value of their locally priced assets wither.

The authorities didn’t help confidence in the Zimbabwe dollar by demanding that payment for services including road toll fees and passports be made using greenbacks.

Peter C. Earle, senior economist at the American Institute for Economic Research, is skeptical the ZiG will be any more of a success than its predecessors.

There has been a “fundamental unwillingness of the government to abandon inflationary finance,” he said. “Even with the ZiG’s alleged commodity backing, fiat money can be printed and undermine the stoutest sound money plans.”

Banks, retailers, telecommunications companies and other firms spent the weekend reconfiguring their systems to adopt ZiG ahead of business resuming Monday, and it’s likely to take several days before all the glitches are ironed out. Only US dollar transactions were unaffected by the currency change.

A small number of the nation’s 19 banks were processing ZiG electronic transactions by early Monday, with larger lenders expected to come on stream later in the day, according to Lawrence Nyazema, president of the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe.

“By tomorrow we should be ready for trading and other services,” he said by text message. “In practice we need demand and supply from customers to really get going.”

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, which has 56 listed companies, said all share prices, price sheets and market reports will now be denominated in the new currency.

“All the ZSE indices will be rebased to 100 basis points,” said Justin Bgoni, the chief executive officer of the bourse. “The rebasing is necessary to allow the indices to accurately reflect the performance of the market in the context of the new currency ZiG.”

Stocks on the main exchange in the capital, Harare, have risen more than three-fold since the start of the year. A stocks surge in the southern African nation is usually cause for concern, as it points to an inflation spiral and investors seeking a hedge to protect the value of their money. Annual consumer prices rose to 55.3% in March, a seven-month high.

Stock traders said trading was very limited on Monday.

“Most of the players are waiting to see how this goes and I expect activity to remain muted for the next few days,” said Shelton Sibanda, chief investment officer at Imara Asset Management.

Traders are also “keeping an eye” on how banks will settle last week’s trades, which will be impacted by the currency switch, he said.

The new currency will pose a test for listed firms when they compile their financial statements, according to Lloyd Mlotshwa, the head of research at IH Securities, a Harare-based brokerage firm.

“From an audit perspective now that there has been a conversion, they’ll need to qualify all Zimbabwe dollar financials,” he said. “The next battle will be seeing how auditors handle that.”

Even before the official scrapping of the Zimbabwe dollar as legal tender, tell-tale signs pointed to authorities quietly giving up on defending it, an unusual departure from the previous stance of fiercely backing the local unit.

The currency breached several key milestones in one of its worst starts of the year since being brought back into circulation, plunging 40% on the street market in January. It then went on to lose value every single trading day of the year.

As a result, day-to-day transactions increasingly became hard to comprehend with zeros returning to the local currency evoking bitter memories for citizens of the days of hyperinflation.

Parallel Market

When it resumed circulation in 2019, the Zimbabwe dollar began trading at an official exchange rate of 2.5 per greenback. When it finally met its demise on Friday, it was officially trading at 30,671 per US dollar, having lost 80% of its value since the start of this year.

The switch to ZiG by service providers over the weekend also had an unintended consequence: cutting off the parallel market.

Most parallel market traders rely on using electronic payments to transact. Even those that trade in Zimbabwe dollar banknotes run the risk of holding worthless bills as they will be replaced by ZiG banknotes and coins. The new currency notes will be released April 30, the central bank said.

ZimPriceCheck.Com, a popular website that monitors official and unofficial exchange rates, did not have any parallel rates displayed on its site on Monday.- businesstech.co.za

Jack Mwiimbu says UKA Alliance is operating illegally

Jack Mwiimbu’s statement on UKA

The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) is not registered at the Registrar of Societies
Lusaka, 9th April, 2024

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security would like to make it abundantly clear that the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) is neither registered as a political party nor as a Pressure Group by the Registrar of Societies.

You may wish to know that the Ministry ha received several media queries on whether UKA is legally registered by the Registrar of Societies.

The recent media queries have been necessitated by media reports
attributed to UKA that they intend to hold a political rally on 13 of April, 2024 in Kafue and that they have resolved to participate in all By-Elections.

You may wish to recall that on 13th February, 2024 Mr. to Sakwiba Sikota SC, visited the Registrar of Societies office to conduct a name search and reservation for a
socicty called United K wacha Alliance (UKA) which he intended to register as a pressure group
After he said application, the name UKA was
accordingly reserved from 13th February, 2024 to 13th March 2024 and Mr. Sikota was informed that he was free to apply for registration of the pressure group.

However, he returned on 14th February, 2024 with a verbal request to change the reservation category from a pressure group to a political party of which he was advised to apply formally.

Following the expiration of the reservation on 13thMarch, 2024, Mr. Sikota came through to request for an extension of the reservation period.

By then, the Department had migrated the application processes to the e-government platform and the applicant wvas advised accordingly to make an online application and
to date no such application has been received.

You may also wish to know that, a
male person identified as Mr. Gibson Bwalya attempted to apply for registration of a society called Unified Kwacha Alliance using another person’s National Registration
Card (NRC).

On a second attempt, Mr. Bwalya omitted
to attach an NRC

These events clearly indicate that the said United Kwacha Alliance does not exist legally and is, in as far as the Ministry is concerned, an illegal society.

Take Note that the Ministry of Home affairs and Internal Security remains committed to ensuring that the Rights and Freedoms of all individuals as provided under the Constitution are respected and protected; including the Freedom of Association

Therefore the claims by any individual or Association that the democratic space in Zambia is shrinking continue to remain unfounded and mere stunts to win public sympathy.

Miles questions UKA significance, expresses love for Lungu

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Miles Sampa has questioned the significance and the relevance of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA)

Sampa, during an appearance on Diamond TV, dismissed UKA, comparing it to a non-existent entity, stating it is like a bag.

He portrayed UKA as a gathering of disgruntled individuals who harbor animosity towards him, declaring that UKA wouldn’t even manage to register as a party let alone pose a threat to the PF.

Sampa said PF and UKA were as compatible as oil and water asserting that there’s only one president in PF and it’s certainly not anyone associated with UKA.

He also took a jab at his former boss, Edgar Lungu, suggesting that Lungu’s aspirations of reclaiming the presidency were nothing short of a comedy act and an illusion.

Sampa extended an olive branch to Lungu affectionately referring to him as his “elder brother” while stating that Lungu should step aside and offer his support to the new kid on the political block.

When pressed about the possibility of reconciliation, Sampa insisted that he held no grudges against Lungu but wouldn’t be caught dead begging for his approval.

“He played his part but I never thought he would get back to politics . I love Edgar Lungu as my brother. It hurts me to see him back to politics, he will be bruised, he’s an adult,” said Sampa.

“I love Edgar, it’s him who hates me, it’s the people with him who hate me. There’s nothing to reconcile. It’s him to support me. I’m a Christian I reconcile with everyone that wants reconciliation.”

Sampa revealed that the former president was being used by the members of UKA to gain popularity but would never make him president.

“He has been hijacked by his fellow politicians. They are using him for his money they even say that we know he will not stand on PF. They are using him for popularity,” he claimed.

Sampa warned that Lungu’s political comeback would end in tears, much to the delight of his audience.

Sampa warned that Lungu’s political comeback would end in tears much to the delight of his audience and advised him to stop masquerading as PF president.

Furthermore, he urged PF members to continue supporting their party as it was left for everyone by the late PF founding president Michael Sata who served as Zambia’s fifth republican president for three years and died during his tenure

AUTHORITIES SHUT DOWN CHILILABOMBWE RESTAURANT, ARRESTS OWNER OVER SHAWAMA HORROR

A 36 year old restaurant owner in Chililabombwe, is facing the chilling confines of police cells, where he will have ample time to reflect on the ingredients he used for his Shawarma which left a number of people hospitalised.

According to official information about 80 people are writhing in agony on clinic beds after consuming Shawarma served at Cribs Restaurant.

However, other reports indicated that the number of patients admitted for food poisoning had increased to over a hundred.

“A report was made to Chililabombwe police by sister in charge at Kakoso level one hospital where 53 patients were admitted after complaining of abnormal pain and vomiting after consuming Sharwama from the said restaurant (Cribs)” Copperbelt commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba revealed.

This led authorities to close down BRIGHT Kapasa Chileshe’s Cribs restaurant, a once-bustling eatery along Congo International Road.

Mweemba said after a police check in other health facilities it was discovered that similar complaints of patients falling ill consuming food bought at the same restaurant recorded.

Mweemba said police visited Grace Clinic and Lubengele Clinic where 10 and three patients were admitted respectively.

He added that 14 others were admitted at Konkola Mine Hospital to bring the total number of victims to 80.

Mweemba confirmed that Chileshe of Kamenza East, was detained in a local police cell.

Meanwhile the Chililabombwe Municipal Council Public Health Department added salt to the restaurant owner’s wounds as they shut down his establishment for investigations.

The Municipal Council assistant public relations manager Nambela Mwandia said the council in collaboration with the ministry of health is currently carrying out investigations on the matter

“The department together with the ministry of health is currently conducting an investigation and has collected samples for analysis” she said.

She has since urged the general public to remain calm as the council is urgently looking into the matter.

The condition of the patients has been reported to be stable.

TANZANIAN SOLDIERS KILLED IN DR CONGO MISSILE ATTACK

TANZANIAN SOLDIERS KILLED IN DR CONGO MISSILE ATTACK

A mortar attack in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed three soldiers from a southern African military force.

All of those who died were from Tanzania. Three others were hurt.

“Hostile” missile fire “fell near the camp where they were staying,” said the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) on Monday.

A source has told the BBC that the attack took place at a base for Tanzanian soldiers in Sake on Saturday.

Sadc has not confirmed these details or said who was responsible for the attack on its soldiers.

The southern African regional force was invited in by the Congolese government last year to halt worsening insecurity linked to numerous rebel groups vying for control of territory and eastern DR Congo’s rich mineral resources.

Chief among them is the M23 rebel group, which Rwanda has been widely accused of backing, including by UN experts, although Kigali has always vehemently denied this. In turn, it accuses the Congolese army of working with the FDLR, a militia linked to some of those responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, a charge rejected by Kinshasa.

After a lull in activity, the notorious M23 rebel group once again saw a resurgence in 2021 and now controls large parts of North Kivu province.

In recent months, thousands of people have fled the escalating violence in parts of eastern DR Congo. Many have taken shelter in the region’s main city of Goma, which some fear the M23 could capture, as it did in 2012.

Pressure has grown on the DR Congo government after it ordered the large UN peacekeeping mission to leave the country by the end of 2024.

A total of 2,900 Sadc soldiers were sent to North Kivu province in December to take on the M23 rebels.

In its statement on Monday, Sadc said a soldier from South Africa had also died in hospital while being treated for health problems.

In February, two South African soldiers were killed by a mortar barrage in North Kivu province. (BBC News)
