Meghan’s Netflix show delayed over LA wildfires

The Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix show has been postponed until March due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the streaming giant has announced.

The lifestyle series, which was filmed in southern California, had been due to premiere on Wednesday.

Netflix said it had offered its “full support” to Meghan’s request to delay the release.

Wildfires have raged through the California city since Tuesday, killing at least 24 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate their homes.

In a statement, Netflix described the upcoming programme as a “heartfelt tribute to the beauty of southern California”, adding that it was moving the premier of With Love, Meghan over the “ongoing devastation” caused by the fires.

“I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California,” the duchess said.

The programme filmed in the southern California town of Montecito – where Meghan and her husband Prince Harry live – will now air on 4 March, Netflix said.

The wildfires have not yet spread to the coastal enclave, which is located around 160km (99 miles) north-west of Los Angeles.

However its fire risk rating is considered high by the Montecito Fire Department.

With Love, Meghan includes eight 30-minute episodes featuring appearances from celebrities such as actress Mindy Kaling and former Suits star Abigail Spencer.

In the trailer released earlier this month, Meghan garnishes a cake with raspberries and harvests honey in California, where she lives with her husband Prince Harry and two children.

On Friday, Prince Harry and Meghan were seen hugging residents in the devastated area of Pasadena in the wake of the worst wildfires LA has ever seen.

The Game Applauded For Helping L.A. Firefighters

The Game has been praised for coming to the aid of firefighters in Los Angeles who have been working to put out the devastating wildfires across the city.

The Compton native has been on the ground supporting efforts from firefighters to contain and extinguish the blazes, which have so far claimed 24 lives and destroyed tens of thousands of acres.

In various social media posts, The Game can be seen personally delivering food, water, hot drinks, blankets and pillows to firefighters on the frontline, as well as posing for photos with the crew.

“Me & my team have been down here with the brave men & women fire fighters on the grown day in & day out assisting anyway I can to make their days a little easier,” he wrote in one Instagram post. “The hearts & level of humility in each & every soul down here is a beautiful thing to witness & be a part of.

“These fighters are coming from all over the city, state & country to help put an end to what has been a long week of catastrophic events caused by these fires. They kept thanking me for being here… and in my mind I’m like, ‘No, THANK YOU !!!’ for doing the unimaginable in a time of pure terror & despair.”

He added: “My heart goes out to each & every person directly affected & those watching from all over the world who are mentally in pieces over what has happened in my city. I am here for Los Angeles & I will always be here to do my part.

“To everyone calling me.. asking how they can help, stay locked in to my page as I’ll be posting information, links etc to get everyone in a position to assist.”

The “Hate It or Love It” hitmaker also posted a number of photos of himself with firefighters and wrote: “Waking up these past few mornings & preparing to do whatever I can for my city & to help these guys has been the best part of my week.

Norway on track to be first to go all-electric

Norway is the world leader when it comes to the take up of electric cars, which last year accounted for nine out of 10 new vehicles sold in the country. Can other nations learn from it?

For more than 75 years Oslo-based car dealership Harald A Møller has been importing Volkswagens, but early in 2024 it bid farewell to fossil fuel cars.

Now all the passenger vehicles for sale in its showroom are electric (EV).

“We think it’s wrong to advise a customer coming in here today to buy an ICE [internal combustion engine] car, because the future is electric,” says chief executive Ulf Tore Hekneby, as he walks around the cars on display. “Long-range, high-charging speed. It’s hard to go back.”

On the streets of Norway’s capital, Oslo, battery-powered cars aren’t a novelty, they’re the norm. Take a look around and you’ll soon notice that almost every other car has an “E” for “electric” on its license plate.

The Nordic nation of 5.5 million people has adopted EVs faster than any other country, and is on the cusp of becoming the first to phase out the sale of new fossil fuel cars.

Last year, the number of electric cars on Norway’s roads outnumbered those powered by petrol for the first time. When diesel vehicles are included, electric cars account for almost a third of all on Norwegian roads.

And 88.9% of new cars sold in the country last year were EVs, up from 82.4% in 2023, data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) showed.

In some months sales of fully electric cars were as high as 98%, as new petrol or diesel car purchases almost fizzled out.

By contrast, in the UK electric cars made up only 20% of new car registrations in 2024. Although this was a record high, and up from 16.5% in 2023.

In the US, the figure was just 8% last year, up from 7.6%.

Norway is undoubtedly an EV pioneer, but this electric revolution has been three decades in the making.

“It started already in the early 1990s,” says Christina Bu, the secretary general of the Norwegian EV Association, as she took me for a spin around Oslo in an electric minivan.

“Little by little taxing petrol and diesel engine cars more, so they have become a lot more expensive to purchase, whereas electric cars have been exempted from taxes.”

The support for electric vehicles was first introduced to help two Norwegian manufacturers of early EVs, the Buddy (previously Kewet) and TH!NK City. While they went out of business, the incentives for greener vehicles remained.

“It’s our goal to see that it’s always a good and viable choice, to choose zero emission,” says Norway’s Deputy Transport Minister, Cecilie Knibe Kroglund.

Even though it’s a major oil and gas producer, Norway aims for all new cars sold to be “zero emission”, starting at some point in 2025. A non-binding goal was set back in 2017, and that milestone now lies within reach.

“We are closing up on the target, and I think that we will reach that goal,” adds Kroglund. “I think we have already made the transition for passengers cars.”

Key to Norway’s success has been long-term and predictable policies, she explains.

Rather than banning combustion engine vehicles, the government has steered consumer choices. In addition to penalising fuel fossil vehicles with higher taxes and registration fees, VAT and import duties were scrapped for low-emission cars.

A string of perks, like free parking, discounted road tolls and access to bus lanes, then followed.

By comparison, the European Union plans to ban sales of new fossil-fuel cars by 2035, and the UK’s current government wants to prohibit their sale in 2030.

Petrol and diesel car sales are still permitted in Norway. But few are choosing to buy them.

For many locals, like Ståle Fyen, who bought his first EV 15 months ago, going electric made economic sense.

“With all the incentives we have in Norway, with no taxes on EVs, that was quite important to us money wise,” he says while plugging in his car at a charging station in the capital.

“In the cold, the range is maybe 20% shorter, but still, with the expansive charging network we have here in Norway, that isn’t a big issue really,” Mr Fyen adds. “You just have to change your mindset and charge when you can, not when you need to.”

Another driver, Merete Eggesbø, says that back in 2014 she was one of the first people in Norway to own a Tesla. “I really wanted a car that didn’t pollute. It gave me a better conscience driving.”

At Norwegian petrol stations many fuel pumps have been replaced by fast-charging points, and across Norway there are now more than 27,000 public chargers.

This compares with 73,699 in the UK – a country 12 times bigger in terms of population.

That means that, per 100,000 people, Norway has 447 chargers while the UK has just 89, according to a recent report.

Tesla, VW and Toyota, were Norway’s top-selling EV brands last year. Meanwhile, Chinese-owned marques – such as MG, BYD, Polestar and XPeng – now make up a combined 10% of the market, according to the Norwegian Road Federation.

Norway, unlike the US and EU, has not imposed tariffs on Chinese EV imports.

Ms Bu says there’s “not really any reason why other countries can not copy Norway”. However, she adds that it is “all about doing it in a way that can work in each country or market”.

Norwegians aren’t more environmentally-minded than people elsewhere, she reckons. “I don’t think a green mindset has much to do with it. It has to do with strong policies, and people gradually understanding that driving an electric car is possible.”

Yet Norway is also a very wealthy nation, which thanks to its huge oil and gas exports, has a sovereign wealth fund worth more than $1.7tn (£1.3tn). This means it can more easily afford big infrastructure-build projects, and absorb the loss of tax revenue from the sale of petrol and diesel cars and their fuel.

The county also has an abundance of renewable hydro electricity, which accounts for 88% of its production capacity.

“A third of cars are now electric, and it will pass 50% in a few years,” says Kjell Werner Johansen from the Norwegian Centre for Transport Research. “I think the government accepts that a few new petrol or hybrid cars will still be on the market, but I don’t know anybody who wants to buy a diesel car these days.”

Nigeria military kills 16 civilians in air strike ‘mistake’

At least 16 civilians in Nigeria’s north-western Zamfara State have been killed in a military air strike, apparently after being mistaken for criminal gangs.

Residents told local media the victims were members of local vigilante groups and civilians defending themselves from armed gangs notorious for kidnapping people for ransom.

The strikes targeted militant gangs in Zurmi and Maradun areas and the state governor, Dauda Lawal, offered his condolences to the community.

The military has acknowledged conducting air strikes, which it said had dealt “a decisive blow to bandits terrorising villages in the area”.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it was investigating “reports of vigilante losses”.

“While the operation successfully eliminated several bandits and led to the recovery of some kidnap victims, the NAF views with grave concern reports of the loss of civilian lives in the course of the operation,” it said in a statement.

It said an ongoing “comprehensive investigation” would ascertain the truth of the matter, which would be “communicated to inform and reassure the public”.

The AFP news agency quoted a local as saying that the civilians were returning to their villages after chasing away bandits when they were bombed.

The villagers “recovered 16 bodies from the attacks and took several other people with severe injuries to the hospital”, Sa’idu Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

Rights group Amnesty International Nigeria put the death toll at 20 and said dozens of others were injured in the attack on Tunga Kara village, and called on authorities to “immediately and impartially” investigate the incident.

“Launching air raids is not a legitimate law enforcement method by anyone’s standard. Such reckless use of deadly force is unlawful, outrageous and lays bare the Nigerian military’s shocking disregard for the lives of those it supposedly exists to protect,” it said in a statement.

In recent years, Nigeria’s security forces have been fighting powerful criminal gangs, known as bandits, who have been terrorising north-west and central states. The bandits raid villages, burn homes and kill and abduct residents for ransom.

Several accidental air strikes have occurred in recent months including a Christmas Day attack that killed at least 10 civilians in neighbouring Sokoto state.

In 2023, at least 85 civilians, mostly women and children, attending a Muslim religious gathering at a village in Kaduna state were killed after they were mistaken for bandits.

In January 2017, at least 112 people were killed when a jet struck a camp housing 40,000 people who had been displaced by jihadist violence in a town near the Cameroonian border.

Tyson Fury announces retirement from boxing

British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from the sport, stating that he is officially hanging up his gloves.

The 36-year-old former world champion made the announcement in a video posted on his Instagram, where he said, “I would like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this – Dick Turpin wore a mask!”

Fury, who had previously announced his retirement after his victory over Dillian Whyte in 2022, has made a habit of stepping away from the sport only to make a comeback. Despite his earlier declaration of retirement, he returned to the ring later that year.

His latest announcement comes amid ongoing speculation about his future in boxing, particularly following his rematch loss to reigning heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk in December. Just days ago, Sky Sports News reported that Wembley Stadium had been reserved for a potential Fury fight against Anthony Joshua this summer.

Sky News sports correspondent Rob Harris weighed in on the surprise retirement announcement, noting that Fury had announced his retirement before only to return. “Fury has announced his retirement in the past, in 2022, he was lured out of retirement that time, so is this really the end for Tyson Fury at 36?” Harris asked. “If it is, he has had one of the great British heavyweight boxing careers, but with that element of caution, he does often make these announcements then decide he can’t resist the lure of the ring.”

Harris also pointed out that lucrative bouts like Fury’s loss to Usyk could make it difficult for the boxer to stay away. “Fights like this are very lucrative… so maybe the finances make it too irresistible,” he added.

Fury’s last retirement, two years ago, came after his claim that he was done with the sport following his third fight with Deontay Wilder. “I’ve been in this game 20 years, I’m 34 in a few months. I said the third (Deontay) Wilder fight would be my last, but I felt I owed the fans one last homecoming. This is definitely the end of the Gypsy King and I went out with a bang,” he said at the time.

Footballer Havertz’s wife reveals the threats she received after Arsenal‘s FA Cup loss to Manchester United

0

Arsenal striker, Kai Havertz’s wife has shared the sickening messages she received during Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup third round on Sunday evening, January 12.\

United took the lead through Bruno Fernandes in the second half before Gabriel pulled Arsenal level, two minutes after Diogo Dalot was sent off.

Martin Odegaard then missed a penalty, while both Havertz and Declan Rice squandered excellent chances from close range before the tie was taken to a shootout after it ended 1-1 following 30 minutes of extra time.

Havertz saw his penalty saved by Altay Bayindir during the shootout as United went on to win 5-3, which secured their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

In the immediate aftermath of Arsenal’s defeat, Havertz’s wife, Sophia, revealed the abusive messages she had received on Instagram during the game.

The message read: “I’m gonna come to your house and slaughter your baby, I’m not joking just wait.”

When sharing the two messages, Sophia Havertz wrote: “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are ashamed of yourself.

“I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this.”

When asked about Havertz’s penalty miss after Arsenal’s FA Cup exit, Arteta said: “To him and to all of them, that I love them, that we all love them individually and as a team, they are a joy.

“What this team produces every three days is incredible regardless of what happens. And I’m not going to lose sight of that because of our results or for two because we didn’t deserve those results.

“What can we do better, let’s try to do it. It’s very difficult to achieve.

“It’s an emotional part. It’s something related to confidence as well. But it’s very difficult to ask something else from our players.”

India’s Taliban Diplomacy: A Pragmatic Shift?

0

In a move that has sparked intense speculation, India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, in Dubai this week. This high-level engagement marks a significant development in India’s relations with the Taliban, which have been gradually warming up over the past year.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture, with India having invested over $3 billion in aid and reconstruction work in Afghanistan over the past two decades. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has emphasized regional developments, trade, and humanitarian cooperation, as well as an agreement to resume developmental projects and support the health sector and refugees in Afghanistan.

However, analysts suggest that there may be more to this meeting than meets the eye. Kabir Taneja, deputy director and fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, an Indian think tank, notes that this development is merely a “natural progression” of India’s cautious approach to the Taliban since 2021. “The Taliban is a reality, and ignoring Afghanistan and the Afghan people is not an option,” he adds.

Raghav Sharma, associate professor at the Jindal School of International Affairs in New Delhi, concurs, stating that this engagement is a continuation of India’s earlier policy of cautiously interacting with the Taliban.

ndia’s Taliban Diplomacy:
So, what drives India’s Taliban diplomacy? One key factor is the desire to counter Pakistan’s influence in Afghanistan. By engaging with the Taliban, India aims to reduce Pakistan’s sway over the group and limit its ability to use Afghan soil for terrorist activities against India.

Another crucial aspect is India’s bid to protect its significant investments in Afghanistan. With the Taliban now in power, India needs to ensure that its developmental projects and economic interests are safeguarded.

The Taliban, too, stands to gain from this engagement. By diversifying its relationships with regional powers, the group can reduce its dependence on Pakistan and bolster its legitimacy as a governing authority.

However, this pragmatic shift in India’s Taliban policy also raises concerns. Some experts warn that engaging with the Taliban could legitimize its extremist ideology and perpetuate regional instability.

As India navigates this complex diplomatic landscape, it must carefully balance its strategic interests with the need to promote stability and security in the region. The outcome of this delicate balancing act will have far-reaching implications for India, Afghanistan, and the broader regional dynamics.

India’s Taliban diplomacy marks a significant shift in its foreign policy approach. While this pragmatic engagement may yield short-term benefits, it is crucial for India to remain vigilant and ensure that its actions do not inadvertently perpetuate extremism or destabilize the region. Only time will tell if this diplomatic gamble will pay off.

Ukraine captures two North Korean Soldiers in Russia’s Kursk Region, President Zelensky confirms

KYIV — In a groundbreaking revelation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has captured two North Korean soldiers who were fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This marks the first official confirmation by Ukraine of detaining North Korean troops, who were deployed to the battlefield late last year.

According to the Washington Post, the soldiers, who were wounded during the conflict, were captured from Russia’s Kursk region and transported to Kyiv for questioning. According to President Zelensky, this was no ordinary capture. “Two soldiers, though wounded, survived and were transported to Kyiv, where they are now communicating with the Security Service of Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday. The post included photos of the two soldiers in custody, offering a rare glimpse into the involvement of North Korean troops in the war.

Zelensky went on to explain the immense difficulty of the task at hand, highlighting the brutal nature of the conflict. “This was not an easy task,” he stated, shedding light on the severe risks faced by Ukraine’s forces in securing these prisoners. He revealed that Russian forces, in coordination with other North Korean military personnel, typically execute their wounded comrades to erase any traces of North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine. This grim practice is part of an ongoing effort by Moscow and Pyongyang to maintain deniability about North Korea’s role in the war.

President Zelensky
In the post, Zelensky emphasized the significance of capturing the soldiers, underscoring the importance of exposing North Korea’s direct involvement in the conflict. “This is evidence of North Korea’s complicity in the war,” he noted. The wounded soldiers, once in Ukrainian custody, are reportedly in communication with the Security Service of Ukraine, which is currently conducting an interrogation to gather intelligence about North Korea’s role in Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

The presence of North Korean soldiers on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine is a controversial and alarming development. North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong-un, has long been known for its alliance with Russia, with the two countries deepening military and economic ties in recent years. While North Korea has officially denied sending troops to fight in Ukraine, there have been growing reports suggesting that Pyongyang has quietly supported Moscow’s efforts through military aid, including sending artillery shells and other supplies to bolster Russian forces.

In 2022, reports emerged that North Korean forces were deployed to the region, particularly in areas close to the Russian border. These troops have been suspected of operating in various capacities, including logistics and artillery support, alongside Russian forces.

The capture of these two soldiers represents a significant breakthrough for Ukraine, as it provides direct evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the conflict. The soldiers’ testimonies could offer valuable insights into the scope of North Korea’s military presence in Ukraine and its collaboration with Russian forces.

The capture is particularly timely as the war in Ukraine enters its second year, with ongoing battles taking a heavy toll on both sides. Ukraine’s forces have made significant advances in retaking occupied territories, while Russia has continued to exert pressure through a combination of artillery strikes and aerial bombardments.

The involvement of North Korean soldiers adds a new dimension to the conflict, raising concerns about the further escalation of hostilities and the potential for additional foreign involvement. Experts believe that the presence of North Korean troops could further complicate the already tense relations between Ukraine and Russia, while also provoking international condemnation of North Korea’s support for Moscow’s aggression.

In Kyiv, the news of the capture has been met with cautious optimism. While Ukraine’s leadership remains focused on pressing forward with their military objectives, the capture of the North Korean soldiers also serves as a reminder of the international nature of the conflict, which continues to draw in a range of global powers.

The capture of the North Korean soldiers is expected to have significant diplomatic ramifications, particularly in the context of global condemnation of North Korea’s support for Russia. It remains to be seen how the international community, including the United Nations and other key players, will respond to this new development.

North Korea’s continued backing of Russia raises serious concerns, especially given the international sanctions already placed on the country for its nuclear weapons program. Should further evidence emerge of North Korea’s military involvement in Ukraine, it could prompt calls for stricter sanctions and increased pressure on Pyongyang to cease its support for Moscow’s war efforts.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky and the Ukrainian government have vowed to continue gathering intelligence from the prisoners and further investigate North Korea’s role in the war. “This is an ongoing investigation, and we will not stop until we uncover the full extent of North Korea’s participation in this unjust war,” Zelensky said in his statement.

The capture of two North Korean soldiers by Ukrainian forces marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict. As the war in Ukraine continues to evolve, this new revelation serves as a stark reminder of the complex web of international involvement, as well as the resilience of Ukraine’s forces in their battle against Russian aggression. With North Korea’s military support now confirmed, Ukraine’s leadership will undoubtedly seek to leverage this development to gain further international support in its efforts to confront Russian expansionism and defend its sovereignty.

HENRY KAPATA SHEDS  LIGHT ON THE MEASURE OF THE LEVEL OF WATER AT KARIBA

HENRY KAPATA SHEDS  LIGHT ON THE MEASURE OF THE LEVEL OF WATER AT KARIBA

Henry Kapata writes….

Hello,

Will respond to your questions upon engaging experts.

✅ 1. What instruments do they use to measure the level of water Mr KAPATA.

ANS: Currently they have manual gauges that are read three times a day at all our monitoring stations.

✅ 2. What is the process of water traveling from the source.

ANS: The source of water into Kariba is from various sources, that is rainfall on the reservoir, inflow from the mainstream Zambezi River and its tributaries. The movement of the water in the catchment as it moves from various sources into the reservoir, in case of the immediate catchment, the effects is almost immediate on the reservoir, but for the mainstream Zambezi River much of the water reaches between the months of March to May every year depending on the antecedent environmental conditions.

✅ 3. When does Kariba allocate water to the two utilities when we’ve had good rains.

ANS: The allocation of water at Kariba for power generation is done annually, this is usually done after the global, regional and National rainfall forecasts season is done. This is done in August/September of every year.

✅ 4. Current water levels with the continuous rains.

ANS:The current water levels are steadily increasing as the rain season progresses, though lower than last year for the same period. As of 13th January 2025, the Lake Lavel is 475.94 or 3.09% live storage while last year it was higher at 477.42 or 13.31% live storage.

✅ 5. How long does the water take to reach power stations.

ANS: The contribution of water in the reservoir is through rainfall on the reservoir, the mainstream Zambezi River and its tributaries. The movement of the water system in the catchment as it moves into the reservoir and eventually the power stations varies: in the case of the immediate catchment, the effect is almost immediate, but for the mainstream Zambezi River much of the water reaches between the months of March to May every year depending of the antecedent environmental conditions.

✅ 6. Who monitors the water levels on ZAMBEZI River?

ANS: The mandate of water resource management and monitoring according to the law is a preserve of WARMA, but the Authority has interest in terms of monitoring the volumes of water that enters Lake Kariba Reservoir; hence the Authority has a number of monitoring stations with full time employees of the Authority that take daily water levels for sustainable water management.

✅ 7. When do power stations capture the water into reservoirs.

ANS: The usage of water by the power stations is done through water allocation, the power stations draw their annual water allocation daily by generating power while monitoring of the daily water usage of against allocation.

Zambia Removed from the United Nations Human Rights Council – Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Zambia Removed from the United Nations Human Rights Council

President Hakainde Hichilema’s stranglehold on the legislature and the judiciary, his government’s attack on democracy, and enabling a shrinking democratic space and the flagrant abuse of human rights especially by the Zambia Police has earned Zambia a boot out of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Until now, Hichilema’s international profile was rising contrasting himself away from his predecessor whose government he accused of perpetrating human rights violations.

In fact, in July 2024, the UN Human Rights Council adopted Zambia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) outcome. During the UPR.

Zambia had pleged to amend the Public Order Act, reoeal the death penalty and pledged to protect freedom of expression, assembly, and association, and to end child marriage.

Zambia has been the subject of multiple UPR reviews, including in 2008, 2012, and 2017.

The UPR Working Group examines a country’s human rights record.

The UPR working Group cited smong things, human rights issues and violations in Zambia that include:

Freedom of expression

The government has restricted freedom of expression and media freedom, including through censorship, violence against journalists, and the use of criminal libel laws.
Women’s and girls’ rights Child marriage persists, despite the enactment of the Children’s Code Act in 2022.

Discrimination

There is discrimination against people with disabilities and based on sexual orientation.

Labor rights.

There are restrictions on labor rights, including forced labor and child labour

The Human Rights Council is comprised of 47 Member States, which are elected by majority vote in the United Nations General Assembly.

With membership of the Council comes a responsibility to uphold the highest #humanrights standards.

Here is the 2025 membership.

UMODZI KUM’MAWA CONDEMNS AND DENOUNCES UPND’s ABUSE OF THE JUDICIARY

UMODZI KUM’MAWA CONDEMNS AND DENOUNCES UPND’s ABUSE OF THE JUDICIARY

The KUM’MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION, also known as UMODZI KUM’MAWA, unequivocally condemns the blatant and distressing abuse of the Judiciary by the current UPND regime. Recent attempts by the government to have the Constitutional Court’s ruling regarding the status of Ministers after the dissolution of Parliament reviewed, alongside their previous push to alter judgments on eligibility cases, illustrate a concerning trend of undermining judicial independence. This manipulation of our legal system raises alarms about the UPND’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

We are particularly dismayed that this government prioritizes its legislative maneuvers over addressing pressing national crises such as the escalating hunger situation, the overwhelming cost of living, and the ongoing energy crisis. It is alarming to witness the UPND’s readiness to compromise the integrity of our institutions to serve its political interests, rather than fulfilling the promises made to the Zambian people. This approach not only disrespects the foundational principles of governance but also dismisses the critical challenges facing ordinary citizens.

In light of this situation, we call upon our fellow Zambians to unite in defense of our justice system. It is vital that we reject any attempts to undermine our Judiciary, as what was deemed unacceptable when the UPND was in opposition should remain intolerable now that they hold power. We encourage all citizens to be vigilant and assertive in saying no to these harmful agendas that threaten to erode our judicial integrity and democratic values.

We also appeal directly to President Hakainde Hichilema  and the Chief Justice to reflect on the legacy they are crafting through these actions. The path of undermining established legal precedents and manipulating institutions may offer temporary benefits, but it is a road that will ultimately haunt them and the nation in the long run.

We urge the government to redirect its focus towards genuinely addressing the issues that plague our society, rather than engaging in reckless and self-serving legal battles.

Petition against Ministers’ stay in office after dissolution of Parliament was a court action started by the UPND

0

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Petition against Ministers’ stay in office after dissolution of Parliament was a court action started by the UPND.

UPND Secretary General, Steven Katuka and the Law Association of Zambia, sued the Attorney General and 63 Ministers.

He was represented by Keith Mweemba of Keith Mweemba Advocates and Gilbert Phiri ( current DPP) of PNP Advocates.

So what has changed? Why begon and pursue a case like that which a give death nail blow and render a Constitutional Court that is struggling for credibility and deemed an extended appendage of State House.

President Hakainde Hichilema must stop these machinations as they are sinking our democracy and opening the country to an unkown and unmarked road that will lead to only one state; anarchy and chaos.

The brief background of this case is that the 2nd Petitioner,
Stephen Katuka, filed his petition against the Attorney General of the Republic of Zambia.

He did so in his capacity as Secretary General of the United Party for National Development (UPND) as a matter of public
interest and as a person with interest in what he termed to be matters
inconsistent with the spirit of the Constitution.

The Petition was filed pursuant to Articles 2 and 128(3) of the Constitution as amended Katuka sought the interpretation of the Court whether,
pursuant to Articles 72 (1), 81, 111(4) (c) and 116(3) of the Constitution of
Zambia, the Vice-President and Cabinet Ministers of the Government of the
Republic of Zambia can continue holding their ministerial positions and
continue to enjoy benefits associated with their portfolios and draw salaries
and allowances, among others.

He therefore claimed the following reliefs from the Court against the Attorney-General.

The Court ruled in favour of UPND and the Law Association of Zambia;

“To put it in its proper context, the Ministers cannot be said to be discharging the functions of their offices to entitle them to any payments, as
appointments to the said offices ceased upon the dissolution of Parliament
on 11th May, 2016.”

“We would have agreed with the Solicitor General’s
argument if the Cabinet Ministers and Provincial Ministers were appointed from outside Parliament as was initially proposed in the Bill that was tabled and considered by the National Assembly.”

“This is what was envisaged by
Articles 116 and 117 prior to the amendment to Articles 116 (1) and 117 (1). Remaining in office after the dissolution of Parliament was tied to the
Ministers and Provincial Ministers being appointed outside Parliament so
that the dissolution of Parliament would not have had an effect on their
continued stay in office until the President- elect is sworn into office”

Zambia sanctions from UN a scar – Kalaba

Zambia sanctions from UN a scar – Kalaba

Harry Kalaba, the President of the Citizens First party has described as sad, the UNHRC decision to drop it off the list of member countries.

Kalaba said the UN bodies decision confirms that Zambia is teetering on the brink of becoming a pariah state in the eyes of the international community.

“It’s very sad that our country once known as a shining example of a budding democracy that respects human rights is now being relegated to the cesspool of a human rights abuser this ought to change for the better,” said Kalaba.

The CF president, also a former long term serving Minister of Foreign Affairs warned that if Zambia under the administration of president Hichilema does not change, it could face further sanctions from other international bodies.

“Today it’s the UN rights body,” Kalaba said, “tomorrow it may be SADC, EU, USA or some such and before we know it, we will stand isolated like political lepers.”

The CF president said the latest UN decision to sanction Zambia is informed by numerous reports coming out of the southern African country regarding evidence of wanton abuse of human rights under the UPND government of Mr Hichilema.

Kalaba said arbitrary arrests of citizens and prolonged illegal detentions beyond the stipulated legal requirement constitute one of the reasons Zambia is off the list of countries on the UN rights body now.

Zambia’s fall from the UN grace is also buttressed by past condemnation from it’s own Human Rights Commission, the United States department and others.

Kalaba said unbeknownst to president Hichilema and his cronies, the deteriorating state of human rights in Zambia could negatively impact his re election bid next year.

“We need to bring Zambia back to the top of the food chain regarding human rights and the fight against corruption and in my view that is only possible under CF,” said Kalaba

THE HEAVY SILENCE, I FEEL IT TOO LOUD

Lunte MP Hon. Mutotwe KAfwaya writes:::::::::

THE HEAVY SILENCE, I FEEL IT TOO LOUD.

I wish Hon Mumbi Phiri well.

But Zambians know better – perhaps there is a way I would have liked to see Zambians respond, and that is by expressing themselves more freely and more frequently to help those in government to govern better

I recall  some Zambians thinking that the PF government wanted to amend the Constitution in order to perpetuate ECL’s stay in office. Then they shouted from every mouth of every civil society organisation to every mouth of every opposition members of parliament of the time.

Some of opposition members of parliament would eventually toast and dance to the fall of Bill 10 at some privately owned property which would later unconventionally host government business.

Hungry Lion packs were shared among them with some softies representative of their financial status then. But we know that change happened!

Some today are called DJ minerals, akatuntulu and so on – very interesting!

What was the main reason for their refusal to support Bill 10 to the majority of them? The PROCESS! And so they campaigned against it like you’ve never seen them campaign.

The process did they judge not to have been inclusive enough.

The process did they judge not have been sufficiently consultative too.

And of course the content was wrongly projected to have had the agenda of perpetuating ECL’s stay in office longer than his Constitutionally allowed tenure.

As such, civil society joined in, the church joined in and some international community members weighed in.

And there we went, Bill 10 collapsed.

That process came to an end. The Constitution of the Republic of Zambia, as amended in 2016 remains intact to date.

Those who opposed the process while in opposition are in government today. They want to amend the constitution now. To do so, they want to follow an abbreviated process. They want to shorted further the process which led to their not only refusal but campaign against Bill 10.

Sufficient consultations does not matter to them now.

Inclusivity does not matter to them now.

What shall we call these people if not hypocrites- if they go ahead with this abbreviated process of Constitutional amendment?

I have heard some of them speak of shame, if this does not produce shame on their part; what will?

They even have the ability to say that they will rely on work done in the past. What audacity?

How can one rely on work which was rejected and disposed off?

When a Bill falls, it has been rejected for everything it stands for. It’s content, it’s intentions and it’s process. If a similar Bill has to be promulgated, any well meaning promoter must follow a new but enhanced process to assure legitimacy and demonstrate improvement. How difficult is that to perceive?

It is therefore a strong lack of sincerety and integrity on the part of whoever in government wishes to promote that constitutional amendment relying on the rejected and disposed off work of the past.

When people change government, they expect better from their new set of leaders. What this new set is saying and intending to do in this regard is lowering the bar below the old threshold.

That threshold which was rejected by the opposition of the time and other people, which caused the amendment to fail.  How can a new government push to betray the conscience of its members and supporters who overwhelmingly rejected the process they now want to abbreviate?

It will accounted to you to have been insincere misleaders in an event that you follow through this work with an abbreviated process. It is immoral to say one thing and do the complete opposite.

Insincerity and immorality are a very bad combination for leadership. Both of the are antithetical to integrity which must must be the chief ethical consideration in leadership.

Speaking for myself, I long sensed your inability to govern according to your promises of good governance.

Today:

When I look at your cadres at the Electoral Commision of Zambia who are supposed to operate at policy level acting like they are employed at operational level,

When I look at the misconduct of the registrar of societies.

When I look at the ECL illegibility judgement turn-around,

When I look at the shameless intentions in the ministers stay in office after dissolution of parliament conversation, and the silence of even the most loud mouths in government on the matter; I see a desperate group beyond mcomprehension – and it will be accounted unto you as hypocrites.

Remember the people who talked the loudest against ministers stay in office after dissolution of parliament. Why should they be quite now?

Look at the content of those two government sponsored bills which were withdrawn after public pressure; the Cyber Crimes Bill and the Cyber Security Bill. Look the content of the Hate speech amendment currently underway. It is indeed what somebody said – ‘cry my beloved country’ – this land of my fathers!

If a government can spend time thinking and processing such work, when will it think and process programs to alleviate the suffering of majority Zambians?

Programs to reduce the price of fuel,
Programs to end load shedding,
Programs to reduce the price of electricity,
Programs to reduce the price of farming inputs,
Programs to reduce the price of the dollar,
Programs to reduce the price of borrowing,
Programs to reduce the prices of essential commodities,
Programs to improve drug availability in hospitals,
Programs to end government corruption,
Programs to end illicit financial flows,
Programs to end government maladministration
Programs to end national divisions – and many more! Where will you find the time? Just to ask again.

With the heavy silence of every mouth which talked the loudest in time past, it is more than clear that the Zambian people know better.

Even those who called the radio and tv stations in support of the ideas of the then opposition, today are producing videos of begging government to help them; saying that they are now suffering more than they were suffering when they were in opposition. Zambians know better –

Let those with  use them wisely.

Naenda ine nikambako che!

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

The UPND’s Heartless Demolition of Livelihoods along Lumumba road: A continued Betrayal of the Zambian People- New Heritage Party

The UPND’s Heartless Demolition of Livelihoods along Lumumba road: A continued Betrayal of the Zambian People

The New Heritage Party (NHP) sympathizes deeply with the owners of the 150 shops that were recently demolished by the UPND-led government, as well as the traders who operated within them. We understand the devastating impact this heartless action has had on their lives and livelihoods. This not the first demolition, but has been across the country before

For years, these businesses have contributed to the country’s economy, paying taxes and generating revenue for the government. However, instead of being supported and empowered, they have been demonized and destroyed by the very government that has been benefiting from their hard work on an excuse of being on a drainage or any flimsy excuse.

It is appalling that the UPND-led government has been collecting revenue from these businesses for years, only to turn around and destroy their livelihoods. This is a clear example of a government that prioritizes its own interests over those of its citizens. The government’s actions are driven by a desire to enjoy the taxes collected from these businesses in the form of allowances and salaries, while disregarding the welfare of the people who generate these taxes.

The UPND-led government sucks the life out of local businesses, leaving only destruction and despair in their wake. The UPND are heartlessly feeding on the livelihood of the innocent and vulnerable, leaving them impoverished and destitute.

As the NHP, we condemn the UPND’s heartless demolition of livelihoods in the strongest possible terms. We demand that the government takes immediate action to provide alternative solutions and support to the affected traders and owners. It’s time for the UPND to put the interests of the Zambian people above their own selfish agendas.

The UPND’s leadership must be held accountable for their monstrous actions. We urge all Zambians to join us in demanding better from our leaders. Together, we can build a brighter future for our nation, one that prioritizes the needs and aspirations of the Zambian people, not the selfish interests of vampire-like attitudes.

I AM NOT ASHAMED OF SUPPORTING DEVELOPMENT-  Chipangali PF MP Andrew Lubusha

I AM NOT ASHAMED OF SUPPORTING DEVELOPMENT-LUBUSHA

January 12,2025

Chipangali Constituency Member of Parliament and Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson Andrew Lubusha has boldly declared his support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, citing its transformative development agenda.

Speaking during an engagement with party stakeholders in Petauke, Mr. Lubusha commended the United Party for National Development (UPND) government for its robust and people-centered policies.

Mr. Lubusha emphasized that President Hichilema’s leadership has eased his work as an MP by delivering tangible development to the people of Chipangali through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He noted that the CDF has financed the construction of classroom blocks, health facilities, and other critical infrastructure while also providing loans, grants, and free education.

The Chipangali MP highlighted additional programs such as social cash transfers, emergency transfers, and cash-for-work initiatives, which he said have uplifted the livelihoods of the people in his constituency.

Mr. Lubusha expressed gratitude to the government for its commitment to improving communication infrastructure, citing the installation of six out of eleven requested communication towers in his constituency.

He attributed these achievements to the exceptional leadership of President Hichilema and reaffirmed his unwavering support for the UPND government.

“We are supporting the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema because we can see and feel the development he is bringing to mother Zambia,” Mr. Lubusha stated.

He described Chipangali as a direct beneficiary of President Hichilema’s progressive and inclusive governance.

PF  WRITES TO INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ABOUT HICHILEMA’S DICTATORSHIP AND HARRASMENT OF MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION

PATRIOTIC FRONT WRITES TO INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ABOUT HICHILEMA’S DICTATORSHIP AND HARRASMENT OF MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION

Monday 13th January 2025

The Chairperson-Southern African Development Community (SADC),

The Chairperson- The African Union (AU),

Ambassadors Accredited to Zambia,

The Secretary General-The Commonwealth,

SUBJECT; DETORIARIATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN ZAMBIA-THE CASE OF HON. MUMBI PHIRI AND OTHERS

Mrs. Hon. Mumbi Phiri is a member of the Opposition party, the Patriotic Front. She is a former Member of Parliament for Munali Constituency in Lusaka.

She is also a former Deputy Secretary General of the Party.

In February 2022, Hon. Mumbi Phiri was charged and arrested for murder. She was subjected to a trial and was imprisoned for over 428 days.

The charges against her were false but she suffered this incarceration.

Hon. Mumbi has once again been arrested and charged with armed robbery, false charges that arise from her brave act to expose and attempt to stop electoral fraud in the Kawambwa by-election that was being perpetrated by Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha.

The case of Hon. Mumbi is not different from the false and fabricated charges that have been concocted and preferred against members of the Opposition;

1. Socialist Party President Dr, Fred Mmembe- Charged with Sedition.

2. Given Lubinda- Charged and arrested for refusing to attend to the Committee on parliamentary privileges and failure to surrender passport.

3. Patriotic Front Secretary General, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda -Hate Speech, Sedition, Criminal Defamation.

4. Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity and Presidential Candidate, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba charged with sedition, assaulting a police officer after he was brutalized and beaten by the same police officers, and for disorderly conduct at the police station.

5. FDD President Edith Nawakwi-Arrested for espionage and seditious practices.

6. Lumezi Member of Parliament, Hon. Munir Zulu- Criminal Defamation, Hate Speech and Seditious Practices.

7. Mfuwe MP, Hon. Maureen Mabonga-Seditious Practices.

10. Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) President, Sean Tembo-Hate Speech, Criminal Defamation.

11. Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee and Presidential Candidate, Hon. Chishimna Kambwili-Hate Speech and Criminal Defamation.

12. Patriotic Front Eastern Province Information Secretary, Rizwan Patel and two others- charged with aggravated robbery.

13. A large number of social-media bloggers, and vloggers have been arrested and prosecuted for their criticism of government.

The action by the Zambia Police to be used to clamp down on members of the Opposition is part of the larger goal to seriously destabilize the Opposition ahead of the 2026 elections, render it extremely weak and eliminate strong contenders against President Hakainde Hichilema.

Both the Zambia Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions have refused to prosecute persons such as the Minister of Education, Mr. Douglas Siakalima who has publicly issued tribal remarks and hate speech against the people of Luapula and Bembas, and a UPND youth from Northwestern Province Chikokela Moses who has pledged to eliminate the life of the former President, Edgar Lungu.

Further, President Hakainde Hichilema, and the Zambia Police have refused to deal with persons at State House implicated in the abduction and torture of Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda.

Further President Hichilema has engaged in malicious actions that have obliterated the independence and autonomy of democratic institutions and has severely undermined the separation of powers among the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary which are under firmly under the control and direction of the Executive.

This is exemplified by the action of the Constitutional Court, acting on a petition from a UPND Youth, Michelo Chizombe and perpetrated y Government to stop and prevent former President Edgar Lungu from participating in presidential elections.

Further members of the Opposition have been incarcerated and denied the right to appeal and prevented from obtaining bail pending appeal thereby breaching their fundamental right to appeal and right to innocence until the process is completed.

Zambia has recently been cited and recorded for flagrantly breaching human rights, shrinking the media and democratic space, restrict operations of the Opposition. These reports are contained in the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, the United States Department Country Report on Human Rights Practices, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have expressed concern about this sadden development.

These autocratic and dictatorial actions by the Government of President Hakainde Hichilema, have undermined Zambia’s national peace and security and places it on a dangerous course of possible civil unrest and instability.

It is imperative that organisations and entities such as yours, record, recognize and speak against these human rights abuses and threats against Zambia’s democracy to promote nationhood, peace and security in Zambia and the region.

Further it is important that diplomatic and international pressure is brought to bear to have Hon. Mumbi Phiri to be released and charges against her and other members of the Opposition be dropped.

The Disturbing Trend of Labeling Critics as “Bitter”- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

The Disturbing Trend of Labeling Critics as “Bitter”

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

In a healthy democracy, truth must never be silenced — yet an alarming pattern has emerged among some United Party for National Development (UPND) officials and sympathizers. Whenever citizens, commentators, or political analysts speak truth to power or offer honest criticism of President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, they are quickly dismissed and branded with a demeaning label — “bitter.”

This raises fundamental questions: Why do they find it so intolerable when President Hichilema is held accountable? Why should telling the truth about governance failures or holding leaders to their promises be seen as an act of malice? Democracy demands honest scrutiny, debate, and dissent. A leader who genuinely champions transparency, as President Hichilema pledged, should not just tolerate but embrace criticism as a necessary force for progress and better governance.

Should the citizens suffering under economic strain, skyrocketing living costs, or poor service delivery be expected to stay silent? Do the President’s supporters believe Zambians should pretend that everything is perfect, even as they endure the harsh realities of a struggling economy or unmet campaign promises? Silence in the face of wrong is complicity. Speaking out is not bitterness — it is patriotism. Constructive criticism is the backbone of a thriving democracy. It holds power to account, strengthens institutions, and demands better for the people.

Even more troubling is the growing culture of portraying President Hichilema as a messianic figure, beyond reproach. Hero worship, no matter how charismatic the leader, is dangerous. It erodes critical thinking and blinds a nation to flaws that need correction. Every leader is human and prone to mistakes. A strong democracy ensures its leaders are reminded of their humanity, not elevated to untouchable status. President Hichilema’s legacy will not be built on praise but on his willingness to confront hard truths and serve the people honestly.

Dismissing critics as “bitter” does nothing to address the substance of their concerns. It is a deflection tactic that fails to tackle the root causes of discontent. Governance failures, economic challenges, and policy missteps cannot be fixed by silencing dissenting voices. Instead, they require honest introspection, a commitment to reform, and dialogue with those brave enough to challenge the status quo.

In conclusion, branding truth-tellers as “bitter” undermines the very principles of democracy that President Hichilema vowed to uphold. True leadership listens — even when the truth is uncomfortable. To build a better Zambia, this administration must value and encourage constructive criticism, recognizing it as a cornerstone of progress. Criticism is not an act of bitterness — it is the soul of democracy, and the voice of a people demanding better.

To the President’s supporters: it is not enemies who point out where things are going wrong — it is the citizens who care deeply about their country. Ignore their voices at your peril.

MWIIMBU HOLDS IN-HOUSE MEETING WITH THE ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE COMMAND

MWIIMBU HOLDS IN-HOUSE MEETING WITH THE ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE COMMAND

Sunday, 12th January 2025. Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Jacob Mwiimbu, SC., MP. held an in-house meeting today with the Zambia Police Service Command at the Ministry Headquarters.

The Zambia Police Service Command was led by the Inspector General of Police Mr Graphael Musamba while the Hon Minister was accompanied by his Permanent Secretary Mr Dickson Matembo.

Mr. Mwiimbu addressed the meeting on two (2) broader areas of the Zambia Police Service namely, Administration and Operations.

ADMINISTRATION
1. Discipline. He observed that there was need to maintain high levels of discipline among officers of all ranks particularly among male officers who seem to have high attraction to commiting crime.
Mr. Mwiimbu who breathed fire on matters relating to discipline urged all Provincial Commissioners and  Unit Commanders to take stern action against erring officers.
“Senior officers must be of high discipline too”, he stressed.

2. Promotions. The Minister expressed concern on maters relating to promotions. He emphasized the need to observe seniority alongside passing Police Examinations whenever there is need to promote officers.

3. Conditions of Service. Mr. Mwiimbu directed the Police Command to initiate the process of revising Conditions of Service for the Zambia Police Service personnel which seem to be inferior to those of other services.

OPERATIONS.
1. Policing 2026 General Elections. The Minister reminded the Inspector General of Police and his Command that the general elections are barely 18 months away.

” You must prepare adequately to ensure law and order during the next general elections. Take into account, the right of citizens. Interest of general citizens take precedent”, he said.

2. Over Detention of Suspects. Mr Mwiimbu reiterated the Presidential directive not to over detain suspects.
“Suspects with bondable offences must be bonded for as long as they are not perpetual offenders”, Mr Mwiimbu emphasized.

3. Traffic Management. The
Minister reminded the Police Command that only approved Road Blocks should be the ones to be tolerated. He indicated that road blocks should not be mounted on account of personal interest.

Mr Mwiimbu also encouraged the Zambia Police Service to uphold Communication Standard within the service and ensure that the spirit of working together is maintained.
He acknowledged the insufficient number of motor vehicles in the Service. He was however quick to mention that soon the Police will receive motor vehicles that will ease operations.

The minister indicated the need to upgrade some stations to district status.

The Inspector General of Police Mr Graphael Musamba appreciated the address by the minister and assured him of total commitment to the people’s expectation.

He assured the minister that the concerns raised will be addressed by his Command.

Mnangagwa intensifying efforts to extend his presidential term limit

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is intensifying efforts to extend his presidency beyond the constitutional two-term limit, with a strategy aimed at postponing Zimbabwe’s next elections from 2028 to 2030. This move is part of a broader campaign to navigate around constitutional barriers that prevent him from seeking a third term.

Zanu PF, with backing from the main opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has resolved to delay the elections, citing the need to complete developmental projects under Mnangagwa’s administration. CCC Chief Whip Charles Moyo confirmed the party’s support, stating:

“As CCC, we are lobbying for the deferment of elections. We are proposing dialogue as the CCC together with the revolutionary party Zanu PF to allow smooth implementation of the National Development Strategy 2.”

This development aligns with Zanu PF’s resolution during its 2023 annual conference in Bulawayo, which called for Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond 2028.

Despite public claims of disinterest in extending his rule, Mnangagwa has actively pursued mechanisms to remain in power. According to The NewsHawks, his initial plan for a third term proved impractical due to constitutional constraints. Zimbabwe’s Constitution limits presidents to two terms, and removing these limits requires a referendum. To allow Mnangagwa to benefit from any change, a second referendum would be necessary – a formidable legal and political hurdle.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and his military-aligned faction within Zanu PF reportedly oppose Mnangagwa’s plan. However, they are seen as too politically weak or cautious to openly challenge him. This internal division highlights the fragility of Zanu PF’s unity on the issue.

Patrick Chinamasa, Zanu PF’s legal affairs secretary, acknowledged that holding two referenda to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure is a difficult proposition. Despite these obstacles, Mnangagwa’s allies remain steadfast, with public calls for him to stay in power gaining momentum.

The push for delayed elections and extended rule follows a pattern seen among some liberation movements in the region. Similar strategies have been employed to maintain political dominance, raising questions about democratic consolidation in Southern Africa.

Critics argue that postponing elections undermines Zimbabwe’s democratic processes and sets a dangerous precedent. Opposition voices within and outside Zanu PF caution against prioritizing political maneuvering over constitutionalism and accountability.

As Mnangagwa’s 2030 plan unfolds, attention will focus on whether the proposed election delay gains formal approval and how the public responds to these developments. With two referenda required to amend the Constitution and a divided Zanu PF, the road to extending Mnangagwa’s rule is fraught with uncertainty.

The situation underscores the growing tension between constitutional principles and political ambitions in Zimbabwe’s governance landscape.

A MAN OF LIVINGSTONE WAS LEFT STUNNED AND HEARTBROKEN UPON HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT HIS WIFE HAD NOT ONLY BECOME PREGNANT, BUT HAD ALSO MARRIED ANOTHER MAN IN HIS ABSENCE

A MAN OF LIVINGSTONE WAS LEFT STUNNED AND HEARTBROKEN UPON HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT HIS WIFE HAD NOT ONLY BECOME PREGNANT, BUT HAD ALSO MARRIED ANOTHER MAN IN HIS ABSENCE

Watson Kachenjela, 35, of Livingstone, was granted a presidential pardon and released from prison on December 23, 2023 after serving only three of his five-year jail term for being in possession of a protected trophy in 2021.

Kachenjela said on his way to his matrimonial home after he was released, his younger brother, Kelvin Halando, informed him that his wife, Abigail Mudenda, 30, had married another man.

He was testifying in Livingstone Local Court A2 in a case in which he sued Mabvuto Lungu, 35, of Zambezi Sawmills in Livingstone, for K95,000 as compensation for “abducting” his wife.

“Fearing there would be a confrontation when I got home, my younger brother advised me not to go to my matrimonial house. I married Mudenda in 2014. I paid K2,700 out of the six animals that I was charged as bride price. We have one child together,” he said.

Mudenda admitted to both being pregnant for Lungu and having a child with Kachenjela. She, however, denied ever being married to Kachenjela saying he only proposed love to her in 2014.

Mudenda said from 2015 to date, Kachenjela had not paid anything despite his initial intent to formalise the marriage although he had continued communicating with her parents over the phone.

“So I moved on with my life and got married to another man. The house which Kachenjela left me in had also become small,” she said.

Mudenda also admitted that traditionally she is still considered to be married to Kachenjela, as her parents in Mumbwa consented to the union.

However, she said despite the documents which were signed between her parents and Kachenjela over the marriage, she was now married to Lungu.

“I knew he was in prison and when he was pardoned, I offered to pay him K4,000 or K5,000 as compensation so he can start a new life without me. But he refused the offer,” she said.

In his defence, Lungu said he was not aware Mudenda was married when they met.

“I was looking for a woman to marry. When I met Mudenda, I proposed and she accepted my proposal. We then started staying together. We are not formally married as I have not approached her parents yet,” he said.

Senior Local Court Magistrate Fredrick Mainza noted that traditionally Kachenjela and Mudenda were married because her parents consented to their marriage.

The case is adjourned to January 21, 2025.

Real Madrid fans slam one player after seeing Barcelona destroy them in Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid supporters have completely lost it with one player after seeing their side battered by Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

Don’t miss out! Get your daily dose of sports news straight to your phone. Join YEN’s Sports News channel on WhatsApp now!

Los Blancos went 1-0 in the El Clasico fixture in Saudi Arabia through Kylian Mbappe but Barcelona quickly took over and were 4-1 up and cruising at half-time courtesy of goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Alejandro Balde.

It was a total capitulation from the 15-time European champions, who conceded a fifth early on in the second half as Raphinha bagged his second before compatriot Rodrygo reduced the deficit for Real and made it 5-2.

And fans were absolutely furious with one player in particular. Aurelien Tchouameni, an £80 million signing from AS Monaco in 2022, was widely panned on social media for his display.

The France international is a defensive midfielder by trade but has been filling in at centre-back alongside Antonio Rudiger due to injuries in the backline.

He didn’t cover himself in glory with his defender for Yamal’s equaliser and plenty called out Ancelotti for persisting to play him in the position when they have young centre-back Raul Asencio on the bench.

At the same time, many have decided that Tchouameni is simply not good enough to play regularly for Real.

On X, one fan said: “I was so wrong about Tchouameni, this guy is one of the worst footballers I’ve ever seen.”

A second person commented: ‘I don’t care how many of you like Tchouaméni because of his Instagram posts or because he plays piano.”

A third added: “Tchouameni is a great player / profile but everytime I watch him over the last couple years he looks like the worst player ever

A fourth fumed: “He just isn’t good enough to play for Real Madrid every week. This has nothing to do with him playing out of position also, it was the same story when he was at CDM.”

Los Angeles fires deliver latest blow to embattled Hollywood

As Los Angeles is gripped by wildfires that resemble a Hollywood disaster movie, the city’s vast entertainment industry is already counting the costs of yet another drastic setback that its workers can ill-afford.

Actors, crew, writers and producers have lost their homes; film and

television productions have been temporarily halted; and calls are mounting for Hollywood’s award season to be canceled.

It comes with Los Angeles’s entertainment sector — worth $115 billion to the region’s economy — already in dire straits, as some film and TV productions abandon the city over high costs. The pandemic and recent labor upheavals have also taken their toll in recent years.

“Hollywood, as everyone, was hit by the pandemic with severe consequences. The strikes, obviously, affected the industry, probably forever,” said Marc Malkin, senior culture and events editor for trade magazine Variety.

Stars including Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson and Billy Crystal have lost their homes to the past week’s blazes.

But that is only the tip of the iceberg, with thousands of houses destroyed across a city that is home to 680,000 people employed in the entertainment industry or service jobs directly supporting it.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” “NCIS,” “Hacks” and “Fallout” are among more than a dozen Los Angeles-based TV productions that have seen their sets go dark since the fires broke out.

Parts of the city where major soundstages are located, including Burbank, were threatened by the fires, but have so far been spared.

But Film LA, which handles permissions for outdoor movie and TV shoots, warned producers working in or near evacuation zones to “expect to have your permit canceled,” and advised others that on-set safety supervisors would be in short supply.

With dense smoke and soot cloaking the entire region, even productions hoping to film further afield are affected.

“Add the fires to that, and Hollywood is just being hit over and over again.”

A former child star has d!ed in the devastating wildfires that have swept through Los Angeles.

The mother of Rory Callum Sykes, 32, released a heart-wrenching statement revealing her son’s de@th in a fire at his home.

It is believed Rory was trapped inside a self-contained cottage near Malibu when the fire broke out.

In an emotional interview with 10 News, his mother Shelley said: “I couldn’t put out the cinders on his roof with a hose because the water was switched off. When the fire department brought me back, his cottage was burnt to the ground. He will be incredibly missed.”

Reports suggest that Shelley had to drive a quarter of a mile in a desperate attempt to get help after she was unable to reach 911.

Tragically, firefighters later informed her that her son had d!ed from carbon monoxide poisoning, reports The Mirror.

Rory was known for hosting the British RTV show Kiddy Kapers back in 1998. Born blind and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Rory’s mother had previously spoken about how he had “overcome so much” in his life, including “therapies to regain his sight and to be able to learn how to walk”

Shelley Sykes, in a moving tribute to her son after his tragic death, wrote on Twitter/X, “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the de@th of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heart broken. British born Australian living in America, a wonderful son, a gift born on mine and his grandmas birthday 29 July 92, Rory Callum Sykes.”

She ended her heartfelt message with, “He will be incredibly missed by @shelleysykes, mama his pet peacocks Edgee and Mickie and all his online fans around the world!”

In response to Shelley’s post, fans and followers expressed their condolences.

BUSINESS MAN RUNS MAD AFTER MEETING HIS WIFE’S BOYFRIEND

Breaking News!!

BUSINESS MAN RUNS MAD AFTER MEETING HIS WIFE’S BOYFRIEND

A middle aged business man in Kapiri has today  been apprehended by the police after he allegedly attempted to end the life of his wife’s boyfriend.

According to the narratives available, a middle aged man identified as Kaluba Emmanuel, a renowned business man in Kapiri, today met his wife’s boyfriend at his shop.

The wife’s boyfriend came smartly dressed, the long sleeved shirt was nicely tacked into a navy blue  trousers which seemingly refused to be touched by his tiny body.

He walked into the hardware shop belonging to Mr. Kaluba and asked where the owner of the shop was since whenever he comes he finds the woman in question. Mr. Kaluba was a bit surprised but remembering he slept with countable bean seeds in the belly and needed money, he approached him and politely asked if he needed help.

The man turned to Mr. Kaluba and said, “I wanted to meet the owner of the shop. She is a beautiful lady and is usually found here.” He did not even give Mr. Kaluba time to respond. “I should probably call her,” he added, “by now we should be in Ndola.”

Mr. Kaluba’s heart beat was slowly losing the rhythm like, after seconds, he felt his bile had sunk straight into the bladder. Do you have a different number I can use to call her. I seem not to reach her on her line, you know Zesco.

These were the last words the man produced. What followed was a Y14 round bar across his face. Before he could reposition himself, his newspaper weight body was flying a meter high and landed together with a safety boot on the face.

Mr. Kaluba lifted his boot to hit the face for a second time but this time the man dodged and managed to come back to his feet. His shoes were not on, they probably flew away when his body was swayed.

He threw three punches aiming at Mr. Kaluba but missed them all. Mr. Kaluba’s face had turned gray, the sight of his wife with another man breaking sweet barriers was haunting him.

He was ready to kill. He continuously threw punches like an electric powered machine. The  man first blocked two punches, the third penetrated and kissed the left eye, pooooh!

Checking if the eye ball was still in the socket, another punch kissed the other eye then the left ear. The man could not see or hear anything. The finish him kick went straight to the area where the two legs meet and like the wall of Jericho, he fell slowly to the ground.

People were shouting ‘Amwipaya’ as they tried to get hold of Mr. Kaluba. The man was on the ground, his eyes were up. Luckily, Mr. Kaluba was pushed away by people. When the mob was still looking at the dying man, Mr. Kaluba was seen with a sack of cement coming to finish off his wife’s boyfriend.

Meanwhile, rumors are that the wife had told him she was going to Mushili in Ndola to see her sick mother.

Mr. Kaluba reportedly whipped anyone who got close to him with a round bar until the police came and locked him. The wife’s boyfriend is fighting for his life on the oxygen support machine.

Mnangagwa’s spokesman dismisses retirement rumours

0

George Charamba, spokesperson for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has dismissed rumours suggesting he has been forced to retire or removed from his position. Speculation arose amid significant changes within the government, following President Mnangagwa’s recent remarks about dismissing underperforming officials in 2025.

Speaking via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Charamba categorically denied the claims, affirming that he remains active in his role.

“I am not on holiday, have not been in the last decade or so. Currently, I am the Acting Chief Secretary until 10th January, when I pass on the acting baton to Reverend Damasane,” Charamba stated.

He also noted that ongoing regional developments were likely to keep him occupied, further dismissing any immediate plans for leave. Charamba criticised the media for spreading false reports, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy and fact-checking in their reporting.

The rumours of Charamba’s removal followed a wave of high-profile changes in Mnangagwa’s administration. These included the retirement of Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga, who was replaced by Stephen Mutamba, and the removal of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) Director-General Isaac Moyo. Fulton Mangwanya, former head of the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, was appointed as the new CIO Director-General.Starlink internet

Additionally, July Moyo was reassigned to the Energy Ministry, while Edgar Moyo took over the Labour and Public Service portfolio.

President Mnangagwa’s comments during a recent ZBC News interview about the need to remove underperforming officials in 2025 have intensified scrutiny of his administration and its leadership changes.

Some reports linked Charamba’s alleged dismissal to ZANU-PF factionalism, claiming pressure from the Mnangagwa family played a role in his supposed ousting. Others suggested Charamba had retired to his farm.

Charamba’s emphatic denial has sought to dispel these rumours, but the broader political climate remains tense. The reshuffle is widely seen as part of Mnangagwa’s strategy to consolidate power and align his team with his administration’s goals ahead of a critical period in 2025.

The ongoing government shake-up highlights Mnangagwa’s efforts to tighten his grip on key state institutions while navigating factional dynamics within ZANU-PF. As the President embarks on what appears to be a far-reaching restructuring process, speculation and political intrigue are likely to persist.

For now, Charamba’s position remains secure, with his denial adding clarity amid swirling rumours in Zimbabwe’s fast-changing political landscape.Starlink internet

The appetite by  HH to defile the constitution, rape the judiciary and undermine our  democracy is worrying and alarming- Edgar Lungu

0

Fellow Citizens.

Today is a sad day in the history of our country as we witness yet again, a another attempt by the President Hakainde Hichilema’s government to alter the course of democracy and good governance in our country to reverse another Constitutional Court decision.

You may all recall that in 2016 under my administration, Mr Hichilema and others challenged through the Concourt, a decision that allowed my cabinet ministers to remain in government and on payroll after the dissolution of parliament. Their argument was that the current constitution of Zambia requires legislators to relinquish their government positions as cabinet and provincial ministers once parliament is dissolved three months before the next Presidential and parliamentary elections.

In 2020, the Concourt ruled in their favour and we all complied and respected the decision.
Consequently, all Ministers in my cabinet  were compelled to refund the government all emoluments they received. The court emphasized that the law for ministers to leave government positions after the dissolution of the house is meant to ensure a fair political playing field for candidates within and outside parliament in the next national election.

Today, however, we have sadly read about a Lusaka lawyer challenging the Concourt decision and asking the same court to quash their earlier decision of 2020 on the same matter. From this president, this gesture is both shocking, annoying and disappointing for every Zambian because it is another high profiled assault of our judiciary, democracy and constitutionalism.

Ladies and gentlemen, WAKE UP and see that what happened on 10th December 2024 when the newly re-constituted Concourt took away my right to recontest the 2026 elections is about to recur through this Hichilema’s sponsored proxy. The appetite by President HH to defile the constitution, rape the judiciary and undermine our hard earned democracy is worrying and alarming!

I am appealing to every Zambian to stand up and be counted for once: employ all legal means possible including courts and peaceful demonstrations to stop this bogus court petition from the UPND executive because allowing it will undermine the principle of separation of powers and instantly kill our democracy.

I warned on 10th December. 2024 that “the decision to bar me then transcended the fate of Edgar Chagwa Lungu. It speaks to the erosion of judicial independence, the weaknesses of our democratic foundations, and the weaponization of our institutions for short term gains”.

Fellow Zambians, the country suffers and democracy dies when you choose to remain silent in the face of grave injustice.

Stop this NOW!

May God bless you all.

Kwacha performing better than other
currencies in Africa,  Musokotwane’s Pipedream

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

I’ve always maintained that Hon. Situmbeko Musokotwane is not fit for purpose and for a modern economy.

When he was appointed as Minister of Finance in 2008, he abolished the windfall tax in the mining sector, introduced by Ngandu Magande, an inaugural revenue-sharing mechanism that earned Zambia $600million in that year.

Musokotwane found an external debt of $500million in 2008 after a succesful debt write-off but by 2011 he had racked up and ballooned it to $2.8billion.

Upon his return in 2021, he found the non-deductible mineral royalty tax, with the sector earning an average of $1billion per annum since 2019. He litetally abolished the tax, and introduced tax and other incentives for the sector.

Now the sector brings in a paltry $300million per year, an outright robbery.

He abandoned the process to recover $2.5billion from First Quantum Minerals that had illegally externalised in 2010/2011, the money from Kansanshi Gold and Copper Mine. He dropped both the criminal charges against the FQM Directors, the legal case in the Lusaka High and the arbitration process in the London High Court.

He has not provided a parlthway to revover the money from FQM.

He has introduced some of the worst draconian foreign exchange regulations that have caused the Kwacha to tumble so much and lost significant value since 2021 that it is now consistently among the world’s worst-performing currency.

He is rapidly racking up debt again. He found an external debt of $11.9billion in August 2021, it’s now over $14.7billion. He found domestic debt of K178 billion but has ballooned it to K236billion.

But Musokotwane says the currency is doing far much better than most currencies in Africa, a self-serving dream he should wake up from.

President Hakainde Hichilema Rejects the Pope’s Offer to Have ZAMBIA’S DEBT CANCELLED this Jubilee Year 2025*- Kasonde Mwenda C – EFF President

12th January 2025

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are deeply disturbed and disappointed by the recent revelations surrounding *President Hakainde Hichilema’s diplomatic snubbing of Pope Francis’ offer to advocate for debt cancellation for Zambia.* This opportunity, rooted in the Vatican’s Jubilee Year tradition, presented a historic chance to alleviate Zambia’s crushing debt burden, a burden that has hindered development and perpetuated poverty for decades.

*The Pope’s Call for Jubilee Debt Cancellation:*
On 1st January 2025, following his traditional New Year’s Day Angelus prayer, Pope Francis made a heartfelt and powerful call to world leaders to cancel or significantly reduce the debts of poorer nations in this Jubilee Year. He urged nations, particularly those with Christian traditions, to set an example by extending forgiveness and relief to the most oppressed and indebted. This message was directly relayed to President Hakainde Hichilema on 31st December 2024 by the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia, Archbishop Gianluca Perici, during his visit to State House.

Regrettably, President Hichilema rejected this noble and timely offer, opting instead to focus on the existing G20 debt restructuring framework. The President cited his intention to pursue restructuring for investment rather than cancellation. This position demonstrates a myopic and regressive approach to resolving Zambia’s debt crisis and ignores the significant global influence of the Vatican and its allies in advocating for debt relief.

*A Missed Opportunity for Zambia:*
As the EFF, we are disheartened by the government’s failure to recognize the potential impact of the Vatican’s Jubilee Year advocacy. The Catholic Church, with its vast influence and moral authority across Europe and America, has the capacity to rally powerful stakeholders to cancel Zambia’s unsustainable debt. This opportunity comes only once every 25 years and aligns with the Catholic calendar’s emphasis on forgiveness and social justice. By refusing this chance, the UPND government has chosen to push Zambia’s repayment burden into the future, condemning future generations to a cycle of poverty and economic stagnation.

*The Precondition of Democratic Governance:*
It is worth noting that participation in the Jubilee Year debt cancellation initiative requires a commitment to upholding democratic principles and good governance. However, under President Hichilema’s leadership, Zambia has witnessed a sharp decline in democratic practices. The Judiciary remains compromised, the Police have been weaponized to suppress dissent, and opposition voices are silenced through arbitrary arrests and unlawful detentions.

For instance:

*Unlawful Detentions:* The prolonged detention of Elijah and Ernest Kaumba in Lusaka’s Ridgeway Police Station for over 62 days without charge is a glaring example of abuse of power. Similarly, the TikToker Francis Kapwepwe remains detained in an undisclosed location for alleged insults against the President.

*Disrespecting the Catholic Church:*
The UPND government has consistently undermined the Catholic Church, as seen in the offensive remarks by UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda, who referred to Archbishop Alick Banda as “Lucifer,” and the disgraceful locking of the Cathedral of the Child Jesus during the late President Michael Sata’s memorial service.

These actions are antithetical to the principles of democracy and justice, and they jeopardize Zambia’s eligibility for any meaningful support from the Vatican or its allies.

Our Demand for Change
The EFF strongly urges President Hichilema to reconsider his stance and embrace this once-in-a-generation opportunity for debt cancellation. This requires immediate action to restore democratic principles, including:

*Ending Political Oppression:*
Release all political prisoners, end arbitrary arrests, and ensure fair treatment for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.

*Restoring Judicial Independence:*
Allow the Judiciary to operate free from political interference and uphold the rule of law.

*Rebuilding Trust with the Catholic Church:* Apologize for the insults and injustices directed at the Catholic Church and commit to fostering mutual respect and collaboration.

*Engaging the Vatican:* Actively work with the Holy See to leverage its influence and secure debt relief for Zambia.

*Conclusion*
The refusal to pursue debt cancellation reflects a lack of vision and leadership from the UPND government. The EFF will not stand by as Zambia’s future is sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. We call on all Zambians to hold the government accountable and demand a course correction that prioritizes the well-being of the nation over partisan interests.

Let us not miss this opportunity to secure freedom from the chains of debt. The Jubilee Year calls for liberation, justice, and a commitment to a brighter future for all Zambians.

Wherever we want to go our feet will take us there.

Signed,
Kasonde Mwenda C

MORE MPs PRIORITIZING PERSONAL GAINS OVER PUBLIC SERVICE – MUKANDILA

….as he calls out selfish businessmen

Lusaka… Sunday January 12, 2025 ( Smart Eagles)

Celestine Mambula Mukandila, a Lusaka lawyer and Matero Strongman, has expressed disappointment over what he describes as a growing trend among members of Parliament prioritizing financial gain over their duty to serve their constituents.

Speaking candidly, Mukandila criticized the moral decay within the National Assembly, asserting that many MPs enter the legislature for personal benefits rather than the aspirations of the people who elect them.

He emphasized the need for reflection on the morality of both members of Parliament and society at large, urging a comparison with the principles of patriotism.

Mukandila reminded lawmakers that their primary role is to represent the interests of their constituents, not their selfish desires.

In his statement, Mukandila lamented that some MPs have abandoned their role of providing checks and balances on the Executive Arm of Government. Instead, they have reportedly aligned themselves with the Executive for personal gratification, which he equated to “selling their souls to the Devil.”

He criticized a section of MPs, stating that they are uninspiring and failing to uphold their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Mukandila advised them to redefine their purpose for seeking office.

He underscored the principles enshrined in Zambia’s Constitution, particularly the separation of powers, which requires the Legislature to enact laws and oversee the Executive.

According to him, patriotism and service to the people should take precedence over financial incentives.

Mukandila further stressed the importance of maintaining integrity and resisting the temptation of government favors.

He urged MPs to prioritize serving the nation and protect the Constitution, expressing sadness over the perceived neglect of these duties.

He accused many MPs of becoming “selfish businessmen” who ignore constitutional violations by the current regime, thus failing to defend the nation’s interests.

He concluded by attributing Zambia’s persistent poverty, despite its wealth of natural resources, to a leadership lacking patriotism, morality, and integrity.

He accused the current leadership of succumbing to multinational control in exchange for personal embellishments, which he described as deeply disappointing.

The statement serves as a call to action for leaders and aspiring lawmakers to restore integrity, morality, and patriotism in the governance of the nation.

A Polished Widow and the Broken Traditions of Mourning

“A Polished Widow and the Broken Traditions of Mourning”

By Linda Banks ©

There she stood — radiant, dignified, and composed. The widow of a beloved pastor, Moses Chiluba, stood behind the pulpit to deliver her tribute. Draped in a regal outfit, with her face graced by immaculate makeup and lips painted a bold red, Victoria Chiluba’s image stirred a country that prides itself on solemn funeral rituals.

In Zambia, funerals are sacred rites of passage, steeped in tradition. Mourning is meant to be raw, public, and physically evident. The bereaved are expected to carry visible signs of grief: red eyes from tears, disheveled hair, and somber clothing. A widow is often expected to be broken, subdued, and withdrawn — a walking emblem of loss. But when a widow appears polished, standing tall, and speaking boldly at her husband’s funeral, the whispers begin.

“She even had time to do makeup,” murmured one attendee.

“Already moved on,” scoffed a Facebook commentator.

This critique reflects an unspoken rule in Zambian society: grief must be performative. It must be visible to be valid. And nowhere is this expectation more rigorously enforced than in the case of widows.

There is an unwritten script for widows in Zambia. First, they must be crushed under the weight of their loss. Their physical appearance should reflect their inner devastation — no makeup, no bright colors, no signs of self-care. They are expected to wail openly, collapse from grief, and refuse to speak, as though their vocal cords, too, were severed by death’s cruel hand. Any deviation from this script invites judgment.

But what does this say about us as a society?

Grief is deeply personal. It manifests in different ways, yet we insist on packaging it into a single, recognizable template. A widow who wears makeup at her husband’s funeral is seen as disrespectful or unfeeling. But why should a woman lose her dignity and self-presentation along with her spouse? Why should grief erase her identity and humanity?

Perhaps the discomfort stems from our cultural fixation on suffering as a marker of authenticity. In Zambia, people often equate visible hardship with virtue. The more visibly broken you are, the more genuine your grief appears. A polished widow disrupts this narrative. She challenges the idea that mourning must strip a person of their composure.

Victoria Chiluba’s tribute was brief but powerful. “I am broken, I am beaten, but I am not out because the Lord is with me.” Her words revealed a truth that the audience seemed unwilling to accept — that resilience and grief can coexist. A widow can mourn deeply while maintaining her dignity. She can weep in private and present a composed face to the world. She can wear red lipstick and still carry a shattered heart.

The backlash against her appearance speaks volumes about our society’s discomfort with women who defy expectations. A grieving widow is expected to be silent and invisible. But Victoria Chiluba’s boldness unsettled people. She addressed dignitaries, including the president, with grace and authority. In doing so, she reclaimed her voice in a space where widows are often voiceless.

One Facebook commentator remarked, “Only those who lose everything that comes with their spouse mourn deeply. Those who benefit mourn like they’ve lost nothing.” This bitter statement reveals another layer of societal judgment — the assumption that widows who stand strong must be motivated by personal gain.

But grief is not a performance. It is not a spectacle for public consumption. And it is certainly not a competition to determine who is the most broken.

Perhaps it’s time we let widows grieve on their own terms.

Let them cry. Let them wear makeup. Let them speak. Let them mourn in silence. Let them shout their tributes from the rooftops. Let them be human.

Because, in the end, grief looks different on everyone. And dignity, even in mourning, is not a crime.

PASTOR CHILUBA WAS MORE THAN A BIG MACHINE – WIDOW

PASTOR CHILUBA WAS MORE THAN A BIG MACHINE – WIDOW

As she stood at the pulpit to eulogize her late husband yesterday, mama Victoria cracked some people’s ribs a little bit with her humor as she proudly confessed that Pastor Moses Chiluba was more than a big machine, further describing him as a mukango (lion).

Despite saying she was not one who believes in giving a tribute about a husband, the widow failed to resist telling the crowd that she loved the late husband dearly.

She added that it was like the two had one heartbeat.

“What we lived and what we shared remains between the two of us. But I’d love to say this, we loved each other dearly, it’s like we had one heartbeat. We knew what God had called us for,” she said.

She also disclosed that she got married to the pastor at a time it was not fashionable for parents to allow their daughters to get married to pastors.

Mama Victoria attributed this to insinuations by people in society that pastors were among the poor of the poorest.

“It was not popular at that time to marry a pastor; It was not popular. And many of you who have lived long will attest to that. It was not popular because the men of God were considered the poorest of the poor. They were a laughing stock,” she said.

“Having had a background that people would consider poor, my husband came from a wealth family because of the good morals that my father and mother in-law instilled in my husband.”

She also recalled what kind of man he was when they just met.

“When I met him, he was a ka man, he was so thin. But the Lord started doing his thing and from a ka man he became a man and now he has become a chi man, a mukango (lion). He became more than a big machine. I love this man, I still do, believe me,” she said.

“He still loved the Lord till his last breath. He was a human being.”

ZRA POLICIES ARE HURTING BUSINESSES: A CALL FOR CHANGE

By Nkonkomalimba Kapumpe.

ZRA POLICIES ARE HURTING BUSINESSES: A CALL FOR CHANGE.

Tax Clearance Certificate

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) is one of the few institutions in the country that demands money from you while preventing you from earning it. By withholding Tax Clearance Certificates, ZRA effectively stops businesses from operating or participating in tenders for serious contracts.

Beside imposing compliance before Tax clearance is issued goes contrary to what ZRA pledged to Parliament in early 2000s,  when the Tax clearance Certificate  law was being reintroduced.

In a parliamentary committee sitting, ZRA committed to not ever use obtaining a TCC (Tax clearance Certificate) as a compliance measure. The idea of TCC was to ensure that the authority would have a way of knowing who to focus on as an active taxpayer.

It is also a lazy way of collecting taxes thereby challenging the existence of a bloated workforce failing to collect taxes by engaging taxpayers in actual business settings and see challenges first hand.

But new Managing Director  Dingani Banda is choosing a comfortable and  easier method where he  holding a whip in his right hand. In short, can the Minister of finance Situmbeko Musokotwane   kanshi withdraw the huge enforcement budget allocated to ZRA and redirect that to paying debt to local suppliers since ZRA has found a magic cheap method of collecting taxes.

In this struggling economy, it is counterproductive to block over 5,000 companies this January from conducting business. Such policies are not only illogical but also detrimental to economic growth.

Unreasonable Penalties

The penalties imposed by ZRA are another glaring issue. For example, a small Zambian business struggling to stay afloat may generate an annual revenue of K150,000. Yet, ZRA might impose penalties of K300,000 on top of the actual tax owed. Is this a rational system? Penalties should never exceed the principal tax owed. They should be a reasonable percentage of the principal amount, not an amount that crushes small businesses. Ladies and Gentlemen we are not in a development country that we just copy and paste tax police’s.

Imagine you  owing K50,000 in taxes but facing penalties up to K300,000. This creates a hostile business environment and discourages entrepreneurship—especially in Africa, where we need to nuture local businesses, not suffocate them.

Gnashing

The situation is worse when you are doing business with parastatals, Government agencies and  departments. Profit margins in Zambia typically range from 10% to 35%, especially with the introduction of  Market Pricing Index . Yet ZRA’s gnashes or takes up an unrealistic 40% to pay for penalties,  leaving businesses struggling to survive.

For instance, if you borrow K120,000 to buy a car for K100,000 and sell it for K140,000 to government , you make a modest K20,000 profit. But when ZRA takes or gnashes  K50,000 from penalties , you’re left with no profit and no means to repay your debtors. This is unsustainable for businesses, it like kalaba now.

It’s time to rethink the way taxes are collected in Zambia. We need a system that aligns with our culture and economic realities. Perhaps collecting taxes directly through banks could be a more efficient and business-friendly approach. It’s counterproductive to make businesses lose their ability to operate when they’re the very source of the revenue you need.

The same way ZRA called almost each and every company to train and  register on Smart invoices; you can also do the same to resolve Tax clearance Certificate for small simple businesses. Those Ladies and Gentlemen who helped us with smart invoicing were sharp, so that people start doing business.

ZRA must understand that supporting businesses and creating a conducive environment for growth will ultimately result in higher tax revenues. Crushing businesses with illogical penalties and policies only hurts the economy in the long run.

Ba Dingani Banda help us please, you are killing us.

CHIEF MPEZENI IMPRESSED WITH ZNS EFFORTS, SEEKS SUPPORT FOR MTENGULENI ARENA EXPANSION AHEAD OF NC’WALA CEREMONY

CHIEF MPEZENI IMPRESSED WITH ZNS EFFORTS, SEEKS SUPPORT FOR MTENGULENI ARENA EXPANSION AHEAD OF NC’WALA CEREMONY

Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni People in Eastern Province has praised the Zambia National Service (ZNS) for its significant contributions to national development, especially in the agricultural sector.

The Traditional Leader cited the cultivation of maize and the sale of subsidized Eagle mealie meal by ZNS lower than what was obtaining on the Zambian market as some of the notable initiatives that have significantly helped to alleviate hunger in the country.

He said this when the ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II and his delegation paid a courtesy call on him at Mtenguleni Palace on Thursday before proceeding to inspect ongoing projects.

“I am impressed with the proactive steps ZNS has taken to assist Government to alleviate hunger, especially in the face of drought,” Chief Mpezeni said.

He added “I want to thank Government in particular the Republican President and Commander in-Chief of the Defence Force Mr Hakainde Hichilema for being proactive in providing Relief food to the people that were affected by drought, I also want to encourage Government to continue with the good agricultural programme,”.

In light of ZNS’s remarkable work, Chief Mpezeni turned to the Service for assistance with the expansion and beautification of the Mtenguleni main arena in preparation for next month’s Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony.

He said the request for the expansion of the main arena was to ensure that the facility was adequately sized to accommodate the large number of attendees expected at the ceremony.

“The arena is currently too small and, frankly, somewhat embarrassing given the significance of the event. We are expecting a large number of people at the ceremony hence we therefore appeal for your help to expand the space in time for the event,” Chief Mpezeni explained.

And Chief Mpenzi was elated that ZNS had initiated the construction of the Muzipasi dam in Luangeni Constituency, emphasizing that it would greatly benefit both people and livestock.

The Traditional leader noted that the construction of the Muzipasi dam, along with other similar projects in the province, was crucial for water harvesting.

These initiatives, he explained, would help mitigate the effects of drought by providing sufficient water for irrigation and other essential uses.

Chief Mpezeni said he was confident with the works of ZNS and other Service Wings in assisting Government develop the nation and ensuring peaceful environment continued to prevail in the country.

He also commended the strong and collaborative relationship among the Defence and Security Wings, urging other traditional leaders and stakeholders to draw inspiration from the unity and cooperation.

In response, Lt Gen Solochi assured the Chief that the Service would prioritize the expansion project to ensure it is completed ahead of the ceremony.

He further directed the Land Development Branch (LDB) to promptly assess the cost implications to expedite the process.
“We will follow the President’s directive on water harvesting to the latter. The dams under construction will be completed on time to support irrigation and other essential uses,” Lt Gen Solochi said.

Speaking to journalists after inspecting the said dam, the ZNS Commander directed the Chief of LDB to accelerate the work on the non-perennial stream to ensure effective water harvesting.

“I am impressed with the progress on the dams so far. As ZNS, we will ensure the President’s directive on water harvesting is fully implemented this year to prevent drought-related challenges,” he added.

US RETURNS $50M IN ALLEGED STOLEN FUNDS TO NIGERIA

US RETURNS $50M IN ALLEGED STOLEN FUNDS TO NIGERIA

Close to $53m (£43m) in alleged illicit funds recovered from Nigeria’s former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke among others will be used to fund public services, the country’s justice ministry says.

The money is being sent back to Nigeria from the US, whose authorities allege that Alison-Madueke enriched herself, and others, while leading Nigeria’s state oil firm by awarding contracts in exchange for bribes.

The US alleged that the money was then used to buy a 65-metre superyacht called the Galactica Star plus multiple luxury properties in California and New York.

Alison-Madueke, 64, has always denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Her alleged ill-gotten gains are also under scrutiny in the UK, where two years ago she was charged with bribery offences including gifts of Louis Vuitton luxury goods, payment of private school fees, and at least $127,000 in cash.

A key figure in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, she also served as the first female president of the oil exporters group Opec.

Her time as Nigeria’s minister of petroleum resources began in 2010 and ended in 2015. She previously served as transport minister, and the minister for solid minerals and steel development.

The US Department of Justice announced in 2023 the final resolution of two civil cases on the forfeiture of assets that were reportedly laundered in and through the US by Alison-Madueke and her associates.

On Friday, the US and Nigeria confirmed that the sum of $52.88m would be repatriated to the West African nation.

This will be the first repatriation to Nigeria of assets outside the West African country linked to Alison-Madueke, the Reuters news agency reports.

Speaking at the formal signing ceremony in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said the return of the funds marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption.

Fagbemi said $50m of the money will go through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, and the remaining $2.88m will be directed to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and promote anti-corruption efforts.

Meanwhile the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has emphasised the need for accountability as well as the careful monitoring of the returned funds.

“The ministry of justice must guarantee that these funds are used transparently and effectively to improve the lives of Nigerians,” he said.

In November 2022, the US government repatriated to Nigeria, $20.6m in assets allegedly stolen by former Nigerian military leader Gen Sani Abacha.

Five years ago, Washington transferred $311.8m to the Nigerian government as part of a previous agreement to repatriate assets that traced back to the Abacha regime. [BBC]

Zulu Queen  heads to court to stop her husband, King Misuzulu, from marrying another woman

AmaZulu Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela has filed a court application to stop her husband, King Misuzulu, from marrying another woman, arguing that such a marriage would be unlawful under South African law.

The application, submitted to the high court on Friday, follows reports that King Misuzulu plans to wed his third wife, Queen Nomzamo Myeni, later this month. According to TimesLIVE, the king will perform umkhehlo, a traditional ceremony where the families exchange vows, at Queen Myeni’s home in Jozini on January 24, followed by a traditional wedding ceremony led by the Nazareth Baptist Church two days later.

The king’s spokesperson, Prince Simphiwe Zulu, confirmed the dates for the “historic” wedding, which comes amid the monarch’s ongoing divorce proceedings with Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela.

In her court application, kaMayisela stated that she and the king were married in a civil union and that their marriage was in community of property. She argued that the king had already begun arrangements to marry another woman and had even set a date for the marriage.

“I humbly submit that the respondent (Misuzulu) herein cannot enter into a civil marriage and/or a customary marriage while our civil marriage still subsists,” kaMayisela stated in her court papers.

She further argued that South African law prohibits a person married under civil law from entering into multiple marriages simultaneously.

“I humbly submit that should the respondent proceed with the arrangement and the ceremony as he intends, he will be committing bigamy and will also be entering into a marriage that is null and void under South African law. It is my humble submission that this honourable court is empowered to stop the respondent from committing the offence of bigamy,” she added.

The court’s decision on the matter is awaited as the royal family faces increasing public attention over the legal and cultural implications of the king’s planned marriage.
