On 29th December,1991 Second President of the Republic of Zambia declared the country as a Christian Nation

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba writes:

Declaring Zambia as a Christian Nation

On 29th October,1991 at the footsteps of State House, Second President of the Republic of Zambia declared the country as a Christian Nation.

This was his declaration;

“Dear God, as a nation, we now come to your throne of Grace and we humble ourselves and admit our guilt.”

“We repent from all our wicked ways of idolatry, witchcraft, the occult, immorality, injustice and corruption, and all other sins that have violated your righteous laws.”

“We turn away from all this and renounce it all in Jesus name. We ask for your forgiveness dear Father and cleansing through the blood of Jesus.”

“Therefore, we thank you that you will heal our land. We pray that you will send healing, restoration, revival, blessings, and prosperity to Zambia, in the name of Jesus, Amen.”

“On behalf of the nation, we have now entered into a covenant with the living God, and, therefore, I want to make the following declaration.”

“I declare today that I submit myself as President to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I, likewise, submit the government and the entire nation of Zambia to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.”

“I, further, declare that Zambia is a Christian Nation to be govermed by the righteous principles of the Word of God. Righteousness and justice must pr il in all levels of authority, and then we shall see the righteousness of God”

“My fellow Zambians, let this message reach all civil servants in all government departments. The time for corruption and bribery is over. For too long, these wicked practices have been destroying and tearing down the nation.”

“Now, the hour has come for our building up. The hour has come for stability, for Proverbs 29:4 declares that one who is for bribes tears down the nation, but by justice, a King or a President gives the country stability.”

“The book of Romans 13:11 urges us to understand the present time as the hour has come for us to wake up from our slumber because our salvation is nearly over and the day is almost here.”

“So, let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light.”

“Fellow countrymen, fellow Zambians, a new dawn has come to Zambia. May God bless and help us all to live according to His righteous laws.”

In 1996, the Declaration was included in the preamble of the Constitution.

In 2016, the amended Constitution has strengthened the declaration and national values and principles were included in the Constitution as justiciable.

Further a special session address of Parliament was prescribed compelling the President of the Republic of Zambia to report to Parliament once a year, on the progress made by Government on the application of national values and principles.

2024 DISASTROUS FOR ZAMBIANS – KUNDA

2024 DISASTROUS FOR ZAMBIANS – KUNDA

Zawapa – Zambia wake-up Party President Howard Miselo Kunda has described 2024 as a disaster owing to many challenges affecting the people.

He cited poverty, power deficit, high cost of living and unstable fuel prices as things that made the year terrible for majority Zambians.

Featuring on Millennium Radio in Lusaka, Mr. Kunda said Government leaders should take the blame over the untold misery the people are going through.

The opposition leader accused the New Dawn administration of failing to provide solutions to various economic and social problems Zambia is currently grappling with.

Mr. Kunda said drought is not an excuse for the misery Zambians are going through because the Government needed to find solutions after being warned of dry weather in advance.

“The people of Zambia have been suffering and the Government has been seen not reacting to some of those problems affecting them. My description of this year, I think it has been more of a disaster than anything else because we have seen so much suffering that we have never seen in the history of this country,” Mr. Kunda said.

“There are so many issues that have befallen this country and one would say it is because we have not been putting God first. As ZAWAPA we have been on record telling this Government, telling the President that we should put God first. I would describe this year as a regrettable year for this country, which has everything to develop and advance the lives of its people. But we want to tell our people that freedom is coming, they shouldn’t relent from hoping and supporting the younger generation to take up the mantle so our people can drive benefit for the current and future generations,” he said.

Mr. Kunda charged that the UPND administration formed Government on the basis of lying and misleading people that it would rule better than the PF.

He said hardships among Zambians have worsened under the UPND regime.

“And for us, it is not about lip service. It is not about just talking. We want to put action on our talking so whatever we say we must be mindful as politicians, as opposition and as Government because we have seen that this government came as a result of making so many misleading statements that they have failed to live up to and the people, out there, are suffering as a result.

“So we need to look at these things and, all in all, I think that the people have suffered, we have suffered injustice. When you talk about the way things are being run, one would say that it has been a disaster of a year for Mother Zambia,” Mr. Kunda said.

He warned the UPND administration against thinking that they would easily retain power in 2026.

“Everyone should get involved in the developmental agenda for Zambia. People want to benefit from putting UPND into power. They are saying no one will remove us from pa mupando but  it’s the peoples decision who will govern Zambia in 2026,” he observed.

DORA’S DEATH IS SUSPECTED POISONING-FAMILY

Dear Friends, Followers and Colleagues of Dora Moono Nyambe, Against everything we believe in as a family regarding matters of loss of anyone one of us we have been compelled to issues this statement that seeks to to set the record straight regarding the social media commentaries that have so far been propelled by some known social media dwellers who have sort to creat an impression that we as the family of Dora Nyambe are trying to take possession of any form of property belonging to our deceased beloved or the foundation that she established out of her pure desire to save young children in distress by providing a safe haven for them.

We only but share the same desire as all well meaning associates of Dora who wish to see her legacy live on thereby ensuring that all her works and achievements are accounted for.

For those who may wish to know the unclear circumstances that led to Dora’s death that has prompted us as family to call for a full autopsy (postmortem):

So far reports we have gathered here in Mkushi indicate that the death of our beloved Dora Moono Nyambe follows a Christmas party that was held at the Foot Prints of Hope School premises. On that  fateful night, Dora attended a party with her friends and workmates afterwhich she reportedly went to bed where she later developed severe stomach pains which resulted in her driving herself to the nearest health center at around 03:00hours in morning. As a result of the severity of her stomach pains she unfortunately died shortly after reaching the center before the health personnel could even attend to her. Despite this account that has been repeated by a few ‘friends’ who were present at the said party, the death certificate acquired from the Health Center indicates that Dora was Brought In Dead (BID) a fact that only raises further questions.

These unclear and highly suspicious circumstances surrounding her death have prompted us as a family and other well meaning associates to ask questions that can only be adequately answered by the conducting of a postmortem by a competent and credible expert.

In a time of death, every clan/family subjects itself to certain traditional customs that must be respected at all times such as the fact that: After the demise of anyone of us, individuals who were present must be able to give account of how the deceased met their end, upon giving a satisfactory account that is consistent with the findings of the postmortem the family will proceed to perform the burial rites and put the deceased to rest.

Devoid of the above procedure being followed burial cannot take place at any given time or place.

The position of the family is such that everything about Dora Moono Nyambe must be harmonized to an extent that her dream and legacy lives on, that her establishments continue to impact the lives of those in need even if the vision is carried on by people unrelated to Dora.

The family will not exert any personal interest except that we register our displeasure with the manner in which a named friend or friends who were allegedly present at the time of Dora’s unfortunate demise took her mobile phone and other personal effects and have elected to only keep in touch with the outside world and sharing updates on Dora’s personal social media platforms, a somewhat “Business as Usual “ attitude despite the family and other stakeholders making numerous attempts to have them come to the house of mourning so as to help harmonize all matters the deceased, her works and circumstances that led to her death.

Please note that from here on now the family will communicate all information regarding Dora’s funeral and burial through and appointed through this platform and other credible media outlets.

Man planning to propose on New Year’s Eve d!es in house fire while searching for the ring

An American man who was planning to propose to his girlfriend on New Year’s Eve d!ed during a Christmas Day house fire after searching for the engagement ring.

According to FOX affiliate KTVU, Oakland fire crews were alerted to the blaze in the 3500 block of Oak Knoll Boulevard around 6:15 a.m. local time on Wednesday, December 25.

Firefighters who were searching the home eventually found the man unconscious inside.

The victim has been identified by relatives as 37-year-old Steven Weatherford Jr., according to KTVU and FOX affiliate KGO.

Weatherford was reportedly looking for an engagement ring when he was apparently overcome by the smoke and fire. Family said he was planning on using the ring to propose to his girlfriend on New Year’s Eve.

LaShante Mayo, Weatherford’s girlfriend, said her late boyfriend “was truly the best person you could ever meet,” according to KTVU.

“He loved his family, his friends, everybody so much,” added Mayo, who was unaware that he was planning to propose until the day of the fatal blaze.

Weatherford lived in Antioch and was visiting family in Oakland when the fire broke out, according to KTVU.

The home involved in the fire belongs to his father Steven Weatherford Sr., according to a GoFundMe campaign started by the man’s neighbors.

“He was trying to save everybody and make sure everybody was out of the house. He may not have known they all went out the back,” said Weatherford’s aunt, Eunice Smith, according to KGO.

“And my other nephew was calling for him because they were all in the back,” Smith continued, “and they were calling, ‘Steven! Steven! Come out! Come out!’ and they heard him screaming. And he never made it out.”

Michael Hunt of the Oakland Fire Department (OFD) said the fire appears to have been accidental, according to KTVU.

South Africans Outraged as Mozambican Child Smuggler Gets Just 6 Months for Trafficking 14 Girls

South Africans Outraged as Mozambican Child Smuggler Gets Just 6 Months for Trafficking 14 Girls

South Africans have erupted with outrage after a Mozambican national was handed what many consider a lenient sentence for smuggling 14 children into the country.

Moises Armando Mate, a 32-year-old Mozambican, was convicted of child smuggling and sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R6,000 fine. The sentence was wholly suspended for three years, provided he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

Mate was caught on December 4 while driving a minibus loaded with 14 girls aged between 4 and 16. He was stopped by the Border Management Authority on the N4 and handed over to Komatipoort police.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi explained,

“Mate and the girls were handed over to Komatipoort police, and the case of aiding and abetting was registered. The girls were handed over to the Department of Social Development for assessment before they were sent back to their country of origin.”

After several court appearances, Mate pleaded guilty to child smuggling charges and received a suspended sentence.

“He was sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option to pay R6,000 fine, which was wholly suspended for a period of three years on condition that during the three years, he does not commit a similar offence, he must not be found unlawfully assisting any person(s) to enter, remain or depart South Africa,” Nkosi added.

However, the public reaction has been one of disbelief and anger. Many South Africans expressed frustration over what they see as a slap on the wrist for such a serious crime. Here are some comments from social media:

@rudz_16:

This is nonsense of a sentence and lacks the deterrent effect. SA is playful

@ManKooldeni:

premier
6 months for 14 children?? Kanti what are SA judges smoking guys?? 😭😭

@anashreek:

He can do this repeatedly

@ThabangWaLona:

I come across with some of them often, almost daily right in around Jhb. I would say, prima facie case, that must be seriously addressed before it is causing civil conflict!!!!

I just hope that I am wrong on this 🤔

“I am here up to 2030” – President Lazarus Chakwera

In a bold statement that has sparked heated discussions across Malawi, President Lazarus Chakwera recently declared, “I am here up to 2030.”

The declaration, made with the confidence of someone secure in their political future, raises questions about Malawi’s political landscape and the aspirations of its leadership.

However, there are murmurs of doubt from the public, with some questioning whether the country will be led by Chakwera until 2030 or if a new leadership will emerge sooner than anticipated.

Chakwera’s words come amid a challenging political environment where many feel that his leadership is not meeting the expectations of the populace. His administration, though ambitious in some aspects, faces mounting criticisms related to economic management, corruption, and unfulfilled promises.

Despite this, Chakwera’s proclamation reflects a determined belief in his ability to lead Malawi through to the end of his current term, potentially up until 2030.

However, the reactions from some corners of the country tell a different story. Critics argue that Chakwera’s presidency may not last as long as he anticipates.

These voices reflect scepticism about his leadership and call for a change of guard come September 2025. Many citizens, disillusioned by economic hardships and political controversies, believe that by the next general elections, it will be time for a new leader to take charge.

A particular point of contention has been the involvement of Smartmatic, the election technology company. Some argue that Chakwera’s faith in Smartmatic’s systems to ensure his victory may be misplaced, especially if voters decide to back another candidate for president.

Critics of the current regime suggest that while Chakwera’s commitment to Smartmatic might be strategic, it will not guarantee him the presidency in 2025. Whether Smartmatic can indeed be relied upon to secure Chakwera’s political future remains a topic of heated debate.

While Chakwera remains confident in his future, others predict a political shift by 2025. Calls for a new leader are growing louder, with the belief that one term of leadership may be enough.

This sentiment is echoed by voices in the opposition, as well as by a segment of the public, who feel that after a term marked by economic struggles and dissatisfaction, it might be time for fresh leadership.

Whether or not Chakwera’s political journey ends in 2025 is uncertain, but many are already looking ahead to the possibility of a different president.

One thing seems clear: political change is inevitable. Malawi, like many countries, is in a constant state of flux, and the people’s demands for change cannot be ignored. The notion of Chakwera remaining at the helm until 2030 may seem optimistic to some, while others question whether his days in office are indeed numbered.

However, what is certain is that the future of Malawi’s leadership will ultimately rest with the people, as they prepare to make their voices heard in the coming elections.

As Chakwera’s tenure continues, the political landscape of Malawi remains unpredictable. While his declaration of being “here up to 2030” reflects a firm resolve, it is the people’s will that will ultimately shape the direction of the nation.

Regardless of whether Chakwera stays in power or a new president emerges by 2025, the winds of change are already blowing, and Malawians will have the final say in the leadership that shapes their future. The journey to 2025, and possibly beyond, is sure to be an exciting and unpredictable one.

UK Prime Minister ‘behaving like Robert Mugabe’- Reform UK leader Nigel Farage

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has accused Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of “behaving like Robert Mugabe” amid further claims that the Government is considering postponing local elections scheduled for the Spring.

Mugabe, who served as President of Zimbabwe for 30 years, became notorious for putting off democratic elections. He was eventually ousted in 2017 in what was widely regarded as a coup d’etat.Starlink internet

Reports last week suggested that the Labour government, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, is considering the controversial move as part of a shake-up of local government.

And a recent report in The Times suggested Essex County Council elections, as well as those in the unitary boroughs of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, were “almost certain to be postponed”.

A leaked Thurrock Council report says that “as a consequence of participation in the Government Devolution Priority Programme the Leader and Chief Executive approve a letter to the Secretary of State asking to postpone local elections to be held on May 1, 2025″.

The GB News host, whose own seat, Clacton, is likewise in Essex, wasted little time making his feelings plain as he shared the news on X.

He commented: “This is outrageous. Keir Starmer is behaving like Robert Mugabe.”

The reforms, aimed at restructuring councils and enhancing devolution across England, are being spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

They involve merging or disbanding existing councils to create more streamlined and efficient local governance structures.

Local Government Minister Jim McMahon has acknowledged that elections in areas undergoing reorganisation might be deferred.

He explained that if a council is set to be restructured and will not exist in its current form for the full term following the elections, it is customary to postpone the elections and instead elect a ‘shadow body’ to oversee the transition.

Such an approach aims to prevent electing representatives to councils that are on the verge of significant structural changes.

The Government has not yet provided a definitive list of councils that will be affected by the postponements.

The situation remains fluid, with further details expected to emerge as the government continues to outline its devolution agenda and local government restructuring plans.

Stakeholders and the public await more comprehensive information to understand the full implications of these proposed changes on local democracy.

A Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: “No decisions have been taken to postpone elections in specific areas.

At least 167 killed in S Korea as plane crashes on landing at Muan airport

0

At least 167 people have been killed when a passenger plane caught fire after skidding off a runway and crashing at an airport in South Korea’s Muan city, the country’s National Fire Agency said.

The accident occurred on Sunday at 9.03am local time (00:03 GMT) as the Jeju Air flight, carrying 175 passengers and six crew from the Thai capital Bangkok, landed at Muan International Airport located about 289km (179 miles) southwest of the capital Seoul.

The National Fire Agency confirmed that 167 people – 79 men, 77 women and 11 others whose genders weren’t immediately identifiable – have been killed, and two people have been rescued – both crew members. The fire that engulfed the plane has been extinguished, the agency said.

Citing fire agency officials, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said that hopes are fading for survivors.

“There seems to have been some kind of malfunction with the landing gear and images which have been on the media here do appear to show the plane landing on its belly, skidding along the runway, followed then by a huge explosion,” Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride, reporting from Seoul, said.

“Eyewitness accounts have talked then about a series of explosions and certainly images that we have been seeing have shown a catastrophic fire,” he said.

The plane, a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet, was reported to be carrying two Thai passengers and the rest were believed to be South Koreans.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has expressed deep condolences to the families of the crash victims.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been ordered to investigate if Thai passengers were on the plane and to provide “assistance immediately”, the prime minister said in a post on social media.

One photo shared by local media showed thick clouds of black smoke coming out of the plane. Another showed the tail section of the jet engulfed in flames on what appeared to be the side of the runway, with firefighters and emergency vehicles nearby.

The Yonhap news agency reports that the crash is believed to have been caused by “contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear” as the plane attempted to land at the airport.

The country’s News1 agency reported that a passenger texted a relative to say a bird was stuck in the wing. The person’s final message was, “Should I say my last words?”

An official from South Korea’s Transport Ministry’s aviation department said a bird strike was among several theories for the accident that have not been verified and that an investigation was ongoing.

South Korea’s Acting President Choi Sang-mok, meanwhile, ordered “all-out efforts for rescue operations” at Muan airport.

“All related agencies… must mobilise all available resources to save the personnel,” he told officials in a statement.

Jeju Air, one of South Korea’s largest low-cost carriers, which was set up in 2005, issued an apology for the crash, saying it would “do everything in our power in response to this accident”.

The crash is the first fatal accident for Jeju Air, though in August 2007, a Bombardier Q400 operated by the airline and carrying 74 passengers came off the runway due to strong winds at the southern Busan-Gimhae airport, resulting in a dozen injuries.

Experts say that South Korea’s aviation industry has a solid track record for safety.

Man arrested for demanding to see Mnangagwa

A 40-year-old Harare man, Felix Togaraseyi Magureyi, has been arrested for the second time this year after attempting to force his way into State House on December 23, demanding to see President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This incident occurred just two days before Christmas, following a similar attempt in May.

Magureyi, who drove a Toyota Hilux Raider (registration number AFU 0592), arrived at the State House visitor’s entrance around 1:00 p.m. He confronted police officers on duty and insisted on seeing the President. It is unclear why he wished to meet Mnangagwa.

The State alleges that Magureyi, after being refused entry, overpowered a police officer and forcibly entered the premises. Witnesses at the scene are expected to testify about the incident, and security camera footage capturing Magureyi’s actions will be presented in court as evidence.

This is not Magureyi’s first attempt to breach State House security. Earlier this year, on May 7, he was arrested for the same offense. In that incident, Magureyi, who also drove the same vehicle, approached a police officer at the visitor’s entrance and claimed he was President Mnangagwa’s son, demanding to be let in. Police later discovered weapons in his vehicle, including a pistol magazine, ammunition, a communication radio, a sjambok, and a toy firearm.

Magureyi now faces charges of trespassing. He appeared before Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga, who remanded him in custody until January 7, 2025. Taruvinga ordered that Magureyi undergo a mental health evaluation by two medical doctors to assess his mental state.

Magureyi’s repeated actions raise concerns over security at State House, with several previous incidents involving individuals attempting to gain unauthorized access. In 2021, a Shamva man was arrested for trespassing at State House, citing a dream as the reason he wanted to meet the President. That same year, two other men tried to pose as Central Intelligence Organisation officers to sneak into the compound. Similarly, in 2020, a man disguised as a soldier attempted to enter State House to meet Mnangagwa.

Magureyi’s actions have sparked public interest, with many questioning his motives and the level of security at the nation’s highest office.

Republican lawmaker’s ‘racist’ anti-Kwanzaa post slammed by his own constituents

0

The Kwanzaa holiday is now officially in full swing, but one Republican state senator from Arizona is publicly railing against it on social media.

In a December 26 post to his X account, senator T.J. Shope — who represents parts of Pinal, Pima and Maricopa Counties — slammed Kwanzaa as a “fake anti-American, anti-Christian ‘holiday’ celebrated by our governor,” and included a photo of a Kwanzaa display at the state capitol in Phoenix set up by the office of Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.

The Phoenix New Times reported that Shope’s tweet has been panned by African American leaders from his district. This includes the Afri-Soul Education Center (ASEC) owner Darlene Little, who set up a Kwanzaa display at the Arizona state capitol last year. One of the Black-owned businesses the ASEC incubated has its own Kwanzaa display at the capitol to commemorate this year’s holiday

“It’s just informative for people who want to hear it,” Little said. “Nobody makes you go. Nobody makes you listen.”

Kwanzaa was invented in the 1960s by Black separatist Maulana (formerly Ron) Karenga, who currently chairs the African Studies Department at Long Beach State University in California. Karenga wrote that he wanted to “give Black people an alternative to the existing holiday of Christmas and give Black people an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” The holiday runs between December 26 and January 1, and celebrates principles like creativity, faith, unity and self-reliance.

Darlene Little wrote off Shope’s comments about Kwanzaa, saying that he was entitled to his opinion and that modern society means that the Black community no longer needs whites to “co-sign” or even understand their traditions. But Patience Ogunbanjo, who runs the food truck Lasgidi Cafe, said the senator’s tweet was “a bit prejudiced” and “could be defined as racist.”

“It reflects the misunderstanding of the profound culture and the cultural significance of Kwanzaa for a lot of African Americans, not only in Phoenix, not only in Arizona, but across the United States,” Ogunbanjo said.- AlterNet

Drake Reveals He Pitched ‘God’s Plan’ TV Show To Amazon Boss Jeff Bezos

Drake has shared that his recent stream with Adin Ross was related to a bigger vision, one he says he pitched to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos: a TV series that would serve as an expanded version of his “God’s Plan” video, where he gave away money to people in need.

During his holiday stream, which was billed as the “biggest streaming giveaway ever,” Drizzy shared his idea for a “God’s Plan” TV show with Ross. He compared it to the series of food-themed travel shows helmed by the late chef and writer Anthony Bourdain.

“You see what we’re doing tonight,” Drake began. “This is a thing that I wanted to do ever since I shot that [‘God’s Plan’] video. I asked Jeff Bezos… The word I got back is that he didn’t want to do it.

“Anthony Bourdain was a guy who traveled the world, showed people different spots, took people into places that they would never see,” the megastar explained to Ross, who hadn’t heard of Bourdain.

“I want to do God’s Plan the TV show, ten episodes a year,” Drake continued. “I want to travel across the world. I know there’s a lot of billionaires out there, people who have a lot of money, who don’t have a chance to put a face to their charitable actions.”

The conceit of the show, he went on, would be to go to some notable location, meet up with someone with “an insane amount of money,” and together give away tens of millions of dollars directly to people in need.

At a different point during the stream, Drizzy gave an update on his joint album with PARTYNEXTDOOR and promised he’s “loaded” with music for the upcoming year.

“I’m loaded [for 2025.] Me and PARTY’s [album is] honestly one of the projects I’m most proud of in my life,” Drake said. “I’ve always wanted to make a full album of that – of our sound, Toronto sound, R&B.

“So it’s just the best that both of us have to offer. Listening party has to be in the city. I think ’25 will be a shift. I think people wanna just get back to like just dropping their shit.”

Tanzania finally reclaims part of Lake Malawi

Tanzania has finally reclaimed its long-awaited dream come true half of Lake Malawi, a development that has raised more questions than answers. Why has this happened during the reign of a servant leader and man of God, President Lazarus Chakwera, and his MCP, while the MCP under Kamuzu Banda refused to give any portion of the lake to Tanzania?

Former Presidents Bakili Muluzi, Bingu wa Mutharika, Madam Joyce Banda and Arthur Peter Mutharika vehemently rejected any calls for discussions over ownership of Lake Malawi, claiming that the whole lake is in Malawi.

Banda, angered by the activities of the Tanzanian government on its interest in the northern part of Lake Malawi, threatened to send Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldiers to patrol the lake, claiming full ownership of the lake.

In what started as a rumour that the Tanzanian government had built a dock on Lake Malawi, which later turned into reclaiming half of the lake, the truth has now finally settled dust that the Tanzanian government was not doing this all alone; there have been negotiations with the MCP government over the same lake.

The Tanzanian government drew a map showing new boundaries, and this was presented to the Government of Malawi and was received by Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, putting to rest all the news speculations that part of Lake Malawi was sold in exchange for alleged fuel supply to Malawi.

Ever since news on the sale of Lake Malawi to Tanzania has been making rounds in various media outlets, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera maintained his tight lips over the issue, and Malawians are yet to be told the truth about ownership of Lake Malawi.

Memories are still fresh when the entire population of Malawi was awakened with reports that Likoma and Chizumulu Islands were on sale to German investors, and no one knows how the issue was resolved besides the government dismissing the reports as not true.

Political activist Bon Kalindo has thanked Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu for coming out in the open on MBC TV through MBC Exclusive, admitting that Lake Malawi and other mountains across the country were sold to investors.

Kalindo has praised Kunkuyu for standing on the truth while President Dr Chakwera was quiet as business as usual, commenting nothing, warning Kunkuyu and MCP that if indeed the lake has been sold, they will be in trouble during the campaign trails for the September 2025 elections.

“It was very surprising that besides all the news that the Tanzanian government was busy implementing its projects on Lake Malawi, Malawi didn’t send its soldiers to monitor the situation,” said Kalindo

Kalindo has finally appealed to other Ministers to emulate the good gesture as set by Kunkuyu to stand on the truth that half of Lake Malawi belongs to Tanzania contrary to the previous map, which was drawn by the colonials that the whole of Lake Nyasa belongs to Malawi as Lake Malawi.

Kenyans decry continued abduction of government critics

The abduction of young government critics has enraged Kenyans, even as authorities deny involvement. Pressure was on Thursday piling on President William Ruto to end the abductions of the youth by masked men, usually in unmarked vehicles.

The Judiciary, clergy, Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga, Law Society of Kenya (LSK), former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party chief Kalonzo Musyoka, his Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya (DAP-K) colleague Eugene Wamalwa, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, former Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana and thousands of Kenyans are among those who have condemned the abductions and disappearances.

The condemnation follows abductions of cartoonist Gideon Kibet “Kibet Bull”, his brother Rony Kiplang’at, Mr Billy Mwangi, Mr Peter Muteti and Mr Bernard Kavuli. Mr Kibet was reportedly abducted with his brother Kiplang’at.

The cartoonist, a student at Egerton University, is famed for influencing the spread of graphics that some interpret to be silhouettes of a top leader.

Kibet’s sister, Mercy Cherotich, said her brothers were picked up by hooded armed men who arrived in unmarked cars. Social media users offended by the new wave of abductions recirculated images they believed were seen by the authorities as offensive.

They demand the immediate release of those taken.Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja, issued a statement saying security agents are not involved in the abductions, fuelling more anger.

Senator Omtatah called for the resignation of Mr Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Police Service is not involved in any abduction, and there is no police station that is holding the reported abductees,” Mr Kanja said.

“The matter in question is subject to investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority. We appeal to anybody with relevant information about missing persons to report to the nearest police station.”

In their messages, Mr Kanja and Mr Amin did not say if the more than 70 individuals reported missing – eight of them taken in the last four days– have been arrested.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said its investigations had shown “these abductions are perpetuated clandestinely, with unidentified armed persons.”

“The commission notes that those abducted have been vocal dissidents, particularly on social platforms,” the taxpayer-funded agency said in a statement read by its chairperson Roselyne Odede.

The commission said it has recorded 13 more cases of abductions or enforced disappearances in the last three months, bringing to 82 the total cases from June.

“Seven of the recent abductions were reported in December, with six of them still missing, bringing to 29 the number of persons still missing since June 2024,” it said.

Ms Odede condemned the abductions and asked police to follow up on the leads presented. “If these patterns of abductions continue, we shall be retrogressing to the dark days of our history,” she said.

The commission urged Mr Kanja to “let Kenyans know who is perpetuating the abductions and protect them, embark on investigations and arrests and ensure those taken are released.

The abductees are mostly drawn from the netizen population in the Gen Z age group opposed to the policies of the government and President Ruto.

Even as he denied police involvement, Mr Kanja sounded a warning, giving a suggestion the reasons for abductions.

“We call on online groupings and the larger public to refrain from spreading false, fabricated, malicious, distasteful, misinformed and unverified information aimed at tarnishing the reputation and image of the government,” he said.

The courts condemned the abductions on Thursday.

“The Judiciary has taken note of reports of resurfaced abductions. Kenya is a constitutional democracy, where the rule of law stands as a foundational value and guiding principle of governance. Abductions have no place in law and, indeed, are a direct threat to the rights of citizens,” the Judiciary said in a statement.

“We strongly urge security agencies and all connected entities to adhere to the law to safeguard fundamental rights and freedoms.”

1,500 Mozambique’s Escaped Inmates A Threat to Zimbabwe and Other Neighboring Countries

0

Criminologists in South Africa say criminals who escaped from a Mozambican maximum-security prison earlier this week might cross into neighbouring countries to continue their activities.

Over 1,500 prisoners escaped from Maputo Central Prison on Christmas Day, taking advantage of national protests following the disputed October 9 polls.

Police Chief Bernardino Rafael said the prisoners escaped when protesters vandalised a government building and police cars. Said Rafael:

He said that 29 of the escapees had been convicted of terrorism, while others were sentenced for serious crimes.

In an interview with The Citizen, Professor Anni Hesselink, a criminologist at the University of Limpopo, warned that many of the absconding inmates could be violent and aggressive offenders.

Among the escapees are murderers, rapists, armed robbers, serial rapists, and serial killers, with some serving time for multiple violent crimes. Said Hesselink:

Fleeing to South Africa and amalgamating with criminal networks and the criminal underworld cannot be ruled out, as it will enhance their prospects of freedom.

It will, in turn, put more strain on SA’s problematic high crime rate, our overburdened intelligence and police forces, contributing to the illegal immigrant issue, escalating fear of crime and xenophobia.

Institute for Security Studies crime analyst Willem Els told The Citizen that it was concerning the escaped criminals were armed and dangerous, having managed to disarm prison warders of weapons and ammunition. Said Els:

We know that 100 of the prisoners were rearrested and killed by the soldiers, but we don’t know how many of them are still out there.

Since there is unrest in that country, we will see an influx of political asylum seekers coming into the country and some of the criminals might take advantage of that to sneak into the country.

It is not easy to control many people. Remember that some years ago, most of the soldiers were forced to take packages and you can guess what happened when the money was finished.

You may find that some of them were forced to use their skills in the wrong way and be part of the criminals.

Els emphasized the need for South Africa to strengthen its borders to prevent the entry of dangerous criminals.

He also urged the South African government and SADC countries to work towards bringing peace to Mozambique, to prevent the spillover of criminal activities.

New York Correctional Facility Under Scrutiny After Fatal Assault on Handcuffed Inmate ‘Robert Brooks’

0

At Marcy Correctional Facility in New York, 43-year-old Robert Brooks was repeatedly punched and kicked by prison officers while handcuffed on an infirmary bed. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, on December 10.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with political figures condemning the attack and the union representing the prison officers describing it as “incomprehensible,” according to NBC News. New York State Attorney General Letitia James is leading the investigation, calling the videos of the incident “shocking and disturbing” during a virtual news conference.

The video shows Brooks, handcuffed, being carried into the infirmary by several guards. Once on the bed, they proceed to punch and kick him. His bloodied face is visible as he is pulled upright, then violently yanked by his shirt collar and pushed against a window.

Following the attack, one of the 14 staff members involved resigned, and the others, including correctional officers, sergeants, and a prison nurse, were suspended without pay as the process to terminate them is underway. Although the officers did not activate their body cameras, the cameras were on standby and recorded the incident, though without audio.

As a result of this event, new regulations will require all officers to activate their body cameras during any direct interaction with prisoners.

Brooks’ family expressed their gratitude for the swift action to hold the officers accountable, saying in a statement, “We cannot understand how this could have happened in the first place. No one should have to lose a family member this way.”

The attack occurred on the evening of December 9, in a medical exam room, shortly after Brooks was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy. An autopsy revealed preliminary findings suggesting asphyxia due to neck compression as the cause of death, and that his death resulted from actions by another person.

Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault, stemming from an incident involving his longtime girlfriend. Officials have not disclosed the reasons for his transfer to Marcy Correctional Facility, which is a medium-security prison.

A report from The Correctional Association of New York, an independent prison oversight group, had previously raised concerns about widespread abuse at Marcy Correctional Facility. The report indicated that 80% of incarcerated individuals had witnessed or experienced abuse, and nearly 70% reported incidents of racial discrimination or bias.

In response to the video, the union representing the prison staff stated, “What we witnessed is incomprehensible to say the least and is certainly not reflective of the great work that the vast majority of our membership conducts every day,” emphasizing that the incident was “the opposite of everything [the union] and its membership stand for.”

“WHEN BREAD BECOMES A LUXURY”

“WHEN BREAD BECOMES A LUXURY”

Economist Gibson Masumbu writes:

In 2021, I debated with Jose, my economist colleague, about the new government’s priorities. He emphasized stabilizing the economy and controlling inflation, while I, a layman, believed healthcare and job creation were more pressing concerns. With inflation at 16% in December 2021, Jose challenged me to track the price of a single product and observe its impact on my daily life.

I chose Pija Family Bread, a staple my family loved. Starting in January 2022, I bought a loaf every evening from a nearby outlet, initially costing K14. By March, the price had risen to K15. However, as the government’s efforts to curb inflation took hold, the price stabilized. By June 2022, inflation rate had dipped to 9.7%, and the price of Pija Family Bread remained steady at K15. With inflation rate held at single digit, the price of Pija remained at K15 until the year end.

But in 2023, the picture changed. Headline inflation initially decreased to 9.4% in January but began to rise, reaching double digits by April. The price of Pija Family Bread increased to K17, then K20 by December.

As 2024 progressed, the upward trend in inflation rate continued unabated. By June, inflation rate had reached 15%, and the price of Pija Family Bread had skyrocketed to K25. I was shocked to realize that I needed K50 to buy just two loaves, a luxury I could no longer easily afford with my stagnant income.

The final blow came on December 27th, when inflation rate surged to 16.7%. When I went to buy bread, I was greeted with a new price tag: K27 per loaf. For the first time, I was forced to settle for just one loaf, a painful reminder of my dwindling purchasing power.

As I walked home, a sense of unease settled in. The soaring cost of bread had laid bare the harsh reality of our economic struggles. It struck me that, as a nation, we’d grown numb to the crippling effects of high inflation. We’d reduced it to a mere abstraction – a statistic to be announced by officials like Mulenga, Goodson, or Sheila, a headline figure devoid of human consequence.

But the truth is, the headline inflation rate is not just a number; it’s a matter of life and death. It’s the embodiment of our inability to provide for our loved ones. The weight of this realization is crushing, especially when faced with the dilemma of explaining to my children why I can no longer provide their favorite bread.

As I look to the future, I know that the price of bread will continue to rise. But one thing is certain: the true cost of inflation will be felt in the hearts and homes of families like mine, who are struggling to make ends meet.

In the end, it’s not just about the bread; it’s about the dignity and security that comes with being able to provide for our loved ones. As we move forward, let us not forget the human cost of inflation and the importance of finding solutions to this pressing issue.

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN IN POLITICS IN ZAMBIA

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN IN POLITICS IN ZAMBIA

Lusaka, Sunday (December 29, 2024)
MEDIA STATEMENT

Research by Janet Mundando under the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR) has detailed challenges hampering the participation of women in politics in Zambia, resulting in their underrepresentation.

Ms Mundando noted that despite women making up half of the world’s population, they are significantly underrepresented in decision-making positions.

She made the findings at a community round table meeting organised by Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR) Muna Ndulo Campus in Lusaka supported by the Irish Embassy.

“Globally, women hold only 27% of parliamentary seats and 5-6% in local governments,” she said.

She emphasised the need for meaningful participation, where women contest electoral offices rather than just supporting roles like dancing at airports or cooking at political gatherings.

Ms. Mundando pointed out that women face multiple forms of inequality, which compound their challenges.

She mentioned that women often juggle numerous responsibilities, such as being mothers, wives, and students, which adds to their burdens.

The Researcher referenced the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) of 1979 and the Beijing Declaration of 1995 as significant milestones in the fight for gender equality.

“In Zambia, the National Gender Policy of 2014 and the Gender Equity and Equality Act of 2015 were highlighted as key legislative frameworks. Despite these efforts, women remain underrepresented in various sectors, except for the judiciary and banking, where some progress has been made. In the current parliament, women’s representation stands at 15%, lower than the 17% in 2016,” she said.

Ms. Mundando provided a historical overview of women’s representation in the Zambian parliament since 1991, showing fluctuations over the years.

She noted that the judiciary has been more responsive to gender equality, with a significant number of women judges in the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, and High Court.

Ms Mundando identified several challenges to women’s political participation, including social, cultural, institutional, and political factors.

She cited patriarchy, financial constraints, and political violence as major barriers.

Ms. Mundando stressed the need for an electoral system that supports gender quotas and more inclusive representation.

She concluded by acknowledging the ongoing fight for gender equality and the need for continued efforts to improve women’s representation in politics.

Nalumango honours husband for believing in her

By Oliver Chisenga

VICE-PRESIDENT Mutale Nalumango says a woman who succeeds does so because there is a man who believes in her.

In an interview following the recent conferring of an honorary doctorate in Education Management and Leadership on her by Gideon Robert University and an honorary doctorate in Political Science from Kesmonds International University of Cameroon, the Vice-President paid tribute to her husband Bishop Max Nalumango for supporting her.

The honorary doctorates were conferred on Vice-President Nalumango during the 11th graduation ceremony in Lusaka last week.

She said Bishop Nalumango has been her pillar of strength and a firm believer of everything she has been doing.

“To my dear husband, your continuous support has been my strength. Bishop, Dr, Max, I heard many names… Nalumango, that’s where I get the names from. The late Dr Myles Monroe once said…and I believe him, ‘a woman who succeeds does so because there is a man who believes in her’. You have been that firm believer and I profoundly share this recognition with you,” said Vice-President on Friday. “Believing in me, with all that I am, with all the weaknesses that I have, is like a faculty or faculties of Gideon Robert University and Kesmonds International University believing in me. And today honouring me is a push to greater works. Being honoured is actually giving you greater responsibility … I will not disappoint you.”

Bishop Nalumango responded to the challenge by planting a kiss on the Vice President’s lips as he presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Bishop Nalumango is the founder and overseer of Oasis of Blessing Assembly situated in Lusaka’s Ngwerere area.

In October, Vice-President Nalumango was also conferred with a Master of Laws in Constitutionalism and Human Rights from Cavendish University.

NO ONE WANTS TO GRAB ANYTHING THAT BELONGED TO DORA MOONO NYAMBE OR HER ESTABLISHMENT- FAMILY

NO ONE WANTS TO GRAB ANYTHING THAT BELONGED TO DORA MOONO NYAMBE OR HER ESTABLISHMENT- FAMILY

This publication contacted the family of the late philanthropist Dora Moono Nyambe to accertain the current state of affairs relating to the recent events that have characterized social media regarding her death and funeral and they gave the statement below :
—————————————————

I’m Coming No Need Of Mingalato – Tasila Lungu

Dear Chawama Family, Friends and Fellow Zambians,

Firstly, let me thank all of you for your prayers, kind words and messages, I am truly grateful as a first-time mum – I feel I still have much to learn and I look forward to the tips and advice you kindly share so please be patient with me. This period is truly a time of blessing for Patrick and me, despite the health challenges. God has truly blessed us and I pray he touches other Zambian families as he has ours.

I have always co-operated with the DEC and its officers and continue to do so, they often operate in a challenging environment and they face immense pressure from many quarters.  My lawyers have been excellent and very professional in their work in this regard. I was therefore surprised and deeply disappointed to learn through social media of a press briefing that the DEC held on December 24th and its content.

I am currently away on medical leave, and had sought permission in writing from Parliament where I serve in the House as MP for our constituency Chawama. I am not permitted by law to discuss matters before the court. I am a firm believer in the Rule of Law, fairness for all before the law but I like many Zambians have now become deeply concerned by the partial manner justice is seemingly being applied. This situation erodes public confidence and trust in our judicial system and even the electoral process – we expect the ECZ to instill this confidence.

The situation in Zambia currently and indeed for the future is deeply worrying. As a Lawmaker, I would not wish for Zambians to completely lose confidence in the arms of Government (the Executive, Judiciary and Legislature) and we should continue to emphasize the importance of upholding the separation of powers because “mingalato” damages public confidence in these institutions. Mingalato also leads to a waste of public resources, valuable time and effort that should be focused on national development and deprives citizens of truly engaging fully in the democratic process. Zambians do not wish to return to a One Party State style of governance.

In addition, as you may be aware, Parliament is currently on recess. I will be available to my constituents as Parliament opens. Many of you have been able to reach me through my work line via the internet calls and messages, and it’s wonderful to hear from you – I miss you all. In case I am urgently needed, Chawama Family please continue to use the same line. Otherwise I will be seeing you as Parliament opens as we have much work to do for our constituency in the months ahead.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families from my small family! May God bless you all.

UPND ABUSING BY-ELECTIONS….threats and intimidation will not work this time around during the forthcoming by-elections, says Socialist Party

UPND ABUSING BY-ELECTIONS

….threats and intimidation will not work this time around during the forthcoming by-elections, says Socialist Party

Copperbelt…. Saturday December 28, 2024

The Socialist Party (SP) has accused the ruling UPND of abusing by-elections in the country saying these levels of desperation is unacceptable.

SP General Secretary Dr Cosmas Musumali says this time around, threats and intimidation will not work in the forthcoming by-elections.

Dr. Musumali says it is clear that the UPND is desperate after realizing that they have not performed according to the expectations of Zambians.

He said the UPND have created a bad legacy of dictatorial tendencies, corruption and that they will be remembered as the incompetent government.

Dr. Musumali says the UPND have done enough damage to the country and do not deserve another term of office.

“The picture you (UPND) have created is that you are dictators, corrupt and an incompetent government. You need to torn down on your desperation and it is clear that the people have sensed it. You talk about being in opposition for 23 years then you want to hold the people of Zambia hostage? Zambians are not your slaves,” he said this when he addressed the media on the Copperbelt today.

“You are saying you suffered for 23 years while in opposition, your mission was to come and serve Zambians but you have lamentably failed. Go on the streets, jump on a bus and ask Zambians what they will say about you. You have done enough damage to this country and you don’t deserve another term of office. For Zambians, 2026 is too far.”

Dr. Musumali said the UPND have betrayed the people of Zambia who innocently with the hope of having change woke up early enough to go and vote for them.

The SP General Secretary also said despite the unfair by-elections, his party will continue to take part in the future elections.

He said the SP has not done badly in the 55 previous by-elections as in most cases they come out second.

A 24-hour Economy Operation requires Critical Investment in Security and Public Infrastructure

A 24-hour Economy Operation requires Critical Investment in Security and Public Infrastructure

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

Laura Miti has posted that officers from the Zambia Police harrassed her crew and closed her “Ipesheni” restaurant in Mtendere for operating in after-hours.

This is because, a 24-hour economy is strange to many including the Zambia Police and the Lusaka City Council that should be issuing trading permits.

Further the sudden rise in crime rates, especially with the advent of “junkies” in Lusaka makes it perilous for residents to move or venture in the night.

Yet a 24-hour economy has been the norm, not unique, especially in sectors such as health (hospitals and clinics do not close), the Zambia Police itself( siba vala police station)  and in the industrial and mining sectors where workers take shifts and the industries do not close.

Workers know it as the Kazizi economy.

But it has become fashionable for leaders to present this phenomenon as a magic bullet to the economic quagmire our country finds itself and announce that Zambia will introduce a 24-hour economy.

True, a 24-hour economy can provide benefits such as  increased economic activity, greater consumer flexibility, more employment opportunities, improved utilization of infrastructure, boosted productivity for businesses, and the potential for growth in sectors and subsectors like tourism, restaurants and entertainment.

But for this to be succesful, basic requisites must be met such a critical investment in good infrastructure, increased security, the provision of street lights, and an efficient public transport system are required to support continuous round-the-clock operations.

And as we do this, we must remember that a 24-hour economy raises concerns regarding the health of workers and the impact on their families and relationships.

In the Western world where this has taken off, a wealth of empirical data shows that non-standard work schedules are both highly prevalent but generate a level of complexity in family functioning that demands greater public attention and does affect workers’ family relationships, workers’ fatigue and work-life balance.

So Laura is right by opening that 24hour restaurant in Mtendere, but Government must do its essential part to support such operations as outlined above for both her workers and her patrons to enjoy safely, late tasty and savoury meals.

Kanye West, Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice Get Bashed On “Worst Songs Of The Year” List

0

For every controversial “Best Music of the Year” list, there’s usually a “Worst” equivalent drawing a lot of fan ire, as well. Moreover, that’s exactly what Variety recently offered with their “Worst Songs of 2024” list, which contained a couple of divisive hip-hop placements. The most notable of these are Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s “CARNIVAL” off their VULTURES 1 collaboration album (a track that also features Rich The Kid and Playboi Carti), Nicki Minaj’s Megan Thee Stallion diss track “Big Foot,” and Ice Spice’s lead Y2K! single, “Think U The S**t (Fart).” Maybe you agree or disagree, but you can’t deny that all these releases carried their fair share of criticisms.

As for Kanye West’s inclusion on this “Worst Songs of 2024” list from Variety, the publication pointed to the blatant misogyny and edgy provocation on “CARNIVAL” and its bombastic chorus. Nicki Minaj caught flack for her “embarrassingly outlandish” diss track, whereas Ice Spice’s “Think U The S**t (Fart)” ranked among the most vapid novelties of the year in the publication’s eyes. Maybe these seem like harsh critiques, but we certainly heard much worse about these tracks in 2024.

Elsewhere, other rap-related inclusions on Variety’s “Worst Songs of 2024” list included Camila Cabello’s “I LUV IT” with Playboi Carti and Tom MacDonald’s “Facts” featuring Ben Shapiro, which are frankly much easier tracks to hate on. But Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Ice Spice had expectation and visibility on their side, which made their poorly received output this year all the more shocking and impactful. Regardless, we can’t deny that these expectations are probably what makes these records so bad for many fans, and that they might not be that horrible out of context.

Meanwhile, as fans continue to share their favorite music of 2024, they also anticipate what could emerge in 2025, especially for artists that might need a comeback in the public eye. Kanye West will allegedly drop a new album Bully soon, Ice Spice just dropped off her Y2K! deluxe, and Nicki Minaj might drop some more Pink Friday 2 deluxe versions soon. We’ll see how their fans react..

Diddy Accused of Hosting ‘Wild King Nights’ Parties and Ordering His Staff to Supply Tlof Tlof Toys

Diddy Accused of Hosting ‘Wild King Nights’ Parties and Ordering His Staff to Supply Tlof Tlof Toys

It never rains but pours for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, as a former employee has accused him of ordering the supply of adult toys for parties dubbed ‘Wild King Nights.’

New claims have emerged from the ex-staffer, shedding light on the rapper’s alleged ‘Wild King Nights’ parties, which reportedly featured drug-fueled activities and other illicit behavior.

Former Employee Details ‘Wild King Nights’ Duties
Phillip Pines, who worked for Diddy between 2019 and 2021, filed a lawsuit shortly before Christmas, accusing the rapper of ordering him to supply various items for the so-called “Wild King Nights.”

These included “red lights, ice buckets, alcohol, marijuana joints, honey packs for male libido, baby oil, Astro glide, towels, illegal drugs,” and “tlof tlof machines.”

Pines claims the events could last for days and alleges that his responsibilities included bringing additional tlof toys and drugs when requested.

After the parties, he was instructed to remove evidence, clean up bodily fluids, and erase incriminating videos from Diddy’s devices.

Threats of Blackballing and Harsh Work Environment
In the lawsuit, Pines describes being treated like “an animal playing fetch” to prove his loyalty. He claims he was threatened with termination and blackballing from the entertainment industry if he refused to comply. Pines also alleges he was ordered to bribe hotel cleaning staff to avoid reports of suspicious activity.

Diddy’s Legal Team Responds
Combs’ legal team has categorically denied the allegations, stating:

“No matter how many lawsuits are filed, it won’t change the fact that Mr. Combs has never sxually assaulted or s_x trafficked anyone – man or woman, adult or minor. We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason. Fortunately, a fair and impartial judicial process exists to find the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will prevail in court.”

Awaiting Trial for Serious Charges
The 55-year-old rapper has been in one of New York’s toughest jails since September, awaiting trial on charges including s*x trafficking and racketeering. Allegations against him include drugging and assaulting victims at events reportedly known as “Freak Offs.”

Makhadzi Finally Speaks Out on Kwaslondon Festival Chaos

Makhadzi, an award-winning musician and beloved performer, has addressed the turmoil at the Kwaslondon Fun, Games & Musical Festival. Held on December 26, 2024, at Makwassie Stadium in Wolmaransstad, North West, the event descended into chaos when she did not appear as scheduled.

In her official statement, Makhadzi revealed that her absence was due to the event promoter’s failure to meet the agreed-upon payment terms.

Her team explained: “We did not receive the balance within the 14 days as outlined in the contract.” The failure to honor these terms left fans outraged and sparked violent protests at the venue.

The Kwaslondon Festival, known for its dedication to supporting underprivileged families and funding community bursaries, was intended to feature Makhadzi as its headliner. The event, now in its 16th year, has a history of fostering community development. However, this year’s edition took a dark turn.

Fans eagerly awaited Makhadzi’s performance, which was scheduled for 10:00 PM. As hours passed with no appearance or explanation, frustration grew. At 5:00 AM, organisers attempted to appease the crowd by introducing an impersonator resembling Makhadzi. The deception backfired spectacularly, igniting outrage that culminated in fans throwing objects at the stage and setting it ablaze.

Emergency Response and Consequences
Emergency services and law enforcement were dispatched to the scene as tensions spiraled out of control. Although no fatalities occurred, the impersonator suffered minor injuries during the unrest. By the time the fire was extinguished, the stage, sound equipment, and other infrastructure had been extensively damaged.

A spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

“While we empathize with the frustration, such destructive behavior is unacceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.”

Makhadzi’s Official Statement: The Contractual Dispute
On December 27, 2024, Makhadzi Entertainment released a detailed statement addressing the incident. The statement revealed that the promoter had failed to fulfil contractual obligations, including settling the full payment within the agreed 14-day timeframe. Despite receiving an initial deposit and an additional R3,000 for promotional materials, the remaining balance was not paid, prompting the artist to withdraw from the event.

“Makhadzi and her team only proceed with confirmed events where all contractual terms are honoured”

Her team expressed deep regret over the chaos and disappointment but emphasized the importance of adhering to professional standards.

Scrutiny on the Promoter’s Role

Communications between Makhadzi’s team and the promoter, Ismael Gauteng, were leaked, showcasing repeated reminders about the outstanding payment. Despite these efforts, the promoter failed to settle the balance, leading to Makhadzi’s absence. Attempts to reach Ismael Gauteng for comment have been unsuccessful, and criticism has flooded social media, with many holding the promoter accountable for the debacle.

T-Sean reveals having skin allergy after experiencing cyber bullying

THEY say, “never ridicule a pain you have never encountered.” People are silently fighting battles that you don’t know of and if you can’t help them or even pray for them, don’t disrespect them.

This is the story of celebrated dancehall artiste T-Sean AKA Mr Baila who was last week subjected to cyber bullying where he was trolled and called names for his skin appearance.

Instead of praying for him or better still helping him in silence, some netizens ridiculed the artiste for what seemed like skin bleaching to them.

T-Sean whose real name, Richard Mulenga is a celebrated music artiste and producer who many fans can attest that his music can make one feel alive and thought provoked.

But the past week has not been easy on him such that even those who claimed to be his fans trolled him for his skin.

Some netizens said the most insensitive stuff instead of showing love as they suggested that the artiste had become a frequent user of aunty Milly’s sukuluza products.

This situation is similar to how the late US actor Chadwick Boseman appeared on the internet with a disfigured body and was bullied when in fact, he was dying.

This writer wonders how the bullies never learn despite having so many examples that turned into a tragedy.

And to address the concerns, T-Sean replied to one commenter who asked for clarity on the artiste’s skin.

The Zambian dancehall king disclosed to his fans in the comment section that he had suffered a skin allergy reaction which brought about acne.

He further revealed that he was recovering and the acne was clearing up.

“I had an allergy reaction and the acne is clearing up and I feel great,” commented T-Sean.

Cristiano Ronaldo Names the Team He’d ‘Bet On’ to Win the Champions League

Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo has named the team he believes has the best chance of winning the UEFA Champions League.

The 39-year-old has not competed in the Champions League since leaving Juventus for Manchester United and later transferring to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in January 2023.

Despite his absence, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains a legend of the competition, holding records for the most appearances (183), goals (140), and assists (42) in Champions League history.

The Portuguese star has won the Champions League five times—once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid.

Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards on Friday, December 27, Ronaldo expressed confidence in Los Blancos’ ability to retain the Champions League title this season.

“If you want to bet on a team in the Champions League, bet on Real Madrid,” Ronaldo said via Madrid Zone.
How Real Madrid are faring this season in the UCL
Real Madrid claimed a record-extending 15th Champions League title last season, defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley.

However, with two rounds remaining in the inaugural Champions League league phase, the reigning champions face a genuine risk of elimination from the competition.

To secure automatic qualification to the round of 16, teams must finish in the top eight.

Those ranked ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff in February, with the winners claiming the remaining eight spots

Teams finishing 25th to 36th in the standings will be eliminated from the competition without the option to drop into the Europa League.

Real Madrid currently sit in 20th place, having secured their first win in three matches by narrowly defeating Atalanta in the previous game week.

Ronaldo makes bold Lionel Messi confession

Ronaldo once acknowledged an area where his long-time rival Lionel Messi outshines him on the pitch.

Despite their fierce competition, CR7 admitted in a 2016 interview that he envies Messi’s exceptional left foot, a trait he believes gives the Argentine an edge.

PUTIN APOLOGISES FOR PLANE CRASH WITHOUT SAYING RUSSIA AT FAULT

December 28, 2024

(BBC) Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has apologised to the president of neighbouring Azerbaijan for the downing of a commercial airliner in Russian airspace, in which 38 people were killed – but stopped short of saying Russia was responsible.

In his first comments on the Christmas Day crash, Putin said the “tragic incident” had occurred when Russian air defence systems were actively repelling Ukrainian drones.

It had been reported the plane came under fire from Russian air defence systems as it tried to land in Chechnya – forcing it to divert across the Caspian Sea.

It crash-landed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 of the 67 on board.

The Kremlin released a statement on Saturday noting Putin had spoken to Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev by phone.

“(President) Vladimir Putin apologised for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement said.

Prior to Saturday, the Kremlin had not yet commented on the crash. But Russian aviation authorities had said the situation in the region was “very complicated” due to Ukrainian drone strikes on Chechnya.

Aviation experts and others in Azerbaijan believe the plane’s GPS systems were affected by electronic jamming and it was then damaged by shrapnel from Russian air defence missile blasts.

Survivors had previously reported hearing loud bangs before the plane crashed, suggesting it had been targeted.

Azerbaijan had not officially accused Russia this week, but the country’s transport minister said the plane was subject to “external interference” and damaged inside and out as it tried to land.

US defence officials on Friday had also said they believed Russia was responsible for the downing.

In Saturday’s phone call, Putin acknowledged that the Azerbaijan Airlines plane had repeatedly tried to land at Grozny airport in Chechnya on 25 December.

At the time, Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were being attacked by Ukrainian drones and Russian air defense systems had repelled those attacks, Putin said according to the Kremlin’s statement.

Moscow noted that Russian investigators had launched a criminal investigation. Azerbaijan had already announced it would launch an investigation.- BBC

Vinicius Junior Reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Claims He Was ‘Robbed’ of Ballon d’Or

Vinicius Junior has offered his perspective on Cristiano Ronaldo’s assertion that he is currently the finest footballer in the world.

The Brazilian winger also addressed his disappointment at being overlooked for this year’s Ballon d’Or, a decision that sparked debate across the football fraternity.

Heading into the 2024 Ballon d’Or Awards, Vinicius was widely regarded as the frontrunner for the prestigious accolade.

However, the night took an unexpected turn when Manchester City’s Rodri claimed the title back in October, leaving many questioning the verdict.

The outcome prompted Real Madrid and the Brazilian star to boycott the ceremony in Paris, highlighting their discontent.

Despite the setback, the 24-year-old forward found redemption by securing the FIFA The Best Men’s Player award, edging out Rodri in what many viewed as justice.

This achievement not only solidified his status as one of the world’s elite but also underscored his resilience in the face of disappointment.

As if that was not enough, Vinicius closed the year on a high, leading Real Madrid to victory in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup against Pachuca.

As noted by Real Madrid’s website, he also followed it up with the Player of the Year accolade at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards.

Ronaldo’s Ballon d’Or claim about Vinicius
Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, weighed in on the debate, unequivocally stating that Vinicius deserved the prestigious prize over Rodri.

“It was unfair, in my opinion,” the Portuguese legend said, as quoted by Goal.

Ronaldo, who was also recognised as the ‘Best Middle East Player’ during the same ceremony, reckoned that Vinicius was the best player on the planet in the last 12 months.

Vinicius responds to Ronaldo’s praise
Reacting to Ronaldo’s endorsement, Vinicius expressed gratitude and admiration for one of his idols.

“If Cristiano says it, then I end up believing I’m the best,” he remarked while accepting his award.
Sharing the moment with two of his heroes, Ronaldo and Neymar, Vinicius described it as an unforgettable experience.

“Winning the best player award with my idols here watching is an honour for me,” he added, reflecting on the recognition that capped off an extraordinary year.

Political turmoil shakes South Korea’s economy

0

After South Korea’s president and his replacement were both deposed over a failed bid to impose martial law, deepening political turmoil is threatening the country’s currency and shaking confidence in its economy.

The won, which plunged Friday to its lowest level against the dollar since 2009, has been in near-constant decline since President Yoon Suk Yeol’s attempt to scrap civilian rule in early December.

Business and consumer confidence in Asia’s fourth-largest economy have also taken their biggest hit since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to figures released by the Bank of Korea.

Lawmakers impeached Yoon in mid-December on charges of insurrection, and on Friday they impeached his successor, acting president and prime minister Han Duck-soo, arguing that he refused demands to complete Yoon’s removal from office and bring him to justice.

That thrust Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok into the additional roles of acting president and prime minister.

Choi has pledged to do all he can to end “this period of turmoil” and resolve the political crisis gripping the country.

At the heart of the stalemate is the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to uphold parliament’s decision to impeach Yoon.

It must do so by a two-thirds majority, however. And because three of the court’s nine seats are currently vacant, a unanimous vote is required to confirm the suspended president’s removal.

Otherwise, Yoon will be automatically returned to office.

Lawmakers on Thursday nominated three judges to fill the vacant seats, but acting president Han refused to approve them, precipitating his own impeachment.

After an acrimonious day in which lawmakers from Yoon’s party erupted in protest, the country’s newest acting president sought to project calm.

“Although we are facing unexpected challenges once again, we are confident that our robust and resilient economic system will ensure rapid stabilisation,” Choi said Friday.

The 61-year-old career civil servant has inherited a 2025 budget — adopted by the opposition alone — which is 4.1 trillion won ($2.8 billion) less than the government had hoped for.

“There are already signs the crisis is having an impact on the economy,” Gareth Leather of Capital Economics wrote in a note to clients, citing the dip in consumer and business confidence.

“The crisis is unfolding against a backdrop of a struggling economy,” he added, with GDP growth expected to be just two percent this year, weighed down by a global slowdown in demand for semiconductors.

“Longer term, political polarisation and resulting uncertainty could hold back investment in Korea,” Leather wrote, citing the example of Thailand, another ultra-polarised country whose economy has stagnated since a coup in 2014.

But other economists noted that the South Korean economy has so far weathered the chaos well.

As early as December 4, the day after Yoon declared martial law following a budget tussle with the opposition, the central bank promised to inject sufficient liquidity to stabilise the markets, and the Kospi Index has lost less than four percent since the start of the crisis.

“Like everyone, I was surprised when Yoon took those crazy measures,” Park Sang-in, a professor of economics at Seoul National University, told AFP. “But there was a resilience of democracy.”

“We come from being an underdeveloped country to one of the world’s most dynamic economies in very few years, and Yoon Suk Yeol is a side effect of the growth,” he added.

“Korean society was mature enough to counter his crazy actions.”

Nigeria denies colluding with France to destabilize Niger

0

Nigeria has denied accusations from Niger’s military leader, Brig Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, of colluding with France to destabilise the junta-led nation.

In a Christmas Day interview, Gen Tchiani accused France of allying with militant groups in the Lake Chad region to undermine Niger’s security, allegedly with Nigeria’s knowledge.

“Nigerian authorities are not unaware of this underhanded move,” Gen Tchiani was quoted as saying by AFP.

In response, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, told BBC Hausa that the allegations were “baseless” and “false”.

Mr Ribadu said Nigeria would never “sabotage Niger or allow any disaster to befall it”.

Nigeria’s Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, said the allegations were unfounded and a “diversionary tactic aimed at covering his administration’s failures”.

“These claims exist solely in the realm of imagination. Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance, overt or covert, with France — or any other country — to destabilise Niger Republic,” Idris said.

Idris also denied sabotaging Niger’s pipeline and agriculture, which it was accused of.

Gen Tchiani’s allegations have worsened diplomatic tensions with Nigeria, already strained since the 2023 military coup that ousted ex-president Mohamed Bazoum.

West Africa’s regional bloc, Ecowas, led by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, imposed economic sanctions on Niger and threatened military intervention if constitutional order was not restored.

Ecowas came to Nigeria’s defence in a statement on Thursday refuting the claims.

“For years, Nigeria has supported peace and security of several countries not only in the West African subregion but also on the African continent,” the regional bloc said in a statement shared on Thursday.

“Ecowas therefore refutes any suggestion that such a generous and magnanimous country would become a state sponsor of terrorism,” it read.

Two weeks ago, Ecowas approved the withdrawal of three military-led countries, including Niger, after they refused to restore democratic rule.

Since the coup, Niger has urged France and other Western powers to withdraw their military bases and formed a security alliance with junta-led neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso.

POLICE PLANS TO SUMMON HARRY KALABA OVER HIS REVELATIONS THAT UPND PLANS TO UNBUNDLE ZESCO

POLICE PLANS TO SUMMON HARRY KALABA OVER HIS REVELATIONS THAT UPND PLANS TO UNBUNDLE ZESCO

By KBN TV Staff Reporter

Police on Monday plans to summon Citizens First President Harry Kalaba over a recent media statement in which he revealed that the Hakainde Hichilema led UPND administration plans to unbundle the power utility Zesco and sell units to a foreign entity.

Police sources have told KBN TV that plans to arrest Kalaba and slap him with seditious practices are advanced within the Police command.

Several stakeholders including the United States of America and the United Nations Human Rights watch have criticized the UPND Government for its heavy handed tactics to silence dissenting voices and arresting opposition political figures.

Speaking at the end of the year media briefing this week, Kalaba claimed that the current government had taken corruption to unprecedented heights, making the previous government look like “child’s play” in comparison.

The vibrant Kalaba, who has never been arrested before in his political career, said the UPND government was taking steps to unbundle ZESCO and sell it to a UK-based firm, raising concerns about the motives behind the decision and the potential implications for the country’s electricity supply.

Rumours of the planned sale of ZESCO have been simmering from as early as 2021 just after the UPND administration took office. On November 8 2021, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President Kasonde Mwenda, raised the alarm of a possible plot by President Hakainde Hichilema’s government to embark on a process to sell the power utility ZESCO, and Zambia’s only oil refinery-INDENI.

In his Facebook post, Mwenda said: “The sale of INDENI and ZESCO has advanced. As Economic Freedom Fighters-EFF, we will not allow our few remaining National Assets to be sold again. #neveragain”

“We refuse a second Privatization. If you proceed, the Youths will rise and we are ready to go to prison over our Country Zambia.”

But on January 14, 2022, then Minister of Information and Chief Government Spokesperson Chushi Kasanda had dismissed any plans to sell ZESCO and that the restructuring of ZESCO did not mean selling, but rather improving operations and increasing efficiency of the power utility.

And when contacted for a comment on the planned arrest, Kalaba dismissed the rumour as a joke saying “President Hichilema in opposition had accused the PF of planning to sell off Zesco and it was not seditious, how does it become seditious now that Harry Kalaba has exposed his intentions to continue with privatization of state assets?” he said.

LUNGU’S FAILURE TO CHOOSE A SUCCESSOR PARALYSIS ZAMBIAN POLITICS- Malama Stanley

LUNGU’S FAILURE TO CHOOSE A SUCCESSOR PARALYSIS ZAMBIAN POLITICS.

Former President Edgar Lungu’s inability to groom a successor during his tenure has created a ripple effect that now threatens not only the Patriotic Front (PF) but the broader political landscape in Zambia.

His indecision and reluctance to identify a capable successor while in office have left the PF fractured, providing fertile ground for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to consolidate its position and exacerbate the opposition’s struggles.

Lungu’s hesitation to anoint a successor reflects a dangerous and selfish approach to leadership that has stunted political progress in Zambia.

Members and supporters are growing impatient, perceiving Lungu’s reluctance as an act of self-interest.

The delay in choosing a leader has deepened the PF’s woes. If this indecision persists, the PF could face political oblivion, leaving disillusioned citizens with no choice but to rally behind less viable alternatives.

Lungu should identify a leader who can rebuild public trust and position the party as a credible alternative to the UPND. Time is of the essence—by January, the PF must have a clearly endorsed successor to provide direction and hope for the party’s future.

Lungu’s indecision has paralyzed not only the PF but the entire opposition landscape in Zambia. Young politicians and aspiring leaders are left in limbo, unable to plan their political futures amid the chaos. The uncertainty has created a stagnant political environment, where meaningful decisions are delayed, and progress is stifled.

Lungu’s delay to anoint someone has weakened the opposition’s collective ability to challenge the UPND effectively, leaving the political field unbalanced and vulnerable to authoritarian tendencies.

Lungu must take decisive action to salvage what remains of the PF and restore hope to Zambians seeking an alternative to the UPND. By identifying and publicly endorsing a successor, he can provide the party with a fighting chance in the 2026 elections.

Without a clear signal of leadership, the PF and the opposition at large risk fading into irrelevance. The onus is on Lungu to step up, set aside personal interests, and prioritize the collective good of his party and the nation. Only then can Zambia’s political environment regain its vibrancy and direction.

In the end, the legacy of a leader is defined not by their tenure in power but by their ability to ensure continuity and stability. For Lungu, the time to act is now—before it is too late for both the PF and Zambia’s democracy.

Why the 10th December Eligibility Judgment to Bar Former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu is Legally Flawed

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

The Constitutional Court’s judgment of December 10, 2024, barring former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu from contesting the 2026 elections, has sparked intense debate. While President Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND officials view the ruling as a reinforcement of constitutionalism, many patriotic Zambians see it for what it truly is: a legally flawed decision that undermines justice, constitutional interpretation, and Zambia’s democratic principles.

This judgment is deeply problematic for several reasons, the most prominent being its disregard for the principle of non-retroactivity, its inconsistency with prior rulings, its violation of fundamental rights, and its overtly political implications.

1. The Principle of Non-Retroactivity

The cornerstone of any fair legal system is the principle of non-retroactivity. This principle prohibits the retrospective application of laws or legal interpretations in ways that negatively impact individuals. Simply put, one cannot be punished under a new legal standard for actions that were lawful under previous interpretations.

The Constitutional Court had ruled on former President Lungu’s eligibility on no fewer than three occasions. The court—the final authority on constitutional matters in Zambia—had consistently reaffirmed that the two years Dr. Lungu served after President Michael Sata’s death did not constitute a full presidential term. According to Article 106(6)(b) of the Constitution, a term served for less than three years cannot be counted as a full term.

These rulings established a clear precedent: Former President Lungu, having only served one full term between 2016 and 2021, remains eligible to run for another term. This legal foundation is firm, clear, and based on constitutional provisions that should guide any future deliberations.

Now, a few years later, the Constitutional Court’s December 10, 2024, ruling attempts to reinterpret the same provision to disqualify Dr. Lungu retroactively. This reversal violates the principle of non-retroactivity and undermines the predictability of the law. Decisions like this send a dangerous signal that settled legal matters can be revisited and altered at will, destabilizing the legal system and creating uncertainty for all citizens.

2. Inconsistency in Legal Interpretation

A stable judiciary relies on consistent legal interpretations. In previous rulings, the Constitutional Court concluded that Dr. Lungu’s first term, lasting less than three years, did not meet the constitutional threshold of a full term. This interpretation was based on Article 106(6) and was widely accepted as a settled legal precedent.

The 2024 ruling overturns this precedent without providing adequate justification, raising questions about the impartiality and integrity of the judiciary. Such inconsistency erodes public confidence in the courts and creates a perception that the judiciary can be manipulated for political ends.

Judicial consistency is essential for protecting the rule of law. By reversing its earlier position, the Constitutional Court not only undermines its credibility but also casts doubt on the reliability of its decisions in future cases.

3. Violation of Fundamental Rights

The December 10 judgment potentially infringes upon Dr. Lungu’s constitutional rights, including his right to equal treatment under the law and his right to participate in the political process.

By applying a new legal standard to disqualify him after he served under a previously accepted interpretation, the court has denied Dr. Lungu the fair and predictable legal processes guaranteed by the Zambian Constitution. This selective application of the law raises concerns about judicial impartiality and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

4. Political and Social Implications

The ruling’s timing and context suggest a politically motivated attempt to eliminate a key political figure rather than a genuine effort to uphold constitutional principles.

For many Zambians, the judgment appears to be less about legal reasoning and more about sidelining a former president who remains influential and capable of mobilizing significant public support. This perception is dangerous, as it deepens political divisions, fosters mistrust in state institutions, and undermines Zambia’s democracy.

Furthermore, allowing legal interpretations to be retroactively applied to disqualify candidates sets a dangerous precedent. If the judiciary can be weaponized to settle political scores, Zambia risks sliding into authoritarianism, where the courts become tools for suppressing dissent and manipulating democratic processes.

5. As Things Stand: Dr. Lungu is Eligible

Despite the December 10 judgment, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu remains legally eligible to contest the 2026 elections. The Constitutional Court’s previous rulings remain binding precedents, and its clear interpretation of Article 106(6) cannot be undone retroactively without violating fundamental legal principles.

This recent judgment is a politically motivated maneuver that well-meaning Zambians should reject outright. It represents a troubling departure from constitutional fairness and threatens the foundations of democracy in Zambia.

All things being equal, Dr. Lungu should appear on the ballot in 2026. The court’s decision to bar him is not only legally questionable but also raises profound concerns about the politicization of the judiciary.

Conclusion

The Constitutional Court’s December 10, 2024, judgment barring Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu from contesting the 2026 elections is legally indefensible. By violating the principle of non-retroactivity, reversing established precedent without adequate justification, and infringing upon Dr. Lungu’s rights, the court has undermined the rule of law and cast doubt on its own integrity.

If Zambia is to remain a beacon of democracy in Africa, it must ensure that its judiciary remains independent, impartial, and guided by principles of fairness and justice. Well-meaning Zambians must reject politically motivated judgments and demand that Dr. Lungu be given his rightful place on the ballot in 2026.

Ultimately, the people—not the courts—should decide Dr. Lungu’s political fate through free and fair elections.

Has Hakainde Hichilema (HH) Lost His Popularity?

Hakainde Hichilema’s (HH) decline in popularity is not merely due to unfulfilled promises but rather his failure to provide effective leadership in the critical areas where Zambians expected improvement.

When HH won the 2021 general election, it wasn’t because he was the most popular or loved candidate. He represented an alternative to the Patriotic Front (PF) government, which had left many Zambians disillusioned. People were simply fed up with the PF’s policies and sought a change, hoping HH would address their concerns.

Zambians entrusted HH with power, expecting him to deliver on several key issues:

1. Fuel Prices

Under the PF government, fuel prices kept rising, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Zambians hoped HH would stabilize and reduce fuel costs. However, instead of fulfilling this expectation, HH’s administration has seen fuel prices double compared to the PF era. This has left many feeling let down and betrayed.

2. Exchange Rate Stability

During the PF regime, the kwacha’s value plummeted, with the exchange rate reaching K19 to 1 USD. Businesses suffered, and many Zambians hoped HH would strengthen the currency and bring the dollar exchange rate to single digits. Unfortunately, under HH’s leadership, the kwacha has weakened further, doubling in value against the dollar. This is another area where Zambians feel he has failed to deliver.

3. Mealie Meal Prices

The rising cost of mealie meal has been a long-standing issue. People looked to HH to ease their suffering and reduce prices. Sadly, mealie meal prices have tripled during his tenure, deepening public disappointment.

4. High Cost of Living

The cost of living had become unbearable during the PF administration, with soaring prices for basic commodities. HH was expected to tackle this issue head-on and reduce the burden on ordinary citizens. Instead, the cost of living has tripled under his leadership, further eroding his support.

Conclusion
HH’s leadership has not met the expectations of the Zambian people in these critical areas. While he was seen as a beacon of hope in 2021, his failure to deliver meaningful change has led to growing discontent and loss of trust among the populace. Today i end on four (4) points.

MEALIE MEAL: THE STAPLE FOOD IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

0

MEALIE MEAL: THE STAPLE FOOD IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

It Has Made Powerful Presidents Lose Power

Mealie meal is a staple food in Southern Africa, particularly in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and South Africa.

What is Mealie Meal?
Mealie meal is a type of cornmeal made from maize (corn) kernels that have been dried and ground into a fine or coarse flour. The kernels are typically white or yellow, and the meal can range in texture from fine to coarse.

Uses of Mealie Meal
Mealie meal is a versatile ingredient used in various traditional dishes, such as:

1. *Nshima* (Zambia) or *Sadza* (Zimbabwe): a thick cornmeal porridge, similar to polenta.
2. *Pap* (South Africa): a thin cornmeal porridge.
3. *Kenkey* (Ghana): fermented corn dough, often served with a spicy sauce.

Nutritional Value
Mealie meal is a good source of carbohydrates, fiber, and some essential minerals like iron, zinc, and potassium. However, it is often low in protein and other essential nutrients.

Cultural Significance
Mealie meal holds significant cultural and historical importance in Southern Africa, particularly in rural communities where it has been a staple food for generations.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
In Zambia this mealie meal has made powerful politicians with their political parties lose electrons when the Citizens can’t not access it due to high prices or shortages on the market.

When it is not available or people have not are they say there is hunger.

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first and most powerful president of the seven so far lost power after 27 years. This mealie meal was one of the reasons.

Edgar Lungu Zambia’s sixth president despite his Patriotic Front party having embarked on massive infrastructure development only second to Kaunda’s reign by building modern Hospitals, Schools, roads, bridges that changed the outlook of the city still lost elections in 2021. High price of mealie meal at K120 for a 25kg Breakfast bag was one of the main reasons. The main challenger Hakainde Hichilema of UPND promised to reduce the price to K50. Zambians turned up in mass and voted out Lungu making lose electrons by one million votes.

Currently under Hichilema unfortunately the price of mealie meal has tripled contrary to his campaign promise he attributes to the drought the country experienced.

The majority of the Citizens cannot avoid the price of the mealie meal. Even the local communities have to travel to urban areas to buy the commodity. Six million people are affected according to President Hichilema when he declared drought as a national drought.

Zambia will be holding the next elections in 2026 and the Zambian Eye knows that mealie meal will be a big campaign issue.

Citizens from Southern Africa have stuck to mealie meal as their traditional staple food and seems not charging anytime soon to have other alternatives. In Zambia people feel insulted to be told about this.

Zambia’s Development Stalled: Prof. Chirwa’s Vision Exposes Apathy and Incompetence

Zambia’s Development Stalled: Prof. Chirwa’s Vision Exposes Apathy and Incompetence

At the 2024 International Multi-Disciplinary Conference, renowned academic and engineer Professor Clive Chirwa laid bare Zambia’s crippling dependence on foreign aid and the blatant mismanagement of local resources. His call for innovation, education reform, and self-reliance should have been a wake-up call to a nation seemingly hell-bent on stagnation. Instead, it highlighted the stark reality of a country drowning in bureaucracy, corruption, and empty rhetoric.

In a scathing critique, Prof. Chirwa condemned Zambia’s tragic reliance on exporting raw materials, particularly copper, while failing to add any real value to these resources. “Africa produces raw materials worth billions but exports almost all of them,” he pointed out. While this statement is hardly new, it remains painfully true as Zambia continues to export copper, one of the world’s most valuable metals, with little to show for it. The government, rather than tapping into the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to bolster domestic industries, seems more concerned with lining the pockets of foreign corporations than empowering Zambians. The professor’s remarks only served to underline how far Zambia is from capitalizing on its own wealth.

Equally damning was his criticism of the education system. Prof. Chirwa lamented the failure of Zambia’s schools and universities to equip students with the skills necessary for innovation. He was blunt: “Our education system is producing graduates who cannot drive the change needed for national development.” It’s a truth that no one in power seems to acknowledge. Zambia’s education system has long been a breeding ground for mediocrity, a system that churns out graduates with outdated knowledge and no real-world problem-solving capabilities. It is no surprise that the country remains stuck in poverty while the rest of the world moves forward.

Prof. Chirwa’s suggestion that Zambia could transform itself into a hub of innovation, industrial growth, and economic empowerment was an inspiring one, but it was hard not to view it as a futile plea to a government more interested in maintaining its grip on power than in creating real change. “The solutions to our problems are within us,” he declared. Yet, Zambia’s political elites seem intent on ignoring these solutions, instead choosing to perpetuate a system of corruption, cronyism, and mismanagement. The idea that Zambia’s future could lie in local talent, as Chirwa proposed, feels like a pipe dream when the government continues to sell out the country’s resources to foreign interests without a second thought for its people.

His call for value-added industries, especially in the copper sector, was equally necessary but painfully overdue. Zambia could easily process its own copper into products like copper wire and advanced materials, keeping the wealth within the country. Instead, the political class continues to prioritize short-term gains from foreign investment, ignoring the long-term potential of domestic industries. Prof. Chirwa’s suggestions were a reminder of what could be, but one can’t help but wonder: when will the powers that be finally wake up and act?

While the conference provided an important platform for discussion, the ugly truth is that Zambia has been talking about reform and development for decades with very little to show for it. In the end, Prof. Chirwa’s keynote was just another in a long line of speeches full of promise but lacking in tangible results. The government’s failure to implement anything close to the necessary reforms is appalling.

Zambia’s future, as Prof. Chirwa pointed out, lies in the hands of its people. However, the sad reality is that Zambia’s leadership, from the highest office to the bureaucratic ranks, seems more focused on self-preservation than on securing a prosperous future for its citizens. Until those in power are willing to break free from the cycle of incompetence, corruption, and dependence, Zambia’s development will remain a distant fantasy. Time is running out.

Prestige Motors vs ZRA: unveiling the facts

Prestige Motors vs ZRA: unveiling the facts

By Daniel Mulasikwanda(The Mast)

The case involving Prestige Motors and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has garnered significant public attention.

However, many Zambians remain unaware of the intricate details surrounding this protracted dispute, which dates back to 2012. Below is an objective account of the events leading to the controversy, as well as the actions taken by ZRA and other stakeholders.

The genesis of the dispute

In 2012, Prestige Motors applied for a tax exemption from the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), claiming it intended to manufacture trucks in Zambia. Based on this application, ZRA allowed the duty-free importation of nine trucks in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form. However, in 2014, when Prestige Motors applied for tax exemptions on 39 additional CKD trucks, ZRA rejected the application. The Authority argued that assembling CKD parts did not qualify as manufacturing under Zambian tax laws. When the 39 trucks arrived in Zambia, ZRA detained them, prompting Prestige Motors to seek relief from the High Court. The court ruled in favour of Prestige Motors, ordering ZRA to release the trucks. Despite this directive, ZRA did not comply, leading Prestige Motors to sue for loss of business.

The USD 64 million High Court award

In its lawsuit, Prestige Motors claimed substantial damages and was awarded USD 64 million by the High Court of Zambia. ZRA contested this award, describing it as excessive, noting that the trucks were detained for only three weeks, and Prestige Motors’ declared annual turnover was estimated at USD 5 million. However, ZRA’s appeal was filed out of time, leaving the High Court judgment intact. At the time, key ZRA officials included Mr Berlin Msiska (then Commissioner General), Mr Dingani Banda (then Commissioner Customs, now Commissioner General), and Ms Diana Banting (Director Legal).

Negotiation and settlement

In 2017, a newly appointed ZRA Board, comprising representatives from institutions such as the Bank of Zambia (BoZ), Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA), and the Ministry of Justice, requested a comprehensive review of ongoing court cases. The Prestige Motors case was identified as a high-risk matter due to the delayed appeal and non-compliance with the earlier court order. Fearing that the damages could escalate beyond USD 64 million, the Board directed ZRA’s Legal Department to negotiate an out-of-court settlement. Following negotiations, a settlement of USD 16 million was agreed upon, effectively saving the government USD 48 million.

Payment and garnishee orders

Due to budgetary constraints, ZRA relied on the Ministry of Finance to finance the settlement in two equal installments. The first payment was made to Prestige Motors’ lawyers, but the second installment was garnished by creditors of Prestige Motors after the company failed to settle debts linked to the original USD 64 million claim.

Allegations of fraud and legal action

Subsequently, two companies alleged that Donovan Grey of Prestige Motors had forged invoices used to substantiate the USD 64 million claim. These allegations led to Donovan’s arrest by the Zambia Police, and the matter is currently before the courts.

Critical questions for Donovan Grey

The ongoing Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry into this matter raises pertinent questions that should be addressed by Donovan Grey, including:

The basis for the USD 64 million claim and the justification for the amount awarded by the High Court.

How the damages were reduced to USD 16 million during negotiations.

The origin of the invoices used in the claim and their authenticity.

Why creditors garnished the settlement funds and why Donovan has not pursued legal action against them.

The current court cases involving forged invoices.

The role of ZRA management and the Board

ZRA management acted on the directives of its Board and in compliance with court orders. Ignoring these instructions would have exposed the government to greater financial and legal risks. Prominent Board members involved in this decision included Dr Denny Kalyalya (BoZ Governor), Ms Chileshe Kapwepwe (COMESA Secretary General), and representatives from LAZ, ZICA, and the Ministry of Justice.

Conclusion

While the Prestige Motors saga has brought ZRA under scrutiny, the facts suggest that Donovan Grey’s actions warrant greater examination. Parliament, through PAC, should delve deeper into the legitimacy of Prestige Motors’ claims, the conduct of its creditors, and the fraud allegations currently before the courts. Ultimately, the real question is not whether ZRA acted responsibly by negotiating the bill down and obeying court orders but whether Mr Donavan Grey has the necessary credibility to bring a 2012 transaction in a 2024 (PAC). More importantly PAC must deal with facts, not hearsay.
