HON. MAPANI LEADS HANDOVER OF KEY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN NAMWALA

30 August 2024

Namwala Constituency celebrated a significant milestone with the official handover of four Community Development Fund (CDF) projects by the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Herbert Mapani. These projects, funded under the 2022 and 2023 CDF allocations, were completed at a combined cost exceeding 2 million Kwacha.

In his address, Hon. Mapani expressed gratitude to the Local Authority, government technocrats, and the CDF Committee for their dedication, which was instrumental in the successful completion of these projects. He also acknowledged the community members’ patience during the delays and highlighted the government’s commitment to improving education and healthcare in Namwala.

The event was held at Kapili Community School, with the other three projects being remotely handed over. Hon. Mapani officially handed over the following projects:

• Kapili Community School, Itapa Ward – K565,190.88 (2022 CDF)
• 3-Bedroom Staff House at Shimunyumbwe Community School, Chitongo Ward –
K479, 001.23 (2022 CDF)
• Mamvu OPD, Incinerator, Placenta & Ash Pit, Kabulamwanda Ward – K681, 529.31 (2022 CDF)
• Chibunze Health Post, Baambwe Ward – K600, 000.00 (2023 CDF Disaster Component)

Hon. Mapani also announced upcoming projects under the 2024 CDF allocation, including the construction of 1×3 classroom blocks, health posts, and the supply of over 3,000 school desks, and improvements in water and sanitation through borehole equipment and the procurement of a water bowser.

During the event, Senior Headman Shalanga’s representative, Headman Raphael Mukompe, expressed gratitude for the first permanent structure at Kapili Community School since its establishment in 2000. Namwala CDF Committee Chairperson, Mr. Phiri, and Kapili Community School Headteacher, Mr. Goodfellow Chatyoka, echoed these sentiments, praising the UPND government’s leadership in enhancing education in the area.

Namwala Town Council Chairperson, Cllr. Abel Moonga, thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for increasing the CDF allocation and commended MP Mapani for his hard work. He also praised the government’s social interventions to mitigate the effects of drought in the region.

Background on Kapili Community School: Established in 2000, Kapili Community School has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure. The recently completed 1×2 classroom block, funded by CDF, represents the first permanent structure at the school. This new block replaces an old, unfinished building where students previously sat on bricks in a dusty, floorless room. The old building’s flooring, roofing, and plastering have been completed with personal assistance from Hon. Mapani, who is keen to see the building fully completed.

“A WAKE-UP CALL: MY STORY OF LOSING A JOB TO AI AND THE REALITY OF TECHNOLOGICAL DISPLACEMENT”

“A WAKE-UP CALL: MY STORY OF LOSING A JOB TO AI AND THE REALITY OF TECHNOLOGICAL DISPLACEMENT”

I never thought I’d be writing this article, but here I am, a victim of the inevitable – losing my job to Artificial Intelligence (AI). After dedicating eight years of my life to Super Sport, first directly and then indirectly through Vision View, a contracted company, I found myself among over 30 colleagues who were let go at the beginning of August this year (not that im speaking on their behalf). The reason? Super Sport’s decision to use AI to broadcast MTN Super League games in Zambia, effective this season. This experience has been a harsh wake-up call, and I’m sharing my story to sound the alarm: AI is coming for your job, and it’s time to prepare.

THE RISE OF AI IN BROADCASTING

Super Sport’s move to AI-powered broadcasting is a clear indication of the industry’s shift towards automation. While AI brings efficiency and cost savings, it also poses a significant threat to jobs. In our case, AI replaced human production staff, leaving us without a role in the company.

A REALITY CHECK

My story is not unique. AI is transforming various sectors, from manufacturing to healthcare, finance, and transportation. As machines become increasingly capable of performing tasks traditionally done by humans, the risk of job displacement grows. It’s essential to acknowledge this reality and take proactive steps to avoid becoming a victim of technological displacement.

PREPARING FOR THE INVESTABLE

So, what can you do to position yourself for success in an AI-driven world?

1. UPSKILL AND RESKILL: Invest in education and training that complements AI, focusing on skills like critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence.
2. DIVERSIFY YOUR EXPERTISE: Expand your skill set to areas less likely to be automated, such as strategy, innovation, and human-centered roles.
3. STAY ADAPTABLE: Be open to new opportunities and willing to pivot when necessary.
4. EMBRACE LIFELONG LEARNING: Continuously update your knowledge and skills to remain relevant in the job market.

DID I SEE THIS COMING.?

Yes i did see it coming but maybe not this soon.

Did i prepare for this.? Partly Yes i did (Never put all your eggs in one basket has always been my practice) so im always partly prepared.

Am i bitter with super sport.? Not at all, i learnt alot from them, i got trained by the best in the industry. Outside broadcasting is amazing and im glad im a pro in that field. I travel to different countries and i have covered high profile events and tournaments and was paid well. The skill imparted in me will never die and someone somewhere still needs it.

Is this the end of the world or career? No its the begging of the new world. The AI world is here…

CONCLUSION:

Losing my job to AI has been a difficult experience, but it’s also a chance to raise awareness about the urgent need for workers to prepare for the impact of technological advancements. Don’t wait until it’s too late – take control of your future and start positioning yourself for success in an AI-driven world. Remember, AI is not just a threat; it’s also an opportunity to evolve and grow.

I just thought i should share….

PLUNDER THROUGH STATE CHAMBERS

30th August, 2024

The United Kwacha Alliance condemns the continued looting through consent judgements entered between UPND leaders, cadres and the Attorney General s’ office.  In the wake of serious corruption allegations which were made by one of the former board members of the Anti-corruption Commission, Dr. O’Brien Kaaba who cited the former Director General of the ACC Tom Shamakamba.  Dr. Kaaba highlighted shocking details of how state funds are being shared by UPND cadres through consent judgements.

Recently Mrs. Martha Mushipe, a UPND party known figure was awarded over K2 million in another bizarre consent judgement.  Again, the state has entered into another consent judgement with 17 UPND cadres. As a country we have not yet recovered from the disclosure by Dr. Kaaba and yet the people in charge of state chambers do not want to exercise restraint and prudence towards public funds.

UKA condemns the selective application of the law and favorable court judgements towards UPND Party leaders and cadres. The resources of the country are not exclusively for the UPND to enrich themselves.  We have never seen this abhorrent abuse of power by a party in Government from the time of Independence.  We challenge the Attorney General to publish consent judgements that have been awarded by past Governments and the political party the people who were awarded belonged to.  UPND should not take the civility of the Zambian people for granted.

We have seen how the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia Professor Mumba has been trekking to court, just to get gratuity he worked for and which UPND has blatantly refused to give him.  The former Vice Chancellor contributed to the development of this country through the discharge of his duties but because he is not UPND, he is not Zambian enough to get his gratuity.  President Hakainde Hichilema should show leadership and discharge his duties with transparency and fairness.  He is creating a precedence which will haunt him and that is the Zambia we do not want going forward.

The repeated utterances by the President of not getting state funds to use for party activities is proving to be a lie, the consent judgements to UPND cadres are just that, funding for the UPND party. These consent judgments represent blatant theft, facilitated through the Attorney General’s office. The compensation and awards account has essentially become a gold mine for UPND, a fundraising scheme that must be stopped by concerned Zambians.

Despite the economic hardships our people are enduring for voting for President Hichilema and the UPND, hope remains on the horizon. The wrongs of today will not go unpunished and unchallenged. A United Kwacha Alliance-led government will govern Zambia with reverence to people resources. We promise unity and inclusivity, transcending tribal and political divisions. We pledge transparency and accountability in governance, improved public services, and consistent policies to promote the welfare of all Zambians.

UPND HAS SQUANDERED THE COUNTRY BEQUEATHED TO US

UPND HAS SQUANDERED THE COUNTRY BEQUEATHED TO US.

By: Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya

UPND needs some shame on itself.

The people are now preoccupied with independence once more. UPND has created a situation where some people have the monopoly understanding what it means to be Zambian – it is a shame!

Growth, freedom and prosperity are no longer themes of now. There is nothing to grow from. Families are destroyed, communities are destroyed, business is destroyed. Government is destroyed – we are in desperate need of recreating foundations once again.

Sadly for us now, and them in the future, Simon Kapwepwe, Harry Nkumbula, Kenneth Kaunda and their cohorts aren’t coming back. It is up to us to summon their collective spirit of patriotism if we think of bequeathing to our young, a country better than we see today.

Could anyone of us argue about the presence of family with the amount of people living in our streets? What more with the amount of people going hungry for countless hours of the day each day? And if they are fortunate enough to place something in their bellys, then it is that poisonous nshima, possibly from genetically modified maize meal or from some containing excessive aflatoxins. We have desperately lost that vital sense of family.

Selfishness and greed have taken the space of family. There is no more sympathy and neither is there any more empathy. We need to rebuild that sense of family which we once had.

There are those who think that we still have freedom. For many of them, freedom is measured by the amount of force exerted on the opposition. Freedom to them is whipping everybody and coercing them to accept their idea of progress even when that idea makes no sense at all.

Should we take some time to view things from an objective angle; How can we accept that a Facebook post requires a police permit and we call that freedom? How can we accept that a National Assembly contribution by an elected representative can be needlessly curtailed at best and punishable at worst; and we call that freedom? How can government conveniently fail to put a law such as the Access to Information Act into operation even after having massive promotions at the highest level; but we still call that freedom?

UPND has made progress in eliminating business for our people. UPND has made progress in widening the divide between the haves and the have nots. UPND has made progress in externalizing our local resources. UPND has made progress in dividing the nation. UPND has made progress in enhancing hatred. UPND has made progress in destroying institutions of governance. UPND has made progress in destroying our democracy. UPND has made progress in destroying government. These are bad examples of progress.

It will be credited to them that they destroyed the very foundation that our forebears fought for and built for us to progress from. They will be an extremely poor bunch of examples for posterity.

While it is becoming increasingly difficult to see hope, I feel that it is not too late. As a country we need to lead ourselves into a new direction of hope. Time is now, for us to begin a new journey of the true meaning of progress.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

CURRENT STATE OF ZAMBIA’S AGRICULTURE SECTOR A DISASTER – DR M’MEMBE

CURRENT STATE OF ZAMBIA’S AGRICULTURE SECTOR A DISASTER – DR M’MEMBE

….says the sector needs a major boost in terms of production

Lusaka… Friday, August 30, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) President Dr Fred M’membe has described the current state of Zambia’s agriculture sector as a disaster.

Speaking during a discussion with his General Secretary Dr Cosmas Musumali on the party’s vision for agriculture and food sovereignty, Dr M’membe said the sector needs a boost in terms of production.

He said this calls for more investment in research for farmers to know the right soils.

He said agriculture is difficult and needs serious interests, financing and highest attention from the political leadership.

Dr M’membe said the country needs strong universities and research institutes that deals with Agriculture.

“…good colleges for Agriculture.  We need research institutes, it is not just chipante pante. And we are being left behind into 18 century agriculture. We need to get our best people into Agriculture and not middlemen no,” he said.

The Socialist Party President has also expressed concern over the increasing poverty levels in Zambia.

“In the census done in 2022, poverty levels moved from 54 % to 60 %….Average rural poverty moved 78.8%..Urban poverty moved from 23.4%  to 31.9 %.  Where there is poverty, there is hunger. We are in the same category with Yemen Chad and others……Without tackling poverty, and addressing the issue of Hunger, we are going nowhere.  2.9% population growth rate, our population is now doubling every after 15 years. And young people eat a lot. Now Muchinga has poverty levels of over 82%,…….. Northern 78%, Luapula with 77.3%, Lusaka 27%. CB 35.8%,” he said.

He said 65% of the population is employed in Agriculture yet the sector is contributing a paltry 3% to Zambia’s GDP.

Dr M’membe said this is an indication of poverty that exists especially in rural areas.

He said for this poverty to reduce, there is need to increase the farmers contribution to the GDP, a feat which he says requires drastic measures and a serious commitment.

“If the poor are spending their income on food, it means they are working for food. Everyday you are hand to mouth, whatever you have worked for sometimes is not even enough. There is no dignity in hunger. The production side of Agriculture has to be managed. It is not enough to give a peasant farmer seed and then tell them that go and produce. It is not about the market, it is about production,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr M’membe said the country is in a crisis when it comes to Fish Farming.

“An increasing number of our people are becoming more reliant on Chicken, Kapenta has become more expensive for most people. People are turning to Chicken. There was a time we were heavily dependnentant on Fish for proteins, 75% of the people were relying on Fish protein. Today that is becoming increasingly  difficult.

“Our stock of Fish is gone, we are only getting 25%. We are importing Fish Tilapia. But that Fish is a dangerous species of Fish. That Fish is tough, hard and destroying our indigenous Fish species. Although Government talks about Fish Farming, when you get into fish Farming, there is nothing you get out of it. We are in a crisis, there is no Fish Farming that we can talk about,” Dr M’membe said.

He said Zambia should emulate countries like Thailand where Universities have taken the lead in matters to do with Fish Farming and production.

Dr M’membe said the current situation where top Universities have nothing to do with Fish Farming is sad.

“We have not invested anything and we think just digging a hole and pouring water there, and throwing some fingerings and say you have become a fish farmer. The success stories are very few,  and our production costs are very high.

“You can’t compete with imported Fish. And we are not paying attention to the indigenous species. We are not investing. Our leading universities have got nothing to do with Fish Farming. NRDC has got a department dealing with that, but very backward. We are talking big but there is nothing we are doing. Yes, companies are doing well in cage Fish Farming, but very little beyond that.”

German Interim report rules out foul play in Chilima, eight others plane crash

0

The much-awaited plane crash preliminary report shows no evidence of foul play involved on the fateful day and had heavily linked the accident to “heavy clouds and turbulence.”

The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation has released a report on the aircraft accident at Chikangawa Forest that killed former vice president, late Dr Saulos Chilima and eight others.

The report, published by Germany Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, vividly shows that the plane crash, which killed former Vice President Saulos Chilima and 8 others, was “not survivable.”

The 19-page report, which is now viral on social media, shows that the aircraft was manufactured in 1987 and had many of its key equipment and machines archaic and not maintained to the expected standards for it to be airborne.

The interim report mentions poor weather, including low visibility, clouds, and fog near the destination airport in Mzuzu, adding that the flight crew had difficulty navigating through these conditions, which could have led to spatial disorientation or an inability to maintain a safe flight path.

It also says there was a delay in locating Veep’s plane due to Faulty Equipment used for searching.

The plane’s emergency transmitter locator, according to the report, had malfunctioned due to a corresponding malfunctioning of the battery since the year 2004.

The Iaircraft made several unexplained turns and altitude changes before the crash, suggesting possible confusion or difficulty in navigation, reads the report.

The report also notes outdated information on radio navigation aids, which could have affected the crew’s ability to navigate safely.

The report, therefore, puts to rest finger pointing and unnecessary speculation as well as accusations, at least foe now, pointing to a possible foul play to kill those on board.

Malawian security expert Sheriff Kaisi earlier told the media that transparency was needed in the investigations to win the confidence of Malawians.

The plane left the capital Lilongwe at 09:17 a.m. (0717 GMT) on a Monday but was unable to land at Mzuzu airport as scheduled at 10:02 a.m. due to poor visibility.

It was ordered to return to Lilongwe but went off the radar and aviation authorities could not make contact with it.

Addressing Malawians on June 11, 2024, through a televised statement, President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera-who had on countless occasions used the fateful plane on his official engagements across the country-said all passengers on board were killed on impact

Details provided in the interim report show that the aircraft had been flying without Cockpick Voice Recorder or Flight Data Recorder, which it says were not required by relevant regulatory regulations.

The battery of its Emergency Transmission Locator is also said to have long expired in 2004 and according Malawi Defence Force, there were no spare parts or budget for replacement.

The report clearly shows that the plane did not reach Mzuzu Airport.

Briefly, the interim report does not explicitly state a definitive cause for the crash of the Dornier 228-202(K) aircraft. However, several factors likely contributed to the accident:

Marginal Weather Conditions: The report mentions poor weather, including low visibility, clouds, and fog near the destination airport in Mzuzu. The flight crew had difficulty navigating through these conditions, which could have led to spatial disorientation or an inability to maintain a safe flight path.

Lack of Functional Emergency Equipment: The aircraft’s Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) was non-functional because its battery had expired in 2004, hindering the ability to locate the crash site quickly. The lack of a Cockpit Voice Recorder or Flight Data Recorder also made it difficult to understand the crew’s actions and decisions leading up to the crash.

Navigation Issues: The aircraft made several unexplained turns and altitude changes before the crash, suggesting possible confusion or difficulty in navigation. The report also notes outdated information on radio navigation aids, which could have affected the crew’s ability to navigate safely.

Inadequate Radar Coverage: There was no radar contact with the aircraft at low altitudes, which may have prevented air traffic controllers from providing timely assistance or warnings.

The investigation is ongoing, and the final report would likely provide a more detailed analysis of the contributing factors.

Col Namwawa Elected African Military Law Forum President

By Buffalo Reporter

At the just ended African Military Law Forum
(AMLF) held at  Intercontinental hotel in Lusaka, Zambia Army Lawyer wins, not a case, but the Presidency of the African Military Law Forum.

After going unopposed, Colonel Mwizukanji Namwawa, who is also Zambia Army Deputy Director General, Legal Services Branch will be at the helm of the forum for the next two years.

The AMLF is an organisation composed of dedicated African legal professionals serving in the military or working in Ministries of Defence or Justice.

Initiated in March 2014 in Malawi as a forum to gather senior level African military legal advisors from across the African Continent, the AMLF,s goal is that of bringing together African Military Legal Advisors from 54 African Nations to discuss legal topics of interest, propose model solutions, and exchange ideas on how to improve military operational adherence to the Rule of Law.

The soft spoken Col Namwawa takes over the mantle from Major Abel Motaung (Rtd) of the Botswana Defence Force.

With a deep smile, Col Namwawa said she is honoured to be elected as President of the AMLF stating that her administration will strive to create a sustainable funding stream to successfully run the affairs of the institution.

“Obviously we have a mammoth task ahead. We are taking over from sound legal minds who have run the Forum on minimal budgets; therefore we intend to initiate sustainable sources of funding henceforth,” she said.

The Seventh edition of the African Military Law Forum whose deliberations began, Tuesday, 26 August, 2024, closed yesterday, 29 August, 2024.

The four-day legal forum discussed different topics, with great emphasis on the role of legal advisors in the deployment of troops in peace operations as conflict threaten stability across the rich continent of Africa.

The Forum attracted over 50 participants, clad in their incredible uniforms from 30 African countries.

Zambia Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Msitu Nyoni officiated at closing of the 7th edition of the forum where he presented certificates to the participants.

Lt Gen Nyoni emphasised the upholding of principles of justice in military operations, stating that legal practitioners are integral in military justice dispensation, hence the need for them to serve humanity diligently.

THE WAGES OF ‘SIN’ ARE JAILABLE IN ZAMBIA

THE WAGES OF ‘SIN’ ARE JAILABLE IN ZAMBIA

Amb. Anthony Mukwita 30th Aug

I read somewhere that the wages of sin in Zambia will soon be jailable for up to five years—that is regarding a planned legislation against cybercrimes.

This ominous announcement was made by Mr. Jack Mwiimbu the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security flanked by Science and Technology counterpart Mr. Felix Mutati early in the week.

I watched that early morning presser by the two as Mwiimbu said the incoming law that will enhance the already existing law is aimed at ´protecting´ Zambians from all manner of abuse by cyber bullies and even criminals.

I had a slight stich of laughter on my mouth as the presser rolled on because I recalled vividly that pre-2021 controversial polls in Zambia, Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa, current government spokesman then UPND spokesman described the cyber law under President Edgar Lungu as repulsive.

Hell, the law was so repugnant according to Cornelius that the first thing his government and Don H would do on top of the ´to do list´ would be to scrap it, finito.
It took away Zambians freedoms , aid Cornelius high on opposition steroid power and bluster.

Unless Zambians have short memories, what I speak is truth and nothing but truth hence the reason I can’t wrap my head around extemporaneous statements from Cornelius, Mwiimbu and Mutati today.

It’s like one cynic said, “*the more things change in Zambia, the more they remain the same.”*
I wonder why something that was so wrong under President Lungu suddenly becomes so right under Don HH, don’t you?

What has changed between 2021 and 2023 brother Cornelius and uncle Jack?
Are there pangas on the cyber streets you must remove by tightening the noose around the Law you said you would scrap on day one because it was a bad law?
Are we under a state of emergency or leaving in Nazi Germany or past Soviet Russia era where Dictators like Hitler and Stalin controlled, not only how citizens thought but spoke?

Is there something you don’t wanna hear from the electorate such as the crippling and escalating cost of mealie meal and acute prolonged power blackouts going beyond 24 hours in some neighbourhoods today?
Sadly, in a democracy, people have one major fundamental right and that is the right to speak freely without being curtailed via some primitive stone-age legislation sir.

You can only shut people up in a dictatorship, autocracy or absolute monarch.
If the law was ok when you were in opposition and Rome didn’t burn down, why tighten the noose today and decide to ´police´ the cyber space.

I shuddered when I watched Mutati the quota matic say, “on the internet today there´s what is called a ´digital footprint´ which you leave every time you post something so we shall use that to smoke you out and catch you.”

I bet he learnt that line from watching a George W Bush presser against terrorists after 9/11.
It didn’t sound original.

I am for law and order,  please don’t get me wrong,  and the gentlemen said they are passing this law to jail you and I for five years once found guilty, only if we  break the law.

They are worried that some Zambians are posting stuff that could set the country on flames and deep the nation into a sizzling pot of instability of insurmountable magnitude of war, and I share the concern because I love my peace and as the Bembas say “mwikala patalala mwiine apatalika.”

My major gripe is who will decide whether what I have posted is insidious, inflammatory and or seditious?
Do you catch my drift?

There are so many grey areas here nothing stops any UPND chappie with a badge that hates Mukwita from arresting me over a made-up crime under the new cyber law, for absolutely nothing.

Why can’t we ´police´ cybercrime using the existing laws that have seen Sean Tembo thrown into Cell 9 where it leaks and has beetles or Chilufya Tayali, Why Me etc?

North Korea, China, Ethiopia, Iran, Eritrea, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cuba according to the Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ has the worst incomprehensive and degenerate media laws like the one Mwiimbu plans to introduce to Zambia.

If you take a casual glance, you find that most of the countries CPJ has fingered are either at war or under a dictatorship, Zambia is not, yet its about to walk this long road of shame in the 21st century, even when people more intelligent than myself have in the past opined that ´if it aint broke, don’t fix it.”

In my humble view as an international relations analyst, diplomat and published author, Mwiimbu must try his hand at fixing the more than 24-hour long power absence, the expensive meal, the acute joblessness and acute poverty including but not restricted to giving hope to the six million Zambians whom OXFAM says face starvation and possible death due to shortages of maize partially induced by exports.

Writing a new law at a poverty time like now is like the *tail wagging the dog*  it makes no sense and infact shows desperation on the part of the UPND to shut down dissenters.

When I wear my diplomatic hat, it gives Zambian a bad name of ‘rogue state’ written in rancour, it smacks of autocracy.

Priority if I was on the A Team of Don H would be to fix the endemic poverty in Zambia which smells now and is visible on the faces of many people going to sleep hungry.

The saying is that when a nation wants to chart a dictatorial or autocratic path, it scape-goats, targets the legislature, the judiciary and police and finally free speech and association.
Ask not whom the bell tolls for fellow Zambians, it tolls for thee!

Censor yourself real hard next time you write anything that goes on the internet in case you annoy the powers that be. You could be jailed for five years.
I warned you that you gotta be strong to read my column to the end. I rest my case.

DIESEL GENERATORS TO BE INSTALLED AT SOWETO, CHILENJE AND YUMBA YANGA MARKETS THIS WEEK

Today, Energy Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba held a press briefing to update the nation on the energy situation in the country.

UPDATE ON THE DIESEL GENERATORS

✅ Government through the Ministry of Energy disclosed that the first consignment of nine (9) out 23 diesel generators procured have now arrived in the country.

✅ In this regard, the remaining 14 diesel generators are expected to arrive in the country in the coming week.

✅ The nine diesel generators that have been received so far will be installed this week beginning with two (2) at Chilenje and Nyumba Yanga markets while another two will be installed at Soweto market.

✅ Therefore, the installation of all the 23 diesel generators will be completed by 30th September, 2024.

POWER IMPORTS

✅The Permanent Secretary stated that in addition to the 168MW emergency power imports already secured from ESKOM of South Africa, as announced in the last briefing, additional 50MW of emergency power imports has now been secured from Southern African power Pool (SAPP), and started flowing on the 24th of August 2024.

✅ Meanwhile, Mr. Mumba said during this week, the nation has been experiencing power transfer constraints in the Southern Circuit via Namibia, which has resulted in reduced power imports of about 100 Mega Watts (MW), causing increased hours of load shedding in some locations.

✅In this regard, the converter fault on the Namibian power importation route was resolved at midnight (last night), and a relative network stability is expected going forward.
✅ As at today, the country’s power generation levels stand at 1,019 MW with the demand OF 2,400 MW, leaving a deficit of 1,381 MW.

✅ Government continues to work round the clock to find solutions to improve power supply and keep the wheels of our economy running.

ZESCO TARIFF APLLICATION

✅ Following the Energy Regulation Board’s (ERB) decision to reject the ZESCO emergency upward tariff application, government has taken keen interest on this matter and is seeking alternative means and ways to support ZESCO limited.

✅To this end, Government through the Ministry of Energy will announce how ZESCO will be supported following the recommendations of the Energy Regulation Board.

NET METERING

✅ And Mr. Mumba added that following the signing of the electricity Net Metering Regulations into law, ERB has now published the Net Metering and connection fees to enable the public to participate as producers and consumers of electricity on the national grid and support the country’s solar uptake.

✅ The ERB has determined k1.59 Per Kilowatt hour as the net metering tariff and that the distribution use-of-system (UOS) charge shall not exceed 39 ngwee per kilowatt hour. ERB has determined that these tariffs will apply until 31st December 2024, at which point they may be reviewed.

✅ A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed just two days ago with power china with a view to establish a robust framework for development of power projects as well as ensure stability and security of power supply.

✅ The Permanent Secretary has since appealed to energy intensive consumers to optimize production schedules and to deploy alternative sources of energy, where available, to aid grid relief

Are you Jay Jay Banda’s co-self-abductor/abductor? Commit suicide like Judas Iscariot!- Austin Mbozi

Are you Jay Jay Banda’s co-self-abductor/abductor? Commit suicide like Judas Iscariot!

By Austin Mbozi

I am writing to you who is HIDDING after you participated in the ‘self-abduction’ or real abduction of Petauke MP Jay Jay Banda.

Yes, Jay Jay is quite irresponsible and may even have broken laws. But your abducting him with or without his consent is not only illegal but also stupid. Just go and commit suicide. The Biblical Judas Escariot had a better moral conscious than you. Judas only betrayed Jesus by accepting money (like the current Zambia Police’s ‘catch-Jay-Jay-for -K2 million’ offer) to assist them in arresting him. But he did not participate in abducting Jesus. Yet, he felt guilty and committed suicide. But you participated, causing many people arrested. Yet you are walking around with your big empty head just because police have not arrested you. Is your woman okay? She closes her eyes sleeping next to you with no knowledge of what you did? Not fearing you? No feeling of guilty, drinking tea bought with dirty money from your abduction?

Obviously, you may plot against me for writing this. Well, be ready that it is either you or me to kiss dust in the grave in the process. I am a veteran fighter from the ‘UNZA PF-thief-thug stooges verses Austin Mbozi’ rumble of the jungle war. I have lost everything but developed a stronger soul which you cannot kill. You can’t scare even a fly. Can you defeat that remand prison bullying ‘commander Galeduo’ like I did?

First, you are a thoughless empty-head. If Jay Jay asked you to help in his self-abduction in order to accuse/discredit the UPND leadership, did your empty head not ask what if some thieves killed him where you left him at night near Chita Lodge in Kafue? If Jay Jay assured you that he had planted somebody to immediately pick him and take him to Kafue District Hospital, then why did you not fear the possibility that police would see the publicity and pick him from hospital and arrest him for faking his abduction?

If it was not Jay Jay abducting himself, then it is you a UPND overzealous who adducted him. All probabilities show that President HH, home affairs minister Jack Mwiimbu and the police IG were certainly NOT involved. Such top level bosses’ ‘operation’ cannot fail like that petty ‘kaponya’ level Jay Jay one. The US killed Congo’s Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and overthrew Ghana’s President Kwame Nkrumah through the CIA. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Vladimir Putin of Russia are accused of succeeding using smart secret intelligence. Even dull Adi Amin of Uganda killed deputy commander Brigadier Okoro and Chief Justice Benedicto Kiwanuka (September 1972). No traces. Malawi’s dictator Kamuzu Banda adducted Orton Chirwa/his wife from exile in Zambia and jailed them.

It seems as a cadre UPND abductor you heard that police were planning to arrest Jay Jay for his PF-era crimes. Because your empty head has no brilliant developmental ideas that can attract favourable attention from the UPND top lesdership, you decided to abduct him yourself hoping to please them. You have failed. If your intention was to hand him over to police, then what made you think that you would immediately find the specific officer assigned to arrest him? Does your head not know that police officers cannot arrest somebody unless at least they have in mind what ‘holding charge’ to enter in the OB book? Could it be that after you realised that the officers at the nearest station could not understand why you ‘arrested’ him, you drove him away towards Kafue wondering what to do with him? Or was it your intention to fish out information about former President Edgar Lungu? If so, what was your Plan B in the event that he refused to give information?

Second, you have made many people to suffer; their household and political leaders are under arrest. You pushed the following defenders of Jay Jay into acts that got them arrested for allegedly breaking the law: Lumezi MP Munir Zulu for hate speech, Mfuwe MP Maureen Mubonga for hate speech, former finance minister Edith Nawakwi for seditious practices, and civil rights activist Brebner Changala for seditious practices. If you helped in self-abduction in order to help PF/UKA in accusing/decamping UPND, you are a liability to this same PF/UKA because you have made them lose their leaders facing jail.

Third, if you abducted to appease top UPND leaders, you are a liability to UPND because you have actually de-campaigned its decent leaders. The fact is that many Zambians do believe that UPND participated in or worsened this saga. Some think UPND-led police spread out its rivalry with PF/UKA thief-thugs by including other opposition leaders in arrests over indefensible charges, extremists think UPND actually did the abduction while some think that UPND/police made the mistake of arresting Jay Jay for old crimes by receiving him directly from the abduction/self abduction instead of releasing him first and then arrest him separately for those crimes. This last group wonders why his abduction/self abduction should coincide with his formal arrest. This wondering intensifies by police’s failure to reveal how and with whom Jay Jay adducted himself. UPND will face difficulty in winning over voters in the constituencies of the effected MPs or votes of their friends and extended families.

Fourth, you have caused arrest of the following officers for allegedly helping Jay Jay escape from Chipata’s Namuseche Prison via Chipata Central Hospital: Phineas Mfungwe (Zambia Police), Benson Kabole (Zambia Police), Moses Sakala (Zambia Prisons), Nathan Mbao (Zambia Prisons) and Musa Spider Zulu (Zambia Prisons)

Fifth, because of you Jay Jays’ family is fatherless with his escape; and motherless when his wife Lombe Chiti is arrested for allegedly aiding Jay Jay’s escape.

The author advises UPND and opposition leaders to cut off their associations with Jay Jay’s self-abduction helpers or abductors to avoid drowning with them. Phone: 0978-741920. Email: austin.mbozi2017@gmail.com

Chilima’s Phone Signal After Crash Sparks Mystery

0

A devastating plane crash that claimed the lives of former Malawi vice president Saulos Chilima and eight others has raised serious concerns about the country’s aviation safety standards.

A preliminary report by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Investigation (BFU) has revealed a shocking pattern of gross negligence on the part of authorities.

The report states that the Malawi Defence Force-owned Dornier 228-202(K) was not airworthy due to several factors. For instance, the report says the aircraft had a malfunctioning Emergency Transmitter Locator (ETL).

The ETL’s batteries had expired in 2004, making it difficult for the rescuers to locate the crash site in Chikangawa Forest. This alarming discovery raises questions about the regulatory and thoroughness of maintenance of aircraft in Malawi.

The report says the crash happened in Chikangawa forest at 10:16 am on 10 June 2024.

Apart from that, the report also reveals that the plane was not fitted with a Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder(FDR), which contributed to the investigator’s ability to reconstruct the events leading to the accident. Additionally, there were no flight data recordings for the flight, further complicating the investigations.

The report has, however, clarified the possibility of the plane running out of fuel. The report says the plane had enough fuel to fly the plane for 2 hours and 30 minutes as it had refuelled upon its arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) from Mzuzu.

“The plane was refueled at KIA after landing from Mzuzu Airport. The provided fuel receipt showed that at KIA, the aeroplane was refuelled with 483 jet A fuel before departure to Mzuzu Airport.

The aircraft, manufactured in 1987 by General Atomics AeroTec systems, had accumulated 3, 492 flight hours. While not directly necessarily a direct cause of the accident, the age of the aircraft, coupled with issues like the non-functional ELT, raises concerns about the overall maintenance ace practices for the fleet.

An investigation conducted by the BFU and facilitated by Jens Friedemann and Dr Susan Winkler has therefore suggested safety recommendations to the Government of Malawi to avoid similar occurrences in the future.

The report has asked the Minister of Defence in Malawi to ensure that the Malawi Air Transportation persons are equipped with functional Emergency Locator Transmitters.

It further cautions the Department of Civil Aviation to always check that there are proper functional radio navigation aids and update the respective information in Malawi Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP).

The report’s findings are a wake-up call for the Malawian authorities to take immediate action to address the systemic failures that led to the tragic incident.

TRAVIS SCOTT SLAMMED BY SABRINA CARPENTER OVER ‘DAYS BEFORE RODEO’ BONUS RELEASE

Travis Scott has been called out by his chart rival Sabrina Carpenter after releasing several bonus editions of his Days Before Rodeo mixtape.

Scott and the “Espresso” pop star are locked in a tight battle for number one on the Billboard 200 with the Houston rapper dropping a variety of new versions of the re-released mixtape today (August 30).

The first bonus is titled Days Before Rodeo – Live from Atlanta: Chopped & Screwed – Vault 1 & 2 and features previously unheard snippets from the tape’s recording sessions as well as the recent anniversary performance Scott put on in Atlanta.

He then announced three deluxe versions of the mixtape, each featuring two new songs and all available exclusively through his website.

The move did not go unnoticed by Carpenter who wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This is for Nicki,” a reference to Scott beating out Nicki Minaj to number one in 2018 with his Astroworld album.

Minaj then returned the love to the pop star, saying on Instagram Live: “Shout out Sabrina Carpenter, shout out all the Sabrina Carpenter fans.”

Minaj was famously beaten to the top of the Billboard 200 in 2018 by Scott with her not taking second place well, accusing the “Goosebumps” rapper of gaming the system with his bundle offers.

On Queen Radio, she ranted: “What we’re not gonna do is have that Auto-Tune man selling fucking sweaters. Telling you he sold half a million albums, because he fucking didn’t. You stupid fuck. You got your fucking homeboy talking for you and you got your girlfriend selling tour passes. Stop it. Knock it the fuck off.”

The chart battle between the Days Before Rodeo re-release and Carpenter’s debut Sweet N’ Sour is expected to be a closely run thing.

Midweek estimates had Carpenter shifting over 300,000 equivalent units with Scott thought to be lagging behind on 217,000 but it was expected for the gap to close as the week progressed due to “FEIN” star’s strong streaming presence.

Whether it tops the chart or not, Scott’s re-release is expected to outsell virtually every other Hip Hop release from 2024. If it continues its late surge, Days Before Rodeo may even top Eminem‘s The Death of Slim Shady as having the biggest first week sales of any rap album this year.

Michael Jackson’s bodyguard reflects on abuse allegations and what he believes led to star’s death

0

Michael Jackson’s former bodyguard, Bill Whitfield, has shared his thoughts on the child sex abuse allegations that plagued the King of Pop, as well as his belief about what contributed to Jackson’s death.

In an interview with The Sun on what would have been Jackson’s 66th birthday on August 29, Whitfield revealed that the pop icon was deeply affected by the accusations against him, describing Jackson as “sad and lost” before his death in 2009.

Whitfield, who began working as Jackson’s bodyguard in 2006, insisted that the singer would “never hurt a child,” and said , “This isn’t the man I knew.” He stated that if there was any truth to the allegations, it would have been apparent to those who spent time with Jackson.

“I was with him daily and saw his genuine love for children and people of all races,” Whitfield told the newspaper. “It wasn’t in his character. You had to be around him to know him, and I was there. So no, that wasn’t him”, he told The SUN.

According to a Daily Mail report, Jackson, who passed away in 2009, was first accused of child molestation in 1993 when the Los Angeles Police Department investigated claims that he molested 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. Although the case was dropped after Jackson settled for $23 million, the allegations resurfaced in 2003 when Jackson was charged again with child molestation.

In 2005, Jackson then faced trial over accusations made by Gavin Arvizo, who claimed Jackson had given him and his brother alcohol, showed them pornography, and masturbated in front of them. Jackson was acquitted of all charges in June 2005, but the intense scrutiny and public fallout took a toll on the artist.

Following the trial, Jackson withdrew from major performances, but in 2009 he announced a comeback tour, This Is It. However, his health deteriorated, hindering rehearsal sessions. Three weeks before the tour was set to begin, Jackson died of a drug overdose.

Whitfield reflected on Jackson’s final days, acknowledging that the singer was under immense pressure. “He was definitely stressed out. And stress kills,” Whitfield said, adding that he often wondered if Jackson’s death was deliberate but ultimately believes it was a combination of external pressures and stress.

“There were so many people who wanted to be near him and so many who wanted something from him. That can be overwhelming,” he explained. “I certainly believe the level of stress he was going through on a personal and business level played a part.”

Despite the controversies surrounding Jackson’s life, Whitfield said he remembers him with pride, knowing that he witnessed the greatness of one of the most influential performers in music history.

KANYE WEST LOSES TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SALE OF GUTTED MALIBU MANSION

Kanye West has finally offloaded the Malibu mansion he’d gutted, reportedly in order to create a bomb shelter – and he’s taking a major financial loss in the process.

Ye bought the home for $57.3 million just three years ago in 2021, sunk money into it to gut it, abandoned the project, and then listed it for $53 million late last year. He later slashed the price because no one was biting.

TMZ reported Monday (August 26) that a California-based “real estate crowdfunding firm” named Belwood Investments purchased the property earlier this month for $21 million, which makes for a nearly $40 million loss. The deal is set to close on September 3.

In a statement, Belwood’s CEO Bo Belmont said: “This is not just a phenomenal real estate investment; it is an opportunity to revitalize and preserve an architectural gem by the renowned Tadao Ando, ensuring it remains a jewel of Malibu.”

According to the report, Belmont plans to invest $5 million into the property to try to restore it to its original design before Kanye stripped it down.

Built in 2013, the mansion overlooks the Pacific Ocean and leans heavily on its concrete architecture throughout. Ando is reportedly one of Kanye West’s favorite designers and that played a role in Yeezy’s post-Donda purchase – though not much of the design was left after Ye was done with it. In fact, the home currently lacks running water, electricity, and even walls.

A source alleged to be close to the rapper told The Daily Mail in December that after all the work, Kanye West didn’t want the place anymore because the walls aren’t the right color.

“Ye prefers earth tones, muddy colors from silt to loam but never too cold and nothing visually draining like a clay,” the source told the outlet on Sunday (December 31). “Architects and designers working for Ye have in the past been dispatched to collect soil samples from the UK, France, and elsewhere as color references for his iconic looks.”

The source continued: “Unfortunately, the concrete settled into more of a cadet gray and he was hoping for a warmer tone, more of dovetail gray or coachman’s cape. Ye would only visit the house at sunrise and sunset when he said the color didn’t irritate him so much. Eventually, he stopped going altogether.”

Ye was also sued by the former project manager of the home last September following a disagreement over his alleged unusual demands.

man shot his ex-wife and her man inside their home on Wednesday, then told his daughter her mother was dead

0

A man shot his ex-wife and her man inside their million-dollar Long Island home on Wednesday, August 28, then told his daughter her mother was dead, cops and family said.

Daniel Coppola, 50, allegedly shot down the front door and shot the couple — Kelly Coppola, 50, and Kenneth Pohlman, 53 — while they slept in their St. James home around 11:45 p.m., according to law enforcement sources and Pohlman’s kin.

Moments earlier, he warned his daughter to stay in his car outside 21 Brasswood Road.

“He leaves her in the car, goes behind the bush … and evidently he broke down the door, went up [and] did what he did,” Pohlman’s grieving dad, Kenneth Pohlman Sr., told reporters outside the couple’s home.

“[He] came back and told his daughter, “I killed your mother and Kenny.’ That’s what he told her.”

Daniel Coppola then fled the gruesome scene while their shocked teen daughter, whom he shared with his ex-wife, reached out to her friends, Detective Lt. Kevin Breyer said.

“As he’s driving her, she is communicating with friends via text saying, ‘I don’t know what my father did. I don’t know how my mother is,’” Breyer added.

Her friends called her mother but were unable to get in touch with her, leading them to call 911.

Daniel Coppola was later arrested at his St. James home about a mile away from the blood-soaked scene and is under mental evaluation after making suicidal statements, police said.

He’s been slapped with two counts of second-degree murder, according to Suffolk County Police Department.

The bloodshed came after the former couple finalized their divorce a year or two ago, according to Breyer.

“Apparently the divorce is final [and] apparently it was a contentious divorce,” he added, without elaborating.

Police said there was no order of protection issued against the bitter ex, but they were called for a non-criminal dispute between the pair while they were married.

Meanwhile, Pohlman’s family referred to the former husband as an abusive “maniac.”

“From what she would say, he abused her,” Kenneth Pohlman’s grieving brother, Tom Pohlman, told reporters.

Pohlman met Kelly after losing his wife to cancer several years ago, his brother said.

His family remembered him as a romantic who plastered love letters on his bedroom wall.

Kelly Coppola and Pohlman shared the six-bedroom, four-bath, $1.1 million home, officials said.

A friend of Pohlman’s, Geoff Boyle, remembered him as a “great family man” and “awesome workout buddy.”

“He didn’t show up at the gym this morning,” he told News 12 Long Island.

“I shot him a text and I got no response from him. Now I know why.”

His family was left grappling with the sudden loss.

“Her ex-husband shot down his door and ran upstairs and shot him and her point blank,” Tom Pohlman said.

Kremlin tries to calm fears over security of Telegram after arrest of founder Durov in France

0

The Kremlin is trying to calm fears that the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France could upend the messaging platform, which is extremely popular in Russia and plays a key role in coordinating the war effort in Ukraine.

Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that calls for users to delete their sensitive messages on the app, including from the editor of Russia’s state-run RT news, were “utterly stupid.”

Peskov added that though the allegations against Durov, who was born in Russia but also has citizenship in France and the United Arab Emirates, were “serious,” French authorities would have to put forward “equally serious” evidence to back them up.

“Otherwise, there will be a direct attempt to restrict freedom of communication. And we can even say direct intimidation of the head of a large company. Which means there will be politics involved, something that Mr. Macron denied yesterday,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin’s move to assuage concerns over the future safety of Telegram underscores how important the app has become to Russia’s military.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said the decision to bring charges against Durov was “in no way political,” a rare move as French leaders often avoid discussing criminal cases to avoid any suggestion of politics influencing judicial affairs.

The Paris prosecutor’s office on Monday announced a litany of charges against Durov, including allegations that his platform was complicit in aiding money launderers, drug traffickers and people spreading child pornography. Prosecutors also accused Durov of refusing to comply with French authorities’ demand for help intercepting potentially illicit communications.

At a news conference in Moscow following talks with his Yemeni counterpart on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged, without proof, that “Durov was clearly taken away on someone’s advice and is being threatened with terrible punishment, apparently hoping to somehow gain access to encryption codes.”

With around 950 million users, Telegram is one of the world’s most popular messaging apps. Its strong end-to-end encryption, limited content moderation and functionality — it allows users to share larger files, longer videos and higher-quality photos than many of its competitors — has made it extremely popular in both countries where freedom of speech is curtailed and in war zones, including in Ukraine, where it has become a vital tool for Ukrainian officials to share military updates and warnings about air raids.

“It is very convenient, it is very secure,” Lavrov said.

Those same features have also made Telegram a key communication tool for the Russian military and pro-Kremlin bloggers. One popular pro-Russian war blogger with more than 780,000 followers reshared a post saying that France’s decision to arrest Durov meant that “in essence, the head of communications for the Russian Armed Forces was detained.”

Another less-followed military blogger posted a picture with the words “for Pavel” on a missile presumably bound for Ukraine, which on Monday was hit by the largest aerial attack since the war began.

The blogger, Aleksei Sukonkin, said that Telegram is “the basis of military communications,” even if Russian government officials publicly dispute the claim.

“Telegram is a powerful, alternative to the official, and of course, more efficient information resource; telegram is also the main civilian messenger in Russia, practically uncontrolled by Western intelligence agencies, as well as a powerful advertising resource and a platform for personal blogs,” Sukonkin said. “All this is under threat.”

Telegram’s popularity with pro-Russian military bloggers and the Kremlin’s active support for Durov is somewhat surprising considering the tech entrepreneur refused to supply Moscow with data from users of his previous enterprise, a Facebook-like social media network called Vkontakte (VK).

Durov later resigned as VK’s CEO and sold hiis shares for millions of dollars. Both he and Telegram are now based in Dubai.

Trump’s new indictment rocks his newly reshaped race against Kamala Harris

Special counsel Jack Smith defiantly re-injected the question of Donald Trump’s bid to steal the 2020 election into the intensifying end game of this year’s White House race.

By trying to rescue his case after his initial indictment was gutted by the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling, Smith signaled that he is determined to bring the former president to justice — even though there will be no trial before Election Day.

“I think this is basically Jack Smith saying, ‘I still got this’” former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a CNN legal and national security commentator, said after the special counsel on Tuesday filed a modified indictment endorsed by a new grand jury.

His move underscored the huge personal investment Trump has in winning the presidency in November: He not only would return to the nation’s top office but would also gain the authority to halt this and another federal case against him and head off any sentences that could include jail time if he is convicted.

“This is a very big year, it is a very important election,” former federal prosecutor Ankush Khardori told CNN’s Alex Marquardt on Tuesday. “This case is at stake in the election, because if Trump wins, it is going away. If Trump loses to Harris, this case is going to proceed to some sort of conclusion.”

The conservative majority’s ruling earlier this summer that Trump could be covered by immunity from criminal prosecution for some of his actions as president represented one of the most consequential moments in Supreme Court history and has massive implications for the US system of government. Many mainstream scholars blasted the decision as contrary to the spirit of the country’s founders in that it appeared to hand significant unchecked powers to the presidency.

The decision also sent shockwaves through an already tumultuous presidential race, since it appeared to offer an ex-president who already believed he was all powerful the chance to pursue strongman rule if he wins November’s election. Democratic nominee Kamala Harris criticized the decision in her convention speech last week: “Consider, the power he will have … Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails, and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States.”

Smith’s move also creates other profound political, legal, and constitutional overtones at a critical national moment, 10 weeks from an election that could profoundly reshape the country and that may again test its institutions to the limit.

What’s in the new indictment

The facts and the evidence of Smith’s case haven’t changed. The indictment still charges Trump with conspiracies to defraud the government system that counts election votes and to corrupt and obstruct the process of certifying Joe Biden’s victory. It also accuses him of hatching a conspiracy against the bedrock right of citizens to cast a vote and have it counted.

But in deference to the Supreme Court ruling, Smith removed language that alleges that Trump used the Justice Department to promote his claims of electoral fraud. And he attempted to style much of the remaining alleged conduct as that of a “candidate” rather than a president acting in his official capacity, to get around the issue at the center of the court’s ruling.

But his case still faces huge obstacles. Presiding District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan must now interpret the high court’s ruling to decide which evidence remains admissible. And the ex-president’s legal team will fight Smith at every turn and use every appellate option available. The Trump legal and campaign team may accuse him of infringing Justice Department custom to avoid proceedings against key political figures so close to an election. Of course, the reason the original version of the case did not go to trial long before the election was partly because of the successful delaying tactics of Trump’s legal team.

“If Donald Trump doesn’t like how late this is happening, he should not have been delaying and postponing for many, many months,” Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat who sat on the House committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, said on CNN’s “The Situation Room.” “Jack Smith is playing the cards he’s been dealt by Donald Trump and by Trump’s supporters on the Roberts Court who have made this go as slow as possible. And I think there’s something quietly heroic about Jack Smith insisting on going forward to make sure that this plot comes to light.”

For all its success in delaying the initial January 6 federal case, the ex-president’s camp was unable to prevent Trump’s conviction in a hush money case related to the 2016 election and a massive fraud judgement against him, his firm and his adult sons in New York. Trump was also found liable for defamation in another case over sexual assault allegations by writer E. Jean Carroll. But a Trump-appointed judge in Florida recently dismissed Smith’s classified documents case against Trump (the special counsel is appealing). And another election meddling case, in Georgia, has been beset by multiple delays. The former president has pleaded not guilty to all charges in all cases.

Immediate political reverberations

The political significance of Smith’s fresh attempt to force Trump to face unaccustomed accountability for his actions adds another dimension to the ex-president’s new face-off with the replacement Democratic nominee, Harris.

The revised indictment will freshen the issue of Trump’s alleged criminality and autocratic ambitions in the minds of voters, after his mountain of legal woes faded as a driving force in the campaign in the furor over Biden’s disastrous debate performance, his subsequent withdrawal from the race and Harris’ storming start to her own campaign. Although there’s no chance the case could come to trial before the election, any attempt by Smith to hold evidentiary hearings in the coming weeks could create a new wave of news coverage about Trump’s alleged criminality as early in-person and absentee voting begins.

Being indicted, yet again, in the middle of a presidential campaign would be a disqualifying badge of shame for most candidates. Yet Trump has used his criminal problems to revive his campaign before – especially during the Republican primary contest. His new indictment came almost exactly a year after he showed up to be booked in an Atlanta jail and submitted to a mug shot that his campaign turned into a defiant emblem.

Trump has struggled in recent weeks to find traction for his campaign against a new Democratic nominee. And the issue of the ex-president’s legal woes had not been a central focus of the election race in recent months. But no sooner had the new Smith charges been filed, the muscle memory of his team returned, as he revived the core narrative of his bid for a second term — a false claim that he’s a victim of election interference by a weaponized Biden Justice Department. The ex-president accused Smith of trying to “resurrect a ‘dead’ Witch Hunt in Washington, D.C., in an act of desperation.” He also claimed the new indictment was a new attempt at election interference to distract from the “catastrophes Kamala Harris has inflicted on our Nation.”

It also did not take long for a new fundraising appeal based on the case to hit email inboxes.

A new challenge for Harris

The return of Trump’s legal quagmire to center stage presents new challenges for Harris. She has focused the early weeks of her White House bid on the pain Americans have faced from high grocery prices to mitigate one political weakness and is seeking to portray herself as a candidate of generational change as compared to Trump.

The vice president hasn’t been quite so overt as Biden in rooting her campaign in a battle for the nation’s soul. But she last week cited Trump’s legal nightmares to portray him as an “unserious man” who would trigger “extremely serious” consequences if he returned to the Oval Office.

Many Harris supporters like the contrast of the vice president, a former prosecutor, and Trump, a convicted felon and indicted suspect — a dynamic certain to play out on the debate stage on September 10.

The latest Trump indictment also bolsters the Harris theme that Americans have a “precious, fleeting opportunity” to move past the bitterness, cynicism and chaos of the Trump years and into a more optimistic future. Still, her campaign must have some concerns that some moderate, swing voters might view yet another indictment of the former president as overkill.

Aside from the immediate political and electoral implications of the new indictment, Smith’s latest filing was a reminder of the surreal reality that a once-and-possibly-future president is being prosecuted for an attempt to ignore the will of voters and stay in power after losing an election.

Biden’s departure from the campaign and the pomp of the conventions have made Trump’s threat to democracy somewhat of an afterthought in recent weeks but the question of how a president who tried to overthrow American democracy avoided accountability and was able to run again for the White House — and potentially win it — is certain to preoccupy future historians.

Members of Congress who are descendants of slave owners are at least $4m richer than those who aren’t – Research

0

Anew study has uncovered a stark correlation between the wealth of members of Congress who are descendants of slave owners and those who are not, raising new questions about privilege and the nature of generational wealth in America.

Published in PLOS ONE, the study reveals that members of Congress whose ancestors enslaved 16 or more people are, on average, at least $4 million wealthier than their peers without such lineage. This conclusion was reached after analyzing all 535 members of the 117th Congress, with factors like age, race, and education having no impact on the findings.

At a time when racial equity, reparations, and the legacy of slavery are hotly debated, this research underscores that, even over 150 years after emancipation, the economic advantages gained through slavery continue to echo in American society.

The question, “How much does America’s slave-owning past influence today’s social and economic landscape?” has long puzzled historians and economists. Researchers Neil K. R. Sehgal and Ashwini R. Sehgal sought to provide an answer. Unlike previous studies that examined the effects of slavery at the county or state level, this study uniquely focuses on the wealth of individual descendants of slaveholders.

The researchers relied on a unique dataset, including a detailed genealogical investigation by Reuters to identify legislators with slaveholding ancestors and the number of people those ancestors enslaved. This was combined with the financial disclosures required of all members of Congress.

The study’s findings reveal a stark picture of wealth disparity: the median net worth of all 535 Congress members was $1.28 million. However, those whose ancestors enslaved 16 or more people had a median net worth of $5.62 million, more than five times the overall average.

Contrary to claims that slavery’s economic impact ended with emancipation, the study argues that the benefits of slave labor have been passed down to the current generation of America’s highest legislative body.

The study does not assign personal responsibility to these legislators for their ancestors’ actions but rather highlights how wealth and privilege can be transmitted across generations through systemic means. Inheritance laws, access to elite educational institutions, entry into prestigious occupations, and the ability to influence political and economic systems are cited as key mechanisms of this transmission.

The research also points out that the wealth gap predominantly favors White legislators. Among White members of Congress, those with ancestors who enslaved 16 or more people had a net worth $3.41 million higher than those without slaveholding ancestry.

“Members of Congress hold significant power to shape policies and set national agendas. Understanding the wealth disparities within this influential group can drive conversations about economic equity and motivate legislators to support policies addressing historical injustices,” the researchers concluded.

West Africa’s ‘Coup Belt’: Did Mali’s 2020 army takeover change the region?

0

Four years ago this month, a group of Malian soldiers descended on a military base in Kati, close to the capital Bamako, arrested their most senior leaders, and seized weapons from the armoury.

Shortly after, they stormed Bamako in trucks, where they detained then-President Aboubakar Keita, as Malians jubilated in the streets. The August 18, 2020, coup d’etat came after weeks of protests against Keita who faced calls to resign, amid accusations that his government was corrupt and failed to clamp down on an armed rebellion in the country’s north waged by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS). The new military government promised to tackle the fighters swiftly.

That August marked an end to eight years of political stability in Mali, where between 2012 and 2020 there were no military takeovers in an area that was coup-prone. The takeover also stamped the start of a political ripple in the wider West Africa region that has since seen other civilian governments fall.

“We largely saw civilian rule strengthening in Africa up until that moment, and I think that the Mali coup was a critical juncture in the weakening of that norm,” said Dan Eizenga of the United States-based Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS). The slew of coups is reminiscent of the 1980s-1990s when African countries newly liberated from colonial rule faced a barrage of rebellions.

“I don’t think you’ll find another four years that has seen so many coups and counter-coups since [that time],” Eizenga told Al Jazeera.

Here’s how the Malian coup unfolded, and a timeline of the military takeovers that have since followed:

Coup within a coup

After successfully dethroning Keita, Colonel Assimi Goita, the now 41-year-old special forces soldier who led the coup, was installed as vice president of a transition government, and civilian Bah Ndaw as president. The joint council promised to hold elections in 18 months. However, a power struggle soon erupted between the two sides, as each attempted to wield more influence.

On May 24, 2021, Ndaw reshuffled the cabinet, removing military leaders who had been key to the August coup. Later that day, the military arrested and sent Ndaw to the military base in Kati. Hours later, Goita announced on public television that Ndaw had tried to “sabotage” the transitional government and was thus removed. He declared himself president and extended military rule to June 2022.

Goita has continued to extend the transition. This May he pushed elections to 2027, after holding a “national dialogue” – a referendum boycotted by most political parties.

Coup season

Between August 2020 and August 2024, West and Central Africa experienced at least 10 coup attempts.

Guinea

First was Guinea. On September 24, 2021, octogenarian President Alpha Conde was booted out of government by Captain Mamady Doumbouya, the then 41-year-old head of an elite Special Forces unit created by Conde. The president had caused widespread anger after he forced a constitutional change that would allow him to seek a third term in office and then cracked down brutally on protesters who were against the move. Some Guineans swarmed into the streets in celebration as news of Conde’s fall filtered out. The military is set to hand over to a civilian government by December 2024.

Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso insecurity spilling over from Mali, its neighbour, was intensifying after the coup. Large swaths of Burkinabe territory fell to the armed groups, putting pressure on the civilian government of Roch Marc Christian Kabore. There was growing general dissatisfaction as well with France, a former colonial power, across Francophone West Africa. Although thousands of French troops deployed in Mali and Burkina Faso, insecurity remained high.

On January 24, 2022, Kabore was deposed in a coup led by then 41-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henro Damiba, an officer well-known for his success leading offensives on the front line. However insecurity levels worsened following the takeover, and the country lost 40 percent of its territory to the armed groups by 2023. The Burkinabe army also suffered huge defeats on the battlefront, causing anger in the military.

On September 30, 2022, Damiba’s government was overthrown by a group of soldiers led by then 34-year-old Captain Ibrahim Traore. In May 2024, Traore pushed elections back by five years.

Niger

On July 26, 2023, Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by top army officials led by the chief presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tchiani. Niger shares borders with Mali and Burkina Faso and is also in the throes of an insecurity crisis. However, it is believed Tchiani was about to be relieved of his post, prompting the takeover.

Weeks before, on July 9, the regional Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) bloc had appointed Nigeria’s new President Bola Tinubu as chairman. In his speech, Tinubu promised to stop coups in the region – attempting to project stronger leadership as coup after coup appeared to shrink ECOWAS’s influence.

Tinubu convened an extraordinary meeting of West African leaders immediately after the Niger coup. ECOWAS suspended Niger, shut its borders, cut electricity and demanded that Bazoum be reinstated. All 15 countries except Cape Verde committed troops for a possible “military intervention”.

After the ECOWAS standby force was activated on August 10, hundreds in Nigeria took to the streets in protest, denouncing a possible war amid an economic crisis at home. Communities on the Nigeria-Niger border also called for dialogue. Meanwhile, Mali and Burkina Faso announced they would militarily defend Niger in the case of an ECOWAS invasion, and formed their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Tensions in the region eventually calmed after Tinubu soft-pedalled and ruled out an ECOWAS attack.

Gabon

Hours after early morning announcements that President Ali Bongo Ondimba had, again, won in the Central African country’s elections, the military stormed the national broadcaster on August 30, 2023. The coup, led by Brigadier General Brice Oligui Nguema, effectively ended the Bongo family’s 56-year rule. Nguema, who is also Bongo’s cousin, was installed as president of the transitional government on September 4, despite foreign condemnation of the coup. Elections are scheduled to be held in August 2025.

Failed attempts

There were two failed attempts to oust President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s democratically elected government in Guinea Bissau. The first was in 2022. It is unclear who led the attack that was quelled by the military. The second, in December 2023, was allegedly instigated by Colonel Victor Tchongo who headed the National Guard.

In Sierra Leone, a dramatic shootout in the capital on the morning of November 26, 2023, was later confirmed to be a failed coup. It has been linked to former president Ernest Bai Koroma who is now exiled in Nigeria. His bodyguard and ex-military officer Amadu Koita was handed an 182-year sentence in July.

Military reshuffles

A day after the Gabon coup in August 2023, then-90-year-old President Paul Biya of Cameroon, who has led the country since 1982, promptly reshuffled senior military officers, installing new leaders in charge of defence, air force, navy and police divisions.

Earlier, in June 2023, Rwanda’s government announced President Paul Kagame’s dismissal of two senior commanders in the military, a day after the Minister of Defence Albert Murasira and a slew of other top officials were replaced. Two days later, the Rwandan army also announced that nearly 300 soldiers were either dismissed, sacked or had their contracts revoked. Rwandan Defence and Military spokesperson, Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga told local journalists the affected soldiers showed “gross misconduct” like drunkenness or insubordination and that there was “no fear” of a coup.

Goodbye France, hello Russia

The multiple coups came amid growing general resentment of France in Francophone countries, where many accuse Paris of neocolonial tendencies, pointing to the widespread presence of French businesses, and the continued pegging of the common CFA currency to France’s euros, for example.

Since the takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, the military governments have played up those populist feelings, casting Paris in a poor light, and severing ties. They have pressured foreign forces to leave, leading to the withdrawal of thousands of French and American troops that were once positioned across the region, helping to fight armed groups. The French military completely pulled out of the Sahel between 2022 and 2023. Bamako also demanded that a 15,000-man United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINUSMA) leave last December.

Meanwhile, all three have turned to Russia for strategic support.

Hundreds of fighters from Wagner, a mercenary group now rebranded as Africa Corps, and operating as a part of the Russian government, are on the front lines in Mali and Burkina Faso. There is no evidence of Wagner fighters in Niger yet, but Niamey agreed in January to step up security cooperation with Russia.

However, insecurity levels only appear to have worsened in the countries, with the Sahel now recording surging violence levels. There have been 11,200 recorded deaths, mostly in Burkina Faso (68 percent), and triple the count from 2021, according to ACSS findings.

“Correlation is not causality,” the Africa Center’s Eizenga said, referring to the corresponding spike in deaths and violent events in the three countries trackers have recorded since 2021, the period right after the first Mali coup. “And I am not saying that the armies caused the insurgencies, but I am saying their methods are not helping, they are only making things worse.”

The United States and human rights groups have accused Wagner troops, alongside the Malian and Burkinabe armies, of gross human rights violations and targeting civilians in the strongholds of armed groups. According to research from Eizenga, more people were targeted by government troops than by the armed groups, a condition that pushes more people to join the rebel groups out of anger, he said. Media organisations have also been muzzled, opposition parties silenced and activists jailed. In Burkina Faso, government critics have been forcefully conscripted into the army.

The Russian presence in the region has prompted fears of wider conflict. In Mali, government soldiers are also targeting Tuareg separatists in the north who have long been fighting for an independent Azawad state. In a recent attack that saw several Malian soldiers and Russian troops killed, Ukraine hinted that it helped the rebels with intelligence.

“Certainly, that has always been the game plan or grand strategy of both the West and the East to attack each other’s interest on the continent,” said Festus Kofi Aubyn, a researcher with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in Ghana. “Once Russia has succeeded in driving away the West in the Sahel, we should expect retaliatory attacks on Russian interests as well.”

Is ECOWAS to blame?

The regional ECOWAS bloc has splintered since the AES states announced their withdrawal from the bloc in January. ECOWAS has lifted its suspensions, softened its stance and encouraged the AES states to return to the fold, but without success. Nigeria’s Tinubu, as well as several other older presidents, have even designated Senegal’s new young President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as a mediator with his fellow young “brothers”.

Experts lay much of the blame for how the region has descended into a tangled mess of coups, mercenary fighters and violence hotspots at ECOWAS’s feet. The bloc, under the previous chairmanship of Ghana’s Nana Akufo-Addo, was not firm enough after the first coup in Mali and did not immediately react with punishment strong enough to deter others, some say.

ECOWAS also failed to heavily punish civilian presidents from seeking third terms and allowed the “civilian coups” that triggered military intervention, like in the case of Guinea.

“The lack of coherent and consistent response by ECOWAS emboldened the coup-makers to act with impunity,” WANEP’s Aubyn said.

Prosecutors seek death penalty for 50 people implicated in alleged coup attempt in

0

Prosecutors on Tuesday called for 50 people, including three Americans, to face the death penalty for what the Congolese army says was a coup attempt earlier this year.

Military prosecutor Lieutenant Colonel Innocent Radjabu urged the judges to sentence to death all those on trial, except for one defendant who suffers from “psychological problems.”

The defendants, whose trial opened in June, face a number of charges, many punishable by death, including terrorism, murder and criminal association.

Six people were killed during the botched coup attempt led by the little-known opposition figure Christian Malanga in May that targeted the presidential palace and a close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi. Malanga was fatally shot for resisting arrest soon after live-streaming the attack on his social media, the Congolese army said.

Malanga’s 21-year-old son Marcel Malanga, who is a US citizen, and two other Americans are on trial for their alleged role in the attack. His mother, Brittney Sawyer, has said her son is innocent and simply followed his father, who considered himself president of a shadow government in exile.

Tyler Thompson Jr., 21, flew to Africa from Utah with the younger Malanga for what his family believed was a vacation, with all expenses paid by the elder Malanga. The young men had played high school football together in the Salt Lake City suburbs. Other teammates accused Marcel of offering up to $100,000 to join him on a “security job” in Congo.

Thompson’s family maintains he had no knowledge of the elder Malanga’s intentions, no plans for political activism and didn’t even plan to enter Congo. He and the Malangas were meant to travel only to South Africa and Eswatini, Thompson’s stepmother said.

Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, 36, is the third American on trial. He is reported to have known Christian Malanga through a gold mining company that was set up in Mozambique in 2022, according to an official journal published by Mozambique’s government, and a report by the Africa Intelligence newsletter.

Earlier this year, Congo reinstated the death penalty, lifting a more than two-decade-old moratorium, as authorities struggle to curb violence and militant attacks in the country.

This woman left U.S. to rear goats in Uganda and now making millions

More than 42.4 million immigrants live in the United States to pursue opportunities and dreams. Many of these immigrants believe in the American Dream and are optimistic about achieving it despite the political climate and threats they face almost every day.

Sarah Atuhaire left Uganda for the United States 13 years ago to chase the American dream but recently abandoned it to invest back home. Today, she is a goat farmer making millions.

With her background in food security and poverty eradication, the Ugandan businesswoman told UG Connect that while in the U.S., she set up a company that provided employment opportunities for numerous individuals. But she wanted to do something different and soon realized her passion for goat farming. Inspired to establish the farm in her homeland, she returned to Uganda to start AIRE Farms Kayunga, which is located 170km from the capital, Kampala.

“In the U.S. I owned a company that employed people who earned good money. But I feel like the employment I have created here gives me so much satisfaction and fulfillment. I personally believe in fair wages, so I think I am one of the highest-paying farmers in Uganda,” she noted.

There are over 1,000 goats of different breeds, including Savanna, Kalahari red and South African Boer on her farm. “The good thing about the Boers and the Savanna is that they get on heat just six months after birth, unlike the local breed, which takes two years before they are served for the first time. But we don’t serve them at six months, we wait for them to make at least eight months to make sure pregnancy doesn’t affect them,” Atuhaire explained.

Giving more details about her goat rearing, she said that her pen is divided into three sections; one for bucks, another for does and the other for kids. By separating them, she easily controls reproduction and cuts down on diseases such as pneumonia during cold seasons.

“Separating them also helps us to produce kids in groups which give us bulk cash when we sell them to breeders and also makes management easier.”

Goats have been described as “low maintenance and adaptable animals” that can help farmers in eastern Africa escape poverty while tackling climate change and improving nutrition.

Goats breed all year round in tropical zones, helping families in rural areas acquire a quick source of income.

Atuhaire, who sells her goats for breeding and meat purposes, said she got into goat rearing because it is very profitable.

According to local media, four-month-old goats cost USh 150,000 (around $40). And while a billy goat sells at around $67, a nanny goat goes for $54.

When Africa Ruled the World: A look at 4 powerful empires that changed history

0

Although Africa is often overlooked in historical narratives, the continent’s influence is profound
Centuries before European nations exerted imperial rule across the globe, the Moors—people from powerful North African civilizations—held a stronghold over much of Europe, introducing civilization and culture to a largely undeveloped region.

Although Africa is often overlooked in historical narratives, with the focus typically on European, Asian, or Middle Eastern empires, the continent’s influence on world history is profound and multifaceted. Africa boasts a rich and complex history, marked by the rise of powerful empires that shaped its destiny and left a lasting impact on the world. This was when Africa ruled the world.

Let’s journey through time and uncover the stories of some of these great African empires.

The Moors

During the Middle Ages, the Moors significantly influenced the Iberian Peninsula, which is now modern-day Spain and Portugal. Their rule in the region spanned from the early 8th century to the late 15th century, a period characterized by both conflict and cultural flourishing.

The Moors established the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba, which became one of the most advanced and culturally vibrant centers of the medieval world. This era, often referred to as Al-Andalus, reached its peak in the 10th century under Abd al-Rahman III. He declared himself caliph and established Córdoba as a major center of learning, culture, and political power.

Al-Andalus was renowned for its achievements in science, medicine, philosophy, and architecture. The Great Mosque of Córdoba, the Alhambra Palace in Granada, and other architectural marvels from this period reflect the high level of cultural and artistic development.

However, the unity of the Moors and Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula began to fragment over time. The Reconquista, a series of military campaigns by Christian kingdoms to reclaim territory, intensified. By the late 15th century, Muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula was confined to the Emirate of Granada, the last remaining Muslim state.

The Moors ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula from 711 to 1492. Their influence is still evident in the rich architectural and cultural legacy they left behind, making their historical impact a notable chapter in European and world history.

Ancient Egypt

Among the earliest and most influential African civilizations was Ancient Egypt, whose history spans from around 3100 B.C. to 30 B.C. Egypt’s contributions to global culture, science, and architecture are legendary. The construction of the pyramids, the development of writing systems like hieroglyphics, and advances in medicine and mathematics are a testament to its sophisticated society.

Egyptian influence extended beyond Africa. Its trade networks reached into the Near East and Mediterranean, and its cultural and technological innovations significantly impacted neighboring regions. The civilization’s art, religion, and governance left an enduring legacy that continues to be studied and admired.

The Kingdom of Kush

South of Egypt, in what is now Sudan, lay the Kingdom of Kush, which rose to prominence during the early first millennium B.C. The Kushites not only traded with Egypt but also conquered it. During the 25th Dynasty, known as the “Kushite Dynasty,” rulers like Piye and Taharqa governed Egypt, blending African and Egyptian cultures.

The Kingdom of Kush’s influence was marked by its military prowess and its rich contributions to art and architecture. Kush’s impact on the region was significant, shaping the cultural and political landscape of Northeast Africa.

The Mali Empire

The Mali Empire flourished from the 13th to the 16th centuries and stands as another monumental African civilization. Under the rule of Mansa Musa, the empire became one of the wealthiest and most influential in the world. Mansa Musa’s legendary pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 showcased the empire’s immense wealth and facilitated extensive trade networks connecting West Africa with the Middle East and Europe.

Mali’s influence extended through its control over key trade routes and its rich cultural and intellectual life. The city of Timbuktu, in particular, was a center of learning and culture, housing one of the largest collections of manuscripts in the medieval world and attracting scholars and traders from across the globe.

Broader Impact and Global Interactions

The decline of many African empires coincided with the onset of European colonialism. The Scramble for Africa, which occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, resulted in the loss of sovereignty for many African states.

However, Africa’s contributions are crucial to understanding the development of human societies. The continent’s influence was felt through trade, cultural exchange, and the spread of innovations across continents.

While no single African empire dominated the globe, the achievements of these civilizations were profound, shaping the course of global history and leaving an enduring legacy that continues to be celebrated and studied today.

6 Black female celebrities who have had to pay the most for their divorce

0

Tina Knowles has been in the news for the huge amount of money she has to pay to her ex-husband in their divorce settlement. She married 77-year-old Richard Lawson in April 2015, according to The US Sun, and on July 26, 2023, she filed for divorce.

But, according to a court filing, the 70-year-old recently consented to give Lawson a one-time lump sum of $300,000, as reported by In Touch. The ex-couples also decided that neither would get spousal support.

Knowles also received a 2020 Bentley, a 2018 Tesla, a 1 percent share in Kirby Beauty Management LLC, the Matriarch Book agreement with Penguin Random House, and the furnishings and artwork that she currently owns.

The video player is currently playing an ad.

She additionally received all of the artistic works, ideas, and other stuff she generated during their union. Knowles was also allocated separate property, which included her Los Angeles home and an estate in Texas.

The announcement has shocked many, with one social media user saying, “Being a man and asking for money in a divorce is so embarrassing, especially when you’re an entertainer.”

Generally, it is expected that when a couple divorces, the husband will be ordered by the court to pay monthly spousal support based on his income and assets. But women also pay for spousal support.

Women’s alimony payments are expected to rise as societal standards change. This can occur when a woman earns much more than her ex-husband, or when there is an enormous gap in their earning potential as a result of career advancement or schooling. A woman’s contributions to the marriage, such as staying at home to raise children or supporting her husband’s profession, may also be considered when establishing alimony.

Besides Beyonce’s mom, other famous Black women who are believed to be earning more than their partners have had to pay alimony or child support when their marriages ended.

Here are some other Black female celebrities who had to pay the most after divorce:

Janet Jackson ($15 Million)

Janet Jackson’s highly secret marriage ended after nine years when her husband Rene Elizondo filed for divorce. Elizondo allegedly sued Jackson for $25 million in spousal support. She finally consented to give her ex-husband $15 million after a two-year court struggle, according to Wallin & Klarich Family Law.

Candace Parker ($400,000)

Shelden Williams, a former NBA player, filed for divorce from WNBA legend Candace Parker after eight years of matrimony. Parker decided to give Williams a flat sum of $400,000 during their divorce, according to the Bleacher Report, to avoid having to pay Williams child support every month. The couple agreed on joint custody of their kid.

Mel B. ($40,000)

Melanie Brown’s marriage to Stephen Belafonte lasted ten years. The two had a daughter together. On the heels of allegations of domestic abuse, the Spice Girls member filed for divorce in 2020. Brown stated that she thought Belafonte would kill her. In the end, a judge ruled that Brown had to pay $140,000 in legal fees and $40,000 in alimony to Belafonte each month, according to Essence.

Mary J. Blige ($30,000)

When it came to the financial burden that her divorce from ex-husband Martin “Kendu” Isaacs caused her, rap star Mary J. Blige was quite transparent and truthful. She was ordered by a judge to pay $30,000 a month in alimony, a significant amount less than the $130,000 Isaacs had sought in addition to child support for his children from another relationship. Blige publicly stated that after he lied, cheated on her, and wasted so much of her money, she believed giving him alimony was “wack.”

According to Lisa McKnight, Blige ran into financial difficulties and was compelled to go on tour to pay her expenses due to the high cost of the settlement.

Halle Berry ($8000)

Halle Berry’s two-year marriage to Olivier Martinez came to an end in 2016. However, it took until August 2023 for the two to come to a financial understanding. People reported that although Berry and Martinez will have joint custody of their 9-year-old son Maceo, Berry will be paying Martinez $8,000 in child support. Martinez will additionally receive 4.3% of Berry’s profits over $2 million.

Liberian ex-chief justice acquitted of niece’s murder

0

Liberia’s former justice minister and chief justice Gloria Maya Musu-Scott has been acquitted of the murder of her niece by the country’s Supreme Court.

The 70-year-old and three female relatives had been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal killing in February 2023 of 29-year-old Charlotte Musu.

The case gripped the nation as Ms Musu-Scott had been one of Liberia’s most famous judges and politicians, a champion of women rights and at the time of her conviction had just won a significant case against the electoral commission as part of the then-opposition party’s legal team.

A jubilant crowd greeted them outside the jail as they were freed after serving more than eight months.

Shortly afterwards, Ms Musu-Scott said she and her family rejoiced in their release but she lamented the state of the justice system.

“There are a lot of innocent persons in jail in this republic. So I say thank you to the lawyers. But I say to them, there is still work to be done.”

Ms Musu-Scot served as Liberia’s justice minister and later as the chief justice of the Supreme Court until her retirement in 2003.

She later transitioned to politics and was a lawmaker in Maryland County until 2012.

She was still a member of the Unity Party – whose leader Joseph Boakai became president in January – and had been part of the legal team that successfully challenged the electoral commission’s refusal to allow parties to see the voters’ roll.

Ms Musu-Scott and her three relatives were found guilty by a lower court in December of stabbing her niece and also for conspiracy and making a false report to the police.

They were sentenced to life in January.
The former chief justice had denied the charge, saying the 29-year-old had been killed by an “assassin” who had entered her home in the capital, Monrovia.

Delivering the appeal verdict on Wednesday, Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to link the former judge and her relatives to the crime.

“The state did not meet the burden of proof to warrant the conviction of the defendants. Therefore, the defendants are hereby acquitted of the crimes of murder, criminal conspiracy… as charged in the indictment,” Justice Youh ruled.

The top court said the evidence presented by the state prosecutors failed to identify the specific individual responsible for the murder.

State prosecutors had earlier acknowledged that the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence, local media reported.
Women’s rights groups have urged that the Charlotte Musu not be forgotten.

The acquittal had “reopened wounds and ignited a sense of urgency to seek true justice” for the murdered woman, the Women Non-Governmental Organizations Secretariat Of Liberia (Wongosol) said in a statement.

“Justice cannot be sacrificed for the sake of the wrongly accused.”
The group added that the acquitted women would also need help to rebuild their lives.

“While we acknowledge that the criminal justice system is designed to protect the innocent, we cannot ignore the fact that a grave injustice has been done.

“The individuals who were wrongfully accused and detained have endured immense suffering.”

Hichilema’s rising dictatorship- Amb.  Emmanuel Mwamba

0

Hichilema’s rising dictatorship

…if we have been betrayed by the deliberate silence of those that have a duty to denounce these despotic tendencies, who have been guardians and custodians of our country, our God in heaven will surely raise new voices amongst its people….

Amb.Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

As many credible local and international reports chronicles President Hakainde Hichilema record of abuse, as he entrenches his dictatorship and autocratic rule, it is clear that Zambian voices from the Human Rights Commission, NGOOCC, Law Association of Zambia, the Church, NGOs and other key stakeholders have been;

1. Silenced or,
2. Intimidated into fear and self-censorship or,
3. Bought.

Just over one year of President Hichilema being in office, the United States 2022/3 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices in Zambia gave damning findings of Hichilema’s despotic tendencies, summarised and reported that;

●Significant human rights issues included credible reports of: unlawful or arbitrary killings, including extrajudicial killings;
● torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the government; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions;
●serious restrictions on freedom of expression and media, including violence and threats of violence against journalists, censorship, or enforcement of or threat to enforce criminal libel laws to limit expression;
●substantial interference with the rights of freedom of assembly and association;
●serious government corruption;
In 2024, all these elements have taken hold as Hichilema looks to 2026 to retain power even in the face of pubkic rejection or loss of the election.

This has since been collaborated by fresh and recent reports from Human Rights Watch International and other serious groupings.

It has been noted that since 2021, Zambia’s quick decline into dictatorship, abuse of human rights, erosion of independence and autonomy of democratic institutions including the Judiciary, unwarranted and vicious attacks on political oponents and large-scale acts of corruption and grand looting of the Treasury as its democracy ranking falls rapidly, was taking hold.

One would wonder, how a President who won national elections in 2021, on the basis that he will restore the Rule of Law, end corruption, promote democratic values and let political and civic freedoms flourish, would be the biggest turncoat, and be quickly drunk with power and rapidly descend into the abyss of running a despotic government!

The new report by the United Nation Experts on Human Rights led by Gina Romero, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, is demonstrable of the rapid decline of human rights and despotic tendencies that have characterised President Hichilema’s rule since 2021.

The UN Report stated;

●“We are deeply troubled by allegations that State actors have instrumentalised arcane provisions in the law, including “seditious intention”, to suppress the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression which is also enshrined in international treaties that Zambia has ratified.

●This is compounded by shortcomings in the administration of justice, such as arrests prior to the conduct of thorough and impartial investigations and undue delays in bringing accused persons before the courts.

●While the Government’s actions to counter hate speech, maintain peace and stability, and promote national unity are welcomed, these must be based on national laws that conform to international human rights law and standards,
●”The arrests and restrictions have had a chilling effect on freedom of opinion, expression, association and assembly, which are core components of a robust functioning democracy,
●and risk exacerbating deepening divisions, including along ethnic and regional lines, and further shrinking civic space in the country.”

● To de-escalate tensions, the Government must uphold constitutionally guaranteed rights; create a safe and enabling environment for civic space; expedite legislative reforms, including the Public Order Act, the Penal Code and the State Security Act.

Zambia has always been held in high esteem and has been touted as a shining example of democracy in Africa, enjoying peace and security, and fostering peaceful co-existence and tolerance of its diverse people.

However President Hichilema is determined to destroy this stellar record because of his personal goal to achieve a second term at all cost and probably walk away as one of the wealthiest men in Africa with billions obtained from the abuse of office and looting of public resources and the Treasury.

The recent dubious policy decions and activities in key sectors such as mines, energy sector and the poweer utility, ZESCO and other business interests, point to unprecedented show of greed to accumulate immense wealth at all cost.

In my humble view, Zambians shall not be silenced into fear and watch their nation burn.

If we have been betrayed by the silence of those that have a duty to denounce these despotic tendencies and have been guardians and custodians of our country, our God in heaven will surely raise new voices amongst its people to replace them and save the nation.

Zambia must immediately halt downward spiral of infringements on fundamental freedoms: UN experts

GENEVA (29 August 2024) – Independent experts today expressed concern about multiple allegations of arbitrary arrests and detentions on charges of, inter alia, unlawful assembly, espionage, hate speech and seditious practices against opposition political party leaders and members, parliamentarians, human rights defenders and activists, as well as restrictions on gatherings, meetings, peaceful protests and rallies in Zambia.

Since January 2022, at least 26 such cases have been brought to the attention of the experts. Information received indicates that in some cases, arrests, intimidation and harassment stem merely from expressing diverging, and critical views whilst in others, they are intended to curtail participation in political and public life.

“These practices have resulted in increasing political polarisation and self-censorship,” the experts said. “The arrests and restrictions have had a chilling effect on freedom of opinion, expression, association and assembly, which are core components of a robust functioning democracy and risk exacerbating deepening divisions, including along ethnic and regional lines, and further shrinking civic space in the country.”

The experts noted that, since December 2021, they had also received information about 16 incidents against journalists or media outlets, as well as 11 clashes, attacks, and cases of intimidation and assault, mostly perpetrated by ruling party members against members and supporters of opposition parties. According to information received, the church has not been spared, with reported arrests of clergy and disruption of meetings by law enforcement.

“To deescalate tensions, the Government must uphold constitutionally guaranteed rights; create a safe and enabling environment for civic space; expedite legislative reforms, including the Public Order Act, the Penal Code and the State Security Act; ensure the functioning of the National Mechanism for Implementation and Follow-up; and institute measures to ensure that State actors and institutions, including the Zambia Police Service, protect human dignity and rights.”

“We are deeply troubled by allegations that State actors have instrumentalised arcane provisions in the law, including “seditious intention”, to suppress the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression which is also enshrined in international treaties that Zambia has ratified. This is compounded by shortcomings in the administration of justice, such as arrests prior to the conduct of thorough and impartial investigations and undue delays in bringing accused persons before the courts.

“While the Government’s actions to counter hate speech, maintain peace and stability, and promote national unity are welcomed, these must be based on national laws that conform to international human rights law and standards,” the experts said.

“The Government has a responsibility to disrupt destructive patterns of attack and retribution between ruling and opposition parties, which have characterised politics over the last three decades, including by inviting dialogue with the opposition,” they said.
The experts are in contact with the Government of Zambia on these issues.

Lungu gave Malanji presidential jet for Turkey trips – Mukelabai

Lungu gave Malanji presidential jet for Turkey trips – Mukelabai

FORMER president Edgar Lungu released the presidential jet to his foreign affairs minister, Joe Malanji after sanctioning his errand trips to Morocco and Turkey in 2020 and 2021.

This is according to Kawaleyela Mukelabai,a senior sssistant commissioner under the anti-money laundering unit of Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

Testifying against Malanji in the Economic and Financial Crimes Court yesterday, Mukelabai said he solved the puzzle of the former minster’s trips with the help of letters that came from the Secretary to the Cabinet Dr Simon Miti.

The letters were addressed to ministry of foreign affairs Permanent Secretary, Dr Ronald Simwinga.

In his testimony before principal resident magistrate Irene Wishimanga, Mukelabai explained that according to the letters, Lungu authorized Malanji to travel to Morocco and Turkey as a special envoy of the President.

“At the time I was interviewing Dr. Simwinga, he was able to provide the copies of the letters which had come from the secretary to the cabinet, Simon Miti then which letters had given authoritlsation by the President then Mr. Lungu authoring Mr. Malanji to go to Turkey and Morocco as a special envoy of the President,” Mukelabai said.

“I could not find the originals. I however, managed to go to state house where I was given a file copy because that is where they were generated from.”

He said the reasons for arresting Fredson Yamba who is the former secretary to the treasury and Malanji was that, he noticed that the procurement and renovation of chanceries in 28 Zambian missions abroad using borrowed funds, was orchestrated by State House.

“This whole case started from the letter generated from State House by Hibeene Mwiinga, special assistant to the president then, the next I saw in my investigation the effort of acquiring a loan from Turkey to purchase a chancery and staff houses,” Mukelabai narrated.

He said the ministry of finance had indicated that, the loan would be costly to government and guided that the procurement of properties, could be budgeted for under staggered payments.

“To me, it was an indication that government had no money to service that loan and that’s why it could only afford budgeting for the properties using staggered budget,” Mukelabai said.

“I noticed, the secretary to the treasury Mr Yamba after receiving pressure from Mr. Malanji, organised K108 million, which was quoted as personal emoluments for oversees allowances for employees.”

Mukelabai said the money was sent to the ministry of foreign affairs but the controlling officer Dr Simwinga rejected the illegal instruction, by reversing the funding back to MoF and and the money was later sent to Turkey by Yamba.

“Mr. Malanji had written a letter to stannic bank on October 15, 2020; that he would be depositing dollars in the Stanbic account in future,” he said.

“Clearly the case theory shows that it was a predetermined arrangement. The issues to procure the properties in turkey were not in picture at that time, the money was being organized from the Treasury.”

He said Malanji had personally travelled to Turkey and diverted the money which he came back with to Zambia and begun depositing dollars in his company account for Gibson Power Systems for 14 days, and later used the money to buy two helicopters.

“That is the theory of the case and evidence showing the activities. A similar incidence is demonstrated from the aftermath of the Morocco trip, he leaves on October 22, 2020 and comes back on October 25, 2020, and the following day he begins to deposit K2 million everyday, for the next five days.” He said.

“There was no trace of the money having been generated from the businesses apart from the activities in Turkey and Morocco as per my investigation.”

Mukelabai said the Public Procurement Act no. 12 of 2008 is clear regarding international procurement, as Authority is supposed to be sought from the Zambia Public Procurement Authority (ZPPA), but the same was not done.

Mukelabai narrated that, The Public Finance Management Act no 1 of 2018, stipulates that the secretary to the treasury is the chief controlling officer, who has power to appoint controling officers to spearhead the heads for expenses in ministries as appropriated by Parliament.

“Section 22 of the Public Finance Management Act is clear, as it states that release of the funds from control 99 ( Treasury single account) can only be done by the secretary to the treasury, by following what the constitution and the Act provides,” he said.

“It was clear in the audit that activities surrounding the US$7,132, 000 and how it was utilized, everything was irregularly done.”

Mukelabai said the information on the invoice for the purchase of a chancery is incorrect is because; “according to interactions I had with the owner of the building, he said he sold it at US$1,150, 000 and the actual amount that went to his bank account from Burhan Asaf Shafak was $1,127, 308. The owner said, out of that money US$22, 691.66 was paid for taxes.”

He said reason he indicated that the invoice had been prepared to justify a position which was not in tandem with the findings of the investigation, was that  9,700,000TL was the cost of the three floors for the chancery.

Mukelabai said he made up his mind to charge the duo for the subject offenses.

“I am convinced that the evidence I have gathered for the charges is sufficient to be placed on your record to help me prove my case,”said Mukelabai who is still on stand.

Yamba and his co-accused Malanji are accused of failing to adhere to guidelines relating to the management of public resources and possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Yamba is alleged to have abrogated the law relating to the management of public property when he approved the transfer of K154,201,197 for the purchase of a chancery in Turkey.

Malanji is accused of possessing two helicopters BELL430 and a BELL 206 Jet Ranger helicopter suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Trial continues today.

With Salaula and Cheap Imports from China, will Mulungushi Textiles Survive

With Salaula and Cheap Imports from China, will Mulungushi Textiles Survive

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

Mulungushi Textile has been a Cinderella project by every new government apparently to woo quick political support from the people of Kabwe than its viability.

The Patriotic Front Government budgetted for $15million to revive the plant in Kabwe.

Can Mulungushi Textiles Work?

Zambia had a thriving textiles, clothing, and garments sector.

The textiles and clothing industry grew considerably between 1964 and the 1980s, during the period of implementing the policy of Import Substitution Industrialisation (ISI).

By the 1980s, Zambia had developed a full value chain of the textile industry from cotton farming and production, to ginning, spinning, knitting and weaving, to garment production and to finished products.

The country had Kafue Textiles, and Mulungushi Textiles that were state-owned enterprise with clothing industry such as Serioes International. Serioes International Company Limited was a Luanshya based company that produced suits for the local and international markets.

There was also a thriving private sector in the sector. For example, Livingstone alone had Partex Industries, Robin Garments Limited, Sparrow Garments Limited, Sportex Knitting Mills, Zambia Fashions Limited and J.R.Textiles. From the Copperbelt we had Mukuba Textile, Swap Spinning and Kariba Textiles.

During this period, the country hosted more than 130 textiles and garment manufacturing companies.

However, during the implementation of the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) in the 1990s, the economy was liberalized, birders opened and the protectionist policy on Import Substitution was abandoned and immediately subjecting the economy to increased and unfair competition from countries with more developed production sectors, more efficiencies,  producing their goods at higher economies of scale such as China, India, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Then came the surge in cheap imports and the increasing and dominant phenomenon of second-hand clothing.

Further, second-hand clothing, usually durable and high quality, but considered as aid and welfare for the poor, was imported duty free at the time and was extremely cheaper than any locally manufactured goods, fast aiding the collapse of the tectile industry.

An NGO, Development Aid from People to People in Zambia (DAPP Zambia), a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1986 was allowed to set up stores enabling cheap and duty free imports of second-hand clothes.

It dudnt take long, the local textile, clothing snd apparel industry collapsed.

Therefore, without a robust and far-sighted policy on the textile and garment industry determining on issues such as Salaula and cheap imports, this project at Mulungushi Textile will fall into its well-known perenial failure.

REASONS WHY YOU MAY CONSIDER MARRYING A SINGLE MOTHER- Hon. Given Katuta

By Hon. Given Katuta

REASONS WHY YOU MAY CONSIDER MARRYING A SINGLE MOTHER.

Most folks, especially African men, do feel they are doing women favour when they marry them as single mothers, but it’s a paradox and a social myth that must be educated.

In my research as a counselor, I have discovered that 90% of single mothers are BEST wives in the marriage market when we go to buy.

Firstly, why do women become single mothers?
Some are DELIBERATE, some are TRAGEDIES (widows) while some are MISTAKES. So if you happen to like a single mother, investigate her motive before you configure the drivers of your feelings.

If it was a MISTAKE or TRAGEDY, trust me she can be the best WIFE you can ever think of.

1. Single mothers that made mistakes do bring total SUBMISSION to the table of marriage once they know that the man is honest and sincere, because they will see marriage as a classroom where they must correct the mistakes they made in the past.

2. If you want to WIN her, love her child first, and you will see that she will LOVE you with her last breath and blood.

3. Don’t forget that as a woman that has put to BED before, there’s 85% assurance that she will conceive without toiling from one prayer house to the other to conceive; the baby is evidence of her fruitfulness.

4. Single Mums treat their husbands as LORDS for the sacrifices they make, and easily forgive them no matter the gravity of what they err.

5. If you marry her, do not discriminate the child in your children’s budget, see them as equals so you don’t sprout the seed of jealousy.

6. If she is a single mum as a widow you may not have problem but if the child’s father is alive, both of you should have an agreement from the beginning on welfare and information management. Don’t deny the father access to his child but put a password before he can have access to your wife; it implies the gateway should be defined while you monitor the parameters; trust me, the child will grow up to love you as the man that made his/her mother happy more than the biological father.

7. Ensure the child is in the same school with your kids, if not that child’s educational setbacks will influence your kids negatively when they play together. If the father supports good, but if he does not be ready to train the child alongside your kids for uniformity of knowledge.

8. If the child is a female child/children, you will have less parenting to do because female children easily relieve parents once the are adult or even get married.

9. 90% of SINGLE MOTHERS are faithful in marriage and wouldn’t pull infidelity string to damage the engine of TRUST in the marriage system; they feel you have sacrificed enough to win their trust and faithfulness.

10. Single Mums are SUPERWOMEN. For a woman to play the role of both parents and bear the responsibility of raising a child/children, don’t joke with such a woman, because even if you die in future she can take care of your family.

11. Single Mums are SEX SATISFIERS. They will lock you down in bed for good sex so you don’t look outside to avoid stories that will touch the heart.

12. Most Single Mothers are good cooks and God fearing; the fact that she did not abort the child justifies her SACREDNESS AND GOD’S FEAR.

Go Brother! It will go well. Buy her a ring and pop the big question “Will You Marry Me?”… I see tears of Joy in her eyes as she says..”Yes I will”. You won’t regret the step you have taken brother.

May God see you through as I join my faith with yours in prayer.

SHOUT OUT TO ALL SINGLE MUMS WORLDWIDE!

Thai court sentences Spanish YouTube chef to life in jail for murder

A court in Thailand has sentenced a Spanish chef to life in prison for murdering and dismembering a Colombian man on the tourist island of Koh Phangan.

On Thursday, the Koh Samui Provincial Court said in a statement that Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a 30-year-old chef with a YouTube channel, was found guilty of murdering Colombian plastic surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, cutting up and concealing his body.

The murder took place in August 2023 while Sancho and Arrieta were holidaying on Koh Phangan, the pair having agreed to meet online. The trial heard that Sancho chopped up 44-year-old Arrieta’s body and put the parts in plastic bags before distributing them around the island.

Sancho, who is from a famous Spanish acting family, denied premeditated murder, but acknowledged dismembering the victim’s body and disposing of the parts on land and at sea.

The defence argued that Sancho acted in legitimate self-defence after Arrieta tried to force him to have sex, the latter falling and hitting his head on a bathtub, losing consciousness and then dying.

The case came to light when rubbish collectors found what the Bangkok Post newspaper described as a sawn-off pelvis and intestines weighing about 5kg (11 pounds) in a fertiliser sack.

Shortly after that, Sancho reported to police that Arrieta was missing. Thai police then gathered evidence linking the two men, detaining and interrogating the chef.

Police obtained surveillance video showing Sancho allegedly purchasing a knife, rubber gloves, rubbish bags and cleaning solutions at a convenience store before Arrieta’s death, which prosecutors claimed bolstered the charge of premeditated murder.

Famous family
The case has generated enormous interest in Spain because the defendant’s father, Rodolfo Sancho, is a renowned actor and dozens of Spanish reporters had flown in for the trial.

The court initially sentenced Sancho to death but commuted the punishment to life imprisonment due to the account he gave of the events during cross-examination, ordering him to pay 4.4 million baht (about $130,000) to Arrieta’s family.

Bussakorn Kaewleeled, a lawyer for the victim’s family, said they were “satisfied with the sentence because he will be put in prison for life and they receive some financial compensation”.

Carmen Balfagon, a lawyer representing the Sancho family, said: “We didn’t expect it [the life sentence], but we must accept what Thai justice has said, we have to respect it.”

In his closing statement, Sancho told the court he regretted his actions. “I am sorry that a life has been lost and that parents have lost a son,” Sancho was quoted as saying by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Under certain conditions, Sancho can apply to be repatriated to serve the remainder of his prison term back home after several years of imprisonment in Thailand, according to a treaty between Thailand and Spain.

EU’s top diplomat seeks sanctions against Israeli ministers

0

The European Union’s foreign policy chief has urged the bloc’s 27 member states to impose sanctions against some Israeli ministers for their “hate messages” against Palestinians.

Josep Borrell, speaking before the EU’s foreign and defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Thursday, said Israeli ministers had made statements that go “clearly against international law and is an incitation to commit war crimes”.

He did not name the ministers. However, in recent weeks Borrell has publicly criticised far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for statements he described as “sinister”.

“I initiated the procedures in order to ask the member states … if they consider appropriate, including in our list of sanctions some Israeli ministers [who have] been launching unacceptable hate messages against the Palestinians,” Borrell told reporters.

“I think that the European Union has not to have taboos in order to use our toolbox – in order to make humane law respected,” he said.

The Israeli ministers have created international outrage after Smotrich suggested starving Gaza’s population to release the Israeli captives held in the enclave.

Ben-Gvir has made several inflammatory comments about Palestinians. He most recently said he would build a Jewish synagogue at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – Islam’s third-holiest site and a symbol of Palestinian identity – in occupied East Jerusalem, if he could.

Diplomats said it is unlikely that Borrell’s call for sanctions on the ministers will gain the required unanimous agreement of all 27 members to pass.

They said, however, that it indicates the level of anger that some European officials have about comments by Israeli ministers.

The EU has been divided since the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on October 7 that triggered Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians.

Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic staunchly defend Israel’s right to self-defence, blocking any attempt at tough measures targeting the Israeli government.

Ireland – among one of the EU’s most pro-Palestinian members and who joined Spain and Norway in recognising Palestinian statehood in May – said on Thursday that it backed Borrell’s proposal for sanctions against ministers and Israeli groups that are “facilitating” the expansion of settlements on Palestinian territory.

“It cannot be business as usual,” Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin told reporters, citing an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice last month, which called on organisations such as the EU to examine its relationship with Israel in light of the occupation of the West Bank.

Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter said this week she would fully back sanctions on Ben-Gvir and Smotrich.

Other ministers have been less than supportive.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told reporters on Thursday that Borrell’s proposal was “dangerous”.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said sanctions would not be the “right path” to keep Israel at the negotiating table for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock signalled reluctance over the proposal and said that EU sanctions were already in place on violent Jewish settlers.

European sanctions involve a ban on travelling to the bloc, and the seizure of assets held within the EU.

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said his country was working “tirelessly” with its European allies to prevent “anti-Israel decisions” at the foreign ministers’ meeting.

“Our message is clear: In a reality where Israel faces threats from Iran and its proxy terror organisations, the free world must stand with Israel, not against it,” he wrote on X.

“If there’s a by-election in Petauke, I won’t contest, I have already given it my all” – Dora Siliya

I can’t re-contest the Petauke seat, I did my part – Dora Siliya

FORMER Petauke Central Member of Parliament Dora Siliya has set the record straight for naysayers and doubting Thomases that she won’t ever be on the Petauke ballot if it ever holds by-elections.

Siliya stated that Petauke Central was still a part of her heart but couldn’t find time to re-contest as MP as she had already given her all to the Constituency.

She was responding to reports in the media suggesting that she had been eyeing the position since the incumbent MP Emmanuel Banda slipped through the fingers of five police men early this month.

The fugitive who was remanded at Namuseche Correctional Facility in Chipata on a charge of aggravated robbery was taken ill at Chipata Central Hospital on August 1.

Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu confirmed that Banda who was being guarded by two police officers and three Zambia Correctional Service officers escaped through a window on the second floor of the facility.

Since the ordeal, social media has been set ablaze with queries on whether Siliya would consider taking the Petauke seat if it was declared vacant.

But on today’s Hot Breakfast Show, the former minister of Information and Broadcasting Services reiterated that she had no intentions of re-contesting the seat.

She however, noted that Petauke Central remains a part of her heart which she can never abandon.

“Petauke is my child, I was the first female MP, I did end up being the youngest MP at the time, I was elected four times, I have Petauke at heart. I did everything for Petauke, I paid school fees for a lot of children. I remember really thinking that we need to have a mortuary, we worked very well I gave it everything.”

“If there’s a by-election in Petauke, I’m not aware that there’s a by-election but I would say Petauke deserves their fair share of the national cake. I will always support Petauke, supporting schools, [and] supporting women. I think my name being on the ballot will not happen, I’m currently occupied with a number of things,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the former MP urged young people to use social media correctly instead of depending on spreading misinformation.

“I love media technology, it has potential for transformation, let us be productive, but bear in mind that social media is also a danger, I wonder where people find the time to spread hate on social media. Social media is like pa Nsaka, anybody can say anything,” she said.

M’MEMBE PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO SEDITIOUS PRACTICES

Lusaka— Thursday, 29th August 2024

Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe has pleaded not guilty to a charge of seditious practices.

It is alleged that on July 16, 2024, between 13:00 hours and 14:00 hours, Dr. M’membe published an article on his Twitter and Facebook pages titled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the USD 20 Million Payout to Buy Zambia’s Silence.”

When the matter came up for plea today, Dr. M’membe pleaded not guilty.

Speaking to journalists after the plea, Dr. M’membe painted a grim picture of the nation’s current state, highlighting several critical issues he believes are contributing to what he termed a “nation in crisis.”

Dr. M’membe pointed out the unprecedented load shedding that has plagued the country. “For the first time in our history, since electricity came to this territory, we are having load shedding of 22 hours or so. This is not a small thing,” he stated.

He emphasized that such extensive power outages are severely affecting the daily lives of citizens. “Modern human beings cannot do without electricity. When you are going without electricity for 20 hours, 22 hours, it’s not a small thing.”

The Socialist Party President also addressed the soaring cost of living, which he described as crippling for many families. “The cost of living is skyrocketing. Most families are struggling to feed today. Many people are failing to meet their rentals,” he said.

Dr. M’membe highlighted the desperation of some citizens who are forced to move out of their homes under the cover of night to avoid eviction.

His remarks come against the backdrop of Zambia’s economy, which has seen significant strain in recent months. He said many citizens have found themselves unable to afford basic necessities, and the prolonged power cuts have only exacerbated the situation.

The frequency and duration of load shedding have raised concerns about the country’s energy infrastructure and the government’s ability to manage it effectively. Dr. M’membe argues that the current administration has failed to address these issues adequately, leading to widespread discontent.

Dr. M’membe also touched on the broader implications of the economic downturn, suggesting that the social fabric of the nation is being tested. “The cost of living is skyrocketing,” he repeated, indicating that the economic crisis is far from over.

UNZA LECTURER OBRIEN KAABA MAINTAINS THAT DISMISSED ACC DIRECTOR GENERAL, TO SHAMAKAMBA IS CORRUPT

By Correspondent
UNZA lecturer, Dr. O’BRIEN Kaaba says dismissed Anti Corruption Commission ((ACC) Director General, Tom Shamakamba has multiple cases at LAZ including the matter he is accused of forging a Will..

In his submission, Dr. Kaaba has told the Lusaka High Court that, Shamakamba’s legal practice has not been premised on integrity and his professional life as a lawyer  has significant blemishes.

He says Shamakamba’s  time at the Commission was characterized by incompetence, lack of confidentiality and failure to effectively prosecute cases of corruption which led to the entire Board formally complaining to President Hakainde Hichilema about his conduct.

Dr. Kaaba said this in his defense that Shamakamba has been subject of several disciplinary actions by the Law Association of Zambia and in no case was he cleared.

Further, the  Law Association of Zambia could not support his  appointment as Director General of the  Anti-Corruption Commission because it never cleared him  in all disciplinary matters brought before it.

He says Shamakamba inappropriately used his power as Director General of the ACC to give immunity to four(4) of the accused people involved in the Ministry of Finance scandal which was being investigated by the ACC, thereby shielding them from prosecution and justice and as a result, some of the said accused persons, despite being allegedly involved in serious acts of corruption, have retained their senior positions in government.

Dr. Kaaba told the court that, as Director General of the ACC Shamakamba has been involved in serious acts calculated to undermine the fight against corruption.

” In one instance, involving a case of corruption involving a pharmaceutical company, which case was jointly being investigated by the police and the ACC and the passports of suspects confiscated, Shamakamba as Director General of the ACC called for the file and without justifiable reason, released the passports of the suspects, thereby aiding and abetting their escape from the jurisdiction and to date the suspects are still at large; and further, in unclear and unjustified circumstances, the Plaintiff personally wrote to the Ministry of Justice to the effect that the investigation had closed and therefore, the 6 million United States dollars which was frozen in the said mater should to released,” Dr. Kaaba submitted.
