EU has approved $109 billion package of counter-tariffs on American goods

The European Union has approved a €93 billion ($109 billion) package of counter-tariffs on American goods, set to take effect from August 7 if trade negotiations with the United States collapse, according to European diplomats. This move comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose a 30% tariff on EU goods unless a trade deal is reached by August 1.

While Brussels and Washington are reportedly moving closer to an agreement that would see a baseline 15% tariff on European goods, the EU is proceeding with detailed plans for retaliation should talks fail. The approved package includes previously agreed tariffs on €21 billion worth of US products, such as soybeans, as well as a new list of €72 billion proposed by the European Commission this month. This second list targets a range of American goods, including airplanes, cars, and whisky.

Supported by 26 EU member states, excluding Hungary, the counter-tariffs could reach up to 30% on the targeted goods, diplomats said. The European Commission, representing the 27-nation bloc in the negotiations, has maintained a patient approach, allowing time for talks before threatening reprisals.

Diplomats suggest that the US proposal under EU review may include exemptions for sectors like aircraft, lumber, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products. However, key EU capitals such as Paris and Berlin have urged Brussels to adopt a firmer stance if necessary.

In addition to the goods tariffs, the Commission is also preparing a separate list of restrictions targeting US services firms, including those in technology and finance, should negotiations with Washington break down.

German satirist acquitted over Trump assassination joke deemed satire by court

A Berlin court on Wednesday acquitted German satirist Sebastian Hotz, known online as “El Hotzo,” of charges stemming from controversial social media posts that prosecutors claimed celebrated an assassination attempt on Donald Trump during the 2024 U.S. election campaign.

The case revolved around a post Hotz made on X (formerly Twitter) in July 2024, shortly after a gunman opened fire at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was grazed by a bullet, and one of his supporters was killed. In a since-deleted post, Hotz wrote, “unfortunately just missed,” comparing Trump to “the last bus.” He followed it with another message: “I find it absolutely fantastic when fascists die.”

Trump survived the attack and went on to win the U.S. presidency in November.

German prosecutors charged Hotz with “approval of offenses” and disturbing the public peace, citing the reach of his post to nearly 740,000 followers. During a one-day trial at the Tiergarten district court, they requested a €6,000 (about $7,030) fine, labeling the comments hate speech with the potential to incite violence.

However, Hotz defended his statements as satire. “Playing with provocation” is part of his work, he told the court, adding that his remarks should be interpreted in a humorous context.

Presiding judge Andrea Wilms agreed, ruling that while the posts may have been in poor taste, they were clearly satirical and did not incite violence. “Such clearly satirical utterances” would not inspire real-world harm, she said, according to a court-issued statement.

Earlier in the week, the German Journalists’ Association condemned the prosecution as excessive and called for the case to be dismissed. They stressed the importance of protecting satirical speech, especially in political commentary, AP reported. Meanwhile, public broadcaster RBB had already cut ties with Hotz due to the controversy.

Travis Scott has just surpassed Eminem to become the second most-streamed rapper of all time on Spotify

Drake still holds the top spot, but it seems like “JACKBOYS 2” gave Travis Scott the edge over Eminem for the silver medal on the platform.

Travis Scott may have some issues when it comes to competition with older MCs, but when it comes to comparisons between him and Eminem, there’s one area that La Flame can finally claim as his own. The Houston superstar recently surpassed the Detroit legend as the rapper with the second most streams of all time on Spotify.

As we caught on Twitter, Scott now has over 58 billion streams across all credits on the digital streaming platform, which is staggeringly impressive. For those curious, the rapper with the most Spotify streams of all time is, to no one’s surprise, Drake. He became the first artist, not just rapper, to surpass 110 billion streams on the digital streaming platform this past March.

Of course, there is one big factor that could’ve pushed Travis Scott over the edge above Eminem here, although it’s likely that he was going to catch up to Slim Shady at some point. We’re talking about the new JACKBOYS compilation from Cactus Jack Records, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 232K units sold despite a shortened tracking week.

JACKBOYS 2 did not have the best reception of any Travis Scott album, but fans still took away their highlights and walked away looking forward to what’s next. Nevertheless, the album performed very well commercially, and we’ll see how its legacy continues to shift in 2025’s hip-hop landscape.

As for Eminem, he’s a grandfather now: Spotify streams and records are probably not at the forefront of his mind right now. He recently provided another killer collaboration with JID for the Dreamville spitter’s album “preluxe.” So Marshall Mathers continues to spit; it’s just not as often as some fans would like. Still, if a new album from him hits it big with audiences, he might just take this silver medal back from Travis Scott one day.

Commercial conversations don’t matter much in the grand scheme of hip-hop, but it’s always interesting to see which superstars dominate where. One person’s sales numbers are another person’s discography, and hardcore lyricists don’t care about either. So everyone’s got their standards.

Sean Kingston’s Mother, Janice Turner, Sentenced In Fraud Case

This year, Sean Kingston’s mother Janice Turner was convicted on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud.

Earlier this year, Sean Kingston and his mother Janice Turner were convicted on various fraud charges, and one of them has now learned their fate. According to AllHipHop, Turner was sentenced on Tuesday (July 22) to five years in federal prison and three years of supervised release. On top of her sentence, she’s been ordered to pay restitution to the victims, though the final amount has not yet been determined.

News of Turner’s sentence comes just a couple days after she asked Judge David S. Leibowitz for 30 months. This is less than half of what the sentencing guidelines recommended, which was 63 to 78 months. Her team argued that even the lower end of that range would be too harsh of a punishment for a 62-year-old with “a myriad of health issues” and “minimal criminal history.”

“Ms. Turner will go to prison; she has earned the prison sentence,” her attorneys stated at the time. “However, a sentence greater than thirty months is a waste of taxpayer resources based upon the history and characteristics of Ms. Turner.”

Turner addressed the judge directly before receiving her sentence. “I’m sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry. They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son,” she told him.

Her team says they plan to appeal parts of the ruling. “It was a hard-fought sentence, so we have mixed feelings on it,” her attorney Humberto Dominguez explained, per NBC6. “We won on some points and obviously lost on some points. All of which will be handled on appeal. So we have mixed feelings on it. Overall, the judge tried to do what was right and what was fair.”

As for Kingston, he did not attend the sentencing, but reportedly submitted a letter in support of his mother. His own sentencing is scheduled to take place on August 28. He is currently on house arrest after posting bond.

Super Falcons visit injured Banyana Banyana star in hospital

Super Falcons of Nigeria players paid a heartfelt visit to injured Banyana Banyana star Gabriela Salgado in Casablanca, Morocco, on Wednesday, following their intense WAFCON 2024 semi-final clash.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade led the delegation, accompanied by teammates Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. The Nigerian players met Salgado at the Mohamed VI Hospital, where they presented her with a Super Falcons jersey signed by the entire squad as a gesture of solidarity and goodwill.

Salgado was stretchered off late in the second half of South Africa’s dramatic 2-1 loss to Nigeria on Tuesday night. She underwent successful surgery on Wednesday and remains under medical supervision.

The 27-year-old midfielder is unfortunately expected to miss the rest of the year due to the severity of the injury.

The entire Banyana Banyana squad also visited Salgado on Tuesday night once her condition had stabilized, showing strong team unity and support.

This gesture from the Super Falcons highlights the spirit of sportsmanship and mutual respect that transcends competition on the African stage.

Trump gets fact check from Jerome Powell to his face as presser goes awry

0

President Donald Trump received a brutal fact-check from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Thursday during a tour of the renovated Federal Reserve headquarters.

Trump claimed that the total cost of the project had soared from $2.7 billion to $3.1 billion, a figure that surprised Powell. Trump then handed Powell a paper that purported to show where the cost overrun occurred. In response, Powell told Trump that his numbers were wrong.

“You’re including the Martin renovation,” Powell said, referring to another renovation project that occurred in 2021. “You just added in a third building.”

“Yeah, but it’s a building that’s being built,” Trump responded.

“That project ended five years ago,” Powell shot back.

Trump has repeatedly used the Federal Reserve headquarters renovation project as a means of attacking Powell publicly. The project initially had a $2.5 billion budget, but cost overruns have pushed the total up to $2.7 billion.

Thailand and Cambodia start war with at least 11 d3ad

A dangerous escalation unfolded on Thursday as Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military targets near their disputed border, following a series of deadly clashes that have claimed at least 11 civilian lives.

The conflict, which threatens to spiral into a broader regional confrontation, follows the injury of a Thai soldier in a landmine explosion on Wednesday. The incident prompted Thailand to shut down all border crossings with Cambodia.

Thailand’s northeastern 2nd Regional Military Command announced via Facebook that F-16 fighter jets had been deployed and claimed two Cambodian military support units were “destroyed.” Army spokesperson Col. Richa Suksuwanont confirmed the strikes were aimed solely at military targets.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense responded by condemning the airstrikes, which reportedly occurred near the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear temple. The ministry described the action as “brutal, barbaric military aggression” and a violation of international law.

“Cambodia reserves the right to lawful self-defense and will respond decisively,” the statement warned. “Our armed forces are fully prepared to defend the kingdom’s sovereignty—whatever the cost.”

Military officials confirmed that armed clashes broke out at six locations along the disputed border earlier on Thursday. Civilians were among the casualties, with homes, livestock, and public infrastructure damaged.

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health confirmed 11 civilian deaths and at least 35 injuries. Among the victims was an 8-year-old boy, the Thai military reported.

A Cambodian rocket reportedly struck a busy gas station in Kantharalak, Sisaket province, killing six people and injuring ten others. Geolocated video footage shows a damaged 7-Eleven store, smoke, and wounded individuals lying outside.

Thailand further accused Cambodian forces of firing BM-21 Grad rockets into civilian areas in Surin province, including at a local hospital. Footage aired by Thai PBS showed residents running for cover amid gunfire and sheltering in bunkers.

“The Royal Thai Armed Forces condemns these inhumane attacks on civilian targets and is prepared to respond to protect our sovereignty and citizens,” a military statement read.

Thailand also accused Cambodia of planting landmines inside Thai territory, another breach of international law.

Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai described the situation as “delicate” and emphasized that any response must remain within the bounds of international law.

Meanwhile, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to “stop Thailand’s aggression.”

The latest clashes follow the injury of five Thai soldiers in a landmine explosion on Wednesday. In response, Thailand downgraded diplomatic ties with Cambodia—recalling its ambassador and expelling Cambodia’s envoy from Bangkok.

The two nations share a complex relationship, with decades of both cooperation and tension. Their 800-kilometer border, drawn by French colonialists during their rule of Cambodia, has long been a flashpoint.

In 2011, skirmishes near the Preah Vihear temple left at least 20 people dead and displaced thousands.

This latest flare-up reportedly began early Thursday when Cambodia deployed a drone near the Ta Muen Thom temple—located near the border in Thailand’s Surin province. Thailand claimed Cambodian troops fired on a Thai army base, triggering the exchange of gunfire with small arms and heavy weapons.

Cambodia, however, disputes this account. Defense Ministry spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata insisted their forces were responding to “an unprovoked incursion” by Thai troops.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also accused Thailand of attacking Cambodian army positions at several temple sites, urging citizens to remain calm and unified. The landmine attacks, which cost two Thai soldiers their legs in the past week, have only intensified the situation.

Tensions have spilled into domestic politics. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended earlier this month after a leaked phone call with Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen—Hun Manet’s father—surfaced, in which she appeared to question her own army’s conduct.

According to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political science professor at Chulalongkorn University, the conflict “is likely to get worse before it gets better,” warning that further escalation may be imminent.

Liverpool confirm £79m signing of striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt

Premier League champions, Liverpool, have signed Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth £79m (€91m).

Liverpool will pay an initial fee of £69m (€80m) plus £10m (€12.5m) in add-ons for the striker as their summer spending edges towards £300m

The French striker is expected to join up with the squad in Hong Kong in the next 48 hours for training sessions ahead of Saturday’s fixture against AC Milan.

A club statement read: “Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, subject to international clearance.

“The 23-year-old has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms with the Reds, allowing him to fly out to Hong Kong to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week.”

The deal for Ekitiké, which is subject to international clearance, takes Liverpool’s summer spending to almost £300m. The former Paris Saint-Germain player is the club’s seventh signing of the window, following Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and a trio of goalkeepers: Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman.

Ekitiké scored 22 goals and made 12 assists in his one full season at Frankfurt, helping the club to qualify for the Champions League, and while he is primarily a No 9 Liverpool believe he can also operate as a second striker or out wide.

Donations surge after GOP defunds NPR and PBS

Republicans in Congress may have voted to defund publicly funded media outlets in the United States, but American citizens are trying to fill the gap.

The New York Times reports that donations to public media have surged ever since the GOP voted to eliminate $550 million in annual funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR).

Citing numbers from the Contributor Development Partnership, a firm that provides analysis of public media fundraising data, The Times reports that donors this year have so far contributed $70 million more to NPR and PBS than they did over the same period the year before. The numbers also show that “over the last three months, as the prospect of the cuts intensified, roughly 120,000 new donors have contributed an estimated $20 million in annual value,” writes the Times.

Contributor Development Partnership CEO Michal Heiplik tells the Times that these donations, while impressive, are still a long way from being able to fill the $550 million hole left by GOP cuts.

“It is still early, and we hope the support will continue to grow,” he said. “Next few weeks will be telling.”

Heiplik also tells the Times that more donors in recent months have signed up to become sustaining members, which he says will be helpful in ensuring both entities have sustained finances instead of having to rely on one-time bursts of donations.

The vast majority of funding for public media has long come from donors, with only a small percentage coming from the federal government.

Newly unearthed photos show top Trump official partying with Jeffrey Epstein

0

Another member of President Donald Trump’s inner circle has been shown with ties to deceased financier and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein: Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

According to The Daily Beast, in addition to taking trips on Epstein’s private plane, recently resurfaced pictures “show RFK Jr. at a New York Academy of Art gala with Epstein in in 1994, while files from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office show a listing for ‘Kennedy, Bobby & Mary’ in Epstein’s ‘little black book,’ which featured contacts for socialites and politicians, as well as the girls he sexually assaulted.”

Kennedy has been open about his ties to Epstein to some extent, saying during his independent presidential run last year before being named to Trump’s cabinet, “I was on Jeffrey Epstein’s jet two times. My wife had some kind of relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell, and they offered us a ride to Palm Beach.”

Trump himself is facing renewed questions about his decades-old friendship with Epstein following the Justice Department’s announcement they had concluded their review of the Epstein sex trafficking case without making a majority of the files public, or unearthing a supposed “client list” Attorney General Pam Bondi had previously claimed was on her desk — outraging Trump’s own base and sending the White House into a scramble for damage control.

The controversy deepened following the Wall Street Journal’s reporting about a lewd birthday letter Trump sent Epstein in 2003, and reporting that Bondi alerted Trump he was in the Epstein files earlier this year, despite Trump denying she had told him any such thing a week ago. Trump has denied all of these reports and is moving to sue the Journal over the birthday letter story.

Kennedy, who hails from a legendary political dynasty, once operated in Democratic Party circles, but was estranged from his former allies as he sank deeper into conspiracy theories about vaccines and medical science.

Trump overheard in vulgar Oval Office panic over Epstein

President Donald Trump is reportedly in full panic mode, using profanity during a heated Oval Office moment as pressure mounts over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, according to an inside source who spoke with Politico.

“They’re going to accuse me of some funny business,” Trump reportedly said recently in the Oval Office, according to a Republican with close ties to the White House who personally heard the president’s remarks.

The Republican went on to say that Trump “maintained his distance” from the criminal behavior of Epstein, a billionaire who operated a sex-trafficking operation victimizing young girls.

But Trump was overheard complaining that ‘they’re going to f— me anyways.”

Trump has struggled to control the narrative as it relates to Epstein, whose past relationship with Trump has been under heightened scrutiny in recent weeks since the Justice Department memo earlier this month shut down further investigation and disclosures into the convicted sex offender, much to the chagrin of many of Trump’s supporters.

Scrutiny increased further following two bombshell reports from The Wall Street Journal; one revealing new details about Trump and Epstein’s relationship, suggesting it was more intimate than previously known, and another revealing that Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump his name appeared in the Epstein files in May, despite Trump denying as much a month later in June.

Yet despite Trump employing a number of tactics critics have labeled as distractions — including a presentation Wednesday suggesting the DOJ may indict his longtime political opponent, former President Barack Obama — none have seemed to land with his base, or quell dissent among his own party.

The fallout over Epstein has been so severe that Trump administration officials have reportedly been prohibited from even speaking of Epstein without high-level vetting, another effort by the Trump administration to sweep its latest controversy under the rug.

Ex-Pam Bondi staffer says Trump cutting ‘hidden pardon’ deal with Ghislaine Maxwell

0

A former official who worked with Attorney General Pam Bondi in Florida predicted that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche would strike a “hidden pardon” deal with Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

As Blanche was reportedly meeting with Maxwell on Thursday, Bondi’s former border czar, Dave Aronberg, called the move “extraordinary.”

“I can’t overstate it, Brianna. It’s as if the number two executive at CNN was conducting this interview with me instead of you,” he told CNN’s Brianna Keilar. “Like, what? It never happens. Also, he’s not going to be knowledgeable about this case like the line prosecutors who actually handled her case. Like, Maurene Comey, but she was fired.”

“But there are others who could do this, which makes me believe this is a lot about perhaps some politics involved, like maybe to protect the president, to get a deal with Ghislaine Maxwell that she would get some immunity now and maybe a hidden pardon in the future, some sort of implication that she would be pardoned in the future if she comes out and says that the president was exonerated, not involved in any criminal activity,” he explained.

Aronberg observed that there was no evidence Trump was involved in criminal activity, “but his name appears in the files.”

“And Trump doesn’t want to be anywhere near this smoke. That’s why he’s sending his trusted former defense lawyer, the number two person of the Department of Justice, to go see Ghislaine Maxwell herself,” he added.

Ukraine sees first major anti-government protests since war began after Zelensky limits the autonomy of anti-corruption bodies

Ukraine has witnessed its first large-scale anti-government protests since Russia’s full-scale invasion began over three years ago, sparked by President Volodymyr Zelensky’s approval of a controversial law that weakens two of the country’s top anti-corruption agencies.

Protesters gathered in Kyiv, Lviv, and other cities on Tuesday, following the swift passage of legislation that places the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) under the control of the prosecutor general — a politically appointed position. Critics say the law threatens the independence of these institutions and could derail Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.

The EU has repeatedly stressed that a robust and independent anti-corruption framework is essential for Ukraine’s accession process. The Biden administration also pushed Kyiv to intensify anti-corruption efforts in 2023. Transparency International, the European Union, and several Western allies have now openly criticized the move.

Marta Kos, the EU’s top official overseeing accession talks, called the development “a serious step back.” She wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“The dismantling of key safeguards protecting NABU’s independence is a serious step back. Independent bodies like NABU and SAPO are essential for Ukraine’s EU path. Rule of law remains at the center of accession negotiations.”

The law was fast-tracked through the Verkhovna Rada and signed by Zelensky on Tuesday night. In his nightly address, Zelensky defended the move as a necessary step to remove alleged Russian influence from within the agencies. His remarks followed raids by Ukrainian authorities on one of the agencies and the arrest of two employees accused of working for Russian intelligence.

Zelensky said the previous system had led to years of stalled cases and argued that oversight by the prosecutor general would increase accountability. “Everyone will work solely in a constructive manner to resolve existing issues, deliver greater justice, and truly protect the interests of Ukrainian society,” he said Wednesday.

However, the law grants the prosecutor general sweeping powers over the agencies, including influence over investigations and the authority to reassign or block cases — changes critics say will erode the agencies’ effectiveness and independence.

Public criticism has come from across the political spectrum. Former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the day the bill passed as a “bad day for Ukraine.”

Even soldiers on the front lines expressed dismay. Yegor Firsov, a chief sergeant in a drone strike unit, posted on X:

“This isn’t about NABU or SAPO. This is about barbarism. Nothing is more demoralizing than knowing that while you’re in a trench, someone is robbing the country your brothers are dying for.”

The agencies themselves issued a rare joint statement on Wednesday, warning they had been “deprived of guarantees” that enabled them to fight high-level corruption effectively. They called on the government to reverse the legislation.

Transparency International’s Ukrainian chapter urged Zelensky to veto the bill, calling it a dismantling of “one of the greatest achievements” of Ukraine’s post-2014 Revolution of Dignity — the peaceful uprising that ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych and ushered in pro-European reforms.

NABU and SAPO were created in the revolution’s aftermath to investigate and prosecute high-level corruption. NABU handles investigations, while SAPO prosecutes based on NABU’s findings. Both agencies have been seen as vital to Ukraine’s broader anti-corruption architecture.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine called the new law “disappointing,” stating that it “threatens the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption infrastructure and undermines trust in the country’s anti-corruption efforts.”

The Agency for Legislative Initiatives (ALI), a Kyiv-based think tank, called the new law a “180-degree turn” from Ukraine’s European integration goals. ALI warned that the prosecutor general would now wield near-unlimited powers, including the ability to reassign or effectively stall investigations. It also noted that the law’s provisions will remain in place for three years beyond the end of martial law, raising concerns about its long-term implications.

Tackling corruption was a central promise of Zelensky’s 2019 campaign. A former comedian with no prior political experience, he surged to victory on a platform of transparency and reform. During the war, his administration won praise from Western partners for cracking down on corruption, firing top officials, and implementing a National Anti-Corruption Strategy.

Now, some of those same international partners are voicing concern. Critics argue that Zelensky’s latest move undermines years of hard-earned progress.

“He promised to fight corruption,” said one protester in Kyiv. “Instead, he’s weakening the very tools created to fight it.”

White House appointee, other top politicians are calling for Tory Lanez to be pardoned

Two American politicians recently joined the chorus of people calling for the release of convicted Canadian singer and rapper Tory Lanez.

Per XXL, former New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley and White House appointee Jack Brewer issued separate statements calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to grant Lanez, 32, a pardon.

“I humbly implore you to exercise your authority…to grant clemency, correcting a grave injustice and safeguarding a life,” Holley wrote in his July 3 petition to Newsom. “Mr. Peterson’s conviction rests on unstable foundations.”

Brewer similarly took to X to express his support for The Color Violet singer. “As an advocate for 2nd Chance Fathers, I can’t stay silent about Tory Lanez,” he shared. “This is another broken case that points to someone else, another father is lost to a system that rewards headlines over truth. Fatherlessness is destroying our nation. If Tory was an illegal alien there would be protests in the streets. It’s not right.”

As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Lanez, born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, allegedly shot female rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an argument after they left a pool party hosted at reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood mansion in July 2020. Megan, whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, had to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot following the shooting.

In December 2022, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty on three gun-related charges in the shooting. He was convicted of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

Lanez has, however, maintained his innocence, and his legal team is still pushing for his release from prison and trying to get Gov. Newsom to grant him a pardon. His legal team also claims it has discovered new and unsubstantiated evidence. Lanez’s legal team added more pressure to their campaign to get him released after he was stabbed by a fellow inmate in May.

The statements from Holley and Brewer also came after California Rep. Anna Paulina Luna similarly called on Gov. Newsom to look into Lanez’ case and grant him a pardon. But in a statement to XXL, Megan’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, disagreed with the politicians calling for Lanez’s release and called them attention seekers. Spiro also reiterated that Lanez was guilty of the crime.

Grandma takes down woman who tries to storm cockpit on Delta Airlines flight: ‘literally saved everyone’

Nicole Pruitt, fondly known as “Mama Nicky,” has been branded a hero for potentially saving everyone’s life on her Delta trip from Atlanta to Tucson by taking command of a tense situation, as seen in a viral video.

The video, originally posted on TikTok by user @amorfatitestlab, shows a Black woman standing over a white woman whose arms are bound behind her back with a makeshift restraint. The technique is known as the hogtie.

The passengers on the video claim that the white woman tried to open the cockpit and emergency exit doors as she ran from the back of the aircraft to the front.

In a subsequent video that Pruitt’s son Tyrique Perry also shared, he claims that his mother, seated in first class, gave the traveler “an a–– whupping she won’t forget.”

According to Perry, the disruptive passenger attempted to break into the cockpit and open the emergency exit doors during the flight.

The woman allegedly “overpowered the stewards,” while male passengers were hesitant to intervene. The woman could be heard shouting, “God will protect me” and “The Lord is my Shepherd.”

According to Perry, his mother eventually “had to take matters into her own hands to protect herself and all the other passengers on board.”

Pruitt, a retired United States Army officer who resides in Arizona, was prepared for situations like these.

“This chick came all the way from the— back,” Pruitt recalled on the TikTok video.

She continued, “She said, I don’t want to be on the plane. God got my … What has she said? She said, I have a calling and God told me to do it….God tell you to do what? You are there to find out… No, I want this f— and find out.”

She continued, “I had an earpiece in my ear. I put that— in my little seat pocket right there. ‘Please. Excuse me,’ I said. I’m gonna beat her a— right now.”

The 26-year veteran later told 13 News, “Nobody else was doing nothing, so I just knew I had to do something. I’ve got to make it home to my kids, my children, my grandchildren.”

At the time of the incident, Pruitt was heading to Arizona from her home in Georgia to meet her new grandson.

Perry added, “Those are kids on that plane that have a whole life to live, those are grandparents on that plane, just people full of life and potential.”

Although the passenger’s motives were unclear, many feel Pruitt prevented a terrorist act or threat.

As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, a Delta flight from Atlanta to Tucson, Flight 937, was forced to return to Hartsfield-Jackson after a passenger caused an emergency mid-air.

According to a Delta representative, the flight crew decided to turn the jet around and return to Atlanta after the plane had been in the air for almost an hour on July 16 due to a customer’s “situation.”

When the plane touched down in Atlanta, emergency medical personnel were waiting for it. Law enforcement was notified, but the individual was not arrested. Delta later resumed the trip to Tucson, arriving over three hours later than scheduled.

The plane carried 180 people, including crew members and pilots.

“Delta sincerely appreciates the actions of our crew and customers for de-escalating this situation,” stated airline spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau in a statement.

Meanwhile, many netizens believe that Mama Nicky must be honored for her bravery.

One person wrote, “Your mom is a hero! They should give her free delta flights for life for saving everyone.”

Another noted, “As a flight attendant the one place people shouldn’t be a bystander is on the airplane. It’s literally life or death, if the crew is asking for help. HELP!”

Another suggested, “Come on Delta! She needs life time first class tickets!!!!! She LITTERALLY saved everyone!!”

Man Sentenced to Decades in Prison for Killing Somebody Over Five Dollars

Jaquantis McGee, who is from Jackson, Mississippi, will spend over two decades in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting a man during a fight over $5. The victim, Wendell Knowles, was shot in the chest outside a gas station.

In the incident that happened on April 1, 2022, McGee, also known by the nickname “Kodak,” walked up to Knowles and asked, “Where’s my $5?” Before Knowles could respond, McGee pulled out a gun and fired a single shot.

According to WLBT, Knowles, 31, died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest. The incident happened outside a gas station in Jackson.

Three years later, McGee, now 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. A judge sentenced him to 34 years in prison, with 12 years suspended.

He will serve the remaining 22 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. He won’t be eligible for early release or parole.

Police confirmed that the deadly shooting stemmed from a dispute over $5. No other motive was identified.

GloRilla speaks out following her recent arrest

GloRilla was not home when suspects invaded her home and robbed her house, but police charged her for some weed in her closet.

GloRilla dropped a $22,260 bond after her arrest on drug charges. But she and her legal team are not happy with how this situation came about. Police discovered marijuana in Glo’s closet while responding to a home invasion that took place at her house while she wasn’t there.

Specifically, the Memphis femcee took to Twitter to address this issue. She scolded law enforcement for presenting drug possession charges against her rather than focusing on the robbers, who are still at large at press time.

“CRAZY!!” the “SHYNE” artist tweeted on Thursday (July 24). “My House got Home Invaded Saturday While I was in Indianapolis performing for the WNBA all star game. & instead of Focusing on finding the Suspects , they focus on some cannabis 1. So no I wasn’t busted 2. My house got robbed 3. I wasn’t home. Long story short my house gets home invaded and Im the only one that gets arrested. So that’s tea.”

We will see how this legal situation continues to develop into the future. For now, though, it seems like police will handle both cases.

“The arrest of Gloria Woods is a disturbing window into how warped law enforcement priorities have become,” GloRilla’s attorneys stated. “Ms. Woods was out of town when her residence became a target for a group of home invaders who most likely knew she wasn’t there. What they didn’t know was that she had family staying with her that were traumatized by the violent entrance of this group who grabbed high-value jewelry. [They took off] once they realized the home wasn’t vacant.

“When her family members did the right thing and called law enforcement, instead of investigating the violent home invasion and theft at Ms. Woods’ home, they instead sought a search warrant when they spotted what they believed was a small amount of marijuana,” the statement continued. “Law enforcement then sought arrest warrants for her even though she hadn’t been at her home for some time. No arrest warrants [were] issued for the violent home invaders. Ms. Woods is a victim, not a suspect. This is our tax dollars at work, absolutely unbelievable.”

Couple banned from airline after performing 0r@l s33x on flight

A couple has been banned from flying with JetBlue airline after being accused of some nasty airplane behavior.

The couple from Connecticut were reportedly seen engaging in 0ral s£x in full view of other passengers during a flight.

According to a report from TMZ, citing court documents, Trista Reilly and Christopher Drew Arnold have been charged with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious exhibition for their alleged conduct on a flight over the weekend.

The TMZ report states the two were flying JetBlue from New York to Florida when another passenger allegedly noticed Reilly making “up-and-down movements with her head while she was face down” in Arnold’s lap. Reilly also allegedly m@sturbated Arnold while they were in their seats.

The report states two children were sitting near Reilly and Arnold and allegedly saw the whole thing go down. According to the documents, their mother complained that Reilly “didn’t care that the kids were watching her.”

As for the airline, a rep from JetBlue told TMZ, “This behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by JetBlue. Immediately upon receiving the report, our crewmembers acted swiftly to engage JetBlue’s security team and law enforcement. We are fully cooperating with the investigation and these customers are no longer welcome to fly JetBlue.”

The documents obtained claim the alleged s£xual encounter happened as the plane was taking off though it’s unclear how long everything lasted, how it was ended or if anyone was forced to break it up.

After the plane landed at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport both Reilly and Arnold were arrested. They’ve reportedly been ordered not to have any contact with the witnesses of their alleged act and will be arraigned in August.

Former Man United striker Javier Hernandez fined for saying women should allow themselves to be led by men

Former Manchester United striker, Javier Hernandez, has been fined and warned about his future conduct after making s£xist remarks on social media.

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said the 37-year-old, now with Liga MX side Chivas, made a series of statements “promoting s£xist stereotypes that are considered media violence and go against gender equality in sport” on TikTok.

The striker said on social media that women are “failing” and “eradicating masculinity”.

“Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man,” said the former Mexico captain.

The comments, which were made last weekend, were met with a backlash in Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, the country’s first female president, said: “Chicharito is a very good soccer [player] but when it comes to his opinion on women… he still has a lot to learn.”

In a joint statement, the FMF and Mexico’s top men’s and women’s leagues said the Gender and Diversity Commission has started an investigation “that seeks to prevent and punish this behaviour” and it will “take more severe measures in the event of a repeat offence”.

Chivas said the comments were “contrary to the principles and values” of the club and that they had taken “appropriate action” against Hernandez, though they did not specify which action.

Hernandez, Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, joined Manchester United from Chivas in 2010. He spent four years at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League twice.

After spells with Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, he returned to the Premier League with West Ham for a three-season stint between 2017 and 2020.

Hernandez then joined Sevilla from the Hammers, before spending four seasons with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.

He returned to his former club Chivas in 2023, signing a two-year deal.

According to a TMZ report, the TGIF hitmaker was released on the same day after posting $22,000 bond. Both counts are felony offenses under Georgia law.

The outlet noted that other details around the arrest are unknown at this time.

It comes a year after the star, real name Gloria Woods, was arrested in Georgia’s Gwinnett County on DUI charges.

You were born a MAN, you will d!e a man –  Candace Owens responds to French First Lady’s defamation lawsuit

Controversial conservative commentator, Candace Owens has responded to a defamation lawsuit filed by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, over her claims that the French First Lady was born male.

Addressing the lawsuit on her YouTube channel, Owens remained defiant on her allegation and said she’s ready to face the Macrons in court.

“You were born a man and you will die a man. That’s the point I’m making,” Owens said. “So give us a sample. I’ll send my doctors to take your blood. We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron sued the right-wing media personality for defamation after Owens claimed in several videos that Macron’s wife Brigitte could be a man.

The suit charges Owens with 22 counts of defamation as part of “a campaign of global humiliation” intended to generate profit for Owens and her companies.

According to the complaint, Owens published a video in March of 2025 titled “Is France’s First Lady a Man?” Several other videos followed, including a multi-part series.

The suit alleges that Owens has also sold merchandise related to the claim.

The complaint against Owens states that she “was repeatedly presented with credible, verifiable evidence disproving her claims—including documentation, public records, and direct outreach from the Macrons.”

In the suit, the Macrons say they have suffered economic damage and loss of business opportunities. They are suing Owens for punitive damages.

Owens said in early 2024 that she would “stake [her] entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man.” Since then, she has doubled down on these claims and added more, including in an eight-part podcast series called Becoming Brigitte, the lawsuit alleges.

The Macrons sought retractions from Owens, the suit says, for the “demonstrably false” claims she has made about them but she instead “mocked them and used them as additional fodder for her frenzied fan base”.

“These outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions included that Mrs Macron was born a man, stole another person’s identity, and transitioned to become Brigitte; Mrs Macron and President Macron are blood relatives committing incest; President Macron was chosen to be the President of France as part of the CIA-operated MKUltra program or a similar mind-control program; and Mrs Macron and President Macron are committing forgery, fraud, and abuses of power to conceal these secrets.

US President Donald Trump says he will not destroy Elon Musk’s companies

US President Donald Trump said he would not destroy Elon Musk’s companies by removing federal subsidies and insisted he wants the billionaire entrepreneur’s businesses to thrive.

“Everyone is stating that I will destroy Elon’s companies by taking away some, if not all, of the large-scale subsidies he receives from the U.S. government. This is not so,” Trump said in a social media post. “I want Elon, and all businesses within our country, to thrive.”

The statement follows a public fallout between Trump and Musk on June 5 over tax policy. Musk had warned Tesla investors on Wednesday that cuts in U.S. government support for electric vehicle makers could lead to a “few rough quarters” for the company.

A week after their clash, the White House reportedly instructed the Defense Department and NASA to gather details on billions of dollars in SpaceX contracts, potentially preparing for retaliation against Musk and his companies.

Musk had contributed more than a quarter of a billion dollars to support Trump’s reelection campaign and had briefly led the Department of Government Efficiency in an effort to slash federal spending and reduce the workforce. He stepped down from the role in late May to refocus on his technology ventures.

Their relationship soured shortly afterward, when Musk criticized Trump’s tax-cut and spending bill. Trump responded by threatening to cancel federal contracts worth billions awarded to Musk’s companies.

SpaceX had been considered a leading candidate to help develop Trump’s $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense shield. However, sources familiar with the matter said the administration is now broadening its search for alternative partners, as tensions between Trump and Musk raise questions about SpaceX’s continued dominance in the program.

8 Things You Probably Did Not Know About WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan

8 Things You Probably Did Not Know About WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan

As the world mourns the sudden death of WWE icon Hulk Hogan, few figures in professional wrestling history loom as large.

Born Terry Gene Bollea, the legendary superstar defined an era, transformed wrestling into mainstream entertainment, and became a global icon.

While millions remember his “Hulkamania” legacy, signature mustache, and thunderous leg drop, there’s a wealth of lesser-known stories that shaped his journey — both inside and outside the ring.

While millions remember his “Hulkamania” legacy, signature mustache, and thunderous leg drop, there’s a wealth of lesser-known stories that shaped his journey — both inside and outside the ring.

Here are eight surprising things you probably didn’t know about the Immortal Hulk Hogan:

  1. A Promising Baseball Career Cut Short
Long before he stepped into the ring, Hogan had dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. A standout Little League pitcher in Florida, he was scouted by both the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds.

However, a serious throwing-arm injury during his senior year of high school abruptly ended those hopes, forcing him to shift his focus — eventually toward wrestling.

  1. Trained by Tough Love — Literally
Hogan’s wrestling training began under the infamous Hiro Matsuda, who didn’t go easy on him. On Hogan’s very first day, Matsuda snapped his leg as a test of mental toughness and commitment — a brutal initiation meant to weed out the uncommitted. Most would have quit, but Hogan returned just four months later, proving his resilience.
  2. Many Names Before Becoming “Hulk Hogan”
Before the world knew him as Hulk Hogan, Bollea tried on several ring names, including Sterling Golden, Terry “The Hulk” Boulder, and even a masked persona known as Super Destroyer.

It wasn’t until promoter Vince McMahon Sr. suggested the Irish-sounding name “Hogan” in 1979 that his iconic identity was born. Hogan once joked that it sounded more like a sandwich than a superstar.

  1. WWE Fame and Hall of Fame Honors
Hogan joined the then-WWF in 1979 and revolutionized the business. He headlined the first WrestleMania, slammed André the Giant in one of wrestling’s most iconic moments, and won the WWE Championship six times.

His impact earned him a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2020, he was inducted a second time as a member of the nWo (New World Order), the rebellious faction that reinvented him during his WCW years.

  1. A Legal Battle That Shook the Media Industry
In 2016, Hogan won a groundbreaking lawsuit against Gawker Media after the outlet published a bedroom tape without his consent. A Florida jury awarded him over $115 million in damages, later increased to $140 million. The verdict not only led to Gawker’s bankruptcy but also set a powerful legal precedent around privacy rights for public figures.
  2. A Career Marred by Controversy
Despite his achievements, Hogan’s career was dogged by scandal. In 2015, leaked audio revealed him using racist language. WWE severed ties and scrubbed his presence from their platforms.

After public apologies and a period of rehabilitation, he was reinstated in the Hall of Fame in 2018.
Earlier in the 1990s, Hogan was also linked to steroid distribution during a broader federal investigation — though he admitted to use, he avoided prosecution.

7. The Toll of Wrestling: 25+ Surgeries

Hogan’s body paid a steep price for his decades in the ring. Over the last ten years, he reportedly endured more than 25 surgeries — including 10 on his back, as well as replacements for both knees, hips, and multiple shoulder procedures.

His daughter Brooke once confirmed he suffered a serious MRSA infection following shoulder surgery. Hogan openly shared his struggles with pain and later turned to CBD to manage symptoms and avoid opioid dependency.

  1. Legal Fight Over Alleged Medical Malpractice
In 2013, Hogan filed a $50 million lawsuit against the Laser Spine Institute, claiming their treatments worsened his back issues and were medically unnecessary. He alleged that the procedures prevented him from earning millions and forced him to seek more effective spinal fusion surgery.

WHO PAYS FOR EMMANUEL  MWAMBA?

WHO PAYS FOR MWAMBA?

Questions Mount Over Emmanuel Mwamba’s Funding and Criminal Record Amid High-Profile International Activities

Emmanuel Mwamba, Zambia’s former diplomat and vocal critic of the government, is drawing scrutiny not only for his outspoken commentary and lavish international travel but also for his unresolved legal troubles, raising serious questions about the financial backing of his high-profile media presence and global movements.

Mwamba, a prominent figure in the Patriotic Front (PF), has cultivated a polished media brand through his “verified” show, characterised by slick production, sharp graphics, and professional-grade sound. His extended stay in the United States, coupled with a documented trip to London for the ARC conference in February 2025, points to significant financial resources. However, the absence of transparency regarding the funding of his activities, combined with his criminal record, has fueled speculation about the interests behind his operations.

Mwamba’s legal history adds a layer of complexity to his public persona. In February 2025, a Lusaka magistrate issued a bench warrant for Mwamba’s arrest after he failed to appear in court for a trial on charges of disorderly conduct stemming from an incident at Kabwata Police Station on February 27, 2023. He and three co-accused—Jacqueline Chopa, Gideon Tolopa, and Gift Kachingwe—were charged following an alleged altercation. Mwamba was reported to be in the United States at the time, with his sureties informing the court of his expected return on March 4, 2025. The court, unmoved, scheduled February 26, 2025, for the return of the warrant.

Additionally, Mwamba faces allegations of assaulting a police officer, a charge that led to his sureties, Msanzala MP Elias Daka and Mufulira MP Godwin Mwila, being remanded in custody until they paid K50,000 each in March 2025. Mwamba’s response, stating there was “no need to punish his sureties” as he would return soon, has done little to quell perceptions of him evading accountability. Critics argue that his continued absence from Zambia while facing these charges undermines his credibility as a commentator on governance and transparency.

Mwamba’s media ventures and international activities have intensified speculation about his financial backing. His show’s high production values suggest substantial investment, raising questions about whether he is self-funding through personal savings from his diplomatic career or receiving support from political allies, possibly within the Patriotic Front, or even international donors. No concrete evidence has surfaced to confirm these speculations, but the lack of disclosure keeps the issue alive.

Mwamba’s prolonged stay in the United States, where he has been active in cities like New York—where the average monthly cost of living exceeds $4,500 (K103,670)—further fuels curiosity. His commentary on American politics, such as the rise of New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani, indicates a level of integration into U.S. life that suggests more than a temporary visit.

A February 2025 trip to London, documented on social media with visits to attractions like the Cloud Cable Car, adds to the perception of a well-funded lifestyle. A round-trip flight from New York to London can cost upwards of $1,000, with a modest four-day stay in London approaching $3,000. Such expenses are difficult to sustain for most commentators without external support.

Critics, have hinted at “hidden hands” behind Mwamba’s activities, though no specific names or evidence have been provided. Some speculate that  covert political networks tied to the Patriotic Front may be involved, given Mwamba’s vocal support for the party and its former leader, Edgar Lungu. His critics argue that, as a public figure critiquing Zambia’s governance, Mwamba has a responsibility to disclose his funding sources to maintain credibility, especially given his legal troubles.- Koswe

HH CAN NEVER GIVE SOMEONE 12 MISSED CALLS, WORSE STILL AT 02:00 – STATE HOUSE

FULL ARTICLE: HH can never give someone 12 missed calls, worse still at 02:00 – Hamasaka

By Mwiche Nalwimba,

STATE House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka has distanced President Hakainde Hichilema from a viral audio recording purported to feature Robert Chabinga and Doreen Mwamba, stating that the President would never call someone 12 times.

On Sunday, a recording went viral featuring a voice believed to be that of PF faction acting president Robert Chabinga in conversation with another voice believed to be that of Community Development Minister Doreen Mwamba.

In the audio, Chabinga was explaining how he was sent on a “special assignment” to influence a South African judge to rule in favour of the Zambian government concerning Edgar Lungu’s burial rights.

And on Tuesday, PF acting president Given Lubinda challenged President Hichilema to tell the country whether he was involved in the audio saga.

“I would like to appeal to President Hakainde, your man Chabinga has told the whole world in no uncertain terms that the boss of Minister Doreen Mwamba called him 12 times and that when finally the boss spoke to Chabinga, he told him ‘I will tell Friday to call you’ and then Friday called and they spoke and he said ‘I follow the boss’s instructions’. And the instructions were for him to go to South Africa to go and bribe the South African judge, to go and organize stage-managed protests. Can you [President Hichilema] please tell us who is Doreen Mwamba’s other boss besides yourself? Can you ask Doreen Mwamba to explain to us sir that she has another boss besides you? Tell us sir that you are not the one who called Chabinga. Tell us sir what you expect of the Zambian people if indeed you are the one who is, through Chabinga, interfering or attempting to interfere with the independence of South Africa. What should we do?” asked Lubinda.

Commenting on this in an interview, Wednesday, Hamasaka said President Hichilema was not involved in any way with the claims being made in the audio.

“The people should not be judgmental, they should not use assumptions, that’s why I am saying let’s be truthful and remove the Head of State from this whole saga. I would rather people direct their issues on the people who are alleged in that thing, not the President. The President is never involved at any stage, at any level in that whole claim, in that conversation. Firstly, who have you ever called 12 missed calls? Have you ever called anybody more than 12 times? Even the time being alleged, do you really think the Head of State can be calling somebody at that time 12 missed calls? I can’t vouch for the audio. I can’t vouch the authenticity but I can vouch that whatever is being discussed there has nothing to do with the President. I can’t vouch the authenticity of the voices there, but what I can vouch is the fact that whatever is being claimed there is not true,” he said.

“The President can never call somebody more than 12 times, no way. So, you would probably be better off getting more clarification from whoever is being alleged in that conversation, the President has nothing to do with that. He (President Hichilema) has nothing to do with the so-called 12 missed calls, he can never ever give someone 12 missed calls, even worse at 02:00, 03:00 hours. I know the President, maybe the maximum he can give you is just one or two calls then thereafter he will tell you please call me back. I have never heard of anybody who has gotten five missed calls from the President, never”.

Hamasaka said President Hichilema could never be part of the schemes alleged in the said audio.

“Those who are aggrieved are free to take their own action as well, those who are aggrieved with the alleged audio which, as I have said, I can’t vouch for authenticity. And he can never make those schemes alleged in that audio. The President can never be part of those schemes which are being alleged in there. That audio, did you listen to it? Those people alleged to be talking there, did anyone mention the President by name? They were just saying ‘the boss, the boss,’ not so? So, who is that boss? Why are you assuming that ‘the boss’ means the President?” wondered Hamasaka.

“Who is Friday? Why are we having assumptions for heaven’s sake, why are we having those assumptions? How many Fridays are in this country? Is there only one person by the name of Friday in this country? Why are we making all those assumptions? That’s why I am saying people should [direct] most of those things to the people alleged to be in that audio, not dragging the name of the President, the Head of State”.

Who Stole USD 3.5 Billion? A Nation’s Wealth, A People’s Cry

Who Stole USD 3.5 Billion? A Nation’s Wealth, A People’s Cry

By Dr Mwelwa

In every village, the elders say, “When termites eat the pole of the hut, it does not fall at once—but one day, it will collapse.” That is the quiet danger of money that moves in the shadows—money stolen, hidden, and sent far away while the rest of the country struggles with hunger, joblessness, and poor roads. This year, Zambia’s Financial Intelligence Centre has told us a story. It is not the kind of story that makes us laugh. It is the kind that makes us stop and ask: What is happening to our country’s money?

The report says over USD 3.5 billion was moved illegally out of Zambia in 2024. That is more than K90 billion. It’s hard to imagine that kind of money. It is enough to build hundreds of hospitals, schools, and farms. But instead, this money slipped through our fingers—some through fake companies, others through foreign syndicates, and even through phones and computers.

Foreigners are working with some Zambians to send money out of the country. They open companies in people’s names—ordinary Zambians who don’t even know what’s going on. These companies don’t sell anything real, but they are used to collect and send large amounts of dollars to other countries. Some of the money is said to be for buying furniture, but no chairs or beds ever come.

The Centre also found that some people are using illegal ways to buy and sell minerals like copper and gold. They carry the money in bags across borders, skipping taxes and customs. On the Copperbelt, some groups are smuggling copper ore and paying others in cash, just to hide from the law. In other parts, trees like mopane are being cut and sent to other countries in secret, with no permits. These are our natural gifts being stolen, not just money.

The report even tells of people who pretend to be teachers or workers in fake companies, just to get loans from banks. Others use their phones to trick people into investing in cryptocurrency schemes, promising quick riches—but many Zambians end up losing everything. One company, for example, moved more than USD 30 million through fake online businesses. Some were even linked to terrorist groups, hiding under Zambian names.

Mobile money, which many of us use every day, is also being used in the wrong way. Some agents have wallets with very high limits. Foreigners and criminals are using these to send money outside the country. Because the checks are not strong, they can hide the true owner of the money.

But perhaps most painful is to read about the money lost in government. A few public officers and connected individuals took advantage of contracts and court rulings to steal millions. In one case, a company was paid USD 10 million, but half of it was stolen by people working inside government. In another, over USD 40 million was passed around companies owned by the same people, and some of that money was used to buy farms and lodges for important persons.

In total, the Financial Intelligence Centre sent 951 reports to authorities like police and the tax office. From these, ZRA collected assessments worth ZMW 28.9 billion. But only 3 convictions and 7 asset seizures have been confirmed. That is like pulling out a few rats while the rest are still dancing in the kitchen.

Our elders also say, “A child who cries and points at the bush is not pointing at nothing—either the mother or something is truly there.” This report is a cry. It is pointing to the bush. It is telling us that behind the walls of shiny buildings, behind smart suits and nice speeches, some people are working day and night to take away from the country. They are clever, but they are not invisible. The Financial Intelligence Centre has shown us the footprints.

But the question remains: Who will follow those footprints to the end? It is not enough to gather data and print reports. If nothing is done, then next year the same report will come again—only with bigger numbers and more pain.

As a people, we must not close our eyes. We must teach our children that quick money is not always clean money. We must demand better checks at borders, in banks, and in offices. And we must remember that “what eats the harvest is not the bird in the sky, but the bird that sits quietly on the branch pretending to be asleep.”

The harvest of Zambia must feed all its people—not just the few who know how to hide in the shadows. The time to act is now. Let the law bite—not just bark. Let justice come—not just to the poor man who steals a chicken, but also to the big man who steals the nation.

Let us guard the granary together. For when the granary is empty, even the strong man will eat dust.

High Court Upholds MUNIR ZULU Libel Sentence

High Court Upholds MUNIR ZULU   Libel Sentence

Former Lumezi Member of Parliament MUNIR ZULU has had his appeal dismissed by the Lusaka High Court, which has upheld his sham one-year sentence imposed by the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court.

This is in a matter where Mr. ZULU was convicted in April 2025 and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of libel.

In his appeal, Mr. ZULU argued, among other grounds, that the Magistrates’ Court had no jurisdiction to pronounce itself on a matter he claimed was constitutional in nature.

He further contended that the court failed to consider mitigating factors when arriving at the sentence.

However, High Court Judge BONAVENTURE MBEWE ruled that all nine grounds of appeal advanced by Mr. ZULU lacked merit in their entirety.

Judge MBEWE said he was satisfied that the lower court properly arrived at its sham judgment and had not erred in law or fact.

He added that the court found the trial magistrate to have been fair in delivering the sentence.

Judge MBEWE also ruled that Mr. ZULU could not invoke parliamentary privilege; as such privilege only applies to statements made on the floor of the National Assembly.

He concluded that there was no reasonable justification to interfere with the sentence imposed by the lower court.

Is the Leaked Chabinga Audio Legally Relevant?

 EDITORIAL | Is the Leaked Chabinga Audio Legally Relevant?

By now, most people know there is a legal battle in South Africa between the Zambian government and the family of the late President Edgar Lungu. The case centres on whether the body should be buried in Zambia or South Africa. The family insists on keeping it in South Africa. The State wants it home.

But then came the audio.

A recorded conversation allegedly between PF faction leader Robert Chabinga and a woman linked to government circles. It was leaked online. It mentions money, a judge, and fake protests. The implication? That some people were trying to interfere with the court process.

Based on inner sources, the Lungu family, reportedly given the audio by opposition actors, has included it in their submissions to the South African court.

But here is a legal question: is it relevant to the case?

Not really.

Legally, relevance is not about how scandalous something sounds. It’s about whether the evidence directly affects the issue at hand. In this case, that issue is where the body should be buried and who has the legal right to decide.

Unless the audio contains clear instructions from the Zambian State ordering the court to ignore the family’s wishes, it may not help much. Even worse, if the people in the recording are not named parties in the case and if the audio was not lawfully obtained, it could backfire. Courts follow rules. Politics does not.

There is also a technical point: the audio is not from a government official speaking in an official capacity. It is from people acting outside the court process, possibly without any authority. The link to State interference is circumstantial at best.

Still, it does one thing well i.e. the audio raises suspicion. And in a high-stakes case like this, suspicion can shape public opinion even if it does not sway the judge.

But courts don’t rule on vibes. They rule on facts.

The burial of a former Head of State should not be decided by who has the best leaked tape. It should be settled by law, family dignity, and truth.

That is the line. Everything else is just noise.

“DW Africa Reports: Zambian Government Denies Involvement in Leaked Audio Recording”

By Timmy

According to a report by DW Africa, the Zambian government has denied any connection to a leaked audio recording that allegedly reveals a plot to use illegal means to repatriate the body of former President Edgar Lungu from South Africa.

The audio, which features a female minister and a man connected to Lungu’s party, discusses bribing a judge and staging fake protests to push for the body’s return. However, the government claims the audio is false and politically motivated.

As reported by DW Africa, Lungu’s family has already handed the recording to a South African court, which has stopped the burial pending further investigation. A final decision on the matter is expected on August 4, 2025.

“Separating Fact from Fiction: President Hichilema’s Response to the Audio Allegations”

“Separating Fact from Fiction: President Hichilema’s Response to the Audio Allegations”

By Timmy

In the midst of controversy and scandal, President Hakainde Hichilema stands tall as a leader of unwavering integrity. The recent viral audio recording purportedly featuring Robert Chabinga and Doreen Mwamba has sparked intense debate, but one thing is clear: President Hichilema is a man of principle who would never engage in such deceitful activities.

State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka has come to the President’s defense, stating that President Hichilema would never call someone 12 times, especially at 02:00 or 03:00 hours. “The President can never call somebody more than 12 times, no way,” Hamasaka said. “I know the President, maybe the maximum he can give you is just one or two calls then thereafter he will tell you please call me back.”

This statement speaks volumes about President Hichilema’s character and leadership style. As the Head of State, he is a busy man who values his time and prioritizes his responsibilities. It’s unimaginable that he would waste his time on frivolous phone calls, let alone 12 missed calls in the dead of night.

Moreover, President Hichilema has consistently demonstrated his commitment to transparency and fairness in his efforts to allow former President Edgar Lungu to be buried in Zambia. Despite the challenges and controversies surrounding the issue, the President has worked tirelessly to ensure that the process is conducted in accordance with the law and with dignity.

Hamasaka emphasized that President Hichilema’s involvement in the alleged audio recording is unfounded, stating, “The President is never involved at any stage, at any level in that whole claim, in that conversation.” He urged the public to direct their concerns to the individuals allegedly involved in the audio recording, rather than making assumptions about the President’s involvement.

Given Lubinda’s challenge to President Hichilema to clarify his involvement in the audio saga, it’s clear that the PF is desperate to tarnish the President’s reputation. However, the facts speak for themselves. President Hichilema’s actions have always been guided by a sense of duty and responsibility, rather than personal gain or selfish motives.

President Hakainde Hichilema’s integrity and transparency are qualities that set him apart as a leader. We should reject baseless allegations and instead focus on building a brighter future for our nation. As Zambians, we should be proud of our President’s leadership and commitment to integrity.

Long live President Hakainde Hichilema!

HICHILEMA URGES POWER PRODUCERS TO END LOAD-SHEDDING FOR SALONS, COMPOUNDS

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has urged electricity producers in the country to accelerate power projects, saying it’s not right to load shed low energy consumers like salons and barbershops.

Mr Hichilema noted that all the progress in terms of increased power investments happening now is a result of the UPND’s sound leadership.

The Head of State urged power producers to take advantage of the New Dawn’s commitment and resolve to address historical energy sector bottlenecks by accelerating their investments.

Speaking at State House during a meeting with the Energy Traders Association, Mr Hichilema challenged them to ramp up the country’s power generation capacity.

“Why should we be load-shedding compounds, hairdressers, barbershops? Why should we be load-shedding citizens who are at the bottom? Why a big room like this cannot deliver a thousand megawatts of solar by December, what is the problem?

FRENCH PRESIDENT MACRON SUES RIGHT-WING PODCASTER OVER CLAIMS THAT FRANCE’S FIRST LADY WAS BORN MALE

FRENCH PRESIDENT MACRON SUES RIGHT-WING PODCASTER OVER CLAIMS THAT FRANCE’S FIRST LADY WAS BORN MALE

FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. on Wednesday against right-wing influencer and podcaster Candace Owens, centered on her claim that France’s first lady is male.

The Macrons said in a complaint filed in Delaware Superior Court that Owens has waged a lie-filled “campaign of global humiliation” to promote her podcast and expand her “frenzied” fan base.

These lies included that Brigitte Macron, 72, was born under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, the actual name of her older brother, the Macrons said.

“Owens has dissected their appearance, their marriage, their friends, their family, and their personal history, twisting it all into a grotesque narrative designed to inflame and degrade,” the complaint said.
“The result,” the complaint added, “is relentless bullying on a worldwide scale”.

In her podcast on Wednesday, Owens said, “This lawsuit is littered with factual inaccuracies,” and part of an “obvious and desperate public relations strategy” to smear her character.

Owens also said she did not know a lawsuit was coming, though lawyers for both sides had been communicating since January.

A spokesperson for Owens called the lawsuit itself an effort to bully her, after Brigitte Macron rejected Owens’ repeated requests for an interview.

“This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist,” the spokesperson said.

In a joint statement released by their lawyers, the Macrons said they sued after Owens rejected three demands that she retract defamatory statements.

“Ms. Owens’s campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety,” the Macrons said. “We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused.”

TI-Z PRELIMINARY RESPONSE TO THE 2024 FIC TRENDS
REPORT

TI-Z PRELIMINARY RESPONSE TO THE 2024 FIC TRENDS
REPORT

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) commends the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) for publishing the 2024 Trends Report.

The report indicates that the FIC detected suspected Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) worth USD $3.5 billion, mostly associated with commercial activities perpetuated by multinational enterprises.

In line with our recent study on risk factors for IFFs in Zambia, TI-Z calls for urgent government action to addressing the risk factors contributing to IFFs. These include the high use of cash transactions, mobile money fraud, and false invoicing aimed at justifying international transfers through the banking sector, among others.

TI-Z notes that the FIC analysed a total of 18,330 STRs, reflecting a 16.8% increase from the 15,696 STRs analysed in 2023.

TI-Z is however disappointed that the FIC analysed less STRs related to public sector corruption, resulting in the low number of disseminations on corruption as compared to cases relating to money laundering, fraud and tax evasion.

TI-Z wishes to remind the FIC that public sector corruption is a dangerous vice, with serious economic and social consequences, and thus requiring greater attention.

However, it is commendable that the overall number of disseminated financial intelligence reports to the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and foreign competent authorities increased from 923 in 2023 to 951 in 2024, representing a 3% increase. Out of these cases, 10 related to corruption, an increase from 9 cases disseminated in 2023.

The report also notes that feedback received from LEAs on disseminated reports indicates that 3 convictions and 7 non-conviction-based forfeitures were secured, resulting in get in touch with the forfeiture of assets valued at USD $26.5 million and K71.5 million in properties and cash.

The 2024 Trends Report also indicates that Commercial banks continue to be the highest reporting entities, with 8,710 reports received in 2024, representing 96.9% of the total STRs.

However, in 2024, Casinos filed 17 STRs as compared to none reported in 2023, on account of heightened awareness and enhanced supervision efforts by the FIC.

TI-Z calls on the FIC to further increase its awareness activities and to enhance its supervision over law firms, accounting firms, real estate agents and dealers in precious stones and minerals, and trust and company service providers that did not submit any STRs to the FIC in 2024.

These professional enablers pose a high risk for both public sector corruption and illicit financial flows. It is impossible that no suspicious activities are happening in these sectors, companies or institutions.

TI-Z is conducting a comprehensive analysis of the 2024 Trends report and will issue a comprehensive follow-up media statement in due course.

LUSAKA NAMED WORST PERFORMER IN CDF SPENDING

LUSAKA NAMED WORST PERFORMER IN CDF SPENDING

Lusaka Province has been named the worst-performing region in Constituency Development Fund (CDF) spending for the first half of 2025, with only 34% utilisation against funds disbursed and 28% against approved projects.

Permanent Secretary for Technical Services at the Ministry of Local Government, Nicholas Phiri, says Lusaka’s poor performance cuts across key areas such as community projects, bursaries, and empowerment loans. In some components, spending was as low as 6% and 11%.

Mr. Phiri warned that consequences will follow, stressing that Lusaka is dragging down national progress, with the country’s current CDF utilisation standing at 63%—well below the 85% year-end target. In contrast, Copperbelt, Eastern, and Muchinga provinces are leading with over 70% utilisation.

The Ministry has pledged to strengthen oversight and push local authorities to speed up implementation.

CAC DEMANDS DPP GILBERT PHIRI’S RESIGNATION, ACCUSING HIM OF ENABLING CORRUPTION THROUGH LENIENT PROSECUTIONS

CAC DEMANDS DPP GILBERT PHIRI’S RESIGNATION, ACCUSING HIM OF ENABLING CORRUPTION THROUGH LENIENT PROSECUTIONS

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The Community Action Against Corruption (CAC) has called for the resignation of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gilbert Phiri, accusing him of failing to lead a credible fight against high-profile corruption cases.

in a statement, CAC chief executive officer Brightone Tembo criticized the DPP’s office and other law enforcement agencies for allegedly allowing suspects in major corruption cases to walk free after surrendering only a portion of their suspected stolen assets — a practice he described as “fighting corruption using corruption.”

mr. Tembo cited recent media reports involving a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was reportedly allowed to forfeit K23 million out of K60 million believed to be proceeds of crime, thereby avoiding prosecution.
he also referenced the USD 24 million forfeiture from the Konkola Copper Mines liquidator, which was settled without conviction.

he argued that such outcomes betray public trust and expose deep flaws in institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), and the DPP’s office.

mr. Tembo has since urged the government to appoint a more resolute and independent figure to head the DPP’s office.

the remarks come amid growing public concern over the effectiveness of Zambia’s anti-corruption efforts and the need for greater transparency and accountability in prosecuting financial crimes.
